Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports. Welcome in out kicked the
coverage Labor Day edition. I am your fearless leader, Clay Travis.
We're here with the crew, bright and early with you
on a holiday because many of you are working, and
also because many of us are still in shock over
what we saw happened last night. Late. With True Car,
(00:24):
you can find out what other people in your area
paid for the same car you're looking for, and on
average save over three grand off M S r P.
Whether you're looking for a new or used car. VI
is it True Car to enjoy a more confident car
buying experience. Vince Scully back in when Kirk Gibson hit
his home run to win the Dodgers a World Series
game against the Oakland A's said, I don't believe what
(00:49):
I just saw. That's the way I feel about everything
that happened in the Texas A and m U c
L A game that just ended a few hours ago.
On the Way Coast in the Rose Bowl, Josh Rosen
fakes the spike, throws into the back left corner of
the end zone, and completes an improbable, unbelievable, flat out,
(01:11):
extraordinary comeback from a forty four to ten third quarter
deficit to allow u C. L A to escape with
a forty five to forty four when one of the
biggest comebacks in the history of college football given the stakes,
my guy Joel Klapt calling the game. I texted with
him right after the game and I said, man, you
(01:33):
just called an iconic game, the likes of which few
college football fans, few sports fans in general, have ever seen.
And all he could respond was bananas. Uh. Also Matt
Leiner there on the field I was texting with him
during the game as well, the greatest, one of the greatest,
if not the greatest USC quarterback of all time. They're
(01:57):
on the field and the Rose Bowl watching and unbelievable
performance by Josh Rosen. Is there a single person who
watched that game last night and did not leave thinking
to themselves, my goodness, Josh Rosen has to be the
overall number one draft pick in the NFL draft. He
(02:17):
was otherworldly in his performance in the second half. I
don't think you see l A is that good. I
don't think they can run the football. I don't think
they have a great talented team, but they have a
great quarterback. And when I broke this game down for you,
I said, I think A and M is a lot
better at most of the positions, which is why I'm
taking them as the underdog to cover. And oh, by
(02:37):
the way, if you're listening to this right now and
you are an Aggie, probably not much consolation, but at
least you covered. Hate to brag, we had an unbelievable
week of gambling picks, and I'm sure we're gonna get
to those eleven and two against the spread so far,
two more picks tonight. I've got Tennessee and I've got
the over in tonight's game. But we started eleven and
(02:58):
two against the number. And the only real solace you
could take from this game if you were an Aggey
fan is hopefully you took A and M plus three,
four or five points, because at least then you covered.
But my god, this was scintillating. I love college football.
I think it's the single most entertaining sport in all
of America. I really do. I mean, I love football
(03:20):
in general, but I think college football is the single
most entertaining sport in America. Because you don't see things
like this happen. You don't see it happened in the NFL.
You don't see a quarterback get hot, get into that
moment where even the throws he's making that he shouldn't
make are all getting caught, especially that last touchdown pass.
Next to last touchdown pass, Rosen's rolling left. A and
(03:41):
M's all over and he throws back across his body
and miraculously the ball gets caught in the end zone.
Any one play, it's made defensively down the stretch, and
A and M wins, and instead you see LA puts
everything together. Now big picture, big picture, This is massive
because I was tweeting during the game, Hey, look, Chip,
Kelly's out in Westwood shopping for a new home. And
(04:04):
then by the end of the game, I'm genuinely weren't wondering,
how does A and M recover from this? How does Kevin,
someone who was already on the hot seat, recover from
this incident? From this loss as debilitating and destructive and
difficult of a loss as you could possibly imagine, to
give up a thirty four point second half lead from
(04:26):
forty four ten to losing forty five to forty four,
I still can't believe exactly again, as I started the show, saying,
I don't believe to echo Vin Scully for another unbelievable
l a sports moment, what I just saw eight seven seven,
six nine. We're here all three hours with you outkay
(04:47):
the coverage on a Monday. I want your reactions. If
you're up early with us, you can react to a
game that just ended a few hours ago, which is
pretty wild. Who said I That was Jack Buck? That
was Jack Buck in eight eight? Was? He was Vince
Scully in the booth as well. It was a radio call.
The call you're talking about was Jack Buck on the radio. Okay, UM,
(05:11):
I've heard that over and over and over again. Yeah,
you're right on on television. It was Vince Scully and
he said the improbable, the impossible. And Joe Buck was
the one who said, I don't believe what I just saw.
All right, So I got them crossed over. So I
thought Vince Scully was calling that game. In my mind,
I've just gotten it crossed over. The call was from radio.
That's become so iconic. Uh, that is Uh. I was
(05:32):
trying to look it up right before it came on.
I was like, I can't remember exactly who said that?
Um and uh and Vince Scully was attributed UM at
the top of the links when I when I went
and grabbed it, so he's at least getting some credit
for it. UM. So an improbable win by U c
l A. Capping off what is not yet a complete
weekend of college football. Eight seven seven six nine is
(05:55):
our phone number here? Uh what do we do on
Monday's during college football season? If you are new to
the show, what we usually do in the college Football
in NFL universe is I start off with my ideas
of exactly how everything is broken down the biggest stories
to me that exist from the day in college football.
But I want to keep talking about this U c
(06:17):
l A and Texas A and m game off the top,
and so I'll bring in the crew before we get
into the larger picture of obviously there being so much
college football to talk about, starting on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, uh, Sunday,
and still with a Monday night football game. I am
in Atlanta. My thanks down here to the people hosting
me in Atlanta. I will be here for the Tennessee
Georgia Tech game. Will be on live again tomorrow early
(06:39):
morning from Atlanta. Reacting to whatever happens in that game
as well, But it has been a cornucopia of college
football excess, the best possible, uh start to any season
if you are a big fan like I am. Games
on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and now Monday, five straight
days to bathe and marinate in college football, which again
(07:02):
I think is the best sport in America. And it's
also the one with the longest off season. And honestly,
I'm watching both games last night, and I'm not trying
to give the West Virginia and Virginia Tech game lack
of interest or anything. I mean, it was a very
entertaining game and of itself will Career throwing the ball
around like a modern day Charlie Whitehurst. Uh, it was.
It was a great game, and I was flipping back
(07:23):
and forth, and I just kept thinking to myself, Surely
A and M is going to make a play. Surely
at some point in time, even all the way up
to and including on that final drive, because A and
M brought the house a lot on that final drive,
couldn't quite get Josh Rosen down. I kept thinking, surely
they're not going to allow to happen what we are
(07:43):
seeing happen and Josh Rosen does the fake spike and
throws the touchdown pass. I think we have some audio.
Uh is that right, Danny g Let me know what.
Let's go ahead and play that audience. We have Kevin
someone reacting after I haven't even heard this because I
went to bed like a lot of you guys did
after the game was over, So I haven't even heard
these quotes. So let's go ahead and hit that. Let's
(08:04):
play Kevin someone. You don't explain it. I think, uh,
it's you know, like I told you before the season,
we're not making excuses for anything. We Uh, we didn't
get it done with different personnel and different people playing.
We know we've got a young team. We gotta put
them in in position to to to make place. And um,
you know we did in the first half because of
our past rest defensively, um an ability to stop the run.
(08:28):
You know, we threw some balls up. You know, Josh
Rosen threw some balls up. We we should have had
didn't get him down with him. I thought our guys
kept playing down the end. They made more play than
we did in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter. Again,
I don't know how Texas a and M bounces back
from this. They're a young team. I think that the
story is to me less Texas A and M's collapse
(08:50):
and more Josh Rosen just becoming otherworldly. They are not
very many quarterbacks who could have made the throws that
he made. I mean, I said before this game game
that I thought that A and M was gonna be
better at every position on the field just about than
U c l A was except for quarterback. And in
the first half they really bottled up Josh Rosen. For
(09:12):
much of the second half they did, and then it
was a little bit eerily similar to what happened in
the last year's game down in College Station, which ended
up going into double overtime. Josh Rosen got hot after
you thought A and M had put that game away,
and instead it has turned into a mess. And this
situation is gonna get uglier. I mean, I know the
(09:34):
comments that rolled in on my feed. We obviously have
a huge audience all over the state of Texas, many
of those people from UH from Texas, A and M
and the University of Texas, by the way, not a
great day for the University of Texas either or Baylor.
A lot of kicks in the teeth for the college
football fan in Texas. But it has already happened that
a Texas A and M regent has called for Kevin
(09:56):
Sumlin's job in the wakes of in the wake of
this UH and the wake of this outcome, And I'm
reading from to four seven Sports. Texas A and M
has ten members of the Board of Regents, and one
of them, Anthony Busby, has made his feelings known on
the status of head coach Kevin Sumlin. After the Aggies
blew a thirty four point lead UH, Buzby took to
(10:18):
his personal Facebook page Sunday evening to voice his displeasure.
And I'm reading this live to you, guys. I'm sure
I may be criticized for this post, but I honestly
don't care. I've been on the board of Regents for
the A and M system for almost seven years. During
that time, I've not once commented on Kevin Sumlin and
his performance during his tenure at our school. I never
said a word when he had his agent well this
(10:39):
is this is rough. When he and his agent manipulated
a much bigger and longer contract, I said nothing about
his arrogance and his mishandling of multiple player controversies. I
said nothing when he had we had multiple awesome recruiting classes,
only to see key players leave our school or underperform.
But tonight I am very disappointed, and I have to
say this, Kevin Someone was out coach tonight, which isn't new.
(11:03):
His recruits well. I think he meants to say play
well but can't coach. He recruits well, Sorry, he recruits well,
but can't coach the big games or the close games.
Our players were better tonight. Our players were more talented tonight,
but our coaches were dominated on national TV. Yet again.
I'm only one vote on the Board of Regents, But
(11:23):
when the time comes, my vote will be that Kevin
Someone needs to go. In my view, he should go now.
We owe it to our school and our players. We
can do better. Man. That is uh. And then he
went on Twitter and said someone has got to go
hashtag fire someone. This is one of the ten members
(11:47):
of the Board of Regents at Texas A and M
who has come out already in the wake of this defeat.
Just before midnight, I'm guessing Eastern time, it's just about
five hours ago, uh, six hours ago. This guy puts
out these comments, and that's how hot the seat for
(12:08):
Kevin Sumlin has become. That one of the members of
the board that will determine his future has already gone public.
You thought Lane Kiffin getting fired at l a X
was rough before Kevin Sumlin hardly can get home to Texas.
There are people out there calling for his job. Now.
I love Kevin Sumlin. I think he's been great for
(12:29):
Texas A and M. I think he Johnny Menzel and
that new football stadium uh down in uh In College
Station are in many respects, the whole the holy Trinity
of the SEC. Right, they all came together at the
perfect time. Johnny Menzel, the SEC and Kevin Sumlin. But
obviously he is under a lot of heat because of
(12:49):
the way that A and M has finished the last
three seasons. And then you combine it with with what
exactly has gone on in this game A and M.
People feeling like, yes, we've got a young team, but
you're up. They think they've got it in the bag,
and then Josh Rosen just comes to town. Now again,
I think this has more to do with Josh Rosen
(13:10):
and less to do with Texas A and M. And
if you want to focus on somebody on Texas A
and M, you probably should focus on Jon Javis, the
defensive coordinator at A and M who allowed A and
M to come back from a thirty four point deficit
and uh and get Josh Rosen hot. But Rosen we've
seen this before. Man rosen Is is like a golfer
(13:33):
who suddenly is going to make five birdies in six holes.
He just gets hot as a quarterback and everything broke
in his direction. It was uncanny eight seven seven six nine,
unbelievable statement that I just read to you. There again,
that's from Gigham. I'm reading from the seven website that
covers Texas A and M. Uh. That is Danny g
(13:54):
putting that in h in the voice chat here for me,
big news about Kevin Sumlin's future. Our phone lines are
now open. Eight seven seven six three six nine. We're
discussing one of the most unbelievable college football games that
that those of us who are fortunate enough to watch
it late last night have ever seen on Fox. Joel
clad Gus Johnson on the call, and we'll play that
(14:16):
final call for you when we come back at the
top of the next segment. But your phone calls eight
seven seven, three six nine. Happy Labor Day. We're doing
what we do on Labor Day or laboring here on
Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back in now kick the Coverage
Labor Day edition. With True Car, you can find out
what other people in your area paid for the same
(14:37):
car you're looking for and on average save over three
grand off M s r P. Whether you're looking for
a new or used car. Visit True Car to enjoy
a more confident car buying experience. Uh here I thought.
If you are a u c l A fan, it's
gonna be sweet solace. If you are a Texas A
(14:57):
and m Aggie, this is gonna be salting wounds. But
here are the final calls of the final touchdown from
Josh Rosen that gave u c l A THET four
win with less than a minute to play late on
Sunday night in the Rose Bowl. Which once should we
go with? First? Let's go with let's go with you
c l A experiencing pure jubil Achian first, and then
(15:20):
we'll follow it with despair. I'm guessing here the U
c l A call from their radio network and the
party is on at Pasadata from down forty four to ten.
