Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom America Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the beautiful sunny
It was a little rainy this morning. City of Angels
now about sixty five, brisk, breezy. Whether wherever you're listening

(00:22):
to us, however you're Megan as parts that Collins says
every day, we're live in Phoenix and San Diego and Cincinnati,
uh in Vegas, in other parts of southern California, up
in UH Eugene, and in Seattle as well, welcome in
and of course throughout the Midwest and the eastern part
of the country. UH Series XM, Channel eighty four. It

(00:46):
is eighty four, right, there's the eighty three. I always
honestly it's eighty three. Did I tweet out of any
four yesterday? Somebody got somebody got a huge listenership on
eighty four and two then did nothing to earn it yesterday. Anyway,
great show for you yesterday, equally good show today. I'm
I'm super super excited, super excited. Let me get to
what happened last night. Uh First, you know, like, look,

(01:09):
I don't know Greg Popovitch. Well, I've interviewed him I
saw him speak what was that two weeks ago with
the Final Four. I think he's an incredible coach. I
don't like the way in which he decides to handle
the media. I'm not a huge fan of that um
but I mean, like, look that has all of that aside.
I'm a human being and I happen to also be

(01:30):
a husband. So when I heard that his wife Aaron
passed away yesterday, I was crestfallen for him. I didn't
know she sick, and I know nothing about his personal life.
He keeps his personal life very, very close to the vest.
We'll get to what I think was at play there
with the interview was just the kind of a classic

(01:51):
something happens in TV that that that I hope you
will understand does not in any way reflect negatively upon
I think Lebron on or Ali la Force at all.
But it's one of those things that we have a
tendency to do and I don't know why we do it.
We also have a tendency to be results oriented. And
because Lebron James was so good scoring the first what

(02:13):
thirteen points, because he is statistically and physically and literally
dominantly like the only thing missing in terms of a
Jordan Esque performance from Lebron James, obviously, end of game
heroics would have been you know, he took a three late,
didn't make it, you know, a couple of shots late.
But the only thing missing was like, oh yeah, hey,

(02:35):
Lebron played thirty six holes in the morning and then
went out and played cards with the boys at night.
Like that's the only thing difference between if you didn't
grow up in the Jordan era, that's the only difference
was Jordan would play like eighteen or thirty six, come out,
drop forty, and then go play cards all night in
Atlantic City and then go do it again the next night.
I sure seemed like but can we just admit that

(02:56):
as good as Lebron is, the rest of his team
is not close to being Uh, is not close to
being up to snuff? Right, Like, Lebron gives a herculean
performance in the first quarter to give them a lead,
one that they would never relinquish. But they almost did.

(03:18):
They almost did, and you can go a Gottli listen, Uh,
if the ifs and butts were candy and nuts, right
be Christmas? Every day you get Kyle Corver, who talked
about dealing with tragedy. His brother passed away a couple
of weeks ago. Kyle Corver hits four threes, They start him,
they start an offensive lineup, and I'm sitting there going

(03:41):
like you you can't script a better performance from Lebron,
right they they did to him what frankly the Calves
used to do to Michael Jordan. I don't know how
many of you remember the speaking of Jordan's is Lenny
Wilkins was the guy who's like, I'm not double team
in Jordan's He's gonna have to go for fifteen or
to beat us. And you know what he do, He
go for fifty. But we're we're talking about the Pacers,

(04:06):
who I know, Darren Collison led the NBA in three
point shooting. But Collison, Miles Turner, bug Don Bugdanovich, Thaddy
is young. That's their starting lineup. And of course Victor Oladipo,
who regrets to the mean we had a wide open
three down three in a miscommunication and didn't make it.

(04:26):
But that's more who Oladipo is. Nine of eighteen, two
of eight and three. All of those things that Lebron
could not have been better, could not have been better
and they won by three points at home. And oh yeah,
by the way, I don't do we I don't know
if we have an update yet on on Kevin Love.
I believe h X rays were negative, although X rays

(04:49):
are negatives, but Kevin Love ain't healthy. And as we've
seen in the NBA playoffs, teams make adjustments game to
game team and I'm not sure there is another adjustment
outside of going with an offensive lineup for the Calves.
Lebron was asked after the game about being aggressive. He

(05:11):
basically kind of he gave credit more to Tyl Lou.
Take a listen. No, you said coming into this game
that you wanted to be more assertive. Did you think
it was gonna take a forty six point effort to
uh lead your team to victory? Um. I didn't come
into the game saying I want to be assertive, Coach
Lou said it. I never said I'm gonna play my game,
and I did that tonight. I made some shots early,
gone to a rhythm, you know, defensively, I wanted to

(05:31):
be in tune. I want to try to get my
guys involved as well. But I mean, I don't, I
just don't. I don't come into game saying I'm gonna
try to do this, I'm gonna do that. It just
kind of happens to photo game. I played a game
the right way, and that's just the result of him.
So yeah, that sounds great, But the truth is that
here's a guy who uh, here's a guy who he
came in, he was locked in, he was ready, and
the Pacers, look, there's foul trouble. I mean, Victor Oladipo

(05:52):
gets two early fouls, three fouls in the first half,
barely plays the first quarter, and and Lebron just kind
of takes over the game earl. So he can say
that he didn't come in with the mindset of being
more assertive, but actions not worth right. His actions prove otherwise.
So I look, I'm still struggling to to say that

(06:13):
the Pacers are gonna win this series. But it continues
to look exactly like I thought it would look. Last year.
It took them thirteen games to get to the NBA Finals.
This year it does not feel like it will. If
they get there, Remember, Toronto is waiting for him, and
they may they may have Lebron and Toronto does not.
Toronto may always come up short. But that thing ain't
going four games and then we'll see who they play

(06:36):
in these Eastern Conference finals. But if it's the seventies
sixers with embiid back that there's some mismatches that aren't
going that are uncurable for the Calves. Even if they
have Lebron, who's the ultimate elexer. Lebron is great his
team whatever the opposite of great is wow, just just

(07:01):
a litany of flaws on that team. He couldn't have
played better. They're at home. Oladipo infoul trouble early in
the game and they won by three points. Um. Then
there was the back and forth between him and Ali
La Force. We've since seen video and both sides have

(07:23):
admitted that Ali gave the heads up. Hey, I'm gonna
ask you about Pop's wife? Are you okay commenting on it?
Here's the Q and A on uh Care of Turner Sports.
During this game, we got the really devastating news the
Spurs announced that Aaron coach Popovich's wife officially passed away.
I know you're close with Pop. Any words or thoughts
you'd like to share with him? I'm a huge pop man. Pop. Um,

(07:52):
that's that's such a tragedy and um, you know my
best wishes goals out. Since it's a pop in his family,
I know that's that's devastating news. And um um, I
mean the NBA family, we all sit together. I know
we could read every night was something like this happens,
if it was everything in perspective. So you know, I
send my I'll sell my my my wal wishes and

(08:13):
my prayers up to the heavens above. I know the
man above never makes a mistake, even when you sometimes
have to um acts why. But that's just terrible news.
And I best of luck the popman and then everybody
in San Antonio, the hole Spurs family. That's all I
can say. Allie, Yeah, I don't I look, I don't
put it on Alley because I don't think you know,

(08:34):
Ali is not asking that question lest somebody says you
should ask him that question. And I we just do
this in TV, like we got the raw emotion and
we got him kind of working out his answer on
the fly, and I guess it becomes good TV. I
just they're just such a like you just got done
playing a game. You lost by three you won by

(08:56):
three points. You survive. You could not have played better.
You got Kevin Lover just thumb, you got the miscommunication
out of a time out where Oladipo mrs MS is
an open three. You kind of survive ux hail. There's
a million things you could get to. And somebody up
in Turner Sports was like, hey, we should really ask
him about Gregg Popovitch's wife dying. I don't know, I

(09:21):
don't know. I guess we got that lot of lebron
is a thoughtful human being, and uh that that Ali's
really good at her job, that she can smart smart enough,
she's smart enough and thoughtful enough to give him the
heads up so that if he didn't want to touch it,
he didn't have to ask it. But this is like,
this is a TV thing with me, This is a

(09:42):
you gotta make sure you ask him about Pop's wife.
You're like, why you know? He was just playing a game.
I don't um. I hit as many shots as the
big three from Oklahoma City did in the fourth quarter
last night. That feels like a huge story. We've got

(10:05):
great football guests for you and a really interesting There's
one word that people aren't paying attention to in this
brown story. I want to get to the road ahead
is bound to take some unexpected turns. Farmers Insurance can

I found the Baker Mayfield interview with Sports Illustrator illuminating.
I also thought it was rather illuminating that John Elway

(11:15):
came out today and said the number five pick is available.
Of course, the headline of the Baker Mayfield article in
Sports Illustrator is he doesn't have time for your number
six pick. He didn't study up um, didn't study up
with the Charger for for the for a lunch with
the Chargers, didn't even look at their playbook. I'm not
going below pick number five. And John Elway, who though

(11:37):
he's missed on quarterbacks. Does think he might know something
or other about quarterbacks? Who needs a quarterback? I know
he got one in free agency? Has said thanks, but
no thanks. There's a lot to it. Um. There's a
story that came out earlier today that has that that
that correlates to that in some former fashion in regards
to quarterbacks. And the story is this, that the that

(12:00):
the Cleveland Browns have considered taking two quarterbacks in the draft.
Oh boy, oh boy. Now the Browns are now what
the Clippers used to be. Like, this is what's fascinating
to be about the Clippers now. The Clippers who have

(12:20):
a decision to make in regards to Doc Rivers in
his future, they only think ten million dollars for next year. Now.
The Clippers remember when they had Chris Paul and DeAndre
Jordan's and Paul Pierce and you know, you go through
and Blake Griffin. They couldn't get out of the second round.
They couldn't get out of the second round, second round

(12:41):
of the NBA playoffs. And people say, well, that's the
Clipper curse, Like no, no no, no, the Clippers for thirty years,
it was like you turn on the NBA draft lottery
and there would be Elgin Baylor and the Clipper curse
was whoever they drafted would get hurt or would flame
out or wouldn't want to play for them. Danny Ferry
got hurt, Danny Manning got hurt. Um, you go through

(13:02):
kind of a litany of picks. Michael Conde was the
number one overall pick. The Candy Man can't. But now
we look at the Clipper curses. Couldn't get out of
the second round and they would always get injured. That's
not the same Clipper curse. But there there were things
that they did along the way that we're actually pretty smart. Um,

(13:24):
the same can be said for the Browns. Not everything
that I'm gonna pick a company that's doing well and
a pick pick a company that is just a train wreck.
You know. It's like, hey, not everything Apple does is perfect.
Not everything Amazon does is perfect. It's just not. It

(13:47):
doesn't mean that Apple and Amazon aren't better run companies,
but all the ideas that they have aren't perfectly well
thought out and don't play out as as much as such.
But the story that came out earlier today was the
Browns are considering, actually considering taking not one, but two quarterbacks.

(14:08):
That's that's that's the report, and it has caused NFL
fans to an NFL pundance to laugh at it, and
it's it's actually a really interesting idea, one that has
samerit this from the wringer. This draft season, particularly over

(14:30):
the last six weeks, I've asked multiple members of the
Cleveland Browns organization, which owns the number one, number four
picks in addition to three second rounders, what I thought
would be a very stupid question, have you considered ignoring
the norms and drafting two quarterbacks high in the draft.
And the answer is yes. People I asked have thought
about it, discussed it, and investigated it. This is not
to say, well happen, but the Browns have considered it.

(14:52):
In fact, one person I spoke with who could immediately
rattle off every previous instance of teams drafting two passers
high in the draft he done prep work on the idea.
I mean, look, r G three was drafted in the
first round. Even though the Washington Redskins moved mountains in
order to move up and trade with the St. Louis

(15:13):
Rams to get the draft pick. They also drafted Kirk
cousins in that fourth round, same draft. And remember, none
of this says it's going to happen, but have they
considered it, And the answer is yes, at some point
it's about acquiring assets. And there's also a hit rate

(15:33):
to it. Now, you can't play both quarterbacks at once.
And of course they have Tyrod Taylor making sixteen million dollars,
but what's to say that you couldn't have both quarterbacks
backing up Tyrod Taylor and have them practice and see
which one be alike and which one do you not like?

