Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports rade. Well, that's right, you
heard the man. It's that time a week. My name
is Bernie Franawe com to you live from the tiract

(00:25):
don't worry, I'm getting to FAIRLEYE. Dickinson. You just wait
right there and hold that thought. I'm coming right back
to it. How many times have you heard me say
on these airwaves you can script everything but the ending.
And that's why sports continue to be the greatest reality

(00:46):
show ever invented. And yes, we don't have royalty in
this country. Our athletes are entertainers. They are our royalty.
And if you're not loving this March Madness tournament so far,
you're a first in line for a front lobotomy. And
you know, every time, every year this time I think

(01:08):
of the late great Jimmy Valvano. Because of his historyonics
his quotability. He brought fund to the game that's gone
all the coaches are bland giving us pre program danswers.
Enter Tobin Anderson. Hold that thought. Oh I'm getting it.
I'm getting to Fairley Dickinson. You just wait right there.
But this is, in fact the four year anniversary of

(01:31):
Jimmy Valvano and the great victory over Houston and five
slam a jama huge upset. Who who could forget Jimmy
Valvano running around the court looking for somebody to hug,
a very quotable guy. You saw what the refs did
or did not do at the end of the Memphis game.
Are you kidding me? You know, Jimmy Valvano once went
up to a referee and said, hey, ref can I

(01:54):
get a technical just for thinking something? The referee said, no,
of course, not Jimmy. Why he goes good? Because I
think you suck. That kind of personality is gone. Enter
Tobin Anderson. How about those Fairley Dickinson knuckleheads. I'm loving
this And in a second, I'm going to get to

(02:16):
the storyline here that no one is talking about. Oh yeah,
we can talk. We can ruminate about what happened to Purdue.
Although it's to write a passage the Mountain West. Every year,
they stink it up in the tournament. Of course, anybody
not named San Diego State Perdue always manages to underachieve.

(02:37):
My bracket's great. Thanks for asking. I Purdue not going
out in Sweet sixteen anyway, night Arizona going out in
Sweet sixteen. But I Digress as a team. Yeah, I
know you saw it. The Boilermaker shot nineteen percent from
three point land. They turned it over sixteen times. FDU
got off the bus. They threw a punch right and

(02:58):
produced face, put do on its heels and never let
the Boilermakers get comfortable. Purdue was horrible from three point range.
That puts it simply. And I know Zach yet he's
taking a beating. He had twenty one points fifteen rebounds,
right around his season averages, but his supporting casts not
so much. But give FDU credit because they bothered Perdue

(03:21):
with their defense. Purdue field really to get the ball
inside when it mattered because they couldn't get their offense
going against FDU's defense, which comes to the storyline in
my view that no one is talking about. First of all,
Fairleigh Dickinson last season won a mere total of four

(03:43):
games On Friday a year later, FU, they deliver the
most shocking upset in the history of the tournament. They
were down, well, let's put it this way, they were
twenty three and a half point underdog. And if you
wanted to Purdue at post I think you know, ten
thousand dollars would bring back a hundred how'd that work

(04:04):
on for you and any one percent of the tickets?
By the way, we're on Purdue. But here's where I'm
going with this. Fairley Dickinson probably in a perfect world,
should not have you even been allowed to play the
men's nca Tournament at all. Now why do I say that?
Just the facts? Man FDU plays in the Northeast Conference. However,

(04:27):
Fairley Dickinson did not win the nc Tournament. Instead, they
lost to Merrimac by one point in the title game.
Fairley Dickinson did not win their tournament championship, yet they
got to go to the Big Dance. Why because Merrimac
was not allowed to compete in this year's Big Dance

(04:50):
because of an NCAA rule that bans a program from
the postseason while it completes its four year transition from
Division two. The irony is Fairly Dickinson never shouldn't have
even been there. But if you make, if you graduate
from Division two to Division one, you get to wait
four full years, even if you win your conference and

(05:11):
win your conference tournament. As a result, Fairly Dickinson, which
finish as a runner up in the conference tournament, they
received the conference's automatic bid, and people couldn't remind us
fast enough. Fairly Dickinson was outside the top three hundred
ken Palm. Fairly Dickinson came in third place and what

(05:33):
many argue is the worst conference in the country, and
they only made the tournament because Merrimack was ineligible. And
you tell me if sports are not the greatest reality
show ever designed, and you can script everything but the ending. Oh,

(05:55):
by the way, they couldn't stop reminding us that the
Fairy Dickinson Knights. They were also the shortest team in
the tournament, but they got you took advantage of this
NCAA rule. They punched their ticket to the round of
thirty two and say hello to Tobin Anderson, of course,

(06:16):
winking a nod to Shawn Moore, who had a nice
nineteen point performance against Purdue. But Tobin Anderson and his
heartfelt interview post game on the court, which brought tears
to the eyes of Jamie Urdall. And what does that mean? Now?
FDU they're twenty one and fifteen. They played the winner
of the Memphis Florida Atlantic game tonight and if you

(06:40):
saw that, that was another debacle in and of itself.
I'm not going to waste my time going into that
because I'll piss off half the audience. And what does
it matter? You survive in advance. But that game didn't
exactly end, you know, in a way that's befitting of
what you would hope, especially Sports Alert if you were

(07:00):
holding a Memphis ticket. Now I was not, but I
did have Memphis in my Fox Sports Radio pool. But
there you have it. Now the next question will be
how far can fter you go in this tournament? You
know there'll be more bulletin board material. I doubt that
Tobin Anderson will say, you know, the more I look

(07:22):
at Florida Atlantic, the more I believe we can beat them.
But this is the greatest upset of all time in
my years. In my view, it took Look, it took
thirty three years for a sixty and seed to knock
off a number one seed when Maryland Baltimore County beat
Virginia in twenty eighteen. But it only took five years
for lightning to strike twice. Fairly, Dicketson stunned the country.

(07:46):
They beat Perdue. We'll be talking about this the rest
of our life. Sixty three to fifty eight. Unreal. They
beat Texas Southern and Wednesday Wednesday's first for a matchup,
and and and that's when the locker room proclamation got out,
and Tobin Anderson made a pronouncement that set the stage

(08:06):
for this upset tonight. He said, quote, the more watch
per Due, the more I think we can beat them.
But he didn't do it in a condescending way. He
didn't do it in a bullet bulletin board material way.
This guy is really a cool customer. And listen in
ten on the first eleven tournaments where we had such
a thing called the First Four when it existed, at
least one of the at large participants advanced to the

(08:28):
second round. This year we have two, Pittsburgh and now
Fairleigh Dickinson. We're gonna have a ton of March madness
stuff tonight. March madness, March madness and more March madness,
of course, and at midnight you saw the standings, we
put them out the game Ethan created. We resume our
trivia game at midnight. Ethan will remind you you can

(08:49):
start dialing in at Love forty five Pacific and we'll
get to some march madness. You know, odds and ends,
fun facts, your odds of filling out a perfect bracket,
and various paraphernalia you want to hear about. And at
the bottom of the hour, believe it or not, I'll
give you the formula that's predicted nineteen to the last
twenty NCAA champions and the attribute State possessed. I'm loving

(09:16):
what I saw the night, and it conjures up images
of the great Jimmy Velvano, who again the forty r
anniversary of North Carolina State beating Houston and five slam
a Jamma, and the great Jimmy Valvano running around looking
for somebody to hug. And I don't think Tobin Anderson
is going to have to do that. Everybody probably wants
to hug that guy. Coming up a mall, Shaw Vcent'll

(09:39):
join us. We'll talk about today's action and look ahead
the Saturday. There's some interesting games on the board and
some professional money coming in on. Some dogs will chop
that up. I'm Bernie Frado. Where company A line from

comany alive from the entire act dot com students here
in Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio? And yeah, there are

(10:23):
a few folks who will cry bad luck tonight, especially
in that Memphis game among others. Springing a gentleman you've
heard him on these airways before, with me correctly predicting
as we both did last August, the Raiders demand say
hello to a'm all show. I'm all, how are you, buddy?
I'm doing well, thanks, Bernie, how are you good? Good?
I want to really, first of all, any comments on

(10:44):
today's action before I dive into tomorrow's slate. You know,
I know this sounds extreme, but I think Purdue might
have to make a change with Matt Painter. You can't
be a sixteen verse one seed a team that didn't
even win their league. For people that are unaware, Fairley
Dickinson got in because Merrimack wasn't eligible for the Inswerdaboid

(11:05):
Tournament because they moved up from Division one to Division
two I'm sorry, from Division two to Division one, and
they finished sex in the Northeast, including in the conference
championship game, and then you go out and lose. I
don't care that there were twenty three points favorite, but
I mean, you've got the national player a year in
all likelihood and Zach eat. They've got a ton of
regular season success, But I just don't know how mentally

(11:27):
a program can overcome what they just went through today. Well, yeah,
and what you mentioned with the situation in Merrimack and
the conference they're in and Fairley Dickinson finishing third, not
even in Ken pomp top three hundred. That was the
centerpiece of my opening monologue. And let's not forget Produce
lost to Saint Peter's last year. So maybe they need
to stop scheduling teams from New Jersey even though it

(11:49):
wasn't their fault. No, you're listen. I don't think they're
going to fire them, but it's sure raises, it's sure
raises eyebrows. So I'm with you. I'm all with respect
to the rest of this late today, anything in particularly
stuck out to you personally, now, you know what, I
was impressed with the fight back that TCU had against

(12:10):
Arizona State, the inability to close out late. You know,
it was just a nice job by Damie Dixon's team.
Mike Miles was outstanding down the stretch. I know, it
seemed like the whole world that was on Kent State
didn't completely understand the affinity for that. But Trace Jackson
Davis was outstanding for the Hoosiers. They did a great
job in that one. As he goes for twenty four
and eleven, you know, Canadon State took care of business.

(12:31):
And then you know you mentioned as I was coming
on the Lord Atlantic Memphis game, nineteen seconds to go,
and I thought they made a slight mistake with Kendrick
Davis call the time out of even you don't get
past the half court line, you're fine. You get a
reset of the ten seconds. That's right. Turn The turnover
leads to an opportunity for Fau and then the rest
is history. Why he just threw that ball up Willie Nelly,

(12:55):
And of course that concures up images at the end
of the Virginia game as well, you know, back dribble. Yeah,
you're right. I'm with you on that one hundred percent.
And I would just say this march madness gets the
best to some people, right, and when he gets hot
and it's hard to breathe, you really sort to start,
you know, start to sort the men from the boys.

(13:16):
I want to look ahead to tomorrow because and you know,
in about ten hours we tip it off again here
with San Diego State. But the game a mall that
gets my most attention Saturday for wagering purposes is Princeton Missouri.
And I'll tell you why. So Princeton out classes Arizona,
even though they were four of twenty five from behind

(13:37):
the yard but a mall. Since two thousand and five,
there have been twenty one instances where a double digit
underdog is one out right the following game there were
only four and seventeen against the spread. I haven't laid
the wood with Missouri, but it was the only way
I could look if I do your thoughts on that trend? Well,

(13:58):
I think it's a great one. You know, perfect that
last year when Saint Peter's be perdue and then there
was that short line at nine and a half and
I said, how can this this number b at this point?
And we see in North Carolina blow out Saint Peter's.
I get everything you're saying in terms of four and
seventeen record. Here's the one area of concern. I have
you reference the inability for Princeton to shoot the ball
against Arizona. Missouri is the worst defensive three point field

(14:20):
goal percentage team in the SEC. If you're going to
have some success, I mean the Missouri Tigers and the
team you could do it against. We saw a Utah
State really struggle in that game. If Ashworth is shooting
the ball much better, I think they have an opportunity
to move on or funcus better. Utah State could have
won that basketball game and not. The Princeton is necessarily
a prolific three point shooting team. Were as good as
they've been in some of the years in the past.

(14:42):
But this could be interesting. I do think though the
athleticism could be a real challenge here. But then again,
it looked like Arizona had an opportunity. But it seems
to me there are certain coaches they get snake been
at certain times, you know. I know, Mark Pie's been
in two title games, losing to Carolina and moving to Baylor.
And then you look at Tommy Lloyd. You know, I
thought last year's team was far more talented than the

(15:03):
one they had this year in Arizona, but they went
back to backpack twelve regular excuse the conference titles, and
then they kind of go out without much of a
fight early in the tournament and to loose to Princeton
in a bracket that I thought was really manageable. I
thought they would match up fairly well with Alabama potentially,
but the Crimson Tide sitting pretty there. So I get
your point on Missouri here, Bernie. I don't know if

(15:25):
I'm completely ready to back them yet, but this is
what I can see where you're coming from. Yeah, I'm
not backing him. I will probably fire on the under.
I was asleep. It opened at one fifty one, is
down to one forty and a half. You bring up
excellent points about your breakdown a couple of other games
where it's my understanding sharp money is coming in. I
understand a lot of sharp money is coming in on

(15:46):
Penn State, and the points could catch them five and
a half against Texas. Your thoughts on that game them all? Well, look,
I've been yelling about how great Jail and Picket is.
The Cena transfer has been outstanding for Penn State this year.
But the one thing is Penn State to fends better
than they get credit for. And Shoesbury's team has been outstanding.
You know, Funk was I think he was eight for
ten in the last game against Texas A and M.

