Speaker 1 (00:00):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio? Are you college fans?
Welcome to the biggest tailgate party in the nation, Fox
Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by Bat MGM, the
(00:20):
King of sports book. We're setting you up with the
information you need to watch your team win. Let's go.
We're here to break it all down. This is Fox
Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented by bet mg app.
We're live from your tail game. Here's Brian No, former
(00:42):
Penn State All American, Rich Mornberger and picks Wise lead
betting analyst Jared Smith. Oh what's going on? Everybody? Welcome
in here. We are fired up for a day of
limited ball, but looking forward to the poll season. The
play off matchups still fired up today. And I'll tell
(01:03):
you what, man, you talk about a night night night cap.
How about the FCS playoffs were incarnate? Word beat Sacramento
State sixty six to sixty three. That's right, a hundred
and twenty nine combined points to get us fired up
and ready to go in the morning. How you guys
doing feeling? Great game of the year. It really was.
(01:26):
I'm not even joking my favorite game in the year.
I'll tell you what. I just want to know what
Shamus McGhee was doing there in the game. Yeah, he
joins us every weekend, and my goodness, Yeah, that's like
his Super Bowl FCF combatants. Guys that teams that he's
bet on in the past. Oh man, I love the
(01:47):
Shamus special. I can't wait to see what he cooks
up today. That I was. I was up really late
watching that one. I couldn't turn it off. It was
appointment television. You were up late in Are you in
Vegas right now? J? Yeah? Yeah, you're a plate on
the West coast. I'm a plate. It's almost three am. Yeah.
If you're on that game, you're you're You're a real
(02:09):
one college couldn't turn it off if you're if you're
awake right now listening to this show, and you are
were awake last night watching that game, you deserve like
the college football Is there like a dundee for like
the office that we can give out to our our
viewers and our fans. That that that's a diehard award
(02:30):
right there. That's impressive stuff. There was in game cash
to be one of the over that you probably went
nuts with that over right? Isn't that funny? Though I'm
sitting there like, man ninety two and a half, am
I really gonna bet nine? It was. It wasn't even close. Like,
there was not a moment in that game. I think
(02:51):
if you bet the regular over that, you didn't feel
good about it cashing. Yeah, pretty yeah, yeah right. The
funny a sign was there was about I should have
looked it up before the show. But there were about
twelve minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and um,
Sacramento State could have gone for two to be down
(03:12):
by three, and they just kicked the extra point. They're like,
screw it, We'll just stay down by four. Okay, Wow,
there's gonna be a lot more scoring. That was a
sign of a lot more scoring to come. Um, but
let's turn our attention right now. Advanced sneak peek into
the playoff matchups. Just as far as right now, we'll
dive into the matchups and the nuts and bolts and
(03:34):
all that type of stuff, uh as we go along
the show today. But just surface level, did the committee
get it right? It's number one Georgia against number four
Ohio State. Ohio State would be the one team that
could be debated. And it's number two Michigan against number
three TCU I gold stars across the board for the committee.
(03:55):
I think that if you're looking for the best four teams,
that's way more subject active. If you're looking for the
for most deserving teams, I don't know how you make
an argument for somebody else. I think the committee got
it right. Yeah, yeah, I I think I agree with
you as well. It's um, it's a strange thing to
agree with the committee because I've done that so so rarely.
(04:18):
But had you know Alabama's you know, Nick Sabans jumped
into the mix based off of the plea that he
gave during the Big Ten Championship game, I would have
been I would have been baffled because Ohio State's sitting
there at five and you assume if something happens, which
(04:39):
things happened, uh and discord and chaos reigned like the
PAC twelve championship and USC losing to the tune it
did to Utah that it would be Ohio steat Ohio State,
who was in the warm seat getting into the playoffs.
And that's exactly what happened. Look, I'm not I'm not
necessarily always about fair and this. I realized that life
(05:01):
is not always fair, you know. We we talk about
it in sports, like there are subjective calls that could
ruin a game for one side or the other. P I, holding,
you know, those sort of things where you could call
pass interference on virtually every single pass, You could call
holding on virtually every single play pass or run, and
(05:21):
and if you just call it in the right moment
or the wrong moment, depending on what side you're on,
it ruins the game. So that's not necessarily fair, and
it's a part of the game. It's built into all
of this. But when you have something that's slotted, when
you have one, two, five, six, seven, all the way
down to and you're looking at it from an objective approach,
if if a team falls out, then the fifth team
(05:44):
should probably move in. That's exactly what happens. So how
much argument should I should I come up with? The
only thing I will say is the fact that Ohio
State earned their way into a playoff sitting at home,
you know, popping popcorn, hoping that USC loss while they
were doing for a championship. That part of this whole
equation is still a little suspect to me. Yeah, I
(06:05):
think you summed it up really well the right My
mom always said, oh, you go to bed without dinner, Well,
life isn't fair, right, you know, or go to bed
without dessert, and you know, life isn't always fair. Sometimes
you get punished doing something good. You know, it's just
life just doesn't always give you the fair shake. Sometimes
sometimes you get a bad result. I think this was
(06:26):
a good result. I think this really does show that
the committee did its job. So I I I'm okay
with the four teams that we have. I the Alabama
argument was fascinating, right, Like you get saving that goes
on TV the night of after TC loses and he's like, well,
(06:48):
he'd be favored against all of these teams, right. I
can't do the sabing you know, Southern accent there, but
it just it it felt like one of those arguments
that you make as a kid when you're trying to
convince your mom to do something for you and you
know you're not gonna get it. And it's maybe a
logical argument on on on the surface, but at the
end of the day, I think the teams that had
(07:10):
the four best seasons from start to finish, regardless of
who would be favored on a neutral field I think
ended up in the College while playoffs, and I think
that's the goal of this. Maybe when we expand, the
parameters will change. But right now, you have to give
precedent to the teams that did it throughout the long
(07:30):
haul of the twelve their twelve game season and TCU,
you know plus one right, you know, even the thirteenth
game was right there until the bitter end. And that's
been there vibe the entire year. And I'm glad that
the committee also didn't drop them. I got a lot
of heat for that, you know. I I said, oh,
you know, the committee got it right. I tweeted that
(07:51):
out on Saturday night and I was like, oh, how
did how can it not drop TCU? Well, because you
can't move. Ohio stayed ahead of TCU, right, like they
didn't even play in their conference championship game. Like you
have to give TCU some credit, regardless of what their
full team might look like, you know, pound for pound
against an Alabama or on Ohio State. You have to
(08:14):
at least give them some credit. And I warmed up
to this TCU team over the last few weeks. I
was sour on them that Texas game. I was ready
to throw them out with the bathwater, right, and it
just they they grew on me, They warmed my heart
like Scrooge in the in the Christmas in the Christmas Story.
But I do think a big picture, Absolutely, the committee
(08:36):
got it right. Max Dugan almost passing out due to exhaustion.
How can you for a guy like that? Yeah, it
was great. And I keep going back to what's the
argument if it isn't this order in these four teams?
Your argument is, Hey, games don't really matter, you know,
(08:56):
consequences like end results don't really matter. Alabama are losing twice,
we still think they're better than Ohio State, or we
think they're better than TCU. We'll guess what. You might
be wrong. You know, you might be wrong, like how
are we going to base who gets in who gets
out based on who we just thinking our gut is better?
Like results have to matter. It's the same thing with USC.
(09:18):
And I totally hear you, Rich. I don't like either
that USC got to its conference championship game. Meanwhile Ohio
State didn't. Maybe Ohio State loses their conference championship game.
Let's just say somehow, some way, Ohio State is playing
Utah instead. Of USC. Ohio State might have gotten worked
the same way. We'll never know that, but what we
(09:39):
do know is that USC not only lost, they got
destroyed against Utah. And that has to matter. And so
when they have two losses Ohio State has one, it's
just you gotta make some tough decisions. And uh, there's
only room for four. There are four chairs, and there
are more than four teams that are trying to sit
in those seats. Someone's to get left out in the cold.
(10:01):
And it was USC, it was Alabama this year. Just
win more games. I don't have a bleeding heart for
these teams that have it in their hands. It's this
idea of like, oh, the judges screwed us. It's like
you left it in the judges hands. Win more games.
I'm not gonna feel sorry for you. It's you know
what the college football playoffs. The college football playoffs were
(10:22):
built to fail, right, This is a pinata, Like we're
waiting for it to burst so that everybody could have
more fun. That's exactly what this is. It's just a
giant piniata. And finally we're getting a couple of hacks,
and we're getting closer and closer to the candy. Here
comes boom. Now we have twelve games coming in and
(10:45):
that's exactly what this needs me because Brian, like you said, Jared,
like you know, when you have deserving teams on the
outside looking in with fair gripes like USC who I
think I have the fairest gripe even though they got
worked by Utah, it's it's it's real. That loss was real,
you know, So you have to do something with that information.
(11:06):
So you say, okay, well, now you're a two loss
team going against Ohio State who also got worked in
a loss and got embarrassed in the final game of
their season. But they were perfect up until then, so
that has to count two. So how do you quantify
all this? How do you make it all fit? You can't.
It was built to fail in the first place. So
what they're doing is they're expanding, like this playoff should
(11:27):
have been larger in the first place. But this was
the test. This was to see if it was even
going to rate, if it was even going to drum
up interest, and how much interest it was going to
drum up. And they've actually done a nice job, those
in control of the college Football Playoff waiting until it
was just absurdly, it was too long of a weight.
And now finally it's here, we have news of expansion,
(11:50):
and a lot of these arguments will be diminished later
on when we're discussing, hey thirteen verse fourteen, not getting
in or getting in, because that's that's gonna be a
much lower roar getting attention when it's the top four,
when it is the tippy top four. Yeah, this whole
thing is a pinata and people are are taking their
strongest swings out of it, and you can see, you
(12:12):
know that it's getting a little weak around the belly.
Maybe one of the legs are coming off. There comes wow, Rich,
you are on o. That was the classical, the classical
right there. Yeah, I was riveted during that little monologue there. Honestly,
I was ready. I was ready to beat my own
pinata here getting I need some candy this morning. That
(12:34):
was that. But that really was a great euphemism metaphor
for what it is. Is it ironic that this is
the year that I think the pinata finally is bursting
and this is also the same year that we are
getting the expansion news, Like, I don't think that's a coincidence, right,
that's kind of God's way of the football, God's way
(12:56):
of pullying with us and tinkering with our hearts and
minds when we when we tune in for this, I mean,
it really is like a soap opera every week. Um,
the Nick Saban I recommend if you haven't watched it,
go back and and and turn on your your internet
machine and go watch the Nick Saban interview last week
(13:19):
on Fox. It was it was really it was like
a Fox News pundit coming on trying to lobby for
his or her respective you know, cause it was really
it was. It was truly riveting TV. Um. Yeah, when
we expand it, I don't know what the argument like
we like. I'm sure there will be other arguments that
will be made when we expand, but I agree that
(13:42):
when we're at when we when we talk about and
we scrutinized the top four, top five, top six teams,
it's a little more tricky because there's not as much
room for er. Like, let's be honest, I do think
Alabama had a case. I don't think they were I
don't think Nick Saban was wrong for lobbying and trying
to convey into the committee that his side was the
right side. There definitely was a case to be made
(14:05):
because I agree with his argument in in theory, if
you take Alabama and you take them on a neutral
and you stack them up against the other four teams
in the College Football Playoff that they are outside of
that realm, they would likely be favored against half of them,
at least definitely TCU in Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia. They
probably a little slighter favorite against Michigan. I think they'd
(14:26):
be an underdog against Georgia. But that theory does pass
the smell test, right, Well, we're one of the best teams.
If you stacked us up against Team X, Y, and Z,
we would be favored, so the odds makers and you know,
thank you Nick for giving us the the uh you
know the power here, the odds makers giving the power that, yeah,
(14:49):
we would make you a favorite. Absolutely. But then there's
another side of it that does have to give credence
to what these other teams did during the prior twelve games.
