Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports greeting in another beautiful action
pack day underway. It is Father's Day. Raise a glass
to yourself, to your dad, you'r nka, your grandpa, whoever
helped in raising you to the fine human you are today.
Wherever you're listening, however you're listening, we appreciate y'all spending
(00:24):
a little bit of time with us today. As we
get rolling, we got one holiday. Dan Buyer's gonna compare
one of our big sporting events winding up today to
another holiday because we love the gluttony of sports. That's
really what it comes down to. You, my guy, Dan Bayer,
what's going on.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Happy Father's Day to you. Mike, one of the better
dads that there is out there. So it's an honor
to sitting next time. You made the ranks today, Thanks buddy.
Yes you are here, there and everywhere with your girls.
But an exciting day and like many dads who are
golf fans, just jacked up like Mike North would be
about day final round of the US Open, especially at Oakmont.
(01:03):
We talked about it last week, talked about it throughout
the week on the network, but final around today, excited
about it.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
It's finally here. Pittsburgh, one of the places I love
to visit many summer days spent sweating my you know
what off in Latrobe watching the Steelers get to work
in their throws and training camp. Thus far, the weather
has not been great, but it hasn't delayed things. Maybe
(01:29):
slowed down the course of course, which was we already
knew was going to be difficult coming into the final round.
Dan only five golfers and even or better.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yes, And the rain actually on Friday night a lot
a bit of a reprieve because it did soften up
the course, thickened the rough a little bit, but scores
were relatively better than they were the first two days.
Curious to see on how it responds. But it's not
going to play firm and fast. There's always the threat,
especially when the USGA gets their hands on a course,
then I could get away from you if if there
(02:00):
is no rain and it gets hot. But the rain
on Friday night really softened things up. But still I
think that Oakeman is playing difficult and today should be
an exciting final round. I know it doesn't have all
of the big names that you would have hoped for,
maybe any of the big names, but it does have
interesting storylines and you've got about a handful of players
(02:20):
that really have a legitimate shot at winning.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Sam Burns at the top. His best finish in a
major came last year, tied for ninth at the US Open,
so trying to finish the job this round around. We've
got Hoveland up top. The two big stories that kind
of took over. Rory's over here for a second, because
we talked about him a little bit last. But we
(02:44):
had an albatross in the first round, yes, agree, which
we got deep into literature and history of what an
albatross is because you always say, well, it's a bad thing.
These guy's three under par on a single hole. How
is that bad? Well, it goes back to a poem
of the Mariner where the guy kills at the albatross
a seabird and then it's around his neck and it's
(03:06):
becomes a curse for him and the crew as they
say along, really good poem. You should go read it.
But there's your quick history lesson. But it's like it's
supposed to, like it's always been used to it. It's
an albatross around the neck, So why is that great?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
In golf, I can understand why it just wouldn't make
any sense. And I'm with you, just like double eagle
doesn't make any sense to me, sure, because if an
eagle is two hunder Parisian double egal be four hunder
bar but it's not. It's just one offul lead. So golf,
I don't mind albatross. So I will say albatross more
than double eagle. Yeah, but I can completely understand where
you're coming from in the complexity of the definition.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
I would say this perhaps because it's shone light on
the rest of the Let's just call it what it is.
Terrible round that Patrick reed had on a relative basis,
though not awful, right, I mean he's tied for forty
first going into the final round, he's nine over, but
on a daily basis, hey man, with what we see
with scored weren't terrible. But I loved his response to
(04:04):
it and being like, yeah, it was one shot great.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Yes, here's that's the difference between you, me and them, Mike,
And I mean professional players are people who play to
that level. They understand how much luck is involved. And
so Patrick Reid said this was his third albatross slash
double ego that he's had in his career. Victor, Yeah,
(04:29):
Victor Perez, Yes, had had a hole in one earlier
this week, And I just heard an interview with him
prior to his final round and they were congratulating him
on his hole in one, and he's and he accepted it.
He said, it's great to be a part of US
Open history, but there's.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Also second Ever, there's also well.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
I think probably on that whole it was I think
it's fifty fourth overall in all of.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
The US Opens.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
But to be a part of to be a part
of the history, it takes some luck. So sure, if
you got in your sam birds, if you shoot sixty five,
sure there's bounces that have gone your way. But you're
golfing your ball pretty well around the course. There is
some luck that comes into it. But you and I,
if we get a hole in one or an eagle
or my goodness, a double eagle, you.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Know it's hard. Dan, Yes, Well, that's the thing, is
the double legal.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
It's a lot of the players of our ilk can't
even get there because you're not putting the ball on
the green on a par five and you're not driving
a par four and having an ace on that hole.
But that's the difference is they understand also on just
how lucky they can be. Now they're they're skilled, but
you got to have some luck when you're you're hitting
(05:40):
the ball from two hundred and eighty nine yards away
and it ends up at the bottom of the cup.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Well, we knew it was going to be a difficult
course as it were. I mean we look at I
mean Perez is tied with ten other or nine other players.
He's plus four, but he's tied for eleventh, Yes, showing
how tough the scoring is there at Oakmont this week.
And so since you're out on the links as much
as schedule, and and your child who's now swinging a
(06:06):
club though like he's now before long, do you do
you enjoy the struggle?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Do you?
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Because I mean there's just the big I do. Why
disparate place in the golf I do.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Especially in a place like this, which I absolutely love.
We talked about it last week, but Oakmont is probably
my favorite course outside of Augusta National. I think anybody
who watches golf and you know, has the dream of
playing Augusta, and outside of Augusta, Oakmont was the place
I wanted to play, and it was fortunate enough to
do it nine years ago. But it's not like a
(06:44):
course of her saying this is fun like it's it's a brute,
and it's a brute for for everybody who plays it.
The membership has it this way. But Mike, this is
where the holiday comes in. This is Thanksgiving. And the
reason that I say that.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Is when you have scored.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Lot of stuff, there's that that could be the naps
taken on Father's Day by some that you'll also get
on Thanksgiving. But it's it's Thanksgiving. It's the hot dog
at the ballpark. It's it's time and place. And so
the US opened over the past few years really cannot
escape criticism from any direction. Eight years ago it is
(07:26):
too easy at Aaron Hills. Then now this time around,
they were worrying if it was going to be too difficult.
But Mike, I like it like this. I like the
difficult test. I like it on this course being difficult
because it's like having turkey on Thanksgiving. It just tastes different.
I'm not having turkey every single week. We're not roasting
a turkey and serving it up. Sure, maybe you'll have
(07:48):
some slices from the deli. But this is different and
it just hits like just like the turkey hits on Thanksgiving.
This hits for me. And maybe you don't want it
every single weekend and every single time tournament, but having
it once a year, having the USGA tighten the screws
on the courses that they're traveling to, and this isn't
a regular tour stop like they'll be at Pebble Beach
(08:10):
in a couple of years and twenty twenty seven. Again
we see them play at Pebble Beach every single year.
Oakmont we get to see once every nine years, and
it'll be back in twenty thirty three, so another eight years.
But I like it when you can tighten the screws.
Next year it's at Shinnecock. They've had issues with the
course getting away with from the USGA over the last
two years, but still it's it's a sight to beholding
(08:34):
to see these guys struggle. We're watching on the screen
that you can't see right now.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
JT. Posten is just walking up the fairway like he
lost his dog.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Guy. It's a thousand yards stairs, no question, the wind's
blowing a little bit. He's walking all by himself, Caddy
Kenny and yeah got in screen like it's yeah, there
was a sad, long long walk.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Rory McElroy yesterday and finally speaking with the media just
said that, Yeah, I felt it was a different feeling
when you're or a unique feeling when you're on the
cut line and you don't care if you come back
for the weekend. Now you and me getting to play
a nice course like this, we would take it every
second of the uh sort of the day. But there
are a lot of guys that are just like, all right,
(09:15):
I can't wait to get out of town, like it's is.
I can't wait for this to be over with. I
just want to go back to my you know, normal routine.
Let's go shoot fifteen under power. It's just a long,
long week, and when you're not in contention, it's tough
to deal with. But I like it that way. I
think it's great. I think it's I think we talk
about luck in getting a hole in one or a
(09:36):
double egal or an albatross, however you want to put it.
