mister Bucky Brooks. Hello, Buck, how were you? How was
your Thanksgiving?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Thanksgiving was great and no complaints. It was a good time.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Football was everywhere, so I am happy and excited about it.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Football was, in fact everywhere. And I tell you what,
I hope you had a great one. I hope everybody
else on our staff had a great one as well.
But you know what, A couple of takeaways that happened
over the last forty eight hours, and one of them
involved you in your school, your former school, University of
North Carolina. You know, Matt Brown was fired okay, and
he's a football coach. He's been there twice. They fired him.
I think there was a classic move to fire the man.
(01:02):
The announcement came one day after he said he was
going to return for twenty twenty five as a head coach,
and he lost to James Madison, as you know this year,
seventy to fifty at home. That was a non conference game,
and he had to clarify after that game he was
not resigning, after suggesting he would step aside if the
team's issues could be not fixed. Okay, they finished six
(01:22):
and six this year. They lost to NC State yesterday
thirty five thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
But to me, to.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Fire a man who has done so much and has
accomplished so much at that school is a classless move.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Let him resign. I don't get it.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Mac Brown has tort Your eighty eight career wins, the
eighth most by a head coach in FBS history. This Paterno,
this bout In, this Pop Warner, this Bart, Brian amos, Alonzo, stag,
Nick Saban, Brian Kelly, and your coach, Matt Brown. And
how does that school do that? I say a hex
on North Carolina. I know you're a tar heel in
(01:58):
and out, but what they did to Matt Brown was
ridiculous and classless.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Look, it's tough because I love Coach text coach earlier
this week after all of this stuff went down and
just talked about he had such impact on me and
so many of my teammates' lives in terms of being
a positive role model, in terms of teaching us how
to handle.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Life good and bad in those things.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
And I think what happens is when you're as compassionate
as caring against Coach Brown, you kind of want people
to offer that in return. But at the same time,
we're in such a different space in the college football
landscape where after the James Madison game, when Coach Brown
gives the emotional speech to the team and he talks
(02:47):
about possibly return what he did, he opened the door
for the people that felt like he was too old
to be on the sideline to kind of have their
way and to begin to have the conversation about moving
on to the next coach. And I would have liked
to have seen them like wait till the end of
the season, before any announcement was made, because Coach Brown
(03:09):
after the game, he talked about how difficult it was
for this team to play.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Under these circumstances.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
You had the death of a player early in the year,
then you have the pressure of this is his last game,
you gotta win his last game, and all the pressure
that comes with that, and so the team they feel
like failures because they weren't able to come through and
what should be kind of like a ceremonious ordeal where
you win the game, they kind of lift him up,
(03:37):
take him off, but they couldn't perform. So I just
wish it had been handled in a different way to
lessen the pressure on the players and to also make
sure you give him his proper respect In time, I
think some of the hard feelings that exist between Coach
Brown and the university just because of the way that
the ending happened will subside and he'll be able to
(03:59):
come back, and they probably name Field after him in
those things.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
But yeah, it look for a bitter taste of them
for sure, me too.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Really, the only coach with one hundred plus wins at
multiple multiple FBS schools one hundred and thirteen at your school,
North Carolina one hundred and fifty nine, one hundred fifty eight,
I believe it is a Texas round, the winningest coach
in North Carolina history when one thirteen to seventy eight
and one over sixteen years had two stints. As you
know in North Carolina ranks eighth. As I mentioned old
(04:25):
time FBS. Okay, we move on. At least we're on
the same page here. It hurt me, It discussed me.
I think it's just a bad move. I mean it
makes the school look bad. Now, let's get into the
games yesterday, and one of the big games, obviously was
Ohio State losing to Michigan, and a couple of takeaways
from that game, and one of them was the flag planting,
which I thought was disgusting. It happened in a couple
(04:46):
of other games. But here's the thing that I couldn't
stand another takeaway. It's ridiculous these morons, and they are
morons in the Columbus region that root for the Ahard
State University Buckeyes.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
They want Ryan Theay fired. They want to.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
God that that was the away after the game yesterday.
He was a thirteen to ten game, a tremendous football game,
came down to the wire on the field goal, and
now they won Ryan day fire. Let's talk about Ryan
Day for just as second as I can. He's been
coaching Ohio State for six years, got them to the
playoffs three times. Twice, he took him there when only
fourteens qualified. His teams have won sixty and lost only ten.
(05:20):
All right, the second best winning percentage in Ohio State history.
This year obviously ten and two. They lost to Oregon
thirty two to thirty one. They beat number three Pence State.
They outscored their opposition like three to one, something like
three hundred and eighty points to one fifteen. All right, Okay,
tell me why every postgame analyst on TV, every newspaper guy,
every fantas calling for his head. They say he can't
(05:41):
win the big one.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Really is that? Come on, look at you do your homework.
He's won a lot of big games.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
The Michigan loss obviously in the last minute field goal
thirteen to ten, and the folks at Columbus are crazy.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Woody Hayes the iconic Ohio State coach. Coach twenty eight
years at Ohio State. He lost eleven times to Michigan.
He did win six, TV tied one. Tell me what's
wrong with society today? Do they want Ryan Day fire
tell me, well.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
I mean fan is sure for a fanatic. And when
you have a Rabbit fan base whose entire focus.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
All year is on one game, the Michigan game, it's
hard for them to look past that. But what Ohio
State has to do, and what the ad has to
make sure he does is long term vision, not short term.
He can't worry about the one game to Michigan. When
the look Ryan Day, I think he's gonna have one
loss to a big ten team outside of Michigan.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
That's not a fireball offense.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
Yeah, you want to win the robbery game, you want
to do all those other things. But to me, I
think Ryan Day and Ohio State they may make too
big of an emphasis on the Michigan game and it
creates a pressure on them that they can't withstand.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
They have to find a way to lighten the load.
And remember Jim.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
Harbough started out her to five against Ohio State before
he turned it around, before they were able to start
winning games, and so their ebbs and flows and rivalry games.
Ohio State can't allow the Michigan failures to prompt them
to get rid of a really good coach.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Because my next question.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Would be who's coming in there to pick up the
baton and carry it farther than he's carrying it, Because
right now, I don't know who that hot coach is
that could go in that pressure cooker and surpass what
he's already established at Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
I'm with you, who would want to and more than that,
who would want to see? I ain't going that seat.
That seat's always hot. You know, you could win every
game and just lose to Michigan and your head's on
the line. It's crazy, it really is. I get it.
It's a great game. That called the game, but does
it have to mean that much?
Speaker 5 (07:45):
I just I just don't haven't been to it.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
I can tell you it's bananas, And I never knew.
I thought I knew rivalries.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
I've been to Carolina Duke basketball games and those things,
But that game is bananas. And there's a lot of
like legitimate hatred between the two fan bases, between the
two schools and those things, and so you have to
manage all of those emotions and all of that.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
So I do.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Understand the magnitude of the game, but I do not
believe that they should fire him because he hasn't been
able to get it done against Michigan when he's gotten
it done against so many other teams.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
I would be shocked if he got fired. I would
be totally shocked.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
But you know, maybe not totally shocked, but so much
shocked because there's a possibility he might really I mean,
in this day and age, with the lums and the
money and the money given to this program or any program, really,
you know, they'll say we're gonna stop opening up all
watlets if he's still there.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
And that's the pressure he's under, right.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah, I mean he is under significant pressure. It is.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
I mean, it's a different deal, man, It's a different
deal to kind of see like what the demands are.
But that's big time football. I mean, just think about this.
You have people that have man at James Franklin because
he hasn't been able to knock off top five teams,
and my common sense are be like, I mean the
top five teams, they're really really good. Like it's hard
to beat those teams that are in the top five.
(09:05):
It's not like they just pass out those things. But yeah,
so the college football landscape is different, the pressure on
the coaches to win these games, but it changes because
when you start taking money for fans and passing it
on the players, everybody feels like they have a bigger.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Stake in the program success.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
And that's what we've created because college sports are now
pro sports. So some of this is I mean a
part of it. And when you're Ryan Day and you're
soliciting money for a collective to pay for the best
players that you can get and everyone says you have
the best roster and ball, some of this is a
result of that too. Guys are paying a lot of money.
(09:49):
They want to see success, and when they don't have success,
they have a bigger opinion.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
It's amazing, it really is.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
So iiO State's loss kind of opened the door for
Penn State. Penn States could have played its first big
tenshi Chhip games is twenty sixteen. They rolled over Maryland
yesterday forty four to seven. So now maybe a little
more pressure is taken away from James Franklin and the
nity lions of Penn State right now. So we'll see
they're going to play Oregon.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
That's a big time deal.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
I don't know if Penn State could beat Oregon, but
they're there and they have a shot out to win
the Big Ten and they're in the first round by
and really and truly no one expected that out of
Penn State this year. So you know, again, they get
a break from Ohio State, so a little pressure taken
off perhaps James Franklin and Penn State.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
A little bit, but you know when it comes back,
it comes back when they have to play in the
championship game because the expectations that they're going to win
the championship games. That's something that's I mean, that's a
lot on them. But look, man, Penn State is well
equipped to be Oregon. Oregon has kind of been up
and down a little bit when it comes to the
way they've had to perform in big games. They've chalked
(10:53):
up wins, but as an undefeated team, all that pressure
goes to the Ducks having to get it done. So
it'll be interest to see what they how they performed
when all the pressures on them and the expectations kind
of farded them to win games.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Okay, let me run this by you. Now, Auburn lost
to Alabama twenty eight fourteen, so Alabama still has three losses.
Does Alabama go to the tournament right now? Do they
make the final twelve with three losses because you know,
we talked about this last week because Indiana and you
said Indiana had to win big, and they won big
est day, they would be produced sixty six zip. And
(11:26):
it was worse than that, it really was, but that
was the score, sixty six to nothing. But I'm looking
right now and you bring up some great points from
last week, and I'm thinking about it, and all I
do was thinking about Bucket Brooks in my head all
bik long. The Alabama beat Georgia at South Carolina LSU.
That brings up their resume pretty much. So they did
lose to Oklahoma, that kind of hurt them. They lost
(11:46):
to Vanderbilt, that hurt them again, but then again hooted
Indiana beat and that's the thing. So Alabama's got a
shot with three losses, I think. I mean, I'd love
to be a little fly on the wall in that
committee room when they make these decisions.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
Yeah, those last couple of teams are gonna be tough.
Speaker 5 (12:06):
You know, when you think about Alabama hanging on the line,
Boise State will be on that line.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
The thing about.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
Man, the thing about Alabama is the brand name and
the tradition that comes with it clouds your judgment on
this year's team.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
They're good enough to be anybody.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
And I would say this, this is what the beauty
of the tournament is.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
They expanded playoffs. Any team can win this thing.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
We're seeing the college football landscape. We just saw all
the upsets and stuff that happened over the weekend. Anybody
can win it. Like I think Alabama has a good shot,
but I don't know how many SEC teams can can
get into the mix. I mean, how many were taken, three, four?
Speaker 4 (12:49):
How many SEC teams get in?
Speaker 5 (12:51):
But I would say, as a betting man, I think
Alabama's gonna sneak in the back door and be the
twelve team.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
I'm with you, I'm with you right there. I mean,
what about South Carolina? Where do they come from? They
came out of nowhere. I mean, really and truly they
had rallied. They knock Clemson out. I mean the seventeen
fourteen is Clemson's gone. And I don't think South Carolina
has a chance. But they came out of nowhere. I mean,
they started the season miserably and they came back and
they got a pretty good year. They really did.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
Yeah, you know, that's that's it's really fascinating to kind
of see how, you know, South Carolina has improved and
how they've been able to kind of get it done
and the things that they have done under Shane Beemer.
Shane Biemer has done a really good job of building
this team up.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
Man.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
They have gone toe to toe with the heavyweights in
that league. They have shown a toughness and a grit
and the physicality about them. Young quarterback Summers is interesting
because he makes big plays inside and outside the pocket.
And they're a good team and we saw them knock
off Clemson and the way that they knocked off Clemson,
it just kind of shows you the depth of the conference.
(13:52):
And I know all the people hate people that appear
to be SEC homers, but there's no denying that that
conference is a little different and some of the other
conferences when it comes down to the heavyweight fights.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Did they see every week?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
You know, you talk about a team that came out
of nowhere, it's about Arizona State. They would pick the
finish last in the preseason Big twelve Media poll. Arizona
State right now, it's amazing with what they've done and
that coach Dillingham. I know he's a bit of a screwball.
I mean on the sidelines at least I meant, I
mean on the sund he just can't control his emotions.
And that's okay. But I guess that that falls on
(14:26):
the on the players. I look at this guy, and
he's an emotional guy like Dan Campbell. Maybe that's why
they're playing the way they are. I don't know, but
Arizona States come out of nowhere.
Speaker 5 (14:35):
Look give him credit because last year, I think when
they're two and nine they had a very disappointed record,
they bounced back.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
He got them going. They found well.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
They were from three and nine this year last year,
I think it was to ten and two this.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Year, and they got after it. And they have a
unique brand of ball that works with them. And one
of the things that everyone has always said about Arizona
State how they kind of a bit of a sleeping
giant when comes to what they're able to do and
how they're able to get it done when they had
the right players in place. And you've heard dilling him
(15:07):
speak up to the collective, hey man, we got some
really good players, but they need to be paid. Because
he wants to continue the stuff. Just an interesting time, man.
But yeah, Arizona State is good. They're gonna play i
Alway State to another team that I've always loved and
respected what Matt Campbell has been able to do in
terms of taking an underman team, a team that is
always viewed as underdogs based on what they have to
(15:28):
recruit or how they recruit to do it. And so
in the championship game you get the chance to see
two programs on the rise battle off with two I
would say, really good young coaches.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yeah, and I'd love to see Iowa Stay through well
because he did well the coach Iowa was say he
did well when he was a Toledo And I wasn't
shocked when the Iowas stay clicked them off Toledo's staff
to go to Iowa State because I thought he did
a whale of a job winning the Toledo's It's pretty tough,
it really is. I mean getting a kid to go
(16:01):
with it, especially in this day and age, you know,
it's nil And I don't know if schools like that
in the MAC Conference Mid American Conference have that kind
of alum base and money base to pay players to
play in the Mid American Conference.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
That's the problem.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Yeah, Now, I mean like that, that's the thing, and
you're going to see people pluck. You've seen people pluck
those top players from those conferences. But we all know
the Mid American the MAC has always had goodball. That's
what they call it MAC action. You know, we interceed
it in the middle of the week oftentimes on ESPN.
We receive those great games and those great players come
from that. It's a testament to Matt Campbell what he's done.
(16:39):
But just man, just the way that college football has come.
The playing field has been leveled, the money has done
that a lot. But it's just a very interesting time
right now when it comes to college football.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
I want to push the calendar back a little bit
a couple of days because we'd be remiss if we
didn't talk about Colorado, our favorite school right now and
boy today, give it to Oklahoma State. I mean I
think Oklahoma State.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
I mean Olie Gordon was my guy for the Heisman
Trophy all right back in August. I mean, I didn't
even know what you can't find the guy with a
search warrant. I don't know what happened to DOLLI really,
but they lost fifty two nothing Oklahoma State to Colorado.
And in that game, Shaduah Sanders said of Colorado single
season passing record, this was on Friday. He passed Koy
Deptma's twenty eight year old mark.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
He came in.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
He needed like forty yards to pass Deptman's record of
thirty five twenty seven yards.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
He got there and he won the record.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
What about Travis Hunter and I love I love what
coach Sanders said after the game said he won the
Heisman Trophy. I love that, I mean, and he probably did.
I mean a couple of deceptions, right, A couple of
receptions touched us playing both ways. Just the fact that
he plays both ways and the way he plays, He's
got to win the Heisman Trophy.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
He has to win him.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
You know what's so crazy is he can win the
Heisman Trophy and not even be a final list for
the Jim Thorpe Award, which is ridiculous. John the voters,
the voters look ridiculous for not putting him in there.
He's obviously one of the best defensive backs and ball.
No disrespect to whoever wins it, but Travis Hunter not
being invited as a finalist. To me, it look it
takes away some of the luster of the award, But yes,
(18:14):
he is absolutely what a Heisman Trophy winner should look like.
Dominant player, dominates all the time, over one thousand receiving yards.
We've seen him make big playoff the big play on defense.
He's the best player in college football.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
When does he play in the pros?
Speaker 5 (18:27):
I think it does a little bit of both. To me,
I believe I would prefer to play him on defense
and let him be a number three or number four
receiver on offense.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
I think it's.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
Harder to find super athletic dbs with his size and length.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
I would utilize him more.
Speaker 5 (18:47):
As a dB and then bring him in in situations
on offense to play and perform. It's just much easier
to put him as a as a third receiver. I mean,
you could do it both ways, as a third receiver
or a third corner. Either way, I think there's a
role for him to start on one side and be
a key substitute on the other side.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
And one thing I remember you told me. I mean
sometimes these dbs they could cover players, but they don't
have good hands. But this guy's got hands because he
catch the football, and that reminded me of the Notre
Dame game yesterday when they were two pick six's right at.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
The end of the ball game.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
And Notre Dame this team really after losing to Northern Illinois.
There was some pressure on the coaching staff there and
Notre Dame and then they really love ten straight wins.
I mean, I mean, don't count them out. Notre Dame
has a shot I think to go to the finals.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Don't you think.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Go to the final game?
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (19:37):
I just worry about like ultimately, for Notre Dame, it
always comes down to this, right, It always comes down
to are they going to be fast enough to take
on the fastest teams that are left in the tournament.
When Notre Dame matches up with the Georgia, do they
have enough speed and athleticism to match up with them?
That's the trick. They're a really good team, They're world coached.
I love the edge that Marcus Freeman has given his team.
(20:00):
I just don't know from an athletic standpoint, do they
have enough explosive players to deal with the top teams.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Well, I will say this, I don't think Marcus Freeman
gets enough credit. Not only a Notre Dame. But I
know when he was coaching at the University of Cincinnati
as an assistant coach, everybody gave the credit to Luke Fickel,
and Luke Figkel hasn't done anything in Wisconsin the last
two years, and obviously when Marcus Freeman left, that's when
the Cincinnati program kind of hit rock bottom. And I
understand transferring from the American Conference to the Big Ten
(20:31):
Big twelve, I mean Big twelve is a big difference,
a major difference, but still in all the competition and
the type of player that has gone to Cincinnati and
the way they play is a lot different since Marcus
Freeman has left.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
I can see that.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
Yeah, Luke Fickle certainly misses him, not only in terms
of what he was able to do defensively as his
defensive coordinator. I'm sure the impact that he had on
the kids there, maybe the calming influence or maybe the
fire that he might have brought as an assistant coach,
they missed that. I'll say for Filical, going from Cincinnati Wisconsin,
to me, the biggest thing where he has messed up.
He has changed the brand or attempted to change the
(21:07):
brand of football that made Wisconsin successful. Wisconsin is an
old school, blue collar, hard hat, lunch pill team, and
they become a team that wanted to throw it all
over the yard using airy concepts in those things. That's
not Wisconsin football. And so he has to get back
to that. But yeah, like Marcus Freeman, I will say
(21:28):
is underrated.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
And the job that he's.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Done, which is a tough job, the job that he's
done replacing Brian Kelly Man, he deserves a lot of
credit for it, no.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Doubt about that. All right, let's move on right now,
because he is Bucky Brooks.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
I'm Andy Furman.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
You get Bucky on Twitter at Bucky Brooks, Me at

Count Out the Kickoff presented by bet MGM. We're right
here on Fox Sports Radio and of course the iHeartRadio app. Now,
let's get into this to little NFL games. Let's go
back to Friday now and kind of a strange ending
in the National Football League. I'm talking about that Kansas
City game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Bucket about fifteen
(23:07):
seconds left the game with the fourth quarter, the Raiders
spiked the ball on second down in the Chiefs thirty
two yard line. The next play, the center of the
Raiders snapped the ball before their quarterback ad and O'Connell
was ready for it, and the ball hit the ground
and the Chiefs recovered it. Okay, And after that ball
was recovered, it seemed like the play had been blown
(23:28):
dead and there was like a full start penalty, but
after the officials got together, the penalty was instead changed
to an illegal shift. The Chiefs declined, they kept the ball,
they kneeled on it, the game was over. Nineteen seventeen,
Chiefs win again. They just escaped it once again. But
what was the deal with that that ending? I never
(23:48):
saw anything like that, and I'm sure it was a
ridiculous play because I don't know why aid and o'donald
was ready for the ball and the ball hit the ground?