And Nick spun was on the wrong side of some
of those unlucky bounces of the ball this year, and
that's just the way the cookie crumbles, right, That's literally
(15:09):
what my mom would say to me when I wanted
extra dessert. No, Jared, that's how the cookie crumbles, and
I would go to bed and huffy and puffy. And
that's kind of what Nick Saban had to do the
last weekend. I'll say, I wish bets work that way.
Saban's argument is, Hey, but we're still better in spite
of US not kicking the field goal against Tennesse and
(15:30):
Tennessee kicking the field goal against US. I wish the
money I lost on Bama that game I would still win.
I still win the better team, So I okay, it's
the result doesn't matter. Hey, be sure to check out

Coming up next, it is the trend of trends. The
(16:14):
ball games have nothing on this trend. We will dive
in head first. Coming up next, it is Fox Sports

Welcome back to Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented

today and use code countdown for a special offer. That's
code countdown in the bet mgm app. Okay, fellas, So
we've got the trend of trends here in the Army
Navy game, so service academies that play each other since
two thousand and five, the under is forty three nine
(17:21):
and one. A lot of running clock. Clock keeps running
as well, and there's not a lot of scoring the under.
Actually an Army Navy has cashed in sixteen consecutive seasons.
Sixty years we've hit the under. This is the year, guys,
(17:41):
you go contrarian this year. I don't know, but the
total is thirty two and a half at bet MGM.
And what's interesting is if the total, if that had
been the total over these last sixteen years, the over
would actually be nine and seven. Yeah, that's the key.
So that's that's the question is is this too low
(18:03):
to take the under today? My goodness, you know what
you got me all of a sudden thinking about, um,
the weather out there. Uh, do either of you have
an idea of what it's going to be like during
the game today, because it always seems to factor whether
it's cold or rain or wind, and that can definitely
tamp down scoring. But sixteen straight, I mean, guys, you know,
(18:25):
I look, I'm not a believer in in you know,
things being faded to work out in an exact sort
of way, But that is a ridiculous run straight. It's
it's it's absurd, but it's it's it's logical. When you
think about the Navy and the Army Academy is going
(18:46):
against each other. This is they know the game that
the whole nation's watching, that nobody really picks sides unless
you have a specific allegiance to one side. The other.
You have a parent, a grandfather, uncle, and an who
served in the army or the navy. But but the
discipline that you see during these games, nobody screw it up.
(19:09):
Like you know. There are sometimes explosive plays, but they're
few and far between, so you are really truly just
watching a ground game. Two teams attacking each other for
three yards in a cloud of dust, and just the
tougher team prevails. I I mean, it's hard to bet
against the It's hard to bet against the trend, is
how I'll put it. Yeah, right, we we do a
(19:30):
segment on the show, on our Pick Sweash show, the
trend is your friend. I think in this in this scenario,
it has been your friend. But the price matters. And
I always use this example when I'm talking about when
you bet something and then how the number matters more
than the bet itself. Let's use this, Let's use the
(19:51):
Let's use Apple stock as an example, or I guess
Amazon stock, any any you know blue chip stock when
you buy matters. If you bought Amazon Stock when it
was a dollar, it's your it's your favorite stock, you
love it, you are it's like you literally your your
your pride and joy. If you bought it when it
was at three thousand dollars, you feel a little differently
(20:13):
about about Amazon stock today, right, Um, that's kind of
where we're at with this game. Like if if you
bought those totals, and I'm looking at the sheet now
of all the totals that have been in this game,
I'm seeing a lot of forties and thirty nine and
thirty eight and forty ones. And you know, if you
bought the under back then then you feel pretty good
(20:34):
about your bet now at thirty two and a half.
If someone sneezes the wrong way, like if someone falls
off the bench, something flukey happens, ball gets tipped up
in the air, bounces this way, bounces that way, and
then all of a sudden, it's back in the end
zone on the other end, you know, and on a
defensive our special team score like you, you're probably gonna
lose this bet. It literally will take one or two
(20:57):
flukey bounces for you to lose an under thirty two
and a half. So keep that in mind before you,
you know, open up a new mortgage account for this bet.
Because it's hitting sixteen straight times. That's that's where I
I caution people. Now the X and os in this game,
like they're all it's always the same handicap every year.
(21:18):
It's just personnel changes in this particular game. Navy has
actually played a really tough schedule this year, um and
they've had a couple of tough games, like they're they're
combined winning percentage of the teams that they faced this
year seventy one and fifty. So they've played some tough
teams this year. Army not not so much. And I
(21:39):
think Navy's quarterback situation is unfortunate. Ty Lobati, the great
uh you know quarterback who has had such a great year,
won't play his hurt so to be Xavier our line
playing in this game. And the irony with that is
he was hurt in this game a couple of years
ago and that was when lobot I took over, and
so this game will be an extra for him. It's
kind of like a full circle moment after being hurt
(22:00):
in this game back uh In was actually the first
play of the game, So some interesting, you know, full
circle moments for him. And this is gonna you know,
if you like rushing, if you if you if you
watch that Sacramento State game last night, and you're hoping
for similar vibes this morning. Today you're in the You're
sniffing up the wrong tree. This game is gonna be
(22:23):
I don't know how many passes will be thrown or completed.
Maybe I can count them on one hand. Um, Navy
has won two games this year where they haven't completed
a pass. So I'll just leave it at that and
we'll move forward with the handicap. And that's why the
total is as low as it is. No. You mentioned
a while back opening a Mortga mortgage account. Um, I
(22:44):
would open a mortgage account and bet that Isaac Lowan
Kron it's gonna crush it. In this update, you know
it's a sure fire. The odds are pretty high every time. Yes,
here it is. I low with the latest. What's going on, buddy,
Not to you guys. See, I made made no mistakes
in that entire update that I will collect. Fellas a
busy night in the NBA On Friday night, the Philadelphia
(23:08):
seventy sixers and one a wild one in overtime over
the Los Angeles Lakers, one thirty three to one twenty two.
So the Lakers rally from nine down with twenty nine
seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime, But
then in the overtime, the Sixers outscore the Lakers thirteen
to two. Joel Embiid finished with thirty eight points. The
Bennesota Timberwolves what did utah? What? Eighteen to one oh E?
(23:29):
T Angelo Russell scored thirty twenty of them in the
fourth quarter. Rudy Gobert against his former team twenty two
points and thirteen rebounds. The Milwaukee Bucks victorious the Dallas
what oh six to one oh five? Brook Lopez in
the game winning layup with seven point one to play.
But get this, Dallas went ten out of twenty four
(23:49):
from the free throw line, their worst free throw performance
in franchise history. Zion Williams thirty five points, including an
incredible three sixty spinorama dunk for the x gloom Asian
point of the New Orleans Pelicans to one seventeen win
of the Phoenix Suns. New Orleans now seventeen and eight.
The Memphis Grizzlies made it a five game winning streak
(24:09):
with a one fourteen to what oh three win over
the Detroit Pistons, one of America's foremost soccer journalists. Grant
Wall has died while covering the World Cup in Cutar.
Wall collapsed while covering Friday's quarterfinal match between Argentina and
the Netherlands. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
While previously spent twenty five years at Sports Illustrated. Among
(24:31):
the things he did there, he wrote the first national
feature story on a then high school junior named Lebron James.
Last night, after the game at Philadelphia, James called Walls
passing a tragic loss. It's unfortunate to lose someone as
great as he was. May he rest in paradise. Grant
(24:52):
Wall was forty eight years old. The quarterfinals today kick
off one hour from now at the World Cup. Morocco
take Portugal, and then coming up at two pm Eastern,
it'll be England against France. Fellas back to you, guys,
Please remind me not to bet soccer. I have been.
I'm about to make another wager on it. Yeah, how
(25:13):
are you? I don't know. I I like the under.
I like the under until I saw Morocco's lineup and
then two of their like key defenders are out and
now I'm just thinking portraits of Portugal sitting Christiano Ronaldo
again talk about saying farewell to a legend. Um, he's
(25:34):
getting the Baker Mayfield treatment, right, But I wouldn't put
Baker in the same category as Christiano Ronaldo in terms
of their meaning to the sport. But um, you know
it's it's recency bias. But yeah, I'm feeling a little
less bullish on my underbent now that those two. I mean,
it's all it's all defending for Morocco. Like it's like
a It's like a brick wall and a couple of
(25:54):
the big important bricks are out so well portunly get bullish.
I feel the same way. I feel like I've missed
on all these bets, you know, and it's just little
nibbles because I don't know what I'm doing here. But yeah,
I started second self control that you do. I started.
(26:16):
I've actually hit five straight since last weekend. Though I've
had a good week. I've had a good week of
soccer betting, but I have a bad feeling about this
one after seeing the lineup. Let's turn our attention though,
to Deon Sanders, who is at Colorado and man, this
has been quite the talking point throughout the entire week,
so Dion was introduced at a Colorado basketball game during
(26:39):
the week, and of course they went berserk. They went crazy.
They love this guy, gives them some juice. They've had
zero juice and Boulder for the last two decades. So
Dion Sanders going. They're representing hope and optimism. I get
why they're so excited about this. But the negative side
of this story is there a lot of people calling
(27:01):
Dion out for leaving Jackson State. He went to an HBCU,
he was there for three years, he had a ton
of success, he was twenty seven and five, and they're saying,
you sold out, you left an HBCU for greener pastures
in Colorado. This is obnoxious to me. This is how
it works in coaching, and so for Dion to get
(27:22):
a Power five offer and to take it, that is
not selling out. That's what coaching does. That's what they do.
They move on to bigger gibbs gigs most of the time,
and I think it's a disservice. If I'm a high
profile coach and I'm thinking about going to an HBCU,
I have to seriously think about what's gonna be the
fallout if I leave. In a few years, they're gonna
(27:45):
call me a sellout, Like who needs that headache? So
I think it's unfortunate, and I don't think that the
negativity does apply to dn Someone saying, oh, he said
God called him to Jackson State, Well what, God can't
call you to Colorado after that? Like, come on, you
gotta stay? What's the free requisite? You gotta stay a decade?
He's just obnoxious to me. He found a better gig
and he took it, big deal. Yeah, I agree with you.
(28:08):
I think that I support Dion sanders decision to jump
ship on Jackson State and go to Colorado just as
much as I would any Jackson State player entering the
transfer portal if they didn't feel like they were getting
a fair shake with coach Prime. Right. I mean, we're
living in a world where if you don't feel like
(28:28):
your talents are being appropriately highlighted in a program or
with a franchise, you can go ahead and exert your
will and fight your way out of that situation. It's
not even that hard of a fight in college football anymore.
All you have to do, if you're a coach or
a player is find a team. In the terms of
a coach who's willing to pay the exit clause on
(28:50):
your way out of one program to come to the next,
like Lincoln Riley did with the Sooners going to the Trojans,
like Deon Sanders will with Jackson Stayed heading off to
Colorade Otto Transferportal. It's even easier. You just tweet something
out on social media and if you're a highly enough
prized player in your conference, uh in the nation, you're
(29:11):
gonna find a greener pasture elsewhere potentially. So yeah, I
mean this this to me, it's a it's a weird reaction,
but you know what, it happens to the people who
are most valuable. And Dion Sanders has proven his value
at Jackson State and so Colorado should be screaming their
heads off at a basketball game he attends, because if
(29:33):
you had that much value for Jackson State, I can't
wait to see what he does at a Pack twelve program. Yeah. Um,
First of all, Colorado was my biggest win of the
year in win total world, the under three and a half.
