(00:33):
jam packs show tonight a lot on the NFL and
the NFL preseason and look ahead some college football, a
developing store in the NBA that's fairly serious, and of
course the full high jinks later in the show. What
kind of brand new fool of you? And what my name?
And you know, as they say in Kirby Puckett, Minnesota,

(00:53):
it's gonna be lit. You know a lot of folks
poo poo the preseason. I'm not one of them. I
covered the Lions for ten years and I've always believed
the preseason does serve a purpose. It allows coaches to
evaluate position battles better, look at the progress of high
draft choices from one year to the next. There is
a financial component to the preseason that the NFL is

(01:16):
never gonna let go of. There will always be the preseason.
Well ninety nine, I'll be shocked. So you look for
your wins, as Mike Carmon would say, look for your wins,
and you know there will be stories emerging, and they
already are. And I'll give you an example. All right,
many many, many years ago, you may remember a young
man out of UCLA named Tim Rerightman who went on

(01:39):
to have a pretty good career with the Chicago Bears.
He was a tight end. Actually went to Mary Starr
to see high school in southern California. Same high school
is David Gascon. But I digress. So one of his
first games. Tim Rightman's first games was against the New
York Giants and the snarling Lawrence Taylor lined up across
him from the line of scrimmage stuff yelling at him.

(02:01):
Before the ball was snapped, he said, Sonny, when that
ball is snapped, I'm gonna go to the left whack
you on the side of the head. Bury your quarterback,
put him out of the game, and there's not a
damn thing you gonna be able to do about it.
Only he was nastier than that. Well, tim Rightman actually
knew the cadence, and he knew when the ball was

(02:21):
gonna be snapped, So precisely before the ball was put
into play, Rightman looks up at Lawrence Taylor and says,
mister Taylor, is that your left or my left? The
ball was snapped. Lawrence Taylor was temporarily stunned. Rightman fires off,
the ball hits him, and the nuts occupies him enough

(02:41):
for a play to go seven yards. Taylor looks up
at him says, not bad, Sonny, not bad. Those are
the kind of moments you start to look for, yes,
even in the preseason, and yes they exist. If you've
been paying attention, you notice now that I'm betting Daniel
Jones as a man crush on his new tight end favorite,

(03:03):
shiny Toy, Darren Waller. Jones didn't play in the Giants'
first preseason game, but he looked very sharp on his
first and only drive Friday, eight out of nine passes
sixty nine yards in a touchdown. Waller hauled in the
first two passes of the game, finished the day three
receptions for thirty yards. But you saw a glimpse of

(03:26):
what could come from the Giants passing offense. In the
regular season. They may not have the starmarquy wide receiver,
but after getting Waller from the Raiders for a third
round pick, there's no question he's going to provide a
significant boost to the Giants and their passing attack. So
that's one. And by the way, they all, you know,
Giants also got Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepherd. They added

(03:49):
Paris Campbell Cole Beasley. Look, they've got actually a pretty
good wide receiver room. You can't just it's not just
Darren Waller. And against the Panthers, Isaiah Hodgens, he had
a couple of big gains through the air. The drafted
a third round draft choice named Jalen Hyatt. He broke
free downfield ran for thirty three yards. And Paris Campbell,

(04:11):
who came out of Ohio State, was the star. Has
not really had a sensational NFL, but still has gas
in the tank. He looked impressive as well. So don't
go to sleep on the New York Giants all right now.
I'm actually I like Bryce Young. I like his traits.
I like the way he appears to have command. He

(04:32):
may be a little underwhelming in this Panthers offense, which
is incredibly vanilla. Young was three or six against the
Giants thirty five yards, had a couple series, but he
shows his mobility, he's accurate. At times, he looked a
little uncomfortable and frustrated because the Giants defense is also

(04:53):
pretty good. But here's the thing. I haven't seen Young
make any glaring mistakes or any head scratching decisions while
he's in the pocket. I haven't seen him turn the
ball over and make a dumb decision. That's what you
look for in a quarterback. I don't give a damn
if you can run like the wind or your uncle Rico. Again,

(05:16):
I'm not gonna mention names. Justin fields. No more speeches.
Don't tell me, show me, show me you can operate
from the pocket and get the damn ball out of
your hands. Watch film on Mac Jones. You may not
like Mac Jones. I don't care. He can play talk
to NFL stots, throw away your personal feelings or objective truths.
He's more athletic than you think. Check the records. He

(05:38):
actually ran the forty faster and had a higher vertical
leap than Patrick Mahomes At the combine. Yep, now again,
people are listening selectively. He's not better than Patrick Mahomes,
but he can play. He gets the ball out of
his hands. What the hell would you do if Matt
Patricia was your offensive coordinator? Hold that thought justin fields
would be a great story to see him do something

(05:58):
this year. But quarterbacks a position you play with your eyes.
You make mental snapshots, you receive the ball, you execute,
make your progressions, get the ball out of your hand,
your default mechanism. Campy to runs exact eight hundred yards
a game that worked so well last year. Why Bears
only win three games? I don't hear any excuses. Cam
Newton came out of Auburn through for Furder Yards's first game.

(06:19):
He could operate from the pocket. Facts Lamar Jackson, he
could operate from the pocket. I had his back at Louisville,
always believed he was very good. He proved it and
I think he still will continue to prove it. Kyler
Murray coming out of Oklahoma, he could operate from the pocket.
This is this new generation of mobile quarterbacks. But still
you have to be able to operate from the pocket.

(06:40):
Where am I going with this? I think Bryce Young
is going to be okay. He can play, he's smart,
he understands this offense. He's not over match mentally, and
that matters. In the National Football League. Now we've talked
about this eighteen to the last twenty years, a team
has gone from last to first. Happened to once in
twenty eighteen, including Mitch Turubisky, who completed sixty five percent

(07:03):
of his passes, got to the playoffs, almost had a
playoff win except for a double doink that wasn't good enough.
So Justin Fields is going to have to do better.
The Falcons, I believe, are in the discussion as the
team that will be making noise and they could be
a top ten scoring offense if they tightened some things up.
If you looked at him Friday against the Bengals, and

(07:24):
the Bengals have a very good defense, very good defense.
Lou Anarumo has put together a hell of a scheme
and he's got great players. But the Falcons marched down
the field in their first drive. Desmond Ritter spread the
ball out to five different receivers. Kyle Pitts looks very
healthy coming off his NCL tier. He had a solid
offensive drive. Ridder did but what happened The Falcons first

(07:48):
possession ends on a turnover, but they were moving the ball.
By the way, the Falcons checked that the Bengals with
the beneficiary of a pass interference play that should have
been called in Mike Hilton, that wasn't called and that
resulted in the interception. But if if some and bunths
were candy nuts, we'd all have a nice merry Christmas, right.

(08:09):
Another thing I noticed in that game. Now, we don't
really know what's happening with Joe Burrow. I think that
he will be ready for week one. Whether they start
of week one is a different story. We don't know.
The Bengals have a very feisty defense. They're going to
be in games with or without Joe Burrow. They want
to have Joe Burrow. Remember on July twenty seventh, he
strained his calf at practice and as Zach Taylor said, cool,

(08:31):
he'll be out several weeks. Sounds like a hockey injury, right,
but didn't specify a return date. They're crossing their fingers
that they have him back for week one. If not,
you'll plug in Trevor Simeon. But that defense held the
Falcons to three points in the first half. Even though
they gave up a bunch of big plays. They gave
up a bunch of yards, but they didn't give up
a bunch of points. And that's right out of the

(08:52):
Bill Belichick playbook. I don't give it, damn. You can
have five hundred yards a game. My job is to
keep you off the scoreboard. So I think this Cincinnati
defense is real. It's feisty, it's physical. They come after
you with bad intentions. They're really well coached. And I
will tell you And by the way, lou Annerum has
decided he suited up a lot of his starters. The

(09:14):
Bengals have a cornerback named Mike Hilton said he couldn't
even remember the last time he suited up for a
preseason contest. So and he was instrumental in that interception
that tipped the ball in the air and the passing
the red zone. So Cincinnati is going to need their
defense to limit their opposing teams. They're scoring opportunities until
Burrow gets back to one hundred percent, and they appear

(09:36):
they can do that. Just some quick takeaways on what
I'm seeing in the preseason so far. Tyre X sweepstakes.
They continue. We've had two winners so far that have

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Late man, and good morning, are actually late. Good evening
to you. Bernie.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Hey, let's start out with the injury tonight in the game.
Is that young man Okay, I understand he's been held
overnight for observation.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Last I heard he was moving all his extremities. They
were talking about that after the game was canceled, Scott,
Joe Lack and a few others and Bill Belichick who
had a little press conference after. So I haven't got
any updated news. Before I came on, I was trying

(11:51):
to check to see if there were any updates, but
he was moving all or most of his extremities in
the inmans all the way to the hospital, so obviously
thoughts and prayers to him and his family real quickly.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
I'm glad you mentioned that the game was halted. There
was ten twenty nine to go in the fourth quarter.
I'm guessing that game is going to be graded. Is
no action correct? Because fifty five minutes weren't played? Will
that game be greated as action or no action?

Speaker 4 (12:20):
No action? You were spot on that fifty five minutes
or more has to be played, so all tickets will
be graded no action. Well, BOYD did that?

Speaker 5 (12:31):
So all right?

Speaker 3 (12:31):
I want to dive into the meat here because I
talk about this every week on my show. The group
think Echo Chamber starts to run wild, and I'm if
I have a nickel for every time. You know, Bill
Belichick's thought to be on the hot seat. You know,
I'll have my own private playing with twenty four hour access.
What's reality there? I refuse to believe it, but I'm

(12:52):
not that connected there. What are your thoughts?

Speaker 4 (12:55):
I think it's a different kind of hot seat, Bernie.
What he has done for mister Craft and the organization
the six super Bowl's life now without Tom Brady. Last
year was an absolute fiasco with Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.
They bring you know, Girod Mayo is in grooming supposedly

(13:18):
to replace Bill at some point. Then they bring in
Bill O'Brien now to be the OC and help out
Mack who had a last year last year. Go back
to Don Shuler, Tom Landry. It's the quest for nineteen
nineteen more wins. You know, Bernie, A five and twelve

(13:40):
season will make it a real, real long arf season
for Bill and the Patriots, never mind their fans, but
you know they're under rover opened at seven and a half,
now six and a half some spots, I mean, everyone
speculating eight and nine, nine and eight, which I think
will get him at least to the next season.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
So let's talk about Bill O'Brien because, believe me, I
know Matt Patricia is an unmitigated disaster as he was
in Detroit. I'm a Mac Jones guy. I don't care
what anybody says. I've been doing this a long time.
Give him a weapon, give him a normal situation. He
checks a lot of boxes that a lot of people
refuse to recognize how is that meshing So far with

(14:23):
the new offense and Bill.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
O'Brien, All reports are that him and Bill are on
the same page. Practices have been good. He's showing blashes.
He's showing exactly what you and I both think. Here's
the problem, Bernie. Their offensive line is pretty bad this year,

(14:46):
and he's not one of those mobile quarterbacks. Kind of
reminds me almost like the Drew BLEDSOE can make all
the throws, but he's not going to screamble and run
for ten twelve yar to move the change like most
mobile quarterbacks. But I do see the improvement. He has

(15:07):
some decent weapons. I think he's an NFL quarterback. It's
just what happened last year, Bernie. He's taken a big
step back. So he's trying to get year two and
three all together in one year.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Here, Bertie, I'm an agreement. Look, he threw a seventy
yard diamond practice a couple of weeks ago. He knows
how to read a defense, he knows how to make
his progressions. But quarterback is a reliant position on a
lot of weapons around him. You got to give him
some help. There's not a dot in my mind, he
can play. Ironically, San franciscould have been better off if

(15:44):
it had drafted him, but they got through in Mac
Jones and Rock Party. But I'd digress. Let's get I'm
hearing good things about Emmett Smith are checked out. Oh
my goodness. Ezekiel Elliott catching it all out of the
backfield blocking, I'm hearing the Dotscarnekia is saying his veteran
presence is going to help our offensive line. He'll spell
Ramandri Stevenson. Thoughts on how it's working out for Ezekiel

(16:08):
Elliott so far.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
I think you nailed it right there, Bernie. Last year,
surprisingly Ramanda Stevenson caught sixty nine passes, and Pierre Strong
and a few other backs that they have time Montgomery
who's hurt, were not working out. They were looking for
that veteran presence. Now, what will Zeke's role be here

(16:33):
in New England. I think he's probably might be like
that goal line vulture. He's not coming in to be
James White. He's not coming in here to replace Ramandre
Bill absolutely loves this guy, and even Stevenson outside looking
in might be a little upset because he's moving towards

(16:54):
another contract. So if Zeke steals six or seven touchdow
and you know, maybe take fifteen to twenty passes off
at his plate, well he'll be a fresher running back.
But I think the compliments there and the big big
thing there, Bernie is the veteran leadership and the presence

(17:15):
a North and South can hit the hole, and I
think be the goal line back for Bill and the Patriots.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Yeah. I mean I heard somebody say they thought he
might get cut. I've not heard that, and I checked
with a couple of sources. He's in there. I were
you in agreement or tell me if I'm wrong? Yeah,
you get cut? Yeah? No, I completely By the way,
just so people know. In Mac Jones NFL debut, first
time he ever stepped foot in an NFL game, first
game ever, completes twenty nine thirty nine for two to

(17:44):
eighty one and a touchdown pass seventy four percent completion record,
a rookie first game record. Came back the next week
completed seventy three percent of his passes. So give him
something to work with and he'll be fine. He just
doesn't make the highlight reel. I think people get caught
up in the highlight reel. All right, let's talk about
the Patriots overall. It's I'm hearing also, they could have

(18:05):
a top ten defense this year. Jeff, what are your thoughts.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
Yeah, they're gonna be that to early two thousand defense.
That's what Bill's looking for. They're going to try to
win on defense, really try to play keep away control,
you know, the time of possession. And you know, I'm
not I don't see Ty Lawer out there, Willie McGinnis

(18:30):
and Bruce, but I think this defense is going to
be going to keep them in games. The problem that
they have had in the past is they have struggled
against the big time quarterbacks. And so now, excuse me,
they open up with Jalen Hurts. You know they played

(18:52):
face Josh Allen twice, Aaron Rodgers twice, and even two
or twice. Game one is gonna tell a lot, I think,
you know, I think they opened up three and a
half point underdogs. They might be five to five and
a half now, but I think they got a good
chance to actually upset and beat Philly opening Day. That'd
be the perfect time. Here's something for you, Bernie. They've

(19:14):
only in the look ahead games. They have only favored
currently right now, in four of the seventeen games this year.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
But you know, Jeff, just to jump in, it's been
greated out that the Patriots have the toughest schedule in
the National Football League this year.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
Yeah, I mean just the first month alone. They open
up at home against Philly, then they have Dolphins at home,
which they're small dogs there. Then they traveled to the Jets,
and then they traveled to Dallas. So right there in
the first month, I mean, with a good chance, and
that's maybe they're one in three.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
And it'll you know, there's an old saying in the
NFL It's not how you drive, it's how you arrive.
At the seventeen game season, I think the Patriots could
go nine and eight, ten and seven would be their ceiling.
I'm not predicting that, but I would never count out
and Bill Belichick ever, And so I guess I'm gonna
put a gun to your head, Jeff, if you're if

(20:15):
you were a betting man and you are, where do
they land this year, assuming there are no devastating injuries, Well.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
I'd like to say in our lanes, Bernie, I'm buying
the dip the line opened at seven and a half,
now six and a half in most shops. I'll go
I'll go over the six and a half, and I'm
right with you. I think this can be a nine
and eighteen and with a couple breaks here and there,
get off to a good start. Because we know history, Bill,

(20:45):
after the bye weekend, the second half, they usually get stronger.
I'll go on record right here on Fox Sports Radio.
I'll go ten and seven this year.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
Yo, Jeff. Weren't they seven and ten last year with
Matt Patricia in that goofy play against the Raiders across
him a game?

