Speaker 2 (00:26):
Look at the Blue Jays.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
And your pudgy little pal Kirk hitting bombs. This Blue
Jays team looks like they're in fuego, and I'm like,
wait a minute. In Seattle, the road teams are now
five and zero in the ALCS and NLCS, and you
got to ask yourself, like what does that even mean? Like,
how is it You can't say that it's home team's
(00:51):
pressing that much, or could you? No, I think that's
exactly what it is really to that level, it's a
home field disadvantage. That's the only thing I can come
up with, because I would see it when the Yankees
were in the postseason, Remember that, Yeah, I do. I
felt like they were gripping the bat a little tighter.
I know the fans are there cheering them on, but
(01:12):
that just adds to the pressure.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
And I know they're.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Professionals, but they're also really young men trying to do
their best. And when you're trying too hard, sometimes that's
when you're not playing at your best.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
I hit up my buddy Elias from the sports Bureau,
but I think he's on vacation in a Sinota in
Mexico somewhere.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
I mean, what else could it be.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
But I do wonder if in baseball history, how far
have we gone into this level, this tier of the
playoffs where the home team is winless. Meaning I can
only imagine if the Brewers win at Dodger Stadium tonight,
and I mean I know the two games today, but
even then, if it was if six and oh seven
(01:49):
and zer possibly today, if the road teams keep winning,
there's got to be something about that that's never been done. Yeah,
it seems like a switch went off all of a sudden.
The Blue Jays bats are alive again. Vladdie Grew remembered
how to hit And Yeah, I really do think it's
just a matter of that extra pressure on the biggest
scale possible, on the highest level possible. It's like that
(02:11):
kid who does really well and then when his parents
show up at the little league game. That's when he
strikes out because he knows they're watching. And it's that
little added pressure that you try to ignore but is
always there. Now, just to be real here and keep
it real, I'm looking at it.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
This year's baseball standings.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
I just think expectations are so high and fans nowadays,
you know, especially in New York. I keep going back
to my Yankees because I wish they were in the postseason.
If you're not producing and if you're not winning, you're
losing and you're getting booed. And I think these teams
show desperately want to win for their cities, especially teams
(02:55):
like the Brewers, teams like the Mariners, that the pressure
starts to add up because it means so much to
the fans.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
They've never won before. They're excited to be there.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
You know, they're gripping that bat tight, and it's definitely
subconsciously affecting them to a disadvantage. It's not home field advantage,
it's home field disadvantage. At least it's been so far.
All right, thirty teams in baseball now we love to
talk macros and micros, spout our video gress spot loves
to talk about his macros when he eats and at
the gym. That'll put you to sleep, I will, will
(03:28):
you need your proteins in your cover one hundreds. I'm
talking about the macro look at the season versus the
micro look. We're talking about five or seven game series.
It's hard to really say that that is played in
the same way as you look at one hundred and
sixty two game season.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
No, but would you believe be different?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Of thirty teams, three teams had a better road record,
And it goes exactly with what you're saying. Let me explain,
all the teams that perform better on the road have
no fans. The A's, the Marlins, and the washing Rington Nationals.
These are bottom feeders, meaning there's no pressure from the
home crowd because they stink.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
So when you look at the A's, who don't.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Even have a home, really the Marlins, who you go
to a Marlins game if they're playing the Mets or
Phillies or a division rival, the Braves, that more than
half that stadium is opposing fans.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Can I give you life pinalogy?
Speaker 1 (04:21):
And the national stink this year as well, So I
think over the long season home field advantages a thing,
probably also because you're sleeping in your own bed and
your home and you're comfy and cozy. But the reality is,
it's funny that the moments the teams that did better
on the road were all bad teams. I think it
just reminds the players of how big this moment is.
(04:43):
Everyone's on their feet, they have to come through. Everything matters.
We're all under a microscope in this moment and in
real life. I think, let's say relationships. You ever been
in a relationship when things are easy, breezy, and you
just grew up and you know everything's going good and
the relationship's easy, you're not trying hard to please anybody.
(05:06):
You ever try to save a relationship, and then you
start trying extra hard and everything goes wrong. It seems
like the more you try and the more you push,
the more you fall in your face. And that's what
happens in the batter's box. That's what happens at these games,
and that's the analogy of playing loose, right.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Playing loose is how you win, And if you're able.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
To slow down those clutch moments, that's when you're able
to step up. It's the theory that Jazz Chisholm tries
to explain. It didn't work for him obviously in the postseason,
but Well says the secret to his success this year
was playing seventy percent. Because when you're trying to play
one hundred percent and you're really trying to give it
your all, you're really tripping over your own feet because
you're trying too hard. So if you're playing loose and
(05:48):
you're playing at seventy percent and you're not feeling that
pressure and you got no worries, that's when you really
are at your best. I like to use the term
loosey goosey. Loosey goosey no, but you ever been there
in a relationship rich where the harder you try, Let's
say you're trying to win a girl's heartback, and everything
you do, the universe feels like it's working against you.
Five it's because you're trying too hard. It's unnatural at
(06:09):
that point.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
In twenty twenty three, the Road Team won eleven times.
That was the Texas Rangers, setting a record. And then
in twenty nineteen the World Series there the Road Team
won every game.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Remember I do remember that.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
I remember that clearly being like, wow, it is no
one could get the job done at home.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
So I think in the micro.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
We talk about this postseason not your favorite dirty jobs guy,
not Micro in the micro.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Shout out to Micro though he's a good dude.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
I think we talked about sabermetrics and analytics that all
goes away in a short series. You can rely on
that over one hundred and sixty two game schedule to work,
but in a small sample you got to go with
your gut and I think over the long haul, sleeping
in your own bed, being around your family, playing in
front of the home crowd will obviously be an advantage.
But I think in a series where high stakes and
(06:57):
high pressure, maybe it's not as sh s docking that
these teams are falling flat at home. Let me ask
you a question, of course, is a typical could be
on Rich rich question when you were a single man,
did you perform better at home or on the road?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
If you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
If the girl said come back to my place, or
you said no, no, come over my place, where do
you feel like you had your.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
You're talking about cooking right your kitchen? Yea, yeah, kidding?
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Where are you cooking in their kitchen because I could
always leave when I wanted to stop. Where do you
think you've had your Where do you think you've had
your best performances at home or on the road?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Like if you had a fun random fling with a.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Girl, if you say, hey, come over my place, would
they be more pressure she's coming over my place?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I gotta make sure.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I think it was more fun on the road unless
they had cats or something. All right, then they'd be
all on the way, what's going on here? How many
cats do you have?
Speaker 2 (07:58):
This is weird?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
More than three? She's crazy at the role they ever
go to a place and there He's like, it's like
a big mess too, Like what.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Kind of person? Are you? Not sick?
Speaker 1 (08:09):
So yeah, I think I was on the road performer
myself rich. So I think that's really what it is.
Except here's here's what's hard to believe. It's hard to
believe for us because you're like, they're professionals, so you
assume that they're oblivious to this. And baseball is also different.
So much pressure, but especially for the teams that never won.
(08:33):
I really feel like the Dodgers do have less pressure.
They won, They're the Dodgers. They have superstars. They know
that if one superstar doesn't step up, someone in that
lineup is gonna step up. You're saying, like Blue Jays
and Mariners. Fans blue Jays the Mariners like, there's.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Gotta do it.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
The fan bases are so thirsty and the players know it. Yes,
you know. I think Dan Bayer's Seahawks when I think
of the last time maybe a home field advantage meant
that much because home field advantage drewers Mariners. Listen, over
our lifetime football, baseball, basketball, there have been significant like yo,
(09:11):
home home field for that team means a lot. The
last one that to me was almost impossible was a
time in the twenty tens when if you went to
Seattle twelfth man legion of boom was that Dan By.
