Speaker 1 (00:01):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well that's right, you heard the man. It is that
time of week. My name is Bernie Froddle. We are
coming to live from the Fox Sports Radio studios here
in Las Vegas. We'll take you up to three am Pacific,
six am Eastern. We have got an absolute jam pack
show for you tonight. How about that thunder? I thought
the uh? I thought the Pacers were supposed to be
(00:25):
the comeback kids. We'll talk about that. Mark Ndina coming
up in about twenty minutes. Aaron Rodgers was in mini camp.
But let's take a look at the big picture. What
should this dealers really expect this year? We got another
fantastic ben That hour was callers and make it fantastic.
But I got three topics you'll get a kick out
of one serious, one a little whimsical. And I think
(00:47):
you're gonna have a hell of a lot of fun
with that brand new editions of brand New fool and
what my Name? And we're even gonna talk a little
Shoho Tani. I think he's gonna come back to the
Dodgers rotation, and sooner than you think. I will tighten
that up later in the show. But we begin with
an axiom that I've said if I had a nickel
(01:08):
every time I said it, I'd have my own private
playing with twenty four hour access, you see, because you
know how I feel, sports are the greatest reality show invented.
And you can script everything about the ending and Friday
which yet another example of that. And just when you
think you've seen it all, you see something new, because,
(01:31):
let's face it, the OKC Thunder flipped the script. Let's
break it down now. Just six minutes into Game four,
the NBA Finals game Friday night, Oka see trailed by nine,
and this vaunted defense that we'd seen all year, which
was legitimate, had already surrendered twenty four points in the
(01:51):
first six minutes. Okay, that tracks to one hundred and
ninety two. If they had kept that up. Well, obviously
that didn't happen. The Thunder. They'd gone back to their
double twin towers starting lineup with you know, chet holm
Grim and Isaiah Hartenstein on the floor, and the Pacers,
who'd had some issues with that earlier in the series,
(02:13):
well they had no trouble with it. They ran circles
around them. Then things didn't get much better when chet
Holmgren went to the bench, the Pacers they were doing
what they do. They play with pace, they play quick,
they play confident, they play with swagger. They are crisp,
and they looked unstoppable. Oh it didn't hurt that they
(02:36):
couldn't miss from behind. The ark got off the bus
started banging threes. Meanwhile, Okase couldn't buy a three, and
all of a sudden, shay Gilgess it felt like he
couldn't get his standard signature fingerprint on the game like
he usually is able to do. And oh yeah, Gamebridge
Fieldhouse was going bananas. So all of a sudden, you'd
(02:58):
be untrue if in the back of your mind, if
you're an Okase fan, doubt really didn't start to creep in,
And all of a sudden you're holding mental pictures of
what you don't want to happen. That's called fear. The
prospect of going down three to one. The Thunder they
were getting a stiff test. Were they really a championship team?
Do they really have the heart of a champion? See
(03:19):
now they're on the biggest stage, But you didn't win
sixty eight games by just being mere front runners. And yeah,
there you've spen questioning the relative inexperience hasn't been seen
as their greatest strength. So yes, they were exceptionally talented.
The question is could they be resilient. Someone always has
to step up, and this time it was Jalen Williams.
(03:43):
He powerstepped to a basket for free throws and a
one hand scoop. All of a sudden, there was life
for the thunder. And even this this happened after shake.
Gilder just went to the bench. They usually never rest
him this early the seven minute mark, and all of
a sudden, coach dagnall, maybe it's his turn to make
(04:04):
some tweaks. You've heard me singing the praises of Rick Carlile,
who I think is in the midst of a twenty
year circle of life story that is won for the
Ages if they win this thing. I've already told my
buddy Jeremy shapp about this. I covered you know, the Pistons.
Carlile coached him, and then four oh five was supposed
to be the year the Indiana patients wanted all the
(04:25):
mounts at the palace. Screwed that up. Twenty years later,
twenty four to twenty five, he's two games from doing it,
so all of a sudden, Jim is. The first quarter,
what looked like could have been a blowout, could have
been was at one point lead. Ladies and gentlemen, take
your seats. What happened in the next three rounds the
next three quarters was a heavyweight bout, body blow after
(04:47):
body blow. The Thunder finally took the lead in the
second quarter and actually built a six point cushion midway
through the second quarter, but once again, Rick Carlile dialed
up another adjustment. He brought pressure, and Indiana got the
advantage back right before the break, and they held the
Thunder to just six points over the final five and
a half minutes. The Pacers had that lead and it
(05:09):
looked like they would not relinquish it, and then all
of a sudden, they got it to ten points with
under a minute remaining in the third and the scoreboard
made it look if you just looked at the scoreboard,
it looked like, how does this not go three up?
Three to one? And if you looked at the body
language of the OKC Thunder, they looked a little wiped out,
a little overwhelmed, They looked fatigued. Yes, they did. They
(05:31):
kept cycling through different lineup combinations, rotations, They tried multiple
defensive looks. They were searching for answers and could not
find them. Indiana's pace, their full court pickups were absolutely
getting into the Thunder. The Thunder looked like they were
running in circles. Their offense was stagnant. I could give
a bunch of statistics on the radio, heard a boy
(05:53):
to death, but the truth of the matter is it
wasn't working. Jay Gil just constantly targeted at the other
end in ball screen action, off ball cuts or crashes.
Had his worst defensive game in the playoffs. The Thunder.
The Thunder were on fumes. They struggled to keep the
ball in front of him and blah blah blah. You
(06:14):
get it. It just kept it just didn't get better
until it did all of a sudden. Jalen Williams started
driving to the hoop and making shots that kept the
game from getting completely out of hand. Alex Caruso put
it like his hair was on fire and it was
raining gasoline that kept OKC within what do you want
(06:35):
to call it? Striking distance? And remember the Lakers used
to have Crusoe. Just go back and watch that fourth
quarter and ISO on Alex Caruso, he looked like three
men on the court. He was plugging all the gaps.
He's blowing up actions on defense, he was battling to
get rebounds, contesting everything, nailing jumpers on offense, played both
(07:00):
into the floor like a Charles Barkley used to back
in the day. And he was the one thunder player
with championship experience, and he was the least rattle player
throughout the game. His steady hand stopped the bleeding and
prevented the ship from completely sinking. His twenty points on
seven to nine and five steals in a block turned
(07:20):
out to be huge. Meanwhile, Chet Holmgren, he stepped up
after it look like he rolled his ankle in the
first quarter. He was also very instrument check that instrumental
on both ends of the floor. And all of this
finally set the stage for Shay Gilgess, who I believe
is the real deal. They set up the stage for
(07:41):
his potential heroics. This is where hearers are made. In
the NBA Finals, he scored fifteen points in the final
four minutes and the next thing you know, it was
okay see leaving town with a seven point victory one
eleven four, and now the series is tied it two.
And it turns out all the strategies and tactics in
(08:03):
case he used in order to preserve Schaeffer later in
the game from earlier rest to the reduced creation load
paid off in crunch time. Plus there was another you
know wrinkle that Mark Dagnault mate. With just under four
minutes remaining, he called time out Mark Dagnault and made
an adjustment. They probably won Game four. Andrew Nemhard had
(08:26):
been guarding the SGA pretty well. The Thunder used the
same action three times to get Nesmitt to switch, and
Shay kept scoring and getting a foul call three times
in a row. Now, maybe Indiana was a little over
Zubernan on defense and uh Benedict Mathern, who was the
(08:46):
hero in Game three, committed a couple of reckless files
and then all of a sudden, the Pacers couldn't make threes.
They missed eight of their three point attempts in the
fourth quarter, and I don't know what what happened. They
stopped going to Pascal Siaka and I know the hometown
Faithful is going to complain about Scott Foster and the
old conspiracy theory in the Indiana. You know, blah blah blah,
(09:08):
you get it, but however you slice it. When I
look at OKC, this was an incredible show of grit,
physical fortitude, mental toughness, mental stamina. And now they become
the first team in fifteen years to win a finals
game with fewer than four made three pointers. In other words,
Nolan Ryan once said, the mark of a champion is
(09:29):
when you beat a team you don't have your best stuff. Okay,
see do not have their best stuff. And they came
out with an incredible road victory. It wasn't pretty, it
was ugly, it was gritty, but it proved that the thunder.
This is the question we had about them. You put
them in a phone booth and get him in a fistfight.
Can they take a punch? We know they dole them out.
(09:49):
They said they could, and they did huge credit to
a team that validated I think a sixty eight win
season and pulled out Yes, third time, I'm going to
say it win now tow two, we've really got a series.
Each team has now stolen a game that no one
thought they would win. As the game went on to two,
(10:14):
there hasn't been a hell of a lot to separate
these two teams. What are I think is gonna happen next?
As I said in the beginning, expect the unexpected because
sports are the greatest reality show and you can script
everything but the inning. Yes, I'm very much looking forward
to Monday night. Be sure to check out the Fox

(10:58):

stephen A. Smith. I don't know that story kind of
bores me. I'm Bernie Frauder. We are County Line from

All right back in the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio.
Just getting started will take you up to three am Pacific,
six am Eastern. It's Tim Mint, Swalkman and Gentleman. There's
always a ton of news going on in the NBA.
He is, in fact, are Fox Sports Radio NBA Guru.
Three simple words, just that time, Mark Medina Medina Magic
(11:55):
comes to us every Saturday night here on the Bernie
Frattle Show. We market's two two in the NBA. We're
going to get to that in just a minute. But
I don't want to dwell on the next situation. And
I think they've gone through the phone book and alphabetical
order dropt the disease. It probably go ZILLMOBETI next, but
is did Jason get then completely dead? Or could a
trade be worked out?
Speaker 4 (12:16):
Wait?
Speaker 5 (12:16):
Oh, Bernie, can you hear me?
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I can hear you out ahead?
Speaker 5 (12:19):
Yeah, sorry about that. I was saying, I think it's
completely dead. We had discussed this at the beginning. When
you know there's talks about Jason could be an impossible kid.
I didn't see it happening. The reason is the Mavericks
would have to give permission. I don't think they're in
that mindset yet, because that just gives a message that
they might just be hitting the rebuild button and blowing
everything up besides the Cooper flag, and I think they're
(12:41):
in the mode of draft Cooper flag. Try to build
it around Kyrie Irving whenever he's back, and Anthony Davis
and have Jason could guide everything. So yeah, you hit
on the head of the New York nexts that looked
like they were just going through the phone book, the
phone book an alphabetic order and hoping that some team
might mistakenly give a permission to talk to their valued coach.
(13:03):
But so far, no good, just ever.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
So quickly because I don't want to dwell on it.
But since it was reported accurately that there was genuine
mutual interest, all right, how does Jason Kidd go back
into lockerm and say I might have gone, but I'm
here now. And by the way, I like their roster.
I told you i'd give it three years before the
Luca trade before I make my final decision. But how
do you go back to that roster mark and that
(13:28):
ownership team when they knew openly that you had real
interest in at least talking to the Knicks.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
Yeah, I think they can get over it because I
think Jason can say that he really wasn't interested. I mean,
I mean, I think if he pounded on the door
and told the Mavericks he wants out, they may have
given permission. But I think the fact that they didn't
give permission was a sign that, you know, maybe Jason
Kidd has some reservations, but not completely enough to want
to divorce everything. So I think it's an easy sell.
(13:56):
It would have been a much different scenario if this happened.
MAVs give the next suppression to talk to Jason Kidd.
He gets through a few round of interviews and he
doesn't get the job, and then he has to come
back to the Mavericks' locker room. But that's not what
the dynamic is. So the Mavericks have a lot of
issues on the table, most notably with injuries, but I
(14:18):
don't think the issues at all are going to be
centered around Jason Kidd and how he went back to
the locker room.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Sair enough just to put a cap around this. I
think if he talks to the next he would have
gotten the job. I don't think the Knicks would have
talked to him just to put him off. But we'll
never know. Well, we may still know. We'll see Russell
Westbrook declines just three and a half million dollar option
with the Nuggets. How much of a market is there
for him? What do you think he ends up?
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Yeah, I frankly don't think there's a market for him.
I mean, we've seen ever since his time with the Lakers,
and it's kind of part you tie together that he's
a mercenary now. He is not the all star caliber
player that was beloved by the Oklahoma City Thunder franchise.
He's a shell of himself and he shows says of
what made him great, and teams have been willing to
(15:03):
take a flyer on him because he's relatively less expensive
and he's very competitive. But a lot of times the
law diminishing returns happens where you know the weaknesses in
this game defense, shot selection, shooting, accuracy, ball handling that
becomes too much of a liability and the competitive spirit
(15:24):
motor isn't worth it. So with that, there will certainly
be a team that takes a flyer on him, only
because his market value isn't going to be as high.
But it's going to be one of those things that
he's going to have to very much wait and see
and wait for all the major dominoes to fall. What
happened with Kevin Durant with any trade, same thing with
(15:45):
Gianni Sntetcumpo. And then some of the more you know,
top tier free agents. Where do they end up? And
then you know, maybe by the middle of summerly he'll
latch onto a team. But if he does join a team,
it's going to be a luxury now the necessity, and
it might it will be the same thing as they
faced with the Clippers Nuggets. Get ready for a reduced
(16:07):
role and be willing to accept that, and so far
he says he accepts it, but then when it comes
playoff time, he doesn't. So yeah, it's kind of been
the same scenario over and over again these past few years.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Another guy who appears that he is inevitably on the move.
It looks like the Kevin Durant in game in Phoenix
is about to come to Fruition and he's actually picking
three teams he wants to go. What are the chance
he ends up with the Heats, Burs or Rockets.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Yeah, well, Bernie, we've been talking about the Heat the
last two weeks, and I think that that is the
most likely scenario. He might be interested in the Houston
Rockets and the San Antonios Bergson, I don't think it's
realistic that either teams are going to acquire Kevin Durant.
And here's why. They love Kevin Durant as a player.
They love him as a person, they love his efficiency.
(16:56):
They just don't think that it's worth it because of
a his recent injury history ever since he tours Achilles
in twenty nine tm B. The amount of assets in
terms of roster death and draft picks you'd have to
give up to get Kevin Durant. And the Spurs and
the Rockets, they're both young teams on the rise that yeah,
they need to make roster upgrades, but not enough to
(17:19):
blow up their depth to get an aging superstar. Miami,
on the other hand, they're more vulnerable. They went through
the first round sueper against Cleveland. They saw how losing
Jimmy Butler really hurt them. So they're not in the
same tier as Houston and San Antonio's right now. And
I think with that, they're going to be more willing
(17:39):
to part with assets. Partly, this plays their advantage because
again I think San Antonio and Houston aren't going to
be willing to partake in these discussions. I want to
be surprised me if they patch up Andrew Wiggins, Duncan Robinson,
Jimi Hawkins Junior, and a few first round picks, and
that's the best offer that the Suns get for Kevin Durant.
But if it's not, you know, maybe the heat budge
(18:02):
a little that they consider moving Tyler Hero. They love
Tyler Hero, but I think again it's the last year,
last season's lessons that this team is very competitive, Tyler Hero,
great player, great young talent, bam Adebayo, very underrated defender,
versatile player, team player all round. But it's not enough
(18:24):
for them to be a serious playoff team. And so
I think with that they're going to conclude, you know what,
we have to do a little give and take here
so we can get Kevin Durant. Doesn't make them a contender,
the least get it gives them a better shot at
being a dangerous playoff team.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's always a baffling to me that.
I mean, durant One was with go On State, of course,
but they'd won before he got there, that he couldn't
replicate that at some point in the last eight nine years,
another guy who's talked about being on the move or
talked about him being on the move. And then we
(19:02):
got the tweet from Buck Cheddar last week said Gianness
isn't going anywhere. Well, Brian Winhorse may have added some
credence to that. Apparently the narrative now seems to be
that Gianness is not going to ask for a trade.
At least for now, he's staying put on the Bucks
and if in fact there's a trade, there is a trade,
probably wouldn't be till after the season starts. I'ntacked that.
(19:24):
What do you take it?
Speaker 5 (19:25):
It's very fluid. I mean, Brian, he is plugged in
as any NBA report can be. And yeah, that's that's
what the Bucks and Giannis are saying if they don't
want to trade, and you understand it, Giannest Hanscompo is
still an MVP to kind of taller player, superstar player.
He means a lot to their business in terms of
(19:46):
ticket sales and merchandising. Overall attention, especially for a small
market team. But I think at some point, whether it's
Giannis subtlely saying I'll listen to offers, or the Bucks
making the tough decision that they just need to part
ways because of the three consecutive first round exits and
the concerns about Damian Loward next season with his return
(20:06):
from an achilles injuries. So I know what they're saying.
