(00:26):
The way tire buying should be absolute jam Pack show.
Tonight we covered all. Larry Sorenson joins us in fifteen
minutes talk about this college realignment deal. He should know
a thing or two. He played the Big Ten and
he's a broadcaster in the acc of course, Mark Medina
Midnight Magic. But here, look, we got so much to

(00:46):
get to. Rather than a rundown, I want to dive
into something because college football is back, and don't tell
me you're not glad it's here. And it's not just
the game, betting, the game, the game in the field,
et cetera. It's gonna be there's gonna be human interest stories,
and there's gonna be surprises, and there's gonna be memories,

(01:07):
and there's gonna be highlights, and there's gonna be expectations
and disappointments and expecting the unexpected. There's gonna be all
of that. And even though today week zero is it
you optimal in terms of stellar matchups. It's kind of
like if your buddy invites you over to his house
to have a pizza. Yeah, great, I wonder what he's

(01:27):
gonna have Deep Dish, Chicago Deep Dish, or maybe we'll
have New York Pizza, whatever the case may be. And
you get there and he's got a frozen pizza. You're
not pissed. You're gonna eat it. You you shouldn't complain.
You may be slightly disappointed. You know it's not the
real deal, but you're gonna eat it. Frozen pizza tastes
pretty good. Right Well, that's kind of like what week

(01:48):
zero is. And even in week zero, you still got
notable events. I watched a lot of football today, took
a lot of notes today. And by the way, interesting
when we talked to Larry and fifty minutes he covered
Sam Hartman for three years at wake Forest, saw nothing.
He only threw one hundred and ten touchdown passes there
through four more today and that's where we start. Now,

(02:10):
there's no such thing as winners and losers in Week
zero on college football, but there are some notable events
and some selected achievements. I think you've got to look at. Okay,
the reason this story. I'm glad Notre Dame played Week zero.
Pretty cool event in Dublin. There the moment Sam Hartman
committed to Notre Dame. And again you know you saw

(02:31):
what he did at Wake Forest for Dave Clawson. All
of a sudden, there are expectations in Notre Dame. Again,
so far, so good. Hartman completely dominated this first game
of the Irish forty two to three blowout, completed fourteen
to sixteen, one hundred and ninety six yards. It was
a man against boys. He could have gotten worse. Notre

(02:52):
Dame's got a long season ahead. But I will tell
you based on what I saw today, not that it
can't change Hartman does give the eye is your real
chance of being a national threat. There're gonna be some
speed bumps, Ohio State. I thought Notre Dame looked better
than USC. I think you're better on both sides of
the ball, not maybe offensively with Kayleb Williams. But I'll

(03:12):
tell you what that'll be fun to watch the other
side of the coin there. I have always greatly respected
the Service Academy and their football programs and how competitive
they are. Air Force has always been competitive, so has
and typically so as Navy an Army. Maybe the last
three four years it's been rough, all right. Notre Dame

(03:34):
was a pretty big, big, you know, pretty big favorite.
Twenty one points, right, and before the seats were warm,
it was twenty one nothing out. This game was thirty
five thirty two last year, and Notre Dame went with
a new coach. They hired a new guy by the
name of Brian Newberry Cup maybe Brian Nuby. I think
he played his collin football at Baylor. See what I

(03:55):
did there, Nuby? All right, that's not gonna stick. Forget it.
Here's here's what bugged me today. All right, Navy's down
twenty one nothing, and just as they're you know, the
first half is winding down, they put together a pretty
nice eight minute drive. They get just inside the red zone,
and all of a sudden they face a fourth and four. Now,

(04:18):
I think the prior coach would have gone for it,
because you're down twenty one to nothing. It's the first
game of the year, and you're you know, you're breaking
them a bit of a new offense as well. But
what do they do? They decide to kick a field goal?
Whooped the damn do so? That makes you twenty one
to three. You're set to receive the second half kickoff.
What are you doing here? All right? That doesn't help
you a whole hell of a lot. But you finish

(04:40):
off that drive and you go into the locker room
at halftime, different dynamic. But they didn't. They didn't. You
know what happened next to that point? Notre Dame. It's
scoring a touchdown, touchdown, touchdown on their only three drives.
Field goals ain't gonna cut it, Brian. You can't really
bring field goals to a touchdown fight, right, You can't
bring or peachhooter or do a gunfight. That's what he did.

(05:01):
And it's not that the choice determined the outcome. I
get it. It may not have mattered if they'd have
gotten a touchdown or not they missed the field goal.
What mattered was how conservative they looked. And this is
not the day time to do that kind of stuff.
That bugged me. Caleb Williams and USC well as advertised

(05:22):
USC puts up a fifty six burger over San Jose State.
Caleb Williams two hundred and eighty five yards, four touchdowns,
He engineered eight possessions, scored touchdowns on six of them.
So this is a guy. Now. No one's won the
Heisman Trophy back to back years and forty years. Archie

(05:43):
Manning did it at Ohio State. I think the voters
get voter fatigue. Do I think you win the Heisman?

Speaker 3 (05:47):
No?

Speaker 2 (05:47):
I don't. Could he have a Heisman worthy year? Absolutely,
and it started doing it. I thought Caleb Williams looked awesome.
I don't know that I can. Jason Martin brought up
a great point. You don't over react a weak one,
you don't, But I wasn't. I don't love USC's defense.
I mean, what's to love, you know? Please explain that
to me. I just wanted to see something different, and

(06:08):
I don't know what I wanted to see, but I
didn't see it. I'll tell you that. How about Jacksonville State?
They make the jump to FBS. By the way, guess
who they're head coaches? Wrong? It's Rich Rodriguez of Michigan
Fame of Michigan Infamy as it were welcome to the party,
pal Jacksonville State their first ever contest as a member

(06:30):
of the Football Bowl Subdivision. Well, and they're the game Cocks,
by the way, for going at home. So should they
end up playing South Carolina someday? Bet the game Cocks
and you'll go away happy. See what I did there.
That's not gonna that's not gonna stick either. All right, newcomers,
Well they clip UTAP seventeen fourteen in an ESPN Instant Classic, Right,

(06:52):
Melick Jackson, Maybe he'll be a household name. Rush for
seventy six yards. Blah blah blah, Jacksonville State. Unfortunately, stupid
or roll, they're not eligible for postseason play for like
four years. But you win that first game. Not that
one of the games that a lot of better is.
I think the pros run Ohio. They visited San Diego State.

(07:13):
I did not touch this game. I like the under boy,
that was a beauty. You'd like to have more like that.
I did play the under It was under forty eight
and a half. Get it up twenty to thirteen. Ohio
is a very good team. The MAX is a very
good conference. That game started out to be a good
fistfight in the phone booth. Unfortunately, Ohio's quarterback Curtis Rourke,

(07:36):
who was coming off at ACL last November, he recovered
in time to play against San Diego State. He leaves
the contest with an unspecified injury, and believe me, they
missed him. They brought in a backup named CJ. Harris.
He threw three picks. They missed a thirty one yard
field goal in the third quarter. Ohio was game, but
they just want themselves as it were. But Ohio has

(07:58):
the potential to win the BAC. I believe little disappointment.
You would have expected to get more out of their offense.
U Mass was a really trendy play among sharp betters.
They opened up at plus ten, it got back down
to seven. I talked about this last night with Rolph Michaels.
He brought up some good points. If you're not familiar
with U Mass football, here's a quick primer for you.

(08:19):
In twenty nineteen they were one and eleven. The COVID year,
they were zero and four. Twenty twenty one, they were
one and eleven. Twenty twenty two, Yeah, you guess it.
They were one and eleven. Got to admire their consistency.
That's three and thirty seven in the last four years.
So when you begin the season with a victory, yeah,
that's worth the celebration that follows. Give it up to

(08:40):
the UMass Minutmen. Three takeaways, four hundred and sixty eight
yards on offense, and they beat down. They beat an
Okay Mexico New Mexico State team forty one to thirty.
The bottom line is the value of a win. It
can't be understated. U MASS themselves just joined the FBS
ten years ago. Now week zero the only time you

(09:00):
hear about UMass all year but for day, for today.
Take your victory, Latin guys. It was a really terrific effort.
I went back and forth. I watched a lot of
that game, watched a lot of about five games todays.
Really I really enjoyed it. Like I said, frozen pizza,
Hey man, it'll do in a pinch, and football is back.
Look for the human interest stores as surprises, the memories,
the highlights, and yes, expect the unexpected. You know, the

(09:24):
drill want to remind everybody the tire Rack Sweepstakes continues.
It's the final weekend in our summer of tire Rack Sweepstakes.
This is it. We've had two winners so far. We've

(09:46):
taxes and fees valued it up to fifteen hundred dollars.

Way tire buying should be coming up Larry Sampson. We
talk comp ference realignment, and of course much more involving
the world of the new world of college football. I'm

Speaker 2 (10:27):
All right, back on the Bernie Fradle Show, Fox Sports
Radio come to you live from the TARAQ dot com
studios in Las Vegas at this time. Welcome in a gentlemen,
ten year major leaguer, twenty five year broadcast career, currently
color analysts for wake Forest football and baseball, and also
did his college times playing time in the Big Ten,

(10:50):
so fits nicely for the subject matter we've got tonight's
say Hello, Larry Sorenson. Larry, how are you, buddy?

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Bernie?

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Great to talk to you as always, and I, Larry,
I want to start. I want to give you your flowers.
Wake Forest gets to the finals of the College World Series.
You're a whisker away from knocking off lsu. I had
planned to have you on the next night. And then,
of course that's baseball. But congratulations on an not standing year.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
It was a lot of fun. They had ten players drafted,
so there was a lot of talent, a lot of
great players. They've moved on and they've reloaded picked up
Chase Burns from Tennessee, who might be the first player
taking in the draft this year. Nick Kurtz might be
the first player taking in the draft this year, so
they should be stacked up pretty well again.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
And of course your pitching staff sets up quite nicely.
So I think you guys would be right back next year, contending.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
That it's gonna be fun. Got to get through football first.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
That's right, And it is football season, and I'm guessing.
And of course you know Sam Hartman personally and covered
them for three years, watching him throw one hundred and
ten touchsdown passes. Did you get a chance to sample
the game today against Navy? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I did tune in because Sam was a great kid
the entire time that he was here away forth saw
him come in as a freshman and play his entire
career here and a terrific athlete, but a really good
kid and a magnificent leader.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
This is the fourth year.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
In a row that he's been captain of a football team,
which I think really speaks volumes for the character of.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
The young man.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Wow. So he was actually captain as a freshman that
wake four.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Well, he played he played five. He played five years
here and he was magnificent. Moved into the starting role
right away as a freshman with some different changes that
they had going on, then was red shirted the next year,
so it was really an interesting progression. I think the
one thing that one story I remember about Sam was
we were doing a fan fest and it had rained,

(12:45):
so we were underneath the stands and the football team
came in and they were all wandering around and Sam
was with the freshman class. They were about twenty of
them together and they were wondering what to do next,
and Sam said, let's go here, and as a group,
every single player just followed Sam. Even as a freshman,
he was the guy that took over, and people believed
what he said and followed.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Him and every move that he made.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
So quite an impressive young man.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yeah, you can certainly see it in his body language
and his physical attitude. He's got that heddle present. Sorry, Larry.
One of the things I really wanted to talk about
in depth tonight. I think you're uniquely qualified to talk
about it because you played in the Big Ten and
now you work in the ACC. Give me your synopsis
and your reaction as to what's taking place with respect
to this massive realignment.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Well, you know, Bernie, a lot of it. I'm a fan,
just like everybody else out there. I played at Michigan,
so I follow Michigan and that's a story for another day,
but you know, I follow Michigan, and I wanted to
go to Michigan State. So I follow Michigan State. And
the greatest thing to me was about every month, every
Sunday morning Monday morning, talking to friends and talking about

(13:51):
the rivalry and talking about the games and what happened,
and the closeness of the league that you played against
and you knew the players on other teams. You knew
who was starting for Ohio State, and you knew what
was going on all at Iowa and you paid attention. Now,
there's giving to be so many teams, they're so stretched

(14:12):
out you don't play them every year. But I think
we've lost a lot of that, and it's just become
We've become very cynical as fans. They're just another game,
you know. There's just not as much special about the
games to me, and I hate to see that happen.
And I hate to see what they're making the student
athletes do in order to play some of those games.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yes, we're going to get to that second. First, what
makes college and let's just stick with football for purposes
of this, But what makes it so great are the
rivalries because they give it texture and they give it meaning,
and they give it significance and context. And we're finding
out Oklahoma and Oklahoma State might not play anymore, you know,
Betler might not happen. So how about Michigan Michigan State

(14:53):
if we get down the road four years, Larry, is
there any chance that potentially goes away the in state
rival Oh?

Speaker 3 (15:00):
Absolutely, I don't think there's any doubts that it could
go away because in the ACC now they've gone to
three permanent rivals, and so wake Forest will play Georgia Tech,
they played Duke, and they played Virginia Tech.

Speaker 5 (15:16):
And I believe that the.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
North Carolina State Wake Forest rivalry is the longest had
been the longest running rivalry in college football, and they're
not going to play next year. So it's just crazy.
They've taken a lot away in that respect about who
you cheer for, how you cheer for them, and it's
really changed. And granted, Bernie, you and I are older,

(15:38):
you know, and so we enjoy remember the old days.
But there's still a lot to be said for NC State,
who is an hour and ten minutes down the road
from Wake Forest, instead of USC playing Penn State, or
USC playing Indiana or whatever the case may be.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Talking with Larry Soawrenson ten. You Major League played his
Michigan played baseball at Michigan in the Big Ten. Commentating
now in the ACC all right, I want you to
talk about the student athlete. This is important. I think
Larry and my college baseball career, we flew twice. That's it. Now. Well,
you know everything four hours or less than everything by bus.

(16:18):
And you know I was not a good student my
first two years. I get back, I'd sleep in I misclass.
What the hell, I'll make it up next year. Right.
The bottom line is I do all you can do
that now, But what's going to happen. We talked about
this in the phone last week. It brought up some
great points. You've got to find academic institution like Wake Forest.
If the volleyball team happens to have a game at
Stanford because the a SEC is talking about adding Stanford,

(16:39):
you fly back late. Talk about the imposition on the
student athlete from your vantage point.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Well, in Winston Salem they call it workfor us, and
they don't play around the other day they open up
their brand new football complex locker room and they put
about thirty eight million dollars into it. They have four
players that represented the football team they had seven college
degrees between the four players, and the fourth guy was

(17:08):
working on his masters and he'll have it at the
end of the year, so you graduate. Over ninety five
percent of the players at wait Forrest graduate, and that's
what they do. I remember during baseball season, Brock Wilkin,
the nineteenth player taking in the draft, miss batting practice
because his professor called a Sunday exam or a Saturday exam,
and it was a six o'clock game. It was a
two o'clock exam. Wilkin had to go take it and

(17:31):
he came running out about four point thirty, ran down
to the cage in the center field and was hitting
off the pitching to off the hitting coach in the
center field shot. So they don't let you miss class,
they don't let you miss exams. You go and they
monitor at the football team in particular, monitors it extremely closely.
So if you have to go to Stanford and you

(17:52):
have to play a game a basketball game on a
Tuesday night, you take the red eye back. You get
back at five in the morning. If you've got a
nine o'clock class, they.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
Expect you to be there.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
And I think that we're doing a disservice to our
athletes putting the kinds of pressures on them academically at
some places, you know, other places maybe not as much
you're expected to go, but there's a lot of schools
where you still have to go to your classes. It
doesn't matter what time that flight got in the night before.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Right. No, No, you raise a very challenging logistical issue.
And let's talk about acc expansion. I understand the conversations
every NWED. They're strongly considering Stanford and col and maybe
even SMU and they might have been vote short before,
but they might be getting closer. Have you heard anything
from Jim Fildmas, What are your thoughts? Could these could

(18:39):
these come to fruition?

Speaker 3 (18:41):
Well? I went to I think that the wild card
is that they're getting the presidents involved in the presidentcy
dollar signs and academic reputations. And they say, yeah, that'd
be great because since they're not going to take their
money for the first seven years and we get their money,
we get to split it up. Thanks, what do you
do to the league now of the Atlantic Coast Conference?

(19:01):
You're going coast to coast with the with the conference,
and it's just a huge difference and yeah, the money's
going to be great for the first seven years, You're
still going to trail the SEC.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
You're still going to.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Trail the big ten in the amount of dollars that
you can raise. But there are some schools that are
seeing the dollar signs a lot more than the pitfalls
that are going to come along with it.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Arguably, the two biggest brands from a commercial standpoy At
Florida State and Clemson are unhappy with the financial arrangement
in the ACC. How problematic has that been? How much
pressure is that putting on the conference?

