Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
And man, oh man, oh man, it is good. We
got football on all of our screens here.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
We got a Chargers forty nine ers preseason game. We
have something that appears to be Arena League football. I
didn't know that even still existed, neither here nor there.
We have high school football. And of course, as the
SEGRE just told you, one game left on the week
zero slate, Stanford at Hawaii. We will keep you posted
on that one. Jay mart Jason Martin, how you doing men?
(00:34):
Hope everything's well?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yep, everything's pretty good. Football on television now, football on
television earlier today that actually counted. It's good time, it
really is. The temperature is still kind of hot here,
so I'm still waiting for the fall to get here.
But past that we're okay. I know it's hot out there.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yes, yeah, it is like unbearably hot, very humid for
this time here. Let me ask you this, okay, So
a couple of things. First of all, obviously, the big
game of the day, Iowa State and Kansas State in Dublin,
just really quickly. Iowa State wins twenty four to twenty one.
Listen with due respect to our audience and aims and Manhattan, Kansas.
(01:19):
You know, if you want the forty five minute game recap,
this probably isn't necessarily the place for you. But with
that said, I mean, I don't know how much you
got to watch, if there were any takeaways, but listen.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
It is a meaningful game.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
It's a cop first of all top twenty five matchup obviously,
but also a conference game in what I think most
of us and in about twenty minutes from now, will
reveal our college football playoff bracket. I think we all
think the Big Twelve is going to be probably top
to bottom, maybe the most competitive league in the country.
And so I just bring it up because you can't
say it's only week zero doesn't mean anything, because it
(01:55):
is a big conference win for Iowa State. Kansas State
falls to zero to one only on their regular season record,
but also in conference play. So this is a game
that could literally have impact through the first week of
December in the Big Twelve championship game, which of course
would then mean almost certainly impact on the college football
playoff as well.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, I mean, this is this is a tough loss
for them to take it's weird because it's week zero,
and I've said this for years and years. Week zero,
week one, I kind of you can't throw it out
because it matters, but it's not indicative of what the
teams are going to be a couple of months from now.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
The problem is last year they stopped.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah that's true. Like sometimes it is continu to your point,
but yeah, but looking at this, like Casey, it's going
to have to overcome this, but they're going to have
an opportunity to do that. You talk about that league
being so competitive. What that may mean though, is they're
going to beat each other. They're all going to beat
each other around a little bit, and so they're going
to have an opportunity because of that. I just I
(03:00):
hate it because I mean, they schedule a conference game
right out of the gate, and somebody's going to take
a critical loss. This this is gonna sound just why
would I have to go here right now? Oh but
you had seventeen versus twenty two right in seventeen twenty
two or seventeen twenty one in terms.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Of the rankings according to the AH whatever.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
It was, it was right around that number. Yeah, you
seventeen twenty two. Okay, you want to expand the playoff
you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, I see where you're going.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
You big ten. You want to go twenty eight teams? Yeah,
you get like seventeen didn't look like a team that
had any business being near a college football playoff today. Again,
I'm trying not to overreact to it because this week
zero in Week one, but this sport is not deep
enough to field a twenty eight to twenty fourteen playoffs like,
not at all, not if it wants to hold on
to the fact that that that postseason is supposed to
(03:53):
represent just awesome football teams all the way around. These
two teams are. They're pretty good. Neither one of them
needs to be we're near a playoff performance. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
No, I think it's a totally fair point. And you know,
uh uh, I uh, what was I gonna say? I
kind of lost my trade of thought here, to be honest,
But what I will say is is that you're one
hundred percent correct, and I just think that it's a
let me put it this way, I think that it's
a metaphor this game for it's fun, it's awesome, it's great.
(04:25):
I think to your point, though, and we're gonna do
our college football playoff rankings in just a minute. You know,
you start getting past team you know five, I mean
when we did this last year, right, you know, it's
like you get past team five to six and you
kind of realize that there's gonna be some teams that
that maybe are pretty good but have a disadvantageous schedule
and they're not gonna get in.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
And then they're.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Gonna be teams that kind of stink but the schedule
breaks right in their manner, or maybe they don't stink,
but they stink when they're put up against truly elite teams.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
And so to me, I think it's actually a great point.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I hadn't even thought of it from that perspective, but
it is such an important point though, because now that
we're talking fucking it through and I don't even know
where you stand on sixteen. We actually got pseudo news
this week that you know, the SEC is going to
nine league games, which to me kind of means they
probably feel like either expansion is coming or certainly they
feel like they're comfortable with where they stand in the
(05:17):
twelve team play. I don't even know where you stand
on sixteen but twenty eight is ridiculous. And then to
your point, once we go past I think twelve maybe sixteen,
it just completely devalues the regular season.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
And so, yes, this was a fun opener.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
It didn't feature any teams that I think we're going
to be talking about in late December into January fun
starts of the season. But to your point, if those
are two of the top twenty five teams in college football,
we don't need them in a playoff setting, right.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, and yeah, I'm cool with sixteen. I want to
see a few more teams than it that are playing
for something that really matters outside of just not that
they don't care and bowl games out you know, external
the college football playoff. But there's a difference there. So
I would like to involve a few more. But a
few more, is it like eventually that door does need
(06:10):
to close. It needs to stay elite, or at least
close to elite. Maybe you elite is the top line.
Maybe that's too much of a superlative to use. But
once you get past that above average line, like we
don't need to then be trying to parse who gets in.
That's not very good. But somebody has to get in.
To fill this slot like that, that's just not good,
(06:30):
even if you're filling it out with teams that had
pretty good seasons or even great seasons that were from
smaller schools. I just I don't think that that is
going to represent college football particularly well either. So, yeah,
sixteen is about my max. But watching this game, it
was just it does remind you again like these two
teams were playing hard, like they wanted this thing so badly.
(06:54):
It was entertaining. It kind of went back and forth.
It wasn't like crisp in terms of the offenses. But
you're not going to see that from most teams that
are gonna be in Dublin in Week zero, So it's
not the easiest place to play. I don't know how
much you can take away from it, but if you're
k State, you got a loss on the record, and
you got a loss to a team that technically was
(07:14):
lower than you in the preseason rankings, which in my
opinion still shouldn't exist. But that notwithstanding, you now have
a barrier. Now you have a bit of an obstacle
that you're gonna have to overcome a game that maybe
you could have lost later on down the road. Now
you don't have that luxury because you've already got that loss.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
All right, I'm gonna switch gears and taking a different
direction because your big takeaway was the playoff, you know,
you know, thinking about how deep college football really is
at the top.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Here's my takeaway.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
And again, you know, again you said you don't want
to be too negative by winding about something. I don't
want to be too negative whinding about something. I think
we need to figure out what week zero is. And
to me, I and what I mean by that is
this is that right now on my team. Well, first
of all, you have this great game to open the season.
You know, great as a relative term or wasn't you
know we're not gonna be talking about in fifty years,
(08:05):
but two top twenty five teams Dublin. It feels big,
it feels awesome. The next game on the schedule is
not on TV, Idaho State versus UNLV. Then a couple
hours later you get Fresno State Kansas. You get Sam Houston,
Western Kentucky, Stanford, Hawaii, which actually just went final to
say you have the updates for you in just a minute,
(08:26):
as Hawaii actually beat Stanford to open the season in Hawaii.
I bring it up because to me, I need to
we need to figure out what week zero is because
I'm turning on the TV and we got Top twenty
five matchup, then nothing, then we have like FBS versus FCS, and.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Then we have a couple of FCS games.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
We got some high school football on, and to me,
I just feel like I understand, you know, you know,
you don't want to put too much on Week zero
because you want you know, you want one, no matter
and all that.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
I guess.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
I just like it just was so disjointed, disorganized whatever.
Where You're coming off the high of that Kansas State
Iowa State game. Iowa State, you know, clinches it in
the final seconds with a big fourth down conversion. You're excited.
Then there's nothing on. Then there's something on, but it's
not on. It's just it speaks to me to the
dysfunction of college football. Because college football, we know this,
(09:25):
but there's every there's leadership at the top, but it's
conference driven, not NCAA driven. And so I think we
say this all the time. Nobody's looking out for the
good of college football. They're looking out for the good
of their individual team, their individual school. Their individual conference,
they're whatever. And so I was saying about that today
of just the idea that I think this is a
metaphor of it's all little disorganized and once we play
(09:48):
the games, it's awesome. But like today, I thought it
was a perfect example of we have this one awesome
game and then there's just nothing basically the rest of
the day.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Yeah, I mean, I think that it's all about how
you market it. If you're gonna do a week zero,
don't have one sort of regionally interesting matchup and then
nothing else that anybody is going to pay any attention to,
you talk about disjoint it. It just kind of it's
just kind of a mess. It's like, here's a game.
Here's a game. Here's a game. You probably aren't going
(10:19):
to have any reason to pay attention to this but football, right, Like,
maybe exactly come up with a way take three, I
don't know, come up with three or four games that
are matching in conference opponents. Maybe I'm not talking about
top five or whatever like that, but make it a
thing like there's gonna be three or four games whatever
it is, and they do have relevance, like they're either
(10:40):
big brands or again, they're big conference matchups or something
like that, and they could be middle of the road games.
But at the same time, like do something with it
where it can be marketed. Like I'm not talking about
an end season tournament, Adam Silver, I'm just talking about
something to where you can market week zero as Hey,
(11:01):
this is sort of the soft launch, Like we kind
of know that Thursday, prior to the Sunday in the NFL,
you're gonna get a pretty solid PM match up to
kind of kick off the season, and then Sunday everybody
else plays. But you only have one game there. Here,
you sort of have several games, but you don't have
any There's not like any way to kind of contextualize
(11:23):
what's happening. It's just sort of all over the place.
I think that you bring it home, you structure it
a little bit. You say, here's an SCC matchup, here's
a Big twelve match up, here's a Big ten match up,
here's an SEC matchup, and you do.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
All of those.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
And yes, I know small conferences can whatever, right, I mean,
they can be added to it, but have three or
four games where it is set in stone that we're
gonna do this year after year. After year, put them
in neutral sites, put them in Dublin, and go overseas
wherever you want, like put one in London, put do
whatever it is you want to do, put one in
Mexico City, or find a different way to do it.
But do something where it feels a little bit larger,
(11:58):
where this is a soft launch, but it's more like
a party, like yes, week one is Week one, but
at the same time, these teams that play early are
basically the fireworks show before everything gets started, so they
have a stage on top of that, and then Week
one is its own stage.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Yeah, And I think that's a great point.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
And by the way, I think they can also feature
some of those smaller conference you know teams or whatever,
you know, some of the smaller you know, the whatever,
doesn't really matter who it is, but I think it
could be a good platform for them as well. But
it was just weird of going straight from again Top
twenty five matchup decided essentially on the final play fourth
down conversion to just nothing, and so so it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
It's definitely interesting as week zero is in the books.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
And by the way, Week zero is now officially final
because the final game of the day by the way
it is. My last gripe about week zero. We got
a game in Hawaii that kicked off at seven thirty
Eastern time.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Yeah, what we're doing?
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Can we get it? I'm not asking for the one
am in week zero, but maybe like a.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Ten eastern seven Pacific Like that's another perfect example of
you got the degenerates on the couch, you got families
on the couch, you got people that want to watch
football on the couch. And it's over at eleven fifteen Eastern.
I guess it's eleven fifteen eastern. Maybe it's not so bad,
but you get the game in Hawaii.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
How are we how are we get? How are we having?
Speaker 1 (13:23):
I think it was a one thirty Easter or one
thirty local time start there, Come on, college football, be better.

we talked a little bit about week one or week zero.
(15:29):
Excuse me, all games are now final to say, we'll
get you the updates in the news and notes in
just a minute. The big one, of course, Top twenty
five matchup in Dublin, Iowa State takes that game twenty
four to twenty one. That was the big result from Saturday.
Next weekend is going to be insane. And listen for
all of our criticisms in segment one. We do love
(15:50):
college football, and so what the heck, We're gonna go
ahead and drop our college football playoff bracket right now.
Our twelve teams, who's making the playoff off, who's winning
the championship? Mary, give us a little music? Oh yeah,
that banned on campus. It's great, Okay, So this is
(16:11):
how we're gonna set it up. So just a couple
quick reminders. Twelve teams in the college football Playoff. You've
probably heard this year. The only real difference from last year. Remember,
five conference champions get in, so one group of five
team is we'll get in. We assume that the acc SEC,
Big ten, and Big twelve get the other four automatic bids.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
The only other change.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
To the playoff this year, yes, it's still a twelve
for a second year, hopefully we keep it there for
a while, is that there is no longer auto buys
to the quarterfinals for conference champions. That's how Arizona State
got into the quarters last year, It's how Boise State
got into the quarters last year. That will not be
the case. It will be true top seeding. So with
that said, we're gonna give you our bracket. We're gonna
(16:55):
go in reverse order, giving you team twelve all the
way down to team one. We probably won't go through
the entire bracket, but we'll give you our national champion.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Jamart, I'm gonna put it on your plate first.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Who is your twelve seed in j Mart's College football
Playoff bracket?
Speaker 3 (17:13):
All right, So, as I told you earlier, I used
it's non scientific, but it was the way that I
looked at. This was I kind of wrote down the
teams that I liked, that probably about fifteen sixteen teams
somewhere in that neighborhood. And then I went and looked
at every one of their schedule, and basically I totaled
(17:33):
up the number of games that I felt were trouble
spots for them along the road. Now, some of them
are TBA in terms of their times and some of
that kind of stuff. So we know some of the buys.
