The Way Tire buy In should be The seventh and
final round of this twenty twenty four NFL Draft is
now underway. So we are coming down the stretch of course,
our countdown Montci to mister Irrelevant at two fifty seven.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
That will be the Jets pick.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
And it's hard to call mister irrelevant after what happened
two years ago, would brock Perdy being the last pick
of the draft and two years later later leading the
NFL in passing rating.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
So now all of a sudden, it is the name. Yeah,
it's got to be like the party pick.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I like it.
Speaker 5 (00:57):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
It cannot be mister, it just can't. All right with
the party pick.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
We've got the Jets, Let's see who they take, because
it is impossible for it to carry that name.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
Now, it's just it's not what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Okay, I have the perfect pick for the Jets, for
the party pick, for the party pick, because he's a
pretty guy.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Okay, And I'm talking.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
About my namesake, Sam Hartman, who is still the rage
with all the ladies on TikTok when Gaga over that
forty yard dash with that beautiful head of hair just
flowing along.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
He's still on the board right now.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Going to New York. And remember Aaron Rodgers. How much
longer is Aaron Rodgers going to be around? Maybe a
year or two. Sam Hartman in New York in a
Jets uniform would be a huge pr move for the Jets.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Actually, that's pretty brilliant.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
It's like you just said they got rid of Zach Wilson.
So it's just right now, Aaron Rodgers, what does your
future look like? He is a good at least we
think you would fit in a market like New I'm
into that.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I'm into that.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Let's see if they pull the trigger, because you know,
the Jets the last.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Big of the draft.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
I mean, it's not exactly like they got a bunch
of quarterbacks line out. So if the Jets are listen,
I know you are right now, I know you're busy
in the draft room. But come on, now, take Sam Hartman,
who is still on the board. All right, So they
are rifling quickly through the seventh and final round of
the NFL Draft. Coming up, Adam Kaplan's going to be
joining us. We got a lot of unanswered questions coming
(02:28):
out draft, so many I want to get to the
one that we'll obviously ask Adam about. But of all
the picks in this draft, the Michael Penicks trade. And
this is hard for me because I voted Pennix for
the Heisman Trophy. It was only the third time in
fourteen years that I've been voting for the Heisman that
my pick.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Is someone that did not win the Heisman.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
He led the University of Washington all the way the
championship came there. There was nothing to complain about outside
of the fact that he had four consecutive years that
Indiana ended by injury before he fe on prosperity and
health up in Seattle with the Washington Huskies. And I
can't wait for Adam Kaplan to me there is no
(03:10):
spin on this pick. There is no way you can
justify because if I said this once, I've said it
a million times when it comes to the draft, it's
not always about just who you take, it's about where
you take them. You could have gotten Michael Pennix much lower. Okay,
you say, well, wait a second here, we looked at
(03:34):
those eleven, twelve, thirteen picks. Right, you had Minnesota, you
had Denvering, you had the Raiders all possibly taking quarterbacks.
But why would you be thinking quarterback when you just
gave Kirk Cousins one hundred million guaranteed. It's one hundred
and eighty million dollar deal, but you gave them one
hundred million guaranteed, including ninety million up front. Why would
(03:57):
he even be thinking about a quarterback in the top
ten picks.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
I could not agree with you more.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Even though there are spins that people are throwing at me,
or they can throw at us, one of the things
is in two years, everybody's price is gonna go up
because right now the Falcons.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Aren't spending a lot of money.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Aside from Kirk Cousins, you know, Drake London, Jon Robinson,
they're all still young. So in two years, maybe they're
just wondering what's gonna happen with these players, and if
they want to just get rid of Kirk Cousins and
then go forward with Michael Pennix Junior.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
But even with that, I agree, Like, if I'm Minnesota,
I'm like, what was the point of this?
Speaker 6 (04:34):
Then?
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Why did you outbid for kirk Cousins? Why did you
take him away from us?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
There's so many question marks, like if if the Falcons
had questions about kirk cousins health, then why did you
sign him for what you did?
Speaker 4 (04:50):
We already know he's going through a.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Huge, huge injury at an age that is not ideal.
But yet you're the one who pulled the trigger, So
why did you do all of this? It really makes
no sense unless they're thinking, like in two years they
want to just kind of turn a new leaf. And again,
they're not paying anybody right now. Everybody else is still
so young on their squad.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Well maybe they don't have long term plans for kirk Cousins. Again,
Michael Pennix Junior will be twenty four years old coming
up on May eighth.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yes, twenty four years old on May eighth, just a lot.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
So that's how old he will be as a rookie
quarterback in the NFL. And if kirk Cousins ends up
playing the next four years of that contract and doesn't
have any injuries one, you probably will keep them after that.
And even if you then make the decision, all right,
(05:47):
we're going to move to Michael Pennix as he gets
to the age of twenty nine, you also have the
dilemma of a fifth year option on a first round
quarterback that you have to decide whether or not he's
in your future. It is conceived, yeah, that if kirk
Cousins is fully recovered from that Achilles injury and can
play healthy and productive for the Atlanta Falcons, that they
(06:08):
will have used to pick on a player that will
never play a game for this team. It is conceivable,
if kirk Cousins can stay healthy over the next four years,
the Michael Pennix junior will never actually see action outside
of taking a knee at the end of a route.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
I don't think that's what they're thinking.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
It has to be that they are thinking what happens
in two years. That has to be their mind right now,
with question marks surrounding what happens in two years.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
But said that was the same though we're looking, we're
looking to be contenders long term.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Wait a second, all right, well you know, so do
a lot of people, actually so to a lot of
teams right now feel like they're going.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
To be long term contenders. Really, it just makes no sense.
I am curious to know if this was.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
The plan all along, and if it was, why didn't
you tell Kirk Cousins this people, because his agent came
out and said, we were not told until they were
on the clock and they.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Made the call.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
And I don't see how this does not affect morale
with your brand new quarterback that you're giving a one hundred
million guaranteed to, how does this.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Not affect that.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
I remember a situation with the Chargers a few years
ago where Philip Rivers was, you know, getting along in years.
They hadn't had a lot of success, and they had
the seventh pick in the draft, and it was a
sixth or seventh pick in the draft, and there was
a lot of buzz that they were going to take
to Sean Watson, a lot of bus. No one was
(07:36):
thinking about Patrick Mahomes at that point, except apparently the Chiefs,
but Deshaun Watson was on everyone's radar and it was
you know, you could be picking a quarterback of the future,
and instead they took Mike Williams, the receiver who obviously
is no longer with the UH Chargers.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
By the way, The next pick was Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
You passed on him, but anyway, and you also passed
on Patrick Mahomes if you were going to go quarterback.
But I remember actually having Philip Rivers on the next
day saying that he was relieved that they realized, no,
we have to play for now.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
You're giving me another weapon.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
And the idea of wasting this pick, wasting a pick
on some quarterback of the future when I'm still here,
doesn't make a lot of sense.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Now, did it work? Not really?
Speaker 1 (08:21):
I mean, the Chargers actually did make one playoff run
after that, but Mike Wayns ended up being in and
out of the lineup constantly with injuries. But yeah, Kirk
Cousins and I love this that he and Pennix apparently
had some kind.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Of conversation conversation. Yes, again, that is what you're supposed
to do at that point. That is how you handle
it from that point forward.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Right, Kirk Cousins has got a lot of money in
the bank, got he just got a ninety ninety million
dollars put into his bank account. But again, if you're
Kirk Cousins, it's like I left Minnesota because you not
only paid me a lot of money, but you made
certain guarantees for me and then to blindside me.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Like this, this is not what I signed up for.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
I agree, like I don't.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I Kirk Cousins seems like everybody after you know, quarterback,
everybody loves Kirk Cousins. He just seems like such a
down to earth guy with a lot of money who
still shops at Coles. I mean, we all love that.
How does this not psychologically affect him? He wants to play,
He's not. He's not like, great, I just got a
lot of money and I'm gonna sit and be a backup.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
That's not what he wants. He wants to go out
and compete.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Especially last year, up until his injury, he was competing
with the Vikings. He was winning you know, primetime games.
That was his uh, you know, kryptonite for so long.
He was at such a high point until he got injured.
And I'm sure he just.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Wants to go back into that. And now he's like, so,
are you gonna get rid of me in like two years?
Is this the plan?
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Or is he gonna like swoop in in one year
and I'm just gonna have to teach him the ways.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Now he got a hundred million dollars. I mean, you know,
he can rest comfortably, but.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
I don't think he wants to rest comfortably, That's what
I'm saying.

know this, he knows NFL football.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Better than anyone. We bring on our insider, Adam Kaplan.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I'm not going to ask you about the Backstreet Boys,
but I am going to ask you about the Falcons
and Michael Pennick Jr. So, now that you've had a
couple of days to digest the most controversial pick in
this twenty twenty four NFL Draft, I'm sure you're trying
to figure out, like the rest of us, any sound
reason for this pick.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
What have you come up with?