Speaker 3 (19:34):
It puts a lot of pressure on them because they
are far and away the biggest brands, and they've got
the nationwide appeal that obviously Awake Forest doesn't have. The
Wake Forest has got the smallest undergrad student body in
the Power five conferences fifty fifty two hundred undergrad students,
so it's hard to compete. You could take the entire
Living Wake Forest alumni group and it wouldn't fill up

(19:55):
three quarters of the big ten stadiums. There's only about
seventy five thousand living graduate But when you when you
start talking about how to spread up, spread out the money,
it comes out equally under the grant rights that they've
got right now in the Florida States, and the clubs
who say, if you want us to compete with USC
or you want us to compete with Alabama Georgia and football,

(20:17):
then we've got to have more money and the funnies.
The funniest thing is is that when you break it up,
and they're talking about doing it based on performance in
bowl games and so on and so forth, I've seen
some of the charts and Florida State doesn't come out
that well from the last decade or so. Yeah, so
it's kind of ironic that that's the way they're talking

(20:38):
about splitting up. Wait, Forest went down there and smoked
Florida State.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Yes here it.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
Is in Tallahassee.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Well, and you guys opened up Thursday night against Elon,
not Elon, musk Elon. But before we get to that, actually,
I definitely want to get you honest. The season goes on. Larry.
You've been involved in a unique futuristic for a couple
of years now'll called pitch logic. Bring people up to date.
Because baseball tenancies up nine percent, TV ratings are up,

(21:08):
games are twenty five minutes shorter. The average fan is back,
they're enjoying baseball, and so new fangled concepts like pitch
logic are getting a lot bigger audience.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
Now, yeah, you know what, I think we just have
to keep in mind that's part of the reason that
baseball is up is because it's gone back to some
of the old habits that they had, where the games
are faster and the pace is much much better. And
what pitch logic is is a tool that has sensors
inside of a baseball and it's major league leather wrapped
around a foll of your thank core with a circuit
board inside that gives you all the data that they're

(21:41):
using in the to learn the art of pitching and
the skill of pitching these days. And for a very
reasonable price. Instead of a really expensive permanent type machines
that you have to wheel out and measure and insert
into your stadiums, you can just take a baseball in
your telephone and buy Bluetooth can to get your spin
rates and your velocity obviously, but your arm flots, the

(22:05):
spin direction of the baseball, and all the different kinds
of information that are being used to teach pitching these days.
It's a phenomenal tool, and it's very easy to use,
and it's used by kids from litly all the way
to major leaguers. Had the rush one to a big
leaguer the other night, and he was going down on
rehab and he wanted to have one at their minor
league facility and his organization didn't have any, so he

(22:28):
wanted to take his own with him, and he needed
some new baseball to get down there.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Web Larry, great stuff, and listen. I know you're in
the Eastern time zone. I always appreciate you carving on time.
I know you're a busy guy. Good luck this season
with Wake Forest Football. Love to get you on again
as the season goes on.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
Bunny, it's going to be a great college football season.
We were happy for Sam Harmon. Hard to be happy
for Notre Dame, but happy for Sam Harmon. It's going
to be a great college football season.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
It is. You guys have been right in the middle
of it again. Good luck Coach Clawson.

Speaker 5 (22:57):
Thanks Ning all right.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
It's Larry Sorenson. Ten year major leaguer pitched for the
University of Michigan. They were Big Ten champs and he's
now in the ACC and has some thoughts and we'll
see where this goes. We're a little bit of uncharted territory,
as are running backs. Now. I know that Josh Jacobs
is back in camp. Dalvin Cook found a home, so

(23:20):
did Ezekiel Elliott, and Saquon Barkley showed up. Jonathan Taylor
trying to get things worked out. I'm gonna get my
final thoughts on the reality of the running back situation
and the objectivity, not personal feelings, objective truths. I'll share
with you what's the reality. But first let's go to
our guy Nick Cope with the latest.

Speaker 6 (23:41):
All right, Bernie, good to be back with you. Let's
go around college football Week zero, real quick. As Larry said,
Sam Hartman a great debut for Notre Dame. He threw
four touchdown passes as the number thirteen Irish took care
of Navy in style, forty two to three in Dublin,
Ireland late game number six us D. He dominated the
second half against San Jose State, a fifty six to

(24:03):
twenty eight win. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams
threw for four touchdowns. Other finals, Vanderbilt hung on against
Hawaii San Diego State over Ohio La Tech winners over FIU,
UMass beat New Mexico State, and then as you touched
that at the top of the show, Jacksonville State winning
their FBS debut against UTEP. In the NFL, Aaron Rodgers

(24:26):
threw a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson as he made
his debut at a Jet's uniform. Dolphins and Jaguars cut
their preseason game short after Miami receiver Daywood Davis was
immobilized and carted off the field on a stretcher. Dolphins
announced Davis had movement in all his extremities. Buccaneers center
Ryan Jensen placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

(24:48):
Brown's receiver Jakeem Grant suffered what coach Kevin Stefanski called
a significant knee injury during Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs.
In baseball, Reds top the Dbacks eight time, seven and
eleven innings. Since he now within a half game of
Arizona for that final wildcard spa. In the NL, Cubs
ten to six over the Pirates. Chicago has that second

(25:09):
wildcard spat in the National League. They said four back
of Milwaukee in the division, and the Brewers keep on rolling.
They've now won seven straight, five to four over the
p Andres. On Saturday, Philly is still holding that top
wild card spot in the NL. They cruise past the
Cardinals twelve to one. Al side of things, Rangers beat
the Twins six to two that snapped an eight game

(25:29):
losing streak. Mariners crushed the Royals fifteen to two. Texas
and Seattle still tie to top the AL West. Ray
shout out the Yankees three zip Orioles over the Ronkies
five to four. Tampa is the top AL wild card
team and three back of Baltimore in the division. Also
the red Sons beating the Dodgers eight to five. Best

(25:49):
team in baseball. The Braves won again seven to three
against the Giants, and one final note here in soccer,
Liono Messi. Some debate if he was going to be
able to play his MLS debut, but he did make
it with Inner Miami on Saturday. He scored again to
help them beat the New York Red Bulls. Spurnie back
to you.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
All right, Nick, So the running back conversation continues to
float through the ether, and the group think echo chamber
continues to repeat the same things over and over. I
am going to reiterate what I've been trying to say
now for quite a while. First of all, you have
to look at the game of football. It's become basketball

(26:29):
on turf. You put your athletes in space to make
a play, spread the field when you're one on one battles.
As such, the quarterback has become ultra important. Look linebackers
run like DB's did twenty five years ago. Defensive ends
run like linebackers used to run three yards in a
cloud of dust. Doesn't cut it. That doesn't mean the

(26:51):
running back position is still not important. Let me explain.
They are still an important cog in an NFL off.
You've got to block, protect your quarterback, hopefully, catch the
ball out of the backfield, get the hard yard, run
the ball between the tackles, move the change, punch it

(27:12):
in on the goal line, all of those things. But
you have a situation here. It's called supply and demand.
There are more running backs than there are jobs. You
talk to any NFL executive off the record in private.
The position's not been devalued. There's just an imbalanced to
supply and demand. There's no need to overpay. And here's

(27:34):
why let me tell you what's not lost on me.
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year
and looked good doing it. And the running back they
had that was on the field was a player who
had observed two hundred and fifty one NFL players drafted
before him. Yes, his name is Isaiah pachak Owater Rutgers.

(27:55):
He was drafted in the seventh round. That didn't stop
him from being the leading rusher in the Super Bowl.
You see where I'm going with this now, Christian McCaffrey
arguably the most talented running back in football. Maybe not
take your pick. You know, it's like picking out your
favorite noodlan to play the spaghetti. Could be Alvin Kamara,

(28:16):
could be Nick Chubb. What does it matter? He left
the minute, he not the minute, But Christian McCaffrey leaves
Carolina goes to San Francisco, Carolina's rushing attack improved. How
the hell has that happened? Running Backs are important. I
do not devalue them, and they're not replaceable, but they

(28:38):
are interchangeable. This is not a semantical argument. How else
can you put a seventh round draft choice who was
drafted two hundred and fifty first, he becomes the leading
rusher in the Super Bowl and wins a championship in
his rookie season. Look again, the game is so quarterback
centric now you play the game through the quarterback. The
best way to win the ball game is to operate

(29:00):
from the pocket. Period. Look at Buffalo. They're on their
whole offense through Josh Allen. Now Devin Singletary, who's a
stud back he left. I think he's on his way
to the Houston Texans if I'm not mistaken. They draft
James Cook in the second round last year. He doesn't
need to be a heavy volume back to give him flash.
He'll catch you out of the backfield. That's where you've gone.

(29:22):
Green Bay. They'll divide up their carriers between Aaron Jones
and aj Dillon. You get the picture. Ezekie le Elliott's
gone all right. So if you look at this objectively
and set your feelings out the door, just four running
backs actually have been selected in the first round in
the past four drafts. There hasn't been a running back

(29:42):
taken higher than twenty fourth overall since twenty eighteen, when
the Giants took Saquon Barkley with the second pick and now.
Of the eighty five running backs drafted in the last
four years, fifty nine have been taken in the last
four rounds. I could go on and on and give
all sorts just statistics. It doesn't matter cause your mind's

(30:04):
made up. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.
I'm just telling you the truth. I covered the league
for ten years. I've had lots of conversations. I've maintained
all my contacts. This is not an opinion. This is
a fact. The running back position has changed because the
game has changed. It's basketball on turf.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
Now.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
I want to say one final thing, and if you
don't like what I say, that's a you problem. Let's
say you know your son, little Willie Logart, wants to
go be a running back. Someday I encourage him. Maybe
he'll go to college. He'll he'll do well, he get
drafted in the second round, and he'll have a four
year career in the NFL, and I'll retire a multi
multi billionaire and he'll play the position he's best at.

(30:40):
You're not going to get me to take up a
collection plate for Saquon Barkley, who if he ever plays
another down again in the NFL, he'll make for ninety
four thousand dollars. How about Dalvin Cook if you never
would have played another down in the NFL this year,
which he will, he makes thirty four million dollars. Can
you make it on that as Ikey Elliott has made.
It's seventy one million. I get it. You're not gonna

(31:02):
get the quarterback money. You're not gonna get the defensive
end edge rusher money or the wide receiver money. That's
just the way it is. The game has changed. The
way you prosecuted offense has changed, the EBB and flow,
the way you scheme, the way you assemble personnel groupings.

(31:23):
It's all changed. That doesn't mean the running back position
should be set aside in the trash heep. You don't
need to have zoom calls or go on strike, or
feel sorry for yourself or take up a collection plate. Listen,
the world evolves. We once fought wars with a single
shot rifle, the center who played it with his back

(31:44):
to the basket, and the NBA used to be all
that and a bag of chips. And so was that
saying like thirty years ago, I just channel nineteen ninety three.
I am all over the place tonight. You're gonna have

You're back on the Bernie Fantos Show. Fox Sports Radio.
Company line from retire Act dot Com studios here in
Las Vegas. Take you up till three a m. Pacific
six am Eastern coming up the top of the hour,
Mark Medina, Medina Magic, all these stuff to talk about
in the NBA, and we keep you up to date.
Of course, Now I mentioned a minute ago that there

(34:23):
had not been a national champion in college football who'd
won that title three years in a row since nineteen
thirty six, thirty four to thirty five and thirty six,
and that yes, wait for it, would be your Minnesota
Golden Gophers. Now it's a it's it's a really I

(34:44):
think it's a really simple reason why it hasn't happened.
Here's why, because up until recently, the damn thing wasn't
decided on the field. You were up to the whims
of voters in the AP and UPI, and they if
they decided they weren't going to vote for you, they
weren't going to vote for you. This was never so evident.

(35:06):
The nineteen sixty six Alabama Crimson tied football team should
have easily three peeded. They were eleven to zero that season,
they had six shutouts, and then the Sugar Bowl they
beat number six Nebraska thirty four to seven, completing their

(35:27):
quester on the table, which they did. Now the voters decided,
though that they would give a joint championship to Michigan
and Michigan. Check that Michigan State and Notre Dame because
they had that famous ten to ten tie. They must
have been smoking a joint when they gave that championship.
Bama would have hammered to either one of those teams.

(35:48):
They didn't get the chance to play them. Here's what's ironic.
In nineteen sixty four, Alabama actually lost their bowl game
to Texas, the final game of the year. That was
a Joe namth quarterback team. Obama still was voted national champion.
So see, now you get to decide it down the
field before it was decided by voters. I don't trust voters.

(36:13):
If I did, you tell me why the hell in
I believe it was nineteen fifty six, Jim Brown not
only did not win the Heisman Trophy, he finished fifth.
And my good buddy Dick Shapp said this is stupid.
He didn't vote again for twenty five years until he
voted for Marcus Allem in nineteen eighty one. But I digress.

(36:34):
Now it's decided on the field. I get it. Winning
the national championship three years is no easy task. But
George's position to do it. If you look at their schedule,
as long as they don't trip up at Tennessee November seventh,
I'm hard pressed to find a loss. I'm not going
to be that guy who goes week by week and

(36:54):
can look it up yourself. What's the point I'm making here.
It seems almost inevitable barring something that I can't predict.
Their envision. Georgia should be in the SEC Championship game
and they should advance to the playoff. That's the way
I see it. And if Georgia is in the playoff, dude,
that's where they live. Carson Beck has won the job,

(37:16):
and he would have had to have earned it. And
they have two great receivers in lad McConkey and the
best tight end of the business and Brock Powers. They
bring in a couple of transfers Rura Thomas and Dominic Lovett.
Georgia is loaded, loaded, loaded, weapons wise, flat out, so
Carson Beck will have plenty of weapons to spread the

(37:37):
ball to. They also again got a couple of receivers
from Mississippi State, Missouri and the transfer Portal. They're expected
to make a large impact by the way the Georgia
offensive line, they return for starters, and they have about
ten guys that will probably be drafted again this year.
They just keep reloading. Now, believe it or not, you

(37:59):
look on the defensetive side of the ball. I know
you may not believe this, but twenty twenty two was
supposed to be the rebuilding year on defense, and well,
if you look at the returning production in twenty in
this year, twenty three starts. Up front. You got those
veterans Zion log monsr Stackhouse, Trammel, Wallthouer, Warren Brenison. Then

(38:25):
you got a bunch of younger guys who played a
lot last year, but they runner classes and a couple
of guys who were hurt that didn't finish the season.
Probably the area that they're maybe the most inexperienced at
is outside linebacker. But they've got a good front seven,
and the secondary returns three starters, including the National Championship

(38:46):
MVP Javon Bullard. He's moving to safety. Are you kidding me?
That's Georgia loaded. In the final analysis. Look, I'm just
gonna say it. They're not going to anywhere. They're going
to be back in the playoff and I'm hard pressed
to think that they don't win it again. We'll see

(39:07):
back to back champions. And they're just as talented now
as they've been in the last two seasons, if not
more so. And that's what happens when you start stacking
elite recruiting classes on top of each other. You build
a roster that's almost too good to be true. Now again, ultimately,
it's going to come down to the quarterback. Can Carson

(39:28):
Beck do what Stetson vented did? I don't know, but
he may not have to. He may not have to
because Georgia is so loaded. And somehow Kirby Smart, who's
a Nick Saban disciple, has managed to look at this
team and convince them that they are the hunted or

(39:50):
check it out, they are the hunters, not the hunted,
that they've got something to prove that, you know. The
expectations are people waiting for them to come back to Earth.
That's the way it always works. Someone does well and
everybody stands around waiting for him to come back to Earth. Now,
Georgia may not be quite as experienced as they are

(40:10):
as they've been in the past from day one, but
they've got a staff who's experienced, and they're confident, and
Georgia has enough depth, and they have an elite defense
to go with a big playoffense. And again don't forget,
they have a very manageable schedule. Look it up for yourself.
The first few games very easy. You go to Tennessee

(40:31):
and after that, well you're on your way to the
SEC Championship game. Coming up, Mark Padina Medina Magic. We'll
talk about the NBA Coming up. I'm Bernie Frattle. We'll
come to you live from Las Vegas. Keep it locked,
it's right. You heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We're
comingy live from the tirect dot com studio. Is Fox

Summer League and probably a future NBA team. Tyre we'll
help you get there and then match selection, fast free shipping,

Tyret dot com the way tire buying should be. Well,
we're just days from September, coming through the DEBTA summer,

(41:16):
not far off NBA camps, not far off the NBA season.
We've got schedules, We've got conversations, We've got arguments. That's
why every week Saturday night midnight, you know it's that time.
Mark Medina, Medina Magic covers the NBA like a blanket

(41:36):
for us, pass his finger on the pulse. There's always
something to talking about, even on one hundred and five
degree day, Mark II doing Buddy.

