Speaker 1 (00:01):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man that time of week.
My name is Bernie Froderwick condy lyon from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas. We'll take you
up to three m Pacific, six am Eastern and Man, tonight,
I think I've got about ten hours of content. I'm
going to try to get into four. And yes, I'm
gonna give the Dodgers or Flowers in a minute. And
(00:25):
I want to get to some of the college football
takeaways today which were somewhat significant in a minute. And
I sometimes like to say, in a world of questions,
we've got answers. In a world of problems, we've got solutions.
And before I get to the aforementioned topics, I have
to begin with this preamble. In two thousand and four,
while I was in Detroit with CBS Radio ninety seven
(00:47):
one FM w KRK at that time, probably did about
two hundred shows with Rob Parker, and thanks to Rob,
I had additional access to the Pistons I might not
have had, but of course we covered that team. In
two thousand and four, the Pistons beat the Lakers won
the World championship in five games. They were led by
a guy named Chauncey Billups, who not only led the
(01:10):
Pistons to an improbable NBA championship, he was the Finals MVP.
He was a leader, He was a floor general.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
He was clutch.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
He had the name mister big Shot. Most of you
I have an intelligent audience. Most of you already know
that I brought up Chauncey quite a bit three years ago,
four years ago, when he was hired by the Portland Trailblazers.
And what was on my mind? Assume I know he
was a good player. How would he be as a coach?
What might it look like three years from now? Could
(01:39):
he master game management, substitution patterns? Could he maximize players
coming out of timeouts? How would he be in situational
points doing a typical phonetic NBA game? Could he assemble
a good staff? But in the end, if you'd have
told me in three years he'd be arrested by the
FBI as part of what looks to be an incredibly
(02:01):
salacious gambling probe, You're gonna knock me over with a feather. Now,
all I'll say about this is this, because I'm extremely
well researched, and I promise you as we get into
the show later tonight, I'm going to heavily dive into this.
I'm going to break down these allegations. What sports figures
are involved, how are they implicated, what are the specifics
(02:22):
of the alleged illegal activities. We're going to get into
all of this, not in the periphery. And by the way,
the potential for additional fallout now we're hearing miss a
tipp of the iceberg. Is it maybe because you don't
know what you don't know and nobody knows nothing. What
I do know is this that the optics of this
(02:44):
alone very much undermine the integrity of this institution. And
that's wonderful that Adam Silver is deeply deserved. Well, what
are you going to do about it? And by the way,
what gambling NBA scamble would be replete without the mention
of Tim donaghy, who actually has a bold prediction as
to where this is gonna go, and how here's a
(03:07):
tease it might even leak into the college game. We
are going to get into this. We have to quite
a bit. Be part of our Midnight Hour, be part
with Mark Medina and later on the show. Again, I
would specifically get into what I know because I've done
as much research as I can and I'm not gonna
simply regurgitate what you've heard. But we are going to
(03:29):
get into this. I'm also not going to speculate because
you just don't know what you just don't know. Meanwhile,
how about those Los Angeles Dodgers. I thought they'd beat
their chest just a little bit too much in Toronto
after Game one, interviewing all those fine Canadian folks and
their salacious commercials. But let me tell you something about
the Dodgers, whether you're a fan or not, and they're
looking to repeat for the first time in twenty five
(03:51):
years of any Major League team repeating in the World Series.
This team's been to the World Series five times in
the last nine years. They've been in nine straight playoffs.
Their first, second, and third hitters are all former MVPs.
So what showed up tonight showed up tonight because this
is what's in there in their DNA. The Blue Jays
entered the game hitting three to five, with more home
(04:13):
runs than any team in the postseason. That didn't seem
to bother Yoshinobu Yama motive. No one told him that
all out one run in nine innings his last game
out Game two of the NLCS. He does it again,
just for fun. Dijibul over again, Yogi in Game two
of the World Series. Oh yeah, just for fun. He
(04:34):
also retired the last twenty batters he faced Saturday night,
allowing just five base runners, striking out eight without walking
a single batter, although there was one hit by pitch,
and it was quite the duel for a while. Because
the way opposing starter for Toronto, Kevin Gossman, was going
allowing just one run through six innings. Yamamoto's effort was
(04:56):
crucial and he came through. See because the Blue Jays
have a strategy. Much like Game one, when the Blue
Jays forced Blake Snowed to throw twenty nine pitches in
the first inning, well, Yamamoto had to work early as well.
He had a twenty three pitch first inning, but he
worked his way out of it. An Unlike Game One,
that laborious inning did not wear Yamamoto out. It made
(05:18):
him stronger. Over the next four innings, Yamamoto only need
thirty seven pitches. You saw what happened, you know to me?
The most worthless part of any broadcast is when the
weathermen comes out at eleven o'clock at night and says, well,
it was any one degrees today. I know I was there.
Tell me what it's going to be tomorrow. Try to
be right. One out of three times you saw what happened,
(05:41):
so we don't need to belabor it. I already can't
wait for Tuesday. But I will tell you this because
no one's talking about this. The Blue Jays have their
own bullpen concerns. As much focus as there been and
justifiably so on the Dodgers shaky bullpen. Toronto is not
immune from bullpen disaster. In fact, the Blue Jays bullpen
(06:02):
was one of the biggest areas of concern entering the postseason,
and in October they're featuring a five point five two
era entering the World Series. So on Saturday, you know,
when you have a situation where the Dodgers started the attack,
you know, attack on home runs, Will Smith getting jiggy
(06:23):
with it, Max Munsey was cut by the Oakland. A's
all right, Dodgers tack on insurance runs, they create more distance.
They returned to Los Angeles. I believe the Dodgers were
in the driver's seat in the series. Do I believe
it to go back to Toronto? Yes, Toronto didn't win
ninety five games by accident, and the bullpen will rear
its head. We don't know what's going to happen. Predicting
(06:43):
the future is hard, but buckle up. We got a
beauty coming this next week and I am here for
it all right. What was also beauty today? Marcel Reed
has not been talked about a lot. He's been in
all the papers, but if you don't get the paper,
they and you might not know. The Texas A and
M quarterback gave LSU nothing but problems tonight from the jump.
(07:05):
Three hundred yards of total offense, four touchdowns. Texas A
and M. Look at them. They'd hoped to do this
three years ago with this great nil program they had.
Now it's happening. Marcell Reid twenty three touchdowns on the season,
the yagg's or eight zero. They are probably the top
team in the SEC. I would say, we don't know,
(07:25):
We'll see what that happens. And to get on the
field with teams like Alabama. But look, when you go
into LSU and put up a forty nine Burger and
they put up forty one at Notre Dame. Okay, they've
got your attention. By the way, Brian Kelly, I'd like
to thank you for participating. You can lose the Southern accent.
I'm not going to pick on Brian Kelly. But here's
(07:46):
the problem. When you take the job at LSU, this
is what you sign up for. See because Nick Saban
and Les Miles and at oors Run, they all won
a championship in their fourth year at LSU. Yeah, you
guess this is Brian Kelly's fourth year at LSU. I'm
gonna go out on limbit. I don't think he's gonna
(08:07):
win the national championship this year. How about that total
load in the shorts lane. Kiffin gets the biggest road
win of his tenure in Oxford. They're seven and one
now and you gotta love Trinidad at Chambliss, he's from
Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids Northern Forest Hill's Northern High School,
(08:29):
zero scholarships out of high school, goes to Farris State
where they win the Division seven national championship. And look
at him. Now, look, Mama, there there go that man again.
You know you can't right off Texas yet. They're kind
of drama kings and very much under the radar arch
Manning is kind of doing pretty good, but no one
(08:52):
seems to care anymore, and give it up to Bama.
It looks like Klein de Bor is doing at Bamba
what he did at Washington. We'll see if it can continue,
you know. They complete the two point conversion to tie
the game. They go on to win the game. It
wasn't pretty, but they don't draw pictures in the scorebook. Finally,
Indiana and Vanderbilt continue to be and I'm gonna get
into this later in the show. Why is this happening?
(09:14):
Wild nine coach has been fired before October? It's real simple.
First you had the transfer portal, then you had nil
that basically add college football free agency. Then you got
these big donors saying, all right, we'll give you money,
but now we want we got skin of the game.
We want make decisions. So we're now we're defacto owners.
We don't want that coach. You're firing them. We're getting
the guy we wanted. You're not getting our money. Signetty
(09:36):
has ruined it for everybody. He goes to Indiana and says,
see this can be done. Jonathan C. Smith not so much.
In Michigan State Vanderbilt Clark Lee give him a lot
of credit, but he's got a pretty good quarterback too.
Welcome to the wild wild West of college football. Like
I said, I got about ten hours worth of stuff tonight.
I hope to get to it in four hours, or
(09:58):
I hope to get to most of it. But coming up. Hey,

All right back at the Bernie Fratas Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come You're live from Las Vegas, Fox First Radio CDs
just getting started with take up to three in Pacific
six am Eastern. We are just what ten hours and
forty one minutes away from a sensational in fl slate
Sunday and Monday. Nobody better to have than our guy. Yep,
(11:48):
it's that time for the Physic five. Yes, the only
two time back to back winner, the prestigious Hilton now
Westgate Super Contest. So Fez, why don't we start up there?
You are a contest officionado. How are you doing in
the contest this year?
Speaker 5 (12:06):
Mixed bag? Bernie so got one left of free in Survivor,
and I had the colts this week on the rams
next week, so I should be good to go into
November circum millions. I am twenty two and thirteen, so
I'm right around one hundredth place. Can't complain about that,
especially as tough a year as it's been for all
the sharps. The consensus plays, the line moves have not
(12:28):
won in the NFL, so fingers crossed in that and
several other contests. But you know what, I'm not in
contention in those, so they I won't bore you with them.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yeah, but that's why I don't do these contests anymore.
You're sixty six percent in your one hundredths. I was
in the Westgate Super Contest in twenty fourteen and I
was fifty seven percent on the year and finished two
hundred and ninth. But I digress, Faz. Let's start. Let's
do things backwards today. Let's start with your best bet.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
Oh, let's go with you know I'm going to do
a player. I'm gonna go. I just bet this, so
I apologize. You can't get the same number. But I
went old school, Bernie. I was driving around the valley
here in Las Vegas. The Giants cam Scataboo under fifty
six and a half rush yards against that staunt Eagle defense.
And you know what, two weeks ago, Giants, they took
(13:19):
it out on the Eagles. Jalen Carter didn't play, and
after the victory, Scataboo stripped down half naked with Ryan Fitzpatrick.
As the Great John Goodman once said in Revenge of
the Nerds, you just got your butt kicked. If it
was me, I do something about it. I expect the
Eagles well, not to mention. The real beauty of this
(13:39):
bet is that Tracy is back for the Giants. He
was more effective last week. I expect split carries, so
good luck get into fifty six yards when you're splitting
carries with Tracy, mister Scattaboo, who I do.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Love though now memories are long. I saw that and
I looked for Philly to most likely take care of
business Sunday as well. You're usually good for one teaser
in this segment says, what's the teaser you like this week?
Speaker 5 (14:03):
Well, what a set up you gave me? So Philly
is minus seven, will tease them down to minus one
with the Atlanta Falcons against yet yeah, against that dead
Miami Dolphin team. You know what, Just give it to Bejon,
give it to Algiers. Don't screw it up. Mister Pennix, who,
by the way, I did play like under two.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Hundred and twenty you know, isn't playing tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
So yeah, it doesn't matter. Kaile Cousins rated exactly the same.
Remember Cousins got hurt last year. He was fine until
he got hurt. He took that big hit and then
he was awful. I've got Pennis and Cousins six and
one half does Yeah, that's why I didn't, I said Pennis,
because it doesn't matter, and it's they're just the hand
(14:44):
and the ball. So Atlanta mass one with Philly Moss one,
they both just have to win the game. Bernie, what
could possibly go wrong?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Well, the good news is Kirk Cousins is really good
when it doesn't matter. So I think you're good. I
think you're good. He's mister October. I think think I
think you're you're good. I'm not a I don't like
back in the Falcons, but I'll make an exception tomorrow.
I'm with you. So you've given us the best bet
with respect to a prop bit and scam scattable. What's
(15:12):
the best side you like on Sunday?
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Yeah, let's go with the And by the way, if
you ask me for what's the bet I like the most,
it almost always will be a prop. I just bet
twenty two props as I was running around the valley.
You know, besides, I bet zero Bernie. But if you
want to bet his side New Orleans Saints plus three
and a half, I get it. You know you can
get plus four and a half at DraftKings. That is
an outstanding wager. Tampa Baker, what's left to them? Mike
(15:36):
Evans injured? Now you know a bookwa Their star rookie
wide receiver had a hamstring issue. They're saying he's one
hundred percent. I am not so optimistic. Everyone else is injured,
Bucky Irving is injured, Baker's banged up. I think it's
gonna be a really close game. I will take the
plus three and a half. Obviously, four and a half
at DraftKings is the way to go, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Though, Yeah, actually jumped down that in the send off
line plus four and a half. I'm impressed with what
Kellen Moore has done. He can coach the Saints play hard,
and he's got a lot out of Spencer Rattler, and
you got the classic divisional dog at home. And you're right,
Tampa Bay. It was just a matter of time for
those injuries caught up with them. You've also got a
(16:20):
quarterback prop on the dock at this week.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
Yeah, So the Dallas Cowboys have no defense and they're
playing the Denver Broncos and bon Nicks, and the sports
books are aware Dallas can't stop anyone, and they have
set bo Nix's total pass yards at two forty three
and a half. Now, Bernie, you're probably not a big
quarterback prop better, but two boys three and a half
is like a that's like a Stafford number, that's close
(16:45):
to a Dack number, that is not a bon Nix number.
Where I'm pretty confident the Broncos are gonna be like,
don't screw it up, Nix and just hand the ball
off over and over to Dobbins. I never be two
forty three in any universe unless the Broncos are losing
and they're favored in this game. So under two forty
(17:06):
three and a half.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
I'm talking with Steve Physic five, the only two time
winner of the prestigious Hilton now Westgate Super Contest. You've
also got a running back and wide receiver prop, so
why't you knock them out and find Fedal.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
Yes, so we'll go with DK Metcalf. You know, it's
interesting he's playing green Bay. Green Bay plays as slow
as slow can be, and that limits everybody's yards throughout
the game.
Speaker 6 (17:33):
You know.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
So I looked at DK, who's having a pretty good year,
but he has not gotten more than five catches all
year long ago. Isy able to get Metcalf under fifty
eight and a half just too good not to go
ahead and invest in. You know, I gave you back
to the running backs. I went ahead and gave you
a scataboo to go under at fifty six and a half.
Let me give you one more here. I'm sorry. I'm
(17:57):
going through Aline as I because I bet like fifteen
of them. I'll give you Dobbins over. I'll give you
one over for Denver. So I do think that Denver
will rely heavily on the run. Game in Dallas is
a seed against running backs. So Dobbin's over sixty six.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
And a half. All right, sure enough? Now, Tomort, Well,
it's we're already in Sunday most of many of our markets,
so Sunday is National tight ends Day. So I'm guessing
you got perhaps a little extra incentive to be looking
you played some tight end prop overs on Sunday? Am
I wrong?
Speaker 5 (18:34):
This is the most ridiculous thing ever because you would
think it's a billion dollar industry, right, and so the
last thing we're gonna do is get It's like an
uber each commercial. It's like the last thing we're gonna
do is get caught up on the hype and feed
the tight end more and then bone Schultz touchdown. Let's
like script it. It's a reminder to script extra play.
So dald and Schultz, Yeah, you go ahead, look for
(18:57):
him to I don't have the odds in front of
me latest number, but yes, to score a touchdown for
Houston to go over. And I'm going to make a
bold prediction. If you bet every big name tight end,
I'm going to define big name as a guy that's
lined to thirty five yards or more. So you know
the Kelseys of the world. Yes, to score a touchdown
and over for your reception yards. I think it's the
(19:17):
rare case. I like unders normally. I think you're going
to cast sixty percent of your tickets playing these guys
over their reception yards, and I think half of them
are going to get touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Sorry, with Steve Fik to physic five, it would not
be a physic five pays if we didn't do our
lightning round, our lightning round fun and go over some
of these games and I'll set them up and just
give me your thoughts in sort of lightning around fashion.
So let's jump this Sunday night the Bears. I'm not
(19:47):
sold on the Bears. I don't care what anybody says,
but they visit Baltimore looks like Noel Lamar Jackson. Now,
interestingly enough is the Bears lead the NFL and takeaways
with sixteen and margin turnover margin plus eleven. Real Kwan
Smith back on the field against his old team, the Bears.
I feel, even with Tyler Huntley, like this is a
(20:10):
get right game for the Baltimore Ravens. Am I wrong,
You're right?
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Baltimore's one in five. They need the game like blood.
