four NBA Playoffs. Get your home version of the game
on the way out the door. Hopefully we don't have
to hear any more cycle babble and long winded words, salad,
(00:43):
nonsensical postgame comments from Lebron. One can hope, but hey,
I'm not here to bachelor Lakers. They've actually had a
pretty good year, all right, won forty seven games. Lebron
played seventy one games. Anthony Davis played like seventy five
games after the All Star break, number three in the
NBA in offensive efficiency. But we kept hearing these speeches about, yeah,
(01:09):
I was a sweep last year, but man, it was close,
man almost Yeah, sure, good. Maybe you guys could rent
meet the Fokkers and watch that movie and get yourself
some medals for that. But again, I'm not here to
bash the Lakers. They'd won six straight road games heading
into Saturday nights tilt against Denver, and of course Denver
(01:31):
had beaten the Lakers eight in a row, so something
had to give. But the truth of the matter is
the more things change, the more they stay. This dame. Now,
the Lakers came out like a house of fire. You
could not have scripted a more ideal start against the
(01:54):
Denver Nuggets on Saturday if you were a Hollywood scriptwriter
and you were in the back for the Lakers. Lebron
James looked good early. Aaron Gordon, one of Denver's key defenders,
got into early foul trouble. D'Angelo Russell was making shots,
Anthony Davis was making shots. Lebron was making shots, made
(02:17):
his first three threes. Lakers were even up double digits
in the second quarter. I think it was forty nine
thirty seven, and then, just like just like every game
of last year's Western Conference Finals, oh no, we suck again.
It didn't matter, you know. The Nuggets they they'd struggled
(02:40):
a little bit early, you know, for them, but then
you know they figured it out and from that point,
after trailing forty nine to thirty seven, they rode the
Lakers like a stick horse. Ended up winning by eleven fourteen,
one o three, and the Nuggets looked every bit like
the championship squad that one. Denver's first championship in franchise
(03:03):
s hisstory last season, which is bad news for the
rest of the NBA. In my humble opinion, it's even
more bad news for the Lakers. It's the worst news
for the Lakers, who have now lost nine straight games
to Denver between the regular season and the playoffs. And
if they're scoring at home or believen, if you're just
(03:24):
by yourself. The last time the Lakers defeated Denver was
December sixteenth of twenty twenty two. December sixteenth of twenty
twenty two, once again, Nicole Jokic incredibly efficient, incredibly dominant,
just amazing thirty two points fifteen to twenty three, twelve rebounds,
(03:45):
seven assists, how many turnovers zero none, n a zelch Bupkus.
With Yoki shut on the floor, the Nuggets just look
like poetry in motion period. By the way, the entire
Nuggets squad, they only committed four turnovers in their entirety.
(04:09):
Now the Lakers, they showed up, looked like they had
a plan. The man with the plan. They played the
Nuggets backcourt, you know, probably much more aggressively than most
teams in the NBA are willing to or would take
the risk in doing. They tried the Lakers. They wasn't
(04:31):
a matter of effort. The Lakers tried very hard to
make Jamal Murray uncomfortable. They also make sure that the
Lakers were ready for Denver and transition. And the truth
of the matter is it translated into a lot of
misshots for the Nuggets, at least early on. But the
tide turned in the second quarter. The Lakers had their
(04:52):
largest lead of the game twelve points. Nuggets called time out.
They responded with a fourteen to two run to tie
the game, and then they really went to work in
the third quarter. By then, the Lakers were starting to
look a little exhausted, started to make some bad decisions.
There were multiple possessions that ended the way Denver drew
(05:13):
up in their playbook, such as an Anthony Davis three
point attempt took a while for the Lakers to get
their feetback under them. They tried to get the lead down,
they got up to single digits midway through the fourth quarter,
but it was like when big brother Russell's little brother,
he lets you win for a while, then he says,
all right, not up in here, notough of that, We're
(05:33):
gonna pin you. Lakers could not get any closer and
again run back the tape people. Just like last year
in the NBA Western Conference Finals, D'Angelo Russell, who's been
pretty good this year, ended up looking like a guy
that might not want to hope, you know, give a
(05:54):
lot of minutes to against the Nuggets. The Nuggets are
a team that are fully capable, fully equipped how to
exploit D'Angelo Russell when they're on offense, and the Nuggets
did a pretty darn good job of denying Angelo Russell
open shots on defense. By the way, Russell did finish
(06:15):
the night with thirteen points six to twenty, one of
nine from behind the york one of nine. I will
make a prediction that the Lakers in Game two will
have less minutes for D'Angelo Russell and more minutes for
Gave Vincent, who who's better defensively, That's my prediction. Now
(06:39):
cam'p be denied the Lakers. They played their butt off,
they did try, they went for it. Lebron James played
forty one minutes, Anthony Davis played forty four minutes. What
do they get for that? Well, I think Judge Schmils
said it best you get nothing, and like it. They
got to run into a tough, championship caliber, rested Nuggets
(07:03):
team that showed almost no rust after six game layoff,
and I don't know if it gets any better than
there for the Lakers. The Nuggets took their best punch
and it was close until it wasn't. The Lakers were
even up sixty to fifty seven at halftime thanks to
that Caitlin Clark tripple from Lebron James before the buzzle buzzer.
Excuse me, easy for me to say. And then the
(07:26):
Nuggets they do what the Nuggets do, twenty four run,
broke it open in the second half. All of a sudden,
they're up eighty nine to seventy eight heading into the
fourth quarter and Denver. You know, we'll talk about this
with Mark Medina at midnight. But their synergy, their connectivity,
their continuity their depth. My god, Denver's really good. This
(07:48):
just in, Yeah, Denver's really good. You got this five
man lineup right, Nikolay Okick, Jamal Murray, Contavious Calwell, Pope,
Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter. And the truth of the matter
is these guys all really You talk up the individually
outstanding players, but the hole is simply better than the
(08:09):
total of their parts. They just simply are. They play
at their own pace, their own tempo. They create their
own wide open looks, and they almost make it look
too easy at times. They really do yo kick fights.
He looks over in the corner and he sees Caldwell
Pope in the opposite corner. Aaron Gordon's already sliding in
front of Anthony Davis to screen him away. Yokuld catches
(08:29):
a pocket pass from Jamal Murray. Gordon is sliding baseline.
He's looking for another lob. When the Nuggets get into
their transition game, forget it. There's really no stopping him.
And by the way, let's not forget defensively, the Nuggets
truly turned up the heat in the second half, holding
the Lakers to a total of forty three points in
(08:51):
the second half of just going sixty in the first half.
As the game went along, the Lakers look more flustered
and Denver looked far more locked in. And at the
end of the second quarter, when they not get started,
they get back into it. You sensed that the second
half was going to be rough sledding for the Lakers.
(09:14):
Even Darvin Ham said it. He said, quote and he
dropped a swear word. He said, this is tough. Quote.
A championship team isn't going to beat itself. So the
second half you saw, you saw the full force of Denver.
You did, and it felt more apparent as a Lebron
(09:34):
James and Anthony Davis. Well, let's be honest, they carried
the freight. They got very little contributions from their supporting cast,
and I look for that, frankly, to continue. The truth
of the matter is, for two full years now, Denver
has sported a team that's just simply complete. Very few
teams are complete as Denver. I don't think any team
(09:56):
is as complete as Denver. Maybe you can talk about
the Boston celt but they haven't done anything yet, and
Denver has. The truth of the matter is tonight was
supposed to be a test supposed to be a test,
and Denver passed it in flying colors. Oh, by the way,
Denver's been passing every test for the last two years.
You know, maybe LA has some trick up at sleeve.
(10:20):
I don't know. Maybe Rujachmura can save the day, or
maybe the Lakers shooters can perform a miracle. But they're
going to have to show a lot more spark and
a lot more than they showed Saturday night. Am I
predicting to sleep a sweep? Not necessarily, But as I
said at the top, I'd like to thank the Lakers
for participating in the twenty twenty four NBA playoffs. Want

(12:33):
so who better to have on? Yes, it's that time,
it's the Physic five. The time, it's the Physic five.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
These are the five things you need to hear about.
Not with the only backed up back Hilton Super Contest
winner Steve Fessig.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Here's Bernie Fratto. Well, Faz, we're right in your wheelhouse.
The Circa posted over one hundred props this past Monday
for the NFL Draft. That was the most popular, seemingly
is the over under quarterback selected in the first round.
The total is four and a half. Let's start through.
You have thoughts on that, sure.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
Well, it's a disguised prop because it really comes down
to more than likely. Where Obviously the Washington quarterback Penix
is going to go because you got four slam dunk
quarterbacks soon ago and bone decks unlikely to go. So
Pennix is he going to go in the first round
or not. It's going to decide this wager. And that's
(13:33):
reflected by the fact that right now Certa has Pennix
thirty two and a half the under minus one eighty five,
so that means there's a more than half chance, much
more than half chance he'll go in the first round,
and in which case over four and a half, wee
indeed cash and I guess you got a little bit
of a free roll of Bonex goes. Personally, Bernie, I
(13:54):
think betting bone Next to not go in the first round,
even at like minus two twenty, I think I saw
is a good wager. I think we I'm not sure
that even a Penix is going to go in the
first round, but I'm pretty confident he's going to go
before Bonex.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Here's if you've really if you're feeling saucy, the Raiders
have the thirteenth pick. If you think they like Bonnicks,
you can get that at plus three seventy five. Do
you have any thoughts or is that too much of
a needle in a haystack?
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Bet I hate the needle in the haystack, bets. And
this is a classic example because there's just no way
that the Raiders would take him, you know, uh yeah,
I mean he's not supposed to go till number thirty seven,
So for him to be taken that early would just
be the Raiders would be lamb basted for stupidity to
do that. So they have to trade back to probably
(14:46):
the end of the first round and then take him.
So you're asking for an awful lot to happen for
one specific event to occur. Because of that, I would
try to avoid. You know, everyone's looking for the needle
in the haystack. Everyone wants to bet one hundred to
win three seventy five, And the truth is, more often
than not, it's the minus three seventy five bets, where
you lay three seventy five to make one hundred on
(15:06):
something that's almost almost certain to happen, that winds up
being the very best bets. Of course, the most extreme
example is that for a long time, I think it's
off the board. Now you know, Caleb Williams to go
number one, you could you risk fifty to win a dollar.
Now I know you have to type your money, so
that's no good, but that's I mean, as sure as
the sun's going to come up on Thursday, he's going to.
Speaker 7 (15:26):
Get selected number one.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Well, I think that numbers, now what I think minus
ten thousand, is it not. I mean, it's something ridiculous.
But to your point earlier, go ahead, you'll earn more.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
By just putting the money in the checking account, yes,
or just.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Light it on fire. It'll keep you warm long. On
the short of it is this, I want to just
quickly piggyback on a point you just made. All too
often betters want to bet a little to make a lot,
bet a little to make a little more if you
want to be profitable in this business. By the way,
real quickly, on the Raiders, one bet says. It actually
did catch my eye is that, as you know, Circa
(16:04):
and Station, they posted odds on positions. And what I
mean by that is, for instance, the Raiders, if you
believe their first pick will be an offensive lineman, that's
plus one point forty. That's live your thoughts. You know.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
I hate all these bets, and the reason being one
team who they're going to take, because the Raiders are
going to know who they're going to take. And that's
what makes the drafts so good. That if you've got
a mole in those organizations, Bernie, you have bles, you
have friends, and you know the whispers get out. They're
like Hey, you know, it's like the Bengals the year
a few years back there trying to decide should we
(16:39):
take the wide receiver or the the old lineman, and
then everyone knew they were going to take their wide receiver,
and the odds on him just just went crazy. Well,
you want to wait till you get that information. And
without that information, as Gordon get going, wall Street says,
the whole world out there is throwing darts. Buddy boy,
I don't throw darts and I don't gamble. I deal
in information.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
You got to go get me something didn't know we
had a meeting Today's Sport. I love it. Good stuff, Fez,
all right, speaking of moles, listen, I I'm going to
defend JJ McCarthy later in the show. As you know,
I covered you know, Michigan football for many years, and
I still got my finger on the pulse and talk
to people. There's a thing about him. Let me just
(17:22):
do this. Ever so quickly, Fez I realized he wasn't
asked to do a lot this year. He'd have to
put the team on his back and do all the
heavy lifting. So he's a limited highlight reel. He has
a limited you know stat you know, sheet as it were.
But in third down he completed, he got first downs
and fifty percent of his third downs when he passed
the ball, So he was a master a third down,
(17:43):
the money down, the fourth quarter in the red zone.
Where am I going with this? I think there is
a very good chance he's drafted in the top five.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
Your thoughts probably you had to say that it's a
very big good chance you could be drafted by the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
All no, zero, no, no, no hardballs, no, no, no, no.
He's got his guy, although there's some issues with his
finger surgery. That's justin Herbert. But no, listen, New England
is very interested in sales Minnesota. Things have to fall
into place. See that's the thing. And we'll get to that.
Fairs about trades, and I'm all over the map here,
I'm sorry. The question is does New England trade that
(18:20):
third pick for a haul or did they draft JJ
McCarthy Anyway, I think it's not up to minus one
eighty five that he goes under his draft position of
five and a half.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I see circa under five minus one five.
You know, he doesn't have a lot of slots to
go because I think it's pretty much a slam. Doug
Marvin Harrison's going to go in the top five. We're
gonna get the other three quarterbacks, you know, May and Daniels,
and so there's only one one slot left. But he's
the favorite to fall into that slot versus you know,
(18:50):
anybody else. Again, I would much prefer to identify something
that we get information on, something that is kind of
the consensus. I'll give you an example. So, like Brian
Thomas is the LC wide receiver who has medical issues
and he's falling out of favor, and his over under
was like sixteen and a half and now it's nineteen
(19:11):
and a half, for instance. But pretty much the word
is that boy, you're taking him at your own resk
you because the medical issues, well, guys like that tend
to rightly or wrongly, just keep moving in the same direction. Namely,
they keep being bearish the betters on those players and
betting against them, probably like the poster child. Remember when
Larry Tunsall with the gas mask and then he was
(19:33):
going to go three or four and then boom me
went way later, and so that narrative is out there
on Brian Thomas. So there's a guy. I would say
that I don't have to like micro manage how everyone's feeling,
how anyone team is feeling about him, because I already know.
I already know the consensus that people teams are wary
of him and betting him over which is I saw DraftKings.
(19:54):
He was at seventeen and a half over minus I
think one eighty. And that's that I would absolutely end.
Is Brian Thomas over all.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Right, let's spit ball a couple of these brock Bowers
his position under twelve and a half minus one twenty
five be shocked if the Jets don't take him at ten.
That seems like a solid play to me.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
You know, I've heard everything about, you know, the taking
the best player versus are you crazy? The Jets need
to bulk up the old line, you know the eye test.
Anyone who watched brock Power says that guy is god.
I mean, he's so good for Georgia, but his stats
weren't all that impressives. And I my guts just says
the push come to shove. What happened to the Jets
(20:33):
that train wrecker season? Well, the quarterback got hurt in
the very first game. You got to feel that they
would opt for the safe picking and take it an
old lineman and not take Bowers. But again, I don't
have any information. I hate betting with that information, all right.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
So here's another prop. Over six and a half defensive
linemen and edge rushers drafted in the first round. You
can get plus two forty. There's a lot of big
name edge rushers and defensive linemen in this draft. You
looked at that aspect, you know, I.
Speaker 6 (21:01):
Was thinking about betting over ten and a half defensive
players taken in the first round.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Oh yeah, think about think about it.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
Yes, if we get seven edge rushers, you know we're
probably going to be in great shape to get over
ten and a half overall defenders. Right, So I know
those two are you know, dovetail. But if I had
to bet, if I had to be bullish on defenders taken,
I think i'd go just the over ten.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
And a half.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Well, there's also a prop FEZ under twenty one and
a half minus one forty offensive players drafted in the
first round. Something.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Well, go ahead, Fazz, unless ray Guy becomes available as
a putter. I think I think we're probably safe. They're
like just shopping right and seeing which one we're going to,
which one we pay less? Vega on the ten and
a half or the twenty one and a half?
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yes, all right, final one, Fez. I think there's going
to be a ton of wide receivers drafted in the
first half. Do you like that? Over prop?
Speaker 6 (21:54):
You know, I've been looking much more at the individual
wide receivers than the number that are going indeed to
be selected. It does seem to me, doesn't seem Bernie that?
Like I know, offense is more important than defense, but
have we ever seen a draft where we saw twenty
two guys get selected on offense in the first round.
I gotta go under the twenty one and a half
on overall offensive guys.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, no, that's fair. Even though the rules are changed
and it's basketball on turf. You're right, teams are going
to draft on the Fez. Enjoy the draft week, my friend.
We'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
Thank you so much, Bernie. Keep doing a great job.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Thanks Fez. That's Steve Fezik, the only two times back
to back winner the Hilton now Westgate Super Contest. According
to Vegas. I'll give you some stats on what this
draft is looking like, but first let's go to a guy,
the man for all seasons, Martin Weiss with.