Would you agree the last time a home field meant
that much?
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yeah, darn near close, because I can't think of another
one that comes to mind.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Lambo in the nineties, maybe late nineties, early two thousand.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yeah, I mean, Packer fans are great, and there's there's many,
many of them, but an actual home field advantage of
affecting the game, I don't think lambeau Field is it.
But when you went to lumen Field, you went to
the Kingdome, even that those were those were the places
heck in baseball going way back, so it wouldn't even
(09:58):
be close to the to the Seahawks, how loud was
to play at the Homer Dome with the Twins and
those those Homer hankies and an indoor sort of facility.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You could picture that, right, You could picture all the head,
the wave in the towels and everything.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
And honestly, like as of late, just to go back
to the Seahawks, their issue has been they haven't actually
been good at home.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
We've been Yeah, so that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
It feels like there's not one now, Like for a
minute you were like the Chiefs that arrowhead. But if
you look at the last couple of years and they're splits,
it's not like it's not like anyone's undefeated at home,
and like, yeah, good luck.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Seeing them in January at home, Like and think how
we set up these expectations.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Blow just lost at home in a primetime game and you
thought they had the the those white uniforms at home
on aime.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, in the new unis no less. So yeah, yeah,
I added to it.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
But when you think about the expectations, not only from
the fans, you know, those players have even greater expectations,
Like they're supposed to win at home. Instead of just
playing the game and doing their best, we gotta win,
They're expected to win. It's a home game. And I
think all those things subconsciously mess with you and you
(11:06):
get the opposite result.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Remember that playoff game, that wild card game with the
Pirates and Reds, and the Pirates shook Johnny Quato so
much like cold dropped the ball in.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
His mint and like imploded on the mat.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah, that was in Pittsburgh. That was, you know, a
decade ago or so. That gets it's crazy. You don't
see it as much anymore.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
That was. Honestly, they'd be great reference because that was
the last time I remember seeing someone visibly shook. And
if you don't know why we're talking about this, he
just joined us. The home teams are zero to five
this postseason in the MLB. I don't know if that's
a first, but it sounds good to me. I don't
remember that being the case. So again, younger people, crazy atmospheres,
(11:47):
desperation to win, expectations to win greater than ever, I
think you're seeing a lot of people pressing too hard,
and that's why we're here. I'm trying to find the
stat on a Cavino. Maybe Dan Bayer knows or Danny Ja.
It's all subconscious too, though, Rich I found that. I
(12:08):
found it. It's also on the smallest level of the
Liukma theory. We call this the likma theory. And this
goes back to grade school. Seriously, how many times when
you were a kid, you're in your driveway and you're
just hitting three point shots. You're hitting circus shots off
the roof, on the pavement into the bucket. You're in
the zone, you're hitting all these ridiculous shots, and then
(12:30):
you're like mo Ma, watch, watch, and you try to
make that same shot again.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Brick brick, air brick air ball.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Wait wait wait wait wait, and then as soon as
she walks away, it's back to the bottom of the net.
And it's just the way life works sometimes. And these
are younger men with with you know, much greater rewards
at hand.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Here it's just human nature. Was it you Covino who
said you don't like it? When your family was in studio,
somebody had family serious exam.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
I don't like it, right, but I do feel their
nervous energy on me, Like my mom gets all nervous
and I could feel her being nervous for me, and
I don't want that. It's not that I don't want
my mom there, so I know she's nervous for me
for some weird reason. So it's like, you know, take
your nervous energy out of here. And that's all part
of it. Man, there's high stakes here. We analyze every
(13:19):
little thing. Social media adds to this. You know, they
didn't have to deal with that years ago, the social
media pressure in the backlash. Don't think these players, especially
the young players, don't see it, and their friends see
it and they talk about it. They have to go
home with it.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
It's a whole different level of pressure.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
It didn't really apply the same way years ago the
way it does right now.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
I was saying, what's up, buddy.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
I actually have exclusive audio of Covino trying to get
his mom's attention.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
I made it, No, I do it again, And then
was like, and then you missed a shot every time.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
That's what's happening.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
You're trying to perform at your peak in front of
these fans and it backfires. Not that Lebron James needs
me to hang from Huevos, but I'm going to for
a second. Sure, what was so remarkable about Lebron and
the Cavs beating the Warriors the year they went seventy
(14:18):
three and nine best record in NBA regular season history
was that I had to look it up. I don't
know why it took me more than ten seconds to
find it, but that twenty fifteen to twenty sixteen Golden
State Warriors team forty one home games.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
What do you think their home record was, I don't know.
Tell me thirty nine and two. Oh wow.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
So the fact that in the playoffs and the NBA
Finals down like they were, for Lebron James to find
ways to beat a team in the Bay Area when
they were thirty nine and two the whole season, only
two times had a forty one games did the Warriors
come up short at home that year? And I think
(15:00):
that also explains why some of these teams who have
the best records throughout the year end up falling short
because now they're expected to win and the pressure is
greater as a result.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
So I'll be honest, I'll pull a Fonsie. I might
have been wrong. I might have been wrong because.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Remember I said both series are two to oh and
they're going home. This is over, dude, right based on
last night and tonight. Postseason, it doesn't matter as much
if anything could be working against them regular season. Yeah,
and you know what, right now for the Brew crew
and Denny, I'm not saying to hope this for you
because you're a Dodgers guy, But would it shock you
(15:40):
if tonight, all of a sudden, Contreras and Yellich and
all these guys, the ball start dropping, they get a
little looser, and maybe they win tonight, maybe it's two
to one.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
That would that shock you?
Speaker 1 (15:52):
No, the one They're team that won ninety six games
this year's you know, they're they're gonna Something's gonna happen something,
And maybe they're like, all right now, we're just in
southern California. We're away from all all the fun of Milwaukee. Oh,
pressure's off. Yelich gets to go get a home cooked
meal from his mom in southern California.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Maybe this team brings it tonight.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
And I wouldn't be shocked if Blue Jay's tied up,
and I wouldn't be shocked. If the Brewers stole one
from the Dodgers tonight, and that would be what seven
seven to zero from the road teams.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Of that that would be well.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
And it seems so simple to say, but all these
teams are there for a reason. So you think any
of these teams are gonna wilt and just go away quickly,
you're wrong.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
No, they're all great teams, right, These are for reasons.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
These aren't weak ass teams that are like, oh, I
guess we're gonna fold.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
No ninety six win team's gonna fold.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
No Blue Jays team who beat out the Yankees for
the Al East is gonna fold. And it's not just
because it's zero to five so far. You could visibly
see that these teams were pressing at home and they
seem looser on the road. Yeah, I mean Blue Jays
for example, yesterday thirteen runs out of nowhere. They won
thirteen to four over the Mariners. Don't yawn in October
(17:01):
because when you yawn in October, yep, a ghost sticks
is junk in your face.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
That's exactly what happens.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
That's why that's why ti Oscar and his wife didn't
want to stay at that hotel.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Thankfully there hasn't been any mooring baseball game. And by
the way, if your kids or wife collect those stupid
boo buckets at McDonald's, they're doing them again next job
this year, next week. So I don't know that. I
just Halloween's here, man, you know October baseball. We're halfway.
We're halfway there, man. Pretty crazy. Two weeks from tomorrow Halloween,
(17:33):
which means this weekend you got to start looking for costumes.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Probably.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
In fact, we'll get your primed up and ready for
that on over promised our Bonus pod, premieres today, episode
one thirteen. In fact, we'll definitely talk Halloween and some
popular costumes to look out for, and some sports related
ones too, over promised on our YouTube page. Covino and
Rich FSR. We go live right after the show. That's
(17:58):
four pm on the West, seven pm on the Easy,
and I'm Steve Cavino.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
That is Rich.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
We got Danny g Sam Spot and Buyer hanging out
with us, and let's go to the phone calls real quick.
