Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports where Welcome.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
To Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here with Tracy Sandler.
Thank you for spending your Saturday afternoon with us. I
hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Yesterday, fireworks have been wild.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
They're all over la like absolutely insane. I worked late
Thursday night. My drive home on the one ten through
downtown La usc south central Watts wild, like full blown
fireworks show, like right off the side of the freeway.
And you, guys, I've been sober for nine months, so
if I am, if I am.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
Distracted, I can't.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I was like literally looking around me, like please, I
hope everyone's paying attention.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
It is midnight, it is.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
It was crazy.
Speaker 5 (00:47):
I was driving over the Dodger game and I said
to my friends of the car, I'm like, I feel
I just need to look very forward.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Oh, I can't let anything to start insane. I forget
it's legal.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
We have cities in Los Angeles where it is legal
to like these insane fireworks. I also can't believe Tracy
was at the Dodger game last night.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Absolute beat down. We can just forget about yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Didn't you stayed till the end. I did to watch
the fireworks. I literally was watching on TV. I was like,
I don't know how many fans are going to sit
through this absolute beat down.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
You were one of those fans.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
And there were more people than you'd think, I think
because of the fireworks and it being fourth of July.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
But my friends I were gonna leave it.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
We were like, well, stay till the seventh and then
at that point I was like, you know what, it's
the fourth of July.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
We've made it this far. Let's say for the fireworks
we did.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Can I just say, like to the point, like when
you decide to put a position player on the mound,
what there has to be some sort of thing.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
In baseball where we can just call it.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Because that's like, I agree, that's like throwing in the towel,
that's waven the white flag, like you have officially given
up and said, oh, we're not going to be able
to come back at that point, there should be a Okay,
tap tap, I'm out it. Let's just call it what
it is right now, because now, like, what are you doing.
You're literally just trying to finish the game, but you're
(02:06):
putting a position player throwing like a toss, a forty
mile per hour toss, Like it's something needs to change there.
Baseball's been so great about like updating their rules and
like evolving the game. I'm just throwing it out there
that needs to be something they need to do too.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
I agree.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
You know, if you have to pitch a full five
innings for to get a win, a full five innings
if it starts raining, but you get the five ins,
it's a game.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
I say, by the fifth inning, if.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
It is eighteen to one or sixteen to one, everybody
should be able to agree to be like, you know what,
it's okay, We're going to move on with our with
our day and be back tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Again.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Score doesn't matter. It's once you decide to put in
a position player.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Off that it's that moment. It's that moment, okay.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Definitely past a certain amount of innings, like say, like again,
like you you need what five innings to get an
official way you make your pitcher. Yeah, the seventh inning stretch.
If you get through the seventh inning stretch and you
decide to put a position player on the mound, call
the game. I think that it's fair call the frickin' game.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
I do that is don't disagree with that. I think
they'd be great, and I'd say it on both ofs.
I was at a Dodger game where they were winning
fifteen to do yeah, and it was it probably would
have been best to just call the game.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, just call the game. All right, guys, we have
so much to get to today.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
We witness history in LA this week, Kershawn joining the
three thousand club.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
We'll get to that a little later in the show.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
We're gonna hit some NFL Steelers making moves, but is
it enough to move the wind needle?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
NBA trades become officially official tomorrow. We've got USA versus
Mexico in the Gold Cup Final tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Which is gonna be insane. I love that rivalry.
Speaker 2 (03:40):

Speaker 3 (03:58):
On YouTube.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Now, as I mentioned, great show today, we're gonna have Dodgers'
broadcaster Jose Mota joining us in about thirty minutes to
talk about that historic.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Night in LA.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Then we have NBA veteran and Rockets broadcaster Ryan Hollins,
an Hour two executive producer Ian with US Today technical
producer Chris Martin wise at the news desk.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
But let's start in the.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
NBA, since the new league year officially starts tomorrow and
all these reported trades and signings will officially become official.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Martin and I were talking about this last weekend.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
We need them to move up the official league year
to before the draft because it is ridiculous, Like, yeah,
that's weird, Like we already know that trades have happened.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
It's already like everything's kind of done, pending.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Usually a physical, but like, just move it up before
the draft, like that's when all the big moves are happening.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Trades are happening, Like it's just it's so silly.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Okay, But we're going to start here in LA because
the Lakers made all kinds of moves.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
The last few weeks really has been wild.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
First, the Bus family selling the team then Lebron picking
up his player option, then Luca looking like he has
revenge body going on, and final really does oh wow,
talk about revenge. Yeah, yeah, it's chef's kiss. And then
finally the Lakers got their big man. So let's start there. Obviously,
again still waiting for everything to become officially official tomorrow,
(05:27):
but DeAndre Ayton has reportedly signed a two year deal
with the Lakers. He cleared free agent see waivers Wednesday evening,
and you know that there were talks that he was
kind of really deciding between the Lakers and the Pacers.
Obviously went with the Lakers, and the big question here
is will this work. First of all, he fills a
(05:49):
big hole that the Lakers desperately needed that we saw
once we hit the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
It was like, oh, yeah, no, they need a big man.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yes they do.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
They had That is a hue missing piece.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
But there have been a lot of reports that the
Blazers were tired with Ayton's behavior. He was showing up late,
skipping rehab appointments, throwing tantrums in the locker room when
he was benched. I can't that will not fly in La,
especially with Lebron, James leading that locker room that will
(06:22):
get shut down immediately.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
It also will not fly with the new ownership group.
Can you look at what they've done with the Dodgers
and they're willing to move on?
Speaker 4 (06:32):
Oh yeah, no, they'll say goodbye. They'll say goodbye.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Luca's even fighting for his next big contract with the
Lakers right now.
Speaker 5 (06:38):
When they bought when they bought the team, when Bark
Walder brought the team and Luca put out a statement,
I was like, oh yeah, Luke. Luca just was like okay, yep,
for time to And that's I think part of where
the revenge body is coming from.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
It It will not fly.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
No, I think maybe it would be good for him
to have Lebron Reportedly Luca was a big part of it.
They're the same a DeAndre and has really hit his
prime or really hasn't hit his full potential.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
But no, that is not gonna fly here. And if
he's doing that, they'll just be like see you.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
And the thing is is like now, It's a reason
this is also so interesting. He's not gonna be playing
with two absolute superstars in Lebron James and Luca, And
if Ayton blows this opportunity with big names like that
and a storied franchise like the Lakers. That's something that
will tarnish your career and your reputation. You might not
get a second chance after that. I also might be
(07:32):
a blindly optimistic Laker fan here, But if anyone can
influence change, it's Lebron James. I've talked about it before.
I call it the Brady and Lebron effect. When you're
playing with like all around goats, it inspires and it
elevates everyone's game around them. Your attitude is better, your
game gets better. You just want to be better at everything.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
I agree with that.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
I agree with that, and I think that was true
of Luca even when he first got to LA. Yeah,
he wanted not only did he want to prove him
avers leb wrong, but he wanted to be better. I
think we're seeing that in the off season program of
what we're seeing of Luca. We don't know exactly what
he's doing, but ye're seeing the results.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Dude, do you see side by side photos Though it's
unbelievable Loka at this time last year and Luca now, you're.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Like, oh, yeah, it's a whole.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
We're going to get into that in just a moment.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
But let's move to the next move that the Lakers
made last week or maybe really Lebron picking up his
fifty two point six million dollar player option. And there's
a lot to unpack here because he has a new
trade clause in his contract. But his agent, Rich paulul
came out and basically said, Lebron wants to compete for
a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future,
he understands that, but he values a realistic chance of
(08:42):
winning it all, kind of basically calling out, they're going
to be watching the moves that the Lakers make this
off season and if he didn't like or think that
they were in a win now state, the rumor mills
started buzzing, like, oh my gosh, is Lebron going to
request a trade? And then we saw him back in
Cleveland Wednesday wearing a welcome home hat while golfing.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And that again got everybody buzzing.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
And he knows what he's doing.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
I talked about this on the Herd, like Lebron is
a media genius. Within thirty minutes of him posting that,
we were talking about it live on National TV, Like, okay,
welcome home back in Cleveland. Obviously that's another top team.
Would he request to get traded there? Personally, I think
Lebron James is going to be a Laker next season.
(09:31):
He has been very vocal about how much he loves Luca.
He only got to play twenty five games with him
last season. Luca was coming off a calf injury, and
we saw just what happened with Aliburton when you rush
back too soon from a calf injury. Yes, now, okay,
when you look at lebron situation, Yes, the Lakers are
now under new ownership, but this is ownership that.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Knows how to win.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Like, yes it, Lebron's not gonna have as much control
because it's not the family friendly deal that he signed
up for with the Bus family.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
But they did just go and get their big man.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
It was the.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Best available option on the market, so they have their center.
They resigned Jackson Hayes's Aighton's backup, and then on top
of it, Luca looks insanely fit for the first time
in his career.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
I saw a.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Post I was like, oh, so I love Luca. Anybody's
ever listened to me on the show notes. But I
saw a post I was like, oh, oh, hello, Luca,
he looks amazing, And I say that he looks amazing,
but the reality is he's been putting in the work.
