Speaker 2 (00:23):
The craziness and the amazingness. And I mean, let me
just like paint the scene here a little like this is.
It's the perfect and the craziest place to have a
Super Bowl in Vegas. The first time the Super Bowl
has ever been in Vegas, and it was a wild time.
(00:44):
And I mean it's going to get even crazier today.
It will reach peak madness tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Although I don't know last night, yesterday.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Love yesterday, it was. It's a time. Man.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
If you live close and want to drive out to
Vegas and experience the madness of Super Bowl, go do it.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
It's everywhere.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
It's in the streets, it's in the casinos, it's leading
up to the game. It is going to be beautiful madness.
And we're going to take you all through it today.
We're we're gonna break it all down. We are broadcasting

(01:29):
as I said, we've got an epic show lined up
for you today.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
We're going to talk all things super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
We have the Kansas City Chief Senior team reporter Matt
McMullen joining us at the bottom of the hour to
break down all things Chiefs. Then we have Dave Hellman,
the host of NFL and Fox Podcast, joining us an
hour two to break down both the teams. And we
have producer Patrick Sweeko. I say it right, you did
(01:54):
say you guys, I big on making sure right, Yeah,
just crush names.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Okay, we want to make sure that goes well.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
We have Patrick o that today or technical producer Chris
Purfett and Martin Wise at the news desk.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
But guys, let's get started with the big game tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Because we have officially made it to the Super Bowl,
and it has been one hundred and fifty five days
since Week one of kickoff, two hundred and eighty four
games played this season so far, eight hundred and fifty
two hours of football, and it all leads to tomorrow.
This is what dreams are made of. This is where
(02:33):
dynasty is busted out from the Liz McGuire movie five
hundred twenty five thousand and six hundred minutes. I know,
I kind of I don't even know if that was
like the right number, but like that's what I was
thinking about when I was putting all of this together.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
I feel really good about it.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
But it's just crazy, like when you when you really
like think about what tomorrow means to every single person
involved in the game, from the coaches to the players,
the front office.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
The business side of these organizations, the.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Training staff, literally every single person involved in this process.
Tomorrow is what you dream about. It's what dreams are
made of. It's where you create dynasties that the Chiefs
when tomorrow they are officially a dynasty with three It
came from Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
He said three three rings is what you need to
be considered a dynasty.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
And I'm I'm with you, Patrick, But okay, we have
a rematch, a Super Bowl rematch. The Chiefs the reigning
Super Bowl champs, the forty nine Ers, a team that's
been favored in every single game this season, and the
last time that these teams face each other in the
Super Bowl was twenty twenty. Chiefs Yes, Chiefs one the
twenty nineteen season in Miami, yep. Kind of the last
(03:45):
big event before the world shutdown.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
It was, honestly, and I might have gotten COVID that week,
because I think.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I'm pretty sure everyone did. There was a Fox Sports
Super Bowl, so everyone came home with that. With that,
Chiefs won the game, thirty one to twenty. They still
had Tyreek Hill, Yes, they did. The forty nine ers also,
though look very different. They had Jimmy g as their quarterback.
They did not have the offensive player of the year
Christian McCaffrey or Brandon Ayuk or Brock Purty.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
They had a rookie Deebo Samuel Yeah, and a rookie
Dre green Law and a rookie Nick Bosa.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
These are all rookies. They were all bright eyed, bushy
tailed fresh faces. They've seen some things.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Now, Oh they are ready, they are right. So how
did we get back here to the Super Bowl rematch? Okay,
let's start with the reigning champs right, the Kansas City Chiefs,
because towards the end of the regular season, I don't
think many people besides Chiefs fans and like maybe the
Chiefs staff and the team had them penciled in to
go to the Super Bowl. They were seven to two
heading into their bye week and then went four and
(04:45):
four the rest of the season, pretty average. Plus all
the other powerhouse teams in the AFC having as strong
of a season as they were having, it felt like
this was going to be someone else's year, right. Lamar
Jackson having his MVP season, willed his team to the
postseason full transparency built. I picked the Bills and the
(05:06):
Ravens to beat Kansas City. Jokes on me, like literally,
jokes on me.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Never bet against the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
No, but if there was ever a season, oh oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
The AFC looked going into the season, all we talked
about was how the field in the AFC looked so
much tougher than the one in the NFC, and how
this was going. They were all going to kind of
cannibalize each other and they were going And that happened,
honestly in the AFC West, where Chiefs had really bad
losses to both the Broncos and the Raiders. Yeah, at
different times during the season, and you were like, they
(05:36):
did not look the Chiefs did not look unstoppable this year.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
No, this was their down year. This was a down
year for them. Not only for the Chiefs but Patrick Mahomes.
Oh yeah, they led the league in drops in crucial moments,
game changing moments that they lost.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
There.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I think that MVS drop against the Eagles is still
like living rent free and most.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Hauntings haunting my brain.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I also picked I was really high on the Eagles
all season, so that was I.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Think a lot of all of us were. Because the
NFC was again supposed to be very weak.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Yeah gosh.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
And then Mahomes had his lowest passer ratings since he
took over the full time starting job in Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
But once we got to the playoffs, he has the
chief startin inevitable.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
They are inevitable. It just a stone. They are thanos.
They are the NFL's fan.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
I love that so much.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
There are as a marvel fan huge, Oh yeah, I
love I've watched every single Marvel's movie. I know that
they are in they are like it's just it's what
it is. I mean, they went on the road for
the first time in mahomes post season career, one in Buffalo,
one in Baltimore against two of the top quarterback absolutely
absolutely insane. The playoffs are like a completely different season,
(06:45):
and this is what everyone has to remember. Okay, it's
a fresh start and this is where the Chiefs come
alive and they thrive. What impressed you most about what
the Chiefs did just kind of in this postseason run
to get here back to the super.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Bowl, Well, well, he talked about how they had the
highest drop rate by their wide receivers. They had a
six point nine percent drop rate, so that means they
dropped forty four of Patrick Mahomes passes. So his down
passer rating, his all of that you have to take
with a grain of salt because it all stemmed from
the fact that it was his receiving core. He was
hitting them right in the hands like it was Hans
(07:20):
accurate than he has been all his entire career, his
entire what is it six year career now yeh. What
impressed me the most though, was the fact that they
maneuvered their way through it. And this is what Andy
Reid is known for. This is what Patrick Mahomes is
known for. You look at his safety blanket as Travis Kelceyes,
Travis Kelsey had five receiving touchdowns this season.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
I mean he wasn't one hundred percent. No, he was
not one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
But then yeah, you get to the postseason. Oh, this
is where they come. Guy, they switch into a different gear.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
They really do.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Andy Reid starts trotting out stuff that he hasn't shown
all season, and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelcey have three
touchdown connections now in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
When he had what.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Season, He's had three and two games in Yeah, two
games because they had to or no, they didn't have
to buy two three.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
And three games Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yes, And so he's had three this postseason, and they
finally look like the Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey that
we're used to seeing. On top of the fact, you
now have for she Rice, who is their wide receiver one.
He is a rookie this year, so obviously that was
going to take a little while, especially when he has
to rise to the occasion and he has to gain experience,
he has to figure out his leverage, he has to
(08:32):
figure out how these NFL defensive backs are going to
play him, and he has to learn the nuances of
Patrick Mahomes. That is what makes Travis and Patrick so
dangerous together is that you cannot take your eyes off
Travis Kelsey if you are defending him, because Patrick Mahomes
is acutely aware of where he is on the field
at all times. Travis doesn't run routes. No, he doesn't
(08:53):
run routes that you're found that are found on the
route tree.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
No, he's literally making it up.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
As he talked about it after that crazy like falling
down catch. Yes, he said, I was like, I wasn't
in the right spot.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
I look at Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I'm like, I have to catch his form. I have
somehow have to figure out a way just to catch this.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
And he somehow found a way to hang in the
air for like three seconds. Wala, defender is already on
him and just snatch that ball.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Beautiful. It was poleetic.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
This is what they do and it's what makes them
so hard to defend.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
And Luke Keigley actually on up In Adams our friend
Kay Adams on her show. He talked about as he
you know, longtime linebacker in the NFL. Wonderful great, one
of the smartest linebackers that ever plays. He's like it
is as simple and as hard as just making sure
you never take your eyes off Travis Kelsey. You cannot.
You have to have I discipline. You have to stick
(09:42):
with him like glue. Ten seconds after the play has started,
ten seconds out of the play has broken down, It
does not matter. I Patrick Mahomes can find him. You
need to stay on him. And that's what is carrying
the Chiefs right now. That's what it's going to carry
them into the super Bowl. That is why I did
not pick it against the Kansas City Chiefs at all
this postseason.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
You've picked them every single time, So you're the smart one.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
I came on, I came on here show head of
the Ravens of the Changship Game, and I said, as
much as I want to pick the Ravens because I
love Lamar Jackson and I love everything he's been able
to do this season, and I would love it for
the Baltimore Ravens in general, I just can't.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
This was his year though, this was it was there
was ever going to be.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
A Pat Travis Kelson.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
You can't.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
You can't the most experienced trio right now in the league. Like,
it's absolutely stand. So the Chiefs are coming into the
Super Bowl as underdogs once again. Now we saw this
happen last year when Mahomes was doubted, and almost every
game this postseason obviously underdogs against the Bills and the Ravens,
and Mahomes recently talked about what it was like kind
(10:52):
of that underdog mentality.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Yeah, I mean, I think you approach like any other game.
I never feel like the underdog. I always feel like
we have a chance to win the football game. And
that's how we have approach every single game. And we
were underdogs in the last Super Bowl. So all you
can do is just have that same mindset of just
going out there playing your best football and hoping that
you end up with a win.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
I need you to understand them. Of about Kansas City
Chiefs tookay, let's go. I assume you've heard of the
bulletin war material.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
I guess yes, they're not allowed to give it, right,
what they can't give out bulletin boar material?