That was a gift from the gambling gods. There was
no stones throw right. If you want to use a
(29:54):
boulder joke of rock joke, there's no chance that they
were reaching four win this year. Um, so thank you
for that, Colorado. That was my most memorable Colorado moment
of the season, and now this is the number two
most memorable Colorado moment of the season because we get
to dissect what I think is I don't want to
call it like a transformational change of college football, but
(30:17):
I do think getting Dion Sanders into this world, he
was kind of on the outskirts of it, right, Like
I know that Jackson State's got a lot of tradition
and history, but in terms of the college football landscape,
they're not really in that in that mix in the
Power five conference, competing for national championships, etcetera, etcetera. So
now we get to see him in the real spotlight,
(30:38):
like the actual PAC twelve faceing U, s U C
l A for another year and then you know, we'll
see what the PAC twelve becomes, um after those teams depart,
and we'll see if Prime can get Colorado back on
the map. Back in the eighties and the nineties when
Eric Bienimy was running all over the field and all
that stuff. Right, So you know that there were some
really good Colorado team from my you know growing up
(31:02):
that I'm fascinated to see if he could bring it
back to that, to that, to that status. The behind
the scenes of him um talking to the players was
very unique. I would say that's some of the most
unique riveting theater I've seen all year in college football.
Him laying it on the line. I mean, there were
(31:22):
no punches thrown during that. During that speech, he basically said,
you better be ready because we're bringing in the top tier.
We're bringing in the filet mignon, the creme de la creme,
and you're gonna have to compete with that. And guess what,
a lot of you guys pack your bags because it
ain't gonna work. I mean, he laid it all out
there for him and you know, sometimes we we we
(31:44):
we live in a society. I know my my sister
does this with our kids, and I don't want me
to call her out, but you know, we live in
a bit of a sheltered society with our children. So
I approve and I applaud of Prime laying you know,
being real with him. It's cruel world, guys, someone better
is going to try to come and take your job.
You either compete with him or you pack your bags
and you leave. Yeah, that's really it he was. He
(32:05):
was very blunt and at first, at first I didn't
like it, and there's a portion I still don't like
because it was about him. It was about his record.
That's always about but it was you know what it was.
It was a very professional sport, professional approach to college,
and you're not used to that. He was just like,
(32:26):
we can find better players than you. So if you
want to leave, great, there's someone better that's coming in
to take your spot. It's really what he was. He
was just telling them that is like, these guys are
getting paid, the stakes are higher, the money is bigger,
the pie is bigger. Treat them like pros. I don't
(32:47):
have a problem without. Yeah, college is supposed to be
a place where all of us, regardless of whether you
play a sport or not, learn about the rigors of
the world. And you're doing it with smaller steaks, you know,
I mean to a certain degree. You know, you're not
risking a paycheck that is going to uh, you know, uh,
(33:09):
potentially not provide food for your family. You're risking playing
time right there. So, So what Dion Sanders is doing
is giving these guys and early and a rude indoctrination
to what the real world feels like. Sometimes Christmas comes
and people get laid off and that sucks, But that
is the ruthless aspect of the corporate world that is
often not taught to college students. And guess what all
(33:32):
of these players in Colorado, I mean all of them,
either the ones who survived this first wave of quote
unquote cuts where they're asked to go find a different
team in the transfer portal, or they are or there
they themselves feel like they're they're not going to make
their way onto this roster and enter willingly, or you
know the other side of it, who end up competing
(33:54):
and maybe fighting their way onto the roster, fighting their
way first starting job. Both sides learn a hard lesson
it that life's tough sometimes and you're either going to
swim against the tide like the salmon upstream and you're
gonna avoid all the bears and the pitfalls and you're
gonna be able to get to your nesting site or
guess what, you're gonna get eight sometimes and that stinks.
But Dion Sanders is a coach, and coaches job is
(34:17):
to find out who's the best, who can hang and
who can't? And and in an introductory meeting as as
brutal as that was, and and maybe a little bit
self congratulatory to your point, Bryan, Yes, yes, And that
was a little nauseating in the cameras following Dion around
as he was, you know, kind of pacing in front
of the room. It was all a little okay, there's
(34:39):
a lot of theater here, but the point was a
big lesson learned by the entire room. And I think
it's it's it's something that it's he's not lying to them,
it's something he's gonna follow to the word. He's bringing
his son. He's gonna be the quarterback. A lot of
them are gonna be gone come the start of the season.
That is exactly what it's gonna look like. And any
(35:00):
do you have any problems with it? You know, speak now,
You're probably gonna have to hit the portal, but speak now. Yeah,
that's really what it was. It was blunt and uh, look,
the only thing is there's gotta be us involved in
a team sport. It's gotta be us instead of me
and my record and things like. You know what I'm
saying like, it's gotta be more of that body. What
(35:20):
he's saying is, hey, we gotta upgrade the talent. The
one and eleven record was a direct reflection of the
lack of talent here. So he's at least being completely
transparent and saying we are getting better players here. I
would rather, and I think you guys probably the same way.
I'd rather you be direct with me with bad news
(35:42):
instead of sort of go behind my back or not.
You know what I mean, Like, I just give it
to me straight, even if it's bad news, Just tell
me straight up. And that's basically what Dion did right there.
We'll have more about this a little bit later in
the show. We got a lot to do. We got
rich orin Berger, Penn State, All American, It's got Jared
Smith and picks wise dot Com. I'm Brian No. Coming
up next, it's got a grape. I have a grape
(36:07):
and I need to vent about it. I'm gonna be
a little bit like whiney Luca don Chech last night.
You know, Whiney Luca is my favorite Luca. I'm gonna
be a little whiny here coming up, and then we'll
get to a little bit of a breakdown of the
most important games that is on the way. It is

As I glanced down and I know it's very UnCollege football.
(37:59):
Of it's a big party, right, We're painting our faces,
We're singing the fight song. Right, We've got the pom
poms going. I'm gonna gripe. I'm gonna complain. I hate,
as much as I love college football, I hate that
the playoff games are on New Year's Eve. I'm sorry, Jared,
I know you're gonna roll your eyes. I don't care.
I freaking hate it. Why are we doing this again
(38:20):
where we get a game at what like eight pm?
It's an East coast problem, is what that is? Fine?
There are a lot of people in the East Coast,
Okay that want to see these colors playoff games. And yeah,
and if you're in a relationship and it's a big
going out night and your girlfriend significant other ones to
go out. Your counter argument can't be like maybe I
(38:42):
thought we'd stay in and watch ball, you know, like
you're just gonna miss some of the game. That's the
way it is. Yeah, sweetheart, George has got a three
headed monster and run right. That's better than watching the
ball drop at the hard rock, right, honey. Yeah, look
at these type ends they're going to be in the
n F. I was gonna say, if you're talking about
(39:04):
with a significant other, the tight end argument might not
be the way you might want to take it away
from that, right, She might be thinking you mean something else. Yeah, yeah,
but that's what we get there, you go, we get
this year. My my only, my only gripe about the
playoff is all the ones that we already discussed. But
I mean, I'm hoping, I'm hoping for magic man. I'm
(39:27):
I'm hoping that we see something in uh in this
college football Playoff that we haven't seen before. And so
I'm I'm I'm hoping for I'm hoping for Ohio State
to ruin the party. Like everybody's talking about Georgia like
they're the team that can't be beaten. I hope they
get beat Now, listen, this is nothing against Georgia, it
(39:50):
really isn't. I. I I mean, they've got a lot of
fine players. I hope they all go on to have
fantastic NFL careers or sell insurance whatever they're gonna do
with the rest of their life from this point moving forward.
And then those who are waiting in the wings to
replace those that move on. I hope they have success
at the collegiate level. But what I'm hoping for is
a rematch of the game, Like I want to see
(40:11):
Ohio State Michigan final this season. I think that would
be a great send off to this really dumb four
game setup that we've had, and then enter into this
new world of twelve game expansion. Stetson Bennett does sound
like an insurance come by life insurance from the firm
(40:33):
of Bennett and Stetson. He sounds like a cologne to me.
Is like, well, he's I mean, he's gonna be on
the Heisman podium tonight, so who are we to talk
hooeye about him? But um, yeah, those games should be fun.
Oh They're gonna be a lot of fun. We'll get
to them as we go on. Here, coming up next.
This has completely changed the game, but is it a
(40:53):
good change? Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

(41:37):
that's is the subject we shall be discussing over here,
and it has absolutely changed the game in college football.
The question is is it a good change? So first
the facts. Monday, it shattered the all time daily record
for entries. Seven hundred eighty total players entered the portal
from FBS, FCS and the Vision two. And so the
(42:02):
question is is all this movement good for college football?
The way I would answer it different. Isn't automatically bad
Because this is different. A lot of people are just like, WHOA,
what's going on here? It's the wild West. We're not
used to this. Look, man, if there's a kid who
has a better offer somewhere else, he's not getting playing
(42:23):
time at all where he is, and he has the
freedom to go pursue that opportunity. I don't view that
as automatically bad. Now, there are some instances where it'd
be better to stick it out and stay where you are. Okay, fine,
there might be some bet But to say the overall
thing is bad, I just don't buy that. I think
(42:43):
that the transfer portal is a little bit of a
red herring in the debate over what's ruining college football.
Like this idea that somehow giving players flexibility and or
the ability to move from school to school without being
peno lies like coaches have been able to for years
and years and years, all of a sudden changes the
(43:04):
fabric of this game that we all have come to
love so much. It's the money. Look, if you want
to change any system for the better, take the money
out of it. You want to make politics better, take
the money out of it. You want to make news
media better, take the money out of it. You want
to make college football better, take the money out of
You can't. You can't. That Pandora box has been opened,
(43:26):
and now what players being paid. It just looks different now.
So there is no going back we are going to
see as a result of the transfer portal. It's it's
not you can't put a lid on this. If you
try to fight to put a lid on it, the
players will fight back. We already saw it pre COVID
or during COVID, when coalitions of players were forming to
(43:48):
fight for their rights. From a health standpoint. Okay, that's
from a health standpoint. We know football is already inherently
a dangerous game, and players willing to fight for their health.
How about money. People will fight harder than anything else
for money. So if you try to limit a player's
access to potentially gaining more in n I L. Or
gaining more in playing time, or potentially becoming a pro
(44:10):
because he moved from one program where he was a
second string quarterback to a program where he could be
a starter, these players will unite. You'll end up having
a player's union on your hand. You end up having
players strikes on your hand, and that's what everybody's nervous about.
So look the transfer portals here, and if you don't
like it, I'm sorry. It's not going anywhere. Yeah, one
(44:31):
out of every ten kids basically are in the portal.
Um it's here. Here's here's the only And this is
old man yelling at clouds. Jared right here. It's making
handicapping the Bowl games a real pain. Everybody slides to
the pie and Jared's like, let me tell you what
(44:53):
the headache this is for me? Over here? It is awful.
It is awful, and you know the real and listen,
it's it's very unique, right, I've been handicapping Bowl games.
I remember when I was sixteen years old and I
would be in the bull pick them pool and I
would make my little Nerds spreadsheet and I had handicapped
(45:14):
the games as rudimentary as I was as a teenage.
I don't even know what I was thinking back then
when I was handicapping the games, but you know, I
had my little Bowl spreadsheet and it was really easy, right.
It was just who he thought was gonna win the game.
And that process has evolved significantly since. And here we
are today doing it on a national radio show, so
on and so forth. But you know, over the last
couple of years that I've been doing this professionally, you know,
(45:35):
in the media space, it's been relatively easy to handicap
the ball games. I think it's a pretty easy handicap
compared to the regular season. It's much more situational, it's
more motivational, you know, than it is analytical. But now
there is this added wrinkle and it's making this process
a little more difficult in terms of the trans report
(45:57):
as a whole. Yeah, this is what we want, right
this is this is the evolution of the sport transpiring
before our very eyes. Maybe it's not the finished product.
Maybe there are some things that will be tweaked along
the way, some little rules that might prevent this mass exodus,
which is what we saw this year. It seems like
(46:18):
this year was the most intense transfer portal we've had,
and I think n I L is certainly contributing to that.
And again we're still in the very early stages of
these new rules. It's kind of like the Wild West.