We don't know necessarily all of the schedules across the board,
but we know the teams that they're playing at the
very least. And so I also wanted to find a
couple of places where I could pick a team that
(17:57):
maybe a lot of people won't have because there's gonna
be some brand of chaos this year. So I had
to find a few that were more off the beaten path.
Now I wouldn't say they're that far off the beaten path,
but there's one team I don't have in from this
same conference that most people will have in. But I
(18:18):
do have this team in, and I don't know that
virtually anybody has this team in. My number twelve seed
is the South Carolina game costs. Okay, Okay, Now they
have some trouble spots and no question about that, but
Sellers is the truth, and I feel like he's gonna
come back a more polished passer this year to go
with what's basically unstoppable when he tries to run the football.
(18:42):
I generally just like what Shane Beemer is building there.
They've got a stud on defense as well. Even though
it's going to be difficult, I just like them. I mean,
they were right on the doorstep last year, and I
feel like they're gonna be right there again. They're in
an East situation at least kind of where they used
to be the way that they used to be seen.
(19:04):
Even though it's difficult, I like them better than some
of the other possibilities in the SEC. So I've got
South Carolina at twelve.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Okay, So I have a surprise SEC team later on
in the bracket. I will save that for later. My
number twelve team is the Boise State Broncos. We don't
have to break down the depth chart, but a group
of five champion will get in. Boise State obviously last
year got in with Ashton Genty. Ashton gent is now
an Oakland Raider, but they return a bunch. They the
(19:34):
quarterbacks back and basically like they're sort of the gold
standard at this point of group of five teams. The
other thing is too I think it'll be interesting. They
have a couple intriguing games throughout the calendar to kind
of put people put themselves on people's radar, including at
Notre Dame in November or in October. Excuse me not
saying they win that game, but I think, you know,
(19:54):
obviously they will have opportunities, so I will have I
will have the Boise State Broncos as my number eleven team,
number twelve.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Team, your number twelve teen A right now, you can
give me your number eleven team.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
Okay, so my number eleven team. I have been back
and forth on two teams for my last at large spot,
and it's not either of the SEC teams that I've mentioned.
It's one team that you can inherently trust, but it
is also a team that everyone doesn't really like. And
(20:29):
then it is also a team that no one can trust.
But the talent is there. So I this is gonna
sound crazy. I almost put Indiana back in because the
schedule gets much tougher this year at Oregon at Penn State.
But there's a lot of drop off after that big game.
They're playing Illinois at home. You know what, screw it,
(20:50):
I'm gonna have a little fun. I'm gonna put Indiana at.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Number eleven and changing.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah, I'll do it, because, you know what, I don't
want to just have a super generic, boring bracket.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
The team that I I also had in this spot
was Miami, and Miami it's the opposite.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
They have the talent. I told you a few weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
I do think that there's a little revisionist history on
Carson Beck. I understand he wasn't great last year, but
two years ago, twenty four touchdowns, seventy two percent completetion percentage.
I just don't trust Mario Cristabont, and so bottom line,
I'll stick with Indiana. I think that they can get
to ten and two. And I know that everybody's all
fired up about how Indiana got in last year. I
(21:28):
just find it hard to believe that Indiana at ten
and two, a big ten team at ten and two,
would get left out.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Yeah, so I definitely Indiana was definitely a team that
I looked at as well as another team that starts
with the letter I from that exact same conference. So
here's where I have Boise.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Okay, so I.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Don't have to remake your case for you, but I
wrote down obviously Notre Dame on October the fourth in
South Bend, and maybe you could slip up somewhere. But
I look at the rest of the schedule and I think,
really Notre Dame is going to be the only loss,
and so I think ultimately you're looking at Boise, You're
looking at Tulane, maybe you're looking at Memphis. There's a
(22:08):
few other teams that you could potentially look at. But
I looked at Tulane and they go too Ole Miss
and they go to Memphis. I think they probably lose
one of those, maybe they even lose both of those.
And Boise is just a team that when you talk
about trust, Boys is a team that you can just
trust and they've always kind of been there. So to me,
they only have that one real chance to lose, and
(22:31):
probably will lose that game. But that's where I've got
Boys is right there at.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Eleven, perfect number ten.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
I'll just get to mind because this is the team
that I've been pseudo teasing I think to your point,
somebody from the SEC is gonna get in as a surprise.
I had a few teams circled, including South Carolina, who
j Mart does have in. You know, I Meani're gonna
look really smart or really dumb on this one. I'm
gonna go with the Florida Gators.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
Interesting, I thought you were going with A and M.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
So I have been on and off the A and
M bandwagon all summer. And two quick things. One, they
just have a weird stretch in their schedule three straight
road games in the SEC, which I don't know that
that happens very often, plus Florida on the front end,
plus South Carolina on the back end.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
I'll tell you what I mean. You know, even if
they go three and two.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
They play Notre Dame as well, and so I it's
A and M also, that's part of it. But the
thing with Florida is, I do think because they've been
really hammering home this little college football nerdy stuff. But
they have really been hammering home this whole concept of
you know, record strength. In other words, they don't want
(23:44):
teams like Indiana that don't play anybody to just get in.
And so I think if Florida with that schedule, which
I won't read all of it, but these are the
notable games at LSU, at Miami, Texas at home at
A and M then Georgia ona Neutral Ada will miss
Tennessee if they I think if they go nine and
three with that schedule, they're going to have good wins.
(24:05):
I will put them in as a nine and three
sec at large team at number nine.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah, So, I mean, I don't dislike that. It's just
is Laguway gonna be able to stay healthy? I think
is one of the big things. But yeah, I mean
they're about fifteen sixteen on most people's lists, so I
don't think that that's that's not too off the beaten path.
But yeah, I couldn't quite get there my number ten.
I got Miami. Oh yeah, exactly. But I look at them.
(24:30):
They go to SMU. I don't know what SMU is
gonna be this year. They go to Florida State. It's
in state, but I don't know that Florida State's gonna
be particularly good. They play Florida and they played Notre Dame.
Those two. I think they probably lose, but I think
they got a shot because man, the ACC is just
weak is all get out, Like, just looking at it
across the board, I don't see a universe where they
(24:50):
don't have two teams get in and I know what
the other one's gonna be. So here I've got Miami.
It's more process of elimination. I don't love them, but
I do think cars. I agree with with you about
Carson Beck. Jordan's receivers were awful last year in terms
of their drops, and maybe Beck wasn't. Certainly Beck had
regressed a little, but that whole team just was not
(25:11):
the same. And I have a hard time believing that
Carson Beck is not going to be better this year
than he was last year, at which point I think
that that's gonna help Miami out. Not that I think
Carson Beck's gonna outperform what cam Ward just did, but
I look at it and there's just there are too
many teams that I just don't feel great about where
I'm just like, yeah, I don't love Miami, but I'm
(25:32):
gonna put him in anyway.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
All right, I'll tell you what will continue this conversation.
Do want to take a quick pause because there are
football scores to update, So for the first time this
evening on our show, the first time this fall for football,
even though it's like two hundred ten degrees outside. Steve Seger,
what is training, my friend?
Speaker 7 (25:50):
We did have five games on the Saturday schedule to
start the college football season, and the late game is
in Hawaii. Appropriately enough, the Warriors hosting stamp. Hawaii tied
the game on a field goal of thirty seven yards
with about two minutes to go. Stanford's offense then went
three and out. Quickly, Hawaii got the ball back and
on the final play of regulation lined up for a
(26:13):
thirty eight yard field goal attempt. Is up, o god,
Haaii has done CBS with the call twenty three to twenty.
Hawaii is the final with those two late field goals
in this contest. Tonight and Kansas on Fox TV won
easily thirty one to seven over Fresno State on a
(26:34):
night they reopened the Kansas Football Stadium after construction. Wins
for Western Kentucky and UNLV and for Iowa State, which
started the season with the win in the rain in
Dublin over Kansas State twenty four to twenty one. Each
team was preseason top twenty five as for the NFL
exhibition campaign, it ends with still two more games to
finish up. Tonight in the preseason, the forty nine Ers
(26:57):
have taken the lead on the Chargers twenty three to
six team. There are three and a half minutes to go.
The game was tied, but with six minutes left, Charger
quarterback dj luiangli La, who played for what was it
fifty two schools in college by the end of way.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
I believe. Yeah, we talked about Florida State week zero
last year. Oh, you can't overreact to week zero. No,
they just really sticked.
Speaker 7 (27:18):
I personally will remember the Oregon State career, but from
that he started seven of seven with a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
I forgot about the Oregon Stadium.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
That was how memorable that was the post Clemson year,
the first one.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
That's future Pack twelve champion Oregon State Beavers.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
You're thinking it. They won it last year too. No, actually,
Washington State, Washington State the Pack two anyway at one
to zero in league play.
Speaker 7 (27:38):
Yes, Dju started seven of seven and since then is uh,
it's not seven of seven. Let's just say he's four
of fifteen with an interception and it was a pick
six with six minutes to go to give the forty
nine ers. The lead now three and a half minutes
left the home team up twenty three sixteen. San Francisco Stadium,
(27:58):
by the way, which is in San Francisco, will be
hosting the Super Bowl at the end of this coming
NFL season. As for the other late game, it's halftime
in Arizona, Las Vegas Raiders tied with the Arizona Cardinals
ten ten Ashton gent with just a couple carries five
yards rushing in the first half. Among the earlier games,
Cleveland kicked a field goal on the final play to
(28:18):
beat the Rams nineteen seventeen. Schudor Sanders was sacked five
times in the second half. Denver won twenty eight nineteen
at New Orleans. The Saints will name their starting quarterback
next week, either Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shuck. There was
an next gould be good, that's yeah, or not so good.
NASCAR's race was tonight. Four hundred at Daytona goes to
(28:39):
Ryan Blaney, who won by half a car length. This
ends their regular season, so with this victory of Blaney,
that means the final two spots unofficially clinch for the
upcoming playoffs. To Tyler Reddick and Alex Bowman, and the
playoffs for the Cup Series kickoff next weekend a Sunday.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Rastcar needs some help at Garland playoffs.
Speaker 7 (28:59):
Yeah, maybe you know, twenty two or twenty six people
can get into the oh. I guess that's already been
suggested this week anyway. Southern five hundred is next weekend,
and the golf season ends tomorrow. By the way, PGA's
Tour Championship going on and Atlanta, Patrick Cantley is tied
for the lead with Tommy Fleetwood in the nl WES.
The Dodgers and Padres were tied for the lead in
(29:21):
the division.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Not anymore.
Speaker 7 (29:22):
Dodgers have fallen in San Diego again, five to one
the final on FS one tonight. Padres have won five
straight victories for Houston and San Francisco, wins for the
Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. Pitcher Zach Wheeler will be out
six to eight months approximately, due for a second shoulder surgery.
Detroit one its fifth in a row, Toronto in twelve
innings one at Miami seven six, Boston all over the
(29:45):
Yankees twelve to one today and among the two late
games it's Cubs twelve one leading the Angels bottom of
the seventh Back to you, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Very much, Steve Disaga, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday
Air towards Jason Martin broadcasting live from the Fox Sports
Radio studios. Already going along. So Mary, give us some music,
put us in the mood. Let's keep this college football
playoff bracket going. We have revealed a grand total of
three teams.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
A good job.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Yeah, all right, number nine, c J mart In your bracket?
Speaker 3 (30:13):
Who do you got? Texas Tech?
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Texas Tech Big twelve Conference champions?
Speaker 3 (30:19):
That's right. Look at Utah, at Arizona State, at Kansas State.
Those are certainly games that they can lose. I'm just
buying into the idea that they spent a lot of
money and they did a lot of good work in
the transfer a portal, and this is the test case
to see whether or not we're going to see a
ton of this going forward. If this works, we're going
(30:41):
to see a lot of duplicates from some schools that
we have not thought about in a long long time.
They've got deep pockets at Texas Tech. They use them.
I think at the very least that's going to get
them into the playoffs and win a championship in their conference.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah, I'll just say this really quick.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
On Texas Tech, it also seemed thought out, like, yes,
they spent a lot of money, but it is unlike
the A and M thing where they were just buying
everybody left and right. It's like, it feels like there's
a thought process to this. We'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
I'll give you my nine and eight in order because
it does include my big Big twelve champions so we
can piggyback Number nine.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Notre Dame fighting Irish.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Two toughest games of the year, Miami to open the
season on the road, Texas A and M at home
in actually week three, so they get the early buy.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
I think they split them. I really like Marcus Freeman.
The only thing I worry about.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
He's taken some weird losses at various points, So I
think they take a weird loss somewhere, and I think
there's just enough games that they could lose where they
still finish ten and two and respectable ten and two again,
Notre Dame not getting into the college football playoff without
they're not missing the college football playoff at ten and two.
Number eight is my Big Twelve Conference champion. I will
(31:50):
give it to the Arizona State Sun Devils repeat champion.
I know it's gonna be tough without Skataboo, but I
saw my buddy who actually covers the team, mentioned this
to me.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
They returned.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
I think he said, thirty eight of the forty four
guys on there too deep from a season ago. And listen,
I know it's a power for school, but they don't
really have money like that to just, you know, retain everybody.
And they retained everybody, and so the schedule is certainly tough.
At Iowa State, I think Utah will be improved, but
I have Arizona State as my Big Twelve Conference champion,
(32:24):
hosting Notre Dame in the first round of the.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
College Football Leaft. Keep give me number seven, j Mart,
We'll come back and do the rest, all right.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
My number eight?
Speaker 2 (32:33):
Oh, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
I'm is Alabama. I've got Bama at eight at FSU.
