Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening Fox Sports. I'll tell you what. Sunday morning
is always a treat to get up early. Yeah, you
have a short night, but you're anxious because there's always
so much sporting news and information, injury updates, all of that.
Whatever the sport is, whatever the season, right, we roll
it around and right as you get tired of breaking down,

(00:21):
I don't know the Lakers injuries for the n time
the season ends and we start drifting into baseball full
full tilt. Today we celebrate the return of a full
slate of NFL games out here on the West Coast.
That means ten am kickoffs, which means early early tailgating
and a lot of headaches, uh and rough nights. I'm

(00:42):
not able to go and do that exciting thing that
you want me to do in the evening, and that'll
have to wait for some time during the week. Every
week we're gonna be here two hours fast information college
whip around really quick, the big notes out of Saturday's games,
quick recap of third day's game, and then we get
into the predictions, the prognostication, and the breakdowns of every

(01:06):
glorious game on the NFL slate. Mike Carmenal along with
Bucky Brooks, my guy joins in NFL Network, Fox Sports
Digital and of course our teammate here Fox Sports Radio.
Welcome in, Bucky, Hey, thanks for having man. This would
be a lot of fun. Just so fast, right, We're
gonna be there's gonna be rapid fire. Got a couple

(01:26):
of minutes on each game. Uh, some will get short shrift.
Let's call it what it is, especially as we get
a little deeper into the season. But as we jump
off their storylines for days, all the rookie quarterbacks, everybody's
excited to see. But let's go back to the college
football slate that was yesterday, and we we saw Texas

(01:46):
get thumped. We saw Ohio State, who flirted with danger
against Minnesota and their opener they get taken down by
the Oregon Ducks. And then you and I were watching
the highlights of jaz Exonville State taken down Florida State
on a final play. Where As, as a former defensive back,

(02:08):
I just watched you shake your head as the place
started to develop. Yeah, I mean like for fourth and ten,
I mean no time on the clock and they're in
just a regular zone, not a prevn defense, nothing else where.
He can just really rare, I can huck it and
throw it over the top of the defense. Those things
should never, ever, ever, ever ever happen, should I sit,

(02:28):
They should never happen in this situation. So it's a
good word, you know, just just keep the ball in front.
All you have to do is get them down. And
then the fact that they just couldn't get them down,
it couldn't tackle them. Just man, that's poor play. There's
poor play, and I know the coaches are absolutely upset.
Mike Norvell falls to three and eight in his career
at Florida State. And look between that and the calls

(02:49):
for Clay Hilton's head here in California, it was a
pretty wild saturday in college football. Yeah, absolutely wild. Um,
you think about Clay Hill and then usc us See
had been pumped up. Um, there's a lot of excitement
coming after their win against San Jose State. Uh toy'd
be sitting as they state thirty seven. So now they
have a match up a conference game against Stanford. Stanford

(03:09):
had lost the previous uh time they stepped out against
Kansas State and its average kind of comes and has
their way running the ball and and Tanner McKee steps in,
they name him the starter. He plays well. Um, this
is a kid uh locally from l A. Played at
Corona Centennial and man, he looked like the game was
not too big for him. That was a huge win

(03:30):
for Stanford because it's been a while sin Stanford had
a big win, big win, disappointing loss for SC and
it started the rumor mill again, what is going to
happen to Clayhold And at the end of the year
it seems like he's the We had a lot of
video of that cat in the game that everybody was
trying to catch as it was falling. Uh nine lives
as it were, and that's Clay Hilton as well. At USC.

(03:50):
We also had a kicker in that game ejected for
targeting on the opening kickoff, which was interesting odd to
say the least. I'm still curious about the the letter
of the law versus spirit of the law when it
comes to targeting, and we watched that over the first
couple of weeks of this college season. You do high
school coaching, I mean, when you when you're trying to

(04:11):
coach tackling, it's obviously changed, right the rules these I
mean every we try to enforce. Yeah, everything is, everything
is changing. What you're trying to get you has to
do is take their head out of the mix. Um.
A lot of that requires you to rug me tackle,
so sometimes your hit is behind the runner a little bit.
It requires just more teaching and more repetition, and you
have to rep it all the time, and not even

(04:33):
necessarily in season, out of season, being able to get
those guys to tackle and tackle on dummies and do
simulation things to get them used to it, because you're
really trying to train them. So when their habits, their
natural habits on the field um pop up. They're doing
the right thing. And so it's unfortunate that a kick
who gets the targeting on the opening gig, but you
know they're trying to legislate those kind of hit us

(04:54):
out the game. Well, just just continue because we've had
in a few games where this has really been a
big deciding point, right and do you pick it up
or you're not? You know, and and big long reviews
you know as you're coaching it. Well, like when you
go to the dummies, is that you've got film that
you're able to watch to see the strike zone or
you're put in chalk on the front of the helmet's like,

(05:14):
see that's off your face, masks. Man, Come on, I mean,
I mean you're trying to do a bunch of different
things to try and get them used to do it.
And you may start with them on their knees and
they're uh wrap tackling and crocody we call the crocodile rolling,
uh the death roll, roll them to the ground. You
do the same thing with with bags and all of

(05:34):
this other stuff. And so the trick is you have
to be able to do it without excessive contact for
your players, and so a lot of that require simulation.
We've seen guys roll out what they call the donuts,
the big circle bags that you can kind of roll across,
roll across the field and they can go tackle. But
it requires a lot and it's a lot of training,
and so you just have to continue to work and
continued to drill it. Yeah. Just the fact that even

(05:56):
in the pros, right, that's what we see the first
couple of weeks of the season, we'll see today. Oh yeah,
a lot a lot of bad tackling earlier in the year.
That's just kind of part for the course. When it
comes to this guys trying to make the big hit
instead of wrapping up all of those things. Because you
don't do it now you don't, you don't don't get
to do it anymore. You don't. You don't have an
opportunity to tackle enough. And so that is one of
the things that you must be able to do. You

(06:18):
must be able to find a way to get guests
to the ground consistently because it plays a huge role
in how you win games. Start talking about yak. We'll
use the term yak a lot over the course of
the next seven team glorious weeks of this regular season.
Every week, we're gonna go through each and every game.
Congratulations your tar Heels fifty nine. I mean, just win, baby,

(06:42):
like I need them to show up and play a
little bit of the week before. But we're on to
the next But you take the victory and you and
you move on, succeed and proceed. Yeah, Virginia, all learning
and all roads leading ahead. So why don't without further ado,
why don't we uh talk about Thursday football for a minute?
Here We've got the return of Dak Prescott. The offensive line,

(07:05):
even though they missed Zack Martin did a good job.
The game plan, get the ball out, quickly, run him
out of the shotgun, want too out and try to
make plays. A couple of injuries in the secondary for Tampa,
a couple that will be longer term injuries, so that
that's a little thing to watch as it flows. But
you see Cooper, you see Ceedee Lamb the run game.

(07:26):
I don't. I just don't think it was game planned
for there to be a huge role for for Zeke
slash Tony Pollard there against you know, Tampa Bay Front.
And then obviously the game starts to flow and if
you're having success, you don't go away. And as soon
as that Dak quits himself getting out to the edge
like that was the big test. Everybody's waiting to see you, right,
he move laterally and is he willing to push forward?

(07:50):
And as soon as that was done, that was it? Right,
You knew that the game had changed. Yeah, the game
certainly had changed. And part of the reason, um, you
wanted to see how this game was going to play.
I one, you want to see if Dak was back.
But then I give Kellen Moore a lot of credit
and this is something that the New England patients are
done for a long time. Rather than try and knock
your head against someone's strength, they completely flipped the script.

(08:12):
So rather than run against and Dominan Sue and Vita
Villa and Jason Pierre Paul and Shake Barrett, the Dallas
Cowboys simply said, you know what, We're not even going
to try and put ourselves in a bunch of long
yarder situations where then they can heat the pass rush
against Prescott. Let's throw it all over the yard. And
then as they started to see bodies falling like little
flies hitting the windshield, they started throwing outside and attacked

(08:36):
all those dbs. And the one thing that the Cowboys
do have and I wouldn't advocate them throwing the ball
fifty eight times like they did. But man, they're three
on the outside of Mary Cooper, Seeding, Lamb and Michael
are as good as any three in football. It is
an advantageous because it's hard to find people that can
cover on the outside. Yeah waiting, Uh see exactly how
long Gallop is gonna be sideline looks like it's a month. Uh,

(08:59):
they're a outs. He was a big target for them
early in the game, like he was Dax go to
to get things started, and then, as you said, the
attrition in the defensive backfields, like all right, CD's got
this open now, and now you're picking your poison and
trying to flush through and again Zack Martin will come back.
Lyle Collins now fighting this suspension, which is going to

(09:21):
be a whole that's a whole other mess. But with
all the lawyers in the room, I can't believe there's
not something in the details regarding mistest because they're trying
to argue mistest means you can only find me, you
can't suspend me, which would be the dumbest, right, I mean,
let's let's stipulate to this, right, why would you ever
take a test? Then if all they could do is

(09:42):
find you, like if if there's even a hint that
you might be yeah something. Yeah, It's interesting because I
think doing um, the modification of the c b A,
they kind of tweaked some of the if we're talking
about recreational drug, we're talking about Mary want to they
kind of tweak some of those things, and so the

