Speaker 1 (00:00):
Please don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio living the
dream once again here on a fully loaded sports Sunday.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
This is Fox Sports Sunday, and we are here in
the Fox Sports Radio studios of VJ. It has been
a Fourth of July weekend. That's a great part about
having the Fourth of July on a Friday. So you've
been enjoying the entire weekend out there celebrating our great country.
How is your Fourth of July holiday?
Speaker 3 (00:28):
My fourth of July holiday was outstanding. I took my
son into the pool for the first time.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
So you know, my wife took pictures and videos that us.
He had a life vests on and we started off.
He walks down into the pool. He's good with that,
but once he can't fill his feet is when he
clitches on the daddy.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
No, people don't know this. Your son is twenty three y.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I'm not gonna let Steve play you like that, bro,
I'm not gonna let him, do you like that?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
So no, my son's five five years old. Oh but
and you met him a few weeks he came in here. Yeah,
thank you man.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
At one point I got them on my back and
then we swim all the way out to the ten
feet area, and once he had like a little tug
boat next to him, he could just keep playing with. Sure,
he kind of forgot that he couldn't touch the body.
It was just it was just one of those damn moments.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
It was fourth of July. I grilled a whole bunch
of food. We have people come over by the pool,
went to a nice bottle of Apisado tequila, and uh
sat in a jacuzie till about a yeah, oh we're
at the jacuzzi almost midnight. Yeah, after swimming all day.
So it was it was a great holiday.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah. Yeah, it's you know, it's my birthday and no
one knows this about the fourth of July. Being born
on the fourth of July. Is is is a cool
day from the sense that it's an easy day to remember. Yeah,
it's the only holiday. It's actually Independence Day, but no
one calls it that. They always say it's the fourth
of July July. So it's really the only holiday that
I mean, outside of maybe Cinco Demayo that where you
(01:53):
call it by the date. Yeah, yeah, sure, of the
July is one of those holidays where no one says
in the it's fourth of July.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
So how was that hat sharing having a birthday? Because
camera my son camera his birthday. He was born Christmas morning,
so yeah, so we tell him Mary Birthday because we
have to do both.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yea, we have to celebrate. How was that having a
birthday was a big holiday hundred years ago? The great
thing was fireworks were more prevalent in those days. Now
there's a lot of restrictions on fireworks, so on the
Fourth of Jly, we'd always have a fireworks show. And
of course when you're a little kid, you're like, wow,
I mean they're really celebrating my birthday. I mean, that
wasn't about you, Steve. But then as I grew older,
(02:33):
the thing about working in our industry is you find
out you work holidays. Oh and I worked. I worked
every holiday. So you work Thanksgiving, your work Christmas. You
as you become adult, you're never with anybody because you're
working all the time. Because these are big sports days.
The Fourth of July is no exception. And I did
work on the Fourth of July show, but they were
cool at the TV stage. Came out with this oversized cupcake,
(02:57):
you know, all the red, white and blue, everything else.
It was a wonderful day. So hope everybody out there
is enjoying their Fourth of July weekday and God bless
our country. All right, So we got a lot to
talk about today. By the way, as usual, John Paul
Morosi is going to join us a little bit later on.
I was at the Dodgers game Wednesday. This was the
night that Kershaw got his three thousand career strikeout. Fortunately
(03:21):
for me, I actually didn't see it. The reason was
so I was there that my TV station said we
need you back here at eight point fifteen because there
was a rehearsal for this was pre plan. I thought, okay,
we're okay, first pitches at seven to ten. I did
a live shot in the four o'clock to five o'clock
six of all the pre you talk to Dave Roberts,
(03:42):
the whole gang, and I thought, you know, I'll see
three innings. He should be able to get three strikeouts
and three innings against the lowly White Sox. And then
the first inning man he was two feet away from
giving about three run bond that would have made it
four nothing, and it was obvious he was even throwing
eighty eight miles an hour over the middle of the
plate and they were hammering him or he was bouncing
(04:03):
pitches trying to get those guys to swing. They weren't
in the service. So after the second ending, when he
still had zero strikeouts, I'm like, I'm out of here.
So I didn't get that eyewitness. It turned out to
be a lot of drama out there. Where were you you?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Let?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Where were you? Where'd you go?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
You to go get a Dodger dog or something and
one of those big ass hats with a bunch.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Of fried here, where'd you go?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
No?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
No, no, I was there working for television. I was
in the press box. So for the first two winnings
because I had to get back to k T l A.
I had no Oh, you had to get back to
my right was because we were transit. Yeah, I was. Oh.
I was hoping that he would get it done early
so I could eye witness it. I did get a
(04:44):
Yamamoto bubblehead.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Was that.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Anytime you get a bibblehead, I just think, listen, you
just collect them. You have some good ones, and you
got some guys that never played like, it's just.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
What it is. So JP is going to be joining us.
And then we got a special guest, good friend of yours.
Three time NBA champion with three different franchises, Danny Green
is going to be joining us coming up in our
next hour.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Tar hill Man, my guy man. I always loved Daily
Green followed him in college and high school. When he
went to Carolina, also looked after my nephew. Kendall Marshall,
who played point guard at Carolina win the Bob Coozie
Award his sophomore year, which goes to the best point
guard in the nation.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Was All American.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
He's on that team with Zeller, Harrison Barnes, Reggie Bullok,
the team that everybody thought was gonna meet Anthony Davis
in Kentucky. Kendall breaks his risk against Creton on that
cheap file. They get to the lad eight against Kansas.
They're up with three minutes to go eight, but they
don't have a point guard to steady the ship. Kansas
comes back. That's the Mario Chalmers. That's the Super Mario
Chalmers teams.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I was there in San Antonio because UCLA was there.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
That year or so.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
And then a quick story so the next year when
Danny won the national championship in nine with hands Bro
and that whole team. It's like Detroit. I was. It
was my first year doing the Monday through Friday national
show here in Fox Sports Radio with Chris Myers. This
is classic. It's one of those one of those stories.
So my boss Don Martin at the time, we had
(06:05):
just started and so he's trying to catch up on
what kind of commitments we have with these national shows,
and so the I was not going to go to
the final four the year was in Detroit. And the
reason me and I basically I've done so many final
fours over the years, but unless UCLA was there, that
was my sort of my food and they had been
there the last three years. So it was not planning
(06:25):
to go to Detroit. So the semis were on Saturday,
and it's going to be a championship game between North
Carolina and Michigan State on Monday. And so Sunday morning,
I get a call from Don Martin. My man, we
got a problem. I go, what's that done? I need
to fly you tonight. What time you get off TV tonight?
I go, like eleven thirty, I got you on him
(06:46):
overnight to Detroit. We need to be out there. I go,
we as Meyer's coming. No, he's busy. I'm just going
to have you do it. So I go on a
red eye to Detroit, go to this radio station to
do the sh show. It says, welcome Chris Myers with
the name the spell. My name's nowhere to be seen.
I do the radio show. I go out to Ford Field,
(07:08):
which is the first time they'd actually opened the entire
you know, indoor arena for the final four. I had
great seats, you know, sitting courtside for that game. And
then of course it was a North Carolina blow out
of the Michigan and then I got I'm coming out
of the arena and guys like, hey, Hartman, it was.
It was magic Irvin, IRV as I call it, and
(07:28):
I go IRV. That was tough day for your spartans.
And then as soon as the game was over, I
had to go right back to the airport and come back.
And I was on the air Tuesday, so there was
I did a red eye, never slept, did a game,
went back. That's how it worked the business.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Speaking of that Carolina Michigan State game, Carolina, people forget
how dominant OH Tournament was for Carolina. They won every
game by twenty blew like they blow, they blew. You
talk about Cycle t Tyler hands were all American. Danny Green,
who would have on here, good friend, three time champion,
don't forget about a guy like Wayne Ellington as he
was lu was putting up twenty every game in the tournament.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Like it was not That team was loaded. But that
was all came back after they lost the Kansas. Absolutely,
that was the thing.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
That's why they all came back because they were like okay,
and they could all went and went, you know, lottery picks,
and most of them all went lottery picks anyway the
next year, especially Cycle team. But yeah, man, that that
that that team was just that's one of the underrated
Carolina teams. People don't talk about life, especially as far
as a tournament run.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Very rarely.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
I could think about UNLV or Duke in the early
night where they like UNLV right that year they it
was it was almost like why were we even watching
these games?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Let's just well I just put them in a championship game.
Radio wise, my first Final four was the next year
in Indianapolis when that came back with the undefeated record
and they it was stolen in that Duke game. But
that was a lot of wound out how Anthony got
called for two late fouls that found them out of
the game when they were up four and they lost
their floor leader. And yeah, that was when they did
(08:56):
not want Tark to win back to back. Nch respectful
to you just said that because you don't hear that.
A lot a lot of people don't know how good
Greg Anthony was. Thank you, Damn Hunt Stacy. I mean
they were a loaded team. George Jachells had replaced David
Butler as their center from the year before. But yeah,
(09:18):
Greg Anthony was love and especially you know with you know,
this was Hurly on the other side. You needed Anthony
on the floor and they were in control and Anthony
was controlling it. And literally back to back calls to
foull him out of the game with three and a
half minutes, we all knew what that was about.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Also, very very steady point guard in his NBA career,
all those Nick years going against Jordan, going to like
Greg Anthony. Greg Anthony does not get the like I'm
surprised you said that.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
First of all, it's up here. I mean, the guy
is a smart cout, yes right, Okay, yeah, I know raout.
When you have a guy running the show for you,
like the coach on the floor, right, you gotta be smart.
You don't even these days. I got this coach, I
got the plays. I mean, he's smart. There's a reason
I had a great broadcast cord. It's a smart guy,
(10:08):
all right. Coming up on the other side, we got
a lot to cover today on a very very busy day.
We got a lot of NBA free agency to get to.
We're gonna start to do it piece by piece. We're
gonna rust of this because there's a lot of things
in progress around the NBA. You know what I want
to focus in on first though, VJ. I want to
get to that Eastern Conference right because everything I mean,
(10:30):
we could say the Lebron all that stuff down the road,
but I want to get to this Eastern Conference right
now as it's unfolding, teams are unloading players. You know
what exactly are we looking at it? So we headed
into the twenty five to twenty six season for the
Eastern Conference in the NBA, We're gonna break it down.

By the way, I do I don't know if you
saw this VJA. The Kevin Durant trade actually has been
completed today and it involved seven teams. Seven teams were
(12:05):
involved in the trade, six players, including Durant, Jalen Green,
Dylan Brooks, Clint Capella, some of the guys out there.
Seven seven teams. It was the Hawks, the Nets, the Warriors,
the Rockets, the Lakers, the Timberwolves, and the Suns. Thirteenth
draft picks were involved. Members some cash as well. So
(12:26):
that's a deal that is absolutely done. In the meantime, though,
I want to focus a little bit here on the
East situation. Yes, okay, yes, so we've had the I mean,
when you think about where the Boston Celtics were going
into this past season, coming off that championship, and all
of a sudden, people are looking at a nucleus of
(12:46):
a team they can make a run for a little bit, right.
We were looking at the Celtics like, okay, we've had
this carousel of champions. Celtics are going to change. That
did not happen. Of course, Tatum out for the year.
Next thing you know, they're dumping left and right.
Speaker 7 (13:01):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
And they knew they were gonna have to anyway. They
talked about that during the show. But now the question is,
are they gonna dump more Jaylen Brown? I mean why,
That's the thing. You just have to give me a.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Good reason why you want to dump a former finals MVP. Yes,
a champion, a heart and soul of your team, A
good guy like you. Ever hear anything bad about the guy?
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Guy? All they when he won the final? Yeah, so
it's it's you. I'm the guy's Like.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Okay, if you're telling me, hey, VJ, what do you
think they should do with Jayleen Brown? Okay, you gotta
give me the contingency plan. Okay, you're trading Jaylen Brown
for what?
Speaker 4 (13:39):
Though?
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Because we both agree, picks mean nothing in the NBA anymore.
If you're competing for championships now, for a team that's
got to build, okay, but for for championship caliber teams,
picks mean nothing. I will get rid of every pick
to win now, because, as I said a few weeks ago,
the NBA to me is the P and the p
it's the pressure and the patience, and some times people
(14:01):
let pressure make them not have patience, and the NBA
your window. Now it's been proven seven different champions okay,
in the last seven seasons and in the last seven seasons,
the champion can't even get past the second round. So
and a guy like me crazy enough is to say, hey, man,
look their window. Okay, see them for example, they got
(14:21):
a three year window. Guys, this is not a dynasty.
This is not gonna go on for a long time.
I don't think they'll get to the finals next year
because the last seven years history has told me that
the reigning champion, they don't get back, they don't get
out of the second round, they don't even get to
the conference finals. So if you're gonna do moves like that,
just tell me that, Hey, we fought hard for four years.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Think about it.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
We went to four straight conference finals, two NBA finals
up to one on the Warriors lost that one, but
bounce back, finally got that ring. And now our star
Tears's achilles. And you know why we don't want to
pay holiday. We don't want to pay Porzingis. And hey,
hey we're we're still champions rough recent We'll get back there,
you know, the next five or six years.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
If you tell, I mean that's the game plan. Didn't
trade him, but if not, don't. On paper. Right now,
they still have the highest payroll in the league going
into the new seasons, work to do. Derek White obviously
has his long term deal. He's making thirty million plus now.
Jalen Brown, I mean he's got three years left after
this year. I locked in at fifty three, fifty seven,
sixty one and sixty four million. So again, you can
(15:22):
you can tinker and sort of just dangle out there,
make us an unbelievable offer, something we can't refuse, can't move.
I I agree him. But if we see the odds
on the Celtics without Tatum, obviously they are they're falling, okay,
So and then you got the Pacer situation where you know,
the Pacers came out of nowhere again. Rick Carlisle deserves
(15:42):
a world of credit, Alibert, and obviously a world of
credit for playing. Honestly, he was the star of this postseason.
He was was no he thank you, he was. He
had the game when he shot. Yes. I mean, if
you talk about clutch player Chow the play in the
guarden like his dad and Yon, it's like real talk.
He was the guy. It's in. None of the OKAC guys,
even I say, none of them will be remembered individually
(16:05):
as a team you win, but no, this was the
Halliburton postseason. You can't stand that sea Well, I mean
because like I said that, when I when I when,
I have to admit, okay, that I did not really see, okay,
see all that much in the night. And so I'm
just looking at the numbers. You know, I'm a numbers guy,
right right. Sixty eight wins, winning by an average thirteen
(16:28):
points a game, sixteen games better than any other team
in the West, which was definitely the superior conference in
the league this year. So they on paper, they had
one of the ten greatest regular seasons and NBA history.
So I'm thinking they're gonna steam roll through the playoffs.