Let's say out to Tony and then I have an
NFL thought. As we get to Dan Bayer, what's up
Tony Hey, Tony Hey.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
Twenty nineteen, Like we said, the Nationals won, the Rangers
home team won off seven games, and then nineteen eighty
seven was the first time that the home team won
all seven games. That was in the Homer Dome. And
I won't just say real quick, and Dan Byer can
correct me on this, but I remember nineteen seventy eight
n LCS between the Phillies and the Dodgers. Pitcher for
(18:37):
the Dodgers, I think it was Charlie Huff literally was
booed off the mound and could not continue. That's going
back aways.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yeah, I mean, listen, Charlie Huff pitched one hundred years.
I mean, Charlie Huff, whatdy retire?
Speaker 2 (18:50):
Like last year? Guyot he was one hundred and twelve.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
I think when he was on the Rangers he was
one hundred and fifteen. As he outlived sister Jean, didn't
he Yeah, but he's still alive, I'm sure. But look,
you had to go way back to the eighties to
give us that stat and that's pre social media obviously.
I think that's also pre you know, we have this
idea as fans too, that they're professionals. But they're young men,
they're still human, and we know what they're getting paid,
(19:14):
and we know how much they're getting paid in this
ridiculous amounts, so we're quick to boo them and quick
to expect.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Greatness when that's not always going to be the case.
It's up dB.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
How would you guys take that? Would you guys take
that as like Dan Byer knows his sports, or Dan
Buyer's old that he may remember what happened in nineteen
seventy eight.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
I took a little, to be honest, I was. I
was at first. I was like, if it was like.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Dan Bayer, I remember it was nineteen eighty something when
you dip into the seventies. He's now saying, oh, dB
might be fifty.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
For the record, I'm not the oldest person on this show.
For the record, I'm not the oldest person on the show.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Grizzled veteran Dan Byer might pay back me up on this.
I'm I'm just saying.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
I look at what he was saying, and I think
it's the Alonso Morning meme of yeah, or the late
the girl the girl at the counter, Like, Oh, that's
really funny.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
So that's that's how I took that well.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
I was, by the way, I was one in nineteen
seventy eight, so I don't remember that World Series well,
but you're a.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Big Charlie Huff fan. I was Dan Byer, I was.
I was referencing the Woodrow Wilson administration. Do you have
any me talks about when President Taft got stuck at
a bathtub? By the way, Speaking of Charlie Huff, we
had Julian Huff on our show once and just randomly
were like, yo, grown up, Charlie Hoff any relations She's like, yeah,
he my.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Uncle, He's my uncle something like that.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Yeah, really Deredy uncle, or he's related to Charlie and
Derrecky Derek and Julian Huff.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
We randomly threw that out there, and I'm like, oh, crap,
you really are related.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Let's talk a little NFL. We'll go to dB for
an update.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yesterday, when we filled in for Dan Patrick, we talked
about how everyone from NFL on Fox to USA Today,
everyone has decided to put out their power rankings as
to where we are, like a third of the way
through the NFL season. USA Today has the Bucks and
Colts number one and two. Pro Football Talk has the
Bucks and Colts at one and two. NFL on Fox
(21:14):
has the Bucks at number one, Colts are on their
top five, and if you want to add to the list,
TB twelve himself, Tom Brady decided to chime in. He
has the Bucks and Colts at one and two. So
I ask you all hold on, though, hold on. You
were right USA Today, Pro Football Talk all had Bucks
and Tom Brady one and two, but NFL on Fox
(21:35):
left them off. Yeah, the didn't even have Colts in
the top five. Now they had the Bucks and Lions
at one and two. Packers, Lions, Rams are Brady's three
four five And if you want to just play stat
boy three four five for USA Today with Seahawks, Steelers, Lions,
Lions Rams, Steelers for Pro Football Talk, Rams, Packers, Bills
for NFL on Fox. But they had the Lions at
(21:56):
number two, so Lions seemed like someone we could all
get behind, like Lions.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Will you know? It was so rich.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
It was all the hype that Baker Mayfield and the
Buccaneers got this past weekend against your team because everybody's injured.
But I think what separated the Buccaneers is that Baker
Mayfield still found a way to win with all the
other players despite the injuries. My question, Covino, because all
of a sudden, everyone's swinging from Mayfield. My question for
(22:24):
not only Ukavina, but for everyone in the room and
everyone listening. When you think of power rankings, do we
interpret that as you genuinely feel like those are the
best teams, like in this moment, Like you think moving
forward to the best teams, like that's in the moment. Yeah,
Like I feel like power rankings is such an interesting thing.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Is Listen.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
When I was a kid, I don't know who the
first to do it was, but I remember always looking
up the power rankings to see where the Niners were.
And I'm sure you felt the same about the Raiders
and the Seahawks, like I would always look at the
power rankings as a kid with such like it's a
good place, Like it's better to be there than not today,
an up arrow or a down arrow, like power rankings
are the thing we put you know, I don't like
weird stock into But do you genuinely feel like the
(23:03):
Bucks and the cult of the two best teams in football.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
In a way? Yes, honestly, Like it's a tricky question.
Because I'm not saying I disagree with you.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
I'm sort of like, I mean, no way answer where
the Steelers stand tonight.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
The Buccaneers have answered the bell in a couple of
really tough situations, including in Seattle and getting that win
against the Seahawks. It's one of the better wins. In fact, Rich,
I would even argue that if the forty nine Ers
wouldn't have lost to the Buccaneers this past weekend, that
there would be an argument for what your Niners have
done so far, because when you would if you were
(23:40):
to win in Tampa, if you were to win in
Seattle and do what you did, that there'd be an
argument there. But I just I don't believe in what
the Eagles are right now. I think that the Bills
have many flaws, and I don't think we can reward
a team like the Chiefs, I big Denver to win
the Super Bowl. Are at four and two, but could
have lost to the Jets in London this past weekend.
So Ravens are not Yeah, well, the good teams, Like,
(24:01):
I'm not a believ we were a crown the Packers
the Super Bowl champions after Week two and now we're like, Wow,
you really couldn't put away a Joe Flacco led Bengals
team this past week.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
What's funny is Cavino and I we're joking about the
Packers earlier, how like the weirdest record because they had
the bye week and the tie week, So the Packers
are three to one and one, like.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
It feels like it doesn't belong.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
And the rest of the standings like other teams four
and two, five and one, one.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
And five, three to one and one. Yeah, and the
losses to the Browns, yeah, yeah, funky.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
It's interesting because the two teams to wrap this up
to two teams that arguably every outlet is saying are
one and two are both underdogs this week in the NFL, Well,
you too, underdogs.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Better figure out after Week seven wraps up next Monday,
who are the top teams? Because you've said, and you
extended last year on the radio, she said, by week seven,
we'll tell you who's who in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Fie weeks, I would say, I have one more week,
and you had this two very telling games based on
what Dan Byer and I were just discussing. Listen to this,
get this as Tony no Breaks would say this very
telling game out here in Los Angeles, the Chargers hosting
the Colts. Chargers are one and a half point favorites.
(25:18):
If the Colts convincingly beat the Chargers out here in LA,
that's to me, that's a stamp of they are real,
like real legit contenders. Now, if they come out here
and stumble, I don't think it's the end of the world.
