You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from
the City of Angels. Hope you're having just the greatest
day ever. Don't get much better than this year a
sports fan, right, I mean, we can throw a little football,
but we got hoop, whoop and more hoop. Plus we

(00:44):
got day baseball, NLCS Game four, a LCS Game four.
And if you didn't like the acquisition of Robert too Assuna,
that's all right. Karma jumped up and bit him with
a Jackie Bradley ju your Grand Slam last night after
he hit two other socks imploding before our eyes. The

(01:07):
Warriors are good, The Celtics are good. The Sixers have
some work to do as well, some health to get
and the thunder have some work to do. But they
gotta get healthy. I still like that Thunder team. I
think they're gonna be very competitive in the West. Wouldn't
stun me if they end up being the second best
team in the West, whatever their record is, as they

(01:30):
wait for Russell Westbrook to get back healthy. I want
to talk about Mannie Machado, what he said, what he did,
how much of what he did last night is his fault?
How much of it is the fault of the first basement.
Didn't pull his foot? And oh yeah, by the way,
how do you go to the pen? It's not it's

(01:51):
not like they just played a thirteen inning game. They
played a thirteen inning game which ended locally like what
like eleven thirty and they have a two o'clock start time,
and and while is it's all hands on deck, that
was the most important game in any series in the playoffs,

(02:12):
because now, if you're the Dodgers, all right, you can
lose today, you can survive today. But if you're the Brewers,
you absolutely cannot. And how much can you go to
the pen? And both bullpens were incredible, and then you
know the way in which everything happens. Man him a
childom nearly picked off second base. And if he's not

(02:34):
even at second base or picked off the throwers right
at second base. He gets the second base on a
not even a pass ball, just a curveball in the
dirt that gets away from the catcher. If not from that,
he doesn't score. And if the throw the pickoff, you know,
when they try to pick him off at second they
get him, he obviously doesn't score anying over Uh, it's

(02:59):
a bruck Ober seventeenth. By the way, the Miami Dolphins
are gonna start brock Oswaller again. Josh Allen will sit
because of an elbow injury, and no, Nathan Peterman won't
be thrown to the Wolves. Nathan pick six Peterman will
not be thrown out there. Instead will be Derek Anderson.
We got football to talk about, we got NBA basketball

(03:21):
talk about. It does feel like the Mark hell Folts thing.
It's not a story that's gonna end great, especially considering
how good Jayson Tatum is and how much he struggled
last night. But I want to get to Lebron to
Kevin Durant. The Kevin Durant thing is fascinating. I started

(03:41):
yesterday with the idea of, hey, we don't know and
anybody who says they know doesn't really know. You know,
because Kevin Durant still has now eighty one games plus
a postseason to play. And and the simple pitch for

(04:01):
the Golden State Warriors who moved to San Francisco next
year is DoD you won three in a row, so
did Jordan's What if you won four? What if you
won five? Remember that Lebron James in Miami. Not one,
not two, not three, not four, five? That could actually
be you if you stay. There's a lot of other

(04:23):
moving parts. They re signed Clay Will he take anything
less than the max? Draymond Green who struggled last night,
looked like he was injured, bunch of turnovers, couldn't hit
a shot. What's his value on the open market. There's
a lot of moving parts out there. And because we

(04:44):
haven't played a season, we haven't. They ain'tven played a
practice with DeMarcus Cousins. Oh he has any idea what
the Warriors are gonna look like or maybe more importantly
feel like. Right, because this is about feelings, because it
was about facts, not feelings. The facts are dude, got buckets.
He won two finals m v P and two NBA championships.

(05:04):
In a row. If you win a third one, based
upon facts alone, you would never leave. They can pay
you more money to stay, and you're almost guaranteed to
at least be competitive in the Western Conference finals and
more likely win the thing for several years to come.
Injury notwithstanding, So we don't know how k D will

(05:27):
feel eight months from now. Speculating is super dangerous. That
was until his brother hops on Instagram and says, eighty
one more games before we out of here, right, that
was before his brother and I get it. There's been

(05:48):
lots of brothers who you know, from Roger Clinton two,
Eli Manning is not Peyton Manning, you know, pick the
There's always been a stray brother who will say something
that speaks completely out of turn. A Lonzo Ball has

(06:10):
a dad. Kevin Durant has a brother who takes to
Instagram and says, eighty one more I'm going to collect
him and get up out of here. But instead of
talking about the Warriors, instead of talking about as I
have predicted and discussed at nauseum here in the off season,

(06:30):
I think Durant's gonna go for the Gusto and try
and win a final, try and win a regular season
m v P. Instead of discussing his his utter and
sheer dominance, even when he can't make a three last night,
his unguardability. What are we talking about. We're talking about
an Instagram post which he has not commented on, which

(06:53):
leads us all to believe he is in fact going
to leave Golden State. And last year this time, everybody
said Lebron was gone, and there were enough signs to
believe that he would be gone. And yes yesterday, yesterday
I said Paul George. Everybody thought Paul George wanted out
of Oklahoma City. But you didn't see anybody in his

(07:14):
family tweeting about where he was gonna play. Has anyone
family done more harm to them to their brand then
the Durants on social media? And you can sit there
and say that the president, but the fact is that
an after social media president doesn't get elected. And instead

(07:39):
of simply celebrating the rings, celebrating the wind, looking forward
to competing for another one, this is what we're talking about.
It was like the Durant family can't stay off social media,
can't say the right thing, can't can't just figure out
a way to tighten things up and whatever happens in

(08:01):
eight months, happens eight months now the Warriors, no matter
what is said, now what Kevin Durant comes out and says,
we want to believe that k D will leave because
he left the Thunder before. Why wouldn't he leave for
New York Rich climbing his business partners in New York
who hasn't been Every NBA player has been wanting to

(08:22):
have their own franchise. And if you can be the
guy to fix the Knicks, you can kill it, not
just on the court, put off the court as well.
And the Eastern Conference seems like outside of the Celtics
it will remain unclaimed. I thought all of this was
dangerous speculation, and I don't love the idea that I'm
taking his brother's word for it. But right now I'm

(08:42):
taking his brother's word for it. You win a championship,
you celebrate the right way. You get these do you
guys like the rings that are like two piece to
coda rings. I don't really get that. You get see
the rings that they can kind of come off and
then there's more labeling and inscription on the inside, Like,

(09:03):
I don't really it. It feels like the world's greatest
cracker Jack box ring. That's what it feels like like
if cracker Jack boxes were sold in Dubai. This is
what would come out of him. But whatever, you win
two championships, you can put on a championship belt buckle
on your finger if you want. Instead of discussing that

(09:26):
or the the troll job by the NBA putting Russell Westbrook,
having to have Russell Westbrook watch Kevin Durant get his
second ring since leaving. That's an NBA troll job of
epic proportions. That's your wife leaving you and you going

(09:48):
to not just watch the web not just to the wedding,
but the consummation of the marriage. Wait, what Russell's gotta
sit there while they all have their rings. But instead
of talking about that, the brother tweets uh. The brother
puts a message on Kevin Duran Durant's Instagram page that

(10:10):
leads all of us to believe that the truth is
k D is just gonna play eighty one more and
playoffs and get up on out of there. Alright, more
on that to come. We got some great baseball to
discuss this hour. Matt Holliday will join us into the
hour Nick Swisher up next. He's a World Series champion.
I want to ask him about Manny Machado, essentially saying
he's Randy Moss. He runs when he wants to run.

(10:34):
That's up coming next. Be sure to catch live editions

(10:54):
Fox Sports Radio bringing Baseball. Last night, Red Sox going
to Houston and uh, the final score I think looks
worse than what actually took place, but ends up being
eight to two. They got to oh Soona for five
in the top of the eighth inning, including a Jackie
Bradley Jr. Grand Slam after a burrow of Sooner hit

(11:17):
two other Red Sox so that ends up being eight
to two. And then in the NLCS the Dodgers survive
after thirteen innings they beat the Brewers two to one.
Let's welcome in Nick Swisher. You see him MLB on
Fox analyst, a World Series champ. Let's begin with the
Dodgers and Mannie Machado. It's not necessarily even what he

(11:38):
did at first base or the hit which allowed him
to score the game winning run. It's what he said
to Ken Rosenthal. Uh, here's the guy who's a free agent,
and he's like, yeah, not a big hustle guy. How's that?
How's that? How's that go over in a Major League
baseball clubhouse? What's up? Yeah? You know, I of the

(12:00):
same things you saw. Um, you know, obviously that's not
my style. But then again, I can kind of compare
him to a player that I played with and I
know really well. Uh, and and his name is Robinson
to know, And sometimes when you are at that level
and you play the game at such a high level,
sometimes it looks easier than one should think it is. So, UM,

(12:24):
I don't know. I feel like Manny Machado is a
great player. Uh. There's probably gonna be a lot of
people that agree with some of the things he does,
and there's gonna be people that disagree with some of
the things he does. So I think, hey, man, because
you believe I didn't do it, y'all, if you saw
me last night. I was playing tennis, right. Uh No,
I think, um, just in general, man, Manny brings a

(12:45):
lot of things to the table, and just like a
lot of great athletes and superstar athletes, there comes a
price to pay with that and things come along with
him as well as his unbelievable play. And for me,
I think the the play on the field definitely surpasses
all that other stuff. Hey, sus Aguilar, was that his
fault or was that Machado when Aguilar leaves his foot

(13:07):
on the bag and then Machado clips him on the
field side of the bag when he's out at first? Yeah,
you saw that. Yeah, that was crazy, right. Um. I
mean watching it in slow mo, it looked bad, right,
I mean it looked like there was a little bit
of intention behind it. I don't know if that was
the case. Um. I know in his press conference that

(13:28):
he said that you know he comes to play, you know,
he played the game, and you know he's there for
his teammates. And I don't know, Man, I think him
and he Sue is kind of made up. But I
think in the moment, it definitely looked like in my
mind something that might have happened back in high school.
I mean happened to me a few times in high school,
where you know there might be an intention behind it,

(13:50):
but hopefully at this level, just the frustration, uh might
have gotten to him a little bit, might have gotten
a hoo to Aguilar, or might have gotten the machado,
might have gotten to Machado, right, I mean, you know
he it was, it was, it was, it was. It
was a smooth jog down the line and me being
the first basement, I know, there's plenty of room on
the back side of that bag for you to do
what you need to do. Of baseball's hit to the

(14:13):
shortstop in the big leagues are gonna get caught right
and you're out. So I just didn't see what the
reasonings for that was. All right, So how did the
Brewers come back from this? That their bullpen was fantastic?
Fantastic but has to be taxed saying can be said
for the Dodgers. But the Dodgers got the win, so

(14:34):
they have the series lead. It feels like today is
is gonna be uh an arduous task for the Brewers
because it went thirteen innings. Yeah, well, there's no doubt
about it. And I think for myself, I got the
chance to talk to Justin Turner earlier today and he said,
its exhausting as last night was. We won the game,

(14:54):
and if you lose a game like that, you know
how exhausting that really can be. I think the Dodgers
are at all. They have the face of the franchise
on the mountains tonight, Clayton Kershaw may ready to do
his thing. I mean, they can take a commanding lead
of the series obviously. I think, what is it like
percent of the time, whoever wins Game five goes on
to win the series. So I think for meal Man,

(15:16):
as a fan, bro, I love all this. I love
all the trauma, I love all the excitement. I want
to see this sort of stuff because there's a fan.
This gives me things to read about, This gives me
things to think about. And at the end of the day, man,
that's what we want to do. Man, we want great baseball,
we want exciting baseball, and I think we're getting that
right now. Uh, we got exciting baseball from the Red Sox.
Oh Man, Joe Smith comes in and gives up a

(15:37):
home run that dramatically changed that game, and then Roberto
as sooner just imploded before our eyes. Can the Astros
get it back going in the right direction? Oh yeah,
no doubt about it. Man. You know, if they've got
Charlie Morton on the mount tonight, he hasn't pitched in
a couple of weeks, it's gonna be interesting to see
how his heel on the baseball is. If he has
fastball location, man, he's gonna have a good start for them.

