Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up? Straight firefam, It's me Jason McIntyre, Straight
Fire for Tuesday, January seventh. I will say the inbox
on the GRAM has been flowing so much over the
last forty eight seventy two hours. Guys. You know, there's

(00:33):
such thing as a no fly zone. There's just stuff
I'm not going to touch. I'm sorry, you know that.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I will.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
You want to talk sports takes, gambling, fantasy movies. Have
I hyped Lions enough? You guys need to watch lion
s And I started Landman, it is excellent, Billy, Bob Thornton,
a couple other dude, it's good, very good stuff. But
there's just stuff, some stuff I cannot touch. I'm not
doing it. You know, I enjoy working, I enjoy provide

(01:00):
for my family, so I'm just not going there. Anyways.
Let's move on to more important things. So, uh, you know,
it's funny all football season I talk about the contest.
The gambling contest season ended. I was above five hundred,
forty six, forty fifty. It was like, I don't know,
fifty five hundred people entered. I finished eighteen hundred and

(01:21):
eighty nine. Not great. I was in the top I
think four hundred early in the season and then listen, man,
it's tough, but I did just just out of curiosity
look to see what happened and who won. So the
guy leading the contest, I think it pays three million
or four million dollars if you win it, and then
it trickles down whatever. So the guy was leading the
contest in week seventeen. In week eighteen, he goes one

(01:43):
in four and fell from first to third. That has
got he tied for third. That has got a sting.
I don't know the breakdown financially of what happens if
you finished first or third, but man, I how's that
guy got to sleep for? You know, like, listen, we
lost the local basketball men's league championship by two grueling defeat.

(02:04):
I think I've talked about it here on the podcast
led basically the entire way.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
We had a stack team.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
We were favored in the championship and at unbelievable turn
of events and you know, we just somehow lost. I
was in a stun stupor leaving the gym. I it
took me a while to pick up a basketball after that. Okay,
I don't know what it would be like if I
had was staring three million dollars in the face and
then I tumbled to third and you know, maybe you

(02:28):
get like, I don't know, two hundred, fifty thousand, five
hundred whatever, whatever. I don't know what the number of
breakdown is, but that one has to hurt. Oh my goodness. Anyways,
I did talk a lot about picks for this week,
and I really do like a bunch of games. I
will say the biggest item and we'll get to Black
Friday and all that other. Sorry, Black Monday in the

(02:49):
NFL shortly, not any real surprises. But I thought the
biggest story that I saw and it really it wasn't
even much of a story. It was just a tweet?
Are we calling them tweets? Adam Schefter puts out a tweet.
I don't know if it's X. Now Elon Musk took
it over, so I don't know if it's a tweet.

(03:10):
It can it be an X? He posted an X?
I don't. I don't think that's the thing. Anyways, Schefter
just made a mention of it. And there's really been
nothing else that is emerged but Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts
is still in concussion protocol. Guys, let's be real. That

(03:31):
is not good at all, and as a matter of fact,
that's very, very bad. I'm looking at how long it's
been he I think it's it looks like twenty days,
so the game will be essentially twenty days from when
he had his concussion. He's still in the protocol, okay,

(03:54):
I mean, yes, he still can clear it today Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
technically Saturday.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
And we don't.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
I mean, there's really been nothing coming out of Philly
about this. Hurts is not a huge social media guy.
The fact that he's still in protocol is troubling, and
as a result, I'm not that's the one game I
haven't bet. I would look strongly at the Eagles, but
I don't know if Hurts is gonna be okay, So
it's just gonna be a Tanner McKee playoff hut game.
I mean, do you need to do you need to

(04:23):
grab some some futures on the Packers? I don't know.
Line is holding at four. I saw it was three
and a half and four four and a half and
now it's back down to four. Waiting on Hurts. You
don't want to fire on the Eagles. And then Hurts
doesn't play, although I can't imagine him not playing, just
really depressing stuff and it could put a wet blanket.