I mean, arewon smoothies Perhaps I don't know, lots of
time in the gym. Who's to say, but all of
(10:38):
the things, and I think for Lebron seeing that is important.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
To be honest, it is, that's gonna make a big difference.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
And they're gonna have a full, healthy off season training together,
filling the holes that were needed. And you also forever
they still have Austin Reeves for another year. Lebron has
kind of been like a mentor to him, like he
saw potential in him his rookie season.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Said oh, and don't forget that his son is still
on the team.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
So if Lebron leaves like Browny's kind of sol ye,
that's fair putting that out there. And I think the
Lakers have a legitimate chance to make a championship run
if all these pieces stay healthy.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
And you mentioned the ownership group knowing how to win,
and they will do what they need to do too
with us, they're not afraid to be so therefore.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Things are like second yes to like what's it going
to take to win? Opposed to the Bus family, which
again like it was a family run business, it was
like you are family, we will take care of you forever.
That's number one, but will also win and try to
do our best to win. Along with that, this new
ownership is like no, no, no, winning is number.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
One, number one, and they'll give them the pieces they
need to do. So, yeah, and then it's going to
be on Ayton and Lebron and Luca and Austin reeves
to perform with those pieces around them.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
So it's going to be really interesting.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
I think it's it's you know, bitter sweet for Lakers
fans in a way that the Bus family embodies the Lakers.
That is it does, it's it's how we've brought up
and like it's it's just everything. But it also opens
up this new era of really being able to win.
So if you thought people hated Lakers fans before, yeah,
(12:16):
ready people, let's go.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
All right, Well, let's talk a little bit about Luca though,
because honestly, I don't understand.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
I don't understand why he's getting so much hate.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
This man has been a top he's getting he's been
a top five NBA player, and honestly, like I just
trying to wrap my head around it. I think people
are trying to make sense of the trade and they
still can't because it doesn't make sense. And it's that weird,
like if someone got dumped, there must be something wrong
with them, opposed to looking at the person who was
(12:45):
stupid enough to let that person go. And I think
that is the situation we need to focus on with Luca.
He's not the problem. No, he is not the problem.
MAVs were the problem and they were the stupid ones
to let him go. And now everybody is just trying
to rationalize the situation and you can't.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
It doesn't make sense. And the Lakers won.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
When Nico said that, he didn't realize how big of
effect it was going to have on the fans. Dad
told me everything I need to know about the MAVs
and how it's so was on them.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
But what do you mean, he was your like fan
favorite face of the franchise, the reason people bought season tickets.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
One hundred percent guy, mm hmmm, one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
And then I think for the Lakers, and I think
this was maybe kind of an unfairly because the trade
was so shocking and such a big deal. I felt
like Luca this past season was basically got them to
where they got, Like he got them farther than I
think they would have.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Gone without him.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
He's really he was more about the future, but he
got them a lot farther than they would have been
this year, and now it's what are we going to
do going forward?
Speaker 4 (13:44):
What are we going to put around him?
Speaker 5 (13:45):
So I always felt like the trade was a little
bit more the future than just then, like this season
getting them to a championship, because that wasn't happening.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
No, no, no, no, because they gave up a lot and
there was a lot of holes to fill. Plus he
was injured the first half of the season, so it's
like him getting back on the court for the first
time with the Lakers was also him getting back in shape,
getting back in basketball shape.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
You can be in good shape, but it's different game shapes.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Different, yes, than like physical working out in the gym,
Like you've got to build up the stamina.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
You gotta like get your timing right, you gotta get that.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
There's so much that you have to do, even chemistry wise,
like it we saw glimpses of greatness with Luca and
Lebron in that small sample size that we got of
them together. And I think that excited like your fans
because we saw like how great they could be.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
But then we got a nice reality check of like.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Okay, yeah, no, there's still a lot of missing pieces
with his franchise, but when it works.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
To watch out, it's gonna be really exciting.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Watch out, like and again like we're gonna get a
full blown Revenge Body season from Luca, Like if he
was putting up those top n when he was quote
not in shape. Mm hm, imagine what this season is
going to look like now that he has to prove
himself to new ownership and we already saw like he
put out he's been he's been actively putting stuff out
(15:11):
to show that he deserves to be here, full healthy offseason,
full season with Lebron, James a chip on his shoulder.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
Beware, like, watch out, this is gonna be scary.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Can we bring back the Revenge Body show and have Luca?
Speaker 5 (15:25):
I mean I don'ate Luca and side by side of
the MAVs he and Nico, and I mean I don't
hate it.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
I'm just saying, everybody's into the fun reality TV.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
I don't hate it, dude, Revenge Body, Lucas Style, Wild,
into it Wild.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
All right, We're gonna take a quick break here, but
when we come back, who are your top ten NFL quarterbacks?
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Iding into the season. We have a lot of thoughts.
That's snacks on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Okay, guys.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Earlier this week, Fox Sports put out their top ten
quarterback list. I'm gonna read it off for you, okay.
Number one, Josh Allen, number two, Patrick Mahomes, number three,
Lamar Jackson number four, Joe Burrow number five, Jalen Hurts
number six, Jared Goff number seven, Baker Mayfield, number eight,
(16:55):
Justin Herbert, number nine, Jada Daniels, and number ten Dak Press.
Speaker 8 (17:00):
God.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I have some thoughts right off the top here, Patrick
Mahomes is still the number one quarterback in the league.
That is absolutely ridiculous to me to put Josh Allen
before him, who still doesn't have any Super Bowls, doesn't
have the playoff success, can't get past Patrick Mahomes in
the postseason.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Martin is like ready to chime in, he is this
are you?
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Are you literally looking at me to to talk back
at me for a moment here, I saw this kind
of like wave his hand like that.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
That to me is like number one.
Speaker 8 (17:33):
What I was saying, I was telling Ian put this
on the list from my show.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
Then yeah, but you're gonna have to wait to hear
You'll have to wait to hear him.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
That to me is just like.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
No.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
And then the other one is Matthew Stafford needs to
be in the top ten, having justin Herbert and Dak
who don't have any playoff success, even Jared Goff over
Matthew Stafford who won a super Bowl just a few
years ago. Go I think Goff is a little high
here at six as well, if we're going to go
on there, and then Dak at ten best quarterback. He's
(18:10):
also the highest paid quarterback, but I don't think he's
better than brock Purty. And I am just going to
preach this from the rooftop. You guys, put some respect
on brock Perty's name. Just because he was a last
pick in the draft does not take away from what
he has done in his first few seasons in the league.
Just reminding everybody, mister irrelevant last week in the draft,
(18:30):
third string quarterback and in his first two seasons, came in,
took his team to the championship game, got injuries which
is why they lost, then took his team to the
super Bowl the next season. Last year was a wash
with all of the injuries.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
But excuse me, it's what I thought when I looked
at this what I thought that one hundred percent on
Dak because what and then I thought same thing with
Justin Herbert and Baker Mayfield. And I'm not take athy
away from their talent. But at the end of the day,
when you look back on a career, here's your a fan.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Okay, yeah you're a fan.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Let's say you're a fan of the Chargers and you're like, well,
we never want a thing. But that's Justin Herbert's arm talent.
That was elite and that's enough for me. Absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
You can't.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
So you have to have brock Party in this top ten,
whether people like it or not. I'll take maybe gofsel High.
He's been to a Super Bowl. He's I'm willing to give,
but you're right, Stafford should be in here.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
But I take umbrage.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
I'm gonna say that I take umbrage with Dak being
in here over brock Party.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
Yeah no, that's not even like all those guys over
Matthew Stafford. Yep, like a Super Bowl winning quarterback who
again last year showed that he is still an elite quarterback.
They were a play away from going to the NFL
Championship Game over the Super Bowl champs over and then
Patrick Mahomes is still number one.
Speaker 9 (19:48):
Do either of you find it premature to put Jade
and Daniels already. Yeah, ten because you saw this last
like this always happens, right last year, everyone would before
the season, everyone was praising CJ.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Sound and then c J.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
Stroud, this happens.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
It happens.
Speaker 5 (20:02):
Almost every strade went to Ohio State, so that was
to be expected.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
And everyone, I'm just saying, I could have.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Told you how many Michigan people we have in here, right,
I never beat Michigan.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
And then Tracy, Yeah, everybody.
Speaker 9 (20:18):
I have no loyalty on what happens in the Mitten.
And I just happened to know the thought processes.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Thank you, thank you for getting it. It's just it's
just wild.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
And then when you look at like the top ten
highest paid quarterbacks based on like the contract average, top ten, again,
like a lot of this determines like when you got
your contract. But the fact that like Dak is number
one obviously, Joe Burrow number two, deserved yes, tied with
(20:46):
Jordan Leve, Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen deserved TUA at six
seven as Jared Goff tied with Brock Party both deserved nine.
Herbert he's talented, well, see does Lamar Jackson at ten deserve.
(21:07):
Jalen Hurts eleven deserved. Patrick Mahomes isn't even a top
paid quarterback. I mean that has to do with when
he signed his contract, and he did a team friendly
deal when he did it.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
But again, the fact that Dak is.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Number ten on top ten quarterbacks, number one on highest
paid quarterbacks, has nothing to show for it and is
up there above.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
And his new coach said he's in his developmental lids.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
So as the top paid quarterback in the NFL, no
he is. I take umbrage. I take umbrage.
Speaker 5 (21:41):
I I.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Under protest. Do I read this, I'm asking for a friend.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
What's umbradge?
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Umbridge is like I'm mad about it. I don't like it.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Is not the bad guy in the fifth Harry Potter book.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
I didn't read Harry Potter books, which it is.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Yeah, but it means like I think, I'm well, I'm
ninety eight point nine percent sure that it needs like,
I disagree with it.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
I don't like it.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
I'm angry, and I'm angry and I'm upset.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
Okay, on behalf of.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Rock Perty and the entire team. I'm upset about this.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
The word of the day Umbridge.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
Okay, now look it up and tell us about I
got wise and.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
See what's trending.
