today here on Cavino and Rich. Yes, Jason Stewart's our
executive producer, Hello every Fund. Ryan Smith, our technical producer
on the board. Isaac Lohan kron Is at the news desk. Hello, Isaac.
(01:04):
I was like Isaac's not gonna say anything face. He
is much much more than that. Kirk Cousins is much
much more than that, and he is something else because
the Falcons quarterback in the headlines today as the premiere
of the new docuseriies, the second season of Quarterback came
out on Netflix, and Kirk Cousins is all the rage
(01:27):
on social media as he looks back on his twenty
twenty four season and even the offseason that led him
signing with the Atlanta Falcons. Kerry Rhoades, We're gonna hear
from Cousins in a bit. But when you look back
out of season that he tried to come back from
an achilles injury, battle injuries as well and was ultimately
replaced by Michael Pennix Junior. I think ultimately you could
say it was not a successful season for the veteran quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
It it was not a success for him personally except
for the pockets, right. He got an nice little pay ray,
so I think that was okay. But as far as
playing the way that I'm sure he wonted. That did
not go the way I wanted to do.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
He wanted to do, And this is what Kirk Cousins
had to say, because Carrie is not wrong. It's always
been about the pockets and it's always been about the
money With Kirk Cousins. Take a listen to what the
Falcons quarterback had to say from Netflix in the new
Quarterback docuseries.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Wasn't expecting us to take a quarterback so high. At
the time, it felt like I had been a little
bit misled, or certainly if I had the information around
free agency, it certainly would have affected my decision. I
had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we
loved it there if both teams are going to be
drafting a quarterback high. But I've also learned in twelve
(02:36):
years in this league that if you're not entitled anything,
it's all about being able to earn your spot and
prove yourself.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
No, he said a lot there and not to addicting
well and his actions, I say, would say otherwise, Kirk
Cousins laid out. I can understand the first part, feeling misled.
I think we were all shocked on draft night when
the Atlanta Falcons took Michael Penny Junior with their first
round pick, just a month after signing Kirk Cousins to
(03:03):
a four year, one hundred and eighty million dollar contract.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
I think the only reason I was misled in that
situation is because of the money, right, because if you're
going to invest that much into a guy, obviously he
is your guy, So why would you draft his replacement
that high. I was a little bit taken amiss by that.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I think we all were. We were expecting something different.
In fact, when you watch the NFL Draft and you
watch it back and you replay that pick, that's the
whoa sort of moment that you say, we were not
expecting that. So that part completely get from that. Yeah,
I feel that there's revisionist history in Minnesota in that
(03:43):
he's saying that we could have stayed in Minnesota. It
may be true to the aspect of Minnesota wanted him
on a one year deal, Yes, and he alluded it
a little bit there that both teams would be drafting high. Yes, Well,
what's the difference then, in signing with the Atlanta Falcons
or staying with the Minnesota Vikings on a one year deal.
(04:07):
This is why Kirk Cousins is lying to you, is
because it has always been about the money. There you go,
It has always been about the money. With Kirk Cousins,
and if you don't believe me, I've got a list
carry right here of the history of Kirk Cousins in
the National Football League. By the way, none of which
am I mad at. Right. Get your money when you
(04:29):
can play the game, but don't try to sell me
a bill of goods at the other end that doesn't
match up with what your history has. In twenty seventeen,
Kirk Cousins, first quarterback in NFL history to be franchise
tagged two consecutive years, happened by the then Washington Football
Team and then the Redskins. Twenty eighteen, signs a fully guaranteed,
(04:49):
fully guaranteed three year deal with the Minnesota Vikings worth
eighty four million dollars. At that time, he was the
first player to get a fully guaranteed deal for that
much money. Eighty four million dollars hadn't happened most for
any player in NFL history at the time of that
signing in twenty eighteen, fully guaranteed three years, eighty four
(05:12):
million dollars. In twenty twenty, you're gonna hear the word
guaranteed a lot two year extension off of that three
year deal. Two year extension worth sixty six million dollars
with sixty one million dollars guaranteed, so all but five
million dollars were guaranteed. That five million dollars also essentially
(05:32):
in reading back over, the deal was basically guaranteed because
Minnesota would have been on the hook for an obscene
amount of money that were going to end up paying
him the five million dollars. But the documents will give
them the benefit of the doubt. Sixty six million dollars,
sixty one million of that guaranteed. In twenty twenty two,
signed a one year extension off of that other extension
that he signed thirty five million dollars fully guaranteed. And
(05:55):
then he goes to the Atlanta Falcons in twenty twenty
four and signs for four years, one hundred and eighty
million dollars with one hundred million dollars guaranteed. Kirk Cousins
has played the game correctly, but it's always been about
the money, yes, when you have a team. By the way,
there were no The next highest free agent signing besides
kirk Cousins in that free agency class was Gardner Minshew,
(06:18):
signing basically a backup quarterback deal. There wasn't a market
for Kirk Cousins. Him going back to Minnesota would have
been the default. It may have been planned b for him,
but that's not what he wanted to do, And in fact,
I don't think Minnesota wanted him back. I think Minnesota
wanted to move on so far from the Kirk Cousins
era that they were starting Jaren Hall, a rookie quarterback,
(06:41):
in a must win game against Green Bay in late
December on Sunday Night Football, just hoping and hoping, hoping
that maybe a rookie quarterback would be able to grab
the reins and they could have a quarterback of the future.
Failed miserably. Nick Mullens had to take over. This was
all because of Cousins' is Achilles injury. In the end,
(07:02):
Minnesota decides, we're going to chart our own course. If
you want to come back, it's going to be a
one year deal, but we're going to draft a quarterback.