Speaker 8 (22:42):
The latest, Well, Bernie, the NBA playoffs started yesterday, and
let's go ahead and run through them real quick do
Orlando Magic Louse to the Cleveland Cavaliers at ninety seven
to eighty three. Donald Mitchell had thirty points, Pallo ban
Carol twenty four in the loss. Nicks beat the seventy
six Ers one eleven, one oh four, or the Big
Story year. Though Joellenbiid reaccravated his bad knee in the
(23:03):
third quarter. He had twenty nine for the game, only
two four eleven after his injury. From the floor, though
Jalen Brunton twenty two points on twenty six shots. Gotta
feel like the seventy six Ers lost one that they
they they can't feel good about that one after Jalen
Brunson having more shot attempts and points scored, he won't
play that poorly for the rest of the series. Timberwolves
handle the Suns one twenty to ninety five. Anthony Edwards
(23:25):
with eighteen third quarter points on the way to thirty
three for the game. And as you just illustrated and
laid out in your first segment, today the Nuggets. What'd
you say, Lakers, thanks for coming to the playoffs this year.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
I thought the Nuggets rode him leg a stick horse mark.
Speaker 8 (23:40):
They absolutely did one fourteen to one oh three the
final score. There three starters for Denver with double doubles
Nicol Jokis thirty two points, twelve rebounds, Jabal Murray twenty
two points, ten assists, Aaron Gordon twelve points and eleven rebounds.
Despite being in foul trouble NHL Playoffs, the Hurricanes beat.
Speaker 9 (23:58):
The Islanders three to one. Ruins beat the Maple Least
five too.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Won.
Speaker 8 (24:02):
Baseball had a full slate of games yesterday. Some of
the ones that were more notable. The Raids beat the
Yankees and ten innings, two to nothing to see the
Brewers on a thirteen to six to start the young
season so far, nine to two. On the road, they
beat the Cardinals twelve to five. Diamondbacks lose to the
Giants seven to three. Astro seven and fifteen start the
(24:24):
year so far not looking great there, they lose to
the Nationals in ten innings five to four. Dodgers are
on the verge of getting swept by the Mets, depends
on what happens today. But Mets beat them six to
four yesterday. And the White Sox, Bernie, the White Sox
are three and seventeen on the year, and we're no
hit for most of this game until the late innings stages.
Speaker 9 (24:45):
But Philly ends up winning that win nine to five.
Speaker 8 (24:49):
Let's see what else we got here? Oh, the Angels.
The Angels, of course they had a five. They had
a lead in this game.
Speaker 9 (24:54):
Blew that.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
The Reds win seven to five, and the Orioles beat
the Orioles beat the Royals. Say that five times fast, Bernie,
the Orioles and the Royals nine to seven, with Baltimore
being victorious.
Speaker 9 (25:07):
Bernie, back to you.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Martin, hang right there with me. Work with me. I'm
gonna ask you a question, but I'm taking this somewhere,
so just work with me. Okay, all right? If you
dumped Jalen Brunson into let's say a high school game
in Brooklyn, New York, how do you think he would do?
Speaker 8 (25:24):
I think he would have upwards of fifty five points
in a forty minute game.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
So I want to say about a young man. When
I was playing college baseball, I saw this kid play
and he was on the first ever McDonald's All American Team.
He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was
six foot six, but he reminded me of Jalen Brunson.
A lot kid by the name of Albert King.
Speaker 9 (25:45):
Prick Patrick Sweet has fed you this, no.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
Chance, No, but nobody fed me anything. Okay, dude, dude, Okay.
I love Steve Hartman. He's my dude, man, and I
know he's the king of trivia. But if he gets
into the ring with me, there's gonna be blood. We've
done a couple shows together. Okay. I saw Albert King.
I'm not making this up. I saw him now. He
went to Maryland, played for Leftyer to sell did okay
(26:09):
in college, not great okay, and then kind of bounced
around the NBA and never really did much, never did
but he was boy wonder on Sports Illustrated in nineteen
seventy seven. I was there for it. I'll take a
light of text test, okay. So I just want to
tell you, man, the long the short of it is
that not everybody can you know. And I saw Lebron
(26:31):
play in high school. I drove down from Detroit at
Saint Vincent Saint Mary's and I said to myself, dude,
and I'm not a Lebron fan at all, but I said, wow,
he's his body, his court sense, his guard skills, his size,
his unselfishness. He was the package. He translate. I said,
you could put this kid an NBA game right now.
We fockd that about Albert King and it just never
(26:54):
panned out. But he was the goods man. But that
was high school. That was high school. And I what
can you say? Talk? You know, I bet Doug Gottlieve
knows about him. People know about him. He He's more
than just Bernard King's brother. And Patrick Sweat straight my
man out. You didn't feed me anything, my man, by
the way, not I know, I know, Martin, Martin, Martin
(27:17):
dough probably just to throw away line one.
Speaker 9 (27:19):
Other thing, Martin, I was just talking.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
I know, we're just playing, man, We're just playing. We
still have a little fun on Saturday night. I gotta
ask you, o Martin being the being the Michigan man.
And you know, you know, my dear mother went to
the University of Michigan. I covered that program many many years.
The three men I admire most, the father's son and
Fielding Yost. What do you think, what do you think
of that weak ass tattoo or mackot? I have it
(27:45):
on good authority, Martin. You know that same guy that
stencils your address on the curb in front of your house,
he's the same guy that did that tattoo.
Speaker 8 (27:52):
I'll say this, he definitely checked the box, right. He
said he was gonna get a tattoo. He got a tattoo,
but his bloem looks a little understated. I'll say that
the block M is supposed to see the burn to
the point is at the block right, and this this
M is just you know, if you just went size
(28:12):
fourteen on Microsoft Word and pressed M after the shift M,
that would be the M that you're.
Speaker 9 (28:17):
Looking at on Jim harboss tattoo.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
What are we doing here? If you're gonna do it,
do it? The block him is one of the most
iconic logos in all of sport, The Amazing Blue you
know anyway.
Speaker 8 (28:31):
As far I mean, like I said, he checked the box,
but that's about all that he did.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
Well, he did it, he got the tattoo. I'm just saying,
I'm pretty sure the same guy that did the tattoo
will do your address on your curb and stencil it
in front of your house so when the pizza man comes,
he knows where to find.
Speaker 9 (28:48):
You did very much.
Speaker 8 (28:50):
It gave me, like, you know, when I was growing up,
he had to do projects for the science projects or whatever,
and it ended up being that Mom ended up doing
the whole thing.
Speaker 9 (28:58):
I felt like Mom kind of stenciled that block.
Speaker 10 (29:00):
You know.
Speaker 9 (29:01):
That's kind of how that's That was my take.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Yeah, it's entirely it's entirely possible. All right. A couple
of footnotes on the draft. If you look at the
Vegas odds, this really could be the first time six
quarterbacks go in the first round since that legendary nineteen
eighty three draft that featured John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly,
Tony Easton, Kenny O'Brien, and of course Dan Marino. Now
(29:25):
doubt it's gonna happen. I'm just saying it could happen.
I don't think Bodnicks is a first rounder, and I
think Michael Pennix is a first round talent, but you know,
I don't know if he's going to go in the
first round. I don't know the over under on qbs
in the first round four and a half minus one
to eighty five. No looking back. There were three first
(29:45):
round quarterbacks last year, only one in twenty twenty two.
Can you Pickett? Now? There were five in their initial
round on the twenty twenty one draft. Now, mel kiper
Junior actually thinks the wide receiver class is the bomb
for this year and as many it's six or seven
could go in the first round. You got the big four,
Marvin Harrison, Roma Doonza. But see I talked to an
(30:08):
NFL Scott Friday. He thinks Malik Neighbors is the best
most NFL ready receiver in this draft because there's incredible explosiveness.
And I don't know that he's wrong, but you know,
then you look at the next four. You got Exavier
Worthy who ran a four to two one forty yard dash,
which is a record, you know, but we'll see it's
(30:31):
the NFL birds can fly too. Doesn't mean they can
play football. But I do like this Worthy kid. But
it takes more than just speed. Ad Mitchell had the
great hands. Never drops a catchable ball, even balls that
aren't catchable. The truth of the matter is there's a
lot that goes into evaluating and scouting a wide receiver
and his ability to navigate the NFL deal with things
(30:54):
like press coverage, you know, find separation, find the gaps
and zones, and understand an NFL playbook. By the way,
just keep in mind, there's going to be an organization
that's going to be enamored with Xavier Worthy and they
should be just because of his speed. And I realize
Marvin Harrison is a flavor of the month and maybe
he should be pretty sure. He had a dad who
(31:16):
played in the NFL too, that didn't hurt him. So
if his name was Eddie Gazinski with the same skill set,
where we'll be talking about him the same way. Maybe
I don't know, it's going to be fun to watch
on Thursday night coming up. You know, people say what
they will about the NBA, but there are actually two
big reasons why the NBA has headed into this year's playoffs.
(31:38):
But believe it or not, and a tenance record to
gloat about. I'll share with you why, what, where and
how this happened. Just the facts, man. I'm Bernie fraddlewor

A right back at the Bernie Fattles Show. Fox Sports
Radio come to you live from the Tirec dot com
studios here in Las Vegas. Will take you up to
three am Pacific, six am Eastern. Just getting start at
top of the hour a little midnight, Mark Medina Medina
Magic Plenty to talk about today's quadruple header in the
NBA Playoffs. I know by the way, I think the
(32:31):
NBA is actually taking a well deserved bows they head
into the playoffs, which started for reels on Saturday. There
are two big reasons why the NBA has taken that bow,
because they've actually gotten a tennis record of legitimately glowed about.
The truth of the matter is the debut of the
n Season Tournament and the now evolution. They're in their
(32:52):
third year. The play in tournament actually I'm sorry it's
entering it's fifty year has had a dramatically positive effect
on the NBA. Now the total attendance for the twenty
three to twenty four season, which ended last Sunday. The
regular season was twenty two million, five hundred and thirty
eight thousand. That's about three hundred thousand more than the
(33:16):
season before, which had already broken the season long mark
that was set back in twenty eighteen. Why because the
months of November and March had record turnouts, largely buoyed
clearly by the group play in season tournament games. Now.
(33:38):
Jonathan Tillman, the executive vice president of Team Marketing and
Business Operations, was quoted last week saying, you usually see
a very strong start at the beginning of the schedule,
but then you'll have a lull in November and December
before picking back up as you head into the playoffs.
(34:00):
But the nd season tournament to carry that, and by
the way, as the season concluded, there were a lot
of what I called last week pen and race games
on the last couple of days of the season as
teams were spreading to the finish in both conferences because
heading into last weekend, believe it or not, you had
(34:21):
nineteen of the league's twenty playoff seeds up for grabs.
As late as heading into last weekend. You know, the
Boston Celtics were set, but you can figure out the rest.
So because of all the movement, it created tremendously more
interest in those games across the board, and I think
that was born out in attendance and even TV ratings.
(34:43):
So the truth of the matter is is bigger, better
is less? No more is more and better in the
NBA because if scheduling tweaks have been this successful. When
people sort of laughed at the play in tournament, I
remember one of the guys fired who came up with it. Well,
you've been a fixture in the plane the last three years, Lebron.
(35:05):
You might want to rethink that. And the n Season Tournament,
obviously the Lakers loved because they went all They went
all out to win the damn thing and they did.
So maybe he should the NBA even consider more expansion
in terms of tournaments, et cetera. Well, the truth of
the matter is, I don't know that that he's on
the drawing board anytime soon. They're going to continue to
(35:29):
monitor the n Season Tournament and they're going to, you know,
continue to evaluate the playing tournament, and then they'll they'll decide,
you know, if they need to make tweaks is perhaps
as soon as next season. We'll see whatever the case
may be. I think what you are seeing now is
an NBA that's feeling pretty saucy as they head into
(35:51):
their next TV contract. They're not going to remain stagnant.
After the first season of playing games. In twenty twenty,
the NBA doubled the number of participating teams all right,
and then after just one rendition of the n season
tournament this last November December, it's now already been rebranded
(36:11):
as the Emirates NBA Cup, and the format for next
seasons NBA Cup hasn't been released yet, but there is
thought there will be some potential changes. What those are
I don't know. And by the way, I should reference
a couple of the other NBA playoff games that were played.
(36:32):
The Knicks. Jason Smith's Knicks took Game one, and if
you're the Sixers, you actually, well, you might breathe a
sigh of relief. They avoid a disaster with the Jewel embiid.
I say this in quotes Injury Now. The Knicks took
Game one of the first round series. They beat the
Sixers one eleven, one oh four, Jalen Brunson. That's what
(36:54):
Jalen brunt has been doing. He led the way twenty
two points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. And give it
up to Josh Hart, give it up to og Nanobi.
They supplied the Daggers right. It was a game in
which Philadelphia, though as I said, most likely breathe a
sigh relief, MB had kind of an injury scare in
(37:15):
the second quarter. And you know what, this stuff's starting
above me I. The NBA is so much better when
everybody's healthy. If you're a Clipper fan, how can you
relax not knowing what the hell is going on with
Kawhi Leonard? Now, I always practicing, but if the knees
swelling up, and we'll talk to Mark Mediani about this,
this is not good. I mean last year the Clippers
(37:37):
had the Sun's beat, then what happens. He gets hurt,
Kawhi gets hurt, and they lose. Meanwhile, I honestly think
I think VJ and Husky said this, and I'm in
agreement with him. If if Zion doesn't go down the
last five minutes of that game, in the playing tournament game,
(37:58):
I don't know if the Lakers win that game they
might have it's an imponderable. We're never gonna know. But
they could not stop him. Period. He goes down with
a hamstring and after what was been a great season
and he looks great. He lost weight and he's in
shape and he's doing what he was supposed to do
and the Laker, I mean, they were a freight train
(38:19):
coming down and the Lakers could not stop him. Zion
leaves the game and the Lakers closed the deal. You
got Zion, you got Kawhi, and now he got Embiid.
He was laying on the floor and his eyes were
wide open. Trainers were evaluating his leg. He was eventually
helped off the floor out of the locker room and
they just called a lower body injury following a dunk.
(38:41):
But he immediately goes to the locker room. Fortunately, and
I mean fortunately, Embiid was back on the floor at
the start of the third quarter and they were down twelve.
But the dude can play man twenty nine points. He
didn't have a great shooting that, but he did have
twenty nine points, points, eight rebound, six assists, and you
(39:03):
know that he was effective because he got New York's
finest after a hard collision with Jalen Brunson. The chance
broke out at Madison Square Garden after Joel Embiid colliding
with Jalen Brunson fmb and you know what that word is.
I better not say it or I might cause a
profit for myself. Those were the chance at Madison Square Garden.
(39:26):
Stay classy out there, Fmbid after he collided with Jalen Brunson. Key.
Remember a left knee injury in particular is concerning for Embiid.
He missed more than two months of the regular season.
He had surgery on the same knee. He made his
return just April second, but he didn't play in the
Sixers final season game. Let's hope these players stay healthy.
(39:47):
The NBA playoffs is so much better when players are healthy.
And I'd love to see Ben Malders Clippers make a
run coming up, Mark Madeena Medina Magic Keep it locked.
It's the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Well that's right,
you heard the band Bernie fratttershow keeps rolling right along.

(40:28):
is plenty of action, there are plenty of storylines, and
you know it, it's that time every Saturday night at
midnight Pacific. Here on the West Coast, we bring you
Mark Medina, our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru. Mark four
games today for home winners, and I want to start
(40:50):
with I wasn't going to do this, but I'm going
to start with the Lakers Denver because it was a
tail of two games, and I have to believe it
was the Lakers' worst nightmare because they came out like
a house fire. And then after that, Denver said, okay,
you've had enough. Your thoughts on what your takeaways are
today's game.
Speaker 7 (41:07):
Yeah. My thoughts were that Lebron played really well, same
thing with Anthony Davis, but they need help with their
supporting cast. I mean, D'Angel Russell shot the ball almost
as poorly as he shot the ball last year against
Denver in the Western Conference Finals, and there was some
thought going in that this would be his bounce back
redemption series after playing so well recently and hitting so
(41:29):
many shots against New Orleans. And I think that's the
least that they can have a definitive third option because
the Nuggets, they're a well oiled machine. It might be competitive,
but historically they've reeled off runs in the fourth quarter,
especially in crunch time. In this time, it was a
third quarter. So it just feels like the Lakers have
(41:50):
to play on most nearly perfect basketball just to give
themselves any sliver chances of winning in this series.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Well said, Lebron played forty one minutes today, Anthony Davis
played forty four. And I'm glad you mentioned D'Angelo Russell
because I talked about that in the open. Denver is
making him look unplayable because they know how to exploit
him on offense and know how to deny him shots
on defense. D'Angelo Russell was only one of nine from
(42:18):
behind the ark. That's not good. I am predicting you're
going to see more Gabe Vincent in Game two. Am
I wrong?