It's all legit, but I think deadlines have a way
of crystallizing things where teams will still make some offers
lean in a draft night, they'll still make some offers
once free agency starts. And so I know that's what
the Bucks are saying now. But it's easy for them
(20:26):
to say that now because they don't have to make
decisions and they're not working on a deadline. But let's
let's see how it plays out draft night, and if
it doesn't play out draft night in free agency, all
I'm saying is I'll be very surprised if he actually
plays for the Bucks next season.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Fair, Fair, do you think he starts this season with
the Bucks?
Speaker 5 (20:45):
Though very well could, I would be surprised. But if
he does start with the Bucks next season, it's just
about the bridge toward the inevitable that they deal them
before the trade deadline. I think all this happens before
the off season, so there's a queen slate. They can
have a full training camp, they don't deal with the
in season drama intrigue about it. But you have to
(21:07):
find the right deal too, So they're not going to
just trade them for the sake of it. They have
to get something in return for value that both satisfies
short term long term needs. Never is going to be
equal when it comes to a superstar trade, but at
least has to be respectable. So never say never. But
my hunt again is that the more likely scenario is
(21:28):
he gets dealt Draft night or the beginning of free agency.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Talking with Mark medeena Madina Magic every Saturday night here
on the Bernie Fradleshaw or Fox Sports Radio NBA Guru. Okay,
Steven Adams got himself a message of Tayday. He's got
thirty nine million reasons to be happy. The reason I
want to talk about this, I think it's significant is
because you can scratch him off the list of a
potential center the Lakers might have targeted. But it also
(21:52):
speaks to him. You know, the amount he got paid
is at a bit of a wake up go off
for the Lakers if you make a run of the
Clint Capella or Brook Lopez or I don't know, there's
some other names I'll mentioned on a second. What are
the Lakers going to do? Who's their first choice? If
they could, we have a magic wand.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
Yeah, well, if their first choice, it would be a
Superstar Center. They just don't have that kind of cap
space and luxury. I think with Steven Adams it makes sense.
He's on a young team that's on the up and up,
and so he's fine stained put keep your eye on
players like Nick Claxton from brook One, Clint Capella from Atlanta,
(22:32):
maybe Brook Lopez from Milwaukee. I think with Brook Lopez
with Milwaukee, that's a more likely departure because of the
fact that the Bucks are trying to manage the cap
and they're trying to manage spending to still retain everything
without trading the honest. But Clint Capella, he would be
(22:54):
likely to leave Atlanta because of their underachieving season last year.
Same thing with Brooklyn. With Nick Claxon, they've you know,
were tanking last year, so I would look at those
three options here, but again that's not guaranteed, partly because
of what you just said. They don't have a lot
of cap space to work with, and it's likely going
(23:16):
to have to result and then making a trade, whether
it's including Austin Reeves in the centerpiece as a centerpiece,
if not patching together Rui Atchama Dori and Finney Smith
cape Vincent. But I want to be surprised if at
least one of those three players are on the Lakers
team next year. Doesn't solve everything, but at least gives
them some center depth. And you know what, that's asking
(23:38):
a lot because they had no center depth last playoffs.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
All Right, I'm gonna come off the tap roup and
throw a name. How about Walter Kessler in Utah. I
know they're I know they're not opening openly shopping them,
but he's the kind of room protector and rebounder that
could really help them.
Speaker 5 (23:55):
Oh, no doubt, great fit. The Lakers love Walker Kessler.
I just don't think that Danny and just gonna to
make him available. He would be wanting to sell the
farm because that's how the NYGE operates, and the Lakers,
for all their roster needs, priority number one being the
center spot. They also want to protect their roster depth.
It could be a lot better, but also could be
a lot worse. They don't want to go down the
(24:16):
route where the roster depth is just all veteran, minimum
type guys. So I don't think Walker Cussler's going anywhere,
especially not the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Well, can the Lakers afford Clint Capella? You signed a
forty five million dollars deal. I think they're going to
have I think they're going to really run into a
brick wall here. And I was there one more name
I want to mention coming in a left field Jalen
Durant from the Pistons. What are your thoughts on him? Possibly?
Speaker 5 (24:42):
Yeah, I don't think he really moves the needle much.
But to your point about Clay Capella, Yeah, that's what
I'm saying. They're going to have to package a trade
here now. It is in the devil in the details.
I think Austin Reeves is a great player. He's not untouchable,
but he's young talent. I think he co exists really
well with Luka Doncic, and there's something to be said
(25:03):
for a player that just continues to get better and better,
and so it has to be a thing where this
is going to put them over the top. So with
Clint Capella, they're going to have to max salary, and
that's the challenging part because Austin Reeves doesn't make that
kind of money, but also has to be a move
where it's clear, Okay, this puts them into not necessarily
(25:25):
championship contending favorite. But now they're part of the conversation.
And it's not just oh, Lebron James is back and
Luka Dodgrige's back. It's that they have some other good
pieces that can really help them defensively as well as
give Luka Doncicch that big lob threat that he's used
to playing with during his career.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
So here's why I mentioned Galen Duran. It's Jerry westbro
alive and I could call him, I would, and he was.
He made four million last year. He played seventy eight
games and averaged a double double, including almost eleven rebounds
a game. He's only twenty one years old. I'm just
saying now, there is one other scenario that I think
could happen, maybe as soon as tomorrow. What if the
Lakers traded Bronni for Nicole Jokic.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
You know what, don't be surprised when that happens. If
he does that does happen, Ron Polinka is guaranteed a
win Executive of the Year.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Well, there's yeah, there's no way the Lakers take that
to you. I mean, Bronni's got the whole world in
front of him.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
Yeah, you're right, I mean there's more Out and brown
were Nicole Jokers. He's kind of peeking right now. Yeah,
they probably should.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Well, you got to remember too, let's fast forward to
your twenty thirty four when Lebron I don't know if
I want to retire this year, you know, ten years
from now, that was his farewell tour and have Bryce
and Brownie in the back court. And who doesn't want
to see that?
Speaker 5 (26:43):
Yeah? And I mean we also have to keep in
mind that it's not just about Broun and Lebron playing,
it's Lebron, Braun and Bryce playing.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
That's a point, That's what I'm saying. Yeah, Brin Brice
would be a ten year veteran.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
Yeah, yeah, I mean when you think of the big
all time big trios in the NBA, you know, watch
out because they're gonna make some noise.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Yeah, I got to sit down my hipseit go soak
my head all right before real quickly before we get
to the finals. Look, I don't know. We are in
a society where people love to play gotcha, and we
elevate people to their highest plateau whatever it is in life, sports, politics,
only to tear them down. So people couldn't wait to
(27:31):
kick Steven A. Smith in the nuts. Were playing Solitaire
last night while the NBA game was going on. Do
you have any comment on this because I had to
hold my nose to bring this up.
Speaker 5 (27:43):
Yeah, I mean everyone's entitled to handle their working responsibilities
out of game. I just don't think it's.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Good to do that.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
I mean, of course, not such at all, Like this
is your job to watch the games, very paid, handsomely.
I think fans have every right to feel upset that
someone who has that kind of platform is, you know,
looking at the phone and playing a card game.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Wiles are going on. It's a terrible look. But the
unfortunate reality is, and you've been around the media long
enough to know he ain't the only one that does
this kind of stuff. That is true that it's very
bothersome to me that you're out in the air for
a short amount of time, but you can't lock down,
you know, I I you know you're dead to me.
But look, stephen A is teflone man right now. And
(28:33):
I like steven A and no one likes the name dropper,
but had dinner with steven A back in two thousand
and five with Fishbones and Detroit with Rob Parker, so
he's a good dude.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Look, And I know you know that.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
So I had to bring it up because everybody else
is right, I can't be read. Yeah, all right, let's
let's go ahead.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
I was gonna say, it doesn't make it acceptable when
you're at the game. Yeah, it doesn't mean you have
to be charting players like a scout, but you're you're
there to work, so you're either watching the game or
you're talking to people involved with game. You executive scouts,
et cetera. You can't be, you know, doing something that
you do in your downtime. You know you're there to work.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Well, I think the worst look is playing solitaire. If
he's going to be distracted. Who that wants to play solitaire?
I don't played solitaire in my damn life.
Speaker 5 (29:16):
If you know what I mean. There could have been
a lot worse thing.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
No, yeah, that's it. We'll leave it there, my friend,
We'll leave it there. Luca with the noises in the
background at the Mavericks of years ago. All right. Bottom line,
we got a hell of a series. I really am
loving this series to death. We're down to a best
of three. I can't change my pick. I right with Indiana.
Does the new start to tighten on this ilksee teams
(29:40):
they try to close out the series or you know
you're gonna stick to your guns.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
Well, I think anything can go. This series has been
very competitive, but I think that had the Thunder not
one Game four, the Pacers would have won the series.
It's much different having a three to one series lead
than it being tied two to two. I think I
I thought, I've thought all along the Thunder are going
to win this series, even after the lost Game one,
(30:05):
even after the lost Game three, because it's been competitive
on paper to the Thunder are the better team. I
think they've learned throughout the series that they have to
raise their game to another level. Not only is about
shake goes Alexander, and he was a huge part in
their game four win. But it's also about their supporting cast,
their top ranked defense with their wings for the simple
(30:27):
reason that the Indiana Pacers have shown that they have
to tap into everything. Tyres Halberton raised in his game
to another level, being more consistent not just as a
playmaker but score, but having a reliable set of supporting
cast members from Pascal Siakam to Andrew Nempart to TJ
McConnell on down. So this is a game that's going
(30:47):
to go back and forth. It's anyone serious. But if
I had to take a guess, it will be the
Thunder because now they have home court advantage and on
paper they had the better team. Shake godess, Alexander's the MVP,
he's a better score, he's a little bit older than
Tyris Alburton, and they just have the top rank defense
that knows how to how to force a lot of turnovers.
(31:08):
So tune in, though it's gonna be a fun one.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I'm sorry, Mark, what was those last three minutes? I
was playing Solitaire?
Speaker 6 (31:16):
Mark?
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Great stuff is always my man. Can't wait till next Saturday.
I'm sure there's gonna be a lot more and uh,
you know, after Monday, we've got Thursday, and I do
think we will be looking at a game seven to
talk about next Saturday nights. Mark, we'll talk to you then.
I appreciate you, Mark Medina, Medina Magic, Fox Sports Radio,
NBA guru. You hear him on my show, Beronnie Faders
(31:38):
Show every Saturday night. Coming up, I have three tremendous
topics for the midnight hour twenty minutes from now. It's
midnight literally in Las Vegas. From where I say, perhaps
you as well, but figuraively it's a midnight hour. Its
means you got the last word. You can start doing
your finger exercises at eight seven seven nine nine six
six three sixty nine seven nine to nine on Fox.
(32:01):
Will break down those topics. Coming up. I'm Bernie fraddlework
comedy line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tireck
dot Com Studios. Yes, I did it again. You listened
to Bernie Fradle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
back in the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports Radio. We
are thirteen minutes away from the midnight hour eight seven
seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine, eight seven
(32:21):
seven nine to nine on Fox. Dall us up, looking
forward to hearing from you. It will be twelve midnight
literally here in thirteen minutes from where I sit in
Las Vegas. But we've got people listening from around the world,
including my good buddy Joe Gibbs in Australia, So it's
midnight hour figuratively we are at all right. I'm gonna
lay out three topics. I'm betting you're gonna love the
(32:43):
second one the most, but the first one is all right.
The House versus NCAA settlement is in the books now.
It's massive for the future of college sports. Starting on
July first, schools will be able to share a little
over twenty million with its student athletes. And look, the
football players will get the most, and the men's basketball
blah blah blah. You know about all that. But Paul Finebaum,
(33:06):
a highly respected, you know, media mogul in the South,
believes that quote college sports says, we know it are
not over come on, man. Really, I know things aren't
going to be the same. But there's been an evolution
of college sports going for one hundred years. And I understand,
you know, you try to balance tradition with modernization. But
(33:27):
he hates this and he in his opinion matters. It's
a billion dollar industry, but it's going to be very
uneven in the future, he feels. And in college football
as we know, it is over. Okay, I want to
hear your thoughts. You tell me you're not going to
watch it? Or when the you watch a terrific seventy
five yard run or arch Manning, you know, complete a
(33:50):
pass for sixty years ago? What that was beautiful? But man,
the game's over because these kids are getting paid, they've
been getting paid now they're just getting guardrails around it.
So I want to hear your thoughts. How do you
feel about the house versus the NCAA settlement and moreover,
Paul Finebaund's comments, well you still watch? Does it affect
the way you watch? Does it bother you? All Right?
(34:10):
This number two topic is abute. I can't wait to
hear what you've got to say. I'm not going to
make a big deal out of the fact that NBA
w NBA ratings were down fifty five percent across the
board the two weeks Caitlyn Clark was out. She returned
just in time to knock off the Indian at Liberty.
You saw what happened on Saturday, and maybe it did.
At least you heard about it a big deal. The
(34:31):
ratings are down what you expect, and maybe they'll go
back up now the Caitlin's here, But that's not why
I am posing this to be a midnight hour topic.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Now.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
I've been pretty fair to the WNBA, saying I think
the product's decent. Okay, they play a good brand of
basketball below the rim, but there's there's passing, there's shooting,
there's playmaking, there's boxing out, there's you know, switching on defense,
there's real it's competitive. I'm just bored by it. It's
what I call the Canadian Football League cindrome. They don't
(35:04):
really know who's playing. You don't know what the rivalries are.
And that's what America needs and wants. Gotta be identity.
So two years ago, when the Las Vegas Ainates has
won the championship, here Clay Travis, who's a pretty successful guy.
You might not like him, that's a you problem, and
you don't have to like him, but there are objective
truths and there are personal feelings. The dude's successful and
(35:26):
he's got an audience. He really diminished the WNBA by
saying he didn't think the Aces could beat a high
school state champion team, and I think he tweeted it
out and one of the Aces is not going to
mention her name said she called him a dumbass. Well,
how about play the game. Come on, I'm not being
funny here. Let's do it in all the many do
(35:49):
whatever your favorite charity is. You tell me you wouldn't
watch that, and who would win? I'll tell you later
who I think would win. And I don't think it
would be particularly close. But I want to hear what
the callers think. Seven seven nine, nine sixty six, three
sixty nine would the WNBA chance be it a high
school state championship team? Yes? Or no? Would you watch that?
Is it a stupid thing to even mention? And somehow
(36:12):
I have to try to pose this in a in
a context to where we're not putting anybody down here.
It's just a talking point. Okay, they either would or
they wouldn't, and so I will see what the opinions are.
So I'm dying to hear that. The third thing is
(36:32):
I can't not not talk about Shador Sanders when you've
got your reputable people on our network saying they think
he should start. What are you talking about? Okay, now, look,
I don't dislike Shador Sanders. I like him actually, and
he looks like a happy, lucky kid, so happy to
be in the NFL. I think it's awesome. You know
what the great story would be, Dick shaff took me
to roof of the story. What if he becomes a
starter and they went to the playoffs?
Speaker 6 (36:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (36:54):
What if for the next two years Shador Sanders was
seven and five and win a playoff game? Tell me
if you think that would be good. It's a trick question,
and I'm gonna pay off the t's when at the
end of the men that hour. So what if you
went seven and five and won a playoff games? You door?
But what the hell are you going to evaluate? In
shorts and helmets? Maybe throwing mechanics, arm strength. The problem
(37:17):
is when you put a kid in shorts and helmets,
you don't really learn. As much as Colin carrd wants
you to believe, there's no game simulation. It's a completely
controlled environment of drills. There's no way you're even coming
close to replicating any kind of chaos and pressure of
a real game where a quarterback has two seconds to
make a decision under the rest against the live defense,
(37:38):
with trained killers coming after and with bad intentions. There's
no way a shorts and helmet's drill accounts for pocket presence.
Can you navigate the pocket? Can you sense pressure? Can
you extend plays? You're not gonna find that out. You're
not gonna find out about football IQ. Someone's reported, and
I don't know if it's true. So coolier jets don't
listen selectively that Chador did not do well in one
(38:00):
whiteboard exercises. I don't know if he did or he didn't.
I wouldn't there, But I do know this, having covered
the NFL for all long time and the Lions from
ten years up close and personal, A shorts and helmets
drill does not allow you to make pre snapp adjustments,
call audibles, redefenses. And finally, it doesn't really show medical
or physical toughness, which Schador did show a lot of.
(38:20):
I thought at Colorado. Okay, so I get it that
shorts and helmet's drills they provide some information for evaluating
quarterback prospects, but I keep you know, Colin kept showing
that same highlight, the same one three times over with
the guy runs a straight fly and he's covered in
Dean chanders or shade or hits him. Any five star,
three star high school quarterback would have made that damn throw.
(38:43):
So are you buying the Shador Sanders hype just because
of shorts and helmets? There's one hundred and twenty quarterbacks
in mini camp this week we keep talking about the
same one. Okay? Cool? So those are our midnight hour topics?