You know what. Kirk Cousins says, Fine, I'll go somewhere else,
in only one place, and I'll get one hundred and
eighty million dollars. So him telling you that I want
to stay back in Minnesota. It would have been better
from my family. If the Falcons weren't coming around with
a one hundred and eighty million dollar deal, then yeah,
(07:25):
maybe he would have stayed in Minnesota. But he didn't.
You know why, because Kirk Cousins has always been about
the money. And it's why I don't feel bad one bit.
The Falcons were actually fined in doct a fifth round
pick because they tampered with Kirk Cousins because they were
talking with him so early in the process. His wife
was reportedly looking at schools for their kids in early March,
(07:46):
before free agency had even started. This is all this is.
I'm sorry. I know I'm worked up over this, but
just to hear this, this story of woe is me
and yeah, I was surprised. We all were surprised, right,
But let's be real. You took the money because you
wanted the money. That's what it was about. It wasn't
about leading the Falcons to the Super bowlers because they
(08:07):
were going to give you one hundred million dollars guaranteed
and there wasn't another team in the NFL that was
willing to pay you that. That's what this is all about.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
You want to you want to add one more ounce
of proof to what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
It's about the money, let's hear it.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
He's a two time participant to the Quarterback Show, Like
why why is he doing that show right now?
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Perfect?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Just an added in truth for you to go then
for your statement. But for him, there's always been a
cap on what he could do and what he could
be as a player, Right, so he's maximized that. I
think for him individually, he's had a really really successful career. Obviously,
his time in Minnesota was going to be up. I mean,
he wasn't going to be the guy to get them
over the hump. And you said it, I mean there
(08:47):
was one more team that was willing to, you know,
have him as an expensive stop gap to their next situation.
Obviously we didn't see Michael Pennix being that guy that
early with Atlanta drafting him that high. But he wasn't
going to be the answer there either, And so I
think that was my main I guess problem with the
deal is how much money they gave them. Right, the
(09:10):
fact that he was able to finesse them for that
amount of money is just bonkers. Yeah, the deal first
came out, it made no sense. First and foremost, he's
an Asian quarterback. Second, he does have a cap on
his talent and what he can do. Third, he's coming
off a major Achilles injury. So for him to say
anything about anybody doing him wrong in this situation and
(09:32):
this deal, it's just kind of assinine.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
It isn't quite the trifecta, by the way. Yes, and
so if you're facing all of that stuff that you
know and I know, and I think that he knows right,
and someone says we'll give you a hundred million dollars guaranteed,
where do I sign? Exactly? Where do I sign? You
want me to? You know, do you want me to
lift the field goal nets on field goals too, when
(09:54):
we're kicking field goals? I'll do it for one hundred
million dollars. Absolutely. You want me to hold the sideline
chained when we're on an offense, That's what you do
when you're coming off of that injury, That's what you do.
No one there wasn't a team out there that was
willing to give Kirk Cousins that deal. And if it
was all about doing what was right, he then maybe
would have stayed in Minnesota on that one year deal.
(10:16):
But no, it's always been about the money for Kirk Cousins.
So what it backfires on you and you get hurt
and you lose your job because they go in a
different direction. I don't agree with what the Falcons did,
but still I just have zero empathy or sympathy for
Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
And I actually agree with what Atlanta did. He wasn't
playing well at all, so and I think this is
the other part of that conversation. If he played well,
he would still be the guy right now, and even
if they drafted Pennix, he still would be playing. But
he did not live up to even his part of
that of that bargain.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
I think it's also easy to point back to Minnesota
because of the injury that JJ McCarthy went through, And
so when you do reference that previous stop, if Cousins
was still there, maybe he's still in line to be
the starter. Maybe there's a quarterback battle this offseason. But again,
he got a one hundred million dollars guaranteed he was
with Minnesota. The Quarterback Series showed him rehabbing in Minnesota,
(11:09):
and the next thing you know, he's signing a deal
with the Atlanta Falcons for that amount of money and
talking about the roots that they had in the state
of Georgia and how excited they were to be there.
But again, this was all laid out. The Falcons had
him with their trainer in early March. That was the
evidence that that got busted on the tampering, that he
(11:30):
was meeting with a Falcons team doctor to find out
how well along his achilles injury was. Wow, I didn't
know that. Yes, So that's part of what the NFL
docked the Falcons for for the tampering of Kirk Cousins
during free agency. So when I sit down and I
did watch, I fast forward through the Jared Goff and
Joe Burrow portions of the first episode because the Kirk
(11:52):
Cousins deal was trending. People were talking about it, and
I watched it and he comes acros. He's been a
great meet person. To your point, who's doing this twice?
You know it's Kirk Cousins. Is he knows how to
play the game. You know. Golly, there's a whole great
Clips sponsorship that's thrown in even mentions it in the
(12:13):
quarterback thing. And then Adam Schefter's tweeting earlier today, Kirk
Cousins and Great Clips have reached this deal where if
you're in The Great Clips when Kirk Cousins is getting
a haircut, you also get a free haircut. It's all
about the money, So don't feel bad when Kirk Cousins
can't throw the football to the right team that he's
being benched. It's always been about the money for Kirk Cousins,
(12:35):
and that's why I just don't buy anything that he says.
And it's okay, it's fine, it's that's what it's about.
But don't sit here and tell me how the Falcons
wronged you and how you were putting such a tough
spot when you got one hundred million dollars that no
other team in the NFL, including the team you just
paid played for, would be willing to pay you.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Dan, I just want to know what day is that
the the Great Clips day so I can show up
at the one. Yes, because he's he's going to be
going to all the different ones. Absolutely. I just it's
and it goes on.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
And I didn't see the rest of the episodes because
there's you know, a bunch of different episodes. But he
talks about playing through the injury because he doesn't want
Michael Pennox to be the starting quarterback. You played the NFL.
I get that, Like you know, you never want to
give up your spot. You don't want to you want
to do it for your team. There is some responsibility
also of fulfilling your contract. Yes, Now, do I think
(13:32):
that he's thinking to himself, well, I'm not going to
get the other eighty million million dollars guaranteed, so I
better continue to play. I don't think it went that deep.