It could be an l on the schedule that doesn't
destroy the Cults. But if you come out here and
beat the Chargers and moved to six and one, how
(25:39):
could you deny the Cults?
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Right?
Speaker 3 (25:40):
They played well last time they were at so far
against the RAM, you.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Know, deny them.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
And you can't deny the Buccaneers either, because how many
people like the Colin Cowherds of the world too, who
used to dump on Baker Mayfield had to look back
and say, you know what, I was wrong about that
because look how great they're playing now. I don't think
people were quick to give the Buccaneers or Mayfield any credit.
And he's undeniably leading that team, so you have to
(26:05):
give him the credit. Well, then you should love the
second part of what I just said, because Monday night,
another double doozy for Monday Night Football in a few
days from now. The first game, which starts right at
the end of our show, four pm, West Coast, seven
o'clock back East, Bucks at Lions. If that is not
the most telling game of the week, that's so good.
(26:26):
Box at Lions and Lions are five and a half
point favorites again an NFL on Fox. They're number one
and two Box and Lions according to the Power Rank.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
So Bucks and Lions.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
You're gonna say, what if Baker goes up to Detroit
and with again you know, some bang ups on that offense,
What if they go beat the Lions? That would really
make you think crap Buccaneers it for real?
Speaker 7 (26:48):
Yeah, the rich loves to look at the schedule, game.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
Chedule, watch it. That's what I do best. All right,
what's gonna Dan Buyer for an update?
Speaker 1 (26:56):
D me?
Speaker 2 (26:57):
What's going on? My friend?
Speaker 4 (26:58):
I would actually argue, because I love rankings in college football,
that you should have them in the NFL. How great
would it be to promote one versus two on Monday
Night Football?
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Right?
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Ultimately it's meaningless because we have a playoff at the
end that's determined by record. But if we actually did
incorporate power rankings. How great would it be to see
those matches? Hey, we got a three versus five match up.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
You know some teams would play with a chip on
their shoulder if they like if you're the kans City
Chiefs and Andy Reid mahomes, you.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
To think we're not even ranked. We're not even top
ten ranked.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
The problem DV is a network would have to sell
twenty five versus twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
Like, oh man, that only goes to certain parts of
Charlotte and then other places there? Yes, right, just four
out of the five boroughs in New York City, all right?
In Los Angeles, Brewers and Dodgers getting underway.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Hi, this is Jay.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
I'm the producer of the Paula and Tony Fusco show.
Usually in these promos they asked you to listen to
the show. I'm here to ask you please don't listen
to the show. The hosts are two absolute morons who
have the dumbest takes on sports imaginicable. Don't listen to
the show so it can get camp.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
What the hell are you doing in our studio? Get him, Paulie,
Ignore that fool.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Listen to the Pauline Tony Fusco Show on the iHeartRadio
app or wherever you get your podcast. He's still moving,
Covino and Rich live from the Fox Sports Radio studio.
Is time for our tire rack play of the day.
The Blue Jays found their bats in Seattle. Kirk blew
(28:37):
the game wide open.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
One one pitch.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Kirk gets in high and deep right field, racing back
road place hat defence, climbs the wall.
Speaker 6 (28:45):
It is gone.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
Make it a dozen for the blue Jays. We three
run homer from a Lajandro Kirk. You know your kids
say suck by the way.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
I bring that up because after that home run, my
five year old's on turns to me and goes, Dad,
the Mariner suck tonight. I go it sounds abrasive from
a little kid. I was like, yeah, yeah, they do, buddy,
that curse they do.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
That's courtesy of Blue Jay's Radio Network. Our tiract play
of the day, and look at the clock. We do
it every Thursday. Old School win fifty hits.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
There's a curtain, yea. What we gonna do is go
back back into time.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
Throwing it back for a Thursday. Old School went fifty
hits at fifty after CNR give you the time capsule
topic and we reminisce together.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Yeah, yeah, what is that time capsule topic today? Well,
today's October sixteenth, twenty twenty five, and you're on this
day boy. Rich Davis is also a pop radio host
on this joy, so he's always given on this day
information and little fun facts. I'll give you one that
(29:57):
does nothing to do with this and birthday shout outs.
Today was the day that Walt Disney and his brother
Roy decided to open a little cartoon studio, and I
think we know how that went. Well, if you're such
a Disney fan, will you show the kids the legend
of Sleepy Hollow Headless Horseman cran I told you, by
the way, and not to spoil it.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
But brom Bones did it? Brom Bones, did you spoiled it?
Speaker 1 (30:21):
I watch that with the kids if you watch Little
Giants and Mighty Ducks, because you've seen neither, which is
a crime. I do watch it by myself and O'Neil.
Next time my niece and nephew are over, I'll watch
Nice Sam alright, popcord with Sam. It's also National Boss's Day,
(30:42):
so now it's time to kiss your boss's Hey, thanks,
boss man, know one better than Scott and Don Scott
and Dogs. True Yeah, Julie Talbot the greatest boss I've
ever had. So anyway, guys, true story. Fox Sports Radio
has been a blessing for Caveno ow Wrich. So we're
very happy here and we do love our boss.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Hey, kissing ass or not.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
We really do work for great people because I've worked
for people that were not so great. I had a
boss when I first started radio that like, you want
extra shifts, right, I'm like, of course, I was a young,
hungry kid fill ins overnight's weekends whenever. You know what
earned me those fill in shifts? If I would cover
for him when he cheated on his wife. No, you're
not king like my wife. Cole's all with you at
(31:24):
the bar. I'm like, okay, ball, Actually, I think your
shift came with an alibi.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
That's no for real.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
I think our experience here is very relatable because you
work for a lot of places and they hire you,
but then they hire you and try to change what
you do. Right, Oh yeah, we like you. Now do
it our way. And you're like, well, I thought you
hired me because you like me. Now you're telling me
to do something else here at Fox Sports Radio. They
actually did hire us and let us do what we
(31:49):
do and what they hired us for. That's really refreshing.
But when you think of bosses and who do you
think comes to mind? Like I think, we have these
TV bosses that come to mind, movie bosses that come
to mind. The number one boss, Yeah, who comes up,
Big boss Man Lumberg. Yeah, you know what he, in
(32:09):
fact is on the graphic for National Bosses Day.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
I did that almost creation. Yeah, I made that.
Speaker 8 (32:16):
I'm also gonna need you to go ahead and come
in on Sunday too.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
Wow, he needs those TPS reports. Yeah, National Bosses Day.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Who do you think? Let's hear some boss stories.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
Let's think of the best bosses in TV movies, cartoons.
A few cartoon ones come to mind. But this is
where we get you involved. Fox Sports Radio Nation eight seven,
seven ninety nine on Fox Let's go. I hate to
say it, but maybe the last big start of his
illustrious career unless he keeps playing or they move on.
(32:53):
This is a big one for Mad Max. So if
you're a Max Schurzer fan, Max Scherzers forty one for
the record, and so is Aaron Rodgers and Flacco is
forty if you're keeping score at home. So props to
all the old guys, and we say old respectfully. Old
guys on the field, young guys in life. We're Covino
(33:13):
and Rich the youngest in the game, believe it or.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Not and perspectives everything. Yeah, Danny G is here.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
We got the old guy, Dan Bayer hanging out with us,
and of course the very old guy, and we got
Iowa sick.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
By your invented fantasy football.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
People don't realize he was, you know what up Him
and Matt Barry were in a back room one day.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
You know, I just know the Covino's older than me.
