Speaker 1 (00:00):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio. Are you ready to witness?
College fans? Welcome to the biggest tailgate party in the nation,
Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by Fat MGM,

(00:21):
the gig of sports book. We're setting you up with
the information you need to watch your team win. Let's go.
We're here to break it all down. Let's go, Let's go.
This is Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by
Beat MGM. We're live from your tail game. Here's Brian No,

(00:42):
former Penn State All American, Rich Mornberger, and Picks Wives
lead Betty analyst Jared Smith. Oh, good morning, everybody. Welcome
in here. We've got a saucy day of matchups, getting
you ready for a full bladder of fall. And you
know what, I gotta be honest with the guys. I'm
in a great mood. I am very happy today because

(01:04):
name is gonna win rights terrible, They're gonna win our
thing today. Yeah, they're gonna win today. Thank you, thank you.
I don't know the res have been playing inspired football season,
just saying pouring cold water on him right out of
the gate. Rich, at least give him like you know,

(01:24):
the first hour, you know, to let them up there.
They keep it interesting for half. You know, I don't
even want to hear that. I don't want to hear that.
I want them to be up. I want the Irish
up by twenty one. Man, what a horrible year it's
been for the Irish. But it's not about them. It's
not about them to start off the show at least,
it's about these ranked versus ranked matchups. We've got five

(01:46):
of them today, highlighted by a top ten matchup number
nine U c l A against number ten Oregon. I
was thinking about this, guys, if you dive into the
quarterback matchup, bow Knicks has been pretty good. Bow Knicks,
you look at his numbers, twelve to touchdowns three Picks
has more rushing yards then Dorian Thompson Robinson, his counterpart today,
has eight rushing touchdowns compared to d t r s four.

(02:10):
So bow Knicks has played pretty well. The best way
I could explain bo Nicks, it's kind of like being
in a relationship and everything's going great. Your new girlfriend's
going great, but man, she cheated on like three or
of her ex's you know what I mean. Like that,
and it's like do I trust? Do I trust this situation?
That's how I feel with bow Knicks. Bow Knicks has

(02:32):
been pretty good all things considered this year, But can
you trust them today? Big stage ben but don't break defense.
I think you can trust them against U c l A.
But how do you guys feel about homebo Nicks? Who
is a different bow Knicks than Road boon Nicks. That's
such a good point. Yeah, homebo Knicks looks like the
more comfortable bone Nicks, especially after that pounding they took

(02:55):
to start their season the last time they faced the
ranked team. They're actually ranked now. The US are higher
than they were in the preseason heading into that forty
nine to three loss at Georgia, and bow Nicks has
looked better at home. Um, here's what I'll say. Uh,
they've won five straight since then. Uh, this offense has
scored an average of twenty five points per game. And

(03:19):
I'm a believer in bo Nicks. I don't know necessarily
if that means going against this U c l A.
Pass rush is going to be the easiest feat for
this Duck's offensive line. But this is talent on talent.
They've got a pretty good group up front and They're
going against a pretty good group defensively trying to get
after bow Nick. So this is gonna be a blast.

(03:41):
This is one of those games where everybody's talking about
the offenses in DTR and bow nix nix, But this
game will be one in the trenches always is rich.
You know me, Bud I, I am the firm believer
of trench warfare with these games, and I've got some
numbers in the trenches. But you made a really good
point about the Georgia game too. And when you really

(04:01):
dive into the box score of that Georgia game, it's
not as big of a blowout as the score indicates.
And that's why the advanced metrics sometimes can tell a
different story. You know, Oregan's defense actually held Georgia in
that game below the national average of yards before first
contract translation. Their defensive line wasn't getting blown off the

(04:22):
ball by Georgia. It was really Oregan's offense that set
their defense up in some really tough spots and and
that's why the score kind of got out of hand.
And also you give Dan Lanning, the defensive coordinator, the
benefit of the doubt. It was his first game as
the d C against his former boss, Kirby Smark, So
really tough spot in that game. And since that game,

(04:43):
the Oregan defense has been fantastic. The Oregan line has
been fantastic on both sides of the ball. I think
their offensive line, frankly is, is playing much better than
their defensive line. I think their offensive line is getting
a ton of push. And you're right, Bonix. At home,
it's it's like Netflix and chill. Right on the road,
it's like Netflix and picks. That's been the issue. And

(05:05):
so that you know, nine of the twelve three splits,
you gave Brian nine touchdowns no picks at home, three
three on the road, and and that lines up to
his career numbers thirty four touchdowns, four picks at home
throughout his career at Auburn and of course at Oregon
sixteen and fifteen on the road. So he's an average
quarterback on the road, much better at home. I think

(05:27):
the one of the main questions it boils down to this,
who do you trust more? Is it Bo Nicks or
is it U c l A's defense. And for me,
even though bow Knicks has had his issues in the past,
as you just laid out there, Jared, I think that
a bend but don't break defense on the road. This
is the first true road game for U c l A.

(05:47):
I think that's harder to trust than bo Nicks in
this spot. Do you guys see it that way? I do?
I I actually agree with you here. I will say
this though, that ben but don't break defense. The reason
and why they don't break is because they get crucial
third down stops. When you force Oregon, for example, into

(06:08):
a third and longer situation, that pass rush gets home
a whole lot. As a matter of fact, U c
l A currently has the highest pass rush grade in
all of the pack twelve. And if you look at
their North Texas transfer Grayson Murphy, he's a big reason why.
I mean, this guy gets to the quarterback more than
anybody else in college football. Are close to the very

(06:29):
tippy top if he's not the best at edge defender.
And then you look at Oregon. That's the strength of
theirs though keeping defenders away from bow Knicks and has
been all season long. Only one inten dropbacks will bow
Knicks actually see any pressure or get sacked. So if
if Oregon does a nice job of keeping Knicks clean

(06:51):
at home in front of the Ducks fans, and they
can extend drives and they can keep that Bruins offense
off the field. That's the ducks best chance to have success.
But you have to keep your quarterback on his feet
and they're doing it against an extremely talented pass rush.
So again, you know, I know him, the former offensive Ieman.
I promise I'm not going to focus on the big

(07:12):
uglies up front the entire show, but in this matchup,
that is the That is the singular spot to draw
your eyes too. Is are the tackles offensively winning against
the edge, And if they are, it's gonna be a
big day for the Ducks. I love it in my
notes to one of the biggest line and one of
the top live pressure is critical. I mean it really

(07:33):
is in this game and Oregon listen to big ugliest
for gonna have been anything. But they've only given up
one sack all year, So this is a team that
has it. And I know we talk about college football
and it's exciting to watch the big plays, but this
game is going to be played from you know, the
ground up, so to say, and there's a lot of
fun little nuggets here. I mean, this is the return

(07:54):
of Chip Kelly. I mean, I know Chip has been
it up. He's had a bunch of spots since Oregon,
but really Oregan was was where the funds started for him,
and really his name really started to put, you know,
on the college football mapping in the NFL. So there's
and and there's also an element of the Pack twelve
being back. How about this. This is the first time
we've seen a regular season It's happened a few times

(08:15):
in the conference championship game, a regular season meeting of
top ten teams in the Pack twelve since Stanford beat
Oregan twenty so it's been a full decade since we've
seen the Pack twelve at this level of Providence, and
the winner of this game, you could make an argument
has an inside track for the college football playoff. Pressure

(08:36):
is the name of the game here, bow knicks clean,
able to push the ball down the field or get
able to run the football. This is gonna be a
really good day, I think for the Oregan offense. If
those pressures get home and bow Nick is throwing some
picks and all of a sudden dtrs moving it around,
I could see you cel A hanging in this game.
But I'll be honest, I think the offensive line play

(08:57):
favors the Ducks here. I don't like that rhymes with picks. Yeah,
I don't like unfortunate. Yeah, it's like Cameron Dicker or
what isn't there isn't there a kicker that that is
named like miss or like shank or something that is
also a little bit unfortunate? Yeah, I don't. I might
be wrong about that, but it's like another word that
there isn't a guy like double doink? Is there, Johnny

(09:21):
Double I changed my last name to it was false
start man. That was a good call. At least it
wasn't holding. By the way, we got a matchup of
undefeated squads over here as well. We've got number fourteen
Syracuse against number five Clemson. Clemson favored by fourteen points. Here,

(09:43):
we get this kicked off right away at noon Eastern,
and uh, to me, guys, you look at Syracuse and
I know it's one of these deals where you're looking
at them with shifty eyes like are they for real?
Are they ever? Really? They haven't played a who's who,
not a gauntlet of competence. Shan they did beat NC
State last week nine played really good defense that was

(10:05):
against the backup quarterback. The thing that worries me, one
of them that worries me a lot about syracuses rush defense.
It sucks, It's terrible, and they haven't played much of
anyone yet they ranked in rushing success rate allowed. We
know Will Shipley and Clemson can rush it. D j
Ui as I call him d j Ui Ungola Lay

(10:27):
has been a much bigger factor with his legs this year,
a lot more designed runs. So if they can't stop
the rush, and we see that defensive line from Clemson
that hasn't performed up to expectations but can break out
at any moment. We never talked about a D line
breaking out. We talked about a wide receiver or a

(10:47):
quarterback breaking out. This D line could break out, and
if they do, it could spell doom for the Orange Today. Yeah, well, listen,
nobody expected Syracuse to be here, all right, um I don't.
I don't think a lot of people had Syracuse making
Bowl eligibility, let alone making it and then staying perfect

(11:09):
on the season to this point in this in the year,
um ben, it's the first time that they've won this
many games this quickly in thirty five years, it's just
been absolutely ridiculous. As a matter of fact, they should
if they win this game, cracked the top pen for
the first time since nineteen nineties six. I mean, so

(11:30):
this isn't one of those storied programs out there for
the Orange who've had a tremendous amount of success, but lately,
I mean obviously in their their distant past they have
And yeah, you're absolutely right. This running attack between Shawn
Tucker out of the backfield and Garrett Trader has been
so potent. But Clemson, my goodness, defensively, they feast on

(11:51):
opponents run games. I mean, they are really efficient, uh
in the box making tackles there. Their front seven is
is lights out. However, they do miss a lot of
tackles in the open field. That's something to key on.
If they can get playmakers, meaning the Orange can get
playmakers into the open field, can be a different kind
of game for Clemson's defense. So that's what I would

(12:13):
do if I were scheming against the Tigers. But this guy,
Keith McGuire, he's that dude at the heart of this
Clemson defense. He's a tackle machine. I don't really give
the Orange much of a chance today. This is the
first real, real test that they've had this season. But

(12:33):
I can't wait to watch it because You've got two
undefeated and one's very unlikely another is very likely to
this point in the season to be undefeated. Yeah, rich
you you you hit the nail on the head. Twenty
four miss tackles last week against Florida State UM and
fifty six of their running plays game five or more

(12:53):
yards against that Clemson defense. And Florida State was really
banged up last week. So the optics in this game
are fascinating. You you mentioned that Syracuse didn't expect to
be here yet I don't even think Dino Weber has
expected them to be here. He came out in his
press conference this week and you know, basically gave the
team a pat on the back for reaching Bowl eligibility.
And I'm thinking to myself, coach, you're six and oh

(13:15):
and you're playing Clemson this week. Bowl eligibility should be
the last thing on your mind. And again, I think
it's because of the expectations. This was a win total
of three and a half for the Orange this year.
They have well exceeded and pretty much doubled the expectation already.
And we're already in only in week eight, so it's
been a road of of prosperity, and we'll see if

(13:37):
the prosperity continues. Line here trending towards Clemson hit fourteen
key number. Maybe it gets through fourteen. I saw fourteen
and a half pop up at some point, but I'm curious.
We talked about the Clemson defense, and it's very important,
and I'll get to this hilarious quote by their defensive
coordinator Nick Eason in a minute, but I think the
Clemson offense with DJU deserves a little bit of love

(13:58):
because we thought come into this season it was gonna
be defense, defense, defense. Dj US numbers are up across
the board, all of the analytical metrics are up, turnover
worthy plays are down. He's more dangerous as a runner.
He has become a very good quarterback, and I think
that is gonna matter in this game because Syracuse plays
this light box this three three five, So we'll see

(14:20):
if the running game sets up the passing game for
d G. You but it all starts with Clemson's defense.
That really is the heart and soul of the team.
And here's the quote from Nick Eason, And you guys
can take this and run with it. It's one of
my favorite quotes in this year of college football. At
the end of the day, it's all about how bad
you want it more than your opponent. It starts inside
your heart. I'm not the Wizard of Oz or Jesus.
Some things you gotta be born with. Tremendous quote from

(14:41):
Nick Eason um trying to fire up as kids and
and we'll see if it works today because it is
a big game. Yeah, I think that Ques feels a
little bit like Kansas. Yeah I know that Syracuse doesn't
bup QB and there right now, but yeah, a little
that's a great start, vaulted almost for their season win
total already, but it has a Kansas field to it

(15:04):
where you look up and you're like, wait a minute.
Oklahoma is favored by about double digits against defeated Kansas,
and it's like, oh, okay, I see why. And the
other thing if Iowa Sam or technical producer, if he
was playing the Syracuse fights, I've never heard that before.
It sounds like before a movie like his films, and
don't be digital doesn't like instead of bet MGM, it's Metro.

was thinking about this guy's I think some times we're
in too much of a hurry to talk about what's next.
It's like when the super Bowl ends and they're like, oh, yeah,
that's nice. Here are the odds for the next super Bowl.
It's like, guys, could wend we just digest what happened.