My guess is, over time it gets regulated a bit
and it's not as pronounced as it was this year,
but this year in particular, it has been a very
(46:40):
tough handicap, not only from a big picture perspective but
also micro perspective, trying to wrap my head around what's
going to transpire over the next two weeks, which is,
you know, it is madness in a sense, it's like
mini March madness. Over the next two weeks, we get
about a week and a half of just games every
day and you know who's in, who's out, who wants
(47:02):
to be there, and then we'll di sect it a
little bit further in the off season, once we really,
you know, figure out where in the dust settles. But
it's been wild, guys, it really has. I mean, I
have a screen. Let's just leave it at this. I
now have dedicated a tab on my you know sheet
that I used to handicap games and my Google uh
you know, Chrome tab just to the trans reportal. I
(47:25):
have a website up that tracks every player. It's a
fantastic website. Um. And every time I go before I
make a bet on a game, I'm looking at that
team's transferportal site and I'm gonna see who's who's in
and who's out. And that's how important. It's become to
me with this handicapping process, well, with the portal. The
thing that's interesting is if you compare the portal to
(47:48):
NFL free agency, because that's what we have in college football,
we have free agency. Does anybody hate just hate free
agency in the NFL? Look at Odell Beckham Jr. That
the wide receiver. He's a free agent right now. We
don't know he's gonna go to Dallas or the Giants
or wherever he ends up. Is everybody just like, oh
my gosh, free agency. I can't stand it. No, no
(48:10):
one says that in the NFL. But because this is different,
because it's newer in college football where you don't have
to sit out a year and there's a lot more movement,
there are a lot of people that don't like it.
I'll ask any of those people, this was college football
worse off with Caleb Williams, Who's gonna win the Heisman
at USC this past year? Would you have preferred to
(48:31):
not see that? How about Bo Nicks at Oregon or
Spencer Rattler being a giant killer at South Carolina? What
if he was still holding the clipboard at Oklahoma? Is
that better for college football? I don't look at it
like that as at all. And when we get these
coaches that can move and they don't have to sit
out a year, and you just shrug your shoulders, like, yeah,
(48:51):
that's the way it is. Why wouldn't you shrug your
shoulders with a transfer portal and say that's the way
it is and look at it. Less of this is different.
I don't like it, and more what you gain from it.
I know there's more to keep up with, But when
you're seeing some of these guys, look at Justin Fields.
Remember he transferred from Georgia to Ohio State. He's in
(49:12):
the College Football Playoff against Trevor Lawrence is great theater.
I don't know why you would be so against things
that are good for entertainment value. Yeah. Joe Burrow another
example of that, going from Ohio State to l s
U and then becoming like Joe Cool after the National
championship walk off with the cigar smoke and all. Yeah.
(49:32):
I agree with you fully the transfer portal. It makes
way for storylines like we see in the NFL that
are so compelling, that are so great, like Gino Smith.
Gino Smith, uh lifelong journeyman in the NFL finally finds
the right fit in Seattle, and it just sings. I
(49:53):
don't know why. Gino's talented. That's part of the hy
uh Seattle. I mean, they've got smart guys on that
offensive coaching staff. There's no question that's part of the why.
They got a lot of good players around that offense
that a lot of people aren't talking about as much
as they are about the skill position players other places. Uh,
that's part of the why. But fit sometimes it just
(50:14):
fits better elsewhere, and we're not sure why that that
there's an intangible something that occurs. Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield,
I think he was kind of dogged and ran out
of town in Cleveland a little bit for some of
the things that went down and transpired. But this is
a first overall pick who has a head coach who
gets fired, has a couple of interims, and then a
(50:36):
new head coach and it just doesn't fit. He goes
to Carolina, that was an absolute disaster. Fired head coach.
He moves on to l a and on forty eight
hours notice, learning a new language, a new playbook, uh,
and with limited time with all of the players that
he was connecting with. On Thursday Night football against the
Raiders has a four minute flurry that is going to
(50:58):
etch his name in a ball history because it was
one of the greatest fourth quarter comebacks we've seen in
the regular season ever. You know. So, sometimes fit is
the whole conversation when it comes to players in football,
whether we're talking collegiately or professionally. And I'm in favor
of anything that helps players find a better fit. If
their first selection out of high school when they're eighteen
(51:20):
or seventeen years old wasn't a good choice, how many
eighteen or seventeen year old to make great choices in
the first place, let alone the school that you have
to play at for four or five years. So I'm
in complete support of the transfer portal. I think it's
gonna make the game better, a lot better. Yeah, I
didn't make them any great decisions at age seventeen. The
(51:41):
best one I made was going to Penn State. I think, Um,
it's funny, Rich if you had this available to you,
I'm not saying you would have transferred, but would the
thought ever have crossed your mind like it did after
a bad week? Like you had a really bad week.
Joe pot was up your butt about something. I want
to get out of here. I'm gonna go. I'm respected
(52:02):
somewhere else, right, Listen. I was. And it wasn't my
parents fault. They're great people, and uh and Patty and
Rich they did a wonderful job with me. I was
just criminally under prepared for college going out on my own.
I mean like from a school standpoint, from from a
from a maturity standpoint, and then also early on from
(52:23):
an injury standpoint. So my first training camp, I sprained
both of my ankles where they put me in these
plastic boots inside of my cleads, and I was going
against guys who were going to be drafted in the
first round. I was. I was brought in originally as
a defensive end. I I didn't switch the offense to
play oline for a little bit. And I was getting
my head kicked in during that training camp. And then
(52:44):
come the fall, I'm buried on the depth chart, and
I'm not doing great in school, and I'm getting in
trouble and all these things. And I got Joe pap
He's breathing down my neck, and I say to my
dad at one point and like, I think I want
out you know, I think I think I want to
go maybe to West Virginia. You know, I don't think yeah,
because they were yeah, dude, like they were. They were
(53:06):
on the list. It was like one and two down
the stretch there, and uh, I said, do you think
I should call up that coach I was talking. He's like,
my dad is Actually he was the one who goes Listen.
I don't know what the rules are. I could help
you figure it out, but maybe you should just take
a pause, right, take a deep breath, give it a month,
(53:27):
and then maybe give it another month. But but just
just wait it out and see because you can always
make that decision. You're in. You're there for the next
four years, so you have time. You have time to
make this decision. And I don't know if I necessarily
would have taken the same pause. I'd like to think
I would have. If transferring was as easy back then
(53:47):
as it is now, I think I would have. But
that's that's the part of the story that people don't
talk about, is the guidance that they'll receive from their
parents or their high school coaches and making a big
decision to switch schools. Yeah, I know, that's great stuff. Um,
look I like this. Also, two things real fast. Drake May,
(54:08):
the North Carolina quarterback, he tweeted out could never leave
this place. I'm a tar heel and then the seldomly
used handshake emoji very nicely. Right, and his brother was
a star on the National Championship Targets basketball team. I mean,
(54:30):
he's a legacy. I wouldn't expect him, but kudos Samos
who says that's where I was going. Yeah, I would
saying he tweets us and I could hear the hostility
in Iowa Sam's voice. You know, J T. Daniels is
transferring to his fourth program all caps right, Okay, fine,
(54:51):
there are some weird things, but you know what those
are the outliers. I would not get worked up over
the outliers. I would look at the whole ball of
wa acs instead of something that's peculiar, which it is
with j. D. Daniels being like, there are some people
that are career college people. He's a career transfer person,
but that's the outlier. That's not what's common with the
(55:12):
transfer portal. Yeah, and and by the way, not for nothing,
but to bring it all the way back to what
I started with Gino Smith played for the Jets, for
the Giants, for the Chargers. He's with the Seahawks now,
and it seems like a great fit, doesn't it? Like
Gino Smith is a great guy. I don't know J. T.
Daniels personally. He may be a great kid who just
hasn't felt comfortable in a situation, or maybe a coaching
(55:36):
staff hasn't seen the value in him and and he
can finally land at the Maybe the fourth school is
the right school because it took Gino Smith four teams
for him to finally find a system that matched his talents.
He's completing over seventy of his passes, and he's got
twenty two touchdowns and he's got six intercept Maybe we're
gonna be talking about, Oh my goodness, J T. Daniels
(55:58):
finally struck gold ad program X. Maybe it's Colorado. Who
knows listen, it's it's a sports thing, guys. And it
bleeds into our business too. You know how many television
stations and radio stations and schools I've worked at in
my career. I mean I I stopped updating my resume
a few years ago because it just it was like
too much. And this is also kind of my third
(56:21):
career path. I started out in broadcasting television, local news.
Then I went to finance because I wasn't making enough
money doing television and local news for obvious reasons. And
then in this whole gambling thing you know, dropped into
my lap. In fact, that story that I just glossed over.
When I told it to Don Martin, our our boss,
(56:42):
he was so wow, you have so much life experience,
and you've had all these you know, career stops and
all of these things that you've learned along the way,
you said. You know, he was so impressed by it
that it was it was a very easy transition into
this gig here, because he thought it would all all
of that life experience would bleed over. I'm not trying
to make the about me and be like coach Prime here,
but the point is sometimes you need sometimes bringing with
(57:06):
yeah right like where I got a camera crew right here,
film and this whole thing. Um. Sometimes you need that
life experience. You need those failures, those obstacles at your
previous locations to teach you the tools to succeed at
your next spot. That's the exact situation that happened with Gino.
(57:27):
I was covering Gino when he punched out. I k
and I was there the next day in the locker room.
He was, yeah, right, yeah, whatever incident it was. I
forget exactly how it was the punch. He was the
punch instead of the puncher, regardless that moment to find
his career at that time, and then he learned from
(57:47):
it and he grew from it, and then he If
you thought that was controversial, how about a few years
later when he ended Eli Manning's start streak. I think
it was Ben Macket. I forget it was the who
was the head coach? It was? You know how much
hate Gino got for just being the guy that ended
Eli manning streak, Like it wasn't his decision, but again
(58:11):
the butt of the New York media came down on
him again. And then you know, leaving town and going
to the Charges and now finally getting that opportunity with
Seattle learning under Russell Wilson for several years and then
getting his chance, and now you're seeing the fruits of
what has been an entire decade for him of learning
(58:33):
and you know, struggling sometimes you need those tough times.
Every journey is different. I always try not to compare
myself to other people in our career because their journeys
are different, right, And it's just it's a it's a tough.
Sports is tough. It teaches you a lot about humility
and the cruel nature of, you know, losing your job
(58:55):
for reasons that maybe aren't your fault. It's tough. And
these kids, you know, now, they're getting an earlier education
in the real world, and I ain't going anywhere, so
they might as well adapt to it, right, Okay, so
we have so much more to get to. We have
got Rich Ornberger, the Penn State All American. We've got
Jared Smith, three bidding analysts from Pick's Wife dot com
(59:16):
with all of his life experience and career changes. I'm
never gonna live this one down. Then Brian No coming
up next. Got a lot of non college football bowl games.
Which one are you most interested in? Some tasty matchups
will all weigh in on that. It's Fox Sports Radio's
Countdown to Kickoff presented by bet MGM. Welcome to the
(59:39):
biggest tailgate party in the nation. You're locked into Fox
Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff Touchdown and it's presented by
bet MGM. The King of Sports Books once again. Here's
Brian no, Rich Ornberger and Jared Smith. It is Fox
Sports Radio's Countdown to kick Off, presented by bet MGM. Okay, Fellas, So,
(01:00:04):
the uh non college football playoff games that you're most
interested in. I'll tell you what now, this is obvious.
I love Notre Dame football. It's the city I was
born and raised in um and take it on South Carolina.
I like that matchup in the Gator Bowl. But from
a gambling perspective, I just don't understand. I Notre Dames
(01:00:25):
favored by two and a half, and I'm like, Okay,
so Michael Mayer is going pro. He's not gonna play.
The stud tight end, Isaiah Fosky, the defensive end, he's
not playing. He's turning pro. The quarterback Drew Pine is transferring.
I'm like, and they're still favorite. Like, I don't get it.
I maybe South Carolina has a bunch of dudes sitting
(01:00:47):
out as well, most likely, But you said it, Jared.