Speaker 8 (12:27):
Well, guy's going to be with you, yes, So just
to give you an idea, I was doing television for
Sports Graad on Thursday night and I warned the producers
and powers it being also the talent, I said, guys,
there's gonna be some strange things happening tonight. I can't
tell you exactly what it's going to be, but they
got some head scratching moves. Get ready to pivot to
something crazy. I didn't think though, it was going to
(12:48):
be what the Falcons did at number eight. That I
was not thinking would happen. So yes, So basically I
checked into it because like everyone else, I'm like, what,
you can't be serious. So, first of all, by contract structure,
the Falcons literally cannot do a thing with Kirk Cousins
other than playing for a minimum of two seasons. So
unless he gets hurt, Michael Penix will not be playing
(13:11):
for two years. Michael Penix turns twenty four next month.
He'll be twenty six. If everything goes well with the
Kirk Cousins, he won't start a game until he's probably
twenty seven.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
So it's kind of like, Okay, well what are they doing?
Speaker 8 (13:24):
So they wanted Penix so bale effect, they had the opportunity,
as to understands, to trade down. They were so worried
about the Raiders and a couple other teams. As I
understand it, they're like, we're getting Penis. We're not going
to be screwed out of getting him for the future.
We understand Kirk Cousins is going to sit for at
least a couple of years. But it's a quarterback position.
These guys could play until their late thirties. Cousins, by
(13:46):
the way, turns thirty six soon, and that to summon up,
that's it, and that's where we're at now. I know
a bunch of people I spoke to in the NFL
from clubs.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
They scratch their head.
Speaker 8 (13:56):
Why would you want to sit your first round pick
for two seasons? And here's another thing, what if Cousins
plays incredibly well it's healthy.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah, you're not.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
Going to try.
Speaker 8 (14:05):
I mean now it'd be hard to trade him also
because of his contract in his age will be thirty eight.
Then I get the consternation because, by the way, the
lines makers before the draft started, had already picked the
Falcons to win the division the NFC South, over the
Buccaneers that won it last season.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Adam, was that.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
The plan all along though for Atlanta? Or was this
something decide it was the plan?
Speaker 5 (14:28):
I believe that. I believe it strongly.
Speaker 8 (14:31):
Now that video that's out there, let me this is
look you guys have me on. I'll explain how this works.
Arthur Blank, the Falcons owner, that video that's out there,
it cannot be that he didn't know that. It doesn't
work like that. So GM's telling me that they either
tell they're all along. They the owner has been inclued
in and what's going on, but they don't tell him
(14:51):
finally what it's going to be, usually till twenty four
hours before or the morning of. It's not like on
the clock they decide this stuff. This is never's happens.
It never us. Now what he can of tell him is, listen,
we looked at trade down possibilities. We weren't comfortable with
it that might have happened, and I know the video
set out there seems to be like, wow, he.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
Just found out that they're doing this. There's no way
that happened. I just want to put.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
That to sleep because that it doesn't work like that.
I've never heard that before that they wait to tell
the owner when they're on the clock.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
That's complete nonsense, because it also came out that his
agent said that they weren't told until they were on
the clock.
Speaker 8 (15:25):
Well no, but here's the thing though, talking the pay
I'll give you example. Last year with the Panthers, there
was this really bad rumor from a message board and
it actually round up moving the line because the news
aggregators put it out and they shouldn't have that.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
Will Levice was told he was gonna be the first picker.
Speaker 8 (15:42):
Overall, I typically disregard the stuff as nonsense. I had
to call the Panthers anyway about something. I said, Hey,
by the way, this is out there, please feel free
to shoot it down, and they shot it down. They said,
we're not telling anyone until we're on the clock. So
why would we tell them, because what if we get
an unbelievable offer that we can't turn down, although they're
(16:02):
ready made. Decision was going to be Bryce Young weeks ago,
weeks before that. But why would you not wait until
you're on the clock. What if someone off the three
first round picks? You just never know. So that's the
way it works.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
All right.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
So I guess no one was paying attention to what
happened in the draft three years ago with the quarterbacks,
right when we had five quarterbacks taken in the first
fifteen picks and four of them now officially are no longer.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
With their original team.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Wow, and now you have six quarterbacks taken in the
first twelve picks. By the way, let's talk about the
Broncos pick of bow Knicks. I mean, I can't imagine
that that was like, oh, we're praying the bow Knicks
is going to be there for us at number twelve.
So was this like their third quarterback? Did the Broncos
try to move up to get a different quarterback? How
(16:48):
excited are they to get a bow Nix and most
people projected as a second round pick. Let's get into
the head there of Sean Payton and his plans moving
forward with bow Knicks as his quarterback of the few.
Speaker 8 (17:00):
Yes, Steve, my understanding was, I mean, you could take
it for what it is. He thought, Uh, court to
someone who has been in touch with the Broncos over
last week and kind of hitted to me, it's going
to be Nicks. But this guy thought he'd go like
they'd trade out from the second round or something.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
He just didn't see this.
Speaker 8 (17:16):
He saw some Drew brees in him stylistically might be
a little bit taller than then Breeze. And Breeze, by
the way, was the first pickover overall in the second
round yep, by the Charger. So it wasn't like Drew
was the first round pick or a high first round pick.
The thing that I'm learning is Steve as I this
is year twenty four for me covering the NFL. When
(17:37):
a team sets zero in's on a quarterback, they more
often not will not trade down to get the player.
They're so scared about losing that player. Now here's another thing.
What we don't know was what was planned b if
someone shocked the world and selected this quarterback Knicks over them.
Because remember, now the next quarterback to go this is incredible.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Zer Rattler was the next quarterback and he went in
the fifth round.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
Crazy.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
Aside from quarterbacks. Now, let's move on to the forty
nine Ers.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
There's been a lot of trade rumors about possibly moving
on from Brandon a or Deebo Samuel. They did draft
a wide receiver, Ricky Pearsall from Surprising.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Yeah, so what do you think the forty nine ers
plan is moving forward?
Speaker 5 (18:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (18:22):
So Ayuk has not signed for the past this season,
Deebo has had injury, an injury history, really talented. This
is sort of a Kyle Shanahan guy. Kyle made the
call as he is personnel control. They could get out
of Deebo Sama's contract without it only a dime after
the season. By structure, I believe something. I think after
the season, you're probably going to see some changes at receiver,
(18:45):
either one of them are.
Speaker 5 (18:46):
I don't.
Speaker 8 (18:46):
I would say another nugget for you. They're what we
call heavy twelve personnel team. They don't play a lot
of three receivers. So are you really going to sit
Ricky Pearsall. I mean, I'm not rolling anything out here.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
I get it. The draft is almost over here.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
Any chance to trade Ayo Conceemi doing the draft is
over because you're only going to get compensation for next season.
And the other thing is, look, they think their Super
Bowl team again, they think they can get back there.
Speaker 5 (19:11):
So yeah, it is really really odd. I did not
see that.
Speaker 8 (19:15):
I get it in the third receiver, Juwan Jennings is
on a one year RFA ten or for around four million,
which is a lot for a number three receiver, particular
when they don't play a lot.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
Of three receiver sets. You're on it, Monci.
Speaker 8 (19:29):
This is a team to watch because one way or
the other, I don't see Iyo and Samuel returning for
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Obviously, with the rival of Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers are
suddenly in the spotlight. I was not upset about this pick.
I thought Joe Alt was a good selection for them.
You have a franchise quarterback, you want to protect them.
Now they got the bookend tackles with Slater on the
other side. But what happened here was suddenly defensive players
were forgotten. It wasn't until my guy a lot to
(19:55):
out of UCLA at fifteen, first defensive player off the
b I know you talked, and we had talked about
the possibility of Dallas Turner going to the Chargers' fifth overall,
the edge guy out of Alabama. So was this just
because of the run on quarterbacks, run on wide receivers,
really run on offensive tackles. That suddenly everyone lost sight
(20:16):
of the fact there are a few defensive players on
the board.
Speaker 8 (20:18):
Yeah, look not till fifteen, and that's certainly surprising. But
here's what I've been told. This was not a high
end or elite defensive player class.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
It wasn't.
Speaker 8 (20:28):
It was a lot of good players knowing what you
call blue chip presspect defensively. The first corner was taken
by the Eagles, Quinny On Mitchell. In fact, the fact
that Howie Roseman their GM didn't trade up for him
was astonishing because he's a guy who he's made eight
first round trades since he's been the general Matters since
twenty ten. Nobody's done more of them. It's kind of
hard to believe. But they didn't even trade up. That
(20:49):
tells you this draft was not strong. By the way
Dallas Turner, a couple teams told me they consider taking
him within the top fifteen. It's just kind of the
way the board out the board went, and that by
the way, the Minnesota Viking.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
This trade up to get him at number seventeen.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
You don't think this is an indication that the league
is just moving into a more offensive pro league.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
Oh it has been for years though, Yeah, it has
been for years. Yeah. The talent levels better on offensive. Yeah,
ounce with you. It's way better, all right.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
So, years and years and years ago on my radio show,
is I remember this, Bobby Bethard got upset at me
when I questioned trading up for Ryan Leaf and where
Brian still Yeah some of those Well, he was a
big proponent of trading next year's number one for this
(21:34):
year number two, which seemed an odd way of approaching
the draft. But you know, I remember the San Diego
Union tribute giving the Chargers an a plus for Ryan
Leif the day after the draft, and I thought to myself,
how are we grading a draft the day after the draft.