Speaker 2 (23:56):
What was going on?
Speaker 4 (23:58):
Okay?
Speaker 5 (23:59):
A few different things one on one. You have to
say it like to give it context. Kansas City is
a very difficult place to play. It's loud, just the
way the stadium is constructed. Man, I mean, you can't
hear yourself, think unit situation, fifteen seconds left, Like they
clocked the ball, they're trying to get the play organized,
(24:19):
trying to get everyone lined up, and what happened. They
get up the huddle late, so Aid and O'Connell is clapping,
exhorting his team to get ready. But what happens is
so many teams have gone to the silent coump where
they're using the clap to initiate the play, that the
right guard gets confused.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
He taps the center.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
The center snaps the ball while Aid O'Connell is not
looking because in his mind he's trying to get everyone
ready and he just didn't think that his clap initiated
the snap. It's unfortunate. It's unfortunate for the Raiders that
it plays out like that. But yeah, the mechanics of
orchestrating a two minute drill something things. You still can't
(25:00):
account for it because the Durro was flawless up until
that point, particularly coming off the heels of the way.
The Chicago Bears fumbled it, the Raiders ran it right,
but at the end, like a simple miscommunication caused him
to lose the ball on an Aaron snap and to
the Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (25:18):
Credit is one of the reasons why you're here.
Speaker 5 (25:20):
Defensive coaches always exhort their players pick up any ball
the histor ground because.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
You just don't know.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
Nick Bolden picking up that ball gave the Chiefs an
option to take the recovery as opposed.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
To just selling for the penalty. So it was heads
up played by them.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
All right, I'm glad your brother the Chicago Bears, and
which is Thanksgiving night? Thursday night, time ran out for
the Bears. They lost twenty three to twenty to the
Detroit Lions. The coach not Eba Fleus, He's gone right now.
He did not call a time out with thirty two
seconds remaining the Bears facing third and twenty six at
the Lions forty one after he was sacked the rookie
quarter about Caleb Williams. He tried to rush his teammates
(25:59):
to the line of script, but it got really slowed
down and I couldn't get the playoff. A long pass
attempt to dunsa a lot of time thrown out. Carol
Santos had a shot to tie it with a fifty
eighth field goal.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
It didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Let's take a listen to the former coach of the
Chicago Bears, Matt eba Flus, what happened after the game
on Thursday, I want to hear this.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
I like what we did there.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
Again, once it's under seven, you know you're gonna you're
gonna call you know, time out there or actually under twelve,
and then really you don't have an option, you know,
because it's third and fourth.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
You got to throw it into the end zone.
Speaker 6 (26:33):
Then, So to me, it's uh, I think we handled
it the right way, and I do believe that just
rewreck the play, get it in bounce and call time out,
and that's why we held it and didn't work out
the way we wanted it to.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
You know, Bucky, if he would have, if he would
have just owned that and said, look, it was on me,
I screwed up, I think he'd still be coaching the Bears.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
The fact that he said we did it the right way.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
Bye bye, Gonzo, get your bags out, clean out the
lock of your gone. It is the most ridiculous thing
I ever heard of. It only had to do it
to say, look, I screwed up.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
It's on me. It happens, okay. I think he would
have saved this job.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
But I think it goes back farther than that.
Speaker 5 (27:09):
It's not just this moment, it's the moment with the
hail mary. So going back to when they played the
Commanders and they lost the play before they gave up
the touchdown on the hill mary, he plays off covers
they completed like a thirteen yard pass to bring them closer,
so they're arranged to throw the hail mary into the
end zone. When he was asked about that, he was
asked about not only why did you just play so
(27:32):
soft on that play, but why didn't you call the
time out when it appeared that everyone was unorganized. He
doubled down and said, oh, we got it, We have it,
this and that. Okay, So that's one thing that you
kind of put in the pocket. Like man, they seemed unorganized,
but even then he didn't call the time out.
Speaker 4 (27:46):
Why not call the.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
Time out, coach, and get them organized and together and
just you know, clearly understand exactly what you want, particularly
when you got a player on the other side of
the field looking in the stand blowing kisses. All right,
so you put that you give them a break on that. Well,
now when you come and you do this on Thanksgiving,
Because here's the thing about it, Andy, everyone has eyes
(28:07):
on that game. It is right when everyone is eating, right,
because you need to eat between the first and the
second game.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
So everyone's at the dinner table.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Everyone sees what's going on, and there's not My daughter
is looking at it like, what is going on?
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Why doesn't he call the time out?
Speaker 5 (28:22):
Because they look confused, the clock is running and all
of that. And so when you go through that and
then you double down and you say, you know what,
I think we handled it the right way.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
No one in the right.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
Mind can continue to have confidence in the coach if
the coach can't acknowledge, man, I just should have called
to come out. We were unorganized and got a rookie
quarterback who obviously doesn't understand the urgency of the moment.
He throws it away because some of it should also
fall to Kayler Williams knowing what's time?
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Score? What do we need?
Speaker 5 (28:52):
We don't need a touchdown? Why are you throwing it
down the field? We just need a field goal? Any
of those things. But yeah, Matt Ebranfleu's not only lost fans,
he lost his players. Because the players are looking around
because you have so many vets. They're looking around and wondering,
what are you doing. We've been in this situation before
with you or other coaches, and we've seen other coaches
(29:12):
execute at a high level.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
This signal is a level of incompetence.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
And it's hard for me to say that, like to
a coach like man, that's incompetence.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
But he's failed in multiple situations doing that.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
So yeah, he look, it was gonna be hard for
him to continue to go back into the locker room.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
I think it would be hard for him to get
hooked onto another team as a coach, don't you think.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (29:34):
No, I don't think so, because, like, it's different being
a head coach as opposed to being a coordinator. Right,
So when you're the head coach, so many things fall
on your shoulders.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Right. You have to manage the game.
Speaker 5 (29:43):
You have to tie all three phases together, the offense, defense,
special teams. You got to orchestrate how the game is
going to be played. You got to no time score situation.
What I want to do here, take all of that
obscure rules that you can use to your advantage, like
we've seen the Patriots do in the pass by.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Rabel did it when he was with the Titan.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
So you have to have a lot of stuff and
normally if you're going to delegate that stuff.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
So normally in the situation, Andy, there's someone on your.
Speaker 5 (30:08):
Staff who's responsible for what we call clock management. He'll
signal to the coach, a coach, we need to burn
a time out here, like hey, coach, he's in the headset, like, hey,
after this play, we won't call our time out.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
Okay, cool.
Speaker 5 (30:23):
When I was in Carolina, Jim Skipper was the clock
management guy to John Fox. So Fox he's the head coach,
but Skipper would be the one a Fox, we needed
you to just time out right now, and he's all
right and do it. So if he doesn't have that,
if he hasn't delegated that, if he's taking it all
on himself, yeah, that's that's on him.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
He can't he can't do that. Like that's just poor organization.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
I hear you.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
All right.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
It was ugly, It was ridiculous. You don't expect that
in the National Football League. But we move on. You know,
one of the games that really and truly gave you
a chance to kind of maybe take a little bit
of an app when you see the Giants playing the Cowboys.
That was a game like really and truly, as my
buddy Mike North was saying, it was that it was
my backyard. I closed the drapes. Really the Cowboys be
Cowboys beat the Giants twenty three to twenty. Rick Daddell
(31:09):
he rushed for like what one hundred and twelve yards
in a touchdown. But the Giants quarterback now is Drew Lock?
Is he the quarterback of the future. Drew Locke was
twenty one for thirty two for one to seven eight
and an I int But is Drew Lock gonna be
the next Giant quarterback? I don't know, what do you think.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
No, he's like to be the quarterback in the future.
They're gonna have to draft one. And I loved you Lock.
I've known him since he was a high schooler. No,
if they thought he was gonna be the quarterback in
the future, the ball would have been handed to him
insteady Tommy Cutler's when they decided to move on from
Daniel Jones. He'd be a backup player. And the Giants
will go into the draft and kind of figure out
(31:46):
who they can find as their franchise quarterback. But they
have to make decisions, right like the reality evidence, they
have to make decisions on whether Brian Dave Wall is
coming back. There's a conversation about Joe Shane the general manager,
will he come back and all.
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Those other things.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
So those conversations will ultimately determine who becomes the quarterback.
But yeah, and at a time when the quarterback class
it's coming up, it's not the greatest. The Giants are
having to go to the grocery store when you're hungry,
and you know you can't go to the grocery store
when you hunt. You made bad decisions to the grocery store, right,
you end up with like six packs of Oreos when.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
You really don't like oreos.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
I love Oreos.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
Wow, But that's what that's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
So it's gonna be a tough off season for the
New York Giants and it's look, man, it only is
uh feel further by the the Saquon Barkley planning at
the MVP level, that would be the worst thing to
happen if he gets named league MVP.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
It's gonna drive the Marris crazy.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Oh yeah, Oh, he changes all right, you know, don't
look now, but it come. The green Bay Packers really
thirty two seventeen over the Dolphins on Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
But here's the thing that kind of got me.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
I mean, one of the Dolphins players believe that the
cold weather dictates of.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
The performance that is weak.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
I mean, you got you gotta go out there and
face the elements, you really do. Linebacker Jordan Brooks. He
said he thought the mid twenty three temperature in green
Bay played the role. Come on, really, you're a pro bucket,
you played the You gotta expect that, you know. I
talked to Bill Belichick one time. I said, how do
you prepare for these really cold, cold games with snow?
(33:22):
He says, Sometimes we will practice indoors, but you know what,
we'll leave the doors open. So the win of them, then.
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Yes, you gotta you have to make them uncomfortable. Yeah,
for players, you gotta get them use to those things.
The problem when you're like in Miami, you can't simulate
those conditions.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
There's nothing you can do to simulate it.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Man.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
You can put the air.
Speaker 5 (33:41):
Condition on and all that, you still can't simulate that
part of it. The other thing that you can't simulate
is the conditions for two attacking by low all Right,
So not only is it cold, but I don't know
if you play golf, but when you play golf and
hot weather versus cold, where the hot weather the ball
flies far, they probably gives you ten more yards on
(34:02):
your drives. When you're playing in warm weather. When it's cold,
the ball flies shorter, so you got to you gotta
change and so you probably take ten yards off. Well
for a quarterback, those things can happen if you don't
have what we call like superior arm talent. For two
of tung about lowerd who is a rhythm passer who
I would say has averaged is slightly above average arm strength. Man,
(34:24):
the cold weather really impacts him. If you notice when
you look at the Miami Dolphins games in cold weather,
they don't throw the ball outside the numbers, they don't
push the ball down the field. So the cold weather
forces them to play in a little box. And so
that is also a big part of the issue that
they have when they play in these cold games.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Love to hear this.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Every time I hear you talk, I learned something I
really do. He's Bucky Brooks, I'm Andy Firman. We are
Fox Football Sunday and Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
It is time for the answer man. Who's that? That's
mister Football as Bucky. It is next to Fox Sports
Radio Radio.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
It's Buckey coming right up. But it's about eleven minutes
now before the top of the hour. He's Bucky Brooks.
I'm Andy Furman, and we are Fox Sports Sunday on
Fox Football Sunday on Fox Sports.
Speaker 4 (35:09):
Who.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
I didn't want to lie from the tire Rock dot
Com studios, but let's go ask Bucky right now. Let's
do it. Okay, the Heisman Trophy, Bucky Brooks, that award
is right around the corner. Tell us, mister Brooks, is
it for the best player in college football or the
most valuable player to his team?
Speaker 2 (35:25):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
It really is for the best quarterback on the best
team in the country. It should be the best player
in college football. And it did that, then it should
go to Travis Hunter because he's the best player in
college football.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
And I was going to ask the next question, this
year's award goes to and I agree with you should
be Travis Hunter.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
I gotta believe that.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Yeah, he should win it. He's the best player we.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Got Okay, now here's a choice question for you. You're
a general manager of a team. You're making a pick.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Sakwon Barkley or Derrick Henry.
Speaker 5 (35:57):
Sakuon Barkley because he can do more. He can impact
the game, not only as a runner, but as a receiver.
I love Derrick Henry as an old school plugger, someone
that can get it done as a rushing champion. But
Saikwon Barkley is the best running back in terms of
what you want to do in today's game.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
You know, I'm kind of surprised because he came off
of fairly serious injuries several years ago. If they got
out of Penn State, and he's coming back now with
no signs of that whatsoever, you know, and no one
even talks about that.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
He had a bad knee injury.
Speaker 5 (36:27):
Yeah, he had a bad knee injury. He bounce back,
He's fully back. He makes big plays. He's a look man,
He's an interceptional talent.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
He really is all right. Next Justin Herbert or Joe Burrow.
Speaker 5 (36:39):
Mm Justin Herbert just because of the size, I think
you get similar traits in terms of.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
Both of them.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
Both of them are good rhythm passes that can make
all the plays. But I'm gonna just go with the bigger,
stronger prospect than to me, that's Justin Herbert.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
All right, JK. Dobbins or Joe Mixon.
Speaker 5 (37:00):
Mixon, Joe Mixon and me, I think has always been underrated, undervalued.
He is someone who likes say Kwon Barkley. He can
do it in a few different ways as a run
and receiver. I would go at Joe Mixing in that scenario.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Okay, Last, but not least, Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chase.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
That's a good one, one A one B. Give me
Justin Jefferson for skill over sheer will.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
When I think about Justin Jefferson, pure route runner, outstanding
in terms of like the craft. To me, Jamar Chase
overwhelms people with a superior physicality.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
His athleticism in those things.
Speaker 5 (37:38):
I think in a pinch, skill wins out because a
skilled player can somehow win matchups even when his athleticism
is beginning to Wayne, there you go.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Okay, let's talk now.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
NFL halftime shows from Thanksgiving night to Thanksgiving Day.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Okay, I'm gonna ask you a call.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
The Green Bay Packers played the Miami Dollar and Lindsay
Sterling was the halftime guess, but NBC cut it short.
There was a lot of feedback and pushback on social
media after that game because I wanted to see the
entire halftime show. Instead, they showed a beautiful story at halftime,
which really could have been shown on the pregame show
about a player. But Lindsay Sterling, are your thoughts about
(38:19):
that at halftime?
Speaker 4 (38:20):
It's fine.
Speaker 5 (38:21):
They should never cut it short, but I mean, you
got to understand in the NFL, you got to get
a lot done in ten minutes.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
That's what performers, so they only can give you a snippet.
She was fine.
Speaker 5 (38:30):
I was more impressed with Shaboozy from Detroit, but you know,
it's fine the halftime shows at a halftime shows.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Okay, I'm going to Giants Cowboys game. Jelly Rowland, Laney Wilson.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
Yeah, it was okay.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
I mean it was very very We had we had
a little bit of a country theme going over Turkey Day.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
But it was fine, all right, And obviously Lions rolled awesome.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Weight was aw he did. Yeah, he's awesome.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Way Lion's bear Shaboozi Shaboozy, that was big a Lion.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Yeah, Shaboozy, that was a big one. Yeah one got
that nominated. CMA's little disappointed in that, but.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
Like the songs.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
All right, all right, Trevor Lawrence or Mac Jones. Who's
quarterbacking today for the Jags?
Speaker 4 (39:13):
I can't. I can't give industry secrets.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
I'll say I'm more likely to believe that the starter
is gonna play it in the backup.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Okay, I hear what you're saying. There have you any
questions for me today?
Speaker 4 (39:27):
I do.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Who do you pull for in the big game? Are you?
Are you state guy?
Speaker 4 (39:32):
You're a Michigan guy.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
You know, it's funny you mentioned that I was rooting
for Michigan yesterday simply because I think that those Ohio
State fans are just blowhards, really, and that that's why
I kind of was rooting for Michigan.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
But I'm an Ohio state guy. But I don't like
I don't like what they're doing. Well, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
I just Andy, you can't, Andy, you can't go both ways.
Like I've been out there, I wanted to let you
buy gas. You can't buy gas in Michigan if you
are a state guy like you. I guess you have
to put it in a b get and keep it
in the back of your car. I don't know, but yeah,
that's tough.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
But by the way, could that be a sophomore slump
in the NFL? One person thinks so that more.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
Next on Fox Sunday.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Here you know, one has a slump, the other has
a bump.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
That's right around the corner.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
And obviously this is Fox Football Sunday on Fox Sports Radio.
He's Bucky Brooks and Andy Furman and together we're broadcasting
live from the tire rack dot Com studios.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
Tire rack dot Com. We'll help you get there.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
And on match selection fans, free shipping, free road has
a protection and over ten thousand recommended in storeless high
iraq dot com the way tire bying should be.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
And here he is the main football is made for
mister Bucky Brooks. How are you Buck?
Speaker 4 (40:41):
How are you man?
Speaker 5 (40:42):
I'm great and it can't complain. It's a beautiful Sunday
Football sund There.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
You know, I heard the top of the hour sportscast
that I knew I read about it last night. It
just makes me sick to my stomach. That Luke Connesseca
passed away at ninety nine. He was gonna be one
hundred on January the fifth. He didn't make it there.
And uh Luke Seca was a wonderful man. He taught
me how to eat spaghetti. He really did. I'll tell
you how back he did. Back in the day, I
(41:07):
was a sports information director at Saint Francis College of Brooklyn,
Division one school in basketball, and every Monday, all the
basketball coaches in the metropolitan area, talking about Rutgers, Seaton,
hall forda Manhattan, Saint John's Fairfield would come in from Connecticut.
They'd have a luncheon at Mama Leone's Italian restaurant in Manhattan.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
And I would go. And one Monday I was there
and I sat next.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
To Lou and he saw me eating spaghetti having difficulty
with it. He showed me how to twist it around
the fork, and we became fairly decent.
Speaker 4 (41:39):
You know.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
I'd send him little notes every now and again, And
about three four months ago he called me up and
it didn't sound too good, but he was ninety nine,
and you know.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
He's one of those guys. He just he was great
for the sport, great for the game.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
Won five hundred and twenty four games in basketball, and uh,
you know it's sad. It's sad when you see a
guy like that go. Everybody loved Luke Connoseca. I don't
know anybody bedworth to say when they played Georgetown with
John Thompson and was great with the sweaters back in
the day.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
So I will miss Louis. He was a good man.
Speaker 5 (42:08):
He really was, yeah, really really good man. I just look, man,
I just always love those old classic be Eiest games
because that's kind of like my teenage years on my
way to going to college, and so I really enjoyed
that stuff. I used to watch the robberies him and
John Thompson go at it. It just seems so much
bigger right when they were playing the guard and all
(42:28):
those other things. And so thoughts and prayers to his family. Man,
what a great run ninety nine. I think we all
would would would would would take ninety nine years on
this earth. So congratulations to him on a nice run.
And let's let's be happy for him as opposed to
being sad on his.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
Back, right, And he wasn't ill. I mean I know
what he had his senses. He just passed away.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Of old age. He just conned out. You know what happens.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
He didn't He didn't suffer from anything, and his family
was around him when he passed. So God bless him
or may he rested piece. All right, let's let's move
on and talk about what you call the sophomore slump.
What is the sophomore slump? I hear it all the time.
I think it was a term sort of invented by
Sports Illustrated back in the day.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Is it real, the sophomore slump in sports?
Speaker 5 (43:15):
It can be because it's a combination of things. Right,
sophomore slump is the sports world catching up with you.
One of the things that happens in sports is the
more you put yourself out there, the more people get
used to how you play, and they begin to adjust
to how you play, and you are challenged to adapt
and adjust your playing style and football, particularly at quarterback.
(43:40):
All the tape, all the defensive coordinators talk, they chat,
They're always scheming and tinkering in those things, and we're
seeing some of this stuff kind of play out.
Speaker 3 (43:48):
Okay, this is the best part of the show for
me every Sunday because we talk about your writing pros.
It's on NFL dot Com every Friday, and you wrote
this week about the sophomore slump and say what's up
with CJ Stroud? And obviously CJ Stroud right now is
going to be like the next superstar in the NFL.
At least according to the stats from last year, the
offensive Rookie of the Year pays for over four thousand yards.
(44:11):
So this year his numbers aren't too bad. And obviously
I'll give him an excuse. You suffered with his teammates
with injuries, a lot of injuries on that ball club.
But do you see a drop off because of his
skill set? What happened this year with CJ Stroud?
Speaker 4 (44:26):
So a few different things. As we talked about, the league.