Speaker 6 (11:19):
Right?
Speaker 3 (11:19):
No, So that's the big thing about why they don't
want players talking to the media or trash talking into
the media because they don't want to give the either
team motivation. Right, This is like a time honor tradition
in the NFL. It used to be on actual bulletin
boards that people would take out press clippings and stick
it to a bulletin board of all of these doubters. Right, Yeah,
that doesn't exist anymore because we're all in a digital
age and all that kind of stuff. But if you
don't think that Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, yes, are
(11:44):
so incredibly aware of what people are saying and take
everything personally. The Chiefs are masters at manufacturing motivation, Yes
they are, and that is what they carry with them
through this entire thing. You watch that AFC Championship game
against the Ravens, Yeah, you watched that off the Chiefs
offensive line, the way that they were pestering rokwand Smith,
(12:06):
Patrick Queen and with Tray Smith in particular, what are
their guards who I love to death. Got to know
him through Olie Masterminds.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
He is after the.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Whistle just kind of just a little shoves, Yeah you're
in there. What happens at the end of the game,
rokwand Smith gets the game ceiling penalty for the Kansas
City Chiefs by just charging Tray Smith. If you don't
think that that was planted by oh yeahing his offensive
line to make sure to get to them, get under
their skin a snap. So they do it both ways.
(12:36):
They take motivation, mentals warfare. It's mental warfare. It's amazing, gosh.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Okay, now let's talk some forty nine Ers here real quick,
because this team has been favored every single game this season,
and the last time that happened was the Chiefs in
twenty twenty twenty one. Carmen, you were very familiar with
the that because they lost to the Bucks in the
Super Bowl when you were the Bucks reporter. However, three
(13:02):
years ago was the best day of my life. Yeah today,
boat parade? Okay, oh my gosh, yes, go.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Check my Instagram stories if you want to see this Jndary.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
However, forty nine Ers are not coming off a Super
Bowl win like the Chiefs were going in favorite every
single game. They're actually looking for redemption after losing to
the Chiefs in the twenty twenty Super Bowl. The twenty
nineteen to twenty twenty season, there's no denying that the
forty nine Ers have the most complete team in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
They have a stacked offense.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
McCaffrey Offensive Player of the Year Kittl debo Ayuk brought
perty in his second year and first full season, has
gotten them to the Super Bowl. We're going to dive
into him a little later. Forty nine Ers defense was
top five in total defense. Kyle Shanahan is one of
the great play callers of our time. But this postseason,
because remember it is it's a new season, right, new
(13:51):
season in the postseason, they've had to fight back for
every single win this postseason. They were down in the
fourth quarter to the Packers, they were down twenty four
to seven eight halftime to the Lions.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Scored seventeen points in the first eight minutes at the
second half to tie it up.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Yeah, you were there.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
I was there.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
That was I mean, but I like to look at
things like glass half full. Right, Okay, yes, they were down,
But what this tells me is that they have no
quit They don't panic when they're down, and they know
how to come back and they know how to win.
And you need a complete team effort to be able
to do that. So, as I said, you were at
that Lions forty nine Ers, NFC championship game. How does
(14:28):
that experience of being able to fight back and kind
of prepare them for the ultimate challenge of.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
That of just giving everything they have for the Super
Bowl champs tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
I do think it's almost a solar lining, say for
the score forty nine Ers, because you did see in
the regular season forty nine Ers were the dominant team
in the NFC by far. They won by an average
margin of victory of eleven points per game. And then
you go into the postseason and you get down to
the Packers, yeah, which no one gave a shot to.
This is one of my teams too, And I will
say I didn't see them going this far in the postseason.
(14:59):
I didn't really they see him getting to the Postseeds.
I thought, listen, I've said, Jordan Love is going to
be good for a very long time. They have plethora
of offensive weapons, they're just young, yep. But I knew
they were going to be a tough out after that
Cowboys game, which I was also at the fact though
that the forty nine Ers were able to compose themselves
and get it together, and then especially at halftime of
that NFC Championship game where they were down so bad.
(15:22):
I mean, you had people in Detroit booking flights to Vegas. Yes,
in that first half because Detroit looked so completely dominant.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
They did.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Kyle Shanahan goes into halftime, makes so many different adjustments.
They come out like a different team. That defense has
a sense of urgency again and they completely change the
game around. And when you can do that, when you
can win both ways, as if you can win as
a dominant team, as a team that's expected to win, yeah,
but you can also win when the going gets tough.
(15:52):
They're going to need that against the Kansas City Chiefs
and all of the experience they have in this game,
in particular, for the last five Super Bowls have had
Kansas City C's in it.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Ah, It's insane. It's absolutely insane. They are inevitable and
the best of the best when it comes to the posties.
We have so much more to get to you guys.
We didn't even get to get to the coaches in
this segment, so we're gonna save that for the next segment.
We're gonna take a quick break here. When we come back,
we're gonna dive into the Super Bowl quarterback matchup. The

Welcome back to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Currey here
with Carmen Vitali. We are broadcasting live from the Tyrock
dot Com studios in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Happy Super Bowl weekend.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
We are just over twenty four hours away from the
big game in Vegas. We talked about it in the
first segment. Carmen and I spent the whole week out
in Vegas. We both got back yesterday.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Let me apologize because you can probably hear it in
my voice.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
No worth it, worth it. I don't know how everybody's
doing the Monday to Monday for like NFL network. Who's
out there, who are working every single thing up to it?
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Like I have a forty eight hour rule in Vegas
usually unless say it for work, saying my work has
made me stay. Maybe bring that rule. So many times
over the last like three years.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
I mean, there's nothing you can do. Like after Night one,
I was like, oh no, I have to talk for
two hours on Saturday. Be careful, Curry, You got this
all right. We just broke down how how we kind
of ended up with this Super Bowl matchup in the
first segment between the Chiefs and the forty nine ers.
So now let's dive into the quarterback matchup, because you guys,
we have completely opposite stories of how they got here, right,
(18:15):
we have the greatest quarterback of our time versus mister
irrelevant if we can even call him that anymore.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
From let's start, these two had very different paths.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Patrick Mahomes the Chiefs traded up to the tenth overall
pick to get him in the first round. He sat
behind Smith for a season, but it was always set.
He was always set to be their starter. Right, and
we all know what happens next. Two super Bowl rings,
two Super Bowl MVPs, two regular season MVPs, and he
is the best quarterback in the league. Now the other guy,
(18:44):
Rock Purty. The forty nine Ers took Purty with the
very last pick in the twenty twenty two draft. That
last pick was two hundred and sixty second overall. He
was a third string quarterback, was not supposed to play,
but then Trey Lance got hurt, then Jimmy g got hurt,
and Brock took full advantage of that opportunity and has
brought this forty nine Ers team to back to back
(19:05):
NFC Championship games and now in his first full season,
to a Super Bowl. Okay, and Brock is well aware
of the situation that he's in. He said quote, the
keys weren't given to me or anything. It had to
be earned coming in day one, just trying to learn
Kyle's system as playbook and earn the respect of my teammates.
Over time, I've been able to step into that role
(19:27):
and be ready for my opportunity. At that same time,
I have a lot of help around me, and it's
allowed me to develop and I'm going to continue to
develop with the help and the cast that I have
around me. You guys, I am tired of everyone bagging
on brock Perty. I'm not saying he is the best quarterback.
We know he's playing the best quarterback tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
But he deserves.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
He deserves the respect for what he has done in
not even two full seasons to get to this point.
Like you can have the best coach in the world,
you still have to execute the plays he gives you.
You can have the best weapons, you still have to
complete the pass. And on top of that, he's the
third youngest starting quarterback in a Super Bowl, behind number
(20:11):
one Dan Marino and number two Big Ben Pretty decent company.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
It's where do you stick with brock Party?
Speaker 3 (20:19):
We need so I've got thoughts, okay, because we can't
keep talking about the fact that so brock Party is
because he's mister Irrelevant, is making next to nothing. Right,
He's making less than some undrafted guys.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
Are you ready for this?
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Brock Party got paid around forty nine thousand dollars per
game Patrick Mahomes got paid fifty three thousand for every
pass attempted this season.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
That's insane.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
We talk about that though, as an advantage for the
forty nine ers because then you are able to allocate
that money elsewhere. You're able to allocate those assets elsewhere.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
But then at the same time, we are dogging brock Party, yeah,
for having all of the help that he has. It's
either a cheat code or it's not, but you can't
have it both ways. I am not faulting brock Party
for being able to take advantage of the team he
has around him and the fact that he is able
(21:13):
to still facilitate this offense. And if you watch that
NFC Championship game against the Lions, which I was there for,
towards the end of the game, there were a couple scrambles.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Game winning drive that brock Party.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Extended drives and more importantly kept the ball out of
the Lion's hands. And those are the crucial plays that
you need to make. Yes, he is a game manager.
We need to stop talking about that like it's a
bad thing.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
It's not a bad thing.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
It's not. I honestly, I probably have a higher threshold
for most when it comes to game changers, I think
there are maybe at most five game changers in the league, maybe.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Quarterbacks or quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Okay, I think there are five quarterbacks that you can
actually label game changers. Lamar yes, Patch Mahomes yes, Josh
Allen Yes. The rest of these guys still make an
NFL paycheck. They still, I mean, except for about brock Perty.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
I guess is under a mill right.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Yeah, but they are exactly what their team needs. And
that's the point that I want to make about brock
Perty is he is exactly what that team needs. We
saw in the regular season with Patrick Mahomes not having
the receiver corps that he's used to around him. Yeah,
he can be as accurate as he is all the time,
but if those receivers can't catch, yeah, and then it
goes the same way with brock Purty. If you can't
(22:29):
throw the ball, then that offense is rendered completely useless.
