Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, straight fi, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire for Tuesday, September twenty third. Oh my goodness,
my day that football. I just witnessed the most impressive
win of the young NFL season, folks. I mean, I mean,
(00:31):
I had a just a terrible weekend picking games, and
I could not have been more wrong about Detroit and Baltimore. Folks.
I don't know anybody who had Detroit being up fourteen
in the fourth quarter. I don't know anybody who had that,
and in what I can only assume is a real
(00:52):
blow to the Ravens fans who came into the season
gassed up because a lot of the analytics had the
Ravens is the best team in the league to be
at this point, Like, just holy count, what do we need?
Like a reality check? Derek Henry's fumbling in every single game.
Our defense can't stop a nosebleed. Our defense gave up
forty one to Buffalo and thirty eight to Detroit and
(01:12):
we're Week three. There was no help on the way, Okay,
Cale van Noy, Yeah they miss him. He ain't gonna
save the day when he comes in. I mean, what
an impressive win for the Detroit Lions. I mean, it
was really never in doubt. It was a good game.
It was a close game throughout, and Baltimore's defense just
cannot get to stop my son with a devastating fantasy
loss because the Ravens had negative four points for him.
(01:35):
I mean, you expect the Ravens, you know, Jared Goskin
of a statue in the pocket, they'll get to zero sacks,
two hundred and twenty four rushing yards allowed. I mean,
Detroit had ten possessions, five touchdowns on a field goal
against the Ravens at night on the road. The Lions
had two touchdown drives over ninety five yards. Folks, I'm
(01:59):
at a problem wrapping my head around this now. If
we're being completely honest, Rob g had a great point
before we started recording. He's like, well, the Ravens started
oh to two last year and then they got hot,
you know, they peel all five in a row. Whatever,
But this this feels different. They start out one and two,
the defense is getting absolutely just run over. And oh,
(02:23):
by the way, if you want to and again, nobody's panicking,
but if you do want to be like, oh Jesus,
you have to go to Arrowhead this weekend and face
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid on a short on short rest.
Then you have a date with the Houston Texans. Now,
the Texans, I think we would agree they stink, but
(02:45):
at some point they you know, CJ. Stritt is going
to figure it out, probably right. I mean, I think
the Ravens will still be considerable favorites at home, and
then they get the Rams at home. So let's say
they lose to the Chiefs and the Rams beat the Texans.
You're looking at two and four heading into your early buy.
I gotta be honest, I'm absolutely floored right now. Shout
(03:07):
out to Jared Goff. I mean, listen, I still don't
think the Lions are gonna be like amazing this season.
But how efficient is this twenty of twenty eight for
two hundred two yards seven point two yards per attempt,
David Montgomery twelve carries buck fifty one. He looks like
he has more juice than Jamiir Gibbs. I'm and Ross
Saint Brown with a touchdown catch, a great touchdown catch,
(03:29):
and after it, you know, I guess there was the
microphone was a little too close to him, and he goes,
he yells, I run this, and then he said, like
the racial epithet. It was loud on television. And then
you go to the Ravens and they're like they can't
stop anything. Let me just see Ravens tackles for loss.
Oh they have four so still guys were getting in
(03:50):
the backfield, but they got out classed. And oh, by
the way, suddenly they can't protect Lamar Jackson. Seven sacks
for Detroit guys. This is I mean, listen and loathed
to use the word ass kicking, but what else could
you use? I know it was tied, let's see hear
it was twenty one all in the fourth quarter where
(04:11):
and the first play I believe in the fourth quarter
the Ravens ran an I'm sorry, the Lions ran an
incredible just an awesome play where they had they hit,
they had they called time out. They lined up what's
his name in the backfield, Gibbs and Saint Brown. Goff
(04:33):
pitches it to Saint Brown, who runs a couple of
yards and then pitches to Gibbs. Not quite a hooking line.
They definitely not a hooking ladder. Just kind of like
a double handoff and it was a walk in touchdown
that Detroit the lead, and after that it was never
looked back. This is a second fourth quarter of this
season that the Ravens got housed. Remember Buffalo came back
(04:55):
and smoked them in Buffalo and now this one in Detroit.
Are they running out of gas? I don't know. I mean,
Eric Henry looks so good in the opener, folks, he
had twelve carries for fifty yards. I'm flummoxed rob by
this result. I'm not listen. I know, you know, we have,
like Buffalo, Baltimore and the Chargers seem to be the
(05:15):
consensus three best teams in the AFC. Does this take
Baltimore off that? And I think you have to given
the defensive holes inability to stop anybody in the fourth quarter. Now,
we'll give them a pass from stopping the Cleveland Browns
(05:35):
because they don't have any offense with Joe Flacco. But
it's is gonna be troubling.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Is this? So?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Is this a game here this week against the Chiefs
where all of a sudden, Patrick Mahomes and company wake
up and the offense looks good because they're facing the Ravens.
