(00:28):
slot almost six years and you've heard me say a
thousand times Sports is the greatest reality show ever, and
you can script everything, but the ending. What happened tonight
in Dallas, I believe warrants an investigation given the level
of incompetence we saw. It's one thing where the Lions
(00:52):
are the recipient of a questionable pass interference call in
a playoff game back in twenty fifteen, which I dismissed
because Matt Stafford turned the ball over twice egregiously, which
wiped that complaint out, but regardless, it was a questionable call.
It's one thing when Don Denkings you're in the nineteen
(01:13):
eighty five World Series between the Royals and the Cardinals,
so badly misses a call at first base that it's
literally talked about for decades, and it's one thing in
twenty ten when Jim Joyce gets the wrong call at
first base, costing Armando Galarraga a no hitter. Those were
(01:36):
judgment calls. Tonight, Saturday Night in Dallas was procedural. In
about fifteen minutes, one of my old buddies, my cronies
from ninety seven to one FM WXYT Detroit, will join us.
Dan Leach, We've got a lot to talk about tonight.
You're going to get the Detroit perspective from Belly the Beast.
(01:56):
So let's set this up ever so quickly, because it's
the story has gotten lost. The Lions were trailing twenty
to thirteen with a minute eighteen to go in the game.
They took over the ball in their own twenty five.
I'm told that Dan Campbell told the team we're gonna
go down, We're gonna score, and we are gonna go
for two. Jared Goff leads the team seventy five yards,
(02:17):
throws a eleven yard touchdown pass to a Monroe Saint Brown,
and true to form, they went for two. Jared Goff
completes a pass to Taylor Decker, who's an offensive lineman,
and this is where the fun begins. The Lions were
flagged for quote illegal touching. It was ruled that Decker
failed to report as an eligible receiver before the play,
(02:40):
so the points were taken off the scoreboard. Round two,
Detroit goes for two again. Cowboys linebacker Michael Parsons draws
an off sidees penalty that erased an interception. My mind,
you that was from the seven yard line. They didn't
put the ball back on the two. It's half to
the distance to the goal. They put it on the
three and a half yard line. Round three, the third
(03:03):
two point attempt failed as Goff's pass to James Mitchell
fell in complete. Love those analytics, man, I love Dan Campbell. Okay,
but you know, back to the old Brandons Daly when
analytics tell you if you do this you got eighty
percent chance to win, you got one hundred percent chance
you'renna lose. I'm so sick of these analytics idiots. But
(03:24):
bottom line is, I'm not second guessing Dan Campbell. It's
not about analytics with him. It's about the culture he
set and the belief in his team after the game,
he was visibly upset, and he should have been. We
wanted to know what happened, he said. The officials told him.
The reason that Decker was ineligible on the successful two
point conversion that ended up being nullfied by a penalty
(03:44):
is quote two players can't report as eligible. This is
where the incompetence begins. According to NFL Rule five, Section three,
Article one, there is no limit to the number of
players who can report as eligible on a given play.
So when asked when Brad Allen was asked why the
(04:04):
illegal touching penalty was called in the first try, he
said Decker didn't report to him. Here's Brad Allen's quote
on this particular play. Number seventy Dan Skipper, who had
reported during the game a couple of times, reported to
me as eligible. Then he lined up with the tackle position,
so actually he didn't have to report at all. Number
(04:26):
sixty eight Taylor Decker, who ended up going downfield and
touching the past, did not report. This is Brad Allen's
quote after the game. So therefore he is an ineligible
touching the pass that goes beyond the line of scrimmage,
which makes it a file. The issue is number seventy
did report, number sixty eight did not. That is a
(04:47):
quote from Brad Allen. Allan also addressed the second flag
thrown on the play quote because number seventy reported as
eligible and he was covered up on the line of scrimmage,
that makes it an illegal formation. So number seventy is
in an illegal position because he has covered up by
rule in number sixty eight catches the pass, which is
(05:08):
also illegal. Again. After Detroit's third two point try came
up short, Ceedee Lamb sealed the win by recovering the
on sidekick game set match. It shouted a historic performance
for Ceedee Lamb, and we'll get to that later. What
are the players saying? Okay, this is going to sting
(05:30):
for a while. The Lions had a chance to win
this game, put themselves in prime position to be the
number two seed. And had they won out beat in
Minnesota next week and the Niners lose one of their
final two games, guess what the Lions would have been
the number one seed. Yap, you heard that right, But
I know that that's a conversation also for another day.
(05:50):
This was the Lions game. Campbell was visibly frustrated by that,
and you know, a lot of conversation went into this game.
I'm s so sick of people saying, Samuel Lions, I
covered this team for a long time. I get it.
The culture is totally different, totally before the season, well
I gotta see, well, you know, they never won anything.
(06:13):
I'm not buying it. I'm not buying it. Now they're
gonna win eleven twelve games. And I was, well, okay,
I gotta win a playoff. Then they'll win a playoff,
and someone will say, oh, I gotta win two playoffs.
If you wanted to see how the Lions stacked up
on the road against one of the NFC's better teams,
turns out pretty well. Despite the loss. They held the
Cowboys below their home scoring average by nearly twenty points.
(06:37):
They took the Cowboys down to the wire in Dallas,
where the Cowboys had won fifteen in a row. There
are no moral victories, there are no good losses. It's
like a good kidney stone. But if you were looking
to see the Lions play on the level of an
NFC contender, or if you were lying in wait to
see them stink it up, and then you get on
the air, this week and say, see, I told you,
(06:59):
like the guy who said it's gonna rain to borrow,
it's gonna rain to borrow. Finally, after seven hundred and
twelve days, it rains. See, I told you the Lion's
hung with the cowboys. They outplayed the cowboys, and not
for nothing. You've heard me bag on Mike McCarthy. He
did it again. When it comes to clock management at
(07:19):
the end of the game. This guy's like the guy
who's wandering them all parking lot, wondering where to hell
I park my car. That's why I used to call
him Barney Rubble. I finally let him off the hook.
He's not Barney Rubble again. Passes three times in a row. Yes,
Detroit did use both of their timeouts, but proper clock management,
the Lions might have only had thirty seconds to go
seventy five yards instead of a minute. In eighteen and
(07:42):
Jared Goff haters, get over yourself, check yourself before you
wreck yourself. I get it. You've probably got Jared Goff
fatigue like I've got Matt Stafford fatigue. I saw too
many times in Detroit where he did some dumb things
that cost his team games while also making brilliant throws.
Matt Stafford will probably be in the Hall of Fame.
He's got the numbers and always got the Super Bowl.
(08:04):
But I can hold two thoughts concurrently, and you should
hold two thoughts concurrently on Jared Goff. I don't care
if you like him. He's getting it done and they
like him in Detroit. What an amazing turn of events tonight,
What an amazing story. It overshadows other story. We're gonna
get to all of it. We've got four hours, trust me,
But sometimes shows right themselves and coming up. You got

(10:43):
ford and your seatbacks up right. Say hello to Dan Leach. Dan,
how you doing, buddy?
Speaker 6 (10:47):
Oh Bertie? What Tonight's a pist?
Speaker 7 (10:49):
It staved off historic collapsing you It's only even happens.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Tonight, right, of course, I bet him. I got him
plus six. We're gonna say that ye for later, Dan,
I want to start out at thirty thousand feet. Let's
tackle the elephant in the room. You remember nine years
ago the Lions were the recipient of a very questionable
PI call in Dallas and during a playoff game. I
(11:15):
know you recall the situation in twenty ten when Andres
Galarraga threw the no hitter. However, those situations were judgment calls.
Tonight was procedural. I believe this warrants an investigation. Let's
start there.
Speaker 7 (11:30):
Your thoughts well at Birdie perstuff. It's great to be
with you. One of my all time shaves and listen
tonight it was one of the craziest nights as not
just a broadcaster but a Detroit threw and through heartfelt
Lions long suffering fan. I can never really imagine it.
And just like you said from thirty thousand seen who
just throw it this way for a second take away?
(11:51):
All the stuff, all the nonsets at the end of
the game, everything there's a Lions fans. Can you blame
the officials? All the different stuff? The bottom line is
the Lions needed to find a way not to let
the referees get involved. Same thing out with the mischie Wolverines.
When JP Barrett, I still believe he was short, but
I didn't blame the refs because the Wolverine needed to
win that game. So that's the thing that comes to
(12:13):
me right away. But I have one hundred percent with
you because I am someone that never wants to blame referees.
They have a tough job, they're human make mistakes.
Speaker 6 (12:20):
You mentioned Jim Joyce.
Speaker 7 (12:21):
Without ors gaw raga, that stupid pedal group PI pick
up call me, but what's going on with conspiracy theories
always happening in Texas? No't just to bring up JFK
and all this stuff happens in Texas.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
What a wacky state.
Speaker 7 (12:33):
But you know, when you look at what happened tonight,
I'm someone like I said, that doesn't want to blame officials.
But when you look at that crew who had that
Kansas City Green Bay game and had that Philadelphia MIAMU
whe they called ten pedalies, I'm Philly or on Miami
and not on Philadelphia. And you have guys like Taylor
Deck or that eminent Leaf Forever captain type guys that are.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
Saying they did it.
Speaker 7 (12:53):
Do a coach said Dan Campbell said before the game,
he talks to the officials, let's know exactly.
Speaker 6 (12:58):
What they're gonna do. And yet if this happens, and.
Speaker 7 (13:01):
Yet it's a regular season game, but it doesn't matter
if it was a preseason game or scrimmage. You can't
these guys work their asses off hearing your outlives. Fans
have had a division title of thirty years and you're
gonna give the Lions a job like that and take
something away that, yeah, they could have not gone for
a fourth down as any time they could have not
(13:22):
at Jerikoff interception. They definitely could have won the game
by not making mistakes. But then when they actually win
the game, you take it away for procedural nonsense that
it seems like this officiating crew completely boxed Perni.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Don't Dad.
Speaker 6 (13:36):
In rare time in my life.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
I'm gonna say it is the officials fault.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Well, Dan, you have to here's why, because the explanation
that Brad Allen gave, he said the reason that Decker
wasn't eligible on the successful two point conversion is because
two players can't report as eligible. But according to the
NFL Rule five, Section three, Article one, there is no
limit to the number of players who can report as eligible.
(14:03):
That's where the investigation starts.
Speaker 6 (14:04):
Dan but Barty and then there's the you know dance.
Speaker 7 (14:08):
Skipper is reported at Elgibra a million times this year,
and by the way, it seems like every time he
does the lines of the big play. The fact that
it's what two plus hours now after the game, and
I still see in my heart of hearts, the depths
of my hearts, and I'm sure fans that are don't
give a crap by the lines and line.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
You know, longtime fans like me still have no clue.
Speaker 7 (14:29):
What happened, because yes, they spoke to the pool reporter,
you mentioned brand Allen's crew, and I mentioned all the
things that they've been associated.
Speaker 6 (14:35):
With just this year alone, and yet they're.
Speaker 7 (14:38):
Saying, okay, Skipper reported, no, he did it, Decker.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
Did he didn't.
Speaker 7 (14:41):
Like this is absolute nonsense, where yes, I understand mistakes
can happen, but if they made a mistake, which are
listening to be sure.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
Dan own up to it, don't.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
They can see like the Lives made a mistake with
Dan Campbell, who would have I love the guy, Yes
he gambles too much sometimes, but he wasn't having any
of it in his press conference. He was pissed off
and he had every right to beat this off because
these guys work their asses off year you know, year round.
We know all long suffering is you know, better than
anybody like I do a long suffering. The fans of
Detroit had been and to have this game statched away
(15:13):
and once again no excuses. The Lives could have won
this thing on their own. But then when they do
with the games, have it snatched away because of this
nonsense seems not just unfair, it seems criminal. And it's
the NFL needs to be better than this. How do
we are we always having these Reugh free controversies. It's
through various teams around the NFL. They need to be
better for an it's just unacceptable.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Talking with Dan Leach, former teammate ninety seven to one
FM in Detroit, one of my favorites as well, Dan,
you brought up a kind of an interesting point, kind
of buried in the middle there. I've liked Dan Campbell
since minute one because I suffered, you know, the years
I covered the Lions. It was Wayne Fonce, Rod Marinelli,
Marty Morning, Who, Matt Millen, you know, right, Bobby Ross,
(15:56):
quick take the Verdie, okay, two thousand and two and
look at you. Yeah, so we're behind all that in
Michigan got stupidity. We've got a real culture here. But
I do Dan, You're still there on the belly of
the beast. I only get into town a couple three
times a year. Now. I've heard there are there are
some people that find some of Dan Campbell's risks off putting.
(16:17):
Can you speak to that?
Speaker 7 (16:19):
Yeah, Bertie, it's such a great question. It's such an
important one. And I've been in every single home game
this year. I've seen what Dan Campbell has had to
do on the good side of the bad sides, and
I've been thinking about this a lot. Of course, Stilling,
I was gonna come up with you and just think
about the Lions in general and Dan Campbell in general.
It's a double edged sword. And the problem is this
the greatest parts of Dan Campbell the reason this team
(16:41):
after thirty years, finally went to the division, and Brat
Holmes is a big part of that as well as GM.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
But all of the things that.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
The measurable success were seeing with the Lions that we
haven't seen forever, or even what you've called long Jim
shorts from succeeds in the playoffs in.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
A couple of years. All of the things that have
happened in.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
The last thirty years since Barry Standards retired to early
it's because the identity Dan Campbell and to the fall,
you know, to a point, Brad Holmes too, have built
for this franchise and part of that is his. And
even Deak Prescott talked about this. You know, Deack coach
is crazy, but I respect it. It's because of Dan
Campbell's you know what and ability to gamble right, so
(17:15):
he do it too much. Absolutely, should he take the
extra point on the second and third try after the penalty,
almost kind of knowing that it was the football guys
to say, listen, Dan, you got to you know, an
outside the pellery, holy penalty, take the extra point, good overtime.
Speaker 6 (17:29):
He doesn't do it.
Speaker 7 (17:30):
But forty of the other side of this is that
without his never say die, believe to the end, to
the ends of the earth for this team, he'll do anything,
biting to the decaps, all that stuff, it wouldn't work
the way it is, So I understand why he's aid it.
Definitely he's over set sometimes and I'll tell you this.
You can live by the sword of dive by the sword.
You can't swallow the sword. And tonight, unfortunately, at the
(17:53):
end of the game, even the life got screwed. I
think Dan Campbell swallowed the sword. And that's so that's
you love him for what he does. And it works
out a lot. They go for a fourth down more
than any team in the NFL. But sometimes you've got
to take your medicine and do the football savvy smart
move and not camble every time.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Well fair enough, but and you bring up a great point,
But think about what you said, because it's that very dynamic,
it's that very persona, it's that very belief in the
culture that you've built that's gotten them that they should
be twelve and four by rights, but they're eleven and five.
I get it. And you know what I talked. I
was texting throughout the night with you know, good NFL
moles I got and he said, low, what I like
(18:30):
what Dan Campbell's doing here because he believes he's got
this team on its backside. One play, two yards and
they get out with a victory rather than having to
go to a full overtime session on the road in
a highly charged crowd, let's get this done now. And
you know what, it worked, and he it was Don Dinkins, Sure,
Jim Joyce, what happened in Dallas Times thirty five because
(18:54):
of the procedural nightmare. So let's talk about this, Dan,
what do you expect the Lions to regroup and their
narrative as they head holding to play in Minnesota in
week eighteen?
Speaker 7 (19:05):
Well, it berty really quickly, and Dan can't believe it.
Said it if you want to hear in the post,
and I'm sure he talked about it. He said, listen,
we're gonna go down too a touchdown and we're going
to we're winning this game. And I like that on
the road at Dallas or seven and all that stuff.
But I think you look at somebody like this, you say, okay,
all right, we definitely made enough mistakes that cost us
the ability to win the game without getting jobs. But
we need to be better and we need to regroup,
(19:26):
and we got a week to you know, get ready
for Minnesota and then we're gonna host our first playoff
game ever at Ford Field. And he talked about this
last week after they finally won the division, and it
was very emotional. It was great to see it as
someone that's been alive to have a whole they covered
the team for decades now, he said, listen, you never
it's never gets old.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
To win a division. It's special, but it's there's way
more work to do.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
And I think the Lions know that its toughest tonight
was they'll have a chance. It's possibly might have a
chance to play Dallas again. Poy with the NFL of that,
I just wanted I brand Allison anywhere near in that game.
Speaker 6 (19:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (19:56):
They better keep them up with security. But you look
at the well, it should be a jail before they
go to that next game. Do you imagine the S'll
set that up as the officiating crew. But you regroup yourself,
you say, listen, we won the division.
Speaker 6 (20:09):
That's not our goal.
Speaker 7 (20:10):
Our goal is to win multiple playoff games to the
lives of the zerrule is here.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
I don't think so.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
But is there a chance? Absolutely, because they're good enough team. Hey,
you've got to come back and get over this and
get ready for Minnesota and get ready for your first
home playoff game and focused on that.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Had they won the night and beaten Minnesota, all they
needed the Niners to do is stumbling one of the
final two games. Number one seed. It looks like final
question on this subject. Looks like they're going to be
pretty well locked into the number three seed. They'll get
one home game at least, and depending on what happened
Sunday between Seattle and their game at home and the Rams,
(20:43):
when they head to the New York Giants, you could
be seeing Matt Stafford come to town. Might have to
shut down the city for three days. How divided might
the crowd be? I know they'll be roody for the Lions,
but still a lot of sentimentality for Matt Stafford.
Speaker 7 (20:56):
Yes, speaking of things the NFL would love, Bertie, would
they love that Buddy Special playoff game to be Stafford
coming back? That Jared Goff Stafford revenge game? How many
storylines would that thing have?
