Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports. Good morning everybody. I'm your host,
Jason McIntyre coming to you live from the Geico Fox
Sports Radio studios. Fifteen minutes could save you fift or
more on car insurance. Visit Geico dot com for a
free rate. Quote. Another World Cup beat down in the books.
(00:25):
Belgium just slaughtered Tunisia. Listen. I don't know where you
guys are on this early morning soccer. I'm absolutely loving it,
especially Monday through Friday. We're not gonna do a lot
of World Cup soccer today on the show. Unfortunately, I
will wedge it in when I can because there's a
lot of other stuff going on in the sports world. Listen, Um,
(00:48):
when an NFL team's season is nuked in June because
the quarterbacks toast, I think that's a massive story. We
will dive deep into that one here in short order. Um,
But it's a gloomy morning in l A weather wise.
You know, I'm driving into the studio, oh drizzle, which
(01:08):
is a bit of a surprise. And that's unfortunate because uh,
my son's basketball team, which I'm coaching, has we have
our summer league debut this afternoon, and yes, I'm nervous
about that, more nervous about coaching that game than this
show because there's so much content for the show. And um,
even though it is a gloomy morning out here in
l A, I will say the sun is gonna be
(01:31):
coming out from behind the clouds soon because listen, l
A is on fire right now. People talking Lakers. They're
gonna get Lebron. It's happening. Your boy was on point
eleven months ago when I talked about that. The Clippers, Hey,
things are looking up. Things are shockingly looking up for
the Clippers. Jerry West pulling the strings. You've got two
(01:52):
super Bowl contenders in the Rams, yes, I said Super
Bowl and Chargers and the Charges, you know, and they're
my deep sleeper. And of course there's a new soccer
team out here in l A. The Dodgers just went
to the World Series. There there's rebounding after a slow
start and everything's coming up roses for l A. But
(02:12):
what's funny is one of the best franchises, not just
in the NBA but in all of sports, really has
fallen on hard times. And of course I'm talking about
the San Antonio Spurs, and they're just absolutely embarrassing mishandling
of the Kawahi Leonard situation. You know, I believe that
(02:35):
arrogance is going to cost the Spurs. Kawai Leonard. Do
you realize how arrogant this franchise is being right now?
They could have dealt Kauai this week, right before the
NBA Draft. There were options. They just they're so arrogant
because because of the success they've had over the last
two decades. When you have all the successful championships, when
(02:57):
you are able to unearth gems in the draft, AFT
late second round pick Manu Ginobli. I mean the dudes
going to the Hall of Fame. They got a fifty
seven overall. They just slaughter the draft late first round,
whethers Tony Parker, Leandro Barbosa, Dejonta Murray. When you are
so good at what you do, it breeds arrogance. And
(03:20):
right now that's San Antonio Spurs arrogance. Oh boy, what
a turn off to Kawhi Leonard. So I want to
back up here before I backed the Brinks truck over
Gregg Popovitch and the Spurs, and I heard a great line. Um.
I don't know what was from a movie, but it
was definitely in his book. I'm reading Behind Every Great
Fortune He's a great crime. The San Antonio Spurs have
(03:47):
had so much fortune over the last two decades. And
everybody loves Greg Popovitch for his his surly uh you know,
halftime interviews with sideline reporters. Everybody loves that he gets
political and he's passionate about that. Nicely played, I was sam,
(04:07):
But Behind Every Great Fortune is a great crime. And
does anybody remember how Gregg Popovitch got the job as
San Antonio's first head coach. I've I've dipped into this before,
and I know a lot of people are gonna be
angry at me on the river Walk. No, I'm not
gonna be going to San Antonio anytime soon. An old
friend of mine, she's not my friend anymore, not by
(04:28):
by choice. But Michelle Beatle over at our rival network,
she's a big Spurs fans. She won't like this, but
this is real talk. This is really what happened. So
Gregg Popovitch in the early nineties was with the Spurs.
Then they the owner dust everybody blows about. Popovich is
able to come back with the second owner in and
(04:51):
he's the GM and uh president a VP of basketball operations. Right,
So Popovich is in the front office. Nineteen David Robinson,
you guys know him, the Admiral Gosh. I love David Robinson,
class act, outstanding human being, great basketball player. He gets
hurt early in the season. Now remember that the tag
(05:15):
here is behind every great fortune is a great crime.