Speaker 7 (42:25):
I don't think that you're wrong, but I think that
in fairness to D'Angelo, he did start the game off
well with attacking the rim, being aggressive. Even though he
was missing a lot of threes, I think that he
was still engaged in the game. But yeah, to your point,
it's the bottom line, the results business with professional sports,
and so I think that they want to give him
the benefit of doubt a little bit, But at some
(42:47):
point the Lakers are going to be about trying to
win games. So if D'Angel Russell doesn't bounce back in
Game two, you're going to see a lot more of
Gabe Vincent moving forward, because one of the reasons why
they got him in the first place was a felt, hey,
he is a great guy that knows how to defend,
he can pass the ball, he's not worried about shooting,
and they haven't been able to really benefit from that
(43:09):
all season because he's had a lot of injuries. But
no doubt he is a potential X factor because of
how important he checks all the other intangibles.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
Final thing on that game, once Stenver found their sea
legs after six days off, and I don't think they
showed any rust personally, the Lakers as the game went
on in the second half, to me, started to look
a little tired. They started to make some bad decisions.
They had several possessions that were really less than spectacular,
including one r Anthony Davis threw up a three point
(43:39):
attempt and that, to be was metaphorical that they got
to a point they just couldn't do what they wanted
to do anymore.
Speaker 7 (43:45):
Yeah, and it's really fascinating because the Lakers one of
the reasons why they wanted to win the playing game
instead of trying to be strategic to void Denver in
the first round, they knew the added benefit of getting rest.
And when he looked at the fact that, you know,
last season they were one of many reasons why they've
lost the Nuggets is that they're feeling fatigue. Gas Lebron
(44:06):
and ad weren't fully one hundred percent, and they showed
signs that they were freshed, but as the game wore
on and the men's piled up, he started seeing them
wear down. But I think moving forward, the Lakers really
have no choice buddling on them because it's crunch time,
it's the playoffs, this is what it's all about. But
I think at least to relieve their responsibility, there has
(44:28):
to be another player that steps up. I mean Austin
Reeves was serviceable. Same thing with early Atcha Mora. But
you need to have someone who's making a lot more
plays than Dangel Russell was able to make.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
Well, I couldn't. I couldn't agree more. So, let's have
a little word association fun here, because there are a
lot of players I think that are feeling pressure. Let's
start with Kevin Durant. He's thirty six years old. Minnesota
looked pretty good tonight, So let's have a little name
association fund who's under more pressure? Kevin Durant or Deem
Lillard wanted out of Portland got what he wanted. Who's
(45:02):
face more pressure?
Speaker 7 (45:04):
I would say Damian Lillard. I mean, Kevin Durant has
already won titles. I know that. You know a lot
of people diminished that because he was at the Golden
State Warriors. If I think he earned those titles, he
won finals MVP with Damian Lillard. You know, he wanted
to go to Milwaukee because he was tired of being
in that Hampshire Wheel experience in Portland where you know,
(45:24):
they're a good, dangerous team in the first round of
the playoffs and probably nothing else. And you know he
finally after pledging so much loyalty of Portland understandably won
to find a place that would give him the best
chance to win. Now, I think in fairness to Damian Loward,
he has played the right way. His chemistry Donisonstokumpo is
(45:44):
really good. The Bucks larger struggles is that they really
missed true holiday. But yeah, I will say this, Damian
Lillard didder more pressure because he hasn't wonted title.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
Is well said, all right, Kevin Durant, Or let's do
it two for here, Jalen Brown, who's played in five
conference finals and Jason Titten, who's played in four conference finals.
Both of them played in the twenty twenty two NBA Finals,
but both of them have the same number of championships
you and I have. So who's good into more pressure?
The Jason Jalen, Jason Twins or Kevin Durant.
Speaker 7 (46:18):
Yeah, the Celtics steel will have more pressure. They've you know,
tasted the NBA finals two years ago. They went through
a lot of lights of passage moments in the Eastern
Conference finals earlier in their career, and they couldn't solve
the riddle that is Lebron James when he was with Cleveland.
So they've had all those moments of knocking down the door.
Now is the time to bust the door open. That
(46:39):
being said, if they lose to the NBA Finals to
the Denver Nuggets, I'm not going to say it's a
failed season. The Nuggets are probably a better team, but
they got to get to the finals. From the Eastern Conference.
There is no team, barring series injury to the roster,
that can seriously threaten them in the East. So yeah,
they had a lot more pressure. I think the being
(47:00):
that we're going to gather here, if you're going to
continue to use Kevin Durant as yours, I think a
lot more stars in the NBA that face more pressure
than Katie. At this point, I'm only going to.
Speaker 1 (47:10):
Use one more, kad or Jalen Brunson, who's clearly an
All star in all NBA. Choice who's under more pressure,
Jalen Brunson or Kevin Durant.
Speaker 7 (47:19):
Wow, you stump me here. Actually I would say Kevin
Durant has more pressure because I think that Jalen Brunson.
I think with the knick Zeroms playing with house money once,
once it was clear that Julius Randall would be out
for the playoffs. I don't think that they had a
lot of expectations. Now that being said, the Knicks have
been started for championship success for quite a while. It
(47:40):
is a big market and they want to win. But
I think when you're looking at the expectations that the
Suns had with just putting so much salary that Matti
Spear was able to was willing to front in the
hopes of winning the title. With Durant, Devin Booker and
Bradley Beal, they face a lot more pressure because if
(48:01):
they don't win. I don't want to say that that
all of a sudden, that Big three is gone, but
there's gonna be other changes that they've already made. It's
hard to imagine what they are because they already made
a head coaching change. So yeah, interesting stuff all around. Therefore,
Kevin Durant's got more pressure.
Speaker 1 (48:17):
I'm in agreement and I'll tell you why. Look what
happens Saturday. Brunson had an un characteristically off night, but
Josh Hart, Douce McBride, Mitchell Robinson coming off the bench,
they all stepped up to provide support. Can that continue
the Knicks? If that can continue, I think the Knicks
are a serious contender.
Speaker 7 (48:36):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I think that they're a serious contender
to get to the Eastern Conference Finals and play competitively
against Boston. But again, barring any injury, the Celtics still
have a lot more separation. But I think when you're
looking at the Eastern Conference landscape, there are a lot
of teams on paper that seem to be better than
the mix the box, but we've talked about there inconsistent issues,
(48:57):
most notably on defense. The Sixers should be better, but
you know, they fell to the seventh seed because of
shoe O Embiide's injury, and we'll see to what extent
his injury scare in Game one. We'll catch up to
him later on in the series. You know, Cleveland, they're
a nice team, but don't I don't think I think
they're sailing second round. So, yeah, the Knicks can overachieve,
(49:18):
but it'll stop once they meet the Sellers.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Talk with Mark Medina or Fox Sports Radio NBA Guru.
You hear him with me every Saturday night at midnight
on the Bernie Frattle Show. Let's talk about the team
that faced Kevin Durant tonight. You know, Mark pride comes
before the fall. But Minnesota looked awfully good and Anthony
Edwards was beating his chest hitting three pointers. Kevin Durant
tried to get there was just a titch lake. The
(49:44):
Wolves again looked really good. Can they be this good?
Obviously they've got Denver in the West, but could they
get to the conference finals?
Speaker 7 (49:54):
I think so. I think they're the real deal. I
would give the extra Denver because of their continuity, but
I think it fairness of Minnesota. They're not a quote
unquote young team that doesn't know how to win. They
have some veterans with Rudy Golbert and Mike Connelly. They
have a lot of really great talent with Aunt and
Carl Anthony Towns. I think one of these things that
we've seen through this late season is that they really
(50:15):
learned to lean on their depths when Carl Anthony Towns
was out for injury. Now that he's back, they're even
the better team. But keep in mind when Anthony Edwards
had early fout trouble in the first half, I think
that that experience of learning how to play without kat
in bolding guys like nas Reed and Mike Conley and
Rudy Goldbert to really step up their game a little bit,
as well as Nickklee Alexander Walker. So then you know,
(50:38):
once Aunt came back in the second half, it was
his show. And I'm not saying this, I think that sometimes,
you know, people lean on these go to bates too much.
But I know, talking to Jade McDaniels earlier this season
before the playoffs, he was saying that Anthony Anthony Edwards
reminds him of Michael Jordan with just his mannerisms to
step back fataways, his competitive this and you know, I
(51:02):
wouldn't say there's a comparison per se, but he definitely
showed those kind of mannerisms in that second half with
a lot of great play and then backing up with
some nice trash talk against Kevin Durumt.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
I enjoyed the playoffs today and the thing that stuck
up to me with the Timber Bowls, I mean, you
got to be impressed with their size and their defense.
John Wooden once said there's a place in heaven for rebounders.
They outrebounded the Suns fifty two to twenty eight. This
is the NBA fifty two to twenty twelve mark I
mean again, you know, when you have that kind of performance,
(51:35):
you really got to pay attention.
Speaker 7 (51:37):
Wow, Here's here's what it comes down to. I think
that Minnesota's shown that this Rudy Gobert trade was actually
a good trade. I mean, it was lampoon last season
because of their chemistry issues. But Rudy Goberts getting sixteen
rebounds and he Edwards nine. You know, karl On and
Town's getting seven. They have a lot of good size
in the front corner when you're looking at the Suns,
(51:57):
I understand why they traded the under but also came
at a cost. Joseph Nurkic he's a great screener, passer teammate,
but he's not a good defender. He's not a good rebounder.
They really don't have any size. It really just depends
on Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker scoring offensively,
and that chemistry has been great. But they need a
lot more than that. And so I think that moving forward,
(52:20):
it seems likely that Minnesota is going to have a
field day on the glass. And the only way that
the Suns keep it competitive is in fact they can
get to track me with lean on their big three
to just make a bunch of baskets.
Speaker 1 (52:32):
Mark your referenced to Karl Anthony Towns in his health,
and I talked earlier about Joel Embiid, and I want
these players to be healthy. We're twelve hours away from
tip off and the Clippers will face Dallas and the
gentleman by the name of Kawhi Leonard hasn't played since
March thirty. First, are we going to see him on
the floor Sunday, Well.
Speaker 7 (52:53):
The Clippers have listened to him as questionable for Sunday
against the Mavericks. I would be very surprised if he
You know what, he has not done a full contact practice.
And you might think, well, it's the playoffs. What do
you mean he doesn't need to practice. Well, I think
Kawhi Leonard needs a practice because history has shown when
he hasn't had a proper ramp up, he gets hurt again.
(53:15):
I think the problem here is the Clippers this don't
have a lot of practice schedules. Now that the playoffs
are about to start. You know, they'll have Game two
on Tuesday, They'll have Game three on Friday, so maybe
that extra day will give him the practice. But this
is a gigantic red flag, and Bernie, you shouldn't be
surprised nowither should listeners. I was founding the alarm bells
(53:39):
last week to pay attention if he gets any practice time,
any contact, and we then have learned that the only
practice he got with some shooting drills, nothing else, and
the Clippers there being a little bit more forthcoming where
Lawrence Sprink was, you know, con seeing the fact that
his inflammation has been stubborn and unpredictable. Well, uh, there's
(54:00):
nothing structurally wrong with his knee, but you know, it
doesn't take an MD to be concerned because of his
previous injury history. So yeah, I would be surprised if
he plays tomorrow. And then we'll see if the Clippers
are actually going to be able to have a practice
on Monday so that he has a proper ramp up
to return to plug.
Speaker 1 (54:20):
I've been concerned. I told you about my my daughter's
situation with her knie and she played Division one soccer.
He doesn't swell up for no reason real quickly. I've
got to I've got to address this because I think
the Timberwolves are a great story. But Mark, can you
share with the folks, there's a legitimate ownership dispute going
on in Minnesota and can that you know, how might
that affect a team in the playoffs?
Speaker 7 (54:41):
Well, it's not ideal, but I think in the short term,
I don't think it really affects anything in the playoffs
because you know, the backstory is that Glenn Taylor was
going to sell his majority shares to Mark lore And
and Alex Rodriguez, and they felt Glenn Taylor felt like
(55:03):
they were late with, you know, making certain payments done
on time. Alex Rodriguez will tell you that they're ready
to and Mark Laura were law ready to make all
the payments do at the deadline. So there is some
heath that she said. But I think it's a concerning
point for future seasons. But I don't think it's going
to derail anything with this year's playoff team. This is
(55:26):
going to be settled through litigation. It's a lengthy process.
The playoffs are long, but it only takes two months.
So I don't think it's going to be a factor.
But I think moving forward in future seasons it could
be a factor because we'll see to what extent does
either party really care about, you know, putting a championship
team together as opposed to worrying about luxury tax applications.
(55:47):
But as far as this year's playoff is concerned, the
Wolves fans can just enjoy Anthony Edwards, Carl Anthony Towns,
Rudy Gobert, and the rest of their talented cast, and
there's a lot of them, Nasried, Mike Conley, Jane McDaniels.
It's been a pretty fun team to watch, absolutely all right.
Speaker 1 (56:06):
Last one for me, Mark, Last Saturday, at this time,
you correctly predicted that the Lakers would in fact be
playing today, they would make the playoffs and survive the
playing round, which they did. Infected. Before Saturday night, the
Lakers had won six straight road games, but Denver had
beaten the Lakers eight and Uarrosa something had to give
Saturday night. So Game two is Monday in Denver, Game
(56:29):
three is Thursday in Los Angeles. Game four Saturday in
Los Angeles. When we are talking to you in this
spot next Saturday night, would the Lakers still be in
the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (56:39):
That's a very good question. I don't know how each
game is going to play out because it's so unpredictable,
but I think that this series goes to six games
in favor of the Nuggets. So yes, I do think
that by the time we're talking next Saturday, we'll have
just finished Game four in LA. I don't know who's
(57:00):
winning Game two, three, or four. All I think all
I know and can anticipate that the Nuggets will win
in six in some way, shape or form.
Speaker 1 (57:10):
Mark, great stuff as always, look forward to having you
next Saturday night as well.
Speaker 7 (57:14):
I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 1 (57:16):
It's Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night and Bernie
Frattle Show at twelve midnight. He's our Fox Sports Radio
NBA guru. All right, we turned our attention, as we should,
to the NFL Draft. There's a lot to unpack, but
I want to start with this. Did the New England
(57:36):
Patriots perhaps drop a hint about who their team's draft
preference might be. I'll share with you what we heard.
I'm Bernie Fraddlewick Company Life from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio,
tirect dot com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, back at the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports
Radio Comedy Live from the Tarach dot Com studios here
(57:58):
in Las Vegas. The draft is Thursday. Will all be watching,
you know you will, And the team drafting third overall
happens to be the New England Patriots. Did their GM
drop a hint about who they might draft, Well, let's
unpack this for a second. The Pats, in theory have
(58:18):
a chance to land a potential franchise quarterback with the
third overall pick. But they're playing games. They're talking about,
maybe we'll move back in the draft, they'll still get
who we want. Maybe we'll look for a haul, We'll
trade that number three pick. Overall, the Pats are quote
open for business in the first round, in any round.
Yeah great, we haven't heard we've heard that before, right,
(58:41):
all that pablom in fifty cents that gets you a
cup of coffee at Carls Junior. I don't even know
if they still coffee there. Elliott Wolf there, you know
he In terms of Elliot Wolf's the GM I'm talking about,
He's the one that set are open for business. We
got a lot of holes to fill. But maybe we
trade down. The more picks we have we're better off.
(59:01):
Or we can keep the number three pick and not
draft the quarterback. Okay, that pretty much covers all of it.
You didn't really say. You said a lot without saying anything. However,
he did say that they would need to be blown
away to trade that third overall pick. There have been
discussions about, you know, trading that pick, but he admitted
no team has offered quote the proverbial bag for that
(59:24):
number three pick. Now. Following this press conference this past week,
a gentleman by the name of Ben Vollen the Boston
Globe said his biggest takeaway is that the Pats are
genuinely hoping for a big offer for the number three pick.
But if they keep the number three pick, they're content
on using it on a quarterback. Now, No, it's not
(59:45):
going to be Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams appears to be
a lot to go first overall to the Chicago Bears.
Very little consensus though, on how the rest of the
quarterbacks in the draft are ranked. Now, there could be
as many as five others taken in the first round.
Do I think that'll happen? No? Would they take a
look at a Michael Penock Pinnix, I don't know. I
(01:00:07):
don't think so. Would they need a significant offer for
a team the steps for for a quarterback, probably, But
the rumor that's leaking out of New England, and we
will not know if it's true until next Thursday, is
that the Pants are actually eyeing one specific quarterback at
(01:00:27):
number three, and he happens to have attended the University
of Michigan. Now, those reports could also be subterfuge that's
leaked by the Infra street strategic purposes. And again, like
I said, we're not going to know until the first
round is underway next Thursday. But if the Newland Patriots
(01:00:49):
actually do draft JJ McCarthy number three overall, what are
they getting. I'm going to tell you what they're getting
because the truth of the matter is, when greatness was needed,
when high leverage situations demanded, a great play needed to
be made, JJ McCarthy made it. The numbers don't lie
(01:01:13):
when it mattered most. Bill Walsh once said, don't tell
me when you're talking about a quarterback. Don't tell me
what he can't do, tell me what he can do. Well,
I will tell you what JJ McCarthy can do and
what he has done coming up. But first go back
to our guy, the man for all seasons, Martin Weiss
(01:01:34):
with the latest.