(15:59):
But also I feel of like, um, you know, it's
in Houston, and for them to go through what they
went through yesterday and to lose, you know, the first
game at home like they did, Uh, that's tough, man.
So I think for them, I think they have the
talent to do it. I don't think they have any
weaknesses when it comes to their rotation, the back end
of the bullpen. On paper, they look amazing, But at

(16:21):
the end of the day, man, you gotta play the game.
And the one cool thing that I'm noticing about these playoffs, man,
is we're not necessarily talking about the stars of the
game for what they're doing on the field. We're talking
about the role guys. The Steve Pierces of the world,
the Jbj's of the world. Uh, the guys that are
stepping up in the spotlight man and getting the job done.
And I think that's awesome for the game and obviously

(16:41):
awesome for those guys as well. I agree with you
that it's awesome for for because that it's what ultimately
a team is about. But there's this weird thing going
on in baseball right between, you know, when when you
have starters going to three four innings and then you
know star players. You know, I'm obviously made the shadows
the star player, but not all star players, you know,

(17:02):
staying in the game as you're you know, platooning guys,
And there's so much correct that, Like, look, the ensemble
cast is incredible for a team, but I think it
makes it harder for fans, and I think it's gonna
change players values on the open market because you're sitting
there going like, well, I would have spend two on
a million dollars three and a million dollars on Bryce
Harper when I'm gonna call with platoon guys for a

(17:24):
quarter of the price, Yeah, I want to. I I
totally agree with you on that, and that brings up
a great point. I think at the end of this postseason.
This year, we're gonna see one or two things happen.
We are going to notice the importance of the starter
in baseball a k a. The trustin Ferlanders or more
be we are going to shay, you know what, we

(17:44):
don't need those starters anymore. We need a bunch of
flame throwing to three inning guys and and and we're
gonna compete. I also feel like the one cool thing
about these playoffs is as well, that the game is evolving.
And what we're also noticing is there's different styles of
baseball to compete at the highest level. Right. I feel

(18:04):
like the Milwaukee Brewers of the team that everybody thought
shouldn't have been there, right, And I know they were
an offensive juggernaut for sure, But to see the way
they play the game and to see the way they
use their pitching, that's a different strategy. It's never been
done before. So I feel like this is kind of
a Steph Curry moment in baseball where the importance of
something or someone could either thrive or diminish. Yeah. No, Look,

(18:26):
last year when the Astros won, Everybody's like, hey, guess
what tanking works. Astros tanked. Look at all the talent
they have. Now people are gonna look and say, well,
the Brewers they go with openers and not starters. That worked,
and it's becomes a copycat league totally. Bro, It's like
it's it's it's like an aha moment. And I think
the analytic guys are probably laughing at this right now

(18:48):
because they're like, you guys are just realizing this. But
I think that's what's cool about the game. And I
think that's what's cool about life in generals, and things
are always evolving, things are always changing, people are always
looking for Ben. And what's great about the game of
baseball is the numbers rule. And obviously, if you're a
manager and you have a percentage of an advantage and
you're the strength of your team is in your bullpen,

(19:10):
I'm gonna either win that series or lose that series
with my best players. Nick Swisher World Series Champ MLB
on Fox Analysts can't wait to catch up with you again,
very very soon. Thanks for being our guest on You
Got It Home anytime? Hey wait, wait, switch Twitsch you
play tennis? Yeah? Man, By the way, Ben up down

(19:32):
just got a new racket today. What what kind of
like this is? Honestly, I played a little tennis. What
kind of racket did you go? Babbleiz Wilson. That was
my first, my buddy first started playing. Right, So I
got a bab loot on Amazon right just to say, like,
you know what, let's get it as soon as possible.
Now I'm actually at the racket doctor right now, and

(19:52):
I'm getting myself up. Roger Federer, Matt Black, red string, nasty,
Johnny bro that's gonna get the job jumped. Can't wait.
We gotta play something. That's Nick Swisher, Thanks, thanks Nick
Swisher joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. I just

I played doubles, doubles and not tennis. You gotta play singles.
You gotta play singles. Let's get you to Dan Buyer,
find out what else is going on Dan. When he
got Doug, We've got a double dose of baseball coming

(20:36):
up on Fox Sports One at the top of the hour.
It's coverage of Game five of the NLCS between the
Brewers and Dodgers. Of course, the series is tied up
at two apiece. Brewers activiated pictures Aunt Davies and took
Geo Gonzalos off the NLCS roster because of a high
ankle sprain suffered last night. Wade Miley goes up against
Clayton Kershaw for a spitch just after five o'clock Eastern,

(20:56):
now the first bitch between the Astros and Red Sox
from Houston, as Eddie already nine Eastern time tonight in
Game four, the Alcs on TBS report TBS that is
Rick Porcello throws for Boston. Charlie Morton on the mond
for the Astros. Red Sox up to one in the
best of seven series, and the ESPN reports as NFL
owners have held private conversations on the viability of the

(21:18):
Chargers in Los Angeles, original revenue goals for the Chargers
in the new stadium have been reduced from four hundred
million dollars to one hundred and fifty million dollars. As
the report states, the team has had a struggle selling PSLs.
The Dolphins was star brock Oswaller at quarterback for the
second straight weeks. They take on the Lions in Week seven.
Ryan Tannehill still out with that injury. The Bills will

(21:39):
start Derek Anderson at quarterback in Week seven against the Colts.
He was signed a little over a week ago, and
we'll start in place of the injured rookie Josh Allen
and also the ineffective Nathan Peterman. And in the NBA,
Denver Nuggets have given head coach Michael malonea contract extension.
Timberwolves are planning to play Jimmy Butler and tonight's opener

(22:21):
How about that? How about Dan, don't go anywhere? We're
getting a second. By the way, how bad, how big
a disaster is that Chargers thing? You almost think they
should have done what the Ravens did when the Ravens moved.
When when the Ravens started back up right in Baltimore
which is new name, Um, you know they couldn't hurt Yeah,

(22:43):
almost like, look, there's a there's a bunch of I
thought they should have played Orange County. You couldn't because
of how Anaheim Stadium was originally configured. Um well, how
since it's been been refigured since I think it was
when they redid it, and of before that, that's when
the Rams it had it was a bigger stadiums the

(23:03):
Rams played there. But I mean this is just you're
in l A. I know there's an increase in value
in the franchise, but every game is a road game.
They're actually a really good team. Now it's still very
early on and I don't think it's freak out moment
just yet. But the Rams are popular. The Raiders are

(23:24):
still more popular. I don't know. I I do think
it's one of those call me back in two more years,
you know, when they get to the new stadium. But
if you don't sell those PSL's like wow, crazy crazy stuff.
Let's get to a game. This is game time on

the Doug Gottlieb Show. Or up off your high interest

although is made by webank member f d i C
Equal Housing lender Dahn. When he got the game today,
Doug is real news. Fake news? Alright, real news are

(24:08):
fake news, Doug. After being the hero last night, the
Dodgers are giving Cody Bellinger arrest is he won't start
in today's game five. Not only are they starting him,
they're having him back leadoff, and he's gonna play center
field last night, not only with the game winning hit,
but that heck of a catch in the tenth inning
last night to help the Dodgers get that game four win.
Pretty amazing on how uh season can like turn around?

(24:32):
Right here? Cody Bellinger has been way up and way
down and been in the doghouse this year, but you
get the game winning hit and suddenly they want to
erect a statue of you out in front of Dodger Stadium.
Real news are fake news, Doug. Just in time for
the new NBA season, Big Baller Brand has released a
new Zoe too that will be priced at one thousand dollars.

(24:53):
You are, yeah, the shoe company or the company if
you will, actually came out with a cheaper shoe than
the one that was pribaced at four dred. The new
pair of Zoe two's cost about two hundred bucks if
you want. Yeah, they're ugly, They're they're ugly, and they're
they're uglier than a Lonzo's jump shot. And remember he

(25:13):
didn't wear them all the time last year because he
had trouble with how they felt on his feet. Yes,
uh rhyme music. So I think I already know the
answer to this. But what is the price where you
would spend your own money to purchase them? Uh? Because
two hundred is obviously still way too high. But I

(25:34):
mean if if they were like twenty dollars. They are
so ugly, ugly, they look like they got to sneak
up on a glass of water. The Marlins are apparently
going to get new uniforms at a new logo next year.
But yeah, if you I saw the Marlins uniform in
the Miami Airport and I was like, those are the
ugliest things I've ever seen in my life. This show

(25:55):
has all this shoe has all of those colors and more.
It seems like it's it's not a good look. I
am not a fan. I guess the question is how
much would I have to pay you to where the
problem with the Zoe two's are Aren't they all like
all black? The picture that they that they are showing
for the new ones are black with blue, yellow, orange, red,

(26:18):
and white. Yeah. So I mean if you went to
an outlet mall and you saw that in the clearance section,
you'd be like, all right, I can I can see
why these are the tim Tim Hardaway used to have
shoes like that. They were just but they had a
cool commercial that went with them. Oh I see him.

(26:38):
Well those are not like okay, I'm with you. The
ones that are okay, So they have orange backs, they
have yellow like a buckskin yellow on the side right,
and then they have orange like straps across the front.
Then they have red fronts, red red and yellow underneath,
and then some blue on them as well. Then orange

(26:59):
laces that this Yeah, you can only play for the
Oklahoma City Thunder in these shoes. That's that's the only team.
I guess that the ideas they pop right because now
they changed the shoe color rule in the NBA where
you can have any color you want, but you didn't
have to put them all on one shoe. Hey, where's purple?

(27:21):
On this question? Is LaVar Ball color blind? Right? Oh? Man?
Not with colors? They are? What's how much when I spend?
I'd spends. They look thick, they look like they'd be

(27:41):
good kids shoes. It looked like they could take a beating.
That's the big thing with my son is he just
he just trash his shoes because he plays sports outside
in him anyway, Yeah, they're there. I wouldn't pay a
dime for him. I would rather cut the grass in
those real news are fake news. Doug Sons guard Devin
Booker at a setback following surgery and could be out
until mid November. No, he's actually gonna be back two

(28:04):
weeks early. He's gonna play tonight against the Dallas Mavericks.
Had a procedure done on one of the joints on
his hand in mid September. Devin Booker gonna make his
season debut tonight in the season opener with no gentle manager.
We'll see how that goes. Real news are fake news, Doug.
The late Aaron Hernandez kept referring the Patriots head coach
Bill Belichick as daddy during a practice once they're real

(28:29):
and they're spectacular. Ye. This Boston Globe piece is just
more details. As part of this piece, Hernandez was apparently
slacking during a walkthrough practice once, wearing flip flops and
calling Belichick daddy. While Hernandez was laughing and I guess
running around and fooling around, Tom Brady yelled at him, saying,
shut the bleep up, get the bleep out of here.

(28:50):
End quote. Um he sounds he sounded balanced that that
was not the most alarming thing. And you know, no,
you want to share the most your most alarming thing.
You saw the article? Um no, no, yeah, that's one
of those. That's one of those. You should read it.
I don't really want to share with you. And there's
like a new piece coming out each like day of

(29:11):
another another chapter in in his his life, sticking with
the Patriots. Real news are fake news. In preparation for
the Bears, this week Patriots said, go to Bill Belichick
called Khalil Mack the next Lawrence Taylor. You are fake. Yeah,
this is actually what Bill Belichick said earlier today. You've
seen a lot of good pass rushers and careers darting
with Lawrence Taylor. Right, she's just smack sort of rank

(29:32):
up there with one of the federals. Seen the we're
talking about Lawrence Taylor. Now, yeah, I'm not putting anybody
Lawrence Taylor's class. So he put everybody down a little
that that's that's with a lot of respect, a lot
of good players. Now, but what about Lawrence Taylor. Yeah,
I mean he called he called Lawrence Taylor with the
New York Giants. He's like, yeah, who whoa, whoa, whoa.

(30:00):
So my favorite thing though about clear Maqua is though
that I went to I did that Dolphins game. He
was literally the first guy on the field. And you
know a lot of guys that are superstars take the
second bus. He took the first bus. It may have
worn him out. I think you might have spent too
much time in the heat. Though. It was hot out
there in the field, especially where the Bears are on
the sun side of the stadium since they've covered the seats.