So David Robinson's hurt. Sean Elliott, who was maybe their
second best player at the time, he gets hurt. So
what does Greg Popovitch do? He says, Oh, I'm in
the front office. You know what, I'm gonna fire our
coach and I'm going to be the head coach. Why
(05:35):
why would he do that? Well, ladies and gentlemen, there
was a certain sure fire number one pick waiting in
the wings the following year. His name was Tim Duncan.
Greg Popovich commences an epic tank job. So he leaves
the front office, says, I'm I'm gonna fire the coach
and I'm gonna be the coach. And David Robinson's hurch,
(05:57):
Sean Elliots hurt, everybody gets hurt, and they tank their
way to the number one pick. Greg Popovich, a crafty GM,
now has David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Behind every great
fortune is a great crime. Nobody talks about how Papovitch
pulled this off. Firing a coach, tanking and then getting
Tim Duncan. That set them up for two decades of success.
(06:20):
Can you imagine that right now, guys, Laker fans think
about this. So that would be like, I'm just tossing
this out there, Jerry West saying, Oh, we're gonna go
ahead and tank next season. Then I'm gonna fire the coach.
I'm gonna be the coach, and we're gonna draft this
hotshot kid out of Canada. I know you don't know
(06:41):
his name yet, but you will soon enough. R J. Barrett,
a kid go in a duke. Jerry West would be
slaughtered in the media for this great Popovich skate. Nobody
takes any shots at him for it. So what happens
after Popovitch lands dunk in, Well, you know, they go
on to win five titles in six trips. Tim Duncan
even one of the finals all time. Great Craig Popovitch
(07:03):
bulletproof and listen, it was a stroke of genius. It
certainly was an outstanding move by Popovich, but that's the
that was the beginnings of the arrogance. And I'm telling you,
when you win these five titles, when the San Antonio
Spurs draft so well, they're so good at their job,
(07:24):
all of a sudden, wait, let me add this. I
have this in my notes here. Even guys that they
drafted that didn't pan out with them ended up getting paid.
This is how good the Spurs front office is. You
guys probably remember John Salmons, not a great player, he
got paid. Remember Ion MAHEMI stiff he got paid. I'm
(07:44):
telling the Spurs are so good at their jobs that
it has bred arrogance. Don't let this happen to you
in life. People. So now, last summer, LaMarcus Aldridge, he's
not really feeling san Antonio. What does he say, I
want out of here? Now? He doesn't the Kawhi Leonard
route and say forget this, I'm going public. He just
(08:05):
privately says I would like to be traded, thank you.
But the arrogance of the San Antonio Spurs, Oh, we're
not trading you. Come on, and Popovitch talked LaMarcus Aldrogen disdaining.
He convinced him, dude, I'm telling you this, San Antonio Spurs.
They're good at their jobs. Gregg Popovitch is a closer,
(08:26):
and now he's running into the one obstacle he can't
beat because I'm telling you, folks, straight up, Papovich is
not going to be beating Kawhi Leonard in this His
mind is made up some of the chatter coming out
of that meeting last week in San Diego. Kawhi Leonard,
you don't want to say. I don't care what. Popovitch
(08:46):
goes into that meeting and says, Kawhi Leonard has made
up his mind. I'm done. You guys did me dirty.
This is how arrogant the Spurs were. They had. Popovitch
is longtime guys Manu and Park are go and rip
Kawhi Leonard thinking that's gonna change his mind and you know,
maybe rush back. Are you kidding me? So? You know
(09:07):
I'm telling you this is this is how it's gonna unfold.
The Spurs believe that when musical Chairs begins, Lebron comes
to the Lakers, Paul George goes to the Lakers, Chris
Paul stays in Houston. There's no chairs for him to
go sit down at. Where's Kawhi Leonard gonna go, and
the Spurs because of their arrogance, I think they're gonna
(09:29):
be able to keep Kawhi Leonard and you know what,
maybe they come back in with the Superbacks. Maybe they say, Kawaii,
hey play for us this year. Man. They're not gonna
trade Kawhi Leonard. I don't see him getting dealt now.