Speaker 9 (01:01:36):
Well, Bernie.
Speaker 8 (01:01:37):
The playoffs in both the NHL and the NBA got
off to start today.
Speaker 9 (01:01:40):
Let's go ahead. Start with the NBA.
Speaker 8 (01:01:42):
The Cavaliers beat the Magic ninety seven to eighty three.
Donovan Mitchell was a high man for Cleveland with thirty points.
Paolo ban Carrol twenty four. Franz Wagner also had eighteen,
seven rebounds and three blocks. But mag you're going to
have to score more than eighty three points if they
want to win the game. In this series. The Knicks
beat the seventy six ers, one of them in one
oh four. Jalen Brunston had twenty two points on twenty
(01:02:03):
six shots, so the Knicks weren't terribly efficient offensively. Josh
Hart with twenty two points thirteen rebounds. But everybody in
Philly holding their breath right now is Joel Embiid reaggravated
that bad knee in the third quarter.
Speaker 9 (01:02:14):
He was only two four eleven after his injury.
Speaker 8 (01:02:18):
The Phoenix Suns beat the Timberwolves pretty handily in the
regular season, but in the postseason none of that matters.
So the Timberwolves handled the Suns one twenty to ninety five.
Anthony Edwards with a huge third quarter eighteen points on
the way to thirty three for the game. And the
Nuggets had beaten the Lakers eight times the last eight
times they played well.
Speaker 9 (01:02:36):
Last night makes it nine. They won one fourteen to
one to Ozho three.
Speaker 8 (01:02:40):
Lebron had seven turnovers to go along with twenty seven
points and eight assists in the loss. Three starters with
double doubles for Denver Nicoli Jokis with thirty two and
twelve rebounds, Lamal Murray twenty two and ten assists, Aaron
Gordon with twelve points and eleven rebounds. In the NFL,
the Hurricanes beat the Islanders three to one. The Bruins
beat the Maple Leafs five, I've to one. Later today
(01:03:01):
in the NHL playoffs, you have the Lightning versus Panthers,
the Capitals and the Rangers, the Avalanche and the Jets,
and the Predators play the Canucks. In the NBA, the
Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat played the Dallas Mavericks
and La Clippers. Get started. Like we just heard from
Mark Medina, still waiting to see if Kawhi Leonard will play.
I'm gonna go ahead and bet no, seeing as he
has not had contact in practice yet, and Bernie, you
(01:03:24):
know what, in the NBA playoffs, contacts not optional. Indiana
Pacers and the Milwaukee Bucks also probably not going to
see Giannis until Game three or four of that series,
and the New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder, I
mean Bernie. The story of the playoffs so far as
you illustrated earlier injuries, there's a.
Speaker 9 (01:03:45):
Ton of them.
Speaker 8 (01:03:45):
Zion Williamson out already for this one and not looking
like we'll see him maybe in this whole series with
his hamstring injury that he suffered in the last couple
minutes of the play in game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The first playing games obviously beat the Sacramento Kings and
the second one to go ahead and get that eighth seed.
Speaker 9 (01:04:04):
But Barney back to you.
Speaker 1 (01:04:06):
Yeah, you're spot on, Martin. I don't think you'll see
him for a couple weeks, and you won't see Jimmy
Butler for a couple weeks. So it's a bummer. When
you start adding up the names. It diminishes the luster
of the NBA Playoffs. What if the New England Patriots
actually do take JJ McCarthy third overall what are they
getting now? We all know that JJ McCarthy was not
(01:04:30):
asked to do a lot in Michigan's offense. He was
not asked to carry the whole team, carry the whole load,
do the heavy lifting. He doesn't have a huge highlight reel,
he doesn't have a big time stat sheet. As a
matter of fact, this is what bothers a lot of people. Now.
We all know that on the field, McCarthy was underfeedy
last year and he's twenty seven and one as a starter.
(01:04:51):
That's not nothing. Complear career completion percentage of sixty eight percent,
But in all those games, only through for sixty two
hundred yards, et cetera, et cetera. Okay, I'll give you
all the numbers. Here's what I think spooped people about
JJ McCarthy. There was almost a month from November eleventh
to December second, in which McCarthy only threw one touchdown
(01:05:13):
pass and one interception total for almost a month during
that stretch. In those four games against Penn State, he
threw for sixty yards, through for one hundred and forty
one yards against Maryland, through for one hundred and forty
eight yards against Ohio, State through for one hundred and
forty seven yards against Iowa. But here's a big but, Pewey.
(01:05:34):
The Wolverines won all those games, So no one wondered
why McCarthy didn't do more, because they were doing enough
to win. Now, for my money, when you look at
a quarterback, I typically look at three things. How do
they do on third down? That's the money down, they
don't pay it a punt. How do they do on
(01:05:55):
third down? Well, McCarthy converted on third down. Anytime Michigan
was facing a third down and they ran a pass play,
McCarthy converted that third down forty percent of the time.
The only quarterback in this draft that exceeded that, and
(01:06:16):
it was only by two percentage points, no, two tenths
of a percentage point, was Jayden Daniels. McCarthy outperformed Bonix,
who checked in at forty three percent, Caleb Williams at
forty two percent, Drake Mayett thirty nine percent, and Michael
Pennock at thirty seven percent, All good numbers if you're
talking about converting third downs. However, McCarthy was at forty
(01:06:40):
nine percent. McCarthy was always cessationial in the fourth quarter
as well and in the red zone. So the truth
of the matter, though, is if you draft JJ McCarthy,
teams are going to be weary because they are stepping
into the unknown because they haven't had to see a
lot on film. And that's just the way Jim Harbaugh operates.
(01:07:01):
You'll see it next year with the next season with
the Los Angeles Chargers, He's going to take a lot
of pressure off of Justin Herbert. So as a result,
even though McCarthy was twenty seven and one, he had
considerably fewer passing attempts. He only had seven hundred and
thirteen passing attempts in his entire Michigan career. Compare that
(01:07:23):
with Caleb Williams, who was about eleven hundred, Drake May
was just under one thousand, Jade Daniels was almost fifteen hundred,
Bo Nicks two thousand, Michael Pennix seventeen hundred. So what
happens you evaluate this and you say, well, I've got
less evidence that JJ McCarthy can consistently threaten defenses downfield. Now,
(01:07:45):
McCarthy didn't run the forty at the NFL Combine, but
I'm told he's a solid four to four at his
time in Michigan, so he is a dual threat to
throw the ball and find daylight with his legs. He
was rarely sacked. He picked up yards on designed runs
a lot, and he also kept plays alive with his feet.
(01:08:07):
I thought it was accurate, but he did run a
six point eight second three cone drill and that was tremendous.
That impressed people. One thing that should not be questioned
about JJ McCarthy is his toughness. He regularly hung in
the pocket while pressure was bearing down on him still
through strikes downfield, despite getting hammered and dealing with incoming contact.
(01:08:32):
You can go back and watch the film. McCarthy waits,
waits in the pocket, lets the play develop, puts the
ball right on the money, and then he's hit. Now,
sometimes his decision making with pressure bearing down was not
always the greatest, but that can come with experience. Okay,
he perhaps has to learn when to give up on
a play and throw it away rather than taking a sack.
(01:08:53):
I get that. But McCarthy's footwork is better than people realize,
and he was always in position to throw. I was
maneuvered around the pocket in a way that for me
was way above average. Now, Jim Harbaugh has been, you know,
singing his praises, and why wouldn't he He won him
a national championship. And from what I saw, McCarthy's not
(01:09:18):
afraid to throw the ball over the middle of the field.
He's not afraid to carve up the middle of the field.
He's not afraid the target receivers at a higher rate
in those high traffic areas compared to other quarterbacks. And
he was very accurate. And I realized that some people
feel that Jim Harbaugh's lack of reliance on JJ McCarthy
(01:09:39):
was concerning, but they won. I remember I was part
of the Lions pre and post broadcast team from ninety
eight to eight. Now, I remember in two thousand and
six we do draft shows every year. Everybody was gaga
about this dude out of Vanderbilt named Jay Cutler. He
could throw a football a long you know, he could
throw a football like a gul Rico for crying out loud,
(01:09:59):
Uncle Rico, our man, you know, Napoleon Dynamite. So where
am I going with this? He had a canon army,
could throw the ball through a brick wall. But I
looked at his record and said, wait a minute, he
didn't win anything at Vanderbilt. Okay, I guess it, Vanderbilt,
I get it. But you know what, show me the
list of guys who couldn't win games in college, but
all of a sudden they show up at the NFL
(01:10:19):
and start winning games. That Couler had an okay career. Okay,
I don't think anybody is, you know, putting Jay Cutler
on their mountin Rushmore. Even though he could throw a
football about nine thousand yards. Well, he didn't win games,
did he. Well, McCarthy won games. He won games. To me,
that truly matters. And McCarthy does have better arm strength
(01:10:44):
than people realize. And part of the reason that McCarthy
has such good arm strength is that he's very agile.
His lower base is very agile, his lower half is
very balanced. He can rip it, He rips his throws.
He just didn't. He wasn't asked to do a lot.
I think he's gonna surprise people. So what do the
scouts really say about McCarthy's accuracy and his pocket presence,
(01:11:07):
and his decision making and his playmaking and his toughness.
I'm gonna share coming up, because if he's drafted high again,
back to Bill Walsh. Don't tell me what a quarterback
can do, tell me what he can do. I'm gonna
tell you what JJJ McCarthy can do. And this is
not just coming from me, It's coming from the scouts.
By the way, I want to remind everybody be sure
(01:11:28):
to catch Fox Sports Radio's Draft Night live throughout the
first round of the Draft this Thursday, beginning at eight
pm Eastern, presented by Express Pros, the official employment agency

pick by pick predictions and reactions to every first round
pick that's Thursday at eight pm Eastern, throughout the entire
first round of the live right here on Fox Sports
Radio in the iHeartRadio app presented by Express Pros. We
continue with JJ McCarthy what you need to know because
(01:12:11):
you're gonna watch Thursday night and wherever he's drafted, you're
gonna have your opinions. And I bet you didn't see
him that much, so you're gonna be relying on what
other people said. I'm Bernie frattlewre comany live from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tirack dot com studios. Don't
go away. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on
Fox Sports Radio. How right back on the Bernie Frattle Show,
Fox Sports Radio coming to you live from the tiraq
(01:12:34):
dot com studios here in Las Vegas. Will take you
up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern. A lot
of stuff to get to as we continue with JJ
McCarthy to the team that selects him, what will you
be getting? Well, what do the stats say? A lot
of statisticians have pulled accuracy percentage, average depth of target,
(01:13:00):
big time throw rate, turnover worthy play rate, run grade.
These are from sophisticated organizations like Pro Football Focus, etc.
EPA per play which means expected points added, and they
took things from College Football Data dot Com. From the
top sixteen quarterbacks of the twenty twenty four NFL Draft,
(01:13:23):
These are sixteen quarterbacks that have been evaluated. You look
at the draft class and you standardize, you average them.
Believe it or not. JJ mccarthury rank third out of
all sixteen quarterbacks, only behind Jade Daniels and Drake May.
When you combine those six metrics into one standardized average.
Mcarthury rank second inaccuracy rate I told you now, he
(01:13:46):
was eleventh, and average depth of target. That's just because
Michigan's offense was a horse and buggy offense. That's just
what they do. Thanks to mister Edford checking in and
I appreciate that. But he was eighth and big time
throw rate, eighth, lowest in turnover worthy play rate, fifth
and run grade, and fourth in EPA play He was productive,
(01:14:08):
very productive. And Michael Pennix was fourth, Caleb Williams was sixth,
bow Knicks was eighth, JJ McCarthy was second. These numbers
don't really lie. Now. McCarthy ranked eighth as Pro Football
Focuses deep passing grade this season. He was twenty five
(01:14:31):
or forty six for seven hundred and six yards with
ten touchdowns in one interception on targets of twenty plus yards.
I think that's impressive. Seventy three percent under pressure passing
grade ranked fifth out of one hundred and twenty three
fully qualified FBS quarterbacks. He was only below bow Knicks
(01:14:53):
on this situation. Obviously, in Oregon, they ran a much
more dynamic offense in terms of there's you know their scheme. Now,
JJ McCarthy's pressure to sack rate was sixteen percent, That
seventh lowest among the top sixteen quarterbacks and better than
(01:15:14):
Drake May, Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams. Means he gets
the ball out of his hands, which means he's keeping
his eyes downfield. Now. JJ McCarthy's clean pocket passing grade
ranked twenty sixth, below Williams, Daniels Penix Nicks. In May,
his average two point eight second time getting rid of
the pocket did rank. Let me go back and see
(01:15:37):
that again in English. He got the ball out of
his hands in two point eight seconds when he was
in the pocket. That ranked the highest in college football.
That tells me a lot. Now, of the sixteen quarterbacks
pulled for the standardized study, Okay, believe it or not,
Jade and Daniels ranked fourth slowest, only behind Williams Daniels.
(01:16:00):
Now McCarthy's average time to throw was two point six seconds,
which was tied for fourth slowest among sixteen quarterbacks. However,
when he was about to be sacked again, these numbers
start to jumble your brand. So I'm gonna get off
the numbers here's the bottom line. What's the verdict on
JJ McCarthy. Scouts They like his arm strength, they like
(01:16:22):
his mobility, they like his leadership, they're like his toughness,
they like his ability to throw on the move. Now
I get it, no one can know what the brain
is gonna argue that J. J. McCarthy possesses Caleb Williams
or Jayden Daniel's elite playmaking ability or athleticism he doesn't,
or maybe Drake May's overall build, or he doesn't maybe
(01:16:43):
have elite NFL arm talent. But one of the things
NFL teams value are intangibles, and McCarthy has enough tools
to be considered mouldible in the NFL, and his intangibles
are through the roof. And his age is a major advantage.
He's only twenty one years old over say older prospects
like Jaden Daniels. All right, there's a lot of projection
(01:17:05):
involved with McCarthy. Truly winds up being drafted in the
top five, it will only add to the pressure. They're
going to scrutinize him even more so. But when you
look at again, the key things his accuracy. He's accurate
on all three levels. He has plus accuracy when he's
in rhythm. That's what Scotts are saying. His pocket presence, well,
(01:17:28):
he's poised. He's got a legit pocket presence now and
then he'll hitch. He will have a situation where he
has to escape and extend to play. And for the
most part of his decision makings is, you know, pretty good.
I think his decision making has been pretty good. He's
been scouted as a very good decision maker. And he's
(01:17:51):
efficient because it was a run heavy offense, so he
had to play with you know, within the framework of
his offense. But another key thing, and you know this,
this very much matters. Just ask Mac Jones, Just ask
Zach Wilson, just ask you know, justin fields, toughness. Toughness
(01:18:12):
is key. JJ McCarthy's toughness is used as a positive
by multiple scouts, who also noted he has a little
bit of a smaller stature. He measured six two hundred
nineteen pounds, but he was actually listed at just under
two hundred and two pounds in college. So you add
all that up and when scouts call him a very
good leader and he'll get to a bigger frame. His
(01:18:35):
playmaking ability his athleticism were actually praised by scouts. He's
a really good athlete. He can scramble, he can throw
on the move, he's accurate, he makes good decisions, and
he's tough. Mostly he won games twenty seven and one.
You can't take that away from JJ McCarthy. What are
you getting? I think you're getting a lot coming up.
Let's look at the other big name quarterbacks. Keep it locked.
(01:18:59):
You're listening to the Bernie fred Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well,
that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Frattle Show

Draft is Thursday night. You were all going to be watching.
You know you are special coverage here on Fox Sports
Radio as well, and the talk of the draft is quarterbacks,
quarterbacks and more quarterbacks in the name that keeps popping
up recently, and not everybody is down with it because
(01:19:42):
they just didn't see Michigan football to the way that
certain people did with a more discerning eye. Martin, I
know you were as invested in Michigan football as anybody
before I got to get to some of these other
quarterbacks that the scouts are talking about. You heard me
go through a good twenty minute dissertation on on JJ McCarthy. There,
(01:20:04):
what are your thoughts on JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 9 (01:20:06):
Uh, it's hard for me to see where.
Speaker 8 (01:20:09):
I kind of feel like he's reaching a level of
hype that has surpassed where his play showed me last year.
I know he wasn't asked to do much, but I
found myself Bernie, especially in the College Football Playoff, yelling
at the TV.
Speaker 9 (01:20:24):
Run the ball more.
Speaker 8 (01:20:26):
Like I and I just wanted them to take the
ball out of his hands and put it into the
arms of Blake Korum and Donovan Edwards.
Speaker 9 (01:20:32):
H As far as his his.