I'm not really worried about at Georgia Tennessee at South
Carolina LSU. I just I need to see what they're
gonna do with quarterback spot and how well he's going
to play, And just I want to see how they
come back from last year. I think they should be very,
(32:54):
very good, but I'm just kind of keeping it in
caution mode. So I'm gonna put them eight, and I'm
gonna put the Oregon Ducks at seven. At Penn State,
Indiana at Iowa are the three that I kind of
pegged as being trouble. I'm not as worried about Washington
this year. I just I'm not like over the moon
about this Oregon team. But I also just think they're
(33:16):
gonna be rock solid in that schedule kind of plays
to their advantage, and so I feel pretty good about
them coming in as one of those Big Ten representatives
at the seventh spot.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Well, I will be quick because my number seven team
is the Oregon Ducks. And uh, it's basically the exact
same logic as you. They lost a lot, but reletive, listen,
I think the Big Ten is getting better at the
middle and the bottom than it's been. But Oregon losing
a lot is still better than a lot of Big
Ten teams returning a lot. And so, like you said,
I don't know outs you know, listen that at Penn State,
(33:48):
Penn State better win that freaking game. So even if
Oregon loses that game, It's really hard to find a
second third loss. And so I think they're one of
these teams where, you know, making the playoff feels like
their ceiling. But because of the way the schedule breaks,
I do have them in the playoff. Tell you what,
we'll come back. When we do, we will reveal the
rest of our bracket in our National champion. Er toors
(34:10):
Jason Martin, this is Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back, everybody,
Fox Sports Radio. Er toords Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
We're taking you up till two a m.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Eastern time. Week zero is in the books. Five games
are done. The notable game Iowa State Kansas State in Dublin.
Iowa State gets the twenty four to twenty one win.
Week one really kicks off in earnest on Thursday. Boise
opens at South Florida, Illinois, a top twenty five team
(34:45):
will play on Friday. Also Nebraska Cincinnati early in the season,
so a couple intriguing games on Thursday. Tell you what, though, Mary,
go ahead, give us a little music, put us back
in the mood, because we got to get to the
rest of our college football playoff bracket. Excuse me, we're
up to the number seven team in our bracket. We
both had Oregon. Who do you have at number six?
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Georgia? Okay, at Tennessee, then they have a bye, they
get Alabama Texas, then they've got Ole, Miss and Florida
also on the schedule. There's just I think they're gonna
be very very good. Don't get me wrong, I just
I don't know that this is I feel like we've
kind of moved past the juggernaut version of Georgia that
(35:29):
we've seen. Certainly they're still gonna be there, obviously, but
six is about right. I think there's three four trouble
spots on that schedule. That's enough for me to hesitate
to go any higher.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
All right, I'll give you my number six team, maybe
a little bit of a surprise at how low they are.
I have Jason Martins, Penn State, Nitney Allons, Yeah, James Franklin.
Though for people who don't know, we are not fans
of James Franklin, listen. I think they're gonna get to
the Big Ten championship game. They're probably only gonna lose
to Ohio State in the regular season, but I think
if you get to a Big Ten Championship game and
(36:01):
you're hypothetically again playing Ohio State after you again didn't
beat them, at some point, like it gets in your
head and I listen, I'll I you know, shaker, I'll
have Ohio State in this bracket at some point. I
don't even think Ohio State is anywhere close to as
good as last year. But if the if Ohio State
gets that win, if Penn State has to face them
in the Big Ten Championship game again, I would worry
(36:22):
about the psyche going in. So I have Penn State
at number six? What's next at number five?
Speaker 3 (36:28):
J Mark Notre Dame. Okay, you had them lower obviously
at Miami and A and M or the two that
I marked are the same ones that you marked as well. Uh.
I want to see what they do, obviously with some
of their key losses, but they also have some guys
coming back. I think Freeman has We'll see if he's
gotten the Northern Illinoise out of his system going forward.
(36:49):
Like you mentioned, they have had some weird losses. I
just look at that schedule and I'm just not impressed.
I'm not impressed at all. And Notre Dame was really
good last year. I don't see any reason why that
is going to change. They're still gonna be able to
run like crazy, and they're gonna play hard nosed defense,
and Freeman's gonna have them coached up. So I feel
good about them. Just looking at at everything across the board,
(37:10):
I like them at five.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
All right, number five for me as the Texas Longhorns,
I have maybe more questions than some. The schedule is
certainly tougher at Florida, at Georgia, and certainly at Ohio
State next week on Fox at noon. I just it's
hard for me to find enough losses for them not
to get in. I think they take a half a
(37:32):
step back. I have them at number five as the
third ranked SEC team. I'll give you my other two
in a minute, but that means that I have two
SEC teams in the top four. I'll tell you what,
just to keep the conversation moving, I have Georgia at
number four SEC runner up. Thing I like about this year,
remember last year at Texas, at Bama at Ole Miss.
(37:53):
This year you got all three of those teams at home.
Some tricky road games that you mentioned at Tennessee. We'll
see how they handle that. You know, Auburn is always
a tricky spot for visiting teams. But I like George
to get back to Atlanta play for an SEC championship.
And I got them at number four.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Yeah, I mean, I know what your other two are
gonna because I already named both of them, but I
you know what, I had it differently. I'm thinking about
switching one right now. Okay, yeah, I'm gonna do it.
Speaker 8 (38:23):
Do it.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
I am going to put I'm gonna put. No, I'm
not gonna I'm gonna keep it right am. I got
Ohio State at four, Like, yeah, you could lose to Illinois,
but really it's Texas, Penn State at Michigan just because
it's Michigan and it's Ryan Day, so you throw them
out there. I'm not sure what Michigan is going to
be this year quite frankly, but I give them kind
of a three and a half on the scale of
(38:43):
you're kind of a little worried about certain games there.
I think they're gonna be good. I want to see again,
you know what they're gonna do without Howard, They're how
they're gonna run, how they're going to kind of manage everything,
and of course Jeremiah Smith's gonna have the whole world
on him all season long. I think he's gonna be fine.
But I think four is about right for them.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
All right, since we're getting a little short on time here,
I'll give you three and two. Three Clemson Tigers ACC Champs.
Spoiler alert. I think they win next week. I think
they finish maybe eleven to one, maybe ten and two.
I think they comfortably get into the College Football Playoff.
I think they're really good. And then Ohio State at
number two. I'm a little down again on the talent.
(39:25):
But to your point about the schedule, it's just hard
to find losses. The Texas loss, if they were to
lose to Texas won't matter. They get Penn State at home,
no Oregon. So I have Ohio State at number two,
and I'll just tell you what I'll finish it off.
I have Bam at number one as the number one seed.
Now caveat being that I don't necessarily think they're gonna
be the best during the regular season.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
They have to go to Georgia. I think they could
lose there.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
But if they get Georgia in the SEC championship game,
I like them to win on a neutral field. So
I have Bama one, Ohio State two, Clemson three, Georgia four.
Jam Martin, I know I left you very little time,
but give us your top three.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
All right, Texas at three, we already kind of discussed it,
but they have a really tough schedule. I had them
hire at first. I got Clemson at two, LSU and
out South Carolina or the only two that I really
mentioned for them. I think they may be undefeated, quite frankly,
but you know what that means. James Franklin at number one, Baby,
there you go. I'm just looking at that schedule. I'm
(40:20):
setting him up to fail, quite frankly. But I look
at him, and I look at that talent, and I'm like,
you should be number one, Bro.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Should be number one. Well, I'll tell you what. We'll
come back.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
When we do, we'll actually make our national championship picks.
And we'll also, by the way, get into a lot
of NFL Michael Parsons, Ben Johnson our AFC North picks.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
That's all. Next, Foxport Tritier.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
Come in everybody hour two towards the Martin Fox Sports Radio.
We are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios
take me up till two am Eastern time. Our buddy
Bernie Fratto up. The Bernie Fratto Show follows us No,
Bernie's got all sorts of good takes and lead up
to college football in the NFL. I'll tell you what, jamrt.
(41:09):
We're supposed to fit all this in in the last hour,
but we bled a little bit over. In about five minutes,
we'll get to the latest with Micah Parsons as Jerry Jones.
We're an interview, interesting interview over the last couple of days.
We'll do that in just a few minutes. I'll tell
you what what. We just wrapped our college football conversation
with our twelve team college football playoff. Well, we won't
(41:31):
go through the whole bracket, but give me your national champion.
Who do you like to win it all? Who do
you like to see? Who do you have them beating
to win it all as well?
Speaker 3 (41:40):
Yeah? See, I don't feel good yet about that. That's
sort of the problem. Like I have Penn State as
my number one seed, but I don't think they're going
to win the championship. I just I'm looking at them
from a regular season standpoint. I think the James Franklin
of it all is eventually going to be a thing
has to do for them. I just don't know if
(42:02):
it's gonna be there or not. Last year I went
with Texas, and this year I kind of feel the
same way. Obviously, there's figuring out exactly how arch Manning
is going to do and whether or not Sarkisian can
finally get over that hump and finish the thing. But
I look at Ohio State, there's some question marks there. Georgia.
(42:25):
I just don't feel as good about Alabama. I'm just
not sure about the boor at that job. Not that
him as a coach, but just the pressure cooker involved there.
I'm not sure that that is going to manifest properly.
Clemson I think is really good, really good, But here's
the problem. I don't think they're going to be battle
tested enough to be able to get through this thing
(42:48):
in the toughest moments. Notre Dame I really like, I'll
tell you what, I'm gonna take Texas over Notre Dame. Oh.
Speaker 8 (42:55):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (42:56):
That's gonna be my That's gonna be my national champion.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
We were a potential strip score away from that being
the national championship game last year, if you remember, because
that's right, Texas was driving strip score. Ohio State seals
the victory. So J Mart has Texas over Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
How about this.
Speaker 1 (43:12):
I don't have Penn State and I don't have either
of those teams in my championship. So and by the way,
I don't feel great about this either. I will pick
Clemson to win the National Championship over BA. You did
get there, okay, all right, yeah, I mean I just think,
to my my biggest concern about Clemson is two things.
One the battle tested thing that you mentioned, and I
(43:33):
think the other thing too is depth. Now, depth is
an issue for everybody, but we know the narrative with Clemson,
right is that they just have not through the years.
You know, they don't they don't recruit the portal. Now,
this year they did bring in about two or three guys,
four guys maybe I don't know, but they brought in some,
but certainly not the fifteen to twenty that basically everybody
(43:54):
else is taking at this point. And so it's just
are you going to have the bodies to survive three,
potentially four high leverage playoff games. So that's what concerns me,
but I think Club Nick's the truth. I think they're
going to get the first round by which helps I.
You know, I've said it a couple of times. I
think they're beating ls by the way. Worth noting you
and I neither of us had LSU in the college
football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (44:15):
So I wonder I felt like you were kind of
on the same page with me on that. That's why
I said I thought it would be A and M
if anybody else for you, Like, I know a lot
of people have LSU at like five, yeah, and all
this kind of stuff, I just don't buy. Garrett Nusmeyer,
I agree, and I'm just not sure I buy the
same way I don't buy. I'm not sure how I
feel about Kaywin de Boor in this role. I just
(44:38):
don't think Brian Kelly at LSU has worked, and I
don't think that that's all of a sudden gonna magically
change this season. I think they're gonna underperform, and I
honestly think this might be his last season there.
Speaker 1 (44:49):
So it's actually really interesting you said that, and I
wasn't even planning on getting into this.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Two things.
Speaker 1 (44:54):
One I agree with you, and it's funny, right, because
remember when he got the job and there were people
that were like, uh, you know, does he make sense
culturally there? And then there was like the counter of like,
if you're a good enough coach, doesn't matter where you
come from, and it's like, no, it it is a
little bit of a weird fit. And I'll tell you this, dude,
(45:15):
Like I don't know if you've watched any of that
SEC documentary on Netflix, but LSU is like weirdly prominently
featured in it. And I just bring it up because
the vibes just feel weird where it's just you know,
he's like this is Brian Kelly I'm talking about. He's
like one of the last, Like he's just kind of
(45:36):
always on everybody's behind, and you know, like like I
don't I don't get the sense that it would be
very fun to play for him, let me put it
that way. And I've always been a defender, and I
think one you could get away with it in the
old days because guys couldn't transfer whatever.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
And then I think even at Notre Dame, you know
it's Notre dame.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
If you commit to Notre Dame, no disrespect to LSU,
Like you're gonna stay at Notre Dame even if you
don't like the coach, because you know the value of
getting that that Notre Dame degree. So I just bring
it up because the vibes are weird. And I was
watching that thinking, like, if he goes eight and four
this year, like I do wonder if he just says,
you know what, I'm not built for this era. I
tried the sec You know, we don't know how much
(46:16):
anyone spends on anio these days, but like they clearly
spend a lot of money, a lot of guys in
the portal, and so I'm I don't trust them. The
schedule is tougher than people realize at Clemson, you know,
at Bama among other games, and I just, yeah, I
just don't buy them. So anyway, neither of us have LSU.
I have Clemson winning it all. I have them beating Bama.
(46:39):
I'll say this, j Mart, you know we're a one.
We'll find out. To your point about Kaylin de Boor
this year, I do think though Ryan Grubb being with him,
I do think is a big deal. Now listen, sure, yeah,
the quarterback is limited, but listen, a couple of things.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
One Jaylen Milroe.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
I just I don't think he was built to be
the quarterback or to be successful in that offense. Germany,
he was as good as you could expect, but we
all watch the games. We know what his limitations are,
and so ty Simpson, even if he's not quite as
naturally gifted. I do just think that it's maybe a
better fit for what they want to do. And then
I think adding Ryan Grubb, who's ben Calen de Boor's
(47:16):
right hand man, I think will be a difference. But
you know, they're not a perfect team. Nobody is a
perfect team in college football. So I have Clemson over
Alabama in the National Championship Game.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
Yeah, well look, I mean I don't think that that's
off the beaten path at all. Like I said, I
almost got Clemson there myself, and I agree with you
a million percent on Clubnik and just kind of their pathway.