(16:09):
This Texas team is long, They're very tough with Marcus Carr,
Timmy Allen. I liked this team a lot tyres Hunter,
who transferred in from Iowa State kind of for under
the radar this year, still a very talented player, but
I don't think it could discount this team. The key
for me is not going to be Ticket. It's gonna
be Funk and Lundy Seth Lundy, the experience veteran there
for Penn State. If he shoots the ball well, Funk

(16:30):
continues to play the way he did against A and M.
I think penns Date's got a great opportunity pulled the upset.
It just feels like that momentum has turned into a
bit of an avalanche and it's rolling downhill right now. However,
I've got Texas among four other teams better in the
futures markets to win the national title. I think the
Horns are playing as well as anybody. You go back
to that revenge game against Kansas in aust They took

(16:52):
care of business comfortably in that March fourth game. Then
they get him again in Kansas City in the Big
twelve title game. This is a really, really good Texas team.
Think part of the reason they haven't gotten the credit
is because Rodney Terry took over for Chris Beard. Rodney
Terry deserves a ton of credit for this team that's doing.
And then Marcus Carr I thought even the terrific player
in Minnesota, and people kind of forgot about him when

(17:12):
he transferred down to Texas, and he has been outstanding
for their Horns. Now I agree with everything he said.
And Penn State. I'm not gonna be involved in this game,
but Penn State has been a cover machine for the
last three weeks, so I wouldn't want to get in
the way of a speeding train like that, especially the
way they shoot three so well. Another team that I
understand sharp money is coming on is Maryland catching eight

(17:35):
against Alabama. Your thoughts on that game. Yeah. The big
concern I have here is for people that maybe underwhere
Brandon Miller played nineteen minutes and goes over five from
the floor, doesn't score a point because he's got a
bit of a groin issue and we've seen that with
Marcus s Asster, Howland pop Wood. It could be. Look,
Alabama's outstanding, but they have in my money, what I
don't understand is Zach Eton's had a great year, But

(17:57):
why Brandon Miller gets overlooked for National Player of the Year.
He has been incredible. If you go back and look
at the game he had against his aggs, he was outstanding.
I think he's a really dangerous player. They need him.
Clown has been tremendous. Quarly is a terrific player. He's
been coming off the bench. Heears, He's done a great
job for this team. I think playing in Birmingham helps
them a lot against Maryland. But I was really impressed

(18:18):
with Willard's team's fight back against West Virginia because Bellan
has not played particularly well away from College Park this year,
but a good quality win. I believe Alabama wins this game.
I'm not going to get involved in the points in
this one, Bernie, because the problem with Maryland's you can
look up and they might be two for thirteen from
the three point line. They're not a great three point
shooting team under thirty three percent, and I think that

(18:39):
could be a prop against an Alabama team that could
potentially get hot. However, I would caution one thing with
a Crimpton tide. If you go back, not including the
last game that they played against Corpus Christie, they really
have struggled down the stretch. From the three point line,
they have not played particularly well. The defense has done
a good job like they did in the SEC Tournament.
But for me, when I look at it, this is
one I would proceed with caution. No, I'm with you.

(19:02):
I will not be involved in that game. Full disclosure.
I actually have Alabama winning in all of my bracket.
I just think they're the most complete team. They're the
most athletic team, and you've got to bring your a
game to beat them, and I think Maryland might put
up a fight and they might hang that number, but
there are better games. Go ahead and go ahead them all. No, no, no,

(19:22):
I agreed, I know they're better games. To bed, I
love what you were going to say that. Yeah, that's
the thing. I try to be as discretionary as I can.
And I check with some moles, and I think Brandon
Miller is okay. His groin is mild and because of
his youth. Now Sasser is a different situation. In Houston.
They're genuinely worried about him, and they've got a tough

(19:45):
matchup in Auburn Houston laying six, I think it's down
to five and a half. And again where that game
is being played in Auburne's backyard, I could only look
at the dog there, even though I'm not going to
be involved in that game. Your thoughts, Yeah, absolutely, Bernie
on my phone cut out a little bit the game
you referenced, Auburn Houston, Auburn catching six, five and a

(20:05):
half in Houston. Yeah, this is to me, this is
ridiculous that Bruce Prol's team got a home game in Birmingham.
I thought maybe Jordan, you know, well, no, I didn't know,
if you know on campus, if the arena wasn't available
tomorrow or what I mean. This is just absolutely absurd
to allow a team that's the nine seeds to play
what was the second overall team in the tournament's standings,
to have to come on the road here with Faster

(20:26):
banged up, Jamal shed banged up. It's a real concern
for Houston. Everybody seems to be on Auburn, and I
can appreciate where they're coming from, but you know, everybody
was on Kent State today and I you absolutely just
took it straight to the Golden Flashes. I've been high
on this Houston team all year. It's hard for me
to go against them right now. We'll see how Broom
does inside. This Auburn team could struggle at times in

(20:50):
terms of shooting the basketball. If they do, that could
be a real problem. And that's the one area of
concern because Houston, even when they're not shooting the ball well,
their defense is always going to be there. I like
Bruce Pros a coach in terms of what he brings
to the energy that team. But I'm going to stick
with my guns here. I've got Houston coming out of
this region along the Texas. I've got books, I've got
hug Just for full disclosure, I've got Houston, Connecticut, Kansas, Ucla,

(21:13):
and Texas to win the national championships. And you know,
to me, when I look at it, these are all
teams that that at various times throughout the course of
the season, I think it's a great matchup and I'm
hoping that's the Elite eight Brackett, but I would not
be surprised at Albernie. If when you're on your show
next if you're talking about tomorrow night, Houston got upset
by Auburn, I don't think it's under the realm of possibility.

(21:33):
Because of where the game is, it gives a huge edge.
You could feel it in the Iowa game. The crowd
was helping this Iowa Hawk, excuse me, the Auburn Tigers,
and I thought I had an impact. Yeah, athletically, Auburn
can hang with anybody. But what bothers me is which
Auburn team you're gonna get. The team that lost to
Arkansas seventy six seventy three in the opening round of
the SEC Tournament, there were four and nine down the stretch.

(21:57):
They scare me, I won't be involved, and you're point,
it's well taken. Your point is well taken because they're
athletic enough, you know, to get in the ring with anybody.
I'm all, I want to get you on again before
the NFL Draft. But final thought tonight, if you want
one game, you can bet tomorrow which one would it be?
You know, it's interesting. Bernie was looking over the board
and for me, I think I'm going to either end

(22:18):
up on Duke or the under. Between Tennessee and Duke.
It's one twenty eight on this total. Tennessee has starting
scoring defense in college basketball. They've been outstanding. Duke has
kind of hung their hat defensively, and without Ziegler in
the lineup, moves out with the torn acl for the volunteers.
I think it just changes how well they play offensively
and defensively on the ball. Sometimes this is gonna be

(22:40):
an interesting game in the post. Philip Holuski has been outstanding.
To me, I think there should be a lot of
fun to watch when you look at the matchups individually.
That Scovie has been tremendous for Tennessee all year long,
But I don't know if he's going to get the
type of looks that you're looking hoping to get if
you are Tennessee in this one. So this is one
that's gonna be really interesting to me in terms of
how it's played out. I'm gonna say the under here

(23:02):
one twenty eight, nothing overwhelming. There's there's no Miami Hurricanes
and there I was fortunate to win the Miami game today, Bernie,
but I thought at the end of Miami's ability to
shoot free throws to be crucial, and we saw that
in that game and in this game. Both teams ability
to defend I think could be key. Might look at
a first half under here at probably at about sixty points,
because I don't want to get into a situation where

(23:22):
there's a plethora of fouls late and then all of
a sudden you get taken over the one twenty eight.
That's right, that's great advice, just in a general sense.
First half, and there was a nice first half run
of unders these last couple of days. And you bring
up some great points about Duke, and you know, giving
their size and the way they're playing right now and
they're healthy, they're gonna be a very tough out. I've
got them actually in the final four. Them all great

(23:44):
stuff and enjoy your weekend pal. Thanks you too, but
I appreciate it. That's Amall show Visan, you've heard them
with me before, and couple of couple of good points
kind of buried in there about the risk of betting
a game under in a LGE basketball game. I mean,
I had that Michigan State out of today and it

(24:04):
was one thirty seven and a half and these knuckle
heads at USC were following twelve points down. They needed
about twenty points in the last two minutes and almost
got them, landing at one thirty four. But to Jamal
to Amall's point, that doesn't happen in the first half.
You can't go over time in the first half. You
don't have the same kind of following frenzy to extend
a game in the first half as you have at
the end of the game. Show many first half unders

(24:25):
less risky than full game under coming up. General reminder
for my tips last week and how they fare today
with respect to filling out your bracket and making subvents.
And oh, by the way, believe it or not, there's
a formula that has predicted nineteen in the last twenty
NCA championships. In March, Mannis and I will share that
with you, But first let's go to our guy, Kevin Figures,

(24:48):
who always molly wops the competition, all right, Bernie had
a plenty of plea of drama the second day, the
second full day, I should say, of the NC Double
A Tournament, the big story, of course, you guys disgusted
fairly Dickinson out of the Northeastern Conference, becoming just the
second sixteen seed to advance to the round of thirty two.
They upset one seed per Due sixty three to fifty eight.
Another late game action TCU in Florida, Atlantic, making layups

(25:11):
in the final seconds. They defeat Arizona State and Memphis respectively,
Indiana getting twenty four points, eleven boards, and five blocks
shots from Trace Jackson Davis. They beat kent States, Kansas
State beat Montana State seventy seven to sixty five, Kentucky,
Gonzaga and Yukon with victories. Miami had comeback victory over
Drake sixty three to fifty six in the NBA Mexic

(25:32):
Cleiba hitting a three pointer at the buzzer, leading Dallas
over the Lakers one eleven to one, ten thirty eight
points and thirteen rebounds for Joel and beat as the
seventy six ers dominated Charlotte, the Bulls a double overtime
victory over Minnesota, forty nine points for DeMar DeRozan fourteen
boards as well Memphis and overtime win in San Antonio.
You had victories for Boston and Cleveland and Atlanta who

(25:52):
defeated the Golden State Warriors, who have now lost ten
straight games on the road GSW hoops seven to twenty
eight road record season. All right, back to Bernie Frido.
All right, thanks a lot, Kevin. Before I get to
the formula, I teased nineteen to the last twenty champions
NCAA champions possessed. There are eight attributes that these champions possessed,

(26:17):
and I will give you what the commonality is and
each one. So last week I talked about when you're
going to be betting March badness. The real trendy group
think echo chamber narrative has been all that five verses
twelve seed narrative. I said last Saturday and last Friday.
I don't care for that strategy at all anymore. In fact,

(26:37):
over the last seventeen years, at trends around fifty percent. Well,
if you grabbed the twelve seeds. You lost all four
all four this year, and you know you gotta go
three and one to make money anyway. Or you could
pick your spots and you can listen to the group
think Echo Chamber. Duke, they were five. Well, everybody kept
talking about how great or A Roberts is and they

(26:58):
are a good team. But the last time they pull
it up set there were seventeen point underdog. You're only
catching six from Duke. This was a Mitch mat mismatch
from the jump. So that was what I had tried
to warn everybody from last week five to twelve narrative.
Put that in your hip pocket for next year. It's
not worth playing anymore. Everybody knows about it, and it's
played out seventeen years. The trends fifty percent all and

(27:20):
four this year. On the other hand, my favorite betting
tip requires patients and guess what, you're gonna get two
opportunities here. Here's where I'm going with that. Since two
thousand and five, double digit underdogs, they've one outright on
twenty one occasions. Now it's twenty three occasions. However, the
following game, those same dogs only three and eighteen straight
up four and seventeen against the number. Keep an eye

(27:42):
on this Saturday. You've got Missouri laying seven against Princeton.
Princeton was a double digit outright winner, a double digit
dog that was an outright winner over Arizona frankly outclassed Arizona,
even though they didn't make many threes. If history, if
history is erect, Missouri covers that game, those double digit

(28:05):
doog outright winners only four and seventeen. You got the
same situation now with Fairley Dickinson coming up Sunday against
Florida Atlantic. I believe Florida Atlantic here's opened up about
a twelve and a half point favorite. That's a lot
of points. Florida Atlantic's very athletic. Though, the question is
how much will left? Do you be celebrating? Right? You
just got to watch these things because over seventeen years

(28:26):
they pan out. I also mentioned when filling out your
bracket resists the years to pick four number one seeds
in the final four, It's only happen once in the
last thirty six years. It hasn't happened since two thousand
and eight. Guess what perdue right on schedule as a
number one seed. They go down. So there you have it,
all right, the formula I've been talking about, believe it

(28:49):
or not. Nineteen to the last twenty NCAA champions NCAA champions,
they have possessed these attributes. One they were a one,
two or three seed from a Power five conference. Two
they averaged more than seventy three points per game on

(29:09):
the season. Three they allowed less than seventy three points
per game on the season. Four they owned an average
scoring margin of margin of victory of greater than seven
cumulatively throughout the season. Five they faced a top seventy
five schedule. Six, they had a coach with six or

(29:35):
more NCAA Tournament appearances and at least one Elite eight game.
Seven they were either in the NCAA Attorney last year.
And eight they have at least one All American player
on their roster. Now, these are the qualifying teams that

(29:59):
fall under that outory heading into the tournament. And I'm
gonna be honest, Alabama doesn't qualify. Nate Oates hasn't, hasn't
been there, hasn't had six nca Tournament appearances. He's a
head coach at Alabama. I've selected Alabama in my bracket
to win at all, but dear Shear's qualifying teams are Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas, Marquette, Perdue, UCLA.