(04:45):
And what I believe is the game of the weekend
Packers Eagles. All right, let's do black Monday. Doug Peterson
fired in Jacksonville. Mild surprise in that. Trent Bulky, Yes,
he's the guy who feuded in San Francisco with Jim Harbaugh. Okay,
like for whatever reason, wow, not for whatever reason. But

(05:07):
you guys know how life works and jobs work. It's
all about power and credit, and Trent Bulky and Jim
Harbaugh did not get along. Trent Balke thought, hey, I
built this team. Here's Jim Harbaugh getting all the credit
for taking us to the Super Bowl. I mean, never
mind that Harbaugh found and developed Colin Kaepernick. He remember,

(05:29):
he was a second round pick and Harball basically turned
Colin Kaepernick into a massive star for about two seasons.
And they came on the doorstep of winning the Super Bowl.
And then you know Tom Sula, not just Tom Sula,
but Balky and him had words. Balky runs him off,
and Balkey replaces him with Jim tom Sula, who's one

(05:49):
of probably the worst coaches in the NFL this century.
And you know, Balkey just continues to fail upward. He
knows how to work a room with an owner, and
he's kept, but Doug Peterson's fired. I don't even think
the Jags roster is that good. The Jags are kind
of a boring team, so nobody really talks about them.
But they've got Trevor Lawrence who is supposed to be
a massive superstar. And anyway, Doug Peterson's gone. I don't

(06:11):
know how attracted that job is. But honestly, if Patriots
job is good because of Drake May, Jets' job is
not good. I don't care what anybody says. It is
not a good job until I find out what Aaron
Rodgers wants to do. And Aaron Rodgers is probably so
ticked off at Woody Johnson that he's gonna hold the
franchise hostage. And you know, I mean, they're getting an
interview with Mike Rabel, right, so is Rabel gonna take

(06:35):
the job and then decide, oh wait, Aaron Rodgers is
not going to be here, and we're not gonna be
able to draft a quarterback high enough. So what are
we looking at? You're not bringing back Sam Darnold. Guys,
I don't know that Kirk Cousins is in play. All
of a sudden, it just starts to get messy. And
that's where you get to the point where you're like, damn,

(06:56):
the Jets job is not a good job, right. I
don't think that the Saints job, where there's a lot
of uncertainty, I don't think that's a good job.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
The one guy who did keep his job on Monday
was Antonio Pierce. He had a weird press conference. I
don't know if anybody saw it, but this guy's popping
off with all kinds of wacky stuff and essentially said
I wish I had started Aidan O'Connell instead of Gardner
Minshew like who says that I was shocked to hear

(07:39):
that he was rocking the starter jacket, which is very cool,
and you know, Pierce has a way of winning the
locker room. It's weird. I look this up. So there
were six quarterbacks taken in the top twelve last year.
Just absurd. The Raiders pick thirteen. Now, they hit a
home run with Brock Bauers, no doubt about it, right,
huge win, but they missed out on a quarterback, so

(08:01):
they did the Gardner Minshew AOC Desmond Ritter nonsense. So
this year it's largely viewed as a two quarterbacks in
the first round draft, A lot of them meh after that,
and the Raiders are picking six because of some late
season wins thank to Antonio Pierce. So again the Raiders
are going to be shut out on a quarterback. So
this is where it gets interesting. Tom Brady now part

(08:23):
of the ownership group. Does a quarterback try to get
to Vegas for the Tom Brady factor? I think that's
a legitimate question. You've got to ask yourself. I don't
know that Shador can will himself to the sixth pick.
I don't know if that's possible. I find it hard

(08:44):
to believe. But I mean, if you could go to Cleveland,
ew or Vegas, not bad. I think you probably would
want to go to Vegas, But how do you go
about getting there? Is Cleveland gonna be so hard line
that they're like, we're taking him. He's going to be
our air a parent Deshaun Watson. By the way, it
was interestingly revealed the day after the Brown secure the

(09:05):
number one pick that Deshaun Watson had a setback in
recovery from his achilles so it sounds like he ain't
gonna be ready for the beginning of the season. Not
great for Deshaun Watson, who has just absolutely cratered his
career as just fallen off the map. But then you
have to look okay, So if they can't get Shaduer,
maybe you take Jalen Milroe someone else. I don't know.

(09:27):
I'm wondering, is there a world where Kirk Cousins wants
to go to the Raiders? Does Sam Darnold become attractive
to the Raiders? I don't know. It's gonna be interesting,
and it always is because I don't know if you're
Kirk Cousins, you want to go the Jets or do
you wanna go to the Raiders? Like I don't know who.