(15:54):
Which is which is better? Right? Put to put two
bugs and ring and throw on a porch shop and
see who comes out with a full stomach, who comes
out with an empty stomach. It's so interesting. I was
driving down the street the other day and my son said, Dad,

(16:15):
he's nine. Dad, there's two gas stations right across from
each other. That's got to be the dumbest idea ever.
And I tried to explain away, and well, you know, listen, son,
it keeps the prices a little bit down because he
had to be competitive. And remember that just because we're
both driving on the right hand side of the street.

(16:35):
And he's like, but they're both on the right hand
side street. Well, I was like, well, look the cross street.
If you're going this way, you might hit this one.
You go that way that one And I was like,
and he's like, that's just dumb. Don't they split up
the number of cars that you could get there? And
I was like, well, some of it has to do
with zoning. But we do we we do actually do this.
We do actually have Survival of the fittest. The one

(16:58):
difference is that only one quarter back can play. Of course,
I mean there is a kid at Louisville who some
people think could play another position and could be unbelievable,
And it is a position that's got about a hit, right,
And if you're the Browns, you've been snake bitten before.

(17:20):
Do you go and get to seeing as one might
flame out but the other might be the real deal.
But more than anything, I don't think people have come
to understand what the word considered mean investigated me. You're
not doing your job if you don't consider every different
angle and possibility. It's it's so much like a chess game. Ramas,

(17:49):
do you play chess at all? I do not, And
I've never learned how to play chess. So that's quite interesting.
On my end um music, do you play chess? Ryan Music?
You play chess? I wouldn't say I actively play chess,
but I do know how and will from time to time. Yeah,
And and the thing about chess, and I would say
there are other games like this. I don't think as
much with with checkers chest because the pieces can move

(18:12):
in such different directions than one another. The thing about
chess which is fascinating is when you you know, you
take your hand off that chess piece after you move it,
all bets are off, right, there's no renegging on it,
there's no that's the end of the turn, right, that's
the end of the turn. But you have to look
at all possible options. You have to look at every
other every other piece on the board, because every piece

(18:36):
on the board is affected by your move yours and
your opponents. And some of this is about you know,
some of chess is about processing. You know, if you
play that speed chest, you're having to process this thing,
you know, uh, processing more quickly. But you have to
consider every possible move. Well, oh hey, hey, hold on,

(19:00):
you don't use your queen in the third move of
a game of chess. Now, what do you say is
you don't traditionally move your queen. Doesn't mean you move
your queen, but you look at if I move my
queen here, how does this affect everything else? I? Oh yeah,
By the way, what's to say that you don't draft

(19:21):
one hold on to him? Somebody has a quarterback go down,
and then all of a sudden you can get more
first round picks for your first round pick. The Denver
Broncos are actively shopping number five because people think they'll
be the fourth quarterback still hanging around at five. Let's
just say. The Cleveland Browns are like, we'll take them both.

(19:43):
And oh yeah, by the way, high draft picks does
not necessarily mean first round. They could take one that
that somebody that falls to the second round. I wouldn't
advise them to do it because they have Tyrod Taylor.
I wouldn't advise them to do it because it's going
to create a culture of one to which those guys
aren't gonna work together. It just doesn't work that way.

(20:04):
Human nature takes over. We talked about communism, I think
a little bit yesterday light right, like on paper, communism
sounds like a great idea what I can just go
work and not have to worry about anything else, and
everybody makes about the same and everybody gets taken care
of the same, and I can just go do my
job and be awesome my job. The problem is human nature.
It's like, hey, I'm better at what I'm doing that
he is. What I'm doing is more important, or what

(20:26):
I'm doing is more profitable. I should be making more money.
Human nature takes over. That's why communism works on paper,
doesn't work in reality. But you at least study it
and think about it and try and just just like
completely free capitalism doesn't work right and oh yeah, by
the way, if you're going to investigate it, you've got

(20:48):
to investigate the fact that the Washington Redskins, though on
paper it worked right on paper, they got a rookie
of the year who led them to the playoffs and
their fallback was a franchise caliber quarterback. On paper, at work,
the reality of it was that the that the top
pick was so popular with the owner at times with

(21:09):
the fans that he could never become popular in the
locker room and with the coaching staff. Meanwhile, the fourth
round pick always felt like he was the fourth round
pick treated like he was the fourth round pick. Hell,
they couldn't even pronounce his name. So even when you
elevated him the starting quarterback and gave him twenty plus
million dollars guaranteed as a franchise Taggi for two years,

(21:32):
he was still pissed. Of course it won't work, and
of course it's a it's a it's an idea that
you're going to pass on. But that doesn't mean you
shouldn't investigate the possibility of an idea, especially with the
weighted nature of the particular position in question in terms

(21:54):
of value. Just because it's the Browns doesn't make it
a bad idea, and just because you don't want to
do it doesn't make it a bad idea. What's a
bad idea is not investigating every idea and seeing how
how it looks on the chessboard. Just don't pull that

(22:16):
hand off the move. You know, the Patriots said the
same thing. Hey, we got the we have two first
round picks. We're thinking about taking two first round clips
like genius. Huh that I mean genius right, Belichick doesn't
know which one he likes. He takes them both late
first rounders. Genius the Cleveland Browns investigating that what we're

(22:41):
thinking of, we're thinking about it like idiots. New Brown's
wide receiver Jarvis Landry joins us in ten minutes. This
tax season, you're refund goes further at auto Zone thanks
to the free Loana to a program you can choose
from over a hundred especially tools that help you get
the job done right. So stop in to day getting
the zone on zones, bringing Dan Buyer, who is in

(23:01):
fact a genius. Far from it, far from it, by
the way. I think the other day when we were
talking about what LaMarcus Aldredge looked like, you know, and
I thought maybe it was reticent, was resigned, maybe the
kind of resigned to the fact that they weren't good enough.
Was that the word you were looking for. Okay, That's
what I thought and I and I realized it laying
in bed that night. I'm like resigned as he was

(23:24):
resigned to the facts. Anyway, The Spurs and Warriors are
playing tonight a much different field than what we've got
in the first two games of the series. Game three
tonight in San Antonio, Warriors up to well, they'll tip
it off at ninety Eastern time Spurs head coach Gregg
Popovitch not coaching tonight following the death of his wife Aaron.
Assistant a Toori Mussina will serve as the head coach

(23:44):
in place of pop this evening Sixers and heat seven
o'clock Eastern time. Joel Embiid remains doubtful for the game.
Blazers and Pelicans play their Game three in New Orleans
at nine o'clock Eastern time, comes taking it to the
Cards right now six to one, playing in the fourth
inning at Wrigley Well, it's all Tigers this afternoon up
twelve to six on the Orioles and the seventh. The
NFL releasing the regular season schedule tonight that comes up

(24:08):
at eight o'clock Eastern time. While the New York Giants
have done some releasing of their own, letting go of
wide receiver Brandon Marshall after just one season where he
played five games for the team. G M Dave Gentleman
today saying that Marshall failed as physical after suffering an
ankle injury this past season. H one of the notes
passed along Brian Price of the Reds fired today just

(24:28):
eighteen games into the season. Doug back to you because
Joey Vato stinks all of a sudden they got more
problem prices a guy that honestly, did I say Brian
Price was fired today? Would you have known who that was?
I didn't know who Brian Price was? Yes, but there
are there? Would you have ramas? Would you have known?
No music? Would you have known if I said Brian

(24:51):
Prices fire today? We have any idea who Brian Prices?
I think he's on the fence with it or he's
on the phone with Jarvis. Yeah, alright, we're trying to
connect with Jarvis slang. Appreciate that Dan, Dan Buyer joining
us top half past the hour, give us a game.
We're efforting Jarvis Slandr get to him hopefully momentarily. The
road ahead is bound. It takes money expected turns. Farmer's

just I heard the Brandon Marshall thing. Is interesting because
I like Brandon Marshall, and I think what Brandon Marshall

(25:35):
has done for in terms of bringing awareness to mental
healthcare in a sport like football is remarkable, really really remarkable.
But people who are correlating Brandon Marshall to Dez Bryant
as the same guy or I heard Colin Coward say like, look,
I'd rather have Brandon Marshall my team than than does Bryant.

(25:56):
Like dude calls somebody in the NFL. Brandon Marshall has
and this is not I'm not breaking any news. He
has multiple personality disorder. Now he's gone through therapy. I
believe he's medicated, and he at times is the best
version of himself, but that's just at times. In addition
to the fact that Brandon Marshall is washed, right, I

(26:20):
mean he was washed with the Jets two years ago.
He three years ago. He and Ryan Fitzpatrick had this
great year where you like they could rot out to
the sunset together. But I mean he's washed, and he
got hurt last year and he played five games and
he had eighteen catches and he's not does Bryant he is?
What if you were to sign des Briant to a

(26:42):
couple of year deal, what does Briant at thirty three
might look like that's four years away from now. Um.
So on one hand, I like Brandon Marshall. On the
other hand, like, look, Brandon Marshall, five NFL teams, five

(27:05):
NFL teams for a reason, just one of those guys
to which um, as much as he's figured out his
own mental health care, he still thinks he's figured out
everything in life and not beloved, not helping. He's You
can go one of two ways when you're a vet.

(27:25):
When you're a vet, you can I've seen it all,
I've done it all. I just want to be helpful.
Or you can be the clubhouse lawyer and say yeah, no,
I know more and I'm still better than these young guys.
And that's Brandon Marshall. I I don't think that means
you go out and get a des Bryant. But if
you could get a des Bryant to go along with

(27:45):
Sterling Shepard, to go along with Odell Beckham Jr. To
go along with a talented young tight end, dude, I
do think you do that. And I'm and I don't
love what does Brian is or where he thinks he is.
But for a team that lost all their wide receivers
last year to injury. That would be a hell of

(28:06):
a move. Hell of a move, it would be. It
would be a fascinating, fascinating watch to see that thing,
to to see that thing go down, wouldn't it. I mean,
you got Evan Ingram along with Sterling Shepard and Odell
Beckham Jr. Who and I don't love Dez Bryant as

(28:27):
a number one, but as the number two and the
number two who's number three is really good? It's not
bad um. And Brandon Marshall is one of those guys
that when the red light is on in front of
the camera, he's incredible. He's fantastic. But he doesn't It
doesn't always translate in the locker room. It doesn't I'm

(28:50):
interested in in um. Paul Schwarz, who covers the team, says,
as far as the Giants cutting Brandon Marshall make room
for Des Bryan, don't you hold your breath on that one.
Remember Dave gettlman in charge. Gentleman's the guy who got
rid of D'Angelo Williams who joins us during the football
season and Steve Smith and still went to a Super

(29:11):
Bowl without both of those guys. So he's a guy
who's going to He's already dealing with one massive ego.
I'm just saying, in terms of players, not a crazy idea,
but a lot like the Cleveland Brown's idea. That Cleveland
Brown's idea of, hey should we should we draft two
quarterbacks early in this draft? That sounds like a crazy
idea investigated. Same thing with with with Dez Bryant. Investigated

(29:36):
and when the answer comes up like not really worth it.
He wants too much money. He wants to be at
number one. You know, I also don't thank you if
you're DEAs you don't just go somewhere because they play
the Cowboys twice a year. Yes, Ryan Music, what do
you got? Cap wise? I'm not sure if it works out,

(29:56):
especially because the Rams are trying to work out things
with Aaron On all the other players. But everything they've
done in the off season, doesn't it just sound like
the Rams are going to somehow find a way to
get Dez Bryant because they're in there there in that
like just acquire anyone who's talented type of phase right now?
Um yeah, except for except for like do they have

(30:20):
space for him? Remember they still have Tavon Austin that
they've been trying to get rid of that. Nobody wants
to stick on that contract. So yeah, yes, in terms
of give me you're tired, your poor, your wretched weak,
you're wretched masses whatever it says in the Statute of Liberty, Yes,
the premise of what you're saying makes complete sense, complete sense.