(30:28):
So it's not perfect, but it wasn't nineteen un at twenty.
The only time it didn't this didn't come to fruition
was nine years ago when Yukon won the darn thing
out right, So something that you it's just food for thought.
At the end of the day, I do believe this tournament,
more than than any other tournament, is far more wide open.

(30:49):
We're starting to see that because there isn't really the
one great team and when when you look at the teams,
you know, Houston's catter situation with SASSA and Alabama still
has a pretty you know, difficult things swirling over there
there there there their program with the Brandon Miller thing.
You just don't know how that's going to pan out

(31:09):
and how it's going to be uh played out when
when Alabama proceeds closer to the final four and it's
going to continue to be talked about and so on
and so forth. You get where I'm trying to go
with that. You just you just don't know, right uh
and uh and and you know now Brandon Miller has
has a little bit of a groin strain. So look,

(31:31):
everybody's dealing with something. This is not an easy tournament,
but it is sure incredibly entertaining. I am loving what
Fairley Dickinson did coming up. What are your odds are
filling on a perfect bracket? The lowest seed to ever
win the tournament? Who have been some of the notable
names in this tournament? And and and oh, by the way,

(31:53):
you know you love to bet this. This is basically
the Super Bowl again all over. Let's played out over
four days. But the one event that has the same
type of handle as a super Bowl is the March
Madness Tournament. So make way for March Madness super Bowl.
And I'll give you some stats that the American Gaming
Association laid out. Yes, we've got what thirty three thirty

(32:17):
four states online now that offer legal wagering, and boy,
everybody's taken advantage of it. I'm Bernie Fratto. Where comed
you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios?
Keep it locked or listened to the Bernie Fratto Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back at the Bernie
Fratder Show. Comed you Live from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio Studios, Tirek dot Com. My man Ethan Miller

(32:39):
created a great game off to a rousing start last week.
Ethan take it away. The phone lines are open, so
the bottom line is you can start dialing in right
now for the Bernie Fratto trivia game. It was off
to a great start last week. Ethan will take your
name in your location and he will will the first
five we'll get in and we will kicked that off again.

(33:00):
We'll rekindle that at the top of the hour. By
the way, you know, your odds of filling out a
perfect bracket forget impossible. They're already after two day two.
There are no perfect brackets. Before before the Fairley Dickinson
upsote overdue, there were still twenty two perfect brackets out there,

(33:23):
and there were what millions that are filled out. But
the odds are filling out a perfect bracket are lower
than obviously winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, even
having a bowl constrictor come through the pipes in your toilet.
They're all about the same. According to the NCAA. The
odds your chances of nailing every pick one and nine
point two quintillion good luck with that. By the way,

(33:47):
the lower seed to ever win the tournament eighth ranked Villanova,
not eighth rank. They were number eight seed, the Wildcats.
Will they took that. They cut down the nets in
eighty five. We'll never forget watching that game. They'd beat
a great Georgetown team coach by John to Us, and
I didn't think they had any chance. He did. That
was written up in Sports Illustrated. There was a whole backstory.
There's something he might want to google someday. By the way,

(34:07):
the very next year LSU they were the eleven seed.
They became the lowest seed to make the final four,
and of course George Mason in two thousand and six
repeated that feat as a VCU did in two eleven.
Interestingly enough, of all the people involved in this game,
only three men in history can claim champion status as

(34:28):
both a player and a coach. Joe by Hall, the
legendary Kentucky coach. He did both at Kentucky as a
player and a coach, winning the national championship. Bobby Knight, Yes,
that Bobby Knight of Indiana fame. He was a reserve
on the Ohio state team in the yearly sixties that

(34:51):
won the national championship. But he did it as a
player with Ohio State, Bobby Knight did, and as a
coach with Indiana, and of course the venerable Dean Smith
he did down the sidelines as the head coach at
North Carolina built that program into what it was. But
he also did it as a player on the court
as he matriculated to Kansas to three only three guys
in history to do it. Now we talk about this,

(35:13):
people had this fascination with number five seeds. No, No
number five seats has ever won a national championship. Butler
in twenty ten got to the finals. Indiana in two
thousand and two got to the finals, and Florida in
two thousand that was a great team with Udonis Haslemon

(35:34):
and Teddy Dupe and Mike Miller. Of course they were
beaten by Tom Izzo's Michigan State team. And if I'm
not mistaken when when Doug Gottlieb was at Oklahoma State,
I think they might have been eliminated by Florida. That
Florida team in two thousand, they were a number five seed.
They got to the finals, and that's a that's quite

(35:54):
a quite an accomplishment. All Right, we talk about how
fun this tournament is, you have no idea how many
people get involved. According to the American Gaming Association, eighteen
million Americans, eighteen million people they planned to bet on
the men's basketball tournament. And and that you know, that's

(36:19):
more people that you know bet on the NFL title game. Now,
believe it or not, one out of every four American
adults will have have some kind of money riding on
March Madness in some form. And compare that to one
out of five in the Super Bowl. So all in all,

(36:41):
I miss spoke. The number eighteen million means there'll be
eighteen many more people that planned to bet on the
tournament that didn't bet on the Super Bowl. And that's
saying something because that means about sixty eight million Americans
not only would they wager on the tournament, that's going
to add up to about sixteen billion dollars with the
b Now, the cool thing about this tournament there are

(37:02):
sixty seven games that are played over three weeks, and
I'm really looking forward to the regionals being in Las
Vegas here next weekend. But according to US an online
survey done by the American Gaming Association. They just sampled
random two thousand adults, thirty one million Americans. They will
play a sports wager online, okay, at a retail sports

(37:27):
book and a regulated market or sometimes even with a bookie.
Now some of these bets aren't you know, through a
sports book or online or with a service or a
faraway place or you know, offshore or even here in
Las Vegas. Twenty two million people their bet will just

(37:47):
consist of betting with their buddies. Hey, Joe, I betcha
twenty bucks San Diego State beats firm in tomorrow or Saturday.
That kind of bet counts two just in terms of
these statistics, in terms of the fact that American they're
so enamored with this event that is March Madness, that
everybody wants to have a little skin in the game,
even if it's just fun and recreation, which ninety five

(38:09):
percent of the time it is. Now that comes to brackets,
fifty seven million people will plan to fill out a bracket.
And why because March Madness has become maybe the best
tradition in American sports, because it is the most wagered
on competition. And when you see things like what happened

(38:30):
tonight with Fairley Dickinson beating per Due. I can't stop
thinking about that because again a week ago they lost
in their conference tournament and shouldn't have even been eligible,
but thanks to a loophole the NCA rules, or I
guess you really can't call it a loophole. It's if
you transition from Division two to Division one, you're simply

(38:51):
not eligible for four for four years. So Fairley Dickinson
comes in the backdoors at twenty three and a half
point underdog. By the way, ninety one percent of the
tickets were on Perdue. If you just wanted to bet
Perdue on the money line at post you do have
to put up ten thousand dollars to one hundred just
to win the game. How'd that work out? So what's interesting, though,

(39:11):
is not everybody who bets Americans in terms of you know,
they're folks who live in a legal sports betting market
thirty three states and by the way, there are three
other markets we expect to come on board this year. Betters,
believe it or not, they like Kentucky. It's the most
popular choice to win the national title. Almost ten percent

(39:33):
of all bets to win the National title or on Kentucky, Texas. Mr. Right,
Texas and excuse me right behind them. Well, obviously they're gone,
but Gonzaga, Ucla and Alabama are still, you know, alive. Now,
what's interesting is even though more Americans will bet on
this tournament more than any super Bowl, the survey that

(39:55):
was conducted shows that it will still when you get
to the final game, it won't nationally catch quite the
sixteen billion that would would have been projected to be
bet on the Chiefs Eagles Super Bowl. However, in Nevada
that's a different contrast. To give you an idea, This
last February, about one hundred and fifty three million dollars

(40:18):
was bet on the Super Bowl. But we're expecting about
seven hundred and nine million dollars in wagers on the tournament.
That is a significant amount of money. Yeah, it's all
in fun. And you say it's just a game. No,
it's not just a game. That's like seeing the Grand
Canyon is just a hole in Arizona. All right, line

(40:38):
up those phone lines. We pick up part two of
Ethan's and Bernie's Trivia betting game. Keep it locked. You're
listening to Bernie Fratto on Fox Sports radio for that's trench.
You heard the man the Bernie Fratto Show keeps for
rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frado. Where company
a lie from the tiract dot com studios here in
Las Vegas. Tiract dot com will help you get there

(41:00):
an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirac dot com the
way tire buying should be. It's midnight, Friday night on
the Left Coast. It's time for Bernie's Backyard Bunking Bets.
Ethan take it away all right, another week of Bernie's

(41:20):
Backyard Bunking Bets. This is week two. Last week was
a good week. We had one hundred points from everybody.
Nobody got the trivia right. I made the trivia a
little what do you call it a little more simple
this week, so we'll get right into it. You guys,
remember the rules. It's and by the way, I still
have one line open if anybody wants to call in.

(41:42):
I have one line open. Still four callers ready to go.
I have one line open if anybody wants to call in.
It's open. Now the rules are, I'll lay out a
trivia question I'll read it out to the caller. They'll
give their answers. They'll get seven seconds. After the seven seconds,
if they get it wrong, Bernie will get a shot.
If they get it right, we'll move on to the bet.
I'll read out the best bet for tomorrow. They'll give

(42:05):
their best bet plus their minus whichever favorite they want
to go with, or the favorite or the non favorite,
and then Bernie will give his m his opinion on
the bet. And then we'll go to the next caller,
so to go. Like that, and you got the standings. Yep.
Every Monday you can refer back to last Monday. And
the meantime, I'll tell you what Mark hit it, we got, questions,

(42:25):
we got crisis will come out on top. We're calling
on you. Let's see what you got. It's game time,
it's showtime. It's Bernie's backyard bucks and beats. All right,
another week of Bernie's backyard bunking bets. Welcome to another one, Steve.

(42:51):
Welcome to the line, goes Steve from Colorado. Yeah right,
how you doing? Man? Doing great? How are you guys tonight?
I think you're doing better than you're Denver Nuggets they've
been slumping yeah, I'm more of an eves Fand to
be honest, though, we're starting to get hot at the
right time, so I'm feeling good about that. There you go,

(43:12):
all right, take it away, Ethan. All right, Steve, last
week you finished with one hundred points. Let's try and
go for two this week. We appreciate you for calling in.
All right, that's all right, here we go. And which
city is the tennis Championship? Wimbled it in? Oh, that's
in New York. Correct? Wrong, sorry, unfortunately, order up your

(43:40):
strawberries and cream. It is, in fact in London, England.
Say not much of a tennis guy here. That was
definitely I would again. You were thinking of the US Open. Yeah,
immediately as soon as I made the guests, I realized
that was wrong. But at least I had a shot.
I've been to the US Open to you take the

(44:00):
subway to will It's point threat by Ment Stadium. Okay,
continue on, all right, we're gonna go, best bet, it's
gonna be all right. Here we go. We're gonna go
March Madness college basketball tomorrow. We got number five Duke
playing number four Tennessee in the second round at eleven
forty Pacific two forty Eastern, Steve, will you be going

(44:22):
with the Duke Blue Devil's minus three and a half
or the Tennessee balls at plus three and a half?
You know, I know that Tennessee kind of struggled a
little bit down the stretch plus from games, but I
still think they're a better team, and I'll take Tennessee
in the points. I'm gonna have to side with Steve there.
I like Duke to win the game, and I know

(44:43):
that it sounds like it's gonna make me a fish better.
But three and a half's a lot to give this
Tennessee team. He plays a very good defense. So when
four and one last week, we'll see if Steve and
I are right on this. All right, Steve, thanks for
calling in Yepe, he is over. Good night, all right
you too? All right? We got Jay from cod Jay.
How are you doing tonight? How are you doing great?

(45:05):
All right, here's what we got. We got we got
a trivia question for you ready, Ah, all right, Houston
Astros Jose Altuve is from which South American country? Columbia? Oh? Well,
actually he's one. He's actually he's from one of the

(45:27):
great hot beds. It continues to produce unbelievable baseball talent
that would be Venezuela. Oh nice job, Bernie. This guy
doesn't miss It's all right, I didn't. I wouldn't have
known it either. All Right, here we go. Um, we're
gonna do a bet. It's gonna we're gonna keep it

(45:48):
in March madness. We're gonna, We're gonna go college basketball tomorrow.
Number ten Penn State takes on number two Texas in
the second round at fourty Pacific seven forty Eastern will
be taking Texas at minus five and a half, or
you'd be taking Penn State with the points plus five
and a half, Penn State plus five and a half.