There's luck in terms of the lies that you get
sometimes in the rough, like it worked out for Victor
Hovlin late and is around yesterday. I'm seventeen. He hit
it in the rough and he was fortunate enough to
get a good lie. But most of the time in
this rough here at Oakland, you haven't had it. And
I don't have a problem with that. So I wouldn't
want to watch this every single week. I want to
(09:56):
see the best do what they do. But at this point,
to see the that we usually see week in and
week out kind of be brought to their knees, I
think that's I think that's good.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
There's something to be said for I mean, and McElroy
became one of the posts your children out of it
won his comments last week. I'm not motivated, Well this
is another this is another major sure, right, it's one
thing to tell me you're not motivated, and maybe you're
not swinging your best or you're gonna go a full
full of Phil Mickelson, not as a strategy, but just
as all right, I'm gonna have fun and and and
hit the ball around, take some gambles and see where
(10:29):
I where I come out. But like you talk about,
you know, being motivated, and then you're here at a
plus nine, you're you're blowing up stuff. I mean, look,
you you're armed with the club as your profession. Rage
rooms are generally you get a bat or something to
hit stuff.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
What a golfers do chuck clubs?
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Right, Like, yeah, you're implemented destruction, Like you get to
go into the rage room with Yeah, you're right. But
but the other the other part of it is is
you know, for for the dad. You know, as you
ponder today, this is where you sit your kid down
for a couple of minutes at the US Open and
you can equate. You know, wow, Dad, those guys they're
not playing so well. It's like, you know, this is
(11:10):
like last Thursday when I asked you to take the
garbage out and you didn't. It struggled with that. You know,
you went plus nine, that dude.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
You really had.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Everything went back. You know, you didn't need your vegetables.
You taught sassed mom a little bit. Maybe you hit
your kid's sister, but you know, the garbage, the garbage
is gonna take itself out. Son. You disappointed me, just
like my favorite golfer here trying to find and salvage
that fourteenth hole.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
It's it is a grind, it absolutely is, and to me,
it's been fun to watch it also provides drama of
what's gonna happen today. I go back a month ago
when we were here in Scotti Scheffler the lead entering
the final round of the PGA Championship. It wasn't over,
but it was over, and at one point John Rahm
did catch Scottie Scheffler, but there were enough points further
(12:02):
onto the round where Scotti Scheffler could birdie and separate
himself and he ends up winning the championship. That is
not how this plays. If anybody posts a number or
gets to that point, these other players are going to
hold on for dear life, and I think that's fun
watching them down the stretch and seeing like the seventeenth
(12:22):
hole has been a driveable hole for some this week. Mike,
you can have a birdie, you can have a double
bowgie on that hole, depending on how you want to
take it on. And I think that that drama that
we see is going to be hopefully prevalent today. I
really only think four players really have a chance to
win today. But the good news is is at least
(12:43):
if you're say three shots back, there are only three
players north of minus one, and that's obviously burns the leader,
Adam Scott and JJ Spahn. So if they go out
and falter and shoot seventy four or seventy five, and
you could go out there and put up a sixty
six or a sixty five, you may have yourself chance
winning at one under par. It's kind of a longer shot,
(13:03):
but I think that it still can provide fun. And
you look at the top four guys, all four of
them have different stories. I mean Sam Burns really, for
as well as he's played, has really not been a
factor in majors. JJ Spawn's only played in eight majors
in his career entering this. Adam Scott, we know, he's
(13:24):
heartbreaking twenty twelve at the Open Championship, redeems himself and
the Masters in twenty thirteen, those twelve years ago, it's
still his only major win. And Victor Hovlin, we think,
is a guy that could probably win a couple of
majors in his career, maybe four or five. Extreme talent,
but he's knocking on the door. So there's enough storylines
to mix as well to make it interesting today.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
If nothing else, they should just promote the hell out
of the fact that Adam Scott second because of the
actor and all the things he's been in that it
might draw.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
A couple extra eye balls.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
For a while, it was vice versa because Adam Scott
the actor would joke about all the tweets that he
would get. But yes, I think now there's a bit
of a role reversal. But I think a lot of
people will be pulling for Adam Scott today because he's
such a good guy. And it's no disrespect to Burns,
Spawn or Hoveland, but he's just the more familiar name
in the name that people have you seen for a
(14:12):
decade and a half.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Put the bow on a Scottie Scheffler sitting at four
over part of that big pack tied for eleventh as
we enter the final round. We'll keep an eye on
this as play develops. He's Dan Byer on Mike Carbon
at Dan Byron Fox where you find him at Bayer
Talk at Bayer Grahams and that s find me over
at Swollendome TikTok. Eventually I'll just start really doing what
(14:36):
it says at Harmon Rant. We got Shay, we got Chris,
we got our guy Ilo there, he's already breaking news
on a Sunday morning. We'll get into that top of
next hour. But coming up next, we continue our run
across the fantasy universe and a headline that got me interested.
Can losing twenty five pounds make you a better fantasy player?
(14:57):
I'm trying to find out. So's this NFL. We'll tell
you who it is and what it's all about. Coming
up next on Fox.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Hey, welcome in, Well, welcome back. It's Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports Sunday. My Carmen dan byer with you. We're
pleased to be with you. Action already on the diamond.
The Detroit Tigers getting after it with the Cincinnati Reds.
We've got the US Open Final Round getting ready to
be underway. No hockey, no basketball, later basketball moving to
(15:37):
Monday night. Seems silly to lose the window, But you
schedule it, Hi, you schedule it. We got that game
on Friday. We're tied to too. We'll talk about that
internest a little bit later.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
The scene shifts to back to Oklahoma City. But then
you just kind of wonder, then why did we have
to wait so long? Betweens Game one and two. And
the reason why you have the Wednesday Friday is because
they stay in Indianapolis and you want to give an
extra day for travel. But boy, this is it's dragged on,
like it really has for someone who's tried to champion
(16:09):
these finals or at least support it and not completely
turn my back to it. Oklahoma City Mike beat the
Timberwolves in the last week of May, right, so they
had played two games basically for the first half of
you know, June. When they finally resumed the series on Wednesday,
it was just, yeah, it just it's taking forever, and
(16:33):
hopefully it goes seven games. You know it's going to
go six, but I want I want to pay off
for our patients.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
Well, and then we'll go straight into the draft after
that's the beauty. Yes, I mean it's scheduled at this
point to where it bridges out all the way through.
I was going to make a bridge or ten reference,
but that gets us into a weird space. We start
talking about Wicked and Jonathan Bailey and all of that stuff,
and most people have no idea what the hell I'm
now talking about.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Fox.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
That's well and know where you find me. We continue
our fantasy previews, going division by division. We look at
the AFC West and the teas was a star losing
twenty five pounds. Will it make him a better fantasy player?
For myself, I think my brain's a little bit sharper.
I'm being able to stay up a little later, so
yeah it might. It might help my twenty twenty five prognostication.
(17:23):
When we get to the I watch your Flex podcast
in earnest here coming up. You can find all old
episodes up wherever you get your podcasts. Dan and I
and our guy Ian Roddy get back into the lab.
But according to reports from Jeremy Foller of ESPN, Travis
Kelsey's down twenty five pounds now. He was at the
Stanley Cup final the other day. Great shot after shot,
and I know either folks were incensed at their arrival
(17:47):
or we're happy to see an extra storyline. When all
of a sudden, the camera pans to Travis Kelce and
Taylor Swift. They did. She then went to the children's
hospital next like, there's lots in floor and there's a
lot of stuff to it. But and now that that series,
you know, Florida taking the stranglehold in theory on Saturday Night.
(18:09):
But Kelsey reportedly losing twenty five pounds this offseason. Now,
Taylor Swift's eras tour ended last year, so no longer
on tour and being plied with brats and beers at
every turn. So back in the lab as it were
going into his age thirty six campaign, they're saying he's
at like two twenty to two twenty five, so lean
(18:29):
and mean. Last year it didn't look the same for
fantasy purposes. Still, ninety seven yards or ninety seven catches,
eight hundred and twenty three yards, only three touchdowns. That's
still a pretty pretty good year, pretty serviceable year. Now,
if you had some help on the outside, it pushes
it over and the team gets over. But certainly from
(18:49):
a fantasy point, you had the regression. Ninety seven catches,
that's a lot of work between the hedges, and he
had to block a lot more last year.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Yeah, I think there's I think there's a lot of
interesting stuff to look between the weight that he lost
and his actual numbers. But the thing that I actually
love about this, and I don't think that this happens
with every athlete. Mike is just the dropping of the optics,
(19:17):
the dropping of the weight for the optics, because the
last time we saw Travis Kelcey was Travis kelce maybe
not giving it as one hundred percent in Super Bowl
fifty nine. So now when there's a question of are
you going to play next year? Are you not going
to play? And there was a decision that he made
weeks after that, Yeah he's going to come back. I
(19:40):
say good on Travis kelce Whether he still has it
or not, we'll find out in twenty twenty five. But
I think just the optics of being like, I've got
to be better because the takeaways from that Super Bowl,
the ones from the chief side, Travis Kelcey not playing
as hard as you thought that he should in a
Super Bowl was one of those people thought just there.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Are a couple of points, yeah, step slow or really
not engaging in blocking efforts and route running.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
So I have no idea if the weight loss will
help him during the season. I do know that it's
going to help him optically on the type of player
you are, and may then also reflect on maybe why
these last two seasons haven't been as great and maybe
maybe we know he's on the there's he's played more
years than he's got left in his career for sure,
(20:34):
but maybe this frees him up. Maybe he doesn't block
now as much anymore because he's taken the weight off.