(10:02):
mistest are very punitive if that's what it is that
we're ultimately talking about. But Leo Collins has to be
on the SPEs and queues. He has to take care
of business. And if they're testing, he has to show
him take the test like that is rule number one.
And so whether you talk about finds or suspensions and
those things, a lot of it can't absolve him from
the accountability and responsibility that he has to be available

(10:24):
and to take the testing when the test are there.
He made the big point right there. Availability. We'll get
into some of the injury notes. Dan Buyers here on
the update desk is well news information man. Our our
partner Bucky and I have worked with Dan for years. Uh,
and he's gonna be thorough. He's scouring the internet right now.
I think his refresh rate on his Twitter feed is

(10:46):
at about nine point seven per minute. Without further ado,
let's get one game in as we get this party
starting here on a Sunday. All right, Now, here's a
game that I think everybody's got some great interest in.
Buffalo six and a half point favorites the total at

(11:07):
Pittsburgh last year. A lot made about Ben Roethlisberger's arm.
I'm of the opinion that a lot of it was
going back to what we saw and just talked about
with Dallas was we know we don't have the line
that we've had in the past. We've got guys with
speed on the outside that can win their individual matchups,
and then we're gonna play for yat And they knew
they didn't have the runner. No disrespect to James Conner,

(11:28):
that's not the guy that's set. You know all everybody
on fire. There's a different guy two and a half
years later, right, No, that's that is absolutely the case.
And I think you bring up a good point when
it comes to the Steelers, Naja Harris to me, is
the most important player that they have on their team
because if Naja Harris can give them that level Bill
Levian Baill type impact, it eases the game for Ben

(11:49):
Roethlisberger and it actually, in my estimation, gives this still
is a great opportunity to get a big win on
the road. I'm looking at that squad and they're they're
a sneaky team, right. There will be time everybody's kind
of dismissing them. The defense we know is always strong
and rounds into place, always among the sack leaders. And Tomlin,
let's call it what it is, he gets you towards
the finish line, You're never gonna feel like things are

(12:11):
going off the rails, even if they lose too straight.
It's you know, every other city there there's a panic
button that gets pressed. In Pittsburgh, you know they'll find
their way back to the path. Now with Ben Roethlisberger
and that passing game, and it goes back to that
extension of the run game, right, But with Naji Harris,
now you've got a bulldozer. Now you've got a guy
that can shorten games, right, and a guy that can

(12:33):
grind up front. He can grind, he can grind it
out like legitimately, like seriously, when I talk about the
Levyan Bell comparison, he's as close to Levyan Bell as
we've seen in a long time in terms of being
a big back that can run the ball inside the tactles,
but get out in space and run routes like a
wide receiver. He can do that. The other thing to
watch new offensive coordinator Matt Canada comes from the college game.

(12:56):
He was with the still As a year ago, but
he really made his hey in the killegiate rinks Wisconsin, Maryland, Pittsburgh.
When you watch some of the things that the stealers
are doing you'll see a lot of motions, a lot
of preestap motion, a lot of fly motion, a lot
of jet sweep since action. Off of that, he is
going to try and dazzled you with eye candy to

(13:16):
catch you for a big flat see if Buffalo can
win up front, la I said that right, Good job
by me at Oliver and company trying to disrupt that reconfigured,
reconstituted Pittsburgh offensive line. On the offensive side, Stefon Diggs
missed some time during training camp, Emmanuel Sanders has a
foot injury coming in, Dawson Knox just because it's a

(13:38):
good name tight end, and then Zach Masson Devin Singletary
trying to add balance. But it really comes down to
Josh Allen. Last year we saw the massive increase in
efficiency after working the off season with Jordan Palmer weekly rate,
hourly rate for Jordan Palmer through the roof. Now after that,
availability has got to be limited. But for for Josh

(13:59):
Allen in the follow up, what are you expecting to
hear from this offense? You know, I don't know, because
there's such a massive jump. We have to see if
which Josh Allen is the real Josh Allen is the
Josh Allen the first two years that the average fewer
than two past yards per game, or the Josh Allen
that we saw last year played at m VP level.
The thing that worries me about Buffalo their inability to
consistently run the football outside of number seventeen Josh Allen.

(14:21):
Mak him play. Can someone else emerge to give them
some simbilance of balance so they can play the game
the right way. They do not want to put too
much on Josh Allen. It's just so hard to play
when your quarterback has to do everything. I'm looking for
Zach Boss to take over that that role would be
a little bit of a bulldozer himself, to kind of

(14:41):
flip the script there, and just think about it. If
Levan Bell had listened to me on the radio, Naji
Harris would be literally replacing him this year. He would
have gotten three more years out of his deals there
in Pittsburgh. I moving on, Yeah, I mean I think
there's something to be said for that. We can't go
back and he can't get back their buck, but it
seems like it certainly would have been a lot easier

(15:03):
for him to cash you in that fourteen million, all
the franchise tag and continue to make big money as
opposed to doing what he did the last two or
three years. All right, Pittsburgh getting six and a half,
pick it straight up and against the spread. I'm gonna
take Pittsburgh both angles. I think Pittsburgh actually wins this game.
So I am going with the stillers on this. Roethlisberger
and that defense is too good. Plus they got JJ

(15:25):
I mean t J. Watt sign. There you go. Yeah,
he had the direct deposit, came in his phone and
came across his phone. So he's very excited about the
hundred and twelve meeting, all the extension that he signed.
What's funny, we'll get into him and a couple of
the other contracts because I heard some stuff that kind
of bothered me, and I want I want people to
be be set right on this. I'm gonna take Pittsburgh
to beat the spread. So it's it's gonna be closer

(15:45):
than that six and a half, but I'll take a
Tyler Bass field goal at home to get it done.
For the wind column of the Bills coming up back
to we get into the San Francisco forty Niners and
their game today, a news report from Adam Schefter today.
It really doesn't mean a whole lot at this point
except prove it on the field. Bucky Brooks with me
on Mike Carmen. This is Fox Sports Sunday. Let's go

(16:08):
welcome back in. It's a Fox Sports, Fox Football Sunday. Here,
Fox Sports Radio, Mike Harmon alongside five year NFL VET
our teammate here at Fox Sports Radio joining me now
on Sunday mornings. It's Bucky Brooks at Bucky Brooks where
you find them on Twitter writing Fox Sports Digital, so

(16:28):
Fox Sports dot com and you can follow them on
Twitter and get the latest analysis. Bucky's already looking at
diagrams and and trying to figure out the breakdowns. Yeah,
this would be fun weekend. I think the first NFL
weekend is so crazy because you really don't know what
you're going to see. Because if you're basing your picks
and predictions off of one offseason activity to what you

(16:52):
saw in the preseason, you have no idea because a
lot of people didn't play their starters during the preseason,
and a lot of people take different philosophy is on
how they utilize preseason games, and so this weekend has
I think the most volatile nature of any when it
comes to trying to predict because you just don't know. Well.
The third part we were just talking about it off

(17:13):
air a little bit, is trying to use historical data.
When coachings like you mentioned Matt Kenna that comes in
for Pittsburgh, it's gonna be a different philosophy, different background,
different usage of some of these players. He's gonna see,
all right, we might have something here with Claypool that
wasn't in the system a year ago that maybe we
can find another wrinkle, and now we have a running
back back, so it opens up a lot of other

(17:35):
options for us a head coaches, we get rid of
a quarter of them every year, So telling me, hey,
they're one in five against the spread or straight up
against this team over the last fifteen years or you know,
it does nothing like it's it's a great anecdote, but
it doesn't inform what we're doing here. To your point
about the preseason usage, that the amount of player turnover,

(17:58):
and then with injury updates as wich as we get them,
how much do you believe anything that that gets put
out there unless the guys literally just had surgery and
they had to confirm that. Yeah, I think a lot
of it has to be on gut gut feel about
the opponents. Who do you trust more from a historical perspective,
if you do have a hit coach, or for instance,

(18:18):
like a guy like Andy Reid, who typically his teams
come out the gate pretty hot, not only because they're talented,
but because of the way he approaches the preseason and
training camp. If you look at Andy Reid after a
bye week and those things, like some guys just know
how to get their team ready to go, there are
other coaches that are typically slow starters. It's funny the
Patriots tend to use the month of September as an

(18:40):
extension of the preseason, trying to figure out who they
are and what they are, where they're gonna get to
and those things. And so you have a few different
agendas that are working. But this week, with the matches
that we have, well there's a lot of great matchups.
I was wondering why you need to schedule all the
great We were talking about this a little bit with
college football, you and I earlier of Alright, Week one,

(19:01):
everybody's just excited it's back. So you don't have to,
you know, push the schedule necessarily the same way. I'm
not going to complain. Look, I celebrate all two seventy
two of them. I've always said to fifty six. Now
I get to add sixty more. And we had a
dandy on Thursday night. If you didn't like that football game,
go go watch the latest judging dancing and you know,

(19:26):
finger snapping or whatever you need to do, or the
Housewives of whatever, because that was a game. I mean,
I kind of like watching the house I'm not saying,
I'm not dismissing it, but opposite a football game unless
you're going to do a two screen experience or four
screen whatever you need to do. I know, I let's
be honest. When you look at it ratings and stuff.