(17:13):
So I do too. I know we're one week removed.
It's not like the night of the super Bowl and
we come out with the odds. Were one week removed,
but just for a couple of minutes. Tennessee beating Alabama.
It was a freaking classic. That game was outstanding. It
was unfortunate because I had Obama tied to a teaser,

(17:34):
but that I digressed or whatever. But it was outstanding.
And I do love a couple of the nuggets because
the goal posts were ripped down and thrown into the
Tennessee River. They were asking for donations and it was
mostly tongue in cheek. They were asking for a fifty
two dollar, nine cent donation, which is obviously yeah ahead,

(17:55):
nod to the final score right there. And also I
saw this as of last Sunday, more than sixty seven
thousand dollars had been raised, and it said, which is
fort of the goal? I'm like, goal post cost a
hundred and fifty y I had no to I think
they did. And that was also funny to Jared because

(18:17):
they ran onto the field just a sea of orange,
and they were fined a hundred thousand dollars. It was
their second penalty, is their second instance. This traces back
to a basketball game in two thousand six. That's why
this latest fine was that steep. The third penalty, it
kicks up to a quarter of a million dollars, So

(18:39):
it's crazy, like it's tied to oh six. Don't we
have like a grace period here where we reset to zero?
That was oh six. But anyway, they got fined a
hundred thousand dollars. They're not worried about it. It was
an awesome, awesome game, and hopefully we have a game
today that comes anywhere near that. That was great. Yeah,
it was incredible. I mean, there are so many storylines

(19:01):
that came out of that. You know, the the Alabama
player who reportedly chased down some fan on the field,
like you mentioned, the goalposts in the river, the the sound,
the decibel level inside of the stadium broke records. I mean,

(19:21):
it was just absolutely incredible. And yeah, you're right, we're
very quick to move on because now immediately everybody's going, well, geez, Tennessee,
I mean, can they stay undefeated in the sec? Uh?
Can they go eleven and one on the year? And
I mean, it's it's one of those one of those
wins that sets the direction the course of the season

(19:43):
in a completely opposite direction. It's a statement win. As
we were discussing it leading up to the game yesterday,
and Tennessee the valls, they've made a statement that they
cannot be taken lightly by anybody. This is usually the
spot also, by the way, to flip it over to
the other side of the card with Alabama, where Alabama
absolutely pounds on somebody who everybody is saying, well, they

(20:06):
probably shouldn't because Tennessee is pretty good, but they're they're Alabama,
so they might And then yeah, they shut up all
the critics, Well, Nick Saban, shut up nobody this this
time around the Crimson Tide. I'm not saying they got embarrassed,
but they got beat on the road in a game
they normally win. So it's just it's it really feels

(20:27):
like the winds are shifting in that conference all of
a sudden. Yeah, that is an interesting point. I think
the SEC has been the cutting edge conference. It seems
like when everyone thinks it's offense, then it switches to defense,
and and now maybe a little more offense still, but
there's a there's a lot of defense being played in
that conference by some teams, not necessarily Alabama and Tennessee

(20:50):
last week scheduling, God's very favorable to the balls they get.
See Martin today, Um, and we'll see maybe we'll last
Shamus that. I just saw that line pop up by
my screen. You know, that's one of the extra games
FBS first FCS where we don't usually see the line
pop up until early here on Saturday. And we're seeing
Tennessee favored by about forty so with the total in

(21:12):
the mid sixties. So we'll see what tennessee Martinez today. Again,
I don't have much to offer there. I can give
you a little bit of insight in the Mississippi State Alabama,
and I can't tell you that awful loss. Nick Saban
seven and oh in his last seven games, winning by
an average of thirty one points, covering all seven games
by an average of thirteen points per game. And this

(21:33):
particular series has been very one sided against Mississippi State
to sixty nine. That is the score combined of the
last seven meetings between these two UM, and one of
those games for Missisippi State at twenty four points, about
half of their total of the last seven. So in
the other six combined they scored twenty five. To me,

(21:55):
this is this is a really tough matchup I think
from Mississippi State. You have former al Bama players now
calling out the Crimson Tide and listen A J. Mccarren
say what you want about his success at the next level,
but he has a radio show in I believe Nashville
or somewhere in that part of the country and straight
up calling out the players. UM. That was interesting. And

(22:18):
again it was interesting that A. J. McCarran was calling
out the defensive players, talking about Jalen Hyatt, you know,
just running running, wild all over the UH secondary last week.
But I think that's something of note. You know, you know,
the players on the current Alabama team all heard those comments.
I'm sure they were asked about them at some point
this week by the reporters. But it's all about protecting
Bryce Young and figuring out a way to get some

(22:40):
explosion in this offense. But that being said, it was still,
you know, up seven late against Tennessee despite all the
issues that they were having defending in the back. So
I think Alabama will be fine, guys, Abasing will be fine.
It's been a week of Nick Saban's lost a step Bama.
Bama not what they used to be. It's like they
lost to an explosive tennis the offense on the road

(23:01):
when they're up by seven late and there was a
past interference penalty that could have gone either way. It's
come on, guys, we're going way over the top. Not
not you guys on the show, but what I've heard,
what I've read throughout the week, I think it's more
so wishful thinking than anything. It's like, let's not overreact.
Their favored by twenty one points today against the top

(23:21):
twenty five team, and also we know that the wide
receivers aren't what they have been with just a gauntlet
of studs, first round talents in the NFL. Do you
think that Nick Saban doesn't know that? Do you think
they're just done recruiting top wide receivers. Nick Saban's lost
the step. It's ridiculous, It's absurd. Yeah. And by the way,

(23:44):
like the offense, even without the top tier talent at
skill positions in college football, they're still generating a large
amount of points weekly. I mean, you look at that
that lost last week, they still scored boatloads of points.
So I look, this team is capable of scoring, and

(24:05):
this defense, like you know, because that is Nick Saban's
side of the ball, is going to have a bounce
back week. Again, we're looking at a real test road
test in the SEC. Last week going to a Tennessee
team that just are riding high on emotion and probably
playing in the most important game in decades. Well for

(24:27):
Alabama that was just their next game and now they
move on to their next game and it's Mississippi State.
And while look Mike Leach and that passing offense, that
air raid that we became aware of probably twelve years
ago thirteen years ago. That's really infiltrated every aspect of football.
I don't think stands much of a chance against a

(24:49):
Nick Saban coach Crimson Tide defense this week, especially one
off of a huge upset loss like we saw on
the road last week. Yeah, I got the tied by
a mill So the numbers back up what what Rich
is saying about Alabama's offense top thirty and e p
a per play. This is an offense that still is

(25:12):
methodically and explosively at times moving the ball down the field.
And when you look at Mississippi State, So here's the
big difference this week. Everyone who's got the perception Mississippi
State air raid pushed the ball down the field. Well,
Hendon Hooker has a twelve point to a dot average
depth of target, meaning he is pushing the ball down

(25:34):
the field at a high rate. Will Rogers a a
dot this season is half of that six. So while
Mississippi State likes to run the air raid, it is
more of a dink and dunk style of offense. They
are not explosively attacking the deep parts of the field,
and I think that means you have to be methodical.
You can't make mistakes. There can't be negative plays, you

(25:56):
can't take sacks, etcetera, etcetera. And then, oh, by the way,
on the defensives, out of the ball, Mississippi State bottom
tier and have it created. You can move them around
in the trenches outside the top ninety and adjusted line
yards in the middle of the field. Alabama's gonna win
this game, no doubt. On the outside, it's not going
to be as explosive as Tennessee was last week. They

(26:16):
don't have the same weapons at wide receiver that Tennessee does.
I think this game, even though the air raid, in
our minds, oh Mississippi State, it's gonna throw it all
around the field like Tennessee did, It's not going to
look the same as it did last week. Yeah, only
one team has scored at least fifty against Nick Saban
since he's been Alabama head coach. It was last week.
It was Josh Hypel and Tennessee, So shout out to them.

(26:37):
I think it says like whoa Tennessee more so than
Oh Gosh, Bama. They're just running the mill now. But
we have somebody else on this show who's explosive in
a good way. That would be our update, our very
own Isaac loew and krawn I low what's going on? Indeed,
good morning, fellas. Will start with Game three of the
National League Championship Series, which the Philadelphia Phillies started on

It's Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by bet MGM.
No time to waste, Let's dive into this SEC matchup
of the day. Okay, the SEC matchup of the day.

(28:24):
It is number twenty four ranked Mississippi State against number
six Alabama. Oh gosh, Alabama, they stick I think in
carnet word could beat him by now. Oh my gosh,
bad you've been laying out how they have not just
beaten Mississippi State, they have punked Mississippi State and off

(28:46):
of a loss. It's kind of like Mike Tyson bad intentions,
bad intentions today from Nick Saban and his Crimson Tide.
I think this could get ugly very quickly. Will Rogers,
You're gonna have to have absolutely bring it today to
keep this game close to to make it a fourth
quarter game here today. Yeah, listen. I, Um, I don't

(29:10):
see this being a close game at all. I really don't.
Alabama's defense is really good against the pass. And I thought,
Jared in our last segment there you did a masterclass.
I'm breaking down the Mike Leach offense. How it's morphed
into more of this, you know sort of Um, how

(29:30):
would I? I guess, run and shoot almost like you know,
they're keeping things close to line of scrimmage. It's almost
like therefore going a run game with the short pass game,
and they'll take their shots down field, but not many
so Mississippi State, the Bulldogs, they're playing pretty close the
line of scrimmage these days. This Alabama defense is the
tippy top of the of of the SEC. It's it's

(29:55):
close to the top nationally, or should say it's probably
top third nationally against the pass. Uh. They just had
an absolutely awful outing against Tennessee. And everybody is allowed
to have a bad day at the office occasionally, and
I think that's exactly happened with the Crimson Tide. It
was a perfect confluence of events. It was basically homecoming

(30:16):
for Tennessee. It was the moment that that that that
school has been waiting for for a long time. That
isn't this Mrs Mississippi stayed offensively, is not the Valls.
So yeah, I I got the I got the Crimson
tide in a landslide. Yeah. And we're talking a lot

(30:36):
about Alabama this week, and rightfully so, they're off the loss.
We don't get to talk about Alabama off the loss
very often, but let's talk about Mississippi State a little
bit more because they're coming off a game where they
got absolutely bullied in the trenches by Kentucky and then
you have to play Alabama next. A upset angry, I'll
put it nicely, you know, a little short Nick Saban

(30:58):
in the press conference this week, calling out as players,
calling out the coaches, basically calling out the water boy,
the bench guy, the hot dog vendor not serving the
hot dogs in the right way. Everyone's getting called out
by Nick Saban this week, and everyone's getting called out
by former Alabama players. So again, as much as Alabama
has been the storyline that we are talking about this week,
the game has played on the field and there's another

(31:20):
opponent and Mississippi State has gotten beat up when they
have played up in physical competition. I just told you
Kentucky ran up, left, right and center five yards to
carry when they played Arkansas a few weeks ago without
k J. Jefferson bail out two and or fifty rushing yards.
So I just you know, Alabama's offense has had some
issues throwing them all down the field. I think they're

(31:41):
just gonna be able to hand it off the Jamir games,
Bryce Young's gonna have his day and maybe they cover,
maybe they don't. I would expect them to cover, but
the number big, I can see a backdoor with the
air aid, you know up Laton. You know Mississippi State
sticks one into you know, backdoor cover. But at the
end of the day, I expect Alabama to control the
trenches here and to really sock one in the mouth

(32:03):
to the Bulldogs and and and make it make a statement,
sock it to him, sock him in the mouth. A
lot of socking today. Jamir Gibbs is an app stud stud,
total stud, and he's been getting more and more involved.
It's a little bit like I I don't know if
they approached it this season like Clemson's Will Shipley, where
Shipley's carries are going up, up, up, and they eased

(32:24):
to mine. I don't know if that was the plan
with Alabama, but the usage has gone up, up, up
with Jamir Gibbs as of late. It started with that
Arkansas game where he had a couple of long touchdowns,
and I don't know if that was the plan all
along for his usage rate to go up as the
season went along, or they're just kind of like, we
need to get this Jamir Gibbs guy the ball more.

