Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Boom What Up America Doug Gottlieb show
Fox Sports Radio coming to you live and direct from
the City of Angels And just like we all thought
the Kancity Chiefs would go in there and beat the
New England Patriots. If you listen to the show, we
all predicted it. Matter of fact, only Dan Buyer, only
(00:23):
Dan Buyer thought the Patriots would win. The Patriots would
cover boor Dan he laid uh all of his lifely
earnings and possessions on the paths and uh oh it
was actually the opposite was true. Nonetheless, like look, context
does matter, and it does matter if you watch the game,
patch her up seven nothing, go for it on fourth
(00:45):
down deep in Kansa City territory. Don't get it because
Eric Berry's a stud. And what could have been or
should have been ten nothing, could have been fourteen nothing?
And games set good night, sleep well is uh drive
home safely? Suddenly becomes a seven seven game. And even
though the Patriots lad at the half, which I believe,
(01:07):
there's something like they were fifty two and three under
Tom Brady when leading at a half, and they had
one a hundred and five in a row leading At
the end of the third quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs,
led by the superstar we have all knowed, come to
know and love, which Alex Smith, come from behind and
(01:30):
beat the Newing the Patriots just as we all thought. Man,
there's so much to get to. But more than anything,
that was a great pronouncement that football is back, just is.
But can we at least wonder allowed right? I'm not
the only one wondering if we're seeing Tom Brady lose
(01:57):
that battle too uh to time? Right? Are we? Is that?
Is that what Father Time is? Undefeated? And are we
seeing that game in the third or fourth quarter suddenly
slip away from Tom Brady in his battle versus Father Time?
I mean, because if you think about it, Tom Brady,
(02:18):
he wasn't good against the Texans in the playoffs, and
though he was good against the Steelers, the Steelers at
a terrible defense by the end of last year. For
the first three quarters against the Falcons, he looked overwhelmed
by the speed, athleticism mother pass rush. And last night,
forget about just the numbers, because numbers aren't always telling.
(02:42):
Last night he had eleven misfires, far more than Alex Smith,
who sliced and diced the Patriots defense. Now there's a
bunch to get to. Let's get to what Tom Brady
said after last night's came. There was nothing really positive
anything that was done. So you know, we gotta get
(03:02):
back to work nine days for the next game and
hopefully played at better than tonight. Couldn't run, it couldn't throw,
it couldn't find consistent offense. Tom Brady just sixteen of
thirty six. Sixteen of thirty six. Now look in fairness.
In fairness, you take away um Julian Edelman, who is
(03:22):
their top pass catching threat last year with over ninety receptions.
That's going to change anyone. And though Danny Amendola was
good and he came back from a licking right, they
struggled to get Brandon Cook's going. They hit him on
that one yarder. Gronk only had two catches. Chris the
(03:42):
touchdown was called back, and then Chris Hogan only had
one catch. So some of it was Brady, some of
it was his line. Some of this Kansas City is terrific.
We have a terrific pass rush and they've been a
great regular season team. Here's Bill Belichick. So we all
got to do a better show. That's somebody pretty much
(04:03):
the answered every question because that's what it was. How
about Kareem Hunt? Like how And there's there's some arrogant
s ob out there who's sitting there going like I
knew what I got my fantasy team, Like, yeah, he
was a rookie. You hadn't seen him play. He wasn't
expected to start. Third round pick seventeen seventeen carries hunting
forty eight yards, five catches yards, including that seventy eight
(04:24):
yard How about Kareem Hunt. Yes, that's what we thought
we would see after he fumbled the first time he
touches the ball in an NFL game. So the thing
about sports is the conclusion is not predetermined. And even
when you think you know at the at halftime, or
you think you know at the end of the third quarter,
(04:46):
you don't actually know. Congratulate the Cancie Chiefs. They go
in and they they gotta win. But the the cautionary
tale of a forty year old quarterback and of a
team that doesn't have a pass rush right, the either
of those two things could derail your team. Like you
(05:08):
pick the car, right, there are certain cars that the
test of time has always told us, you're better off
picking up a you're better off getting a camera. Whatever.
The most miles you've ever put on a car is
before you're sitting there going well, you know, I feel
(05:28):
really confident that it will outlive it's warranty. I'll have
no issues. My wife had an suv Um and it
was really well made. We got it seven years ago,
maybe eight years ago, and we got like a kind
of luxury caliber suv I don't know if you guys
(05:49):
do this with your kids. My wife has always driven
a nicer car than I have. And the reason is
one my wife and too, I have my kids in it, right,
Like you want whatever, I want, the safest best. If
I'm gonna spend any money, I'm gonna spend it first
and foremost on their safety and their well being. That's
what you're supposed to do, at least that's how I
was raised. Um, and so I remember, like, look, we
(06:15):
we didn't have a single problem with the car during
the life of its warrantine, even passed the warrantine. She
got to about a hundred thousand miles in his car,
and suddenly, you know, like something goes wrong here, something
goes wrong there, And it doesn't matter that the car
is well made. There just is a life expectancy on
many of these little parts and eventually things are going
(06:35):
to break. And so this doesn't mean that Tom Brady
is done. This is a little bit like the reasonable
conversation we had about Michael Bennett. Right, Like, to me,
it was reasonable that he if he was hiding from gunshots,
that's reasonable. It's also reasonable that at some point he
decided to make a run for it. But it's also
(06:55):
reasonable to think that the police who walked in and
said freeze, don't anybody move. They see somebody run from them,
they go after them and think they might be involved
and detain them until they can understand that they're not
actually involved. Right, all of these are reasonable actions. Look,
it's reasonable to think Tom Brady had a he had
coming off a great regular season, coming off a great
(07:17):
comeback in the super Bowl, that he is your guy.
But it's also reasonable to believe that at some point
he will fade, because that happens, right, even if a
car makes it. I bought a car at two hundred miles, okay,
but at some point your car is going to break down.
That's just what happens, and the human body, though well constructed.
(07:39):
Though we protect quarterbacks and we protect Brady, at some
point it's not going to be the same as it
was at thirty eight. Definitely not the same as it
is thirty So I I do wonder now in fairness,
(08:00):
Ryan Billick is gonna join us, but half past the hour,
Super Bowl champion coach NFL Network Brian Billick will will
will be our guest. And one of the things that
we also have to concede is something said in the NFL.
The teams are still trying to figure out exactly what
they have. I mean, case in point, you could you
(08:20):
could have like, look, you could have thought that the
Chiefs were in trouble because they lost their starting running
back in the preseason. As of now, they don't appear
to be in that dire need of a running back.
Who would have thought, Kareem Hunt welcome to the NFL.
Huh amazing. Let me just say this real quick about
(08:43):
Alex Smith. You know, competition brings out different things in
different people. And I will concede that. Um, like, look,
I'm better. I always played basketball better when I was angry.
I was angry. Like if you could bring me off
the bench. I would play better if you took me
out of the game, put me and I'll let me
put me back in. I would play better. I'd be
more focused. I don't know what it is, but I
(09:04):
didn't do well when I didn't necessarily function well when
there was another guy creeping over my shoulder for a spot,
because I felt like that would in basketball at least.
You don't know what you don't get forty minutes, you
split some minutes. I didn't deal with that well. The
one thing we should remember about Alex Smith is he
(09:24):
lost his job to injury when he was in San Francisco,
and this is it is there's a fascinating parallel between
he and Pat Mahomes right, like Colin Kaepernick had something
that Alex Smith simply didn't have. An Alex Smith is
a very good runner. He's a very good athlete coming
out of high school, coming out of college, and even
at times in the NFL. But his inability again until
(09:46):
last night, or lack of desire to throw the ball downfield,
has always driven people in Kansas City crazy. He's one
of those better safe and sorry type of guys. But
if you remember back his last start that he finished,
start that he finished. In San Francisco, he had a
near perfect game. It was against the Arizona Cardinals on
(10:07):
Monday Night football, and he was nearly perfect. And remember
this is with Kaepernick kind of creeping over his shoulder,
and so with Pat Mahomes setting the world on fire
and making people like me wonder, how long is the
leash on Alex Smith and the Chiefs having to come
out and go, look, he Alex Smith is our guy.
They're not pulling out. They wouldn't say that unless they
realized what everybody else realizes, that, Hey, the rookie's pretty good.
(10:33):
The one thing about Alex Smith that we have to
give him credit for is when he's been challenged by
another guy in the quarterback room and by fans thinking
there's a chance that he will get pulled, he's actually
performed better. Last night. He was magnificent. Thirty five four touchdowns,
naryan interception. I just want to put nary in a sentence,
(10:56):
three sixty eight yards. And he is the first quarterback
to win a game against Tom Brady as quarterback of
the New England Patriots. When Brady's team led at the
end of the third quarter. It's pretty good stuff, all right.
One of the greatest to ever play in the game
is flat outlying. I'll tell you who that is and
what he said next. But first you've all been waiting

(12:45):
Do you guys know what tonight is? Uh? Music? Don't
don't cheat because you know what tonight is. Because we
talked about this. We're walking to get some chicken pre
show ramos. Do you know what what sporting event is? What? What?
What is tonight? Uh? It would be Friday night and
I'm thinking it's gonna be something NFL related. No, nothing NFL.
(13:09):
There's college football? Uh? South Alabama which goes by us
A uh playing host to mild modern Oklahoma. No, No,
that's actually not what I was talking about anything else
in sports at all going on tonight. Oh US Open,
US Open is going on tonight. That that's what that's
that's but that's that's that wasn't what I was referring
to last night. US Open was phenomenal women's tennis. Uh
(13:31):
so maybe guys went into it. I don't know, Um
what else you got for me tonight? By the way,
is Raphael and Adal versus one? Martin del Porto port
who's that he was just a gigantic giant of a
man um and then uh yeah, Dan buy or any idea? No,
(13:51):
I mean I thought it was gonna be the Mason
Rudolph show. I thought that's where you're going with your
your cowboy history, but without the US Open, And in
that I'm stomped by the way you US open. Can
you name fire? I don't know if you've written this down,
do you know you know who's in the other semifinal anyway,
don't don't say it. Don't say it, Ramos, any idea
is just the men's of the women's men's men's tonight.
(14:12):
Uh Nadal, Now that's one that Nadal de Portreaux is
the Federal Lostkay, yeah, I don't, of course not Boris
Kevin Anderson, Kevin Anderson and Pablo Karino busta. Of course.
(14:37):
Look there's two Spaniards and the Spanish players are usually
really good on clay. Right in the French Open, you've
got two Spaniards in the semi finals, Nadal in the
other one. No, the big ceremony tonight is the Nasmith
Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. And I bring
it up because nobody knows because there's such idiots that
(14:59):
they had it tonight. Eat. How dumb are these people? Right? Like,
when you're gonna schedule things, I don't understand. I also
don't understand. You know, people schedule weddings in the fall.
Do you know that? Yeah, it's really big, especially in
the northeast parts of the South, to schedule weddings in
the fall. You're like, oh, you know, the fall is beautiful,
(15:20):
getaway weekend. It's like, a dude, you have to have
you have to eat. You look as your guy. At
some point you gotta step in and go like, hey, babe, listen,
I love you, but don't U s C in Stanford
play that weekend. You didn't go to USC and Stanford like,
and didn't Georgian Notre Dame play that Saturday like you
(15:41):
didn't go to Notre Dame and don't like Georgia. And
the point is, there is college football on Saturday, there's
NFL football on Sunday, and there was football last night,
damn it. So unless you're getting married on like a
Friday afternoon, and even if you are getting married on
a Friday afternoon, that means you're going on your honeymoon
and during football season like no, no, So women shouldn't
(16:05):
push for these fall weddings and organizations shouldn't have their
most prestigious ceremony in the first full weekend of football
season in September, right, Like am I wrong? Like hey, hey,
nay Sefmorial Hall of Fame, you had the whole summer,
you had the whole summer. Ah, we'll get it in
(16:29):
in September. It will be a big thing. Nobody actually
knows this exists. It's the Hall of Fame. There is
no greater honor in your sports. And look, I would
love to change baseball Baseball up so that Baseball was
(16:52):
playing their playoffs right now, so they get more attention.
But I also understand that that changes. Uh, do you
have to contract the season to four games or even
a hundred forty games? That changes historic, historic numbers. It
changes a lot of things. You've got TV partners, You're
moving all kinds of stuff around with stadiums. Cutting games
(17:13):
means cutting revenue for the stadiums, etcetera, etcetera. Like there's
a lot at play there. None of this changes if
you just it's a Hall of Fame ceremony. By the way,
they have eleven people. That sounds like a miserable night.
Eleven people getting inducted in. Uh, how many Hall of
(17:35):
famers can you name? Can your name? They're getting inducted?
Take a shot music without looking? Uh the only one
off the top of my head is Tracy McGrady, right,
because I said he doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. Um,
rama's you got any others for me? I'm gonna say
a coach, a Hall of Fame coach. That's Bill Self,
who friend of mine. He's in. What else? You got
(17:57):
any anybody else? Us? One? There's there's another Rebecca Lobo.