Speaker 5 (44:31):
Is a tough league to be consistent, to play at
a consistently high level. That's why we revere the tom
Brady's of the world because they were able to do
it for such a long time, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees
and all those guys. Because the league is always adjusting
to what you do as a player. The tape circulates,
people use copycat schemes once someone had success, So as
(44:52):
a player you always have to grow and evolved and
continue to add.
Speaker 4 (44:58):
Weapons to the tool belt. For CJ.
Speaker 5 (45:00):
Stroud, he was very comfortable in Bobby Sloy's system as
a rookie.
Speaker 4 (45:04):
They did some things that were unique.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
They did play action stuff, crossers going across the field,
big home run shots and those things. This year, people
are on that they're taking those things away and they're
forced them to go to other pages of the playbook.
Speaker 4 (45:18):
When you combine that.
Speaker 5 (45:19):
With the fact that he's lost some of his perimeter
weapons to injury this year, tang Dale, Nico Collins, and
Stefan Diggs of all miss time.
Speaker 4 (45:26):
Digs is out for the rest of the year.
Speaker 5 (45:28):
Joe Mixon, who has giving them balance in the running game,
has been in and out the lineup. He's missed three
games and an offensive line that has been leaky. He's
taken more sacks and been hit more. And whenever a quarterback,
no matter how good he is, when a quarterback starts
to get hit, they change. And he's changed because he's
been hit more than he's been in the past. And
he also has not he doesn't have the same chemistry
(45:51):
that he had with his playmakers on the outside.
Speaker 3 (45:54):
You know, I'm glad you brought that up because you
talk about a quarterback suffering the quote sophomore slow. Maybe CJ. Stroud,
maybe he's not. People don't look at the offensive line.
They really don't. And I'm gonna bring up an example
and maybe on way off, basically I'm gonna talk about
Jared Goff. You could drive a bus over there and
they could block that bus. That's how good that offensive
line is in Detroit. And you talk about a guy
(46:15):
who probably was looked at as a as an also
ran quarterback, and now thanks to the surrounding parts that
he has in Detroit and that offensive line, Jared GoF
is going to be involved, perhaps maybe in the MVP conversation.
So it's funny. I mean, one quarterback looks like he's
did a little bit. Another quarterback who basically was put
out the pasture, it might be a possible MVP and
(46:37):
Jared Goff.
Speaker 5 (46:39):
Yeah, but let's let's let's let's be clear when it
comes to quarterbacks and what everyone has to understand about quarterback.
Speaker 4 (46:45):
No quarterback can do it alone.
Speaker 5 (46:46):
There aren't any John Wayne's out there right, There's no
one who's doing it by himself, who's dealing with everybody
and doesn't need any support. Every quarterback needs support. That
support normally comes in the form of the three piece caller, playmaker,
pass protectors. All Right, the play caller has to set
you up for success by putting you in a situation
where you always plan to your strips. The playmakers, the
(47:09):
pass catches and runners around you, they need to be
exceptional to be able to catch the passes that you throw,
expand the strike zone with their length, and make catch
and run plays where you turn a short passive to
a big play because they're explosive. And then the protection
is making sure that your quarterback doesn't get hit. It
is hard for someone to succeed at a high level
(47:29):
consistently when you don't have a plus marks.
Speaker 4 (47:33):
In each of those areas.
Speaker 5 (47:34):
And so some of the things with Jerry Goff, Yeah,
he's surrounded by a perfect cast. He has everything around him.
But he's also a really good player. But good players
need more good players around them to be great players,
and that's what we're seeing.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
Okay, we talked about the sophomore slump, and I have
confidence in the CJ.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
Strott. I think that everything will.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
Be fine because, basically, as you mentioned early on, the
injury factor, including the running game, which certainly really helps
a quarterback. You know, Joel Mixon has been out for
so long, so I think that he'll be fine. And
Mixing's back. You talk about now a sophomore bump. You
talk about Bryce Young all of a sudden, now that
they said he's out and finished, now.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
He's coming back.
Speaker 3 (48:11):
Now Carolina looks like, you know, he's kind of found
out what's wrong and made some adjustments.
Speaker 5 (48:19):
Yeah, he has made some adjustments, and it's not all
reflected in his numbers, but it's more so in his.
Speaker 4 (48:25):
Ability to play.
Speaker 5 (48:26):
Like I would say the decisiveness of his play now
compared to in the past. He was hesitant and indecisive early.
He's now playing with more confidence. Part of that is
due to the line has been playing better. They've been
running the ball with Cuba Hubbard. He's given them like
they bounce, but they don't have to do everything on him.
And then Bryce is coming to his own in terms
(48:47):
of making plays. He's had some of the young guys
help him out. Xavier Laguette is one of those guys
that has certainly helped. And so he's growing into it.
And I think what people have to understand with Bryce
and I didn't put this in the article. Sometimes when
you're a guy that's Bryce Young who has played at
modern day high school, best high school in the country, right,
top two three in USA today and the rankings every year,
(49:09):
you go to Alabama and you have a lot of
success for a team that was loaded with firepower. This
is the first time on the field that he's really
had adversity. And the thing when you're drafting players, you
never know how they're going to react and respond to when.
Speaker 4 (49:24):
Things don't go their way.
Speaker 5 (49:25):
This is the first time in his football life that
Bryce Young hasn't had things go his way, so he
had to work through that to get to the other side.
The Panthers needed to show a little more patience letting
him work through some of those goring paints, particularly given
where he was starting from in that organization. But yeah,
some of that is just the natural maturation process that
young quarterbacks and young players have to go through.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the coaching situation, which
you've always been on one of those players that have
been so so I guess important to tell me how important.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
A coach is to a team. But the teaching factor.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
And the inexperienced play calling in Carolina with Dave Canalist.
I mean it's only the second year as an offensive
play caller. How much was that a factor in Bryce Young?
Speaker 4 (50:11):
Oh, it's a factor.
Speaker 5 (50:13):
I mean it's a factor because Dave Canalis has only
been a play caller for one year, and then you
add onto that by giving him head coaching duties.
Speaker 4 (50:22):
And that's hard.
Speaker 5 (50:23):
That's hard for most people to juggle and manage, you know,
but it's one of the things that they have been
able to do. It's just unfortunate for Bryce Young that
he said three play callers in a year and a half.
He had Rank right, he had Thomas Brown for a
little bit, and then he you know, he had David Canals.
Speaker 4 (50:42):
That's a lot of different voices in your ear.
Speaker 5 (50:45):
So it certainly hasn't been a smooth ride for him
when it comes to it.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
All right, So now let's talk a little bit about
games on the field today. And talked about the Texans
and your Jacksonville Jaguars and mentioned it early on. I
asked you about the quarterback situation right now, but before
beginning to that, the Texans right now, the Houston Texas
have lost four out of six. They lost a Tennessee
list week. That's a bad loss, but we'll loves the Titans.
Quarterback of Tennessee was sacked eight times by the Texans
(51:10):
defense last week.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
The Texans running game. Where did it go?
Speaker 3 (51:13):
I have to say, well, Joe Mixon wasn't playing, so
now he's coming back the Jaguars right now, Max, I
did ask you this, but I'm pretty sure Trevor Lawrence
is going to play today. But I don't think Mac Jones. Look,
I'm not gonna preuss you on that. Trevor Lawrence gonna play.
Speaker 4 (51:28):
I told you everything you need to know. Look for
the starter, Look for the starting quarterback to play.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
He's gonna play. What do you think? What do you
like in this game? I mean it's a tough hole.
Speaker 4 (51:38):
I mean it's a tough game. Man. Look it's a
tough game. You're sitting at two and nine, you're trying
to figure out why you motivated to play.
Speaker 5 (51:44):
I will say that if Trevor Lawrence plays, you give
him credit for showing up right at a time when
a quarterback could make a decision, like you know what
the two and nine. If we're not going anywhere, I'm
not gonna play. I'm gonna take care of my own.
He may decide to take the ball and go, and
so you talk about the captain going down with the ship.
That's exactly what you want to see from a franchise
(52:04):
quarterback in terms of on the field play. He gives
them ability to use all the weapons. On offense, you
can use the entire playbook. You can lean on him
to make plays. You want them to be able to
protect himself. But it can be a bit of a reset.
And if you're the Jaguars, man, the one thing that
you want, you just want to win a game, no
different than the Cleveland Browns taking on the Pittsburgh still
(52:25):
is in that wintery wonderland a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (52:28):
You want to see the same thing.
Speaker 5 (52:29):
Man, You work too hard, You put too many hours
in to keep losing. It's miserable and so you just
want to get that better taste out your mouth. And
if you can do it against your division rival, man,
what better opportunity than to do it against Agetown.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
All right, Now, you got to look at the future
in this game. The Cults are playing at the Patriots today.
Two quarterbacks of the future, right, Anthony Richardson and Drake May. Now,
Drake May your guy for North Carolina. He might end
up being the better pro down the road in the future,
but now I think the Colts have a better roster.
That's why I think the Colts win this ball again,
because you know, Anthony Richardson has more around him than
(53:05):
Drake May has.
Speaker 5 (53:08):
Yeah, he does have more around him. You know, it's
such a tough deal, right when you're Drake May and
you don't really have anything. You don't have the stuff
around you that you need to be successful.
Speaker 4 (53:20):
He's been able to.
Speaker 5 (53:20):
Flash though, and so you appreciate that. So I love
that about Drake May. For Anthony Richardson, I'm gonna say
this because I've been very critical on our show about
Anthony Richardson and just from the tap out situation, not
understanding what was required of a franchise quarterback. But then
upon reflection, some of it's his fault, but some of
it really is a leadership thing from the people that
were in charge, general manager, head coach. They should have
(53:42):
had a plan for him to develop into the franchise
quarterback that they wanted. He's come back, He's been better
since he's returned.
Speaker 4 (53:50):
You like that.
Speaker 5 (53:51):
I still I would lean towards the Colts in this
situation in terms of winning this game, just because they
have a better team than the Patriots. But make no mistake,
man Drake May has the potential to be a star.
They have to make sure they get playmakers around him
so he can showcase his skills.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
Okay, here's the big one right here. The Seattle Seahawks
against the Jets at.
Speaker 2 (54:12):
New Jersey today in New Jersey.
Speaker 3 (54:14):
Seahawks are six and five, Jets of three and eight,
and the Seahawks have won two straight. And we talked
about the Seahowks, but we didn't talk about their defense.
We talk about Gino all the time, their quarterback, you
know Smith, but their defense is improving. They gave up
a combined twenty three points and their least two wins
they went too straight against Arizona and San Francisco. And
I got to believe that defense is something that you
(54:36):
want to play.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
You know, you may have the skill set, but you
talk about.
Speaker 3 (54:39):
Guys that are on the line that weigh two fifty
to three hundred pounds, you know, really and truly, it's
a will.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
Power thing more than skill set.
Speaker 3 (54:47):
Don't you think you go out there and say, look,
we're gonna get it done today. I saw that last
night with Michigan. Defensively on the defensive line, you know,
you gotta want to do it. You were an offense.
If you have the skill set, you're gonna win. I mean,
some guys are just better than others on defense. I
think it's a will to win.
Speaker 5 (55:05):
Yeah, defense, it is a bit of a will to
win and wanted to get it done and wanted to
make sure that you're on it because it's reactionary as
opposed to being able to dictate. Yeah, you certainly want
to do.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
That. Part of it.
Speaker 5 (55:19):
Offensively is more about execution, understanding where you are, how
you want to attack in those things.
Speaker 4 (55:23):
Defense is all reaction. How do you handle it? How
do you respond?
Speaker 5 (55:27):
How do you adjust to what is being thrown at you?
Speaker 4 (55:30):
Right?
Speaker 3 (55:30):
And the big question today is on the offensive side
of the ball. Aaron Rodgers, I mean, what's the deal
with this?
Speaker 2 (55:35):
Guys? You got to play next year?
Speaker 3 (55:37):
Now he got everything he wanted, He got every player
that he wanted to come to New York, and now
all of a sudden he's down the dumpstead three and
eight he hasn't done anything. And really you said it
last week. It's age.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
I mean, he just can't get it done. And I
think that.
Speaker 3 (55:51):
One of the things that is the problem with him
is that, you know, people say, well, you know tom
Brady played, but Tom Brady kept himself in position to play.
He didn't even eat turkey on TV on Turkey Day, right,
I mean he wouldn't even have the turkey. He wouldn't
have a turkey drum. He would not do that. This
guy is total control of his body. Twenty four seventh,
three sixty five where Aaron Rodgers. I don't think he
(56:12):
works out in the offseason, and.
Speaker 2 (56:14):
It showed this year. He's lost it. He really has.
And I don't think he's going to play next year.
Speaker 5 (56:20):
Yeah, reallta worth he plays. I think one thing tom
Brady spoiled us. He spoiled us in the fact of
thinking that you can be a forty something quarterback and
have success in this league.
Speaker 4 (56:29):
Andy, you're not supposed to play pro football at the
age of forty. You just physically not.
Speaker 2 (56:34):
I mean, you're not supposed to play too forty.
Speaker 4 (56:37):
Yeah. The game is too violence, too physical.
Speaker 5 (56:39):
It's hard to sustain the pounding and to withstand the pounding.
Speaker 4 (56:45):
And all that other stuff.
Speaker 5 (56:46):
And so we had unrealist expectations for Aaron Rodgers. If
we had dug a little deeper, he was a declining player.
He had a spark of life because they drafted Jordan Love.
But this is who Aaron Rodgers is. And unless he
shifts into more of a managerial role where he's surrounded
by premier talent and someone a coach that can coach
him hard and keep him under control, he never would respond.
(57:09):
And so now I think it's over.
Speaker 4 (57:10):
Man.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
I think this is the last run enjoyed the last
five six weeks.
Speaker 4 (57:14):
I think this is the last time we'll see Aaron
Rodgers in our league.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
And the thing is, I hope he doesn't become a
television commentator. I hope he's not hired by anybody because
I don't want to hear him.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
No. I hope, yeah, I hope not.
Speaker 5 (57:26):
Yeah, Like I just I just think there's a little
Aaron Rodgers fatigue when it comes to all of it,
or whatever.
Speaker 4 (57:32):
I will say this.
Speaker 5 (57:33):
I do like the fact that he uh talked about
he went back to cal like doing their their bye week.
Can some time to go back and see Jeff Tafford
and all those other things. All these guys came back
to Seawan and be smoder and all those guys back.
That was cool, But in terms of how he's been
since been with the Jets, nah, And this is what
happens when you turn the franchise over to players or
(57:55):
to a quarterback and you make him bigger than the team.
This is what you've run the risk of. You cannot
put anybody over the team. Everyone is not on the
same level, but you can't make it where it was
like Aaron Rodgers and the King and everybody else a paupers.
Speaker 4 (58:09):
And that's what it kind of felt like.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
And players know that too. Players know that hurts.
Speaker 3 (58:14):
It really does all right, Last, but not least, let's
go to Titans Commanders Now. Commanders lost to the Cowboys
of All People thirty four to twenty sixth last week,
and the way they lost was ugly. They allowed a
pair of touchdowns on kickoff returns that have failed on
site kick attempt in the final seconds, and Austin Sebert
missed the field goal and he missed two extra points
that can't happen, and the look at Tennessee right now.
(58:34):
Their run defense has been really, really good the last
two weeks. They held Minnesota and both the Texans to
one hundred and twenty two combined yards on a total
of fifty carries. But now Jade and Daniel's gonna go
crazy today. He will The Titans have to hope for
a few big plays from their quarterback.
Speaker 2 (58:49):
Will love us.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
I don't think it's going to happen. I think the
command is you hit a speed bump. That's what happens every.
Speaker 2 (58:53):
Once in a while. I think the Commanders win this one.
They gotta win this one. They need it. They're seven
and five.
Speaker 5 (58:59):
Yeah know they needed a dropped a few of lady
that kind of threw them off. But they need to
get Jade Daniels back on track. He hasn't really been
the same since he heard his ribs and that's been
the big factor. That's been the major story because he
hasn't been able to really utilize his athleticism and his legs.
Teams have kind of caught up with him and made
him play from the pocket. That they've had success. They
need Jayden Daniels to be the superhero that he was
(59:21):
early in the year. When he's that. Yeah, the offense
is good enough, and then defensively, they're good enough to
compliment an offense that put points on the board, but
they are not what we call a standalone defense that
can shrink the game and kind of hold up. They
need this offense to get going, so look for the
commanders to try and get it going. But I'm gonna
say this, don't sleep on the Titans defense is playing
kind of good.
Speaker 4 (59:40):
There's salty on the inside.
Speaker 5 (59:42):
Two big guys Jeffrey Simmons and Tovandre sweat on the
inside make life miserable for opponents.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
Yeah, we go all right, Harry, he's Bucket Brooks.
Speaker 3 (59:49):
Get him on Twitter at Bucket Brooks or Mike Harmon
who joins us next hour at swollen dumb on myself
out Andy from an FSR, or if you so be it,
if you have the guts eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox.
Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
That's our phone number.
Speaker 3 (01:00:02):
That translates to eight seven seven nine to nine six
sixty three sixty nine. We've got bon and barrel betting
in this hour, and the question is which team needs
this game?
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
More will tell you next. There's just too many flags.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
That's right around the corner we'll get to that in
just about a minute. He is Bucky Brooks. I'm Andy Furmer.
Together we have Fox Football Sunny and Fox Smit's Radio.

Speaker 4 (01:00:50):
Up the air.
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
All right, let's move on right now, and we got
bon and Barrel betting. I'd say it about fifteen to
twenty minutes from now, and I would say this, and
if you look at the stats in the National Football League, Buck,
these guys are the best quarterback wide receiver combo in
the league.
Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
But they may not see.
Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
The playoffs unless they watch it on TV. With you
and me, and we're talking about the Bengals quarterback Joe
Burrow and the wide receiver Jamar Chase and the Bengals
host of Steelers today and the question I have is
really and truly who needs this game more? Because the
Bengals looks like that like a fifteen percent chance of
a postseason big and the Steelers are playing for a
number one seed. So for who which team is it
(01:01:30):
more important for a win today?
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (01:01:33):
It has it the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pittsburgh Steelers can't
go off the track because Baltimore Ravens are hanging there.
I know Cincinnati is trying to be in there, but
I don't know if Cincinnati will play well enough on
defense to be able to be a factor they need
to win. But to me, it is a bigger game
for Pittsburgh because Pittsburgh, man, they dropped the stinker to
the Cleveland Browns, they got a bounce back. They cannot
have that impact them. I think it's a bigger game
(01:01:55):
for the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (01:01:56):
But I would say this, I mean, Pittsburgh right now
has always been a mic on the defensively based team.
There's still somewhat offensive challenged challenge right and I think
the Bengals right now can put up the points. That's
the thing. The problem with the Bengals right now. You
can put up the points, but the thing is you
need to run the clock out once you have those points,
(01:02:16):
and they don't have the running game to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
That's the problem.
Speaker 4 (01:02:20):
Yeah, they don't have the running game.
Speaker 5 (01:02:22):
And you know, Joe Mixon is down there running like
crazy in Agetown, but they don't have the running game
to bounce it out.
Speaker 4 (01:02:28):
They don't have the running game to do it.
Speaker 5 (01:02:30):
For Pittsburgh Steelers, their running game is everything. They have
to have the running game so they can throw the
ball down the field. When it comes to Russell Wilson
and how they want to play with George Pickens and
stuff on the outside contrasting styles, the path to victory
for the Steelers is always a narrow one based on
how they approach it. Cincinnati, they need to run the
(01:02:52):
football because they need more physicality in their approach their
team that is almost like a flag football team. They
want to throw where they have great weapons on the outside.
But this game, when you get into this part of
the year, you got to be able to punish people.
You got to be able to punch people in the mouth.
You got to control the game with the running game,
and they're just not good enough right now. On dead aspect.
Speaker 3 (01:03:12):
You know, it's funny because people talk about the Saquon
Barkley situation leaving New York and what he's done now
in Philadelphia. No one's really talking much about Joe Mixon
leaving Cincinnati and going to the Texans, although I know
he's been on the bench for a while because he's
been hurt. But that's a major loss and I'll never
forget this. Back in July, the Bengals have like their
lunching at pre camp luncheon. I went to the luncheon.
I is Zach Taylor the coach. I said, you know
(01:03:34):
you're losing Joe Mixon. What about Zach Morris. Oh, well,
we'll be fine. Zach Mooss hasn't done anything and always hurda.