The Lakers went down early, you know, Houston, we never
really body in two, and so who's gonna start?
Speaker 5 (16:51):
You know.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
The Warriors were an older team, you know, I just
I looked at and they should steam roll. They struggle
with Denver, you know, they lose that first game at home,
they go set in that series, and still I thought, Okay,
they righted the ship. Indiana, We're talking the fourth seed
in an Eastern conference that was considerably weaker than the West.
You know, you remember me, I was like, should I
(17:12):
pick a sweep. Fine, I'll give him a game. I'll
give him, I'll give him a games. I'll give the
Pacers a game. And then it goes seven, and I'll
look and I'm with you. I mean, if halla Burton
had not gotten hurt, he was off to a hot
start in Game seven, at the very least, that thing
could have gone down to the wire, and that definitely
would have favored the Pacers because they were used to
(17:33):
close games. They knew how to win close games. Okay,
se did not, with the exception of the Big Game
four when Shay Gilgen's allies that I still have that
game so much. He scored fifteen points in the last
three minutes and ended the game with zero assists. Taken
over that game. Took over that game, scotos, No, I'm not,
but we'll leave it. But where are the Pacers right now?
(17:55):
Obviously you lose your big man, as you know, Milwaukee
ends up signing him. So Miles Turner goes, there, where
are we with the Pacers? This is just an aberration.
Are they still in the conversation?
Speaker 3 (18:07):
No, they're not. They can't be in the conversation. Your
best player is out for the next year. Okay, then
your big man Stretch four to five guy, you let
get away. And I did some research tro this because
I just want I didn't want to come on, Aaron,
just go how do you let this happen?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
The owner, from all.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
The sources I've talked to, for everybody that I've talked
to and as well, how could why would they let
this happen? They all gave me the same two words,
luxury tax. The owner just does not want to pay,
which means to me, you just don't want to win.
The Warriors owners kept paying the luxury tax over and
over and over and over, and their deal was, if
(18:43):
you keep getting us to the finals and are and
hanging banners, we can give a darn about that luxury
tax because the billions keep adding to the value. In
the long term. This is not a sprint. This is
a marathon when you own a pro sports franchise. So
the Pacers Pro Sports front office and owners ship just said, no,
we don't have our guy next year, so we'll just
(19:04):
let you know. We'll let our stretch four to five
center that was very intrigral, was the longest tenured pacer
for ten years. The guy that broke down when they
won the Eastern Conference final. He only won that showed
some tears because he had been there. He had been
when it was bad. You gotta think about p how
many assistants he's been through coaches, he's been through trainers,
He's been through ups and down. Stuff The city says,
stuff the fan say when he's out in about.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
For a decade.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
I finally get to the Eastern Conference finals. I finally
get to the finals. And I'm an intrical I'm the
heart and soul of his team. Hallibur's the best guy,
he's the start, but I'm the heart and sold. There's
a difference. And you don't want to pay the luxury
tax to keep me? Okay, hey the bucks. You just
let Lopez go off to LA and get up with
Monsey's clippers.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
You got a spot for me there to go along
side Gianna's. Yep, come on up. Here's the pen sign,
all right? The Janna situation, all right? So you know
the Lillard I mean, I feel good for Damian Lillard,
so do I You know he never wanted to be there.
He's gonna be paid guaranteed the next five seasons twenty
two point five million dollars Bobby bud I mean it's exactly.
I mean, they just they even it out. They were able,
(20:03):
you know, so it's it's it's a hit, but it's
not a critical hit. Twenty two point five million a
year for the next five years guarantee for Lillard as
he rehabs decides whether or not he wants to play again,
that's going to be up to him. But this whole
deal came down to the idea that we've got to
do something to impress upon Yannis after getting bounced three
(20:23):
straight years in the first round of the playoffs that
we're serious and wanted to keep him and try to
build the team around him. We'll get to the you know,
the Lucas situation the Lakers very similar later in the show.
But this is where they're at. I mean, we both
have assumed that Jannis is going to demandage Rake get
out of there. We speculated about Miami. There are a
lot of different places Jannis could end up. He's still
(20:46):
one of the absolute leap players in the country in
the NBA. He's on the books for fifty seven million,
sixty two million the following year, and then he gets
his player option. So you've got to get him signed.
This is the same thing with Luca with the Lakers.
You gotta get Yanni's signed long term. If you're the
Milwaukee Bucks, do you think they did enough getting a
(21:08):
quality guy a Miles Turner replacing a player they're doubtful
that he would ever play against, certainly at the level
we're used to in Damian Lillard. Is that enough to
impress upon Yannis to stay in Milwaukee.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
No, I don't think so at all, Because when you
make a trade because you lose a guy, when you
sign a guy because you lose a guy, the first
thing I want to look at is, Okay, did you
improve yourself or did you just kind of stay at
the water level or did you even kind of drop
your nose below the water level where now you got
to put a snorkel on.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
I don't think MOUs Turner is it's better for them
than brook Lopez. I thought Brook Lopez is. He's a
better defender. Brook Lopez has been an All NBA defensive guy.
He's made All defensive teams. He shoots the three just
like Mouse Turner does. It's almost the same guy, except
for Miles takes a lot of bad a little, a
(21:57):
little yeah, But y'ah, Yannis don't care about age. I
just need somebody that's gonna help me win. I don't
care if they're fifty five or fifteen. I just need
somebody that's gonna help me win. Both those guys got
enough experience. So dange thing is like, can you produce
on the court? I thought the Bucks, and I still
say this if like you're saying, okay, they gotta get
Yani sign If it's any question, I would have been
(22:20):
picked up the phone and called the MAVs, and I
said this when they found that the MAVs got the
first pick. If I'm the Bucks, I call the MAVs
and I say, can we have that number one pick?
Because if you lose Jannie, you gotta start over anyway.
Why not start over with Cooper flagging a number one
overall pick? Trade Giannis get a bunch of ages because
you're gonna have to reset anyway.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
So think about this.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
If Yannis asks for a trade next week, it doesn't
matter that you saw Miles Turner, it has no effect
at all. But if you have moved Jannis and he
got the number one pick from Dallas, you think Dallas
would have said, Oh, yeah, we don't want to add
Jannis to Kyrie. It's eight Come on, Like, I just
I just think this thing is far gone. That doesn't
mean he's not gonna play for him this year, Steve,
(23:02):
but I think if he does, it'll be more kind
of Okay, let me show face, Let me show up
and be and be a good guy, because I'm gonna
say it publicly in a month or so that I
want to be traded. But let me show up and
let me play. But I just think he might be
mentally checked out? Why would you stay? And Doc Rivers
is still the head coach?
Speaker 2 (23:16):
That's all I need to know, all right, So Boston out, yes,
Indiana out, yes, Milwaukee up in the air with the
honest situation. So who should we be looking at to
win the Eastern Conference? One team that just hired a
new coach is in the conversation, or were until they
hired that coach. But first let's find out what is
(23:39):
trending right now. Monsei is here. So how is your
Fourth of July weekend going?
Speaker 8 (23:46):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (23:47):
It's boring. I mean I didn't hear anything.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
I worked on fourth of July and then I played
resident Emil all night.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
So I don't.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
You didn't get no barbie, nobody gave you a play.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
You ain't get no mac and cheese, no baked bees,
no potatoes, no barbecue.
Speaker 8 (23:59):
Enough for half that I don't even want, right the
things you just said, No, I don't.
Speaker 7 (24:03):
But I like potatoes out. What did you say?
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Potato? Did you know? Guys? Did you know? Guys? In
this country, potato salad is the number one food eating
on the fourth of July.
Speaker 8 (24:15):
So I never understood potato salad or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
It depends on what kind of potato.
Speaker 8 (24:22):
You have that outside and it's cold, and it's hot,
and it's mayonnaise.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Oh you keep it cold now, Now hold up, wherever
leave a potato salad outside you need.
Speaker 8 (24:32):
You're bringing it back and forth on the fridge, because
when you know, when you have your food all out.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
You found out absolutely, you let everybody know. Hey, guys,
don't let it take in the sun.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
If you want potato salad coast flaw, it's in the fridge.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Absolutely, And it's different.
Speaker 3 (24:44):
Times you got southern potatoes out, you got must of
potato salad.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Relative. So when you see that, when you see the
potato salad bowl, and it's bubbling from the heat outside.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
I don't even need it to be I don't need
it to be warm. I just it looks not good.
I could have mac and cheese any day. It doesn't
have to be fourth of July.
Speaker 7 (25:04):
Gab it any day, So you know what I mean.
Speaker 8 (25:07):
I so it's been fine, but like I'm over fireworks
at four in the morning.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
I see exit fireworks any day.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Guys, Guys, I don't know everybody listening out there for days.
I just see or do we have more fireworks going
off this weekend than I've ever heard? I mean, I
went out froight because I worked TV Friday, was walking
in the Hollywood area. I thought it was gunshot like
the rapid fire it was, and it was a constant.
Speaker 7 (25:37):
Why why are we still doing this?
Speaker 5 (25:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:40):
I get why it bothers people, but it's just something
I just always bother the pets. You're gonna do It's true,
they're gonna, but they're gonna do it this one night.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Just try to try to get through. It's not one
night around here. Was I heard it last night?
Speaker 7 (25:55):
That's for sure?
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Zone out by so calling resident evil? Yeah, I said,
solid cola.
Speaker 7 (26:01):
Oh you know I'm trying to get better. I'm not
very good. It's up setting, all right.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
Let's check in on baseball here, guys. The Red Sox
are shutting out the Nationals for zero. Top of the
third inning, Trevor Story with a two run shot, extending
Boston's lead. Mike Trout with a home run puts the
Angels on the scoreboard first. They're edging the Blue Jays
one zero top of the fourth inning. The Marlins losing
at home to the Brewers to zero. Bottom of the
fourth Austin Wells with the home run has put the
(26:27):
Yankees on the scoreboard first. In the Subway series against
the Mets, one zero is the score after three innings.
Byron Buxton has hit a home run for the Twins.
They're up on the raise one zero bottom with the
second inning about to start in Minnesota, while the Orioles
completed a three game sweep of the Braves, winning today
two to one. Jackson Holiday Holiday with the two run shot.
At Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaaz in his fourth round match, he
(26:49):
lost his first set in a tiebreak, but one of
his second set six games to three. Taylor Fritz American
and five seed he's headed to the quarterfinals. In NFL News, Dallas,
Cowboys wide receiver Cavante Turpin was arrested this morning for
a weapon and marijuana charges. His bond was listed at
five hundred dollars. I'm gonna say he's gonna be fine.
Later today. That Goon Kakov Gold Cup final between US
(27:11):
and Mexico seven Eastern on Fox TV back and.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
We're going to talk about that the rest of the show. Yes, nice,
let's go boys. You say, let's go go USA, I
mean only should win, right they own in Mexico. Recent
I know, Thank you, mon See. We'll check in with
you a little bit later on once again, Harbin and
Husky here in the Fox Sports radio studios. So one
(27:37):
of our we have the perfect picks, which are coming
up in the next hour. And one of the ones
we had a few weeks ago was the over under
on how long it would take for the Knicks to
hire a coach. Last week we're still speculating. Yeah, I mean,
this thing went on and on predictably. I mean again,
knee jerk reaction to get rid of TIBs makes no
(27:59):
sense after getting him to the Eastern Conference finals for
the first time. In twenty five years. And so we're
going over the cannons. Remember I was talking about Van Gundy,
and you know, I knew he wasn't gonna hire, but
you know, I'm thinking, like, it's got to be someone
that understands New York. And then you hire Mike Brown.
I mean, I'm just like, come on again, Mike Brown
when he came to the Lakers, nice guy was not
(28:21):
cut out for the LA market. Cleveland. Fine, you know
that'll work for a Mike Brown. LA was too much
for him, and New York will be too much for him.
Because again, it's not like he's taken over some twenty
four and fifty eight team trying to find their way.
He's taking over a team that made it to the
Eastern Conference finals. And with Boston down and Indiana down,
(28:44):
there's still a lot of people that's saying, all right, now,
this is the time for the Knicks to get to
the NBA Finals for the first time since nineteen ninety nine.
So if Mike Brown didn't know already, that's the mindset
of the Knicks fans. We felt like we's gone as
far as we go. With TIBs. Celtics are out of
the way Pacers are out of the way, so all
(29:04):
you just get us to the finals. Mike Brown is
not the right guy to deal with the pressures he's
gonna be under with high expectations for the New York Knicks.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
And this what makes the TIBs firing even worse because
you had Jeff Van Gunny.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Alright, cool, I didn't.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
I didn't.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
I didn't like it, but all right, everybody got their
own guy. But I thought you got Boonholzer out there.
You have Mike Malone, and you have Vogel, and those
are the three guys I'm looking at. Said, Okay, these
guys have had to handle big markets. They've had to
handle big time superstars. Even though Joe Kitsch is a
quiet superstarits you still got to handle it. You don't
see the guy's got some type of an ego. You're wrong, Okay,
(29:45):
all these guys do. And you had an opportunity to
bring somebody and in Vogel. Vogo had to deal with
the bubble, Vogo had to deal with Lebron, Vogo had
to deal with La like Vogo and now and he
was coming from Indiana, right, He's coming.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
From a very small, easy gold market.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
That fits a guy like Rick Carlisle perfectly, and he
was able to get it done, to handle it. And
you go out and you hire a guy that now
makes the firing look even worse. It's the same analogy
I used as far as losing Lopez for the books
and then bringing in Miles Turner. Did you get better
if you took a pole? Who's the better coach? Mike
Brown or Thibodeau? I guarantee you it maybe fifty one
(30:23):
to forty nine, I don't care, but I guarantee you
Tim's is gonna win that pole. So, in my opinion,
you hired a guy who's not as good as the
coach you fired. That makes the firing' even worse. It
makes you look even worse. But what do we expect, Steve?
It's the Nickelboxers the whole point.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
And also Mike Brown knows because they are very public
about reaching out the coaches that were employed by other
teams and got turned down by all of them to
do interviews. You know it's Mike Brown. What was I
the fifth choice? The sixth choice word? No down, He's
like the ninth or tenth because those are the names.
Just we know about exactly.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
I'm sure when they sit in an office and body
cell phones is out and there's no social media being
no live streams being done, there's a live about twenty guys.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
His name wasn't on it. So again, when Mike Brown
walks into that Knicks locker room, they're looking at him
like he's not gonna inspire this, this, this, and again
you said, all right, this is the Knicks. This why
sororiganizations are perennially coming up short because of their overall management.
(31:26):
All right, so.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Quick, curveball though, you bring in Mike Brown, the big
swerve of all of this could possibly believe and you said,
we'll get to it later.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
But who they might be trying to make.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
A move for, well, who has a connection and it
would be so clutch to plant this, Hey hire him?