She belongs in great women's basketball players. Also women's coach,
you know, notreme coach, Muffett McGraw, all time great name, right,
all time great name, Jerry Kraus, Crumbs Krouse getting in
(18:18):
right um, and then George McGinnis, Nick Gallis, Zack Clayton,
Tom Jerstad, who of course helped expand the n c
A tournament to sixty four teams. Al Right, so those
that there's your induction class, Manny Jackson all getting in
all part of the triment class two thousand and seventeen.
(18:39):
So look, here's the thing. It should be in August
because no one's talking about it. Tracy McGrady does not
belong in the all Like we had to come up
with an NBA player, and Tracy McGrady is a wildly
popular NBA player, but hall of popularity maybe as a
main player in two thousands thirteen is part of the
(19:00):
Spurs team. He was like last dude on the bench.
He was the darko militi to that team. Technically he
went to the NBA Finals, but during his real NBA
career he never got out of the first round of
the playoffs. So I'm not holding rings against him, right.
But the idea that like, look, you can score, is
(19:20):
it is leading the league and scoring a couple of years.
Is that a big thing? Like? Yeah, that is no
small feat, no small feat at all. But what is
the point of leading the league and scoring if you
can't get your team out of the first round of
the playoffs? Ever? Not a single time ever? Which brings
(19:43):
us to Randy Moss, who, of course, uh, will be
on the ballot for this year's Hall of Fame in
five months. In the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which
smartly used it like a celebration of football football has
already had their induction ceremony. The basketball thing is just
dumb anyway. Uh. He said this to the Pioneer Press,
(20:08):
which of course is in the Twin Cities where he
had some of his best work playing for the Vikings.
Brian Billick, who was his offensive coordinates, going to join
us upcoming in five minutes. We'll ask him about about
Randy Moss. There's a lot of different avenues we could
go down with the Hall of Fame, the voting, the criteria,
all that stuff. All I know is I just played
the game to the best of my ability. I put
(20:28):
my mark, my stamp, my family's name. In the game
football and National Football League. You can't get any higher.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Um Wait a second now.
Randy Moss is famous for a couple of things. Fake
mooning the Green Bay Packer fans. I guess was a
big thing because Joe Buck called him out where I
(20:50):
wasn't offended by it, and I don't think anybody else
really was. Joe apparently was at the moment. He's famous
for catching touchdown passes in New England. He did get
out of every team that he was on. He was
a freak athlete. He was a great player. He is
likely a Hall of Famer. But the issue I have
(21:11):
is I just played the game to the best of
my ability. Wait a second, are you're gonna change the narrative?
Dan Buyer. Randy Moss was known for saying, what in Oakland,
Oh gosh, I just know straight cash on me, Gray,
cash on me. I play what I want to play with,
I play when I want to play. He shut it down.
He was on bad Oakland Raider teams. He took money
(21:33):
to go to bad Oakland Raider teams, and it was
the culture was so bad there that he would he
would unless he was getting the ball, he wouldn't run hard,
and he was seen as a team killer. Now he
completely turned around his career when he went to New
England Patriots, playing with Tom Brady and play with and
and he's a hell I'm not I'm not doubting that
(21:53):
he's a Hall of Famer. But please don't tell me
I played the game to the best of my ability,
not the whole time you didn't. Not the whole time
he didn't. Sorry, Dan Buyer is getting ready to tell
us what else is going on the sports. There's a
lot of things that Randy Moss has said, and I
think straight cash on me was in Minnesota, so I
(22:15):
was wrong from the get go on that one is
something he's done for. Yeah, it's that's going into the vehicle,
straight cash homey, let's talk to ABOUTNFL action. Bad news
for the Kansas City Chiefs even after the win last night,
Doug Safety Eric Barry done for the year. Did rupture
as attilies in the Achilles attendant that is in the
last night's game. Yeah, attillies as well. It's it's just
off the Achilles. Yes, you should vacation there in the Attillies.
(22:39):
It's right next to the Antillies. It's it's a great spot. No.
Eric Berry done for the season for the Chiefs towards
achilles tendon last night in that win against New England,
the third time in his career. He's gonna miss a
majority of the season towards a c L six years ago.
Three years ago was battling Hodgkins lymphoma. Now done for
the year with a torn achilles. John's water receever o
Dell Beckham Jr. Is questionable to play again the Cowboys
(23:00):
Sunday night, still dealing with that ankle injury. ESPN is
saying he's gonna be a game time decision for that
showdown in Dallas. Cam Newton is questionable to play for
the Panthers against the Niners with a shoulder injury, but
he is expected to start that contest. The series between
the Yankees and Raised in St. Petersburg on Monday through
Wednesday is gonna be moved the City Field in New York.
That's because of Hurricane Irma. It's forcing the move as
(23:23):
the Race will remain the home team as they play
at the home of the Mets. The Dolphins actually coming
out to Southern California. Their game postponed this weekend against
the Buccaneers. They've got the Chargers in week two, so
they'll make camp here in l A for the next
week or so and finally dug According to the Athletic,
Cavs guard as Ayah Thomas dealing with more than a
terran is injured hip. As the report says, Thomas is
dealing with a loss of cartilage and arthritis in that hip. Yeah,
(23:45):
that's that's what. That's what that that's that hip thing does.
That's why he's gotta have it shaved down. Uh. And
once you have it shaved down, it's gonna become even
more arthritic at some point, although he'll feel better, but
if he has it done, then he's gonna miss half
the season. This is this has become a really bad
deal from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Anyways. Doug Gottlib show Fox
(24:07):
Sports Radio, let's welcome in Brian Billick, who joins his
care of the good folks at seat geek dot com
and the promo code Billick that's b I L l
I c K. You get twenty dollars off of your
first seat geek purchase coach, thanks so much for joining
us on the show. Um, exactly what we thought, right.
We thought that the Kansat Chiefs would only go in
(24:27):
with a rookie running back would dominant. He would dominate
that game, but they would be the first team since
Tom Brady became starting quarterback to trail at the end
of the third quarter and win in Foxbor. That game
could not have played out more perfectly for what all
of us thought. Correct. We all that that's the way
I had it laid out, didn't you? Uh uh No, Okay,
(24:50):
so let's start with the Pats. Um, how how concerned
should anyone be about Tom Brady seeing as there was
a levin misfires from a guy who has been deadly
accurate throughout his career. Yeah, that's That's the amazing thing
about this, isn't it When you talk about the first
week in the NFL and it's and it's very typical.
(25:11):
Everybody's gonna win the Super Bowl. Everybody's confident, and then
come Monday or Tuesday after the first week, the league
is an absolute panic mode. Um. A day ago, we
were talking about a seventeen and old New England Patriot
team Tom Brady that could play until he's fifty years old,
and now it's it's my god, are they gonna win
(25:32):
a game? And and I want to I want to
see that. I want to see I want to be
at the news conference because you know someone's gonna ask, well,
do you think you ought to go with Jimmy Garop's quarterback?
And and just to see what Bill Belichick's response is. Um, yeah,
last night, like we said, you never picked against New
England at home. Particularly in an opener, the fact that
(25:55):
Kansas City played the way they did. One says Kansas
City now is the top of the pyramid. I mean
they look spectacular. Um. The knock against Kansas City always
been what, well, they can't get vertical, can't get the
ball down the field of the receivers. Well, that's exactly
what they did. Um, you're right, Tom Brady did look pedestrians. Now,
it's always hard to separate the play of a quarterback
(26:17):
from what's going on around him. The locks of Edelman,
but there was a lot of things that have got
to be a concern that you know, they're gonna come
right back and be fine, and they're gonna they'll they'll
play well next week and and we're right back to it.
That's typical of the NFL. Whether you win the first
game or lose it, you're telling your team the same
thing because after week two, you know, if you win,
(26:38):
you want to know if you lose, your one on one,
if you lose, And then when the second week you're
one on one, it's the same thing. And three quarters
of the league will be right there. So that's what
you gotta hang on too. And we're gonna hear a
ton of what from every team. Hey, we're all about
just this week. We're that's all we're thinking about. But
I think I agree. I think there were some legitimate
concerns raised by how New England played at home in
(27:03):
the opener, all but against an outstanding Kansas City Chief team. Um, okay,
what about the lack of pass rushing the Patriots, how
how do you? How do you? And like, look, I've
talked to NFL people who they all say, and I
know this is kind of what you're reiterating, which is honestly,
with the preseason now, uh, you don't really know what
you have until October one. But there are questions about
(27:25):
their pass rush heading into the game. And the pass
rush did nothing, uh to discredit any of those concerns.
When when you're in that Belichick in that meeting room
with his coaches today, is there a way to fix
it now that we're in September? Well? Always, you know
you that's what your job is. It's okay, well what
do we do with this? How do we generate a
pass rush? But legitimately, and we know that New England's
(27:50):
the best at getting rid of players and they're just
on that edge. We're gonna cost too much and no
matter who they plug in, they're gonna be you know, successful.
But at the end of the day, particularly when you
look at that compared to some other front force, when
you look at this front four, uh, and even the linebackers,
you can lean July, Okay, who do I have to double?
(28:11):
Who do I have to chip the tight end on?
Where do I have to turn my line in terms
of this pressure that that the New England Patriots can
bring compared to say Houston where well, what do you know, boy,
I gotta double. Everybody got a double J J Watt
uh merciless the j d on clowne um. And there's
some teams out there that you have some legitimate concerns
(28:31):
at least somebody. Where do we where do we turn
our line? And you look at the New England Patriots,
and I don't know that we see that guy that
can disrupt the game that you've got to gain, you know,
put your game plan in a position where you know
he's accounted for every play. Brian Bill of our guest
on the doug Otlip Show. Um, and then you can't
see loses there barrier as good as they look now
(28:53):
of a sudden they lose a stud in their defensive backfield. Okay,
let's let's get to Sunday's games. Um. Again, there's some
really good Probably the one that's the most under the
radar because of everything that's happened everywhere else is the Bengals,
who had a disappointing season and they won't have Vonte's
perfect taken on the Ravens. This has been a great
(29:14):
rivalry in the a f C North one, of course,
which you were part of for so long. I do
feel like the Bengals are a little bit under the
radar because Marvin Lewis ism, you know, still a little
bit in the hot seat, and they were so disappointing
last year. Is it me or don't The Bengals have
some of the best talent in the league. They do,
and and you got to know they're gonna rebound. I
(29:34):
agree with you. I mean, there's some great games out
there with Seattle and Green Bay. I love the Oakland
Tennessee matchup. Obviously New York and Dallas. But this is one,
this is an important one. I did the preseason games
for the Baltimore Ravens. First off, their defense is pretty
darn good. Now, they really weren't challenged by who they
played in the preseason, but this is they're They're deep
in their front seven, the secondary of solid. Uh, they're
(29:57):
pretty good offensively. That's this is gonna be interesting because
when you look at the starters, they should be better
than people think with Flacco and you know, receiving group
that you know, Wallace and and Macklin and and uh
you know, hopefully healthy um uh Perriman and Danny Wood
(30:18):
head out of the backfield. But the problem is none
of these guys have played. This is the first time
we're going to see an offensive line that, for the
first time is in the form that it's gonna play
at hopefully all year long. Um we we we haven't
seen Woodhead. We really haven't seen any of these other guys.
Now on paper, it should look like it could be
pretty good. And if Joe Flacco okay, I mean he
(30:40):
didn't take a snap during all training camp, that that's
got to be nerve wracking a little bit. So this
is gonna be interesting to see if indeed they are
okay on in a place on the road where they
have what one in six years you mentioned Tennessee versus
Oakland kind of again another under the radar, sneaky good game. Um,
the Raiders defensive numbers were bad. They have a couple
(31:01):
of defensive stars, but but overall the defense wasn't good.
And one of the things they're kind of getting a
pass on is they won some games in crazy fashion,
you know, going for two uh miss field goals by
the Chargers that should have beat him. Like, look, they
survived some games that if you replayed the very end
of the game it might go the other way. And
then there's Tennessee, who I think most people are in
(31:23):
the league think they were kind. They've they've rebuilt their
roster to where their solid football team. Now, give me
your sense of that game. Well, you gotta be here
with the two young quarterbacks. I love these two young quarterbacks,
Derek Carr and Marcus Mariotta could easily be thirty plus touchdown,
single digit interception guys, they they what changed what was
a pedestrian uh receiving corps And pretty darn good, you know,
(31:48):
getting Eric Decker in free agency. Um, the two draft
choices to go with the Lanny Walker DeMarco Murray running back.
I just love what's going on in Tennessee and open
your right can can the defense be a little bit better?
And now in a division with Kansas City that now
appears to be the team to be Doug out there,
show Fox spport treader. That's the voice of Brian Billick.

off your first SeatGeek purchase. Alright, let's get to the
primetime games. Seattle, who appears loaded and ready to make
another run in the Super Bowl. They went and added
children Richardson. But you have all these personalities and like
I know, Pete's been able to make it work in
the past. Do you like what they've been able to
kind of cobble together to continue to remake that defense.
(32:35):
Oh yeah, yeah, I know they'll stort through it. I
mean that's who they are, and and that you kind
of take on a certain us against the world mentality.
People don't understand that. You know, we're passionate about what
we do. We challenge one another. This is the way
we deal with one another. I get that. Uh And
and that's fine. The problem is to me still, offensively,
(32:55):
you still got some questions. I know, Russell Wilson, a
lot of people think he could have an MVP season.
