Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is Fox Sports Countdown.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We're setting you up for the sports weekend and covering
all the action from the stadiums to the arenas. This
is Fox Sports Countdown, brought to you my MGN, making
legendary too. The Countdown starts nine live from the Fox

(00:25):
Sports Radio studios. Here's Brian no, Rich Ornberger and Jared Smith.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Oh what is going on? Happy Saturday to you? Happy
week one in college football?

Speaker 1 (00:39):
How about this?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
We got three top ten matches. I can't even remember
Week zero and the soft launch. Now we got big
boy games left and right. This is a beautiful thing.
We will have rich Ornberger with us momentarily, but as
of now you get a steady diet of no mc
smith over at Smith.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
What the good morning, buddy, How you doing. I'm great.
Checked out UNLB last night watched a great win for them.
I don't know if you were able to. They keep
track of that game, but the scoreboard didn't have the
clock on. So they played the game at an MLS
stadium in Houston, and it was hot in Houston. I
got word from the UNLB sideline that the clock melted

(01:23):
like literally like the mechanism that you know operates the
clock and puts it on the scoreboard and puts it
on TV. It melted in the humidity of Houston, and
they were going there was no imagine sweating that game out.
The game landed right on the total of fifty nine.
Imagine sweating that game out in the fourth quarter, and
you don't know how much time is left on the clock.
That's got to be tough for all you gamblers out there.

(01:44):
Sorry about that guy.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I'm so glad you mentioned this because I had a
second half bet YEP on Central Michigan going on at
the same time, and I had the little quad box
going at the time, and one of them had Sports
Center on one head. I don't remember like the US
Open on. It was two college football games going on,
and I would peak up at the UNLV game, and

(02:07):
you know, I picked at this the in game line
and I'm like, you know, eighteen and a half, twenty
and a half. I don't know, I'm flipping quarters at
this point. I'm just gonna stay away. But I'm watching
the UNLV game, and you know, like Sam Houston scored
a long touchdown and then UNLV scored a long touchdown, and.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
It just seemed like the fourth quarter never ended, and
I'm like, how much it might I know were going on? Honestly,
we really don't know. It was the clock melted, huh melted,
the actual mechanism whatever machine, you know, the robots failed
us last night.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Brian, My goodness, that's unbelievable. But yeah, they had. You'll
see sometimes in basketball, right, like the actual scoreboard is
messed up, or like the graphic on the screen is
messed up, and so they have to have a little
camera like tight zoom in shotah of the actual clock
at the game.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
They couldn't do that. Last couldn't do it because there's
no there was it was. It wasn't even in the
in the stadium. It wasn't working. I actually I sympathize.
I think it was I forget who was calling the game.
It was the old Marlins play by play guy walls Waltz.
I apologize, but I don't know his first name. But
it was funny because he was he was like bemoaning it,

(03:22):
like like you could just hear the anger in his
in his voice when he was like, I don't know
how much dive was left in the game.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I was about to say, I wonder if they were
giving updates that there were.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
No yeah, on the field they were, and I think
it was like communicating it back to the booth. But
that's got it. I mean, as you know, if you
called games before that stuff like you rely on that
scoreboard as your crutch.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
By the way, I have to tell you a very
quick story Jared Smith, and we'll dive headfirst into college football.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
But I just had a flashback.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
So I was I had to do high school football
play by play in Fresno, California.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Shout out to the five five nine, right.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Jeff mcgretty, my boss at the time, his son played
high school football, and he's like, we got to call
high school football games the rival station, like the ESPN affiliate.
They did an amazing job. It was like college game Day.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
I'm not even kidding. Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
For their high school coverage, it was insane. And they
had people calling. You know Chris Haynes, who does.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Like yeah yeah, he was the producer.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
So I worked with Chris for years in Fresno, and
so I told Chris, I was like, I got to
call this high school game and the real like the
ESPN station, they had people all across the valley calling
in with scores and stuff. I'm like, that's no staff,
we have nobody. I was like, just listen to their
broadcast and text me what the scoring updates are. And
I'll act like we've got a bunch of people around

(04:45):
the valley as well. And so that's what he would do.
And anyway, I was about to call a game I'll
never forget. It was Clovis East and they run like
the wing tea literally Jared the wing tea. And the
guy who did color for us, he was awesome. He's
a former like assistant coach. He knew everything about high
school football. He just didn't show up for this game.

(05:06):
He got a job at the ESPN station, just didn't show.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Up for this game. So I went Vince Scully Jared.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I'm sitting there with the rosters, just calling this game
like all right, uh, Johnson back and he's gonna keep it.
And a nice game of seven right there, Clovis East
staying on track second and three.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Very nice.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
It was just the most random thing, man, But here
we are today. Yeah you ever did?

Speaker 1 (05:30):
By the way, Rich Waltz that was the name of
the play by play guy. He does a good job
for CBS Sports Network and he was on the call
last night. I sympathized with you. Rich. I'm sure you're
not listening. You're probably sleeping. But that was a tough one.
Calling a game with no clock has got to be
really difficult to do or without a color guy. Yeah,
and you don't know what broadcaster, Brian, you could get

(05:51):
through that. Come on, Well, thank you. I appreciate that.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah, I'm surprised I didn't get a Marconi for that.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Amazing. Okay, so we got today, that's right, there you go.
We've got three top ten games today, Jared.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
So we've got number one Texas at number three Ohio State.
We've got what number number one, that's right, We've got
number nine and number nine against number four Clemson, number four.
All right, there we go. We got number six, notre
number six against number ten Mi ten. Good thing we

(06:25):
don't have like the eleventh ranked team, you know, I
think it just goes to ten right there. But of
these we've got three top ten games in week one.
It's the first time ever, never happened before we've had
this many top ten games in week one. It's actually
only happened two other times aside from Week one. So

(06:47):
it begs the question, is this the biggest Week one ever?

Speaker 1 (06:50):
What would you say to that? I would say yes,
because we're always getting bigger and better every year in
college football, so next year they'll probably be a bigger
and better Week one. Although to be fair, I don't
know what the schedule is Week one next year. Maybe
it's more of a Week zero soft launch. But there
are some really unique situations in that Texas Ohio State game,

(07:11):
especially now. And to be fair, I haven't checked it
this morning because I had to get up and walk Jackpot,
and I did not check the numbers before we hopped
on the show. I should have done that. But it
does look like Texas is still a slight underdog, although
not really much anymore. It's kind of nobody really knows
who's going to close the favorite in this Texas Ohio
State game. I'm seeing some pickums. I'm seeing some ones.

(07:32):
It looks like BETTMGM still hanging a minus one on
Ohio State, but it's you know, you're laying a dollar
and two cents, so it's like barely minus one. If
Texas does close the underdog, and who knows, there's three
hours and maybe you get a big bet. On Ohio State
between now and then. If Texas does close the underdog,
I think it'll be the first time ever in Week
one that a number one team would be an underdog

(07:53):
in the eight people, which is really unique. We've seen
number one teams be underdogs before. I believe the twenty
nineteen l YOU team against Bama. Before you know, they
won that game against Bama and Joe Burrow really ascended
to the Heisman status, but people were still doubting LSU
up until that game against Bama. That was the last

(08:13):
time we saw a number one team as just an underdog, period.
But in Week one usually you get a cupcake, So
the number one team is usually never a dog. But
this is the schedule this year. This is what we get.
It's a fantastic game. It's a rematch of the Cotton
Bowl last year, if you forget that was I think
that game was played a little bit more slanted towards

(08:34):
Ohio State than this one will be today. I think
this game is very balanced, especially in the trenches. Texas
has a little bit more experience, I think, but Ohio
State very talented, and so you just don't know how
that talent's going to play. When they finally get their chance.
A lot of newcomers on Ohio State that have been
on the roster for a year or two, but they've
been sitting behind NFL studs, so they just haven't had
their chance to play. Whereas Texas does have a little

(08:55):
bit more experience. They also have both their coordinators back,
whereas Ohio State does. And I think that's the big,
the big part of that game that we're gonna harp
on today. I'm gonna go not the biggest Week one ever,
you know.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
And here's the thing, Like it seems like we're excited
for real football to be back. Yeah, I don't count
week zero. It's soft launch, you know, soft launch. This
is the mega. This is the big heaping portion of
football being back in Week one of college football. But
I don't the end. We're having a party here, but
he's excited, like, whoa, let's go tailgating keg stands everyone all.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Round, you know, we're all doing them.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
And I'm the one guy like, let's let's keep the
noise to a minimum here. You know, I don't mean
to be that guy, but I don't think this is
the biggest Week one ever, just because of the way
the postseason format is. We got a twelve team format now, right, Like,
you have a lot more margin for error. And I
think of it like this, even though these are three
great games, great matchups, top ten matchups never happened in

(09:50):
Week one before. If all the three teams that lose
these top ten games, they all three could still make
the playoffs. Yeah, hey, it wouldn't be a shock if
that's what ends up happening. So just based on that,
I would say not the biggest Week one ever, because
it's fair.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
The format has changed so much.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
If we're in like the old school BCS or the
like fourteen playoff, Oh my gosh, this is a mega thing. Yeah,
but you know, twelve team playoff, there's more margin for
error with that.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
That's a good point. It really is a good point.
I think what it speaks to is the changing landscape
of college football and just where we are right now
in the sport. And I'll be honest, I know there's
a lot of expansion talking this and that. I try
not to get too high or too low on that stuff.
I just try to react to what happens. But that
is a really good point because I do think, like,

(10:39):
let's say, Ohio State loses by thirty today and Texas
is just they're really upset about the Cotton Bowl and
they're the better team, and Arch's Arch and he's gonna
be the highst winner and blah blah blah blah blah.
Ohio State could rip off eleven straight wins and then
beat Texas in the playoff. It's like nobody will remember
what happened in Week one. Nobody will care. It's kind

(11:01):
of funny. And this is the follow up that I
have to this. Of the six coaches today that are
in these top tier games, I think there is one
coach specifically where this game matters a lot to and
I think it's Brian Kelly. Is that fair to say, like,
of the six coaches today, the one that needs the
win the most is Brian Kelly. Is that a fair absolutely?

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Because he's dropped so many openers at LSU.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
That's his brand.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
His brand is basically banging the tables like it's happening again,
you know, like last year. So yeah, he's he's kind
of like a walking punchline right now in terms of
what he does the first game of the season and
what he's done so far at LSU, and I think
that what makes it even like a louder narrative is
what Notre Dame has done right with Marcus Freeman. They

(11:50):
just in the title game. The program has ascended under
Marcus Freeman compared to Brian Kelly, and Brian Kelly has
a lot to do with the Irish being like one
of the top teams being back to prominence. But listen,
Marcus Freeman already has surpassed what Brian Kelly did at
Notre Dame. So I think that makes the noise even

(12:12):
louder of what he's not accomplishing at LSU so far.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
So it's five straight season openers twenty twenty against Mississippi State,
twenty twenty one against UCLA, then back to back years
against Florida State. Not to be fair, that was a
very good Florida State team in twenty three, and then
twenty twenty four against USC That was last year's game.
Where was it? Miller Moss right, he just went absolutely
bananas in that game. And LSU is favored in that game. See,

(12:37):
that's the difference between today and last year. LSU is
not the favorite today Clemson, and I'll be honest, you know,
we've we've kind of, I don't want to say Clemson
has been an afterthought because they were in the playoff
last year and they, you know, very good program over
the last decade. You know, they're not at the Trevor
Lawrence DeShawn Watson level, but they're still a very competent program.
But this Clemson team, people are already crowning them the

(13:00):
ACC champs, and it's fair. They have the best roster
in the conference. I think they have the best quarterback.
We'll see how Carson Beck looks against Notre Dame on Monday,
but excuse me that Monday or Sunday. The Notre Dame
game tomorrow again Tomorrow, Sunday, Sunday. But I do think
it is fair to, you know, question a little bit
of just how good Clemson is, because from what I've

(13:22):
been told and from what I'm hearing this summer, they
are the best things in slice bread and their roster
is very good, it is very talented. But they're facing
an SEC team today who also has a very good
and very talented roster, and the number is starting to
get a little bit stretched.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Right.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
We talk about this all the time. We think Clemson's
really good, but so does everyone else. So everyone else
is betting them, So does that make them a good
water today? I think the answer to that question is no.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
He might be right by the way real fast. So
I were thinking about these top ten matchups. Think of
these six schools just as a brand. Put what's gonna
happen today in this season to the side. Ohio State, Texas, Clemson, LSU, Miami,
Notre Dame. All six of these teams are big brands

(14:08):
in college football? What would your top three be today?
Like the biggest brands in college football? Of those six teams,
how would you rank them?

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Texas one, I think just because of a who is
the name of the quarterback is a brand name as well,
So they not only have a brand name of Texas,
which is a brand name in itself, but the quarterback
is a brand name. So I think they get the
double the double brand boost. If that is a thing,
I just made it up right now, so deal with it.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Sounds like, you know, like BETMGM a double boost.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Yeah you know, hey, listen, I got a parlay token boost.
But I'm ready to fire at the platter in about
forty minutes here, So you guys be better be ready.
I guess Ohio State next, but Notre Dame probably right there.
I think those are my top three. Texas, Notre Dame,
Ohio State. I think Texas is won. I think you
can probably split about Notre Dame in Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Yeah, man, it's uh, those would be the top three.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
I don't know the correct order.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
Agreed, agreed, because those are man, all three of those
are strong brands.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Dude, Sumpson's not there. I'm sorry, They're just not. It's
it's an ACC school. I don't think that they have
the national recognition like an Ohio State or Notre Dame
or Texas does. And Miami once conversation.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Miami was once there, and they're they're back in the
top ten, but you know they haven't won the ACC yet.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
How does that happen? Yeah, I'm not I'm not on
the crystal ball bandwagon either. We've discussed his shortcomings before
Layton games. Remember the Georgia Tech disaster last year. That's why,
and and that's another great example of where the betting
markets and my feelings on certain teams can be very conflicted.
Notre Dame and Miami is a fantastic football game, very

(15:54):
evenly matched teams. Miami is fantastic on the offensive line.
Notre Dame is replacing their defensive co ordinator. I think
Miami could shove it right down Notre Dame's throats in
that game. But I don't know if I trust Mario
crystal Ball late in the game to do the right thing.
And now here why I'm struggling to get to the
window on Miami. Well, I hope.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
I hope everything that you said right there plays out
again tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
I'm really hope and that's the case. Hey, we're off
and running.