Zack Moss is not the kind of runner that Joe
Mixon is. It's just two different ballplayers.
Speaker 5 (01:03:46):
No, I mean, look, two completely different ballplayers, and it's
impacted them like they haven't been able to they haven't
been able to like control the game offensively because they
don't have that dominant running running back in place. And
so if they're able to get some of that then
they can kind of attack and dictate it. But for
the Bengals to win and win consistently down the stretch.
(01:04:08):
Their offense has to play at a high level to
the point where their offense is their best defense.
Speaker 3 (01:04:14):
See what you're saying, I kind of like, you know,
I hate to say this because I live in the
greatest Cincinnati area, live in their honkey. You know why
I want them to win because the city is so
depressed when they lose.
Speaker 2 (01:04:27):
That's why I want them to win.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
I'm not one of those row rock guys that want
to jump off a bridge when basically they lose.
Speaker 2 (01:04:32):
I'm not that way, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
And honestly, I said this to you once before, you know,
when I was doing local radio in Cincinnati, I kind
of rooted for them to lose because it was a
better radio show.
Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
When they lost. People go crazy on the radio when
they lose. You know, they call up.
Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
They want the coach fire, they want this, they want that.
When they win, it's like, you know, no big whoop.
So I want to see them win now because tomorrow
morning's going to be a depressed day if they lose.
If they win, there's still some hope. But I don't
think they're going to win. I think Pittsburg it is
just a better team.
Speaker 5 (01:05:00):
I really do, it'd be doubly depressing off the heroes
of the Michigan loss. A lot of people there, so
maybe they need a little bit of luck to kind
of help them.
Speaker 2 (01:05:11):
It's like a loser city now.
Speaker 3 (01:05:13):
I mean, yesterday the University of Cincinnati, they looked like
their fifth straight game.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
They looked the TCU.
Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
They were down twenty to seven, and they came back
in the last minute or so, and again there was
a mismanagement on the clock that could have tied it up.
They didn't do that, so they lost, and they ended
up with a five and seven record this year, so
they're not going to a bowl again.
Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
So now that everybody wants.
Speaker 3 (01:05:31):
Scott Sadafield's head, it's not gonna happen with these coaches buyouts.
They don't have the kind of money to buy out
these guys. I don't see sata Field getting fired after
his second year. I don't see that happening here.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
But again, you know, you got to win.
Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
I mean, the city's losing everything, Red's lost, Bengal's losing,
University Cincinnati's losing, So come on, get it together, really please.
Speaker 5 (01:05:54):
Yeah, it's a depressing time, but you know, the Bearcats
thing is interesting, right, because you have to feel kind
of weird if you're a Cincinnati fan because you've seen
them in like three years, three four years, they were
a team that played in the title game. They've been
at the top, and to now be out of it,
like that's crazy. I do wonder if you could go
(01:06:16):
back in time, if lu Fickle regrets leaving what was
a nice situation for him in Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (01:06:22):
I wonder if you.
Speaker 5 (01:06:22):
Regrets that because the Bearcats were rolling they I mean,
they had it going. It was popping Desmond Ritt and
their crew, and so I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:06:32):
But it wasn't the Big Twelve. It was the a
American Athletic Conference, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:06:35):
But like did it really matter you went to the
championship game from that, Like, I don't know if it
really mattered.
Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
You know, you're right because it's probably even more difficult
to do it like that because they don't usually take
a team that's not in the major conference in those tournaments,
and there was only four teams involved in not twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
But again, the mindset of a coach, I mean it's
like A money's a factor perhaps, and B is like
I want to see what I could do on a
bigger stage. Maybe that's the challenge, you know, And with
those two things together, you know, make you hungry and
you want to go, and sometimes you just want to
get a new start, start fresh. Could be I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:07:13):
I mean I guess so, I mean that is a
way to think about it. But yeah, they just just.
Speaker 4 (01:07:18):
Not great, you know, not great.
Speaker 5 (01:07:21):
Oh boy, feel bad, feel bad for feel bad for
ohiring Cincinnati and all the things that are going on.
Speaker 4 (01:07:26):
Just tough weekend.
Speaker 5 (01:07:27):
If you Bingle don't come through, if the Bengals don't
come through, you know what I'm gonna do. And if
the Bengals don't come through, I'm gonna send you a
vat of Skyline chili to kind of help you drown
your sorrows.
Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
Speaking of Senny, did you ever get the material I
sent to Jacksonville?
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
Did they've forward that to you?
Speaker 5 (01:07:41):
No, I'm sure I haven't got that, And you know
offline them have to give you my address so you
can send it directly to me.
Speaker 2 (01:07:47):
That's all I'll do, all right.
Speaker 3 (01:07:49):
Now we've got the Cardinals at the Vikings, and now
the Vikings have a new backup quarterback and Daniel Jones,
how surprised, were you that dj is going from the
Giants to the Vike while you pick the vikings of
teams to go to.
Speaker 5 (01:08:01):
Not surprised because when you take the money out of it, right,
So Daniel Jones has made a ton of money, so
money's not a consideration. This is one strictly for the
plight of your career. You want to make sure you
go to a place where you can get coach will
by our quarterback guru in a way. You want to
put yourself in a position to use it as a
launch pad to your next situation, your next job. Okay,
(01:08:23):
So Kevin O'Connell has already shown that he can be
a guy that's a bit of a whisper, right, not
only what he did with Kirk Cousins elevating him, but
what he's done with Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones.
Speaker 4 (01:08:33):
You want to go by someone who.
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
Has already talked positively about your talents, someone that you
can learn from. Former NFL quarterback who's the head coach
who really spends time with the quarterbacks, and you want
to be in that Sean McVay, cow Shanahan Tree because
when you become a free agent, you want to play
in that system because we've seen what it's done to
elevate players. I've said personally, the Shanahan system can turn
(01:08:57):
average players in the Pro Bowlers and Pro bowlers in
the Envy.
Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
That's what we've seen. Wow, Well now he goes there.
Speaker 5 (01:09:04):
Kyle Shanahan, Mike Lafleur, like all of these guys that
employed that system can now call Kevin O'Connell to get
the skinny on what's going on. The other situation that
does for the Vikings is if Sam Donald, as a
free agent wants to get big money, they can move
on from him and have Daniel Jones in place to
do the same thing that they've done with Sam Donald.
(01:09:26):
So to me, it was a win win for both parties.
It's made a lot of sense.
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
How do you like that now?
Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
I talked about flags coming up to the segment of
the year and that Arizona Cardinals were flagg for holding penalties.
It seemed like after every play last week they lost
to Seattle sixteenth to six, and they completed only three
for twelve third down conversions. So right now it's a
big game for both Cardinals is still alive. I just
think the Vikings are a better team. I just think
they played better. They've hit a bit of a speed bump,
(01:09:51):
but I think the Vikings are a better team than
the Vikings win this game.
Speaker 2 (01:09:54):
Keys for Arizona.
Speaker 3 (01:09:54):
They got to eliminate the penalties, basically got to do
that and see that the defensively, Arizona's pass rush got
to keep on bringing it, bring the heat. They have
five sacks last week. Keep on bringing that heat and
maybe they got a shot. I like Arizona. I think
that their coach is up there, maybe in the in
the conversation for Coach of the Year, but right now,
I think the Vikings win this one.
Speaker 5 (01:10:16):
Yeah, Vikings win Arizona is a nice story. Jonathanan's don
a great job.
Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
The culture. They just resigned.
Speaker 5 (01:10:23):
They just signed James Connor to an extension, which is great.
He's played well there. Kyler Murray's kind of bouncing back
Minnesota to me is really good and they're built to
play in these moments. Brian Floyds is I can't say
underrated defense coordinator, but a lot of attention on what
he's been able to do with this defense. They're gonna
get after the quarterback, They're gonna heat the quarterback up.
They're going They're going to try and force him and
(01:10:44):
bait him into some poor decisions and I think they
may get a turnover two off of that. Give me
the Minnesota Vikings. They know it's at stake this eight.
This NFC North situation is tough. They cannot fall behind.
I think they understand what is in front of them.
They can't let the Packers get to them, and they're
still trying to chase down the Detroit lines.
Speaker 4 (01:11:02):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
Chargers at the Falcons today, Falcons six and five in Atlanta,
Charges seven and three. And what the Chargers do best,
not only do they run the football really well.
Speaker 2 (01:11:12):
But they could they take care of the football.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
They don't fumble the football, they have possession, and I
think it's a credit to their coach Jim Harborough. I
think he's done a great job and giving that I
hate to use the term culture, but basically turn this
team around.
Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
He really has.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
I think right now they're going to run the football.
That's what they're going to do against Atlanta. Falconers must
get the ball to their playmakers if they can. But
I think that the Chargers are going to control the clock,
control the football and win this football game.
Speaker 4 (01:11:39):
Yeah, I'm with you on that. It's a beat him
down game.
Speaker 5 (01:11:41):
If you're the Chargers, physical, physical, physical, you want to
make this an old school street fight in a phone booth.
You want to impose, you will, And it has to
be one of those situations where they get back on track.
Last two weeks defensively have not been up to their standard.
They got to get back to playing their kind of
brand a ball on defense and then offensively, it's about
methodically picking the Falcons apart, running the ball, setting up
(01:12:04):
play action, finding a lab McConkie as much as you can. Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:12:07):
Yeah, Chargers got to get back on track. I believe
they get back on tracking this one.
Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
I do just like he did in Michigan. The same
kind of format. Really it really is, isn't.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
It Never changes, same thing, never changes, never changes, never changes.
Speaker 3 (01:12:21):
Buccaneers at the Carolina Panthers right now, right now the
Carolina Panthers league's worst run defense. So what if I'm
a coordinator, I don't have to stay at to one
in the morning and sleep on the couch like I
hear these stories that they do. If they have the
league's worst run defense, where I'm gonna do it with
the Bucks.
Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
I'm gonna run the football. That's basically what I'm gonna do, right.
Speaker 5 (01:12:41):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, look, you get the formula. The
formula doesn't change, you know. But here's what I'll say
about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers are kind of
finding their way. Toy Bowles is always back in the corner,
but they find somehow found a way to get back
out of it. At some point, you need Baker Mayfield
to take this thing over. If they're going to be
the team that kind of swipes the division. It'd be
(01:13:02):
a nice start for him to kind of get it
cranked and going.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
Right now, Okay, the Buccaneers are out the fourth most
passing yards in the game.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
And I will say this much.
Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
We talked about the bumps, and you mentioned Bryce Young
with the bump that he's turning it around a little bit.
Last week Bryce Young threw for a season I two
into sixty three yards and they almost upset the Chiefs.
The Chiefs just know how to win. They get it done,
and I think they know that. I think the players know.
Say they're behind, maybe in the fourth quarter and they're
(01:13:30):
by a touchdown. The score field or whatever it may be.
They know in they're heart of us. We don't need
the panic. We're going to come back. We've done it before.
We're gonna win.
Speaker 2 (01:13:38):
And that's what they do. And they've done it again.
Speaker 3 (01:13:39):
They did it against the Raiders and Thanksgiving on Friday
night they did it so bright Bryce Young came back.
They almost beat the Chiefs. Chiefs are playing on a
tight rope right now. But I think Bryce Young's turning
it around. He's turned the corner. He really has.
Speaker 5 (01:13:52):
He has turned the corner. I want to see him
continue to progress. We're going to see him continue to
make moves. Dave Canalis and those guys have not given
him anything. They refuse to name him like the franchise
quarterback and say that, hey, he's gonna be the starter
for the rest of the season.
Speaker 4 (01:14:06):
They're making a young guy earn it. So let's see
him earn it.
Speaker 5 (01:14:08):
Let's see him continue to play at a high lovel
If he does it, man, he deserves uh to continue
on as a starter, not only this year but next year.
Speaker 3 (01:14:15):
By the way, where live forthtierrack dot com Studios and
also gotta mention this rapid radios. Rapid radios are the
official communication device of Fox Sports Radio. Now in an emergency,
in an emergency, and you never know, Bryce Young may
have an emergency team.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
Maybe I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
In an emergency, you want rapid radios instant push to
talk walkie talkies. Why for clear national LTE coverage and
one touch communication, peace of mind, for connecting with family
in an emergency.
Speaker 2 (01:14:41):
Gotta rapid radios dot com right now?
Speaker 3 (01:14:44):
Why up to sixty percent off and free shipping. He's
Bucket Brooks, am Andy Firman, and now it's time for
a real war.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
What it is it?
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Bottom barrel betting is freaking next bottom barrel betting right
around the corner.
Speaker 2 (01:14:57):
About eleven minutes stile before the top of the hour.

Speaker 7 (01:15:14):
I know you guys miss me, and I especially know
Bucky misses me because I do.
Speaker 8 (01:15:19):
You didn't do too good. I'm sorry.
Speaker 7 (01:15:20):
Bucky, I was signing it up. I know I convinced you,
and I know you thought you did good. But Andy
got four, Bucky got one last time, so I know
it's wild.
Speaker 8 (01:15:30):
So the fact that I'm back, maybe you'll get some help.
Speaker 4 (01:15:33):
Bucky.
Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
You know two of the list three, two one of
the list three?
Speaker 4 (01:15:36):
What are we doing? Like you sting me up? Dude? Bucket?
Speaker 8 (01:15:41):
You're still in the lead overall though, So it's Andy, Why.
Speaker 3 (01:15:44):
Are you against me? Why did you congratulate me? Why
are you against me? I don't get it.
Speaker 7 (01:15:48):
Why would he he's a competitive guy. You know, he's
an athlete, and you wouldn't understand competitive. Yeah, you wouldn't
understand it. It's okay, but let's geta he's in that.
Speaker 3 (01:15:56):
Wait, wait a minute, time, he's a competitive to an athlete,
a competitive guy.
Speaker 2 (01:16:01):
I play the stock market. What's the difference?
Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
Right?
Speaker 7 (01:16:03):
You're up, I say, am looking at the Let's get
right into it, Andy, I don't please listen. In the
Women's Grand Slam of Curling or yeah, Team Hasselborg is
taking on Team Human today at eight a m. Pacific
standard time. Team Hasslborg is plus one ninety while Team
Homan is minus two sixty Bucky, let's start with you.
Speaker 8 (01:16:23):
Maybe we could change it up here.
Speaker 2 (01:16:25):
Look at you favorite to oh man.
Speaker 4 (01:16:27):
Okay, so I guess I'm gonna go with team human.
Speaker 9 (01:16:30):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
What what is this?
Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
I like that?
Speaker 7 (01:16:34):
You should be It's positive. It's positive reinforcement. You're you
don't need it. You know, Bucky's a little down man.
I want to keep him up.
Speaker 8 (01:16:41):
Yeah, it's a back a couple of weeks for Bucky.
Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
It's gonna be another one today. So he's got hassle
bound whatever.
Speaker 8 (01:16:49):
He's got home on. Do you want to take Castle Boorg?
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
I got hastle boy. You know what, because I'm not
going with the loser. That's why. That's the only reason
I'm not going with the loser. He picked a loser.
If you got to pick losers every week.
Speaker 8 (01:17:00):
And if you guys didn't want to watch that, I
would have loved.
Speaker 3 (01:17:02):
To see Bucket when he played. He must have really
been a real cry baby if.
Speaker 5 (01:17:06):
They're a loss, real crab baby. No crab baby, don't
believe in that.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (01:17:12):
In the Ukrainian Table Tennis League, Rustling is taking on
Taross right now. Taross is minus one fifty five while
Rustling is plus one ten.
Speaker 8 (01:17:21):
Andy, we can go ahead and stay with you this
pig t Tarross.
Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
I love Tarass really, I've seen tapes of Tarass. Oh yeah,
he goes both ways. When I say he goes both ways,
he could play left the right then, yeah, that's what
I mean, both ways. You couldn't take him the wrong way.
Please don't take it the wrong way. When I say
he goes both ways, I.
Speaker 8 (01:17:37):
Don't think anyone took it that way. But okay, wow, I.
Speaker 4 (01:17:43):
Mean wow, all right, I was thrown off a little bit.
That was That was a distraction. It nervous distraction. Give me,
give me the opposite.
Speaker 7 (01:17:51):
He goes to the wrestling, all right, he goes the
other way. Not that way though, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:56):
I can go both ways. I don't go up that way.
Speaker 7 (01:18:00):
In the Snooker UK Championship, Barry Hawkins is taking on
Jude Trump in a few minutes. Barry Hawkins is plus
two fifty while jud Trump is minus three fifty.
Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Andy Trump Trump is a tr I know.
Speaker 8 (01:18:13):
Yeah, I had to add it because of the name.
I was like, I don't think he's related it anyway,
I hope not.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
I was just like, yeah, I got Hawkins like her
I used to love Hershey Hawkins.
Speaker 2 (01:18:22):
You know the basketball player, Yeah, Hersie or Hershey. I
don't remember, but I liked him. If he played for
the seventy six ers. I'll go with Hawkins Hawkins.
Speaker 4 (01:18:31):
It's Bucky, Okay, Well I go I go opposite, like
I go opposite. We can't.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
I got the Trump.
Speaker 8 (01:18:36):
You might have to change it, can though, Bucky? Because
I do the Trump dance.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
I see these NFL players doing the Trump dance?
Speaker 4 (01:18:41):
Now, yeah, that's that's fine. Look, it's it's temporary. Like
you can't. You can't start changing your thing. Shit, I
like a couple of losses. Got to see.
Speaker 7 (01:18:51):
That's wisdom. You're in this league for a while. It's dynasty.
You're like the Warriors. I get it.
Speaker 4 (01:18:55):
I got it.
Speaker 8 (01:18:56):
So this one's a little different.
Speaker 4 (01:18:58):
Guys.
Speaker 7 (01:18:59):
It might be my own line, but I make the rules,
so you guys got to deal with it. Molana, I
just hit the theaters November twenty seventh, and the box number.
Box numbers are crazy right now, Andy, Bucky, do you

Speaker 4 (01:19:17):
Who's uh, let's go Buck go over? Let's go over
great with you over.
Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
Three hundred million, man, that's a lot. I'm gonna go
one days.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
That's big time. I mean that's real big.
Speaker 8 (01:19:27):
What do you think Have any of you guys seen
it yet?
Speaker 2 (01:19:30):
No? But what do you think?
Speaker 7 (01:19:31):
What do I I'm gonna go over just because everyone's
taking their kids, well, you know, his gaming weekend, so.
Speaker 3 (01:19:38):
I picked on the I'm not gonna go see it.
I'm not going because I don't want to win.
Speaker 4 (01:19:42):

Speaker 8 (01:19:43):

Speaker 3 (01:21:01):
I mean, I think that if he would have owned
it after the game, and Bucket made it a great.
Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
Point early on today saying that he screwed up in
that commander's game as.
Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
Well, but if he would have owned it after the
game and saying that it was on me the time
out though he said he did all the right things.
Speaker 2 (01:21:16):
We heard the tape. We heard that we played it, so.
Speaker 3 (01:21:18):
I think that when you do that, you have no
other course but to say bye bye, take your bags
and leave. Because the fan base was crazy, social media
went nuts, and he just sounded like a fool.
Speaker 2 (01:21:31):
He did, so you gotta let it go. Let him go.
Speaker 10 (01:21:33):
Well, you can't change your yard. I mean he did
that for multiple weeks in a row. We chronicled it
all the way along to the bitter ridiculous conclusion off
of Thursday's catastrophic loss. I called for the upset, so
I was more mad that they didn't make me right
with my plus ten and a half pick on Thanksgiving Day.
(01:21:54):
But it's like Lincoln Riley at USC this year, guys,
like everything was. It's one play away, one play away,
and you can look at a number of Bears losses
and go, well, one play away, Bucky.
Speaker 1 (01:22:06):
I'll ask you this.
Speaker 10 (01:22:07):
I know he's he's a young quarterback, but you also
just elevated Thomas Brown. They don't have any say in
any of this. None of the veterans can stop the insanity.
Like Susan Powder. There you go, there's a timely reference.
Go look at her up infomercial lunacy of the eighties
and nineties.
Speaker 5 (01:22:25):
Look here, here's what I say about the Bears, like
iraflus lost the squad. There's a there's a great article
on the Athletic that kind of talked about how his
lack of accountability to the team really undid a lot
of the positives that were going on with the Bears.