The Bears are four and two with incredibly phony wins,
enclicting it twenty five to twenty four back to back
weeks when against teams like the Raiders. The Raiders, for
God's sake, Yeah, that they got completely outplayed by So yeah,
a whole lot of running for Baltimore. Baltimore's wins the game.
(20:37):
That means they're the right side last two and a half.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Yeah, that one was six and a half four days ago.
So you talked about a go ahead.
Speaker 7 (20:46):
Was it right?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Yes, and it was a hybrid line. It would have
gone up to seven and a half if Lamar had played,
but Lamar wasn't even going to be healthy. So the
team will rally around Huntley.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
I agree with you, and I think you're going to
get a nef for it out of their defense. They
had their best defensive effort last week against the Rams.
Let's stay on Sunday night, a game I'm really looks
forward to seeing Green Bay at Pittsburgh. Josh Jacobs has
two or more touchdowns in three straight games. Meanwhile, Aaron
Rodgers can become only the fifth quarterback in history to
(21:19):
beat every single team in the National Football League. If
he beats his old team, the Packers. I actually like
the Steelers here, Fez catching points at home your thoughts.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
As does everyone else. Because the Steelers were plus three
and a half, they've been bet down to plus three,
and even at plus three they were a top five
consensus play in the circum millions, which, by the way,
I have done terribly this year, Bernie. But I concur
I think it's gonna be a really close game. Pittsburgh
ten days. I love teams off the mini by when
(21:49):
they had a bad game on Thursday, nobody gets any
time off and they get the focus for ten days.
By contrast, the Bengals, you know, when they beat Pittsburgh Thursday,
they're like, hey, game balls, all right, you guys, take
the next three days off. Not as good a situation.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Let's go to Monday night where Washington no Jaden Daniels.
You'll have Marcus Marioto behind center for the Commandos they
visit Kansas City. Don't look now, Fizz, Chiefs are five
to one favorites to win the Super Bowl. They are
the favorites. Meanwhile, Washington allowing almost five yards per carry
on the ground. The Chiefs look very buttoned up. You're
(22:26):
laying a huge number any thoughts on this game.
Speaker 5 (22:29):
I want to make an extremely ridiculous statement. Washington can
win this game outright, okay, and here here's why. Because
Kansas City easiest win ever against the Raiders thirty one nothing,
the Raiders only run thirty plays, and Andy Reid is
bad in back to back games. In general, teams are
bad off sutout wins. Remember how the Chiefs when they
(22:54):
went fifteen and two wouldn't win any games by margin.
They would just coast knowing they were the better team.
I think we're going to see that on Monday night.
I think it's going to be a war. I could
only bet Washington, even with Mariota Washington as their weapons back.
This is not a gimme game for Casey.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Can Washington stop anybody on defense? Though, that's the issue.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Couldn't stop anyone last year and they were in the
NFC title game.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Okay, okay, that's an excellent rejoinder. Let's move on. Denver
comes home. The host of Dallas Cowboys are a lot
of fun to watch, in my opinion, Number one in
points per game, number one in the yards per game,
but thirtieth in defense. Give it up to Dak Prescott.
I've dogged him over the years. I'm not this year.
(23:39):
I'm tipping my cap to Dak Prescott. Four games in
a row with three or more pass touchdowns. But Denver,
this has to catch up with him at sunpoint. I'm
not saying it's going to Sunday two wins. When trailing
by fourteen or more points in the fourth quarter and
the Broncos are fresh off an eighteen point deficit in
the fourth quarter, comeback. I gotta tell you, Uh, they've
(24:00):
beaten Dallas seven times in a row. But I feel
like Denver has been whistling through the graveyard a little bit.
Could you see the cowboys hanging this number or even
winning out right face.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
Whistling in the graveyard calling out the girl friends? A
good reference there. The I'm going to talk about math,
boring math here, Denver was minus three and I would
have whistled Denver minas three and talked about how you
were styling with that bet. And here's why, Bernie, because
if you laid minus three, I think you would have gone.
(24:33):
If you would have bet at one hundred times, you
would have gone fifty wins, forty losses, ten ties, so
the ties out that's fifty five point five percent. That's
as good as it gets for a pro better fifty
and forty. But now Denver's laying three and a half.
And guess what those ten tis become losses. They make
a bet like this, one hundred times you go fifty
(24:53):
and fifty, you pay the big and you lose. So
the number got away from you. I have. I think
you make an ext one case for Dallas getting down ten,
coming in the back door and losing by three.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
All right, So this next game I'm really conflicted on
because you never like to lay a touch down on
the road. Although just last week over Dom, de marcos
I told Jeff whitelog I respect a lot that you
could possibly take Tennessee plus the seven points in New
England's going to kill them, And he said, wow, that's
your third game in a row on the road, bubbla. Well,
(25:26):
it turns out grabbing Tennessee and then seven points was
a fool's Errand Okay, I don't want to grab Caroline
in the seven points, but I'm afraid to lay them.
Sean McDermott and Buffalo eight and no coming off of bye,
and the Bills are looking to avoid their first three
game losing streak and I don't know how long. But
what's interesting the Panthers are looking to win their fourth
(25:46):
straight for the first time in seven years. Andy Dalton
will start for the Panthers. He can still play a
little bit. I'm very conflicted about this game, although I'm
afraid I'm gonna look up in Buffalo be smoking them.
Your thoughts.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
So the book on Carolina when young was quarterback is
that he was really playing well at all and not
good on the road. And I wonder they can't just
beat the quarterback. I think it's true for the entire team.
So the fact, I mean, Buffalo needs the game like blood.
But boy, if there was one teaser leg, I'd be
very careful with them. I wouldn't go to war with
(26:19):
Buffalo can lose this game out right. They remember they
got crushed by Atlanta on the road. Carolina four and three,
first time in a long time Carolinas in confidence in
some home field, I would leave Carolina and.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
I don't know that I believe in transitive property in
the NFL. But Carolina beat Atlanta thirty to nothing.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
With the crazy cork screwing kickoffs were basically Atlanta started
every position at Atlanta.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Carolina beats Atlanta thirty to nothing, Atlanta beats Buffalo, and
then Buffalo beats It's like you beat me and chess,
I beat Billy Bardi, but Billy Barty beats you. You
can't swear to this stuff out.
Speaker 5 (26:59):
Well, you know, but that doesn't happen in chess because
there's almost no variance. I know, I was a state
runner up in high school's Caroline does when they kick off,
by the way, they they have mastered the kickoff and
that's yeah, and that really a little intengibles like that
make it a lot easier to cover seven and a
half points.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
No, it's true, it's true. These kickers are getting smarter.
They're dropping them inside the five. It's like it's like
a nine iron shot a wet shot though.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
Wow, But but I'm sorry, but they don't hit a
nine r you know what they hit. They hit like
a spinning ugly like like like shanked three iron.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
That's really the green wedge, sixty degree wedge. Yeah, they
lost it. Yeah, I don't have any good analogies and no.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
No, No, it's not lost it. It's a line drive,
and the reason being you want to make it really
hard for the kid for the kick returner to catch it.
You want them quirkscrewing and spinning.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Some of them do that, but I've seen a few
lost it too.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
That thing is not a good idea. We want to
hit the ugly. The line drive.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Ones fair enough, fair enough, I got to brush up
on my kicking. That's good kicking knowledge. We're gonna have
to call you, Steve zig John Stenerot because allowed to
move until. I hate it. It's the dumbest thing I've
ever seen. I hate it. Go back to the original.
Come on, that's a conversation for a different day. Finally,
(28:17):
last game, I want to talk about the forty nine ers,
and they're doing exactly what I thought they would do.
They again, they have the DNA. They visit Houston. All
four Texans losses are by one score Houston. The Texans
have the distinction of having the number one defense in
terms of points allowed, but they have a losing record.
(28:39):
So you look at this game. Now, Niners, fresh off
of solid win, Semac going bananas, and they travel to Houston.
They're catching two and a half. Do you like a
side here? Do you have a thought?
Speaker 6 (28:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (28:52):
I do like the Texans against You know what, you
should really have your producer Q up by general public
tenderness because the Niners entire team is tender from all
of the injuries that they've had.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Well, that hasn't stopped him. This This linebacker I can't
even name his name that replaced Fred Warner last week
play played his mind off and Mac Jones, who I
always believed could be a capable more than capable NFL
quarterback in an NFL game because you can read a
defense unlike justin fields. I mean, these guys are getting
(29:25):
it done.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
I think it's the falling start. When Warner went down
the whole way and Botha was already down, the whole
team rallied. It's unsustainable.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
That's what it was for one day. No, it's unsustainable.
I'm not gonna argue with that. At some point they're
going to have their come up. And by the way,
I'm gonna break down row. Do you have any thoughts
whatsoever on the Jets Bungles Sunday?
Speaker 5 (29:46):
You know what, the Bengals were laying two and a
half just last week in the look ahead. Now it's
so so. Now it's sixth. Did the Bengals just just
win by forty points? That did did Borrow come back?
Speaker 8 (29:58):
No?
Speaker 5 (29:58):
They had They beat the Stewers by three. The Jets
have been terrible all year long, so how are we
going to really move their power ratings much by one
bad game? Remember the Jets.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Just remember the Bengals actually have an offense and Joe
Flacco can still spin it. Justin fields fourteen and thirty
six is a starter. Here's the narrative out of New York.
They have to start justin fields. They would be rather
be starting to Rob Taylor justin fields fourteen and thirty
six as a starter, all in twenty six when his
opponent s goes twenty points or more. But I digress fast.
We only got about two minutes. But I cannot let
(30:32):
you go. One of the most learned men on multiple subjects,
I would like to get your thirty thousand foot perspective
on the news that came out of the NBA this
week with respect to this betting saga.
Speaker 5 (30:48):
Oh my goodness, you're not going to like my take.
Nobody does. I am convinced that there are things going
on that are way way, way more rampant than people
would ever believe because everyone that gets caught. It's like
America's stupidest criminals. Like you watch American Greed, and everyone
can embezzle the fifty thousand. When they embezzle the fifty million,
(31:10):
they get caught. And I just think it would be
as easy peasy for like a college ref Bernie could
literally just call a whole bunch of fouls or swallows
whistle and call very few and it would impact the
total about five points. What they everyone gets wrong is
that they set up they don't have a network to
set this up, and they feel like they have to
win every game. You know what, It's okay, you don't
(31:32):
have to win every bet if you win fifty eight
percent of your bets. Think about how easy it would
be for a player to just say I'm going to
shoot seven three pointers tonight and another night I'm only
going to shoot four and is over unders one and
a half. I mean, no one would ever notice it.
But then what happens is these players are like deep
and dead or whatever, and then they have to Like
in the movie Color Money, the Art of the Dump,
(31:53):
Tom Cruise talking to the veteran there. You got to
make it look like you're making the shot, and hey,
sometime's going to go in. And that's just the way
it is.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
So if I interpret your dissertation there, you're basically implying
that when they peel back the onion, this is going
to be far larger and far more reaching than people realize.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
Yes, And the best comp I can give you is tennis.
All these one hundred and fifty eighth ranked tennis players
in the world that have been barred for life because
they can't make a living you know, doing that, and
they can make more money through being dishonest. And I
really think not that players making fifty million a year,
but a player making four hundred thousand a year, there's
(32:36):
or a ref there's just too much incentive out there.
And I really I think that they should make the
limits on props for players like that much much lower,
not for most people, but for every person.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
And I think in terms of individual props, maybe you
can't bet the owners anymore. You're going only be a
the overs. But we'll talk about this next month. Fez
that says, if I have a monthly feature, that's great stuff.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Joy your son just make the limits one hundred dollars, Bernie,
and then everything will be on the up and up.
No one's gonna cheap for one hundred dollars.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
Yes, fair enough. I'm gonna send a letter to our congressman.
Have a good Sunday, my friend.
Speaker 5 (33:11):
Always a pleasure. Thank you so much, Bernie. Have a
great weekend.
Speaker 2 (33:14):

We are nineteen minutes away from the midnight hour. You
already know what one of the top it's gonna be.
I'll set it up and what I want to hear
from you with regard to the NBA betting Scandalsaga, whatever
you want to call eight seven seven nine nine six
sixty three six nine, eight seven, seven, nine to nine
(33:55):
on Fox. Nineteen minutes away from the midnight hour. From
where I live here in Vegas. It's midnight in nineteen minutes.
Maybe same with you, but it's the midnight hour, which
means you get the last word. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We
coverany live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio studios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back of the Bernie
(34:16):
Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio, twelve minutes away from what
promises to be an incredibly spirited and interesting and provocative
midnight hour eight seven seven nine nine six six three
six nine eight seven, seven, nine to nine on Fox.
Warm your fingers up. We want to hear from you.
(34:37):
The midnight hour is upon us, all right. As you
know by now, there were multiple indictments file Thursday in
federal court concerning allegations of illegal gambling by current and
former NBA players. Now, it's been reported this has the
potential to become one of the biggest scandals in American
(34:58):
sports because it's a a complex case lots of moving parts.
Later on the show, I'm going to break it down
who's involved, how they're implicated, what the specifics are of
such a legal activity. But think about this. Uh you
know last week we said, hey, Tuesday night, the NBA
(35:18):
tips it off, But that's not the headline. Instead, the
headline is NBA coaches and players and ex players are
being investigated. And frankly, I'm curious how this affects the
perception of the NBA product. And like I said earlier,
any way, you slice that the optics alone undermine the
integrity of this institution. What I want to hear from you,
(35:40):
folks tonight eight seven, seven nine nine, six sixty three
sixty nine, eight seven, seven, nine and nine on Fox
Midnight Hour is what was your knee jerk reaction when
you heard this? And I know some people are going
to want to say, give their thoughts about whether there
should be gambling in sports, or this or that or what,
you know, the tip of the ice. Per Fine, you
(36:02):
can get some commentary to try to try to be succinct,
but I really want your knee jerk reaction because I'll
tell you what mine was. Mine was I was wrong?
Why was I wrong because in twenty eighteen when PASPA
was overturned, that was a Professional and Amateur Sports Protection
Act in nineteen ninety two that George Bush put in.
(36:22):
It was overturned by the Supreme Court May twenty eighteen,
which basically opened the door. It took it out of
federal hands. And only at that point only two states,
Delaware and Nevada, were the states you could bet legally.
So when this became regulated, and now all of a sudden,
there's thirty eight states where you can bet legally and
(36:43):
it's rampant. And how convenient do you have Lebron and
Kevin Hart doing commercials during NBA games and ESPN might
be reporting on how severe this is, and meanwhile they're
advertising their betting app in the corner. Fine, this is
the word we're living in my knee jerk connection. I
was wrong. I did not know that all hell would
(37:04):
break loose like this. I thought there would be guardrails.
But in fact, later in the show, I'm going to
give you a history of the gambling hullabalooes that have
taken place just since twenty eighteen, all the players suspended,
all the things that have happened there's been about a
dozen of them. Yeah, already. So I was wrong. It's
(37:26):
crazier now than it was before. And you might have
people going to jail or not. And you got a commissioner,
Adam Silver, who looks like he really doesn't know what
to do. Not like Pete Roselle in nineteen sixty three
when JFK was assassinated, he canceled the NFL the following
week and made a command decision. He later regretted it
for his own reasons. Roger Goodell seems decisive. I remember
(37:48):
Peter Euberoth was a very decisive commissioner. You know, the
prior commissioner for the NBA was very decisive. David Stern,
I don't know where Silver goes. He says, he's deeply disturbed.
So and I'm curious what the internal dialogue is behind
the Ivory Tower. This is not good. There's nothing good
(38:11):
that's going to come out of this. And I don't
know how far reaching it is. We've heard the story
is this is a tip of the iceberg, this tip
of this beer. It may very well be. I don't know.
And I'll give you Tim Donnohy's bull prediction later and
you know all about him, So just give me your thoughts.
Don't overthink it. What was your knee jerk reaction when
you heard this? I just told you what mine was. Secondly,
(38:36):
the NFL is in a growth mode like no other
league I've ever seen. When Roger Goodell took over in
two thousand and six, I believe it was Paul Taglia
who he said his goal was to grow it to
a twenty five band dollar league. They're on their way. Well,
guess what the next frontier is. Sauny Arabia wants to
host an NFL game, and they're making moves already. They're
(39:00):
hosting a major flag football tournament next March in which
Tom Brady and Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey and they're
gonna all play in and coaches. It's gonna be coached
by Pete Carroll and Sean Payton and College Dan antcetera.
So there's gonna be a flag football classic at the
Kingdom Arena and riad sad it. You know, in March
and twenty twenty six. They also want to host a
(39:23):
real NFL game. There, are you cool with that? I'm
not one of these sanctimonious people who tries to play god.