Speaker 6 (21:02):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (21:03):
Yes, So I mean people don't know the links to
the ridiculous you know, incompetence Matt Patricia is I know
for my Detroit Day. So if you got Matt Patrician,
you won seven games. I think their final question, do
you agree there better this year than last year? The
New England Patriots one? All right, Jeff, let's do this,

(21:24):
but let's get good, good stuff. I want to get
you on. Let's get a month into the season so
we get to lay of the land a little bit,
but let's get you back then.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Okay, thank you so much. Bernie, Having an amazing weekend
and look toward to it.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Thanks Pal. It's Jeff Dawson. If you couldn't tell the
Boston accent, he's not faking it. He's a Bostonian through
and through ECI in Boston. He's he's connected, and he's honest.
He was honest about the Celtics last year ended up
being right, So he's not a homer in any way.
I run to remind everybody tonight brought to you by Discover.
At the end of your first year, Discover credit cards

(21:58):
automatically double all the cash back you've earned. That's right,
everything you've earned double. Seriously see terms. Check it out
for yourself at discover dot com. Slash Match coming up.
I'm gonna take a dive the NFL Draft. Our first
round quarterbacks really worth the gamble. I've got receipts. But
first let's go to our guy who personally knows the

(22:21):
chef at South Park. It's Kevin Wyatt with the ladies.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Oh I wish Isaac Hayes sadlya left us a few
years ago, but yeah, chef is one of the best
characters on that show.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
We did a great job singing last night. Singing last
week to the top credit.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
You're the only person who's probably ever told me that
he did a great job singing. So I will take that.
I will take that and run with it.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
Hey, I know what I'm talking about, man.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Anyway, Major League Baseball, we did have three double headers today.
There were three games in Southern California schedule for Sunday
that were moved to Saturday because of Hurricane Hillary bearing
down on the southern California coast. The Dodgers and Marlins
LA sweepy that devileheader from Miami, winning at three to
one in both games. Mookie Betts with two home runs

(23:06):
in the nightcap. Arizona sweeping their doubleheader with the Padres
six to four and eight. Won the final scores in
those games. Tampa Bay splitting with the Los Angeles Angels.
It's the Rays winning the first game seven to six,
and then they or they lose the first game seven
to six and then win the second one eighteen to four.

(23:26):
The Seattle Mariners on a roll. They've won five in
a row, ten to three against the Astros. Julio Rodriguez
making major league history seventeen games in the seventeen hits
in his last four games seventeen for twenty two overaught
to play. Those seventeen hits the most in a four
game span in Major League history. The Braves also won
a winning streak of five game winning streak six to five.

(23:47):
They beat the Giants on an eight dating two run
home run by Eddie Rosario. The Baltimore Orioles. They beat
the Oakland Athletics seven to ten in a ten inning affair,
Milwaukee beating the Rangers six one as the Rangers struck
out in abysmal eighteen times in that game, the Blue
Jays holding on for a four to three win against
the Reds, the Red Sox sending the Yankees to a

(24:10):
seventh consecutive loss eight to one, as Gara Cole taking
the loss. The Patriots and Packers had a scary moment
up in Green Bay, as this game was called off
in the fourth quarter after Patriots quarterback Isaiah Bulden took
a hit from a teammate that left him immobilized and
required him to be carded off on a stretcher, the
Patriots saying Bolden had feeling in all of his extremities

(24:32):
but will remain hospitalized in the Green Bay area. Overnight
for observation some late scorers. In the NFL preseason, Seahawks
beat the Cowboys twenty two to fourteen, Raiders over the
Rams thirty four to seventeen. In Los Angeles, forty nine
Ers beat the Broncos twenty one to twenty. Chiefs beat
the Cardinals thirty eight to ten. In the World Game

(24:54):
of Football, Lionel Messi scored in the first half and
Inner Miami won the MLS's League's Cup on penalty kicks
at Nashville. And the Women's World Cup final coming up
this morning between Spain and England and kickoff set for
six am Eastern and on Fox. Back to you, Bernie.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
That's right as we are signing off, the World Cup
Final will be kicking off, all right. The NFL Draft.
You're watching your favorite team on TV Hope Springs Eternal,
and you have a decision to make. Do you take
a potential project quarterback who may be your hero someday

(25:35):
or an impact defensive player. What do you do? Well,
I guess you could make the statement that they are
all projects. Even took Peyton Manning a while to get going.
It took John Elway a while to get going. Aaron
Rodgers was you know six and Tennis first year. But
this last group they are very much projects in my view.

(25:55):
The usual suspects Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Bryce Young, CJ. Stroud,
and certainly Trey Lance, who I saved many tweets two
years ago that are making me look good now. And
I like Trey Lance. I don't root for anybody to
have a demise, but I have to call it as
I see it. But hold that thought. See, because there's
always a debate around draft time as to the belief

(26:16):
that you might just have the next great NFL quarterback
and he's staring you in the face, you know, like
Trey Lance, Malik Willis, Ryan Leaf. Go back and reread
the narratives. They've always been there. Many times. I've been
engaged in some friendly debates, taking part in a few
comments myself. What I decided to do, though, is test

(26:38):
my theory and dig a little deeper. And I dug
all the way back to nineteen sixty seven, and I
looked through one hundred and nine first round quarterback picks,
and it left me with one very simple conclusion. For
every John Elway or Dan Marine or Peyton Manning, there
are six guys who will never live up to the expectations.

(27:00):
For every Patrick Mahomes or even a Josh Allen, there's
a Zach Wilson or a Jameis Winston. Yeah, Jameis Winston.
Thirty picks three years ago, brutal. Six of the win
in the first quarter. Six were in the fourth quarter
when they were leading. Oh yeah, six were picked sixes. Yeah,
that's Jamis. Let me first explain what expectations are expectations

(27:21):
unquote see, because when a team uses their first round
pick in the draft that select the quarterback, make no mistake,
they are looking for the future of their franchise period. Now.
They don't expect that person to turn the team around
in three games, although it'd be nice. As I said,
Cam Newton had great success right out of the gate.

(27:42):
But the draft pick is expected to eventually become your
team leader, the face of the franchise, the man the
missing link that leads you to the Promised Land super Bowl.
So when you select the quarterback in the first round
of the draft, that young man, whether he likes it
or not, is going to face more scrutiny than any
other pick in any other sport. So when the team wins,

(28:04):
they're hoisted out to the shoulders. Their teammates love them
because it was typically their command and leadership that got
them there. But when they lose, they can be thrown
under the bus fairly quickly by fans, by media, by coaches,
you name it. So they'll receive one hundred percent of
the blame a lot of times for the problems with
the team. It just goes with the territory. It just

(28:25):
goes with the territory. Every can't miss quarterback prospect thinks
they can handle the pressure, but very few have really
proven to do so. Of those one hundred and nine
quarterbacks drafted in the first round this is nineteen sixty seven,
nine nine made it to the Hall of Fame, but
you all thought maybe they had a chance. Nine And

(28:48):
of the one hundred and nine quarterbacks drafted, well, twenty
six played on a team that went to a Super Bowl.
And of those players, they held a record of twenty
nine and sixteen in the Super Bowl going back to
nineteen sixty seven. That's the reason I did this study.
In sixty seven, that was Super Bowl one. Bart Starr

(29:09):
over the Oakland Raiders checked that over the knsas City Chiefs. Now,
this number, it's a little skewed because it also includes
players who've been on the bench, like Matt Leonard, he
was a first round pick. He was on the bench
when Arizona lost in the Super Bowl to Pittsburgh. Byron
Lefwich was on the bench when Pittsburgh won. So, in

(29:30):
terms of quarterbacks who started in the Super Bowl that
made the Hall of Fame, their Super Bowl winning record
eleven and nine. All right, now there's a couple out there.
This isn't done yet. Peyton Manning won a couple of
Super Bowls. It'll be in the Hall of Fame. And
so when you talk about the nine players who've compiled

(29:54):
that record in the Super Bowl, while others have not
fared so well, the distinctions that first round quarterbacks have
held are most never made it All Pro team as well,
And after analyzing first round quarterbacks that have been in
the Super Bowl with the team that drafted to them,
what happened to the other ninety eight or check that,

(30:17):
what happened to the other I think it's ninety one
who've never led their team to the big Game. Don't
get me wrong. A lot of them still had average careers,
maybe good careers, and the book is still out on
all the guys drafted in the last ten years, so
we've got to be fair. A lot of those guys
are still active in the NFL. But you can't help
but conclude that drafting the quarterback in the first round

(30:37):
is still a huge risk period. Granted, they may be
more polished coming out of college than guys later in
the draft, but they proud of the other teams more wins,
or had a high profile experience in college, or they
just seem projectable, or in this day and age, people
are just simply enamored about got track stars and you
try to convert them into quarterbacks. All right, Well, the

(31:00):
numbers are daunting. One hundred and nine quarterbacks and drafted
the first rounds in sixty seven. Nine made the Hall
of Fame. There are still five out there I've identified
that could make it to the Hall of Fame. Twenty
six made it to the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl
win loss record twenty nine and sixteen all pro twelve

(31:22):
till those numbers show some success by first round quarterbacks.
But like I said before, twenty five of the first
round players that have made it to the Super Bowl,
I sixty one fell short. Well. Their team called them
on the first round on the big day, believing they
would be the one to get them to the Promised Land.
So while many of them have gone on they have
good careers to say that taking a quarterback on the

(31:43):
first round is a necessary gamble, it's way less than
fifty to fifty on them living up to their expectations.
And that's just simply the truth. The numbers don't lie.
It's a gamble. It's a calculated gamble that it turns
out works out about twenty nine percent of the time.

(32:04):
That means those are players that had, you know, north
to five year careers, got to a Super Bowl, got
to the playoffs, one playoff games, maybe made the All
Pro seventy one percent of the time, if you draft
the quarterback in the first round, it's not going to
work out. So my suggestion for you first round choppers,
beware right the fit of your franchise, well, it might

(32:28):
not work out so well. If you drafted Jeff George
who had a cannon arm through the ball in ninety
six yards in the combine, or a Ryan Leaf, you
know what happened there. Or maybe you get lucky and
you draft a Peyton Manning or Troy aig Minora or
Patrick Mahomes. So the question in reality, our first round

(32:49):
quarterbacks really worth the gamble. The years I covered Detroit
to cover two of them, Joy Harrington Matt Stafford, neither
one ever won a playoff game. I don't know think
I pick on Stafford. I like Stafford. What I don't
like is that when people who were not in Detroit
seemed to think he never had any support ever, Oh
poor Matt. Not true. Now I get it. He was

(33:10):
there twelve years, and out of the eight years, his
teams weren't great, and Matt was not good enough to
elevate him either. But in twenty fourteen that Lion's team
was twelve and four, six all pros and DOMINICANSU Calvin Johnson,
the number four ranked defense, went into Dallas had the game.
I know Lion fans have complained about the pass interference call,

(33:32):
but that was well. There was a lot of football
left after that, and Matt Stafford turned the ball over
twice in the fourth quarter. This time Jekwaski Tart didn't
drop the interception or they won. Of what a playoff game,
and he stuck it up against Seattle in New Orleans.
So when he had his chance, he was owen to
seven in playoff games oh and four in playoff checked that,

(33:52):
owen three in playoff games, owen seven in playoff game implications.
He had one game at Green Bay against their JV team.
All they had to do was beat green Bay week seventeen,
and they would have hosted a playoff game in January
twenty fifteen instead of having to go on the road.
Stafford could do that. Now, I'm not picking on Stanford.
He's a Super Bowl champ. Fine, they won with him,
not because of him, but he did win a Super Bowl.

(34:14):
Didn't win a single game. The playoff game in Detroit,
and he was a number one pick overall. He passed
for gazillion yards, and he played hurt and the town
loved him because he showed up and played his butt off.
He just he did everything but win. Joey Harrington, different story.
Those are my two experiences with the first round pick
of quarterback in Detroit. Talk amongst yourselves, Well, we're about

(34:34):
eighteen days away from the real games, the real bullets
flying in the NFL. Some interesting scheduling quirks and some annotations.
I don't know what the Panthers, Broncos, Giants, and Titans
did to piss off the NFL, but I'll share with
you their fate and their schedule, and it's going to
be a little challenging. I'm Bernie Frida who come to

(34:55):
you live the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirack dot
Com studios. Keep it locked listening to the Bernie Fradle
Show on Fox Sports Radio or back at the Bernie
Frader Show Fox Sports Radio. Come to you live from
the tire Ac dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Coming at the top of the hour, real news in
the NBA story with a lot of layers. We'll have

(35:16):
Mark Medina. Medina Magic had been like like we do
every Saturday heading into Sunday Pacific time. Whatever the Carolina Panthers,
Denver Broncos, New York Giants, or Tennessee Titans did to
tick off the NFL, I don't know, but it's led
those four teams number one to not have a single

(35:39):
scheduled primetime game. Not that it can't be flexed later,
but for now, not a single schedule primetime game held.
The Giants were a playoff team and They're in a
fairly large metropolitan area last time I check, so their
absence from the national picture is a little head scratching.
But one of the other things those four teams have
to endure are three straight road games. You don't wish

(36:02):
he had on anybody, because it's been proven now going
back gosh what thirty years, NFL teams that have to
play their third of three straight road games are seventy
two and eighty two against the spread. That's forty five percent,

(36:23):
and that includes actually twenty three and forty four straight
up and twenty one and forty five against the spread
if they won game two. So do your homework if
you happen to see a team that's in their third
straight road game. There's only four teams that have it
this year Panthers, Broncos, Giants and Tits, and they won
the second of the third. Well, history shows that third

(36:45):
one is real rough sledding. However, some other interesting news.
You're starting to see the commercials for it now in
the NFL network. Germany loves the NFL, England loves the NFL,
and the German fans over a chance to watch the NFL.
Last year with Tom Brady and when tickets went on

(37:06):
sale for the Dolphins Casey Chiefs game November fifth, and
Frankfurt sold out in ten minutes, unreal. Vivid Seats told
front Off of Sports that the site traffic was up
eight hundred percent and the average ticket price eight hundred
and fifty four dollars for that game. That's the second
highest single ticket price for opening week right now for
any second highest ticket price for any game if they

(37:30):
were opening week, even though the game's not till November fifth,
but you know it's the only game in Germany. Meanwhile,
the Pats Indianapolis Colts they'll play a second game at
Frankfurt Stadium at where Bundesliga plays on November twelfth, that
sold out immediately as well. Now look, I think it's
great that the NFL has become an international sport. And

(37:51):
after Tom Brady and his forty five year old body
and the Tampa Bay Bucks beat the Seahawks and Munich
last year, fans hung around for a couple hours they
were singing take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver.
How random is that? And I think this really took
off because we know that football in Europe has been

(38:15):
popular for a long time. But something happened after the
pandemic pandemic and when the NFL got back in full force,
and now they've got you know, five international games this season,
two in Germany, three in England. By the way, the
Jacksonville Jags will play in two of the three London
games this fall. I think that's a first where a
team will play two games in London in the same season. Look,

(38:38):
some people think there'll be an International Division someday. I say, no, way, no, how,
that's complete Bologna. You can't force a team to live there.
But I think we get to a point where we
have a game every week in England and everybody has
to play there once, and you make it equitable. So
you get the National Football League every week with having
some poor team forced to live there and eat fish
and chips every meal and bangers and mash. All right,

(38:58):
coming up, Mark Mendina Medina Magic, big story in the NBA.
You don't want to miss it. You're listening to the
Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (39:08):

Speaker 3 (39:40):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. Bernie Frattle Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle or
comedy Lyon from the tyrac dot com studios Fox Sports
Radio here in Las Vegas. Tyrac dot com. We'll help
you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free
road hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers tyrack
dot com the way tired buying should be. Well, we've

(40:03):
got real news in the NBA this week, a story
that actually has a lot of layers that go well
beyond just name calling, including is it possible one individual
violated Article thirteen, Section two of the league's CBA. So
you know what that means. It's that time every Saturday

(40:26):
night on The Bernie Frattle Show midnight Pacific. It is
Medina Magic. Because the NBA has found a way to
being the news literally fifty two weeks out of the year.
And oh, by the way, I would have started with
the schedule mark. But this is much more salacious. So
I want to dive in to the James Harden debacle here.

(40:49):
And one of the things that caught my eye because
I did my homework, is it possible that Darryl moy
violated that section of the collective Bargaining Agreement based on
implied or express statements he made, leaving James Harden believing
something that might be coming that wasn't there.