U c l A crips off thirty five on answered
and wins at forty five to forty four. See leg
(15:42):
That is the ball game, man. You see LA celebrates
here after winning the last year the agues at home,
they come on the road. U ce l A gets
to win here at the Rolls Bowl. Forty five is
the final. That is the reactions on both sides. We
don't have the actual reaction of the A call itself
because I just can't even imagine, I mean, how tough
(16:04):
I mean for A and M to finish that on
Sunday night late right, I mean it's at roughly midnight
by the time that game is over. They don't get
out of that building until I mean they're on the
Central time zone, so they don't get out of the
Rose Bowl until what one amish their time. And then
they get on a flight and they land and they
(16:24):
probably have landed what an hour ago, maybe in Texas,
and then they have to turn around and get ready
for the rest of the season. I can't imagine how
awful that flight was l A to college station, and
you go from thinking this is gonna be one of
the most fun plane flights probably that you've ever been on,
where everybody's hype and nobody can sleep and everybody's thrilled
(16:46):
about what can happen for the rest of the season too.
I bet one of the quietest, most difficult playing flights
that we have ever seen. Uh in that process, I mean,
what an unbelievable turnaround. Here is the official touchdown call
from u c l a ros Pros touchdown last over
(17:11):
the shoulder and cut back is cup plate. Uh. Sean
in Austin was at the game. Sean, how in the
world you're still awake? Um, I'm guessing it's whatever three
twenty on the West Coast. Can you not sleep? No?
I just landed in Austin. I just took the Red
Eye back. Worst game of my life. So are you
(17:35):
gonna go to work today? You took the Red Eye back?
Was that? How awful was that flight? Ah? Man? There
was a lot of fat faces on that flight, a
lot of maroon and sap faces. So you get so
take me through your day then? So you you spend
the day all day in the Rose Bowl. It's gorgeous,
weather looks beautiful. A and M's up and you were thinking,
(17:55):
this is the greatest decision that I have made in
my life probably just about right to go out to
l A and watch this game in person. At what
point did you start thinking, oh, my god, we might
actually lose this game. Uh, it wasn't until the middle
of the fourth quarter we started thinking that our main
concern was how the hell we're gonna get out of
the Rose Bowl and get to the airport in time
for our flight. I've been there before. You weren't even
(18:18):
thinking about losing. We just knew it was gonna be
hard to get out. So did you see that, Yeah,
a group of my friends that we go to away
game every single year, So, uh, it's a It's a
big deal to us. Is how we get back together.
That's how we keep our group of guys together and
just a tradition that we have, so it's especially heartbreaking
(18:39):
when we're all together to experience it. So did you
see that A and M, one of the regents has
taken to Facebook already and demanded that Kevin someone be fired?
Is that crazy to you or what's kind of the
the vibe of you and your fan base friends at
this point in the wake of this game. So what
I was gonna call I think Clare, I think you
have it completely back or I don't think Rosen was
(19:01):
that unbelievable. You look at how we should have intercepted
him it he had some great receiver play he did.
He wasn't just picking us apart. As as bad as
it might have looked on paper, if you look at
what we did on offense and how we didn't run
the clock and we didn't use our running backs, our
running backs had forty carries for three and seven team
(19:24):
yards combined between and and then from four minutes ago
in the third we had seven carries from those two
guys just completely disappeared. Play calling was terrible. Look I understand.
I mean when you look at this at two stats,
(19:44):
and I was going back and forth watching that game
completely that there was no doubt that the more physically
dominant team was Texas A and M. And you can
usually tell that by just looking at the running statistics.
UH and and A and M definitely got away from
running well. I honestly think that they were are are
still stunned. I think when they go back and watch
(20:06):
that film to have given up a thirty four point
lead like they did. Uh Sean I appreciate the call.
Good luck by man Uh Shawn. Having just landed back
in Texas. It was a rough opening weekend for college
football fans. He's in Austin, man d J. Durkin and
Maryland went into Austin and put it on Tom Herman
in his first ever game with the Texas Longhorns fifty
(20:29):
one points, a fifty spot that Maryland just put on
Texas and Tom Herman's debut there in Austin, and Baylor loses.
And I can't even remember the freaking school that Baylor
lost to. Jason who did Taylor Los Liberty? Jerry Fallwells
team came into Baylor and one spoiling Matt Rules debut
(20:49):
there Alman I was quite as bad as UH as
the the Howard was at Howard who went on the
road and beat U n l V and one of
the biggest upsets forty five point underdog. I believe it
is uh extraordinary weekend of college football. We've got so
many different games to get to. Uh, let's go, who
should I go to? Jason Martin here, Bob and Tennessee.
He dropped off. We're we're empty right now. But about
(21:11):
Howard and U and l V. By the way, eight
seven seven six nine, you were in the process of
we have tons of voicemails, right, I gave out the
voicemail number in the immediate aftermath of A and M.
And what are you doing with those voicemails? I'm gonna
put this together at some point later on in the program.
We're gonna play a montage of this. There are a
lot of very sad gamblers out there on the A
(21:31):
and M side, in particular, as a gamblers, they should
be happy they covered unless they had A and M
on the money line. Well, there were the last two
that I went through where I had A and M
on the money line. That's how how the voicemail started.
So you can kind of see where that's going. And
then there's a few bleedovers where people taking gratuitous shots
at me after going after A and M. So this
ought to be falling a little bit later. I'm still
(21:52):
working through them. That's how many we got. Eight five,
Fred Clay, we want to have your reactions to games
during football season as well as you know a lot
of times on Friday we play the I H. Clay
Travis calls. It's early in the morning, obviously on a holiday,
but we're not taking a day off with you. Let's
bring in my guy, Ralph Irvin for the update. Or Ralph,
anybody in l A sleep at all after that game?
(22:14):
I don't know how you go to sleep if you
were in uh in a a u c l A fan.
I mean, I genuinely don't know no reason to go
to sleep. After all, it was a near record comeback
for u c l A thirty four points down to
beat Texas A and M forty four. Not the only
big game on Sunday night, though, Number twenty one Virginia
Tech a winner over number twenty two West Virginia. Bad
(22:38):
news for Florida State. Their sophomore quarterback DeAndre Francois will
miss the rest of the season. He's gonna have patel
attendant surgery after a late sack and their loss to Alabama.
With True Car, you can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
new or used if it's a true Car, to enjoy
a more confident car buying experience in Clay, I gotta
(23:01):
tell you this, Kevin sumone quote may sum up the
best one of the weekend. Kept playing down the end.
They made more play than we did in the second
half and particularly in the fourth quarter, I guess, so
no doubt at all. Appreciate that, Ralph. With True Car,
you can find out what other people know your area
paid for the same car you're looking for on an
average save for three grand off M S r P.
(23:22):
Whether you're looking for a newer use car, visit True
Car to enjoy a more confident car buying experience. So
we're talking, obviously a ton about this A and M
collapsed down the stretch against U C L A and
what should happen? One of the A and M regents
already out there calling for Kevin Sumlin's job. Remember in
the off season there was lots to talk about Kevin
Sumlin's job security as well. And I'm kind of blown
(23:43):
away in general by the way that this is all
shaken out, because I was anticipating coming in watching this
game and saying, boy, Kevin Sumlin is off the hot seat.
And you know who's squarely on the hot seat now,
Jim Mora. And in the space of really a quarter
and a half, everything changed. Kevin. Someone couldn't have lost
this game, probably in a worst way Meanwhile, Jim Mora
(24:06):
comes surging back. But we had a bunch of different
takeaways from the weekend that was in college football. I'm
down here in Atlanta. I went to the Bama FSU
game and DeAndre Francois. It's awful for FSU is out
of the mix. He's out of the out for the
season with his injury, and I think that probably is
going to knock f s U out of the playoff
(24:26):
miss mix. So in the process of losing that game
to Alabama, and Alabama did what Alabama usually does, notwithstanding
the way the game against Clemson ended. As the game progresses,
their offenses, I mean, their defense is like an anaconda
and it slowly suffocates you. And at one point in
time during that Bama FSU game, Bama blocked up punt,
(24:48):
they recovered a fumble on a on a kickoff after
they kicked a field goal, and then they picked off
Francois two consecutive plays and f s U was trying
to wave the white flag. It sucks that Francois I
got hurt like he did at the end of that
game because there was nothing left for him to be
in the game. Four I understand, you're trying to get
it more reps. You're trying to continue, considering you don't
(25:09):
have any preseason at all, get your team better. So
it's an unfortunate incident. But Alabama, I think is the
unquestioned best team in college football. Uh, Florida State now
out of the mix for the playoffs, and to me,
the other like, notwithstanding what we saw happen last night,
the other big news from Saturday was we talked a
lot about this Jim Harbaugh versus Jim mcowaen dynamic Michigan
(25:33):
versus Florida, and I thought it was unbelievable. I thought
that that was as bad of a beating as I
have seen put on the Florida Gators in twenty or
twenty five years. I've watched all the big games the
Gators have played over the years. And Michigan, if you
take away the two pick six is that they threw
which odds are you're not gonna return an interception for
(25:54):
a touchdown? Right? Those are two pretty uh pretty fortunate
outcomes for Florida. You take away those two plays and
this could have been like a thirty five to three
or forty two to three tight beat down. I think
there are lots of questions in Gainesville about Jim mclwaine's
future as well, because this offense is still awful, and
(26:15):
the offense has effectively been awful all the way back
to when Urban Meyer was at the end of his
tenure with Florida. Essentially since Tim Tebow left. They cannot
find a quarterback at Florida and I still don't know
if they have one. And by the way, a guy
they wished they had, Will Greer. Will Greer looked pretty
dagging good last night at West Virginia, didn't He looked phenomenal.
(26:37):
Uh in that loss to Virginia Tech. You think he
might have made a little bit of a difference with
the Gators. He did before he got suspended for pet
abuse or using the g n C supplements that he
shouldn't have been using according to him, before that happened. Uh,
he was. He's the only bright spot the Gator offense
has having a long time. A couple of games there
he was extraordinary, including a big win over Old miss
(26:58):
before he got kicked to the curb. But I think
they're legitimate questions now to ask about Jim mcawaine's future.
At Florida, and not just because he's out there getting
his picture taken potentially humping sharks. Uh. What do we
think about the a c C. Big win for Virginia Tech.
We still have a game going on tonight between Tennessee
and Georgia Tech. That is another little bit of an
(27:18):
arbiter about that situation. I think the a c C
was overhyped. I do. I think they have very good coaches.
I've said this for a long time. Right now, the
a c C has the best coaches in college football.
Nick Saban is the best coach in college football. Urban
Meyers the second best coach. The third and fourth best
coaches in college football, I believe are Dabbo Sweeney at
(27:38):
three and Jimbo Fisher at four. But you look at
all these coaches out there, Dabbo Sweeney, Jimbo Fisher, Bobby Petrino,
Mark Rick, David cut Cliff, Justin Fouente, maybe Paul Johnson.
UM I think you before they lost Larry Fedora at
u NC has been decent, but Florida State no match
for Alabama. In Week one, Louisville had to come from
behind to win on the road at Perdue n C
(28:01):
State lost to South Carolina. Really big win for Wilmus
Champs team. North Carolina lost at home to cal Pitt
had to go to overtime against Youngstown State. If Virginia
Tech had lost to West Virginia, then we'd all be
pointing to this game between Tennessee and Georgia Tech and saying, man,
the a c C doesn't necessarily have as much gas
(28:21):
as we may be anticipated. The SEC has the best players.
I think the a c C. The SEC has the
best players, a CEC has the best coaches. Texas, Uh,
these are the things that I took away from the
weekend Texas. Everybody says every year Texas is back baby.
And then like we said, Maryland went into Austin and
hung fifty one points on him. I mentioned it will
(28:43):
must Champ. Huge win for South Carolina over n C State. Uh,
USC looked bad, but they survived. And guys, in a
modern college football playoff environment, all that matters. All that
matters is that you win. It's like the n C
Double A tournament. Survive in advance, if you go to
(29:04):
the final four, nobody remembers if you had a bad
first round game of the n C Double A tournament.
So long as you win, we'll see what happens with USC.
Now they get Stanford massive game because Stanford is just
out physical to USC in the past several years, and
they get Texas back to back. If USC wins both
those games and Sam Donald plays well, nobody will remember
(29:26):
what happened against Western Michigan. L s U. I think
a team that is under the radar. L s U
put it on b y U. You want to know
about physical domination. L s U held b y U
to ninety seven yards of total offense in route to
rolling up four hundred and seventy nine yards of offense
on their own. Stats are even worse for b y U.
(29:47):
On the ground. L s U ran the ball fifty
seven times for two hundred and ninety six yards. B
y U ran at fourteen times for minus five yards.