I know a lot of people were pissed off about
this comic thing in Saudi Arabia. And if you don't
like it, you're welcome on the show. I want to
hear what you got to say. So eight seven, seven,
nine and nine one Fox eight seven seven, nine nine
six six three sixty nine. I want what's your knee
jerk reaction when you heard about the NBA betting indictments
(39:45):
and what are your thoughts? Are you cool if the
NBA wants or the NFL wants to play an international
game you don't like they do in London and other
cities in Saudi Arabia. Let's hear from you. It's time
the midnight Hour and Fox Sports Radio and Bernie Fraddle Show.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
It's right you heard the man Berry Final Show keeps
rolling right along. We're coming to line from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas. Take you up
to three am Pacific, six am. Just getting started, and
as you know, we have a very salacious, provocative pair
of subjects tonight for the midnight Hour. The NBA world
(40:27):
was shook to the core because instead of Opening Night
on Tuesday being the headline, no, You've got NBA coaches, players,
ex players all being investigated. And obviously this is an
optic that I believe very much undermines the integrity the
entire institution. You don't know what, you don't know, nobody knows.
Nothing was as tip of the iceberg as it going
(40:48):
to go further. Well, we'll see, I guess. And then
also the NFL is being pursued by Saudi Arabia. How
do you feel about that going to be football next March?
Some big names would be playing, but they want a
real football game there too, like they have in London
and some of the other international cities. It's time for
(41:08):
the midnight hour. Let's let's light the scandal. Stephen Los
Angeles joins us to start the show. Steve get it started.
Speaker 8 (41:15):
What do you say, Bernie, So your first topic the
the scandal. I have to say that I'm not surprised,
and I tend to go along with what Steve Haasik
had to say. I've been around corruption in this in
(41:42):
this world. Put it like that, and you know, for many,
many years, and nothing like this doesn't surprise me. I
think there's a lot of people in high places that
have been maintaining the Sergeant sols in Hogan's Heroes attitude.
(42:04):
For whoever is old enough to remember that show.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
It's a reflection of the times. I accept your premise.
What are your thoughts, Steve about the NFL game being
played in Saudi Arabia.
Speaker 8 (42:19):
I'm not a real big fan of Saudi Arabia governmentally,
and that kind of goes hand in hand with the
financial status of the royal family of Saudi Arabia, So
(42:40):
I'm just not a fan of it.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
All right. Thanks a lot, Steve, appreciate your candor, you
got to the point, and thanks for starting the show
off tonight. I understand why people wouldn't be surprised. However,
the part that shocked me a bit. Come on now,
when you've got potentially the mafia involved, or the crime
four of the five crime families, and how the FBI
said the poker games were rigged using pretty elaborate technology,
(43:09):
That's that that surprised me. Jim in Massachusetts, welcome in, Jim.
How are you? Let's heard of your thoughts?
Speaker 9 (43:15):
He pretty good?
Speaker 5 (43:16):
Bernie.
Speaker 10 (43:17):
Uh, this betting thing is huge parenting. It's huge. First
of all, Still he doesn't know how well I'm the
investigation is going and going on. He doesn't know all
that it's involved. And you know the government, they don't
go out and arrest everybody until they got all their
you know, try don't row. And I think I think
(43:38):
they're just looking for some of these guys to roll.
And it's it's going to be way way bigger than
anybody thinks. You know, I just read in the paper
out this way, Jalen Brown says something, Well, you know,
the Lee got to prepare guys, you know, for stuff
like that. You're a grown up, Joe.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
And they do they do that.
Speaker 7 (43:55):
That's the stuff.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Dumbest comment forgive me, Jim, stay right here here. They
have more symposiums and Carters has pills. What do you
prepare the guys?
Speaker 10 (44:05):
Well, I'm just going by what Jacob.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
I'm not I'm not barking to you. I just think
Jelan Brown.
Speaker 10 (44:11):
Yeah, but the thing is the thing is these guys
are making zillions and they're accessible, you can because of
where they come from. You know, they never had anything.
Then all of a sudden they got a zillion dollars
and during this thing is huge thing.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
So your kneection was, this is going to be huge.
Speaker 10 (44:31):
Oh, it's gonna be huge, Jimmy mean.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
You think more more names are gonna come out, more
big names, more Oh yeah, oh.
Speaker 10 (44:39):
Yeah, people are gonna roll on people. It's gonna be
it's gonna be uply. I think you know it's.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
The NFL, Saudi Yeah.
Speaker 10 (44:47):
No, not Saudi Arabia. I don't even want them going
to England to play. I don't even want to go
into Island whereverwhere else they go. You know, NFL is
that that's ours boy, you know you want to see
it come here. You know, why would those guys want
to go there play at two hundred and fifty degree heat? Well,
why would they want.
Speaker 9 (45:04):
To do that?
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Well, so it's money, my friend. I mean by growing
the game internationally, the NFL has grown exponentially, and Saudi
Arabia has got deep pockets, and so he saw what
they did with live golf. So that's that's sort of
the answer, which I know you already know.
Speaker 10 (45:21):
Okay, Bernie flying from flying from Boston to LA five
hours way different than you know, an eleven thirteen hour trip.
Speaker 2 (45:30):
You know that's fair. But that they've played an NBA
game there, and then you know, the NBA and China
very similar. Similar. You're not wrong anything else, Jim, anything else?
Speaker 10 (45:40):
Yeah, one last thing, Kelly will not be coking LSU.
Speaker 9 (45:44):
That yip.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
Yeah, that's so you will not be in LSU. Another
news water is what? Yeah, I'm going to talk about
that later in the show. Jim, thanks as always appreciated.
Buddy Kirk in Ohio joins the Bernie Frattle Show. Kirk
is issued for first time calling.
Speaker 11 (46:01):
I believe it is Bunny.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
Well, welcome in. Nice to hear from you. What do
you got for us?
Speaker 11 (46:07):
I got a couple of things. I got an idea
to make the NBA better, But I'll talk about the
gambling thing first.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Go ahead.
Speaker 11 (46:15):
I grew up going to Cincinnati Royals basketball games. It
was a long time ago, and I think the reason
people watch the NBA is because the athleticism that the
players display when they're out. They're really getting it. And
you know, Bernie, I don't care if they're fixing games
(46:36):
or not.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
I really don't, Okay, But the real thing, I want
to get you because I want to get to all
the callers. Kirk, what was the knee jerk reaction. What
was your first impression when you heard this news Thursday?
Speaker 12 (46:46):
It's about time?
Speaker 2 (46:47):
No big deal, okay, all right, listen, I respect all
opinions here Saudi Arabia. Are you down if the NFL
decides to play a game in Saudi Arabia?
Speaker 11 (46:57):
You know you can't. You can't stop it. The guys
on the team, the quitting, the managers, the logistics, if
that's what they want to do, you know whatever. Here's
my idea to make the NBA.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
Go ahead real quickly.
Speaker 11 (47:17):
First of all, the three point line is only activated
with three minutes to go in the first and second quarters.
At halftime, you come out. The three point line is
activated the whole third quarter. In the fourth quarter you've got.
(47:41):
The free point line is only lit with three minutes
to go. In the meantime, Birdie, to make more action,
all dunks should be worth three points. That promote more
inside out action.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
All right, appreciate it. I appreciate it, Kirk. Thank you
for your time, and thanks for taking the time to
calling tonight as the first time calling. Just hear it
from you again, Carl and Vegas is a regular Carl
dying to hear what you gotta.
Speaker 13 (48:10):
Say, man, I want's burning. Let's let's get into it,
because I said something last night on the F and
A show and I wanted to touch on it again
with you because you might guy, and you give it
to me straight. I honestly think that a lot of
these guys are missing the key factor, which is and
(48:32):
And first off, I was flabbergasty, not in the way
that the rest of the world is like taken back
and appalled by it. I knew this was going on.
We live in the day and age of modern technology,
you guys, And if we know anything about modern technology
is that everything is tracked and traceable. You did this
type of thing thirty years ago, he probably wouldn't have
(48:53):
got caught. But my key thing is is who snitched?
Speaker 14 (48:58):
Who snitched?
Speaker 13 (48:59):
Somebody didn't get the bottom line, somebody didn't get their money,
and somebody got upset. Then the other point that I
wanted to bring into this, because I said it last
night and I'm gonna say it again, I feel like
the Gilbert Arenas Rachel Nichols thing isn't as big as
what it should be because just a few weeks ago
(49:20):
Gilbert Arenas went to jail or got indicted for illegally
betting and poker games and stuff like that. Rachel Nichols
said something. He tweets back, I'm gonna sue you for defamation. Yeah,
but again right like the earlier poler said, when this
thing actually gets pulled back, I wonder how many other
(49:42):
the major sports leagues are involved in this.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
Well, I'm gonna take a later, Tim, Tim donah, he's
got a thought. Keep one thing in mind, Kyle. These
poker games alone date back to twenty nineteen, and it's
investigation has been going on three years. So the notion
that this is new, it's new to us. Okay, all right,
what do you think about what do you think about it?
NFL game in Saudi Arabia?
Speaker 13 (50:06):
Listen, listen. My grandma used to say something that.
Speaker 14 (50:09):
That you know to be true.
Speaker 13 (50:12):
BS is nothing but chewed up grass from the cow's behind. Okay,
and money talks the rest walks. I'll have the idea
for if you're going to grow the game and you're
gonna get the revenue, get the revenue. It don't have
to be the best game, exactly does. It doesn't even
have to be the greatest game.
Speaker 11 (50:32):
Just get the money.
Speaker 15 (50:33):
Get the money.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
You get it.
Speaker 13 (50:35):
You go move on to the next old deal. I
mean we might see games in Indonesia next. And if
they have the money with the Prince Brunei and and
all the all the royalty that's around the world, if
we can get that money.
Speaker 15 (50:48):
Take it for the mother land, take it to Africa.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
Yeah, not only that, Kyle, They're dying to give it
to us. It's Saudi Arabia. Kyle, always a player. Friend,
your joy, your weekend. H Martin in Orange, California, back
on the show. Welcome in Martin.
Speaker 16 (51:07):
Hey, Bernie, how you doing tonight?
Speaker 17 (51:08):
Man?
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Doing well? By the way I fly. If anybody wants
to know, I'm a little out of it or inactive.
I got hacked pretty good on Twitter, so you won't
see me much on that until Twitter gets it fixed,
and hopefully they will. Sorry to drop that, Martin, go ahead,
you got the floor.
Speaker 16 (51:24):
No, it's okay, Bernie needs your reaction on this whole
poker scandal was man, the Italian mob is still alive
and well that was like my first knee deek reactions.
I'm not a poker player, Bernie, but I've seen rounders
like a thousand times.
Speaker 2 (51:42):
Yeah, Matt Dae yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 16 (51:45):
And one of the main rules is if you can't
spot the fish from the first five minutes when.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
You're you're the fish.
Speaker 16 (51:53):
So I'm just like the things they were using.
Speaker 18 (51:57):
Ear pieces on glasses at trade tables. Mom means like
flappy and juice and threaten Nick, Bernie, I gotta disagree
with you.
Speaker 16 (52:12):
Something good is gonna come.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
Out of this.
Speaker 16 (52:15):
It's gonna be like the best thirty for thirty we've
ever seen.
Speaker 2 (52:19):
The We're gonna have to wait ten twenty years though, yeah.
Speaker 16 (52:23):
Or Adam Saylor movie.
Speaker 18 (52:25):
I mean, it's gonna be great.
Speaker 16 (52:26):
I just can't wait to see it.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
It's a great call, Martin. If you being quickly on
the Saudi Arabia and the NFL, I'm.
Speaker 16 (52:32):
Gonna I'm gonna date my show right now, or Bernie,
and I'm gonna tell you this Sunday rabything.
Speaker 8 (52:37):
It bugged me.
Speaker 16 (52:37):
I don't care if it's golf, I don't care if
it's a comedy festival. I don't care if they want
to buy the super Bowl. This government funded the people
who did nine to eleven, and I'll never forgive that.
Doug bless America, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (52:50):
I love you, Martin, strong stuff. I'll tell you what
I think. It's only a second time calling the show,
but he's bringing it, bringing it all right. We're gonna
get to all of you. Michael and North Carolina, Jane
in Colorado, Tony and Miami, Alan and Saint Louis, Stephen
Kansas City. We're going to get to all of you,
and I really want to hear what you got to say.
(53:12):
I'm Bernie Fratle. We are company line from Las Vegas,

Speaker 2 (53:32):
All right, we're back at the Bernie Frattles Show Fox
Sports Radio. It's been a strong midnight hour so far.
We continue. We head out to North Carolina. We're joined
by Michael in North Carolina. Michael, thanks to your patients.
What have you got yes tonight?
Speaker 19 (53:47):
Hey, thanks for having me. My knee jerk reaction with
the gambling scan Chandle in the NBA was that it's
probably a lot worse than we think. I think it's
been a lot more corrupt for a long time than
we know. I don't think the referee scandal got as much,
(54:07):
you know, it didn't. It wasn't as big as it.
Speaker 2 (54:10):
Should have been.
Speaker 19 (54:12):
My thought was, I hope Lebron didn't make money off
this guy he's connected to those letting people now when
he's not playing games, because we know he loves money,
we know he loves Vegas. But you know, he's also
done such a good job of being scandal free throughout
his career too, so he deserves a lot of credit
for that. So I don't know, you know, And that's
(54:33):
unlike our other greatest player of all time, right, Michael Jordan,
who had the gambling scandal. And I wonder if it's
worked during the time taking another look back at that
and looking, I mean, that's just an example of how
long this has been an issue in the league. I
always had this is and I'm not an expert, but
I just felt like intuition about I wonder if he
(54:55):
had a huge gambling debt and somehow the Jordan.
Speaker 6 (55:01):
Yeah, And then.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Michael Francisi spoke out about that. He said, now Jordan,
best of his knowledge, Jordan is issue free because he
has too much money. Will these guys get into trouble
is for the own money they can't pay, and it
starts in there. But that's a conversation. I Michael, I
appreciate your perspective. It's a good one. I want to
(55:22):
make sure I get to go ahead. You got one
quick point, then I want to get to the Saudi
Arabia if you got a.
Speaker 19 (55:26):
Minute, because I never get on the rate. I never
got to mention it on about the NBA. But my
best example of a game that seemed rigged during that
ninety three playoffs when that scandal was happening with Jordan's
my favorite player of all time, Elijah One on the Rockets,
is in Game seven against the Sonics, and there's like
(55:46):
fifteen to twenty calls if you visit that game that
if they don't go to Sonics way when they win
in overtime, and then the Sonics go on to lose
to the Suns, and the sun we never got to
see Elijah One versus Jordan. If you look it up,
Jordan and says they had no answer form. If Rockets
win that, then they're.
Speaker 10 (56:05):
The one three, feeting.
Speaker 19 (56:06):
In the nineties, winning the next two, and it's a
whole different story. I just wanted to because nobody ever knows.
Speaker 2 (56:11):
Okay, I'll tell you what Michael. I will say this.
It's highly speculative, but it's the kind of thought provoking
comment I like to invoke people to invoke on this segment.
So I respect your thought. It's well crafted and I
remember that. And of course Michael temporarily retired in October
of eight ninety three. Quick thoughts, Saudi Rabi would you
(56:33):
like to see an NFL game played? There are your thoughts?
Speaker 19 (56:36):
I mean, if they're still killing people for homosexuality, I
don't think we can support that. You know, there's so
much immorality in that country that was built after the
Ottoman Empire was defeated in World War One by the
British Empire. Saying, hey, Saudi family of marauders want to take.
Speaker 10 (56:56):
Control of this country.
Speaker 19 (56:57):
Very crubs have been corrupt from the beginning on a support.
Speaker 10 (57:00):
It if you get it.
Speaker 19 (57:01):
If you really want to know about the Saudi Arabi,
you got to get into the CIA. And if we
can't even talk about that, and then you got to
get into the FBI and that's the whole other part of.
Speaker 2 (57:08):
This enough so it doesn't sit well with you. I
appreciate you taking the time to call the night, Michael.
Please don't be a stranger. Jeane and Colorado's out next
Welcome into the Bernie Fradershow.
Speaker 7 (57:19):
Hi, How you doing fine?
Speaker 20 (57:22):
I just got back from a ball arena, so I'm
sitting in my driveway. You wanted my first knee jerk
reaction to the gambling thing.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
Yes, that's what they're getting from everybody, is what?
Speaker 20 (57:35):
And I just don't know what in the not flatworth
Earth world anyone is surprised by and why Adam Silver
is bewildered by something that is so obvious with all
the commercials. You go into a sports far to watch
a game, nobody's watching the game I'm having. I'm a
five foot tall, seventy year old woman. I'm having to
(57:57):
tell the guy next to me the place because he's
too busy.