Speaker 5 (41:46):
Buddy on the head. I mean, not just the storylines
that you talked about, but look, we got Fava basketball,
some details about Kobe Bryant's statue in duction next season.
Steph Curry versus Magic, Johnson debates excuuse Henderson's potential right,
we can take your pick wherever you want to go.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
And we're going to get to Jannis's comment too, which
I thought was cryptic, But I want to start with
this debate Stephan Magic. Now I'm qualified to speak on
this because not only did I see Magic play in
person many times as so on court side his entire
rookie year, as I was an intern at the Forum,
I have met when it comes to all the things

(42:23):
point guard does, and Isaiah Thomas once told me personally
he thought point guard was the most important position in
all the sports because one man with the ball in
his hands, could dictate the movements of nine other people.
I'm sorry, I'm voting thumbs down. Steph Curry's not the
best point guard of all time. What are you weigh
in on this?

Speaker 5 (42:39):
Yeah, if I had to take a pick, I would
slightly take Magic Johnson. But look, I talked with Brandon Payne,
Steph Curry's trainer, earlier this week, and here was his
case of why he thought Steph Curry had the edge
over Magic Johnson. It's not just the fact that he
is the greatest shoot of all time, but he felt
like that he had all the other skills that you
needed a point guard, as far as being a great

(43:01):
ball handler, you know, being a good playmaker, being a
great leader. You know, He's been able to add a
lot more strength to make himself more durable, both to
absorb those ankle injuries, both to attack the basket. And
no doubt, Magic Johnson he's got more championships. He obviously
was a better playmaker, but Steph does have that shooting

(43:23):
edge over him, as well as the fact that he
has all those other skills. But I think right now
I would still favor Magic because he still has more championships.
He's a better assist and passer than Steph is. And
I think that even though Steph Curry no doubt is
a generational talent, he's changed the game and the way
it's played and inspired the next generation. I think you

(43:45):
also have to give Magic Johnson credit for really playing
a very important part with salvaging the NBA and really
jumpstarting into where it is now because when he entered
the league, you know, it wasn't have and the kind
of commercial success that the NBA is having right now
because of Magic Johnson's play, his charisma, the fact that

(44:07):
he delivered championships, some star power that really helped re
vitalize the commercialization in the league.

Speaker 2 (44:13):
And of course, Magic, along with Larry Bird, did save
the NBA. In the decade of the eighties. There wasn't
a single finals played with either Boston or the Lakers
in there. I don't know who this gentleman you quoted.
I'm guessing he was not there. In October nineteen seventy nine.
Magic also redefine the position. I was there. He walked
right by me, we talked. Now this is October seventy nine,

(44:35):
and he's six foot nine and he's a point guard
and he can do any of those things, and he chose.
It wasn't a shooters league back then that it is now.
And I will give it up to Steph. He's a
prolific shooter. I'm not going to debate whether there's the
greatest shooter of all time. If someone wants to think that, fine,
you can have that. But the point guard's a multifaceted position,
and that's just a big leap for me to automatically

(44:59):
relegate step to that, you know, to that moniker. When
you got a guy like Magic Johnson and I was there,
and I he had to be there to see it.
I know that sounds cliche, but I'm telling you had
to be there to see it.

Speaker 5 (45:10):
Yeah, And I think I would add two little wrinkles
here for both Magic's case and STEP's kiss. First, with Magic,
you mentioned about how he's, you know, six foot nine.
He's not that traditional point guard in terms of size.
I think even during that era, he showed that he
can be what modern NBA players can be. I mean,
he played center in the decisive game in the next

(45:31):
eight Finals to beat Philadelphia soventy six ers because Kareem
Abdul Jabbar was hurt, and you know, as we know
about that FOURK lore, he was on the team plane
and everyone else is down troted because Kareem Abdul Jabbar
is this Hall of Fame player, and he said, don't worry,
Magic's here, and you know, teammates, I rolled their eyes,

(45:51):
but he wound up becoming clairvoyant. I think in Steph's defense,
though he has showed that he's not just this shooter.
He's not this one trick pony. He has a lot
of skill sets. So I think that even though we
both are in agreement that Magic has the edge over
step I think it's a real credit to stuff that
you can make the case that he is one b

(46:12):
or even second behind him because of how much he's
put this complete packers together as far as skills go.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
May sixteenth, nineteen eighty Magic's rookie year. He turned the
Lakers around in one year. They were a punchline in
an airplane movie. The year before Game five, Jabbar hurt
his hand, did not make the flight to Philadelphia. Magic
sat in Row one A one, which is Jabbar seat,
and said, I got this. He jump center, played all
three positions, scored forty two points. The rest is history.

(46:42):
But look, this is like arguing a favorite noodle in
to play the spaghetti. People are going to you know,
people are going to make up their minds. I want
to before we get to the rest of the stuff.
I want to get to Giannis's comments. Is that sort
of a shot across the bill at the Milwaukee Bucks organization,
Like I'll hang around a year or two, but if
we win, then I'm gonna look at my options exactly.

Speaker 5 (47:03):
I mean, look, you got to take everything seriously. I mean,
he's all about winning championships and he wants to get more.
And while I think that the Bucks to get some
equity because it's not like he hasn't won one yet
and they have made a coaching change that suggests that,
you know, they will be able to rectify things from

(47:24):
their first round playoff exit, and you know, the honest
is healthier. But I think that this is a message.
You know, don't think that I'm just going to be
this generational talent that's with one team, like a Tim
Duncan or a Kobe Bryant. I think ultimately he's going
to wind up with the Milwaukee Bucks. His entire career.
But I think it's also a message that there's a

(47:46):
lot of work that has to be done to make
sure that he stays that way, because in his mind,
he's not playing with house money. Everything else is gravy.
He wants to be a multi championship winner, and if
the Bucks, you know, wind up slippering, slipping in that department,
he would look elsewhere. But look, I think when you

(48:06):
look at the Eastern Conference landscape, I would still put
the Bucks at number one here because they have a
healthier team, including the honest the Celics. They probably took
a step back with losing Marcus Smart and getting Chris Osferzingis.
He already has an injury this offseason, while the Celics
say they expect him to be available for training camp,

(48:27):
you never know. And then everything else in the Eastern Conference,
I mean, as we know, Philadelphia is a mess with
the James Harden situation, and there's no true contenders after
that unless the Miami Heat get Damian Lillard. So while
the Bucks should take you honest as comments seriously, they
should also look at as an opportunity because they are
in the driver's seat to make a championship run.

Speaker 2 (48:49):
Talk with Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night here
on SOX Sports Radio at midnight, Mark talk about Kobe
Bryant's statute. What can you tell.

Speaker 5 (48:59):
Us, Well, it's going to be it's very poetic because
it's going to be on February eighth, twenty twenty four.
As you may know, he wore two jersey numbers eight
twenty four. Right, there's not a lot of detail as
far as what the statue is going to look like.
You know, the Lakers had deliberately kept those things under

(49:20):
rep and I expect that that will But you know,
I talked to folks like Jerry West, the guy who
the general former general manager who secured his raft rights,
Robert horri one of his former teammates during the early
two thousand championship runs. They certainly had their opinions about
what the statues should look like. Jerry West is saying,
you know what, we got to capture the intensity of

(49:42):
Kobe's eyes because that really showed just how much of
a manatical competitor he is. With Robert Orry, he was saying,
you know, if it was up to me, they would
show him either at the scores table after he helped
the Lakers beat the Celtics for his fit NBA championship.
His arms stretch out why or when he has a
fist pump. Usually he showed that expression after any game

(50:05):
winning shot or you know, really sticking it to the
opponent in a tough, competitive game. But you know, I
think the thing that's very intriguing about Kobe is, unlike
a Kareem abdul Jabbar or Shaquille O'Neil or Magic Johnson,
three Lakers that have their own statue, Kobe didn't necessarily
have his signature shot. He had that patent fade away,

(50:28):
he had the ability to dunk, but he had all
the skill sets. So I'm really curious what the ultimate
image is going to be of him. But I think
on the other side of the ceremony, it's no doubt
there's gonna be a lot of emotions because it's just
another reminder of his tragedy and yet another moment in
which it won't be the same without him being a

(50:50):
part of it.

Speaker 2 (50:51):
Time with Mark Medina, Medina manager covers the NBA like
a blanket forest finger on the pulse, Mark, let's talk
about Scoot Henderson. I know that Victor Winbinya, I'm going
to takes up a lot of oxygen in the room.
That's just the way it is. He's a good guy.
I'm on record as saying I think Scoot Henderson is
more likely to win the Rookie of the Year than Victor.
Your thoughts on Scoot Henderson's.

Speaker 5 (51:11):
Potential, well, look, Scoot Henderson grees with you. He says
he thinks he win Rookie of the Year. Brandon Payne,
the trainer I was talking about with Steph Curry, he
also trains Scoot Henderson. I relay those comments to him
and he said, look, you know, if I play the
way he did, with just how explosive of an athlete
he is and how hard of a worker he is,
I would feel the same way. But the reality is

(51:34):
will he win Rookie of the Year. There's so many
different variables. I think when you look at the history
of the vote, they often calculate not just numbers, but
the team's winning percentage compared to the previous season. And
there's some unknowns, especially because we don't know if Damian
Loward is going to be with the team or not.
But I think that there could be a pathway for

(51:55):
him to win, because even though we've talked about vit
your web nawma, how much of his generational talent, there
could be some short term pains as far as how
he adapts the physicality. And with Scoot Henderson, he's already
ready made, which is athleticism, playmaking. That look, he does
have a weakness with his shooting. But I talked to
Brandon Payne, he is his shooting coach with the trainer.

(52:17):
He said, Scoot Henderson is a great shooter. It's just
a matter of not changing his mechanics. He says his
mechanics are great, but just making changes to how he
moves off the ball and just how balanced his body is.
But he says that he's been doing the work. He
lives basketball. He's in the gym, and so because of that,

(52:37):
he thinks that he'll really do a good job at
shipping away any learning curve that comes his way during
his rookie season.

Speaker 2 (52:44):
I think it's I think Scoot Henderson's far more NBA
ready right now than Wemby. As a matter of fact,
let's have a real fun thirty second lightning roun. I'm
going to say my four concerns. I just thought of this. Okay,
one Wemby having to deal with big bodies of some
of the opponents he's going to go up against. I
think he's gonna have issues with defensive, rebounding defense. He

(53:05):
struggled to play aggressively in Vegas and that was his
summer league.

Speaker 5 (53:08):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I agree with it. I mean, look,
this is some degree reactionary of This doesn't mean he's
gonna be a buss. He's still going to be a good.

Speaker 2 (53:16):
Player, right, but even aspired it.

Speaker 5 (53:18):
But even prior to Summer League, I talked to some
executives and they were saying, expect the physicality thing to
be an issue up until year three. So I think
you can make the argument maybe short term Scoots the
better player. Long term victor is it'll be fascinating to watch.

Speaker 2 (53:34):
Okay, I don't know if this is going to matter
your three. I think he's going to have issues with
ballhawking defenders. Wenby likes to handle the ball, he likes
to make plays for himself. He lost the ball in
traffic multiple times, and again that was in the summer league.
How does that change three years from now?

Speaker 5 (53:48):
Well, I think here's how it's going to change one,
he has a skill set that shows that he doesn't
have to be this brute, dominant force of a big man.
He can rely on his playmaking abilities, his run protection
as defender, his outside shooting potential that hasn't been the greatest,
but he has the potential. Number Two, there is an
expectation that he's going to bulk up again. He's not

(54:10):
going to try to be shack. He's not going to
be a bruising guy. But at least they'll have enough
strength and also iq from playing NBA games to absorb
that physicality. But again, so I think the larger point
you're making, it could take some time, and so I
very much see a pathway that Scoots could take that
Rookie of the Year award, you Rookie of the Year
award away from him.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
Third thing, I'm concerned about perimeter defense. He's going to
have to defend wings in the league. That's going to
be very tough to do. Teams are going to try
to pull him from the paint and switching situations. He's
got great lengths, but he's slow on closeouts. Even in
the summer league, Brandon Miller got open against him multiple times,
knocked down outside shots. How does that change.

Speaker 5 (54:51):
Well, look, in today's NBA, you guys defending all positions.
I know that was a lot of that was made
with Rudy Gobert during his time with Utah. Hey, great protector,
can't defend wings. But I think what the Spurs are
going to do is surround him with wings so he
doesn't have to do that. That doesn't mean that he
won't have that responsibility of switching out perimeters, but he's

(55:11):
such a good defender in the interior that I think
that the Spurs will be able to play chefs in
a different way against opponents when they try to put
him in bad defensive matchups.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
Final thing, and I'm just raising questions, not trying to
be critical. Defensive rebounding Winby struggled with I believe the
inability to locate the balls the rim. Sometimes here in
the Summer League, at times his reactions were actually a
second slower than other players on the court. And again
that was the summer League.

Speaker 5 (55:39):
Your thoughts on that, Yeah, I think that's part of
just being more educated with the game, and that has
less to do with physicality and more to do with
timing and being able to anticipate things, but because of
his work ethic effect that he has good IQ already.
I think that that will immediately be addressed during his
rookie season.

Speaker 2 (55:58):
Mark great stuff is always. Really appreciate it. Tell aybody

getting started. The very capable Patrick Sweeka had us the
first hour and Ethan Miller joined us for the remainder
of the show. Ethan, how you doing, Buddy?

Speaker 9 (57:50):
Doing well?

Speaker 2 (57:51):
Now? I know your busy at hell A busy guy.
I'm just kind of curious to because everybody has to
have balance in their life. You ever like consider maybe
taking like a day each day where you got to
have a little fun.

Speaker 9 (58:03):
All the time.

Speaker 2 (58:04):
Like what would be a good idea? Like have you
ever been to Tijuana?

Speaker 4 (58:07):
By the chance, you know what, I actually have not
been to Tijuana.

Speaker 2 (58:11):
I bet would you like consider doing that for like
a day trip sometime?

Speaker 9 (58:15):
I actually would.

Speaker 4 (58:17):
I would if I didn't have if I didn't have
work one morning or one afternoon or actually an entire day.

Speaker 9 (58:27):
It's it's not a morning afternoon thing.

Speaker 2 (58:30):
I maybe it's just not an off day.

Speaker 9 (58:31):
Yeah, an off day. I drive down you know what
you drive down?

Speaker 2 (58:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (58:36):
You know. Listen, Actually you want to hear something crazy, Yeah,
let's hear it. So the Phillies are in San Diego
September sixth. There you go, and I think I'm going
to go down.

Speaker 2 (58:46):
So let me ask you a question. What time do
you leave your house? Would you leave your house on
that day to get get down to San Diego?

Speaker 9 (58:51):
I got it, Well it's a one fifteen ball game.

Speaker 2 (58:53):
Yeah, so I'm guessing.

Speaker 4 (58:55):
I gotta leave at ten am.

Speaker 3 (58:58):
You know.

Speaker 2 (58:59):
There you go. So look, just to set the record straight,
because we do a research here on the Bernie Frattle Show.
If you assuming you live at the Sherman Oaks Studios
there where you are right now three hours and thirty
five minutes, that's it. Three hours, and you're there one
hundred and sixty miles and that that accountcert traffic and everything.

(59:19):
So the theory perhaps that if you left at seven am,
it wouldn't be there two or three. That's just silly,
just silly. You got the last word on this.

Speaker 4 (59:29):
Yeah, I mean anywhere you want to go, Go up
to San Francisco too, you can do that, get there
in four and a half hours.

Speaker 2 (59:36):
I'm going to come back to you in a second.
I want to ask you both one question. We've been
force fed with Victor Wemby. I've been around a long time.
I hope he makes it. I don't care, Nick Coole,
would it surprise you if Wemby just became like a
good player, another dude instead of this transcendent all world
behemoth that we're being sold.

Speaker 10 (59:55):
No, wouldn't surprise me.

Speaker 6 (59:57):
And I always get nervous with tall guys and feats
and knees, and I I don't wish that at all,
But we've seen that so often with.

Speaker 10 (01:00:09):
These heralded big guys.

Speaker 6 (01:00:10):
I think about Grego with obviously Bill Walton long time ago.
How about Cheed Holmgren. We still haven't really seen him
play all that much, So no, I would not be surprised.

Speaker 11 (01:00:22):
Thoughts on Wimby, Yeah, I mean I'm never gonna, you know,
wish obviously, like you guys are never gonna wish upon
any type of thing where he, you know, doesn't last
long in the league or anything like that.

Speaker 4 (01:00:37):
I I don't think he's he's gonna be a bust.
I think he's gonna be good for the league. I
don't think he's gonna be like a a staple name,
but I think he will be you know, I think
he'll be like a top top fifty player in the league.

Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
Yeah, I don't think he's gonna be a bust, not
at all. But I don't think early on he's gonna
have anywhere near the impact that other transcendent stars did.
I'm not gonna start naming them, but I'm gonna give
things have a context. And coming up in a second,
I'm going to talk about the Detroit Lions and why
I absolutely believe them this year and I'm qualified to

(01:01:16):
say that and I'll bring my receipts and I'm going
to tie it into what I would consider to be
the winby situation, and of course one other name that
you're hearing that people are hoping have a big year
to easier quarterback at Chicago, And I want to begin
with a narrative I'll share with you guys, and when

(01:01:36):
you put it in this context, you start to look
at things a little differently. We're gonna get to all
that word solid stuff here in just a minute, but
first let's go back to our guy Niicope with the latest.

Speaker 6 (01:01:46):
All right, Bernie, let's recap the college football games. We
had Week zero, number six USC grade second half against
San Jose State. They win fifty six twenty eight, four
touchdowns for Caleb Williams. Number thirteen Notre Dame all over
Navy forty two to three. They played that one in Dublin.
Sam Hartman the new quarterback for Notre Dame. He was great,

(01:02:08):
four touchdown passes for him. Vanderbilt hung on against Hawaii
thirty five to twenty eight, San Diego State and beat
Ohio twenty to thirteen. Now about Jacksonville Stay winning their
FBS debut against UTEPS seventeen to fourteen. In baseball, the
final game of Saturday saw the Reds top the d
Backs eight to seven and eleven innings. Since He's now

(01:02:31):
within a half game of Arizona for that final wildcard
spot in the National League, Cubs ten to six over
the Pirates. Chicago has that second wild card in the NL.
They sit four back of Milwaukee in the division. Brewers
just keep on rolling. They've won seven straight, edging the
Padres five to four. Philly's still holding that top wildcard
spot in the NL. They cruise passed the Cardinals twelve

(01:02:53):
to one. Also had the best team in baseball, the Braves,
winning again seven to three against the Giants. Over in
the American League, if the Rangers snapped an eight game
losing streak. They beat the Twins six to two. Mariners
crushed the Royals fifteen to two, so both Texas and
Seattle still tied to top the AL West. Rays shout
out the Yankees three zip Orioles over the Ronkies five

(01:03:14):
to four. Tampa the top ALE wild card team and
they are three back of Baltimore in the division. Also
had the Red Sox beating the Dodgers eight to five
in the NFL Dodgers and Jags cut their preseason game
short after Miami receiver day Wood Davis was immobilized and
carted off the field on a stretcher in the middle
of the fourth quarter. Dolphins later announced Davis had movement

(01:03:37):
in all his extremities. Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass
to receiver Garrett Wilson as Rodgers made his debut in
a Jets uniform. Raiders and running back Josh Jacobs agreed
to a one year deal worth up to twelve million
with incentives. Buccaneers veteran center Ryan Jensen was placed on
injured reserve with the knee injury, and Brown's receiver Jaquem

(01:03:58):
Grant suffered with coach Skev Kevin Stefanski called a significant
knee injury during their preseason game on Saturday against the Chiefs.
Bernie back to you.

Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
Alrighty, Nick, I'm gonna ask you a question. I'm gonna
ask Ethan the same question.

Speaker 10 (01:04:15):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
So folks have hopes, high hopes for Justin Fields, and
this is my take on Justin Fields. High character individual,
world class athlete. He does have a cannon arm. He
can run like the wind, which is great. If you're
entering a punt passing kick competition list, of course, you're
going up against thirteen year old Andrew Reid. If you

(01:04:36):
don't know what I'm talking about, google it. It's an
all timer. That doesn't mean he can prosecute an NFL offense.
The difference between running an NFL offense and a college
offense is dramatically different. Yes, Justin Fields is a dual
three quarterback, but his default mechanism is to run, so
he's a run first, throw second. He's not real accurate.
That doesn't mean he can't have a great career. But

(01:04:57):
here comes the question. So I'm gonna let me let
this out ask both of you. Let's say, guys that
Justin Field starts thirty eight games the next three years,
he goes twenty five and thirteen as a starter. The
Bears make the playoffs two of those three years. He
throws sixty five touchdown passes against only thirty seven interceptions

(01:05:19):
and complete sixty seven percent of his passes. Nick, I
can repeat those numbers, but you probably heard him. Would
you if Justin Field did that the next three years,
would that be successful?

Speaker 6 (01:05:30):
I think that would be successful. It'd be a lot
better than what he has shown so far. I have
a feeling where this is going, but just continually.

Speaker 2 (01:05:38):
Right, don't steal my thunder just yet, Ethan. Would you
like me to repeat those numbers? I can? I mean, yeah, okay.
So let's say Justin Field starts the next three years,
he starts thirty eight games, his one lost record is
twenty five and thirteen. The Bears make the playoffs two

(01:05:58):
or three years, he throws sixty five touchdowns against thirty
seven interceptions, complete sixty six percent of his passes. And
just for fun, let's say the Bears go twelve and
four in one of those years, even though we now
know they play seventeen games. Would that be successful, Ethan?
Would they call Justin Fields's success?

Speaker 9 (01:06:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:06:17):
I mean, if here's the thing as much of a
success of like not winning a Super Bowl? H Yeah,
I mean, uh, that's that's a fine career in mind.

Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
Yes, he's pretty good to me, doesn't it.

Speaker 9 (01:06:29):
Yeah, seems pretty good to me too.

Speaker 2 (01:06:31):
Well, guess who did that, Mitch Trubisky. Those are the
exact numbers that Mitch Trubisky put up. And oh, by
the way, that twelve and four year in twenty eighteen,
which mint when Mitch Trubisky was handed the keys of
the car. The Bears not only went to the playoffs,
they would have won a damn playoff game it have
had it not been for the double doing field goal
by Cody Parkey. So Mitch Trubisky's last three years, he

(01:06:54):
was twenty five and thirteen, went to the playoffs two
or three years, completed sixty seven percent of his passes,
sixty five touchdown, thirty seven interceptions, and they call him
a bum. There's no guarantee justin field to do that.
That's why I brought that up about Wemby. How do
we know what is going to be our standard of
measure as to just how great he is? We're told

(01:07:14):
he's going to be transcendent. Look, this is why we
do this. It's fun. We're not saving lives here. We're
not creating world peace for talking sports. Right, sports are
a metaphor for life. Uh, Nick, did you know where
I was going with a Did you know it was
gonna that was gonna be Trubisky?

Speaker 6 (01:07:29):
Well, you said something about the Lions before the update.
I thought there was gonna be some sort of Jared
Goff comparison.

Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
I love golf. Go ahead, I'm sorry I started sawing
that right there.

Speaker 10 (01:07:40):
No, that's that's all I everybody treats.

Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
GoF like a bastard child. He comes out of col
with a cannon arm. He's drafted number one overall. Yes,
I know the Rams have the bad taste in their
mouth because they ran into Build Belichick's defense and they
lost thirteen to three. I got news for you. Stafford
wasn't winning that game either, So we goff falls into
this favor. Now, look what he's doing with the Lions.

(01:08:04):
The point of the matter is these things are so
highly subjective, right, you just don't know speaking with the Lions.
Why do I believe the Lions are for real this year?
And I covered this team for ten years pre and
post saw it all ninety eight was Barry Sanders last
year two thousand and eight, Rod Marinelli went ohen sixteen,

(01:08:27):
saw everything in between, Matt Millon fifty games under five hundred,
all kinds of craziness. Now, we talked about this. I
talked about this in my Weekly spot with Aaron and
Aaron Torris and Jason Martins, Guy's Great Show every Saturday
night from seven to eleven. Look the last time the
Lions won a playoff game was January fifth, nineteen ninety two.

(01:08:49):
They crushed Dallas and Jimmy Johnson thirty eight to six.
John Madden was on the call that day. He said,
you're looking at the two teams of the nineties. He
was half right. Dallas went on to win three Super Bowl.
The Lions have not yet won a playoff game since.
And it's been thirty one years, but they've actually gotten
to the playoffs eight times. They just haven't won one.

(01:09:09):
Even after that ninety two game was from the ninety
one season. Two years later, they hosted a playoff game
in the Silver Dome, a game I was at against
the Packers. They were leading twenty four to twenty one
in a minute to go, and somebody lost coverage and
far through a ball about sixty five yards in the
year and I think Sterling Sharp camped under it, and
the rest is history. The whole stadium went silent. So

(01:09:32):
what's going to be different? I know, the many you
bring up the Lions, people say, oh, Samuel, Lions, I'm
not going to hold this team accountable for things that
happened before they were born. This is what caused me
to flip and I think the world of Dan Campbell,
and I think the world of Brad Holmes their GM.
He's really drafted well. But something happened last year that
no one is talking about. The Lions start one and

(01:09:54):
six and Dan Campbell made a command decision. He fired
defensive back Aubrey prot Aubrey Pleasant, and it wasn't pleasant.
His risk rewards scheme was ineffective. It was causing all
kinds of communication problems, breakdown, blown assignments. The lines were
getting beat on the back end. They fired Aubrey Pleasant,

(01:10:17):
they installed a new, much simpler system and at work.
Guess what the lines were eight and two down the stretch. Additionally,
they got to the offseason, the lines know they knew
they needed to get better in the secondary. So what
do they do. They go out and get cornerback Cameron
Sutton from the Steelers, a quality acquisition from a great culture.

(01:10:40):
They pick up safety Chauncey Gardner Johnson from the Eagles
they were just in the Super Bowl. A quality individual
they obtained from a great culture. And they also get
cornerback Emanuel Moseley from the San Francisco forty nine ers.
All big upgrades, all will step in day one and
have an impact, all from superior cultures. They also draft

(01:11:05):
Jack Campbell, a linebacker out of Iowa, a beast, a
great open field tackler. They may not be the fastest
guy in the world, but I'm kno getting tomorrow Rocky. Look,
they're already calling him Jack Lambert, which is an homage
to the former Steelers Hall of Famer. Plus, did I
mention the Lions have the ninth easiest schedule in the

(01:11:26):
National Football League This year, They'll play teams with the
cumulative record of a four to ninety two winning percentage.
One other thing, could the stars be aligning? The Lions
will play the Chiefs a week from Thursday. They opened
up as a seven point underdog. They're now a six
and a half point underdog. Guess who's not going to
be playing in that game for the Chiefs at least now,

(01:11:48):
sure as hell doesn't look that way. They're best defensive
player Chris Jones, and oh, by the way, the last
time Jared Goff and Patrick Mahomes faced off on Monday
Night football years ago, eight hundred ninety one yards total passing,
eleven touchdowns, one hundred and five points and Jared Goff
prevailed fifty four to fifty one. You know, there's been

(01:12:08):
two hundred and twenty occasions in the NFL where a
team scored fifty points. Only once did the team who
scored fifty points lose. Casey scored fifty one that night,
lost fifty four to fifty one to Jared Goff, and
the ram fans want to hate on him. I don't
think so. Not having it. By the way, the Lions
play Seattle Week two. Guess who's not going to be

(01:12:32):
playing for Seattle Week two? Another big time loss in
my opinion, wide receiver Jackson Smith and Jigba. I believe
in the Lions. I believe in their culture and if
you look at the rest of the division, yes, Minnesota
deserves a lot of credit for what they did last year,
and people would lose their minds when we told the truth.

(01:12:53):
In Minnesota. There's a thing called the Pythagoream theorem. The
Vikings won thirteen games last year, but they act act
we're outscored by three points cumulatively for the entire season.
That doesn't happen. Last year. I tried to warn everybody
who were Raiders fans they'd gone ten and seven and
twenty twenty one, and in the Pythagoream theorem, they had

(01:13:14):
a similar situation. It was going to come back to Earth.
It projected to a seven and ten season. I was
wrong and Raiders were six and eleven. And I don't
think it's gonna be much better this year. The Vikings,
they're not going to fall do all the way down
to six and eleven. No, but I'm looking at a
nine to eight team this year. That's where I see
the Vikings. The Pythagoram theorem doesn't lie, nor does it
lie in baseball. If you give up more runs, if

(01:13:36):
you give up more points than you score, you're always
going to regress back to the meet. I expect that
to happen to the Vikings this year. Also, the Vikings
were seven to zero in one score games last year.
That doesn't carry over into the next season. I really
been doing this for about thirty years. Watch if I'm wrong. Hey, fine,
we'll talk about it. I'll take my medicine. I don't

(01:13:57):
think I'm going to be wrong. Chicago Bears, they are
a long ways away. They won three games last year.
They're not ready. I'm not convinced from what I see
with Justin fields, still not letting them do a whole
hell of a lot. Last week he completed three passes
for negative seven air yards and DJ Moore in company
they add up to about one hundred and fifty yards

(01:14:18):
and after the catch yards after the catch. Nothing wrong
with that, But I think defensive coordinators are going to
make life very difficult on Justin fields this year. We'll see,
we'll see, and then that leaves to Green Bay Packers
a very good roster. They couldn't get to the playoffs
with Rogers last year. Nothing against Jordan Love. Don't tell me,

(01:14:38):
show me he hasn't gotten on the field in three years,
because I think they're serious question marks. I think he'll
have a good game and in not such a good game.
I think he'll be very inconsistent this year. Again. Could
I be wrong? Fine, don't give me the speech. Don't
tell me. Show me what I'm seeing in the Lions
are the stars are lining up? We'll see. I nobody's

(01:15:00):
gonna selectively forget. They can't wait to play Gotchat week eight.
If the Lions are three and five, knock yourself out.
But I call him as I see him. The show
is tonight, and I think the Lions did enough the
last ten games of the season last year, Boo to
convince me this is not the same organization or the
same culture. They did it on the field as well.

(01:15:22):
It was a real gut check when they went into
green Bay and beat them in Lambeau to keep green
Bay out of the playoffs, even though the Lions knew
they couldn't get in because Seattle had won earlier in
the day. You know, we've done this multiple times on
this show. Every year eighteen to the last twenty years,
somebody goes from last to first. Well, the Lions weren't
the last place team last year, but this is a

(01:15:44):
league where there's a lot of parody and teams can emerge. Now,
they may get a rough start of it. I don't know,
but if you consider all the things I laid out,
I believe the Lions will have a good year. We
shall see coming up college expansion. In terms of the realignment,
h might not be over. There are some conversations in

(01:16:06):
the ACC this past week. I'll share with you what
was said. I'm Bernie Friddle. We're company live from Las Vegas,
Fox Sports Radio, tarrac dot Com studios. Keep it locked
listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Hi,
right back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to your life from the tyrac dot com studios

(01:16:27):
here in Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour,
We're gonna take a role call of all the NFL
teams who made the playoffs last year. Like musical chairs,
who's getting left out this year? What goes up must
come down. We'll give a brief synopsis on each team
and what I think their chances are to get back
out of the dance and some who might not be

(01:16:49):
so fortunate. Tonight show brought to you by Progressive Insurance.
Progressive makes bundling easy and affordable. Get a multi policy

(01:17:11):
You heard LARRYS. Sorenson with me at eleven fifteen Pacific.
The ACC is once again strongly considering adding Stanford, cal
and SMU. Yep, you heard that right. There was an
initial push right after the Pac twelve collapsed, but it
seems to have new life the conversations are gaining momentum,
and the crux is, of course financial. The ACC is

(01:17:34):
falling behind in the financial race with the SEC and
the Big ten and their two biggest brands Florida State
and Clemson. They are not happy with the current arrangement.
Here's why this might happen. SMU has already said they're
willing to join the ACC without being paid a TV
revenue distribution for many years. I think Larry said seven years.

(01:17:56):
Stanford and Cal they perhaps would come at every day straight,
potentially as little as twenty five percent of the league
standard distribution. Well, that would leave a large portion of
new TV revenue created by the three added schools that
would be dished out to the charter members of the
ACC right now, and apparently the league is reportedly currently

(01:18:20):
reviewing these different financial models. If this comes to pass, well,
I guess it would provide a respite and a life
raft for two of the most prestigious academic schools in
the entire Power five, Stanford and Cal. But now, like
Larry said, instead of the ACC, you're going to have

(01:18:40):
the Coast to Coast Conference. What's it going to be
like when Stanford and Cal go to Virginia on a Tuesday,
I have to play a volleyball game. But you're getting
tired of hear into that scenario, and so am I.
The bottom line, this is the new world we're in.
Adapt or die. Better get used to it because we're
not going back. Everything's driven by the almighty dollar, and
I understand it's the only way these programs survive. Who

will survive in the NFL this year? Get back in
the playoffs. I'll tell you. I'm Bernie Frattle, come to

(01:20:30):
the NFL is in zero sum game. Every club that
graduates into the Super Bowl Tournament, well they're relegating somebody
else into well also ran status. Just the way it is,
there's no guarantee if you got in last year, you're
getting in this year. What we've tried to do is

(01:20:51):
ranking order of probability teams that were in the tournament
last year we'll get back in this year. And I'm
gonna start with Ethan's Philadelphia Eagles. Now, their schedule is
among the league's toughest based on the twenty twenty two
opponents winning percentages. And you got a couple of new coordinators,
and you've got different starters at running back and linebacker.