That's all that I know. That's all that I know.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
That that matters.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
That is true, all right, So thank you guys very
much for hanging out with us. Now before we talk
show hay Otani and more MLB show hey Otani. Every Thursday,
we throw it back and we do something called old
school in fifty hits and super producer Danny G reminded
us sent us a cool meme that today is National
Boss's Day, So that could be in sports managers, people
(34:05):
that come to mind for you could be in life.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Could be your story, real life fiction, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
It could be ones that just stand out. When you
think of boss, you think of.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Who Boss Hawk, Yeah, Boss Tweet, No like of Bruce Springsteen,
the Boss.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Can I tell you it's it's funny you haven't even
mentioned it on or off the area yet. In the
world of sports, rest in peace, the Boss George Steinbrenner
the most demanding eye roll. Ye, you know, I feel
like there was a time in our childhood where depending
on the conversation he had, he would hire and.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Fire Billy Martin and Lou Penela, back and forth.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Yeah, you know what, that might be the number one
answer on the board when it comes to sports bosses,
right show with his turtleneck. Well, doctor Jerry buss A
is a close one up there, doctor the late doctor
buss as well. But Steinbrenner was, Yeah, he'd fire you.
You had to do it his way. He had an expectation.
He was very trump like in the way he managed
(34:57):
his team and the way he commanded spec And I
always found the funny that Larry David flew out. I
heard this on I believe Rich Eisen he flew Steinbrenner
out to film the scenes for seinfeldt because remember George
Steinbrenner was on seinfeld Remember George Steinbrenner was just not
(35:19):
a good actor, and he had to then break it
to Steinbrenner like, I'm not gonna use your You're on
the show, but I'm not gonna use your voice, and
he was, Yeah, so that the back of Steinbrenner's head
was actually Steinbrenner.
Speaker 5 (35:34):
No, it was Larry David by the voice of Larry David,
but he always showed him from behind.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
He had come in to do some voice and voice
working stuff for the Steinbrenner roll, and Larry's like, yeah,
just he's greated a lot of things. Acting wasn't one
of them, which is which is wild?
Speaker 2 (35:49):
One of them?
Speaker 1 (35:50):
Cal Zones, National Boss's Day. Got a few stories and
a few people that come to mind for me, Danny
j anyone else in that conversation with doctor Buss and
George Steinbrener, Is there a trifector? Is there a third
like really polarizing winning like Al Davis, Oh, of course
I gotta go to you for that one out. Oh yeah,
even making that movie right now with Madden and Davis.
(36:11):
I mean it's not professional sports, but it kind of is.
Vince McMahon's in there. No, I would say it has
to be. In the conversation.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Vince, I was on the phone. Did you guys say
Jerry Jones, Oh, Jerry Jerry.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
By the way, we just named I think the list
of Jerry Jones, Al Davis, Vince McMahon, George Steinbrenner, and
doctor Buss. That's your top five in sports entertainment, right,
I mean I have to in the world of cartoons, honestly,
because this comes to mind.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
When you think of bosses, you don't think of.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Mister Slate or mister Spacey of Spaceley Sprockets, like you
don't think of those guys from Hannah Barbara Jacks. Yeah,
Oh of course I think of the Hannah Barbara boss.
As you think of how pumped Fred was to get
out of work. You think of George Jets and how
(37:06):
you know how his boss is yelling at him all
the time.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Hey, Sam, do your best, mister Spacely, it's the you're fired.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
With a little I'm not. I really don't know this
character very well. I've never I've never done a mister
space Let me listen to this one real quick.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
All right, here we go. I'll give you my.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
So you know cartoons, some big stories, big head, really
quick cove because co has been watching this, uh he's
watched it three times probably the past two weeks.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Boss Baby, Yeah, kids love that. Boss Baby is fantastic.
That is a good one.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
So I've worked for some demanding people, very demanding people
in my career, and a few stories come to mind.
One of my first radio bosses, like, you said, Rich,
you had to do certain things to get that airtime. Yeah,
I tell you boy, old radio boss said you want airtime.
You're my cover story for when I cheated my wife.
I'm like, as a young man, I'm like, what the
thing is, we've all done stuff like that, right in
(38:08):
a generation?
Speaker 2 (38:08):
You can't because they'll like try to sue you or something.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
He would say things like you could fill in afternoon drive,
but Tuesday night you and I were at the movies
and having a drink.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
I'm like, sure it was before HR departments, Yeah, before
all that, right, I think there were no training videos,
nothing like that.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
I would do all sorts of personal things and personal
errands for my boss. If he needed me to pick
up his suits, I would do that. I needed to
go buy presents for you know, his kids, I would
do that. I remember one time I had to clear
out his whole attic because he was moving, so that
was his personal mover. Like we did all sorts of
stuff like that just to get ahead in life and
to get that opportunity. But there was one time I
(38:46):
was working in radio promotions. Is a true story, and
it's a legendary story if you followed us for years.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
It was at.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Metallica Tattoo the Earth or yeah, I think it was
a Metallica Tattoo Earth festival or like an os Fest show.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Yeah, And it was a very metal show.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
And these metal fans didn't like commercial rock radio.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
They liked all underground college radio, right, And one dude.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
Stepped on our promotional vehicle, got up on it and
got everyone cheering. He was shaking the van back and forth,
and I'm there like I'm the station representative, and the
guy did the guy.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
How do I say this? Number two?
Speaker 1 (39:27):
There was a number two on our vehicle and I'm like,
oh my goodness, and the boss made.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
Me clean it up, clean it up, yeah, yeah exactly.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
So Like not only was I offended, but then I
had to do that humiliated in front of everybody, so
I'll never forget it. Geez.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
If he was around nowadays, he'd tell you, I'm gonna
call Ice on you.
Speaker 7 (39:50):
Yo.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Yeah right, So can I tell you you really you
paid your dues, paid my dues.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
We all did, though it was a different time and
I know the stories yet even worse the further you
go back. But the bosses in TV and life, I
think mister Angelino I believe was his name from Jack Spistrow.
Remember he used to work for mister Angelino Felipe. He
was tough on jazz. Yeah, he's coming to start yelling
(40:17):
at Jack all the time.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
But we mentioned it earlier.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Grees Company, Lumberg, you might be your number one TV
or movie answer.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
We have sort of a problem here.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Yeah, you apparently didn't put one of the new cover
sheets on your TPS reports.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
It's funny because that's a cult classic, yet probably the
number one answer when it comes to bosses in TV
and entertainment. I don't know if I'm just saying this
answer because of my sports fandom, but is it general
knowledge that before Steve Cohen bought the Mets, the will
Ponds were the worst owners, like worst bosses? Like is
(40:52):
that a sentiment that non New Yorkers?
Speaker 2 (40:54):
Now? Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 1 (40:55):
With the money they got caught up in the schemes
and the burning made off and didn't want to spend money.
Snyder of the Redskins now Commander's terrible boss. By the way,
Bill Lumberg from the movie Office Space is played by
Gary Cole. And side note, I've seen him at the
CBS right across the street up from over here, like recently.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
Really yeah, if you could just go ahead and make
sure you'd do that from now on, that would be great.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
I'm like, there is Lumberg. I'm in line with Lumberg. Rich.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
How about the horrible owner the Dodgers had here in
southern California, Frank McCourt remember that, And I think he
still owns a piece of the parking lot and he
went through a bad divorce and that was messy before
Magic Johnson and that big group took over.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
Did you guys watch the hull Clippers documentary about Donald Starler.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (41:42):
Yeah, And I'm asking you a question, since this boss's day,
is it a total kiss sass move to buy your
boss a gift for let's say the holidays or something.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Do people still do that? Is that just the kind gestion? Holidays? Cool? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (41:57):
I saw a Hallmark pop up for today, though to
get them a boss's National.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
Boss Day gift? Is that kiss? I would say that's
a little over the top.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
But aren't you like the kid that brings the teacher
a gift like the kid that brings her an apple?