And we've got a tongue to the discuss eight seven, seven,
three six nine. Let me Brie in the crew, Jason Martin,
in addition to everything I just ran through there, did
anything else stand out to you or anything else that
(30:09):
you want to echo? I mean, you just named about
a hundred things, so I think that you kind of
you kind of blanketed it and covered it all. I
thought that the story was the State of Texas and
you mentioned already obviously Tom Herman. And what was amazing
about that game is Maryland has an injury in the
second half and the next play after a very lengthy
break where they end up having to cart the guy off,
(30:30):
and it's a real somber scene. You've got Maryland players
crying on the sidelines. The very next play, you saw
Texas score a touchdown and it felt like that the
momentum had shifted, the crowd was getting back into it,
and it was on Texas a side, and then Maryland
just refused to let them win that game, and it
came across so impressive and obviously not the way you
(30:50):
want to start a Texas but just looking at the
State of Texas as a whole, you saw Texas go down,
You saw that ridiculous Baylor situation where they lose to Liberty,
and then Texas A and M last night giving up
that historic lead and letting Josh Rosen do the fake
spike and score at the end of that game. That's
three Texas schools. No positive stories coming out of the
(31:10):
State of Texas at all. Remember I told you on
Friday that I was curious about Louisville and Perdue because
Jeff Brohm is an elite offensive mind and he's a
guy that really understands Bobby Petrino. Well. Lamar Jackson had
pretty good numbers, but Louisville didn't exactly impress the world
the way that they played. I don't want to overreact
to too much that I saw yet, I don't know
(31:33):
that the A c C is overhyped. We'll see. They
certainly did not live up to the I think f
s U is probably done in the playoffs, and that's
unfortunate because DeAndre Francois is out. Now they lost a game,
they basically have to grunt the table now, right, because
we've not had so far. Not say it couldn't happen,
but so far we have not had a two lost
(31:55):
team into the playoffs, right, And so to me, when
you look at this situation, you be if you're an
f SU person, you look at the rest of the
schedule and say, Okay, we basically have to go twelve
and oh from here on out without a quarterback who
has proven with having to go on the road at
Clemson and even though I know they looked awful, but
at Florida in a major state rivalry game. Just leaving
(32:17):
those two games on the table, not even considering Miami
and the additional challenges that are on that schedule, I
think fs US out of the mix. We'll see this weekend.
This is a big game coming up this weekend, even
though we haven't quite finished the opening weekend of college
football with Auburn going on the road against Clemson. Because
if Auburn went on the road and beat Clemson, first
(32:37):
of all, it would be a hello Jarrett stid a moment.
Secondly would be massive for Gus mills On. But then
I think you'd be looking around at the A C C.
Same boy. The teams that were at the top of
this echelon the state of Alabama just took care of them.
So we'll see what happens in that one. I think
Clemson is a prohibitive favorite. Now are they too young
to be good enough to make the playoff? I think
that's the big question. Eight seven, seven, nine, ninths six nine.
(33:01):
Opening up the phone line jury actions to the week
that was in college football. Anything that you want to
talk about our two I'll let you know we got
Andy Staple schedule to join us from s I. Our three.
We are scheduled to be joined by CBS Sports is
Gary Danielson. We are breaking down the week that was
and still is potentially with Tennessee Georgia Tech going on Monday,
all of us still a little bit in shock over
(33:22):
the comeback from U C l A and Josh Rosen.
This is out kicked the coverage on Fox Sports Radio.
Welcome in, I'll kick the coverage wherever you are across
the country. I hope you are having a fantastic morning.
With True Car. You can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking
for and on average save over three grand off M
(33:43):
s r P. Whether you're looking for a new or
use car, visit True Car to enjoy a more confident
car buying experience. Putting a bow on a weekend that's
not quite over because we've got five straight Gays days
of college football Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and
Texas A and M collapses losing a thirty four point lead,
and the big discussion out there now is what's next?
(34:08):
What is going to happen with Texas A and M.
In the wake of Josh Rosen penning an incredible comeback. Immediately,
one of the ten Texas A and M regions took
to Facebook. Guy's name is uh, let's see Anthony Busby,
and he effectively says that it's time for Kevin Sumlin
to go. In my view, I'm quoting from his Facebook post.
(34:31):
In my view, he should go now. We owe it
to our school and our players. We can do better.
He also tweeted someone has to go hashtag fire someone
just before midnight last night. That's Tony Busby, who is
a one of the ten people on the board of
(34:51):
regents for Texas A and M. Now what does that mean?
What would happen? First of all, it's the first game
of the season, and as crushing as it is that
A and M may have lost this one, it's still
pretty wild to demand that your coach be fired after
game one of the season. What would have to happen
in order for that to happen? To use the low word,
happen there a bunch of times, and then would have
(35:12):
to pay Kevin Sumlin eleven point to five million dollars
within sixty days A lot of times you see these
different uh contract situations where a guy is owed to
pay out over years. Right, the new trend if you
have a good agent and you're highly sought after, is
not only are you gonna have to pay me a
(35:34):
lot if you fire me, but you're gonna have to
pay me all that money basically up front. So that
gives the coaches a lot more job security because by
and large, there aren't that many programs that can cut
a check like that. So A and M, which is
loaded with oil money, just built a brand new stadium
at Kyle Field that is phenomenal to see, would have
(35:56):
to cut a check for eleven point to five million
dollar ors to Kevin Sumlin and that would be owed
within sixty days if they decided to fire him. Now,
the Texas A and M schedule, they've got a little
bit of a breather now, right. You open them with
a really tough cross country game, traveling all the way
out to California. You had an opportunity if you won
(36:17):
that game to think, you know what, hey, maybe we
can get on a little bit of a role, which
is what typically has happened. A and M plays again
on Saturday. They're probably just having landed in College Station
not that long ago, right an all night flight I
would imagine to get them back to College Station. And
right now they'll play Nickel State and Louisiana Lafayette, both
(36:39):
home in kyle Field. They should win both those, and
then they play Arkansas, and I believe Jerry World in
that neutral site game between Texas A and M and Arkansas,
which has been a real battle over the last several years.
Then they get South Carolina. So look, I mean you
could have if A and M and won this game,
they probably would have started like they do every year.
It really hot, right, But even with this loss, if
(37:02):
you are a glass is half full kind of guy,
A and M I think as it should beat nicol
State in Louisiana Lafayette Arkansas is effectively a coin flip.
They should beat South Carolina in Kyle Field. So A
and M should win their next four and be four
and one with Alabama coming to town. Now. Obviously the
(37:22):
expectations and thoughts would be totally different had A and
M won this game, But I think the immediate reaction
of we have to fire Kevin Sumlin is a little
bit crazy. At this point in time, there's nothing to
rush into. You have a young football team, look and
see what happens against nicol State, Louisiana, Lafayette, Arkansas, and
(37:43):
South Carolina. What are you gonna do? You're gonna give
an interim tag to somebody you're gonna give I mean,
obviously John Javis probably not going to be the interim coach.
And by the way, he just gave up forty five points,
including a forty four point uh in an unbelievable thirty
four point comeback after they were up thirty forty four
to ten. So do you really want to do that?
(38:04):
Do you want Mazzoni to take over? I just I
don't see that as being a very viable option. So
look at it. Take a breath. If you're A and M,
you've got Nickels State, Louisiana, Lafayette, Arkansas, and South Carolina,
you have a good chance to be four and one.
With Alabama coming to town. You'll lose that one. Florida
at Florida is a very winnable game. The Gators looked awful.
(38:26):
Then you get Mississippi State Auburn in New Mexico, all
at home. Old miss is not very good at l
s U I'm not trying to keep A and M
people off the ledge here. This is a football team.
You still win nine games, right, I mean, let's say
you're gonna lose to Alabama. Let's say you're gonna lose
to at L s U. Okay, every other game on
this schedule is a very winnable game for A and M.
(38:51):
Now doesn't mean they're gonna win them all. Obviously, there
are a lot of land mines in here. Auburn would
be a really good win because it looks like Auburn
is gonna be pretty good, But that game is at
Kyle Field, and L s U looks really good against
b y U, and L s U has had A
and M's number already, so I feel like that's probably
not a very good chance. Alabama. I don't even think
you should count. Nobody is gonna beat Alabama in the
(39:14):
regular season. I think the Tide's gonna go twelve and
oh and then win the SEC title and be thirteen
and O. I think Jalen Hurts is gonna be better
at quarterbacks. So I don't even think when you're looking
at your schedule and you're in the SEC and you're
playing Alabama, I think you go ahead and just scrawl
in loss there. You're not gonna beat Alabama. I mean,
I I just I just don't see any way that's
gonna happen. So I don't think you judge A and
(39:34):
M right now in Alabama. So you lose that game,
Let's say you lose at l s U. This is
still a team that can go nine and three. Even
in the wake of this awful defeat. They're gonna beat
Nicols State, They're gonna beat Lafayette. They'll be two and one,
and that Arkansas game has turned into a big rivalry game.
It's a young football team. They will be back and
ready to go on September at should be two and
(39:56):
one when that one you got Arkansas, I mean got
South Carol Liney, you win that when you're four and one.
I think that can happen. Am I crazy? We'll see
eight seven seven six, nine, will bring back in the crew,
reset everything for you. At the top of our to
hope your labor day is going spectacularly well. Thank you
for spending it with us wherever you are, all fifty states,
all over the country. Serious XM Channel eighty three. My
(40:18):
top ten in college football up next We're also going
to talk to Andy Staples from s I and Gary
Danielsson from CBS Sports and Our three. This is out
kicked the coverage Monday edition. College Football's back, Baby Rejoice, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome.
College football season as A facially kicked off, we have
not quite finished it yet because we had a Thursday,
(40:40):
of Friday, a Saturday, a Sunday, and tonight Monday night
game between Tennessee and Georgia Tech. I am in Atlanta
as the sun is coming up over the city. A
lot of you still reacting to what was pure madness
on the West coast, Texas A and M up four
four to ten in the third quarter when Josh Rosen
(41:04):
started to deal and before things were all said and done,
A and M had given up that forty four to
ten lead and had lost forty five to forty four.
In the immediate aftermath, Texas A and M regent demands
that Kevin someone be fired. I just ran through the
schedule and said, hold on a minute, who are you
(41:24):
going to get and are you really telling me that
A and M still can't win nine games this year? Now,
maybe they won't, Maybe they'll go eight and four. Or
seven and five, in which case you'll have an easy
decision to make. You'll have to pay Kevin someone at
eleven point to five million dollars owed to him within
sixty days. And maybe that's the play. Maybe that's what
(41:45):
makes sense. And this immediate aftermath frustrating loss, one of
many frustrating loss for the state of Texas. You had
that Longhorns give up fifty one in the home debut
of Tom Herman. You had Matt ruled down in Baylor
while his team to somehow get beat by Liberty. Three
predecent sized programs in Texas, all three taking it right
(42:07):
on the chin. And uh, we have allowed our phone
lines to be used. We have this seven sixty five
day a year voicemail line where you guys can call in.
And Jason Martin has been listening to those voicemails, and
we're gonna play you those clips here at some point
in this hour or the next hour, some point in
(42:28):
the show. Jason Martin early preview, what can we expect
some sad people, a lot of expletives, which means a
lot of bleeps on the end of the radio. Obviously,
we gave out the number mainly at least for this side,
which is this is gonna expand and become a lot
more fun now that everybody knows to do it all
weekend long. But most of the voicemails came in right
(42:50):
after the A and M game, So it's gonna be
heavy on the A and M U C l A stuff,
But a lot of sad gamblers who lost money, who
made mistakes, and it's gonna be a lot of fun.
It's about four minutes long, and it's gonna be it's
gonna be a really good way to get your labor
day started. For sure. You're gonna laugh. Well, hopefully we'll
entertain you again. That phone number eight five five hundred Clay, right,
(43:11):
Jason Martin, eight five five fire Clay. You can react
to any game. If you're watching Georgia Tech, Tennessee tonight
when the NFL kicks off on Thursday night. This phone
line is reachable all minutes, every minute of every day,
at any point in time. Basically, think of the show
as perpetually existing. You can call in and say anything. Obviously,
you can take shots at me. You can take shots
anybody on the show. I don't know how you take
(43:33):
shots at me Jason Martin because I went eleven and
two in gambling. You you know, I hate to brag,
even you're a little bit impressed that I went eleven
in two against the number gambling so far. Yeah, I
really am. Like, I don't gamble, but I might actually
start looking at your picks and pick a couple of
them each week or something. I wouldn't mind making a
little bit of extra money. So I gave all these
picks out um and I do typically on what do
(43:55):
we say, We're gonna do them on Thursday because we're
so packed, We're gonna start doing them on third day.
But I we have OutKick v I P. And we
had an OutKick v I P V I'm down in Atlanta.
So I got in my car on Friday after I
did the mail bag and wrote it out kick and
I drove down to Atlanta. I went straight to a
sports bar here in town. I parked my car. I
(44:15):
had an event for OutKick V I P. You can
pay ninety nine dollars, you get a T shirt, you
get all my gambling picks, you get access to our
events all over the city, all over the country. So
we had our first OutKick V I P. Event. We
had a good group of people show up. Uh here
it's Stats sports Bar in Atlanta. So I got down
here on Friday. Park my car. Uh, go into the
(44:37):
go into the sports bar. Parking a lot like normal lot,
but I'm in such I'm the traffic is awful because
the vestiges of the of the storm that slammed into
Texas are coming through Nashville. It's impossible to get get here.