So I acknowledge the fact that he has tons of
weapons around him. Yeah, I acknowledge the fact that Kyle
Shanahan is not just a good play caller, he's a
good game caller. There is a difference, yes, But brock
Purty is what is the engine that is making this
all go. And he has been a picture of consistency
(22:51):
since he took over the starting job, and he has
gotten better as this season has worn on to the
point where, yes, in the biggest moment, when it counts
in the NFC Championship game, this man is scrambling, yes
for a first down to make sure the Lions don't
get that ball back.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
It's crazy, you guys.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
And if he wins, he would be the first quote
mister irrelevant starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. But
as we know, it's going to take everything he's got
because he is facing the best of the best. Patrick Mahomes,
legit puts on a masterclass of how to win in
the postseason. It doesn't matter where he is. The moment
is never too big for Mahomes. It is just absolutely insane.
But right now, let's check in with Martin Wise to
(23:28):
see what's trending.
Speaker 8 (23:32):
Patrick Mahomes maybe without his running back Jack McKinnon, who's active,
but is a game time decision to see if he
will play. In Chiefs guard Joe Toney definitely won't play.
He's got a pectoral injury that's had him out for
the last few weeks, Nick Ala Gretti.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
Will start in this place. He was just talking about
brock Brady and his weapons.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
Well, forty nine Ers have no starters listed on their
injury reports, so the is fully loaded. Elsewhere in the NFL,
the Bears have the number one overall pick, NFL media
reporting it will cost and his historic out of compensation
to move off of that pick. But elsewhere in the
top five, New England Patriots may be looking to shop
the number three pick and address the quarterback position in
(24:09):
free agency. Former Washington offensive coordator Ryan Glove Grubb was
slated to be the next offensive coordinator at Alabama. Instead,
Grub will go right back to Seattle, this time as
Seahawks offensive coordinator under new head coach at Mike McDonald.
Los Angeles Chargers hired former forty nine Ers linebacker Navarro
Bowman to coach the linebackers, reuniting him with his former
(24:29):
head coach, Jim Harbaugh. The Oklahoma City thunder acquired Bismack
Biyondbo for the rest of the season. They're actually in
action right now, ten to fifteen left in the third quarter,
trailing the Mavericks seventy five to sixty four.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
Of that game in Dallas, and at halftime, the Pistons
have a what is that.
Speaker 8 (24:47):
A fifty eight to forty nine lead over the Clippers,
who are at top of the Western Conference Jade and
Ivy with fourteen, Kawhi Leonard with eleven, and elsewhere in
the NBA seventy six as president Darryl Mory says he's
hopeful that Jowellen We'll be able to return for this
postseason run, and former net spencer Dinwoodie is expected to
sign with the Lakers after he clears waivers in just
(25:08):
about a half an hour.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Ladies, back to you, Thank you, Martin.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
You're listening to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here
with Carmen Vitally. We are broadcasting live from the Tyrek
dot Com studios in Los Angeles, and guys, let's bring
in our first guest live from Las Vegas. He is
the chief senior team reporter, Matt McMullen. Thank you so
much for joining the show.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
What is up, guys? How's it going? I feel like
these two weeks have lasted forever it has. The game
is finally tomorrow, right.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
I all pro with this though, Matt, Come on, you
know what to expect, right, not only for you, I'll tell.
Speaker 7 (25:43):
You what that like.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
Yeah, this is the chief fourth Super Bowl in five years.
It does not get old, though, And I tell people
I can't believe it because I'm a Chiefs fan at heart,
a group in Kansas City, and each one of these
seasons is so special. And to do this almost every
year like we have, I certainly don't take it for granted,
and no one else in an organization does either. I'll
play that.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
I love that for you.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Now, as you just mentioned, this is very familiar territory
for you, for Patrick Mahomes, for the Chiefs, you just said,
gearing up for his fourth Super Bowl in five years.
How does that experience help them not only prepare for
tomorrow physically but mentally.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
Sure, I think that's a great question. I think you've
kind of seen that manifest itself over the last several weeks.
Think about the past the Chiefs had to take to
reach this point, To beat the Dolphins at home during
the fourth coldest game in NFL history, and to go
on the road and beat the Bill, go on the road,
beat the top seeded Baltimore Ravens, that's a really difficult
thing to do. And I think you've seen the experience
(26:41):
and the veteran nature of this team really come out
over the last several weeks. Because that's difficult, and the
Chiefs in recent years, it's not that it's easy, but
it's been a different road where they've had all these
home games and you have the crowd on your side.
That certainly helps. It's a familiar setting. This year has
been different, but you've seen the leadership of this team
and the better nature of this team really come out.
(27:02):
And I'm expecting that experience to come out once again
here tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
We were talking about earlier how these two teams kind
of had different experiences in the regular season. Right, you
can talk about how the Chiefs didn't look unstoppable with
the forty nine ers were dominant in the regular season.
That kind of switches up in the postseason. So I
want you to let us a little bit behind the
curtain know what changes for the Chiefs from the regular
season to the postseason. What I mean, Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes,
(27:26):
these guys just lock in to a different level. How
does that happen?
Speaker 5 (27:32):
Well, I think we even saw a little earlier this year,
before the postseason. It was that Bengals game in Week seventeen,
and that wasn't a playoff game, just a regular season game,
but it actually kind of felt like a playoff game
if you were there, because a week prior, the Chiefs
lost to the Raiders on Christmas Day, did not look
like themselves at all, and that was an opportunity for
the Chiefs to win the division that day, and the
(27:52):
Raiders got the best of the Chiefs, and coach Reid
and Patrick and Travis, a lot of those guys, they've
all said that that game kind of served as a
wake up call. The following week again Cincinnati, it was
a playoff atmosphere. We saw kind of a different intensity
from the team, and they've carried that through over the
last month now. It's been the same kind of attitude
and mentality every single week, and I think again it
(28:13):
gets back to the experience point where these guys know
how to win these games when it truly matters, and
it doesn't mean they're always going to win them, but
they're always going to give it their best and make
sure they have the best opportunity to win it. And
that's the benefit of playing in all these big games
over the years that when the lights of the brightest,
they really seem to show up. And really, I think
that Christmas Day game against the Raiders once again surchs
(28:33):
a wake up call for this team that it wasn't
going to be easy. But all the goals are still
right there and here they are yet.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Again that's the chip, I mean ship on their shoulder.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
It really it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I mean, as you just said that, the Chiefs seemed
to thrive in the biggest moments when the lights of
the brightest and Mahomes always just puts on a masterclass
come the postseason. But what is the vibe like today,
the day before the Super Bowl? You're back here. Take
us into that law room. What are they talking about,
what's the mood, what are they doing? Just kind of
(29:05):
take us through what this day is like for them.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
Yeah, Well, the mood is they're locked in, that's for sure.
This team has been extremely locked in here for the
last of the weeks. The game plan is in the
way that Chiefs and coach ree do it is. Last
week was the week where they're kind of treating it
like there was a game. Last Sunday they had the
game plan in, went through all their practices, and this
week is all about putting the finishing touches on it.
(29:28):
And they had their practices this week at the Raiders' facility.
Today is the team photo and then tomorrow is the game.
I'm going to try to go out there and take
care of business. But again, the attitude and the vibe
have been a group that.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
Is on a mission.
Speaker 5 (29:42):
They've been on a mission the way since that Bengals game,
and the attitude has been relentless and it's really maintained
here over the last month. I haven't seen any drop
off at all. These guys are locked in for tomorrow
and I can't wait to see the shows that they
put on.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Matt, you and I got to know each other as colleagues.
I was the team reporter for the b years and
we we had we've I had the similar experience of
getting to go through a Super Bowl with these guys.
But I want you to kind of tell us more
about the vibe that we don't get to hear about,
which is that everybody else that works for the organization
this week is so focused on the team, and rightfully so,
(30:17):
don't get me wrong. In the coaching staff and the
front office staff and how the team got here. But
this means so much to the organization itself. So what's
the vibe like for everybody in the front office, the
ones that work in marketing, the ones that work in
your department in digital. How much does this mean to them?
Because it was an incredible experience for all, for the
(30:37):
hundreds of people that make these things go.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
Yeah, I mean, you know as well as anyone. I'm
actually at one of the hotels downtown where a lot
of the friends and family are saying, and I'm across
the way from the restaurant where my wife and her
friend and all of our friends are right now. And
you're right. It means so much to everyone in the organization,
but also our families, because you know, for me, I
travel to every game, I'm gone all the time. For
(31:01):
my wife to come here and for her friend to
come here, and for everyone else's families to be here
to experience this, it's just the ultimate kind of weekend
and the ultimate way to enjoy all of this together.
And it's that way for really everyone in an organization.
It's awesome to see the players, families and their kids
running around having fun kind of treating it like a vacation.
And that's why, like we say, football is family, right,
(31:22):
and it's kind of cliche, but I mean truly. I mean,
these guys and for me, with the people in our organization,
we see each other more than we see our own
family during the season. And to have a reward like this,
to come to Vegas and to enjoy the Super Bowl
and to hopefully win it, it doesn't get any better
than that. I mean, you guys know you work in
sports for these kinds of moments, and again, as a
Chiefs fan of heart, to be able to do this
(31:44):
with my childhood team does not get old.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
I mean it is kind of crazy though, that it's
in Vegas. I know you said, you see the teammates, families,
everyone's there. It's a great time. But we did hear
Patrick Mahomes tell us guys this is a business trap
and encourage them to stay in and not go out
in Vegas. He even offered to take them all back
to Vegas to celebrate if and when after they win.