Speaker 8 (01:20:34):
His tenure as a pro, I do think he's calm
under pressure, but uh, every so often, like if Caleb
Downs had a size shoe, Let's say he wears a ten.
If you wore an eight, that would have been an
interception on the first drive of the College of the role.
Speaker 1 (01:20:47):
Remember that.
Speaker 8 (01:20:47):
Yeah, yeah, I think things would have been an entirely
it would have been an entirely different story.
Speaker 9 (01:20:52):
Now it wasn't, So it wasn't.
Speaker 8 (01:20:54):
And you hear the same thing about Kevin Durant shoe
in the Eastern Conference semifinals or whatever that was against Milwaukee.
Speaker 9 (01:20:59):
You know, if he.
Speaker 8 (01:21:00):
Had his size twelve in is out of his eyes fourteen,
that would have advanced.
Speaker 9 (01:21:03):
But they didn't. So it doesn't matter.
Speaker 8 (01:21:05):
But as far as projecting him out to him being
drafted as high as it seems like he's going to go,
is just something I never I never saw when I
was watching Michigan football, And as you know, I watched
all of what twenty eight of those starts.
Speaker 1 (01:21:20):
Hop out the trick play though, when they threw the
ball and he threw it back to him and the
throw was high, he had to pull it down with
one hand and turn it like a double play, like
a second baseman. He has a knack for making those plays.
And you're not wrong. And I also noticed that he
had that tennessee the old Matt stafford, roll right, roll right,
roll right, throw it into a seat of hands. He's
(01:21:41):
going to have to lose that he's not a finished product,
but I got a feeling he might be better than
people think. Now, do you think one last question, do
you think he goes in the top five or when
reality hits on Thursday night, that's just simply not gonna happen.
Speaker 8 (01:21:56):
I will say no, I do not think he goes
in the t five. If he does, it'll be because
somebody trades up into those spots because they're worried that
someone else is going to take him, Like Minnesota my
package eleven and twenty three to go ahead and try
to jump up ahead of another quarterback hungry team who
could trade into five, six or seven.
Speaker 9 (01:22:14):
I think that would be the reality.
Speaker 8 (01:22:16):
But if the draft, if the draft remains as it
stands right now, one through ten, I think JJ McCarthy
goes out of the top ten.
Speaker 1 (01:22:24):
Okay, good answer, fair enough. It's going to be interesting
to watch. I think there's probably a seventy percent chance
what you describe happens. We'll see. I think there's there
is a chance, say at least a thirty percent chance
that he you know, he he ends up sneaking his
way into you know, fourth. I could see that happening.
(01:22:46):
You know, Scotts have talked about whether or not the
JJ pipe is real. I think it is. I know
many personnel executives like JJ McCarthy over Drake May. They
believe he's very talent. He is, you know, play processing
and tangibles matter, okay. And the truth of the matter is,
(01:23:08):
I think when when you look at his production and
when he was asked to do what he was asked
to do, when he was asked to do it, it
was in canny that he was able to convert those
plays at such a high level. Fifty six percent of
McCarthy's pass attempts in twenty twenty three resulted in a
(01:23:29):
first down or a touchdown that ranks number one overall
in FBS. Is it not presumed that if he was
asked to do more, he could have done more. And
the truth of the matters, you just got to search
high and low because he is the highlight reels not
there didn't He just doesn't have the attempts and the
you know, the playmaking sensation that the other quarterbacks did
(01:23:52):
because of the other offenses they ran. But everybody's agreement
is an agreement that McCarthy is a winner and he
has all the tangibles, even though you know, and by
the way, I don't think anybody disagrees that McCarthy's better
than a Zach Wilson or a Trey Lance or some
of the other guys that I moved up. But what
does Scotts say about the other big time, big name quarterbacks,
(01:24:13):
because this matters. Well, First of all, you have to
start with Caleb Williams. Okay, Caleb Williams. I think at
this point it'd be a shock if he doesn't go
number one overall to the Bears. And yes, he's he's
drawn the comparisons to Patrick Maholmes. Remember Patrick Mahomes got
the city hear and when he got done with his
(01:24:35):
year after you know, tutoring under Alex Smith, he was
in Andy Reid's system, which didn't hurt. But Mahomes has
been everything as you know advertised. Williams has apparently a
really high floor okay that even if he's bad, he
can be good. But we don't really know really what
(01:24:56):
his potential upside is in the NFL. Would say that
the truth of the matter is everybody has high hopes
for him because he's clearly the best looking quarterback prospect
wise in years just sheer talent, but some unnamed Scounce
said he is not sure about his leadership, not sure,
(01:25:21):
but in terms of talent, not even close. He's never one.
Chris Sims weighed in and said he can make every
throw in the book. He's the best scrambler in the
draft and the best off platform, which matters in this NFL.
When you get him off script, he is pretty darn good.
But I think Caleb Williams also has a great feel
in the pocket and when there's nothing there, well and
(01:25:43):
you have to get off platform, there's nobody better than
Caleb Williams from what I've seen in terms of film
in this draft. Now, Jaden Daniels is also a guy
who is drawing a lot of attention. Okay, he's considered
to have a thin frame. He's tad thing. He's six
foot four, but the only ways two ten and if
(01:26:04):
you watched some LSU football, Jaden Daniels has a penchant
for getting involved in traffic and getting involved in collisions
and high speed collisions. And he you know, that might
not be good in the NFL, but if he goes
second overall, I believe he'll be his offensive coordinator would
be Cliff Kingsbury, and Cliff Kingsbury knows what it looks
(01:26:27):
like to run an uptepo offense and put Jade and
Daniels in position to make plays. One un named scout
said Daniels is so good. He's so much better than
May and McCarthy. It's not even close. Daniels can play
NFL football right now, and he said that back during
the season. Another scout said Jaden probably made more progress
(01:26:48):
than any quarterback coming out in the last five or
six years. He can anticipate, make all the throws and
is an explosive athlete. Yep, definitely. He said. He's not
quite Lamar Jackson or Michael Vick, but his ability to
process pre snap has really improved, and that's hard to
do in one year. So those that's pretty high praise.
(01:27:08):
Even though people feel Jadan Daniels has room to grow,
it's going to take a couple of years. The offense
has to be tailored to him. He might make some
good plays, he might make some ugly plays, but he's
a guy who could step into the league and start
Week one. That's the belief that Jade and Daniels could
start Week one On the other hand, other scouts aren't
as sure. You don't know, he could end up being
(01:27:31):
the best one, great athlete, great arm, talent, he can process.
And then the thought among scouts just in terms of sheer,
athletic ability and talent is after Caleb Williams and after
Jade Daniels is that there's a big drop off. Fair enough,
next up Drake May. Now, if you just had to
(01:27:54):
sit and throw the football and you rank Drake May
against all the other six passers, Drake May would be
perhaps the leader according to a lot of scouts. Okay,
he's a prototypical six four two twenty three, but he's
got amazing deep passing strength and he's got the type
of deep throw with feel he can make like a
(01:28:15):
Terry Bradshaw type. Good enough mobility, good enough competitiveness. He
was acc Player of the Year as a first time starter.
And the truth of the matter is he was in
a difficult situation Drake May in North Carolina. They lost
their offensive coordinator and his passing statistics dropped his second
year against some higher infos. But people think he has
(01:28:36):
a pretty high ceiling, got room to grow. But he
does have a pretty high ceiling, and they think he's
got the makings, he's made of the right stuff to
play football in the National Football League. I think Drake
May will come under the most scrutiny. People are going
to pick him apart, just because Chris Simms even said it.
If you watch twenty throws, you'll see good throws, and
(01:28:57):
all of a sudden, they'll be all over the place,
and his decision making can be all over the place,
and his pocket presence is all over the place. And
some scouts think he has some serious mechanical flaws and
how he throws the football. But he's got the size,
he's got the athleticism, he's got the arm strength. People
compare him to Justin Herbert or maybe a Josh Allen,
but other scouts say that's ridiculous. They don't believe that.
(01:29:20):
It's amazing how multiple people can put the pair of
eyes on the same quarterback over and over and look
at it differently. You know, we've already talked about JJ McCarthy.
Ad nauseum, Let's get to Michael Pennix because I like
Michael PENNOCKX. He's twenty five years old, which means nothing
to me. He's not forty five years old. He's twenty
five years old. So people that talk about his age
(01:29:40):
go go kick rocks. Come on, you be stupid. It's
unlikely Michael Pennix, though, is going to be drafted in
the top ten. Based on what people are telling me.
There are some people think Michael Pennix can actually fall
out of the first round. Why. Some have freaked out
by his injury history before the past two seasons. But
(01:30:01):
when you look at Michael Penix as a quarterback, his
pocket presence, his arm talent, other people think he can
go in the top fifteen. Other people, anonymous coaches have
said they think Penix right now is certainly better than Drake,
may certainly better than JJ McCarthy when you are juxtaposing
what he can do in an NFL scheme, because Penix
(01:30:24):
hand really read defenses and he can really through accurately.
He's very quick, He's got a really strong arm, and
apparently in person his arm looks ridiculously strong. And the
thought is, wherever Penix ends up, he's more of a
sure thing to really stick in the NFL. The truth
of the matter is, though no one knows where he's
going to go. Other Scotts think Bo Nick is better
(01:30:45):
than Michael Penix. They think Michael Penix is serviceable, but
he's got a plan schedule. He's not a really if
there's one thing if you noticed about Michael Penis, he
gets traffic in his face. He doesn't have the kind
of footwork some of the other guys we have mentioned
does move him off of his spot. He can sometimes
be inconsistent, which gets us to the six quarterback bow Knicks.
(01:31:07):
And again, there is a theory that as many as
six quarterbacks could be drafted in the first round this year,
first time since nineteen eighty three when you saw John Elway,
Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Easton, Kenny O'Brien, and Dan
Marino all go in that same draft. Do we think
there is going to be six quarterbacks drafted? No, no,
(01:31:29):
But it's not all the realm of possibility. But if
you're looking at that guy who would go at the
very end of the first round or maybe within the
first ten picks of the second round, could be Pennix,
it could be Bo Nicks. Interestingly enough, both of them
were five year starters in college. And you know the
(01:31:49):
old Bill Parcells like to have his quarterback coming out
of college with a next x number of starts. I
think he said at least forty starts or twenty eight
starts or whatever. It was. Sixty percent passing percentage when
eighty percent of your games. Nix is also probably underrated
as a scrambler. And remember he started out at Auburn,
and he set the FBS record for single season completion
(01:32:12):
percentage after leaving Auburn at seventy eight percent just this
last year. Now, people might not see he's a first
round talent because he can play a little loose and
his fundamentals aren't always pristine, But there are other people
who feel that. Aside from Jayden and Daniels, why I said,
one scout said could start in the NFL. Other scouts
(01:32:35):
say they think bow Knicks will be a better pro
quicker than all the other quarterbacks because he's just good
enough at just about everything. Okay, and it's not just
hitting wide open receivers on easy throws. It's other things
he can do just good enough across the board that
(01:32:58):
make him a complete NFL quarterback coming up. This may
be a little premature, but Dion Sanders has already come
out and said he will not let his son Shodoor
play for certain NFL teams, which then Dion roundly debunked. Recently,
(01:33:20):
so what is it, yes or no? Dion actually called
it a ball face, lie. I will share with you
that little tugal war because it's Dion Man. We love Dion.
I'm Bernie fraddlewer comany live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports
Radio Tirack dot Com studios. Keep it locked right here.
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Oh,
we're back on the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio.
(01:33:41):
Come to live from the tyrack dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. Don't forget about thirty seven minutes from
now the Dance Sensation sweep of the nation to a
m Pacific five am Eastern. What kind of brand new
fool you followed by what my name? Well, we haven't
even got into the twenty twenty four draft yet, and
(01:34:01):
people already talking about the twenty twenty five draft because
a gentleman about the name of Dion Sanders says he
would not let his son should Door play for certain
NFL teams. And by the way she do, it's pretty good.
You can be a first round draft choice. He'd be
one of the first players selected in the twenty twenty
five draft. But it sounds like scenario where if we
hear it is right, then it's accurate. You might strongly
(01:34:23):
discourage certain teams from picking him. Apparently. In a recent
appearance of a podcast called The Million Dollars Worth of Game,
Dion said that his son's future. When asked where he
envisions Shaduur and actually his fellow teammates star Travis Hunter,
would be selected in next year draft, Dion did say
(01:34:46):
he believes both will go in the top four picks,
with one being taken first overall. Okay, however, Dion may
not want his son to go number one, depending on
which team holds the pit. Quote. Now, this is subjective
because I know, well, I kind of want them to go.
And let's not forget Dion's others than Shiloh. But I
(01:35:08):
do know where I want them to go. So there's
certain critics, there's certain cities. It ain't gonna happen. It's
gonna be an Eli And if you recall back in
two thousand and four, Eli Manning said Chargers don't draft me,
and they didn't. They didn't, they didn't want to, or whatever.
It end up in the New York Giants. Okay, that's
what happened. The rest is history, Dion, As I mentioned,
(01:35:31):
he's referring to what happened to Eli Manning. Manning made
it clear he did not want to play for the
San Diego Chargers because of concerns about the organization. So
his agent worked out and they facilitated the trade of
the New York Giants. Diana is saying he would do
the same if a team he does not approve of
is in position to draft Shador. Now, apparently there have
(01:35:52):
been multiple times depending on who you listen to, where
Dion indicated he has a major preference about where Shador
ends up. Remarks allegedly show he's very serious about it.
By the way, Schudor had a really good season last
year Colorado. He had over thirty three hundred passing yards,
twenty seven touchdowns only through three picks the entire year.
(01:36:15):
Also he ran for four touchdowns. He can play, He
can play, and I would not rule out that he
is the number one pick in twenty twenty five, but
we're a long way from that. But here's the big
Bud Pewee, Dion Sanders says, hold up, hold up, slower role,
step off. I need to set the record straight. So
(01:36:35):
Dion went back on the record this week pushed back
on the idea that he has a list of teams
for a son and Hunter to play for. He denied
it now again. Sanders, Shudoor Sanders Travis Hunter both studs
at Colorado High draft picks expected to be in twenty
twenty five. Dion Shan Sanders took umbrage and shot in
(01:37:00):
the comments that he would only allow with Sun, Shador
and Hunter to play for six NFL teams. In a
recent interview with CBS News Colorado, here's Deans quote. One
thing about a lie. A lie is so fast it
cannot run the truth any day. Sanders said, that's a
bald faced lie. That's a stupid lie. I have more
than six owners that are friends. I have more than
(01:37:22):
six gms that are friends. You've got to understand. I
played fourteen pro seasons and I worked another seventeen. I
believe in the NFL, NFL Network and CBS. I know
a lot of people come on well. Per The New
York Post, Sanders allegedly had six NFL teams that he
wanted Shador and Hunted to play for. Those teams were
(01:37:42):
the San Francisco forty nine Ers, the Dallas Cowboys, Watching
the Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, and Atlanta Falcons. Those are the
five teams Dion played for in his career, and he
had a very good career. The sixth team, apparently, he
was the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanders said the Eagles would be
a good fit for his son and Hunter, which Dion
(01:38:05):
later reiterated regarding the teams he played for in his
career as well. So the Eagles are a bit of
a surprise. They have a quarterback, Jalen Hurts, and I
don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon. That might not
be a good situation for should or Sanders to step into.
He'd be sitting behind Jalen Hurts, I believe. But Sanders
quoted Hurts in the past, which also could lead to
(01:38:25):
his desired interest in the Eagles for his son and Hunter.
Who knows Philly also has aj Brown and DeVante Smith
at wide receiver, and Hunter could probably play defense here
if he commits the other side of the ball. Sanders
did play both ways during his career. Dion he even
caught thirty six passes for four hundred and seventy five
yards and a touchdown when the Cowboys were thin at
wide receiver back in the mid nineties. That you didn't
(01:38:46):
know that, did you. By the way, Sanders has a
platform on teams in cole Weather Cities doesn't like him,
but Philly, Baltimore, and Washington they play in cole Weather Cities.
He appeared to change his stance on that. He also
said Sanders that both his son and Hunter could be
selected anywhere from one through four, meeting number one through
(01:39:08):
number four. Now the forty nine Ers and Ravens, they're
among NFL elite teams. The Cowboys are typically a team
that have a good regular season and you know, you
know what they do in the postseason. But all that
means is if those two players are going to be
drafted that high, none of those teams may have a
shot at them. They wouldn't be drafting that high. But
(01:39:30):
Dion been over backwards to say I would never do that.
I would never limit you know, or or if I
was that stupid, I wouldn't disclose the teams I want
him to play for. I would disclose the several that
I wouldn't whatever. Yeah, exactly make of this what you will.
The New York Post said one thing, Dion said another,
and anyway it slices it. I love it when Deon's
(01:39:53):
in the news. I do. I mean, I like Dion.
I'm a Dion fan. Is he perfect?