(32:44):
But it's definitely serving Alabama. Well, I'm just surprised that
the air raid offense has done nothing against the Alabama
I mean nothing, right, So, yeah, you gotta have more today,
that's obvious, but I'm just surprised that hasn't been and
even slightly effective. Right. It's you talk about sucking in

(33:04):
the mouth. You gotta see a lot more from that offense.
It shouldn't just be getting utterly punked by a top
team like Bama, and it has been numerous times. Yeah, yeah, Well,
one of the most important aspects of the area offense
is having a quarterback be on his feet long enough
to deliver the football downfield. That seems like the whole show.

(33:29):
You know, you're not going to really be in the
air if you can't even get off the runway. And
and that's that's been the problem. You know, the Crimson Tide,
the Alabama front seven, their pass rush has gotten home
more than it hasn't. And that feels like it's going
to be the story of the day today. You know,
your key on watching Mississippi State really struggle, um, really

(33:52):
struggle against this pass rush and and as a result,
I think we're going to see them grounded and then
in terms of on the ground own Alabama making hey
that way. It's just again, look you, it always feels
easy to call out like the angry bounce back game
for a talented team, but that's what this really feels like.

(34:13):
This is just the perfect spot for the Tide to
to to just crush somebody on their way to their
inevitable SEC championship game birth later in the year. I
like it. I like it. All right, We've got rich

the tagline the King of Parlays. It's gonna rub off
on you today, feeling I'm feeling positive vibes here today

(36:03):
with your parlay planner, always parlay and moderation. Friends. Again,
we have done this show for seven weeks. I have
given out seven parlays. They have all lost. I like parency. Yeah,
they are not easy to hit people, especially when you
do what we like to do on them. Or I
guess I'll stop using we so you guys don't get
included in this. In this UH seven record, I've changed

(36:33):
the pronouns from we to I. Right, okay, So again,
moderation is key. Half a unit for me, that's fifty bucks.
But we're taking a shot again fifty bucks to not
too chabby South Carolina money Line Beamer Ball. They're at
home dog today against Texas A and M. Listen. I
think Shane Biemer has done a really nice job in Colombia.

(36:54):
Spencer Rattler has played well minus turnovers game cocks and
twenty in turnover margin. If they don't turn it over
today at home, I think they have a chance to
be TEXA and M struggling on both sides of the
ball outside of the top nine. This is an SEC
team outside of the top nine in e P A
pri play on offense outside the top sixty and defense.

(37:15):
I thought A and M was supposed to have a
good defense not playing like it. Third straight road game
for the Aggies lost that Mississippi State, lost that Bama
one and two on the road last season. Their only
road win in the last two years was at Missouri.
So we'll see how they do with South Carolina today.
I'll take the money line, short money line, the dog
there with the game Cocks. How about Cow, big money
line dog there? I'm selling Washington. Guys. We talked about

(37:37):
Washington early in the season, started out hot. Well, the
defense really has been a bugaboo all year. How about this.
A hundred and twenty four points allowed in their last
three games losses at U C l A, at Arizona State.
Those are the only two road games in the year
and they got blasted in those games. Cows coming off
that really embarrassing loss to Colorado. Nobody wants to bet
Cow this week except for me. But I think they're
gonna get physical in the running game. How about JH.

(38:00):
This is a kid that I think is to you know,
maybe I don't want to say, you know, first round pick,
but in a couple of years, once he develops as
a freshman, he is going to be an NFL star.
Um and I really like col today, And I don't
think Rich is gonna like this pick, but I'm gonna
take Nevada on the money line today. I listen this
San Diego State offense, and Rich, maybe you can shine

(38:22):
some light here. Eighteen and a half points per game,
a hundred and twenty seven out of a hundred and
thirty one teams in e p A per play, and
the VAT has been good in this spot four and
one as a home dog um over the last three seasons.
They already beat a team at home this year as
an underdog. They beat San Diego State two years ago
at home as an underdog. And Rich, you also can

(38:43):
shine some light here the forecast. What's going on in
Reno right now? Cold rain. I don't think the boys
of San Diego gonna like that too much. Huh. Yeah,
it's a little chilly out here. Yeah. I'm currently sitting
in a Nevada a Reno, Nevada Hotel room ahead of
calling this game between the Aztecs and the Wolf Can Yeah.
This comes down to San Diego State's efforts up front,

(39:04):
protecting their brand new quarterback Jalen Maiden, who last week
had three h two yards and a touchdown. Zero interceptions
through the air and got his receivers involved. Really for
the first time this year that has happened. So I
get your hesitance. I completely understand that. You look on
the other side of the ledger. The oddity here is

(39:26):
Nate Cox, the Wolfpack starting quarterback, is he's almost seven
ft tall. He's six ft nine. That's a big target
for the fence that feasts up front. So yeah, look,
I'm too close to this one to call it either way,
but I'm hoping that you go, uh, that you get
your parlay win this week for our listeners, Wait, what

(39:46):
a beautiful hotel room over there in rain Star. That's
that's above five Star. It looks like the lamp in
the background. Look at the lamp. Hey coming up? Nine teams,
but how many of them are magnificent? Oh? What's going on? Everybody?
Just under two hours until lovely Magnificent kickoff? Here it

(40:10):
is Fox Sports Radios count Down to Kickoff, presented by
bet MGM and nflas I thought it would be a
good time to look at the undefeated teams. We've got
nine of them, got nine left, and to sort through
who are the actual contenders we're talking about winning a championship.

(40:30):
You are in the hunt. You have a legitimate chance
to win it all. And separate the pretenders from this
group the teams that, yeah, you've had a nice season
until now, but do we really over the entire hump,
meaning the rest of college football in route to a championship.
So if we go through a couple of these, I

(40:52):
think the top three raisier your hand if there's a
disagreement here. But Georgia, yeah, defending champs contender, Ohio State, Yes, contenders, Tennessee,
I would say, yeah, as of right now, how could
you say they're not title contenders? Are you? Are we
in agreement with the top three being legit title worthy contenders?

(41:12):
I don't know about Tennessee still Okay, yeah, I mean
because again, we're we're denying ourselves reality when we we
look at that game and we say, yeah, you know,
they can contend for a title with a defense that
gave up that many points. They are awful on defense,
They're awful. They keep nobody off the field on third down.

(41:37):
They're they're only forcing offenses to the sideline twenty percent
of the time on third down. Uh, that's that's good
for close to the very bottom of FBS football. Um,
they're one hundred nine out of one hundred thirty one
qualified schools in passing defense per game. I mean, yeah,

(41:58):
I know they're going into utamar X and I know
that's gonna be another win and they'll advance to seven
and oh, but but that was a statement win. There's
no question about it beating Alabama at home. I am
not going to say that that was an impressive or
that it didn't impress me because I did not see
that coming. But I need to see more from Tennessee
before I'm a believer, because that defense is a humongous liability. Yeah,

(42:22):
I agree. You want to see Tennessee in the National
Championship or in the College Football Playoff. They've got to
beat Georgia now, and and that's the disadvantage for the
division that they play, and then the schedule that they
have this year, They've got to beat Georgia. They've already
beat Alabama. And you would think that's you know, when
you're playing a video game, you know it's like the
boss at the end, and you it's Alabama, Right, Yeah,

(42:44):
it's it's not this year. It's actually Georgia. In a
couple of weeks. So that is the next hurdle for Tennessee.
I agree with Rich. I am not sold on Tennessee.
I think we have seen Tennessee's best this year. It
was pretty good, but I just I don't see it
uh continuing for them. I think Georgia does present a
different challenge than Alabama does, and I think that's gonna

(43:07):
be the game where they get tripped up. Okay, interesting
stuff and uh yeah at Georgia. And that's that's your roadblock.
If you don't get by Georgia, there's no SEC championship game,
there's no college football playoff birth. You know, that's really
what it comes down to. On the road against the Dogs.
How about number four Michigan. Now they did bludge in

(43:27):
your Niitney Lions last week, ran it up and down
the field. But when you start thinking about legitimate title contenders,
what if somebody slows down Blake Coreum, what if they're
playing Georgia right, I can't get the playoff loss last
season out of my head. Can you see Michigan getting

(43:48):
over the Ohio State hump, getting over to college playoff games?
Getting over those humps? I just don't have enough trust
in j j McCarthy, their pass rushes down from last.
You're losing a couple of top guys. I just don't
think they have enough to get over the hump. What
do you guys think? I think their regular season champs.
And I'm not saying this because, um, because they just

(44:11):
beat my Nitney Lions and embarrassed them and you know,
pounded them by twenty four points. Because I'll give you
another twenty four. The twenty four touchdowns that they've scored
on the ground, most by way of Blake Koram has
impressed me. And that game that that dog will eat
in college football. But the problem is, like you said,
the last team on their schedule is Ohio State and

(44:34):
that is a roadblock on the season because they're not
better than Ohio State. Um. And so yeah, it's it
feels like the Tennessee Titans in the NFL. To use
this as an analogy, I mean, when you look at
Tennessee with their quarterback and their defense, you say, okay, um,

(44:54):
if you're going to rely completely on Derrick Henry for
your success, that'll work as long as Derrick Henry stays
healthy and as long as he's productive. But as soon
like you said Blake Corehum, you know has a tweak
in a ham me or an ankle spring or whatever.
I mean, the show is over. So yeah, I never

(45:14):
trust a team that's too reliant on one skilled player,
in particular, especially these days, on a running back. So yeah,
I look, I'm not saying they're frauds. They're not. That
is a great regular season football team, but are the
championship level? No, no, they are not. Totally agree and
again the point differential, which is, you know, you have

(45:37):
to take the schedule and all these things into account,
bl blah blah blah blah, but point differential wise, Michigan
is better than Ohio State. Um, you know, just points,
four points against period, end of story. They've scored more points,
they've allowed fewer points than the Buckeyes. So we start,
and we can start doing this now, because let's be honest.
Michigan schedule the next few weeks, not exactly murderers row.

(45:58):
The best team they'll face is ill Anoi and it's
at home. Their only road game before they play Ohio
State is at Rutgers, and again, I think both teams
will be undefeated heading into that game and we will
get a similar vibe to what we saw last year.
Even though Michigan wasn't undefeated in that game, it was
still winner take all in the Big Ten. I just

(46:19):
don't see Ohio State losing that game. So the only
way that Michigan gets into the College Football Playoff is
if they beat Ohio State. They did it last year.
It was at home, it was snowing, it was a
physical game. They blasted Ohio State in the mouth. Ohio
States defense wasn't ready for that challenge. Well, what have
we seen from Ohio States defense this year? Enter Jim Knowles.