At that point. He was already guaranteed one hundred million dollars.
He is a competitor. He does want to win, absolutely,
But I get that portion of it. But this whole
lead up in this look back, and well, we never
would have left Minnesota if that was the case. As
(13:54):
we said Minnesota, I don't think really wanted him back,
right And now he's trying to make himself the victim.
And when you get a hundred million dollars guaranteed coming
off of everything that you said, the Achilles injury in
the age, sorry, don't feel bad for you.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yeah, no, it's there's no sorry, no feeling sorry for
the guy right now. I mean, obviously, like you said.
We both said, I mean, he's made a lot of
money in his league, and he's played some really good
football and played some down football. That's part of being
the pro. But yeah, at this point, nobody wants to
hear the sob story from Kirk Cousins at all.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Jason tweets in and says, don't forget Washington kind of
dragged him along and had the RG three deal in Washington.
But that's I felt like like Kirk Cousins was a
victim of circumstance there because he was brought in later.
I don't envy the spot that he was in. Yeah,
but in that situation, isn't RG three the real victim
(14:45):
because you drafted another quarterback in that same draft draft? Yeah, So,
like I get like, if I'm Kirk Cousins and Washington
isn't willing to pay him the contract that he wanted,
he says, fine, I'm good enough. I'll just play under
the franchise tag. It's more beneficial for me to make
you franchise take me for the second time. I get
the whole tenure in Washington. I don't think that there's
(15:05):
just any point where I feel bad for him because
I feel he's gained the system enough. And if we
want to talk about that rookie year, I feel RG
three was more of the victim in anything, because now
there's a quarterback there that may try to undermine what
you're trying to do. Is the first overall pick, your
second overall pick. Yeah, there's nothing we said it. There's
nothing to be sorry about. Man, he was he was
a fourth round pick. He's exceeded all expectations on from
(15:28):
that perspective alone. Right his play in Washington very steady.
I knew he was the guy that would have a
chance there in Washington because of RG three's style of
play at the time, where now you know game plans
even with the Lamar Jackson now like even those things
are more game plan specific for that type of quarterback,
where when RG three came in, it was not quite
(15:49):
there yet.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Even though they knew they had that type of player,
teams weren't ready to go to that style of offense
completely yet now and protect him in a way that
was the way he was gonna need it, Kirk, Cause
then I applaud you for always being ready and being
the guy that, even though you may not have been first,
you had a bigger vision for yourself being that guy
we applaud you. Right now, isn't the time to be
(16:11):
the guy that you're trying to make a sorry sorry
for you.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
It's just not going to work. Great point. Jason Stewart's
our executive producer.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Let's talk about that last part, right, Because he agreed
to do this show. He's getting paid to do the show.
And I'm guessing Carrie, you know more about this than
we do. But like when a reality show approaches you,
and by the way, they skipped last season because they
couldn't get enough quarterbacks to do this show. Part of
the sales pitch, probably from the agent is Kirk, you know,
(16:39):
let's start thinking about the next career. Let's let's let's
further procure your your public image for sure for your
next career. Right, So he volunteers to do this, he's
getting paid to do it. He doesn't need to say
this on camera, like this is something that you might
admit to your immediate family members or other quarterbacks that
(17:01):
have eight figures in the bank, Like, but you just
don't admit this on a reality show where you're doing
it for all optics presumably, right, Yep, go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
I was just going to say, you don't admit it
unless you're trying to spin the story your way and
using it as that platform for that. So, yeah, you're right,
that would be something that you're like, all right, maybe
we should have stayed in Minnesota. But to sit down
knowing that you're going to be asked that question, because
this question was asked months prior. It's not like a
live interview done on Sports Center, Fox Sports One or
(17:32):
anything like that. It's it's a prepackaged piece. You know
exactly what you're saying in that point.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
One hundred percent strategic, right, I mean, now it is
he's he's on the back nine, right, it's a chance
for him to, you know, gain some sympathy, gain a
different perspective about what his intentions were when he headed
to Atlanta.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
And that's all. It's just a spin job. Yeah, he's done.
Only on the back nine. He's caddying for Michael Pennocks
Junior now and he's telling them the wrongs in Atlanta
because it's just what a mess. Now we're a month,
by the way, we're less than a month from training camp.
We know that he's unhappy. They were unable to deal him.
Is this aid in that effect? I didn't watch the
first full Quarterback series either. Cousins was a part of
(18:14):
that again as you said, ye, but also during that,
wasn't Marcus Mariota a part of that? And then he
ends up getting benched. So you're seeing these different aspects
of it. And I'm sure quarterback is thinking, well, hey,
we just had Cousins. We'll see if he wants to
come back to both your point, yeah, let's do it,
go right ahead. It shows a different Hey, I'm trying
to come back from injury. But in Kirk Cousins mind,
(18:36):
it's watch my comeback. We're going to have it documented
and it's going to be amazing, Like watch this thing.
Because the cameras were rolling before they even drafted Michael
Penix Junior on this docu series. This was happening during
the free agency or after the free agency period in
March of twenty twenty four.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Is he the most expensive backup quarterback? I think that's
I think that's uh.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, I think yeah. How would say so? Yes? And
shame on the Falcons forgiving, Like I don't. I don't
agree with the Falcons making the move that they did,
even though it worked out for them in the end,
like they covered their basis. But I felt that they
were ready to win last year, which is why they
wanted Kirk Cousins to come in, and it didn't end
(19:22):
up happening. I think Atlanta's in a really good spot
in twenty twenty five. There's not a lot of expectations,
and I actually feel they're going to be really good offensively. Offensively,
I think they have a really good offensive line, which,
by the way, then if they do have success. Guess
whose story gets hurt Kirk Cousins because of what he
didn't do last year, and we're gonna I'm curious to
see the rest of the piece and him talking about
(19:44):
his injury. I get that gamesmanship with a player, but
no player has maneuvered more in their NFL career to
maximize their dollars than Kirk Cousins, including again taking the
one hundred million dollars guaranteed from the Atlanta Falcons. So
don't cry about not going back to Minnesota. There you go,
as that Vikings whole deal was playing out in the
(20:05):
year that he was injured, because they started off slow
and then they played a really good stretch of football,
and then he got injured in that game against Green
Bay at Lambeau Field. Their season ended up taking a
turn because of what they were trying to find out
at quarterback. But I just remember I remember sitting in
the studio and finding out that they were starting Jaren
Hall for that game against the Packers on Sunday night.