Speaker 3 (16:20):

Man Jared, We're all about college football today, but for
a minute, we gotta dip a foot at least into
the micapark person's waters over here. No longer a Dallas

(19:03):
cowboy blockbuster trade going to the Green Bay Packers, and
you know we're talking. The trade was for Kenny Clark,
defensive lineman who's a good player, and two first round
draft picks. And listen, we'll get into all the nuts
and bolts of this thing. But this is the first
thing that it made me think of, was I thought
of Jaden Daniels, the Washington Commander's quarterback.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
For a second.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Follow me on this, because the big story with Jaden
this offseason has been that he's self scouting, right. He's
looking at his footwork, he's looking at things that he
can do better. He's watching film of himself trying to
tweak things like fine tune his game, and that's important.
Sometimes you get so laser focused on your opponent that
you forgot forget to self scout. If you look at

(19:49):
the Packers, how often have we looked at them being
conservative to a fault right where they didn't draft a
first round wide receiver in forever. They're like, oh, we
got to look at other needs. We gotta address other
things free agency, They're just like, it's kind of risky.
Let's take a hands off approach, no blockbuster trades, like

(20:09):
really planning for the future, ensuring carefully.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
We got to think about three years from now.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
And you can't tell me it's a coincidence that the
Packers in the same offseason drafted a first round wide
receiver and also made a blockbuster trade for Micah Parsons.
That's an organization looking at themselves saying, what can we
do differently to be in a better position to make
huge noise come playoff time. And they drafted Matthew Golden

(20:40):
out of Texas. They love this guy so far rave
reviews and getting Micah Parsons. That is an about faced.
That is a complete culture shift, and I think a
lot of it is because of the Packers scouting themselves
and seeing what they could do better and what they
might have been doing wrong in the past.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
I agree, and I'd like the record to state that
I gave out Packers to win the NFC North in
that parlay Platter Divisional edition nice multiple weeks ago. Wait
before I mean we it was profed. I mean that's
why you tune into the show we've been doing the show.
By the way, this is our fourth football season doing
the show. Time flies when you're having fun. But the

(21:17):
reason you tune in is for gems like that. I mean,
you're sitting on A and the other three legs of
that parlay. Watch it'll be it'll be like the Bills
will not win the AFC A like, right, and now
all the other three I'll hit. But no, the Packers
was the one long shot.

Speaker 4 (21:32):
Right.

Speaker 1 (21:33):
We had the three favorites. We had the Bills, the Ravens,
and the Chiefs, which I think all three of those
teams obviously in very good position to win the division.
And then the one, you know, boost to the odds
was Packers plus two seventy five to win the North.
That number is long gone. They are the favorite now.
They deserve to be the favorite. Kudos to Green Bay.
Kudos to I always get his name wrong, gutenus stuten Heist.

(21:53):
Yeah gee, I I go, goody, yeah, goody, there you go.
It's the c professional bride. No, always make it easier
for me there, but yes, very aggressive and I think
the windows open. I think they see it because they
dealt their next two first round picks. So the window
better be open right now, because if it's not, it'll
close very quickly when you don't have first round picks
in the NFL. But the other side of this coin

(22:13):
is obviously the bigger discussion, the amount of hubris for
Jerry Jones to trade away his best player and then
to go hold a press conference hours later and say
we got better. I mean that just it flies in
the phase. And to be fair to Jerry, he has
been doing this a very long time and he does
enjoy the spotlight. So I don't fully know if this

(22:36):
is entertainment, like if he thinks it's like WWE and
we're going to script this thing to end in his favor.
But it was a very very interesting decision because to me,
I've never run a team before, so I'm speaking at
this from Monday morning quarterback armchair quarterback type vibes. But
if there is one or two positions really that I

(22:58):
am willing to break the bank for, there's one on
both sides of the ball, and I think you know
where I'm going here. It's quarterback and rushing the quarterback.
Those are the two most important positions in football, and
I am willing to spend more because if I drafted
a player and I groomed that player to be my
star on that side of the ball at that position,

(23:18):
I think it is important for team chemistry, alignment, all
of those things to keep that player on my team
and to keep the train moving forward. Maybe Jerry thinks, well,
we haven't won with him and we're not really getting
anywhere with these negotiations. I wasn't there. I know he
claims he made the offer. I mean, I don't really
know what went all behind the scenes, as he said,
he said, but they don't like how it went down,

(23:39):
and they said, all right, you're gone, and they dealt him.
I just thought it was weird they dealt him to
a contender, Brian, because those draft picks are getting back.
They might be the thirtieth and thirty first picks in
the first round over the next two years, and I
don't know how much that really helps you long term. Yeah, totally.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
That's the thing is this is like, you know, he's
standing in front of a used car and you can
tell the muffler's falling off. You know that it's it's
smoking from the hood, and he's like, there's a dad
gum good car right here. You know, and you're like, Jerry, no,
it isn't right, Like I totally agree with you, or
how can you sit up there and be like we're

(24:14):
better now, We're absolutely better right now?

Speaker 1 (24:17):
No you're not.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
You're not better. And you said it very well. Where
what are the Packers These draft picks are going to
be in the twenties probably best case scenario, right.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
They might be the number one seed in the NFC
and in the Super Bowl and it might be the
thirty first pick.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Man, I know, it's crazy to think about that. And
that's the other thing that came up quite a bit
is and Jerry said this in his press conference immediately
after the trade, where he'll mention the herschel Walker trade.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
Yeah, okay, very I look that up. Very different circumstances,
incredibly different on like seven first round pitt Now it
was like three first and three seconds. Yeah, you're right,
that's okay.

Speaker 3 (24:57):
So the herschel Walker trade, you know, nineteen eighty nine in.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
The season, so just the draft picks.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Forget about the players that the players weren't the big
part of this, but the draft picks nineteen ninety first, second,
sixth round picks ninety one first and second round picks
ninety two, first, second and third round picks.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
Insane.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
This is not the herschel Walker trade at all. I'll
see that written or said from time to time. To
do this not even remotely close to herschel Walker two
point zero back then.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
You can't compare anything that happened in nineteen ninety to now.
That's crazy.

Speaker 3 (25:33):
Yeah, you're just the Cowboys are not getting that type
of return on a star player. And it's just it's
a complete joke. It turned out the way that it did.
But and you said it well too. It's not like
they dealt him to the Bills or some AFC team.
They dealt him to the Packers. If you have like
realistic visions of doing damage in the playoffs and you're

(25:55):
the Cowboys, Michael Parsons and the Packers could be in
your way time and time and time again, and they
still dealt him there crazy, I don't know, man. It's
the same thing with Jerry Jones. Well, he'll say that
he wants to win a Super Bowl, and then he
does all these things to get in the way of
winning a Super Bowl. And he's even openly talked about Hey,
if it's if it's a little dull, right now, I'll

(26:16):
stir it up. You know, we're a story. Oh he
stirred it up all right.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
I would say, you know, when you use one of
those like electric mixers and it kind of goes on
the fritz and the and the batter starts flying everywhere.
I think that's how he started up.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
But that's the thing is he can stir it up
all he wants. And there's a reason why it's the
biggest brand in sports, the most valuable franchise in the
NFL and all that.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
But if you're a fan, what do you want?

Speaker 3 (26:41):
Forget about being a Cowboys fan, any fan, what do
you want? Do you want your team to be a
story three hundred and sixty five days a year, or
do you want to win?

Speaker 1 (26:50):
You want to win big?

Speaker 3 (26:52):
And he does all this stuff to be a story
every day of the year, and most fans just don't
care about that. They want to win. They'd rather win
than be a story.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
You play to win the game. That's it. One of
my favorite quotes of all time from Herm Edwards as
a Jets fan. I miss those days. Maybe we'll get
some viral quotes from Aaron Glenn this year that kind
of mirror that I just at this point in the process,
I think it is very fair to question all of

(27:21):
the decisions, and you should be skeptical about your team
if you were a fan. And I know I had
some people in the comments this week when I was
making fun of Jerry kind of pushed back with, hey,
he's run a successful business and you know this is
the long term future, and blah blah blah blah blah.
I get that. I'm not debating that maybe you end
up getting two Micah Parsons for the price of one, right, Like,

(27:44):
maybe these two draft picks you're gonna make are gonna
be so good that they're gonna knock your socks off
for the next five years. And then I'm sure if
one of them is Micah Parsons, I'm sure five years
from now we will be having the exact same conversation
about why aren't we paying this draft pick who was
part of the Michael Parsons trade because he is going
to go off and get traded and create some kind

(28:06):
of drama elsewhere. But it is very fair to be
skeptical about the football decisions he has made. I am
not questioning his business acumen, right, I am not questioning
his acting, Chops. You go watch the cameo that he
did in Land. Man, I think Jerry's in the wrong business.
He's a fantastic actor, narrator, orator, storyteller, all of those things.
He's like the don King of the NFL. But that

(28:28):
doesn't win you super Bowls. It's been a minute, Dallas.
What would you rather have? Would you rather have you know,
Bailey and Barnum circus or would you rather have Brady
and Belichick winning super Bowls? I mean to me, and
I know that that's obviously a far cry, but they
are very, very distant from any kind of football success,

(28:51):
and that, to me is the most important thing.

Speaker 3 (28:54):
It's just a weird like reply if you're just like,
what is Jerry doing? Why didn't he pay Micah Parsons?
Why is he trading him to the to the packers?
All these like whys, And someone's like, I mean, look
at him as a businessman, though, it's just a weird reply,
Like nobody's disputing that. But we're talking about his silliness

(29:17):
and calamity, calamity decisions like getting in the way of football.
It'd be like it'd be like your girlfriend cheating on you,
and then someone's like, yeah, look at her smile.

Speaker 1 (29:29):
And you're like, what a great meal? What do you
mean look at her smile?

Speaker 2 (29:33):
Man?

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Just cooking for someone else.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Yeah, that's what I mean with Jerry, where you're like,
what is he doing with this whole MICHAEH. Parsons thing
And someone replies like, yeah, but look at him as
a businessman. Though of course that goes without being said.
But why would you bring it up now? It doesn't
fit to this discussion at all, Right, Like we're talking
about football here, not business.

Speaker 1 (29:54):
M Yeah, football and business are two very different things.
So now the business of football to me is being
able to surround yourself with people who are very smart.
Jerry's done this for years where he's kind of low
balled his brain trust, right, even Parcels, you know, had
issues with it. And you look at the coaching tree
that Dallas has kind of put forth since Jimmy Johnson,

(30:15):
and it's been kind of a Hodgepodge. I mean some
of the names like Dave Campo, like just random random
guys that you would think someone who is as well
off as Jerry would spend more to insulate himself from
going stale, like that's the one thing. And as a
Yankees fan with Steinbrenner over the years, he got a

(30:38):
lot of crap for a lot of things, but he
always put really smart people around him. Gene Michaels was
the one who really changed the course of that franchise,
was the one who brought in Jeter and you know
kind of was the scouting head of all of that,
you know, rebirth. It's about putting smart people around you.
I do this in gambling all the time. Do you
think every single slice of information I give you on

(31:00):
this show, I was digging for research. No, I get
handed things. I know where to look for the information.
I have people that I trust who give me things
and then I'd bring them to you. I'm the buffer, right,
I'm the osmosis. It has to get through me before
it gets to you. But I am the one discerning
where the information comes from. Jerry, you don't have to

(31:22):
buy the groceries, cook the meal yourself, and then serve
it to the you know, the the betting or the
football public. Like you can get other people to do
these things for you. And I think he needs to
maybe lean back on the football decision making, a little
bit lean into the business side more.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
That's the funny. I'll say this real quick. We'll get
to college football in a second. But it reminds me
of when the Cowboys passed on Johnny Manziel. This is
over a decade ago, and we thought, wow, Jerry's got
football people around him. This is not a Jerry Jones move.
This is more like a Stephen Jones move. This is
more of you know, the people around Jerry talking sense

(31:59):
in to Jerry, and like draft Zach Martin, he's a
stud offensive lineman, pass on the the flashy Johnny Manziel
who's not gonna pan out. And it seemed like, okay,
Jerry's doing exactly what you explained right there, and for
one draft pick he did, and then it went right
back to Jerry. I got this, I got that, Yeah,
what I got right cause it seemed like we would

(32:22):
be in a different spot right now based on that
Manzell draft and what twenty fourteen, and Jerry went right
back to be fair.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
A lot of times, a lot of decisions have been
made between now and twenty fourteen. Maybe who knows, maybe
he was upset, Maybe he has remorse that he didn't
get the Johnny football experience in Dallas.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
Well, yeah, right, who knows what? Who knows what's in
Jerry's head right now. But let's get back to college
football briefly, and uh, well, we've got the parlay platter
coming up next, and we'll dive deeper. I mean, Jared's
ready to talk interior offensive lineman and all top ten matchups.
You've got Ohio State quarterback Julie Insane and Notre Dame

(33:01):
quarterback CJ.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
Carr.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
They're both making their first college starts this weekend. What
do you expect from both? Who do you think will
have to do more? Is it gonna be Ohio State's
QB or Notre Dames QB and their respective matchups year.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
It's a great question. This is a really good question,
so I think, and maybe we'll get into this more
and prop it up. I think saying has a really
tough task because what Texas does really well and they
did this really well in the playoff game last year.
How about that?