(46:09):
I think Texas might win, but I think Penn State
would cover its what the way I see it, Oh,
so I'm gonna have to be in agreement. Penn State. Uh,
catching the points have been a cover machine the last
couple of weeks. They shoot three like nobody's business. That
would be the only side I would look to. Although
I don't know that Penn State could went out right,
but the value to me is Penn State and the points.

(46:33):
That sounds like the best way. Yeah, all right, all right,
Thanks a lot, Jay, Thanks Jay, You're welcome. All Right, Next,
we're gonna go Poppy, Poppy from San Diego. How about
those Aztecs? They did it, Yeah, they did it, Bernie,
and they're gonna win tomorrow. Man. Last Friday when we

(46:55):
talked to the Saturday, they beat Utah State to win
the Mountain WIS Conference championship. It and then they beat
a pesky Charleston team, and so they're one win away
from the Sweet sixteen. All right, go ahead, Ethan, what
do you got from Poppy? All right, Poppy round two
for you. Let's get this one. Let's get this one.
PNT Park is the home of which professional sports team? Oh?

(47:17):
What was the what wasnt Parkami? Say one more time,
Miami Marlin. So I've actually been to PNC Park. It
was done by the same architect that built Comerica Park
in Detroit. I covered the Tigers for years, and I

(47:37):
like PNC Park much nicer than Comerica Park and Detroit
it opened a few years later, because it's the same
kind of structure, but it's more intimate. It's, of course,
the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. All Right, this guy's
money three for three. This guy, can you believe this, Poppy?
I believe it. Yeah, he's hot, break much. All right,

(48:03):
we're gonna do. We're gonna give you a bet right now.
It's gonna be We're gonna go to the NBA. We're
gonna do. The Philadelphia seventy Sixers are traveling to Indiana
the mar to take on the Indiana Pacers at four
ten Pacific, seven ten Eastern, but the Sixers are currently
minus six and a half. Will be taking the Sixers
at six and a half or the Pacers plus six
and a half. Oh wow, that's that's a tough one.

(48:25):
The Indiana Pacers just came up winning, and uh, you
know the seventy sixers are good and they really Oh man,
that look with the Indiana Pacers. Give me a six
Indiana Pacers. All right, I'm gonna have to go with
the road favorite here. The NBA trends in March, teams
on the road laying between six and ten points cover

(48:47):
about sixty three percent of the time. I think Philly
might wipe the floor with him. So that's my my selection,
Philly minus the six. All right, thank you for calling
him Poppy. Call in next. We've appreciate it all right,
thank you? All right. Coming to the line now is
Mitchell from Ohio. Mitchell, welcome, what's up? First time call

(49:07):
I We appreciate it. Yeah, all right, so here's what
we got. Wait a minute, what part of the hire
you from? Mitchell is a big state? Many Well, the
city next to the one I live in it's called
South Point, So I'm in the southern point of Ohio.
So you're down near the Kentucky border. You near Cincinnati? Yeah?
Well yeah, well they're about one hundred miles west of

(49:30):
May But yeah, are you close enough to have Skyline
Chili or gold Star Chili? Actually, I've been to Cincinnati
several times to some games and stuff, and I've never
had Skylin chilling. I hope nobody's listening in. You're not
missing much. All I go ahead, Ethan take it away?
All right, here we go. You're ready. Yeah, I wropped

(49:53):
the Wimbledon question, right, but I missed the other two.
It's all in fun, all right, this is this It
sounds a gred guy who would get this right? All right.
Rumble in the Jungle is known as one of the
best heavyweight fights of all time. When Muhammad Ali went
up against witch boxer. Was it George Foreman or yes?

(50:16):
There you go. All right, Mitchell, our first correct trivia
actually done one of the great one of the most
intense fights all the way back in nineteen seventy four,
and George Foreman was undefeated. I gotta tell you both
those guys almost died in the ring, and the build
up to that fight was unreal. But boys, it's out

(50:36):
there somewhere and on YouTube, I'm sure, and they'll show
it every now and then on TV. That was craziness, craziness, craziness.
And of course you trivia bust will remember Muhammad Ali
one a knocked out Foreman in the eighth round. But boy,
what an incredible fight. All right. Ali was an underdog too,
by the way, that night he was a four to

(50:58):
one underdog. But but I digress. All right, Bernie, you
didn't have to answer the trivia there, so we appreciate
Mitchell for that. All right, Mitchell, you have an opportunity
to go two for two or in two hundred points,
that's right, take the first two point, take first place
of the leaderboard. So here's what I got for you.
Um all right, back to college, bas We're gonna go

(51:20):
and march madness. Uh. Number two, Ucla takes on number
seven Northwestern at five Pacific eight forty eastern. Ucla is
currently minus seven and a half and northwesterns plus seven
and a half. Who will you be taking? I'm gonna

(51:40):
take Ucla, all right, I'm in agreement. I'm in agreement.
UCLA's top credit for Northwestern what they did Beta pesky
Utah State team the other day, and I knew or
check that Boise State team. Uh, but Ucla they're stepping
away up in class and ducally, this mccrowan coach team
looks loaded for bear. So I think Ucla can win

(52:02):
that game by double digits. All right, both on the
same team for that one. All right, Mitchell, we appreciate
you for calling. We hope Ucla covers that eight or
the seven and a half and we get our first
two hundred point winner. All right, Thanks Miratchell. Le'll see
you buddy, all right, all right, thanks? All right, our
final caller of the night, we are gonna go with Ryan. Ryan.

(52:23):
You're there, I am now Ryan. I didn't get where
you're from. Where are you from? Yeah? Saint George, Utah,
San Diego, California, hey beautiful. Hey, I Saint George is beautiful.
It's about a two hour drift from where I live
in Vegas, and of course San Diego is about a
four hour drive. So we're writing. I'm right in the middle.
I go through there every week, my Brandon, all right,

(52:45):
what do you got? Ethan? All right, we appreciate you
for calling, and we really do. Um. I got another
golf question. Bear with me, you golf guy. I'm not well.
Maybe you'll know this. I know Bernie will. So let's
try and get it. Here we go. Golf was invented
in which country? In seventeen sixty four? Oh, Scott war

(53:07):
there you go? Why there you go? All right? Another
where to go? Ryan? Hey? Thank you? All right? So
we're gonna go to the bet. Here's what I got.
We're gonna go back to the NBA. We're gonna go
Los Angeles. Clippers post the Orlando Magic to tomorrow at
three pm Pacific, six pm Eastern. The Clippers are favored

(53:30):
at minus seven. Will you be taking the Clippers or
you t taking the Magic plus seven? So I don't
plays an NBA? Just tell me did they play tonight?
Does the Clippers play tonight? Bernie, I don't think the
Clippers played tonight. I don't think the Clippers played to night.
Now you guys can look that up in the studio,
but I don't think they did. Okay, give me a sack,

(53:52):
give me a sec I'm looking. I should know that.
We'll tell you this. This is very similar to a
trivia to a betting question last week having to do
with the Knicks playing the Clippers on Saturday, and I
faded the Knicks and it ended up cashing in this
in this contest, But my reasoning was that the Knicks
would be looking ahead to the Lakers on Sunday and uh,

(54:15):
and they were, and the Knicks one uncovered against the
Lakers on Sunday. You have a similar situation. I don't
know if the Clippers played the night. You gotta look
it up. Clippers, Clippers did not play tonight. So there
where I was going with that is Orlando is in
LA to do the back to back at Crypto. They'll
play the Clippers Saturday and then they'll turn around and
play the Lakers on Sunday. All right, what do you
got there, fellow? All right, I'll take I'll take the

(54:36):
Clippers to cover all right going. Yeah, I'm an agreement,
although I got to kind of hold my nose because Orlando. Yeah,
let's just let's just keep it right there. You have
it all right, both of you guys taking the clippers.
Appreciate you for calling him, Ryan say Bernie first. I
was the first time caller, and I just love your show.
Thank you so much. Well, you're always welcome, Ryan, Thanks buddy,

(54:58):
thanks for jumping in. I want to make one thing
clear because some people asked me last week, and it's
a fair question. Maybe as great as great a job
as you have done, Ethan in promoting this and creating
this contest, some folks had the impression that the first
five callers last week would be the same five callers

(55:18):
every week. And are these going to be the same
five guys, I'm not sure everybody. Oh yeah, And so
it's open phone lines. Ethan will open them up every
Friday night at eleven forty five pm Pacific two forty
five am Eastern. And what you want to try to
do is be one of those first five. This contest
is going to last twelve weeks now. I think Poppy

(55:40):
was our only repeat caller from from last week was
Steve from Colorado last week as well. Yeah, we had
Stephen Poppy and I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. Everybody,
I m you can call in anytime any week or
Friday at eleven forty five pm Pacific. I'll be answering
the phone lines well. And the beauty of this contest.
It's going to go through all the way through up

(56:01):
until I believe Memorial Day weekend May twenty six. So
over the twelve week period, hopefully there's an evening opp process.
Maybe not everybody can get in, they'll have other events,
they won't have time to call on a Friday night,
or maybe there are going to be those folks that
are help bent to call on every Friday night. But
when you add it all up, it's welcome. We start
from scratch every week and whatever five callers we get

(56:24):
that week are the five that roll, and over the
twelve week cumulative period, they'll be an evening opp process.
So Ethan will have the updated standings after the results
of the bets this weekend and we'll tweet them out
Monday morning, and so we might have our first you know,
two hundred point winners as both Guide two out of
the five got the trivia questions tonight ethan any final

(56:46):
thoughts on the game. I appreciate everybody for calling in,
having fun and playing, and it's a pleasure. All right,
good dear. We will keep it rolling again next Friday
night Bernie's Backyard bunkin Bets. You answer two be a question,
you try to get a bet right. You get one
hundred points if you get the trivia question right, and
one hundred points if you get the bet right. I

(57:07):
believe all five people on the leaderboard from last week,
we're tied five ways right one hundred, but they all
had one hundred, one hundred, one hundred for everybody, one
hundred for everybody. And we're just getting started. So as
this goes, and as this continues, we hope to have
new fresh blood and of course some of the guys
who were dedicated in the first two weeks. If you
hustle and get in, there's no reason you can't continue

(57:29):
to get in. We'll see what continues to happen. I
wanted to clarify that though, because a couple of people
to last. Just because there were five callers last week
doesn't mean those are the same five every week, nor
are is the contest restricted to those same five every week.
Coming up, there's this, there's a there's a sixteen to
one favorite to win March Madness that nobody is talking
about anymore. And they had been immediate darling for seven

(57:52):
straight years? Might might they surprise you? Flying in under
the Radar, we'll discuss I'm Bernie Fratto. We're coming to
you Alive from the tiract dot Com studios, Fox Sports Radio.
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie
Frowner Show on Fox Sports Radio. Two NBA Insiders podcasting
twice a week to plug you right into the NBA

(58:13):
Grape five, all happening in only one place. This League Uncut,
the new NBA podcast with me Chris Haynes and me
Mark Stein join us as we team up to expound
on everything we're covering. Hearing and Jason. Listen to This
League Uncut with Chris Haynes and Mark Stein on the
iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts.

(58:41):
Back out The Bernie Frowner Show, Fox Sports Radio, Comedy
Alive from the tiract dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
We'll take you up to two am. Pacific five am Eastern,
and we are in the midst of marsh Madness see
rousing first couple of days, and there's a team out
there that has really, frankly become a household name. They're

(59:05):
sixteen to one to win march Manness this year, but
you're not hearing many people talk about them, which is
to start contrast from the way they've been bandied about
in recent years. Of course, I'm talking about Gonzaga, like
Gonzaga Bulldogs. Now, by definition, yeah, they're a mid major,
but come on, that doesn't They're not a mid major

(59:26):
when it comes to college basketball, and they haven't in
my view for the last twenty years. Given all their
tremendous accomplishments and the fact that they've been a fixed year.
The Bulldogs have had twenty four straight NCAA Tournament appearances,
and they're no longer the plucky upstart. They're legit. They've
played for two national titles in the last six years.