I don't discount that. I still I'm worried about the
offensive line. I'm a little concerned about the receiving corps. Uh.
You know, it still is semi pedestrian to me from
my money. Um and and Seattle is gonna be good,
don't get me wrong, But but I don't. I don't know.
(33:16):
And as good as they are defensively, they're gonna have
to run the ball a whole lot better, and they're
gonna have an opportunity to do that. We're gonna see
if they can. I think Green Bay I thought Martellis
Bennett was the offseason, pick up a note to me
because you figured you saw and in fact I did
this on our Playbook show on the NFL Network on Wednesday,
Shawn O'Hara and I talked about the fact that that
(33:38):
in New England, the way they utilized him on the
back side opposite Gronk and a Mandola and Edelman and
all that. We'll think about Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers.
Now he's gonna put on a three by one side.
He's gonna have Jordy Nelson who led the league and
touchdown receptions, Davante Adams who was second in the league
and touchdown receptions, Randall Cobb can flip high Montgomery out
of back. They'll know on the act side by the way,
(34:01):
he can have a Martellis Bennett. I think green Bay
is Pois. This is gonna be a great game. I've
got green Bay going to the Super Bowl. Uh. From
the NFC, I think that much of them, it's gonna
be tight. It's wide open in the NFC. Obviously, it's
gonna be a great game. Last one Dallas, who will
have Zekiellett against the Giants, who may or may not
(34:22):
have Odell Beckham Jr. Has Has been at practice but
hasn't practiced with an ankle sprain. He assumed that he goes.
The Giants were the team that could solve the Cowboys
and solve Dak Prescott last year. What about this year? Yeah,
and they did it with pressure. H first game, they
were a little more passive. Dallas was able to convert
on third down. U. They were ten of seventeen. In
(34:45):
the second game, they pressured virtually every down and Dallas
was one of fifteen on third down. Uh, they couldn't
make them pay. I think they're gonna do the same
thing and to try to stifle the run to make
Dak Prescott makes some plays. The difference being I think
Dak Prescott going to Dez Bryant, going to Jason Witten,
uh going to Williams. I told Easley, I think I
(35:07):
think that pressure might pay a little bit more of
a price this time, and I think Dallas will hold up.
Although those were both very tight games. Now I think
Dallas will hold up much better. Great stuff, Brian Billy.
You can see him on the NFL Network. Use his

pick some of that knowledge from your brain. Appreciate being
(35:29):
our guests on Fox Sports Radio. Sounds great, Doug Gatlum Show,
Fox Sports Radio. The Patriots weren't the only disappointed thing
in the last night's game. I'll tell you what else
was a bit of a letdown that up coming next?
What True Car. You can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
new or used. Visit True Car to enjoy more confident
(35:50):
car buying experience. Ryan Adams tweets the show at Grizzled Bees.
What was so disappointed by the Chiefs victory? I'm stoked
about it? Uh lost Eric Barry for the year torn
achilles tenant. That one sucks that poor guy, big cancer,
torn a c l now an achilles tendon. Man, the
(36:11):
guy's got how many ladders did he walk under? Just
the worst luck ever for an awesome dude. I feel all,
I really, I don't legitimately feel bad for guys, many
guys that suffer sports injuries. Like I'm like, hey, look,
that's kind of part of the deal. When you go
through what Eric Berry has gone through. That just that's thanks.
(36:31):
Thanks man thinks should have seen it coming. You know
why I'm psychic? S This is game ties on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. It's a Friday. You ain't got nothing
to douce here, sequestered here, sit here, listen to us
(36:52):
play a game. That game is called psychic. Am I right? Psychic?
It's a Friday. That's where the psychic appears, right, yes, alright, Doug,
Although you were psychic, you called the Chiefs to win.
I believe to dominate in the fourth quarter. Last nothing
in the fourth quarter alone? The eight math was a
(37:12):
lot of points. Was last night that the Chiefs were
getting so that appealing? Um? What wasn't appealing? TV ratings
for last night's Chief's Patriots game down twelve percent from
last year's Panthers Broncos opener, which was actually down from
so psychic. Will this trend continue throughout the regular season
of ratings being down? No? No, Apparently the cable news
(37:35):
ratings and the Weather channel ratings are way up. One
because North Korea has got led by a crazy person. Frankly,
I think we might actually be led by a crazy
person to anyway. Um. And then uh uh, And then
then there's the hurricane Hurricane Irma. Here's the thing about
Hurricane Irma, right one off your floor, like get out.
(37:56):
It's not like unless you're an inlid and you can't
move like that one. I feel sorry for you. But
if you have the means, like get the hell out,
get out, get out, go, just go get like the
fairest end the fairest Bueller's day off, leave, go home,
get out of here. Um. But I don't I don't
understand the sticking in staying with the like the hurricane
(38:16):
is very slow moving thing. Here, you can track the
thing on your phone. You can go drink. Who are
these people who weren't watching the football game last night?
I didn't know they exist? In Providence they had the
highest ratings, of course, in Kansas City and Boston high
ratings as well, but across the board a little bit
lower casey is not a big national draw, and Patriots
are kind of a love hate thing too, So it's
(38:38):
not like the Packers, Um, the Steelers and the Cowboys.
Those are America's teams. Really psychic. The NFL is he's
the rules on touchdown celebrations this season, but the taunting
rules still exists so well. Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill
receiver fine for giving the peace sign or deuces sign
on his way to the end zone. Shouldn't He shouldn't
(38:58):
because that was cool, right, I'm his ass him. It
was like he, do you remember the cartoon um gummy bears? No,
he used to drink gummy berry juice and they can allogist,
they bounce all over the place. It was like he
or have an r C cart? Did you play r
C cart in old Nis tutendo? Remind yeah a little bit.
You're like cats and you could press the nitrous button
(39:18):
go super fast. It was like he had the nitrous button.
They should not and they will not. New Saints running
back Adrian Peterson told reporters he spent ten thousand dollars
a week of his own money for treatment and rehab
to come back from the torminiscus. It is in the
last season, in the end psychic. Will it be money
well spent for Adrian Peterson? He's in the NFL, isn't he? Yes,
that's money. Will spent spent ten thousand dollars investment in
(39:41):
yourself in order to get ready and be on a team.
Now that's good. That's money. Will spent According to the
Athletic Cavs guard as Aiah Thomas dealing with more than
a terran is injured hip. So psychic will at any
point Isaiah Thomas of the eighteen season be the Asaiah
Thomas we saw last season? Nope, No, no, the times
we saw last season was put in a great position
(40:02):
on picking rolls and on on special sets by Brad Stevens.
He doesn't have Brad Stevens, and that he has a
completely different makeup team. And he's got this bad hip
which could keep himut half the season if he gets
it operated on. If he doesn't, he's gonna deal with
the fact that, uh, the reoccurring pain is gonna make
it hard for him to play consistently, as he kept
him out of the last two playoff games. All right,
(40:23):
and finally we end with this all you hear that psychic?
Lakers rookie Alonso Ba released his first official single here
it is mellow Ball one and oh to his youngest
brother LaMelo. So psychic, what will Alonzo at first and
All Star birth Grammy or number one hit? He won't
(40:47):
have a Grammy, won't have a number one hit, So
I guess an all star birth is the most likely
of them because he's not getting going, not feeling this, no,
even though I felt it, Like you know, hard doesn't
win a Grammy, And how hard is to get a
number one hit? What number one hit would probably be
second most likely, just because you can have all your
(41:08):
boys download the music. What about if he teamed up
with bad Boy twenty years ago? Would that be you
could see, you know, Mace being thrown into this. Are
you really going, Mace? That's is game time on the
Duck Gottlieb Show, what happened yesterday at Texas A and
(41:31):
M is ultimately the downfall of A and M's future.
I'll tell you why next in the Dug Gotlip Show.
What off Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, here's
a congrats that's with a question mark. Antonio Carimardi welcomed
(41:52):
in his fourteenth child to the world third since having
a vasectomy, ingrats right to grats. I mean, come on, dude,
like the whole idea of a vasectomy, you have to
go get it, check to see if it takes. And
after you have one kid after the vasectomy, well obviously
(42:13):
it didn't work. You gotta go get it checked up
again back for another cut. I guess I don't know.
Doug Gottlieb show here live and direct from the City
of angels Um. Look, I told people all week that
don't be alarmed at the craziness of Texas A and M.
(42:36):
This is who they are traditionally over the past twenty years,
basically a five and you know five team within conference
play in the Big twelve in the SEC. The exception
is occasionally they have a really really good year occasionally
and some other mitigating factors have to have to go
in their favor. Um. But Kevin Sumlin is squarely on
(43:02):
the hot seat, mostly because his new athletic director placed
him on that hot Seat's got eleven million dollar buy
out and then this really really disturbing post from his wife.
People of two thousand and seventeen, tell me how any
part of this is okay? And to and to the center.
Did it occur to you that my child may open it?
Hashtag or else? What? Uh? It's a letter to address
(43:24):
to Kevin someone's home from I believe the Houston Country
Club is the return addressed and why they put a
return address? And everything I've seen on Twitter from people
said it must be a woman's handwriting. I don't know
if that's a woman's handwriting or dude's handwriting on her own. Uh,
you suck as a coach, You're a N word and
(43:45):
can't win, Please get lost or else. That's addressed to
Kevin Subone. Well, I thought letter writing was dead, right,
I did. But I also thought that this type of
racism was was dead. So, uh, congrats, I don't. Here's
(44:09):
but the part that no one has talked about that
we talked a little bit about it earlier this week
is what changed when Kevin someone came to Texas A
and M. Was he made it cool? Like Texas A
and M is a classically uncool school to anybody who
thinks of themselves is cool and hip. Like the difference
in uh, Texas and Texas A and M could not
(44:33):
be more stark. It could not. Texas is in Austin.
Austin is in but not of Texas. Can you understand
what that means? It's like Vanderbilt is in but not
of the SEC. Right, Like Vanderbilt not great looking woman,
totally dedicated to academics, better in hoops than they are
(44:54):
in football. They're in the SEC, but they're not really
an SEC type of school in terms of the poe
becus of that university. And I said that kind of kidding.
Austin in a in a really really conservative state like Texas,
Austin is a super liberal town. Six Street is a
great party area. Uh. College Station is a small town.
(45:19):
They have a big agg program, they have a huge
there's the uh, there's a big core. Uh. You know,
a big part of the university is the core. So
with that mine and remember A and M for a
long time was an all boys school. Um, and so
(45:42):
with that might like there's been a lot of changes
at A and M to where they've tried. They've tried,
and it's the fourth largest American university, got fifty six
thousand students. Fifty six thousand students. But the part that's
been missing is it's not a place where one is
(46:04):
seen as cool. It's kind of seen as a cult
if you're outside of it. And secondly, it ain't really
cool for black kids to go to College Station, Texas
when they could go to Austin, when they go to
Baton Rouge, when even Tuscaloosa because of the success, but
it's just it's just not seen as a cool and frankly,
(46:27):
Kevin someone changed that not only is the first black
football coach, but it's just somebody who has a uh
a great way about him where he's kind of welcoming
to lots of people. Like I don't know if he's
a great coach. I do think he's a really good guy,
and I think he's broken down a lot of barriers
there without without having to do this sheer brute force,
(46:51):
and perception becomes reality. Perception becomes reality. And I will
tell you that the perception that has always been like
I don't know, black athletes are really welcomed down at
Texas A and M. Like Texas and M is one
of those when my dad went to Texas and M,
(47:11):
my brother in Texas A, M. I'm gonna go to
those of the kids that go to Texas A and M.
It's not really you're not really choosing between Texas, Texas
A and M. But in sports, you are sports, you're
choosing between all these SEC schools, all these big twelve schools,
and like, look, I get it. Oklahoma had a racist
chant from a universe from from a fraternity and they
(47:34):
ran that fraternity off campus right away. So I do
think that some of this does I obviously know some
of this does exist. But this is terrible for the
perception of A and M who's been fighting this for
a long time and someone has helped fix a lot
of it and made it cool and welcoming, and now
(47:54):
it ain't right. I mean, because here's the way a
decision is made. Coach comes in, sits with you and
sits with your mom with your dad, or your mom
and your dad, or sits with you in your high
school football coach and says like, I'm gonna take care
of you for the next four years. You know, I'm
gonna make sure look after your son, turn him from
(48:17):
a void to a man, etcetera, etcetera. But because this
has become such a viral story and it shouldn't and
look good for Charlene, someone like, don't pocket this and
use this Tony. She got it, she put it out
on And obviously people feel terrible. And I still believe
that racism, that that pure racist that you're talking about
(48:37):
a very small less than one percent of our culture.
People that say Washington are more prevalent than people that
are real racist. Nowadays, they may have people may have
racial bias um, but I think, like pure hardcore racist.
I could be wrong. I think they're dying out, right.
I hope they're dying out. But now, if you're black
(49:02):
kid from Dallas or black kid from Houston, you're like,
why would I go there? You lose a game? And
this is how fans think about you. And I'll grant
you there's probably the same amount of racism at Texas,
where there had to be a certain amount of race
that led Charlie Charlie Strong to losing his job just
three years in. There not a black coach at at
(49:26):
L s U or an Alabama, Oh Miss Oklahoma or
Oklahoma State. Right, it's not like but the idea that
this people have always thought that there was a greater
part of the culture at A and M. Like this
and how Kevin Somelan has been treated and this letter.