(09:50):
That's a tough one. Again, with the Raiders, your chances
at the playoffs, well, I don't know. Three teams from
that division made the playoffs, Chargers Broncos Chiefs. So you're
thinking competitor the division, Well, I don't know, guys. AFC
East Patriots are on the come up with Drake May. Okay,
Dolphins might be competitive, although Tyreek Hill is being Tyreek

(10:11):
Hill and probably not gonna be there next year. We'll
see if two is healthy. They're competitive, but I don't know.
If you guys saw Jalen Ramsey went and posted one
of these stories about on Instagram, about someone who is undervalued,
and it was basically Jalen Ramsey saying, Hey, if Tyreek's here,

(10:31):
done here, y'all don't respect me. I'm out too. And
I start to wonder, did Mike McDaniel lose the locker
room in Miami? I mean, we know the GM hasn't
drafted well. At this point, it's save yourself and you
have to wonder, are we gonna start to see negative
stories about the GM or the coach this week because
you know who's gonna be planting those the opposite side

(10:53):
to save themselves and ingratiate themselves with the owner. It's
ugly out there, guys. This stuff is gross, But I
actually I would I mean, I don't know how much
finances matter to a guy like Kirk Cousins who's made
a shit ton of money in his career, But I
think the tech situation in Vegas is a lot more
favorable than the one in New York or New Jersey

(11:15):
if he wants to live in New Jersey. So the
quarterback coaching stuff, it is very very interesting to watch,
and it also is interesting to me that the Jets
who fired Salah way too early are struggling in their
coaching search and the Bears who fired Eberflus not too early.
I mean, it was what November. It was right after

(11:38):
that Thanksgiving game, and the Bears suddenly are struggling to
nab a head coach, and you wonder what Chicago it's like. Damn,
they got Caleb Williams. I mean they got I like
the offensive skill position guys. They've got some guys on defense.
This is a team that started four and two. They're
capable of being something. Can a coach harness that or

(12:03):
is in that division? It's too tough to expect them
to make some quantum leap from also ran in the
toughest division in football to oh damn, these guys got something.
I don't. Again, these are questions I don't have answers to,
but it sounds like the Bears have a front office
issue with Poles and Kevin Warren kind of battling over

(12:23):
wait for it, power and control and credit and a
lot of cooks in that kitchen in Chicago. I don't
know who goes there is. This is why the NFL
is fascinating. It's funny a successful NBA coach like Mike
Brown gets run off and it's barely a story. The
Mike Brown stuff. Again, that was a staggering firing off

(12:46):
of a loss, but that's a large part due to
a rotten owner. Vivek, I don't is it run a
Davitt No, I don't exactly know how to say his
last name, but bottom line, he has not been a
great owner. He's looked down upon in the league. Is
a bad owner and makes him Michael Malone, the Nuggets coach,

(13:07):
he fired him back in the day, and Malone took
a shot at him after Mike Brown was let go.
It's weird these NFL coaches. The window for success it
used to be, oh, you get three forty years, Not
so much anymore. Man, if you're trending poorly in year two,
you're probably gonna get fired early three year three. It's

(13:28):
just it's not that good at this point. I think
you have to consider the Bear's job better than the
Jets simply because they have Caleb Williams and the Jets
have nobody. But the guy to watch here is McCarthy
in Dallas, because I personally think Dallas is heading toward
irrelevance again. And if McCarthy wants to be spicy, he

(13:48):
would go take that Chicago Bears shop. He's an offensive guy. Now,
he did feud with Rogers at the end, it seems
like everything's copascetic or has been with Dak Prescott, so
no major issues there. But I like McCarthy. I would
say is the coach's name to watch, just simply because
you know, listen, I don't think he's a great coach.
I think he's a good coach. But it appears as

(14:11):
if it's not a lock that he stays in Dallas.
I don't see that as a lock for McCarthy. Let's
go real quick back to the playoff games. Because overnight
the Baltimore Ravens hit minus ten against Pittsburgh. I listened
yesterday's pod, we told you to get it. I know
some of y'all napping coming back slow. I've seen the

(14:32):
memes coming off of the holiday break. It takes a while. Listen,
if you at nine and a half teas down, you're
under a field goal. Now seven point teaser only gets
you to a field goal in the event that the
Steelers are able to make it close. This is a
rivalry game. Pittsburgh's not going to totally roll over. But
some of these numbers on the Ravens since the bye
four and oh straight up, four and oh against the spread,