Speaker 2 (42:09):
No, but the same way.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
I know your guys' favorite team, so I give you
gifts based on your teams. I've done that with our
boss before. I give them like Minnesota gear.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
I haven't done that in the years.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Maybe we should, right, I said the boss something I
said from Rich and then in parentheses not so when
contract time comes up Christmas.
Speaker 3 (42:26):
Christmas is cool, but if you're doing more than that,
you're probably just trying to do too much.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
Here's here's why there's a true not the true story.
Danny g had a boss. Rich knows them. This is
before you and I worked together, though, But we ended
up working for this guy again, Rich and I and
I bought him one of those like like penholders from
things engraved or they got sharper image. But I had
it engraved and it was like, you know, boss man Mcker,
so you know, it's just his cool pen in it.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Because it's my boss.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
I thought it was a cool, thoughtful thing to do,
and like the reaction I got wasn't like what I expected.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
So I was like, yeah, never doing that again.
Speaker 1 (43:04):
Oh you know, it was a great kind gesture, Give
me a hug or something, the best thing of boss ever.
Like deflated, feeling like, yeah, maybe I shouldn't have done that.
Then one time, when you're on your come up, I
remember saying a boss once said to.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
You, like, I don't pay you to think.
Speaker 1 (43:19):
Yeah he did, you know, Boss said to me, I
don't pay you to think. We already have a Howard
Stern here. Just just hang up those batters. Read the liners, buddy,
read the liners.
Speaker 3 (43:30):
So I had a radio boss steal from me one time.
What Yeah, Now I know they have an affiliate in
their city too, so I have to be careful. And
I've programmed several stations, so it could be any of
those cities. But so we you guys know, in our
business there's this thing called trade where there's certain companies
that the radio station wants to do business, but instead
of money, they trade services. So all of us full timers.
(43:53):
We got an email saying, Hey, this awesome auto parts
West Coast shop. They're gonna hook all the full time
town up with rims for their cars. Make an appointment,
go in pick your rims. I'm so excited. I take
my car. I'm like, I pick the rims, make an
appointment for when I was going to go get them on.
Then I got to follow up email from the boss saying, hey, guys,
(44:13):
I'm so sorry we're not going to finish this trade
with this company. And I'm like, dang it, I missed
out on my rims. I'm not kidding you. Two weeks later,
he rolls up his car, has my rims that I
picked up on his car.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
That says so. It says it, Danny g It says,
here you already you picked up your rims.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
And I just I did my bad. I didn't obviously
didn't say anything about it, and I just try to
ignore it. But every time I saw his car, it
was like like a stake through the heart.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
Wasn't dinkled the boss in who movie? Was that Elf? Elf?
Speaker 6 (44:46):
Right? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (44:47):
He was the boss in elf? That comes to mind,
So call me elf one more time. Yeah, exactly. Elf.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
We're going to go to your phone calls now, who
comes to mind, Sports, Life, Entertainment. Do you have any
stories you want to share? His National Bosses Day here
on the Cavino and Rich Show. Let's say hi to
Willie in Anchorage.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
What's up? Willie? Hey? Willy Hey?
Speaker 9 (45:07):
We go on, guys, what's up? First boss that comes
to mind as Michael Scott.
Speaker 6 (45:11):
Everybody knows that, dude.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
I mean no, God, please, no, no, no. You know.
What's crazy too, is how he got better with age.
He really did.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
On the On the Morning on the Morning Show. He
looks way handsome. Do you ever see season one, Season
one versus the end his hairline and everything?
Speaker 2 (45:30):
No, no, it's great.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
If you watched the early episodes he was baldover slicking, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
And then his hairline became more robust. Yeah, he got.
He got the Halloween. He's such a good character though.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
Alex Alice Cooper is Steve Carell's dad. Look it up,
Alice Cooper is Steve Carell's dad. If you put some
eyeliner on Steve Carell Alice Cooper for Halloween easily. By
the way, the Michael Scott clips looking back at how
politically incorrect and wrong he was for some of those
like like I guess you would say, like the seminars
(46:01):
and the racial sensitivity that some of those clips.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
I don't think we fly today unless a streaming or.
Speaker 5 (46:08):
When when when they out all out Oscar and he's like,
I'm gonna kiss him in front of remember that house.
That's one of the funniest moments in the Office's history.
Let's go to Meg in Montana.
Speaker 10 (46:18):
Hi, Meg, Hi, Meg, Hey guys, how are you well.
I just couldn't get over the George Steinberner talk from Seinfeld.
I'm a huge seinfeld nerd and I could not help
but give you guys a little anecdote. Lee Bear is
the actor that played the physical back of the head
(46:43):
of George Steinbrenner, and he did all the yu yunk
yunk motions while Larry David was doing the voicing.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
Yeah, if that makes sense, Meg, you're because I was like,
that's not Larry David, but it's not George George Steinbrenner's
back either, Like it does look like he's a little
too big, I think, but I know Larry David And
I said, rich eyes in her pals and I feel
like I heard the clip where Larry does say how
I wanted to get George and involved but it didn't
work out. It's like that must have been a rough
(47:13):
conversation even for Larry David. But thanks better at the
awkward than Larry David. Yeah, and thank you for the
real sexy, I mean, informative phone call.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
We appreciate that. Meg. If you are on Love is Blind,
I would definitely want to meet you.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
Speaking speaking of voiceovers, and you guys have done his
voice on the show before, mister Burns.
Speaker 1 (47:29):
Oh yeah, well, good kid boss reference. All right, who
else do we got? Who comes to mind? Who's that
quintessential boss that comes to mind on National Bosses?
Speaker 8 (47:38):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (47:38):
You know the hottest bosses? That uh so in appropriate?
Jennifer Addison in Horrible Bosses. That's a good one. That
is a good Remember she's like.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
Trying to seduce Charlie Day and he's just and Bateman
And for that matter, I think everyone right, Well, you
know what, not only does it make you think of
those pop culture references, but it makes you think of
all the people you worked for and for what it's worth,
even the ones I complained about, I learned a lot
from man. I really did, and I was like, you
know what, nothing could be as difficult as like the
(48:06):
It felt very much.
Speaker 2 (48:07):
You ever see the movie Double Wars product I have?
That's a good boss. I worked for a guy, a
guy that treated me just like that.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
And you wonder like, are they pushing you because they're
a holes or are they pushing you to really truly
bring out the best in you. It's kind of like
the movie Whiplash. I always thought that you ever see
Whiplash with JK. Simmons, Like was he the worst guy ever?
Or was he really trying to bring out the best
in what's that actor's name?
Speaker 6 (48:34):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (48:34):
Come on, young studley guy?
Speaker 2 (48:37):
What's his name? You know I'm talking about j K.
Simmons and Miles Heller. There you go.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
So when I look back at all those bosses, yeah,
I did learn a lot from them. One of my
bosses had a sign on his desk is said it
can be done, and no matter what I did, and
I came there with a problem, he would point out
that thing and he didn't care what I had to
do to get it done.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
Get it done.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
And I think those lessons stick with you, and you know,
props to them all along the way.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
Yeah, being a boss is kind of like having a
superpower in a way, because some people just don't know
how to handle that responsibility and they abuse it. And
we've all had bosses like that, and I think you
guys would agree in general, your life is so much
better when you have a good boss.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
It is true.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
And if you want to tie into sports, because we
are Fox Sports Radio, there are some bosses that aren't
capable being the main boss, a llah the head coach.
There are people that are better defensive coordinators, right hitting
coaches all you know OC's or bench coaches, and you
see it and.