Speaker 5 (41:09):
Well, look, it's very well possible. That's the reason why
the NBA has launched an investigation to see if that
is the case. But I think what we have to remember, Bernie,
is the NBA did an initial investigation last season when
red flags were thrown up about was there any sort
of implied wink wink handshake agreement that James Harden would

(41:30):
get rewarded after taking such a steep discount and then
they used those savings to make some key off season acquisitions. Initially,
they didn't find anything. Now that doesn't mean that they're
not guilty of anything, but it could mean that there's
no paper trail and for what it's worth the Sixers
have an adamant that they've never promised James Harden anything,

(41:54):
and while clearly James Harden was left with a different impression,
the Sixers to has been abundantly clear that they never
made direct interorrect imply promises. Not only that he would
get rewarded with a hefty contract ame back to last summer,
but even when you fast forward to this past offseason,
this idea that James Harden would be had this expectation

(42:18):
that he would be traded to the Clippers if he
exercised his player option. When that happened, it was relay
to me from within the Sixers organization that they'll certainly
explore trades, but they're ultimately going to do what's best
for them, Ie, They're only going to do a trade
to the Clippers if they get something fair in return.
And so there's certainly a lot to unpacked. But I think,

(42:40):
like with everything in the court of law, it's what
you can prove, not what.

Speaker 3 (42:44):
You think tactly. Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday midnight
Bernie Fattles show. You alluded to it. Harden had a
forty seven million dollars player option. He declined signed for
twelve million dollars less. How mad is he about that?

Speaker 5 (43:00):
I think he's incredibly man Now what I think is
interesting about that specific part, though, is that he was
asked about taking that pay cut. He never said that
we had any sort of wink wink agreement at the time.
When he gave an interview I believed to Chris Sans
earlier in the season, he said that he made that
pay cut with the idea that it was presented to him.

(43:22):
If he were to take that cut, it would give
them a better opportunity to build a championship roster around him,
and at this point of his career, that's what he
is about. Now. He may have left things out on
purpose because he thought that he would get rewarded, but again,
it's what you can prove, not what you think. And
the Sixers have been adamant that they never promised anything

(43:45):
like that. But that's why the NBA is investigating, because
if there is a paper trail, it doesn't matter what
he said. He said, right, it matters what's documented. And
the Sixers have already gotten in trouble before with tampering. Now, look,
what's the NBA going to do? They docked him a
second round pick. Who cares. So I don't know how

(44:07):
severe the penalty will actually be if the NBA actually
does find something, but you know they are looking into
it for what it's worth.

Speaker 3 (44:16):
So the hit parade keeps coming for Philadelphia. Above and
beyond the fact that James Harden has said his relationship
with the Sixers is irreparable, that is it true? For it?
Is it also true? Four days ago Joel Embiid removed
his social media account. You know, with all things seventy
six ers, where does that stand? You read the tea

(44:37):
leaves there.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
Well, look in the social media area. You always have
to look at that as tea les Now, does that
mean that he automatically wants out or his time with
the Sixers is over? Not necessarily. I've been told that
from the organization standpoint, they're still of the mind that
not only are they making a trade to James Harden
only if it keeps them in can But it's about

(45:02):
trying to maximize and have the best rush around Joel
Embiid because both organizational widse Angel Embiid, they feel the
pressure that they finally have to, you know, win a
title or at least get closer to that than they
have in recent seasons. But look, as you know, Pernie,
the NBA changes very quickly, so all it takes is

(45:24):
James Harden to show up out of shape, them gain
off to a poor start and everything unraveling from there.
But I think Joel Embiid's mind right now is he's
certainly not real with the circumstances. I mean, remember, this
was the same nonsense that he dealt with with Ben
Simmons wanting out, and I remember at the time talking
to him last season, he said, you know what, I

(45:46):
have to ignore all that stuff and just focus on
me being the best version of myself. And that's what
his focus is right now, knowing that he had an
MVP season last year, but he also didn't have the
greatest playoff performances. Right at some point, if it continues
down this road, I don't think that he's going to
have this attitude of out well control. You can control

(46:08):
and ignore the nonsense, because eventually the nonsense is going
to affect them.

Speaker 3 (46:12):
I don't think there's any trademarkt for him. It would
seem to me that if he wants to get paid
next summer, show up in shape have the best year
you've ever had with the Sixers, and maybe you've got
a chance to turn some heads. What are the chances
that happens.

Speaker 5 (46:27):
Well, look, James Harden doesn't have a history of doing that,
but you hit it on the mark. If he really
wants to rectify this, he has thirty four million dollars
left on his contract where he can show that he's
worth that amount, if not more, once he becomes a
free agent next summer. Now, look, with all that said,
I can understand James Harden's frustration that if he was

(46:48):
told from Darryl Morey or anyone the Sixers organization that
he would be taken care of, and all of a sudden,
they're back in a way. Look, when you're dealing with
business talks and you're threatening your payle regardless of how
well he has other revenue streams, he has every right
to be upset. But what he's also missing out on

(47:09):
is a few things here. He can still control his
market value with how well or poorly he plays. And
they did not get to the NBA finals, let alone
win a championship because he was mostly a no show
in the playoffs. Number two, It's not like he's trying
to flee the Houston Rockets where everyone's gone that are

(47:29):
going into rebuild mode. He is playing with the last
season's MVP, so as a result of that, he still
has a chance to win a championship. But clearly his
priorities has always been about getting his money and getting
his numbers, and the championships come probably a distant third
from that. So it's not surprising, but it's disappointing.

Speaker 3 (47:53):
Time with Mark Mandinaz So Mark. The schedule came out
this week with caught my eye spanning the globe as
they say, the MAVs and Timberwolves are going to play
an exhibition game in Abu Dhabi, There'll be games in
Manchial the Pistons, and then a regular season game Hawks
and Magic in Mexico City, and Brooklyn and Cleveland in Paris.

(48:14):
What's the thinking here? Is this designed to create a
more international audience and hopes to an even better TV agreement.

Speaker 5 (48:21):
Yeah, I think that's the really part of it. I
think it's basically in line with the NBA strategy of
the last two decades or so that they've had preseason
games overseas. They know that they have a global audience.
They know that. You know, when you look at the
past few MVPs, they've all been international players. You look
at the Hall of Fame class with Pau Gasol and

(48:42):
Dirk Novitsky and Tony Parker, they're all international players. But
I think that there's also, specifically with Mexico City, another
component to it that that could be a that could
be an old future city that has an actual NBA team.
Now when that will happen, we have to pump the
brakes a little bit because expansion is not necessarily a

(49:05):
priority yet form Adam Silver, it's about negotiating that new
media rights deal. And when I was in Vegas, you know,
in your backyard during Summer League, I was told that
once they do expansion, it's going to be about getting
Seattle another franchise and Las Vegas another franchise. But Mexico
City will definitely have an NBA team. It's not a

(49:28):
matter of if. It's a matter of whend.

Speaker 3 (49:31):
Mark I annotated the highlights that stuck out for me
with the upcoming schedule, anything stick on for you, well.

Speaker 5 (49:39):
I think it's basically part for the course. When it
comes to opening week, we're going to have the marquee matchups.
Same thing with Christmas Day. But I think with this
end season tournament, that's the inevitable thing that jumped out
to me because it's new and while you know we've
had this conversation in past weeks, is this a good
idea or not? I think, even though I have my
own questions about it, I think it's still in that

(50:01):
positive because it's going to at least attract more interest
in the NBA outside of the playoffs. But when you're
looking at who are the opponents in group play, I
think it's very telling that they made it a point
for those group play matchups to include basically mark Key
games that would have been marke Key games in normal

(50:21):
regular season mode. And also the timing of it. It's
the first week in November of group play, so this
is shortly after you know, Opening Week Sizzle and all that.
But another component of it is that this eliminates any
load management or any injuries to any of the star
players that prevent them from appearing in these games. So

(50:42):
when you're looking at Clippers Nuggets, I suspect, even though
we're talking Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, that they'll actually
suit up. Same thing with Lakers sons. You know, Lebron
James and Kevin Durant haven't faced off each other since
twenty eighteen because of overlapping injuries. But I think that's
going to end with that in season tournament game as

(51:03):
well as their normal regular season game, I think the
second game of the season. So I think that that
is certainly by design.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
Last thing for me, I thought the NBA did something
a little sneaky but very clever. They want to make
sure they ensure that Kevin Durant finally has to play
in front of Warriors fans for the first time since
leaving for Brooklyn. So Phoenix will play Golden State opening week.
I hope nothing screws that up.

Speaker 5 (51:32):
Your thoughts, Yeah, well, look, that's in line with what
I was saying with the in season tournament that if
you have literally the season opener, that reduces any chance
that he's not going to be available because of injuries.
But I think in fairness to all this, it is
also in line with what the Warriors have wanted to do.
They've wanted to have a full video tribute in front

(51:53):
of a sellout crowd of fans to show their appreciation
for Kevin Durant's role in the Warriors two champion in
three finals appearances and because of his overlapping injuries and
the COVID delayed restrictions with not having fans the full capacity,
they haven't had been able to have that kind of
presentation that the Warriors have wanted. So no doubt the

(52:14):
NBA wants it. They want the big matchups, they want
the drama and the storylines. But I think also the
Warriors wanted it so they can finally have this unveiling
for Kevin Durant.

Speaker 3 (52:25):
All right, great stuff. As always, Mark, We'll see you
next week seeing bad Time, seeing bad channel. You never
know what the daily news cycle brings for the NBA.
Hopefully Darryl Moury and j won't strangle each other.

Speaker 5 (52:38):
Right, Well, how about this, Bernie. Unlike what James Harden
is charging about Darryl Moury, none of us are liars.
We always tell the truth.

Speaker 3 (52:48):
We just don't go to China and do it on
a stage where he could take advantage of what Darryl
Moury said in twenty nineteen about Hong Kong. Other than that,
how was your day?

Speaker 5 (52:59):
I will say tell you this It was definitely calculated
when and when Oh.

Speaker 3 (53:04):
My goodness, James comments very much so. All right, great
stuff is always Mark, have we've good a week ahead?
All right? That is Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday
night right here Fox Sports Radio. Yep, midnight. I didn't
see this coming to this degree, and we don't know
what's coming for next week, but there'll be something. That's
just how the NBA rolls. Right now. Coming up, we

(53:28):
continue our NFL preview. We take you to the AFC
the AFC East odds win totals team previews for the
twenty twenty three season, as The Bernie Fraddles Show rolls on.
I am Bernie Frattle. We are coming to you live
from the Fox Sports Radio tarrac dot Com studios. Don't
go away, you're listening to the Bernie Fraddles Show on
Fox Sports Radio. All right, back on the Bernie Fraddle Show,

(53:50):
Fox Sports Radio, come to you live fro the tyrat
dot Com studios here in Las Ags. I'm gonna call
him Audible. We're gonna push the AFC East preview till
later in the show because I want to respond to
some tweets, not directly having to do with not really
accepting my first round quarterback draft philosophy, and I'm going

(54:12):
to bring some receipts and then of course bottom of
the after Kevin's update, we got Uncle Vj's corner with
hopefully another motivational, inspirational story like the one he had
a few weeks back about the first HBCU hockey team.
Remember Rich Gannon. He was drafted in the fourth round,
had an eighteen year career, won an he won the

(54:34):
MVP once AFC Player of the Year three times, made
four Pro Bowls, and led the Raiders to the Super
Bowl in twenty oh two. I had Super Bowl thirty six,
I believe, And yeah, he didn't play well, but he
got to a Super Bowl. Did Matt Stafford do that
with his original team? No, No, I don't think so.
Brad Johnson, how about Brad Johnson now back in the day? Now,

(54:58):
Brad Johnson was drafted in nineteen nine. I bet you
didn't know, though around the draft went a lot longer
back then. Brad Johnson was drafted any ninth round and
he took a while to get going. But a few
years later he threw for over four thousand yards as
part of a Pro Bowl season with the Redskins, and
then when he signed with the Tampa Bay Bucks in
one he had phenomenal success. He won a Super Bowl,

(55:21):
earned another Pro Bowl, and not only did Brad Johnson
manage to break several passing records in Tampa Bay, he
actually won a Super Bowl. Brad Johnson was drafted in
the ninth round. Matt Hasselbeck. You see him on TV, well,
he used to. He was drafted in the sixth round
back in nineteen ninety eight. Ten seasons with the Seahawks,
eleven playoff appearances, three Pro Bowl selections, set several team records.

(55:45):
Hassel Beck was on the team in Super Bowl forty
in Detroit, but I covered yesterday lost. But his most
infamous moment came, of course, during the two thousand and
five wild Card game against Green Bay. After winning the
coin toss, Hassebeck said, quote, we want the ball and
we're going to score. Unfortunately Al Harris picked him off

(56:06):
and went fifty two yards for a score. But look,
his legacy is secure, Matt Hasselbeck, and he was drafted
in the sixth round. Mark Rippon a very good quarterback
out of Washington State, underrated, drafted in the sixth round
his first year as a starter. Two years later he
threw for four thousand yards, made it to a Pro

(56:29):
Bowl in nineteen ninety one. He led that great Redskin team.
They beat Buffalo in the Super Bowl thirty seven to
twenty four. And guess what, Mark Rippon, a sixth round
draft pick in the NFL, was a Super Bowl MVP.
Let's go back into the cookie jar. He may I
heard of a guy named Joe Thiesman who changed his

(56:50):
name to Joe thiseman to rhyme with the Heisman out
of Notre Dame. Drafted in the fourth round, he was
a punt returner. He started slow. Yeah, he started in
the CFL, but then the Washington Redskins bought his rights.
A few years later. He was a punt returner, then
started a quarterback. But guess what. Thaisman in eleven seasons

(57:13):
not only led the Redskins to a Super Bowl victory,
he led them to back to back Super Bowls and
had a great Super Bowl of course in nineteen eighty
three when they beat the Miami Dolphins. How about Bart Starr. Okay,
now we're really going back on the cookie jar. He
was drafted in the seventeenth round shesh when Eisenhower was president. Now,

(57:37):
when you think of the Vince Lombardierra, you think of
the Green Bay Packers, you think of the Super Bowl,
you think of Bart Starr. He's widely considered one of
the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Star led the Packs
the pack to two Super Bowl victories and five NFL
championships before they didn't have the Super Bowl. Then he
beat the Chiefs in six sixty seven Super Bowl. Well

(58:00):
one at the Colisseume beat the Raiders thirty three to fourteen.
By the way, Star was the Super Bowl MVP twice
and selected to for Pro Bowls. Fifteen years in the league.
Not bad for a seventeenth round draft pick. Roger Staubach
you know the story there. He was drafted in the
tenth round. Okay, now, very few players in the NFL.

(58:21):
I have to do military service before going into the NFL.
But he even volunteered for one tour of duty and
nom for his required service time. So when he showed
up as a rookie, he was twenty seven. But what
did Stalbach do? He led America's team you get to
call him that, to two super Bowl titles, six Pro

(58:42):
Bowl selections, and he was the MVP Super Bowl six
and oh, by the way, he was a Heisman Trophy winner.
Roger Staubach was drafted in the tenth round. And of
course this man needs no introduction. I had the pleasure
of covering him at Michigan. I'll never forget the day
he walked into Lloyd Carr's office as a sophomore and said, Coach,
why am I not starting quarterback? I'm better than the
other guy. And Lloyd said, Tom, worry about yourself. He did,

(59:05):
and he has. And obviously you know what Tom Brady
has done. Whether you call him the goat or not,
whether you hate on him or not, I'm not mentioning
any names. Sixth round, pick one hundred and ninety ninth overall,
the biggest steel in NFL draft history. Overcame a ton
of obstacles. He struggled to get playing Tom of Michigan.
But when he did, believe me, I was there. He

(59:27):
was men among boys. He comes into relief for Drew Bledsoe.
The rest is history. He wins three super Bowl titles,
two Super Bowl MVPs, two MVPs his first five years. Okay,
thirty one general managers are wondering did we make a
mistake here? Now, he wasn't drafted in the first round.

(59:47):
None of these guys were. And I've given you the
names of the usual suspects, So you tell me if
Trey Lance or CJ. Stroud, or Bryce Young or Will
Levis or any of the usual suspects I just mentioned
are going to come near any of the accomplishments of
those eight men I just gave. None of them drafted
before the fourth round, one as late as a seventeenth round.

(01:00:11):
The National Football League is a weird beast, a mercurial beast.
What you did before you got there doesn't mean a
whole hell of a lot. And drafting a quarterback in
the first round, I contend, is as risky as it
gets in any sport, because everything you do is juxtapos
against expectations coming up Uncle Vj's corner. But first, let's

(01:00:36):
go back to our guy, a man of many talents,
Kevin Wirt, with the latest.

Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
Well, we had three double headers in Major League Baseball
on Saturday. That's because three games from Sunday were moved
to Saturday due to a Hurricane Hillary about to hit
southern California. The Daughters and Marlins played two, and La
took both of them, winning him each three to one,
as Nookie Betts had two home runs in the second game.
Arizona swept their doubleheader against the Padres, winning those games

(01:01:04):
six to four and eight one, respectively, and the Rays
and Angels splitting their doubleheader. It was the Halo's winning
the first game seven to six, Tampa Bay demolishing the
Angels eighteen to four in the nightcap. The Mariners have
now won five straight games, beating the Houston Astros ten
to three. Julio Rodriguez having a stretch for the Ages

(01:01:25):
in the last four games, He's seventeen for twenty two
at the plate. That's a new Major League record for
the most hits across a four game span. The Atlanta
Braves another team playing hot. They beat the Giants six
to five for their fifth straight win. They got their
win on an eighth inning two run home run by
Eddie Rozario. The Orioles needed ten innings to beat the

(01:01:45):
Athletic seven to two. Milwaukee dominating the Rangers six to one,
as the Rangers striking out a dreadful eighteen times, the
Blue Jays holding on for a four to three win
against the Reds. The Red Sox beat their heated rival,
the Yankees eight to one, sending New York to a
seventh consecutive loss as Garah Cole took the loss for
the Yankees. Scary moment in the NFL preseason, the Patriots

(01:02:07):
and Packers had their preseason game called off in the
fourth quarter after Isaiah Bolden took a hit from a
teammate that left him immobilizeder required him to be carted
off on a stretcher. The Patriots did say that Bolden
had feeling in all of his extremities. However, he will
remain hospitalizing Green Bay overnight for observation. Some scores from

(01:02:28):
around the preseason late on the West Coast, Seahawks over
the Cowboys twenty two to fourteen, Rams, Rams fall to
the Raiders thirty four to seventeen, forty nine Ers over
the Broncos twenty one to twenty, and the Chiefs beat
the Cardinals thirty eight to ten. In the Global Game
of football, Lyla Messi with a first half goal. Inter
Miami wins the MLS League's Cup on penalty kicks against Nashville,

(01:02:49):
and the Women's World Cup Final coming up this morning
between Spain and England. Kickoff set for six am Eastern
on Fox. Back to you Burney, all right, UH.

Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
Texted to Vj's number. Let's get him. VJ, as you know,
hosts UH Saturday Nights with Martin Weiss. VJ Husky does
a great job. And VJ is a guy that has
a real passion for radio and a pension for storytelling
and and like me, appreciates UH the story behind the story.
In sports, we created Uncle Vj's corner who comes on periodically,

(01:03:27):
and one when he was here last a few weeks ago,
he shared with us the story of how the you
know a new HBCU for the first time, a hockey
team was created for the HBCU. Speak speaking of stories,
Let'll tell you what I want to I want to
get to one. Are we efforting?

Speaker 8 (01:03:45):
VJ?

Speaker 3 (01:03:45):
Can someone give me an update? What's going on? I've
texted the number and giving you guys the number. We
should have him. He's texted me he said he's ready.
So okay, is he not answering or what are we?
What are we doing? All right? Let me okay, So
here's the bottom line. Stories. You can find a good
story in just about any sports event. And I know

(01:04:08):
that people pooh pooh the preseason, and I understand maybe
it's not for everybody, But ten years i covered the Lions,
I really enjoyed the preseason, and having talked to a
lot of position coaches and coordinators and opposing teams and
the Lions organization in general, I don't think the preseason's
ever going away. There's a financial component to it, and

(01:04:29):
there are multiple reasons I'll share with you. But position coaches,
what they like to do is certainly evaluate position battles
so they can decide who's starting, who's not starting, et cetera,
et cetera. They like to evaluate high round draft choices
and their progress from year one to year two, et cetera.

(01:04:49):
And of course you put guys in a live game situation.
Is there risk? Yeah, but there are many as many
injuries and practice and non contact as there are in games.
But games stood out week one because you know Stetson
Bennett is getting on the field and when you consider
his story, he's twenty seven years old for crant out loud,
but at the same age as Sam Darnold twenty six.
Maybe he got sacked Week one in a game against

(01:05:14):
the Chargers. But there's a story, there's a backstreet. By
the way, Bennett in his pro debut in the preseason
seventeen to twenty nine fo one hundred and ninety one
yards and a touchdown, did not go win a interception,
even though his team, the Rams, lost by seventeen to
the Chargers. He was also sacked three times, and they
weren't necessarily his fault. However, one of the sacks for

(01:05:35):
me very noteworthy, sacked by a gentleman by the name
of cj Okoya. Now cg Okoya is no relationship to
the legendary Nigerian nightmare Christian Okoya back in the day
with the Chiefs. But cg Okoya is also from Nigeria.

(01:05:56):
He just started learning to play football two years ago.
He's twenty one years old. He signed with the Chargers
in the offseason, found his way to Los Angeles. He
was part of a development group called the International Player Pathway.
I believe former New York Giant Osi Umenyora has a

(01:06:17):
prominent role in that organization. And so this is a
kid six six, three hundred and fifteen pounds, clearly athletic.
Cig Okoya had never once played in a single organized game,
not Pop Warner, not high school, not club, certainly not college,
and absolutely not in the NFL until last Saturday. In

(01:06:40):
other words, Cigo Koya, who just learned to play the
game two years ago and just moved to this country,
had zero in game experience on any level. For this
young man to be on the field for any reason
was incredibly impressive, But what happened when he got on
the field was even more so. He sacked. He sacked
Stead had Bennett in the fourth quarter. He records a

(01:07:02):
sack on his first ever NFL game, Well as could
be expected. The Chargers sideline when absolutely bonkers during the celebration,
and head coach Brandon Staley said he was probably I
don't know if he makes it. I don't know what happens.
I don't know. I do know this, when you have
a story like that, it deserves to be recognized, It
deserves to be congratulated. We'll see you will continue to

(01:07:22):
try to effort. Vja Husky here as the Bernie Frattle
Show rolls on, I am Bernie Fraddle, who comes to
your line from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirack dot
Com Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie

am Pacific, six am Eastern. It's time. It's welcome in

Martin Weiss four pm Pacific until seven pm Pacific. You
do a great job chop it up. A good storyteller

(01:08:34):
and a real passion for the game. Say hello to VJ. Husky,
Thanks for staying up late, buddy.

Speaker 6 (01:08:40):
That's all good, Bernie, Thanks for having me as always, man,
you know I'll stay up around the clock to get
on the Berney Fridle Show. You already know that, but.

Speaker 3 (01:08:46):
Well, and you know I told the folks earlier. You know,
when you were on last time, you told a great
story about the first ever HBCU hockey team. And these
are the kind of under the radar stories that I
think people deserve to hear. So looking forward to what
you've got for us tonight well as always.

Speaker 6 (01:09:06):
Man, I'm over here Uncle Vj's corner man chilling off
Vanilla Drive and hands for Boulevard, And I got a
story about a guy that you guys already know a
lot about. But by the time I finished with this,
you're gonna understand why this man is in the position
and life that he is. Man, I want to talk
about a gentleman by the name of Magic Irvin Johnson.
Now we all know who Magic Johnson is. Nineteen eleven
seven and two of his career numbers five Tom Champion,

(01:09:28):
He's won a gold medal. Don't forget about the natty
he called the Little Brother against Larry Burden. If you
don't know who Little Brother is, google Mike Hart. That'll
bring it up for you. Tom's still Sam four. Thomas
says Tam. He won an MVP three times and he's
ad three time Finals MVP and a ten time All
NBA player. But listen, we already know about that. What

(01:09:49):
is Magic known for now? Magic is known for Magic
Johnson Enterprises. They buying up everything all over the place.
You guys remember the Magic Johnson's theaters and four different cities.
Did you know he all so at one point on
thirty one Burger Keys in the southeast. He not even
from the Southeast. He's from Michigan, Lanson and lived out
here in LA all his life and was still label
to pause thirty one Burger Keeans in the southeast. He

(01:10:12):
had one point had thirteen twenty four hour Fitness sports Club,
which I worked at one of before. And also down
in Inglewood there was the Magic Johnson TGI Fridays. You
got to be a bad man if you can take
the Fridays and just make it your own, but still
call it Fridays. But we know that's Magic Johnson Fridays.
His ownership also jumps over to Starbucks, which is the
big one we know about. He owned about one hundred

(01:10:33):
and five of them at one point, and that's what
exploded Magic Johnson. Then Magic got into sports. You guys
remember he used to be a four percent interest owner
with the Lakers. He then sold it for twenty seven
millions to a gentleman by the name of Patrick Soon.
Cy Young bought it for him and he got twenty
seven millions out of that. Recently, we know about the
football team. I'll get back to that in a minute,

(01:10:54):
but do you know that Magic Johnson has also his
twenty fourteen part owner of the Los Angeles FC, which
passed a billion dollars worth of first MLF team to
do so. Twenty fourteen, he bought into another LA team,
the Spark And then we all know the work he's
been doing with the Dodgers for the last eleven years.
Magic Johnson also owns an East Sports team. And if

(01:11:17):
you don't know what esports is, go's these guys that
play video games that we make fun of it and
say you live in your mom's basement and you pick
your boogers and all of that. But yeah, them playing
in video games, they getting the tournaments that's not going
to be the Olympics. They win in gold medals and
making millions of dollars. He owned one of those teams
since twenty and sixteen based in the Netherlands with two
other NBA owners from Golden State and the Washington Wizards.

(01:11:38):
And then, of course the most recent highest pro team
cell of all times twenty one members headed up by
Josh Harris. If you don't know him, look up the
Sixers in the New Jersey Devils, the Washington Commanders that
he was quoted in the interview saying, this is the
biggest thing I've ever done in my life. I mean that,

(01:11:59):
that's says it right there, with all the stuff he's done.
I said all of that to bring you back to
probably the first business dude that you guys don't know about,
and why Magic is where he is today. By the way,
just celebrated his sixty fourth birthday on the fourteenth of
this month. So Magic is still looking good, smell of
good and kicking Back. In nineteen ninety eight, Magic purchased

(01:12:20):
a Sweden basketball team by the name of M seven Bodots,
which then they changed to Magic M seven. Back in
nineteen ninety eight, from October to January, he only played
five games. Talk about load management. He can't say nothing
about load management no more. When I found that sat
right there. But in his debut fourteen points and eleven rebounds,

(01:12:42):
and at one point three games later, Magic Johnson had
a thirty point game in that league. Nobody knew what
was going on. Nobody knew Magic was over there playing.
He did it for the love of the game and
because he started business back in nineteen ninety eight. The
way he did, that's why we see the Magic Johnson
that we see today, which is only one of four

(01:13:03):
partial owners African American in the National Football League. Mister
Magic Johnson, Sir, I salute you, and you are, sir,
the Vanilla Brother vj's corner Brother of the week. Happy
belated birthday, Magic.

Speaker 3 (01:13:17):
Well, stand on the line. We're gonna chop it up
for a minute because this is very near and dear
to my heart. For a couple of reasons. I know
Magic did one other thing that probably doesn't get enough
credit for. And I think you give a wink and
a nod to Bird too. They saved the NBA in
nineteen seventy nine. The NBA was a punchline. Kareem Abdul
Jabbar was a punchline in the Airplane movie. I was

(01:13:37):
an intern at the form. I was there in the
middle of all of it. Six foot nine Magic Johnson
walked by me into October seventy nine. I said, oh
my god, are you kidding me? They beat that debut
you talk about. VJA was against the San Diego Clippers.
They scoring the last second buck and he runs into
Kareem Abdul Jabbar's arms. The enthusiasm was infectious. That lid
a fuse for the entire season, and Gediman says, I

(01:14:00):
don't think I could take eighty one more of these,
but the rest is history. Nine months later, he jumped
center scores forty two points beats the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
So would you agree VJ. Magic also saved the NBA.

Speaker 6 (01:14:14):
Absolutely, he definitely him and him and Berd definitely saved
the NBA. Jordan took it to where it is today.
With the NBA we have today. As far as the money,
the notoriety, the just globally what the NBA is, we
owe it to Magic, Larry Bird, and Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
And that's the list.

Speaker 3 (01:14:35):
And Magic's gone on to do numerous other things that
have benefited. He's been an exquisite businessman, as you pointed out.
And I don't think any of us will ever forget
the press conference on November sixteenth, nineteen ninety one, but
thirty two years later, he's He's a live and kick
and final thoughts on Magic Johnson.

Speaker 6 (01:14:55):
VJ top five player of all time definitely could be
the number one gentleman and human being in the history
of not just the NBA, but of sports. He's the
reason why I had a pair of purple, gold and
white conference high tops that I begged my mother for,
and I just always wanted to pass and look away

(01:15:16):
and make a wide, wide mouth open look while I'm
looking the other way while I wanted to pass. He's
just he's lak everything. Everybody knows how I still about Kobe.
That's not gonna change. But I have Magic and Kobe
right there. When somebody goes, who's the greatest legger, I
say Magic, Briyan.

Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
Yeah, you know, I can't disagree with anything you said.
I saw the guy courtside his rookie year, and you know,
Magic just simply had more moments of greatness in nine
NBA finals in twelve years. By the way, I'm gonna
give you some props. Your stories have a lot of layers.
I happen to be at the press conference in two
thousand and seven when Little Brother was in Volks. So

(01:15:54):
the folks don't have to they don't have to go
to it. I'm gonna give you the floor and tell
tell people how that all came about.

Speaker 6 (01:16:01):
Well, I remember that as the Braylan Edwards game because
that's when Michigan State was kicking the not out of
Michigan in ann Arbor and they finally just said, okay,
just throw the ball up to Brayln Edwards every other
play and let's just see if we can come back. Uh,
you know, end of the story. That's what happened. They
came back Mike Hart doing the post game and Mike

(01:16:23):
Harrt has this smirk on his face and he goes, yeah,
you know, it's like your little brother, you kind of
let them win a little bit, or let them know,
you know, let them because because you always know you're
gonna you're gonna come back. Now there's another layer to that.
If I feel really quick.

Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
Go ahead, I was there, man. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:16:40):
That So that followed. Dan Tony remember come in and
say it, yep, yep, Pride before the Fall, and it
did switch because at that point Lloyd was out. They
brought in rich Rod. Rich Rod thought that he can
recruit the same kids to Michigan that he's recruited at
West Virginia. Our lineman went from six five and three
point thirty to six two and two sixty because they

(01:17:01):
can move faster. We had guys like Sam McGuffey, and it.

Speaker 3 (01:17:05):
Just got of Texas, look at you.

Speaker 6 (01:17:10):
Yeah, And I'm a Michigan man.

Speaker 3 (01:17:12):
I didn't know all this time, so I was there
at the press conference. Sam McGuffey was a speechterra out
of Texas who never worked out. You know what I
remember most about that transition of seven. Of course, we
knew Lloyd was going to retire at the end of
the year, and they ended up his final game. They
beat They of course beat Tibo in Florida, and the
season started by losing to Appalachia State and then losing

(01:17:32):
to Oregon. But Ryan Mallady young man I gave a
tribute to who passed away sadly a few weeks back
had freshman year. No one remembers that went to Arkansas.
Rich Rock came in, kicked him out of town, brought
that good for three three five defense. I think he
was the biggest disaster in Michigan history. You got the
last word, VJ. O.

Speaker 6 (01:17:51):
Well, I also remember the home Toledo loss in the
Appalachians State up. You remember those two games Appalachia State,
they had the triple option that spread.

Speaker 3 (01:17:59):
It was New yep.

Speaker 6 (01:18:01):
But Dinnis Dixon came in the following week with Oregon.
We're the same offense, and they blew us off the field.
But then Michigan went on and won the rest of
their game except for the Ohio State game, and then
beat t bow in that crowd and that crew and
the outback ball. If I remember correctly, it was only
one year. So yeah, man, but some magic. I love him, man,

(01:18:22):
he's a great human being. In sports needs more guys
like that, just like talk radio, they need more guys
like Bernie Friddle.

Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
All right, VJ. We'll get you on back again when
you're ready. We never get enough stories. There's an old saying,
give me a fact, I'll learn it. Tell me the truth.
I believe it. Sure, a great story lives in my
heart the rest of my life. Enjoy the rest of
your weekend, VJA.

Speaker 6 (01:18:41):
Two. Man, God bless you and all your fans. Have
a great rest of your show.

Speaker 3 (01:18:44):
Right back at you. That is VJ. Husky Catch him
Saturday nights, four pm to seven Pacific along with Martin Weiss.
It's a really good show, very conversational. They're not afraid
to speak their mind. They bring receipts, excellent chemistry, and
there's the occasional humor. And I remember Martin. Martin said
something to Night about all these nerds. It didn't play football.