And again, the thing that just worries me is just
I feel like they're going to be They're just gonna
cake walk through their schedule for the most part. South
(47:46):
Carolina is the one that I really look at because
I do think they're gonna win in Week one, So
I just I couldn't quite get there. But I like
your pick, I do you. I don't know, I might
even like it more than mine, but I'm sticking with
mine again though, By the way, and Jim, I also
saw this, By the way, I saw the odds for
coaches to be fired in college football, James Franklin's like
(48:10):
sixty to one. He's like fiftieth on the list. What
does he have to do? Like, let's say this year
doesn't go well right, Let's say they lose three four
games somehow or things just fiddle fizzle out, and he's
at least partially to blame for some decisions and all
this kind of stuff, like is he just going to
(48:31):
continue to be back? Like are they going to be
better in years future than they are this year? When
you look at their pathway and when you look at
who they brought back and what the kind of the
prospects are for those gentlemen going forward, Like I just
I was baffled by that, Like he's lower than guys
that I don't think are even close in terms of
(48:53):
dudes that can lose their job. Maybe he's just safe
as all get out and we all just need to
stay quiet about it. But I'm just kind of baffled
that Penn State, at least that the feeling is Penn
State's just going to continue to deal with this forever,
even though it's kind of been the same result over
and over again. Now if they get close, they get
near a national championship, obviously, yeah, Okay, I get it.
(49:14):
And last year he may have helped himself out a
little bit. But at the same time, like he's somebody
that almost nobody trusts and he's like sixty to one
to lose his job. Like, I feel like those are
those are kind of I would take those odds. How
about that?
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Well, And I'll tell you this too. Is a couple
of things. One, it's funny.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
I have a really good friend who's a Penn State fan,
and I actually give him credit. I think that I
think that the Penn State fan base to some degree
has been more patient than like the national discourse around them.
And I think even in the fourteen playoff ear they understood, Okay,
you know, Michigan's kind of on an all time run,
Ohio State whatever, and you know I talked to him
(49:56):
this time last year. Hey, we just got to get
into that twelve team playoff you know, if we anything after,
that's gravy. I talked to him a few weeks ago.
I texted him whatever, and he said, it's nut of
your bust.
Speaker 2 (50:07):
It's that simple. And this is a guy that's been patient.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
He's not on the message boards fire James Franklin every
time they lose the game, every time they lose a game,
and he was like, it's naut of your bust. He's like,
we have to beat Oregon at home. You know, Ohio
State's a coin toss because it's on the road. We
have to get back to Indianapolis and we have to
make a real run in the College Football Playoff. And
no disrespect, but last year you made a run, but
it was you beat SMU at home, and you beat
(50:31):
Boise Stated on a neutral and you lost to Notre Dame,
And so I bring that up, and I do think
to your point, Oh, you know, you didn't mentioned this part. Like,
let's talk about Ryan Day for a second, because I
think it's easy now to just dismiss everything that was
being discussed between the end of the Michigan game and
the end of the Tennessee game. But like he was
(50:53):
kind of in the same boat last year, and I
know no one will acknowledge it now, but if they
had lost that Tennessee game at home in the College
Football Playoff, I don't think there's a one hundred percent
chance that Ryan Day is the head football coach at
Ohio State right now. And so I just bring it
up because it's kind of the same with Penn State.
Is that, you know, my vibe on them is, you know,
(51:13):
you don't know how the playoff is gonna break, you
don't know how the bracket's gonna break. But it's like,
you have to beat somebody meaningful in the regular season.
You can't just beat a bunch of lousy teams, and
you have to beat real teams in the College Football Playoff.
You don't win a championship because you'll lose on a
one score possession to Alabama. Okay, but to your point,
if it's just another season where they beat all the
(51:34):
bad teams and have no significant wins of note, could
I could see that fan base getting to Ohio State
after the Michigan game last year levels of frustration with
James Franklin put it in.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
Yeah, And I mean, I just think the way college
football is trending now, it just feels like you're gonna
have short releases with coaches because you're spending so much
money on teams because you are buying players, and because
everything has shifted in terms of transfer and all this,
like everything has to be going well or you're potentially
going to be out of the mix for guys that
(52:04):
you want and you know guys are going to be
transferring out and all this kind of stuff, like, yeah,
there's gonna be potentially with playoff expansion and all this
easier ways maybe to you know, show your worth or
to say, you know, I've made this thing happen. I've
made my way into the playoffs now, and maybe that's
a little bit more job security or it's incentive, it's
bonus money or whatever like that. But like, I just
(52:27):
don't feel like you're going to have as long a
leash as a coach because I feel like you have
to win a lot faster now in order to maintain
the momentum that you're collective and your university now directly
is kind of putting out there if you're paying a
bunch of money for guys and they're producing to some degree,
but not to the extent like who is it going
(52:49):
to fall on It's going to fall on the guys.
Who's going to fall on the coach. I feel like,
at least first first time, I think a lot of
these bigger name coaches are going to finally like feel
the brunt of that in a way they have in
the past.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
Well, and it goes back to the Ryan Day part
of last year is that you know, we all knew.
I mean, the school was public about we paid twenty
million dollars for this roster, and so I do think
there's something there as well of the idea of you're
paying a lot of money. And I think that's the
other thing too, is I know we're going towards this
this quote unquote revshare era where the school is going
(53:21):
to be able to pay directly players, but listen, you're
still going to need booster help. And the one thing
I will say Penn State very clearly went all in
on this roster. You know, a bunch of guys that
could have gone pro Drew Aller, Nick Singleton, whoever, that
all came back. They added a bunch of guys in
the portal two or three top receivers on this year's
roster are are portal guys. So that's the other thing too,
(53:44):
is that one boosters are paying more money, and two
they might just stop.
Speaker 2 (53:49):
Giving you money if if you if you don't perform.
So I listen.
Speaker 1 (53:55):
I don't know if you would actually get fired, but
I'll just say this. I think if you again get
in as the seventh seed, as an even an eleven
and one or an eleven and two, you losing the
conference champion or you losing the conference championship game, and
then again you're the seventh seed, you're hosting you know,
some SEC team.
Speaker 2 (54:13):
And you lose. I think it's a conversation. Let me
just put it to you that way.
Speaker 1 (54:17):
Is I just I don't think it's out of the
realm of possibility, because again, all you have to do
is go back to Ryan Day last year and you
can see, like everyone can say all this stuff about
it's a new world and you're paying so much for
the players. It's like, there are you know, baseline expectations.
If you're not meeting them, people will move on to
the next thing. So all right, well we definitely didn't
(54:40):
do Micael Parsons. That's okay, we'll save it for the
top of next hour. But when we come back, we'll
get more picks because we just gave our college football
playoff pick every single week round this time. We have
been doing division by division picks in the NFL. We're
gonna knock out to today because Ja Marten isn't around.
Next week, we'll do our AFC North, our AFC out
(55:00):
predictions and picks next.

our college football playoff picks a minute ago, but this
time every week we have been giving our division by
division NFL over under win total picks. We have done
so far the entire NFC. Last week we started the
AFC with the AFC East. J Mar's gonna be out
(56:06):
next week, so we're gonna knock out too. We'll be
a little quicker today. We're gonna start with the AFC North.
Certainly very interesting. Mary, give us some music. Brandon, who
is the first team we are talking about? Alrighty, I
think you guys will figure out who the first team is.
They may have Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry on their team.
Eleven and a half, So Aaron will start with you
(56:27):
over under it's pretty high. Over under it is eleven
and a half means they have to go twelve and five.
Speaker 3 (56:34):
I'm a believer.
Speaker 2 (56:36):
Spoiler alert. You know I'll save it.
Speaker 1 (56:38):
But but I bring no, no, no, because we're doing
you know, in the Fox Sports radio studios here we
have our our Super Bowl picks and everything like that.
And let's just say I, you know, I believe in
the Ravens two degree. Obviously, that intriguing game to open
at Buffalo. But you know, it's a tough schedule. I
like the over, though eleven and a half means they
(56:59):
go twelve and five. I believe that they get there.
I think there's four very winnable games in the division.
You know a couple other easy spots on the schedule, Dolphins, Patriots,
et cetera. Go ahead, give me the Ravens to go
over eleven and a half.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
At Bills, Lions, at Chiefs, Texans, and Rams. I'm not
as sure about at Vikings. That's kind of a tricky one.
Of course, your division, you're playing the Stewards twice, You're
playing the Bengals twice as well. I like it as well.
I think they will be over even though the schedule
is tough. I think that they're built for it, obviously,
(57:36):
Lamar Derrick Henry, what they're able to do. I think
the receiving corps has improved for them as well. So,
barring injury, I think it's an easy over all.
Speaker 2 (57:45):
Right, Brandon, who's next?
Speaker 9 (57:46):
Yeah, So next up is the Bengals. I know people
question their defense, but nine and a half, je Mart
this time will start with you.
Speaker 3 (57:54):
Man Burrow is really good. That offense is absolutely loaded.
Were they last year? They were nine and eight last year,
you said that it's nine this year. Yeah, okay, all right.
I think the defense is trash. I'm gonna say under.
I just I just don't like that defense. I don't
like what I don't like what I've heard from them
(58:17):
during the offseason. I think Burrow might have an all
world season and it's not gonna matter. I just there's
something wrong there, and I don't think that they've handled
things with Hendrickson particularly well. I just don't feel good
about that side of the ball. If you can't stop people,
you're gonna have a lot of trouble in the NFL.
So I'm going under. I think they're gonna I think
they're either gonna duplicate the nine and eight or be
(58:38):
even worse than that.
Speaker 1 (58:40):
So I was ready to go over with the logic
of you know, listen, a lot of slow starts last
year started zero and three, whatever.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
But I'm looking at who they actually beat last year.
Speaker 1 (58:51):
Beat Cleveland twice, beat Tennessee, beat Dallas after dak got hurt,
beat Pittsburgh late in the year when they you know,
Russ Wilson was kind of washed at that point.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
I mean he's been washed.
Speaker 1 (59:02):
I think I said they beat the Carolina Panthers in
New York chives, they really beat basically no one of
subst Let me see real quick. I know we're a
little short on time here, but just think about these teams,
J Mart. Carolina team that picked in the top ten,
New York picked in the top ten, Cleveland obviously picked
in the top ten. Las Vegas they beat them, picked
in the top ten. Dallas they had a top ten pick.
(59:24):
I believe they took Tyler Booker. The point I'm trying
to make Tennessee they beat I guess they beat Denver
late in the year, but essentially no one of substance.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
So yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (59:33):
I was ready to say, well, maybe they start a
little bit faster, they can find two more wins on
the schedule.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
I don't see it. I'll go under as well.
Speaker 3 (59:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (59:40):
Next up is the Steelers eight and a half. And
remember when was the last time Tomlin had a who
losing season. I mean it's been close to fifteen years, right,
has he ever?
Speaker 8 (59:51):
Well?
Speaker 2 (59:51):
J Mart, you've been hot on this. You go ahead,
go first under.
Speaker 3 (59:55):
I think they might be one in three to open
the season. I think they'll beat the Jets, but then
they play Seattle, at New England and Minnesota. I don't
like that. I really don't like that at all. As
a matter of fact, maybe they're gonna be two and two,
maybe they're gonna surprise me. But they also have a
stretch where they have the Bills, the Ravens, and the
(01:00:16):
Lions three out of four games in a row. That's
not gonna be particularly easy. They've got Green Bay on
the schedule as well. They're gonna play Cincinnati twice, so
they're gonna have to deal with Joe Burrow. You've got
to play Baltimore again to end the season. I just
don't like it, man. I don't like Aaron Rodgers there.
I don't like the situation there. I don't think that
DK Metcalf is going to change much for them. I
(01:00:38):
don't think that their ground game is gonna be particularly good.
I don't even like what I've heard from from Hayward
in the offseason. I just think this is gonna be
a bad one. Man. I think they are a seven
win football team this year.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
I'll be quick.
Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
I've said this a few times. I haven't found any
of the Aaron Rodgers talk to be compelling this offseason
because I just think at forty plus years old, we
know what he is. And I was a guy, as
you know, Jamrt, I was, you know, trying to talk
myself into the Jets last year. I just think he's old.
The the you know, the the offenses, you know that
the setup is weird there. I know Toman always is
(01:01:13):
able to pull a few out of his you know what,
but I just I don't see it. I really don't.
I'll go under as well, all right in the last
team Browns four and a half over under? Was that
the over under on Shudre Sacks today or oh no, no,
no soon?
Speaker 9 (01:01:27):
I believe that's by the way, guys, I think that's
the lowest dower over under in the league. I don't
think anybody's even tied with them. Four and a half
is the because of the Saints, I believe are six
and a half. So Aaron, go first, what are your
thoughts on Cleveland? I mean, I'll go over four and
a half. Joe Flacco was won, yeah they won three
last year, but you know, Deshaun Watson was quarterback last year.
(01:01:50):
I was gonna say, like, listen, I actually flipped on
that that game was obviously Brandon would know our local game.
Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
Joe Flacco actually did play today. You forget like he
is a competent quarterback. Now he's not gonna make it
through eighteen games. Seventeen games.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
Excuse me, I get it.
Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
But I think Joe Flacco is competent and they have
good players on that team. They just don't have a
quarterback that can compete with Lamar Jackson Joe Burrow. Whatever
I do like over the four and a half, I
actually like it quite a bit. I think they're bad.