Maybe they will use him more in situations in just
red zone spots. I mean just eight combined touchdowns the
last two seasons in times when we thought that he
would be the lone target. I am I don't think
that you can get any worse than what he did
(20:54):
last season numbers wise, for touchdowns and yards. So him
losing that weight I am all aboard for, but more
so because of the optics than just him bettering his
stats from twenty twenty four.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Yeah, I mean you look at what he was doing
the rounds and popping up at all the swift European
dates and global dates. It became a does he want
to do this anymore? Right? We asked that about Aaron
Rodgers ad nauseums. You know, he finally shows up and
gets his contract signed, and you know, you bring out
the noise makers from New Year's for that, because it's
(21:29):
a story that is now done and now we get
to see whether he and Arthur Smith get along and
what this iteration of the Steelers offense looks like. But
it's always the when we're off the field and it's like,
all right, are you training? Are you still committed? Now?
Did you earn some of it based on the Chiefs runs,
Because that's the other side. You could have said, hey,
you know, and he'll be ready to go. Well, he
(21:52):
was kind of right, still have some decent numbers and
a couple of games where he took over and showed
you glimpses. But if you're carrying that extra weight, you're
being charged to do other things because your offensive line
is struggling a bit. You're trying to jumpstart a run
game that frankly wasn't very good for most of the season.
(22:14):
Rice goes down to injury, takes a while for Xavi,
you're worthy to catch up. We'll get to him in
a minute, and the receivers. But it's just all of
that becomes a all right by the end of the year,
he's got nothing left. He looks like every day of
his thirty five plus years on this earth. So now
you can, at least in theory, leaner, meaner run him
(22:35):
in the slot wherever you're gonna line him up, that
maybe you can coax an extra big year, because I
think Kansas City is one of those squads that people
are starting to dismiss and throw away. Eh. Caution that
as much as you think the rest of the AFC
West may have caught up, you still got to knock
them off.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Yeah. Good point.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
I feel like you're talking directly to me because I
feel like I am one of those people who's kind
of not as bullish on the Chiefs. They are a
different team than they were earlier in his career. They
are a defensive team now as opposed to an offensive team.
If this is going to help them in red zone
situations and allow him to extend his career, kudos to
him doing so. The real I guess shock to the
(23:18):
system for me when it came to Travis Kelcey, and
I would assume it's for you.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Was it win?
Speaker 2 (23:22):
A couple of years ago in fantasy football, we had
Mark Andrews, you know, replace him, supplant him a top
the tight end rankings, and then there was so much
love for Sam Laporta last year, so you would see
Laporta maybe top him in rankings, and now brock Bauers
is in the NFL so and as Kelsey has continued
(23:44):
his career, it's not that he's been number two. So
when he was replaced by Andrews, maybe he was two.
Then then he went was to three or four, and
now he's not to that point anymore. So maybe the
value you get for Travis Kelcey will be a lot
better than what you expected over the last couple of years,
whether he's twenty five pounds light or not. But I
just love the optics of it of being like, yeah,
(24:06):
I didn't the super Bowl did not look was not
a good look for me.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
I got to do something different.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
As we look at it currently Fantasy prosana dot com.
I put my rankings up week to week there and
we'll make sure to evangelize on those better here in
the twenty twenty five season, and certainly wants the draft
process and I get to ranking which starts this week.
Kelsey sixth amongst tight ends. We've got three guys from
(24:32):
the AFC West in the top seven because obviously the
aforementioned Brock hours far and away number one, Evan Ingram
coming in at number seven.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Opportunity in Denver, I loved him in Jacksonville, and then
there were just I mean, a lot of things disappeared
in Jacksonville at times, but he disappeared as well. I
don't know This division, Mike, just as a whole is
to me, is screaming defense and in a way ball control.
And I feel Denver's better defensively than they are offensively.
(25:05):
The Chiefs are better defensively than they are offensively. I
think the Chargers play a brand of football where the
offense and defense work together. And then you have the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
That's no diffist.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
But the Raiders with two guys in the top five
for their position, sure, because genty is currently the ADP
fourth highest ranked running back. Wow, he comes in at fourth.
And this is where it gets interesting, right we talk
about defense normally complimented by a big running game. You
got gent coming in at fourth, and then you look
(25:38):
at the rest of the division. Omarion Hampton twenty first, okay, RJ.
Harvey coming in twenty sixth, and then just ahead of him,
Isaiah Pacheco at twenty fifth, and then we go to
the quarterback side. Okay, ready they just then well, if
these guys are low, what's going on? Over here, Patrick,
(26:00):
I'm still sixth.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Okay, I feel it's high, but yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
Bo Nicks at number eight, Wow, I.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Mean that's really high.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
And then Justin Herbert at eleven, I head of Gino
all the way down at number twenty five. Jano represents
value for me down there. There are weeks you're gonna
end up playing him. I think. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
I don't know where I don't know where Caleb Williams
is on this list, but I just know that you've
got Lamar, You've got Josh Allen, You've got Jalen Hurts.
All those guys would be higher than bo Nicks, and
I just I'm I'm shocked in that scenario. And Mahomes
as well. I just wouldn't feel comfortable with them as
my starting quarterbacks if I'm playing Week one, unless I
decided to completely punt on the situation. And for as
(26:43):
great of a season as bo Nicks had as a
rookie quarterback, I think it's the Sean Payton factor, I'll
say to that. Sure, the Mahomes one is that's the
one that's sticking in my mind when you bring that up,
because it's not I think that they're bad on offense anymore.
I just think they do things differently now and you
(27:04):
can count on him to win games, and that's what
it's all about. We saw good they were in close
games last year, and how they've always been good in
close games. That to me is more of the thing
that trumps anything, because I look at this division, Mike,
and those numbers are flying in the opposite of what
I say, but again, as a division that is more
(27:25):
controlled by defense than it is offense. The Genti factor,
And just to make that point, I actually understand that
because I think that there are three running backs that
you would say, all right, we just they're freaks of nature.
We like their situation, we love their offenses. Let's go
(27:45):
Bijon Saquan and Jamior Gibbs. But you take everybody under
Ashton Gents. I'm looking at your rankings. We're still wondering
if Derek Henry's gonna fall off a cliff Devan a
chan Is.
Speaker 1 (27:58):
I don't know what they're doing in mind.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Yeah, they're gonna have one of the worst offensive lines
in the league. He could be the only thing that
they have. But with that, there's also been some injury history.
Christian McCaffrey, same thing, Jonathan Taylor, same thing. Josh Jacob's
coming off of a great season. Maybe that would be
one where I'd be like, huh, okay, well maybe I'd
rather have the Josh Jacobs factor. But they also have
(28:21):
Chip Kelly in Las Vegas, and you know how much
Chip Kelly loves to run the football, And with really
no other real competition, it makes sense that gent is
going to be the guy rising up.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
Everywhere else, we're looking at guys like Bucky Irving, Chase
Brown and others that start to creep into the back
end of that top ten. So just the curiosity there
from a receiving standpoint, again, not guys jumping to the
top of the line. Outside of Bowers and the other
tight ends. In division, you're looking at Rashid Rice at
seventeen and mconkey comes in at number eleven talking about
(28:54):
PPR leagues the norm. So just you know, the Ronco
set it and forget it. I got five and thirty
before I blink. In terms of his game to game production,
Herbert at eleven is just he's one of the more
fascinating guys because everyone keeps trying to trumpet the this
is the year he breaks out. It's like, that's not
how they want to play. You brought up the way
(29:15):
Mahomes is now right, last two years twenty six, twenty
seven touchdowns into double digit interceptions QBR and all that stuff,
fun stuff that folks go down in the high nineties
with Justin Herbert. You've built an offense and a system
with Jim Harbaugh that they don't want him throwing for
five thousand yards and thirty five touchdowns if the defense
(29:38):
lives up to what they're supposed to be. And Hampton
is the half the running back that he's been trumpeted as.
