Speaker 1 (00:19):
All right, you know what today is. It's Friday, Friday, Friday,
Friday Friday. Yeah, there we go for that. Here's the deal.
I don't think everybody got into it because it's such
a weird Friday. We had Christmas Eve, Christmas Day. I
see people back to work. We're back to work, guys.
(00:41):
On first things first, are back to work. My wife
had to work today, Your wife back to work? Why
not just make it three days three days off?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Right?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
You know, I thought this one might be a topic
for today. The worst boss in the world is the
one that makes you come back, like for Black Friday,
or like the day that is very clearly should just
be the five day weekend and makes you come back anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
If you're back at work or driving home from work
right now, thank you. We're hanging out with Isaac loohin Crown,
who's at the news desk. Jason Stewart is here. Hello Jason,
Hello with it Buddy, Iowa Sam as well. No have
you heard about trainer games? Add this year Binge list
(01:23):
ten athletes go head to head for the chance to
win an iFIT trainer contract, where two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars trainer games on Prime Video. January eighth, watched
the trailer on trailergames dot com. He is erin Torres.
I'm Dan Byer. We are all in for Covino and
Rich Aaron was in yesterday, as was Iowa Sam. And
you guys were on during the NFL triple header and
(01:46):
the NBA quintupleheader on Christmas Day with the NBA and
NFL going head to head. Now it was a Thursday.
This wasn't out of the ordinary. Last year was a
blatant effort by the NFL to say say, you don't
think we can play football on a Wednesday, watch we're
going to and they did. This year. They expanded it
(02:07):
to three games. Because of the Thursday schedule, you were
allowed to do so. So the NFL on the streaming
app apps of Netflix and Amazon Prime went up against
the NBA, which was seen on ABC and ESPN throughout
the entire day, so this had been a topic of
conversation not only here at Fox Sports Radio, but also
(02:28):
apparently on ESPN's Charles Barkley had this to say about
the NFL's attempted takeover of Christmas.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
The NFL got greed instarted and Christmas game. We used
to have this day to ourself. But you know, Roger
Goodell and them pigs at the NFL always wanted to
hog every day of the week.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Now they can't play.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
No the NBA, dude. I saw those guys yesterday on
the ESPN talk about it, and they're right. Christmas is
an NBA day.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Christmas is an en you cringe. I see a little
facial from Aaron Torres that may not have been audible.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
No, I listen. I think Christmas over the last couple
of years, I do think it had become an NFL day.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'll be quick.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I remember a couple of years ago, I think it
was twenty twenty two, there was a It was basically
the second year that they were even Christmas fell on
a Saturday, Okay, And I remember the Packers when Aaron
Rodgers was still Super Bowl or a League MVP Aaron
Rodgers were playing the Browns Baker Mayfield, and I remember
being like, oh, everyone on my timeline is talking Packers, Browns,
(03:40):
not anything NBA. So I don't know that it's an
NBA day, but I will say yesterday, I think the
combination of bad games being on Netflix and and I
have been a vocal critic of the NBA, some pretty
good NBA basketball headlined by the best team in the
NBA playing the one team that may have their number,
(04:02):
it did feel like the pendulum swung a little bit.
But I don't know that necessarily it means that it's
a definitive NBA day overall.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
I don't know if the Spurs and Thunder did it.
I don't think it was the Warriors and Mavericks where
Anthony Davis got injured again, or the Lakers no show
against the Houston Rockets. But I do know that the
presence of the streaming services was an issue or would
be an issue, especially when you're going to places that
may not traditionally have those streaming services. And when I'm
(04:35):
talking about honestly, our gramma and grandpa's house, going to
your aunt and uncle's house. So in those words, the
NBA may have won because if you did want to
watch sports, you could put that on TV, but you
may not have the access unless you were in Detroit
or Minnesota of seeing it on your local channel where
you had to have the streaming service. So I think ultimately,
(04:56):
in if I'm being honest, my watching yesterday, if I
broke it down, was eighty five percent NFL. Okay, fifteen
percent NBA. And it's difficult. You're you're in studio, so
I know you had the Netflix game up, you had
the NBA games on TV. I'm curious about around the room.