(19:46):
Football is always king first NFL, then college football. If
you put a game on, people are going to tune
in because the interests is so high on that. The
Thursday night game was a great one. One to brand name, well,
brand name franchise and a brand name quarterback in Tom Brady.
So America's team taking on Tom Brady, you're going to
get all odds on it. And then many of us
went in thinking, uh, the Buccaneers just gonna wipe the Cowboys,

(20:11):
and the long behold. A really competitive game broke out,
one that was far more um competitive than many of
us imagine. And then you get down in the fourth
quarter late and the fourth quarter you get to see
the heartbreaker a Tom Brady do what he does um
And it's funny because I tweeted this, but it's the
same feeling. What did you feel like when Dallas gave
the wall back to Tom Brady with the minute and

(20:33):
some chains left. I was on air, Bucky, and I
like that that that ain't gonna end. Well, it's just
not because they've been moving the ball all night. And
like some of the narratives that came out of the
game though, it's like did you did you all watch
like the zero line thing, It's like after the one miss,
they gotta turnover and scored immediately thereafter. It's like, but

(20:53):
that's just but the fact that they got the ball
back off the fore net and then scored a touchdown,
like people forget It's like, no, it's it's on the
kid cards. Like the biggest play, the biggest play from
the Cowboys vantage point was when they ran the option.
They pitched into Zeke and Blake dar and missed his block,
and then Zeke couldn't fight. He couldn't fight to get
in the end zone, and so they had to set
up for three instead of seven. Those other little things

(21:15):
that made a difference in that game. But then did
you see the bet that the guy lost on Zeke? Oh, no,
five grand to score a touchdown, he would have doubled
his money. Oh, he's gonna find Blake. Huh yeah, I
got I gotta feel Blake Darwin got a stronger or
an email or or maybe you still go back to uh, hey,
we we sent him something via the wire, and you know,

(21:38):
instead of wiring money, you owe me seventy for that.
But but that's that hurts the name of all tight
ends when it comes to blocking, right because the trend
right now being the receivers that tight ends have become.
There's a little bit of a knock saying this guy
can't block anymore, Blake Darwin. It did Nothing's question about it,

(22:00):
all right, We'll continue with the games in a moment.
Let's start it over to Dan Buyer over in the
studio to give us all the news updates and what's Hey,
Mike Hey, Bucky Yes Week one on the horizon, and
some big names we are tracking in advance of kickoff.
Should note Brown's Chiefs today a late window kickoff Eastern time,
so you're gonna have to wait a while to find

(22:22):
out if Odell Beckham Jr. Will take the field. Reports
say he is trending towards playing, but still considered a
game time decision for today's game in Kansas City. Giants
and Broncos also in that late four Eastern time window.
Giants running back Sae Kwon Barkley expected to play, but
will be on a snap count. Brown's linebacker Broncos linebacker
Bradley Chubb that is his a game time decision with

(22:44):
an ankle injury. One o'clock Eastern time. Bolts are in
d C to take on Washington. Austin Ekeler should be
a go for l A. Bills wide receiver Emanuel Sanders
should play against Pittsburg, scenes could be shorthanded in the secondary.
Marsh On Lattimore, their cornerback, question able to play against
Green Bay because of a knee issue. Some Lake College
football last night, and while the early games were great

(23:07):
for the Pack twelve, the late games not so much.
B Yu took down number twenty one Utah seventeen in
Pro Bowl, while Stanford up ended fourteen thr USC forty
two to eight. Dodgers beat the Padres five four, two
and a half back of the Giants in the NL West.
And while we are so focused on football today, guys,
there could be history made in Flushing Meadows. That's because

(23:30):
Novak Djokovic goes for the Grand Slam for one in
the US Open final against Danil Medvedev at four o'clock
Eastern time. Back to you, fellas nicely done at Dan
Buyer on Fox, where you find him on Twitter, find
me over at Swollen Dome at Bucky Brooks and yeah,
we celebrate greatness no matter the playing surface, and what
he's doing right now is amazing. In the women's side

(23:53):
was a whole other, you know, historic situation. So I
mean you got you got a healthy sport, right whatever.
Some of the headlines have been off the court and
fears of you know, in mental health becoming a big
talking point, Naomi Osaka. You still have a lot of
other competitors that are that are rising up, which is
a fantastic thing for the sport. All right, let's get

(24:15):
back into the games. And one that I'm curious on
your thoughts of a team short term and long. Alright,
forty Niners, said Lions. All right, we got the forty
Niners coming into this game. Depending on when you got
in seven a half or nine is the line at Detroit,
forty five and a half is your over Under Jimmy

(24:36):
Garoppolo and company, all of those weapons from two years
ago start the season. We'll see if if they can
avoid the mess that was last year when it looked
like the Baltimore Ravens running back room, where I was like, wait,
another guy got hurt. That can't be possible. And you
had Debo go down, you had most are go down.
Kiddle goes down all of your weapons and then defensively

(24:57):
one guy after another. So now Jimmy g leads it team.
And there was a reporter a report earlier this morning
from Adam Schefter saying that when the forty Niners had
traded up to number three, the idea was to block
New England from grabbing mac Jones, and instead they zagged
and took tray Lance. Yeah, this is a very interesting one.
It's interesting because man, I love what the Niners have

(25:18):
the potential to do in the running game. Uh, the
people that they've assembled to personnel Diebo, Samuel Brandon and
you'r they're basically wingbacks from yesteryear sermon. Yeah, half wide
receivers have running back trade sermon for he mostly that
can run inside. You've got George Kitto, Kyle you check
corversatile hybrid players. But now we saw in the preseason
finale whether the util has two quarterbacks Jimmy g and

(25:41):
Trey Lance, and they kind of mixed and match put
him in and did different things with both guys in
the game. I'm just wondering, what does Kyle Shanahan have
up his sleeve to unveil on the rest of the league.
So they have to prepare for it. This would be
an interesting one. But I love the Niners offense against
the Lions defense. I think they can overwhelm them. Yeah,
as we we've talked about a budge of the Jimmy garoppolo.

(26:03):
You and I you know, he wins may not be
sexy all the time. The tea interception ratios are two
two plus two to one. So he gets it done.
He's efficient there, but he can't stay on the field.
He has not been He's been unable to stay on
the field twenty two and eight as a starter though,
and then when you look at Calcianahan's record with other quarterbacks,
for whatever reason, it doesn't work. So we can knock

(26:25):
Jimmy g for a lot of things, but the one
thing that he has been able to do with the Niners,
he gets them to the winner circle. On the Detroit side,
Jared Goff comes in. We know Anthony Lynn likes to
establish the run, so DeAndre Swift Jamal Williams will see
that her here their numbers called a lot and it
was one of the things that Here during his tenure
as head coach with the Chargers, had people throwing things

(26:47):
against walls off the time because of the predictability. Now
you've got Campbell, You've got a great coaching staff assembled there.
When you look at what Detroit did this offseason, and
I'm a bigger believer. I'm not saying Jared Goff is
a world beater, but I don't think he is nearly
as bad as the national picture would paint. You got T. J. Howkinson,
and you you revamped your entire wide receiving corps, so

(27:08):
it's it's gonna be a work in progress, but I
wouldn't bury them out right there. This is a bad
matchup to start off with. To your point, yeah, it's
a it's a bad matchup, but I wouldn't bury them.
I would say a couple of things about a few
things about the Detroit Lions. One, Dan Campbell as a
hey coach, will be an interesting watch. Would be interesting
to watch him. Uh, it's good but good for us,
But you can't come out and conduct himself during the game. Uh.

(27:29):
They also have the most former NFL players on a
coaching staff of any You want to see how that
plays out. Are they able to take those experiences from
the field and pass on those nuggets to their team?
That is something to watch. And then the Jerry Golf factor.
Jared Goff has been dismissed and kind of thrown away
like he was trashed based on his performance with the
l A. Rams. But remember the l A Rams went

(27:50):
to the Super Bowl with Jerred Golf at quarterback, and
so maybe they feel like they upgraded when they got
Matthew Stafford. But I'm saying this is a number one
overall pick a guy who's played at a Pro Bowl
level before he has led his team to a Super Bowl.
I wouldn't completely dismiss the Lions um as a team
that has no chance, just because I do believe this.
Someone is in the locker room and Jerry Golf is

(28:10):
one of those. So for this game, forty Niners to win,
do they cover that number? I think the forty Niners win.
And what's the number again, anywhere from seven and a
half to nine, but it's under that, but it's under
give that next, I give them to win, but I'm
gonna go with the Lions to cover the take the
forty Niners to win, and to cover this one. I
do think Detroit's gonna be a thorn in the side

(28:32):
of teams though. As for all those reasons, and look
for all our friends that have played in the league.
I really hope that this works with the ex players
as position coaches, coordinators and that kind of thing, because
it's gonna open up opportunities to keep teaching the game, right,
guys that have been in it. All right, next game,
all open, Patriots, All right, Miami on the road, three

(28:58):
point underdogs, tune England. Mac Jones forty three and a
half is your total. Hairson not expecting fireworks from to
Uh and mac Jones in this one, but New England
with a great offensive line. Miami, we talked all the
time about the All fifty three and where they are
and what they've built, because Brian Flores has built a program, right,
We talked about what he was hired and they gave

(29:19):
him the contract and the way it was all worded
in the press conference was you're gonna have time to build,
and they built. And last year was kind of an
odd year as to what was coming off the hip injury.
You have an off season that didn't make any sense.
You try to cobble things together. So the herky jerky
motion that everybody now piles onto about, it's like they

(29:39):
were in no man's land, right are we Because we're
winning games? Right, our defense good enough to win games,
but we want the kid to get some time, So like,
what do we do? And Brian Fitzpatrick never turned into
the pumpkin that he had in year's best right, he
was still playing well. He had a couple of rough games,
but overall he played really well, which got him the
job up in Washington. We'll get to them later. The