So why my partner and I, Philly, Billy Warndell, we
(21:55):
started doing the you know, Billy a long time with
the still kicking around, we used to do the draft
three years later.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
We figured after three years.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
We can legitimately hand out a great as far as
a draft is concerned, I'm going to put that aside,
at least based on need and where they selected players,
which is something you can judge during the draft.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Which team do you think did the best so far?
Speaker 8 (22:22):
I would say that I love the Packers what they did.
Getting Jordan Morgan. They addressed to need at left tackle.
Potentially he also could play guard. Egean Cooper the best
off the ball linebacker for this draft. Javon Bullard one
of the best safeties in the draft. In the second round,
Marshawn Lloyd the best third down back for this draft,
which they could certainly use for the future.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
I thought he did really really well there. You know.
I kind of like what Houston did. Kamari Lassiter.
Speaker 8 (22:47):
I know they didn't have a first round pick, but
he's a guy probably will be a starter.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
They got Blake Fisher's a guy could play tackle or guard.
I like what they did.
Speaker 8 (22:54):
They got Kate Stiver, who's a very talented ted end
of the fourth round, the Raiders.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
Here's what I like about the Raiders did.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
They could have gone with the corner, which is in need,
but they took the best player available.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (23:06):
I can't tell you how important that means to me.
They didn't need a tight end. They went with Michael Mayer.
Last year they won with Brock Bauers, the best player
on the board, one of the top three players for
this draft. Just take don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
Take the best player because Brock Bearers could be one
of the best tight ends in football in the next
three or four years. And Jackson Powers Johnson the best
center for the draft. D Cam Richardson if you're a
(23:26):
rated fan listening, super high upside corner, long athletic. And
then one of my favorite players for the draft, Dylan
Lobby out of New Hampshire. I met Dylan got to
Senior Bowl, one of the best players during Senior Bowl practices.
He was phenomenal. They got him in the sixth round.
Who could be their third down back? So I thought
the Raiders did well?
Speaker 2 (23:41):
All right?
Speaker 1 (23:41):
So I told Manci that as far as mister Irrelevant
is concerned, the obvious pick for the Jets is Sam Hartman.
Not just because his name is Hartman, but huh, look,
they need some kind of quarterback for the future, right
and in a city night like New York, because he's
a TikTok sensation. The ladies, you know, with the flowing
(24:01):
hair and that forty yard dash he had at the combine.
I think Sam Hartman would be the perfect final pick
of this draft, which we're not.
Speaker 8 (24:09):
You don't throw it very well. But Michael Pratt from
Tulane who at fourth and fifth round grade from teams,
he's still available. It's kind of it's stunning to me. Uh.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
Sam Hartman is a guy that I.
Speaker 8 (24:18):
Didn't think would get drafted. He's a gamer, fairly athletic.
He just doesn't throw the ball very well. He's but
he won the beard game though. He's got the best.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Oh he's got the hair man the hair.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
Yeah, yeah, it really does got it man.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Not everybody, not every The Brock Party is a once
in a million years type of situation.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
It's not gonna happen again.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
I know, all right, well, Adham, I know it's been
a very busy time for you. We appreciate it, and
we'll have plenty of time in the weeks ahead to
sort of settle in on the next step that never
ends around the National Football League. By the way, what
do they end up as far as fans are concerned.
He'd tried and I know they set records. What about
seven eight, hundred thousand over.
Speaker 8 (24:53):
Yeah, well I know, I know when they first put
it out it was over five hundred and fifty thousand.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
It's really incredible beating Philly.
Speaker 8 (24:59):
I was here for the which is just insane, and
they love having an outdoors and I believe the weather
held up, which is great. Tennessee's one's great in Nashville,
in Las Vegas. I was there last year, was phenomenal,
and it just gets bigger and bigger. It's it's really
remarkable how big the draft is.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Yeah, we had no cameras in the room with Al
Davis and Ron Wolf and Tom Flores when I was there,
I no nothing back in the eighties. It was a
whole different world out there. All right, Adam, great stuff
is always Thanks. We'll talk to you next week. Thank you,
Adam Kaplan are Fox Sports Radio, NFL Insider.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
All right, let's find out what is trending right now.
Martin is back. Martin? How you doing double duty every weekend?
Speaker 5 (25:39):
Now?
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Pretty much?
Speaker 9 (25:40):
You know me, I'm versatile. I love that, you know.
I like some of these offensive linemen taking it. I
could play outside, you can kick me inside. It depends
who's on the roster.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
It is good to see you out there. Well we do.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
We haven't even gotten to the NBA the playoffs going on.
We got baseball, got a lot of things going on.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
It is a lot going on.
Speaker 9 (25:57):
First, we'll start with those little sad news. Damian Lillard
diagnosed with a gray one achilles strand, doubtful for Game
four of the playoffs tomorrow at Indiana. Pacers leading that
series two games to one. Cavaliers at the Magic earlier today,
Orlando wins one to eleven and eighty nine. Series now
tied two games apiece. Going back to Cleveland for Game five.
Franz Wagner with thirty four points thirteen rebounds, thunder and
(26:19):
the Pelicans down in New Orleans, Oklahoma City wins Game
three of that series, one hundred and six to eighty five. Pelicans,
thanks for coming out. Celtics under heat about to get
started the second quarter in Miami. That series is tied
at one apiece. The score right now twenty four to
twelve in favor of the one seeded Boston Celtics. Had
(26:39):
some drama on the ice earlier today Hurricanes in the
Islanders Game four, Carolina, with a three going into the game,
had a three to nothing lead on the series. Islanders
keep it alive though in double overtime, winning three to two.
Obviously now a three to one lead for the Hurricanes.
Also in the NHL, the Panthers and the Lightnings. About
eight minutes left in the second period, Tampa Bay with
(26:59):
a four to two lead over the Panthers, who have
a three to nothing lead in the series. And there
was a couple of NFL draft trades going on. We
are now in the seventh round, and the big name
that just came off the board Brendan Rice. Jerry Rice's
son is going to USC. I'm sorry. He went to
(27:20):
USC for college plays wide receiver. He's going to stay
in southern California, going to your Chargers.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Yeah, so I don't have to suit up. I was
getting ready to suit up and be a receiver for
the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
I mean you again, Quinn Johnson and Brendan Rice. You
still might they still might need a guy in the slots.
Speaker 4 (27:38):
I can do it. I get I'll get in and
out real quick. I'm small.
Speaker 9 (27:41):
Well before you do that, why don't you host the
rest of his radio show?
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Back to you guys? All right, all right, Martin, thank
you very much.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Once again, we are coming you alive from the tyrack
dot com studios.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
All right, seventeen picks left in this draft.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
And all you care about is the party pick.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
And no one more party than Sam Harton.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
He is the prettiest out there and he would be
the great pick for the Jets. So seventeen picks left
in this draft.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
You never know.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
I mean, there are so many great stories over the
years that I've heard about really late, late, late picks.
I keep hearkening back to the day. Imagine when I
was working in the NFL in the eighties, we had
twelve rounds of the draft.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Twelve twelve rounds last a week, and.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
Before that they had seventeen rounds to the draft, so
the draft was lengthy, aer and they've shortened the draft. Well,
the same thing with the NBA. We have a two
round draft in the NBA. I remember when it was
ten rounds, So you know, you would have all these
guys selected by these teams, and obviously none of them
would ever see the light of day, but you never know.
(28:46):
I remember the great story about the Raiders was John
Madden was still the coach of the Raiders Oakland Raiders
at the time, and they had come down to the
final twelfth round of the draft in nineteen seventy seven,
and they have two picks in the twelfth round, and honestly,
they had run out of names, and one of John Maddens,
(29:06):
in fact, it was his best friend, was John Robinson,
who at that time.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Was the coach at USC.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
So he calls him and he says, do you have
any players that could be drafted that haven't been drafted?
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Do you think could actually play in the NFL?
Speaker 1 (29:21):
And he says, well, one guy is this undersized linebacker
we have. His name is Rod Martin, and I'm telling
you he plays bigger than he is.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
So the Raiders take him in the twelfth round.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
They actually released him in training, cap they signed him back,
and three years later he intercepted three passes in the
Super Bowl to win a Super Bowl championship and eventually
became an All Pro. So this is this day, we're
seeing all these names coming off the board. It's just
sort of this whirlwind of names, most of which we've
never heard of before. But someone emerges, as Tom Brady
(29:55):
did as a six round pick, as brock Perty did
as the last pick in the draft. Just a couple
of years ago, and this is where the scouts really
earn their money. It's one thing to pick a guy
in the first round to even day two not impressive.
But if you can find players on day three, there
are more than just filling out a roster that actually
becomes starters and productive players.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
That's where you're earn your money.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Yeah. I always think of Isaiah Pacheco going in the
seventh round for the Chiefs. Ye, and it's very different than.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
In the NBA.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
In the NBA, it's like you're you're probably not gonna
find on Nikolaokich.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
I guess probably not.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
In the second round. Sam Green was the second round.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
But it doesn't happen as often as NFL, you know.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
So every year there's somebody or two or three that
come out late, and you're right, give it up to
the scouts on those because it's not impressive if you
pick somebody right in the first round, and you should
get it right in the first round. And so we'll see,
we'll see who emerges out of this draft, you know,
especially now that we're coming to the end of it.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
Yeah, I agreed with what Adam said about brock Hours.
