Speaker 1 (00:01):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well that's rich. You heard the man that time a week.
My name is Bernie Fratle. We are coming you live
from the Fox Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas.
Absolute jam Pack Show tonight. We'll take you up till
three am Pacific, six am Eastern. Real quickly, I want
to give a big shout out to my good buddy
Craig Wood, who put forth a herculean effort to organize
(00:27):
the Almbodina class reunion. And also my good buddy Doug Anderson.
You know him as doctor Doug Anderson spent on my
show many times talking sports injuries. Great researcher too. Later
in the show, the Final Hour, I'm going to give
a tribute to Clayton Kershaw, who, among his many luminary records,
set one. Well that makes it very distinctive, very distinctive.
(00:50):
When you hear the stats, you'll raise an eyebrow. Some
of the stats we saw in college football today raised
an eyebrow. What the hell is is Indiana University also
Death Valley? I don't think Clemson is anymore LSU until
further notice, Yes, but Indiana is not only Death Valley
(01:11):
they're a house of wars. They hosted Illinois Saturday. In
case you missed it, Illinois is ranked ninth in the country.
They gave up sixty three points. They lost by fifty three.
That's the most lopsided win ever by a team outside
the top ten against the team inside the top ten.
The previous was just a couple of years ago. Kansas
(01:32):
State was ranked twenty second. They beat Oklahoma State, who
was in re at nine forty eight. Nothing but I digress.
Fernando Mendozo. You might want to remember that name. Twenty
one to twenty three for two sixty seven five touchdowns.
But that doesn't even begin to tell the rest of
the story. What if I told you Illinois had two
(01:53):
yards rushing. This is Illinois. Somebody said this is their
year with Brett Beilima two yards rushing. The good news
is they hailed Indiana three hundred and twelve. You heard
that right, That is not a misprint. Three hundred and
twelve yards rushing to two. I gotta tell you, Kurt Signette,
he's got something going there at Indiana. He had something
(02:15):
going last year, and I wasn't sure if he kept
it this year. But he's had twelve home games, and
in those twelve home games, Indiana's scored five hundred and
ninety four points and only given up a buck twenty four.
Maybe we need to keep an eye in Indiana again,
even though their playoff run last year was short, starting
to wonder with all due respect to Billy Napier and
his offense under their play play calling, try that again
(02:38):
in English, they looked happless. For to look hapless for
the third straight game, third straight loss, only one hundred
and forty one yards the entire game. DJ Lagway just
completed twelve passes for sixty one yards. Through the year,
something very wrong here, very very long. I Miami just
completely dominated Florida for the second straight season. Miami is
(02:59):
looking to be the real short list of teams who
could win at all. What's odd is Florida, on paper,
appears to have all kinds of talent all over the field,
but you wouldn't know it when you watch his team
play thirty two yards of total offense, not a single
first down in the opening half. There's not a defense
in the universe that can overcome that kind of offensive ineptitude.
(03:22):
And I gotta tell you things are not looking good.
Things are not looking good there for Florida. They're one
and three. There are worst starts since nineteen eighty six.
And look, you don't want to dance on anybody's grave,
but it looks like billion Apier's got one fun on
the grave and the other on a banana peel. With
all due respect, Florida enters a bye week next week.
Be curious to see what they do coming out of
(03:45):
that bye week. I'm not suggesting they're gonna send him
packing in the next two weeks, but you wonder if
he'll continue to call plays another coach who looks like
a drunk crossing in icy street. Remember Dabo Swinney fell
to one and two last week, and he went silly
stupid in his press conference defending his actions. All we've
done is win, he said, We've won this league gate
(04:06):
out of ten years. Is that not good? I'm just asking,
is that not good? This sounded like a guy begging
his little league coach to make sure he knows how
good he is. We can get a free snow cone.
He win your league gate out of ten years, go
to the playoffs seven out of ten years, win it twice. Yeah,
we're a little down right now. But I've got a
long memory, will bounce back. If you're sick of losing,
I'll move on, I'll go Okay, dabble talk is cheap.
(04:29):
Don't show me, tell me. The LSU and Georgia Tech
losses came down to a few plays. But Saturday, Syracuse
strolled in there and made no doubt as to who
was the better team. Steve Angeli, a transfer from Notre Dame,
lit up this Clinton defense thirteen yards per pass completion.
Syracuse scored on their first four drives, and Clemson's got
(04:52):
big trouble. Okay, and yes, the big the defensive struggles
were obvious and certainly a surprise. But Clemson's offense again, Really,
I don't have any cute analogy for this one. Let's
just put it this way. Club kid club Nick may
have ended up with three hundred and sixty five yards passing.
(05:14):
We threw the ball sixty times and it was inconsequential
he lost play double digits at home when they were
three for thirteen on third down. Michigan Nebraska. This was
a game that was a referendum for both programs. Circa
twenty twenty five. All right, a lot of pressure two
highly toddled quarterbacks, Dylan Royola and Bryce Underwood. But as
(05:39):
it usually does often in football, it comes down to
blocking and tackling and the ruster details. Michigan seems to
be very buttoned up, very buttoned up all of a
sudden in their defensive offensive lines. They completely pushed around
an overmatched Nebraska defensive line. They ran for two eighty
(06:00):
six yards on the ground, averaging nine yards of carry.
And on the other side, Michigan's defensive front was completely dominant,
holding Nebraska to under fifty yards Russia. Now, Dilo Riola
was fairly impressive. You threw for three hundred yard, three
hundred and eight yards, three touchdowns. But this is a
classic Big ten game we saw and it comes down
(06:23):
to the trenches, and that's where Michigan excels. So what
if Sherlan Moore was watching the game from his hotel
room or wherever he was bif pogi, longtime Michigan guy,
didn't work out a Charlotte, Well, he's two and oh
it's the front man for Michigan and they look good
doing it. As for Nebraska, you know, they trailed by
ten before Lay'd score cut it to three, and I
(06:44):
would say that if you're in Nebraska and you have
designs on truly competing in the National Tournament in the postseason,
you better fix your defensive line. Because Michigan, whenever they
needed to do what they wanted to do, they were
able to. I'll tell you a defense that isn't having
(07:05):
any issues, and that's Oklahoma. Brent Venables in short order
has turned that Oklahoma team into a legitimate I say
this scenario quotes SEC defense, but you know what I'm
talking about. Now, Jackson Arnold used to be at Oklahoma,
but he might as well still be at Oklahoma for
the time he spent with his former teammates. Saturday, the Sooners,
(07:25):
they celebrated their former quarterbacks returned to Norman with a
sack party. They took him down ten times, an outrageous,
incredible defensive performance versus Auburn. Now Jayden Jackson led the
way with two and a half sacks, and they got
a bunch of guys that got a bunch of sacks
and they lived in the backfield. Now, Oklahoma has now
faced two high quality opponents this season in Michigan and Auburn,
(07:47):
and they won both games. They won both games impressively.
By the way, John Mattier has rightly received plenty of
attention because he's been out standing a quarterback, But truly
it's the defense that sets the tomb for the Sooners.
You almost think they're going back fifty years with the
Selmyn brothers. Brent Vennables promised that he would fix the
(08:08):
defense and they would dominate when he took over his
Oklahoma head coach, and so far he's absolutely made good
on his word. Those sack numbers are gonna they were.
They were not a fluke. They're going to be that
way most weeks. By the way, Oklahoma also has a
buy next week and they got Kent State in two weeks.
By the way, also, okay, don't mean to keep saying.
(08:28):
By the way, the Kent State Golden Flashes have allowed
the ninth most sacks in the nation this season. Yeah,
there you have it. Texas Tech spent a lot of money.
Looks like they're getting return on their investment. If you've
watched college football over the last couple of decades, you'd
look at Texas Tech, especially when Mike Leach was there.
(08:50):
They had a tremendous, explosive, creative passing attack, but their
defense was never quite up to stuff, but it sure
was Saturday is they dominated a good Utah team thirty
four to ten in Utah defensive dominance. What a turnaround
turns out? Money can buy it. A unit ranked twenty
(09:13):
third in the nation last year, all of a sudden,
they're they're looking like the eighty five Bears out there.
And you know, I saw the pregame show that that
poor knucklehead that works for what's that show called Wake
Up Barstool guaranteed Utah would win, and you better get
on Devin damp here now, bet get your bets in now,
(09:34):
because he's gonna win. The heistman the end not so
fast the course, I would say, Devin Dampier actually averaged
three point eight yards per play, and they had been
averaging seven yards per play going into the game. So
the truth of the matter is defense, balance on offense.
Good quarterback. Texas Tech's on the short list of Big
twelve title favorites, and maybe beyond finally, Maryland, you know
(09:57):
we talk about Bryce Underwood. Maryland's got their own dude
at quarterback the Big ten, don't you know? Take role
without calling Malik Washington's name Honor was the only true
freshman a quarterback to start right out of the gate.
Malik Washington looks sensational for Maryland Saturday at Wisconsin, the
nation's third rank dual thread passer two hundred and fifty yards, again,
(10:21):
making him the second two freshman quarterback in the last
twenty years to throw for two point fifty each of
his first four games as a starter. And who did
he do it against? Luke Fickle who's starting slow at
Wisconsin and then fading. This was a debacle. Fickles had
a very tumultuous tenure at Wisconsin. He just got there.
They got blown out at the hands of Maryland. I
(10:44):
gotta tell you, at one time, the Badger's identity was
run the ball, offensive lineman, running backs, offensive lineman, more
offensive lineman. Now they struggle to get back to the
line of scrimmage. They're getting dominated now. I would say
this it's and when when Fickle was at Cincinnati he
(11:04):
brought in good coordinators. Maybe he needs to do that.
I don't know. Whatever Fickle did at Cincinnati isn't translating
at Wisconsin, and the program is going backwards. It's a
really interesting weird kind of big ten this year. I'm surprised,
a little surprised. And we'll see how Michigan does when
they go to se in a couple of weeks, et cetera,
et cetera. But Michigan blocks and tackles really well. That's
(11:26):
kind of my big takeaway of the day. Hey, be

Coming up, Joe Gibbs, our NFL ref stats guru. Yeah,
there's so much data now in the NFL when it
comes to betting. The referees are now part of the mix.
Which riffs have tendencies and which of those tendencies play
into the hands or against the hands of teams who
can't stay out of the penalty box. If you get

Back to Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming live
from the Las Vegas compound Fox Sports Radio take you
up to three m Pacific six am Eastern. It's welcome
and a gentleman who's been a fixed ure on my
show the last three years. We are inundated with data
when it comes to handicapping, analyzing, previewing NFL games, not
(13:21):
the least of which has really taken hold data on referees.
Nobody better to bring in our guy Joe Gibbs following
him on Twitter at NFL ref Stats. Hey Joe, how
you doing, buddy, Great to be here.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Bernie, how you doing.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Good to have you back. I know you enjoyed your
summer in Australia, but your research is always solid. Let's
start with the Rams in Philadelphia, and I know people
are going to want to hear about this game. Brad
Rodgers on the call and the push push and the
way it's officiated and the way it's you know, prosecuted
(13:54):
as it were, has really become a point of contention.
But give us your thoughts on this referee crew and
how it may it may not effect the Rams Eagles game.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Okay, so yeah, for the crew themselves, Rodgers crew, it's
only their second.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
Game of the year.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
They did call a lot of penalties in the categories
of false start and offensive holding in their first game
of the year, well above the league average, so that's
something to take notes for tomorrow. As far as the
home seam referee, he doesn't really favor one side or
the other. There's nothing there. This is Rogers' first game
with the Eagles in three seasons. The last time he
(14:27):
did a Philadelphia game back in Week fifteen of twenty
twenty two, the Eagles at the Bears, which ironically, the
Eagles sealed the game late in the fourth quarter on
a third and goal play at Jalen Hurts touchdown after
Tush bush and they did throw a flag on the play,
but it was on the Bears defense. So keep that
in mind for tomorrow. But the Tush push is kind
(14:48):
of overshadowing the game, at least in the lead up
to it. It's become a very polarizing play. And the
funny part to me is this is courtesy of the
Kansas City fan base off the last week. It somehow
it's become a thing now and it's going to be
rubbed out of the game from the one fan base
that has had anyone will tell you has had the
(15:09):
run of the calls over the last three or four seasons.
It's Kansas City the post a shop for getting beneficial
calls from the referees. Yet one time they get, you know,
on the wrong end of things. All of a sudden,
the twitch push is now the focus, and I think
tomorrow you're going to see them throll flag like it
will be predetermined. That's the way it seems. I don't
know what you're hearing, but it seems like the league
(15:29):
given the green light to the referees to throll flag.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Yeah. I certainly heard the complaints and I think there's
going to be a much more sensitive vie. And later
on in the Been that Hour, I'm going to discuss
the issues with the push to tush push. But I
think Kansas City would be better off advising Travis Kelsey
not to drop the ball on the goal line and
have it pop up in conveniently to a defender's hands.
But I diagree. I've got the Rams plus three and
(15:53):
a half Your thoughts in the game, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
The game itself. Listen. I came on your show last year, Bunny.
It was in Week twelve. It was the Rams host
the Eagles out there at Sofa Stadium, and I told
you at the time, I said, I'm really bullish on
this Rams team. This is before they got hot down
the stretch, and I liked them in that game. They
didn't cover. They lost by I think sixteen points. But
the Rams have played the Eagles twice. The third matchup
in the lost less than a y. I like the
(16:18):
Rams tomorrow as well. Plus the points, but as far
as winning the game, at some point, you've got to
win the game. Maybe Phil times to Johns the Rams.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
You just remember, Joe, the Eagles replaced six pieces on defense.
They're not as buttoned up, and it's very rare for
a team to start out two to zero and not
have your quarterback through a single touchdown pass. So while
this Eagles team is formidable and they're going to be
a tough out, especially at home, they're not what they
(16:47):
were last year based on what I've seen so.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
Far now they're not. But I mean, at the end
of the day, you break down all these positional groups,
and the strength of the Eagles is that offensive line.
And the weakness for the Rams is still that offensive line.
Speaker 6 (16:59):
That's a weak spot.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
And so if the Eagles can get that push up
front and you know, get get the staffed, I still
think the Eagles have the edgy. I really do.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Let's jump to Dallas and Chicago, where, no surprise to me,
Caleb Williams likes to play playground football is a hot mess,
And frankly, I'm impressed with what Brian Schottenhammer has done
the first couple of weeks. And you mentioned in your notes.
The Cowboys are five and oh straight up four and
one against the number in road contests officiated by Clay Martin,
(17:29):
and Clay Martin is running the crew. Talk about that
game Sunday.
Speaker 5 (17:32):
That's correct. Yeah, Clay Martin's on the game. And as
soon as I saw the assignments come out Tuesday, and
I knew straight away, I'm like, let's good for Dallas.
Speaker 7 (17:38):
Now.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
A lot of this stuff is random. I will be
the first to say that, but on Twitter it gets
a lot of traction and people say it's fixed or whatever.
But yeah, the Cowboys five, oh, straight up four. When
he gets to spread with Martin, now this crew, he
klay Martin. As far as offensive holding and false start,
they ran number one offensive holding loss season and the
combination of offensive holding false start they led the league
in these two.
Speaker 8 (18:00):
As far as overall.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
Percentage of penalties call and that's important for one reason.
The Bears are correct number one for offensive penalties in
the NFL after two weeks. It's the Bears and the Patriots.
So you got a floppy Bears offense that is penalty
prone with a refereeing crew that is looking to call
that penalty where they struggled with Chicago. So right there,
(18:21):
that's the problem for the Bears last year. You know,
Tyler Williams is terrible as far as pre stat penalties
and just running the offense in general. But the default,
the default skategoat every single time was Matt Ebertboos. Even
though sometimes it wasn't his fault, he got the blame
for everything. And to be fair, he wasn't a great coach.
He had issues with time management and whatnot. As it
(18:41):
turns out, Matt Ebaboos is the defensive coordinator for the
Dallas Cowboys who come into Chicago tomorrow. So look that
Cowboys defense is not good. And if ever there's a
get right spot for the Bears, this is it. But
having said that, the Bears defense has no great shakes
and best unit on the field is this Cowboys offense.
They're really humming along. Is an interesting statistic to keep
(19:02):
an eye on tomorrow. The Cowboys ranked number one as
a beneficiary of automatic first down penalties. Okay, so those
they're right there. Two things Caleb must an empty Ceede
Lamb and George Pickens have combined to generate six defensive
(19:24):
pass and appearance penalties on the opposing offense on posing
defense after two games, actually seven, but one was declined.
So to put that in perspective on a good year,
if a team can get sixteen beneficial pass and appearance penalties,
that's pretty good. The Cowboys already have six after two games.
They can throw the ball, they may not always connected,
they generate those big chunks of free yard is via
(19:46):
penalty guards. So I like the Cowboys in this one. Look,
their offense is better, and Aubrey's such a weapon on
the kicking game. They do have a big advantage as
far as Bill goalkicking with Aubrey versus what the Bears
can put out there. But like I said, if ever
doesn't get right Spuffor's cargo, this is the one. If
they can put up twenty seven to thirty points tomorrow,
then they've got big problems.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Well, I don't know if they can. Frankly, they're very
sloppy and I just saw the Bears give up a
fifty two burger last week and not look good doing it.
I do like the Cowboys in the game, but the
only side I fired out I actually I completely agree
about the Cowboy offense. I played the team total of
over twenty four. I feel like they do that, and
(20:27):
you're exactly right about Brandon Aubrey, who's an incredible weapon.