(01:19:05):
Don't know what they're talking about. He goes, I didn't
play football, but I'm not a nerd. But you got
you got to listen to that show to appreciate that
great story. And if you missed it, catch it on
the podcast. BJ covered a lot of ground. Another story
coming up Week zero is next week the PAC twelve demise.
I am telling you misguided hutzba, apathy, and incredible mismanagement.

(01:19:26):
This never should have happened. I'm gonna give my thoughts
on the PAC twelve. Coming up. I'm Bernie frattlew coming
to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio
Tirack dot Com studios. Keep it locked listening to the

dot Com the way tire buying should be. It's just
now starting to sink in. Wig zero is next Saturday,
USC a PAC twelve team currently soon to be on
the way to the Big Ten, will play San Jose State.
There will be no more PAC twelve after this year.
And if you have had any awareness of the PAC

(01:21:13):
twelve over the years, it's been a far more prestigious
conference than people realize. You've heard Steve Hartman talk about
it many times, and I will tell you I'm in
lockstep with that. Boy. Do I remember the days I
could utter our name? Steve will remember Shelton Diggs. Maybe
we talk about that another time. I digress the PAC

(01:21:35):
twelve turning into a pile of ashes. What happened, Well,
it's a combination of misguided hutzba apathy, hubrius and incredibly
astounding mismanagement. I can't be any more emphatic now, Believe
it or not, it really wasn't all that long ago.

(01:21:59):
That ESPN College Game Day was actually on the campus
of Stanford University, one of the remaining teams of the
Pack four. You heard me, right, wasn't that long ago? Okay,
twenty eleven November twenty eleven, they became the epicenter of
college football ESPN, and their college game Day was live
from Stanford. That night, the undefeated, third ranked Cardinal hosted

(01:22:27):
sixth ranked Oregon. By the way, not for nothing, the
Pac twelve also finished that regular season with three of
the top six teams in the country. It was also
the same year the Pac twelve signed what was then
the richest television contract in college sports history twelve years,
three billion dollars. You actually heard me right, The fact

(01:22:53):
that this same proud conference would be on the verge
of extinction just a dozen years later, he's in conceit.
Except it's not. They make no mistake. It was in
fact self inflicted. That's what makes this really bothered theme.
This is the story that matters in my view, because

(01:23:13):
we're just beginning to realize the collateral damage that's been
heaped upon thousands of Innison students and athletes and fans
and certainly a lumps. This is the story I'll file.
Twelve years of lethargy, terrible management and mismanagement cockiness. Hubris

(01:23:34):
turned a brilliant building a palace into a pilo ruins.
So Oregon and Washington is now following USC and UCLA
to the Big ten, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State. While
they're joining Colorado in the Big twelve. You find knuckleheads
on that cougar board in Utah. You didn't believe me,

(01:23:54):
did You said I wasn't plugged in, didn't know what
I was talking about. Oh, while we're in Utah, joined
the Big twelve. They may want no one wants them.
Some guy puts put me down, and put this guy
down as somebody who doesn't know anything. Sure, sure, I
accept your apology. Six days later you tossed down the deal.
They're on the way to the Big twelve. But I digress. Well.
Just months after that twenty eleven Stanford Oregon game, the

(01:24:16):
conference then broke round on a studio facility based in
San Francisco that would actually launch the PAC twelve network,
and it was big time guys like Ronnie Lott and
Marshawn Lynch. They were on set well one of their
first shows, alongside Larry Scott, who was who was the

(01:24:37):
commissioner at the time, of course, and this was kind
of a seminal moment, right they were gonna brand this
old PAC ten conference into a card carrying futuristic trendsetter
in college football, and their word was modern. We're gonna
make this modern. Well, the next twelve years, that building

(01:24:59):
was vacant. To the best of my knowledge from what
I've been able to gather, Well, go back two years
before that. PAC ten had a commissioner named Tom Hanson,
and in two thousand and nine he retired. He retired.
So what they did, They the PAC ten presidents got
together and they decided to go outside the industry. And

(01:25:21):
I heard Larry Scott at that time he was the
CEO of the Women's Tennis Association. Their mandate, what do
we want to do with the PAC twelve PAC ten?
We want to raise the profile of this conference because
we think we're unfairly hindered by the times only playing
and the outdated TV contract. Remember Fox Sports Net Okay.

(01:25:43):
So almost immediately Larry Scott, he won the room. He
almost Scott Texas and Oklahoma to join the PAC ten
PAC twelve then, and that didn't happen. That would have
been a sixteen team conference that he got and everybody
he wanted, But he did get Colorado and Utah. Then

(01:26:04):
he stunned the industry by somehow learning ESPN and Fox
into a bidding war with Comcast, and it actually quadrupled
the league's previous annual TV revenue. Now, how the hell
did this goes so wrong? From there when things were
looking so good? Circle twenty ten. But from that point
forward he kind of had the presidency. He got out

(01:26:25):
of his hand. They pretty much gave him anything he
wanted and what he wanted most. And I think this
is where the failure begins. He wanted to launch a
media company that he would run for a salary of
five million dollars a year. This turned out to be
an incredibly ill advised strategy, launching the PAC twelve network

(01:26:46):
without a proven media partner like an ESPN. It's been
well documented that this would ultimately be a bizarre decision
that would struggle from the get go. They had major
issues gaining distribution, never even came close to delivering what
they said their projective revenue figures would be. It was

(01:27:07):
a complete albatross. They never escaped it. But it wasn't
just Larry Scott who screwed this up. A few years back,
The Athletic reported that in twenty fifteen, the PAC twelve
had a deal to finally get the network on Direct TV,
and all the presidents, led by Arizona State's Michael Crow, well,

(01:27:30):
they rejected it. Now, had this been the SEC, I
think those guys would not have been left they allowed
it any more meetings ever again. But apparently at West
they have their own mind on doing things. And well,
I know I live out West right, so I don't
think it's ever been a fair stereotype in any way

(01:27:53):
to say the West Coast fans don't cary about football.
They absolutely do. I get it. They're not as religious
as as they are in Auburn or Alabama or LSU,
because you got forty million pro teams in California and
a beach in a mountains and lots of interests. Okay,
and it's a transient state. But to imply that those
people are not football fans, you're wrong. I went to

(01:28:15):
every Rose Bowl between seventy five and eighty three. Spectacular.
Was there on the sidelines when Charles White came in
for Ricky Leech, or check that came in for Ricky Bell,
who landed on his head, ran for one hundred and
twenty seven yards in stun Michigan, to this day, Ricky
Leech has pissed said, I can't believe we lost to
a little freshman. It wasn't a little freshman, it was
usc So you had powerhouses, right. Even SC became a

(01:28:41):
poster channel for dysfunction because when Pete Carroll left in
two thousand and nine, that thirteen year gap while they
waited for Lincoln Riley to arrive in twenty twenty two,
well SC, let's just see, it was an off decade. Yep.
And of course Oregon they even leveled a. Stanford certainly
level off after Harball left. Washington had a brief moment

(01:29:04):
under Chris Peterson. Mike Leech had his day in the
center for a minute at Wazoo. Somehow, sadly, to me,
UCLA is irrelevant and that's a shame because they used
to be one hell of a football program. And again,
I was there in New Year's Day nineteen seventy six
when Wally Henry and the Bruins ran all over heavily

(01:29:24):
favored Ohio State. But once again I digress. Utah sort
of became the league saving grace. They won the conference
title the past two years, but they weren't quite dynamic
enough to get to the College Football Playoff, which is
a recurring theme. As a matter of fact, this is
another bugaboo. The Pac twelf conference has failed to produce

(01:29:45):
it at College Football play college Football Playoff entrant for
the last six consecutive seasons, and that hurt their national brand.
And oh, by the way, the fact that they've been
under five hundred bulls since twenty seventeen, that hasn't really
helped either. The other thing, too, is I remember when

(01:30:07):
I was growing up, and certainly well into the nineties,
you had elite West Coroast recruits. They did not leave
the state. They went to USC or UCLA. They just did.
Now they go to Clemson or Alabama or Ohio State.
Where do you think Bryce Young went to high school?
Modern day? Where the end up Alabama? You get the picture,
all right? So look, every conference has, i think, to

(01:30:35):
the fan, to their competitors, a negative connotation that people
like to cook up. Right, what's the Big Ten? They're
always the slow conference, the Big Ten, the Big twelve
had like just the one true champion era, right, but
you never know who their commissioners were. Laris Scott became
the poster child, the human face of the Pac twelve

(01:30:57):
and their woes. They get mocked, he got criticized, The
fiasco started to pile up, and look, there are a
whole list of peccadillos that he was engaged in that
I'm not going to read because it doesn't really necessarily
make for good radio. But finally, Larry Scott was forced
out in twenty twenty one, and he's replaced and they
went after another search for him. Special guy by the

(01:31:18):
name of George Kliakoff who was the president of Entertainment
here in sports at MGM Resorts International here in Las Vegas.
Now he's an upbeat guy. He made a really good
first impression. But I think in retrospect George Khliakoff had
no idea the extent of the mess he was walking into.
There was a lot of distrust, there was a lot

(01:31:39):
of unpaid bills. I say that in air quotes, and
just a few weeks into the job, there was massive
upheaval across college sports. Okay, that being said, his shorts
aren't clean either. Every move that Kleakoff tried to make
to what fixed this mess was even more baffling than

(01:32:00):
the one before. So when Oklahoma and Texas left the
Big twelve for the SEC. Believe it or not, the
PAC twelf could have been an aggressor and they could
have absolutely fortified theirself for the future by adding schools
like Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma State. Instead they stood
pat Why why that fall? Klei Koff? Remember this? I

(01:32:26):
bet you don't. He had a handshake agreement with this
now infamous quote alliance with the ACC and the Big Ten.
That went over like a lead balloon. Okay, this past winner. Kleakoff,
who Edie once said in his introductory news conference he
would push for an expanded playoff, became one of three
commissioners to end up voting against it. I don't know,

(01:32:46):
I can't. I can't figure out what this guy was doing.
Then came the Big One USC and UCLA did the
Big Ten. Now its debatable whether at that point Kleiakoff
could have done anything to save that because the wheels
had been set in motion. But from that point forward,
Kleokov had just one job somehow negotiate a lucrative television
deal to keep the conference together. To say he feeled

(01:33:08):
spectacularly would absolutely be an understatement. My understanding it's I'm
not breaking any news here. It's been reported multiple outlets
that ESPN offered the big the PAC twelve thirty million
per team. But some professor with a calculator, maybe one
of those analytics guys who's way smarter than the rest

(01:33:30):
of us, that's what they always tell us. He said, no,
your schools are with fifty million. Okay, ESPN said, go
kick Rocks, and now you got nothing. It's like caddyshack.
You get nothing and like it, except you're not going
to like it. So look where are we. Back in December,

(01:33:51):
there was still hope. He knew Colorado was about to
hire Dion Sanders that would up the league's value. But
seven months later we know the real reason there was
never a deal. And I'm not going to call this subterfuge,
but what I'm going to say is confusion and misinformation
and hubris, as I keep saying, and misguided. Hutzbah. All right,

(01:34:17):
we didn't find out I believed my understanding. Kleiakoff was
completely blindsided that Colorado also chose to leave the conference
when they did. That was apparently days before Kleiakoff was
set to present a proposal to the networks and make
a final offer. He also believed that this unique offer
from Apple would be accepted by the members, which it
was not. And the sales pitch he gave to the

(01:34:41):
PAC twelve and their subscriber agents and their coaches and
their administrators. Within days, people were scratching their heads. So
the whole thing really, honestly, it's sad. It is sad
nobody died, but it's still sad. It's surreal. It's just bizarre.
Arizona State in Utah, I don't really know that they
really wanted to go to the Big twelve, but now
they want to because they have to Oregon, according to

(01:35:02):
multiple reports. By the way, they love the idea of
trying to be the top dog in a smaller conference.
Now they're going to a conference of eighteen people. And
I have no of the belief Oregon will perform well
in the Big ten better than you think. They pushed
to Ohio State around a couple of years ago. They
thought Michigan. I was at that game. They're gonna have

(01:35:24):
to compete with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, USC for
playoff pers but so what so what they would have
had to do that anyway, and the PAC twelve conference
is better than people realize. But in the end, they
all felt they had no choice. And now, if you're
at Stanford or Call or Oregon State or Washington State, man,
you're feeling left out. You're feeling disappointed. A couple of

(01:35:46):
weeks ago, I told the story about the old Southwest
Conference and how it had abandoned. It happened to the
Whack too in the Big East. So this is not
totally news. But the PAC twelve, this could have been
so avoided. And at one point, you know, they were
a major college football conference. And Bill Walt is right,
is the conference of championships in all sports. They've accumulated

(01:36:09):
five hundred and fifty three championships in the last hundred years.
So what's it gonna stand the tombstone? What's it gonna
say in the Corners report cause of death, gross failure
of leadership. I don't think it's sunk in yet, folks.
It's going to it's really gonna sink in. This is
the last year you'll see the PAC twelve in its

(01:36:29):
current state, and it's gonna go. It's gonna go by
very fast. Coming up. Jim Harbaugh back in the news
and no he's he's mon too happy. I'll tell you
what's going on there. I want to remind everybody tonight's
show is brought to you by Discover. At the end
of your first year, Discover credit cards automatically double all

(01:37:15):
Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to life at the
tyrack dot com studios in Las Vegas. Got a lot
of stuff to get to coming up. Bottom of the hour,
I will dive into the AFC preview AFC East. Excuse me,
give you some win totals and team odds and such.
Later on top of the hour, Ethan will share with
us his world travels and where he went these last

(01:37:36):
couple of weeks. Here's a spoiler alert. It's not Pat's
cheese Steaks, not Gino's cheese Steaks. Top of the hour,
what kind of brand new fool you followed by what
my name's We had a lot of stuff to get to,
all right, Jim Harbaugh. Well, I said it before. The
cheeseburger is always worse than the cover up. And they're
pissing at Arbor. Harball's pissed it in Arbor. But the

(01:37:58):
good news is he's not gonna have to that four
game a suspension. You know, everything's getting kicked to the
curb and the cans being kicked down the road until
twenty twenty four. But the eventual reckoning for Michigan and
their coach might be worse than sitting out games against
the easy opponents like Bowling Green and East Carolina and

(01:38:21):
UNLV and Rutgers. But there's a lot of tension surrounding
this football season because of what happened, and I think
the stakes could escalate next year, the operative word being
next year. And by the way, I had inquired about
Mike McDonald, Harball's very successful defensive coordinator while he was
at Michigan Now with Baltimore Ravens. Harball or checked that

(01:38:43):
McDonald got a show cause penalty, which is fairly serious business.
Why while I was found out he basically stonewalled the NCAA,
That's what I was told, did return any calls, didn't
return any letters, just gave him the stiff arm, and
there you have it. So what's going on here? Okay,
there was a negotiated resolution to the deal last year

(01:39:04):
that goes all the way back to COVID where Hardball
allegedly bought a recruit or a couple of recruits from Cheeseburgers,
and when questioned about it, I think he changed his
story from no, I never did that till I don't remember,
to hey, why the hell you're wasting your time with me?
You got bigger fish to fry. Have few? What's going
on here? All of a sudden, they started to dig deeper,
found some other infractions having to do with zoom calls

(01:39:25):
and text messaging and violation of practice times. I don't know.
These are all things I heard. I'm not indicting Michigan here,
I'm just reporting what I have heard. But I think
the narrative is, Hey, look man, Michigan's a proud institution.
One of the reasons we don't win national championships because
we don't cheat, all right, Well, and it's also kind

(01:39:46):
of a y mean Nancy Kerrigan deal. We got bigger
fish to fry. It's all there is to it. Here's
where it gets interesting. But my moles told me that
all of a sudden, when you get to January twenty
twenty four, now the stakes could change, and it's a
rite of passage right, death taxes, Santa Claus and Harball's
rumor to the NFL. Well, Harball's buyout, you know, it's

(01:40:08):
not like Jimbo Fisher's. It's two point two million. Yeah,
my buddy Arnie Spaniard carries around his pocket. Those are
his winnings from betting. The bottom line is that if
Harball really wants to go back to the NFL, and
he will have suitors, the door can swing wide open.
And I know that. You know. The narrative I heard was, Hey,
Sean Payton's fifty nine, he got a good deal. Jim

(01:40:30):
Harball's fifty nine. We believe he's even more accomplished than
Sean Payton. That's where this gets interesting. So if Harball
has a good year, gets back to the playoff, or
wins the whole thing, whatever he does, this is where
this gets interesting. And then of course, that would leave
the NCAAA to have to deal with Michigan in the wake.
If Harball is potentially gone. What's the moral of the

(01:40:52):
story here is his story is far from over because
the Committee on Infractions, they have discretion to enhance these
these penalties, these sanctions, and it's possible maybe they negotiate
the four game suspension differently in twenty twenty four, or
it could be hit a lot harder, potentially much harder.