Speaker 2 (31:48):
Okay, okay, you see where I'm going though, right, just
just curveball you conspiracy there, you know how you and
I do. Again, we'll get into the little Brown thing
in depth a little bit later, but let's stay this,
stay here for a second, yes, sir, okay, So let's
just say, because we know this, the Lakers right now
with Lebron and we'll get into more depth on this.
(32:08):
But they're not going to publicly say we're trying to
trade Lebron, but they're listening. People know. I think that's
because he has an expiring deal. Okay, it's a fifty
two point six million dollar expiring deal, so it's one
of those deals where Okay, So if you're the New
York Knicks, this is the problem obviously the Lakers have
(32:29):
in trying to trade Lebron is that he's under contract
for just one year. How much capital are you going
to give up to get a forty one year old
Lebron James for one season? Unless you think like a
team like the Knicks won a championship since nineteen seventy three.
Speaker 7 (32:45):
If you were to.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
Ask Nick fans this question, you bring in Lebron, you
win a championship this year, and then you will suck
for the next ten to fifteen years like we've sucked
for fifty years. Ye yes, I will take it, take
it to win a championship. So if you do have
that mindset, especially in the East, when the only team
(33:07):
really left standing right now is Cleveland, and Cleveland did
not prove themselves in the postseason. So you look at
who else, Boston, no Pacers, know who else?
Speaker 3 (33:19):
This is gonna be a little better. Orland will be
a little better, but they're not a contenter. The Pistols
would be a little better, but they're not a contenter.
I'm just being real, they're not contenters. They'll be better.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Okay, I'm gonna give you a little time to think
about this. I'm gonna think about this. What would the
Knicks offer? Oh, to make a deal easy to get
Lebron And by the way, Lebron technically has a no trade.
He would welcome the Knicks in a heartbeat. He knows
going to the Eastern Conference. Look at the landscape as
we'd laid it out, it's like a sure ticket to
(33:50):
the NBA Finals. But what exactly do they have to
give up? And it would be enough to actually derail
the Knicks. I mean, if you give up two much?
All right, we'll break it down. This is Fox Sports Sunday.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Harvin Husky Fox Sports Sunday. Here in the Fox Sports
Radio studios. All right, it's good.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
Right.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
So VJ brought up the point about the Mike Brown,
and I was looking at a different angle because again
I got to know Brike Brown a little bit when
he coached the Lakers, and he was just overwhelmed. Remember
he was fired five games into his second ear five games.
I mean, who gets fired after five games of a season,
But he got fired five games into his second ear
(34:49):
as the coach of the Lakers because he wasn't up
for the job, just wasn't good. Yeah, period, all right,
So why would the Knicks and you all of a
sudden brought up his coach back in the day. Remember
the first one for Lebron to the finals and seven
as coach was Mike Brown. Mike Brown. Okay, So now
going into the break, we've talked about making a trade,
(35:11):
and I'm looking at the Knicks roster and I'm like, wow,
this is this is a laid out a lot to have.
So the way NBA trades work, it's got to be
sally for salary. And again they'll put a certain price
tag on draft picks. But if you're the Lakers right now,
you're trying to build some depth around Luca right right.
(35:32):
So if I were to say, all right, you get
Britta Lebron and I hand you Cal Bridges. Yep, Josh
hart he has to be in it. He's the first name.
And I'll throw in salary wise and again Bridges has
an expiring deal. Hearts under contract for a couple of years,
and then I'll throw in uh, Mitchell Robinson another expiring contract.
(35:55):
Those three contracts add up to about fifty six millions,
so they offset the salary of Lebron this year. You
don't even have to do draft picks. So you get
a couple of expiring contracts. If you're little Lakers and
you get a guy, you won. Anyway, we know they
wont Josh Hart. Everyone loves Josh Harten he was a Laker.
They could get Josh Hart back. So add those three
(36:17):
guys to what they already have on the Laker roster
right now. Now, all of a sudden, you start looking
at Wow, Okay, so they got a little more depth.
It's not a championship caliber team. Now for the next
you still have Karl Anthony Towns, I still have Jalen Brunson,
you have an Anobi, and you have Lebron. James is
(36:41):
that enough with a few other pieces, minor pieces to
get the Knicks over the hump and come out of
the Eastern Conference to get to the NBA Finals.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Absolutely, because of the way that the Eastern Conference is
constructed right now. And that's why I'm taking the conspiracy
theory road on this because it just makes sense. And
even though I'm not a Lebron James guy at all,
the one thing I've always said since I've been in
this business, he is one of the most calculated, smartest
pro athletes we've ever seen. Whether you like it or not,
(37:12):
that's just the fact this thing just feels so orchestrated
from behind the curtain weeks ago. Because number one, again,
why would you hire Mike Brown? It makes no sense
unless Lebron will now come out. Once he founds out
the Lakers do want to move him and say, well, yeah,
I want to trade anyway.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
So it doesn't make it look like he's being traded.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
It makes it look like he's been he wants out
because it's always got to look a certain way with him.
And then you and I go through to listen, we
look at this. Josh Hart's definitely the first name you
got to get out of there and then bridges expiring contract,
and like you said, Thrown Robinson, Hey that gives the
Lakers a backup big man because they did just get
DeAndre Ayton, which I'm not a huge on, but hey,
it's a seven foot kid that can you know if
he gets his head together.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
I defended him in Phoenix Guys on Radio, and I
defended him in in Phoenix. The problem again with DeAndre
Aiden is simply this. He is one of those He
has averaged double doubles all seven years in the NBA,
but his best year was his second year in Phoenix exactly.
And then you start doing the analytics and you realize
that the numbers are deceiving. It's cute. The problem for
(38:13):
eight and the Lakers is because they got him for
the right price tag. But if he does have a
breakout year, he'll opt out right and you're gonna have
to pay so yeah. But and if he doesn't pan out,
then you're stuck with him for two years exactly. So
it's really a lose lose. I understand there was no
other big man on the board, so you got to
hope that somehow they can finago unless they win a
(38:34):
championship this year. But if you can add this kind
of depth, you know, to a Ruie and Austin reason
the guys that they have, he had a bridge. It's
a hard rotteney how.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
You might get a fifty win team because we always
know how to league fluctuates right, like Phoenix is done right.
They've moved on from the rank. They put some young
pieces around Booker through the draft for free agency, but.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
That's not a team.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
I think that's that's even ready to be middle of
the row. We still don't know what the Golden State
Warrior would be. They still trying to make a move
here and there. You keep hearing about Young it's his
name thrown up there. But if you do look back
to your original question, it would that be enough for
the Nickobakas to do something in the East? It should, right,
that's the correct answer, now will it be? Because at
the end of the day, Lebron is still forty gonna
be forty one, okay. Carl Anthony Towns to me, I
(39:15):
don't like him as much as most people do because
I don't like what seven footers can bang inside. But
they decide to shoot more threes then banging inside the
next again, more high efficient field goals, getting fouled more times,
going to the free throw more, which means you could
probably add four to five more points to your PPG
every single year if you play that way. But he
chooses to shoot the three more then banging the post,
so he's kind of not my guy. But what you
(39:37):
do give up at heart is the heart and soul
of your team, and that counts for a lot. And
do you want to bring on the show and just
the weight that comes with Lebron to the eight and
thing really quick?
Speaker 2 (39:50):
If you do have a coach that knows how to
coach him?
Speaker 3 (39:53):
New York, do you have a coach that Lebron just
knows he can flat out completely one hund control. That's
what it feels like to me. It's not Mike Brown
can handle Lebron. Is Mike Brown just knows how to
wither to Lebron and let Lebron do him.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
That's what it was before.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
I don't think that's good change now, but it works
to get him there because Lebron wants to be somewhere
where I got control.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
Why are we dismissing Cleveland because sixty three win? When
we all stars on this team with Mitchell, Garland and Mobiley,
you got DeAndre Hunter, Jared. I mean, this is not
a championship player. They look at this team as the
OKC of.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
The They're not Donovan. Mitchell's a good player, he's just
not a championship player. And he's their best guy. So
your best guy's not a championship player.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
That's a problem. This Nucleus is going to be around
for a couple more years. They're gonna have a couple
of chances here with this team to see if they
can get over the hump. We'll see if that works
down the road. Hey, Danny Green is gonna be joining
us in the next hour, three time NBA champion. This
is Fox Sports Wellio, rolling along here on another busy
sports Sunday. This is Fox Sports Sunday, and once again
(40:59):
we are in the Fox Sports Radio studios. A three
time NBA champion, National champion in North Carolina, Danny Green
is going to be joining us, coming up here in
about sixteen minutes. Checking in with him. Also, John Paul
Morosi will be joining us on the one o'clock hour,
and then of course later on in this hour, we're
gonna have the perfect picks. Last week, a stunned VJ.
(41:24):
Husky found out that what he had thought was a
narrow lead over yours truly was in deficit. Did you
there's a theme for this week?
Speaker 4 (41:35):
Well?
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Then he asked for a full explanation. Chris, I showed
him the sheet. We showed him the spreadsheet. It's all good.
I would listen.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
I'm not tripping, like I said Colby in the fourth quarter, man,
I like comeback, so give me the bar. Plenty of time,
we got plenty of take. I'm not worried about it
when football startsn't clean up.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Speaking of football, because we're gonna have some basketball talk
coming up here. But speaking of football, we have the
Hall of Fame game now in our sights. Wait we
are now, if I'm doing the math right, twenty five
days away? Yep, twenty five days away. As we get
some And by the way, did you watch the original
(42:14):
Quarterback series?
Speaker 3 (42:15):
Because they got it coming back right now of course,
Quarterback and Receiver. I watched those episodes over and over again.
I like getting into the mind man. When I when
I cover games, my questions to the athletes are always
I want to get like I don't ask how in
the third quarter on that play where you called like,
there's so many people just gonna ask that question. I always, hey,
can you take us through the mentality the thought process.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
Of boom boom boom boom boom, boom boom.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
That's how I impose my questions because I think that's
what fans want.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
What were you thinking?
Speaker 3 (42:42):
Not what you did. I saw what you did. What's
the mindset? And I think that's that's how I ask
my question. So I watched that stuff over and over again.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
I know people get annoyed when I mentioned my rad
of years. But the thing about the thing about working
for the Raiders and working for a team, which was
really my goal coming out of college. You know, I
went to UCLA, had been sports editor of the Daily Bruin.
I had two options. Newspaper work, which is very prevalent
still in that time, which most of my contemporaries did.
(43:11):
But I wanted to work public relations for a professional
sports team, you know, because I could write and that
was sort of my background. And I interview with the Dodgers,
I interviewed with the Angels, I interview with the Rams.
The Rams almost hired me, like it was sort of like,
we're about to hire you, and then there was a
twist in the organization that fell through, and then I
ended up being hired by a team that had just
(43:32):
come to LA, the Raiders coming off a Super Bowl win.
I hated the Raiders as a kid. I mean, I
was like, you know, but the thing about working for
a team, and I had four and a half years
working for the Raiders, is that opportunity to see players
just as people. Yes, okay, so you're watching the whole
process week after week during the season, during the offseason,
(43:53):
and you just get to know the guys, obviously in
a personal level. Most of these guys are still friends
of mine all these years.
Speaker 4 (44:00):
You know.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
I remember I was at a front you know, Marcus
All and I became very close and we were at
some event this maybe I don't know, five years ago,
six years ago together and Doctor j was at this event.
Marcus was there hosting this event, right, and so Marcus
walks up to Doctor Jay, who I had met forty
years before. I knew he went and remember the Marcus
introduced and that he goes, yeah, Steve used to work
(44:22):
with me with the Raiders. That's how he introduced to me.
I'm like thinking, like I work with you and the Raiders.
Let's see, you were the superstar and I was like
that little behind the scenes guy. But it was a
golden opportunity. That's why I love shows like Quarterback because
it really does take you behind the scenes and remind
you that these guys have a life beyond just what
they do on the football field. And you don't think
about that as a fan. You just think about, all right,
(44:45):
I see the guy in the field, and you know
the rest of the noise. So that's something I'm always
grateful for, that opportunity to just get to know these
guys and you know the highs and lows that they
go through during the course of a season during a career.
Speaker 3 (44:59):
My favorite thing was after games. The difference in the
locker rooms after losses and wins is when you can
really get the vibe and really get that I would listen.
I was so blessed to do it this past year
for the Rams and the Chargers, and I didn't miss
a game. I was the last guy. I would just
hang around. Man, I was the last guy leaving. I'm done,
my question everybody, All the networks are gone, all the
(45:20):
camera and all the whole people. Man, I'm standing there,
I'm talking to Justin Herbert, I'm talking to McVeigh. Jim
Harball walked by me one Sunday and he goes, Hey,
how you doing VJ. And you know I feel about
Harball Michigan, Dude, I was like I was. I was
like a little girl meeting Usher as a thirteen year old.
Like Jim Harball like.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
Knows who I like.
Speaker 3 (45:40):
Hold on, Jim Harball from Michigan knows who I am.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
Like that, and you get that vibe.
Speaker 3 (45:46):
But after losses, you know he still talks, but it's
a different hullo. It's a different feeling. You see guys
get out of there quicker. You see, it's just a vibe.
And then going to the practices, you see who gets
there early, you see who leaves late. So when you
see late in the fourth quarter a guy make a
play when you know he's tired as hell, he's played
ninety percent of the snaps on his side of.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
The ball, but still gets there to make that play.
Speaker 3 (46:06):
Until you think about Wednesday, when you were at practice
and when everybody else was gone and the sun was
set and they had to cut the lights on. He
was still running gashers, all right, he was still out there. Yeah,
someone was still doing something. And to see that translate
to a Sunday, just your respect for that person and
just the knowledge you get just goes you know, it
just goes up.
Speaker 2 (46:23):
It goes through the roof, the amount of energy and
work that goes in every single week week prepared to
play for one game. We had a Monday night game
when I worked for the Raiders in Seattle that we
lost thirty seven and nothing. So that's a long flight.
Off said, that's not a good flight home. So we're
on the charter home and mister Davis was walking the aisles.
(46:48):
Now the players are basically in the back the rest
of us, and every time he'd walked by me, I
gnawed off like I was asleep. You know, I just
I just did not want him to stars. You want
to hear quick stories. So we had we had a
game in Kansas City. It was it was where it
was our second game of the eighty five season. We
(47:08):
had opened up at home against the Jets, blow him
out thirty one nothing. Then we have a Thursday game
in Kansas City and we weren't ready and we got
blown out in the second half and from Arrowhead to
the airport, so I kept forty five minute ride. So
one of my jobs was we had usually four buses
that would leave the stadium to go back to the airport,
(47:29):
and my job was to be on the last bus
to make sure we don't accidentally leave anybody behind. Mister
Davis would normally be on the first bus. So as
we're about to unload with the fourth bus and Marcus
Allen and I are literally sitting next to each other
on this last bus, I hear this wait and I
look out here comes mister Davis. I'm like, oh no,
(47:51):
So he was about to leave the owner, so he
had left, he had, I don't know, talking to people.