(30:23):
The sun peeked through in the second half only on
the visitors side of the stadium. Real news are fake news, Doug,
that the NFL altered their rules to allow currents NFL
owners to own other sports franchises in different markets a
spectacular yeah. There. This would allow, say, in the example
that has been used so much as Steve Ballmer maybe

(30:46):
being somewhat interested in buying the Seahawks, he'd also be
able to still own the l A Clippers. Previously that
was not allowed. You couldn't own another sports franchise in
a city where there was an NFL franchise. But that
rule is now out the window. And that's and this also,
you know, allows Josh Cronkie to It didn't have to
be city. I thought you just couldn't own another pro
sports franchise if you're you would not with the The

(31:09):
Denverse situation was they had to give up the Avalanche
um in Nuggets because of the Broncos being in town.
Got it. So that's why this is game time on
the Dug gott Leap Show. Alright, So, um, the Manny
Machado's quote, I do think resonates it resonates through all

(31:31):
of sports. A young superstar player says like the hustle
thing is not really my cup of tea, and he
does so on the precipice of him signing a huge
free agent contract. Matt Holiday signed a huge free agent
contracts before. What does he think about Manny's play and

He's a seven time All Star, four time Silver Slugger,

Play in the playoffs with the Rockies. He's Matt Holiday
on the Doug out Live Show here on Fox Sports Radio. UM,
I know you by now you heard what Many Machado
had to say. Major League Baseball is find him for

(32:39):
what he did at first base. But when you hear
a guy who's about to sign a huge free agent
contract saying, yeah, the whole hustle down the first base thing,
it's really really not my thing. What's your reaction. I don't.
I don't like it. I mean, I don't. I don't
like that you say that. I mean, I think the
guys that play every day and you're superstar players, I
think that there is a margin for if you hit

(33:00):
a groutine groundball to second base, if you're not going
to run a hundred percent. I don't think there's any
reason that guy can't run every time, no matter what
the situation, and particularly in the playoffs, if you can
go a hundred percent, you only you only ask to
be running, you know, four times. There's plenty of off days.
I don't, I don't, I don't like I mean, I

(33:20):
like Manny, but I don't like that. That's that's his
attitude towards hustle and then towards you know, what he's
expected of the best. You know, ultimately he's probably the
best player on every team he's going to be on,
or in the top two or three. I think as
the best player, I think you set an example for
the other guys and and you make it really hard
on a manager if if you're not going hard all
the time on what he's supposed to do when when

(33:42):
other guys aren't going hard all the time. So I
I don't like that in a lot of different ways.
All right, So what is it? Uh? What does it
due to his value? Right? Like? Does that? Does that
keep a team from wanting to be in business? I mean,
for example, did he Grigorious who they say he's not
gonna miss the game, but he is gonna have Tommy
John surgery. There's the Yankees out there, the chance of

(34:03):
him resigning with the Dodgers? Uh? What does it do
to his value? When all those things? It becomes really
hard to discipline other guys when you don't have your
own personal discipline. You're gonna be the highest paid player
on the team, you know. I don't know how much
it affects his value. I think that got people tend
to overlook things like that. When you hit three hundred

(34:24):
with forty homers or whatever, forty homers and and you're
you know, playing goldblof defense at that third base or
or or shortstop wherever he ends up playing. I think
I think there's plenty of of of teams that will
are willing to overlook that. But uh, I think I
think there's some m that probably that they probably take

(34:44):
notice of that, and they probably say, um, you know
that they don't like that. I think that's that's something
that he will have to address when he meets with teams.
Um how how you know he feel really feels about
that and and how he would handle certain situations. Um.
So I definitely think that that's that's that's a blip
on the radar for for teams that are interested in

(35:05):
signing him. Now, ultimately, will that cost him very much money?
I probably not. What about what about what happened at
first base last night? You know, I think that it
was a routine play. You had plenty of time. I
thought that his foot was too far in the middle
of the base from a first baseman standpoint, but there's
no reason to clip a first baseman or step on

(35:27):
his foot and a play that's that's not close, like
he's not running as fast as he can sort of
an all out. I got to get to first and
it was as an accident that that can happen if
a first baseman is trying to get to the base
and his foot gets too too much in the middle
of the base and the runners, you know, just trying
to do everything he can to beat out the throw.
I could see something like that happening where it was

(35:47):
an accident, but to me, that was pretty flagrant and
and pretty much you know, you don't see that I have.
In fact, I don't think I've ever seen that in
the Major League where a runner has sort of gone
out of his way to to step on a first
baseman's ankle and a play that's not close to first
you know, there wasn't even a play as a routine grounder,
So why would you do it? I don't know, I

(36:09):
don't know. I I guess he's on edge. I don't know.
You know, they called him when he tried to call
time and then the pitch was delivered and the and
the umpire didn give him time out, and um, he's
he's been on edge. To me, it looks like he's
he's emotionally a little bit, uh, you know, out of sorts.
He's usually calm, cool and collected, but you know, he's
had he's had things happen during his career where, uh,

(36:30):
you know, he's done some things that have caused uh,
you know, some some bench clearing issues before. So uh,
it just looks to me like sometimes his emotions get
the best of him, and um, and that he seems
to be, like I said, playing on on edge a
little bit. And and uh, I don't know, maybe that
maybe he just lost his mind for a minute. That

(36:51):
can happen to us Matt Holiday joining US seven time
All Star, four time Silver Sluggers Doug Gotli show, Fox
Sports Radio. So now all of a sudden, the advantage
goes come poletely in the favor of the Dodgers because
they survived that thirteen inning affair and Minny Machadow does
come through with the game winning run after a huge
hit in thet and they turned to Clayton Kershaw, who

(37:12):
is not the Clayton Kershaw that you used to face
when you were with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he
wasn't very effective his first time out against Milwaukee. Why
is Kershaw so different? Is it just what used to
be seven is now ninety three. It's that it's simply
that simple. I think that that's a big part of it.
I think that when you when you you have to
honor mid upper nineties fastball um with high spin rate,

(37:36):
which you know, I don't know people know, but the
ball plays fast. He pitches up in the zone. He
used to be able to pound right hand hitters with
you up and end and and now you know some
of his fastballs are even down to range. Uh, you
just don't have to be quite as conscious in and play.
You know, you don't have to in your mind be

(37:57):
as ready for the high night in mid nineties fastball
that that would make you so far out in front
of his curveball and and and you know, swinging over
the top of his slider. Uh. So I I think
he's a he's a different style pitcher. It's more of
a cutter, you know, when the ball inside and and uh,
it just it looks a little bit different than it
has in the past. And that doesn't mean he can't

(38:19):
get out. Obviously, he still had a really good season.
And but I think whether you know, I don't know
why his velocity is down. I don't know if it's
it's just accumulation of of all these innings, or or
if he's you know, had a soreness or his back
or whatever it is. But um, you know, when when
the velocity comes down typically the spin comes down on
the sladder and and the curveball enough. I don't think

(38:42):
he throws enough curveballs. Uh, you know he's mostly fastball, slider,
you know, variety's But um, I don't know, I don't
know what what to me if yet, bad is not
quite as difficult as it used to be. Matt Holiday
joining us in the Doug gotlip show. Let's go over
to the other side. Um, you know a league you played,
didn't going back to last year, Red Sox taken on

(39:04):
the Astros and they got to they got to Joe Smith,
which game of lead and and then all of a sudden,
Roberto is soon a completely blew up. Um. The Red
Sox turned to Rick Porcello, who's not what he used
to be against Charlie Morton. How much does this series
change because Boston got back home field avantage last night. Yeah,

(39:24):
I mean I think it's a it's a real this
is a really I think pressure packed came for Houston tonight.
I mean, I think this is a huge game. I
mean it's it's it's gonna be. Yeah. I think that
all of a sudden, a lot of the pressure goes
back onto them, which I think experience. Obviously last year
they had they had plenty of pressure and and and
experience and playing and very intense games that that they

(39:47):
had to have. So but I do think that the
series kind of took a big shift last night. And uh,
and I think Morton, you know, he's got that experience,
and he's he's really good. I mean if he if
his his stuff, you know, I don't know how he
is physically, but when his stuff is on, he's gonna
be very difficult to hit, especially in that ballpark. Um
and and so I I think the Astros win. And

(40:09):
I had if I had to, if I had to
pet um but you know, I I these this game
right here is is huge producing. Hey I got I
got like thirty seconds. Uh. This guy called McLoughlin apparently
was sitting in the in the foetag well, and they
they're accusing him of stealing information. How valuable is information
if you can sit close to the other teams dug out?

(40:30):
You know, I don't know what he was trying to get.
I mean, everybody's trying to steal everybody's signs now, and
everybody's trying to figure out what sign they're using. When
runners are on second base to relay signs for the hitter.
I mean, there's a lot more that going on right
now than than ever before as far as I've what
I've noticed, So I think teams are trying I don't
know what they're trying to, you know, what he was

(40:50):
trying to steal, or supposedly he was seeing if they
were stealing, checking you to see if you're checking me
type of deal. But UM, I don't know. I guess
there's an advantage if you can tell the hitter what's coming,
or you know, if you're a bass runner and you
know what's fine. I don't know, Matt, Thanks so much,

Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? Do Do Do Do Do?

(41:32):
Do Do do? Dude? What games did you watch this weekend?
Because I think when you watch one game, you like
you have a different sort of and stronger opinion of
those games. It's one of the great things about Sunday
night football. We all watch that, all right, I think

(41:53):
most of us watch Monday night football, didn't you those
Sunday early games. I was I was working that the
Bears against the Dolphins, and I was keeping an eye
on Chargers versus Browns, And it's one of those things where, um, look,

(42:13):
there's there's two different sides to the Charger story. Now
they're they're trying to like, wait, wait a second, when
we have to rethink this l A thing, the l
A stadium thing, because they're struggling to sell PSLs. Don't
get it twisted. That's a very good football team talent wise.
That's gonna get better. They're playing without arguably their best
defensive player in Joey Bosa, who plays probably the most

(42:36):
important position yea Melvin Ingram on one side. When he
gets Joey Bosa back, man, it's gonna be dynamic and
then offensively, weapon after weapon after weapon. And they're playing
without Hunter Henry, who towards a c L and could
be back, could be back for the end of the
season the postseason. Tyrell Williams Star wide receiver who had

(42:57):
just a ridiculous game. Ridiculous game will join us upcoming
on the show as the Chargers go into Cleveland and
put a beat down on the Browns. To fourteen. Get
a chance to see Celtics versus Sixers last night, and
I know that Wilson Chandler is not healthy for the Sixers,

(43:21):
but it's about what I thought. And remember, Gordon Hayward
didn't look sharp, hadn't played in a year, and frankly,
Carrie Irving didn't look sharp, hadn't played in about half
of a year. And yet the Celtics were a far
better team than the Sixers. And it's it's just it's

(43:42):
fascinating to me on how there's there are other parts
to it, but the idea that that the that the
Sixers were on par with the Celtics when the Celtics
didn't have their two best players last year was laughable. Laughable.
The Celtics were that much better than the Sixers without

(44:04):
their two best players really playing in rhythm or playing
all that well last night. Just imagine how much better
they'll be when they do play in rhythm and do
play better. And oh yeah, by the way, Marquelle Folts.
I don't care how much how many videos you show
me that show me Marquelle Folts can shoot. I'm telling

(44:24):
you I had and still have within me a little
bit of what Marquel Folts has. That went when you
get the Yips shooting the basketball one offseason. The mistake
they made was not having him play in Summer League.