He gets off the bus and makes field goals. Do
you expect the Cowboys to exceed twenty four points on
their own Sunday?
Speaker 5 (20:39):
They should? I mean, as much as bad as the
Cowboys defense is, the business not much better than they
have a ton of injuries. Yeah, I mean, I think
I predict that Dallas wins thirty twenty seven, but I
just feels like one of those games where it's going
to be, you know, thirty four to thirty thirty twenty seven,
somewhere in that range. I think both teams getting into
the mid twenties.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Talking with Joe Gibbs, follow him on Twitter, NFL ref Stats.
His research on referee stats and how they pertain to
the outcome of games is impeccable. Couple of juicy standalone
games starting with Sunday Night the Chiefs zero and two
headed in New York, but laying six, it shows you
(21:19):
that the markets have not yet given up on the Chiefs,
and let's face it, they've been without zager Worthy and
Rashi Rice. They're not buttoned up either. But you don't
know what you get out of the Giants. But you
had an interesting stat in your notes. Land Clark is
the referee in the game for some reason, home team's
just thirty three and forty seven against the number it's
in land Clark's career. What do you make of that?
(21:42):
Why is that? Because that's not a small sample size.
That's eighty games, right.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
I think I just think he likes seeing the bad guy.
He likes playing the villain. That's just my opinion. I
have nothing to back that up except these things to enjoy,
you know, calling those penalties, particularly on the home team.
That's all I tell you. The numbers are what they are.
I don't make them up. That's what they are. Thirty
three forty seven against the spread home things.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Well, this is what's interesting because penalties to me equate
to offense, and both teams are having issues with their
offensive line, and we'll having issues with pre snap penalties,
and both are having issues with offensive holding.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Yeah, this sets up tomk Yeah, this sets up tomorrow night.
Because Clark's are good under referee. About fifty six percent
of these games go under the total. So yeah, as
it contains to both teams, They both have the same
issue with the offensive line. The Chiefs it's a perennial problem.
The Giants have an issue with it. Most of the
penalties are coming from that positional group. And then you
have Clock's crew who predisposed the calling penalties on the
(22:46):
offensive line. So it adds up to a game where
it could be kind of ugly. Look, the thing to
the Giants, if they're going to win, the ticket to
a win is that defensive front and just pinning their
ears back and getting off of that Kansas City offensive
line and getting off to my home and then hopefully
they get a few penalties also on the Chiefs to
put him in those long yacht the situations, that's the
(23:06):
ticket to a victory. Whether they can do it, I
don't know.
Speaker 9 (23:10):
At the end of the day.
Speaker 5 (23:11):
The Chiefs have Mahomes and the Giants don't, so I
think Kansas City can squeak out a win. But I
would probably lean to the Giants getting the six.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
No, I'm with you, I have him grabbed the six.
You just can't trust him. But I do think the
Giants front seven is impressive and matched up against the
Chiefs questionable offensive line, that could keep the game fairly close.
I can't picture the Chiefs going zero to three, So
I think you've got to score projected like twenty three
(23:40):
twenty Kansas City. Is that? Is that where you see
this come, you know, ferreting out, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
Twenty three twenty. I think probably the safest bet is
taking younger. I think it's like forty four.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
And a half.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
I think Kansas City squeaks out a win like they
always did last season. Yeah, if the Giants defense can
get offered. Remember it's the Giants home opener. They played
two rugs saw the season, so this is a home
opener on a Sunday nod. If every are going to
be focused and ready to roll, this is the game.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Well, and look at who the Chiefs have faced, A
very good Chargers team who I think is on the
short list if they can stay healthy. They have been
healthy and they still look good. And then they had
to go into Philadelphia under man. So listen, there's never
any easy games in the National Football League. But you'd
rather face the Giants, and you would the Chiefs checked
(24:27):
at the Chargers or the Eagles. Finally, Monday night, this
should be a hell of a game to end the week.
The last time the Lions visited Baltimore was two years ago.
They lost thirty eight to six. At one point the
Lions were getting six, it's down to four and a half.
I haven't fired on the game. I feel like it's
an overplay. But you mentioned that the Ravens nine and
(24:48):
two straight up ten and one against the number with
Bill Vinovich as the referee since twenty eighteen, your thoughts
on the game.
Speaker 5 (24:56):
That's correct. As soon as I saw the assignments come
out and I saw Vinovich was this game, I'm like, well,
that's perfect for Baltimore because to give to get the
listeners some perspective. The Ravens traditionally, you know, they're a
very handsy team, very physical, and they're in the upper
upper echelon of teams who commit penalties, and so Vinovitch
traditionally has been a let them play referee. So what
would the Ravens like to have? I let them play referee.
(25:18):
They can get away with that extra curricular activity. And
their record with Vinovitch kind of speaks to that. They
were underdogs in like five of those eleven games. So yeah,
he's a great referee for them. Uh really that that's
that's my breakdown of it. I know it's simply well.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
What's interesting is what's funny is Vinovitch I don't think
cause a lot of penalties in Baltimore. Is I think
averaging the fewest penalties per game? Uh, what do you
take the stat I don't want to miss.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
I mean this year, Baltimore's really cleaned up their act,
particularly on offensive holding. It was a major issue for
him last year. They've really cleaned it up and made
a point of emphasis to do that, and they've done
it so far through to games. Vinovich is actually calling
and this is I can't believe I'm saying this. He
actually ranks second in penalties per game in twenty twenty five.
That's going to regress though. I've seen this happen before
(26:11):
where he gets a couple of games where it just
it balloons. My guess is Monday night he really pulls
back the reins and they try to let him play,
which again it's perfectly in the Baltimore's style. Look, Detroit
can benefit from him as well, but the Ravens have
the track record with this guy. And look, the other
part is, and you know this, Bernie Lamar and the
(26:32):
Ravens against NFC teams, they're like twenty five and two
or something like. I don't know what exactly it is,
but it's a hell of a record. And so you know,
Detroit's coming off that big win last week against the
subpop is they're outside Monday night, m and T Banks
Stadium is a tough.
Speaker 6 (26:47):
Place to play.
Speaker 5 (26:47):
I look that the Baltimore beat him last last time,
thirty eight to sticks two years ago. I don't think
it's going to be that lopsided, but I can see
it being, you know, thirty to twenty, thirty to twenty three,
something like that. Whenever Vinevich is on a Ravens game,
as an automatic Ravens play for me. So the money's
coming in on the lines, that's going against what I think.
And so we'll see what happens to Monday night.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Joe, we just got a couple of minutes. But I
can't let you go without getting your thoughts on the
Raiders visiting the Commanders with Sean Hockeyly on the call,
it's a short number. I don't trust the Raiders. You
know how I feel about the Raiders, and I think
in a one game affair, Marcus Mariota can put together
a game and the Raiders just start buttoned up. I
(27:28):
saw Gino Smith repeatedly throwing to double coverage against the
New England Patriots Week one, got away with it, not
so much last Monday night against the Chargers. Your thoughts
on the Raiders visiting Washington.
Speaker 5 (27:43):
Yeah, so Hockey was a great under referee. He's about
fifty eight per century Korea and he's two and over
to the end of this season, So listen to this one.
He collectively the Kamando's and the Raiders this season both
committing bob average percentage of the penalties in two T categories,
false thought and offensive holding. You know, Huckley's crew has
a tradition of doing false stat and offensive holding penalty.
(28:03):
So it all has up to me to be kind
of an ugly game at Mariota on the Washington team,
you know they're not going to be as electric. I
don't know what the total is in this game since
he's been announced a STATA, but I would look under
in this one.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Joe, great stuff. We'll have you on again before too
long as the data continues to accumulate for twenty twenty five,
and good luck with all your bets later Sunday night.
Speaker 5 (28:30):
Thanks a lot, Bunny, have a good night.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Thanks. That's Joe Gibbs, our NFL ref guru. Followed him
on Twitter at NFL ref Stats. By the way. For
the best pregame show every weekend, be sure to tune
into Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by BETMGM
every Saturday and Sunday morning. We'll count you down to
all the biggest games for three hours right up until
kickoff for all the best plays and the up to
(28:53):
second injury news up to the second injury news today
in the Countdown to Kickoff presented by bet MGM every
Saturday and Sunday morning right here on Fox Sports Radio
and the iHeartRadio app. Coming up, we are twenty four
minutes away from the strike of midnight literally here in
Las Vegas where I live in the Pacific time zone.
It will be midnight literally perhaps where you live as well,
(29:16):
but certainly figure it leads to minnight hour for all
of us. We got three great polarizing well two are
gonna be very juicy, the third one I think you'll
get a kick out of. Three interesting topics tonight on
the Men that Hour and the callers. What make the
men that hour so great? So twenty three minutes away,
start warming up your fingers eight seven, seven ninety nine
(29:37):
on Fox eight seven seven nine nine six six three
six night. Here's a spoiler alert. One of them might
have to do with the push Push. I'm Bernie Frattle.
We're coming to the line from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All
right back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(29:57):
Comedy Live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios here in
Las Vegas, will take you up to three am Pacific
six am Eastern. Just getting started right now, sixteen minutes
away from the top of the hour that we refer
to as the midnight Hour. Of course, it's twelve midnight
here in sixteen minutes literally in Las Vegas, perhaps the
(30:18):
same where you live, but certainly figuratively. The Bennett Hour
implies that you've got the last word, and the callers
have been nothing short of sensation over the last eighteen
months we've been doing this Midnight Hour eight seven seven nine,
nine six sixty three six nine eight seven seven ninety
nine on Fox. All right, I'm gonna start with a
(30:40):
quick one. Tom Brady situation is raising some eyebrows, the
implication being that Tom Brady is in the coaching booth
too many feels like a insane conflict of interest. He's
the same guy that it's allowed access to interviewing opposing
(31:02):
teams when he works on the broadcast team for Fox,
gathers information and many people anonymously have said, be silly
to think he's not sharing it with the Raiders. Now
what effect that's having? I don't know. You know, he
lost twenty to nine to the Chargers. Didn't look good.
We'll see what they do against the Commanders. But regardless,
(31:23):
the optics are big. And this is one of those
situations where people don't like it if Tom Brady's an
announcer and he's also an owner of the Raiders and
he sits in the owners and coaches box and they
can talk. So give me your thoughts. Is this just
a tempest and a teapot and no big deal with
nothing to see here, just keep moving right along, or
(31:47):
is this an issue that the league needs to deal
with the Second topic, and it's kind of a short
one before we get to the main meet, which I
know people are really going to want to weigh in on,
came out this past week earlier that Shadoor Sanders was
told by the Baltimore Ravens they we're gonna draft you
one forty one overall, And allegedly it was reported that
(32:08):
Shador Sanders says, no, don't draft me. I don't want
to sit behind Lamar Jackson. That I hear him say it. No,
but sometimes when they're smoke throughs fire, So we'll use
the obligatory word allegedly when we talk about this. But
when I asked about it earlier this week in camp,
Chador went Shadoor with, you know, the goofy smile on
(32:29):
his face, didn't answer the question, says I'm focused on now. Man,
I take twenty four hours at a time. All they
had to say was no, I never said that I'd
love to play for Baltimore. Oh no, that's not true,
or yeah, that's my decision. Fair, But he gave the
goofy smile on his face, tried that cordial well all
the while he's got to look in his eye, I'm
better than you. Just remember I'm better than you. I'd
have a better car and everything. So when you heard this,
(32:53):
and do you believe it? Okay, By the way, there's
never been any follow up on Eric Dickerson's assertion that
the league was all out to draft Sudore. Well, Cleveland did,
and now we're hearing that Baltimore was going to. But
Shodor said no because it's beneath him, sitting behind Lamar
Jackson's way. I see if it's true, but just give
(33:13):
me your overall thoughts again, optics impressions. Maybe you believe it,
maybe you don't. What does it say to number one
Tom Brady in the coaching booth after being allowed to
interview opposing teams when he's on the broadcast team and
gather information to Shoodoor Sanders allegedly drafted by the wanted
(33:35):
to be drafted. No, let me try to get in English.
The Baltimore Ravens said, allegedly they wanted to draft him
a one forty one. He said, no, all right, let's
get to the elephant in the room. The touch push. Now,
unless you've been living on Mars or just don't watch football,
you know by now. The touch push is an offensive
play where multiple players pushed the ball carrier the quarterback
(33:59):
from behind to gain yardage. Nobody does it better than
the Philadelphia Eagles, but clearly some miss penalty calls were
pretty blatant last week. Now, Ford progress is part of
this equation. That's a referee determination that merely signifies when
the ball carry has been stopped and the place should
(34:20):
be dead, regardless of how much forced the offense is
using to advance the ball past that point. You know
what it's for. You want to achieve Ford progress and
gain yards to get a first down or touchdown. Nobody
is better at it than Philadelphia. Now there seems to
(34:41):
be a conflation between ford progress and the touch push.
The touch push it's merely a tactic. It's a play,
it's a strategy. It's a method to get short yardage
to move the offense forward. Ford progress is a rule
that's something that a referee has to decide to declare
has taken play, thus riding the play over wire, so blown,
(35:04):
no more progress. You got to deem the play dead.
But that's created a dynamic that makes this play so successful.
In short yardge situations, you get your yard or two,
and then when the play is blown dead or before,
the defense could perhaps push you back. You know, it's
(35:24):
a situation where you can't lose yards after you've gained
them if the ball spoted in the proper, proper place.
All right, the touch push is a legal play. Although
the player is pushing the ball carrier, they have to
be at least one yard behind the quarterback at the snap.
The controversy is people see it as boring, people see
(35:46):
it as maybe a non football play. People see it
as a player that exploits the rules, and people are
calling for it to be banned. But the truth of
the matter is if other teams did it, maybe as
well as the Eagles do, maybe there would not be
such a controversy. Okay, controversy has become the operative word
because there are many critics that argue that it's an
(36:09):
unfair exploitation of the forward progress rule. A defender can
stop the ballcarrier's momentum, but you can't move the ball backwards,
while offensive players pushing the ball carrier forward can effectively
gain yards even against the stacked defense. And some people
even liking it to a rugby scrum. And they've raised
concern about player safety, which is pure bs. There's no
(36:31):
data to hold that up. The way I see it
is it may be an advantage for the Eagles because
they got a quarterback that can lay press about seven
hundred pounds and they execute it well. And I said
this last year when the owners were gonna, I thought
the owners are going to vote it down. Now one
individual who's completely lost his mind about this is Adam Schefter.
(36:53):
He went on the comment last week when the Chiefs lost.
He said, the Chiefs didn't lose that game Sunday quote,
they lost the game when the NFL owners refused to
ban the touch push yesterday. That game was lost in March,
is what Adam Schefter said. And he went on to
say there might be a lot of games that the
(37:15):
Eagles play that are lost in March because this play
is unstoppable. Well, why why can other teams not execute
it the same way? Philadelphia? And I'm not an Eagles fan,
but I'm trying to maintain an objectivity. They just do
it better. I mean, if you got you know, Randy
Johnson pitching in Twilight, you got an unfair advantage. Find
yourself a Randy Johnson. But here's what Adam Schefter went
(37:38):
on to say. It I'm going to quote him forbatim quote,
not only does the defense not know how to handle it,
but even the officials don't know how to handle it.
He's got a point there, said, you see that Eagles
linemen jump off sides every play, and nothing's called. I
don't know if they jump off sides every play, but
I've seen it happen and seen it not called. But
(38:00):
if we're going to go down that rabbit hole, we
see pass interference, in holding and lots of things happen
not called. But Schefter's perception is that it's not called
because the officials have no idea how to really prosecute
this play. Defenses have no idea how to stop it.
The Eagles get to do whatever they want on every
(38:20):
single play. And the tushbush. But keep in mind, you
really only call the tushbush if you need like a
yard yard to half type of thing. It's not something
you're coming out of the gate running part of your offense.
But it's one of those great weapons. It's just basically
a glorified quarterback sneak. Again, it's more than that. I
get that. Some people think it's a rugby play. Some
(38:43):
people think it's cheating. Some people think the rule of
forward progress has been breached when you know the Eagles
are taking UNFA advantage. So I really want to get
your thoughts. This is the topic. I think people are
going to raise their eyebrow most on the toush push
be banned. Will it be banned? Or The bottom line
(39:04):
is you have a situation where maybe just other teams
figure out how to do it better. I know Colin
this week kept comparing it to the defensive shift in baseball.
I don't believe that's a comparison at all. The defensive
shift in baseball gave the team was compromised defensively. It's
just another of the hitters wanted to take advantage of it.
(39:25):
They were stubborn and pulled the ball, but they wanted
to look more like baseball, so they went back and
you know the rules, all right? So those are your
three topics, Tom Brady, is he a conflict of interest
when he's part of Fox Sports meetings pre calls with
coaches getting data and then sitting in the owner's box too.
Shodor Sanders allegedly was going to be drafted by the
(39:46):
Baltimore Ravens one forty one overall, but he told him no,
I don't want to sit behind Lamar Jackson. We don't
know if that happened, but it's out there. He didn't
deny it. And then three the touch push. Is it unfair?
Should it be banned? Do you like it? Do you
not like it? Let's make you commissioner. What are your thoughts?
Or is this all just another tempest in a teapot
eight seven seven nine nine six six three six nine
(40:10):
eight seven seven ninety nine Fox ninety nine on Fox,
it is time. The midnight hour is here. We want
to hear from you on these three topics. Keep it locked.