(30:01):
amount of speculation about too as the guys Captaincy, all
of those things just amazing. It is amazing. It's also
nauseating when you think about just the level of conjecture
that we have had dealing with two A talking about
lad This is a game that's interested though, because Alabama
evidently is now the U the new QB youth they

(30:22):
produced quarterback. They have three quarterbacks that will start with
Mac Jones to a ton about Lola and then Jalen
Hurts to Ah is interesting because we haven't seen enough
right and so people have taken them to task. But
then when you look at him, he played winning football
for the Dolphins. Part of the reason why they went
to him more so than Fitzpatrick is because you're waiting

(30:42):
for the other shoot to drop whenever fits he plays.
You're waiting for that meltdown game that is a four
or five interception game that costs you. And when you're
trying to play winning football, the number one thing you
have to eliminate are the turnovers, and so to elimited
the turnovers, but he didn't necessarily have the aggression that
some wanted in terms of pushing the it down the
field at the end of the day, it's about what

(31:03):
do the Dolphins need to do to win and if
Tua can deliver in the passing game aspect, the Miami
Dolphins are talented enough to be a playoff team. And
beyond which is Miles Gaskin and company in the run
game working to establish that. He acquitted himself quite nicely
last year. They've got uh Ahmed and others there there,
it's the deep crew, their receiver. You're you're looking at

(31:26):
Jalen Waddle coming in, so the curiosity right as repair
these guys. He'll be back eventually. He's finishing his suspension
this week and then you never know how long you
got him for either, No, you don't, but and justn't
talking about two in the upgrades. We're talking about Will
Fuller and Jalen Waddle and ols guys Mike gisicky Um

(31:48):
slipping my mind, DeVante Park, you know. And and that
worked though because DeVante sometimes slips away. He slips away.
But but that is what they have. And I think
what you're going to see new office recordinat or co
offensive coordinat Eric Studensville towards Gussie quick rhythm passing game
ball is going to get out of his hands quickly.
He just has to be a great decision maker. Mac Jones.
On the other side, you've got Damian Harris, you got

(32:08):
James White, the ageless James White. Out of the backfield.
You you paid a lot of money for tight ends.
So the quarterbacks, young quarterbacks, best friends, right, swing the
ball out of the backfield and get the ball to
the tight end. Johnny Smith. I think people will realize
how good he is because Derrick Henry got all the
shine in Tennessee and Hunter Henry another guy that because
of the injuries, you have no idea wide receivers. Jacoby Myers,

(32:32):
there's your fantasy note for the day. Take a look
at him. I think it's heart account will be solid.
I don't know why they paid Nelson Aghil or what
they did, but it's not my money. So Mac Jones,
the expectation like a lot again, A lot of noise, right,
I don't think we don't have time to go into
the camp, not an interview with his dad. A lot
of noise, and so some of the noise has been

(32:53):
because there's such a fervor forward New Patriots fans to
have Tom Brady two point out. So I want all
the pages. Insteady're listening, I want them to close their eyes.
I want them to go back to the early two
thousands to two thousand's when you had Antoine Smith and
the late David Patton and David Givons and Troy Brown
on the outside UH defense with him Aginnis and Tebruski,

(33:14):
those guys. This is how the Patriots will have to
play the old school way, where if they win, they
win a lot of one score games. Seven team. Mac
Jones is a distributor, pass first point guard. I mean,
just to get it out and let the playmakers do
the work and not mess it up. Tom Brady that

(33:34):
first year, first full season starter, he only averaged around
a hundred and eighty seven pass yards per game. I
think mac Jones is going to be around that neighborhood
because they're gonna run and play defense. It's winning formula.
Last year, even with all the defections, they were still
seven in the NFL. As bad as as bad as
we talked about the Patriots, they were still seven and
nine and in two games they had a chance to win.
Cam New was going to four score against the Buffalo Bills.

(33:56):
They fumbled away. There was another game against Seattle. He did,
You're talking about a team that wasn't that close, and
they weren't very good. They are leaps and bounds better
from a personnel standpoint this year than they were least,
and a good offensive line for Jones to work behind.
All Right, New England minus three with Miami coming to town,

(34:17):
I'm gonna go into Patriots. Don't ask me why I'm
believing the Patriots. Maybe because Bill Belichick, and maybe it's
the history. However, normally the MIGHTI Dolphins always playing well,
But give me the Patriots to not only win, but
also to take care of I'm gonna stay with you.
They're just one more play. I am really curious to
watch too. That's where my eyes will gravitate. Mac Jones
is gonna have his time to be the guy. Uh.

(34:39):
This Fox Football Sunday, Mike Harmen alongside Bucky Brooks breaking
down each and every game. We got a little catch
up to do. Why because well it's Week one and
we got a lot to say about these teams in speculation,
uh and conjectures. So uh, stay with us. We've got
plenty more games to go coming up next. We talked
about a team you're really familiar with it working this
offseason in they come in with a lot of questions

(35:01):
about their head coach and he's only in his first year.

Back to the game Jaguars and Texans, this is one

(36:07):
that you can get yourself on the hot seat really
fast here Bucky Jaguars three point road favorites against a
Houston Texas team that, let's face it, we have no
idea what we're gonna see today. Forty five and a
half we know to Rod Taylor has had the most
interesting journey of any quarterback in the NFL over the
last three plus years, from Cleveland and his time in

(36:27):
Los Angeles which ended with a puncture wound to this
whole Deshaun Wattson thing, and we again, we don't have
the time to like again, it's speculation as many as
six players last draft picks is what the asking crisis
and there's no end in sight. So anybody that's coming
with that kind of offer the g M ain't gonna
be in his seat very long. I don't. I don't suspect.

(36:49):
But when we look at the Jaguars, it's been one
weird headline after another, Like to where if I were
to ranked them, the Tebow arrival there and exit would
rank like ninth. It is really it was a non
factor other than the miss blocks in that preseason game.
Otherwise he was a non issue. Trevor Lawrence for the
most part, got to work in anonymity, right, Just not

(37:10):
often you get a number one pick that just gets
to go work. Why because we were worried about Chicago
and San Francisco and what was going on in New England.
I just worried about the offensive line holding up. And
I guess it's a solid place to start against Houston
with all their issues going on. But when we look
at the Jaguars, you were up close and personal with
him this preseason. What are we expecting? Well, I mean,

(37:32):
I think the expectations are high down in Jacksonville for
the Wars, just because they have Trevor Lawrence number one
overall pick. They bring on board Florida, I guess, a
Florida less and they would call him urban Meyer, who
has been a winner at every stop that he's been
at the collegiate level. Can't he make the transition up
to the big weight game. And so you've heard about
all of the conjecture and the conversations about urban Meyer,

(37:55):
his tactics, his ways bringing controversial people in sending them out.
But now I'm starting to play ball, and I think
the one thing that you have to kind of hang
your head on if you're a Jaguars fan is urban
mind knows how to coach football. And so this is
an interesting game with the Houston Texans because it's a
lot of unknown. How does Trevor Lawrence deal with what
we call the eyes defense from Lovey Smith, all eyes

(38:17):
on the ball, zone coverage, trying to see if they
can steal a pick or two off the young fellow.
The one thing I know about Trevor Lawrence is they're
trying to put it all on his shoulders. Right away.
You will see them trying and run the ball. But
I think you'll see a lot of the Clemson playbook.
And if he gets comfortable like we've seen him do
at times during the preseason, it could be a big
name for him. It could be that as you say,

(38:39):
with with Houston and Lovey Smith, you know, you know,
you know what that Lovey Smith defense can look like.
People if you get the guys that can fit it right.
We know to Rod Taylor isn't gonna turn the ball over.
That's that's the one thing, right And as we've talked
about you referenced in earlier, I talked about it all
the time. I mean, just go down the data points.

(38:59):
It's anywhere between se of winning, you know, winning. The
turnover margin like Thursday's game is such an anomaly. I
want to say, it's like chance of winning you get
put plus three turnovers. So yeah, it's just ridiculous. All
about taking care of the football, all right. So for
this game, for me, I'm looking at Houston to take
care of the ball and that love he's gonna be

(39:21):
able to dial up a couple of things to get
some hits on Trevor. Does he get rattled? No, I don't.
I don't think he's that guy. But I think it's
enough to where this is a grinded out kind of game.
Over under this one is forty five and a half.
I'm taking the upset. I'll take Houston to win at home.
I'm not taking the upset. I'm going to jad Warris.
I don't know enough people on the Texans to say
that they can score points. I don't know any player,

(39:42):
I don't know any of that. But if they give it,
but mark Ingram but if they could with Lindsay had
no idea because we never really saw him with any
level of consistent because I would be all over to
Houston texts. But I don't know, But that's just it.
I don't know what the Jaguars are and just have

(40:03):
a big flashy items in the window. Ain't getting me
in to buy here. How much would it say for
me to get you to watch all of that game
in entirety without flipping the channel. I'd do it, and
I will do it once the games are done, because
I'm a I'm a I'm a glutton for punishment that way, Bucky,
you know that. But I'm curious, like, because Houston they're

(40:23):
still professionals, right, They're still gonna go out there. Are
they undermanned? Have they done from an organizational side? The
tanking thing right because Roby traded all of that? Don't know.
They just don't have enough notable names, Brennan Coax says
the wide receiver. But you're hard pressed, as an average
fan named anybody to go for this team. And you know,

(40:44):
great players make great coaches, and I don't know if
they have enough good players to make this coaching staff
look really good. Yeah, because certainly the name recognition, even
beyond Trevor Lawrence. Everybody knows Chinnault Jr. Everybody knows DJ well.
But from between fantasy football and trading words and last,
James Robinson is a big deal. I love him. He's

(41:04):
one of my top five running backs for the week.
I do think he has a solid day. We'll continue
with the games, why because we've got a former top
three pick playing his old team to get things started.