(14:53):
every game won by double digits. They ran the Texans
out of their own stadium. They pulverized the Steelers. I mean,
these guys can put it on you fast and furious. Now,
I will remind you guys, this Zave Flowers injury is
worth monitoring. That offense does not win a ton on
the outside. And I will remind you guys. Lamar Jackson

(15:14):
has had a history in the postseason of not necessarily sucking,
but he has had his struggles. And you go back
and it's like every same thing every year. Lamar, is
you the MVP? Is you have best quarterback in football.
Maybe I don't know how's he done in the playoffs,
and that's where I land because he did not make

(15:34):
a difference in the Chiefs loss last year in the playoffs,
right two years. Then you got to go back to
twenty twenty, the last time he played the playoffs. Before that,
he had lost to He has in six career playoff games,
a two to four record. I know quarterback record doesn't
mean much. Six tds, six picks, fifty seven percent completions,

(15:56):
six games, not a huge sample size, but this is
the kicker. Zero fourth quarter comebacks, zero game winning drives.
And again I'm not hammering Lamar, these are just facts. Lamar,
and I've compared him. Is just one of those regular
season guys, like a James Harden I've done. I've said

(16:17):
that compares soon before. People hate it. Harden utterly dominant
regular season player. We know this, and he's had his
struggles in the playoffs. So that Steelers game, you know,
I don't know, man, I like Rave. It's been at ten.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
That is. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

Speaker 2 (16:44):
The other one to watch is Broncos Bill. So for
the longest time, I've compared the mac Jones Patriots team
to these Broncos, and I think the Broncos are gonna
get run out of Buffalo. However, I it would have
been more advantageous for the Bills to have this game
at night. Then you get the juiced up stadium, the

(17:06):
one o'clock eastern kickoff. That doesn't I don't think obviously
it's going to be a scene in Buffalo, but it's
not going to be like it is at night where
I mean that place. So do you remember the beatdown
of the mac Jones Patriots. I think it was forty
seven nothing at one point or ended forty seven to ten,
I think, But I was at a dinner. We were
at some restaurant in I think the in Orange County,

(17:30):
and I of course have to you know, listen, guys. Okay,
just a pro tip to dads and husbands out there.
We watched football for September, October, November, December, the whole time.
We start to pete around in December because you know,
you got family stuff. January comes around, it's like, all right, football.
It is only a handful of games left, so you're
really relishing it. But at this point your family's like,

(17:50):
can we get back your attention on weekends? So you
make sacrifices and we end up going to some restaurant.
But I've got to be seated with a view of
the TV, because like, come on, I could watch it
on my phone, but then I'm really checked out, and
I remember just keep looking with the score, and I'm like,
this is such an ass whipping. Oh this felt great
because I was on the bills that day and you

(18:11):
just keep looking up that you don't really have to
pay attention to the game. It's just such a beatdown.
And I don't know why this is only eight and
a half. Here's a number for you. Do you know
how Denver's done against teams with a winning record?

Speaker 1 (18:24):
It removing the.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Chiefs because they played like their JV players. Denver against
teams with the winning record the season one and seven
with a minus thirty seven point differential. When they step
up in class and face good teams, they historically have
gotten beat and occasionally they gotten beaten bad. Now there
are some numbers on quarterbacks making their first playoff start,

(18:47):
against quarterbacks with playoff experience Josh Allen. He has playoff experience.
In the last twenty two years, quarterbacks making their first
playoff start against quarterbacks with playoff experience are nineteen thirty
seven and one against the spread. That ain't good at all.
This applies to bo Nicks. Say I'm at Donald and

(19:09):
Jayden Daniels. Now it seems unlikely that all three of
those will not cover. I would say Jaden has the
best chance of a cover, but I also dug up
this one. Sean McDermott, defensive mastermind in Buffalo. Against rookie
quarterbacks in his career nine and four, only one rookie
quarterback has thrown for more than one passing touchdown versus

(19:31):
McDermott defense guys. Buffalo rested their guys. Meanwhile, Denver had
to play everybody so they could get in. I like
Buffalo here, I'm rocket with them. I'm fired up now.
The other game that I was all about was Rams Vikings.
I told you guys, I love the Rams, love the Rams.
That line is moving my way. It's down to Rams

(19:52):
plus one and a half. Remember this is Donald's first
career playoff start, so that nineteen thirty seven and one
again spread applies and Adam Turnoff, who will be on
this podcast in a couple of days to break down
the games. By the way, he is the guy who
called Panthers season win total over four and a half.