(30:42):
But but I don't I don't think the reality of
it is that after they vet him, they go like, hey,
we've got enough problems as it is. Look at their
look at their roster as of now, and you can
see you remember they still have Robert Woods. Uh, they
have Coop er Cup, they have Tavon Austin, they have

(31:02):
Brandon Cooks, Uh, they have they got a kid named
Josh Reynolds who's a young, taller wide receiver, another kid
named Michael Thomas, a young, taller wide receiver. Like I
just I'm not sure I see it. I think they
have their number one and their number two, you know,
and Cooks is a guy who could take the top
off of defense, and Tavon Austin is really a slot

(31:24):
guy who they're going to try and figure out some
way to jettison him. So yes, I mean they've taken
everybody else's personality disorder a guy, but I don't see
it happening. After a big win last night. Are the
Calves the team to beat in the Eastern Conference? I'll
tell you next. Doug O leave show Fox Sports ready

(31:49):
is at three time pro bowler. He'll return home to St.
James Parish in Louisiana for a day of giving back
at a local youth at Lucer High School. The event
will feature football drills, private workout sessions, catered lunch and
backpack giveaway, school supplies, etcetera. Jarvis Landry is our guests.
Will also be presenting one senior at the high school

(32:10):
with the five thousand hour check, the recipient of the
Jarvis Landry Building Winners Scholarship. Jarvis, thanks so much for
taking time out of your busy day. This is the
fourth annual give back event on the was that the
twentieth of July that that you're gonna hold uh? When
it when it first started? What? How how did you
get this idea? Preston takes having me on, Doug um man,

(32:36):
it just came from you know, my whole inspiration of
just you know, giving back and trying to be um
you know somebody that you know people look up to
and I know for me as a kid, I didn't
have a lot of people come back and uh was
real hands on, you know. And that's one thing that UM,
I probased myself that you know, reaching my dream and
I'll be able to come back and do um. So

(32:59):
you know that was part of the all right, So
what now that you've had a chance, there's kind of
some distance between you and Miami. What what are your
feelings like on your time spent with the Miami Dolphins.
Um Man, you know what, you know, I love the fans,
I love the the culture. UM. But you know, forwards,

(33:21):
my my, my feelers about you know, the Dolphins and organizations. UM.
But honestly, just put that in the past and put
that behind me and I'm just so far and looking
and starting my new journey here in Cleveland, you know. UM.
And that's really been my biggest, biggest, biggest concern and
you know, the biggest thing I've been um moving forward
for me. Yeah, but I mean, like still there there's

(33:43):
this thought and I know Tannehill getting hurt last year
obviously damaged it and uh some of that was an
injury which probably suffered the year before, but you had
big name, talented guys. Uh. It seemed like a playoff
spot was there for the taking. Why didn't it work?
It just didn't. You know, both sides didn't agree. Um,

(34:05):
and you know, UM, honestly, man, it was it was
you know, the more you go in another directions, you
know me just honestly want to go in another directions,
UM and um finding the way to part ways, um
and do with best for both sides. All right. The

(34:27):
good news is you get the money you want, the
contract you want, the respect you want. The bad news
is it's the Browns man, Right, it's the Browns and right, well, no,
but I'm saying perception wise, right, perception wise like you
can't tell me in Cleveland, like you were said, they're going, man,
the Browns. They just can't figure it out. When when
you said you ready for a fresh start, and they're like,

(34:48):
all right, the Browns, what was your honest reaction at
the time. Let's change the narrative. You know, I feel like,
you know, just like you said, the Browns man, and
you know, like it's a sad place, so it's the
wrong place to be, you know, obviously understanding, Um, the
past couple of years and what it's been like here

(35:09):
for execut wise, but also understanding the culture in the
history here. You know, these friends have been dying, um
for for winning football team, you know, and the deserver
you know, just me being here for the last two
weeks and running into so many people who are lifelong
Cleveland Planers and you know, regardless of the weather, regardless
of um only fifteen, only six huns, still showing up

(35:32):
to the game to support their team, you know, And
that's something that UM, I take tide in, you know,
I take pride in that. So for me being here,
it's changing the narrative, changing the perspective, making this a
destination that people are gonna come, making it a jersey,
making a jerseys and and the colors of Cleveland Brown, Um,
of the Cleveland Brown uniform to be want to be worn,

(35:54):
you know, and be proud, and that's what I'm here
to do, you know, And all the other stuff is
in the past, and it's just stay there. Just ain't
the same team, just sain't the same thing parents that
um that the world knows Cleveland Brown's as this is
not that, and it won't be Jarvis Landry joining us
on the Dug Gotlip Show. Um, you recently stated that

(36:14):
you're giving up at least for a year on recruiting
O b J to come join you, you you know, one
of your closest friends in the sport. When you first
reached out via Twitter to try and recruit him, Like, look,
you guys are boys. You can text him anytime you want.
So putting out public that you're recruiting him, what what
was What was his reaction when you did so? Uh,

(36:35):
you know it was it seems it was. It was cool.
You know, he laughed about it or whatever, and you
know considered it. You know, obviously he said that the
money right, you know. But um, honestly, man, again, I
wish i'd say good of the deserts um regardless of
who they are and what position they play. So um,
for me, I just want to win, and I want

(36:56):
to put all the pieces together, for all the pieces
around myself and other guys here, and please me to
make sure that we can do that, right Tyrod? Yesterday
you know they came out and say, hey, ty Rod's
gonna be our starting quarterback regardless of who we draft.
But that still is that still is awkward, right, Like Tyrod,
of course, led the Bills to the playoffs last year,
first time and forever they've been in the playoffs. But

(37:18):
they're going to draft somebody who's going to ultimately replace him.
What's it been like in terms of navigating the minefield
of Hey, I'm here to play with Tyrod, but I
also got to get excited about whoever we draft. I've
been in situations I have. I've played with six different
quarterbacks in Miami, you know, and it still hasn't changed

(37:39):
the result on the outcome of my performance. So I'm
excited about Tyrode. I'm excited about his future here, um,
you know. And we've been working together, we've been throwing together,
you know, regardless of who gives drafted um a quarterback
or not. You know, I'm excited to call him a
new teammate, UM and n be a part of the

(38:00):
clevesand Brown And when it's his turn, I'm sure he
would be ready. And that's not to me to make
that decision. That's up Compleveland Brown and from now, from
as it looks, it's gonna be Tyler. And I'm excited
about that. So I just raised around with it, all right,
You got you got the new contract. Anything special you're
gonna do with the outside of this incredible event where
you're gonna give a five scholarship, you have an entire day.

(38:21):
This is something you're doing for four years now that
you got Now that you got life changing money, what
are you gonna do the same thing? Man contee the inspired,
continue to motivate people, you know, continue to be available
for people. You know. One of my goals is also
the win to watch the pay Man in the year war.
And you know, I'm going to focus on that as
long as and as well as wein games. You know.

(38:42):
So for me is getting into the community here in
pleasing you know, touching lives all the way around the world. Um,
you know, raising money for different things, different events, also
support system proposis. So having the opportunity to complete a
way to raise awareness about that. It's something that is
really passionate to me, you know. So um, you know,
and that's something that you know, you can't really put

(39:03):
a price on or you can't really put money too.
You know, it's the time and the love and you know, uh,
in the communication and awareness, like I said about these
issues that we were spaced with, you know, of Society.
Jarvis Landry's fourth annual giveback event is the twentie of July.
It's in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, St. James Parish.

(39:25):
Check it out at Lutra High School. Jarvis, congrats on
the new deal and uh and the new town. We
really appreciate you joining us in the dug out lip show.
Thank you, alright, Pleasures, pleasures all mine. Young dude, talented
dude has obviously understands like a little bit of minefield
there right, Like I love Tyrod Taylor who were drafting.
I love him too. Wouldn't you love a bigger tax refund?

(39:47):
Tax Layers the highest rated for maximum refund so you
can spend more cash on whatever the heck you want
to spend it on this tax season. Go out and
slay it. Max a refund at tax layer dot com. Alright, so, uh,
Brandon Marshall, Brandon Marshall, thanks for dropping the beats. I
appreciate that. Romo's Brandon Marshall gets cut. Today the Denver

(40:08):
Broncos announced the number five pick. Hey, it's it's it's
it's up to the highest bidder. I'll tell you what
kind of that translates to up coming next hour. Lebron
James is awesome. But if he's any less than awesome,
less than any less than incredible, do the Calves win.
We still got to get into the thunder like man.

(40:29):
We went from Paul George staying in Oklahoma City to
Paul George get on the next jet out of town.
But up next, what does Ronald Jones think about playing
with Sam Donald? Find out next? What up Doug Otlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're having a great day.

(40:50):
I hope you got your taxes in on time. Our
folks attack Slayer of course, reminding you, like, look you
can file. You file your taxes late. People, I'm like,
don't get me wrong, like you had an extra day,
but you can still file them. Like get that thing
done online. Car shop and can be confusing, not anymore.
With True Price from True Car. Now you can know
the exact price you'll pay for your next car. It's
a bit True Car. Visit True Card and enjoy more

(41:12):
confident car buying experience. Um a week from today on
Fox and the NFL Network, the NFL Draft. Pretty cool,
pretty cool, right like at the end of at the
end of it, we kind of revert back to the
start of it, meaning, you know, look, this will outrate

(41:33):
many almost every regular season college football game, like noon
college football game that many people care about it. But
this is like a huge playground and you want to
be selected, and you don't want to be you you don't
want to be Mr. Relevant, You want to be the
last guy picked, but you want to be picked high.
We especially want to be picked by other guys to
play the same position as you do. This is as

(41:56):
deep a running back class as many people can remember.
Uh is Daris Jus of l s U. There Sonny
Michelle and Nick Chubb from Georgia, carry On Johnson from Auburn,
rashand Penny that's the Sandy State kid, Royce Freeman really
talented of Oregon n C States, and I'm Haynes. And
then of course there's say Kwan Barkley, but a guy

(42:17):
who many people believe is as talented as any of them,
including say Kwan Barkley's Ronald Jones the second he had
fifteen or yards rushing nineteen touchdowns in two thousand and seventeen.
Where's the third team All American um and he's gonna
wait to hear when his name is called, and i'm
I'm I'm fascinated by Ronald Jones of USC joins us

(42:40):
on the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
you pulled your hamstring at the combine. I'm fascinated by
the You know, look, all you do is you the combine.
You don't necessarily need it to run your forty time there,
but you do it so you show that you you're
not scared. You always improve on it on your pro day.
What that like to to work on your body, to

(43:02):
work on you know, your start, to work on your
stride and everything it takes to run a grade forty
going to play your hammy. Yeah, I mean it was
definitely frustrating for me. You know, I started at an
exos then uh, after the combat, I went to gsp
out in Atlanta working with coach Williams, and yeah, you
know that definitely got me right, you know, doing the
software therapy and just just grinding, you know, getting back

(43:24):
like you said, because I had like three weeks in between.
The combine is in my pro day and I still
wasn't ready by then, and so I had to have
the second pro day while I ran it four four. Yeah,
and so then then then you put up before four
and you're nodding your head. Um, how much does that
change things in terms of what your agent tells you,
what teams are telling you once you finally put up

(43:45):
that number, Um, yeah, definitely. You know it gave them,
you know, a benchmark. You know that knew that I was,
you know, a speed guy, you know, primarily, so it
was good just to have that number, you know, better
than the four six at the comboinet. But yeah, it's
definitely frustrating. Sam Sam Sam flu Back made a special tray.