(49:46):
You want to talk about doing untold harm to a
university you think you love. That's what this so called
van did in a just in a disgraceful fashion. Good
luck with that one at M. Good luck all right.
Two times Super Bowl champion Chris snee joins the show
(50:06):
up coming next. He's a former giant. I'll ask him
about this week's g Man g Man's game against the
against the Dallas Cowboys. I also want to ask him
about Eli Manning, who's kind of been a little bit
all over the map and a set interception prone guy,
but a guy who has a ton of weaponry. What
(50:27):
sneeze thoughts are on Eli's longevity? Eli has never been hurt.
Get some good NFC stuff plus Eagles skins this weekend.
Eagles skins this weekend. You see, skins are a home
dog to the Eagles that up coming next. But first,
are you hiring? Do you know where to post a
(50:47):
job to find the best candidates. There's my I said
for my buddy across the street starting a business. I
think it opens next week, and he's telling me, like
the hardest things not finding people who won't we're finding
our people's finding what work for a qualified for the
job you want them for. And I turned and said
to him, when I'm gonna tell you now, easy, easy fix.

and enjoying more confident car buying experience. Doug Alli Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I am not going to the this
weekend is a perfect example of why I'm not really
(52:12):
go to the game guy right now. I do think
it's important that people like me go to games during
the season. You get to you talk with coaches, general
managers or assistant coaches and recruiting guys off its college football.
You get a chance to kind of see things in person.
I think you need to go some and I think fans,
it's the same thing, like go see a game or
(52:35):
two games. Remember how much you love seeing this the
sport in person? Basketball, football, baseball, whatever. But but this
is the perfect weekend of the why I'm not going
to the game? Guy? Like, for example, UM s C.
Stanford is this weekend. But if you go, I the
process of getting ready to go tailgating whatever, you miss
(52:57):
out on all of the other games. So even if
your game is a great and epic game, you won't
have watched all the other games. You're like, well, I
can go home and watch him on DVR. Yeah, that's
not the same. Right now, Clemson Auburn is this weekend.
Me and my little guy, we gotta go to Clemson
sometimes soon. We we love just the idea of Howard's
(53:17):
Rock and Death Valley and Clemson Taggers and taken out
Auburn like that just sounds like a good time. But
I'd be torn about going this week because you got
Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame Georgia. UM he has so
many good games and on Sunday, the game's a little
bit more spaced out, but it's the first Sunday to
(53:38):
what you're on red zone. You're like, I don't have
to move. I can watch every single game. But if
I give you one game you could go to. Pick one.
There's Seattle, Green Bay, any game NFL college. I gave
you one. I remember you got Seattle, Green Bay, lambeau Field,
but it doesn't it fall has l or whatever in
(54:01):
Green Bay, Wisconsin. So it'll be brisk, beautiful, like seventy
degrees that kick off. It sounds like there's a great
day to watch football, but there is something too, like
I kind of if a lambo. I kind of want
to be a little bit cold. I don't want to
be like freezing, but I I don't know. I give
you one game you could go to. What would be
(54:25):
music I would go to? I think I would go
college and it would be Oklahoma Ohio State. Um, okay,
why uh the I've I've been to a couple of
college games before, but I haven't ever been to Yeah,
exactly what I would consider like like the biggest, most
(54:48):
major more college environment I've been to is probably a
game at University of Arizona, where it's pretty you know,
but That's what I'm saying, Like I've never been to
like a traditional like I've never been to the University
of Michigan skills everyone. Yeah, so that's what I'm saying.
Like for me, I'm like, I want to go to
what you would consider like a blue blood college, big
(55:10):
time game on a Saturday. Yeah. Oh look how to
State Oklahoma will probably you know. I have been to Clemson. Um,
I've been to just about every other one. I've been
to l s. You've been it was great, Alabama great, Ah,
I haven't Auburn. I got a buddy who has a
buddy has a suite at Auburn. Andrews says, that's why
(55:32):
you till getting next to somebody with the TV set
up on Sunday. But once you're in the once you're
in the stadium and you can't do anything about it.
You can't watch all the games like you're on Twitter,
and you know sometimes phones don't work in stadiums. I
missed it. I don't know. I'll like, I'll tell you.
I mean, I guess if I was going to go
to a game this week. The one thing about like
(55:53):
the Sunday night game is you're not missing any other game.
But the problem is that, like that's a now are
outside of Dallas parking in the stadium. There's not much
atmosphere in that place, Like you just better off watching
at home. Chris ni joins US former Giant Super Bowl
champion Doug Gotlip show Fox Sports Radio. Do you ever
(56:15):
go to games anymore? Uh? What's a while ago. I'll
go and uh do the pregame stuff, and then I
will head on back and watch it from my couch. No, no,
that no, So that's not going to a game. That's
head on back and and watch it from your couch.
Do you ever, I guess it can be hard to
watch in person. It's long. You don't get the play
(56:37):
by player, the color in your ear, and then the
reviews and you're just kind of sitting there like it
really isn't that greatest sport to watch in person? You know,
it's still it's difficult for me because I'm watching it
from a different perspective. Still goes just sometimes I'm still
out there and easily get frustrated, you know, when I
key and on the offensive line, for instance, It's uh,
(56:58):
it can be frustrating to be there and not be
able to help at all. Okay, see speaking of offensive line,
Brady wasn't great last night. How much of it was him?
How much of it was his line? I didn't really
you know, break it down that closely, but uh, any
any good lineman will say was their fault. So I'm
sure that they're looking at themselves closely. And I mean it. Listen,
(57:20):
Never is a phenomenal quarterback and if you give him time,
they'll do great things with the ball. So I think
that's where it's all got to start for them. And listen,
they're the model of consistency, so they will they'll figure
a way to fix things. Okay, you mentioned like mentioned
being alignement obviously a two times Roup Bowl champing at
four time Pro Bowler and All Pro even a second
team All Pro. Christie our guest on the Doug Gottlip
(57:42):
Show here on Fox Sports Radio Sunday Night. Football Giants
the one team to beat DAC twice, taken on the
Dallas Cowboys. Now everyone talks about their line, about the
Cowboys line, What about the Giants line struggle to run
the ball last year, but they have so many weapons
throwing the football. How is this line come to gather
from your perspective in the preseason, well, I mean it's
(58:05):
a it's still a work in progress. You know, they
have I think you have certain guys that are playing
to their full potential. Many of other guys that are
still trying to you know, all right, not there technique
or assignments and uh, you know, really aren't up to
where the expectations are. But I do think that, you know,
if they have I think they'll be able to run
the ball against the Dallas front, that's for sure. I think, um, yeah,
(58:30):
that's that's an area where they can you know, they
can get the season started on the right note. And uh,
you know build up confidence which in the run when
it comes to run in the run game, especially up
the front. You know, if if you have success early on,
that'll translate you you'd be a little build off of
that if the season goes along all right. Then on
the other side, the Cowboys have an incredible offensive line,
but they've always struggled with like when the Giants are
(58:50):
really good, regardless of coach, regardless of scheme, it's kind
of always the same. Right, they've been able to get
after the quarterback with four Does this team have that
ability to get after the quarterback with four Oh no question.
You're talking about the Giants past, Oh no question. That
that defense. Uh you know what what they did last
(59:14):
year and having you know everyone back this year. Uh,
you know, the pressure off the edge Jpp. You know
it's playing the way he was a couple of years ago. Uh,
you know Vernon. Then you have the pluggers in the middle. Um.
You know, then they have guys that they rotated, rotated
off the bench. I could start on the team. So uh,
they will absolutely get after the quarterback and that defense
(59:35):
will keep them in every game. This is the ten
year anniversary right of the oh seven Super Bowl champion.
That's that's just flown by Yeah. So okay, so now
it's ten years removed. What do you remember most? I
gotta be holding that trophy after the game. You know,
(59:56):
it was it was kind of a whirlwin, you know,
the first time winning a Super Bowl and everything just
happened so quickly after the game. But you know, I feel,
you know, I feel like I remember every part of it,
you know, from come home, the trophy to locker room
into the you know, the parade and the celebration. It
was all all stuff. That's uh, you know, really coming
(01:00:18):
to come back in my memory. And I'm sure you know,
starting next weekend, we'll have you know, a long weekend
of events together and a lot of guys, a lot
of the guys I haven't seen in a long time,
so all the stories will come out, and uh, you know,
it'll really be a fun weekend reminisce because I mean
that was just an incredible team that we all like
each other, and we we genuinely like each other and
play hard for each other, and that was I think
(01:00:39):
of a big reason why we had the success that
we did. You mentioned next week, you guys are gonna
honor Michael Strahan. Okay, who's gonna be honored of course,
But you're also using uh the tenure anniversary to help
raise money to fight childhood cancer. How are you doing it? Well?
I mean, you hit our We came together as a
(01:01:00):
team to win the Super Bowl, and now we're all
coming together again to you know, shinn a spot spotlight
on childhood cancer and to raise money to help families.
So um, you know, I obviously I'm very close with
the Jay Fund, and uh, you know it's hard to
believe that you know, this past year mark the anniversary
of Jay's passing. But um, you know, just the money
(01:01:21):
they've raised, the money the Jay Fund is raised, and
the families they have helped has been tremendous. And uh,
you know, to have the support of the New York
Giants and all the uh the alumni for this event
will be uh will be a great thing. And then
you know, to honor a guy like Michael Strahan, who
is you know, probably in my mind, the best, uh
best leader I've been around when it comes to a player. Um,
(01:01:42):
he had the ability to you know, capture everyone, you know,
different personalities and uh, everyone listened to what Michael said.
So that'll be that'll be the kick off to a
fun weekend. And uh, you know, really quo Us, you
mentioned leadership obviously quarterback position of leadership you played with Eli.
Eli has come through in big in big games, although
at times, you know, the team has struggled to get
(01:02:04):
to the playoffs. Consistently while he's been the quarterback, what's
your sense of like he's never hurt, Like he just
he just doesn't miss the start? You kind of solid,
pretty consistent, although he's had a couple of years high
turnover numbers. What are your thoughts on where he is
in the lifespan of his career. I still think he's
got a couple of good years after him. I really do.
I think, uh, yeah, you you hit on the certain
(01:02:27):
years where he had the high interception rate, and for me,
those are years that we didn't protect very well. And
I think, uh, in this system is the now the
balls out in a hurry, and he has, you know,
dynamic playmakers that most quarterbacks would die for. So he's
got you know, a guy a little doubt where you
can hit on a you know, a quick plan. He's
gone seventy yards, so um, you know, the offense, the
(01:02:50):
system here is in has definitely extended his career and
he's he's asked the parrot of a quarterback that you'll
find you know guy, it's the video junkie and uh,
you know really takes pride in that. So uh, I
mean that's comforting for for everyone on that team, especially offense,
knowing that your quarterback is I've seen every look of
defense has presented. Last thing, Chris, obviously you were in
(01:03:12):
college during September eleven, but you're a giant and it
I've tried to explain to people that, like, look, September
eleven is just different. And I understand and respect people's
right to protest. I like Monday night, I I don't
think it's an appropriate time to protest. What are your
thoughts to somebody who um, obviously like we lived your
(01:03:36):
young adult through September eleven, but you're also a New
York giant understood it's different in that city. It's a
different moment because it's September eleven. Is it in fact
different in regards to protesting the flag on that day?
That's yeah, that's obviously it's a very controversial. And you know,
my standpoint is it's just something that you know that
(01:03:58):
I wouldn't It's not the way in which I would
go about it, you know. But yeah, I'm trying to
say this correctly. But everyone you know does it in
their own way, and but something that I would not do. Um,
And that's you know, that's really as that one, all right, man.
I know it's a tough one. Listen, you can go
hashtag chaps for children hashtags s B forty two UH
(01:04:21):
It's t c J fund they raised over help helped
raise over nine million dollars to UH with financial support
to families fighting childhood cancer. It's a great thing. Enjoy
the honoring the ceremonies next weekend. We appreciate you joining
us on Fox Sports Radio. Thank you, ramos Um. Where
(01:04:41):
were you during September eleven? I was running the audio
board for a local l A radio station and I
was the morning uh tech producer for the show. And
what was what was it like in Los Angeles? Was
in Oklahoma at the time. Wasn't like. It was pretty
hair ball. The only time I've ever activated the yes
ever as reading an audio board. And I wasn't afraid
(01:05:03):
because my wife was asleep at the time because it
was early in the morning here in Los Angeles. Uh,
that's something was gonna happen here in l A. So
I was like, it's something, you know, is this just
the beginning to something else? So it was pretty terrible,
but you know, I was working, so we had to
stay there and we had to do our job. No,
I was, I was working to it. What happened with
me was I was driving. I was fill in radio
host in Oklahoma City. I was living in Stillwater. I'd
(01:05:24):
come back from playing overseas living and still Warts like
an hour drive from maybe a little bit less fifty
minute drive from my house to the station, and I
remember turning it on and the first plane had hit
sometime somehow sometime early in my drive, and they were
reporting on it, and I thought it was like a
spoof on War of the World, Like that's what I
(01:05:44):
honestly thought. Um where, I was like, well, this is
some kind of spoof thing. Whenever I turned off the
RADI and turned on some music and I was driving
and then I pull in and I go upstairs to
the sixth floor of this is w w LS, is
sports and radio station in Oklahoma, and the second planet
hit the towers, Like oh, well, this is actually real.
