Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, good morning, good morning. This is Project NIL with
Daniel D. Bernadinas. I'm Anthony Gargano and he's Danny d
Dad and aunt the sports dad, and together it's Project
ni L where we look at youth sports, everything that
(00:24):
has to do with youth sports and high school preps,
some college stuff when it comes to NIL, and we
try to be kind of an all purpose shop for
you for an hour where we get to dive into
this world that's exploding across the nation. I know, I'm
a sports dad and I have two boys that play
(00:47):
in a variety of sports and we love it right
like we're a sports creates country and so our kids
are into it and the world has changed, the landscape
has changed from that. So here we try to kind
of dive into keep you, keep you kind of abreast
of what's going on, and want to be a sounding
(01:08):
word for you. We want you to, you know, ask
us questions, and you know we're parents and I'm a
parent and I know all kinds of when it comes
to expenses and trying to navigate it, it's pretty wild.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Good morning, Danny dvad.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
What's going on and how are we doing today?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Were too?
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Man?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Are you ready? I'm ready to kick it? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Man, I had my shot of expresso today, so I'm well,
I'm ready to go.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
How is your week? And the uh? And that Penn
Charter for the people don't know Penn Charter.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Is it the oldest school in the country or the
oldest schools in the country?
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Worth, oldest school in America? Fourth oldest in America. Wow,
And the oldest Quaker school in the world.
Speaker 5 (01:52):
So a lot of history there sixteen eighty nine, you know,
being established before you know, the United States was actually
you know, really established though. It's a really really cool, uh,
really cool place. Tons of history and and a lot
of tradition there.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
That's wild fourth oldest school in the country. That's amazing.
All right.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Big news in the world of nil, the world of
college football, the spring portal will.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Be no more.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, it's it's huge.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
It's really helpful I think for kids, college coaches.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
You know, you know, having two portals.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
There was one for people who don't know historically since
they started this you know NIL phase and you know
kind of getting changing something to transfer rules, there was
two portals, one in January and one in the spring
for football and it's allowed kids to go into the
portal and for teams, you know, to reconstruct and navigate
(02:53):
during that time. But it really it hurt the coaches
because and it hurt the high school athletes, but it
hit their coach is because the instability. Who knows, right,
if a kid didn't like where he was after springball,
they would jump into portal, you know if they so
coaches could lose depth. They didn't really understand what their
roster was going to look like. So it was just
so much instability. It was really tough. And then coaches
(03:14):
would wait to see what the portal will look like
in the spring, and that would hurt a lot of
high school recruitment. People will wait and see to see like,
all right, what guys are gonna come in, who's unhappy?
Let's see how we can change our roster. And they
had they played the game, but every coach I talked.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
It really didn't like it.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
It was very it was very difficult to navigate for
them with all the uncertainty every year.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Well, one of the issues was too you couldn't twice.
It was like imagine the NFL dealing with free agency
twice a year.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
That's exactly what it is. It's free agency twice. It
was twice. So it's huge that the NCAA is seeing
this and realizing it was an issue. And it was
hurting again, hurting the high school kids because people had
to wait. You had to wait and see what You
didn't know what your roster looked like, so you will
recruit less kids because you did not know the unknown
of what your roster's going to look like after you know,
(04:10):
after January and then after you know, April when they
would open back up and the right direction.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
And the issue too was was salary cat dad, like
you know, talking to some gms in college football. You
know you got you got your cap, and the problem
with the portal was like you get a kid, you're
praying that a kid doesn't try to renegotiate because the
(04:36):
kids have all the power, which is great, but it
also leads to you kind of double down. Like so
kids could come back and go, well, you know what,
I want more money, so they can they can hit
you up twice. They can hit you up in January
and then they can hit you up again in the spring.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I got an offer I sent you was calling me.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I mean you know, so there was two high leverage
situations and you know it was driving people crazy.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Yeah, imagine the starting quarter graph gets hurt in the
spring and then the backup's like, well, I'm gonna transfer
unless you pay me more money. Right, So that type
of leverage the kids were you're utilizing or you know,
these nil agents, it really.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Was.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
It was a tough time to navigate for a lot
of these coaches and even the kids.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
Right.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
It was a lot of pressure and it pushed them
to try to.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
You know, play this game and it's difficult. So them
limiting to the.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
One in January, now, we need them to do that
after Right now, it opens up January second, I believe
something they proposed. So it's going on during the National
Championship Series, So I mean we should.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
January second to eleventh is the window as it stands.