Speaker 2 (58:00):
The gambling, well, no, there's no question gambling is endemic
in our society. There's no question that it's actually enhanced
to the popularity of these leagues. The issue here is
you got players allegedly helping set up poker games where
people were built out of seven million dollars. You got
players leaving games early so their posse can win a
(58:20):
two hundred thousand dollars bet. What's in it for them?
So that's I think the surprise factor, not that it's happening,
that to the level that's happening and the big names involved.
But your point's taken. You're not surprised.
Speaker 20 (58:32):
Oh no, I'm not surprised because I've lived on It's
always fair enough.
Speaker 2 (58:36):
You see where you think you see it all, but
sometimes you see all right. The second issue the NFL
in Saudi Arabia. They've played in eight other countries. What
are your thoughts about Saudi Arabia? They want to pay
big bucks for the NFL to play a game there.
Speaker 6 (58:51):
You know.
Speaker 20 (58:52):
My thought is they want to see a game. They're
welcome to come every year in Sleet one.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
All right. That kind of says it all on call.
I appreciate you taking the time to check in and
and I appreciate all these perspectives. Really good calls. Tony
in Miami, Tony, where the hell you been?
Speaker 6 (59:10):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (59:10):
Sorry, Bernie, you are mister Saturday Live, Saturday Night and
Live and getting in has been difficult, so I'm going
to take responsibility. I kind of gave up after five
minutes of the busy signal, but it's good to hear
from you, and real quick. In the NFL, real quick,
I do not I think if they want to do
(59:32):
preseason stuff there in general, I don't think NFL games.
If you're playing sixteen seventeen, you need to play it
in the States. You know this time it's just too
much on the players and everything football with the way
it works, I think it's great to have meaningless games there.
Speaker 6 (59:49):
But you know, if they want their.
Speaker 7 (59:51):
League in Saudi Arabia and London, let them start their league.
Speaker 2 (59:54):
And yeah, I think I think it's I think it's
a symbiotic relationship. The Goodell's all over it. I think
that this is going to add He wants the league
to be twenty five billion, and this helps him get there.
I'd cynical on my part, but it's also the truth, Tony.
You're not wrong, though, It's like where do we draw
the line? But I really want to get your knee
jerk reaction after Thursday's NBA news All.
Speaker 7 (01:00:13):
Right, number one, Like the lady before, I said, anyone
that is shocked by this probably believes that Oswald, you know,
Nail Kennedy in five different places in Dallas and sixty three.
I mean, obviously everything was going on, and I'm not shocked.
(01:00:37):
I'd be shocked if they didn't find anything, you know,
and I think this is brewing for a while. Yeah,
somebody gave him the white flag to say, okay, let's
do this now because you know, and we're not going
to go on that route. But it's just something that
the NBA, and this goes for all sports.
Speaker 8 (01:00:56):
Now.
Speaker 7 (01:00:57):
No one wants to say this, but this, Bernie, the
sport of betting has now completely overtaken the sport of sports.
So however you look at it, it's and I love
you and I love these guys. You're you're amazing, Bernie.
But sooner or later this just gets you to start
fading into like Sports Betting Radio twenty four to seven.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
You know, go ahead, no, no, you know you're you're
not wrong, You're not wrong to put the key takeaway here.
It's hard. They're already doing that. Some networks are trying
to do that. The key takeaway I take from you, Tony,
and I appreciate your patience and getting in tonight, and
I'll give you the last word. A second is you're
just not surprised. Why are we surprised, even by the
magnitude and the technology and the implications of what's happening,
(01:01:45):
You're just simply not surprised. I mean, hell, we just
had to love. My wife and I were in Paris
last year. I did think give you getting the louver
with a tank, these knuckleheads and the broad daylight. Still,
so I guess what you got the last word. I'm
all over the place. I'm an idiot.
Speaker 7 (01:01:58):
No, no, I am too coming at you in two
or three days, but I will leave you with this
Bernie somewhere around the left ten eleven twelve years when
Kobe kind of faded created out there, he was kind
of the last fashion of you knew the way he played.
It wasn't not a Kobe not but him and the
way that league played when he was there. It's kind
(01:02:20):
of the end of Stern. That wasn't a bubblegum. If
we turned into this kind of Chinese video game emoji,
no one plays defense and somewhere around like I said,
ten eleven years ago, nothing means anything. Everything goes Marvel
action universe. You know, threes threes. Reigned Supreme victor Win
(01:02:42):
Binyama is going to score one hundred and fifty points tomorrow.
But honestly, we look around it to.
Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
Who cares right, Soley, I appreciate you man always. You've
been a long time caller to this segment, and thanks
so much for checking in. Now, Alan and Saint Luis,
welcome back in. You've been a fixture as well. What
do you got for us?
Speaker 17 (01:03:01):
Hey, Bernie, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (01:03:02):
How are you, buddy?
Speaker 17 (01:03:04):
I'm doing fine. As far as the gambling, the gambling
they can confer, I'm not surprised at all. People have
been basketball players have been getting suspended for gambling for
one reason another for a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:03:19):
Then having it. But think about it, think about it.
I'm I'm with you on that. But Chauncey Billups, I
can't say I know Chuncey that well. We used to
see hide to each other going down the hallway. It's
cats an NBA MVP of the finals. It's a head,
a current head coach. Haven't we kind of crossed the
new rubicon there? Allen?
Speaker 17 (01:03:37):
Yeah, Now, I was going to get to that, the
deal with the with the basketball players. I'm not surprised.
Now the Chauncey Billup situation is totally different as far
as you know, rigging poker games there in general, I'm gonna.
Speaker 6 (01:03:51):
Tell you something.
Speaker 10 (01:03:52):
They're the words that I use when it comes.
Speaker 17 (01:03:54):
To that that's dangerous.
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
I mean, you're.
Speaker 17 (01:03:57):
Talking about bilking some some guys out of Vegas of dollars.
And one thing about it, if these alleged families that
was supposed to being tied to this, once you get
into this, it's hard getting out. You know, Charlie Bille
just can't wake up one morning say I'm done with this.
Speaker 10 (01:04:16):
So you know, this is.
Speaker 21 (01:04:17):
This kind of goes beyond what he's doing because once
you once you get connected with some of these mob families,
you know, you know you're actually you're actually tied to them.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
All right, real quickly, Alan, would you like, are you
okay if the NFL plays a game in Saudi Arabia
they're chasing us?
Speaker 17 (01:04:34):
You know, I'm I'm I might. I may be into
the minority, but I'm okay with it. I've heard different
opinions people saying about people dealing with Ta Sardes. Let's
face it, Bernie, if you're talking on the phone right now.
Your carrier probably deals with the Saardies if you drink
a sauty.
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
Yes, yes, yes, yes, you're an excellent point.
Speaker 17 (01:04:58):
Yes, the Saudis and the biggest thing of all. I heard
the other guys saying, God bless America.
Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
But that's great.
Speaker 17 (01:05:06):
But every time you go to the gas station, something
we all do, we deal with the Saudis. So it's
no way of getting around it, is it right? But
it's funny the business. The American citizens we seen to
have a problem with it, but as well as the
business people along with the NFL, they don't seem to
(01:05:27):
have a.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Problem with it.
Speaker 17 (01:05:28):
But you know, sit in our living room, we don't
have big as the dollars coming into our pockets, and
that made the difference.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
So Alan, thanks a lot, man, appreciate you checking and
cover some good ground. I know some folks like to
get a little sanctimonious, but you know what, they also
have their right to their personal feelings. Stephen, Kansas City,
what's happening man.
Speaker 22 (01:05:48):
Hey, Bernie, good show tonight. You know, I kind of
wanted to echo the previous collar there that you know,
I think a lot of people are going to be
prized how this how this thing play is at I
remember seeing some some news items that you don't never,
you don't ever get away from the mafia. That's that's
(01:06:10):
that's the thing is the four families and is your.
Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
Is your take away? Your knee jerk reaction is again,
we're going to be surprised as to how far this
goes the ramifications. Is that fair?
Speaker 22 (01:06:23):
No, I'm I'm kind of shocked that it hasn't gotten
into college.
Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
That's what I'm well, I went for my commentary with
Tim Donnaher's got to say.
Speaker 22 (01:06:32):
That that was my surprise. But but everybody knows what
happened to donahe. I mean, they they got to him
in club in club fed and and chicken winged him.
So so you know, all these guys talk big, you know,
to Chauncey and then and and something that they obviously
got indeed, but it's just comical to me these statements
(01:06:53):
they were issuing at the end of the week saying,
you know, through their attorneys, I mean, they just need
to be quiet, take their punishment. You're not going to
give anybody else.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
Well, eventually that's what's going to happen. But some of
these guys are going to get three or four year senses.
It ain't gonna be fun right right, moving on, because
I love you, man, but I want to make sure
all the callers get in if I can real quickly. Yeah.
Uh football in Saudi Arabia, yes or no?
Speaker 22 (01:07:18):
Well, well, talking about the mafia, you know, the legal mafia.
Roger Goodell of all his mistakes, you know, he needs
to he needs to start fixing the Super Bowl. He
needs to start to start doing a better job of
all he wants is sixty million, sixty million or whatever
expanding is his reach per per year. And I mean,
(01:07:40):
I'm just this is.
Speaker 2 (01:07:41):
Part of it, This is part of that. The end.
They believe the end is just by the means.
Speaker 22 (01:07:46):
So yeah, I'm so. I'm so over everything to do
with the NFL. I think they're poison culturally. So we'll well,
we'll see. But my advice to the NBA guys is
shut up and take take your punishment. Then don't don't
try and rock the boat because you're you're gonna pay.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Thanks Steve Andrew and Bakersfield. What have you got for tonight?
Speaker 23 (01:08:08):
What's up, Bernie h I'd say, let's go Dodgers, keep
your dukes up metaphorically. And my initial reaction to the
gambling thing with the NBA was oh, and Chauncey Billocks, So.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
And you know, would you like to see the NFL
in Saudi Arabia?
Speaker 23 (01:08:34):
Andrew, Well, I don't know if the question would be
are they an ally and then do they have laws
that promote freedom and stuff like that and kind of
an evaluation.
Speaker 17 (01:08:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
All right, listen, I appreciate your patience and hanging online
and your comments, and you hell hold it down there
in Bakerfields, my little city. Uh David, Los Angeles, Bryston, Texas,
Otis and Virginia, Greg and Texas. You'll bring us home
coming up looking forward to what you got to say.
Hang tight. I want to remind everybody with the iHeartRadio app,

(01:09:33):
We're listening to the Bernie Frawdle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, we're back on the Bernie Frawdle Show. We're
wrapping it up by the midnight hour. I want to
get to all five callers remaining for you, hustle. We'll
get to Aulia deve in Los Angeles joint. Just David
looking forward to what you got to say? What do
you got?
Speaker 24 (01:09:49):
Bud Okay's going Bernie good?
Speaker 17 (01:09:53):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (01:09:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 24 (01:09:54):
The NBA, my first initial reaction was good for them.
I didn't like what they were doing here few years back,
the national anthem being played. They didn't want to put
their hands all your hard are turning it back and
Lebron James not criticized in Chinese government but criticizing American government,
So you know what's.
Speaker 13 (01:10:14):
Do it for him?
Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
I love it strong.
Speaker 24 (01:10:18):
And that Saudi Arabia getting the NFL change was they
kind of implicated in those twin towers going down, So no,
they shouldn't get it either.
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
David, really strong call. I know you were patient, you
waited a long time. You get to two excellent points quick.
I always respect your opinion. Thanks so much, David, don't
be a stranger man. Appreciate you. Bryce in Texas a
long time. What do you got for us tonight? Bud?
Speaker 25 (01:10:45):
And the first When I first heard about the gambling stuff,
I guess my.
Speaker 26 (01:10:49):
Only thought is how do the finalist sock of bones
is Adam Silver still have a job when the networks
and everyone else has been over Black working for the
NBA get back on his feet and then he just oh,
I'm deeply concerned about this. No, you're not, dude, You're
not doing anything at all. How much longer is the
(01:11:11):
NBA gonna allow him just to be nothing but a
sack of bone sitting in front of a microphone.
Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
This is strong stuff, all right? Bryce? Wow? Love it
anything on the NFL in Saudi Arabia.
Speaker 26 (01:11:25):
I think if it's like a season opener, I think
it would be cool.
Speaker 25 (01:11:29):
I would much rather see Saudi Arabia make their own
league and turn this flag football tournament into a spring league.
Or retired NFL stars or for like second third strip
guys that never really get to play.
Speaker 10 (01:11:41):
I think that would be much more interesting.
Speaker 5 (01:11:43):
And just make a separate branch from the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
All right, anything's possible in this day and age, as
we can see. Thank you, Bryce appreciated. Hold us in Virginia.
Is this your first time checking into the Bernie Frattle Show.
Speaker 6 (01:11:55):
No, this is my second time. My name's Odell. I'm
calling him from Rendell.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
Okay, I'm sorry, and I thanks for checking in. I'm sorry,
didn't remember. What do you got for his pou?
Speaker 6 (01:12:05):
Yes, I'm poor this Suti Arabia. I think that would
be an excellent thing to you know, boost up money
that Roger the goal that Roger Dedare has playing. I
think soon Saudi Arabia will have a lot of professional teams,
(01:12:26):
ball people, veterans and trying to just open up doors,
you know, to you know, bring the revenue, you know,
bring the revenue up.
Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
So that's that's what I think it's certainly gonna do.
It's gonna bring a hell of a lot of revenue
into the NFL, and that's what's driving this. Uh So
you decided to go the second topic first, which is fine.
What was your knee jerk reaction when you heard these
indictments come down on Thursday, Otis Hotel.
Speaker 6 (01:12:49):
I'm sorry, Well, that right there is like it ain't
puzzling to me. You know, I think Pandora's box and
has already been opened up for years with this gambling
situation in the NBA. But I mean, you got professional players,
excellent players that tied into this, and they are messing
(01:13:11):
up a chance to get into the Hall of Fame.
And I feel like a lot of stuff need to
be tightened and people need to be punished, you know,
even the commissioner.
Speaker 7 (01:13:24):
He needs to he needs to go.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):
Really yeah, I'm not a fan. I'm not a fan otist.
Thanks so much, appreciate you, Odell. I'm sorry, thanks for
checking in second time. Appreciate you. Greg and Texas a
long timer. Take it away.
Speaker 9 (01:13:38):
How's how's it going?
Speaker 27 (01:13:39):
Man?
Speaker 2 (01:13:40):
Good?
Speaker 9 (01:13:42):
Okay, Let's let's go to the gambling scam. And you know,
the NBA is very vulnerable. See that because you only
have ten guys to control, you know, it doesn't take much.
Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
That is that your need? Is that your need jerk
reaction that they're very vulnerable to this more so than
other sports? Is that primarily or.
Speaker 9 (01:14:03):
Absolutely?
Speaker 11 (01:14:04):
Uh?
Speaker 14 (01:14:05):
And then you get to the Saudia situation. You know,
I didn't we cancel.
Speaker 27 (01:14:11):
The All Star Game or something because of the Home
Point Views or whatever it was. You know, it's just
not it's just a money grab to me, Sure it is.
Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
There's no question that that's what's driving it.
Speaker 14 (01:14:27):
Yeah, it's to live in NFL. I mean that's basically
what it'd be. But you know, we've got to get used.
Speaker 9 (01:14:34):
To the dynamic.
Speaker 27 (01:14:35):
It's there there, all the money, money's there, all right,
Well the world is shrunk.
Speaker 2 (01:14:42):
Yeah, and it's all driven by the almighty dollar. That's
the way it's working. Greg, Thanks so much as always, Uh,
Jim and Minnesota will be have the final word on
this subject. If you couldn't get in tonight, I apologize.
I greatly value everybody who takes the time to call
and it it's a bummer when you can't all get in.
(01:15:03):
I like to keep them mid that hour one hour
uh and uh. Hopefully if you didn't get in tonight,
you'll get in next week a gym in Minnesota. What
do you got for us today?
Speaker 15 (01:15:13):
Well, on the gambling thing, Bernie, I think that it's
been a long time coming. But it's it's it's corrupt.
Speaker 27 (01:15:19):
I mean it's it's it's.
Speaker 15 (01:15:20):
Almost like it's almost like the stock market either you
know where you don't know, and if you don't know,
you're the sucker.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
You know. I'm glad you brought that up, because what's
interesting is is this has now basically become the NBA's
version of insadder trading.
Speaker 15 (01:15:35):
Yeah, exactly. And then as far as the Saudi Aradia there,
I mean, with the amount of money they got, they
can pretty much buy whatever they want. Eventually we keep
spending all our money on oil and gas. I mean,
they're gonna want everything anyway, so they're probably gonna end
up going in the NFL some days. So we was like,
you just used to be playing over there.
Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
I think.
Speaker 15 (01:15:53):
I think the way the NFL a lot of work is.
I mean everybody, every team ought to have to play
one game overseas. You know, they had to figure it
out so that we're coming to that.