(20:28):
And that told me because they had started Jaron Hall
earlier in the season in a game against the Falcons,
which at that time mid season, not a big deal,
but the Vikings were teetering on the playoffs. They could
have possibly gotten in and playing green Bay your arrival
at home on Sunday night football. They started Jaron Hall
and he was atrocious, and green Bay destroyed Minnesota. I
think thirty three to ten was the final. So at
(20:50):
that point, Minnesota knew that they weren't going to have
Jaron Hall be their future quarterback. And as ridiculous as
it sounds when I'm saying that, think of what would
have happened. If Minnesota would have won thirty three to ten,
they would have said, we have our quarterback of the future,
this is our guy. And I think it's just it
completely backfired on them. So then when the off season
comes around and they're talking about Kirk Cousins, they are
(21:11):
thinking about taking a quarterback early. And even though Cousins
mentioned it in that clip, he could have stayed there.
It would have been the same exact situation. The only
difference he wouldn't have got one hundred million dollars guaranteed.
And that's why he ultimately went to Atlanta.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
Fox Sports Radio had the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
It's Cavino and Rich here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
the NFL vets all pro starter since day one Carrier Roads.
I'm Dan Byer Cavino and Rich. We'll be back in
this spot tomorrow talking about spending as a sports fan.
I missed that Dan started from day one. Yes, I
haven't heard that in a while. Well, it's back there.
He is day one starting lineups carry Rhoads. Is there.
(21:57):
We head back to the state of Florida. Tony's on
the line. I hope Tony isn't really Jonathan who called
to tell us to be smart about our money. Tony,
Welcome into Cavino and Rich talking about the price that
it is to be a sports fan. Welcome in.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
Thanks. Yeah, I barely got through junior college, so there's
no financial.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
You got.
Speaker 8 (22:19):
But by the way, Carrie Rhoades, did they take to.
Speaker 7 (22:23):
Laugh for the like Republican on the odd Couple? I
love that laugh that they play with that you.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I don't think so. But if it is, I need
credit for that. I need a little compensation too.
Speaker 7 (22:37):
No, no, but Parker Place. Anyway, to the point I
was gonna tell you, I really.
Speaker 8 (22:43):
Do believe well, number one, I know.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
That if it's not gonna happen, but if we went
back to cash, there is an actual pain of feeling
that when you hand over cash. It's different than clipping
your phone, swiping.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
You know, Apple pegsiking anything.
Speaker 7 (23:02):
Swiping your your you know you can swipe your palm
and uh, it's it's definitely kind of think of the
the guy playing the piano in the luxurious part of
the Titanic as it was going down, he refused to
stop playing.
Speaker 8 (23:18):
And I believe that's.
Speaker 7 (23:21):
Kind of where the direction family we're heading. If that's
what these numbers are in sports, and it's it is
pick and.
Speaker 8 (23:28):
Choose Generation Z or like anyone I would say in their.
Speaker 7 (23:31):
Mid or twenties and younger. They've kind of tred at
least in this country. Not the immigrants, but they've kind
of trashed, in my opinion, the idea of what money
is anymore, because it's just things getting thrown around in account.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
So I do believe that they are going for the moment,
like the memory.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
Obviously, and it's just something.
Speaker 8 (23:57):
That I don't see. Like if give.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
Me thirty seconds. There's a girl I work with that.
Speaker 8 (24:04):
She's twenty four and refuses to get a driver's license
like a lot of her peers, and she has to.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
Lift back and forth in the middle of the rush hour,
gets her lunch, her net.
Speaker 8 (24:17):
I after her net what she makes every day going
up is four dollars more than what she has to lose.
So I asked her, what are you doing here? And
she goes, life is you get.
Speaker 7 (24:28):
Out of the house? My mom told me, you know.
Speaker 8 (24:31):
So it's just nothing's really adding up.
Speaker 7 (24:34):
It's not making sense, and that's you know. I think.
Speaker 8 (24:39):
I think we'll also.
Speaker 7 (24:40):
Being lied to about the numbers as well. I mean,
Stewart said that sixty five, but everyone's bringing home forty
five to fifty. That's real. But everyone's kind of telling
us that there's these these people for who knows who,
making observing amounts of money doing whatever online.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Sure Tony, well, jeez, Tony got the acts is that
you I am? I think Tony. Tony brought up a
lot of great points and the the I think there
are three different arguments that are being brought into this.
The New York Times says, again, forty eight fans pay
(25:20):
up the forty eight hundred dollars a year. That's not
the average. That's up to forty eight hundred dollars a year. Yes,
My point is if you're spending that money and it
makes you feel good. Like me, sports are a majority
of my life. Now as I've gotten older, done maybe
more old guy things yard work and stuff like that
that'll invest money in. But sports has been from you know,
(25:43):
a part of my life ever since I was born.
So there is something that I am involved in, always
tied to. So I don't feel money to Jason and
the Break just asked you what do you like to
spend money on? Right, and you said music, like that's
your thing? What was your thing Jason that you had?
Speaker 5 (26:00):
I'm a poker guy, I spent a little too much
money on poker every.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Year, and you know, you can sit there and you
can pick apart whether it be concerts or whether it
be poker tournaments or the sports stuff that I do.