From a handicapping perspective, some of these bowl games are
at nightmare. I'm looking forward to the game just because
it's so peculiar, But from a gambling perspective. I'm sort
of hearing my hair out here. M hmm. Yeah, there's
been some movement in this game too. Opened it two
Notre Dame favor, then it got away up to three
(01:01:09):
and a half, and at that point it looked like
the South Carolina money stepped in. And this is all
in the last you know, three or four days, basically, um,
I I these games are so tough, guys, honestly, they
really are. And I I tend to rely on the
market more than my own handicapping in these situations, because
(01:01:30):
the market tends to sniff out these spots a lot sooner.
And there's a lot of sharp people that are much
smarter than me, that bet much more than me, that
you know, move this market, um very quickly and abruptly,
um throughout the course of the next few weeks, and
I'll be scanning the board every night to see we
(01:01:51):
got a live runner. Like if one game just magically
moves two or three points overnight, you know, that game
all of a sudden pops up on my radar. This
game hasn't moved a ton, but you know, once we
got to that three and a half, market did look
like the South Carolina money stepped in. Yeah. Um, let's see.
In terms of bowl games, I'm most excited for, Like,
like you said, you have ties back to Notre Dame.
(01:02:14):
Both Jared and I went to Penn State. I played
there and really excited to see the Nitney Lions take
on the Utes in the rose Ball. I think that's
a really even matchup. I mean it's eerily even if
you look at record, you look at UH yards output
and defensive quotients, and you look at the style of play.
(01:02:34):
Even um, I think they have the edge the Utes
do in terms of their quarterback play. I got to
call a game, um uh and watch the Utes from
the broadcast booth. And that's a talented kid, Cameron Rising.
And I'll say this about um Dalton Kincaid. I think
he's the best pass catching tight end in college football.
(01:02:55):
I really do. I have that much respect for him.
I think he's an incredible player. And so they they
definitely have their their strengths. Um. You know, Penn State
obviously does as well that defense, especially the secondary UH
singletary out of the backfield, but also the other two
games I'm interested is I'm I'm on the call for
the hid ball UH San Diego State taken on middle
(01:03:15):
tennesse Tennessee. That's gonna be Christmas Eve. And then four
days later I'm calling the Holiday Bowl. And so that's
gonna be a good one. Um yeah, I mean, by
the way, Notre Dame almost almost was in the Holiday Bowl. Yeah,
that would that. It came down to the way, you know,
the Ducks are waiting on whether it be u NC
(01:03:36):
or Notre Dame. And then the Gator Bowl one out
to get the fighting Irish. But yeah, those are those
are the three games I'm specifically interested in. And uh yeah,
I'll tell you what Bowl season. The one thing you
have to you always have to hold on too if
you're these broadcast networks or these fan bases, is alumni
(01:03:57):
bases are what really float the eatings. I mean, it
always comes back to people interested in seeing their team
win in a game, an extra game on the season.
And until that drives up, I don't think we're ever
going to see bowl season really dry up. Yeah, it's
a it's really interesting man, where it's uh, who's playing,
(01:04:18):
that's the first part of the equation. Who wants it?
Those are giant pieces of information right there where I
look at the Orange Bowl Clemson in Tennessee, and we
know Hendon Hooker has hurt, which sucks Man with the
torn a c l the Tennessee quarterback, but Clay Kate Klubnik,
who's taking over for d j Ui ungle Lay who's
(01:04:38):
hitting the transfer portal? So who's playing for Clemson. That's
the first thing and who wants it? And uh, that's
not the easiest thing to gauge before the game kicks off.
Maybe a weight in game with as much a variables
as there are with some of these non playoff games.
But it's gonna be an interesting season, man, there's no doubt.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to you
(01:05:00):
being on the call. Aloha rich Ordan Burger. So, so
you're what's their Hawaiian like, do you have a can
area already plan? I've never been in Hawaii. It's like
on the list. Yeah, we're we're leaving on the twenty
and we're gonna be there through Uh we're flying back
to the step Dull Continental or we're flying back to
(01:05:22):
United said the mainland on Christmas Day. Yeah, I never
know how to say that, like is really official? I
like the contiguous United States? Yeah, that's a big word
that works to big for me, the super big Island.
Yeah yeah, really really big, you know. And I'll say
this about if anybody who's interested in a bowl game
(01:05:44):
that's gonna highlight a player that nobody knows about, but
his story is amazing. Is that bowl game between the
Aztecs and Middle Tennessee because Jalen Maiden Uh if you
you're unfamiliar with his name, he moved from third string
safety to quarterback and became one of the most efficient
quarterbacks in college football. It was outstanding. I mean, he
(01:06:06):
saved the as text season. So San Diego State, you know, look,
they were kind of a middling team, figuring out what
their identity was going to be on the season. And
and this this Mississippi State transfer from a couple of
years ago who was a backup quarterback and then asked
his coaches this offseason, Hey, what's best for the team
staying in the quarterback room or transferring or transferring or
(01:06:28):
moving to the defense. They said, let's try out of defense.
And so he played safety. He helped on special teams.
He actually played about forties six snaps against Utah in
San Diego States against the Utes, and then three games
later against Hawaii, became the starting quarterback and saved their season.
(01:06:49):
So one one of those like under the radar stories
that I'm hoping gets a little bit more attention during
bowl season. And I actually really appreciate bowl season for
that reason because you know a lot of these stories.
There's so many teams in college football. How can you
really keep a handle on it, well for one day
or one game, or sometimes there's there's three games on
(01:07:10):
and one day you'll get a spotlight on you for
a little bit and people get to catch up on
some of these stories. It's pretty It's a fun time
in college football. I remember playing in bowl games, you know,
the Outback Bowl, the Alamo Bowl, the Rose Bowl, um
those expe the Orange Bowl back in two thousand five.
That game was so awesome. Yeah, triple over time. We
were up late to see that game. I intended in
(01:07:31):
my entire life. Yea, the about in Paternal Bowl. But
but it's an amazing experience for these kids and it's
fun for the fans to watch. Man I I'm I'm
excited for this year's bowl season. He speaking of staying
up late. Our main man, Sheamus McGhee was up late
watching Incarnate Word in Sacramento State. We'll hear from him
coming up. We've got Isaac Low and Broad first though,
(01:07:53):
with the latest. What's going on? Well, the latest is,
with all due respect Brian and Jared, you guys need
to to step up your game a little bit in
this sense. So last week, you guys are on site
at the Beautiful bow Ravage all together for that show.
What you guys need to do is to campaign for
a special Hawaii Bowl preview show. I don't know why
(01:08:16):
with you guys and Rich. You know, the first thing
I thought of, by stupid brain went when Rich said,
you know, for anyone who's interested, I thought I was
gonna say, I gotta plus one if you want to
roll to Hawaii. Why I thought that I've never been
to Hawaii. Yeah, you guys, you gotta try it sometimes
(01:08:37):
a little bit, but not this time. Smell you nice
fresh Prince opening credits analogy by the way, right, and
by the way, remember they don't use Aloha Stadium anymore.
So the Way Bowl, if I'm not mistaken, is actually
going to be on campus at the University of Hawaii again,
(01:08:58):
because yeah, they used to play you know, the Aloha
Bowl in the Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium. But they're
just not using Aloha Stadium anymore. Fellas. The quarterfinal round
continuing at the World Cup on this Saturday, Morocco and
Portugal are scoreless in the thirty seven minute. Again, superstar
Christiano Ronaldo not in the starting lineup for Portugal in
(01:09:20):
this match. Then coming up at two pm Eastern, it'll
be the fourth and final quarterfinal England against France. One
of America's foremost soccer journalists, Grant Wall, has died while
covering the World Cup in cuts Are. Wall collapsed while
covering Friday's quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He
was later pronounced dead at a hospital. While previously spent
(01:09:42):
twenty five years at Sports Illustrated. Among other things, there
he wrote the first national profile on a then high
school junior named Lebron James. Last night, James called it
quote a tragic loss. He was always pretty cool to
be around. May he rest in Paradise unquote. Grant Wall
was forty eight years old. In the NFL, the Dallas
(01:10:04):
Cowboys are activating receiver James Washington from injured reserve out
of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. Fellas back to you,
Thanks Hilo. It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff,
presented by bet MGM. Let's dive into this follow the money,
good money. Alright, we're following the Money with Jamus McGee,
(01:10:26):
our main man, team lead of sports trading at bet MGM.
I'll tell you what shame is. First off, props to
you for tweeting all three of us from this show. Yes,
previewing just kind of like tailgating for Sacramento State against
Incarnate Word. I would imagine you are a pig in
(01:10:47):
FCS slop last night. Oh boy, I mean, just two
legendary schools right there, as Calmino stage earlier pumping Nevada
on earlier this season. The Incarnate Word, of course, was
the first one we had this year, and they put
on a show last night. I mean, that game was spectacular.
It was the game of the year in college football.
(01:11:08):
Like I I honestly believe that. I hope we get
it topped at some point over the next you know,
three weeks, but it really was all right. The actual
games of the year the like I guess we'll start
with the culture will playoff because like to me that
the early line movement is fascinating here. If you really
feel that passionately about a game to bet it nearly
a month in advance, you really must have a strong conviction.
(01:11:34):
But I'm not surprised that we've seen some strong convictions already,
especially on TCU that seems to be the early sharp
or maybe just popular pick that line now down to
seven and a half after opening in the nine range. Yeah,
open nine and a half. I was interested to see
where that goes. I personally would have had that I
(01:11:54):
have that around like eight points. I thought we'd not
shocked the season sharp action coming in on t to you,
But yeah, it just kept coming in in the early
parts of the week. We're sitting at seven and a
half right now, and then the next match up Michigan
Ohio State. I mean, what do you feel about this
one in terms of line movement, in terms of where
(01:12:15):
you think the line's gonna end up? I I think
I've been a little surprised, uh that the sharp action
has actually dropped this down because it's I mean, we're
hanging seven from the open longer than I think most
books were hanging up just because we were the public
u money coming in on the opening line just kept
(01:12:35):
coming in on Georgia, but it took enough sharp action
to move us down to that six and a half number.
I think it's the way people have talked about the
two teams. I think that's gonna be a real public
side in Georgia. And you'll see some sharps on Ohio State.
You don't shamus when you look at the Bull season
as a whole. What do you think is the best
(01:12:56):
approach when you see what other sharp betters are doing,
what makes the most sense. How to approach some of
these non college football playoffs games where there are a
lot of kids sitting out. You have to wonder who's
going to show up and play? Who wants it? Like,
how do you start to to handicap all of those variables.
It's so hard to bet these games. I think if
(01:13:17):
you want to, if you really want to have an
edge betting this, you have to bet it as soon
as possible because a lot of these are just they're
beat off the information. I mean, Iowa Kentucky is just
up in front of me right now. Kentucky opened a favorite,
and now Iowa is a two point favorite Alabama. It's
like every year the Capain team sits North Carolina is
part of the worst defender in my opinion, every year
(01:13:38):
the line moves like four or five points against them
because like the entire offense is sitting out the next game. Um,
but it's it's really hard to bet this. It's like,
I don't really know what my piece of advice would
be other than just trying to get ahead of these
line moves so you can get the best number. Yeah,
and and that's tough, honestly, Shamus, because obviously most of
our audiences is a little more on the on the
(01:14:00):
creational side of this. And placing a wager again for
the national championship games, the college will playoff three weeks
before the game. It's it's it's hard, and I think
that's where some of the line movements kind of deceive us,
because these lines could move another pointer, Like we could
get a massive news bomb dropped into the market at
(01:14:22):
any point in time over the next month that tilts
these lines another point or two in either direction. So
it's gonna be fascinating sale plays out. I wanted direct
back to Alabama for a minute because I think that
one to me is front and center. First of all,
Alabama's Alabama, right, maybe the most public team on the planet,
But that line has moved significantly in favor of Kansas State.