Speaker 2 (01:16:01):
We we're coming to that because it has in fact worked.
Speaker 15 (01:16:05):
Yeah, that would that would make it more fair for everyone.
You know, just add another bye week at the eighteenth
game and everybody plays one game overseas well.
Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
Every one of these games are sold out, Jim, and
the people go gaga over it, whether it's Brazil, Germany, Ireland, England, Spain,
you name it. Uh, and and uh, and the TV
ratings are there and it's more games to bet, so yeah,
you're not wrong. Anything else.
Speaker 15 (01:16:29):
You got football over here in the morning.
Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
That's right, football in the morning early, all right, thanks
so much. I want to thank everybody who took the
time to call in. Now. We uh we de we
spent most of the subject on the NBA betting scandal,
if you want to call it that for obvious reasons. People.
(01:16:50):
That's you know what, what I think the folks know
the most about and they're the most familiar with.
Speaker 6 (01:16:57):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:16:57):
But what's interesting is I don't know that it's been
well publicized as to the NFL. And by the way,
we got Mark Medina Medina Magic our NBA insider rights
for essentially sports coming up here top of the hour
and at two am, I'm going to give a pretty
substantial commentary on my thoughts and what I know about
(01:17:19):
this whole NBA thing. But here's what has it's been
under reported. Saudi Arabia is expressing very strong interest in
hosting an NFL regular season game, and they've been building
a relationship with the NFL, and it's started by establishing
this Fanatics Flag Football Classic, which will take place in
(01:17:40):
five months, in March of twenty twenty six, and it's
going to include a lot of active and retired NFL players,
big names that you've heard of, like Tom Brady and
Saquon Barkley and Max Crosby and Pete Carroll's going to
be involved. I'm Sean Payton all right. Now. There's been
no agreement finalized, but this audio officials have vehemanly stated
(01:18:02):
that they very much want to be the next host
of an international NFL game. Okay, you're follow in the
footsteps of the UK, Brazil, Spain, Germany. What am I
forgetting Mexico City right on down the line, and so
you can see that their strategy is going to be
(01:18:24):
to attract big names which will attract eyeballs. And just
because they are doing this flag football thing next March,
that's just a precursor. They're not stopping there. They're not
stopping there. Tom Brady had his picture taken with one
of the princes, I believe, and they basically said, you know,
Britain got at, Brazil got a Hopefully Saudi Arabia will
(01:18:47):
be next. Now, the NFL has not really commented specifically
about that. The NFL has always beat their chest on
the international ambitions, but they haven't really commented specifically. The
truth of the matter is the expenses associated creating the
infrastructure for the game. The Saudi Arabia has more than
(01:19:10):
enough money to launch this deal and line everybody's pockets.
So I think my gut feel is I think it's
going to happen eventually. Now it's not on the docket,
but I think I think it's likely to happen. And
that's just where we're at again. Thanks to all the
callers of the Men that hour. I apologize if id
to get short, or I apologize if you weren't able
(01:19:30):
to get on the air. I value your time and
your thoughts and your opinions greatly. Coming up, Keep it locked,
We've got Mark Medina, Medina Magic, NBA. Keep it locked
to Bernie Fraddle Show.
Speaker 1 (01:19:42):
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:19:44):
That's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle or
coming line from the Fox Sports Radio studios here in
Las Vegas. Take up to three in Pacific, six am
Eastern and uh no better time to have this gentleman.
On three simple words, It's that time, Mark Medina Medina
Magic at Fox Sports Radio, NBA Guru, and of course
(01:20:06):
he also writes for Essentially Sports. Mark, I always close
the segment let's see what the news cycle brings us
next week. And we thought we'd be talking about Opening Night,
but that's not the big headline of the week. So
let me start with this question first to quick statement. Look,
anyway you slice it, the optics alone undermine the integrity
(01:20:27):
of the sport. But you know, I thought we'd be
talking about Opening Night, that we're talking about NBA coaches
and ex coaches and players and investigated. What do you
believe is the internal dialogue now in the Ivory Tower
since Adam Silver has said he's deeply disturbed.
Speaker 12 (01:20:46):
Yeah, I think that it's those two words plus a
bunch of exploders. Because this is going to be a
long investigation. I think that it's going to take over
a year. You know, there's now reports mentioned that the
FBI won Sadam Silver and people with the league to
testify about this. You know, to be clear, at this point,
arrests were made, allegations were thrown, but now it has
(01:21:09):
to be settled in the court of law, and these
things take time because all these up people that you mentioned,
Terry Rosier, the Miami heat point guard, the performer Portland
Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, the you know, associate
of Lebron James, They've all maintained that they're innocent. So, uh,
(01:21:32):
there's a lot to unpack with each accusation, but bottom line,
this isn't good for the league.
Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
Well, which sort of leads to my next question, which
is fairly obvious across the fandom of America. What do
you think this does to the integrity and the perception
of the product itself?
Speaker 12 (01:21:50):
Now, well, it's hard to answer only because we don't
know how deeply rooted this is. You know, this could
very well be widespread, you know, as the FBI continues
its investigation. But if this is all it is, I
think that the NBA can contain this and in a
weird way, not that anyone wants it to happen to
(01:22:12):
these three figures, but you can make an argument that,
you know what, for all its imperfections, that showed that
the system worked, that having legalized gambling and regulated they
detected all the unusual patterns, and that's really what happened
with specifically with Terry Rozier, because you know, he's a
(01:22:32):
rotation player, he's not a star player, and there was
a lot of irregular activity about you know, his rotation
minutes and a very meaningless scheme. So I think that
you can make an argument with that, but if it's widespread,
this just shows that it's really hard to contain. So
it's frankly, Bernie, it's hard to answer the question to
(01:22:54):
that only because this investigation. I don't want to say
it's only begun because the FBA. I didn't get to
this point arresting, you know, making these arrest on Wednesday
out of nowhere. This took a lot of time. But
we're in the throes of it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:10):
Well, I believe the investigation has been going on for
a couple of years. Yeah, and we're not just talking
about insider trading as it were, and knowledge of players
not playing and inside information about a player who's point
total bet the under and then he leaves the game
(01:23:31):
nine minutes into the game. But we've also got this
poker game linked to a guy who's a current NBA
head coach. And as I said my opening commentary, how
covered the U four Pistons. Chauncey Billups led the team
to a championship. He was the finals MVP. Now, I
don't know, I don't know. Nobody knows nothing. Okay, everybody
speculating on everything, But when you get to this point,
(01:23:53):
it's got your attention. It's very serious. So it's not
just that it's gambling, and it's not just this has
been going and it's this has now risen to a
new level that the league has to deal with. So
I'm trying to make a distinction here that we've rought
We've crossed a rubicon now where you've got current coaches
allegedly involved. Your thoughts on.
Speaker 12 (01:24:14):
That, Yeah, I mean when we unpack each specific allegation,
there's a lot here, and none of it's acceptable. Terry
Rozier tipping off you know, gamblers about when he's going
to leave the game and try to hit the under
on that and the amount of production that's unacceptable. It's
unacceptable for an associate in Damon Jones to get inside
(01:24:38):
information about Lebron James's availability and then tip that off
to gambles. And with Chauncey Billups allegations, that's that hits
a lot of buttons here because, as you mentioned, he
has been accused of being part of a legal pok
poker game where there's all this technology to detect what
the hands were and they knew all about that. But
(01:25:00):
he was also manipulating games because he was, you know,
tanking to increase the Blazers lottery odds, and with that
was also to appease gamblers on the outcome with that
by having a lot of irregular lineups. So none of
these allegations are great, obviously they're not acceptable, but Chauncey's
(01:25:24):
is on a whole other level. And I think the
other thing specifically with Chauncey is I think that this
is a lesson that, you know, what a professional's reputation
is doesn't necessarily mean that's what it is in private life.
So while you know, he obviously is entitled to the
court of law here, I think that this was most
(01:25:45):
surprising because, as you know, covering him with the bad
Boy Pistons, he had a Hall of Fame NBA career
and he you know, has had some ups and downs
as a head coach, but the common denominator as he
was someone who's wideliest respected around the NBA coaches and
players seen as a very intelligent guy, you know, one
(01:26:09):
of those true hoopers, and knew how to relate to
guys and be very positive and ring out the best.
And that very much contradicts the behavior that we're seeing here.
And these things they don't have to be mutually exclusive.
All these things can be true at the same time.
But I'm presenting to you the public side of him
(01:26:30):
to illustrate why there's been a lot of surprise around
the NBA when the news came down that he was arrested.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
Which makes you so all the more surprising because Chauncey
was not a Golden spoon, a number one draft pick.
By the time he got to the Pistons, he was
on his seventh NBA team, and he combined a workman
like effort with his nickname is mister clutch, mister big shot.
Here's the thing and the reason I alluded to the
NBA's conversation behind closed doors and in the every tower,
(01:26:59):
the internal dialogue. We get it. Sports wagering has been
a huge boon to the bottom line. No one can
deny that. But now it's coming with increased suspicion into everything,
including outcomes players are being harassed. Do you think perhaps
the NBA sits down with his partners and said, Okay,
we like our partnership, but we maybe need to install
(01:27:21):
some guardrails in terms of we don't want your booking
profits or profits have a minimum of a hundred bucks,
so you can only bet the over, not the under.
Can you envision something like that happening.
Speaker 12 (01:27:32):
I can envision them something like this happening. And I'm
not defending the NBA here. There's a lot of you know,
I think things you get to be cautious of what
you partner with, you know, gambling companies, but I want
to be surprised that they're also going to make the
argument look like as bad as this looks right now,
(01:27:52):
there were guardrails that detected Terry Rozier's irregular betting patterns.
In regards to that. That doesn't mean that there can't
be more guardrails, but I think that, you know, as
we're talking in twenty twenty five, clearly not just society
and the Supreme Court ruling with legalizing you know, online gambling,
(01:28:14):
but the professional sports leagues towards this. If you would
rewind this thirty years ago David Stern and the NBA
they would never want to have anything to do with
gambling because of all these implications. But I think it's
the same idea about the nineteen twenties with prohibition and alcohol.
You know, this is something that can be a hobby
(01:28:38):
if you know people are responsible, but it can also
lead to vices in addiction. But I think from their
point of view, when you make it illegal, it's a
lot more difficult to regulate. So what I'm getting at
is no doubt everyone's motivated by money, and certainly the
NBA is, and I'm not going to discount that, But
(01:28:58):
I think from a practical way, ends regardless of how
severe or isolated this investigation is, I think that there
will be discussions with those gambling companies about adding safer guardrails,
not just to protect consumers from themselves, but to detect
(01:29:19):
and make sure that this is an affecting the integrity
of the game. But I don't think they're going to
suddenly do.
Speaker 7 (01:29:25):
Away with it.
Speaker 12 (01:29:26):
Again. Money is a huge driving force, but I think
it's their perspective as well that if all of a
sudden this is something that we're not going to embrace,
it's a lot more difficult to be able to regulate
and get your hands on it.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
One last thing about this talking to Mark Mendina, our
Fox Sports Radio NBA guru and a writer for Essentially Sports,
Terry Rozier was investigated for this very thing two years
ago by the NBA and they cleared them. That's not
a good look. And I know they don't have subpoena
power or some of the resources that the federal government has,
but what do they seems like a real miss.
Speaker 12 (01:30:03):
Yeah, I mean, it's not a good look. And I
don't mean to be evasive here because we're always can
especially when we talk here. We call it like it is,
and that's why this segment's great. What's going to be
interesting with this investigation that's going to expose the NBA
here is did they clear Terry Rosier as an attempt
(01:30:25):
to sweep everything under the rug or did this just
really expose that even though the NBA had access to
a cell phone they interview, you know, Terry Rozier and
other people, the fact that they don't have the same
kind of subpoena power and enforcement that the government has
limits it. Certainly the NBA hopes that that's what it is.
(01:30:48):
We don't know the answer to that, but it's very
fair questions for you and I to raise our INTENTNA
on the key question. And this goes, you know, to
presidential politics. It's always you know, what did the president
know and when did he know it? Well, it's the
same thing with the NBA. What did they know and
when did they know it? And so this investigation I
(01:31:11):
hope provides a lot of clarity to that. And it
will either show that the NBA, you know, did what
it could within its own power to take these allegations seriously,
or it will expose that they knew at least a
fraction of this and decide to sweep it under the rug.
Speaker 2 (01:31:30):
One last aspect that can't be ignored. As my wife
brought this up. We're watching TV either night. She's looking
at this. She goes, how much this money? This guy
making his career? I said, I think Terry Rose is
in a final year. But what a ninety four million
dollar deal? Well, what's in it for him? He's going
to help us posse out for two hundred grand, break
them off if you need to give. What's in it
for Terry Rozier to do something?
Speaker 23 (01:31:50):
Like this.
Speaker 12 (01:31:51):
Yeah, I mean, I can't speak specifically to terror Rosier.
I'm not as account nor am I going to pretend
I know private life matters. I think generally speaking, it
is a fair question. When you're talking about athletes that
make a lot of money, it seems like, well, one
they don't need even more, and two they have way
(01:32:12):
much more to lose than to gain. But I think
that whether you're a multimillionaire athlete or you're an everyday,
you know citizen here, there are times that you get
in financial holes for whatever reason, all of a sudden,
you're doing things out of desperation. So I don't know
if that's what caused that, but it would be understandable.
(01:32:36):
It's not to defend it, but you get where I'm going.
It's the same analogy when you know people that have
a stable job but they're making irresponsible decisions on how
much they're gambling. All of a sudden, they're trying to
dig themselves out of a hole because they don't wind
they're going to lose the mortgage and they have an
(01:32:59):
empty bank account, and deskper times call for deskper measures.
And again I'm not saying that's what Terry Rozier was
facing here. But you know, the general question that you're asking,
why would someone making that kind of money engage in that?
You just never know if that's one of the variables.
Speaker 2 (01:33:17):
So when we signed off last week, one of the
topics that I was going to revisit this week is
what the hell ever happened to the Clippers Kawhi contract?
You know where I'm going with that is that just
been dropped like a you know, drop of meg it's
hot or or you know, you know the question I'm
trying to ask. I'm just not doing a very good job.
Speaker 12 (01:33:39):
Yeah, yeah, Do you mean that one investigations replacing the
attention of another.
Speaker 2 (01:33:45):
Well, there's no question that's happened. But what was going
on with that? You know, did the Clippers allegedly manipulate
this so they can sign Kawhi back in July twenty nineteen.
Speaker 12 (01:33:56):
Well that's you know, the NBA is we have discussed.
They've hired a law firm investigate this. So no, the
case isn't closed with that.
Speaker 6 (01:34:04):
You know.
Speaker 12 (01:34:04):
You may recall when we were talking about this, I
projected it would take about nine months to you know,
get a resolution. That's the reason Why I say that
is the law firm that the NBA hired is the
same law firm that oversaw the Robert Sarver investigation when
they're allegations of racist comments and sexism and toxic work
(01:34:27):
environment when you own the Suns. Yes, the investigation lasted
nine months, so I expect that same law firm even
though it's a completely different case here. Maybe that's how
they operate on that timeline.
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
Well, in more important matters, the Dallas Mavericks you're owing to,
and they don't look good doing it. They've lost both
games by a margin of what twenty points or something,
And I thought the Mavericks were going to be good.
It's just a precursor. I mean we're two games into
the season, of course, and they don't have their full
full roster, but a lot of eyes are on that
roster with with Cooper Flag and the like and Anthony Davis.
Speaker 12 (01:35:04):
And look, it also doesn't it's not a good look
for them. When Luka Doncic scores combined ninety two points
in his first two games with the Lakers and actually
set the franchise record. Jerry West had eighty one points
in the sixty nine to seventy season, and so Luca
Magic eclipsed mister Clutch in the first two games here.
(01:35:25):
But I think the simple answers, Yes, it's only two
games and it's way too early to make conclusive evaluations
on the team. I think Cooper Flag will still win
Rookie of the Year. I think Anthony Davis will be
an All Star. I think that they can be a
playoff caliber team. But you know, there are a lot
(01:35:45):
of question marks and also reinforces why the hell would
Nico Harrison do this Luca Doncic trade in the first place,
So I think it just reinforces even though I'm not
going to project there are going to be a lottery
team this season, they would have been better off even
with when accounting for the fact that they got the
number one picks to get Cooper Flag, they would have
(01:36:07):
been better off just keeping Luca and riding his magic
because he's done wonders.
Speaker 2 (01:36:13):
You know, well, you're not wrong, and he helped Dallas
get to the NBA Finals. But I truly think it
is hard of hearts. Nico did not believe they would
ever win a championship with Luca, and I believe he really,
he really believes that, and for all I know, he
may well be right. And what's interesting, look at the
Lakers right out of the gate, I bagged on DeAndre
(01:36:34):
eating pretty good. The Laker fans seem to after Game
one have made them their favorite target already.