So the second heg obviously got on this bus after
an ugly loss, dead silence on the bus. So the
only place for him to sit it was like a
side bench in the front of the bus. Was I
was sitting with al Davis on my left and Marcus
(48:12):
Allen on my right, and I'm in the middle. So
we have this ride. It's dead silent right along, and
all of a sudden, mister Davis looks to his right.
I'm like, not even there, Like I don't exist. He's
looking over at Marcus and he says, what the bleep
happened out there? And he didn't say bleep? I know
(48:34):
because he loved the effort right and without his And
I'm just sitting there. Marcus looks over and he goes,
we lost. And I'm thinking, answer, answer, that's bad. He goes,
we lost, and and al did not say another word.
I could literally feel to keep generating off of him. See,
(48:56):
these are the type of things you don't understand.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
But I mean by Marcus out because coach, like, honestly.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
What do you what do you want? What do you
want me to thank you? What do you want me
to say? Marcus? We lost? We lost? Law?
Speaker 3 (49:09):
And See, that's the difference between that era in today's era,
because the fact is this, at the end of the day,
did you win or lose the game? Did you win
or lose the Yet we can all come up with
our own narratives and our own.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Variables as to why.
Speaker 3 (49:24):
But at the end of the day, do you have
an additional number in the win column or do you
have an additional number in the lost column?
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Period? And if you, I guess I was just win, baby,
just win. There are no style points in the NFL,
no at all. It's it's a black and white situation.
You win, you lose, you lose. You win or you lose.
Did you make the kick or miss it? And you
make turn the page immediately? Oh next week? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (49:48):
Oh you. I mean even if you win, Well, here's
the thing. When you win, you actually have.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
To work harder. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (49:52):
Well, I mean again, you're going to get a team
that knows you're coming in off of a win.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
You don't even have time to think about it. You
gotta get ready for the next, next game, next game,
and Bill, Bill Belichick, we're moving on. So, I mean,
it was that that's the kind of behind the scenes
stuff that you get to see, and I wish everyone
had that opportunity if you're a die hard, you know,
and just sort of wonder about these guys. And again
we're talking about this show Quarterback, and it sort of
(50:17):
turns your heels back the curtain a little bit and
you give a little idea. And I thought with the
first series there, you know, with Mahomes and Kirk, Cousins
and Mariota, they had a nice mix a guy's three
different sort of levels of their lives. And their career. Yeah,
so I thought. So this year they have what they
have golf and they have Josh Allen.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
I think Josh Allen is it because he just got married,
so that would be a good one to have there.
What quarterback did for me, I still don't like Him'm
not a fan. He's great, but I don't like him.
I'm not a fan just as what it is. It
made me respect Pat Mahomes a whole lot more than
you red Man. He works so damn hard and I
will never allow anyone in my presence to see him
(50:59):
make one of those magical plays and go, oh, that's luck. Oh,
actually it's not, because he actually trains. Where he stands
on the bowlsoe ball and he holds a broomstick in
one hand and leans to the left and repeatedly throws
a football like no, no. He does this while standing
on the bozo ball, not standing flat footed like he's
all ready to. So that's working core, that's working calf,
(51:20):
that's working, that's working everything. And so when you see him,
so when I see that, I go, yeah, he trains it.
That's not luck, guys. He trains to do that. It's
like shooting a thousand jumpers a day. Kobe braings to
always say I've done this in practice and all my
own so many times that when it comes to the game,
it doesn't matter if you're standing right there. I've done
(51:40):
this move, got to that spot and shot this shot
a thousand times this summer, and I did that all
over the floor, So I shot at ten thousand shots.
You think this one shot on January fourteenth and Toronto
is gonna scare me?
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Dude, I've shot this shot a thousand times over the
last four months. Please, because you work at it. He
why love pass off the fact that again he's training
for what he needs to do on the football field.
He's not training to flex in mirror. No, No, that's
not what he's talking about. What do I need to
work on so I can get that extra step or
extra move, make us throw at a certain angle that
(52:14):
could be the difference between winning and losing the game.
Speaker 3 (52:16):
Functional training is what we call it in personal training
business sacimon functions training.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
All right, coming up on the other side, we'll switch gears.
Get back to all this NBA news. Who better to
break it down than the man that played the game
at the highest level. A three time NBA champion with
three different franchises, Danny Green will join us. This is
Fox Sports Sunday, Harmon and Husky. I hope you're enjoying
her Fourth of July a weekend. Once again. We're having
(52:44):
a great time out here in the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
Yes, sir, Yes, sirs always and we got a special
guest right now, man On Harmon and Husky. This gentleman
is one of my favorite tar heels of all time.
He is a three time NBHA being for three different franchise.
He's also in All Defensive Player two back in twenty sixteen,
twenty seventeen. We crossed pass covering the Lakers this past
(53:08):
year at Crypto and you know, it's just it's a
joy to bring on former NBA champion, My man, mister
Danny Green.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
What's going on, Danny?
Speaker 4 (53:19):
Not much, man Hew, you guys doing now?
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Thank you for making time for us, myself and then
our co host Steve Hartman here man.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
So let's let's get right to it, Danny Green.
Speaker 3 (53:27):
Right now, we're sitting in the free agency pull right now,
coming off for fourth of July weekend. A lot of
moves be made. First question, I'll throw to you, what
move do you think impacts the league the fastest that's
been made so far in the free agency this year.
Speaker 4 (53:42):
I mean, you see the seventeen trade, first of history
to get Kevin Durant to Houston. So I think he'll
impact the league pretty you know, quickly, or impact Houston
pretty quickly. But I like what a lot of teams
have done, like what Atlanta has done. I like what
the Troy has done, And the Ani made a couple
small moveses recently they lost some Miles Turner. I like
(54:06):
what Denver did if they can keep valence units to
stay over here. But yeah, man, there was some really
good moveses off season by those teams, mainly Detroit and Atlanta.
Dallas got the number one pick, but the tray Atlanta
made some really good moves outside of Houston, all.
Speaker 2 (54:21):
Right, Danny, Steve Harvin here. First of all, I was
there when you win your national championship at the Ford
Field in two thousand and nine. I was there for
Fox Sports Radio, side by side Sean Farnan and I
were sitting courtside for your demolition of Michigan State that day.
By the way, I saw magic outside the Arena. He
was very disappointed at his spartan. Could I ask you
(54:44):
quick question again, You're a three time NBA champion. Compare
winning a national championship at North Carolina as opposed to
winning an NBA championship. Give us a comparison, because not
everyone has that opportunity to win both a national Championionship
and an NBA championshipped. How are they the same? How
are they different?
Speaker 4 (55:05):
They're very different. But you know, I don't want to
discredit either one of them. Both of them are very
extremely hard to do. I think you need a little
more luck on your side when it comes to winning
a national championship than it is the NBA Championship. But
I think the NBA Championship it's harder to do, mainly
because it's one game elimination. You know, you got to
(55:26):
be healthy through the whole month of March. Same with
the playoffs. You have to be healthy. But usually the
cream of the crop, you know, the cream rides to
the top when it comes to the playoffs. The better
teams usually win a lot of times in NCAA tournament,
that's not the case. You have one bad night on
a Sunday or Thursday or a Saturday, and you can
lose to a you know, a sixteen seed. So it's
(55:48):
a little bit harder to do. But hard describing the words,
hard to put it into perspective, and harder to say
which one is you know that much better than the other.
So I think it's just you need a little more
luck when it comes in tournament, and I think and
the playoffs in the NBA, I think it's a little
bit tougher, uh to do to be the team four
times and do that for rounds.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
Daddy, you're a guy that stayed relatively healthy when you
were at Carolina and then you know me man connected
with my netfw knd of Marshall. Thank you very much
as always for the old nine National championship.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
Brother, you will always be always being my heart and
so man.
Speaker 3 (56:25):
But there there's an epidemic going on the NBA with
these torn achilles, eight of them this year alone. Being
a former player, being a guy that you know, like
I said, you're relatively state and healthy, they want to
shorting games. You're hearing a lot of people, Draymond Green,
Lebron You're in people saying a lot of stuff right
now just from your opinion, though, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (56:42):
Is it a lack of training, Danny.
Speaker 3 (56:43):
Is it a lack of practice because you you removed
from the game now dude, dude, the guy's not practice
enough and now you're trying to put your body out here.
Just your opinion. What do you think is the problem
and do you think it can be fixed? As far
as this achilles epidemic going on.
Speaker 4 (56:56):
One hundred percent could be fixed. Obviously now people more
aware of it, so I think trainers are more aware
of focusing on those parts of the bodies right, making
sure the cavs achilles is strengthen, making sure you're lifting.
And I think more superstars are more aware of it
as well, like all right, you know, I probably need
to make sure I stay on top of this. A
more player, not a superstars, but more players. But it
could be a combination of both, man like it might be.
(57:19):
You know, people are saying the shoes, some people are
saying it's not I don't think it's the shoes and
low tops. I think it's a lack of it could
be conditioning or too much conditioning. But I think your
body is conditioned to what you put it through and
what you're used to, and I think that's probably maybe
could be lack of practice. You know, the guys back
in the day did more up and down in practice,
so it could have helped in that aspect, but who knows.
(57:42):
More importantly, I think it's just the right recovery and
the right of strength and condition and off season and
during the season, and maybe some guys aren't on tubes.
Everybody's body is different, right, so you just never know.
But as of right now, I think it's it's another
thing that people is brought to the forefront and everybody's
aware of it, and I think it's will get better.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
Danny, I have to ask you because this is something
not only I'm curious about, but my younger son, who
is a diehard Laker fan, wants to know the answer
because in twenty twenty, you guys win the championship. You
and KCP were the starting backcourt for that entire run
in the postseason, and then it just seemed like they
were hell bent on dismantling that team after winning a championships.
Speaker 4 (58:25):
Yeah, I hear you, And.
Speaker 2 (58:26):
So my question is why were the Lakers so anxious
to break up a team that had just won a championship,
and if you had held that team together, is it
conceivable that the Lakers would be in a much better
situation right now?
Speaker 4 (58:45):
I don't know about right now because I was five
years ago. I think the team still would be different
from that point to right now. I don't know if
they were hell bent on it, but I think we know.
For me from when I was moved, I understood the situation.
You know, they were trying to get somebody to bront him.
That brought her and Schroeder which said it made sense,
So I got it. I understand the business out of it.
(59:06):
I think they felt like we needed some changes because
some of the things weren't working or some things weren't
going smoothly. Do I think we could have gotten back? Yes,
I think we definite wud have gotten back to the finals.
If we just stayed together for another year or two,
two more years, I think we would have got back
and probably at least one one more maybe, But it
all depended on if Adca healthy. You know, I think
they were really good teams still with a D. Then
(59:28):
he's got hurt the next year against Phoenix, But who's
to say he wouldn't be healthy? If you have Jabelle McGee,
Dwight Howard there where he doesn't have to play the
five as much, right, so, you know, who knows. There's
a lot of what if, It's a lot of this
or that. But yeah, I think we were a good team.
I think we could have they could have at least
won one more and got to the finals at least
one other time. So but yeah, I don't know if
(59:52):
they were hell bent on it, and I don't know
if they'd be better off today. But I do think
some trades and I think everybody can agree that that
didn't make sense, it didn't work out, and that happens
in every organization.
Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
Right Fox Sports Sunday Hartman and Husky.
Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
Right now we have one three time former NBA champion,
North Carolina Tario champion also to Danny Green.
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
Danny Enough layups Man. We like to cause little trouble
here on the radio.
Speaker 3 (01:00:14):
Sometimes some of the questions ask no, but seriously, man,
just to simply put Opening Night, October twenty twenty five,
Lebron James is wearing a Laker uniform or he is
wearing one of the other thirty one team uniforms.
Speaker 4 (01:00:29):
He's wearing a Lake uniform. He ain't going nowhere man.
Him and BROWNI are. They're very comfortable and you know,
in the organization, and he's making fifty three million. I
don't see them waving that or buying that out and
do that. Just sounds crazy for Lebron James to be
waved about out the whole sentence.
Speaker 2 (01:00:47):
What about trade? What about traded Danny?
Speaker 4 (01:00:50):
I don't see that happening either. This is hard for
a team to trade.
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
For hold on, hold on, hold on, Danny, Danny, Danny.
J and I already have the trade. We already got
the trade that we want to run this by you.
So we were curious. We were curious why the Knicks
would hire Mike Brown except for the fact that Mike
Brown used to be Lebron's coach, and then we have
a deal wouldn't involve it's actually a salary for salary trade.
(01:01:14):
You trade Lebron to the Knicks for Josh Hart, the
Cal Bridges who has an expiring deal, Mitchell Robinson has
an expiring deal. Deal done. The Lakers get Bridges Heart,
who they really want. We know they want Josh Hart
and Robinson, and Lebron goes and he joins Towns and Annobe.
Obviously Brunson there in New York. The East is wide open.
(01:01:35):
He wants to win a championship.
Speaker 4 (01:01:37):
The mckel bridge extension.
Speaker 2 (01:01:40):
No, no, he's got an expiring contract. Man, he's going
to be a free agent.
Speaker 4 (01:01:44):
A three year extension.
Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
We missed that. Do we miss that? Danny?
Speaker 4 (01:01:48):
Either way, if you're the Knicks, why would you Why would.
Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
You do that? Because you're the Knicks because by the way, uh.
Speaker 4 (01:01:59):
The Lebron is great, but the window is even shorter now,
you know, like you It's the reason why I said
it's hard to make a trade for him, not that
he's not worth it, it's just it's a high risk
for a short period of time. You have to win
a championship in the next two.
Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
Year or two No, one year, one year. That's a
whole what's the thing, Danny? Get The Knicks had a
wonner championship since Richard Nixon was president. Okay, so if
you were to tell Knicks fans, look, we're going to
bring in for Lebron for one year. You know, the
Celtics are down, the Pacers are down with the injuriesbelievable,
Milwaukee's up in the air. We don't know the honest situation.
Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
Sure you won you think you don't know if this
is about it's going to hold up for the whole year.
So that's a lot of risks to put it in
all your eggs into one year at Lebron at forty
one years old. And I think he's very good, but
you're losing a lot of your young cores, a lot
of your depths which you barely even had to begin with.
So you're giving up Michael Bridges, Josh Hart and then
who else?
Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
Robinson Robinson just a salary, a throwing though, just be
throwing though.
Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
But I think the Lakers would want one that's a
backup big man to go with Jackson Hayes and to
go DeAndre.
Speaker 4 (01:03:04):
Yeah, they want Mitchell Robinson to go with Luke of course.
So that's a lot of pieces to give up to
get to the Lakers. If I'm the Lakers, yeah, I'll
probably take that. But if I'm the next it's like,
all right, we got one player, got red of three.
We were already lacking depths, So you're gonna fire Mike
Brown for the same thing he did with Tids and
playing only six man rotation. I don't know, man, that's
a that's a tough tough self for me. If I'm
(01:03:25):
the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
Hey, it's a trade, uh, my partner and I came
up with here because I just think I'm a conspiracy guy.
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
Sometimes, Man, you hire Mike Brown, Okay, his name was.
Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
Not even being mentioned, and you had other guys out there, Bunahozer,
Mike Malone and Vogel who have all won championships, who've
all handled this era of players as head coaches, done
well and have handled superstars.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
But you hire Mike Brown. He had to be well
for thirteenth on the list from all the names we heard,
and then you start to hear John Staley was ahead
of him, right, Don Staley's name popped up before Mike Brown.
Speaker 4 (01:04:04):
But that they didn't have many options. Everybody was not
the people they wanted is not available. That's why you
don't fire a coach unless you have something.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
Already in the back exactly good or better.
Speaker 4 (01:04:14):
They didn't have that, so they fired TIBs and they
were looking for back and plant see if other guys
let go. But it didn't happen. So ultimately and it
sucks for Mikey, but they end up settling, which I
think is a good settlement because Mike, I think it's
a great coach. But I don't think that's the reason
why you got them to get Lebron. I don't think
that helps any And are you guys Knicks fans, because
I just don't.
Speaker 2 (01:04:34):
Know what We're trying to put the pieces together, Danny else,
something doesn't smell right, so we're trying to figure out.
We're just trying to start so man, because they don't
smell right, Danny, you and I.
Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
You and I have talked, bro, like I feel you
I could see other places. But the nixt I don't know,
said to give up all those seasons, get Bron and
Browny James. Yeah, people want to watch and sell tickets
and everything like that. But forty one, we don't know
if he's gonna be healthy the whole season, which I mean,
he's proven everybody around every year, and it's a lot
a lot of eggs in one basket for one year
because if you don't win this year, you're done for
(01:05:09):
the next and so you can rebuild again, which who
knows how long that's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (01:05:14):
Yeah, yeah, great point man, great robuta we'll get back
at it, Danny Green. I listen, brother, you know I
got love for you, man, God, but I appreciate you
so much. Sate all the convo at the Laker guns Man,
thanks for coming on Hartman and Husk on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (01:05:25):
We're great appreciate you guys. Man.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Let's take it easy, all right, Danny, great stuff, love it,
love it, love it. Well, you know, I think we
got right. We're trying to convince everybody on this run here.
But again, I get back to this. If you're a
next fan and you're saying, all right, we only get
it for one year, all right, it's going to be
enough to at least get us to the NBA finals
(01:05:48):
that year, and of course they would take that and
fifty years since they won, plus Lee would go crazy.
All right, let's find out what is trending right now?
Are you buying into what we're selling. No, she's never done,
not at all.
Speaker 7 (01:06:05):
Lebron cannot go to another team. He cannot possibly go.
Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
He's going though to the cat. I'm calling it right now.
They're gonna trade him. He will not when they suit
up for twenty twenty five open a night would not
be I don't got that.
Speaker 7 (01:06:21):
Oh, No, he'll start because of Bronny. He's not. He
may be traded throughout the season, but he'll start the
season as a Laker. He cannot go to the next him.
Speaker 2 (01:06:28):
Being traded during the season would be even worse.
Speaker 3 (01:06:31):
It's being traded now.
Speaker 7 (01:06:34):
He would decide that, Like, he's not he's not leaving
right now. Why would he leave the Lakers?
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
First of all, when she says Cleveland, Cleveland does have
more pieces to move and you talk about an all
star backcourt, the young big guy Lebron comes home, right,
that's the chan the king champion comes home.
Speaker 4 (01:06:51):
I got it.
Speaker 8 (01:06:52):
He can't possibly go to another team water down your
career more, my guy.
Speaker 2 (01:06:57):
You know what, he can't go to another team but
the Cats.
Speaker 7 (01:07:01):
Oh, yes, that's what. That's right. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
Like from a standpoint, it's New yr York. Can you
imagine if you won a championship in one year in
New York but he's not.
Speaker 7 (01:07:12):
I don't think that's what New York is missing Lebron
James to win. I don't think that's what the missing.
What are they what are they going to give up to.
Speaker 5 (01:07:21):
Bridges and.
Speaker 7 (01:07:25):
Then you lose some of your best defenders.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
But you still have your big three that you currently
have plus Lebron.
Speaker 7 (01:07:31):
Yeah, but who's defending.
Speaker 8 (01:07:32):
Who's defending at the end in the seven game series,
Your your legs are exhausted, which is what we saw
with the Knicks.
Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
Which is how Sims coaches, which is Brown's not going
to coach that way. I don't know. I know, he's
supposedly a defensive coach, right right, he's a defensive guy.
Speaker 8 (01:07:47):
I just think if Lebron went to another team and
then there is no success, you're you're literally like, we're
gonna remember the end of his career and it's not great,
you know, going to Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Right now, there's nobody left from when he was in Cleveland.
Probably it's like a new team anyway.
Speaker 7 (01:08:08):
It's just like him leaving the Lakers admits that he
that this was a failure. The minute he leaves the Lakers,
you admit this experiment was a failure.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
But he also like, look, he's a very smart guy.
Do I have a better chance going with this Laker
team to the NBA Finals or going to Cleveland or
New York in the East and getting to the NBA Finals?
Speaker 7 (01:08:27):
Of course, But why did he leave the East in
the first place because.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
He wanted to come and he wanted to come to
La wanted to come to l A and e raise Kobe.
So you can get into the God conversation with Jordan.
I always said that from day one, because you could
have came to Sound with the Clippers and actually think
about it. But I'm just saying, just think about it hypothetically,
say he didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
Want to bubble with lebron as the Clippers, right, anybody
had all the other business of that franchise forever.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
Now of course if you went here, guess what's just
another Lakers?
Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
Was just hear what exactly?
Speaker 7 (01:08:55):
I totally agree with that. As from that, what I'm saying,
like the minute he leaves, it admits to failure.
Speaker 8 (01:09:00):
Right, So that's why I don't think he doesn't start
the season as a Laker and then if things don't
go well, then he's gonna.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
Did And that's what I think. That's why that's why
I think that Josh Monsey, she has a whole show
coming up with care Man.
Speaker 7 (01:09:13):
That's all good. It's a good conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
I like talking.
Speaker 7 (01:09:17):
It is a good conversation.
Speaker 5 (01:09:19):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:09:19):
This week Dan and I had a show, and we
did a low Watch twenty twenty five and so watch,
and we even had drop like a political like.
Speaker 7 (01:09:28):
Low Watch twenty twenty five, and we just.
Speaker 8 (01:09:30):
Started like diving into the social media because we don't
know what's gonna happen.
Speaker 7 (01:09:33):
It's just fun.
Speaker 3 (01:09:33):
It's fun.
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
It's fun out there.
Speaker 3 (01:09:35):
They're they're talking about moving them, guys, I'm telling you,
and I'm sure business wise they're talking about move Look.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Well, yeah, I know the Lakers want to move him.
The Lakers absolutely, I agree with you on that totally.
Speaker 8 (01:09:47):
I just don't Lebron's gonna be like, well the minute
you move me insat to admit that this was a mistake.
Speaker 7 (01:09:50):
Okay.
Speaker 8 (01:09:51):
The Red Sox are up on the Nationals four to two,
top of the seventh inning.
Speaker 7 (01:09:53):
Call Schwarber, with an RBI double, has tied the game for.
Speaker 8 (01:09:56):
The Phillies against the Reds one one bottom of the seventh.
It's been back and forth between the Angels and the
Blue Jays Toronto back on top three to two, bottom
of the sixth inning. The Brewers have a three to
one lead over the Marlins in Miami. It is the
top of the ninth inning and all rise because Aaron
Judge has hit his thirty third homer of the season.
Speaker 7 (01:10:13):
Yankees trying to avoid a three game sweep by the Mets.
Speaker 8 (01:10:16):
Right now they are up five to two bottom of
the sixth inning. Mets to have a man on first
and second and they have all their outs for this one.
The Raiser edging the Twins two to one bottom of
the fifth Rockies on the scoreboard first against the White
Sox one zero, bottom of the second inning, and the
Orioles did complete a three game sweep of the Braids
two to one. At Wimbledon, Carlos Algaz in his fourth
round match, he lost his first set in a tiebreak,
(01:10:38):
but won the next two sets and right now he
is up four sets to two, while fellow American and
five seed tailor Fritz not fellow American are fellow American
five seed tailor Fritz is headed to the quarterfinals.
Speaker 7 (01:10:49):
And in NFL news, Dallas Cowboys wide.
Speaker 8 (01:10:51):
Receiver Cavante Turpin was arrested this morning for a weapon
and marijuana charges.
Speaker 2 (01:10:56):
Back to you guys, all right, Monsey, thank you very
much again, Harbin Huski. The Fox Sports radio studios, don't
forget to check out Fox Sports Radios YouTube channel a
ton of great videos from many of our Fox Sports
Radio shows. Just search Fox Sports Radio on YouTube you
can see a whole bunch of video highlights from our shows,
and be sure to subscribe to you always have instant
access to our Fox Sports Radio videos on YouTube. All right,
(01:11:18):
it is that time here we are precise profitables over
under a half a flagrant gentlemen, are your perfet picks?
All right? So we have perfet picks. It's going to
be a two segment. Obviously, we have a short segment.
We'll finish this on the other side. Chris, how are
(01:11:38):
you man ready for perfet picks? Well, I am kind
of ripped up a little bit.
Speaker 9 (01:11:43):
It has been a weird weekend for me, partly from
lack of sleep, partly from some personal stuff. Either way,
though we are on the next perfect picks is my
throat is kind of raspy. We're still waiting for that
to find out. Novak Djokovic, I didn't realize you plays
tomorrow for round four? Does leave only two on the board?
(01:12:04):
You guys split days until the NBA suspends my league
Beasley four and a half, Steve, you win that on
the on the over they still haven't done anything about that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
And VJU take USA Costa Rica.
Speaker 9 (01:12:17):
USA ended up going way over one and a half
goals against Costa Rica. They're in that Gold Cup final
and May it's USA Mexico again. How things change the
more they stay to say, leaving the current count at
fifteen to eleven.
Speaker 2 (01:12:33):
So we will keep catching up on this.
Speaker 9 (01:12:37):
I do find it interesting that I'm seeing some reports
that we might end up seeing shder Sanders starting to
court the CFL, that you know once again that they
might not make it out of Brown's camp just thrown
us back.
Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
To the original CFL. Yeah wow, yeah, is he going
to make it out of camp?
Speaker 9 (01:12:58):
It's a valid question about I think there's just so
much noise around the Cleveland Browns right now you never
know what's.
Speaker 2 (01:13:04):
And they're also trying to get the city to pay
for a new stadium, which is.
Speaker 9 (01:13:09):
Black's weird looks weird. I don't like these new stadiums.
I don't like this entire look anyway, let's get one
off the ground. There is a theme today, there's a
theme today with picks. But we're gonna do the theme
on the other side. What we will do for the
first one and really I feel bad giving this ye
before we go to break. But Fox Sports just put
out their top ten quarterbacks going into the twenty twenty
(01:13:29):
five list after we had been having a conversation as
I saw this stuff. But maaw, who was at number
one right right VJ? Number one over Patrick Mahomes was
Josh Allen. Yes, I don't know how much I want
to agree with that. I think Josh Allen is very
good Bills. Since we're doing our NFL futures, eleven and
(01:13:51):
a half wins is your season total. I feel like
every year we look at the Bills, it's like, oh, yeah,
this is the year they're going to take a step back,
and then surprise, surprise, still good.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
In the rest of the AFC East is still trash.
All right, So right now, since VJ is trailing overall, cheat,
I would like to give you the option. Would you
like me to go first or would you like to
go first on the over runner on Josh ap the Bills?
No matter what it's up to you, man, I'm gonna
go first though. All right, this is the year the
Buffalo Bills are gonna win a Super Bowl? Oh god,
(01:14:22):
so eleven and a half this is gonna be playing
in that woefully weekske Smember, I got Miami with what
six wins this year, so lucky to win. You win Dallas? Yeah,
I did, Dallas doing it all the Bills this year.
Bills will probably win thirteen fourteen games at least this
year playing in that week division. So way over, easily over.
(01:14:44):
Eleven and a half for the Buffalo Bills A tough one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:47):
Eleven and a half, boy, man, that's Vegas really trying
to suck to you into some bets.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
Ten and a half. I don't take the over, but
eleven and a half now I need him to be
twelve and five. AFC is tough, man. It's not about
their division. AFC is just tough. Honestly.
Speaker 3 (01:14:59):
I think Air is going to do a pretty good
job with that just defense. I don't know what their
offense will be, but I know their defense will stop
some people this year.
Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
Saying with the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
People love the Patriots, pecially the guys sitting to my
left here who was raving for the Patriots, but now
they're try So he's got the Dolphins for four or
five wins, all right, you know, give me, give me
buff Buffalo is still bufflong. I'm gonna try to do
reverse psychology with myself right here, so I'll take the over.
I won't I won't explain the reverse psychology, but I'm
playing with my own brain.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
Here, give me the over. Finally, curse the theme begins,
the Curse of the Cat Kings. Oh okay, that's a
little tease for you. Coming up with more perfet picks
here on Fox Sports Sunday, Harbor and Husky Here Fox
Sports Sunday. We continue on with the Perfet the precise,
profitable over under a half a flagrant. Are your perfect picks?
Speaker 5 (01:15:54):
Right?
Speaker 9 (01:15:54):
As I said, We've got a themes, the restless one
which is Curse of the Cat People. Taking from Tom Selleck,
who on was I always remember an interview with him
when he was being tapped for Blue Bloods. They wanted
to wear a Yankees had kind of like you know,
Magnum key I with a Tiger's cap and he had
a Detroit Tiger's logo sewn in the back because he
wanted to avoid the Curse of the Cap people. We
had a similar situation Cleveland this week where JK. Simmons
(01:16:18):
throughout the first pitch. On June twenty six. He was
wearing a Cleveland Guardians jersey, but someone caught a picture
of it and underneath it was a Detroit Tigers shirt.
Speaker 2 (01:16:28):
Wosh JK.