Jason Sam was at work as well. Did you what
(05:19):
did you consume on Christmas Day?
Speaker 4 (05:21):
I have the duo thing. Okay, so I have my
laptop as a kind of up near my TV for
anything streaming, and then I had the ESPN on the
TV and they were both. They were just both wallpaper
yesterday as I was doing Christmas stuff, namely a jigsaw puzzle,
and we could spend a segment on jigsaw puzzles if
(05:43):
you want. That's very exciting.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
I love them.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
But I will say this, can I can I talk
to what Barkley saying? Yeah, because in twenty sixteen remember
Mark Cuban, This was what it reminded me of said
of this of the NFL, that pigs get fat, get slaughtered.
So it kind of made me think of that. And
I also think it is BS that they took Christmas.
I think it's BS that they monopolized the first round
(06:10):
of the college football Playoff. You think that these schedules
have been out a long time in the NFL is
knowingly stepping on these things. It's like when the Walmart
moves into the neighborhood of all the mom and pop shops.
It's like you are taking dollars away from those people
that have kind of been there. And I fully agree
(06:32):
with the sentiment here by Barklay.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
There's no doubt that the NFL has taken over, but
for the NBA to feel like that they are the victims.
I bring up Major League Baseball. If there was a
time when the NFL would not schedule opposite Game one
of the World Series, and Game one of the World
Series would be on a Sunday night, in the NFL
is like, all right, we're not going to have a
Sunday night football game. It's like thirty years ago or
(06:57):
so ago. Then the NBA or the NFL is like, okay, well,
I think we can maybe win the ratings war. Let's
just schedule a game anyway. And now Major League Baseball
is having their series end on like Fridays or start
on Fridays, trying to do everything they can to avoid
what the NFL schedule is. I understand that the NBA
(07:17):
is frustrated with it, but when you play three games
on a Thursday on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas falls on
a Thursday, I fully expect the NFL to take advantage
of it. And if Netflix wants to pay MUCHO bucks
to them, the NBA would have done the same if
their product was just as good.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, real quick. And I know we want to get
to Isaac for some thoughts, so I agree. So I
actually am more on your side of it's good business.
It makes sense. I thought Jay Stu said something very
interesting though of it was all background wallpaper for Christmas stuff.
And I do think this is maybe the only day
(07:58):
of the year because I think there's something too like
Thanksgiving has had football forever. It's baked into the cake
of everyone's gonna sit in the one room watching the
Lions while Grandma makes the Turkey on Thanksgiving. Then we're
all gonna eat during the Cowboys game, and then we'll
go back for seconds during the late game whatever. I
(08:19):
do feel like Christmas is a little bit different of
maybe the one day of the year where it's just like,
I just think Christmas is such a different holiday. A
lot of people are going to multiple places. Grandma's house
on this side, Grandma's house on the other side. You're
opening gifts, You're maybe making a gift as far as
you know, constructing a toy or whatever.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
I just I'm not saying the NFL shouldn't play, but
it's the one day a year that it feels like
a little bit of overkill where it's just like, okay,
like I know my fantasy league's on the line, I
know this, and I just can't pay attention. There's too
much else going on. As you do you find that
at all or was that not an issue at all
for you yesterday?
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Well, it wasn't issue to me because I the NFL won.
In my household, they I turned on the end of
Thunder and Spurs because I also think that fit nicely.
