Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Good evening everyone, that's
We're coming to you live from the Fox Sports Radio
studios and it's all brought to you by Geico. Fifteen
minutes can save you fifteen percent more in current church
VisiC ico dot com for free ray quote Aaron Torres,
Arnie Spaniard And with one fifteen left in the game,
(00:24):
or at least in regulation, Clemson thirty three, Notre Dame
twenties first and ten for the Irish. This has been
a good one, Torres, unbelievable, great game. Notre Dame comes out,
plays about as well as you can. Clemson's kicking the
ball all over the field. Uh and then Clemson most
of the second half has looked like the number one
(00:45):
team in the country. But I'll tell you this, win
or lose, we'll have fenty to talk about. Well, we'll
have plenty of talk about Notre Dame. To me, you know,
we've been asking every week, Arnie, who's number four, who's
number four? Who's behind Bama, Clemson, Ohio State. Notre Dame
looks like they belong. They look like the same kind
of caliber of team. I know. There's no Trevor Lawrence
(01:05):
I'm just saying they're playing hard, they're playing good defense.
They look like a really solid club, and they make
a big play, they're gonna have it first in goal.
I think right around the inside the five yard line.
I'll have to double check on that. Oh my goodness,
thank you, Joe Buck's job is not in jeopardy. That
was huge already. You gotta I need some more enthusiasm
of fifty yards down the field into the red zone already,
(01:26):
come on, man. Yeah, so you know, I can't do
the play by play, but we'll keep we'll see if
it will see if he gets something. By the way, Um,
I didn't know, and maybe I shouldn't be embarrassed. I
should have known this. I didn't know. Debo Sweeney was
head coach of Clemson and an official. Did you see
that when it was past interference? And he gets no, no, no,
(01:49):
it wasn't that. They just picked up the flag. That's okay,
you're right it. I guess it's not gonna be passive inference.
I'm like, oh my goodness, how could you do that?
How do you throw the flag? And they go, yeah, okay,
but you're right, well, but we'll pick it. I didn't
know Dabbo was a part official. Also, what that's gotta
be a little bit of a conflict of it. Just
I'm guessing there, and believe you don't think the average
fans are not gonna be talking about that either. So
(02:11):
I was already in studio, go ahead and explained it
was there an explanation from the TV crew why it
was third and seven. They drew the flag on pass interference. Um,
they picked it up, which made it fourth and seven.
They didn't get the first. Now, of course they ended
up getting the ball back, but that's really beside the point.
They picked it up because Dabos we need said no, no, no, no,
(02:32):
it wasn't pass interfere And so what did you expect
him to do? Now when you looked at it again,
it was a bang bang play. And if you slow
it to the slowest of the slow slow SloMo and
to the to the last second millimeter, he might have
got their fraction second. But the probably should have been
a no call, and and I would have been okay
with it. But you know, pick it up just because
(02:52):
the coach says it was a no guy, I don't
understand that. You know, you know what other play if
you slow it down to the second, could have been
pass interfering literally every pass ever already, literally every pass ever.
And I was sitting here in studio and I was
trying to figure out did I miss something? Am I
down Irish? By the way? I hate you? I know
(03:12):
that were ten seconds behind. What are you doing? Well?
Touched down? Irish? Too bad? And I would have said
it earlier. I got I'm like, got three and a
half minutes ahead of you, But go ahead? What year
is it where you are? One? Who's president? Kidding? Too soon?
Too soon? We won't go there? Okay if they made
the extra point yet, because they're gonna line up there.
They're they're kind of celebrating a little bit, going a
(03:34):
little crazy. Thirty three, thirty two, Clemson up by one.
There is twenty two seconds left, uh in the game,
and they're gonna go ahead and take the one. Try
to send this thing into um at least try to
send into overtime and and deal with it then. So
this has just been a great one. I guess that's
not gonna make much of a difference now that they
picked up that flag on the series before Clemson did
a horrible job they had the ball with two oh
(03:56):
six left, I believe are right around there with three
time out out. Notre Dame gets it back with a
like a minute fifties something and still has like two
time outs, so I I'm not sure how that worked out.
It was absolutely incredible, you know. Yeah, And I will say, um,
you know, we'll see it as a Notre Dame lines
up for the extra point. You can tell us if
it goes through because you're ahead. I am happy that
(04:16):
the camera just cut to Ian Book, the Notre Dame quarterback.
Late in the third quarter. He had a crucial fumble
on the goal line, so I'm glad. Yeah, it looks
like this one is gonna go to overtime. I'm glad
that one play isn't going to decide the games. Well,
you know, Clemson had the fumble too at the end,
uh coughed it up in that that was you know,
(04:37):
a run back for six also, so it's had a
little bit of everything, slopping this, turnovers, great drives, great plays.
Um uh djh, jeez, I've been practice. I'll just have
you say it. I should just say it once, put
it on tape, and we should play it every time
I say, dj, Um, he's just been phenomenal. Um, I
(04:57):
just love this guy. He's he's s really deserving to
be the starter next year, no doubt about that. He's
gonna be the number one picking in that next year's draft.
The draft after that. Well, I mentioned it in the
last episode, but um, David Gascon who does updates for us,
he calls high school football games, and I remember him
coming in one Saturday, maybe even a couple of Saturdays,
and raving about this kid. Uh as he as. By
(05:21):
the way, Notre Dame kicks the extra point. It is
now thirty three all with twenty two seconds left. ARNI,
but yes, uh win or lose this game from Clemson.
It was not the quarterback play that's gonna cost. I've
always told you our quarterback in high school Um ended up.
Um uh well for a little bit, went on the
play in in college and then played in the NFL.
(05:43):
UM actually played for the Raiders in Washington. Um d J.
Jay Schrader. I don't know if you remember him a
little bit before your time. I remember him. I mean,
I mean I could start bringing up random quarterbacks from
the eighties. We got the game of the Year on
your ringing up or Pacific Palisades High School. We'll we'll
(06:04):
keep everybody updated. Like you said, it's tied. I want
to know, um, if they get decent field position, if
they're gonna try to go for it. They've got a
pretty good field goal kicker. Uh, if they decided to say,
all right, let's kind of push it a little bit.
I think they still have a couple of time outs,
try to get into field goal range and try to
win this game. What did I tell you last week?
By the way, we'll kind of switch before we do
(06:25):
one last thing. Any thought to the fact that Notre
Dame kicked it to go to overtime. Some people are saying, oh,
go go for the way and you're at home, go
for two. I say, you kicked the field goal, go
to overtime, But yeah, I would. I would probably say
you kicked the field goals, you go for overtime. No
reason to go ahead and and go for two, especially
with you at home. Um, yeah, I'm okay with that
(06:46):
sixteen seconds left. I didn't see how far they got
it too. I think it's at least past so Uh,
Clemson with two time outs, I wonder if you just
take a knee, Um, or do you push it a
little bit, try to you know, maybe do a quarterback
draw and see if you could pick yourself up ten
yards Like what happened about the seven. You pick up
(07:07):
ten yards. All of a sudden, you're at the thirty seven,
close to the forty. You're one more play from getting
in the field goal range. Uh, sixteen seconds left and
two time bouts. They're not gonna chance hit And I
don't blame them on the road. They'll take it. Neither
gonna send this one into overtime. Torres so um, probably
the right move there, you know. Yes, By the way,
I don't know if he saw this the upset of
the day, Liberty beating Virginias. I did see that in
(07:30):
a crazy way there at the endau. Well, there was
the block field goal that we thought was gonna win
the game, but that was run back for a score. Yes,
But then Liberty they have the ball with six seconds left,
Virginia Tech completely drops back in the pocket. Liberty picks
up about six seven yards on a short play to
put themselves in field goal range. They weren't in field
(07:51):
goal range in Virginia Tech dropped back as if you know,
they were playing for the Hail Mary, and instead they
liberty picked up about seven eight yards which allowed them
to get in field goal range and get the wins.
You know, I'm finally full um with a full college
football buffet. The only thing missing was my Arizona Wildcats.
By the way, I am, I am petitioning for them
(08:14):
to get to win against Shootahs. And Shootah was the
team that couldn't show up. So as far as I'm concerned,
we're we're ready to roll um Utah couldn't, so we
we should be one and oh, well you're not winless,
So well you are winless. But I was gonna say
you aren't own one. So that's a step in the
right direction. Undefeated in November. Who would have thought it? Yeah, yeah,
you guys are tied for first in the lost college
(08:36):
And by the way, I will petition to say that
if Arizona does go five and oh, now since we
only have five games, uh, we deserve to be part
of the national championship. Also if they go five and oh,
I will help you fight that fight. I'm not uh.
I think there's a lot of things and the championship game,
So the five and oh and the championship game. By
(08:57):
the way, Uh, speaking about the pack rop, did you
see USC victree? How improbable was that? It had to
be nine point nine percent chance Arizona State was gonna win.
They were up by third team USC. Those kind of
like a hail Mary in the end zone on fourth
in nine or whatever it was, it gets tipped and
caught for a touchdown by somebody in the back of
(09:18):
the end zone. Then they get the on side kick.
As improbable as that, and then on another fourth in
thirteen or something, they get the touchdown. Two fourth down
plays and on sidekick all in the last three minutes.
I mean, my goodness, and it's gotta be ninety nine
percent um that Arizona State was gonna go ahead and
(09:39):
win that game. Arnie you uh, you've been talking for
years about how you could have dated Genie Buss and
all this stuff. You deserve a date with Genie Bus
more than USC deserved to win that game. Oh geez,
that was yeah, there you go. Wait, wait, or maybe
Arizona State just choked that one away. Let's go ahead
and say something. I don't know, it was a great comeback,
(09:59):
or Arizona State had no business given that one away.
I don't know. I would say Arizona State had no
business given that. I mean they completely outplayed him for
about three and a half quarters. Like you said, fifty
seven minutes or whatever it was, you know if yeah,
way more than three quarters. So good correction by you.
But like you said, tipped touchdown pass in the end zone. Um,
(10:20):
you know, uh, kid to fourth down plays they were
on fourth and nine and fourth and thirteen and that
that's amazing, the astronomical that that that you're going. That's
like ten thousand, the one, maybe a million, the one
that you get all that done. By the way, they
averaged seven yards per rush against us, he completely dominated
(10:41):
the line of scrimmage. Um, they were the better team.
I still don't know how they lost that game. What
do you think of the nine am kickoff specific time?
By the way, it didn't make a difference to me.
I'm on the East class. It wasn't like I had
to get up at the earlier four. And it's nice
to see the pack twelve starting things early. But um,
you know, I guess the announcers and stuff. I was
listening to Jonas they kind of enjoyed it. Maybe it's
(11:03):
not a bad thing to have one pack twelve game
early kind of be one of the feature games out there.
You know, well, I think if it's going to be
the feature game and you can get it in that
Fox newon window, it's one thing. I mean, if it's
Oregon State Washington and you're you know, nobody's gonna watch it,
then I would argue that that you should go ahead
and just played in a a normal time. By the way,
Clemson just scored touchdown. I have not seen if they
(11:25):
kicked the extra point yet, Arnie. So they're up by
six at this point. Yeah, they're they're gonna go ahead. Obviously,
all the scores are reviewed. Um, it looks like he's in.
But you know, when you slow it down to the
fraction of a millimeter or whatever, Um, you know, we'll
see if he's exactly down the fraction of it in short,
but it looks like he's in. Well, we'll see what
happens there. Um, interesting games, some close ones. What about Michigan.
(11:47):
We haven't even really gotten to them. Maybe I was
right about Michigan. I was about to say a few
minutes ago, I said they're gonna have like what four wins,
and my good first of all indiand is a good team.
Take nothing away from them. Okay, Um, they're real good team.
But man, Michigan's gonna look what Michigan State did. They
got claber today and they beat Michigan. It's it's gonna
(12:08):
be a tough year for Michigan. And now you have
to wonder what's gonna happen to Harbor. You know, there's
nothing else to say, Arnie. I've tried to fight it.
I've tried already already texted Bernie because I said, if
they go under, I think it was six wins or something,
I owed him astake dinner. So I texted him today
about it. It's definitely going under six wins. Well that's
what I said. I texted him at halftime. I didn't
even wait till the end of the game, and I said,
(12:29):
where am I taking you? When I come to Vegas.
I'll put it. I'll put it on. Arnie Spaniers taps. Yeah.
So you know it just goes to show you now
as Michigan or the Michigan faithful gonna want him out.
I mean, somewhe already do Where do you go after that?
Who do you go after? Um? Has he been that bad.
Is it just been some bad luck? It's Ohio just
State been just better. I I mean, I don't know
(12:51):
who do you bring in that that's better than Hardball White.
I really think he's a good coach. You know he
is and that. But the problem is exactly what you
just said, Arnie. Up until two games ago, you could argue, well,
Ohio States just that good and you caught this team
at the wrong time, and bowl games do they really
matter when you lose to a Michigan State team, which
is you just reference got smoked again today. Two bad
(13:12):
losses from Michigan State. When you get embarrassed by Indiana.
I know you said it. You're right, we need to
give Indiana credit, but you're Michigan. You should never lose
like that to Indiana. I don't know what the next
chapter is for Michigan for Hardbaugh, but the problem isn't
anything other than what's going on with Michigan. They're moving
in the wrong direction. As I'll tell you what I
wanna do. Um, we're still waiting for the extra point
(13:35):
when we get back. Let's let Pete Feutech enjoy the
rest of this game, because you're nobody's talking to us.
He's gonna be watching the game and be distracted. So
we'll let fu Tech watch in the game as soon
as the game and that we'll talk to Pete fu
Tech from College Football News dot com. I have so
much to ask about UM with Michigan's loss, what he
thought about this don't named Clemson game? UM all through
(13:57):
the top twenty five. So we'll talk to Pete this
as soon as this one goes final. Um. He's Aaron Torres,
I'm anti Spaniard. This is Fox Sports Are Radio. If
you don't know this one, you're fired, aren'tie? Oh stop it,
don't insult my intelligence. If you say boys to men,
you're fired too. Well. They welcome back to Fox Sports
Radio Studios. The segment brought to you by Geico HEA's
(14:20):
Aeron Torres, I'm anti Spaniard. Update. Clemson forty, Notre Dame
thirty three. They're in overtime, obviously, Notre Dame now getting
the ball for the first time in overtime. Second and
eight for the Irish. So we'll let you know what's
going on. Matter of fact, it's going to be first
(14:41):
in goal from like the eight yard line. So Clemson
up by seven in the Irish now getting their chance
the back to back reviews, Um get it right at
all cost, torres or too long, too much, and um
we gotta have a little common sense about it till
out in overtime here. Yeah, just now, just yeah, like
(15:02):
just over the last ten minutes, which just took while
we went to break and then came back and they
were still looking at back to back touchdowns, you know, yeah, no,
I um, I was trying to figure out what was
going on. Again, we're in studio here, so it's hard
to know exactly what's going on. The first one, what
I told you, it looks like he might have been down,
but they'll probably give it to him. They didn't. He
(15:23):
was like a fraction down and I don't even know
if you could tell. So that that took about five minutes,
it seemed like. And then of course the next one
seemed like an obvious touch on. They have to look
at that one again, and then they confirmed that it
was a touchdown. So you know, back to back reviews,
one back to the one yard line and the other
one they gave a touchdown. People on Twitter already could
plain he takes away from the momentum momentum. I mean,
(15:46):
we're in overtime and you've just sucked out like seven
minutes out of the game. I'm reviewing them back to
back plays in this you know, Yeah, I don't disagree.