You're listening to the Bernie Frittle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. My name is
Bernie Fridder. We're coming to you line from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas, and the Bernie
Friddle Show keeps rolling right along. We'll take kept to
three m Pacific, six am Eastern. Lots of stuff to
get to. Callers are lining up because you know what,
it's that time a week and the callers are the stars,
(40:47):
and they continued to be the stars. Real simple, it's
the midnight hour. So we've got the Tom Brady controversy.
He gets to interview and be part of pre game
preparation previod information, then sit in the owner's box, coaches box.
What's your issue with that? Shudor Sanders allegedly is going
(41:08):
to be drafted by the Baltimore Ravers the one forty
one and says, no, I'm too good for that. I
ain't sitting behind Lamar allegedly, but he to deny it.
Your thoughts on that? But the big one, the Toush
push the controversy. You know where we're going, Toush push
forward progress, illegal, legal, your thoughts? You want it banned?
We waste no time. We begin with Steve in Kansas City.
Speaker 10 (41:28):
Steve let it red, Buddy Berdie, pleasure to talk to.
Speaker 11 (41:32):
You, bet you you know Tom Brady?
Speaker 9 (41:36):
You know, I just I don't.
Speaker 11 (41:38):
I don't really care. I just don't think he's a
very good announcer. And that's my main beef with Brady.
I think he's very very average. He needs to focus
on his announcing. That would be my my note there.
Right Thedeers had had taken a taken the penalty for it.
(42:00):
You know the guy, the guy lost ten million Bucks.
So I'll just I'll just let let that one go.
The the tush push should definitely be. This thing has
gotten out of control. I mean everyone the league office
apologized to Andy Reid saying they're cheating, you know. I mean,
the thing is just they need to ban it. It's
(42:20):
just has just gotten totally out of hand, and they
should have They should have banned it on the in
the last meeting, last meeting cycle. And I'm going to
do a wild We'll have a wild card topic here
with Bill Belichick and Dabo Sweeney. Or is the game
passing these guys by Bill Belichick is last an offense
(42:43):
to the NCAA and has his talent evaluators his people
can't keep up with the game anymore. Or Dabo is
just as egos is that of control. I think there's
a theme developing in the college game here that that
maybe maybe this is this isn't such a good environment
for NFL coaches. They can't bring they can't bring sixty
(43:07):
or seventy transfers on it. It just doesn't work. And
even with their even with their legendary Hall of Fame
coaching ability, I think is this military thing looks like
a disaster.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
So I think so too. All right, thanks a lot
of Steve good stuff. Listen, I would you say this quickly?
Speaker 6 (43:25):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Look at the Texas Tech model. Pete Rose said it best.
Coaching college football is like driving a stage coach. Without
the horses. You ain't going forward this day and age.
You got to pay for the horses. You got to
pay through the nose. Shannon de moy and welcome in.
Speaker 12 (43:40):
How are you good, sir?
Speaker 13 (43:41):
How are you this morning?
Speaker 2 (43:43):
Good? What are your thoughts on these topics?
Speaker 13 (43:46):
If Tom Brady is assisting the Raiders, he's as useless.
Speaker 12 (43:49):
To the Raiders as he is a broadcasting in general.
Speaker 13 (43:52):
If she doesn't want to sit behind Lamar Jackson and
coach Harbaugh, he'll be playing spring football in the next
three years. And of course, the city fans like Steve
are the most upset about the touch push. It's legal
right now, so let's roll with it. When it becomes illegal,
then let's see what Jalen's made up. Other than that,
I don't have much for.
Speaker 9 (44:10):
You, Burne.
Speaker 13 (44:10):
I'm out here delivering newspapers, so thanks for entertaining.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
It, short and sweet, excellent. Well, I gotta tell you
it is legal it's not illegal. Now they're crossing some
gray areas. And obviously if the Eagles jump off sides
and it's not called. But with all due respect to
the good folks in Kansas City, it's a little rich
to complain about that. See, it's one thing to get
calls your way, but you got to take advantage of
(44:34):
them too, And the Eagles did the Chiefs used to,
so I never beefed about that. I've got a little
commentary later in the show. What's interesting is the league
might not vote on it this year in the off season,
so you may be around for a while. Jim in
Massachusetts in the third hole tonight. Welcome in, Jim. How
are you?
Speaker 6 (44:52):
Uh you're doing?
Speaker 10 (44:53):
Bernie? Hey, listen Brady being in the owner's booths and
stuff like that, like who cares? Who really cares? That's
not doing anything to the game, or it's fun the
Raiders or anything else. If you want to talk about
Brady at all at any time, you talk about soft football.
Believe me, I'm from New England. If you want to
talk about Brady, talk about soft soft football other than that,
(45:16):
you know, let the guy be, Let.
Speaker 14 (45:17):
Him go do what he's doing.
Speaker 15 (45:19):
Uh, Sanders, So.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
You would say, real, real, simply you're you're you're surmising
that whatever information Brady is gathering, and whatever information allegedly
he may or may not share it while rubbing elbows
with the owners and coaches, you don't think it's going
to have any measurable effect.
Speaker 10 (45:37):
No, I don't think so. I think he's just, you know,
one of those guys that that's a hanger on at
that level. I mean, you got to know Brady if
you're from New England followed all the years.
Speaker 16 (45:47):
Like.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
Jim I was. I was at Double Well, I was
a W T K and Arbor when Brady was there
at Michigan, and he was a nerd, but a good nerd.
I mean that he can play the game. Let's let's
face it.
Speaker 17 (46:02):
But well, that's that's that's a good way to put it.
Speaker 10 (46:04):
Burning a nerd. He's just it.
Speaker 17 (46:06):
He's not devious.
Speaker 10 (46:08):
It's not in his DNA to be devious and do
stuff like he just can't and even if he does.
Speaker 15 (46:12):
You'd see it right away.
Speaker 10 (46:13):
So I think it's just a bunch of nothing. So Sanders,
who can't I said that, and then he's playing with
Depresso whoever he said that to making a big thing
out of nothing. The only reason they're doing that is
because of his last name. If he was like, you know,
Joe James or somebody like that, it wouldn't even be
an issue. It's just playing with the kids cause of
his last name. Why, I don't know.
Speaker 17 (46:34):
All right, but uh, the touch pushes.
Speaker 10 (46:37):
You know what, let's run this out up the flagpole.
Why do you play defense the three downs before it
gets to the touch push? All right, try that for
a while, you know, try playing defense before it gets
to the touch push. All this crap about that now?
The only thing, my my only issue with the touch push.
It should be like the NC double A. You can't
(46:57):
aid the runner. I mean, if you're if the line
to push it all like that, it's not.
Speaker 2 (47:01):
It's not against the rule. As long as you don't
pull the runner, you can't push from behind it. And
here's what's interesting, Jim. Every team can do it, it's
just not legals do it so much better.
Speaker 10 (47:12):
Right, But if you want, if you want to change
it at all, just don't know aiding the runner. Just
leave it like that, No aiding the runner and see
how that goes. Don't change the rule. Completely, but just
don't aid the runner.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
Anymore, all right, jim fair enough, very fair enough, good
stuff as as always. And uh, look, you bring up
the best point which I said a few minutes ago.
The torch push is only effective if you need a yard.
Get your tea. You know, defenses, play defense, get your
get your opponent in bad down, in distance situations, we
(47:41):
stay in the Great Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We go back
to Boston. Jimmy in Boston, joins us.
Speaker 18 (47:47):
Welcome in, Jimmy, how are you with a pleasure to
talk here?
Speaker 19 (47:51):
You keep me company while I drop my truck overnight.
Listen the torch push. I hate it beyond belief.
Speaker 7 (47:58):
I can't stand it.
Speaker 19 (48:00):
I don't care.
Speaker 17 (48:01):
It could be my.
Speaker 19 (48:01):
Team on the virget winning the Super Bowl.
Speaker 9 (48:04):
I hate to play.
Speaker 20 (48:05):
I hate to play.
Speaker 19 (48:06):
It's a cheating it's it's a rugby play that that
blurs the lines of regality of the rules. But more importantly,
forget all that. More importantly, it's taking out one of
the most exciting plays our series of downs in football,
the old fashioned goal line stands. How many times have
we seen in playoff games and big games that goal
(48:27):
line stand man?
Speaker 20 (48:28):
The man.
Speaker 19 (48:30):
He drama and this takes all the drama of the
game is boring. I hate it, and add the fact
that's notinmen officiated so Bernie, I hate it the unbelief.
And I don't know why a twenty pounds man needs
three two hundred and fifty pound men to help him
go and get a yard if he can't do it
(48:50):
on his own, you know, then you know something that's.
Speaker 17 (48:54):
Uh that's too bad.
Speaker 19 (48:55):
But I hate it. I can't stand that Tom Brady
much about nothing, Bernie. Teams are not I beg to
tell him anything, to show made that I want treat
him like a scout, treat him like a whatever the
press man. You know, he takes what you give him.
So again I think with that a call sentence because
(49:15):
it's Tom Brady. Yeah, it's a big issue and to
do a stand this, I could care less about.
Speaker 17 (49:21):
The guy one way or the other.
Speaker 6 (49:24):
So God bless him.
Speaker 7 (49:26):
You know.
Speaker 19 (49:26):
Teams can do what they want with them, and but
I'm I'm tired of him. To tell you the truth.
Speaker 2 (49:31):
Good stuff, Jimmy, keep the faith, buddy, appreciate you listening
out there in uh In in Boston, uh Mark and
Maryland Joint. Just welcome into the Bernie Fratto Show. Marco,
are you.
Speaker 6 (49:43):
I'm fine, Bernie, thank you so much. Okay, I thank
you the best. Okay, Uh the toush push. I'm a
Reskin fan. Okay, I didn't say Commanders. I'm a Riskin fan.
I've been watching since the septies.
Speaker 2 (49:56):
Love it. I love it.
Speaker 6 (49:58):
So they had a play. Joe Gibbs is probably top three,
top five coach in my opinion. Okay, because he did
it with three different quarterbacks. Super Bowl. Okay, Now we
had a play called it tro the counter tray. Okay.
Couldn't nobody deal with it? Okay. Now, I don't like
(50:18):
to just put the toot bush because it's an Eagles thing.
But all I'm saying is if you can't stop it,
you can't stop it. Okay. It's about execution. You know.
If the league had a problem with it, ban it. Okay,
I mean, I mean, if you can't stop it, you
can't stop it. You know what I mean. Other other
teams can do this, but just because they execute better,
(50:42):
you can't analyze them. Okay if you want to, and
they God damn excuse me.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
So perfect common sense, Listen, you make perfect.
Speaker 6 (50:53):
Shakur Sanders. I still think it's a byproduct of his
father because he was so so, so controversial. But but
he's not any news. You know. It's a lazy argument
to me. And I don't know what the third point was,
but but refresh my memory.
Speaker 2 (51:14):
Tom Brady any unfair a game?
Speaker 6 (51:16):
Oh, Tom Brady is a minority owner. This is what
he's supposed to do. Okay. I don't think there has
any advantage. I think it's bs okay to be honest. Okay.
I mean anything Tom Brady can say is not quite
good information. These teams know this already, so I think
(51:38):
it's about nothing.
Speaker 2 (51:39):
Okay, Mar, good stuff, excellent call. Thank you, Christ and Boston.
You're up next. Welcome in.
Speaker 16 (51:47):
Hey, how you doing, Bernie thinks shoving me on my friend?
Speaker 2 (51:50):
All right, nice to talk to you, Thanks for calling.
Speaker 8 (51:53):
All right, so Berndie.
Speaker 16 (51:54):
I just wanted to touch on the on the the
touch push thing. I just want to touch on that.
I think a couple of others I've already made points
about it. Let me let me give you a scenario.
My friend, you got you've got to play going on,
you know, the call hot quarterback gets the ball two
guys run up behind him, lift him up, put him
on their shoulders, and carry him down the field.
Speaker 21 (52:13):
Does that sound fair?
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Well no, but no, but it's all it's also not legal,
my friend, so interestingly really understand.
Speaker 16 (52:23):
But we understand Bernie that that is not legal because
when we're talking about ford progress forward progress should just
be what you are able to do under your own power.
Are you able to juke? Are you able to run?
Are you able to move and avoid defenders? Are you
able to yourself get that ball downfield.
Speaker 11 (52:40):
And make the play.
Speaker 16 (52:40):
If you've got other players behind you shoving you, pushing you,
aiding you in getting downfield, that doesn't feel fair to
me at all. It feels like it feels like if
we were playing soccer and then we just had all
twelve guys in the team just form a circle around
the one dude with the ball, and then he just
took it all the way down to the net. Like
you know what I mean, Hey, I feel like to
touch push something. Maybe they should look at it, Maybe
(53:03):
they should. Honestly, you want to you want to show
some athletics, how about you jump over those defenders and
go get that point at the goal line.
Speaker 5 (53:11):
That's what it should be.
Speaker 2 (53:13):
And it's not always on the goal line either. So
you bring up some good points. That's the only one
you want to check out on tonight.
Speaker 16 (53:19):
Yeah, that's all. That's all, Barnie. Thank you very much,
my friend.
Speaker 2 (53:21):
All right, Jeff and Denver joins us. Welcome in, Jeff,
how are you hey, I'm good.
Speaker 20 (53:26):
I've called in before.
Speaker 2 (53:28):
Good show, yep, I remember you.
Speaker 20 (53:31):
But the touch push thing, leave it. Football is all
about designing a play the other team can't stop to gain.
Speaker 14 (53:39):
Yards, is it not?
Speaker 2 (53:41):
Yes, it is. And it's simplest common denominator. No one
can argue with what you just said there.
Speaker 20 (53:48):
Okay, So if Philadelphia has a play that you can't stop,
why not run it?
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Leave it alone?
Speaker 15 (53:55):
If you can't.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
Okay, you're not You're not wrong. But here's here's the
thing is, I'm just trying to maintain an objectivity stand
on line. The bottom line is Jalen Jalen Hurts gained
that one yard on that you know, and they got
the first down, they clinched the twenty to seventeen win.
But on the play right Drew Trankwell, a Chiefs linebacker,
(54:16):
ripped the ball out of Jalen Hurt's hands, but Ford
progress had already been stopped, and Dean Blandino says, I'm
done with the push to a touch push because they
don't know how to officiate it. So I've just said,
we've got all this Michigan gofs entering the conversation, you
got the floor, continue on, Jeff.
Speaker 20 (54:33):
But if it's a play that you can't stop ninety
what is it ninety six percent or ninety eight percent?
Speaker 2 (54:38):
There? Yeah, when the Eagles run it, I mean if
Buffalos run it many times to not the great success.
I think Miami. I gave these stats back in March
when they voted on it. There are multiple teams that
haven't tried to employ it. They just don't do it
anywhere nearly as well as the Eagles. And I'm with you.
You figure out how to do it, or figure out
how to stop it.
Speaker 20 (54:55):
Continue right if I'm If it's a play you can't
stop my play, then I figured out a way to
do something you can't stop. That's what the game is
all about.
Speaker 2 (55:04):
Leave it alone.
Speaker 20 (55:05):
I love it. It's like, you know what we're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
You see the formation.
Speaker 20 (55:09):
We're not going to tricky. We're not going to fake
a running back around the end, throw a pass or anything.
We're bringing it bring you know.
Speaker 2 (55:16):
It is mono a mono, No, no doubt about that,
No doubt about that. Hey, anything else on Tom Brady
or Shore Sanders Tom Brady.
Speaker 20 (55:24):
I've never been a fan of mister Uggs, a man,
you know, doing a personal for a lady shoe company. No, No,
that's mister.
Speaker 2 (55:35):
No, all right, are is it on your door?
Speaker 6 (55:39):
Yeah? It's like, well, I mean Hayton did it.
Speaker 20 (55:42):
There's a lot of quarterbacks that said they don't want
to go anywhere else.
Speaker 6 (55:45):
We didn't.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
Okay, all right, that's just right, that's just right. I
appreciate you. Good stuff, Jeff, and I know you've called before.

joined by Ron in Rochester. Ron, thanks for hanging on.
What do you got for us tonight?
Speaker 9 (57:07):
Bernie HALLI, It's always a pleasure to hear you when
I'm drunk at three in the morning.
Speaker 2 (57:11):
Uh, good to hear.
Speaker 13 (57:15):
So.
Speaker 9 (57:15):
I grew up in Rochester and my dad was a
very Pennsylvania and my mom was from Pittsburgh, so I
was a Steelers fan was a little kid. I said, Dad,
why don't they just take Swanny and just one big
guy throw Why don't they get Jo Green to throw
him over the goal line. He said, well, that'll be
it'll be pretty rough out old brother Swanni.
Speaker 6 (57:35):
But that's the point.
Speaker 9 (57:37):
Recently they said, you can't climb on a guy the
block kick. Same thing. You can't push a man to
help in the play.
Speaker 7 (57:46):
He can't do it.
Speaker 9 (57:47):
So that's where the illegality comes in. Pushing him is
where it comes in. Same thing. They stopped climbing on
the guy block kick. My dad didn't tell me why
they couldn't throw Swanny over the line, but you know,
he just says it's going you know. So that's the deal.
You can't hate a per player by doing that. Second
of all, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are convicted cheaters.
(58:09):
Why are they're giving him any slacking is beyond me.
They are convicted cheaters. Oh I've got to tell you,
I am the man who says sports radio, did we
have to talk about this for We're.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
Not gonna have time tonight because I got so many callers.
But you saved that good stuff for another time, Ron,
because I got to keep moving. But anything, I promise,
I'll let you do it at some point. But tonight
we're just jammed. Friend. Anything on Jeff Sanders, anything on Sanders.