Is college football over as we know it? According to
Faull fine Bomb thanks to House versus NCAA, will you watch,
I will, I'll kick? I'm stealing one from him three
(39:06):
years ago, would the NWNBA champion be a high school
state champion team? And the third one, are you buying
the Shador Sanders height? I just gave you my my
long term experience breakdown and what a shortz and helmets
drill really is? So those are your three topics? Shadeur
WNBA versus high School team and House versus nca eight
(39:29):
seven seven nine to nine on Fox eight seven seven
nine nine six six three sixty nine. It is the
Midnight Hour and the Bernie Fraddle Show. Let's hear from you,
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
Do're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
That's right, you heard the man. It is that time
of week. As we continue on with the Bernie Fraddle Show.
We continue rolling right along from the Fox Sports Radio
studios here in Vegas. Take after three m Pacific, six
am Eastern. We have three excellent topics on the midnight
hour tonight, House versus NCAA with the nw NBA champs,
(40:02):
be the high school state champion team and the Shedor Sanders.
Happy you're buying it now? Before I get to my sounder,
I apologize these things happening radio. We'll do the best
we can. We only have one phone line working tonight,
and Jim will get to you in just a second,
So if you dial in and get a busy signal,
(40:22):
we're gonna do the best we can. I really do
want to hear from you. So we'll go through the
callers and as one drops, a line will open and
if you can can dial in, great. We it's the
callers who truly make the midnight hour go. So if
you'll just bear with us, I think we can limp
through this and still have a rock solid midnight hour.
(40:42):
So without further ado, it's the midnight hour again. After
we wrap with Jim, A line will open and we'll
do it the old fashioned way. I guess if that's whatever, Jim,
welcome in. But what do you got for us tonight?
Speaker 4 (40:54):
Hey, how's it going? Brilliant?
Speaker 6 (40:56):
Let's think about the NBA team playing the high school
championship team. I don't even look at stuff like that.
I don't even care about stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Why would you do that? I mean, it's a boys,
Clay Travis, it's two years old to your little topic
because the league is struggling to get at sea legs, Jim.
But good, go ahead.
Speaker 6 (41:18):
Yeah. But the thing is, I watched that game last
night and I got to tell you something, and I
heard her talk afterwards, Dak Caitlin Clark is the real deal.
She's got a mind for the game like Larry Bird
because and she's just like him too.
Speaker 7 (41:34):
You know.
Speaker 6 (41:35):
She keeps to herself, she's quiet. She does all her
talking on the floor, you know, by her play, not
with her mouth like them other people. And you know,
it's it's just a great thing that people should experience
because people like that only come along once in a lifetime,
you know, and they all stop there whining and crying
and just enjoy her while she's here and with that
(41:57):
going on there. But like the LEA, it's just I
watched the game.
Speaker 7 (42:01):
A lot of the people were.
Speaker 6 (42:01):
Missing open shots on both teams. It's just it's just
they're not like because you what do you measure against.
You measured against the game, the pro game, the guy's game,
and they don't miss most of the time. If they miss,
they're not playing. But in wa WNBA, they're all missing.
So you know that's the difference there.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
You know with them, do you think on house first,
the NCAA or the shoe door standards site.
Speaker 7 (42:27):
I should should do it.
Speaker 6 (42:28):
I think he'll be okay. I think you know, he's
a diamond or rough. We'll see what happens. I think
he's gonna make it. I don't know how good it
will be. I think he'll make it. But I got
to remember the Patriots had this kid that played quarterbacks
backing up bless all whoever. I forgot who he was
from Kim he.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
Was twenty he was I covered him in Michigan. He
was twenty and five as the starter. And if you're
going to compare him to shoot door, my man, don't
we don't we don't need to get that off the ground.
That's just a non starter.
Speaker 6 (42:57):
No, but no, I think his name is Michael Ship.
You played at Kansas State.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
Oh, I'll tell you a story. Really, Jim, I want
to do their callers. It's good on you bringing that up.
That's a great I'm sorry, my bad I went. I
thought we were gonna mention Brady anything real quickly at
the NCAA.
Speaker 6 (43:15):
Not with the NCAA, I mean whatever, but I mean
with the with the Bishop thing.
Speaker 4 (43:19):
He was so good.
Speaker 6 (43:20):
They thought he was next to Michael Vick.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
But he just couldn't read.
Speaker 6 (43:23):
He couldn't read a playbook, he couldn't read defenses. Even
when you showed film, he just couldn't get it. And
you know, that's the way it is with some guys.
It doesn't matter what the game you see.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
Yeah, what's the next level?
Speaker 6 (43:35):
You know, that's where you get that into the problems.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
That's right, buddy, all right, thanks Jim eight seven seven, nine,
nine six six three sixty nine. Who's ever up next?
Will take your car? Look forward to Jim brought up
a great name because Michael Bishop was a terrific option
quarterback at Kansas State back in what ninety eight, ninety nine,
and he got drafted by the New England Patriots. And
(43:58):
what's interesting is Tom Brady came and they had a
very crowded quarterback room and one of them was going
to get caught, and they had a I think seven
of the coaches voted, and six of the seven voted
to cut Brady, and he was overruled by the head
coach there at the time, Bill Belichick, who ended up
(44:18):
keeping obviously Tom Brady. That was the right decision, and uh,
you know, the rest is history. But great, good on you,
Jim Alan and Saint Louis joined just Allen, Welcome into
the Bernie Frattle Show.
Speaker 8 (44:31):
Hey, I got it early that night this morning, how
you doing, Bernie, Good buddy, and I want to say
hello to the lovely baby who always answered the phone.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
All right, we want to get to the quest, thank you,
but we want to get to the topics as quickly
as we're having a real phone issue.
Speaker 8 (44:45):
Ah see, Okay, first and fourth, the college is just heard,
you know every time that there's some kind of different
rule of something funny and people, what's going to ruin
college football? Nothing U in college football?
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Good point, good point.
Speaker 8 (45:02):
I'm going to continue to watch it. Let's face it,
the same teams are going to be good regardless of
what the rules are. You know, the SEC and the
big team are going to dominate. So people just have
they either accept it or they don't. And I think
once the season starts, it's gonna be a bunch of
stadiums and field up at the TV.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
That's a great call, Allen. Anything on door or the
w n b A.
Speaker 8 (45:27):
And you know this shador thing, you know, I think
anytime you can evaluate somebody wearing shorts and no defense
against them, I take it with the great assault. People
got to have something to talk about. So we'll see
whether he's good or not.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
You're on fire, Allen, You're on fire. Anything on on
the w n b A. If they you't played, it's.
Speaker 8 (45:52):
The biggest it's the biggest joke in the world. First
of all, who rules they do they play under? Do
you play the thirty two minute game high school girls?
Or do you play the forty games?
Speaker 2 (46:03):
I'm talking about high school boys playing. That's how Clay
Travis said. You can play whatever you want. You can
play the two twenty. You can make the rules whatever
you want. We don't need to split hairs.
Speaker 8 (46:12):
Let's face it, have you seen some of the way
big players now these played as a big Yeah?
Speaker 2 (46:18):
But yeah, but I but but that's fair and there's
more life than just size. Take the last word, Allen.
Speaker 8 (46:28):
I think, I think I think the w NBA players
would beat the high school team. But let's face it,
when these guys get tired, put this bench guys in
sot of later, and I think that's where they're gonna lose.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
All Right, Allen, who's a nailed all three subjects? Great call?
Look uh And we had a tweeter. A guy tweeted
Bill Kittle from l A S's a w A A
w NBA team would wax a state champion w NBA
picking rules of a battle they played defense from twenty
seven feet from the basket. Yeah, I'll save my opinion
(47:06):
for the end. We'll just leave it there. My man,
Jerome Jerome three point sixteen for Jerome so loved the
world He called Bernie Frattle Show, among others, shows so
that the world might be a better place. What do
they got for us tonight? Jerome?
Speaker 7 (47:22):
Hey, you keep your needle sharp, don't you? Anyway? Tell
our Craig travelers if he played one of those high
level WNBA women one on one, he'd get his ass kicked. Okay,
because dark woman on shape. Man, you ever seen someone
walking to the hallway. Hey, I wouldn't mess with damn boy.
(47:44):
I saw that Chelsey Plump she put together all right. They'
a nanny poun Weaklington. They look wait and run and
all that.
Speaker 9 (47:53):
He gets that's true going out.
Speaker 7 (47:55):
Okay, So he's trying to pick people. I want him
to play one I don't want. Let's see about that.
Put his put his body on the line. Don't put
somebody else on the line. Put his mouth and his
body on the line. We'll see what happens. Hey, she
dous Sanders. I'm not so sure, man, I got a
way to see about all of this, because hey, there's
(48:17):
a whole lot of hype out there in this world. Man.
But hey, they rubber mister Rhodes when they play the
Excavation season and it starts to be live Dan. So
we'll find out. We'll find out. What was that on
the topic you were talking.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
About, Well, Paul Feinbaum lost his mind. He said college
football is over as we know it.
Speaker 7 (48:36):
Oh you drunk. I can't wait to see Texas in Ohio. Skick,
what's he talking about?
Speaker 5 (48:44):
Man?
Speaker 7 (48:44):
Texans in the house and Jerry's well, oh, hey, can
we get the heisman yet? Hey in the Ohio state? Lord?
Never can? I can't wait. Stop drinking, Paul leave to
whot you on?
Speaker 2 (48:58):
Okay, thank you, Jerome, tell you the callers are great.
I hate that that we can only do one at
a time like this and it's burning everybody. But I
appreciate what we're doing. All right, great job, Let's go
to Jack, Texas. Jack is his name from Oklahoma. Welcome
(49:19):
in Jack.
Speaker 10 (49:21):
How you doing, Bernie?
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Do well? Thank you? You know the three topics in
all right.
Speaker 10 (49:26):
As far as the college football goes, if they play,
everyone will watch and he needs to shut up.
Speaker 6 (49:32):
And just watch football.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
And I'm a total gaming on that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (49:37):
As far as the.
Speaker 10 (49:39):
W NBA playing high school, listen, they're professionals. I think
they would win, honestly because I watched March Madness and
until you get to the elite eight, they miss a
lot of shots. They're not very fundamentally sound in college basketball.
So you extrapolate that down to high school. And it
(50:03):
depends on the state champion. You pick what state you pick.
Speaker 5 (50:06):
It, Bron.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
What if I since your well, your Texas Jack. What
if I told you the US women's national team back
when they were loaded with you know, Alex Morgan and
everybody eight years ago played the U fifteen Dallas Boys
travel team, and the Dallas fifteen year old boys beat
him five to two. I mean, anyway, I appreciate your opinion.
(50:31):
And we're three and oh, I mean everybody else thinks
they went okay? Anything on you already talked about if
she George Sanders, anything on George Anders?
Speaker 10 (50:39):
Jack, No, they just need to quit hopping it. It's
kinda won't come out in the wash. I mean, shorten
them and a helmet. You can't tell anything from that.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
That's what I see. I don't know if you heard
my commentary about twenty minutes ago, you spot out my friend.
Speaker 10 (50:56):
Hell, I'm pretty accurate with just a helmet on.
Speaker 2 (51:01):
Show up in Cleveland. I need a quarterback. Hey, thanks
a lot, Jack, don't be a stranger, buddy. And and
by the way, and keep keep the calls coming inbody's
doing great. I appreciate everybody the way they're handling this.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
By the way, Paul Feinbaum, he said something that I
think Alan and built your own maybe maybe have you
surped and that is he well, first of all, Paul
Finemum went on to say college athletics did to themselves.
They're not really suffering for it because it's a big
and dollar industry. But I think it's going to be
very uneven in the future. I think at some point
fans are going to start turning tuning out, what are
(51:33):
you talking about it? It's not in even now, it's
not even now the same I forgot which college said
it because we've had Alan Jerome and Texas Jack in
eight seven, seven ninety nine. O Fox, be patient with us.
You know, we're we're not we don't have we're not
full capacity, and but we're going to, uh, you know,
(51:54):
get through this. The longest short of it is we
we we all know that when the when the games
take place between the lines, it doesn't you know, you
don't stop and analyze how college players are going to
be paid. You know, college players have been paid under
the table and around the corner for sixty seventy years,
(52:17):
all right, I mean it's and now they're trying to
get their their mind around it. And now all of
a sudden starting in you know, this season, colleges will
be able to you know, do revenue sharing, and so
every school will have a salary cap as it were,
of about twenty million dollars and that will you know,
(52:39):
that represents about twenty two percent of the average athletic
department revenue across power conferences and and so what's happening
now is that the schools will pay the athletes directly.
That's basically what's happening now. You know who's going to
be eligible, Well, any NCAA schools that opted into the
House settlement, they're going to be allowed to participate, regardless
(53:02):
of what level of funding they have. You know, Sacramento State,
which was an FCS school hoping to transition to the FBS, well,
they intend to share revenue. So any school at any
level of the NCAA can technically opt in. But Paul Finbaum,
really we had some We've had some really good good callers.
(53:24):
I mean we've had some. This has really been good
tonight because the truth of the matter is they're kind
of you know, sorting the craft from the maneuver for
for for lack of a better thing. So we're going
to reset this Uh again, do you think that the
w n b A champs would be a high school
(53:45):
state champion teams? This is from the Klay Travis playbook
a few years ago. Uh your thoughts on the house
versus the NCAA and Shood or Sanders should or Sanders?
Are you buying the hype? I'll get into that and
more in just a minute. For the best pregame show weekend,

is next, Hey Hugh, how are you man?
Speaker 4 (55:23):
I'm all right. I was.
Speaker 11 (55:25):
I was like getting off work, turn on the radio
and out here in La so they had like the
postgame Dodgers talk show or whatever, and then all of
a sudden you came on late because they went overtime,
and I was like snapped out of my vortex that's
kind of missed. I haven't.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
I haven't. I don't think I've.
Speaker 11 (55:44):
Caught the last two weeks or something like that, just
doing my own thing.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
Good, were you able to catch your three topics I
set up you?
Speaker 4 (55:51):
Yeah, I heard them.
Speaker 2 (55:52):
Okay, start like, all.
Speaker 11 (55:57):
Right, so it's high school boys versus the women pros.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
Yeah, take like modern day. Say do you think modern
day would beat a the.
Speaker 11 (56:05):
W NBA champions Well, okay, so first of all, we're
talking about in high school, they probably if they're a
great you know, if they're a championship tall over high
school team, there's at least playing like at the rim,
maybe a little above them.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
All high school teams play out are above the rim. Okay,
even the ones that don't win championships.
Speaker 11 (56:26):
Women women don't play at the rim a lot or
even they play like four feet below the rim. So
athleticism alone would make a competitive regardless.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
I mean, I'll be very honest.
Speaker 11 (56:38):
You know, I played a lot of basketball, streetball and
everything not lately. But I feel like, I mean a
bunch of dudes can go and give it a competitive match.
Speaker 2 (56:50):
Well, let me stay on the line, you because we're
gonna have some time here for a second. Look, I
have historical perspective which I'm gonna share with the folks
later on. In April of twenty seven, the women's national
team with you know, Carl Lloyd and that group Ray Megaapino,
they lost to a U fifteen Dallas boys team five
(57:10):
to two. They weren't mad, Carl let said, Hey, they
were better, they were faster, they were bigger, stronger. They
also lost to a fifteen year old boys Bayer Munich team.
Didn't stop them from going on and winning multiple gold
medals and World Cups. So you know the notion that
I know the w NBA players are strong in are athletic. Dude,
(57:31):
has anybody been to There are plenty of six foot
ten high school kids in six eight power forwards and
guards that would blow right by Kelsey Plumb. I love Jerome.
I know I'm not an idiot. I know what I'm
looking at. But there's a cultative difference. Okay, but I'm
like it's three and zero that people just routinely think
that you and the w NBA would would mop them up.
(57:51):
You know what, play the damn game, then who's hurt
by it? Continue on you?
Speaker 12 (57:55):
I don't take you yeah, well, I mean just just
just to punctuate it as you know we're talking.
Speaker 11 (58:01):
You know, men are different than women, you know, and
we've just got you know, stronger, more athletic, jump higher,
you know, are taller, and dunk all the time, you know,
and there's so how many games do you watch in
the day of the NBA that people are dunking?
Speaker 4 (58:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (58:21):
Exactly. All right, let's move off that. What do you
got a house versus n c uh and Paul? Find
Mom's comments and then wrap it up with your door.
Speaker 11 (58:30):
Fine made a living out of being a clown, you know,
so hey, you got to give him credit for being
a clown.
Speaker 6 (58:36):
And if you're not in the FBC, you're probably.
Speaker 4 (58:39):
Like, what, what's who is his geek?
Speaker 11 (58:41):
And I don't even know who whoo who enjoys listening
to him?
Speaker 4 (58:45):
Other than.
Speaker 2 (58:48):
In fairness, he has Bill quite a brand for himself.
And I'm not trying to argue with you, but I'm
just trying to maintain some objectivity.
Speaker 4 (58:55):
No, you know, I agree.
Speaker 6 (58:56):
You know you got to give them credit for that
you manage to do it.