Right because as the draft war On processed, war on,
I should say, yeah, genty was first, but you started
to hear the buzz of maybe possibly whatever. And then
he finds a place and a home with a guy
who wants to run the ball. In harball, you're gonna
(30:00):
be working for balance, so you might have a couple
of blow up games, and he did last year. He
had a couple of Herbert games. Are like, oh, that's
the outlier, and I think that'll be the case again.
Now in terms of ranking eleventh, it becomes the cumulative effect,
or maybe the offensive line is good enough. And this
is where we parse out the week to week starter
versus best ball season when we look at rankings, because
(30:23):
Herbert might actually still be standing unlike a lot of
other quarterbacks based on those behemos he's got working in
front of him in all Slater, et cetera.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Yeah, and they sid McKay Beckton this offseason, so like
of their sightings on offense, it's Beckden and Najie Harris.
So how much does that help justin Herbert? Probably not
too much, but it helps the Chargers as a team.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Right, Jagie Harris will fall forward for three point eight,
three point nine then, but they'll use them right, No,
But it's all about But that's what Pittsburgh did the
great success.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
The numbers weren't gaudy meme. Jalen Warren was the more
explosive guy. But three yards and a cloud at dust
is winning foot well. Whether it wins you fantasy or
not becomes the other issue.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
There's only so many stats per game, you know, snaps
per game, excuse me, and the stats that are going
to Harris then likely wouldn't be going to Herbert unless
they were obviously in passing situations. I did look up
one quick stat of the AFC West and this is
why I'm so surprised. Yards per play. Last year, the
Chargers were tied for fifteenth in the NFL with about
(31:24):
five point four. The rest of the AFC was in
the bottom half of the league, So the Chargers at
fifteen were that was the high point for teams in
the AFC West and yards per play, so that should
tell you a little bit on the type of offense
that you're looking for in that division that I just
don't necessarily think is there. Raiders were twenty eighth, Kansas
(31:47):
City was twenty second, Denver was twentieth.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Inside the numbers, We'll to be doing more of this.
Did I watch Flex podcast? Get it downloaded on your
iHeartRadio app wherever you get your audio. We appreciate you.
I Van Lies continuing to do big things at Nan
Byron Fox. Find me over at Swollendome. You hear Dan
during the week on The Gottlieb Show, as well as
Cavino and Rich and here with me on Sunday mornings
(32:12):
as we traverse the sporting universe. And helping us doing
that is our guy, Isaac Low and Crown over at
the news desk Brokes of News earlier today, Ilo, how's
everybody responding? Oh?
Speaker 3 (32:23):
It is a palm, big, big trade. Yeah?
Speaker 5 (32:26):
In the NBA today, social media in a frenzy because
of the ESPN report that the Memphis Grizzlies are trading
Desmond Baine to the Orlando Magic for Centavious Caldwell, Pope
Cole Anthony, as well as not one, not two, not three,
but four unprotected first round draft picks and one first
(32:49):
round pick swap. In Game five of the Stanley Cup
Final on Saturday night, the Florida Panthers won at Edmonton
five to two for three games to two lead and
fellas a possible i'minition that it was going to be
a positive night.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
For the Panthers.
Speaker 5 (33:03):
At least ten Panthers were pictured on social media stopping
for a pregame treat at an Edmonton area dairy queen.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
All right, yeah, let's go delicious.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Looks like they would win.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
Looks like they would go on to unleash a blizzard
of goals against the Oilers. Inside joke for a long
time Fox Sports Radio listeners. By the Way, Golf, after
three rounds of the US Open, Sam Burns has an
excellent one shot lead at four under par overall over
(33:39):
Adam Scott and JJ Spawn. Burns and Scott will tee
off the final round of two fifteen Eastern this afternoon.
One Major League Baseball game going on right now in Detroit,
the Cincinnati Reds and the Tigers scoreless in the top
of the third.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
Guys, thanks so much at Isaac Loewen crowd. Where you
find him see all his Angel City highlights if he's
getting ready for calls, tree and everything else for the
new Chargers season. Soon enough, warming up in the bullpen
as it were. I had Dan Byer on Fox. Where
you find Dan Find me over at Swollen Home, Fox
Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Radio coming up next. Yeah, you
(34:12):
know what time it is. Get your thinking caps on.
Who carries the flag when it comes to the US Open.
We'll debate, we'll find out as a team next here
on Fox. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio. Welcome
back and Fox Sports for Radio. Fox Sports Sunday. My carbon,
Dan Byert's with you. Happy Father's Day to you. We'll
(34:33):
get back into the NBA Finals coming up in about
ten minutes. As well as the trade that was made
earlier today. What does it all mean for the future
of the NBA. But as we do each and every
Sunday and on a holiday holiday holiday edition, I hand
the stick microphone to my gout Dan Byer.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Happy Father's Day to you.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Hopefully you guys can celebrates in Victoria's fashion with the feud.
Top seven answers on the board for the Fox Family,
made up of My Harmon, Chris Purfett, producer Shay and
Isaac lohencron I said, Top seven answers on the board.
Six are gettable.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
One.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
I've got to put a little caveat on Okay, countries
with multiple US Open winners.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
Okay, all right, Spicy, you mean just golf, right, yes, correct, correct,
only in golf only.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Yeah, we're not here, and I will need you to
be specific. Great Britain is not an answer. UK is
not an answer. I will need you to be specific.
There is also one answer here that I feel would
be so difficult that I actually have to give you
a clue. It's a state that has new in front
(35:44):
of it. So it's a country, but there would be
a state with new in front of it. Let's start
with Mike Harmon. Let's get over to you. I'm just
gonna go history lessons. So let's let's go to Scotland. Scotland,
all right, show me Scotland on the list. Thirteen wins,
Nine different players have won the US Open. From Scotland
(36:05):
over to Chris Purfett.
Speaker 6 (36:06):
I was just listening to Ernie Els talked to Dan
Patrick earlier this week. So South Africa to the Africa.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Show me South Africa, very player, Ernie Alison or Tief
Gusen your winners of the US Open. From South Africa
over to Shay.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
I'm not confident in this one. I'm gonna say, Spain.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Spain, good guest, great players, Sebbe Bisteros, Sergio Garcia, John
Ram's won the US Open. Is it Spain? It is
not Spain. But that is a very good guess, very
good guess. Loving the masters, Jose Maria Olethabel. Yes, but
Spain did not make our list. Over to Isaac lohen Kron.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
I'm sorry unless a mistaken has anybody said the United States?
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Yet? No?
Speaker 3 (36:51):
Show me the USA?
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Leaving it for you, ILove, she needed some help.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
Sixty one different players back around in my car.
Speaker 1 (37:00):
Sixty one huh, All right, there you go, shortly after
the show, the podcast will go up. You missed any
of today's show, shal I'll have it up shortly after
we get off the air. Search Fox Sports Radio wherever
you get your podcast, be sure to follow review, rate
it five stars, evangelize, send it to friends and family,
as we are a global enterprise, just like with this game.
Search Fox Sports Radio wherever we get to the podcasts,
(37:21):
you'll see today's show posted right after we get off
the air. So do we just say England? Does that
count that specifically?
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Show me England?
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Yes, there it is. Eight wins, eight different players from England.
So there are three answers left and again one of
them so difficult that I'm actually giving you a clue.
A state was kind of named after it, with the
addition of new let's go to Chris Purfet.
Speaker 6 (37:48):
Okay, so we've gotten Scotland, we've got in England. Let's
do Northern Ireland and just finish up the UK.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
Show me Northern Ireland.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Rory McElroy Graham McDowell actually went back to back in
twenty ten twenty eleven, with McDonald winning at Tebble Beach
and maceilroy at congressional Northern Ireland off the board. All right,
two answers left. Shay Spain was a good guest. Spain
had won up there, but they unfortunately were not able
to make it to two. And then there's the one
(38:16):
that's impossible, where you guys understand my clue that I'm going.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
There's new in front of it.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
A state has new in front of us. Yes, yes,
a state has new in front.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Of it, but it's a country correct, correct, I don't
get it, okay, And.