(01:21:13):
But this team is mostly intact. They drafted well, added
some studs on defense. I think if you put on
paper the roster from top to bottom, I think the
Eagles had the best roster in the NFL. So, barring
something horrible happening to Jalen Hurts, it's tough to imagine
a scenario where the Eagles aren't one of the best

(01:21:36):
seven in the NFC to get back into the playoffs.
I think they're the most likely team to get into
the playoffs of the group that was their last year.
Second tired of hearing about the Buffalo Bills. Now they're
gonna fade based on what. Look at the hell they
had to go through last year. Had to go back
to Detroit four days in a row or back to back,
and four days ever Thanksgiving because of the snowstorm, could

(01:21:58):
have played at home, had to horrible Hamlin situation, Von
Miller got hurt. They were the preseason Super Bowl darlings.
A year ago. They were still thirteen and four. I
think they'll figure out the Stephan Diggs thing if Von
Miller stays healthy, Travarius White, Micah Hyde, DeMar Hamlin, and
they just have a decent run game and a decent

(01:22:19):
pass defense, which they've already upgraded this year. Yes, they
have a tough schedule, they have an imposing division. They've got,
you know, a little bit of a voltable wide receiver
in Stefvan Diggs. But I think he's a pro and
I think he'll get it together. And they've got an
offense that Josh Allen, you know, sometimes tries to do a
little too much. But this team is very capable and

(01:22:42):
it needs to go to Buffalo. Buffalo will be back
in the playoffs. So are the forty nine ers. You
lose Tomko Ryans great defensive coordinator Nick Bosa has been
a holdout. You got an offensive line that's got questions.
But look, I believe in Brock Party. Everybody's waiting for
him to come back to Earth. Why why based on
what he had eight games, didn't lose a single game.

(01:23:04):
He commands that offense like a magician. I'm not looking
at paint pine numbers out there. I'm looking at a
real artist. Maybe he doesn't run fast, you don't like that,
or maybe he's not you know, can't jump over tall billings,
you don't like that. He knows how to play quarterback.
And let me tell you, he came through for the
for the forty nine ers last year. Now he may
not bat a thousand this year, but I think he's

(01:23:24):
going to be just fine. Jacksonville they're also for real
thanks to Trevor Lawrence. Don't misinterpret the Jags as a
fluke going to ten and seven, Lawrence, those four picks
in a in a freaking playoff game, and then it
turns around and those four touchdown passes in the second
half and they take down the Chargers. I love Doug Peterson.

(01:23:46):
I love the Tony set and the state of affairs
in the AFC South. The Jacks should have no trouble
going through that division. They should be five to one
of their division. They should own that division. Now the
Tennessee Titans that they will be approved improved, But the
jack had the best quarterback and you know, the most
balanced on both sides of the ball, with a great coach. Now,
the Chiefs, they're gonna be back in the playoff. Remember

(01:24:08):
they were eleven and six last year. And I don't
don't think just because i'm you know, they're listed fifth here.
They're the league's fifth best team. That would that's our ages.
They're murderers row. They're fantastic, and they do have a
tough schedule this year. It's not easy to win an
eighth straight AFC. West crown Or hosts the conference title

(01:24:30):
game for the sixth year in a row. And yeah,
you're breaking in a new pair of offensive tackles and
you had to wave goodbye to Eric P. Enemy and
I like Eric P. Enemy. Okay, that's not insignificant, and
the depth of the AFC is really the crux of
hy KC might only win eleven games, ten games, but
ten eleven or twelve, they're not gonna go fourteen and

(01:24:51):
three and they're not okay, But as long as you
got Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, you are not going
to be sitting home in January booking. I like the
Seahawks too. They were a wildcard team in twenty twenty
two and they I think they're improved and they keep
bringing in new young talent to infuse what they had before.

(01:25:12):
They don't miss Russell Wilson. I like Listen. There's always
the chance, but I'm not predicting it. There's always a
chance Gino Smith could revert to his Jets iteration. But
it seems more plausible to me that Seattle not only
he's back in the playoffs, but they take a step
up and they win the NFC West. It could happen.

(01:25:33):
Let's see Cincinnati, all hands on deck, the best team
in the AFC North. I think Joe Burrow will be back.
Joe Burrow will be fine. They're nursing him through right now,
and they're in a tough division. It's not going to
be easy to come out and top. But as long
as you got Jamar Chase healthy, Joe Burrow healthy, and look,
I think they're better suited to half success in the Browns,

(01:25:57):
maybe even the Ravens. As long as it's is Burrows
injured calf heels and doesn't come back to haunt him anymore.
I don't think the Bengals are that vulnerable. I like
lou Ana Rumo's defense as well. The Bengals would be
back in the playoffs now the Cowboys. I'm going to
hold my nose and say that they're likely to be

(01:26:17):
in the playoffs. This one I'm a little concerned about.
They got Barney Robol as their head coach, and they
got a quarterback who's a turnover machine. And you know
it now. If you set that aside, though, that was
an offense that really was highly effective under Kellen Moore.

(01:26:37):
Their offensive coordinator, who's not gone, he's gone to the Chargers.
Right now, you've got Mike McCarthy, he's gonna call place.
But the Dallas defense, to me, is so good. You
still got your twenty nineteen Defensive Player of the Year
Stefan Gilmour. I would say that Dallas will be in

(01:26:58):
every game because of their defense, and they might end
up nine to eight or something. But in this man's NFL,
seven of the sixteen teams make the playoffs. So I'm
gonna hold my nose and put Dallas in there. I'm
also gonna put Baltimore in there as well. They look
good on paper. I think it was great that they
extended Lamar Jackson. Lamar's healthy, seemingly happy, and he can play.

(01:27:24):
Lamar can operate from the pocket. He does not deserve
the criticism he's gotten about operating from the pocket because
he can. But he's so dynamic with his legs that
you know you got a factor in that as well.
Baltimore's gonna have to channel all this talent into an
offense is cohesive and consistent. But if they do, they're
gonna be a tough out. They're gonna be you know,

(01:27:45):
you can get eleven to one odds in Vegas. Will
any of the divisions have all four entrants make the playoffs.
It's highly unlikely, but if anyone's got a chance, it's
gotta be THEFC North because Cincinnat he's in. I think
Baltimore's in. I think Pittsburgh's gonna probably be in. Well,
Cleveland not so sure, but you can't count him out.

(01:28:07):
All right. The Miami Dolphins. I believe in the Miami Dolphins.
Given how tightly packed the AFC is shaping up, I
would say, you know, it doesn't help that you lose
cornerback Jalen Ramsey, although for a guy that's supposed to
be as good as him, he's sure got beat a
lot with the Rams, but you'd rather have him than
not have him. Mike McDaniel's playbook should take shape in

(01:28:31):
its second year. I'm a believer in Tua I am.
I'm a believer in Tyreek Hill. I think Miami's got
a good defense. I love Vic Fangio. That's gonna keep
Miami viable, that defense. Miami's a tough place to go
down to play in September. It's hot, it's humid. So look,
they're gonna battle Buffalo, They're gonna battle the Jets. They're

(01:28:53):
gonna certainly battle New England. Miami had some nice victories
last year, and they almost damn near went up there
and won a playoff game in Buffalo with Skyler Thompson
for crying out loud, hopefully to stays healthy. I don't
know about the Vikings man no Dalvin Cook, no Adam Feelin,
no Eric Kendricks, no Zadarius Smith, no Patrick Peterson. I

(01:29:17):
don't believe they winning in thirteen games this year while
getting out scored over the course of the season. I
think Justin Jefferson could look forward to a lot of
double teams this year, and I think Kirk Cousins there's
gonna be a lot on his shoulders. I don't know

(01:29:38):
that I would predict the Vikings they are gonna fall
all the way to seven and ten. But they're sure
as they are not going to be thirteen and four.
They're gonna They're gonna be right on the cusp as
Mike the Giants, and I like the Giants, and I
like Brian Dabel, and I like Daniel Jones, but they
probably overachieved in twenty twenty two and what comes up
must come down. And the g Men went in and
took care of the aforementioned Vikes in their own building.

(01:30:01):
And the Giants unfortunately have the misfortune of having to
play the AFC East and the NFC WST as part
of their non divisional schedule. Hard to find wins in
that rundown. They're gonna have to make a couple of
long trips to the West coast. The Niners ain't gonna
be easy, The Seahawks ain't gonna be easy. I'm not
sure about the Rams yet, not sold on them at all,

(01:30:23):
but they're gonna compete. Wouldn't go to sleep on a
Arizona Well, that's the story for a different day. The Chargers.
Something's weird with this team, and not just their coach.
Their star power is undeniable, as as is their inability
to play consistent defense, they can't close out big games,

(01:30:44):
and they don't know what it's like to take a
conservative approach. I'm looking at you, Brandon Staley, and I
think he's the wrong guy to ban this ship. So again,
proved me wrong. Would not surprise me if the Chargers
went seven to ten this year when I got Kellum
calling plays, and hopefully they can stay healthy. And again,

(01:31:06):
the Chargers are a team that confounds you because of
the talent they have. But right out of the gate,
early in the season, they got to face Miami, Denver,
the Jets, the Ravens, even the Lions. Not going to
be easy. Finally, the one team that made the playoffs
last year and I'm fairly confident probably won't make the

(01:31:26):
playoffs this year, and that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
They did win eight games, yes, believe it or not,
eight games last year was good enough to win the
NFC South. You remember that, and they had a guy
named Tom Brady who just was able to win games
on reputation. So do you expect do you expect the
Tampa Bay Bucks to actually improve without Tom Brady? And

(01:31:50):
you add to that, they've got a disjointed offensive line,
and a rookie play caller and Dave Canalis. I don't know.
I don't know. And it also raises the question is
Baker Mayfield good? He just won the job? While we're
at it, why don't we talk about that coming up?
Is Baker Mayfield actually good? I'll give you my thoughts

(01:32:10):
and I'll give it some context. I'm Bernie fraddle wol
Come to your line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tarrack dot Com studios. Give you lock. You're listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Back
on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Come to
your life from the tarret dot Com studios here in
Las Vegas. You know they say numbers don't lie. However,

(01:32:31):
numbers without context can be very misleading. Baker Mayfield has
won the job in Tampa Bay, and Baker Mayfield has
been a polarizing individual since he entered the league in
twenty eighteen. Part of it self inflicted, but he's also
done some things too. Let's be honest. Okay, remember last

(01:32:52):
fall when he joined the Rams and three days later
he leads to He leads the Ram to the crazy
victory over the Raidiers and the final seconds to that
Thursday night game, and his quarterback rating was eighty six
point five, which is the same as Mitched Trubisky, better
than Brett fav even better than Dan Marino. So by
that measure, he'd be better than the backup right. And
here's where numbers get weird. His complation rate was sixty

(01:33:15):
two percent. It's better than Cam Newton, Eli Manning, Matt Hasselbeck.
They were all successful starting quarterbacks who played in the
NFL for a decade or more than a decade. Mayfield
has an interception rate of two point nine percent. That's
the same as Matt Hasselbeck and Mark Bulger. Both those
guys made multiple Pro Bowls. Joe Namath, Carson Wentz, Jay Cutler.

(01:33:40):
They have the same touchdown rate as Baker Mayfield four
point six percent. Do you want to do these analytics?
You want to do this stuff all day? You got
do the folks who love analytics right well, By the way,
Mayfield has a better touchdown rate than Matt Ryan, Jim Plunkett,
Eli Manning, those they've all played in Super Bowls. Where
am I going with this? So we don't know what

(01:34:00):
Baker Mayfield is going to do? In Tampa Bay. We
don't know Willie succeeded, but remember when Mayfield was a rookie,
he took the reins of a team that won only
one game in the prior too seasons. Nothing against you know,
Hugh Jackson, but Man Cleveland was one in thirty one. Now,
Mayfield had a six and seven to one loss record

(01:34:23):
in the thirteen games he started as a rookie. But
again let's give that some context. The Browns had been
one in thirty one the previous two seasons. Oh, by
the way, Mayfield he threw twenty seven touchdown passes that year,
and that was a rookie record until Justin Herbert surpassed
it two years later in twenty twenty. Now, you can

(01:34:45):
say that Mayfield and the Browns underperformed in twenty nineteen,
but they more than made up for it in twenty twenty,
even though Odell Beckham missed most of the year with
an injury. Mayfield realized the potential in the team was evident,
and his potential was evident. His rookie campaign, he threw
for the second most yardge in Brown's history for a

(01:35:05):
single season, only Bernie Cosar back in nineteen eighty six
had a more prolific season, and that team was one
game away from going to the Super Bowl if Ernest
Biner doesn't fumble on the goal line. Mayfield also threw
more than three times as many touchdowns. He threw twenty
six touchdowns eight interceptions during the regular season when he
led the Browns to eleven wins. Then Mayfield then threw

(01:35:29):
three touchdown passes I think it was in the wildcard
game against Pittsburgh and got Cleveland their first franchise playoff
win in twenty five years. Baker Mayfield, before you're two
hard out him. Remember now he's playing for his eight
head coach and his sixth offensive coordinator in his sixth
NFL season. This has been a topic of discussion, and

(01:35:52):
there are some folks that thought Kyle Trask would beat
him out. I never thought he would. I'm not trying
to put Baker Mayfield in the Hall of Fame here.
What I'm trying to do is paint a picture because
Mayfield has a lot of diverse experience. Some of it's good,
some of it's not as good. But that's his story.
He's twenty eight years old, right. Eric Mangini, who's considered

(01:36:14):
a very smart guy who is the right hand man
of Bill Belichick, basically said he believed that Todd Bowles
and the new offensive coordinator, Dave Connally's will well back
Baker Mayfield. He said it before camp even started. He
ended up being right. They're gonna feel more comfortable with
Baker Mayfield because he has experience and he actually has

(01:36:36):
some poise, and he actually has a presence, and that
comes with age and getting a chance to play. That's
what Eric Mangini said. Now, if if Mayfield doesn't perform,
then Trask will probably be right right behind them. So
what happens. What happens is next year. Let's give this
some context, okay, because the numbers which I shared with you,

(01:37:00):
interception rate, touchdown rate, completion rate, comparing them against other quarterbacks,
those are just numbers. And as I said jokingly earlier,
you know, there's liars, damn liars, and then there are statisticians.
So those are what the numbers say. So what about
the context. Mayfield's been in the league since twenty eighteen,

(01:37:21):
But that's ad one word. He's only been in the
league since twenty eighteen, So if we're being fair, there's
still time to improve those numbers even more. He's got
to be in an environment where the quarterback can play
a huge role, and now he is this season Mayfield alone.
Check that. Last season Mayfield alone worked with three different

(01:37:42):
head coaches and two different offensive coordinators. And in Cleveland,
in his four seasons, he worked with three different offensive coordinators.
And the Browns, how don't care what anybody says, there
are a notoriously dysfunctional franchise regardless of who's there. But
on the field, Mayfield somehow managed to take a one
to thirty one team and help get him to the

(01:38:03):
playoffs within three years. Wasn't exactly blessed with an embarrassment
of riches around him. In twenty eighteen, the Browns wide
receivers only caught sixteen touchdown passes for the entire wide
receiver group. Take take Green Bay. DeVante Adams caught thirteen
alone by himself. Back then, who was the Browns leading receiver.

(01:38:25):
Jarvis Landry caught eighty one balls. They're tight end David
and Joku caught fifty six. And then there was their
running backs Duke Johnson Nick Chubb. They were catching passes
a bigger factor when Mayfield got to the Browns is
believe it or not, they were second in the league
and drop passes. Who knows why these things happen. As

(01:38:47):
a matter of fact, one particular week, I think it
was Week nine of the twenty eighteen season, the Browns
dropped more passes than anybody in the history of the
NFL in a single game. And I think during the
month they dropped six point three percent of their passes,
which is crazy. So and again I'm not mixed up.
Mayfield has has sometimes been his own worst enemy, but

(01:39:10):
in fact his most successful season was also for that
same Cleveland team in twenty twenty. Right, the pass catching
started to improve and they still have their drops, but
that was Kevin Stefanski's first season and Alex Van Pelt's
first season as the offensive coordinator, so they had kind
of high hopes, but they can never really sustain the success.