I mean, I you want to get him right, but
there's a certain point where it just becomes a little
bit too much. We'll talk to Pete feud Tech College
Football News dot Com as soon as this is over.
I wanted him to enjoy the rest of the game. Uh,
(16:06):
and uh, you know, checking on out because everybody's just
tuned into this one. It's gonna be first in goal.
But let's start with Michigan. I brought this up before
the break. Uh. They lose to India. A matter of fact,
they got Clapper thirty twenty one. Indiana was the better team.
They dominated, as Bill Belichick would say, every facet of
the game, the offense, the defense, the special teams. Nothing
(16:27):
they didn't do better um than Michigan. Michigan. Um. Right now,
it is looking like a whole hurtful My my friend,
it could be a long season. What do you do
if you're Michigan do you start thinking about making a
change from Harbor after the year is this, uh, chuck
this up to man, we had just a Corona year
and things were crazy and we'll just rebound next year. Um,
(16:51):
and you just don't panic or do you start looking
for a successor what do you do if you're Michigan.
It's so tough, Arnie, because you know, one, he's got
one year left time contract. You can't fire him in
a pandemic, right like, I don't think you can. I
don't think you can. I at least I wouldn't. I.
I'd have to bring him back for at least another year. Now.
If you don't give him an extension right now, um,
(17:14):
then it's going to send the message. And I don't
think he's gonna be too happy about it. And that's good.
That could be a tough last year coaching, you know,
and it's gonna be impossible to recruit, and you're just
gonna set your program back even further. By the way,
Notre Dame just punched it in, so they are now
down by one pending a p a t uh in
overtime by the UM. So yeah, no, listen, it's so tough,
aren't he Because you know, as I was watching that game,
(17:36):
and I was really watching last week too. Uh. The
offense is is clearly getting worse and not getting better.
And the concern is the defense always used to handle
themselves against pretty much everybody other than Ohio State. And
now you're talking about a situation where you give up
four hundred fifty yards against Michigan State last week. You
give up thirty eight points today to Indiana almost five
(17:58):
yards of total offense. That's the part that's can turning
to me. Aren'tie the stuff yet at least used to
be good at You're not good at it. So so
what is Michigan good at right now? I can't find
an answer. And I hate to give you credit, but
you look at the rest of the schedule. Uh, Maryland
beat Penn State today, Rutgers played Ohio State tough. And
(18:18):
by the way, Rutgers played Indiana tougher last week than
you did this week. Yeah, and then they got they'll
have to play Rutgers Michigan. I have to look at
their schedule. There's not too many. I think there's like
one give me otherwise, Um, there's not too many wins
on that schedule for Michigan. This is what I'm saying.
I don't think there's any game means. I mean, first
of all, they're supposed to play Wisconsin next week. We'll
see if that happens. But but then at Rutgers, who's
(18:39):
who's played? Who played Indiana tougher than you did, Penn State,
who the heck knows what's their what their deal is?
And then Maryland and Ohio State. I'm just looks really
good to a junior over there. I mean, maybe one
win and then you're gonna have to play tough to
get that second win. I mean, this could be a
three win season for Michigan right now. I told you
four I was were lloughing to me what I said
(19:01):
for Remember all the tweets, I got all the text
You idiot, what's wrong with you not getting nosed today?
That's for sure? Huh uh yeah, no, you're not getting him. No,
it was. It was a good call by you. I
gave him the benefit of the doubt. I mean, look,
last week they lost by a field goal. You can,
in my head at the time, you could say it
was just a really bad performance. But at a certain point,
(19:23):
it stops being a bad performance and it just starts
being who this team is. And like I said, the
concern is. It's one thing to lose to Ohio State.
It's one thing to lose in a big Bowl game
to a good team. You lose back to back to
Michigan State and I Indiana, and I know Indiana has
ranked and both. You gotta win these games. If you're Michigan,
you're too talented. Unbelievable hardball. It's got to be feeling
(19:44):
the pressure. He's been feeling the pressure for a while.
But it's about as worse it is right now. It's unbelievable.
Notre Dame does tie it up. It's forty forty. When
do you go for two points in a game like this?
Talking about the Irish, Um, you said that they go
for should they have gone forward with twenty two seconds
left and try to win the game? Then do you
go for it after the first overtime? Um? Remember they
(20:05):
were the second team to go, so they had the
benefit of going on four downs. Um? Do you just
continue going along because you're the home team? Um? Do
you do it just when you're feeling gutsy and the
crowd is going go go go out, But you're on
the road. Well, clemsons, on the road, what do you
what do you do? When when do you feel like
you're going for it? You know we're gonna find out.
I mean, you know it's tough because they've moved the
(20:26):
ball all night, and so if it's not as though,
I know, they got kind of that flukey touchdown earlier
you mentioned Travis et and it was a pitch to him,
he fumbles, it gets returned, But it's not as though, uh,
you haven't been able to move the ball. And so
if you look at it right now, they've actually outgained
Clems into this point. Uh, they've been better on third down.
(20:49):
They okay, So if the offense is okay, the offense
is doing well, all right, I'll give you that they're
doing great. So when do you have the guts to
say we're going for the win? When do you say
forget about the stra point or do you keep doing
it along until you're forced to go to the two
point conversion? Because mathematically we know the two point conversion
um is significantly less to accomplish than kicking the extra point,
(21:11):
So why should you put yourself at a disadvantaged at
least mathematically. Well, first of all, what I would say
is um, you know, historically there's two times that you
go for an extra point or you go for two
and stay the extra point is that you are either
on the road or you just feel like you're not
the better team, And the longer the game goes on,
(21:33):
the less likely it is you have a chance to win.
By the way, Arnie, I just saw the statu Pete
Sampson from the Athletic According to so and so, Clemson
has stopped fourteen of the last fifteen two point conversions. Again,
So there there's your answer about going for two point conversions, right,
And that's a big part of it, is a very
big part of it. And see now how I known that.
(21:53):
I don't think I would have gone for two points
until I have to go to two points against this team.
Then uh yeah, I just think you gotta you gotta
hope that you can hold him to a field goal
on one of these drives um or you know, they
obviously get the ball back here, which helps. Obviously the
possessions change. But I'm not a big fan of going
forward if you don't have when you've out went. I
(22:13):
don't know that they've quote unquote outplayed Clemson, but they
have been there equal so to me, I think it's
too early. You keep battling to keep playing. But that's
my opinion. All right, since we haven't had any Pack trump,
let's give a little of for the Pack twelfth. What
a fun Colorado U c l A game? It was,
Uh Colorado? I think I like a thirty five seven lead.
U c A came storming back to get a touch
(22:34):
on before the half. They actually make it get within seven,
they lose forty two. They don't get the onside kick
like USC does, so they come out a loser. Carl
Darell's team um beats his old team. So with Chip
Kelly now at help for U c l A. What
a fun game that one was a lot of offense
in that one. A fun game. That one was not
(22:55):
if you're a u c l A fan. And here's
my question, Arnie. You know we talked about the disappointment
at Jim Harbaugh. I mean, Chip Kelly three and nine,
four and eight oh and one, and that was probably
the worst team on your schedule all season long. Like
I'm not saying he's gotta be fired or anything like that,
but year three, aren't you give up forty eight points
(23:16):
to the worst team you're gonna play all year. Everyone
wants to crush hardball, and they should crush our ball, right,
but Chip Kelly deserves just as much blame for not
even having this thing close to turned around as Hardball's
gun right, you want to get in, of course you
could reach us Aaron on the score tour as I've
been stinking. Genius one will come back, look at more
top twenty five. We'll see if this game ends, we'll
(23:38):
see when we'll get Pete feu Tech. We're just flying
by the seat of our pants, a nour number one,
that's for sure. But first, let's see what's trending with
our buddy Steve the Sega. What's going on out there? Hello, gentlemen.
This game is gonna go on forever, and it's been great.
But I believe the overtime started a half an hour ago,
so it's been that. Guess what I did tonight? The
(23:58):
segar went shopping for Christmas presents. They'll be coming out,
so I gotta early start on that. Mr. Yeah, although
your wives are the best presents giving, but yeah, sure
they'll They'll be going out early this year. For those
gifts were for your self, Ary, All of them know
(24:21):
the maple syrup the jams, all the bologny that I
sent the guys back at this we get enough of
the ladder on the show. By the way, in this
Clemson game at Notre Dame, we have a record most
yards passing against Notre Dame ever by any quarterback in
any game. And it comes by a freshman for Clemson
DJ Whui Young delay. We're all getting getting used to
(24:43):
that name, but it's over four yards passing for him.
The record was by Heisman winner Carson Palmer of USC
four against the Irish in two thousand two. DJ forty
two passing four d twenty six yards, two touchdowns and
no interceptions. There in the second overtime, tied forty in
this battle of undefeated number one Clemson at number four
(25:05):
Notre Dame. And the only thing that's taking the edge
off an otherwise great game, aside from the reviews in
the delays, is the fact that this year only, it's
just first place against second place for the a c
C Championship game in Charlotte next month, and the first
place team could be one of these two, in the
second place team one of these two, and they'll just
face each other all over again. Now, Miami did not
(25:27):
get upset last night, so they still might have something
to say about that. But that's the only drawback I
can see. We do have too late night games, by
the way. Otherwise, on FS one, it's early second quarter.
Washington State leads seven nothing at Oregon State, and there
is a Hawaii home game tonight without Hawaii in its
first quarter. New Mexico ten seven leaders at Hawaii. Everything
(25:50):
else's final. Number three Ohio State seven winners against Rutgers
justin field, six total touchdowns. Florida beat Georgia despite being
behind ten nothing early, they trailed and then dominated Georgia
with three turnovers Kyle Traska the Gators four touchdown passes.
Easy wins for Number six Cincinnati, Number seven Texas and
(26:12):
m Twelfth ranked Oregon open its season beating Stanford thirty
five fourteen. Stanford had ten penalties, was missing its quarterback,
and went over four on field goal attempts tonight. Aside
from that, it was a great opener for them. Number
thirteen Indiana beat Michigan thirty eight twenty one. Fourteenth ranked
Oklahoma State, after being shut out in the first half,
down twelve nothing at the break, still won at Kansas
(26:33):
State eighteen. Is K State missed a late two point
pass wins for number fifteen Coastal Carolina, number sixteen Marshall
and on FS one tonight, number seventeen Iowa State came
back to beat Baylor thirty eight thirty one. Baylor is
one and four this season. SMU and Oklahoma each with wins.
Number twenty USC with the two late touchdown passes, beat
Arizona State twenty seven, number twenty two ranked Texas seventeen
(26:55):
thirteen over West Virginia and twenty fifth rank Liberty within
the final seconds the fifty one yard field goal to
win at Virginia Tech thirty five. You have to realize
how enormous this is for the program. They're located in
Virginia and they won at Virginia Tech, and this is
only their third year in FBS. Like like b y U,
(27:17):
they're an independent, but they will be playing Liberty. They
will be playing at NC State still this year and
at number fifteen Coastal Carolina. I believe those two used
to be in the same conference. Updating Notre Dame, It's
forty all second overtime irish with the ball and a
third down coming up as they are driving what down
around the ten yard line. Utah stay at OH in
(27:37):
three parted ways with its head coach Gary Anderson. Dodgers
first base coach George Lombard is leaving for the Detroit Tigers.
According to The l A Times, he'll be the bench
coach in Detroit for new manager A. J. Hinch. Authentic
won the Breeders Cup Classic. Austin Cindric took NASCAR's Affinity
Series title. The Baltimore Ravens activated wide receiver Dez Bryant
off the practice squad. He's been out for near three years.
(28:01):
Baltimore's wide receivers are last in the league in receptions
and in yards. And Titans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, with his
knee injury, is unlikely to play against the Bears tomorrow
and he may need surgery. According to NFL Network, updating
the double overtime game. Yeah it's still forty forty, but
it is first and goal Irish. Wow, this is a
(28:21):
good one. Thanks thanks to say Welcome back to the
Fox Sports Radio studios. It's all brought to you by Geico.
It's easy to say fifteen per cental more in car
instruments with Geico. Just go to Geico dot com or
you could give them a call one eight hundred nine
for seven auto. The only hard part figuring out which
way is easier. You want to be part of the show,
Aaron underscore, torres I'm at stinking genius. Uh, stink of genius. One.
(28:46):
That's easy for me to stay because I'm trying to walk,
trying to watch the games as if they score. Let
me ask you a quick question. Um, did we always
say with college football what we love about is that
the regular season had so much meeting one law us
and you're eliminated. Yet everybody say, in this game movie
doesn't make a difference because Noreda'm gonna play clumps and
they get in the a SEC Championship. Um, and they
(29:08):
both could probably still go to the four team championship. So, UM,
is that quite fair? Shouldn't a team that's below the
loser of this team get a crack and moving up?
Or do these guys get a second bye to the Apple?
I guess is what I'm saying, Torreza doesn't seem quite fair?
You know? Well? I mean, I guess what I would
(29:29):
ask you is if you're the number four team and
you lose to the number one team in the country,
should you fall? And then the opposite perspective would be,
if you're the number one team in the country with
the eventual number one pick in the NFL Draft, and
you lose on the road in double, triple, quadruple overtime,
should you be punished? I was gonna say like this,
I'm started rup, not your dame. Let's say they lose, okay, Um,
(29:50):
how far do you penalize them from losing to the
number one team? Cincinnati, Georgia. Georgia lost terribly to Florida.