(59:50):
That's a powerhouse, not a dynasty, but it's a powerhouse now.
They haven't won one yet. They're sixteen to one to
win it this year. Part of what makes him a
power houses they have in their past had some great players,
and they have a chance this year with guys like
Drew Timmy the a four year starter, which is extremely

(01:00:14):
rare in modern college hoops. You gotta think guys like
Tim Duncan, Right, he's kind of got an offbeat personality,
he's got a quirky got you know, he's a very
talented guy. Right. The one thing in Zaga is missing
is a ring. And so when you mentioned Gonzaga and
Powerhouse in the same sentence, you're gonna get the requisite

(01:00:35):
kafas because they haven't won it yet, but boy, they've
come close a couple of times. Could they do it
this year at sixteen to one? That's the one thing
they're missing over ring. It's the one knock. And what
you would otherwise certainly characterize is a very impeccable run
by their coach, Mark Few And this year Gonzaga got

(01:00:56):
off to a little bit of a slow start, and
all of us sudden, the usual expectations that surround Gonzaga
sort of sort of faded away, and people figured out
same olegan Zaga. They come up short. They have high expectations.
Maybe they're coming up short. Finally catching up to them.
They're coming up short during the season this year as

(01:01:17):
opposed to in the tournament. But you need to consider
a couple of things, because the truth of the matter
is Gonzaga is live now. Full disclosure. I don't have
them in my Final four. I don't have them winning it.
But they're dangerous, all right. The Zags ranked number eight
and Ken Palm rankings, and they've won ten of their
last eleven games, and they did have a what you

(01:01:39):
would consider to be a very rough loss to a
pesky loyal to Merrymom team back in January. But since
then they're fourteen and one. And by the way, not
only did they lose, not only Gonzaga lose to Loyal
and Merrymouth, they lost at home that ended the seventy
five game home winning street. But what happened after that

(01:02:00):
that game turned out to be a real turning point,
and since then they're only lost down the stretch. They
had an overtime loss to Saint Mary's, a pretty damn
good team who just won their first they won a
tournament game, and they're heading into this weekend with a
shout to go to the Sweet sixteen. But Gonzaga got
the revenge, paid them back, beat them by twenty four
a couple of weekends ago in the which I could

(01:02:22):
that check that last week in the WCC Tournament Championship game.
Believe it or not, there are metrics out there that
list Gonzaga as the best offense in the country. So
they've gone from eighteen to one down to sixteen to one.
And there's real value in that bet because you can
always hedge back to lock in profits. And when you

(01:02:43):
consider a guy like Drew Timmy who's averaging twenty one
points seven rebounds a game, Drew Timmy and the rest
of the Zags, they might have a little bit easier
road this year than usual. If they make it through
the first weekend, they're going to get a UCLA team
but without their best player. And then if they somehow

(01:03:04):
get past UCLA, who they'd beat UCLA two years ago
in the final four to get to the finals against Baylor,
and that game took so much out of them that
overtime loss. They emptied the tank. And I'm not saying
they would have beaten Baylor anyway, but they were a
five point favorite to beat Baylor, and that was a

(01:03:24):
superb Baylor team. This is back in twenty twenty one.
But Gonzaga has beaten UCLA before. It's not all the
Roman possibility they could beat them again. Again, We're not
to that point yet, but if they did that, it's
entirely possible. You could see Gonzaga teamed up against Kansas
for Final four. Borth Now, yes, we're getting a way

(01:03:47):
ahead of ourselves, but why not Gonzaga at sixteen to one.
You've already seen how wide open this tournament is with
Arizona Purdue going down. Could someone come out of left field?
I give you my formula earlier in the show eight,
and I'll tell you what. I'll revisit that again later.
It predicted nineteen to the last twenty champions that possessed

(01:04:09):
eight attributes. Gonzaga actually made the list. Gonzaga, not Gonzaga.
Don't call him Gonzaga or you're gonna get people from
Washington coming after you. It's Gonzaga coming up. Why do
we love March madness so much? I'm gonna break it down. Yes,
it's against a lot of practice psychology without a license,
but they do it all the time. But first, back

(01:04:31):
to our guy, Kevin figures with the ladies, all right,
Bernie we'll start with that late slate of games on
Friday's nc DOUBAA tournament schedule, TCU getting a floater from
Jacoby Coles and the final seconds they come back and
defeat Arizona State seventy two to seventy. Indiana a seventy
one to sixty victory over Kent State. If you had
convincing wins for Kansas State and Gonzaga, flor Atlantic hitting

(01:04:52):
a layup with a couple of seconds remaining to defeat Memphis.
Of course, the bickupset of the day came in the
East Region. Sixteen seed Fairly Dickinson defeat number one seed
in Big Ten Champion per Due sixty three to fifty eight,
just a second time since the tournament expanded to sixty
four teams that a sixteen has defeated a number one
in the NBA. Cowrie Irving scoring thirty eight points, Maxie
Clayber hitting the three game winning three pointer as Dallas

(01:05:14):
beat the Lakers one eleven two one ten. Dallas has
won two in a row. LA's lost three of their
last four. Thirty four points for Jason Tatum in a
one twenty six to one twelve Boston went at Portland.
Damarta Rosen scored thirty nine or I should say forty
nine points, leading Chicago to a double OT went over Minnesota.
Tias Jones a triple double from Memphis. They get an
OT victory in San Antonio. You also have wins for

(01:05:35):
the seventy six ers, Cavaliers and the Hawks who beat
the Warriors one twenty seven to one nineteen. Back to
Bernie Frado. All right, Kevin, little commentary on March madness.
It's such a part of America. Now, You ever wonder
why we're so passionate about sports, and it's that time
of year match madness. And Brent Musburger coined that term

(01:05:57):
forty years ago, and it's stuck and it makes sense.
It's madness. We're glued to the TV screen. It's an
American thing, of course, but believe it or not, I'm
told that even in countries like Italy, people they're glued
to the TV as well because it's March madness, and
even though it's a nine our time difference. And that's
cool for me because I'm Italian. But why are we

(01:06:19):
so passionate about sports as a society. Why is it
that when we watch someone else competed at a high level.
We have very strong feelings about what we're watching. Even
if your favorite team, your favorite athlete through on the
losing side, you still crave more, whether it's positive emotions,

(01:06:40):
whether it's negative emotions. You cannot wait for the next
game less than nine hours away. San Diego State tease
it up again against Furman. I can't wait. You can't either.
We find ourselves living and dying on the ups and downs,
and all it to us is create nervous attention, our
nervous tension. Excuse me, and we're addicted to it. Now.

(01:07:03):
I've talked about this before. I've used baseball as an example.
In baseball, every fifteen seconds or's failure. The pitcher fails
to throw a strike, the hitter fails to make contact,
the fielder fails to make a play, the hitter fails
to reach base. It's a vicious cycle that repeats itself
over and over for three hours until someone wins a game.
What is it? Teach us? Failure is never final, and

(01:07:24):
you really can't reach the promised land without setback. And
nothing exemplifies that more than March Madness. Now we have
sixty eight teams, but at the end, twenty gut wretching
days later, only one remains. This whole addiction starts in
our brain. Yep, our brains. They contain these things called

(01:07:45):
mirror neurons. And when your brain seals fire, it's because
you're watching players battle on the court, a no look pass,
a guy breaking down the defense, a three pointer to
win the game. Outright, These neurons in observing this make
us feel that same emotion that the player is feeling.

(01:08:05):
This is true, it's science. It's almost if we're playing
the game ourselves. Yeah, you're living vicariously through the player,
but you feel that emotion. But that's not enough. You
want more. And it's because for most of the people
across the country, you're certainly people listening to the show.
I'm betting athletics who have been an integral part of

(01:08:26):
your life, probably since you were a kid, and no
matter how far you went in your athletic career, it's
never gonna be enough. And that's why our you know,
the way we love our athletes borders on hero worship
because people can relate to being a competitor themselves. Then
you transition into being a spectator, and what are you doing.

(01:08:48):
You're projecting your own hopes and your own fears and
your passions into these athletes that you're watching. You even
start to feel a bit of a kinship with these people.
You don't know them personally, but you feel like you do.
And then guess what happens. If you want to heighten
the experience, you put a bet on the game or
fill out a bracket. What does it do. It enhances
a viewing participation. It feeds your competitive spirit. And whether

(01:09:12):
it's a buzzer beater and this one and done format,
what it does. It turns unknown college kids into larger
than life heroes. You saw it again the night with
Fairleigh Dickinson. And it turns these programs that no one
heard of three weeks ago into heroes. And it turns
the celebrated programs into jealous bridesmaids. Now, I'm not going

(01:09:34):
to make fun of Purdue. It happens, I know. But
and then at the end you get the one shining
moment song. And no matter how no matter how faithful
or loyal people are their Alma maters or how close
they said to the court, you're never gonna it's always
gonna feel like you're a million miles away from the

(01:09:56):
from the people in the arena they're actually competing. This
is the rub, This is the primary foil of the
average fan, because only the athlete in the game, only
that man in the arena, can truly experience the magic.
And when you have to balance it too, it's difficult
for even the most well adjusted people. You should have
seen the uproar today this morning when there was a

(01:10:18):
big upset at the Westgate. Unreal people were going bananas. Now,
part of this drill comes from seeing what you would
call human outliers because they're they're performing athletic feats that
very few people can really replicate. These are at the
top of the top of the chain. Let's not pooh
poo the David Goliath aspect of these games, because every

(01:10:42):
time there's an underdog victory. I'm betting that people who
live vicariously through these teams, they use it as fuel
for their own lives. They use it as sort of
an inspiration for their own personal endeavors, maybe even athletically speaking,
because every time there's a buzzer beater reminded anything is possible,

(01:11:02):
and every time you see a team featured or chronicled.
You'll start to hear more and more of vignettes about
a hardship of a player who never gave up in
spite of the long odds, finally got on the floor,
finally made the team. And what's the conclusion, you see
Tom or Naldi do this. We're still the authors of
our own legacy. So we've got this month long phenomenon

(01:11:24):
known as March Madness. You've got an outcome that's unscripted.
You can script everything but the outcome, and when you win,
the winners get bragging rights. And it's a constant reminder
to people that are watching this from afar. You know,
darn well, if you watch the games tonight and Thursday,

(01:11:45):
you're witnessing something that is far from ordinary. That's why
we watch, That's why we care, That's why we have
always carried we always will. That's why, year in and
year out, March Madness continues to justify its existence and
it elevates its own what you would call frenzy. I
guess there are sixty eight teams. You can most people

(01:12:06):
can't name a single player in any team, or very few,
but it raises this emotion and again, given the advice
the advent of legalized betting, it amplifies these things even further.
It's fanaticism, it's the big dance. It's March Madness. Of course,
we've known that here in Las Vegas for years. In
the end, millions and millions of brackets coast to coast.

(01:12:28):
Four hundred thousand people have descended on our city this week.
And as I said at the top of the show,
we've got a betting handle here that dwarfs the Super Bowl.
It's got all kinds of nationwide appeal. It's got fierce rivalries,
it's got bitter defeats, and it's got those sensational victories
that make you feel like you're ten feet tall. Oftentimes

(01:12:49):
when it looked like all was lost. Many comebacks today,
and in the end, it leaves you with the feeling
that there always his hope for a better day. And
there you have it. In the end, March Madness is
life coming up. We saw a couple of fantastic upsets
these last couple of days. I'll share with you. I'll

(01:13:12):
bring it down memory lane some of the biggest upsets
in March Madness history. Remember Maryland, Baltimore County. I will
tell you that and many other ones. I'm Bernie Fraderware
Comedy Live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Keep it locktright here, you're listening to the Bernie Fratto
Show on Fox Sports Radio. I'm back on the Bernie

(01:13:36):
Fratto Show, Fox Sports Radio Company, Alive from the Entirect
dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Take kep to
two am Pacific, five am Eastern non Saturday night show.
I'm going to dive into the ten greatest Cinderella Stories
in March Madness. We may have a couple of Cinderella
stories for me, but not yet. You've got to win

(01:13:57):
a couple more games, which I mean remember just a
few years ago the Loyal of Chicago Ramblers. Hey, they
made it to the Final four. That was a hell
of a team. Now that's saying something top of the alt.
I'm gonna bring in the crew. We've had two colossal
upsets already, right, you had Princeton as a double digit underdog.
I'll class a very good Arizona team. Many people, I

(01:14:20):
believe someone named Joe Biden predicted Arizona would win it
all this year, and so did Jay Bill. It's like,
I respect a lot I did not have Arizona in
my final four doesn't mean I don't believe they're a
damn good team. And no one saw the Princeton think coming.
I sh didn't, most people didn't. Then fairly Dickinson tonight,
which which jogs my memory and top of the hour,

(01:14:41):
I'm gonna bring in the crew and maybe some of
these same upsets they'll agree for them has lodged in
their memory like it has mine for different reasons. But
the first one that comes to mind is was just
five years ago. That's when Maryland Baltimore County beat for
Genie's seventy four to fifty four. It up and before
tonight Perdue, but before tonight's upset, in which Perdue lost

(01:15:04):
is a twenty three and a half point favorite. I
believe this is the biggest upset in history because Virginia
had only lost twice by a total of eight points
that year. Also, Maryland Baltimore County earlier in the year
had been just destroyed or as Kevin Figgers was a
mollywop by Albany eighty three to thirty nine that same season.