(01:14:42):
And I hypothesized this a couple of weeks ago when
we we watched Alabama play Auburn probably going to be
Bryce Young's last game, right and Will Anderson, it kind
of looks like the line movements telling us that is
that something you would caution in that game? Has the
vale you've been completely extracted from Kansas State or when
(01:15:03):
the news that Bryce Young isn't going to play finally
does become public and certified knowledge. Right now, it's just
you know, speculated on based on the line move Do
you think that line moves more? I think it will.
I'm a little shocked he hasn't come out and said
whether he's playing yet or not. Um, but I would
(01:15:24):
say the value is completely gone to this because, yeah,
I think the line couldn't move more with Bryce Young
does say that he's gonna sit out the bowl game.
But right now, I mean Kansas State, a lot of
guys you're sitting out for Bama. It's how much motivation
do they have? They're not in the playoff. Um, that's
another angle I think you could use in bowl games
as some of these bigger teams that had their mind
(01:15:46):
their site setting the playoffs, how motivated are they going
to be in these ball games? Hey, Shamus, it's always
a treatment. Enjoy the FCS stuff. And maybe a little
army Navy today as well, buddy, Oh, of course, and
a hun in college basketball games on today. So we
got our we got our yea, we have our handsful
here at bet MGM. There you go, man, we'll catch
(01:16:06):
you later, Shamus, have a good day. But there he is,
Shamus McGee, team lead of sports Trading at bet MGM. Okay,
we've got rich Orn Burger, the man who's going to
Hawaii and not even inviting us. You know. I've got
Jared Smith, the man who's never been to Hawaii and
hasn't been invited by rich Orn Burger. How about that.
(01:16:27):
It's unbelievable. And Brian, no, I have been to Hawaii. Uh,
I forget where I think it was quiet, I don't remember.
But just just not just not with me this year. Yeah,
just not with you. Rich Stay away from rich Yeah,
if you see him in Hawaii, you don't know him. No, listen,
I'll make room in my luggage. You guys, if you
(01:16:49):
like peanut coladas, Yeah, coming up next. We certainly understand it.
It doesn't mean we have to like it. It's Fox

Kickoffs are coming, soue, and we're leading you up to that.
This is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented by

search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts. Okay,
(01:17:52):
with bull Season right around the corner, happens every year
and much more commonly now, got a lot of players
sitting out these games and look We certainly understand it,
especially if you stand to be a top pick, maybe
a first rounder. It's a lot of money. The horror
story was Jalen Smith with Notre Dame were in the
Fiesta Bowl. He hurt his knee. He was gonna be
(01:18:15):
a top five, top ten pick, a lot of nerve
damage wrecked his knee. Was a second round pick. That
was millions and millions of dollars. So I understand that.
But there's a flip side to it. Not everyone is
a first round prospect, and some of these guys they
can actually boost their draft process, their draft stock by
playing in these games. Think about Jackson Smith and Jigba
(01:18:38):
the Ohio statewide receiver who went freaking crazy in the
Rose Bowl last year. That absolutely improves his draft stock.
And I know, sound the harps and the emotional music
in the background, but believe it or not, you might
look fondly back on these times when you go to
a bowl game and that might be your last taste
of college football. So if you're a fourth round prospect,
(01:19:00):
and I know injuries occur and you're taking a risk,
but let's not make it sound like you're juggling knives
over here. You know what I mean, Like, I think
there's a flip side in a counter argument to not
sitting out some of these bowl games. Oh there is.
You could. You could absolutely advance your draft stock by
having a big Bowl against uh, against great competition. But
like you said, it's a double edged sword. You can
(01:19:23):
also get injured, and that, like we've seen many times,
can affect your draft stock. It's happened too often to
really just just sit here and parse out each name
that has had this occur. But I'll put it this way.
If a coach is allowed to do this with with
very little penalty outside of maybe some bad pr why
(01:19:43):
can't Why can't we just let a player make a
business decision the same way we kind of coach. I
don't understand why we act like this is like there's
a lot of pearl clutching around this. It's a business decision,
that's all it is. It's all a business decision. This
is now one of the biggest businesses in sports. So
I have no idea how it's going to transpire over
(01:20:05):
the next three weeks. My guess is we get a
lot more outs than ends. Just my guess, oh we will.
Oh yeah, I hear a lot of stories about how
this guy is really excited to play in the ball game.
Probably more on the other side. Send vogue over here.
You're playing, Yeah, exactly playing. What are we doing over
(01:20:27):
coming up next? What's the biggest thing to keep in
mind regarding the biggest games we got left on the docket.
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Search f s R to listen live. Oh, what is
(01:20:48):
going on everybody? Hope you're having a fantastic Saturday here.
We are normally are counting down to kickoff by the minute.
Not the case today. You know, we're a couple of
hours away from the Army Navy games, so a little
bit of a different schedule this week, but we are
preparing for the bowl season and the two biggest playoff games. Uh,
(01:21:10):
two biggest Bowl games are the playoff games. And as
far as that goes with the matchups over here TCU
in Michigan, we've got Ohio State against Georgia. I guess
the first part is we're talking to Shamus McGee from
bet MGM about line movement either of you guys have
a gut feeling of where the lines will end up. Like,
(01:21:32):
put it this way. I'm not asking for the exact number.
But let's take TCU in Michigan for instance, Michigan is
favored by seven and a half by game time the
couple of days leading up to game time. Do you
expect Michigan to be favored by more or less when
we get to that point. That's a great question. You
know what I did. We we were talking about this,
(01:21:55):
uh recently on my show, and I kind of just
had a touchdown, Like when when I I rationalize this
because you could make an argument for the favorite in
both of these teams, they should be favored by more,
right Georgia, especially the way Ohio State finished their season, uh,
and then also with Michigan over TCU. But then there's
(01:22:17):
arguments you can make on the other side of that.
So I settle on seven, Like Georgia should be favored
by seven by by kickoff and social Michigan. But we'll see.
But that's that's my gut. Now what may actually happen, Well,
who knows, maybe somebody breaks a finger in in practice,
you know, maybe somebody maybe there's injury news that's leaked,
(01:22:40):
or there's a personal issue that gets in the that
interferes with the semifinal, and those things obviously can have
a staggering effect on a game, especially if it's uh
a skill position player that's supremely important to an offense,
or a defender and edge guy, whatever it may be.
But outside of that, yeah, I'm kind of I'm kind
(01:23:01):
of stuck on that number. With both of these games,
you know, Georgia and Michigan favored by seven. Yeah, I
mean I think that I think that sounds fair, right,
I think, Um, I think when you talk about these
games holistically and big picture, it's hard to wrap your
head around Michigan being favored by or you know, by
more than a touchdown. But that's that's what the line is. Um.
(01:23:26):
It's it's a good point because I think when you
the line movement of these games is unique, right, Like,
there's so much time before the game that you you
get the numbers that dropped and then you see that
initial sharp money that hits the market. And this is
kind of what I've noticed in years pass with these
Bowl games, especially the later Bowl games, is you get
(01:23:48):
the initial line move that we see and clearly the
sharp's favor TCU. Obviously, the numbers and one of the
rating systems that I subscribed to that's been very accurate
this season, one of the most accurate it has. The
TCU game is about a four four and a half
point underdog to Michigan. So I'm not surprised that we
(01:24:08):
saw the initial move towards towards the horn Frogs. But
now that we've seen that initial move and the quote
unquote value has been sucked out of the market, I'm guessing,
and Brian, we talked about this on the podcast this week,
I'm guessing we don't see a lot of movement over
the next couple of weeks. We're kind of in the
nose the the no fly zone right now, unless we
(01:24:31):
get a major news bomb dropped into the market, you know,
some quarterback or some receiver, some running back, or something
that is injured or hurt or something that we didn't expect.
I would be willing to bet that we stay at
the current prices, which is Ohio State UM catching almost
a touchdown and and and TCU catching over a touchdown,
probably until week of maybe forty eight, seventy two hours
(01:24:56):
before then, the limits expand at the sports books, and
that's when you will start to see more significant, sharp
money dumped in. So I wouldn't be surprised if you
don't feel strongly about either side right now. In these
two college were while playoff games, I wouldn't rush your
bet because I think you're going to be able to
(01:25:17):
bet the games at the current prices for a significant
period of time up until let's call at forty eight
hours before to use a nice round number, so that
would be basically two and a half weeks. So if
you don't feel strongly about either side, don't feel the
fomo here because I don't think we're gonna see any
significant moves, especially now that both games are gravitating right
(01:25:38):
around a key number. It takes a lot to push
a game through seven, so I don't think we're gonna
see that move anytime soon. On game day day before,
that's when I think you'll see the next big move.
You guys might disagree with this, but I think Michigan
is so overrated, so overrated, Like, yeah, if you look
(01:25:59):
at the body of work, I mean, really, we're acting
like this team is just battle tested, and look at
the gauntlet that they went through. They crushed Ohio State.
That give him credit for that. And they crushed Penn State.
That's the resume. That's it. That they've played a bunch
of Illinois and Nebraska, Rutgers, Indiana clos your ears. Yeah,
(01:26:22):
but like, why are we and there're seven and a
half point favorites over played like seven ranked teams this year. Yeah,
if you look compared TCUs Road, it's comparable. Okay, in
terms of tough teams. Playing at Baylor, it's not easy,
playing at Texas in a night game. That's not easy.
Beating a ranked Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas Oklahoma. These
(01:26:46):
are games earlier in the year where those team seasons
hadn't fallen apart, right, Like, I just look at the
Horned Frogs. They're not the brand name. And I think
the line shows you that if you had the exact
act same seasons play out in the exact opposite order,
if you just slapped Michigan on t c US resume
(01:27:08):
what it is this year, and you slapped TCU on
Michigan's actual resume, I think the line would move. I
think it's a direct reflection of a lack of brand
recognition with TCU and Michigan without Blake Coreum. I mean, yeah,
they played Ohio State tough. It was a brain dead
game plan defensively, and that one from Jim Knowles, I
(01:27:29):
don't know what he was doing. But in Michigan they've
benefited from that. I think they are so right for
the picking in this one. Seven and a half is
a gift from the gambling gods. I don't believe in
Michigan at all. I'll tell you this one, Sam, save
this line recorded, hit the button that one. I'll say this.
(01:27:50):
I I think there's a lot of people feel the
same way you did because the line opened at what
nine and a half, and now it's coming down. It's
just it's one of those It's one of those matchups where, yeah,
brand recognition, Michigan the three final over Ohio State to
end the season. There were a lot of things. And also,
(01:28:12):
I mean they took care of business in the Big
Ten championship game. They beat Perdue handedly. So you look
at all of that and you say, yeah, this is
this is a team that deserves recognition. This is a
team that deserves the cloud that they've received. But does
the Rose by any other name smell as sweet, right,
it's almost Shakespearean if you did swap names. Would we
(01:28:36):
be looking at Michigan the same way? And you're one, right,
who do I think is the better team? I'd argue Michigan,
But in terms of the line, yeah, I'm with you,
it sort of feels like like stealing still and uh
and and and it comes down to this Quentin Johnston
and uh and and Max Duggan matchup. I don't know
(01:28:56):
how Michigan's going to stop that. I I I just don't.
I think it's going to. I think those are two
ax X factors that I I don't think Michigan really
is going to have an answer for defensively, So TCU,
who's gonna hang around? Um? I think I think Michigan
ultimately wins the game. But I love the line. If
(01:29:18):
you want to bet TCU, here's how Here's where I
usually start with these Bowl games. And my handicap gets
much deeper from here. But this is where I start,
and I'll be perfectly frank, I haven't deep dive any
of these games yet. Um, maybe I should have. We're
doing a show today, right, but but but just sure, Yeah,
I haven't gotten there yet. And maybe I just need
(01:29:41):
time to warm up to these teams. I've started to deep,
you know, slowly deep dive some of the earlier Bowl games,
but I have not gotten to this end of the
rainbow yet. But besides handicapping the market, which we've kind
of done already, right the early Morney was on TCU Georgia,
Ohio State has been kind of a you know, flat
since the open, but it relatively speaking, I think we're
(01:30:01):
going to see more money on Ohio State there because
they're the dog. But I the first place I start
is who has the best player on the field. That
is where I start. And I don't know the answer
to that question with this Michigan TCU game. Like I
think defensively, Michigan's got some guys that probably are gonna
be top three round draft picks. Right on TCU side,
(01:30:25):
I think they might have the best player on the field.