Or were the Ravens just caught looking ahead to that game.
This is a non conference game against the Lions. Maybe
they were just thinking, hey, man, I cannot wait to
kill the Chiefs, the same way the Packers kind of short.
I might have been looking ahead to the Cowboys game,
(06:03):
and that's part of the reason they blew it to
nothing lead. And I know some people will say, hey,
that stuff doesn't happen. You don't ever look anybody. Guys
play any sports level, rec league, high school, college. This
happens all the time. I just didn't see it because
I didn't think the Ravens would be that stupid. And
I'm hurting financially, and I'm hurting because the Ravens stink
and Rob this is I'm just floored.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah, I'm surprised we ruin the podcast.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
You know, when you told me that you lost so
much money that you were out of house and home,
I was like, well, how are we going to get
electricity and Wi Fi to finished this podcast? I don't
see it happening. Look, man, this was shocking, I think
is the word I wanted to describe last night's game.
You know, not that Detroit wan, but how they won.
It was a belt to ask before, Like, they beat
the Ravens up and down the field and every which
(06:50):
way imaginable schematically with the trick plays you mentioned, just
physically ran the ball down their throat two hundred plus
yards rushing, and it made me wra have to rethink
how I view Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens now Offensively. Offensively,
they still fine, right, you know, say for Derek Henry
who suddenly became Ramandre Stevenson over this last three weeks
(07:12):
where he can't, you know, keep the ball in the
basket there.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
But defensively this is embarrassing.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Okay, On the season, despite having a top five offense,
Baltimore is negative net two point fifty.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Three total yards on the season.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
That would be just ahead of the New York Football Giants, right,
And the New York Giants suck so apparently by deductive
reasoning that they are right there with them. It's the
other teams here worse than the Giants, worse than the Jets,
right there with the Dolphins, and you know, the Bengals
and the Titans and are totally different stratasfield and not
about that, but that's number one number two. They have
(07:55):
allowed twelve hundred and forty five total yard through three games,
last in the NFL, thirty two points per game allowed,
second to last the NFL, two hundred sixty six pass
yards a game, third to last in the NFL. They're
bottom ten and third down defense. And I'm starting to wonder,
as excited as I was about Lamar and me picking
win the Super Bowl, me picking him to win the MVP,
(08:16):
is this another Bengals and Borough situation we got percolating
here in Baltimore. Because as good as that offense is,
and you saw that right right after Detroit goes like
nine eighteen plays and ninety five yards for a touchdown,
they've gone ninety yards later and it's like three plays
and Baltimore's back in the red zone.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Like that.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
They're explosive, they're fast, they're physical, any adjective you want
to use.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
For their offense. But that defense is terrible.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
And they have way too many good Pro Bowl, hell,
all pro level players in Patrick Queen and Kyle Hamilton
to be this bad. I don't know what the answer is,
but suddenly you're looking at a situation you mentioned in
Kansas City coming in next week one of those teams
is gonna be one in three on the season. The
(09:02):
last time either of those teams was one in three
was twenty fifteen. Like, where what is going to the football?
As we know it is falling apart? Where the Chiefs
even though we you know, we've been kind of calling
this for everybody year, they suddenly are very mediocre and Baltimore,
(09:25):
just like Cincinnati last year. As great as their offense is,
the defense is that bad.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
They're mediocre too.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Like, I don't know how you can feel good about
the Ravens right now given what we've seen from them defensively.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
It's it's horrible.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah, I'm looking at their PFF grades. Obviously they have
the game just ended and they have been updated, but
even going into the game, they're starting the guy Mike Green.
He was a kid out of Marshall who was kind
of twitched up and very very effective. He had some
character issues is why he dropped. He's graded out as
the one hundred and tenth out of one hundred and
sixteen edge rushers. They don't have anybody ready to ahead
(10:14):
of fifty fifth on the defensive front. They just don't
have dudes. Wiggins has looked good on the outside, the
young kid out of Clemson, but Marlin Humphrey's just getting cooked.
A'man ross Saint Brown roasted him on that touchdown on
the corner and then was talking running his mouth. Kyle
Hamilton's at the back end of the defense. What we like, right?