I think maybe in the transition between maybe it was
between the y and then the Lions vikings hadn't started yet,
(09:21):
so it turned over to see that. But at no
point was I going back and forth because while it
wasn't wallpaper, it was just going to stay on the
NFL game for me. And how I feel that people
view this is it's not that if they didn't have
football on that the NBA would be on. That's the
(09:42):
part where I would go back to Charles and say,
there are households that just wouldn't have the TV on
period unless football was on. So it's not like there's
a plane black and white or this. Many people watched
football instead of basketball. I think that the NFL had
viewers who would only watch the NFL and if it
(10:05):
wasn't on, then for Christmas wouldn't even put the NBA on.
So whether the NFL was there or not wouldn't affect
those people who ended up watching the NBA because those
people weren't gonna watch any of the five games.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Let me let me ask you this though, but do
you think there is a sports fan that just wants
to have a game on? So let me give you an example.
Christmas eve Day, it was I was off. I know
you guys were busting your butt here in the studio,
but it was like tangible of there's only one game
on and it doesn't come on until eight pm Eastern.
(10:40):
It was the Hawaii Bowl. Where do you think there
is like I know there are certain people that just
wouldn't have anything on. I do think there is like
the very casual sports fan that's just like, if there's
a game on, I will have it on in the
background because I know that like for me pre pre
NFL kind of trying to take over Thanks or Chris
miss Day, it would be like, Okay, well, I don't
(11:03):
really have a lot of windows in my life this
time of year where I can just watch an NBA
game and know I've been hearing about Cooper Flag or
I've been hearing about Wemby or whatever. And I do
think there are a fair amount of people that maybe
they want to be sitting there with like a notepad
in hand, like okay, in the third quarter, Wemby did this.
I do think I would push back a little bit.
(11:24):
I think there's a bigger audience than you think that
would have the NBA on if there was absolute zero NFL.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Have you considered this audience the audience of married men
who would sacrifice the Christmas viewing to save their favor,
say for this Saturday.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Well and really quick to that point. I think that's
part of the Christmas issue for the NFL is. I
think there's a lot of people that are, like I
push a lot of boundaries being a sports fan. I
get every Sunday, I get Thanksgiving Day, New Year's IM
probably gonna be on the couch at college football. Christmas
is the one that I got to sacrifice. And again,
(12:06):
you know, we'll see what the numbers are for the NFL,
and I'm sure they're gonna be great. But I do
think there is a I do think that is a
percentage of people that I don't know that the NFL
accounts for. You know, I think the NFL has become
such appointment viewing that I don't know if the NFL
fully understands that, like, Christmas Day is kind of a
line that a lot of guys, a lot of girls,
a lot of whoever, they just don't want to cross,
(12:27):
you know.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Lea Ktla yule Log won over the first hour of
calvs Nicks in my house on Christmas Day because I
said cowboys and Commanders are starting at ten. We had
just opened gifts an hour earlier. So the family's up,
my son's playing with his new toys. Do I want to,
(12:50):
you know, a bang? Jalen Brownson. I know Mike Green
wasn't doing the next Cavaliers game, but it felt at
that time for where we were on the West coast,
that'll just throw a you look at that burning on
the TV with some nice Christmas.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Carols, And I will say this, I don't know if
it makes me a bad radio host, but was on
air for four hours here got home and I was
the opposite, but the same, but the opposite just time wise.
Of yeah, I could have put on that Chiefs Broncos game,
but we could also watch home alone, or we could
also watch ELK, or we could all. And it's like,
(13:23):
at what point is my wife allowed to be a
wife and not have to sacrifice everything for my career
and my job of sports. And so it was the
same thing, just on an opposite time.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Did yulog getting any opportunity? You know what the julog is?
So it's a picture of a fireplace, That's what it is.
I figured that's just the fireplace. And then it's Christmas music. Yeah, However,
what it does put you in the Christmas spirit. It does,
And if you don't have a fireplace in your home,
it signifies the fire. So it's very festive with the music.
(13:57):
Jason Stewart, you're familiar with the Yule.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Had not know. I've lived in this town what fifty years.