Speaker 2 (49:41):
You were you're it's probably it probably feels lonely at times.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
You were using the Devilwaar's Prada analogy and whiplash. There
are some bosses and I talk about this with my
wife all the time. As far as teachers and coaches,
kids all respond differently, But you got to figure out
what works for you and your kids or employees. Some
people need tough love and some people trumble.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
It's true.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
I noticed it when I coach, like there are kids
that are unfocused and if I try to be a
little tough on him, they listen. But then other kids
will be tough on him. They just crawl into a ball.
You know, they're a boss for a reason, right. They
might have the ability and skill set to know what
that employee needs to get them motivated. For all, I know,
this guy saw me as a pampered mama's boy, and
(50:26):
he's like, I got to toughen this kid up if
he wants to make it. Well, look, look who is
no longer batting one forty show? Hey Tani with a
leadoff triple in the bottom of the first INNY Oh
he's whopping? What one's sixty five? Help me, coach?
Speaker 5 (50:40):
Was that boss the same guy who said that don't
don't use your brain?
Speaker 2 (50:43):
Or is it just difference? It actually was?
Speaker 5 (50:45):
Yeah, okay, yeah, see I don't like that as advice
don't use your brain. I mean I kind of I
get what he's saying, like, just follow orders, just do
what I tell you.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
Pay to think, ye don't pay to think? Yeah it
was the same guy, same guy.
Speaker 1 (50:56):
All right. You know, I don't know some radio some
radio tyrants out there, but you learn your lessons, man,
You move on.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
Joe Tory, right, look at it.
Speaker 1 (51:04):
Joe Tory, who was so dominant as the Yankee skipper,
but everywhere else he was not good right, true, and
Joe Torrey was the most chill, laid back type of guy.
Compare that to other managers you've seen, like a in
your Yankee fandom, like a Panela or Billy Martin or
you know, it's everyone's different. It's true, respond differently. By
(51:26):
the way, the I don't want to take Dan Buyers thunder,
but Dodgers up one. Oh, Mookie Betts just had a gapper.
So back to back hits to start the bottom of
the first and Mookie Betts doesn't exaggerated dance at second
he's really rubbing it in.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
He didn't. He didn't even do the hip flex he
did like a whole number. He was like, no, you neither.
Speaker 1 (51:48):
And again back to sports, you know, Dave Roberts, he
gets a lot of criticism, but he might be steady,
the right guy for those characters, you know, and he
proved he was last year and maybe this year.
Speaker 2 (51:59):
You could argue.
Speaker 1 (52:00):
That's why you could argue that's why Rex Ryan hasn't
got a gig since because maybe his style is like, no,
I know, these young kids are not going to respond
to you when I say, boss, who do you think of? Seriously,
because then what if I said, hello, both you think
about baby ball? Hey, speaking of Howard Stern, I worked
(52:23):
at the same radio station as him.
Speaker 2 (52:26):
True story.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Our main boss said to me one time I did
such a great job that I was gonna going to
get a bonus. And people who follow that show know
who I'm talking about. So I was so pumped because
I was a young man on the on the come
up and I was like, I'm getting a bonus. So
telling all my friends I'm getting a bonus. The boss said,
I'm getting a bonus. M no, no, but along the
(52:49):
seam lines right after, Yeah, and I got my bonus
in Princeton Ski Shop gift certificates and it was like
here's I got was like, oh cash, I got a
and it was like three, like ten dollars gift boss.
If that's the case, then Clark Griswold's boss for giving
him the Jelly of the Month cup.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
He needed a bonus for his pool.
Speaker 1 (53:10):
And then but you know the humiliation, like at my
girlfriend at the time, my parents like, did you get
your bonus?
Speaker 2 (53:16):
Like, yeah, he's it. I got my bonus. Here's some
snowpants Jason and Maryland. What's up, Jason. Let's go rapid Fire.
Let's go. What's up, Jason?
Speaker 6 (53:25):
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (53:26):
I'm take it back to the nineties. I used to
be terrified.
Speaker 9 (53:30):
The younger name was BP Richfield, the boss from the
Dinosaur Muppet Giant.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
They used to come on back in the day.
Speaker 1 (53:39):
I was always portrayed as a scary, angry person, our
buddy stuck in Vegas.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
What's up, stew We're.
Speaker 6 (53:45):
Doing I'm old, so I'm gonna go.
Speaker 9 (53:48):
Lou Grant and my wife used I used to work
for a football team and my boss told me one
day he wanted to do the world's largest condom pole
at halftime, and he said, find me someone to make
a fisty foot condom.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
It can be done. It can be done. Promotional idea
that Lou Grant. By the way, Mary Tyler Moore show,
we see what was he judged dam ruld though that
did you know who am I thinking of? We're talking
at old TV.
Speaker 4 (54:16):
Maybe you're talking Lou Grant. Is that what you said?
I thought you said, Lou Graham, Yeah, but uh sorry,
I had.
Speaker 2 (54:25):
The baseball game. Ted Knight, let's go to Matt and Penn.
Speaker 9 (54:30):
What's up, Matt, Hey, guys, the boss of was I
was thinking that was just taking Lou Grant, So I
guess that dates me as being an old part. I'm
just gonna leave it with this.
Speaker 6 (54:41):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (54:42):
Jim Carrey just signed on the play George Jenson's George Jetsons.
Speaker 2 (54:47):
Is that true?
Speaker 1 (54:47):
By the way, Is that true or just a dumb
thing I saw because I thought the same thing.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
But I don't hear anything. I saw it on a
reputable website.
Speaker 1 (54:54):
I've seen this everywhere, and I think that's a great casting.
But I have a theory that a lot of if
you're a white guy, a lot of your dads look
like George Jetson, Rich's dad. If they should cast Rich's
dad as George Shetson, and.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
He would be perfect, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
I don't my boy el Roy Wain. Now you say
there's a sentiment around Shohil Tani, I say, there's just
straight up stats that prove when it comes to postseason,
he's kind of cheeks but he gets away with it.
(55:29):
And I know there's plenty of reasons as to why,
but the stats don't lie. Two hundred lifetime not counting today.
He was batt in one forty seven leading into today's
postseason game. Hasn't really come through that clutch that big
for your Dodgers. But I think it all goes back
to one thing that we tend to forget. Shoe Hey
did something that no one had ever done before. He
(55:51):
deferred his payments what two million a year, which allowed
the Dodgers to get the other players to back him up.
And they've been coming through. So when your team around
you delivers and they're not relying just on show Hay
and one person to come through, Yeah, he gets away
with it. And they wouldn't have those players if it
wasn't for that move he made taking less money at
(56:12):
the time. Well, so I heard Colin say this the
other day, and I think these Dodger teams aren't winning
just because they have the high payroll in big stars.
Speaker 2 (56:21):
Yes, pitching has shown that so far.
Speaker 1 (56:23):
You got Blake Snell and free agency had the money
to sign Yamamoto and you knew he wanted to come
play with show Hey, which by the way, shows his
worth in another way. Right, other Japanese stars wanted to
play with show Hey. But it's guys like Tommy Edmund.
It's it's guys that were on other teams that anyone
could have had. Remember we talked about how anyone in
the NFL could have had Baker Mayfield if they really wanted.
(56:45):
Anyone could have had Tommy Edmund, anyone could have had
tay Oscar Hernandez. These are guys that I mean, Snell
was up for Grass, went to Dodgers. Expensive but still
but I'm saying those guys from the scrap heaps. Munsey
was trash, Barbsara, no one wanted Max Muncie. These are
guys that went to the Dodgers and fit in with
the stars and have become big postseason players. And much
(57:06):
like that school project Cavino, we've talked about how you
might not be the person that contributes, but if you
get an A everyone gets to ay, not just the person
that does the best. And the Dodgers are defending world champs.