(01:39:34):
They had a good start. Then in twenty twenty one,
Mayfield has the shoulder injury. He missed three games that
very much effected the team's momentum. That was also the
year they decided to release. The Browns released Odell Beckham,
who promptly signs with the Rams and they go win
the damn super Bowl while he blows out his knee
in the Super Bowl. But I digress. So Baker Mayfield

(01:39:58):
leaves Cleveland, and Cleveland once again, upon his departure is
characterized as an organization who will forever live up to
its reputation as a as a notoriously dysfunctional franchise. So
what happens is Baker may feel good. Yeah, he actually
is good. He's better than you think. I think he'll

(01:40:20):
have his moments in Tampa Bay and he'll have some
moments where well, not so much. But he's in a
division with Derek Carr and New Orleans. I'm not a
car guy. He's in a division with a rookie quarterback
in Carolina. I'm a big price young guy, but rookies,
I mean, ask Aaron Rodgers. He was six and ten
as a rookie. Right, So we shall see what we

(01:40:43):
shall see. But numbers have a way of putting things
in the context and making you look at a situation
maybe a little differently. Does that guarantee that Baker Mayfield
has success this year? No, but he's got a shot,
and we're going to be watching and I would and
write him off just yet, coming up. Hard Knocks episode

(01:41:04):
three made some interesting observations, starting with Robert Sala's speech.
We'll chop it up and bring in the crew coming
up next, but first let's go back to our guy,
Nick Cope with the latest.

Speaker 6 (01:41:18):
All right, Bernie, We did have some news related to
the Buccaneers on Saturday. Their Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen
was placed on injured reserve with the knee injury. So
he is out for the season. Oh yeah, tough break.
This set the injury going back to training camp of
last season. He elected not to have surgery, was able

(01:41:41):
to play in the playoff game. That was it, and
then he tried to come back this year, but he's
not gonna be able to go.

Speaker 10 (01:41:46):
So a lot of talk if.

Speaker 6 (01:41:48):
This may be it for Ryan Jensen, so we will see.
Also some news for the Cleveland Browns. Coach Kevin Stefanski
said receiver Jaqeem Grant suffered a quote significant knee injury
during their preseason game against the Chiefs. Other NFL news,
Aaron Rodgers made his debut in a Jets uniform. He

(01:42:09):
threw a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson. Dolphins and Jaguars
cut their preseason game short after, Miami receiver Daywod Davis
was immobilized and then carted off the field on a stretcher.
He was taken to a local hospital. Dolphins announced that
he had movement in all his extremities. Raiders are running
back Josh Jacobs agreeing to a one year deal to

(01:42:30):
end his holdout. It's worth up to twelve million with
incentives and then with the Trey Lance trade. Cowboys quarterback
Will Greer is reportedly set to be cut, but now
before he bawled out in their final preseason game on Saturday.
For Greer, three hundred and two yards completed eighty three
percent of his passes with four total touchdowns. College football

(01:42:53):
had a couple of top fifteen teams in action for
Week zero. Number six USC close early with Sam Jose State,
but the Trojans pull away in the second half fifty
six to twenty eight. Caleb Williams had four touchdowns and
he also had four touchdowns for New Notre Dame quarterback
Sam Hartman. He shined in his debut as the number
thirteen Irish Cruise pass Navy forty two to three. Some

(01:43:17):
notable finals in baseball, the Rangers beat the Twins six
to two, snapping an eight game losing streak, and the
Mariners crushed the Royals fifteen to two. Texas and Seattle
still tie to top the Al West. Rain shut out
the Yankees three to nothing, and the Orioles beat the
Rockies five to four. Tampa is the top wildcard team
in the American League and the three back of Baltimore

(01:43:38):
in the division. Philly's still holding the top wildcard spot
in the NL. They cruise passed the Cardinals twelve to one,
Cubs ten to six, winners over the Pirates Chicago in
the second wild card spot, and they said four back
of Milwaukee in the division, and the brewershes keep on winning.
They've won seven straight, edging the Pirates on Saturday five
to four. Red's top the d Backs eight to seven,

(01:44:00):
eleven innings, since he is within half a game of
Arizona for the final wildcard spot in the NL. He
also had the Red Sox beating the Dodgers eight five,
and the Braves are the best record in baseball. They
won again seven to three against the Giants. Bernie back
to you, all.

Speaker 2 (01:44:15):
Right, Nick so hard Knock's Episode three had some moments
worth noting. The first of which was Robert Salah giving
this speech which he called the four levels of Competitors, right,
and it was a little hard to follow. And there's

(01:44:38):
something about Salo when he holds court in front of
the room, it looks to me awkward. When he starts
dropping f bomps. It doesn't sound like that's his nature.
And when he does it, it seems to be ineffective
and it feels clunky to me. But he went into
this thing about levels of competitor and how he's really

(01:45:04):
trying to preach the value of competition. But that's it's
not good enough just to be a competitor. You've got
to be at the level of competitor to where you're
taking other people with you. You are you are not only
competing hard, not just just because you're getting paid or
you're competing hard, not just because you want the glory.
You're competing hard because it's in your nature. It's what

(01:45:26):
you do, and you do it in such a way
and you become a force multiplier with your teammates. One
of the other moments was I enjoyed Randall Cobb speaking
truth about the Jets wide receivers and Aaron Rodgers and
this is the guy you might want to listen to
because he spent ten seasons in Green Bay helping develop

(01:45:48):
a relationship with Aaron Rodgers. And he wasn't afraid to
tell the other Jets receivers that if you're going to
work with Rogers, look, you better have your you better
he buttoned up right. If you make mistakes, and they
made a lot of mistakes in the room today and
basic stuff, little stuff. He goes, we can't have that,
and Randall Cobb wan want to tell him if he

(01:46:10):
doesn't trust you or quote, if he don't trust you,
he not gonna throw you the ball. And that's federal leadership.
Randall Cobb was showing you went on to say, it's
all cool right now, but I'm telling you one day
Rogers is gonna lose his ish. It's gonna happen if
it continues to go the way it's going right now,
because if he don't trust you, he's not gonna throw
you the ball. I can promise you that if you

(01:46:30):
don't trust you, he don't like throwing interception. So if
he don't trust you, you're not gonna run the right route.
He is not gonna throw it now. Cob knows a
thing or two what he's talking about. He caught forty
seven touchdowns from Aaron Rodgers during his tenure with Green
Bay and over six thousand receiving yards. By the way,
at the end of the show, kind of a cute
little moment with his two sons. His wife's pregnant and

(01:46:53):
the little boy says, mom, I want to have a
baby in my tummy too, so Izie. As the hard knocks,
you know, twenty twenty three iteration, episode three continues going on,
You're starting to see more of these human moments. I'm
a big Quinn Williams fan. Dude can play. He's a
very rich man. He just dinked a four year, ninety
six million dollar extension. But believe it or not, even

(01:47:17):
quinnin Williams has in securities. Now. They had this joint
practice against Tampa Bay. Fights kept breaking out every two
minutes and somebody in the Buccaneers receiving corps commented that
Quinn Williams was well, well, it was Mike Williams, actually,
he says, Mike Williams called me fat. That's what Williams

(01:47:38):
till his teammates. He called me fat.

Speaker 5 (01:47:40):
Bro.

Speaker 2 (01:47:40):
He called me. Mike Evans called me fat, and that
really bothered him. The camera captured that he went up
to Mike Williams and said, Mike Evans, excuse me, and said, Bro,
I lost weight at this offseason. I look fat and
now I'm self conscious. Bro. One of his teammates say, well,
would say you're not skinny. I think you're fit for

(01:48:02):
a non skinny person. Do I look good to be
three hundred pounds? Okay, cool?

Speaker 10 (01:48:08):
Right, that was the best part of the episode.

Speaker 2 (01:48:11):
Okay, go ahead, Nick, jump in there. What did you
have some thoughts on this?

Speaker 6 (01:48:14):
No, no, I just really loved the Quinn Williams thing,
how it just really bothered him, and maybe partly that
it was coming from Mike Evans, a guy who's a
household name at receiver and Quinn Williams like, eh, I'm
pretty good at my job. Like, yeah, I don't call
me fat, but I love the I forget who the
teammate was. And you're fit for non Yeah, you're fit

(01:48:34):
for a non skinny person.

Speaker 10 (01:48:36):
That was the line of the night for me.

Speaker 2 (01:48:38):
That was that was a good line. He was honest.

Speaker 6 (01:48:40):
Mike Clemens, I feel you on Sola though it does
it's something just that it's hard to pin down. But
it's like I don't really buy it, and I can't
figure out exactly what it is. I think maybe you're
onto it that it doesn't seem natural when when he's cursing,
But like, I don't know. I remember John Gruden and

(01:49:01):
he's obviously a quirky guy and he's but I bought it.
I bought him, you know, giving those speeches in front
of the team. But for some reason with sala it
just doesn't quite land.

Speaker 2 (01:49:16):
I agree. Look, you swear. He's kind of an art form.
I mean Bill O'Brien when he was on Hard Knocks
a few years ago, he was dropping F bombs like
he could have been in the cast to Harlem Knights,
which is the all timer for F bombs. Unreal. Right now,
when Robert Salad does it, it just feels a little
clunky and it doesn't really feel like it's his nature. Now,

(01:49:38):
I've played for coaches who swear and played for coaches
that don't swear. All styles work, all styles fail. You've
got to be yourself. And I know that sounds like
trite phraseology, sounds like cliche. But if you're inauthentic. People
have that sixth sense, right, So when Robert Salad is
dropping those F bombs, it just doesn't sound natural to me.

(01:49:58):
I can't tell you exactly why, but they're almost the
word loses its effectiveness when he uses it, right, he's dead.
Remember at the beginning, did you see episode one? He
came out with some F bombs early abought the offensive.
I'm like, okay, this doesn't work now. I enjoyed that
interaction with Quinn Williams and Mike Evans and his own teammate,

(01:50:20):
but I'm gonna skip to the chase here, and do
you remember the end when Woody Johnson comes in and
where's that mister t Starter's kit with his big woody chain.

Speaker 10 (01:50:29):
Oh my gosh. I was kind of cringing at that too.

Speaker 6 (01:50:32):
The guys seem to enjoy it, but it's like, Okay,
here comes old guy trying to relate to the young
guys or something.

Speaker 2 (01:50:41):
Well, it's good to be the king, right, and it's
what's the golden rule? And he has the gold makes
the rules. They're laughing at the boss's jokes, that's all
they're doing. But I'm telling you though, Nick, and he's
gonna let you weigh in on this too. Look, there
was a subtext here. Okay, you don't get to be
Woody Johnson. You may I'm the most popular guy. But

(01:51:03):
look what he did. He comes walking in with that
woody chain. What do you think that thing costs? Seriously?
Which surprised me. If it cost thirty grand I don't know.
What do you think a lot of bling man I have?

Speaker 6 (01:51:14):
Yeah, I would say minimum five figures, but I would
imagine it's at least six, but could be beats me.
I haven't been in the market for anything close to
that much buling.

Speaker 2 (01:51:26):
Even if I was, I wouldn't wear the damn thing.
That's just not me. But the point I'm making here's
where I'm going with my amateur psychology. I realize it's
against a lot of psychology to practice psychology without a license,
but I do it often. So here's the deal. He
comes in and addresses the group, wear's the chain, takes
off the jacket, looks dorky as hell. However, he's looking

(01:51:49):
out there and saying, hey, man, I signed off on
Aaron Rodgers one hundred and ten million dollars. I signed
off on Quinna Williams ninety six million. I signed off
on this guy. That guy I agree to bring in
Dalvin Cook gave me point six million. All right, man,
I've been spreading it. I've been spreading the chuddar. Now
you guys got to come through for me. That's what

(01:52:11):
I read out of that. Very calculating, perhaps not entertaining,
although they played along right, I thought, NICKI that was
a veiled message to the team. You know, I've given
you the resources, I've paid the players. We've brought a
Hall of Famer in here. Now it's up to you

(01:52:32):
guys to go make it happen. Yeah, that was my read.
What was your read?

Speaker 6 (01:52:38):
Yeah, honestly, I didn't really take too much from that scene,
but I think you're right. I mean, it's just kind
of an extension of you know, when Sala was getting
on the offensive line in the previous episode. Hey, we
got everyone else doing their job. You guys got to
do your job. There is this this pressure here because
there's a finite amount of time that Aaron Rodgers is

(01:52:59):
going to be playing for them, and no one knows
if it'll be a year or two, and probably not
beyond that. We would think, so I there is I
think you're right that that kind of undertone underlying everything
that Look, hey we're having fun right now training camp,
See and Aaron throw the ball around, but we got
to get to business and we got to make this

(01:53:20):
work here, and we've got a ticking clock in order
to do it.

Speaker 2 (01:53:25):
Yeah, undertone, I think is the operative word here. Ethandar
would you like to weigh in on any of these
things that we've talked about.

Speaker 4 (01:53:35):
Yeah, I mean, you know, what you guys are saying
is pretty much everything I would say. But yeah, for
the for the Jets, it'll just be for me. When
I was watching it, you know, I was just it
was came to my it was pretty obvious to me
that the O line is no good for the Jets,

(01:53:56):
And that's obvious, and you know that's going to be
maybe a big issue for them. But I don't think
Rogers and the receivers are gonna have much of an
issue because Garrett Wilson, I feel like it's going to
be an absolute stud. So even if like the other
guys aren't picking it up, I think he's gonna have
a breakout season.

Speaker 9 (01:54:14):
So, uh, Rogers is in good hands.

Speaker 4 (01:54:17):
He's he's an MVP he's a Super Bowl champion veteran.

Speaker 9 (01:54:21):
He'll be all right.

Speaker 2 (01:54:24):
A Rogers I think is is you know, he'll be
the reason whether or not the Jets go anywhere, and
I think that the season has to play out. For me.
There's a there's a dynamic to Hard Knocks. It's it's
quantum physics. The cameras are there, it's it's it's not normal.
I think part of what Salid does is panda the cameras,

(01:54:45):
and then they have sort of these gratuitous, you know,
human interest stories. Some some work, some don't. They're not
cutting players anymore like they used to live. But as
far as the overall vibe of Hard Knocks this year,
irrespective of the content, are you enjoying it or not?

Speaker 9 (01:55:01):
Ethan, Yeah, I'm enjoying it.

Speaker 4 (01:55:03):
And when it comes to Salah, I agree with you
guys on you know, he doesn't really sound too authentic.
He sounds like he's forcing it. But we'll see what happens.
You know, wins and losses do the talking.

Speaker 2 (01:55:17):
That's it. Wins and losses do the talking. Man, it's
it's a bottom line business coming up top of the hour. Hey,
you know it, you love it. You can't leave without it.
What kind of brand new fool are you? And what
my name? You've got both Ethan and Nick jumping in
tonight on that but coming up, We've talked a lot
about quarterbacks tonight, from Baker Mayfield to Aaron Rodgers, to

(01:55:42):
Bryce Young to Matt Stafford. Right on down the line.
There's a quarterback of the NFC South that's getting a
lot of play. He's a good dude. However, he's sixty
three and seventy nine as a starter, and he's going
to be the guy to put this team over the top.
The question about this man, can he be great when

(01:56:03):
the situation demands greatness? I'm not so sure. I'll tell
you why, and I've brought receipts. I'm Bernie Frattle or
come to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Studios, tire Act dot Com, stick and State you

Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
Back on the Bernie Fattle Show. Fox Sports Radio come
to live after Tarak dot Com studios here in Las Vegas,
top of the arrow. Kind of brand new fool of you,
followed by what my name? All Right? There's high hopes
for Derek Carr in New Orleans, Fax. As facts, he
was sixty three and seventy nine as a starter for
the Raiders. Not great on third down, not great in

(01:57:29):
the red zone. He perked up. I perked up when
he said that he was very upset the way it
ended here, and he didn't. He thought it was money related.
And you spend nine years in a place you have
all the records you played at a high level. Did
you play at high level Turk? If you did, then
why was your completion percentage last year ranking twenty ninth

(01:57:51):
among all NFL quarterbacks? Why was your pass yards per
game ranking fifteenth among all quarterbacks? Pass yards yards per
attempt ranked nineteenth. Touchdown to interception ratio through twenty four
touchdowns fourteen interceptions that ranked twenty first, passer rating only

(01:58:14):
eighty six point three that ranked twenty fourth. Now, he
talked about playing at a high level, but he didn't
rank in the top half in any statistical category. And
the Raiders were loaded with offensive weapons last year. Josh
Jacobs DeVante Adams right on down the line. So the

(01:58:36):
bottom line is he can say he put together stats,
those were yogi baristats because he did not lead to wins.
If Derek Carr is going to do it in New
Orleans again, please please save the speeches. Show me. Don't
tell me. I actually think Atlanta is the dangerous team
in that division. I've explained it before and I'll explain

(01:58:57):
it again, coming up, what kind of brand new fool
of you? Followed by what my name? Don't miss it.
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio,
and my name is Bernie Frattle. We're coming to you
live from the tyrac dot com studios Fox Sports Radio
in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Bernie Frattle Show keeps
rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle, which I

(01:59:19):
just said. And by the way, tyreck dot com we'll
help you get there and unmatch selection, fast free shipping,
free road aster protection in over ten thousand recommend it
installers tyraq dot com the way tire buying should be. Well,
we've come to that juncture in the show that time
of the week two am Pacific, five am Eastern. You

(01:59:39):
know you love it. You can't leave without it. Because
what we do is we take you around the globe
and we chronicle the behaviors, the odd ball behaviors that
some people love to engage in. Sometimes they're just simple, odd, stupid,
you know, events that cause people to be find them

(02:00:00):
sells in an uncomfortable position. Other Times it's more nefarious,
breaking the law. Many times they land these folks in jail.
But anyway you slice it, these are behaviors. These are
activities that people engage in that, no matter the result,
they always managed to leave you scratching your head and
asking yourself, what kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 3 (02:00:27):
So?