But I guess they're gonna meet in October and they're
gonna look to try to amend the dates a little
bit because again, you were I talked about this. You
can't you it's gotta be after the season. You can't
(06:06):
have it, like it's crazy, you know, everybody getting going
to the portal before the seasons you know, during the playoffs,
you're a backup for a team that's in the playoffs
and you're gonna go into the portal roll.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
I mean, that wasn't cool.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
It happened last year with Penn State with their backup
quarterback who played a lot of snaps because he was
a really good runner, so they would get him informations.
But he knew Drew Allow was coming back, so he
was uncertainty for him, Like he wanted to stay with
the team, but if he didn't get into portal then
he would he would lose opportunities, he would lose money.
So they really forced his hand to transferring and leaving
(06:42):
his team when he was in the final four.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
So yeah, which he's insane.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
It's terrible. Put It really puts the kids in a
tough situation. They don't want to leave, but if they wait,
the money drives up or other people take their opportunities
and take those spots. So it really put those kids
in a buying who worked really hard to work towards something,
and now you're in the final four, your college football
playoff team, and you have to make that decision do
(07:07):
I stay, do I leave? Do I try to ride
this out, but it really affects you financially, affects you
where what spots are available. So I'm hoping when they
meet in October that they push that date back a
little bit so after the season ends.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Well, it just makes sense.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Let's let's dive into the NIL world a little bit.
Who negotiates. Let's talk about you know what's funny. I
was with a parent. It's not at a high school
football game, and one of the defensive ends is going
to Ohio State, and you know, like, well, you know
(07:43):
the parent.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
First thing on the parent mouth is.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Oh man, that kid got a boat load the gun
to Ohio State. Like it's in the front lobe of
every parent. Can you we gotta step back for a second.
How does it work work where you're negotiating this stuff?
Who's doing it is in attorneys, it's agents. I work
(08:09):
with an agency athletes first and they're just starting their
NIL kind of.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Part of their practice.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
But there's a lot of other ones, Like I heard
about these street agents that will come out and they're
negotiating deals. And I know you've you've done it, You've
been part of NIL deals, significant ones.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
So how does it work?
Speaker 5 (08:35):
Yeah, I mean you have to bridge that conversation with
the school and a lot of times the schools have
people who are designated for that right for their program
and just opening dialogue and talking about it people, anyone can.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Really do it.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
There's no really rules to it, which is a scary thing,
but I would recommend you know people that have some
knowledge in it, you can reach out to different I
think there's agents that do this for a living that
you know they're going to get a percent, but it's
worth it because they're going to make sure you get
the money right. There's a lot of times where people
were negotiated and family friends or these handlers right or
people who have been you know, tag along and they're
(09:09):
working and they think they have X, but it doesn't.
It doesn't come to fruition right because they didn't do
it the proper way. So you need to make sure
it's really documented properly, that you're getting it in the contract,
when the payments are going to happen, how they're going
to be spread out, you know, the payment schedule.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
All that is really important.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
And anyone thinks they can negotiate it because they have
access to these people at these universities, but you really
should look to professionals or have some type of lawyer
draw it up and look at some precedents and really
look at the landscape and see how you go about
this process because people have gone stiff, right, they think
they've been promised certain things, and you know, you know,
(09:48):
if it's not writing, if it's not laid out in
a contract, you don't always get paid. And that's happened.