Speaker 6 (21:07):
Listen?
Speaker 7 (21:08):
You know I've said this, you know, many times in
my years on the ticket and and a lot of
different shows I've done. I was a huge Stafford opponent.
There was a lot of media members and fans in
this town that blave Stafford for everything. To give any credit,
it was not Stafford's fault and he made mistake. Shirt
Stafford was incredible here and it's one of those things
where it.
Speaker 6 (21:24):
Just did work out.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
And I was I'm here the night he got traded.
Never forget it, and I said, listen, it's the right
thing to do. Jared Goff could end up being a
great quarterback. I got it, Tutors. The next guy could
had to being traded, cut, whatever it was. And it's
obviously worked out pretty well so far for both teams.
And Stafford got a super Bowl and he deserved it.
And that's the thing he will not get food. But
that the just the electricity, the anxiousness, the feeling in
(21:46):
that building, which has been as loud as it's ever
been all season long, would just be an another decipeled
time some one thousand Bernie if to play the Lions
in a playoffs gave at fort Field the first ever
after the first division title of thirty years.
Speaker 6 (22:03):
I've won it so badly, but I'm also terrified of it.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Yeah, Dan hold that thought. Coming up after Kevin's update,
We're gonna switch gears talk about the college football Playoff Mike,
Michigan have a shot a legitimate shot at their first
well in the playoff era national championship and by the way,
I could just envision it now. Match Stafford comes to town,
(22:27):
throws three touchdown passes, better throw a pick six in
the first quarter of the Lions to win. All Right,
I'm digressed. Let's go to our guy, Kevin Wire at
the chef with the latest.
Speaker 8 (22:36):
Yeah, Bernie, of course everyone tonight talking about that controversial
ending in Dallas. The Cowboys ended up being the Lions
twenty to nineteen after Detroit failed to complete a pass
on a two point conversion attempt, but with twenty three
seconds ago, the Lions up here to take the lead
on a two point conversion as Taylor Decker caught a
(22:56):
pass in the end zone. However, referee brought ill and
claim that Decker did not report as eligible.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Gough works out of the gun. There's the snap back,
looks gross.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
Right down, govin raw, He's not the five doves at
the end zone?
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Did het get in?
Speaker 5 (23:12):
Yes, sir, touchdown to Troy Lyons. Oh Babby.
Speaker 9 (23:16):
What a drive by the Lions.
Speaker 10 (23:17):
Wow, and they're holding up to two. Dan offense is
staying on the field. They're going for the win with
twenty three seconds to go. Wow, twenty three seconds to play.
Down by one, They'll go for two. Jared Goff moves
in behind center. Single back behind him is Montgomery. Gough
takes turns fakes to give the Montgomery sets to the pocket,
throws enzone wide open.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
It is Cough Taylor Decker two points.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
Oh my goodness, are you kiddy me?
Speaker 5 (23:44):
Pat Johnson? Pat Johnson, Pat Johnson? Oh Babby? The Lions
have to lieve what a play? What's the go?
Speaker 1 (23:53):
They're well, they saying Skipper didn't report. What was the call?
Illegal touching? So illegal touching the call.
Speaker 8 (24:00):
And that's because the official, Brad Allen, thought that it
was Dan Skipper, another lineman who had reported as eligible,
so he called out number seventy instead of number sixty eight,
so illegal touching was called. Bob Mart's back a few yards.
The Lions would then appear to throw an interception on
that two point conversion. However, an off sides call negated
that they would have one more chance, and the pass
(24:23):
fell incomplete from Jared Goff as the Lions fall to
the Cowboys twenty to nineteen. But man, you got to
imagine Detroit fans everywhere stewing it tonight in the NBA,
the big story of the night mercifully over in Detroit.
So some good news at least for the folks up
in Michigan as the Pistons do end their twenty eight
game losing streak. They beat the Raptors one twenty nine
(24:44):
to one twenty seven. A little bit of controversy in
the Lakers Timberwolves game, as it's Minnesota winning at one
eight one oh six, but Lebron James made a late
basket for LA, but it was ruled a two pointer
a three would have tied the game, and Lebron James
insisting it was three and didn't get his way there.
So Minnesota ends up winning it there call it hoops
(25:06):
number seven. Florida Atlantic upset by Florida Gulf Coast seventy
two to sixty eight. Back to you, Bernie, all.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Right, thanks chef. Let's go back to our guy, Dan Leach,
one of the great teammates over ninety seven one the ticket,
the lot, the Detroit Flagship blowtorch, Dan Let's shift gears
two fifteen Pacific, five fifteen Eastern on Monday. Nick Saban,
who's a nemesis? I think, I personally think Michigan's in trouble.
(25:36):
But let's get your thoughts. You're there in the belly
of the beast in Detroit.
Speaker 7 (25:40):
Yeah, I'll tell you this, Bernie is brutals Tonight was
obviously not gonna line same my whole life.
Speaker 6 (25:44):
I'm just as big as.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
A Wolverine fan in every game for years and seemed
to get to my family for seven years. And it
really has been something to watch this program. After I
called for Jim Harbaugh's job a few years before, they
you know, go before the Beatle House State finally and
he turned.
Speaker 6 (25:59):
It around and I was wrong. I'm glad I was wrong.
Speaker 7 (26:01):
And the problem is, though Michigan can't win the Semis.
I mean, this is a team, Bernie, that has more
losses in the playoffs that they do in the regular season.
Speaker 6 (26:11):
In Big Ten championship.
Speaker 7 (26:12):
Games, they are thirty eight and one in the last
few years and they're owed two and the Sevis. And
you look at what this team has been And obviously
I thought that the Wolverine fans that were saying, oh
they got screwgs, they have to play Alabama, they should
have played Florida State. We all saw with having to
Florida State with all the opt outs today and hopefully
that'll be fixed with this twelve team playoffs. But it's
a Wolverine team, Bernie, that is really special. And I
(26:34):
was talking with a good friend that I think you
know as well. Angelie changellis the beat writer, longtime beat
writer for the Wolverine for the Detroit News. I had
her on my show the other day and she has
covered this team up and down for a long time
and said this is probably easily the most fun team
she's ever seen, the team that liked each other the most,
and the team that believes in themselves the most.
Speaker 6 (26:54):
Of they had body, They're.
Speaker 7 (26:55):
Head coach was taking the lines with Dan Campbell, who
talked about their body Jim Harbaugh, and they went through
all the craziness of this year with the Connor.
Speaker 6 (27:03):
Stallion, spy Kate and then you know nonsense and you.
Speaker 7 (27:06):
Know coaches, He's extended from the Burger situation or the
line to the investigator situation earlier this year.
Speaker 6 (27:12):
They've won many games.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
Without Jim Harbour on the sidelines as they have.
Speaker 6 (27:15):
With Jim Harbour on the sidelines. As far as the
regular season.
Speaker 7 (27:17):
Goes, and you look at what they've got in this
Nick shab And led to Alabama team, and if they
don't have that crazy Jalen moan Roe fourth and go,
you know, goal forever against Auburn. We're not even talking
about this game. But to me, Bertie, I look at
like this. This is the feeling I kind of get here,
other than the anxiety which you of course after. You're
a Michigan fans. I think Michigan's a better team than Alabama.
Speaker 6 (27:36):
That's not the helbum.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
But let me ask the question Dan. The last four
games when they played legit teams like Penn State, Ohio State,
and Iowa, there are two scoring drives against Siawa were
five yards and six yards. They were out gained, they
hit you know what, took a long point return the
stettle for field goals. It could not run the ball.
But I want to back up, I do want to
give Michigan credit. This is an incredibly likable group JJ
(27:59):
McCarthy what Blake Koram does a Thanksgiving and they deserve
to be where they are at. I just feel they're
they're in faster company. And if they can't run the
ball and they're gonna have difficulty covering Bama's speedy receivers,
let me just ask you this Dan two questions, which
team does this Alabama team resemble most of anybody Michigan's
(28:20):
played this year? And what's your biggest concern Michigan has
to do this you fill in the blank or they're
going to be in trouble.
Speaker 7 (28:26):
Well, you know it's it's tough because I mean, michisten,
Let's be honest and we know this. I saw this
up close to personal the semi against Georgia of the Origibowl.
The size of the athletes in the SEC George Alabama
is just another level.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
I don't think Michigan.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
Has I mean Pat State tellent wise on defense media
that was on the road, But I mean the buck
guys are a team with a quarterback and Knle mccorton
just wasn't that good. Kalen and Roe is really really good.
Not only cod he throw, the guy can run. So
I don't know if there's only a team on the
Michigan schedule you know that really compares to as good overalls?
Speaker 6 (28:59):
Down? Is this that to the point that I was making.
Speaker 7 (29:01):
I'm not trying to say that I think that the
Wolverines are this way better team than the Albama Crimson
Tide are I just look at what Michigan has gone through, what.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
They've done to the bad teams, what they.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
Did to the You know, one of the best events
in the country at Penn State, Rutgers is allowing no
rushing yards and you know the Wolverin's ran from a
Twitter plus on them. So listen, It's not like the
Wolverines are this knockout, dragout historic Clemson Deshaan Watson babbit
type team from four or five years ago. But what
they are, Bernie, is there a team that really rarely
(29:31):
is behind. They have a great defense, guys like Mike
Santa stro why.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Of off the field like if Charles Winston.
Speaker 7 (29:37):
Was back in ninety seven. Ernie, They've got a quarterback
at JJ McCarthy and it's gonna be a great NFL
pro does not make mistakes that often, a two headed boss,
I don't doubt if it ever doesn't good as a
late But you look at you to know how State
game last year and Blake Corum, and you've got a
guy out. Give you a couple ex actors. Colstond Love
with the tight end, this is the guy that could
be a massive factor in this game.
Speaker 6 (29:57):
I'll give you another doget for you.
Speaker 7 (29:59):
When you look at the Wolverines, they're the least penalized
team in the country.
Speaker 6 (30:04):
Point three pedal yards in.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
The country too, they don't.
Speaker 7 (30:09):
Yeah, threads still batter, but the Crimson Tier eight and
twenty it gets the spread. I gets teams that average
less than forty two peddal yards, so that's something to know.
Is a two point spread, so it's basically even spread.
So to me, it's about can Michigan come out and
punch the Crimson tide in the mouth, be in the
lead and not be a team that has to chase
or do something stupid like they're that first drive against
(30:30):
TCU last year. And to me, I think if Michigan
played their game where you played against Ohio State or
pat State of the Roader pretty much most of their
games this year.
Speaker 6 (30:37):
And I get what you're saying about Iowa, but if
they could do that.
Speaker 7 (30:39):
This is a Wolverine team that I think can beat Alabama,
not by a ton, but because they are complete to
me overall, just a little bit better at their best
that Bama is. If Bama's got a ton of talent,
they've got a ton of specimens, and it's Vick stated
with twenty eight what days to prepare? That's something that
should scare every Michigan fan.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Fair enough, Dan, you know we just got a couple
of minutes. But listen, I got a text at nine
thirty one tonight that Jim Harbaugh has had an agent, Donyie.
He also represents Tom Brady and Sean Payton. Now I've
got some pretty good moles. I know that Harball has
a man crush on Justin Herbert. Now we don't know
(31:21):
if he'd get to control. We don't know if he'd
get his you know, fifteen million a year. I'm not
making any predictions. I'm merely saying I believe it's a
seventy percent chance at the start of the line that
Harball will we'll go back to the NFL. Your thoughts
stand from an objective standpoint, not just a guy who
and I respect the fact that you you beled Michigan
blue and you're a true blue. Detrotion said of a
(31:42):
thousand years, Detroit a best sports town in America, four
great teams, two Big ten teams around the corner. So
be as objective as you can and give me your thoughts.
Speaker 7 (31:53):
Yeah, you have the best balls by the way that
it's just done on your face or body, which is great.
And for me, listen, I do believe he's in blue.
But I mean, I can't do my job right if
I'm not objective. And I've had to do many Michigan
pre and post games and all that kind of stuff.
So as big of a fan as I am, I
have to take that head off when I'm talking about.
Speaker 6 (32:08):
Something like this.
Speaker 7 (32:09):
And to me, you know, this is where I'm at
with Harball and to guess obviously brought up seeming Lee
every time this time of year. I think the NFL
obviously is his last bash. It's his dream. He was
what yards away five yards away with Kaepernick and that
lights go out in the Supernome Super Bowl to winning
a Super Bowl, And obviously that's like Nick Shaban wanted
to do it.
Speaker 6 (32:25):
Many coaches have wanted to do it.
Speaker 7 (32:27):
But I think that Jim Harbaugh is best student for
the college games, especially with nil the way that Michigan
has the biggest alumni and one of the biggest and
damits all that stuff.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
And I'm not saying the NFL was done with him,
but he brought up a really good point.
Speaker 7 (32:38):
He is a guy that wants full control, and what
NFL team after how he kind of wears out his
welcome and is kind of a little wacky to deal with.
Sometimes he's going to give him full control. The NFL
is a different specimen. It's not the way where you
run a program where crew to have an assistance to
all that kind of stuff. It's it's basically you've got
a general manager like Bradhold's here at Detroit and a
coach of Dan Campbell. Yet today worked in kind sort
(33:00):
of course, but hard Ball's gonna want to run the
whole thing, and I just don't see an NFL team.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
You may well be right to do that. You may
well be right, but I will just say this. He
never got over losing the Super Bowl to his brother.
He just turned sixty. This is gonna be his last dance.
If he doesn't go to the NFL now, I can't imagine.
And I know the stars didn't align two years ago
when he wanted to go to Minnesota. They didn't want him.
Last year, I think Denver would have hired him. He
didn't want to go there. He knew he had forty
four seniors coming back. Anyway, Dan, we're gonna have you
(33:27):
on again a lot. Appreciate you bringing the energy from
Detroit as you always do. Final thoughts about the Pistons
tonight winning and avoiding the twenty nine straight loss.
Speaker 6 (33:39):
The long national night there is over. Let me just
say this.
Speaker 7 (33:44):
Obviously it's having a long time stand, cover titles, all
that stuff, bad boys going to work. This has been
really tough to stomach. But I want to say one
thing about Kate Cunningham. It ain't his fault. That guy
has been for several days now. I think Detroit or
the fansaire lucky.
Speaker 11 (34:00):
To have him.
Speaker 7 (34:00):
The Pistons have become a joke, but just I want
to give it take a hat off to him and
Body Williams talking about the locker room and said it
was one of the most important nights of his life.
It was adulation, it was exultation, it was all that stuff,
and say, god, they still have the all type record.
Speaker 6 (34:13):
They tied it.
Speaker 7 (34:13):
But the Rows by themselves and Kate Cunningham is the
reason they got so close to get to Boston.
Speaker 6 (34:18):
Obviously, it's a very tough to be proud e.
Speaker 7 (34:19):
To close to the Pistons for a long time now,
but at least the last several games try to stave
off this historics awful record. Kay Cunningham and some of
the other guys have played their hearts out. That's that's
Pistons basketball. That reminds me a little of the great
times here and hopefully we get back to that at
some point.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
Good to see money Williams earning his money. Dan, I'll
leave you with this thought, Uh, if Michigan beats Alabama Monday,
let's get you back on next week and forty eight
hours before the National Championship game.
Speaker 7 (34:48):
If you're up for it, well I'm not only up
for it, but I'll be at houstive.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
So let's make that happen.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Over my friend. Oh that's called you know. I love it, Dan,
Dan great stuff has always got I bless your happy
New Year. Hopefully we'll be talking to you next Saturday night. Again,
Michigan playing in the National Championship. That's what you want.
So there you have it, Dan, great stuff. Thanks buddy.
Speaker 7 (35:11):
Hey, nothing of but the best helping out it as
a twenty twenty four to you and all.
Speaker 6 (35:14):
Your great listeners.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Thanks Dan. It's Dan Leech ninety seven to one Detroit
former teammate. You hear the Passion. Coming up, we're gonna
have a special guest, Joe Gibbs, our NFL ref stats guy.
You've heard him on my show many times. He texted
me before the show tonight and talked about a very
interesting stat with Brad Allen when the Cowboys are at home. Now,
I'm not casting guineas persions. I'm not implying anything, so
(35:35):
don't start allowing your mind to wander. But numbers are numbers,
and Joe's great with numbers, so he'll bring you. He'll
bring us behind the curtain. And you know, it's like
an umpire who umpires a lot of games, and a
lot of those games seem to go under in baseball
or refs and Scott Foster. But you know the whole deal.
We're just doing sports talk radio here. We're not solving
(35:55):
the worldt problems. Coming up, I want to read a
couple of tweets and I want to set the record
straight because somebody thinks I miss quoted Brat Allen. And
I'm gonna most assuredly tell this, gentlemen, I'm not in
a respectful way. I appreciate people engaging with the show.
We don't have to agree all right. Two people agree
all the time. Only what Head's doing all the thinking
football fans. Be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio
(36:16):
every Sunday morning, beginning at ten am Eastern seventy m
Pacific for Contown to Kickoff, presented by bet MGM, Brian No,
Jeff Schwartz, my buddy Bill Krackenberger, Professional Better He's on
my show Friday night. They got you covered three hours
before kickoff. Every Sunday morning, listen to Countown to Kickoff,
presented by bet MGM. Right here on Fox Sports Radio
and the iHeartRadio app. I'm Bernie Fraddle. Were coming to
(36:37):
your live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tireck dot
Com studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie
Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Right back on the Bernie
Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to live from the
Tireck dot Com studios. The conversation continues, and I want
to set the record straight. First of all, if you
take the time to listen to my show, thank you.
You take the time to tweet at me because we
(36:57):
have a disagreement, I thank you or that as well.