Why because well I talk a lot, uh and look,
we're getting Bucky's breakdown. So I always have the yes

(42:29):
and question, which means it's not a quick back and

He'll be giving his game breakdowns and and all throughout

(42:52):
the week, given you content their NFL network. I mean,
you know him, you love him, You've heard him here
for years. It's Bucky Brooks. Let's and a man all
all the time. That's what we're doing. It's a beautiful
Sunday Funday. It's finally back, like all the speculation, all
the what does this mean? Like? And we're not. It's
gonna be a short sample size, right, it's one game

(43:13):
on a seventeen, right, because we get that extra fantastic
week on the back end. But some of these questions
will at least start to get tape and plays and
tendencies to kind of break down going forward as opposed
to I don't I don't know. It looks good on paper.
I like what they did. They're that guy. That guy

(43:33):
has had a really good career. Maybe in a new
spot he's fine, But we just don't know. Now, we
just don't know. And it's such an interesting uh deal
when we think about Jess and Panthers, and I guess
it's kind of a perpetual haul pass that Sam Donald
has gotten for his lack of performance. Well, how about
we start with we start with that game. Let's let's
start our two uh with with a good one I

(43:57):
think of to two quarterbacks. Uh. And we're trying hard
to figure out directions Jets Panthers. As you say, the
free pass for Sam donaldy, Well, when you're on the Jets.
That's kind of how it happens, right, It's like, Oh,
can't be all him. It's the Jets and the personnel
department and the problems all the way through. So Carolina,

(44:20):
he's a home favorite by four against his replacement, Zach
Wilson and the New York Football Jets. Yeah, this is
interesting because, uh, the Carolina Panthers are favorite in this one,
and you just look at how they have put together thing.
A lot of it depends on christ McCaffrey. McCaffrey is
back and playing like the guy that we saw a
couple of years ago. Then it makes it a lot

(44:41):
easier to believe in Sam Donald because Christie McCaffrey's presence
will alleviate a lot of the covers things and the
blitzens and those things that he will face. That's it.
Sam Donald has to prove to us that he's a
good football player at the position. He has struggled with
his passer rating, his completion percentage. Uh, he's already admittedly
seen ghost when it comes to different pressures and those things.

(45:04):
Let's see how he does. Because now there's no excuses,
no explanations. He's away from the Jets. He has a
better supporting cast in his mind, a better coaching staff.
Sam Donna has to put up up now. Yeah, everything's there.
The offensive line is really the only question on the
offensive side, right. McCaffrey comes back, and Mike Davis played well,
but he's not Christian mccaff right. I mean, that's it.

(45:24):
He he did well for for the Panthers and what
was kind of an odd year off for them, losing
losing McCaffrey and some other injuries. But you talk about
the sporting cast Robby Anderson, and we had a pretty
good report with with the Jets. D J. Moore. You
got Terence Marshall from l s U that you brought in,
so you you've got receivers Ian Thomas. They're expecting to

(45:47):
step up a little more at the tight end position.
And we know all those draft picks last year we're
all defenders. So in theory, with the experience, they got
better in the year two. Yeah, they certainly should be
a much of the team in year two. Um, the picks,
the players, guys being able to get ready, uh, to
make it happen. I just think this is such an

(46:09):
interesting matchup just because we really don't know what to
make of the Jets, Like we kind of assumed that
they're terrible based on um, maybe the no names and
some of the injuries that have already happened there. But
the Carolina Panthers are also a question mark because they
were okay a season ago. But how much can we
give them when Christie McCaffrey comes back and these other

(46:29):
guys that missed some time. I don't know. Man, to me,
this is like a real toss up, because, yeah, the Jets,
Corey Davis, we do know one thing for certain, Zach
Wilson's got a live arm. Beyond like beyond that, there's
just a lot of questions how what it means. Robert Sala,
you know, the guy that everybody loved watching and his
animating animated dude. So we can have a you know,

(46:52):
multi caam approach with him, uh to to watch his
histrionics over the course. I don't know if he can
act like that as a hit coach. I don't think
that works. I don't. I don't think you can be
that the monster as a hit coach decordinator. Yeah, hitd
coach as a coordinator. You're colorful as a head coach.
You become a put a target on your back. You

(47:12):
can be as emotional when you head coach. I haven't
to make all of these decisions, so people find his way,
but I think it becomes a tired act if he
is always like just trying to win the day. Yeah,
you gotta keep your composure to quote Will Ferrell in
old school. All right, so it's a four point spread,
Carolina like it if it was down at three, uh

(47:36):
and then touchdown win? But uh, yeah, I'm gonna I'm
gonna take Carolina to win this game. I'll trust Sam
Donald has found at least something and Christian McCaffrey saves
his bacon. Oh, I'm gonna go with the jess and
I'm gonna look at you. Because they've seen Sam Donald.
They intimately know Sam Donald in terms of what makes
some tick, what gives some problems. Because of all that

(47:58):
intail that they gathered over the years and try the
camps and practices against him, I believe the defense kind
of fitted out. Even though the majority of those guys
are knew, I still think there are enough guys they
were around that can be able to talk about Sam
and how to bes plan good front seven for sure,
Marcus may still in the secondary to try to eliminate
one of those wide receivers. I dig it jets with
the upset for Bucky Smith will be so happy until

(48:21):
he's not next alright, alright, another game of all right?
What am I gonna see? Uh? Nick Sirianni on the
road at Atlanta and Arthur Smith. Forty eight and a
half is the total? Atlanta a three point favorite. Matt
Ryan no longer with Julio Jones. It's Calvin Ridley's show.

(48:42):
They bring in Kyle Pitts to the aforementioned Mike Davis
there at tailback. Not a sexy move, but a guy
that when you're talking about your if you're cash strapped
or looking at a guy who's just all right. He's versatile, right,
He catches the ball out of the backfield pretty well,
runs the ball at about a four three four four
flip in between the tackles. So that works. Now, it's

(49:03):
just for Philadelphia. What is Jalen Hurts and I think
it's a good matchup firm here. I don't think Atlanta
solved those defensive woes. I know they had injury issues,
but personnel wise some issues. But Jalen Hurts a guy
that's I like the attitude he had last year, right,
comes in and does his best right the offensive line

(49:25):
was awful whatever, and and the numbers and I don't
know that he's set up for long term success by
the fact that they traded for Gardner Minshew, that Joe
Flacco is still there. I don't know that there's And
the Deshaun Watson rumors continue, like, I don't think he's
their guy, but for now he's their guy. It's him,
Devote Smith and those tight ends ERTs and got it
once again. Very talented offense. Uh. DeVonta Smith comes over

(49:48):
one of the best rob runs in college football a
year ago. Dallas got An zach Or is probably maybe
the best once to punch at the tight end position
in the league. He's guys can line up and play
in line tight end that can line up outside and
play his flex tight ends get of the Eagles a
lot of versatility and flexibility out of the personnel back age.
Jalen Hurts is interesting to watch because how much of
the quarterback run game to the coach utilize. Did they

(50:11):
take advantage of his skills? Did they try and have
him to kind of play, like a quote unquote real quarterback.
That would determine a lot about how successful he is.
If they asked him to play like he's always played,
he'll be Seriously, they asked him to do different stuff,
you could take him walk. Yeah, I'm looking at the
the upset here on the road. I'm gonna take the Eagles.
Jalen hurts with his legs to make an extra play.

(50:32):
And I you mentioned those tight ends like I love him,
especially that Arts is back in like that was gonna
be a big loss, especially at young quarterbacks. Again, and
maybe I'm old school in my thinking, but it seems
for all the years I've been watching, when you've got
a young quarterback who's still trying to figure out what
he's doing on the edges, if you've got two guys
that could create a mismatch down the seams, and like

(50:54):
you said, those two in particular, you can move them
all over that you have an opportunity and Miles Sanders
out of the backfield, while Sound is a big play
threat as well. So there's there's a lot that the
Atlanta defense will have to try to overcome. Yeah, a lot,
didn't Lanta defense, We have to overcome. But um, you
know what's up. And it'd be tough to see what
they're able to do offenses because this is the first

(51:15):
time really that we we've seen Calvin really as the
true number one, meaning there's no Julio Jones in the building,
there's no Julio Jones coming back. Calvin Ridley is the
number one and the unicorn did everybody loves in the
pre draft process cal pits. Well, let's see how he's
able to live up to the hype as the ultimate
pre draft hype bunny because he got plenty abouts. You

(51:37):
get a picture of the statue they already built for
him outside the stadium or way. Evidently like he is everything.
So let's see how good they are. Let's see how
good uh this team is. It would be interesting to see.
All right, Atlanta minus three, hmm, I'm gonna go to Eagles.
I think the Eagles are better team. All right, so
we both picked the upset there next? All right, Giants?