(46:41):
They are a top ten unit. I mean, and you
see the effect he's had on Oklahoma State's defense leaving
We've seen Oklahoma State's defense drop off dramatically this season
with all of the numbers across the board, and Ohio
States defense has gotten the benefit of that. So it's
a different Ohio State team this year, same quarterback, aim talent,
maybe not as talented at wide receiver, but still very

(47:03):
talented at wide receiver. But it's the defense for the
buck Eyes that in my opinion, makes them a championship unit. Yeah.
Really tough for Michigan to run it back beating Ohio
State for a second straight year, this time on the road.
When the Buckeyes want uh, they want some payback. That's
gonna be really tough. Okay, if you look at Clemson,
number five ranked team in the country, undefeated, are they

(47:25):
a legitimate title contender or are they pretenders? It's one
of these teams where I look at him and I say,
I kind of grip my teeth. I'm like, yeah, they're
they're contenders. I can't say that they aren't. But you know,
I'm not as I used to be, like a peacock,
Like is Clemson a contender? Like, yes, absolutely, I'm just
trutting around. I'm not doing the same thing right now.

(47:48):
But d j u Wei has improved, and I do
think that defensive line, which has underperformed, they have so
much talent and they are capable of shutting down owned teams.
Put it like this, Clemson versus Michigan on a neutral field,
Blake Corum in that running game against Clemson's uh defensive line,

(48:09):
I would favor Clemson in that match. And so yeah,
I would say that they are legit title contenders. I
expect him to be in the College Football Playoff. And
when you don't have teams just towering over them. Yeah,
I have to put them in the mix. Yeah, and
you know, and Clemson has survived a variety of Now again,
I I don't think they've been the tippy top of

(48:30):
the mountain when we're talking about talent, but a variety
of different challenges, playing Wake on the road, getting that
victory against thirteen ranked Wake Forest team, UM, beating mc
State they hosted them earlier this season. This is the
next challenge, if you want to call it that. Hosting
Syracuse who's undefeated but really hasn't gone through anybody yet.

(48:55):
And then the rest of the season, no offense. Brian
is pretty easy. They got noted him after that. UM,
they've got Miami and Southern in in South Carolina. So
you just have one of those. You have one of
those seasons where this could be a very tidy looking record. Uh.

(49:15):
Come season's end, UM, there's probably gonna be a zero
on one side of it, and it's the right side
of it. They're good on defense. I think Dju has
committed himself to success shutting the way in the off season.
I like the versatility of the offense. They design runs
for him. I think Clemson is a real threat to

(49:36):
any team they face in this country at this point,
and I think they're only gonna get better. I'm I'm
high on the Tigers, and the a c C always
birds a team like this, whether it's Clemson or otherwise,
where they haven't seen like the the gamut that some
of these other teams need to face exiting their conference
play and then they head to the playoffs a little

(49:59):
bit sure, So that's what I see going to be
the story here with Clemson this season as well. Yeah,
I'm with you on Clemson. I think the one team
that we don't really view as a contender right now
is that because it's been a little bit disjointed at times,
the defense given up forty five a week and letting
Florida State run all over him last week. But at

(50:21):
the end of the day, it's all about the w's,
and the w's are still on the right side of
the column. We are still seeing a team that continues
to pile up wins. They play Syracuse today, They're favored
by two touchdowns. They're going to win that game, They're
likely going to cover. Maybe we'll hit up this game
later in our rapid fire segment. Wink wink, nudge and nudge.
But at Notre Dame in two weeks is their toughest

(50:43):
game left. They get a bye week next week, and
then they get to go into Notre Dame and you
never know, it's South Bend. Maybe touchdown. Jesus has a
has a chance to, you know, pull pull some rabbits
out of his hat there. But I do think we're
gonna see an undefeated Clemson team in the a c
C Championship game, likely a double digit favorite in that game,
and at that point it's winning You're in. Because, let's

(51:05):
be honest, the rest of the country this year all
has that big boss at the end, whether it's Michigan
and Ohio State, whether it's Tennessee having to play Georgia,
and then of course the SEC Championship game. Clemson has,
for lack of a better word, a bye into the
College Royal Playoff comparatively speaking to those other matchups that
are much tougher. So I just I like the vibes

(51:26):
with Clemson right now. I think Dabo Sweeney likes to
be the underdog. He likes to be the team that
isn't talked about. That's how they get up for these games.
Clemson is the powerhouse with Trevor Lawrence and DeShawn Watson,
top five team all year, no doubt they're in the playoff.
That's all well and good, But I think Dabo likes
this old school vibe where before Clemson's run, when they

(51:47):
were making that ascent, you saw this motivational factor like
we're no good, nobody likes us, We're in the A C. C.
All these things, and that's how he gets his boys
up for this game. Now, Clemson defense has to play better, period,
end of story. That defense needs to improve because they're
giving up for They're gonna give up big points to
Ohio State, they're gonna give up big points to Alabama
and Bryce Young. So I think that's the biggest adjustment

(52:10):
that needs to be made over the next six weeks.
They lost bright venables. How does the defense continue to improve.
Maybe we'll see it start today against Syracuse. Okay, so
we have four more undefeated teams. I don't know if
you guys go bowling at all, but they call it
the dinner bucket. When there are four pins kind of
all together. It's not not your thing. But to sixty

(52:33):
five average, I would imagine Rich just gets it done.
Why don't just the shaped clavicles on the left side
if he's a righty big fan anyone, Yeah, oh yeah,
absolutely yeah yeah. Sip on a white rush and ate
the dinner bucket portion. Here, four more undefeated teams. Raise

(52:56):
your hand if you believe in anyone being a title contender.
That's the criteria here. They can win it all, miss
CCU U c l A Syracuse. Absolutely not, absolutely right, Like,

(53:17):
let's be honest, there's not a lot in the country
this year at the top tier, right rich, Like, it's
just it feels like Alabama, House State and everyone else.
Even though Alabama lost last week, it still feels like Alabama,
Ohio State, maybe Georgia and everybody else. Yeah, no, it
really does. I I. You know, there are so many
teams that are going to be found out uh here
late in the season, and and it really is what

(53:39):
everybody's been talking about. It's it's those gifted four programs
who will you know, rise to the top the cream
that will be skimmed and sent to the playoff this
season as it's been and until they expand. This is
what it looks like now if it expands to eight,
if it's expands to twelve. That if the playoff field expands,

(54:00):
it's a sixteen at some point that maybe we can
start having conversations about oh, I don't know, a Michigan
sneaking up on a couple of teams in the postseason
and buying for a championship or a team that looks
like um, I guess maybe a U c l A
this season on a special tear in a postseason run.

(54:20):
But these teams the what would you call it again?
The four dinner bucket? Yeah, I mean they got no
shot like a vegan dinner. Yeah. Isn't it a lot
of meat? There? The nine undefeated teams, you guys have
three of the nine IS title contenders. That's where I
put really is the only outsider kind of but they're

(54:41):
not really an outsider there about still in the in
the elite tier. Here's a better dinner bucket? Of these
four teams? Who do you like the most? These are
all one loss Teamskaya, Oregon, Oklahoma State, USC. You probably
eliminate Oklahoma State, but Bama, Oregon, USC. Who do you
like the most? Yuh? I I eliminate USC Oky State

(55:07):
pretty quick, and they hate when you call him Oki State. Um,
that's why I'm calling him Okei State. Um, yeah, I
think it's still Bama. Look again, experience matters in football
so much. And when you have somebody who's been through
the wars as many times as Saban at the Helm,
I want to say, I can believe in Bo Nicks

(55:30):
and the Ducks and it's going to be a fun
story on the season. But the Pack twelve oftentimes cannabalizes
itself and there's treachery on that schedule to come and
you just sort of feel like, you know, Nick Saban's
gonna have his team buying to buying the line. Just
ignore the rat poison. We're all about Crimson Tide football,

(55:50):
and so yeah, of those four, I'll pick the Tide.
I mean, listen, guys, I'm following I'm following up the
firing up goodness, gracious Jared speak. Uh. The bet MGM
futures odds right now, and Alabama is still plus four
fifty to win the national championship despite losing last week.
You know, Ohio State's obviously the favorite, Georgia's right behind
Tier I would say one A, one B, and Alabama

(56:14):
is still a significant favorite top tier team to win
the national championship. Clemson is next. There's your top four
right there. I mean, honestly, it's it's October. We're not
even the Halloween yet. Am I gonna go out on
a limb and say the top four is set? And
it's Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and that's it. And

(56:35):
and really those are the four teams in the playoffs.
I mean, I know, I feel like I do this
every year, but I just don't see another team sneaking
into that top four. I think that's the four. Yeah,
it's probably what it is. Hopefully we get some crazy curveballs.
I always root for curveballs, but we will once it expands.
But I just it's just there's not enough. There's not

(56:55):
enough good teams. And and the structure too, because of
the schedule, makes it really hard for one of these teams.
He can like Tennessee, they've gotta bea in Alabama and
Georgia in the same year and then when the SEC
championship game. I mean, that is just it's tough to do.
Absolutely it is. Hey, every time you make a wager
at bet MGM, you earn bet MGM rewards points that
can be redeemed for things like free bets and risk

(57:16):
free tokens. They can also be converted to MGM rewards
points that can be used towards dining, shows and hotel
rooms at over twenty MGM resorts. All right, we're often running.
We're about two hours no to one am. I time about.
We're one hour and forty ish minutes away from tickoff
here Rich orn Berger. He's that Penn State All American

(57:38):
with the two sixty five bowling average. Jared Smith. Maybe
he's a pickleball guy. I don't know, but you don't
have time for bowling. I don't know. He's from picks
wise dot com. I'm Brian No. I love bowling. I
don't know the last time I've been black. I got
a little tendonitis in the uh the forearm elbow area.
I had a dream, true store, I had a dream
I was bowling the other night. I'm like, arm works again,

(58:01):
I can bowl. You really end up bowling there. I
love bowling. Dreaming about the bowling. Yeah, it's strange right there.
All right? Coming up next an injury issue that you
gotta keep your eye on today. We'll have details for
you coming up. It's Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff

(58:24):
in the nation. You're locked into Fox Sports Radio's Countdown

King of sports Books. Once again. Here's Brian no, Rich
Hornberger and Jared Smith. It is Fox Sports Radio's Countdown

(58:45):

a friend to invite a friend, and in just a
few simple steps, both you and your friend will receive
a fifty dollar bonus. Bet MGM, the King of sports books,
the King of Parlay's Let's hit it Big twelve matchup
of the deck, all right, that would be number twenty

(59:06):
Texas at number eleven Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State a six
points home underdog here and the key injury that you
gotta keep your eye on. Spencer Sanders, Oklahoma State's quarterback.
Shoulders a little iffy. We also have stiff wind in
Oklahoma had a good combination. Messed up shoulder, stiff wind

(59:30):
as a quarterback. That's not what you want. Texas lights out,
defense as well. So this is not a good spot
for the Polks, not a good spot over here. But
Spencer Sanders, he's gotta play, gotta play really well for
them to have a chance at the outright upset. I
just don't love the odds of that happening today, guys. Yeah, yeah,
look falsely declaring Texas is back. It's a tradition like

(59:56):
like no other in college football. Like and I am
right there. I I look the only games that uh
Texas lost, Quinn Youers, I think played a combined quarter
in you know, those losses against UM, Alabama and Texas Tech.
So I'm a believer in Texas. Like you said, their

(01:00:17):
defense is top notch. And also be Jean Robinson uh
unsurprising that he's been one of the best running backs
in the country. He makes a lot of tackler's miss.
He he just has one of those rare makeups where
he can keep his balance through contact as good as
anybody we've seen in college football, certainly recently. Javonte Williams