(44:05):
Every making a big deal, but the Sam flu Back
just to throw to you at your combine. What was
the conversation like, was like was this a big thing?
Did you reach out to him? Did he instinctively knew?
Like how did it happen that that Sam was somewhere else?
I think he was visiting Cleveland and he came back
to take me through that process? Yeah, so it was
like it was real last minute and I hadn't you know,
I texted him and stuff, but my agent, uh reached

(44:28):
out to his agent to make sure and make sure
that he was gonna be in and time all that
flight so they picked him up literally that morning and
he was there seven o'clock, you know, as if it
was his workout. So that's just you know, credit to
him and how much he cares about his teammates and
the relationship that we have. Is that the real Sam Donald?
I mean sometimes we as media members, we can get
snowed by guys, right, we can get guys who when

(44:48):
the red lights on that one guy and then when
the with the fellas that by themselves, they're a different guy.
Is that what he's really like? Yeah? That that's that's
the real film. And uh, you know, you know he's
a leader on the team and always has been the
competitor and yeah, I mean he'll do anything is for us,
like you know he did there. Uh Stug got the
show Fox Sports Radio. Are you tired of talking about him? Though? Like, like, hey,

(45:10):
can we talk about me? Because I'm gonna be drafted
high too, you know. I mean that's that's why you know,
I don't even trip, you know, if he's gonna be
the number one pick, you know, the best quarterback in
the draft, you know, in my opinion, and we compliment
with each other. You know, he saved me in games
and there are times where I were in the ball
you know, the clock out and stuff like that. So yeah,
that's that's that's my dogs for life. Oh I I understand.

(45:33):
So do you you got any inside information for us, like,
do you know, do we we can do the breaking
news thing that he's going numbering overall? Yeah? I mean
I don't know any more than than what your guys
know because I don't even know where I'm going yet,
so uh yeah, We're just gonna have to wait and
see that night. I'll be watching the front and center
because uh yeah, he'll be in Texas. Uh yeah, I
think he's going to the draft. That would be good.

(45:53):
Um okay, So as far as where you're going, how
important is it where you go and how important is
it how how you go? Because we've even Rosen's cut
caught some heat because he's like, look at Anham Burtnehill
high Igo, it's more about fit for you personally. What's
level of importance? Well, yeah, you know, you definitely want
to go as high as possible, you know, not believe
I half first round talent and all that, so uh

(46:16):
you know, just it just comes down to the team
and you know what they believe they need and topping
in with Bostin. So yeah, I guess, you know, I
can kind of agree with that. It's more so the fit,
not necessarily the position all the song. So when you're
meeting with teams, has anybody brought up something You're like,
damn you you knew about that? Oh? Uh yeah, you
know they just bring him, you know, injury history. And

(46:38):
then uh, there's a situation where you know, I didn't
travel with the team for the cow game, so that
you know, they just asked you about that. But yeah,
I didn't get too many crazy questions like some other guys.
I don't even necessarily mean crazy questions, just the idea
of the thoroughness of the researcher's like damn, I yeah, yes,
my junior year in high school, Yes I dated China,
Yes you got me. Okay, I'm sorry I did anything

(47:00):
like that. Yeah, it was nothing like that too crazy. Uh,
they just they didn't know about you know how it
was referred to the Sam Sampson with my hair and
cutting the dreads. You know, they kept asking me, you know,
why you cut your dreadline stuff like that, But uh, yeah,
it was nothing too too deep that they dug up,
how important in their evaluation is you know, like I

(47:22):
think all of us, all of us think, well, you know,
look when Ronald Jones gets the ball, you know he
handed the ball. It's lightning in a bottle, right, Plus
you can catch the football as well. But how important
when when you sit down with them, how important is
their evaluation of you as a as a pass blocker? Yeah,
it's very important, you know, Like visiting with these teams.
You know, obviously the quarterback is you know, the centerpiece

(47:44):
of the whole franchise. So you know, they asked me
about that. You know, I tell him, you know, I'm
still adding weight and you can always use uh work
with technique and stuff like that. So uh yeah, I
think they're pretty confident, you know in that aspect. And
whoever picks me up, you know, I'll be willing to
improving that area as well. Ronald and joining us in
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. It's
in your home state of Texas. You're from McKinney, Texas.

(48:05):
You're going home, you're staying so cat, what are you
doing for the draft? Oh? Yeah, you know, I'm gonna
be in Texas. Man. Uh I'm gonna have a party
of Husbs barbecue my friend family's friend day on that place.
So I'll just have a small gathering with a friendly
in front of do you wait, you want to wait?
Hudson's Barbecue? Is that one was? Yeah? Hussons Barbaracuis and
McKinney actually so, uh. But I actually be at the

(48:26):
first Goal location that night, but yet a doubt. The
draft is in Alysen about thirty minutes away. No, no,
I I know, I know, I know Texas well enough.
People giving you a shout out, beeping you on your horn,
Ronald Jones, Jonas and the Dug guys. Well you're not
keeping it really, You're not going to the hometown said
you're going to Friscoale. Well yeah, yeah, it's gonna be okay.

(48:47):
So you're so are you going ribs? Are you going
pulled pork? Are you going chicken? How are you gonna? Yeah? Okay?
And and how now is it brisket when you when
they cut it up? But it's brown inside right, like
it's tender and it's red. Oh yeah, it's tender. Yeah,
it's it's it's real greasy. Uh. And then the Hallapeeno
setter sauces. Do you put barbecue sauce on it? You

(49:10):
just go straight meat? Oh yeah, barbecues on that. They
got hot and spicy, so you know, I put that
on the sandwich. Two meets down and something like that.
Some some Texas. Some Texas toasts on the side to
to mop it all up. I heard you're a sweet
sauce guy, though. I just this is all the research
I've been doing. They said he doesn't really like the hot,
spicy sauce. He likes the sweet sauce. True or not true? Uh? Yeah,

(49:33):
I said that's true. You know, I like barbecue wings
and stuff. You know, Yeah, it just depends on the day.
Ronald Ronald Jones. Jones is on The Doug Gotlip Show
on Fox Sports Tradio. It's a day to which look,
anybody who grows up playing a sport dreams of having
their name called obviously a dreams scoring your first touchdown,
playing the Super Bowl, playing pro ball, all those other things.

(49:55):
When you close your eyes and you and you're getting
close to being able to feel it, what's that? What
team do you do you? When you close your eyes
and you and you think, what team do you think about? Uh? Yeah,
I mean yeah, I grew up with cowboy you know, I,
you know whatever, seeing college and give it an opportunity. That's,

(50:16):
you know, the values that we don't have a way
to see. All right, well listen, safe travels to McKinney, Texas.
We really appreciate you joined us, and best of luck
next Thursday or Friday or whenever you're selected. We know
you put in some work in the nash Football League.
Appreciate you join us. On Fox Sports Radio, Yes all
things for having pleasures mind. Ronald Jones join us and

(50:36):
the Doug Gotlips Show. The Road Ahead is bound, takes money,
expect turns. Farmers Insurance can help you understand your coverage
options with our practical knowledge game. For more than ninety
years of experience, we know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. Find agentet Farmers dot com.
Are see that's the problem, Like um buyers from Wisconsin.

(50:58):
So I feel like, by I hate to I'm not
gonna like stereotype or whatever, but I'm gonna stereotype a
little bit. I do feel like there's a lot more
grilling that goes on in Wisconsin then barbecuing goes on
in Wisconsin. Is that is that a fair Yeah, that's
that's a very fair assumption. Okay, um, but you do
who doesn't enjoy good? If you go to a barbecue joint,

(51:20):
what's your order? Well, I like like brisket, just like
Ronald Jones does. Um, you know, if they have burn ends,
I have to go burn ends. But I have been
on a pulled pork kick as of late, so above all,
I would say, probably pulled pork. There's nothing good as
good as pulled pork. My my wife makes pulled pork,

(51:42):
like in a crock pot. I'm like, what what what
are you? What are you doing? Like, let's go put
it out on our green egg. Let's go. You know, Oh,
it's so much easier. Like's not I need to be rewarded.
And I like that that outer crust being a little
bit burnt and then you open it up and I
was incredible. I was on a ribs like brisket alternate
because you can get okay, ribs, you know, pork one night,
you know, baby backs, and then maybe the next week

(52:03):
if we're going out again, all right, I'll have some brisket.
But then I just went just it's been it's been
pulled pork A lot your your sides for barbecue or what. Well,
I'm I'm kind of a little finicky with that, so
I I mean I'll usually just have some sort of
potato and hopefully corn bread. I'm not a big mac
and cheese or potato salad guy. Okay, yeah, it depends

(52:24):
on how far south. You know. You can also go
to some some some color greens, which which I enjoy.
Green Beans obviously kind of a staple so too, so
too is mac and cheese. Um ramos. Now what about
you when you get down some barbecue, give me the order.
I like ribs, short ribs with cold slam a big
cole slag g Yeah yep, um, sweet sauce or spicy sauce, no, spicy,

(52:47):
definitely sweet. Yes, you're definitely a sweet sauce kind of
a kind of guy. I was. I was teasing Rold
Jones a little bit. Turns out I was accurate. Music
music grew up in the valley, which yes, yeah, I mean,
like I need to take music to the south, like
he will get try tip, Yeah, yeah, try to San
Luis Obispo. You walk into a barbecue place and somewhere

(53:07):
they actually serve sweet tea, and what do you order? Uh,
So I I like, uh pulled pork as well, or
I will do brisket. Uh nice chopped brisket is good.
Otherwise I'm not a big I'm not big on the ribs.
That's the one thing where ribs aren't really very rarely
will I sit down and go I'm in the mood
for some ribs, But I will Also, I do like

(53:29):
the maybe maybe you haven't had the right ones yet,
you know, I mean, like, look, part of it is
you just you grew up sheltered, You grew up in
a childhood to where uh you just you didn't have it.
So once you go to you get dry rub in Memphis,
or you kind of get there's other place you can
get more. You know, you get some that vinegar mixed
in when you're in in the Carolina's, or you get

(53:49):
more saucy type stuff when you're in St. Louis as Uh.
With beef ribs, you just you have to know the
place of the country and you have to get the
right we find the right ribs for your right palette.
Me Like, I I love a big good meat plate.
I just I love the idea of walking in true carnivore.
Like sausage, yes, I totally agree with Ronald Jones. Sausage. Yes.

(54:11):
I'm not big on brisket because most people overcook the brisket.
I like the brisket, as he said, really greasy, really juicy.
If I do that pulled pork, yes, ribs, yes, some
sauce and if I have to, If I have to
skimp on anything, it'll be on the sides. I agree
with you a buyer on the corn bread, just mop
it all up. I know some people go, you know
that that Texas toast to mop it up. I'm not.