The refusal to acknowledge his own shortcomings and the loss
(01:22:45):
with the Commanders while he benched Tybreek Stevenson. He didn't
take any responsibility for failing to call the time out
or playing soft covers before that. That then escalates into
the Shane Walton thing where they said, look man, Shane
Waldron didn't hold everyone accountable. He was putting in things
that are very difficult for a young quarterback and they
never changed, never showed a willing willingness to adapt, and
(01:23:06):
a just you elevate Thomas Brown. Thomas Brown is more direct,
more to the point, hoose guys accountable and his voice.
Speaker 4 (01:23:14):
Even drowned out that of Matt Eberflus.
Speaker 5 (01:23:16):
So when you have a coach who refuses to acknowledge
his shortcomings and take accountability and he makes mistakes where
the team feels like as players, we've done everything to
put ourselves in a position to win. But our coach
is costing us games. There's no coming back from that.
So I'm sure the voices made its way upstairs, and
(01:23:38):
that's why Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles didn't have a
choice but to move on from Matt Eberflus.
Speaker 1 (01:23:43):
We'll see how.
Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
Long you know? You know, the dagga was.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
The dagga was when Bucky's daughter says, what the hell
is he doing?
Speaker 5 (01:23:49):
That was right like, we're sitting there, we're just about
to eat, and we're looking at the game, and the
cast ensues. She's in the football now because she's played
flag football, so she has a great understanding of what's
going on, and so she's looking like, okay, two minute situation,
thirty seconds left, they got a time out, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:24:09):
Tick to kill it?
Speaker 5 (01:24:13):
Williams throws up a Heil Mary and she's like, wait minute,
aren't they down just three? They just need a field goal? Yes, yes, babe,
they just they just need a field goal to tie.
Speaker 4 (01:24:23):
Well, why did they throw it up in the thing?
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:24:26):
Why did he call the time out when everyone has
their hands their palms turned up.
Speaker 4 (01:24:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:24:31):
Why that's the signal, the universal signal like coach, we
don't know what we're doing.
Speaker 4 (01:24:36):
Called the timeout.
Speaker 5 (01:24:37):
So to me, when you have a mess up like
that on a major stage, because Mike we talked about,
everyone is eating dinner, everyone is circled around the TV.
You have the casuals looking like.
Speaker 4 (01:24:47):
Hey, what's going on? Like what why doesn't he there's
no coming back from that.
Speaker 10 (01:24:53):
Well, the beauty of it is there's no nuance to
it either, you know, for everybody to jump on board,
and every network then had their A list, studio crews
ready to go right, there's no all right, we gotta
go back and check the all twenty two check that. No,
this is simple football, which as we see time and
time again, Fellas gets botched how many times every Sunday
(01:25:13):
in terms of down distance, preparation, everything, two minute drills.
But yeah, Jalen Johnson, Keenan Allen, we did everything we
could as players just go on down the line. I
would I theorize this as well. George McCaskey. The last
couple of weeks, even going back to that game against
the Jaguars, Bucky, he's been seene in a lot of tailgates,
and hanging out trying to be every man. I'm gonna
(01:25:35):
guarantee he gave somebody his phone number. One of those
fans got his phone number, and that was the end
of it, because then it was an endless barrage.
Speaker 1 (01:25:43):
Of what the hell are we doing? What are we doing?
Speaker 10 (01:25:45):
By the way, I also the full circle thing, Andy,
since you brought up the hail Mary, going back to
that Washington game, Notice how Caleb's last second desperation he
didn't get to the end zone either, just kind of
throwing it out from you.
Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
I will say this, though, I don't want to see
anybody on any profession, on any level, get fired. I
don't call for it on the air. I don't want
to see it happen because it's disgusting. It's painful, it
is it's embarrassing, especially in a visual situation like that,
you know, professional coach. But what I dislike more than
anything else, that as soon as that game ended, social
(01:26:22):
media blew up he should be fired now. And then
you got these blow hard media people saying I called it,
I knew he coult fired. That makes me sick. And
you notice a lot of time you probably saw that
in Chicago.
Speaker 2 (01:26:34):
You probably.
Speaker 10 (01:26:35):
Well, but I'll go back to it even before the season. Andy,
Like again, as much as there may be a promo
talking about me getting people fired, I forget the context
thereof I generally don't. But when the you know, the
writing's on the wall and you're just talking about the organization,
and look, they're like the Cowboys, the Jets, et cetera.
Until there's really a change at at the ownership level,
(01:26:58):
what's really substance league gonna change? Right, as much as
we point to Eberflus, I don't know, an offensive lineman
or two instead of roma duns, they might have helped
the young quarterback out. We said it at the time,
We say it again now. So Ryan Poles, for the
way some of this roster has been constructed, I think
he's gotten a free pass because they went and they
(01:27:18):
got all the shiny toys, so it looked good to folks.
But in the guts, that's where they've been getting beat.
And that defense since that Washington game. You can't tell
me they didn't quit on that guy to some level.
Speaker 5 (01:27:30):
Yeah, yeah, I mean there's something to that, you know
what I'm saying, Like in terms of just not being
able to do it. Bears aren't built the right way.
They did go for the shiny parts. And let look,
there's going to be a conversation that needs to be
had about Kayla Williams. We don't have to have it today,
but I'm gonna say this might be what they call
(01:27:53):
kind of like mob thinking. For so long, for two years,
we were peppered at Kayla Williams is a transcend in
talent and he's Pat mahone.
Speaker 4 (01:28:00):
He's dead. He's that and what you're seeing as a player,
that's not that he's a good player. He's a good prospect.
Speaker 5 (01:28:06):
I feel like maybe sometimes media types broadcasts we built
him up to be something that he's not, and so
our expectation is that he is being held back by coaches,
which may be true. But in that moment, when I'm
looking at Andy and Mike Keathy, Williams should be aware
of the time score situation. He should he shouldn't. He
(01:28:29):
should know that, Hey man, you know what, we only
need a field goal to win. I don't need to
drun this all down and then my last throat doesn't
need to be a heave that doesn't go into the
end zone. I just need I just need to think
like we're blaming Matt Iberflish, and he does deserve some blame,
but at some point, your best players are supposed to
bail you out of some of those situations. I feel
(01:28:50):
like he has been unscathed for his poor performance at
times throughout the year.
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
And he should be a leader.
Speaker 3 (01:28:56):
And I said this way back, and you kind of
chastised me when I said this when he was at
usc and after a game he went up to the
stands and was crying with his mom and dad. Remember
he started to cry, say, well, I don't know he's
a leader. If I'm a drafting the guy, I don't
know if I want a guy to be that kind
of a leader. You got you gotta suck it up.
You're a leader, you're the face of the team, you're
the quarterback. And when he started crying after that game,
(01:29:17):
I understand it's tough. You don't want to lose. But
it was a bad look. That's all I'm saying. It
was a bad look. Yeah, just in the moment.
Speaker 10 (01:29:23):
And I'm glad we come to you know, some common
sense and a commonplace here is that if you're gonna
expect it's not just about the physicality right. Your quarterback
is supposed to be your guy, supposed to be your leader.
By the way, that's why you also brought in Keenan
Allen these guys so as much as he can say, hey,
we did everything we wanted.
Speaker 1 (01:29:41):
I don't know you're a leader. No, you very easily
could have done something there.
Speaker 5 (01:29:47):
So that's that's the other thing in like I tweeted that,
like I mean, like, look, players also are aware.
Speaker 4 (01:29:54):
And here's what I'll say about DJ Moore and Keithan Allen.
Speaker 5 (01:29:57):
Some things that I don't like about the Bears team
whine and a lot of crime behind the scenes, a
lot of showing up with the coaches behind the stuff,
bad body language, walking off plays while plays.
Speaker 4 (01:30:07):
Are going on.
Speaker 5 (01:30:08):
Like whoever the new coach is, I hope the first
thing he does is get all those players in line,
because to me, they've been able to kind of like
play both sides like, oh, our coach isn't great while
without acknowledging their own shortcomings and failures. I hope someone
holds them accountable to their performance and the way that
they act on the field.
Speaker 1 (01:30:27):
Nicely done.
Speaker 10 (01:30:28):
Speaking of shortcomings and failings, No, I'm not going to
give you well, I was looking.
Speaker 2 (01:30:36):
Shortcomings. I'm very you know what I'm saying now.
Speaker 1 (01:30:39):
I got nothing but love for you. You're a legend.
Speaker 10 (01:30:41):
And Andy Furman FSR at Bucky Brooks you see and
read and everything he's got going on NFL at dot Com,
NFL Network. Andy's got his columns and his appearances. All
of that you can find in his Twitter verse as well. Gentlemen,
the Ryan Dade discussion. I'm sure you guys had a
little bit this morning, but I'm new to this show.
This morning in the audience, uh forever revolving forty four
(01:31:03):
and one against the rest of the Big ten, one
in four against Michigan in what seemed like, you know,
you never you know, the old throw the throw the
records out.
Speaker 1 (01:31:13):
In this one.
Speaker 10 (01:31:14):
This is one that they weren't supposed to right, this
is one that was supposed to be there. Meanwhile, you're
catching strays from Syracuse, New York where Kyle McCord goes
and up ends Miami on Oh they forgot their quarterback?
Next level stuff? Does he have to win the whole
damn thing to keep his job this time around?
Speaker 1 (01:31:36):
Andy Ferman, Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:31:38):
You know, it's a different animal. College football is a
different animals. Why do I say that because I don't
think there's gonna be a decision by the athletic departments,
to be a decision by the alums, because right now
they're gonna say, hey, we've forked out millions of dollars
for you for nil. We're not giving you any more
unless he's gone. That's the bottom line, and that the
old days. I'm saying, the old days he used to
(01:32:00):
be the athletic there. They will reevaluate the job that
the coach has done and say, look, you know we're
moving on. We're going in a different direction. This guy
has won sixty and lost ten, the second best twenty
percentage in Ohio State history this year ten and two.
I know they lost to Oregon. They beat number three
Pence State. It's unbelievable. Wood he Hayes. I mentioned this
early on wood He Hayes coach twenty eight years at
(01:32:21):
Ohio State. He lost eleven times to Michigan. He did
win sixteen and he tied one. Okay, did anybody have
a call for his head in Columbus?
Speaker 1 (01:32:29):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:32:31):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (01:32:32):
Okay, the buck guys are in the championship playoffs, Okay,
and right now.
Speaker 2 (01:32:37):
I'm going to root for them.
Speaker 3 (01:32:38):
I'm going to root for them because I feel bad
for Ryan Day that he has to defend himself. Well,
people are going to defend him for what he has accomplished.
It's amazing what he's accomplished. And to me, I understand
it's a great place to coach. But if I'm a
possibility of a coaching coming in there, why would I
want that pressure cooker?
Speaker 2 (01:32:56):
Why would I want to go there? I can win
every game except Michigan. I'm gonna lose my job. Doesn't
make any sense.
Speaker 5 (01:33:03):
Here's what I'll say about Ryan Day. I think Ryan
Day would benefit from just being authentic as a coach.
I think Ryan Day's biggest issue is he's.
Speaker 4 (01:33:10):
Trying to be something that he's not.
Speaker 5 (01:33:12):
Like, if you're not a tough guy, don't play or
pretend to be a tough guy. And I think sometimes
he puts on an air about him that is not authentic.
And I think his team takes on the personality of
the coach, and so they're not a rough and tough team.
The thing that we know about Michigan, and here's what
has happened over the last four years when Michigan has
(01:33:32):
beating them, they believe they can out physical and sock
Ohio State in the mouth.
Speaker 4 (01:33:38):
There was a confidence that Sharon Moore had.
Speaker 5 (01:33:40):
There's a confidence that even Charles Wilson had in the pregame,
like just kind of feel that they're going to be
okay and until Ohio State just kind of man's up
and becomes a physical team without like all the other stuff, right,
just lock in, let's play, let's run the ball, Let's
eliminate all the theatatricks and play. They won't beat them
(01:34:03):
because right now Michigan feels like we own them in
that regardless of the record, we can beat them.
Speaker 4 (01:34:08):
And it's gonna be tough for Ohio State.
Speaker 5 (01:34:10):
To get past the mentality he deserves to stay on
his job because he's too good knocking off everybody else.
He has to figure out a way to crack the
code when it comes to Michigan.
Speaker 3 (01:34:18):
Well, you should beat them. I think they did beat
them in the flag fighting thing after the game.
Speaker 4 (01:34:22):
I think that's another thing that's stupid.
Speaker 5 (01:34:25):
And for him to condone that and to say that
like he should have been right after that, like, hey, look,
we lost the game on the field.
Speaker 4 (01:34:32):
There's no excuse for our behavior to be that.
Speaker 5 (01:34:34):
Regardless of what Michigan does, they shouldn't put the look.
I'll say Michigan's wrong too, because I think it's disrespectful
when you do that. Right, both sides like just get out,
enjoy the win, but like that part of it, you're
asking for a fight to happen. I know we're gonna
see legislation to get all that stuff out because we
saw it in that game Florida Florida State game.
Speaker 4 (01:34:54):
We saw it at North Carolina and ce State. Too
many incidents. Take your flag elsewhere.
Speaker 10 (01:35:00):
And stick it somewhere else wherever you can add an
element of silliness. We you know, life finds a way
stealing from gold Boom in the wonderful world of Jurassic
Park all those years ago. But yeah, that's where I
want to go next because I got to take a
little bit of positivity for it, for all the silliness
that was. We had some great sound bites that came
out of it, but I'll sell it and tell you this.
(01:35:23):
It just shows that well, regular season is not quite
dead yet. We'll get into that next as we continue.
It's Fox Football Sunday. That's Andy Furman, that's Bucky Brooks.

Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
Out the air. My weekly imploring of you.
Speaker 10 (01:36:07):
You were sitting around with family, you know he could
just grab their phones and said, hey, I just gave
you your Christmas gift. Not only am I here, and
I gave you the gift of my time. You take
a selfie, you say, I give you a selfie, and
I downloaded the iHeartRadio app to make your life even better.
That's what it's all about. Fox Football Sunday. Mike Carmon
alongside Andy Furman and Andy Furmis FSR and Bucky Brooks
(01:36:29):
at Bucky Brooks as we continue here on a beautiful
Fox Football Sunday. Yeah, I heard it summed up beautifully
by a Bears fan even before last Thursday's debacle against
the Lions. Called into the score in Chicago. As you know,
I got to get the local react and the guy
just said, I'm not even mad, pause pause, I'm just tired.
(01:36:54):
Summed it up nicely as it were. It's like, look,
my old rule of thumb, guys, if you're gonna fail,
fails spectacularly and across college football. We watched that a
bunch yesterday. But I gotta say, as much as we
were doing a lot of handwringing about flags and pitchforks
and all sorts of other things coming out of these
rivalry games, it was nice to see that the at
(01:37:16):
least for a day now, with some ugliness involved fights,
maybe in Ohio state player or two actually get suspended
for their first playoff game because you know they're not
playing in the Big Ten title game. Is that you
actually saw teams where there was still a bit of care,
whereas everybody was telling me in the final weeks of
the season. Ah, it wasn't gonna matter if you weren't
(01:37:39):
playing for the playoffs. It wasn't going to matter. And
everybody's gonna stand down, Like no, there's still some school
pride left in there. There's still some fight now again.
You know, we made the joke about Ohio State. Would
have been nice if they showed some of that toughness,
you know, getting out out gained on the ground by
one hundred yards before that, that whole fiasco. But you know,
(01:38:01):
to just say that college football still had some juice
in the final weekend of the regular season, it's pretty
nice thing, Bucky.
Speaker 4 (01:38:08):
It is a nice thing.
Speaker 5 (01:38:09):
And what has showed us and one of the reasons
why we all love college football is it does matter
on a different level than it matters in the NFL.
When you get to these rivalry situations like it's I
don't say it's to the death.
Speaker 4 (01:38:23):
But it's to the death.
Speaker 5 (01:38:25):
And when you put them all in the last weekend,
I mean, we saw some weird stuff happens, but that's
it's so crazy how that can happen a robbery game,
but it's personal and it extends beyond that. And I
was given Andy a hard time about the Ohio State
Michigan thing.
Speaker 4 (01:38:39):
But having witnessed that up close and personal.
Speaker 5 (01:38:41):
It is very much like a hate situation that extends
beyond like, oh, no, that's our rival. Like no, they
legitimately hate each other and it comes out and.
Speaker 4 (01:38:52):
They play to it.
Speaker 5 (01:38:53):
And I can appreciate, like some of the testiness and
combativeness that exists between the two disiance. But yeah, rivalry
brings out something different that we normally don't see each
and every week in college football.
Speaker 3 (01:39:08):
I have a different take on that, I really do,
and I'm glad Bucket used to turn personal personal produ
I'll tell you why. It's a different animal right now.
It's a lot like the NFL. What do I mean
by that? They're playing in the NIL and they're not
gonna give up. These players aren't gonna quit. You know
why they want to look good on tape because they
may go into the portal. They may go into the portals. Yeah,
you may be playing on a team that has no
(01:39:28):
chance whatsoever to get into the final twelve in the
college football player, but you got a chance maybe to
go to another school. I'm seeing kickers on various teams
right now that go from like Arkansas Little Rock to
major college players. I mean, come on, that's what it's
all about, right But it's about the portal right now.
I'm not gonna quit. Why should I quit? I got
an opportunity to a make money be going to portal
(01:39:51):
and see go to a big time school.
Speaker 10 (01:39:53):
That's what it's all about right now. Wherever mind motivation
is a win, right Bucky?
Speaker 4 (01:39:58):
Yeah it is.
Speaker 5 (01:39:59):
But you also seeing the what we call the minor
league situation, right the feeder system.
Speaker 4 (01:40:04):
So hey, why don't you go down there to that.
Speaker 5 (01:40:06):
Little school, you work on your game, and then we
the arrogant big school would be.
Speaker 4 (01:40:10):
Like, oh, look at you, look at how you developed.
Speaker 5 (01:40:12):
Hey, coach, we'll take it from here. We'll take little Johnny.
You're a player, We'll take.
Speaker 4 (01:40:17):
Him right now.
Speaker 5 (01:40:18):
That's the challenge, and that's I mean, it's very It
has become very transactional when it comes to relationships between
players and coaches and those things.
Speaker 2 (01:40:28):
The Michigan kidder came for some minor league school, didn't.
Speaker 10 (01:40:30):
He Well, but we've had a lot, I mean, it's
been there forever. It's now just magnified right now. Now,
we just put a dollar amount to it. That we
know of, as opposed to undisclosed meeting in back alley
with a handshake and everything else.
Speaker 1 (01:40:45):
I want to call attention.
Speaker 10 (01:40:46):
Great quote from Mullings from Michigan on the sideline, kind
of talking summarizing what was going on at the end
of the day.
Speaker 1 (01:40:54):
You know, some people gotta they gotta learn how to lose. Man,
You can't.
Speaker 9 (01:40:57):
Can't be fighting and stuff just because he lost the game.
Speaker 4 (01:40:59):
You know all that, and we had sixty minutes. We
have four quarters to do all that fighting.
Speaker 1 (01:41:04):
There you go, sums it up, you know, I'll get
it between the white lines.
Speaker 5 (01:41:07):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (01:41:08):
I mean it was appropriate that there was a WWE
premium event called war Games last night.
Speaker 3 (01:41:13):
And it was probably his friend that had the Michigan
flag that's stuck it in the ground.
Speaker 2 (01:41:17):
Anyway, Hey, I want to give.
Speaker 10 (01:41:18):
Jason Evant some credit, by the way, doing some sideline work. Yeah,
that's Jason Evon, a guy you may have drafted in
your fantasy league years ago. When he got selected and
he was playing with the Eagles, former Michigan Wolverine was
on the sideline. He was the guy that was wrestling
the flag away from those Ohio State players.
Speaker 5 (01:41:36):
Really so it's so it's so great. Like, so you
see that flag situation. You see Mike Norville from Florida,
Florida State, the Florida State coach.
Speaker 4 (01:41:46):
Picks up the Florida flag.
Speaker 1 (01:41:48):
Yeah, he throws it to the other side.
Speaker 4 (01:41:50):
They've got frustration, I mean, just a lot of it.
Speaker 5 (01:41:54):
But I do love the subtle troll by the by
the Michigan player, like, hey, you need to learn how
to lose better.
Speaker 10 (01:42:00):
You're talking about a splashy but you had but you
had that graphic during during the telecast, and look for
some of these guys. I think it's it's now performative
theater in the in the booth, a little bit more
than it needs to be.