Speaker 8 (22:22):
As you other in Michigan.
Speaker 10 (22:23):
Alum here, I'm proud to tell you did use the
word umbridge correctly.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
Yeah, that's what's up basically.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
Baseball scores.
Speaker 10 (22:30):
Bottom of the seventh inning, the Rays and the Twins
tied five apiece.
Speaker 8 (22:34):
Middle of the seventh, the Cubs have.
Speaker 10 (22:35):
A four to three lead over the Cardinals. Bottom of
the sixth, the Blue Jays with a three to two
lead over the Angels, Red Sox and Nationals. Boston leading
two to nothing in the top of the second, Red's
Philly scoreless in the bottom of the second, the Braves.
Speaker 8 (22:49):
Put two to one in the first inning.
Speaker 10 (22:51):
Now playing in the top of the second, with the
Orioles to nothing, Brewers Marlin scoreless top of the second,
and the Mets with a four to nothing lead on
the Yankees for the.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
Second inning on FS one.
Speaker 10 (23:02):
Bottom of the second, Royals and Diamondbacks are scoreless. Elsewhere
in Major League Baseball, clark Smith expected to undergo Tommy
John surgery. Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that today clark
Smith got pulled in his third and the third inning
of his last start, Novak Djokovic became the third player
in the history of Wimbledon to reach one hundred victories.
Speaker 8 (23:23):
He's also won seven of his twenty four Grand slams
at Wimbledon.
Speaker 10 (23:27):
In the grass court tournament, Ben Shelton swept his third
round match today. The Knicks head coach Mike Brown, his
contract reportedly.
Speaker 8 (23:34):
Going to be four years and forty million dollars.
Speaker 10 (23:37):
At Hot off the presses, the Houston Rockets are trading
Cam Whitmore to the Wizards for two second round picks.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Woo woo.
Speaker 8 (23:45):
Back to you guys.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Thank you Martin. You're listening to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm
Alex Curry here with Tracy Sandler. We are broadcasting live
from the Fox Sports Radio studios in Los Angeles. Thank
you for spending your Saturday afternoon with us. It is
time for our first guest. He is one of my
favorites in the industry. He was my former TV partner
when we were both on the Angels broadcast.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
He is now part of the Dodgers broadcast.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Please welcome jose Mona.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Jose Hi.
Speaker 11 (24:11):
Yeah, I was actually winning for the applause to die.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Ah there it is Thank you thank you, Thank you, Jose.
I'm so happy we finally got you this week. What
a week at Dodger Stadium minus last night. We can
just kind of forget that last night didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
It happened.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
But this week we all got to witness history with
Clayton Kershaw becoming the twentieth pitcher in the history of
the game to reach three thousand strikeouts. Take us inside
Dodgers Stadium and explain what that environment was like once
he finally threw that final strike.
Speaker 11 (24:51):
Oh, it was. It was like a spectacle. It was
a like a Broadway show. Mesh hollywo. I mean, it
was like the intipation was just beautiful. On top of that,
I mean, there were so many things to talk about
when we talk about Kersher. He grew up here. He
came up as a kid who was a wild I mean,
he was a kid that couldn't throw strikes. I remember
(25:14):
for years, you know, even when I was with the Angels,
I always kept into you know, obviously base was you know,
I was like, Hey, Dad, who's this kid Kersher? They'll
talk about He's like they're like they saying, like he's
the next Sandy Colfax. I'm like what And before you
know it, he's got better numbers than Sandy Colprix. Undoubtedly
to me, the best picture in Dougie's history. We consider
(25:35):
everything that he's done for eighteen years, same uniform, three
thousand punch outs and just the winner. I got think
it goes out there to win. And then in modern
in modern day baseball, by the way, when it comes
to Eras says that I was implemented back in nineteen thirteen,
he's got the best era.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
Ever.
Speaker 11 (25:55):
I mean, it's like one thing, but the environment here
was like anticipation and it was like tension right there,
was like when is it going to happen? And then
it's like, oh my god, he's not gonna get strike out,
like he's going to The White Shirts are swinging the back,
they're making contact.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
I mean, they're like it's not going to be me.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
They're not going to do it against me. You're like
literally throwing the bat at the ball.
Speaker 11 (26:15):
There, and I mean they were smoking on baseball and
I'm like, oh, his stuff doesn't look all that great,
but that needs to happen here at home, because I remember
his previous outing. He was he pitchs in Denver. Yeah,
like sixty nine pitches, you know, throwing sixty nine and
Denver's like throwing eighty nine somewhere else, right, yeah, but man,
and then we go, Okay, he's got to get as
happened here? You know his next is going to be
(26:35):
like at me walk in, like no, I needs happened here,
And before you know it, she comes out in the sixteen.
I was like, oh, really, the crowds like is coming,
but these guys are not striking out? What's going on?
Before you know it, Oh my god, I got to
call that strike er. And I will never forget that
moment because it was like, oh pause, the silence and
then the eruption was it was really it was magical.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
Someone on this broadcast may have cried I don't want
to name names, but that someone is me.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
I might cry out, yeah, thinking about it was so special.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
The craziest part is I have so many friends there
and like obviously they didn't know if he was coming
back out, and I was at home listening to the
broadcast and I've text him. I was like, Okay, confirmed, Roberts,
Like I said, he's going to go back out for
the for the next inning, and what an emotional rollercoaster too,
because the monthly injury happens at that same at bass
so yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
So kick this out.
Speaker 11 (27:26):
So he's at uh liten ninety two pitches after five, right, yeah,
and the monthly injury happens a cost ceiling. Yeah, and
and then coincidentally who comes into the game, kick Hernan.
And as I'm describing this moment, I'm going, well, I
just recently talked to k about this. How many times
(27:47):
has he been a big moment's buying Kershel? I said, well,
this is not coincidence. Let me just say, I'll go
really bad for Max Mounsey, but yeah, she is going
to be part of this moment. I told myself, Yeah,
he's going to be part of this. Kurt is going
to get that strike out, and like this is coincident?
Is no? No, no, this has got incidents, as we say,
but is Kurshel. There's peak of that connection once again,
(28:10):
heath on the mount. He kind comes into the game
because of the injury and the number three thousand halfs.
I'm like, there it is right there. What a beautiful
what a beautiful evening. His last pitch, his last batter,
one hundred pitches, on the mark and his curshel in
style fifty three thousand plus. It was just beautiful and
for him to admire the fans and know it and
act even in my after the game that he doesn't
(28:33):
get too cut up in the moments like the fans
are plotting or things in video boards. But he goes,
I had to. I couldn't. I could not do it.
And then Freddy Freeman and the Sun kept reminding him, hey,
you're you're you're eight away, you're twenty eweven, and I
know what was going on, but we're so happy for him,
and he wants to keep pitching, not just to get
this in three thousand, but he wants to win.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:53):
Well, and Freddy Freeman, you bring that up. He hits
the game winning run.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
It just it was.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
You could not have scripted it better if unless taking
out the monthy injury, you could not have scripted better
as like a true Hollywood ending.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
It was. It was perfection.
Speaker 11 (29:10):
They were losing in that game, yeah, and would have
been the losing picture. Yeah yeah, but I mean a
team that really happened scuffling about the White Sox and
they came in and they put the best effort. You know,
the best thing about that was really if you think about,
you know, and retrospect going the White Sox did not
come here to go, you know what. Let's just they
came here to fight, and they come here to say
(29:31):
it's not going to be us. And I really hit
my hand because Will Venable, their new manager, preferred those guys,
and I think you can see it pretty much in
their actions and then their best like, no, no, it's
not gonna happen here. It's not gonna happen here. But
before you know it, you know, you're you know, you're
facing you're facing Clayton Cursh so it will happen.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Now I have to say Max Munsey escaped a huge
injury scare with the MRI I revealing no structural damage
and just having a bone bruise on his knee. They're
saying about six weeks honestly best case scenario for how
bad it looked. You guys didn't even show the replay yeah,
on the broadcast, so I didn't look it up. But
what's what's the feeling right now around Muncie and the
(30:11):
situation and just I mean, DODG just have had kind
of unfortunate injury situations this year.
Speaker 11 (30:18):
Again, it's sad because he's such a big part of
this whole thing, and I mean, you know it must
is just having a terrific resurgence. It was bad. Yeah,
he went to the glasses, corrective glasses. You got to
just run of his eyes, his vision, and he's been
just a monster. And for all the people that you
(30:39):
know back in April and even when these couple last year,
like just go get somebody else, but I go. He
is part of a culture that has been created here
with Dave Robertson and the top. You know, from the
offense down that even if he has two hundred, he's
still part of something big. And you don't want to
mess with chemistry too much, you know. I think we're
so numbers driven nowadays, like oh long tangles and there's
(31:01):
and percentages and all the kind of you know what,
there's something called culture. You can replicate and you actually
you can't create and say, oh, let me bring this
blend and that blend. No, it doesn't happen. He's such
a big part of this. But hopefully it'll be about
I'm guessing hopefully four weeks because of the bumbers and
you mentioned the structural daminage not being there. But when
I first saw it, I first thought Gavin Letts has
(31:25):
spent training moment because he's yeah. I'm like, oh, please don't.
But we'll see what happens about I don't know that
the team's got rally behind him and over all the Dodgers.