(01:00:41):
comes to mind. Um who was tremendous in college but
um and by the way, his understudy Johnson uh he
makes people miss and an insane race rate two. So this,
this run game for Texas is just going to be
too much for Oklahoma State to handle. So in the
condition as you mentioned to it favors the run game

(01:01:02):
of Texas. Yeah, I'm all over it. I think the
Longhorns roll today. Richie and I are in the same page.
But b Gen Robinson miss tackle numbers at the top
of my list, fifty six miss tackles this season. It's
almost like every game it's five ten times. He just

(01:01:23):
you know, figures out ways to get past people, threw
them around them, over them. I think I feel good
about saying he is the number one running back in there,
Like if I had to rank them, I would put
his name at the top of my list. And I
know there's a lot of other talented running backs in
the country, but I think the longevity that he's been
doing it and the the the quality of his runs. Now,

(01:01:45):
when you look at Oklahoma State's offense, the excuse me
Olhoma State's defense. We talked about this in the in
the prior segment with Jim Knowles. Of course going to
Ohio State, they just they haven't been the same defense
this year. And when they did step up in class
last week against TCU, of their runs went for five
or more yards, so they're not stopping the run and

(01:02:06):
they're really struggling to defend overall. Well, that's really good
news for b Sean Robinson in Texas because you're right,
the wins will play a factor in this game, and
I think the running game will be prevalent. Now, how
many stops can this Oklahoma State defense get, Well, they're
gonna have to get a lot because we don't know
what Spencer Sanders is going to be. And the thing

(01:02:28):
that I heard last week he did get a quarter
zone shot or I don't know, the painkilling shot before
the game against TCU. He looked great in the first half,
came out guns and blaze and didn't feel a thing.
And then you saw the drop off in the second
half when TCU took over the game. And oh, by
the way, on past his fifteen or more yards down
the field, Sanders was three or fourteen with an interception,

(01:02:48):
Unable to push the ball down the field with that
injured shoulder. How much can he do that today? Against
a Texas defense top fifteen in schedule adjusted efficiency. Pete
kwai Kowski has done an unbelievable job with this defense.
Of course, came over from Washington and you know the
Boise State days as well, really smart defensive coordinator. They
bring in Gary Patterson this year, special assistant. Maybe I

(01:03:10):
should be the special assistant here to Fox Sports Radio
count down to kickoff because Gary Patterson's got a pretty
sweet gig, comes in, hangs out with Sark, you know,
spices up this defense a little bit, probably getting a
six figure payout just to you know, work a couple
of days a week. Not not not too bad for
old Gary pat right, but this is a really good
Texas defense and Spencer Sanders is not. Today. Don't really

(01:03:33):
see a path to victory for the books. Yeah, I
don't like Spencer sanders second half numbers resembling Russell Wilson's
second Not where you want to After that shot wears off,
things get a little dicey. Where we want to be
is right here listening to Isaac Lowen Croyd. I low
with the latest, especially because we have some fresh NFL

(01:03:56):
news this morning. Oh yes, the Detroit Lions have made
Jack Fox the highest paid punter in the NFL. They're
signing him to a three year extension worth over eleven
million dollars with seven point five million guaranteed, because after all,
it's a paraphrase. Greg Maddox and Tom Glavin chicks dig

(01:04:18):
the long punts. Maybe that was yeah, I think that
I tried to get as much hang time as possible
on that one. Speaking of the sport, Thematox and Glavin
played Game three of the National League Championship Series on
Friday Night, saw the Phillies beat the Padres for to two,

(01:04:39):
so Philadelphia leads the series two games to one. Game
for it tonight from Philadelphia at seven forty five Eastern
up first at five oh seven Eastern. Game three of
the American League Championship Series as the Yankees host the Astros,
with Houston leading the series two games to none. NBA
Friday Night, Nicola Yo kits the seventies seven triple double
of his career in Denver's one to one twenty three

(01:05:03):
win at Golden State. Damian Lillard scored forty one is
Portland beat Phoenix at overtime one thirteen to one eleven.
John Moran dropped forty nine in Memphis is one nine
one two win at Houston, and the Utah Jazz one
in Minnesota. In overtime one thirty two to one twenty six,
despite Rudy Gobert getting twenty three rebounds against his former

(01:05:24):
team Fellas Back to You, Thank You, I Low. It
is Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by bet MGM.
Let's dive into this follow the money, real good money.
We're following the Money with our main man, Shamus McGee,
team lead of sports Trading at bet MGM. Shamus, We're

(01:05:44):
convinced you're from the future. I don't know what it is, dude.
Every week you come on here and you're like, I
don't know, just keep your eye on this one and poof,
like magic, it comes to fruition. I just want to know,
cliffs notes version, what your processes like, how you look
at these games, these lines to handle the money that's
coming in and routinely are picking winners on the show.

(01:06:08):
I mean, I really hope a lot of my friends
and family are listening to hear that that intro that
was on my tombstone from the future. Um, I don't know.
You gotta in coage football. You gotta pick spots, you
gotta look at, you know, certain scheduling things, idea anything

(01:06:29):
short money, especially where the line, where's the line moving,
where's it going? But really that's what you're gonna try
to do, and it's you know, there's a random sport.
If we watch it every every week, this is it's
a funny sport. Uh sometimes so this is it's been
the crazy year so far, and last week certainly no different, Shamus,
I think what we see and you might have some

(01:06:53):
more direction here, but from what I'm hearing with the
you know, all the podcasts and all the sharp gamblers
that I talked to and you guys odds makers on
a weekly basis, it seems like there's a lot of
discrepancy with the ratings, meaning one group will have a
team rated a certain way and another group will have
a team rated another way. And what it's led to,
especially in these bigger games, is a lot of push pull,

(01:07:14):
a lot of line opens, flies in one direction two
or three points and then boom back in the other
direction because the other you know, book that has it,
or the other group that has a different rating on
a on on a team will will kind of step in.
Is it hard for you as an odds maker to
kind of thread the needle when you have clearly very
respected gamblers on very opposite sides of the market. Seemingly

(01:07:35):
every week, it's really hard for college football. I mean
this this week, especially with some openers that we're going up.
I mean take Texas, Oklahoma State burn example, there were
some spots opening between one and two that lines up
to six. Now I've seen a couple of six and
a half's. Now you had Mississippi as a as a
road favorite. Uh, when it opens, they're now a short

(01:07:57):
dog and it seems to be one of the sharper
plays the day. And even Baylor coming up at noon
they opened up under ten. They're up to eleven now
and bet of GM. So you're seeing it every week. Uh,
it's it's not necessarily the NFL, where it feels like
everyone's got a pretty good handle about how they rate teams.
There's gonna be a lot of different opinions on these
college games. And then especially if there's injuries in these games,

(01:08:21):
how important is one guy to uh, either the offensive
the defense. I look at some of these against the
spread records and I just go cross syded with like,
you know from this year this day moving like, so
I'll give you one that I just saw today Indiana's
twenty sty two and three against the spread and road

(01:08:43):
conference games since two thousand and five, only yukon U
and l V and Colorado have been less profitable. I
look at that and I think, like, well, Indiana has
had several different coaches, They've had hundreds of different players
over that span of time. How could that possibly be
useful to gamblers? So I ask you it, Shamus, is

(01:09:04):
that useful to gamblers? In my Huntmule opinion is not.
I don't find it usefulness, especially for college sports. I
don't want to hear about Notre Dames record against the
spread against top five teams when Yo, Brady Quinn played
like eight of them, Like, you're absolutely right, Like what

(01:09:29):
does what does the Indiana you know, starting offensive line
got to do with how they played in the Horseshoe
as a as a twenty three point dog in two
out and seven? You know, Like it's if some people
use that to their advantage, of more power to them.
There's a lot of ways to pick winners in this business,

(01:09:49):
but I don't think that's I don't think long term,
it's a way to do it. He's shamous McGee from
bet MGM joining us here on countdown to kickoff. What
has been eye opening to you? Famous looking at all
the point spreads, all the lines, where the line movement
has started, where it's gone. What catches your eye heading
into today's action. I touched on it before this old

(01:10:14):
Miss L s U game. We were talking about when
the openings were going up before. We were a little
surprised that Mississippi was opening up a favorite, and the
market told us pretty quickly that L s U should
be favorite in this game. We're currently sitting around one
and a half right now, UM, and that game has
come up at three theory, so there's still plenty of
more action to take on that. UM. The Texas mistake

(01:10:37):
came another one where it's a sharpened square linement really
right there where both sides really love the Longhorns today.
That's a team that a lot of people are either
hot of call I feel on this Longhorns team, So
we'll see how that goes. Especially and then uh, the
TCU were t TCU. It's been a very uh it

(01:10:58):
seems square side the last two weeks. UM open up
around five and a half this week and outstown to
around three and a half against Kansas State yeah, those
are all on the list for later today. Shamus, you
you you you hit, especially the L s U game,
and that was the one that really stood out to me.
Um And I'm sure at some point today we'll break
that game down. I think that game is going to

(01:11:19):
be in the rapid fire, maybe even the player today.
Who knows, Maybe we still got time to figure it out.
Um Okay. Last week he gave us Cold Gate, which
turned out to be an app stone cold you know,
win almost from the start, other than a couple of
moments there where I got nervous, but for the most
part I was brushing my teeth flossing throughout the entire game.
Is there an FBS Verse FCS matchup today or just

(01:11:40):
one of those completely off the radar FCS games that
is starting to draw a little red flags on your screen?
There is only one FCS FBS game today, and you
have to really hold your nose and take this FCS
team a lot of points. Yeah, I know where you're
going here, Martin. You can get it at thirty eight

(01:12:04):
and a half. Knoxville. It is what some would say
the spot of the century, the century Knoxville. Let's go Tennessee,
coming off probably the biggest win in almost twenty five
years with Kentucky on deck. Does Henna look even play

(01:12:27):
the whole game? This is the ranked FCS team and Martin, Okay,
they've hung around with with a couple of BS teams
this year, winners of three straight. It's maybe they hang
in this game. You have to after watching that that's
thriller last week in knock, So you're gonna have to

(01:12:48):
really just hold yours and take your medicine with this one.
I love love the Shameless Special. I mean my phone
dings every single Saturday at this time. I'm like, well,
it's it's coming. It's the shame As Special and you
got u T Martin, Oh, this is gonna be fantastic

(01:13:10):
if that hits too. Hey, last one, do you do
you have any do you have any belief in the
the angry bounce back right Alabama Mississippi State Penn stayed
against the Golden Golfers, Like, does does that have any
value to you? Or should it have any value to
a better who's staring down a line? They like, I

(01:13:31):
think it could. I mean it's not an automatic spot
for a lot of teams. You gotta look at the coach,
and I think certainly Nick Saban as a coach like
that defense. I had to have the worst practice ever
this week, Laban, I you gotta look at the coach's playing.
I think this is this could be a spot Ralabama

(01:13:52):
really comes out and really tries to send a message
because they can't. They can't lose another game all year. Yeah,
by the way, shame as before you go. We always
appreciate your time. Is it okay to not know the
nickname of you, T Martin? If we are betting on
you T Martin? Today they are the Skyhawks. Look at that.

(01:14:15):
That's the lockoff moment. Right there dropped the Mike. Shamus,
you're the best man. Always appreciate the time with you. Thanks, guys,
thank you. There he is Shamus McGee, team lead of
sports Trading. And I knew he was gonna be on you, T. Martin.
I knew, and we we called it in the in
the early party, like I knew he was going to
give that one out. I love this hold your nose

(01:14:37):
and for dear life already locked it in. I got
thirty nine guys. I'm I'm in that guy's track record.
He has been money on this show. Absolute money. Jared Smith,
he's the lead betting analyst from peck pix wise dot com.
Also Rich Ornberger with us here Penn stayed all American
and his fancy hotel and I bet they have like those.