I mean, because yes, you're talking about again taking the
best player on the board. And this is something that
unfortunately in the latter years of Al Davis was not doing,
where he was taking guys out of context. And I'm
just a big believer again, you know, especially at the
(31:14):
top half of the first round, you've got to take
the best players, yeah, even if they don't fit later.
And when again, when we talk about the Packers, when
they took Aaron Rodgers obviously had no need for a quarterback.
He still had Brett Favron his prime. But they were like,
we have this guy projected as the best quarterback in
this draft, and he's still on the board in the twenties.
(31:37):
We've got to take him.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Yeah, there's strategy mixed with logic at a certain point.
And so yeah, I agree. I agreed with a Him
as well on that pick.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
All right, so now your team is the Chargers.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
That is yes, Why do you say it like that?
Speaker 2 (31:51):
I like what the Chargers did, ye see, I think that.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
They I think that they show at Yes, that was
the correct logical choice in the moment, the emotional choice.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Jim Harbour wants to run the ball. Yes, have you
never paid attention?
Speaker 6 (32:05):
Right?
Speaker 3 (32:06):
But that kind of also makes me want I want
Justin Herbert to do his thing and I want him
to throw the ball, you know. But yes, it was
the right choice protection for Justin Herbert matters, I get it.
I still wanted the flashy choice, you know, Molik Neighbors,
I wanted that.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Call me crazy, but it was the right logical choice.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
Yes, I know it would have been interesting if the
Chargers had taken the leak Neighbors, because everyone was buzzing
about the Giants maybe taking a quarter which did not
make sense to me at all.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
I was years ago. You saw enough.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Out of Daniel Jones to give him the huge contract extension.
He took a step back, but there are a number
of reasons for that. But this cam's down to Brian
Dabelert coach. I mean, he's the quarterback whisperer. You have
to ask him, do you still believe in Daniel Jones?
Apparently the answer was yes. But if they Chargers had
(33:03):
taken Neighbors, would they have taken Joe alt Or maybe
the Giants would have gone in a different.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Direction because they also could have used Joe alt Or
any team could use it.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Joel. But I mean, if he turns out to be
another Joe Thomas.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it would have been interesting, or maybe
they would have gone for a quarterback at that point.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Who knows what they were thinking.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
It's a domino thing.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
The top four picks went exactly as everyone predictive from
day one. And this is something again every single year
we get into the draft those last couple of weeks,
he start throwing out all these hot rumors and it
ends up being at the top what you expected to be,
just like it was last year, you know, with Bryce Young,
you know Stroud and then Anderson. That's what everyone had
(33:50):
said it was going to be before the draft and
then exactly played out all right. Coming up on the
other side, there was another football story that happened this week.
Justice was finally served. We'll explain. This is Fox Sports Saturday.
Speaker 6 (34:04):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Steve Harman and Monsie Belania is here Fox Sports Saturday.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
We are down to the last twelve picks.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
By the way, Michael Pratt the quarterback added Tull Lane
quarterback that Adam Kaplan told us about was just taken
in the seventh round by.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
The Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Oh okay, so, by the way, USC has had three
players taken in the seventh round.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
So they're rating the USC roster at the end of
this draft.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
But twelve more picks and then we will have this
draft in the books for twenty twenty four. Once again,
we're here at the tire rack dot Com. We're brought
to live from the tire rack dot Com studios. I
want to mention this story because it really surprised me
and I could have been more thrilled. And that was
the announcement, and it came very very early in the morning.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yes, like five in the morning. Arts, I'm here in
La Yeah, it.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Was really early in the morning that the Heisman Trust
announced that Reggie Bush was going to get his Heisman
trophy back. And what does that mean, Well, it means
quite a few things. Great picture by the way of
Reggie Bush surrounded by about eleven other former Heisman winners,
some old, some new. Also obviously, he said all the
(35:33):
right things about how grateful he is to get his
Heisman back. By the way, USC gets their Heisman back.
If you don't know this. Every year, two Heisman Trophies
are made. One is given to the university, one is
given to the player, And that now officially means USC
has more Heisman Trophy winners than any other school. They
have eight, So they now break that tie with several
(35:53):
other schools. And this has just been the right thing
to do. My problem almost from the get go with
this story, and this is a bigger thing to me
when it comes about penalties on teams that are involved
in some kind of infractions. Look, taking away victories or
statistics doesn't make sense to me. If you want to
(36:17):
penalize a team in terms of scholarships, you know, towards
the future, that makes sense. But going back in time
and taking wins off the books, games that have been played,
or stats out of the book, that just never made sense.
And I'll give you an example Major League Baseball with
the scandal involved in the Houston Astros. The Astro they
(36:38):
didn't take away their World Series win.
Speaker 10 (36:42):
No.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
And also when we talk about players busted for peds,
they didn't take their stats off the books.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Now, how do they get penalized.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Well, the baseball writers have been penalized in a lot
of players by not putting them in the Hall of Fame.
And the Astros twenty seventeen World Series win is always
going to be tainted, oh forever, So it always stand
as a tainted World Series, but you don't eliminate it.
The Astros won the World Series, they cheated to win
the World Series, and it stands as is. So this
(37:16):
was the right thing to do for the Heisman Trust.
I know they were excited. I know people of the
Heisman Trust. I had talked to people about this. Their
frustration was is that the reason that we had kept
the Heisman out of his hands is that the NCAA
had eliminated all his stats that year. So according to
the NCAA, he didn't play that year, and that's why
we did it.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
Well.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
They weren't going to wait for the NCAA.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
They could read the writing on the wall with the
emergence of Nil and everything else. So Reggie Bush back
where he belongs, part of the Heisman fraternity.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
It was about about damn time. In the words of Lizzo,
about damn time, because there were so many things.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
I agree with you. Why are we racing the pass now?
I wanted the Astros to.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
Have to give up that championship becase I'm Dodgers fan,
so of course I wanted that.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
But I hear totally what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
You can't erase the past it happened, but you can't
penalize them for the future, and it actually is effective.
Speaker 10 (38:10):
Right.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
What Reggie Bush was penalized for was something to me
that was so ridiculous because Lebron James was driving out
Hummer in high school.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
So you're telling me that he was the only player that.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
Was getting any benefits and it was his family, it
was his parents, it wasn't even him.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
It was something so so ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
And I was also so happy because throughout the years
we've heard him say that he wanted it back, Like
if he didn't care, then it's different, right, But he
did care. He wanted that back, and so it was
about damn time. Even Johnny Manziel recently remember he was like,
I'm not going to go to any more of these
events anymore until everything is stored and back to what
it should be. Reggie Bush getting his Heisman trophy back.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
I interviewed Barry Sanders.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
I interviewed a number of Heisman winners over the years
since Bush got his heisman taken away, and I'd always
ask him the same question. I'd say, all right, let's
say you're hanging out in the Heisman House, Yeah, the
Fictionary Heisman House, and there's a knock on the door, and.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
It's Reggie Bush at the door. Do you let him in?
Speaker 1 (39:12):
Obviously, every single Heisman winner said, whether he physically has
a Heisman or not does not matter to us.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
He is always one of us. He will always be
one of us.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
And that gathering, that picture with all those former Heisman winners,
it's a very tight fraternity. That's very exclusive company to
be in, that Heisman family.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
And now Reggie Bush is there.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
And by the way, just going back, his stepfather really
was the instigator here. And if you forget the story,
basically what happened was he made a deal with these
guys who were trying to become Reggie Bush's agent of
the future. And then as Reggie Bush was obviously maybe
the first or second pick in the draft, the father
renegged on his promise as these guys had helped him
(39:58):
out with this house, and these were the guys that
blew the whistle. I still maintain, even though Reggie Bush
has never said this, maybe to the protection of his parents.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
I don't he ever had any clue.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
I don't either.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
I think that is if he had any questions, the
step fatherly goes not a big deal, don't or you
just go out and play football. Yeah, and so everything handled.
It was beautiful. It was great to say.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
It was just about down time.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
So yes, now we had Heisman Trophy winners go one
two in this draft. I haven't even had very quickly
here Jade and Daniels versus Caleb Williams.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Who's going to have a better career. I want you
on the record right now.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
Well that's not fair because Caleb Williams is now surrounded
by so many weapons. So the logical answer would be
to say, Caleb Williams, they have set them up for
major success.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
Even if the Bears haven't had a really great quarterback
in oh I don't know forever.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
I know, I know, but I feel like that is
the logical answer.
Speaker 4 (40:54):
And I don't like logic.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
All right, you need some logic about your clippers and
a lot more going out with these NBA playoffs.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
This is Fox Sports Saturday.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
Rolling along here on a very busy Saturday, Fox Sports Saturday,
broadcasting live from the ti rag dot com studios.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Tyrag dot com.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
We're gonna help get you there and I'm Matt Selection
fast free shipping, free road ass of protection, over ten
thousand recommended installers, tire rack dot com. The way tire
buying should be. Six picks left in the draft.