Speaker 9 (58:36):
I think he's talented, but you know they have to
force it.
Speaker 2 (58:39):
I mean, he was going to be drafted allegedly by
the Ravens. Do you believe it? He said no, don't take.
Speaker 9 (58:44):
Me because because his head was so big at the time,
he thought it could be starting right away.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
You know what I mean, Well, it could be. It
could be it.
Speaker 9 (58:54):
Hey, by the way, Syracuse, thank god they want today.
I hate the nil. I feel like the Pittsford by
Chad with the Way challenge.
Speaker 2 (59:04):
Not all right? Ron, Hey, good stuff, got a lot
of good stuff in there. Junior in Michigan Joints is
welcome and Jr.
Speaker 18 (59:10):
Hey, how's it going?
Speaker 2 (59:12):
All right?
Speaker 18 (59:13):
First of all, Brady, I don't think he should be
doing that with the doing the headphone thing and all
this stuff.
Speaker 6 (59:24):
I mean, if.
Speaker 18 (59:25):
He's he's maority owner of a team, he shouldn't need broadcasting.
Speaker 5 (59:31):
I don't think so.
Speaker 18 (59:32):
I'm gonna totally against it.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
There's a lot of people that don't like the optics.
So anything on your door, anything on the toush.
Speaker 18 (59:40):
Push, Okay, I'm gonna go there.
Speaker 15 (59:43):
Uh Shakur.
Speaker 18 (59:45):
He's a talented kid, and hopefully.
Speaker 15 (59:49):
He does better and hopefully his future is good.
Speaker 18 (59:53):
As far as the towch bush, as far as I
gotta say, First of all, I'm a Cowboys saying I
don't care for it. But did you see today Oklahoma
or not Oklahoma Auburn actually try to put it in
a tight end.
Speaker 6 (01:00:07):
In the backfield.
Speaker 2 (01:00:09):
Well, okay, that can happen, but I kind of want
to standpoint there big, so I let anything on the topics.
Speaker 20 (01:00:13):
We got, Okay.
Speaker 18 (01:00:14):
I'm just saying, I mean it's even going to the college.
Speaker 2 (01:00:18):
Well, the thing is, the play is just technically legal.
It's just how do the fans feel about it? How
do the callers feel about that kind of stuff?
Speaker 18 (01:00:25):
I just don't like the idea of like, well, like
other people say, you know, it's play and simple.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Right, you're in the junior I hear you, man, good stuff.
It's just we're we're jammed, and I want to make
sure I get to everybody. Thank you for your opinions tonight.
I appreciate it. Another Broncos fan in Colorado joins us again.
Welcome back in.
Speaker 15 (01:00:47):
How are you I'm doing fun? How about yourself?
Speaker 6 (01:00:50):
Good?
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
What are your thoughts on our topics tonight?
Speaker 15 (01:00:52):
Well, you know something, before we get into three tops,
I just tuned in, so the other three I'll I'll
address that.
Speaker 14 (01:00:59):
But you don't.
Speaker 15 (01:01:00):
I think there's a pivotal game tomorrow in the EFC.
And I'm a huge Broncos fan. But the Chargers if
they can mow through the EFC West and go three
and oh and you know what Kansas City's looking at?
Speaker 6 (01:01:14):
Oh and two? Wow?
Speaker 15 (01:01:16):
But anyway, go Broncos. Anyway, the other three topics, all.
Speaker 2 (01:01:22):
Right, go ahead, we got to walk through these fast,
big fellow. You got Schudor Sanders, you got Tom Brady.
And then touch.
Speaker 6 (01:01:27):
Push touch push.
Speaker 15 (01:01:30):
If it's illegal, if they can't stop it, t bad,
do something to combat it. If they can't do it,
if it's illegal, Okay, chadar standers. Obviously, I'm from Colorado.
I'm a huge fan of his. I hope he does
won the NFL. The third one. Tom Brady, I don't know,
you know, if he's a leaking things. If he isn't,
(01:01:51):
I really don't know if he is. Well, it's illegal opting.
Speaker 2 (01:01:56):
The optics don't necessarily bother you too much, is what
you're saying. It's not the feel like a real uh issue.
Speaker 6 (01:02:04):
Something that something that's the key issue?
Speaker 17 (01:02:06):
Uh NFL.
Speaker 15 (01:02:08):
Do you want to investigate it? And I don't know.
I don't know enough about it. I don't have an
opinion when Sair enough appreciate you in the past, you
know the patriots in the past. Yes, they have taking advantage,
they have cheated. I hope Brady is ipe. He's smarter
than that. You know, the situation, that uh coach situation.
(01:02:32):
Don't do something stupid, Tom, Okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
But all right, thanks so much for checking. I appreciate
you man. Bring you back out to Vegas. Kyle, Kyle,
what's happening, buddy. I'm sure you got some strong thoughts
on this stuff today.
Speaker 17 (01:02:44):
Oh listen, I'll call you back in March when you
did the original topic for the chest push and voting. Yeah,
then it was Hey, if you can't stop it, just
join it. At this point, every call of that I've
heard has said there for it, but they really didn't
give a good explanation. The reason why I'm for it
(01:03:06):
is because if it's third and three, your wide receiver
catches the ball and you know it's a yard short,
and the offensive line comes and pushes him as he's
getting gang tackled, that's a legal play. They will give
forward progress for that play. They will stop it if
he stood up and he can't move no further. It's
(01:03:28):
the same ramifications for the toush push. My only thing
moving forward with it now that the league is claiming that, oh, well,
we missed this false start. Is the only reason why
this topic is being brought back up is it was
a blatant false start. But there's a false start almost
every play in the NFL. That is the absolute truth,
(01:03:48):
and that is the absolute optic subject. Quickly, Sugar Sanders
young man, I wish nothing but the best. I really
don't got nothing to say about him at this point.
I'm tired of the story. I wish you know, either
the media will stop talking about it and just let
the young man build upon their success, or just give
the man a chance somewhere else and or create a
(01:04:08):
developmental leak. NFL, for crying out loud, we've been asking
for We'd watch it. We sit here and wait all
year round for you to come back, you know, four
or five months out of the year. So just just
create a developmental league so you have guys to be
able to take the next step that aren't quite ready
for the NFL. Lastly, Tom Uncle Tommy, Uncle Tommy. I
love you, dude, but sometimes you what's my favorite saying,
(01:04:31):
have several seats, young sir, you are you are in
the eyes of the public. For one. Number two, everything
is weak nowadays, So if you have a private phone
call that you think was private, it's not so private.
So the Steve Bummer approach, put it in, put it
in the air where only you and five other people
(01:04:53):
allegedly are in the room together, I said, allegedly. Just
clearing that up. Uh, if you are going weak information,
you know who leaked it versus a phone call that
gets passed on, that passed on and passed on, or
whatever the inside information may be. At the end of
the day, love you Burne, you have a great show.
If you can't stop the church push, don't get married.
Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
Yeah, I can't disagree with that. And from from what
is worth, it's funny I didn't really put two and
two together about Brady I didn't. I don't really care much.
We actually a couple of owners who called it out
and they they just they don't like the optics. Okay,
simple as that. H Dick and Dayton Joints. Just welcome
back in and Dick, I know you've called before. What's
(01:05:35):
up man?
Speaker 15 (01:05:36):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (01:05:36):
How you doing, Bernie good? Yeah, I just was telling
your screener I'm more of my family was from Cleveland,
you know, in that area. I just think the Browns
need a new coach or they're worried about these quarterbacks.
But I've grown up with them, listening to them, you know,
and folt with them for years. But I want to
(01:05:58):
say something actulations to the Guardians. They were way out
of it there for a while. And maybe the Reds
could have a nice seventy one series. And about Joe Burrow,
It's gonna be hard for the Bengals this year, but
you know, it's just one of those things. I guess,
you know, Well, there's our tour of Ohio.
Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Any thoughts on this touch push matter?
Speaker 8 (01:06:22):
I always was, you know, it's been a big rivalry
for the Browns and the Bengals, but I've never been
a Pittsburgh fan. But I can remember when Bernie Kozar
was there. He was the only one who could ever
beat then beat the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Well, they'd have gone to the super Bowl if four
and a Spider had dropped the ball in the gold
Line story for a different day. So anything on Shudor
or Tom Brady or the toush push. You want to
see a van Like a lot of folks.
Speaker 8 (01:06:48):
Tom Brady, I think's doing a good job, you know,
of doing the you know, the the games. I like
Tom Brady. I think he's doing good. But I just
thought to check in.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
All right, Thanks Dick, appreciate it. Man for you Ohio fans.
You covered the gamut there. Uh Mike the Leprechaun from Boston.
A lot of folks from Boston calling in tonight. What's up, Mike,
good morning?
Speaker 7 (01:07:12):
Yes, different days and does cover a lot of books
to them.
Speaker 19 (01:07:16):
To be honest, Yes, the tooth push.
Speaker 7 (01:07:20):
I think there's only one aspect that would make it better.
The players can't go airborne. Airborne, either on defense or offense.
That's where people get crushed at hard. So it should
it should be basically a ground place.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
Well, the tooth push is earlier ground play. There there's
no issue there, Mike. No one's going airborne on the
toot push anything. They're going underground.
Speaker 7 (01:07:42):
People are launching themselves in the air.
Speaker 2 (01:07:46):
All right, You have any thoughts on Tom Brady. One
minute he is in meetings, pre production meetings getting information.
Next meeting is in the coach coaches box, which seems
to bother a lot of people.
Speaker 5 (01:07:59):
And wouldn't need to.
Speaker 6 (01:08:00):
It's a conflict of interest.
Speaker 7 (01:08:02):
And as a as a commentator, he's very very vanilla,
very ordinary, and he's going to reON next summer. Do
you hear that there's a flag football tournament in Saudi area?
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
Yeah, yep. Saw that.
Speaker 7 (01:08:16):
Sanders is a spoil brush. Maybe he will get a
little bit of humility and grow up.
Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
All right, Mike, thanks for checking in tonight and h
eight seven seven nine ninety six sixty three sixty nine
where Cardio dropped off. Would love you to hear from you,
and the same with Colin in Virginia. And I want
to remind the folks that with the iHeart Radio app,
you can stream us wherever you happen to be. Catch
(01:08:42):

so that Fox Sports Radio is one of your presets
in the iHeart app, so we'll always pop up at
the top of your screen. All right, we're moving on
(01:09:04):
with a raucous midnight hour. We've got the situation on
the Tousch push. I kind of I kind of agree
with Kyle. I mean, if you don't like it, stop it,
join it, figure it out for yourself. Where we ran
into controversy last week is you have a situation where
it's one thing that the Again, this is just something
(01:09:26):
having to do with with people's observations and what the
newspapers are writing. Sure enough, the touch push happened. They
the chiefs weren't able to stop it. But the controversy
started when the referee seemed to miss something. And they're
in Lives Degra area. Uh, Bruce and Santa Monica. Let's
get you in here. You're up next. Welcome in.
Speaker 15 (01:09:47):
How are you good?
Speaker 22 (01:09:48):
How you doing? Regarding the Toush push. I think to
move up in the NFL coaching hierarchy over many many years,
you have to be a kool aid, drink king, Stepford
Sheep and ingratiating Tony.
Speaker 5 (01:10:03):
In order to move up.
Speaker 17 (01:10:04):
Any Anybody that.
Speaker 22 (01:10:05):
Goes against that in any way is branded as a troublemaker.
And that's just the way it works. You're not it's
a brilliant play, but you're branded as a troublemaker if
you do anything different.
Speaker 2 (01:10:18):
Yeah, fair anything on sdor Standers or Tom Brady and
the many hats.
Speaker 22 (01:10:24):
Of course, yeah, I can put them together. I'd say
that Tom Brady and Shudor Sanders are both uh jerks
who have a disturbing sense of of of entitlement and
think that they have a can do whatever they want.
Speaker 20 (01:10:44):
That's all all right.
Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
I appreciate you wearing in tonight. Don't be a stranger.
We do this every Saturday night at twelve midnight Pacific time.
When we continue Tony and Alabama, you will be up next.
I am Bernie Fridder. We're coming to your line from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked.
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:11:08):
We're back in the Bernie Faddle Show Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio studios take you up to three am Pacific, six
am Eastern. We are wrapping up on what's been another
outstanding mind that hour thanks to the callers. We go
out to Alabama. Tony joins us from Alabama. Good evening,
Good morning, Tony. How are you.
Speaker 23 (01:11:28):
I'm doing great?
Speaker 21 (01:11:29):
So how about yourself?
Speaker 2 (01:11:30):
Doing great? Thank you?
Speaker 23 (01:11:31):
I just want to say you have a great show
and really enjoy listening to you.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
Thank you, sir.
Speaker 23 (01:11:36):
On the toos push you got to be able to
stop it. Be like Tampa Bay, they're the only ones
that seem to know how to stop the play. I
have no problem with it. If it's legal, it's legal.
Speaker 2 (01:11:48):
Yeah, it's all about pat level and leverage. I mean,
you got a quarterback that can bench press the city block.
That kind of gives you an advantage. But you're not wrong.
Speaker 23 (01:11:55):
Continue on on your door standers. He probably did tell
the Ravens not to drop him.
Speaker 6 (01:12:04):
Good kid.
Speaker 23 (01:12:04):
I wish nothing but the best. I think he's talented,
and he gets way too much criticism because who his
father is, and it's it's sad to see that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:15):
Yeah, I think the personalized attacks are warranted. I question
whether he's a major league quarterback. And there's guys dropping
like flies. Trust me, if he's gonna play, he's gonna
get it. Tysonvagent is in the league. Okay, he probably
gives the Bears a better chance of winning the Caleb Williams, So,
I liked what you brought up in terms about how
people are personalizing shod Or and which is probably unnecessary.
(01:12:36):
And that's conflated with you know his father, who's a
Hall of Famer, and then you know what expectations are
based on what he told us to come out of college.
Continue on, Tony.
Speaker 21 (01:12:46):
As far as Tom Brady goes, his football IQ is
off the charts. I'm not sure what he really could
gain by visiting what all these other organizations. I really
don't see what the big deal is.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
I don't think it's a big deal leader. Thanks checked in, Tony.
I think it's a tempest in the teapot. The only
thing is is there's an injury, a potential cluster injury
to a certain position, maybe something like that. But I think
we're really splitting. Here's here, all right, Odell and Virginia
wrap things up for us tonight on the midnight hour.
Thanks for hanging on. Good evening, welcome in.
Speaker 14 (01:13:20):
Yes, how you doing, Bernie good?
Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
Doing well, sir you?
Speaker 14 (01:13:25):
Yes, I'm doing fine. Yes, I'm a die hard mind
the Dolphin fan. I think that they need to clean house.
I think the dealing Madson needs to go, the coach
need to go, and the tout push. I'm for the
tout puts. One thing about the trist bus. If your
offense can do it, go for it. It's the defense's
(01:13:46):
bill to stop the offense. So I'm one hundred percent forward,
and it's your duel. I think he's a good guy,
and I think he's talented. I just think the NFL
just needs to give him a chant. As far as
Tom Brady, I think he's doing a good job.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
All right, thanks for checking in, Odell, appreciate it again.
We do this. I know you're in the Eastern time zone.
I believe Virginia. If not, well, regardless, you can all
we can all figure it out. We kicked this off
midnight Pacific every Sunday, well Saturday night into Sunday morning.
A couple thoughts, I'd like to weigh in on the
push toush. For one thing, I'm hearing that even though
(01:14:29):
the NFL voted on it, last March, and it's passed
by a couple of votes, and we talked about it
then whether or not it would pass or not. Now
we're getting some controversy, but it turns out that there
the NFL may not vote on it next year and
during the off season. But here's the deal. There's a
push for stricter officiating, okay, but that doesn't mean they're
(01:14:51):
going to ban the play in twenty twenty six. Even
Adam Schefter said, quote, there's no assurances that the toush
push that issue will be brought up for conversation or
a vote by the NFL is offseason. In fact, one
source told Schefter, it's my understanding that there was a
real hot conversation last week that was raised because the
(01:15:14):
emotions involved in the teams involved, and because people are
so emotionally jacked up about this thing, there is a
thought that they may even need to wait a year
so cooler heads can prevail. Remember, it only passed by
two votes last May, and it was proposed by the
(01:15:35):
Green Bay Packers president CEO Mark Murphy.
Speaker 14 (01:15:38):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
What's interesting is Murphy retired three months ago, four months ago,
so he's no longer involved. So someone's gonna there has
to be a predicate someone's gonna have to propose this
vote again, and it's going to require some team or
some other team or somebody in the NFL to put
a proposal forward. And Adam Schefter said that there's been real,
(01:15:59):
no real movement to make it happen through the first
two weeks of this season, even though the way the
game ended against Kansas City last Sunday, really I think
left a lot of left the bad taste in a
lot of people's miles. Okay, last year the vote failed,
(01:16:20):
but there were ten teams that opposed it. Okay, the
Eagles or checked at the teams have voted for it.
Let's not do that roll call's that's too boring, all right,
the Eagles, I think the thing to notote and a
lot of callers aptly pointed this out. Other teams are
trying it, they're just not successful at it. And you
(01:16:42):
have a situation where member Kellen Moore, who was with
the Eagles last year he's our offensive coordinator now he's
with the Saints, tried a touch push Week one against
Arizona and they ended up getting flagged for off sides. Meanwhile,
the Eagles continue to use the play. They have great
six they seem to be buttoned up. They ran it
(01:17:02):
six times against the Chiefs in one game alone. They
got four first downs in a touchdown. But here's where
it came under scrutiny. What appeared to be multiple miss
start calls on the play in Week two false start calls.