(52:04):
All right, Teddy Bridgewater is your starter, and I think
folks are finally kind of coming around at personnel wise,
they're pretty talented and there's a lot of skill on offense.
And then defensively in theory they're healthy. Bradley Chubb a
game time decision, will keep an eye on that. But
Von Miller's back and there there's some teeth for Vic

(52:25):
Fangio in what is a Be's I mean, the hot
seat is certainly there, and he makes the choice to
go with Bridgewater over Drew Lock. So you have the
live arm on the bench right. Fumble issues is really
the the big separator. Interceptions isn't as big as I
think people tried to make it. But Drew Lock is
a fumble machine once he tries to get out of

(52:46):
the pocket. So looking for Teddy Bridgewater to to really
try to leave this team in a packed a f
C West. Yeah, it's all about the turnovers. And when
you look at the Eddy Bridgewater surrounded by the kind
of team that he's surrounded by now, which is a
playoff caliber team. You said that Freddy is eleven during
his time with the Minnesota Vikings in the New Orleans Saints,

(53:07):
say whatever you want to say about how you performed
last year with the Carolina Panthers. When Teddy Bridgwater is
given a team that is capable to get into the
winner circle more times than not they get to the
winner circle. So for me, I knew this would be
a tough choice for Vic Fangio, But I feel like
he went with a guy who he believes is not
going to lose the game, and that's ultimately going to

(53:27):
give them a chance to win the game. You add
Kyle Fuller to the secondary. We talked about that offense.
UH two added Monster will be curious for fantasy purposes
about the workload Splint Melvin Gordon, the incumbent, Javonte Williams
coming out of your school, UH, North Carolina. A lot
of expectations for him and certainly rising up draft boards

(53:49):
as we got towards the end of draft season. But Sutton, Judy,
Noah fans kJ Hamdler, You've got opportunities. And I'm curious
with that running game and perhaps Teddy we saw it
a little more towards his end in in New Orleans.
He was starting to stretch the field, didn't do it
a lot the first couple of games, and then he

(54:10):
got comfortable, and he's got guys that can run under it.
If he does get the time behind that old line,
he does have guys that can run up under it.
And it's important that he finds a way to kind
of maximize it Anderson DJ more guys that can win
their one on one battles, and so it's really important
for the the Broncos to be able to kind of
figure it out, give him some plays, have some things going.

(54:32):
The offense was humming too in a preseason, but remember
it between preseason and regular season. Let's see how this
unit plays and performs. On the other side, Dan Daniel,
Joe turnover machine, Sae Kwon Berkley. Every day it was
Mizzy ready, don't know. And now he's evidently gonna be
out there, but how effective is he Because if he's
not the guy for three years ago, this offense has

(54:52):
no chance even with the high poward editions of Gola Day,
who also has his injury injury issues right and to
be is an unproven number one receiver because you've given
him big money because he was on the market, but
is he really a number one? And when you bring
those kind of contracts and guys into the locker room,
everyone is looking in, buzzing and evaluating, and so if
he doesn't live up to the hype, they know ownership

(55:15):
kind of messed it up. And so this is one
they gotta hear. Right, So we we look at uh
the Denver Broncos. Uh minus three at the Giants. Forty
one and a half is your total m Broncos minus
three less going to Broncos. Yeah, I think, I think,
I think I'm there with you. We'll roll it up Giants.

(55:35):
I mean, this is such a curious year, right, not
only for Daniel Jones, but for that front office. Just everything.
You just don't know, so many question marks and you're
just trying to figure out who's who and what was
what they have the pieces on defense, Let's see if
they can do it all and they grind it out
and it's right, you can't play that balance, slow it down,
you know, old school NFC style that you might like

(55:57):
to otherwise. All right, coming up, we'll continue you through
our path of the National Football League Week one schedule,
a big Monday night game. Excitement abounds, uh Unsinn City
and we'll get into that next year on Fox Welcome
back in It is Fox Football Sunday. Mike Rmen alongside
Bucky Brooks having fun with you with our squad. UH

(56:19):
give him the shot the on the updates, you'll hear
him in just a couple of minutes. Our guy, Dan
Buyer at Dan Bayer on Fox, my teammate on the
I wantch Reflex podcast. Uh, Fantasy Goodness Week one Predictions.
That's up Apple podcast, Google Play. You can enjoy that anytime.
We do that twice a week. Uh. You've got our
guy Chris Perfett at Chris Perfett on Twitter. Uh, does

(56:41):
a lot of work with the Detroit Lions. Had an
interview with Barry Sanders this week, so go give that
a listen. They got they used some inside dope that
they had from other players to kind of get into
Barry Sanders and his history there in Detroit. So look
at that. And our producer Nick Battalia at Merk with
one arm M E r C. He's a Falcons fan

(57:03):
and he was just saying, what's my season gonna look like?
So a lot of angst, a lot of handwringing, but
certainly a lot of excitement. We thank the guys all
the good work they do. Want to make sure you
know you give them a followers. Well, Uh, why because
they've got opinions and they're part of our Fox Sports
Radio family. At Bucky Brooks where you find Bucky as
well as links to all the work he's doing on

(57:24):
the digital side and and all the television appearances and
everything he's got popping as well as you know high
school football updates that he gives us as well. You
find me over at swall Window them. I'll answer any
sits start questions you have for the Fantasy Realm coming
up at the top of the hour, uh, and we'll
try to lean you and give you my my ideas
of how games are gonna work out right, because we

(57:45):
create the storylines, you're looking for opportunity and then what
they do with it. Hey man, I can't control it.
A couple of fumbles turnovers early really changes the way
of football game flows. But that's what we try to
do here. Uh. Pink the picture, tell the tale, and
really get in the heads of of how things schematically look.
And Bucky is is a guy that you know he

(58:07):
loves breaking down what the schemes are and how you
find those mismatches. So that's what we're trying to do
here every Sunday. Hey man, let's do what. I love
talking about the X and os. I love talking about
the matchups and the people and Deak stuff. It's a
lot of fun Sunday fun. So let's get into some
of the people, because well, you're gonna have some new
faces in the backfield. All right, Ravens at Raiders, all right,

(58:32):
big game at Allegiate. This will be Monday night football.
Ravens still like a road favorite in this one. Uh
minus four fifty uh. The over under the line has
moved two and a half points given the spate of injuries,
both offensively and defensively. We talked a lot about the
running backs for Baltimore that have gone down one after
the other. Marcus Peters also out in the secondary. So that's,

(58:55):
you know, an upgrade perhaps for a fantasy flyer on
a Hunter Renfrow or some uddy out of that receiving
corps for the Raiders. But we look at Baltimore, Bucky,
you're talking about the Houston backfield. It's kind of the
same thing. When when you get down to what the
Ravens have had to do. Gus Edwards j K. Dobbins,
because I got some suspicions confirmed and some reports that

(59:17):
he was gonna be used out in the slot and
some other places get him out and and really utilize him.
So I was really bullish on him. I got that
confirmed after the injury, so I was good, but he's down.
And then Justice Hill was just like, not not a
guy that was gonna be featured, but it's still another
body that was on the depth chart. So now you
you shuffle it out, you bring in guys that have

(59:38):
had some glory in the past, but can you resurrected
to support Lamar Jackson. Well, here's the thing. They don't
need to resurrect their past glory because in my mind,
you have the view Lamar Jackson as RB one RB
one is the consistent one thousand yard gainer in the
past two years for the Baltimore Ravens, the Baltimore Ravens
who have led the league in Russian yards in each
of the past two years. And so to me, because

(01:00:00):
Lamar Jackson gets the ball on every play, you have
to worry more about him executing the hidden ball trick
than those other guys. And so because all the attention
is on number eight, it doesn't matter to me who
is in the backfield. Those guys are going to produce
because they're going to get the opportunities when everyone overreacts
to Lamar Jackson doing what he does with the ball,

(01:00:22):
those running backs would be the biggest beneficiary. I don't
expect to see much of a drop off from the
Baltimore Ravens at all. I like him. I like this matchup,
and I wonder are the Raiders even good enough to
explode it if it was an issue on defense? No,
I don't, I don't. I don't believe they are. I think,
uh that that's the largest question here. And some of
the names that are there, I know in Gottway's name

(01:00:44):
comes up a bunch of all right, look what they did.
I gotta see it right. And for the offense, I
need to see consistency. Derek Carr is a guy who's
you know, he's got a high completion percentage. That's great.
That doesn't win football games, and we see that year
after year. And John Gurdon the great first half of
the year coach. So if you're ever gonna pick them
or bet on them, I guess before they get to

(01:01:05):
the midpoint, you're fine. Yeah, But that's not that's not
a team I'm firmly behind. I'm looking at you know,
Jacobs is a mid RB two. But some injury questions
now start to creep in receiving corps. You've got speed,
but you can carve best utilize. It's Darren Waller or
Bust as it were. So I'm with you Baltimore with

(01:01:26):
the defense and running in and look, you can always
find another running back. I hate to say it. We
were having the conversation off air, right Derrick Henry and
contract wants or what he quote deserves. That might be
great in theory, but we see that production. We mentioned
it with McCaffrey and Mike Davis. If you looked at
the per game, it was everything else around it that

(01:01:47):
didn't work. Yeah, it is everything else around him that
didn't work. And you can't find running backs. I'm not
saying that did, just a diamond doesn't. But depending upon
the quarterback, the better the quarterback, the lesson to need
to have a great running back. The less of the quarterback,
the greater than need to have an A plus running back.
And so with Lamar jackson Um being a dominant player,
I just don't believe it's going to be as big

(01:02:09):
of an issue. And once again, the Raiders defense hasn't
shown much when it comes to being able to offer
resistance against the run or pass. I'm not necessarily work.
Give me Baltimore, doesn't matter what spread it. Yeah, Stanley
Zeitler back. The offensive line solid, big, strong, right, Yeah,
big offensive line maybe one of the biggest in football.