Don't get me wrong. I still think they finished last
in this division. But I mean five and twelve does
(01:02:28):
not seem like a high barrier to to get over.
Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
So listen to this. I believe that they are going
to start the season zero to six, Bengals at Ray
and his Tackers at Lions, Vikings at Steelers. I don't
think they're gonna win a single one of those games.
I think should or Senators. I'm curious. I'm more interested
to see win and if he gets his real opportunity
(01:02:53):
to start for the team. Nothing against Flacco other than
I mean he's old and there's nothing dynamic about him
at this point, he'll hold down the fort a little bit.
I just the schedule is tough. You've got eight trillion quarterbacks.
You got the GM out here saying I want to
keep four of these guys on the roster. All of
this stuff is happening. I don't like anything surrounding this team.
(01:03:14):
I think the schedule is pretty dagone tough as well.
Four and a half. I think it's under surprisingly enough,
I think there are three unders in the AFC North.
Based on those numbers, I think Baltimore will be over
and everybody else is just not gonna have a good year.
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
So jmr and I both went over on Baltimore. We
both went under on the Bengals, we both went what
under on the Steelers, and of course I went over
on the Browns. I'm a believer, not really, but J
Mark goes under the four and a half. We'll come back.
We're gonna hold our nose and we're gonna preview the
(01:03:50):
AFC South.
Speaker 2 (01:03:51):
That's next. But first, no to SAG. You're taken away,
my friend.
Speaker 7 (01:03:56):
No offense taken.
Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:03:58):
Meanwhile, the NFL exhibition season is speaking, holding your nose
just about over about eight minutes to go in Arizona
Cardinals leading the Raiders seventeen to ten. Three different quarterbacks
used by Pete Carroll's Vegas team. The other late game
as a final in the Bay Area, San Francisco over
the Chargers thirty to twenty three. This one had eight
total punts just in the first quarter. That hadn't happened
(01:04:21):
in a preseason game in a decade. Ap says the
last time in a real NFL game there were eight
punts in a first quarter was twenty seventeen. Eventually, dj
Uie along Uyanglila the third string Charger quarterback, well four
string really, but cuts are coming Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (01:04:37):
Stay tuned.
Speaker 7 (01:04:38):
He threw a pick six with about six minutes to go.
Did have a couple of touchdown passes in this game.
There were a total of twenty three penalties in this
contest and six turnovers. We'll have other football news in
about fifteen minutes. Pro and college.
Speaker 3 (01:04:55):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (01:04:55):
The college season started today with the game in the
Rain in Dublin top twenty five least acording to preseason
rankings matchup Iowa State BA Kansas State twenty four to
twenty one Kansas in the game on Fox TV whip
Fresno State thirty one to seven. Hawaii took the late
game twenty three to twenty over Stanford with two field
goals in the last two minutes. NASCAR's four hundred at
(01:05:17):
Daytona to Ryan Blaney, who won by half a car length.
In Major League Baseball at the Little League World Series,
you know we've got that going. This weekend, Las Vegas
won the US title, beating Connecticut eight to two. Let
me just get that out of the way. With Connecticut
losing today, I know Major League Baseball that is now
a final. In the late game at Seattle, the A's
in ten innings to to one over the Mariners. Cubs
(01:05:39):
won twelve one at the Angels Kyle Tucker two homers,
five RBIs. The Padres are first and alone in first
in the NLS game ahead of the Dodgers. After beating
La again five to one, five straight wins for San Diego.
The Dodger offense two for twenty nine. Tonight, Padres had
only three hits, but six walks as well. The lost
(01:05:59):
to Tailor Glass now the win to San Diego's Nest Cortes.
Padre is getting a lot of contributors that they acquired
this summer at the trade deadline. Arizona and the White
Sox each with wins. Texas and Pittsburgh as well. San
Francisco won seven to one at Milwaukee. Houston the first
place team in the Al West. Well now they're three
games over the Seattle Mariners. Houston hit three homers in
(01:06:22):
the first inning and won nine to eight. At Baltimore,
the Mets won nine to.
Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
Two at Atlanta.
Speaker 7 (01:06:27):
The Mets hit six home runs tonight, the Braves had
only five hits, five for thirty one at the plate.
Aaron Nola was one and seven for the Phillies, but
went six innings and got the win in Philly tonight,
six to four, the final over Washington, but phil star
pitcher Zach Wheeler will miss six to eight months. He's
two for a second shoulder surgery. Detroit won its fifth
(01:06:48):
in a row, four to two over Kansas City. For Toronto,
first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Junior was out again with hamstring inflammation.
The Jays did win in twelve innings at Miami, seven
to six, and the Yankees have lost eight straight to
the Red Sox head to head, They were beaten twelve
to one in New York today, the Red Sox got
seven runs in the top of the ninth. Winning pitcher
Garrett Crochet eleven strikeouts in his seven innings. He's fourteen
(01:07:11):
and five.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
Back to you, Thank you very much, Steve de Sager.
As de Saga mentioned, he'll be back in just a
few minutes with his extended update. Cannot wait to hear
more from the Saga, especially about Week zero in college football.
This is Fox Sports Radio aer towards Jason Martin, broadcasting
live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. Let's continue our
preview the AFC South a conference all your mother could love.
(01:07:34):
Let's our division all your mother could love. Let's let's
keep it going. Brandon, who's up for who's up first?
Speaker 8 (01:07:41):
In this?
Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:07:41):
I think I know who?
Speaker 9 (01:07:42):
Well we I think we all know who's up first.
It's about who's up second. But Texans nine and a half, Aaron,
what are your thoughts there?
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
Nine and a half? Yes, nine and a half.
Speaker 1 (01:07:53):
There's just so many winnable games in the division, because
I mean it is obviously a first play schedule open
at the Rams at Baltimore. Ran de Deutch just San
Francisco forty nine ers. I gotta go over. I mean,
there's just you know, it's hard to find seven losses
on this schedule, even as you play some of the
best teams in the AFC at Kansas City, Buffalo at home.
(01:08:14):
Go ahead and give me the over of nine and
a half.
Speaker 3 (01:08:17):
Yep, I agree exactly the same reason. It's just I
don't see enough losses. There's definitely some games that they
are gonna lose. They may get close to that as
a matter of fact, but I just don't see a
world where they're gonna blow enough games to fall under.
Somebody's got to be over in the division, so I
like them one.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Next up, we have a tie.
Speaker 3 (01:08:40):
Guys.
Speaker 9 (01:08:40):
Oh, it's weird because I saw the Colts over under
win total. It's actually seven and a half, which seems
shockingly high on BETHAMGM.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
So j Mart, we'll start with you. What are your
thoughts on seven and a half over under Colts?
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Who's a quarterback, Daniel Jones under? What more do you think?
I mean, really, I'm like, seriously, I know we're gonna
have more discussion about the Colts a little bit later,
but I just why would I like the Colts this year? Like,
there's nothing about that team. That's interesting at all. That
was an eight win team last year, and I think
(01:09:14):
they'll be worse.
Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Yeah, it's funny.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
I was telling a buddy yesterday they played Miami at
home in Week one, and I could see them winning
that game. There's always like a random result in week
one that everyone's like, oh, you know, maybe we were
all And it's like, I could see it Indie Indie
beating Miami in Week one, maybe maybe relatively convincingly, and
US and not us, but the narrative being, oh, you know,
(01:09:38):
maybe Daniel Jones does justin. It is a change of scenery,
and it's like and then they'll lose four straight after that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
So I am with you.
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
I'm going under.
Speaker 1 (01:09:46):
Like I said, I think they'll probably win Week one
and people will start to hey, is.
Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
This were we wrong about them? No, we weren't wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
Though they stink. Daniel Jones stinks. This team stinks. I
cannot believe the numbers this high. I'm going under as well.
Speaker 9 (01:10:01):
Yeah, and it takes a while sometimes to figure that out.
The Saints last year were like three or four and
oh and then they you know, went downhill from there
two and oh maybe rather than they dominated the Cowboys.
All right, let's go to the Jaguars, tied with the
Colts seven and a half, Aaron over under.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
You know, I'll say this I was thinking about this,
is that.
Speaker 1 (01:10:18):
If Trevor Lawrence, you know, can't really get it going
with Liam Cohen, like second offensive head coach, obviously after
Doug Peterson, you know, I would start to wonder if
it's just never gonna happen. I mean, the stats were
pretty underwhelming last year. Obviously, Travis Hunters a little bit
of a help. What is the number again, Brandon.
Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
Seven and a half? They went four and thirteen last year. Good,
that's gracious.
Speaker 1 (01:10:49):
I'll go I'll go a slight over at eight and nine,
maybe nine and eight. I don't think they're significantly better
than that, but I'll say they're a little bit better
offensive head coach coming in. I know Doug Pearson was
as well, but Liam Cohen young mind, Travis Hunter new weapon.
Speaker 2 (01:11:07):
I'll say slightly over at eight and nine.
Speaker 3 (01:11:10):
Sure, man, I'm looking at the schedule. I'm just like,
where are the nine wins coming from?
Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
You gotta get a problem, right, it's seven and a half,
seven and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:11:18):
Yeah, Oh okay, Well even where they eight wins coming from. Yeah,
And I don't know about Liam Cohen. I have no idea.
I'm very the ceiling on Trevor Lawrence is dropping by
the by the week. Just in my own brain, can
I get to over. I'm gonna go against you. I'm
(01:11:39):
gonna say under. I just I don't know why I
should feel that much better. I agree with you on Hunter.
I think he's gonna be really fun to watch. I
just don't know that Jacksonville is gonna be a place
that's really gonna be able to feature him in terms
of a playoff run or anything like that. So I
just it's year one for Liam Cohen. I just I
don't like the new coach situation that he's walked into there.
(01:12:02):
So I'm under.
Speaker 9 (01:12:03):
And they all play the NFC West, by the way,
so that's a tough division to play. Titans last five
and a half, J Martin, you go first.
Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
I mean, they were obviously atrocious last year in every way.
I'm gonna say over, not because I think they're gonna
be that much better. I just think they've got an
actual quarterback now and that can actually carry them a
little bit. There's not gonna be a lot of film
on cam Ward this season, so this might be the
(01:12:33):
best year for him, at least if it's not gonna
go well, this will be the year. It's still a
weak division. I look at the rest of their schedule.
I don't think it's that great. It's not a huge
win total for me. So you go over Jacksonville. I'll
go over Tennessee really.
Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
Quick, j Mark, because this is right in your wheelhouse.
You live in Tennessee, you're a Broncos fan. Week one,
Tennessee at Denver. Could you see the cam.
Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
Ward not a lot of film? Three passing touchdowns, one
rushing touchdown in the upset. Could you see that happening?
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
No, just because I don't think Sean Payton's the kind
of coach that's going to allow that. And it's a
tough place to go play in Week one. But your
question's not off base, like it's definitely it's definitely a
trouble spot. It's the kind of game that Denver could
sleep on and lose.
Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
All right, I will go. I'll go.
Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
What'd you say, five and a half? Five and a half, Yes,
I'll go. I'm feeling very generous today. I went over
on Jacksonville over on Cleveland. I'll go over on Denver's
or not Denver, over on Tennessee as well. I listen,
I know some of the you know, some of the
stuff is cliche, but I you know, all the press
conference clips of like cam Ward like, yeah, my dad
(01:13:44):
woke up at four point thirty, and I need to
do the same. And it's like I, I do think
those kinds of guys can have a galvanizing effect in
a locker room. And so I will go slightly over.
I'm not picking him to win the division anything like that. Yes,
I will go over on the Tennessee Titans as well.
So all right, so let me see if I got
this right. We both went over on Houston. We both
(01:14:09):
went well. I went over on No. No, we both
went over on Houston. We both went under on Indy.
I went over on Jacksonville, you went under.
Speaker 3 (01:14:19):
We both went over on Tesse.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
All right, eight divisions, eight teams today, we have now
what seven of eight divisions down? Jamr You're out next week,
so we will do our final divisional preview next not
next Saturday. Two saturdays from now, leading into week one,
we'll get to the very interesting AFC West. We just
mentioned the Broncos. Probably heard that team in case pretty good,
(01:14:45):
so too are the Los Angeles Chargers. Fox Sports Radio
Era Toords, Jason Martin will come back, Steve de Sager.
Oh man, he's got so much good stuff from week
zero in the world of college football and much much more.
Speaker 3 (01:14:57):
This is.
Speaker 2 (01:15:01):
Welcome back, everybody.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
Fox Sports Radio, Eric Tors Jason mart broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
It is twelve forty five Eastern time.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
Yes, we are live, and as we do every week
around this time, let's get it over the news desk.
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
Steve de Sager, what is trending?
Speaker 7 (01:15:18):
College football season started today and the NFL preseason is
about to end. Two minutes left in Arizona Cardinals twenty
to ten over the Raiders. There's been some great punting
in this game. Goh twelve total punts and about a
fifty one yard average.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
And DJ Weunglo a couple of nice arm punts as well,
throwing them right to the other team.
Speaker 7 (01:15:36):
Yes, that was the Charger loss at San Francisco where
there were eight punts in the first quarter of that game.
We did have the game in Dublin to start the
college football season number twenty two. Iowa State beat preseason
seventeen Kansas State twenty four to twenty one. Quarterback Rock
obecked with three total touchdowns and the k State QB
Avery Johnson three total touchdowns. Iowa State only one penalty
(01:15:59):
in this game in an opener that is very impressive.