(44:45):
That is an absolute mistake, not having him play in
summer League, because the only way you overcome it is
through doing it in real game action. And yeah, there'll
be some games where it's a step back, but now
trying to you know, you're basically trying to do therapy

(45:06):
on the move, Like that's it's there's too many games,
it's too hard. He looked petrified to shoot the ball yesterday,
didn't he In addition to being kind of in position
in between positions, Marquel Folks losing his jump shot when
that was arguably his greatest strength coming into the NBA draft,

(45:30):
And then you know you're starting to ahead of JJ Reddick,
who's obviously a lights out shooter, Like what are we
doing here? The only way you can maybe fix the
Marquel deal is when he doesn't take a jump shot,
turns down open shot, you take him out, you take
him out. But I watched last night and I just

(45:52):
nodded my head, thinking, yeah, the Celtics should be this
much better than the Sixers. It was a close series
last year and you didn't have Kyrie and he didn't
have Gordon Hayward. They should be pronounced Lee better with
those two. And then you you watch Golden State and

(46:12):
remember Oklahoma City not healthy. Neither is Golden State, but
between Steph and Kevin Durant and they just they hit
you with a barrage of punches where even when Oklahoma
City took the lead in the second half, you never
feel like they're gonna win the game. You just don't
that type of weaponry. We're gonna catch up with Tara

(46:37):
Williams in the second Tara Williams joins us in the
Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. I want to
get to the things you're doing for tsunami relief. But
how would you how would you characterize that game you
had on Sunday? Oh, I mean, I guess it was
a real quick game, you know, pretty productive, pretty quick.
But he's glad we're able to get a win as

(46:59):
the most important thing. Yeah, but but for you, I mean,
that's the first time of your career you had two
touchdowns in a single game. I know you only caught
three balls a hundred eighteen yards, but it seemed like
a breakout, breakthrough kind of game as a as another big,
you know, big passing threat for for Philip. You don't,
you don't look at it as as a breakthrough game
in anyway. Uh No, I mean, I feel like I've

(47:22):
been pretty consistent through my career. Is nice just to
you know, get that first game with two touchdowns. I
was I was looking forward to that, but you know,
there's being another help the team and be able to
stretch the ball down the field is kind of the
main thing, and just get that on soil further teams
to see as far as being don't spread things out.
So I think it was big for us in that
in that sense. Yeah, it also look, you guys hadn't

(47:43):
gotten off to great starts always right, Um, Buffalo, you
got off to a good start, but you kind of
fell asleep in the second half. But a lot of
the other games you hadn't been off to two great starts,
and you let other teams hang around Niners, you let
hang around. How important was especially at first big Catcher
up seven to three at the time, how important was
it to put some distance between yourself and the Browns early. Yeah,

(48:05):
I think it's big, you know, just getting the momentum
going early, getting some big play and just getting that
that flow going and getting everybody kind of more upside
of uh and then just been able to finish it off,
like you said, be able to keep that lead and
keep pushing through the second halves as well. And I
mean it helps having such a running game going like
it was late and early, hitting those big shots early

(48:25):
and then just being pounded with the with the wrong
game easier. Look, Melvin is gonna get a lot of credit,
but I felt like the offensive line was just was
really dominant, I mean, really played well. And considering you've
had some injuries there, that's that's pretty surprising to some people.
What have you seen with your offensive line? Uh? Yeah,
I mean you see those You see those guys, even

(48:46):
the backups, you know, day and day out making plays
and pushing the line of screamings. So it's not surprised
to us that aren't ability to see that. And then
you get those guys like rust back healthy, and you
know that there's they're gonna come in and do just
what they have been doing. I mean, we're not surprised
at all to people to see the right game go
like it is. What's with you guys from the Pacific Northwest?
You know, planet smaller schools going unrecognized. I mean you

(49:08):
got Cooper um he who he did get drafted, but
there's been others and you're a Western Oregon guy. What
is what? What is it that's allowed some of you
guys in the pack Northwest that people don't know a
ton about him? You're undrafted free agent when you came
out of school to succeed in the NFL. I don't
know what it is. I mean, I guess you know
we got talent up there. I think it's more known

(49:29):
for basketball, but but you've got a lot of athletes
up there, and then you know, from my case, I mean,
he's going undrafted, no good, have a little chip on
our shoulder and just wanting to be able to prove
myself at every game every day. It just makes it
easier for me in that says so, I mean, I
know we got the talent up to he's just getting
guys who notice it too. What is it really like
your first year you spend in the practice squad? What's

(49:49):
that existence? Like? Oh, it's tough, man, it's really you
won't be out there playing. He feels like you can play.
I'm just waiting for that opportunity, you know. I mean
it's definitely tough going from and all through high school,
all through college and then happen to sit out. I
mean it's tough, but I mean it help me in
the long run, getting get to go against guys like
bread of Flowers and just help me a lot. Okay, So,

(50:10):
so like you you don't dress on game days, you're
in sweats over there on the sideline, But like, what
what's your exist? What do you do on game days?
Everybody else is coming in, you know, getting spat it up,
getting ready to go. What would you do when you
were on practice squad and and all those guys you
compete against all week are actually playing and you're not.
Uh shoot, I mean if you go out there early,

(50:32):
get some balls with the backup quarterbacks maybe and just
run some rouse, get a little workout in them. But
then after that, you know, you just showing. He just
kind of the cheering everybody on at that point and
trying to help people up whatever they they need, you know,
getting the water or something here and there. But you
really just you just kind of a fan at that
point is on the sideline watching, didn't you? I remember?
I feel like it was your first full year playing?

(50:54):
Was it? Was it a touch didn't you catch a touchdown?
Like your first reception of the year against the Broncos,
like in your first full year that second year in
you in the league. It was still my first year.
Was the last game of my rookie teason. It was
my first catch with I went for eight touchdown against
the Broncos. You know there's some of my rookie You
though that that's like, that's like a movie. You realize that,
right Tyrrell Williams join against me l A Chargers right

(51:15):
to go from undrafted practice squad, you finally get a jersey,
you play your first catches against the Denver Broncos and
a dr touchdown reception like that right there, cut fade
to black, roll the credits. That's a movie, isn't it.
It was crazy? It was definitely crazy. I mean it
was a play we drew up on the sideline round
them too, So it was like, it's kind of when

(51:36):
they said it was coming to me, here we go.
So we got out on the field and threw it
up and there was nobody around and I was able
to take you something. It was. It was awesome to
the dream come tr for sure. How good is this team?
Really good? You know? I think we got an opportunity to,
you know, the position we're in right now, hopefully going
to London, get another way and beyond, nice little wing
streak into the bye week and then after that, just

(51:58):
keep pushing and keep the moment I going, like we've
gotten getting to the playoffs things from there. You know,
I didn't think it happened. So I think we've got
a really good chance. Have you ever been to London before?
I haven't. Yeah, but you guys are. It's just like
serious business trip, right, aren't you Guys? Like leaving Thursday night,
you get there Friday morning, you play Sunday and then
you get home. Like I kind of feel like this

(52:20):
is gonna be one of those It's almost like a
layover where people say they went to a city, Like
you didn't go to a city. You were in a layover.
You know, you just had connecting flights. That's almost gonna
be your trip to London in the Yeah, I don't know.
I doubt we'll have a lot of times to you know,
check out the city. Hopefully we get a little bit
of time, you know, just to be able to go
see some stuff. But I mean it's definitely a business
trip in the not real quick. And then we're back
out to California and by shoot, almost Monday morning, so

(52:43):
it's gonna be real fast. I'm guessing though the weather
is gonna be a lot like Turner Oregan. What is
you're from? Turner Oregan? Where is Turner Organ? Uh? Shoot,
I don't even know I describe because I could say Salem,
you know where Salem is at? I guess Portland'll be
the biggest is like hour outside of Portland, south of Portland,
so not a lot of people would know where that's at. Yeah,
but it's like, uh with two less than two thousand people,

(53:05):
Oh yeah, for sure, for sure? Stop like maybe less
than a thousand. No stoplight? No stoplight? Where? Where? Where? Like?
Where do you go? Is there anywhere to go eat
in town? Uh? No, I mean unless you want to
go to a little hot market at the grocery store.
That'll probably be your best day. So what do you do?
Like like like, were you like Fisher? We like, did

(53:27):
you fish? Did you hike? Like I'm just thinking all
things Oregon. Paint the visual of what it was like
for Tyrell Williams growing up in Turner, Oregon going to
Cascade High School? Like what would you do? You really
didn't do a lot, you know whatever, to my friend's
house all my friends didn't serious, I never did any
of that. I went with him on the time, was
in the hockey. But it was kind of a different

(53:48):
experience for me, So I didn't I didn't shooting, no
guns or anything like that. I kind of just tang along.
But I mean I really just hung out of friends,
watch movies. Yeah, I mean, it's raining, is cold. Ain't
a lot of a lot too about their So you
just really just in the house, homebodies, favorite movie, favorite movie. Well,

awesome if you could. You know, I know he's progressing well, so, um,
if we get him back, it would be amazing. But
you know, the main thing, obviously, it's just saying to
be a hun so healthy and in that and and
make sure that he's good for the rest of his career.
But he said they don't want obviously heard anything, But
I mean, if we get him back, it would be

two catches? The two touchdown catches? He made freaky town
at six ft four, big play wide receiver, just one
of a litany of players that Philip Rivers has to Uh,
there's actually Philip Rivers has more children than there are
people in his hometown. I don't know if that's actually
the math, but it sure feels that way. I come

(57:50):
about the current state of the l A Raiders. I'll
say this, We're not tanking anything. You know. I hear
the hatred out there are some of the rumors that
were tanking it to get a first round pick or
a higher pick. We're not getting up at four o'clock
in the morning to tank it. Ain't nobody tanking it.
And I don't know who wrote that, who said that,
who thinks that? But ain't the case here. You know,
We're going to continue to work hard, continue to build

(58:10):
our team. And um that was that was part of
the message. Yeah, it's part of the message we just
actually suck. We're not trying to suck, Like yeah, like people,
we like John Gruden so much that we're willing to
we're willing to be like no, you know what they
he wanted to be bad. No, no, no, we know

(58:31):
John John John. There's no way Jon Grudenstein could be
this bad. He wants to be this bad. Like, no,
we're actually trying to be good, Like, oh, really, because
you're doing a terrible job at it. If you're trying
to be bad, you're doing awesome. You're trying to be good.
You're doing bad because your team is not good and

(58:53):
your team appears to be getting worse. Right, but we
do know this about tank club. What's the first rule
of tank club? The first rule of tank club? Right, music,
don't talk about tank club? What's the second rule of
tank club? Do not talk about tank club? Thank you

(59:14):
very much? All Right, Mark Cuban's like, yeah, sure, we're
trying to lose games all of a sudden. Fine, I
don't believe. And this is a lot like Cuban or
a lot like the Memphis Grizzlies last year. I don't
believe that was his primary objective, that wasn't his plan.

(59:34):
A plan A was I'm coming. I'm gonna do my
Chuckie faces and bring in some veteran guys day and
we're gonna survive. And you never know, Broncos stink man
Joseph's gonna get fired. Kansas City has got a young quarterback.
We'll just kind of survive. The Chargers of the Chargers,
they'll they'll find a way to kick a field goal

(59:56):
to the wrong end zone and maybe well just sneak
in the playoffs and then long term will fix things. Yeah,
that wasn't at all what took place. Here's former gentlemanager
Michael Lombardi on the show Monday in regards to the Raiders.
But I think a lot of what his decision came
down to decide the fact that he got a hundred

(01:00:17):
million for ten years was the fact that he thought
he had a legitimate franchise quarterback and Derek Carr and
I think after being in the organization for nine months
or ten months, I think that realization is different now,
and I think that he's got to sit there and
look at, really, what does he have. Here's where the
key part comes in. You can talk all you want
about the Raiders rebuilding. But when you have a franchise quarterback,

(01:00:41):
you never rebuild, you repair. And they're talking rebuilding, which
he tells you all you need to know. So the
idea is this. He came in thinking, like Derek car
he's a football player, right like Derek Carr. That's what
he came in believing, I can build around Derek Carr,

(01:01:01):
and we're gonna have to build an entire defense, not
just Khalil Mack, all the other pieces, all the other
holes that that's missing, We're going to find a way
to fix. But what what he found was what I've said,
which is Derek Carr isn't that good. He's just not.

(01:01:24):
He has not been good enough to get it done.
And so, just like the Mavericks last year when they
started to have injuries, they went to tank club. Just
like the Memphis Grizzlies when Mike Conley got hurt, they
went to tank club. Hey, we're not We're not coming
in over in the morning to try and tank. No,

(01:01:48):
you're trying to get some of your younger parts better.
But it ain't exactly killing you that you're losing games.
It's killing you that people are talking bad about you
not that you're losing games, right. The thing about tanking
is the players aren't trying to lose. You just you
just play younger players, and you can't win with younger players.