We don't have to agree, but I'm gonna set the
record straight. When I come, I come correct. I had
a couple of tweets from a gentleman whose Twitter handle
is Zombie rubber Ducky. He says the rest never claimed.
Two players can't report Dan Campbell spelled wrong by the
(37:18):
way Campbell is spelled c A MP B E L
said that, and you reported it if the refs said it.
I think the refs are awful, but I blame the
team for blah blah blah. Appreciate you, buddy, I do.
I so this make you know. I may come off
as sounding harsh in my tone. And you just had
to heard of the guests from Detroit. He's ry passion
who still works in that market. If you heard my
(37:39):
opening monologue, mister zombie, I want to set the record straight.
Now this has also been confirmed. I just confirmed it
was reported by the Athletic, a very reputable organization. You
don't believe me, you can reference it yourself. Here is
what it says in the Athletic quote. Lions coach Dan
Campbell said in the postgame news conference that the officials
told him. Officials told him that the reason Decker wasn't
(38:03):
eligible on the two point conversion that was nullified by
the penalty is that two players can't report as eligible.
Campbell may have said that in the post Graham game conference,
but the context is the referees told him, and I
corrected and said, according to rule number five, Section three,
Article one, there is no limit to the number of plays.
(38:25):
Brad Allen went on to give many quotes which you
can also find in the Athletic I want to give
these folks great credit, Colton Ponce, John Mashada, sad Yusef
for their excellent intrepid reporting. There are plenty of brad
Allen's quotes in here. He was the referee and coming
(38:45):
up at the top of the hour, we're going to
have a gentleman Joe Gibbs NFL refstats having to do
with the data he has on Brad Allen when he
is the referee on home games in Dallas and cast expersions. No,
we're just reporting facts. You can draw your own conclusions
(39:05):
because this is a procedural thing and it's been spelled out.
It's in print for reputable you know publications. Mister Zombie,
there should be no confusion as to who said what
and who applied what I said that this was a
situation that might warrant an investigation simply because that this
(39:26):
was procedural and not a judgment call like a PI
or a close play at first base. I also don't
have a rooting interest. Did I work in Detroit for
seventeen fourteen years, Yes, I did. Did I cover the
lines for ten years? Yes? Do I know people that
are still there, passionate or that I wanted to get
their thoughts? Yes? Don't tell me what you think you
think what I wanted to happen. I'm reporting what did
(39:48):
happen in the meantime after all that diet drop. Thanks
for listening and thanks for checking in. Sports talk radio
works best if we have varying opinions coming up. Joe Gibbs,
NFL Rep staffs, we're gonna put a final caper on
this and he'll tell you from the bat Brad Allen
perspective what his past history has been in Dallas. Keep
it locked. This is Bernie Fraddle and you're listening to
the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

The away tied buying should be. Before I get to
(40:46):
my guest, Joe Gibbs, I want to read a tweet
from Richard Bag one week ago. I questioned some of
Brad Allen's calls during the Browns versus Texans game in
the first quarter. The calls were one sided and he
couldn't do it any more without being caught. Is the
first time I've recognized is blatant mishonesty. Appreciate your tweet.
I won't go there, Joe. I will say this though,
(41:07):
that this has brought out a lot of highly charged
opinions and thoughts. But I want to talk to you, Joe.
I probably should. We've been overdue to have you on.
You've been on going to show many times before. You
keep amazing stats and data on referee performances versus home
and away and versus certain teams. And you sent me
a text earlier today talking about what Brad Allen's past
(41:30):
has been in Dallas. So without further ado, Joe, please
share that with the audience.
Speaker 6 (41:35):
Hey, Bernie, how you doing tonight?
Speaker 2 (41:37):
I'm doing I'm doing pretty good, Joe. And not much happening. No,
pretty pretty.
Speaker 11 (41:44):
I'll talk you later on. Yeah, I mean, I put
some stuff out on my Twitter account earlier. He's Brown's
always been a good home field referee, so this is
nothing new, and I just pulled some stuff up here
when I got home. This is going back to twenty sixteen.
Mean home teams of the games actually slightly of a
(42:04):
fifty nine percent of the games that he officiates. This
is going back to twenty sixteen, and maybe that doesn't
sound like a lot, but that's actually well above NFL average.
So straight up, the Batti's he's just a good home
field referee. Home home teams are nine and six this
season with him, and then against the spread there fifty
seven percent, which is extremely good. So just he's just
(42:24):
a good home field referee. Dallas themselves like, just straight
up with Brad Allen, there's no overwhelming evidence, like just
straight up on that stuff with that particular team. I mean,
they'd won games with him at home obviously.
Speaker 6 (42:38):
But he's done a.
Speaker 11 (42:40):
Few games this season in primetime and I was talking
to you about this earlier. Three Actually tonight was the third,
but the first one was Philadelphia versus Miami, and he
called ten penalties on Miami the road team, zero on
the home team Philadelphia. They got away with three or
four obvious penalties on that game. And then we go back,
i'd say, probably what three or four weeks ago, the
(43:03):
Chiefs at the Packers on Sunday Night Football and there
was the no defensive Coast in appearance on Green Bay
late in the game, which kind of sealed the deal
for them. And then we get to to not and
then you kind of saw what happened at the end
would be two point conversion. So this is kind of
part of the course when he does these games, and
I didn't expect it to happen like this tonight.
Speaker 6 (43:24):
This was way over the top, but it did.
Speaker 12 (43:27):
Well.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
Go ahead, Joe, yeah, yeah, go ahead. Burn Well, what
I wanted to say was what really rankles me, and
I want to make this abundantly clear to people who
selectively listen. I didn't have a rooting interest tonight. I
don't want anybody attempting to imply what they think I
wish would have happened. So I'm creating my own narrative. No,
(43:51):
which leads to the question. I want to ask you, Joe,
because this blunder tonight to me appeared to be procedural.
Because after the game, Dan Campbell told the media that
Brad Allen told him multiple players can't check in when
it's clearly listed in the rules that they can. And
(44:12):
I read the rule and it's not been reported in
the athletic So, Joe, this isn't just a PI call
that looked egregious, or an offsides call that looked obvious,
or perhaps a holding call that was questionable. This is procedural.
This is something we've never talked about, Joe, and all
your great data that you put together were regarding the refs.
I'd like to get your professional opinion on this type
(44:35):
of a mistake, this type of a boner when you
have a situation where it involves actual procedure.
Speaker 11 (44:41):
Right, well, I mean obviously it goes that thing to
screw up my issue on this stuff, whether it's procedural
or it's a judgment I think and Belichick's Bill Belichick's
mentioned this, there should be some sort of challenge and
or review review system because this stuff is getting way
out of hand, and obviously with the betting becoming so
(45:02):
you know, the proliferation of betting, it's just creating all
these problems that are being magnetized.
Speaker 6 (45:08):
So I don't know, I mean.
Speaker 11 (45:09):
You know, whether it's procedural or it's a judgment call,
at the end of the day, it's still the same result.
I just think there needs to be some sort of
challenge end.
Speaker 6 (45:17):
Or review system.
Speaker 11 (45:19):
I don't know exactly how they do it, but you're
gonna have to because this is happening all too often.
And yeah, like somehow the forty nine of lows tomorrow,
which you know, I think that will but you know,
you don't know, and so this could potentially cross the
lines the number one overall season.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
True. No, these are these these are these are real things.
So Joe, appreciate you joining us tonight on the fly.
Speaker 7 (45:42):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
I want to get you back in a couple of
weeks as we head into what should be a great
tournament playoff field, and uh, you'll bring your insights in
some of the matchups that are starting to come clear
as we are basically now two weeks away from the
NFL playoffs. So Joe, thanks for checking in on notice.
Any any final thoughts on this what happened to night
in Dallas?
Speaker 11 (46:04):
Well, I think you pretty much covered it.
Speaker 6 (46:05):
Yeah, it was a screw up, but I mean, yeah,
I mean I'm kind.
Speaker 11 (46:10):
Of lost for words on the whole thing. But like
I said, I think a challenge and or review system
that's got to be implemented in the off season in
some way, shape or form.
Speaker 2 (46:18):
Now, when you say review system, review penalty calls is
what you're talking about, right, Is that what you're expliciting
talking about reviewing penalties?
Speaker 6 (46:26):
Correct?
Speaker 2 (46:26):
Our coaches can challenge penalties type of thing.
Speaker 6 (46:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (46:29):
Bill Bolchik's mentioned this a few times.
Speaker 6 (46:31):
This stuff should be challengeable.
Speaker 11 (46:34):
How they would actually go about reviewing it? Again, this
is beyond my pay grade, but yeah, there's got to
be something because he can challenge like a fumble or
guy's foot was out of bounds or you know everything.
Yet we can't challenge penalties, which have just as much
impact on the game.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Perhaps more in some cases.
Speaker 11 (46:51):
Than you know. A guy stepping out.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
Of bounds Joel, great stuff gets to rest, my man.
Good luck with your wagers on. We'll talk to you
again shortly.
Speaker 6 (47:01):
Okay, thanks Ernie.

(47:24):
from sports que boy, A lot of smoke still around
Michigan to the cynics, it looks like Harball wants to
catch the first thing smoke it out of ann arbor
to avoid further possible investigation. Well, you might have other
motives as well. Perfect segue into what I want to
dive into next. What's happening with Jim Harball. Let's take
you back a couple of weeks, and then the text
(47:46):
I got tonight at nine thirty one at pm Pacific time.
By the way, we haven't forgot. We got a hell
of a slate on the NFL for a week seventeen.
A lot of implications, playoff implications, steady implications. One am
Pacific four in Eastern we dive heavily into full blowing
NFL analysis. I'm also gonna have some thoughts on that
(48:06):
debacle between Florida State today and Georgia. You can say
what you want. If Florida Stated would have their full
complement of players, let's say that's worth fifty points, they
still would have lost by ten. I've just disappointed the
way that went down today, and we'll have some thoughts
later on in the hour. But coming up, Jim Harbaugh
(48:26):
is weighing some decisions, and it looks like he's already
made one, and I'll share with you what that is.
Draw your own conclusions. I've drawn mine. I'm Bernie Frattle.
Were coming to life from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio,
tirect dot Com Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Boy, Ain't
that the truth? Mama did say there would be days
(48:46):
like this, and I'm guessing there are people out there
that are happy this happened. To the lines and that's
why they're so active on Twitter. And that's okay too.
I'm here for it. Baby. The opposite of love is
not hated, its indifference. I'd rather have people engaged and involved.
So what makes the sports school the sports world go around?
You know, this is the toy department. Man, We're not
trying to solve the world's problems here. You don't go
(49:09):
into the toy department and start talking politics. I am
Bernie Fraddle come to you live from Las Vegas, Fox
Sports Radio, Tirack dot Com Studios. We'll take you up
to three am Pacific, six am Eastern. We have a
lot of stuff to get to. We will have a
full NFL breakdown of course at two am Pacific, the
dance Sensation sweep of the nation. What kind of brand
(49:30):
new fool are you? Followed by what my name? And oh,
by the way, just as a programming note, I would
be back on these airwaves New Year's Eve, eleven pm Pacific,
two am Eastern. Plenty of high jinks with my same crew,
Mark Ramsey, Patrick Sweek or actually I guess Shay will
be with us. Patrick. Are you with a Sunday night? No,
(49:51):
that's gonna be shay, Okay, Well, you enjoy your you
enjoy your New Year's Eve. You've done a hell of
a job for my show these past few months, and
I appreciate everything done, as well as Mark and certainly
the chef Kevin Wired on the updates. Of course, don't
forget the chef will be performing in at one thirty.
You don't want to you don't want to miss that
one thirty am Pacific. But amidst it all, I got
(50:13):
to say, you Detroit much as be the Michigan might
be the epicenter of the sports universe with the Lion game,
what happened Saturday night and the Pistons you know who,
finally winning after losing twenty eight games in a row
so they don't set the NBA record, Michigan gearing up
to play Alabama on Monday for the national you know,
for the right to play in the National Championship. And
(50:33):
then I got a text about nine thirty one pm
Pacific that Jim Harbaugh's hired an agent, Don Yee, very
powerful edge and he represents Tom Brady, he represents Sean Payton.
Am I making any of the predictions where I think
Jim Harbaugh is going to be next year. No, I'm
just telling you. I think it's seventy percent he'll be
in the NFL. If I was making a prediction, i'd
say it's one hundred percent. No, it's I'm gonna say
(50:54):
it's seventy percent. You have to understand that when Jim
Harbaugh lost to his brother in the Super Bowl ten
years ago, he never got over it. I don't care
what anybody says. It's a fact. He was incredibly close
to leaving the Niners and signing with the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins are owned by Ross Steve Ross, a benefactor
(51:18):
to the University of Michigan to the tune of about
one hundred million dollars. And it's my understanding you right
before that happened, the Michigan faithful got ahold of him
and said, if you hired Jim Harball, we will disown you.
Harball wanted out of San Francisco. He was fighting with
the front office. I don't have time to tell that
whole story. Michigan was wanting to get him back. They
were they were fully coalesced alumni, coaches, fans, players, you
(51:43):
name it, boosters, and and and you knew what was
gonna happen because at the time owner Steve Ross, the
Dolphins didn't fire Joe Filben, he kept him, and so
by that was like, there's your sign. So Ball went
back to Michigan and listen, he's rebuilt the program. He's
(52:04):
made the program of fortune. I wrote him like a
rented mule for the first five years because he was
hired to beat Ohio State, win the Big Ten, and
go to the National Championship. Couldn't do it. But he's
done at the last three. So you got to give
him his flowers. Now two years ago after his diet
tribe with his boss, Ward Manual, the athletic director of Michigan.
(52:24):
They have a personal relationship too. They both played together
for both sham Becker and on the Michigan football team
in the eighties. Remember word Manual cut his pay after
the COVID thing, and one thing led to another, and
Harbaugh didn't like that, and even when they restored it,
I think he was upset. So in January of twenty
twenty two, on signing day, Jim Harbaugh flew to Minnesota
(52:45):
interview with the Vikings. That was a courtesy interview arranged
by a queasy Adolpha Mensa who had worked together with
at the forty nine ers. The Wolfs owned the Minnesota Vikings.
They were never going to hire Harball. They weren't interested,
and they were going to do it in one day.
It was a different Ball got off the plane thought
he was going to be hired or maybe allegedly and
he wasn't. Okay, But at that point, Harball I think
(53:06):
would have gone to the NFL. I really believe it.
Stars were aligned. Fast forward to January twenty twenty three.
I think the Denver Broncos were very interested in Jim
Harball now he knew that he had forty four seniors
coming back on his Michigan team. JJ McCarthy was an
absolute stellar individual and a very good quarterback. Will be
a high draft choice in the NFL. Blake Krum stellar individual,
(53:28):
brilliant running back. Michigan's got a top rated defense. Have
they really been tested this year? We're going to find
out they got at Balabama. But what's interesting is the
cloud that's been looming over the program for a while now.
Several weeks ago, it was reported that Jim Harball had
an extension of eleven million per year times five years
(53:49):
fifty five man sitting on his desk. But it had
a clus that you can't go to the NFL, you
can't flirt with the NFL. Harball never signed that. And
by the way, not for nothing. Jim Harball's buyout is
two point two million. Well, why would he have such
a low buyout if he didn't want to keep his
options open. Jim jimmil Fisher had a seventy six million
(54:09):
dollar buyout. You heard my report the other night on
the Ben Mallor Show when I talked about all these
coaches who got fired but because of their buyouts, they
went away with the lottery. Tom Allen and Indiana went
away with almost sixteen million. Houston's Dana Horgenson he got
fourteen point eight million, Mississippi State Zach Arnett four point
five million. Right on down the line, they all get
(54:32):
big buyouts. Hardball negotiated a very low buyout. You know,
why make it easier to go to the NFL. Now
Michigan has up the ante. They have now offered a
one hundred and twenty five million dollar contract extension that
carries no NFL clause per reports, and Harbaugh, as you know,
(54:56):
is corded NFL teams recently in the last few year,
and now he has this incredible, massive offer and he
hasn't signed it. It would make him the highest paid
coach in college football. And the bottom line is this
what's stopping him from signing it. He could have signed
it a week ago. Why didn't he? So I want
(55:21):
to make this clear, Okay, I want to be accurate.
On the show, I said it had a new NFL
clause after the first year. It has In the NFL clause,
the clause limiting NFL interests would only last one season, okay,
because Michigan believes that's been the thing that's preventing the
two sides from reaching an agreement. So this current contract
proposal ten years, one hundred and twenty five million. That's
(55:44):
ten million dollars more than the Dabbos Swinney contract he
got as the biggest college football contract in history Nick Saban,
he clears eleven point four million. He was the highest
code paid coach heading into this year unless Harbaugh signs
that contract. So those are the facts. Jim Harbaugh has
been offered ten years, one hundred and twenty five land.
(56:05):
There is a limit clause in the NFL for one year,
then after that he's a free man. If he decides
to go, he hasn't signed it. Why wouldn't you sign
that unless you have designs on wanted to stay in
ann Arbor? Why would you hire an agent Donie such
a powerful agent. I know the Chargers are interested. Dan
each brought up a good point. Can they come to terms? Hell,
(56:28):
no one knows, Not even God knows. Because I think
Harball will bring demands and I get it. Do I
think he could get interest from the Raiders maybe, although
I think the Raider should hire Antonio Pierce. Could he
go to the Bears? At one time I thought that
because the mccaskeys treated Harball like a son. But with
Kevin Warren, the president of the Bears, the former Big
(56:48):
Ten commissioner, well, let's put it this way. I don't
know that those two would get along. But stranger things
have happened, right, I don't Nothing surprises me in sports anymore.