One miscall was pointed out actually by Tom Brady we
were talking about on the Fox Sports broadcast. Another was
(01:17:23):
flagged by the NFL, and a memo that was sent
out to all thirty two teams heading into this week,
according to a writer for the Washington Post by the
name of Mark Maski, and the NFL told officials in
training share what teams officials should call these plays tight.
That's what is being called right now. So if you
heard our referee guru, Joe Gibbs, well, I think it's
(01:17:49):
going to be interesting to see how this is officiated
Sunday against the Rams. Again. Don't get your hopes up.
There doesn't appear at this time to be anybody putting
forth a proposal next year for this to be voted down. Now.
One of the reasons this really became a firestorm this
week is because It happened in a game between the
(01:18:12):
Chiefs and the Eagles, and the conversation that stood out.
The Eagles were facing third and one, the game was
winding down, just a couple minutes to go, and everybody watching,
everybody in the stands knew what was coming next to
the tush push. Sure enough, Jalen Hurts gains one yard.
That's their signature play. They clinched at twenty to seventeen
win against the Chiefs. But on that play, a linebacker
(01:18:36):
for the Chiefs, Drew Tranquil seemingly ripped the ball out
of Jalen Hurt's hands, but Ford progress had already been stopped,
so instead of getting to turnover, the Kansas City believed
they deserved ball game over game set match. But as
the referees reviewed the play, Dean Blandino, the Fox TV
broadcast rules analysts, was asked by commentators what he saw.
(01:18:58):
He just FASEDID I'm done with a push push guys.
He was frustrated for different reasons. He just basically said,
it's hard to officiate. I think frankly, he's tired of
seeing the Eagles run their specialty play against the Chiefs,
which they ran seven times apparently all right, and it
may ultimately lead to the push toush, which they've been
doing the end of the push toush, which they'd been
(01:19:19):
doing since twenty twenty one, and Hertz did it against
the Saints and it worked, and they've been doing it
ever since. They have the secret magic formula on how
to do it. The Eagles only have to you know,
every fourth and one situation, you know what they're going
to do. But it is arguably, even though it's not exciting,
even though people think it looks like rugby, even though
(01:19:40):
people hate it because most of the time it's working
against their team, ask Eagle fans. They don't hate it.
It's arguably the most effective offensive play of the past
few seasons. And so look, it wasn't bothering people when
the Eagles only ran it once a game, twice a game,
but seven times in one game. Now you're starting to
get people's attention. So we'll see where it goes. Great
(01:20:03):
job by the callers tonight, as always coming up, Mark
Medina Medina Magic at the top of the hour. Keep
it locked the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:20:11):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
That's right. You heard the man. The Bernie Fraddles Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle. We're
come to your line from the Fox Sports Radio studios
here in Las Vegas. Will take you up to three
m Pacific, six am Eastern. We're gonna switch carriers ever
so quickly because we're not that far away from NBA
training camp and yet another NBA season in which the
storylines are numerous, and that is why we bring in
(01:20:36):
our guy. Yes, three words, it's that time. Little Medina Magic.
Mark Medina are Fox Sports Radio NBA guru joins us
pretty much every Saturday night here on heading into Sunday
morning on the Bernie Frattles Show. Hey, Mark, how you
ben man? It's been a couple of weeks, but we
(01:20:56):
got a lot to talk to you tonight.
Speaker 12 (01:20:58):
Yeah, I'm sure a lot of free us to discuss,
if you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
Yes, we'll get to that. I have to start Mark
with the Clippers because since we last talked, I've done
some intrepid investigating on my own and when I'm not
going to cast dispersions or draw any conclusions, it just
doesn't look good for the Clippers. Tell us what you know,
and where this might hit.
Speaker 12 (01:21:21):
Well, it definitely doesn't look good for the Clippers because
of the extent of reporting from Pablo Torri, which you know,
has a lot of documents that show that Steve Ballmer
made a pretty significant amount of investment and aspiration and
now defunct company, and they gave Kawhi Leonard several different
payments for no show commitments. But you know, I think
(01:21:44):
as far as the NBA is concerned, Adam Silver has
made it clear that it's the burden on the league
to prove all this evidence, and so you know, they're
taking it seriously because they've hired an independent law firm.
But the way Adam Silver's talking about it, he's been
more of a cautious litigator than the aggressive litigator. And
(01:22:08):
I think the fascinating thing about Adam is that, you know,
some might say he's not afraid to make the tough decisions,
like you know, when he banned Donald Sterling for life
and essentially forced him to sell you know, the Clippers franchise,
But he also has a track record of doing things
only if everyone agrees with him and as long as
(01:22:30):
the league makes money out of it. So that's that's
kind of the tough thing that's interesting in what's going
to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:22:37):
Yeah, I'm kind of with you. It doesn't feel like
this is an Armageddon thing. And what people want to
do is is jump to this conclusion about maybe even
voiding Kawhi's contract. I can't see it getting that far.
Do you agree, Mark?
Speaker 12 (01:22:54):
I could see anything. I could see thrown the kitchen
sink at the clippers with draft picks avoiding things. I
could also see the slap on the risk treatment. I
think if they uncover things that are clearly out of
balance of salary cap intervention, circumvention and you know, flies
(01:23:15):
in the face of Adam Silver talking about how he
wants competitive balance and he wants to be able to
rear teams regardless of market size. If the evidence is
in front of him. I don't think he has any choice.
But what I can say, even though we don't know
what the NBA can prove, and I understand why Adam
(01:23:35):
Silver is not going to, you know, assume a party's
guilty until proven innocent. I am disappointed in his rhetoric.
I wish that he said something along the lines of
we take this seriously and he would affirm their belief system,
salary cap rules, competitive balance instead. During the Boarding governors meeting,
(01:24:01):
I just heard a bunch of heamen hauling and legalities
and words salads that put people to sleep. And so
what that means moving forward, I don't know. Because we've
seen Adam Silver operate on both ends of the rubber
band here, so it's all going to be about what
can they prove with evidence.
Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
It appears to be a follow the money case. That's
the problem.
Speaker 12 (01:24:25):
Oh, it totally is followed the money.
Speaker 2 (01:24:28):
And so you feel that some kind of hammer's going
to drop. So with what little we know, it's sort
of ironic. We know a little bit, we seem to
know a lot, but we're not inside the Ivory Tower.
But we have enough sources to paint a picture real
quickly in ten seconds or least. Where do you think
this really ends up?
Speaker 12 (01:24:48):
Buy a ticket? It so unpredictable. It's not just follow
the money, it's what can they prove, not what they know,
and a lot of times that's more difficult to execute
well one.
Speaker 2 (01:24:58):
Hundred percent, And I don't think the NBA has an
appetite for something that looks bad. But look, this has
to be adjudicated because if Silver's, you know, honest about
wanting fair and competitive balance, well here's a chance to
prove it.
Speaker 6 (01:25:15):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:25:16):
I can't wait to see how the way the West
shakes out. And you did some reporting this week on
on the preparation of one Cooper Flag. Take us behind
the curtain there and what's going on with Cooper Flag
as the MAVs are really counting on him.
Speaker 15 (01:25:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:25:30):
I talked to Cooper Flagg's trainer, Matt McKenzie for an
interview for RGI dot Oregon. He was pretty extensive about
what his off season regiment has looked like ever since
Summer League ended. It's very extension. It's been focusing on
doing everything he can to have a clean bill of
health and avoid hitting the rookie wall with strength training, conditioning,
(01:25:53):
you know, really working with the training staffs on how
to put on some good lean muscles so he could
adapt the physicality in the NBA. He's working a lot
on his ball handling to prepare playing first without Kyrie
Irving because of his ACL injury, but then with Kyrie
Irving knowing that he'll have to be adaptable with his role.
(01:26:14):
He's been working a lot on trying to get clean
looks from three point range. That's one of the weaknesses
that Mark Cubanic's knowledge that Cooper Flagg has, so he's
trying to turn that weakness into a skill. The other
thing is he's doing a lot of drill work not
just with his trainers and coaches, but some of his
current Mavericks teammates in the gym on just kind of
(01:26:35):
two man games because he knows that he's going to
have to be adaptable with knowing how to play with
Anthony Davis, knowing how to play with Kyrie Irving, Derek Wiley,
the second Klay Thompson, you go down the line, I
think when you add all these things up together, and
the fact that he met up with Dark Noviski, he's
studied film. Cooper Flagg is doing all the right things
(01:26:55):
in the rookie with having kind of an old school
approach towards trying to prepare for his rookie season.
Speaker 2 (01:27:01):
Mark I just got this premon issue when the April
rules around on Kyle Irving's back, the Menas are going
to advance further in the postseason than the Lakers are.
And by the way I understand Dennis Smith Jr. Agreed
to a one year deal and this guy was a
top ten pick a few years ago. Does he helped
the Mavericks this year?
Speaker 12 (01:27:18):
Yeah, he helps. I mean it's all about roster depth.
I don't think he was going to dramatically change one
thing or the other. But I think that the Mavericks,
when you'll get the big picture, they're a very intriguing
team because on paper they have a very dangerous team
that could make the case to not just go deeper
than the Lakers, but really every team in the Western Conference.
But the ultimate question is health. Kyrie Irving, we know
(01:27:42):
he's going to miss the beginning of the season with
the ACL injury. Most times, players that return from an
ACL injury aren't their full selves until the following season.
Anthony Davis, we know his injury history. Same thing with
Klay Thompson, Cooper Flagg. He's projected to be a Rookie
of the Year, but even his mat mackenzie projected that
(01:28:02):
it's going to be an up and down year with
how he navigates, you know, handling an opponent's best shot
and matching up with you know, current NBA stars. He
is a rookie after all, so they're a very intriguing team,
but also a team with a lot of question marks,
so it's very high risk, high reward.
Speaker 2 (01:28:22):
Yeah. I agree with all that, and to that end,
every team has their questions, including the Golden State Warriors.
And it looks now, after all the back and forth,
Jonathan Kaminga might take the qualifying offer.
Speaker 20 (01:28:35):
Yeah he might.
Speaker 12 (01:28:36):
I mean he has until October first to do so.
Though right now it's been a stalemate because very early
on the Warriors to give him that qualifying offer, they're
only giving two years forty five million, And you know,
then they were saying, hey, we'll entertain a signing trade,
but it has to be to our advantage, and what
the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings were offering weren't
(01:28:59):
the things that interested the Warriors. And the reason why,
you know, Jonathan Kaminga is limited here is he's a
restricted free agent, so the Warriors have the right to
match any offer, and if they are going to do
a sign and trade, it has to be on their terms.
He can't just leave outright. So what it's gotten to
(01:29:19):
the Warriors have presented different offers, bumping up to three years,
but now there's I think point of contention from Jonathan
kamingas in that, as Anthony Slater for me has fan
first reported, he wants to get a player option, not
a team option. That way, it's less likely that his
contract's going to be traded. I think ultimately it has
(01:29:43):
been about having that flexibility so that the Warriors can
make those deals moving forward because they don't know what
his trajectory is. They drafted him at number seven four reason,
but they've also been conflicted for a reason because he's
a very great a athletic player. He can finish at
the rim. He's developed a little bit as a defender
(01:30:04):
and outside she here, but he's very inconsistent. His decision
making is off the map. And I think the bigger
thing is even for people within the Warriors that have,
like Jonathan kaminga his playing time decreased last season simply
because Jimmy Butler's on the team now, and so I
think moving forward, it's very hard to pencil when what
are as minutes going to be on in consistent basis.
(01:30:26):
He'll be part of the rotation, but I think the
Warriors internally with Steve Kerr, look at him as a
player that might have DMPs depending on matchups and everything else.
And so I think that all those things explain why
Jathankminga has an agreed to role, because he wants to
have a role that's a lot more consistent than what
he's had with the Warriors.
Speaker 2 (01:30:48):
Mark lasting for me, I want to make sure I
got this calendar straight. For some teams, training camp opens
up in two or three days for the rest September
twenty ninth, and then before you know it, I believe
Opening nighte he's October twenty first. Yeah, you got it
is that's all.
Speaker 12 (01:31:02):
That's all opened up a little bit earlier if they're
doing some overseas trips. But most teams will start up
media day on September twenty nine. But it's right behind
the corner.
Speaker 2 (01:31:13):
And I know you'll be excited right before Halloween, you
and I maybe we'll spend the whole four hours on
the NBA Cup this year.
Speaker 12 (01:31:19):
Indeed, and let's not forget Bronnie James is plus to
win most and proof flier.
Speaker 2 (01:31:25):
You got me, you got me. I was gonna bring
it up as my punchline, but good on you man,
you beat me, You beat me off the dribble there,
you beat me, you froze me.
Speaker 12 (01:31:35):
It's one of many times. I'm sure we'll have a
robust debate about Brownie looking.
Speaker 2 (01:31:39):
Forward to it. It's my whole existence, Mark great stuff
is always look forward to having you next week. It's
upon us.
Speaker 12 (01:31:46):
Likewise, take care, mam.
Speaker 2 (01:31:47):
That is Mark Medina, Medina Magic. Here him every Saturday night,
here on the Bernie Frattle Shows heading into Sunday morning.
As hey, the NBA is upon us right and there's
never any shortage of news, lots of news. I can't
wait for some things. There are real genuine honesty, goodness
storylines as we head end of the season, and we'll
start to chop those up. But football is king right now.
(01:32:10):
We're eight hours and forty seven minutes away from the
kickoff of Week three coming up. Got some interesting thoughts
on Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, and yes to a tongue
of alula in which oh and two teams should be nervous.
I'm Bernie Frader. We're company line from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked right here and
(01:32:32):
listening to the Bernie Frawdle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (01:32:34):

the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
We're back on the Bernie Fraudle Show Fox Sports Radio.
Coming up just a little bit after the Bottle of
the Hour, the Fantasy Files. You want to stay tuned
for that couple of tidbits here. I've always like to
a but when he plays a team with a winning record,
He's ten and twenty forty touchdowns, twenty nine interceptions. He's
(01:33:06):
got a passer rating of eighty five. The Dolphins, they
were part of the zero to two conversation. Now they're
part of the to three conversation. I think you can
just about stick a fork in them. And someone one
of the callers mentioned they are going to clean house. Yeah,
I think Mike McDaniel's days are numbered. Baker Mayfield a
guy I've always like, Why doesn't anybody remember they joined
(01:33:27):
the team in Cleveland that had been one in thirty
one and got into the playoffs within two years? Guess
what his completion percentage in game winning drives? He did
it again weeks one and two, two game winning drives
during those drives eleven or fourteen, completing seventy nine percent
of his passes, one hundred eleven pass yards, and a
passer rating of one hundred and twenty three point five.
(01:33:50):
When the situation demands greatness, can you be great? Baker
Mayfield is objectively is look Patrick Mahomes. They'll have a
limo pick him up when he's ready to be inducted
into Canton. But this season we're gonna get to the
O and two teams. And I don't think the Chiefs
(01:34:11):
are cooked by any stretch, but you have to be.
You can't not not notice this this season. Mahomes Is
passer rating is eighty two, that ranks twenty eight among
NFL quarterbacks. His completion percentage is fifty eight percent that
ranks twenty eighth. Yards per pass down to six point
five ranks twenty first. Yards passing yards per game only
(01:34:33):
two hundred and twenty two that ties for seventeenth. He's
got two touchdowns at one interception. That ratio ties for
twenty first. Now I get it, I get it. Travis
Kelsey looks like he got old overnight. That's just a fact.
Mark from Minnesota tweeted in something a while ago about
his stats this year and they're non existing, and he
(01:34:55):
dropped the ball in the goal line and no Xavier Worthy.
Oh she wich Rice. I get it. You gotta have horses.
But he's still Patrick Mahomes right. If he needs help
like everybody other human quarterback, well that changes the you know,
the dynamic a little bit. But we have this conversation
(01:35:16):
every year heading into Week three. Teams. You know, when
you go er and two in the NFL, it can
make life very difficult to reach the playoffs. But that
doesn't mean winless teams after Week two aren't able to
still contend. Most won't. Some will. I think everybody remembers
the Dallas Cowboys in ninety three when them and Smith
(01:35:37):
set out for two games they were zero and two.
They came back won the Super Bowl. I know my
buddy Steve Hartman remembers in nineteen ninety two the Chargers
started out owing four, they came back and went to
the playoffs. But that doesn't mean you want to do that.
The math on owing two teams reaching the playoffs is
not good. And by the way, since the NFL merger
(01:35:58):
AFL NFL merger in nineteen seventy, there are only three
teams in fifty five years who started OH to two
and won a Super Bowl, Meaning there's not a lot
of historical data to suggest anybody who hasn't won a
game yet in twenty twenty five will magically turn it around.
All right, Now, most of the top teams you started
(01:36:20):
OH to one last week got in the win column
win two. But there were nine teams that fail to
earn a victory and now they're in the dreaded OHO
to two hole. Actually, one of those squads is Miami.
I'm not even gonna mention them because they're now O
to three. Now the Houston Texans are trying to divide.
Let's put it this way. Let's put it this way,
(01:36:44):
which winless teams can still be contenders and which ones
are cooked. I'm going to start with the one team that,
frankly I think is still a contender. How could they
not be? It's the Kansas City Chiefs. It's been over
ten years since Kansas City started zero two and they
came back and Andy Reid's second year on the job
(01:37:04):
in twenty fourteen, the fall of the Chargers and the Eagles,
that's nothing to be ashamed of. Their first two weeks,
but the bar is always very high for the Chiefs.