Speaker 4 (41:26):
Ooh, coming down to the final stretch.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Actually, now five picks work in the draft, so we're
coming down the stretch.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
Jets will have the mister irrelevant pick.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
They pick the party pick now coming up at number
two fifty seven in this year's NFL draft. Very exciting
day for a lot of young men that have I'm
sure been dreaming of this day to come. Last Sunday,
I went back to Rich Ornberger. I overplayed Rich's importance
in the draft of two thousand and nine. He was
(41:55):
a fourth round pick of the New England Patriots at
the height of their power, and as I said, the
most historic draft ever because of the.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
Drafting of rich Ornberger.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
But even for a fourth round or fifth rounding, even
those that are being named here in the seventh round,
just to see your name on the board. With all
the coverage of the NFL Draft associated with the National
Football League is a huge thrill for these young guys.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
It really is.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
It's exciting to see you day one, all those players
with their families waiting for their name to be called.
Like you said, the first four when in the order
everyone expected. But aside from those guys, everybody else is
kind of waiting right at the edge of their seats
like they really don't know. Will Levis we saw last
year sack through the entire day and didn't get called,
(42:39):
which is an awful feeling, I can only assume.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
But getting your name called must.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Be one of the coolest moments, something that you probably
can't even describe.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
You have to go through it.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
How about this, The Chargers just picked at fifth the
last pick of the draft, Cornelius Johnson.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
There, we played for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan's.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
One of those this is one of those where all right,
I mean, we need wide receiver help. Obviously, the Chargers
lost all the wide receivers, so they definitely need wide
receiver help. But yeah, Jim Harbaugh maybe doing a favorite
a young man that played for him at Michigan helped
him win a national championship. Second leading receiver from Michigan
a year ago and now he can say I was
(43:20):
drafted in the NFL. So Cornelius Johnson, wide receiver out
of Michigan is going to the Los Angeles Chargers. All right,
so we got all this draft talk going on, But
in the midst of all this, we also have the
NBA playoffs.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
I'm going to start with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (43:35):
Okay, why Well, because the Lakers have a guy named
Lebron James. They have Anthony Davis playing at a high level.
In fact, when you started the season, if you had
said that both those guys would play at least seventy
games in the regular season back, Anthony Davis played I believe,
seventy six games out of eighty two if you had
(43:58):
said that. With the way they played at the end
of last year getting to the Western Conference finals, re
signed really Hatchamura. You know, obviously d Lo was going
to be coming back. Austin Reeves had suddenly proven that
he could play at a high level in this league.
I'd say that the Lakers had a pretty good shot
of being at least a top four seed in the
(44:18):
Western Conference. Instead, they needed a play and win just
to get into the playoffs. And now for the second
consecutive year, they could be swept out by the Denver Nuggets.
So the question for the Lakers is this, because I've
heard some people make the argument when there are a
(44:40):
lot of people like my son Garrett, who he wants
to blow this whole thing up, I cantand like he says,
I want to trade Anthony Davis, like he has high
trade value, trade him five first round picks. Whatever we
need to blow this up. And of course, remember Lebron
James has a player option this year, and if he
decides he wants to stay with the Lake, he will
(45:00):
be with the Lakers. If he wants to hesitate seeing
what the rest of the makeup of the roster be,
that could change. But some people are just making the
argument that don't judge the Lakers on this series against
the Nuggets. For whatever reason, they don't match up with
the Nuggets. They've had a double digit lead in each
of these three games at some point and in the
(45:21):
end the Nuggets run away from them. But their argument
is they can compete against anybody else. And my thought,
as a person that has followed the Lakers, rooted for
the Lakers throughout most of my life, is you need
to be a championship team to even register in Laker history.
(45:42):
Kobe Bryant told me that many many times, two greats
A and F. Either you win the championship or you don't.
There's no bonus points or losing in the NBA Finals
or getting to the conference fight, none of that. That's
the same as losing every game you didn't win a championship.
The question is what standard are you using to determine
(46:04):
what direction the Lakers are going if indeed this series
ends tonight.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
The direction that they're going in is not a good one.
And unfortunately, I don't.
Speaker 4 (46:14):
Know how you fix it.
Speaker 3 (46:15):
If you keep both Lebron and Ad it's not working.
Speaker 4 (46:19):
I don't know what's happening in the locker room, but
it's not working.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
And to say, do not judge them on this series, no,
I'm going to We are in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (46:29):
This is when everybody steps up.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Look at the Orlando Magic blowing out the Cavs last
two games.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
It is the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (46:36):
If you cannot hold a double digit lead three games
in a row, that's your problem.
Speaker 4 (46:41):
And also good job to the other team.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
I I based on this series, it looks to me
like they are not in sync and there is no.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
Quote unquote culture.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
We keep hearing that word with certain teams Miami Heat
great quote, which you're literally beat Boston in Boston for
Game two right now, they're not when in Miami. But
they also don't have my boy Jimmy Butler, who I
love so much.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
Uh whoahoa, whoa aren't they gonna puzzle? Then talk about
Jimmy Butler, who's watching this game. He's in a hair
style for.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
Yes, it's two little ponytails, two little puffy ponytails that
I am just like, how do you not love that?
Speaker 10 (47:21):
Man?
Speaker 4 (47:22):
How do you not love that? Man? I do? Okay?
Speaker 3 (47:25):
Anyway, Yes, the culture doesn't seem to exist with the Lakers.
How is it that in the last game Lebron loses
the ball off his knee and looks at his teammate
and basically blames this or it looks to us on
TV like you're blaming your teammate D'Angelo Russell not even
part of the team huddle. That looks like there's no culture,
(47:47):
like there's no respect, like they're not on the same team.
When you watch a ridiculous show, have you ever watched
any like what's Terry McBride, No, that's is that a player?
Speaker 4 (47:56):
The actor? Hold on McBride, what's his name? Jehan mcbrin, Right,
is that his name? The actor? He's like, so I'll
look it up.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
Any like ridiculous show like what we Do in the Shadows?
Speaker 4 (48:06):
Have you heard of that show about the vampires?
Speaker 2 (48:07):
I watched the Food Network?
Speaker 3 (48:09):
Okay, so anytime there's some ridiculous show and you watch
it and you're like, why does this work? Because they're
all believing they're in the same universe. You have to
all believe in the same thing. They seem to believe
in the same thing.
Speaker 1 (48:24):
Well, and that comes down to coaching. What is the
purpose of a coach? Well with what is the purchase?
But that's now. You just brought up Lebron.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
So this is the thing.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Whether it was Frank Vogel or Darvin Ham, it doesn't
matter because this is Lebron James's team. You have given
him full control of this game. The deals that they
made after winning the championship have been counterproductive. The Russell
Westbrook trade was a disaster.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
And how they didn't see that from the beginning is
beyond me.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
You took away key role players.
Speaker 4 (48:59):
Right, in other places exactly so.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
And by the way, Malik Monk a runner up for
six Man of the Year this year. So they've been
making personnel moves. Whether Lebron wants to admit or not,
he's the guy calling all the shots.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
And so this is the dilemma.
Speaker 1 (49:14):
Because it's his option this year whether or not he
wants to remain with the Lakers. He's publicly stated he
doesn't want to go anywhere at this point of his career.
He wants to stay with the Laker organization. Obviously, you
got Anthony Davis under contract. Delo is a walk away
free agent.
Speaker 4 (49:30):
And it looks like he's ready to walk.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
Zero points in Game three after hitting seven threes in
game number two. And then Darvin Ham, who was reacting
to what was a direct shot at him and the
coaching staff by Anthony Davis after Game two.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
I mean, that was the Tobacca.
Speaker 1 (49:46):
How do you blow a twenty point leading four in
the third quarter unless you try, And you know, he said,
there are times when we don't have any clue of
what we're doing on either end of the court.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
Well, that's a direct shot of the co coach.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
And then Darvin Hand's reaction was, well, he just said
something in the heat of the moment.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
He doesn't really mean that. Now, actually he does really
mean that.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
But it's always someone else's fault, right like after the
game where Lebron pushed off, pushed off, went for that
wide open three and missed. How is Lebron at the
end blaming the rest. You had a wide open three,
my guy, and if this is your team, you should
have made that.
Speaker 4 (50:24):
You should have made that shot.
Speaker 2 (50:26):
There are several teams in these playoffs.
Speaker 1 (50:29):
If you haven't noticed the direction that this league is going, well,
we'll point out on the other side. By the way,
Mark Madina, our NBA insider, is going to join us
later on in this hour as well. But there is
a definite trend in this league that's undeniable in terms
of postseason success. We'll explain. This is Fox Sports Saturday.
(50:51):
Steve Harbin, Monzie Bologna's here Fox Sports Saturday. Now, don't
forget right after the show. Our podcast is going after

(51:12):
we get off the air. Once again, we're coming you
live from the tire rack dot Com studios.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
And now to get a little deeper into what's going on.
Speaker 1 (51:19):
In these first round matchups in the NBA Playoffs, is
our Fox Sports Radio NBA insider Mark Medina joining us
once again.
Speaker 2 (51:28):
So Mark, I want to start with the Phoenix.
Speaker 1 (51:31):
Sun for a second here, because I've been spending some
time in Phoenix recently and they are absolutely livid at
how they broke up a good thing, a team that
won sixty four games two years ago, to the debacle
they have right now with three shooters, no depth, no chemistry,
and a team that could very well get swept out
(51:52):
of the first round of the playoffs. This idea of
putting three superstars together in terms of winning a championship,
Ye are those days over.