Speaker 1 (01:42:14):
But we'll push that aside for the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:42:16):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (01:42:17):
The graphic that they put up of all the Ohio
State guys that had won against Michigan and then they
name checked every one of them, It's like, let's go through.
Speaker 1 (01:42:24):
It's like, what is this an in memoriam?
Speaker 10 (01:42:27):
Like obviously it's in the game whatever, But then all
those guys, well they take another l's thought this the
stake he certainly did Oklahoma.
Speaker 4 (01:42:40):
It is, yeah, it is, it is.
Speaker 5 (01:42:41):
Baker's fault because that win they put the Oklahoma flag
right in the middle of the thing. The ultimate troll
guy but troll job. But as a wrestling fan, everyone
loves a heel. Yes, we all love a bit of
the heel. And like, here's the thing that is tough
for me, right because on one side, I'm like sportsman,
you shake hands or whatever. But there's another part of
(01:43:02):
me and it's like, you know, when the right yeah
you kind of you kind of you know the w
W E and me what.
Speaker 4 (01:43:12):
Yeah, stick your chest. I get a little chesty and
let them know. Well.
Speaker 10 (01:43:14):
Also, it's a week where I mean we're talking Gladiator too.
Is at the box office? I heard the Moana question earlier.
You also could have gone and seen Denzel and maybe
you channeled the original. Are you not entertained? Is this
not why you were here? You came for violence, We
gave you violence.
Speaker 3 (01:43:32):
This is gonna be called the Baker Mayfield rule. Now, yeah,
bring a flag. You don't know how to bring a
flag anymore.
Speaker 10 (01:43:37):
I think everybody's just gonna be forced to do the
Iowa wave from each sideline, or there will be some
random barrier that comes up in the final five seconds.
Speaker 1 (01:43:46):
Again, owing to the original.
Speaker 10 (01:43:47):
Gladiator where they'd let those tigers free in the coliseum.
Speaker 1 (01:43:52):
They're chained of course. Whatever else did you see Gladiator
to there? I haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 10 (01:43:58):
Tried to get the family out of his visiting my
mom and pop down in Florida High Mom, hih, dad,
if you're listening, try tried to coax them. But we
we sat and watched a lot of football and hockey.
My dad's really gravitated towards hockey.
Speaker 2 (01:44:11):
Really gotcha.
Speaker 5 (01:44:15):
I like, I'm more of a playoff hockey guy. But
I like the new overtime rules. They open it up
and stuff like that, like.
Speaker 10 (01:44:21):
As opposed to the dopey way we do overtime and
everything else. As much as I love that Georgia game
that was crazy time, I know why I hate the
two point conversion to finish it right. You know, me
and my daughter playing you know, competitive soccer. There's nothing
worse than leaving your heart on the line and then
it's like, all right, let's go to penalty cakes like
doing pks.
Speaker 4 (01:44:42):
You just want to play forever, Yes, I want to
play forever.
Speaker 3 (01:44:45):
Take the clock off, damn right, next goal win, sudden death,
sudden that is.
Speaker 1 (01:44:49):
Right there you go. We wait, we ran the gamut.
Speaker 10 (01:44:52):
As we run through here, it's Fox Football Sunday on
a beautiful week thirteen in the National Football League. No
team's on by already four gas in the book. Perhaps
if you're one of those teams that's already played, you've
got a giant to do list, you know, because you
can start getting the holiday holiday holiday decorations out and
all that stuff. But we do have games still to play.
(01:45:12):
You guys have laid out a number of them. Let's
start picking away at the rest of them. Rams at Sea,
taking away at the rest of the carcass to go
to the full Thanksgiving metaphor, as it were. Rams two
and a half point favorite time on the road at
New Orleans forty nine is your total. You've got back
to back wins, you know, coaching chain shuffle it up
(01:45:33):
in deal. They ended that seven game winning or losing streak.
I should say coming off a bye week is New
Orleans as well. They're mediocre at best and both overall
statistics for the Rams you're looking at giving up they're
only rushing for ninety five yards a game. For Kyron Williams,
as much as he's had of knows for the end zone.
They haven't been able to sustain a run all year
(01:45:54):
but four and two since thereby losers of two of
three and they give up a ton on the ground.
So maybe one of those days where you got to
combine Kamara slash Taysom Hill. Chaos kind of situation for
you here. Either way, Rams still trying to fight in
what is a very odd NFCUS Bucky Brooks, I'll start
with you.
Speaker 5 (01:46:14):
Let's go to Rams and we can go to Rams
because this is look, it is time.
Speaker 4 (01:46:19):
The division is still within reach. They need to play better.
Speaker 5 (01:46:22):
Matthew Stafford has to put on this cape and you
need those guys on the perimeter to make it happen.
Speaker 4 (01:46:26):
Cup Pukinakua.
Speaker 5 (01:46:27):
They got to get the run game going because defensively
they're not able to hold people down. They have to
control the game with the offense. But the offense is
good enough to get it done against the Saints.
Speaker 3 (01:46:38):
You know on GLEG you mentioned Colin Williams because he
ran well against the Eagles last week for the Rams.
If he could get that done today and he had
a couple of big runs and that when he does that,
I think he sets up that play action pass and
he gives some room for the receivers for the Rams
to work with Matthew Stafford. So I just think there
are better players on the Rams. It's hard to believe
(01:46:59):
that five and six, but they've been hit with injuries.
I just think the Rams win. I think the Rams
win pretty handily today against the Saints.
Speaker 10 (01:47:05):
Remember you can always like guys runs, run the ball
when you're down thirty points.
Speaker 2 (01:47:09):
Yeah, you're right, You're right like the Rams, like the Rams.
Speaker 4 (01:47:12):
Yes, and he's going for a blowouty.
Speaker 1 (01:47:14):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (01:47:16):
As I said, let's say blow it that double digit win?
Is it blowout?
Speaker 5 (01:47:19):
Hey?
Speaker 1 (01:47:19):
That's here, You're two and a half on the road.
Speaker 4 (01:47:22):
Absolutely, Andy, and Andy's call him blowouts.
Speaker 1 (01:47:26):
I dig that. Let's see if he's got a couple
of more in him.
Speaker 2 (01:47:28):
Yeah, Eagles and Ravens. Hey that for mention Eagles.
Speaker 10 (01:47:31):
Here we go that winners thirty seven to twenty in
that game against the Rams. Sakuon Barkley making his push,
everybody jumping on board that MVP talk and the bandwagon. Well,
you're looking at a couple of teams that are been
very good against the Ron Baltimore giving up just seventy
eight yards per game, Philly giving up just ninety nine.
That's first and seventh respectively for Philly. A couple of injuries,
(01:47:54):
obviously the Brandon Graham injury. Curious to see how much
that stings them. Darius Slay also left their last game,
so keeping an eye, but seven straight wins since their
bye week, twenty three or points are fewer allowed in
each of those. Six of the seven actually at twenty
or fewer for the Ravens, winners of three of five
(01:48:14):
losses against Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Take that for what it is.
Second highest scoring offense in the game is Baltimore at
thirty points per Philadelphia again seventh twenty six point nine.
Speaker 1 (01:48:27):
This one is a Baltimore three point favorite.
Speaker 10 (01:48:30):
Fifty one, gentlemen, your total, So fantasy owners, rejoice, Andy Furman,
who's winning this game?
Speaker 3 (01:48:36):
You know I'm gleg you mentioned all the stats because
I'm throwing them out. The win though right now, because
this is must see TV. This is gonna be the
best game of the day, and this basically is Derek
Henry against Sekuon Barkley, and it's gonna be clock management,
clock controlling and controlling the football, a constant dose of
running the football. Whoever can control the football more and
longer will win this game. And I gotta believe it's
gonna be Saquon Barkley in the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 1 (01:49:00):
Mm hmm, you like that going on the road.
Speaker 4 (01:49:04):
Yeah, A short trip you Yeah, short trip to me.
Speaker 5 (01:49:09):
I think this is a big game, a bigger game
for Baltimore than Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (01:49:13):
They have to prove.
Speaker 5 (01:49:14):
That they can win these big games and kind of
do it in impressive fashion. Yes, they got a big
win against the Charges, but to me, this is one
of the way they have to make a statement game,
and Lamar Jackson has to make a statement.
Speaker 4 (01:49:25):
He is going to win the MVP. But it's kind
of like, hu hum, I need to see one.
Speaker 5 (01:49:29):
Of those magical games from him. I'm gonna go with
Baltimore in this matchup.
Speaker 10 (01:49:33):
It's a curiosity because you both kind of alluded to
and Andy you went to it specifically in terms of
clock control and coaching and everything else. Like both of
these guys are going to be a little i don't know,
reckless and lou stepping in the final minutes in games.
Speaker 3 (01:49:49):
But remember the Eagles have the NFL's top total defense.
And that's that's gonna be a big factor, controlling the
football with great defense.
Speaker 2 (01:49:55):
He's gotta beat the Eagles today.
Speaker 1 (01:49:57):
There you go, he's got it all set up.
Speaker 2 (01:50:00):
It's a short trip. I think they go by train.
I think they take Amtrak all aboard America.
Speaker 4 (01:50:05):
What's that? I think that that's the Excella, the Excela
where you can go.
Speaker 2 (01:50:09):
Yes, yeh see.
Speaker 1 (01:50:11):
Now we're all learning stuff about.
Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
The Cardinal from Cincinnati to Chicago.
Speaker 10 (01:50:15):
Here you oh, Cardinal full dining car. Do you get
someone to come through with the cart like you're on
the dog boards express?
Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
I think I think on those things though, you just
get sandwiches and stuff.
Speaker 10 (01:50:27):
Though, right, we got someone bringing carting station and everything there?
Speaker 1 (01:50:32):
And are you all suited up to I can.
Speaker 2 (01:50:36):
Set open the bar, open bar.
Speaker 4 (01:50:38):
Yeah, you don't get a hot meal on the on
those trains.
Speaker 1 (01:50:42):
Wow, this just escalated quickly here, Bucky.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (01:50:45):
I just thought, yeah, I think, wow, and some snacks.
I thought, you get.
Speaker 3 (01:50:53):
Whatever you Want's the greatest there really is. You got
the windows, see the country passing by.
Speaker 10 (01:51:00):
There you go life watching the world go by.
Speaker 1 (01:51:03):
I have so many one liners that I can run.
Speaker 10 (01:51:05):
My head's gonna explode and Andy Ferman FSR where you
find him on Twitter. There's Bucky at Bucky Brooks find
me over at Zwollodome. A couple more games, Let to
go and our analysis and breakdown of what is the
remainder of Week thirteen of your National Football League season.
Stick with us here from the Tirac dot com studios.
It's Fox Football Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:51:25):
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 10 (01:51:27):
It's Fox Football Sunday Live from the Tirerac dot com studios.
Mike Carmen alongside Bucky Brooks and Andy Furman. Appreciate the guys.
Appreciate y'all being up with us. Mark and Shay making
a sound so pretty this morning, Week thirteen of your
National FOOTBA League season. We already have action in the
Premier League going on, Chelsea with a one nil lead
(01:51:48):
just fifteen minutes into that one. So I've got soccer
heading into a full slate of NFL actions. So much
going on, folks paying attention to the debacles of big
time programs in the National Basket Ball Association. College basketball
has been fun and then yesterday obviously was fight night
across college football. But we get back into the fun
(01:52:09):
of the NFL. Does one team have a fight left
in him? Forty nine ers at Bill We're gonna find
out in short order Sunday Night football. Lots of snow,
twenty bucks, hot chocolate, and a hearty thank you is
what you get if you want to go shovel snow
there in Buffalo, Andy, you sign it up for that.
Speaker 1 (01:52:26):
I think I got you. Gotta up the offer.
Speaker 2 (01:52:28):
For meno my own house. What would show a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:52:30):
No, that's just it.
Speaker 1 (01:52:32):
Let's let's deploy some snowblowers and some able bodied teams.
Speaker 2 (01:52:35):
Well, they got five feet of snow in Buffalo, they said,
don't they.
Speaker 1 (01:52:38):
Yeah, it's something insane like that.
Speaker 10 (01:52:39):
Forty four and a half is the total Buffalo six
point favorites party back in this one back to back
losses to take them under five hundred. You've got Josh
Allen congratulation on getting engaged. Hailey Steinfeld, the other superstar
in the relationship with a quarterback. Most folks don't remember.
She was in Hawkeye. She was also in Pitch Perfect.
(01:53:01):
I think true. Yeah, one of those. Now you're looking
at the Bills defense that I think has been better
than many realize because look It's all about the offense
of what they're doing, because you know, now Brady's name
starts making the rounds for is he a head coach possibility.
We'll get into all of that next hour with Bucky
Brooks six straight wins after there before thereby thirty thirty
(01:53:23):
or more points and five straight there Josh Allen just
has one three hundred yard game on the year.
Speaker 1 (01:53:28):
Gentlemen, as we roll through, but.
Speaker 10 (01:53:30):
San Francisco, last ditch effort, last Dan, can they plan
a flag in Buffalo?
Speaker 1 (01:53:34):
Andy?
Speaker 3 (01:53:35):
You know, I will tell you this much. It's kind
of a shame because I don't think we really know
how good the forty nine ers would have been without
those impact players getting injured all year long. Really Christian
McCaffrey when he missed eight games. Hopefully brock Party Place
today it plays healthily.
Speaker 2 (01:53:48):
I mean we know that.
Speaker 3 (01:53:49):
But you know Buffalo right now. They got the bye
week last week, so I got some rest after a
big win over the Chiefs, which gives them some momentum push,
which I don't know if they really needed because they're
not right now. And it really forty nine as were
the team that most people thought would be back in
the Super Bowl this year. You know now they're clinging
on just to make the playoffs. I think the Bills
(01:54:10):
are going to win. The Bills are healthy, The Bills
are better right now, and you know, they're playing together,
and they're playing football defensively and offensively, both sides of
the football. And you know what, people don't mention this.
I think the Bills are a better team now without
Stefan Diggs. I think he was a problem.
Speaker 10 (01:54:25):
I think all the Bills players made sure to let
us know that, didn't they Bucky.
Speaker 5 (01:54:29):
They did a little addition by subtraction, as has been
told to me. Here's what I'll say about San Francisco
forty nine ers. I'm not surprised that they're struggling. You
can see signs of this coming one whenever you lose
the Super Bowl. The way that they lost.
Speaker 4 (01:54:42):
The Super Bowl hangover is hard to shake.
Speaker 5 (01:54:45):
Secondly, over the course of the off season, everybody had
their hand at It reminded me of playing monopoly, like
everyone's sticking their hand out of a You got to
pay the man. So you had you had Brennan, You're
pouting and wining for money. You had Christian McCaffrey getting
his money. Trent Williams, it's hard when everybody.
Speaker 4 (01:55:04):
Is not fully connected.
Speaker 5 (01:55:05):
Yes, you want to see everyone get paid, but when
they were missing parts of camp and not being there
and all this other stuff, the chemistry and the connectivity
was not right, and it's hard to go to the
Super Bowl back to back. I just didn't feel like
they had the same focus when it came to it.
And oh, by the way, I think people need to
look and see. They got rid of Steve Wilkes, the
defensive coordinated, because he was to blame for all of
(01:55:28):
their woes. Their defense is not the same. It's not
even close to what it was a year ago, and
it's certainly not at the level that it.
Speaker 4 (01:55:36):
Has been when they had been able to rely on it.
There's a difference.
Speaker 3 (01:55:41):
So one of the furio is that even if the
guys were healthy, you don't think they would have been
back to the super Bowl now.
Speaker 4 (01:55:45):
I don't think so. I don't think they were in
the right frame of mind. And I think the moves
because with a knee jerk reaction to get rid of Wilkes,
the moves have not worked out.
Speaker 5 (01:55:53):
And let's be honest, the team is getting older, they're
nearing the.
Speaker 4 (01:55:57):
End of their run.
Speaker 5 (01:55:58):
It's been a great championship window. They would have to
reboot it though.
Speaker 10 (01:56:02):
Yeah, in the end, I can't stipulate out injuries because
with Christian McCaffrey, well, this is uh, it's unfortunate. It's
almost half expected though it wasn't it. I mean, how
many healthy seasons had you gotten out of him? Right,
last four? That's that's kind of what it is, right right,
So when he's got to be the base of everything,
(01:56:22):
gadgetry with with Deebo Samuel another guy looking to get
paid right, next level kind of stuff. So, yeah, all
those fractures certainly finding their way in. And then finally
Brown said Bronco, Hey, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:56:35):
The browns our gout.
Speaker 10 (01:56:37):
Shay can't find a decent pair of brown shorts. So
anybody that's got a line on something that you know,
a guy of his ilk and stature would wear, you
gotta let me know, Shay. You found one pair this
morning and it was sold out.
Speaker 8 (01:56:50):
Sold out.
Speaker 4 (01:56:50):
I was.
Speaker 7 (01:56:51):
I was on this website that has like cool sports
NFL gear and they had one Browns thing, well, they
had two Browns thing, one Browns thing that was cool,
which was the shorts that were sold out.
Speaker 3 (01:57:00):
So if you got they weren't sold out, nobody wants
to buy. And that's why didn't put him on there.
Oh wow, because you know what they say though in Cincinnati,
at least if it's brown, flush it down.
Speaker 8 (01:57:10):
Aren't you a Bengals?
Speaker 4 (01:57:11):
Oh my gosh, keep it clean, dope.
Speaker 1 (01:57:14):
That's what they're saying. That's kind of what he was
saying there.
Speaker 4 (01:57:17):
Friendly kid friendly.
Speaker 10 (01:57:18):
Yeah, it's a family show, there's no question about it. Hey,
By the way, tell the Bengals to either play some
defense or you know, don't give up the first two
weeks of a season.
Speaker 1 (01:57:28):
Every But you know.
Speaker 3 (01:57:29):
What Bucky says, true, they had their hands out too,
Jamar Chase, I mean that's a problem.
Speaker 1 (01:57:33):
T Higgins tell me that's not.
Speaker 4 (01:57:35):
Yeah, you know the differences. The difference is the Bengals
didn't pay them.
Speaker 5 (01:57:40):
So yeah, what I feel like you got like a
little silent protest going on amongst the White House right.
Speaker 10 (01:57:45):
Well, I don't know, Jamar Chase still putting up his
so hard to argue with what they're now. T Higgins
missing five games, I wouldn't say I'd be missing work.
Bob Denver six point favorites forty two. The total bo
Nicks of that offense, showing some twenty eight plus four
of their last six four and two in that stretch.
The tough losses to the Chiefs and to the Chargers.
(01:58:08):
Along the way, defense has played really good football. Vance
Joseph back on the sideline, probably as a head coach
question mark, We've been asking it for weeks. On the
other side, again owing to our guy Shay, who throws
his hands up in discuss going I wanted to beat Pittsburgh,
but I don't want him to win more games. So
what have we got three wins this year? Jaguars, Steelers,
(01:58:28):
and Ravens. So show up for rival rivalry week, I
guess is what it's all about. For the Browns. Bucky
will start with you.
Speaker 4 (01:58:37):
M Yeah, let's go to Browns. You know what they're
just feeling like Jamis Winston.
Speaker 1 (01:58:42):
I just feel like I want to hear.
Speaker 5 (01:58:44):
I kind of want to hear him eat some dubs
at the end. I just kind of feel I can't
wait to hear what the postgame stuff is just going
it for the Browns. I didn't think they went last Thursday.
They found a way to get it done.
Speaker 4 (01:58:54):
Positivity really.
Speaker 3 (01:58:56):
Sean Payton's though, man, Kimmy Bow, Knicks and Sunton. This
the new combination right now in the NFL is Sutton
to Nix, Nicks to Stton. That's what it's all about.
And honestly, you know, if the Browns could put some
pressure on Knicks with Miles Garrett, they got a shot.
Other than that, Sean Payton's demand, give him some Skyline chili.
Speaker 10 (01:59:13):
They're gonna win, nicely done. Still a long time since
that last Super Bowl. Again owing to past arguments about
guys and how great they are, they may or may
not be.
Speaker 11 (01:59:23):
I had Andy Ferman FSR. Where you find him in
the tuit of Hey, I call it what it is.
I want winners. He's Bucky Brooks. He'll stay with me
as we continue here. It's Fox Football Sunday. He's back
after five long years, finally making his return. What's that
all about?
Speaker 10 (01:59:41):
We'll tell you well, coming up here in a moment
as we broadcast live from the tirerac dot Com studios
tire act dot com.
Speaker 1 (01:59:46):
We'll help you get there.