It's a different argument on what the teams are charging
and what the leagues are charging for the prices. It's
a different argument if you are spending beyond your means,
like this person was at their work where they weren't
even coming out on top for showing up to work.
(26:25):
They just needed to get out of the house. And
it's a different argument on if you are overspending what
you can afford for sports apparel. I just feel the
article and the piece was aiming to show how fans
are being priced out, and I understand that, but I
still think that there are ways where you can enjoy
sports and spend money and feel good about it. That's
(26:47):
where I'm coming from. And Dan, this is another one.
I'm gonna throw one one point out there. Everything about
the times we're living in right now, it's about fear.
Like when you see an article like that, it's jarring,
It sets you back, and it makes you realize, obviously
at the max, like people are spending that much with sports.
(27:10):
Right Again, as big as sports as you are, your
number is significantly lower. Right.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
I think there is a happy medium there, obviously that
we can find with this spending stuff on the stuff
you want it to be on, but always come back
to fear Like it's almost like if we're fear mongering
people to not do the things that they love in
our time. Right now, do the things you love. You
can do it responsibly. That numbers on the high end,
but all numbers aren't that number.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
I have a guy coming over tomorrow that's gonna put
new screens on some of my windows, right, did I
Am I excited about getting new screens? Heck? No, Okay,
it's not excited at all. I'm glad it's getting taken
care of. But am I gonna sit there and get
this high off of seeing the new screen when I
(27:56):
open the window? No, it's gonna look like the old screen,
except just in a little better condition. That's the money
that maybe I would use on buying tickets to a
Lakers game or a Clippers game. So guess what, we
don't go to it? Right? That stings. That stinks, but
it comes from the same purse. The same account that
(28:16):
you would have stuff like, you know, of expendable money,
or at least stuff that maybe isn't I'm not going
to get new screens every single year, like it's just
not going to happen and just we need them now.
I got to do it. So there are things that
I'm going to have to adjust to. But I'd much
rather be looking online at a new hoodie that's coming
out for you know, in the NFL, or in college
(28:37):
sports or in the NBA than having to pay some
guy to put new screens on my windows.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
You don't like the new screens, I would beg to
differ that. The myths is love the new sport.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
She will yes, yes, and that's why it takes priority.
That's why there will be one less cap there in
sweatshirts and ticket In our household.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our ship ohs at Foxsportsradio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
I know sometimes sports babies can be crying at the
checkouts after purchasing apparel for their new team. I say
that should not be the case. Bye with joy here
on Fox Sports Radio Today. Joyous Tuesday, July eighth. Cavino
and Rich were in for Dan Patrick earlier today. Guys
will be back in their normalst spot tomorrow. Carry Rhoads
this year. I'm Dan byer Isaac lowincron is at the
(29:27):
news desk. Jason Stewart's our executive producer, and Ryan Smith,
our technical producer. As we are all hanging out on
this Tuesday, want to let you know that today's show
is brought to you by Express Employment Professionals. Do your
summer plans include a new job? Want to work with
an expert in your local job market to find the
right role. We'll just call your local Express Employment Professionals
go to expresspros dot com and Express never charges job
(29:49):
seekers a fee. We are talking about money here, As
a recent report from The New York Times, Carrie Rhoads said,
sports fans pay a lot of money per year to
support their teams. Do you know how much money a
year sports fans like one specific person, And we're talking
(30:10):
about one game ticket to each of the four leagues,
two jerseys, two hats, streaming services. What would that total
seem to you? If you were a sports fan went
to a football game, baseball game, NBA game and an
NHL game, bought a couple of jerseys, bought a couple
of hats, high speed internet for your home so you
(30:32):
can watch this stuff on the streaming services. Paying for
all the streaming services where all these games are. How
much do you think that would run? So that sounds
about about five about five k wow? Geez, does he
know the answer to this? You're supposed to say, oh,
about fifteen hundred dollars, And I say, uh, Carrie, maybe
(30:52):
in two thousand and four, but in twenty twenty four,
the New York Times says four thousand, seven hundred and
eighty five dollars a year is what sports fans pay.
That's the highest amount to be a fan of their
sports team. They have to forty eight hundred dollars a
year to be a fan of their sports team. That's
(31:13):
a lot of Money's a lot of money. Yeah, But
you know what I say, money well spent. I don't
I get that. There's budgets and every household has to
deal with it. Some have larger budgets, some have smaller budgets.
Some have priorities, some don't. But you know what sports
(31:34):
provides for me? Fun entertainment, passion, excitement, all of that.
That's what I want to spend my money on.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
That.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
I know that the article is shocking, and in a
way it's supposed to be, like, look at how it's
priced out the common family. That completely stinks it does
it does? However, buying jerseys for your kids it's fun.
I love buying sports stuff for my son. It's exciting
to be able to buy a jersey for yourself or
(32:08):
a hat. To buy all that stuff, i'd much or
either I get much more from sports in buying those
packages that I pretty much do. Of anything else that
I spend my free income on, or income that isn't
designated to a water bill or a gas bill, I
have no problems with it. Now. Do I want to
spend forty eight hundred dollars? No? Will I buy a
(32:30):
ticket to every sports league that there is, No, I
won't do that. But I have no problem in spending
my money on a jersey or a shirt or a
hat that comes in because honestly it makes me feel good.
Well yeah, I mean, and I think what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
I mean, it's it's a keepsake, right, Like you have
an opportunity I mean, obviously you could do some of
that stuff with other things as well. But when you
talk about sports a lot of times, there's there's moments
in sports that we'll always remember, right There's those you know,
there's this crazy hell Mary, there's a big comeback in
the super Bowl. There's all these things that happen in
(33:06):
the world of sports where it's almost like where were
you when that happened?