Took me six and a half hours to get to Atlanta.
I'm late, an hour and a half late from my
own event, and so I I drive. It's not gonna
(44:58):
surprise anybody who who knows me at all, but like,
if I can wear shorts and flip flops, I wear
shorts and flip flop. So I'm driving in a T
shirt and shorts. Get their park, Pay to park, there's
a parking lot attendant, their security, pay to park. Get
changed in the parking lot, right like, get out of
my shorts and my T shirt, go in, talk for
an hour and a half, hang out with an awesome
group of people. We had a really good time. Uh there,
(45:21):
come back outside and somebody has broken out the window
of my car, stolen all my clothes stolen. My laptop
bag with an iPad, a laptop, and a hand another
iPhone in it that I do my periscope and Facebook
shows with. So literally the only thing I have with
me in in in Atlanta my flip flops and my
pair of shorts. So I had to go out to Uh,
(45:42):
I had to go out to Walmart by a laptop, underwear, socks, um,
tooth braced like toothbrush, everything, and I've been kind of
flying blind. I went to the mall down here and
got my iPad, so I think I'm gonna be able
to do a back to doing my my periscope and
Facebook shows. But but yeah, so pretty wild weekend. However,
(46:05):
it's all been balanced out because I went eleven and
two in Gambly, and uh, that's as good of an
opening weekend as I've ever had. I've got Tennessee tonight,
and I have got the over if you want to
gamble on Monday night. Football college edition, brand new football stadium.
By the way, This Mercedes Ben's Arena, football stadium, whatever
you wanna call Mercedes Been Stadium where the Falcons are
(46:27):
gonna play, and they're having both of these major college
football games. I was there for Bama f s U,
and I'll be there tonight for Tennessee Georgia Tech. It's
Jerry World ESK. It's a phenomenal edifice, just an awesome structure.
I didn't think that Georgia Dome was very bad. It's
still standing, but this place is even better, and it
is it's extraordinary. I mean, it's Jerry World ESK. That's
(46:50):
the best possible recommendation I can give for how awesome
this new Atlanta football stadium is. You know, this city
is dominating when they basically said the Orgia Dome is
not good enough for us anymore. We need an entirely
new venue, and that Georgia Dome venue is still pretty nice.
I mean, most cities in America would have stuck with
the Georgia Dome for another ten or fifteen years. Atlanta
(47:13):
builds a brand new football stadium which is beautiful, I mean,
just a temple for gridiron goodness. And it was a
great setting for the Bama FSU game on Saturday night,
and I imagine tonight it'll be a great setting for
Tennessee Georgia Tech. Butch Jones, you want to see the
reaction to Kevin Sumlin and how how strained it is
(47:36):
and how uncomfortable people are. As soon as that outcome
happens and A and M gives up that thirty four
point lead, if Tennessee loses to Georgia Tech, it will
be just as ugly for Butch Jones as it is
right now for Kevin Sumlin. Both of those guys are
at the top of the hot list. And in the
same way that there are many people who are demanding
(47:57):
that Kevin Sumlin be fired, including A Texas A and
M or Regent. That would be uh that will be
also the case with but shown tonight if he wins. Now,
the flip side was gonna be when you're on the
hot seat if you get a big win. It looked
like Kevin Sumlin was going to extinguish that hot seat.
And again, if you look at their schedule, A and
M would have had a pretty good chance still has
a decent chance of being four and one would have
(48:18):
had a pretty good chance to start five and oh
with Bama come into town. Now, there are a lot
of difficult land mines there. Right, you're gonna win the
next two, but then you've got Arkansas, which has been
a toss up game. And by the way, there ain't
a lot of people in Arkansas who are very happy
with their coach either. In fact, right now in the SEC,
how many programs are happy with their football coaches. Obviously
(48:40):
Alabama Auburn fans or if he still on gust malls On.
We'll see how good Jared Sidham is. Show me what happens.
They're saying on this road game against Clemson proved to
us that we're actually a decent football team. Okay, Uh,
you've got maybe Mississippi State fans I think are happy
with Dan Mullen. Maybe maybe Kentucky football fans to the
extent that they're ever happy because I don't blame him.
(49:02):
Maybe they like Mark Stoops. I think Vanderbilt is pretty
happy with Derek Mason. We'll see about Georgia with Kirby Smart.
There's lots of optimism. We'll see what happens there. They
go to Notre Dame this weekend, big game. How healthy
is Jacob Eeson is gonna be a substantial question. That's
a really big game for for the Georgia football program. Uh.
South Carolina is happy with wil must Champ. Huge win
(49:23):
for them, over n See State. Florida fans are definitely
not happy with mc Owaine. Texas fans are up in Texas.
A and M fans are up in arms over Kevin Sumlin.
Arkansas ain happy with Belma. We'll see about Barry ottam
at Missouri. By the way, Drew lock through for like
four thousand yards in their game against Missouri State. Early
test between Missouri and South Carolina coming up this weekend.
(49:43):
I mean, there's a lot of trepidation and uncertainty and
unhappiness in the SEC in general. This is what Nick
Saban has done. They have He has managed to kill
the other coaches in the conference and make everybody miserable.
We'll ask Andy Staples about that. He's gonna join SI
dot com writer. He was sitting next to me during
this Bama F s U game? Am I correct? Does
(50:04):
he believe that I'm I'm right when I say that
F s U season effectively over in terms of contending
for a playoff berth or probably an a CC title
with the DeAndre Francois injury. Uh, what do we think
about Bama? How good can they be? Is Jalen Hurts
improved at quarterback? What? What are reasonable expectations for them.
What does he expect to see tonight in Tennessee, Georgia
(50:25):
Tech in the Monday night football game, And what in
the world's gonna happen with Kevin Sumlin. Let's go around
the horn and pull the crew right now. I would
not fire Kevin Sumlin right now. I think it's crazy
to fire a coach after one game, even if you're
unhappy for past years. Again, A and M Regent calling
for firing Kevin Sumlin Lane Kiffin style, basically on the
(50:45):
L A X tarmac is what he wanted to do.
I think that's crazy. You look at A and M
schedule right now. They can win the next four. They
could theoretically still win nine games this year even if
they lose to Obama, and even if they lose to
L s U, every other game is winnable. And by
the way, by the end of the year, L s
you may well be winnable as well. It's just that
A and M hasn't had a lot of success against
(51:05):
LSU so far, so I'm not sure that that's going
to change this year. But so I'm taking L s
U off the table, and I'm taking Bama off the
table other than those two. I think there's a really
good chance that A and M could compete and or
win the other nine games on their schedule. You got
a nine and three. Kevin Someone's back. You don't have
to cut him in eleven point to five million check.
(51:26):
It's a million dollar check. It's a young team. Would
you fire Kevin Sumlin Jason Martin? Not right now? No,
because I don't see the benefit of it. Like, I
don't know what you're gonna get out of that. There's
no real you have to have an interim. It makes
no sense, right, that's a really it's a really dumb idea.
I think, yeah, I agree. I agree with you. I
think at the end of the year, if they're not
(51:46):
nine in three, okay, now we can have the discussion.
I just think it's ridiculous to base anything off of
one performance. I mean, things can happen this game. Obviously,
this was a freak show in the end, but it's
also a historic show. It's like the Falcons didn't fire
their coach because of what happened in the Super Bowl.
It was a very very bad night for Kevin Someone
(52:07):
at a bad time for Kevin Someone because he doesn't
necessarily have the trust of everybody at Texas A and M.
But there's again, I just don't see the benefit of
doing it now. In a year, we can talk about it,
but not yet. Yeah, I mean I think in when
you get into November, if you know it's going to happen,
I don't have a problem with that, right if you
if you sit around and you say, man, we're six
and uh, you know we're we're I know, five and
(52:29):
five and we got two games left, Like we know
that no matter what happens in these final two games,
we're not going to bring back our coach. I don't
think there's a problem with that. But to me, it's
insanity to do it after one week. I mean, who knows,
who knows what's gonna happen in the SEC. Injuries can
happen again if I when I look at these teams,
the only two teams that I say, man, I really
don't think A and M is going to have a
(52:50):
very good chance of winning these games against Bama. And
again I would take Bama off the board, like, I
don't think anybody has a very good chance of beating Bama.
So I'm not even sure that you judge your team
based on Alabama, and I think at L s U,
I think L s U is gonna be pretty good.
They dominated B y U in a game that ended
very late Saturday night. A lot of people didn't notice it.
And by the way, we haven't even hardly talked about them.
We'll talk about this this game that these guys with
(53:12):
UH as well. I mean that Michigan Florida game is
just getting snowed under by what happened in the UH
in the Texas A and m game. To me, the
Texas A and m U c L A game has
overshadowed what may have been the most dominant result of
the entire opening weekend, which was Michigan and Jim Harbaugh
beat Florida worse than I've seen Florida beaten maybe in
(53:33):
twenty years, maybe a generation of football. Since Florida got
beat as bad as they did by Michigan, and that
could have very easily been a forty two to three game.
People just don't beat Florida like that. I actually think
if I am a fan right now of Florida and
of Texas A and M I'm a lot more unhappy
as a Florida fan than I am Texas A and M.
(53:55):
A and M was a four or five point underdog
on the road against U C. L. A. If you
had told A and M fans you're gonna lose this
game by one point on a touchdown pass with twenty
five seconds left, or whatever the heck it was, most
of them would have said, Man, that sucks, but we
would have really played a great game. The way that
A and M lost, giving up the thirty four point
(54:15):
lead is worse than if they had just played a
back and fourth game and ended up losing four. If
A and M had scored with two minutes left in
this game to take the lead, and then the exact
same situation had happened, where Josh Rosen comes back down
and they score, A and M fans wouldn't be up
in arms. So I think again, you have to look
at the overall landscape right now. If I am a
(54:36):
college football fan waking up this morning, I am not
sure that I am that there's anybody who deserves more,
deserves to be more angry than Florida Gator fans. You
suspend ten guys, Your offense is indeped. Third straight year
of an inept offense, other than a couple of games
between Will Greer and the Florida Gators when they kind
(54:56):
of had everything come together with him, They've been awful,
really really awful on the offensive side of the ball.
And this is where Jim mcwain is supposed to be
your savior. You hired him to replace Will must Champs
so that he could be great on the offensive side
of the ball. You get drubbed by Michigan and your
former coach, Will must Champ goes out in year two
(55:17):
and beats in See State. That's that's the team of
all the teams right now in college football. To me,
the fan base that has the most right to be
up in arms and angry over and I mean like
top twenty five fan base. Obviously, if you're U and
l V and you lose to Howard, you're like, hey,
what happened? And if you're Baylor and you lose the Liberty, Yeah,
but those are early in and even Texas and you
(55:38):
lose to Maryland, those are early in the season losses
under really young coaches. So I'm not that concerned about
those losses. To me, this was a statement game, and
I said it on this show. I said the statement
game between Florida and Michigan, and Michigan brought a two
by four and laid the lumber to the Gators, and
the Gators had no response for it at all. It
(56:01):
was an ugly situation. Well, you're gonna be joined by
Andy Staples up next. I'll ask him what he thinks
about all of these games that we are discussing in
more from Sports Illustrated. Final hour of the show will
have Gary Danielson and Gary Danielson from CBS Sports, and
we will have your reactions to the voicemail that we
are going to play that you guys called in the
(56:22):
immediate aftermath of the Texas A and M loss. Those
are really good four minutes long. You're saying we should
do it. Final segment of the show. You think, Jason Martin, Yep,
that's what I think. Okay, that's the plan. That's what
we're gonna do. Andy Staples up next, discussing the weekend
that was in college football. He's sat next to me
during Bama F s U. Does he agree with me
that F s US chances in the A c C
(56:43):
and certainly of the national championship picture of the playoffs
are out of the line. Now, he's a former Florida
Gator football player. What does he think about the situation
at Florida and what should happen with Texas A and
M in UH and Kevin Sumlin in the wake of
that collapse against u C l A. We'll discuss all
that more. I'm Clay Travis. You're listening to I'll Kick
the Coverage on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back in now
(57:06):
Kick the Coverage Labor Day edition. Son coming up over
the city of Atlanta soon, if not already, the sun
coming up over the state of Texas, even though a
lot of you may now want it to because it
seems like a bad dream. If you're an Aggy fan,
You're up next. Thing you know, Josh Rosen throwing a
(57:27):
touchdown pass inside of a minute to play, and the
hot seat talk immediately takes goes to another level when
one of the ten members of the Texas A and
M Board of Regents takes to UH, Facebook and Twitter
demanding that Kevin Sumlin be fired. When you're joined now
by my guy Andy Staples from s I at Andy Underscore,
(57:48):
Staples re remember with true car you can find out
what other people in your area paid for the same
car you're looking for and on average save over three
grand off M S r P. Whether you're looking for
a newer used car, visit True Car to enjoy a
more con car buying experience. Andy, can you believe what
you saw last night? No? No, I mean I had
flipped to West Virginia and Virginia Tech for a lot,
(58:11):
you know, a lot of it because like most people,
I would imagine, yeah it was and then you you
you kind of realize, Okay, you see all he's doing
something here, and wis like there's no way you can't
come back from that. But you flip over and you're like,
it seems they can finally block for Rosen. Oh, it
(58:31):
seems they can rush the passer now. I mean, so
stuff that they just simply couldn't do in the first half,
they they started doing. And I don't some of it
was Nicked Darkle getting hurt and Kellen Mon having to
come in. But you know, in terms of you see
all the offense versus Adam defense, it's like they said
(58:52):
a switch flipped suddenly they learned how to block. Okay,
So I immediately said, like, I'm sure you've seen the
news right now, that one of the regions has called
for Kevin Smlin to be fired on both Twitter and Facebook.