Bob Buker wants hit a home run off, Sandy Kofak,
Billy Martin and George Steinbrender got divorced to be married
three or four times. Anything can happen in the world
with sports. I've told you, I said at a thousand times.
(57:09):
Sports are the greatest reality show. You can script everything
but the final outcome, everything but the ending. Now, let's
give Harbaugh some credit. He has transferred Michigan to a
national power in his nine year tenure. The Wolverines went
eight years without a top ten finish before Harbaugh took over,
and now he's set to record his fourth top ten
(57:29):
finish and his third straight college football playoff. This time,
Michigan is the number one seed overall. He's the first
Michigan coach to win three consecutive Big Ten championships since
Gary Moeller did it back in ninety ninety one and
ninety two. But here's the big butt peewee. Harball has
continually flirted with the NFL, pursued NFL coaching jobs literally
(57:51):
consistently over the past eight nine years. And as I mentioned,
it got to a fever pitch two years ago because
after the twenty twenty one season, Harvaugh did heavily pursue
the position with the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota wanted to hire
Kevin O'Connell and at that time Harball claimed, and you
(58:12):
can go find it in the Detroit Free Press. Yes,
it's there that this would be the last time Harbaugh
pursued an NFL position. Then one year later, Harbaugh went
on to meet with the Denver Broncos to pursue their vacancy.
Sean Payton was ultimately hired of the coach and if
Harbaugh does not sign the contract, he could be a
candidate for open jobs coming up here in the near term. Now,
(58:35):
I do believe Harball could have gotten the Denver job
had he wanted it. But I do think he actually
walked away because he knew he was getting forty four
seniors back and you know all the great players that
I just mentioned, and they had unfinished business. However, and
so again, the planets weren't aligned two years ago, and
they weren't align last year. But I think they're lying now.
(58:57):
And what else complicates matters? Did I buried? Lead? Hardball's
had a fairly difficult year off the field this year
at Michigan. He was suspended twice, now, one of them
was self imposed won by the Big Ten, four separate
incidents of rule breaking, and he only actually coached six
regular season games this year. Now, Michigan recently in the
(59:18):
last couple of weeks received what's called a notice of
allegation regarding the illegal coaching recruiting practices during the COVID
nineteen dead period and the cheeseburger gate issued. And then
the NCAA is also investigating Michigan and former analyst Conlel
Stallions over that illegal in person recruiting and science stealing
deal that's not adjudicated yet. So what does this mean.
(59:39):
The notice of allegation means you have ninety days to
respond Michigan, So they got till about April. No, no,
not to March. But then after Michigan you know, submits
their official response to the NCAAA. Well, guess what happens next.
The NCAA has sixty days to decide what to do.
This is gonna push till June or long. They're in
(01:00:01):
lines to conundrum. Some people think, well, if Harball is
gonna get a long suspension next year, well he's gonna
be gone. He'll figure it out, he'll lower his demands
or something. But he's not gonna know what he's going
to get because this is gonna be adjudicated till June,
and you know, all NFL openings will be hired. I
guarantee you by probably January tenth, January fifteenth, maybe in
(01:00:22):
a rare case. Harball, I do think, feels a soft
spot in his heart for the team that came back,
the Blake Korums, the Cornelius Johnson's, the Roman Wilson's, the
JJ McCarthy's, the Mike Sanders Stills. But they loses all
those guys after the season, including all five starting linemen,
seven starters on defense. So I think it's now or
(01:00:45):
nothing for Harball to win a national championship, and now
or nothing if he doesn't go to the NFL this year.
I honestly can't picture when he would ever go, because
he turned sixty. And how much longer does you want
to wait? Maybe you just ride it out. But I'm
telling you talk to anybody with knowledge about this. Harball
never really got over losing to his brother in the
(01:01:09):
Super Bowl. And I think Jim Harbaugh, as much as
he'd like to win a national championship, covets winning a
Super Bowl as perhaps the greatest prize in all the sports.
This is a story that we'll be watching, This is
the story we'll be reporting on, and we're very curious
about First things first, how far does Michigan go in
this playoff team? Are they eliminated by Alabama or are
(01:01:30):
they advanced to the finals and win or are advanced
to the finals and lose anyway, right after Monday, January eighth,
irrespective of what happens in these playoffs, I think this
is going to heat up. And I do not think
Jim Harbaugh's decision as to whether or not he returns
to the NFL is predicated at all on what happens
with Michigan in the playoffs. I think what is a
(01:01:53):
far more compelling component to this is what kind of
deal can Harball get? What kind of fit is it
for him? What's the money and what's the control and
the other things to go along with it in his
ability to take care of his staff and bringing staff
and have the autonomy to do what he wants to do.
He's one everywhere he's been San Diego, Stanford, San Francisco, Michigan. Yeah,
(01:02:15):
he's a crazy maker. But let's say he went to
the Chargers, I think you'd have him in the playoffs
within a year or two. And I think he's got
his quarterback there on Justin Herbert, who I think is
wasting away. I can't see enough good things about him
coming up. I can't see enough bad things about what
happened in the Orange Bowl. Very disappointing. We're running down
for you, but first let's go back to our guy,
the chef, Kevin Weyer, with.
Speaker 8 (01:02:36):
The latest lots of controversy in Dallas at the end
of that Cowboys Lions game. Now, Dallas would win this
game twenty to nineteen as Detroit not able to convert
a late two point conversion attempt. However, with twenty three
seconds ago, the Lions appeared to take the lead on
a two point conversion. It was a pass to Taylor Decker. However,
(01:02:57):
the referee Bratt Allen miss Hurddecker. I thought he heard
his teammate, lineman Dan Skipper declare himself as an eligible receiver,
so he announced number seventy instead of the number sixty
eight warn by Taylor Decker. So when Decker ended up
catching the ball, he was pedalized for illegal touching. Well,
that marks the Lions back five yards. They would then
appear to fail a throw an interception for that matter,
(01:03:19):
on the next two point conversion attempt. However, the Cowboys
called for off sides that gave the Lions one last
shot at it and Jared Goss's pass would fall incomplete
and the Cowboys do end up winning it twenty to nineteen.
As for the college ranks the Orange Bowl, man we
were thinking maybe Florida State having a chip on their
(01:03:40):
shoulder after being excluded from the College Football Playoff, but
most of other players decided to not even show up
and play as was largely a game of backups for
Florida State, and it showed as Georgia sixty three to
three they roll over the Seminoles in the Orange Bowl.
It's the worst loss in school history for Florida State.
(01:04:01):
All miss over Penn State thirty eight twenty five in
the Peach Bowl, Maryland beats Auburn thirty one thirteen in
the Music City Bowl, Wyoming over Toledo sixteen fifteen to
win the Arizona Bowl. In the NBA, as bad as
it was for Detroit fans tonight, the Pistons at least
maybe softened it a little bit because their losing streak
has finally come to an end. It's over at twenty
(01:04:23):
eight games after they beat the Raptors one twenty nine
one twenty seven, some controversy in the Timberwolves Lakers game,
as Minnesota ends up winning it one a way to
one oh six, but Lebron James he made a late
basket for LA but it was ruled a two pointer.
James insisted it was a three pointer in a three
would have tied the game. In college hoops, Big Upset
(01:04:43):
Number seven Florida Atlantic upset by Florida Gulf Coast seventy
two to sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
Neck you, Bernie, alright, thanks so much, Jeff, you' be
of course, uh performing at on do it look forward
to it? Listen. Uh, let me start by this saying
the twelve team college football playoff can't get here soon enough.
(01:05:11):
And if we would have had the twelve team playoff
this year, well, we would have had Liberty visiting Florida State,
they would have gotten in. It would have been a
twelve versus five seed. Then the winner would have played
Alabama as the number four seed. We'd have had Missouri
visiting Oregon. The winner would have played number one Michigan
in Old miss at Georgia, with the winner playing Texas
(01:05:32):
and Penn State versus Ohio State at Ohio State, where
the winter playing in Washington, Alabama, Michigan, Texas, and Washington
would have all had buys. That's what's gonna happen next year.
And for the umpteeth time, I have to say the
committee got it right. Was Florida State deserving yes? Did
they earn the right to be in the College Playoff? Yes?
(01:05:56):
But nowhere into bylaws and nowhere in the I would
call protocol. Do the words undefeated? Do the words undefeated
or deserving or earned it up here? They don't. And
by the way, we know this whole situation has a
fundamental flaw, and we've been waiting for something like this
(01:06:18):
to happen. This is the worst year it happened because
you have a situation where you have five five Power
five conference champions, but only four we're going to get in.
So every year a conference champion is going to be
left out. This year it happened to be an undefeated
one because when the you know, the minute Alabama beat
number one Georgia, who had been undefeated when twenty nine
(01:06:41):
games in a row, was going for a three peat.
You were not going to leave out the SEC champion
who beat the number one team that was the number
one Committee team all four weeks and oh, by the way,
the SEC like them or not, they're the real deal.
They've won five of the last six championships, and they've
won fourteen to the last twenty. And they've had five
different schools in the conference. Do it Auburn, Georgia, Alabama,
(01:07:04):
Florida and LSU. You weren't gonna leave them out? Well?
Who did Alabama lose to this year? They lost to Texas,
who became the Big twelve one loss champion. How can
you leave Texas out if you keep Alabama in? That
left two other undefeated teams, Washington and Michigan. So why
is Florida State left out? Well, one of the things
the committee did, and now you know why I call
(01:07:27):
this the made for TV Invitational tournament. It's not a playoff.
I wish it were a playoff. It's a made for
TV Invitational tournament. Look, one of the key components of
what the committee can elect to evaluate is the unavailability
of key players that could affect the performance and out
(01:07:48):
come of a game. So do you think Florida State
miss Jordan Travis? Sure, they won their final three games,
but what Jordan Travis? They were averaging forty one points
a game without Jordan Travis their quarterback. They were avae
twenty points a game with Jordan Travis. They were averaging
four hundred and fifty two yards a game without him
two hundred and twenty one yards per game. They converted
(01:08:10):
their third downs Florida State with Jordan Travis forty one
percent of the time, but only twenty percent of the
time without them. Do you see a pattern here? Do
you really think they were as good with Jordan Travis
as they weren't without them? This is not my decree.
I said this the night before the committee made their decision.
I not only handicapped it, I tweeted it, it's time stamped.
(01:08:32):
I got all four teams right, and I got them
in the right order. What's gonna happen next? I know
there was a lot of teeth gnashing and complaining, and
it was an incredibly unfortunate situation because we don't have
a legitimate playoff. We have a made for TV invitational tournament.
But what happens Saturday bothered me even more. Florida State
(01:08:52):
lost by sixty points. Let's say that they had their
full compliment of players. Let's say they would have had
Jordan Travis, who by all accounts is a wonderful human
being and a phenomenal athlete. I wish that kid nothing
but the best, and I feel terrible for Mike Norvel.
What are you gonna do? Life just isn't fair sometimes,
(01:09:14):
you know. But even if they'd have had their full
Florida State would have had their full compliment. Maybe I'll
say that's worth fifty points, they still would have lost
by ten or more. They weren't Pete in Georgia, and
they weren't one of the best four teams. I'm not
sure they were one of the best four teams with
Jordan Travis, but that's again, just set it aside. This
is all opinion. But the two best teams that didn't
(01:09:38):
make the College Football Playoff based on rankings fifth and
sixth were Georgia and Florida State. Fortunately, only one of
them really showed up. I heard some handicappers earlier today
on a local show, a young lady who gives a
lot of stats saying, oh, I really like Florida State
twenty one points. Oh it's too many. Still got to
(01:09:58):
be based on what you don't know who was playing.
Florida State had a ton of guys opt out. It's
just shame. And then their quarterback Kate Rodemaker, he would have,
you know, been the heir apparent apparently, and you know,
before he got hurt, before the ACC championship game against Louisville,
(01:10:21):
there was talk about whether or not he have to
fight to get the job next year, where they were
gonna give it to him. I thought he was your apparent,
and I said, he's okay, fine, I'm out of here.
And maybe that needs to be fixed too. Maybe there's
nothing wrong with the transfer portal. I'm okay with it,
but maybe you should have to wait till after the
first of the year. I know the deadline is January second.
You have no choice. The kids are hamstrung. But look
(01:10:42):
what happened today. You know, Georgia. They wanted to make
a statement because Georgia might well have won this whole
damn thing. But since they didn't even win their conference championship,
they got left down two. They got a beef two.
I guess. But man, you talk lad McConkey, it's his
final play. He'll be on to the NFL. He showed
(01:11:03):
up and played a lot of players showed up and played,
and I know it's within your right to opt out
in case you're afraid you're going to get hurt and
affect your future NFL earnings. But this was just a debacle.
What is this gaming? Ultimately, did Florida States herendous performance
(01:11:23):
basically give the committee evidence they got it right by
leaving him out? Did Georgia's dominance basically prove to the
committee they got it wrong by not putting him in.
I don't know if you could make either argument, because
it's all conjecture and it's all opinion. I've said it
a thousand times. There are you know, objective truths and
(01:11:44):
there are personal feelings. Most of the people that were
advocating for Florida State and thought this was just a travesty,
they were in their personal fields. It was their own
opinion that Florida State was one of the top four
and they deserved it. They deserve it, they did internet. Unfortunately,
those terms are not laid out in the bylaws. I
(01:12:04):
was hoping today for a better effort out of Florida State.
I really was, and I mean effort. Everybody had to
transfer out. Fine, quarterback had to enter the portal. Fine,
this is what you really want. I think, I think
the fan base of Florida State. I think college football
fans in general deserve better onward and upward. Fortunately, we
(01:12:25):
have a twelve teen playoff in twenty twenty four. It
cannot get here soon enough. Coming up, we are going
to start to edge our way into the National Football
League slate for Week seventeen, which kicks off here in
about nine hours and twenty minutes. What's actually already kicked off.
We had a great Thursday night game. I got Joe Flacco.
(01:12:46):
Come on, man, Cleveland Brown's in the playoffs. If you
don't love Joe Flacco and what the Browns are doing,
then you don't love home cooking. You're a hater. I
think if the sports guys are smiling down, maybe we'll
see a Cleveland Detroit super Bowl. And somebody say, you won't
think the networks want, then I don't care what the
networks want. Every now and then, you know, we can
use a couple of new teams in there, and whoever
you get in there, whether it's be Dallas, don't worry,
(01:13:08):
it won't be forty nine ers, Lamar Jackson, be great.
It's gonna be great. We're all gonna be like me here,
it'd be here in Vegas. I'll be covering it. But
I loved what happened Thursday with Cleveland and Joe Flacco,
and I thought the Lions really acquitted themselves because there's
so many Lion aiters, same old alliance. Just wait, well
that's not fair. So technically the week seventeen slate is
(01:13:31):
already underway, but in nine hours and nineteen minutes it's
gonna resume in earnest. I've got some quick hitters for
those of you that like to throw a few shuckles
on a game. We'll start off with NFL quick hitters
as we head into Week seventeen. I'm Bernie Frattle. We're
coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio tirack dot com studios. Keep it locked, you're listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
we're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio,
(01:13:53):
coming to you live tyrack dot Com studios here in
Las Vegas. Take you up to three am Pacific, six

to tune into Fox Sports Radio every Sunday morning beginning
at ten am Eastern seven am Pacific for Contdown to

(01:14:17):
Bill Krackenberger, My buddy, We'll have you covered three hours
before kickoff every Sunday morning. Listen to Contdown to kickofpers
ed up by BETMGM right here on Fox Sports Radio
in the iHeart Radio app. All right, little fun, top
of the hour, We're going to start to break down
in earnest these matchups week seventeen. And there are some
(01:14:40):
good ones and there are some notable ones, and not
just the marquee ones like Baltimore and Miami. There are
plenty of teams out there who they're out of the playoffs,
but they have a chance to pee on someone else's parade.
I remember when I covered a lot of Lions losing,
losing teams between ninety eight and oh eight. They took
eat pride. Actually, you get to December and you know
(01:15:04):
they're playing free and easy, they're going nowhere and they'll
face a team with pressure and they would take it
was great pride in ruining somebody else's season by knocking
out of the playoffs. And by the way, we talked
about this last night with crack Man. Don't ever bet
a team because it's a must win situation. Thirty one
of the thirty two teams will lose the game they
(01:15:26):
must win. You follow what I'm saying there, You follow
my drift. But the Bills, they're on in seven against
the spread, they're past seven games as a double digit favorite,
and believe it or not, they're all three against the
spread this season as a double digit favorite. So you
(01:15:50):
got to be very wary of you know, just because
the team looks good. They're laying fourteen against the New
England Patriots that look moribund. But it's a divisional game.
And I don't like leading double digits ever, but especially
in a divisional game. And when you look at it,
this is a trend that correlates. So past seven games
is a double digit favorite, the Bills are owing seven
(01:16:10):
against the number, including going three this year. You're starting
to pay a bit of a Bill's tax anyway, because
they're good. They're playing good ball at the right time. Meanwhile,
the Raiders, the Raiders, they are actually six and one
against the spread in seven games since hiring interim coach
Antonio Pears, and they're four to one against the number,
and they're past five as an underdog. So the Raiders,
(01:16:33):
they were getting three in Indianapolis. Actually a lot of
sharp money is coming on Indianapolis. That number is up
to four. That's not a game I am involved in.