The score was tied seven to seven late third quarter,
four total fumbles in the ruin then the game at
UNLV and on back to back touchdowns with about ten
minutes left and an interception in between. Vegas beat Idaho
State thirty eight to thirty one. Idaho State had five
hundred and fifty five yards of offense, but through four
interceptions for the Rebels, Jaden Thomas on ten carries one
(01:16:23):
hundred forty seven yards three scores. Kansas was hosting a
game on Fox TV tonight. It was the reopening of
Kansas Football Stadium after construction. Jayhawks beat Fresno State thirty
one to seven. In the loss e j Warner, son
of Kurt Warner, two interceptions, Jalen Daniels that's Jalen with
an l in the middle, three touchdown passes for the Jayhawks.
(01:16:43):
He was eighteen of twenty for one hundred and seventy
six yards Western Kentucky at home, trailed in the third
quarter but beat Sam Houston forty one twenty four Maverick McIvor,
one of the great quarterback names of the season, three
touchdown passes over four hundred yards through the air plus
a touchdown ron And what a win for Hawaii at
home twenty three to twenty over Stanford, which missed a
(01:17:05):
thirty four yard field goal attempt in the first half.
Hawaii kicked two field goals in about the last two
minutes to take the opener. Coming up Friday, the twenty ninth,
Auburn at Baylor on Fox TV, and of course, number
one Texas plays at number three Ohio State next Saturday
on Fox, and there will be a Utah at UCLA
game late that night. But Texas is number one an
(01:17:26):
apiece preseason college football poll, barely ahead of number two
Penn State. Out of the sixty five first place votes,
Texas received twenty five. Penn State got twenty three in
the coaches poll. By the way, Texas and Ohio State
are one to two again. Texas opens at Ohio State
big noon kickoff noon Eastern on Fox. Ohio State in
AP is number three. Texas amazingly had never started the
(01:17:49):
year's crazy to have in the AP poll. They started
the number two five times, and here they are starting
at number one and they are not favored.
Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
That is weird.
Speaker 1 (01:17:58):
Yeah, and I think it's also the first time on
the road a number one team in the country has
opened as an underdog. I could be wrong that I
saw some weird stat about that as well, which is.
Speaker 7 (01:18:07):
To intend to believe that because usually your opener isn't this, No,
not going to Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
And even if it's a good team, it's not Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (01:18:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:18:16):
Maybe back to as far as results, I can remember
a Florida State's Miami opener many years ago where there
were probably top five each and there might have been
a loss by a number one. But these Buckeys are
preseason top five for the ninth straight year. And by
the way, all twelve teams from last year's playoff are
ranked in this year's AP preseason Top twenty five, including
(01:18:37):
number sixteen SMU, which is preseason ranked for the first
time in forty years. AP's preseason All Americans include three
players from Texas, three from Penn State, including running back
Nicholas Singleton. The first team quarterback is Clemson's kid Club Nicks,
So say it already out loud. Heisman candidate for this year.
Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love also a first teamer
(01:18:59):
on the All American squad, as is Ohio state wide
receiver Jeremiah Smith. And you were talking about Steelers. They
had their exhibition finale on Thursday night. It was quarterback
Aaron Rodgers did not play again. Mason Rudolph started, had
one interception. They won at Carolina, which finished zher to
three in the preseason. The backup QB for the Panthers,
(01:19:20):
Andy Dalton, did not play due to a strained elbow.
Bryce Perkins, the UFL MVP, played the second half of
that one. Giants over the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
Tommy DeVito three touchdown passes second half. Rookie Jackson Dart
looked good again at early touchdown path.
Speaker 1 (01:19:37):
Thank you very much, Steve de Seger. Uh yeah, got
another hour left, a lot to discuss. Uh yeah, we're.
Speaker 7 (01:19:45):
Taking a breath before because it's Thursday. Remember, we shot
out games for real on college.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
As you mentioned, a couple big ones Friday because Baylor Alburn.
Speaker 2 (01:19:54):
You know what I mean to tell you. Auburn loses
that game. Oh, it's a you know, it could be.
Speaker 1 (01:19:58):
A long flight back for Hugh Freeze. And then also
Colorado Georgia Tech. Colorado's actually mentioned, you know, favorites underdogs.
Colorado is a home underdog to Georgia Tech. And I'm
not sure that Colorado's gonna fall off as much as
people think. So it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun.
And then Saturday, and then Sunday, Miami Notre Dame. Monday,
(01:20:18):
Bill Belichick's debut with the North Carolina Tarios. Fox Sports Radio.
The one tough game right on the schedule. I saw
Cowherd say the other day, it's their schedule. Sounds like
the US News and World Report. It's like cal Stanford.
Speaker 3 (01:20:32):
Whoever.
Speaker 1 (01:20:33):
Anyway, Fox Sports Radio Air Torris, Jay spart will come back.
Speaker 2 (01:20:36):
We'll finally talk Micah Gate. That's next.
Speaker 1 (01:20:38):
Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in everybody, hour three tours and Martin.
Fox Sports Radio. We are broadcasting live from the Fox
Sports Radio studios, taking.
Speaker 2 (01:20:53):
You up till two am Eastern time.
Speaker 1 (01:20:55):
Bernie Fredo of The Bernie Fredo Show follows us cannot
wait to hear what Bernie has to say about Uh,
busy week in sports.
Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
It's you know, it's moving fast. We got preseason, we
got week zero, we got Week one of college football.
Speaker 3 (01:21:12):
Next week.
Speaker 2 (01:21:12):
Week one of the NFL is just around the corner.
Speaker 3 (01:21:15):
It's cut one. Mid season is ending.
Speaker 2 (01:21:17):
Oh what is that?
Speaker 3 (01:21:18):
Second second half of the season starts next week. Here's
been a mid season break. We've been out for like
two three Yeah, I have become one.
Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
Yes, Well that's why I'm asking what what is the
big mid season?
Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
Like, well, they take a break for about three weeks,
kind of reset, and then come back for the second
half of the season. There's just a man, there's a
lot going on. It's it's a heck of a lot
of fun. And there's actually a battle right now for
who's gonna win driver Championship this year between two guys
on the exact same team, and like they're friends, but
you can see this rivalry and like they're kind of
(01:21:51):
getting more aggressive towards one another and the team is
trying to kind of keep it together, and it's it's
it's a fun deal. Like the fact that college football
is coming back to the exact same tome as f one,
It's gonna be good times for me.
Speaker 1 (01:22:03):
I'm trying to think of I feel like there's a
sports exit, like a football or basketball example of that
that I'm blanking on, where like frenemies that are really
starting to turn the roundles, I don't know. I thought
I had one off the top of my head, but
I can't think what I feel like there's one right
on the tip of my tongue that I can't quite
put together.
Speaker 2 (01:22:19):
So all right, I know who definitely aren't front of
me is right now?
Speaker 3 (01:22:24):
Yeah, that's a good SiGe.
Speaker 1 (01:22:26):
Jerry Jones and Michael Parsons. Okay, so listen, this thing
has been weird.
Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
We know what the deal is.
Speaker 1 (01:22:34):
We know that Michael Parsons wants a new contract. We
know that Jerry Jones basically insinuates that a deal was done.
We know that the agent got involved. We know Jerry
doesn't want the agent involved.
Speaker 8 (01:22:43):
We know that.
Speaker 1 (01:22:44):
Frankly, let's be honest, it's twenty twenty five and agents
get involved in this stuff, and so.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
And you got Schotenheimer involved now too. Commenting on what
Michael Parsons did in the final preseason game on Friday, nights,
so there's that also sitting out there.
Speaker 1 (01:22:57):
It is definitely a very interesting time in Dallas. And
it's interesting because because when I was traveling this week,
you know, you wake up on a Friday morning and
you just see that there is an interview.
Speaker 2 (01:23:14):
That's taken over and listen. I know we kind of
joke about Stephen A.
Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
Smith sometimes, but he's a very prominent voice in our industry,
maybe the most prominent voice, and that's not a bad thing.
He got to sit down with Jerry and there was
a lot that came out of it. But I think
probably the most noteworthy quote that caught everybody's attention was
this Mary Mack play the sound.
Speaker 8 (01:23:34):
We wanted to send the details to the agent. The
agent soldier asked, well, we've got this the resolved in
my mind for the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:23:45):
Not doing the old mother dad deal.
Speaker 8 (01:23:48):
How many times have you seen the little rascal so
clever go in there and Mama told him you're not
going to get it, and goes into Daddy, who only
sees him that after five and afternoon wants to love
him and says, you can have it, son, you can
have that before dinner. And he goes back in and says,
Mam and Daddy said, I can have it. That's mom
(01:24:08):
and Dad had been around since the beginning the time.
Speaker 3 (01:24:11):
I'm not gonna go for that year. That's what's happening.
What in the world.
Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
Very contentious from Jerry Jones. I have a thought, but
I'll give you the floor first. J mart on what
has certainly become an interesting topic here over the last
couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:24:27):
This right here is this right here is Jerry Jones
Lifeblood's like listening to that he is more excited about
this than any when the Dallas Cowboys will have all
year long. I hate to say that I believe, but
I mean, what else am I supposed to say? Listen
to that he was into it. You could hear the
passion in it and all that stuff, and it sounded
(01:24:48):
like the perfect It was like everything is Micah's agent's fault.
Like he's trying not to even put it on Micah.
He's trying to create somebody else to blame it on,
but also to defend himself completely because he had looked
so bad going into this interview. You didn't really learn
anything new here because we already knew that the agent
(01:25:10):
and Jerry were not on the same page because Jerry
doesn't want anything to do with the agent. He also
said during the interview, you know, we own Michael Partsons
for the next three years, and some people raise their
eyebrows and NFL players former players who raised their eyebrows
say you own him and all this kind of stuff
and tried to take it there. It's like, dude, he
owns him because he is the one paying him. He's suggested.
(01:25:31):
He's not saying don't take it to a place, he's
not taking it too, there's no need to do that,
but he's saying it. Ultimately, I'm the one with the
leverage because I'm the one that has his rights right
now because I've paid him in the contract and rookie
deal and all this other kind of stuff. But at
the same time, am I supposed to believe Jerry Jones? No,
(01:25:52):
absolutely not. I mean, I think this is great tabloid,
great fodder. I also think that it's an embarrassment for
a team if they were, you know, on the cusp
of winning something. Luckily, in this case, the Dallas Cowboys,
they're not They're they're not good. They're not going to
(01:26:13):
be important at all. To anything that matters this season.
So this is going this is kind of their Super Bowl, man.
Like sometimes you have that team that's the small school
that is getting paid by the big university to go
play them, and they go beat them and they end up,
you know, getting the money to fund their athletic department
for the next year. That's kind of what this is. Like,
(01:26:35):
this right here is this is all you got, man.
This is not about football. It hasn't been about football
for a while. I don't think. The only thing I'll say,
and then I do want your thoughts on this last
point is I don't I do think that Micah Parsons
is starting to look worse. I don't know that it's
(01:26:57):
because of Jerry, but like the whole deal with Shottenheimer,
right like you had Micah throwing the gesture to the
phone when the fans had come to play for the Falcons,
but then you know he was sitting or he's laying
on the bench, and Shottenheimer's quote was I need to
figure out what he was doing and why he was
doing it, So I'm not going to talk about it
until I find that out. So he doesn't understand like
(01:27:19):
what the guy was doing it's a great coaching hire.
You've definitely got You've definitely got the pulse of the
franchise in the hands of somebody that the players respect.
But I do think that Parsons is now coming across
in a way that his agent may have tried to
shield him from, if that makes any sense. I do
want your thoughts now, though.
Speaker 2 (01:27:40):
Now a couple of things.
Speaker 1 (01:27:41):
One that's actually my takeaway as well, And it's very
clear that I think Jerry, whether he actually accomplished it
or not, I think he was tired of the narrative
being one way and he's just gonna say, listen, I'm
gonna I'm gonna get this out there on the biggest
platform that I can get it out there on, and
I'm gonna get out my side of events and my
version of events, whether people like it or not.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
So I don't have a problem with that.
Speaker 1 (01:28:03):
I do agree it, and I think it's getting to
the point because you know, I mean, listen, if if
Micah and Jerry did agree to a number, it does
make Michael look bad in some degree in either one
went back on his word or two. You know, the
agent is trying to manipulate the situation. Or have too
much control. So I do agree with you. Is that
(01:28:24):
I remember talking about this. I think it was two
weeks ago, j mart of, you know, I felt like
this was really one of the first ones where one
of the first kind of holdout deals where the ownership,
you know, cause usually fans are just like, dude, agree
to a contract, get back to camp.
Speaker 2 (01:28:40):
We don't want to deal with this, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:28:42):
And I bring it up because I remember talking to
us about talking about this a few weeks ago where
we said, like, this feels like one of the first
ones where it's like Jerry kind of looks weird and
Micah looks like the good guy. And I do think
that has flipped a little bit now. I also bring
that up to say, as I was watching this, and
I was thinking about what you just said about the
(01:29:04):
you know, we own him for three years, and you know,
without the undertones that come with it, you know, the
insinuation is like, you know, we could franchise tag him
if we want to.
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
And I guess my point is like, isn't that.
Speaker 1 (01:29:16):
Weren't these the exact same conversations that we've had over
the last couple of years with Dak not so much
CD because he kind of signed during the you know,
I forget when it was, but it wasn't like right
before the season. And I remember even like the first
Dak negotiation, which it was just like, you know, it
was the same thing. Well, they could just franchise tag
him for two more years, and the deal always gets done.
(01:29:39):
And so this just is giving me big vibes of
last year where it's like, what's going on, what does
it mean?
Speaker 2 (01:29:44):
What does it not mean? This that the other thing?
And then you know.
Speaker 1 (01:29:48):
Opening I think last year with Dak, I believe it was,
you know, the morning of Week one it got done.