Speaker 3 (33:31):
Right?

Speaker 1 (33:31):
Ohio State won a playoff game where their best player
had one catch for three yards. Unbelievable, incredible, And to
be fair, Carnel Tate had a really good game, and
it does seem like whenever defense is focused very strongly
on Smith, there is opportunities. That's why Buka led the
team in receiving last year, like Jeremi Smith, fantastic player,
didn't even lead his own team in receiving last year.

(33:54):
But what Texas does really well is they're able to
stop the run with their base front and they don't
have to extra bodies in the box because they are
very good in their front seven. That means they Texas
can kind of drop back into his own coverage and
kind of play a shell, which makes passing the ball
very difficult. You have to not only dissect his own
but then you have to be able to figure out

(34:15):
a way to get explosive plays because right now, the
difference in college football is can you stretch the field
vertically or are you dink and dunk? Because if you're
dnk and dunk and you got to go eight, ten,
twelve plays to get down the field, odds are one
of these kids is gonna mess up in that span
and you're going to be backed up penalty. You know,
negative play whatever Julian saying, has a very tough task
having to dissect that Texas defense. I think Miami's defense

(34:37):
is more gettable, so maybe they ask Car to do more.
But I do think Ohio State has more weapons. So
saying has a little more arsenal, a little more firepowered
as disposal. I think that's a long way of saying CJ.
Carr probably will have an easier time managing the Miami defense,
but it is very fair to question the weapons around them.
I think Notre Dame actually did get better though at

(34:58):
the receiver position in this a season. I think that's
why Carr probably has the better game statistically.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Yeah, I agree, Like you know, they they upgraded and
they brought back some of their guys that had success
down the stretch. You know, you still have Jaden Greathhouse,
who is amazing down the stretch. You picked up Malachi
Fields at wide receivers, so you do have some playmaker.
Jeremiah Love is fantastic to stud running back. So you
have talent around CJ. Carr, But you don't have Jeremiah Smith,

(35:26):
you know, you don't have that. Even Cartnel Tait is
a really talented receiver. So a lot of talent around.
Julian saying, I just think what's really interesting Jared is
you know, Ohio State. Julian Sayan's first start is at
home at the Horseshoe, and CJ. Carr's first start is
on the road at the you you know. And you
might think immediately like, well, you'd rather be at home,

(35:49):
and that might be the answer, but it can shift
pretty quickly.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
Think about this.

Speaker 3 (35:54):
These are the defending national champions. And if there are
a couple of bad series, maybe Julie and say in
sales a throw all of a sudden Ohio State's losing.
It doesn't take long for you to feel the crowd
is like, what's happening right, what's going on?

Speaker 1 (36:09):
What are we trailing?

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Sometimes being on the road in a first start like
that can actually be a better environment, Believe.

Speaker 7 (36:17):
It or not.

Speaker 1 (36:18):
I like that handicap a lot. Now. I think they'll
give Julian. You would hope, I mean, you know how
college kids can be. You would hope they would give
Julian at least one start against arguably the best defense
in college football to figure out how to be a
starting quarterback in the sport. But right, it's not the NFL,
which stands for not for long, but it's pretty darn close.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
Yeah, that's Jared Smith FSR betting analyst. I'm Brian, not
Rich Ornberger. On the way, we promise a heavy dose
of Rich, as heavy as possible. You know, we'll get
with Rich here momentarily. Bet MGM players will receive college

Speaker 3 (37:11):

it up, baby, you know, get it going there all right?
Coming up next the parlay platter. Weach have one selection
for you. We pull it together for a greater payout,
great opportunity for a boost. You mentioned that a little

Speaker 1 (38:04):
All right, let's do this.

Speaker 2 (38:06):
Check this out our late letter.

Speaker 3 (38:09):
All right, we each have one selection. We pull it
together for a greater payout. Our main man, Rich Ornberger,
who's a com rexis scene, is just behaving badly.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
What's going on?

Speaker 3 (38:20):
He's on the phone here for the end of the
hour with Parlay Pletter. What's your selection?

Speaker 1 (38:24):
Rich?

Speaker 3 (38:24):
Good morning to you, buddy.

Speaker 8 (38:26):
Good morning.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (38:27):
Every once in a while, sometimes you're the hammer. Sometimes
you're the nail, and I'm getting nailed by technology. So
hopefully we nail this, Parlay. All right, give me Texas
on the money line. There's so many reasons for it.
I think, first and foremost, revenge is a disser cold.
They want to make up for a hard loss and

(38:48):
a hard end to their season lambs here at the
hands of their opponent today, Ohio State. And then you
just think about the coaching continuity with Sartigians been able
to do there. And then defensively, everybody's talking about art
manning the high upside, the Heidsman potential, but defentiically nobody
talks about Texas, which is one of the top units

(39:09):
presumably in the FBF. So give me Texas on the money.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Line, right, very nice, We love it.

Speaker 1 (39:17):
So here's what we're gonna do. We were colluding and
collaborating on this behind the scenes. I also like a
pick in this Texas game, so does Brian. So not
only is this a parlay platter, this is a same
game parlay platter. And you know, I'm gonna pass the
baton to you here because I think our handicaps are
gonna be very similar. But I'm gonna give you the

(39:38):
under in the first quarter under ten and a half
because I think this game is gonna start slow. You're
gonna have a lot of juices flowing between these two
new starting quarterbacks. Texas loves to stop the run and
drop back and zone. They're not gonna give up the
explosive play, and I think we are going to see
a slower start to this game. So we got Texas
on the money line under ten and a half in
the first quarter. Bo I'm giving you the baton to

(40:00):
take us home, my friend.

Speaker 3 (40:01):
Yeah, pretty much the same line of thinking. I'm going
with Texas, Ohio State under forty seven and a half.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
I'm gonna get the hook there.

Speaker 3 (40:10):
You know, you can just go to totals and look
at all the different prices of all the different numbers,
and I do like it's dropped to forty seven. I
do like the hook in a platter, you know, a
parlay over here. So I'll take the forty seven and
a half. It's at minus a dollar twenty five. Not
crazy juice right there, but sometimes that can come in handy.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
So I'll take you under a lot of.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
The same reasoning, Jared, You're not gonna see I don't
think Texas give up just explosive plays left and right.
I think it's gonna be a couple of quarters are
going to be grinds, you know. I don't think we're
gonna have high scoring quarters consistently. And yeah, it's a
little bit like the NFL. Right, you see those two
deep shells keep everything in front of you.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
That's Texas did an amazing job.

Speaker 3 (40:56):
In the playoff game. Doing that against Jeremiah Smith. You know,
like Jared mentioned, one catch for three yards, if they're
able to hold jeer Maya Smith and check Julian Sayan's
first start.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
Where are the explosive plays? Where are the easy scores?

Speaker 3 (41:09):
They might not be there at all, let alone to
the tune of repeatedly. So, I like the under in
this game Texas Ohio State under forty seven and a
half plus three hundred for.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
The same game parlay Texas the first quarter under and
the under and.

Speaker 3 (41:23):
A great movie, right, Gerard Butler shoutout? I think that
helps our chances. Oh what's going on? Happy Saturday to you?
Is we get you all set up for a mammoth
college football menu today, three top ten matchups.

Speaker 1 (41:39):
That is a beautiful thing.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
All fired up for this, I'll tell you something, I'm
not fired up for a jeered I just got an
email here in Vegas the Golden Gate Casino. They're saying
goodbye to dancing dealers.

Speaker 1 (41:51):
Oh. I don't even know what that is.

Speaker 3 (41:53):
The girls like dance around and deal. They have dancers
all over it, you know, tastefully done. They're not stripping,
they're just dancing.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
But that's unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
No more dancing dealers over there having a whole goodbye
event on September seventh.

Speaker 1 (42:07):
What's up with that? I don't know. I mean, listen,
there's a lot of changes these days going on here
in the Vegas world. I saw our pal Bell Krackenberger
was down on the strip, I believe, somewhere in the
middle of the strip yesterday, posted a picture of his
receipt of his launch or dinner whatever he was eating,
and it was very overpriced compared to what I think

(42:27):
we expect to pay. So Vegas isn't an interesting spot
right now with some of the entertainment going on in town. Wow. Interesting.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
I thought it was going to be like a sports
betting receipt.

Speaker 1 (42:38):
No, No, he's got plenty of those. We'll have a
lot of those over the next couple of days. For sure.
You'll be in with us tomorrow. I can't wait. It's
gonna be very nice.

Speaker 3 (42:45):
Yeah, Jeff Schwartz is over there with his beloved Oregon Ducks.
So Jeff will be out tomorrow and Jared will be in.
We'll fill in Week one college football. We'll have a
lot of fun tomorrow morning.

Speaker 1 (42:56):
Yeah, it'll be a seamless transition. There you go.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
Absolutely, you gotta bone up on WNBA Jeff and I No.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
I abstains. That's your that's your moo. I don't want
to infringe on your territory. Brian. That's fair, fair enough.
How about this.

Speaker 3 (43:11):
We got LSU against Clemson, number nine, LSU against number
four Clemson. I love one of the storylines of this game.
So LSU safety Aj Holsey he will not play in
the first half against Clemson. This goes all the way
back to the last game of last season.

Speaker 1 (43:31):
He was ejected from the game.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
Originally it was unsportsman like conduct, the officials clarified it
was for fighting, so fighting carries an automatic carryover penalty.
Like He's one of the top safeties in college football,
is a key member of this LSU secondary. He's out
for the first half here and there is no appeal
according to the nc DOUBLEA.

Speaker 1 (43:55):
What do you say to.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
This, Jared, I say this should stay within the season.

Speaker 1 (44:00):
People would say it carries over.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
Listen, you can't just have a free for all and
just start, you know, throwing haymakers and not serve any
penalty whatsoever.

Speaker 1 (44:08):
What do you say to this?

Speaker 3 (44:09):
No, Aj Holsey for the first half because of fighting
at the end of last season.

Speaker 1 (44:15):
Yeah, that's a tough break. It's like a technicality in
the rule. It's like a ripple in the space time continuum,
like you do something in twenty twenty four in that
season and it affects your twenty twenty five campaign. I'm
not really in favor of it, but I understand why
there has to be some kind of punishment. And you
can't suspend him for another game that season, and you

(44:37):
can't really find him because that's not what they do
in college football, so you gotta do something like like
what I guess, and I agree. I think it's weird,
it's quirky. I don't like it, but I don't know
how else you punish him for it. Yeah, I think
this is it.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
It seems entirely goofy, but I get it, I guess, right,
But this is where it is in college football. They
you know, targeting is another thing where if this happens
in the second half of a game, well you're out
for the first half of the next game, no matter
who that's against.

Speaker 1 (45:09):
So yeah, some of these punishments are pretty harsh.

Speaker 3 (45:12):
You lose the top safety for a whole half against
kid Klubnick and Clemson who can throw it all over
the place.

Speaker 1 (45:18):
That's a big time penalty.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
But I'm with you, you know, immediately I'm like, this
is weird. Isn't there a statutes of limitation or something
going on here? But you got to do something, and
this is what they're choosing to do. So I get it,
even though I don't love it.

Speaker 1 (45:34):
Yeah, I don't love it either, But here's what it does.
It does set up a betting opportunity. You can bet
Clemson right now minus two and a half in the
first half, and I think that's a good number because
I'm seeing a lot of threes in the market. So
bet MGM is one of the better prices in market
right now for Clemson in the first half. Maybe not
fully pricing in this suspension. Now, the other thing you've

(45:57):
got to talk about here is the rest of the
secondary LSU is not very good. In fact, last year
it was one of the worst in the SEC. Brian
Kelly decided to tear it down start from scratch. Ashton Stamps.
He's the only returning starter at corner. The other corners
Mansor Delaney. He's a transfer from Virginia Tech. He was
All ACC last year, so he has some upside, but

(46:19):
that was the ACC. This is now the SEC. The
irony is he's facing in it ACC team today. You
have a five star freshman DJ Pickett, You got Halsey
of course at safety, and then another ACC starter to
Marcus Cooley from NC State. It's going to be the
other safety spot for LSU. But this was a unit
last year that has some holes to fill. They have experience,
they have talent, but when you're a new secondary, you've

(46:42):
got to come together in the preseason. So I could
certainly see some missed assignments, especially with Halsea out. And
then you mentioned the Clemson offense. All top three receivers
are back Williams Westco Moore. They combined for one hundred
and sixty one catches twenty two hundred yards twenty one
receiving touchdowns last year. This is an elite receiving group
for Clemson, absolutely elite. And you've got Kate Klubnick, who

(47:05):
started slow came on strong late. The running back group
for Clemson is even more interesting because you lose MafA,
but they moved a receiver, Adam Randall from receiver to
running back Adam Randall is a fricking beast six two
two thirty five. So he's kind of like the next
film MafA, who was a battering ram. So if you
gotta worry about Randal and commit some extra bodies to

(47:26):
the box, that will already make your secondary a little
bit thin, and then now you're dealing with the suspension.
It does feel like Clemson should have some success early
in this game.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
Yeah, and you mentioned the three wide receivers for Clemson.
Just looking at their props, all three of those guys
are listed at at least fifty and a half receiving.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
Yards, yeah, or more. That's rare.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
You don't typically see that in college football. You'll see
maybe one, maybe two, Like for instance, Ohio State they
have one guy over fifty and a half receiving yards
against Texas, that's Jeremiah Smith Carnell Tates at forty seven
and a half. But Clemson against that LSU secondary that
you detailed so eloquently, I would like to say Jared Smith,
very well done by you. But Antonio Williams sixty one

(48:09):
and a half, Bryant Westco Fifty four and a half, TJ.