They should drop big time since Sinnai he's undefeated right
on their heels Texas A and M. And how far
do you move Florida with their repressive victory? You know
what I mean? So, um, you know, do they get
that or there's not your name? Get to stay there
(30:12):
with a really good loss, if that makes any sense,
you know. That's what I'm That's what my argument is.
I don't listen. I don't know exactly what I would do.
As you said, Cincinnati's five and oh uh and m
s five and one and does have a great win
against Florida. I don't know what the answer is, but
I also don't don't think that we should come out
of this game writing off Notre Dame for the rest
(30:33):
of the year if they were to lose this game
more frankly Clemson either. I mean, I don't think we
would with Clemson necessarily, but Notre Dame takes a lead.
By the way, Arnie so forty forty here in double overtime, right,
And you know what, I'm gonna agree with you for
one reason, then we're gonna be punishing teams for scheduling
harder games, um out of conference, and you don't want
to take that away. You don't want to start being
(30:55):
Alabama when they start scheduling Northeast Southwest Arkansas olcohol, you
know what I'm saying. So, um, you want to have
these good games, you want like this. Well, and the
other argument too, would be, you know, it's not as
though it's one thing if you're the number four team
in the country and you lose the number one team
in the country and you get embarrassed. I mean, it's
(31:15):
clear these two teams are relatively equal. Now you could argue,
obviously it's a little bit of a different deal because
Trevor Lawrence isn't in this game. But you can't sit
here and say, well, Notre Dame got completely outclassed. I mean,
you go position by position, they're pretty much Clemson's equal
outside of probably the quarterback position, where Clemson missing Trevor Lawrence.
So that's why I would have a problem dropping them,
(31:38):
because it's not as though one team proved to be
clearly inferior. So we'll see what happens come Monday, but
I don't think either teams should be out of the
conversation regardless of who loses. By the way, if Clemson
doesn't lose this game, I don't want to hear anything
about Trevor Lawrence not being the quarterback because, um, what
DJ has done has been absolutely phenomenal. Trevor Lawrence couldn't
have had any better of numbers or um, you know, well,
(32:00):
you have thirty three points at the end of regulation,
it's not forty in the overtime. He's done everything he could,
no turnovers. He might even have played better than what
Trevor Lawrence could have put up. Number wise. I'm not
saying he's about a quarterback, but he's a damn good one.
That's only an excuse if you use that as Trevor
Lawrence not being there, you know, no, I agree. Quarterback
play is it what's gonna lose him this game? I
(32:20):
thought they were sloppy early. Um, I thought they were
really sloppy early. You mentioned, we both mentioned a few
times the Travis Ett n fumble, you know, return over
for a touchdown. Um. Yeah, I thought they were a
little sloppy early. I thought Notre Dame played really well early.
But if they lose this game, it's not gonna because
of DJ. Well, here's a defining moment. Not Youre Dame
(32:41):
gets the sack. So it's second in nineteen for Clemson. Uh,
they're on the Irish thirty four yard line. So, um,
it's gonna be real tough for them to pick up
that first album. Matter of fact, they're gonna get sacked again.
They're back at they're going the wrong way, they're back
at their own forty. It's now gonna be third down,
fact to back sacks by the Irish, and this one
(33:03):
has really put Clemson with their backs against the wall.
Whatever Irish faithful that that was allowed at this game. Um,
they're making some serious noise. It looks like but a
tough situation right now. Not Your Dame has to be
careful they don't commit some stupid penalty, UM that gives
a Clemson an automatic first down. But the Notre Dame
defense starting to step up right now, Torres, they're looking
(33:25):
pretty good in overtime, second overtime. Yeah, no, they they've
been a phenomenal team. And it's like and they're closer
to a win than they have probably been at any
point in this game. But whether if they were to
somehow not win this game, first of all, be devastating
at this point. But on the flip side, you just
you can't sit here and say that this isn't that
that Uh, they're they're not deserving of the ranking anything
(33:48):
like that, because they have been awesome all day. I'll
tell you what. It's gonna be. Fourth and twenty four
before we go to the break. Let's see if Not
Your Dame wins this game. Um, because right now, it's
gonna take a miracle. It's gonna have to take like
one of those USC miracles where they got it on
fourth and nine or fourth and thirteen. Um, maybe a
tip penalty something to keep this Clemson game alive. I
(34:11):
don't know if they're gonna use or burn their last
time out. They are. So I'll tell you what, when
we get back, we'll find out who the winner. Maybe
that's coming up next right here on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, welcome back to the Fox Sports Radio studios.
This segment brought to you by Geico, Aaron Torres, Arnie Spaniard. Oh,
Twitter a buzz, Twitter buzz. First of all, fourth and
(34:39):
twenty four. Not that it's a big deal. Thrown in
the end zone. Don't go in short and try to
pitch and do all that. Blowy, Come on now, Yeah,
I just thought I saw dan Orlovsky famed you kind
of lum um second best you kind of love that
here behind me. But uh, he's he said, like that
was the play that you drew up in that situation.
(35:00):
I actually agree. Is you got a kid. I mean
we saw DJ's arm today. That kid can let her
rip um and uh and I'm just saying, just throw
it to the end zone. I'm with you. Great game, though, Arnie,
incredible game. Fans storming the field. The internet's upset. Oh
the intersaid, forget about that. It was a great win
(35:21):
for the Irish. The first thing that's trending. Is no
social distancing in South Bend. Uh And I was screaming
out it, so I get to be the first guy
to say it on the radio. They're not six ft
apart a matter of fact, that whole stated maybe within
six feet, uh, Torresa, there's no social distancing going on
right now? There? You know there is no social distancing
(35:41):
going on. But I would just say this, and we
don't bring politics into this show, but there wasn't much
social distancing and cities across our country today. So I
have no problem with that in the same way that
I don't have a problem with people going out to
celebrate non sports activities, which we're not gonna talk about.
It was fourth and twenty four for Sin when this
(36:01):
happened on the ball in the shotgun trop Scott steps up,
moves to his rank, throws, completes ball, pits behind ball
on the ground. No, no, da ain't trying to pounce
on it. Game over, No, no day knocks off number one,
no trade Dame radio network. They go storming, by the way,
(36:26):
is thatdie? Of course it's a big win. But you
know you're the Irish. Should you be storming like that?
I mean Twitter is a buzz on that one. And
by the way, someone else on Twitter put Clemson yet
to win the games since Joe Biden has been elected president.
That's not something you'd say. Arest I saw, I saw that.
(36:49):
Don't make it political people. Um let me reading this
one from Zach where says my guy Torres has been
saved for years. Brian Kelly may not be saved him,
but he gets way too much hate for a guy
that his team consistently winning ten plus games every year.
Not everyone realizes how heart of a job. Not your
Dame could be so happy he's finally getting his moment tonight. Um,
(37:11):
you've been uh certainly um you know, pushing his uh
you know, ringing for his ava evocacy if that if
that's even a word. But um, yeah, you were right
about him. He does get way too much hate. And
note youre Dame real tough to get, uh you know,
all the athletes and they want yeah, no, a hundred percent.
And that's what I'm saying is listen, I we would
(37:32):
have to get somebody on that cover Notre Dame to know,
but I mean the academic standards there are real. This
isn't one of those fake they can get anybody into
school that they want to and not No, they can't.
It's not a public school. Uh. It's really hard to
have success there. And by the way, that's why, frankly,
they haven't been competitive in terms of a national championship
(37:53):
contender in thirty years since the Lou Holtz era. It's
really hard to have success there. Uh. And the fact
is they've won ten games three straight years. They obviously
made the playoff a few years ago. It looks like
they might be headed there again. Um, but you know,
I just think the guy. Every job in college football
is different. Ohio States has different benefits and drawbacks that
(38:16):
other schools don't as opposed to you know, Illinois. What
what I'm rambling? But the point is it's not easy
to win there. It's not easy to get kids in
the school there. I just get Brian Kelly so much credit. Clemson, Alabama,
Ohio State, Notre Dame is still gonna go ahead and
be the top four. It's just gonna mix up a
little bit where Alabama be one, Ohio State to Notre
Dame three. Clemson probably dropping down the number four. I
(38:37):
don't know if they really should tho since they went
on the road without the starting quarterback that that made
much of a difference. My question is, Georgia, you get
the hell out of your You're out of the top ten,
goodbye to you. What do you do with the Cincinnati's,
Texas A and M's Florida's no doubt in my mind,
they're not as good as the other four teams I mentioned, Um,
what about b y U? When do they get a break? Well?
(38:58):
And what are we gonna do in Wisconsin? They better
played next week there one and oh and I think
they're damn good team, but I don't think they're gonna
have a chance to prove it because they don't play you.
They may not play enough games. Let me ask you
a question. You're a voter. Who's number four for you tomorrow? Clemson?
I agree, I think you're right. Yeah, I have to.
I gotta I gotta put out Alabama one. Um, I
(39:19):
gotta put Ohio State two. Now, the argument is who's
going to be number three? Well, it's between Clemson Notre Dame.
Don't your name one? Grant that it was at home
and Clemson another starting quarterback. But I can't worry about
that right now. I gotta put notere Dame three, and
then Clemson at number four. I would put them because
Georgia lost in five and Cincinnati and them and four
(39:40):
to I'll move up one slot. No, I agree, I agree,
I agree, And I think that you know, to me,
I'm not gonna punish Clemson too much losing on the
road against the number four team in the country, really
really really good football team. Um, but I just I
just think that there's other quality teams and there's still
a lot of football left to be played. But I
don't want to punish Clemson too much for losing. Tonight,
(40:02):
I'm watching a little pack at twelve late, Washington State seven,
Oregon State, nothing. Man, I I can't believe everybody's playing now.
Every team's played except for my Arizona Wildcats. It's just
not the same Taurres without me going crazy watching the
Arizona Wildcats thumping. Putting a thumping on somebody right now?
You know that, don't They would be Yeah, that's the
(40:24):
sad part is we'd be winning. We would have won already.
We would have beat Utah. Oh really, okay, all right?
You positive in that? Huh, you're crazy, man. We should
be wanted already. An hour one already in the books.
We crushed that. Um, we'll come back. We'll wrap up
college football. Pete feud Tech will join us though. In
the second hour we'll start getting ready for what's going
(40:45):
on in Week nine of the NFL Plenty to get
to Aaron Torres, Arnie span your right here on Fox
Sports Radio. Good evening everyone, Aaron Torres, are you span
your right here on Fox Sports Radio? By the way,
we are coming to you live from the Fox Sports
Radio studios, and it's all brought to you by Geico.
(41:08):
Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent of more in
car insurance. All you have to do is visit geico
dot com for a free rate quote. You want to
be part of the show. You figured this out, Aaron
underscore Torres, I would sticking genius one. By the way,
what's wrong with you? Tours? Why are you fighting with
people on Twitter for the five minutes we go to
the commercial break? What's wrong with you? I'm not fighting.
(41:31):
I just think it's interesting that we pick and choose
when it's okay to congregate and when it's not. And
there's people that are pretending to have outrage because notre
Dame fans storm the field. Uh that's all now. By
the way, if you want to have the separate conversation
of it's dumb because it could potentially lead to greater
risk for football players and put your season in jeopardy,
(41:54):
that's a different conversation. But I saw large groups gathering
all across the country today. If Notre Dame fans want
to celebrate, I have no problem with it. Yeah. I mean,
for the we just saw a great game, double overtime,
and Twitter is a buzz because there was no social distancing.
I gotta tell you that they probably shouldn't have stored
the field. But you know, what do you want to
happen there? What are you going to do? You're gonna
(42:15):
start tackling the students. You can't do anything about it.
You gotta keep six feet away. Also, um, they got
caught up in the moment they got out there, and
UM that's what you have. I mean, I don't know
what else you could have done about this, Torres No, Twitter,
of course is acting like the entire campus robbed the
(42:37):
bank or something like that. It's unbelievable what's going on
out there. Yea, of all the risky behaviors by the way,
that college kids are gonna take part in tonight. I
don't you know that. I don't know where that is
up there in the grand scheme of things. I'd also
tell you this, Arnie, I don't think a lot of
people know this. The a c c S policy on
COVID testing is as follows. If you test positive, you
(42:58):
don't have to retest for up to ninety days because
that is the CDC policy. So Notre Dame had a
big outbreak probably about three or four weeks ago. Half
these guys aren't even gonna get tested again the rest
of the season regardless. So let's everyone pump let everyone,
let's everyone pump the brakes. Let the kids enjoy the win. UM.
(43:20):
And yeah, it was a great game, by the way,
unrelated to anything, it was an awesome game. So I
have not heard this yet, so I'm looking forward to
hearing this. Um. Clemson loses the game, Clemson announcers are
talking about storming the field. Here's the Clemson Tiger radio
Network Wenna l A takes a shot that snap Litre Dame.
(43:42):
Rush is three steps up in the pocket right side,
throws and throws an underneath and then the latter will
get back ballers knocked up in the air, down, it
goes falls in the hands and that's ball game tackle
of the twenty five and Notre Dame has done it.
And as they have knocked off Clemson and they will
storm the field, there will be no social distancing here tonight.
(44:03):
They're probably gonna get fine for this one, because that's
a big no no here in when COVID call it
type stuff going on, especially with the outbreak here and
not too bad. I thought they were gonna really get on.
I'm okay they brought it up, but they brought it
up real fast. Instead of talking about the game, they
(44:25):
would ride into thembsorbing the field. Um we're talking about
three seconds after the game was over there torres I,
you know, kind of diverting the loss of guessing. Yeah,
that's what I'm saying. It sounded a lot like, rather
than talk about the actual game, that we just we're
gonna talk about this. But no, I listen. I mean
they were okay with it. I'm not okay with it,
but they didn't go, Oh my goodness, they need to
(44:47):
go ahead and give them a loss for this or
something like that. You know, what I mean, that's what
I mean. Well, they did say, well, they'll probably get
it fine. It's like they will. They will get a
fine for that, they will. But I just think I'm
not gonna sit here and get in my high horse
and pretend to be upset at a bunch of college
kids for uh, for having fun. And by the way,
the other thing too with Notre Dame that's probably worth
noting is that, um, they only allow students in the
(45:11):
in the games, so at least they're not bringing it
back into the community outside of Notre Dame and all
that stuff. So it's students only at Notre Dame. So
I say, let the kids party, but would win? Um.
A couple of people on Twitter have said the good
news is the students that were attending the game apparently
had to be tested. Is that what you're saying, Torres?