Speaker 9 (01:16:29):
Simmons is a Detroit fan. Since that time, the Guardians
have not won a single game. Oh and eight, I believe,
although right now they're up one nothing on said Tigers.
So we'll start there before going over to the other
person who has disrespected both Cleveland and Detroit this week.
So just make this quick on the Guardians over under
(01:16:50):
wins before next week three and a half. They have
seven games before we come back and get close to
the All Star break.
Speaker 2 (01:16:57):
I gotta take a look at their schedule. I just
had it up. I should have kept it up.
Speaker 5 (01:17:03):
That is.
Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
That's okay right now? The Tigers too long, second and third,
So all right, so we're including today's game.
Speaker 9 (01:17:10):
You have this one game of Detroit three against Houston,
four against the White Sox.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
Yeah, all right, over three four and three against Houston four,
all on the road.
Speaker 9 (01:17:19):
And yeah, so that that fourth one against the White
Sox one counts. This is during our time on air.
But yeah, so three is Chicago three Houston, this game
in Detroit.
Speaker 2 (01:17:27):
I'm counting three and a half wins. I probably set
this too high you.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
Did, but I'll take the over because I think they'll
hold on basis loaded bottom of the eighth. So I'm
liking what I'm saying here at two outs until somebody
hits a grounder, is right.
Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
You know that is a tough number. I mean, obviously,
Houston White Sox.
Speaker 4 (01:17:51):
Are not.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
I'm gonna you're going on, I'll take the under here.
I'll take the under here. So there there, they're on
a those die. We hope I can get today's game,
so I'll go over. All right. So we've got a
bit of a kerfuffle happening in the w n B.
Speaker 9 (01:18:09):
A Caitlin Clark's been out of the Fever lineup, but
a bigger story in that the w NBA recently announced
they're going to be going to Detroit and Cleveland, and
Sophie Cunningham of the Indian and Indiana Fever got herself
in a little bit of hot water, saying her words
were taken of context. I don't feel so uh, just
kind of saying no, you know, I'm not sure she
(01:18:31):
really wants to go to Detroit or Cleveland. She would
rather go to Nashville or Kansas City, which very interesting
choices there. So this is gonna be a bit of
a cross promote sport promotion. I know it's up in
the air. I know it's malleable. Tigers also play on
seven on July ninth against Tampa, while the Fever play
the Valkyries on July ninth. So Sophie Cunningham over under
(01:18:56):
on points. The over under is the combined run from
Detroit and Tampa. Last three games for Sophie Cunningham was
two points, four points thirteen.
Speaker 3 (01:19:10):
Over under also two In her comments, they weren't taken
out of context. She could she could kill with that.
She actually sounded like she was crying and complaining. And
she also mentioned about the market. No, it was it
was all about like, we know what you want.
Speaker 2 (01:19:23):
Now now you're putting other teams in our market, is
what she said.
Speaker 9 (01:19:27):
Also too, it is the combined runs of the July
ninth Detroit and Tampa baseball game over under.
Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
What's the number that's that's whatever they score. Oh, she
has been extremely hot cold, so that's why I like that.
So over under they have more point more runs than
she scores. Yes, both teams runs Oh that's a good one, man.
Speaker 2 (01:19:56):
See, you don't take a stab with that one. I'll
be honest with you. I I have no idea what
we're talking about right now. I mean, I am completely
clueless of just about everything Chris has been saying for
the last two minutes. I don't even know what we're
talking about here. I know you got those you got
too many, too many of those cupcakes here. I mean
I was like, what, what where are we here? This
(01:20:18):
was a little a little bit what we normally have.
One more NFL future. Why don't you think about it?
Because okay, I need to. I need to sit down
with you and really understand what it is.
Speaker 9 (01:20:29):
Let's talk this over in the rate they got about
twenty seconds hard, I have an NFL future on the
other side.
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
Okay, get this all right, we'll do that. Okay, I
got to figure that out, and job Baul BARROSI will
join it as well. It sounds intriguing, Chris, it really does.
But I want to make sure I know what you're
talking about before I make the prediction. This is Fox
Sports Sunday, I enjoying the wrap up of our fourth
(01:20:53):
of July weekend with our edition here of this Fox
Sports Sunday. Once again, we're in the Fox Sports right studios.
John Balmossi is going to be joining us coming up
here in about twenty minutes. Big day in baseball. We're
going to get a lot covered there. But first we
got to continue on with the Perfet picks. And during
the break I was finally given a breakdown of what
(01:21:16):
we were talking about before the updated and now I
understand you, well, now I understand, so now I can
make an educated guess. So again we'll talking about Sophie
Cunningham of the Indiana Fever, and she made these controversial
comments about expansion the WNBA to, among other places, the
city of Detroit. And her argument was, why would you
(01:21:39):
expand in a city that no one wants to play it?
Why aren't you expanding to places like Miami and far
more attractive cities.
Speaker 9 (01:21:46):
And obviously that doesn't mean it well in the c
q WAA. You should be trying to find places. We're
going these fans to show up there. And I mean, again,
rich coming from Sophie Cunningham, who, if it wasn't for
the presence of Kaitlyn Clark, would be playing for an
audience of Cornstalks.
Speaker 3 (01:22:01):
Yeah, and also when you talk about cities in Miami,
there's a lot to do.
Speaker 2 (01:22:09):
Yep, there's a lot to do.
Speaker 3 (01:22:11):
People are not going to spend their money and waste
their time going to a upstart, probably bad w NBA
franchise game, especially this time of year where it's hot
and it's sunny in the beaches, in the nightclubs, and
there's a.
Speaker 2 (01:22:28):
Lot to do this tom of year in Miami. I
thought it was smart not to put a w NBA
team there just yet. Maybe in the future. But yeah,
and I'm sorry Nashville listened to sports and then we
throw this up against a Tigers raised game.
Speaker 9 (01:22:40):
Yeah, I just figured, rather than doing the line based
on her you know, average points or something, who's going
to have more, who's gonna have the higher number Sophie
Cunningham points on the ninth or Tiger's raised combined.
Speaker 2 (01:22:51):
Guys on the ninth. Got it? Got it? Got it?
I'm ready, You're ready for me? Took Okay, So I
looked a little bit more of Sophie Cunningham, and you know,
she's she's not much of a score at all. So
I'm definitely gonna say she's going to be the under,
So I'm going under. Yeah, she's averaging five points a
game if they can buy two. But yeah, but that
(01:23:14):
game could be six to five, you know that can
it could be although the way the Tigers are hitting
right well, they just tied up this game against the Guardians.
Speaker 1 (01:23:21):
By the way, there.
Speaker 9 (01:23:24):
Three of their position players all stars, all Stars starters,
so you know.
Speaker 2 (01:23:29):
Yeah, by the way, you see what Scooball did today
school ball?
Speaker 4 (01:23:33):
What do you do?
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
Scooball? He uh seven and he's three hits, no runs,
eleven striker, ten striker. Yeah, this is a team I
have dreamed for for at least ten years, is h
He is ridiculous? At this point, they got a legitimate
shot to win the questions. I was what they had pitching.
Speaker 3 (01:23:49):
I grew up watching like Golden Age Verlander, and Scooball
is like up there with that. Anyway, since I said
this was a theme, we might as well go ahead
and cross one more Detroit thing off our list until
so I can get all this Detroit out of my system.
Speaker 9 (01:24:03):
My Detroit Lions. Their win record for the season is
being set up at ten and a half. We were
remarking a little bit that it feels low, but we
must remember A, it's probably not likely they'll win fifteen
games again. Unfortunately. B they lost both their coordinators and
their starting center Frank rag now retired. And I know
that might not seem like much, but this is a
team who's O line is the heart and soul of
(01:24:26):
that team. I think a lot of people expect the
Lions to kind of regress a little bit. Other teams
the NFC North constantly looking sexy. Be it the Minnesota Vikings,
Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears, everyone's gassing up the Green
Bay Packers. So ten and a half wins for the
Detroit Lions, are we going over or under for the season, gentlemen,
(01:24:46):
over still a.
Speaker 3 (01:24:48):
Very good football team. I know they lost their coordinators.
Coordinators are important, but they don't play, and their toughness
is what's going to carry them because they are tough
football team, because the head guy is still there who's tough,
and even the coordinators, they are still coaches there that.
Speaker 2 (01:25:02):
Were coaching under those coordinators.
Speaker 9 (01:25:04):
So you buy into Dan Campbell being this firepower because
I know some people who think, like, without Ben Johnson,
Dan Campbell is nothing.
Speaker 3 (01:25:11):
Well, guess what those people are just talking off of
hypotheticals of what might be. I'm just going to go
by the facts of what I've seen and what I've
seen Dan Campbeill be able to do is take a
franchise to heights that we have and not in my
lifetime that I've ever seen this team that's good in
my lifetime, So I'll.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
Stick with that.
Speaker 3 (01:25:27):
They still have a top ten quarterback, they still have
a top ten receiver, they still have a top ten
running back, they still have a top five defense, they
still have a top ten pass rusher.
Speaker 2 (01:25:36):
They got The line is still take studs like this
one of the best out there. Yeah, absolutely, they got studs.
Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
But they so dude, stop, they got studs on this
football team, all right, guys got the Bears.
Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
I'm sorry, honestly the Bears.
Speaker 3 (01:25:50):
I understand what you're saying about the division, but I
was one that said three teams are going to make
the playoffs from this division, which.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
They did before last year started our preview show. But
the Bears, give me a break. Okay, They're not giving
away money here. When you're setting a line that looks
obviously low, something is up. I'm taking the under. Sorry,
Chris nothing personal. Why you take the underdog well because
I think Jared Goff is a ticking time bomb. Really yeah,
(01:26:19):
I think that. I don't want to wish any ill
will on anybody. I love the Jared Goff story and
what he's done with the Detroit Lions, but something tells
me that this season is not going to go well
for Jared Goff, whether he's underperforming or gets injured, something
is going to be up with that quarterback position. So
(01:26:39):
I'm going to go under for the Lions ten and
a half. I actually I actually agree with Steve, but
not on the account of Jared Goff.
Speaker 3 (01:26:46):
Right, And that's what I was gonna say. It would
have to be indury. He has too many weapons not
to play well. You don't have that many weapons. You've
never seen a team that has an MVP candidate, which
he was last year map sidele quarterback with that many
type of weapons not play well. Naming the quarterback in
the history and in the last twenty five years that
(01:27:08):
had that type of weaponry around him and was an
MVP candidate and just for some reason couldn't get it done.
Speaker 9 (01:27:14):
That Fox Sports radio list we were talking about earlier
also had Jared Goff very high, yet I saw no
Number six when.
Speaker 2 (01:27:20):
I saw him tweet it.
Speaker 3 (01:27:21):
The first thing I thought about was the top ten
conversation we had, and I actually saved it to my
phone and then I retweeted it just in case I
wanted to go back to it. Because there's a certain
gentleman's name that's in that top ten and another certain
gentleman's name that's not in that top ten that they
put out there. We almost hit it dead on Dak's there.
Jayden Daniels is hired, and I thought he that I
think I would have him.
Speaker 9 (01:27:41):
I just wouldn't put a rookie quarterback going into his
sophomore season in his past CJ Strops.
Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
Absolutely. I will say this about the Lions though they
have the one player that I'm most interested in. You know,
every year he have Like, okay, I saw what he
did as a rookie, like Jayden Daniels, right, like, what
does he do next? Can I guess what Jamier exactly exactly?
When I watched your Gibbs, I'm like, okay, I mean
you make an argument. You know, obviously the usual suspect
(01:28:08):
Sakwon Barkley and Derrick Henry and everything, but when it
comes to just running the football, this is the most
exciting running back in the NFL. Not just running the football,
I mean he can literally every skirmish, skirmish, he won't
have as many rushing yards on the top guys, one
of the very few players. When he gets his hands
on the ball, I paluk out, look out, everybody pays.
(01:28:31):
He can just take off. You can go to the
house every single time. I want to see how much
more they use Gibbs. I'm pretty sure they're gonna put that.
I love him at receiver.
Speaker 3 (01:28:40):
I love when they motion them out and they put
him in the slaughtered the emotion the mount and put
them out wide because you make the defense have to
make a decision. Am I going to put a nickel
corner to follow him? My outside.
Speaker 2 (01:28:49):
Show on Turf with Marshall falk remember his first year
in Saint Louis, he had over a thousand yards both
washing and receiving. Because again Mike Mart's new look. If
I if, if I put him as a receiver, no
one's gonna stay with this guy.
Speaker 3 (01:29:03):
He was at that at that time, Marshall Faulk was
the best running back in football.
Speaker 2 (01:29:08):
And then he was a tot wide receiver in football.
Yeah forget and.
Speaker 3 (01:29:12):
Remember the year he goes thousand and thousand was only
second time it was done. Roger Craig did it that
first time, so it was only the second time in
the history of the game that a thousand, thousand four
running back had been done. And Marshall Falk also Peyton
Manning credits Marshall fall growth.
Speaker 5 (01:29:26):
In the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:29:27):
He goes, if I didn't have that guy standing, they said,
Pey man I said, every times he would break the
huddle and Marshall Funck would lean over to him and
tell him what the audible two or tell him what
to look at.
Speaker 2 (01:29:37):
Nobody telling you this. I got to know Marshall fuk
way back in his San Diego State days, but when
he came to the NFL, people will tell you you
talk about a guy who's head is one hundred percent
in the game and literally knows everything, everything that is Marshall,
everything that was Marshall Fulk. He would do things like
I think it was the Rams are playing that first
year and they were trying to run the two minute
(01:29:59):
drill and Kurt Warner made a pass to one of
the receivers might have been Ozley Keenan. He goes down
and he's hurt, and Marshall Falk runs over and grabs
him to lift him up, just to stand there because
we're running the clock. Just stand there because we're gonna
spike the ball. And he smart smart, he's thinking like, okay, dude,
(01:30:20):
we can't. You can't be on the ground, lifts them up,
puts them down, stand there and they won that. And
by the way, they won that game.
Speaker 3 (01:30:26):
That's almost close to Mike Shanahan Super Bowl Broncos Packers
Terrell Davis can't see, can't see. He's going he's got
the concussions, he's got the migraines. And he goes, Coach,
I can't see. He goes, well, it doesn't matter. We're
not giving you the ball, but if we don't put
you in, they'll never think we're gonna run it. He goes,
don't worry, you're not getting the ball. But that's that's
(01:30:49):
a quick thought process from a coach. That's how fast
his brain is working in the most important critical point
in game of your coaching life.
Speaker 2 (01:31:00):
At that moment, your brain is fast enough to.
Speaker 3 (01:31:02):
Say, because most of something I'd say it is less experience,
because it would be like, oh, okay, back up, no
he goes, don't worry, don't worry, no, come here, come back,
come here, doesn't matter, come and not give me the ball.