(01:02:30):
The smallest guys two engine and fifteen pounds. They want
to move you. They are a bunch of movers that
came to move to furniture around your den. They can
move the Raiders around looking for a big day out
of Tyson Williams and eventually all those guys they did
add at the receiving core to help Lamar Jackson. They'll
come back from injury right the as of now, you've
got Sammy Watkins, but you've got Rashad Bateman, who's gonna

(01:02:51):
be like adding a free agent in week eight once
he comes back from the injury. Yeah, I'll take Baltimore.
The greatest thing I think hardball has ever done is
direct guys. I don't know that I'm gonna get a
long shelf life, right, how long Lamar's body can do it.
But this makes him the best athlete, right, maximizes his capabilities,
and gives us the best chance to win. It really

(01:03:11):
ties to the Cam Newton legacy. Right, Folks seem to
forget that he was in the league a decade and
he took a lot of hits, a lot of hits,
which means that you're not going to year seventeen if
you're playing that way. But if you get ten and
you get an MVP, all another. But that's a reasonable expectation, right, Like,
I mean, that's the one thing that we've gotten spoiled
by the fact that Drew Brees and all these quarterbacks played.

(01:03:34):
But that wasn't the expectation. The expectation if you can
get ten on your quarterback, that's a long right, not
trying to get twenty years out of the same quarterback.
It's uncommon. Tom Brady is a unicorn when it comes
to that. Can don't got ten eleven years and that's
a long run. That is, it's a hell of a run,
especially when you're carrying the ball a hunter times a
year like that. That and that, but that was what
made him the player that he had been. All Right,

(01:03:56):
both of us on the Ravens for this one will
continue with the games a little more rapid fire in
just a minute, But first we turned it over to
Dan Buyer. We get an update on the injury information
across the NFL and we just get to hear his
lovely Hey guys, something my wife doesn't care to hear. Ah.
The Packers and Saints. No, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
Packers and Saints playing one of the marquee games in

(01:04:19):
Week one. Of the Packers getting some good news. Linebackers
and Darius Smith expected to play in the game. According
to the NFL Network, despite dealing with a back injury,
Saints defense could be a little short handed. Corner Marshahn
Lattimore is considered questionable because of a knee issue. NFL
Network is reporting the Colts quarterback Carson went still dealing
with a sore foot following surgery. In this preseason we'll

(01:04:42):
start today against the Seahawks. Quinton Nelson also would go
for Indianapolis, but as for Wentz, the NFL Network report
says he could be a little limited with some of
the play calling that Indianapolis does because of that foot issue.
Browns and Chiefs play for five Eastern time in Kansas City.
Brown's wide receiver O'Dell Beckham Jr. I game time decision
as he returns from the surgery last season. Giants are

(01:05:04):
going to have running back say Kwon Barkley, we believe
today against the Broncos, but you may not see a
lot of say Kwon Barkley could have a limited workload
in the contest. Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb is a game
time decision with an ankle issue. Chargers running back Austin
Ekeler will be a go for l A today in
d C against Washington. That's at one Eastern and multiple
reports said the Texans plan on not playing quarterback to

(01:05:26):
Shaun Watson not only today against the Jaguars, but really
for the rest of the season. But trade talks could
heat up around the trade deadline in early November. ESPN
says the Texans want a combination of six picks and
or players in return for Watson. Men's final at the
US Open coming up at four Eastern time today, Tom
seed Novak Djokovic takes on second seed to Neil Medvedev.

(01:05:48):
Djokovic becoming looking to become the first man to win
the Grand Slam since Rod Labor did so in nineteen
sixty nine. Back to you guys, thanks so much. Dan
followed Dan at d and Buyer on Fox. Uh that's
his Twitter handle. Follow Bucky at Bucky Brooks for all
his latest UH quips and updates and insights as the

(01:06:10):
games go on later on today and throughout the week.
His worked linked to that at Fox sports dot com.
Find me over at Swollen Dome. A lot of ranting
yet to come as we get ready for kickoff just
uh two and a half hours from now. So let's
get back to another game, Chargers at Washington. Now, we

(01:06:33):
got a retooled offensive line for the Chargers in front
of Justin Herbert. This one is essentially a pick him
at this point kind of movement all over the place.
Forty four and a half year over under. We talked
about Ryan Fitzpatrick a little bit earlier, Terry McLaurin, Curtis
Samuel had to go to the I R. So that
was one of the additions that they thought was gonna
help the passing game for Washington. Not there. And Tonio

(01:06:55):
Gibson a guy as a rookie, fantastic. I like him
a lot, But it's gonna be all about the defensive front.
Right when we're talking about sweat, we're talking about Chase
Young and what they can do to try to disrupt
Justin Herbert Austin Ekeler from all reports is going to play.
You know you've got Keenan Allen and stats for days. Uh,
you're shuffled up a little bit the rest of that

(01:07:16):
receiving corps. But at Justin Herbert year two, what can
they do defensively to try to get him off his game?
Because he was he was money a year ago. Yeah,
Justin Herbert his money wanted to bright young quarterbacks. Um
that we have in our league. Uh. The Washton football team, Man,
they are dominant upfront. Uh, Montes Sweat and Chase Young

(01:07:37):
are chasing the record for a sac dual. Keith Millard
and Chris Dolmans sit years ago. I want to say
thirty eight sacks by them. And so when you think
about this team, they have to win on early downs
and they have the people inside Jonathan Allen to be
able to clog up the run so then they can
get after it. The Washington football team has to win
with their defense setting the pace, meaning they're able to

(01:07:58):
keep the score down. They how to find a way
to run the football and take care of it. The
problem is when we go to the other side with
the Chargers, the charges basically have given Brandon Staley, the
exact same thing that he had in l A with
the Rams, meaning a dominant front line defender. Last year
he had Aaron Donald. Now he gets Joe Bosa. He
gets a star player in the secondary. Last year was

(01:08:20):
Jalen Ramsey, Now is Derwin James. Because they play so
much zone with their eyes on the quarterback, and because
we know that Fryan Fitzpatchy loves to try and fit
the ball in the mailbox. He likes to make those
tight window throws turnovers and player key keep an eye
on the charges on this when this defense could generate
a ton of turnovers. Joseph up the middle causing some

(01:08:41):
havoc and in that secondary. As to say, you got
Chris Harris, but Derwin James when he's on the field,
I always say it, it's the Bob Sanders effect. When
he's there, he's a disruptor. Not the same style right
in terms of run stuffing or whatever, but he makes
things go in that secondary, and you see a huge
difference when he's off field. So they're here there for

(01:09:01):
the opener. I'll take the Chargers on the road. Yeah,
I got the charge. I'm with you on the charges.
Just one like, even if it's a slow, slogging out
kind of game, just one more play offensively. Yeah, I
just like, I just like the charges over there, and
I don't trust Ryan Fitzpatrick and and some of these
matchups and also Scott Turner, Ryan Fitzpatrick, what does this
offense look like when they get to the nutty, the
nitty gritty ninth team that Fitzpatrick has started on. Alright,

(01:09:25):
a game later on tonight, I will be there being
either yelled at or screaming myself. Horse, let's get it
the most maligne QB one and he hasn't thrown a pass.
Uh in this uniform. It's Andy Dalton and the Bears
coming to Los Angeles. Depending on where you got in,

(01:09:46):
this line is moved quite a bit anywhere from seven
to nine. So you're just ahead of the next key number,
but you certainly moved off that seven. Reports this morning,
Ian Rappaport, amongst others. Tell guess something, we kind of
already expected that Justin Fields will find his way onto
the next year. Well that's that's great. I mean, you've

(01:10:08):
got the nice toy that you just won't take out like,
I mean, what's the point of doing all that stuff,
having Christmas, Christmas shopping, and you never you never break
it out the box. No. What what's interesting is watching
it over the course of the preseason, right that that
offensive line is gonna struck like there's no question. So
like watching it tonight, Andy Dalton solid quarterback when he

(01:10:28):
can't move, he can't move, so let him take the
beating into the line gets better than you put justin fields. Well,
I'm not gonna go there. That's I've heard that analysis.
Go there or put feld and so he can run around.
I think if you're trying to extend plays, right, go
back to last year right when the Bears may when
naggy and I'm not a matt naggy guy. You know this.
You and I have worked work together enough to know
this decision making you get around with you're Mattie for president,

(01:10:52):
t shirt off. Well, you know what. At one point
he answered a reporter's question, I think it was two
years ago with I'm not an idiot. Like the guy
kind of pointed out how he hadn't used David Montgomery
and a band in the running game, and he just
started by going, I'm not an idiot. I took a
white T shirt and I printed I'm not an idiot.
That was my Halloween coster. Okay, so but you watch

(01:11:13):
last year, right, you have Mitchell Drabinsky, who what what
all young quarterbacks you see it if you let them
use their legs, guys are more accurate than others. But
all those guys can throw on the run. Now today's quarterback,
you had the minor quarterback, that athletic. They can get
on the move that it give they have another pitch
and they are right. So last year they go to
Folds statue relatively speaking, and and and it was awful.