(54:33):
It's not like I'll turn it down, but I'd prefer

night in the NBA. Interesting night, James Harden can't buy
a bucket, and the Rockets still win by twenty still
win by twenty um and then of course Oklahoma City,
their big three can't buy a bucket. They lose at
a home to the Utah Jazz and get lit up
by a rookie who has a bad foot. Then you've

(57:07):
got Cleveland who who won. But look, if if Lebron doesn't,
it doesn't. Lebron doesn't give us peak Lebron from the
jump ball. They don't win that game, and Victor Ladipo's
in foul trouble and he misses an open three down
three like I'm I'm fascinated by what. Baron Davis, who's
a two time All Star. Of course, you'll see him

(57:28):
in the Big Three this summer. He joins us on
The Doug Gotlip Show here on on Fox Sports Radio. UH.

hosted by Baron Davis. Episodes with b d with Kyle Kuzma,
Joel Ebid, Dennis Smith Jr. There's also some additional episodes

within Beating Dennis Smith Jr. That will be released next week.
Stay tuned to the NBA and Mountain Dew with their
social channels. Baron Davis joins us on Fox Sports Radio. UM,
By the way, your relationship them beat? Is he playing toning? Uh?
You know that's classified information. Man, the process from me

(58:09):
on this stage, he said, don't don't, don't give up
no classified them. So all right, let let's say what
we saw last night. Like, look, Lebron can say, you know,
I didn't say that I would be more aggressive. That
was Tylu, But from the jump ball he was different.
He's like, look, I I gotta go put up for you.
That's that's what he did. But I look around and like, yeah,

(58:31):
I just don't know if they can live and die
with that, even against the Pacers, let alone the Raptors
or the Sixers. Is it impressive or more depressing that
he has to do this nerd for them to win. Um,
I wouldn't say it's depressing. You gotta look at Cleveland
as this is a difference Cleveland scene, right, so they

(58:54):
have a different their aligne differently, the chemistry is differently,
they're veteran situation and as different certain guys who who
played three years ago when they were making their runs
don't play as much, aren't as valuable, and said, now
you also have an influx of young guys with Clarkson
and Man's um hood. Uh even you know George Sangin

(59:19):
and back back to the getting back to the playoffs.
But on the new team, you've got all these new guys.
And so for Lebron, I think it's important for him
to set that precedes and dominate the game, especially in
the first series because Indiana it's probably um a match
up that that gives them. There, you know that's gonna

(59:41):
be their best test. Why is that? What? What is
it about the Indiana matchup that that challenges them? Because
Indiana has um, they have a height advantage, and then
they also have a quickness advantage, and so when you
look at you know, playing for player position by position,
they're a little stronger, faster, and more athletic than the

(01:00:01):
Cleveland Cavaliers. And not only that, they can get hot
and and shoot the three balls just as well as Cleveland.
So when you're thinking about matchups and positions and things
like that, uh, Cleveland. When Cleveland looks at the opposing player,
that guy has the potential of keeping up. What's going

(01:00:23):
on with the Wizards? I mean, they struggled so much
when john Wall returned, and there was this sense that
maybe they enjoyed playing without john Wall, but like I mean,
john Wall is an incredible talent. And then they just
get blown out in game two after being at least
competitive in game one. What's your sense with what's amiss
with the Wizards? Well, I wouldn't come with the Wizards

(01:00:43):
sound um, you know the playoffs and then started to
somebody actually, uh, he loses on the course, so they
have an opportunity to serve on their home school, Um,
get their thing back. I think in game one they
had an opportunity to win, and um, they just the
chemistry wasn't right. They didn't Um, they didn't make the

(01:01:05):
right reason and and make the right sacrifices defensively to
make that a longer game. In game one, game two,
I think they just kind of let the game get
away from him and it's and now they have an
opportunity to serve women at home floor. So you know,
they go out and then game three than you know,
game four so much more important. But you know, the

(01:01:26):
momentum shifts because they have the home floor, So you know,
I wouldn't necessarily count them out. I think John Wall
has uh similar effective of of of a lebron for
his team. If he goes out with the mentality of hey,
I'm gonna dominate, he is uh he can dominate the
game more than anyone on either side of the ball

(01:01:47):
Baron Davis joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show Here,
that's the guy who used to dominate games in high school,
in college, in the NBA, an All Star a couple
of times over join us. You can see him on
the Big Three. Of course, you can see his work
with the Mountain Do in their social content. Outstanding stuff
that you have to see. Would you all and be
kal Kuzma. Uh, Guys like Dennis Smith Jr. And others. Um,

(01:02:09):
Okay Oklaoma City Game one, all of a sudden, there's
this thing called playoff, playoff Paul Pierce playing Paul Paul Pire, Sorry,
playoff Paul George. And then and then last night it
was bad right, none of mellow can't get a step anymore,
not making contested jump shots. Russell misses some shots and
some drives he usually makes PG couldn't make shots. Um,

(01:02:31):
what's your sense of that series? You said, you know,
the NBA Old Adages series doesn't start until the road
team wins a game. That's exactly what happened. Can Oklahoma
City survive? And now we have a series? I would
say that series to me is uh one of the
most interesting series, uh, as well as the New Orleans

(01:02:54):
Portman's series. I thought the West was gonna be extremely
disruptive because of the match ups. Um, and I think
that Okay, see, you know they have the talent, but
also Utah, you know they're very well coached. Right. I
don't think Quinn Snyder just enough credit as the coach. Um.
I think Donovan Mitchell is an excellent rookie and not

(01:03:16):
only a rising star, but a star. And he's cementing himself.
Uh and then and I think the biggest problem for
okay see is you know Rudy Gobert and you know,
once again you start looking at matchups. Utah has the
high versatility, you know, um to match up with an

(01:03:41):
okay see. And so you know, when you start looking
at clear cut advantages and you start looking at spacing
on the floor, and you got Goobert out there and
favors Utah makes you play their their style of ball,
and so if you fall into their hands, then they're
gonna have an advantage and the pace of the game
is gonna favor this. So you know, with Russ, we

(01:04:02):
know he's a dominating player. Paul Paul George, you know
he's a explosive scorer. But I think for okay See,
it's really about the energy that the other guys bring
to the table, and not so much from an offensive
standpoint of making shots, but just an energy, you know,
the plush and rebounds sorr As his block shot, because

(01:04:23):
that's gonna that's gonna give Mellow and guys like that
freedom to get those easy stuffs. All right. My my,
my late father used to say two best high school
guards that he saw in his thirty plus years of
coaching au ball in southern California, were you and were
Drew Drew Holiday. So like, I think all of us
knew Drew had had had this in him, But it

(01:04:46):
feels like, you know, Rondo allows him to play a
little bit more free and not having DeMarcus Cousins opens
up the lane a bunch, Like, what what's your feelings
on why we're seeing the best of Drew against Damian
Lillard and the Trailblaze. Well, I think you know one, uh,
there's a great point about Rhonda um is you know,

(01:05:07):
playing with a guy like Rondell Drew. Drew is a
combination guard. And when you go back to him and
his days the u c l A, he was effective
as a combination guard. And I think in the league
they tried to turn him into a point guard, and
earlier in his career, the league wasn't ready for a
scoring point guard. And so now as he's matured, you know,

(01:05:31):
he he's realized that a lot of these guys he's
played against in college and high school and he's just
as talented. And we all know that he's at a talent.
But I think Alvin gentry one as a coach another
another coach doing a great job this year minus DeMarcus Cousins.
You know, uh, who could have been you know who
was having a better year than Anthony Davis at a

(01:05:54):
certain point, you know, he recognized this guy's talent and
starting to work the offer him, knowing that Anthony Davis
made at that second school baron Davis joining us on
the Doug Gotlip Show. All right, Uh, end of the day,
I'm not sure does this matter? Like it feels like
the Warriors are starting to figure some stuff out and

(01:06:14):
they you know, Pop Unfortunately he's not going to coach
tonight because the death of his wife. Like they have
that series pretty well under control, especially without Kauai playing.
Um Warriors healthy against the Rockets? Is it still a rap?
Is it's still the Warriors? Or do you think the
Rockets have a shot? Um? You know, I think you know, uh,

(01:06:36):
are you still the Rockets? Do the Rockets have a shot?
I don't think the Spurs have a shot unless I'm wrong. Yeah,
I mean I would say, you know you still got
you tell disrespect the fact that you know they have
to get past other teams. Uh, and they have to
finish out there around. So we all know right now

(01:06:57):
that the two best teams in RUSS all the Warriors,
defend the chance in the Rockeys the number one seed
and they're playing the best basketball. Let's uh, let's hope
we see that in the West of Confidence. Find us

the first hour of the show, we'll do. Now, let's
play a game. Okay, this is game time, Game side
on the Doug gott Leave Show. All right, Dan Byer,
what's the game today? The game today is Okay, guess who, well,

(01:09:51):
guess who Doug is the betting favorite to win the
NBA's Eastern Conference, according to Bovada, the Toronto Raptors. But
most notably, it's the first time since two thousand nine
that Lebron and his team aren't the favorite to win

(01:10:13):
the conference. Raptors is five to four odds right now,
Cavaliers eight to five odds to capture the East. Interesting
that would you bet on the Raptors? You're gonna been
on one team? Who'd you been on? I'd bet on
the Raptors. I don't think the Calves are gonna win
this series, so I would take them out of the equation.
I think Boston Phillies second round if it gets to

(01:10:34):
that would be intriguing. But hey, the the Raptors have
answered the bell in their first two games, especially in
the second game. The answered the bell something about him.
I just can't you know, I'm I can't. I can't
believe it until I see it, sort of guy music.
Who would you been on? You've been on one? Whould

(01:10:55):
you been on? I would still bet on the Calves Ramas, Yeah,
the Calves. Raptors are too miss hit and miss m
I think we're all to we wait to it to
believe until we see it anyway. Alright, what else we've
got this? Guess who could miss all of next season
because of an injury suffered during this past NBA regular season.

(01:11:19):
Who suffered a bad NBA injury during the NBA Uh,
DeMarcus Cousins close Chris Stops Porzingis of the Knicks. Yes,
Nick's owner James Dolan says he's been given multiple time
frames on porzingiss return could be in December, he said,

(01:11:40):
could also be missing all of the nineteen season is.
Dolan explained they have to try to build up a
better supporting cast around Porzingis because they don't even know
if they're gonna have him next year. That's crazy. How what?
What's why is a bone bruise? When he also think
of this, it happened in February. If the Knicks are awful,

(01:12:03):
you know next year halfway through, you get to December,
in January, why don't you just sit him? Yeah? Exactly,
So there could be that aspect of it as well. Yeah,
I I think I would guess what they're trying to do.
I guess what they're trying to do is not put
any pressure on him at all. And that way they
don't have to, you know, that doesn't have to be one.

(01:12:24):
And if he's, if he's if he's not ready until February,
it's not ready until January, and they're bad. But I
think the big thing is they just don't want to
put any pressure on him. But man um ten and
twelve months time frame, he tore his a c L
and he's going to spend most of the summer at home.
M hmm, Yeah, that seems like a long time for

(01:12:47):
a knee, does it does? Those are the words of
one James Dolan. I guess who has the worst record
in all of baseball and fired their manager today? Since then? Yes,
Brian price Out there three and five teen. I don't
even know that was possible, but they are. They're awful.
Brian price Out never had a winning season in his
four full seasons, now out eighteen games into his fifth season.

(01:13:11):
What happened to Joey Vado? I don't know what happened.
What happened to the Reds period? I follow some Reds
fans on Twitter, and you know, a lot of baseball
teams have a lot of hope coming into the season.
The Reds weren't one of them. Well, they're also it's
one thing to be bad. It's one thing to be
three and fifteen something to be one in seven at home,

(01:13:32):
one in seven at home. Right, So it's like, and
we're terrible already. Um, you know Joey Vado hitting two eight?
How many other since Nanny Reds can you name? Billy
Hamilton's is the only other guy people can name. And
Billy Hamilton's though he steals a ton of bases last
time I checked here, I I thought when I saw

(01:13:52):
this story, I thought I looked and he was hitting
like one seventy two. So you can go on base
percentage all you want. It's like two eight four. This
is on base percentage. I think I can name three
Cincinnati Reds. The only other since they read I can
I can name is Homer Bailey. I just it's because
I love the fact that he's a picture named Homer. Hey,

(01:14:14):
I don't know any other picture that they have. I
was going to say, Doug, name those Reds, just like
you would name that tune. Yeah. I think he's He's
at a tough start, hasn't he. I have to admit
I haven't followed I haven't followed Red's baseball but yeah,
nobody does. So Yeah, I guess he's all right. Three
point four to e r A. Um. Guess which college

(01:14:35):
marquee college football programs Doug scheduled at home and home
series against each other ten years from now. I saw
this Notre Dame in Alabama. Yes, get your tickets ready, game,
want to be in South Bend in that season. They'll
then kick off the nine season in Tuscaloosa. I like it. Alabama.