And then I was watching and I was getting ready
(01:06:06):
to go on air and I and then I saw
a tower come down, and obviously shortly and we had
to stay because we were doing cut ins on ABC
News on the radio, and our cut ins were basically
trying to keep people calm and to discourage people from
gouging others in gas prices, because the gas prices had
gone from you know, like two dollars to like eleven
(01:06:27):
twelve dollars a gallon, and you know, people have people
are freaking out look, we'll talk about more about this Monday.
And I do think I think I think one of
the things Kristni got to which I would agree with
is I don't believe I would not protest the flag,
no matter how disheartened I am at the leadership or
(01:06:48):
at things going on. I think the flag represents something
different to me. I understand that other people have other opinions. Okay, um,
I just I do. That would not be acceptable. Honestly,
if I was a coach, just because I would, I
would say, hey, listen, I'll give you a platform to
speak your mind. I don't think this is the time
to express that platform. But September eleven is different. And
(01:07:13):
because those of us who are old enough to have
lived through it understood what that flag stood for, the
solidarity it stood for at the moment. And so while
I will say any NFL player has the right to
kneel before the during the flag ceremony, during the Star
Spangled banner this weekend, I don't think. I don't think
(01:07:34):
they should. I think it is absolutely the wrong thing
to do it on Monday, absolutely because the flag means
something different on that day. All Right, we'll check in
with Oklahoma's they get ready to take on the Sooners.
Can they turn around what happened to them last year
where they were just I felt like they're out talented.
We'll go to Baltimore preview. To me, the most interesting
(01:07:56):
game that's that's kind of under the radar this weekend.
Baltimore Cincinnati. We've got some guys in those towns. But
first let's check in with Dan Byro with the later
quick look back from last night's Chiefs went over the
New England Patriots. The Chiefs lost lost safety Eric Berry
for the season, ruptured his achilles tended in that win.
It's the third time in his career that he'll miss
(01:08:17):
a majority of the season. Three years ago, he was
diagnosed with cancer. Six years ago, Berry missed most of
the year with a torn a. C L TV ratings
for last night's Chiefs Patriots opener actually down twallford cent
from last year's Panthers Broncos opener in Denver. Miami Dolphins
are flying to California and spending the week in l
A escaping Hurricane Irma. Dolphins in their Week one game
(01:08:38):
against the Bucks postponed, and in Week two will face
the Chargers in l A. Giants wide receiver O'Dell Beckham Jr.
Will Be questionable to play against the Cowboys on Sunday
with an ankle injury. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton questionable to
go against the Niners with a shoulder injury. However, the
Panthers expect Newton to start that game. The series between
the Yankees and Raised in St. Petersburg on Monday through
(01:08:59):
Wednesday is gonna be moved to City Field in New York.
Hurricane Irma is forcing the move as the Rays will
remain the home team as they play at the home
of the Mets. According to the Athletic Caves guards Ayah
Thomas dealing with more than a terran is injured hip.
As the report says, Thomas is dealing with a loss
of cartilage and a threatis in that hip. And at
the US Open Men's Semifinals just getting underway as Kevin
Anderson is taking Pablo Karina Busta right now in the semifinals,
(01:09:21):
Raphael and A Doll against one Martin del Potro coming
up a little bit later today, Doug, he did a deal,
a good deal Portroa. It's one of the only few
that I can do del Potroux? Is that right? John Rowlis?
Is that good for you? Sounds good to me? Perfect?
Why did you? Why did you? Why did you ask ROMs?
Because John speaks fluent Spanish? I know, I mean, I
just I didn't want to make sure. Actually can't speak
(01:09:43):
a look of it. So probably not as much as
you think. You you're assuming here, like you're assuming like
there's some racial bias because your last name for almost
I'm asking you like it's it's an honest question because
I don't know what's real and what's not used to
pun buyer, not anything else, just a little bit. Yeah,
(01:10:04):
usually like like again, you guys are all both being
so sarcastic. I don't know what's true. John Robbos, can
you speak Spanish? Not fluently? Okay, all right, so we're
probably you probably speak a little bit better than me.
But I'm I'm actually decent. I com brandy mucho muco. Uh.
You know what, I know a lot about a couple
(01:10:27):
of big games, but other guys know more. I got
guys where people know more. Uh, let's start with Ryan
aber Super. We don't know everything, but we know people
that know what you want to know. You know it
sounds like you meet a guy, I got a guy.
(01:10:47):
Ryan Aber is Sooner's beat writer for the Oklahoman. Oh
you last year stomped by Ohio State in Norman He
Now they head up to the Shoe with thirty three
year old new head coach in Lincoln Higley take on
Irban Meyer. But look, Oklahoma looked great in their opener.
Ohio State kind of sketch in the first half of
their opener, Ryan, what's different about the Sooners this year
(01:11:10):
to last year other than the coaching, other than the
head coach, outside of the coaching, and Lincoln Riley's thirty
four actually turned thirty four a couple of days ago,
so I don't sell them short. But their offensive line
is a whole lot better than it was a year
ago when they got blown out. That was really the
start of the transformation of the offensive line, as they
had to shuffle some things around with some injuries. And
(01:11:30):
their secondary is in a whole lot better shape than
it was a year ago, as they had to go
through four or five different cornerbacks before they finally settled
on one that could get the job done. That said that,
this team also does not have Edie Westbrook. It doesn't
have some J. P. Ryan and it doesn't have Joe Mixon.
So there are some big time playmakers missing on the
(01:11:51):
offensive side of the ball for the Sooners as well.
All right, so what about what about the defensive side?
Ohio State? Still the thought is they're gonna struggle to
push the ball on field with JT. Barrett, but they
got tons of speed, speed the backfield and speed out wide.
What about the Oklahoma defense? Well, the Oklahoma defense is
moving to more of a foreman front after being in
(01:12:11):
the three four all of last year. Now, they didn't
show much of it a week ago against you tep,
but you would expect much more of that against the Buckeyes.
Like I said, their secondary is a whole lot better
than it was a year ago. But the big question
marked to me in this game is the freshman mettal
linebacker for the Sooners, Kenneth Murray. He's very athletic, He's
(01:12:31):
going to be a really good player. But to throw
a guy who's playing in a second collegiate game into
an environment like that where a mental linebacker is so
big and stopping the run. After what we saw J. K.
Dobbins do last week, Ohio State gets Mike weberback, that's
gonna be a pretty tall order for a US defense.
Baker Mayfield was unbelievable to start the game. But how
(01:12:53):
is this outside of the personnel? Is the offense different
than the previous incarnations that Lincoln Riley has designed for him. No,
it's pretty well the same thing that Lincoln Riley was
calling the last couple of years, and that's by design.
Bob Stoops stepped down at a point where he felt
the program was in really good shape, the offense was
in really good shape that there didn't need to be
(01:13:15):
a whole lot of tinkering going on before the next
head coach got there. Yes, there are small things that
Lincoln Riley is doing differently, but for the most part,
this is the same program that Bob Stoops uh coach
last year in the same offense. Because a go all.
Ryan Aber Sooner's beat writer from the Oklahoma and he'll
be up and see bus watching the Sooners take on
the Buckeyes at r y Aber is his Twitter handle
(01:13:37):
if you want to know everything that's going on with
the Crimson and Cream. Ryan, thanks so much for joining us.
I appreciate it. Doug I got a guy. Jeff Rebec
joins Us Ravens, beat writer for the Baltimore Son. Jeff,
you know, nationally, I think everybody's talking about the Cowboys
and the Giants, the Packers and the Seahawks. But in
division this has been an unbelievable rivalry, one of the
(01:13:59):
two or three great rivals just in this division alone.
Give me your sense of the Ravens. We haven't seen
Flacco in the preseason. What should we expect from him
against a very good defense, granted missing Vontes perfect with
the Bengals to start the season. Yeah, you know, true,
Flacco's ten straight season opener, but this has to be
(01:14:22):
the most difficult one in terms of his lack of
preparation this offseason. He's gonna wind up practicing four times
and then having to walk throughs uh. Since the mandatory
mini came back in June. And it's not just camp.
Perriman hasn't played in the preseason. Woodheads fairly played preseason
starting regards the best offensive line. Marshall Yonda hasn't played.
(01:14:46):
I mean you could think that fairly plays in the preseason.
So a huge challenge, uh for Flacco. You know, obviously
He's not gonna be dent regardless of what they're gonna say. Um,
and you know, I would suspect that their defense for
the first couple of weeks is is kind of keeping names,
(01:15:09):
you know, some of the new weapons that they have likes,
and then they started being chemistry because right now he's happened,
a little bit of the tough broke, especially in the
Sunday work never played as well, because all right, Jeff,
I'm sorry, but he sounds like does Jeff sa you
back for the Ravens beat right from Baltimore Sunny sounds
(01:15:29):
like Max Headrome and I my two, that's that too
much of a dated reference. Music has no idea who
Max Headroom is. Transformers would be another good one if
you want to get a lot closer in out it
is that did sound like Transformers. Very nice Ramos music.
If I said he sounds like Max Headroom, do you
have any idea who Max Headroom is? No clue? I'm
old that happened. That that really happened. Wow, really really
(01:15:57):
really happened. Man. Everyone was in pressed with the Chiefs
last night, well almost everyone. I'll explain next what true
car you can find out? What other people in your
area paid for the same car you're looking for new
or used visit True Car to enjoy more confident car
buying experience. Spent the last five minutes trying to explain
(01:16:20):
who Max Pedrom was to Ryan Music The weirdest, most
confusing Max Headroom. I watched about I don't know, John,
would you say about two minutes of it on YouTube?
Wait way to invest time? There don't even I still
don't even like understand what they were trying to accomplish.
It was supposed to be a representation of what like
a futuristic artificial intelligence hosts, sports host or radio host
(01:16:43):
or whatever host would be and like you know, perfect hair,
perfect looks whatever, Max Headroom at Max Headroom, And I
think it was supposed to be like a video DJ
was originally MTVS kind of like uh spoof compit kind
of and it kind of spun off into his life
its own. It was not made into a movie, like
(01:17:04):
so many bits from Saturday Live are made into which
you're like, wait, this is basically a bit they made
a new movie. It's way too long. Was it like
really popular? Yeah for a short period time. Yeah, Yeah,
MTV used to be really popular. People used to watch
the music video, like what year was? What year was
the Thriller video? Do you do? You do you remember
(01:17:25):
somewhere in there? Thriller came out in eighty three? Right, yeah,
but the video wasn't. I don't think the video is
AD three. Like the video was long, and it was
it was December of eighty three. It came out and
fourteen minutes long. And like, here's what you have to know, Ryan,
Like people used to like set their clocks around, like, oh,
the Thriller videos on tonight, and you'd go home or
(01:17:48):
you'd be and you watch. You didn't have like Twitter
or anything else, Like there was a life before Twitter,
life before Twitter. Man, you guys, this is an honest
you know what. We might get two skips take on
the Kanci Chiefs or not. This is really important. I
was telling a friend yesterday, I don't think they'll ever
(01:18:08):
be a show like Seinfeld or like Friends ever again. Um.
And here's why I'm not against network TV shows. I
still watch them, but there are few and far between,
and none of them are a thing like there used
to be a thing for network TV shows Like my
House with my parents, we watched Cosby show Thursdaynight was
(01:18:30):
like Cosby Show, and then there was like a different
world or what all the the and we watched Cheers.
We were a Cheers family. That was our favorite show.
And then as you got older you got into like
it became a Friends, right Friends, and then Seinfeld is
I think as are more popular now maybe than even
when it was out. Um, but who watches network TV?
(01:18:53):
And when you watch network TV now you watch like
reality shows. I like this is us. I feel like
a parent watching this. This is just an amazing it's
thought like parenthood. If you're a parent, you're like not
in your head right now, if you're not, apparently, like
why would ever watch that? It sounds like a total
downer Anyway. I don't think there'll ever be a show
like Friends ever again, because Friends was super popular once
(01:19:15):
you were like high school, aid high school into college age.
Everybody watched it into like early twenties. That was about
just out of college in New York City, living with
a bunch of roommates, dating whatever, like those shows. There's
never going to be another show like that because there'll
never be another network show. And like Netflix shows you
binge watch, so it's not like you're waiting for next
week's episode to drop. Yeah, I think I think you're
(01:19:39):
actually agree with you on this. All of the most
popular shows now are either on some form of a
cable network HBO, like the Game of Thrones exactly. The
the most popular shows are not network TV shows, right,
so I and I don't know whether they'll be, but
they'll be another like rom Um, like it was with Friends, right,
(01:20:02):
we were on a break, you know, an old lobster thing,
like she's my lobster. When I say lobster, do you
know what that mean? Refers to no, you have no
idea music? Do you know what I mean? Promise? Do
you know what the lobster thing was? I don't know
what the lobster thing is? That friends, Friends, friends, I
do Phoebe Phoebe telling the story about how lobsters they
only have one meet, right, so you only have one
(01:20:22):
lobster in this world, one person that's your lobster. I do.