Speaker 10 (01:59:47):
An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection,
over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirerac dot com the way
tyre buying should be. Thanks to our guy Andy Furman.
Fun last hour with him. We continue on Bucky Brooks
and myself. Bucky five years in the league, working with
the Jaguars, NFL dot Com, NFL Network, Foxsports dot Com,
(02:00:08):
and of course here with us each and every week.
In addition to coaching, mentoring all the things he's doing.
He might release a country album by the end of
the year.
Speaker 1 (02:00:16):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 4 (02:00:17):
Why not?
Speaker 5 (02:00:18):
Why not? Man, I'm good man. I love hearing my
guy Dan Bayer doing the update. That was That was fun.
It's been a minute since I've had a chance to
talk to him, but yeah, everything's good, Man, can't a play.
Speaker 1 (02:00:29):
We'll talk to Dan in a couple of minutes.
Speaker 10 (02:00:30):
He's there in at the news desk, fired up because look,
all you have to do is say Ohio State and
I think his ears are gonna per cup and he
looked at me. He's like, you're a jerk. But hey,
he's got an important game for the Seahawks. He doesn't
have time to rest on his laurels. Okay, Rivalry weekend
is in the books, but a lot of excitement to
(02:00:52):
come for the rankings. A little bit later on as
we go through and we get to those next playoff things.
But the turn of a long beloved player at the
collegiate level, right, one of those generational talents, because you know,
we get one of those every year. But but a
guy that was and flashed and then just like that
(02:01:13):
he was gone.
Speaker 1 (02:01:14):
Andrew Luck is back. And no not just the.
Speaker 10 (02:01:17):
Captain Andrew Luck Twitter account, although that comes back with it.
Andrew Luck is going to be the new GM of
the Stanford Cardinal. Now this is a curiosity at this
next level of NIL and restructuring college to college and
trying to figure out these type of scenarios. It's kind
(02:01:37):
of like the game coordinators in the National Football League,
you know, the guys that are supposed to be up
in the booth to tell you when to take a
time out, down, distance, execution, all of those things. Not
every team has gone down that road yet. Likewise for
the collegiate world, bringing in a guy with the acumen,
the history, the legend that is Andrew Luck, I mean
(02:01:57):
for the Stanford Cardinal program a huge boost. If nothing else,
you get the headline and the fact that this guy
gets to be on the recruiting trail for you.
Speaker 5 (02:02:09):
Yeah, really interesting scenario. Right, So Andrew Luck comes back
as general manager. He is in charge of overseeing all
things football. I didn't notice, but it really shows you
how quickly things can fall. They haven't won like more
than four games in the last six or seven.
Speaker 1 (02:02:26):
Yeah, it's been a miserable run.
Speaker 5 (02:02:28):
That is crazy, right, Remember how they were a power
you know what I'm saying, Like Jim Harbough, givets it,
hands it off to David Shaw.
Speaker 4 (02:02:36):
David Shaw takes it to another level.
Speaker 5 (02:02:38):
Andrew Luck and those guys are winning a ton of
games and then they fell off a cliff and.
Speaker 4 (02:02:43):
So back to back seasons right now, three and nine.
Not able to sustain the success.
Speaker 5 (02:02:47):
Andrew Luck is going to help and overseeing everything, helping
with the recruiting and all of that. Really interesting because
he goes back after he retires from the Colts, he
goes back to Stanford, gets his masters and you know
the pedigree is there because you remember his dad, Oliver
Luck Rant was in charge of it.
Speaker 4 (02:03:04):
Was it the ufl US one of one.
Speaker 1 (02:03:06):
Of those leagues USFL at some point, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:03:09):
Like one of those alternative leagues.
Speaker 5 (02:03:11):
And so he has that sports administrative thing in his background.
Speaker 4 (02:03:15):
It'd be interesting to see.
Speaker 1 (02:03:17):
He was the first the XL Yes, there you go.
Speaker 5 (02:03:22):
Yeah, it'd be interesting to see how he utilizes all
of his experience as a player to help Stanford get
back on track because they have they have fallen, that
mighty have fallen.
Speaker 10 (02:03:31):
Well, it is curious right in some of his comments immediately,
you know, kind of saying, look, we've changed the landscape.
Now we get to a twelve team playoff. Remember during
our run, we would have had multiple appearances right right,
look at the field there, so like they look, the
rules of engagement have changed in terms of you just
needed to be and you had to fight to the
top four. So between scheduling and everything else, it became
(02:03:54):
a all right, we can't lose the one. Now we're
having debates and fights about, you know, the merits of
three loss teams. We've talked about this a bunch in
the last few weeks. But you know, for Andrew Luck,
you're sitting there going, you know, is there a scenario
whereby we can be back to that periphery periphery right
where we're talking about the student athlete still student bar
(02:04:14):
of that. I think it at some institutions some others.
That's long long gone, and folks can lament what they want.
It's it's always been a slippery slope in terms of
that forever anyway. But for Andrew Luck, the gravitas, the
know how and certainly owing to the success that they had,
be curious to see this next iteration from a business perspective.
(02:04:37):
Can you motivate you know, Stanford alum right to get there.
Speaker 5 (02:04:43):
I don't know if you can. I don't know if
you can get the money there. But I think there's
a different way to be able to do it. I'm
looking at a school. Let's talk about the schools that
are comparable to Stanford, because I think it's important that
Stanford knows who they are and how they have to build.
Speaker 4 (02:04:55):
So we would say Notre Dame academically would be fishing.
Speaker 5 (02:04:58):
From the same pod as and for Northwestern Duke Rice,
those are typically the teams that fish from that same
high academic student athlete pond. Well, you look at Duke,
they're having success many ds is being able to do it.
Speaker 4 (02:05:12):
After Mike Elko got to start it, they've been able to.
Speaker 5 (02:05:15):
Do it with graduate transfers, guys who see the appeal
and having a graduate degree from Duke or whatever.
Speaker 4 (02:05:21):
Notre Dame is a little different because Notre Dame has the.
Speaker 5 (02:05:24):
Allure of the glorious past that they can bring students into.
Academic degree certainly has significance and weight. So SAMFI can
look at that, but can't quite duplicate it. Northwestern would
be an interesting case study in terms of how they
go about doing their.
Speaker 4 (02:05:40):
Thing in terms of Stanford.
Speaker 5 (02:05:41):
Do they look at themselves as peers or superior to Northwestern?
Speaker 4 (02:05:45):
And how does that impact it?
Speaker 5 (02:05:47):
But there's a path to victory, and if you're Andrew
Luck in those things. I do wonder if college football
will start being like the NCAA tournament, so they're teams
that hang banners for just making.
Speaker 4 (02:06:01):
The final four.
Speaker 5 (02:06:02):
The final four is a bit of the pinnacle, more
so than winning the national title. If your Stanford is
the goal to say, hey man, if we make the playoff,
that is good enough for us. We just need to
be one of the top twelve teams in the country
as opposed to the number one team in the country.
Can we build a team to do that? Well, I'm
looking at as some you do it. I'm looking at
(02:06:23):
Army being on the fringes of being able to do it.
So there's a way to do it is how are
they going to go about it with the without compromising
their academic reputation and standards.
Speaker 10 (02:06:34):
Yeah, I mean that is the curiosity because you would
have thought, to some level, if organized, those schools might
have had a first move or advantage.
Speaker 1 (02:06:42):
Right when the door is open to you know, good
have ben right, you know what I mean?
Speaker 10 (02:06:46):
Like the Northwestern Now you know there's these giant you know,
collective you know, pr press releases that are going out
saying hey, you know, you know we've we're now ready
to engage in this. I'm like, you had a couple
of years where you could have won, you could have
won the space right for the guys, And let's face it,
there's a little bit of a sliding scale in terms
of what you need to be.
Speaker 1 (02:07:08):
And it's not to dismiss them.
Speaker 10 (02:07:10):
They're all making the grade and getting through as evidenced
by the graduation rate. But we know there's you know,
creative courses of study along the way. But for Stanford
and for Northwestern held Notre Dame in did that matter,
Like the door's open to change the rules of engagement
and they didn't get to the table fast enough, or
(02:07:30):
you might have been able to steal things for a
year or two before this started to settle in. And
I mean, look, Michigan's just starting to get their stuff together.
Speaker 5 (02:07:39):
Yeah, so to me, so Michigan is another like high
academic public school, one of the best in the country
when it comes to it. They also have been late
to do the collectives in those things. And I understand
it like being from North Carolina, because North Carolina also
hasn't fully jumped on board. Like there's an I would
say an elitists. There's an arrogance about the weight of
the degree that you like, like you should want to
(02:08:01):
come to us, We shouldn't have to go to you.
But there's a happy median when it comes to that, right,
we talk about having kids, and we understand college and
the weight of education. I just think, like Northwestern, Stanford, Duke,
even Carolina, to be able to kind of tie yourself
to those brands, I think that would be appealing to
(02:08:24):
someone who has a forty year vision for what they
want their life to be. And I think you have
to sell that approach while also like dangling some money,
but also selling being associated and tied to those brands
are going to have lifelong benefits.
Speaker 10 (02:08:40):
Long term value because we certainly see it all the
way through and so many other programs where you recognize
that you saw a little bit of it bleed out
as we talked about it last hour with some of
the rivalry back and forth and what it means, you know,
wearing those uniforms. You know, I was talking to a
guy at the local trading card shop yesterday going through boxes,
(02:09:00):
and he was lamenting one of the most recent releases,
which is all collegiate players and autographs and whatever else,
all of those things in there. He goes, I don't
know what the appeal. I'm like, well, the guy from
Iowa isn't changing. Right If he played for your team,
even if for a year, you become a hero. Right
if back in the day, guys like just Settles and
(02:09:22):
you know Andre Woolridge and guys like that could have
gotten paid. They were like Tim Dwight would have been
worth five hundred million dollars, that's what he was worked
to the state of Iowa back in the day.
Speaker 1 (02:09:32):
Right.
Speaker 10 (02:09:32):
So you know those guys in their municipalities and in
those cities, you know, they've got a feeder line for
income forever, but trying to explain to him the appeal
for you know, and people's love of college. Right when
you get through to the pros, you know, guys you
like him as long as they're there, and as soon
(02:09:52):
as they move on, it's like, ah, he had a
good run, but he's you know, insert team X. Now,
of course, with college football and transfer rules, it's changing
because you're ripping cards and going, yeah, that guy's not
even at that school by the time they printed them,
and the'se moved on. But just that idea of you know,
that familiarity that I don't want to say ownership because
that always brings a bad connotation to it, but you
(02:10:16):
know to where you do have that built in base
that they're going to look after you. You know, you're
one of theirs forever. Again, that forty year plan you're
talking about with Northwestern that gets localized to a three
to five year plan with maybe a lifetime revenue stream.
Speaker 5 (02:10:32):
Yeah, I mean there's something to it. I just think
it's like you've got smart people in the room. You
should be able to figure those things out. And it's changing,
and I know college sports are changing.
Speaker 4 (02:10:40):
I can't.
Speaker 5 (02:10:41):
I mean, I won't to always say for the better,
but it's just a changing thing. And so you have
to figure out how do you want to toe that
line on amateurism and professionalism and those things. And I
think you have to, based on where you're at, kind
of figure out what are we comfortable with, what is
in line with our brand, and how can we preserve
of the brand while also being competitive enough to field
(02:11:04):
a team that makes people want to come to our institution.
Speaker 10 (02:11:07):
Yeah, so it'll be curious see Andrew Luck again citing
you know, the top twelve finishes during his time there
and thinking there might be a model to fight to
get back to that level before we step out and
then we'll come back and we'll get back into the NFL.
Here in a minute, Bucky, I'd be remiss. You mentioned
you're alma mater North Carolina. Mac Brown out not happy
about how things weigh ended there and now Arthur Smith
(02:11:30):
they're in Pittsburgh, the offensive coordinator. No, no, no, I'm not
going to the job there. Like, did he need to
make a statement? I thought that was kind of interesting
with all of this.
Speaker 5 (02:11:39):
Yeah, he had to make a statement just because UNC
had reached out like there have been overtures.
Speaker 4 (02:11:43):
People have been talking about it.
Speaker 5 (02:11:44):
Right, So they're two prominent nfl ocs who are Carolina lums,
Ben Johnson and Arthur Smith. When people had to ask
me about being Johns, I said, oh, yeah, he's well
out the price range.
Speaker 10 (02:11:55):
That's not happening, not even the collective can get together.
Speaker 4 (02:11:58):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:11:59):
Arthur's myth was a little more of a viable candidate
because he's been a head coach, he was an alum there,
graduate there. But also his dad is the owner of
a freshman FedEx. So you're saying, okay, like you not
only get him, but maybe you're able to get FedEx
to drop some coins in in the collective to up
the ani when it comes to what you're able to
(02:12:20):
do and provide. Now that Arthur has said, hey, I'm
out the race, now your eyes go somewhere else, there's
been somemmer All who's at Tulane has been intriguing because
he went from Troy had success, Tulane had success. Maybe
he follows the path that mac Brown followed from Tulane
to North Carolina. I think it's tough. I think it's
an interesting job because there's a lot of potential there,
(02:12:41):
but it's unrealized. And who wants to take on that
challenge of taking North Carolina to the next level Because
there's no reason why North Carolina can't be like Michigan
and some of these other schools that are good in
basketball and football.
Speaker 10 (02:12:55):
Yeah, it just seems like there's an opportunity there. I
was going to say, you could probably tap into some
of that basketball that's been made over decades.
Speaker 5 (02:13:02):
A basketball money is different and at basketball money is
a different animal.
Speaker 10 (02:13:05):
Now that's a whole other giant pile. Like I'm not
even looking for a little of it. I'm not going
full Joker Dark Knight where I'm making a giant mountain
of money and burning any of it. Like no, no, no, no,
we all win if football comes to the table too.
Like again, some of the arguments and fights that happened
in these things always amaze me, Like.
Speaker 1 (02:13:24):
You realize it's good for everybody, but no, but I
gotta have mine.
Speaker 10 (02:13:28):
He's Bucky Brooks, and Bucky Brooks, I'm over at Swollen Dome.
As we continue the National Football League Big Slate today,
already four games in the book, So we're gonna go
back in a mini rewinds. Take a look at what
we saw, because there's one team in particular that I
have to circle wondering have we slept on them? And
are they for real? We'll talk about that as we
continue here. It's Fox Football Sunday at Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (02:13:51):
Welcome back in.
Speaker 10 (02:13:52):
It's Fox Football Sunday, Fox Sports Radio by Carbon alongside
Bucky Brooks. Find Bucky over on Twitter at Bucky Brooks,
read him NFL.
Speaker 1 (02:14:00):
You see him everywhere. It's our guy each and every week.
Speaker 10 (02:14:03):
Blessed to be able to do it for as long
as we have at Swollen Dome where you find me
and remember, keep it tuned. Coming up top of the
hour ten am Eastern, seven o'clock Pacific, each and every Sunday,
It's Countdown to Kickoff presented by BETMGM, ran No, Jeff Schwartz,
Professional better, Bill Krakenberger had you covered three hours before
kickoff every Sunday morning. All the prop bets, the moving lines,
(02:14:26):
some reviews of the good, the bad, the ugly, and
trends that you've got going out there. Listen to Countdown
to Kickoff, presented by BETMGM. Right here on Fox Sports
Radio and the iHeartRadio app Bill always with a couple
of fun tales from the chaos in Las Vegas. I
can't wait for his movie and or book series to find.
Speaker 1 (02:14:46):
Its way to our stores.
Speaker 10 (02:14:47):
Bucky, as we roll through here here on a beautiful
week thirteen of the NFL season, four games in the books,
the Chiefs controversy seems to find them, luck, horseshoes, all
of those things, Taylor, swift effect.
Speaker 1 (02:15:00):
Whatever you want to ascribe to it. A narrow win
Las Vegas.
Speaker 10 (02:15:04):
If it wasn't for everything going on in Chicago, Antonio
Pierce might have gotten a little more heat for how
that game finished in terms of down distance, clock management,
et cetera. And look, we just talked a little bit
about Andrew Luck and and just the changing landscape of
college football that we're bringing in GMS, and we see
multiple teams with the coordinators not just your offensive defensive guys,
(02:15:27):
but game and down distance supervisory roles. They've ascribed many
names to it. But in the end, why is it?
Why is that so lacking on NFL and collegiate sidelines.
Speaker 5 (02:15:42):
There's a lot going on, and it takes someone to
really study it to be good at it. There's not
a formula, and it takes experience, it takes a calm line,
it takes poise all of those things, and sometimes we
need to hear coach being tasked with doing that, as
well as play calling and other stuff. It can be challenging,
(02:16:03):
particularly when the pressure of the moment is on you.
Speaker 4 (02:16:06):
That's why some people delegate it.
Speaker 5 (02:16:07):
They hand it off to an assistant who reminds them, hey,
here's where we're at. We need to call the time
out after this play, or you got two timeouts left,
let's think about X, Y and Z. A lot of
those things need to be baked out, and it happens
at every levele sometimes, like might you just have to
have reminders on your little index card or your play
(02:16:28):
sheet how you want to play out all of these things.
As much as we like to think coaches are at
their best drawing up stuff, right, we see everyone making
adjustments on the sideline. The best coaches have everything already
worked out before they get to the game, because then
they can just follow the protocol. Here's how we're gonna
handle it. We've already talked about it, we discussed it.
(02:16:50):
This is our best call. This is how we go
handle these situations. Situational football is an art and you
have to spend a lot of time working on it,
not only in the off season, but weekly. You have
to remind players, here's the situation, just what we want
to do, decide we can.
Speaker 10 (02:17:02):
Go about Devil's in the details, as it were. And
we've seen it so many times, especially in a league
where so many games are decided by six or fewer points.
We've run that stat I think every week on the
show when we're talking near to triple digits in terms
of games being decided by seven or fewer and then
you know, drill it down to six or fewer inside
(02:17:23):
that touchdown run. But certainly, week after week we watched that.
So I'll make it about me for one more second
before we get to the rest of those Thanksgiving Day games.
So and all of that, as you said, you know,
needing those meeting those responsibilities, play calling, all that other
Thomas Brown and short sample size with Caleb Williams, they
(02:17:48):
were terrible for a half. Defensively, they were lifeless offensively
when they were on the field, there was there was
nothing to be seen there. Okay, fine, E's elevator, but
you're just now getting all of that camaraderie and you know,
kind of cohesiveness there to where he's empowered a bit
more after the firing of Waldron. Three weeks later, he's
(02:18:11):
made the head coach. I'm a little curious in terms
of that processing when you're still trying to get Caleb
to where it's a sixty minute game.
Speaker 5 (02:18:22):
Look, I think a couple of things that probably stood out.
They caught the eye of.
Speaker 4 (02:18:28):
The people that made the decision. One is natural leadership skills.
Speaker 5 (02:18:31):
The way he stood in or he stepped in for
Saint Waldron and been completely different in terms of communications, style, leadership,
ability to directness that he's had And you can see
that in the press conferences. He's a very cut and dried,
black of white communicator. And for this team we talked
about the players told I told you about the whining
(02:18:54):
and pouting and all the other stuff, he appears to
have the personality to do it. Here's the one thing
that we know not this from having kids. As much
as kids bristle at organization, structure and discipline, they also
crave it. So what you're hearing from the locker room
are players asking for more accountability, higher.
Speaker 4 (02:19:14):
Standards than those things right.
Speaker 5 (02:19:15):
It kind of runs counter to what you want from
a quote unquote players coach, but Thomas Brown has given
them that, and because it was so apparent when he
took over the offense, the entire team has gravitated towards
that forceful nature and approach. So he'll get a chance
over four or five games to show what he can
do as a leader. It's uncommon for the interim coach
(02:19:36):
to have success as a long term coach, but it's
a great opportunity for him to show the rest of
the league what he can do in the leadership position.
Speaker 10 (02:19:43):
Still waiting for Ryan Poles to actually address anybody in
a press conference scenario because I now get to ask
the question now that eberfluses out of the building and
everything's been turned over, what happened Alan Williams, Come on,
I want to know once and for all. Had two
guys disappeared last year off that coaching staff that were
(02:20:03):
never heard from again?
Speaker 2 (02:20:04):
Why Bucky Brooks?
Speaker 4 (02:20:06):
Why, Hey, you may have to wait for date line.
Then didn't do that. My man with divorce is going
out to the.