Speaker 10 (02:00:28):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 4 (02:00:31):
So?

Speaker 2 (02:00:31):
Tonight we bring you to Koweita County, Georgia, a town
of Arnco, Georgia, which I have never heard of. And
I'm guessing Nick, you've heard the term porch pirate, right,
I have, yes, And Ethan you've heard the term porch pirate,
right yep. So we're in this weird world we're living

(02:00:52):
in now, especially since since COVID so porch pirate is
something we've heard of. And Robin Swang, or meet Robin
Swanger of Kuweita County, Georgia, who's been identified as a
porch pirate, and typically a porch pirate is a term
that refers to a suspect, usually of stealing packages or

(02:01:15):
items from someone's doorstep. Now investigators have dubbed Robin Swanger
a porch pirate. Hold that thought, I'm gonna come back
to it. But see, this is a guy that's actually
got a body of work because deputies had recently been
at his house because they were called there due to
a domestic disturbance. So this gentleman actually has a body

(02:01:38):
of work. He's been charged with a couple accounts of
domestic vin violence, including battery, but at the time of
his arrest, he'd also been engaged and other oddball scratchhead
activity as a porch pirate. You see, Robin Swanger took
it to a whole new level. What he did. He

(02:02:01):
went past all the trust no trespassing signs, broke through
a gate, and investigators say he even blew past several
people when he helped himself to a wooden porch left
on a property. Yes, it was a full eight y
ten porch. So Robin Swanger is not only a porch

(02:02:21):
pirate for stealing Adams, He's a porch pirate for stealing
an entire porch.

Speaker 10 (02:02:28):
How did he do it? How did he take an
eight by ten porch?

Speaker 6 (02:02:33):
Did he have a flatbed he pulled a.

Speaker 2 (02:02:37):
Well, you ask a very good question, and that is
a detail I do not have. But according to the
Kuwita County Sheriff's Office and an investigator by the name
of Chris Stapler. Well, you know, he believed it probably
took a full hour for the entry and exit. Regardless,
he got it and it happened. Robin Swanger a legendary

(02:03:01):
porch pirate and oh, by the way, facing charges for
battery and domestic violence, which leaves us asking the question,
mister Swanger, what kind of brand new fool are you?
All right? Nickope, you've done this game before.

Speaker 10 (02:03:15):
What do you got for it?

Speaker 2 (02:03:15):
Buddy?

Speaker 6 (02:03:16):
All right, Bernie, We're gonna go to New England, specifically Boston, Massachusetts,
where Donado Fradioli and Magda Masri are set to get
married in Italy on August thirty first.

Speaker 10 (02:03:30):
So just around the.

Speaker 6 (02:03:31):
Corner you hear this story, go go go, Okay, they're
getting ready for their wedding day, which is now just
four days away, about a week and a half ago. Now,
they go to Boston City Hall, which, by the way,
is the ugliest building in the city.

Speaker 10 (02:03:46):
I lived there for six years. I can say that
I know the.

Speaker 2 (02:03:48):
City very well. Go ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 10 (02:03:50):
Terrible brutalist building.

Speaker 6 (02:03:51):
But they go, they get their marriage license, and then
they go out to dinner to celebrate. All is going
well until they get home, and then they find that
their golden retriever named Chucky, which apparently is short for
chicken cutlet, good old Chucky, he had gotten himself onto
the counter, or got his front pause up onto the counter,

(02:04:14):
and he had gotten a hold of Fradiroli's passport and
proceeded to chew through multiple pages, specifically all the important
ones in the front, in the back that have your
idea and information, the barcode in the back. He just
tore all that up unusable. So this of course happens

(02:04:34):
a week before they're.

Speaker 10 (02:04:36):
Due to leave.

Speaker 6 (02:04:36):
They're freaking out. They do the smart thing. They reach
out to their offices of local congressional representative, their senator, Fradiroli.
He ended up getting a new passport Wednesday, and then
they flew out on Friday, so they should be good
to get married in a few days. So this does
have a happy ending. But Dinado Frattioli, trusting you're a

(02:05:00):
year and a half old golden retriever to you know,
just sit idly by at home while you're gone for
several hours. What kind of brand new fool?

Speaker 2 (02:05:10):
Are you a brand new fool? And the reason you
heard me chockoling in the beginning, because the way that
that verbiage rolled off your tongue and Dinato Fratioli, I'm
thinking to myself, I think I had one of those
one night at Pizza hunt Yeah, beside salad. You know
what is that? Man?

Speaker 6 (02:05:25):
It figures the guy lives in Southea in Boston, right sah, Yeah,
you know.

Speaker 2 (02:05:29):
I know that area. Well, I've actually been to the
L Street Tavern more than once here good yeah, where
Good Wool Hunting was uh was filmed. I'll tell you
a story about that. Sunday A. Boston's in neat city
and it's got a lot of diverse you know, architecture, everything, everything. Okay,
all right, Ethan, you're a veteran this game, so we're
expecting big things out of here. Ethan. What do you

(02:05:50):
got for us tonight? Buddy?

Speaker 9 (02:05:51):
All right, We're gonna go to uh Reno, California.

Speaker 2 (02:05:56):
Renal, California. Is there such a place as Renal, California?

Speaker 10 (02:05:58):
Oh it's Nevada.

Speaker 9 (02:06:00):
Wait, No, I met sorry, I met Lake Tahoe.

Speaker 2 (02:06:04):
I met like, hey, man, it's all good. You know.
When I woke up this morning. You know, I've been
to Dublin, you.

Speaker 9 (02:06:08):
Know, I've not been to Dublin.

Speaker 2 (02:06:10):
I've been to Doublin, Ohio, which is in North Columbus,
but not Dublin, Ireland.

Speaker 4 (02:06:15):
Bernie coming out here firing, Okay, onto Lake Tahoe, not Reno.

Speaker 2 (02:06:21):
It's all good. It's all good.

Speaker 4 (02:06:23):
So there is a what do you call it? There's
a bear. Yeah, there's a big bear called Hank the tank.
Hank the tank, Hank the tank that is going inside homes,
breaking in around twenty eight homes and one hundred and
fifty two reports.

Speaker 9 (02:06:43):
Of Hank the tank going into homes.

Speaker 4 (02:06:47):
So one of the civilians in the township of Tahoe
Keys ended up get like putting a tent out in
the the woods and capturing the bear. No luck. But
you know what kind of brand new for are you?

Speaker 2 (02:07:07):
Yeah, putting a tent not to catch a bear. That's
a new one on me.

Speaker 9 (02:07:10):
Man, crazy, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:07:13):
So you trap the bear in the tent.

Speaker 4 (02:07:16):
Yeah, you had to like kill the bear with a
gun and then you'd probably get charged with killing the bear.

Speaker 9 (02:07:24):
You know, it's a tough, good thought.

Speaker 2 (02:07:25):
Wait, by the way, did you guys see the movie
Cocaine Bear?

Speaker 4 (02:07:28):
No?

Speaker 9 (02:07:28):
I didn't. I hear it's great, though, is it really
that I I have?

Speaker 2 (02:07:32):
I haven't fired on it yet, but I might. It's
it's making the rounds through my Netflix and ow whatever
Prime or what have you seen Cocaine Bear? Nick?

Speaker 3 (02:07:39):
I have not.

Speaker 6 (02:07:40):
I was mildly curious if I happened to stumble upon
it on TV or something, I'd give it a chance,
just because it's so outrageous. By the way, I just
know Hank the tank is apparently a female bear. So
that yeah named Hank h.

Speaker 2 (02:07:57):
Well, that'd pissed him off right there. So anyway, all right,
good stuff, Ethan, appreciate you man. All right, guys, another
rousing edition of what kind of brand new Fool of You?
Featuring just a little bit of about everything is in
the books, and so we are often running to our
second favorite bit, which we lovingly refer to as what
my name? Here we go, all right? This week? In

(02:08:21):
nineteen eighty nine, I was given a lifetime ban for
betting on baseball, allegedly Ethan Miller. What my name? He wrote,
Pete Rose, nicely done. Start the day with a kulk,
Start the day with a winner. Apart, all right, this
was a little tougher, but you guys can get it.

(02:08:42):
This week in nineteen eighty eight, I fought Mike Tyson
on the streets in New York at two in the morning,
and a fight that went in to become infamous. Nick Cope,
What my name? Oh boy?

Speaker 10 (02:08:58):
Uh, Larry Holmes.

Speaker 2 (02:09:00):
Not Larry Holmese you you're gonna remember this name when
I say it? All right? This week in nineteen eighty eight,
I fought Mike Tyson on the streets of New York
City at two in the morning, in a fight that
became infamous. Ethan Miller, What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:09:16):
I'm not sure I'm at the past.

Speaker 2 (02:09:18):
It's all good, buddy, Mitch blood Green, Google it, Mitch
blood Green. They probably got the damn fight on YouTube.
It became famous and infamous. All right, all right, there's
already Heisman talk guy. Now that college football has started,
I am the last non quarterback to win the Heisman.

(02:09:41):
Here's a clue. I played it Alabama. Ethan Miller.

Speaker 9 (02:09:44):
What my name wasn't it Davante Smith not Devant?

Speaker 2 (02:09:50):
Wait a minute, good for you? Yes, was Devonte Smith's
an eagle? You say my buttthan I would have been
the brand new fool. Somehow. I had actually written down,
Derrick Henry, shame on me.

Speaker 6 (02:10:03):
Oh that's funny because the Alabama clue also worked.

Speaker 2 (02:10:08):
My goodness, good night, good night, folks. You've been a
great audience. Don't forget to try to send my boonless spaghetti.
Got good job, Ethan double whammy? There all right? I
am the only two time winner of the Heisman Trophy,
Nick Cope, What my name?

Speaker 6 (02:10:24):
The former running back of the Ohio State University Archie Griffith.

Speaker 2 (02:10:29):
There you go. You guys are on fire. Three three
out of four so far. Continuing on with the Heisman theme,
I am the only defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy.
Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:10:51):
I'm pretty sure wasn't it, Oh? Nick, comeing out?

Speaker 2 (02:10:57):
S Desmond Howard Right, Desmond was actually a wide receiver
and a kick returner. But you've got the right school
to try it one more time.

Speaker 10 (02:11:05):
It's is a Charles Woodson.

Speaker 2 (02:11:07):
Charles Woodson. That was, of course, the great nineteen ninety
seven season that Michigan and Nebraska won the fictional national championships.
That year, Charles Charles had that interception where he went
up with one hand that kind of sealed, by the
way for posterity. I covered that team. He actually lined

(02:11:29):
up a few times at wide receiver, but he really
is the only defensive player to ever win the Heutsman.
All right, this just happened this week in Major League baseball.
All Right, I'm now batting one to eighty seven this season,
which is the lowest average in baseball history for anyone
who has over five hundred and fifty played appearances. Give

(02:11:50):
you a clue, Ethan, he plays for your Phillies the midder,
You got it.

Speaker 9 (02:11:54):
That would be Kyle Schwarber.

Speaker 2 (02:11:56):
Kyle Schwarber, the pride of the University of Inana. Guys
are just just killing it tonight. All right. Last year,
in my first ever NFL playoff game, I threw four
picks in the first half, but then came back and
threw four touchdowns in the second half to lead my

(02:12:18):
team to victory. Nick Cope, what my name?

Speaker 6 (02:12:21):
It's gotta be Trevor Lawrence, Right, it has gotta be
Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 2 (02:12:26):
So you guys, you guys killed it, chilled it. You
got Pete Rose to Pete Rose, Archie Griffin, Charles Woods,
and Kyle Schwarber, Trevor Lawrence, and then my Alabama, folpash.
Should we do one more, guys, Let's do one more?
All right? Since I talked about the Detroit Lions in
their playoffs and the last time they won the playoff game,

(02:12:49):
well they actually won the division too. So the last
time the Detroit Lions won the division, I was their
head coach Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:13:01):
Oh, I'm not sure?

Speaker 2 (02:13:04):
All right, no problem. The last time the Detroit Lions
won their division, I was their head coach, Nick Cope.
What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:13:16):
I got no idea? I mean the only Wayne Fonts Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:13:19):
Wayne, Wayne Fox Captain captain Wayno, all right, Let's let's
have one more for the hell of it. This one's
not easy. This might surprise you, but it's pure trivia,
Believe it or not. I had more touchdown passes in
the National Football League all forty yards or more than
any other starting quarterback Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:13:44):
Tom Brady?

Speaker 2 (02:13:46):
Not Tom Brady? Last season, I had more touchdown passes
in the National Football League and forty yards or more
than any other starting quarterback. Nick Cope, what my name?
Joe bur Not Joe Burrow, Believe it or not. Just
Tua to a talkab lowe because of tyrenk Hill. Oh hell,

(02:14:07):
let's end on a good one. You guys are gone
this way, all right? This is this week. This week
in two thousand and eight, I set the world record
in the one hundred meters nine point sixty nine seconds.
You're gonna get this one, Ethan.

Speaker 4 (02:14:22):
You gotta isn't that a you sain bolt.

Speaker 2 (02:14:26):
Bamn, just like just like Angelo's on ninth and a
cheese sticks sandwich coming through. Baby. Great job, guys, great
job on what my name? Great job on brand new fool.
I cannot get donaal Fradiroli out of my mouth. I
am screwed. A great job by Mark and all the imaging,

Taylor the empty backfield throws over the middle of as complete.
Then it's a touchdown to Dorian Singer. Touchdown USA. There
first of the year. Dorian Singer that Arizona last year,
a great receiver, six touchdowns, eleven hundred yards and his
first catch as the Trojan is a t D.

Speaker 2 (02:16:09):
I'd like to see the Trojans do well this year.
I am greatly concerned about that defense. Right on schedule though,
heading into Saturday night. The last six seasons, Lincoln Riley
money in game one wins wins by an average margin
to thirty six and a half points. Now they beat

(02:16:31):
San Jose State by twenty eight. So if you laid
to thirty one, which I did not, I would have
been tempted, but I didn't. You didn't get the cover,
but nonetheless USC gets the win in tonight's progressive power
play that they had brought to you by Progressive Insurance.

Are you a USC fan or that just kind of
something that caught your fancy tonight? Are you there? My man?

(02:17:12):
All right? Pretty good Marcell Marceau impression there? Nick your thoughts.
I know you're not a USC guy, You're a UC other.

Speaker 6 (02:17:17):
Guy, right, Yeah, I am so yeah, I've been hearing
these USC highlights all night here at the studio. But
I mean, you can't deny how good that offense is.
The Zachariah Branch, the freshman with that kick return. He
also caught another touchdown. The defense still looked a little

(02:17:38):
shaky there early on, and then once the offense was
able to put a couple of quick scores and make
it a two to three score game, then you think
it sends San Jose State that they were starting to
press a little bit. But in that first half it
didn't seem like the defense was really all that different
for USC than it was last year. Mistackles. You know,

(02:17:59):
Sales States not a bad team, but they're they're a
middling Mountain West team and they yeah, they're.

Speaker 2 (02:18:06):
Ping the finish fifth in the Mountain We yeah, and.

Speaker 6 (02:18:08):
They were reeling off some really big chunk plays in
that first half. So, I mean, it's it's one game,
but right out of the shoot it was very reminiscent
of last year for USC and their defense.

Speaker 2 (02:18:20):
It fell reminiscent to me too. Let's not forget Utah
took down USC and then USC had all they had
a healthy lead against Tulane, right, they couldn't hold it.
How do you get that taste out of your mouth?
With all due respect to the Tulane Green Wave, the
way they beat as seeing that ball game, that can't
leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Speaker 6 (02:18:40):
No, But I think at the same time, I once
USC lost the Pac twelve championship to Utah and they
weren't getting in the playoff, you know, they even though
it's still one of the New Year six, when the
playoff was right there for you, I'm sure that you
know it's a little bit harder to get up for that.
But for you, USC, their front half of the schedule

(02:19:02):
is very very manageable. Here this season, we still might
not know a ton about USC until you get to
mid October when they're gonna have to play Notre Dame
on the road, and then in November in succession, you've
got Oregon, Washington, U C.