(01:15:00):
Uh I bet he has a remote control for the drapes.
Those are manuals. Yeah, no, I wouldn't touch these drapes.
I promise you that really drapes. So I can't believe it.
I'll probably no coming up next, Just because it starts
off one way in college football does not mean it'll
stay that way. Details to come. It's Fox Sports Radio's

(01:15:21):
Countdown to Kickoff presented by bet MGM. Kickoffs are coming, Sue,
and we're leading you up to that. This is Fox
Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by bett MGM. The
kick of sports books once again. Here's Brian No, Rich
Hornberger and Jared spit A. Yes, just a little over

(01:15:48):
an hour until kickoff. It's Fox Sports Radios Countdown to
Kickoff presented by bet MGM. Excited about this, let's dive
on in not live yet live being okay, So what
the heck does that mean? We're looking for in game
betting opportunities Obviously these games haven't kicked off yet, but

(01:16:11):
what they do, we might get some in game opportunities
that we're looking for. Here, guys, I'll start it off here.
I'm looking at this Texas Oklahoma State game. We've talked
about it here on the show. Spencer Sanders the shoulder issue.
He started off great last week and then really declined
as the game wore on. So what if the Pokes

(01:16:33):
get off to a hot start against Texas at home
today could easily happen. I'm looking to back Texas at
a reduced point spread. If the Pokes get off to
a hot start, I still think there's value in back
in Texas as the game goes on. Um, I'm gonna
take mine to the A C. C. We were talking
about this game earlier. It is to undefeat his face

(01:16:55):
each other. Um. But look, Clemson is facing Syracuse at home.
If Syracuse scores early, like if we have a seven
nothing or a ten nothing Syracuse lead in the first quarter,
that number will creep down for you if you love Clemson,
but you don't love the number. And I feel like
there's great value there because through four quarters, Clemson is

(01:17:18):
going to beat this team. I mean, and I think
they're going to beat them soundly. So if if you
love Clemson but you don't love the fourteen, just just
see if Syracuse scores early, even if it's a field
goal that might creep down a half point we'll see.
But but yeah, that's the game I'm spotlighting. We haven't

(01:17:39):
talked a lot about this game, but Iowa at Ohio State.
Oh yeah, this is another one that early start time game.
I could see Ohio State going through some early motions
here and then I mean, they're favored by thirty, so
if they start slow. Not to put the buddy Iowa sam.
Actually I follow this new person on Instagram who's at

(01:18:01):
former Iowa Love and she's making all these jokes about
Brian Farren's and nepotism and all these things. It's very funny,
but it's not funny if you're an Iowa fan. It's
been wrong. I think it's going to be a rub
day for the Hawk Eyes. So keep an eye on
that Ohio State game early see how the buck Eyes
get out of the gates if there's a little bit
of a stumble there, because I do think the buck
Eys will put a pretty big number on the Hawk
Eyes today. By the way, Iowa Sam, can you play

(01:18:24):
that screaming SoundBite again? Real fast? Do you? Evan handed?
There you go, man, fun facts for you guys. That
is actually Iowa Sam right there that on this team
for the last watching the Iowa Hawk Eyes. What's Brian
Farren's gonna lose his job? That ever gonna happen? Question

(01:18:44):
of the year. Yeah, Sam is so upset, he's so dejected.
Here here's actually, here's what I'll give you, Sammy, um
just be listening around an hour from now, because the
Hawk Eyes may make an appearance on my rapid fire alight,

(01:19:06):
all right? I just picture the board, you know, in
front of technical director Iowa Sam and him just pounding
the board and the Hawk guys are letting him down.
Are coming up next. Reputation isn't always the reality, especially
with these squads. What's going on? Everybody? We're less than

(01:19:26):
an hour away until kickoff. Should be a great day
of action. Five ranked versus ranked games highlighted by number
nine U c l A against number ten Oregon. Here
Oregon a six and a half point favorite at bet MGM.
Here's the thing, guys, we've talked about this before the reputation.

(01:19:48):
I think of both of these teams finesse finesse U
c l A finesse Oregon. I've heard that so many times.
Look at U c l A. They have been running
the ball down there opponent's throat with Zach sharbon A.
If you look at Oregon, especially before this season when
they had Travis Dye and going back to the Chip

(01:20:09):
Kelly days, they were a much more physical team than
they got credit for. Go up to Noah Sewol and
justin Flow and call them finesse. You know what I'm saying,
Like these teams are more physical than they're given credit for.
It's one of the main reasons they're in the top
ten right now. But I think it's one of these
deals where the big stage that's the reason for the reputation.

(01:20:31):
If you look at Oregon in that first game getting
punked by Georgia, it's a little bit like Kirk Cousins.
We just talked about his prime time games and that's
as if he's only that guy, much better outside of
those standalone games. But I think with the stand alone
or the marquee matchups with U c l A and Oregon,
if they have been getting out physical and they have

(01:20:51):
at times. I think the reputation goes further than the reality.
What do you guys think about that? You know what?
I I look at this game and I think everybody's
concentrating on the QB duel. Like you know, I I've
been reading about this, I've been listening to people discussed
Dorian Thompson, Robinson and Bo Nicks all week long. And

(01:21:14):
I agree with you said in the first place. I
I think this is just these are two teams who
are vastly different from an identity standpoint than they've been
in years past. You know, Zack Charbonnet with U c
l A. Oregan's Bucky Irving. I don't think it's getting
enough love transfer from Minnesota. Those are the two top
rushing attacks in the conference. And and I think we

(01:21:37):
we sort of saw Oregon's success on the doorstep of
this season. U c l A snuck up on everybody.
But after you know, beating Washington and Utah in consecutive
weeks and announcing themselves as a legitimate contender, well legitimate

(01:21:57):
contender in the conference. Um, I they're not surprising the Ducks.
I'm excited to see this game I think that I
think it's rare in the very recent past that we
can get really excited for Pack twelve matchup and expect fireworks.
I'm expecting fireworks. This should be fun. Yeah, I total
to in this scheme low almost like the weather here

(01:22:21):
in Vegas today. Um, maybe he actually gonna touch eighty today,
but the winds keeping the tempts down a little bit.
But yeah, if Oregan's finesse, then I was explosive on offense, right,
I mean honestly, like, let's and sorry I was saying.
I didn't mean to keep eating the dead horse just
but it's just fissed on the board, right, it's the

(01:22:41):
low hanging crude. We're gonna go to Iiowa. We're gonna
go again. Um, I think I think when you talk
about this, this this Oregon team, there's just so much
talent in the trenches. And again, you're right the the
our our brain thinks, Chip Kelly, spread it out, throw

(01:23:02):
the ball, and maybe that's what you c l A
Likes to do. I would say U c l A
Is a little more finesse than Oregan is. But you know,
Rich brought up some great numbers about the you know,
the u c l A defensive line creating some pressure.
They got to u C or they got to came
rising on thirty seven percent of dropbacks last week, which
is interesting. We'll see if that holds true. Or excuse me,

(01:23:23):
two weeks ago, um and this Bruins defensive line I
think has a chance to put some pressure on Oregon's front. Now,
the adjusted pressure rate hasn't been strong outside the top eighty,
but again when they faced Utah a couple of weeks ago,
they got some pressure there and they caused some havoc.
I think there was a fumble six or you know,
defensive score that really, you know, turned that game on

(01:23:45):
its head, laid and it's been an opportunistic U c
l A defense ken Oregon control the tempo. The road
atmosphere at Austen is intriguing. Here a little bit of
an advantage that this game is being played at twelve
thirty local time and not a night game at Botson
where things get a little freaky up there in the
Pacific Northwest. But I do think this Oregon offensive line

(01:24:06):
does have the ability to control tempo. And when you
look at the game against Georgia, the box score looks
a little different than the final score does. The numbers
aren't as bad at the second level as that big
number at the top the scoreboard actually looks. And then
you look at their other games against relatively good offenses
B Y U, Washington State. I know you CEL is better,

(01:24:27):
but Oregon's defensive line also controlled the tempo in those games.
So I think the trench warfare here is crucial, and
I do think Oregon has an edge in the trenches
in this game. Yeah, you know, I've made an adjustment.
I'm a new man this year because I used to
be like, hey, are you a title contender? If you're not,

(01:24:48):
I kind of put you on the back burner. And
this year it's not like that. We talked about this
earlier with the undefeated teams, the one lost teams, who
you think are truly title contenders and who are the pretenders.
I think when it comes down to it, U, C.
L A and Oregon are both pretenders. I don't expect
them to be true title worthy teams. But if you
put this this game on the back burner just because

(01:25:10):
they aren't in that mix, I think you're completely missing out.
I think you're totally missing out. It's a great matchup,
should be a great game today. I'll give you another one,
same concept, Kansas State at TCU. We didn't have either
of these teams as title contenders, but it's a great
matchup and if you love college football, it's just right
up your alley. TCU a three and a half point

(01:25:32):
favorite at home, and I don't know how you guys feel,
but it just feels like TCU is like losing a
little bit more juice. It's almost like boxing. Right when
they come out in the first round, they're like, all right,
we're throwing haymakers. Oklahoma, You've got nothing on us, right,
and now it's been taking a couple of body blows
and they just survived against Oklahoma State. I'm not saying

(01:25:54):
they're they're down and out, but they're staggering as they
go back to their corner before the next round. That's
the feeling I get with TCU at this stage. Yeah,
if you get too wrapped up in you know all
they're playing for all the marbles, you know, then you're
really missing the greater picture, which is with the Ducks
facing the Bruins today, it's a great UH Pack twelve

(01:26:15):
matchup and with this case, State TCU game. You're seeing
a great Big twelve matchup, and and I think Doug
In what he's done for the horn Frogs over the
course of this season has been impressive, especially since you
look at who he's been his first three seasons. He
was a forty one touchdown twenty interception guy. This season,

(01:26:37):
he's thrown six teen touchdown so far to one interception.
So he's doing a much better job protecting the football
and that's leading to a lot of the success that
the horn Frogs have gotten to enjoy, the reason a
big part of the reason why their number eight in
the country right now. But yeah, like, I I like
the I like your your thought on the outset of
both of these games. Yeah, you could get lost did

(01:27:00):
in the well? I mean, it's not as sexy as
it used to be with U C. L A And
Oregon because they play smash mouth football now. Or you
could get lost in the Yeah, but are either of
these two Big twelve teams really vuying for anything in
the national conversation? Who cares? It's an awesome mid season
matchup and it's going to have huge ramifications in conference. Yeah,

(01:27:23):
this should be this should be a fun game. This
I don't know what's the total out on this. This
one's got to be a high scoring affair. Enough, fifty
four and a half the TCU one, you feel a
little low a little bit. Well, it's dropped because of
the wind. So again that and we talked about the
Oklahoma State Texas game. That total dropped from sixty five
I'm seeing now fifty nine. It dropped even a little

(01:27:44):
more this morning. I actually put a little nugget on
the first half under in that Texas Oklahoma State game.
But the final point I'll make about u c l
A Oregon before I give you a little bit more
juice here on TCU Kansas State. This is one of
those public dog games. U c l A is, in
my opinion, the biggest public dog. I had one bookmaker
this week say it's the king of public dogs. I know,

(01:28:04):
bet MGM, the king of sports books. This U c
l A team the king of public dogs today. The
books need Oregon to cover this game, and I usually
like to be on the side of the sports books.
Wink wink, All right, tc U Kansas State. So, Brian,
you you mentioned it during the top you know, when
you were starting to break this game down the momentum
for TCU. They play SMU in a big rivalry game,

(01:28:25):
Dallas rivalry, and then they play three straight conference opponents.
They win all the games, but they don't do it convincingly.
They just kind of get over the hump in those games.
And you know, they didn't cover against Oklahoma State. They
could have in overtime. They barely covered against Kansas depending
on what side of the number you got on there
with the seven. And to me, it's Deuce Fawn. And
you know, we're gonna talk a lot about Max Saw

(01:28:46):
Jim Duggan, but Deuce Fawn averaging one point nine yards
per team play, which is a very even when Deuce
Fawn doesn't touch the ball, every time Kansas State runs
a play, he's averaging almost two yards. So it's just
he's the guy to look for with this Kansas State team.
Major Martinez of course gonna draw a lot of attention.
Kansas State's offensive line trenches, trenches, trenches this time of