And I don't know if Jerry was the hero or
not because he made Dak the highest paid player of
the history of the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:30:00):
But I just bring it up because to me, it's
giving me those vibes.
Speaker 1 (01:30:03):
W We're gonna talk about it, talk about it, talk
about it, and then before the season it will get done.
Speaker 2 (01:30:09):
And again I think it will be by Jerry's design.
Speaker 1 (01:30:12):
I don't know, you know, like he'll probably overpay because
he overpays for everybody, but I don't know. I just
I do feel like a lot of this reminds me
of previous Cowboys negotiations that you know, most of them
don't go this deep into training camp. Some of them
have felt contentious, and yet they always seem to get
done before it's all said and done.
Speaker 3 (01:30:32):
Yeah, I mean the other thing, the only other thing
that I would say is it does not come across
to me like Jerry Jones is not it does not
want to pay Michael Parsons. Sure, that's the one other
part about this where it's like, you know, when you
see pay the man and all this kind of stuff,
I don't think that's the issue here, Like there's something
else going on. And yes, I think that Jerry is
(01:30:54):
milking this for all it's worth. But at the same time,
like whatever's going on with the agent, Like the one
thing that you can't say, it's not like he's trying
to pay him less or he doesn't see his value
or anything like that doesn't make any sense at all,
Like it comes across like we tried to pay him
the most that anybody that's not a quarterback's ever been
paid in this league and the agent told us to
(01:31:16):
shove it, and all this other kind of stuff Like
I don't know what more the owner is supposed to
do than pay the guy, Like, what what is missing
in this situation? And then you know, steven A even
mentioned to his credit, you know, I reached out to
the agent to mugu Leta, and I reached out to
(01:31:37):
Micah to have them on the show, and both of
them declined. So it's like, so we're only getting one
side of this, and it's coming from Jerry Jones, And
I mean, that's exactly what he should do in this case.
But I do think this narrative has shifted at least
a little bit in the favor of the organization because
I'm not sure what is being gained by the silent
treatment coming from Michael Parsons camp. Like everything he's doing
(01:31:58):
is coming across very so because we don't know, we're
not getting his side like his agent's supposed to, you
would think kind of frame it in his favor. And
I just right now, two weeks ago, I was all
Micah Parsons. Right now, I'm not anywhere close to that
because I just don't really see I don't see the
(01:32:20):
end game for them. I don't know what they are
trying to get that they weren't being offered, if that
makes sense.
Speaker 1 (01:32:25):
One hundred and I think the other thing too, that
does you know I do think about is that. And
I've said this about everything from a head coach to
a GM to whatever. Is I think when people have
a certain job title, there are baseline expectations that they
are competent and good at their job. And so I
just bring it up because it's not as though we
(01:32:47):
don't have examples of an agent not knowing what he's doing. Uh,
we go back two months NBA draft Ace Bailey agent,
we're not doing this, we're not doing that, And it
was like, you know, it might have cost as Bailey money.
I mean, he still went whatever, third or fourth, but
it's like, you know, I think there's this notion that,
like again that every agent is totally buttoned up, has
(01:33:09):
their crap together whatever. And I just wonder if this
might be a guy and I don't know much about
his background. I you know, again I don't, I don't
want to whatever. But is he just misplaying the situation.
I'm not saying he's incompetent or incapable of doing the job,
but is he misplaying this situation? Because again, to your point,
like you said, it feels like that they've lost a
(01:33:30):
little bit of control of the narrative.
Speaker 2 (01:33:32):
And then, oh, by the way, I think here's the
other thing.
Speaker 1 (01:33:34):
If you have nothing to hide, why are you not
taking advantage of the biggest platform available to you in
sports media?
Speaker 2 (01:33:40):
And Steven A. Smith, So I don't know if you
want to piggyback off that at all.
Speaker 3 (01:33:42):
No, I mean, that's it. It's just like, what are
you staying quiet for? Like what what is the benefit
to not telling us your side of the new things
that are coming out here? Like you staying silent at
this point is not making you more money. It's just
kind of becoming tiresome. It's becoming irritating to watch this,
and less so because of Dallas because at the very
(01:34:05):
least Jerry Jones is going to tell you his perspective
on this, and if he's wrong, then you should be
want to shout from the rooftops that that's a complete
lie because and Stephen A said this, He's right, somebody
is lying here, Like one of these two parties is
not being fully transparent about how this thing has gone,
Like somebody is in the wrong and the way that
(01:34:27):
this has been done. I've only heard it from one side.
Maybe Michael Parsons or his agent, maybe they have something
compelling to offer, But as of right now, Jerry Jones'
story goes unchecked, like there's nobody there to say that
what he's saying is wrong, and it kind of sounds
plausible to me.
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
I agree one hundred percent. Will wrap on this.
Speaker 1 (01:34:49):
Do you think Michael Parsons is on the field week
one with a new deal for the Dallas Cowboys so
about see?
Speaker 3 (01:34:54):
I do, yes. I still think it's gonna get done
because I think that ultimately what we are talking about,
his agent knows this. I don't know that. I don't
know that he's fully come to grips with the fact
that what he's trying to pull may not actually work.
But do I think that Michael Parsons is not going
to be out there in week one? I don't see
(01:35:14):
a universe for that because I don't see how that
benefits Michael Parsons. I don't think he's just gonna sit out,
and I just I think the reputational damage and all
that kind of stuff. Yeah, I think somehow this is
going to get worked out.
Speaker 1 (01:35:28):
We will see Dallas Cowboys open up about ten days
from now. Remember, of course, they have that Thursday night
game against the Philadelphia Eagles to open the season. Fox

Let's go ahead and dive into some other NFL related
news and notes. Jmar you brought this to my attention today.
I think it's actually a very interesting topic. So Ben
(01:36:56):
Johnson a new head coach with the Chicago Bears, and listen,
I have enjoyed, you know, the accountability that he brings,
you know, the the you know, toughness is not the
right word, but you know, he's definitely you know, he's
gotten the message about what hasn't worked in Chicago and
(01:37:18):
basically is trying to do the opposite.
Speaker 2 (01:37:21):
And to me, just to be fair, it feels genuine.
Speaker 1 (01:37:24):
I think sometimes guys just try to do the opposite
when they get a head coaching job because they think
it's the right thing to do. I think this is
who it is. I think this is who he is,
and I think part of it is coming up under
Dan Campbell. But also, you know, I just I don't know,
I just get the vibe that he is being his true,
genuine self.
Speaker 8 (01:37:41):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:37:41):
I bring it up because after the game today they
played their third preseason game. This was the Chicago Bears
against the Kansas City Chiefs, a lot of backups whatever.
They ended up winning twenty nine to twenty seven. Actually,
but after the game, Ben Johns said a couple of
different things, most notably offensively, the first two possessions were
really sloppy football that has played us in and out
(01:38:03):
of camp so far, and unfortunately that's what we got
here tonight. He went on to say. It was disappointing
for me offensively, for sure. I thought that we had
worked our way out of that. If the first quarter
was really any indication, it's just not good enough. So
we've got to get better in a hurry. Good news
is we will be able to look at this tape
and coach it up with our guys, and I think
(01:38:23):
it's out of our system. Hopefully going into the regular season.
We got to make sure that we start faster on
offense and defense. You heard these quotes and had a
very interesting take on it. I want you to share
it rather than me just giving away the punchline here.
Speaker 3 (01:38:36):
So I asked the question to you, and it was
and I was just like, am I crazy to be
thinking this? Because I might be right, I might be
entirely off base about this. I might be reading it wrong,
or maybe I just came to it in the wrong
frame of mind. I'm not sure what it was, but
I have seen this now and you talked about kind
(01:38:58):
of how he has talked and how he's been kind
of transparent. He's I feel like he's been very candid,
but is he being a little too candid before he
ever coaches an actual regular season game, Like there's like this,
there's like this arrogance to it that that's kind of
off putting. I'm not really sure, like I want him
(01:39:19):
to be honest, but at the same time, like we've
never seen him coach an actual game. We've seen him
as a coordinator with a ton of talent on both
sides of the ball. Both those coordinators got jobs, but
Dan Campbell was the culture setter there and now he
is coming into this role. But I don't recall Dan
Campbell talking.
Speaker 8 (01:39:40):
Like this.
Speaker 3 (01:39:42):
Beforehand, Like he talked about eating kneecaps and all that
kind of stuff, but like that was just that was
part of the culture thing. This is this is kind
of how I phrase it to you. It's just like
there's a little bit of I'm a genius and if
my stuff doesn't work, it's because he's got a good
enough That's interesting. That's sort of how it felt to
(01:40:03):
me reading it. It's like I want it known that
I know what I'm doing, and so I'm going to
be uber critical about what's happening on the field. That way,
you don't place the blame on me. You look at Caleb,
or you look at this, or you look at what's
happening on the field, but you recognize that I'm the guy,
like you recognize that my brain is gigantic and my
(01:40:23):
football IQ is off the charts. Like I said, maybe
I am completely wrong. And look, you can bury me
on social media if you want to, if you think
that I'm off base on here, because you may be
one hundred percent right. There's just something about this that
kind of soured me a little bit, Like, dude, you
don't have to say all the things that you were saying.
And I feel like it's a little bit of a shot.
(01:40:44):
It's like, oh, some people say, oh, he's pointing this
to the roster. I just don't know that that's necessary.
I just like, let's get a little further into your
actual head coaching tenure, because I've seen a whole lot
of offensive geniuses get jobs and fail as hey coaches
same thing on the defensive side of the ball. I'm
not saying he's going to fail, matter of fact, I
(01:41:05):
don't think that he is. But at the same time,
like I just feel like he's he is he is
creating a lot of room, a lot of runway for
himself at the expense of his guys, and I'm not
sure that that's the way to go here.
Speaker 1 (01:41:20):
Yeah, I'll say this is that you know, this is
one uh by the way you did mention. If you
want to get if you want to crush JMR on social.
Speaker 2 (01:41:27):
Media, that's just due.
Speaker 1 (01:41:28):
That's uh J Mart at J Mart Radio, I am
at Aaron Underscore Torres. Feel free to criticize us both.
Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
I'll say this.
Speaker 1 (01:41:38):
You know, I don't I'll say this. I don't get
the vibe that it's from a place of arrogance. But
what I will say is that I think any type
of you know, coaching leadership whatever, there does have to
be a push pull balance, right like like we kind
of talked about it earlier with Brian Kelly, but like
you can be tough and not just like annoyingly tough,
(01:42:02):
you know, and you can be you can be a quote,
you know, Dan Campbell's probably a players coach who the
players also know, Hey, you know, if I let this
guy down, he's gonna let me have it. And you know,
I guess that's kind of where I am with Ben
Johnson is I like that he's creating accountability. I just
wonder how long can he keep doing this? How long
(01:42:26):
can he keep up this this? You know, I don't
think again, I don't think it's a shtick, but how
long can he keep this up? Before, you know, before
guys just start to tune it out. And by the way,
maybe they win, maybe they start five and oh they
play Vikings Monday night football. You know, maybe it all
starts well and it's it's a moot point. And you know,
he's a genius and let's give him all the credit
in the world. He turned things around in one offseason.
(01:42:48):
But the counter to that is, you know, if they
start off one and three, all of a sudden, it's
gonna be like, you know, here we go again. You know,
this guy tried to be the tough guy and look
at where it got him. So I think that to
me is more where I'm at on it is that
it's good to be a tough guy and accountability guy.
You know, maybe not a player's coach, but at some
(01:43:11):
point there does have to be the push pull of
you know whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:43:16):
And I'll just be quick and I'll wrap this.
Speaker 1 (01:43:17):
Because I'm kind of rambling at this point, but like,
we've all worked for bosses that are just jerks, and
we've all worked for bosses that are really nice. And
I think the best kind of bosses are the ones
that if they have to come down on you and
you screwed up, they let you know. But they also,
you know, positive reinforcement whatever, And so I guess maybe
behind the scenes there is some positive reinforcement, but at
(01:43:40):
least publicly, it does not appear to be all that much.
And I guess that would be my point. Is this
all sounds great in the preseason. You start one in three,
I think people will say, oh, you know, so much
for the Ben Johnson tough guys stick.
Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
If it doesn't end up working out, yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (01:43:56):
Think it's more just like when he comments is all
about them. It's not about him. It's not that the
coach we need to coach him a little bit better.
It's like, maybe, you know, I thought our schemes were
a little better than this, but uh, maybe we instituted
too much too fast, or just any I don't know.
That's just example, but anything where he's kind of pointing
(01:44:17):
at himself and at the staff I think that it's
easier to criticize others when you first criticize yourself or
you include them in it, even if you're doing it
to kind of soften the critique a bit or at
least come across that balance that you're talking about, that
push pull that you're talking about. The way that you
accomplished that is by including yourself to some degree and
(01:44:38):
just being like, look, I'm not perfect either, Like there's
many things that we could do on this staff to
put them in better chances to succeed. We're just not
functioning the way we need to on the field. We're
not functioning exactly the way we need to on the sidelines. Luckily,
it's a preseason. We're trying to figure this whole thing out.
We're gonna be ready to go week one. We're gonna
get better as we move along, like something to that effect.
(01:44:58):
But you don't ever get that first part. You won't
only get the man we sunk on the field, And like,
that's the only part of it where I'm just kind
of like, okay, like you you mentioned it right, you
start one to three. It's like, because of the way
all of this has been framed, it's like creating this
(01:45:18):
mindset amongst anybody that is actually reading this, listening to it,
paying attention to what's happening in Chicago, and you're just
kind of like, well, that teem's not very good. At
least they're not firing on all cylinders right now. Ben
ben Jonson's doing all he can. Like that, that's sort
of it's just kind of drumming that into your head
over and over with his comments, and I just I
(01:45:38):
don't love it. I got to say I don't love.