(01:11:36):
And they go back to Drabinsky and they averaged thirty
points a game to finish the year. The run game
finds some room, they find some creases. Today one of
their guys, Darnell Mooney, was really good as a rookie
over fifty catches. He's questionable but still expected to play.
But it just to the point, right you you went
and you had Folds, and you added another veteran quarterback

(01:11:57):
in Dalton, and then Fields falls in your lap, like
I don't know when it comes schedule out of the gate.
Outside of this game, there's winnable games out there. But
to the question how much they're playing the political game
of trying to keep their jobs because there's no known
end game to their contracts. Both Ryan Pace and Matt Naggie,
this is the inside baseball thing. It used to be

(01:12:19):
on their profiles. It's not on their profiles anymore. So
I believe they both got an extra year extension. So
now it's the I think they're playing that Game's almost
like when you keep a major League baseball prospect to
have his service time and all that stuff, all that nonsense.
I'm wondering if that's not part of the issue here.
I want it's a really interesting thing. He has to
get it right though, because this is a team that

(01:12:41):
certainly has enough talent to go back to the playoffs.
They went a year ago with Mr Drabinsky, and that'sked
about solving the quarterback. Offensive line is a mess, and
so the defense needs to pick it up. I know
we were really excited a couple of years ago when
Khalil mac went there, up and down. I would say,
in terms of his his level of dominance, he needs
to be a dominant player for this defense to play right,

(01:13:03):
So put a lot of pressure on him. He has
to wear a big sum burrow in and he's on
the injury list today, expected to go, but still question mark.
Nose tackle Eddie Goldman will not be available for this game.
That's a big loss. He got downgraded at the end
of the week the other side, and we don't want
to belabor the point, but Matthew Stafford all lies on
him and Sean McVeigh. Maybe folks start looking at him

(01:13:25):
that the genius tag maybe maybe not necessarily off. I
think that maybe pushed things and he pushed it off
to the side and it's still there if he can
grab it. Yeah, the crown. The crown is a little
tilted right now, and so we need to see how
you adjust. Um took the lead bust storm when he
came in because he was able to utilize motions and
jet suite action and tight splits that really put you

(01:13:48):
in a bind. And now the football worlds hip to that.
So what does he have now and everything? Ever since
the Super Bowl when the New England Pages exposed his
game and really beat him up, he's had a tough
time having these magical games. And then you swap out
the quarterback you put in Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford has
a bigger arm and all this, but the receivers are

(01:14:08):
the same. They don't have Sean Jackson's there, though he
is I mean older de Sean Jackson. If he's the
young Deshan Jackson, I would be all over it. But
he can't stay healthy. So they don't have an A
plus in that room. And so they got some really
good Bees, but a plus receiver that by definition commands
a double team. They don't have anybody on the perimeter

(01:14:30):
that demands a double team, and so that makes it
That makes it tougher. So I can't go full on
crazy and call for the upset. Although I think this
is gonna be a close game, so I'll take the Rams,
but I'm taking the Bears with the points, and I'll
just stipulate to this. I wouldn't doubt if they beat them.
I think the Bears could typically traditionally, I know we
don't like to use history, but the Bears typically played

(01:14:51):
the Rams really really well for whatever reason, sometimes matchups
play out like that. I'm with him that I like
the Rams to win, to like the Bears to keep
a close. That's a pretty big spread there as we
look at nine, all right, Uh, he's Bucky Brooks on
Mike Carmen. This is Fox Football Sunday here on Fox
Sports Radio. Coming up, we have to go rapid fire,

(01:15:12):
and we've got a couple of doozies to break down,
including the ascent of the Browns doesn't continue one. We'll
start try to answer some of those questions. Next here
on Fox Tales of Greatness. The narratives of games, game
flow don't always just read the box. Becore, folks, and
that's why I will be here for you every Sunday.

(01:15:33):
Mike Carmon alongside Bucky Brooks. This is Fox Football Sunday
on Fox Sports Radio. You find Bucky on Twitter at
Bucky Brooks. Find me over at Swollen Dome. He's got
a lot of digital content coming up, a couple of
columns each week, and obviously video hits across the NFL network,
Fox Sports and FS one right showing up on the

(01:15:53):
on the proverbial couch virtually of course with Colin Coward,
I mean, so all of those and coming up in
a ten minutes you will see Colin Cowhard uh and
the crew as they get ready for the couple hours
of simulcast from FS one and Fox, all the breakdowns,
all the analysis that you've come to know and love,
and the injury updates from Jay Glazer will be there

(01:16:15):
as well as Fox NFL Sunday takes over at nine am.
But coming up Carissa and Colin and Mike Vick and
all the crew coach wants Dad, etcetera. Uh, you'll see
hear them in about ten minutes from now. I do
have to make mention every year I do the lose
my ass so l you with the oom lot z
m y and like a Chicagoan that I am as

(01:16:38):
a z z uh money towards charity. So five bucks
a loss plus five miles out of treadmill, so everybody wins.
If I'm really bad, charities get a bunch of money
and I get in better shape. Uh. And you can
mock my my progress or cheer me on at swollen
Dome at uh swollen Dome on Instagram. So we'll have

(01:17:00):
videos will make will make fun of me, because self
deprecation is one of my If I were to, you know,
put on the hey, what are three things you like
about yourself? I'm really good at it and I make
people at ease by mocking my own failure. Uh, let's
continue well by just going through more games and let's
see if I can earn five dollars for charity. Next,

(01:17:22):
we've got the Browns and the Chiefs. Let's move along
to that game. As we look at Cleveland coming off
a storybook year for Cleveland, right, I mean, you look
at what Baker Mayfield powered by that running game. I
don't think Nick Chubb and and Kareem Hunt get the
love that they really should on the national scale, y
because we care about quarterbacks more. On the defensive front,

(01:17:44):
Miles Garrett. People didn't like him for the one incident,
but you can't deny he is one of the finest
players that we've got playing defense. They shored things up,
use some draft picks, Greg Newsom out of Northwestern a
first round pick. As we go. Uh, you look at
the line for this one, Bucky, as we we set

(01:18:04):
this game up is five and a half Kansas City.
All the principals are back in a reconstituted offensive line.
And we talked about it earlier in the show. Andy
Reid Week one, I betting against him, I wouldn't be
against him, and in fact, I think this might be
one of those games. That gets away from uh the
Cleveland Browns because Kana City is a dominant team. I
think they hit it. And remember thirty eight and eight

(01:18:26):
with Pat Mahomes and starting quarterback. They lost Super Bowl
because the tackles were out four in ninety seven yards
side to side. Though he ran a lot, they really
didn't do much. But UH make you wonder when the
hit was actually gonna find him? All right, both of
us are on Ksey next packing There we go the
Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers after a weird offseason on

(01:18:49):
the road, and this one's being played in Jacksonville, New Orleans.
Jamis Winston I championed him to get this job and
get that shot under Sean Payton. Tasom him were valuable.
I think as the Swiss Army Knife as it were. Uh,
Packers three and a half point favorites forty nine the
over under. Yeah, I think he goes over. I'm gonna

(01:19:11):
go with the Packers. I'm gonna say that Aaron Rodgers
finds a way to get it done. Even though I
believe the chemistry in the locker room is a little weird,
the Packers appear to have a better team. I'm going
with number twelve, and as Dan told, this is a
Darius Smith expected to play for New Orleans. Unfortunately, it
will come down to a I have to push the
ball Jami's turnover, so some of those narratives will creep
back up, even if he plays a brilliant game otherwise.

(01:19:33):
But I agree the Packers take it and they cover
that three and a half. Next Seahawks at the Colts
later on, we've got the Carson Wentz question mark on
one side. Seattle gets Dwayne Brown back. Uh. We mentioned
t J. Watts contract earlier. Uh, you know, there was

(01:19:54):
a lot of you know, the contract opt in kind
of thing that people were getting mad about. It was
guys of multiple races here. So like I heard some
narratives that we're bad on one end and and didn't
wasn't inclusive. But that's neither here nor there. That's a
tale for another time. Seattle minus three. The spread has
moved four points over the course of the time, the

(01:20:16):
over under down to forty nine. Yeah, I will take
the under, but I'm gonna take the Indianapolis Colts in
this one. This is a team that is set up
and running the football is the best way to knock
out the Shaws when you run right at them. They
have a tough time playing the defense. They'd like to
play Taylor and Hines and Marlon Mack is back, and
for now Quentin Nelson will be on that offensive live.

(01:20:38):
This is one we're going to differ. I will take
Seattle on the road because I don't trust Carson Wentz.
I think that the ball does eventually have to come
out off his hand and it ends up bad. We'll
leave the big boys guy on alone alone. Let's try
to get these last two games in real quick Cardinals Titans,
which might be one of the most interesting. And I
probably should have been better about putting this at the lead,
because I think this is a great one. I think

(01:21:00):
it's a great one if you're Tennessee Titans fans. This
offense is legit. Julio Jones at an element should create
more room for Derrick Henry. There we go. I'll take
the Titans. As we look at the spread, its Tennessee
minus three Arizona question, don't Larry Fitzgerald, which really just
still confused me and the Vikings back on defense against
the Bangles, their three point favorites on the road. Joe Burrow.

(01:21:22):
As much as we love the talent, I don't know
that the lines there yet for him. Yeah, the line
isn't there. Let Vike, he's on this one, Danil Hunter
and company getting done and the offense making it go.