(32:08):
So how has that been managed this week really leading
up to tomorrow, Because I mean, it's sin city that
you walk out your hotel room and it's a parsentation.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
Well, that's the nice thing about this trip is our
team hotel is nowhere near actual Las Vegas. We're way
out in Henderson. So I'm down here on the Strip
today just hanging out with my family, but for the
entire week, and the guys when they're just walking around
the hotel, they're nowhere near Las Vegas. And I think,
you know, that's intentional that the NFL to make sure
that guys can be away from all the distractions, because
(32:42):
this is like the most distracting place on Earth. I
do think from a presentation standpoint, Vegas is doing an
amazing jobs. Like you guys are here, like it feels
like the Super Bowl is here, and frankly, sometimes it
doesn't always feel.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
That way because it's so spread out.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
Yeah, there's all stuff going on, but Vegas is so
compact that it feels like a big game that's coming
up tomorrow, which is super cool. But at the same time,
I'm glad that they were able to find a way
for the players and the coaches to get away, to
not have distractions, and to be able to focus on
the game. And that's been the case all weeks for sure.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
All right, Tomorrow, Patrick Mahomes will be the youngest quarterback
to start in his fourth Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
He's already won two.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Patrick Mahomes said, it's three super Bowls to be considered
a dynasty. What would it mean to mahomes legacy to
win his third tomorrow?
Speaker 5 (33:28):
I mean, guys, he's twenty eight years old and now
it's ridiculous and he's starting his fourth Super Bowl. If
he can win tomorrow, it'll be his fifteenth career postseason win.
That trail's only Joe Montana with sixteen. He's right behind
him and Tom Brady with thirty five. It's all ways
to go to catch Brady.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
But still, I mean, he's the only one that can.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like to have all these
postseason wins already?
Speaker 9 (33:51):
Did?
Speaker 5 (33:51):
He playing in his fourth Super Bowl? I believe only
John Elway and Brady played in more Super Bowls at
this point than Patrick will have after tomorrow. I mean nuts.
And the fact that he's only twenty eight years old.
We're seeing history before our eyes, there really are. And
you know, it's kind of like when people would talk
about Lebron and they're watching him in the moment it's
(34:12):
hard to compare him to Michael Jordan because everyone idealizes
Michael Jordan. I get that. Yeah, we need to remember
here that we were watching one of the greatest players
of all time, Like we're watching him in his prime
and he's just getting started to be a starter for
six seasons and for his season never to end a
shy of the AFC Championship game at home in overtime.
(34:32):
I mean, it's just silly. This is the kind of
stuff that if you had like a Madden campaign, it
wouldn't be it wouldn't be realistic. So you need to
up the difficulty. It's nuts. So if you can win tomorrow,
I just add to the legends to Patrick Mahomes and
I'm certainly hoping he can do it.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
He's already there before really go real quick, what's your
prediction for the game tomorrow? Are you allowed to give
that as a team reporter?
Speaker 5 (34:52):
Well, yeah, you know, my prediction is going to be
I'll say this, Yeah, obviously I want the Chiefs to win.
I hope the Chiefs win. Yeah, I think the Chiefs
can win. It's going to be difficult. The Niners are
a great team and had a great season but just
based on what I've seen from this team all year long,
the resiliency have seen in this team all year long,
and being around these guys, I certainly feel great. A
(35:12):
boy the Chiefs chances he's got to go out there
and take care of business.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Love it, Matt. Thank you so much for joining us.
Have an amazing day today with your family. Have a
great Super Bowl tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
I don't trust too much.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Thanks so much, guys awesome. All right, when we come back,
the dues and the dots and sports you're listening.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
Welcome back to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here
with Carmen Vitally. We are broadcasting live from the Tarek
dot Com studios in Los Angeles. Thank you for spending
our Super Bowl Saturday afternoon with carme and me a
little over twenty four hours away from the big game.
But right now it is time for the dues and
(36:02):
the don'ts in sports.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Highlight dues, oh, I love that, and putting a spotlight.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
On the don't.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
The subject brings me no joy?
Speaker 5 (36:12):
Are you on crack?
Speaker 7 (36:13):
It's time for the dues and the don'ts in sports?
Speaker 1 (36:17):
All right?
Speaker 2 (36:17):
I'm gonna start with a do here, do honor your
sports legends. The Lakers unveiled their first of three Kobe
Bryant's statues that will be outside of Crypto dot com arena.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
I still want to call it staples. I still have
a hard time saying, oh you do.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
This one is of Kobe in his number eight jersey,
pointing to the sky after scoring a career high eighty
one points against the Raptors in two thousand and six.
And my favorite part of this unveiling was his wife,
Vanessa Bryant quote during the ceremony saying, if you don't
like this touch because Kobe picked this statue out and
the Nike already sent her a tough uh. She was
(36:54):
ready sweatshirt. I mean it was beautiful.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
She was ready for the haters. He's like, don't you
can't come for me? This is Kobe that I love
that so much?
Speaker 4 (37:01):
All right?
Speaker 3 (37:01):
I also have a do come from radio row? Do
have players interview each other? I don't know if you
saw this. I reposted it on my Twitter timeline.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
I don't say who.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
Michael Parson says a podcast of the Dallas Cowboys. Yes,
he did an episode from Radio Row and he had Attackers'
quarterback Jordan Love on and he asked him in that
playoff game, yeah, the wildcard round? What like, how were
you guys able to just manhandle us?
Speaker 10 (37:36):
I know?
Speaker 3 (37:37):
And Jordan Love said, listen, I don't want to talk
any you know, you know what.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
You guys are playing safety's as linebackers. Of course we
were going to be able to run on you. It
is tremendous, just phenomenal content if you want to. I
retrated it, like I said onto my timeline because I
just this is that's so fun to me. I love it.
I love it when players interview each other.
Speaker 1 (37:56):
Yeah, I love that.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Okay, I got another do do And this is kind
of a two parter. Do have fun in life and
don't take yourself too seriously Part one? At the Pro Bowl,
did you see Ray Lewis was dressed up as a
janitor with dreadlocks like a wig on and was talking
to all the Pro Bowlers as they were walking in,
and nobody had any idea that it was him a
(38:19):
couple of guys I kind of came back.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Was like, kind of looked like Ray Lewis. I think
that might have been ray Lewis.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Like just kept walking and Ray's over there, just like
head down, like swishing the hair back and forth, like
they have no idea. It's it's amazing, Okay, Part two
of have fun and don't take yourself too seriously.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Patrick Mahomes Dad Bob season do they beat the Ravens? Inside?
Speaker 2 (38:40):
The NFL posted a video of shirtless Patrick Mahomes in
the locker room giving a speech, and.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
He tweeted out, yo, why they gonna do me like that?
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Because he had a little gut hanging out. He addressed
it opening Night this week and said, I have a
six pack. It's just under the dad bod. If you
feel me, there might be some skin there. But then
like underneath eat that.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
The six back is there.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
You just gotta you gotta get real close and squint
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
But I think you'll see it.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
I mean, dad bods are clearly in. You look at
Kirk Cousins. Although Kirk Cousins doesn't have a dat, I
should say he's he's ripped his magic mic performance at Honors.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
Were there hilarious, amazing?
Speaker 3 (39:17):
Speaking of all of that, Yes, don't be afraid to
dance around your living room for Usher at super Coolah.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Millennials, We're ready to go, like Fulham the.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
Way that I am so ready. I just I cannot wait.
I've been an Usher fan for so long Late.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
Nighty you know, he was my first concert that I
ever went to at Staples Center that I like paid
like hundreds of.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
Dollars to go see. Absolutely weird.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
I mean I think Kanye West and like John Legend
opened for him. I was like, what what a crazy
lineup in high school?
Speaker 5 (39:50):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (39:50):
Oh, I know every single one.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
I like, I'm a big fan of like old Usher
my way.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
Oh yeah yeah, bad girl, yeah, all of it.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Okay, one more quick, quick one do give back to
those in need. Chris and us Check got a licensing
deal with the NFL after the jacket she made for
Taylor Swift. Her first design, a Super Bowl themed puffer best,
is being auctioned off to benefit National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
WHOA, this is last night, so I'm sure it's doubled
by now.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
I probably should have checked before this, but just last
night the bid was up to thirty two, seven hundred
amazing with like eighty bits.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
What's what's like a Taylor Swift number that we can
get to here? I feel like, you know, she has numbers.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
For thirteen eighty n Have you seen all of that?
Speaker 2 (40:33):
It is insanity, the amount of numbers and the breakdown
of like thirteen is like thirteenth playoff game.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Like it's beautiful. It's beautiful.
Speaker 4 (40:45):
All right.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
When we come back, we're talking legacies and who has
the most to lose. Tomorrow you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Welcome to our two of Fox Sports Saturday AM Alex

Speaker 2 (41:15):
Super Bowl Saturday, everybody, it is here. Everything comes down
to tomorrow. What's your ideal carmon, your ideal Super Bowl
viewing experience?
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Being there?
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Okay, that's fair. I mean you've also been on the
field when the Bucks won the Super Bowl. This doesn't
feel like a fair question for you.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
I was gonna say, I've like Normy's stuff there too.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
Yeah, yeah, some pretty good success.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
H No, but if it's not if you're not working,
if I'm not working it, I absolutely want to be
on a couch with a few of my friends. I
don't want to be at a like a big party.
You and I we talk about this, were talking about
on the driving I want to pay attention to the game,
and I feel like super Bowl parties are about some
much more than the game, which is fine, yeah, but
like I just want some good food. Yeah, and the
(42:04):
friends that I trust to watch the game with me.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
Oh no, I've gone from like it's changed I used
to do. I'm like big super Bowl parties, like crazy ragers,
like full spread TV's everywhere.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
But I noticed, like I wasn't watching the game as
much as I watched.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Now I'm like, give me the biggest TV possible, yes,
And I know if it's not bigger than my TV,
I'm not coming over because like, I will not watch all.
I have a very big TV, the biggest that my
wall can fit. I basically like went like okay, edge
to edge to window to door. This is where it's going,
and I want to be on my couch with my dogs,
with my favorite snacks and making my buffalo chicken dip
(42:46):
tomorrow tacos.