Speaker 7 (58:59):
So here's what I see.
Speaker 11 (59:01):
Here's a little nuance about the nil stuff, which I
think is what he's saying is just going to change everything,
and you know, the money and all that.
Speaker 6 (59:10):
So it's okay.
Speaker 11 (59:11):
I think it applies more to the basketball where it's
more like one and one and done.
Speaker 10 (59:18):
That getting paid.
Speaker 11 (59:21):
At the college level actually incentivizes the player to stay
in school a little longer than just jump to the
pros and you know, get better at their games before
they jump to the pros. And so that's the one
thing that I think is a positive in all this.
Speaker 4 (59:40):
Now, of course, we're going to watch. I mean, everybody's
gonna watch.
Speaker 11 (59:43):
I mean, if you're in college football, he's going to
keep watching it.
Speaker 7 (59:47):
You know.
Speaker 11 (59:48):
I mean I've I've loved college football more than pros
my entire life. And you know, I'm so maybe now watching.
Speaker 4 (59:55):
A little bit more with like one eye clothes.
Speaker 11 (59:57):
Because the one thing I don't like is the thing
that's worse than the NIL, I think is the transfer portal.
Speaker 4 (01:00:04):
Where he is coach.
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
Yes, where you want, that's been the real Beef Fans
are okay with players being paid, but they're not real
happy with guys changing musical chairs every single year and that, Yeah, you.
Speaker 11 (01:00:16):
Can't get behind a team and get them, you know,
get an emotional connection with the team, you know, with
guys that have been in for four years and all
that stuff, and so yeah, that's what really sucks right now.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
I believe finally, are you buying the shootdoor? Sanders Hight
that I will reiterate my ten years are covering the
lines part of the pre and post from ninety eight
to eight and covering the NFL ever since. I will reiterate,
what can you really judge and evaluate in Georgia Dunbalds.
Speaker 11 (01:00:41):
If you've got last word, you can evaluate as much
as you can with the guys standing at the podium
answering questions after practice. I mean that's you can you
can extrapolate the same like oh, good character, oh you know, yeah,
good throws. But you're right, it's you know.
Speaker 4 (01:00:58):
Get them on the field.
Speaker 11 (01:00:59):
So look, get him on the field, and let's see
what interesting is. There's three other dudes that are you know,
buying for the position. But you know, there was one
topic of a month or two ago that you had
about you know, his popularity and creating a culture, and man,
he's built one for himself. And the other thing too,
is that boy you don't hear about daddy anymore. You know,
(01:01:21):
like he's growing up and he's being a man right
in front of everybody's eyes, and he's leaving dad in
the in the rear view mirror.
Speaker 4 (01:01:29):
And I think that's cool.
Speaker 11 (01:01:30):
I think I think he's I think he's built for success.
It's because of his attitude, you know, and anything can happen.
You know, maybe if he does start well, he can
bull out in knee or somebody can you know, blindside
or whatever, and its it's done. You don't know if
he's going to go on some career real, real.
Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
Quickly, Hugh. And I think you make some good observations.
I when I see your door now, he looks like
a really happy, go lucky kid, super happy to be
in an NFL camp working hard. All that's true, I believe.
Let me ask you a question. You what if for
the next two years, uh Shodor won seven and five
and won a playoff game? You think that'd be pretty good.
Speaker 4 (01:02:05):
In what context? Good for him?
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
You can take it anywhere you want. You think that'd
be a good achievement this first year and the first
two years, first two anytime or the combined cumulative over
the next two years, seven and five as a starter
and won a playoff game.
Speaker 11 (01:02:24):
That would be equivalent sort of to what he accomplished
in college, which is he looks good and all.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
That thirteen and twelve in college and really didn't win
any be all right, I'll just spilled the beans. Listen,
I love your calls. I gotta let you run. I
want to get other people in. That's what Tim Tebow did.
He was seven and five as a starter and he
won a playoff game. If Shudor did that, he'd be
in the Hall of Fame. Tebow that could went to
throw him a trash heap. Relax, people don't drive off
the road. I'm not comparing Tebow to Shootdor, although you
(01:02:52):
think I just did. Look, he brought up a good point.
He's competing against three other guys ones won a Super Bowl.
Pick it, love Moore hate him. Has at twenty five
starts in the NFL, and he's fifteen and ten. Okay,
facts not feelings. Chudor started twenty five games in college.
He's thirteen and twl Dylan Gabriel winning to Michigan picked
(01:03:14):
him apart. He's had over sixty starts. All right, Andrew
and Bakersfield joined just thanks to your patients and putting
up with all this tonight, Andrew, what's up?
Speaker 6 (01:03:21):
Man?
Speaker 7 (01:03:22):
Hey?
Speaker 13 (01:03:23):
Okay, so I'm not trying to sound like an idiot. Okay,
So the first topic about college sports, can you explain
to me why, Okay, if you go four years to
a good college it costs a lot of money. And
if someone gets a full ride and they get meals
and they get housing for four years and all that,
(01:03:45):
why is that so poo pooed like it's nothing you understand?
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
Of course I do. I mean what I want to
try to look you, you always have thoughtful I just
kind of want to stay on topic tonight, man, you know.
I mean, look, let's deal with the here and now
versus versus theoretical discussions, which I don't mind, but I
just Paul fonbamb when he makes a statement like com
football is over look, it's changed, never to return, but
(01:04:14):
it's not over go ahead.
Speaker 13 (01:04:17):
Well, it makes the transfer from being a student athlete
to being a professional, and it makes it younger. And
so then the question becomes, well, how young is too
young to make that transfer?
Speaker 9 (01:04:31):
Do you understand?
Speaker 2 (01:04:34):
Okay, so what are you saying there? You agree with
Paul finbaum Or disagreeing, I lean.
Speaker 13 (01:04:40):
Towards his side. I think we need to be wary
about it because it's a societal issue. It will become
a societal issue, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:04:51):
Well, you know, in time it might. And as long
as it remains a billion dollar industry and people keep watching,
I think it's far from over. Any thoughts on shud
Or saying, are the the a w NBA team beat
a high school state you know, be seen as you know,
be a high school state campteam?
Speaker 7 (01:05:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:05:13):
I like Schudor, but as far as the other topic,
it's interesting. I also played soccer and I think I
was maybe under fifteen with a club team, and we
played the team that had Julie Faudi and I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:05:28):
Remember who else.
Speaker 13 (01:05:29):
But you know, it's just a scrimmage. I think we
might have tied him zero zero or two two, But
they were good though.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
You know that no one's denying. You know, they're on
terrific players. It's just a sports you know. So anyway,
all right, finally Shudor got Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:05:47):
All I have is I like him and I think
he's good, So we'll see.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
What happens, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:05:55):
I think that's fair let's see what happens and we'll
go from there. Thank you. Andrew Rick in Louisiana joins
us next. Hi, Rick, thanks for hanging on, budd.
Speaker 4 (01:06:04):
Hey, how you doing. Thanks for taking the call. As
far as the three subjects, the first one college football over, No,
I don't think anything's happened to Georgia or Alabama. I mean,
c the SDC and you know that's still gonna pick up,
you know, a lot of attention. But the thing about
(01:06:26):
the money, and I think it's a good thing because
there's probably players that are an interesting part of the
team that probably is not getting the big money. So
this gives them an opportunity to maybe pay some of
the offensive linemen, you know, some of the ones on
the practice team, you know. I just I mean, if
the school can do that, I think that's a good thing.
(01:06:49):
As far as uh.
Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
The players at Rick, I mean, and we're all watching,
I mean, I'm not gonna stop watching exactly exactly.
Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
So the next one. As far as the w n
b A playing, uh, I could be honest, just care less.
But if you want to do something, hey, go ahead
and put it on the If you're trying to do
something for the NBA All Star weekend. Hey put something
together and let it go there if you want to
(01:07:20):
try that, but at any rate, I would just The
question is what they beat him? I think that I
don't know. I think that the women would probably beat them,
but you know, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
Yeah, Sanders is in shorts and helmets, and a few
prominent people are are making him out like he's the
next coming. Okay, I'm not saying he's not. What I
am saying is there's no way you can evaluate anybody
in a legitimate fashion in shorts and helps a lot.
Speaker 4 (01:08:02):
I took that as an update, an update as to
what's going on, not that you just taking it and
run with it. Because I'm waiting for pre season, when
he gets in the helmet and playing other teams. I
think that will say something. It really isn't going to
see everything, but at least we'll get to see him
in an actual game in pre season. And you know,
(01:08:24):
another thing I'm hearing too is that you know, with
you know NFL, you still got to make the team,
which I think he'll make the team.
Speaker 2 (01:08:31):
Make it well. I think Jimmy HASLM wants him to
make the team. He's going to make the even if
he's on the practice squad half the year, he's in
an NFL. He's drawing an NFL paycheck. Okay, so that's
a that's a foregone conclusion. Rick appreciates you as always, man,
Thank you very much, measured measured comments, Bill Kittle. I
(01:08:51):
love that you're engaged.
Speaker 4 (01:08:52):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
This is a new listener to the show. Apparently. Uh so,
he's sent me about one hundred tweets. He feels very
strongly that the WNBA would kick their butt. You may
be right, but we have historical perspective to suggest otherwise.
And it doesn't matter. It's see the beauty of it
is what I've always tried to say in the Men
(01:09:13):
that Hour, and you call in so we can talk, Okay,
What I've always tried to say is that the worst
conversations are when everybody agrees, and not everybody agrees on this,
and I think that's healthy. And I think people have
been pretty honest and objective about your door. And I'm
(01:09:34):
going to reiterate that in a minute. What can you
really evaluate in shorts and helmets? And then as far
as house for us, the NCAA look college football has
been evolved since, say allowed to forward past eighty years ago,
and so many things have changed, the formation of conferences,
bowl games, rules, you name it. Now we've got this
situation and I'm not sure if Paul's into hyperbole or what.
(01:09:58):
You know, it's just not his comments are landing well.
With all due respect, and I'd love to debate him
on national radio. I would do it. Not a contentious debate,
but what are really the factors you considered in determining
college football is over? When your basic premise is it's
going to become very uneven, it's already uneven. It's already uneven.
We talked about this three years ago when Cincinnati went undefeated.
(01:10:19):
They're going to chance to win a national championship, and
they earned the right to be in the playoffs and
got snuffed. Christopher, North Carolina joined this. Christopher. Welcome into
the Bernie Frattle Show.
Speaker 9 (01:10:30):
Bernie, thanks for taking my call again, sir. It's been
a long time, and I want to just speak only
on college football because that's the topic at hand, and
it's really rowling you up. The issue is this, we're
in the middle of dead zone. Nobody cares about the NBA,
Nobody cares about what's going on in the NHL accept
certain people, So what does Paul do. He wants to
stir this up. He wants to get people to pay attention.
(01:10:53):
Why is college football is so popular, It's a multi.
Speaker 4 (01:10:56):
Billion dollar industry.
Speaker 9 (01:10:57):
He just wants to get attention.
Speaker 4 (01:10:59):
Again.
Speaker 9 (01:10:59):
The bottom line, he's trying to get people to pay
attention to him so they realize that there's something that's
big that's going on. And it's just a way of
like having a media click just say you're right.
Speaker 2 (01:11:12):
And you know what's interesting is he's so sanctimonious though
when he makes these comments, and therein lies the rub
because that's what gets attention, not that his tone of voice.
And I'm kind of worried this may not be good. No,
it's very sanctimonious. It's over and here is why. And
I got the last word. Okay, go ahead, Christopher, No, No, I.
Speaker 7 (01:11:31):
Agree with you.
Speaker 9 (01:11:32):
But I think the biggest thing Ernie is that he
just wants to hear himself talk. The four letter network
is so keen. I'm making sure I'm talking.
Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
I'm talking.
Speaker 9 (01:11:42):
Hello, I'm here.
Speaker 4 (01:11:43):
Why.
Speaker 9 (01:11:44):
I lived in Connecticut for seventeen years and I watched
that network say we are so important. We are the
god of sports, radio, sports, television, sports everything. But where
are you today? You're not are Why are you paying
for such massive on something that people don't care about
except certain people. I love hockey, But who's covering the
(01:12:05):
NHL finals? Let's see TNT. You know who's covering the
major football networks that are being considered top lively talent.
Speaker 7 (01:12:14):
It's not ESPN is so you know.
Speaker 9 (01:12:17):
I bottom line about Paul that drives me nuts. He's
a big mouth, just like other people that cover like oh,
I'm sorry the NBA or we talked about that earlier.
He is a media hound.
Speaker 4 (01:12:29):
He drives me nuts, just like mister Rogers.
Speaker 9 (01:12:32):
He drives me nuts. You can always continue to say
something to get enough attention if there was no interest,
why do we still talk about what goes on in
my state with our new football coach at UNC? I mean,
come on, folks, this game is never going to go away.
Speaker 4 (01:12:47):
It's too popular.
Speaker 9 (01:12:48):
Let me get off the line so you can get
other people. Thank you for taking my calls from.
Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
All right, Thanks Chris. I think you underscored a basic
premise of the Bernie Frattle Brandon that is, we don't
have royalty in this country. Our athletes and our entertainers
are in fact royalty, and our athletes are entertainers. And
I think to that end, college football fills that bold.
I'll give a quote that Paul Feinbaum had coming up
eight seven seven nine nine six six three sixty nine.
The Midnight Hour continues. I'm Bernie Fraddle. War comes to
(01:13:13):
you live to the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back at the Bernie
Fraddle Show. We continue on with the Midnight Hour. Steve
in Kansas City, juntes, Steve, thanks for hanging on. What
do you got for us? Hello Steve, Kansas City. You're up, buddy, Hello,
(01:13:35):
You're up. You're up? Uh?
Speaker 14 (01:13:38):
You know, I never talking about this Shader Sanders. I
don't understand why, you know, why people are making such
a big deal about him. You know, there are plenty
of average quarterbacks everywhere. I mean, this guy is the
next Bronnie James as far as I'm concerned, Why why
are they making a big deal?
Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Well, yeah, I know the answer to that, Steve. It's
because his father what's his father's name again, I forget.
He's pretty good football player, pretty good baseball player, turned
the Colorado program around. He's very flamboyant, very popular, also
very polarizing. That's why his name if his name, if
his name was shudor Slobotnik, I doubt we're talking about it.
Speaker 14 (01:14:19):
Seems like a huge marketing, a huge marketing trick to
me and he and he failed, and so if he
comes back, if he does well, you know, more power,
more power to him.
Speaker 6 (01:14:30):
But I'm not gonna make You're not buying the hype.
Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
That's the bottom line. You're not buying the hype.
Speaker 14 (01:14:35):
Yeah, he's just an average guy. If he can produce
on the field, great, more more power to him. I
don't think he's going to be able to do it.
Speaker 4 (01:14:43):
But what what was the other what?
Speaker 13 (01:14:46):
What?
Speaker 7 (01:14:46):
What was the other topics?
Speaker 2 (01:14:48):
On the table house versus NCAA. You got Paul Feinbaum
saying college football is over as we know it. I
don't agree your thoughts.
Speaker 14 (01:14:57):
Oh, oh okay, well you know it's I think the
the whole thing is going to be like baseball. I
think it's a they can't control it. It's a soft,
soft cap I think college sports may be over as
as we know it. It's just call it. Pine Baum
(01:15:22):
is speaking for the sec you know. He he likes
the thing a certain way where Auburn in Alabama could
pay to pay guys like Cam Newton all they wanted to.
You know, I think that may be a good thing.
That that it's over that that if he if he
doesn't like it, then I'm normally for it.
Speaker 7 (01:15:44):
Let's put it.
Speaker 14 (01:15:45):
Let's put it that way. That may be good if
if he's one of the most powerful, powerful people of
the sport. So so I'll give this system a little
bit of a little bit of a right real.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
Quickly, because I got to get one more caller. Who
would win a w n B A championship team versus
a high school state championship team?
Speaker 14 (01:16:05):
Boys, Oh okay, wow, now now now that's that's.
Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
A good one.
Speaker 14 (01:16:10):
I would definitely, I think it would be very close.
I think it depends who who is on your average
w NBA championship team would probably get beat by an
elite I MG academy. But if you had the all
stars of the w NBA, like an Olympic team like
Taylor Park, and.
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
They would win, all right, thanks. I appreciated test, Steve
Christ and Louisiana. Good evening. You've got the last word
on the hour tonight.
Speaker 6 (01:16:41):
Oh thanks for taking the call, you, sir.
Speaker 12 (01:16:45):
I was calling about the Paul Teime mom. I don't
think necessarily couchwals.
Speaker 8 (01:16:50):
Then I think it's lost alive it.
Speaker 12 (01:16:52):
Let's say it's mysticism.
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Fair, it's lost. It's lost its romanticism because it's a tradition.
I mean, they're talking about USC Notre Dame, not play anymore.
That's heresy. But I think I think we're starting.