Speaker 11 (01:39:58):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:39:58):
But man, I like the guy a lot. Coming up, Reality,
Reality is about to sit in next Thursday, because we
have to be honest when it comes to the NFL Draft,
Our first round quarterbacks really worth the gamble. These facts
don't lie. They will cause you to shake your they
(01:40:21):
will cause you to scratch your head. I'll share them
coming up, But first let's go back to our guy,
the man for all seasons, Martin Weiss with the latest.
Speaker 8 (01:40:29):
So Bernie, you know you just said that, you know,
Dion's listing all these places where his kids could go,
and Philadelphia has already got a quarterback, right, yes, sir, Well,
Travis Hunter has a dad.
Speaker 9 (01:40:41):
I just feel like that's under reported.
Speaker 8 (01:40:44):
I feel like people should know that Travis Hunter is
actually Travis Hunter Junior, meaning that somewhere out there there's
a Travis Hunter Senior who apparently was a baller at
Boyton BEA's Community High School. I went on to playing
a Florida Football Alliance in the Southern States Football League,
winning the latter's Offensive Rookie of the Year award in
two thousand and seven. That's his per Travis Hunter's Wikipedia page.
(01:41:06):
But I just found it fascinating that he is dictating
where Travis Hunter may go and that's just not his son.
Speaker 1 (01:41:12):
This is not it is not Martin.
Speaker 7 (01:41:14):
I like it.
Speaker 9 (01:41:15):
Yeah, no problems.
Speaker 1 (01:41:15):
So that's what you call critical thinking skills, my friend.
Speaker 9 (01:41:18):
Hey, you know what that that that University of Michigan
degree putting in a work right now?
Speaker 1 (01:41:22):
Listen, man, I'm just trying to keep up. I'm no
high school dropout. I went to full six years.
Speaker 9 (01:41:27):
Yeah, all right, let's get to the business.
Speaker 8 (01:41:29):
The NFL and the I'm sorry, not the NFL, That's
what you were about to talk about next. The NHL
and the NBA. They had game ones all across the
board yesterday. The Hurricanes beat the Islanders three to one.
Bruins pounded the makeple Leae five to one. The Cleveland
Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic ninety seven to eighty three.
Donovan Mitchell with thirty Palo Macarro with twenty four. Nicks
(01:41:50):
beat the seventy six ers one eleven and oneh four.
Joel Embiid had twenty nine points, but was scary it
had a scary sight in the third quarter. He threw
the ball off the backboard dunk that came down immediately
was on the ground writhing in pain.
Speaker 9 (01:42:03):
Bernie I was listening to the Knicks radio broadcast on
my way into work.
Speaker 8 (01:42:07):
That's how long I've been here, and you would have
thought it was a funeral for Joellenbiid. He did come
back in the game after injuring re injuring that knee,
but was only two four eleven after that injury. Jalen
Brunton twenty six shots, twenty two points. You have to
imagine he'll be more efficient going forward. Timberwolves handled the
Suns one twenty to ninety five. Anthony Edwards with thirty
(01:42:28):
three KD thirty one and the loss. The Nuggets beat
the Lakers one oh four to one oh three. Three
starters with double doubles for Denver. That's Nicola Yokus, Jamal
Murray and Aaron Gordon. Lebron had twenty seven points, eight assists,
seven turnovers, tomorrow, I mean today, looking ahead, the Lightning
will play the Panthers, the Capitals play the Rangers, Avalanche,
and the Jets and the Predators and the Canucks on
(01:42:51):
for all those game ones in the NHL. And also
we're looking at the Boston Celtics in Miami Heat, the
Clippers and the Mavericks.
Speaker 9 (01:42:58):
No Kawhi Leonard right now.
Speaker 8 (01:43:00):
He's questionable but has not participated in contact drills and practice,
and like we said earlier, contact not optional. In the
NBA Playoffs, no Yiannis either for the Milwaukee Bucks as
they take on the Indiana Pacers. And finally z Ion
Williamson also out with the hamstring injury suffered in the
play in tournament. The New Orleans Pelicans will play the
(01:43:22):
Oklahoma City Thunder Bernie. I don't know if you heard this,
but Larry Nance was doing some pregame media availability.
Speaker 9 (01:43:29):
He said he would bet on the Pelicans, but then
I heard that sound. Look yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:43:36):
He started to get up, sat back down and said,
just to be clear, I'm not actually betting on the Pelicans.
Don't have a betting app on my phone or anywhere
around here, and ended his availability with no.
Speaker 9 (01:43:48):
Johntay Porter. So there you go, Bernie, back to you
good stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:43:52):
Martin covered a lot of good ground there, my man.
Uh and boy, we would deep on Johntay Porter Friday night.
That what a crazy, crazy, crazy situation. All right. There's
always a debate this time every year, every year as
to the belief that the next great NFL quarterback is
(01:44:12):
staring you in the face. You know, do I have
to do it? Trey Lance, Malik Willis, Ryan Leaf, go back,
reread the narrative. Sorry, And you know, after even myself
sometimes participating in heated debates and taking part in a
few comments myself, a few years ago, I started to
(01:44:33):
do some research and my digging led me all the
way back to nineteen sixty seven. And here's why, Because
since then there have been one hundred and nine first
round quarterback picks. And it left it leaves you with
(01:44:54):
only one conclusion. For every John Elway or Dan Marino
or Peyton Manning or Patrick Mahomes, there are six guys
who won't live up to the expectations. For every Patrick
Mahomes or Josh Allenders, Zach Wilson or Jameis Winston. Just
a fact. Now, let me first explain because it all
(01:45:14):
comes down to expectations. Everything in life is that way.
It all comes down to perspective. Right, two twin brothers.
One is worth a million dollars, one is worth fifty grand.
The brother worth fifty million, or the brother worth one
(01:45:35):
million loses one hundred grand in the stock market. He's
worth nine hundred thousand dollars. He's livid, he's upset, he
can't sleep. The brother who's worth fifty thousand dollars in
his net worth makes ten grand in the stock market.
Now he's worth sixty thousand. He's ecstatic, he can't sleep.
(01:45:56):
The brother who's worth nine hundred grand is upset. The
brother who's worth sixty grand is ecstatic. It's all about
expectations and perspective. So see, here's the deal. When the
team uses their first round pick in the draft to
select a quarterback, there are serious expectations. You are basically saying,
(01:46:19):
we want this to be the future of our franchise.
You do not expect this person to turn the team
around in the first two games, although that would be nice,
But this draft pick is expected to eventually become the
team leader, the face of the franchise, the man that
leads them to the Super Bowl. Oh yeah, we are.
(01:46:41):
A quarterback selected the first round of the NFL Draft
will face more scrutiny than any other pick in any
other sport period. When the team wins, well you hoist
the guy on your shoulders, paging Patrick Mahomes because it
was their command and leadership that got them there. Facts
when they lose, they're going to be thrown under the
(01:47:03):
bus by the media. They'll be flushed down the toilet.
They'll receive one hundred percent of the blame for the
problems of their team. Because the truth of the matter is,
every can't miss quarterback prospect well they think they can
handle the pressure, but few have genuinely proven they can
honestly do so. Of the one hundred and nine quarterbacks
drafted in the first round in the last sixty years,
(01:47:26):
check that fifty five years. You know how many who
have been selected to the Hall of Fame. Nine Those
aren't great percentages. And of the one hundred and nine
quarterbacks selected, twenty six have played on a team that
went to the Super Bowl. But of those twenty five players,
they held a record of twenty nine and sixty in
Super Bowl since nineteen sixty seven. Now this numbers a
(01:47:49):
little skewed because of my research. It turns out, well,
Matt Lionert was in a Super Bowl, but he sat
on the bench. He's playing for Arizona, and Byron Leftwich
was on the Super Bow, but he also sat on
a bench for Pittsburgh as they won it. By the way,
Arizona lost. Hall of Fame quarterbacks actually hold a record
of eleven and nine of the Super Bowl and potential
(01:48:11):
Hall of famers, well, they got a little bit better record.
But the truth of the matter is when you analyze it,
there's only and the number escapes meet right now. But
I want to say there were only like nine quarterbacks
(01:48:33):
who got to the Super Bowl with the team that
drafted them. Now that, by the way, don't get me wrong.
By the way, what happened to the other who you
know quarterbacks? Well, a lot of them had averaged good
careers and the book is still out on some of them,
all right, and some are pollege coming out of college.
You know, they they led their teams to more wins
(01:48:53):
they got in the first round, but didn't translate to
the NFL. But here's the reality. You do a complete
analysis of all the wins and losses and all the
first round quarterbacks. Compare them to the records of people
who are drafted in rounds later, and the numbers aren't promising.
Those one hundred nine quarterbacks nine minute to the Hall
(01:49:16):
of Fame, five are potential Hall of Famers, twenty six
got to the Super Bowl, twelve or All Pro. So
there's some success by first round quarterbacks. Just look at
the last couple of years. Justin Fields, Mac Jones, Zach Wilson,
Trey Lance, and Trevor Lawrence has had some success. But
even still his numbers are great and he's under five hundred.
(01:49:37):
And I'm not picking on Trevor Lawrence because I like
Trevor Lawrence. So my suggestion, my suggestion, buyer, beware the
fate of your franchise. If you're drafting a first round
quarterback has a much higher percentage of ending up like
a Jeff Georgia or O'Ryan Leaf than a Peyton Manning
or Troy Aikman or a Patrick Maholmes. Those are just
(01:49:59):
facts only going back to nineteen sixty seven. I'm not
wishing it on him, but whether it's Michael Pennix or
Jayden Daniels or JJ McCarthy or Bo Nicks or Caleb Williams. Well,
history tells us more of them are gonna fail than succeed.
(01:50:20):
One guy, though, who I There is one GM that
I pay attention to every year in the NFL Draft,
because not only has this guy pulled miracles, his personal
story how he ended up as an NFL GM will
blow you away. I got to share this with you.
You will get a real kick out of it. Tech
(01:50:42):
hard people, if you are chasing your dream in life,
I'm gonna share with you this guy's story and you
will know that. Hope Spring's eternal as it does Thursday night,
as you will be sure to catch Fox Sports Radio
and their Draft Night throughout the first round of the
NFL Draft this Thursday, beginning at eight pm Eastern, presented
(01:51:03):

(01:51:24):
throughout the entire first round of the Draft right here

Express Pros. You're gonna want to hear this story about
a current NFL GM that you've heard of. You're gonna
love it. I'm Bernie Frattle for Company live from Las Vegas,
Fox Sports Radio tire Ac dot Com Studios. Don't go away,
you're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:51:47):
How We're back at the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports
Radio Company live from the tirerac dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. So the Draft is Thursday night and
there'll be storylines galore, players, quarterbacks, you name it, teams,
fans taking place in Detroit. They'll do a great job
hosting it. And one of the things I watched that
(01:52:10):
has been somewhat under the radar, but it's really not
under the radar because I'm going to tell you the
story of a gentleman who is a prominent GM in
the NFL and he has done a phenomenal job in
building his team. So let me get to the story.
(01:52:31):
You know, his name is Howard and back when he
was a kid nicool light at dawn. He it'd wake
up every morning, and he was dreaming for working in
the NFL. He was completely obsessed. So as he entered
his senior year in high school in nineteen ninety three,
he decided he would write a letter to every single
NFL team, and they were all the same. And this
(01:52:55):
is verbatim what he wrote. You're not going to believe this.
My name is Howard. I have never played football. I've
never coached. I've never been a water boy or a
ball boy. In fact, I've never even stepped on a
football field. But I know, if given the chance, I
would make a great general manager for an NFL team.
(01:53:18):
Exclamation point. Okay, that's real now. The other part he
didn't know is Howard kept sending that same letter over
and over and over. In fact, it's been acknowledged and
recorded that Howard kept sending and writing that same letter
for three years. All in all, he sent out one
(01:53:41):
and sixty five letters to NFL teams, over and over
and over. Finally, Mike Tannenbaum, who had just taken an
executive position with the New York Chant, says, all right,
I'm curious. He called Howard and his reasoning was, well,
I figured this kid, he's a he's either the most
(01:54:02):
persistent man in America or he's the craziest. But I'm
going to find out. So Mike Tannebaum called up the
young man and told him, on knowing certain terms, my man,
no NFL team is ever going to hire you as
a coach. They're never going to hire you as an assistant.
You're never going to get anywhere near the field at
any on field capacity. But if you are that hell
(01:54:25):
bent on working in the NFL, I think he should
go to law school. Why because if you've got a
law degree, you potentially could be a candidate for this
burgeoning new responsibility that we now call salary cap analysis.
Remember this was the nineties. Well what did young Howard do?
(01:54:48):
He enrolled at Fordham Law School. He finished in three years,
and after he graduated, he re embarked on his quest
to get into the NFL. Somehow, some way, he kept
getting rejected, but finally one door opened. It was nothing
(01:55:09):
more than a non paid internship. Ironically, it wasn't from
Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum actually turned him down because he said,
I'm sorry, I just don't have an opening for you.
But what Tannerbob did do was placed a phone call
to Joe Banner, a senior vice president with the Philadelphia Eagles,
(01:55:31):
to recommend the kid. Said, Joe, I think I'm going
to recommend this kid to you. Check him out. Banner
checked him out. Joe Banner says, I'm really impressed with
Howard's tenacity and his skill set. Said I'll even pay
you two hundred and fifty dollars a week today. Okay,
(01:55:52):
Philadelphia Eagle.
Speaker 10 (01:55:53):
Fans, I know you know.
Speaker 1 (01:55:56):
That Howie Roseman, at age forty eight, is now considered
one of the best general managers in all the National
Football League. And yes, yes, Howie Roseman will likely enter
the NFL Hall of Fame someday.
Speaker 5 (01:56:15):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:56:15):
Willie Wonker once said we are the makers of music
and the dreamers of dreams. Clearly Howie Roseman understood that,
and his resume is nothing more than a symphony of success. Roseman,
by any other name, is still a legend, and he
has proved once again that if you want something bad enough,
(01:56:36):
you'll find a way to get it. The truth of
the matter is how Roseman has drafted brilliantly, not just
the guys like you know, Fletcher Cox and who else
can I name? Marcus Smith? And he actually drafted Carson Wentz.
It was on his way to an MVP before tearing
his ACL against the Rams. Okay, he drafted Jason Peters.
(01:56:59):
A check at Andre Dillard, who these are all big
time starters, Jason Reger and you know, let's not forget
Jalen Hurtz. DeVante Smith. The Devanti Smith broke broke the
single season record for catches in the season by a
wide receiver and became, you know, one of the top
duels in the NFL after many teams thought he was
too small. Okay, Harry Roseman has missed on some draft picks,
(01:57:24):
but he's hit on a ton of them and he's
gotten to the Eagles of the Super Bowl twice. So
there you have it. Howy Roseman, We'll see what you
can do this Thursday night. Looking forward to it coming up.
The dance sensation sweeping the nation. What kind of brand
new fool of you? Followed by what my name? We've
got Martin weis with us tonight to join in all
(01:57:45):
the fun. Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie
Frattle Show on Fox sports radio. Well, that's right, you
heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show just keeps roll
it right along. My name is Bernie fradlewey are coming
to you alive from the tirec dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas tyrac dot com and help you get
there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping for your rotazrap
(01:58:05):
protection in over ten thousand recommend installers tyrac dot com.
The way tire buying should be. Well, we've come to
that time. In the show two am Pacific, five am Eastern.
You see hearin the Bernie Frider Show, our crackstaff. Well,
we all keep our eyes open. We observe you'll get
bear a set. At best. You can observe a lot
(01:58:26):
by watching why Well people do things around this great
nation of ours, from sea to oily sea. They engage
in activities that are peculiar. Sometimes they're innocuous and stupid,
and other times they're far more serious than running foul
of the law that can end you up in jail. However,
any way you slice it, any way you characterize it,
any way you describe it, every one of these activities
(01:58:48):
always leave us scratching our head and asking ourselves what
kind of brand new fool you? Well, you know, I
know I say this a lot that this week is
really a doozy, or this one is out there, but
(01:59:11):
this one is out there. And before I go any further,
I want to give a gentleman credit. I believe his
name is Rob. He follows me on Twitter, listens to
our show. I think his Twitter handled his legal shields, Rob,
something along those lines. I'm saying that for memory, but
he sent me this idea, so I want to give
him credit because it's a good one. We take you
to Brazil. We take you to Brazil. I believe the
(01:59:34):
first time I've ever had a what kind of brand
new fool from Brazil? Say hello to Arica de Susa
Vienna Nunez. She was arrested this past week. Well, all
she was doing was applying for a bank loan and
she needed to co sign her so she took her uncle,
her sixty eight year old uncle, mister paul o'bragau. And
(01:59:56):
you know there are there are security cameras everywhere go
these days, but especially at banks. So the security camera
shows Erica loading Uncle Paulo into a wheelchair, getting into
the car, out of the car, and you clearly see
(02:00:17):
mister Braga signing his hand. You know, his hand is moving.