I thought there was a chance. We had Bill Plashka
the l a times on last week. I've believed there
was a chance before the draft if somehow you could
get the picks together. Heck, it even looked like the
(09:52):
Lakers we're putting something together. And when they added a
second round pick, getting all this m o to to
trade for Kauai. But I'm telling in you this arrogance
of the Spurs, they're not going to deal him. I
don't see Kawhi Leonard on the move this summer. I
think they hold on to him. Think we could convince
him there's nowhere for him to go. Lakers use their
cat money. I'm telling you They're gonna lose Kawai Leonard
(10:14):
and get nothing in return. That's the arrogance of the
San Antonio Spurs. Now, I'm not saying this should roll
over and instantly trade him for a couple of pennies
on the dollar. There's a guy whose top five m
v P candidate best two way player in the league
two years ago. This guy's a superstar, Kawai Leonard is,
but the arrogance of the San Antonio Spurs is gonna
(10:36):
drive him right out of town. They're gonna lose him
for nothing. Can you imagine that? I can't think of
the last big time superstar who was lost for absolutely nothing.
I mean, Paul George not a huge big time superstar.
I like him a lot more than other people. You know,
the Pacers got good return for him. I guess you'd
(10:57):
have to go back two was it to two or
three years ago? When Kevin Durant decided, okay see PC later,
I'm out now. Durant's departure to clear up cap rooms.
So they were able to get some guys, but nobody
of consequence. But the San Antonio Spurs, a model of
(11:18):
you know, perfection for the last two decades in the NBA.
Arrogance is catching up with them and they're not. They
have no intentions of trading Kawhile Leonard. They're gonna be
up in February of that trade deadline. Oh, it's gonna
get ugly, Greg Popovitz, just remember behind every great fortune,
it's a great crime. We got a great show today, folks,
and listen, we haven't talked to NBA on the show
(11:40):
for a couple of weeks. I'm sorry, NFL on the
show for a couple of weeks because the NBA has
been so hot. But coming up next, Listen, the season
is over before it even started for one NFC team.
When you lose your quarterback, say good night. I'll tell
you all about it next, all right, Sam, the annual
Guess the song is that Beastie Boys thank you Goodness?
(12:04):
Great about time. I gotta say, I don't know this
Beastie Boys song, but I could definitely they have a
distinctive um quality to their music that you know they've
been around for a minute too. Indeed, Yeah, you can
definitely tell us them um back here on the Big
Lead Fox Sports Radio. I just saw Jurassic World yesterday
(12:29):
and Rob you saw it as well, right, I thought
Jurassic World was phenomenal. I just want to get that
plug in. Uh. But one of my but my son's
friends had a birthday party. So me and dad took
like five or six kids to see Jurassic World. And
I'll say this, if you've got a kid under the
age of eight, it is scary. There are several moments
(12:50):
where I looked over at the kids and they were
all kind of half covering their eyes and like turning around,
like it is just awesome what they can do in
Hollywood with the dinosaurs and stuff. Now is I mean
the CG eyes off the hook. There's a scene, and
I won't give away spoilers, you know that a volcanoes
erupting on an island. That scene is like ten minutes
of Oh my gosh, that looks real because we just
(13:13):
saw Hawaii get engulfed by a volcano in real life.
And then you look at this, you're like, oh geez,
that's like crazy good and great news. There's a quick
way you could save money. Switch to Geico. Go to
Geico dot com, and in fifteen minutes you could say
fift or more on car insurance. All right, I just
(13:34):
finished eviscerating the San Antonio Spurs for their handling of
Kawhi Leonard. Next up, I guess this is just a
takedown day, right, I mean, I don't know who I
should go after harder here Jameis Winston, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And I will say there is something dirty that the
(13:56):
NFL did, and I'll get to that in a second,
but let me let me hit you with the news
for first, Jamis Winston in the Bucks season is over
close the book. That's a rap. I'm I'm being serious.
Jamis Winston suspended for three games. And I know you
have some strong opinions on Jamis Winston because he hasn't
gotten Tampa to the playoffs. Quick minor defensive Jamis Winston,
(14:19):
and I don't defend this clown for a lot of
the stuff he does, but he's in arguably the best
division in the NFL. All the other three teams in
the NFC South Saints, Panthers, Falcons made the playoffs last year.