And Malachi Starks the young guy, he's all right, but
(10:35):
he's young. They just you're maybe the talent isn't there.
And listen, Rob, how many times do we talk about this?
When you pay your quarterback, sacrifices must be made elsewhere.
You don't want to make it on the offensive line
because then you're not protecting your investment. You can't really
invest in wide receivers because well, you paid your quarterback
and you do need to protect him, and you've got
a lot of other positions. Derek Henry was great, but
(10:57):
all of a sudden, he's got the fumbles. This I'm
trying not to overreact, Rob, but how can you not
when they now when they give up what uh six point.
Was it six point one yards per play?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (11:11):
Six point five yards per play? Like that's ridiculous. How
about this third down? You know, can you get off
the field on the money down? Lions seven of fourteen?
Fourth down? What are you dialing up? Three of three?
I mean, listen, it was a seven point game and
the Lions are going for fourth and two and then
a'm on Roger's cook someone I got to see the
replay against see Marlin Humphrey, probably Marlin Humphrey, Yeah, and
(11:32):
just catches it over his shoulder. I mean, Humphrey just
got worked like a turnstile. It was. It was bad
and all of a sudden. I think that, you know, ordinarily,
I think Chiefs games are kind of boring them out
on them. I don't really want to watch them. I
think that that's the game of the week for sure. No,
it certainly is a Jets Dolphins battle of oh and
three teams. There's a lot of Owen three out there.
(11:53):
I saw this stat, Rob How about this. Six teams
in the AFC have a winning record right now, six
out of sixteen. That's it. And the Cincinnati Bengals are
one of them. We know they're frauds because Burrow's out
for two months.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Just suthing Jagon.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
The Jags have a winning record.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
It's Buffalo, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, which is an absolute joke. I mean,
all the analytics say they're terrible.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
The Colts.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I guess maybe they're for rolling the AFC, the Jags
and the Chargers. What a whacky start to the season.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Yeah, and you mentioned it as far as next week's
game goes, because we'll get to the lines here in
a second. Obviously, I think we can agree that the
one seed is out of reach, even if it's only
been three weeks into the season. Right, Like, if you're Baltimore,
you already lost the tiebreaker to Buffalo. Buffalo's schedule, barring injury,
is a tiptoe through the tulips, Like this should be
no problem. They're looking at thirteen fourteen to fifteen wins minimum,
(12:52):
right with the way that schedule breaks out, one of
these teams gonna be one in three. We assume Buffalo
is going to be four and zero this time next week.
It's like, how on earth can you make up the difference?
Speaker 3 (13:04):
You can't.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Realistically, you're just giving them a win over the Saints
when they're favored by.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
Sixteen exactly exactly.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
I don't know so this game, even though I firmly
believe if Baltimore loses next week, and maybe I'm talking
about a turn, I think they're gonna make the playoffs.
Though I think that division gonna fall back them. They'll
find a way to win ten games. Will be fine.
But you're in a situation where you're gonna have to
go on the road. You might not be afraid of it.
You might be that concerned about it. You think, hey,
Lamar Jackson went on the road, Patrickmons went on the road.
(13:33):
But it's not ideal. It's not what you want to
have to do. You want to have the easiest, cleanest
path to the super Bowl as possible. And both of
these teams, because of the way they started the season,
are gonna have to find and fight an uphill battle
the rest of the way to give themselves a good chance.
They'll have a chance either way because their quarterbacks are
so great, but to give themselves a strong chance to
(13:55):
make a run. Was it too soon to call four
must win?
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:05):
I mean I yeah, I guess you could call it
a must win. I mean, is it Okay, is it
must win for both or just the Ravens. I would
say both, because I think even more so for the
Chiefs than the Ravens. Well, the Chiefs at least have
help coming, right. Xavier Worthy at some point will get healthy.
Rashi Rice's suspension will be lifted, so they'll get an
injection in their offense. Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Is that like full strength?
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Bro?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
I don't think.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
I think what works out for them if their division
isn't good.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Oh actually wait, I'm looking at the chief schedule. So
if they lose to the Ravens, after that, go to
the Jaguars. Not a layup, right, then they host the Lions.
It's not yet cold at Arrowhead, so I don't think
that's a layup, So actually those could be tough that
they play your Raiders. Raiders always fight the Chiefs hard.