She's helping him move his hand to sign a key
document because well, Erica needed to get a thirty four
hundred dollars loan. Okay, Unfortunately, what transpired next the video
(02:00:39):
cameras will show the cops showing up asking questions, and
all of a sudden, here is where the damn thing
falls apart. Because we'll all due respect to Uncle Roberto,
Uncle Paula Roberto, turns out that this Brazilian woman, Erica
(02:01:00):
de sus Via the Nunez, was trying to use her
sixty eight year old uncle to help her sign a
key document so she could get her thirty four hundred
dollars loan. There's only one problem, her uncle's dead. She
loaded the dead body into a wheelchair, wheel him into
the bank, moved his hand to sign the loan, and well,
(02:01:24):
what happens next The cops show up and the CC
the cameras show that something's going going wrong here, and
as the police start to investigate the situation, well, it
turns out there were cameras at a hospital the day
before where miss Braga was escorting her uncle to an
emergency room, and unfortunately, the poor gentleman died and the
(02:01:51):
autopsy showed that mister Braga died between eleven thirty am
and two thirty pm local time, caused death being determined
as respiratory aspiration of stomach and heart failure. Nunia's insisted
she did not know her uncle was dead when she
took him to the bank to sign the documents. It
would have allowed her to take out a thirty four
hundred dollars loan. Can't make this stuff up, folks, This
(02:02:11):
really happened. By the way, Bracus toxicology tests are still pending. Meanwhile,
Miss Union's now facing charges of theft by way of fraud.
Oh and by the way, desecration of a corpse. Well,
she's got an attorney, and her attorney claimed that Miss
Nunia suffers from mental health issues and might have experienced
a mental health breakdown. She goes through psychological treatment and
(02:02:34):
takes prescribed medications, and maybe she was having that breakdown
because of her medications. She appeared visibly disturbed. She was
even talking to her uncle. Uncle, are you listening. You
need to sign the loan contract. If you don't sign,
there's no way I can't sign for you, and then
she proceeds to help sign for him. If you followed
(02:02:56):
all that, you're better than me. But if you're going
to apply for a loan of the bank and you're
going to him bit fraud, you might not want to
bring your dead uncle. Maybe they could make a movie
about it and call it Weekended Bernie's or bank heist
with Bernie you do. I don't know what the hell
anyway you slice it, Missnonis. What kind of brand new
fool are you?
Speaker 11 (02:03:15):
My man?
Speaker 1 (02:03:15):
Martin Weis? You get to follow that?
Speaker 8 (02:03:17):
Miss you, guys, I got one for you. My brand
new fool is the movie theater cinemak. Okay, Shane Waldrop
on Valentine's Day or died a twenty four ounce beer
from a Texas cinemak, you know, on a little date
one at the hydrate with.
Speaker 9 (02:03:34):
The twenty four ounds.
Speaker 8 (02:03:35):
He picked it up, says, feels a little light, goes home,
measures it for himself, finds out only holds.
Speaker 9 (02:03:44):
Twenty two ounces, all right, So.
Speaker 8 (02:03:47):
He proposes a class action lawsuit filed last week in
Texas federal court, and as a result, Jared Elsie, one
of Waldrop's attorneys, said, quote This lawsuit is another example
of consumers unwittingly overpaying for a supposed benefit they are
not receiving. While two ounces may seem in consequences to
the seller, the bottom line is the buyer is not getting.
Speaker 9 (02:04:11):
What he's promised by the seller.
Speaker 8 (02:04:13):
We don't know who mister Walder took out on Valentine's Day,
but apparently the day was bad enough to where he
noticed he was two ounces short, and he won't stand
for it.
Speaker 1 (02:04:24):
I gotta ask you, Barton, so class action suit. So
he rounded up all the other people that got short
at two ounces in beer. It sounds like that was
that what we're doing here sounds like what damages are
the siki two ounces of beer?
Speaker 8 (02:04:37):
Hey, listen, that's two ounces of problems for Cinemak because
they look at twenty ounce drink at the Plano, Texas
Cinema theater costs seven dollars and eighty cents pre tax,
while at twenty four ounce drink costs eight to eighty.
Speaker 9 (02:04:51):
So basically, if it's only twenty two ounces, you don't
get a deal at all.
Speaker 8 (02:04:56):
It's supposed to be thirty seven an ounce or thirty
seven cent to thirty nine cents announced. Well, now it's
forty cents announce if it's only twenty two So in
an unrelated news, uh, the oriel double stuff chocolate sandwich cookies, right,
they saw said decrease in size by weight from January
twenty nineteen October twenty twenty three.
Speaker 9 (02:05:16):
So just beware your double stuff is closer to the
half stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:05:20):
Oh boy, gotta read those labels, man, double shot. Nicely done, Martin.
I've always wondered how labels work. They don't make sense
to me. It's like, you know so, and sell toothpaste
ten percent more fluoride? Well, hell, how much was I
getting before? How am I supposed to know? What does
that matter to me? How do I know? I'll tell
you what though, if I go to a theater and
play on Texas, I'll be damn if I hearder that
twenty two ounce beer, I'll be I'll be, I'll be damn.
(02:05:42):
I'd rather go to I'd rather take my uncle to
get alan at the bank. If you get my drift?
All right, Shay, you've been a veteran at this game. Uh,
what kind of brand new fool you? What do you
got for us tonight?
Speaker 10 (02:05:53):
So we go to my favorite Florida.
Speaker 9 (02:05:55):
What is this game with?
Speaker 2 (02:05:58):
A man was arrested in Florida after police miss took
a foreign substance in his car for meth Daniel Rushing
told uh. Daniel Rushing was arrested in December of twenty fifteen.
When this was a while ago. But this was a story.
I had to say, by the way, because I read this,
I was just like I.
Speaker 1 (02:06:16):
But we don't have we don't have a stance of
limitations that once kind of brand new food. I'll give it,
darn go ahead.
Speaker 2 (02:06:21):
When when Corporal Shelby Ribs Hopkins spotted flakes of glaze
on his car's floor board the glaze on his cars
for a board and thought they were pieces of crystal
meth amphetamine, Rushing told officers it was likely sugar.
Speaker 10 (02:06:38):
From the Crispy Kream donut he had earlier. The offers
did not believe the.
Speaker 2 (02:06:44):
The officers did not believe him and actually tested the
foreign objects, which ended up coming back as positive for
illegal substance. Rushing was taken to the county jail and
was booked, but four weeks later it came back that
it was indeed a Krispy Kreme donut and the tests
(02:07:07):
were wrong, and the lab tests came back saying that
he was indeed right, so he was able to actually
receive a thirty seven five hundred dollars settlement after he
sued the the Orlando Police Department. So a little turn here,
Corporal Shelby Riggs Hopkins, what kind of fool are you?
Speaker 7 (02:07:31):
I like it?
Speaker 1 (02:07:32):
I like it. Maybe you can use that money to
buy a few twenty two ounce bears at the plan
in a movie theater, what do you think? Or maybe
give miss Nunius miss Nunius alone, which she clearly needs.
She she brought her uncle. I guess you know he
was slumped over in the chair. I guess you could
say when she walked into the bank. It must have
been a dead giveaway. Oh no, who writes this stuff?
(02:07:55):
All right, good night, folks, You've been a great audience.
That that, then, of course, completes another resounding, rousing edition
of what kind of brand new fool You, which allows
us now to segue into our second favorite bit, which
we lovingly refer to as what my name?
Speaker 11 (02:08:18):
And he.
Speaker 1 (02:08:20):
We go, well, we just finished the Masters last week.
Just removed from that, and you may know this. I
am the youngest player to ever win the Master's Tournament
was twenty five years old in eighty days. Martin Weiss,
What my name?
Speaker 9 (02:08:41):
That is one? Eldrick Tiger Woods A good.
Speaker 1 (02:08:46):
Guess, but not the right answer. Not the right answer,
but a good guess. I am the youngest player to
ever win the Master's Tournament. Twenty five years and eighty days.
Shane Mogingar, What my name? It's not Tiger, Not Tiger.
I think it's Tiger. It's not Tiger. Let's try, mister Ramsey,
(02:09:08):
I'm the youngest player to win the Masters at twenty
five years old and eighty days. Mark Ramsey, What my
name is?
Speaker 9 (02:09:15):
His name Speith?
Speaker 1 (02:09:17):
It's not not Speith, not Speith. It's a guy by
the name of Jack Nicholas. Twenty five years and eighty
days now, I am the second youngest player to ever
win the Masters. Twenty five years and ninety nine days.
Martin Whites, What my name?
Speaker 9 (02:09:36):
I'm still stuck on.
Speaker 8 (02:09:37):
I'm pretty sure Tiger won the Master before he was
twenty five.
Speaker 10 (02:09:40):
Tiger went twenty one, Yeah, Tiger one when he was
twenty one.
Speaker 1 (02:09:44):
I did it two weeks in a row prize.
Speaker 10 (02:09:45):
What's going on?
Speaker 9 (02:09:49):
You tell me that and didn't Jordan Speith also win
at twenty one. I think I also think.
Speaker 1 (02:09:56):
That maybe Jack was twenty one years in eighty days.
You know what, guys, I promise I haven't been drinking,
but I guess when you do eight of these a
week for three years, I did it. I did it
a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 5 (02:10:11):
Two.
Speaker 1 (02:10:11):
Let's move along. This one will be correct, Sorry, guys. O, god,
my bad, bad.
Speaker 9 (02:10:17):
What kind of brand new fool I am?
Speaker 1 (02:10:20):
I am? As soon as I get off FOURK, I'm
going to the Plane of Movies in order a beer
and then get a loan from my uncle while I'm
in it. All right, I'm the head coach of the
only NBA team to play a full game without My
team was attempting a single free throw? What my name?
(02:10:41):
Let meant, I'm all screwed up, Shane Mogangar, what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:10:45):
So a head coach of the NBA team that didn't
score a.
Speaker 1 (02:10:49):
Free throw, didn't even not a single free throw.
Speaker 9 (02:10:54):
That just happened.
Speaker 1 (02:10:55):
It just happened, that's right.
Speaker 10 (02:10:56):
Oh my god, what team was that?
Speaker 1 (02:10:59):
Oh?
Speaker 10 (02:11:00):
I just haven't.
Speaker 1 (02:11:03):
Let's move along. I'm the head coach of the only
NBA team to play a full game without a single
free throw. Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:11:12):
Larry Brown?
Speaker 1 (02:11:14):
Not Larry Brown, the legend Larry Brown. I'm the head
coach of an NBA team, the only NBA team to
play a full game without a single free throw? Martin Weisch.
Speaker 9 (02:11:22):
What my name the game?
Speaker 8 (02:11:24):
Shaw was the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks. The
answer is Joe Missoula.
Speaker 1 (02:11:30):
Joe Missoula, correct, the head coach of the Balton Boston.
Speaker 10 (02:11:34):
Celtics saw that press conference too.
Speaker 1 (02:11:36):
Yep, it just happened, you guys, all right, this gentleman
recently passed. If you are a Dodger fan, he's a
legend because I am the first out check that I. Okay,
let me try that again in English again. The first
ever Dodgers game in Los Angeles was played in nineteen
(02:11:58):
fifty eight, and I was the winning pitcher. Mark Ramsey,
what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:12:04):

Angeles was played nineteen fifty eight. I was the winning pitcher.
Shaan Ognger. What my name.
Speaker 8 (02:12:16):

Speaker 10 (02:12:17):
Is it Sandy?
Speaker 1 (02:12:18):
Not Sandy Kofax. The first ever Dodgers game was in
Los Angeles was played in Los Angeles in nineteen fifteen.
I was the winning pitcher, Martin Weiss. What my name? Uh?
Speaker 9 (02:12:33):
Walter Johnson?
Speaker 1 (02:12:35):
The train that I trained with the Fulton High School.
Believe it or not?
Speaker 9 (02:12:38):
Oh wow?
Speaker 1 (02:12:38):
Actually a gentleman bout the name of Carl Erskine, and
he just died this past week in ninety seven, a
legendary dodger. Okay let's switch to hockey. I recently became
only the fourth player in NHL history to record one
hundred sists in a single season, Mark Ramsey, what my name?
(02:13:00):
They know?
Speaker 9 (02:13:00):
One named Eddie Elchik, the.
Speaker 1 (02:13:02):
Former Blackhawk current broadcaster. Not Eddie Elchick. I recently became
only the fourth player in NHL history to record one
hundred assists in the single season. Martin Weiss, what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:13:15):
I have two options. I'm gonna go ahead and go
with Connor McDavid, and.
Speaker 1 (02:13:20):
You would be correct. My friend Connor McDavid of the
Colorado Avalanche.
Speaker 9 (02:13:26):
Did Now, did the fifth one also happened this year?
Speaker 4 (02:13:30):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:13:30):
No, he's the fourth. It just happened this year.
Speaker 9 (02:13:32):
No, I know, but I think the fifth one happened
this year as well.
Speaker 1 (02:13:36):
Is there another player that did it.
Speaker 9 (02:13:37):
I think Nikita.
Speaker 8 (02:13:38):
Kucherov also had one hundred, but look maybe one hundred
after No, no, no, no, no, you're right. McDavid had
it first, so he's the fourth. But Nikita Kutroz also
had one hundred assists this season, being the fifth. But
McDavid did it before Kucharov did.
Speaker 1 (02:13:53):
He did, and they're in regardless, They're in pretty damn
good company when you consider it's guys like Bobby Yorr
and Wayne Gretzky. Pretty good company, all right. I still,
to this day hold the record for the most thirty
point games in a row during the NBA playoffs. Mark Ramsey,
(02:14:15):
what my name?
Speaker 11 (02:14:19):
Does?
Speaker 9 (02:14:19):
He play for the Golden State Warriors.
Speaker 1 (02:14:22):
He does not. To this day, I still hold the
record for the most thirty point games in a row
during the NBA playoffs. Shaane Mogngar, what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:14:33):
The King Leogout?
Speaker 1 (02:14:35):
Nope, his day is still hold the record for the
most thirty point games in a row during the NBA playoffs.
Martin Weiss what my name?
Speaker 8 (02:14:44):
I saw this earlier today because I believe Anthony Edwards
is nipping on his heels, but that will be Michael
Jeffrey Jordan.
Speaker 1 (02:14:52):
Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Yes, absolutely correct. All right, We're gonna
go way out in left field. This is the kind
of guess that Andy Furman would get. I'm the youngest
pitcher ever to appear in a Major League baseball game.
I was actually only fifteen years old. Mark Ramsey, what
(02:15:14):
my name, Burt? He actually got to the big leagues
in nineteen He was from San Diego High School, by
the way in Garden Grove. I'm the youngest pitcher ever
to appear in a Major league baseball game. I was
only fifteen years old. Martin Weiss, what my name? Uh?
Speaker 9 (02:15:33):
Look, Joe Abbott, which is notable for another reason, not that.
Speaker 1 (02:15:37):
You mean Jim Abbott with Jim Jim Abbott. Yeah, he
actually played at Michigan. He was he was a college
player before he got to the big leagues. I am
the youngest pitcher to appear in a Major league baseball game.
I was only fifteen years old. Shane Mogangar, What my name?
Speaker 10 (02:15:51):
The kid from Little Big League?
Speaker 1 (02:15:55):
I hated that movie.
Speaker 9 (02:15:57):
That movie so bad.
Speaker 1 (02:15:59):
Oh my god. If I was at the Plano movie theater,
I'd be drinking so many I wouldn't go to.
Speaker 9 (02:16:04):
The movie Henry Rowan Gardner them.
Speaker 1 (02:16:08):
That was the kid in the movie. Yeah, actually a
gentleman by the name of Joe Nuxhall, Joe Knuxhall, and
he went on to become an announcer later. There's again.
This is like during the war, right they were signing
guys with no arms. I think no, he actually got
to the big leagues at age fifteen, age fifteen. I
would do one more. This is a classic. I think
I came out of retirement for two days in nineteen
(02:16:30):
eighty to play for the Chicago White Sox, and that
allowed me to appear in games in five decades. Mark Ramsey,
I gotta believe you know this one.
Speaker 9 (02:16:40):
What my name Memi minosel It is Mey Minos.
Speaker 1 (02:16:45):
I love Mini Minoso. I think it was like fifty
three years old too when it happened. All right, another
rousing condition of what kind of brand new fool you
followed by what my name? Great job, guys, great job
all the way around, and great job keeping me honest.
Coming up. Well, I know a lot of people lost
(02:17:05):
their minds when Tom Brady went on some podcast recently
and he was merely asked would you consider coming back
to the NFL off call, and he said, well, I
am open to it. Well, what do NFL personnel have
to say about what tom Brady's comments were and what
has been their actual blunt reaction to any Tom Brady
(02:17:30):
come back talk. It might really surprise you. I will
share coming up. I'm Bernie Fradder or Company live from
Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirec dot Com Studios. Keep
it locked so Bernie Fratter Show on Fox Sports Radio.
By the way, I'm on a roll. I don't know
how it came out of my mouth. I've only seen
Connor McDavid play here in Vegas three times. He played
for the Vonton Eulers. Props to Darryl Griffin for pointing
(02:17:51):
that out love the people who lie in wait for
you to make a single mistake.