Speaker 3 (42:47):
That's such an amazing quintessential super Bowl dude, like a
buffalo chicken dip.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Oh, it's amazing. It's yeah to come over. It's gone
in ten minutes. It's like crack.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
But yeah, that's I'm like kind of that too.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
I'm like, I want small group people who love football
and are also going to be paying attention watching. I
also love watching the commercials. I love the commercials just
as much. Those commercial spots cost them like five million dollars.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
Honestly, that's the together.
Speaker 3 (43:12):
That's the downside. Not that anyone who wants to hear this.
It's the inside of working game though. It is because
you don't see the commercial.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Oh man, I have to be on the field and
not the game, and I can't watch the commercials.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
I've been fortunate quite a few, which is great, but
you do you miss the commercials that you see Twitter
like popping off about it and.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
You're just like, god, I wish, yeah that's all that
I know, But then you see it, you know, for
weeks I've already loved that Beckham's commercials.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
I'm obsessed.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
But I'm also like, I was a spice girl, like yes, Stan,
I was sporty, sporty spice okay, always, I was sporty
spies in my secondary in my.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
Fifth grade talent show.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
You guys, I love it.
Speaker 1 (43:47):
I'll share that video.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
I love like three years in a row. It's beautiful.
It's gonna yeah, So I'm excited for there. And then
also like beckham da like greatest, amazing, amazing. Okay, let's
have a great hour two.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
Shall we. I wouldn't want to do this with anyone else.
Speaker 4 (44:02):
Love it.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
We have Dave Hellman, the host of NFL on Fox podcast,
joining us at the bottom of the hour to break
down both these super Bowl teams.
Speaker 1 (44:09):
But that's what we're doing as well, so let's dive
right in.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
We are officially twenty five hours away from Super Bowl
fifty eight in Las Vegas. The chiefs of forty nine ers,
a rematch of the twenty twenty Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
It's been a long week in Vegas. We both got
back yesterday.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
We'll dive into that a little later, but let's start
this hour really taking a look at the challenges these
teams are going to face tomorrow, Right, because we talked
about an hour one, it was a completely different path
for both of them to get here.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
Kind of the tale of two different seasons.
Speaker 7 (44:40):
Right.
Speaker 2 (44:40):
You had forty nine Ers who had one of the
most dominant regular seasons.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
Then you had the Chiefs who.
Speaker 2 (44:48):
Patrick Mahomes like worst statistical season of his career down
year four with the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
It's yeah, no, it was drops.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
He was perfectly on target, and then it kind of
flipped flop in the postseason, like Chiefs just came alive
because it's clean slate. Think of it like a new season.
Once you hit the postseason, Chiefs just absolutely dominated and
the forty nine Ers have had to fight back in
all of their games. But we're resilient and we're able
to come back. So let's start now with the reigning champs,
(45:20):
the Chiefs. You know, they are now facing the most
complete team in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
So what's going to be their biggest hurdle?
Speaker 2 (45:28):
I think it's going to be slowing down the forty
nine ers star studded offensive weapons. The Chiefs were eighteenth
this season and rush yards allowed. What Meanwhile, Christian McAfrey
offensive player the year, led the league in rushing yards
and tied for first in scrimmage touchdowns. So if the
forty nine ers are smart, which they are, they'll run
(45:49):
their offense through McCaffrey tomorrow and if he breaks off
early gets a couple of big runs, Chiefs could be
in for a long game. But that's hard because it's
the Chiefs and it's postseason, so it's just I But
that's not it. They don't just have McCaffrey, right, He
got Deebo Samuels, who's one of the most dynamic offensive
threats because you can use him in so many ways,
(46:11):
the run game, the past game. He's the player you
always kind of have to have your eye on because
you can do so many different things. And don't forget
about the people's tight end. George Kittle, he's got some
unfinished business. After they lost to the Chiefs in the
twenty twenty Super Bowl, he said, as he was still
standing on the sidelines in his gear at the end
of the game, I will be back with a vengeance.
Speaker 1 (46:32):
You will not get the best of me, no, sir.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
But the thing is like, even though the forty nine
Ers are favored they've been favored every single game this season.
After being in Vegas all week and talking to everybody
in Vegas all week, I think most people are rolling
with the Chiefs and doubting the forty nine ers' ability
to get the job done and finish the job, which
hopefully they'll be able to hone that and use that fire.
(46:56):
But I think, yeah, the Chiefs challenge will be slowing
down the just overwhelming amount of offensive weapons that the
forty Niners have.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
We didn't even mention Brandon Ayuk Arizona State's own.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (47:09):
The fact that, yeah, him, George Kittle, even Deebo Samuel
to extend seem like an afterthought to Christian McCaffrey. Deservedly so,
because Christian McCaffrey has been next level an incredible piece
for specifically for a Kyle Shanahan offense, which has evolved too.
A friend of mine, Ben Solak, who writes for The Ringer,
did an incredible piece this week about how we talk
about the Shanahan offense, the Shanahan offense and how it's
(47:31):
matriculated throughout the league. Right, Shanahan doesn't even run that
offense anymore. It has evolved and with his personnel and
having a hybrid player like Christian McCaffrey on top of
all of the things he likes to do with these
with these multiple title or multiple running back sets, I
should say multiple backsets between him. Kyle used check. I
mean they use a full back. They're zigging when others
(47:52):
are zagging. And that's what makes the Shannahan system so
good is because it allows for all of this creativity
and evolution.
Speaker 9 (47:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (47:59):
That being said, though, oh yeah, what do you think
the challenge?
Speaker 3 (48:01):
The Chiefs were able to stop the Ravens run game,
which includes Lamar in the AFEC Championship game. They allowed
only eighty one rushing yards. Yeah, they got four sacks, Yeah,
heuble takeaways. Yes, this Chief's defense is not getting enough love.
Steve Spagnolo, their defensive coordinator, is not getting enough love.
(48:22):
And that is going to be I feel like they
can contend to think what it's.
Speaker 1 (48:27):
Going to be their strength.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
It's kind of going to be the like, oh, yeah, okay,
we might have been eighteenth this season, what's the age old?
Speaker 1 (48:35):
But look look what we did in our last game,
your last game?
Speaker 3 (48:38):
What's the age old? Saying in the NFL defense wins championships.
Speaker 2 (48:41):
Oh yeah, I think it's an all sports offenseales tickets,
defense wins championships.
Speaker 3 (48:45):
Yeah, so I'm not I'm obviously concerned about the forty
nineers offensive weapons. You would be a fool not to be. Yeah,
but I also trust the Kansas City defense to have
a really really good plan for that and the way
that they can move guys, especially in coverage in the field,
and the way that Steves Begnel gets created with pressure. Yeah,
they were ninth and blitzerrate they were top three in
(49:06):
quarterback hurries, which means that they have different ways of
getting to the quarterback and affecting the quarterback. And that
is Rockberty, who for every all the good things that
he deserves, under pressure, yeah, it gets it gets a
little sketchy. And he doesn't have the experience. And if
you looked at him on Media Nite, yeah, you could
tell this was his first time. Yeah it is, and
(49:27):
I mean it is would be right, it would be
for anybody. Like where the chiefs on Media Nite opening
night were so relaxed, like this old News four one.
There was a nervous energy about the Niners. Yeah, and
you could tell so that is to me for the
forty nine Ers going to be the biggest hurdle is
just overcoming the fact that the Chiefs have so much experience, Yeah,
(49:48):
and that this iteration of the Niners.
Speaker 1 (49:50):
You don't even think the Chiefs have a challenge.
Speaker 5 (49:52):
I do.
Speaker 3 (49:53):
I do think the Chiefs have I do think that
you have to get the best of your receiving court.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
For Patrick Mahomes, I mean he has this postseason, it's
been like it feel like click clicked at the right time,
Like it wasn't good during the regular season.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
It did, but I still don't know that I can
completely trust it when your wide receiver one is a rookie, yeah,
and then these are the brightest lights imaginable it is.
And Travis Kelsey can only get you so far. I
know he had over one hundred yards against the Ravens
and he can affect the game very very well. But
I also think that this forty nine Ers defense is
going to have a plan for him too. And if
(50:31):
you can shut down Patrick Mahomes and Travis that Travis
Kelsey connection, and if you can affect Mahomes who it's
really hard because he can play backgard football with the
best of the maneuver, the pocket maneuver in the backfield.
He can buy you ten to twelve seconds on any
given play, which is insane.
Speaker 1 (50:44):
Throw a perfect pass falling down, yes, yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:47):
Which I've witnessed him too.
Speaker 1 (50:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
But you still need these guys to catch the ball,
and I do. I'm still concerned about the Chief's wide
receiver corps.
Speaker 2 (50:54):
Okay, now let's talk about the forty nine You you
shared your biggest challenge for the forty nine ers obviously experience,
lack of experience going against the most experienced team. I'm simple,
I am similar to that the forty nine ers. You're
playing the masters like you're literally Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelcey,
(51:14):
Andy Reid. This is Mahomes' fourth super Bowl in his
six seasons as a starter in the NFL. This is
normal for him, this is expected. This is where he
ends his season AFC Championship games or the super Bowl.
He has all the experience, he has all of the confidence,
(51:37):
and as you mentioned, Mahomes and Kelsey have the most
touchdowns by any receiver quarterback postseason history and it's only
been six seasons together. It's the forty nine ers defense
maybe third overall and overall.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
Defense in the regular season.
Speaker 2 (51:52):
But they haven't faced the Chiefs this season, and the
last time that they faced Mahomes in the playoffs, they
lost in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (52:02):
That's that's the thing that came into play to In
the NC Championship game against the Lions, they were down
so bad, like we talked about in that first half.