Speaker 3 (02:19:19):
L A.

Speaker 10 (02:19:19):
I think Utah is in late October twenty first.

Speaker 6 (02:19:23):
Yeah, so they've got a loaded back half of the schedule.

Speaker 2 (02:19:26):
Well, they're gonna you know, they host Arizona and then
they h then they then they die in frisky.

Speaker 6 (02:19:33):
Arizona's got they got an offense at least, but I don't.

Speaker 10 (02:19:37):
Know, Well, they got to get it high scoring game.

Speaker 2 (02:19:39):
USC gets the game at home. But here's here's what
you gotta watch. They do have that gauntlet. The following week,
they travel to Notre Dame and it'll be a night
game at Notre Dame. And from what I saw from
Sam holland Notre Dame today, uh that was that was
an impression. Then they travel back home to play you,

(02:20:00):
then they got to go back on the road to
play Cal. Then you finish up with Washington, Oregon and UCLA.
That's a bit of a gauntlet. So I don't know
what s He's gonna do this year, although they're gonna
be exciting on offense, that I can tell you. Hell,
Stevie Wonder can see that. All right. Coming out, We've
got Chris Purfenz World of Soccer, we got the kiss
seat around the world, and even a reference to soccer

(02:20:22):
zonn Bill Belichick talking about Jose Mourinho. So you want
to hear that. But first let's go back to our guy,
Nick Cope with the latest.

Speaker 10 (02:20:29):
All right, thank you, berniees.

Speaker 6 (02:20:31):
The final score of that win for USC fifty six
twenty eight, Number six USC taking down San Jose State
and then Notre Dame no problems against Navy forty two
to three in favor of the number thirteen Irish. Some
other finals, Vanderbilt had to hang on there against Hawaii,
they led thirty five to fourteen and entering the fourth

(02:20:52):
quarter final score ended up being thirty five twenty eight
to the Commodoores San Diego State over Ohio. That was
a defensive battle, twenty to thirteen. Lontec beat FIU twenty
two to seventeen, UMass winning forty one to thirty over
New Mexico State and at Jacksonville State, making its FBS debut,
they beat UTEPS seventeen to fourteen. In the NFL, Dolphins

(02:21:16):
and Jaguars ended their preseason game midway through the fourth
quarter because Miami receiver Daywood Davis was immobilized and carted
off the field on a stretcher. He was taken to
a local hospital. Dolphins announced that he has movement in
all his extremities. Aaron Rodgers made his first appearance on
a football field in a Jets uniform and the drive

(02:21:39):
went well. He threw a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson
in their preseason game against the Giants. Earlier on Saturday,
you had the Raiders and running back Josh Jacobs agreeing
to a one year deal worth up to twelve million,
with the incentives ending Jacob's holdout. Brown's coach Kevin Stefanski
said receiver Jaqem Grant suffered a significant knee injury to

(02:22:00):
during their preseason game.

Speaker 10 (02:22:01):
Against the Chiefs.

Speaker 6 (02:22:02):
Buccaneers Pro Bowl set of Ryan Jensen placed on injured
reserve with a knee injury. In baseball, a couple notable
scores the Rangers finally snapped their losing streak at eight games.
They beat the Twins six to two. Still tie to
top the AL West because the Mariners.

Speaker 10 (02:22:18):
They won again.

Speaker 6 (02:22:18):
They crushed the Royals fifteen to two. Ray shout out
the Yankees three zip. They're the top all wildcard team.
Three back of Baltimore. Orioles got to win over the Ronkies.
Cubs they beat the Pirates ten to six. Congo second
wildcard team in the NL. Their four back of Milwaukee
Brewers have won seven straight. They beat the Padres five

(02:22:38):
to form Red's over the d Backs eight seven and
eleven innings, since he is within half a game of
Arizona for the final wildcard spot in the NL. Best
team in baseball, the Braves won again. They beat the
Giants seven to three. Red Sox beat the Dodgers eight five. Finally,
in golf, you got the final round of the Tour
Championship coming up later today. Victor Hovlin with a great

(02:22:59):
day on Saturday. He is now six shots clear of
the field at twenty on or Bernie, back to you
all right.

Speaker 2 (02:23:05):
And by the way, those UMass minute Men opened up
as a ten and a half point underdog at New
Mexico State. It was bet all the way down to seven.
It was a very popular bet among professional betters, and yep,
they cashed. They won their first road game in quite
some time. All Right, the World Cup may be over,

(02:23:26):
but the world of soccer continues. There's always news. There's
news on and off the field, and that's why every
week at this time we bring you Chris Burffett's World
of Soccer.

Speaker 1 (02:23:38):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international Drumoi, It's
all here in this report from the world of Soccer. Well, Bernie,

(02:23:59):
it's been an eventful week in the world of soccer.
So we're going to start with the champions of the
World in Spain, where the chief of Spanish Soccer is
refusing to resign following a firestorm of his own making.
This past week, Spain became the Champions of the World,
defeating England in the Women's World Cup final, and during
the metal ceremony, Soccer Federation chief Luis Rubiales grabbed a player,

(02:24:23):
Jennifer Hermosa, a Spanish player, and just kissed her on
the lips, unprompted, unscripted, unwanted. Louise claims he had consents
that was purely consensual. I don't think he understands the
meaning of that word, because Jennifer Hermosa has said that
at no point was consent given for him to just
kiss her on the lips. This has created a firestorm

(02:24:43):
of his own making and everyone wants him gone. As
with all things in twenty twenty three, Rubiales claims he
is the victim of quote unquote social assassination, a claim
that just flies like an arrow with no fletching whatsoever.
His real problem is that the backlash is pretty muchsal
The government of Spain is seeking his suspension. Meanwhile, the

(02:25:04):
World Championship squad all twenty three players are preparing to
boycott and not to play for their country again while
Rubiales remains in charge. It's just one of those moves
that seems just utterly incredible. As always with all things
in FIFA, these federations are being run by guys who
just don't seem to have the script in front of them,

(02:25:25):
who seem to have weird brains whirling in their head.

Speaker 13 (02:25:30):
And I think even if you have problems with some
of the political stances that soccer players in the women's
game take this isn't one of them.

Speaker 10 (02:25:37):
This is a pretty easy one. Why is this guy
being a creep?

Speaker 13 (02:25:40):
Moving on, Bernie, I'm sure you and I have talked
about Roumelo Lukaku before. Belgium's all time goal scorer, probably
one of my favorite players who have seen play in
the last few years, a brilliant striker of his own right,
and unfortunately the past few years have just not been
kind to his career.

Speaker 10 (02:25:58):
And yet, in.

Speaker 13 (02:25:59):
Spite of all that, he is the last pig piece
set to move in this transfer window which is going
to close here on September first. Lukaku, as I said,
he's Belgium's leading goal scorer. He had a remarkable career
for a long time with inter Milan. He took his
game to Chelsea and it bombed out in a pretty

(02:26:21):
bad way. Chelsea right now still owns his rights. He
was on loan back to inter Milan, his old club
last year. When he first arrived in Chelsea, it was
greeted with a lot of fanfare. This was a big
striking piece they could really use, but Lukaku really never
panned out for them, and now relations have gotten so
bad with the club that Lukaku hasn't spoken with their

(02:26:42):
new coach since July first. He's done with the club
and he's ready to go somewhere else, which now leaves
us with two questions. One where could he go? And
two could Lucaku still even be good as where he
could go? Bernie, that's kind of a little complicated. Lukaku
himself has some power in this and he rejected proposal
that would have seen him go to the Saudi club
Al Halal. As Saudi Arabia continues to make their footprint

(02:27:06):
for the Saudi Super League known in this transfer window,
it's alarmed a lot of English clubs in the relentless
courting of big names. It's caused several managers to weigh
in on just how much money they have thrown around
to get names like Lukaku and other players. Many of
those players have rejected it. Lukaku happens to be one
of them as well. Inter Milan was in the cards,

(02:27:28):
but apparently there was a fan backlash reportedly that has
taken that off the table. In Milan has now withdrawn
that proposal. Two more Italian clubs in play, Juventus and Roma. Juventus,
of course, is always in the market for big names,
but apparently, according to some reports and rumors, Lukaku isn't
really that keen on playing with Juventus. That leaves Roma

(02:27:51):
and Ruma is intriguing for a lot of reasons, mostly
because Jose Mourinho, who we've talked about before, Bernie, I
know you love Jose Mourinho, was a manager that has
worked with Lukaku for many, many years. A reunion could
be in the cards. We'll have to see as the
window keeps closing. As for whether Lukaku is still good,
I believe so. I believe he's just been under the

(02:28:14):
management of some pretty bad fits in the past few
years at Chelsea and inter Milan, and a fresh change
of scenery is exactly what he needs. He's thirty years
old for this year, he's entering that last stage of
his prime and he absolutely still has at least a
few good years under him. I think he just needs
the right spot. And finally, Bernie, we close it with

(02:28:34):
talking about a very somber story here as San Diego,
in spite of getting an MLS club, is going to
be saying farewell to one of their clubs, San Diego Loyal,
who plays in the USL Championship will be folding following
the twenty twenty three season. This is notable for several reasons.
Loyal was founded and co owned by Landon Donovan, the

(02:28:57):
All American great who played for them men's team for
so many years. A lot of the reasons why they're
closing has been that they have cited problems with finding
a near and long term stadium solution. Right now, they
play at the University of San Diego or six thousand
Seed Venue. They were trying to seek a modular stadium
of about fifteen to twenty thousand people to be seated there.

(02:29:18):
But it strikes odd because it's not like USL clubs,
and if you're unfamiliar with USL, USL forms the next
tier of what in the soccer period of play below MLS.
It's nothing as formal as say the English Football League
and the Premier League in England, but it's kind of
the assumed pecking order of American soccer. We've seen clubs

(02:29:40):
full before down there, but they've always kind of given
hints that we're in some sort of economic trouble. I
think a lot of this has to do with the
fact that MLS is committed to putting a team in
San Diego and Loyal. I believe the people in charge
realize that they are about to get crushed by this
new thing coming. USL clubs offer a lot more of
a grassroot, this organization of fans and fan culture for soccer,

(02:30:04):
versus something like MLS, which is wholly owned by massive
billionaires who then go and buy a club and give
MLS money to own that club. I would have thought
support would continue for it in spite of the fact
that there would be something like a MLS San Diego team,
but apparently not, and we are starting to give up
the ghost.

Speaker 10 (02:30:24):
It's a sad day.

Speaker 13 (02:30:25):
San Diego Loyal was one of the more cherish clubs
in the USL, and it's sad to see them go.
That's gonna do it for the world of soccer, Bernie,
as always, We'll see you next time, all.

Speaker 2 (02:30:35):
Right, Chris Pohfet's World of Soccer. By the way, he's right,
I do like Jose Mourinho. I get a kick out
of him. Chris invoked his name when we first started
doing this little feature about eighteen months ago, prior to
the lead into Men's World Cup, which was last fall.
You recall we started in the summer. And Jose Mourinho,

(02:30:57):
if you do some research, he's kind of like he's
very much what I would call the European soccer's version
of Bill Belichick in many many ways. So that Earling Holland.
You know, you hear the names, you hear the events,
and it never ends. So Chris purfets World of Soccer
coming up? Can Georgia? Can the Georgia Bulldogs? Three pete?

(02:31:19):
I say, yes they can, and yes, you know it
hasn't been done in ninety years. I'll tell you who
the last team did it, who had done it? And
by the way, why hasn't it been done in ninety years.
I'm gonna give you the reason why, and it's there
right in front of you. You don't stop to think
about it. But when I tell you, you're gonna be going,

(02:31:41):
you know you're right. That's why it hasn't been done
in ninety years. I'm Bernie Frattle. Where coming to you?

thank my broadcast team and they have been with me
since eleven pm Pacific time Saturday night. Patrick SWEEKA was
with us the first hour and Ethan Miller took over
for him and joined us from midnight to three Pacific

(02:32:28):
three to six Eastern. Of course, our technical producer Mark Ramsey,
great job tonight keeping the show tight with all the
imaging and let's not forget Nick Cope, our update anchor.
Also Guys chiming In. Great job on brand new fool,
what My Name and the various other sundry items that
we have chopped up on this week zero of college football,

(02:32:53):
among other things. Well, so now the college football is back.
It is officially back, and we'll have a slate Thursday
night and then well in the next weekend. It is here.
See it takes so long, It wasn't so bad. And
like I said earlier, look, you know you can make
fun of week zero, but it's like when your buddy
invites you over to have a pizza and you get
over there and you say, what are we gonna have tonight,

(02:33:14):
we're gonna have deep dish, or we're gonna have a
you know, Chicago style or New York. Then what and
he serves a frozen pizza, you might, you know, you
might give him a sade. After two seconds, then you're
diving into that pizza because you like pizza. Well, Week
zero is kind of like frozen pizza. It's not your
first choice, but you ain't complaining. You're gonna you know,
you're gonna put it. It's gonna be headed straight for
your face. All right, I'm glad college football's back. I

(02:33:36):
thoroughly enjoyed today. Are already there are story lines developing.
One of of course, the biggest one is can Georgia
three peet Now, unbeknownst to most, there actually was a
college that did this. They did it in nineteen thirty four,
thirty five, and thirty six. That would be, of course,
the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Why did I say, of course twice?

(02:33:57):
I hate when I do that, the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
So why hasn't a team We're three petd as pat
Riley would say, in the last ninety years, I have
decided on a reason, and I'm securing the knowledge that
this reason makes a lot of sense because until only recently,

(02:34:18):
the damn thing was decided on the field. Prior to that,
it was left to the you know, the whims of
voters for ap and upi hey. Nineteen seventy eight, USC
went down to Alabama, kicked their tail, I relieved in
twenty four to seven. Late in the fourth quarter, Alabama
got an excuse me touchdown. That USC team was phenomenal,

(02:34:39):
went on to beat Michigan and the Rose Bowl, and
they split the championship with Bama, even though USC beat
Bama and Obama. But the greater, the more egregious omission
for me, the nineteen sixty six Alabama Crinston Tide. There's
no reason they should have not been awarded the national

(02:35:02):
championship in nineteen sixty six because but it wasn't. But
they weren't because it wasn't decided on the field. That
Alabama team had won the championship in sixty four and
sixty five, and then what are they do in sixty six?
They go eleven to zero, eleven and oh they had
six shutouts. And in the final game of the season,
they play Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl and they molly

(02:35:24):
wop them, as Kevin Figures would say, thirty four to seven,
and they're not awarded the national championship. It was awarded
to Michigan State and Notre Dame. They split it because
they tied ten ten and what some folks believe is
one of the greatest games of all time ten ten
tie nineteen sixty six. Tell me Bama got robbed. Here's

(02:35:44):
what's really odd about this because the nineteen sixty four
Alabama team which actually won the national championship, lost to
Texas in their bowl game in the final, in their
final contest of the season, and yet they are awarded
the national championship. Go figure. That's why there hasn't been
a three peat because up until recently it was voted on,

(02:36:08):
not decided on the field, and I think the voters
were just not gonna give Bama a break in sixty six. Now,
winning the national championship three years in a rows no
easy task, but I believe Georgia's position to do it.
They're loaded, they got to replace their quarterback. You're gonna
meet Carson Beck, You're gonna hear about them. But you
still got Lad McConkey. You still got brock Bauers. They

(02:36:28):
got two stud transfer portal receivers from Mississippi State Missouri guys.
You're gonna hear Bart roerh Thomas, Dominic Levitt. They'll make
a major impact. How about the offensive line, Bet you
didn't know. Georgia returns four starters. Four guys were starting
experience and that is the core of your football team.

(02:36:49):
Georgia's defense, believe it or not, twenty twenty two was
allegedly the rebuilding year on defense. It's clear to see
when you look at the returning production. You start naming
the names. Georgia loaded on defense, load it on offense.
Their special teams will be good again. And in the
final analysis, I don't think Georgie is going anywhere. They'll
have another elite defense, a big playoffense, and let's not

(02:37:10):
forget a very manageable schedule. Take a look at their schedule.
They're gonna be heavily favored in every game until they
get to Neil and Tennessee November seventh. They'll be favored
in that game. Not by a lot, but they'll be favored.
I don't see them tripping up, which means they get
into the SEC championship game. This is where they live.
And if they're undefeated and lose, they can still be

(02:37:31):
invited to the Big Dance. And if Georgia gets back
into the playoffs, they'll close the deal. That's where they live. Yeah,
I think Georgia is going to three peat. We shall see.
It's gonna do it for the Bernie Frattle Show. But
don't go anywhere, keep it locked right here. Up next,
They're great. Andy Furman on Fox Sports Radio,