And you know, you saw it last year with the
kid at I think it was U and l V.
He held out he didn't play because he was promised X. Yeah,
and then you know, but they didn't do it the
right way, and then the university, you know, they said, well,
look we don't we don't want to commit to this,
and you know it's a he said, she said, type
(10:10):
of our deal. But in today's world and how it's changing,
there is professionals for it. Like you said, sports first,
there's a lot of different agencies that are getting involved
in it.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
And again it's a huge business.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
So more and more of these agencies that were more
locked into professional sports or dipping their foot into this world.
And like I said, it's like when you're looking at
those agents and you have a child that potentially became
an nil money I would say, treat like a recruiting process, right,
I ask a lot of questions, like we talked about
last week. Understand like you know, Roger Belt said, when
(10:42):
they went here, they looked at the coaches, how long
they've been there for?
Speaker 4 (10:45):
You know, what's it like off season?
Speaker 5 (10:47):
How it's like, So really dive into these agents the
same way you would be lucking into a school.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Do you.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Know when you're a part of stuff because I don't
know that people understand. And there's a salary cap and
then there's the nil money on top of that supplemental
stuff where you know you kuld you know, could get
you know, you're a big time, big time recruit, you know,
because everybody's gonna get paid, you're gonna get something.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
But if you're the big.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Time recruit, it allows them to kind of circumvent the
cap in a way.
Speaker 5 (11:21):
Yeah, So starting this year, the schools are allowed to
pay you officially through them.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Right.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
There was a lot of legal battles and legislation that
went through, but the schools have a twenty million dollar cap.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
But that's for all sports.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
So we kind of talked about this last week, like
certain sports that don't have football, you know, and they
have access to the twenty million, they have a huge
advantage in the other sports. But there's also a collective,
and a collective is money from boosters outside. You know,
maybe you know Alumps can don't donate to the collective,
or you know, big brand Pepsi can donate to your
(11:55):
collective if your relationship with them, and through that collective,
it will now have oversight by Lloyd, which is a
third party, and Deloitte will say, Okay, justify why you're
paying this kid x, you know, and look there's a
lot of gray.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
A righte some services performed by the player, right like,
so if if the quarter of this quarterback, who's going
to get all this money because this big lucrative deal,
He's going to be the spokesman for you know, some
chevy dealer, right like, you know.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
Exactly, and you can justify through social media following that's
the easiest way to justify, right. So if you're it's
really important now if you're if you're you know, a
top one hundred kid or just a kid in general,
you need to really make sure your social media is immaculate.
You're not doing anything controversial on it, and you're really
pushing your brand. It's very important that you represent your brand,
(12:48):
and you're creating a brand at a young age to day,
which is crazy to say, but like these posts that
go back, it's important that you grow your following, that
you're interactive with these social media platforms so you really
can maximize your dollar amount because that's an easy way
to justify say hey, I have a following, and we're
going to advertise to my following.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
And you see these kids have huge, huge numbers, like
huge followings some of these kids. It's it's wild, but
you know it's interesting. And I brought this up to
a parent last night. In fact, his son is a
sophomore in high school. Dude, he's six', five two ninety.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Two he's a.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Tackle he uh he he's a kid's stut right like.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Stut he's, mean he's just he's a. Baby he's a.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Sophomore So i'm talking to his father And i'm, like you,
know you got you have your, huddle you have YOUR
i need your tape because not even you, know school's
gonna start looking now because he's a sophomore and teams
always need. Tackles i'm, like, listen you, know you got
to tell him his social media is very. Important he
(13:57):
was REALLY i, go, yeah he needs His instagram.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Page it's got to be done.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Right you got to monitor what's on, it, Right like
you know they're gonna go there first to try to
connect with you.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Guys, yeah one hundred.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Percent it's really important that they want to, see like
they're doing deep dives and you now they're.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
SERIOUS i mean they were recruiting you and they were
doing their due.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
Diligence, before but now it's a, business, right there's so
much money behind, it so it's even a larger. Investment
so it's so important that you're making sure and that's for,
ANYONE d, ONE d, TWO d. Three these, coaches there's
a lot of, people, right it's so, competitive so you
really have to make sure that you're making sure you're
doing it. Right on your, side you know that you're
(14:39):
not having you, know random posts or just or dumb things.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
That you know you're and your.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
Friends it's it's fine to show your, world but also
you just have to be strategic about it and really
know that someone is going to be looking at it.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
Sometime if you're an, athlete, right and there's a lot of.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
CLASSES i try to educate our student athletes on know
how people come in and educate our student athletes.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
About what colleges are looking. For what are?