Speaker 1 (48:12):
Moore fifty and a half.

Speaker 3 (48:14):
All three of those guys at least fifty and a
half or more receiving yards. They're prop bets. So kid Klubnick,
you know, healthy total for him. Also Garrett Nussmeyer the quarterbacks. Yeah,
there these passing yards they're up there. Nus Meyer's at
two eighty three and a half, club Nick's at two
sixty nine and a half.

Speaker 1 (48:31):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (48:31):
So I mean, listen, Vegas. You know, bet MGM, they're
expecting some some offensive numbers here in this one.

Speaker 1 (48:38):
Yeah, I'll be honest, I am excited to watch Garrett
Nusmeyer in this LSU offense this year. Maybe this is
a tough spot for him because the Clemson secondary is
elite and I'll get to them in a minute, but
nus Meyer very pass heavy last year with this LSU offense.
I think they need more balance this year. I mean,
he threw for over four thousand yards twenty onine touchdowns
last year. Like you might forget because he's coming off
of a year where LSU had jade annuals and it's

(49:00):
a tough act to follow. But Garrett Nussmer had a
very good season in twenty twenty four. Now here's the issue.
The volume was sky high. Forty pass attempts per game
that was the second most in the country, but only
forty fourth in yards per attempt. So he's throwing it
a lot volume wise, but the output, the efficiency not
quite there. I need more balance. This year they finished

(49:21):
dead last in the SEC and rushing. They will need
to run the ball better. I think Cayden Durham he
was the bright spot in the backfield. He had over
seven hundred and fifty yards that was the third most
among powerful freshmen. So I do think there is some
talent back there. They brought in a couple of blue Chippers,
a five star Harlan Barry. He was the number one
rated running back in the class last year. JT. Lindsay
was seventh. So you've got Durham, Lindsay, and Barry, elite

(49:44):
running back group, and the receivers. I think, honestly, I
think his LSU offense might be really good again. This
is a tough spot for them Week one on the
road at Clemson. But Chris Hilton is back. He missed
all of last year with an injury. He's got some explosion.
Aaron Anderson was their leading receiver. Very excited about him.
He looks like like absolute rock star. Then Nick Anderson
comes in from Oklahoma. He missed all of last year

(50:04):
with an injury, but in twenty twenty three average twenty
one yards per reception. They also brought in Barry and
Brown from Kentucky, holds the all time SEC record for
kickoff for turn touchdown. So they've got speed, they've got explosion,
they've got nuss Meyer who was a little bit more
of a steady hand. This LSU offense should be really
good this year. Brian.

Speaker 3 (50:21):
Well, and you said something earlier that I want to
bring back because it should be repeated Brian Kelly. Of
these three top ten matchups, right, think about this three games,
all top ten matchups. Brian Kelly needs it the most, yep,
because he's become really just a walking punchline. He punched
the table last year.

Speaker 1 (50:41):
It happened again. You know.

Speaker 3 (50:44):
That's basically as brand as I scare OREO havef to
death the neighborhood cat. He's like, oh, what's taking a name?

Speaker 1 (50:51):
You scared jack and Jackpot woke up him.

Speaker 3 (50:53):
Yeah, well he broked up there too for a second.
But think about this where you got a couple of
things colliding at once where we've got Brian Kelly, the
slow starts with LSU. The last time they won an
opening game, Joe Burrow was the quarterback. Wow, isn't that crazy.
It's been a while since LSU has won their first

(51:14):
game of the season. And you're on the road at
Clemson and you've got your starting safety who's out for
the first half. I think that's really important because you're
trying to get off to a good start with this
first game of the season. Also, like the first quarter,
the first half, like just get off to a good start,
and you're facing an offense that's got a lot of

(51:36):
potential to be explosive, and you're down. You're starting safety
because he was fighting in the last game of last season.

Speaker 1 (51:43):
That's not great.

Speaker 3 (51:43):
With everything at play with Brian Kelly and the LSU
slow starts and all of that. So I think there's
a lot that I just look at how this game
could start, and if Clemson starts off hot, they score
once or twice, and all of a sudden, you're going
uphill maybe the rest of the NIGHTSU that is not
ideal for them as they're just trying to get on

(52:04):
track starting a season strongly because they haven't in a
long time.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
Yeah, it's really tough. So I think the one benefit, right,
if we want to play both sides, and I think
this is the most important thing. If you're betting on sports,
and if you're listening to this show, you're probably involved
in that in some capacity. Don't just look at it
from one side of the equation. That's why I love
this show, because the three of us are very different
with the way we approach not only handicapping games, but

(52:29):
just the sport in general. The other side of this
equation is they've known about this for months. They know
he's gonna miss this game, and they can plan accordingly.
It's not like it just happened and he's injured mid
game and they've got to adjust their defense on the
fly and things are running haywire. They have had six
months to plan for this, So how will they plan
for this? Well, you would think maybe they play a

(52:50):
little more conservatively defensively, right, kind of like what Texas
does when we talked about it in the Texas Ohio
state segment where Texas is really good stop the run
with their front four and they're very conservative in their secondary.
They play a zone shell and they keep everything in
front of them. Maybe that's what LSU does in the
first half of this game. Maybe they play a little

(53:10):
bit more soft, which means maybe Adam Randall runs it
a little bit better. Maybe that's a prop you should
look at, because Clemson can get a little bit more
ground and pound because the line of scrimmage doesn't have
as many heavy boxes around the around the los So
I think that's kind of the other side of this
equation where if LSU knows this is gonna happen, they

(53:31):
can plan accordingly, But then us as a gambler, as
a handicapper, has to kind of read between the lines
a little bit.

Speaker 3 (53:37):
I love the chess matches here, you know, because sometimes
it's surface level. Oh you're starting safeties out, your corners
aren't the best, We're.

Speaker 1 (53:46):
Gonna throw it on you. You know.

Speaker 3 (53:47):
That's that's pretty checkers, right, And sometimes it becomes chess
where you know, Clemson says, oh, you're anticipating us doing that.

Speaker 1 (53:56):
Yep, We're gonna.

Speaker 3 (53:57):
Give you a dose of the running game here, how
about that?

Speaker 4 (53:59):
You know.

Speaker 3 (53:59):
I I love how that comes together, especially at the
beginning of a game, because you do you get a
glimpse of the chess match between OC and DC play
caller versus you know what the defense is doing. I
love all of that stuff. I can't wait, you know.
I'm like, you ever see those dog owners that put
a treat at the end of the dog's nose and
they're just kind of staring at it.

Speaker 1 (54:20):
Cross. That's how I feel about this Notre.

Speaker 3 (54:22):
Dame game, you know what I mean, Like, I'm just
staring at the treat at the end of my nose.
Itching to talk about this Notre Dame game, but I
can't wait to see how that game starts off CJ.
Carr's first start. You might be anticipating, like, hey, Jeremiah Love,
take some pressure off of our first year starting quarterback.
Let's crank up the running game. Well, Miami, they're gonna

(54:45):
be thinking that too defensively, so maybe we're seeing a
little bit of the passing game more than anticipated with CJ.
Carr to loosen that defense. I can't wait to see
the first two drives of Notre Dame's offense in that
game against Miami.

Speaker 1 (54:58):
It'd be like, waito, I think Miami's offensive coordinator Shannon
Dawson deserves some credit here. You take Cam Ward from
zero star recruit to Incarnate Word. Shout out Incarnate Word,
our favorite FCS program here on the show, and then
he goes to Wazoo, and then he transfers to Miami.
One year later, he's the number one pick. I mean that,

(55:19):
from zero star recruit to number one pick. It's really impressive.
And a lot of that, of course, was his talent.
I don't want to take away cam Ward's explosive ability
throwing the football, and I'm becoming intoxicated with his ceiling
in the NFL, which maybe we'll get you on tomorrow show.
But I do believe that Shannon Dawson deserves a lot
of credit. You know who else deserves a lot of

(55:40):
credit the offensive line coach for Miami, Alex Mirrable. This
Miami offensive line is going to be a problem for
teams this year. And I know when we think about Miami,
we think more spread it out, throw the ball down
the field, run it, blah blah blah, a little more,
you know, finesse. But this is a very very good

(56:00):
offensive line, maybe the best in the country behind Penn State,
maybe Clemson. Like I think these two ACC teams, Miami
and Clemson, are very good offensive line trenches. I'll give
you the names. You've got four starters back, All Conference
tackle Francis Myoga, All Conference guard, Annix Cooper. They've got
this kid, Markel Bell, who's the other tackle, six nine,

(56:22):
three forty. He's like two and a half. Brian knows
he is large. Matthew McCoy's the other returning starter, and
in the fifth starter James Brockermeyer transfer from TCU. So
this is an experienced, deep, talented offensive line, and I
think that is the key to this game. Notre Dames defense.

(56:42):
We know that their very gap sound right, they play
assignment football, but it's a new coordinator. They lost some
of their best tacklers Mills, Kaiser and then secondary Morrison
and Watts. I mean, these are NFL players, and I
think there might be some you know, growing pains getting
in the right gap and get this new coordinator Chris
ash up to speed, who Aerbyn Meer says was the

(57:04):
best coordinator higher of the entire offseason. I don't know
if I believe him because he's a little bit biased,
but I do think this Notre Dame defense has a
very tough task on their hands. Miami will be very
physical at the line of scrimmage. They have one of
the best offensive lines in the country.

Speaker 3 (57:17):
Well, hey man, that's a calling card of Chrysta Ball,
you know, ex offensive lineman at the U, right, and
he's all about You've seen that consistently with his teams,
like strong offensive lines.

Speaker 1 (57:29):
So yeah, no doubt about that.

Speaker 3 (57:30):
And what you said about cam Ward and going to
Miami and eventually being the number one overall pick as
a zero star recruit. I want to see what Carson
Beck can do, right, Carson Beck. He started off great
when he's got Brock Bowers and Lad McConkey around him,
and then last season it was like, whoa what happened
to Carson Becke? Right, we were talking first round and yikes,

(57:51):
wheels are off the track. Can he get back on track?
Can Carson Becks? Kind of like remember the old MTV
show Pimp My Ride, you know, like the a loppy
shows up and they do all this stuff, and man,
look at this car. Are we gonna see a little
Pimp My Ride with Carson Beck as a quarterback? Right,
We're gonna put him back together, but put the new
sound system in there. Presto, He's a first rounder again.

(58:13):
He's got the talent, but the quarterback we saw last
year was not the quarterback we started off seeing at George's,
so I can't wait to see how that unfolds. Hopefully
he'll look like the broken down version as an Irish fan.

Speaker 1 (58:24):
Yeah, that's gonna be a fun game, man, I'll be honest.
I do view Carson Beck as more of a facilitator,
so he needs the weapons around him to be good.
I think Cam Warred is much more of a playmaker,
so it'll be interesting to see how different the offense looks.
They lost a lot receiver wise, Rosprepo, George Hort and
or all gone, so it'll be an interesting game for sure.

Speaker 3 (58:44):
That's Jared Smith FSR betting analyst. I'm Brian no Rich
Honberger's still with us. You think he's hashtag supporting the
show right now? Or is he like watching IP if
he's watching Braveheart or something like that, just waiting for
college football. It'd be very disappointing right there. Hopefully he's
got his listening ears on. Hey, every time you make
a wager at BETMGM, you earn BETMGM rewards points that

(59:06):
could be redeemed for things like bonus bets or converted
to MGM rewards points that could be used towards dining
shows and hotel rooms at over twenty MGM resorts. All right,
Coming up next, Seamus McGee, team lead of Sports Training
at BETMGM, does an awesome job. Can't wait to hear
his strong opinions about the college football slate.

Speaker 1 (59:27):
We will throw a bunch of stuff at him.

Speaker 3 (59:29):
Coming up next, it is Fox Sports Radios count Down
to Kickoff presented by BETMGM. It is Fox Sports Radios
count Down to Kickoff presented by bet MGM. Throughout the
entire football season, BETMGM will offer all different types of
no sweat tokens and odds boost tokens. Be on the
lookout for no sweat same game parlay tokens, parlay boost

(59:50):
tokens and so much more.

Speaker 1 (59:52):
All right, let's do.

Speaker 3 (59:53):
This follow the money, real good money. Yes, we are
following the money with our good friends. Seamus McGee, team
lead of Sports Trading at bet MGM. Good morning to you,
happy real football Saturday. We don't count week zero in
the soft launch over there. We're often running here today, Seamus.
We got three top ten matchups, including the Irish at

(01:00:16):
Miami tomorrow night. Of these three top ten games, what value.

Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
Are you seeing?

Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
Like if you pinpoint it, you like the over in
a game? Do you like the total in the game
aside on a game, anything that you're hot on in
those three big time matchups.

Speaker 4 (01:00:33):
Guys, great to be back, Happy opening day. We don't
count week zero, of course, this is the real start.
But I'm looking at these big games, these top ten games.

Speaker 2 (01:00:43):
What about to me?

Speaker 4 (01:00:44):
Saw Ohio State this short at home the gaver. I like,
that's I'm jumping out to you. Then I'm not sure what.

Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
Does it's wild, but I think the fact that it's
Texas and it's the defense, I think that's why you're
it And that's a great place to start, Shamus. First
of all, it's obviously the game of the week. Second,
it's seen a significant amount of movement. And I texted
you this earlier in the week, Like we've known about
this game for months. The line has been up on

(01:01:13):
this game for months. Yet it wasn't until this week,
like twenty four hours ago, that we finally saw the
first big shove into the middle where people really started
to come in on Texas. We saw one very sharp
shop here in town flip actually to Texas as a favorite,
very briefly, because they wanted to get some money back
on Ohio State. And I asked you the question, even

(01:01:36):
though we've seen these lines up for months, like it's
almost like a stale meal that's been sitting out for
weeks months, yet people still want to take the bite.
And the reason is because the limits expand, and that's
when the big money really starts to come into the market, right.