Speaker 12 (01:17:06):
To all watch I'm calling, doesn't know what you saying.
So I mean I used to love college football because
I love getting involved in the recruits, getting involved in
who's gonna be a taker school for the next four years.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
All right, let's move. I just got about a minute there,
a big fella, What have you got? Do you think
the WNB would be the high school state team in
what shador? Are you buying the hype?
Speaker 12 (01:17:31):
Uh No, I don't mind the hype, and I appreciate
taking the call.
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
All right, Well, thanks Chris, you got anything else? You
got this a little bit of time? Okay, fair enough, Okay,
thank you all. Good, great job. Look, the truth of
the matter is this is fun. These are fun topics. Uh,
they're his historical perspective. I told you about the soccer game,
and the US women's team is real good about it.
(01:17:57):
I'm having a listen. I'm not gonna make a prediction.
I know who I bet on. But look, I I've
seen the w NBA. I've seen a lot of high
school basketball. Those dudes in high school could play. Okay,
just take the team Brownie was on at the academy. Yeah,
this guy's can ball. And a lot of them going
to the future in college in the NBA. So it's
(01:18:18):
not that they're playing against I'm not saying they're playing
against you know, our sisters, you know, a controllable, flatterlet's
eighth grade team. I'm talking about you know, accomplished kids.
So we've got a lot to unpack in the in
the one am hour, because I want to get into that.
I want to reiterate quickly the reason I'm trying to
be objective about Shoodoor Sanders and what the hell can
(01:18:40):
you really evaluate in shorts and you know, basically in
shorts in helmets. Okay, then I want to drill down
so people understand exactly what's going on with House versus
the NCAA, the revenue sharing limits, the enforcement mechanisms. I
want to lay it out for you. And finally we
got to get into Aaron Rodgers. He was in Mini caamp.
(01:19:00):
What should Pittsburgh legitimately expect this year? I'll break it
down for you. Keep it locked. You're listening to the
Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:19:09):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
That's right, you heard the man. Bernie Fraddle Show keeps
rolling right along. We're coming to line for the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas. Take up to
three am Pacific, six am Eastern, and I want to
thanks again to all the terrific midnight hour callers. And
we'll do this again next week. By the way, shortly
after the show, our podcast will be going up. If
you missed any of tonight's show, be sure to check
(01:19:34):
out the podcast. Just search Fox Sports Radio the Bernie
Frattle Show wherever you get your podcasts. Be sure to
follow and review the podcasts and rated five stars. They
wrote that, so I read that because I have to
read that. You can rate it five stars if you
want again, just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get
your podcast. Eat to night show posted right after we
get off the air. All right, it's a little bit
(01:19:58):
of a bummer. We had the phone mishap, but things happened,
we got through it. I'm sure we would have heard
from a lot more people. Maybe something we'll revisit later.
I want to take time to unpack all three subjects
before I get to Aaron Rodgers and shoey Otani and
some of the lot of the other stuff we got
for you tonight. The consensus among sports commentators, basketball scouts,
(01:20:22):
coaches is that high school boys teams, even though it's
not at the very top level, would be a WNBA team.
That's a consensus. Why they've observed scrimmages between WNBA teams
and top level high school teams, not even state champions,
and those high school boys have demonstrated a clear advantage.
(01:20:43):
There's simply just a physical advantage size, strength, speed, that's
the most significant factor. And they're damn good players, and
it's a faster pace of play. They can dunk, they
most of them play above the rim. Now that's a
skill that that right there as a metaphor that showcases
the athleticism that WNBA players generally don't don't have. All Right,
(01:21:06):
this is not a knock against the WNBA, just a
fact I believe now. Klay Travis in October twenty twenty
three offered to put up I believe, a million dollars
of his own money to make these make this game happen.
He wanted the Las Vegas ass who'd won the championship
to play a high school state champion team. Clay Travis's
(01:21:28):
prediction that the high school boys win by thirty. The
game has never played, never will be played. Maybe the
question I should have asked was would you like to
see that played? Ain't gonna happen because if the WNBA one,
what will people say? Well, big deal, they beat high
school players and if they lose, yeah, they ain't gonna
be good. Their ratings aren't are already aren't very good.
(01:21:49):
And the vast majority of people don't take the league series.
It's a real league. These are good players. They're good players,
but either suffering from what I call the comittition in
football league syndrome. Watch the Canadian Football League. They're damn
good players. You can't tell them who's playing who's playing
the Night the rough Riders versus the Rough Riders again,
or maybe they're playing the rough Riders. You can't name
(01:22:10):
the players, you don't know the rules, You don't want
the end zones longer, the fields wider. What the hell's
a ace? Why do they do three? You don't know
any of it. But moreover, you don't know the rivalries.
You don't have Bears, Vikings, you don't have Chiefs Bills.
You know, you don't have Raven Steelers. There's just no perspective.
You don't know. That's what I believe the WNBA has.
(01:22:32):
But look there, they're doing their best. We'll see, we'll
see what happens. So that's that was one of the
top topics tonight. Now I want to get into the
Shoodoor Sanders thing our root. I don't have a favorite
team anymore. I just don't. I've been accused of being
a Lion's walk. Maybe I am. I have an affinity
for the Lions. I cover the team for twelve years.
(01:22:53):
It's been seventeen years in Detroit. Who I covered the
team for long and that as part of the pre
and posed for twelve years. It'd be just a great
story if they want it all be a great sturf.
The Cleveton Browns won it all, be a great stuff.
The Minnesota Vikings won it all? How about the Buffalo
Bills to this day of my favorite thirty for thirty
is the Four Falls of Buffalo. Just love that. Watch
(01:23:13):
it once twice a year for posterity. So where am
I going with this? I wrote for the story It
would in fact be a great story if somehow Shudor
Sanders started led the Browns to victories, maybe even a playoffs,
that would be the story. If he fails or failure
(01:23:34):
is relative, if he never really announts to anything, fine,
he joins the thousands of other quarterbacks, so the odds
are against you. But the real story would be But
when you've got a guy who does fifteen hours a
week on this network trying to force feed me that
he should start based on shorts and helmets drills, Come on, man,
are you goofing on us? Are you just goofing on us?
(01:23:55):
Is it April fools? Or do you really mean this?
And here is why. Okay, you can have an opinion,
but try to have an opinion with information. If you man,
this is a really good pizza. That's an opinion. Maybe
you've had information because you ate the pizza. How remember
years ago some blowharder was saying Calvin Johnson quit in
the NFL because he was tired of losing. No, his
(01:24:17):
mom was a doctor, never wanted him to play. He
was you know, they had to prop them up in
practice the last three years. He loved the lines, wanted
to be there. He couldn't physically do it anymore. But
I hear's the guy in the air saying, you know,
somebody defended Himself's an opinion. No, it's an opinion with information.
It's blowhard. This is I'm gonna give you my what
I believe is as an insightful NFL perspective on you door,
(01:24:46):
What can you really learn in shorts and helmets? A
little bit. You can observe their throwing motion, you can
observe their mechanics. You can observe the release point and footwork. Okay,
arm strength. The drills can showcase quarterbacks ability to be
accurate and with velocity. But if you're looking at those,
(01:25:08):
you know, six on six, five on five, seven on
seven drills and shorts and helmets, he was making throws
that were good and the same kind of throws of
three or five star hig school quarterback would make because
you don't have to do any mental processing. You don't
have to scan the field and make a quick decision.
This is not a scenario that's simulating anything that is
(01:25:30):
resembling of a game. Now here's what you cannot tell
in a shorts and helmets evaluation game simulation. This is
a completely controlled environment. It's a drill. There is no
way in shorts and helmets you can you can even
come close to replicating the kind of speed and anger
(01:25:54):
and chaos and pressure of a real NFL game where
a quarterback plays a position with his eyes drops back,
makes metal snapshots that it has to make decisions and
execute under duress against a live defense, with real bullets flying,
against world class athletes coming at you with bad intentions.
You're not gonna find that out in shorts and helmets.
(01:26:15):
Doesn't a confer pocket presence. You're standing back there all
day long. Do whatever you want, smoke a cigarette, have
a cup of coffee. You don't have to navigate the pocket.
You don't have to sense any pressure because there isn't
any You don't have to extend to play because that's
not what they do in drills. These are controlled environments. Also,
(01:26:35):
there is nothing in a shorts and helmets drill that
can even remotely give you a clue of a quarterback
and their football IQ. Okay, reading a defense in the
NFL is very complex, making pre snap judgments very difficult.
Calling audibles. You're not gonna do that in a shorts
(01:26:58):
and helmets but you're gonna do that in a real game.
And the other thing is it doesn't really showcase the
mental toughness or physical toughness re card to play the
position bouncing back from adversity. Now, I do think that
Shudor Sanders showed toughness in college and resiliency and competitiveness,
no question, But he also holds the ball too long.
So what we're really talking about here is not whether
(01:27:21):
or not Shudoor Sanders is a good quarterback, but does
his arm, does his athleticism, does his pocket presence translate
to NFL caliber? And that's why he dropped in the
draft because a lot of people who get paid a
lot of money and they're still wrong a lot they
know what the hell they're doing. You have to win
(01:27:42):
games in the NFL you don't keep your job. No way.
They're passing up on this guy if he can get
on the field and help win games. So there's one
hundred and twenty quarterbacks in mini camp this week, we
keep talking about the same one. I know why Steven
Kansas City, the caller, why we're talking because his last
name is not Slovotnic, it's not Shador Gazinski, it's Shadoor Sanders.
(01:28:05):
The dude drives the rules. Rice. Where's Rolex? His talks
a lot, I mean decided he don't I don't need
to go to NFL pre we we know where we going.
He's been humbled, but you know what, he's handled really well.
He's in there working hard. I know I talked to you.
He has also got great attitude and he's enthusiastic. He
likes being in the NFL. He's gonna get his chance.
(01:28:27):
He's gonna get his chance. But he's competing against other guys.
I don't know why people bashed Dylan Gabriels too small,
shut up, too.
Speaker 10 (01:28:35):
Small for what.
Speaker 2 (01:28:37):
He started sixty games in college football with two stok
You know he started at Oregon, he went into Michigan
picked him apart. I don't know if she do would
have done that. He was outstanding at Oklahoma, outstanding, started
sixty games, one almost one, like eighty percent of them.
Shador did a good job at Colorado too, but he
was thirteen and twelve. Canny Pickett, I don't care whether
(01:28:58):
you like him or hate him, or you couldn't pick
him out of a police lineup. He's fifteen and ten
as an NFL starter, He's at twenty five starts, he said,
many starts as Shador Sanders. Who you gonna hit your
wagon to if you've got to win an NFL game?
You know, I hear the sound, But about it.
Speaker 5 (01:29:12):
This guy.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
They're raving about a guy who's never played one snop
in the NFL. Well, you're you're raving about a guy
who's never play one snap of the NFL. Is if
he's you know, in the shorts and helmets Hall of Fame.
And then you got Joe Flacco, he's won a Super Bowl.
Make fun of them all you want. The dude knows
what they all he's doing. So the long and the
short of it is, I think the you know, Shudor
(01:29:34):
Sanders deserves his chance, and that'll be up to Kevin Stefanski. Yeah,
four quarterbacks in camp. But again in conclusion, if you're
in shorts and helmets, they provide some information for evaluating
quarterback prospects. Okay, get you get a glimpse of their
physical traits. You get to you know, get a glimpse
of their mechanics, their fundamental abilities. But it's complete conjecture
(01:29:59):
to to assume that because you look so good with
you know, in shorts and helmets, you're going to step
right in. You can come on. An evaluation of an
NFL quarterback is extremely comprehensive, and you know what, it
relies on most game film against real players that are
(01:30:19):
breathing down on you. That's how scouts can deserve a
quarterback performs in actual game situations, under pressure, against live competition,
when something is on the line. Simple as that. Coming up.
I want to break down the house versus the NCAA lawsuit. Okay,
this represents a fundamental shift in college sports. There are
(01:30:42):
significant changes as to house student athletes are going to
be compensated and how the NCAA operates. There are four
categories that want to break down this is important. Hey,
we're ten saturdays away from college Football ten Saturdays. By
the way, did you know since twenty twenty one Courtesia
Ralph there have been twenty one conference games. As the
(01:31:02):
season opener, the Dogs are fourteen six and one seventy percent.
I have to share that with my buddy Jason McIntyre.
Dogs are five and a half plus five and a
half were hiring twelve and two against his spread. That's
eighty five percent. In other words, when two conference teams
play Week one, lean to the dog coming up house
(01:31:23):
versus NCAA. I'm gonna tell you what I don't think
the media has done a great job of reporting in
a granular fashion. We'll give it to you in bite
sized pieces. By the way, for the best pregame show
every weekend, be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio's Contown,
presented by BETMGM, every Saturday and Sunday morning from nine
am to noon Eastern sixty eight nine am Pacific. We'll
count you down to all the biggest games. Tune into Contown,
(01:31:44):
presented by bet MGM, every Saturday and Sunday morning, right
air on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
I'm Bernie Friday. We're comedy line from the Las Vegas,
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Don't go away. You're listening to
the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (01:31:57):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports to talk lineup
in the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports
Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR
to listen live.
Speaker 2 (01:32:09):
All right back in the Bernie Final Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to your line from the Las Vegas studios, and
I want to pick up where I left off. We're
ten saturdays away from college football. According to Paul Feinbaum,
it's he in the college football and he gave his
reasons why, so what is he reacting to. He's reacting
to the House versus NCAA lawsuit that makes a tremendous
(01:32:32):
fundamental shift and a lot of changes in the way
student athletes are gonna be compensated. So we're gonna break
it down right now from an academic perspective one, these
are the key takeaways. You are now going to be
compensating athletes directly, and there's gonna be revenue sharing. Okay,
schools will now directly pay their athletes. There's gonna be
(01:32:55):
a captive mount Per school that started as at twenty
point five million this year, but it'll increase annually. Here's
another outcome of the judgment. There's going to be back
pay for previous athletes. Now, the NCAA and Power Conferences
are going to end up paying out almost two point
eight billion with a b billion dollars in damages to
(01:33:16):
current and many former Division one athletes for past restrictions
on profiting from their name, image and likeness. And they
will settle the prior anti trust claims. The NIL deals
are going to continue. Now student athletes can still sign
NIL deals with third parties, but now the settlement permits
enforcement of these standards prevent deals that circumvent their revenues.
(01:33:39):
You're ain't cap and they're not based on valid business
purpose and fair market venue, so they're going to have
to be signed off by by an accounting firm. Yeah.
Now they're also eliminating scholarship limits and the introduction of
roster limits. This is kind of big no more scholarship caps.
The NCAA will eliminate previous scholarship limits. That's gonna off.
(01:34:01):
That's going to allow schools to offer as many scholarships
as they wish and roster sizes. And now this one's
interesting because if you go back to say the seventies,
when Barry Switcher was coaching at at at Oklahoma, he
was a brilliant recruiter. He'd go into the state of
Texas minunderstanding he get the top two players in Texas
(01:34:23):
and put them on scholarship just so Texas couldn't get them.
Then they created the scholarship rules, the thirty ninety scholarship rules.
You can only have a total of ninety kids on
roster in thirty one year over four years. It was
not that complicated, but it put a cap around. That's gone.
Now that's gone. Now roster limits are going to be enforced. Okay,
(01:34:44):
there're gonna be roster limits for D one sports. How
you're an athlete and your roster spot was cutting anticipation
in the limit, you're gonna be grandfathered in. It won't
count against the roster caps for the remainder of your eligibility.
So you're gonna have unlimited scholarships and roster it's at
least for the next couple three years. That are to
be outrageous and you want, you know, everybody can get paid. Theoretically,
(01:35:07):
now there is going to be an enforcement mechanism which
really didn't exist before. It certainly didn't exist. It's going
to be called the CSC, the Colline Sports Commission. It's
a brand new entity. It'll oversee all the revenue sharing
and NIL deal enforcement. So what's going to try to
do is provide some structure and neutralize things. I think
Deloitte is going to be the firm that's going to
(01:35:28):
run a platform called NIL and nil deals over six
hundred dollars are going to be reviewed to reflect the
show fair market value and have a real valid business purpose.
Before it was totally paid for play, which is still is.
But again this is nil and if you go to
a dispute, NIL enforcement will be resolved through arbitration, which
(01:35:52):
is good because it's a more transparent process for athletes.
So there are some you know, unintended constant says of
this which are going to arise. Certainly you're gonna have
some potential challenges and there are still some unresolved issues.
You've got Title nine concerns because this settlement does not
explicitly mandate gender equitable distribution of revenue sharing. I think
(01:36:16):
you can expect to see some Title nine lawsuits when
you you know you consider high profile players a couple
of years ago, Caitlin Clark at Iowa and your rees
at lsu Juju at UCL at USC. You get my point.