Speaker 7 (02:17:56):
Man.
Speaker 1 (02:17:57):
You know, maybe not one of my better referens tonight,
but these folks still listen, and we love having you listen,
love having you lie and wait. Tom Brady had some
comeback talk, but it really wasn't comeback talk. I mean
someone merely asked him, would you be open to coming back?
And considering how much tom Brady accomplished during his NFL
(02:18:18):
playing career. I guess you might expect an needy team
to maybe be a little enthusiastic about a potential comeback
should the stars align. Look what happened Joe Flacco last year.
That worked out pretty well. And on a recent appearance
of a show called Get Up with Jeremy Fowler, he
addressed Brady's recent suggestion that he would be open to
an NFL comeback. According to Foller, the prospect of Brady
(02:18:42):
potentially coming back and again, the stars would really have
to align. You'd have to do somebody in contention in November.
Brady's not going to training camp, right But apparently that
prospect of Tom Brady even considering coming back is that
almost no traction in NFL circles. Some scouts have suc
said they really believe even in his final season, Brady
(02:19:04):
was lacking in motivation. They saw on his face he
wasn't the same guy, maybe because he was going through
divorce or whatever. But the truth of the matter is
around NFL circles, there's not a lot of interest maybe
that Brady would do that, now, I get it. Brady
was just having fun on a podcast when he made
the comments. Maybe he wasn't even serious, he was merely
asking a question. But the truth of the matter is,
(02:19:25):
even if Brady was serious about a comeback, it sounds
like the NFL has moved on and their Luke warrem
about the prospect of Tom Brady ever coming back. So
to those of those folks who lost their mind about
this possibility, I would say there's a high probability Tom
Brady has played his last snap in the NFL. Coming
up Chris Profet's World Soccer. But first we go back
(02:19:45):
to our guy, Martin Weiss with the latest.
Speaker 8 (02:19:49):
You know, Bernie, what's interesting about that conversation about Tom Brady.
One thing I did want to touch on. It's gonna
be fascinating this season as Bill Belichick sits on the
sidelines and a lot of people think it's coaching career
is over. But as the first coaches on the hot seat,
they're gonna say, we could have Bill Bellichick instead of
this guy.
Speaker 1 (02:20:07):
I think he I think there are three or four
teams that'll be interested after next year. But that's a
fair analogy.
Speaker 8 (02:20:12):
Go ahead, all right anyway, Uh, not football, but we
have hockey and basketball playoffs in full swing right now.
All of these game Oness, the Hurricanes beat the Islanders
three to one. Bruins pounded the Maple Leafs.
Speaker 9 (02:20:23):
Five to one.
Speaker 8 (02:20:24):
In the NBA, the Nuggets had beaten the Lakers last
eight times they played last night, makes it nine Denver wins,
one to fourteen to one to Zho three. Lebron had
seven turnovers to go along with twenty seven points and
eight assists. Three Denver starters with double doubles, the Koley Okins,
Jabal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Air Gordon had twelve points
and eleven rebounds in the win. The Minnesota Timberwolves beat
(02:20:45):
the Phoenix Suns one twenty to ninety five. Anthony Edwards,
you know he's now has four straight thirty five and
five games coming up. On Michael Jordan, as you said,
had as I said earlier today, I shuldpose and in
your game. He had thirty three for the game, eighteen
in the third quarter by itself. Nicks beat the seventy
six ers one eleven to one.
Speaker 9 (02:21:04):
Oh four.
Speaker 8 (02:21:05):
Dwell and bet reaccivated that bad knee in the third quarter,
was two four eleven from the floor after his injury.
Did finish with twenty nine points. Cavaliers beat the Magic
ninety seven to eighty three. That Donovan Mitchell had thirty
Palo Ban Carol twenty four in the loss. Tomorrow in
the NHL to sorry today. In the NHL, the Lightning
play the Panthers, Capitals play the Rangers, Avalanche, and the
(02:21:26):
Jets and the Predators and the Canucks. In the NBA,
the Heat and the Celtics start things off early. The
Dallas Mavericks and LA Clippers follow that. No Kawhi Leonard
his knee still bothering him. The Pacers and the Bucks.
There's a trend here. No Jannis Antetokumpo his legs still
bothering him. And no Zion Williamson for the New Orleans Pelicans.
(02:21:48):
Tomorrow he's out. The Pelicans and the thunder round out
the rest of the game.
Speaker 1 (02:21:54):
Ones.
Speaker 9 (02:21:54):
In the NBA, Bernie back to you, all right, Martin.
Speaker 1 (02:21:58):
Appreciate it, buddy. Well, look, we're just three months away
from the Paris Olympics and we will see soccer back
on the national stage. But it doesn't have to be
on the field. It can be off the field. It
doesn't have to be in season, it could be out
of season. There's always plenty of doings. That's what we're
bringing you Chris Purffett's World of Soccer.
Speaker 11 (02:22:17):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum.
Speaker 4 (02:22:29):
Hi, It's all here in this report from the world
of soccer. We begin tonight on the world of soccer.
Bernie with our friends in Wrexham. That is right to
the club Wrexham in Wales. The Stars of fx is
welcome to Rexham. The club owned by Rob McIlhenny and
(02:22:50):
Ryan Reynolds, has once again, the second year in a row,
found promotion to the next league. They clinched it here
they had been in the net National League last year,
moved up to the English Football League Level two and
here this past week with how the rest of the
league played out and a dominating six MIERL win over
(02:23:12):
Forrest Green, they have secured promotion third in League two
and they were moving up to EFL League One. Let's
recap you on how that works. So there is three
levels the EFL before the Premier League. The Premier League
is the top of the English table structure the ladder
if you will.
Speaker 9 (02:23:30):
League two goes to League one.
Speaker 4 (02:23:32):
League one then goes to the Championship and if you
win and are promoted from the EFL Championship, you are
in the Premier League. Now let's not count those chickens
just yet. It's a long way to go, but it
is once. It is remarkable for a club that was
scraping the barrel in the national league, for a club
that was in so much peril before this whole little
(02:23:54):
experiment began with the American star investors and owners and
this reality TV show and everything all coming together and
two years running, Rexham have secured their promotion a dream
come true. Now this time they won't be coming with hardware,
going up to League One. They actually did not win
(02:24:16):
the EFL League Two. That would be a signed by
the name of Stockport County, who sealed their title with
a win five to two over Notts County.
Speaker 5 (02:24:26):
Back on this past Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (02:24:29):
Still in two years, suddenly rumping up to the English
Football's third tier of play. Not a whole hell of
that of a return to glory for a club that
ages and ages ago used to have so much that
they could feel proud about, And this one though, they
will feel proud. Fans over there, long long suffering and
(02:24:51):
waiting for a return. It's one of these things where
I keep watching the TV show and keep wondering if
the good times can keep rolling. Moving up League One
puts them closer and closer to the big boys seats
in the Championship, where teams do come and go from
the Premier League quite often, but in the top flights. Bernie,
we have on Sunday the last El Classico of the
(02:25:14):
La Liga schedule coming up here Barcelona Real Madrid in
Barnabo Stadium. Here in Madrid, it is a tale of
two clubs. Once again. We always like to check in
on Barcelona and Real Madrid, the hottest rivalry in sports
all across the world, two of the biggest clubs in
the world, and once again a bit of a familiar
(02:25:37):
story as we check in and find that Barcelona is
reeling in spite of some promise that they were hoping
to fix upon here in the twenty twenty three to
twenty twenty four season. It look with about eight points
in about a month to go, it would take a
miracle for them to catch up with longtime rivals Real Madrid,
(02:25:58):
who once again sit the Spanish table. But the fortunes
and misfortunes of each club don't really stop there. Barcelona's
manager Zavi Hernandez leaving a high profile job at Barcelona
amid amid frustration, burnout and most of all, just blaming
fans and supporters for unrealistic expectations as the Barcelona crown
(02:26:22):
starts to turn ugly, also getting slapped with a ban
for racism after fans were throwing up Nazi salutes during
a Champions League match against Paris Saint Germain. And sure,
while we've got that Champions League wound open, let's talk
about it. Barcelona went into the second leg of the
Champions League against Paris Saint Germain up one goal, up
(02:26:45):
one goal from the first match, and proceeded to lose
one four at home in Barcelona, allowing Paris Saint Germain
and Killing Embape to advance six to four to the
UAFA semi Finals, where they will take on Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile,
(02:27:06):
Real Madrid, by contrast, talking about the fortunes of that
club right now, they were lucky and they moved past
Manchester City on penalty kicks after the second leg of
the aggregate was tied. And you know, expected to be
the home here of Killing Embape when he leaves Paris
(02:27:27):
Saint Germain at the end of the Sea of the
French season, and on top of that, talk about a
star in Jude Bellingham that they have they and that's
not even the stop of their embarrassment of riches. But
Bellingham might be the greatest jewel they have waiting to
pair with killing Embape, a man who, in spite of
(02:27:51):
some injuries, just seems unstoppable as he just continues to
score goal after goal after goal in La Liga and
in the Champions It's a rivalry that continues to fascinate
us this l Classico. It's a rivalry between two clubs
that have always boasted the two some of the best
stars in the world, and yet Barcelona seems to be
(02:28:13):
permanently a step behind, from having to finally add sponsors
to the start to the front of their jerseys, to
various financial woes, to struggling and struggling to sign the
kind of caliber players that Real Madrid gets. Meanwhile, Real
Rodrid seems to just get richer and richer, stronger and
(02:28:34):
stronger as the years go by. They'll be taking on
Bayern Munich in the semi finals of the Champions League
and they could be looking at another set of Champions
League and La Liga crowns. If they can get this home.
It's something that I feel like in Spain is starting
to get a little long in the tooth, and we'll
see if the Barcelona can salvage any kind of pride,
(02:28:58):
anything at all. It all has to start here on
Sunday and they have to win l Classico. That's for
us in the world of soccer, Bernie, We're coming down
to the home stretches about a month ago in many
of the domestics out there. Very exciting time, very exciting
time in the Champions League, and the Olympics are coming
up soon and we will have plenty more to talk
(02:29:20):
to about from there. Until that time, this has been
the world of soccer.
Speaker 1 (02:29:25):
There you have it. Like I said, plenty of goofy
names you never heard of, plenty of certain obvious stories
well that you may not be so familiar with. But
I'll tell you it's always something in the world of
soccer coming up. A legend retires in the broadcast booth,
(02:29:46):
We'll share it. I'm Bernie Fratto. We're coming you live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio, TIREC dot Com studios.
Keep it locked you're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, we are wrapping it
up on the Bernie frattlesh Show, comingy live from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tyrack dot Com studios. And
(02:30:07):
I want to thank my broadcast team before I go
any further. Patrick Sweeke, he was with us the first
hour and then Shave Mogngar took over. Great job, guys,
appreciate all your help. Martin Weiss, fine job tonight on
the updates and all the other discussion. And of course
Mark Ramsey, our technical producer, turning all the dials keeping
(02:30:29):
us good together. Great job tonight, guys, and all the stuff,
especially brand new fool and what my name always fun
to cajole? And I still can't get the the beer
price and plan on Texas out of my head. And
a class action lawsuit involving two ounces of beer. That
and a dead uncle trying to co sign a loan
(02:30:49):
in Brazil. We had some beauties tonight, just some classic stuff.
Donut being mistaken for drug, Okay, just good stuff, guys,
good stuff. Well. Look, the New York Yankees Saturday honored
a longtime radio legend who'd been behind the booth. He
(02:31:12):
was behind the booth. He was in the booth behind
the microphone for sixty four years. And I had the
opportunity to meet John Sterling once in two thousand and
four when the Yankees passed through Comerica Park, and that
was when he was doing It's an a Bomb from
a Rod. They told him to stop doing anyway. People
(02:31:32):
can think he's a little corny, and people can, you know,
wonder whether or not some of his expressions were as
funny as he thought they were. But this is a
guy who announced his retirement suddenly at age eighty five,
and he's going to be missed. And part of it
is his personalized home run calls. They became what some
people would call the soundtrack of summer for lots of
(02:31:55):
generations of Yankees fans. He had a home run unique
call for many, many, many Yankees. You've heard the Aaron
Judge all rise, here comes the Judge, or you know,
he would call Derek Jeter, l capy ten and even
even the bench players like Eric Hinsky, and he would
Hinsky would hit a dinger. He'd say, Hinsk me, Hinsk
(02:32:16):
me with your best shot. Little Pat Benatar reference there right.
But the truth of the matter is the players loved it.
And there's talk that when spring training would roll around
every year, fans and players would try to guess, I
wonder what kind of baseball home run call He'll come
up with? Which player this year? And he would advote.
(02:32:38):
He would, you know, often invoke former Yankees, baseball history,
pop culture, if you do your Broadway musicals, if you
you know the Italian language, you name it. Fans would
try to guess Sterling's calls, and players, Aaron Judge admitted,
we'd be sitting in the bus. We'd trade for somebody
new or maybe someone's coming up it's their first game,
and he'd say, hey, what what are we going to do?
(02:32:58):
What's John going to do if this player hits a
home run? Not some of these aren't, you know, the greatest,
but they're legendary because John Sterling was a legend, and
there was sort of a vote and ten of the
best John Sterling home run calls, and there were variations.
(02:33:18):
These are some of the examples. Bernie Williams, he would
call it burn, baby burn. That was not the first
Sterling call, but for all intents and purposes, it kind
of started the craze. All right. Bernie Williams made his
major League baseball debut in nineteen ninety one, and whenever
he would hit home run, John Sterling would say, burn, Baby, burn,
and it caught on. Then Tino Martinez in nineteen ninety seven, right,
(02:33:44):
he called it the bam Tino. Why he was combining
Babe Ruth the Great Bambino and Tino Martinez. He got
a lot of mileage out of that. When Jason Giammy
would hit a home run, he'd call out the Giambino,
And then Gary Sanchez would hit a home run, call
it the Sanchino. Okay, yeah, is it corny? Don't act
(02:34:04):
like he didn't like it. John Sterling was a legend.
It due was eighty five years old, still relevant. How
about Hideki Matsui, one of the greatest sluggers in Japanese baseball.
Matsui got to New York with not a lot of
fanfare at three, but by a two thousand and six
they were in the World Series. I actually talked to
him once. What a gentleman. I covered the two thousand
and six World Series in Detroit. But whenever Hideki Matsui
(02:34:27):
would hit a home run, John Sterling would call it
a thrilla from Godzilla, and I guess you can't go
wrong with a Godzilla reference, right then. Of course that
I asked John Sterling about this in the press box
in two thousand and four, and a bomb from Ay Rod.
Now A Rod hit three hundred and sixty one home
runs with the Yankees, believe it or not, when you
(02:34:48):
add up the regular season in the postseason by far
the most of anybody during the John Sterling era. And
Sterling actually called almost five one hundred straight games from
nine eighty on to July twenty nineteen, so we called
every single one of a Rod's home runs and Ben
Stripes three hundred and sixty one of them. But one
of the most used calls, the most used call an
(02:35:09):
a bomb from a Rod, and I was told he
was he was asked not to do it. And how
about remember Robinson Canoe, Robbie Cano, don't you know right,
he was kind of cool and calm, just kind of
rolled off his tongue. Now this one I don't remember,
but somehow it made the top ten. Of course, John
Johnny Damon he would call it, you know, he hit
a Johnny rocket, but he would call it positively Daimonic
(02:35:32):
that one I don't remember right, but I do remember
Jacobe Elsberry he Elsbury is it? Or alex Verdugo Alexander
the Great or Brett Gardner Gardner plants one Gardner plant.
You see little corny right, guardy goes yardy, or it's
a guardy party. They were also part of it. Sometimes players,
they would warrant two or three. Uh, Brett Gardner had
(02:35:56):
Gardner plants. One guardy goes yardy and it's a Guardi party.
How about Mark to Cher? Now you probably couldn't have
done this one before, you know, two thousand and what
eight two thousand and six, Mark tech Sherer. Whenever you
would hit a home run, he sends a text message,
a text, not text, a text message, which is ironic
(02:36:17):
because even until this past week when John Sterling retired,
yeah he had a cell phone, but it was a
flip phone, he would call it a text message. And finally,
labor Taurus like a good glaber taurus is there? See
what he did there? A little play on the state
farm jingle like a good neighbor. Okay, you don't don't
make me spelled off for you or you Also sometimes
(02:36:38):
he would say it's Glaber day or he's the glaber
of the month for Taurus. Those were Sterling's most clever calls.
John Sterling, you did the game proud, and the Yankees
did us proud by honoring you Saturday night. Very well
deserved sixty four years in the booth. He was eighty
five years young. John Sterling looked forward to your next
(02:36:59):
eighty five years. You earned it, you deserved it. It's
gonna do it for the Bernie Friddle Show. I will
be back on these airwaves next Friday night at eleven
pm Pacific. You will be listening meantime. Keep it locked
up next to the great Andy Furman, Fox Sports Radio.