(01:29:06):
the year, top twenty an opportunity rate. What does opportunity
rate mean? It's when your offensive line creates three or
more yards of space and you're running backs able to
create three or more yards from the line of scrimmage.
Kansas State is very good at giving their backs an
opportunity to gain yards at the second level. TCU on
the other side of the ball, outside the top one

(01:29:27):
hundred in those defensive line categories, stuff rate, havoc. I
think Kansas State will control the line of scrimmage. Then
you throw in twenty wins. What does TCU rely on
more than anyone else? They throw the football at a
ten percent higher rate than Kansas State does. And oh,
by the way, Kansas State's defense top ten in e
p A per passed. They're great at keeping things in

(01:29:49):
front of them. And then the wind I think will
be their best friend today. I really liked this spot
for kse State. I know the game is in Fort Worth,
I know it's a home crowd, a blackout, whatever they're
gonna do there with the horn Frogs. But to me,
this Kansas State defense and the running game, the physicality
might be a little too much for TCU to handle.
This is so difficult to predict, right, Like, if you

(01:30:09):
like either side, it's gonna be like by a razor margin.
But if TCU can throw the football, I mean, everybody's watching.
Quentin Johnson right, we we've seen Clinton Johnson this season.
This is the hottest receiver in football right now. Twenty
two catches on the year through injured, eighties six yards.
I mean that's the tippy top of his position. And

(01:30:31):
then to your point, though, Case State great coverage unit,
easily in the top top fifteen. Maybe in terms of
covering up receivers. I don't know if they've seen anything
like this, but weather may help them. Yeah, this is
this is going to be another fun one. Can't wait.
You know it's crazy is TCU tc US defense. They
give up a lot of big plays. They create a

(01:30:52):
lot of big plays with their offense, but they give
up a lot of big plays. They've given up at
least five and a half twenty plus yards uh, twenty
plus yard gains per game. That sounds like a mouthful,
but think about twenty plus yards. They give up at
least five and a half of those on average per game.
They give up at least two thirty plus gains per game.

(01:31:15):
And so if you look at Kansas State's offense, it's
not diversified. I would say, you know they're gonna light up,
They're gonna run the ball down your throat, if the
elements are such as we're expecting, this is a TCU
defensively please stop up right, please stop these big plays
from happening. And I think that's a big part of
today's game. We'll see if they can do it or not.

(01:31:37):
But we talked about it, Jared, and you alluded to it.
The elements as we're expecting them to be. They certainly
favor Kansas State in this one because the passing game
is a much bigger part of TCUs approach than it
is Kansas States. Yeah, it really is. And this line's
moved a bunch. Kansas State's a very popular dog this
week too, So I don't want to beat my you

(01:31:59):
know chest that um, you know, the only one think
in case they can win this game out right, there's
a lot of people in the market this week that
have bet this line down from six now down to
three and a half. I would rather take the point,
and I know the total is, you know, lower than
we would expect, which makes the points even more to premium.
I would be surprised if TCU shows us the same

(01:32:19):
explosiveness on offense that we've seen in prior weeks. Yeah, yeah,
I'm just impressed. With what they've been able to do. Again,
another team like the Tennessee Volunteers that have just snuck
up on us in terms of the national conversation. This
will be their fourth Top twenty five opponent in as

(01:32:40):
many weeks. UH. If they beat the UH Kansas State,
the horn Frogs will have beaten four ranked opponents. The
only other team actually who's done that is Tennessee. So
it's just like, now again, does the AP polling represent
everything in college football? Is that the measuring stick in

(01:33:01):
college football? Absolutely not? But are is it a barometer
of who's near the top of and of FBS football? Yeah? Sure, so,
I mean it says something about the type of team,
the type of commitment they've had to have continued success,
and um yeah, I mean the one thing that can
get in their way, The one thing that can get

(01:33:22):
in their way is if the weather somehow neutralizes Quentin
Johnston and they can't seem to get the ball to
him because the winds are too whipping too fiercely. They
better have a scheme where they're keeping the ball closer
the line of scrimmage because you need to get that
man involved for this to be a win against case state. Yeah,
I'll just say real fast. Remember the old Bill Parcels quote,

(01:33:44):
which is you are what your record says you are.
I altered that a little bit, you know, and I
put the little ellipses, the little dot dot dot. I
always say you are what your record says you are
to this point. That doesn't mean that's what you are
going forward like that. That's beautiful. But I look at
TCU because I agree with you. Rich props to them

(01:34:06):
six and oh it's been a great start there, a
top ten team, but going forward, I can't get out
of my head. Kansas is backup quarterback flexing doing the
two arm like you know. I'm the man throwing touchdown
passes coming in for Jalen Daniels a couple of weeks ago.
That shouldn't be happening. We saw that guy really struggle

(01:34:28):
against Oklahoma Last's throwing dimes and TCUs defense. That shouldn't happen.
So I don't think TCU is built to last. I
will say I overall, I agree with your sentiment about
you are who your record says you are to this point. However,
the hotel room I'm sitting in this this is what

(01:34:49):
it is to this point into the future. Always always
don't name the brand of the hotel ridge I might

We don't. You have picked the correct looking cranny of
that hotel room that you're just magnificent the spot. I

Management Committee sounds like they're in a fancy rich Orinberger
hotel over there, in a corporate red and committee. They
met on Thursday and they're trying to hammer out this
new twelve team playoff format. And they've got a couple

(01:36:59):
of roadblocks in the way, trying to find TV windows
that don't compete with the NFL. You got final exams
going on. We gotta we gotta work stuff out. One
of the sticking points though, is trying to fit in
the new year's six bowl games into the playoff format.
And I feel like our technical director Iowa Sam tearing

(01:37:20):
out his hair watching the Iowa Hawkeyes when I hear
about we're trying to shoehorn in the new year's six
bowl games. Let me tell you something. Screw the ball games.
That's what I have to say. They don't work in
favor of the college football playoff. They hold it back.
Like just imagine if it's like the NFL and you
have one game that's at a neutral site and all

(01:37:41):
the other games are at home stadiums. That's what makes
college football so great, that's what would keep the regular
season so meaningful. If you pile up wins, you get
a home playoff game later on. Imagine if the NFL
would have what college football is trying to have. A
imagine if wild Card weekend was at home stadiums and

(01:38:04):
then everything else in the NFL was at a neutral site.
That would be stupid. And that's exactly what college football
is trying to do. I think there should be one
neutral site game. It's the championship game in college football.
Everything else in the twelve team playoff home stadiums. It
would be awesome. And yet they're like, let's just do

(01:38:25):
one week of that. It's silly, Yeah, it is. It
is a little bit silly. But here's what I will
say though about the bull season in general, the further
you expand the playoff, the more contracted the bowl season
will be. And I'm I'm not necessarily, um, I'm not
necessarily a fan of giving players less of an opportunity

(01:38:48):
to play in a Bowl game, but I am a
fan of if you're going to do that, you better
make it more worth their while in today's climate. Because also,
part of the reason why people don't tune in for
for ball games anymore is be as the players don't
want to play in bowl games, any of the players
who have a chance to extend their career to the
NFL for obvious reason, because they're taking a serious injury

(01:39:08):
risk by going out there with their teammates even though
they want to play. So how do you fix that?
Check this out. So, even if you expand to twelve
or sixteen teams, and I like your idea of playing
some of these games on campuses, and you could still
attach Bowl sponsors and all that stuff to it. You know,
it doesn't matter where the games are played as much.
It just matters that you know, sponsors are involved and

(01:39:29):
they're getting their you know, tostitos mentions. Um. But even
if this is expanded, there should still be a bowl season,
and I think each bowl game should have two sponsors attached.
One sponsor pays the schools, the other sponsor pays the
players through n I L. I'll give you a perfect example.

(01:39:50):
Let's let's have the Peanut, Butter and Jelly Bowl brought
to you by jeff In Smuckers. You know, and and
you know, the players go home happy. There's a reason
in that they're they're playing in this bowl game. You know,
even the players who have an NFL career ahead of them,
you're gonna be a third round draft pick, Well, you're
about to have your pockets padded before you go into

(01:40:10):
the draft. Um, because you're playing in the PB and
J Bowl. Right. It makes everybody happy in this new world,
this new circus that is college football. And I think
it would increase the intrigue for not only the players,
but also people who are interested in watching bowls. There's
more on the line. You're gonna have better finishes, You're
gonna have better output. I love that take. Can we

(01:40:34):
bottle that take up and sell it and use it
as a sponsorship gift for the PB and J Bowl.
It's a fantastic It's a fantastic way to add incentive. Right,
that's the world that we are living in in college
football today, incentivizing these players to now do something that
they don't want to do. Right, we all have to

(01:40:56):
go to our jobs every day. Well, we're incentivized by
the paycheck that we get at the end of the
week or at the end of the month, however you're paid.
So I do think there is a level of incentive
that needs to be baked into this new world order
of bowl games that we are about to enter in.
The Bowl games have been a polarizing topic for a

(01:41:17):
while now. People think there's too many of them. Other
people think there's too much. I like the ball games.
I usually do my best pandicapping during bowl games. I
I just it suits my style and how we match
up teams that haven't played each other with no common opponents.
It it does breed for some pretty good you know
line value and and and you know betting value. But

(01:41:39):
from a from an incentive standpoint, I understand why a
lot of players don't like to play in these games
and why the bowl system has been crumbling, you know
for the last few years. It needs a breath of
fresh air. And maybe again that word incentivizing players might
be the way to do it. Hey, look, I'll just
say real fast, I'm cool with bowl games. I'm not

(01:42:00):
anti bowl games. You want to have your non playoff
bowl games, knock yourself out, great, I'll watch him, love him,
i might bet on him, i might lose money or whatever.
I'm gonna enjoy them. But when it comes specifically to
the college football playoff, I don't want them. I don't
want them. Would you rather have what we saw at
nil in Stadium and that atmosphere or you want to

(01:42:20):
put it in a neutral site like the Cotton Bull.
I don't care about your bowl games. Like when it
comes to the playoff, give me home atmospheres and Alabama. Hey,
that's an incentive to win more games in the regular
season where you're not on the road in a Kneeland stadium.
If it's playoff time makes the regular season, it's a
freaking win win all across the board for college football fans.

(01:42:44):
It's just these bowl relationships and the big time dinners
and the handshakes and it's exhibitions. To me, should be
played on neutral sites, which is what the ball games are,
the ones that matter. Yeah, put him at the home sites.
Totally on board with that. How about a home college
football playoff game in Happy Valley in early January. There's

(01:43:10):
so many great atmosphere freezing cold but insides that, but
you opened the door to more sponsorship opportunities for companies
who want to attach themselves to college football again involved
without expanding useless games. Right, you don't need to create
some sort of matchup between I don't know, the seventh

(01:43:30):
ray team in the A c C taking on the
seventh Ray team in the Big twelve. To make sure
that you know, Oreo cookie gets mentioned, like you can
you you have the rich orn Berger like menu, right
p B. J Oreos my game, the steak and eggs

(01:43:54):
brought to you by you know, Dairy Farman. I don't
know Ruth Chris Steakhouse, just like sign me up. But
that's what I'm saying, Like you could, you could have
your cake and eat it to the college football Playoff
will be its own separate sponsorable entity, because we know
college football is all about money, whether it's on the
you know, the corporate side or the betting side. And

(01:44:16):
then in the bowl season, you pair up sponsors, you
play the you pay the players on this side, you
pay the schools on this side, and you have the
Jack and Coke Bowl, brought to you by Jack Daniels
and Coca Cola, and everybody goes home happy. By the way,
you know who's a big Jack and Coke guy? Who's Isaac.