The Dodgers throw about their business. No team again has
had more guys serving on the eye of than the Dodgers,
like last year when they won the World seriess it's
never an excuse, but you feel bad for the guy,
but you're welcome back to open arms when he comes back.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
I have a question. You speak about culture and a
huge part of their culture. Who has become a fan
favorite and who we love of course is to askar Hernandez,
But what's been a little bit concerning of late in
To asker Hernandez, is his defense is in the right field?
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Is it something that Dodgers are concerned about.
Speaker 5 (32:03):
Is it something they're going to have to address because
it has been problematic. Last night was a mess, but
it may not have turned into a mess had Tao
made a play that he really should have played. And
so I just wasn't sure what is going on and
the feeling and the dugout around that.
Speaker 11 (32:18):
Anytime you see something like that happened Taylor or somebody
else a month earlier of the season, pays himself comfortable.
Those things are addressed straightly. I mean they're taking care
of immediately and guys are shown why perhaps things could
have gotten better. But Dave Roberts two days ago op
when he talked about the rightfield position and the defense
out there, and teams know that right. So yeah, taking
(32:39):
the incra base, they're going to be anticipating a ball
not being caught. But joshcar takes a lot of prime
in being a complete player, not just a good hitter.
And I know he's going to play himself to be better.
But there's no doubt in our minds. We know there's
a play in Kansas City that should have been caught
at prolonged the knitting. Same thing would happened last night.
So he knows things need to get better, you know.
And when he asked players like that and any players,
(33:00):
just make the routine play, make the rooting play, make
out the outs. Don't give additional outs of the opposition
because against the Dodgers, trust me. The opposite is in
for anything that they can crack to go out and
score a run. But Tasca, say's a lot of pride.
I'm very sure Diino Evil, who you know very well. Yeah,
love Denning all this time with him in the outfield
to make sure that the jumps, the first steps, the angles,
(33:23):
and also position is which is a big tam with
the Dodgers, I said, when they put him, to make
sure that he has a chance to success out there.
But yeah, pleasy to be made in the big league because
they're constant when they're not made.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Yeah, okay, Jose, before we let you go, let's talk
about tonight. It's shoho tany day. It's his birthday. He's
back on the mound again. I feel like he's still
a little ahead of schedule in terms of his pitching.
But what are you expecting to see from him tonight?
What kind of pitch count is he going to be on?
Do we see him go past two innings?
Speaker 11 (33:53):
I don't see him going past two innings, even though
has the pressed as many times before. Yeah, the players
keep him around the thirty five. Hopefully today he won
twenty seven last time. Twenty word strikes. I mean, twenty
seven is quite low for two winnings, but yeah, hopefully
in the thirty five to forty range he could go
a little bit more. I'm telling you. The thing is
that they're just being extremely careful how it should be
(34:15):
because Showy goes out there and I mean he's also
playing on the field day and I think, Alex you
were there from the beginning of this thing went on.
The management of show hate needs to happen now at
an age of thirty one, much definitely than when he
was twenty six twenty seven years old, because he's always
going to say yes. But the body tells you. I
mean he's got a couple of surgeries, yeah, the shoulder
(34:37):
issue last year, So they're doing the right thing. But
I think this is all prompted by him.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
He runs the show after the All Star break.
Speaker 11 (34:46):
Why don't we use those games. I'm doing Simile Betta
games on the field. Yeah, I'm going to compete and
get better. So yeah, I hopefully if he gets to
the third it'll be a blessing. It'll be great. But
I'll think overall, hopefully, but we'll see on his birthdays again.
One one hundred and two miles an hour. Who's last
time out there?
Speaker 4 (35:03):
I love the show.
Speaker 5 (35:04):
Tony's rehab starts are against the Astros and the patre
Yeah right.
Speaker 11 (35:08):
Now, because it is his birthday, you have to repeat
that for me?
Speaker 3 (35:14):
What's that?
Speaker 11 (35:15):
Okay, see it again, joby otan Jovi, Happy birthday show.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Happy birthday show. That was I I don't want to
budge of that. Thank you so much for joining us.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
We love you. Have an amazing call tonight.
Speaker 11 (35:29):
Michael up to you, to your family, your sisters, to you, Tracon.
Also to a baby. It's uh, it's coaching your suit.
Speaker 4 (35:38):
She's coming.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
We're so excited.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
Thanks guys, Thanks Jose.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
All right, guys, when we come back, it's the dues
and the Notes in Sports. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (35:52):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Welcome back to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Court here
with Tracy Sandler. We are broadcasting from the Fox Sports
Radio studios in Los Angeles. Thank you for spending your
fourth of July Saturday afternoon with us. It is time
for the dues and the don'ts in sports.
Speaker 6 (36:12):
Highlighting the d I love that and putting a spotlight
on the don't.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
The subject brings me no joy.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
That's insane.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
It's time for the dues and the don'ts in sports.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Okay, I'm going to start with the do do try
new things. In the midst of everyone's speculating on Lebron's
welcome home hat, while.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
He was in Cleveland, he was playing.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Golf, and apparently this was also his first time like
officially giving it a try, saying day two of officially
trying this golf thing out. Boy, oh boy, is it
a mind f to say the least. But I think
I enjoy that part of.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
It a lot.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
It's got a long way to go.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
At this sport, and I'll still be some boop. I'm obviously, like,
you know, making it pege here, but hey, it's a
great time out there. But Lebron, welcome golf.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
I love it what it is.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
It was one of our family sports growing up. My
mom grew up playing when women weren't.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Allowed on the course.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Oh it's like because we remember as a bella country
clutch group Memory Hill, she would hide her hair up
in her hat, like wear baggy clothing.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
So it was like, no wow, though, that she was
a woman on the golf course.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
And then my pop pop, her dad used to take
me every Sunday to the driving range starting like five
years old, like that was like our family time. And
again you can have amazing holes and then immediately the
worst of your life. And my mom always compared it
to life of like just enjoy the journey of it,
like you were outside, you are in nature. Have fun,
(37:41):
don't take yourself too seriously. This is golf and that's life.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
That was good life advice and good golf advice. I know,
but I know, so try new things.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
It's fun.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
I have ad We were just talking about play Kersha
on the White Sox and how they didn't want it
to be them.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
They were trying to hit that ball. However.
Speaker 5 (37:58):
Yeah, they tweeted gratulations Clayton Kersha on your three thousand
career strikeout, and I thought that.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
Was did the White Sox.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Oh yeah, they also had a really good broadcast call
on it too. They so do be classic. Yeah, they
pay tribute and I do really love that. Okay, do
lean into fashion. Joe Burrow is actually a fashion icon.
I'm just gonna throw that out there. His mom was
in fashion merchandising when he grew up, which is how
he got into fashion. But in a teaser for Netflix
(38:29):
Quarterback Season two, which is coming out in a few
days here on July eighth, it shows Burrow with a
stylist picking out his game day fits.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
I just I love it so much.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
I like it because it's become such a big part
of game day, all these athletes having their runway moment,
walking in the tunnel, walking to the locker room, and
just like Leaning Burrow, I love it.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
I love that he's a fashion icon because he is
top ten quarterback and fashion icons.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
Go baby, renaissance man.
Speaker 4 (38:59):
Do give your superstar a chance. Juan Soto.
Speaker 5 (39:02):
Everybody was panicking, no fooing, and this man has turned
things around. He is going to be a five time
All Star. He went yesterday three for four with a
home run against the Yankees.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
A double in a single, winning right now.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
And the Yankees have lost five in rows, so this
would be six if they lose.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
So you guys, give give him support, give him support,
and don't panic.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
Don't panic, all right, do get your bag.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
I'm bringing this one back because another athlete got another
big bag.
Speaker 4 (39:31):
This week.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Sga signed the richest annual salary contract in Emma NBA
history this week, four years, two.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Hundred and eighty five million dollars. Concrats to him. Contract breakdown.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
He makes seventy one point twenty five million per year,
five point nine to four million per month, one point
four eight million per week, over eight hundred thousand per game,
over two hundred thousand per day, over eight hundred eight
thousand per hour, one hundred and fifty per minute, three
dollars per second. It is just I mean, if you
(40:04):
want to see a crazy one, look at Christiano Ronaldo's
new contract. It's absolutely mind blowing and getting two hundred
and forty four million per year plus like all these
other insane contracts. We talked about it last week. We're
gonna take a quick break here. When we come back.
We got to witness history this week, and we've an
NFL check in. If you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Welcome to our two of Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex
Curry along with Tracy Sandler. Thank you for spending your
Saturday afternoon with us. Hope everyone is having a fun
and save Fourth of July weekend. Also, I didn't even
say like welcome back from your European adventure. Can I
just give like a little shout out to everybody who
just is going to Europe right now and blasting all
(40:50):
of us with all the incredible content. Please keep it
coming from someone who can't travel right now, and my
favorite thing to do is travel, and especially European summersby.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
All is going to be my European summer.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
So just like brag brag, put it out there, like
if you're doing something really cool, post it.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
Yeah, that's fair, post it please for all of us.
It was really fun. It really was. I think it
was one of the best trips.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
Of my life.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
Tell me the lineup, where did you go.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
With can, Monaco and Paris?
Speaker 3 (41:21):
Were you in Can for?
Speaker 2 (41:22):
Because it was like the big locking Okay, I thought
everyone was in can a few weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
For Is it like the media marketing?
Speaker 5 (41:30):
Yes, conference, because there's the film part and then there's
the next one. Is I think Can lines is like
the media marketing Yeah, or conference.
Speaker 3 (41:37):
Sports beach those love of sports people out there.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
But I was not there for that way on vacation.