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
When you actually buy it or purchase it and you
have that keepsake, that's something that's really special. I think,
especially when you have you start having kids and you
start you know, opening your household up that way, and
you want to pass something on to your kid a
moment like that, even if they're not a sports fan,
that's something they can look at and say, my dad
loved that or my mom loved that, and they will
(33:31):
find some value in that, in that thing, and also
outside of your memory of it or the person that's
buying it or taking part of that experience, passing it
on to someone else that you feel as special to you,
they have that bond and that tige as well. So
I look at it that way. I know that your
specific situation is different. Because you played sports, and I
alway feel like when you're an athlete, like there there
(33:52):
isn't necessarily the tie. You probably had favorite teams growing
up and everybody that you cheered for, but once you
get in the league, it just becomes different for you.
So when you heard that it's five thousand dollars or
forty eight hundred dollars up to for a sports fan,
does that resonate with you in any way of like,
is it a jolt? Is it shocking?
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Is it surprising that it would cost that much for
someone to do the things? By the way, we're not
saying every fan is paying five thousand dollars a year,
but what they did is they priced it out to
with all four leagues, apparel, how you consume it at home,
and that's the number they came up.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
But I think the numb one thing when I hear
it is obviously it's jarring when you hear that number
four people that probably shouldn't be spending the amount of
money to do anything that's outside of the essential stuff.
So I would say jarring on that from that perspective.
But we pay for everything in life, right, what's the
value of what you're paying for if you're a super
(34:50):
fan and somebody that finds value in that, then you're
paying for the experience, the value. You're paying for that
moment of time that you'll never get it back, minus
the keepsake. Right, So I could appreciate it that way,
but I also you said it, it's different for me.
I'm not a super fan of all the four leagues,
(35:11):
and I'm not going to pay that amount of money
for that because I'm not experiencing it that way.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
Right.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
I don't think everybody is. This is a general number,
but I also think that number isn't as big as
we're making it same for everybody.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
I think we're all sports fans here, coming from different
angles of course. Jason Stewart, you're the one that actually
gave me a heads up on this story when you
heard it was forty eight hundred dollars compared to by
the way, in two thousand and four, it was thirteen
hundred dollars a year, So three hundred and twenty one dollars. Wow.
But so you see the story, it obviously piques your
interest for what reason, because that's.
Speaker 5 (35:44):
A lot of money, and I think a lot of
Americans are living in debt. Right now, I think a
lot of Americans live over their head. I just ran
the quick numbers. Now, sixty seven thousand dollars is the
average salary of a single in this country. The take
home on sixty seven thousand is roughly forty five hundred bucks.
(36:05):
I'man forty five thousand dollars, right, So a tenth of
your take home on average is being spent on this.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Now.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
I know your point is it's worth it. They're these
are they're building memories, these are things they'll never be
able to take away. But to me, the first thing
that came to mind answer your question is we are
an irresponsible spending country and this is very on brand
for Americans.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Interesting, go ahead, Gerry, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
No so, Jay, So like you're if you're not spending
that forty eight hundred on the thing you want to
do the most as a as a fan, not even
a super fan, as a fan like you have, You've
worked numerous amount of hours. You have this one thing
that brings joy to your life. The value of that,
you don't see the value in that. I know it's high,
(36:53):
don't get me wrong, but just for that, no, no.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
I do see the value in the experiences. But we
know that a lot of this is is in gear
and what merchandise or what have you that you probably
shouldn't spend money on. And that's what I think about.
I'm curious to hear from the listener as well. You
can find carry at Carrie twenty five r ods. You
can find me at Dan Byer on Fox. The phone
(37:17):
numbers Cavino and Rich always welcomed me in eight seven
seven nine nine on Fox. That's nine nine six six
three sixty nine eight seven seven nine on six six
three six'. Nine and do you Have jason's reaction where
it's a lot of? Money do you have my reaction to,
Say i'm spending stuff on stuff THAT i. Love, YEAH
i think that the point of the, Article jason was
(37:38):
your reaction to be, like this is how shocking it,
is this is how this is how it's expensive it
has now, become this is how all of these sports
leagues are trying to find ways to get into your.
Pocket AND i JUST i look at it as a different.
Way i'm A seahawks. FAN i like looking at The
(38:01):
Seahawks Pro shop to see what they've got for, gear
and even THOUGH i like to play golf a, lot
and you're gonna see me nine times out of ten
in a golf polo THAT i wear to. WORK i
feel different When i'm, like OH i like. THAT i
like That seahawks. Hoodie that's different for. Me AND i
know it's just putting the logo on it what it,
is but it's a different feel to. Me it's something
(38:23):
that IS i just look at a polo. Shirt it's,
like all, right it's the polo shirt THAT i wear to,
Work like that's what it. Is like there's, something it's
a separation of. It so IF i have this extra
money And i'm completely blanking on the phrase right, NOW
i how we talk about Our, yes, yeah expendable. Income
If i'm putting it all on sports or putting it
on that, amount at, Least I'm i'm, excited like to
(38:48):
be able to watch all the games On sunday ticket
if that's part of your streaming thing On sunday. Afternoon
we long for those eighteen weeks of the regular season all,
year like people are itching for. It that to me
is money well. Spent and while it is expensive and
maybe you have to make, DECISIONS i just don't look
(39:08):
at this that, way, like WOULD i want to spend
five thousand, Dollars, NO i would cut out the hockey
game that's included in. This, right maybe we're not going
TO nfl games in, person but IF i am going to,
One i'm buying a sweatshirt or something for my son
and we're going and MAYBE i figure out a different
way to do. It BUT i felt LIKE i just
felt the angle of the article was to dissuade people
(39:30):
from spending money on, sports and when it is a
very very tough financial time right, Now yes it. IS
i just find that there's other stuff that we wasted,
on and this at least makes me excited about What
i'm at least What i'm consuming or What i'm.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Buying and that would.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Be my, counterpoint, right, like what else are you going
to spend it? On because we're going to have to
spend it living In america right, now it's expensive any
way you cut, it, Right so there's not you're not
cutting anywhere. Else it's just depending on where you want
to give them money.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
TOO i remember a story that WAS i don't know the,
person but this story is stuck with me for seventeen,
years and it was Super bowl forty, three The steelers
played The Arizona cardinals and we were in our media
seating In tampa at the, game and there's a group of.