(01:02:12):
Step one of tanking was get getting rid of Khalil Mack.
Two first round picks over the next two years. That's
what they'll have to have their pick, which appears to
be a good one. The Bears picks not as good
as of now as they would have thought, and and
they will have two picks the following year. So that's

(01:02:32):
step one. Plus they have salary cap, which they spent
a bunch this year, but a lot of short term
veteran deals because they want to put themselves in the
market as he gets a chance to check out the
business for a year, kick the tires. Remember he's got
a ten year contract. I mean, like they don't have

(01:02:56):
the money to fire them early, but even they did, like, Okay,
he's doing the trust the process thing. John Gridden has
been laying out watching other people doing in the NFL,
but he's also been watching what happened in Philadelphia, will
that happened in Houston and baseball and thinking the Jets
they were taking last year, and they did a terrible

(01:03:18):
job of it and won five games. Had to trade up.
What do we do a great job of it? We
do such a good job that no one actually knows
we're taking and claim we're not taking. Doug Gotler Show,
Fox Sports Tradio, brought to you by Discover Card. We
treat you like you treat you great. Costell will join
us in moments from NFL films. Let's check in with

(01:03:40):
Dan by What he got? Damn who got a lot?
From Major League Baseball. There's two games today, a Game
five between the Brewers and Dodgers on Fox Sports One
that starts just after the top of the hour. It's
Wade Miley against Clayton Kershaw. Series is tied up at
to a piece, of course. The Dodgers got game four
last night. One of the highlights, if you will, from
last night's game was Any Machado kicking the foot of

(01:04:01):
Jesus Regular while he ran the first baseball. Machado has
been fined by Major League Baseball, but was not suspended
for his actions with Regular last night. This according to
Ken Rosenthal, Brewers and Dodgers tied up at two again.
Wade Miley against Clayton Kershaw. You'll see it on Fox
Sports one now Tonight, Houston, the Astros try to even
the score with the Red Sox. Boston's up to one
in the ALCS. With Game four starting at eight thirty

(01:04:24):
nine Eastern time, Rick Porcello goes up against Charlie Morton.
Astros already gotta win today because, following an investigation, Major
League Baseball found that the Astros were not stealing signs
of opposing teams during this year's playoffs. The finding saying
Astro's employee was positioned to monitor the opposing team make
sure they weren't violent. We just want to make sure

(01:04:44):
you weren't stealing signed sign I was sleeping with your
wife so she wouldn't sleep with other people. Yeah, don't
worry about a dean. Everything's good here, Major League Baseball instructed. Yeah,
and I'm the Queen of England. All teams now need
to refrain from those actions of monitoring other teams. But

(01:05:06):
consider this case closed. Yes, that that was a thorough
investigation which lasted all of about fifteen hours. The uh,
the on the field stuff again tonight in the ALCS
eight thirty nine Eastern time. Some NFL news. The Dolphins
are gonna start brock Oswilder at quarterback for the second
straight week as they take on the Lions. Ryan Tannehills
got that shoulder injury. The Bills will start Derek Anderson

(01:05:28):
at quarterback in Week seven against the Colts, while the
Rams are ruling out Cooper Cup for their matchup against
the Niners this Sunday because of his sprained mc l
A bunch of teams opening their NBA seasons to night,
including the Minnesota Timberwolves. Doug Jimmy Butler in the plans
to play tonight against the San Antonio Spurs. A meeting
with ownership says, hey, we'll still try to trade you.

(01:05:49):
You just gotta play and play a hundred percent. So
Jimmy Butler expected to be on the court and playing
for the Wolves tonight against San Antonio. M that will
be very uncomfortable at all, right, No, oh, not at
all right, makes the game winning shot runs off the court.
You need me to win. You need me. You can't
win without me. Every time they take him out of

(01:06:12):
the game, that happens, That won't. That won't be uncomfortable
at all against the Spurs, who they lost their top
two point guards. That seems I know they do have
Patty Mills. By the way, make sure you download the
All Ball Podcast. We'll talk to Potty Mills College coach
Randy Bennett, one of our guests on the All Ball Podcast,
which drops tomorrow. It's on the Herd Podcast network. Al Right,

(01:06:36):
here's what again. Here's what former general manager and a
guy who worked with John Gruden last time around with
the Raiders, had to say about what Gruden inherited. But
I think a lot of what his decision came down to,
decides the fact that they got a hundred million for
ten years, was the fact that he thought he got
a legitimate franchise quarterback. And Derek Carr and I think

(01:06:58):
after being in the organization for nine months or ten months,
I think that realization is different now and I think
that he's got to sit there and look at, really,
what does he have. Here's where the key part comes in.
You can talk all you want about the Raiders rebuilding,
but when you have a franchise quarterback, you never rebuild,
you repair. And they're talking to rebuilding, which he tells

(01:07:19):
you all you need to know. M hm hm. Let's
get to great costal from the NFL NFL Films, He
joins us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, do you
agree with Michael Lombardi's assessment that John Gruden thought he
was taking over franchise that a franchise quarterback. Instead, they
have a quarterback that runs the franchise but is expendable

(01:07:41):
at the end of this year. My guess is that
John Gruden thinks that whether that's true is interesting because
I think, Doug, if you look at John's history, Uh,
many of the quarterbacks he had, I think pretty much
all of them were veteran quarterbacks who had been around
the block a few times. Uh. Some would argue if
you look at his career year that he's never really
developed a young quarterback, And say what you want about

(01:08:04):
Derek Carr, he's still a young quarterback. Just because he
had that great year a few years ago, does not
mean that he's a veteran, a grizzled veteran who's been
around for a long time. So I think there's two
sides to that. But my guess is that what Miche
Lombardi said is probably true within within Jon Gruden's mind. Yeah,
but I'm I'm I'm asking you based upon I think

(01:08:24):
he's a franchise quarterback. Franchisees is a relative term. Um,
let me ask you a question. Is Matt Ryan a
franchise quarterback? Uh? I think a lot of people would
probably believe that Derek Carr could be that kind of
player based on what he did earlier in his career
and what his development looked like. Uh So, you know,

(01:08:48):
I think you have to be with him every day.
I think this particular year, I think the offense has
has struggled, and there's a lot of throws under five
yards from the line of scrimmage, under ten yards from
the line the scrimmage. I think Derek Carr is is
a guy with a strong arm who likes to snap
it off. And it could be a case too of
an offense and a quarterback that don't necessarily go together.

(01:09:10):
What about Deshaun Watson. I think many people were convinced
that he could he could break the mold on quarterbacks
that could run and that could develop into being pocket passers.
Last year, they ran more of a kind of collegian
style offense. Uh. It's been hit or missed so far
this year. When you watch the Shawn Watson, the Houston
Texans on film. What do you see? I think I

(01:09:32):
see what I would expect to see. A guy who's starting,
who started eleven or twelve games and therefore has significant
inconsistencies to his game. He must continue to get quicker
with his ability to eliminate what's not there and isolate
what is there. There's far too many snaps in which
he creates his own pressure by staying too long on
what's not there. And then there's also too many snaps

(01:09:54):
in which he creates his own pressure by leaving the
pocket too early. So there's see the problem with all
these guys who run, Doug, is that that removes the
structure from your offense. And it's very and and these
are great highlight plays, but it's very difficult to build
an offense a consistent task game on a week to
week basis with plays that are outside of structure. It

(01:10:16):
makes your offensive line look worse. They don't know where
your quarterback is, so it's it's it's very difficult. They're
exciting place to watch, but you can't live like that,
no question about it. Doug Gottlib Show Fox Sports Ready.
That's the voice of Greg co Sell from NFL films.
What's what's your take on Baker Mayfield who struggled against

(01:10:37):
the pretty game Chargers team that had seemingly had a
very good game plan kind of building a wall in
front of him where he struggled to see downfield. Yeah,
Baker struggled this week. He played against the defense and
with the Chargers. That for those who remember Gus Bradley,
who's their DC now when he was in Seattle, it's
not your grandfather's Gus Bradley. There were a lot of
multiple front looks. There were a ton of what we

(01:10:59):
call sub packages. He played with five defensive back, six
defensive back, seven defensive backs, and he changed up the looks.
And I thought that Baker Mayfield and this game was
not as decisive because of that. He was not particularly
quick with what he saw, um, and that results at
times in both poor decision making and kind of a

(01:11:19):
And this might sound contradictory, but I think you, as
a former point guard, will probably understand this kind of
a mix of both impatience and hesitation at the same time.
No got got it, Um, I completely understand exactly what
your evl Is stug Got show on Fox Sports. RAO.
Can you figure out the Panthers. I mean, I can't.
I have. If I watch a game and then I

(01:11:40):
watched the next week's game, it's like I'm watching a
different football team. Well you know. And I think that
comes back again to uh not not because I don't
want people to take this incorrectly, but I think Cam
Newton has always been a quarterback that as a passer
has been somewhat erratic, somewhat of a week to week proposition.
I think north Turner has probably recognized that now that

(01:12:04):
he's been there for quite some time, and therefore he's
incorporating and integrating more of all those multiple run game
dimensions that the previous staff used, because I think that
ultimately plays to Cam newton strength. He's certainly capable of
wow throws and you can see them any given week, Doug,
as you well know. I mean, he's a physical freak.
He can make throws that are you know, three or

(01:12:25):
four people can make in the league. But there's just
an inconsistency to his passing. He tends to be scattershot.
He at times tends to miss throws that are there,
and that that's tough for the worst thing, and you'll
appreciate this. The worst thing for a coach is unpredictability
on a week to week basis. I mean it's for
any for any employer, right, any employer when you're when

(01:12:49):
you're unpredictable, I need to know where you know it's
it's it's hard to forget about football players. This is
hard for any employer to have an employee he was unpredictable.
Greg Cosl joining us on the doug Out Show. Why
the massive breakdown with the Tennessee Titans offensive line. Yeah,
they really had a hard time. And I think they've
they struggled on and off this season. Um, they they

(01:13:10):
played a team with the Ravens that is really multiple
with their fronts. Shows blitz from one side, then drops
out and comes from the other side. And I thought
the Titans had a difficult time identifying pressures. And then
what made it even worse is when they did a
good job with the identification and had blocked up, then
they would lose some one on one battles and that

(01:13:31):
just makes it worse. That makes it look really bad.
So they just had a really difficult week. Uh in
this game, and I think right now they can't run
the ball and that's really causing problems. Uh, there's there's
absolutely no balance to their offense. It's putting too much
pressure on Marcus Mariota, who is still developing in a
brand new system. He's now with his third system in

(01:13:53):
four years. Dog, that's hard, you know, for those who
really like Mariota, that's that's a difficult thing. Three systems
in four years. Um. I'm I mean, I'm totally intrigued
by your take on the Giants. Everybody wants to lay
blame of the feet of Eli Manning, and I think
that's fair. I think it's possible that he's a shot fighter,
but there's also issues, I would guess with the offensive

(01:14:15):
line and with some of the play calling. When you
see the Giants, is it all Eli or there are
the factors? Well, I think Eli is is a problem,
and I think a lot of people have been, you know,
kind of struggling to say that it's a problem. But
Eli has really had issues with this ball placement this year, Doug,
And you can do everything right, but if you can't
throw it where you want to, then you don't have

(01:14:35):
anything as a quarterback. And that's been an issue all
season and even we all understand that se Kwan Barkley
is spectacular. We get that, but there has not been
a consistency to their run game. You all you have
to do is go back two weeks. Berkeley had two
runs in that game. One was twenty yards, one was
thirty yards. His other thirteen runs game minus two. There's

(01:14:56):
not a sustaining element to their run game. There's a
spectacular element of the run game, and an argument could
easily be made that the sustaining element is more important
than the spectacular element. I'm I'm not big on looking
snapshot of one game, but I do think it was big,
speaking of the Giants, for the Eagles to go in
there and thump them. You know, they hopped out all

(01:15:16):
over them, up to six at the half. But what
what percentage of back? You know, they've they've had issues
with injuries that running back. They had an issue earlier
in the season with all Sean Jeffrey missing games. Um,
what percentage of back is that Philadelphi Eagles offense? Um? Well,
obviously with Wentz, who's to me a very high level player,
I think that, uh, they'll be close to being back.