I want to I don't want to try to pretend
like I know all these players. The bottom line is
if there isn't gender equitability, which they haven't really addressed,
(01:36:39):
some of these higher profile players might have, you know,
a lawsuit, which I know. That's where Paul Finbaum was
concerned as well. We really how much of our focus
are we're going to keep on the field. How much
is going to be taken away? All right? Because the
college has been you know, litigation one litigation after another,
and it does get to be tiresome. And there's one
(01:37:01):
thing that Paul Finebaum did say that to me, I'm
curious what Mark Emmert would say, because when Paul Finebaum,
and again all the starts toly first fine Baum said quote,
(01:37:22):
I could not help but think about ten years ago.
That's when Mark Emmert was then the president of the
NCAA essentially said college athletes will be paid over my
dead body. Well he's clearly still alive, but the NCAA
is dead. That's what Paul Finbaum said, So this is
not without some questions and some unresolved issues, and since
(01:37:42):
there's always been litigation, you can expect litigation to continue.
Issues like athlete employment status, title line compliance, and what
is the definition of fair market value in NIL deals
that will face legal challenges. There's also going to be
quite an impact on smaller schools and non revenue sports.
With smaller schools and non revenue generating sports, are they
(01:38:07):
going to face financial challenges when they have to compete
with larger athletic departments with higher revenue sharing caps. I
don't want to see Olympic sports go away. I believe
you have to have a minimum of fourteen sports to
be Division one. You know, I don't want to see
wrestling programs go away because of this. So, if there
is in fact revenue sharing, and the best thing they
can do is make this gender equitable so they could
(01:38:28):
keep lawsuits to minimum, tooth of the matter.
Speaker 10 (01:38:31):
Is now.
Speaker 2 (01:38:33):
There truly is enough of the pie to go around
for everybody everybody. I really believe that. And you know,
if you want to get greedy because you want your
share and half the other guys, then we're not gonna
stop watching the games on TV, and they're still going
to be the same lopsided competitive balance or imbalance as
(01:38:54):
it were. We're still gonna watch, We're not stopping. So
what's the future of college sports? Well, its slowly, but
surely if you haven't noticed very much shifting toward a
professional model. I know some people push back on that
because the contracts and free I think, but the tooth
of the matter is this whole settlement dramatically changes the
(01:39:17):
definition of amateurism and significantly alters the amateurism model of
college athletics. Okay, so they're getting closer and closer to
a professional sports structure. Because you're going to have direct
athlete compensation and revenue sharing, you're also going to have
something else, collective bargaining. The concept of collective bargaining and
(01:39:38):
potential unionization is gained traction. Do I think student athletes
will have re union? I no, I don't. No, you're
in or out of college three four years. No, I
don't think they can coalesce that way. You've got you know,
three hundred and twenty six division ones. No, No, I
don't see that it's gaining traction. What are the hell
they need a union? For what exactly would that do
(01:39:59):
for than that they're not getting now they already hit
the jackpot. There's also going to be a call for
federal legislation because the NCAA and Power Conferences, they're currently
lobbying Congress for national legislation to pre up state INNIL
laws and provide ANA trust immunity. So you see where
they're going with that. They want even more power. And frankly,
there should be instead of state by state by state
(01:40:21):
nil you know stipulations. I think that frankly, there should be,
you know, a situation where maybe it is more uniform
across the board. By the way, in case you missed it,
Aaron Rodgers was in mini camp this week in Pittsburgh.
He's not wearing Terry Bradshaw's old number, that's for sure,
(01:40:45):
but he is wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey. Now, what's
funny about this is that this will be a story
all year. And here's why many athletes and celebrities are
universally loved. No matter what, Aaron Rodgers will never be
(01:41:07):
on that list despite his status is one of the
greatest quarterbacks of all time. If you just look around
social media, what's blown in the wind. Here's a dude who,
at forty one years old, just signs a contract with
the Steelers. Is largely loathed by a great portion of
the social media group Think Echo Chamber. As matter of fact,
(01:41:34):
you know there was a I think they had a
big an article recently in Pittsburgh do you like this
deal or not? And one Steelers fan just said boo
with about ten O's Okay. Now, what's interesting is the
fans have disdained for Rogers, or a lot of them
do not all but believe it or not, not all
of his former teammates feel the same way. Right, Remember
(01:41:57):
some followed them from Green Bay to New York and
some encourage them to re turned to the Gents was
his decision. And despite the fact that Aaron Rodgers was
very frustrated back in twenty twenty, it seems like an
inch in history. Now, remember how bent when Aaron Rodgers
found out that the Packers picked Jordan Love and moved
up to get him. Well, it was not really reported fairly.
(01:42:18):
Rogers actually willingly tutored Jordan Love, and believe it or not,
Jordan Love invited Aaron Rodgers to his wedding. So this
is a very complex, complex issue. So the real question
now becomes, forget everything that's happened, and there have been
plenty of forty one year old quarterbacks you've done well.
(01:42:39):
You know about Tom Brady, how about Warren Moon through
twenty five touchdown passes at the age of forty one,
he was outstanding. The value that Aaron Rodgers rings to
Pittsburgh might be more positive than most people are willing
to admit or realize. But that's not the real discussion here.
I'm dancing around it. The real question, the real question,
(01:43:00):
he's whether Aaron Rodgers is still starting level talent. If
you look at it on film, there are pros and cons.
I say yes, because the quarterback position in the NFL
is the thinnest in all the sports. That's not debatable.
The failure eate of first rounders is fifty percent. It's
(01:43:20):
more than that. You've heard me give the commentary over
the years many times. So on the upshot. Look, let's
be fair to Aaron Rodgers. First, he had a broken
thumb early in twenty twenty two. Then he has the
achilles tear in twenty twenty three and reported hamstring. He
had knee and ankle injuries last season, so in fairness,
(01:43:41):
Rogers has not been fully healthy since twenty twenty one.
That year, at age thirty eight, Rogers led Green Bay
to a thirteen to three record through for four thousand yards,
thirty seven touchdowns, only four interceptions. The Packers were on
their way to the NFC Championship and a block punt
claused him to not go. All right, I get it,
(01:44:02):
that was four years ago. His mobility, rogers mobility was
very inconsistent last season. But as hard as I as
harsh as I was with Rogers on a lot of things,
he showed some glimmers as the season went on, because
you know, at one time he was very agile. Okay,
(01:44:24):
So that causes you to think about two things. One
his killes recovery played a role last season, and two
the Steelers they have a better offensive line, but it's
a young offensive line that's going to be critical because
if Rogers can move like he showed and flashes in
New York in the second half of the season, the Steelers.
(01:44:48):
You know this, this mischie got's about. This was going
to be Mike Tomblin's first losing year based on what
he went ten and seven last year with Justin Fields
and Russell Wilson. He went nine and eight with Kenny Pick.
He can't go and win nine or ten games with
Aaron Rodgers assuming he stays healthy. Best case scenario, a
healthy Rogers, a somewhat nimble Rogers returns to his form
(01:45:11):
at least back in twenty twenty one. The guy can
throw a deep ball. Still, He can throw a deep ball.
His arm talent is still pretty much there, although I
know he missed a couple deep throws last year in
the Jets, But you gotta fletch that whole thing down
the toilet. I realized that dk met like Metcalf, is
not a precise rot runner, and that could be a
(01:45:32):
collision course waiting to happen with Aaron Rodgers. But he's
got explosiveness to beat the band, and he's going to
create lighter boxes for Arthur Smith's because they're gonna have
a run heavy offense right that opens up passing lanes.
Rodgers buys in the Smith's play action passing game. If
he does, what do you want to bet? Rogers and
(01:45:52):
Metcalf have quite a duel this year. It's theoretical, it's conjecture,
But again it's an opinion based on information. Beyond that,
Pittsburgh I believe gives Aaron Rodgers the best defense he
will have had in fifteen years. That defense helped Aaron
Rodgers get to the Super Bowl and the only super
Bowl he won. All Right, So the question is, if
(01:46:16):
all this works out, can Aaron Rodgers lead Pittsburgh to
the playoffs and maybe even their first playoff wins since
twenty eighteen. You cannot rule that out. That is not
a zero. All right, that's the positive outlook. Coming up,
we'll take a look at the negative outlook. We have
to be fair about this. For the best pregame show
(01:46:38):
every week, and be sure to tune into Fox Sports
Radio's Countdown presented by BETMGM every Saturday and Sunday morning
from nine am to noon Eastern six to nine am Pacific,
will count you down to all the biggest games. Tune
into Countdown presented by BETMGM every Saturday and Sunday morning
right aeron Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
Coming up, we continue on Aaron Rodgers. I gave you
(01:47:00):
the plus side of the ledger. Let's balance the sheet
and look at the negative side of the ledger because
you have to at least evaluate and consider the worst
case scenarios. As Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates are
now official. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We are company live from
Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio Studios. So keep it locked
(01:47:21):
right here. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on
Fox Sports Radio. All right, back with the Bernie Fradle Show.
Fox Sports Radio, coming a line from the Tirec dot
Com studios. You're in Las Vegas. So we're trying to
give an objective analysis Aaron Rodgers in terms of what
can the Steelers really expect? And on the positive note,
he really hasn't been healthy since twenty twenty one, broken thumbs, achilles, tears,
(01:47:44):
am springs, knees, ankles, all that. If he can somewhat
revert to his twenty twenty one form, which is not
a zero. But then of course, together question is would
sustained for the full seventeen week season, and then I
think this can bode well for Pittsburgh. I know him
in the minority. I got a funny feeling that's gonna
(01:48:04):
work out. But we'll see. It could be wrong because
there is a downside too, and you can't tell the
story without, you know, without really looking at both sides objectively.
So this version of Rogers, he still has a little
bit of the y factor. He shows glimmers of it,
(01:48:26):
shows shades of it, but really it looks like it's
a limited version of that, meaning he's not really able
to throw the ball with a total torque or step
up when necessary when you look at him on film.
In the best sports case scenario, Rogers will probably have
to fight through some physical limitations to at least, you know,
(01:48:47):
start fourteen to fifteen games this year, and at least
maybe take a page from the twenty fifteen Peyton Manning book,
and the Broncos won a Super Bowl. Now Manning was
aging then, Okay, he clearly I think he's played thirty
eight then, and he struggled. He threw for nine touchdowns
and seventeen interceptions, but he gave Denver just enough of
(01:49:09):
a passing game because he had two running backs, cig
Anderson and Ronnie Hillman, and the Broncos had a historically
strong defense, and Manning still, even though he didn't put
up gaudy numbers, knew what to do on third down,
fourth quarter and in the red zone, and those are
your money situations for quarterbacks that don't pay it a punt.
(01:49:30):
So I think if Rogers can channel twenty fifteen Peyton
Manning and when it matters most, can you be great
when the situation the man's greatness that remains to be seen,
or there could be a real hell of a bad
This could go really poorly. Worst case scenario because if
I don't want to cast dispersions, but if Rogers play
(01:49:51):
reverts to his earlier twenty twenty four to form last year,
and he starts to publicly question coaching and management and
teammates like he did in Green Bay, and he starts
to give unsolicited comments and in a very divisive world,
this could be disastrous. According to a writer from The
(01:50:12):
Athletic named Mike Jones, I'll quote him. He says. Mike
Jones says, quote, if we're being honest, the best realistic
scenario involves this experiment going woefully wrong, and at last,
the Steelers find themselves in position to draft the top
flight quarterback. At worst, the Rogers and Steelers labor through
(01:50:33):
another season and finish a take above five hundred, as
is customary only to remain stuck in football purgatory with
no clear path out. Unquote. That is Mike Jones from
the Athletic Now. For the most part, I think all
the concerns regarding Rogers and whatever impact he's going to
have on the Pittsburgh Steelers, not only on the field
(01:50:54):
but the culture as well, are a little bit overblown
because Mike Tomlin is the boss. Okay, somehow they kept
Antonio Brown under wraps, and I'm choosing not to report
on that story tonight. You've heard it. He's wanted for
attempted murder. I don't know what happened, and I don't
talk about things. I don't know what the hell I'm
talking about. I'm hearing reports. He's overseas now too, and
(01:51:15):
he would not want to be an issues. But I
don't know anything about it. But you remember, Antonio Brown
was no choir boy with the Steelers, but he produced
for the Steelers and put up gaudy numbers, and they
kept him in line. If anything, Rogers, in his notorious
attention to detailing willingness when he really wants to be
buttoned up in crisp and mentor young players, should be
(01:51:38):
a net positive. I realize there's some on field decline,
potentially a lot of on field decline. But if he's healthy,
I don't think you need to get that concerned about
that until you have to. Right, there might be something
left in the tank. I've told you about other quarterbacks
you know that have frankly done pretty well well after
(01:52:01):
you know, when you when you get you know Rogers
agent above. I've done some research on this, and I
mean there's a list of guys. There's a lot of
all time great quarterbacks who did pretty well in their
later years. And I just mentioned Warren Moon, right, Joe Montana,
John Elway, Moon was what twenty five touchdown passes. So
(01:52:26):
you have to let this play out. Give the dude
who's day in court. There might be something there. I'm
giving Pittsburgh top credit for taking sort of this risk
free approach last year. They got a discounted Russell Wilson,
they got justin fields for a song, and that allowed
him to avoid reaching for a quarterback because I don't
(01:52:48):
really like this quarterback draft this year, and they weren't
going to get cam Ward and I know it was
very uninspiring draft for them to try to reach for
one and you know they draft. You know Kenny pick
It was drafted in twenty twenty two. I know what
he wants to pick on him. He's not going to
win you a super Bowl most likely. But he's also
fifteen and ten as a starter. That's not nothing. Justin
(01:53:09):
Fields is fourteen and thirty as a starter. Again, just
the facts, not the feelings. Best of all, again, going
back to Mike Jones of The Athletic said quote, if
this experiment doesn't work well, the Steelers should be positioned
to pick early in twenty twenty six. But if Mike
Tomlin's nineteen season ends with a positive record, no playoff win,
(01:53:33):
Pittsburgh must he put must in italics, must use the
plethora of compensatory picks they're projected to receive in twenty
twenty six, including an extra third rounder, to justify a
big swing upward, because it is a potential to load
a twenty twenty six quarterback class. Then you might get
a new quarterback that can change the franchise. Now, everything
(01:53:56):
we've talked about is just pablum. It's the pros and cons.
It's what we're dealing with. How do other people who
get paid to do this feel about this, Well, I
gotta tell you. One former Jets executive set he believed
the Steelers will be completely irrelevant in twenty twenty five.
And he said that, you know, he thinks Aaron Rodgers
(01:54:19):
is going to be irrelevant by Thanksgiving, said quote, the
Steelers will be a non playoff team with a forty
two year old quarterback who was a legend that's going
off on the sunset who said that I got a
respect a lot Mike Tannenbaum. You see him on TV.
He's an interesting guy. Thanks to Mike Tannenbaum, Howie Roseman
(01:54:39):
has a job as a GM, the president of the
Philadelphia Eagles. You may or may not know this story.
Howie Roseman motor wrote over one thousand letters to all
the NFL teams. It was the most classic letter of
all time. He said, I've never played football, ever been
on a football field, never done it. But I'll be
the best GM in the history of the NFL if
(01:54:59):
you hiraby. Mike Cannabaum was so curious he agreed to
talk to him. He said, they don't really have anything
for you, not even an internship, but he called one
of his buddies in Philadelphis. He needed to talk to
this guy and the rest of his history. So Tannabaum,
this is not his first barbecue. But also, if we're
being fair, you could also say that Mike Tannabaum doesn't
(01:55:20):
exactly have the greatest track record. When discussing Steelers quarterbacks
many many years ago, he said Ben Roethlisberger was going
to be bad out of the twenty twenty one season,
said I expected to be benched by the middle of
the season. Well, Roethlisberger through twenty two touchdown passes ten interceptions,
he wasn't benched, and the he led the the Steelers
(01:55:43):
to the playoffs in his final season. Now I know
I can't have it both ways. I just mentioned that
in helmets and shorts you couldn't really judge exactly what
the hell was going on with Door Sanders, and I
gave multiple reasons why.
Speaker 11 (01:56:04):
But in.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Shorts and helmets, apparently Rogers has been turning heads in Pittsburgh.
But this is a guy who's also won, you know,
hundreds of games in the NFL playoffs, Super Bowl. He's
a Hall of Famer, four time MVP. So you'll you'll
cut me a little slack here because According to reports,
Aaron Rodgers immediately made it a pressure that he has
(01:56:26):
something left in the tank. And you know, Tuesday he
showed up for mandatory mini camp and one of the
radio personalities for Katie K Pittsburgh of a long time
respected station, Richie Walsh, he was in a tenants in practice.
He came away. He said he was very impressed with
how Rogers arm looked right off the back. He said, quote,
(01:56:49):
I know it's just throwing footballs around in sports, but
he still has an arm. He's slinging it around. It
just comes out so quick. He's aligning it, he's slinging it,
he's firing it. There's zip on the ball. Throwing thirty
yards down the field with some zip twenty one years
in the NFL, Rodgers hass, now, that's quite an accomplishment.