Got there like I think two or three days late
after it ended. Okay, so did that went to Laggery
Beach Club, went to Monaco, which is really everything you
think it would be in the best way.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
It's its own country, it is its own right.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
But it's like you have to have like I think,
like ten million dollars in your bank account to even
live there.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
It's it's one of those places where.
Speaker 5 (42:02):
You're like, Okay, one day or one night, is this
is insane?
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Is it is?
Speaker 5 (42:08):
It doesn't feel like a real place, yeah, because it
kind of is not really a real place.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
No, but it was.
Speaker 5 (42:13):
It was a great experience. And then Paris, where I love,
I could move to. I could live in Paris, Tracy
and Paris, let's go bonjour.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
I loved.
Speaker 2 (42:21):
I got to spend again, so I Europe's like one
of my favorite places ever. I'm also like ninety nine
point nine percent European, so like I I like love.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
I am obsessed with Europe.
Speaker 2 (42:33):
And I got to live and I studied abroad in
Italy in college for six months, and I just traveled
to every single country like every weekend. But then I
never really fully got to fall in love with Paris.
I had really bad experiences early on. But then when
the World Cup was in France in Paris, and I
spent six weeks traveling all over France. I absolutely fell
(42:54):
in love with the people and the culture and everything
and then like I get.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
It, Yeah, I get it special.
Speaker 3 (43:00):
It's so special.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
Well, okay, guys, last hour we talked to all things NBA.
New league gear starts tomorrow, trades and signings officially become official.
We talked Lakers, So if you missed any of that,
you can listen to the podcast.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Once we're off the air.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Today we're about to get into some NFL, some baseball.
We have former NBA sar Ryan Hollins joining us in
about thirty minutes, so we'll still dabble in a little NBA,
get his thoughts on everything.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Because the Rockets man whoah many, I have.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
Won the off season already, so we're gonna get into that.
For the best pregame show every weekend, be sure to

down to all the biggest games. Tune into count unpresented
by bet MGM, every Saturday and Sunday morning right here
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. But let's
(43:54):
start with some baseball, because this week, you guys, we
witnessed history. We did Clayton Kershaw join the three thousand
strikeout club. Just a twentieth pitcher in the history of
the game to throw three thousand strikeouts, only the fourth
lefty to do it, and the third player ever to.
Speaker 3 (44:10):
Do it, all with one teams.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Amazing, like the fact that manager Dave Roberts let him
pitch the most that he's thrown since twenty twenty three.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
He threw that final strike on pitch number one hundred.
Dodger Stadium was electric.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
We were just talking to Jose Mota last hour about
it and he said it like it felt like.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
A Broadway show. It was a spectacle.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
And Kurts has been like very open about not usually
getting caught up in the moment, but a moment like
that when you were the twentieth player in the history
of the game to do it is just it's incredible.
Do we have the call? Do we have Yeah, let's
just listen to this call.
Speaker 8 (44:48):
One true pitch, strike.
Speaker 12 (44:50):
Three, crowd foolish, big out, a little Slayer, strike out
number three thousand for Plighton Kershaw this story at Dodger.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
Stadium, Like everything about that moment like just sends like
I get chills. I have chills right now talking about
I had chills when Jose Mota was talking about it
because even even with like all like that was the
most emotional at bat pitching situation because the Munsie injury
happened in that same at bat, I thought it was
(45:23):
a different in my mind, And the next day I
was like, it was just crazy that like the batter
right before, like the Munsi situation happened, and one of
my producers like no Alex, that was the.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
Same at bat.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
I was like, I don't even think I put that
together because so much craziness happened.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
And then Jose was telling us it was almost like fate.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
That not fate, but like trying to find a positive
and a negative situation that Keike Hernandez is who came in,
and Kik has been part of so many of Kershaw's
magical moments and now this was going to be his last.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
I think this was going to be his last batter
Like he.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Was, he was pushing a hundred pitches, the songs were
hitting everything he was putting out.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
They were like I am not.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
Going to be the guy that you reached his milestone.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
They were literally like throwing the back at pitches like
this is not gonna happen. And the fact that it
was like a looking like called strike three, like he said,
like the pitch didn't go where I wanted to go,
but it caught like just the edge of the strike
zone on his one hundredth pitch at Dodger Stadium. Everybody
(46:30):
was there for that moment and the place just went wild.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
It did, it erupted, and it was it was a
really special moment.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
Yeah, amazing, Like and I think it's such a big
deal because I don't know if we're ever gonna see
this again, Like pitchers are not going as deep into
games as they used to back in the day, Like
if you're a starting pitcher, you better go nine innings.
Speaker 5 (46:53):
I don't think we will see it again. It's just
a different The game's different now. Everything about the game
is different. And now if a pitcher goes six solid innings,
it's one heck, great, outing great. I don't know that
we will and the other thing that we will even
if we did see it again, I don't think we
will ever see another person do it all with one team.
Speaker 4 (47:12):
Yeah, that's wild.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
When you look at the next active player behind Kershaw,
it's Chris Sale. He's at twy five hundred and twenty
eight strikeouts. He's thirty six years old, so he needs
another four hundred and seventy two. He's averaging about seven
point five strikeouts per game. Last year he pitched in
twenty nine games, so that puts him around like.
Speaker 3 (47:31):
Two hundred and twenty strikeouts per year.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
He would have to have a few more healthy, strong
seasons to get there. And then Garrett Cole is the
next pitcher behind there at two two hundred and fifty one.
He's thirty four years old, but just had Tommy John
surgery this year, so that's a brutal comeback and a
year plus until you're back to form. Yeah, Like, I
really don't know if we'll see this again.
Speaker 4 (47:55):
I don't think we will. I really don't.
Speaker 5 (47:57):
I think this was That's part of what made it
so special because in some ways it was the end
of an era.
Speaker 2 (48:04):
It was the last like check off his Hall of
Fame legendary career. And again there were so many like
his last two years, Like we didn't know if the
Dodgers were going to bring.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
Him back, and they kept bringing him back, and they.
Speaker 4 (48:17):
Kept like he is.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
He has fought through so much adversity and injuries, and
he is. We were talking to Jose Mota like he
is the greatest pitcher in Dodger history. He will go
down as one of the all time greats, now joining
the obviously the three thousand strikeout club. Like he's checked
everything off his Cy Young's his World Series. Like, I
guess he hasn't had the postseason success, but he's a
(48:40):
big reason the Dodgers got yes to the postseason and
had all of that, those like Insane and l West
winning titles.
Speaker 5 (48:49):
And I think he's had more postseason success than he
gets credit for. It's just that the the fails have
been so epic that I mean to say, for lack
of a better churt, they've been so bad. But I
look at Game five, I believe the twenty twenty World
Series maybe game or yes, maybe game I think it
(49:11):
was Game five of the twenty twenty World Series could
be Game four, so you know, forgive me on that.
But the Dodgers had blown lead to the Rays, and
they had the Rays were celebrating like crazy. I mean,
it was one of those that game before could have
been a disaster. And kurs pitched the next night, and
Kirch Kersh pitch incredibly well, and of course there was
(49:31):
the talk and the thinking of all they're.
Speaker 4 (49:33):
Going to get a Kershaw playoff performance, They're not going
to do it.
Speaker 5 (49:36):
So I think he has had I'm not saying he's
been tremendous, but he's had more success than the playoffs
than he gets credit for.
Speaker 4 (49:43):
It's just that the failures have been so.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
Bad, especially if that's someone remember so good exactly during
the regular season, it's shocking.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
It's jarring.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
It's like how what happened?
Speaker 2 (49:53):
And you start to, like again, try to find excuses
and reasons, and it's like.
Speaker 4 (49:58):
I don't know, oh yeah, and be worn. It could
just be worn.
Speaker 5 (50:03):
And the twenty nineteen Game five of the NLDS, he
comes in to get one batter and relief and that
should have been in.
Speaker 4 (50:09):
He did it, and then.
Speaker 5 (50:10):
They brought him back and he gives I mean that
it was a disaster. So there's some of that too.
So I like to give Kursh a little bit of
a break on that.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
You hope. So okay, but let's move to today because
today is show. Hey, oh Tani day you guys.
Speaker 4 (50:23):
Best say ever.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Happy thirty first birthday to the MVP, the All Star,
the Unicorn. He's also on the mound, making his fourth
start of the season. He's gone one inning in his
first two starts. He went two innings on the road
in Casey last Saturday. Today penning his pitch count, We'll
see how deep he goes Se said, what he's around
(50:45):
like thirty five pitches.
Speaker 3 (50:46):
They'll let him go. But he's still so far ahead
of schedule.
Speaker 2 (50:50):
I thought he was going to be back after the
All Star break to start kind of rehabbing back. But
with all of the pitching injuries, the Dodgers need him healthy.
On the mound, I mean there is light at the
end of the tunnel. Like again, like remember they have
Tyler glassnaw Blake Snell, and Rookie Sasaki that are.
Speaker 3 (51:07):
All out yes at the moment, correct, Yeah, So it's brutal.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
It has been.
Speaker 5 (51:13):
It has been a little brutal. I just I just
want to throw some out there. Do we need to
make today a national holiday? Shoho Tony's birthday? I mean,
just piggyback it on July fourth. I mean, I'm not
saying it's like its own holiday, but you piggybag it.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
I got you, me and my mom in down.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
So doesn't he have a day? Did they make like
May seventeenth? It's yeah, okay, I just feel like it's
you a national holiday. Who's saying no to two days off?
Speaker 3 (51:33):
Yeah? No one. People are taking it anyway?