But the Raiders are playing very spirited football. So that's
a trend or a bit of a quick hitter. That
do with what you will. By the way, the Rams,
(01:16:54):
they're getting a lot of love right now. People are
projecting that, you know, they're the one team that could
give the Niners a hard time in the playoffs. We're
nowhere near that point. And I really believe if the
Rams end up going to Detroit in a three to
six matchup, Detroit'll beat him. And I know someone will
save this. And you know people like to lie and
(01:17:16):
wait and play got you. It's all good. I'm sticking
to my guns. But the Rams have covered five straight
and they head to New York to play the Giants Sunday,
and again you're paying a bit of a Rams tax
now because they're playing so well. The line opened at six,
some Giants money came in and got down to five
and a half is now back up to six, and
Tarad Taylor has them competitive, So I think the Giants
(01:17:39):
are going to give the Rams a handful. The Rams
may win, but it'll be a handful. Meanwhile, Arizona quarterback
Carler Murray fifteen and six against the spread in his
career as a Roade underdog, twelve and ten outright, the
Arizona Cardinals are actually good value at catching twelve against
the Eagles on Sunday. The Buccaneers only one in six
(01:18:00):
outright against teams currently with winning records. Now, it's a
great story out of Tampa Bay. They've done really well.
I like what Baker Mayfield has done. They're gonna get
to the playoffs. I think they can be a very
tough out. They host the Saints. They lay in two
and a half. You'll never see me back the Saints.
You know what I feel about Derek Carr. The Titans
one and five against the spread in their past six games.
(01:18:22):
Is underdogs one and five against the spread their past
six road games. They just aren't getting it done. Coming up,
we continue the rest of the NFL in Earnest. Keep
it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show. Actually,
I'll tell you what. Let's do this Let's squeeze a
couple more in here. Let's squeeze a couple more in here.
I talked about the Titans and the Titans catching two
(01:18:44):
and a half. I don't know what's happened to that team.
Will Levis has hurt, they have quarterback issues, they have
issues all around the field, so you got to be
very careful with them. And they haven't been great as
a dog this year, and they're facing a very game
Houston Texans team at home. It looks like CJ. Stroud
He's gonna play bike Vrabel was always such a good
dog too, but that seems to have changed. The Chargers
(01:19:05):
one and five against the spread as underdogs this season,
only six alright, one and five against the number against
teams with winning records. But they got a new coach,
and I bet you're gonna see her at least an
interim coach, and I think you'll see a spirited game
against the Broncos, who also have an interim coach. Broncos
laying three and a half. By the way. One final thing,
all five Chiefs games against teams with winning records this
(01:19:26):
year have gone under the total. Coming up, we're gonna
dive heavily into the NFL. Keep it locked. You're listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yep,
that's right, you heard the man Bernie Fradle Show. Keeps
her roller right along. My name is Bernie Fraddlewick. Coming
to you line from the tyrack dot com studios here

(01:19:48):
An unmatched selection, fast free shipping for your road as protection,
and over ten thousand recommend an installers tyrack dot com
The way tire buying should be well. An exciting game
Thursday for the Cleveland Browns and after a very controversial
yet exciting although it was an artful, but a game
(01:20:10):
that featured just about a little bit of everything. Saturday Night,
in which the Dallas Cowboys prevailed twenty to nineteen amidst controversy,
albeit on the night that Michael Irvin was in attendance
and Jimmy Johnson got his Ring of Honor. Finally, after
thirty years, we move on with the rest of the slate,
(01:20:33):
and some of the games you may not necessarily find
them compelling, but in almost every game, with the exception
of a couple, it is going to have implications on
whether or not a team gets into the playoffs, gets
knocked out of the playoffs, has a home game, has
to go on the road, seeding, you name it. We
start with the Pats and Bills Patriots four to eleven,
(01:20:55):
visiting the Bills, who played great football lately, great ball.
They're nine and six. They appear very dangerous, all right,
Buffalo laying thirteen points now up to fourteen. The Patriots
actually won the first meeting in October, but the Bills
are now twelve and one in home games against division
opponents in the last three years, including the playoffs, the
(01:21:17):
one loss coming to New England in twenty twenty one.
I don't expect that the Bills will lose Sunday. Theyn't
know that they cover the fourteen. But the Bills have
won three straight while the Pats are coming off their
win at Denver, which ostensibly cost Russell Wilson his job.
Josh Allen was quoted saying, frankly, it's a game we
need to win, and they know that. We know that.
(01:21:38):
And if I'm in the New England Patriot locker room, I'm
looking to ruin their season. What did I just tell
you before the break. What are the things gonna happen?
This feels like a twenty eight to seventeen Bills win,
twenty seven the Bills might cover. I don't like laying
double digits, but that's a game I expect the Bills
to win. Forget the must win thing. I know that
you know how I feel about that. But the Bills
(01:21:59):
are much better and they truly are fletching their muscle
right now. A game that also has some playoff implications
because the Falcons are still trying. They're seven and eight.
It's the odds are against them, but you can't count
them out of making the playoffs, even though the chances
(01:22:19):
are very, very slim. And meanwhile, the Bears are trying
to figure out what's their situation going to be next year?
Are you really going to run a back with justin Fields?
If not, this could be his final home game in Chicago.
They are looking for the fifth straight win. The Bears
have a ninety six percent chance to earn the number
one overall pick via Carolina, and who knows what they're
(01:22:41):
eyeing a quarterback Falcons. They're only averaging thirteen points down
the road this season, as opposed to twenty three at home,
so we'll see what happens in that game. Bears again
laying three. Both of these teams are technically a lie
for the playoffs, but I don't really say, you know,
Bears are six and nine. I don't want to go
down that road. The Falcons have a twelve point three
(01:23:04):
percent chance of making the playoffs if they win and
if they lose six percent. Interestingly enough, regardless of whether
Atlanta wins or not, it won't change their odds to
win the NFC South because are completely dependent on the
Bucks losing to the Saints, and the Bucks are at
home against the Saints. We'll get to that game in
(01:23:24):
just a second. All right, game I talked about a
little bit earlier, and anytime the Raiders play, I think
it's got national interest, especially when you consider now that
Antonio appears, who's done a fabulous job, who's changed the
culture of the Raiders. Four and three, They went into
Kansas City, beat them, spanked them on Christmas Day. He's
(01:23:44):
interviewing for this job. So you've got the Raiders who
are seven and eight visiting the Colts who are eight
and seven. What's at stake? What's a massive game for
both teams. The Colts win this game and their three
and a half point favorites, they won't have a sixty
four percent chance of making the playoffs and even a
twenty nine percent chance to win the NFC South. But
if the Colts get upset by the Raiders, they only
(01:24:06):
have a twenty percent chance of making the playoffs and
a three percent chance of winning the division again. Interim
coach Antonio Pierce his defense has created a whole new look.
They've held four to four of their seven opponents under
one hundred yards rushing. Meanwhile, the Colts suddenly very inconsistent
(01:24:28):
with their ground game, and they've been limited to fewer
than one hundred total rushing yards in three to the past
four games, so this could be one of those situations
where it could be a grinded out. They will have
Jonathan Taylor and Zach Moss healthy for the first time
since Thanksgiving weekend. How do I see this game? I
see it as a coin flip game, but I see
(01:24:48):
the Colts prevailing by about a field goal. They're home,
their better team, and I think there'll be a They'll
make one or two more key plays. The Raiders are
still very challenged offensively an interesting game that all of
a sudden you are starting to get much more national
player on the The Rams are getting their flowers or
eight and seven, and let's give Sean Veay credit for
(01:25:10):
one of his best coaching jobs, and guys like you know,
Puka Nakua and Karen Williams are becoming household names. The
Rams are currently the sixth seed in the NFC. They
do have a seventy five chance of reaching the playoffs.
The reason that projection is so healthy is partly because
they're a six point favorite on the road against the Giants.
(01:25:31):
If the Rams get upset against the Giants and you
cannot roll that out travel situation, Cole Weather site Torod
Taylor might make a player too. You know you had
fun with Tommy DeVito, call him Tommy Cutlets or whatever
you want to call him. Toron Taylor's dangerous in short
situations like this, and he's actually got a forty one
(01:25:52):
QBR in the last four years, as supposed Tommy DeVito's
twenty two. He might make a player too. To Ronn,
Taylor is one of those dangerous veterans who's like stuck
between a standing back up and a guy it's just
not quite good enough to be a starter. After he's
you know, started six seven weeks, you start to realize
he's not a starter, but he's good. I think he's
gonna give the Rams some problems. Again. The Rams could
(01:26:13):
punch their postseason ticket if they just win the game
or if Seattle loses. But I think the Rams have
designs on winning. But it's not a game I'm involved in.
Would it surprise you if the Rams went in there
and did a number beat the beat the Giants by ten? No,
but I got a funny feeling New York hangs around
that number, even though it's not a game I'm involved in.
(01:26:36):
The Arizona Cardinals. I talked about this game earlier. Catching fourteen.
They're at the Eagles. Eagles are eleven and four now.
The Lions got their fifth loss today in the NFC,
the Cowboys have a fifth loss, and and you've got
the forty nine ers at four losses. So the Eagles
still have designs. It's not going to be easy to
(01:26:56):
perhaps perhaps be the number one seed. It's a long
it's bit of a long shot because I expect the
Niners to win their final two games. One of the
angles in this game is Arizona's coach Jonathan Gannon. He
makes a return to Philadelphia. He's the former defensive coordinator.
Had a bit of a bumpy exit last year. They
had seventeen fourth quarter points when they lost to the
(01:27:18):
Chiefs in the Super Bowl. That cost him his job,
But the Eagles defense without him is still ranking. Was
a ranked number two overall under Ganathan last year. And
the Eagles actually defensively this season has struggled. They went
from Sean to side to pat Matt Patricia, who never
inspires confidence in my view. But what's in stake? Well,
(01:27:38):
the Eagles are already in the playoffs and they can
clinch the NFC East with a win. Now, the Cowboys
didn't lose, so the Eagles wouldn't have had to win
if the Cowboys would have lost. But if the Eagles win,
even if the Eagles don't clinch, their chances to win
the division are ninety two with ninety two percent with
a win. If you followed all that, what do I
(01:28:01):
expect to happen? I expect the Eagles to win, and
I expect them to win by margin. They might win
by two touchdowns, they might win by three touchdowns. I
feel like it's more like a ten point game. The
Eagles have some issues that they got to resolve, frankly,
the run game, et cetera. And as much as I
like Jalen Hurts, he's got to stop turning the ball
over Coming up, we're gonna go through the rest of
(01:28:22):
the slate and how the Houston Texans actually got a
bit of an early Christmas present with a certain player
they'll have back on Sunday on Bernie Fraddle, We're coming
to live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirack
dot Com studios. Don't go away, You're listening to the
Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back
on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio Comedy live
(01:28:43):
from the Tirack dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Don't forget coming out top of the hour two and
Pacific five em Eastern. What kind of brand new food
you followed by what my name? By the way, Patrick,
try to connect with Andy Furman. I want to bring
him up on the D block before I sign off
at you know, just before five point fifty four am
(01:29:07):
Eastern time. Get his thoughts on the Lions debacle and
whether or not he thinks there needs to be an investigation.
I want to get his thoughts, and he's good on
his stuff, and so see if you cannackle him, keep
talk with me off air, Patrick and we'll figure it out.
Maybe you'll get him on a comrax or something. All right,
Saints Buccaneers, this is the battle for the South, meaning
(01:29:30):
the NFC South. Saints are seven and eight, Buccaneers are
eight and seven. Really good timing for Tampa Bay. They're
on a four game winning streak and they've won three
of the past meetings against the Saints. Baker Mayfield having
a good year, one pass away, one touchdown pass away
from tying his rookie record of twenty seven. You know,
Baker's taking some heat in his career, right, But wherever
(01:29:51):
he took over a team in Cleveland it was one
in thirty one. Actually helped get him to the playoffs.
Actually won a playoff game actually at Kansas City in
trouble in the fourth quarter and the defense couldn't hold it.
So what's at stake? Simple, the Bucks win, you give
them their third consecutive NFC South title, fourth straight playoff berth.
Tampa is still the odds on favorite to win the
(01:30:11):
division and make the playoffs even if they lose. The
Bucks basically seventy one percent to accomplish both. But the
Saints need to win to stay alive. If they lose Sunday,
they are eliminated. How's that Derek Carr thing working out?
Not going to be an easy game, though, I expect
an effort out of New Orleans. But I don't trust
New Orleans as far as I can throw them. I
(01:30:33):
feel like the Saints. I feel like the Bucks prevail.
Not involved in the game, but it might be right
around the number. The Bucks we're laying three now, they're
laying two and a half, all right. The forty nine
ers eleven and four. They take their eleven and four
record into Washington, they're laying double digits. Finally, a former
defensive end who played for the Commandos, Chase Young, makes
(01:30:54):
his return two months after being acquired by the San
Francisco forty nine Ers. Chase Young got five sacks in
seven games with Washington, only has two in seven games
in San Francisco, although he'd been a backup after starting
for the Commanders. But if his fifty three pastress wins
thirty eight came with Washington, so he get a chance
to sack his former quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who will be
(01:31:17):
making his first start of the season. This game feels
like it very much could be a blowout. It will
not surprise me. If the Niners win by three touchdowns,
the Niners can wrap up the number one seed, a
buy and home field advantage with a win and losses
by the Lions and Eagles. Well, the Lions have already
lost now. If the Eagles lose the Niners, they can
(01:31:39):
wrap up the number one seed the following week, as
they had the tiebreaker, but they could wrap it up
Sunday if they win, the Niners win in the Eagles lose.
Moving on, Jaguars eight and seven at home against the Panthers.
Look Bryce Young, who I think a lot of do
not go to sleep on this guy. He can play.
(01:32:01):
He's not a deer in the headlights at all. He's
showing some real flashes. They got to protect him a
little bit. Only Sam Howell the Commanders has been sacked
more than Bryce Young, and that might be a good
sign for the Jags pass rush, which isn't exactly great.
Jags laying six and a half in this game. What's
at stake? Well, despite the Jags being on a bit
(01:32:23):
of a losing streak, Well, they can win the AFC
South on Sunday if they win, If the Jags win
and the Texans lose and the Colts lose, even if
they don't clinch, Jacksonville's basically eighty eight percent to make
the playoffs, seventy nine percent to win the Division. One keynote,
it's my understanding Trevor Lawrence, who never missed the game
in high school, never missed the game in college, will
(01:32:46):
miss the game Sunday. That makes the Panthers alive to me,
six and a half points, very very tempting. Okay, And
what's being bill is the Marquis the game of the day,
the one everybody's really talking about. The Dolphins visit Baltimore.
Baltimore a three point favorite. Dolphins are eleven to four,
(01:33:06):
the Ravens twelve and three. This is a showdown between
clearly the two highest scoring offenses Dolphins are averaging twenty
nine points a game and the league's stingiest defense, the
immovable object versus a resistible force Baltimore only allowing sixteen
points a game. Fourth time that the number one scoring
(01:33:27):
defense has faced the number one scoring offense in the
final two weeks of the regular season fifty years. You
might be interested to know the team of the highest
scoring offense has won three of the four meetings. So
once at stake the Ravens, well, they would really be sitting. Fact,
if they get a win, they would clinch the number
one seed and home field advantage in the NFC playoffs.
(01:33:49):
After the Browns wins Thursday night, the Ravens do need
to win to clinch the AFC North. The loss would
drop the Ravens chances at the number one seed to
forty one percent because where they'd be tied with the
Dolphins in the lost column. The Dolphins can also cleanse
their division Sunday. Or let's put it that way, if
(01:34:10):
a Bill's loss locks or check that, if a Bill's win,
could could go towards locking up the AFC East. But
if the Dolphins win and the Bills lose, all of
a sudden, now Dolphins not only win the AFC East,
they got a shot and locking up the number one seed.
Believe it or not, in fifty six percent, that is
going to be a hell of a game. I think
(01:34:31):
it is a field goal game. Flip a coin. Either
the Ravens win by a field goal or the Dolphins
win by a field goal. That's really the way I
see it. I'm not getting involved in that game. I
had mentioned the Texans would be getting a little Christmas
present here, and they are. They're eight and seven. I
can't say enough good things about Tomico Ryans. I don't
know what the hell we're talking about here. If he
(01:34:52):
does not, if Demico Ryans does not win the Coach
of the Year, I don't know what this what it
stands for. You know, Dan Campbell as he deserve. But
the Lions were projected to win the UNFC North. Okay,
they were gonna sneak up on anybody. They were eating
two coming down the stretch last year. Not only were
the Texans not predicted to do anything, nobody even wanted
that job. People are saying, why would Damiico Ryans take
(01:35:13):
that job? Two coaches barely lasted a year. It's a
dumpster Firewell look what the Texans have done. They're hosting
the Titans five and ten, Houston Lang and a tidy
five and a half points. This is amazing. I think
this is a great story. Tip your hat to the
Houston Texans and Dimico Ryans and CJ. Stroud he's cleared
concussion protocol. There is the Christmas present because the Texans
(01:35:38):
are a totally different team with c J. Stroud, and
the Texans control their destiny. Believe it or not. If
the Texans just win Sunday, they'll be in the postseason.
And before CJ. Stroud suffered that concussion, he'd actually led
the league in passing yards and through twenty tds in
(01:35:59):
five in or second because he's no for almost thirty
seven hundred yards. Incredible. With CJ. Stroud manning the Texans offense,
they're tempting scoring at twenty four points a game and
their six in total offense SIGT how about three hundred
and seventy yards a game Without him? Both drop off dramatically.
So again, what's the meaning of this game? A win
(01:36:20):
for the Texans basically gives them a shot to qualify
for the playoffs next week and a puncher's chance to
take in the AFC South. The fact that you're even
having this conversation in late December heading into January about
the Texans is incredible. Do I think the Texans get
it done Sunday. Absolutely, this team's real man. They play
four quarters, they block, they tackle, they finish. I'm impressed.