Speaker 5 (15:02):
Posts you, know what are hit hit words if you
want to kind of grow your, brain but also like
what are things that turn people?
Speaker 4 (15:08):
Off? Right and it's in such a competitive market you
need every advantage you can. Get so really having that.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Uh that social media platform and being conscious of it
and mindful of what you're posting is so important.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Today, yeah, YEAH i highly suggest that parents are on
top of. That you've got to be on top of.
That you've got to see what's out. There you got
to see what's what's coming in with your. Child. Uh
and again for all that. Stuff and you know this
works in every. Sport, right if you're a, girl your
(15:43):
daughter is a big time soccer lacrosse, player you know
they're gonna be all, There they're gonna be looking at
their social. Media and, again, uh social media is such
an important, way such an important tool and a way
for nil even in high school because you see the
proliferation of high school athletes now that's getting get eyel.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Money for, sure and it could push you either.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
Way, right if they have two recruits that they're looking,
at that could be a deciding.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Factor.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
Right so it is a, tool but it also is
a weapon at times because it can hurt, you, Right
so it's really important that you are monitoring it and
that you're doing a good job with, it and you're
again it's kind of crazy to think you have to
be strategic as a fifteen year old kid about what you're,
posting but it matters at the end of the. Day
so if you're in this sports, world and, again because
it's now a, business you need every advantage you can.
(16:32):
Get SO i stress to the kids to be strategic about.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
It just be aware that.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
This is something that someone's going to look at and
even in your job later down the. Line, right people
are now looking at social media when you want a
job outside of, sports right to kind of do background
checks on you to make sure you're the right person
for their. Company SO i think it's so important that
parents are aware of it and that we're just realizing
it is a, tool but it also can hurt you
at the same time if you're not.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Careful All, right let's do, this let's take a quick
time out and we'll come. BACK i have, questions, right
So i've accrewed some questions some people that are listening

Com all, Right, DANNY i got some questions for, Parents
so let's go to my Buddy. John john hits me
(20:33):
up during the week and he's talking about his, daughter
who is a soccer player who's not getting a lot of,
time and he's upset at. Her at the time she's
getting she's able to travel soccer. Team apparently she's pretty.
Good it's she's twelve and he's thinking about switching.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Clubs what's your advice about switching?
Speaker 5 (20:59):
Teams that's, happened you, know it's, tough, right the competitiveness is.
GROWING i think it's always important to start with a
conversation right in that TWELVE i would try to push
the daughter maybe to have a conversation if she, can you,
know we got to you, know get some life skills
and push her to you, know have some uncomfortable. CONVERSATIONS
i think it helps them later in life to kind
of initiate. It or the parent at that age could
(21:21):
could step in and you, know, respectfully you, know ask
what's some areas they need to work, on and you,
know as there a path to more minutes for?
Speaker 4 (21:30):
Them right if if she DOES, x, right will there
be a result for? It right if she?
Speaker 5 (21:34):
Improves so looking for those areas improvement and then asking
like what the path look like for, them BECAUSE i
think it's always important to kind of evaluate the, environment,
right like if you're, learning if you're if you see
your your son or daughter becoming, better you, know their skills,
Growing if it's a great, culture.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
The minutes at that, age you know are.