Jayden Daniels, Josh Allen, Oh damn, Yeah, you're right. I
(14:52):
think this is a must win. Losers gotta leave.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Town, right they on the flip side, I mean Detroit.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Yeah, we gotta talk positive about the.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Yeah, we gotta talk about the line.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Like the Lions, they were left for dead after that
bludgeting they took in Week one, twenty seven to thirteen
of the Packers, and was it. They didn't score until
there was like three minutes left in the game period
like it was. It was embarrassing. And then yes, since then,
they've been a freight train. And I, honestly, I feel
stupid because.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
I picked the UH.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
I expected them to start the season slow, because I said,
two new coordinators, new interior offensive line. Even if they're
good by the end of the season, there's gonna be
a learning curve. It's gonna take a second for them
to get back to who they were the last couple
of seasons. It's this kind of stuff does not happen overnight.
And so after Week one, I'm patting my chest and
I'm like, hey see, I told you, like I know
ball And since then they they are a freaking wagon.
(15:46):
There's no stopping this scene. They look exactly, if not
better than what they were last year. The running game
is incredible. Montgomery and Gibbs is the best dynamic due
I've seen in years. Jared Goff coming into Money Day Night,
We'll see the updated numbers here. By this time, you
know we listened to the podcast, was completing eighty percent
of his passes at quarterback Aarman Ross Saint Brown is
(16:09):
a problem. Suddenly Laporte is back involved. Jamison Williams is
healthy and he's available, which is something he didn't have
earlier on in his career. And this team, if the
defense can be anything close to what they were against
Lamar Jackson and that with the pass rush, it was incredible. Like,
are we sure they're not the best team in the
NFC and better than the Packers, better than the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
I'm not ready to go there yet, so tell me this.
So they struggled against a good Packers defense, right, they
got to touchdown with like three minutes up. Since then
they hung fifty two on the Bears and thirty eight
on the Ravens. So that's ninety points. Are the Bears
and Ravens top ten defenses? Do? Because we love to
(16:54):
everybody overreacts, but rob do we really know if this
Lion's offense is great? Now? Doing it on the road
outdoors against the Ravens is like, holy shit, that's impressive.
I did not see that coming. They'll probably smash the
Browns at home this weekend. Then they go to the
Bengals no Joe Burrow. Then they go to Kansas City, Like,
this is a Lions team that's gonna make a lot
of people, including myself, possibly look stupid because we were
(17:16):
counting them out. I think I said no playoff for
the Lions. I bet my buddy, I said the Broncos
would have a better record than the Lions. That's looking
as and I and Broncos look like, I mean horrible.
Bot Nicks is just atrocious. And all of a sudden,
you know, these island games really can shape people's opinions,
all of them. Remember last week we saw the Atlanta
(17:38):
Falcons look great and an island spot against the Vikings.
Oh my gosh, Falcons looks so good. Then they get
their butts kicked against Carolina that now we get what
was the the other island game I'm spacing on, Oh,
Sunday night football last night? How How oh Chiefs are fine,
They're gonna be fine. Giants are terrible, terrible? Well in
a lot. The week before that, the Giants put like
sixty points on the board practically right had overtime loss.
(18:00):
I think they had thirty seven or whatever it was.
But like, these island games tend to lead to overreactions,
and I just wonder are we overreacting about the Ravens
and there maybe lack of defense, and then Detroit and
they're juggernaut of an offense's back, Like are we overreacting?
(18:21):
And we can't answer that now, but I just like
to keep the overreaction thing in front of mine.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
You know, Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk
lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at
Foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search
FSR to listen live with the Ravens.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
I don't think there's any way to say we're overreacting
because like this has not been a one week thing
or two like this is every game they've played, they've
given a yard, they've been gashed, even by the Cleveland
Browns they got gashed right like that. That defense has
just been subpar, to say the least. With Detroit. The
reason why I'm willing to float out even the idea
that they might be the best team in the NFC
(19:01):
is because we've seen this team now for what including
this year, what like twenty five games now, where they
have been one of, if not the best team in
that conference. They're right there with the Eagles, neck and neck.
I feel like the last year and a half or
so that now, last season didn't end the way they
wanted to. A part of it was because was they
like nine defensive starters were hurt. So you kind of
(19:23):
take that with a grain of salt. You say, hey,
if they're healthy, they're right there with everybody. And the
expectation was, and not just by me or you or
but a lot of people, was you can't lose your
both coordinators to head coaching gigs and you can't have
a reshuffled offensive line and expect to be just as
good as you were last season. Like that's unrealistic. The
(19:43):
law of averages say, if you were a fifteen win team,
you're a minimum is going to be thirteen factory their stuff,
you might be down ten to eleven. Right, that's the
way it is. And instead what they've done is they're
looking just like how they looked last year. They're looking
just how they look towards the end of twenty twenty three,
where they look like offensively good luck, because when you
(20:03):
can run the ball like that, it says the play
action and the weapons outside are so good. And Jared
Goff when he's on time, on target can sling it
with the best of them, and now that defense, which
is healthy for now, we'll see how they are moving forward.