Even after the game, Steve Wilks, the forty nine Ers
defensive coordinator, was not happy with his defensive effort. He
was he didn't see the fire that he wanted to see,
and he did not see the fire that it's going
(52:22):
to take to beat the Kansas City Chiefs, even though
they have so much talent, so.
Speaker 2 (52:27):
Much talent, probably the most talented complete team, star studied defense,
Pro Bowl is everywhere right at every position.
Speaker 4 (52:36):
Yeah, and then he had brought party.
Speaker 3 (52:38):
Who was a Pro Bowler himself, for the record, I
just I worry that you if you need that fire,
I mean, this is the game that you're going to
have all the motivation you possibly have, but they can't
that the forty nine ers cannot get down early. I
do not trust them. If they get down even with
all of that offensive firepower, they cannot get down early
(52:58):
and this defense needs a hold up. It it's into
the bargain.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
Yeah, they do.
Speaker 4 (53:01):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (53:01):
Who has the most to lose and who has the
most to gain this Super Bowl? For me, both answers
are on the forty nine ers. Who has the most?
Speaker 2 (53:10):
Again, I think brock Party hands down. If he goes
from the last pick in the draft to a super
Bowl champ in his second season in the NFL, he
will be in a different conversation and I think he
finally gets that respect from all the haters because there
are a lot on Brock Party. You can't deny super
Bowl championship.
Speaker 1 (53:31):
Who has the most?
Speaker 4 (53:32):
So that was sorry?
Speaker 1 (53:33):
Who is the most agained? I say that who is
the most? Again was Brock Purty?
Speaker 4 (53:35):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (53:36):
Good?
Speaker 1 (53:36):
So who has the most to lose? I think it's
Kyle Shanahan.
Speaker 2 (53:41):
He has everything on his resume except a Super Bowl championship,
and if he loses, his two losses in the Super
Bowl will be to Andy Reid and the Chiefs. He
was also the offensive coordinator for the Falcons when they
blew the Super Bowl lead to Tom Brady and the
Patriots in that twenty sixteen season, So I think there's
(54:04):
a lot writing on this.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
For Shannon Haven said though the twenty nineteen Super Bowl
was worse than the Falcons collapse. Really yes, he said that.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
I well, you're the head coach. The head coach, that's different.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
There's more more responsibility, like everything kind of just lands
on you. So who do you think has the most?
Speaker 10 (54:24):
All?
Speaker 1 (54:24):
Most? Again?
Speaker 3 (54:25):
I used to lose. I agree with you, but in
this forty nine or spirit, I will zig can you're zagging?
Speaker 1 (54:29):
Okay, let's go.
Speaker 3 (54:31):
I do think that it's Patrick Mahomes has the most
again because.
Speaker 1 (54:34):
Of the d Reid Does they become a dynasty with
this one?
Speaker 3 (54:38):
I did a whole piece on an on Fox sports
dot com about mahomes first six years versus Tom Brady
six years Okay, for six years of his career. Mahomes' stats, Yeah, blow,
tom Brady's out of the water.
Speaker 4 (54:50):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
To mahomes first season as starter, he led the league
with fifty touchdowns. He has like we were talking like
Matt McMullen was talking about, Yeah, he hasn't finished less
than the AFC championship team because the season hasn't ended
before that.
Speaker 1 (55:07):
That's the normal.
Speaker 3 (55:08):
And if he was to continue at this pace. He
needs three championships though in his first six years to
tie Tom Brady.
Speaker 1 (55:14):
Okay, and continue.
Speaker 3 (55:17):
So he needs he needs I mean statistics, there's plenty
of stats to say obviously that he has had. Tom
Brady had the benefit of so many good defenses early
on in his career. You could argue that Tom Brady
was purely a game manager in the first couple of
years until he got Randy Ross.
Speaker 6 (55:32):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (55:32):
Okay, like which which, Like I said, but you said,
not a bad thing.
Speaker 3 (55:35):
It's not a bad thing.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
I think, Yeah, you want to rebrand the image of
a game manager, right, Okay, So everyone's there's a lot
of hate surrounding at the all the Cam Newton stuff
coming out about the game manager.
Speaker 1 (55:45):
If you're winning games and you're on a good team,
it's not a bad thing.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
Like I said, I really think that there are at
most five game changers at the quarterback position in the
league right now. Yeah, probably more like three or four.
Speaker 4 (55:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (55:55):
I Also, it was a different era of quarterbacking too
for Tom Brady, so that's why his dats don't look
like they compare to Like there was the run game
was much more prevalent in early two thousands. Yeah, you
didn't have just this past happy and extremely productive yardage sholes,
at least offense. Like it wasn't the norm for quarterbacks
to throw for four thousand yards when Tom Brady was
(56:16):
first starting out each season. Now that's the benchmark for
a very quarterback play, right. But that being said, I
think Patch Mahomes needs us and Andy Reid can become
what just the fifth coach to have three Super Bowls
in league history. So yeah, okay, yeah, the head coach
with the same team, team with the same team.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
Bill bill number one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean
it's crazy too.
Speaker 2 (56:44):
But on the other hand, like if Kyle Shanahan wins,
it would be the first father son head coaching duo
to win titles.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
Like here's like, here's a fun fact here.
Speaker 2 (56:55):
Ed McCaffrey and Mike Shanahan won three Super Bowls together
and now their sons, good week, Christian McCaffrey and Kyle
Shanahan have a chance.
Speaker 1 (57:03):
To win one. There it'll balls family.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
I don't know if you saw, but there's been like
so many like fun memes and photos going around of
Christian McAffrey getting lost in the confetti when his dad
on a Super Bowl. I mean, it's the history. These
are just football families.
Speaker 4 (57:18):
So yeah, it's.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
You guys, It's tomorrow. It's tomorrow. We're gonna take a
quick break here. But when we come back, how focus are.
Speaker 1 (57:27):

I think we've been talking about it the whole show,
but Carmen and I got back from.
Speaker 1 (58:11):
A crazy week in Vegas yesterday.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
I mean Vegas was made for events like the Super Bowl,
it felt like everywhere you turn there was some sort
of super Bowl event every day, like the moment you
woke up and walked out of the hotel all night.
But also what a crazy place to try not to
get distracted if you're a player. I mean, Vegas is
sin city for a reason. The place is raging twenty
(58:36):
four to seven casinos betting everywhere. These players cannot bet
and are encouraged not to go out. There was a
quote from Patrick Mahomes telling us, guys, this is a
business trip. I told the guys, if we win, I'll
bring everyone back to Vegas to celebrate. We just talked
to their team reporter, maccmull and he said, thankfully they're staying.
Speaker 1 (58:56):
Like, what is it like forty minutes? Yeah, like outside
of the strip.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
But you've been a team reporter for a super Bowl
winning team, the Tampa Bay Bucks. Take us through what
this week is like kind of leading up to the
big game tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (59:10):
Well, Matt said it too. I mean your game plan
is installed early. You're two weeks to prepare for this game, right,
so you're really prepping that first week. You're installing your
game plan so that when you get to this week
when there's all of these media distractions. Because even if
they're not on the strip, even if they're not going
to event, there were events they were.
Speaker 2 (59:30):
Were they Honors Thursday, Christian McCaffrey and then the New
Heights event was after Honors, so Travis Kelce was there.
Speaker 3 (59:39):
But they're not going to like the concerts and like
the clubs and whatever.
Speaker 1 (59:43):
Hope not.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
But that's exactly why you installed your game plan and
everything like that last week. And so then this week
it's just about reps. It's just about fine tuning so
that you can handle and then they have these media
sessions every single day ye this past week leading up
to the game. So that's why you kind of you
need those two weeks to prepare. Yeah, my super Bowl
(01:00:06):
was a little bit different, or my Super Bowl Buck
super Bowl was a little bit differ because it was COVID. Yeah,
so everything was done was done a little bit digitally.
Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Yeah, easier for the guys.
Speaker 3 (01:00:15):
But that's exactly why you have the guys kind of
stay off the strip, they stay locked in, they stay
with each other. Yeah, that's how all road trips are
with teams, is you pretty much just kind of stay
in the hotel room. If your family in town, they
come to the hotel rather than you kind of going out. Yeah,
they kept whatever events they did do to a minimum.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Okay, that's good. I mean the place to be on
Thursday was NFL Honors. Everyone in the football world was there,
We were there. It felt like everyone who was supposed
to win one. Lamar Jackson got his second MVP well
deserved an incredible honor.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
But do you think he would trade in that MVP
for Super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
Absolutely? Lamar Jackson is a team guy football team sport.
He would absolutely take team success over individuals. That's the
way these guys are wired. And he wants that for
the city of Baltimore, for the Ravens organization, for his teammates,
all of that. I don't think it's even a question
of giving that, of surrendering that, because what what does
what does they get you?
Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
I mean, it's not ye, it's like a player. But
I think Super Bowls a bigger, bigger legacy boost.
Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
How many times we talked about Hall of famers that
are fringe Hall of famers because they didn't win enough championships, yeah,
or championships at.
Speaker 2 (01:01:23):
All, But like two m vps is like him oh yeah,
more than one m VP. I think kind of like
brings you into that next.
Speaker 3 (01:01:31):
Hall of Famers Super Bowls.
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
Yeah, yep, yeah. Did you have a favorite moment from
NFL Honors?
Speaker 3 (01:01:36):
I really I loved so Because I covered the NFC
North for Fox Sports, I've gotten Ookarr Cousins a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
I love Magic Good.
Speaker 2 (01:01:47):
I started hysterically laughing in my seat. I had no
idea what was going on. Like all of a sudden,
they just they look confused. Sold it so well, so well,
they looked so confused. And then like the magic mic
guys coming, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:01:59):
Come out, but they're in and they're in shirts, and
You're like, who are these guys?
Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
What's happening on the stage? Like are they having a
technical edgue?
Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
And all of a sudden, Jenuine's pony comes on and
I was like, oh my god, it's on, It's on,
And sure enough, like it was. I mean, I don't
know guys appreciated that as much.
Speaker 1 (01:02:14):
Oh it was beautiful, like choreographed dance that he practiced.
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
And her Cousins is able to make fun of himself
constantly and still do things like that.
Speaker 4 (01:02:22):
I love him for it.
Speaker 3 (01:02:22):
I love him for it.
Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
And then I also love the Walter Payton Man of
the Year Steelers Cameron Hayward.
Speaker 1 (01:02:29):
I mean, how do you not how do you not
love this guy?
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
He was crying when he was talking about his family,
how his father inspired him, his mother helps run his foundation,
Hayward House.
Speaker 1 (01:02:38):
He said, everybody knows who he is, who she is
in town.
Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
I mean he's been nominated what six times, and like
finally one like it was just it was it was
a beautiful night.
Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
That was my first honors So I was like, yeah,
I'm really happy.
Speaker 3 (01:02:51):
I've only done the Reight card, but I had been
inside the show, so that was really cool.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
That was a great show.
Speaker 4 (01:02:56):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:56):
All right, Now let's check in with Martin Weiss and
see what's trending.
Speaker 8 (01:03:01):
You know, I was surprised to see Kirk Cousins moving
like that just a few months after the Aco.
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
Oh my god, I was thinking about that too. His Achilles, Right,
isn't he in recovery? He should not be like grinding
and moving like this right now?
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
I think him and Aaron Rodgers had a group chat.
I'm not lying. I think that that's true. I think
he talks about the fact that him and Aaron Rodgers
had an Achilles group chat.
Speaker 4 (01:03:23):
I okay, what a chat that I never want to join.
Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Is he doing like the dolphin like mating noises?
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
No, I don't think he did any of that. I
don't think he did any of that. I think it
was more of like.
Speaker 8 (01:03:34):
Actual We'll see, boy, we'll see hopefully Aaron Rodgers able
to make a recovery like Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
You know, we'll see if you see him dancing with
the stars or someone else.
Speaker 8 (01:03:44):
Line hot take super Bowl weekend is here as the
ladies was just talking about Chiefs guff guard Joe Toney.
Speaker 4 (01:03:51):
He won't play.
Speaker 8 (01:03:51):
He's ruled out with a pector injury. Moved to injury reserve.
Nick Alagretti will start in his place. Kansas City running
back Jared McKinnon active, but will be a game time
decision to see if he can have an impact on
Super Bowl fifty eight forty nine ers. No starters listed
on his injury report. The Bears have the number one
pick in NFL. Media is reporting it will cost a
historic amount of compensation to move off of that pick
(01:04:13):
elsewhere in the top five. New England Patriots maybe not
looking for an historic amount of compensation, but some Nonetheless,
they're shopping the number three pick, and it seemed like
they will be addressing the quarterback position in free agency.
Maybe they said, call saw Kirk Cousins dancing and said
that might be our guy. Former Washington offensial coordinator Ryan
Grubb was slated to be the next official coordinator at
the University of Alabama.
Speaker 4 (01:04:34):
Instead, he will go right back to Seattle.
Speaker 8 (01:04:36):
This time though, he's the Seahawks official coordinator under new
head coach Mike McDonald. Los Angeles Chargers are hiring the
former linebacker Navarro Bowman of the forty nine Ers to
coach their linebackers. That reunite him with his former head coach,
Jim Harbaugh. Oklahoma City thundersigned bis Neck beyond bo for
the rest of the season. They also got pounded today
by the Dallas Mavericks one forty six to one eleven
(01:04:59):
Luca Doncas with thirty two to nine nine assists.
Speaker 4 (01:05:02):
I should say.
Speaker 8 (01:05:03):
Championships president Daryl Morey is quote hopeful that Joel Embiid
will be able to return for this postseason run. Former
net point guard Spenser Dinwiddie has signed with the Los
Angeles Lakers one point five million dollars for the remainder
of the season, uses up their mid level exception, and
the Los Angeles Clippers have beaten the Detroit Pistons the
last nine times out. Pistons did have a fourteen point
(01:05:25):
lead at some point throughout this game, but right now
they're trailing in ninety six to ninety two, six point
thirty left in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:05:32):
Black to you, guys, Thank you Martin.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
You're listening to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here
with Carmen Vitali. We are broadcasting life from the Tyrek
dot Com studios in Los Angeles. Thank you for spending
your Super Bowl Saturday with Carmen and me. But it
is time for our next guest. This man is talking
football all day, every day. He is the host of
NFL on Fox podcast. Please welcome Dave Hellman. Dave, how
(01:05:56):
are we doing? How are we feeling today?
Speaker 10 (01:05:58):
Guys? I'm ready for the Super Bowl. I feel like
I've been talking about it for a month. I'm ready
to go.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
Yeah, you've been talking about it for five months.
Speaker 10 (01:06:06):
Yeah, a good point.
Speaker 2 (01:06:08):
But this is kind of what we've all been waiting for.
This season, the Super Bowl less than twenty four hours away.
We have a twenty twenty rematch with some incredible stories
in this game. But what's the storyline that you were
most excited about?
Speaker 10 (01:06:24):
I think I mean excited. I you know, there's so
much more to it, and when you break down the strategy,
obviously there's it goes way deeper than this.
Speaker 6 (01:06:33):
But I.
Speaker 10 (01:06:35):
I just I really enjoy what Super Bowls do for legacies,
And like I know, Patrick Mahomes is obviously going to
get a lot of talk this week about chasing Brady
and all that good stuff. But the other side of
it is way more interesting to me because this is
this is Kyle Shanahan's second shot as a head coach,
(01:06:56):
third shot total. You know, we know what happened in
the last two times he was in this game. It
hasn't gone well for him in the second half. And
I love the kind of dichotomy between this is especially
you know now that Bill Belichick.
Speaker 5 (01:07:12):
Is out of the league.
Speaker 9 (01:07:13):
Other than Andy Reid maybe.
Speaker 10 (01:07:14):
Mike Tomlins, this is the most respected head coach in
the NFL. His offense has completely infiltrated the league. Like
everything about the way the league looks right now is
doing large parts of Kyle Shanahan. He's got such a
wonderful resume and his ability speaks for itself, but he
hasn't gotten over the hump. And if he doesn't tomorrow,
(01:07:36):
now you're talking about zero to two as the head coach.
And also when you add the Atlanta collapse on top
of that when he was with the Falcons, it's very
interesting to think that a guy who's done so much
right could have that monkey on his back. So, you know,
I don't know if anybody in this game wants it
more than Kyle Shanahan does. And that's obviously saying a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:07:58):
I mean, there's also been a lot of time about
his QB brock Purty. He's gotten a lot of doubt,
a lot of hate, But in his first full season
he has led this team to the super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:08:08):
What does a win tomorrow mean for his career?
Speaker 10 (01:08:12):
It's funny because I mean, I think it could mean everything,
you know, and it kind of goes back to Kyle
Shanahan too, of like, if you get it, then you've
got it from here on out. Yeah, if you don't
like how how demoralizing is it for the forty nine ers?
To like to start over again, like what don't they
what don't they have right now? You know, like they
(01:08:34):
got all you could ask for. And I think most
people would agree this isn't a bad Chiefs team, but
it's the worst Chiefs team of the of the Mahomes era. Yes,
and so if you if you don't get over the
hump here, when is it ever going to happen? And
to take that back to Brock Purty, it's fascinating to
think if Purty doesn't win, I'm not saying that the
(01:08:55):
Niners are going to dump him, yeah, but you know
he's he's a seventh round pick playing on a rookie d.
They haven't committed to him beyond the next two years.
And depending how he plays, I mean, just just wait
for the talk shows on Monday. If Brock Perdy plays
the way he did against Baltimore, for example, you know,
if he just has a terrible game and doesn't look
(01:09:15):
ready for the moment. Not now you're thinking about like, oh, yeah,
the forty nine ers sold the farm to try to
get a better quarterback. That's how they wound up with
Trey Lance. Kyle Shanahan knew what he was looking for.
Whereas if brock Purty wins, it reminds me a lot
of Tom Brady, honestly, where you kind of buy yourself
the street cred of Yeah, of course we're going to
(01:09:36):
commit to brock Purty. Of course he's going to be
our quarterback for the long term. And you know, I
think this game, obviously it cements his legacy because he
wins the Super Bowl as the starring quarterback, but winning
this game I think cements him as the quarterback of
the forty nine ers for at least the next four
or five six years. Whereas you know, if he doesn't,
(01:09:58):
I'm not going to say all bets are off, but
I think the future is a little bit murkier.
Speaker 3 (01:10:03):
I'm glad you brought up the Tom Brady comparison, though,
because I talked earlier on the show about how you
could you would classify Tom Brady, probably early in his career,
as more of a game manager, and we've had that
term thrown around so much in this postseason in general
when it comes to brock Party. My argument though, is
that it's not a bad thing. But listening to you
(01:10:24):
talk just now, it's kind of like walking a tightrope.
It's how it's not a bad thing if you continue
to win and your team continues to do well, But
you don't have the benefit of the doubt as a
game manager when your team doesn't do well. So where
do you fall on the game manager conversation? And can
(01:10:45):
brock Party surpass that like Brady did, into kind of
the game changer qualification or classification with kind of these
this super Bowl win or with sustained success.
Speaker 10 (01:10:59):
It's it's such fun conversation, and I mean, I think
Kyle Shanahan's talked about it. I think we've kind of
lost the plot in this whole conversation because, like you know,
Carmen our colleague Henry McKinnon wrote a great story this
week about how, I mean, you could argue Patrick Mahomes
is doing a better job of managing the game this
year than he ever has in his entire life. You know,
he doesn't have the explosive element of his offense, like
(01:11:22):
those crazy deep shots and amazing plays that we're used
to associating with Patrick Mahomes haven't been there all year.