(01:15:26):
So they were the first number one seed. They were
the first number sixteen seed to beat at number one
seed in one hundred and thirty five tries. So hey,
that's a pretty big upset. Now we have the second
event happening tonight of that nature with Fairleigh Dickinson knocking
off Perdue. Some of these upsets, you gotta go way

(01:15:48):
back on the cookie jar. But I mentioned at the
top of the show the nineteen eighty three National Championship
game in which North Carolina State Pete Houston fifty four
fifty two was not supposed to happen. That was the
famous five slam a Jama team with Clyde Drexler. They
had to know they had their own ESPN thirty for
thirty done about them and the NCAA tournament. Okay, that

(01:16:14):
that year there was all kinds of drama, But this
happened to be in the final game, right and you know,
NC State kept kept winning game after game. People just
kept they were waiting for them to lose. An NC
State had to win their ACC tournament just to be
invited to march Banners in the first place. This Houston team,

(01:16:38):
who was ranked number one, I would say, nobody saw
this coming and it was all set. It looked like
it was going to go over time, and you can
google the names Lorenzo Charles and Thurrow Bailey and of
course Jimmy Valvano, the great, the late great Jimmy Valvano
running around the court looking for somebody to hug. Tremendous upset.
Unreal did Bible of I should I should mention? Fermanova

(01:17:01):
Virginia was also another huge upset the other day, and
you can't forget that one. But just two years later,
after the nineteen eighty three National Championship Game, another massive upset.
In the nineteen eighty five National Championship Game, Villanova beat
Georgetown sixty six sixty four, and at that point that was,

(01:17:23):
without adopt, the biggest upset in college basketball history, and
one of the biggest upsets in all of basketball, many
historians believe, including into even the NBA, because Villanova was
an eighth seed. Now, look around your brackets, and you
know your eight teas playing nine seed in the first round.
But then if you get pass that, you usually get
a number one seed in the second round, So eight

(01:17:44):
teeds don't typically go very far. Villanova was an eighth seed.
They made it all the way to the final game,
and again they faced the number one ranked team in Georgetown,
and Georgetown was an unbelievable beast. That was a Patrick
Ewing team. They were physical, they were talented John Thompson.
No one thought that Villanova had a chance. But Villanova

(01:18:08):
one by two, sixty six, sixty four. Another massive upset
that when just talked about, well invoke memories from people.
Remember now the other ones aren't necessarily as historical as
it were. They were pretty big. And Florida Gulf Coast
you may remember them ten years ago, coached by the
great Andy Enfield, who's now at usc This is ten

(01:18:30):
years ago now twenty thirteen in the first round. This
is a fifteen seed versus a two seed. Again, Georgetown
was tremendous. Not only did Florida Gulf Coast flying up
and down the floor duncan right and left. They looked
like the number two seed and Georgetown looked like the
number fifteen seed. Florida Gulf Coast not only one. They
won by ten, seventy eight to sixty eight. And it's

(01:18:53):
not like a number fifteen hadn't beaten in number two
in history. What was your monk going about the game?
Is that Florida Gulf Coast It's not only won the
game by bye ten, but they'd only been a D
one team for two years and this was their first
time ever at the dance, and they went in fine fashion.
And I remember the following weekend, I think they stuffed

(01:19:15):
a very good San Diego State team, ran up and
down the floor dunk with him. I want to believe
they got to the I know they got to the
sweet sixteen. They might have even gotten the Elite eight.
Really a hell of a team, and who could forget
George Mason. In two thousand and six, they made it
to the regional final. They beat Connecticut eighty six to
eighty four in the regional final, an incredible run by

(01:19:36):
George Mason. They beat Michigan State in the first round.
Michigan State was ranked number six in the country. In
the second round, George Mason beat North Carolina. In the
third round, George Mason beat Wichita State. And then who
do they run into for the chance to go to
the final four? Connecticut, who was a number one seed,

(01:19:58):
Georgetown or check that George Mason beats Yukon eighty six
eighty four, and even though George Mason would lose in
the Final four, they sort of became this poster child
for great Cinderella teams. So there you have at Maryland,
Baltimore County, Villanova, Georgetown, NC State Houston. Those are the

(01:20:19):
two National Championship Games. Florida Gulf Coast George Mason. Now,
I've told the story about the great cal State Fullerton
team back in nineteen seventy eight. That was a hell
of a run two And maybe I'll retell that story
again Saturday night, about how Fullerton beat New Mexico as
a thirty point underdog, then somehow beat USF with Bill Cartwright,

(01:20:41):
three NBA players, they've been ranked number one in the country.
They get all the way to the Elite eight. There
were only forty eight teams in the tournament that year,
and they run into an Arkansas team with Sidney Moncrief
and Marvin delf and Ron Brewer and Florence and almost
beat him, took him to the final minute of the game.
But that's the beauty the tournament. The upsets. The upsets

(01:21:01):
aren't done, you know they're not. We've already had do
double edged underdogs went out right, and I expect more
this weekend coming up. We're bringing the crew Ethan Kevin
get their thoughts top of the hour, who some of
their favorite upsets have been, and maybe they can talk
about who some of their favorite memories of Cinderella teams
of all time. Since he won't be with me Saturday night,

(01:21:22):
this is Bernie Fratto. He'll listening to the Bernie Fratto Show.
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you alive from Las Vegas.
Keep it locked right here. Well, that's rights, you heard
the man. The Bernie Fratto Show keeps rolling right along.
We're coming to you alive from the tireract dot com
studios here in Las Vegas. Tireract dot com will help
you get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping for

(01:21:42):
your road hazard protection in over ten thousand recommended installers
tirac dot com the way tire buying should be. Well,
if there's one thing to know about March Madness, there
are upsets, crazy crazy upsets, and there are of course
Cinderella stories. Butler back in twenty ten and twenty eleven.

(01:22:03):
So we've got a savvy crew that are big sports
fans here that have witnessed a lot of things in
the past. Kevin, what are some of the upsets that's
stuck in your mind, maybe for personal reasons or just
general excitement. Well, a couple for personal reasons. I'm not
the biggest fan of Duke basketball, probably to the surprise
of very few. So there were a couple of standout upsets.
I don't know if you remember. I believe it was

(01:22:25):
twenty thirteen or twenty twelve. There was a Lehigh team
that defeated Duke in the first round of fifteen two
and some guy coming off the bench for Lehigh named CJ. McCollum,
who nobody had ever heard of back then, scored thirty
points off of the bench and they knocked off John Shire.
I think the current head coach of Duke was on
that basketball team, along with the Plumlee brothers. But that

(01:22:47):
was one of the teams that was highly ranked favorite
to one of the favorites to win the championship that
year and they did not do it. And then some
years earlier, Duke was also upset in the first round
by VCU. Shaka smart Well still the head coach at
VCU back then, and I believe Eric Mayner hitting the
game winning shot in that game, knocking Duke out in
the first round. So those were a couple of us

(01:23:08):
sit a situations that stand out to me. And then
the probable run that George Mason had in two thousand
and six because Bernie, that wasn't just a victory in
the first or second round. They made a run all
the way to the final four before they lost to
that For a team that ended up beating UCLA in
the championship, they beat Yukon with a bunch of NBA
players on that roster in the Elite eight. That was

(01:23:29):
probably one of the more exciting runs and probable runs
from start to finish that I've seen. Yeah, I was
with CBS in Detroit, CBS Radio, and I remember in
that George Mason run. You may heard me a minute ago,
the beauty who's who of teams. I mean when they
knocked off Michigan State in the first round. They were
losing their minds in Michigan. Then when it turned out
how good George Mason was right, they certainly were worthy

(01:23:52):
of the press clippings. I very much remember the CJ.
McCollum game. I'll tell you why. He scored thirty points
at night and he was a minimung boys and put
himself on the map and he was the star of
the NBA Summer League later that summer, and of course
I think that lit the fuse for him to be
considered a legitimate NBA prospect. And of course, as is

(01:24:15):
the case, unfortunately Lehigh was beaten the following week by
his Avier, and then the following year McCollum broke his foot,
but he became. His performance against Duke, I mean was
unreal because he'd been averaging twenty plus points a game,
but he put up thirty against Duke, and thank god
the Blazers saw his talent. He ended up being the
tenth overall pick. Yeah. Incredible. Now, a couple of really

(01:24:37):
good memories by you there, Ethan, What are your thoughts
on this subject? Yeah. One that comes to mind is
the twenty thirteen Florida Gulf Coast over Georgetown at the
Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The reason I remember this

(01:24:59):
so well is just, you know, I was just really
getting into basketball at that point in my life, the
love for the game, and I remember the lot what
did they could? It wasn't Lob City. They had some saying, Bernie,
do you remember the Florida Gulf Coast saying where they
just it was something to do with Dunk something, Dunk City,

(01:25:21):
something like something like that. I remember, Kevin, Yes it
was Dunk City and the Enfield was now at USC correct. Yes, cool. Yeah,
So I just remember that, and you know, everybody is
so excited. And the cool thing about upsets like this
it puts the colleges on the map. Like I knew nothing.
I didn't know Florida Gulf Coast before that, and then
I had, you know, a couple of people where I

(01:25:42):
graduated high school with ended up going to Florida Gulf
Coast because of the upset. So it's just cool to
see things like that, how sports can make an impact
in people's lives. Well, and the beauty of that stories
it came out of nowhere. I mean, they were a
twenty five win team Andy end Field, but during a
league with you know schools like you know, Mercer and Lipscomb,

(01:26:04):
and you don't you know, you don't hear much about Oh.
I think they were in the league with Kenneesa, who
played a great game to lose Xavier the other day.
But what impressed me about that team was ord phenomenal athleticism.
And I remember that they smoked a really good San
Diego State team by like ten and that put them,
I think into the Sweet sixteen. Oh no, that was

(01:26:26):
the Sweet sixteen. That put them into the Elite eight.
And then they lost to Florida and they came back
to Earth, but incredible performance. And you know, and during
the regular season they had played a couple of ranked teams.
They'd played Duke and lost by like twenty, and they
played a couple and they didn't fare that well. So
no one knew what to expect. So it came out
of it came on a left field there. And so

(01:26:51):
those are I would put them right almost in the
Cinderella category for me. The biggest Cinderella story in the
last ten years that sticks out more to me than
any is Butler because they got to the they got
to the final game back to back years and almost
beat Duke on that last shot Gordon Hayward. They beat
some great teams like Michigan State, and they beat Pitt

(01:27:14):
and I think they bet Wisconsin and Shelvin Mack, who's
not on TV, is pretty team. Of course, remember that
that that team was coached by Brad Stevens. Kevin, does
that team stick out to you at all? Butler are
there any other, um, you know, Cinderella stories that come
to mind like Butler to you. Oh, Butler absolutely sticks
out to me. I mean the Gordon Hayward shot from

(01:27:35):
half court that almost banked in. I mean that would
have changed history for sure. And you mentioned Hayward and
Shelvin Mack, who does a great job for CBS Sports
now is an analyst and studio for them. So yeah,
that one definitely does not get past me. Um, for
for sure, that that definitely stands out. Nothing else at
the moment from an upset standpoint or improbable run comes
off the top of my head at the moment other

(01:27:57):
than the ones that I mentioned a little bit earlier.
But uh, certainly some great ones that you guys mentioned
that you know, Ethanim talking about Florida Gulf Coast was
amazing and came out of nowhere or a team that
I think, if I remember correctly, Bernie didn't even have
that great of a regular season. They just happened to
get hot and win their conference tournament and they end
up winning a couple of games in the NCAA tournament.
You know, they were certainly under the radar. And let's

(01:28:18):
also not forget we would be very remissed. Now this
goes back to twenty eight, but Davidson School, no one
really ever thought of or heard of Steph Curry. We
gotta be honest, right, He's become the greatest three point
shooter in NBA history. That I believe is fair. That's
a team that started out four and six, then they
won twenty two straight games. Then they win their conference championship.

(01:28:40):
And what's interesting is in that conference championship, Steph Curry
got forty points that put them on the map. And
then of course they're going to beat Georgetown in the
second round, and I believe that beat Wisconsin and it
took the national champion that year. Kansas, Remember Kansas won
it all in twenty aweight. You guys remember that game,
and they kept filling the Memphis players and got to overtime.

(01:29:03):
Kansas only beat Davidson by two with Steph Curry. That
was a hell of a run. I'm sure you remember that, Kevin, Oh, yeah, vividly.
That was amazing. As Steph was unstoppable and never really
put him on the map, and people were questioning whether
he can make it in the NBA. He fell down
in the draft. I think he was what the tend
to pick by a Golden State and all his history.
But yeah, that Memphis versus Kansas was incredible. Memphis was

(01:29:23):
up double digits in the final minutes of that game
and they just could not make a free throw to
save their lives, and Mario Chalmers hits the three pointer
to send its overtime and then Kansas gets the victory.
That was one of the more memorable finishes for a
championship that I can remember. Probably not for what most
people would think like a buzzer beater, but the way
that Memphis melted down was certainly incredible. And it was

(01:29:47):
so funny because John Calipari press conference after press conference
was always questioned, your team struggles behind the free throw
lining he'd get all pissed off and go off on reporters. Yeah,
and coincidentally, ironically, the very thing that took him down
in the final game was her inability to make free throws.
I remember that like yesterday, and I can't believe this
is happening. One last thing about Steph Curry, and this

(01:30:07):
for me has always been reason number seventy nine. As
a former athlete, size means nothing. He was an under
sized point guard Davidson played thirty six games that year.
Steph Curry led the team in scoring in thirty one
in those thirty six games and when it mattered most,
including having forty in the conference championship game. Ethan, you

(01:30:28):
got the last stought on this subject. Yeah, I for me,
it was just the Lehigh Duke game. That's another one
that was really big because I was close by to
that and the Lehigh just Lee highs close by to
me growing up, so that was just a big one.
And CJ McCollum, and yeah, that's it. That's about it,
all right, Maybe that can be a trivia question next week.