(01:15:41):
You know, I think that they have Uh, they're somewhat
limited at the receiver position, but I think he has
such a good feel with zach Ertz and with Alshon
Jeffrey that I think they can compensate to a large degree. Um,
they don't have a true vertical threat now. I don't
know when Mike Wallace is due back. I think that
if Mike Wallace was back healthy, because it is an
aggressive downfield thrower, that would add much to their offense. UM,

(01:16:05):
I think their run game can work with when Dell
Smallwood and Corey Clemon. Corey Clement I really liked coming
out of Wisconsin. I thought he was a very draftable player.
He went undrafted. I'm not suggesting he's a Zekiel Elliott,
but I think you can give that kid. You know,
eleven twelve carries a game and he could be a
sustaining piece of an offense. Last thing the New England
Patriots seemed to they seem to establish the run game.

(01:16:27):
I know it changes week the week. They're very pragmatic,
but isn't that in addition to getting element back, the
fact that they have committed to running the football with
Sony Michelle, what's changed their season? Yeah? I mean, one
couldn't make that argument that that's really where it started.
They've won three in a row, and in those three games,
Michelle rushes eighteen rushes, twenty four rushes and each game,

(01:16:48):
with the exception of the eighteen rush game when he
had he had a hundred. So the question is, now,
as you said, great point about Bill Belichick being pragmatic,
they go to Chicago, who has a very good run
d defense. Do we see Michelle with twenty carries or
now is this the week where, now that their weapons
are back in another week with Josh Gordon, did they
spread it out? But the run game has really been

(01:17:09):
the driving force the last three weeks. Yeah. I was
at that Miami game, and Miami did a good job
using Frank Gore, especially on first down. You know, so
it's so they got to third manageable. I would expect
a lot of what Miami did work a lot of
quick throws, getting rid of it quickly and and running
the football at or away from Khalil Mack was was
what it looked at brock oswhile I can beat and

(01:17:31):
I know it was in the heat, but brock oswell,
I can beat him. I would think that, well, if
Chicago's gonna miss all those tackles again, then then it
will be an issue. I mean, when you throw a
six yard pass and it turns into a seventy yard touchdown,
that's a problem for your defense, No question about a
lot of a lot of the lateral throws for the
Miami Dolphins and did that defense. Greg, thanks so much
for joining us. Always love your insight, appreciate it. Thank you.

Everybody's still up, We're still up watching the game, We're waiting,
We're waiting or waiting. And it didn't fact deliver, although
not as much drama as I would have liked, you know,
like I would have liked the Brewers to put on
a couple of runs like bases loaded and somebody gets
out of it or score run. Then the Dodgers there
was just kind of no offense. And then you go

back to Alex Rodriguez is who, well, who do you ask?
Was it dozer? He asked about bunting, as Brian doeser
about Bunting's like, yeah, it kind of depends upon the guy.

of like being this big fish in a small pond.
I kind of like the fact that somebody else's team
and then I can go back to l A and
l A still home, but this is where I work.

(01:20:48):
That's what I feel about Kevin Durant, Like everyone says
they want the pressure of New York and if you've
ever visited New York, it's amazing. Have you ever lived
and worked in New York You get to about two weeks,
You're like, oh my gosh, it's just everything's hard. I
personally love New York City. When I worked there with CBS,

(01:21:09):
I do not so secretly wish we would have lived
in the city. We lived in the suburbs, like an
hour away. But I did so because I knew who
I was. I knew that my kids needed to see
grass when they opened up. Here's a story for you.
Tim house Aback's a great friend of mine, and they
lived in New York City before he moved. I think
he's in Nashville now. And they rented a house in Greenwich,

(01:21:35):
Connecticut one summer and the first morning the kids got
up and they're like, Dad, Dad, Dad, can we go
to the park. He's like, dude, it's seven o'clock in
the morning. We just got up. It's the first night
at this house. We rented it for the whole summer. Like, no, no, Dad,
can we go to the park? Looks it's a playscape
out there. There's a tennis court out there, Like, that's
the backyard. Go play. And as much as you think that,

(01:21:58):
that's what it's like when you're when you living in
the city, you gotta know who you are and if
you're okay with always having a car service kind of
being gray, people being hyper critical and having crazy expectations
and things being five times as expensive as they are
to buy elsewhere. Some of that he experiences being in
northern California. You're fine, but you better know who you are.

(01:22:22):
And based upon how he's reacted to criticism to this point,
that's not who Kevin Durant is. Doug Gottlieb Show here
on Fox Sports Radio, this is a weird thing watching
myself on TV as the NFL Network is replaying the
Bears and the Dolphins and Cody Parky's missed field goal

(01:22:47):
that went wide right, laces out Merino laces out Manny
Machado is doing his absolute best to help the Dodgers
cause and hurt his cause that's next to the Dog Show.

(01:23:37):
You know what everybody says they want? What do they
all say? We want? We want honesty? You know, well
we even we even say to tell you the truth,
which means what everything before that was lie? Let me
be honest with you. You weren't honest with him before,
Jimmy Butler, Odell Beckham Jr. Manny Machado. You know, you

(01:24:02):
guys make a lot of really interesting points, and you
guys are really honest. And there's a term it's called
honest to a fault, and you've all had your faults.
Odell Beckham Jr. Didn't say anything which he didn't believe
to be and probably it is true. No, he isn't true,

(01:24:26):
right like if Odell Beckham Jr. Feels like they weren't
playing that hard or didn't have that much heart, obviously
we can all see that Eli Manning wasn't won't throw
the ball downfield, and by not not saying anything for
a short period time when they had a quarter when
he was asked about a quarterback issue, tells you they
have a quarterback issue. But dude, when things are going bad,

(01:24:52):
we don't need you point out things are going bad
because we're all supposed to be pulling in the same direction.
Jimmy Butler pointing out that Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony
Towns don't have his toughness, don't have his tenacity and
the defensive side of the ball. Dude, you're not wrong,

(01:25:14):
and you're probably right in terms of the Timberwolves not
being able to win without you, But some things are
better left unsaid. And Manny Machado saying, you know, I'm
not being Johnny Hustle, which I don't know which one
am more mortified by the fact that he didn't know

(01:25:36):
it was Charlie Hustle not Johnny Hustle, or the fact
that he said, um, that's not really my thing. Not
my thing. This is like my kids saying, Dad, vegetables
aren't my thing, neither cancer or obesity, So let's eat
the vegetables. That's the way we look at it. There's

(01:25:58):
a thing called being honest to a fall, and all
three have been honest to a fault. We we do
we want to hear the truth, but sometimes people you
work with don't want to hear the truth. And oh yeah,
by the way, when you're in a contract year and
you're Manny Machado, no matter how well you're producing in

(01:26:21):
the games, one of the things that we want out
of a two or three hundred million dollar player is
Mike Trout. If you've been to a Major League Baseball
game that Mike Trout plays in, what you're blown away
by is not just how big he is, that's a
big dude, how athletic he is, but also how hard
it looks like he plays. He can ground out to

(01:26:43):
shortstop and not run at full speed, but it makes
you think that he's still running, like yeah, that's how
it's supposed to look. So Manny can say like, look,
I'm not one of these guys that's gonna sprint full
speed when I know the only way I get on
on first base is if there's just a terrible throw

(01:27:05):
or a non catch. But um, just because you don't
sprint doesn't mean you loaf. And whatever you do you
don't say, hey, I'm not really into that. Yeah, that
old hustle thing. Not really into that. That's not really

(01:27:27):
exactly how it works. It's actually the opposite of the
way it works. And while while I don't want a phony,
it's this is not that hard, you know what, I
gotta do a better job running. It's on me. I
gotta do a better job running. It looks bad. I
want to be a leader. I want to be some
of the guy's respect. He admitted it looked bad, but
he also said, like, it's not really my thing. Yeah,

(01:27:51):
well it's not anybody's thing. But you do it one
in case there's a bobble or in case there's a throw,
and two because of what it represents, because of what
it represents, how you address, how you act, how you

(01:28:12):
care yourself, how you warm up, who you sit with. Like,
does it really matter where you sit on a bench? No,
but how it looks. Are you attentive doesn't really really matter.
You could be on your phone when you're sitting there
on the bench while the game is being played, and
you can get up and still hit a home run.

(01:28:32):
I know it's a legal Major League baseball, but I'm
just saying you could doesn't really affect your play. You could,
but you don't because of how it looks. You know,
we're very fortunate here at Fox Sports Trading. We have
very very lenient dress code policy. But when somebody important

(01:28:56):
is coming in, you're throwing a pair of pants and
a button down shirt or a polo. Sure, why because
that looks and many Machado he knew it didn't look good,
and then he admitted it didn't look good and said,
I'm not really into it, and I'm not really into shaving.
I hate shaving, but I do it. Why because how

(01:29:16):
it looks on TV, and it it points out, like
the TV is important. How you look as important, and
your skin will look better if it's cleanly shaven. I
was in the Dolphins front offices and met with some

(01:29:37):
of the people from the Bronx, from the Bear's front offices,
and I told you guys this yesterday or the last
two days, and I mean it's completely true. Both of
those franchises. I feel like they have a really really
good group of guys, really really good camaraderie and a

(01:29:57):
big reason why they don't have Jake Cutler why because
j color it wasn't just that he didn't care. He
told people he didn't care. He said, caring or acting
like I'm caring, essentially is not my thing, which is
not the thing of many Machado. This is a big

(01:30:21):
game for Clayton Kershaw. Huge got lit up in game one.
A chance here in game four on short rest, if
he can get through six or seven innings and give
that bullpen a lead and a chance to win the game,
this would be a huge game, gigantic almost. How do

(01:30:42):
you think he does? I mean, I know you're rooting
for Yes, I am rooting for him, but as unbiased
I would say, at least I say he goes at
least six innings, at least six things. I think you
nailed the yesterday with rich Hill. Four. By the way,
rich Hill ran out his his bunt. Rich Hill tried
to swing. It was bad. Then he ran on his bunt.
He almost did the a rod trying to trying to
swap the ball down. It's called the drag button. Little

(01:31:04):
We'll just stick it out there and then run as
you're going. Yeah, but at least he ran. At least
he ran as opposed to man him a shoutout. But
you were right in terms of the number of innings
we had over under his four and he went over four.
I believe went over four. And I know that we're
we fall into the strap of us millennials. Is the

(01:31:25):
new generation. We've had this problem in baseball for as
long as I've been covering baseball is that younger players
fight the way in which older players say the game
should be played. And I think it's more important to
baseball than it is to anyone else because baseball it's
built on the idea of its virtues and doing it

(01:31:48):
the right way and acting a particular way. The heck
of a catch in center field. IM not sure it
did anything that was a heck of a catcher. It
is that bell and drop in centerfield. Let me bring
in Dan Buyer, who's watching this game. They rolled up
a hit. When it was a hit, it was amazing.

(01:32:09):
It was an amazing catch that was it was. It
did bounce. I mean, I don't think anybody no he
caught Dodgers trying to cheat Again. Do Dodgers have bad fans? No? No, no, Actually,
if I think their fandom is underrated because people think

(01:32:31):
of l A as a town that people don't show
up to games, and that's totally incorrect when it comes
to the Dodgers, and and one of the reasons that
it's a late arriving, crowded Dodger Stadium is it's hard
to get there. It's hard to get there. Um all right.
Then there's this other story about the Houston Astros, which

(01:32:51):
I find to be fascinating because Baseball has already concluded
their investigation, so the Astros, the Astros have remember a
guy who's on staff, on staff who was apparently in
position to try and keep the opposition from stealing signs

(01:33:11):
while he was being alleged to have still stolen signs.
This is one of the craziest things I ever heard.
Here's a Major League Baseball had just said, with respect
to both incidents. Regarding a Houston. Houston Astro's employee security
identified an issue, addressed it, and turned the matter over
the department investigations. A thorough investigation, including the astro's employee

(01:33:32):
was monitoring the field to ensure the opposing club was
not violating any rules. See, we weren't cheating, We weren't cheating.
We were making sure you weren't cheating. Doesn't that sound
like the guy who's looking around on the test. Yeah,
I wasn't alwayn't cheating. I was just looking around to
make sure nobody's looking at my paper. Let's do it.