(20:12):
So I had to text him a shout out, bro, Wow,
what a sweat that must have been. Week eighteen overtime
Carolina wins and their win total goes over four and
a half. I mean, that's like the last possible moment
Week eighteen overtime. So but he has some interesting numbers
on when Donald needs like more than two and a

(20:35):
half seconds to throw, I e. When the defense confuses
him enough that he has to like actually process and
move around. And Donald's numbers have been horrific when he
has to hold onto the ball if it's a read
and react in Kevin O'Connell's system two to three step
drop justin Jefferson boom, Jordan Addison boom, Hawkinson boom. But

(20:57):
if you're disguising coverages and you're mixing zone and man
and you got him off balance and Darnold has to
read and process, he's not getting it done. And some
of the numbers churn off we'll talk about is another
major reason I like the Rams. Plus you get come up,
Matt Stafford, Pooka Cup all rested. I think they're gonna
be in really good shape, and Kyron Williams especially. I

(21:20):
will lastly close out with Chargers and Texans, and there's
gonna be new layers and stuff to them. Every day
is I hit up the Fox Stats team. Their research
team is great. I can ask them anything and it
goes into the articles I read for Fox sports dot Com.
But this Chargers game is fascinating. So you guys know,

(21:43):
the Chargers defensive coordinator is Jesse Minter, who's had some
really good moments this season. He got carved up badly
by Baker Mayfield late in the season, but otherwise Minter's
been excellent. Okay, did you know Jesse Minter was at
Michigan and you know who Michigan played when he was there,

(22:04):
school from Ohio called Ohio State. And did you know
Mintor didn't quite bodybag Stroud. And you couldn't on that
Ohio State team because they had Marvin Harrison and Abuka
the world wide receiver. But Mintor confused Stroud enough that
they picked him off twice. Stroud did throw for three

(22:25):
hundred and fifty yards. Now that Michigan event, you could
not run on them. So it was just Chuck and
Duck all day and Ohio State was playing from behind.
But Mintor has seen Stroud. He's very familiar with his work. Also,
Mintter is from the Baltimore Ravens tree, the Harbaugh tree.
Surely he's gonna look at what the Ravens did in
the playoffs last year to Stroud when he couldn't do anything.

(22:48):
And surely mint is aware of the what the Ravens
did in the thirty one to two ass whooping on
Christmas Day. Now any of us can see that. But
mint and his knowledge and relationships with the Ravens and
history with Stroud, I think this is a great spot
for the Chargers, guys, I really do. It's still at three.

(23:09):
I'm sure Texans money will show eventually, because, yeah, the
home team getting a field goal, you gotta take it.
There's gonna be old school guys who do that, and
I get it. But I've seen some of the EPA numbers,
and the Texans since Week ten or one of the
worst teams in the league offensively. Now, maybe the loss
of Stefan Diggs is bigger than we thought. Maybe the
loss of Tank Dell is bigger than we thought. But

(23:32):
good luck mixing running on the Chargers. So now you've
got Stroud dropping back, as long as Nico Collins doesn't
get loose that bad offensive line. I like Boson Matt.
I like the Chargers here. I know it's a lot
of favorites, but just so excited for the games. We'll
actually do college football as well, will have somebody on
to preview those games. I should point out this arctic

(23:54):
blast that's hitting the country except for California, I should
say southern California. It's gonna be seventy here today and
seventy tomorrow. There's some concern that the Cotton Bowl could
be impacted. That's Texas Ohio State on Friday at Jerry World.
You know, Texas, they can't handle any ice or snow

(24:15):
or inclement weather. They're just not ready for it. And yeah,
you have to wonder if that game's gonna go off
as expected, will they push it back a day. We'll
see this arctic blast that is gonna wreck the country.
It looks gross, So I'm not gonna rub in how
warm I am, but I'll remind you guys, I'm not
a huge fan of winter. Anyways, fun podcast, we're gonna
do NBA Maniana. I don't know if you guys have

(24:38):
followed the Jimmy Butler stuff, the Bradley Beal stuff in Phoenix,
a lot of fun NBA stories, So we'll get to
that tomorrow. Talk to you then,