But if I don't put you in right now, they're
never believe we're going to run the football. Ye, Pete
Carroll's big mistake, National Championship.
Speaker 2 (01:31:16):
Yeah, Reggie Bush on the sideline and fourth and two,
fourth and so then off tackle, off tackle. The whole
stadium knew what was coming. Yeah, And speaking one more,
one more name to keep an eye for the Lions.
This might be the year.
Speaker 9 (01:31:31):
And I know from watching them and you know the
new offensive coordinator system, everything, Jamison Williams, James absolute. We
saw the flashes last year and I feel like that's
a deep.
Speaker 2 (01:31:42):
Threat to life. Said guys ten and a half something
screwy with that line, really screwed.
Speaker 9 (01:31:48):
It's just the public perception at this point. And also
I will say this, like listening to the sports book guys,
the bookmakers that I know, they always have to kind
of like they know Michigan pe bet on their own
teams very hard. So I think they kind of need
those numbers to come.
Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
In for them all right. Coming up on the other side,
we're going to get back into a little baseball right now,
getting close to the All Star break around Major League Baseball,
our insider John Paul Morosi will join us. This is
Fox Sports Sunday, Harvin and Husky here on this Sunday.
We don't have a lot of Sundays left till we
(01:32:27):
get to the NFL season, which we are absolutely looking
forward to once again in the Fox Sports Radio studios. Now,
let's talk some baseball because this is this is a
time to highlight Major League Baseball and our Fox Sports
Radio MLB analyst, the legendary the great John Paul Morosi,
is joining us right now. JP. First of all, Husher
(01:32:49):
fourth of July holiday weekend, going doing great.
Speaker 5 (01:32:53):
Gentlemen, Happy for the July weekend to both of you
and all of our listeners here. I'm here in the
great state of Michigan accent. Asked yesterday to play in
the alumni baseball game at my high school, so the
first time I had played on that field in twenty
five years. I had a great time yesterday. But guys,
let's say it's about four to twenty Eastern time. I
(01:33:15):
basically just finally was able to get out of bed
and walk and walk across to pick up the phone.
So paying I'm paying the toll today. My body said, John,
you're forty three. You haven't been doing stuff like this
in a while.
Speaker 4 (01:33:30):
And so I got a nice.
Speaker 5 (01:33:31):
Little reminder about starn in cleets for a couple hours.
But just had a great time. I got to swim
the back a little bit. And it's really cool to
be able to celebrate Garber High School baseball in the
great city of Essexville, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
Well, right now, we're watching your Tigers just score six
runs in the top of the tenth inning right now
as they are ready to blow out the Guardians up
seven to one in this game. But I was at
the Dodgers game on Wednesday, which of course is the
night at the Clayton kershe got the three thousandth career strikeout.
It was unbelievable atmosphere Dodgers Stamman, look at Dodgers White
(01:34:07):
Sox and you've got a full sellout middle of the week.
I mean, it's absolutely crazy. Well, let's put in perspective,
three thousand career strikeouts because with the changing, the evolution
of the starting pitcher in Major League Baseball, I think
for the worst. I mean, is Kershaw going to be
the last pitcher ever to cross that threshold of three
(01:34:29):
thousand career strikeouts?
Speaker 5 (01:34:32):
Ever?
Speaker 4 (01:34:32):
Is a It's a big word.
Speaker 5 (01:34:34):
So I'm I'm going to always default to say that
someone at some point in the future will find his
way to get to it.
Speaker 4 (01:34:41):
Is it?
Speaker 5 (01:34:42):
Is it Paul Schimes, he certainly you'd have to say,
has a shot at it. But the thing is, you've
got to be two things, actually we'll say three things.
You got to get to the big leagues at a
really young age, you've got to be great, and you've
got to be healthy. And those three things are really
tough to do. And I think the fact that we
(01:35:04):
don't really have an obvious candidate who's above two thousand
strikeouts and clearly on the way there just tells us
the era that we're in right now. And there are
fewer pitchers in the history of the game who have
three thousand strikeouts than there are hitters with three thousand hits.
Speaker 2 (01:35:24):
Hey, it's by the way, that is thirty three to twenty.
It's not even close. I mean, there's ninety three hitters
with three thousand hits.
Speaker 5 (01:35:32):
Yeah, it's not even close. So if you're if you
are so, a two hundred strikeout year is a dominant year,
that is, that is dominance over the full scope of
the season. Okay, you have to do that for fifteen years, right,
just mats to get to.
Speaker 2 (01:35:50):
Three thousands, and you're going to have to do that
with reduced innings, right, I mean, I mean, forget, forget
three thousand strike Do you ever think a picture is
ever they have over three thousand innings pitched in a career.
Speaker 5 (01:36:04):
Well, that and that to me is maybe the even
more elusive elusive number, right, I mean, we think about
if you're striking out.
Speaker 4 (01:36:12):
More than one batter per inning. Let's let's put it
this way.
Speaker 5 (01:36:16):
There are way more starters who are striking out one
more batter more than one batter p inting than are
clearly on the path to being a perennial two hundred
inning a year pitcher. That's just that's just the mathematics
of things. Because it's now a very small minority of
pitchers were able to get above the two hundred inning
(01:36:37):
mark for a season and not just do it, but
then do it consistently and do it while staying healthy.
San Diiel contin did it and had one of the
highest innings counts we had seen in recent years.
Speaker 4 (01:36:50):
Then what happened.
Speaker 5 (01:36:51):
He got hurt and he missed the year, and now
he's just kind of coming back and getting to be himself.
So that's where, yeah, I say it's again the math
tells you it's two hundred times fifteen, but really it's
like you have to be at that level for really
more like seventeen or eighteen years, because you have to
realize you're probably going to miss a year plus at
(01:37:11):
some point to get Tommy John. Even the guys that
are very durable basically get Tommy John at some point
in their journey and then there's no promise that you're
going to come back and be dominant. So it's just
it is a different, different time.
Speaker 4 (01:37:24):
And we've talked about this before.
Speaker 5 (01:37:25):
One of my favorite things that I've been able to
do and working on our Road to Cooper's Down podcast
is interviewing the Hall of Famers about what it was
like during their era. And I love making the point
that Ferguson Jenkins five times through three hundred plus innings, yep.
So the human body can do it. We can do
this people, but it's just hard to do it when
(01:37:48):
you're telling yourself that you've got to try to throw
Max Effort or Max Vilo in the nastiest stuff ever
on every pitch. That's the problem, and that's where the
system breaks.
Speaker 3 (01:37:59):
J They were Kershaw here because some numbers that I
found that I found very interesting, because the question is
how good is this guy? Right, he's the twentieth now
with three thousand strikeouts, but he is only one of
five guys in that top twenty that did it under
twenty years. Everyone else needed twenty plus years to do it.
You have c season bat there in nineteen Paedroid eighteen.
(01:38:19):
My guy Max Schurzer you mentioned Fergie Jenkins right now
did it in nineteen and Kershaw's in his eighteen season.
Kershaw's also done it in fewer innings than any of
those guys in two thousand, seven hundred and eighty seven innings.
Is he up there with those names that we see
ahead of him when you talk about the names that
I've already mentioned, But then you got guys kind of
behind him, like a Mike weusen Her, like a like
(01:38:39):
a Glavin a Cy Young that's don't have the three
thousand strikeouts that Kershaw has. But some people might look
at some of those pictures and say, oh, well, they
were better pictures than Glen Where do you Has he
a top ten guy for you, top twenty guy, top
How good was Kershaw?
Speaker 5 (01:38:57):
It's a very fair question. I'll say this. When you
look at his adjusted ERA plus so basically what era
plus means, it's a really good statistic to look at
on Baseball Reference that basically indexes his era in comparison
to the other to other piers historically because it adjusts
(01:39:18):
for the various league and ballpark factors of the time
in which he pitched. Okay, so the most similar the
guy that he really tracks carefully with, the most similar
pitcher for him through his career and through this age
in the history of the game is Pedro Martinez. Kershaw
is basically Pedro the Pedro of this this year they
(01:39:41):
would have overlapped. Briefly, there was actually one playoff series.
How about this. You go back and look at the
two thousand and nine NLCS Philly's Dodgers. Both Kershaw and
Pedro started games in that series, so that their careers
overlapped for this brief moment in time. But basically, if
you look at Baseball Reference, Pedro Martinez his numbers, they're
(01:40:04):
almost exactly the same as Kershaw. So Pedro his era
plus for his career is one fifty four, for Kershaw
it's one fifty five, meaning Kershaw was fifty five percent
better than the average pitcher during the time that he pitched,
Pedro fifty four percent better. So and again we compare
(01:40:24):
it for a long time. And maybe it's because Kershaw
is not going to get three hundred wins and Pedro's
not going to get three hundred, and Kofax didn't get
three hundred. It's that it's that extremely great peak and
without maybe getting three hundred wins, but certainly in the
case of Pedro and Kershaw getting more than two hundred. Now,
(01:40:44):
I don't know that. I guess I wouldn't say that
Kershaw was ever quite as at the absolute peak peak peak,
as dominant as Kofax was for his time. But I
think that the overall numbers say that he is certainly
in the inner circle. And I would say comfortably when
you look at especially the offense and the bats, the
kersherie of the face he has been I believe, one
(01:41:07):
of the ten greatest pitchers in the.
Speaker 4 (01:41:09):
History of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
And just to piggyback on that too, the comparison between
Pedro and Kershaw. Pedro Martinez is one of my favorite athlete,
not just baseball players, He's one of my favorite athletes
of all time.
Speaker 2 (01:41:18):
I think he's great on TV also too. I love him.
Speaker 3 (01:41:20):
But as I mentioned before, Kershaw innings, it took twenty
eight eighty seven innings for Pedro twenty eight twenty seven
how much closer?
Speaker 2 (01:41:29):
How much closer? And I did, who can you get
between them? And also keep it yeah, well, and also
keep in mind, you know, since nineteen thirteen, Lowe's career
era with a pitcher of the least two thousand innings
pitch is Clayton Kershaw. So I mean wow, So that
is that? That standineteen thirteen, nineteen thirteen, So Lowe's career
(01:41:50):
area of the least two thousand innings pitch Kershaw's number one,
two point five to one. All right, the show Heyo
Tawani situation. So Dodger fans can get a little frustrated
here one inning pitch, one inning pitch, two INNI pitch
yesterday and the second and he strikes out the side.
They take him out of the game with a two
nothing lead. They bring in Robleskin, the lead is gone
(01:42:13):
uh and they end up losing again to their hated
rival Astros. Are you in favor of the way the
Dodgers are treating this comeback on the mound for show? Hey, O'tani?
Or are we gotten to the point of ridiculousness? Where
at least come on three innings? Four innings? What's the harm?
Speaker 5 (01:42:33):
Here's here's what I have to say about it with
Otani and the Dodge. And I get it that the
fans want to see him pitch more. He's gone one, one,
two two total total six innings pitch so far this season.
Speaker 4 (01:42:46):
They've been six of.
Speaker 5 (01:42:47):
The most closely washed innings in the history of the
game because of who it is. But I get it
that he is now basically over four starts accumulated what
you would normally consider to be a starts worth of pitching.
This is what I have to say about Otani, and
I know it's not going to be a popular answer.
This situation is really only to be judged at the
(01:43:11):
end of the year, when you can tell me how
many innings can he pitch in October? And how good
is he once he gets there? This team, while not perfect,
is first place now relatively comfortably. They're going to be
in the playoffs. The entire idea is, I guess this.
(01:43:32):
The Dodgers are supposed to be good enough that they
don't really need Kershaw or they don't really need Otani
to pitch them into the postseason. But he is going
to be their difference maker once he gets that, once
they get there, once he gets there. So that's where
he is the guy that's going to avoid they hope
(01:43:55):
what happened to be those opener specials that we saw
them have against the Mets and the Padres where they
almost lost the whole whole thing. There, to avoid those
really short starts for the Dodgers in the postseason, that's
what he's here to do. So if if you're gonna
tell me if he's gonna throw six innings in the
NLCS against the Phillies, that I'm gonna tell you, then
(01:44:18):
this whole plan has worked. But if if we're still
if we're getting to October and he's still stuck on
three to four innings, which I don't think is gonna
be the case. I think that by the way they'll
be built up. This is basically, if you think about it,
this is the progression that you would have normally seen
on a minor league rehab situation. But he can't do
that because they need him to hit, so he can't leave.
(01:44:40):
So these innings would be happening if he were if
he was a normal mortal person. This isn't be happening
at Oklahoma City or in Great Lakes, Michigan something like that. Instead,
he's got to do it while concurrently being there the agent.
So for all those reasons, I'm totally fine with it,
provided the progression remains on track for him to be
an impactful starter over six innings or more in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (01:45:02):
All right, very good. By the way, school ball is
having a historic here. Could be back to back, back
to back triple crowns. Unreal, unreal. Cofax did it, Lefty
Grove did it. I think there was one other. Oh
he was Grover Creed and Alexander only three pitchers to
have back to back triple crowns leading the league and
wins strikeouts in the era. All right, he is.
Speaker 5 (01:45:23):
Next level, And I tell you what people in Michigan.
Speaker 4 (01:45:26):
Obviously I live here.
Speaker 5 (01:45:27):
They're just I was at that game, misteryd Hey, school's
pitching tomorrow, and people and people just it is a
conversation topic now every time he's on the mound, it
is it is something to behold.
Speaker 2 (01:45:36):
We needed something that is show hand, Aaron Judge.
Speaker 3 (01:45:39):
Well, remember I asked you last week, where's the stories
that are pulling Honestly, where's the guys that are pulling
us in this season?
Speaker 4 (01:45:45):
This is it.
Speaker 5 (01:45:46):
We got some great stories. How about cal Rally? As
they here we go. Okay, from now we're gonna be
talking will be all All Star Game focused. A week
from now, you'll have cal Rally grew up in the
Carolina at the All Star Game in Atlanta. His dad's
going to be throwing his home run derby pitches. That,
my friend, is a great baseball story.
Speaker 2 (01:46:05):
And when he breaks eron Judges American League recor when
he hits a sixty third home run, you'll be talking
plenty about cal Rawley. All right, great stuff, JP, Thanks
so much. We'll check in with you again next week.
Thank you have a great week. God bless JP, my friends,
God bless you.
Speaker 5 (01:46:19):
Always love our conversations.
Speaker 4 (01:46:20):
Thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (01:46:21):
There is the great John Paul Morosi. All right, now
let's find out what is trending as she gets ready
for her own show coming up at the top of
the hour.
Speaker 7 (01:46:32):
Here we carry roads, that's right, and you know who's
going to be anchoring for my show is.
Speaker 4 (01:46:40):
Here? Is here?