(01:33:55):
Uh sorry, Mr mcphan, I was just looking around. I
didn't want to. I'm gonna make sure that Yes, I
understand that the student to my right is a straight
A student and she actually leads study groups on a
daily basis for this class, but I want to make
sure that she was not stealing for me. And then

(01:34:16):
the investigation was wrapped up in like fifteen minutes, like yeah,
I know what happened last night, but case closed, Case closed.
Coming up next, Mr Stiff arm Vance McDonald joins the
show all as Caim with the Steelers are back on
track and the team to beat in the a f

buying experience, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, Dodgers get
out of the first inning without We've only given up

(01:35:00):
one hit, no runs. So now the Dodgers are at
the dish and we have a little in uh in
studio rivalry, right in studio rivalry. John Ramos noted Dodger fan.
And then of course you have Wisconsin born, Wisconsin bred
Dan Buyer. I believe that if the Ramos proposed in

(01:35:23):
in true Dodger Stadium style, that if the Dodgers win,
he stabs, uh, yes, that's what happens. Whereas if if
Dan Buyer wins, Ramos has to pound three beers like
you would do that old county stand and eight eight
pounds of sausage. Yes, yes, clog the arteries. The thing

(01:35:47):
I would agree with you guys that Dodger Stadium has
a different a much different vibe and there's much more
energy there than most people would assume because it's l
a and it's always been and they're like, when did
that change? That change when the Raiders left? Right it
changed when the Raiders left? Is you have a there's

(01:36:08):
at least in the bleachers, you have a demo of
fans that come to get ripped and have a good time,
and they're super into the game and super into their team,
and they're a little bit boisterous and a little bit
on edge. I'm not saying they're full hardcore Raiders fans
where you fear for your life. Man, Hey, wait, what wait? What?

(01:36:30):
What just happened with Miley? Wade Miley apparently was on
a pitch account that was five pitches and has now
just been taken out of the game by Craig Council.
So it was a leadoff single by Cody Ballinger that
ended up yeah, allowing the excuse me a leadoff walk,
not a lead off single, but a five pitch walk,

(01:36:51):
and now Wade Miley's out of the game. That that's
the first hitter the Dodgers had all game. Correct, that
is correct? Yes, okay, I mean and things you don't
see how we'll get back to that in a second.
Let's welcome in a Vance McDonald, who uh. I don't
know whether he's more he's more popular for a stiff

(01:37:12):
arm or for what he did Davonte, or for the
fact that he what he did he did davontez perfect um.
Vance McDonald joins us on The Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Are you more popular in the city
or in your locker room right now? Uh? Man, it's
just it's just fun anywhere you are right now in Pittsburgh. Uh,

(01:37:33):
you know, just head into the bye week. We got
high spirits kind of what we've done handled in ourselves
last two weeks. It's just, uh, we got a rolling
right now, and we're just excited to keep that momentum. Man.
This is Look, this is not your first year with
the Steelers, so you know how good that rivalry is.
But it's it's different when Cincinnati's actually legitimately good. Last
year they weren't good. It was they were banged up.

(01:37:54):
You know, Look, you played in San Francisco, so you
go back, Uh, pique San Francisco them and I think
Seahawks that's probably the what was the level in terms
of in comparison to Seahawks Niners? How is that game
on Sunday? Yeah, I mean it definitely has its own identity. Uh.
You know, even for someone who doesn't know a ton

(01:38:15):
about football, you know, I mean, they just know that
Steelers Bengals game, it's going to be physical and rough.
And um, usually that's the man that comes out on top.
So I think, uh, I think it definitely has its
own idea. You know, it's got its own stigma and
and you know it really is every time you step
in that stadium with those jerseys on, going against each other, man,

(01:38:37):
you know you're gonna get this. This this is your
breakout season. Obviously last year backing up Jesse James. Of
course you had that huge game Week three against the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I'm speaking with Vance McDonald. He's the
tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers who suddenly have turned
their season collectively around. What's it like for you personally
to finally be getting the looks be a focal point

(01:38:57):
of of an offense. Yeah, man, it's it's it really is.
I've I really tried to just embrace you know, the
role um over the years that I've had. You know,
this is my sixth year and obviously, you know, the
targets weren't there early on in my career and you know,
battling through injuries and this year obviously it's it's we've

(01:39:18):
gotten off to a little hotter start and so man,
it really is, it's it's a ton of fun. And
it's one of those things where, um, you know, in
order to be the best teammate you can be, you
really do, you've gotta be you gotta be able to
be malleable and kind of you know, adjusting to uh
in two different roles, in two different calls what you
need to do in the game. And you know, it
might even go to a game thinking like, hey, we're

(01:39:40):
really going to run the ball a lot, so you know,
you've got a high profile guys. You know, I'm sorry,
but this week, you know, we really just got to
dominate up front. A lot of scrimmage and it's just
one of those things that if you don't embrace it, man,
it can really add you know, a lot of stress
on on your plate that you really don't need. So
it's really is it's it's just one of those things, man.
It's it's just a lot of fun to play ball, right,

(01:40:00):
especially you know in a city that's just so so
great and uh, you know, just known for winning championships
and uh, yeah, I'm just happy to be a part
of the dude. You know, there's there there was so
there's been so much talk about Levan and some of
it's quietly because when you're winning in two James Connor
has been playing pretty well, but eventually he's going to
show up. What's the discussion like in the locker room

(01:40:23):
about Levian? Now? It's crazy, like you would think that
there would be a really like a lot of chatter
and there really isn't. And you know, I don't. I'm
not telling a lie or a fib or anything like that.
It's just it is. It's just one of those things
that you know, it is what it is. It's you know,
it's a business. We know that. And um, you know,

(01:40:44):
I guess I can only speak for me personally. Uh,
you know, I I don't hold anything. It's the guy.
I would welcome him back, you know tomorrow if we
had you know, scheduled practice and stuff, the meetings of
the facility, and I'd ask him how his time was off.
But you know, it is one those things that whenever
he does decide to come back, you know, we expected
to play and contribute and be the great player that

(01:41:04):
we've all seen. Um, and you know that really is
that's just that's the expectation. But as far as holding
grudges and and really kind of like what you asked,
like about the locker room, it's kind of almost lighthearted.
And I know that there will be some frustrations and such,
you know that I brought forward and we'll deal with
them whenever they happen. But it really is it's very
lighthearted around the locker room. Like there's been a couple

(01:41:26):
of like you know, like very like lighthearted jabs, you know,
just about him maybe showing up and then you know,
not showing up, so and we try to keep it
fun and it's it really it's about all everything, and
you feel out the problems to build up and become
something bigger than what they are. Um and obviously this
is you know it starting the season with Lady on

(01:41:47):
Bell and not having Lady on Beil. I mean, it's
it's it's very significant. But at the same time, it's
like you said, you have guys that show up and
and fit in roles like James Conner who are doing
absolutely great things. I don't think anybody I don't think
anybody's can to emulate James Connor's haircut though. That's that's
the big thing. You don't you don't you don't run
that risk. It's so bold and it's so bold that

(01:42:09):
he and he does a great shop pulling it off.
And it's one of those things that among the locker
room the first day. You know, the guy just got
ran into the ground about it. I mean, you know,
being year two and doing something that bold, and you know,
I guess not exactly having the track record to back
it up in the NFL. You know, he stepped up

(01:42:30):
to the plane and he I don't think he knocked
out the park, So I congratulated. Um. I'm not sure
how many people were about your hometown. You're from Winnie, Texas, right,
that's way way east Texas, isn't it? When he Texas? Yeah,
just like just like one of the poop. Um do
you guys have do you guys have a stoplight? We
had three? We have three. We pride ourselves most three. Um,

(01:42:53):
but it is uh yeah, I mean like you can
hold your breath and drive through the town one into another,
for sure? Is it? Did you guys used to drag
Maine and school when you were Central High School? Where
you guys, was that the big thing you get in
your car? You drag men? You know we we uh
we would just pick a rice field and uh we
would drive on the levees down the rice fields and park.
We we were smarter about our gass music and diesel usage,

(01:43:15):
so we would just drive in the middle of nowhere. Man,
that's that was the game we played. What kind of
pickup did you have in high school? Because you don't
have a car, you get a pick up, right? Or
I said, yeah, I had a four f one fifty
Boone's farm wine or or were you going malt liquor
in high school? I was drinking water and gatorade? Man,
I was preparing. Were you were You're a big triple jumper,

(01:43:37):
weren't you? I was a triple jumper and um, yeah, man,
that's track season always came around and yeah those are
good times. Yeah, triple jumping is one of the weirdest
extra we're just looking exercises there is right, like you
cover a ton of ground, but the whole way in
which were like, who was the first guy to establish

(01:43:57):
like this is how we're gonna triple jump? So it's
actually funny you brought that up. I can remember distinctly
in high in junior high, Um, you know, the first
year you're running track whatever, and we're over there on
the high school field and everyone's already embarrassed because there's
high school kids like walking around and stuff, and uh,
you know you're in your weird oddly shaped you know
bodies at thirteen twelve thirteen, and uh, coach said, you know,

(01:44:21):
everyone's gonna step up in this line and everyone's gonna
try to do this, and he demonstrated the triple jomp.
And you either we're going to be a triple dropper
or weren't based on that one test. And yeah, needless
to say, a lot of people just couldn't really get
that form dowt because it's super awkid I agree? Yeah?
Um why is it Rice more like Stanford or Duke

(01:44:43):
or Vandy? Like I've been to Rice. It's an unbelievable school.
Uh just Vince McDonald joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show.
He played at Rice that when you were there, you
guys had that rare kind of surge. A couple of
coaches kind of got it going. But why why isn't
Rice outside of college baseball better in sports with the
huge endowment and you know, why why is it the

(01:45:06):
Stanford of Texas athletically? Yeah? Um man, I don't know.
That's a great question, you know number one, I think
it's a larger part. You really just don't hear a
lot about Rice, you know that. Of course that's kind
of just comes full circle and with without their lack
of success, you know, uh, consistently. But I even find

(01:45:29):
myself now, you know, asking people are you know, responding
to people ask me where I played college, and I said, oh,
Rice University, and the moments that I don't back that
up with pison downtown Houston, they usually say, well where
is that at? And so you know that has something
to do with it. I think, Um, I think just
the low student population has a lot to do. And

(01:45:50):
then we had undergrads whenever we're there. I think it's
the second smallest Division one school in the United States,
actually behind Tulsa with football, I think I think I
think Wake might be small. By the way, if somebody
says where where is it at? You know they didn't
go to Rice, right because they had to descended prepossession
like you're not you know, you know, you're not Rice material.
Like it's it's funny like Ryan Fitzpatrick he went to Harvard.

(01:46:12):
People like, oh, well he went to Harvard, Like, well,
Rice is kind of the Harvard of Texas. And yet
you know I wouldn't chuse you why he went to Rice.
Oh well, he must be a genius, he must be brilliant.
No one makes that. A lot of people don't make
that that assertion. Mm hmm. I completely agree. And it's
a testment just on my experience that people ask me
where I played, like I said, and they just again

(01:46:33):
they just have no idea where Rice is Vantes perfect?
Go man, he's an unbelievable player. And um really is man.
He he is, He's got his his little Niche defines
and which is what? Which is what? Uh? Geez? He

(01:46:55):
is he takes gamesmanship and pushes the boundaries of it. Uh.
And again that's just like things that you almost dare
officials to call in the legality of the game. But
at the same time it really is. It's a part
of the game. That is, you either have it or
you don't. I mean, you think of any other sports.
You think of basketball, You think of being down the paint,

(01:47:17):
you think of being big bodies and using your body
and just like you know, not necessarily talking down and
throwing insults, but you know, using using games and shipping
in your in your words, um, man, being consistently physical.
It's one of those things in football again that just
would wear a guy down. And you you really like
on the other side of it, the receiving end of it,

(01:47:37):
You're like, man, really, are you really going to do
this right now? Like we are fifty yards away from
his play. But it's it's a testmate to who he is.
It's a testament to how hard he is. He's a
smart player, um, not necessarily in his decision making a
lot of times, but in as a football awareness, um,
you know. And it's a lot of that too, comes
down to the fact that we play them twice a
year and you know he's up there and experience it's

(01:48:00):
in better in years and so um. But really, man,
he's all around. He's just a great player and super physical.
Like I said, in that the way the game is headed,
you know, it's it's one of those things that that
isn't highlighted enough anymore, and it doesn't. It doesn't allow
it to be just because of the how the safety
and issues that it brings. But yeah, second year in

(01:48:21):
uh No, I have a lot of respect to the guy.