They're only ten regions, so this is a pretty big deal.
I said, that's pure insanity. Look, you look at A
and M schedule. If you had told A and M fans, hey,
you're gonna lose by one point on the last second
(59:14):
Josh Rosen touchdown coming into this game, I think most
of them would have said, Okay, we're gonna quit ourselves
pretty well. Obviously, giving up the lead that they had
is not ideal in any stretch of imagination, but they
were favored to lose this football game against a really
good quarterback in Josh Rosen. That's exactly what happened. They
could still, in theory, win nine games because I don't
(59:35):
thinknybody's gonna beat Bama. And we'll talk about Bama and
F s U and what you thought of that game.
And I certainly don't think that it's likely, given what
A and M has been able to do against L
s U, that they're going to go on the road
and win at L s U. But the other nine
games are certainly winnable. How yeah, I don't think they will,
(59:56):
but I think they're I suppose I mean several of
those games. I mean, look, they could beat Arkansas, they
can beat South Carolina, they beat Mississippi State Old Miss.
I mean, they would have to upset Auburn probably, But
the other games, I mean, I think are all winnable.
Game mean, they're they're not substantially worse than anybody else. Now,
to me, it's gonna resolve itself, right, Either you win
(01:00:17):
out nine of these eleven games and you end up
nine and three and Kevin someone's gonna come back, or
he's gonna be eight and four or seven and five,
and that's probably not gonna be good enough. And A
and M is gonna cut him in check, all right,
So I think five and three in the secason magic number.
You can be eight and four and five and three
now that you've lost in nine com good point. But
(01:00:38):
I think getting off the four and four plateau is
is what they really want. But because the guy last night,
the reason I read Buddie Rose thinking okay, what if
they go on a big win street is you can
feel this way, right, we're very emotional people, and you
know that's that's a pure gut visceral reaction to to
(01:01:00):
what you just saw. But they've had that a lot
and and look, someone has lost a lot of allies
over the years in power and and still survived. But
I just I think at this point they do not
want to be average in the SEC. So they've got
(01:01:23):
to get over the SEC. If they can do that,
he's okay. If they can't do that, they're going to
make a change. And I just I don't know. I
don't I don't see the five wins because you know,
I'm not sure how good U c l A is.
That sends the problem with all these week one thing,
you know, we we we see like Texas noted name
(01:01:45):
last year, we assumed the Notre Dame was good and
then inferred that because Texas speak of the Texas was
also good, but that they were both bad. So the
stuff that U c l A did in the first
half sod to me. The U c l A is
not very good either. Now they have a very good quarterback,
but what happens when they play some of the better
(01:02:08):
teams in the pack twelve that aren't going to blow
the lead like that? So I don't know that losing
by one to U c l A suggests that the
Texas A and m's capable of beings teams on their schedule. Uh.
Actually I watched that and I go, you know what,
now I'm worried about Texas A and moving South Carolina. Well,
(01:02:30):
I mean and certainly will much Champ had a big win.
Let's let's pivot to the game that you and I
were sitting watching in person, the the the the Florida
State against Alabama game. What did you see? Did anything
surprise you? And in the wake of the DeAndre France
squad news is basically f s U out of the
running in your opinion for the a c C and
(01:02:52):
certainly for the playoff. If they're out of the running
for the SEC, well, they're no other running for the
a c C. I I just I find it hard
that they would run the table at this point, although
I do think if they let's say they lost one
more but it wasn't Clemson and they ended up winning
the a SEC and and they finished eleven in two
(01:03:13):
with an a CEC title, I think that's the type
of case where the committee would go, Well, they did
lose Francois and they're clearly a very different team, so
we're gonna give him the benefit of the doubt, But
I just I don't know what's gonna happen. I mean,
I don't know enough about James Blackman to tell you
if he's going to be able to capably replaced DeAndre francois. Uh,
(01:03:38):
their center Alec Eberley was. You know, he lavished a
lot of praise on the kid the other night. Um,
but he's been there two months. I mean, nobody can
know at this point because he's going to be the
guy who can step in and then what happened? Did
he gets hurt? I mean, he's like six. What happens
(01:03:58):
if he gets hurt? There's another true freshman, daily hawkman
behind him. There's J. J. Constantino who's been there four
years now and hasn't really been able to crack any
of the competition. So that's that's gonna be a problem now.
That defense is gonna keep them in just about every game.
So I think they got a puncher's chance now to
(01:04:21):
win the a SEC. But it kind of depends on
how good is black Men and how healthy healthy can
they keep him because he's a very skinny true freshman,
and you know that's not what you want when you're
going into a stretch where you play Miami and NC
State and consecutive weeks and they have fantastic d lines. Andy,
(01:04:43):
can you stick with us here for a sec. We're
gonna go to our one minute trending. I'm gonna bring
in my guy, Ralph Irvan. Ralph tell us what's going
on out in l A. Well, you talk about college
football on of course, there was one game in the
top twenty five last night, number twenty one Virginia check
being number twenty two West Virginia three. The one that
game being played at FedEx Field. There will be the
(01:05:04):
one game tonight. You're in Atlanta four at number twenty
five Tennessee taken on Georgia Tech at the new Mercedes
Benz Stadium on the Diamonds Sunday, the Dodgers, well, now
they've lost eight of nine as they fall in San
Diego six to four. Max Freed won his MLB debut
in Atlanta, took out the Cubs five one, Domingo Santana
(01:05:26):
two on runs. Milwaukee a seven to winner over Washington.
In the American League, the Cleveland Indians are red hot
eleven straight games. They beat Detroit eleven and one, and
the Yankees nine two over Boston, New York with four
home runs. With Drew Car, you can find out what
other people in your area paid for the same car.
You're looking for, new or used. Visit Truecar to enjoy
(01:05:48):
a more confident car buying experience. And brock Osweiler will
be getting his physical today in Denver. If he passes that,
his one year deal with the Broncos will be official.
Good stuff, my man, Ralph, and I'll reiterate. With True Car,
you can find out what other people in your area
paid for the same car you're looking for an average
save over three grand f M s r P. Whether
(01:06:08):
you're looking for a newer use car, vis it True
Car to enjoy a more confident car buying experience. We're
talking to Andy Staples at Andy Underscore Staples on Twitter
as we break down the weekend that was in college football. Andy,
on the flip side, we were talking about Florida State.
Would you be stunned if Bama is not at least
going in the SEC seven and one and putting themselves
(01:06:31):
into unless Auburn goes undefeated obviously and wins that tie break,
putting themselves into the SEC title game like I saw
nothing that makes me believe that that that Alabama is
not gonna win the SEC again. Oh, I think Alabama
is gonna win the SEC again, And I'm gonna probably
picked him until somebody else does. But you're all in
on the Auburn thing. Did you not see L s
(01:06:52):
U not let b YU crossed the fifty? No, they
were fantastic, talked that. Yeah, we talked about that earlier.
I just I don't believe that L. S U is
going to go on the road and beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, right, Yeah,
I can see like craziness happening in German hair. Yeah.
I don't think he's beating Alabama either. I said that earlier, Like,
if you're trying to judge your team based on how
(01:07:13):
they do against Alabama, that's a bad comparison. So I
think Bama is going to make the playoff for the
fourth straight year. I mean, the only team that's done that.
Um and we talked. We were sitting during the game,
Jalen Hurts. I went and looked at the stats after
the game, and I'm like, he didn't even throw for
a hundred yards. But you and I were sitting there
saying you know, and he looks more comfortable in the pocket.
It seemed like to me. Did it seem like that
to you as well? When you even when you went
back and watch this game and kind of broke it down,
(01:07:36):
It did. And the thing about it is, I'm not
sure they're going to play a defensive gives for States
and the rest of it exactly right. And that was
an elite defense. They were playing with two really good
defensive him I mean, Brian Byrnon Josh Sweat were we're
in Hurts his face and Clemson, you know, Clemson has
(01:07:58):
that Ohio State has that They're not going to see
that again until the playoffs maybe Auburn or Elis he
was is that good? But you know, I don't know
that they're going to be as good at stopping to
run as for a State was. Alabama is going to
be able to run the ball in most teams, and
so yeah, I think you're going to see their offense
be a little more productive against just about everybody else.
(01:08:20):
I think this was a case of floor Stay's defense
being really good. But that said, they were in jail. Hurts'
says a lot, and he didn't look like he looked
again last year he did. He wasn't kind of freaking
out his plays broke down or um just making bad
throws or very you know, inaccurate throws. It looked like
(01:08:40):
he knew where he wanted to go at the ball.
If that didn't work, he was going to run it.
And it's just very calm and I think I think
he's doing quite a bit better. And my guess is
his passing numbers will reflect that after he played some
some more normal defenses. We're talking to Andy Stables. You
can follow him on Twitter at Andy on your Score Staples.
(01:09:00):
He writes at s I Okay, Michigan Florida. Do we
learn more about Michigan or Florida there. I came on
the show today in the first hour, second hour as well,
and said, look, I mean, I know everybody's upset about
what happened with A and M, but if I'm just
being objective here, I would be more nervous about the
Florida situation than I would the A and M situation
because I thought Florida got dominated in a way that
(01:09:23):
rarely has happened in the last twenty years of Gator football.
You played at Florida, you live in Gainesville. What did
you learn from that game? And how nervous should Florida
fans be based on the result? Oh? Really nervous, really nervous.
Now I'm the one who kept telling people I don't
care that Michigan lost all those starters. Now they're going
(01:09:44):
to play all the Harbor recruits and so don't expect
to drop off. And you didn't see a drop off.
In fact, that defense may wind up being better across
the board talent wise. I don't know. You know, the
results last year were very good, but they could be
just as good this year with Florida. You know, we
(01:10:06):
thought the offensive line had gotten veteran was going to
be one of the strengths. That was clearly not the case.
I was not surprised all by the quarterback. I knew
they didn't have a quarterback that they believed in, otherwise
they would have named the starter months ago. So the
thought was, though the Lions should be able to protect
him a little bit. You know, we've got some receiving
(01:10:28):
targets to throw to this and finally, but he wasn't protected.
And then, you know, Frank sin Ziar did some things
that even if they had blocked well, those guys wouldn't
have been able to do anything productive with them all.
So it's gonna be a it's gonna be a long
(01:10:50):
year from Florida. Um, you know, when they get the
guys back from suspension. Jordan Scarlett Antonio Callay, there will
be more options on offense. But if you can't block
any buddy, then it doesn't really matter if it's in
the game because they're still like if you handed the starlet,
if you can't block, you're still gonna have four guys
tackling him. And you can't throw at the calais if
(01:11:11):
you're on your back, So they're going to have to
get it figured out. As far as the quarterback goes,
I don't know what you do. Maybe you go with
Franks because his ceiling is the highest, and maybe he'll
settle in and he gives you something as a year
goes on, But it doesn't look great. It doesn't look
(01:11:32):
great for sure. Now us were gonna go all the
way across the coast we talked about u C L
a USC. I feel like this game kind of slid
under the radar a little bit because the Bama FSU
game was going on at the same time, and people
kind of just looked at the final score and they
didn't pay attention to how close it was. USC gets
Stanford this weekend. Next weekend, after that, they get Texas.
(01:11:52):
All right, so two massive games for USC program. Should
the USC fans be nervous or should it be like
the n C Double a tournament if you win a
close first game and say, we weren't great, but we
know what we've got. We still have a lot of talent,
no major issues coming out of this game. Let's just
refocus on what we do. What should the USC fan
base kind of mindset be in the wake of that
(01:12:13):
close game against Western Michigan. Well, they should be nervous
this week because Stanford has been a bad matchup for
them the last few years. Uh, they should have been
nervous about that regardless as a results of Western Michigan.
I don't put too much stock in the Western Michigan
game as a predictor of whether USC is good or bad.
I I'm not surprised that Western Michigan put up a
(01:12:35):
good fight. I never understood the idea that USC was
going to roll over them anyway, because these seen in
the Cotton Bowl last year and I get that they
lost p J. Slack in the quarterback and the best receiver,
but these are still guys that played in big games.