Speaker 5 (21:56):
Important but also like if they're growing as you know
a player and and a, PERSON i think you kind
of stick it out, RIGHT i mean you kind of
got to evaluate all of. It you have to kind
of step back and give it a good. Look, now
if there's not a path, forward, RIGHT i think playing is, important,
right so THEN i think it's it's okay to start
looking for other. Options but you have to preface that
(22:18):
with AM i just leaving to be in the same?
Role is it not the culture going to hurt? He
or is she gonna have to you, know the environment
making you, know with new people and the. Travel so
there's a lot, of you, KNOW i think things that
go into. It BUT i would definitely start with a
conversation with the coach and just really be you, know
be honest and transparent about. IT i think you know
she needs more playing, time BUT i understand you know
(22:41):
your vision and you know what you're trying to build.
Here what are some things that we can do to
improve and what that path looks like?
Speaker 4 (22:47):
Too more?
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Minutes well it makes. Sense. Listen you're the advocate for your.
Child that's it right.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Now there's a fine line between being that parent who's
a pity to we're d right.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Neo coaches don't like, uh and not sticking up for your.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Child and you gotta be realistic with how good they are, level.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
They're where they're.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
At the other issue that comes into, play and this
is SOMETHING i hear about all the, time especially in
baseball daddy, ball like when you don't have pay, coaches
like these travel soccer clubs a lot of times are you,
know these are paid, clubs especially the travel. Clubs they're
it's it's not like your their. Parents but when you
(23:34):
have parents and daddy, BALL i can tell you baseball.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
Stories oh the worst baseball is.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Horrible we're just now kind of getting out of the
daddy ball.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
Thing, yeah it's, tough AND i WOULD i would look
for that, too like kind of some red flags or you,
know like they're really poor, communication they're not really open
to these. Conversations if you if you notice a lot
of favoritism or it's not a great. Culture, right there's
some things that really are some red flags that you,
can you, know kind of step up and, Say, okay
it's time to move, on because there's gonna be, biases
(24:09):
especially like you, said and when there's not they're not
being pay they're just.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Volunteering there's gonna be.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
Bias there's gonna be, favoritism there's no way around. It
that's just human. Nature i'm not saying it's, right but
when you run into them in those. Situations and some
some fathers who are coaches are, great you, know they
make it even harder on their kid kind of sometimes
you know they well the father.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
COACHES i always use my kid as the as the
KID i yell.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
At LIKE i yell at it as You. Massimo i'm
constantly scraping at. It, massim get back off Defense lossim
run that. Out you're not running hard.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
Enough you, know because if you use him and you,
KNOW i let him. Know but it's, like you, know
in order to make sure that everybody is understands it
that the, kids if you're yelling at your own, kid you're.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Not you, know people would understand.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
That but it's a fine, line you, know it really,
is because you're, right like the favoritism, piece like you
want to make sure that you're not you, know there's
no favorite that you're as even as, possible and even
if you had that, objective sometimes it's. Impossible like you,
were a human nature comes. In we were on a baseball.
(25:24):
TEAM i mean this IS i mean he were very,
young he was this was EIGHT u and it was, ridiculous, right,
like so you had the coach and it was like
his neighbors and there were, kids and you, know there
was like complete favoritism toward the whole, thing, Right so
it was like eight NINE. U SO i remember leaving
(25:47):
the program FOR tenu And i'm, like, listen it is
not like it's all, Good Like i'm not upset or,
anything but this is not for, Us like we're gonna
go on a different program and we you, know sometimes
you got to go to a couple different, programs especially
at that age to find the right one for your
(26:08):
child where you think there's a fit.
Speaker 5 (26:10):
Agreed and that's the age you can kind of bounce around, easier,
right it's not really as. Noticed and AGAIN i really
think you have to look at the development of your
child and you can see, it right or they getting?