I'll get it. He's a pro. He's a future Hall
(01:57:10):
of Famer, no doubt about that. And he will likely
pass Ben Roethlisberger for the fifth most passing yards in
the league. He only needs about eleven hundred yards to
do that. And if you're willing to keep an open
mind and just flush twenty twenty four, it was not
only a disaster for Rogers. It was a disaster for
(01:57:33):
the New York Jets. They came into the year with
playoff expectations and yeah, we know they only win five
and twelve. But Rogers, if you look at it and objectively,
did kind of hold his own on the aggregate. And again,
he's coming off a torny two achilles, he suffered a
week one of the year before. Still he threw for
you know, thirty nine hundred yards, twenty eight touchdowns and
(01:57:54):
eleven interceptions in his only full season with the Jets.
The organization had enough, They all had enough fatigue. They
released him after welcoming in the new regime and after
months of waiting round for a decision, which I believe
I will always believe Pittsburgh and Aaron had a handshake
agreement and that Rogers had some personal issues to contend to.
(01:58:14):
I believe that Rogers is on the Steelers' roster several
years of instability at the quarterback position. Maybe for one year,
they're trying to get as much out of Rogers in
one year that they can possibly get out of him.
Maybe he provides a spark on offense and he helps
lead the charge, and Pittsburgh is back in the postseason
and maybe they even won a playoff game. Again, it's
(01:58:36):
all conjecture, but you know what, we're all going to
be watching. And the opposite of love is not hate,
it's indifference. Haters will be watching as well. Coming up
brand newfool and what my name? Keep it locked to
the Bernie Fraddles Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:58:52):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:58:55):
Yep, bet straight, you heard the man of the Bernie
Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frati.
We're coming to line from the Fox Sports Radio studios
here in a Las Vegas. Really appreciate again all the
efforts of everybody in our midnight hour calls. That will
always be something we'll do every every week, and it's
(01:59:15):
people shouldn't take it too serious. And the idea is
to have a sports discussion a little off the beaten track.
And we're coming up on my favorite month of the year,
which is July. Because the sports talk show hosts hate July.
I love July because it gives us a blank canvas
to talk about things as opposed to simply react to things.
(01:59:37):
But I'll tell you one of the things we do
react to because here on the Bernie Frattle Show, as
Jogi Barrett would say, you can observe a lot by watching.
That's exactly what we do. Because around this great country
of ours, from Seed to Oily Sea, and even around
the globe, well, people engage in behaviors. And sometimes these
behaviors are very questionable. Now, sometimes they are innocuous, they're
(01:59:58):
kind of silly, they're kind of stupid. Other times they're
more serious. Many times they run a file of the law,
and sometimes they're very serious. Then involves criminal charges and
people end up in jail. But anyway you slice it, anyway,
you describe it, anyway you characterize these behaviors, we always will.
They always leave us scratching our head and asking ourselves,
what kind of brand new fool you?
Speaker 1 (02:00:25):
So, what kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (02:00:29):
Well, we take you to Deltona, Florida, and this one's
a beauty because you're gonna meet mister Dewey. And you know,
criminals like to leave clues, and this one is this
is this is a beauty because the first thing mister
Dewey did was he went to a Florida neighborhood and
he started, you know, case in the place, and he
(02:00:51):
saw lots of parked cars right in the roll and
a couple of homes, and he decided he would go
car to car to see what he could steal. And
what's interesting is, you know, criminals, you need to you know,
food is fuel. You don't begin any athletic endeavor without,
you know, nourishing yourself. So what mister Dewey found in
(02:01:12):
a trash can conveniently near the first car he broke into,
was a half eaten pizza, So why not he took
the pizza box, carried it, and as he continued his
little spree, he was, you know, have a little nash
having some pizza, right, So according to police, uh, well,
we'll say we're gonna get to that in a second, right,
(02:01:34):
So what what what basically ensued was mister Dewey went
car to car and that actually, you know, he'd open
center consoles and he'd find he'd open glove boxes and
every one of the cars you could see had been
rummaged through. And he was able to get away with wallets,
and he was able to get away with believe it
(02:01:56):
or not, somebody had a nine millimeter handgun he stole
and he's eating his pizza and he's making his deals
and making his rounds. And then somebody witnessed this, right,
he witnessed this, and again he ended up getting credit
cards and all sorts of stuff. But finally he stopped
(02:02:17):
at a gas station where police questioned and they weren't
sure if they had the right guy, even though he
had been pointed out by a couple of witnesses. But
that wasn't quite enough. But then in one of the
cars they found a pizza box with a couple of
(02:02:38):
leftover pizzas in it, and he hadn't finished them yet,
but was what was the Mister Dewey had pizza sauce
on his face, which correlates to the pizza box in
the cars and sauce in some of the cars where
(02:02:58):
he got a little sloppy and when the police said
he was under arrest. According to the news release, this
cracks me up. The quote that mister Dewey said was
you got me red handed, so mean he did their
pizza sausage of forget a pizza sauce of bread? You
already do that? Well now, mister Dewey faces charges of
(02:03:18):
arm burglary of a conveyance, burglary of a conveyance, four
counts of fraud, and the use of credit cards, grand
theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a
convicted fellow, theft and dealing was still in property. At
least he got the free pizza out of the deal,
which leads us to our typical conclusion. Mister Dewey of Florida,
who burglarizes a bunch of cars while eating pizza, was
(02:03:43):
caught red handed because he forgot to wipe his mouth
with a napkin. Mister Dewey of Florida, Deltona, Florida, What
kind of brand new fool?
Speaker 7 (02:03:51):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (02:03:54):
All right? Brianna? Take it away?
Speaker 15 (02:03:56):
Alrighty. So we know people usually get kicked out of
bars for different reasons. My dad was a bartender Happy
Father's Day and in Las Vegas, so I'm sure he's
he had to kick out a few people back in
his day of being a Las Vegas bartender, which you know, obviously, Bernie,
people get super rowdy out there, right, So we're gonna
(02:04:17):
go to Kentucky. This man was known as a cowboy Cody,
so he was visiting an establishment and he did have
a history of being kind of kicked out before, but
he all, you know, they always made up. The bartender
always kind of forgave him and he would just come
back right. Usually in a small town of Murray, Kentucky.
(02:04:41):
So his name was Jonathan Mason. He was forty years old,
and like I said, he was known as a cowboy Cody.
So I guess there was one night he just got
a little bit too rowdy. A little bit before nine pm,
the police, the Murray Police Department, received a call that
somebody had released a live raccoon into the bar and
(02:05:05):
it had fit two patrons. He had just left the
raccoon there to go into the bar and then he
had driven off and he was stopped at a traffic stop,
you know, and obviously was arrested. He was charged with assault,
criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, and failure to have proper insurance
(02:05:25):
as well. And he's a scheduled to appear in court
later next week. So Cowboy Cody aka Jonathan Murray, what
kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (02:05:41):
Cowboy quote Cody? So much for happy our cowboy Cody,
you're gonna be dot now all right? Well, that's the thing.
A brand new fool. You know, people just do stupid things.
There's just an endless supply of the things that people
do and most of the time and lands them where
they don't want to land. Sorry. That's another rousing edition
of what kind of brand New fool You, which now
(02:06:02):
allows us to seguey and our second favorite bit, which
we refer to as what my name? All right? I
recently became the only Japanese born Major League Baseball player
to hit two hundred and fifty home runs Mark Ramsey,
What my name? Here's a clue. He plays for a
team near very near you?
Speaker 10 (02:06:26):
Is it.
Speaker 13 (02:06:30):
Now?
Speaker 8 (02:06:31):
Kobyashi?
Speaker 13 (02:06:33):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (02:06:33):
What's the guys?
Speaker 2 (02:06:34):
He's the hot dog guy. Kobyashi is the hot dog Guyani.
It is, in fact Shoheotani. He is two hundred and
fifty home run Saturday night, which is an incredible accomplishment.
Feels like he's on his way to five hundred home
runs and certainly the Hall of Fame a little bit later,
I'm gonna talk about he may be back on the
mound sooner than people realize, you'd, because well, how many
(02:06:55):
home runs it Intro hit. It troll only hit one
hundred and seventeen. He could have hit more. I chose
to hit for average. So that's that's the way that rolled,
all right. We've talked a lot about Rogers and his
former team, the Jets. The last time the Jets won
a playoff game, I was there starting quarterback Brianna What
my name? And by the way, he's very much a
(02:07:18):
fixture on Colin Coward Show during football season. Mark chanchiz
Usc also went to Mission Vehicle High School. Does a
really good job, and he also does one NFL game
per week as a color commentator. Really doesn't an excellent job,
all right. I have led the NFL in sacks cumulatively
(02:07:43):
the last five seasons. Mark Ramsey, what my name? Here's
a clue. I play for an AFC team, and I
have a brother who is quite the sack guy as well,
who just retired a couple of years ago and is
now also in the media. What my name.
Speaker 1 (02:08:01):
Is it from the family of what JT or got JG?
Speaker 2 (02:08:04):
You got it right close enough? TJ. Watt is the
NFL zach leader in the last five years cumulatively, and
his brother, of course, was JJ Watt from Wisconsin. Had
quite an NFL career himself, mostly with Houston all right,
let's talk about NBA playoffs. During the twenty twenty five
(02:08:29):
NBA playoffs, I am the player who averaged more fourth
quarter points cremulatively in the twenty twenty five playoffs than
any other player. Brianna, what my name? Here's the clue.
My team has been eliminated, been eliminated in the conference finals,
(02:08:52):
the Eastern Conference or the Eastern Conference finals. And here's
another clue. My coach just got fired.
Speaker 15 (02:08:59):
Okay, I'm gonna say Jalen Brunson.
Speaker 2 (02:09:04):
Jalen Brunson the average eight point two points a quarter
a cumulatively in all the playoff games this year. That's
quite an accomplishment. All right, let's go back to football.
Speaker 11 (02:09:16):
Never heard of them.
Speaker 2 (02:09:20):
I am the first black quarterback to make the Hall
of Fame. Now, Mark, I've mentioned this gentleman earlier in
the show. He did quite well. At forty one years
old through twenty five touchdown passes. Played mostly with the
Houston Oilers. Started in Canada, but also played with Seattle
Seahawks and even ended up in Kansas City. First black
(02:09:42):
quarterback to make the Hall of Fame, Mark Ramsey, what my.
Speaker 3 (02:09:44):
Name of the powder Blue with the oil rig Warren.
Speaker 2 (02:09:50):
Moon nicely done the powdery powder blue, love you Blue,
all right, last one, let's go back to the NBA. I,
even though I've retired recently won more basketball games. Is
(02:10:13):
an NBA head coach than any other NBA head coach
in history? Brianna what my name?
Speaker 15 (02:10:21):
Recently retire very poor health.
Speaker 2 (02:10:29):
Yea for four Uh he did win five championships. But
he's still he's still kind of knocking around. All right,
great job, what my name? And what kind of brand
new fool of you? Another edition is now in the books.
So now listen, I've been I've been talking about this
for a while here that I would I would certainly
(02:10:50):
uh address this. Uh shoho tani. I believe he will
be back in the Dodgers rotation in July. I think
it's less likely he's in before the All Star break.
Very likely he's in right after the All Star break.
And you ask me why well, as well as the
(02:11:12):
Dodgers have done this year, and this was an issue
last year if you look at their cumulative starting pitching statistics. Okay,
now this is as of I think Thursday, by the way,
before I dive into this huge, huge tip of the cap,
to Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw now has a record of one
(02:11:36):
hundred and fifty four and three. Now he has thirty
two no decisions, and then those thirty two no decisions
they're twenty two to ten, but a cumulative record of
one hundred and fifty four and three. When he pitches
and the Dodgers score four more runs, you talk about
rock solid. Saturday Night seven shotout innings, only allowed three hits,
(02:11:56):
one walk, struck O five and is now only twelves
away for becoming only the fourth left handed pitcher in
Major League Baseball with three thousand career strikeouts. But I
digress because if you look at the Dodgers starting pitcher
pitching staff as a whole, and they're cumulative statistics, they
(02:12:18):
have pitched cumulatively three hundred and seventeen innings, Well that's
not great. That ranks twenty eight the monk all Major
League Baseball teams, so they're not getting a lot of
deep quality starts. The cumulative era for Dodger starting pitchers
is in fact four point three to two, that ranks
twenty third. Three hundred and nine strikeoutsu cumulatively, that only
(02:12:44):
ranks twentieth. Quality starts only a total of eighteen and we're,
you know what, fifty five games into the season where
at times for twenty fifth and home runs allowed, the
Dodger starting pitching staff as a Thursday have allowed forty
nine home runs. So when you look at the fact
(02:13:06):
that in five key key categories innings, pitch e strikeouts,
quality starts, and all runs allowed, the Dodgers rang in
the bottom ten and all of them and the bottom
two in a couple, the Dodgers really can't can't wait.
I'm sure to get Choheotani back on their rotation. And
this is not just smoking the wind. They've been working
(02:13:28):
at this a while. Just last week on Tuesday, while
the Dodgers were on the road at Petco Park, Otani
pitched three simulated innings. He threw a total of forty
four pitches and from people who were there, he looked
out standing, okay, And obviously, you know, the Dodgers brought
(02:13:53):
him in under the guys of being a two way player.
He was a phenomenal two way player. And you know,
the Dodgers havel pitching. But they are getting hurt, they're
not performing well. They're doing well enough to you know,
be right there in a pennant race, et cetera, and
Rogers or Dave Roberts said, basically, anything showed show hey
(02:14:16):
can give us is going to be an addition, a
good addition. It doesn't have to be the full build up.
Speaker 6 (02:14:21):
Now.
Speaker 2 (02:14:22):
Doctor Neil Trash performed the second repair of his honor
collateral loman ligament back in September twenty twenty three. He said,
the Dodgers, you know, their their staff, they're out their
athletic staff, their training staff. They're going to continue to
They're going to set the pace of his recovery. Okay,
they were a little just accordingly. As a matter of fact,
(02:14:43):
I said, he had his pitching session on Tuesday. It
was supposed to be a Monday, but he filed the
ball off his foot in Saint Louis last Sunday, so
they decided to delay it. So we know, I mean, look,
discretion is a better part of valor.
Speaker 13 (02:15:00):
You have to.
Speaker 2 (02:15:02):
Time this right. But his pitchy progression actually started last year. Okay,
they've been working on this a while, and for the
first time on May twenty fifth, when the Dodgers are
on on the road in New York, that city Field
Otani face hitters for the first time. He threw twenty
(02:15:23):
two pitches. Six days later he threw twenty nine. Then
ten days after that, which is last Tuesday, he increased
his output to forty four. He struck out six batters,
only walked one. A lot of ground ball up the middle.
It would have probably been a single, but Otani went
through a lot of game specific elements, like pitching from
the stretch, working on a slidestep, using the pitch clock,
(02:15:43):
and everybody said his fastball had life, his sweeper was
really good. And here's a guy who clearly is needed, wanted,
and don't be so sure that he's not back even
before the All Star break. In the meantime, I mean,
it's worth noting again Clayton kershaw Man. And yeah, he
(02:16:07):
hasn't been available all year. What an effort. Saturday Night
Dodgers scored four more runs in his career's one fifty
four and three seven shootout innings, three hits, one walk,
five k's only twelve k's away from being the fourth player,
fourth lefty pitcher with a three thousand career strikeouts. And
you know, if Clayton kershaw can stay healthy and take
(02:16:31):
the ball every fifth day. But we know he's playing
the He's not only playing the back night. He's putting
out you know, near the eighteenth toal. He's been around
what eighteen nineteen years now, So look, it's not a
zero that Otani pitches before before the All Star break,
but I think it'll probably be slightly after. But let's
(02:16:51):
face it. In a recent player poll, right which player
did the players most likely want to watch Otani? One
hundred and thirty five respondents. A Tony got the vast majority,
got thirty votes, Bobby Whitt only got fourteen, and in
the player poll says, how can you honestly pick someone else?
It's almost it's so hard to get him out what
(02:17:12):
he does. I don't know if he'll ever see it again.
Show he'll be able to do both doesn't make any sense.
He's a cheat code. He's the best my player you
could ever create. You're watching someone have that kind of
success on both sides of the ball. It's so rare.
Players are blown. You know, baseball players are baseball fans too.
They love the game. You have to to have pursued
that for a living, and you have to to do it.
(02:17:35):
One hundred and sixty two days a year, one hundred
and sixty two games a year. The bottom line is
Otani's not worldly and as soon as the Dodgers getting back,
that's just going to be incredible. By the way, coming
up again of the show, what's interesting is as part
of this player pole, they were asked what hitter would
(02:17:55):
you least want to pitch against in Game seven of
the World Series, and somehow someway it was not show Hey,
o Tani. Well, Tani got a lot of oats. You know,
he'sa tell he's people. Some people think he's the best
enter in baseball. I don't know if a guy who's
you know, when the moment is more needed, Otani comes through.