People now We're when you have A Super, bowl not
(40:23):
all media can fit into the press. Box so what
they do is they take a section of the stadium
and they mark it off for media to sit at
This Super. Bowl it was basically three rows from the.
Top the fireworks were little right at your back from the.
Stadium we were up. There BUT i remember somebody talking
about this friend of theirs that they knew From pittsburgh
(40:44):
because it was A pittsburgh media, member and they were
talking to this, guy and the guy told the story and,
said This steelers, Fan, rentz has purchased a condo In
pittsburgh and stays there for all ten games because at
that time sixteen game, schedule you had two preseason home
games ten, games and so ten times a year he
(41:07):
goes back To pittsburgh and that's where he stays and
takes in The steelers. Weekend says the guy doesn't spend
his money on anything. Else that's where his expendable income.
Came and this was again seventeen years. AGO i don't
know how much a condo And pittsburgh, cost but the
guy wanted to put his money because he was A
steelers fan to make sure that he gets to go
to the games and has a place to, stay and
then maybe used it as an investment. Property and the
(41:29):
host's point that was telling us about this guy says
that's where his priorities. Are and it always stuck with
me that if that's where your priority, is if that's
where you're that deep into, it hats off to. You
if that's what you love and that's what you want to,
do then go ahead and spend your. Money there's a
million other ways to blow. It you can blow it on.
Gambling you, can you, know like you can people go
(41:50):
down that road like there's ways to do. It Like
it's just there are a lot of different ways that
you can spend your. Money and if something makes you,
happy like sitting at home watching football all day on A,
sunday then it's worth buying that streaming. Package one.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
HUNDRED i, MEAN i COULDN'T i couldn't have said it.
BETTER i, MEAN i think there is it's. Value it's
finding value in what you want to find a value,
in and if that's what you want to do and
spend it, on then do it that. WAY i think
whenever you see or hear those, numbers obviously it's it's
a it's a far cry from where we used to
be as far as the numbers and the pricing of.
(42:23):
Things but that's, worldwide that's every that's with everything that
we could. Buy it's way more. Expensive so, yeah find
the value in. It jonathan is In. Miami he wants
to talk, About oh, yeah the expense of. Sports John, Well,
jonathan welcome In Fox Sports.
Speaker 9 (42:40):
Radio are You i'm doing. Unbelievable, Actually i'll look at
a different. Perspective i'm a financial, professional and quite, frankly
it cares me to see how people don't say the
nickel for, retirement that are willing to spend forty five
hundred or five thousand hours a year on. Sports it's,
great it's a few, hours spend it with your, kids
(43:01):
but then you're living in your kid's basement when you're
seventy years, Older, John, unfortunately that is the. Problem that's
the problem in today's.
Speaker 8 (43:10):
World.
Speaker 9 (43:10):
Unfortunately so that's my perspective as an older.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
Person you're being you're being way too, logical AND i
felt like in all of, This BUT i would also,
say if you're spending up to five thousand dollars a
year to do, this are you spending on other? Things
that's the. POINT i will also say, This not everybody's
it's gonna be very. Morbid i'm. Sorry not everybody's making
(43:36):
it to retirement to that point OF Suret LIKE i
thought about, this this is Like i've, So I'm i'm
a couple of years away from being. Fifty i'm If
i'm being, Honest i'm a year and a half away
from being. Fifty oh. Damn put it out. There at
some point my golf game is the golf ball is
not going to be hit as far as it is just.
(43:59):
Not it's going to start. To so When i'm sixty,
five DO i want to go out and play golf
then at those at the top courses or WHAT i
want to do it? Now WHEN i feel LIKE i
can do it my best and have that. EXPERIENCE i
GET i, Know i'm sitting here And i'm on national
radio going against a financial advisor on what to do
(44:19):
with your. Money But i've thought about this a, lot
AND i get. It it's the right thing to it's
the right thing to. Do And i'm not saying to
avoid your four to oh one k or rath or
whatever you've. Got it's just the point of if it
gives me, enjoyment it's more valuable to me than the
other ways THAT i could end up spending my money
(44:41):
and not get anything from.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
It and the thing is, here we're talking about hopefully
five thousand dollars that you can. Spend this isn't saying
you're tapping into your straight.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
POINTS i got, YOU i got you.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
Back, down like we're not talking about reaching in your
pocket for something that we said expendable, Income like this
is something that we could use and we can put
it to wherever we want to put it. To so
if you have forty eight hundred to spend and spend
in the place you want to spend it and have,
value do. It it's not as hard as we're making
it seem right.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Now it's. High we know that that's not going to.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
Change that's where we are as a. Society the money
and spending is an. Issue but if you have five
forty eight, hundred five thousand dollars to spend on, something
you want to spend. ON i don't think that's a bad.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Thing it's different when you're talking about, gambling when you're
doing those sort of, things that's not included any of. This,
yeah maybe by one, jersey don't buy two. Jerseys maybe
buy one, hat don't buy two. Hats it, said maybe
don't go to THE nhl OR nba, game watch it
from the house that you're buying the streaming packages from
instead of, like those are the ways to save. It
(45:49):
that's the. Budget, YEAH i JUST i felt like because
of the comparison for how much it cost in two
thousand and, four there's no doubt it's more than three
times what it was twenty years, ago according to these,
numbers thirty hundred to almost forty eight hundred. Dollars it,
Is it truly. Is AND i know that we want
to say sports fans in these leagues are taking advantage
(46:10):
of all of, us BUT i know darnwell when Show
Heyo tani signed with The dodgers in these, hallways how
many people were trying to get their show Hey Tani dodger? Jerseys?