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Better.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
RIGHT a lot of that stuff matters because at that
age it's about growth and. Development and, again you need
to play because you need to get confidence and you
need to be in that environment and you need to
feel the pressures and you know the intensity of the.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
Sport.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
Right but also if they're, DEVELOPING i try, to you,
know way on the side of sticking out and go
and develop but, again like we talked, about there's gonna
be red flags that you can see straight, beforehand and
you can, notice and it's okay to look at other. Programs,
NOW i recommend as they get older and they get
into high school and transfer culture is.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
Big.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
Man we even joke around that there's a portal in you,
know The philadelphia area once season's.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
End, right it's wild in the high school.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Scene but, well that is my next question because you
don't want you, know the uge sports thing is one,
thing because, look there's there's a reason. Why you, know
in our, case it was a, position, right, like so
every you, know the coaches kid had to play, shortstop
even though the kid wasn't, good, right the neighbor was playing,
(27:21):
third the other neighbor was playing, first and the guy
across the street was playing, second Right, like so it's,
like come, on, man this is. Ridiculous so that's kind
of where we my decision was.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Made but high SCHOOL i see it.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Constantly now it's almost like a mini college where kids
are going to three and four high.
Speaker 4 (27:42):
Schools, yeah it's.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Wild, now transferring ONCE i totally understand. It and as
an ad Obviously I'm i'm in a, Minute SO i try,
to you, know say stick it out and you, know
gain the. Experience, now if you're a top kid and
you transfer, around look they're still going to take.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
It they.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
Might it might cause a flag for them because when
you get to that college level of. Recruitment but if
you're the average kid playing you, Know division three sport
or you know you're, good you're playing A division two
sport and there's two, guys.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
But you've been to three schools in four.
Speaker 5 (28:13):
Years i've talked to coaches where that is a deciding, factor,
Right so that three four, schools when you're bouncing around every,
year that's not helping your. Kid it's if they see
adversity to run. Away NOW i completely agree with sometimes
going to a school it's not the.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
Right fit and there's a time for.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
Change but you have to be very selective and do
your research to see you now you know what you're looking,
For so make sure when you're making that next choice
that you put all these factors. In you talk to,
coaches you've done your, research you've talked to the. Administration
you know what the team is in their, history and
you know what their depth charts look. Like so be
very informed when you make that, decision because you don't
(28:51):
want to be that person that's at three four. Schools
it really makes it, difficult especially for the middle of
the back. Kids they are good athletes and are going
to play in. College but, again it's it could it
could be a detriment at the end of. It if
you're on the board next to somebody else and there
at one school for four years and you might be
a little, better but they, say, hey if there's some,
adversity they might be gone because they've been to three four.
(29:13):
Schools that can hurt you in the recruiting. Battle SO
i support transferring if it's not the right. Situation BUT
i just think you really need to make sure you're
doing your due diligence before you start jumping around to, multiple,
multiple multiple. Schools maybe the next time you jumps, important.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Let me ask you, this because what's the relationship of,
position all? Right BECAUSE i mean the extremest, quarterback, right
because there's only one, quarterback and you, know if your
kids a, quarterback you know when uh SCHOOL x has
a quarterback that maybe is as sophomore and you're kids
(29:51):
a freshmen and you know all that, stuff and then
you have kids that are shortstops in baseball and you,
KNOW i mean it happens in lead guards in. Basketball
like position is important and if there is kind of
a block loockage when it comes to that, position how
do you handle?
Speaker 1 (30:12):
It?