(01:14:57):
They don't like to go out and play true road
games against programs. At least they're doing that instead of
playing years years. All right, something looking forward to I
remember in Ohio State in Oklahoma had that agreement and
it was like, wow, that's gonna be awesome. And guess
what it already happened. You know, time to move on.
Time flies when you're loving college football. Um, how about

(01:15:17):
this one, Doug. Guess what NFL team in Florida did
not unveil a change to their uniforms for next season today?
Did not? Yes? Did not? What NFL team in the Darts, No, No,
the Dolphins did. It's the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins
updating their orange. They also took the marine blue out
of their uniforms and the Jaguars unveiling their new black

(01:15:40):
helmets that are yeah, I guess are old again, not
going with the Matt finish, going with the high gloss
and an all Tel alternate alternate uniform as well US.
And that's and that's the that's the game time. This
is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. All Right,

(01:16:01):
you're really good at this stuff. Okay, you really are?
Um Buyer. Uh, who's the manager of the Atlanta Braves?
Oh jeez? Remember they fired Freddy Gonzalez two years ago?
Do you remember who they know? I would contend that
Major League Baseball the only guys people should know, right,

(01:16:23):
you know Bocchi because greatest voice ever and because he's
one what three World Series? Right? I think you know
Metheni because World Series? You know, done Mattingly because you know,
fired by the Dodgers. He's with the Marlins. Dave Roberts,
you know, because the World Series. And then Joe Madden,
you know, because the World Series. I'm just I'm wondering

(01:16:46):
if anyone knows any other National League managers? Probably not, Well,
what does ODI feel about it? Um? No, I think

(01:18:16):
about Baker Mayfield, Remember Baker Mayfield. It was quoted in
Sports Illustrated, saying, I didn't look at their playbook who
was when he met with the Chargers as much as
I should have. It could have gone a little bit better.
But at the same time, I'm prioritizing which playbooks I'm
going to learn. No offense to them, but I've got
a lot of my play here's Colin. First of all,
everything is something. Everything is something. I now have a

(01:18:39):
guy who has grabbed his crotch on the sidelines, planted
a flag at Ohio State's logo, arrested, public intoxication, tackled
by police, didn't bother studying a Charger playbook. Shirtless Sports
Illustrated by the way TCU Gary Patterson, a very respected coach,
called out his dad once said his dad is arrogant

(01:19:01):
and full of himself. Apple Tree fall, far from it.
You've heard the story. Not saying any of this stuff
is criminal, not saying he's a bad person. But when
you're college football season ends and you're a top quarterback
and you're gonna get drafted. You have a tiny little
window three months to behave. Who's the quarterback we've heard
nothing from. Not a peep, Sam Donald, not a peep.

(01:19:23):
It's not posmouth shirt off every interview he aces his
pro day. He wanted to throw in the rain. I
couldn't agree more with Colin And look, there's there's a
couple of different parts to it. Let's first start with
the comparison part, because it is you're not comparing to no. One,

(01:19:45):
You're not comparing two adults, and you're comparing to other
potential draftees. Right, you just are Lamar Jackson. There's been
issues getting him on the phone, get him in for workouts.
Mom is the agent doesn't want to run a forty um. Again,
that is not the wilful and that's not the arrogance

(01:20:05):
of a Mayfield. But it is something Josh Rosen with
all of the different comments, some which can be taken
out of context, some which we have a tough time
filtering and understanding, some to which it's just like, why
does even conn need to go there? Um, we haven't
heard much from Josh Allen, but there hasn't been anything

(01:20:26):
to dispel any of the sense that he's just not accurate,
even if you can throw it a mile. And then
there's Sam Donald, right, Sam Donald is the guy who
we had Ronald Jones on. Like Sam Donald flew back
early to throw for somebody else at their pro day.
Sam Donald does every right thing, says every right thing. Now,

(01:20:47):
let's just discussed discuss Mayfield. It's not just the bravado
by which he plays, and I don't in and in
and of itself, I don't care about the public intocs.
But there is, uh, there's enough little things there. And
then there's this. Look, here's how it works in any interview,

(01:21:07):
any interview. Tom Kalusco is the general manager of the
San Diego Chargers. He used to be with the Indianapolis
Sorry with the l A Chargers. He he used to
be with the Indianapolis Colts. You don't think he knows
everybody around the league. You don't think these guys talk.
You don't think that the fact that this story got
out a guy who's as well liked, well as respected, like, look,

(01:21:29):
I have a meeting, I take my time out to
to to really talk to you, because they're looking at
some point for the replacement of Philip Rivers, a guy
who's a franchise quarterback. And the least you could do
is research a little bit, all right. We we did
ask you to quote chapter in verse every different part
of Charger lore. We asked you to to prepare the same

(01:21:51):
way to prepare for any anything. And then when you
factor in he's small, he's not as athletic as Russell Wilson,
doesn't have strong enough arm, He's not Drew Brees. He
was a two time walk on. He does he does
carry adrito bag of chips on his shoulder like look.
I think it's a super a bad look, And I

(01:22:11):
think he's gonna be drafted. He's it's gonna be the
Peter principal. It's gonna be elevated above the level of
his aptitude. Say the road ahead is bound, takes unexpected turns.

on Instagram. Brett Brown had a comment on it. Brett
Brown joined us the day after the game and said,
you know, basically usually doesn't step over the line with

(01:23:39):
social media, this one I think he did. Earlier today
he was listened as doubtful. They said it's a collaborative
effort to doctor Brett Brown and Joel Embiid. Now he's
upgraded to probably feels like they just tried to steal one,
like hey, we just get one more home game, just
keep one more game, and they end up costing themselves

(01:23:59):
the game because as of it, I've heard a lot
of talk like, look, I love Colin and um, the
volume of NBA discussion that comes out of his show
is curently kind of remarkable. Uh. He did say the
NBA doesn't need Lebron anymore, which is ridiculous. It's ridiculous.

(01:24:20):
He he also has anointed Ben Simmons the next one. Now, look,
I'm as big a Ben Simmons fan as there has
been in basketball, but we do realize that Joel Embiid
he is probably the more profound talent. Now look, if
you if you're gonna ask me, you're gonna say, Hey, Doug,

(01:24:42):
which one is more likely to have a better career?
I would say Ben Simmons. And the reason is what
these following things. One, he was hurt last year but
doesn't have this history of injuries and we don't have
this kind of unknown of if his body will hold
up like we do with them. Beat and Beat does

(01:25:03):
feel like a sports car that a couple of things
have gone wrong and you're like, hey, you know, it's
a sports car. Things are gonna go wrong, but you
drive it as long as you can drive it into
your into your have it in the shop, right. It's
kind of like a jaguar um. So that's the first.
The second is the way the NBA game is played

(01:25:27):
um and coached and spaced players like Ben Simmons, guys
that can do a little bit of everything and are
big and strong but can handle and finish even without
a jump shot. They can dominate most regular season games
in some postseason games. And uh. And the third party
is that he does make people better. You know, it's

(01:25:49):
everybody likes the guy that makes peel better. And that's
the skill that not a lot of people have. Whereas
Joel Embia plays a position that even though you have
Karl Anthony Towns, and you have DeMarcus Cousins, and you
have Christ Osprezingis, you have Andre Drummond, you have this
group of younger big guys, none of them have really
broken through in the postseason as of yet. Additionally, he

(01:26:14):
you know, you feel like he's gonna break down. But
it's a position with the rules don't favor him. But
if you were just to ask any basketball person, like, hey,
who can impact a game when healthy? Can impact a
game more tonight? Joel embiide or Ben Simmons, They're all
gonna go like, oh, Joel Embiid, Like they're just there's

(01:26:34):
like five humans that have ever walked the earth that
are his size, that can move, and I'm not sure
any of them can play and shoot the way he
can play and shoot. Simmons is a higher basketball like you,
because he's played a lot more growing up, whereas embi
like he might just shoot at three in a one
point game for no reason than like he felt like

(01:26:56):
he was open. But indeed, the footwork, the agility, forget
about the personality stuff Joel Embiid. If you strip away
the injury stuff, everyone would rather have Joel Embiid than
Ben Simmons. And that's not because Ben Simmons stinks, as
Joel Embiid is is. Uh, he's a unicorn. He's unicorn.

(01:27:20):
We've seen the Simmons type of four, whether it's lamar
Odom or Magic Johnson, a little bit of of Lebron,
all all kind of wrapped together. We've seen some of
that before, Wayne seeing Joel Embiad before. We might not
see that again. Um, and so does somebody says, well,
what's the big deal if he plays he's that talented.

(01:27:40):
He's that good when he's right. So um, Colin is
not wrong. Ben Simmons is a tremendous talent. But if
he thinks that his popularity is anywhere near watchabilities, anywhere
near that, Lebron, I give you last night is a
perfect example, perfect example. This is I Gotta leave show

(01:28:05):
on Fox Sports Radio. Speaking of last night, here was
Lebron James after the win talking about his approach the
game too. You know you said coming into this game
that you wanted to be more assertive. Did you think
it was gonna take a forty six point effort to
uh lead your team to victory. Um. I didn't come
into the game saying I want to be assertive, Coach
Lou said it. I never said sad. I'm gonna play

(01:28:25):
my game, and I did that tonight. I made some
shots early, gone to a rhythm, you know, defensively. I
wanted to be in tune. I want to try to
get my guys involved as well. But I mean, I don't.
I just don't. I don't come into game saying I'm
gonna try to do this, I'm gonna do that. It
just kind of happens to follow the game. I played
a game in the right way and that's just a
result of him. So yeah, I'll just come in play
the game, be the result of it. Like he can
say that I was the flow of the game. He's

(01:28:46):
scored the first thirteen points, like, yeah, you know what,
I don't understand the lack of It's one of those things.
And look, I I will do that sometimes as well.
He understood what the gist of the question was, right,
did you to the question? Was you were awesome last night?
You scored the first thirteen you end up with forty
two points, like that was your Your intent was to

(01:29:08):
show how awesome you are, wasn't it? It was a
suck up question. It wasn't. Really we didn't need We'll
know what. Actually I didn't actually say that. Tyrone Louse
said that I did. We actually need to be corrected
on that. And if Lebron wants us to truly believe
not in coming with the mindset of trying to score
every time I got the ball to start the game,

(01:29:30):
why did he try and score? Right? And this is
this is Lebron saying I can do this if I
want to, but I usually want to get more guys involved.
But in this particular game, I felt like I should
get myself more involved, to which all of us will go, Okay,
that makes sense, Okay, it makes sense. I got it,
got it? That said, um, anybody else think Cleveland's kind

(01:29:57):
of got some problems here? Like I understand if we
just look at it as they had a big lead
and they held off a pesky Indiana Pacers team, and
Derrison Darren Collinson through in some threes and they missed
a bunch of free throws. Otherwise, this game is not close.
I look at it, and I and Kevin loves now
hurt thumbs don't bend that way, or at least maybe

(01:30:19):
I thought they're not supposed to bend that way. Kevin
loves Hurt. They have to go to this small ball lineup.
They're not getting nearly the production out of their bench,
even defensively that they want to get. I'm not sure
the Pacers even played that well at all in the
first half, especially because their best player of Victor Ladipo
was settled with foul trouble. Lebron goes absolutely crazy and

(01:30:41):
they went by three three points. Now, I understand final
score should not indicate the important thing was they won
the game. And the important thing was Lebron did feel
the game. But and and they we all know they
needed his scoring. They had eighty the game before and
he didn't look for his offensive. Now he started scoring

(01:31:03):
and they win the game. But I don't know if
he's got forty two in him every night against the Pacers.
Not mentioned it was the thunder with Carmelo Anthony and
Paul George and Russell Westbrook not scoring a point. They
didn't pee a drop in the fourth quarter from the field.
They were over fourteen collectively. Here's Carmelo. I don't know,

(01:31:24):
do you think we missed? I think we all missed.
I don't really have an answered to you know what
what happened a excuse of why we didn't make shots,
And we just didn't make shots in that fourth quarter.
We worked so hard in the third quarter to get
get to lead bad and play so well to get
to go up next seven eight or something like that.
In that third quarter fourth quarter, we we just didn't

(01:31:48):
shoot the ball. Well, yeah, look, I I um, I
just I watched Russell Westbrook in the regular season, and
I told you that rebounding and you can tell me
all this that you want about well, you know, rebounding
is uh. You want your point guards are rebounded. It's

(01:32:08):
better that he gets the boards instead of and he
keep because he's so fast, so athletic. I tell people
this on Twitter music. I'm sure you saw people getting
into me, like, look, if you want to get easy buckets.
And if you watch any of those shots that they
miss collectively in the fourth quarter, none of them were easy.
And I know you've got to be better in the
half court, and they haven't been a very good half

(01:32:29):
court team, even though you have three tremendously talented players,
and some of it is Rudy Gobert. And because you
have to play Steve Madamson play big, that means Liberudyo
Gobert can stay in the game. And Rudy Gobert can
keep you out of the lane and make you take
jump shots, make you take shots you don't want to take.
Somebody is Russell Westbrook's just hard to play with in

(01:32:50):
the half court. He's not a great shooter. He does
like to get to the midrange, and he just misses
some shots occasionally. And this is just kind of a
series of unfortunate misshots. But the thirties six rebounds in
the last two games the regular season. That's not a
good thing. I don't want my point guard rebounding. That's
what Steven Adams gets paid to do. I want my
port guard leaking out if he has to see catches

(01:33:11):
the ball between the the hash the hash mark and
the mid court line going down the floor, so that
he can beat the defense down the floor, get an
easy shot, get to the foul line, something that they
struggled to do in the fourth quarter. So I hate
to tell I say I told you so, but I
did in fact tell you so. You know, we we

(01:33:33):
look at the Big three and we're like, oh, big
Carmelo can't get a step on anybody as good as
Paul George was in Game one. Remember he missed all
those game winners last year for the Pacers against the
Cleveland Cavaliers. And Russell Westbrook has been a guy who
jump shot has gone hot and cold many times in
the past. The road ahead is bound, takes month expected turns.