(01:36:45):
Another interesting game which will take place in Seattle between
two eight and seven teams. Steelers coming off their impressive
thirty four to eleven win last week visit Seattle. Seattle
lay in three and a half. And I get it
that the Seattle Seahawks run defense not been great lately.
But and by the way, they're facing a team in
Pittsburgh who came out of the dumpster fire and got
(01:37:08):
touchdown catches from George Pickens last week. A couple of
long ones and all of a sudden, now you know,
Pittsburgh looks like they have life. But fortunately just in time.
Devin Witherspoon, the Seahawks cornerback, the number one their first
round pick out of Illinois, has been outstanding returns from
(01:37:28):
the hit pointer he's missed the last three games, and
that'll be a great matchup Devin Witherspoon and George Pickens.
So what's the significance of this game? Third straight win
would lock the Seahawks into the playoffs as the Packers
Vikings game is, and a tie, not much chance of that.
But even if it doesn't happen, Seahawks are in good shape.
Of the win, the chances to make the playoffs would
(01:37:48):
be about eighty eight percent. And even if they lose,
they still have a chance to make the playoffs about
forty percent. And yeah, I believe it or not. The Steelers,
they can lose and still have a five percent chance
to make the playoffs. But the Steelers actually win, their
playoff chances increase to twenty four percent. What do I
expect to happen? I expect the Seahawks to win, but
(01:38:11):
I also expected to be a field goal game. One
of the games probably has has one of the least
amount of interest around the league. Of the Chargers who
are five and ten, Visit Denver, who's seven and eight.
Chargers got rid of Brandon Staley a couple of weeks ago,
and meanwhile the Broncos it looks like they've parted ways
(01:38:32):
with Russell Wilson. He's benched. I doubt they'll play him
the final two weeks. If they do and he gets hurt,
they could own thirty seven million next year. Check that
they're already gonna own thirty seven million. They could own
thirty nine million, so Denver will be starting Jared Stidham,
who the good news for him is the Chargers defense
is ranked twenty ninth to overall in around about three
(01:38:52):
hundred and eighty yards a game, so Steadham has a
chance over the next two games to stake a claim
to compete for perhaps the starter Denver next year. But
he had the same situation here in the Raiders last
year and that didn't work out okay, So again the
significance the playoffs and the AFCU West. They're still unbelievably
(01:39:13):
in play for the Broncos, so if they win, they'll
have about an eight percent chance to make the postseason.
We'll just leave it right there. I don't feel like
it's in the cards. The Chargers are only five at
two to five against his bread their last seven games.
It sounds like a real low scoring game to me.
This is a game you might want to take a
look at the under depending on where it lands, and
I think it's currently around thirty five and a half.
(01:39:35):
But it feels like whoever whichever team gets to seventeen
points first wins this game. And I don't see how
the hell the Chargers get to seventeen points coming up.
We're going to continue. We got to get to the
Bengals Chiefs. That's a very important game. The Packers Vikings
also a very important game. I'm Bernie Fradlewer Comedy Live

There going for the win with twenty three seconds to go, Wow,
twenty three seconds to play. Down by one, they'll go
for two. Jared Goff moves in behind center. Single back
behind him is Montgomery. Cough takes turns, fakes to give
the Montgomery sets the pocket, throws en zone wide open.
Speaker 1 (01:41:17):
It is Cough, Taylor Decker, two pikes.
Speaker 10 (01:41:20):
Oh my goodness, are you kiddy by Pet Johnson?
Speaker 5 (01:41:23):
Pat Johnson, Pat Johnson, Oh Babby? The Liars have the lead?
What a play? What's the f No?
Speaker 1 (01:41:31):
They're well they saying Skipper didn't report. What was the call?
Illegal touching? Which the Lions is keeping their offense on
the field. They're gonna go for two again anyway, goes
for two from the seven yard line.
Speaker 10 (01:41:43):
Kauf is gonna work empty out of the gun, leans in,
there's the snap, golf back off looking golf in trouble,
throws end zone pickoff.
Speaker 1 (01:41:51):
There's a fire guy on the far.
Speaker 5 (01:41:52):
Side of the field.
Speaker 1 (01:41:54):
I think Dallas may have jumped.
Speaker 5 (01:41:55):
Yeah, I think Zachlas may have jumped.
Speaker 1 (01:41:57):
It's off sides against Dallas. The Lions will get another
shot from.
Speaker 8 (01:42:00):
The two yard line, so on the third attempt. That
was a Lion's radio network, by the way. With the
call on the third attempt, Jared Goff's pass would fall
incomplete and the Cowboys would eventually come away with a
twenty to nineteen win. And the main issue though was
Taylor Decker number sixty eight. He thought he declared himself
as eligible, but referee Brad Allen claimed that Decker did not. Instead,
(01:42:24):
Alan thought it was Dan Skipper number seventy, so that's
what he reported number seventy as eligible. So when Decker
caught the pass, he was penalized for legal touching and
that's what led to that series of events right there.
So Detroit fans not happy after that ending there in Dallas.
As for the college ranks, nothing really exciting when it
(01:42:44):
comes to the Orange Bowl because Georgia, I mean this game,
really it was a laughable contest. Florida State really didn't
have anyone of note actually participating in it after they
were snubbed from the College Football Playoff. But I didn't
expect this to come from Georgia. Sixty three the Bulldogs
win it. It's the largest loss in school history for
Florida State. A little more excitement in some of the
(01:43:06):
other bulls is all miss beat Penn State thirty to
twenty five in the Peach Bowl, Maryland over Auburn thirty
one thirteen in the Music City Bowl. The closest game
of the day was Wyoming over Toledo sixteen fifteen to
win the Arizona Bowl. In the NBA, the Pistons and
their twenty eight game losing streak as they beat the
Raptors one twenty nine one twenty seven. Minnesota over the Lakers.
(01:43:27):
One await one oh six, but Lebron James Adamant that
his two point shot was actually a three and had
it been a three, it would have tied the game,
but the Timberwolves coming away after uh a couple of
foul shots after that, one await one oh six the
final there And in college basketball number seven, Florida Atlantic
upset by Florida Gulf Coast seventy two to sixty eight.
Speaker 1 (01:43:49):
Back to you, Bernie, all.
Speaker 2 (01:43:50):
Right, thanks, chef, another good performance, by the way. Will
you be with us Sunday night, Chef.
Speaker 1 (01:43:57):
We'll be here.
Speaker 2 (01:43:58):
I will be bringing in the new year with you,
Burn beautiful you me Shay and and and of course
Mark Ramsey, our technical producer. All Right, so an interesting
divisional matchup between the Packers and Vikings will take place
in Minnesota. They're both seven and eight. Vikings after the
disappointing loss last week. I give it up to Kevin
(01:44:22):
O'Connell's done a real good job. They're down to what
their third fourth quarterback. They're now going to start Jaron Hall.
The Vikings out of BYU. They're out of options. Nick
Mallins through six interceptions in his two starts. Josh Dobbs
wasn't able to move the offense. He had a couple
of good games and then that went off a cliff,
and of course Kirk Cousins he's hurt. So the Vikings, well, listen,
(01:44:45):
it's a must game win for both teams. And you
know how I feel about must win games. Thirty one
of the thirty two team teams will lose the game
they must win, and that's the later season is going
to end. The Packers. You'd rather it'll be the Packers
and the Vikings though, because if they win, they have
a fifty three percent chance to make in the playoffs,
but they'd be on the brink of elimination if they
(01:45:07):
lose and it's it's not quite as extreme for the Vikings,
but they got, you know, thirty nine percent chance to
make in the playoffs. What do I expect to happen?
I don't know. I think this is an absolute coin
flip game. Absolutely not a game I'm going to be
involved in. It would not surprise me if the Packers
won and a game decided by a field goal or less,
or the Vikings won in a game decided by a
(01:45:29):
field goal or less, and frankly, that's the way I
see it. Finally, the Bengals and Chiefs, well, the Chiefs
are nine to six, Bengals are eight and seven, and
if this game is anything like recent Chiefs Bengals meetings
from recent years, it'll come down to the end. The
problem is you don't have, you know, the same quarterbacks
you have Jake Browning, you don't have Joe Burrow. The
(01:45:52):
Chiefs can lock up their eighth straight consecutive AFC West
Crown with a win or losses the Raiders and Broncos. Well,
that couldn't That could happen. That could happen. Even if
the Chiefs don't clinch the division, well, the win guarantees
them a playoff spot. They're gonna they got a ninety
three percent chance of making the playoffs. They're gonna make it. Okay,
(01:46:13):
even if they lose, they got a ninety percent chance.
There's a lot more volatility for the Bengals. We're still alive.
They have a fifty perchance of making the playoffs, but
if they lose, it drops to just about zero, maybe
a little above zero. Could this be the first year?
Could this be the first year that you have a
situation where Patrick Mahomes actually has to go on the
(01:46:35):
road and make the playoffs or to win a playoff game.
It sounds like they'll have at least one home playoff game.
But unless they you know, something dramatic happens, they're they're
on their way to having to go on the road.
Because I don't think they're catching Baltimore. I don't think
they're catching Miami. They need a hell of a lot
(01:46:57):
of help. But in the meantime, they just the Chiefs
got to worry about what they can control. And if
they win Sunday, they're going to clinch the division. They're
going to and they're gonna have at least one home
playoff game. So you take it from there. But as
you can see, Sunday Slate has a lot of playoff
implications coming up. One particular coach that you thought was
(01:47:21):
gonna be gone for sure, Not so fast, my friend.
It turns out he might be returning after all. Yeah,
this is a game. This is a name I think
you're very familiar with. I'm Bernie Fraddle, Come to you
live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirech dot com studios.
Don't go away, you're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back on the Bernie
(01:47:41):
Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you live from
the Tyraq dot com studios here in Las Vegas to
take you up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern.
Remember coming up top of the hour two am Pacific,
five am Eastern. What kind of brand new fool you
followed by what my name? Well, believe it or not.
(01:48:04):
After everything that's transpired, a couple of respected NFL and
sadders actually think that Bill Belichick could return to the Patriots.
Pats well, they've shown some signs of improvement the past month,
and some are wondering if that success will be enough
to keep Bill Belichick with the team in twenty twenty four.
(01:48:27):
Apparently there's one scenario he could see Belichick staying with
the Patriots for at least one more season. Albert Beer
Sports Illustrated said he thought, you know, maybe it's about
fifty to fifty, maybe a little less than fifty to
fifty that Belichick returns. But if Belichick does want to
coach the Patriots twenty twenty four, here's a scenario where
it could work. Robert Kraft goes to Belichick and lays
(01:48:50):
it out. This is coming from Albert Preer. I give
him credit. He says, we're going to structure football ops.
We're going to restructure football ops since we were gonna
probably do that anyway after you retired. So rather than
wait for that, keep one thing in mind. Belichick maybe
(01:49:10):
seventy one, but he's the third all time winning is
coach behind Don Shula and George Hallis. And it's off
the top of my head, but I'm gonna say he's
about twenty four victories behind Don Shula to be the
all time leading coach, leading winner, or how the almost
all time wins. Try to get it again in English,
(01:49:33):
Belichick's about twenty four wins behind of Don Sula for
catching him to become the all time winning as coach
in the National Football League. Thoughtful New England to win
what twelve games in back to back seasons might take
three eight one season. I don't know. Forget the math.
He's got to be coaching somewhere to do it. But
Breer's theory was that Craft and the Patriots are gonna
(01:49:54):
have to completely restructure the entire operation after Belichick retires,
So rather than wait for that, do it now. Hire
a general manager. Belichick won't have to report to room,
but the GM won't report to Belichick either. Both would
report to Robert Kraft. They would work together. The job
would be to build the roster up to ninety, then
(01:50:16):
find the best fifty three and let's go. And if
you want to be a part of that, great, If not,
you find a graceful way to end it. That's Albert
Pears theory. Maybe he may very well be right. Jeff Dawson,
my Boston contact came out. I was hosting the Ben
Maller Show Thursday night and we had him on. He
(01:50:36):
said the same thing. They are starting to get cold feet.
Maybe they don't want to part with Belichick, so quickly.
We don't know yet. It's all completely up in the year,
but the bottom line is it would be a pretty
grand departure because Bill Belichick is the head coach and
general manager and chief cook and bottle, well, you name it.
(01:50:57):
He's run on the show in New England and that
structure has been in place for years. And there might
even be language in Belichick's contract that gives him a
final say over a roster decisions. Since the Pats have
one of the worst rosters in football. There's always been
questions about whether Belichick should step aside as GM and
(01:51:18):
focus just on coaching. Now, it might sound far fetched
that Belichick would agree to be stripped well some of
his responsibilities just to remain with the team. But what
if there's no other team that wants Belichick. That could happen.
You don't know. It's a tough fit. And that scenario
that Albert Durer lays out might be more realistic if
that's in fact the case. Although for whatever reason, and
(01:51:42):
I just don't buy it, Belichick's been repeatedly linked to
one particular team and that's the Chargers. I don't know, man,
do the Chargers really bring in a seventy one year
old guy who's had the type of control he's had
in New England. I don't know, and it's a big
fat I don't know. Before I get to the latest
(01:52:03):
on Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, he always manages to stay in
the news. He's doing some recruiting. Why to give a
shout out to one of Fox Sports radio most loyal listeners,
dedicated listeners, that would be shitty, Sean constantly listening, constantly tweeting.
Appreciate the support. There are lots of choices in the world,
but Sean is always listening to Fox Sports Radio and
(01:52:25):
he listens to my show because he tweets at me,
So we appreciated Sean. Hope you have a happy New
Year with your family. Wonder if Aaron Rodgers will have
a happy New Year. And I'm not talking about New
Year's Eve and partying. What I am talking about, however,
is the following, What's gonna happen with the Jets in
twenty twenty four? Well it turns out. Look, you remember
(01:52:47):
last year, Aaron Rodgers kind of went with his friends
and family plan, and he was very vocal last off
season about telling the New York Jets, which players he
wanted them to pursue, and the thought now is Aaron
Rodgers He's going to take the same approach heading into
twenty twenty four. Apparently, it was reported last week that
(01:53:09):
Rogers has already listed several players who could be on
the quote Aaron Rodgers twenty twenty four watch list. The
most obvious, if you believe it. I don't know, but
it's fun to talk about is DeVante Adams, who I'm
not so sure how happy he is with the Raiders.
He came here to join Derek Carr. That went over
(01:53:30):
like a fart in church, never materialized, cars gone. I
don't think Devanta Adams is particularly happy. The Raiders are
really going nowhere this year. Maybe next year, but not
this year. So would that be something to reunite those
two teammates that spend so much time together in Green Bay?
There are multiple reports that Jets tried to acquire DeVante
Adams at the trade deadline earlier this season, and it
(01:53:52):
appears they might even make another attempt in some coming weeks.
Another player that it's been reported that in tits page
Aaron Rodgers is recruiting, he's Green Bay. The Packers tackle
David Baktiari, who's one of Aaron Rodgers' closest friends. Back
TIERI also a strong candidate to be cut from the
(01:54:12):
Packers this season. That's been reported. He's thirty two years
old now, which gets to be up there for an
offensive lineman in the National Football League. He's got a
base salary of about eleven million and twenty twenty four.
He's had multiple knee surgeries in recent years. But hey,
much like Rodgers has done before, you know, we'll take
you over here in New York. The question is will
(01:54:33):
the Jets bite? I don't know. The same could also
be true of star running back Aaron Jones, who is
going to count more than seventeen million dollars against the
salary cap last season. Rogers might want to have Jones
in New York. And obviously, Aaron Rodgers is also on
the record apparently saying he's a big fan of Aaron Jones.
(01:54:55):
Could you imagine if this all came to fruition, Davante Adams,
David Bachtiari, Aaron Jones. Here's what I'm wondering. You know,
this is the question you kind of have to ask yourself.
Given the fact that the Jets Rogers situation just became
such a debacle. It was unfortunate. Four players into the season,
(01:55:18):
the Jets season was done. You know it. So how
much input, how much control? How you know? How much
you know? How many opinions that will you know, Joe
Douglas value and except from Aaron Rodgers in terms of
his contributions in personnel decisions. In other words, is Joe
(01:55:43):
Douglas really going to have Aaron Rodgers personnel input? How
much more does he wanted to have when the Jets
were working on luring Aaron Rodgers away from Green Bay
last year? You know Rogers and everybody forgets it. He
is a four time MVP. He was able to bring
in the players that he asked to bring in, like
Alan Lizard and Randall Cobb. Unfortunately, Nieders made any kind
(01:56:05):
of impact this season, although you never know. Had Aaron
Rodgers not torn his achilles in Week one, they might have.
But look, Rogers recently made a statement that I think
surprised some people about how long you plans to play.
So I know this, whether or not he gets personnel input,
(01:56:26):
whether or not they bring in the players he wants
to bring in, whether or not you know Aaron Rodgers
can stay injury free. I'm sure the Jets want him
to be happy. They're going to try to do what
they can to keep Aaron Rodgers content. So maybe you
succumb to Aaron Rodgers, you know, requests. I wouldn't call
him demands, but you know when Rogers talks, he he
(01:56:50):
has a tendency to be a little forceful. So maybe
you make a splash. Maybe you bring in av DeVante
Adams and that, you know, gives new life in Jeck's
new and effusion into the Packers and what has been
an incredibly disappointing season. Packers to check that Jets. Finally,
you know, we've been talking about the Chiefs a lot.
One of their all time Hall of Fame All Pro players,
(01:57:13):
Dante Hall, spoke out. He was very very critical of
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelcey. He was not oppressed with
how they've handled their frustrations. He said, I think Mahomes
needs to fall in love with the mundane. For five years,
we've been used to the big players to tyree to Kelsey.