Speaker 10 (52:04):
It's a wild puzzle for the Sons to figure out
because we saw the radio on the wall when they
decided to go on in and do this three superstar
concept of what is it going to be for their health,
what's it going to be for their depth? And ironically enough,
there's never been personality conflicts of the chemistry is there,
but when you don't have enough time to actually get
(52:26):
that chemistry because of their health and not enough depth.
You know, they have some good role players, but clearly
not enough to match Minnesota. This is what we have,
This is what you get. But I think the troubling
thing is is I don't know how they get their
way out of this. They're kind of sunk so deep
into it. They've already made a coaching changer Jane frank Bogel,
(52:48):
they already have money tied down, and because of what's
been happening with the Suns, it would be hard for
me to envision there being many buyers. So no doubt.
Knowing how mad ishb is a is an I would
suspect there's changes to be made that how he executes
that that remains to be Hi, Mark, thanks for hanging
out with us, Hi as thanks for having me as always.
Speaker 3 (53:11):
So speaking of how do you fix this? How do
you get out of it? The Lakers, Mark, I hate
you know, I may be enjoying it a little too
much as a Clippers fan, but I was just saying
to Steve that as a as a basketball spectator, it
looks like there's just no culture in that locker room.
Speaker 4 (53:30):
It looks like everybody is on a different page.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
Am I am I off by by That's just what
I see, Am I off No, I.
Speaker 10 (53:39):
Think you're onto something. Monster. I think that that Lakers
do have a culture, but the culture only works when
things are going well. I mean, it obviously starts with
Lebron James Anthony Davis, and they've been playing at an
incredibly elite level this season. Mostly been healthy, Mostly I've
been matching what we've seen in other seasons, but the
inconsistency elsewhere has been very bad, you know, when it
(54:01):
comes to their supporting cast. Now, Darvin Ham's managed things,
and so I think that there's always been the right
intentions with this season, but as we've seen this first
round series, they haven't been able to rely on that.
And I think that ever since Game two, when Jamal
Murray hit that game winner to steal game is steal
(54:22):
the game, it feels like the team has just been
completely lost and lifeless. Yeah, And so while we did see, yeah,
the Lakers had a good effort Game three, they were
up by twelve points and then yet again, they squadered
the double digit lead. It did feel like the tenor
(54:42):
of the series really changed since that Game two loss.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
Well, and that brings up the question of what's their
next move Now.
Speaker 1 (54:51):
I have to say, Mark, I have a son who
is a guy that lives in Breeze, the Laker base basketball.
He wants to blow this team up, completely obliterate it.
He wants to trade Anthony Davis. He says his stock
is at a sky high because he was healthy this year,
and he goes based on some of these other trades
(55:12):
I've seen, he get five first round picks for him,
start over, get rid of Lebron. They're not gonna go
any further for this, but they do have to figure
out what's gonna happen the fate of two guys. One
is D'Angelo russ who has a player option for just
eighteen million. I'm gonna guess that D'Angel Russell, who's gonna
opt out and try to test the free agent market.
Speaker 2 (55:33):
And then what does Lebron do? I mean, Lebron is
calling the shots here. Let's make no mistake about that.
Speaker 1 (55:39):
He's called the shots on every team he's ever played for.
If this season ends tonight and they get swept out
again by the Denver Nuggets. Does he have faith in
the future being a Laker that he can make a
serious run for another NBA championship.
Speaker 10 (55:55):
Yeah, it's a fair question whether they stay faith and
force the game five to nine or the sea is over.
I don't think it fundamentally changes the complexity of the
questions that you outline now. To be clear, I don't
think that Lebron James and the Lakers are going to
end their partnership. And while the easy answer for why
is you know the business end and you know the
(56:15):
Lakers are used to having star power on their franchises,
even when you know their past their prime, I think
it also comes from a pragmatic lens that their skepticism
that they could even make the best of a trade
and with them because of where he's at in his career.
But that I think leads to the also and fog
(56:36):
in the road of what they've had to wrestle with
last season. Do they put their chips in for a
third star or do they try to do the continuity route?
And I think because of what we saw this past playoffs,
I think the conclusion is they're going to make changes,
but that doesn't mean they'll do the third star. I
think that when we've been looking at this philosophical discussion
(56:58):
last year, it wasn't about what preference the Lakers have.
It was more of what the options were available. And
so I think one of the reasons why the Lakers
went against the third star route was because there's just
a skepticism with Kyrie Irving because of his unpredictable nature
that he's shown in past seasons. I think that conversation
(57:19):
might change depending on who is available this summer because
they have more draft picks at their disposal. But you know,
when the low hanging fruit option about Trey Young comes
to mind, I think that the Lakers might guard against
that because we've seen with Trey Young he is a
great player, but he doesn't exactly lead the winning basketball.
(57:42):
So there's a lot of things to untangle here. And
I think the ironic part, no doubt Lebron has influence
with the franchise than he is who he is. But
when you look at the track record of moves they
have and have it made since the Russell Westbrook trade,
they've act actually gone against what Lebron has wanted. So
(58:04):
while Lebron will always have some degree of influence. I
think that they have learned the lesson with us that
they're going to make the decisions, whether they are good
decisions or not, but the decisions that they are making
independent of him. But regardless of that, there's a lot
of complex things that they have to unpack this season,
(58:24):
and it's certainly not going to be easy.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
Mark helped me unpacked what my unpack what my Clippers
have done. I don't understand why Kawhi Leonard played game two.
He seems to not be one hundred percent. We were
in a groove game one, comes to play Game two,
doesn't seem one hundred percent. Comes game three, it's certain
he's not one hundred percent. Why did we rush him
(58:48):
back on the court. Help me understand that?
Speaker 10 (58:50):
Yeah, lasta I've been wrestling with that myself. I mean,
we're I'm always humbled because the Clippers aren't really transparent
with exact information.
Speaker 4 (58:59):
You don't.
Speaker 10 (59:00):
But it did scratch my head that tylu Is saying
flippantly that game two was his contact practice, like usually
used contact practice for actually a practice setting. But I
think that they concluded based off of what the medical
staff told him, was that it was relatively healed enough,
fully healed enough that they didn't feel that they were
(59:23):
putting him out in a dangerous situation. But as we've
seen with Kawhi Leonard, with his injury history, it's always
fluid day to day, and so with Game three, you know,
he played limited minutes. He was struggling to find a rhythm,
and I think it's telling that he's questionable already for
Game four tomorrow. They're really losing any opportunity for him
(59:44):
to get actual practice to build a rhythm. But you know,
to the point that you're making about, okay, what did
they wrestle with with the fact that now everyone else
is thrown out of whack. I think that they concluded
that even a fully less effective version of Kawhi Leonard
is better than nothing, and that what they saw in
game one, it was encouraging that they could hold the
four down without them, but I thought that it wasn't
(01:00:07):
sustainable for beyond the games. So that's what they're wrestling
with now. So it's not like the Lakers. They're dealing
with uneasy and complex things to unpack, but for different reasons.
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
I think there's a.
Speaker 1 (01:00:20):
Lot of similarities between these two organizations. You talked about it, Mark,
and I agree with you the idea that the three
star situation with the Lakers may not work. It may
not work for the Clippers as well. Obviously, James Harden
is a walk away free agent after this year, and
then they have to address the Paul George contract situation.
Are you ready to give him an extended deal upwards
(01:00:40):
of sixty million a year, which is now the going
rate for free agents on the market. Do you expect
the Clippers to do that for Paul George?
Speaker 10 (01:00:48):
Well, I do expect them to do it, but I
think that it's very telling that they haven't done it
yet because they already extended Kawhi Leonard, and the feeling
at the time was that the dominoes are now going
to put be put into place where you know, Paul
George is going to get taken care of, then James
hard and that hasn't happened. And while I do think
(01:01:09):
that most of it has to do with the fact
that they want to see how the playoffs play out
and they want to use that as leverage for better
and for worse, with trying to have a good deal
that makes both parties feel appreciated, but being very savvy,
you know, with the salary cap, it is telling in
and of itself that it wasn't something that that are
(01:01:30):
rushing to do. Now that being said, I think that
they do resign Paul George. I think they do resign
James Harden. But until the you know, the ink is
completely dry on penn with pen and paper, none of
that means anything because everything can be so change.
Speaker 4 (01:01:49):
Yeah, Mark, I got one more for you. Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:01:52):
So here we are the Suns Kevin Durant down oh three,
Lebron James, Lakers down O three, Steph Curry.
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
Not in the playoffs. Are we entering a new era
of basketball?
Speaker 10 (01:02:06):
Oh? We certainly are. I mean we have already experienced
them with saying that Denver Nuggets win the championship last season. Uh,
we're seeing, you know, a lot of younger teams like
the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Oklahoma City Thunder makes the run.