Speaker 5 (30:13):
YEAH i, mean if the school's a great fit and
the culture is a great fit and you know the
values all, ALINE i, say you, know try to be
a chameleon and say. Work talk to the coach, Like
i'm open to trying other, positions, Right i'm open to. Learning,
obviously this is my. Passion this is WHERE i feel
Like i'm strongest. At and having that dialogue if they're, like, hey,
yeah you're just gonna be a backup for three years
(30:33):
and this is kind of how we see your, development
you have to make that, decision, right do You is
it worth it to wait out those three years to
it's your opportunity or is there a different paths for
you to grow as an? Individual you have to really
weigh a lot of different. Things and it's wild to,
say but a lot of people go into it and
to say they don't do their due diligence and that's
(30:53):
why they bounce around a. Lot so it's really important
to ask these questions and have difficult conversations, right really
put it to people because.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Sometimes people want to avoid those type of.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
Things AND i think it's important not to promise anything
to any kid when they're coming.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
In you have to earn, it.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
Right, obviously there's plenty of kids that you know are
talented and you wanted your, schools but you really have
to earn that. Spot SO i always tell our, coaches,
like you, know love them, up tell them where you see,
them be, honest but also say, hey, like we're not promising,
anything and that job of that kid in front of
you doesn't mean it's his job next. Year if you outwork,
them you, grow you, develop you do your. Thing the
(31:28):
best player is always going to. Play so the DEPARTMENT
i kind of try to always push, that.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
How do you view upper classmen and the younger kids coming,
in especially when you, have you, know a recruiting situation
like you were at the hot you were you were
At Saint Joe's, prep which is historically a top ten
to fifteen program in the country in, football and when
(31:57):
you got, it you, know a sophomore versus junior and
all that, stuff how do you navigate? It because, again
there's only. One there's only one, quarterback, right so that's
a big.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Deal, yeah for.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
SURE i always, say, like you, know the upperclassman has
the first shot at, it, Right you're always going to
give everybody an opportunity to win that.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Job so it's a.
Speaker 5 (32:17):
Little harder winning it as a as an. Underclassman but
at the end of the, day the best player has to.
Play that's always been our model and that and that
happened TO prep right plenty of times where you, know
people the young kids have won out. Spots they've played,
freshmen they've played, sophomores right there was.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
They've they've won those.
Speaker 5 (32:35):
Battles and that happens in the, summer that happens in the,
offseason in the weight, room that happens throughout the. Year
SO i always believe, in you, know give the person the.
Opportunity it's their job to. Lose, however if they lose,
it that's part.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Of that's that's.
Speaker 5 (32:50):
Life and you don't want to just, say, hey oh
you're a, senior you have to, start you know, that
because that's not that's not, life, Right so we try
to build life lessons through athletics and you, know giving
everybody the opportunity to prove, themselves giving them every opportunity
to grow and develop and be the best version of.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
THEMSELVES i love.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
IT i love it All, right let's take quick t o.
Man it's a fast. Hour, man there's so much to.

(34:38):
any questions during the week when you check it, out all, Right.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Dad one thing THAT.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
I think it is a great offshoot to kind of switching,
programs because we got on the subject of switching, teams
switching programs and whether it's youth sports programs for individual you, know, baseball,
soccer you, know you, name, lacrosse or high schools to even.
(35:05):
Colleges you got to communicate with the coach like you
brought up communicating with. Coaches and it's a tricky, situation
right because you, know you don't want to be that,
parent but sometimes you got to be right for.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Sure and it really the, level the you, know the.
ENVIRONMENT i think you have to figure out all these you,
know all these. FACTORS i think they all play into. It,
so you, know with the high school, LEVEL i, BELIEVE
i really think it's important when the, kids you, know
make that first, move, RIGHT i think it builds, trust you,
know it builds, respect you, know they, Understand it prevents some,
(35:43):
misunderstandings and it really gives you, KNOW i think it
gives the kids some, Growth it gives them to take the,
lead you. Know BUT i think also it was important
is when you had these, conversations. Right SO i always
try to instill a twenty four hour rule with the
parents because after a, game you're, heated.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Right something might not have gone your way, minutes you, Know.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
So twenty four hours before communication postgame.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Is that's a, great great thing to, adopt great rule to, adopt.
Speaker 5 (36:14):
AND i think it helps the, parents you, know get
a clear, head get your thoughts. Right don't just come
in hot because and he the, moment we're all competitive
and we want to, win and you, know you could
be fired, up so and you, know.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
Things can be. Misconstrued the coach could have had a bad.