Speaker 11 (01:36:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:36:40):
Well, I mean, there's a lot of questions about John
Dreiden because you know, he's come with not the greatest
reputation with how his time ended in Phoenix and with Portland,
had a lot of injuries and consistent play. I remember
talking with him in Porland asking, Hey, do you have
anything to prove, and he says, I got nothing to prove.
I'm a max player and I'll always be a Max player.
(01:37:00):
That did not sit well with a lot of fans.
And you know, since then, the market's been what it is.
He negotiated by with Portland and the Lakers got him
on a relatively cheap deal. But it's the Lakers' championship expectations.
You did see growth in the second game. I thought
it was very vivid. In the first quarter, JJ Reddick
(01:37:22):
removed him, subbed him for Jared Vanderbilt. He was trying
to talk to him on the sideline and DA would
walk right past them. But to his credit, second half
played a lot better, converted more pick and rolls with Luka.
Docis made some defensive stops. He did miss an open dunk,
but ironically, you know, afterwards the Lakers were talking about
(01:37:42):
how that was actually a good play because he was
being aggressive and they started finding some better chemistry in
that pick and roll. So, you know, I think the
lesson here with the opening week is there's a lot
of stuff that happens. There's been a lot of interesting games,
lot of things to unpack individual performances. But these things
(01:38:04):
will sort itself out, not just through radio two games.
I think it's about maybe like a twenty twenty five
game sample size, when you really have a grasp on
what's the big deal, little deal, or no deal. As
you know, the guys at the Doug Gonway Show looked
like to discuss on their platform.
Speaker 2 (01:38:22):
Marc's always a wish we had more time, but I'll
say it again, can't wait to see what the new
cycle brings for next week.
Speaker 12 (01:38:27):
Pal, All right, well, well we'll talk about BRAWNI next
week once the stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:38:31):

Pretty serious?

Man?
Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
It adds to the viewing participate patient of the NFL.
A couple coaches I want to give credit to, because
later in the show I'm going to call out what
the hell's going on in college? You have nine coaches
fired and we're not even out of October yet. I'm
gonna tell you why that's happening, and I'll link it
together and you'll see there is a There's a real
lineage and a reason. Liam Cohen give it up. Jacksonville Jaguars.
(01:40:21):
When they hired him, it felt like they were building
up to a playoff contender. That would be a fagazy
it would be a bit of a process. Instead, they've
already got two big statement wins batting the forty nine
ers in Chiefs and the Jaguars do it in a
scrappy fashion. They're taking advantage of being in a weak
division and if Cohen can get Trevor Lawrence playing up
(01:40:44):
to the level people thought he would be up to
when he came out of Clemson. That could push Jacksonville
over the edge. Liam Cohen was in Tampa Bay last
year and really elevated Baker Mayfield and the Bucks and
they picked up where they you know, they left off
last year. Give it up to Liam colem. I want
to recognize Todd Bowles too. He's done a great job
at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The biggest thing he deserves
(01:41:06):
credit for is how he's been able to keep the
offense flowing. They don't have Tom Brady there anymore. And
after Brady retired, the Bucks hired Dave Canals to be
their offensive coordinator, but he left her head coaching job,
and so then the Bucks hired Liam Cohan. He left
her head coaching job, but yet now they have Josh
Grizzard and Baker Mayfield. Well, he deserves a lot of
(01:41:28):
credit as well, But it's a testament to Todd Bowles
and his leadership that he's keeping the team in a
bit of an unflappable fashion. So we have a tendency
to throw people under the bus, by the way, give
it up to Shane Steiking two in Indianapolis. You know,
I don't really need to mention Dan Campbell and Kyle
Shanahan because they have resumes, right, But guys like Shane
(01:41:48):
Steiking people don't want to buy into the Colts. We
have better. I don't care what you think they're sample
size in. They're coming off another impressive road went off
over the Chargers. Aside from Jonathan Taylor. There's not a
hell of a lot on the Colt roster in the
way of superstars. They play offense, they play defense, and
they've turned Daniel Jones, who knew what they hoped he
(01:42:10):
would be when he came out of dude. All right,
get your pens and pencils ready, your fantasy team, You
getting ready to set your lineups? Kickoffs here in a
few hours, it's time the Fantasy Files.
Speaker 3 (01:42:23):
Fantasy Files with Brandon Deutsch, your go to fantasy football segment.
Speaker 7 (01:42:29):
Are you on one?
Speaker 2 (01:42:29):
God when?
Speaker 28 (01:42:31):
Welcome to this week's edition of Fantasy Files, And you're
going to need to listen to this one even more
so than the other ones because there are so many
players on five weeks. But let's go into my six
start suggestions for the week and we're gonna start with
a lock it in. Start the Vonte Smith against the Giants.
No Aj Brown, and you can really lock him in
(01:42:54):
as your wide receiver one or two or flux option
this week, and he is guaranteed to get ten to
fit teen Fantasy points minimum with obviously that upside of
twenty five to thirty like we saw last week. I'd
sit Kendrick Bourne against the Houston Texans. This is one
of the best secondaries in the league. I'd be shocked
if Juwan Jennings or Kendrick Bourne has a big game,
(01:43:15):
especially on National tight Ends Day, which means Kittle's gonna
go off or at least try to McCaffrey. They're going
to try and pose their will in the run game
like they did last week. That's something that they're gonna
do and have to do to truly beat the Texans
because the secondary. Mac Johns will throw three picks if
he tries to throw for three hundred yards in this game.
I'd start Ted Rowa McMillan against the Buffalo Bills. We
(01:43:35):
know the Bills have had injuries on that defensive line
and in their secondary over the past few years. It
seems like their defense is always hurt regardless it's not
that good, so it doesn't matter injuries or not. Even
though Bryce Young is not playing, Tedro McMillan should still
be able to have one of his better games of
the season, and especially at bounce back because last week
(01:43:56):
it wasn't really his fault, but he only got three catch.
I'd sit Alvin Kamar against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I
know Kendray Miller towards ACL and Alvin Kamara is questionable.
He's been dealing with injuries all year. It seems like
every year's dealing with injuries. He plays through it. Last
year was the same thing year before. I believe it
was the same thing as well. He hasn't had a
game similarly to last year where he put up four
touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys and Kubiak was the OC
(01:44:17):
and the Saints looked incredible for a few weeks. That
automatically got Kubiak poach by the way by the Seahawks
to be their OS. Which is it turns out like
it was a great hire and maybe the Saints should
have tried harder to maybe make him the head coach
instead of Kellen Moore. But I digress Kamara. It doesn't
even matter who they use at running back. It's just
not a favorable matchup, especially since they're gonna behind probably
(01:44:38):
the entire game, which means he has virtually no rushing
up seven will have his fantasy points contingent upon pass
catching star Kyle Pitts against Miami. He had seven for
sixty one entering the fourth quarter last week against the
San Francisco forty nine ers, who, yes, we're banged up,
but only allowed ten points. So Pitts is getting the targets,
at least with Michael Pennix. Now, if we remember, Kirk
Cousins targeted him a bunch when they were playing together
(01:45:00):
before kirkopp bench last season. I think it's another big
game for Kyle Pitts and he's locked it in ten
to fifteen fantasy points against the Miami defense at is atrocious.
I'd sitch a Corey Krossky Merit or Bill as many
like to call him against the Kansas City Chiefs for
game script. He's going to have what ETN had last week,
where ETN was eight for forty four against the Rams,
(01:45:20):
but they lost thirty five to seven, so he was
completely kicked out of the game script that's going to
be jcm right Chkorey Krosski. He'll have maybe ten carries
for thirty five or forty yards, and unless one of
those is a touchdown one of those carries, it's going
to be a negative game strip because the Chiefs are
going to be ahead of the entire game. They're going
to control the clock, and they're going to run the football.
I'd start Troy Franklin and Courtland Sutton against the Dallas Cowboys,
(01:45:43):
and Bo Nicks at quarterback is one of the top
starts of the week. I think all those guys go off.
JK Dobbins too. Dallas has one of the worst defenses
on football. This is going to be a shootout. Even
with doubt Denver's incredible defense in Dallas's horrible defense, I
still think Dallas's offense is so elite that they'll be
able to put up thirty points on Denver, which is
why I also like starting the Cowboys players. Obviously, Javonte Williams,
(01:46:05):
Seedy Lamb's a must start. George Pickens, like Dak Prescott,
is a good start at quarterback. All these guys are
good start. Jake Ferguson mustart right like, I think this
is going to be one of the higher scoring games
of the week. And I think that Troy Franklin, who
had ten targets specifically him last week, is due for
a huge game. And we know Son's going to go off.
It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.
He's their best receiver against the worst rank defense in
(01:46:27):
the league, especially in the secondary. But Franklin, I believe
will be the two, not Marvin Mims. In the passing game.
He's going to be utilized. And I wouldn't even be
shocked if R. J. Harvey is a dark throw start
and gainst ten Fantasy points. That's how much I think
these playmakers can thrive against Dallas this weekend. I'd sit
DJ Moore against Baltimore. The only trustworthy Bears receiver is
Roma done Say, and I truly believe they're going to
(01:46:48):
start utilizing Luther Burden little by little a little bit more,
and I'm not saying more is going to get traded,
but I just can't trust him on a weekly basis.
He hasn't proven to be reliable at all. I'd sit
Nick Chubb against the San Francisco forty. Now the Niners defense,
especially in their secondary down Nick Bosa and Fred Warner,
their secondary has been exploited and can be exploited, especially
with those seam routes. So I think Dalton Schultz is
(01:47:10):
a solid start, and I actually think Nick Chubb is
a sit because I think the Niners are going to
sell out to stop the run for CJ to pass,
try and get pressure on him on blitzing downs. Schultz
will be the beneficiary of that. With Nico Collins out,
Jane Higgins might be the beneficiary of that. But I'm
not saying he's a lot atin start. I truly think
Citty Nick Chubb is the move this week, especially with
the way Woody Marx has been playing in Woody Marks
is a risky start. I'm not saying sit Woody Marks,
(01:47:32):
but he's a risky start. I'd start Rico Daubele against
the Buffalo Bills. I mean, they started Shoba Hubbard last week,
and then they realized Rico Dawdle's better, so they gave
him seventeen carries, which is great, and he bawled out,
so I would make sure to sit him again. I'm
Brandon Deutsch on the Bernie Fratto Show with Fantasy Files.
Make sure to check us out every week BSD Takes.
You can find me on X and Brandon est Deutsch
(01:47:53):
on TikTok. Now, back to the Bernie Fratto Show. Let's
all win our matchups this week.
Speaker 2 (01:48:00):
Have it does? The season March is on. You get
closer and closer to qualifying for your league playoffs. And
every week, every week and every matchup is important. So
as you speculate and select your lineups, choose wisely. It's
why we do the Fantasy Files segment. You know, there
(01:48:22):
have been nine coaches in college football already fired and
we're not out of October yet. And those schools, oh
a total of one hundred and sixteen million already to
these coaches, this is insanity. But why is it happening? Well,
I'll tell you why it's happened. It's actually there's a
very sort of a logical stepping stone sort of a
(01:48:45):
progression as it were, that has taken place ever since
the you know, the the beginnings of the transfer portal
which led to the nil and I'll tell you what
it led to next. I'm Bernie fraderwer Comedy lyon from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it lot.
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports
Radio or back of the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports Radio,
(01:49:05):
coming live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios here in
Las Vegas. You may have noticed that we're not even
out of October yet, and already nine college football coaches
have been fired lesson you know, buy halfway through the
season James Franklin. Of course, the big one Penn State.
(01:49:29):
Last Saturday, not yesterday, but last Saturday. Billy Napier won
a game in Gamesville, Florida, but that didn't save his job.
Three three and four start, Billy Napier was fired. And
of course, earlier in the year, Mike undeaed Oklahoma State,
Sam Pittman at Arkansas to Sean Foster e c LA
(01:49:49):
Virginia Tech fired Brent Prye Oregon State, Trent Bray, Alabama
Birmingham Trent Dilfer. And then right after the hour and
our more than hours after Florida let go of billion Apier,
reports indicated that Colorado State fired head coach Jane Norvel
after they lost to Hawaii and they became two and five,
(01:50:12):
and Jane Norville was fired. So there are now eleven
FBS head coach openings, including interim rolls at Stanford and
Kent State, and according to a three A reporting agency,
Florida State officials allegedly held in formal calls about their
future head about the future of their head coach, Mike Norville.
(01:50:33):
Now see, a buyout for Mike Norvel would cost the
Seminoles about fifty four million dollars, which would be the
most among all current FBS programs. Penn State James Franklin
was forty nine point seven Billionnapier was twenty one million,
and it goes down from there. So right up, we're
up to one hundred and sixteen million in buyouts and growing.
Why is this happening? What the hell is going on?
(01:50:54):
This is craziness. Well, let's go back and you remember
a few years ago, the NCAA established this little thing
called the Transfer Portal, so players weren't encumbered to a
life of indentured servitude when they were playing for the college.
(01:51:15):
When I was playing college baseball, if you transferred, you
had to sit out here Redtree year. That's gone. Transfer
all you want now, But then they coupled it with
nil name, image and likeness, and what that essentially did was,
let's face it, they've created free agency, a robust free
agency market in college football. Well, who's footing the bill
(01:51:36):
for this free agency The donors and the collectives. So
these donors and collectives who say, hey, we can pay
for our quarterback and get them here tomorrow. Well, now
they feel like the fact of owners. They want input.
So if they say, hey, we just gave you a
program twenty three million dollars, this guy sucks, he's three
(01:51:56):
and four, get him out of here or the money's
going to dry up, Well they're going to follow it.
See because nil deals are clearly contributing to these college
head coach firings because one of the things they've done
is dramatically, and I mean dramatically, increase pressure to succeed
(01:52:17):
Quicker and Kurt Signetti at Indy End. It's kind of
ruined it for everybody. And Clark Lee had Vanderbilt's right
behind him. All Right, you've got this wild wild West
and overeth it's allowsy cliche. I get it, but you
know where I'm going with that. It's created tremendous pressure
from boosters and in the transfer portalism slowing down, it's accelerating,
(01:52:41):
and what that does is disrupt team dynamics. So you've
got alumni and donors that continue to pour money into
these collectives for player payments, and they say, hey, we
want to return our investment. The hell we think you
gave you this money for so you can light it
on fire keep yourself for them. No, not up in here.
We want return in our investment in the form of
(01:53:03):
like winning games and going to the playoffs. And that's
given collector, these collectives and donors frankly more leverage than
the athletic directors have from my humble opinion, see because
by funding these lucrative and IIL deals, and make no mistake,
they are lucrative boosters donors again, they fail a sense
(01:53:27):
of entitlement, They feel a sense of ownership. They are
invested in the team's success, and when the team's performance
does not live up to expectations and not match what
their investment expectations were, then the donors start to pressure
athletic directors to make changes, which is leading to the
termination of the head coach. And we've had nine of
(01:53:48):
them already in the first nine weeks of the season unreal.
This creates a situation coaches who fall short of immediate expectations. Again,
they're quickly replaced, even though they have these massive, crazy,
large contract biots. Nick David said it a couple of
weeks ago. He basically was very blunt. He said, people
(01:54:11):
who donate to the nil deals think they have a
voice in major decisions, acting quote just like a bunch
of fans. And this sort of you know, oversight of
influence from boosters to the administration is a tremendous difference
(01:54:31):
in departure from the previous model of how an athletic
department was managed. And despite the high cost of these biots,
and they're incredible. Remember just what was it last year
of the year before Jimbo Fisher at Texas A and M.
They paid him eighty one million to go away. I think, wow,
look at him now. There ain't no the schools are
willing to pay these large sums to fire coaches who
(01:54:53):
don't produce the results they want or don't produce the
results they want fast enough. And urban Meyer once said
that he initially believed, or maybe I don't want to
quote him, but the consensus among those he talked to
that nil spending would make coaching buyouts too expensive, so
(01:55:14):
therefore the coaches were be indemnified. But that's not happening.
I just you know, I could give you all the
numbers again, I'll give you a few. I mean, you
already know about James Franklin, Billy Nypier, but my gund
he got fifteen million to go away to Sean Foster
got six and a half million to go away. Trent
Dill forg got two point four million. This is real money.
(01:55:36):
Even j Norville, the bottom of the barrel in terms
of what they paid him to go away, got one
and a half million to go away. The problem is, anyhow,
the Nile has created this tremendous landscape of free agency
where players they're incentivized to transfer schools because they can
get better financial opportunities, maybe better life opportunities, but definitely
(01:55:59):
better financial opportunities. That's what's driving this craziness. All that
does is create instability for your program, which makes the
coach job. Coaches job more difficult, because how do you
develop a roster? How do you keep and develop a roster?