Speaker 5 (02:20:13):
Sun, said, And so they showed up at Alan Williams's office.
Speaker 4 (02:20:17):
Lead it out like it's gonna have to be something
like that. I don't know. It is a mystery, is
an epic mystery.
Speaker 10 (02:20:24):
All sorts of chaos, no question about it. Last one
before we bring in our guy, Dann Bayer. Packers thirty
to seventeen winners over Miami the Cold. We'll talk about
it with Tua and all of that, as we always do.
Because the numbers looks pretty. The performance was not. So
Folks that immediately just point to a box score. It's
(02:20:46):
the old show me you didn't watch a game without
showing me you didn't watch a game and maybe just
had an extra, you know, trip to fan induced coma.
But Packers put up thirty points. They've got the sixth
hardest schedule, remaining dates still against Detroit in Minnesota and
the Seattle Seahawks, and you've got the Bears and Saints
(02:21:06):
on the other side of that dividing line courtesy of
our good friends over at Tangathon.
Speaker 1 (02:21:11):
But are you buying what the Packers are selling?
Speaker 10 (02:21:13):
Back to back weeks shutting down run games and Jordan
loved taking better care of the football.
Speaker 4 (02:21:19):
I'm actually buying it.
Speaker 5 (02:21:21):
I'm really positive about the package and the reason why
Jeff Athley's been a really good pick up for them.
They're doing a really good job of being aggressive but
being smart because they're playing aggressive coverage with their odds
on the secondaries and odds on the quarterback. So that's
leading to more turnovers and big players. You've seen Zavid
McKinney have a bunch of picks and interceptions because he's
able to kind of get after it. They are a
(02:21:43):
young team that is super talented. You see all the
investment in the defense has paid off. How many first
round picks do they have on that side of the.
Speaker 4 (02:21:50):
Ball every year?
Speaker 5 (02:21:51):
When we were crying for, oh, Aaron Rodsney's another weapon,
They're like, yep, let's get a defender.
Speaker 4 (02:21:56):
Aaron Rosney's another pass coacher. Yep, let's get another defender.
Speaker 5 (02:21:59):
So now they have a really talented defense. They have
a young and improving offense, and Josh Jacobs coming over
has given them the balance that they need. They don't
need Jordan Love to be the playmaker. They just need
him to manage the game and occasionally make some plays.
Jordan Love is actually the X factor because if he
takes care of the ball, they win a ton of games.
When he is kind of doing that high risk, high
(02:22:19):
reward thing that he does.
Speaker 4 (02:22:21):
That's when they're vulnerable. This is a good team.
Speaker 5 (02:22:23):
They can challenge the Detroit Lions. It'll be interesting to
see how this plays out between the Lines and the
Packers on stretch.
Speaker 1 (02:22:28):
There we go.
Speaker 10 (02:22:29):
We got several games remaining. They're full slate, still ahead today,
four games already in the books, but no bye weeks.
We'll get back to buy coop by Apocalypse again next week.
Say that really fastide times six teams on by next
week for week fourteen. So as we get ready towards
the fantasy playoffs and all that fun stuff. We've still
got some shuffling to be done. But we've thrown a
(02:22:51):
lot of flowers around. You just mentioned one of the
names that's come up quite a bit. We'll debate chicken
or egg kind of theory. But first let's go over
to Dan Byer at the News Desk web partner on
the Eye Watch of Flex podcast. I think I did
a forty five minute rant on the Bears that you
walked out of the room last week?
Speaker 1 (02:23:07):
What do I do for encore? How are you, buddy?
Speaker 12 (02:23:09):
I am doing well. Great to have you back. Good
to hear from you, Bucky as well. Getting said for
a busy day in the National Football League despite four games.
As Mike said already in the books, the night gap
is the Berman Bowl, the forty nine Ers against the Bills,
the Super Bowl Chris Berman always wanted, never got, and
they got about three feet of snow in Buffalo.
Speaker 9 (02:23:30):
But the heavy stuff should be.
Speaker 12 (02:23:31):
Done by the time they kick it off tonight and
brock Perty should be on the field. He's expected to
start despite missing last week with his shoulder injury. Now,
the other game of the day, you could say is
the Eagles and Ravens at Philadelphia. Is not likely to
have wide receiver Devonte Smith for that game. NFL Network
says he'll likely miss the contest because of a hamstring strain,
while Rokwan Smith back on the field for the for
(02:23:54):
the Ravens excuse me as the linebacker returns from a
hamstring injury that forced him to miss Night twin against
the Chargers.
Speaker 9 (02:24:02):
Jets have the Seahawks today.
Speaker 12 (02:24:03):
Running back Priest Hall expected to go, while the Patriots
we'll have de Mario Douglas against the Colts. Colts will
have wide receiver Alec Pierce for the game and some
procedural moves made as the Chargers placed running back JK.
Speaker 9 (02:24:16):
Dobbins on Iri.
Speaker 12 (02:24:17):
Yesterday, Commanders did the same with Austin Eckler. Now, the
NFL Network says the Chiefs could get Hollywood Brown in
the lineup as soon as week sixteen or seventeen, as
he's missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. All
the college football conference championship games are set for next weekend,
including in the Big Twelve, where it ended up having
Iowa State taking on Arizona State. Some sad news from
(02:24:39):
college basketball if you missed it on Saturday, legendary Saint
Johns men's basketball coach Lou Carnaseca.
Speaker 9 (02:24:45):
Died at the age of ninety nine.
Speaker 12 (02:24:46):
Mike mentioned the soccer going on this morning in the
Premier League.
Speaker 9 (02:24:50):
Chelsea up on Aston Villa two nil.
Speaker 12 (02:24:51):
At the half, man You leads Everton two nil, while Tottenham,
Hot Spur and Fulham are scoreless also at the half, guys,
back to.
Speaker 10 (02:24:59):
You appreciate it Dan Byron foxes where you find and
find us on the Eyewatch Flex podcast and Dan will
be back in the big chair as he gets you
through the afternoon game.
Speaker 1 (02:25:08):
Some heavyweight battles.
Speaker 10 (02:25:09):
A little bit later on, Dan, your Seahawks and the Jets,
are you scared?
Speaker 12 (02:25:15):
I still don't know what to make of the Seahawks team.
I've written them off, I've signed up, I've written them
off the whole. You know, Geno Smith running them off,
but he didn't right back. Maybe there's a bit of
a you know, New York homecoming flavor for Geno Smith.
Speaker 9 (02:25:29):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:25:29):
We'll see revenge game.
Speaker 12 (02:25:31):
Yes, I actually have no idea how to feel about
today's game. The only thing that I know is that
I don't think that the Jets really are invested. So
that's the thing that the Seahawks have going for him.
Speaker 10 (02:25:45):
Nice little help there, Yeah, little victories.
Speaker 12 (02:25:48):
I don't know the Seahawks can run the football, but
I don't know if the Jets can stop the run.
Speaker 4 (02:25:51):
So we'll find out.
Speaker 1 (02:25:53):
There you go.
Speaker 10 (02:25:53):
We I would usually do a huge gorilla Mond soon
kind of lead into that after that kind of intro.
But two o'clock this afternoon Pacific time, Dan.
Speaker 9 (02:26:02):
And Kerry Rhoades, that is true.
Speaker 10 (02:26:05):
There you go, three hours of goodness Red Zone Radio.
Dan here with us this morning, as we come to
you from the Tirac dot Com, Fox Sports Radio Studios
so alluded to and Dan did the solid and he
served it up with a couple of the IR moves.
Speaker 1 (02:26:20):
JK.
Speaker 10 (02:26:21):
Dobbins one of the early heroes for this NFL season,
Austin Eckler, who we've seen have some big moments and
big games along the way for what was the upstart
Washington Commander's squad, And we talked about the running back
position as a whole. Right, everybody lamented, nobody's getting paid,
blah blah blah. We get the off season fun of
(02:26:43):
Shane with the Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 1 (02:26:45):
Hey, go find your market.
Speaker 10 (02:26:46):
And now everybody's trying to tell me somehow the Giants
would have been good if Saquon stayed, which to me
is specious reasoning of it all. It would have been
a feel good story of this guy stayed. Does it
make you a winner?
Speaker 4 (02:26:57):
No?
Speaker 10 (02:26:57):
Your offensive line still stunk behind Thomas he and he
got hurt. So what do you got? You still got
a faulty infrastructure. It's a house of cards, Bucky Brooks.
But all that to say, you know, you've got Barkley,
You've got Derrick Henry, you've got Josh Jacobs. These guys
all went to really good teams already. That seems to
be getting lost in all this. And I want to
(02:27:17):
throw the guys the flowers because you know me, I'm
a Chicago kid. I'm a payton behind Matt Suey kind
of guy. I'm a stiff arm guy into Neil Anderson.
Run the ball three yard. We never had a quarterback,
so it was three yards and a cloud of dust.
You know, all the old video my dad would show me,
and especially once YouTube took off, Hey watch Kale Sayers.
He's the greatest player ever. Unfortunately, those pesky injuries. All
(02:27:39):
of that to say, like, I think we're as much
as I want to give these guys their flowers, Like
those teams were built for success, right, even the Bengals
Joe Mixon leaves goes to Houston Chase Brown and before
he got hurt, Zach Moss were moving the ball. They
just can't play a lick of defense.
Speaker 5 (02:27:58):
No, they can't, not a single lick. I would say this,
you're talking about the running backs and them going to
good teams. I think that is the thing that people
are realizing, where that team builders are realizing, you know,
those years where we devalued the running back and we
kind of diminish their importance. We're seeing that you have
to have balance to be able to be successful. No
(02:28:19):
matter how good your quarterback is, he benefits from having
a solid runner in the backfield. And with Josh Jacobs
and Saquon and Derrick Henry going to good teams and
elevating those teams, maybe it changes the situation a little bit.
We're just kind of see what it looks like, but
it certainly is something that's interesting to track and follow
(02:28:41):
as we get into the draft season.
Speaker 1 (02:28:43):
Just a lot of it.
Speaker 10 (02:28:43):
You know, you look at what Gent's done for Boise
State and making a lot of noise, and we talk
about Heisman and all the awards season whatever and piling
up numbers, and we've gotten to see him on the
big stage a couple of times standalone games, So you know,
that's good for the branding and recognizing. You know, at
the collegiate level, we've got some next guys coming, so
for draft season, yeah, certainly gonna be interesting to see
(02:29:06):
because remember when Sakuon Barkley was picked second overall in
that quarterback heavy class of twenty eighteen. You know, a
lot of handwringing got done even at that point that
the Giants didn't take the right guy. Right, that's funny.
How short a time, right, memory and some injuries and
everything else. But then the time with Daniel Jones, like
see see that was our guy. I'm like you guys
(02:29:28):
didn't want him when he was drafted. You wanted every
other quarterback that came after, whether it was what Sam
Darnold all on down the line, right, because it went
baker than Barkley. But all of that to say, you know,
we look at all these different scenarios where yes, the
run games there, but you know, some flowers also to
(02:29:50):
the infrastructure. This is my way to sideswipe the Bears again,
is the fact that for the Ravens, Ronnie Stanley's healthy. Okay,
we talk v we talk whatever else. That guy makes
life a lot easier for everybody if he's on the
field and he has not been healthy for the last
couple of years. You know, the health and cohesiveness of
these offensive lines we talk about in Philly, right, it's
(02:30:12):
the old Sharks thing. You know, one guy goes down,
they seem to have one that pops up after the
next bite.
Speaker 4 (02:30:19):
Yeah, So, I mean that's the thing.
Speaker 5 (02:30:21):
And I would say this about the Phildelphigans and as
we look at them, because they're kind of the model,
the Philadelphiagans and the Detroit Lines of the model for
how you build your team. I would say, from a
roster construction standpoint, the talent that you have and all
of that, they certainly have done a really good job
investing in the offensive and defensive lines. They have the
skill positions set where they can play any style. I
(02:30:45):
will frequently kind of tell out the importance of being
able to play with force or finesse, being able to
run it when you want to run it, how you
want to run it, when everyone in the building knows
that you have to run it. But then the finesse
part is being able to throw it when people stack
up to stop that. The great teams have the ability
to do both because each game is its own kind
of snowflake, and so you kind of.
Speaker 4 (02:31:06):
Have to figure out what you need to do.
Speaker 5 (02:31:08):
To win that game, and you have to have the
balance and the diversity to be able to do it.
Those teams are well constructed, a Phillies well constructed to
be able to do that, and so it'd be funny
to watch it continue to play out, and even your team,
the Chicago Bears, as much as we loved all the
skills and playmakers, the Bears won't re emerge as to
Bears until they invest in the front line. They're not
(02:31:29):
dominant or talented enough in the front line to consistently win,
and so that's a huge issue.
Speaker 10 (02:31:34):
He's Bucky Brooks at Bucket Brooks where you find them
on Twitter, find me over at Swollen Dome. Podcasts will
go up or we're done, Shale get that up for you.
You can get it wherever you download your audio. As
we lead you into Countdown to kick Off presented by
bet MGM, coming up in twenty minutes. But first, we
got a couple other games we want to circle on
the calendar for today. There's one that I think is
(02:31:54):
flying a little bit under the radar with some huge implications.
We'll do that as we continue. It's Football Sunday on
Fox Sports Radio. Hey, welcome back in Fox Sports Radios.
Fox Football Sunday. Mike Carmen, Bucky Brooks with you here.
Coming up in about twelve minutes from now. It's Countdown
to Kickoff presented by BETMGM. The guys will have you
(02:32:14):
covered with all the different angles. You've got no overseas games,
four games already in the book, but still plenty of wagers,
plenty of props, plenty of things to clean, some insights
and go and beat the smartest man or a woman
well in your football gathering, the bar, wherever you may be.
We appreciate you being part of the extended family here
at Fox Sports Radio. You have plenty of options. We're

you get your audio. We appreciate you once again giving
us a little bit of your time. Give that iHeartRadio
app away as your holiday gift. I'm telling you, just
(02:32:59):
a little bit of your time, a little creativity to
get some nice colored pencils and a mark or make
a card.
Speaker 1 (02:33:04):
Who doesn't like a nice homemade card, Bucky Brooks, I.
Speaker 4 (02:33:08):
Mean, everybody loves the homemaker, right right.
Speaker 10 (02:33:10):
I mean, you don't even get people to give you
the half assed effort of the photo card anymore.
Speaker 1 (02:33:15):
That used to be in vote. Now you just get
an email. Here you go. We sat around, we were
watching a movie, We took a picture, and then we
mass sent this out.
Speaker 10 (02:33:25):
It's not even personalized anymore. But that's the old man
talking in me. As we get ready for a full
slate later on today. The snow game this evening has
got everybody's wrapped attention, and deservedly so. San Francisco, Buffalo,
you got Philadelphia Baltimore, two heavyweight matchups. How about Arizona
and Minnesota to spotlight that game for a moment, Bucky,
(02:33:47):
I know you and Andy as you were going through
some of the games earlier, did a little pass on
this one. Massive game on both sides, not only for
what's on the field, but also in the coaches box,
particularly from Minnesota. You know, Brian Flora is a guy
whose name circles quite a bit the quarterback position in Minnesota.
Folks still wondering about Sam Darnold, mind you, JJ McCarthy
(02:34:11):
had a second knee surgery, so keeping an eye on
that and his rehabilitation this offseason. But for Arizona, you know,
when we had Dan Byer, you know, with the news update,
and I asked about Seattle and the Jets, and he said,
I just don't know what this team is. How often
have we said that in the National Football League, where
there's still a number of teams like, I don't know
what they are? And the Cardinals feel very much like
(02:34:34):
they're in that bucket.
Speaker 4 (02:34:37):
Yeah, the Cardinals definitely feel like that. Right.
Speaker 10 (02:34:39):
Congratulations to James Cotter though the two year extension he got.
Speaker 5 (02:34:44):
I mean, how about how about that? How about him
getting the bagay? Like, just continue to get it like
and a guy who was viewed as kind of like
a throwaway when it came to some of that, right.
Speaker 10 (02:34:56):
Well, especially going into this year, it was all right,
is he gonna fall off the cliff? They drafted Trey
Benson and here you go.
Speaker 4 (02:35:03):
And then they're able to get it done, and so
you like that part of it. Yeah, But Cardinos are interesting.
Speaker 5 (02:35:09):
They're finding a way to play at a level that
you certainly appreciate. They're they're making it happen, and they
play hard.
Speaker 4 (02:35:17):
That always gives.
Speaker 5 (02:35:18):
Them a chance to be successful when it comes to it. So, yeah, look,
it's good to see. It's good to see them kind
of play that way.
Speaker 10 (02:35:26):
Bottom ten schedule left on the slate. They've still got
dates with the Patriots and Panthers and the sinking forty
nine ers and whatever. The Rams are becoming, because again
six and six is the standard in division right now,
and tough matchups. Look because look, Seattle's still going on
(02:35:47):
the road to the Jets, so we always wonder about,
you know, the travel in those games or whatever. You
look at San Francisco having to go on the road
against the Buffalo squad off of bye week and with
the winning streak of their own party coming back after
missing some time, and we talked about all of the
problems with that roster last hour on the program. The
(02:36:08):
Rams good not great would be the kind way to
say it. I think, you know, with what Sean McVay
has got working there. So all of that to say,
in division, you know, it's a puncher's chance to run through.
Just got to find a little bit of consistent football
down the stretch. But let's go to another division. You've
(02:36:29):
got Atlanta playing the Chargers, Tampa Bay Carolina against Carolina
squad that's playing better football of late road game five
and a half point favorites are the Buccaneers. Chargers in
narrow one point favorite No.
Speaker 1 (02:36:42):
JK.
Speaker 10 (02:36:42):
Dobbins goes to the ir and Atlanta. But the Tampa
Atlanta race these final couple of weeks will be fascinating too,
Captain Kirk and Baker Mayfield. Mayfield obviously and everybody's minds
and hearts, for one being the originator of all the
planting the flag stuff, but two also that lawsuit against
his dad and the cup or whatever is really a
fascinating thing that I want to do a deep dive on.
(02:37:03):
I won't do it on the radio here, because you know,
business stuff in general bores people, lawsuits even more so.
But a curious case there. Who do you take in
this stretch?
Speaker 1 (02:37:13):
Runo.
Speaker 5 (02:37:17):
Look, I think Tampa is positioned to do it just
because defensively they can create chaos and Baker Mayfield, like,
it's funny you take away some of the weapons, but
they continue to be explosive and dynamic in those things.
I'm a good way down. Look, I think they can
get it done. He is good enough, he's good enough.
He kind of fits the system. So let's go to
Baker Mayfield in that crew.
Speaker 1 (02:37:37):
All right?
Speaker 10 (02:37:38):
So yeah, the one thing in that secondary you can
make some play. So maybe a little Bryce Young Price
action in terms of your daily fantasy running amuck kind
of thing. But you know you've got the Jaguars in
Houston a little bit later on here, Bucky, be remiss
if we didn't give it a minute for what Houston's
going through right now. What have you seen differently on
(02:37:59):
their tape the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (02:38:02):
I will say this about the Texans one office line
has been an issue. The chemistry, the inconsistent connection between C. J.
Speaker 4 (02:38:10):
Stroud and the playmakers certainly hurt hurts.
Speaker 5 (02:38:14):
The play called them Bobby slowick like getting a lot
of criticism. People have seemingly found a way to slow
them down in the second half. But the talent is
certainly there. He's in a bit of a sophomore slump,
but it's just the protection. If you hit the quarterback,
he changes and he's been hit too much. And so
that with the chemistry, has made them not as potent
as we thought they would be.
Speaker 10 (02:38:34):
See that was my roundabout way of just selling folks
on drafting offensive lineman again, make your line great, everything
else will flow.
Speaker 4 (02:38:44):
I mean, it's true though, what we talk about with.
Speaker 10 (02:38:47):
These great, great teams, right You've got some cohesiveiss in
those front five or on the other side of the ball. Right,
we're talking with Chris Purfett. You know his Lions. Now,
even if you're the most ardent Lions fan, you got
to go and find an extra scorecard to figure out
who the hell is running around the field for you.
So all of that to say, the final two weeks
are going to be interesting here in the National Football League. Bucky,
(02:39:10):
you have a great call today, a great couple hours
with you as always here on the radio at Bucky
Brooks where you find him, you find me over at
Swollen Done.
Speaker 1 (02:39:18):
Thanks for the team to Chris, to Shay to Dan.
Countdown to kick off is next.