Speaker 5 (36:27):
Day SO i just say a twenty four hour rule
to really sit on, it take your, time gather your
thoughts and be clear what you want to ask and
what you're asking, for, right because you don't want it
to blow. Up and everyone's everyone's you, know trying to.
Win it's not like anyone's out there trying to. Lose
SO i think it's very important to be strategic right
on how you address it and when you address. IT
(36:49):
i think people forget about the, win you, KNOW i,
think and then the win is very.
Speaker 3 (36:53):
Important, yeah it's a that's a great.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Point, listen there are, TIMES i, mean especially little LIKE
i don't, know the older they, GET i, think the
more understanding of the, World, LIKE i, think the clearer
the path, is if that makes any.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Sense when they're, younger especially with the.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Uh i'm just going back in my own mind thinking
about some of these, coaches these sports, dats these daddy ball.
Coaches oh my, god my blood would boil, that, like,
dude you.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
Don't know what you're.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Doing and it's hard right, like because some of these
coaches don't know what they're doing right. Now it's different
when you're at your. Level you have elite coaches and
elite prep, coaches and you, know there's a big difference
between that and some guy off the street where you're,
like oh my, god this guy doesn't even know what
(37:56):
a matchup zone.
Speaker 4 (37:57):
Is sometimes for.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Sure SO i, say you, know you have these conversations
and then when they're, young the parents have to have these.
Conversations so, AGAIN i think the win's. IMPORTANT i think
it's important to stay positive in. PUBLIC a lot of
people blow up on the sidelines or at the. Games,
again the, win and that's not always, helpful, RIGHT i,
think especially if you have knowledge of the. Sport you,
know you, say, hey Like i'm you, KNOW i just
(38:21):
want to help the team. Grow here's some, Suggestions, Right
i'm okay with that as long as it's done in
the right, environment because you, know you see these parents
freaking out on the, sidelines you, know, screaming, hollering and
that just doesn't help the, situation, Right and the parent
could be right at the core.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
Of what they are arguing about or.
Speaker 5 (38:39):
What they want to, see but if you do it
in that, moment it doesn't come across, right and they
can really, hinder you, know that, relationship.
Speaker 4 (38:46):
Especially if they're not a. Professional you, know it's not
their job to be a you, know they're.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
Volunteer they're going to hold, resentment, Right so we want
to continue to make this a positive. Impact SO i
think the win is what people overlook a, lot AND
i think that's super. Important SO i try to say
twenty four hour rule regardless of the age group and
on the, sidelines you, know try to be encouraging and, respectful,
right and then just set up a time to talk
(39:11):
and come with some. Solutions, right don't just come and
say you're doing xxxy. Wrong come with some solutions to,
help you, know fix the.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
Problem.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
RIGHT i think that's great.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
Advice it just just because it eliminates the ridiculous behavior that.
Happens it feels like on a nightly basis youth sports.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
Games oh, MAN i mean it's laughable, sometimes, Right but
again it's like we got to be the adults in
situation and we have to do what's best for the.
Kid and you, know even freaking out on the, sideline
that embarrass your, kid, right you could traumatize.
Speaker 3 (39:48):
Your kid on top of The, yes, yeah don't.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
Focus on the.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Win that's my biggest advice for that is to. Win
and that gets overlooked all the time In.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
Yeah that's a that's a great it's it's great, advice
just great. Advice like you don't want to went. Back
i've always thought that. NOW i ALWAYS i was always,
LIKE i, DON'T i don't want to make the. NEWS
i remember The phillies had a guy Named Mitch, williams
WHO i, love great, dude and he's freaking out of
his daughter's game and it went. VIRAL i don't want
(40:17):
to Be janet soprano. Anyway that's gonna do for this week's. Edition, Uh,
danny great, job, man, aesome you're the.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
Best Brief thank you for everyone back, There thank you
for all you.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Do all, right fellas are coming up next to see
that