Speaker 4 (01:01:51):
Exactly, And this Texas ohig State gave us a perfect
example of that. You could have bet this game back
in like May like that as far and back as
I think we had this game up maybe June at
the latest. But yeah, it's been up there the whole time,
and you wonder why the lines are going crazy like this.
And we took a few big bets yesterday on Texas

(01:02:12):
where we flipped to Texas minus one fifteen on the
money line, and then you know, we started to see
some buyback on Ohio State. I think that we're we're
still going to need Ohio State. It is a lot
of money coming in on Texas, a lot of public money.
We've taken a few big bets, but the public is
just all over Texas in this one.

Speaker 3 (01:02:34):
Have you been at the counter ever, Seamus, when you
know someone brings in a duffle bag of cash and
just pours it on the table and you're like, that's
what a million dollars looks like, right there?

Speaker 1 (01:02:42):
Has that ever happened to you in your career?

Speaker 4 (01:02:45):
You know? I haven't. And like I think of the
scene in like Dodgeball when he brings out the briefcases,
like this is one hundred thousand dollars, Like I know
it's exaggerate. I imagine it's something like that, like just
a briefcase just so you go here you got or
like we just wired it in. But I haven't. I'm
all my lookout for it. So I want to see

(01:03:05):
like a couple of duffle bags rolling into a book
one time.

Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
Though, Yeah, it's funny because it doesn't look like in
the movie they made a joke about it that it's
not that it doesn't look like that much money, Like
it's only like in your mind you think it's more
than it really is. The duffle bag stuff is funny,
I think, and we're in the content space. I think
a lot of people do that just for attention, Like
the real betters aren't betting that way, right, They're betting
five thousand here, ten thousand there, five thousand because you

(01:03:30):
can't just walk into a book and drop all that
money and he they're probably not going to take the bet.
B It's just it's it's not very economically sound, like
it's just not very efficient. It's not very uh pragmatic,
all right. I do think some of these other games
on the board are pretty lined efficiently. We haven't seen
a ton of movement with LSU Clemson. We haven't seen
a ton of movement with Motre Dame Miami. It looks

(01:03:51):
like you're starting to get a little bit of love
for the Irish kissing up against that key number of
three of those other two marquee games, what is the
biggest position that MGM needs this weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:04:03):
Right now? Out of those two games, Notre Dame is
pretty public right now, but they've also been sharp, like
this was it kind of bounced around that Notre Dame line.
We're sitting in minus two and a half right now,
but Notre Dame is it's been pretty public. LSU money line,
i'd say, is just about as public as Notre Dame
side is so I think right now Clemson outright is

(01:04:25):
probably just fine enough for us there as long as
they win the game. And then we'd probably like to
see Miami win outright because I imagine it would kill
just a ton of parlays for us with Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
How dare you root against the Irish? What's up with that?
Jamis my guys? What do you think in that game?
Do you have a side or a total that you
like Irish at Miami?

Speaker 4 (01:04:48):
I have a soft spot for Notre Dame. I also
think this team is really good. This is my pick
to win the national championship.

Speaker 1 (01:04:55):
That wow, let's go.

Speaker 4 (01:04:57):
I think this defense is loaded again. This is the
best running back room in the country. And I think CJ.
Carr is going to be I think he might be
an upgrade on Riley Leonard. I really do.

Speaker 1 (01:05:09):
Yeah, it's gonna be fun. I think that Miami offensive line,
which we just talked about, is probably the best unit
on the field, but Notre Dames defense very gap sound.
We'll see how Chris ash gets those guys up and running.
There's some big favorites this weekend, Seamus. Two really big
ones in the top ten Georgia and Penn State. Is
it just one sided action when you see a forty

(01:05:31):
forty five burger dropped on some of these numbers? Or
do you get the nibbles on the dog? We all
know how much James Franklin loves covering numbers Penn State.

Speaker 4 (01:05:41):
You'll always see the guys come in for Penn State
on those big spreads. Georgia. I've been on this show
a few times and giving out the other side of
a plus forty spread and have been successful both times,
may I addam?

Speaker 1 (01:05:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
But but even though you see a lot more teasers
with those games, that's pretty much what they're there for
for a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
Okay, Seamous special time. What do you have for us
in Week one? Well, or not even necessarily week one?
You could go soccer.

Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
I don't know wherever you're gonna go. Shamus text to
me this week he said he has a doozy for us.
So I am very excited for this all right.

Speaker 7 (01:06:18):
Week one, you get a lot of these FBS FCS games,
and you know, if you look at these lines, a
lot of them kind of they kind of stink a
little bit, you know what I mean, Like something's up here.

Speaker 4 (01:06:29):
We all know how bad Kent State is this year.
This is only a five and a half point. This
line is getting vet down as we're speaking. Kent State
Town of Mine is five and a half against Mary Mack,
who is only FBS or SCS fairly recently. My pick
is Mary Mack wins this game out right. I think

(01:06:50):
it's going to be a very, very tough year for
Kent State.

Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
Unbelievable. I think this is the first.

Speaker 4 (01:06:57):
Time on the Amack on the road. This is a
decent sized road trip for this Ohio and they're getting
beneath a touchdown. I think I saw something the last like, Yeah,
since two thousand SCS teams getting seven or less, they
win this game out right a lot like we're talking

(01:07:18):
north of seventy on the money.

Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
Wow, that is an awesome little bit of advice right there, Seamus, outstanding.
All right, Well, it will be cheering for Mirramac today,
no doubt about that. And thanks for being odd man.
Crushed it as always, Seamus.

Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Enjoy the day. We'll catch you.

Speaker 4 (01:07:34):
Soon, Thanks very much, guys, enjoy the game you too.

Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
There is Seamus McGee, team lead of sports Trading at
bet MGM.

Speaker 1 (01:07:42):
Wow. That I love that pick.

Speaker 3 (01:07:45):
You're gonna get on, Mirrormac.

Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
You're gonna throw that in a parlay?

Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
What are you gonna do over there?

Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
After? I've been you know, furiously, it's always I always
underestimate how many other people send me stuff on Saturday
mornings and usually by Friday and I'm like, oh, I'm good,
I got everything locked in for the show. I'm ready
to roll. And then all of a sudden, the Saturday
Morning Waves starts and I see all this line movement,
I see all these other people, and then Shamus comes
on and drops a pearl like that. So I've you know,

(01:08:10):
the bankroll is already pretty stretched today, Brian, but I
think we'll make room for Merrimack. We're stretched, but it's
not at capacity. Just like dessert, there's always room for dessert,
always room for Merrimack. That's right, absolutely all right. So
you know, briefly, we're.

Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
We're always looking forward to the games today, but briefly,
if we look back, just for a couple of minutes
at what's going on. They've been a lot of games
the last two days, right, how about Georgia Tech? Last
night they take down Colorado quarterback Haines King, Jared he
rushed for one hundred and fifty six yards and three touchdowns.
Georgia Tech as a team, how about rushing for three

(01:08:48):
hundred and twenty yards and those three touchdowns. It was
just bullyball against Colorado last night. And look, man, it
was bad clock management at the end of that game.
Yeah from the Buffs. Nothing personal. I love Deon Sanders,
just they had two timeouts, they didn't call any it's
poor'clock management.

Speaker 1 (01:09:05):
Got to do better than that. Yeah that you can't
take the I think Deon knows better. You can't take
those timeouts with you. The next week when I looked
at the box score of this game, Georgia Tech was
green across the board. Offensively, really good performance from them,
almost seven yards per play. Haines King is like a
battering ram. I mean, he's like, you know, what's the
Thomas the truck. I don't know, one of those kids,

(01:09:26):
toy like. He's just he's really tough, and I really
like their offensive coordinator. So the one thing about Georgia Tech,
you know, you don't think of them as like this
high quality, you know, high investment program. You know, they're
not a Texas, They're not in Ohio State. They're not
at Georgia even in their own state. They gave their
offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, a whopper of an extension this offseason.

(01:09:48):
And this is a guy that is kind of the
next great head coach, offensive mind that people think is
going to be a great head coach at the next level.
Maybe not like a high major power for conference head coach,
but definitely a power for conference head coach potential. And
when I see a program like Georgia Tech that is
not known for their heavy investment into the football program

(01:10:10):
given offensive coordinator a multimillion dollar extension, it tells me
they think they can win right now. And that was
eye opening to me. This was a tough game on
the road at altitude against Colorado. I think Colorado's defense
is very underrated. We think about Shador and Travis Hunter
and all the offensive weapons. I think that Colorado defense
is better than the offense this year because the offense

(01:10:33):
obviously is working in a new quarterback without Shador and
some new weapons on the outside. They lost a ton
on the offensive skill position group, but that Colorado defense
is feisty. And again, you're on the road, you're at altitude.
It's a tough environment in Boulder, and I thought Georgia
Tech's offense showed me a lot of good stuff last night,
And this is going to be a really interesting acc team.
Not a lot of people are talking about Georgia Tech.

(01:10:54):
We're talking about Clemson, We're talking about Miami. I think
Faulkner and King and this Georgia Tech offense is going
to be a problem for teams this year.

Speaker 3 (01:11:01):
Well, hey man, it's crazy. It started off so badly
for them where they have three straight turnovers. Yeah, Georgia Tech,
and then all of a sudden, it's like they're just
running it down their throat. I will say it was
a bad side sign for Colorado heading into that game
that they retired their live mascot.

Speaker 1 (01:11:17):
Do you see that?

Speaker 3 (01:11:18):
Colorado said that Ralphie six. They cited Ralphie's indifference to running.
The buffalo runs around. Yeah, Ralphie six, like, I'm good man,
I really don't feel like running. So that was the
reason for the early retirement. That's not a great sign
for the twenty twenty five season, is it not?

Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
The Buffalo doesn't he want to run? That sounds like
Jackpot on a hot day. When I'm like, hey, dude,
we gotta go out for our walk, He's like, I
am against this, my friend, Please, I want to stay
here and snuggle up on the couch in the air conditioning,
no doubt.

Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
How about we got to mention this too. This was
what Thursday night, Boise State. It's a ranked team, twenty five,
twenty fifth rank Boise State destroyed by South Florida on
the road. No Ashton genty equals out for Boise State.
That was a rough one man. They got pummeled in

(01:12:11):
that game.

Speaker 1 (01:12:12):
Yeah, the numbers were really ugly. I'll pull up the
box score right now. I think when you talk about
Boise you have to talk about the Ashen genty effect.
You know, what is their offense going to look like
this year without them? And I think we got our
first glimb. So they are the anti Georgia Tech. They
are all red across the board on their offensive numbers.

(01:12:32):
Four point seven yards per play. That is not going
to get it done in college football, and not against USF.
Now you could say the weather might have played a
factor here. I don't know if you've been to the
South Florida area around August time, but it is a rainforest,
really muggy, really hot, not something Boisey State kids are

(01:12:53):
probably used to, especially if they're from that part of
the country. But you have to really chalk it up
to Ashton Jen and I think that you know, Genty's
looking a lot better now than he did before that game,
because when as a quarterback and as an offense, it
is easy to diagnose a defense when you know they

(01:13:15):
have to stop the run. They have to commit eight
nine guys in the box to stop the freight train
of ash and Genty, even though there's more traffic around
the line of scrimmage. It is easy for a quarterback
going into a play knowing the defense has to show
their hand with a heavy box. It makes your job
a lot easier when you're changing the play and when

(01:13:36):
you're just calling plays to be able to show what
the defense is going to do without really having to
really do much Like you know going in they're going
to show you eight nine guys in the box. Well,
now we don't really know what the defenses are going
to do against Boise State because they're not worried about
Genty in the backfield. So it makes Mattson's job the

(01:13:56):
quarterback a lot more difficult and he just did not
handle it well.

Speaker 3 (01:14:00):
By the way, real fast Nebraska, shout out go Big
Red their win against Cincinnati, right with Mahomes and Kelsey
in the luxury box with their significant others. I didn't
realize that Nebraska was this bad in one score games. Now,
shout out to them. They won this one score game
against Cincinnati on Thursday. Did you realize this, Jared So

(01:14:22):
last year in Nebraska was one in five in one
score games. You go back to twenty eighteen, in one
possession games, Nebraska was ten and thirty five.

Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
It's ridiculous. That is absurd.

Speaker 3 (01:14:36):
And they got the one score win against Cincinnati right there.

Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
So shout out Matt Rule year three.

Speaker 3 (01:14:42):
Matt Rules had a lot of success in year three
at other stops, you know, double digit wins a couple
of stops, So maybe this is a year for Nebraska.
It's weird with Riola. He's such a talented quarterback, but
it's like he just hasn't found a groove just yet. No,
they're so careful with him, you know, I get like
Chris de Ball justin Herbert vibes with Dylan Riola at Nebraska.

(01:15:05):
What's your take on him.

Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
Well, here's the issue with Nebraska. They don't have a
way to stretch the field vertically. Yeah, and that's an issue.
Here's the other issue. They're max protecting Riola with six
and seven guys in the blocking scheme and he's still
taking pressure. And I know Cincinnati's defense was a little
feistier maybe than people thought, and that's fair. But if

(01:15:27):
you're going max protect, which is a tight end stays
into block, the running back chips and then maybe runs
a flat route. But for the most part, it's five
offensive linemen plus the tight end plus some help from
the running back. If you can't keep Riola upright when
they're only rushing four or five guys against your six
or seven, that's a problem. That's going to be a

(01:15:47):
problem when you go play Michigan. That's going to be
a big problem when you go to Penn State. So
as good as Riola is, if you can't protect for him,
and if you don't have a deep vertical threat, how
good can this team really be unless their defense is
just lights out, which it was lights out and it
is very good. But I'm worried about the ceiling for Nebraska.