Doug ot Lip Show, Fox Sports Radio with the Indiana
Boys on the Indian and I Oh. Kevin Clark writes

(01:34:45):
for The Ringer and he got me thinking this article
about the Browns. Um. You know, a lot of us
used to work at at ESPN. They've had some some
ideas that you haven't gone over all that well, some
ideas have I remember, do you guys remember esp on
the phone? I don't know if you. Yeah. I remember

(01:35:08):
my one of my best friends, Devin, he got it
and in high school we were just like, this is
going to be the coolest thing of all time. It
was the coolest thing of all time. It just was
it was a bit too much. It was like one
of those old Sprint flip phones. It was trying to
be a smartphone before there was actually the proper technology

(01:35:29):
to make it a real smartphone, right, and they chose
to go at it alone instead of having a carrier, right,
instead of having Verizon or a T and T or
uh T Mobile whatever as as a carrier, you actually
had and it was really felt like I think it
was really like Sprint service or whatever. Um and yeah,
it was before the iPhone happened. And so I remember

(01:35:51):
I was sitting at dinner one night Randy Johnson pitched
a perfect game and I heard that dannnn Dana as
my phone and I was like, look, Ray Johnson, and
I was like, this is really cool. It's really cool.
And I think of how it would work today if
it existed, and I know that they have their coverage

(01:36:12):
and we have our everybody has their own digital platform.
It was just ahead of their time. It was a
great idea. But what they didn't do it They didn't
vet it enough, they didn't they went to market too soon.
They spent like over a hundred million dollars they lost
on it. And so my point is that that's a

(01:36:33):
really good idea from a really smart company that at
the time at the time was absolutely positive. King of
the Mountain and it was one of the first elves
that they ever took. It really was the first like, man,
it was here, and then it was gone and all
of us who were on are we all got free
ones And it was the coolest thing ever. Right, It's

(01:36:53):
one thing to have a cool phone that nobody else has,
and then it's free. You're like, wow, that's awesome. And
then it was gone and they're like, hey, can you
turn back in that that that ESPN phone. I actually
somewhere I have recorded my I know exactly how long
ago was. It was eleven and a half years ago
or so, maybe eleven years ago. I gave that thing back.

(01:37:15):
I know it because my daughter Harper was like I'm
gonna say ten months old, maybe nine months old. She
pushed herself up and she's like, I you and I
had it recorded on my ESPN flip phone. And so
what happens oftentimes is when a well at the time

(01:37:35):
ESPN was doing phones, like what are they doing doing phones?
They diverted trying to diversify. It didn't work. Um. Now,
when you look at some of the things that they
have done, you're like, it's just a series of bad ideas.
That's I look at this. Here's the Brown story from
Kevin Clark again the bringer this draft season, particularly over

(01:37:56):
the last six weeks, I've asked multiple members of the
Cleveland Browns organization who owns the first and fourth pick
in addition to three second rounders. What I thought was
a very stupid question, Have you considered ignoring all norms
and drafting two quarterbacks high in the draft? The answer
is yes. The people I've asked thought about it, discussed it,
investigated it. Nothing to say will happen, but the Browns
have considered it. In fact, one person I spoke with

(01:38:17):
could immediately rattle off every previous instance of teams drafting
two passers high because he'd done the prep work on
the idea. Considered, considered doesn't mean any like, you know,
it's one of those things to which you're like, look,
if he has ESPN, they should have considered the phone
and going alone, But then who can we do it with?

(01:38:40):
We gotta have the right phone. Remember the phones cost
like four and it end up being a kind of
a lot of egg on their face. It was not
a bad idea, it was a great idea. Poor execution,
poor planning, poor timing. That's really what it was. It's
really what it was. Um and so I look at

(01:39:04):
the Browns and I don't think this is a bad
I don't. I don't. I think it's a unique idea.
I think it does break through norms. I do think
you could, you could try it, you could pull it off.
I don't think there's a strong likelihood for success or
success for two. And so you know, it's one of

(01:39:25):
those things to which there's gotta be an expression for it. Mathematically,
where instead of when you have probability of a of
a hit, right, what's the hit rate of a quarterback?
Say you go first and fourth. The hit rate for
a quarterback is hit rate, right, So some people would

(01:39:49):
believe that six times two would make the hit rate
more likely. Well, you have six percent chance of one
hitting a six percent chance of another one hitting. That
means that there's got to be like an a d
percent chance of one of the two hitting, I mean
hitting a home run. The problem is you already have
Tyrod Taylor is gonna be the starter, so it's gonna

(01:40:11):
be limited reps anyway, and the two doing battle with
one another every day and practice wouldn't work out like
I'm sure the more you vet it, the more you
realize the reality of it is probably doesn't work. Now,
it's not crazy to get somebody late in the draft
fifth sixth, seventh round Kirk Cousins of the fourth round
or same same draft is r G three. And also,

(01:40:34):
let's let's keep mind when you say high draft pick,
what is a high draft pick to somebody? That doesn't
mean the fourth could mean the second could be the
fourth round of the fifth round. Like a high draft
pick to me and you is not a high draft
pick in an NFL front office. But smart people come
up with abstract ideas out of the normal ideas, and
sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. But I at

(01:40:56):
least appreciate the idea that Cleveland's not going like, all right,
we got it quarterback rounber one, and then we gotta
take it this number two. And I mean the perfect
example of that is you know, Todd Griley, Ezekie Elliott,
high draft picks, even Leonard four Nett. I know Alvin
Kamara had big a bigger breakthrough season, but he was

(01:41:18):
the perfect back for what Jacksonville needed. I've seen this
list of other other places where hey, Alvin Kamara is
the best back out of that that draft last year, like,
maybe he's a better value, but Leonard Fournette was. Leonard
Fournett can carry it four hundred times a year, that's
what he's good for. And considering where Jacksonville was, he
was exactly what they needed, even though everybody in the

(01:41:42):
league would tell you, hey, you can get just just
you know, super talented running backs and the third, fourth,
fifth round no problem, especially this year. So do I
think it's a bad idea? Now? I think this is
like a Barns brainstorming idea. You need to write a
bunch of things on the board they're having people vetted out.
Do I think they'll do it? I don't. This is

(01:42:03):
a team that's just rife with holes. They're depleted in
terms of devoid in terms of talent, especially on the
defensive side of the football, and they're gonna load up
there as much as possible. Yeah, Ryan Music, what's up?
Do you think there's any chance the Browns are not
going quarterback at number one? Because there have been conflicting
reports and rumors about them either trading out of or

(01:42:25):
taking a different position player at number one and seeing
whose quote unquote left over at four. Yeah, I don't.
I don't. I don't see them taking a different position
player that would make no sense. A couple of things. First,
remember the Browns passed on quarter passed on Carson Wentz
at number one over They've passed on several other quarterbacks
in the past. So with that mind, you know last

(01:42:47):
year they could have drafted a quarterback number one overall.
They did not. So, um, if this was their first
if they was the Giants and they had a quarterback
who had want a couple of Super Bowls and there
hadn't been that position before, maybe, but it's not the Giants,
it's the Browns. They passed on quarterbacks. They passed on

(01:43:08):
quarterbacks at number one overall. And this is as it's
so the pick is so much more valuable to people
because the Dolphins, the Bills, the Patriots all want a
quarterback and all have multiple picks. So no, I don't
see them taking another position. Yes, I see them taking

(01:43:30):
a quarterback, even if they don't necessarily want to, like, hey,
we because there is an amount of pressure. And I
remember I talked to the people in Cleveland with the
Calves when they drafted Anthony Bennett. They're like, look, we
had seveny guys in and we didn't know who we
probably should have drafted. We liked Oladipo, but we felt
like Anthony Bennett was a hybrid player. We didn't love him.

(01:43:50):
He had the shoulder problem, He couldn't do all things
we wanted to work out, But we didn't like him.
We liked his upside. But what what befell Anthony Bennett
in that draft was that he was taking number one overall.
Just the people don't understand the pressure you have at
number one overall. Number one overall, you're you know, you're

(01:44:12):
you're expected to play and play well um and and
if you don't, then you're seen as a bus Where
is it number two? It's a little bit different. It's
just a little bit different. Anthony Bennett was drafted number
one overall in two thousand thirteen. Oladipo went to Otto Porter,

(01:44:36):
Cody Zeller, Anthony lenn Nerland's Noel, Ben McLemore, Contavious Callwell, Pope,
Trey Burke, c J. McCullum is the tenth pick man
that has a bad draft. Oladip was far and away
the best player right now from that draft. I believe, yeah,
he and Janice, excuse me, Janice was like fifteen, but

(01:44:56):
Anthony Anthony Bennett being such a big bust one because
he's had the league, but two because he went one overall.
So I understand music where you're coming from, Like you
don't really want to put the pressure on a kid
because you don't want to play right away. They might
actually value somebody, yes, but they're gonna they're gonna snap
up those quarterbacks. That's what they're gonna do this tax season.

takes some unexpected turns. Farmers Insurance can help you understand
your coverage options with our practical knowledge game for more
than ninety years of experience, we know a thing or
two because we've seen the thing or two. Fine age
Net Farmers Dot. We are all right. Let's bring in
Chris Brossard from Fox Sports Radio. On the weekends, Fox

(01:47:08):
Sports won all our different TV over different TV entities. Um,
Lebron goes crazy last night and they still only win
by three. Should we be really concerned even though the
Calves even out the series at one game apiece. Well,
I think what it shows is that he's going to
need his teammates to step up. And I think that's

(01:47:29):
why you don't see Lebron James play like that more often.
You know, he could probably do that three out of
every four or five games, and and certainly in an
early round series if he wanted. But he's always believed
that we're better off if I'm getting thirty ish in
terms of points and nine or ten assists and somebody

(01:47:51):
else that's chipping in with twenty or something like that.
Another guy hits seventeen or fifteen. So, um, I think
that that's why the game was close, So that that's
not how Lebron James is going to play every night. UM.
So the large the thing that the Calves need to
have is just another few players be able to step

(01:48:14):
up and deliver. Obviously, Kevin Love has not played up
to what you expect from a second option All star. Um.
They didn't get him enough looks in the first game,
obviously at the hand injury in Game two. But they're
gonna need, you know, and what you saw with Tyler
lou yesterday, he went to the old horses that have

(01:48:35):
been there before, Kyle Corver j R. Smith they start
and then you know, you look at Ridey Hood, Jordan Clarkson.
Their minutes were a lot lower than they have been
and so he was like, look, I'm gonna go with
the guys that have been there, but I think they're
gonna need some of those young guys to step up
and give them some good games to get out of