Speaker 6 (38:32):
It's not New England apparently New England.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
Canada? Okay, is it Canada?
Speaker 2 (38:40):
No, Canada has not had a player win a US
Open over to Isaac Low and cron.
Speaker 5 (38:46):
Okay, I'm still kind of unclear on this whole country
state new business. So I'm just gonna say I'm not
going to say New South Wales. I'm actually going to
say New Zealand.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
So it's a state they state with new and a
state with new in it, but it's a country state
with new in it.
Speaker 6 (39:03):
So the country is basically the name of that state
minus new.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Correct.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
States we have like New Jersey, but Jersey's not a country.
But if Jersey was a country, Okay, that's what I'm
just gonna go Australia.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Okay, show me Australia. Oh my gosh, wow. So I
guess it was New South Wales, all.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Right, Jeff Ogilvie and David Graham Final one. Put it
this way. It's either New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey
or New York. Okay, like those are the four states,
so it'd have to be Hampshire, York, Jersey or Mexico.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Okay, this is tricky, yes.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Okay, but I don't think Chris was I don't think
Chris was factually correct when he was saying what he
was saying.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
Well, he went to New England, so we we had
an issue.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
We got five Mexico. It's not Mexico.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
Gues Jersey was.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
A country it was. We'll do that in a minute.
It's Dan. I'm keep on going. Hey, welcome in. It's
our two of the program Fox Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Radio,
full slate of activity all around US Open Final Round
from Oakmont. I love that once the balls in the air,
they look like they're getting ready to have a plane
(40:20):
take flight on a runway. At Dan Byro on Fox
where you find Dan, you hear him during the week
part of The Doug Gottlieb Show and Cavino and Rich
Find Me weeknights, yelling at Jason Smith seven to eleven
Pacific as we watched the throngs go hold a hole,
waiting for the leaders a little later on this morning,
a little bit of the fomo atmosphere. I know you
(40:41):
were eager to get out to Oakmont. I like going
out to Pittsburgh, So I think we both lost. Yes,
as much as I love southern California and hanging with
our crew, no question.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Well, two years ago, you and I were at the
US Open at La Country Club, not far from our studios,
and we were one of the first people.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
On the grounds.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Yeah, it is crazy to hear lawnmowers going on at
night or in this case, early in the morning when
it was still dark out.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
I was waiting for something to come and attack me
as I stood there, you know, looking up the first
ones on.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
The media shuttle, the whole deal.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
You had the media media Center to ourselves for like
a good hour. But it should be great action. Just
looking at the leaderboard right now and taking out someone
who's maybe won under power through four holes. There are
five right now. Legitimate rounds under par on this final round.
Rory mcro is actually one of them, as he's three
(41:35):
under par on his final round today. So Rory's got
it going through fourteen holes. But that can be a
bit of heads up Mike to is there a low
score out there? How difficult is this?
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Playing well?
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Rory right now is on track for sixty seven. Things
can change obviously over the final four holes, with fifteen
and eighteen being difficult holes, seventeen as a birdie hole,
but it gives you a sense of maybe what score
could be needed if somebody wanted to come up and
try to take something away from the leaders. But that's
what we've got right now at the course is the
leaders will be teeing off within the next ninety minutes
(42:10):
or so, because rounds are a little bit longer even
with two sums, and if you need time for a playoff,
you need some of that daylight.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Still, yeah, I'm opening Rory just walks off the course
no matter how well he shoots today, Like if he
has a great round, I don't want to see smiling
that Rory. I was about to wall. You don't get
to be pouty all week and then to come in
and say, Okay, I saved it all.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
I was going to walk off the course because of
the question I just posed to you guys, And I
apologize for that. Oh that was using nature of it.
It was also one that I just thought would stump
Steve Hartman. And what do you know, today's the day
that he shows up late at Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
So we go back, Yes, we go back to the
feud last hour and we got into a discussion and
there's the music. It's a trigger effect at this point
is that we went through the nations most represented in
all time wins for the US Open, and we we
rolled through pretty well, right, a couple of guesses. We
(43:07):
had Spain. Well, unfortunately it's a great guest, right, yep,
So thinking in the long history that there might have
been another. Right. So we're talking multiple titles along the
way US and we've got England, We've got we've got
all Scotland all the leaderboard, right, Scotland the number two answer.
But we were stumped on the last and I understood
(43:29):
the clue and then it became the all right, well
where am I throwing my dart? So you said it
was it's a US state that's represented.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
With new ahead of it.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
Yes, and then it becomes a oil we we can
run through the list of states, whether you learned it
by by song or just wrote memorization. But then trying
to figure out in the history of our land current
former like how many splinters have we had in European
nations and nations of the world. I'm thinking about Jacko
(44:04):
Warner the countries of the world from animaniacs and trying
to figure out where there might be And I failed
geography at this stage of my life because I can
look it up well.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
I'll tell you this.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
I wanted to do a cutoff, but I couldn't because
Scotland last one to one in nineteen twenty five, and
the titles that were won by Spots I could have
said nineteen twenty five, but the titles won by Jersey
were Ted Ray and Harry Varden. Varden won his in
nineteen hundred and ted Ray one his in nineteen twenty.
I'm not trying to put you to sleep on Father's Day.
(44:39):
What I'm trying to tell you is I just should
have figured out a better way to answer to give
the question I should have just given. Jersey should have
said it's kind of a bon Jovie album. It's where
they're from. And then we could have moved on.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
That's all right, that would have been a little too easy,
and part of it, it's the hard that makes it great.
Stealing from baseball movies in the past. Maybe to watch one.
You guys did well.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
Even Aaron Torres texted me and said South Africa, so.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
He was y good. You know, it brings everybody together.
That's the whole point of including that. Maybe over a
nice pancake breakfast. Maybe you're into your third third martini
brunch or mimosa, I don't know, whatever you're doing. Maybe
you were uptail gating for this because we also had
the College World Series going on in the backdrop, and
(45:29):
as we were discussing the the Jersey miss to round
out the feud, we're talking with Chris Purfett and he
shared with us one of his bucket list items is
to go be participate, be it participant in the jell
O shot competition that goes with the College World Series.
(45:50):
Now LSU taking out a huge lead, but it's a
competition I've known existed, but Chris is the first guy
that has ever said you know what I want this because,
as I said, do you guys during our conversation with this,
I'm not eighteen anymore and shots for me are a
bad idea. What makes this that you want to do? One?
(46:12):
And two? Can I watch a live leader board because
that's going to get out of sorts and there's probably
gonna be a lot of legal ramifications because now we're
watching people drink.
Speaker 6 (46:20):
So I don't know if there's a live leaderboard, but
there is several sites that have kept tracking this on
three and apparently there is a Twitter account cws shot
board the quad a sponsor, not the sponsor, but might
as well let people know where those are posted live.
So this is a restaurant in Omaha, I believe, Rocos
and they do a five dollar jello shot challenge and yeah,
(46:44):
like I actually, Arkansas's trying to keep up with LSU.
So this became a legend I think a couple of
years ago where LSU, I believe, racked up sixty eight
thousand Jello shots and that was the year also they
won the College World Series. And I feel like college
baseball says a sport is getting bigger and bigger every year,
or at least more prominent on my televisions. And with
(47:07):
it comes this tradition of just if you're there, you
go to Rocos, you declare, you get however many shots
you want, You declare who your college is, and it
goes up on a board for you. So we've got
right now LSU at ten ninety seven. This is as
of I think seven am Central time this morning, but
I will nine eight hundred and twenty three for Arkansas.
Speaker 3 (47:29):
Chris took it to a level that I didn't think
that it would be.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
I get going to Omaha and trying to go and
check out the College World Series. What I thought, like
bucket list is, let's go to a game. Yeah, let's
go see the game. Let's go watch maybe the final series.
Let's that's on my bucket list. His was I gotta
get to Omaha for the College World Series and do
(47:55):
a shot. So USC, yeah for USC on the shot board. Now,
they would have to be in the College World yeries.
Speaker 3 (48:01):
They were. They were almost in the Super Regionals this year.
Speaker 6 (48:04):
So the hope is it's the Trojans are on the
men for their basketball program.