It's time to you know, readjust when you're screaming and
yelling at your players that permeates negativity. If you recall
(01:57:36):
Dante Hall, one of the greatest all time punt returners
in Chiefs history. But after watching the cameras capture Travis
Kelcey on the sideline throwing his helmet and mahomes lamb
basting his offensive line, the Chiefs emotionally have not kept
their emotions in check, and Dante Hall noticed it and
called him out. How about that? People questioning the Chiefs
(01:57:56):
they've been a teflon team, Well, they win their division
eight years in a row. I guess you get their right,
but not so much anymore. Coming up? What kind of
brand new fool? And what my name? Keep it locked?
The Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well, that's right,
you heard the man. Bernie Fradle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Fraddle. We're coming youlive from the
(01:58:16):
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tire iraq dot Com Studios,
tiraq dot Com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection,
fast free shipping, free roodazard protection, and over ten thousand
recommended installers tyraq dot com the way tire buying should be. Well,
we've come to that time of the show. And that
(01:58:37):
time of week you see every Saturday night heading into
Sunday morning two am Pacific, five am Eastern. We have
a little fun because we realize that around this great
country of ours, and certainly around the globe, people well,
they sometimes engage in behaviors that cause you to really
(01:59:00):
and eyebrow. Sometimes these behaviors are well, they're comical, they're innocuous,
they're just kind of stupid and silly. Other times are
far more dangerous. Other times they can land you in
jail and get you in big trouble. But anyway, it's
slice it anyway, a characterize it anyway, define the event.
Every one of these behaviors leave you scratching your head
(01:59:21):
and asking yourself, what kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 7 (01:59:30):
So?
Speaker 3 (01:59:31):
What kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 6 (01:59:34):
So?
Speaker 2 (01:59:34):
This might be a first for me. We take you
to Bangor, Maine, and we introduce you to the inimitable
Kevin Gray, forty one year old Kevin Gray, who was
recently arrested on the theft charge in the past what
week or two? And here's what's distinctive about this. Now,
(01:59:55):
you've all taken lyft rides and uber rides or you've
all certainly been part of ride share, but what was interesting.
Police were called to the scene at the TJ Max
store in Banger, Maine, Friday evening after a ride share
driver reported that his passenger said he had warrants for
his arrest and he was planning to commit a crime
(02:00:16):
and steal from the store and even showed drugs to
the driver. Uh huh. So police were called. They showed up.
They identified this gentleman, this passenger in question as Kevin Gray. Said, Wow,
we hit the jackpot with this guy. There were multiple
warrants for his arrest. He was also a suspect in
(02:00:39):
a case from a few days earlier. An officer spotted
Gray as he came out of the store. There was
a bit of a brief footchase, but they got their man.
Here's what's interesting about Kevin Gray. He's got a real
body of work. This was the twelfth time he was
arrested this year. Police said Gray had seven sets of
(02:00:59):
pre viction bail conditions that banned him from going to
several specific businesses in the area due to the fact
he keeps stealing from these stores. But the kicker for
me forget all the other stuff because it's bad enough
as it is. But if you're on the way somewhere
and you are in an uber or a lyft or
(02:01:21):
a cab or some kind of ride share, do you
really announced to your driver you're on your way to
your destination so you can commit a crime to that?
I say, Kevin Gray, what kind of brand new fool?
Are you? Nicely done? Martin Chef, Kevin Wired, you're up next?
Speaker 8 (02:01:41):
Well, Bernie, I saw this story float across my radar
earlier this week, and I immediately said to myself, I
found my candidate for this week's brand new pool. So
we go to Saint Pete Beach, Florida, and this is
actually not a Florida man. This is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
man on vacation in Florida who was arrested after molesting
a manage he statue outside a Florida bar, and he
(02:02:02):
threw gator nuggets into the bar's dining area. According to
the Panelas County Sheriff's Office, Anthony Lessa of Pittsburgh was
intoxicated and became upset after employees at the bar told
him he had already paid his bill and asked him
to leave. Deputy said Lessa left the business and sexually
molested a plastic manatee statue in the parking lot. He
(02:02:22):
was asked again by an employee to leave the area,
at which time he became physically aggressive with the employee
and then threw Gaytor nuggets into the dining area of
the business. Deputy said Lessa fled the scene, but resurfaced
at the Postcard Inn, where he began yelling obscenities at
employees before being asked to leave from there as well.
So authority said he refused to leave, prompting another call
from the Sheriff's office, and he was arrested on a
(02:02:44):
charge of disorderly intoxication, and deputies did say nuggets were
found in his pocket as he was being padded down
as he was apparently saving some for the road. So,
Anthony Lessa, what kind of brand new fool are.
Speaker 2 (02:02:59):
You part of the country?
Speaker 1 (02:03:00):
Was this saying against Chef Florida.
Speaker 2 (02:03:02):
Florida Saint Pete? Okay, Well, the reason I ask is
I wanted to confirm it seems like each week, boy,
we something's always happening in Florida. All right, Patrick sweek,
I'm sure you got a beauty for us.
Speaker 12 (02:03:14):
I do, I do, and boys, we are heading to
a place that Kevin actually just brought up.
Speaker 1 (02:03:20):
It is Florida. Now it's not Saint Peter's.
Speaker 13 (02:03:23):
It's actually Tampa Bay, Florida is where the setting of
this is. Where we're actually in a local grocery store
where one man named John Balmer was wearing was doing
some stuff and was wearing a shirt. Now the type
of shirt you know how everybody will wear, like you know,
graphic teas or you know, sometimes some people like just
(02:03:44):
have to have to have a little personality with it,
like the weard shirt says, oh hey, look I'm with
stupid and then the other person puts, I'm stupid, you.
Speaker 1 (02:03:51):
Know, one of those fun shirts.
Speaker 13 (02:03:53):
Well, this guy should have been wearing the shirt saying
I am stupid because he was in line and wearing
a shit that says who needs drugs? No, seriously, I
have drugs on his shirt. Now, you know, that could
be a simple, easy, like funny thing. However, kind of
takes a bit of a turn. Was acting a little
(02:04:14):
weird and funky in these you know, grocery stores, you know,
just kind of a little out there. So police were
nearby ended up kind of finding reasonable cause to just
investigate him a little bit, ask him around, was acting
weird and what asked that? They asked him, hey, man,
are you okay? And he goes, yeah, man, I just
got something like what's in your pocket? Well it was
(02:04:36):
some leafy greens, and I don't mean the stuff from trees.
Speaker 1 (02:04:41):
I mean some marijuana and crystal meths.
Speaker 13 (02:04:44):
So he really did have drugs, and he outed himself
by wearing a shirt that said he had drugs. So
John Baumber was arrested in front of various grocery store
attendees for a possession of narcotics. So, mister John Balmer
in the Tampa Bay grocery store, what kind of brand
new fool are you, sir?
Speaker 2 (02:05:04):
That's outstanding. That's just good stuff right there, all all
the way around. Multiple multiple stupidities tonight, another rousing addition
of what kind of brand new fool you, which of
course allows us the second segue into our second favorite segment,
which we lovingly refer to as what my name? So
(02:05:27):
here we go. As Jim Lang once said, look it up,
Google it all right. I'm the only coach in the
National Football League to win four games with four different
quarterbacks this season. Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 14 (02:05:45):
Hank Stram, Hank Stram, I love it not Hank Stram,
former coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, won Super Bowl
four with the Vikings twenty three to six.
Speaker 2 (02:05:56):
How many times have we seen that great video? Just
keep matriculating the ball on the field. Boy, it's sixty
eight toss power trap. It's a good name, good name,
good name. There. I'm the only NFL coach, by the way,
he is deceased. God rest his soul anyway, only NFL
coach to win four games with four different quarterbacks this season.
(02:06:18):
Kevin Wyrett, What my name?
Speaker 1 (02:06:20):
Kevin? Don't confuse me with Wyired Stefanski.
Speaker 2 (02:06:23):
That's it Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns. Onward up. Word.
I wanted the second quarterback in PAC twelve history to
throw for four thousand yards in multiple seasons. Patrick Sweeker,
what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:06:42):
Who is Caleb Williams?
Speaker 2 (02:06:45):
Not Caleb Williams. But that's a good guess, And again,
extra points for phrasing your answer in the form of
a question. Allah jeopardy. Somewhere Alex Trebeck is smiling. Even
Art Fleming, maybe all right, I'm only the second quarterback
in PAC twelve history to throw for four thousand yards
in multiple seasons. Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:07:07):
Give me? Doug Flutey, Doug Flutie.
Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
I love it. Thirty nine years ago hits Gerard Falin
in that game after Thanksgiving as they upset Miami. Wow,
that was something good. Good dude, I love these names.
We're having a little fun with this, Okay. I'm only
the second quarterback in Pac twelve history to throw four
thousand yards four four thousand yards in multiple seasons. The
(02:07:30):
chef Kevin Wired what my name? Ugh?
Speaker 8 (02:07:33):
Going back in the machine? Matt Lioner, Matt Lioner, not
Matt and Lioner. But that's a pretty damn good guess.
I'm only the second quarterback in NFL history. Check that
in PAC twelve history to throw for four thousand yards
in multiple seasons.
Speaker 2 (02:07:48):
Patrick Sweekett, what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:07:50):
Who is bo Nicks?
Speaker 2 (02:07:53):
Not Bone Nicks? All pretty good guesses, though. It's actually
Michael Pennix Jr. Of your Washington Huskies.
Speaker 1 (02:07:59):
Ow question, you just did it.
Speaker 2 (02:08:01):
He just did it. He just accomplished it like two
weeks ago. Whenever. All right, good stuff, guys. We're moving
along though. As a quarterback. I've never missed a single
game in high school, never missed a single game in college,
never missed a single game in the NFL until this Sunday.
I'm out. Mark Ramsey, what my name is it?
Speaker 1 (02:08:23):
The blonde haired guy, mister Lawrence.
Speaker 2 (02:08:25):
You got it, the blonde haired guy, mister Lawrence. The
judges will allow it. Trevor Lawrence, also referred to as
Trevor Lawrence. We're gonna go deep into the cookie jar.
Mark Ramsey might get this one. We're gonna flip to baseball.
Why do we flip to baseball in the middle of winter?
Because that's why I'm the first player in Major League
baseball history. Here's a hint. Did it in nineteen seventy
(02:08:47):
nine to get twenty home runs, twenty doubles, and twenty
triples in the same season, Kevin Wyrett? What my name?
Speaker 1 (02:08:54):
Twenty home runs, twenty doubles, twenty triples in the same.
Speaker 2 (02:08:57):
Season, Yes, sir, Yes, sir.
Speaker 1 (02:09:00):
I'm just gonna take a wild guest. Dusty Baker.
Speaker 2 (02:09:03):
That Dusty Baker, that's a fair guess. His first player
major league baseball history, nineteen seventy nine, twenty home runs,
twenty doubles, twenty triples in the same season. Kevin Wyrett,
What my name?
Speaker 1 (02:09:14):
Why were to guess?
Speaker 11 (02:09:14):
So?
Speaker 6 (02:09:15):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (02:09:16):
I'm sorry, I'm an idiot. Good night, folks, You've been
a great audience. Don't forget to try this, don't forget
why not? Go ahead, don't forget to try to Sebi
Boles spaghetti. I'm hoping it enough for Shanky Green and
the catskills. I'm gonna go Ricky Henderson, Ricky Henderson. All right,
I'll repeat the question for Patrick Sweeka who's been waiting
patiently on the first player major League baseball history nineteen
(02:09:37):
seventy nine, twenty home runs, twenty doubles, twenty triples in
the same season. Patrick Sweaker went by name?
Speaker 1 (02:09:44):
Who is Mark McGuire?
Speaker 2 (02:09:45):
Not Mark McGuire. But I'm just proud of myself. I
didn't call on cavern third time in a row. All Right,
I'm the first player in Major League baseball history nineteen
seventy nine. I hit twenty home runs, twenty doubles, and
twenty triples in the same season. I'm guessing Mark Ramsey
gonna get this? What my name?
Speaker 1 (02:10:00):
I'm just gonna throw out Rock Carew.
Speaker 2 (02:10:04):
Good casses. He was a prolific hitter and that was
pretty much near his prime. Actually it was George Brett.
George Brett, I should have gone one more round and
given the pine tar.
Speaker 1 (02:10:16):
I don't think of him as a triples hitter, but twenty.
Speaker 2 (02:10:19):
Triples in her yes, look it up, folks. All right,
this is very recent. I just tied the rookie record
in the National Football Game for most catches by a
rookie tight end. Mark Ramsey, What my name.
Speaker 1 (02:10:39):
Mark Ramsey?
Speaker 2 (02:10:40):
Did it? Mark Ramsey? Not the right answer, but it's
a good quin. It's a good answer. I just tied
the rookie record for most catches by a tight end
in the National Football League. Patrick Sweego, with my name?
Speaker 1 (02:10:54):
Who is Sam Laporta? Sam Laporta?
Speaker 2 (02:10:57):
If you're a Detroit Lions eighty one? I'm not gonna
ask the question, just real quickly, can an interview guess
who did? He was a famous player for the Philadelphia Eagles,
and he had a very distinctive name. Okay, and he
did it many many, many, many, many, many many years ago.
Can anybody blowed it out? Take a shot? Anybody?
Speaker 1 (02:11:16):
Vincema?
Speaker 2 (02:11:18):
No guy, Hey, yes, that's a good one. Not vinchmply.
They made a movie about him for the Eagles, right,
nicely done, played by Mark Wahlberg. Anybody else want to
take a guess? Going once, going twice? You ready, guys? Hell?
Everybody kits Jackson?
Speaker 1 (02:11:33):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (02:11:33):
I didn't know that keimny liar from kick of Prussing,
Pennsylvania where they always started fighting proctologists of Johns Hopkins University.
I that's the up and coming post impressionist Vincent Van
Gold committee to College's gonna be a real head banger
going on down. There be a hold out of head cracker,
and they gave it them all to Herscha Walker Rose
a right football, Not that Keith Jackson. But his name
(02:11:56):
was Keith Jackson out of Oklahoma. You remember that guy?
All right? Ceedee Land just broke my Dallas Cowboys franchise
record for career receptions and yards. Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:12:12):
It's not Tony Dorset.
Speaker 2 (02:12:14):
Not Tony Dorsett, is correct, it's not Tony dor Set.
But the judges with a judgment, I'm sorry, the judges
won't allow it. I apologize, all right, ceedee Land just
broke my Dallas Cowboys franchise record for most career receptions
and touchdowns. Kevin Wyre.
Speaker 1 (02:12:35):
What my name, I'm guessing, Michael Irvin.
Speaker 2 (02:12:37):
Michael Irvin. Hello, everybody, Keith Jackson, brought to you by Wendy.
He's home with a double bacon cheeseburger. You gotta have one.
You gotta have one in all state. The gud hands people,
all right, God rescue, you know I got you. Guys.
Remember Keith Jackson, right of course? Of course, okay, because
he's been cashed for a while and he was kind
(02:12:58):
of from a different era too. Quick story nineteen ninety four,
Colorado's playing Michigan. That famous long pass to Michael Westbrook
who caught the ball and stole the game. Cordell Stewart
throw like ninety yards in the air and Michigan loses
in the last second. Well, guess who was on the
call that day. Keith Jackson. I've only been a member
of the media for like three months, so I'll be
like kind of gaga when I see famous people in
(02:13:19):
the in the booths. I walk up to Keith Jackson
before the game and I said, I'm mister Jackson and
shake his hand. I really love the way you talk
you we've been a talk funny. Well, we don't think funny.
That's by Keith Jackson's story. That's the job mark. Okay.
I have scored more points on my birthday cumulatively in
(02:13:40):
NBA games than any other player has scored on their
birthday cumulatively in the NBA games. Patrick sweeka with my name?
Speaker 13 (02:13:48):
Who is the go to the king Lebron James.
Speaker 2 (02:13:52):
I don't know if the judges can allow because he
ain't the gold but he is the king because he
calls himself the king. But we're gonna allow it because
he it is Lebron James. Names. Should we do one more?
Bring all my goodness? Yes we do, all right. I'm
(02:14:14):
a pretty good pitcher, and I pitched in Japan last
year and looks like I'll be pitching in Japan again
this year, just because you know why, Patrick Sweinker, what
by name?
Speaker 12 (02:14:22):
Who is not Yoshi Nooba Yamamoto. It's Trevor Bauer.
Speaker 2 (02:14:30):
Oh I love it. He is a pretty damn good pitcher, Okay.
And I'm not making fun of the guy. I'm not
weighing in. I just you made this thing a thing,
and it's staying a thing. I'll tell you what else
is a thing? Patrick Sweeky does a great job something
we call the Progressive Play of the Day, which of
course is brought to you by Progressive Insurance. How convenient

He brings us the progressive play of the day.
Speaker 15 (02:15:49):
Right down to the final second, and the Pistons have
won what ay game one twenty nine to one twenty seven,
attending the.
Speaker 1 (02:16:03):
Losing streak at twenty eight in a.
Speaker 2 (02:16:06):
Row, and courtesy of Pistons Radio Network, I had the
Pistons tonight or Saturday night plus six points. They've been
given an effort. Man, they scared Boston the other night.
They almost had Brooklyn beat It's the five logic that
you could lose twenty eight games in a ro They
did not want to lose that twenty ninth they would
have been the setting the new record for most losses
(02:16:29):
in a row in the National Basketball Association. They most
clearly did not want that record. Well, still got a
lot of work ahead of them. Man, they started out
two and one. Now they're three and twenty nine, and
it doesn't get much easier. So long way to go,
but at least a little steam off the can. Of course.