It's hindered. How do you develop team chemistry? Some can
do it better than others, I guess, but most can't.
(01:56:20):
Coaches are now having to completely and constantly re recruit
their own players to keep them from entering the portal.
In some cases, like at Maryland, dozens of players transfer
out in the single off season, and act forces coaches
to rebuild their roster every single year. So you have
(01:56:40):
this focus and this these benefactors who say we'll play
you individual players, and you're going to enjoy tremendous individual
financial gain, but at what price for starters? In most
cases team cohesion. Now, some players might be more concerned
with securing a lucrative deal for themselves then whether or
(01:57:03):
not their team wins games are their on field performance.
I know that sounds cynical. So that forces coaches to
become de facto agents in addition to be in coaches
and surrogate parents and leaders. They're now agents and financial
advisors in addition to their traditional coaching duties. And what
this has also led to, frankly, is that coaches have
(01:57:26):
decreased authority. The players have all the leverage in the
ANIL era, Make no mistake, it's frankly diminished the head
coaches authority. When you got the option leave for a
better deal. Players are no longer as dependent on their
coaches for advancement, for the opportunity for their future. Potentially,
this undermines the coaches and their ability to build a culture.
(01:57:48):
And that's what's happening. In most of the cases. Coaches
find themselves with less control than ever over team culture.
Players have the bargaining power. Now, many of the longtime
coaches we've seen it, like Nick Saban has said that
this chaotic nature or the NIL and transfer portal era,
that's the reason I'm stepping away. Tony Bennett did it
(01:58:09):
in basketball, and there are other name coaches have as well.
I'm not going to give the laundry lists. But this
also takes a significant tool on the sport and the
profession because as an overriding entity and institution only has
select few benefit and the only benefit financially. And it's
(01:58:31):
a ripple effect. Okay, this instability that's caused by the
NIL and I know it's here to stay. I'm not complete.
I'm just telling you the way I see it. Wire
nine coaches fired and October is not even out. The
transfer portal, expanded playoffs, conference re alignment, the coaching care ofusel.
They're human beings. The cycle of pressure, the higher and
(01:58:51):
higher expectations, rapid turnover, and when you can't meet the
inflated expectations of donors who now think they are owners
and their glory, fight fans with a lot of money,
which are often tied to the investments they've made. The
head coach is and always will be the first to
be held accountable, even if they walk away with millions
(01:59:12):
of dollars. It's still not a pretty picture, but that
is the state of college football circa twenty twenty five.
Coming up, we talk about the NFL, the NBA betting scandal.
Give it lock, It's a Bernie fraddle Show.
Speaker 1 (01:59:27):
Don't listening no Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:59:30):
That stretch you heard the band. The Bernie Frale Show
keeps you rolling right along. My name is Bernie fraddle
Wick Comedy Live from the Fox Sports Radio studios here
in Las Vegas. We will take you up to three
am Pacific, six am Eastern, and as I mentioned at
the top of the show, I want to take a
deeper dive into these NBA gambling allegations. Who's involved, how
(01:59:56):
are they implicated, what are the specifics, what might be next?
And the potential for additional fallout and even also what
Tim donaghy, what his bull prediction is. But before we
get to that, we've got some interesting sound. Let's give
it a listen.
Speaker 29 (02:00:13):
That's upstanding, that's outstand But I will tell you this,
it's outstanding. I will tell you this. The names haven't
been changed. We know the names, we know some of
the names, and uh, let's let's start there. Because when
(02:00:33):
the indictments were file Thursday in federal court regarding these
allegations of illegal gambling by many current and former NBA players,
it's not being touted as the potential will be one
of the biggest scandals in American sports because of its complexity,
it's moving parts.
Speaker 2 (02:00:50):
Do I know how the hell do I know? No
one knows nothing. I know, I don't know nothing. I
will say this, though, this does seem very much more
out of the ordinary. Right now, we're hearing the name
Terry Rozier. He's a current guard for the Miami Heat,
the current Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups, and then a former
(02:01:12):
NBA player and coach Damon Jones. By the way, Rosier
did not play in Miami season Open on Orlando on Wednesday,
and Billips coached the Blazers that night, but both have
been placed on leave by the NBA. How are they implicated, Well,
there's two separate indictments here. One of them involved providing
(02:01:32):
inside information about NBA games to gamblers. The other concerns
underground poker games allegedly rigged by crime family associates. Again,
these are allegations. We are not going to play moot
court here. On the Bernie Frauder Show, Rosier was indicted
(02:01:53):
on the inside information case, Chauncey Billups was indicted on
the poker case, and Damon Jones was arrested in connection
with both cases. Now, as you expect them to do,
both Billups and Rosier, through their attorneys, denied any wrong
during doing other than that, not a lot of comments
or the specifics. These are the specifics now. The allegations
(02:02:15):
against Rosier are very similar to those of Raptors player
johntay Porter, which we talked about months ago last year
on Might Show and essentially earned John tay Porter a
lifetime bad from the NBA. Rosier is accused of letting
a close friend know that he planned to leave a
game back on March twenty three March twenty third, twenty
(02:02:38):
twenty three with a supposed injury. So the friends sold
the information to other gamblers, who, along with other co conspirators,
then placed allegedly more than two hundred thousand dollars in
bets on the under and Rosier statistics for the game
for purposes of this conversation, like, for instance, okay ah,
(02:03:01):
would he score under ten points? Rosier was playing for
the Hornets at the time, and the game in question
was against the Pelicans. Now Jones is, and he left
the game early with a supposed injury. Jones is also
accused of passing along inside information The gambler's damon Jones.
His indictment alleges that he sold or attempted to sell
(02:03:23):
non public information regarding the injury status of a Laker player.
They didn't name the player at the time. One such
player was evidently it's been saying it was Lebron James now.
According to the indictment, Jones texted an unnamed co conspirator
before a Lakers Bucks game on February ninth of that
same year, telling the person that this unnamed player would
(02:03:45):
not play, urging into place a Big Bat at Milwaukee
to night before the information gets out, this story gets convoluted.
This is where they say that Lebron James matches the
description of the unnamed player identified as Player three and
the indictment he was rue loud for the game due
to ankle soortess. And let's make this perfectly clear, Lebron
(02:04:06):
James is not accused of any wrongdoing. It's just hurt.
Someone said he's hurt. He's not gonna play now. Billips
and Jones were also indicted in a separate case involving
an illegal poker ring that the FED say has ties
to for the five major New York mafia families. According
to the indictment, the poker games were being fixed through
(02:04:26):
the use of rigged shuffling machines, card analyzer technology that
loaded onto decoy cell phones. And oh, by the way,
guys would wear these special contact legends that could read
three marked cards and other means. Now, Billips and Jones
are accused of playing in the poker game that we're
backed by these groups, participating in what the FEDS call
(02:04:48):
quote cheating teams. They would defraud unsuspecting marks who thought
the games around the level. Now this indictment also alleges
that the defense that's used professional athletes to attract victims
of the scams to play in the rig games. Billips
and Jones quote received a portion of the criminal proceeds
(02:05:10):
in exchange for their participation in the scheme. According to
the indictment, so where do we go from here? You know, home, dinner,
maybe a show, No, maybe not see because this is
what the narrative has been. And this I don't know
because you don't know what you don't know, and we
all act like we know and nobody knows nothing. But
this is what's being said that Thursday's bomb show could
(02:05:33):
be just the beginning. Chauncey Billups is the only named
in the poker indictment, but he also appears to have
been involved in the inside information scheme as well, because
that indictment refers to quote an unnamed co conspirator eight,
who is a resident of Oregon, where Billups coaches the
Blazers and was an NBA player from approximately nineteen ninety
(02:05:54):
seven through twenty fourteen and an NBA coaches twenty twenty one.
They're implying that co conspirators are eight. Co Conspirator eight
is accused of providing information about the Blazers lineup that
for a March twenty fourth game in twenty twenty three
against the Bulls to a defendant named Eric Ernest, which
(02:06:15):
Ernest and passed on the gamblers who made bets against
the Blazers. By the way, the Blazers lost by twenty
eight points. That name that night, Ernest is also named
in the poker indictment. If you can follow all this,
God bless you. Okay, this isn't easy, but this is
how they this is how it's been reported. Now, the
(02:06:35):
indictment only mentions that one in instance of the unnamed
Billups like co conspirator divulging this non public information to betters.
The NBA, they are saying, should be very concerned about
the extent when you have an active head coach with
ties to allege mob affiliated gamblers providing inside information with
those gamblers, the NBA should be very concerned. In a statement,
(02:07:00):
Billups attorney said, quote, anyone who knows Chauncey Billups knows
he is a man of integrity. Men of integrity do
not cheat defraud others to believe that Chauncey Billups did
what the federal government is accusing him of is to
believe he would risk his Hall of Fame, legacy, his reputation,
and his freedom. He would not jeopardize those things for anything,
let alone a card game. Furthermore, Chauncey Billups has never
(02:07:21):
and would never gamble on basketball games, provide insider information,
or sacrifice the trust of his team in the league,
as it would tarnish the game he has devoted his
entire life to. Chauncey Billups has never backed down. He
does not planning to do so. Now will he fight
these aggaleegations with the same tenacity that mark his twenty
eight year career. We look forward to that day in
court end quote a pretty strong statement by his lawyer.
(02:07:44):
So then the court cases will begin, and it's, like
Mark Mondina said, it's going to take a long time
to play out now. Jamon Jones' involvement is also troubling.
He played eleven seasons in the NBA for ten different teams. Yes,
he was well traveled, but also well liked and popular.
Like Chauncey Billuffs, became friends with many top players. Quote,
(02:08:07):
and this quote can be attributed to a very respected writer.
I believe he's with Sports Illustrated Chris Mannex. He wrote, quote,
some within the league walls see the roseerin billups situations
as containable even during the indictments, as a deterrent for
years to come. Jones' involvement, though, could cause the fallout
to linger and spread. Quote. One high ranking team executive
(02:08:30):
told Mannix that Jones is the NBA's biggest liability right now.
End quote. Here's where it gets crazier. Thursday's indictments only
named NBA players, but it's now being reported and out there,
and the ether that they're telling us to all prepare,
(02:08:50):
you know, you prepare for impact. Fans should be prepared
for additional revelations about gambling improprieties on the college level.
One of the men in both indictments, by the name
of Shane Hennon, has previously been tied to suspicious bets
on college games, which leads to Tim Donnihey and his
bold prediction. Now you may remember Tim Donahey. He's a referee, retired,
(02:09:17):
long gone. He's always referred to quote as the disgraced
former NBA referee. And you know why, and by the way,
not for nothing. I've said his probably too many times
on the Air November nineteen, two thousand and four, was
at the mouse at the Palace of the Auburn Hills.
Who was one of the referees on the floor that day, Yes,
it was Tim Donaghey. That's just a side note. I digress.
(02:09:41):
Donahey checked in this week. He said he believes the
ongoing investigations involving Chauncey Billips and Terry Rozier are quote
just a precursor to an even bigger scandal. Again, I
don't know nothing. I'm not going to act like I'm
smart about this. How would I possibly know? The FBI
arrested Bill Rosier and again Damon Jones, all on Thursday
(02:10:04):
various allegations linked to gambling. We've already said this, Bill
have stepped down from his role as the Blazer's head coach,
who's tied to a rig poker game operation and connection
with organized crime families. Rosier accused of faking an injury
to ensure certain prop bets on his performance would cash
in Jones. Damon Jones allegedly sent inside information on an
(02:10:27):
injury status of a player, telling his people to bet
against the Las Los Angeles Lakers because this player allegedly
Lebron James was going to be hurt that night or
was hurt that night. Again, don't get this twisted in
any way. Lebron James is not being accused of anything.
(02:10:48):
Donahey also shared quote here we go again. He was
not surprised about everything going on. He claimed the ongoing
fiasco is just the beginning with an even bigger scandal waiting.
Here's a prediction, He's bull prediction waiting to be unearthed
at the college level. Quote, I'm definitely not surprised. Well,
(02:11:08):
what's going on, Donna? He said, I think this is
just a tip of the iceberg. If I if I
had a nickel for every time I heard tip of
the iceberg since Thursday, Jeff Beezels would be bowing my
lawn right. Donnie went on to say, quote, I think
you're going to see a lot more of a bigger
scandal coming out of the college level because you have
(02:11:29):
these young athletes that aren't going to make it to
the next level. Somebody is going to offer them money
to maybe fix the game and only win by twelve
rather than fifteen. And Michael Frenzies talked about this the
other night. He says, Hey, this has been going on,
you know, forty fifty years or longer. We tell players,
we're not telling you to lose. You don't have to lose.
(02:11:53):
Just when by less than what the points bread is,
everybody goes unhappy. Right, and Donnie, he would not have
to say he thinks the players will take that money
because they need a way to support their family. Again,
here we are. I think it's just a tip of
the iceberg. The conversations if you know, the group, think
echo chamber. We don't know what's what and what's next.
(02:12:14):
And I know it's minds staying. There've been up to
thirty four people arrested. Now we'll see if more big
names come out.
Speaker 6 (02:12:21):
Now.
Speaker 2 (02:12:21):
Look, Donahey has long maintained that is only illegal activity.
During his NBA refereeing days, had connections to crime families.
But those claims have actually been debunked. And you know,
and I don't know either about that. So there are
going to be some people who say, how the hell
(02:12:42):
can we take Tim Tim Donahey seriously? Due to the
checkered past he has, It's not hard to imagine, right,
But here's the thing. If the FBI does thorough investigations,
which clearly they have been over the last goo years.
They might very well follow his lead into looking in
(02:13:03):
the college sports if they aren't already. We don't know,
and that's why this is crazy coming up. There have
been twenty seven instances of gambling improprieties, hullabalooes, consternations justince
May of twenty eighteen when PASSPA was passed. And I'll
(02:13:25):
tell you what that means, what passval was, and I'll
give you a taste of what some of those You
think this is all new, No, No, within a year,
they were gambling hullabalooes that took place right after the league,
you know, the advent of legalized gambling, of which thirty
eight states have now taken advantage of. Hi, Bernie Frattle,

(02:14:45):
get off the air. By the way, I do want
to get to some of these scandals. You remember. In
May of twenty nineteen, the Supreme Court issued a decision
which allowed states to individually regulate sports petting. It was
called PASPA, the Professional Amateur Sports Protection Act of twenty nineteen.
(02:15:11):
It overturned a law that was signed into Congress in
nineteen ninety two by President George Bush at the time
that made gambling you know, illegal unless you know you
were in Nevada or Delaware from a federal standpoint, Well
overturned that and basically there are thirty eight states now
(02:15:33):
they have some form of sports gambling where it's legal,
and it's regulated as well as Washington, d C. And
Puerto Rico. All right, But again Tuesday, the NBA became
the latest league to dominate the sports conversation due to
a gambling scandal. And again you already know Portland, Chauncey
Billips and Terry Rose here they're part of the sweeping
(02:15:56):
and federal investigation. But in light of this recent news,
look you think this is new. There have been twenty
seven now, none rise to the level of what's being
reported now. But you can go all the way back
to November of twenty nineteen, the ink was barely dry.
The NFL suspended a cornerback named Josh Shaw the Arizona
(02:16:17):
Cardinals for betting on NFL games. On multiple occasions, he
was betting on NFL games. It marked the first instance
of the league suspending an active player for betting on
games following the Supreme Courts twenty eighteen decision. But it
wasn't just NFL. A year later, MLS suspended Felipe A Hernandez.
(02:16:41):
He was a midfielder for Sporting KC, a soccer team.
The investigation found he'd been placing online bets on MLS
games but even though they didn't involve his own team,
he was totally he was worried about his safety and
he had gambling debts and it's a mess. But guess
what you remember this one March of twenty twenty two,
(02:17:04):
Calvin Ridley was also suspended the wide receiver. The then
wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, he was suspended for the entire
twenty twenty two season for betting on NFL games, including
Falcons games. Now, really he's not plays for the Tennessee Titans. Now.
He was reinstated in March and twenty twenty three, and
he wrote he made quote the worst mistake of his
(02:17:25):
life by gambling on football. A little later in the show,
I'm going to get to some of these other gambling,
you know, piccadillos that players have been involved in over
the years. But we have a we have a major
news story coming out of Texas Tech, and I meant
to get to this earlier, ever so quickly. It's kind
of filler stuff. Texas Tech has officially banned their tradition
(02:17:50):
of throwing tortillas at home football games now due to
Big twelve penalties. The ad apparently he's got the authority
to make this decision. Guy by the name of Kirby Hokott.