I didn't know about this. I don't know when they
started it. I just had to google it. And then
they simulcast our sister station one h three point five
the coast and their Christmas music.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Yah. Yes, And my wife told me she goes when
the local radio station goes to break, KTLA will just
cover it up with their own Christmas music. Isaac, did
you ever watch the eulog on KTLA and locally? Oh?
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Here we go watching it right now, thank you very soon.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
When Jay Stu said they simulcast, I was like, please
tell me they don't just play a log sound on
the radio. So now I know it's.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
The although I'll be honest, I did not know that
it was televised on TV until right now. I knew
all about the ulog, but I didn't know that station's
actually televised.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
Honestly, maybe like six hours of eulog Iowa Sam.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
I only knew about the eulog or the burning fire
in the fireplace, Like you can watch five straight hours
of a fire burning in a fireplace on YouTube.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Yeah, and just have it.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
Like if you have like a projector a big screen
or some kind of monitor, you can just put that
on there and it it is.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
It's everything but the warmth. It makes it feel like
there's a fire or even without the heat, the sound
and the visual yes, yeah, and the and the smell
of it. But that that can be an option. I
know we veered away from NBA and NFL, but it
goes to the point of the options that that you
would go to from the NBA. That's I just think.
(15:34):
I I understand someone from the NBA being mad about this, sure,
but the and and this was the standout day for
the NBA. You're not going to be mad that there
may be an NFL game conflicting with NBA Cup Action.
In fact, I think the NBA Cup Action avoids the
NFL as much as they can. I think it's on
Tuesdays and Fridays, So I I understand where he's coming from.
(15:57):
I just think it's a it's a lost and to
think that you would completely dominate, And that's what it's
all about. It's not an NBA thing. It's more of
an ESPN and ratings thing than anything else. That's what
it comes down to. So that's why I just have
very little sympathy and empathy for the NBA.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
So I think two things are true. I agree with you,
I actually don't have sympathy for the NBA. I think
the fact that you actively put on a TV channel
with a log burning means that maybe Christmas Day is
not the land grab for sports fans that we thought of.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
Yeah, and I've I didn't like it. We grew up.
There was the Blue Gray game that I think was
played on Christmas Day, if Isaac can confirm that there
was that game, and there was, really I don't remember
much else. I didn't think the NBA had had five
games that day.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
I seem to remember the Aloha Bowl for some reason.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Yes, that would have been about it. But I grew
up in a time where it wasn't sports programming even
being an option. It was like almost like a day
of break from it. When I've told this story before,
but when I came out to Los Angeles. I didn't
realize on how much the Laker games actually meant to
people here on Christmas Day and how much of a
tradition it was, so I understand. So it's probably the
(17:16):
same thing in New York because the Knicks seemed to
play a lot of the early games, whether it be
the Knicks or the Sixers, or even the Knicks and
Sixers playing each other, like those sort of teams and
those sort of brands made a home on Christmas Day.
So that would be the Lions Cowboys equivalent of Thanksgiving Day.
I just think as an overall win for the network,
(17:36):
it's not going to be where the Cowboys and Lions
are setting broadcasting records on Thanksgiving. I don't think that
that's going to be the case for the NBA. Maybe
it was maybe Christmas Day was their highest rated day
of the year, and so they're frustrated that they don't
get that opportunity.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
To put a bow on that point about not much
going on Christmas Day. I saw our buddy Todd Furman yesterday.
I basically say, and this cut is kind of more
to your point. He said, the NBA never getting Christmas
Day back, And I'm paraphrasing Todd's tweet, but he basically said,
maybe the NBA should just consider Christmas Eve. And I
was like, to your point, can we get one day
where again, like it was nice to have the Bowl
(18:14):
game on in the background while because you know us
here on the East Coast, every or West Coast, everybody's
getting ready to go out to do whatever on Christmas Eve.