So oh, I didn't know that, No that I didn't know. Yeah, well,
(45:33):
I again, I don't even know exactly how many people
were at the game. Um, so everybody at the game
had to be tested to be allowed in. Is that
it's before today? I don't know. I'm I mean, I'm
going along with it, just like everybody else's Ericans. It's
like day to day. It's another story, just a couple
of minutes ago. Not to switch topics. I thought Matthew
(45:56):
Stafford was out. Now he's cleared. If he's okay, tomorrow
morning he's play and it's amazing. You know. Well, I
don't know this, but I hope that these rules are
starting to get restricted a little bit. And I'll just
give you an example or loosened a little bit. I
should say you an example this week with Justin Turner
Dodgers MLB. You can be mad at that guy if
(46:17):
you want. He was on the field until the eighth inning.
He's been with the organization for almost a decade, been
part of two World Series losers. If he wants to
go on the field and celebrate with his teammates, I'm
not gonna lose my mind over. And it's the same
with Clemson. It is the same with Notre Dame. Excuse me.
That program has been on the brink for years and
has been this close to getting that big signature. When
(46:38):
these kids are in college for four years, it's a
memory they're gonna take with them forever. And by the way,
here's the other thing. Do you think they're going right
back to the dorms and tucking themselves under the covers
and gold straight to sleep, because I don't already no parties,
no parties going on, And why did you? Why do
you understand that thought you? That's what I'm saying. Yeah,
I can you imagine they have a party after this,
they have to break it up and they have to
(46:59):
start a suspending kids from school. That's it we're sending
your ho that's an interesting counterpoint. Well, first of all,
can you throw out, you know, five thousand kids out
of school? I don't know, maybe, I mean, maybe I
don't know. But remember before the year, we were talking
about like Syracuse and um, some other schools, like there
was a party of forty six kids and they're throwing
(47:20):
kids out of school, Like how's that? How long is
that gonna last? And until there's some really big parties
on campus? You know? Yeah? Well, and that's what it was, Um,
I remember it was North Northeastern was one of the
big ones that they had the kids sign a policy
we're not gonna do this, and we can throw you
out after we took your attendance. What I'm saying with
Notre Dame is I don't know if they can throw
(47:41):
out all those kids that were stored in the field,
because there was quite a few people on the field
by the end of game. Great game, Instant Classic goes
to double ot Notre Dame wins it forty. UM. A
couple of things on this. I thought, you know, first
of all, I thought Notre Dame dominated early by running
the all. I thought they were gonna put this in
(48:01):
one away. I give Clemson uh all the props for
making the halftime adjustment and then taking the lead. I
thought the Irish ward could get the ball back when
they took away the third down pass interference, which by
the way, was completely wrong about the officials. They should
be reprimanded for that. You don't throw the flag and
pick it up, especially on the past interference. UM. I
(48:22):
don't even think anybody was looking at that, So I
don't know how you just picked that up just because
Dabo Sweeney was screaming bloody murder on that. So, UM,
I think a terrible job by their UM. Finally, UM,
Brian Kelly gets the big win. UH. Irish certainly people
are telling me and I'll read one what I got
on Twitter right now. UM, Arnie call it. Uh called
(48:45):
it against Michigan. But oh no, wait, um, noture name
deserves to jump up over Ohio State. In Pole's most
adjective statement today. Why because I'm a Buckeyes fan. I see,
I agree, and you know you're big on if you
don't lose, you shouldn't lose your spot in the polls.
I just sit here and say Notre Dames played seven games,
(49:05):
Ohio States played three, and by the way, Ohio States
great big win. I'm not saying O how State's not good,
but they're great. Win against Penn State last weekend when
now Penn States owned three. So I would have no
problem putting Notre Dame at number two. I think you
should probably leave bamat number one, considering that they steamrolled
a good Texas A and M team. But I think
Notre Dame I would if I was voting, I would
(49:27):
put Notre Dame ahead of Ohio State. I wouldn't. Notre
Dame did a great job stopping the run at the end.
Never got a twenty eight yards on a T carries
one point six yards that carry. Never seen Clemson bottled
up like that in my life. Of course, the passing
game was going pretty well, no doubt about that. Over
four yards passing, two touchdowns, no interceptions. Um. Both quarterbacks
(49:50):
played well ian booked though with the big fumble almost
costing in the game. There. You know, let me give
you a hypothetical. Notre Dame wins out, Clemson wins out
a c C chan pionship game. Do you give a
definitive edge even still to Clemson with no Trevor Lawrence?
They go on the road, they lose in double overtime.
So does that you give you that much more confidence
(50:10):
that when they do meet in the a c C
Championship game with Trevor Lawrence on the field, that Clemson
is definitively the better team. Well, one, you're not gonna
be playing in South ben right. Two, where's the a
c C Championship game? That be all right, Charlotte. So
you'll have the home field for the most part. Are
they gonna be fans in that game? Is it gonna
be have fans full fans? Um? I don't know what
(50:33):
the policy is gonna be. I don't know what the
policy is now, and who knows what the policy is
gonna be then? And yes, you'll have your quarterback back
but I don't know how much better stats that you
can put up than what was today, But I still
think it gives you a little bit of an advantage there.
No Tre Dame was a seven enough point underdog. I
don't think there'll be a seven half point underdog the
second time around. I could see UH clubs should being
(50:56):
about a four point UH favorite in that one. What
did you say, Eric Roberts, what's going on, my friend?
As far as the championship game, which will be only
a couple hours away from Clemson in Charlotte, North Carolina,
they're complying with state regulations there, which currently allow for
quote seven percent capacity at outdoor venues like this seven
(51:16):
seven So if your capacity is greater than ten thousand,
which at an NFL stadium, it is seven percent capacity.
Notre Dames home games this year, they have listed ten
thousand in attendants at each home game so far this year.
See might go out more than ten thousand today for
the Clemson matchup tonight. They were reminding people during the
week not only is it only students, faculty, and staff allowed,
(51:39):
but the tickets are for your own personal use. Not
only can you not seldom, you can't even bring somebody
who's outside of your own household, and you had to
present your Notre Dame I d to get in tonight. Well,
And I think that makes sense though, because if there
is some kind of broader testing going on on campus,
I think it's a great idea. And so we'll see
what the repercussions are from the storming of the field,
(52:01):
if there are any specifically for the Notre Dame football team.
But but yeah, no, I think Notre Dames actually handled
themselves pretty well in terms of all this. They very
early on when students only, I thought that made a
lot of sense. Big victory for the Irish in double
overtime forty um, which kind of overshadows the FDA big
victory over Georgia. I mean this game was thirty eight
(52:24):
twenty one at Florida, put up a thirty eight points
and halftime again, do you know, Georgia was up fourteen
nothing and then they came back and out scored the
thirty eight to seven, and just in the first half
alone going on to victory, Trask was unbelievable. Once Georgia
had victor injuries at quarterback, it was like I was
ready to come on and they were just burdened through
(52:45):
quarterbacks out there. Florida was the better team. Georgia had
no chance of this one after the big injury. Yeah,
this is one where you'd like to make some big,
bold statement about what does it all mean, because Georgia
was ranked a little bit ahead of Florida. Florida's just
a better team, and Florida, by the way, it's certainly
the more healthy team. As you referenced Stetson Bennett, the
Georgia quarterback, hurt his shoulder. Uh, Georgia is just beat up,
(53:09):
by the way. I'm sure you saw it. But one
of their top wide receivers first, just a brutal injury.
I actually saw it live in real time and they
kept showing the replay um. But then also George's top
cornerback was out. He got in a bike accident this
past week. So George's reeling right now. I know everyone
wants to make it this huge indictment on Georgia and
(53:29):
what does it mean for them, and but I just
think they're really really beat up. I thought Florida was
the better team, and obviously it showed in the final score.
By the way, on the tackle immediately I knew there
was something wrong and that that was before he got hurt. Um.
I'm like, oh, that was awkward and that was a
hard tackle. Um, and then and then you saw the
injury and I couldn't watch after that. It was it
(53:52):
was a bad one out there. But Florida goes ahead
and gets the victory. You want to jump in aerond
on the score, Torres, I'm at stink of Gene just won.
Finally joining us now that the Clips and Notre Dame
game is over. Pete Futech College Football News, College Football
News dot Com. We'll talk to him about Michigan, We'll
talk to him about hardball, We'll talk to him about
this Clemson Notre Dame game. We got plenty to recap.
(54:14):
Pete feu Tech coming up next right here on Fox
Sports or Radio. You gotta know this one, Arnie Waiting.
It's a good song for Notre Dame. The world notes.
I love those guys. Oh my gosh. Welcome back to
(54:37):
the Fox Sports Radio studio. This segment run to you
by Geico erin Torres. Already span your Let's get right
to our guests joining us, doatu. You can check him
out of College Football News and College Football News dot Com.
It's our buddy Pete fu tech boy that clips and
note to day, no excuses cleps and can't say they
didn't have their quarterback because DJ played awfully well. That
(54:58):
was an instant class. That was a good one. First
of all, Between that and the Biden speech, that's two
hollow notes references for me in the last oh what
two hours. That's way too much hollow host for one
day in my world. But yeah, you know that, Look,
the d is going to be the number one overall
(55:20):
pick in the NFL draft. He would probably be at
worst the top five overall pick if he was eligible
this year, and somebody just take him and just say
let's get to know, let's use him for a while. Uh.
But so the quarterback play was phenomenal. That defense was hurt.
And I don't want to take anything away from Notre
Dame in any way because that's look, you just beat
(55:41):
a number one team was still it's loaded with five
star coup across the floor, but they were I was
missing three key guys on that D. Again though they
made plays. They and they bottled up Travis at the end.
That's you know that he was playing you didn't do
a whole lot, meaning because that defensive line was dealing
and the very least the Irish put themselves in a
(56:02):
position now where if they go to the championship and
let's say they have a rematch against Clemson and Trevor
Lawrence is playing, and they lose funding some good fight,
now the argument can be made that, all right, Manson
and Notre Dame are in on a four best team theory.
In a season when you don't have you're not gonna
have a number two Big ten team, You're not gonna
(56:22):
have a team from the Big twelve. You're not gonna
have a team from the Pack twelve most likely. So
these two teams, this might be the first of two,
if maybe even three times that we see these two
teams plays this year. Pete, I don't know if something
you can answer, but is there any way you could
give perspective onto how challenging the Notre Dame job is
and what Brian Kelly is doing, because look, we understand
(56:44):
the history of it all. But what Arnie and I
were talking about was you can't get in a lot
of kids to school Notre Dame that you can at
Ohio State or Alabama or whatever. That's no disrespect to
those schools, but Notre Dame has such unique challenges and
I just don't think Brian Kelly gets an enough credit
for the job that he does, for how much, you know,
for what he is expected of him relative to everybody
(57:06):
else that he competes with a little bit. But you
do have the advantage is Notre Dame, and I know that,
you know, it's it's not the quite the same as
the men of a certain age who the idea of
going to Notre Dame is just something you know, a
whole other level. But it's still in an easy sell.
It's still an easy place to recruit. He's getting the guys,
he's getting the NFL talents. You know, it's I'll stay Thomson,
(57:32):
It's Alabama and once in a while you have an
LSU team. It just comes on the worldly last last year.
But really it's those other three programs and Notre Dame
has been able to at least be close, uh, but
you know they haven't been able to have the quite
the talent level to get over the top. Well, this
is the game where finally they look like they might
have the talent level where they obviously can compete. Uh
(57:56):
but can you do that for two games in the
college football playoffs? Who cares? They're enough to probably get
there again. And yeah, give you know, give Kelly Craddy
got into a college football playoffs, he got him to
a national championship game. And then you know, look they
just ran into Clemson and Alabama Bud saw. So he's
got the program probably right around there. But again, you know,
it's to be at that level where you're put your
(58:18):
winning a national championship. It's the top one of the
top three programs overall. But look how they doesn't win
a national championship in a while. You know, certainly it's
it's now, it's there for but just win now they've
got a playoff time or bus Pete stopped messing around Michigan.
(58:39):
Oh my goodness. First of all, Indiana is a good team.
But now we saw that Michigan stayed lost by a
million to Iowa and Michigan State beat Michigan. I guess
Michigan is now the patsy of the Big Ten. What
is going on? I said they were gonna win four games.
They're not even gonna get the four wins. Michigan if
Michigan is the PATHI of the big ten and ten
(58:59):
stay holding it's beer and three. I mean this is
this has been. I have never seen a day of
hot seat coaching problems like today where look for about
fifty seven minutes Clay Helton was done at USC and
then that miracle come back, you know, Jeremy Prude to
(59:20):
Tennessee twenty four points in the in the third quarter,
the offense fails, they lose to Arkansas, Real must champ
in South Carolina get trucked by uh Texas A and
M today. You know, Chip Kelly, that thing just I
didn't see the final score, but last I check there
or not doing well. Uh So there are a whole
lot of big yeah. So there are a whole lot
(59:40):
of big name coaches out there who are struggling. Look
when it comes to Harbor, when it comes like James Franklin,
for example, if they've I keep saying, the Michigan and
now pent State fans, if you want them gone, what's
your answer, Because it's not like Ohio State's gonna quit
playing college football. And I get it. You want more
out of these guys. You want them to know to
(01:00:02):
win on a regular basis, and you can never, ever, ever,
ever ever lose as a big time college football and coach.
But I'm there's a certain team in Dallas, Texas that
I think would have more We have an interest in
Mr Harbaugh if he were to become available, and there's
certainly about a hundred other teams out there that would
take Harball on the heartbeat right now. And so it's look,
(01:00:24):
but this is rough. You can't have this type of
start to a season, you know, even in a crazy
year like this one. When, by the way, when do
you sign him? When is he gonna be at the
last year of his contract? Do you give him a
contract extension after this three win season they have or
what do you do? It's so hard again, you know,
what do you do? And look, you we're not talking
about with with a guy who for some reason has
(01:00:47):
escaped all criticism. What about Scott Frost? Like hardball, hardball
has been good. I mean his program has been, you know,
very very good. It's hasn't been Ohio State's name with
Penn State. Scott Frost has been that Nebraska program is
a disaster compared to what it should be. And he
(01:01:09):
gets he doesn't get talked about at all, and I
don't know why. I mean's a good dude and you
want to work out for him, But that team just
lost in Northwestern. It's oh and two, and it's another
potentially lost year unless they start to catch fire in
a hurry. Pete, you mentioned um all the guys that
(01:01:30):
struggle today coaching wise, and there's been this narrative that
you can't fire people in a pandemic, and we all
get why. But you know, these athletic departments are losing
money over hand and fist, do you get the sense
that one their job is more precarious than the others.