(01:30:48):
A lot of folks don't know what state the Lehigh
University he's based in. I do, but you might. You
might just for giggles, but put that in a trivia question.
T three. There you go. All right, coming on, we're
bringing the crew back in. If you were listening to
my show last Saturday night, it happens every year when
we get to two am Pacific, it magically becomes three

(01:31:12):
am because of this little thing called daylight savings time. Well,
what's interesting is there have been multiple studies done in
multiple countries that now believe that daylight savings time and
changing the clock to give us an extra part of

(01:31:35):
daylight shifts up for Katie and rhythm and causes tremendous
disruptions to our body clock and the side effects in
some cases can be lethal. These are real studies. What
you'll share with you will bring in the crew and
get their thoughts as well. I'm Bernie Fratderware Company alive
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it
locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie Fradder Show

(01:31:57):
on Fox Sports Radio. I'm back on the Burn Fratto Show,
Fox Sports Radio Comedy Live from the tirect dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas. Just a quick he got
a tweet from a gentleman named Owen Cordry. He said,
trivia is too easy? How on earth did every one
of those not get answered correctly tonight? They went over

(01:32:17):
for five last week? So Ethan, there you have it there, buddy.
Keep an eye ont for Owen next week because I've
invited him to call in and a show us what
he's got. So but at least he was listening, so
we appreciate that. All right, daylight savings time, you all
know what it is. And here's the interesting thing. Setting
the clock forward means you, well, you lose an hour

(01:32:39):
of sleep, and people sometimes it takes a few days
to adjust. People are tired, and and so on and
so forth. But there's a growing sentiment that a lot
of people. According to a statement in the Journal of
Clinical Sleep Medicine, you don't all will know about that magazine,
Sure you do, Yeah right, I don't, but this is
their source. They write that quote, seasonal time changes should

(01:33:03):
be abolished in favor of a fixed, national, year round
standard time. Here's why. They claim that the tiredness of
losing an hour can be so disruptive in and of
itself that it actually spring forward, as it were, has
serious consequences. There was a study done in Sweden that
found the risk of having a heart attack increases in

(01:33:25):
the first three week days after switching to daylight savings
time in the spring. By the way, the tiredness that's
induced by the clock change. You know, you're used to
getting up at six thirty in the morning and Monday
rolls around the alarm sis six thirty, but your body
clock really thinks it's five thirty. That tiredness, they claim

(01:33:45):
is a main cause in an increase in trafficked accidents
the very next day and then Monday and started daylight
savings time. On Mondays. After the start of daylight savings time,
they say there are more workplace injuries and injuries are
of greater severity compared to the irregular Mondays. They claim

(01:34:05):
that the start of daylight savings time has even been
linked to miscarriages. Okay, all right, well it goes it
gets better. There was a study. A Danish study found
at eleven percent increase in depression cases after the time change,
and these continue but they start to dissipate gradually over

(01:34:27):
about ten weeks. And Australian study found that males suicide
rates increase the days after spring and after the daylight
savings time shift. They claim losing an hour of afternoon
daylight setting the clocks back to standard time, well that
you know triggers mental illness, bipolar disorder, all kinds of things.

(01:34:50):
I can go on. This is craziness to me. However,
these studies have been done and it does raise the
question should we just have a stand time year round,
Should we just keep it the same and not mess
with the body clock Kevin, have you ever given any
thought to this whatsoever? I absolutely have the perfect example
of that right floor right now is my wife. So

(01:35:12):
this past week has been a bit of a struggle
for her, and she attributes most of it to not
sleeping well because of the switch over to daylight savings time,
and it's gotten better progressively throughout the week before the
first couple of days. It's definitely a warn on her
and affected the way that she's slept. It hasn't affected
me personally all that much throughout the years, but I

(01:35:32):
prefer that we It's one of those situations where you
just pick one, pick one, and stick to it. That's
where I am, Bernie. I don't care which one you decide,
but heaven to switch the switch the time seems very archaic,
for lack of a better term, at this point, and
just really unnecessary. And to your point, I was not
aware the very scope of how many issues it can
cause for so many different people and so many different

(01:35:53):
walks of life. And if that's the case, why don't
we change it at this point? It's a good question.
I didn't do a whole hell of a lot of
research on this. I think there are a couple of
states that are year round, but for the most part,
and I think it was something that originated in World
War two or War One. And then again, I should
should do my research before I speak out on this,

(01:36:14):
but I'm with you. I think we should just keep
it the same all year round and not change it
backward or for it. I know it's nice in November
when you get that hour sleep back, but you pay
for it. And you know, these studies done in multiple countries,
so it's not just the United States, I guess, which
begs the second question, You think in our lifetime they'll
ever deliver keep it constant year round? What are your thoughts, Kevin?

(01:36:37):
I would hope so. And I'm trying to think. And
I feel like it was nationwide at least in the
United States that it was voted on, and it was
passed or at least agreed upon by the voters. But
it needs to be ratified by Congress whether or not
they want to change it. And for whatever reason, I
don't know the reason behind that. I'm sure there is one.
They haven't ratified or signed off on it yet, but
I feel like, if I remember correctly, at least they

(01:37:00):
in public has voted for daylight savings to be a
year round situation. They just haven't enacted it yet. Yeah,
and listen, we're not the only country. Daylight savings time
is used in seventy countries around the world and it
affects about a billion people. So, Ethan, your thoughts, what
are your thoughts on the whole daylight savings time phenomenon.

(01:37:20):
I could care less, but but I think that this
just shows that everybody should take naps in the middle
of the day. That's it's fun. Not everybody's able to
do that. Would love to if I could go to
the bathroom. I don't know what to tell you. Take
a ten minute snooze on the toilet. Words to Live

(01:37:43):
by Ladies and Gentlemen. That is Ethan Miller. There for
your listening pleasure. Ethan. Okay, Well, I'll ask you the
same question we asked Kevin. Do you do you think
that we'll ever have a situation where maybe we vote
on it, and we may I don't know that we
did or we haven't yet, But you think we'll ever
get to a situation where it just just become standardized. Well,

(01:38:07):
a matter of fact, I'm so clueless to what's going
on in the world that I'm an eight So I'm
an eight am riser and I woke up at nine
am last week? Was it last week? Was it last week?
This happened last week? It was last week? Thanks? It
was right in the middle of my Saturday show. Yeah, right, exactly.
You had to do two am twice or whatever you
can get to that. But so I woke up at
nine am. I get on the phone and I'm talking

(01:38:30):
to someone happens to be my mom, and I'm like, hey,
why is it wait, I usually wake up at eight am.
She's like, oh, yeah, no blank, because it's daylight savings.
I'm like, oh, okay. So more of the story is
we got in a conversation and she told me that
they're already talking about it in Congress, like it's already
a conversation to like sign a bill to cut this

(01:38:51):
whole thing out. M really, that's true. I know there
was a congressional hearing. I don't know, but I never
I know, go ahead. I don't know if it's actually
in Congress like like action, but like I know it's
like in conversation. It's a legit conversation going on in DC. Yeah,
there was a congressional hearing in March of last year,

(01:39:14):
twenty twenty two, and part of what triggered that was Mexico.
I think it already voted to adopt permanent standard time,
which they did in twenty twenty two. Now again I
asked the question, do you think will ever vote on
this or will it ever be you know, mandated one
way or the other go back to standard time. I
don't know the answer to that question, but I do

(01:39:35):
know this has been an increasing it's an increased topic
of conversation because there have been polls done, and these
are by legitimate news agencies, and their findings were about
one third of Americans say that they do not look
forward to these changes twice a year, and apparently, you know,

(01:39:57):
in a non scientific poll, apparently two thirds of Americans
would like to know eliminate them completely. Now we're going
to do this again in November, where you know, you
fall back spring forward. So November, you're all of a
sudden that I did this. Last November, my four hour
show became a five hour show. We picked up an
extra hour or two am, whereas in March. Now you

(01:40:18):
lose that hour. But twenty one percent of Americans completely undecided.
The thing is, it's not just you're finding that that
there are there's not only anecdotal evidence and research, but
we're finding that it's not just a simple inconvenience. I
like you mentioned with your with your wife, Kevin, we

(01:40:40):
all experienced that, right. It's not easy, it's it's it's
a it's a legitimate adjustment. And it's not just Monday.
It goes into Tuesday, it goes into Wednesday. It takes
several days. But what we don't realize is that legitimate,
reputable organizations continue to report serious negative health effects. These
are real numbers there there there apparently really are an

(01:41:04):
uptick and hearttics and by the way, teenagers who are
already sleep depth, you know, they have sleep deprivation more
than anybody else. That continues to exacerbate the problem. And
there are plenty of health effects, you know, in in
neurology and in pediatrics, even babies. Our circadian rhythms change.

(01:41:25):
Most people prefer standard time year round. The two time
shifts they jolt people, apparently, right, And there's there's a
thought that morning light helps your body start to sit
your natural rhythms, It makes you more alert, earlier increases

(01:41:47):
something this thing called cord as all, which is a
hormone that that that helps stress response. But the truth
of the matter is the studies around the world have
shown that, especially in the Western hemisphere. And I don't
know why this is crazy. This study found that residents
who are participating, and you know we live in the

(01:42:09):
Western hemisphere, right, it turns out more cases of obesity, diabetes,
heart attack, and breast cancer. I don't know how this
happens are reported during daylight savings time. Even certain cancers
are more so. So Look, we know that it was started.

(01:42:29):
I almost certainly not have to research this, but it
was started back in World War One, and it was
revisited in World War two, during or during the energy
crisis of the seventies to create more light. And I'm
not even sure why, but I think it's I think
it's run. It's course, I really do, because there's enough
ground swoil right now, including the conversation and Congress, to

(01:42:52):
suggest that the benefits do not outweigh the risks. Kevin,
you got the last word on us. Yeah, I one
percent agree with you, and I find few people at
this at this time, Bernie, and maybe I'm wrong. Who
are banging the table that we should continue this? If anything,
the loudest voices are there's no need to there's no

(01:43:13):
one need to keep this going on. We should change it.
So if that's the case, I really see no reason
why this should continue. Yeah, it doesn't really appear to
serve any fruitful purpose none. Ethan, you got the second
to the last word. You got the Actually you got
the last word on this, Ethan. I know we can
take a nap. Bottom line is uh, you know, it's
like it's like not everybody can do that. But but

(01:43:35):
I don't want to poop pool what you're seeing. Ethan,
you got the last word. Uh yeah, I mean, look,
if you can't take a nap, that's your problem, that's
your sketchule U spoken like a true Philadelphia I love you.
I'm getting it in, you know, a full day or not.
I'll find a time. Um yeah, no, I just I
don't care much. But um, if it happens to not

(01:43:58):
be a thing, cool with me. I'm in all right. Well,
one particular aspect of our society that's unaffected by d
lat savings. Time's chrisper Fetz World of Soccer, which we
get to right after our guy Kevin Figgers with the
latest alright. One of the biggest upsets in college of
basketball history took place Friday night, sixteen seeded fairly Dickinson

(01:44:19):
defeating number one seed in the East Region per Due
sixty three to fifty eight. Nineteen percent of the three
pointed tims did the Boilermakers make on Friday night. They
also turned the ball over sixteen times, just a second
time in history that a sixteen has beaten a number one.
TCU avoided an upset. They nach a two point victory
over Arizona State. Ford Atlantic made a layup with about

(01:44:40):
a second remaining to upset Memphis. Twenty five rebounds for
Oscar sheboy for to Kentucky. They defeat Providence sixty one
to fifty three. You have Miami overcoming a double digit
deficit to defeat Drake. Also at victories for Gonzaga, Yukon,
Kansas State, and Marquette and the NBA, Jason Tatum score
thirty four points leading the Celtics over the Trailblazers one
t the six two, one twelve forty one points. There

(01:45:02):
in a losing effort for Damian Lillard Dallas hdn't get
three point or a time expire to beat the Lakers
one eleven two one ten, double overtime victory for the
Bulls over Minnesota, thirty eight points for Joel and bad
for the seventy six ers, and a victory over Charlotte's
back to Bernie Frido Laker game. Kevin A, you're a
Laker fanner, Yes, sir, Anthony Davis. I don't know how

(01:45:24):
he's gonna sleep tonight. Threw up one ten, one oh five.
He commits a foul, Maxi Kleiber. I don't know why
guys try to block shots at the three point line.
It almost never happens. His body flops into him. Cleber
makes all three free throws one ten, one o eight.
Dallas fouls. Anthony Davis misses a free throw, they get
the ball back, he doesn't close out on. Cleiber hits

(01:45:45):
the three pointer. I'm not one, I'm not a Bacheler,
but that's not That's not one of Anthony Davis's final moments.
Did you see that? All? I did? And in a
pretty impressive performance for him all the way around. He
had a great game and was a big difference maker
for them. In the paint. But yeah, to your point,
the terrible sequence the last ninety seconds or so of
that game, and really the big issue for the Lakers

(01:46:07):
was they just couldn't make their free throws. It was
not only a d missing the one, but Austin Reeves
I think it was just three for six from the line,
so that they had a lot of opportunities to kind
of pull away in that game, especially in the fourth quarter,
and they just didn't do it. And so it was
a missed opportunity because they could have with a victory.
Everybody in front of them that played Friday night lost.