I don't need five NBA games on Christmas Eve. Just
let us let's live.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
The NFL last year had the Ravens, Steelers, Chiefs, and
Texans play on Saturday before Christmas so they could have
a week transitioning to play on Wednesday. Like that's the
lengths that they went to, is to take those four
teams because you needed those teams. You couldn't have a
team play on Sunday play again on Wednesday. Team had
(18:45):
to play on Saturday, and you only had two windows.
So they scheduled it so those two teams would play
on Saturday and then they'd mix them up and then
you'd have another two matchups with those teams on Wednesday.
That's how they made it work last year with Christmas.
Jason Stewart so.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
Given an education about the Yule log and I'm still
embarrassed that I've never heard of this. Sam had a
great line. He says it's like a fireplace in her
house without the heat. I mean, and I was, I
had a Christmas without the heat? Did you guys also
miss seeing Eric Spoulstra on the sideline?
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (19:16):
No, where's Tyler Hero when you need it?
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Man? They're at the Hawks tonight, by the way, all right,
at the Hawks right at the isn't there like at
the Hop? Isn't there a song like that in the
nineteen fifties? Huh? Something like that? I asked Isaac long
Grond There at.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
The hok the Christmas party? Hop?
Speaker 1 (19:35):
There we go? Perfect.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
Yeah, I'm still reeling from that amazing joke because that
was really well crafted.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
No heat.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
What was your joke earlier about the clown show at
the oh?
Speaker 6 (19:46):
You said Dan was saying that he's sticking to red
nose on because it's a clown show.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
That was That was pretty good stuff for that Lions fan.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
It was the Lions fan and I said, Dan was like, yeah,
he's sticking to his guns, and I'm like, yeah, those
guns are like.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Un balloon animal guns. It's not good. The second time.
This is a clown show that those do not those
leftovers do not reheat.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
Well don't they do? The guns that did that have
that thing that come out and says boom or pal.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Yeah, yeah, that's what he is. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsportsradio dot
com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
It's Covino and Rich here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
eron Torres and hey, it's me Dan Byer. Sesame Street
helped raise all of us. Now it's our turn donate
this holiday season at Sesame dot org because the world
needs Sesame and Sesame needs you a little bit. On
this Netflix presentation yesterday, I know you had you didn't
(20:44):
have this sound on. Did you see the interviews that
were being done during the Cowboys Commander's game and the
Lions Vikings game?
Speaker 3 (20:53):
So I really didn't, But I know there's zoom interviews,
and I've watched enough Manning casts to know how zoom
interview you generally go.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
As the Netflix broadcast came on and Jason Stewart, I
don't know if you were paying attention during the Clinton
Portis interview, but they go bring Clinton Portis in and
h Jacory Krosky Merrit Bill ends up ripping off a
seventy two yard touchdown run. So it's like, hey, welcome
(21:22):
in Clinton, portis Clinton. When you take a look at
this commander's team in the running game, I mean makes
you want to get And then as Bill's running down
the field for the grid. We should have done this
just but it's completely awkward to have this interview land
in the middle of a game because you may be
susceptible to a seventy two yard touchdown run and then
(21:45):
you have to become overly apologetic to the guest that
you're about to take a commercial break just after bringing
them out. Did you see this yesterday, Jason.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
I didn't see that exact moment, but I could speak
to it in general. Okay, there are many things about
this that I hate. From the producer standpoint, I understand
how it came to be. They did this meeting the
powers that be at Netflix, all the producers like, hey,
Manning cast does this thing where they bring in like
former players from the teams. It's really cool, Like, no,
(22:14):
it's not. I don't know any viewers who like it.