Right and if it's eighty nine dollars or one hundred
and nine dollars for whatever it, is it's twenty dollars.
Difference you're still in it for ninety, dollars and if
they up charge you twenty, bucks that's, things but that's
a part of. It and you're not gonna worry about.
That when you're the first buddy that you have that's
(46:31):
wearing the new Show Heyo tani jersey and you show
up to work and everybody, says where'd you get? That i'm,
sorry there's some excitement over. It i'm not saying to
be frivolous with your. Money i'm just SAYING i feel
that there is value in investing into your sports, fandom
AND i just don't have a problem with.
Speaker 5 (46:48):
It you talk about the Shohil A tani. Jerseys SO
i just went to The dodger game On. Sunday i'll
do it five or six times a, year AND i
always have the same. Thought maybe this speaks to the
Way i'm. Wire but WHEN i pay for those beers
and those nine dollars hot dogs and everything, else And i'm,
Thinking i'm not even bringing a family of four or. Five,
(47:10):
yeah and you look around and all those families are
equipped in brand new o tawny jerseys And dodgers custom made,
shoes and you're, like how do these families afford these?
Speaker 2 (47:24):
Experiences? Isaac that raises an interesting.
Speaker 1 (47:28):
Question, guys we, talk we hear about in business and
society the bubbles around the turn of the. Millennium it
was the dot com, Bubble there was even a regional
sports net. Bubble from a sports consumer, standpoint is there
any stopping sports? Consumption will people ever stop buying tickets or?
(47:49):
Merchandise is sports as an industry recession proof or bubble bursting?
Proof IF i can put it that, WAY.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
I think, Yes AND i think that's why THE. Nfl
THE nfl got to a point where more people would
rather stay at. HOME i think they were worried about
staying at home as opposed to going to actual. GAMES
i felt that there was. Teetering as, RECENTLY i still
feel like it's become so big though that now it's
kind of flattened out and it doesn't. Matter you're still
(48:18):
trying to go to the big. Games every game now
almost feels like a big game because of all the
different windows that they. Have, Right, SO i don't see
a bubble coming at any point to What isaac is.
SAYING i just think what happens is you cut back
and what you really don't. Love, Right that's WHAT i.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
Think and you won't be able to bust it because,
again you don't have to step outside of your house
to get that experience. Anymore, right it's in your. House
you have to stream it to even watch. It, right
it's not on NATIONAL. Tv you have to spend money
to actually consume, It so it won't happen that. Way
but also throw out the question of like people are
(48:58):
spending money on whatever they want to spend it all,
right you have Your disney, adults you have your people
that go To.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
Disney how expensive is that? Now so it's it's it's
you're you're gonna spend money.
Speaker 5 (49:06):
REGARDLESS a friend of mine and he he basically says
kind of what you've e've been, Saying. Dan he loves,
concerts and he, SAYS i work to basically fund my concert.
Fetish he just likes going around the country and seeing
bans and he justifies. It so to your, point if
if you're saying that you're choosing to spend money on
(49:28):
what you really love and the things that you don't,
love you're not spending money.
Speaker 2 (49:31):
On, RIGHT a lot Of the.
Speaker 5 (49:33):
Things that you don't love are obviously like rent and
food and.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
Electricity, yeah not saying skip rent to see The chargers
you're back And. Raiders it's so.
Speaker 3 (49:41):
Far, yeah your your your, father your, son or your
daughter won't enjoy.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
That there's there's there his there's an extreme to. Everything
AND i Appreciate jonathan calling in and saying, like, right,
hey you know it's his business as, well but that's
not NECESSARILY I i JUST i think it's a different.
Kind there's other ways that they can put money into
the four oh ONE. K if you're that much of
a fan and, LISTEN i get sports teams get. YOU
(50:07):
i see THE, nfl THE nfl now with the throwback.
Uniforms i've everybody knows that The eagles look better In kelly.
Green we know The seahawks look better in their silver and.
Blue we know The buccaneers look better in their. Creamsicles
but no one's gonna buy the other. Stuff if that's
the alternate, Uniform if it's the main, jersey actually has
to be not as good as your, alternate because fans
(50:29):
will buy. Both then if it's if it's, better they'll
only buy the one they wouldn't. Buy they wouldn't buy
The seahawks one that they were now because everybody likes
what they're wearing with their. Throwback if that was the normal,
one you got to make the popular one the one
off because that allows you to buy more. Jerseys and
THE nfl does it with training camp hats and then
(50:51):
opening season you've got your sideline. Apparel then guess what
crucial catch. Month then In november it's The armed forces
and your, veterans and you're wearing camouflage on the, sidelines
all different ways to try to get you to. BUY
i understand those. Tricks we complain about THE nba and the.
Jerseys they're wearing four different jerseys because they want us
to buy four different. Jerseys we understand all of. That
(51:11):
So i'm not saying that they're innocent in all of.
This but you have to be the one to be
able to tell, Yourself i'm only going to get this
jersey and live like. That you can't be frivolous with.
It BUT i JUST i can't FIND i can't find
any fault in getting excited over buying a new cap
Because i've loved. IT i love. IT i absolutely love
doing stuff like.
Speaker 3 (51:31):
You're forgetting about cancer awareness months as. Well the pink
pink Jersey's october that's another. One and, ALSO i mean
the THING i guess the team that doesn't have to
worry about that was The jets with their Throwback. Titans
nobody bought that.
Speaker 7 (51:43):
One so?
Speaker 3 (51:43):
Good did you rock that? One did you have to wear?
THAT i had to wear that on AND i liked,
it but nobody purchased. It so we know that.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