Speaker 2 (48:08):
But yeah, the fact of not catching a ball game,
it's just to make sure that his shot is counted.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
Now, yes, now here's where I take it. Because the
business mind of mine decides to go down this path
of five bucks a shot. All of these folks lined
up to give me money. What's the liability insurance of
all of this? That's the big question. I mean, right,
what is my cost to that? Because at five bucks
a shot, I'm printing money.
Speaker 6 (48:36):
These are Southern These are Southern college sports fans, by
the way, mostly imbibing, Like no, LSU, this is like
sixty eight thousand, that's chump change for them, No, but
worse than that in botan rouge on a weekend.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
I'm just saying, though, like sixty that like just for
that school. I'm already over three hundred grand. I'm over three.
This is a scheme FORCA. Yeah, without a doubt. And
now we're talking about it. Jell Dope, Yeah, go back Jello.
I mean, the only other time Jello's shown up for
me is I've got a very eclectic If you look
(49:08):
through my Instagram scrolls and what pops up because of
you know, the walls having ears, it is a vast
array of things. Like last night, my daughters and I
went down to San Diego. Nice day trip to go
see the Book of Mormon. So now all my Broadway
stuff comes in with the playlists and everything else. So
I was like, hey, here's a live thing from two
(49:28):
thousand and eight of this guy in his first brought. Wow,
that's kind of cool. And then you click on that,
Well what happens? That spawns another nine billion things, not
to mention all the TV shows and movies that we watch, ads, songs, ads,
sports stuff, quite obviously, and it becomes this weird thing.
But Jello popped in because someone took a Beatles license
(49:49):
Jello mode and had the Jello submarines that they made
us part of a project. And there's the eleven Jello
so it all comes together. Jello submarine shots.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Anybody, by the way, props to Murray States for holding
their own and they I mean they may not win it,
but it's like making a Final four. I would say
that you'd still want to hang a banner for how
well they have done. But for Chris to again, my
ears were waiting for I've got to check out a game,
not I've got to get my Jello shot on the board.
I would assume the equivalents like I did the US
(50:22):
Open and Thanksgiving? Like, why there's parallels is I got
to get to a Kentucky Derby so I can throw
up on the infield Like that would be the equivalent
instead of watching the actual horse race. It's just getting
blitzed enough that you're sick, and yes, end up doing
your work on the infield.
Speaker 6 (50:40):
I have become enamored with weird fan traditions, especially in
college sports and in like anything really, so like this
this counts as that Tailgates had Botton rouge.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
Like I love the pile tri of it all.
Speaker 4 (50:55):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (50:55):
It also reminds me of And it's obviously not exact,
but how much do we love during the college football
conference championship games the Doctor Pepper competition? Sure, Like it's
not it's not that, but it's something from like those
games and those things that you end up looking forward
to that is a sub part of the main event.
Speaker 1 (51:17):
Yeah, we need to We.
Speaker 3 (51:18):
Don't compare the chess passes to the jello shots? What
do you you?
Speaker 2 (51:21):
But you're looking for an update? I think that I'm
not saying that the same thing. But the point is
is you have these conference championship games, and what do
you always do stick around for halftime because the chess
passes are coming through. I don't think there's I don't
think there's I think they're in the same realm.
Speaker 1 (51:39):
I'm also going to compare them. They both suck. Okay,
shots are terrible, Like there's no adjoining of it. It's
just how fast can I get drunk? And normally they
give you that fireball crap, which is the worst thing
ever concocted. That's it's appropriate. It's got the devil on there.
It's terrible.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
I'm a sponsor. What happens would b WHYU makes it
to the College World Series? That's just gonna be a
big zero. Do they get five bucks for a little
shotglass of water?
Speaker 3 (52:07):
Y's really?
Speaker 1 (52:09):
I don't know. I'm trying here. I'm trying here. I'm
trying to get everybody them. But yeah, well they're out
of that. But it's funny you bring up Murray State.
A guy from Murray State has no longer got a
teammate with him. See what I do. The transitioning to
the NBA and the big tray that we got the
details from Isaac Lowan crown On as Desmond Bain leaves
(52:29):
John Morant to head to Orlando. See it ties back
to the Book of Mormon. It's all together for me
here on a Sunday morning on Fox Sports Radio, because
that's where the one guy wanted to do his mission
work was to go to Orlando. That was the dream.
And then he ends up in Uganda and we go
from there. But all of that to say, Bain goes
(52:50):
to Orlando and you're talking four first round picks KCP,
who seems to bounce around. That's a guy that's going
to have a nice hallway of jerseys when it's all
said and done. But he goes to a squad finished
at five hundred and forty one forty one. You have
Paulo bon Carol, you have Wagner who just starting the
(53:14):
first year of his five year extension this coming year.
Jalen Suggs, Wendell Carter, former draft pick of the Chicago
Bulls in twenty eighteen. Like, those are your starters that return,
and you bring in Bain, who's a nineteen point a
game guy. Solid, He like Taylor Jenkins, gets away from Memphis,
and we talk roster construction because immediately we want to
(53:36):
compare what we're watching in the NBA Finals, And I
always question whenever there's a bunch of draft picks involved, Dan,
who's making them is really and the continuity, consistency and
approach of an organization, because now we're talking multiple years,
and as we see, we make fun of the Knicks
lots of promos, and certainly I deal with it with
(53:57):
Smith every night on our show is watching their coaching search.
You got a lot of guys in the unemployment line
who are standing there with not only their their resumes.
Maybe they went to USC maybe they went to another
high powered educational institution. They're also maybe Coach of the
Year awards under the other arm that are just standing
around and waiting. Likewise, executives get cycled through very quickly.
(54:20):
So whenever you do the hey, I'm going to get
four first round picks, and now obviously they can be
spun off into other things whatever it becomes the Wow
Memphis setting up for the just long rebuild, retooling, et cetera,
with the wild card that is John Morant and all
this great talent. But day to day, you know, as
our old colleague Tom Looney would say, but aren't we
(54:42):
all in terms of decision making and whatever else. But
for Orlando taking a shot in an Eastern Conference that's
pretty much torn up in terms of what you're expecting. Right.
Cleveland was the best team this year, but we saw
them flame out in the playoffs. Boston there in a
weird crisis mode, not only from Salary cap Hell, but
(55:04):
Jason Tatum Ain playing this year. Jonason Tannakoopo may not
be a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. Maybe even if
he is, you know, right, what their spot is, right,
so go on. So the opportunity is there. And even
if you say, well, this guy doesn't move the needle
trying to win now, you're never gonna have me argue
against it.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
I think that that is a big part of this.
I will also say this, we're calling it a blockbuster trade,
not because Desmond Bain's involved, but it's because of the
four first round picks.
Speaker 3 (55:32):
And that's the part that.
Speaker 2 (55:35):
I'm having a bit of a difficult time wrapping my
head around.
Speaker 3 (55:41):
But I can understand.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
If you're having negotiations and you're the Grizzlies and you're
talking about what you want in return, you say to
Orlando exactly what you just laid out in the Eastern
Conference saying, you guys are gonna have a top pick anyway.
You've got Powlo, ban Caro is great, You've got this
young core. You probably will be in the playoffs for
the next five years at least with that group. And
(56:05):
now you had this piece. So if you're giving us value,
you're not giving us a lottery pick. You're not giving
us a top ten pick. You're giving us a pick
that's after twenty. So I think that's that's probably how
the conversation went, Mike. But I also honestly think I
don't know if Memphis was ready for a deal like this.
But when you throw up that, hey, you moms will
(56:27):
ask and what eurz. They may say yes that when
Orlando said yes, they end up doing the deal. We
know that they're going to take a different look Memphis
is this season and moving forward now that Taylor Jenkins
is no longer there. But when you have an opportunity
to get that many picks and you have to give
up your third leading scorer, you know, like I mean,
(56:49):
Desmond Baine is a real nice player, but man, I mean,
this is this is what the You know, the Timberwolves
gave up for Rudy Gobert right, you know, like four
first round picks, and that was tough to sweet the
nick right franchise change, Like it's just all right, I.
Speaker 3 (57:06):
Get it, but it's a lot of a lot of
those eggs in that basket.
Speaker 1 (57:10):
Yeah, it's the Memphis side of it is where I
come out, unless you just decided or But there's always
stuff behind the scenes, right when whenever we we have
a big move, like when Tibbdeau got fired, like well
we'd hurt rumblings that they're not necessarily getting along. Leon
Rose isn't exactly enamored with the fact that he doesn't
use anybody beyond one or two players from the bench
(57:32):
that he assembled, the players bristling at the minutes played. Again,
you know, by by time you're at game one hundred
that you're done. So there's always back channel stories. So
like you know how much Desmond Bane might have had
a little bit of clout and say of hey, I'm
done with this as well? Man, what it all bear out?