Maybe we'll finally see the Boston Celtics with Jason Tatum
and Jaylen Brown win a championship. I mean, the list
goes on and on. So, uh, the playoff exits are
(01:02:29):
the imminent playoff exits that you mentioned with Steph Lebron
and KD. I don't think that that means it's the
end of their career. They're still going to play and
I think that they're still you know, productive years ahead
of them. But I don't think that either of those
players are going to win another championship. And I don't
think they'll have any realistic shot of you know, being
(01:02:50):
on a team that can make you know, any any
deep playoff run, barring you know, significant changes. But while
I do have faith in how the Warriors have operated,
you know, they had their own complex questions so to
rustle with where you know, I think that they want
to keep Kway Thompson because of not just the sentimental
part but the pragmatic part. But they got to find
(01:03:12):
the right dour figure and if they find the right
hour figure, they really have to use that cap space
well to actually have a consistent supporting cast around that
championship core there.
Speaker 1 (01:03:22):
Well, I know a lot of people on the Western
Conference side we're saying, is OKC for real?
Speaker 10 (01:03:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
Are the Timberwolves for real? Well, so far the answer
is a big yes. Of course, they have a roadblock
in their way, and that would be the defending champion
Denver Nuggets. Mark great Stuff is always we appreciate the time.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 10 (01:03:40):
Mon iSIG great stuff right back at you. Always appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (01:03:44):
There he is the great Mark Medina join us our
NBA insider. Now let's find out what is trending. And
Martin's been hanging out with us today.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
And it'll be here for a few more hours.
Speaker 4 (01:03:55):
Yeah you will.
Speaker 2 (01:03:56):
Yeah, you're all.
Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
You're just getting started with your day. Are you wearing
an odd up old hat?
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
I am Where did you get that?
Speaker 9 (01:04:03):
Believe it or not, Rob Parker is a big proponent
of pushing his own brand.
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
So yeah, I would never even known this.
Speaker 9 (01:04:10):
You know, I know it's hard to believe, but this
is officially from the Rob Parker store. Conduct in from
merch Rob Parker MLB bro on social media, He'll be how.
Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
He gave that to you? You wouldn't have bought that. I
know I wouldn't have bought it. No, that's not I'm not.
I work here.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
You know, however, he probably puts you on payroll if
the you wear it out in public and people ask
you about.
Speaker 9 (01:04:29):
It, and well, you know, Steve, I do do a
hit on the eye couple. Everything was at eight thirty eastern,
nine thirty one of the two.
Speaker 2 (01:04:38):
I'm trying to mark down all the things that Martin does.
Speaker 3 (01:04:40):
Direct Well, it's like Beyonce says, he work Monday through Friday,
hustle Friday through Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:04:46):
Yes, there you go.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
I'm very proud to be it's true. I told him
that's the way, and he's doing it all right. What's
going on today, Martin?
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
We got a draft that's over finally.
Speaker 4 (01:04:56):
Can you give us all the picks in order?
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:04:58):
Number one, Caleb Williams now number two fifty seven, mister irrelevant.
Jalen Key, safety from Alabama, picked two fifty seven to
the New York Jets. Welcome to the NFL. And everybody's
gonna say, wait, Brock Perdy did it? So can you
bud yep? All right? Milwaukee Bucks Damian Lillard diagnosed with
a great one a chilly strain, doubtful for Game four tomorrow.
(01:05:19):
Pacers lead that series two games to one. Cavaliers and
the Magic all tied up to a piece now as
Orlando won earlier today UH one twelve to eighty nine.
Franz Wagner thirty four points, thirteen rebounds. Thunder lead their
series three games to zero, as they played early today
down in New Orleans and thumped the Pelicans one O
six to eighty five Celtics in the heat. Right now
(01:05:41):
midway through the third quarter, about five twenty left Boston
with the twenty one point leads seventy four to fifty three.
Quick mattery, like that months I do. Earlier today in
the NFL the Hurricane and the Islanders. Carolina had a
three to nothing lead to start the series, but New
York keeps the series alive, winning in double overtime three
(01:06:01):
to two. Obviously, now Carolina with a three to one
lead in the series and Florida has a three to
nothing lead over Tampa Bay in the series. But in
today's game, the Tampa Bay Lightning are leading five to
three with six minutes left in the third period. Steven
Monci back to you guys, all.
Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
Right, Martin, great job is always. You'll be hearing Martin
later on.
Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
Actually he's on twenty four to seven on Fox Sports Radio,
so you'll hear plenty of him once again. We are
here coming to you live from the tairaq dot com studios.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
So the first team that could.
Speaker 1 (01:06:37):
Be eliminated from these NBA playoffs would be the Los
Angeles Lakers home tonight against the Denver Nuggets. I don't
know if we talk enough about the Nuggets.
Speaker 4 (01:06:46):
We don't.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
The Nuggets in a lot of ways are very much
like the Spurs were back in the day, especially if
they can actually back up last year's championship with another championship.
I say that because the constructed beauty beautifully the construction
of this team, not just as they play on the court,
(01:07:07):
but from a salary standpoint. The one thing about the
Spurs back in the days of Duncan and Parker and
Jannobiley and then later with Kawhi I remember, I would
look at their salaries and you would say, they're paying
the right amount of money to everyone. That's very rare
in the NBA because you can put almost any roster
together like you're paying this guy that, or you're not
(01:07:30):
paying this guy enough. It was never that way with
the Spurs, and that's why they were a consistent winner.
They have a player, Jamal Murray, who is your dream
player because he plays at a different level in the postseason.
A lot of guys come down in the postseason like
they put up some glossy regular season numbers, and then
(01:07:51):
where are they won the lights or brightest. Jamal Murray
is the opposite. It's never made an All Star team,
he's never been All NBA, and yet we watch him
in the postseas like this guy should be a perennial
All Star. And then you have the best player in
the league in Jokic. So they're so beautifully constructed, and
I don't know, but the problem was one other problem.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
They're boring.
Speaker 1 (01:08:15):
I mean, Jokic is like Tim Duncan was. Tim Duncan
was a superstar at the highest level in the NBA.
He helped them win five NBA championships for years because
he was a contemporary of Kobe Bryant. I said, Duncan
has a better resume than Kobe does. He does, but
(01:08:36):
no one would ever mention like Tim Duncan one of
the greatest players of all time because he was boring.
Speaker 4 (01:08:41):
Yes, he uh fundamental.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
And that's what Jokich is.
Speaker 4 (01:08:45):
They are and the whole team is.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
You know, nowadays we hear these young players, we watch
young players.
Speaker 4 (01:08:52):
We just heard Greg Popovich.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
This season say that he's teaching like the basics of
fundamental basketball to some of these guys going into the NBA.
The entire Nuggets is like exactly a fundamental basketball team
led by Nicola Jokic.
Speaker 4 (01:09:07):
He is boring to some, not to me. I laugh
so much.
Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
In a good way when I watch Nicola Jokic, because
he goes at his own pace.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Yeah, and he does.
Speaker 4 (01:09:18):
I can tell you exactly what movie he's gonna make,
and yet you can't stop him. You still, you know
what he's gonna do.
Speaker 3 (01:09:23):
He's gonna take a couple steps here, he's gonna look around,
he's gonna do a little shot. If he's available, he's
gonna make it. If not, he's gonna dish it out.
You know exactly what he's gonna do, and you cannot
stop the man.
Speaker 4 (01:09:33):
Boring to some, not to me.
Speaker 3 (01:09:35):
I enjoy watching him because I cannot believe how successful
he is doing the most basic of moves. He's not
flashy in any way, but that's fine. He's got flashy
players around him. I don't think we give the credits,
or excuse me, the Nuggets credit. I don't think we
give Nicola Jokic credit. We don't give Jamal Murray credit.
We don't give Aaron Gordon credit as the enforcer because
(01:09:59):
you're not expecting Aaron to drop twenty nine points.
Speaker 4 (01:10:01):
That's what he did the last game. That's not what
you're expecting him to do. He is your enforcer.
Speaker 3 (01:10:06):
He is, to me like what the Warriors had in
Draymond Green in their prime. He is gonna go out
there and he is going to enforce whatever he needs.
Also this, ye're like Michael Porter junior. He has become
a solid third option. He may be streaky, but he
is streaky more often than not. Their entire team is
(01:10:26):
a weapon.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
You know why Gordon scored twenty nine in the last
game because he had Lebron James guarding him.
Speaker 2 (01:10:34):
Yep, yep, And this this is only makes sense.
Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Yeah, he can't play both ends of the corps.
Speaker 4 (01:10:40):
No, he can't. He does a driving brother play up,
He can't catch up on the other way.
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
Does Kevin Durant play any defense? Does Steph Curry play
any defense?
Speaker 4 (01:10:48):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:10:48):
No, No, he's too When you get along in years,
you got to sort of pick your poison, which is
why Vanderbilt has been a huge loss for the Lakers.
He gave him a little bit of defense, right, They
needed that with Lebron, but with the Denver Nuggets, and
let's not lose sight of Malone as a coach. I
was just going to bring them up because Michael Malone
(01:11:10):
is one of those coaches that he's like a pop.
He holds his team fire to you know that they
have to play at a certain level. You could send
some frustration during the course of the regular season their
uneven play. There were games where they inexplicably would play bad.
The telling sign to me was when they played better teams,
(01:11:30):
they seem to play a whole lot better. Remember the
Celtics were undefeated at home until Denver.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
Came into town.
Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
And now I'm sure that he's pleased that his team
almost toying with the Lakers in every one of these games.
That game, too, was beyond belief that the Lakers would
actually lose that game. And to watch Jamal Murray calmly
just take the ball, no time out, there was plenty
of He was twelve seconds left, take his time, get
(01:12:00):
to the point of the court where he wanted to be.