They weren't going to be intimidated by the atmosphere, and
you know, they played a good game, So I don't
I don't have a problem with with the way USC
(01:12:57):
played or the fact that the Western Michigan kept it close,
But Stanford should have been a game that USC people
were worried about all along, and you know, there's no
reason to change that. In the USC. It didn't look
like a complete juggernaut Stanford. We saw them play against
Rice and Rice was obviously overmatched. But the fact that
(01:13:19):
Stanford has found the tight end as part of the
patching game again is probably not good for USC, because
this is gonna look like one of those Stanford teams
that won the Pack twelve and now USC has to
get past him and just he's lost in three years
in a row. I don't know this is this is
(01:13:39):
one of their tougher tests. And then the Texas thing
is interesting because now after we saw Texas luis to Maryland,
we are assuming the USC was just destroy Texas, and
I don't know what Texas is gonna look like in
two weeks because they got a new staff, they can
maybe work the kinks out for the first tame. I
don't know, but yeah, so this this could be a
(01:14:01):
very interesting two weeks for USC. And what I've been
saying along with USC, we handed them to pack twelve
but didn't look at their schedule. They've got some tough
stretches and they have no open date. So if USC
can get through this, they will have earned their way
in the playoffs. Last question for you. We're down here
(01:14:23):
in Georgia. You're going to the Tennessee Georgia Tech game.
I believe as well you were at Bama f s U.
Georgia is playing just down the road a little bit
in Athens. They beat obviously get a decent win over
app State, but jacob Eesan comes out of that game
with an injury. They're going on the road this weekend
against Notre Dame. What are you hearing about jacob Eeson's
leg is in any situation? Do you think he'll be
(01:14:45):
able to play? What's the story there? Well, that's unclear.
I'm gonna try to find out a little more today,
and it could be an interesting situation there because Jake
Frog came in and and really did a good job
leading the offense. He's a true freshman. Now. He doesn't
throw of the deep ball nearly as well as Jacobison,
but he also has a little bit of a you
(01:15:06):
know that guy quality about him that the team seems
to get behind. And you know, the offense was moving
the ball against the Applasia State and this is a
team that had a lot of the same pieces in
place last year and just could not do anything. So
the fact that they're moving the ball is is a
really good sign. Applasia State is a good team. So
(01:15:26):
the way they played that game, the way they handled them,
I think I kind of inspire some confidence. Now George's
secondary is going to get tested because Notre Dame can
really fling it around. Brandon Wimbush is excellent. I think
you can see a pretty high scoring game and South
then because I'm not sure either defense is ready for
(01:15:47):
what they're about to face. Outstanding stuff. Andy, Happy Labor Day.
We will talk with you or ton I'll see you
tonight at the game. All right. I fear that is
Andy Stables. Go follow him at Andy un your score.
Staples s I dot com writer as well. Go read
his articles. I'm Clay Travis. Final segment hour to Happy
Labor Day, all of you here on Fox Sports Radio.

Whether you're looking for a new or used car. Visit
True Car to enjoy a more confident car buying experience.
Confident Show here. Confident Show because we have had some
spectacular gambling picks eleven and two start to the season Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
(01:16:38):
Tonight's game. I'm gonna be at Tennessee, Georgia Tech here
in Atlanta. Great weekend other than my car getting broken
into and all my possessions being stolen. Never a good
trip when you have to go to UH to Walmart
to go buy toothpaste and socks and UH and shooes.
Mike Buddy Chad with Row came down Saturday night and
brought me a couple of a couple his shirts. I'm
(01:17:00):
doing the show in one of his shirts today, and
I'll be doing the game where in one of his
shirts as well. So thanks to that, I don't have
a suitcase right now, so the underwear as I'm finishing
it off, I'm just throwing it in a sack. So
that is always an unexpected occurrence. But the Atlanta Police
actually helped out a decent amount there trying to track
down everything that got stolen out of my car. The
(01:17:22):
tough thing is always you get a broken window. It's
like it sucks to get anything stolen out of your car,
but the window is like the worst part you have
to go. I was, you know, vacuuming out all the glass,
like you have to go get an appointment to get
a new window put in. Like, you know, I almost
wish if people were gonna steal things out of my car,
I just leave the car door unlocked where the attendant bailed.
(01:17:44):
The attendant bailed like I paid him and he said, uh,
he said, I'm good to go. Um, you know, like
everything's taken care of. I parked literally directly underneath a
huge light. Uh. It's a good neighborhood relatively speaking of Atlanta.
You know, I picked that lot because I'm like everybody
can see it. It seems like it's a really safe lot.
It was a pay lot. It's not like I was
just parked on the street. Um and uh, I mean
(01:18:07):
there was a cop. I didn't even realize that my
car had been broken into, because I was coming back
from our event in Atlanta and so at the the
sports bar here stats. So I walked back out and
I go to put my you know, to open my
car door, and they had broken out the the passenger
side rear window. So it's the exact opposite you know,
(01:18:28):
diagonal from where I was, and I hadn't even noticed
that the window was broken out yet. I was just
going there. There were a couple of different cars that
got broken into, um, in that same parking lot, and
I'm guessing I probably missed it by like five minutes,
uh if that, because the cops were almost immediately there,
and I was like, man, this just sucks, right, I mean,
because it's like midnight. I've been driving and been working
(01:18:48):
all day and I'm just trying to get back to
the hotel so i can go to bed. And then
next thing you know, I'm sitting there with a cop
and we're going through the process of filing police reports
and everything else, and they're trying to track down the
the iPad and my iPhone because you can like do
define function, you know, as long as they're on WiFi
and uh, and we'll see whether or not they're able
(01:19:10):
to actually catch the people who did it based on that. Um,
so you know, I mean in general, like it sucked,
but the cops have been pretty good about it. And uh,
I've already gone out and had to replace everything, so hopefully,
you know, it's like you suddenly have to learn how
to you get used to a laptop. I'm not a
guy who has expensive laptops because I travel so much.
I always assume they're gonna break. So I just go
(01:19:30):
by like a three or four hundred dollar laptop, figure
that it's gonna be good for four, you know, three
or four years probably for that amount. I mean it's
in saying how cheap laptops are now, they're like, uh,
you know, television, so like you can get a flat
screen television like seventy inches now for fift bucks. I means,
unbelievable how cheap things are. And uh, anyway, it was
that was kind of crappy, but the gambling picks paid
for everything. I'm eleven and two on gambling. Did you
(01:19:53):
guys take the pics, Dannig, do you take the picks
at all? You heard me? You sit here right here,
you listen to me. Eleven and two out of the
out of the gate. Do you take any of them?
I sure did. There you go making making the world
a better place. Jason Martin, you said somebody just called
in praising the picks. Yeah, somebody calls and talks to
me every once in a while. Barton Michigan made seven
fifty dollars off your picks this week. I am going
to do it this week. I'm gonna pick at least
(01:20:15):
three or four year games and put some money down.
I'm I'm gonna see whether or not you can make
me money. Well, you still have to pick the right ones,
because you could. There's probably somebody out there who listened
to me. Give you thirteen picks, and they picked the
two that I lost. But eleven in two so far
against the number, we got two tonight, we got Tennessee
and we've got the over. We'll see if we can
finish off with a thirteen and two opening weekend or
(01:20:35):
at least hopefully split but pretty phenomenal. So thanks for
all the feedback on there. You can find me on
Twitter at Clay Travis. Final hour of the show. Up next,
we've got Gary Danielson from CBS Sports. We'll see what
he thought about the opening weekend to college football. Next
on Fox Sports Radio, Welcome back in Labor Day edition
our three. I hope wherever you guys are, that you
(01:20:56):
were having a spectacular start to your holiday, And obviously
you are because you are starting it with us here
at OutKick the Coverage, and that is going to be
hopefully a good way for you to start your day
in the weeks and months ahead, especially now that we
have got football season off and rolling. Uh. It is
(01:21:18):
a It's been a heck of a gay, heck of
a day so far, so many different games to react to.
And I want to tell you a true car You
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for and on average
save over three grand off M S r P. Whether
you're looking for a new or used car. Is it
true guard to enjoy a more confident car by experience
so many different games that we have talked about. We're
(01:21:39):
gonna talk with Gary Danielson here in the next segment
and from CBS Sports and we'll break down all the
different games that are out there. I asked a poll question.
I'm actually kind of surprised by the answer, and I
want to get you guys answer on this as well.
I said, who should be more upset today? Which SEC
fan base should be more upset today? Texas A and
(01:22:00):
them or Florida with their Week one loss. And to me,
I watched both those games almost their entirety. Of both
of them, I think that Florida fans have a lot
more reason to be upset because I think Florida's loss
was more reflective of the team that they are. In
other words, they're not gonna be very good. They don't
(01:22:20):
got a quarterback, and I know that Antonio Kyllaway wasn't playing,
and I know that Scarlett wasn't playing at running back.
And you can make all the excuses you want for
the Gators, but this is year three and what Jim
mcawaine was hired to do was fixed the offense. The
offense that has not worked for the Florida Gators since
Tim Tebow was the quarterback there into the years of
(01:22:40):
Urban Meyer, they were awful. They were never good offensively
under Will must Champ, even when they won eleven games
in his second season, and they got his beat, and
they got beat as badly as I have seen a
Florida Gator team get beat in twenty or twenty five
years by Jim Harbaugh in Michigan. Now, I think you
can give a lot of credit to Jim Harbaugh in
Michigan and say, boy, this team is gonna be very good.
(01:23:01):
Uh in ann Arbor. I don't think there's any doubt
about that. And I think this was a big statement
game for both teams. But A and M was the
underdog in that game and played well enough to get
up forty four to ten. If you just told A
and M fans, or SEC fans or college football fans
in general, hey, guess what. You're gonna lose this game
(01:23:22):
on the road in the Rose Bowl, but you are
going to lose it in a way that a touchdown
Paths is gonna be thrown with about thirty five seconds
left in that game, and you're gonna lose by a point.
I think A and M fans would have to say, ah,
you know what, we'll take it. And instead of getting
up forty four to ten, if you had gone back
(01:23:43):
and forth, let's say and it'd been a true shootout
and neither team had led by more than ten points throughout.
I think A and M fans would feel pretty good
about their way their young team acquitted itself. So I
know everybody as prisoners of the moment, I know you're
not reacting necessarily to the game as a whole. You're
just reacting at giving up the lead. But to me,
(01:24:05):
that is the way that this should be looked at
and acknowledged. Is to me, A and M s might
still be okay. We don't know how good U. C. L.
A is. We don't know how good Texas A and
M is. I'm pretty convinced after watching Florida play against
Michigan that Florida is not gonna be very good, that
the SEC East may well be another dumpster fire and
(01:24:27):
there might not be any good teams. Now we'll see
what happens when Georgia goes on the road against Notre Dame.
Obviously it's early in the year. But if I'm a
Florida Gator fan, every fear that I had was confirmed
by that game against Michigan. Now, if I'm a Texas
A and M fan, I say, man, you know we
traveled all the way across the country. We should have
won this game with a young team. We lost. But
(01:24:52):
maybe this season is gonna have a different trajectory. Maybe
we can win the next four. I think that's to happen.
That's possible. And then you're sitting at four and one.
Let's go around the horn, boys, do you think that's crazy?
Is that a crazy position for me to have? That?
Of the two teams that lost, I would say crushing
games Texas A and M and Florida A and M
was crushing because of the way they lost, not necessarily
(01:25:14):
because of the way they played overall, Whereas Florida, I
think it's probably just a seven and five type team
based on what I saw against Michigan. I think it's
an interesting point to make. It's almost like do you
want to get stabbed repeatedly for four hours or do
you just want to take one in the throat like
immediately and be done. Because I think the better point
(01:25:35):
it's like Game of Thrones. It's like, do you want
to be the guy who is like winning the fight
throughout the entire fight and then suddenly you just get
knocked out by a hell mary Because that's basically what happened, right,
It was like you win the fight for the first
ten rounds, and then in rounds eleven and twelve you
just get your brains beat in and the last like
part of the twelveth round when you get knocked out
because A and M dominated that fight, if you want
(01:25:56):
to make a boxing analogy for ten rounds and then
just got act at the very end. It was a
little bit like remember the Game of Thrones trial by
combat when uh, when what what? What? Who was it?
What was his name? Prince Over in Prince Over and
looks like he's gonna beat the mountain and he starts
strutting around like cockily, and then it's like leon the ladders,
he's about to score and the touchdown play and then
(01:26:16):
next thing, you know, like everything falls apart. I mean
that was a little bit like A and M I
thought in this game in general. Yeah, and look, Frank's
through a really nice ball. His first pass was like
this over shoulder throw to the side sort of a
D ball. Is like, wow, this kid can play. That
was like the last highlight for Florida's offense in this game.