Speaker 2 (01:45:41):
It really quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:45:42):
Let's switch gears to another topic that has certainly made
waves in the NFL over the last couple of days.
The Indianapolis Colts. They've got themselves a starting quarterback. But
I think what's more notable is who is not only
not the starting quarterback, but seemingly isn't even really in
the conversation. Okay, so we know that earlier this week
(01:46:03):
Daniel Jones was named the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.
But what was very interesting about it is that in
the process, Shane Steichen basically acknowledged like, this is not
a you know, one series for one guy, one series
for another. He's like Daniel Jones is our guy and
he is going to be the guy. And I don't
(01:46:25):
have the exact verbiage in front of me, but the
insinuation was not like, you know, he's just gonna give
us the best chance to win in Week one.
Speaker 2 (01:46:33):
But it's still an open competition. It's a close competition.
Speaker 1 (01:46:36):
Anthony Richardson not happy, by the way, Worth noting the
Indianapolis Colts did play their final preseason game on Saturday,
Anthony Richardson did not appear. Maybe the maybe the intention
was never to play either of them today. I don't know,
so I don't want to.
Speaker 2 (01:46:49):
Speculate on that.
Speaker 1 (01:46:51):
But Anthony Richardson, you know, from top five pick, literally
three drafts ago, to to the bench. Maybe he done
in Indianapolis. What did you think of this as it
broke over the last couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:47:05):
I mean, it goes back to what we said about
Anthony Richardson at Florida. Anthony Richardson never had the time
to learn football. Everything that we saw from him was
so raw and yes, so impressive because he just has
incredible physical skills. He does like he's got all of
(01:47:28):
that kind of stuff, but he was not able to
actually fully grasp what he needed to. Like I've heard
this said before, but one of the great things about
a guy like and Alex Smith, for example, is that
an Alex Smith even told I think Alex Smith one
of the reasons that Mahomes was able to really flourish
(01:47:50):
is that when Mahomes came in there, Alex Smith was
able to teach him the intangible stuff that Mahomes with
his physical stuff, with his way he could throw the
football and all that kind of thing. He learned how
to lead, He learned some of those kind of factors
because Alex Smith had to learn all the detail because
he didn't have all the other stuff. The only way
he could stay in the league, the only way he
could become a starting quarterback, was to get all the
(01:48:13):
details right. It's like same thing with like an undersized
cornerback or something that dude's got to know. He's got
to know the opponent like the back of his hand.
He's got to understand tendencies in a different way. He's
got to see things that other guys don't see because
he doesn't have the physical measurables to go with that.
Whereas in Anthony Richardson, Anthony Richardson's case, it's kind of
(01:48:35):
the opposite. He's able to get by on his skill set,
but if he had just been able to stay at
Florida a little bit longer, he might have been able
to get the other side of that. And then he
went to an organization that immediately needed to play him
because they didn't have a quarterback. So he wasn't able
to sit behind anybody and learn that. And that's mean
(01:48:56):
not knocking his ability to learn, it's me knocking the
fact that he never had the opportunity. He was never
placed in a situation where he could learn. And because
of that, like when you watch him play, and I
watched like a video with Chase Daniel. I saw it
on YouTube, but I guess it came from I don't
know if he came from ESPNA Athletic or or wherever
(01:49:16):
Chase Daniel was doing it. Chase Daniel was going over
the play where Anthony Richardson got hurt, and he's like
nobody understands what he is doing, Like nobody on the
field knows what he is looking at. I don't know
what Anthony Richardson is doing on the football field. It's
like he doesn't know Anthony Richardson doesn't know. So unfortunately,
(01:49:37):
all this to say, I think Anthony Richardson is probably
done in Indianapolis, and what he could have been he's
never going to be because he just did not get
that fundamental teaching part that could have made him one
of the all time greats. And I just don't think
that he has now the NFL, you just don't have
(01:50:00):
the time, Like there's just not the ability there for
that to happen. Even if he's working hard in the offseason,
and he may be, there's just something that he's not
going to be able to get. And I think it
was because everybody shot him to the moon because of
his physical gifts and they never actually stopped and helped
him along the way. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:50:19):
I don't really have a ton to add. I agree.
Speaker 1 (01:50:22):
Is that the one thing I will say, you know,
we always talk about and I think to some degree
it's true, but I think to some degree it's not
this notion. Oh you know, it's it's impossible to evaluate
quarterbacks and you just never know. And it's like, Okay,
I get it, but like, let's let's talk through some
of these guys. Anthony Richardson one year starter team wasn't good,
(01:50:44):
basically played one one great game when there was no
film on him. Trey Lance basically didn't play his entire
senior year or his tire last year, was already down
at the FCS level, plays one game that season, then
goes because of COVID, Zach Wilson, Uh, you know, COVID
year a little bit nobody play, nobody a little bit small.
(01:51:06):
It's just like, by the way, Josh Allen, you know,
fifty eight percent completion percentage or whatever. There's an exception
to every rule, but I do feel like in general,
like by the way, well Levis, I know he wasn't
a first round pick. Yeah, okay, what what are you
seeing that nobody else is because none of us that
actually watch him play see it.
Speaker 2 (01:51:26):
And so Tyler Tyler Tyler, Sorry, no, it's okay. Bree
doesn't produce this show anymore.
Speaker 1 (01:51:32):
So hopefully not listening, Bri if you're listening, We're very
sorry about your quarterback situation. But it's just like you know,
and then you go to the guys that are successful,
and we'll see on some of them. But Jaden Daniels
I could I think he was a five year starter
in college. Multiple years at Arizona State, multiple years at LSU,
won a heis been in the toughest conference in college football.
(01:51:52):
Caleb Williams will see but three year starter, whether it works,
whether it doesn't, whatever, cam Ward, cam Ward, four or
five starter. Everywhere he goes, they win, wins the Heisman.
You know, you just go on and on down the list,
and so I don't know, I just I just I'm
not surprised. I understand why they made the pick. You know,
(01:52:14):
that was a what we believe to be a two
quarterback draft. The two guys at the top were Stroud
and Bryce Young, and they needed a quarterback. And I
understand that at some point they had to take a risk.
They wanted to get off of the carousel of bringing
in the veteran guy that was past his prime, Philip Rivers,
Carson Wentz, you know, Matt Ryan, whoever, and they needed
(01:52:34):
to take a chance. But to me, I just like,
I'm not surprised it didn't work, because it felt like
it was kind of set up for failure to be with.
And by the way, it's not like they're the most
functional organization to begin with. And then to your point,
J Mart, it's not like there was a system in
place to even help him succeed, which is a part
of the situation as well.
Speaker 3 (01:52:53):
Yeah, look, I think Philip Rivers, if he came out
of retire, if he decided to play, would be better
than both options at the colts have.
Speaker 1 (01:52:59):
Right, Well, there you go, and that is your Indianapolis
Cults segment, brought to you by and nobody would want
to sponsor that segment anyway.
Speaker 3 (01:53:08):
Uh fux by the Under. Brought to you by the Under.
Speaker 2 (01:53:10):
Yeah, brought to you by the Under.
Speaker 1 (01:53:12):
Your favorite sportsbook rush there now, brand I don't know
if you remember off the top of your herd was
it seven and a half?
Speaker 2 (01:53:17):
It was like preposterously high in my way too, it
was seven and a half.
Speaker 1 (01:53:21):
Yeah, seven and a half for the Indianapolis Cults. I
will take the under all freaking day. Fox Sports Radio

All right, Has Jim Harpa been arrested yet? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:54:39):
I want to know where this is going for what?
Speaker 3 (01:54:41):
Well, I'm just curious. I mean, based on everything that
I hear, apparently he's done everything in the world and
should be fired from his NFL job and suspended, and
he stole the national championship and everything. What in the world? Man, Like,
what universe are we living in? This is college football?
Everybody steals national championships? No I'm not even si. I
(01:55:04):
didnt even want to go down that road. I'm just like, dude,
you made the point, right, And I think Jonas has
made the same point in the same week. It's like, dude,
after the Stallions thing, they went and won games that
were so impressive, Like, what are we talking about here?
I still can't believe this is this has this has
gone this direction after it felt like it was over.
Speaker 1 (01:55:24):
Yeah, the other thing I would add too, and I
thought about I forget if I mentioned this on the
show last week, but you know, one of the things
like in a year like last year where the SEC
does not win the national championship in football and last year,
for the second straight year, they didn't even have a
team play for the national championship, what is one of
the stats that you know they hold on to for
dear life that proves that they're still the best conference
(01:55:45):
in college football? Well, we have the most NFL draft picks. Okay, Well,
after Michigan won the National Championship, they had thirteen players
drafted in the following NFL Draft. I believe that's tied
for second most all time. Then this off the same
national championship team, they had three more first rounders Kenneth Grant,
(01:56:05):
Colston Lovelin, and Mason Graham. Will Johnson would have been
a first rounder if he wasn't hurt all year. So
you're basically talking about thirteen guys off that previous team
that got drafted right after they won the championship, four
guys that basically would have been first round picks this
year that were part of that team. Like, why can't
(01:56:25):
we just acknowledge they were by far the best team,
had by far the most talent, and whatever factor Connor
Stallions played, it was a pretty mitigating factor, especially again
when you factor in that their four biggest wins of
the year all came after he was fired, two of them,
by the way, without Jim Harbaugh even on the sideline.
It's ridiculous to me, but it's just it is what
(01:56:47):
it is. So yes, I'll tell you what. So you're
not going to be in next week. I still haven't
gotten worried. I assume Arnie Spanier will be filling your seats.
So I'm sure we're not going to get good college
football talk in next week. So let's go ahead really
quickly and talk these Week one games Texas Oklahoma or Texas, Oklahoma, Texas,
Ohio State. Uh, tell me what you're thinking for that one.
(01:57:10):
I don't know if you have a pick yet, if
you've thought about it. By the way, if you missed it,
it's on the podcast Our National Championship Picks.
Speaker 2 (01:57:17):
Jmar did pick Texas to win the national championship.
Speaker 1 (01:57:19):
So I'm guessing if you like Texas to win the
national Championship, you probably feel good about them this week.
Speaker 3 (01:57:24):
What do you think? Man? That's a tough one, man,
because that you're going to the shoe in that scenario.
And this is Arch right like this this is week
one of Arch. In this spot where it's his team,
you want to make a statement. You have no bigger
opportunity than right here, Like the whole world is going
(01:57:46):
to be paying attention watching every single move that you make.
You'll get Fox on campus. Everything's going to be happening there. Gosh,
and Jeremiah Smith's still the best player in college football.
So where am I supposed to go here? I guess how?
I don't know. I'm torn, bro, This one's tough. This
(01:58:06):
is a very very difficult. You see the ticket price, no,
what is it? Low? Price is three seventy two. Wow,
that's a hot ticket right there. I think Ohio State
will beat them. Okay, that's just my head, that's what
That's just my first impression right now. I still take
Texas Winston National Championship, but I like Ohio State in
(01:58:31):
this particular game.
Speaker 2 (01:58:32):
Tell you what.
Speaker 1 (01:58:33):
I haven't formalized this take yet, but I I'm gonna
take Texas on the road, and I don't feel great
about it.
Speaker 2 (01:58:40):
Ohio State lost everybody.
Speaker 1 (01:58:42):
And by the way, if you missed it, I had
Ohio State winning the Big Ten, So I'm not like
down on them. I brought this up last week j Martin.
The thing that I think everyone's so focused on the quarterback.
Two new coordinators and like whatever we think about Chip
Kelly the college coach, or like the guy knows how
to play. And I don't know what went on in
that Michigan game, but other than that game, he was
(01:59:04):
basically lights out all year.
Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
And then Jim Knowles has gone too.
Speaker 1 (01:59:07):
On the defensive side, Matt Patricia is the defensive coordinator
for people do not know. I have no idea what
I'm getting out of him. And then Brian Hartline is
the OC and people forget this. He was the OC
two years ago because remember after the I guess it
would have been the third loss to Ohio State the
big Top. No, I think it was the second one.
(01:59:27):
The big topic of conversation was Ryan Deay shouldn't be
calling plays. He needs to be a CEO head coach.
They put this heartline guy in and he was so
bad that to go hied Chip Kelly. So I'm a
little worried about the coordinators. I'll take Texas to win.
I think I don't feel great about it. I'm willing
to change. We don't have a ton of time. I
think I know where you're going with this one. But
(01:59:49):
LSU at Clemson that is the seven thirty Eastern time game.
Myself and whoever is on with me, probably Arnie Spanier
will be on as this game goes final next week.
Speaker 3 (01:59:59):
I do believe in k club Nick. I don't really
believe in Garrett nus Meyer, at least to the hype
that I have heard. I think Dabo and his squad
will beat LSU and it will be another one of
those where LSU, you don't have to do this. This
is the ten Cup. Somebody telling me he doesn't have
to hit it from there like you don't have to
have this scheduled every year, but this is gonna be
(02:00:19):
oho to one again for Brian Kelly.
Speaker 1 (02:00:22):
Yeah, I don't understand. I mean, I like it as
a college football fan. I'm happy about it, but uh
opener against Clemson Natties. I'll tell you what though, we
got to get out of here. I want to thank
the crew, Brandon mary Mack on the board, Steve Disager.
From my partner Jason Martin. I'm ere tourus j mart
and I know you it's a work commitment, but enjoy
your time off.
Speaker 2 (02:00:41):
Next week. We'll miss you.
Speaker 1 (02:00:42):