I know it's early, but is there anyone that you
really feel like that guy really might not be back
next season? Uh, will must champ. But again he's got
(01:01:53):
kind of a contract issue as well. But you're you're
dead on right. Part of the problem is in a pandemic,
you can't have bad paper the time when you're cutting
your other sports programs left and right. Look, I'm a
anti non revenue sport right, so I have no real
issues with anybody cutting other sports. But look, some of
these places are cutting programs that do make money. Look,
they the clet Clemson just whacked its track team and
(01:02:16):
they actually are relatively profitable and they actually do alright
making their own mince. So uh, it's but it's a
bad look if you're trying to cut a coach and
then give him a gazillion dollars a buyout money, which look,
it's in the contract they negotiated it. Uh, it's a
bad lak to do that. And then then who are
you gonna get. You're not gonna get somebody at Michigan
(01:02:37):
or Penn State or one of these places. And just
for you know, bargain basement frights, you're gonna have to
pay that guy, you know, the five pluts million to
seven walking the door. You know, what are you gonna
do with that? Again during a pandemic? The the optics
of it in terms of athletic department budgets and these
crazy wacky salaries just doesn't look all that good. Beat
(01:02:59):
last before we let you go, Since well Georgia got quavered,
so Cincinnati A and m Florida or b y U
or Wisconsin with their big victory, were there one victory
who's waiting in line to move up into that top four?
Who's more deserving out of that group to move up
into that top four. If an opening happens, well it's
(01:03:20):
a nobody right now. You you still have the big three.
You still I mean when Clemson gets healthy again. I mean,
LA was great tonight against Notre Dame, but that defense
was banged up. There's no excuses. Though they still should
have won that game. But still it's Alabama, House State, Clemson,
and now look Notre Dames right there, FORLDA is in
that mix. Ford is the one team out there that
(01:03:41):
outside of that top four, that controls its own destiny
because even with their one loss, if they win out
there absolutely in the college football playoffs at this point. Uh.
But even if they get there, if they get to
the SEC Championship and they lose uh to Alabama. If
Texas A and M wins out, they're nine and one
with their only loss coming to Alabama on the road
(01:04:04):
and they beat Florida. So at nine and one, Texas
and them would least be right on the doorstep there,
I will believe. By you know, they don't have the schedule,
they just have not played anybody, even Boise State. They're
missing their entire offensive backfield. Cincinnati has got a better case,
but again they don't have any wins. How about the
Liberty flames and look, I know they're a weird there's
(01:04:31):
a whole lot of issues with Liberty in general. But look,
unlike B y U and Cincinnati, they got to a
CEC wins. They just beat a Virginia Tech team that's
probably fourth or fifth best team in the a c C.
You know, that's the other teams don't have one of those. Look,
that's that's one of those teams are not gonna get
in the playoffs thing. But how about the New Year's
(01:04:51):
six games where now all of a sudden, you've got
all these teams that look close. But wait before we
go crazy here, Cincinnati is still gonna play UCF. They
still have a couple of interesting games to go. Uh
you still have San Diego State, who I know lost
last night, but it's still a pretty good team for
B y U. Uh So, I don't think these teams
are going to get in the playoffs, but they're at
(01:05:12):
least going to be in a conversation if they're going
to feed it. He's Pete few Tech. You could tweet
him at Pete few Tech, f I U T A
K or you could reach into College Football News College
Football News dot com. Pete, always a pleasure, my friend.
Enjoy the late games in the pack twelve, my friend,
and we do get tack twelve after dark in the
Hawaii game. It's college football season. Yeah, that's what I said,
(01:05:34):
Thank you, Pete. Pete futech college Football News dot com.
How do you get to a week nine of the NFL?
I know this, We'll do that when we get back.
First though, let's see what's trending, whether our buddy Steve
to say you're what's going on? To say good evening again,
he mentioned six ranks Cincinnati. The Bearcats are six and oh.
Their last four games coming up against East Carolina. You
(01:05:56):
CEF Temple and then Tulsa, which is three and oh
in the America Conference, and I repeat. As far as Liberty,
which was ranked before at one. Today Liberty does still
play at NC State and at number fifteen ranked Coastal Carolina.
As far as n C State, we mentioned how the
state of North Carolina has just seven percent capacity allowed
(01:06:16):
for the big stadiums currently. NC State had the game
last night where they nearly upset Miami that was seven
percent capacity. Attendance was four thousand for the North Carolina
State game last night. So for a larger stadium, you
know the Carolina Panther Stadium that gets used for the
A C C title, that would be a capacity of
five thousand to fifty unless they changed the rules before
(01:06:38):
next month, so you could have you could have two
classic Notre Dame Clemson games this season, the double overtime
game tonight with only ten thousand people at Notre Dame
Stadium and maybe about five thousand for an AC title rematch.
The way things are going, it was double overtime in
South Bend. Notre Dame beat number one Clemson forty forty,
the Irish seven and oh This year ki In Williams
(01:07:00):
twenty three carries a hundred forty yards and three touchdowns,
two of them in overtime. Number three Ohio State forty
seven over Rutgers. The Buckers. Buck guys led at halftime
thirty five to three. Florida beat Georgia and Jacksonville forty
four to twenty eight. Bulldogs actually led ten nothing early,
got a touchdown on the first play, a seventy five
yard run that was their highlight. Number six Cincinnati thirty
(01:07:23):
eight ten over Houston Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ritter three touchdown runs.
In fact, he had twelve carries a hundred three yards.
Number seven Texas A and M one forty eight three
at South Carolina quarterback Kellen mon five total touchdowns. Number
twelve Oregon finally got a season underway, beating Stanford thirty
five fourteen. Stanford had ten penalties. Stanford was missing quarterback
(01:07:45):
Davis Mills due to COVID protocols. Wide receiver Connor Weddington
was also out, and Stanford's kicker went over four on
field goal attempts. WOW Number thirteen Indiana beat Michigan thirty one.
Fourteen ranked Oklahoma State s vibed at Kansas State eighteen.
Case State missed a late two point pass wins for
Coastal Carolina and Marshall, Iowa State with a comeback win.
(01:08:08):
Victories for SMU and Oklahoma USC with too late touchdown
passes open the Pack twelve season with seven decision over
Arizona State. Each Pack twelve team was due to play
seven games this year. Conference championship to be held the
week before Christmas on Fox TV, But of course not
everyone's gonna be playing seven because Arizona's game against Utah
(01:08:29):
was canceled. Cal's opener against Washington was canceled. By the Way.
Wisconsin did not play again. They were due to host
a perdue canceled next Saturday night. It's due to be
Wisconsin at Michigan. We'll see air Force against Army was
postponed due to COVID issues. Navy against Tulsa as well.
Utah State at oh and Three parted ways with coach
Gary Anderson. By the Way, Liberty and Texas got wins
(01:08:52):
Maryland as well, winning at Penn State. The Baltimore Ravens
activated wide receiver Dez Bryant Authentic won the Breeders Cup Classic,
going wire to wire. He was the Kentucky Derby champion.
Authentics won five of his seven starts this year. Improbable
finished second today. Sam Burns from lf who leads the
Houston opened by one stroke. Jason Days tied for second.
Dustin Johnson has three shots back. That tournament at the
(01:09:14):
Public Memorial Park is the first domestic PGA Tour event
to have fans since March. Tickets are capped at two
thousand per day in Houston this weekend, Austin Cindric took
NASCAR's Axfinity title, and Dodgers first base coach George Lombard
is leaving to become bench coach with Detroit. Back to you,
all right, thanks the Sager. Welcome back to the Fox
Sports radio studios. It's all brought to you by Geico.
(01:09:37):
It's also easy to say fifteen percent of more in
car insurance with Geico. Go to Geico dot com or
give them a call one nine for seven Auto. The
only hard part figuring out which way is easier. He's
Aaron Torres, a Marty Spaniard. You could jump on in
and air it under score Torres. I'm a stinking genius. One. Guys,
give us a little music. Put us in the mood,
(01:09:58):
because one day, as we head into week nine, I
know this, I'll start things off Torres and say this, Nope,
can't do it. I can't win with him, can't do it.
I only need to see one game to know it's
not gonna work out with two. Uh WHOA. Let me
(01:10:20):
explain something to you. It's like a blind date and
then you show up at the date and you're like, oh, oh,
I I didn't think that was you by the picture
you sent me. But you sit down anyway and you
find out she's like laughing like he he. That's when
(01:10:40):
you accidentally or on purposely spilled spaghetti on your shirt,
go to the bathroom, give the waiter two to pay
for the meal, and go out the back door and
never come. I don't ever see that. I don't need
to see two again. That's it. I'm done with him.
That's all I need to sees one game. It's like
(01:11:01):
a bad blind date. I don't need to see two again.
I know that heading in the week nine, he's just
not going to work out. Uh didn't you meet your
wife on a blind date? Yes? I did? How does
she laugh again? Ha ha ha? So basically you you
just analogize your wife to to Ah. Yet you're still
(01:11:22):
married to her. So calmed down. Okay, twenty years from now,
Too is still gonna be the quarterback of the Dolphins,
just like you and your wife. Um, I listen, I'll
say this about to didn't look too sharp, No ninety
three yards and what I'll say that, I don't think
anybody's talked about like and and guys talked about it
(01:11:43):
this week, But leading up to last week, he had
a lot of talent around him at Alabama, and I
did kind of question was he that good or it's
just the talent at Alabama that good? Because Matt Jones
has stepped in and Alabama has not missed a beat
without two. Uh, so I could see the scenario. I'm
not ready to spill ketchup sauce on myself like you are,
(01:12:04):
but not out the back door. Tell me you've never
done that before. Oh tell the young lady. I had
an emergency. I'm gonna go out the back door. Here's
two d keep the rest for yourself. I can honestly
say I've never done that because I've never done that either,
but I've always wanted to. Yeah, what I would just
do is just pound some drinks and and make make
the most out of the night. Anyway, We're headed to
week nine and I know this your Arnie Spaniards. Super Bowl.
(01:12:29):
Dallas Cowboys are how about this? By far the worst
team in the NFC East, in the worst division in football. Uh,
they obviously get smoked by the Eagles. Your boy the news, Uh,
you know he's gonna be parking cars the rest of
his life because that career is over. But even the
New York Football Giants aren'tis other team. Their last three
(01:12:52):
losses have been by a combined six points. The Giants
are at least playing hard. The Washington football team I
almost called them the R word is showing the progress.
The Eagles I'm out on. But the Eagles just smoked
the Cowboys. The Cowboys are not only bad, they are
by far the worst team in the worst division in football.
(01:13:13):
Torres heading in the Week nine, I know this. Let's
go Jaguars. Let's go Jaguars. Now you're you're laughing. I
hear you laughing. That's why Jaguars. Okay, that's my Jack.
You're wondering why that's my Jaguars, don't you very much? So? Yes,
they're playing the Texans. Both teams won in six. Jaguars
(01:13:36):
win the game. They not only have a one game
lead on the Texans, they get the tiebreaker, which means
the Texans come closer to that number one pick overall,
which the Dolphins own, and we'll take Trevor never Let's
go Jaguars. Let's go. Jaguars lose Texans. If the Jets
weren't so stinking bad, the Texans might have the number
(01:13:58):
one pick over all, which a Dolphins owned. I know this.
I'm ready to do it. Arizona, Goodbye Josh Rosen, goodbye
to uh hello, Trevor, thank you very much. Ironically, Josh
Rosen ended up in Miami after Arizona. So how about that?
What do we got here? We're headed into weeks seven, nine, four, three, whatever,
(01:14:20):
and I know this? Uh what do I know? I
don't know. I'm just much I'm trying to think. I'm
trying to think. I had some notes written down. I'll
tell you this. I think the Buffalo Bills are headed
in the absolute wrong direction. I know they won last week,
but it was ugly. I am just underwhelmed by this team.
It feels like they're going in the wrong direction. You
(01:14:41):
start to look at their wins. They got two over
the Jets, Fluke win over the Rams, they beat the
Dolphins with fits magic. I'm not saying they're gonna fall
apart in this division, but they are far from contender status. Sorry,
Eric Roberts, I'm second. All right, I'm gonna give you
one more before we go ahead and get ready for
the SEGA next segment. Heading into week nine, I know this,
the New York Jets will get their first win this weekend,
(01:15:06):
well technically on Monday when they play Monday Night Football
at home against the New England Patriots. Um, the Patriots
are worse than that two and five record you left
at all my predictions you left at my Michigan prediction
last week, And who was right about that? Tam Darnald
not playing? We here, so I'm assuming it's going to
(01:15:27):
be flat. Oh but that doesn't matter, flat, oh, Sam Darnald.
Jets know that this is the best chance they have
to get for victory. Patriots are a ted Board favorite,
like not at half j E t s Jets, Jets, Jets.
That's what we know heading into Week nine of the NFL.
Where we get back though, we'll talk to Steve the
(01:15:49):
Sager pick up some of the news and notes and
stories that we haven't gotten to. That's coming up next
right here on Fox Sports our Radio. Oh yeah, now
we're rocking. Who is this whole notes? Hollow notes? Baby?
Is that I don't even know? Welcome back to the
Fox Sports Radio studios. This segment brought to you my
(01:16:09):
Geico as we check in with Steve the Sacred. Let
me tell you something, Torres, I want to tell you
why I love the Sagas so much more than I
like you. I want you to know this, Wow, because
when I come in next month into l A, the
Sager is putting me up in and putting me up
in his apartment for the entire for an entire week.
(01:16:29):
And that's awfully nice of him. You don't even tell
me you're coming to l A. Are you really coming
to l A. Let's just say that hasn't been done before,
and this year it certainly will not be done. Wow.
I take everything I said back then. I don't like him.
There are fewer people in the office these days, so
I'm sure you could find a cot and some space there. Wow.
(01:16:51):
Just a recommendation. It'll keep you close to the studio
and the microphone. Thank you very much for that. Hey,
I'm happy to help, but recommendation, I highly recommend. We
do have a couple of college football games still going,
and that's great to say. On our late Saturday night
show on FS one, they started the second half Washington
State up fourteen seven at Oregon State and the game
at Hawaii's at halftime, New Mexico leads to fourteen at Hawaii.
(01:17:13):
Will get to next Saturday night in a moment. But
there was the Thursday night football game on Fox a
couple of nights ago, and it was a blowout with
the Packers ripping whatever is left of the forty. It's
still got over thirteen million viewers. In other words, it
averaged more viewers than any non NFL sporting event since January.