(01:41:12):
They poked a bear and the bear doesn't like it, Well,
guess what, Harbaugh doesn't like it either, And it's classic
case for the cover up exceeds the cheeseburger. So stay tuned.
This is not done and there'll be more reprotage on
that when there is, and before you know, it'll be January,
and I guarantee that this will be in the forefront.
Coming up, we preview the AFC East, give you odds

(01:41:35):
win totals team previews. But first let's go back to
our guy, Kevin Wyatt with the.

Speaker 2 (01:41:40):
Latest Major League Baseball action. On Saturday, we had three
triple headers because we had three game schedule for Sunday
in Southern California that were moved because Hurricane Hillary is
bearing down the coast, so some doubleheaders played on a Saturday,
three of them, the Dodgers sweeping one of them against Miami,
both of those games three to one. Mookie Bett's two

(01:42:02):
solo home runs in the nightcap. The Diamondbacks took both
of their games in the doubleheader against the Padres, winning
that one six to four and eight one and the
Raisin Angels in Anaheim, playing two games, the halo Is
winning the first game seven to six, the Rays blowing
out the Angels in the second game eighteen to four.

(01:42:23):
The Seattle Mariners have now won five straight games. They
beat the Houston Astros tenth three. But Julio Rodriguez the
big story. He is on fire in the last four games.
He is seventeen for twenty two at the plate. That
is a major League record for the most hit over
eight four game stretch. Another team that's really playing well
is the Atlanta Braves. They've made it five straight wins,

(01:42:46):
beating the Giants six to five as Eddie Rosario had
a two run home run in the eighth inning. The
Orioles with a tenth inning win against the Athletics seven
to two. The Brewers where they blow out win against
the Rangers six to one, as the Rangers druging out
a dreadful eighteen times and the Blue Jays edged the
Cincinnati Reds four to three. It's a it's a depressing

(01:43:08):
time right now in New York, the Yankees falling to
their heated rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Final score in
that one eight one, seventh consecutive loss for the Bronx Bombers.
Scary moment in the NFL preseason in Green Bay as
the Patriots and Packers had their game called off in
the fourth quarter, Isaiah Bolen taking a hit from a

(01:43:30):
teammate that left him immobilized and it required him to
be carted off on a stretcher. The Patriots did say
Bolan had feeling in all of his extremities. However, he
will remain hospitalized in the area overnight for observation the
global game of football. Lila Messi with the first half
goal inter Miami wins the New MLS League's Cup against
Nashville and the Women's World Cup final coming tomorrow morning

(01:43:54):
or this morning, I should say, six am Eastern on Fox.

Speaker 3 (01:43:57):
Back to you, Bernie, so Kevin mentioned Hillary and you're
also good friends with Cartman, and I'm curious why do
they never give these Hurricanes the last name, like would
it be Hillary Swank? Would it be Hillary Clinton? Let's
go to Carton Cartman. Do you have any thoughts on that? Cartman?

Speaker 2 (01:44:14):
Huh, that's one I haven't thought.

Speaker 3 (01:44:16):
Yes, we'll get to it later. Yeah, you wowed me
with your chef singing last week. We might have to
do that later on. I'm telling it was good man.
You just broke right into song. All right. Speaking of song,
the AFC, the East, it's the most talked about division
for obvious reasons. You got Aaron Rodgers, that guy, he's

(01:44:38):
in New York and uh expected to be one of
the toughest divisions for the upcoming season. And you know,
not a lot of people are talking about the Bills.
The hell, they've only won the last three division titles.
But they're gonna be under pressure. Okay, I think they'll
be under pressure by the Jets thanks to Aaron Rodgers.
By the way, don't go to sleep on the Dolphins.
I think they've significantly upgraded their roster. And I'm not

(01:45:01):
one of those people that goes to sleep ever on
Bill Belichick. Yeah, Tom Brady's not there. They're gonna be
better than you think. They're gonna have a top ten defense.
But when you shake it all out, put it in
a blender. The Buffalo Bills are the odds on favorite
to win the East in twenty twenty three plus one thirty,
which means if you bet one hundred dollars, you win

(01:45:21):
one hundred and thirty. The Bills went thirteen to three
and twenty twenty two. Remember they didn't play seventeen games
because the DeMar Hamblin situation. They won the division by
four and a half games. That half game difference, again
was due to the Week seventeen class for the Bengals
that was suspended. Now, look, Josh Allen is still regarded
as I would say that, well, you can make a

(01:45:43):
case he's still the best quarterback in the division. He's
coming off a year three for over five thousand yards
forty two touchdowns, finished third in the MVP voting, and
he is tied with Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes for
the MVP odds for twenty twenty three. But Buffalo must
overcome some losses. They lost their state linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
He signed with the Bears. But the Bills, hopefully they

(01:46:05):
get back a healthy Von Miller, remember they lost him
last year. They also had a tight end Dalton Kincaid
in the first round of the draft to give Allen
another playmaker. But look, even if Buffalo gets out of
the AFC East, well, you've still got Kansas City in
the wake. Clearly the ward of the Super Bowl in
the FC is going to go through Kansas City. We'll

(01:46:26):
see what happened to Jets or plus two to fifty,
which means if you bet one hundred, you win two
fifty and they're projected at finished second. Again, this is
all theoretical. Jets had one of the best defenses in
the league last year, gave up the fourth fewest points,
fourth fewst yards per game in the league, largely do
because they had a couple of rookies. Sauce Gardner one

(01:46:50):
of the top players at his positioned in twenty twenty two,
quinnn Williams a very good pass rush. And even though
the Jets defense dominated, the offense spluttered. And you know
why they were seven and ten. You heard Robert Salad
drop an f bombs the other night. So Rogers, the
new Man under center. Hopefully he provides the stability, the experience,
and the greatness and key moments in high leverage situations. Remember,

(01:47:14):
six of the jets ten losses last year came in
one score games and the end of the year on
a six game losing streak after starting six and force
of the talent is there. They just have to put
it together and they have to stay consistent. These are
all platitudes they're gonna have to do it. Dolphins plus
two ninety to finish third, plus two ninety to win
the division the projected to finish third. You put up

(01:47:34):
one hundred, you win two ninety. They were the talk
of the town early last year because of the red
hot offense three and zero with wins over the Pats, Bills,
and Ravens the first three weeks of the season. Unfortunately,
TUA suffered the first of multiple injuries. They lost their mojo.
They finished the year nine to eight. But listen, as
long as Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle are healthy, you

(01:47:57):
got massive game breakers there. Man. They combined for over
three thousand yards receiving last year. That's a bundle. Defense
also gets Bradley Chubb in the middle and they made
a move for Jalen Ramsey in the offseason even though
he got hurt. Maybe they get him back in time
to be productive in December. That's the key. That's the

(01:48:17):
key to the Dolphins. They've got to stay healthy, especially
their quarterback. I believe in too. I think he's a
good quarterback. You may not know this, believe it or not.
Two Tagovaloa had more touchdown passes last year of forty
yards or more than any other quarterback. I guess you
can give Tyreek Hill credit for that too, but he's
getting in the ball. Finally, the pats, the odds makers. Again,

(01:48:39):
these are not predictions. These are merely instruments. They create
equal action. You know, books are not in the fortune
telling business during the managing of risk business, so they
can maximize profits and minimize risk. Pats are plus seven
to fifty. If you're feeling saucy and New England wins
the division and you put one hundred dollars on them
to bring back seven to fifty. So thank god. The

(01:49:01):
experiment of having an offensive coordinator who is I could
have a bunch of adjectives. Let's just call him Matt.
Having Matt Patricia gone should do wonders for the offense.
That did not work, okay, so they brought back Bill
O'Brien to remedy the situation. And look, he's hoping to

(01:49:22):
bring the best out of Mac Jones, give the team
a chance and get Jones' career going in the right direction. Look,
the Pats offense was lethargic last year, but their defense
was superb. They very much were. They ranked eighth and
yards allowed per game, tenth in points allowed per game,
and they produced the third most sacks per game. That's

(01:49:44):
big in this man's NFL. Getting the cornerback their first
round pick, chrischigan Zales, they are hoping he makes an
immediate impact and they're projecting him to start. Now here's
the key. When it was seven to zer last year
in games where they held their opponent to under twenty points,
but they were one to nine in games where the
defense gave up more than twenty points. So if you

(01:50:05):
can unlock this offense, it's potential and they can start
scoring more than twenty points a game. There's no reason
New England can have a good year. But you still
got to do it. Which brings us to our win totals,
which you're always dicey. The Buffalo Bills win total over
under is ten and a half. No, Remember, they won
thirteen games last year and they only played sixteen. It's
presumed it wasn't looking good at Cincinnati. They might have

(01:50:27):
got beat that night. But regardless the Bills. They've struggled
to get over the hump in the postseason, but they've
had no problems winning in the regular season. Now. They
were only four and two against the AFC East in
twenty twenty two, but they were nine to one against
the rest of all the other opponents. Here's the key.
Keep Josh Allen healthy, keep Von Miller healthy, and make

(01:50:48):
that middle of that defense as productive as it can be.
The key stat Buffalo has averaged. They've averaged twelve and
a half wins over the last three seasons, and they've
not won fewer than eleven in that same stretch. Can
Buffalo go eleven and six? Absolutely? For that not to cash,
Buffalo would have to lose seven games. I just don't
see it again. Barring injury, Buffalo over under ten and

(01:51:11):
a half wins. I could only look to the over
the New York Jets. This one is sinking like a
anviling a bugs bunny cartoon. It actually open up a
nine and a half. It's dropped quite a bit. Rarely
do teams come from nowhere unless they have a defense. Well,
the Jets have a defense. That said, much of the
turnaround was because of Sauce Gardner, but that's just defense.

(01:51:37):
Rogers had the sixth worst QBR on the league in
twenty twenty two, but the two years before that he
won MVP. New York's hopes rest on his shoulders. What
will Rogers do? Key stat The last Jets Pro Bowl
quarterback was Brett Favre, another ex screen pay packer, in
two thousand and eight. They went nine and seven that season,

(01:51:59):
Miami doff over under nine and a half wins. Now
the Dolphins are moving all in. They took out a
bunch of huge contracts they traded for stars. They also
have a weird, idiosyncratic coach accenter coach named Mike McDaniel.
But I think he's considered to be pretty brilliant actually,
but again, they won't do much if Tua keeps missing time.

(01:52:21):
I love to I hope those jiu jitsu lessons work.
They're saving grace. Their offense is a human highlight reel.
They may plays out of nothing, and they got some
game changes on defense. If the Dolphins put it together,
no reason they can't win ten games. It's a big if.
It's a stay away from me. Finally, the Pats, they
started out seven and a half wins. The betters have
pounded the under. They're down to seven now even six

(01:52:41):
and a half in some shots, the Pats may be
the best team to project. They're projected to finish last,
but they may be the best of the eight division
teams that are projected to finish last. Right, they're well coached,
they have a high floor. I don't know what they're
sealing is though. I think they can win ten games.
They got a great defense. But listen, they're gonna get

(01:53:02):
They're gonna have to get consistent quarterback play. And look,
they won seven games last year with that goofy Matt
Patricia and that crazy play against the Raiders that cost
him a game, or they don't want eight. So look,
elite offenses in the AFC East are gonna test that defense,
and there're gonna be some games where you're just gonna
have to match him blow for blow. Here's the key
stat in the three years Tom Brady has left. New

(01:53:26):
England's gone seven and nine, ten and seven and eight
and nine. There you have it, the FC East. It's
gonna be a good dog fight, and our eyes are
squarely on Aaron Rodgers of New York Jets. But don't
go to sleep on the other three teams. Coming up,
coming up, Ethan's gonna tell us about his trip. Looking
forward to hearing it. I'm Bernie Fraddle or come to
you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tyrack

(01:53:48):
dot com studios. Don't go away, you're listening to the
Bernie Fradtle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back
on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Com toy
live from the Tarak dot com studios here in the
Las Vegas coming up top of the hour. What kind
of random fool of you? Followed by what my name? Now?
You know? Years ago, Shaquille O'Neil went to Greece during
the two thousand and four Olympics, and when he got back,

(01:54:10):
or reporter asked him, hey, did you go to a
lot of places? Did you go to the Parthenon? Shack
looked at him and says, I don't remember. We went
to a lot of bars. Well, there you have it.
So I believe our guy Ethan Miller will have a
lot more detail about the places he went. So, Ethan,
you left, I guess it was August third.

Speaker 8 (01:54:29):
Was at it August third? I was out.

Speaker 3 (01:54:31):
So tell us your journey.

Speaker 8 (01:54:33):
All right, Well, it first started on Ibera Ibera, Iberia.
You know airways. Have you ever been on that, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (01:54:44):
Harri Oh really? Oh really horrible?

Speaker 3 (01:54:47):
Did you a movie or anything? Oh?

Speaker 8 (01:54:49):
My, the movie was fine, but it felt like the
movie screen was like you were in a two thousand
and six VOLKSWAGENO. That's what it is.

Speaker 3 (01:54:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:54:58):
No, they didn't give you peanuts. They didn't give you.
I swear, Bernie, I couldn't lie to you. So that
you're in the air for twelve hours, you feel like
you're on like Septa.

Speaker 3 (01:55:07):
I don't know what's your destination.

Speaker 8 (01:55:09):
So we fly to Barcelona. I'll get through that. Barcelona, Spain, Barcelona, Spain.

Speaker 3 (01:55:14):
So okay.

Speaker 8 (01:55:15):
I meet the family in Barcelona because we're all coming
from different places, Miami and Philly. So we all meet there.
We get on a cruise and we go to our
first stop. Well, in Barcelona, we walked around and I
gotta be honest. Barcelona is cool, but it's nothing special.
It's just like Los Angeles and New York combined, you know,

(01:55:37):
all right, So that's Mark's laughing over here, but it's true,
it's true. And then we went to can France was
our first stop. So that was that was cool. We
did a we walked around and just checked it, went
to some farm, did that, all good stuff. And then

(01:55:59):
we went to Italy port A Fino, which was really cool.
Have you been to No, you got to get the
porn Afino, Bernie, just tell tell Fox listen, I need
two weeks. I'm going to know.

Speaker 3 (01:56:10):
I should because I'm one hundred percent. I'm Italian, I'm
in Italy.

Speaker 8 (01:56:13):
I got it.

Speaker 3 (01:56:14):
I should you know I should be shot?

Speaker 8 (01:56:16):
Yeah, I go ahead, Yeah, it says yeah. Porto and
then we went to Rome. Rome was incredible. I will
say Rome is legit. Oh boy, it's definitely no doubt
about it. And then after that we went to where

(01:56:37):
did we go? Saint Luca? You ever hear that?

Speaker 3 (01:56:41):
What countries that in Italy? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (01:56:43):
But I don't know that I have yeah, I have
any I didn't know that place either, but I.

Speaker 3 (01:56:47):
Think that I saw that movie Luca with Charlie Sheen
a few years ago. Never mind, forget whatever.

Speaker 8 (01:56:53):
Uh you know, Florence I think is like an hour.

Speaker 3 (01:56:59):
Yeah, I never I've talked to people. Did you go
to Florence? No we didn't, Okay, never mind continue.

Speaker 8 (01:57:03):
On me, no, you know whatever. So yeah, and then
we went to some island Corsica in France, and then
we made our baby back to Barcelona and I made
my way here. But it was a great time, great
family time. Uh, it was great being in Europe. It

(01:57:23):
was my first time.

Speaker 3 (01:57:24):
It was like my span two weeks, right, this was
the two weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:57:26):
Yeah, it was like.

Speaker 3 (01:57:28):
Now I want to ask you a couple of questions.
What was your favorite food? Which country had you know
the best food?

Speaker 8 (01:57:33):
Yeah? I would say it was when we were in
Porto Fino. We went to this wine winery and we
had this Italian lady. She like cooked us a full
course like Italian meal in the PASTA ravioli with cheese

(01:57:54):
was probably the best thing that's ever ended my sister.