Because he's a guy with four more years on his
(57:53):
deal is the thing, right, as you know, he's a
guy that's on a recent extension as well.
Speaker 2 (58:00):
I just think that Memphis got a deal, just like
you were trading cards, right, somebody's going to give you
an offer, You're like, I'm not going to get a
better deal like this. I like this player, I like
this card very much, but the deal is too good.
I just have to I just have to do it.
People putting their house up for sale, let's see what
we can get for it, and then when somebody gives
them an offer that they can't refuse. I almost feel
(58:22):
like that was the case with Memphis in this situation.
For Orlando, if they feel that Desmond Bain is the
missing piece that they need, and I'm not going to
disrespect the guy who's almost averaged twenty points per game
and the kind of came from out of nowhere to
become an NBA name, it just seems like it's a
very very heavy price. And now Memphis can go in
(58:43):
a lot of different directions if they want, with John
Morant and Jaron Jackson as their foundation pieces.
Speaker 1 (58:50):
You know me, I like big swings. We'll talk about
a name that's been circling around in the trade market
here coming up next, as well as a look at
the NBA Finals. Reminder, you can stream this show. All
all are Fox Sports Radio shows live twenty four to
seven in the new and improved iHeartRadio app. Just search
Fox Sports Radio in the app to stream us live.
And one of the newest features in the app is
that you can select Fox Sports Radio as one of
(59:11):
your presets, just like presets on a radio dial. Be
sure to preset Fox Sports Radio at the iHeart Radio app.
It'll always pop up at the top of your screen. Yeah,
a guy in battled with a lot of big shots
in media, is on the trade market. What's his value
in all of this? We'll talk about it next. He's
day in on Mike and this is Fox Welcome back
in Fox Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Radio. We'll get back
(59:33):
into the trade wins in the NBA Desmond Main heading
off to Orlando. But we need to punctuate and put
the crossthts dot theis on the charity shot part of it,
And that's the underscore here is that there is a
charity component. Now David on Twitter saying, hey, you know,
(59:56):
you guys know it is all for charity. It's like, Okay,
I know it exists, but don't know the entire history.
We talked a little bit with Chris Purffett on it.
So Dan, as you are the newsman, may make you know,
cleaning this up for us finding the source material as
to how that five dollars shot gets broken down.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
Well, again, like we were talking about bucket list, and
then I thought going to Omahon watching baseball, but Perfet
took it right into the bars, you know, right into
the you know, to the local establishments and brought the
jello shot board up.
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
What we found out this is according to.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
K E TV in Omaha, who did the story earlier
this week, saying that for each five dollars shot that
is sold by the winning fan base, a dollar fifty
will go back to food banks that are affiliated with
that school. Then another fifty cents off of those five
dollars of each jello shot sold donated to a surprise
(01:00:54):
Omaha based nonprofit. So there is money that is going
back into the communities. And for the school that wins,
they get to donate to a charity that is affiliated
with their.
Speaker 1 (01:01:06):
All right, does it go into nil or any of
that fun stuff. I'm curious all the shots actually get
doled out, because that's an interesting part, or if it
just becomes a bit of a donation because even if
you do that, unless you say all of this better
go to the food banks or the other charity, you
still have a lot of profit. Even when you take
(01:01:26):
personnel and liability insurance off of that five dollar cost,
and there's still three dollars minus whatever your costs are.
Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
And the shots that are at this at Rocos are
pre made by a company that says they have one
hundred and twenty thousand pre made shots set aside for
this event. So they make one hundred and twenty thousand
pre made jello shots. Jot Shots is the name of
the company that makes the shots. That's what they've had
(01:01:54):
set aside for the week plus of action in Omaha.
Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Yes, you fans say only that many doubt us.
Speaker 1 (01:02:01):
Well, that means any graves from Cain's and all those
guys better get back to work. That's Chris Prefett at
Chris Purfett where you find him Pride to Detroit. You
hear him on the Network Update a little bit later on.
He'll be on with Hartman and Husky coming up in
a half hour from now. Let's start our attention back
to the NBA, though, Dan with Desmond Maine going in
(01:02:23):
and opening the marketplace as it were, You've set a
very high bar. I mean, we've had Ilo. He's been
reading some tweets talking about, well, compare this trade that trade. Whatever.
It's always going to be measured by what Dallas and
La did with Luka Dancic. People seem to forget that
Anthony Davis is a pretty damn good player in all
of this. He's not an ancillary part. But the point
(01:02:46):
is well taken. One of the guys that's in the
marketplace and looking to change locales, something he didn't want
to do in season. This last season we would find
out is Kevin Durant that he didn't want to move
and didn't want to lead Phoenix in the middle of
the season, which is kind of laughable. I can go
to a better place, I go back to Golden State.
Now I don't want to go back there. I don't
(01:03:07):
want to go to potentially win this year. Now I'm
gonna ride out what I'm doing here in Phoenix and
then we'll look into the off season. Now, the betting
favorite is the Miami Heat as they look to reset.
You've got San Antonio and Houston the other teams that
are I guess on his short list. In other words,
he's tired of paying state income tax of what he's
(01:03:28):
doing as he goes through in that process. But you
heard the promo from Smith and I discussing it a
little bit because he's been rumored as a potential fit
in New York with the Knicks in their next iteration
and run up coming off the Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
Is what is Kevin durant in terms of moving the
needle at this point is becomes and what do I
(01:03:51):
have to give up going back the other way?
Speaker 3 (01:03:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
And that's what I think it's been interesting in all
of this is because the Spurs have been the team
they're in the list of five, now they're in the
list of three. It's basically known that they are not
going to trade the second overall pick, and I that's
not a shocker, that's not anything that's surprising by any means.
(01:04:14):
We kind of know that, and it wouldn't be a
fair trade. Why would san Antonio do that? But the
pick that they have at fourteen is on the table
for any team, and san Antonio has a plethora of
young players that would satisfy at least I think could
help satisfy what Phoenix wants in it, but because.
Speaker 1 (01:04:31):
They did a great job when they brought in Dearon
Fox of not having to get rid of really much
of anything, so it kept a core in place for
whatever the next.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
Yes, Devin Biscell, Keldon Johnson, other pieces that they could
move as part of a deal. So the Spurs really
kind of makes sense on that level, Mike. But if
you're talking about just on the heels of this main deal,
going to the Heat would seem like it maybe a
better option if you wanted to try to advance in
(01:04:59):
the playoff, to try to make a run in the playoffs.
But I just have no idea on what Kevin Durant
ever wants and what he wants to do if he
went to Houston. And I know Kevin Durant is not
top five player in the NBA that we look at,
and at one point he was either SCOO or one
in people's eyes. But you then would have a state
(01:05:21):
that would have Cooper Flag and Dallas, Victor Webbin Yama
and San Antonio and Kevin Durant in Houston. That would
be pretty crazy for Texas basketball. Not even went to
the Spurs would be even crazier for all loaded. They are,
but I just feel that if it is advancing to
a further spot in the playoffs or a chance to
win another ring, that the Heat would seem to be
(01:05:44):
the option, just because of how.
Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
Not loaded the East is.
Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
Yeah, part of it is the curiosity of what he
wants to be, because we know he's not the vocal leader. Right,
It's to go out and play and just get after it.
And we've these different iterations. The term super team got overused,
but the team up aspect of it. They've tried it
in Phoenix, didn't work, and now it goes to the
(01:06:10):
next iteration. Now San Antonio has got a roster that's
interesting in a million different ways, especially with Victor Wenbinyama
doing what he's done this offseason. I want to write
a book about that, Like you know, it's it parallels
some of the get off the grid, go find yourself
kind of things that Aaron Rodgers was mocked for. Yet
(01:06:30):
Victor Wenbinyama because he's twenty one and hasn't there twenty
two and hasn't said anything else. It's interesting, fascinating soul
in search of self discovery, very interesting how we portray
the two different things and obviously Rogers didn't win any
fans with a lot of his commentary about other things.
(01:06:51):
But it all gets lumped together.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
I guess see, well Victor Wanama stinks, then that'll come
into focus.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
But right now he's you know, with the bloods out
hopefully behind him.