Because remember we mentioned last weekend, the only two non
(01:17:36):
NFL items that have gotten over ten million viewers were
the last two World Series games Dodgers and Rays. The
clincher got twelve point six million. Thursday Night football thirteen
point two million. The NFL is still king. And that
was opposite all the cable news and regular channels news
coverage this week, which of course has been going great
guns for obvious reasons. Yeah, that's some things we're going
(01:17:59):
up as they move Clemson Notre Dame to USA Network
for half an hour tonight. Uh, the three big cable
news networks opposite the football Thursday night combined to average
seventeen million viewers. You know, I was about to say
something about that. Um, today's game, is there a chance
that could be one of the most watched games other
(01:18:20):
than the Super Bowl because of coming over after listening
to Joe Biden speak the president. Um, people stuck with
the network, and then NBC came back with noted, it's
got to be at one point the most watched football
game other than the super Bowl. But when it's not
gonna get bigger ratings than Sunday NFL even with everybody
(01:18:40):
listening to the president. Huh No, I'm sure the news stuff,
but not everybody was tuning NBC for that. They had
Fox News for all those things. So what we have
on Fox for the Thursday night football game NFL this
next week is a good matchup the Colts currently five
and two at the Titans currently five and two and
again Titans tnmebacker Jadeveon Clowney with his knee injury, unlikely
(01:19:02):
to play tomorrow against the Bears and may need surgery
according to NFL Network. As far as FS one, there's
college football again next week on Thursday and Friday, as
well as Saturday night. The Thursday night matchup is Boise
State hosting Colorado State. Double head. State only play on Thursdays,
right every yea hey, whatever TV gig that could get well,
MAC is only Tuesdays and Wednesdays this year, which is
(01:19:25):
awesome By the way, because yeah, the mac's gonna have
I think they had six on one day this past
week to open, and then it's gonna be three Tuesday,
three Wednesday this coming week for the MAC Conference. The
FS one doublehead or Friday Night will start off with
Iowa at Minnesota and Iowa did win big as you
reference seven over Michigan State today and then the late
(01:19:45):
game Friday night FS one Utah at u c l A.
Utah did not get to play its opener against a Yeah,
for not playing, u c l A lost its opener
two to Colorado. Is Chip Kelly continues to catch the checks,
and FS one will have Mountain West football. The times
(01:20:06):
are not out, we assume it's a Mountain West game
during our time slot late next Saturday night. Might even
be San Jose State, which has had a good start.
To say, you're more overpaid Chip Kelly or Arnie Spanier, Wow,
well we know Chip kelly salary, so I'll go with that.
That's that's over a twenty million dollar contract for doing
what exactly? What did you c l A football bean
(01:20:27):
the last five years? I mean, Arnie did pick the
Cowboys go to the Super Bowl. I want you to
remember I changed that after a Pickchan is the number
four team in the country. We fired you last week.
By the way, to Sager, I will say, you know,
you know there was a lot made today about the
Carl Durrell, the Colorado coach, former U c l A
coach in the grand scheme of things. I went back
(01:20:47):
and looked at Carl Durrell not as terrible relative to
what U c l A has been since then as
you think. I think five years, five bowl games now
we never got more than seven us see kind of
sticks in the girl. Yeah, I just think relative to
what U c l A is now, maybe he wasn't
quite as bad. In Hindson. I repeat the last five years,
(01:21:08):
and I mean this is this might be the fifth
consecutive year under five hundred for U c l A football.
And you know how us, not just U c l A.
Everybody schedule in college football has at least two three patsy's.
How do you not finish five hundred if you're even
something of a decent U c l A is the patsy.
That's the problem we do. Have you mentioned Dallas the
update The Cowboys will start quarterback Garrett Gilbert against the
(01:21:30):
Steelers tomorrow, I'll talk about what's gonna get good ratings.
Even though the Cowboys stink, it's still called Steelers. Cowboys.
Guarantee you people will be watching. So that will be
his first NFL start. He was drafted six years ago,
and quarterback Cooper Rush was activated. All right, thanks for
what the sager two hours or in the books to
power our coming up next, we'll come back get in
the week nine. Bertie Frattle, straight out of Vegas, will
(01:21:52):
join us at about twenty past the hour. Uh you
know how to get on in coming up next year
at Fox Sports or radio. Uh, good evening everyone, as
we're coming to you alive from the Fox Sports Radio
studios and it's all brought to you by Geico. Fifteen
minutes can save you fifteen cent of more in car
(01:22:13):
in church visit guy? Could I come for a free rate?
Quote Bertie Fratto at about twenty past the hour, straight
out of Vegas. What is Vegas saying about the college
games today? More important, what is Vegas saying about Week
nine of the NFL. Bernie's gonna let us know that's
coming up in a twenty past the hour. We got
a little Dez Brian talk him talk obviously about week
nine or picks are coming up in about forty five
(01:22:35):
past the hour Torres, so we definitely have to get
ready for that. A b Is going to make his
return before you even get in the week nine. People
commenting about what I said about Tah, like Matt says,
I just lost all the respect I didn't have for
Artie's opinions. Wow, one game, Come on, Artie, even you
(01:22:57):
are better than that. And never talking about my cowboys again. Please.
You know what's amazing about your to A take is
that you were taken for Twoah before anyone knew it.
Taken for Tuah was then the team was good, and
then you were not good. But they won a couple
of games. They end up with the fifth pick, and
you're over the moon that he falls to you. You wait,
(01:23:17):
you disagree with me last week that they should have
pulled Ryan Fitzpatrick. I thought, you keep playing him, if
he's playing well, give to a more time, and now
you give up after him on four quarters. Unbelievable. You're fire.
You know who you are? Do you know? Handsome? Charming?
What the opposite of you? Basically, you're like that girl
that wants to break up with her boyfriend, but says,
(01:23:40):
I don't want to do it just yet. I've got
Christmas coming up in Valence Sides Day, so I'll do
it after Valid Sides Day. You know what you are.
You're the guy that goes out on the first date
and you say, oh, her hair is too blond. Uh.
I think one of her legs is longer than the other. Um,
I don't like the fact that she uh whatever. You're
(01:24:03):
the guy that finds an excuse for everybody. You're looking
for Miss perfect or Mr Perfect in your quarterback. He
doesn't exist, Okay, Patrick Mahomes ain't walking through that door
Arnie Spending. Even if he did, he's not bringing Andy
Read with him. I don't need to wait any longer. Like,
all right, I'll put you on the spot. I hope.
I hope your wife is listening right now. She's definitely when.
(01:24:23):
I hope she is. Because when you first met her,
tell me it wasn't loved first sight. Tell me, when
you first met her, you knew it wasn't the girl
that you were going to spend the rest of your
life with. It just took you five minutes. I've done
my five minutes with to uh. I don't want to
spend the rest of my wife with two. I've got
to move on. First of all, I will say that
(01:24:43):
I was really drunk when I met my wife. I
do remember waking up the next day and being like, Wow,
I think I had a really good conversation with that girl.
I can't really remember. Talk to me. I better marry her.
WHOA shots fired? But Arnie, you're come on now. You
live through the Tyler Thigpen era. Yes, you live through
(01:25:04):
the Matt Moore era. Yes, you live through uh, Jay Cutler,
Dante Culpepper, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Joey Harrington, Chad Henny, Damon Hewart,
Damon Hewart, Arnie, And now you're giving up a two
after you want to go back to Damon Hewart. You
want to get him on the phone. I don't do
(01:25:25):
him much right now. But but you know what, Aaron
do how much time? Um? You know? Because people like
you're gonna do it after one game? Well, um, the
shows today, so yes, we're gonna do it after one game. Now,
if I can call or Boston say you know what, um,
can you give me the next three to four years
off with pay? Of course? Um, and that way I
can come back on the air and have a better
(01:25:46):
uh feel on what two is doing, and then I
could probably give a more educated pick. But since the
Shows today anyway has one game under his belt, I
gotta give his opinion. That's like you're saying, well, I
can't tell you what's going on, uh with the Dolphins
because they've only played eight games. Get back to me
when the you know, when they played fifteen games. I
(01:26:07):
have a better feel and what they're gonna be like, Well,
the shows today and to what it looked very good
ninety three yards. A matter of fact, I'll tell you
right now on my picks, I've been a million dollars
on the Arizona Cardinals, a million dollars. Look Anna, shellack
my Dolphins tomorrow. Shellack them. Let me ask you a question.
You've had a lot of stops in your career. Where
were you Do you remember where you were in the
(01:26:29):
fall of I don't have a clue. Okay. The reason
I asked because there was a rookie quarterback that year
named Peyton Manning who went three and thirteen, twenty eight interceptions,
fifty six percent completion and I guarantee for seventeen straight weeks.
Oh my god, he's terrible. They should have drafted Ryan
They even one in fifteen his first year. They should
(01:26:51):
have drafted Ryan Leaf. What were they doing? Cults franchises
do forever. That's what you were saying in the Fall
of nine. Was that a good impression? Um? You know,
even though Aikman was one in fifteen, you saw there
was a lot of garbage around him. Sure there was
guys that start off bad. Dan Marino, I don't think
(01:27:12):
start off with a good career. But the guys you're naming,
we're going back with twenty something years ago. Well, you've
seen Joe Burrow now, you've only seen him for a
handful of games. You love him. You've seen one. I
don't know if I loved him. How many games have
you seen justin Herbert? You love him? Come on, now,
you've only seen him for a handful of games. So
(01:27:34):
cut the Bologney Torres. You know you love all these
other quarterbacks and they would. You could love him after
six seven games, but you can't hate somebody after one.
Let's let's get with it. You can't go for ninety
three yards. Yeah, he's we'll see what he puts up
against the Cardinals, but the Cardinals have a great offense.
They may lose by three touchdowns if he can't keep
(01:27:55):
up with them. Joe Burrow twenty three of thirty six
a hundred ninety three yards, no touchdowns, one interception, Bengals
lose their opener to the Chargers. I remember you coming
on the next week and saying, Joe Burrow, he's gotta go.
So I didn't say that. That's what I'm saying. Yeah,
he was pretty bad as opener too. He was pretty
(01:28:15):
for more than ninety three yards. You are you are
you trying to say that you feel good about two
that matter of fact? Let me read you another one. Um.
That's coming in of course on Twitter if you want
to get an Airrand Underscore tours. I'm just thinking genius one, guys.
This is from truck or Joe. Guys, it's Alabama. I
told you guys last year that he wasn't gonna do
anything in the NFL because he's an Alabama quarterback. Name
(01:28:38):
a quarterback from Alabama that's done anything in the last
twenty years. Oh wait, um, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, But
he did Smith. He did say twenty years. He did
say the last twenty years. Have I said Joe Namath.
What's Shoe Nameth done the last twenty years besides uh
sexually harassed Susie Colber anything. Yeah, but I'm I'm work
(01:29:00):
with me a little bit. I mean, that's that's ken
Stable where Joe Nameeth. Yeah, I get Listen if I
mentioned Joe Namath, listen, I get it. I get it.
I I think it's a little presumptuous. And I don't
think you can compare the guys that have come out
of Alabama since uh Saban got there because none of
them were is highly ranked, none of them were NFL
(01:29:21):
caliber quarterbacks a J. Mccarin even then, he was more
of a system quarterback. If you want to argue that
Joe Burrow is better or uh Justin Herbert is better,
I'm not gonna argue. I'm just not saying I don't
think you should completely give up on him after one game. Heck,
I'll take it a step further. I won't even argue
(01:29:41):
that if the Texans end up with the number one
pick that goes to the Dolphins, that you shouldn't seriously
consider Trevor Lawrence. I'm just saying, don't give up on
two after one game? How many games do you want
if I gave you an ultimate or just say, you
know what, how many games would you like to go
ahead and evaluate a quarterback? How many would you say
to me, I need more than one? I know that,
(01:30:04):
I know that I'm just not well, how many do
you need? Do you tell me? I'm just trying to
think a year, two years, three years? How many you need? Well,
here's the problem, right, is that some guys come come
out lights out there first year, like a Baker Mayfield.
And now I think we're getting more and more into
the Baker Mayfield experience, and we're thinking he might not
be the guy. Jimmy g was good early on, Josh
(01:30:26):
Allen was good, you know, has looked good for moments in.
Carson Wentz looks disgusting. How many you need? How many
you need? I think it's the opposite. So so here,
now this isn't actually an interesting You actually led us
to an interesting point, which is, at least Carson Wentz
(01:30:46):
and at least the other guys that I mentioned. Who
else did I mentioned Carson Wentz? Um? I can't remember.
At least they showed Danny Dimes. Remember the first day
at Danny Dimes in Tampa. At least they showed flashes
at the beginning. And now the argument, maybe the best
argument you have for Twah is that he didn't even
look good at the start when nobody had any film
(01:31:07):
on him or anything. I think that's a strong argument,
and just flat out given up on him after one
year after one game. My point was that you're you're
giving me grief after one game? What do you think
the Dolphins are doing. They're judging his future based on
that one game and another one, eight or nine more
and that's it, because then they're gonna have to decide
do they want to keep ta, do they want to
(01:31:27):
drift fields, or if they're looking enough, do they take
Trevor Lawrence? And I promise you this, If the Texans
have the number one pick, the Dolphins are taking Trevor Lawrence.
You know that, don't you. I think they should seriously
consider what if two was awesome? If the Dolphins have
the number one pick in the draft, they're taking Trevor Lawrence?
Did I stutter? Am I stuttering? Right now? So the
(01:31:49):
Dolphins right now are four and three? What if they
finish eleven and five and get a wild card. You're
still taking Trevor Lawrence number one pick in the draft.
The Dolphins are on the clock. They select Trevor Lawrence. Okay,
you're you've you've drawn the line in the sand. You
(01:32:09):
of course I have. Yes, we're taking Drevor Lawrence. Okay,
that's where you stand. I don't know if that's where
I stand. I need to say. I need to see
more than i'll get. I'll be lucky to get a
first round draft pick for two. You're crazy, man? Why
am I crazy? Because we have got to make it.
You said the same thing about the Cardinals probably when
(01:32:30):
they got rid of Josh Rosen. No, I didn't well,
I thought, I just thought Kyler Murray shouldn't have played,
shouldn't have played football, which was obviously the wrong answer there. Um,
I just I need more than four quarters, aren't he?
That's that's what all. That's all I'm but Joey're gonna
get nine games. You have only nine games. You have
the rest of this year to make up your mind.
That's it. Okay, you don't have a choice. Counter to this,
(01:32:51):
they don't get the number one pick. The Texans go
six and twelve. That's probably a little unrealistic at this
first not a team games for all, Um, I would say,
I would say three wins, three to four wins. While
you canna say they're gonna be outside the top five.