Show hey may have not have had the numbers, but
you know what, he's part of that squad, and if
you win, it gets forgotten.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
That's the thing.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
And there are moments not necessarily fair though, because what
was the biggest criticism for Aaron Judge that he wasn't
coming through in the postseason. Well, Covini, he's a ghost
in the postseason. Wres his big moment. Why not at
least a little bit of that narrative. He's the biggest
international star in the game.
Speaker 3 (57:41):
You've been hearing it the past couple of weeks. Rob
Parker's just screaming about it for over a week.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
Now.
Speaker 3 (57:46):
It's starting, but he's pitching, He's contributing in other ways.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
And Cavino, besides that, if you win, this is all forgotten.
If the Yankees had won a World Series while Aaron
Judge betted you know, two to eight in the postseason,
it wouldn't have been a big deal. There have been
plenty of teams where a star player, you know, poops
the bet in the postseason and no one really seems
to care because the team wins. The Dodgers are winning,
(58:15):
and there are moments where, even though he's not contributing,
his pure presence has felt meaning.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
The other night, he'd say that about Aaron Judge. The
other night was just as much flack.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
They weren't pitching around Aaron Judge. It's just that other
people weren't backing them up. The other night, Mookie Bets
got walked at the bases juiced. Why would the basses
juice because they did not want to pitch to show
hal Tony And that same stuff applied to Aaron Judge.
It's just do we see two different narratives. I'm actually
tipping my hat to the fact that Aaron that Shohy
was able to surround himself with greater players because of
(58:46):
that deferred move he made as far as money, because
you would not have those players.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
They would not be.
Speaker 1 (58:51):
Able to afford all these players if it wasn't for
that move of taking it was two million a year,
right of taking that two million a year.
Speaker 3 (58:57):
There are no Dodgers on the top ten for highest
paid salaries for next season. It's crazy. The list is Soto, Wheeler, Guerrero,
Junior Judge, Bregman, Rendon, de Gram, Trout, Cole Gray. Those
are the top salaries for next season.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
You can also say it's the way that show he
carries himself too. You know, he's just not an easy
target like that. He's a really likable guy and you
know how great he is, so you really don't want
to it doesn't matter when he bats one forty eleven.
Speaker 2 (59:25):
But the stats don't lie, they don't lie.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
But like rich said, there's a lot of forgiveness given
after you get that ring, because Aaron Judge could literally
flip off all those critics with a big ring on
his finger if he had won one.
Speaker 1 (59:35):
Yeah, and by the way, Bowers tie in the game,
and you know, in fact, let's let's go to dB,
who's probably happy about this reach.
Speaker 2 (59:44):
You know, thanks guys, Dan Byer here.
Speaker 4 (59:47):
Jake Bauers RBI single scored, Caleb Durban who had a triple,
Key k Rnandez probably shouldn't have dough for the ball
in left field.
Speaker 1 (59:57):
And tomorrow Rich Rich's big TV Game of the Week,
our fun new game Brainwave, giving away some prizes and
we get you ready for the weekend with weekend Hobnobbin
right here on Covino and Rich and Richie still got
to give us to your Thursday night picks. But real quick,
right quick, I got to say that we learned this
last year what the Dodgers did with Shoho Tani worked,
(01:00:20):
but we're noticing it in a different way this year.
When you see that he's batting one forty seven minus
the triple he hit tonight, this entire postseason, and the
money they were able to use by him deferring his
payments is working as they distribute it elsewhere to get
other players to pick them up. So the Dodgers have
a solid team, and what they did with Shoho Tani works.
(01:00:44):
I agree with that he gets no criticism. I agree,
but don't because this no salary cap in baseball, so
it's not like he's pulling the Tom Brady where it's like,
spend the money elsewhere does unlimited spending? Again, Dodgers able
to know who's so much that money so in such
a better way instead of paying him a crazy amount.
Speaker 2 (01:01:01):
Of I get what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (01:01:01):
You don't want to you want to avoid luxury taxes
and all these other things.
Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
But there's no salary cap.
Speaker 1 (01:01:06):
So I don't think show Hayes being the most like,
oh my god, team guy, you get the most money
as you can in baseball. I just think that the
Dodgers are covering for show Hey when he doesn't deliver.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
Covering with the players that they were able to get
because of that money.
Speaker 1 (01:01:18):
But these guys, I said, it's guys like that would
be like Judge being covered by a guy like Vulpi
or Austin Wells or one of these guys actually playing
well where Tommy Edmond And in that case, you know,
the criticism should have never been on Judge then because
he batted over five hundred, I sho hay one forty seven.
(01:01:39):
Seriously put that in perspective. Think of the criticism Judge got.
He batted five hundred and carried that team show. Hey
gets no criticism, he's betting one forty seven. What's criticizing
Judge anymore? You're making as much sense as Joe on
Love is Blind?
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
Right now? Sure about that? Do you watch you Love
His Blind? Monzi? Sure about that? Guy? Joe is the
biggest He's really sure about that?
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
Or did he really just want to shoehorn that into
this conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
I so I was happy listening to you guys because
I'm prepping to anchor, but he wanted to talk about
Love is Blind? Yeah, but Joe, Joe says some crazy things.
Speaker 1 (01:02:09):
Guy I've ever seen I you know him and that
girl with the hurt him and the woman that owns
a hair salon who has the worst hair, who has.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
Okay, I wasn't gonna say that, but it's no facts. Facts, facts,
he's not wrong. You, I just I'm all caught it.
Speaker 1 (01:02:21):
I'm glad, I'm glad we all are on the same
page that there's so many great sports.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
But when that's done and you're laying in bed, we're
watching Love His Blue. Yeah, we can watch. We can
all agree on that. All right.
Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
Well, hey tonight, here's the bet you're gonna make. I'm
gonna win you some more money. We finally lost and
we jinked ourselves. What will be nine and one now
on Thursday and Monday night teaser bets?
Speaker 2 (01:02:38):
Yeah, you've thought about your pick too hard last week?
Speaker 6 (01:02:41):
Did I did?
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
All right?
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
Well, here's what we're gonna do tonight. I think Aaron
Rodgers is going to continue to show the National Football
League that like, we were all wrong, and he's still
got enough juice and that team is good around him,
and everyone else thinks that the Steelers have somehow found
a way to keep that team together. They are four
yarn one right coming off of bye, and you got
Aaron Rodgers. There's six point favorites. Tease that down to nothing,
(01:03:06):
nothing many. You just need the Steelers to beat Flacco
and the Bengals. Not then, not the easy breezy. Here's
why I want get it. I don't want to overthink it.
The over Unders forty four and a half. You could say, mmm,
go down to thirty eight and a half and picked
the over. I'm not gonna do that, though. I this
could be low scoring. I'm gonna go under fifty and
(01:03:29):
a half, under fifty and a half and Pittsburgh Steelers
just win. That's your teaser. So under fifty and a half.
You know, I'm thinking twenty four to ten. Twenty four
seventeen still wins. That bet Steelers and the Unders in
a teaser.
Speaker 2 (01:03:46):
There you go. It'll be fun. Yeah, fun to watch
the old guys do their thing tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
And I'd like to see Blue Jays tie this bad
boy up tonight. And Danny, no offense to you, because
my kids now love the Dodgers. It would be nice
to make this a series. You really want to sweep
and sit around for a week? Come on, is that
any fun?
Speaker 7 (01:04:03):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Any fund would now enjoy your games tonight? Guess stop
giving me extra anxiety.
Speaker 1 (01:04:08):
Yeah, we'll see you guys later. Riba there any over
promised land, Let's go