Patrick's report brought to you by Progressive Insurance to Progressive

They have a Progress dot Com. Okay, I've all the
midst of the turmoil and the Saturday night game and
what goes on in the world of sports. There's one
happy story. Come on, give it up to Joe flaccol
(02:17:12):
Dude's thirty eight years old. He's now surpassed three hundred
yards and four consent new games, first time in his
career that's ever happened. And he's been at the VP
and he's won a Super Bowl. And people are saying,
how was the guy at this age coming off the
couch after not playing for years putting up these kinds
of numbers. People ask Joe Flacco that people look at him,
(02:17:32):
they shrug their shoulders. They don't understand. Flacco's last great
season was twenty fourteen. His last goodyear was twenty seventeen.
He's considered irrelevant because during his three seasons in New
York they've planned out so much and New York turned
him down. But look what he's done this year. And
we're talking just in a handful of games. Thirteen touchdown
(02:17:52):
passes already equal or seed the total for five NFL
teams for the season jack Steelers, Titans, Panthers, and Giants.
Teen touchdown passes equal the Steelers Kenny Pickett's career total,
and by the way, it ranks twenty second on the
Browns career list already one behind who DeShawn Watson, who
(02:18:12):
has two hundred and thirty eight million reasons that Cleveland's
wondering what the hell did we do here? Flacker was
doing things at thirty eight years old. Thirty eight year
olds aren't supposed to do when they were just sitting
on the couch six weeks ago, and he's good natured
about it. Two coming up, we will bring you Chris
Prefet's World of Soccer. But first let's go back to
(02:18:33):
our guy, the chef, Kevin Wired with the.
Speaker 8 (02:18:35):
Latest Yeah, all the talk. Bernie was on the game
Saturday night in Dallas, Cowboys Lions were Dallas ends up
winning at twenty to nineteen after Detroit not able to
convert on a late two point conversion attempt. However, with
twenty three seconds, the Lions actually appeared to take the
lead on a two point pass to Taylor Decker, but
(02:18:56):
referee Brad Allen said that Decker did not report as eligible. Well,
the official Brad Allen thought that it was Decker's teammate
Dan Skipper reporting is eligible, so he said number seventy
as opposed to number sixty eight, which is the number
Taylor Decker war so when Decker caught that pass on
that two point conversion attempt, he was called for illegal touching.
They marched the Lions back five yards. On the second
(02:19:18):
two point conversion attempt, they had appeared that Jared gofflit
threw an interception, but Dallas was called for off sides
That gave the Lions a third crack at converting the
two point conversion. At that point I questioned why Dan
Campbell didn't just kick the field goal, but I digress.
The third attempt at the two point conversion saw Jared
Goff's pass fall incomplete and the Cowboys come away with
(02:19:38):
the twenty to nineteen of victory. But several in Detroit,
including Dan Campbell, not happy about how the officials handled
that sequence of events there at the end. As for
the college ranks, we saw an absolute pitiful bowl game,
especially from Florida State. Their performance Georgia completely rolls over
the seminal sixty three to three. Now, I know Florida
State didn't have anyone of no really playing, but after
(02:20:01):
they were snubbed to the College Football Playoff, I figured
maybe they might have a chip on their shoulder, and really,
I want to stick it to the committee, but they
just kind of decided to mail it in and Georgia
they're all too eager to take advantage in that sixty
three to three, winning the Orange Bowl. All Miss beats
Penn State thirty eight to twenty five in the Peach Bowl,
Maryland over Auburn thirty one thirteen in the Music City Bowl,
(02:20:21):
Wyoming beats Toledo sixteen to fifteen to win the Arizona
Bowl NBA, the Pistons ending their twenty eight game losing straight,
holding on to defeat the Raptors win twenty nine to
twenty seven. It's the Timberwolves over the Lakers, one to wait,
one oh six. Lebron James getting a bucket for the
Lakers toward the end, but it was ruled a two
point or a three would have tied the game with
(02:20:43):
a just seconds to go, but the Timberwolves able to
add a free throwt to that to win by that
final score of two one o waight to one oh six.
And College basketball number seven in Florida Atlantic upset by
Florida Gulf Coast seventy two to sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (02:20:56):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, chef, good stuff tonight
as always this time every week. Well, listen, we covered
all here on the Bernie Fryer Show. And whether it's
on the field or off the field, twenty four to seven.
Around the world they call it football, they call it soccer.
Here in the United States, there's always news. It's while
(02:21:17):
we bring you Chris Purffett's World of Soccer.
Speaker 3 (02:21:20):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama him
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
Speaker 16 (02:21:40):
Happy twenty twenty four, Bernie, Happy New Year. It's almost
upon us here as we sit here in the final hours,
the final precipice leading into the new year. It has
been a wonderful year here for the world of soccer.
Thank you as always to continuing our commitment to the
world's game here on the airways of Fox Or Radio.
(02:22:01):
It's been a journey, and let's talk take a little
bit of moment to talk about what that journey has been.
As you look back to the year that was twenty
twenty three and what it meant for soccer and the
world of soccer, and to look ahead to the year
that's coming, Well, where do you even begin to start.
There's so much happened in the world of soccer. I
(02:22:23):
suppose we could start with FIFA itself. We could talk
about the Women's World Cup, the end of the era
that was for the United States women's national team, as
they failed to make a three peat to stamp their
name into history as their veterans said farewell, like such
as Megan Rapino and the new stars of the women's
(02:22:46):
team have yet to really bring championship glory to really
stamp their name on the legacy of that team. Instead,
it was Spain who walked away with the trophy this year,
and their championship in their celebration really overshadowed by the
antics of Spanish Federation president Luis Riubiales and the kiss
(02:23:07):
that ruined it all and plunge that nation, FIFA and
really all of women's world World soccer into chaos until
finally he was forced from the spotlight in the men's game.
So much has happened, and I suppose we start with
the biggest name out there, the.
Speaker 1 (02:23:25):
Power of one man to change a nation.
Speaker 16 (02:23:28):
Lionel Messi, Yes, the man who won the blondieuor for
twenty twenty three as the greatest men's footballer of the year.
No surprise, there as he comes stateside. He leaves Paris
Saint Germain will get more on them in a second,
and comes to inter Miami to follow in the footsteps
of David Beckham, the partial owner of Inter Miami, and
(02:23:51):
becomes the face for the Premier Soccer League of the
United States, and they earned trophies this year. They did
earn the League's Cup in a face off between MLS
clubs and the clubs of Liga MX of Mexico. While
they failed to make the playoffs this year, they will
be a prime favorite for years to come. And really
(02:24:13):
Leonel Messi's bigger impact seems to be on the business side,
to bring eyeballs to MLS, to spike numbers on Apple
TV's streaming service, and bring some attention to MLS which
has remained still and is still a league and a
sport in this country that people have doubts about, especially
since we did this before with Pele. Remember for the
(02:24:37):
time being, however, the greatest player in the world plays
in America, and the Saudis had something to say about
it as well when it comes to their own stamp
because where Leonel Messi went to America, it was Christiano Ronaldo,
the other great of this generation who went to Saudi
Arabia as the country became a destination for totten top
(02:24:58):
names like Ronaldo and Kareem Benzema and neymar Men who
we have identified with representing football in Europe for so
many years, pushing the Saudi Super League into the spotlight
and the staggering amount of money that the Saudis throw around.
And we come to Europe, we come to the clubs
(02:25:20):
of UEFA. We come to the dominance of Manchester City,
not just in England in the Premier League, but also
in the Champions League, being the champions of Europe to
have five trophies in a year, adding to both of
those the FIFA Club World Cup, the FA Cup and
the Carabao League Cup. And it all came really with
(02:25:43):
the rising star of their young player Earling Holland, the
Norwegian phenom who was a goal scoring machine all year
long and remains one of their strongest pieces as they
look to try to continue their dominance into twenty twenty four.
But let's go to other countries. In Italy, a historic
title for Napoli, the legendary club that was once home
(02:26:06):
to the legendary legendary Maradonna, and yes, since Maradonna's time,
they had failed to capture the scudetto the trophy of
winning the Italian Syria, and they did with wonderful players
like Victor Ossiman and Kevichka Faracelia I Hope I said
his name right. In Spain, Barcelona rose from their financial
(02:26:28):
ashes to claim a dominant La Liga title, even as
they stamped for the first time a sponsor across their
stadium and across their jerseys. In Germany, the giants Bayern
Munich held on for yet another Bundesliga title, holding on
for dear life and tying in points against Borussia Dortmund,
(02:26:49):
their long rivals in the league. And in France, who
dropped out from being the top one of the top
five countries leagues in UEFA in twenty twenty three, falling
behind Portugal. It seems like the end of an era
for Paris Saint Germain, a club that has spent so
much and so desperately wanted not just French glory but
(02:27:13):
European glory, and chased for so long a Champions League crown,
and appears empty handed as Leonel Messi goes Stateside and
nam Our heads for Saudi Arabia, leaving them with Killian
and Bape, whose future, as we'll see for twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (02:27:28):
Remains up in the air.
Speaker 16 (02:27:30):
So as we can prepare for twenty twenty four, what
will the new year hold? Well, it's an even year,
which means it's an exciting year.
Speaker 1 (02:27:37):
In soccer.
Speaker 16 (02:27:38):
Copa America, one of the two great in between World
Cup competitions, is coming to the United States as they
will host, and it won't just be the South American
countries competing, but it will also be with them the
United States, Mexico and several other top nations from the
CONCACAF North American region, setting up for a very fun
(02:28:00):
and a very competitive tournament, and one that the United
States really has a chance to show how far they've come.
In the men's game, Euros waits around the corner in
UEFA and can England claim that title that has eluded
them for so long, And in the club scene, the
backdrop of the continued attempts to lift off the European
(02:28:22):
Super League remain. It doesn't seem to go away, and
it has pushed YUEFA to make changes to the Champions League.
One that will be coming here in the second half
of twenty twenty four, but most importantly, Bernie January first
opens the transfer window across Europe and right out of
the gate. The question is can Real Madrid make this
(02:28:44):
work a once again reported push and maybe a final
push to land the services of killing Embape on a
transfer Paris Saint Germain, the club that we know Mimbape
grew up adoring, that has wanted him for so long
to have that star. But can they pull them away
from the French giants.
Speaker 3 (02:29:03):
We will see.
Speaker 16 (02:29:04):
Happy New Year, Bernie, and to all those out there
in the world of soccer, celebrate well, celebrate safely, and we'll.
Speaker 2 (02:29:11):
See you soon. All right, Happy to you, Chris, and
it won't be long we'll be talking about soccer internationally
as the Paris Olympics or just a little over six
months away. Coming up, we wrap up the Bernie Frattle Show.
And by the way, a quick programming note. I will
be back on these air waves Sunday night in New
Year's Eve, eleven pm Pacific to three am, bringing in
(02:29:32):
the New year, sitting in for Ben Mallory. Plenty of
high jinks coming up, also very special guests to join
us to try to bring some perspective as to what
happened between the Lions and Cowboys at the end of
the game. I'm Bernie Frattle. We're coming to you live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio TIREC dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
(02:29:54):
on Fox Sports Radio. Up on the Bernie Frattles Show.
Before I go any further, I want to thank my
broadcast team. They've been with me since eleven pm Pacific
Saturday night from Los Angeles. Of course, Mark Ramsey, our
technical producer, Kevin ware at the chef on all the updates,
and Patrick Sweek a great job. Guys. Two of you
(02:30:16):
three will be with me Sunday night, and as I host,
Ben Maller, we've got some business. We've got a special guest.
It was crazy endings tonight in the Lions game. And
what bothers me is what the referees did was procedural,
was not a judgment call. Dan Campbell told people postgame
that the reason he was given that Decker wasn't eligible
is because two players can't report as eligible, even though
(02:30:39):
NFL Roll five, Section three, Article one says there's no
limit to the number of players who can report as eligible.
Let's welcome in our guests. Biggest thing to come out
of Cincinnati since Peter Rose, Roy Rogers and Hugh depold Beer.
It's the great Andy Ferman Grant Andy, Happy New Year.
How are you.
Speaker 17 (02:30:55):
Happy New Year? My idol, Bernie Froda. I can't believe
him in the same presence as you.
Speaker 2 (02:30:59):
Thank you, Thank you, Andy. I was really looking forward
to this conversation. I'll tell you why. Because you are
a great historian. You remember the Don Denkins your call
the nineteen eighty five World Series, Yes, Royals, So I
draw that comparison any because that was a judgment call.
He blew it. This was a lot different. I love
to hear your thoughts. You've got the floor.
Speaker 17 (02:31:19):
You know what, though, honestly, I would say this, as
far as the game is concerned, the drama was tremendous.
For a fans point of view, it was a great game.
Number one. Number two.
Speaker 9 (02:31:27):
I think that Dan Campbell tried to outsmart himself.
Speaker 17 (02:31:29):
Yeah, you could go back and look at this play
and say, yeah, with the twenty three seconds the remaining
in the game, this was the ball game right there.
But remember one thing he had the fake punt on
fourth down on the Cowboys twenty. He did that, it
was successful delay a game penalty in the fourth quarter
that also contributed to the loss. It's just the Lions
roles set to go for a fourth and goal on
(02:31:50):
the Cowboys seven yard line before the penalty force of
the settle for a field goal. He had three chances,
Dan had three chances at the end of the game.
Why not after the second one at least go for
the extra point and have your luck maybe with you
in the overtime. That's what I don't know. Getting back
to the play, it was ugly, it was stupid, and
it was bad. What's gonna happen Now they're gonna have
(02:32:12):
an investigation. Nothing's gonna happen. It's not gonna be transparent.
And the argument is going to be back again that
they should have full time officials in the NFL. It
always goes back to that.
Speaker 2 (02:32:22):
Okay, you covered a lot of good ground there. I
talked to my piefs in Detroit before I signed on.
Campbell's belief was they had him on the ropes and
rather than go to a full overtime session on the
road in a hostile environment, one play two yards. They
believe they could do it, and technically they did. But
you bring up a lot of good points, Andy, I
want to harken back to the investigation because you speak truth,
(02:32:43):
you believe there will be one. But there's not going
to be much satisfaction for fans, and.
Speaker 17 (02:32:48):
It's not gonna get turned over. I mean, they may
even admit that it was a mistake. They might do that,
and they'll punish the officials. They won't be able to
maybe officiate in postseason play, but big whoop, the game
is done over.
Speaker 9 (02:33:00):
Dallas wins.
Speaker 2 (02:33:02):
I'm of the belief they'll never be transparency for the refs.
You recall last season during the USFL, they had that
situation that when they overturned to play or it was challenged,
you could hear what the refs were saying. I don't
believe the NFL ever wants in transpiracy. You just pointed
that out. Where we go from here? How do we
improve the product? Though as it comes to referees, you know, it's.
Speaker 9 (02:33:23):
Very very difficult. Right now, Bernie, I'll tell you why.
Speaker 17 (02:33:26):
I think the advent of gambling right now creates such
a problem, such a cloud, a dark cloud over the
game itself, because when plays like this happen, when a
game is so close and the gambling aspect is right
there where everybody is so involved. And let's face it,
the NFL is in bed with gambling. They are, They
make money on it. It's a revenue stream for them. So
(02:33:49):
there's always that problem a bad refereeing, But b was
it done? Because there's gambling and points spreads on the game,
there's always going to be that doubt.
Speaker 2 (02:33:58):
You know that excellent points And as someone who covered
the Lions from ninety eight to eight, pre imposted saw
it All Barry Sanders last year then sixteen Rod Marinelli team,
I want to piggyback on a point. Have you amplify further?
Dan Campbell's gone a long way and changing the culture
from guys like Marty Morningwig who went overtime and said
we'll take the win and we'll kick off. How'd that
(02:34:20):
work out? So he has established a different culture. But
maybe Andy, as you pointed out his shorts aren't clean either,
is a little too bold for his own good.
Speaker 17 (02:34:30):
You know, I love the guy. I watched him on
Hard Knocks. I fell in love with that. I then
I mean I don't know him. He doesn't know me personally.
I'm a tremendous letter right I write letters to people
that I've written to him.
Speaker 9 (02:34:41):
Haven't heard back. Okay, I understand that I didn't expect to,
but just to let him.
Speaker 17 (02:34:45):
Know I'm in his corner. I support him. I think
he's great for the game. I think he's changed the
Detroit Lions image. You talk about culture that it's one
hundred eighty degrees, there's no doubt about that. But I
think sometimes you can outsmart yourself. And when he did
that fake punt, I said, oh my goodness, I'm scratching
my what are you doing. I mean, it was successful,
I get it. But there were three opportunities at the
(02:35:06):
end of the game, you know, after the first two
and look, that pass.
Speaker 1 (02:35:10):
Was a bad pass.
Speaker 9 (02:35:11):
Of the third one bad pass by golf. I mean,
at least go for the extra point. Throw you your look.
Speaker 17 (02:35:17):
Into a bag and say maybe we could take these
guys out in overtime.
Speaker 2 (02:35:21):
All great observations. And you're right, And even if that
pass had been completed, it feels like he'd have been
tackled prior to getting into the end zone. So glad
and you could join us. Andy, you're coming up next.
Tell us the folks. You got about a minute. Tell
the folks once you got cooking for your show.
Speaker 9 (02:35:36):
We got Bucky Brooks.
Speaker 17 (02:35:37):
I'll tell you what, There's no one who knows football
and sunning out better than Bucky. Played the game in
the NFL for five years. He scouts for Jacksonville right
now he coaches the game. He writes for NFL dot com.
You want to know anything about football, to me, it's
like going to class. It's like a graduate course in football.
And I love talking to Bucket Brooks for the three
hours on with him on Sundays.
Speaker 2 (02:35:59):
Any great players, my friend, Happy new year to you
and your family. Keep up the great work and we'll
look forward to listening to you when I sign off to.