I was gonna say, if the quarterback is not named
(01:33:11):
Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields, are you still trying to
find a quarterback? Are you rolling with two? Let me
tell you the problem with that, because, um, let's say
the Texans finish the number two, you can still get Fields.
Let's say the Texans finished in the top five and
the Dolphins are in the top fifteen. Now the Dolphins
have the top five, top fifteen, and then in the
(01:33:31):
second round they have the Texans number one pick again,
which would be another top five pick, and their own
pick again in the top fifteen. Who wants some picks
because we want that quarterback. And if someone like maybe
the Giants get the number one pick or the number
two pick, they could trade it is they're gonna keep
Daniel Jones. Not everybody's gonna go in select the quarterback.
If the Bengals are one of the worst, they go
(01:33:53):
ahead and trade it because they have their quarterback in borrow.
If the Texans finished with the top two picks they
traded because they got the Shawn Watson. So Jacksonville keeps
it because they'll move on from Gardner Minshew. So it
depends who gets that passed. So you've seen enough from
Daniel Jones to convince you that he needs more time.
But you've seen one game. No, I don't like Daniel Jones.
(01:34:15):
I'm done with him. I'm done with I wouldn't keep
him if I if I'm the Giants, uh and I
I like the Giants. But if I'm the Giants, um,
you get the first two picks. Goodbye, Danny Dimes. I'll
drive you to the airport myself. Danny Nichols is what
I told you. I never liked him from the beginning. No, really,
I'm sure we could find some film. No, No, I'm
(01:34:36):
being I and I said before this year. This is
that he's I didn't like him from game one, even
though he looked good early, as you mentioned. And I
don't like him now. I don't think that he's I
think maybe in a different franchise, UM, a different situation,
maybe he could excel a lot more. But now the
way the giants are a mess. He's got to go
(01:34:56):
somewhere else. They've got to rebuild, and he's he's not
gonna be the answer there. All right. Uh, if you
want to go ahead and jump on in, erin on
the score, Torres, I'm it's think of genius one. When
we get back straight out of Vegas, Bernie Fratto stops
on by. What is Vegas saying about the college games?
Who do they like in week nine? Which way are
the game's trending? Who's done well and not so well
(01:35:19):
against the spread. We're gonna get to all that next
right here on Fox Sports or Radio. All right, welcome
back to the Fox Sports Radio studios. This segment brought
to you by Geico. So just flying on Bibe. We'll
get our picks coming up in about forty five past
the hour. Let's get right to our guests joining us now.
(01:35:43):
He comes up at the top of the hour. It's
a muscle. Listen to Straight out of Vegas. It's our buddy,
Bertie Fratto. How you doing, Bernie? You know, guys, there's
an old proverb that says me, you live in interesting times.
I'm walking up to a cacito today and I see
a gout front and down on his luck. He said, hey, buddy,
could have ten bucks for some food, And I said, well,
I'm inclined to give it to you, but how do
(01:36:03):
I know you're not gonna take it inside and gamble
it away? He said, oh no, no, don't worry. Already
got gambling money. Uh he's here all week trying to
be like like that Berdie. Wait, what did you think
of the clips of jav game? If you had some money?
L Davie did pretty well? Uh, you did pretty well.
I did not bet that game. Um, I don't want
(01:36:24):
to play a game with a backup quarterback in a
highly charged game of that situation. But yeah, given ord
Dame credit, they did what they needed to do. You
can say they were home and it was against Clemson's uh,
you know, backup quarterback. At the end of the year,
when it comes to wins, they don't ask Kyle just
how many. Well, Burne, let's stay with college football for
a second. You could talk about the gambling implications, or
(01:36:46):
you could just talk about the real life implications. You
lived and worked in an arbor for years, and I
know you got opinions on Michigan. Bertie go ahead. Well,
as we talked a couple of weeks ago, I told
you that I thought Michigan was a three loss team,
and they're almost there. So the long and short of
it is this. Uh. And I also when we talked
earlier today, and I said I had a couple of
(01:37:06):
phone appointments with some people on the inside after the game.
Michigan's truly embarrassed. So, uh, I'm gonna follow this story.
I'm not gonna make any official comments tonight. They're not
gonna fire hardball in nor do I advocate that they're
gonna fire hardball. But I'll tell you what that extension
now looks like a bit of a pipe dream. Stay tuned.
I'll have all the inside for you as the season
goes on. Wow, look how serious he got there first. Like,
(01:37:30):
I love it. I love it all right, Bertie. Uh,
Week nine NFL Best and Worst against the spread after
halfway through the season. Yeah, it's interesting because obviously, uh,
you know, the Steelers who are undefeated, there's six and
one against the number. But a couple of teams who've
done real well that aren't necessarily you know, gonna go
be going to the playoffs. The Bengals with Joe Burrow
(01:37:51):
six and two against the number and the Chargers five
and two against the spread, and of course the least
profitable the Saints to A five, the Texans one and six,
the Jets one and seven. But uh, how about those
Dallas Cowboys oh and eight against the number. And there's
about six ways they can make history tomorrow when they're
(01:38:11):
at home against Pittsburgh, catching fourteen and a half points.
First time in the Cowboys history ever they've been a
double digit dog at home. No team in the NFL
has ever gone oh and nine against the spread. And
what's interesting the first nine weeks, so the Cowboys could
make history there, but since nine NFL teams with eight
(01:38:33):
or more straight A t S losses, which Dallas will
qualify for, they've actually gone eight against the number in
week nine eight two and one against the spread. Here's
here's the problem, though, They're going up against the team
that has uh that's undefeated. It's only happened once in
history where a team had eight straight A T S
(01:38:55):
losses and they're playing an undefeated team like pitt It happened.
So uh. In nine, Carolina was fourteen to no when
they were facing Atlanta which had lost eight straight against
the spread. Carolina was laying eight and a half that
day they won thirty eight to nothing. So I don't know,
fast is gonna have a pretty strong opinion on that
game in our B block tonight Dallas and UH in Pittsburgh.
(01:39:19):
But it's an interesting game from from his standpoint of
the historical perspective when it comes to betting against the spread.
So Burn, I wanna switch gears to the late night game.
Obviously everybody, it's the game everybody's talking about New Orleans
and Tampa. Obviously New Orleans took the Week one game.
A lot's changed since then. What do you see in
the big one on Sunday Night. I love Tampa in
(01:39:40):
this game, I really do. Since losing to New Orleans
Week one, they're six and one, that second best in
the NFL in terms of wins, their point differentials plus
ninety three, that's number one overall in the NFL. Their
turnover differential plus nine, number one in the NFL. When
they played the Saints back in Week one, no o
t a s no mini camp, no preseason games, and
(01:40:03):
you could say the same for the Saints. But Brady
was playing with a bunch of guys who only had
a chance to work with in the park. I like that.
I like Tampa Bay quite a bit. Tomorrow night, Bertie,
what is your top three picks for for tomorrow? Well,
I've actually got to this week, Arnie, because my my
top what we did a near shot, said, I loved
ie when minus six they took care of business today.
(01:40:23):
One of the games, one of the games I really allow.
But these are the two. I like. Buffalo heads to Seattle,
and I already played this game Wednesday and the total
was fifty three and a half, and I like the
over of fifty three and a half. Well, you can't
get that now it's up about fifty five goes above
fifty five, don't play it. But if you can get
a fifty five below played, I liked you over for
multiple reasons. First of all, the Seahawks still have the
(01:40:46):
worst rank defense in the league this season. They're surrendering
four hundred and sixty one yards a game and they're
being outyarded forty seven yards per contest. But they have
Russell Wilson, and so he's on a page to throw
for about fifty nine touchdowns. Buffalo's offense is good and
their defense actually metrically d v o A is down
last year, down from last year, so I think you're
(01:41:08):
gonna see nothing but points in this game. And also
not for nothing, sixty five degrees and sunny, almost perfect
conditions in Buffalo. So I like the Buffalo Seattle over
as long as it's fifty five or less. My favorite
player of the day. Look nothing against too, nothing against Miami.
I really like what Brian Flores is doing. They managed
to whopping one forty five total yards last week in
(01:41:30):
their win over the Rams. That is the lowest win yard.
You know, gaining yards in a game. That's terrible English.
That's the sounds like Arnie. It's okay, good night, folks.
Last time I ran a tongue from that place. A
hundred forty five yards of mass last week is the fuse.
Didn't win since Week fourteen of when actually it was
(01:41:53):
a Dolphins in as well. They got a hundred and
thirty one yards against the Jets. Can't blame that on too.
I think it's only about twelve years old the time.
But the bottom line is this. I really like Arizona
in this spot. They're coming off of by They've been
eight and no coming off of by during the regular
season when they're they're playing an opponent that's coming off
a win. And I think Miami is between traveling across
(01:42:15):
country and they've got two on film a little bit here,
they're gonna draw the Dolphins into a shootout. Dolphins just
aren't going to be able to keep up. And the
truth of the matter is Arizona's defense is a little
bit better. I think this is a double digit win
for Arizona. But I want to say one more thing
about the college game, because I disagree with you earlier, guest.
I think b y U merits attention and not only
passed the eye test, they've done it on the field. Yeah,
(01:42:36):
they haven't played the greatest schedule, but they've outscored their
their opponents by a cumulative two hundred and sixty one
points six points per game. And by the way, Aaron
I found out from Jake Cornygate today, this comes from
Jake corny Gate at the Westgate. It those a little
cold water on my theory that if they got on
the field in a neutral against Clemson B y you
(01:42:57):
would be a seventeen and a half point dog. If
they got on the field against Alabama in a neutral
they'd be a nineteen and a half point Doug. And
so it looks like Alabama, Clemson another Dame in Florida
are really, to me kind of your top four. But
there's still a long way to go in this season,
and this is one year let's bust up the party.
And you know, I'd like to see maybe Liberty get
(01:43:18):
a shot, but they'd have to jump too many spots.
The longer. The short of it is, let somebody from
the outside crash the party. Let's see what happens. Well,
And what I would say to that is, um, you know,
Texas A and M, for example, is five and one
there in the top ten. They lost by twenty eight
to Alabama. So like calling them, calling b y U
a nineteen and a half point underdog is not as
(01:43:39):
big of an insult as it sounds. How about this
Notre Dame was a touchdown underdog at home without Trevor Lawrence,
So what would that be on a neutral field. So
that's a good point. Go ahead, No nuts, I'm just
making your points for you. We're just we're just building
this B y U case together. Bernie that's also by you,
has got a culture in history too. I mean actually
want to. They beat Michigan and eighty four to win
(01:44:01):
the National Championship. They were twelve and oh look, you
can only ask him to play the team that gets
off the bus. When they really impressed me because they
went into Houston and beat him by seventeen. Houston's got athletes.
This isn't one of their best team, but they got
athletes who Bay has got a bunch of bruisers and
they can also make plays. The other thing, too, is
they tried to schedule aggressively on their original schedule. They've
(01:44:22):
had six or seven Power five teams, and obviously once
all these conferences went to league only, it kind of
screwed him. So Bernie last one for me. I did
want to go to the Monday night football game, and
not so much who's gonna Jets to Jets Patriots? But
the Patriots I feel like, and you can please correct
me if I'm wrong. But obviously, in the Brady Belichick
(01:44:44):
era were a very public team. I would assume are
they still? Do people still have faith in Bill Belichick
even as this team piles up losses? I don't think so,
because New England is other than the uniforms are not
the same. Yesterda laying a fairly heavy number at home.
Here you're laying more than a touchdown against the Jets.
(01:45:06):
But there are stats which you'll start to share with
you next week. When you get past the halfway point
and the team hasn't won a game yet, they start
to be, you know, very valuable. They're going to win
a game. I'm not necessarily saying that Jets are going
to win it tomorrow, but I think there's real value
on the Jets getting north to seven points here. You're
gonna get an effort. It's a divisional game, and New
England has shown me nothing in the semblance of an offense.
(01:45:28):
I even said it after the first couple of weeks,
this just isn't sustainable. Or Cam drops back, looks around,
and it just runs around in circles until he gets tackled.
That's not a Bill Belichick offense. So I think to
your point, no, New England is not the darling. They
were not by a long shot. And and and you've
got a divisional game tomorrow against the Jets. One last thing,
this is right up Arney's alley. Because Pittsburgh, now that
(01:45:50):
they went to seven and oh. William Hill put up
a prop this week that if they go sixteen and
know you can get Pittsburgh at ten to one, to
go sixteen and o and they're almost halfway home. Wow,
Ted the one. Huh. You know I love those long
shots out there. All right. Bernie Frattle straight out of
Vegas coming up at the top of the hour, must
listen to as they take look at week nine of
(01:46:12):
the NFL and of course physic will stop on by.
Appreciated Bernie. Okay, thanks you guys, appreciate it. Thank you,
Bernie Frattle. Everybody, you gotta check it out. Coming up
at the top of the hour, we'll talk more about
week nine. Des is coming back, Antonio uh, Brown's coming back.
We'll talk about all that. That's next. First, though, let's
see what's trending with her body, the saga what's going
on to Well, Clemson won't be number one anymore. They
(01:46:34):
came in with a seven and oh record, but lost
in South Bend in double overtime at undefeated Notre Dame
forty seven forty. It's Clemson's first regular season lost in
about three years. They've gone thirty nine straight regular season wins,
including conference title games and the freshman quarterback was great. Yeah,
Trevor Lawrence was out again, but d j o l
(01:46:54):
four hundred thirty nine yards passing and three total touchdowns.
But on the ground Travis a C t N eight
teen carries twenty eight yards, He had one touchdown one fumble,
did have eight catches. But the running back for the
Irish was better Kyra and Williams a hundred forty yards,
three touchdowns, two of the tds in overtime. Clemson's margin
in first place votes in the last eight peopole was
(01:47:16):
only thirty three to twenty nine over Alabama, which was
idle tonight. The rankings for the college football playoffs start
November seventeenth, ten days away. Selection Sunday will be December twenty.
Number three Ohio State got five touchdown passes from Justin
Fields and a t D run and there went over
Rutgers twenty seven buck guys let at the half thirty
five three Kyle Trask of the Gators four touchdown passes
(01:47:39):
is eight rank. Florida beat number five Georgia. Georgia with
three turnovers. In fact, passing as a team nine for
twenty nine through the year. Two touchdowns three interceptions. Meanwhile,
Florida's trask four hundred seventy four yards passing. Unfortunately, Gators
startight end Kyle Pitts left with a head injury after
a targeting foul. Number Cincinnati is six and oh after
(01:48:01):
beating Houston. Number seven Texas A and M won easily
at South Carolina. In fact, South Carolina on ten drives,
had nine first downs. Oregon beat Stanford. Stanford was over
four on fuel goal attempts. Number thirteen Indiana down Michigan
for the first time since nine seven thirty twenty one.