It might be Max Duggan, and it might be Quentin
Johnson right or and it might be card of the
running back. So yeah, I I can see why there
has been a lot of love for the horn Frogs,
and I can make the case that they maybe have
the best player on the field at any given moment
when their offenses on the field, and that scares me
(01:30:49):
to lay points with a team that it maybe doesn't
have the best overall, one guy that's going to be
the game breaker, because usually in these games, it's one thing,
it's one trend, it's one matchup that proves to be
the difference. And I think it might be Dug in
making plays against the Michigan defense that has looked at
(01:31:13):
times this year, especially when they've managed up in competition.
I mean, go watch the Maryland game, you know, go
watch some of the other games that Michigan has played
this year where they've given up some points. You know it,
I could make it even the Purdue game. You know,
like Perdue was moving the ball in that game, and
(01:31:33):
I think hip Jeff Brown decided to maybe go for
it instead of kick a million field goals. Maybe that,
you know, score line turns out to be a little
bit different. But you know, Maryland scored twenty seven and
and you know there's been some teams that have put
up some points on Michigan this year, and I think
that's where that's where this number maybe looks a little
bit heavy on the Wolverine side. Yeah, I think too.
(01:31:55):
The main thing that Michigan has on their resume is
blowing the doors off of Ohio State. That's obvious. But
if you start looking a little closer at Ohio State,
how great is Ohio State? I mean, really, if you
look at their body of work this entire season, first
game of the year against Notre Dame, there's a disappointing effort.
They won twenty one to ten and they were favored
(01:32:15):
by a couple of touchdowns in that when we're looking
at them, like one points against Notre Dame, right, you
go further in the schedule, they had some blowout wins
against terrible teams. Uh. They survived against Penn State, that's
a tough road game. They survived against Northwestern in bad weather.
You know, they survived against Maryland. You know, Like, how
(01:32:37):
great exactly is Ohio State. We know they have a
lot of talent with C. J. Stroud and company offensively,
but they have underperformed numerous times this season, not just
against Michigan. So if the greatest thing that Michigan has
going for them is a big win against Ohio State
and that was a shocker, sometimes there is uh an
(01:32:57):
overreaction to that of like whoa, I would wait, we
were wrong. They are the real deal, and it's like
that can be very misleading. Yeah. Yeah, Well what I'll
say is, so I think the reason why the public
all of a sudden is not all of a sudden,
well actually, yeah, kind of all of a sudden because
we were talking about how tis you was not getting
(01:33:17):
enough love forever. Yeah, I mean, the the story of
the season was, you know, every every line that we
see every time these games are handicapped. You know, TISU
is oddly either dogged or not favored by as much
as they should be going into certain matchups throughout the
college football season. But then they play in this Big
Twelve championship game and Max Duggan looks like a hero
(01:33:41):
all the way up until the end of the game
where they couldn't finish. I think of that game, like,
for example, in a vacuum, and I say, well, if
Michigan was on the field instead of TISSU, who wins
that game? And I say Michigan. You know, if if
Michigan played k State, I I I I say Michigan.
So it's it's just one of those things where I
(01:34:03):
I don't know, man, Like I I look at Michigan.
And even though overall I can't point to a single
player who maybe I would put against Dugan or Johnston
and say, well, yeah, that player clearly has the edge.
I think TCU has the stars, but I think overall
Michigan is the better performing team this yeason. I think
(01:34:24):
that's a very fair way to say it. I think
Michigan man, like I really want, I really want this
story to be good because of Michigan. Georgia rematch from
I think it was the Orange Bowl last year would
be really fun. Yeah yeah, like yeah, like that. I
think because I'm you know, I always view it in
terms of what would be the best championship game, and
(01:34:47):
obviously Michigan and Ohio State would just the ratings would
be through the roof and the hype and the fanfare.
I don't know if that would be the best game.
I don't like I think Ohio State would be favored,
and I think they would win that game. Like it's
it's really hard to beat your rival. Twice. We saw
it with George Alabama last year Alabama won the regular
season or the the SEC championship and and and Georgia
(01:35:07):
won the Natty. Like I just I could see it
just being such a flip flop of the prior game
that it wouldn't be an intriguing handicap. Like I know,
for example, if it was Ohio State Michigan, I would
likely bet Ohio State just because it would be the same.
It would literally be the exact same approach that I
took last year with Georgia and Alabama. Like it was
a very easy handicap. You say that now, but would
(01:35:28):
it change your mind depending on like what happened with
Michigan against Georgia, Like what if Michigan somehow railroaded Georgia.
I mean, then you know what I mean, like the
context it, I mean the theory right now, it sounds good,
but like I I'm really curious to see if that
is the matchup, like how did we get there? Like
and and will be more impressed with Michigan with their
(01:35:51):
final you know three games being you know, thrashing Ohio State,
beating you know soundly Perdu in the Big Ten Championship,
and then whatever happens in the semifinal against uh against Georgia.
I'm I'm very curious what what that will look like
and what we'll be saying on the other side of it,
(01:36:11):
I agree, context is everything, right, we're talking about it
with the arms. I'm going back and forth some people
on Twitter right now about Army Navy the total in
the context of the number. I'm sorry, yeah, yeah, yeah, no,
I I totally I keep I keep mixing up the matchup.
You really want Ohio State. He is sleeping with the
buck guys and Wolverine under his name into the playoff
(01:36:35):
while you're atit, He's gonna out there. We're just gonna
take a Michigan Beanie Baby and in Ohio State Beanie
Baby with him on his flight to Hawaii to try
to coax the Voodoo Dolls to get us that big
game rematch. And that no, I agree, once you add
another data point to the mix, I reserve the right
to change. I'd always say this to people when I
(01:36:56):
when I'm betting games, that they asked me for my
early lean on something, and I'll tell them and I say, well,
I reserve the right to change my opinion in thirty
minutes based off of I don't know, an asteroid hitting
the Earth or some you know circumstance changing that that
makes me change my opinion until the game actually kicks off,
and until my bet is actually locked in, I could
change my mind twenty times on these games. But right now,
(01:37:20):
if I had to pick it today, I would say
it's going to be the two favorites that win. And
I think we're going to get a fascinating rematch of
the Orange Bowl of last year, where we didn't see J. J. McCarthy.
We didn't see this new look Michigan offense that has
looked more like a Pinto at times this year than
a Ferrari. But they look like certainly a Ferrari against
(01:37:42):
Ohio State, and they look pretty good against Purdue as well.
And I know Perdue certainly not the same animal as Georgia.
But if I had to flash forward right now, I
think I would probably just put Georgia at the top
of the heap and call it a day, because I
think nose two toes. They've been the st team in
college football this year. Hey, every Thursday, be sure to

We dive into that. It's Fox Sports Radios Countdown to

MGM app. Okay, let's do this. It is some heisman watch,
(01:39:29):
So this is pretty much done to you for you.
I guess that there it is watching that's too busy
locked into this Morocco Portugal match. Morocco's twenty minutes away
(01:39:50):
from pulling off the upset. Guys, I think our technical producer,
Iowa sam Is is daydreaming about Kid McNamara, huge numbers
over there, what's going to happen? Okay, so this is
a cake walk for Kayleb Williams, the USC quarterback. He's
gonna win the Heisman, Jared, I'm not gonna steal your thunder.
(01:40:11):
Your big gripe here is that Michigan running back Blake
krum isn't even invited. Yeah, and I saw that the
voting and Bryce Young was ahead of Blake Corum, Like,
that doesn't make any sense to me. And I understand
that Bryce is, you know, the best player on the planet, right,
but he didn't have a great year. Michigan's undefeated, they're
(01:40:36):
undefeated in the National semifinals. And Blake Koram was like
eighth in the Heisman voting. He led all non quarterbacks
in winds above replacement this year. And I think the
answer to the to the test is it had nothing
to do with Blake. It's just the way that this
(01:40:56):
award is trending. The quarterbacks just matter more. And I
saw someone tweet up maybe it was like the Reddit
college football or no Context, one of those you know
meme Twitter college football pages tweeting out that they're going
to change the Heisman trophy statue instead of the you know,
the Heisman pose to a quarterback post growing the ball,
(01:41:17):
because it's just it doesn't If Blake Coreum has that
kind of a year and doesn't get invited, there is
nothing any other running back can do to become a
prominent Heisman track. I think he had one of the
best years and you know that you can ask for
is a running back, and he didn't even get invited
to the podium. Yikes, yeah, yikes. Indeed, nearly fifteen hundred
yards eighteen rushing touchdowns, he averaged close to six yards
(01:41:41):
per carrying me this dude. And then also, you know
those are like your standard issue stats, like those are like, okay,
what is your running back providing us? But it's also
the highlights, like this guy could break tackles, he's got
good shake in his game, he's got good speed in
his game. I mean he's an automatic first down. Basically,
you remove him from this Michigan team. You say it's
(01:42:05):
not easy to replace him, and it is. And it takes,
you know, a backup like Donovan Edwards to make to
make it look like it still works without him, and
Donovan Edwards is tremendous backup in in this case. But
I mean, this guy, yeah, I I think you you
stated it perfectly. If if he doesn't find his way
(01:42:26):
to the podium, if he doesn't find his way to
the three or the four that they'll sometimes invite, if
the scoring or the voting is close, um, then I
don't think we're gonna see it again, maybe ever. Because
this game is shifting away from a run game. This
game is all about passing now. Analytics tell you that's
the route every team should go, whether you're playing collegiately
(01:42:47):
or professionally. The passing game wins for so many reasons,
they've changed rules to make it so that is what
what um what analytically college football and the NFL wants.
So oh yeah, I I agree with you, Jared. I mean,
it's it doesn't make sense that he isn't there, But
at the same time, it does well, it's just one
of these I hate when it's more of a career
(01:43:09):
achievement type thing, and that's what it is with Stetson Bennett.
Stetson Bennett this year for Georgia twenty touchdown passes, six interceptions.
That's good. That's not Heisman esque at all. And uh, look, man,
he's a big part of their success, there's no doubt
about that. But just because you're good for your team
doesn't mean you're one of the most special players in
(01:43:32):
the entire college football landscape, you know. So I look
at that where it's I mean, you could have a
good argument between Blake Corum and Stetson Bennett who was
more important to their team's success. The one thing that
hurts Blake Coreum is that he was hurt and barely
played against Ohio State and they still won in a
cake walk. But ask yourself, is Stetson Bennett vital to
(01:43:56):
Georgia's success with his production this season with any touchdowns
in six interceptions? Like they couldn't find that with another guy.
I think it's easy to replace Stetson Bennett that it
is to replace Blake Coream this season with what both
guys did with their stats in this one. So it's
just funny to me how it worked out like that.
But I think it's a worse look when you're like, really,
(01:44:18):
Stetson Bennett's going if it's four quarterbacks, all quarterbacks, and
you had Blake corehum shining, as Jared said, for an
undefeated playoff team, that's that's rough. That's rough for the
running back in non quarterback community over here. Yeah, I
don't want to take anything away from Stetson Bennett, guys.
I I don't because I I do think he's It's
almost like a lifetime achievement award for which is garbage?
(01:44:41):
Hate it? Yeah, I I know, and I think I
think there's two ways to look at it. One you
look at it from kind of like the perspective of
the college football Playoff the best four teams, Right, is
Stetson Bennett one of the best four players in the country.
Absolutely not, But neither is TCU, Right, So TCU gets
(01:45:02):
the credit for the full body of work. I think
it's a lie. I think it's a lifetime achievement award.