Speaker 2 (51:36):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (51:37):
Would you say July fifth is probably?
Speaker 8 (51:39):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (51:40):
Question new Year's Day or July fifth the most nationally
hungover day in America?
Speaker 5 (51:46):
Oh that's a really good goal. I actually was going
to say the day after the super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (51:50):
Okay, So we'll put three out there.
Speaker 2 (51:52):
Do we say New Year's Day, day after the super
Bowl or July fifth is the most hungover day in
America and should definitely be a national holiday.
Speaker 3 (52:03):
Out of those three, what would you pick?
Speaker 5 (52:05):
Well, New Year's dag kind of is is the holiday?
So for the most part, okay, you're playing college football
championships and stuff. Yeah, but you're working, but you're But
I I think if you had to give it one
more day, it would be July fifth is afairs, though
there are a lot of people who think the day
after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday. I'm
not saying no to that either.
Speaker 3 (52:23):
No, I'm gonna just give us all three.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
And speaking of that, let's switch gears to the NFL
right now. Obviously not a lot going on because they
are officially like it is summer break right now. Okay,
we are close. We are a few weeks away from
training camps. Two weeks is it two weeks now?
Speaker 8 (52:42):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (52:43):
Oh my gosh. It's crazy because like I feel like
football is year round.
Speaker 2 (52:46):
It is like with all these like like OTAs, mini
camps all that you really only get like three weeks off.
Speaker 5 (52:54):
Yes, And for me the reporters that there's combine, owners meetings,
of course, free agency, the draft. It never ends, it
never ends. This is the break though, this is the time.
There's not a lot going on.
Speaker 2 (53:03):
Yeah, okay, But the Steelers have been making headlines all
off season, finally landing their quarterback for one year, Aaron Rodgers,
because he told the world last week again like his
perfect media timing, that it will probably be his final season. Question,
how much power do you think Rogers will get with
(53:25):
the Steelers?
Speaker 4 (53:26):
Not nearly as much as he had with the Jets.
Speaker 2 (53:28):
I don't think Mike Tomin should give him any power.
He should out inside of making calls on the field.
Speaker 5 (53:33):
I would agree with that, and he may not because
Mike Toalmin is not going to be messing around. And
I think these moves show, I don't know how successful be,
they show that they're not messing around.
Speaker 4 (53:42):
So I don't think it'll be.
Speaker 5 (53:43):
This is not gonna be one of those I want
this guy on my team and I want you know
it's going to be like you're the quarterback, Yes you
can make calls on the field, but I am your coach.
Speaker 4 (53:52):
And you're going to do what we say.
Speaker 2 (53:53):
I really do believe it's interesting because like, what's his
final NFL season going to look like?
Speaker 3 (53:57):
Must watch TV?
Speaker 2 (53:58):
Obviously a little bit of a farewell to but like
Vegas doesn't think it's moving the needle, like.
Speaker 4 (54:02):
It didn't move.
Speaker 2 (54:03):
They're over under win total once they signed him. It's
still like Mike Tomlin hasn't had a losing season in
his coaching career, and before they signed Rogers, I was like, Ah,
this might be it, and like maybe Rogers helps it
not happen. I don't know, but like you hope now
that he's two years removed from the Achilles injury. You're
not gonna get MVP Rogers, but maybe like that final Hurrah,
(54:27):
you'll get a little better Rogers. It's obviously gonna be
better than five and twelve Rogers from last year.
Speaker 4 (54:33):
Absolutely in New York.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
But the Steelers are also making moves to quote win. Now,
I just don't know if they're that big. Like they
just traded with the Dolphins for three time All per
qrnerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end John new Smith sending
All Pro safety Fitzpatrick in a pick swap, but like, again,
(54:57):
like does this make this Steelers any better because both
of their stats are pretty similar. So it's like they're
making all these moves, but I don't know if it's
actually going to do anything, do anything, Like, yeah, they
traded away George Pickens for the third round pick. They
did add DK Metcalf, who I do think is a
(55:18):
better wide receiver, but it would have been nice to
have another weapon and keep him around.
Speaker 3 (55:23):
Like I just don't know. And then obviously the other
big news is TJ. Watt.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
He wants to be the highest paid non quarterback. You
need him us by far your best defender. Yes, he's
thirty one. In order to accommodate that kind of large contract,
it can't be a three year deal as to probably
be like a five year deal minimum.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
You gotta spread the money out. I don't know if
it's a smart.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Business decision for the Steelers and they know that, but
they got they have to do it. Like the Steelers
with and without TJ. Watt since twenty seventeen is insane,
Like they don't win very much without him. Plus like
since entering the league in twenty seventeen, he is first
in sacks. This is linked like breaking in all the
(56:10):
NFL first in sacks. Quarterback, hits pressure like literally everything.
Four time All Pro defensive obviously Player of the Year,
seven time Pro Bowler, Like you, you gotta keep them.
You gotta find a way to keep them, and.
Speaker 5 (56:26):
He wants to stay. But he moves the needle way
more than Aaron Rodgers in my opinion, Yeah, he does.
He's way more than a defensive team. Yeah, the Steelers
win because.
Speaker 4 (56:34):
Of their defense.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
Mike Tomlin is one of the all time greatest defensive coaches.
Speaker 4 (56:38):
If they don't have.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
Their leader on the defense, they're number one defensive player.
There's no way Mike Tomlin's having a winning season. I
think they're going to figure it out. I think they
he wants to be a Steeler.
Speaker 5 (56:52):
The Miles Garrett contracts certainly made it harder because now
he wants He's gonna want more than my Yearrett guy
who I think is getting forty million a year and TJ.
Watt has been making twenty eight million a year. Neither
sounds bad, but.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
It don't make twenty one million this season, so he's
gonna want more, definitely. Like he's entering the final year
of his four year, one hundred and twelve million dollar contract,
he did have a thirty five five million dollars signing
bonus eighty million guaranteed. He set to make twenty one
million this year. He turns thirty one in October. Yeah,
there's a lot, there's a lot. There's a lot, but
(57:23):
they got to make it work. They have to make
it work. This is one of those they have to
make it work.
Speaker 5 (57:27):
And I would also say, even though he's obviously not
going to have that kind of power, I don't think
Aaron Rodgers was going to go to the Steelers.
Speaker 4 (57:33):
They didn't have TJ.
Speaker 5 (57:34):
Watt like he knows the defense is going to be
so important, so it has to be. They'll they're just
going to figure it out. You know, he missed mandatory
mini camp. He missed OTA's Well.
Speaker 3 (57:42):
That's what It's the only thing they can do to
like have leverage.
Speaker 5 (57:45):
Yeah, it's all, and that's all. I don't blame him
for a second. So now we have training camp starting
here in a couple of weeks. They got to get
this figured out.
Speaker 1 (57:53):
Ye.
Speaker 5 (57:53):
And as someone who's covered a number of contract extensions
that have gone related to training camp, may I give
you the advice you figure it out.
Speaker 3 (58:01):
Sooner than later. Yeah, sooner than later.
Speaker 4 (58:03):
All right, guys, we're gonna take a quick break here.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
When we come back, we have a huge rivalry Gold
Cup Final tomorrow USA against Mexico.
Speaker 3 (58:10):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
Welcome back to Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here
with Tracy Sandler, coming to you live from the Fox
Sports Radio studios in Los Angeles. Thank you for spending
your Saturday afternoon with us. Ah, we're having a great time.
It's just flying by. These two hours just absolutely fly by.
And you know what, We've got some fun stuff coming
(58:35):
up tomorrow, like the Gold Cup final, you guys on Fox.
The US men's national team faith in Mexico, which is like,
I guess, hey here probably their biggest rivalry. United States
and Mexico have seen each other plenty of times in
the history of the Gold Cup, meeting eight times in
(58:59):
the finals since the tournament began.
Speaker 4 (59:03):
It gets spicy, Yeah, it gets.
Speaker 3 (59:07):
Very spicy right now.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
But the craziest thing about this entire US men's national
team run is that they're not playing with their star players,
Like which I have?
Speaker 3 (59:20):
I have a bone to pick? Okay, do you take
with those guys? There we go? Thank you.
Speaker 4 (59:25):
Word of the day.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
For a superstar player to decide to not represent your
country in a major tournament that is happening within your
country a year out of the World Cup, which is
also being hosted in your country does not sit right
with me. This is like star players in the NBA,
like like load management, when it's like, what what are
(59:52):
you doing? You are getting paid millions of dollars to
play a game? To play a game is your job?
Speaker 4 (01:00:02):
You show up?
Speaker 5 (01:00:03):
Could you imagine if you today were like, hey, Tracy,
I just you know, I just don't feel like it today, But.
Speaker 4 (01:00:10):
You guys, I'm not some other time. I am nine
months pregnant.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
Yeah, and I'm still working like we are, like, but
I love what I do, right, it is my job.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
I'm gonna go as long as.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
A doctor allows me to go.
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
I've a lot of people been like, yeah, you probably
should have started taking attorney leave last week. I'm like,
I am fine, I am able. I'm gonna go as
long as I can because I like it, like makes
me happy to do what I do. Obviously slowing down
a little bit because doctor's orders, but like I just.
Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
It's just wild to me.
Speaker 4 (01:00:43):
Yeah, it's very strange.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
It's just absolutely And also like there's a lot of
different things like to unpack here. You also have a
new head coach that's like kind of putting together a
new group put Chatina, who like he is a very
well respected European coach is and they're playing right now
(01:01:08):
with B and C level guys, which is I think
what also makes this so impressive that they are fighting,
like these guys are fighting for a spot on this
national team.
Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
They deserve to be here, and they might.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
Be sneakily stealing some starting positions and roles come World
Cup roster put together time, Like I a couple big
standouts obviously. I think goalkeeper Matt Freeze was the hero
in the quarterfinals against Costa Rica save three penalty kicks
(01:01:39):
to help the US men's national team.
Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
Be able to come back and win that one.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
I don't think he'll be the best keeper on the roster,
but he might earn that third spot just to be like, hey,
if we get into pks in the World Cup, I
think we got to have this guy on here because
he's the best at that. And then Diego Luna, who
has just been an absolute superstar.
Speaker 5 (01:02:02):
Yes he is, he's he is really emerged, and yeah,
it's it's been exciting.
Speaker 4 (01:02:06):
The thing that's kind of cool about this team, You've
got these like.
Speaker 5 (01:02:09):
Young guys, hungry, hungry, and they have been played well.
Speaker 4 (01:02:14):
I kind of think there's something about them.
Speaker 5 (01:02:17):
That could be sneakily, you know, being able to beat Mexico.
Now Mexico may have kind of fresher legs, yeah, because
but I don't know, there's something fun and fiery about
this US men's national team.
Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
I'm into it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
It's proven, it's let me prove you wrong, Like you
don't normally get opportunities like this on a national team.
M hmm, especially in big tournaments like this, and these
guys are getting a chance to steal a spot, so
take advantage of that opportunity. Tomorrow USA versus Mexico on
Fox is going to be absolutely insane. Okay, But now
let's check in with Martin Wise and see what's trending.
Speaker 10 (01:02:53):
Bottom of the eighth ennity the Angels blue Jay tie
three apiece bottom of the fifth of Nationals trying to
claw back into this when the Red Sox still lead
to nine to two, though Reds Phillies tied one apiece.
Top of the sixth inning, top of the fifth the
Braves and the Orioles five runs a piece, two to
two of the Brewers and the Marlins, and the top
of the fifth going to the bottom of the fifth.
Speaker 8 (01:03:14):
On FS one, the Mets with a five.
Speaker 10 (01:03:16):
To two lead over the Yankees, and then the Diamondbacks
lead the Royals two to I'm sorry, two to nothing
in the bottom of the fifth.
Speaker 8 (01:03:24):
The earlier today we saw the Twins.
Speaker 10 (01:03:25):
Beat the Rays six to five and the Cardinals beat
the Cubs eight to six. Clark Schmidt, Yankee starting pitcher
expected to undergo Tommy John surgery per Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
Earlier today, Ben Shelton swept his third round Wilblington match.
Today Novak Djokovic, who's won seven of his twenty four
Grand Slam titles. At Wimbledon, he became just the third
(01:03:46):
player to reach one hundred victories at the tournament today.
New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown's contract is four
years and forty million dollars. Reportedly in a couple NBA moves,
the Houston Rockets trading Cam Whitmore to the Wizards for
two seconds round picks, and the Memphis Grizzlies trading center
Jay Huff to the Pacers for a second round pick
and a second round pick swap. Grizzlies also signing free
(01:04:08):
agent center Jack Glendale, formerly of the Phoenix Suns.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
Back to you guys, Thank you Martin. You're listening to
Fox Sports Saturday. I'm Alex Curry here at Tracy Sandler.
We are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios
in Los Angeles, and it is time for our next guest,
ten year NBA vet. He's now on the Houston Rockets broadcast.
You hear him all over Fox Sports airwaves, Ryan Hollands,
thanks for.
Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
Joining us album, Thanks for having me do jog it forth?
Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
Oh do we have them?
Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:04:40):
There we go.
Speaker 3 (01:04:43):
I think you're here.
Speaker 4 (01:04:44):
Yeah, we love it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
Okay, let's get to your Houston Rockets because they are
clearly in win now mode. Winning like making all the
big moves this offseason, trading for Kevin Durant while also
adding Clint Cappella, Dorian Finney Smith.
Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
They just traded for Cam Whitmore.
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
How much better did Houston get with these these moves
over the last month.
Speaker 1 (01:05:09):
What Houston did is they went from a team that was,
you know, getting better and potential to write in the
thick of contending because Houston was topping the league, defensively,
stopping the league, getting hitting the boards. Got the best
coach in the league, ink, And when you get Durant,
(01:05:30):
you solve a lot of those problems. And one of
the biggest problems that they had was have for execution
and scoring and that was really the difference in that
Golden State Series.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
Which is wild because this is going to be Kevin
Durant's fifth team in his career.
Speaker 3 (01:05:47):
He's already really proven.
Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
He's one of the best players to ever play.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
What would this.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
Add to his legacy if he helps bring Houston to
a championship.
Speaker 1 (01:06:00):
And I think, you know, obviously you can look at
Kevin Rands are going to be the greatest scorer to
ever play the game.
Speaker 4 (01:06:05):
Yeah, And I know when.
Speaker 1 (01:06:07):
You hear that, you hear that being said, you think
of Michael Jordan and guys like that. But like he's
seven foot one, he can hit any shot in the book,
and he's arguably just unstoppable. But I do believe, and
I don't like to throw stuff out, this could be
his greatest feat in the sense when he wanted when
he won the championship with the Warriors. He's as certified
(01:06:30):
as they talk. Okay, no matter what they say, he
won the championship, he was the MVP. But if he
gets this here in Houston, all the pieces to the
puzzler are there, and this is a group that you
know needed his scoring. And if he does this, I
think he cemented it certified regardless. But I think all
the oh yeah, but it was Steph Curry, oh yeah,
(01:06:52):
things didn't work out with the nets. I think those
things go away. And that's just to just zip and
erase anything that anybody would have to say about Kevin Durant.
But I couldn't think of a better situation and timing.
And I'm also intrigued to see because the deal's not final,
and I understanding is that there's going to be a
whole lot more shaken down. But at the end of
(01:07:13):
the day, in terms of Houston, I don't think any
thing changes in Houston's Houston standpoint.
Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
Okay, excitement level wise, obviously it's the off season, but
have you been able to talk to anybody within the
organization or players, Like, what was the excitement level when.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
The news broke that he, you know, was coming to Houston.
Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
Man, I mean, just just a city was a buzz.
I mean, I'm nobody and I probably got thirty or
forty text messages.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
You are a somebody.
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
You are a big somebody to us.
Speaker 1 (01:07:47):
I am peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Okay,
but but at the end of the day, like you
could feel the excitement here in town, and you know,
just just everybody went on alert and then Houston like
went back to back and free. You can see it,
like they just re signed every piece to the puzzle
that you could kind of think of got shirt up
(01:08:07):
and obviously you hurt losing Jamen Green, and you hurt
losing Dylan Brooks, and you will shoot. We got Drian
Phinney Smith, you know, we got Flint Compella. This is
a group that needed a shot blocker. That really what
happened was Houston's will so reliant on their on ball
defense and they were great and they've never had an
a racer at the rim, so whenever there's a mistake,
they're so clint it up. Well, Flint Capella is that?
(01:08:28):
So the excitement because all the pieces that all the
needs were addressed and the best way that you could see.
Speaker 5 (01:08:36):
Fit from a chemistry perspective, how do you see Durant
fitting into too?
Speaker 4 (01:08:40):
That locker room?
Speaker 5 (01:08:41):
And I know winning cures all, but just generally kind
of from a chemistry perspective, what do you expect to see?
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
Well, I'm a history major, so the one thing I
always look back on is history. And if you think
of a case that's similar, it's when Paul went to Toronto.
And the one thing Toronto had already is culture. They
knew that they were They had multiple fifty one seasons,
you know, number one team in the Eastern Conference. They
had a group of great guys, they had a coach,
they were a fluid unit, and they said, oh, wh
(01:09:10):
just come in and score the ball. You know, be
the best that you can be. You don't need to
be our leader. You don't need to be anything but
a bucket. It's something that we don't have. And I
see that and similar here with Kevin Durant, where you're
not asking Phoenix needed Kevin Durant to be more of
a playmaker. They needed into fist totals to be up.
There's a high volume of usage. We're here, similar to
Golden State, similar to Wahite Leonard situation. You're just saying,
(01:09:33):
come in and score the basketball. And we got him
in Thompson, we got shing Gun, we got Van Vliet's leadership,
we have all these guys. We got Jabar Smith junior
who's going to learn from you and be a great
piece of the puzzle. So that's the excitement around Durant
and we're less is more in that situation. You're not
asking him to be anything other than himself.
Speaker 3 (01:09:55):
Yeah, I think that's going to be the biggest piece there.
Speaker 2 (01:09:58):
But I want to talk about a couple other teams
making moves this week. The Lakers haven't made a ton
of moves, but they did get a center that they
desperately needed, and DeAndre Ayton reportedly agreeing to a two
year deal.
Speaker 4 (01:10:10):
There have been reports.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
That, you know, he might not have the best attitude,
but how do you see him fitting in with the
Lakers next season?
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
Man? I think it's huge. I don't think Senix was
ever the same since they lost him, And obviously, you
know there are moments where he's been uninterested and you know,
you can question, you know, in his motor or character
or whatever on the court. But yeah, and he's a
phenomenal talent. Was he the number one or number two
picks in the draft? Like damp Eyton is certified. I
think he's going to bring a lot of athleticism and
(01:10:40):
the one thing that Lebron and Luca love is a
good big man and he can run the rim and
he can catch. So I think as long as Luca
and Lebron and and and Jay Gingil's got to bring
him in folks and let him know that he's needed
and kind of reassure him and build his confidence up. Man,
he's really going to pay off. There in LA and
that's a that's a high caliber center you just got
(01:11:03):
for cheap right at the end of the day, So
that should should be exciting news for LA.