Speaker 3 (01:57:57):
Wow, probably all fresh, not out of a can. So
the other question I have is which country or which
city had your favorite accommodations like the hotel where you
walk in and go, oh, this is cool and it's comfortable,
and it was clean, and it was just had amenities.
Which country had the best.

Speaker 8 (01:58:15):
I would probably say, can okay, France? Yeah, it was,
I will tell you this though. Sorry to my French people.
I don't know why they're so angry. You know, they
were everywhere you went, they looked at us like we
were committing a crime for walking on their their land,
you know.

Speaker 3 (01:58:35):
Horrible.

Speaker 8 (01:58:36):
I mean, I don't know why, but you know, because
I'm me, or maybe because I'm American, I don't know,
you know, who knows.

Speaker 3 (01:58:42):
That's interesting.

Speaker 8 (01:58:44):
Yeah. So that was that and but but it was very,
very nice, unbelievable, one of the nicest places I've ever seen.

Speaker 2 (01:58:51):
But yeah, I.

Speaker 8 (01:58:51):
Mean just it was my mom's dream one day to
take the family. She took the family, which was great.
So we had a good time, all right. Off the
bucket list and yep, exciting stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:59:02):
Good stuff. Ethan will welcome back, and it sounds like
you had a really neat life experience in a good time.
And we'll have to write a letter to Iberia Airlines
and from what the hell is good? I hope they
hell's going on there.

Speaker 8 (01:59:14):
Let us know, email us, email me, you know, tweet
us Iberia. We're trying to figure this out.

Speaker 3 (01:59:19):
All right, you start serving peanuts? Yeah, all right, coming
out top of the hour? What kind of brand fool?
What kind of brand new fool of you? Followed by
what my name? Keep it locked? Bernie Frattle Show, Fox
Sports Radio. That's right, you heard the man. Bernie Fraddle
Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle.

(01:59:39):
We're come to you live from the tyrat dot com
studios Fox Sports Radio here in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tyrack
dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection,
fast fore shipping for you, road azer protection and over
ten thousand recommended installers tyrec dot com. The way tire
buying should be. Well, you know what, you love it.
You can't without it because every week on the Bernie

(02:00:00):
Fraddle Show two way in Pacific, five am Eastern, we
take a little dive into the world of oddity and weirdness.
And of course you know that every day across this
great land of ours, and certainly around the globe, people
do things. Sometimes they are felonious, sometimes they are innocuous.
Sometimes they land you in jail. But any way you

(02:00:23):
slice it, these are activities people engaged in It always
leave us scratching our heads and asking ourselves a simple question,
what kind of brand new fool you?

Speaker 8 (02:00:37):
So?

Speaker 2 (02:00:38):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 4 (02:00:41):
Well?

Speaker 3 (02:00:41):
I've been doing this now almost two years, and I
think what I'm about to share with you might be
the weirdest one I've ever I've ever reported on. And
of course wait till the very end, because you get
an extra kick out of this. So we take you
to Panama City Beach, Florida. Say hello to a gentleman
by the name of Derrek Porter, now Derek from Georgia.

(02:01:05):
So what the hell he was doing in Panama I
don't know. But he found himself inside a Panama City
Beach church because he took a cinder block and broke
into the church, smashed the window at the Church of God,
at the Emerald Beach Church of God, and he got
inside a couple of weeks ago, and a woman working

(02:01:27):
in the church heard the sound and got the hell
out of there. But she got she must have called
the police because they ended up showing up. But before
I get to that point, when Porter got inside the church.
He caused approximately eight thousand dollars worth of damage. Then
he started to aload anything he could get his hand on,
like electronics, a television, a computer, started loading up his truck,

(02:01:50):
including the church's money bag. Then all of a sudden,
the deputies from the Panama City Police Department got there.
They got to the church, and they found him. They
found meth on him, They found drug paraphernalia on them.
But here is the weird part. When they got there,

(02:02:13):
he was holding his head down under a pool of
water in the church. You know what those are. Those
are baptismals, right, So his claim was that he was
baptizing himself in the churches baptistory pool. Is that a word, baptistory?
You know what I'm trying to tell you here. But

(02:02:34):
what's interesting is body camera footage actually shows that he
was hot and sweaty and instead of baptising himself, basically
what he decided to do was beat the heat and
cool off from the baptismal by sticking his face in
the baptismal. By the way, this is a guy with

(02:02:55):
a body of work. He was already out of jail
on bond for burglary in Georgia at least charged with burglary.
I would occupied structure, criminal mischief, possession of myth, and
possession of drug paraphernalia, all from a church in Panama City, Florida.
This guy actually does need to be baptized. The only
thing I can say is, oh, boy, Derek Porter, what

(02:03:19):
kind of brand news fool?

Speaker 8 (02:03:20):
Are you?

Speaker 3 (02:03:21):
All right? Ethan? If you've done this before? I think
you have right.

Speaker 8 (02:03:25):
Yeah, I'm locked in. I've done it before. We've uh,
we've had the right time together.

Speaker 3 (02:03:29):
Go get him, buddy, you go, you go next? All right?

Speaker 8 (02:03:31):
Why not? So that's a good story, by the way, Bernie,
kind of crazy that was?

Speaker 3 (02:03:36):
That to me is the weirdest one I've ever done.
I swear to God.

Speaker 8 (02:03:38):
Yeah, that was breaking into a church.

Speaker 3 (02:03:40):
Yeah, go ahead, you got the floor.

Speaker 8 (02:03:43):
That's definitely uh, definitely crazy. Okay, Uh, I don't know
if I could top that. But this is a little
nuts too. Uh. We're gonna go to Fort Lauderdale, South Florida,
and we're gonna go to Wilton Manors and will and Manners.
There was a outbreak of bunnies. Bunnies got out, and

(02:04:04):
I guess they kept making more bunnies and the community
is out in arms. There's kind of like a community
war going on. So this guy, they don't mention his name,
which is also weird. Oh they do Mitchell something. I
don't want to say his full name because he's that'd

(02:04:25):
be weird. He goes and grabs all these bunnies and
he like starts feeding them to his snake.

Speaker 3 (02:04:32):
Right, Oh my god.

Speaker 8 (02:04:35):
So people in the community started freaking out, started raising
money so they could get the bunnies and put him
in a better home or like put him in a home,
get him out of the community. So they want to
get bet the snakes. And this is ongoing. And you know,
if you want to keep up the date MPR's reporting

(02:04:55):
on it, you just check that out.

Speaker 3 (02:04:57):
And yeah, well we'll kind of brain new fool is
this guy without the last name our good job, good
job Ethan. All right, Kevin Wyatt, you are becoming a
veteran at this. What do you got for us today?

Speaker 2 (02:05:07):
Oh yeah, I've had plenty of times gone into dumb
tourists because there's no shortage of them. And we have
a couple here we go to Paris, two American tourists
were found by security guards in the early hours Monday
morning because they were a found passed out drunk in
the Eiffel Tower. They were found in an area normally
close to the public between the tower second and third levels,

(02:05:30):
and the men appeared to have got stuck because of
how drunk they were. That's according to Paris prosecutors. They
couldn't find their way out. They hopped some barriers into
restricted areas and eventually passed out, so they did not
pose any threat. However, they are still being referred to
by police or two police for prosecution that they have
not been named in this report. So unidentified tourists in

(02:05:54):
Paris at the Eiffel Tower. What kind of brand new
fools are you?

Speaker 3 (02:05:57):
So what's interesting? Is it against the law to be
drunk in the Eiffel Tower.

Speaker 2 (02:06:01):
No, they went to a restricted area and and we're there.
They passed out and were there after it had closed
for the night, so they were there when it was open,
could not find their way out. I decided to hop
some barriers for some reason, and okay, spent the night there.

Speaker 3 (02:06:19):
Yeah, maybe that cheap French wine kicked in. All right,
sounds good, great job guys, And of course that segues
into our second favorite bit, which we lovingly referred to
as what my name? All right? So justin fields of
the Chicago Bears is twenty five to one to win
the MVP this year in the NFL. The last Chicago

(02:06:43):
Bear MVP was in nineteen seventy seven. It was me,
what my name? Ethan Miller? What my name?

Speaker 8 (02:06:53):
God?

Speaker 9 (02:06:53):
What?

Speaker 8 (02:06:54):
Oh man? I can't, I gotta, I don't know, I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:06:57):
I'm all right, no problem, all right, So justin in fields,
twenty five to one the win the MVP. The last
MVP who played for the Chicago Bears was back in
nineteen seventy seven, Kevin Wyrett. What my name?

Speaker 2 (02:07:11):
Walter Peyton?

Speaker 3 (02:07:12):
Nicely done? There you go, sweetness. Great guy passed away
too soon. I was staying football. You've heard it a
bazillion times by now. The last time the Detroit Lions
won their division was nineteen ninety three, and I was
the head coach, Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 8 (02:07:32):
Oh my god?

Speaker 3 (02:07:35):
All right?

Speaker 8 (02:07:35):
Kevin?

Speaker 2 (02:07:37):
My guess with the isn't wasn't the mooch the coach
back then, Steve Mariucci.

Speaker 3 (02:07:41):
Mooch? It was not mooch. It was Steve Mariucci was
hired in two thousand and two and his first year
was two thousand and three. But it wasn't Mucci. It
was actually Wayne Fox captain Wino all right man. But
believe it or not, he got to the playoffs six times,

(02:08:02):
and he was the you know, I'll never forget that game.
It was January fifth, nineteen ninety two. Wow, and they
beat the Dallas Cowboys thirty eight to six. John Madden
was on the call that day, and I remember him saying,
you're looking at the two teams of the nineties. He
was half right. Dallas went on to win three Super Bowls.
Lions never won another playoff game, but they did get

(02:08:24):
to the playoffs, believe it or not with Barry Sanders
five times. You know, five times, Bernie.

Speaker 8 (02:08:28):
You know what's similar about those two teams? Yeah, both
losing franchises in twenty first century.

Speaker 3 (02:08:34):
Well that's the good point score extra points for Ethan
on that one. All right, let's stay at football. I
had more touchdown passes of north of forty yards last
season than any quarterback of the National Football League. Eithan
Miller went my name.

Speaker 8 (02:08:54):
I'm gonna go Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 3 (02:08:56):
Not Patrick Mahomes. I teased this earlier in the show
about an hour ago. I had more touchdown passes of
forty yards or more last season than any other quarterback
in the National Football League. Kevin Wired.

Speaker 2 (02:09:07):
What my name Josh Allen?

Speaker 3 (02:09:10):
Not Josh Allen. It's actually to a tug of Valoa. Wow,
to a tuga aloa. I'm big to a fan. I
hope he does well this year. All right? In nineteen
try that again in English. In twenty twenty two, I
ranked number one of the National Football League over every
other running back when it came to yards after contact.
Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 8 (02:09:32):
Uh uh, Christian mccaffney.

Speaker 3 (02:09:36):
Maybe that's a good guess. Not Christian McCaffrey. Twenty twenty two,
I ranked number one of the National Football League over
all running backs when it came to yards after contact.
Kevin Wire, What.

Speaker 2 (02:09:48):
My name Josh Jacobs, Not Josh Jacobs.

Speaker 3 (02:09:51):
That's another good one. He ran for bazillion yards last
year for the Raiders. I'll give you guys a clue.
He plays for Dallas. Who can get it?

Speaker 8 (02:09:59):
Wow, Tony there it is Tony Pollard.

Speaker 3 (02:10:01):
Yep. All right. During this week in two thousand and eight.
I set the world record for one hundred meters nine
point sixty nine. Kevin Wyret, what my name? You bolt?
Nicely done on this day. Let's go to Major League Baseball.

(02:10:26):
On this day in twenty twelve, I threw the only
no hitter in the history of the Seattle Mariners franchise.
Ethan Miller. What my name?

Speaker 8 (02:10:39):
Oh, I don't know?

Speaker 3 (02:10:45):
It's all right? All right? This week in twenty twelve,
I threw the only no hitter in the Seattle Mariner's history.
Kevin Wyret, What my name, oh, King Felix, Felix Hernandez.
Nicely done, nicely done? Now this one I think you
guys should get if you happened to glance at the

(02:11:06):
Dodger game Friday night, So what was distinctive about the
Friday night game? Tony Gonsolin gave up five home runs
to the Miami Marlins. Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin gave up
five home runs to the Marlins Friday night. The last
Dodger pitcher to do that, give up five home runs
to an opponent was in nineteen seventy three. Ethan Miller.

(02:11:31):
What my name.

Speaker 8 (02:11:33):
You know? If I knew this I should have known
them all, so I don't know it.

Speaker 3 (02:11:37):
No problem, buddy. It's a pretty famous it's a pretty
famous pitcher. Tony Gonsolin gave up five home runs Friday
Night to the Marlins pitching for the Dodgers. Last time
that happened to a pitcher in a Dodgers uniform was
nineteen seventy three. Kevin Wired, what my name?

Speaker 2 (02:11:51):
I'm just guessing. Don Sutton, Well.

Speaker 3 (02:11:54):
You got it, I was, I was. I was gonna
give another big time clue. I actually once had drinks
with Don Sudden that the Stony River rest or Stony
River Restaurant in Buckhead, Georgia, is a great guy. So
you would have gotten if you know that would.

Speaker 2 (02:12:14):
Not that being a Dodger fan. I just had to
think of, Okay, Dodger pitcher probably had to be kind
of famous nineteen seventy three, and narrowed it down a
little bit process of elimination.

Speaker 3 (02:12:23):
That was his, that was his vintage. Well, I get you,
and you're you're a Dodger fan, so Ethan probably you
were living in Philly, right, whatever the.

Speaker 8 (02:12:30):
Case may be, the bottom one here knows, it's all good.

Speaker 3 (02:12:33):
It's all good. It's all fun and games, folks, you
know this is only a this is only an exhibition,
not a competition. Please no wagering, all fun, though somebody
loses an eye, and so far no one's lost an eye.
I'm gonna do this one in honor of Patrick SWEEKA,
because if you listened to week he had, I'm gonna

(02:12:56):
let Ethan go first, but he might still get okay,
because there's there's a little hidden clue here. Okay. I'm
a former U c l A pitcher, former Major league pitcher,
and I now have a podcast called Bauer Bites Ethan Miller.
What my name?

Speaker 8 (02:13:15):
I mean, that's got to be Trevor Bauer.

Speaker 3 (02:13:16):
There you go, There you go. And I know you
would have gotten it to Ethan because every week I
could say, who's the first man to land on the moon?
Trevor Bauer. I mean, it's like, I can't help it,
it's he makes me laugh.

Speaker 2 (02:13:29):
I could have guessed it before you even asked the
question with that clue.

Speaker 3 (02:13:32):
So yeah, that was one of those setup questions, you know.
And I'm gonna actually I'm gonna probably ask it next
week when if Patrick's back. But great job, guys, great
job on on brand New fool and and and what

(02:16:24):
is not involved, But thirty five minutes from now, the
World Cup Soccer women's tournament will come to an end.
England tease it up against Spain. I believe England will
will be the victor. And you know, we're in that

(02:16:44):
time of the year now where the intersection of baseball
as the Pennant races wind down and merge with football season,
which is starting. And I gotta tell you that I
enjoy these progressive plays of the day. They're usually current.
They usually have to do with something you don't see

(02:17:06):
every day. Well, something you also don't see every day
happened in a preseason game, and if you missed it before,
I want to share this because this kind of story
is incredible to me. Okay, Week one of the NFL
preseason Stetson Bennett, you remember him back to back championship
with Georgie's with the Rams now trying to make that roster.
He got sacked last week. Okay, well that happens. Sacks happened, right,

(02:17:30):
But that doesn't begin to tell the story. For folks
who think that preseason football might be insignificant, and I
don't think it is. Ten years I covered the Lions,
I will tell you that we enjoyed it. It gave
position coaches, personnel directors, GMS, head coaches, coordinators a chance

(02:17:50):
to evaluate their talent, and live situations, a chance for
position battles to be decided. And oftentimes one of the
things that coaches looked at was the progress of a
first round draft choice, particularly from one year to the next.
And you can't see that in pray. You can only
do so much in practice, and you can only do
so much in a simulated scrimmage. But you got a

(02:18:12):
live game with lights on TV and referees and clocks,
you have more normalcy. I will tell you the forty
nine ers had a phenomenal quarterback prospect. I know the
guy's in barrier, gonna remember this guy tweet at me
if you do, please, Giovanni Carmazi, he came out of
college and Steve Mariucci is as good Italian evaluator as

(02:18:33):
you will ever find, which was a great guy in Detroit.
They kind of missed on Giovanni Carmazi. The lights were
just too bright for him and they knew it right away.
In the first ever in the first ever preseason game
that he played well. In the first ever preseason game
cig Okoya played, he sacked Stetson Bennett. You say to me, well, okay,
so still, what's the big deal. Well, I'm gonna tell

(02:18:54):
you what the big deal is. Cig Okoya is from Nigeria.
He's twenty one years He just started learning to play
football two years ago. He hasn't played football. In fact,
cg Okoya has never once played in an organized game.
No Pop Warner, no youth football, no high school, no

(02:19:16):
club football, certainly no college football, and of course absolutely
no NFL football until last Saturday. So what I am
telling you is cg Okoya. And oh, by the way,
he has zero relation to the legend Christian Okoya, the
Nigerian nightmare back in the mid eighties who played for
Kansas City. He is C. Diokoya. Although he is Nigerian,

(02:19:38):
he's not related to Christian Okoya in any way. I
checked that out never played in a single organized game
on any level, much less the NFL till last Saturday.
But he gets in the game. Not only does he
get in the game, he gets a sack. The fact
that he was in a camp, considering where his life
was three years ago, the fact that he was suited

(02:19:59):
up and on the is incredibly impressive. The fact that
he got the sack is even more so. And you
can think a group, you can think an organization by
the name of the International Player Pathway and they're developing talent,
and OCU and Yor played a big role in getting
CJ Okoya discovered. So the Elliday La Cruz another star

(02:20:23):
every day, the beauty of forces. Every day in the world,
a new star is born. And you hadn't heard of
Elie de la Cruz six months ago, and you hadn't
heard of CGA Koya even one week ago. And that
is one of the things that makes doing is so
much fun. We come across stories, we come across the
information that is out of the unusual, out of the usual,
excuse me, out of the ordinary coming up Chris Purfet's

(02:20:46):
World of soccer. But first we go back to our guy,
Kevin Wirt with the latest.