The Wolverines rushing as a team eighteen carries thirteen yards,
(01:48:21):
eight penalties, as well a couple interceptions thrown. Number fourteen
Oklahoma State came back to win at Kansas State, although
start running back Chewba Hubbard was slowed by injury. According
to reports, he only had six carries. Wins for Coastal
Carolina and Marshall in the top twenty. Iowa stayed to
come back win against Baylor, which is now one and four.
It was thirty eight thirty one the final for the Cyclones,
who won despite four turnovers. Baylor threw an interception in
(01:48:44):
the end zone with about a minute left. SMU at
Oklahoma with wins nineteenth ranked Oklahoma. Yeah, they were playing Kansas.
Sixty two to nine was the final, but the Sooner's
defense had nine sacks in the game. In fact, the
lead was sixty two to three until winless Kansas oh
and seven scored a touchdown on the final play, So
the Jayhawks finished with nine punts, nine penalties and just
(01:49:08):
nine points tonight. Meanwhile, Oklahoma had thirty one first downs
in only twenty seven minutes of possession. And then the
Pac twelve opener, a nine am game at the l
A Coliseum for Fox ranked USC somehow steals this one.
They were dead. They'd committed four turnovers, but with too
late touchdown passes and recovering and on site kick in between,
(01:49:28):
they beat Arizona State seven three fumbles for a s
U in this one. Number twenty two Texas edged West
Virginia seventeen thirteen West Virginia and oh for three on
fourth down conversions. And then the Liberty win ranked twenty five.
This team that's third year in FBS is all independent
like b y U Liberty one at Virginia Tech thirty eight,
(01:49:49):
thirty five Liberty, also located in Virginia. They kicked a
fifty one yard field goal in the final seconds after
Virginia Tech had called a time out, costing them what
would have been a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown,
and Virginia Tech on its own offense, missed a fifty
yard field goal attempt late in the third quarter, wound
up losing by three. Maryland one at windless Penn State nineteen.
(01:50:11):
Next week, Maryland hosts Ohio State pit one at Florida
State forty one seventeen. Utah State parted ways with coach
Gary Anderson. There are two late games on FS one.
They've started the fourth quarter. It's Washington State in the
lead at Oregon State, and they're starting the fourth quarter
at Hawaii. Home team is ahead seven, but New Mexico
(01:50:32):
is driving authentic. Won the Breeders Cup Classic. Austin Cindric
took NASCAR's Axfinity Series title. NASCAR's Cup Series season finale
a Sunday afternoon. Dodgers first base coach George Lombard is
leaving to be Detroit's bench coach. By the way, Awards
week is coming up for MLB Rookie of the year winners,
for example, will be announced on Monday, and the NFL
(01:50:52):
notes Baltimore Ravens did activate wide receiver Dez Bryant off
the practice quiety has been out for nearly three years.
Dallas will start a quarterback Garrett Gilbert against the Steelers.
Lions QB Matthew Stafford was taken off the COVID reserve
list so he could play tomorrow at Minnesota, and Jets
quarterback Sam Donald is doubtful for Monday night with a
bad shoulder. Back to you, all right, thanks to Sega.
Welcome back to the Fox Sports Radio studios, and it's
(01:51:15):
brought to you by Geiko. It's also easy to say
fifteen percent of more in car insurance with Geiko. Go
to Geiko dot com or you could give them a
call one eight hundred nine for seven OTTO. The only
hard part figuring out which way is easier. Now. First,
our producer Eric Roberts. I think that's our producer. I've
never talked him ever, my be his first day on
the job. What's going on to you? Are? What's happening?
(01:51:37):
My friend? What's up? We're what you tell me? What's
going on here? You wanted to think here's something about
what the saga had to say. I think you misread.
I think I had something to say, you Eric, are
you are we all set with you here? Now? This
is the second time he's done that to me, and
it's every time it's a scramble to put my headphones on.
It's like, Okay, no idea, you had something like last
(01:51:59):
time of like odds for something in Vegas, and I'm like,
and there was a Bernie message that you misread last time.
I'm listening, Arnie, I promise. So what I was gonna say,
are is that Bernie just referenced the fact that there
is a bet you can get it William Hill for
the Steelers to go sixteen and o one odds. Usually,
I feel like that's just burning your money, putting it
(01:52:20):
on fire. Here's the Steelers remaining schedule. They have the Cowboys,
Bengals twice, okay, two wins, Jaguars when Washington, when Colts,
when Bills, that's the only tough one. And Ravens the way,
(01:52:43):
just one thing? Did you read him in order? I
did not read him in order. No, I was going,
what what is the last game of the year? The
last the last two are at Bengals Colts and at
Brown's any chance they have things wrapped up for like
the number one seed they decided to sit people of
that last game, or no, we'll remember there's only one
team that gets to buy this. That's right, That's what
(01:53:04):
I'm thinking. So may they have to keep him in
there all the way through weeks sixteen? Then? Probably? So
let me ask you a really stupid question that I
know you're gonna think I'm dumb for does go in
sixteen and no matter? Because I think, like it's a
cool thing to say, but between the Patriots losing in
the Super Bowl, the Golden State Warriors that year that
they pushed to get the regular season record and then
(01:53:25):
flamed out in the finals, Like, I think it's really cool,
But I think a coach I don't know, Like I
don't know if a coach is like geeked up to
play his guys if they have the number one seed
wrapped up at that point. No, I actually do think
it's important. You may have to go sixteen and oh
to get the number one seed because the Chiefs could
go fifteen and watch um, So you may actually have
to have zero losses or one loss to have the
(01:53:47):
number one seed, which means you get to buy which
gives you a tremendous advantage ever over all the other
teams in the playoffs. So yeah, in football it actually
does mean something. And plus you get the bye week
and you get you know, the two weeks off while
everybody's you know, fighting it out the week before. So yeah,
it does mean something. Here's another hypothetical. Steelers go sixteen
(01:54:08):
and oh, Chiefs go fifteen and one. Is anybody really
picking the Steelers over the Chiefs to go to the
Super Bose Yeah? Well, you know, I want to say,
Physick and Bernie and r J and some of the
guys were talking about this before the season started that um,
they were taking you know, picks for Super Bowl and
they said, I gotta go with the Pittsburgh Steelers at
(01:54:31):
to one. And the rational was that, um, they weren't
as bad as they look last year because obviously they
didn't have Roethlisberger, they had no quarterback play. If Roethlisberger
comes back and just plays decent, then they'll make the playoffs.
And who knows wants to make the playoffs. I don't
know if they thought they'd be seven and oh, but Um,
they all I think took it, uh Pittsburg one. Yeah,
(01:54:53):
I remember Bernie saying that, you know, the one thing,
the only thing I would say to that is it
was obviously it looks like a great bet now, but
nobody could have envisioned the weapon that Chase Claypool would be.
You know, like like if you knew how good Chase
Claypool would be, that bet feels a lot different than
them blindly betting the Steelers without Claypool. I guess what
(01:55:15):
I'm trying to say is like the bet is that
much more impressive because we didn't know how good Claypool
is gonna be. They're also taking the odds though it
was to one. They were looking for a little value.
Anybody could take the Chiefs at three to one or
you know something like that. They were looking for the
Ravens and maybe seven or eight the one. Um they're like, hey,
Pittsburgh here or you know, we got like twenty five
to one. Well, good long shot. Um, Cleveland's not gonna
(01:55:39):
maybe amount to anything. Cincinnati is gonna have their struggles.
I kind of like the making the playoffs. That's that's
what you're basing it on, you know. Yeah, no, I
I listen, it was a great bet even um, it
was a great bet period. I just think it was
that much more impressive because we had no idea that
Chase Claypool was gonna be this rock star that he's been,
and he's been fantastic. So uh, no doubt about that.
(01:56:02):
You know, not a lot of great intriguing games. We
haven't talked about about the Seattle Buffalo game. I heard
an interesting stat last time, Um, Seattle's gone to the
East Coast the last ten games or tendan Oh how
about that? Yeah, no, they you know, it doesn't seem
to phase them. I remember when they opened in Atlanta
and it was a huge deal and and they were like,
(01:56:24):
weirdly an underdog and nobody understood why. So I'm I mean,
it's still a pretty surprising stat tenanto in their last ten.
We haven't talked about a B. By the way, what
are your thoughts on a B? You know that's the
the Tom Brady reunion in Tampa. I think he's going
to be tremendous for Tom Brady. Obviously it will stretch
out of defense, and I was wondering is he gonna
be able to get the ball to Antonio deep, but
(01:56:46):
then again, you hit him over the middle, He's gone.
I think he's gonna be fantastic. For a matter of fact,
I think they make them. He makes them the NFC
favorite to go to the super Bowl. Yeah I don't well, yeah,
I don't disagree with that at all. Tampa's and so
impressive to me. And I know they were a little
flat the other night against the Giants on Monday Night,
but they have so many weapons, the defense is playing
(01:57:06):
so good. They look really good. Right? What about that
coming back after three years? Does does he have any
game left? What do you think? I have my doubts.
I have my doubts. I mean, I don't I don't
remember him being that good before before he left, And
so I get it. It's a good story, but yeah,
I don't know. I'm not sold. All right, So we'll
(01:57:27):
come back. We'll get to our picks as we finished
out the show. That's next right here on Fox Sports
our Radio. All right, welcome back to the Fox Sports
Radio studios. This segment brought to you by Geico, Aaron Torres,
Arnie Span. You're finishing up the show, Give me a
little football music. Put us back in the mood. Let's
(01:57:48):
get to our picks. I'll start things off. Torres, I
put my money wor my mouth is. I told you
I don't like to after one game, and that doesn't
and that means I'm not gonna like him after two games.
I agree with Bernie. If you can't keep up with
the Arizona Cardinals, you're in big trouble because they've got
a real good offense. And that's what's gonna happen here.
(01:58:10):
I think Arizona could just outscore Miami. It won't even
be close. I can see this one in a route.
Give me Arizona laying a small number here. I think
this is a gift. And they get the bye week
last week, so they had two weeks to prepare aris
Miami on the meanwhile, no bye week to make it
a second start, this first one on the road. Give
(01:58:30):
me Arizona minus five and a half. Alright, I'm gonna
steal a stat from you now. Uh Seattle ten straight
wins on the East Coast. They're playing a one pm
Eastern kickoff against Buffalo. I'm not concerned at all about
the travel. Buffalo has not been the same team the
last month. Two losses then they have that game against
the Jets where they can't score a touchdown. They have
(01:58:52):
to hold on against Arnie Spaniards. New England Patriots, for
dear life, they stink. They're not any good. Seattle minus
three is a game if give me the Seahawks pig
agree with you on that one. Um, don't want the
nine and a half, don't need the nine and a half.
I'm taking the nine and a half. The j e Ts, Jets, Jets, Jets.
(01:59:12):
They don't beat the Patriots on Monday Night football at home.
They won't win a game. They're gonna go oh in
sixteen and they'll get Trevor Lawrence with that number one
pick uh and Sam Donald will go somewhere else, maybe
the Cowboys. Who knows. Um, I gotta I gotta go
ahead and take the nine and a half. It's gonna
be a close one. New England does not look good.
Cam Newton can't run nine ten times a game and
(01:59:35):
expect other teams to fear that offense. They don't have
any weapons. Nobody's scared. Nobody that scared you. Harris looked
pretty good at running back last week. But other than that,
I gotta go ahead and go with the Jets in
this one, even without Sam Donald. Last week, you were
mad at me because I was putting too many teams
in the four team playoff. You've given Trevor Lawrence to
like eleven teams since we started this, right, Well, somebody's
(01:59:58):
got to get him nuts for sure. Alright, bet two
teams that will not. By the way, Twitter had a
good joke that said, um, Trevor Lawrence will not be
able to come back from COVID until the Jets make
their big I saw that that was good. All right,
we gotta get back to serious football stuff here. Baltimore Indie.
(02:00:19):
Baltimore a one point dog. I know they're on the road,
but have you seen Indie schedule. It's a softer schedule
than Alabama in a normal year. I think they have
a three thirty three percentage the rest of the way,
which is unbelievable. Listen that they're best winners against the Bears.
I think to your point, Arnie, they got Coastal Carolina,
New Mexico State the next two weeks, the Indianapolis Colts here.
(02:00:42):
They stink. Philip Rivers stinks. He's passed his prime. Baltimore
completely controlled that game against the Sea. I want to
say completely, but they outgained them two to one, ended
up losing. They bounce back and win. This is a gift.
It's basically a pick of minus one. I like Dravens.
I agree with Bernie. I think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
are a great pick, and they're gonna be looking good
(02:01:03):
at home with all the offensive weapons and they're just
starting the gel They're they're not even in third gear yet,
watch out when they get there. The Saints have been disappointing.
I think this year. Um, I know, tough schedule, but
now they're on the road to Tampa. Give me the
Buccaneers minus the four in this one. I agree with
you on that one, Arnie, I was gonna say, I
(02:01:23):
actually think there could be chemistry issues with the Bucks
later in the year. But right now, Antonio Brown he's
going to be on his best behavior. He's he's sharing
a bunk bed with Tom Brady. They're doing sleepovers every night.
It's so can you guys won't even let me stay
with you when I come to town. I don't even
want to share studio with you. We gotta talk to
the busses about that. But Patriots Bucks roll in this one.
(02:01:46):
I'm with you. When I saw the Saints are five
and two, I was like, I feel like they lose
every single game, or at least it's super competitive to
the final whistle. Uh bucks roll here. By the way,
I'm only coming on a Monday through Thursday, so you
don't have to see me in study. I did that
on purpose. I wouldn't have to see you, guys. I
appreciate that. That is the best Christmas gift you could
have gotten me. Are woa. By the way, my giants
(02:02:10):
real quick. With one win, it will stay with one.
When they're not even beating Washington tomorrow, giants have been
playing hard. They're not even winning at Washington Tomorrow. Washington,
come forget about it. Thanks the Laker don or. Technical
director Eric Roberts Bread new on the show, so it
was nice to meeting him. Uh he was our producer.
I guess the segre on the off taps. Uh Torres
(02:02:36):
my partner. I'm back on Sunday with Chris Blank eight
p m To eleven pm Pacific, eleven to two Eastern.
Uh straight out of Vegas, Bernie Fradoh, He's coming up
next year on Fox Sports Radio.