He says he wants to avoid fines and ensure the
team is not penalized for fan actions. It's interesting is
this has been a tradition at Texas Tech for I
(02:18:12):
believe thirty five years or if not longer. Maybe someone
can correct me. I don't know the reason for the band. Well,
the Big Ten Conference, will they stiffened penalties for objects
being thrown on the field in Texas Tech where they
want to avoid those fines. It was officially announced just
what four or five days ago, and again it was
(02:18:33):
done during opening kickoffs. It's been done for about thirty
five years. And Patrick Mahomes has spoken on He said
he've used the band negatively because it stems from the
desirous care opponents, which I don't think is entirely true. Okay,
now I'm going to get to that in a minute.
(02:18:56):
The coach at Texas Tech, Joey Maguire, he says he's
encouraging fans to support their team in other ways, you know,
like waving towels to maintain the high energy atmosphere. Here's
here's what I Here's what I find funny. How the
hell did this ever happen in the first place? What
started this damn tradition? Well, it turns out that it began.
(02:19:20):
The main theory is they used to throw soda lids,
and they just decided to switch to tortillas in nineteen
eighty nine when they could no longer get soda lids
because soda lids weren't provided when you bought drinks. But
a better theory is that there was a nineteen ninety
two broadcaster who I don't know the name, he appears
(02:19:40):
to be unnamed, joke that if you went to Lubbock, Texas,
the only thing they had there was football and tortillas,
and that is why apparently they began throwing tortillas at
Texas Tech. So can you throw tortillas at Texas Tech
(02:20:01):
games anymore? You better not, and I did not. I
can't lie. Texas Tech played Oklahoma State on Saturday. You
could call it a Big twelve showdown. Not so much anymore.
I don't somebody's kidnapped the Oklahoma State football program. It
is cool to produce Barry Sanders and Terry Miller, and
(02:20:22):
I mean, I don't know think how it happened but
Texas Tech had a home game against Oklahoma State Saturday,
and I mean even wrote an article about it. Well,
today's home game is going to be just a little
different because of tortilla Gate. Tortilla Gate the first time
(02:20:42):
Texas Tech will be at home since their tortilla throwing
tradition was barred and they are no longer encouraged. But
it's become a large controversy. Okay, no, you could no
longer throw football tortillas at Texas Tech home games at
the at the Jones, A and T Stadium. Can do it,
don't do it? Are you going to be in trouble?
There was a big announcement from the athletic director this
(02:21:04):
week and as they go forward the ad, he fell
on the sword as it were. In a statement, he
said Hooka took the blame for the situation escalade that
would it became in recent weeks, saying rules can change,
but our tradition will not. Blah blah blah. Okay enough
for that, they're just not a whole hell of a lot,
but the thirty five year tradition. So if you go
to a Texas That game, please don't throw tortillas. I
(02:21:29):
don't know if there's any such rules for the other
football games spelled futbol, but we cover that every week
on the Bernie Frattle Show. We call it soccer, they
call it football anyway you slice it. It's time Chris
Purfetts World of Soccer.
Speaker 3 (02:21:44):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum. It's
all here in this report from the World of Soccer
MLS Cup Playoffs.
Speaker 30 (02:22:05):
We'll talk about that in a second, but first we'd
be remiss to start the World with Soccer without mentioning
the El Classico that we're finally getting for the twenty
twenty five twenty twenty six season. In La Liga eleven
fifteen am Eastern time, Real Madrid hosting Barcelona, and this
is going to be a real interesting one. If you've
(02:22:27):
been not paying attention to the Laaliga table, Real Madrid
Barcelona have each played nine matches. Real Madrid is eight
to zero to one, Barcelona is seven one and one.
If you haven't done the math at home, that is
a separation by two points. These are two really good
clubs this year, and they'll be chasing each other the
entire way down the stretch because both have a phenomenal stars.
(02:22:50):
Real Madrid is killing Nimbape. We talked about him with
a little bit of a slump last year, but nine
starts in Laaliga, ten goals. Meanwhile, for Barcelona it is
the Spanish kid, someone that just turned eighteen this year
and who we have been talking about for at least
two years now. Lamin Yamal already a tremendous star in
(02:23:16):
his own right. Two goals in four starts across La
Liga this year and already stirring the pot ahead of
the biggest rivalry I would say in the world, claiming
that the rivals Real Madrid, all they do is rob.
They complain they do things rob of course, in this
(02:23:36):
case not meaning actual rob, but they mean talking, you know,
talking to refs, trying to influence the referees a decision
on the pitch. Of course, Jamal has always been kind
of the proponent for Barcelona against Real Madrid, and that
probably tracks and makes him very, very a very popular
man with the Barcelona faithful. Last year he said that
(02:23:58):
Madrid cannot handle Barca and look, this is what you
got to do for Ol Classico. Now here comes the problem.
Always to back it up on the pitch should be
a fantastic game. Now onto the MLS Cup playoffs. By
this time the wild cards have been completed. The Chicago
Fire and Portland Timbers are on a really big match
(02:24:20):
on Sunday at five point thirty pm Eastern between Philadelphia
Union and the Chicago Fire, a one in eight matchup.
I understand that might seem weird as a place to start,
but Union is the strongest club.
Speaker 2 (02:24:36):
In the nation right now.
Speaker 30 (02:24:38):
They have been phenomenal across the across the scope to
defender of the Year candidates with Jacob Blestness and Ky Wagner.
I hope I'm not putching those names too badly. Meanwhile,
on the other hand, the Chicago Fire is being managed
by our old friend Greg ber Halter. Yes, Greg, that's
(02:24:58):
gregber Halter. However, he's gotten the Fire into the playoffs.
Brian Gutierrez scored the team's first playoff goal since twenty twelve.
He's got this team playing at a very good level.
It should be very fun to watch that. Meanwhile, on
the other side of the bracket, Miami has already taken
(02:25:20):
the first game against Nashville. Their next game will be
played on November first, Lionel Messi lifted the Golden boot
as for MLS has its prolific score, and I think
all eyes are on inter Miami to see how good
they're gonna be, how far can they go. It's been
(02:25:42):
no secret for this entire project that everyone wants to
see inter Miami lift an MLS Cup. They lost out
in the Supporter Shield already this year for most points
in the regular season. Now they have this playoff thing.
Leonel Messi scored already against Nashville and look, this is
(02:26:03):
the time of year where.
Speaker 3 (02:26:04):
They really need him.
Speaker 30 (02:26:05):
It's gonna be getting nippy and cold, and this is
the right performance time. But yeah, I mean, if we
keep doing this every year, I feel like, but rest
a shirt. I'm pretty sure MLS wants Leonel Messi center stage,
and I think it would get people to talk more
about MLS. If Leonel Messi and the inter Miami could
lift the cup finally, we would be remiss to end
(02:26:28):
the world of soccer with probably the weirdest thing going on.
I don't know if I have ever talked about the
US Open Cup in this segment. If you're not familiar
with the US Open Cup, it's a lot like Cups
in other countries, especially the FA Cup, but it is
so much more open. This has been around since nineteen fourteen.
By the way, this is a very old tournament and
(02:26:51):
anyone with a club can enter it. Across US Soccer,
so you will see guys in beer leagues taking on
professionals sometimes. And we have here a second round qualifying
match between Bellevue Athletic of the UPSL, which is best
as I can describe that kind of belongs in the
second or third tier of the men's outdoor soccer pyramid
(02:27:15):
and a semi professional club from Seattle called a Shark
to pus FC. This is a story because apparently there
was a protest by the Shark to pus FC manager
who learned that one of the referees during the US
Open Cup match was a former player for Bellevue, which
(02:27:37):
is not good. So US Soccer stepped in a disciplinary
panel ruled on this and says the game has to
be replayed. It's in its entirety Belle. You, of course
appealed the ruling. We have until Wednesday to see whether
or not it will be upheld, and if it is,
the replay of the match will have to take place.
(02:27:58):
Before the third round of the competition on November first. Wow,
this is a weird one. I'll try to keep my
eye on this, but for now, we'll see you next time.
Bernie on the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:28:09):
All right, there you have it, and we next Saturday
is November first, by the way, and it will lead
into sun November tewod which will allow me. I'm the
only person on the network that does this. The five
hour Stravaganti ship will do five hours because at two
am Pacific time, as well as anytime anytime zone, the
(02:28:32):
clock turns back to one, so we'll do five hours.
It's like the fourth year, fifth year in a row.
More than that, probably seventh or eighth year, and orrow
I've done it. No reason I bring that up. It's
hard to believe. November is already here. Then December, and
then we get into twenty twenty six and it is
a World Cup year, which brings us to full circle,
which when we originally introduced the World of Soccer heading
(02:28:54):
into the World Cup in the fall of twenty twenty two.
You may remember our first game United States was against
England the day after Thanksgiving Day. Too much fanfare and
I think the game ended up being a tie, but
there'll be plenty of news going on as well. Coming up.
We wrap up the show, and also I will continue
(02:29:15):
on with some of the noteworthy of the twenty seven
gambling consternation issues that have rocked I see that in
air quotes the sports world. They're still here. They're still
doing just fine. So it's not like this Chauncey Billups
Terry Rozier Damon Jones situation right out on the line
(02:29:37):
is new. I mean, the story itself is pretty wacky,
but the notion there's some other wacky ones here that
you forgot about. So give you a timeline. We're not
going to go over all twenty seven, but I'll give
you a timeline in jog your memory as to some
of the more noteworthy gambling in fractions as it were,
(02:29:59):
that involved players in professional sports. I'm Bernie Friddle Wire
coming toy line from Lata Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Don't go wait, listen to the Bernie Fraddle Show on
Fox Sports Radio. All right, we're wrapping it up on
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming in from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Before I go
any further, I think my producers Mark and Brianna appreciate
(02:30:20):
all your efforts tonight keeping the show on the air. Also,
I want to remind you next Saturday, November one, heading
into Sunday, November two, no matter where you may live
here in the United States, you're gonna get that extra
hour sleep, You're gonna lose an hour day light. We
lose daylight saving time. We go back to standard time,
(02:30:43):
which means at two am on Sunday, November tewod you
will turn your clocks back an hour, which means in
the middle of my show on Pacific time, from eleven
pm Pacific on Saturday night to three am Pacific on
Sunday morning, we'll turn it back an hour, which means
for the I think seventh year in a row, I
(02:31:04):
will do the five hour daylight savings extravagance and I
am here for it. Lots of material and we have
some excellent guests that night night as well as we'll
turn the clock back at two and two will be
one again to we do one o'clock twice. In two
o'clock we'll sign off for three which are really before Well,
(02:31:24):
you get the picture daylight savings time, you lose an
hour next week, so we'll be doing a five hour show,
all right. So the news that took all the air
out of the room and taking a lot of the
air out of this show tonight is, of course the
NBA indictments. But there have been twenty seven such none
that quite rise to this level, but twenty seven such
(02:31:47):
newsworthy items, and I just gave you a few of them,
you know, with Josh Shawn Calvin Ridley, let's talk about
some of the more noteworthy ones. You may or may
not remember. Twenty twenty two, Miles Austin, who was a
wide receiver coach with the Jets. A wide receiver coach.
He was suspended for violating the NFL's gambling policy two
(02:32:10):
days before Christmas twenty twenty two, but it got a
little heated up about four months later. You may remember this,
I do, especially because the NFL in one day and
the in poetial twenty twenty three, suspended five players for betting.
Four of them at the time were Detroit Lions players.
One that still is Jamison Williams out of Alabama, who's
(02:32:33):
now barely starting to reach some of that potential they
thought he had when he drafted him and this is
his third year in the league. Quintes Sephis, CJ. Moore,
Stanley Barry Hill and then Washington Commanders and in Shaka Toni.
They were all suspended for sports betting. Williams and Barry
Hill received six game suspensions. They were betting on non
(02:32:54):
NFL games. But here's the deal. They were doing it
from the Allen Park facility. In the metadata picked it up.
The other guys were suspended indefinitely. That made bigger news
because people thought, well, does that mean you can sit
in your car and bet on your app? But then
when you walk in the building, look the following show.
(02:33:16):
And this is why Geelen Browns comments just ring hollow
to me. Players know, they go through all kinds of
symposium and they're told what not to do. Maybe work
with players you don't know, you're not supposed to do this,
all right. May twenty twenty three adventured into the world
of college baseball. We had my guy, Matt Hohleton, who
founded US Integrity because the Alabama fired their baseball coach
(02:33:40):
Brad Bohannan regarding a game that I think was played
on May fourth, twenty twenty three, after he was found
to be connected with betting activity. The team is on
the road in Ohio was concerning an LSU Alabama game
and there was some sort of inside information I think
coming from the coach. I don't remember, but Alabama is
a fire their baseball coach college baseball. That same month,
(02:34:04):
Iowa and Iowa State announced the gambling probe that dozens
of athletes across multiple men's sports including baseball, football, and basketball,
as well as a certain full time time Iowa athletic
employe Athletic Department employee, were suspended of those rules as well.
June four more players in the NFL were suspended for
(02:34:26):
gambling violations. Then Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, in defensive Envershad Berry,
Demitrius Taylor, and a Titan Titans lineman named Nicholas petite
Frereer they also violated the NFL's gambling policy. Two of
them were suspended, and definitely one received a six game suspension,
again for betting on non NFL sports at a club facility.
(02:34:53):
You're at work. Well, the NHL got involved in October
twenty three. On October twenty six, twenty three, Ottawa Centers
forward Shane Pinto suspended forty one games for activities related
to sports wagering. It was the NHL's first betting related
suspension in this new era of online gambling back to
(02:35:14):
the college ranks, which spilled into the NFL. Now he's
currently a wide receiver for the New England Patriots. Been
In January twenty twenty four, Kishan Today was arrested in
charged with computer fraud and gaming prohibited for persons under
twenty one, and Louisiana State Police had announced he participated
in sports gambling for a period of about thirteen months.
(02:35:35):
The state letter dropped the charges. Now, this one was
really weird, and we tried to report it, but there's
limited It's the damna thing I've ever seen. The Jacksonville
Jaguars in March of twenty twenty four had an employee
his name. He was in front offs employee, not a player.
Sentenced to six and a half years in prison. Why
(02:35:55):
he allegedly stole twenty two million from the team. Sentenced
to six and a half year in prison. He pleaded
guilty in December twenty twenty three to charges of wire
fraud and illegal money transaction. The attorney said the vast
majority of the money was stolen, get this to subsidize
gambling losses. And then the big bombshell in March of
(02:36:18):
twenty twenty four, the Dodgers fights. He was like ganging
history now, doesn't it. The Dodgers fired sho Hey Otani's interpreter,
Ipium is Ahara, March twentieth, twenty twenty four. And I
remember I did the Ben Mallor show around that time.
Oh maybe it was a couple weeks before, and callers
were calling in convinced that show had something to do
(02:36:41):
with this. And I never believed he did, and I
don't think he did, and we'll never know, but I
don't think he did. But he wasn't amplicated anyway. But
this ipium is Ahara was accused of engaging in what
was termed as quote massive theft and using Otani's money
to place bets, and that the question was how did
he get ahold of his bank account? How did the
(02:37:02):
banks allow this? Et cetera, et cetera. He was ultimately
sentenced to fifty seven months in federal prison. He stole
seventeen million from Otani to cover sports gambling debts, and
then he also had to complete guilty to one count
of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a
false tax return. Again we reported on this. In April
(02:37:23):
twenty twenty four, the NBA banned Johnte Porter for life
when they found he told the Sports Better he was injured,
removed himself from a game to control a prop debt
san from mayor, and he was also playing placing bets
on NBA games. June of that year, major League Baseball
player Major League Baseball disciplines in umpire an umpire by
(02:37:45):
the name of Pat Holberg for violating gambling rules. How
about Notre Dame's men's swimming team was part of a
probe in August of twenty twenty four, and then we
get to January twenty twenty five. Tell me if this
sounds Familier Terry Roseier is under federal investigation for a
Betty's game now prior to that, and this news broke
January thirtieth of this past year, nine months ago, that
(02:38:09):
Terry Rozier was under federal investigation for possibly and manipulating
its performance in the twenty twenty three game that we
talked about. By the way, again talked about this with
Mark Medina. He was supposedly investigated by the NBA and
they cleared him. We don't know what happened there. Malik
Beasley was a person of interest in a gambling related
federaling investigation. His lawyer said he's an ex Piston player.
(02:38:33):
He's now a free agent. Was not a target of
DOJ's investigation in sports gambling, but he was part of
an investigation. Louis Ortiz Major League Baseball and now the
Krem De l Krem, johncy Billips, Terry Rozier and the like.
And we will see where the story goes. I don't
know where it's going to go. Everybody seems to believe
(02:38:55):
that it's the tip of the iceberg. They may be right.
Speaker 1 (02:38:57):
How do we know?
Speaker 2 (02:38:58):
We'll find out it's going to do for then Frattle Show,
We'll see you next Saturday night for the five hours
drive again to the Daylight Savings. Keep it locked up
next to Great Andy for a perman Fox Sports Radio