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
Okay, So then question here, do you think there's any
truth to the rumors that Lebron could ask for a trade?
Speaker 1 (01:11:18):
I mean, even if you ask for it, how's it
going to happen? I mean it would, and you can
never say never, you know, Yeah, I mean I guess
ideas that TV are thrown out or Cleveland, but Cleveland
would have to piece together so many pieces and the
couple pieces that you may deem untouchable to make that
even happen or match money wise. And then you know,
from the Knicks standpoint, if you kind of give everything
(01:11:40):
for Lebron, he's not a Lebron's best place is to
be in almost like a Durant with the Houston Rockets
roll where he can come in and there's a lot
of pieces already built there, and New York may not
be suitable for that in my opinion. So uh, I'm
setting down. I don't think Lebron is going anywhere, and
I think just what you need to see his ownership
(01:12:01):
kind of stand by him and iron things out and
say he's our guy. We're committed to, you know, serving
him as long as he wants to wear this Lakers uniform.
Speaker 5 (01:12:11):
And with this Lakers new ownership group, do you foresee
that happening as they try to put the piece around them,
because this is a group that wants to win, they
like they like winning championships, and so do you see
them kind of standing by their.
Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Man, I'm honestly intrigued. I think what bodes in Lebron's
favor is that Magic Johnson is integural with the group,
my understanding, and Matt Johnson, the guy who helped recruit
and bring and put his word behind Lebron James, actually
committing and becoming a Laker. So that's that's that's good
there from Levon's standpoint. But ownership is always different. Man.
(01:12:48):
Do you have some owners that are that are fans
of the game, they want to see the best of
owners really know the game basketball. Some owners are are
his hands on, some two hands on, and the owners
know how to get out of the way. And you know,
you could look in Dallas' situation, there was nobody safe.
There's nobody safe when they got and you know, some
of them say, man, I just hate a lot of
money for a team, and what they're used to is
(01:13:11):
is running things like a business. So if this is
a business oriented move, or if this is a basketball
move and there's in all emotions above, you get Earl Lebron.
If this is a business move Lebron, because you get
all the national team games, uh huh, not to Lebron,
but you don't have the longevity of no, yeah, how
long he could play at a high level. And then
(01:13:32):
you're saying what can I get back from? But another
organization that saying, man, he's the point that we trade for.
He ain't don't want to call him?
Speaker 4 (01:13:39):
Yeah, I won't.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
Wild Okay, right before we let you go?
Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
West is so packed.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
Obviously you got the champs, the thunder in the West,
the Rockets making all the moves, Lakers looking better.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
What team do you think is winning the West next year?
Speaker 1 (01:13:58):
For summer? Brought you from my standpointe silently, But you
know what I love when everybody picks somebody else up there.
It's still a group. Even with Kevin Durant, that's gonna
work well with the chippy underdog, you know, that's against
the wall type mentality, you know, and and I'm intrigued
(01:14:19):
to see how this new Rocket team and Phil looks
and calms out and if they're gonna say hey, like
we're the top dogs now and learns that it walks
that walk. So it's gonna be a really good season.
And you've got a group under email that I trust
is being to follow through and be extremely competitive this year.
Speaker 3 (01:14:36):
I love it so much.
Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
Ryan, thank you so much for joining us, especially on
this holiday weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:14:41):
We appreciate you so much.
Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
Anytime, you know, and we'll talk to love it.
Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
Have a great weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
All right, guys, we're gonna take one more break here
when we come back our feel good stories of the week.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:14:57):
Welcome back to Fox Sports Saturday and am Alex Curry.
We with Tracy Sandler. We are broadcasting live from the
Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 3 (01:15:03):
In Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
Thank you so much for spending your fourth of July weekend,
Saturday afternoon with us. If you missed any of the show,
we're going to post the podcast once we're off.
Speaker 3 (01:15:15):
We had a lot of fun today. We talked about
it all.
Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
NBA is the New League years official official tomorrow talked
about all those trades. We had Ryan Hollins on the
show talking about Houston Houston Rockets, who just like have
been absolutely crushing the off season. So we love so
much off history, Baseball, NFL. You got a little bit
of everything. But right now we're wrapping things up with
(01:15:39):
our feel good stories and I'm going to kick it
off with la legend Candice Parker getting her number three
jersey retired by the Sparks in a halftime ceremony this week.
Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
And I am just such a fan of this woman.
I mean, she played.
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
Thirteen seasons with the team, like during her career, won
two MVPs, she was Rookie of the Year. But like
recently more my connection with this woman as she recently
came out talking about having her daughter right after her
rookie season and everything that she did to make it
work as a star athlete and as a mom is
(01:16:20):
so inspiring because let me tell you, there's no playbook
for moms in sports, whether you're playing or you're talking
about sports, it's just it's very different. When everybody talks
to you like, oh, what are you gonna do, You're like,
I don't know, Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:16:31):
Hey, I'm just gonna figure it out.
Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
But she was coming off her rookie year and there
was no paid maternity leave in the w NBA. She
said she had to pay for her mom to travel
with them, buy her plane ticket because they were still
on commercial flights. They were still sharing rooms at the time,
so she had to buy out her roommate and buy
out her room because at that point, like she was like,
(01:16:56):
she was still nursing and she was back on the
court fifty three days after having her daughter.
Speaker 3 (01:17:03):
Oh my god, that is under two months.
Speaker 4 (01:17:06):
That's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (01:17:07):
That is insane.
Speaker 2 (01:17:08):
That that is like talk about being a superhuman like
goddess like creating life and then jumping right back onto
the court like she.
Speaker 3 (01:17:18):
That's a super mama right there.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
So I'm just like all around, all around Candace Parker
like so inspiring and especially for me now, I this is.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
My last radio show before.
Speaker 2 (01:17:32):
I hit maternity leave, and it is just like again,
I love I've talked about this throughout the show, like
I've been told like by so many people, like how
are you still doing this?
Speaker 4 (01:17:43):
I'm like, cause it feels good. I love what I do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
And similar to Candas, it's like when you love what
you do, you want to get back out there as
soon as you can, and so it's just yeah, it's
it's I love hearing these inspiring, badass mama stories of
women in sports again, just like, yes we can do it.
Speaker 5 (01:18:00):
All, yeses we can, Yes we can, Yes we can,
no doubt about that. Well, my feel good story, of course,
involves a dog, and won't just any dog.
Speaker 4 (01:18:10):
Tuger, Yes, Phillies.
Speaker 2 (01:18:13):
I was so happy I had this as a do
and a don't, and I didn't, Okay, say yes, I
love this so much.
Speaker 5 (01:18:19):
So if you guys don't know, Tuger is honoring Tug McGraw,
who spent ten seasons with the Phillies.
Speaker 4 (01:18:26):
Uh huh.
Speaker 5 (01:18:26):
He's a tremendous reliever, and so they are honoring McGrath's
memory because they're making him a service dog in training
and he will be even more than that one day.
He was a marine before his baseball career, and he
will wind up being the service dog of a veteran
with a disability thanks to Team Foster and Warrior Canaan connection.
Speaker 4 (01:18:46):
He is so.
Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Flipping cute, and I like, why don't we have Like,
why don't more sports teams.
Speaker 3 (01:18:53):
We've seen it, like at the Olympics. I think there
was a couple.
Speaker 2 (01:18:55):
Gymnastics teams that had service emotional support.
Speaker 4 (01:18:59):
Dogs, like they should be everywhere.
Speaker 3 (01:19:02):
We're dog lovers.
Speaker 2 (01:19:03):
I have two for babies, have two babies like there
in my life.
Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
It's so funny.
Speaker 2 (01:19:08):
Everyone's like, oh, like you're having a daughter. I'm like, yeah,
she already has two siblings, like she has an older
sister and older brother, like I will what do.
Speaker 3 (01:19:16):
You think about all my children?
Speaker 9 (01:19:17):
What do you think about support rabbits?
Speaker 3 (01:19:20):
I had twelve bunnies growing up.
Speaker 9 (01:19:22):
I remember seeing that giant Welsh rabbit that brought to
the that giant Welsh rabbit they brought to the Giants
game ye the other month.
Speaker 2 (01:19:29):
Yeah, I love all animals, like literally, it's funny, funny
story here.
Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
I got my first pet. We weren't allowed to get
a dog.
Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
I'm the oldest of four, so I was like, okay,
my younger sisters were too young for us to get
a dog at that point. Okay, So I got a bunny,
and I got a female bunny, and then our neighbors
gave us a boy bunny. My mom was like, don't
put them together. I was like, okay, ha put them together.
Twelve bunnies later, we were all the bunny We were
the bunny farm.
Speaker 3 (01:19:55):
And I just I love all animals.
Speaker 2 (01:19:57):
I like, one day we'll have a farm with ten
dogs and everything else, and I just ugh.
Speaker 3 (01:20:03):
But moral of the story, let's get back to the
to the beginning.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
Every team should have an emotional sport dog yep, on
the like on the roster, like the chief of smiles.
Speaker 4 (01:20:14):
Yes, I give my oh, give him the job.
Speaker 2 (01:20:17):
It's gonna be better for everybody. You guys, thank you
so much for tuning in. I'll see you in a
couple months, but don't go anywhere. Steve Hartman and Martin
Wise are coming up next here on Fox Sports Radio.