Football League. Congrats on the hot start you've earned this

to the house. We're gonna be the the in laws come

get away. Nice nice, he goes, good go. Uh he
guy's gonna go leaf watching. I'm not sure leaf watching
is actually gonna take place anyway. You've earned it. You've

(01:49:07):
earned it plus your wife and I'm sure a full
night's sleep, uh with the kids at home while you're
at work. Thanks so much for joinas many. All right,
that's Vance McDonald joining us from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's
he's been he's been having a tremendous season for the
Black and Yellow. Let's get you caught up with what's
going on in Major League Baseball. Some off the field

(01:49:27):
and a game on the field. Right now, here's Dan Byron.
Through one inning. I'm Fox Sports One. Brewers and Dodgers
are scoreless in Game five of the National League Championship Series.
Has already been excitement following last night inning affair won
by the Dodgers to even the series up at two.
Brewers got the leadoff hitter on and Lorenzo Caine with
a single that was almost robbed by Cody Bellinger, but

(01:49:51):
then Kane was thrown out stealing second base. In the
bottom half of the first, Brewer starter Wade Miley lasted
five pitches, walked Cody Bellinger on five pitches, and then
was replaced by skipper Craig Council. Brandon Woodruff came in
got out of the jam by getting Many Machado to
ground into an inning ending double play. Brewers and Dodgers
scoreless at the end of one There's more Machadow news,

(01:50:13):
as Ken Rosenthal reports, Machado was fined by Major League
Baseball for kicking the foot of hay Sous Hegelar and
last night's Game four, multiple reports saying that Machado was
find ten thousand dollars for those actions. There's a game
for tonight in the Alcs Red Sox and Astros. Red
Sox are up to one, with Game four in Houston
at eight thirty nine Eastern time on TBS. Rick Porcello

(01:50:35):
goes up against Charlie Morton. Major League Baseball found that
the Astros were not stealing signs of opposing teams during
this year's playoffs. Baseball has instructed all teams to refrain
from having someone in a box as the Astros were,
claiming that they were trying to monitor the Red Sox
from doing any cheating. Apparently that practice not allowed anymore

(01:50:55):
by Major League Baseball, but the Astros found of doing
nothing wrong by MLB. League Baseball says it's now a
close to matter. The New York Rangers take out the
Washington Capitals at seven o'clock Eastern time and tonight's Discover
Card key matchup. Speaking of matchups, become a new card member.
Discovered Card will match all the cash back you've earned
dollar for dollar at the end of your first year.

opener against the Spurs despite his demand for a trade, sends.
Guard Devin Booker is gonna play their matchup against the MAVs,
returning from hand surgery, and the Miami Dolphins are gonna
start rockcost while Er at quarterback for the second straight week.
They've got the Lions. Derek Anderson gets the start for

(01:51:38):
the Bills against the Colts. Doug Doug Gotlin Show, Fox
Sports Radio. So Wade Miley through more warmup pitches than
pitches that happened. That just happened. I think about that.
You're the starter, all right? Wait, how we need to
we need to when you get you know, let's try
and get like five, six, seven innings. Let's let's go here.

(01:52:00):
Here we go, Babe, Here we go. Babe. How anamona, babe,
how man a babelna, you know, all the things you
say in Major League Baseball. Gets his name as the starter.
He warms up, it introduced, and all a couple of pitches.
Five pitches in, he walks Cody Bellinger and Craig Council
comes and takes the ball from Wow. Well, the good

(01:52:24):
thing is they haven't used their bullpen in a while.
And by a while, I mean fourteen hours. Oh my goodness.
That's a different approach, A different approach. I mean, like, look,
there's a lot of a lot of what you're seeing
now in the NFL is because we grew up playing

(01:52:46):
the NFL on Madden And I'm gonna tell you that.
I don't think that's where Craig Council gets it from.
But there's a lot of uh, you know, MLB the
Show or RBI Baseball, why not start your closer or
why not start a reliever until he gets tired? But
five pitches in that was fast. Imagine if you're Ma

(01:53:10):
and Pa Miley somewhere in Nebraska. Ma, yes, pau Wade's
pitching today in the NLCS. Oh that's nice. Listen. Let
me let me call all the grandkids and tell them
to turn on What is it on? It's on Fox? Oh,

(01:53:30):
it's on Fox Sports one. What channel is that? I
don't know that. You turn it on? And oh, hey, Ma,
my wades on? Wait? No, wait, where's he going? Did
he get out of that inning? No, paw, he was
pulled from the game. Well, there's nobody out and only
one runner on. Yeah about that. And I'm not saying

(01:53:53):
that Wade Miley deserves like the utmost respect to me
as a guy that's won seventy one and lost seventies
six games during his major league baseball careers from Ham
and Louisiana. But dude, five pitches really and he's not hurt. Wow,
poor parents. Slip on the game. Like I thought you

(01:54:15):
said way he was pitching today? I did say what
he was pitching today? Where is he? I didn't. Meanwhile,
Clayton Kershaw one, two three and the Dodgers uh still
zero zero going to the bottom half of the second.
And we talked about analytics going too far. We'll see

(01:54:36):
if Craig Craig Council gets bitten by the analytics bug
as the game proceeds. One of the best excuses we've
seen in sports in a long time. I'll share it
with you next. Be sure to catch live editions of

(01:55:18):
If you turn on Facebook where you go to stadium Sports,
I'm doing. Um it's like an hour college football show.
I'm hosting with Eric Wood formerly the Buffalo Bills, and C. J.
Spiller who played with him with the Bills but also
a former Clemson Tiger. So uh, that'll be a lot
of fun to do. So we had a lot of
football upcoming. I will have my picks for you Friday,
but Fire and Bucky Brooks tomorrow. Speaking of buyers, Fire

(01:55:45):
Now is a fantastic time to buy new Honda. Is
it Shop Honda dot com or visit your local Honda dealer. Damn,
what do you got? Let's give you an update from
Game five of the National League Championship Series. There through
two innings in Los Angeles, the Brewers and Dodgers scoreless.
It may seem kind of boring and playing. But it's
been anything. But we've already got a couple of challenges,
of course. Wade Miley, the Brewers starter, lasted just five pitches,

(01:56:08):
one batter walk Cody Bellinger, and then was removed by
Brandon Woodruff. There are reports saying that the Brewers are
gonna start Wade Miley in Game six coming up on
Friday in Milwaukee, but it's scoreless between the Dodgers and
Brewer's Manny Machado grounded into a double play. He was
also fined by Major League Baseball for kicking Hayesu sagular

(01:56:28):
for in last night's Game four. Did you kick him
a kick? Yeah, I'd say it's a kick, alright, nudge
kick didn't get out of the way. You know what
that is? That's the baseball equivalent too. You're walking down
the hall and there's a guy he's walking. You're like
about to hit shoulders and you could veer out of
the way, but instead you don't. Chicken. Ryan Music is

(01:56:52):
walking up here. Yeah, Dan, you're you're done for today.
That's it. Oh, I got Wade Miley. That's it, all right,
who's taking over? Let let's go to the pen. Al
hey a Doug Dan Dan. Following an investigation, MLB found
the Houston Astros were not stealing signs of opposing teams
during the this year's playoffs. The fining say the astro's

(01:57:15):
employee was positioned to monitor the opposing team to make
sure they weren't violating any rules. UM and Major League
Baseball found that the Astros weren't stealing signs, but they
liked it so much that they also said, like, hey,
nobody can do that anymore. If the Astros did nothing wrong,
why are the Astros not allowed to have a guy

(01:57:35):
in the in that uh O talk pit? Oh? Hey,
by the way, Ramos, you're out. Music here is all right, Doug. Well,
let's go to the NFL, where the NFL Commissioner Roger
Goodell says there's never been a better time to be
a fan of the NFL, citing access to the game
and quality of the game. I mean, like, what is it?

(01:57:55):
What is he supposed to say? Right? Um, there's never
been a better time. I do think there's a ton
of access, um and I think if you like offensive football,
they understand exactly exactly what they're looking for. Uh. You
know what, music you're out. Um, I'm this is a
better matchup for Bailey the intern, all right, Doug. So, Today,

(01:58:18):
the Chargers released season ticket information for the new stadium
in l A cheapest ticket for a season ticket is
fifty dollars per game with a hundred dollar feet. The
Rams cheapest ticket for a season ticket was sixty with
the PSL price of one thousand dollars, which you don't
have to pay the PSL if you're a Charger fan.

(01:58:39):
I do not believe. So just a hundred bucks, that's all,
that's one's a thousands to steal. Yeah, I've heard that
that stadium is gonna be unreal. I do think it's
it's still gonna be a bad deal for the Chargers.
But you know, look if if they win and win consistently,
people do like a winner. But it's just very very hard.

(01:59:00):
I mean, the Rams are gonna have enough trouble filling
up the stadium, let alone the Chargers. Okay, good job Bailey, Bailey,
and keep going. But it's the thing, I guess I'll
finish yourself. The NFL is investigating the Miami Dolphins for
how the team handled Ryan Tannehill's shoulder injury. On the

(01:59:20):
injury report. Tan Hill was limited in practice earlier in
the week after suffering the shoulder injury in Week five
against the Bengals. Well, I can. I can tell you
that he wasn't on the injury He wasn't on the
injury report. They got mad at me because I tweeted
out that he wasn't on the injury report, and that
Friday he left practice. It was a closed practice. It
shouldn't have done it. Whatever, But I would defend them

(01:59:42):
in that he was actually at practice. He was there
and he was feeling pain, and we were told the
pain got worse. That's the only reason that he he
was on the injury report. So I actually think the
facts will back up what the Dolphins are saying that
Tannehill himself said it was he was sore and he
thought it would go away. It got worse. He got

(02:00:03):
an m r I Friday, and the m r I
he says, was clean, but he was just too sore
to be making throws. Remember he got beat up pretty
good against the Steadi Bengals. You want to fish this
thing up, sure, I can take it. Uh. The Timberwolves
are planning to play Jimmy Butler and tonight's opener against
the Spurs. Despite his demand for a trade. Ownership met
with Butler recently and agreed to play for the squad

(02:00:24):
while the front office would look for a potential trade partner.
This is just awkward, right, It's just it's it's awkward.
It's the Hey, let's still be in the same holiday
photos and hold hands and kiss and make out like
we're together when really we've already filed we were filing
for divorce. The Denver Nuggets have given head coach Michael
Malone a contract extension. No, that's true, that's the true.

(02:00:48):
And they're the best team nobody talks about, right, the
best team nobody talks about. Yokis obviously is a young star. Uh,
the backcourt is pretty good. Like I I think that's
I think that's a playoff team. If if you if,
if you like me, believe that the Timberwolves have a
chance of dropping off. The Spurs are gonna drop off
in Portland's gonna gonna sink some. You have to have

(02:01:08):
teams on the rise other than the Lakers, and I
think the Nuggets are just such a team. And Uh,
to wrap things up, we talked about the new Zo
two's outs. They kind of have a Mars Blackman sort
of commercial, like a play on that out for the
new a Lonzo Ball Big Baller brand shoes, which, if
you missed it earlier, a mere two hundred dollars and
not the almost five dollars that the first edition of

(02:01:30):
the shoes were. Yeah, it looks I mean, maybe they're
comfortable or maybe they look they look like knockoff shoes
and looks like he stepped in, uh stepped in painting
out there and pressed that the press. Alright, So Kershaw
is allowed a runner here in the top of the
third inning with one out. What's he hitting on the

(02:01:52):
gun there? Buyer? I have not seen. My eyes are
so bad from this distance, I can't see if he's
and I would love to make up a number, but
I haven't been. Now Brandon Woodruffe is bunting. I believe
right he's bunting. Didn't he hit a home run off
of Clayton Kershaw before? Why is he bunning? Swing away, buddy? Swing? Oh,

(02:02:14):
by the way, it's three. It's it's three count of
three and one? Yes, music, what's he hitting for? Kershaw?
I got a fastball at nine and then an eight
nine slider man. Amazing how it changes, right. We talked
with Matt Holiday. If you missed our interview with Matt
Holiday where he explains how different it is now. And
he just walked Brandon Woodruffe getting squeeze a little bit
there that looked like a strike. Walks Brandon Woodroffe runners

(02:02:37):
at first and second, top of the third and one
out right now. Yeah, download that Matt Holiday, download All