He's just operating his team's offense at an insane level.
So really, when you talk about game changers, I mean,
I think every quarterback has to manage a game. And
when you talk about a game changer, you really just
(01:11:43):
mean a guy who is a freakish talent that's just
incredibly hard to find. Whether that's Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson,
going back to Cam Newton, I think that's really what
that means. But every quarterback has to manage a game
at some point in his career. And I do love
I love the parallel to Tom Brady because you're right,
like Tom Brady, he came through in the clutch early
(01:12:06):
in his career, but he was limited as a quarterback,
like the Patriots were not asking him to do the
heavy listing on those teams. But what happened he cashed
in on his early opportunities. He won the first Super
Bowl he ever played in. He won the first three
Super Bowls he ever played in, and obviously, when you
have that guy, you're going to commit to him. Brady
did not become the elevating factor of his team until
(01:12:29):
year seven eight nine in the NFL. I mean, O
seven was a long time after two thousand and one,
So you've got to cash in on these opportunities in
order to stay around long enough and yeah, that's exactly
my point. If brock Perty wins, then I think he's
in place as the Niners quarterback for like I said,
at least the next half decade, and maybe he has
a chance to become a guy that you can build
(01:12:51):
your team around. Whereas if he doesn't, now you're back
in the same conversation the Niners were in four years ago,
where it's like, yeah, Jimmy's good, but can we win
a Super Bowl with this guy?
Speaker 4 (01:13:02):
Well, let's talk about the other guy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:04):
Because Patrick Mahomes is heading to his fourth Super Bowl
in his six seasons as a starter. He's already won two.
What would it mean for mahomes legacy to win a
third tomorrow? Is officially a dynasty or the Chiefs officially
a dynasty?
Speaker 10 (01:13:18):
So I think I have a more forgiving definition of
the Chiefs aretin dynasty right now in my opinion. I mean,
we haven't played an AFC Championship game without them since
twenty seventeen, and they've already one. They've won multiple Super Bowls,
they've been in two more. Maybe they'll win another one,
(01:13:39):
So I think they already are. And the fun thing
for Patrick Mahomes is I don't think he has a
whole lot to lose in this game, like for me personally,
For me personally, Patrick Mahomes is one of the five
best to ever do it. Today he could retire right now. Yeah,
and so that's a great place for him to be.
But if if you win, I think it really kickstarts
(01:14:04):
that conversation. And you know, I think you know, he
was asked about it on Monday night at the opening
ceremonies of like, seven is the number and really from
here on out, like MVPs don't matter, touchdown passes don't matter,
like the final stats don't matter. It's just about the
number seven. And if he wins tomorrow night, then he's
(01:14:25):
he's basically he's you know, he's halfway there, is ish
with I don't know, probably another decade plus to play.
I mean, I don't know if he's going to play
as long as Brady did, but he's going to have
a hell of a lot more opportunities to do this.
And you think about it, he already won one with
a lesser team last year and he might do it again.
Speaker 9 (01:14:43):
And you know, you.
Speaker 10 (01:14:44):
Imagine with the Chiefs track record in the draft, they're
going to do a good job of restocking that offense
for him, And and yeah, I mean if he wins,
I feel comfortable. To me, if I already think he's
one of the five best, then then if he went tomorrow,
he's well on his way to being it's not better
than Brady, then right there with him by the time
(01:15:06):
his career is over all.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
Right, Dave, before we let you go, this one's got
to be quick. Who's winning the Super Bowl tomorrow? Who's
your pick?
Speaker 10 (01:15:14):
I said it on the NFL and Fox Poday. This
game gives This game gives me deja vu. I think
the Niners are a much better team on paper, but
so were the Eagles last year.
Speaker 5 (01:15:23):
And it's it's.
Speaker 10 (01:15:24):
Cliche and maybe it's oversimplified, but I'm not betting against
Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
How defense it's so hard you can't.
Speaker 10 (01:15:31):
I can't. I'll take the defense to limit the Niners
just enough for Pat to do his magic. And I've
got the Chiefs winning by four.
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Or five, okay, and me so ma MVP then I mean, yeah, yeah,
I mean, if.
Speaker 10 (01:15:48):
The quarterback plays well, then then he's going to win it.
So yeah, I would imagine this will be Super Bowl
MVP Number three for old Patrick oh Man.
Speaker 2 (01:15:55):
Dave, thank you so much for all of your insight
in joining us have a thank you underful super Bowl tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:16:01):
We'll be tuning into the NFL on Fox Podcast.
Speaker 10 (01:16:04):
Really I appreciate that, guys.
Speaker 5 (01:16:05):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:16:07):
All Right, we're gonna take one more break here.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
When we come back, Carmen and I are giving our
game picks, some Super Bowl prop bets. It all comes
down to this. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome
back to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here with
Carmen Vitally. We are broadcasting live from Tyrek dot Com
Studios in Los Angeles, and it is officially time you
(01:16:28):
guys for our Super Bowl picks sprinkled in with some
prop bets.
Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
So producer Patrick lead us through.
Speaker 9 (01:16:35):
All right, Alex and Carmen. We got this Super Bowl tomorrow,
fifty eight on top. We got the Niners taking on
the Chiefs, and I'll tell you what. Yeah, the favorite
is slight, but it is turning to the San Francisco
forty nine ers two and a half.
Speaker 2 (01:16:53):
Points, Okay, so that's kind of it's gone from two
and a half to one and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:16:56):
Yeah, straight up pick that that's not even a spread
at this point.
Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
No, all right, so we're starting with who's winning, who's
winning the game?
Speaker 1 (01:17:06):
Okay, you guys, this is this is hard for me.
This was hard.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
I'm in a bit of a pickle because when we
made our brackets at the start of the postseason, I
picked the forty nine Ers to win it all. But
then I said, if the Kansas City Chiefs win the
AFC Championship game, I am never betting against Patrick Mahomes again.
Speaker 4 (01:17:26):
So here we are.
Speaker 2 (01:17:28):
I picked the forty nine Ers at the start to win,
and then I said, I'm never betting against the Chiefs
in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:17:34):
So what am I going with.
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
I'm going with the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes and Travis
Kelcey and Andy Reid because they just put on a
masterclass once a postseason hits. And I said, you cannot
bet against this man. He is the best quarterback in
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
Right now. Give me Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (01:17:49):
Yeah, this isn't hard for me because I learned that
lesson a long time. Again, Andy Reid, giving given two
weeks to prepare for this game, I can't bet against him.
I can't bet against Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelcey, who
have rediscovered their connection after it faltering a little bit
in the regular season. I'm picking the Chiefs too.
Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Do you know what worries me is everyone's picking the
Chiefs right now and that's when the forty nine ers
are gonna win. Is like everyone's betting against us now.
Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
Like I don't feel great about this, no, but that's
what's gonna make it such a good game.
Speaker 9 (01:18:21):
Okay, all right, all right, so we have our winners. Okay, Now,
who is going to be the MVP of said game?
Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
Well? I picked Chiefs, So I'm going Patrick Mahomes. He's going.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
You know, he's two for three in Super Bowls. He's
two for three as a Super Bowl MVP. If they win,
it's going to be because of Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (01:18:41):
I think that there is a chance that it could
end up being Travis Kelsey because if he makes some
sort of game winning play, clutch play the way that
he caught that ball fade away style. Let's you know,
I mean, we're leaning into the tailors.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
I am here for all of it. Sure, I love
it so much, Okay, love it. Let's get some some
prop bets. All right, we got some prop bets now, ladies.
We have, of course, at the end of the game,
we have the aforementioned gatorade color.
Speaker 4 (01:19:11):
What color are we going with?
Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
Easy, I'm doing red since both teams are red. Dramatic effect.
Also like bad blood for the Swifties.
Speaker 3 (01:19:18):
Oh yeah, no, it's got it's got to be red.
This is red versus red, Tailor's version, right, I love
it all right.
Speaker 9 (01:19:26):
Next, of course, at the beginning of the game, we
have a coin toss. Where are we going? Heads of tails?
Speaker 2 (01:19:29):
Like, people bet a lot of money on this, which
is crazy, you do. It's a fifty to fifty chance, right,
I'm going to take heads.
Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
Oh tails never fails?
Speaker 4 (01:19:37):
Oh damn every time?
Speaker 3 (01:19:39):
Okay, and twice on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:19:40):
Literally, I'm here for it.
Speaker 4 (01:19:41):
All right, we got that now. Of course, Taylor Swift's
going to be at the game, and those.
Speaker 1 (01:19:46):
Prop bets, and there are a lot of prop bets
for the Swifties.
Speaker 9 (01:19:50):
In fact, how many times will the broadcast show Tailor
over under is a five and a half points.
Speaker 2 (01:19:56):
Over easy, because it's it's going to be before the anthem,
during the anthem, and then anytime that Travis Kelsey touches
the ball, especially.
Speaker 3 (01:20:05):
If the Chiefs win to can you think about the
post game?
Speaker 9 (01:20:07):
It's going to I'm going to be over so so hard,
all right now, speaking of data, Tony Rome was going
to be covering the game.
Speaker 2 (01:20:16):
Which Taylor Swift song? Do you think he will reference
First Bad Blood immediately?
Speaker 3 (01:20:21):
His favorite famous song, shake it Off? Shake it Off?
Like maybe it's I feel like he's got it. He's
going to take the low Hanging Fruit, so whatever her
most famous song.
Speaker 4 (01:20:30):
Okay, I gotta know. And then one more final one
halftime show opener for Usher. What song?
Speaker 3 (01:20:35):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, see I think that's going to be
in the middle somewhere. Maybe I'm going with oh my God.
Can you imagine like him coming out with the God?
Speaker 1 (01:20:44):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:20:45):
Thank you so much for spending your Saturday afternoon with
carme and me. Have a fun and safe super Bowl weekend,
and I hope you