On the Manning cast because it's always got a weird
connection where there's a delay, and then inevitably you ask
the guests that you're beholden to ask questions to you
ask a guest and he's given this long answer. He's
not paying attention to the game, and then something like
what you just said happens. It's like, it's so awkward
(22:35):
for the viewer. I don't know how this passed all
the editorial process to happen yesterday.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
What was also great about the Clinton Portis interview, and
by the way, I think they went to stars on
each of the teams, because what was I didn't see
who the Cowboys player was. I didn't know who they
brought in for the Cowboys, but I know for the
Vikings they did Chris Carter and he was in front
of this beautiful Christmas tree and the commanders. I mentioned
(23:04):
Clinton Portis. The zoom camera was from his computer, so
all you saw was the awning and the blue sky
in the background. So it's not like he's sitting there
on a setup interview. It's truly through the computer. And
so the zoom angle, like you see so many people
would be of the ceiling, but in this instance, it's
of a blue sky and you can just tell that
(23:26):
he's sitting out on his patio, which to me lessens
the professionalism of it. And so the access is completely
negated by making this moment so small that like at
least and it's not disrespectful to Clinton Portis, it's just
they said, hey, can you connect, get a good connection
(23:47):
and make sure we can see you Chris Carter's set up.
I could still see Chris Carter's ceiling, even though with
the Christmas tree in the background, like it just it
lessens the product and it lessens the importance when you
don't have a great background setting. It's like seeing a
ceiling fan going on in the background. EMMITTT. Smith was
the was the one. Barry Sanders was the one who
(24:08):
did the They did the Lions one, and I don't
think they had a video camera for him. I think
he did a phoner wow, which honestly is the most
Barry Sanders thing. Right, Hey, Chris Carter's got this great,
beautiful Christmas tree. Clinton Portis is somewhere where it's nice
and warm and enjoying the sun, and Barry Sanders does
a phoner over the phone.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
Again, I could tell you exactly what happened if that
was the case. I didn't even see the Barry Sanders one,
but I guarantee it was. They gave Barry this these
instructions to get up from his home, and he pulled
like a typical sixty year old man, is like I
don't know what I'm doing here, and then I let's
just do the phoner and somebody's signed off on it.
Because we're paying Barry Sanders, we got to put him
(24:49):
on over the phone. But like I blame COVID, We
could blame COVID for a lot of things that are
much more serious than this. But during COVID, we all
had to do things from home. All the shows and
including cable news had to put all their correspondents and
reporters on via zoom call, and it became an accepted thing.
(25:10):
Even though it was really bad TV and the quality
was awful and you had to deal with connection issues,
we just forgave it because it was COVID. We're five years,
six years removed here, don't we don't need to do
zoom calls during games? This is not acceptable broadcast standard.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
I agree wellheartedly.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
I think I've told this story on air. But I remember,
so I worked at my first job at Fox was
at FS one for the launch of the network. This
was now like ten years ago, and I remember, like,
what was gonna make FS one different? Was like, we're
gonna be edgy, and our guys and you know whatever
didn't have to wear ties with their suits. It would
(25:49):
be like you know, or it wouldn't even have to
wear a suit, like a nice sweater and a nice
this and a nice that. And like two weeks in
the head boss was like, no, we're going suits, we're
professional or whatever. And so I bring it up because
the standard of which we allow on TV now is
mind boggling to me. Exactly what you said, like hotel
(26:11):
rooms with unmade beds in the background. Like it's the
sound quality, you know, some people have a professional mic
that you and some people you hear the echo because
it's the computer sounds. So I'm not surprised by the way.
To circle back to the beginning of this, It's why
I've never understood the appeal of the Manning cast. Like
I'm like, Okay, it's cool that you got Tom Brady,
(26:34):
but like there's a time and a place to talk
to two thousand and four AFC Championship game, and I
don't know that it's during Cowboys Eagles when I want
to focus on Cowboys Eagles, let alone all the production issues.
So like I remember when the Many cast started, Everyone's like, oh,
it's a revelation. I'm like, it's kind of weird. Like
I just I want to watch the game that I'm
supposed to be watching right now.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
So I I really appreciate and I like what Peyton
delivers like I do. Eli's I is not as polished
is Peyton, And I think it's shows in the Manning cast. Honestly,
I didn't. I haven't watched the Manning cast this year.