Speaker 2 (01:46:43):
So sometimes I hear Bree late night.
Speaker 8 (01:46:45):
Yes, she's been producing, and she filled in a lot
this week because uh Coop was out Ben Maller's producer.
Speaker 7 (01:46:52):
So she has been She has had a bunch.
Speaker 8 (01:46:54):
Of overnights all week and she's here being a good
friend and gonna anchor for my show.
Speaker 2 (01:47:01):
I've been doing a lot of late night TV recently.
And as soon as I, you know, finished, I turned
on Fox Sports Radio. Of course, all of a sudden
I hear a very.
Speaker 7 (01:47:10):
Oh yeah, like the cheese we're ready over.
Speaker 2 (01:47:14):
Which is delicious. And I'm late to the party about
Bree cheese, bre cheese.
Speaker 3 (01:47:19):
I went to a winery and had the chool and
I was like, what is this creaminess?
Speaker 2 (01:47:24):
What is this going on right now?
Speaker 3 (01:47:25):
What is this creaminess of this cracker with the grape
and the wine and this cheese, Like, oh, that's Brie.
Speaker 2 (01:47:30):
I'm like, Okay, where's she at? And I want to
know how does she make this cheese?
Speaker 7 (01:47:37):
It's not that but breed like the cheese. That is
how she likes to say it. All right, guys, let's
check in on a baseball.
Speaker 8 (01:47:44):
The Subway series between the Yankees and the Mets did
get interesting for a second.
Speaker 7 (01:47:49):
Yankees were AUP five zero.
Speaker 8 (01:47:51):
Mets cut the deficit to one, but the Yankees added
another run.
Speaker 7 (01:47:55):
So they're up six. Ford is the bottom of the
ninth inning. Yankees tried to trying to avoid the sweep.
Speaker 1 (01:48:00):
Here.
Speaker 8 (01:48:01):
The Tigers, well, they scored a lot in the tenth Innian. Yeah,
they defeated the Guardians seven to two. Trek scoobls seven innings,
pitch three hits, ten strikeouts, and that game is officially over.
The Red Sox in the Nationals have been playing for
what feels like forever, and the Red Socks are up
six to three bottom of the ninth inning, about to start.
The Rays up on the Twins four to two bottom.
Speaker 7 (01:48:21):
Of the eighth inning.
Speaker 8 (01:48:22):
White Sox edging the Rockies in Colorado three to two
top of the fifth inning, And we move on to
the games that have already wrapped up like.
Speaker 7 (01:48:28):
The Orioles, who did complete a three game sweep of
the Braves.
Speaker 8 (01:48:32):
Two to one was the final score, Bryson's stop with
the go ahead home run, and the Phillies held on
to defeat the Reds three to one. The Blue Jays
etched the Angels three to two, and the Brewers defeated
the Marlins.
Speaker 7 (01:48:42):
Three to one.
Speaker 8 (01:48:44):
And after a rocky start for Carlos outcraz at Wimbledon,
he got it together. He's advancing to the quarterfinals, winning
his fourth round match in four sets. Five seed and
American Taylor Fritz is also headed to the quarterfinals. And
do not forget that the Konkokom Gold Cup Final USA
takes on mex Ago seven Eastern.
Speaker 7 (01:49:01):
Fox t the beach is very excited.
Speaker 2 (01:49:04):
You you say him win it.
Speaker 3 (01:49:08):
That's why when we first talked about this, when Chris
and I had the over ended, we're gonna three or
more points for the for the group.
Speaker 2 (01:49:15):
I said, dude, they're winning the group. I like this regime.
We're winning this whole damn thing. Hold on, I need
to hear Mon say con cook, con cook, I say
conca ca. You know, I'm like, yeah, conkak cap no,
and I have to do television again tonight, so I'm
gonna be talking about this obviously. So if I throw
it out there, conk cook cat con cookops cutap gold Cup,
(01:49:41):
I'm gonna work on that.
Speaker 5 (01:49:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:49:42):
And also that trade of Kevin Durant going to Houston,
it's officially processed seventeen.
Speaker 7 (01:49:47):
All of that is good. Kevin Durant gave a goodbye.
Speaker 8 (01:49:50):
To Phoenix and his Twitter account saying thank you and
that he's excited for Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:49:55):
So that's so overdone because the Phoenix thing was terrible.
It was we had no fun there.
Speaker 7 (01:50:00):
But what is he supposed to say?
Speaker 2 (01:50:02):
Nothing?
Speaker 7 (01:50:03):
You think nothing?
Speaker 2 (01:50:03):
Nothing but that?
Speaker 7 (01:50:04):
I mean, he's so Clere's the thing she Kevin Durant
is so active in being a troll that he can't
not say it.
Speaker 2 (01:50:11):
No, he can't help. Honestly, have you ever seen an
athlete of that superstar level be more effected by social
media than Kevin Durant Lebron James Well.
Speaker 7 (01:50:23):
Because I don't think Kevin Durant's affected. Kevin Durant's funny.
Speaker 2 (01:50:26):
Yes, he is so bent out of shape. I think
he did.
Speaker 7 (01:50:31):
And now now his responses are like bro I'm in
my mansion.
Speaker 3 (01:50:34):
I'm chilling younger Durant was, but that's a piece from
being from that area. I know, man, there's a certain
pettiness that comes with us. So like, if you want
to just keep pushing this, like okay, I'll just troll
with you now. I mean, my line is, you want.
Speaker 2 (01:50:49):
Because you want some attention. So I'm gonna get the
people that are trolling. They're trying to get the attention.
You're giving it to them.
Speaker 7 (01:50:57):
You know, I don't have I don't have the pay
to do with it, but it seems like Katie does.
And if that's what he likes to do, then by
all means, go ahead. Stroll back.
Speaker 2 (01:51:06):
By the way, when Twitter first started and we were
first getting on Twitter, right and you know, I didn't
really understand how how this thing works. And I got
some guy lighting me up about something, I mean, completely
took out of context something I said on a radio show,
and I started to engage with this guy, and it
was it was a rabbit hole, like there was no
(01:51:27):
you know, and I was like, what am I doing? Someday?
Speaker 3 (01:51:30):
Most sometimes you just you ain't got nothing else to do.
Next to my line, my line is you want some attention,
no problem, I'll give you something, because at the end
of the day I'm still gonna go in the same
studio and still do what I do.
Speaker 2 (01:51:44):
I just yes. So I call it hate listening.
Speaker 3 (01:51:48):
People tune in sometimes so they can pick apart what
you're gonna say. Are they watched so they can pick
apart what you're going It's called hate watching. Me personally,
I don't give time to nothing I don't like. If
I don't like a show, I don't watch it. And
that's what's weird to me. So if you want to
get you want some attention, All right, bro, here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:52:07):
Let's go on the rare occasions and that I will
that someone will say something on social media that will
least spark a response for me if I do and
I try to be civil, you know. Oh and then
ninety nine percent of the time they come back saying,
oh man, you know, I really enjoy listening to you.
You know, maybe you were a little out of turn today,
(01:52:27):
but you know I still listen. I'm like that, Steve.
Speaker 3 (01:52:29):
It's always when you say something about a team they
like or player, they're like, don't agree with everything else
you say.
Speaker 2 (01:52:35):
But if you attack their team or you attack their guy.
How did that guy get a show? What is he doing?
I'll day, We're the same as everybody out there. We
all have opinions. Right once came one of the Fox
Sports Radio studios. Don't forget after the show. The podcast
is going up. So if you miss any of today's show,
(01:52:55):
you got to check out the podcast. Just search Fox
Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts, follow and review
the podcast. Again, just search Fox Sports Radio wherever we
gets podcasts to see today's show posted right after we
get off the air. All right, coming up on the
other side, we're gonna get ready for another big week,
yeah in the world of sports, and yes we will
(01:53:15):
get a prediction from a man that knows on this
Konkokoff final between USA and me. I'm so excited. I'm
gonna go home and they left over. This is Fox
Sports Sunday, Harbin and Husky here in the Fox Sports
Radio studios. Fox Sports Sunday is actually the name of
(01:53:39):
this show. I want to thank all the people that
make this show what it is every single week. Mon
See getting ready for her show right now, coming up
with Carrie Rose, always doing a brilliant job, Chris after
a little explanation on one of his perfet picks outstanding today, Chris,
(01:54:00):
get it down to Steve to try to see I
like the fact and this is something I always appreciate
about Chris. He thinks outside the box. We like to
think outside the box on this program. But there's sometimes
you know, you sometimes you think about something it really
sounds good and then you sort of put it down
on paper and maybe it's not quite as good as
(01:54:20):
you thought it was going to be. Maybe a little.
But you know, once you explained it to me, I
figured that, yeah, it just it took a second. We
won't do anything like that again. We'll get you. I
don't know everything. I don't know everything about the try
to keep perfect picks like very relevant to going on
and NBA is relevant. But that conversation wasn't something you knew.
(01:54:42):
And also it is a very slow period of the
calendar right now. You know that NBA is a relevant
common noise. Well, I'll explain in a second, and there
are I know what you're saying, but I'll explain it.
I want to acknowledge Shade because he also when you
when you have this time of the year, well, I
said nothing. You know, well, he's trying to figure out
(01:55:03):
again what he is. Notoriously a slow time of the
sports year. We're still three weeks away from preseason NFL
and then we're fully engaged in football, right, you know,
we got the All Star Game in baseball, but you know,
come on, I mean, we'll have the trade deadline. The
good thing is the NBA free agency. But guys, the
(01:55:24):
w NBA from a gambling standpoint, there's what point I
made with Jeff Schwartz the last couple of weeks. You know,
if you listen to our weekend bet MGM shows, and
I listened to a guy like Bill Crack, Coocker Murgers,
you know, a long time the Crack. He's sitting there
(01:55:45):
and he's breaking down w NBA. And I'm saying, this guy,
I'm guarantee you never talk one second of w NBA.
But here's the thing Jeff Schwartz said, because I asked
him about, you know, WNBA gambling versus NBA gambling, goes Steve,
here's the difference. You know, the guys laying down the
odds in the NBA don't miss you know, they're they're
(01:56:06):
all over that stuff. They haven't caught up with the
w NBA. You want to make some money, listen to
our plays in the w NBA. You don't make money
because they haven't caught up to that yet. On the props,
it's the best place. I'm telling you, the WNBA. All
of college and my friends, I mean some under are
rolling right now. See that love the liberty. All right,
(01:56:31):
let's break it down then, cook con cook coff conka
CoV Final between US and Mexico. Mexico uh.
Speaker 3 (01:56:40):
US favored in this match, as we should be riding
a five match winning streak right now. And Chris and
I both big soccer guys. I just like the regime.
I like the I like the aggressiveness that they play with.
I like that they don't hold back.
Speaker 2 (01:56:53):
They are an attacking style team now and they have
not been that for over a decade. Us A alwy
supposed to play conservative.
Speaker 8 (01:57:00):
No go go, go, go go go.
Speaker 2 (01:57:03):
You got kids like Riches and Tillman. Tillman.
Speaker 3 (01:57:05):
Let me tell you, guys, Tillman and Luna there their
next their USA's next stars. Pay attention to those names.
These guys are good now. They may not be in
BAPE and they may not be l mean lamal from
a Spay. I get that, but these guys are good.
And Luna's riding a back to back match go streak
right now. Yeah, and Tilman's take, he's missed about four
He's got three goals, already, got three goals in five
(01:57:27):
and sis he's missed like four goals just I mean
by a half of Okay, let me, he's going to
be target when he takes his shot.
Speaker 2 (01:57:34):
Okay, next year World Cup comes to the SAH, the
whole country. Obviously we get an automatic slot. It sounds
like we've earned that slot every time we get to
the World Cup. And I'm like everybody else, the World
Cup is the biggest event, biggest every four years, no
question about that. The world is watching. I got fully engaged.
The first time I really got engaged in World Cup
(01:57:56):
was nineteen ninety four. I mean I'd followed it before that,
but in ninety last hours here in America exactly, and uh,
I was married and newly married, and my father in
law from Mexico was a huge, huge soccer fan and
really got me connected. That year was a nice run
for the US, and that uh got Colombia. Yeah, Colombia
(01:58:18):
was got to the corse Gott in the quarters. I
believe it was got to the quarters that year against Brazil.
Yes to Brazil, not so loster Brazil. Uh so what
you're you're talking because you know we have the embarrassment
of missing the World Cup, not even qualifying. What do
you expect next year for the United States and the
World Cup?
Speaker 3 (01:58:35):
I mean, if I wanted to go out on the limit,
just be who I am. I said, we'll get out
of our group. But of course I got to see
who's going to be in the group. I had to
put the group together. But I'm just looking at this
squad and this this team that we're putting on the pitch. Now,
they're younger, they're faster, they're more aggressive.
Speaker 2 (01:58:47):
Soccer. To me, football is an aggressive game. You gotta go.
You gotta push, You can't sit back. You gotta go.
Speaker 3 (01:58:54):
You gotta move the ball, gotta run your set pieces,
you gotta be good on corner, and you gotta have
great timing and defensive blocks, not just from your netminder.
Speaker 2 (01:59:02):
You need the back guys to slide in and make a.
Speaker 3 (01:59:06):
Tack without getting a penalty in the penalty box and
giving up a kick like we did. I think it
was against Haiti or well just when we just took
a bad penalty. You can't take those penalties in US.
Ain been doing that so much and you lose those
matches when you don't play that way. You get some
young speed, you get the ball on the outside, move
it to the inside, then get your wings and get your.
Speaker 2 (01:59:23):
Forwards flying to your striker, flying and going.
Speaker 3 (01:59:25):
Forward like they've been doing in this entire for wait
a minute of every USA matching this Gold Cup, every
single man, I haven't missed nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:59:32):
That's how they're playing out. That's how we're gonna bet
Mexico to to one today.
Speaker 3 (01:59:36):
Gold Cup comes back to the United States of America
for America today.
Speaker 2 (01:59:40):
All right, here's what frustrates me. When you're talking about
a sports biggest event, which the World Cup is. Why
are some of these matches actually decided by penalty kicks.
I don't I don't get that. I mean it, just
especially when he Old clouds, I don't care if you
play for three I'm I'm with you. I'm with you.
(02:00:02):
I don't care. It should not come down to peeks
in a World Cup match. Look at they don't, don't
they change the overtime rule in the NHL. Of course
they do. You play until somebody scores. What's more exciting
than that? Nothing? Nothing to me. Next these goal wins
as always, That's why I will play a hockey time
(02:00:23):
in playoff, Oh my god, anything in sports, Yes, next
goal wins. Okay, if you want to say, let's go
to the one Monzi carrier getting ready to go, don't
go anywhere you want to come here on Fox Sports
Radio