And Michigan, I mean, Wilson Spate's not somebody that impresses
(01:26:39):
me all that much, and he made a couple of
big mistakes, but at no point did I think Michigan
was not in control of that football game. So it
really was like the thing about it is, if your
Texas A and M, you are a riding high for
three quarters as a fan, and then you just have
that really big let down, and maybe initially that sting
and that shock hurts more. But if you look at
it from Florida's perspective, if you're a Florida fan, what
(01:27:02):
positives did you really take away from Saturday? That's exactly
what I'm saying. Like, there is A and M lost,
and they were expected to lose on the road against
a first round quarterback in Josh Rosen who got insanely
hot and made really a series of fantastic plays down
the stretch. If I'm A and M, I like, I know,
(01:27:23):
it's only been a few hours since you guys lost
in the touchdown pass on the fake spike in the
corner of the end zone. I understand it's painful, But
if you take a step back and look at it,
A and M versus Florida two big time sec programs
that lost difficult cross sectional games Pack twelve and also
the Big Ten. I think Michigan is really good, but
(01:27:45):
I think they exposed Florida as a very mediocre team,
and that's more of an issue to me than losing
a game against the first round quarterback. Again, the Gators
could have lost that game forty two to three. I mean,
if they don't have those two picks six is, then
that game is not even remotely close. They couldn't run
the ball, they don't have a quarterback, they couldn't block.
(01:28:06):
I mean, I don't know on the offensive side of
the ball. Jim mcawaen is supposed to be this offensive
genius and now in year three he can't do anything
on the offensive side of the ball. I just I
think that Jim mcawaen could go south really quickly in Florida.
Whereas I look at A and M and I say, okay, like,
I don't think I'm not convinced that A and M
is awful. You know, I'm not convinced that that that
(01:28:28):
that they're great, mighty stretch of the imagination, because I
don't know how good U. C. L. A Is. But
I think it's fair to say that everybody out there
listening to us right now would acknowledge that Josh Rosen
is a pretty good quarterback and then he's gonna be
a first round quarterback, and that the way he played
in the fourth quarter, to me, was more about Josh
Rosen than it was about A and M falling apart.
(01:28:48):
You know, anytime you have somebody give up a big lead,
everybody forgets that you had to play pretty dog go
on well to get that big lead. For about two
thirds of that game, A and M was really really good,
and so they had to play well enough to get
that lead in order to give it up. And I
think the reason that they gave it up. Certainly they
can go back and address tons of things that they
(01:29:08):
would change defensively, but I think it was more about
how Josh Rosen was playing than it was A and
M's collapse on that side of the ball, Which is
why I think it's so wild. If you're just starting
off your day with us happy Labor Day, why I
think it's so wild that an immediate aftermath of that game,
one of the ten Texas A and M regents went
to Facebook and to Twitter and said, uh, and I'm
(01:29:32):
quoting from the final uh final paragraph, I'll just read
the whole thing. I'm sure I may be criticized for
this post, but I honestly don't care. I've been on
the board of regents for the A and M system
for almost seventy years. During that time, I've not once
commented on Kevin Sumlin and his performance during his tenure
at our school. I never said a word when he
and his agent manipulated a much bigger and longer contract.
(01:29:53):
By the way, not really a fair statement. The job
of a coach and an agent is to get as
much money as they possibly can, right, That's the goal.
You can't criticize them from manipulating a much bigger and
longer contract. That's like criticizing somebody for making as much
money as they can. That's their goal. I said nothing
about his arrogance. I know Kevin Sumlin pretty well and
(01:30:13):
I have never found him to be arrogain. I like
the guy quite a bit, UH and his mishandling of
multiple player controversies. I said nothing when we had multiple
awesome recruiting classes only to see key players leave our
school or underperform. But tonight I am very disappointed. This
is a comment from one of the members of the
Texas A and M Board of Regents, guy by the
name of Tony Busby. But tonight I am very disappointed
(01:30:33):
and I have to say this, and he sent this
out right after the loss to u C l A.
Kevin Someone was out coach tonight, which isn't new. He
recruits well, but can't coach the big games or the
close games. Our players were better tonight, our players were
more talented tonight, but our coaches were dominated on national TV.
Yet again. I'm only one vote on the Board of Regents,
(01:30:55):
but when the time comes, my vote will be that
Kevin Someone needs to go all caps. In my view,
he should go now. We owe it to our school
and our players. We can do better. If they fired
him now, they would owe him eleven point to five
million dollars within sixty days. Now. A and M has
got a lot of money. But I think this is
(01:31:15):
an insane commentary. If you want to fire Kevin Someone
at the end of the year or in November, when
it's clear that he is not going to come back
perfectly fine, like he understands that he understands what the
obligations and responsibilities are of a big time SEC football coach.
But after one week of the season, when A and
(01:31:36):
M has got several games on, in my opinion this calendar,
that they can get their roll back a little bit.
They're gonna beat Nicols State, They're gonna beat Louisiana Lafayette.
Then they'll be in Jerry World down in Dallas against
Arkansas on a toss up game. Then they get South
Carolina back at home. It's not inconceivable that A and
M is gonna be four and one when Alabama comes
(01:31:56):
to College Station. Now they're gonna lose to Alabama, but
everybody's gonna lose to Alabama. They can win at Florida,
they can beat Mississippi State, they can beat Auburn, they
can beat New Mexico, they can beat Old miss and
then they finished with L s U. I can look
at at a Texas and M schedule and say, hey,
they can get to nine and three, five and three
in the SEC. Now five six and two in the SEC.
(01:32:17):
I think that's possible. But to me, I just think
it's crazy. In general. Doug gottlie when we bring in
my guy, Doug gottlieb obviously on from three to six
Eastern part of the best lineup that's ever existed in
the history of any national sports talk radio chain. Doug,
what's up, my man? How are you welcome to Texas?
(01:32:38):
And it's funny, great, thank you having me on, Like
I understand that, Like SEC guys like, well they were
good that one year, Like nowu's been what after the one?
Johnny Man tell you, which, by the way, Mandel, everything
(01:32:58):
is greened around winning at out in Alabama? Correct, Like
that's that's the entire lure, am I correct? Yes? Okay?
Which again they nearly lost, right, they had a big
league in the prostapp and the only gag that sucker
way after that four and four and SEC play three
and five, four and four, four and four, which scene
is disappointing unless you actually watched Texas A and M
(01:33:20):
football through the length of time in which they were
in the Big twelve. They are amazing Texas and M
things said their Texas and they're not. They don't win
anything in the modern era. What have they actually accomplished?
They won the Big twelve South in ninety seven and
tied in and that was when Texas was at the
(01:33:41):
absolute the John mcavic era, And that's when Oklahoma was
in the John Blake era, the two worst coaches to
co occupy two great national powers in the history of
those national powers. And that's the only way in which
Texas A and M could win the Big Twelve. That's it.
They never finished about third place until Mike Sherman went Uh,
(01:34:06):
I think he was. I think he tied for first
like in two thousand and ten, and then he was
fired like the very next year. Yeah, I get all that.
I do think that the addition of the SEC has
the potential to change everything for A and M. So
I think again, like between these two schools, I'm a
(01:34:27):
lot more nervous about Florida if I'm a Florida fan.
Now listen, I thought and was playing the wrong quarterback
at the end of the game. The Mon's kid looked
like a freshman, and he just looked overwhelmed by the moment.
And they were running the hell out of the ball,
even throwing it all in the fourth quarter. Was was blasphemy. Um,
(01:34:48):
But yeah, I mean it looks like that dude that
there on the offensive side of the football, or as
Florida says, no clue offensively, I thought you pointed out
perfectly you know those two pig sixes, they got three
points in the board. I mean yeah. And the other
thing is culturally, Florida is still Steve Spurrier school. Like
when you think about the Florida Gators, you think about
(01:35:10):
the fund and gun offense, you think about the swamp,
you think about it being sweaty, hot points just raining
down like a rainstorm on the team that you're playing against.
And even when Will much Champ won defensive games, they
didn't like it. And now they've done it for two
more years and they brought him in there to coach
a style of football that he fundamentally is not doing.
(01:35:31):
I actually think that Florida fans should be more nervous
today as they face Week two than A and M
fans should be. I'm alright, here's the deal. Uh And
I think U c l A is as the opposite
benefit of it. In basketball, if you don't have a
point guard, it's gonna make you look like a much
worse coast than you actually aren't. Ad vice versa. In football,
(01:35:53):
you got a quarterback, I mean it's gonna I mean
Jim mcaleen, like you said, he had a reputation and
it wasn't us because of what he did Alabama's preceding
Alabama and what he did turning around Colorado State as
a guy who's really good with quarterbacks, really good with offenses,
and they looked completely in s now. Part of it
is you Justigan got some dudes, right, eleven guys from Florida.
(01:36:16):
Jim Harba is not an idiot. He went to that place,
was like, all right, we have good defensive players. Let's
keep loading up. We win this thing in recruiting. And
that was a really fast defense. But I'm with you
because that looked like the the sec problem that all
of us who watched the entire landscapeball college football found
last year, and nothing wrong with that team, rather than
(01:36:38):
they don't got a quarterback, they don't have a guy
who can make you look like a better coach as
opposed to U C. L A. And where Jim Moore
Jimmay was fired at the app the chick Kelly r
last thing exactly three quarters like I got UC guy
um emailing like how fast can we get Jim Kelly
to Westwood right? And and be kind of quarterback in
(01:37:01):
the in the fourth quarter. I think I think just
comes down to nothing more than quarterback play. I'm going
and looked a lot better. Uh little job. It's really
that simple now, there's no doubt. Indeed, I appreciate the call, Doug.
Listen to Doug three to six Eastern, Gonna go to
break now up. Next, Gary Danielson is going to join
(01:37:24):
us CBS Sports lead announcer there and we'll see what
he thinks. Who should be more unhappy? A and m
or Florida. What did you think of Michigan? What do
you think of the college football landscape in general? We
will discuss that and more with him next on Fox
Sports Radio. Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Labor Day edition.
And I don't know if Gary Danielson remembered it was
(01:37:44):
Labor Day when he said he was gonna come on
with us, but I appreciate him coming on with us
on a holiday. And this has been a long holiday
for everybody. Gary. We got a Thursday, of Friday, a Saturday,
a Sunday, and now a Monday night football game going
on Tennessee Georgia Tech play tonight. I'm down in Atlanta
getting ready for that one. But we saw a lot
happen last night, and that's where I want to start
with you, Gary uh one of the regents already calling
(01:38:06):
for Kevin Sumlin to be fired in the wake of
a forty five forty four loss. I don't know if
you've seen that, but their ten A and M regents.
One of them went on Facebook and Twitter last night
and said, I'm only one vote on the Board of Regents,
and this is Tony Buzby. But when the time comes,
my vote will be that Kevin Summlin needs to go.
(01:38:28):
In my view, he should go. Now. We owe it
to our school and our players. We can do better.
I think that's crazy. You, well, he has one vote,
but it looks to me like he's trying to make
his one vote bigger than one vote. Yeah, why doesn't
he just vote when Yeah, that's a good point. I mean,
(01:38:50):
so listen, Clay. You know I've been in big time athletics,
you know, since when I enrolled at Purdue to follow
up Mike Phipps, who followed up Bob Greasy and there
were five other all state quarterbacks trying out to replace
Mike Phipps, and then played thirteen years in the NFL,
(01:39:10):
and now it has been one of the lead analysts
at ESPN ABC and CBS, and in your business as
a big time personality with your own website and a
radio show, we're all under competition. This this is nothing
new to Kevin Sumlin. And you know, whether people UH
(01:39:31):
have the need to go out and tell everybody how
they feel about it or not. I don't think Kevin
sumone is surprised that if he doesn't win, you're not
going to keep a four and a half or five
million dollar job. You know, at quarterback, if you don't win,
you get replaced at When you run a website, if
nobody clips clicks on it, you go out of business.
(01:39:53):
So this is all These coaches get a little bit
frustrated by this, and I get it, you know, but
I always tell them that if you want one of
those jobs where you don't get the outside press and
the fans, you know, go coach at Hillsdale and and
and do track in the off season and have a whistle.
(01:40:13):
You'll make a hundred fifty dollars. You'll be very happy,
and and you'll work with great kids, and it's still
coaching football. But when you take jobs big time business,
you know, just like big time quarterbacks, big time people
in any business, you get scrutiny, and I don't think
it bothers Kevin and it really doesn't bother me that much.
I asked this question on Twitter. Florida looked awful. You've
(01:40:36):
watched Florida play a lot of times over the years.
Is that more a function of Florida or Michigan. Well,
I think it's a combination. I'm not trying to cop
out here, but I think both programs. Um. I think
there's been a little bit too much fallout on Florida.
You know, they they're missing their best running back, their
(01:40:56):
best receiver, and they're not deep at either one of
those positions, and they have struggled since Tim Tebow was
their quarterback. I mean, Jim mcelwaine will have to produce
at that office position or he will can come under scrutiny.
Remember he decided to go with Felipe Frank's instead of
Will Greer. I mean Will Greer would have come back, um,
And it was a decision made from both sides at
(01:41:19):
its best to part ways. So he has that position
has to produce. I don't think Florida is as bad
as they looked. Michigan is an elite, uh talented football
team right now, Um, they replaced stars with stars. They're
a good defense. But you know, I think you have
to take it into comparison of who they stopped. Florida
(01:41:42):
last year was stopped by lesser defenses than Michigan. So
I think a little bit too much panic, uh for Florida.