When I've watched the Monday night broadcast, I've watched Bucking
Aikman so with probably for some of those reasons on
(27:13):
on why Iowa Sam.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
Well, Eli's not as polished as as as Peyton is
because the the commercial that they do ratio is all imbalanced,
Like Eli needs to do five times more commercials and
he'll catch up with Peyton.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
Well, I mean, Peyton's really good at it. Of course,
I'm who is it? This said?
Speaker 6 (27:29):
I'm sick of seeing Peyton. Manning was one of his
own guests. I was h it was on the Manning Cast.
He's like, you're in too many commercials. Sure, Eli is
starting to pick up.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
I know.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
They are constantly, They're the universal around us all the time. Yeah,
the the zoom aspect of it is it's just taken over.
And then then I have Eli asking question, So Bill
Hayter's here. Bill says you uh, and you can just
tell like it's awkward. You got your start here on
Saturday Live. You uh you you auditioned in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
(28:03):
What was that all about? Like, that's like the sort
of question. And so it just completely goes off the rails,
like scripted and entertaining.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
Peyton's good at it, and Eli, I think is like
is a great clumsy compliment to Peyton's analysis. I think
he does offer insight. They're very insightful, and I could
I literally would probably still be watching the Manning Cast
if it was just the two of them reacting to
the game. There is a it's a it's a different
kind of an analysis, and it's unpolished and everything else,
(28:36):
but I think there is something literally them bringing in
these guests over zoom ruined it for me and I
stopped watching as well. I don't remember watching one this year.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
There's also a delay. Yeah, all mentioned, but go ahead, Sam.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
Another quick thing, if Aaron brought up unmade beds in
the background of like hotel zooms. If we're going to
talk about one of the all time worst things that
happened in the backdrop of some kind of interview, let's
go outside of sports, the political realm. It was Sarah Palin,
former mayor of Wisilla, Alaska, and this was when she
was running with John McCain. She's being interviewed I think
on her property or somewhere in Alaska, and in the
(29:12):
background was like some guy with a dead turkey, like
grinding it up in some machine. And she's just like, Oh,
I'm going along with this interview. And there's like this
like weird sort of like farming thing going on in
the background. You're like, oh, that's weird. I just remember
that happening. I don't, okay, d I remember John Wall
playing cards during an ESPN interview. He was playing cards.
(29:32):
He had his phone up and I think he had
a hand during his interview. It's just completely disrespectful. That's ESPN.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Well, then that goes to the Clinton Clinton porter's point,
and I don't know Clinton portis. I'm sure he's a
good guy, but like he's clearly not even watching the game.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Because he's outside.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Yeah, like the likelihood that he's well, I guess that's fair.
People have TVs outside more often. But it's like probably
not fully engaged, which is no.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
And his interview, by the way, was fine, you know,
like it was, but it just it didn't look great.
The Chris Carter interview again, like it's a camera and
it's pointed out, like he saw the top of the
Christmas tree with But it's not like they sent the
TV crew over or were able to farm out. Hey,
can you show up to Chris Carter's house. We'll pay
you guys a couple thousand dollars. He's going to do
an interview, set the whole thing up, and connect it
(30:20):
like there was none of that. It's just connected via
zoom or in Barry Sanders case, call his landline because
that's where he did the interview from. This show is

(31:12):
Tiraq play of the Day courtesy of Dave Innitt from
lear Field.
Speaker 8 (31:16):
First and ten at the twenty three stone fakes that
give protections good stone looking part the ret time man
wide open end zone touchdown all by himself and the
red side of the end zone lofton all right. He
was clear of any defender within about ten yards and
it is twenty to nothing Northwestern.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
He was all cats today as Northwestern won the game
above Sports Bowl thirty four to seven over Central Michigan.