(01:48:56):
this series. I still still think they win it, but
I think it's gonna be a tough one. I think
it could be a tough six, maybe even seven games.
Christopers are joining us on the dug Otlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Feels like in Bead's gonna play tonight,
don't if you saw that they moved him from doubtful
to probable with some internal injury report like to feel
it feels like they tried to steal the other game

(01:49:17):
at home to rest him, and now they're like, all right,
we gotta play him, even if they don't really want
you tonight. Yeah, I don't know if that's him just
really pushing and pushing and pushing. Look, I would air
on the side of caution if I'm them. If he's
ready and the doctors are saying he's fine, by all means,
play him because this is obviously a pivotal game. But

(01:49:39):
if there's any doubt, and if the extra couple of
days would help you, I would see him until game
four number one. You know, it's more about the future
than the present, and this is a guy that is
injury prone. It's the second hit he's taken to that.
I you know, when he was at Kansas, he got
hit in the left eye, wore goggles in the next

(01:49:59):
game game it wasn't this serious, but still you just
want to be over cautious with him. And they could
potentially win this game without him. Um, they obviously did
that in Game one. If you lose, you're in a
two one hole. But that's not an insurmountable deficit against
the Miami Heat, especially when you're getting in being back.
So I would air on the side of caution. Uh,

(01:50:22):
and I would think that's what they're going to do.
So if he's out there tonight, I assume that means
you know, he's he's all good and ready to go.
How happy should Laker fans be at what happened with
Oklahoma City last night? Well, Uh, they they should like that. Look,
I think Paul George unless okay, see, you know, have

(01:50:43):
some great run in the playoffs, and I think that's
a possibility. Um, I think they win this series. This
is what you have. I believe you have a a
team that doesn't have nearly as much talent, but it's
very well coached and execute and play smart basketball. And

(01:51:03):
they do have one great athlete in in uh Donovan Mitchell.
And then you have a team that's wildly talented, are
very talented, but I don't think they're very well coached
and don't play smart basketball. And so your which one
is going to win out in this series. I think
okay See will win out. And I tell you what,
I think they can make it tough on the Houston

(01:51:26):
Rockets in the next round if they won that second
round somehow, I I wonder if that would convince Paul
George to stay another year. Um. Look, I think the
eyes on favorite is clearly the Lakers. Although, and I
actually like your opinion on this. I think the best
basketball fit for Paul George and three agency man go

(01:51:48):
to Philly. Philly. Oh, I think he'd be perfect with
Ben Simmons and Joel m b. You don't think you'd
be a great fit there. I think I think he.
I think he would. But it's like, why would you now,
you're just just moving around chess piece like you buy
as well stay in Oklahoma City. You got Russell Westbrook

(01:52:11):
really well that they're completely different types of point guard. No,
I agree in terms of Ben Simmons Diaming, you up
and and you create, you know, you get shots off
the space that they need and and you can guard
a couple of positions. I mean, the whole thing is
to is the the chance to come and play home.
I play at home Otherwise have a better stance of

(01:52:33):
being in the East and winning. You know, you know,
we all know the East as an easier road to
the finals. Um, but yeah, obviously wants to. I think
that changes with Boston when Boston gets healthy. Um. I
bill think Philly is a better team, but not not
maybe not right now, but next year I think Philly
would be the favorite. I mean, we'll see what Lebron

(01:52:54):
James does, but if he leaves, I think Philly would
be the favorite in the East. Written my book, Obviously,
everybody's reacting to the to the news that Pop's wife
is Pop's wife died. Um, and it gives us a
chance to kind of pause the Kauai Letterard conversation. But
the quiet Leonard thing seems to have readd you know,

(01:53:16):
some people say, look, they still have a good relationship.
This is about Pop going after his people more than
Pop going after Kauai. What's your read on it. I
think Kauai has a good relationship with some of the players.
Um that he's still you know, I think the report
Polosaus had some players he doesn't respond to for months,
others he does. Um, I think he's he's fine with

(01:53:37):
some of the players. DeSante Murray. I think Danny Green Um,
Rudy gay Um, but others, you know, maybe not. I'm
not sure about that. As far as Pop and Kauai,
you know, Pop's always been able to dig get players
um and coach players and yell at players, and and
the Tim Duncan's and the David Robinson's and the Tony Parker,

(01:54:00):
the Genobi's, they would take it. I think Kauai and
I think a lot of players to day, but Kauai
is a different animal. Um And I don't know that
the little digs or even if they're just perceives digs
that Pop has taken at Kauai. I don't know if
if Kauai is gonna get over that now. Maybe he will.

(01:54:22):
I'm literally I mean it when I say I don't know,
I mean I think that Kauai doesn't like it, and
I think Popping feels like I'm always able to smooth
it over. We gotta put my arm around here, hey man,
I was just doing that too, you know, get you
fired up, trying to get you back if the players
going whatever, I don't know if it's gonna work with Kauai.

(01:54:42):
It may, but it may not. And that's where this
will come to a head, and that's where it really
be a problem for the Spurst. I don't know that
they've fully said, yo, we gotta trading. Let's get what
we can. They understand how great a fatality is. There
are some people that believe they will still offer him

(01:55:02):
the super Max and try to make it work. And
if it doesn't work and he signs that deal, then
you control the trade market. You can trade him where
you want because he's got four years left on his deal,
and whoever trades for him has a security of him staying.
If he's traded this summer, he dick takes the term,

(01:55:22):
you can't send him somewhere he doesn't want to go,
and as a one year rental, you're not gonna get
a lot of value for that. So that's what That's
all that has to be considered. Uh, from the Spurs
standpoint in terms of what they're going to do with Kauai. Look,
Boston can certainly put together a great offer. The Lakers
can to Clippers are gonna go after him hard. Um.

(01:55:46):
I do think there's a part of Kauai from talking
to some people that would like to be you know,
he's from the l A area. That so both of
those organizations are well run. Now you've got Jerry West
with the Flip Proof and you know Magic and Forlinka
with the Lakers. So um it's this will all comes

(01:56:06):
to a hand where we see whether or not the
Spurs offer him that Supermax and whether or not he
signs it. Chris Brussard and be inside of Fox Sports one.

He was ratist highest for maximum refunds tonight and more
cash spent on whatever the heck you want this tax season,
go ahead and slant max refund at tax layer dot com.
The press, Dan Buyern, what you got in the press? Well,
we've got three playoff games tonight and one starting in
a little over an hour. And the Sixers have made

(01:57:31):
this part official that Joel Ebeid has been upgraded too probable.
They say he still has to make it through pregame warmups.
But if he does play, he'll start tonight and wear
a mask. Looks like Joel Embiad's gonna go for the
Sixers against the Heat. And Game three of their series
in Miami was the line moved it all day. I
don't know. I'm not a betting man when it comes

(01:57:53):
to the NBA or really anything, but I'm I didn't
see what even what it was to start out all.
I'll check on that. What else he got, I've got this.
If the New York Nicks will reportedly interview T n
T S Kenny Smith for their coaching vacancy, reports surface
yesterday that that meeting could come down as soon as tomorrow. Okay,

(01:58:16):
I would, I would. I would pay to see that.
That would be. That would be fantastic. It would be
great because as he would coach, he'd have Ernie Johnson
on his right as an assistant, and then Shack and
then Charles Bark would be on this left. The only
way that you can, you know, really see Kenny Smith now.
And I'm trying to envision Kenny Smith not on inside

(01:58:38):
the NBA, N T n T. You know who would
slide into that spot if it happened. Chris Webber, I'm
not sure. Um, no would be Chris Webber, wouldn't be
Isaiah Thomas, I don't think be Baron Davis. Look he's
not getting the jobs. Doesn't really matter, all right. Scottie Pippen,

(01:59:00):
his fifty dollars worth of equipment, including two tractors, were
stolen from his family farm in Arkansas. How about that? Well,
there's a bunch to Scotti will remember was a walk on, right,
he was a walk on. He was actually a manager
his first year. Since someone walked on to his farm
and stole his stuff. Who's like, that's the most redneck

(01:59:26):
Arkansas story ever? Yeah? Right, I still I got my
tractor stolen. That's the beginning of a bad country song. Uh,
Scotty Pippen second on his farm and steals right now,
there's that one as well. You know, staff Filler. Hopefully
he rebounds from this awful news. I don't know. We'll

(01:59:47):
see if the cops can assist in anything. But you're
on a roll many biscuits. Uh. The NFL schedule is
gonna be released coming up at eight o'clock Eastern time.
There's what is the point of all these people leaking
the NFL schedule? I know there's a leak that the
Jets and Lions are gonna play game one of the

(02:00:09):
Monday night doubleheader in weeks that's gonna happen. That's already
been a's out. I know that's one of the leaks.
That's what I was saying, like, that's okay. I don't
know if people are gonna be mad as hell over
the Jets and Lions. Maybe the only time you want
to watch that Week three of Thursday Night Football, which
is really Week two of Thursday Night Football. Oh interesting,

(02:00:30):
I'll make sure to make interesting. I mean, that's Tyrod
Taylor against Josh McCown. That's before they're gonna start the
young guys. That's uh. Maybe they're trying to get all
those young quarterbacks in primetime games early on and you
can see those showdowns. Remember, we didn't Mariota and Winston
face off like the opening week that they were that

(02:00:50):
was they play, but that was on that was an
NFL Network only game. These are all big Fox and
NFL Network games. Yeah, I know, but I just I
thought it was maybe like I thought it was opening
week that they played each other. Anyways, Bracco's GM John Elways,
said a lot but really said nothing when it came
to the team picking fifth the next week's NFL draft. Yeah,
we couldn't move up, or if we if we drop back,
we could do this. But he did reveal this bit

(02:01:12):
on who would have the finals say, if the decision
comes down to a quarterback sensus, I'm one to three
or four or is it something where this guy likes
his quarterback not yet regardless of consensus to be a guy,
do you like, Yeah, that's my job, right, I gotta
break the ties. So John always gonna have the final

(02:01:35):
choice if it's a quarterback. Yeah, what's the point of
what's the line from Billions what's the point of having
a few money unless every once in a while you
don't say f you basically what he's saying. What's the
point of being John Elway? If not everyone's a while,
you don't get to say, Hey, guess what, guys, I'm
John Elway. Hey, I'm John Elway. I'm gonna make the
pick here. The Giants release veterand wide receiver Brandon Marshall

(02:01:56):
after just one season, where Marshall played in only five
games for the team. Yeah, he's he's washed up and
he's a bit of a locker room lawyer. Happy he
you know, happy he discovered his multiple personality disorder and
he's become a spokesperson for mental healthcare. But tough guy
to play with, tough gotta play with defense. Eve end
White Freney retired after sixteen seasons in the NFL, likely

(02:02:19):
bomb for Canton. Yeah, we have to look the other way.
Didn't you have a p D suspension here? Late in
his career Robert Mathis did that? Was Mathis? Math Is
not Freeny? Yeah, Dwight Freeney is the one that kind
of he was doing this thing where he would sit
out and wait and sit out and wait and then
join a team right to play for the Chargers, the Cardinals,
the Falcons, the Seahawks and the Lions, and everybody forgot

(02:02:42):
about it. Yeah, I mean he's I I guess. Yeah,
he's a Hall of Famer, seven time Pro bo the
three team, first Team All Pro. Yeah, he's Hall of Famer. Finally,
Lance Armstrong settled a one hundred million dollar lawsuit with
the US government that will have him pay five million
dollars to the US Postal Service and others after admitting
you dope during his seven Tour de France tie adults.
The government was suing Lance Armstrong and get out there

(02:03:04):
and pressed. That was the press. He fought the law
and the law one right, and he did that. He
did the he did the the the ultimate evil thing.
He was like, dude, cancer, Yeah, but we think you didn't.
I had cancer. I wouldn't. I wouldn't do that. I
had cancer. I wouldn't do that. I had cancer. Do
you know I had cancer? I had cancer? Five million dollars? Wow, fascinating.

(02:03:30):
I did see that documentary that you recommended music about
the guy who became a cyclist. Was fascinating. Yeah, great,
wasn't it? Yeah? It was amazing. I'll be hosting The
Herd tomorrow. Check it out. This is a goat them