And maybe we're anointing Michigan's defense as the next Baltimore
Raven defense is not quite fair either. I think we
should all listen to Aaron Rodgers and kind of relax
on the back off. We're talking to Gary Danielson, CBS
(01:42:05):
Sports analysts'm I'm I'm down here in Atlanta, Gary, and
I went to the Alabama and the Florida State game.
And I'm not an next as a nose guy. But
what I love to do when I'm sitting up in
the press box up high is I watched the game
at a basic level. How good does a defense do
at eliminating space? Right? I mean, ultimately, that's the job
(01:42:25):
of if you boil down football offense, the job is
to create space. Defense, the job is to eliminate space.
I love watching Nick Saban defenses, and I'm sure you
see this in the press box. So frequently too, because
when they're really kind of jelling, and they were jelling
in that second half against Florida State, there was no
space there, like an anaconda slowly strangling you. And that's
(01:42:48):
what I saw in the second half against Florida State.
What did you see in this game? I saw four
turnovers in five plays by Florida State. I thought it
was a pretty even game. I thought both teams showed
that they're stocked with a lot of great athletes. I
thought Jandre Francois did a good job in the first half,
(01:43:08):
but they kind of got off track. And you're right,
the anaconda, uh kind of comparison is apt. However, I
remember back when I was doing Cam Newton's game against
Alabama at Alabama when they came back from twenty to three,
and at halftime Phil Savage came to me in the
(01:43:30):
press box and said, you will now see the anaconda
strangle this Auburn team. Wow, just like last night with
U C l A. You gotta finish the game. And uh,
you know, things kind of spiraled away from Florida State
and any team last year. What it was it two
years ago when Alabama lost to Old miss with five turnovers.
(01:43:53):
You can't give a team of relatively equal talent, uh,
that type of a headstart and field position and not
have it to collapse on you. Just it just happens.
Alabama is too good. Uh. These teams before the injury
at quarterback, I thought could have both made the playoffs.
Now it seems unlikely that Jimbo unless he's the magician.
(01:44:14):
A lot of people give him credit for it. He
is a damn good coach. I think it's gonna be
tough to for them to to get back into the championship.
We've got Gary Daniel said he's gonna stick with us
through this next update here, but I want to bring
in right now, Ralph Irvin, tell me what you got
on man, Well, bad news for Florida stand as you mentioned,
Sophomore quarterback Gadire Francois will miss the rest of the season,
(01:44:35):
but tell attendant surgery to be performed one game on
that top Sunday Night, number twenty one Virginia techner over
number twenty two West Virginia and rappaport is reporting today
that brock osl Eiler will take his physical in Denver
(01:44:55):
once he passes that he will officially start his one
year deal with the Broncos. Win last night for San
Diego six four over the Dodgers. L A has now
lost eight of nine games. Arizona, meanwhile, has one ten straight.
They beat Colorado five one, Cleveland the hottest hum in
the majors. That's one eleven straight. They beat Detroit eleven one.
(01:45:15):
With True Car, you can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
new or used. Visit True Car to enjoy a more
confident car buying experience in Clay back to you with
Gary Danielson. Thanks my man, Gary Danielson. With us, Gary,
you've gotten hot before as a quarterback. You talked about
playing at Perdue Josh Rosen's performance after they got down
(01:45:38):
forty four to ten. Is that more a function of
him just taking his game to another level? Or did
you see a lot of things from A and M.
How did you assess that comeback, which is one of
the most unbelievable things we've ever seen in college football? Yeah,
since we saw the Super Bowl. That's true. Um right, Um, Clay,
it's it's a factor of everything. You know, Defenses when
(01:46:01):
they start to feel teams are moving the ball on them.
The you know, the d b s are are funny group.
They're they're very cocky group, but they don't want to
be blamed for losing the game. You know, quarterbacks can
take it. They do it every week, whether they win
or lose. They're used to answering the questions. But when
another team starts to put a run on you, the
(01:46:21):
dbs start to back up a half a foot and
give you some throws. And I thought when U c
l A created the pressure point with the tight end,
that really changed the dynamics for Texas A and m
all of a sudden, they were trying to cover up
a little hole there and opened up other holes. Uh.
The u c l A went from trying to establish
the run to just handing the ball to Josh Rosen
(01:46:43):
and say go ahead and throw. And it's also a
little bit you know, all sports are a little bit equal.
And you know when you say you watch a game,
um just as a layman and observed that that's how
I watch everything, to tell you the truth, even football, UM,
football and golf. When you're behind six or seven strokes,
you you don't have the ability to hit the balls
(01:47:03):
in the middle of the green and make a part.
You gotta shoot for the pins, and that can produce
double bogies or that can produce birdies. And that's what
Josh Rosen was doing. He was just letting it fly.
There were a couple of times those passes could have
produced double interceptions, but they didn't. They they you know,
it worked out great. They got it going and all
of a sudden, a team like Texas A and M
(01:47:25):
that was fragile because of what happened to him last
year when they collapsed, became even more fragile on the road.
They didn't have experience and quarterback. For whatever reason, Um
Kevin did not want to put in his veteran quarterback
in the game. I thought that was a mistake. But
one thing I'll say about these modern college football teams.
(01:47:47):
People don't believe it, but it's just as hard for
a ball control a fast paced, hurry up, no huddle
team to go slow as it is for a slow
team to go fast. And with Texas A and M
could not find another gear. They couldn't make a first down.
And if you notice when U. C. L A got
(01:48:08):
to within thirteen, Kevin someone and Nol Mazony decided to
go hurry up, no huddle, and and it was kind
of you're you're watching and go, what are you doing?
You gotta get this game over. But what they were
realizing is we can't go slow, we don't know how
to do it, we can't make a first down, and
they felt the other team catching them, and that's how
(01:48:28):
they kind of disintegrated. All these hurry up, no huddle
teams have that problem. But it was a great performance
by Josh Rosen. It's amazing how everybody can look from
one sideline to the other sideline about which coaches on
the hot seat within a span of about an hour.
It is extraordinary in that respect. We're talking to Gary
Daniels and CBS Sports SEC on CBS. L s U
(01:48:49):
dominated b y U. Gary. That game happened late on
Saturday night. I feel like a lot of people didn't notice,
but the stats that really kind of jump out. I'm
a total yardage guy. I love to check it out.
B Y you put up only ninety seven yards at
total offense. Meanwhile L s U had nearly five hundred.
L s U ran the ball fifty seven times two yards.
B Y you ran at fourteen times for minus five
(01:49:12):
yards physically dominating performance. Is l s U the second
best team in the SEC? Well, I think Auburn can
stake a claim to that right now. And we'll see
about Georgia. You know they're gonna go to Notre Dame
this week, And you're right. I was very impressed with
that game. And one of the reasons I was I've
done a lot of b y U games and Clay,
(01:49:32):
you know about that team. They played with a lot
of men in the defensive line and offensive line. They
have twenty three and twenty four year old men who
have been on missions. They're strong, They've always been strong
up front, and I thought, as a physical matchup for
l s U, this might be a challenging game. You
you had the stats, right, I got it right in
front of me. For sev b YU only ran thirty
(01:49:55):
eight plays in that football game. Now, you know, for
for whatever reason, I was just surprised that l s
U could man handle a physical at least when I
watched B y U play a physical team like that.
So yeah, I think that is really good news for
L s U. L s U is in a strange
(01:50:17):
spot with ed Or is run you know, Less a
great guy, and I've known Less forever. My tack offensive
tackle for Detroit Lions lined up right next to Less
at Michigan for three years. They're best friends. They went
on spring break together when they were at Michigan, and
I we always used to warn Less, don't don't get
in my face, Less, because I'm gonna tell all your
spring break stories and if you don't, be careful because
(01:50:39):
I know them all. Okay, But I got the feeling
there at the end that the team had lost confidence
in the play calling, in the system. They needed a
breath of fresh air, and Matt Canada was the perfect
guy to bring in. Uh, they're still huddling, but he's
got some new twists to what they still want to
do is b ls you and run it at you.
(01:51:01):
If Danny Entland takes the next step and he's healthy
this year more than last year, and if this offense
gives him easy throws, l s you could be a threat.
Now they have to go to Alabama, but uh, it
looked like a regular L. S U football team that
I saw when they were winning two long time blue
blooded programs. Texas loses at home, gives up fifty one
(01:51:24):
to Maryland. USC plays Western Michigan doesn't look that great
of the two. I'll ask you first about Texas, but
then also about USC. I'm sure you kind of paid
a little bit of attention to those games as well.
What were your thoughts? What's going on at Texas? How
did that game happen? I really think, Uh, first let's
start with if I could just to kind of get
(01:51:45):
them out of the way a little bit, USC had
to be looking ahead. Yeah, I mean they got Stanford
coming up. They they they're their schedules right in front
of them. And you know, Western, I don't know how
much you can preach to guys. And you know, when
you look at when you were from California and you
start hearing about a Michigan team and it's got a
direction in front of them, it's hard to get those
(01:52:05):
guys ready for it. And Western Michigan has been coached
well by Fleck, and you know, good football players has
something to prove, got out a role with that passing game.
So let's just kind of discount that one for USC.
And they have to prove it the next two weeks
against a good Stanford team coming up this week, the
Texas thing. This is really you know, the state of
(01:52:27):
Texas football with Baylor, Texas A and m in Texas.
My goodness, I mean, you know they're they're you know
Mac Brown used to tell me the toughest thing about
coaching at Texas is there's five Division one football players
and you get first choice. The problem is you got
(01:52:48):
to take your first choice going into their junior year
because those type of players want to know whether you commit.
And it's the guys you don't take that. The alumni
keep reminding you off and and when Drew Brees doesn't
go to Texas and goes somewhere else, you hear about
it for the next twenty years if you're the Texas
(01:53:08):
coach and you know, no one's infallible picking these guys
two years before the time. So boy, the status the
state of Texas football right now, I really feel bad.
And it wasn't a great week week for Florida football either.
The injury at Florida State. Florida I mean Lane Kiffin struggled,
Which Davis struggled. Charlie Strong was supposed to have a
(01:53:31):
strong team, they struggled. I mean, the two states that
produce arguably the most Division one football players are both
had a rough week to start out with Texas. You know,
they kind of lost their toughness trying. I think ever
since Vince Young took them to the championship, they became
(01:53:53):
a finesse spread football program, and it's gonna take a while,
I think for Tom Herman to get back that tough Now,
don't get confused about Tom Herman. He came up under
Urban Meyer. Urban Meyer runs the spread, but his foundation
was back with Lou Holtz where it was built on
toughness and competition. And it's going to take probably more
(01:54:16):
than a you know, a couple of games for Tom
Herman that turned that ship around in Texas. Great stat
for you about Texas Gary seventy nine and eleven up
until they lost that game, got Colt McCoy knocked out
against Alabama in the title game out there in the
Rose Bowl. Since that time, fifty four and forty six
overall in all the games they've played since then. It's
(01:54:38):
an amazing statistic when you really think about it. Was
there anything else I didn't ask you about that really
kind of jumped out at you from the final the
first weekend. Basically, maybe I'll ask you this to close
with Tennessee Georgia Tech. What do you see happening in
this game? I think it's an extremely uh important football
game for Tennessee. I'm not giving you anything that you
(01:54:58):
don't know about it. U. It's you know, there's a
lot of pressure on push to to win this game,
and Tennessee fans expect him to win this football game.
I would not want to open with a triple option
uh team in my first game. You have to devote
too much time for it in camp. I remember when
Ohio State won the national championship, they opened up with
(01:55:18):
Navy with both Joey Boza and Zeke Elliott and all
those players, and they almost lost that game. Uh. It's
it's a tough matchup. Tennessee will have to be ready
and then they'll have to flip it a week later
when they have to go back and play more standard offenses.
Is a triguing game. UM. I do want to make
one point. You asked me about it, but I forgot
the only red flag. And before everyone annoints Alabama and
(01:55:42):
they're a great football team, they lost two outside rushing
linebackers for the season, uh, Terrell Lewis and Christian Miller.
That was a position that was already worrisome form before
because their two draft picks, Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson.
I know they're loaded and they're stick stacked with a
lot of athletes, but when you lose multiple players at
(01:56:05):
the same position, it eventually starts to show. I would
not annoint Alabama with the national championship yet. I can't
wait to watch you. Gary. By the way, Joel Klatt,
pretty awesome job he did calling that comeback right now.
You have a good relationship with Joel. What's that experience
like watching somebody call a game like that. It's great
because you know, a lot of these guys I did
their games. You know. I did Kirk Herb Streets games
(01:56:27):
when he was at Ohio State. I did Joel when
he was at Colorado. They both were great kids when
we interviewed him back to the day, of course, you know,
and seeing these guys become pros at what they are,
you get a lot of those special games. You know,
I've been doing this since uh and you have to
save him and Joe and gust did a great job
with it. Outstanding stuff. And man, appreciate you waking up
(01:56:49):
early for us on a holiday. Look forward to talking