Aiden Hutchinson, you forget, is right in the upper upper
tier pass rusher in the NFL. Brian Branch is an
all pro level safety, you know, Like they have guys
(20:25):
all over the field, and if they can stay upright,
we've seen what they can do productivity wise.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Yeah, I kind of tend to agree with you on
most of that. I guess we can wrap up here. Rob.
Some crappy news and there is some injuries. We got
to talk about Nick Bosa, the forty nine ers superstar,
out for the season with a torn acl and that
(20:53):
when I first heard it was such a gut punch
band because I think the Niners have the schedule to
really make a deep run. They they just can't stay healthy.
Uk is out, Jennings is out, Kittle is out, Erdie
was out. I mean, and there's somehow three and zero.
But it's like Rob losing Bosa. I don't think you
can win a Super Bowl without your best defensive player,
(21:15):
Like I practically would cross them off the list of contenders.
But they're gonna be there because of the offense and
Shitahand I don't know, man, it's disappointing. You probably didn't
have the same reaction. But I have some money on
the Niners to go to the Super Bowl, and I did.
I was disappointed in that.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
It just sucks. No, it's hard not to be disappointed.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
Like whether you know I'm a Raiders fan first and foremost,
you know that, But it doesn't mean I can't appreciate
good football. And I had to take a shower Cole
shower last night after we talked about Justin Herbert and
how I thought great he was right. So just because
I feel that way as a Raider fan doesn't mean
I can't be objective and say I want to see
the Niners at top health. I want to see them
(21:52):
at full strength. I like watching them play football. I'm
a brock Perdy fan and to see that team consistently
like year in and year out. If they're not the
most injured team, they're in like the top five.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
And the one year that they weren't, they made it
to the Super Bowl and they lost in overtime to
Mahomes and the Chiefs. So again, I don't want to
call for anybody's job I don't think that that's fair,
especially the lower level guys. You don't have the multimillion
dollar contracts. But whoever they're strength, the conditioning coaches mighty
to get called up to the office.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
Yeah, seriously, other injuries, ceed Lamb may go on the IR.
That is horrible news for Dallas. The only bet I have, well,
did I bet against them? Yeah, I dink I did bet.
I bet Packers minus six and a half against the
Cowboys on the road. I think Three Bay bounces back.
I don't know how Dallas operates without Cede Lamb. I'm
(22:47):
sure they'll cook up some stuff for pickens and maybe
he could eat, but I don't see that going well.
Najee Harris out for the year with an achilles that's
just terrible. So this is three injuries that are just like,
come on, you know who's caught it out for the season.
James Connor out for the seat like it's just snowballing.
At least no quarterbacks got hurt this week. And then
(23:07):
Rob this is not NFL. But I just saw this.
I don't I missed this totally. This afternoon. Fred van
Vliet has a torn acl out for this season. Oh
my God, I have the rockets, like maybe winning the championship.
They are stacked now Fred van Vliet, Like, who's the
leader in the locker room? We've been down this road
a million times. Kevin Durant ain't no leader right as
(23:29):
Shengoon is he the leader? I mean Van Vleet just
signed a fifty million dollar extension in June two years now.
They have the young kid, Reed Shepherd, Aaron Holiday, I'm
and Thompson maybe could you know shift a little bit?
But Van Vliet, like is a three point shooter, a
defensive bulldog and a leader in the locker room. That
is a huge loss for them. Man, I don't even know.
(23:53):
I'm curious your thoughts on that, Rob, as we wrap
up here.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
It's funny that you mentioned that because I was actually
texting someone earlier on Monday about that exact thing, you know,
because even though it's football season, I'm a hoops head.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
First, right, that's my first thing I want to talk about.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
And we were joking back and forth like, well, who
are they going to get? You know, that would happened
a month ago. Maybe they could have got in on
Chris Paul or just somebody. Somebody can be a legitimate,
twenty minutes a game point guard at the NBA level.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Yeah, and you know any name who's still available right now?
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Wait wait wait Dennis Shruter.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
No, it's a good guess. That was actually someone we
floated around.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Oh, D'Angelo Russell.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
No, he's with the Dallas Mavericks, highly decorated point guard
who happens to have experience playing with your best player.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Hold up, hold up, hold up, so he has stop
at Russell Westbok.