I did watch a fair amount of Friends, but that
one I don't remember the Yeah, that we were on
a break, that we were on a break. If you
think about it, it's almost like it's just the idea
that Ross could get Jen Aniston come on, a TV show.
Sports is really what is the most popular, widely watched
(01:20:46):
thing on network television. Yes, that's what. That's why network
what's really live events, and sports is the most readily
occurring live events. And that's why you're seeing so many
of these. Uh, there's like everybody has an award show.
Do you know what? Nobody has an award show because
people tune in because of the live event because you
can't DVR it, right, you can't go back. Although people
(01:21:07):
have realized like now there's always an award show, Like
I can't even keep up anymore, and those ratings have
started dip, just like sports ratings have started to kind
of plateau. So real quickly, let's get to what the
Fox great last night? Will they make the playoffs? Here's
skip Bayliss. This is the most I've been out on
the limb, maybe in years. But I got the new
(01:21:28):
Los Angeles Chargers playing in their rinky Deank High School
stadium winning the a f C West in a shocker
because I love their defense and I liked their offense.
I'm gonna stick by my gut before last night, which
was I didn't have Kansas City in my a F
c playoffs. Well, look here here is here's what I
like about the Chargers. I like what they are quarterbacks,
(01:21:50):
actually like their offense, more like their defense because their
offense has a ton of weapons, but we don't know
if their offensive line can protect and if they can
stay healthy, something that hasn't happened. The Chiefs have a huge,
huge win, but only counts for one win. It's not
a divisional win, and they lost Eric berry Um. But
if you look at how successful the Chiefs have been
(01:22:10):
in the regular season over the last three years, I
think it's really hard to pick against the Chiefs making
the playoffs as opposed to the hardest things for the Charges.
You're gonna be finding ways to win games that they
should lose, because last year they lost games that they
should regularly. All right. Up coming next Eric Mangini will
join the show. The former head coach of both the
(01:22:30):
New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns joins us Uh.
Going to ask him about a couple of weird lines.
The Carolina Panthers only three point favorites. I guess Cam
Newton is gonna play It seems like a weird line.
People are down in the Atlanta Falcons. I know they're
favored at Chicago. A lot of people thinking that they'll
level off without Kyle Shanahan. And what about the Skins
(01:22:54):
and Eagles? Why are the Redskins not favored at home
against an Eagle team that struggled last year? Cousins had
a much better year than Wentz once in year two,
I know they added some weapons for once. Eric Mangina joins.
Plus should we panick in New England? That's next on
The Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up Doug
(01:23:14):
Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you live and
direct from the City of Angels, first foot full football
week of the season. I continue to ask the question
that why didn't the Basketball Hall of Fame had their
induction ceremony like two weeks ago when we would have
cared Now we don't. They already have like eight or
(01:23:36):
nine nominees we don't care about. Then put it on
a weekend in which all we care about is football,
and then secondarily maybe baseball. I don't know, I don't
know what they're doing over there. Just just don't get it.
Maybe they don't get but last night was really really
interesting that there's the the thought in the NFL is
(01:23:58):
you don't really know what you have have until October one,
four games into the season, right, But there seemed to
be some alarm bells that have to go off when
the Patriots lose at home? And what just they lost
at home? They lost at home when they had to
lead the half that it only happened three times previously
with Tom Brady's quarterback. They had never lost at home
(01:24:22):
with a lead hanging to the fourth quarter a hundred
and five in a row. Crazy, but they did, and
Brady wasn't great, and they couldn't pressure Alex Smith at home?
So how much did the alarm bells go off? Or
is it just the first week of the season? Will
ask Eric Manginie will join us in a moment Fox
(01:24:43):
Sports NFL analysts. With true Car, you can find out
what other people in your area paid for the same
car you're looking for new or use visit true car
to enjoy more confident car buying experience. He's a former
Patriots assistant, former Niners assistant, former head coach of the
Browns and the Jets, And of course he's a colleague here.
He's been my colleague in another place as well. He's
the man genius Eric Mangini joining us UM. All right,
(01:25:06):
so if you're a Patriot fan, are you right to
freak out about Tom Brady looking like his age? No?
I don't think this is a function of freaking out
about Tom Brady. There are there are a lot of
other issues that need to be addressed. And then Tom
didn't play safety. Tom didn't play linebacker, time didn't play
(01:25:28):
anything at defensively. And there are points where he looked
really good. He missed, he missed a few throws, but
he made some pretty incredible throws too. And that game
could be very easily been fourteen to nothing early early on,
and Roc made non characteristic dropped. It doesn't easily happen,
(01:25:49):
I said. The main thing about this game is the
first game this season is the hardest one to prepare for.
There's so many unknowns. You don't really know how the
new players are going to play for you. You don't
really know how the new schemes that you have are
gonna work. You're not sure what you're gonna get from
your opponent. There's unscouted guys. You look. You look at
(01:26:10):
Hunt for example, who who knew? Now as the season
goes on. New England does a great job of self
assessing and then also assessing opponents. When they have more information,
they continue to improve. Um, yeah, I don't think it's
sound to panic. Other things to be concerned about. Yeah,
well they get addressed in New England aggressively. Yes, how
(01:26:31):
do you how do you change the makeup of this
team considering it doesn't feel like they have a pass rush.
It didn't feel that way in the preseason and that
was only reaffirmed by their inability to generate a pass
rush last night. Well, you know, they tried to address
it some different ways last night, and then that's part
of the experiment experiments that are experimenting process that goes on.
(01:26:55):
They hit the play, they hit the Tyreek Hill, they
were bringing someone off the od it was it wasn't
a true zone blitz because they end up playing cover too.
They were just extained in Russia's You do things like
that where you you add pressures, uh, you mix up pressures,
you give different looks. It's not perfect. You want to
be able to get there before. But part of that
(01:27:17):
is understanding those guys that you have and what they
do best. And then once you have a better feel
for that. You know, things tend to kind of fall
in line. Eric Mangini, joining us on The Doug Gottlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, so do
we all miss judge Alex Smith right like he has
earned this reputation as captain checked down? Do we all
(01:27:38):
miss judge him? And he's really a baller? I think
I think that Alex is. I like Alex, and I've
gotten to know Alex over time. I really respect his
work ethic and I respect the way that he's grown
from early on in San Francisco to where he is now.
And he's smart. And the great thing about Alex is
(01:28:02):
four games are lost in the NFL than one. He
doesn't lose games, and he sawed last night. He can
make big plays. He can he can go through reprogressions
and get the ball to the right spot. I think
people want to knock him for him doing the right thing,
for him making a lot of good decisions. I don't
think that's fair. I think he's got the potential bit
(01:28:22):
to any ranger throws. Eric Mangini joining us on The
Doug Gottlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, people
are down a little bit on the Falcon. Some of
it is, you know, you lose in the Super Bowl
and you can have that hangover. We saw it with
the Carolina Panthers last year. Some of it is that
you know it works when you win, People raid your staff.
(01:28:44):
Happen with you guys in New England, has happened other
places as well. He lost not on his offensive coordinator,
lost his quarterback coach as well. How much do you
think that changes this team heading into the season. I
think that it's it's hard. Not only did he lose
his offensical odinator, they change defensive coordinators also, so there's
(01:29:04):
a new offensive coordinator, there's a new defensive coordinator. And
the year after winning the Super Bowl or playing in
the Super Bowl, it's tough because everything changes. Expectations change,
the way that people play change. You've become measuring stick
whether you've won or lost. Guys on the team, everybody
wants to increase their their percentage of the things that
(01:29:28):
go with success. So there's some ego things that you
have to work through. It's it's a tough thing to manage.
And I know the first time after we won the
Super Bowl, we we faced all those problems and we
went nine and seven the next year, and and losing
the Super Bowl. Winning the Super Bowl. Really, there's there's
a core set of problems that that come with that,
(01:29:50):
and now transitioning both coordinators, it's it's gonna be really hard.
I pointed out to anybody who will listen that one,
I think the Bengals have um better talent than maybe
half the league. Like, I don't think they have the
best talent, but they had pretty talented team skill position wise,
defensive front wise. I'm interested in their offensive line and
(01:30:10):
how they play with that perfect going against the Ravens
team that doesn't hasn't seen Flacco in live action so
far this year, But it feels to me like we're
overlooking the Bengals because they were such a disappointment last year.
Am I wrong with Cincinnati? They're They're a little bit
tough to figure out, and yeah, things were disappointing last year.
(01:30:32):
The thing that that I always find going into any
new season is everybody wants to point back to the
previous year and look, you've hear heard Bill belt Sex
say a thousand times each season is really it's its
own empathy, and they do have a lot of talent
and They've done a good job with that talent. There's
been some disappointment, but it's a team I think is
(01:30:55):
easy to underestimate um and if you do, we could
could be a problem for you. The Texans were able
to look how they do last year and they had
dysfunction at their quarterback position. Now they're still not great
at quarterback, but you get J. J. Watt back to
a team that at least statistically had had a lot
of success last year. What are your thoughts on Bill
(01:31:17):
O'Brien's crew heading in the season. I'm I'm partial to
the Texans. You know World Carnell defensive coordinator for a
long time and he's still there. Mike Rabel takes over.
There's a lot of a lot of smart guys on
that coaching staff. They do a good job with scheme,
the sound. They're disciplined, they're tough, they're talented. The coaching
(01:31:42):
staff in general, on the team in general, does a
does a good job at all three phases. That the
quarterback problem, it's something that's difficult to overcome, but they've
done pretty well in terms of building special teams, the
core defense, building around the quarterback, and if they can
get that problem improved from where it was last year.
(01:32:04):
They can make a jump as well. Let's talk about
some of the big games Seahawks Packers. Eric van jani
Our guest on the Doug Gottlieb Show. This feels like
a playoff preview, feels like potentially an NFC Championship game preview.
The first thing is Seahawks have tried to fix that
offensive line issue. Defense is still really good, but Russell
Wilson had a terrible offensive line issue early in last season.
(01:32:25):
Have they done enough well, He's He's a great thing
about Russell Wilson is even if you haven't done enough,
when Russell Wilson is healthy, he can make all those
problems look a lot smaller. He's nowhere near the traditional guy.
And a lot of the plays that he makes our
(01:32:46):
plays where he extends extends the play so it doesn't
have to be him dropping back in a five step
or seven step drop oftentimes. That's that's not what her steams.
It's the things that he can do when the plays breakdown. Now,
is it is it perfect? You are You're offensive line
to be better than where they've been. Yeah, But he
(01:33:07):
he's unique in the sense that he can make those
problems a lot less significant, and he looks like he's
in a much better position than he was last year.
The packers finally went outside the organization added some pieces.
Do you like what they added? Yeah? You know, they
spent the early part of the draft on defense. They
just picked up a mod Brooks and Quentin Dial, two
(01:33:28):
guys that I had in San Francisco that are both tough,
physical guys. That that adds some attitude to the defense.
Uh is it enough? No? But I think that they've
addressed a lot of the problems that they could address,
or at least have tried to. Now it's going to
be a function of how did those how those pieces
(01:33:48):
fit together, and how quickly did they fit together where
they struggled early last year. Hopefully they want to have
that issue. All right, let's go to the Cowboys. Um, Look,
Dak struggles when he had people in his face. Philadelphia
got to him, Giants got to him twice. But now
he's he's seen things. I kind of pointed out and like, look,
you've lived it more than I have, the more obviously
(01:34:10):
fifteen times more than I have. But that second year,
you give more of the playbook, You give more responsibility.
Sometimes you actually that's why you get a sophomore slump
because you expect him to be so much better and
the reality is he still only started what seventeen games,
uh in a season. What are your thoughts on on
dec and what he's facing this year? Well, I I'm
(01:34:32):
a little bit like you. You always look at that
second year and say, Okay, was the first year really
who this player is? Or is it just because he's
so new he's having more of an impact than than
he should. People that I've talked to in Dallas friends
of mine, talk about his work, ethics, his leadership, all
(01:34:53):
the positive things he has in terms of his character,
and that to me is really encouraging. Watching him in
the pre season, he looks like he has tremendous control
over the offense. I think he's got a chance to
avoid that. And the sophomore slump does come into play too,
where defensive coordinators have more film, a new people have
(01:35:15):
tried more things on you. You start to build a
book on a player, and it's whether or not that
player can identify weaknesses that he has in his game
and correct him, or whether or not that's just going
to be an issue all the time for him. Now
with who it sounds like he is. H He's gonna
address those saying and I think make it more difficult
(01:35:37):
to to cut him down. Hee. We gotta get your
studio and hang out for a day. In the meantime,
appreciate you join us. Look forward to having you again
on a weekly basis, and uh enjoy the first full
weekend of covering the NFL. Alright, awesome to talk to
you ducks. Alright, pleasures mind Eric Mangini joining us on

going to join us upcoming next. I'll ask him at

week one in the Books of three Big Time Pack
twelve Quarterbacks, Louke falk Up at wazoo, Uh, Sam Donald
and Josh Rosen in l A plus you got Stanford
USC at the Coliseum Battle for supremacy on that side
of the Pack twelve preview that upcoming next. But first,
you have been waiting since since February six, and I'm
(01:36:21):
sure you like me. You're watching last night and you
have your own fantasy team and you start to see
guys go down with injury. You're like, man, this whole
locking into a season long and go into the waiver wire.