(01:16:08):
I think the floor is considerably higher. Feels like a
seven or eight win team at their floor, but the ceiling,
which people expected to be nine to ten wins, maybe
a playoff berth, that ceiling feels a little bit unattainable
based off of the schemes that I saw in the
game the other night. That's Jared Smith FSR betting analyst.

Speaker 3 (01:16:26):
I'm Brian no Rich Orenberger coming up with us right
around the corner.

Speaker 4 (01:16:30):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:16:31):
We'll have to prop it up, and it is time
right now for the tire Rack play of the day.

Speaker 5 (01:16:35):
King claps, snaffs, finks, the toss runs right, puts a
hand in the back.

Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
Who's one breakthrough? He's in the thirty thirty.

Speaker 6 (01:16:41):
He's gone fifteen ten, five touchdown, He's changing us seven
to go?

Speaker 3 (01:16:50):
Is that Tom Brady in the background with a little
let's go right there?

Speaker 1 (01:16:53):
I love that?

Speaker 3 (01:16:54):
Great thanks on the Georgia Tech Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
Very well done, hey.

the prop betting market. Lots to decipher here in Week

(01:17:20):
one of college football, we'll compare notes Fox Sports Radios
count Down to Kickoff presented by BETMGM. It is Fox
Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by bet MGM.

Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
Throughout the entire football season.

Speaker 3 (01:17:33):
BETMGM will offer all different types of no sweat tokens
and odds boost tokens. Be on the lookout for no
sweat same game parlay tokens, parlay boost tokens, and so
much more.

Speaker 1 (01:17:45):
All right, let's do this prop it up plays.

Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
Ah, Yes, the prop betting market so much to dive into, QBS,
wide receivers, running backs, all that good stuff. Un Burger
back with us here staring at a dead.

Speaker 1 (01:18:03):
Comrades never a good thing, never good. But prop betting's
a good thing. What do you have for us, Rich.

Speaker 8 (01:18:11):
Yeah, prop betting is a good thing. Jet comraxes are
a bad thing. All right, So let's get into it.
This is a correlated pick. As I've learned from Jared Smith.
If you like a pick, well, then go deeper. And
so I'm going to go deeper.

Speaker 1 (01:18:25):
Here.

Speaker 8 (01:18:25):
If I'm expecting Texas to win, it's because I'm expecting
Ohio States to struggle, especially getting the ball to their
favorite receiver.

Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
Now, Jeremiah Smith piled.

Speaker 8 (01:18:35):
Up thirteen hundred yards last season receiving, However, only one
hundred and seventy of those yards came after contest. Texas
is going to be all over him. He's going to
be bracketed and coverage, He's going to be doubled in coverage,
and I think they're going to try to limit his
exposure in the game, just like they did in January.
So give me the under whatever you find eighty three

(01:18:56):
and a half, eighty two and a half. Give me
the under on Jared's Jeremiah Smith for dyards.

Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
Okay, I'll take the under on Jared Smith's receiving yards
against Texas to today. By the way, I think that's
it feels like a probably pretty safe bet. Guys. This
is why I love rich because even though he's not
with us, you know today, he is still right on
track in alignment with where my brain is. Julian's saying
under two hundred and twenty one and a half passing

(01:19:24):
yard similar vines, Texas is gonna stop the run with
their front four. They're gonna play a zone shell defense.
They are not going to allow the explosive plays. They
are not going to allow that raucous Ohio State crowd
to get excited and get all the deep plays, and
they're gonna make saying, dink and donk go eight ten,
twelve plays. Prove to me that you aren't going to

(01:19:44):
make the mistake as we elongate these drives. So saying
under two hundred and twenty one and a half passing
yards for me.

Speaker 3 (01:19:50):
Today, guys, Okay, all right, man hook the better show
up today.

Speaker 1 (01:19:54):
That's all I gotta say.

Speaker 3 (01:19:55):
You know, uh like your picks very nice. I'm gonna
go with roll tide role. Give me Alabama running back
Richard Young going Dick Young on you over here right
over sixty and a half rushing yards.

Speaker 1 (01:20:08):
That offensive line is a problem.

Speaker 3 (01:20:11):
They got some dudes, and going against Florida State, I
expect them to have a lead. I expect them to
be running the ball and no jam Miller, the starter
is out. So I'm going Richard Young over sixty and
a half rushing yards. I think Bama with that offensive line,
especially with the lead, they're gonna lean on it, and
I would expect him to get enough opportunities to get

(01:20:32):
over that mark. So I'll go Richard Young, not a
household name yet, but Bama running back Richard Young. There
you go.

Speaker 1 (01:20:39):
You like that one?

Speaker 3 (01:20:42):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
What do you have?

Speaker 1 (01:20:42):
Yeah? I don't know. Merri Mack, that's a that's another one.
I just bet it. Actually during the break, Deshaun Bishop
over sixty eight and a half rushing yards. This is
the Tennessee running back. He beat out Duke transfer Star
Thomas for the RB one job. Syracuse cannot stop the run.
They were one hundred and seventeenth last year and they
lost a lot on both sides of the ball. I
think Deshaun Bishop first touchdown bet also not bad at

(01:21:03):
five to one, but over sixty eight and a half
rushing yards for the Tennessee back.

Speaker 3 (01:21:07):
Okay, nice, love the extra credit picks right there. Very nice.
All right, come it up next. The red dot is
on everyone else. Oh, good morning, Happy week one to you. Huh,
we have made it ball officially back. We will get
to The red dot is on everyone else here momentarily. Hey,

this quote from Arch Banning Jared Smith, which is he's like,

(01:21:53):
hey man, the target's not on us, the target's on
everyone else. Check out what Arch had to say earlier
this week.

Speaker 1 (01:22:00):
We kind of try to shift the narrative and we're
going for everyone else targets hunt on our back. We
had a red dot on.

Speaker 3 (01:22:05):
Everyone else, the red dots on everyone else.

Speaker 5 (01:22:08):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (01:22:09):
I love that quote. Number one Texas at number three
Ohio State. Instead of us being the hunted, we're the hunters.
Love that for March Manning.

Speaker 1 (01:22:17):
Huh. Great stuff. Well, according to every media outlet in
the country, he's already won the Heisman. I don't know
if you heard, Brian, but they've already given it to him.
It's already over. Yeah, yeah, season's done. He's the Heisman
Trophy winner. No, there's not a lot of hype that
can be more than what we've seen from the Arch hype.

(01:22:37):
He's handled it pretty well, right, I think he's handled
himself pretty well. I'm not surprised because of who his
you know, dad is and who his family is, He's
able to handle this type of I don't want to
say undo hype because I think he definitely deserves to
be the Heisman favorite. His team is arguably the best

(01:22:59):
roster in the besides maybe Penn State, and he has
the name, so he has all of the ingredients are
there for chef Manning. Now all he has to do
is go out and play, which is the hardest part.

Speaker 4 (01:23:10):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:23:10):
Here's the problem with Texas's offense in this particular game.
We know what they want to do. Everyone on the
planet who watches Texas and Sark knows what they want
to do. They want to run the ball wide zone.
They've done it effectively very well over the last few
years with this scheme under Sark, and I think something

(01:23:32):
that they can do more of this year that they
haven't been able to do in prior years with quinn
Ewers is run the quarterback with Arch, and I think
that's going to be the most intriguing change up to
what we usually see, which is Wisner and Baxter. And
these are very good college backs, and I think they're
going to try to pound the rock right down Ohio
State's throat. Ohio State's dealing with a little bit of

(01:23:54):
attrition defensively. They have talent for days, but they lost
a lot upfront. Amalo I always get his name wrong,
TiO Malalo JT. Let's call him JT. Tyler Williams and
Ty Hamilton, those guys are on the NFL. You do
get bo Atkinson, who comes in from UNC, is a
rock star. He's gonna have to set the edge because
that wide zone scheme wants to get outside the tackle.

(01:24:16):
That is the goal for Texas. Running the ball outside
of the tackles, well, that means your rush ends not
only have to rush the passer, but they have to
set the edge for when you are trying to stop
the run. Atkinson's a stud UNC transfer. He's gonna play
a massive part, not only today but this season in
being the resurgence on that Ohio State offensive line. They

(01:24:37):
have talent for days. Brian Again, ken Yata, Jackson, Kaden Curry,
Edward Houston, These are all five star, top one hundred
type recruits. They added a kid from Idaho State who's
pretty good. But we heard Ryan Day and Larry Johnson,
the defensive line coach, say in the offseason that he's
a little concerned about the depth. They are not as
deep as they were last year at this position up front.

(01:24:58):
They might be just as talented. We just haven't seen
these guys play yet, so that is kind of the okay,
time to peel back to curtain and see how good
this Ohio State defensive line is, because if Texas can't
control the line of scrimmage, and to be fair, they
lost both starting tackles. Cameron Williams got drafted by the
Eagles in the sixth round and Calvin Banks was a
top ten pick to New Orleans, so they are replacing
some talent as well up front, but they're also loaded

(01:25:21):
and these guys are all five star kids that are
coming in and it's just a matter of how quickly
can they get up to speed. I think Texas wins
the line of scrimmage on offense, Brian, but I'm not
one hundred percent sure.

Speaker 3 (01:25:32):
I'm really interested as much as is going to be
made in this game. About the quarterbacks. I'm really interested
in the running games of both teams because you mentioned
it with Weisner and Baxter on the Texas side, how
much are they able to run the ball effectively and
take pressure off of arch Manning take more off of
his plate, you know, because the less the running game does,

(01:25:53):
the more Arch Manning is going to have to do.
The less Ohio States running game does, the more Julian
Sayan is going to need to do. So James P.
Po Bulls, CJ. Donaldson Junior, those are the new guys
at Ohio State. It's like, wait, what I'm used to
like Henderson and Judkins. Who are these guys again?

Speaker 1 (01:26:09):
Right? That welcome to college football, man revolving door.

Speaker 3 (01:26:13):
And I'm curious to see how well and how effective
Ohio State's running game is because you've got to be
able to run the ball effectively to count on generating
consistent offense. Right it's Julian Sayin's first start in a
huge spot against the number one team in the country,
who's got dudes on defense, you know, So you got

(01:26:36):
to crank that running game up. And if you look
at Ohio State, we're wondering about the offensive line right,
a lot of turnover. They're talented. I mean, you know,
breaking news. Ohio State's got a bunch of talented guys
waiting in the wings. But again, like we don't know
until we know what these guys are going to be
able to do, especially in a big spot like this.

(01:26:57):
So that inexperienced Ohio State off defensive line, you know,
the new running backs there, And I'm so curious if
Jeremiah Smith. That's the big question, right, Jared, is if
you look back to that Bowl game, Texas was like, Okay,
Jeremiah Smith is not killing us. In fact, Jeremiah Smith
isn't doing anything whatsoever in this game. They bracketed him.

(01:27:19):
They're like, you have to beat us some other way.
Not gonna be Jeremiah Smith. I don't know why they
would change that mindset going into this one. Who's a close,
hard fought games. A crazy turnover by quinn Ewers at
the end of that thing, but.

Speaker 1 (01:27:32):
Texas right there right in it.

Speaker 3 (01:27:34):
So I don't know why they would change anything in
terms of their approach to Jeremiah Smith. And if he's
held in check, then you gotta be able to run
the ball effectively against Texas and I'm not sold that
they're going to be able to.

Speaker 1 (01:27:46):
I don't think they're going to. And here's the handicap
on Ohio States offensive line right because it starts up front,
just one starter back. They lost both tackles, Donovan Jackson
Josh Simmons. Both of those guys were first round picks.
I mean, you know, and the arguably two of the
best tackles I think I saw. It was the first
time since like the seventies that you saw two tackles

(01:28:08):
from the same team drafted in the first round. That's crazy.
Now the new projected left tackle and to be fair,
I don't even know who's gonna play left tackle or
right tackle in this game. This is what we're hearing.
These lines can be shuffled. They have two options at
left tackle. Austin Saravel played guard last year, had a
below average Pro Football Focus grade in both run and

(01:28:31):
pass blocking. He is the listed starter. They also brought
in a transfer from Rice, Yes Rice, the Rice owls
ethan Owenawa played just eight games for Rice last year,
very limited experience against top caliber talent. One of those
guys is gonna be the left tackle. I don't know who,
probably whoever plays better. The new starting right tackle, Phillip Daniels,

(01:28:52):
is a Minnesota transfer logged only three hundred snaps at
right tackle last year, below average Pro Football Focus grade.
Those are your tackle options for Ohio State trying to
defend the edge against an unbelievable Texas defensive line. All
American Colin Simmons last year led the team with nine sacks.
Him and Anthony Hill, the top linebacker for Texas, are

(01:29:15):
probably the top two defenders as a duo in the country.
I think Caleb Downs individually is the best defensive player
in the country, but Hill and Simmons, who was a
freshman All American last year, I think make the best
one to two punch. They also added three high level
defensive linemen in the portal Travis Shawl from UNC, a

(01:29:36):
kid named Watson from Syracuse who was on the All
True Freshman team last year, and Cole Brovard from Perdue
who was All Big Ten honorable mention. I mean, these
are dudes upfront for Texas. These are high level power
for transfers that are all fighting for spots along the
defensive line. They are absolutely loaded and oh, by the way,
five star freshman Justice Terry also is going to crack

(01:29:59):
the rotation up for Texas again, dudes for days now.
The one thing about Ohio State's offense, while Jeremiah Smith
is held in check, it does open up options for
other guys. For example, Carnel Tate had a really good
game in the Cotton Bowl last year, seven catches eighty
seven yards. He also remember he dropped the wide open
touchdown on the first drive, should have had eight catches
for ninety plus and a tuddy. So Smith's presence alone

(01:30:23):
opens up options for other players. In every game last year,
Brian that Jeremiah Smith had three or less catches, Tate
had at least sixty receiving yards, and Igbuka of course
led the team in receiving. So while Jeremiah Smith might
be held in check, there will be other options available.
I think for Julian saying, the question is A, are
they going to be able to run the ball enough
to slow down this Texas pass rush? And b will

(01:30:45):
say and have enough time to hit these guys if
the offensive line doesn't hold up. I don't know the
answer to those questions, but I'm leaning to the no
on both.