They view their success in terms of getting to the
big game and winning it. They want Lombardi trophies. They
don't want second place or ninth place trophies. This is
meet the Fokkers. Now. There's a good opportunity for Kansas
(01:37:26):
City to get off the schneid later day. They're six
point favorites when they take on the Giants, and they
should be getting healthier over the coming weeks. And who
might be the biggest beneficiary of Joe Burrow injury. It
could be the Kansas City Chiefs because I think they're
on their way to a wildcard birth. I don't see
them overtaking the Chargers, but I still think they're a
contender now. The team they play Sunday, the New York Giants.
(01:37:51):
They were the team closest on the list to avoiding
an O two start. They had a very inspired performance
in Dallas. Russell Wilson turned back the clock, look like
Russell Wilson, Seattle Russell Wilson, and he was one of
the biggest winners of the week. But they lost that game,
and that I think just about kills the New York
Giants chances of getting to the playoffs and not the
(01:38:12):
least of which here's one of the key reasons. They
got a brutal upcoming schedule again Kansas City later today,
then the Chargers at New Orleans Philadelphia. Brian Dables team.
I can see them easily one in five, maybe two
and four at best, with an all to three division record.
Thanks for participating take the home version of the game.
(01:38:34):
Yes they're giving an effort. Yes they have a good
defensive front seven. Yes, maybe they have hope with Jackson Dart,
but look, it ain't enjoy the enjoy the color change
in New York. That's about all there is doing. Joy.
How about the Tennessee Titans. Now, the NFL did can
Ward no favors by scheduling two elite defenses to face
the Titans in their first two games, So no one
(01:38:56):
should be shocked Tennessee is owing two. But the Titans
fans can be in courage is the fact that to me,
cam Ward has looked impressive. He's actually shown some real flashes.
He had an insane play to record his first touchdown
pass against Los Angeles last Sunday. The Rams now a
reminder of why cam Ward went number one. Tennessee also
(01:39:18):
has a decent defense is going to keep them competitive,
but this season is entirely about getting cam Ord developed.
There's no question the Titans are cooked as far as
preseason potential. But if Ward looks like the guy they
got our number one overall, by the end of the year,
they're going to be out of quarterback hel and the
Tennessee Titans may be something to look at in twenty
twenty six, but not this year. Cleveland, forget it. They
(01:39:41):
harassed their defense, harassed Joe Burrow in a Week one loss,
but they screwed everything else up, missing extra points, missing
field goals, creating stupid penalties. They should have beaten Cleveland,
should have beaten Cincinnati in Game one, but that's what
they do. There's only Joe Flacco's look fine, there's only
so much he can do to keep Cleveland in games
and all they do. The NFC North is tough this year,
(01:40:02):
and that's going to make it life hard for Kevin
Stefanski to dig out of the so two hole. You
got three NFC you know, tough contests coming up, and
the Pittsburgh Steelers over the next month. The Browns could
easily start zero to six. I think they'll go to
Dialdon Gabriel next and then maybe we'll see shoot or Sanders.
You'll get his chance. I already mentioned Miami complete no
(01:40:25):
show in Week one against Indianapolis, played better against the Patriots,
found a way to lose to Mike Rabel, and they
were driving to tie the game Thursday night. It was
it was a solid play that the Dolphins getting plus
eleven and a half. The books came out big. I
had them small. Why because you don't give a divisional
team double digits in a national televised game, standalone game.
(01:40:49):
But Miami's got one foot in the grave of the
un Pana pills. So does the other New York Jets team.
Any you may have thought there might have been some
positive science Aaron Blennon, and then the Jets look like
after game one it was a fagaze. It always is,
with all due respect. Justin Fields now, he's what fourteen
(01:41:10):
in thirty two in his career. He's not a major
league quarterback. He threw for twenty seven yards last week
and ran for thirty nine, worst start of his career.
Left the game of the concussion. Gee, I wonder why
I like Justin Fields. He's a consummate professional. Now you
got Tyrod Taylor. Maybe he gives them a better chance
to win, But no one really expected to be No
one I know expected to be the Jets legitimate contenders.
(01:41:33):
And Week one was a fageze. So forget it. They're
just not. It's not in the cards for them, all right,
So forget it. Jets, did I forget anybody? Forget it?
Jets forget it, Dolphins forget it, Browns forget it. Titans, Chiefs, Yeah, Giants.
Not so much on Chicago Bears. No one expected things
(01:41:54):
to be easy for Ben Johnson. But again, with all
due respect to Caleb Williams, he likes to play playground
football too. To my friends, scheme adaptability, scheme adaptability. He's
about the worst of a fit for Ben Johnson system,
as you can imagine. Again, don't tell me, show me.
They're in maybe the most competitive division in football, and
(01:42:15):
Caleb Williams is inconsistent and the Bears defense isn't any better.
We'll see what Dallas does in Chicago, Carolina, in New
Orleans the same situation. I'm not gonna pick on them.
They're in transition, they're trying to break in new quarterbacks.
We'll see where they go. All right, folks, get your
pens and pencils ready, you Fantasy font you, fantasy team owners.
(01:42:38):
Is it's up next, It's time for the Fantasy Files.
Speaker 3 (01:42:42):
Fantasy Files with Brandon Deutsch, your go to fantasy football segment.
Speaker 6 (01:42:48):
Are you got one going when?
Speaker 24 (01:42:51):
Welcome back to Fantasy Files. I'm Brandon Deutsch and we're
going to go into s start suggestions today. We did
well last week, We're gonna do well again. Now that
never been more confident about anything in my life than
Jordan Mason going up against the Cincinnati Bengals. And here's
exactly why Jordan Mason is now a Bell Kyle running back. No,
(01:43:11):
Aaron Jones. Aaron Jones is on the IR. Cincinnati is
one of the most atrocious run defenses in all of football.
You can make sure that Jordan Mason is in your
lineups over guys like Traves y Tianna this week, over
guys like Chase Brown your second round pick, over guys
like Ashton Jenz.
Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
Believe it or.
Speaker 24 (01:43:30):
Not, I'd sit James Connor on that note against San Francisco. Now,
Robert Sala has done a heck of a job. There's
no doubt about that. With that defensive line specifically, now
their secondary has some issues. Kyler can exploit that in
that matchup. But I'd be shocked if James Connor has
anything more than forty or fifty yards rushing, and I
don't even think he scores a touchdown. Trade Benson keeps
getting snaps and not just that. James Connor had eleven
(01:43:51):
for thirty four yards last week. Eleven carries thirty four yards.
One touchdown saved his fantasy day. He had one catch
in that game two weeks ago. The touchdown saved is nd.
Now you could argue, oh yeah, touchdowns, yeah, they're great,
but he is touchdown relyant, and we want to stay
away from fantasy players that are so touchdown reliant because
we want guys that can catch passes like an eight
chan like at James Cook in really good offenses that
(01:44:13):
will utilize him. And it's not good that James Connor's
over thirty years old, because that's when we tend to
see unless you're Derrick Henry and you're just a freak
of nature in a generational running back, that's when we
tend to see the decline in running back. So I
can imagine that James Connor is going to have a
bad game against San Francisco and start this trend of
poor performances. Now I'd start Kenneth Walker against New Orleans.
(01:44:34):
Kenneth Walker the last time Zach Sharboney did not play,
and he's doubtful for this game. He had twenty five
plus touches in that game, which is insane. The usage
is going to be off the charts. He's coming off
of a thirteen hundred and five yard performance with the touchdown,
averaging almost nine yards per carrying that matchup. Zach Charboney
was averaging like one yard per carry in that game.
Now he might not play. New Orleans is one of
(01:44:55):
the worst defenses in all of football. It makes too
much sense to not be starting him now. Of course,
we got to get to the sit, and the sit
is going to be JK. Dobbins going against the Chargers
the next one. The next sit we're going to is JK.
Dobbins against the Chargers. There will be no revenge game
for him. I know he's talked about it and they
didn't re sign him, and there was a whole thing
(01:45:18):
about how he started last season versus how he ended,
and it didn't go well toward the end, and who
knows what was going on. And now they have Omari
and Hampton and they have Najee Harris. They obviously it
didn't end the way JK. Dobbins wanted to. I'm sure
he wanted to stay in La whatever. Now he's in Denver,
Denver great city. But this is an offense that's going
to utilize RJ. Harvey more over the rest of the season.
(01:45:38):
I'm not saying it's going to be this week because
the Chargers have a great defense. In fact, they're eighth
against the run. I would stay far away from both
R J. Harvey and JK. Dobbins this week. It makes
no sense for that to be happening for them to
be in your lineup, and make sure to also sit.
If we're on this topic of sitting Kyen Williams against
the philadelph Eagles, he was at one of the best
defensive lines in the league. Now, if K didn't score
(01:46:00):
a touchdown or get two catches the last few games,
he doesn't even have five Fantasy points ten and thirteen.
If you look at his last two games and quorum
stole a touchdown from him last weekend, so I cannot
trust Kyen Williams against one of the most premier defensive
lines in all of football. Now, let's go to some receivers,
because those were pretty much all running backs, right. Tetro
(01:46:22):
McMillan going up against Atlanta. No aj Terrell lock it
in start. He has had five catches in sixty five
plus yards in back to back games. They had one
hundred yards last week. Bryce Young is going to utilize him.
Tedro McMillan has a monopoly on this offense more so
than Scheuba Hubbard. He is Bryce Young's guy. I know
Hunter Renfro has a good game here and there, a
big game waiting, But Tedro McMillan is that dude. He
(01:46:45):
continues to get better coming off of seventeen fantasy points.
Another guy I would start is Ricky Piersall against the Cardinals.
Everybody in the Cardinal secondary is injured. That's why you
start Ricky pierce All. Very simple. Now, he didn't have
the game we wanted him to last week. I think
he had four for fifty six, about eight or nine
fantasy points. The week before he had about sixteen seventeen
fantasy points, right, So that's what we won for him.
We we're hoping he gets over that fifteen point threshold.
(01:47:06):
I think he gets a touchdown in this game and
close to one hundred yards with Mac Shones starting doesn't
even need to be Rock Perdy. I'd also start George
Pickens against the Chicago Bears. Now, we saw Pickens finally
get his first touchdout of the season last week. He
was excellent. And this is a defense Chicago. It just
gave up fifty two points and they're ranked in the
bottom ten of defenses overall, not just against the pass
(01:47:27):
in football, bottom five against the pass, and so is Dallas.
So this is gonna be a high scoring game. I
think you can start players on both sides. So not
only is George Pickens the start, but Romadunze the superstar himself. Yes,
I'm calling him a superstar because he is going absolutely crazy.
DJ Moore is an afterthought in that offense. That's how
good Roma Donze is. Make sure to start Roma Donsay
in that game. And that is it for Fantasy files.
(01:47:48):
Let's go win our matchup. I'm Brandon Deutsch back to
the Bernie Fratto Show, all.
Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
Right, so you want to tune in every week to
mint not miss this set. You'll hear it on the

for all the best plays and up to the second
injury news tended to Countdown to Kickoff presented by bet
MGM every Saturday and Sunday morning right here on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. So what does it
really mean to start hing to? Does it really mean
the NFL teams? You ask a lot. If you really
want to know, I'll give you a quick summary of
how many NFL teams have done in the last twenty
(01:48:36):
five years when they started out all and two. Him,
Bernie Frattle, We're coming to line from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to
the Bernie Fradle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Hi, We're
back at the Bernie Fraddle Show. Fox Sports Radio Comedy
Live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. We
are just eight hours and seventeen minutes away from NFL
(01:49:00):
Week three. Top of the r Man Gambling Lou Loof
and Akara, one of the most respected handicappers, and all
the Las Vegas I'll have thoughts on four key plays
coming up. You want to be around for that. Lots
to get to. In the last hour, We're going to
talk about two key matchups that I want to emphasize.
How has Green Bay done it with their defense? Are
(01:49:22):
they the best team in the NFL. We'll talk about
that right now, and I'm going to close the show
with a tribute to Clayton Kershaw. I know that people
don't necessarily value pitching wins as an analytic darling as
they say, and all the saber metric guys think that
(01:49:44):
wins are an overvalued stat. I don't you win games.
You find ways to win games. When Dola Ryan once said,
you have the mark of greatness is when you win
and you don't have your best stuff. And I don't
know a pitcher who's ever taken him out doesn't care
if he gets the w all right, and whenever you
have a picture that leads the league and wins. What
(01:50:05):
are they lucky? They're a bad pitcher, they just happen
to have wins. No, it's a thing, but believe it
or not, there's only one all time great pitcher. I'm
talking about pitchers who won a couple hundred games, and
you won't believe this list. There's only one great pitcher
who never had a sub five hundred one lost season.
We'll share that coming up. So what does an er
and two start mean the NFL teams? You ask a lot.
(01:50:29):
I'm going to give you a quick summary. Now, by
the way, it was two thousand and two that the
NFL created their current thirty two team alignment, realignment as
it were, in terms of how the divisions were structured.
So since two thousand and two, that's twenty four seasons,
(01:50:52):
one hundred and ninety teams total of one hundred and
ninety teams started out zero to two. Guess somebody of
those teams just made the playoffs. Forget how what they
did in the playoffs. Just made the playoffs eighteen out
of one hundred and ninety. You don't want to start
oh and two. The Chiefs might be the redheaded step
(01:51:13):
child on this list of black sheep. I just gave
because you had Carolina, the Bears, Cleveland, Houston, Miami, New
York Giants, Jets, Tennessee, and of course Kansas City. The
Dolphins are now oh and three. They're done. The Chiefs
don't think are They're the only ones, but its history
tells us. In twenty four seasons, only nine percent of
(01:51:33):
the teams who started out oh to two made the playoffs,
and most of them look twenty four years ago. Ben
ro the Steelers were ten and five, ten five and one,
but they lost in a divisional round. Same year, there
were two teams that did today are two teams, the Falcons.
They also lost in the divisional round. Now the Eagles
(01:51:55):
the following season lost in the NFC Championship. I they
lost to the Carolina Panthers. And that was a team
that went on to lose the Super Bowl to the Patriots.
But they started out ozing too, then finished twelve and four,
but they lost to the NFC Championship. The four mentioned
Kansas City Chiefs took three more years, four and zero
and two team did it. The Chiefs finished nine to
(01:52:17):
seven and six. They lost in the wild Card. Finally,
the two thousand and seven New York Giants, the most
improbable team started out ohing two. They beat Tom Brady
and then undefeated team with the tire you know, the
helmet catch and Eli Manning and all the things go
along with it to win. I guess that was the
Super Bowl forty one. Yeah, it was Super Bowl forty
(01:52:40):
one because I covered Super Bowl forty in Detroit. Or
maybe it was Super Bowl forty two. Maybe the game
was played in two thousand and eight. It was two thousand
and seventh season, that's right. They were the San Diego
Chargers at the time. There were three teams, believe it
or not, three teams that started out zero and two
in two thousand and eight. The Chargers, Dolphins, and Vikings
(01:53:04):
all lost in their first game. The twenty thirteen Carolina
Panthers ended up going twelve and four, lost them divisional round,
and right on down the line, the Colts they did it,
The Texans did it, The Seahawks did it. The Miami
Dolphins did it. In twenty sixteen. They lost the wild
card round after after the Giants won the Super Bowl.
(01:53:27):
Any O and two team that has made the playoffs
and By the way, any of the teams has started
owing two last season twenty twenty four, none of them
made the playoffs. But one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen,
thirteen straight teams since the New York Giants won the
Super Bowl by starting zhing two to seven. Guess what,
(01:53:51):
All thirteen that followed them didn't win a playoff game,
So you guess. I guess you're getting the point. You
don't don't want to start oh to two. One team
that did not start oh and two, they started two
and oh and man, they look damn good doing it.
The Green Bay Packers, did you see this comment? I
(01:54:13):
know they added Micah Parsons, and I know they've had
a bunch of first round draft choices in the last
several years that are coming into their own and they're
still young and hungry. You know, Jordan Love's come into
his own. They've added weapons on offense. I didn't. And
by the way, Michael Parksons isn't up to snuff yet.
(01:54:35):
He's not even in real game shape yet he's already
wreaking have it. I do not think it's hyperbole to
say that the first two weeks I'm just talking about
the Packers defense. Now that might that might be one
of the best defenses I've seen in a decade, maybe longer.
The numbers bear that out. Green Bay's defense as a whole,
(01:54:58):
only allowing three point seven yarnds per play. That's the
eighth best mark. I mean, it's not a two week season.
I get that, it's the eighth best mark through two
weeks among the six hundred and forty cumulative seasons played
by teams in the past twenty years. That puts him
(01:55:19):
in very rarefied here. And here's what's really interesting. The
Packers defense not only showed up and showed out, they
did it against two of the league's most capable offenses,
the Washington Commandos and the Detroit Lions. And I don't
want to hear about the Lions two offensive coordinators, two
(01:55:39):
coordinators being gone. They're gonna be okay, Johnny Morton, he's
gonna be fine. They're using the same terminology. Yes, they
don't have you know, Ben Johnson there, But if Ben
Johnson could just wave a magic wand then why does
the Bears offense look like a drunk crossing an icy street. Okay,
the Lions scored fifty two week last fifty two points
(01:56:00):
against the Bears after managing only thirteen against Green Bay.