Speaker 2 (02:20:52):
Well, we had three doubleheaders in Major League Baseball on Saturday.
That's because Hurricane Hillary heading for California, so Major League
Baseball did move some games the schedule for Sunday in
southern California. Two Saturday, the Dodgers getting two wins against
the Marlins, winning both of those games three one, Mookie
Betts going deep twice in the second game. The Diamondbacks

(02:21:12):
also getting two wins on Saturday. They beat the Padres
in the first game six to four, second game eight
to one. Raisin Angels played in the other doubleheader game
and it was a split one, with the Halos taking
the first game seven to six, but the Rays and
a blowout win in game number two, eighteen to four.
The Seattle Mariners on a roll. They've won five straight games.

(02:21:34):
They beat the Houston Astros ten to three. Julio Rodriguez,
though on fire, seventeen hits in four games. That's a
new MLB record. He's seventeen for twenty two at the
plate overall. The Braves also playing some hot baseball. They've
won five straight games. They beat the Giants six to five,
Eddie Rozario with a two run home run in the
eighth inning. The Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics seven to

(02:21:56):
two in ten innings. The Brewers over the Rangers six
to one, as the Texas range of striking in a
dreadful eighteen times in that loss. The Blue Jays edging
the Reds four to three, the Red Sox beating their
heated rival the Yankees eight to one, as the Bronx
Bombers have now lost seven in a row. And in
the NFL preseason, scary moment in Green Bay, Patriots and

(02:22:18):
Packers had the game called off in the fourth quarter
because Isaiah Bolden took a hit from a teammate that
left him i mobilized and required him to be carted
off on a stretcher. The Patriots did say that Bolden
had feeling in all of his extremities. However, he will
remain hospitalized overnight for observation. Soccer Lionel Messi scored in
the first half in Miami. Is won the New MLS

(02:22:40):
League's Cup on penalty kicks, and in the Women's World
Cup were about thirty minutes or so from kickoff. In
the Women's World Cup final Spain in England. That will
get going can be seen on Fox. Back to you, Bernie.

Speaker 3 (02:22:54):
All right, Kevin, you really brought down the house last
week with your addition to the chef. Do you want
to do on?

Speaker 2 (02:23:00):
Let's do it? Let's go baby, I'm gonna mark love
to you, wo man, gonna lay you down by the fire.

Speaker 3 (02:23:07):
Kevin Wired killing it as the chef from South Park.
Don't worry, folks, There'll be more where that came from.
That's why you listened to the Bernie Frouder Show, all right.
Another reason at this time every week, Look, it's twenty
eight minutes away from the final game and the Women's
World Cup. I know the USA well not three peep.
Should still be a very entertaining contest between England and Spain.

(02:23:31):
But irrespective always it's not just the World Cup. There's
always news in the world of sport. That's why at
this time every week we bring you Chris Burpfett's World
of Soccer.

Speaker 1 (02:23:42):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum. It's
all here in this report from the World of Soccer.

Speaker 3 (02:24:03):
Bernie.

Speaker 10 (02:24:04):
You know me, I like to hit on about two
or three topics in the world of soccer. I'd like
to say we're in the middle of Premier League previews
here for the early season, but I think we have
to put it aside right now. This week has seen
an unprecedented conversation once again into the nature soccer in
the United States. Lionel Messi, the great One, who has
been scoring nine goals in six games since arriving at

(02:24:26):
Inner Miami and playing in the League's Cup for that club,
has told media, of course, that he believes that MLS
isn't really that far behind the European the mega leagues
of the world, such as the Premier League, La Liga Syria,
and no, that's not that far in the future. That
has every opportunity to catch up with European football before

(02:24:47):
the twenty twenty six World Cup comes to North America. Now,
this is a story that the United States has heard before,
that Americans have heard before, and some older people might
be very skeptical about such. Soccer is, after all, seen
as a foreign sport, a sport that has come to
the shores several times before, knocked on the door several

(02:25:09):
times before, and for one reason or another, just hasn't
caught on that same way, but he has a point
that it's not that far behind. MLS is a thirty
year history, beginning in ninety three as part of the
bid to bring the World Cup here in ninety four,
which did happen, but it has always kind of grown
in leaps and spurts, and nothing I think feels better

(02:25:30):
to talk about with MLS than average attendance right now.
In the league's twenty twenty two years, before Messi even
was a factor, clubs were seeing an average of over
twenty thousand fans in attendance. Three of those clubs, Atlanta,
Charlotte and Seattle, averaged more than thirty thousand fans per match. Now,

(02:25:53):
by comparison, the NBA just considered themselves to have a
record year in attendance, averaging eighteen thousand. Now, granted those
are arenas, these are a little bit larger, but we're
also not talking about NFL stadiums, And ultimately I look
at the pure number rather than any kind of limitation,
and there's been plenty of NBA arenas that haven't been
able to fill up to capacity anyway here, So it

(02:26:14):
keeps the NBA afloat above something like soccer. It's ultimately
television ratings. It's ultimately that drives a lot of our
cultural cachet when talking about the NBA, and quite frankly,
the MLS hasn't had them. This is ultimately a problem
in that we are as a sports culture obsessed with
television ratings. And yes, the NBA right now is a

(02:26:35):
bigger television product than MLS, so is baseball, and so
is the National Hockey League as well. However, we're also
entering the streaming era where television ratings just don't matter.
And MLS by and large has gone to the streaming
era with their deal with Apple TV, issueing many of
the over the air networks except for some regional sports coverage,

(02:26:59):
but they are no longer on a lot of these
places where they would get ratings. Now, streaming numbers can
be a little fugazy, but we know for a fact
that Apple TV's subscriber numbers have almost tripled since Leonel
Messi has come here, since picking up the MLS package
as part of one of the season passes you can
get on Apple TV. It's an unequivocal good thing and

(02:27:21):
people are coming to this platform, not a endemic sports platform,
but Apple TV to watch Major League Soccer. How do
you sell people on a league like this. You give
them stars, you give them compelling matchups, and you keep
bringing more and more stars to the table. That's what
MLS has been able to scratch by getting someone like
Leonel Messi. And to be honest, that also then lies

(02:27:44):
in part to the next part of this equation, which
is can MLS be as good as the top leagues
in UEFA in Europe? Because ultimately, Bernie, we as Americans
like to know that our sport, the sport we watch,
is the best in the world. We probably would not
watch basketball if Liga ACB in Spain had better competition

(02:28:07):
than the NBA. We would not watch Major League Baseball
if Japan on the regular signed all the best players
in the world, be they American, Japanese, Caribbean wherever, if
that was the state of things instead of Major League Baseball. Here,
we want to be number one. We want to be
number one no matter what in our sports, and when

(02:28:30):
we play the championship, it's to be the best in
the world. That's the next hurdle MLS has to pass
because ultimately that is what's going to draw a lot
of the attention that's what's going to make MLS a
topic to talk about on sports talk radio over the
Premier League, over La Liga, over other sports in America.

(02:28:51):
They're on a good foot right now having Lionel Messi,
one of the greatest in the world here, but it
needs to go further than that, and honestly points for
them if they want to keep growing and capturing hearts
and mind. Number one, and the biggest one right now
is MLS has to scrap their salary cap. I know
it's very American, but in the globe it does no

(02:29:14):
help for you. You want to get big stars like Lionel Messi,
than having three designated players per team that don't count
against the salary cap isn't going to be enough. You
are just ultimately, at the end of the day, because
of the cap, going to get outspent on many of
these guys in European clubs that you should be bringing over.
The last thing you should be thinking about is your

(02:29:36):
salary cap. When you want to try to bid out
Manchester United for the services of someone like Marcus Rashford
or against Bayern Munich for someone like Harry Kane. Those
are legitimate stars you could bring over but you can't
because you have tied your own hands on salaries. I
understand that salary caps have long had a role in
the United States sports to enforce fairness and parody. That

(02:29:59):
is quite simply not a high priority in the modern
landscape of soccer, where big spenders like Manchester City and
Real Madrid exist. You are up against some deep, deep,
deep pocket books. You know who's not going to have
their hands tied on salaries, the Saudi Super League, who
has their own intentions of going global themselves, and right

(02:30:20):
now MLS you're going to have to start thinking about
a competition with them, because they're going to have the
pocket books for that. That said, I largely agree with
Lionel Messi. I don't know about twenty twenty six because
that's not that far away now, but there's a few
things MLS can do, and if they can really capitalize
on Messy Mania, they can absolutely move themselves into being

(02:30:41):
one of the more popular sports in this country and
maybe just maybe not that far behind UEFA. We'll say nothing,
of course that MLS probably else needs promotion, relegation. We're
out of time here, Bernie. We will see you next
time on the World of soccer.

Speaker 3 (02:30:57):
All right, thanks Chris, and I think that you'd have
to be a blind man not to see that Messi
has incredibly moved the needle. He scores goals right and
left because he's heading shoulders above anybody in that league.
We are not talking about a guy who's just another player.
He's his generation's pele. He came over from Argentina. If

(02:31:19):
you recall last December when we were covering the Men's
World Cup pretty fervidly. Messi had done everything in his
career except the Proverbio World Cup championship, and it loomed
over him. And he's what thirty six, thirty seven years old,
thirty eight years old, and he the thought that he
might have to wait another four years. It was that
glaring thing missing on his resume. When he came through

(02:31:42):
unbelievably as Argentina lockhorns with France in an epic game,
killing him and Boppe and Messi with the stars. Messi prevailed.
He's currently, I believe, the greatest player in the world,
the biggest draw, and just coming to Miami. He has
completely energized the MLS and look, we are nineteen minutes
away from Spain and England going into battles. You know,

(02:32:04):
whoever comes out on top will be the winner of
the twenty twenty three Women's World Cup. They're both first
time finalists. Remember the Women's World Cup's only been going
on since nineteen ninety one. Spain is the underdog. So look,
England's played really well all year. But I will tell

(02:32:26):
you that you know, this is a this is gonna
be a hotly contested, hotly contested match, and so you
can watch it on Fox and often. You know onward
and upward that will conclude the Women's World Cup. What
just eight months after the Men's World Cup last December,
And we'll have to wait a few more years, but

(02:32:46):
there's gonna be plenty of news between now and then.
As I truly believe, soccer is working its way into
the mainstream because you can realize and understand and recognize
the names of players and teams, and you start to
understand the significance. For instance, most even casual fans, knew
that the women's team this year was going for a
three peat. It's never been done on the women's side,

(02:33:08):
even on the men's side. Brazil won three to four
fifty six sixty and sixty eight, but they've never won
three in a row, so you start to understand and
get perspective. Coming up, we wrap up the show and
we revisit a story from a few weeks ago that
doesn't necessarily have a happy ending as opposed to the

(02:33:30):
money this gentleman was making after being a successful linebacker
and getting into the collectible's market. He was flying high
in July. But like Frank Sinatra one said, you know, well,
you know the song, I'm Bernie fraddlew comed to live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio, tire Act dot
Com Studios. Keep it locked right here. You listen to

(02:33:51):
the Bernie Fradtle Show on Fox Sports Radio. We're wrapping
it up on the Bernie Frattle Show comedy Live from
the Las Vegas Tire Act dot Com Studios, Fox Sports Radio.
And before I go any further this evening or this morning,
depending on your perspective, I first want to thank my
broadcast team. They've been with me since eleven PM Pacific

(02:34:14):
on Saturday Night. Of course, Mark Ramsey, our technical producer,
turning on all the dials, keeping us glued together. We
had Kevin or Patrick SWEEKA from eleven to midnight Pacific,
and then Ethan jumped in and covered the rest from
noon for check that from midnight to three. And of

(02:34:34):
course let's not forget Kevin Wired on the updates and
special thanks to the chef from South Park for making
his cameo appearance. And I haven't confirmed that the chef
will join the show again in the near future. All right,
I want to revisit a story that I talked about
three weeks ago that I found very interesting, very unique,

(02:34:54):
you know, I can't get enough of those. Mid July,
it was reported that Blake Martinez, next player he'd played
for the Packers. He'd worked his way from a low
draft choice, got on the field, you know, turned into
a very productive player at linebacker, and got himself a
nice contract. Well last year, he made the unusual decision

(02:35:15):
to retire in the middle of a guaranteed multimillion dollar
contract in a nunder two wait for it, pursue selling
Pokemon cards. But interestingly enough, it was reported by very
reputable agencies that is newly founded company what he called
it Blake's Breaks. He was doing so well. He had

(02:35:38):
a full time staff of twenty employees and they were
streaming sixteen hours of live streams per day and in
their first year, and that hadn't been a business in
a full year, and they've done just over eleven million
dollars in revenue. Why how just by distributing and reselling
trading cards on a on a plot form called what Not,

(02:36:01):
which I understand is very popular livestream marketplace. Now, shortly
after I reported this, it came out that there was
a potentially very incriminating picture that was being painted regarding
those sales figures that had been reported. And you know
what transpired was apparently a series of posts on and

(02:36:25):
across Whatnot, not just Whatnot, but various social media platforms
that alleged that Blake's breaks while they were elaborately scamming
their customers. I don't know if any of this is true.
I'm just telling you this is what happened, this is
what was reported. So where am I going with this?
On the heels of this incredibly meteoric rise, someone who

(02:36:45):
had had a very successful NFL career that a'llbe it
a short one, he became this notable Pokemon sports trading
card reseller. All of a sudden, he's going to sing
faster than an villain a bugs Bunny cartoon. Because this company,
Blake's Breaks Again, which is founded and run by former

(02:37:06):
NFL Green Bay Packer linebacker Blake Martinez, he's involved in
his controversy involving a series of accusations from customers and
other card streamers. And I'm not sure one hundred percent
what their complaints are, but they allege that their practices
are rampant and these very scamming techniques, and some of

(02:37:28):
this is, you know, it's pretty salacious, you know, alleging
theft from customer orders, sleight of hand trading, card pack manipulation. Well,
I don't know what's happening here, but maybe where they're
smoked or fire. All I can say is, as of Friday,
August fourth, the streaming platform that just brought up whatnot
concluded their internal investigation and once the result, they removed

(02:37:52):
the Blake's Breaks channel from their platform, as well as
the removal of any individual employees that they believe were
engaged in misconduct. Really weird story from top to bottom.
You go from NFL linebacker you're on top of the world,
the Pokemon dealer on top of the world. Now you're
like Fred Flintstone you just sorded those ribs and they
tipped your car over and you're on the bottom of
the world. It never ends, the crazy stories in sport.

(02:38:15):
That's gonna do it for this week's edition of The
Bernie Frattle Show. Of course, we'll be back on these
airwaves next Friday night at eleven pm Pacific. But in
the meantime, don't go anywhere. Keep it locked right here