(01:46:27):
They were the last game on the slate, and they
could have been in a tie for eighth place or
seventh place, actually seventh place, and they weren't able to
get it done. So that's that, coupled with the loss
against Houston the other night when Anthony Davis didn't play,
or two huge losses in the standings for the Lakers,
very clearly a missed opportunity that's going to leave a mark.
We'll see how they rebound against Orlando on Sunday and beyond,

(01:46:49):
but boy, that's one they really let get away, all right.
At this time, every week. I will tell you that
soccer as an international sport came to light during this
last fall's World Cup, and the next World Cup will
be right here on our soil in North America. And
in between, there's always plenty in the news, and that
is why we bring you Chris Perfett's World of Soccer.

(01:47:13):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum. It's
all here in this report from the world of Soccer.

(01:47:33):
All right, Bernie, we begin this World of Soccer talking
about one of the most electric seasons I have seen
a player had in a while. And it is time
once again to talk about Earling Holland. Why are we
talking about Earling Holland. Well, it's because the Man City
striker had himself a five goal day this week. Yes, five,

(01:47:56):
we're talking soccer, I said, five goals, yes, and a
salute demolishing happening in the middle of the week year
as Man City took on RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
At the final result seven nil, and again five of
those five of those owed to the Norwegian striker Earling Holland.

(01:48:17):
This is now Earling Holland's fifth hat trick this season.
The last four coming in Premier League play Crystal Palace,
Nottingham Fours, Manchester United, Wolverhampton. Now Leipzig added to the
tally through at least three goals in each of them,
and was very close here for the double hat trick,
but his last goal in this game. Again, Leipzig also

(01:48:40):
surpass a ninety four year record held by Manchester City's
old Tommy Johnson had thirty eight goals in a season.
Now in thirty six games, Earling Holland has thirty nine.
They're not even close to being done yet this year,
and he's averaging over a goal a game. And this

(01:49:00):
game invoked immediately the memories of Lionel Messi, who scored
five goals against Bayer liver Khusen back in twenty twelve.
Holland is now the third player in Champions League history
to score five goals, the other being Louise Adriano for
Shaktar Donesk. It's not just the number of the goals
that's impressive, Burnie, it's the efficiency. Holland in this game

(01:49:21):
saw just thirty touches, which means do the map. It's
very simple. Every six times he's getting the ball he's
getting a bloody goal. In fact, he could probably have
gone for more. But Holland was subbed off in the
sixty third sixty fourth minute by man City manager Pep Guardiola.
He actually took him out and Holland was frustrated and

(01:49:43):
even said he wanted to go for the double hat trick.
He said, I would love to score the double hat trick.
So why did Pep do this? But Pep, this is
the fascinating thing about Guardiola, who just got extended here
with Manchester City. The man has been a fantastic manager
for this era Manchester City football, and he tells him
and Pep told told the media straight up that he

(01:50:06):
really didn't want to run Holland out there if he
needed to, but also also playing a few mind games
with a striker. He's saying this, if he achieves this
goal of a double hat trick at twenty two twenty three,
it will be boring for the rest of his life.
He won't have a target to reach in the future.
It's some rather particular mind games coming from the Manchester
City manager here. But I think Pep also mentioned that

(01:50:29):
he understands the criticism that Holland is coming under and yes,
Holland comes under criticism apparently, especially when Manchester City quite
frankly doesn't score goals. And I honestly cannot understand the
criticisms that there is this question that would Manchester City.
Is Holland the guy Manchester City he needs right now,
let me spell it out for you. Yes he is.

(01:50:51):
I don't know where Manchester City would be without Earling Holland,
but they certainly wouldn't be near the top of the
bloody table in the Premiers League, and they certainly have
been having these goals in the Champions League. The idea
somehow that Manchester City is missing out on some dynamic
part of their strategy on the pitch with Arling Holland
eating up space out there, is ludicrous and it needs
to stop. In fact, I might wish to turn this

(01:51:14):
criticism around on its head and look at the rest
of the Manchester City team, and so did apparently the
athletic who put up a fantastic piece this week as
they analyzed, you know, the tape and the numbers and
some of the scoring charts out there and found that
sixty eight percent of Arling Holland's runs are being supported
by his Manchester City teammates, and there's a good wonder.

(01:51:36):
I believe that maybe it's the rest of the team
that needs to catch up and play with Arling Holland,
because the last time Earling Holland had a one on
one with a goalkeeper was back in December twenty seventh.
Teams just aren't letting him get free anymore. When the
team sees Earling Holland, they are much like a fantastic
defensive end in American football. They're ganging up on him.

(01:51:59):
They're trying to make sure that guy does not break
loose because they know the damage will happen, and it's
onto Manchester City to support him on what he can do.
But in the meantime, every time Manchester City has a
bad game and the first fingers are getting pointed at
Arling Holland for some ungodly reason, and I think Pep
Guardiola understands this criticism and he's working too. I believe

(01:52:21):
there is a very special manager coach relationship between the two.
Pep is someone who really has pushed Earling Holland in
his very young age as hard as he can and
continues to do it. After the Crystal Palace match this
past week, where there was only one goal from Manchester
City and it was a penalty kick taken by Arling

(01:52:43):
Holland himself. But Pep told Arling, hey, you didn't play
well this game. We need you to play better, and
he responds the next game by going out and getting
five goals, and Pep understands the best way to shield
Arling Holland from the criticism is that he is taking
out out there from detractors of Manchester City, is to

(01:53:04):
make himself better, to make himself available all the time,
to get these touches and just blow the doors off
the opponent. And there's more evidence to my theory that
I believe these two have a very special relationship going.
We mentioned last World of Soccer that Earling Holland has
a two hundred and twelve million dollar release clause that

(01:53:26):
could be activated by a club like Real Madrid if
they pay that money to get him from Manchester City.
Well after Thursday's match, that clause may have changed. Reporter
Oriol Dominic on Caluna Radio revealed this that Holland's clause
was very closely tied to the status of Guardiola as

(01:53:49):
Manchester City's manager. Guardiola's a contract was extended by the
club back in November, which means now, as Dominic reports,
the clause is renewed, which means now that money to
get Holland out from his contract to pay that two
hundred twelve million that remains an effect now until the
summer of twenty twenty five, which means for the foreseeable future,

(01:54:10):
Holland isn't going anywhere. He's staying with Manchester City and
he is staying with Pep Guardiola for now. That's it
for the Champions League. The quarterfinals are set. We're looking
forward to the matches coming here in about a month
in the middle of April. Very interesting this weekend with
the Premier League. As of Friday, there were eight teams
in the relegation zone, twenty to twelve on the table

(01:54:34):
right now, all within and about three points a threat
of being bounced down out of the Premier League to
the Championship, including some familiar names like West Ham United
and Leicester City and Everton once again in trouble, the
old rivals of Liverpool of the Merseyside Derby. I'm gonna
be eating it all up this weekend, Bernie, and we'll

(01:54:55):
be back with you next week for the world of soccer.
So you heard Chris mentioned the name Arling Holland. Chris
introduced us to that name about a year ago. An
incredibly prolific goal scorer, I think Wayne Gretzky on the
soccer field. Google him Earling Holland. By the way, a
quick note, Kevin Webber tweets in the Senate approved quote

(01:55:19):
the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight savings time standard. Now,
this was done back in March in twenty twenty two. Now,
I mentioned on the show that I know that there
had been Congressional hearings, and apparently that's what the Congressional
hearings produced, the Sunsdine Protection Act. He said, the House
still needs to approve it before it's sent to President Biden.

(01:55:40):
He was delayed mainly because it was an election year.
Probably be up for a vote in the House later
this year. Will be interesting to see if and when
that happens. We were talking about, believe it or not,
the health dangers of daylight savings time and the studies
that have been done around the world that create serious
health maladies. Coming up, we wrap up the show and

(01:56:03):
what's the most unique aspect of Fairley Dickinson's upset tonight
over Purdue that's not being talked about. I'll share it
with you. I'm Bernie Fratto. Will come to you live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios, the tire
Act dot Com Studios. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Fratto Show on Fox Sports Radio.
We're wrapping it up on The Bernie Fratto Show. Come

(01:56:25):
to you live from the Tireract dot Com Studios Fox
Sports Radio here in Las Vegas. I want to before
I'm doing it further, I want to thank my broadcast
team back in Los Angeles, Mark Ramsey, our technical producer
of course, Kevin Figures on the updates, and Ethan Miller,
a creative our trivia game, among other things. Great job, guys.

(01:56:46):
They have been with me since eleven pm Pacific on
Friday night. Could not do the show without the teamwork,
turning all the dials, keeping us glued together, and keeping
the ship afloat and running smoothly. You know, last year
the Fairley Dickinson Nights one of the worst teams in
college basketball. They won four games, they ranked three forty
five and ken Pom that might be last. And they

(01:57:09):
hired a brand new coach, a guy by the name
of Tobin Anderson. A guy was zero Division one college experience.
They hired him in May. Ten months later. Tobin Anderson,
He's guided Fairley Dickinson to perhaps one of the greatest
moments in the history of the tournament. This is a
team they didn't win their regular season championship or their

(01:57:31):
conference tournament in the n EC, the worst conference in
the country. Wait a minute, did you just hear that right?
They didn't win their conference tournament. Hold that thought. I
want to come back to it. How did Perdue lose
this game? How do they lose to a team that
only won four games last year? Perdue only lost three
games this year? Well you could you know the simple,

(01:57:55):
the simplistic analysis. Boilder Makers shot nineteen percent from behind
the arc. They turned it over thirteen times. It seemed
like Fairley Dickinson got off the bus, punched the boiler
Makers in the nose, put Purdue on their heels, and
they never let them get comfortable. You've really got to

(01:58:15):
give them credit because they can complain about zach Ete
was twenty one and fifteen. But they really never allowed
Purdue to get into the offensive half court rhythm in
the second half that they wanted to. And what's interesting
is coach Tobin he made the statement which has now
gone viral. The more I watched Purdue, the more I

(01:58:37):
think we can beat them. But he didn't say it
in one of those you know, bulls and board material
type tones of voice. He was very measured. He was
trying to give his team confidence. He genuinely believed it,
and he said he thought the TV cameras around and
these are the kind of conversations coaches have with their
teams all the time, and there's never been any short
to Purdue doubters. This is a pretty damn good team, arguably,

(01:59:01):
you know, the National Player of the Year and Zach Yady.
But now they've got a body of work and I
think bat Painter is going to be into some heat.
And you have a situation now where this is a
second year in a row, they've been knocked out early
from a school in New Jersey. And you know the
comparison Shalmanad over Virginia and obviously Maryland Baltimore County County

(01:59:23):
over Virginia back in twenty eighteen, that was in a
tournament that Shalmanad would been. They beat Ralph Sampson in Hawaii.
That was one hundred million years ago, and it was
under the radar. And I guess if you if you
watch the way this Fairly Dickinson team hustles and plays
and are opportunistic, and they make shots, and they they
turn you over, and their transition game is very good,

(01:59:44):
and they're very assimon sound, and they make things difficult.
They're they're athletic. How do they lose eighteen times in
that conference? They finished third? Terrible conference. That's that's just
that's just a fair statement. Here's the one aspect to
this that no one's talking about. All Right, I've already
said to you, Fairly Dickinson won four games last year,

(02:00:06):
and now we're less than twenty four hours removed from
an incredibly incredible shocking up set perdue number one seed.
It's only happened the second time in the tournament history.
Fairly Dickinson plays in a conference called the Northeast Conference. However,
the Fairly Dickinson Knights put some respect on their name.
They did not win the NC Tournament. Instead, they lost

(02:00:31):
to Merrimack by one point in the title game. Here
is the part nobody's really talking about. Merrimack, however, could
not compete in this year's Big Dance because of an
NCAA rule that bans any program from the postseason while
it is in the midst of its four year transition

(02:00:54):
from Division two to Division one. As a result, Fairly Dickinson,
they only finished in the runner up in their conference tournament.
They end up receiving the conference's automatic bid, which, by
the way, got a bit of backlash room the Twitter machine.

(02:01:14):
One particular gentleman tweeted out to remember this, now, Fairley Dickinson,
he's outside the top three hundred in Ken Palm. It
not only came in third place in their conference, they
came in third place in the worst conference in the country.
And the only reason they made the tournament is because
is because Merrimack was ineligible. And by the way, everybody

(02:01:36):
was quick to remind us that the Knights, the Fairley
Dickinson Knights, were also the shortest team in the tournament.
And they're only there because they took advantage of a
rule and they secure a monumental win, and now they're
on their way to the round of thirty two. Give
it up to Tobin Anderson. Give it up to Shawn
Moore nineteen points. Tonight, Fairley Dickinson will play Florida Atlantic

(02:01:59):
because it's one point underdog on Sunday and say what
you want, but at least for now, the Fairly Dickenson
Nights are on top of the world and for the
rest of our lives, when we bring their name up,
it'll be a positive connotation. It's gonna do it for
the Bernie Fratto Show back on these airwaves eleven pm
Saturday Night. Keep it locked for the Great Anthony Gargano