That sucks. How can I fix it? Well? The best
way to fulfill that need for fantasy football and to
not have you know, if you have a fear of
commitment with players because of injury, you don't need to commit.
(01:36:44):
You just need to commit to Draft Kings and they're

Roxy Bernstein, which means, uh, uh, he doesn't He doesn't
(01:37:52):
have to prepare at all because Rocks is so prep man.
It's a it's uh, it's amazing, it's amazing. Um. Anyway,
Pack twelve network. They've got some games this weekend. Um
Senior State, Arizona State, cal, Weber State. Weber is not
a state. Uh, there's some other ones, but the big
(01:38:13):
one this weekend is USC USC taken on Stanford USC Stanford.
Have you guys decided what game you would go to
your music, you said you would most like to go
to because you've never been to a college football game.
You most like to go to a high state Columbus. Well,
it's not that I've never been to a college and
you never know a college football game. If that's if
that's how you wanted to find it, Like when you
(01:38:33):
said the best atmosphere you've been doing, like Arizona football game.
I was like, m hmm, come on, dude, Like, I'm
just you haven't unless you've been to a Big ten game,
an SEC game, even as a Big twelve. A M like,
it's starting to get to the level of the lower
end of But then nothing compares to big time, a SEC,
(01:38:54):
big time, Big twelve. Uh you know, USC has a
little bit of it. Yeah, you has a little bit
of it at Washington and people take the boats up.
But it's just so much more relaxed on the East
coast with so much more aggressive see me, it's much
more aggressive on the East coast. Were relaxed on the
West coast. I do think you gotta go on the
other side of the Rockies. Now, that's not to the
(01:39:18):
fame the talent in the PAC twelve three probable first
round draft picks at quarterback Luke Falkup at Wazoo and
Donald and Rosen in l A. Anthony Herron joins us
from the PAC twelve network. Um, you've you've you've seen
the Donald tape from last week, haven't you? I have?
And I actually called the game last week, Ducks. I
got to see it. I've called in personal and I
(01:39:39):
got to review it afterwards as well. Okay, so, um,
there's like this, these these uh narratives which people who
have actually watched the game and watched the tape of like, no,
he was actually really good, and everybody was like, and
they didn't blow out Western Michigan. He must not have
been that good. Look at some of the incompletions. What's
the truth? Know what it's like because you call a
(01:40:01):
lot of games too, and so when you have kind
of multiple roles in the industry. For me, when I'm
calling the football game, I know what my eyes are
telling me. But then also just with the amount of
radio I do throughout the week, I can kind of
anticipate what the storyline is gonna be afterwards too, So
to some extent, especially you know, football broadcast will take
three and a half four hours at the college level,
(01:40:22):
so there are certain points where I'll try to, you know,
sort of hit that head on. And I did that
a bit the other day during our Pactwell Network broadcast.
And knowing that Sam Donald having zero touchdown passes after
repeatedly throwing multiple touchdowns over and over again throughout the
year last season, and all the highlight he saw him make,
and he was so precise during that game last week,
(01:40:43):
as precise as I've seen Sam Donald show the football,
with the accuracy from within the pocket, the anticipatory nature
that he threw the football with. I mean, sant Burnette.
We ended up being his leading receiver last week and
will likely do that for USC throughout this season. There
were times where Burnett would be on an out route,
he hadn't even finished the vertical segment of the route.
(01:41:03):
Sam Donald's throwing the football not just to his back shoulder,
but throwing it to his back shoulder at a point
where no one, not even deont Burnett realized the ball
being thrown. Yet same thing on in cut. There's things
that are beyond the years of being a sophomore quarterback
in college. The second year starter that Sam Donald was
doing during that game the other day to a level
that we didn't see him doing last year. What happened
(01:41:25):
when they faced Western Michigan was a lot of the
other skill position players let him down. Ronald Jones the
tail back down and out saying the game. Deonte Burnett
looked fantastic STI a lot of other younger players receivers,
tight ends, running back, dropping footballs, growing protections and so
even though he completed nearly seventy of his passes, it
really could have been about if he had other guys
(01:41:47):
around him actually making play for Sam Donald had a
fantastic game. Anyone who's saying he didn't didn't actually watch
him play. And they harron joining us in the doug
Otlip Show. All right, they got Stanford at home. Stanford,
we haven't seen. They had last week off, the week
before they were down in Australia. Kelly Chris is back.
He towards knee in the bowl game and all of
a sudden he's back and healthy. He was okay. Uh,
(01:42:08):
their new running back, his Bryce Love. He had a
hundred eighty yards. But there's a lot of people who
are like, look that's against Rice. Against sc they won't
be able to line up and mash the way that
Stanford likes to line up and mash. You battle of styles.
Can Stanford style of shortening the game and controlling tempo.
Can that work against these Trojans? I believe it can.
(01:42:30):
And I wasn't surprised what I saw from Black's Love
and I frank, we don't think we learned a lot
about Stanford yet from what they did against Ryce over
in Australia. It's right, and they didn't. They weren't able to.
They just weren't physically capable of forcing Stanford to do
anything outside of Stanford's more mundane side of their personality.
Because one of the things that folks don't realize about
(01:42:51):
David Shaw and that Cardinal offense is that the volume
of offense they have available to them is as expansive
as anyone in the country. But when they can just
line up and bledgend you, that's what they prefer to do,
and they do that better than anyone else in the country.
And it's fun for me as an overfittive lineman to
see what that offensive line does on the line of scrimmage.
(01:43:12):
But this week it's going to essentially be a bit
of a strength on weakness matchup because USC's front seven
on defense looks very vulnerable and I spent some time
during our broadcast pointing out where some of the interior
defensive linemen and some of their young and less experienced
linebackers suffered at the hands of the Western Michigan Broncos
during the first half of that game. That's something I'll
(01:43:33):
be surprised at Stanford have been able to take advantage
of that, just because they're so experienced with their blocking team,
with their run game, and Bryce Loved has been groomed
for this moment for a couple of years behind Christ
and mccaffers, and Stanford will run the football effectively. I
think the game will end up being a bit of
a shootout, more so than folks to anticipate, because I
do think Stanford. The one thing I maybe did learn
(01:43:55):
against right, they don't seem to have a dominant pass rusher.
You know, they're not always going to have a thought
the time was available to them. But even aside from that,
they didn't really have anyone within the defensive front of
their front seven who could consistently in a one on
one scenario pressure the quarterback. So that's gonna give Samdonald
additional time to deliver the ball. I anticipate USC skill
(01:44:16):
position players to catch the football more cleanly this week,
So it's gonna be difficult to me for Stanford's passed
deep than to slow down USC half offense, and then
vice versa. USC's run d is gonna have to grow
leaps and bounds for week one. If they're gonna slow
up Stanfords run games. Anthony Herron john Anston Pack twelve Network,
he called that SC win uh last week over Western Michigan.
(01:44:37):
SC takes on Stanford at the Coliseum this Saturday. Okay
um u C l A comes from behind beachs Texas
A and M. Everybody goes crazy about Rosen in the
fourth quarter, and he was amazing in the fourth quarter.
But there was the delay a game, there's the fall start,
There's a couple of throws to which frankly could have
gone the other way. They didn't, and they won, and
(01:44:59):
it was incredible. Bull as a guy who does this
and breaks it down for a living, Give me your
sense of Rosen. What impressed me most about the fourth
quarter from Josh Rosen was that he sort of reverted
to a different type of personality as a playmaker. It
was it was an odd thing to juxtapose the two
l A quarterbacks. Sam Donald with his calculated precision, had
(01:45:23):
a little bit more Josh Rosen to him in his
atroverses Western Michigan and that fourth quarter first Texas A
and M. Josh Rosen had a lot of Sam Donald
in him where he just threw caution to the wind.
He was throwing into coverage, he was leaving the pocket
on occasion, and of course he's not as mobile, he's
not gonna be as dynamic with the way he can
hurt defenses with his legs to Sam Donald, but he
(01:45:44):
did enough to buy himself kind and made a bunch
of off platform throws in the coverage and just had
to trust his teammates to come up and make plays
for him. So after he was down thirty four points
and there was essentially nothing left to lose, he did
end up throwing causing to the wind. And don't think
he can maybe be quite as careless with the ball
moving forward for U t l A's office to have
(01:46:05):
consistent success, but to have more of that care free
element to his game and not be so analytical during
the snap down in and down out. That to me
is the version of Josh Rosan that I think could
really do special things to U c l A's offense.
Anthon Aaron joined us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. What
about Luke falk P. I mean you're like, look, we
(01:46:26):
only have so much. It's like, um, it's like when
you have TiVo or DVR, right, Like, there's so many
only so many things you can record, and so in
our mind we're like, all right, there's Josh Allen at Wyoming,
got that one. Uh, there's a couple of the quarterbacks nationally.
Like it's almost like, I think, nationally, no one discusses
Luke Falk. Uh where is he? How big is the
(01:46:47):
drop off in your mind between Donald Rosen and Washington
States quarterback? Well, Luke Falk for the Cougar is as
good at college quarterback as the half where this discussion
ends up going off the rails a bit is where
we start to judge college quarterbacks by how we anticipate
them being at the next level. I'm not at the point,
you know, I evaluate the NFL draft every year. I'm
(01:47:09):
not at the point where I'm ready to say Luke
Falk will or should be a high NFL draft pig
as a quarterback. But I don't care about that with
the way I evaluate him as a college quarterback. You know,
it was one thing when I watched kelling Moore at
Boys he States. Never thought kelling More was gonna be
a hot draft pick in the NFL. But he's one
of the greatest college football players, not even just quarterback,
one of the greatest college football players I ever saw.
(01:47:32):
I feel a similar way about Luke Falk. Now he's
not killing Moore, but he's just a nace below that.
He's one of the great quarterbacks in the country right now,
not just because of the air raid offense and the
yards he puts up with the system that Mike Leach
ruz he was one of the guide fathers of this
air raid. There's so many folks on nowadays. But one
of the things he's done with Luke Fawk that he
(01:47:53):
very rarely has done in the past, Luke Falk has
been a multi year starter foreman. Mike Leach has instrusted
Luke Fall to call play with the line of scream
and to me manipulate what the defense of front seven
is indicating to him. And quite often Luke Fall isn't
check into a different paths play, he's checking run and
he's got that ground attack going for Washington State in
(01:48:14):
a way that to me, beyond Stanford, I actually picked
Washington to date as the number two team in the
Pack twelve North right now because of the growth of
the run game led by what Luke Fawk is doing
free snap in that box, count and finding the bubble
in the defense and saying, you know what, it doesn't
just have to be on my right arm. I can
look for my mentality, put my team in the best
(01:48:35):
position I actually have a successful play, snap in and
snap out. I think he's one of the best in
the business right now. Anthony here and great stuff. You
can see him on the Pack Towel Network. They got
four games this upcoming Saturday, got a pregame show plus
the pack to a final score show. You can hear
him with Roxy Bernstein. Uh, it's cal you and Caliber State. No. Actually,
this weekend we have San Diego State Birds are going
(01:48:56):
to say we're gonna have this full on pack to
after dark acting going. The game doesn't kick off until
eight o'clock Local eleven o'clock GAS, So go ahead and
take a nap after some of those early games. You
gotta sleep a few things off and make sure you're
tune in because Rocky Long in San Diego State are
coming in here meeting business to tempy. I'm out here
guzzling all the water I can because he didn't know
what it's like out here in the devit tug. I'm
(01:49:17):
gonna be ready when we kicked this thing out tomorrow night.
You need a hoop with Kurt Warner on Sunday, Moore,
I know I'll be working Sunday morning. He's got got
the pickup game at his house now, far Lewis Johnson,
tell me tell my boy Lewis Johnson. I said, hello too.
I know he works the sideline for you guys on
on Saturday night. Of course. Uh Rocks is the best. Hey, Anthony,
thanks so much for joining us. Love your working, appreciate
you being a part of Fox Sports Radio. Doug, let's
(01:49:39):
do it again, all right, it's that time of year.
I'll give you my first picks of the first full
weekend in college and the NFL. Uh. Let's first, they'll
find out what's going on in the world of sports
with Doug. We should find out, according to w f
a A in Dallas, we should find out by the
(01:49:59):
top of the or on whether the temporary restraining order
will exist for Ezekiel Elliott's as he issuing the National
Football League, and if that temporary restraining order is upheld,
then Ezekiel Elliott likely could be playing for the Dallas
Cowboys a lot longer than just week one of the
NFL season, but we should know something, possibly by the
top of the hour, according to w f a A
(01:50:20):
in Dallas. Now looking ahead to week once some injury
news to pass a log. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Questionable to play in that game against the Cowboys on
Sunday night because of an ankle injury. ESPN says he's
a game time decision, Seahawks said. Coach Pete Carroll said
today that running back Thomas Rawls is a game time
decision with an ankle injury for their matchup against Green
Bay on Sunday. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton expected to start
(01:50:42):
despite a shoulder injury he has listed as questionable as
Carolina takes on San Francisco this Sunday. Chief safety Eric
Barry is gonna miss the rest of the year. He
ruptured his achilles tendon and last night's win in New England.