(02:18:18):
But there you have it. We'll reveal that coming up
at the end of the show. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We
are comedy live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Keep it locked right here. He listened to the Bernie
Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

to preset Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app
and it will always pop up on your screen. All right,
So I mentioned a second ago that there was anonymous
player poll what hitter would you least want to pitch
against in Game seven of the World Series? Well before
(02:19:26):
I set this up. So there were only nine players
who got votes, but believe it or not, three of
them were Dodgers. Joey Otani was one, Mookie Betts was one,
and Freddie Freeman was one. Not bad for a team
that has designs I'm repeating as World champions. But believe
it or not, guess who the pitchers in this responded
(02:19:50):
poll in this anonymous poll said they would least like
to pitch against in Game seven of the World Series.
It wasn't Bryce Harper, It wasn't Bobby Witt. It wasn't
Mookie Betts or Freddy it wasn't even Aaron Judge, and
it wasn't shoey Otani. He was actually Juan Sodo. Juan Sodo, Well,
(02:20:13):
he is the highest paid player in baseball. But one
NL pitcher said, quote, he doesn't swing in a lot
of crap, not a lot of swing and miss in
his game, and he can do damage. Well, that says
a lot. When a pitcher can't get you to chase
and swing at what he wants you to swing at.
That's called plate discipline. And well Sodo does have that.
He's patient, he'll take a walk, and when he swings
(02:20:36):
there is not a lot of swings and missus. He's
he's actually got the reputation of being very disciplined. He
doesn't need anything soft. He scores up the bat, he
puts the barrel on it, and in high levelged situations,
he's looking for that pitch and pitchers have to make
a perfect pitch. You've got to have plate discipline and
power and not swing and miss. That's what meant. That's
(02:20:57):
a picture's nightmare. There are many guys the power to
hit like that, but don't swing and miss a lot.
He buries mistakes. That's why wan Sota was paid what
he was paid. He doesn't chase. So for me, I
don't know. I've seen a Tany do just too much
and he's already won a World Series. I don't think
I'd want to face you the one. But Otany would
get my vote, but they didn't give me a vote.
(02:21:20):
All right. We covered all on the show, including the
sports felled fut Bo l is that time, Chris Profet's.
Speaker 16 (02:21:27):
World of Soccer, the Greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the
international drama.
Speaker 1 (02:21:45):
It's all here in this report from the World of.
Speaker 17 (02:21:49):
Soccer, Bertie. We have the Club World Cup going on
right now. We talked about it a little bit last week.
It has since kind of come under the microscope in
the soccer community in media one way or another on
how it has stretched the calendar, how it bumps up
again against the international stuff that it's on, these denying
the rest that usually goes to odd years or for
(02:22:11):
odd years to play with their international teams. I have
problems with how inter Miami was just randomly chosen, and
how FIFA has a lot of this entire thing together,
and how it's trying to stack their deck. I'm also
very sympathetic to the view of people like Gabrielle Marcatti
who do say stuff like, yeah, this is kind of
what we wanted. That, like, we've wanted more than just
(02:22:33):
UEFA teams, you know, hogging the entire spotlight. But I'm
going to put that all to the side because Team
USA is a disaster. It is a diaper fire right now.
Once again, this team, in spite of a new coach,
in spite of turning over a new leaf across the
entire federation, once again finds itself a hissy fit between
(02:22:55):
all of its power brokers, between parents of players, between
old players, and quite honestly everyone else. Right now, in
the Mauricio Pochettino era, they have started zero to four.
They have not won a single mumbling game between the
two friendlies they played so far and the two CONCAFF
Nation leagues that they had earlier. On on Sunday, they
(02:23:18):
will play Trinidad and Tobago, and I wish I could
say if they lose that one, there will be hell
to pay, but I'm not sure who even pays that
hell at this point, and there's a lot of people
who could say, well, you know, it doesn't really matter.
The US is already pre qualified for the World Cup.
It's a year away, Okay, sure, yeah, but you don't
have a ton of time to really play together as
a team, and you're going to like perform like this.
(02:23:40):
You're giving up four goals to Switzerland, who is an
AWAYFA team, but they're not that great, that kind of
awaya team. You take a one goal lead very early
against Turkey and then you sit on your haunches and
let them batter you around like I'm sorry. You don't
get the benefit of the doubt because we've seen this
version of Team USA play in the World Cup before
(02:24:00):
and it was embarrassing. This can't just beat Chapter two
is just we'll figure it out. You're not good enough
to just figure it out. You're just not. You're just
absolutely not. You can't just say it doesn't matter until
twenty twenty six. It's dismissive of the work that goes
in and it's dismissive of the problems. And then we
will then hit the World Cup in America and everyone
(02:24:22):
will put on those what's the meme shocked Pikachu face
when this team starts getting drubbed five goals every match,
or you see a Pochettino says he can't control when
Christian Pulisitch, you know, is there and he can't you know,
dictate which games he plays, And that's kind of true.
But at the same time, this is a unique problem
to America in that i've you know, usually we get
(02:24:44):
people are jumping out of their skins to play for
their country in FIFA Soccer, and Pulisitch isn't here. And
I understand he's played a very long season, and he's
played two seasons of like fifty matches for Milan, But
so I have a lot of guys who are turning
around and and just going and going straight to their
(02:25:06):
countries and some of them going straight back from there
to the Club World Cup here. Like, I understand, it's
a long season, it's exacerbating and it's exhausting, but look
at what you're Christian Fuels such is nicknamed Captain America
by the media and fans, and he's not playing for America.
(02:25:27):
Your brand's really kind of like, what what are you doing?
And here we are back again with dads with the
dad of Christian fuel. Shit's weighing in just like we
had drama with Giovanni Reina not long ago.
Speaker 1 (02:25:38):
And it's a fight with with the the.
Speaker 17 (02:25:41):
The veterans of Team USA, with Landon Donovan, with Clinton Dempsey,
with these guys who are rightly in my book, laying
into Team USA.
Speaker 1 (02:25:50):
For how they are performing right now. Let me tell
you something.
Speaker 17 (02:25:54):
Dempsey, Donovan, Tim Howard all played long seasons too, and
they came out there and they scrapped harder than a
lot of these guys have ever done so far. And
you know what, they were more successful so far than
this generation of Team USA. They are allowed to speak
their mind on it, and I don't need to hear
from pulist. It's just dad who wants to throw barbs
(02:26:14):
at Landon Donovan. Donovan's played, you haven't. You're just resting
on what your kids doing.
Speaker 1 (02:26:19):
I can get.
Speaker 17 (02:26:19):
It's never fun when the old timers are bashing the
team right now. But that's also the culture of international soccer,
and you have to live up to the example they've done.
They've won games in World Cups, and I bring them
up a lot when I talk in the world of
soccer about Team USA, because I admire those teams because
they might not have been talented or touted the way
that this Team USA was, but they had heart, they
(02:26:41):
had fight, They were never out of it. They never
rolled over like they did. This Team USA goes out,
tries to score in the first twenty minutes and then
just plays dead and it's embarrassing to watch. I don't
care that they're already qualified for the World Cup. Maybe
they shouldn't be. Maybe that would give them a reason
to fight. Maybe this is all academic by twenty twenty six,
but in my gut, it's not. And they have a
(02:27:02):
lot of soul searching to do before this all comes up.
And I really really do not need to hear from
people about how this doesn't really matter because it's not
the World Cup.
Speaker 1 (02:27:11):
It'll matter.
Speaker 17 (02:27:12):
Team USA's makeup of relying on MLS guys and guys
like Christian Kulisich who are struggling to find time to
play for America and struggling to get you know, on
the same page and playing as a team is already
biting the US and the ass. You want to get
that off your back right now. Go out in the
CONCACAF Gold Cup, even though it doesn't mean anything. Pick
(02:27:34):
up another trophy for your case and show the world
that you've got that dog in you. That'll do it
for us on the World of Soccer, Bernie, We'll see
you next time, so believe.
Speaker 13 (02:27:44):
It or not.
Speaker 2 (02:27:45):
Well, the future always says a way of arriving ahead
of schedule. We are three hundred and what sixty days,
three six zero from World Cup twenty twenty six, which
would be the biggest World Cup ever. It'll be played
a lot of the games right here in the Unite.
It's also Mexico and Canada. The US men's team has qualified.
(02:28:05):
They will take the field at Sofi Stadium in Englewood
for a first group stage game. And I don't know,
there's no expectations for this team. By the way, you
know where a host country. That's why they're in. But
they're actually allowing forty eight teams to participate from the
previous thirty two to be a total of one hundred
(02:28:27):
and four games played over between June eleventh and July nineteenth.
So our world, our World of Soccer feature basically started
and after in the twenty twenty one World Cup that
was played in the fall, started to actually twenty twenty two.
Excuse me, got delaid because of COVID, and the first
(02:28:51):
game was the pipe button the build up against England
on Friday after Thanksgiving and it was a major letdown.
And unfortunately this continues to be underwhelming. So the frustration
in his voice is for good reason. You just wonder,
will there'll ever be a day? I don't I don't know,
(02:29:12):
I don't know, but we'll be watching. It'll be a
hell of an event right here in the United States.
World Cup is a big, big, big, big damn deal.
Coming up, we wrap up the show. What happens to
the WNBA when Caitlin Clark doesn't play? And then what
happens when she returns to the floor, Well, what the hell?
(02:29:34):
We'll talk about that coming up. I'm Bernie Frattle. We
are coming to line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Studios. Don't go away or listening to the Bernie
Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, we're wrapping
it up on the Bernie Frattle Show, come to you
live from the Las Vegas Studios. Been with you since
eleven pm Pacific time on Saturday night. We'll be back
(02:29:56):
in this chair next Saturday night, June twenty first, at
eleven pm. Pacific time on Saturday. For any further one
of the thing. My broadcast team, Mark and Brianna turning,
all the Donalds keeping a slude together, managing on the
calls at time clock. Appreciate all the efforts tonight as always.
I'll get to the Caitlin Clark thing in a second.
(02:30:18):
The next, by the way, are going to actually be
able to interview to legitimate candidates Former Grizzlies coach Taylor
Jenkins and former Sacramento King's coach Mike Brown decent quality guys.
I just don't know how enthusiastic the next feel about that.
They just got done going through the phone book A
through Ze I believe had really serious interest in Jason Kidd,
(02:30:42):
but that got Ky boshed as well as Houston's email
A Doka, Minnesota's Chris Finch, Atlantas Quinn Snyder, Chicago's Billy Donovan.
Why would you only call teams that have had I mean,
Chicago might be on the uptick Atlanta. You saw where
Minnesota is the knocking on the door. He used to
improve tremendously with Imyodoka, who did pretty well in Boston.
(02:31:06):
Before you know, some situations hit the fan and then
Jason Kidd in Dallas. What the hell? What's the thinking?
You only reach out to teams that have a coach
that's currently employed and they're doing pretty well. Oh, I
didn't even mention they they you know, thought about Jay Wright.
(02:31:28):
I knew he wasn't interested. And Mike Malone, I think
would just be in another Tom Thibodeau.
Speaker 6 (02:31:33):
And so it did.
Speaker 2 (02:31:34):
You know, all right, let's see what happens. It's really
good for basketball, and the Knicks are good and they
were and I don't know if that's going to continue.
All right, So what happens when Kaitlyn Clark doesn't play well?
The NBA ratings dropped like an anvila and a bugs
Bunny cartoon. Caitlyn Clark was out starting May twenty fourth,
(02:31:57):
and before Saturday, the nationally teles games were down fifty
five percent in viewership per USA Today. The Fevers. Now
that's all nationally televised games. The fevers. Nationally televised games
were down fifty three percent without Clark. They were getting
about eight hundred thousand viewers a game with Clark about
(02:32:19):
a million eight and Clark missed five games for the fever.
She'd previously played at one hundred and eighty three straight
regular season and postseason games across four years of IOWA
and all forty regular season games in two playoff games
last year with the fever, she alled take a team
that had made the playoffs after the playoffs. But in
four games this year before injury, she was drawing fans
(02:32:41):
and nineteen points a game, nine assists, six rebounds, and
they were two and three without Clark the fever And
I'll get to what they did Saturday against the New
York Liberty, but the reality of it is the NBA. Oh,
by the way, there were actually two NBA TV games
that were televised. Clark and drew three hundred and forty
(02:33:03):
thousand viewers. That's down about forty five percent from the
Fevered Dream game that was played on NBA TV May
twentieth that had almost six hundred thousand viewers. Sunday's game
against the Sky last week was down about eight hundred
thousand viewers. That was supposed to be the another rematch
between Angel Rees and Caitlin Clark on top of their
(02:33:23):
opening night of the year. So what happened. Clark returns
to the floor against the nine to zero undefeated New
York Liberty, and she proceeds to make history. Caitlin Clark. Now,
(02:33:46):
it was a home game at Gamebridge Arena in Indianapolis,
in the same place where the NBA game is played
Friday night. And you know, one of the things Caitlin
Clark does is elevate everybody around her. There's no about it.
All of a sudden, she gets back on the floor
after missing twenty two days. She cracks the one hundred
point mark for the first time this season. Not not
(02:34:08):
she that Indiana fever? Did you know?
Speaker 11 (02:34:13):
This was?
Speaker 2 (02:34:14):
You know, a baffel return all right? Thirty two points,
seven main, three pointers, eight rebounds, nine assists. They beat
the undefeated, defending champion New York Liberty by fourteen one
two to eighty eight. And there was a sequence where
in the first quarter Clark not only had three straight
three pointers, she did it in thirty nine seconds, nine
(02:34:37):
points in thirty nine seconds, continuing to turn heads. But
and I wonder is Gino Oriema at all ever issued
any kind of retraction for what he said last year,
because Clark did it again. Her performance Saturday not only
was one for the ages, one for the record books,
(02:34:57):
but it elevated her too, a you know, in a conversation,
let's put it this way, to a Hall of famer
as Caitlyn Clark passed this person now with the most
thirty five to five games, that's thirty points, five assists,
five rebounds, and the player's first two seasons she always
(02:35:18):
had She's already had three. She passed Candace Parker, who's
a two time MVP, seven time All Star, one of
the most decorated athletes in WNBA history. She recorded two
games with thirty points five rebounds of five was just
during her first two seasons with the LA Sparks. That
was sixteen years ago. Caitlyn Clark does it now. What
(02:35:40):
in her fifth game of the twenty twenty five season,
in her fifth game in her second season and in
two full seasons cannas Parker thirty points, five assists, five
rebounds twice. Kaitlin Clark's done it twice now and she
do it again before the season's out. Moreover, I'm wondering now,
(02:36:04):
if Indiana, the Indiana Fever are in fact a championship caliber,
will they make a run with this another five hundred?
With the win, they sit in third the Eastern Conference.
But now they have Clark and another player they were
anticipating to get back as well. Can't leave that out. Cunningham,
her first name escapes me. I'll think of it in
a second, but the bottom line is it was kind
(02:36:28):
of a big day in Indiana and Clark wasted no time, right,
Sophie Cunningham is her name, the teammate of Caitlyn Clark.
So she comes back thirty two points. Indiana's back in
the mix.
Speaker 7 (02:36:42):
And.
Speaker 2 (02:36:43):
It was just it's to the point now where the
Fever coach Stephanie White told ESPN after the game, don't
we just expect this kind of game from Caitlin Clark?
And I'll never forget how people bashed the first five
games her WNBA career. She never should have been the
first overall pick all those things. You know, vision's history. Now,
(02:37:08):
hopefully the quad strain is healed, because look, the Indiana
Fever nater and I mean it, the WNBA needser This
is a league that you know, we talked about it earlier.
They have been around twenty five years, twenty six years.
They've never made any money. I do think the caliber
of play is good and they play an interesting pure
(02:37:32):
form of the game. But again, I think they really,
they really, they really suffer from what I call the
Canadian Football League syndrome. It's a theory I came up
with years ago, and that is, you can watch a
Canadian Football League game being played, she really can't tell
me who the hell's playing. I mean, well, okay, the
rough Riders are playing the rough Riders, and the next
week they're playing the rough Riders, right and not dogging them.
(02:37:55):
It's just the way it is. You can't name who
the players are. We don't know any rivalries. There is
no Pittsburgh versus Baltimore. There is no Green Bay versus Chicago, right,
you get the picture. There's no Lions, Lions, Vikings, Bears,
all that you know, right on down the line. And
you don't know who the individual players are except for
a very few so until that gets fixed. But in
(02:38:15):
the meantime, you have Caitlin Clark. Now next week, by
the way, a couple of things, Cam Newton and Robert
Griffin headline the College Football Hall of Fame class. I
talk about some of that, but well, we might be
heading into a game seven NBA Finals, among many other things.
It's gonna do it for the Bernie Frattle Show. See
you next week. Meantime, keep it locked up next to
the great Andy Furman on Fox Sports Radio.