I think that's less an indictment on Detroit and more
of a recognition for the Green Bay packers, who clearly
are getting after it. So what are they doing? How
are they doing it? Well? Wasn't that long ago in February?
Did you see what Vic Fangio's Eagles did in the
(01:56:21):
Super Bowl to Kansas City. Put Green Bay uniforms on,
and that's what you're essentially seeing. Okay, green Bay has
an elite pass rush. But even if their pass rush
doesn't get home, and it gets home plenty, they've got
a secondary made up of guys that can plaster receivers.
They have five defensive backs who all play with great instincts,
(01:56:45):
in great athleticism. That is a hell of a parlay.
You get to the passer with an elite pass rush
and you cover up the receivers. Now, did I mention?
Speaker 6 (01:56:57):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:56:57):
I didn't. Green Bay also leads the league in sack
They also pressure opposing quarterbacks on forty four percent of
snaps despite playing with five defensive backs eighty percent of
the time. That means you're only rushing four that's the
most you're gonna rush there. I if you really break
it down and watch green Bay closely, this is a
(01:57:18):
team that has a nice combination of speed and power,
and all of a sudden, you've got this tremendous explosiveness.
It's already shown up in Michaeh. Parsons and he hasn't
even started playing full games yet. I think he played
what's sixty percent of the snaps week one against Detroit
and a little bit more than that week two. So
when you have combination of speed, power, Michah Parsons, who
(01:57:42):
is commanding a double team already, and many of those
players and still manage to get into the backfield vic
Fangio's style of elite pass rush, You've got a secondary
of studs who can plaster you. They're gonna RecA it now.
Even when Michaeh Parsons fails to get home. Green Bay's
four man pressure is so potent and so formidable and
(01:58:05):
so robust. They're forcing quarterbacks to get the ball out
quickly before a play can form, doing it with a
cover two defense so a safety can come downhill and
attack the football. Yeah, it's a nightmare for teams. Now,
let's not bury the lead. Michael Parsons presence has managed
to make everybody better around them. That's the way these
things happen. A guy walks into the locker room and
(01:58:27):
everybody looks up and says, all right, we're gonna get
behind you and follow you. The two biggest beneficiaries are
probably their defensive tackle DeVante Wyatt and their number one
quarterback casey On Nixon. Now they're kind of having career
years already in two games, and I don't see any
reason why that can't continue. Why already has two sacks
(01:58:50):
and five quarterback hits. Nixon leads the league in pass breakups.
But it's not just those true, Okay, Their standouts are everywhere,
and they grade well, I mean, they do these things
now on Pro Football Focus, even Xavier McKinney has been strong,
even though he didn't get the best grade. And finally,
you have to give a tremendous tip of the cap
(01:59:11):
to Jeff Haffley. Someday here Dave Wantstet talk about Jeff
Haffley and how he started a pit many years ago.
He's their defensive coordinator whose background is as a defensive
Backs coach, and I believe he's responsible for their improved secondary.
Now Green Bay is about to completely fully unlock Michael Parsons.
So could green Bay get even better? Well, I think
(01:59:34):
they can get even better. We'll see if they do it.
Come it up, gambling, Lou, keep it locked, we'll talk
NFL some more. It's the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:59:46):
Door listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:59:49):
That's right to hear the man Bernie Fraddle Show keeps
rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fradderwick, coming line
from the Fox Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas
for just seven hours and fifty nine minutes away from
NFL Week three. Nobody better to bring in. You've heard
him on my show many times. He's a fan favorite.
His clear, concise, deliberate way of communicating shows through and
(02:00:13):
his research is impeccable. And let me stop, I say, well,
let me introduce him. It's scamb loof and Akaro following
him on Twitter at gam blue and Lou. Let me
start by saying, today, darn it, I thought you Nebraska
Cornhuskers were about to do something to turn the corner
on the program and they just couldn't quite close it out.
Speaker 25 (02:00:31):
Bernie, good morning. I really appreciate you having me in
love to visit with you, especially this time of year
in the NFL. Yes, I am on Nebraska, but I
never grew up a Huscar fan.
Speaker 2 (02:00:45):
That all the way back.
Speaker 25 (02:00:47):
It goes back to being in high school and only
being offered a half a scholarship. That's how small of
a person I am. But I will say this, after
twenty five thirty years of real futility in Nebraska, I
think everybody was ready to see them rise up and
win a big game, especially at home against a nisent opponent,
(02:01:11):
a well named opponent, and dog on it. They just
couldn't do it. I was disappointed for him. They're just
not ready to get there yet. If anything, I come
away with a little more respect for Michigan. I'm not
a big college football fan or I don't spend much
time watching it, but I was sure was impressed by
Michigan and the Nebraska is going to be there. It's
(02:01:34):
just a it's an evolution to win. It doesn't happen overnight.
Speaker 2 (02:01:39):
And it was on the day they were celebrating the
thirtieth anniversary of their national championship team. But I digress.
Let's get to the business at hand. I want to
talk to speak to some games that you've got an
eye on, and let's go to Washington where the Commanders
are are hosting the Raiders. And apparently the Raiders have
become an incredibly trendy player. I've seen they opened up
(02:02:00):
plus three and a half. Am I mistaken? Or is this?
The Raider has been steamed and it's now crossed through
the key number of three, and you can now get
the Commander's minus two and a half? Is that? Is
that an accurate line?
Speaker 25 (02:02:14):
Yes, That's exactly what I'm seeing. And I wasn't seeing
any of those threes, to be quite honest with you,
just as soon as you know, five or six hours ago.
So that's all happened since, and that's not uncommon. The
college games shut down, and what happens next people start
to absolutely look at the at the at the pro game.
Speaker 6 (02:02:37):
So I'm seeing.
Speaker 25 (02:02:39):
At a joint my DraftKings is currently two and a half,
and I'm seeing three even at Circa at the West Gate.
So I think with a little patience, we will see
some more two.
Speaker 7 (02:02:51):
And a half.
Speaker 25 (02:02:51):
Hard Rock's got a two and a half. And here's
really the basis for my handicap, Bernie. After three weeks
event I use a data service called DVOA. It's basically
an analytical way to look at the NFL. But for
(02:03:12):
the first three weeks of the season, I don't use
the data simply because there is not enough data to
really drop on. So I'm forced to handicap my own way,
I should say. And really, I've been a contrarian my
whole life. And when I look at this game here,
I'm very impressed with Las Vegas. I have them overseason
(02:03:36):
wins this year, and I think what Carol has brought
to Las Vegas is going to be good, solid defense,
running game, and stability. However, this is a situational This
is a situational handicap for me. Washington at home. Yes,
they're without Jaden McDaniel and in the look aheadline a
(02:03:58):
week ago, when that line came out, Washington was five
and a half. Now I'm seeing a full three point
discount for them, and that makes sense with Jaden McDaniels
out and Mariota in. However, Mariota is a very competent
NFL backup quarterback, Mariota.
Speaker 5 (02:04:17):
Used to play for Vegas.
Speaker 25 (02:04:19):
Players that play against their teams, their old teams.
Speaker 5 (02:04:22):
Love to have a good game.
Speaker 25 (02:04:24):
I really think Mariota is polished and ready to go here,
and I just think that the Washington continuity is going
to be too much for Vegas. And let's not forget
Washington enters this game off of Thursday. They've had ten
days to prepare. Las Vegas travels off of a Monday
(02:04:46):
night football game on six days off to the East
Coast for an early game, and by situational, that has
a lot to do with it, Sir.
Speaker 2 (02:04:56):
I like your analysis because I Marcus Mariota is will
be a candidate someday for the one game Hall of Fame,
and tomorrow later on today will be that day. I
agree with you, He's got that in him for one
game and then he regretses back to the mean. Meanwhile,
I'd be lying if I wasn't concerned about Gino Smith
because he threw it a double coverage all day against
New England. He got away with it. Not so much
(02:05:17):
money ed against the Chargers, and you're right, it's a
spot play with a difficult travel. The Raiders went to
New York week or Boston Week one came back and
now this I like your thought there. The Cleveland Browns
lou I happen to think, have a very stingy defense
and they're catching seven and a half points at home
where the Packers have started out like gangbusters. But this
(02:05:40):
could be a deceiving game, Sunday your thoughts.
Speaker 25 (02:05:43):
Yeah, and here's another one look aheadline seven and so
we've seen.
Speaker 6 (02:05:48):
That pick up half a point.
Speaker 25 (02:05:51):
And for a while in the Washington game, I liked
the ten day advantage for Washington. I have to recognize
that in this game, Green Bay is the team traveling
to Cleveland that does have the ten day rest. I
look for this game, Bernie to be nineteen sixty seven
Cleveland versus Green Bay. I see that because there's there's
(02:06:16):
gonna be as there's a great chance of moisture rain
in Cleveland. We've got rain that's touching ten to eleven
mile an hour, and I think the elements combined with
the fact that Cleveland's got a very underrated defense and
the green Bay defense is very stout. So between the
(02:06:37):
weather and everybody, I really like Cleveland, and by that
I mean the everybody. Thirty one percent of the bets
are on Cleveland, so everybody's bet in green Bay. However,
seventy three percent of the money is on Cleveland, so
Cleveland is seeing a much smaller amount of bets, but
(02:06:58):
a much larger amount of the size of the bat.
And that's always an indicator that gets me excited. So
Cleveland at home plus seven and a half, I think
in the elements for a team that's zero and two
at home, they're desperate, they want to win their game,
and they get a two and zero team in green Bay.
(02:07:19):
And I think that's part of why we're seeing the
line move up to that seven and a half is
because green Bay's two and o on Cleveland's oh on two,
and I.
Speaker 2 (02:07:28):
Think Cleveland is highly capable of hanging that number. Would
not be supported that that's going to be a fistfight
in a phone booth, and Cleveland will find a way
to probably screw it up. And I'll tell you what,
that's a lot of points. And when the balls in
the air, you want to be on the side of
the books, and I think that's who the book's going
to need. Lou the other game you've noted here the
Broncos catching two and a half against the Charger Chargers
(02:07:49):
another intriguing game, Chargers playing their third straight divisional opponent.
Your thoughts on that game?
Speaker 3 (02:07:58):
Yes, And.
Speaker 25 (02:08:00):
Bernie, what I really am trying to do here? And
I said when I opened up, I'm a contrarian better
and by contrarion, I'm dying to situate myself against the masses.
And boy, you want to you want to pick a
game for the masses, I'll just say it like this
and the circa millions, the Chargers are the highest picked
(02:08:24):
team in.
Speaker 2 (02:08:25):
That even though and a half.
Speaker 25 (02:08:29):
That's correct. That said, I'm getting nineteen hundred and thirty
seven contestants. There's only six hundred contestants on the Broncos,
and I'll be very happy to say that I am
one of those. I love the Broncos in this spot. Listen,
these two teams are the two teams I believe will
(02:08:50):
compete ultimately for the division title. I think Kansas City.
That's going to be a discussion we'll have here in
a few minutes. Second road in a row for Denver.
So we have to understand that Chargers are off a
Monday night football game when they were on the road,
(02:09:11):
and that's a thing for me Sunday night or Monday
night ballgame to turn around and compete the next Sunday
is a very difficult task you throw on the road
on a Monday, and it really compounds things. So a
division dog familiarity on the road. Two teams that if
(02:09:32):
they had it their way, they'd win a nine to
seven football game. I mean, neither of these two teams
really want to stare it out. Jim Harbaugh and Sean
Payton both want to play, you know, as you say, Bernie,
a fifth fight in a phone booth. So I look
for a tight, defensive game, a lot of running here,
and I'm happy to take the two and a half points.
(02:09:52):
I will say in the Westgate Gold Contest, this is
a three point the point spread, and so the Broncos
obviously plus three is a much better angle if you
can find that three. And I would encourage people to
be patient because I think you may see some threes
out there.
Speaker 2 (02:10:13):
I want to interject something else that I don't think
of you overlooked. We know when the Chargers lost for
Shawn Slater in August, that was huge, but they've got
eight guys an injured reserve. They lost Khalil Mack to
an elbow injury Monday night and now he's on injured reserve.
Will Disley is out Sunday, and multiple other Chargers are
(02:10:34):
nursing injuries. Your thoughts on how these cluster injuries perhaps
start to affect the Chargers starting later on Sunday.
Speaker 25 (02:10:43):
Yeah, I think they start to affect the Chargers just
by the style of football they play. They're a physical team,
as well the fact that it's only six days turnaround again.
I mean, you've got Disley, a tight end, a football
tight end out, a cornerback, a linebacker, and a safety.
(02:11:06):
So the cornerback and linebackers questionable. The safety is out.
That's you know, that's a lot of defense, and Sean
Payton knows how to dial that up. I think we
see a little bit of spike in the capability for
quarterback nicks for Denver, because if you don't, this is
(02:11:27):
going to be a tough game for them to win.
We're they're going to really need to see a lot
of o knicks and I think we're going to see
a lot of bow knicks handing off to oh, by
the way, ex Charger running back and now I'm going
to of course forget the young man's name, but the
starting running back for the Broncos played for the Chargers
last year.
Speaker 2 (02:11:47):
And real quickly. Not for nothing, Denver has to just
be chewing nails. The way that game ended in Indianapolis
last Sunday, I get I believe you get max effort
of the Chargers later or Bronco later today.
Speaker 25 (02:12:00):
Excuse me, Yeah, I'm glad you added that as a supplement, Bernie,
because they that was a jip job. They completely got
jipped there. I don't know how sometimes these NFL referees
get away with some of the stuff that they call.
I don't know if there's any repretation to that guy,
but that's a great point, and I do think there
(02:12:22):
should be a bur in the saddle of the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (02:12:25):
Finally, our Sunday night standalone game, the Chiefs, looking for
their first win, visit the Meadowlands if they still call
it that land. Six and a half points. That's a
big number. Now, it's hard for me to fathom that
the Chiefs will go zero to three, But I am
in no hurry to lay a touchdown on the road.
When you don't have your weapons, half your weapons are
(02:12:48):
gone nowhere she Rice, no Xavier Worthy, and I don't
think Travis Kelce can catch passes anymore. Your thoughts on
the Chiefs Giants, Yeah.
Speaker 25 (02:12:57):
That's exactly how I look at it, And I think
the Chiefs, I mean, I know what they were and
I know what they still have, But I don't know
that a thirty some year old tight end that's getting
ready to get married, a world class quarterback, and a
world class coach can overcome all the losses they've had
(02:13:21):
on offense as well. That offensive line has yet to
really find itself so far this year. The running backs
cannot get started, and if you take away some of
the ability of that offense to spread the field, they
become predictable. And without a run game, obviously you've got
the quarterback Young Mahomes, leading the team in rushing.
Speaker 6 (02:13:43):
So I think that.
Speaker 25 (02:13:45):
The problems for the Chiefs continue. I don't see a
quick way out until they get some speed at receiver back.
And while I view this is you got to like
Kansas City to find a way to win, but this
is the Giants opener. You can give me six and
a half on a team that's going to do their
(02:14:06):
best to get out of the zero and to hold themselves.
I really like the effort. I like the fact that
New York Giants are at home and in this game,
sixty eight percent of the bets on Kansas City, seventy
nine percent of the money on Kansas City. This is
to me, this is an everybody game, and I love
to try and find a game where the public or
(02:14:28):
everyone is at I'm happy.
Speaker 21 (02:14:30):
To be.
Speaker 25 (02:14:33):
Out in the cold, all by myself standing there with
the Giants at home plus six and a half or
by the time the game goes. Who knows if that
doesn't kick up to seven, you and.
Speaker 2 (02:14:45):
Me both brother. I had the Dolphins Thursday night. I
don't know how you give a divisional team double digits
on a standalone game, but that's a story for a
different day. I think laying six and a half is
a monumental number, would you lou just so quickly? Earlier
in the show, I touched on the Chiefs offensive challenges
and Patrick Mahomes and his stats. He isn't ranking lower
(02:15:07):
than twenty first in many of his offensive categories, and
his highest twenty eighth or twenty nine to many other ones.
So the Chiefs offense has been more abundant and we
all know why. Yes, it's been against two tough opponents.
I get it, the Chargers and Eagles, but the Giants
have a pretty good defensive front. Seven. Ever, so quickly,
do you have any thoughts on Baltimore Detroit Monday night?
These two teams played two years ago Baltimore one, thirty
(02:15:30):
eight to six in the same spot. It feels like
a shootout. I don't have it a feeling for the game,
though you.
Speaker 25 (02:15:38):
I've been going back and forth on this one. That's
why I avoided putting it on my list to And
I will say that at least Detroit they have to travel, yes,
but they get the extra day for Monday. That doesn't
give him any advantage because Baltimore does too. Currently I
am seeing looking for that.
Speaker 2 (02:16:00):
Right now four and a half, I believe, Yeah, okay,
And so this line on the look ahead a week ago.
Speaker 25 (02:16:09):
Was Baltimore seven.
Speaker 6 (02:16:11):
So really, what.
Speaker 25 (02:16:13):
Happened to make that line condense so much? Is Detroit
really that good? The last time Detroit Baltimore faced one another,
it was a boat race, And I tend to think
I tend to think that Detroit's going to have their
hands full here. And I think if the line was
closer to six and a half or that seven that
it was on the look ahead, i'd have an easier
(02:16:35):
time trying to get my arms around Detroit. But at
this juncture, I think I have to pass. I hate
giving points, so I'd never recommend given the four and
a half. I want to like the dog here. I
just don't know that I can give them a hearty
recommendation from this vantage point.