Speaker 2 (01:07:02):
Right the trajectory is just sky high.
Speaker 1 (01:07:06):
It try to get health right and then body mind,
spirit whatever, playing some soccer, running and hanging out with
monks for those unaware in this process, but you look
at the defending now Rookie of the Year Castle and
what they have built. Curious to see what kind of
ask you would have for Kevin Durant, because you have
to do the silly thing in the NBA with the
(01:07:28):
salary matches in all of these kinds of things. So curious,
but one of many veteran players in the marketplace, I'd
be remiss because Kevin Durant, who does love to traverse
social media. Dan, what did you think of his response
to one of the stories that blew up on Friday
night Game four, the Finals with Steven A. Smith playing
(01:07:49):
a little bit of solitaire. Now, he took to social
media to say, hey, it was it a commercial break?
There's still video evidence that gameplay was going on, as
you have one of your loud voices and in our
business former Fox Sports Radio colleague here, I did a
couple of spots with him, a lot of arguing, not
a lot of Yeah, not a lot came out of it.
(01:08:10):
Certainly I don't have that contract that he does, Otherwise
I'd be playing Solitaire while you smoke right now.
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
I had nothing but good interactions with Stephen A. Smith
when he was with us here at Fox Sports Radio,
so I don't have anything negative to say at all.
Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
He brought me on to argue, so that's what were.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
Okay, Well, that's in that case. I think that it's
an easy target. I think anybody that's been in a
situation where you're at a game, maybe it is, maybe
it is a time out, maybe whatever the case is,
it's not the not the best look when you have
the weight of your words being there.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
But there have been a few blowouts where.
Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
I've played games on my phone just waiting for the
clock to wind down. Maybe not a competitive Game four
of the NBA Finals, but I do remember a blowout
Game two of the NBA Finals in two thousand and
seven where I'm like man, when is this game going
to get over with? You know, just what do you have?
I think it was like it was like one of
those like breaker games, you know where you move the block.
Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
Yea, I had the.
Speaker 2 (01:09:17):
BlackBerry sort of you know, the rotating ball where you
can move back and forth. But the point being is
he's an easy target, and I think it allowed fans
to pile on Stephen A. Smith has said enough stuff
to prove of maybe not being as locked in, but
I don't think that matters.
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
They don't pay him for They.
Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
Pay him not an accuracy contest. This isn't a hey,
I've got to get the ball in the hole in
four strokes kind of yes. He just open mouth says
things and people react like it's look, what what do
you do here? Dan? Love hate me hopefully when we
have a better accuracy rating in terms of what we're doing.
But in the end, the only thing I don't want
(01:10:00):
you to be is indifferent. And for Steven A, he's
leaned into that. Correct like he got killed in an
episode of Law and Order spoiler alert, so General Hospital
shooting guys.
Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
I just think it was an easy target.
Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
He was an easy target and people love the pileon
and in fact, ESPN probably loved it to talk about him. Yep,
what is steven A going to say now that he
has watched.
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
What he had to say more than the ratings for
the game. I was going to say the show, but
then it is a game.
Speaker 3 (01:10:32):
I just it's not that I did have a problem.
I just don't don't care.
Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
Like that's that's the jet, right, He's got a curious
us that everybody got up in arms about. It's like, Okay,
I know that he was going to mispronounce a guy's
name or have someone from a former team from fifteen
years ago on the roster anyway, So what's the difference.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Hey, I know, I know of people who show up
at games at halftime, Mike sure, because the information that
they get that stephen A gets is from the players
and the coaches in the locker room or via text.
So steven A breaking down Game four isn't what he does, right,
(01:11:12):
He's not gonna tell you. That's why Kendrick Perkins is
supposed to be there. That's probably why they should have
a coach on their panel to break down what is happening,
because that is not what steven A does.
Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
So Steven A's not going to tell.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
You how you need to, you know, get SGA more
shots or free things up from Tyrese Haliburton. That's not
what he does.
Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:11:30):
What he'll do probably talk to Rick Carlisle after the
game or talk to a player after the game, find
out or via text and do that. But that's not
what he does. And I think that's what people also
don't understand. But it's yeah, it's not the end. I'll
be all to make him watch forty eight, the entire
forty eight minutes of the game, because that's not the
analysis that he gives.
Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
He's the guy sitting there with the giant or stirring
the batch of sauce that's going on to your spaghetti later. Yeah,
he ain't there to make the meal correct. He's Dan Byer.

communication regarding his contract and his future with the team. Hendrickson,
who led the NFL with seventeen and a half sacks
(01:12:46):
last season, wants a long term extension and did not
participate in off season workouts or last week's many camp.
Big trade today in the NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies reportedly
trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for
Kentavious Caldwell, Pope Cole Anthony for unprotected first round draft
(01:13:08):

can imagine, social media reaction to this deal, particularly the
four unprotected first round draft picks, has been somewhat notable.

actually do that too. We celebrated my daughters and I yesterday.
Thanks to them. Thanks to my brothers and friends for
checking in for our global audience. We appreciate you take
(01:15:57):
us with you as you traverse the globe on the
eye Heart Radio app. Thanks to Dan. We've had a fun,
spirited hour plus nearly two hours as we go through,
as we got the US open in the background, Rory
McElroy just shaking hands, kissing babies. Sixty seven. You think
he'll be in a better mood when he meets with
the media.
Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
I don't think it matters. I mean if he had again.
This goes back to his comments that he had made
earlier this year he wanted three things in his career,
a Master's win, an Olympic gold medal, and another road
win in the Ryder Cup. He got the Masters. Obviously,
there's going to be a letdown from that. There's no
way that you can reach that high. He wanted to
(01:16:39):
get out of town on Friday night. It's probably why
he played so well today because he just wanted to leave.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
Sixty seven maybe the round of the day as well.
Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
Good round.
Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
Yeah, so nobody else is in really in red numbers
Xanderschoffley's two underpower through eleven holes, but that also then
tells you that the leaders are probably going to have
just as difficult as time. But if someone gets in
his own hobland, goes out and fires sixty six, that
should well be enough to win, just because of the
(01:17:07):
pressure of a US open on on the likes of
Sam Burns, Adam Scott, and JJ Spahd.
Speaker 1 (01:17:13):
Talking a little bit of history. When you look at
Scott and Steve bringing up a lot of records, the
numbers like I've always been that guy. I'm less of
that guy because now stuff through Ai gets spit out.
So you know, he's the first player to do this,
because we're seeing that in the NBA Finals a lot.
It's like, really, that's that's where we're setting bench. Like
(01:17:34):
you know, we talk about O'Connell coming off the bench, McConnell,
and it's like, oh, he's the first ten five five
guy off the bench, Like this is this is where
we're taking things now.
Speaker 3 (01:17:43):
It reminds me of all other words.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
When Caitlyn Clark broke the scoring record not to make
that transition in college, but then all of a sudden
we found out that.
Speaker 3 (01:17:50):
There were four other scoring records that she had to break.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
There was a men's there was a there was a
woman's D one that when it wasn't D one, then
there's all divisions like, alright, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:18:02):
Was happy she was back because I think we had
some metrics coming off of those three point shots of
how fast she reacclimated herself with the scoring column.
Speaker 2 (01:18:10):
I think yesterday, and I say this without trying to
be dramatic, I think it was her most important WNBA
game that she's played in her career. And the reason
I say that is because you beat the liberty unbeaten
coming back from your injury where you kind of let
the people go without for a while, and now it
just builds up. It's shown that she's gotten better even
(01:18:32):
as a player. You come back in off of those
that two week rest and now she's a force, now
the fever ra force. We knew the fever were better,
but now it's like, Okay, is this the point that
she arrived at? Yes, I didn't watch yesterday aside from
the highlights because I was watching golf, but I would
say from everything that I've read on social media, it
(01:18:54):
sure feels either it was a pretty heavy win, and
I think that this launches the league and that's why
I think it's her most important game is wait.
Speaker 1 (01:19:02):
For her to get back and comes out with a
big performance, a big w Now, best of three NBA Finals,
we've had myriad storylines that we've beaten into the ground. Okay,
see nine and a half point favorites for Game five
and now back to a plus a minus six hundred
for the series. Dan, I'm just going to say.
Speaker 2 (01:19:21):
This, I would be shocked if a week from now
we aren't talking about Game seven later on that night,
can't wait. I think that that's what this is destined.
Speaker 1 (01:19:31):
For, Absolute chaos in sues Enjoy. We'll have full breakdown