And the Miami Dolphins aren't playing this weekend, but they
are going to spend the next week or so in
southern California. They're escaping her Kane Irma. The Dolphins gonna
practice in Southern California, as in Week two, they will
(01:51:04):
face the Chargers in Los Angeles. Quick update from the
U S Open Men's semifinal. Pablo Karina busta up one,
set to love on Kevin Anderson in their semifinal match,
and finally dug the series between the Yankees and Raising St.
Pete on Monday through Wednesday. Not gonna be moved to
the Mets home of City Field in New York. The
Rays will remain the home team obviously move because of
(01:51:24):
Hurricane Irma. I appreciate that. That's Dan Bayer joining US
Buyer Buyer Buyer, Dan Byer. Do we have any music
for my picks? Do you have any open for my picks?
How's that possible? I got I guess, But that's for
and that's the NFL music. Can I only make NFL picks?
(01:51:45):
Does Fox Sports tellar? Is that all Fox Sports music?
It's mainly just NFL? Let's you only make my NFL picks? First? Well,
I mean we could change the music in between. I
didn't know what we were supposed to come up with
an original score just for your picks here. I don't know.
It's like work in progress. I may usually people have
a pick segment, they have they have music, or they
(01:52:06):
have some sort of line. I mean, plus I I
just I entrust ramost of these things. All right, let
me give you my NFL picks. Okay, Um, I like
Pittsburgh on the road, even those nine points, right, Calvin
Pryor gone, Joe Hayden gone. Uh, you don't have your
number one overall pick in the NFL draft supposed to
(01:52:28):
put pressure the Pittsburgh Steals. I know Leban hasn't practiced
a ton, but I don't think there's a ton of
practice needed for here. Levy on catch this, now take
it to the house. You got Antonio Brown, you got
Martavis Bryant, you got a healthy version of Ben Roethlisberger.
I don't like blowouts in the National Football League. I
do like a blowout considering whether it won't be a
factor and defense won't be a factor, and you're starting
(01:52:50):
a rookie starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. I like
Pittsburgh even though they're uh laying nine points in the game.
Have you noticed this Atlanta Chicago line has moved from
a seven and a half point line to a six
point line, where Atlanta is only a six point favorite
on the road against the Chicago Bears. Uh people are
(01:53:13):
down in Atlanta with you know the change as Sarkas.
Now they're off their their play caller. I'm gonna go
the other way of all of that movement. Now that
it's six, that means a touchdown wins it again. A
road favorite I'm gonna take in Week one. One reason
Chicago is usually difficult to play because weather is usually
(01:53:34):
a factor, whether or not a factor. Pittsburgh. Now, I'll
take Atlanta only laying six points. I'll take Atlanta on
the road. Philadelphia has taken on Washington, and Washington has
been a curious underdog all week. I like the Skins.
It's a one point line essentially becomes a pick um.
The Redskins win at home, the Redskins win your bet.
(01:53:56):
So I'll take uh this and a home dog in
the Washington red Skins to win, which makes allows them
to cover. Let's get to a couple of the bigger games.
I've been touting this Baltimore Cincinnati game. I know Vontes
Perfect is out, but Tyler Eifford is back, and I
think he's a huge factor for them in the red zone.
(01:54:17):
You add you had Joe Mixon as a talented running
back to an already full backfield. I like Cincinnati is
a home favorite three points, and I like uh. I
like the Seattle Seahawks as a road dog getting three points.
So there's my NFL picks for you. We don't have
any change in music, so I do I just keep going.
(01:54:41):
There's somebody mixing that up. That's pretty good. Somebody's like
scratching record thing. It's pretty good. Only the best for you, Doug.
I like that who's doing the bass guitar and that
the bass guitars? That's Sean Ramos is that is that
Ramos with the with the bass guitar. Little nightlife work here. Uh.
Texas is a twenty five point favorite at home against
(01:55:04):
San Jose State. Uh. This is San Jose State team
that lost to South Florida forty two two. And I
know South Florida is better in terms of ranking at
the time than Texas. Their win was over cal Poly.
I like Texas. I think this is one of those
Tom tom Herman had some play calling mistakes, they had
(01:55:25):
some special teams mistakes, and they lost to Maryland. This
is a bounce back blowout. The team make everybody happy game.
I'm gonna take Texas laying at home. M m m
m Uh. I'm going with a got a feeling game. Um,
(01:55:47):
got a feeling that, uh that Arkansas is going to
beat TCU. Right. Uh. Look, here's the quote from Brett Bielma.
It's everything you'll expect. They're very smart, very well coached. Um. Look,
I've heard people say, did I say Arkansas? I meant
(01:56:09):
to TCU is going to beat Arkansas. TCU sneaky favorite
to win the Big Twelve Big Twelve at a disappointing
first weekend. I'm gonna take the Big twelve to bounce
back this weekend. Give me TCU even though their land
three points, playing on the road at Arkansas. Also, we'll
take Oklahoma, another Big twelve team, not because I think
they'll win, but because I think it will be competitive.
(01:56:30):
They are an eight and a half point dog. I
will tell assume me a seven half point dog touchdown
and the hook, the hook steals it for me. Give
me Oklahoma on the road to cover like Notre Dame
at home, going against a true freshman starting quarterback at
Georgia as uh As Easton got hurt for the Dogs.
I know they've got a five star quarterback starting, but
(01:56:51):
freshman quarterback on the road. Irish have an outstanding offensive line.
I like Notre Dame to win, Notre Dame to cover.
Same for SC win ever for USC UH on the
other hand, On the other hand, I like Minnesota on
the road against Oregon State. Oregon State has struggled mightily
out of the gate. Took him a while to put
(01:57:11):
away Portland's state dominated by Colorado State. And I think
p J. Flex is gonna come in here. Remember they
won nine games last year. He did not take over
an absolute terrible roster. UH. Connor Road is not bad
at quarterback, Rodney Smith at running back. They got a
stud wide receiver in Tyler Johnson. I'm gonna take Minnesota
to get the road win. That game is on f
(01:57:33):
S once. Those are my picks for college football. A
former m v P possibly missing some time in the
regular season. I'll have details next. What True Car. You
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, new or used.
Visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
I want to go around the room and get everybody's picks.
(01:57:53):
On all the games. This first thing that comes to
your mind when I throw out a game to you
Before we do that, though, Look it's a Friday. Uh.
If you're listening to us in Florida driving fum Florida,
just keep heading north and then once you get to
somewhere you can head west. Also a good idea. Keep
it tuned here if you haven't heard, we've got an
incredible weekend lineup on Fox Sports Trader you here, Rob Ryan,
(01:58:16):
who will debut music you're helping out with that show
to start? What times that show? Uh? That will be
on starting at one pm Eastern Time on Sunday alongside
Mark Willard. Okay, so all the games are going on,
Rob and Mark Willoughby watching the games and Robi giving
you his his thoughts. Rob's a great, great dude. He
was the defense coordinator Oklahoma State when I was a
student there. He's he still wears I believe his uh
(01:58:39):
converse Chuck Taylor's everywhere he goes. Of course, the flowing main,
the robes, Grace Striking. Let's get to the press. The
press can buyer. What do you have for me? Well,
we've got some injury updates from across the NFL. John's
wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Considered a game time the
(01:59:00):
decision by ESPN for their game against the Cowboys on
Sunday night. Giants efficiently listed to him as questionable because
of an ankle injury. M hmmm, uh, look, I think
he's gonna play in the game. That game, right, game
of that magnitude. No question in my mind that he plays. Uh,
it's just it's too big. But imagine if he doesn't
play and Ezekie Elliott does play, right, those are things
(01:59:22):
we did not think. What that would happen a week
ago is the opposite of what we thought would happen.
The NFL hoping for their stars to to be present
and against still waiting on the Ezekiel Elliott news. One
star likely to be president for the Carolina Panthers. That's
quarterback Cam Newton. There had been some issues following shoulder surgery,
but everything should be good to go for Cam, but
still listed as questionable to face the forty Niners on Sunday.
(01:59:44):
Just interested the sea Doug how much Cam Newton actually
runs in this game because it was such a theme
this offseason. Yeah, I mean, like, look, does he have
to run in this game, though, I mean it's I
know they have such a young, such a new team.
The Niners are gonna be interesting. People are more up
on the Niners than I am. They are also more
up on the Arizona Cardinals than I am. But um,
(02:00:05):
I hadn't played in the preseason. Let's let's see what
he's got. Let's see how his arm is. He's got
a ton of weaponry. How do you use? Christian McCaffrey,
his first official NFL game, will be in the same stadium,
were in the same area where he played his college career.
The Miami Dolphins are flying in California, spending the week
in LA escaping Hurricane Irma. They'll be here all week
(02:00:25):
dog because they faced the Chargers in Los Angeles and
week two, but without a game this week, Miami Dolphins
gonna take cover in l A in southern California, getting
ready for their matchup in a week two instead. Yeah,
I'm Ali, Look I think are there will there be
some questions about home, like, yeah, I will be honest
(02:00:47):
with you, I don't Most of those Dolphins, I would guess,
live in beautiful high rises. That should be fine, right.
The differences like in Houston, you have this massive flooding
likes of which people hadn't seen, and the city is
with a couptual, a couple of receptions essentially destroyed. And
so if you have any in Houston, if you have
a house, and a lot of people live out like
(02:01:08):
in sugar Land where I have friends will live outside
of Houston, Like you just don't know what you're going
home to. There's that stress of it. This feels like
we known the storm was gonna hit Florida over the
last couple of days, had a good chance of hitting Florida.
Now it's become a reality. There's a little bit more
time to prepare. They'll be gone, they'll be in l A.
(02:01:28):
You know, Yeah, you don't want your apartment, your house
getting messed up, But it seems like there's a much
greater chance of unless you're unless you're in low income
housing as they have a lot of that in Miami
or you know, in Florida. In general, I think you'll
be okay, And I don't think it'll affect a lot
of these NFL players as much. Just getting word in
(02:01:49):
that the experts feel that when it hits Florida, Hurricane IRMA.
It could be a category it will be a Category five.
So stay safe. It is huge. It is a massive,
massive storm. They have done a really good job of
covering it like this is not a surprise, whereas it's not.
They did a bad job of covering Harvey. I just
don't think anybody understood what happens when a storm like
(02:02:09):
that gets stuck. Interesting situation at a scary situation in
New Orleans. Saints long snapper John dorin Boss remember him,
He was on America's Got Talent? Yeah, he was recently
acquired in a trade with Philadelphia. Saints brought him in
for a conditional seventh rounderbile. During his physical, it was
determined that he had a heart condition and now is
(02:02:30):
undergoing open heart surgery. Placed on the non football injury list.
Sean Payton said that the physical that dorin Boss had
with the team revealed the condition. Yeah, saved his life. Wow, Wow,
that's crazy. So move on from their Yankees and Raised.
Since we were talking Hurricane, that series has been moved
from St. Pete to City Field in New York. So
the Yankees and Raised will be playing Monday through Wednesday.
(02:02:52):
And now the question is because the Yankees are essentially
playing in their hometown. Will there be more fans for
that game than there would have been in St. Pete's
with the Yankees and Race originally playing at the trop
no question, and then play at City Field, Right, Yes,
that's kind of cool. Right, it's gonna be weird, but
still really really cool for them. Um that w W
(02:03:12):
playing there and it could really help this Yankees team
that needs kind of a final kick push in the playoffs.
That will won't be a homestand but after that they
have a seven game homestand in a final one. Universal
Windows Direct offered a deal in Cleveland to customers in
the month of July if the Indians were to break
their fourteen game win streak from a year ago after August, first,
they'd pay for what anybody bought in the month of July.
(02:03:33):
Indians have now one fifteen straight, one point seven million
dollars worth of products gonna have to be covered. Business
had an insurance policy in fact that a watch party.
Last night is the Tribe one straight. They just win.
They won eleven to two over the White Sox, sweeping
a four game series from the White Sox. After sweeping
a four game series from the Tigers, all of those
games on the road, get out there and pressed. That
(02:03:54):
was the press, all right, Dan Buyer, give me one
upset you see in college football this weekend. The one
upset that I see in college football is, uh, Georgia
going on the road in winning. You think Georgia with
a freshman, true freshman starting quarterback wins on the road
at Notre Dame the world. That is a That is
a bold pick. Ramos, give me one pick that will
(02:04:14):
surprise me from this weekend. Aarburn Auburn. Auburn over Clemson.
Auburn over Clemson, all right, because you've got Jay Stidham
who came from Baylor. Now Auburn has a quarterback. If
they beat Georgia, southern music. You've never been to a
real college football game. Give me one pick that will
surprise me. I've never watched college football, now I'm kidding.
Let's go with the Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma taking down
Ohio State. You got him winning the game out right,
(02:04:39):
out right, all right, enjoy the college football, enjoy the
pro football. Oklahoma State will dominate South Alabama tonight points
not enough. South Alabama lost as injuries their defensive backfield,
have a great weekend. This is doug Otlip Show.