I honestly do. And I'm not saying it's right. I'm
not saying it's right, but I I do think it
is Stetson Bennett's had all of this success over like
ten years of college football, and and he's getting recognition
(01:45:25):
for George's successful season and his successful running of the
offense kind of like floor general type. I don't I
don't know how else should describe it, but Coorham had
a better year than Stetson Bennett. I don't think there's
any debate there statistically and how we feel about them
as players in terms of their upside and the long term.
(01:45:49):
I just well, can he just win? This sounds ridiculous,
like give him the Davey O'Brien then, you know, you know,
give him, give him a Maxwell Award. I you know,
I mean, like, look, I I don't love any of this.
I think this is all very political anyways, Like you know,
who's the Heisman. It's as much about like what team
(01:46:12):
you play on and your team success as it is
or if you're playing in a Power five conference versus
a group of five conference, because that's happened to where
you've had group of five players who no question were
the most valuable player to their team in all of
college football, but will not get to the Heisman podium.
Because nobody will vote for him because nobody sees their
(01:46:33):
games right. It's happened in the past, and it's unfortunate,
but it's the reality. This is all very political, so
it would almost be a political statement, and it would
require a strong campaign to get a Blake coreum Uh
to be, you know, in New York one of the
final three for the Heisman ceremony or one of the
final four for the Heisman ceremony. It just it almost
(01:46:56):
never happens anyways with running backs, and I think it's
going to the prospect of us seeing running backs getting
included is dimmer and dimmer. They should just change it.
I mean, who would care if they just changed it
to the best quarterback in college football? I I mean,
it's accurate because it's almost always a quarterback anyways. It
wins the last time we had a defender. It's just
(01:47:18):
it is what it is. It's a quarterback award now. Yeah,
that's what it turned out to be in this day
and age, and that's invented is the hemple of that van.
I'm sorry being a finals I'm not trying to hate
on the guy, but he shouldn't be a finalist. Sorry,
you're gonna have to what about what about Hendon Hooker,
Where do we stand on him? Well, that's look, man,
(01:47:40):
if he was upright at the end of the season.
He put up huge numbers all year. But it's comparable,
it really is. That would be the counter argument. That's
the quarterback version of Blake Corum. It was a big
injury at the end, and you didn't have that that
last impression moment right, that last impression game. It didn't
happen in neither Blake nor Hended nor invited there. But
(01:48:04):
you know what, we gotta invite Isaac Loancron to the
party here he uh, he's got an award winning sports
update for us and maybe some humanitarian efforts mixed in
as well. Award winning I'm hoping for the lou Groza
Award by the way to the nation's top collected place kicker. Uh.
Speaking of inviting themselves to the party, fellas Morocco is
(01:48:27):
trying to invite itself to a World Cup semifinal party.
They still have a one nothing lead as the underdogs
against Portugal. Now crossing into the seventy ninth minute, here's
the only golden match. We made a good bowl from
(01:48:51):
very much the call by Derek Ray on Fox. That
goal scored by Morocco's use and Azeri in the forty
second minute, and that has held up throughout this moment.
One nothing Morocco over Portugal in the seventy ninth minute.
By the way, Portugal superstar Christiano Ronaldo did not start
the match, he did come on as a substitute in
(01:49:13):
the fifty first minute. Coming up next to two pm
Eastern Italy, England against France, one of America's foremost soccer journalists,
Grant Wall, has died while covering the World Cup in
Cutsar while collapse while covering Friday's quarterfinal match between Argentina
and the Netherlands, and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Grant Wall was forty eight years old. Finally, in the NFL,
(01:49:37):
the Dallas Cowboys are activating receiver James Washington from injured
reserve out of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. ESPN
also reporting that the Baltimore Ravens will activate running back J. K.
Dobbins off of injured reserve as well. Fellas back to
you good stuff, Filo. As always, it is Fox Sports
Radios countdown to kick off. Presented by bet MGM. And
(01:50:01):
this is not breaking news. The n C Double A
gets a lot of stuff wrong, but they did get
something right here. They absolutely got something right. How about this,
the n C Double A. They will grant any University
of Virginia football player whose college eligibility expired this past
season an extra year to play. It's really cool. Look,
(01:50:21):
we all know about the tragedy where three players were
shot and killed, Lavelle Davis Jr. Devin Chandler, and Deshaun Perry,
and so Virginia canceled their final two games against Coastal
Carolina and against Virginia Tech. So think about that. Think
if this was your last year of college eligibility and
this is the way your entire career ended. So bravo
(01:50:43):
to the n C Double A. This was initiated by
u v A and said they submitted the request, and
the n C Double A said, yeah, that's the right
thing to do. Good for u v A too, you know,
I look, these these situations are so difficult to deal
with from so many different stamp points. I mean, you're
dealing with grieving families who are part of this football
(01:51:03):
team's family. Uh, you know you're dealing with the player,
the loss of the players themselves, which is unthinkable. Uh,
you're dealing with a campus who's reacting to this tragedy.
You're you're dealing with uh fans who you know, feel
like in some ways maybe they were robbed of something
(01:51:25):
great and community building that sports and football often is
and does. Uh and and maybe feel like there are
a couple of players out there who they wish they
could have seen and sent off the right way on
senior Day or whatever, for for one last uh hurrah,
you know, all the whole way around. This is the
This is such a dark space and time for Virginia.
(01:51:49):
But then c double a for for all they get wrong,
this is definitely something they got right. I mean, it
was such a tough it was tragic. Um. I give
a lot of credit to to Tony Elliott done a
really good job, um kind of right, you know, keeping
the ship afloat. And he's dealt with some tragedy before
in his past, so it was he was certainly the
(01:52:11):
excuse me, the right man for the job. Um. And
there's gonna be some some fluctuation with this Virginia program.
Right there, their quarterback entered the transfer portal Brendan Armstrong,
and we'll see what this team is gonna look a
lot different next year, and maybe some players that we're
going to leave come back and it's a different vibe
(01:52:32):
it was. It was a tough year for Virginia football
even before this happened, and obviously this just completely turned
it on its head. Um, I'm fascinated to see where
this program goes from here. Sometimes the best stories are
born in tragedy, and I hope that that's the case
in Charlottesville. Yeah, we all do man, absolutely no doubt
about that. Okay, we uh, we've got a little bit
(01:52:55):
more to do before we get on out of here.
And uh, look, I think we saved the best for last.
We've got rich orin Burger, the Penn State All American.
We've got Jared Smith from picks wise dot Com, their
lead betting analyst. I'm Brian No coming up next. What
this game has in common with Thanksgiving? We'll get to that.
It's Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by bet MGM.
(01:53:21):
Kickoffs are coming, Sue, and we're leading you up to that.
This is Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by
Bett MGM the kick of sports books once again. Here's
Brian no, Rich Hornberger and Jared Spitch for it is
(01:53:43):
Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to Kickoff, presented by Bett MGM.
Big thanks to the crew here, I away say technical
producer Extraordinariy Ryan bur Shinger, producer extraordinary, Isaac Lowen Crown
Update anchor extraordinary. Were in good hands over here, good
hands and at the top of the hour, up on
game Baby, lavarre Errington, t J. Hushman's out of Plaxico Buris.
(01:54:07):
It gets you all set up for a huge weekend
in football. Here, lot's of NFL, a lot of good
NFL matchups tomorrow. Um. Okay, So the game that's becoming
more like Thanksgiving, at least in my mind, is Army Navy.
You know how people it's becoming more fashionable to hate
on Turkey. Turkey's dry, It's overrated, It's but that's what
(01:54:29):
I think about the way people talk about Army Navy.
You know, sometimes it's just this collective eye roll of like,
why would you bother its? Bro? This is tradition over here.
It's a great rivalry. We're spray painting goats, are stealing
them and it's fantastic. You gotta embrace these has been
uttered on this show this year, spray painting goats, not
(01:54:54):
unless there's like Tom Brady graffiti accident that's not happening.
Yeah yeah, But betting wise, how about this, we talked
about it. The total is thirty two and a half,
very low. But the trend of trends when service academies
have played each other, you know, Army Navy, Air Force,
(01:55:16):
when they played each other since two thousand five, the
under is forty three nine and one. So are you
swimming upstream today and betting the over? By the way,
sixteen straight unders have cashed in Army versus Navy? So
are you? Are you really swimming up string? Going with
the over? Here? I'll tell you what before you you're not.
(01:55:40):
But before I answer, I I will say this. The
thing about Army Navy that always gets me is the uniforms.
And I almost never notice like what uniforms teams are
wearing until it's pointed out by the broadcast team where
somebody goes, hey, didn't you like whatever it is? The
Denver Broncos they were they look like traffic cones. Last
(01:56:00):
night on Thursday Night Football I'll be like, I didn't
even notice, you know, but the Navy uniforms got the
astronaut theme going. Did you see the helmets there? Yeah,
so I looked this up. So Navy the astronaut theme
includes the NASSA logo on one side, hand paid in
helmets with the depiction of the moon craters in all
(01:56:23):
flex of starlight in the distant horizons of space. On
the flip side, it's got Naval Academy graduate Bruce McCandless.
Uh he did the first untethered spacewalk in. I mean,
that level of thought process just on the helmet is striking.
It's it's awesome. I I so, I mean everything. I mean,
(01:56:46):
Army has done it too. Obviously they've got the whole
rundown on on their helmets and there do you guys
want to hear that too? What Army did lay it
on us fashion East? I know, I feel I feel
like I'm like, this is torn right out of the
Vogue magazine. Here you go. Army turned back the clocks
to World War Two, the dark green and muted yellow
(01:57:08):
honor of the first Armored Division in the eightieth anniversary
of Operation Torch, which I need to look up after
the show. The design mimics the M three tank with
the jersey fading to a light ground around the mid section. Dude,
this sort of stuff, I mean, the the whole pageantry
of it, the attention to detail, what these kids get
(01:57:28):
to do, It's amazing. The whole thing is awesome. What's
the line from Neil, I'm strong that's one small step
for man, one giant leap for mankind. The NASA that's
like the quote of all NASA. Right, Um, this game. So,
I know this is a gambling show, and I know
we like to bet. I don't really have a strong
(01:57:50):
desire to bet this game most years, the trend is noteworthy.
And I've gone back and forth on Twitter today with
some people that think it's over time, right, it's the oh,
the numbers too low, it's over, And then some other
people that say, well it's not low enough. I mean,
the last two games have gone into the twenties and
thirty two and a half. If you're betting the under today,
(01:58:11):
you are buying bitcoin at twenty five you know, sixty
grand whatever the peak of bitcoin was sixty grand, right,
You're you're buying the top and you don't want to
buy the top and betting. I think that's enough reason
to stay away from betting the under in this game.
For a game that stay under thirty two and a half,
it has to go completely. Everything has to go right
in your favor. But that being said, even the two
(01:58:33):
Service Academy games this year with Air Force involved, who
has a much more dynamic offense than Army and Navy,
even those games stayed in the twenties. So I definitely
think there is a case to be made to bet
the under in this game. But I think the contrarian
nature in me really wants to see points today. That's
(01:58:53):
kind of war. I'm out here, you're looking for points.
I'll tell you what, real fast. This is one of
my favorite audio clips of all time. This is when
Donald Trump was the president. He was at an Army
Navy game, and this sort of captures what a lot
of people think about the quality of the game. Check
this out. I mean, I don't know if it's necessarily
the best football, but it's very good. But the spirit
(01:59:15):
what do they have? I don't know about the quality here.
Yes we do, we've got spirit. How about you. I'll
say this real fast before your playing the day, Jared,
if you have passion, like real passion, I, in turn,
most of the time, become more passionate myself, like the
World Cup. I'm not a soccer guy. This is passion
to find about about it watching that, And it's the
(01:59:37):
same thing with Army Navy. Man, you watch the stands.
It's great, it's fantastic. It's just enjoy it, man, don't
hate on it. Okay, let's get to this. This is
the best play of the day. All right, Jared, what
are we looking at today? I hate to do it,
but let's have some fun under thirty two and a
(01:59:57):
half the trend it's not I don't bet a lot
on this game. The smallest unit possible. Here, have some fun,
enjoy the ride, double up, double unit. No no, no,