Speaker 4 (01:30:52):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:30:53):
The other thing to keep in mind with Ohio State.
As much as we're talking about the players on the field,
which makes a lot of sense, we got it about
the coordinators. Yes, they lost both coordinators, right, No more
Chip Kelly he's with the Raiders coaching up Ashton Genty right,
And Jim Knowles he's not there anymore either. So you've
got Brian Hartline. He's the new offensive coordinator. Former receiver there, right,

(01:31:17):
shout out to the Finns. He was with the Dolphins
for a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:31:19):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:31:20):
Matt Patricia, he takes over the former Patriots guy, former
Lions head coach. Right, Matt Patricia is the new defensive coordinator.
So think about this too, man, where you're playing the
number one team in the country, and I know you're
at home and you're the defending champs, but you've got
two new coordinators and a lot of new talent. And

(01:31:40):
I think as much as we're looking at say Julian saying, hey,
finding a rhythm, you know, getting comfortable, the same is
true for new coordinators.

Speaker 4 (01:31:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:31:49):
Brian Hartline has to get into a groove calling offensive plays.
Matt Patricia's got to find a rhythm against Arch Manning
and all the talent Texas has That's not the easiest
thing in the world to do, and I would trace
it right back to their head coach Ryan Day. Ask
yourself this, would you say that's all right? They've got
Ryan Day right?

Speaker 1 (01:32:10):
Would you say that Friday night?

Speaker 3 (01:32:12):
Like? He's shown tendencies time and time again to get
tight in tight moments right or against Michigan. They have
all this talent last year and then tight right like
we were in this slobber knocker weird game. He gets
tight a lot, and so I'm really curious to see
how all of that plays out. It's not like Ohio
State doesn't have talent. They have gobs of talent, but

(01:32:34):
two new coordinators trying to you know, mix and match
that talent, call the right plays all that. It's hard
against the number one team to get that right out
at the gate. I think they're gonna be a handful
of snaffoos today. That's why I'm on Texas. I like Texas.
It's the right side in this one.

Speaker 1 (01:32:53):
Me too. I mean, I think you're hearing a little
bit coming up on our rapid Fire segment about the
one thing that scares me is that we're all on text.
It never ends well, I know, but maybe it'll end
well for us today. To your point about the coordinators,
I think the biggest thing to watch this year, and
I think, listen. Patricia is an NFL mind, and I

(01:33:15):
know he's a little quirky, he's got the pencil in
his ear, and I don't really care about any of that.
All I care about is what are your results. His
results have been pretty solid when he's only had to
worry about defenses, so I think eventually they will be
a little bit more NFL scheme, whereas Knowles was I
think a little more straightforward and they were actually, to

(01:33:36):
be fair, Knowles kind of ran an NFL scheme too.
They like to run a lot of Cover zero. I
saw a lot of Cover eight last year too, like
they mixed it up a lot. I did a film
study on the Oregon Ohio State game and just how
good that defense was in making Dylan Gabriel look very look,
very small and very weak last year, and that was
one of the few games where I think Oregon's offense
really didn't show up. But there is a certain vibe

(01:33:58):
to Patricia that rubs people the wrong way, and I
do think he has the talent to succeed. The more
curious relationship is going to be on offense, because I
think chip Kelly, first of all, the Raiders big upgrade
last year. You know, from last year's offense being able
to go from Luke Getzi to chip Kelly. But losing
chip Kelly is also is a big loss because I

(01:34:20):
think his mind and how he breaks down, especially the
run game. Right, that's why we're worried about the Ohio
State run game. Go back and watch how effective Ohio
State's running game was in the playoff last year. They
just turned it on to a new level and they
were unbelievable. They ran a lot of duo, which is
when both guard tackle center guard will double team the
two interior linemen and it's a very popular NFL scheme
and it was really effective for Ohio State in the

(01:34:41):
playoff last year. I don't know if they're gonna be
able to do that this year. They're not as good
at the running back position, They're not as good as
the offensive line. Then I was a much experienced there
and I don't know what the scheme is going to
look like. And then the relationship between Brian Hartline and
Ryan Day, Like if things start slow, which we expected
to start slow first quarter under full game under. Is
there going to be a point where Ryan Days says,
screw you, Brian, I'm taking the reins here. And that's

(01:35:03):
gonna be the interesting dynamic to keep an eye on
this year.

Speaker 3 (01:35:06):
Yeah, let me just say one last thing that that
might sound a little crazy, maybe stupid at first. Maybe
it'll continue to sound stupid.

Speaker 1 (01:35:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:35:15):
Matt Patricia, it's it's he's kind of like the nickelback
of coaching right now. It's just it's just fashionable, right,
It's just like, ah, it's freaking guy, really walk through that, Okay.
As a defensive coordinator under Belichick, the Patriots had a
lot of success. Yeah, they're winning super Bowls left and right.
It's not you can't just win, you know, forty one

(01:35:37):
thirty three left and right. Those were some you know,
like low scoring super Bowl wins at times. They won
a lot of playoff games, low scoring games. Matt Patricia
had a lot of success as a defensive coordinator, and
then he became a head coach with the Lions. It
was a disaster. And then he's calling offensive plays somehow.

Speaker 1 (01:35:56):
I don't know where that came. From ridiculous with.

Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
The Patriots, and it's like we've we've just been in
this mindset of like Patricia sucks, Like you just hear
that routinely. He's back to being a defensive coordinator, right,
Like he was never a disaster as far as that goes,
that that's his true calling card, and back in college,
I think it's just I've heard too many like, oh,

(01:36:21):
they're probably gonna lose a couple of games just because
of Matt Patricia, And it's like I expect for them
to be some poor calls here and there and some
mistakes here and there, but to make it sound like
they're just in poor hands, this guy doesn't have a clue.
That could not be further from the truth.

Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
Right we were talking about pimp my ride.

Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
Right like with with with cam Ward zero recruit to
a number one overall pick and see if that can
happen with Carson Beck. I think we need to pimp
my ride with our overall outlook. As far as Matt
Patricia the defensive coordinator, he's not the disaster many people
make him out to be.

Speaker 1 (01:36:59):
Totally agree, and that's where the narrative can work in
your favor. In the gambling market. Right, Ohio State has
so many good players on defense. Now again, they're not
as experienced as they were last year upfront or even
in the secondary, but they are still loaded with five
star after five star after five star and then, oh,

(01:37:21):
by the way, bo Atkinson, North Carolina's best defensive player, decided,
I don't want to play for Bill Belichick. I want
to go play for Matt Patricia instead. And that being
obviously money was a big factor here, I'm sure, but
it's just you just look at the players he's working with,
and then you throw in the fact that he is
going to be except for this game and maybe the

(01:37:42):
game against Penn State, he is going to have the
vastly more superior roster in every game he coaches this year.
It's like when you give an average, you know, Carpenter
the best tools, He's probably gonna make something better than average.

Speaker 4 (01:37:55):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:37:55):
So I'm not saying Matt Patricia's average, but this narrative
that he is is actually working in our favor if
we want to bet Ohio State at some point this year. Again,
I'm not worried about Patricia's defense. The biggest question I
have with the coordinator switches is the continuity on offense,
because I am concerned that if things do start slow.
You mentioned it, Brian Ryan Day TSS tight sphincter syndrome.

(01:38:20):
Is he going to start to do all kinds of
weird stuff like, Hey, no, you know's he gonna get
in Brian HARTLINZ here not not. We're doing this And
I don't know the answer to these questions. I'm not
in the meeting rooms. I'm not in the practice rooms.
I'm just speculating on how I see the chain of
command flowing. Last year, Chip Kelly had full reigns. This year,
I'm not so sure if Brian Hartline is given the

(01:38:40):
full keys to the castle TSS there it is right there.
But our first mention of many this year probably tremendous.

Speaker 3 (01:38:48):
That's Jared Smith FSR, betting analyst. I'm probably to know
rich Orenberger with us'll be with us at the end

Speaker 3 (01:40:15):
All right, the moment I've been waiting for once tomorrow night,
but the moment on this show, I've been winning number
six Notre Dame against number ten Miami. That is right,
the rebirth of the old rivalry, if you will, great.

Speaker 1 (01:40:29):
Top ten matchup.

Speaker 3 (01:40:30):
How about this the comments from Notre Dame.

Speaker 1 (01:40:32):
Head coach Marcus Freeman.

Speaker 3 (01:40:34):
Do you read into this and say, you know, maybe
a bit of a conservative game plan?

Speaker 1 (01:40:39):
It would make sense CJ.

Speaker 3 (01:40:41):
Carr first start in college for the Irish. This is
what Marcus Freeman says about CJ. Carrey says every play
it can't be a bomb. Trust the game plan, trust
what you see, be who you are, and win this play.
I mean, I hear conservative, conservative, conservative of conservative. What
do you hear as far as what you might see

(01:41:03):
tomorrow night? In terms of what Marcus Freeman said about CJ.

Speaker 1 (01:41:06):
Carr, Well, here's the good news for that comment, because yeah,
I think on the surface it's hard to not think conservative.
But here's the good news. I do think this Notre
Dame offense has some dudes who can stretch the field.
I'm actually really excited, frankly about the receiving group this year,
and you mentioned great House, who returns from last year.
He was kind of their best player down the stretch

(01:41:27):
Malachi Fields. He had over fourteen hundred receiving yards in
two years at Virginia. You also have Will Pauling, who
comes in from Wisconsin had over twelve hundred receiving yards
in two seasons with the Badgers. So you have three
really good power for caliber receivers, which is not something
I think Riley Leonard had at his disposal last year.
So if CJ. Carr does get comfortable, that is a

(01:41:52):
weapon in your back pocket. Here's the other weapon, and
it's kind of the Boise State thing, right, It's the
Ash and genty effect. You have the running back in
college football period. End of story. I don't want to
hear any debate on that. Jeremiah loves the number one
back in college football. Well, their number two back might
be a number one back on most other teams. Jadarien

(01:42:13):
Price the average over six yards of carry last year.
So you get this Ash gingent the effect where CJ.
Carr knows he's going to have to examine the line
of scrimmage and likely navigate a lot of heavy boxes,
but knowing that you have a chance, I think to
run a lot of play action to spread things out

(01:42:33):
and to run hopefully out of shotgun into some lighter boxes,
get the running game going, but then also really make
teams pay for stacking the box and trying to shut
down the run game. And I think, if I'm Marcus Freeman, right,
let's play chess here, not checkers. You've got Price and
Love and you've got a rookie quarterback. Let's think. Let's

(01:42:57):
make the defense think we're gonna pound the right and
when they think we are gonna do that, what are
we gonna do. We're gonna throw it because we have
the advantage on the outside, because we have man demand coverage,
because the defenses have to commit to stop the run.
So if I'm Marcus Freeman and you are planning to
throw and be aggressive with CJ. Carr, you probably should
come out and say you're not, because that would again

(01:43:19):
lean on the run game and get teams focused on
those two stud backs, Price and Love.

Speaker 3 (01:43:25):
It's gonna be really interesting to see how the whole
game plays out. Because for the record, I don't think
being conservative is a horrible approach, you know, with your
first year, starting quarter, but making his first start.

Speaker 1 (01:43:37):
CJ.

Speaker 3 (01:43:38):
Carr on the road at Miami. I don't think being
conservative is a bad thing. I think that you got
to find the middle ground, right and just to see
how the game plays out. I agree with you at
the beginning Miami, like the place is gonna be on fire,
you know, Notre Dame's there, crowd's gonna be into it.
Miami is gonna be completely fired up. The d line

(01:43:59):
is just gonna be like you want to run the
ball or bring it on, baby. You're right, they're.

Speaker 1 (01:44:03):
Gonna be fired up for that.