(01:44:37):
I don't know if that's true or not. Yeah, right
here with I am hold the coke. Actually gotta be honest.
We started college football number five Clemson Fellas has officially
confirmed starting linebacker Barrett Carter will not play today against
fourteenth Mike Syracuse due to a concussion. Kick off at
the top of the hour. Clemson a fourteen point favorite

(01:44:58):
for this one. According to Bett m GM in the
NFL e Spot Reports, Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Grennard
going on injured reserve after hurting his calf in practice
this week. He's expected to be out four to six weeks.
In Game three at the National League Championship Series Friday night,
the Phillies defeated the Padres for to two. Philadelphia leaves
the series two games to one and will host game

(01:45:19):
for tonight at seven forty five Eastern. First at five
oh seventy eastern. Game three of the American League Championship
Series as the New York Yankees host the Houston Astros,
with the Astros leading the series two games to nine.
In the NBA on Friday night, Nicola Yokich had a
triple double is Denver what at Golden State one to
one twenty three. Damian Lillard scored forty one in Portland's

(01:45:41):
overtime win over the Phoenix Suns. John Morant dropped forty
nine ass Memphis Grizzlies what at Houston one nine to
one twenty two, and Utah one in Minnesota in overtime
one thirty two to one twenty six, despite Rudy Gobert
getting twenty three rebounds for Minnesota against his former team
finally fellas On an NHL note, last night, the Seattle

(01:46:05):
Kraken what a Colorado three to two, and after the victory,
took a subtle dig at former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell
Wilson by tweeting, and I quote cracking country, let's glide
to that is trying way too hard, But they did

(01:46:28):
that is Russell Wilson is probably like, I see that.
That's I gotta respect the effort here because I try
way too hard that's probably what Russell Wilson. It is
Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by bet MGM.
Be sure to follow bet MGM across all socials at
bet MGM. Let's do this countdown. Okay, So as we

(01:46:56):
stand right now, I'm not gonna bombard you with a
ton of odds. C J. Stroud, Ohio State quarterback minus
one ten so basically even money, Hendon Hooker plus four fifty,
just a little under five to one odds. Those are
the front runners. Now, I know you guys, going into

(01:47:17):
last weekend's game against Alabama, you're like, Hendon Hooker fourteen
to one, fourteen to whatnot bad? How about four and
a half to one? Now you're still filling Hendon Hooker. Well, again,
like Jared said, uh, I want to say it's a
month ago. Now. If you feel like there's value there,
then go for it. But I kind of feel like

(01:47:39):
the balls get get found out at some point and
in that you know, the c J. Strouds of the world,
the Bryce Young's of the world, who are are still
in this conversation even though Alabama just took that out
to the volunteers. You know you can you can obviously
get better odds if you go further down on the board.

(01:48:00):
But yeah, look, Hendon Hooker, you love them last week,
if you still like them this week, there's still value
if you're positive that the volunteers are who their record
says they are. And then I'll add on the back
end of that to this point. So yeah, look, I
am still way more in the C. J. Stroud camp

(01:48:21):
than I would be the Hendon Hooker camp. But um,
you know, futures bet at your own risk. If you
want to sprinkle a half unit on it. Yeah, I
really think it's still Stroud or bust. And you know,
now you're getting a little bit of value with Bryce Young.
You know at eight to one and again you want
to buy low. And that's how I view these markets.

(01:48:43):
I view these players like stocks. And you don't buy
Apple when it's had a ten percent move in one day.
Usually you wait till it's down and then you buy
Apple stock, right, So that's kind of how I view
Bryce Young. I think Alabama will be there at the
end of the day, and I think at eighteen to
one you can make a case that that is the
lowest he'll be for the rest of the year. Barring,

(01:49:06):
of course injury c J. Strout. To me though, it
just at this point, as long as Ohio State wins
out and they don't even have to win the COLLEGEBA playoff,
all they have to do is get to the College
Fotball playoff, I think he is the winner, hands down.
Just give him the trophy. Now. I think this two guys,
where sometimes you hear a lot about closing line value,

(01:49:28):
and that can prevent you from winning. At times, it's
good to be aware of it and it can help
you along the way, but sometimes it gets in the
way of winds. For instance, let's say L s U today.
Let's say you're on L s U and it's minus
two now when it was plus one. If you're thinking
L s U by at least a field goal, then

(01:49:49):
bad L s U minus two, right, who cares that
the line has moved? And I think the same thinking
can apply to Heisman odds, where you might think, man,
I could have gotten c J. Stroud at plus two
hundred or plus to fifty whatever it was. Now it's
minus one ten pass and it's like, if you think
he's gonna be the guy and he ends up being
the guy, you're gonna win, like, don't let the closing

(01:50:10):
line value work against you, and sometimes betters do that.
I agree, Well, what's what's so fascinating about the way
you're talking about it. It's like, yeah, if it's the
short thing, go for it um versus the approach that
Jared's talking about, which is, hey, if you can get
value after a loss on Bryce Young, that's that's when

(01:50:31):
the Irons the hottest in terms of a futures play,
because if you could gather up, say, I don't know
whatever your threshold is uh for for funny money plays,
like if you're willing to put fifty bucks on an
eighteen to one spot for Bryce Young and you were
all in on the fourteen to one Hendon Hooker bet

(01:50:51):
a week ago, and you know, maybe maybe you want
to sprinkle a little bit on you know, core Um
should he all of a sudden fire up the board
because Mischi gins undefeated come to the end of the season.
Like if if if you're playing with money that you're
willing to lose and you're getting great odds and one
of those hits, well it pays off dividends and obviously

(01:51:12):
covers up whatever whatever whatever funny money you were willing
to sprinkle on these bets in the first place. At
least that's the way I kind of look at futures bets.
It's it's got to be money you're willing to lose
in some ways, unless you're like you, like you said Brian,
like you're looking at a sure thing and you're like, well,
it's gonna be this guy, and there's no other way

(01:51:34):
I can see it. Yeah, Yeah, it's a portfolio. And
and again with the Heisman Trophy, you can have multiple
people on the podium and at that point the market
gets trimmed down. And let's say you do have a C. J.
Stroud handed hooker at Bryce Young ticket in your back
pocket from various points in the season when you bought low,

(01:51:56):
and if all three of those tickets have gained value
over the core us of the twelve weeks season, then
you will be sitting in a very advantageous position calmed
Heisman Night with those tickets in your back pockets. So
to me, a futures bet, it's hard for the average
gambler to really get engaged because you're making a bet
and you're not getting that instant gratification. It is a

(01:52:18):
labor of love. It is a patient approach, but I
do like to collect tickets and build a portfolio like
a financial manager, and the hopefully at the end of
the season. I am sitting ahead of the market as
they go into the postseason, if it's a playoff bet
or if it's a you know, national championship. Better in
this case, Heisman bet going to the podium. So there's

(01:52:39):
different ways to play it. There's no wrong way to
play the futures market because the odds can change very dramatically.
It's as and value. Sorry, I just like how you
said I like to collect. I do. It's kind of
like the evil hands, like you know, collect collected that crashes. Yeah.

(01:53:00):
He's Jared Smith, lead betting analyst from picks wise dot com.
Rich Hornberger, staying in a swanky hotel over there, Penn State,
all American over and where yet Reno there Rich the
biggest little city in the world. Yeah, I walked under
the arch last night. Guys, feeling lucky. Oh boy, go okay,
I'm Brian No coming up next. We put all of

(01:53:21):
our facts, figures, research data to the test. Time to
make some picks, and there is a game we've alluded
to it a little bit. What's that having a little
bit more around the corner as well. It's Fox Sports
Radios count Down to Kickoff presented by bet MGM. Smells
like ball kickoffs are coming, Sue, and we're leading you

(01:53:45):
up to that. This is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to
Kickoff presented by Bett mg I. The kick of sports
books once again. Here's Brian no, Rich Hornberger and Jared
SMI you jermy. It is Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff,

(01:54:07):
presented by bet MGM. Just about ten minutes away from kickoff.
By the way, big shout out to the crew. Isaac
Lohan Crown on the updates, Iowa Sam technical producer, done
a tremendous job, and our guy Rob g Rob Gara
sitting in with the future Laker himself. Hashtag it everything,
love it up on game. At the top of the hour,

(01:54:29):
Lavari Errington, t J. Hushman's Out of Plaxico Burst. They
do an awesome job to get you all set for
a full weekend of ball. All right, it's the moment
of truth. Time to make some picks. Let's do it
rapid fire, all right, Jared, We'll start with you three
picks against the spread? Where you going this? Uh? Today?

(01:54:52):
Going today? I don't know where I was going last week,
but a little bit of an upgrade two and one,
ten and eight on this season. So again incrementally, slowly
but surely back over the mark. I'm going with Clemson.
I got thirteen and a half. I laid it with
the Tigers today. Syracuses suspect guys. First of all, they're
all a CEC corner. Garrett Williams out today. I think

(01:55:14):
the Clemson offense is going to have some space and
the bad numbers to me on Syracuses defense despite a
really easy strength of schedule, and d J you, we're
seeing the passing numbers improve, turnover worthy plays going down.
He's better as a runner. I think the Clemson offense
is a lot better than people think now. Dido Papers
mentioned it getting to bowl eligibility this week coach or

(01:55:36):
six and oh, you have a chance to win the
a SEC Bowl eligibility doesn't matter right now. But I
think he's kind of tempering expectations for a team with
their win total at three and a half. It is
important that Barrett Carter linebacker, Key Clempson linebacker out today,
with a concussion, and Clemson's defense has to play better.
Twenty four miss tackles last week. I think they do.
I'll lay it with the Tigers Oregon. I'm laying it
with the Ducks today too. They're digging in the trenches. Guys.

(01:55:59):
This organ offense of line third in average line yards created.
They've allowed just one sack all season, and U c
l A. You look at the offenses that they have
phased pretty decent, but on the defensive side, all Cupcakes, Washington,
Utah below expectations this year. I really do think Oregon
is gonna be the toughest opponent US has faced all season,

(01:56:19):
and I think we will see a very impressive Boone
Knicks home bo Knicks. We love it. Nine touchdown snow
picks in the Friendly Confines this year, and I'm also
taking l s U. It's a pick up. Now. I
laid a point. It shouldn't matter who have the Rebels
played this year, guys. Their strength of schedule is nine
in the country out of a hundred and thirty one
FBS teams Troy, Central, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Tulsa, Kentucky Bandy.

(01:56:43):
They were down double digits to the Commodorees at one point.
Auburn rushed for over six yards for Carrie last week.
I think this Ole Miss offensive line they're not good
in the trenches, guys, and this L s U receiver
groups really starting to come on. K Shawn Booty six
for Buck fifteen last week. I'll take L s UA
of it, love it. I am nine and twelve on
the season. I'm one in two last week. I need

(01:57:06):
to go three and oh this week so I can
even out this record. Okay, let's do it. Clemson their
favorite two touchdowns, their hosting the Orange. You just heard
Jared Dog about this. Nobody can believe the Syracuse is undefeated,
including Syracuse. So I've got the home favorites. The Tiger
cover the fourth team, the hawk Eyes. Their defenses among

(01:57:28):
the nation's best. Again this season. UH teams are scoring
less than ten points against the Hawk Eyes. Ohio States
favored by almost thirty points. That's way too many. I'm
holding my nose and I'm taking the twenty nine and
a half and I'm flying with the hawk Eyes. All right,
I'm all in on the Angry Bowl in State College.
It's happening in Pennsylvania today. It's brought to you by

(01:57:50):
the Golden Gophers two game losing streak and the pounding
that Penn State took at the hands of Michigan a
week ago. Nitney Lions favored by five and a half
and their men atter than Minnesota. I'm laying the five
and a hook with the Lions. Okay, I'm twelve and
nine too and one last week. That's right, Yeah, I'm
laying the six on the road. Spencer Sanders dinged up.

(01:58:13):
I am going to look at a stinky line. I
think Baylor only three and three, their favored by ten,
favored by ten against Kansas. I think that stinks. I'm
laying it with the Bears. Give me Baylor. And also
Shamus mentioned this hold your nose, to hold your nose,
special you T Martin plus thirty eight and a half
take them let down game? Alright, real fast, let's do this.

(01:58:39):
This is the best play of the day. Al Right,
doing fast, Jared, what do you have you? T Martin?
Quote Spot of the year from Shamus Vickey. Let's go
fire free, Les Troy the ball