Is our Tiraq Play of the day. We got the
Rate Bowl going on right now. Lobos and Gophers from
Phoenix Field. Looks beautiful by the way they play. Chase Field,
home of the Diamondbacks field looks magnificent in uh In, Arizona.
(32:03):
That always do well in putting the end zones. Beautiful
maroon and gold with the Gophers the Lobos wearing a
bit of a throwback more of the Land of Enchantment
colors with the turquoise and red. So it's a really
good look for the for the Rate Bowl. I thought
it was the Guaranteed Rate Bowl at one point, but
now it's just the Rate Bowl. Voice not m M.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
I was gonna say, speaking of bowl games at baseball stadiums,
you cun in the Fenway bull tomorrow eighty percent of
their roster after Jim Moore left another cop. We'll save
that for hour five of today's show. What happened to
the wasabi portion of the Fenway Bowl? Like, where's the
spicy wasabi part?
Speaker 1 (32:40):
Is that still a part of it? Idea? I don't
know what is it.
Speaker 6 (32:44):
I know it's wasabi is with sushi, but like that
was a sponsor, but that wasn't what they do.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
But this used to be the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, yes remember,
and now it was just Rate.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
Bowl, right it was it wasn't also the White Sox
Stadium Guaranteed Rate Field, and now it's just Rate Field.
Speaker 1 (32:57):
I think it's just a corporate change. It is the
Wasabi Fenway all.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
That's a man who knows some non playoff bowl games.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Speaking of non playoffs, the Lions are not going to
the postseason. And it was two years ago when the
Lions had a double digit lead in the second half
in San Francisco of the NFC Championship Game that looked
like the inevitable and that the long drought was finally over,
that the Lions were on their way to the Super Bowl,
(33:26):
only to watch them not convert on a fourth down,
have the Niners start their comeback and the Lions go home.
And it was after that game that Dan Campbell said
this you got this far.
Speaker 7 (33:37):
I don't know if a lot of people picked you
to come to the NFC title game, but disappointing end.
But what do you learn from this experience. I'm sure
you hope to get back here, you expect to get
back here, but what do you learn from this experience
of making it this far to this game.
Speaker 9 (33:52):
Well, I think one of the things you always tell
everybody who's never been here, and particularly the young players,
is you don't know which play is going to make
the difference which one. You say that every game, but
when you get in there with a heavyweight like Sam
fran Man, but it is the difference, and sometimes you
can only say so much. You gotta live it. Unfortunately,
(34:14):
you got to get your heart ripped out, which we did,
and it's a lesson learning. Look, I told those guys
this may have been only shot. Do I think that? No,
do I believe that. However, I know how hard it
is to get here, and it.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
Sure feels like today that that window of opportunity for
the Detroit Lions is now closed.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
Yeah. Yeah, A couple of things. One, I was on
air that game. I think I was filling in with
Mark Willard on a Sunday. I was also on air
during the meltdown against the Commanders last year in the
divisional rounds. So nothing's guaranteed, you know. I will give
credit to my radio partner, Jason Martin Fox Sports Radio
Saturday nights. He always says that he doesn't believe there's
(34:56):
such thing as a Super Bowl window you got or
any window NBA title college football, like when you got
the squad, you gotta get it done because there's no guarantees.
Fast forward twenty four months, and I don't think any
of us thought that the Lions would be eliminated from
the playoffs this early or period.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
It was last year they were the number one overall
seed and then ran into the Commanders in the divisional
playoffs and now not going to the postseason. They need
to get healthier along the offensive line, but their defense
just hasn't been good enough the last couple of years,
whether it be for personnel, whether it be for injuries.
That has got to get better, and you just wonder
on how long can someone like Jared Goff continue to
(35:35):
do this. So there's a lot a lot to fix
with Detroit, who's now on the outside looking in. He's
Eron Torres, I'm Dan Byer. Jason Stewart's here as his
Isaac glowin cron and Iowa Sam America's favorite game will
be played for the last time in twenty twenty five.
It's next on CNR