Speaker 2 (02:16:54):
Great stuff, you always pragmatic. Tell the folks where they
could find your good work.

research is impeccable. New track record too. Thanks Lou, enjoy

Radio seven hours and thirty three minutes until a packed
NFL Week three slate kicks it off. By the way,
be sure to check out Draftking sportsbook and official betting
partner of the NFL. Right now, use the promo code
(02:18:57):
Fox Game in capitol letters Fox Game. That's Fox Game
to Clint your special offer DraftKings, DraftKings, the crown is yours.
Don't forget. That's promo code Fox Game. Before we get
to the coaches in the hot seat, there are five.
I know it's not fair, but what's the old stupid joke.
(02:19:18):
The NFL stands for not for long. Two key matchups
that I think are going to have early season ramifications
and perhaps might set a tone, but we are early.
The first one involves the Rams at the Eagles. Now,
the Rams were catching three and a half. I think
a lot of Rams action has come in on one
(02:19:40):
of them. The line may be down to three depending
where you shop, but I know for fact this game
has stuck in the Rams craw since last January and
their divisional round meeting. Last January, the Rams came thirteen
yards shy of changing the course of the Super Bowl.
(02:20:00):
The Rams were down six with a minute nineteen to go.
Matt Stafford and his team they were stoped by Jalen Carter. Yeah,
that Jalen Carter, who spit it Dak Prescott on Moday
Night Football a week ago. But he can make plays.
He sacked Pressure Stafford on back to back plays. Now,
(02:20:24):
Jalen Carter may have clinched that game, but I think
it was Saquon Barkley who actually won the game. See
that's where I'm going with this. The Rams know that
they have to address that later today. Key matchup Saquon
Barkley versus the Rams run defense. This is why I'm
(02:20:46):
alluding to these key matchups that we have to watch now.
The Rams had no answer for the Eagles run game
last season. They allowed they played the Eagles twice, as
we talked about earlier in the show, they allowed five
hundred and ninety nine yards total rushing in those two losses.
And they weren't always just four or five yards in
(02:21:08):
a cloud of dust. Sequon Barkley, all by himself in
those two games, broke four total runs of over sixty yards,
scored four touchdowns, and averaged the staggering two hundred and
thirty yards per game. So all of those five hundred
and ninety nine yards, Barkley accounted for four hundred and
sixty of them. And of course I'm sure, Jalen Hurts
got his share as well, But I'm not gonna sit
(02:21:29):
here and give the rundown. So it's gonna be tough
duty for the Rams to go in there and win
this game. Outright, they can, I don't know that they will.
This isn't quite the same Eagles team. They're replacing six
pieces parts on defense, and they haven't thrown a touchdown
pass in their two wins and in a one game
(02:21:52):
of fair I think the Rams see this is like
a mini playoff game now, even though the Eagles, well,
they're really home field advantage. He's only with a point
point and a half in the National Football League now,
so he put these two on a neutral maybe the league.
The Eagles are a two point favorite, but here's the point,
they're still slightly better than the Rams. The Rams did, however,
address their biggest weakness this passed offseason. They signed a
(02:22:15):
couple of run stoppers. They got nose tackle poona Ford,
middle linebacker Nate Landman. So far, so far, the results
have been positive. They haven't allowed to run. The Rams
haven't allowed to run more than fifteen yards this season,
but they haven't faced Saquon Barkley, so I think the Rams.
(02:22:36):
I would expect that the Rams, who had one of
the league's worst run defenses in twenty twenty four and
still damn near almost got the Super Bowl, to forego
stacking the box against Barkley because he exploited that this
last season, this is a chess match, this is a
game to watch. Then three hours after that game kicks off,
(02:22:58):
the Broncos face the Chargers. Chargers get their first home
game in so far. Technically Brazil was a home game,
but you know it wasn't. Then they travel here to
Las Vegas two and l Chargers laying three against the
Denver Broncos, who I think are just livid with the
way their game ended in Indianapolis last Sunday. Their favored
(02:23:19):
the Chargers by three, despite the fact they don't have
Khalil Mack. As a matter of fact, Khalil Mack is
out until at least Week seven due to an hyper
extended elbow, and so far the preseason lost to their
star left tackle Ray Shawn Slater, who they just signed
to a big contract a few weeks ago, hasn't hurt
them yet. But the NFL is a game of attrition.
(02:23:45):
I think it's going to be very entertaining battle. It's
also a it's a divisional battle. Okay, Chargers playing their
third straight divisional game, and should they prevail, they will
have a stranglehold on the West. Broncos are one and one.
Interestingly enough, they win, they're two and one. Chargers are
(02:24:07):
two and one. Okay, yeah, a genius works your lock.
But they'd have the top spot in the FCU West
because they have the early tiebreaker over the Chargers. So
this is like a mini playoff game, all right, because
the Broncos don't want to start one or two and
have the Chargers three and zero. Key matchup JK. Dobbins
and RJ. Harvey versus the Chargers run defense now. In
(02:24:31):
Denver's two losses to the Chargers last year, their running
backs did virtually nothing. Gavante Williams had six carries in
twenty three yards and Dodro Gestin nine carries forty eight yards,
and that really didn't set the Chargers up well at all.
You run the ball, you open up passing lands. You
don't run the ball, you lose. That's the way it is.
(02:24:54):
You pass the score points, you run to win the game.
Slight advantage Broncos here, I think because these two units.
Remember I'm mentioning the Chargers run game with JK. Dobbs
and RJ. Harvey versus check that the Broncos run game
with JK. Dobbins and RJ. Harvey versus the Chargers run defense.
These two squads, these two units, they're trending in opposite directions.
(02:25:16):
Los Angeles is without Poon Afford, the aforementioned Rams Tackle
and Khalil Mack, two of their better run defenders who
played a key role last year. While Denver has gotten
out of the gate with some good running performances, especially JK. Dobbins.
He's had more than sixty yards in each of his
first two games, and RJ. Harvey has shown real flashes
(02:25:39):
of explosiveness. So should Denver be able to run the ball,
they can win that game outright. In Los Angeles, Chargers
look forminal. They have a lot of injuries, and we'll
see how how that ferrets out when the game starts.
But they're not healthy, all right. It's an unforgiving league.
(02:26:04):
It's a sought after job, it's a prestigious job. It's
a privilege to coach in the NFL. There's only thirty
two of those spots. And it's amazing how just two
weeks into an NFL season, for certain teams there's all
kinds of optimism and happiness, and for other teams there's
all kinds of panic. Because for every team that starts
on in too, there are teams that start going too
(02:26:26):
And as I've said earlier, ninety one percent of the
time those seasons go off the rails, meaning you don't
make the playoffs. Now, the teams that already appear to
have their season going off the rails have one thing
in common. Most of their head coaches were already fighting
(02:26:46):
for job security before the damn season even began. So
for these franchises that already have their coaching staff possibly
you don't want to write anybody's death, won't yet possibly
heading out the door, it only adds a measure of
six to the equation, and it check that adds a
measure of pressure because things can, things can unravel and
(02:27:08):
starts to feed upon itself on once the season goes south,
all of a sudden, you start hearing about, you know,
guys getting fired. It gets louder and louder and louder.
And for coaches on the hot seat. It never gets
any easier, and so it's just inevitable teams that start
to look like their ships are sinking as the season starts.
They're the ones that are in the spotlight, the lead
(02:27:30):
dog in the house clearly the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately Mike McDaniel,
who is popular, who's an excellent offensive coordinator. Hey, believe
it or not, he was twenty eight and twenty five
heading into this season, and now he's what twenty eight
and twenty eight. And I hate to say it, but
the Dolphins season appears to be over after three games.
(02:27:53):
They're off to an own three start. They get blown
out by the Colts, they play the Patriots, stuff find
a way to lose. They're driving for a tying score
Thursday night in Buffalo, and it happens again. The issue, though,
it's I don't know what happened to Tua. They gave
him the big contract. It's hard not to like to.
I don't know whether it's the concussions, whatever. Can't seem
to throw the ball down field anymore. Andreuries have heard
(02:28:14):
his progression as a quarterback, and the Dolphins and their
star players, well, I don't know. I'm not will never
say they quit on Mike mcdanel. It didn't look like
that way Thursday night. They don't look happy. It's obvious, okay,
And part of it is Mike McDaniel's act. Well, maybe
it's wearing a little thin. He's in his fourth season.
He's what, he's eight and twelve and now over the
(02:28:37):
last two seasons, never won a playoff game in four seasons. Yeah,
it doesn't look good. Meanwhile, no one can question Brian
dables proclivity as a coach, but he doesn't have the horses.
He's only eighteen and thirty four now, his winning percentage
of three forty nine. Every year it seems like Dables
on the hot seat, which is kind of a sign
of how poor the Giants franchise is run. And you
(02:28:58):
know the curse that seems to have Befallen New York.
The Giants played real hard last week in an overtime
launch of the Cowboys, but they're zero to two for
a second straight season. They just don't have talent on
the offensive side of the football and the offensive lines
of mess without Andrew Thomas. They drafted Jackson Dart in
the first round, but Russell Wilson bought himself another week
with a strong game against the Cowboys. The bottom line
(02:29:20):
is the Giants have a brutal schedule, so winning is
going to continue to be a challenge. It's hard to
defend a coach that's nine to twenty seven over the
last three seasons, even if the Giants will eventually turn
to Jackson Dart at some point. Look, they're in the
midst of a rebuild. Bable could survive it because general
manager Joe Shane, who hired him, is still around. But
(02:29:42):
it's ugly now. I don't know if this guy should
be on the hot seat. But Brian Callahan of the
Tennessee Titans, he's in his second season. He was three
and sixteen. He's threened sixteen so far. But I don't
think it's fair that he's on the hot seat. He's
only coached what nineteen games. Coaches have and fired sooner
than that, it has happened. But all of a sudden
(02:30:03):
you got cam Ward. He's learning on the fly, he
looks good, he's showing flashes, And that's a question that persisted.
But is Brian Callahan a good enough coach to see
his development? The Titans just don't know how to win games. Well,
that falls on coaching, and Callahan's been under the microscope
for his play calling and he's inability to challenge a
(02:30:23):
catch and seemed obvious in Week one, and the offense
was way at seeing throughout Week two. They're not good.
But the problem is Callahan may not be the guy
they could lift him out of the duldrums. Another guy
is only in the second season. Dave Knalis, who was
not standing offensive coordinator before he went to Carolina. Panthers
aren't exactly the most stable franchise easier or remember either.
(02:30:45):
Remember they took number one overall pick Bryce Young, and
through six quarters, I will tell you that this fire
Canally's the seat wasn't hot. It was on fire because
it looked like Bryce Young was continuing to struggle with
his progressions and progressions in his completed passes. I will
say this, though the fourth quarter was promising. Now Young
(02:31:06):
only ranks twenty nine out of thirty four qualified quarterbacks
and passer rating, but I'm not ready to give up
on him. Dave Canalis was a quarterback whisperer. He just
asked Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson in Seattle many years ago
when he resurrected his career. He also helped Baker Mayfield tremendously.
But the Panthers seemingly are regressing from last year. So
if Bryce Young doesn't get better and the team continues
(02:31:27):
to lose games in the NFC South is the most
winnable division in all of football. Not good now, Kevin Stefanski.
He's been Coach of the Year twice. He's a good coach.
He would easily be picked up by another franchise if
the Browns said goodbye. But unfortunately he's the head coach
of a match of rebuild and let's face it, they
(02:31:47):
can't seem to get out of the shadow of Deshaun Watson.
So there you have it. Best of luck to all participates.
Coming up, we wrap up the show, and this is
important I have to give. I have to give Clayton
Kershaw's props. I'm Bernie fradder Work, come to your line
from Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked.
You listened to the Bernie Fradle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(02:32:09):
Wrap it up on The Bernie Fraddle Show and special
thanks to our producers Mark and Brianna and yes, it's
an NFL Sunday, and we are seven hours and thirteen
minutes away from WINFL Week three. But Clayton Kershaw announced
his retirement this past week and pitched his final home
regular season game at Dodger Stadium. And in a minute,
(02:32:33):
I'm going to share with you I think he'll be
remembered how he should be remembered. But I want you
to know this because too much has been made of
all these wonks who say that wins are not really
an important analytic and all the sabermetric guys saying wins
are an overvalight stat. No, you pitch to win the game.
You play to win the game. I've seen many a
(02:32:54):
great pitchers who had a rough first second inning and
they're down four to one, but they hang in there
eight innings. All of a sudden it's tied in the
sixth inning, seventh inning, and they're battling, and they keep
their team in position to win or even win the game.
Show me a pitcher who doesn't care about getting a
w I'll show you somebody who's not a pitcher. Show
me a bad pitcher who's leading the league and wins.
(02:33:14):
No such thing impossible. But there's only one all time
great pitcher who never had a sub five hundred and
one lost season, I believe it or not. I'm about
to name sixteen Hall of famers, all of them had
at least one sub five hundred season. Bob Gibson, Lefty Grove,
Early Win, Whitey Ford, Sandy Kofax, Peter Martinez, Randy Johnson,
(02:33:37):
Walter Johnson, Roger Clemens, Tom Sever, Warren Spahn, Cy Young,
Christy Matthewson, Grover Cleveland, Alexander, Bob Feller, Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer,
Greg Maddox, Jim Palmer, Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, and even
Whitey Ford. That's a hell of a roster. But there's
only one player, all time great pitcher who never had
(02:33:59):
a sub five hundred and one last season, and his
name is Clayton Kershaw. That's an incredible statistic. And before
I close the show, I'll give you another incredible statistic
because he's the only one who's done this since nineteen hundred,
that's one hundred and twenty five years. I'll tell you
what else he did. But how will Clayton Kershaw be remembered?
And since we're broadcasting in Los Angeles, one of our
(02:34:22):
six hundred affiliates across the country and around the world.
In iHeart Media five seventy am the Great Blowtorch. There's
no doubt in mind mind that Clayton Kershaw is going
to be remembered as one of the greatest Dodgers of
all time. An incredibly intense competitor, not just down the mound,
(02:34:43):
his preparation, his focus, his dedication to his craft. He
was the type of guy that managed to combine a
certain intensity that earned him nothing but respect from his teammates,
from his peers, his rivals. And he's only been a Dodger.
(02:35:03):
He's only been a Dodger. I actually saw him pitch
against the Lansing Lugnuts. I think it was back in
two thousand and six when I'll still living in Michigan.
He knew that the guy was going to be something.
Kershaw not only had a real connection to his teammates
in the game, but he had an emotional connection right
(02:35:24):
because he had all the highs and lows that baseball
can offer. Issues in October, injuries, lengthy outages, bitter lows,
record high setting records, and in doing so, he maintained
his dignity as a one of a kind guy, a
picture of his generation, iconic figure, and he bodies what
it means to be a Dodger for Dodger fans who
(02:35:47):
really know that, And so in doing so, Kershaw also
forged a very deep connection with the team's fan base.
Now we know, Kershaw had multiple multiple statistical achievements, three
SYNG Awards, an MVP Award, five ERA titles, over three
(02:36:09):
thousand strikeouts in his career. That makes him alone right there,
one of the all time greats. Will Clinton Kershaw get
into the Hall of Fame? I say, it's way better
than fifty to fifty. You just don't know these days.
But whatever happens, he's already solidified his position as one
of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball history and
(02:36:30):
certainly in Dodger history. Why partly because Kershaw was a
model of excellent, excellent consistency. There's just new top, no
doubt about it. He dominated, He had a level of dominance,
and as I said a minute ago, he never had
a losing season his career. Frank Sinatter once said there's
(02:36:51):
something to be said for longevity. So Kershaw has been
around as a fixture as part of the heart of
the Dodger family for eighteen years, and it hasn't been
always a great eighteen years. Remember, they hadn't won a
World Serious in s eighty eight, and a lot of
folks didn't want to give him credit for twenty twenty.
So he helped. He was there when the team struggled,
(02:37:13):
he was there when the team had success, and so
in addition to being a great Dodger, a great pitcher,
a great professional, he became a guy who transcended the
game and a revered individual in the city Los Angeles
that loves its sports legends. Never forget when the Dodgers
were down on the dumps. The team started to have
(02:37:36):
success in the twenty tens, couldn't quite get over the hump,
But Clayton Kershaw was very much in the center of
all that. He was the backbone of all that. The
Dodgers had been knocking on the door for a long time.
They were a perennial contender, but they couldn't quite get
over the hump until they did again, Until they did again.
(02:37:57):
Twenty twenty World Serious Championship, twenty twenty four Worlds Championship,
three second Awards, An MVP over three thousand strikeouts, intensely competitive, dedicated,
great teammate, iconic presence, fan favorite, the emotional connection. Now,
what's the second thing that Kershaw has done? Of such
(02:38:17):
great notoriety? Clayton Kershaw is the only pitcher in Major
League Baseball since nineteen hundred to have accumulated over two
hundred wins of having less than one hundred losses. Clayton
Kershaw's career record two hundred and twenty two wins ninety
(02:38:38):
six losses. Add that to the nineteen other Hall of
famers who had at least one sub five hundred season.
Kershaw never had one two hundred wins less than one
hundred losses. The person to come close to that a
guy by the name of Pedro Martinez two hundred and
nineteen wins and one hundred losses. So there you have it.
How will Clayton Kershaw be remembered? That's how I think
(02:38:59):
he should be remembered. It's gonna do it for the
Bernie Frownisher. We'll see you next week. Keep it locked
up next to great Andy Furman. Fox Sports Radio