He backs off, shoots over a d all net at
the buzzer place goes absolutely nuts. That is a team
that has the confidence that comes from what we've been
talking about with the Lakers, the Clippers, the Suns, what's
their identity. The thing about the Nuggets is everyone on
(01:12:22):
that team has a clearly defined role. And if you
look at the Nuggets game in game out, yeah, you'll
have a game where Gordon maybe scores a little more,
especially when he's guarded by.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
Lebron James or not guarded by Lebron James. But that's
the sign of a team.
Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
The Nuggets were this way, go back in time with
the Celtics and Lakers showtime, everyone had a defined role
and that box scorer would look pretty much the same
game in a game out. That's when you know you've
arrived at a championship level.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
Yeah, Steve, you're not the only daddy out there. Michael
Malone is a daddy.
Speaker 5 (01:12:56):
He's a dad.
Speaker 4 (01:12:57):
He's a daddy one.
Speaker 3 (01:12:58):
And you see him on the sideline yelling coaching as
the game is going on.
Speaker 4 (01:13:04):
He's not just letting them do their thing.
Speaker 3 (01:13:06):
He is leading them play by play, and you don't
see a lot of coaches do that. He is animated
on the defensive side of the ball, telling them where
to go. And then I also like when Nicola Jokic
grabs the team in between you know, a player or
a timeout.
Speaker 4 (01:13:22):
They are on the same page from beginning to end.
They're on the same book.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
They're on the same page, and they're gonna close that
chapter together. They're I think they're unstoppable.
Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
Are gonna win?
Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
I believe they are.
Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
And after what happened to the Celtics in Game two
when Miami put up that barrage at THREESA, oh, Jimmy,
I mean right now, the Celtics will winning again. No
Jimmy Butler today for the heat. So Celtics, they're gonna
take care of the heat in the series. I don't
see anybody slowing down the Celtics in the East.
Speaker 3 (01:13:51):
But Miami should not have won that game. That Miami
should not have won that game. A Celtics should be embarrassed.
Speaker 1 (01:13:57):
If the Lakers lose tonight, aren't you gonna shd just
a slight peer. I don't know if the Clippers loose tomorrow, though,
you might.
Speaker 4 (01:14:04):
Oh no, shed lots of tears. You'll be here, you can.
You'll see me crying all.
Speaker 1 (01:14:09):
Right, coming up on the other side. Now that the
draft is coming gone, what's next in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
We'll break it down.
Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
This is Fox Sports Saturday, Steve Harvey, Monzie Bolanos. Here

rack dot Com Studios. Want to thank our crew to day.

Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
Mary mack you, hey, how are you, man?
Speaker 5 (01:14:36):
I'm doing good.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
She's twenty one years old now and she is just
blossomed and twenty first birthday.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
I mean, it's been It's like a game changer.
Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
She looks fly.
Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
I know you guys, she just seems very adult.
Speaker 4 (01:14:52):
Don't tell her that. No, she doesn't.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
No, she doesn't, well adult in a fun way. I
can remember the days.
Speaker 4 (01:15:00):
Yeah, I'm sure you can.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
Yes, I'm I'm reliving it with my kids, right, So
that's what I do.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
But great job.
Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
Mary mci is always thank you, and of course Patrick
is our steam producer that puts this whole thing together.
We always mentioned listen to our podcast if you like it,
definitely give kudos to our brilliant producer Patrick.
Speaker 2 (01:15:21):
Yes, oh thanks guys. I couldn't do this without you, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:15:25):
Though, That's how we feel about you.
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
You two are the real stars. He well, it's a
team effort. It's a team effort, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:15:31):
I'm a little bit disappointed that my son Sam Hartman
did not get drafted.
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
No but breaking news for you though, he did get drafted,
just not by the Jets. According to Tom Pellisero, he
is now signing with the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
So okay, but very good for Sam.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
And now this is, by the way, this is a
part of the draft situation where so much in the NFL,
I think, even more so than any other sport, success
in this league is about being in the right place
at the right time, right team, right system, and everything else.
And so a lot of guys who get drafted late
it actually can be a disadvantage because obviously, if you're drafted,
(01:16:14):
you are now locked into that team. If you don't
get drafted, then immediately and that's what's going on right now,
You're going to see all these guys signed as free
agents immediately a team sign I don't know outher words
to a dozen of these guys, you know, with the
chance of maybe I mean Austin Eckler was a free
agent signing by the Chargers, not drafted, turn out to
(01:16:34):
be a heck of a running back for several years,
and so you then sort of get to pick and choose, like,
all right, where would I have a chance? Obviously Jayden
Daniels is the quarterback of the future for the Commanders,
But if you're Sam Hartman, it's like, Okay, why not?
Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Why not? I mean, what if he doesn't pan out?
Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:16:52):
Or just what what if I can learn in this situation?
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
But about how about this? So go back to Washington
under their former name. Yes, they had the second pick
in the draft, and they took Robert Griffin the third,
and then in the same draft in the fourth round,
they took another quarterback named Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
Yeah, And it was like, why would you do that?
Speaker 1 (01:17:20):
I mean, you just used the second overall pick on
the Heisman Trophy winner RG three?
Speaker 2 (01:17:25):
Why would you.
Speaker 1 (01:17:25):
Draft another quarterback in the same draft in the fourth round?
RG three had a tremendous rookie season, beat out the
number one pick Andrew Luckf for Offensive Rookie of the Year,
and then he got hurt and before you know it,
the new quarterback of the team.
Speaker 2 (01:17:40):
Is Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 4 (01:17:41):
You like that?
Speaker 1 (01:17:42):
So, I mean, I'm not wishing any ill on Jadon Daniels.
I hope he has a Hall of Fame career, but
if you know body top wise, he could be breakable
like RG three was back.
Speaker 2 (01:17:54):
In the day.
Speaker 1 (01:17:55):
And now you have a little insurance in the flowing
locks of one Sam Heart.
Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
He does have flowing locks, man, Like, I want to
know what he puts in his hair to make it
look well.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
He gives credit to his mom for his hair.
Speaker 4 (01:18:11):
Right, I'm okay, then, mom, what but have you.
Speaker 1 (01:18:13):
Been watching these TikTok videos of these women? They are
absolutely nuts for this.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
Yeah, it's because he's got He's got like a GQ
look to him.
Speaker 4 (01:18:22):
That's why it's it's the hair, the facial hair.
Speaker 3 (01:18:25):
Knowing that he that rib was removed and he put
it in a necklace.
Speaker 4 (01:18:29):
It's like all these stories, you're just like, oh, he's
like a lumberjack, like.
Speaker 2 (01:18:33):
A GQ lumberjack exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
You know what I'm saying, Like, yeah, the ladies like that.
I'm not gonna lie to you.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
Not gonna lie to you apparently, So.
Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
Yeah, you're gonna hear a lot of names come off
the board in terms of signing a free agents. So
you know it's and and by the way, having gone
through this experience working with a former NFL team, when
they actually show up so and it doesn't take they're
like the next day, right, all said, you're introduced to
all the rookies that you draft in everything else, and
(01:19:04):
you get a look at them and the excitement of
showing up and expectations you you know, you.
Speaker 2 (01:19:10):
Never know, you never know, you just never I.
Speaker 4 (01:19:13):
Think you hit you. You hit it on the head
where you said.
Speaker 3 (01:19:15):
It's like opportunity, luck and situation, all of that has
to happen, and you just can be in the right
place at the right time. And not just with football,
but in life. You know what I'm saying, Just say life,
opportunity meets luck and situation and you just got to
be ready for it.
Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
Why do you look at me and say, boy, is
there a prime example of that. There's no explaining any
of this. This is the luckiest individual.
Speaker 3 (01:19:38):
You know, the fact that you did not think you
were gonna end up working in sports, you historian, and
then you just landed a job with the Raiders before.
Speaker 4 (01:19:46):
I was born, and then you're here, You are here.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
You are luckiest guy around.
Speaker 4 (01:19:51):
Luckiest guy around.
Speaker 1 (01:19:52):
No, I mean I'm very excited for all these players
in the NFL. And I have to take a step
back when I when I watch the big stage, you know,
in Detroit, and you know, two hundred and fifty thousand
people a day showing up each day and just standing there, I.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
Don't understand why are you there? What is what is that?
Speaker 1 (01:20:11):
Other than you just say well, I was there, it
was part of it, but you can't see anything.
Speaker 3 (01:20:17):
It's becoming rarely here any day. Yeah, it's becoming a
sport holiday.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
Which is crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:20:22):
Never not in a million and it doesn't even compare
to the NBA Draft in any way, shape or form.
Like it really is becoming a holiday. People were waiting,
salivating for the NFL drop to get here, even though
we all knew who was gonna go first.
Speaker 4 (01:20:35):
It was just like the excitement of it. I couldn't
believe the numbers.
Speaker 2 (01:20:39):
I have watched the evolution of this league over many
many years and.
Speaker 1 (01:20:43):
Not in a million years ect ever, you know, and
gambling was a big part of it, but now just
so much more as a culture in this country. Another
draft is in the books. We have a busy week
coming up with the NBA playoffs. For all the news
keep it right here. This is Fox Sports Radio. Ye