Speaker 3 (01:44:05):
That would be a good time to catch them off
guard a bit, maybe a little play action pass, you know,
let's throw it a bit. But to see how the
rest of the game plays out, there's one thing. For Okay,
we got a couple of scripted throws on that first drive. Okay,
we had a little bit of success. Then what happens
Let's say Notre Dame has a lead. There any scenario

(01:44:26):
that's presented. Did they keep their foot on the gas
if they start slinging it around a little bit, or
do you revert back to all right, we're ahead by seven,
No need to put our first you know, our quarterback
making his first start in Harm's way. Let's get Jeremiah
Love into the mix here, you know, Like I really
want to see how the game ebbs and flows based

(01:44:49):
on time and score with CJ. Carr and what he's
asked to do by the play callers right there. What
are they gonna ask him to do throughout the game,
not just the first two drives, but throughout the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (01:45:01):
Yeah, I don't love the Miami defense. I think like
that's where in the weather might be a factor. Hard
Rock is an NFL stadium, not much college field to it.
It's not going to have that, you know, raucous atmosphere
where car is going to be running for his life
and the fans are gonna be screaming like it just
you're gonna have a lot of Notre Dame fans at
this game. And I was at the Notre Dame Penn

(01:45:22):
State game at hard Rock Stadium eight months ago, seven
months ago, and it was very fifty to fifty. And
I'm not saying it'll be fifty to fifty tonight because
I do think you're obviously in Miami. There should be
more Miami fans at this game, especially with Carson Beck
making his first start, a lot of excitement around the program,
but Notre Dame travels really well. And I think they're

(01:45:43):
going to have a boatload of butts in the seats
down there at hard Rock Stadium tonight, which I think
is gonna make CJ. Carr's you know, operation at the
line of scrimmage a little bit easier. This is not, though,
the sexiest Miami defense. They are not going to like Texas,
just line it up and smash it right down your
throat if you're going to try to run it on
them against their standard you know, their standard unit. I

(01:46:07):
think if Miami does over commit to the run, I
would just And maybe this is just me as like
an offensive mind guru quarterback guy speaking, but I don't
like to go into a game with a set plan.
I like to have my stuff that I would run
against this formation, against this type of defense, against this

(01:46:27):
type of box, against this type of you know, you know,
down and distance. But then I want to let the
defense dictate what my adjustments are. And I think it's
obvious that you start with love and price. I mean,
that's like no brainer stuff, right, Like you've got the
best back in college football, and his backup is probably
a top fifteen, top twenty back in college football. Like,
maybe let's get them involved first and let's see how

(01:46:50):
Miami plays it, and then we adjust from there, because
if they are going to stack the box, that's when
those three receivers should become very active. But I would
start the game if the first player of the game
is not a Jeremiah Love handoff, I think we have
a problem here. But from there, I think you're gonna
see some adjustments because I think Marcus Freeman's a really
good coach, and I think eventually you'll get those receivers

(01:47:12):
involved and hopefully car gets comfortable quickly.

Speaker 3 (01:47:15):
By the way, how does Miami not have a stadium
on their own campus?

Speaker 1 (01:47:22):
Great, Well, Coral Gables is weird. You ever been down there?
I haven't, No, I have not. It's a unique camp.
So I used to work down there when I worked
at FAU. We traveled there for baseball a lot. Even
their baseball stadium is like in the middle of Coral Gables.
It's like it's not a very big campus, so there's
not a lot of space, and I think that would
be the reason why.

Speaker 3 (01:47:41):
I'm sure they can carve enough space, like.

Speaker 1 (01:47:45):
This is it put it on the beach for crying
out loud, Right, we're.

Speaker 3 (01:47:48):
Not talking the badminton team over here, Like this is
the you with, this is the you with the what
the fifty eight game home winning streak?

Speaker 1 (01:47:55):
You used to play the titles? Yeah, it was a
different vibe, very different vibe.

Speaker 3 (01:47:59):
Please, different vibe, totally different than playing at a pro stadium.

Speaker 1 (01:48:03):
It's insane to me. It is a little strange.

Speaker 3 (01:48:06):
I'm sure there's a maybe you can think of it
off the top of your head. There's got to be
a major college program with an NFL stadium halfway nearby,
and it would be obnoxious to think of that powerhouse
playing in the NFL stadium every single week. There's got
to be something that quality the major.

Speaker 1 (01:48:25):
Well, that's the thing about college football that I love.
It's not big cities. That's why I love the Penn State.
Like when I remember, so I went to high school
in Northern Virginia and I remember, it's a lot. I know,
you're like with Penn State. It's really close to Penn State.
It's actually like three and a half hours away because
you just drive straight up from DC. But I remember
driving to Penn State for the first time to go

(01:48:47):
visit the campus and it's like cow, cow Cow, and
then forty thousand students on like this random patch of land,
Like it's not in the middle of anywhere where you
could populate. Like it's really far from Philly, really far.
It's like a three and a half hour drive from Philly.
It's like four hours from New York. So it's not
close to anything big. And that's what I love about

(01:49:09):
college football. Ann Arbor. I guess it was kind of
close to Detroit, but it's like an hour away. Columbus
is a little bit, you know, in a big city.
It's a state capital, but it's not a major city
with major NFL teams.

Speaker 3 (01:49:20):
So well you could it'd be like USC doesn't have
a great home atmosphere, but still it'd be like them
playing at so far it's just weird, but that's what
the Miami Hurricanes, the Miami Hurricanes still do. It blows
my mind. Like Baylor built a stadium not that long ago.

(01:49:40):
It was a big deal for them to build it
on campus, you know. I just it's amazing to me
because because again, if it's on campus and that old
Orange Bowl vibe. How you haven't figured that out to
put a stadium on campus is beyond me. That's just
stunning to me that Miami hasn't figured that out.

Speaker 1 (01:49:58):
By the way, I must have some kind of deal
with hard Rock Stadium and it's gotta be that. Well.

Speaker 3 (01:50:02):
I'm sure they do, but still it's like, how is
that the best thing for the University of Miami. No
idea unless outside of just strictly dollars and cents, There's
no way you can convince me that's It's ridiculous. It's crazy, Like,
imagine if Notre Dame instead of at home on campus
there you have to travel by bus this random location

(01:50:25):
off campus. They imagine if there was an NFL team
around there.

Speaker 1 (01:50:28):
It's just dumb.

Speaker 3 (01:50:28):
By the way, shout out Lee Corso final appearance on
game day and retiring legendary career, and I think this
is really cool as well. How about Fox Sports. They're
gonna show his pick at the end of the show.
They're gonna show it on their network, So it's not
gonna be the ESPN feed. It's gonna be the stadium

(01:50:49):
jumbo tron. That's what they're gonna show on Fox Sports.
Like Big Fox, the Fox TV. And you know, so
everybody inside like the the the They're gonna hear who
Corso picks?

Speaker 1 (01:51:03):
Is he going heel? Is he going Texas? I feel
like Texas. He's going Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (01:51:08):
That was the first headgear selection, right, What a full
circle moment to go Ohio State again?

Speaker 1 (01:51:15):
That would be wild.

Speaker 4 (01:51:16):
So.

Speaker 1 (01:51:16):
I have a story about Lee Corso. When I worked
for LASAL So, I worked for FAU then I worked
for LASAL in my college sports days. Right after I
graduated college, I had some sid work with those two programs.
When I worked at LASAL, I went to the Coastsida Convention,
which is the Sports Information Directors of Association of America
by Blah blah, bah blah convention. They have one every year.
It was at Marco Island back in twenty eleven, twenty eleven.

(01:51:39):
It was fourteen years ago, and Lee Corso was the
guest speaker and he stayed after his little you know,
meet and greet, and he shook every single hand in
that room, and he was nice enough to take a
picture with me. I posted the picture on my ex
account this morning at Jared Smith Betts fourteen years ago
and I was so excited to meet him. It was

(01:52:00):
like a hero moment for me and I posted thank
you for teaching me and countless others how to let
your passion and personality bleed through the screen. And that,
to me is what Lee embodies. We're talking about football here,
like we're talking about sports. This is fun. People take
it very seriously. They get very upset, very angry a
lot of times with the back and forth with the
media stuff. But this is fun. And I think that

(01:52:23):
is why I love and respect Lee so much is
because he taught me a very valuable lesson that you
a you are the vehicle that is trying to deliver
the football knowledge, the football entertainment to the people. But
it is sports. It is fun and it is supposed
to be entertaining. And Lee, I wish you the best,
my friend. You are an absolute legend.

Speaker 3 (01:52:42):
No doubt about that man. He's been a legend for
decades literally. And you talk about fitting in, I mean
you talk come up with a better fit for college
football than Lee Corso with the head gear and you know,
making the picks, and he embraced the fun of college football.
It's a lot like Dick Vitel with college basketball, Like

(01:53:05):
those guys both got it.

Speaker 1 (01:53:06):
They got up. Guys. It's the end of the error
for us, Brian, it is, absolutely it is.

Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
But man, can you imagine if they put I don't know,
Lee Corso in a studio show like inside a building,
or he'd be like, eh, you know, but out in
the open college game day, all the crazy fans behind him,
playing to the crowd.

Speaker 1 (01:53:27):
He was perfect.

Speaker 3 (01:53:28):
He was a perfect fit for college football, and college
football benefited from him for so long. And it really
is Listen, man, as I'll say this. That stood out
to me too, because I had a stroke a couple
of months ago. It was crazy, like out of nowhere,
May fifth, and I was sitting there and I'm not
trying to be dark at all, because Lee Corso suffered

(01:53:50):
a stroke, and I think what stood out to me
as like I couldn't speak very well and they were
giving me like the blood clot busting drug. There was
a blood clot in my brain and in that you know,
those minutes, however long it took, I couldn't speak very
well and I could think fine, could think fine, and
I thought of Lee Corso. I was like, not only

(01:54:12):
have the people around him been very loving and gracious
and patient. He's been really patient with himself. You think
about That's what really stood out to me when I
was having that stroke, is like, man, it's really I
know what I want to say. I just can't say
it right now, you know. And for Lee Corso to

(01:54:33):
have patience with himself and to really work as hard
as he has to work on a speech and to
be as healthy as possible, hats off to him because
I think that's often overlooked. We look at man Espn
really stood by him. He had patience with himself that
whole time too. That can't be overlooked.

Speaker 1 (01:54:51):
Totally agree, and in what we do in this space,
your word is everything. Like the ability to put words
together and make it sound like a melody, like a symphony,
like an orchestra, is what separates us from everyone else.
Do it like that is what makes you unique in
this space, is how you put those words together, your cadence,

(01:55:15):
your tone, your rhythm, how you're able to up go
up and down based off of what you're talking about.
And if you take that away, it's like taking an
athlete and chopping one of his legs off.

Speaker 3 (01:55:25):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:55:25):
It's a debilitating thing to take your words away from
a broadcaster. I can't imagine what was going through his
mind when he was, you know, going through that. And
same for you, Brian. I remember the night that I
think it was Scott Shapiro, are our executive who you know,
sent us that that you were, you know, going through
some stuff, and that was the first thing I thought.
I was like, man like I I it would be

(01:55:47):
it would be awful for me to go through that,
because to me, that is everything as a broadcaster, is
how you are able to put words together. So kudos
to you, Kudos to Lee, anyone else suffering. I had
a family member go through a stroke a few years ago.
It is not fun, like you have to learn how
to do everything over again. It's really really difficult. So weird,
you know, bittersweet vibes because we love Leave so much.

(01:56:09):
But I think what's best for him, obviously at this point,
is to move on and focus on his life, focus
on his health, focus on his family, and we wish
him the best because he is I don't think there'll
be ever again one of one to do what he
did for the college football media community.

Speaker 3 (01:56:22):
Absolutely, no, no doubt, very well said. That's Jared Smith

It is up on game and it is less than

(01:58:03):
nine minutes away. Let's keep it lax here on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, we've got some picks to make.

Speaker 1 (01:58:08):
Let's do it. Rapid fire.

Speaker 3 (01:58:14):
All right on me, Man Rich Ornberger with us via
telephone communication for rapid fire.

Speaker 1 (01:58:21):
What do you have for us?

Speaker 6 (01:58:21):
Rich?

Speaker 8 (01:58:22):
All right, I'll go quick here. Texas Road Dogs. They're
getting a point a half out of the Ohio State.
I think Texas's defense is smothering. I think Ohio State's
going to be overwhelmed sometimes trying to move the football.
I like them on the money line, but for the
purposes of rapid fire. I'll take the point and a
half on the road for the Longhorn. Moving on to

(01:58:44):
ten State hosting the VATA forty two and a half
point favorite. I think their twos could hang forty points
on Nevada, So I'll take the favorites defending their home
surf in a happy valley. Give me Penn State favored
by forty two and a half. That is a ridiculous number.
A less ridiculous number. Bama favored by fourteen against Florida State.

(01:59:06):
I like what you said about their running back, Richard Young.
I think they're gonna run wild on Florida State defense.
Give me Bama covering the fourteen points against that best you.

Speaker 1 (01:59:17):
I love it. Two of the three are the same.
I'm on Texas as well. Plus one and a half
at Ohio State. Of course, Buckuy's new starting quarterback arch Man.
He's got a little more experience Ohio State, replacing both
of the coordinators. I think Texas does get some cat
and bow revenge at the shoot today, and how can
I not lay it with Penn State. Rich James Franklin

(01:59:38):
knows the number. You don't think he does. They've had
four forty plus point covers in the last four games
again four to oh eight ts whin the spread is
thirty seven and a half or higher. For James Franklin
at Penn State. Remember when they beat Ken State fifty
six oher last year they were driving late to get
the score. To cover the spread. The Boosters had to
pay Jim Knowles's salary. I think Franklin gets one back

(02:00:01):
for the Boosters today. Fenn State with the big cover
over Nevada. At Georgia laying thirty eight and a half
against Marshall Thundering Herd lost their head coach and like
their entire team. Charles huff Now at Southern Myths took
like the whole team with them. And how about this
FBS versus FBS matchups sixteen and oh straight up fifteen
and one against the spread when the spread is thirty
seven and a half points are higher in the opening game.

(02:00:23):
I think Georgia gets a big win emphatically and covers
the spread against Marshall.

Speaker 3 (02:00:27):
I got some unders and underdogs for you.

Speaker 1 (02:00:29):
How about that?

Speaker 3 (02:00:30):
Huh? I'm going with Hookum gimme him plus point and
a half reasons you guys mentioned you know.

Speaker 1 (02:00:37):
I've mentioned more, but I don't have time you guys
covering it through. I'm gonna go Rich. You mentioned this
as well. I like it too.

Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
Jeremiah Smith under seventy eight and a half receiving yards.
I'm a bit worried able keeping the state of Ohio.
Remember when Jacoby Brissett was with the Browns.

Speaker 1 (02:00:54):
PJ.

Speaker 3 (02:00:54):
Walker is like, you gotta advise to me. He's like,
throw it to Marie Cooper. Say anything else, No, just
throw it to Marie Cooper. US about that, And I've
got Miami hosted Notre Dame under fifty and a half