Jamis Winston is a good quarterback. He's got a lot
to learn. He's not a top ten probably not a
top fifteen quarterback, but in his division. He has two
(14:42):
NFL m v ps in Mattie Ice and Cam Newton
and a Super Bowl m v P and Drew Brees. Okay,
NFL Hall of Fame is the hardest Hall of Fame
to make. I could make a case right now that
he's a division with three guys who are going to
be in the Hall of Fame. It's not easy to
(15:03):
get to the playoffs that way. So now let me
that being said, their season is over. This is These
are the games Jamis Winston's gonna miss. They open against
in New Orleans against the Saints. Okay, Saints, very good
team last year, only gonna get better. That's a loss.
Their second game is against the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles.
(15:27):
Now they get them at home, which is great. But
but Carson Wentz should be back. Game three verse Pittsburgh
Monday Night Football. That's three division winners to open the season,
and you don't have Jamis Winston. I know you're before
you could google and say, well, who's the backup? Sam?
Do you have any idea who the backup is? Oh?
You do? Okay, I know him well because he's a
(15:50):
former New York Jet. The man filling in for Jamis
Winston for the first three games the next year is
thirty five year old Ryan Fitzpatrick. Yes, Ryan Fitzpatrick. All
Jets fans remember that guy, Well had the best season
of his career, and then in the win and get
(16:11):
in the season finale and Buffalo Fitzpatrick vomited all over
himself in the fourth quarter three interceptions. It's it's a
burn the tape game. Trust me, trust me on this one.
I was on pins and needles on the edge of
my seat watching that embarrassment. And I'll never forget how
bad Fitzpatrick was. He did have the best season of
(16:32):
his career, but when it mattered crunch time, deliver Ryan,
come on, get us to the playoffs, he just vomited
on himself. It was pathetic. Has not rebounded that was
in He has a rebounded from that, So good luck
getting a win Tampa Bay. Now onto the actual matter
(16:52):
is like, wait a sec, what is Jamis Winston suspended for?
Because when I first heard this, I'm like, what did
he get in trouble again? And no, this is actually
from TwixT. Now I'm not going to relitigate the case here,
but I don't like how the NFL suspends him. Everybody says, well,
(17:13):
wait a secon, Wait a secon, what's he getting to
spend it for? And then all of a sudden, now
all these details emerge about Jamis Winston and you're like, oh, okay,
that's bad and that's kind of doing the guy dirty.
Like why not just put that stuff out there when
you get it a long time ago? It's just two
years old. I mean, Jamis Winston's no acquire boy. We
(17:33):
know that. But dude, why are you hanging out with trouble?
So the two dudes Jamis Winston was hanging out with,
one of them is as a current NFL player. Uh,
former FSU guy Derby Derby was involved with Jamis Winston
that night at f S you way back when he
(17:54):
was alleged of sexual assault. Derby was hanging with you then,
and now you're still hanging with the guy. Maybe he's
bad news. Maybe maybe you shouldn't hang with him. I
don't care how long you've known him, because your boy
from childhood. If the dude's doing stupid things, don't hang
with him. Now. I'm not a saying Winston is easily
influenced her. He wasn't involved. He was involved, but I'll
(18:16):
never forget this, and I probably shouldn't reveal this. I
don't think my family's listening, but you know, everybody dabbles
in um extracurricular activity. Uh stuff not that's not alcohol.
And you know, I had one of those nights where
I went to a rave in d C. With a
good buddy of mine, good good buddy, like we were
(18:38):
tight for a long time, and he brings along, you know,
two other people who I kind of knew but I
didn't really know, and they bottom line, we did some
dumb things. Unlet's just say that was the last night
I ever hung out with that guy. You know, when
you when you end up on your doorstep bringing the
doorbell at four am and your parents look at you
like are you all right? It was like, yeah, I'm
(19:00):
not hanging with that guy again. I didn't hang out
with him anymore. Jamis Winston waked the hell up. Dude,
you're only twenty four. You could turn this thing around.
But what's messed up from the Winston case was that
there was a third guy involved and his name never
came out until right after the suspension was announced. The
guy's name, um is Brandon Banks. You probably don't know him,
(19:23):
but he's in prison now. He's doing fifteen years in
prison for aggravated rape and sexual battery. That's who Jamis
Winston was hanging out with two years ago. And it
gets even worse, if that's possible. So they go to
the club. These three dudes, they're leaving the club. They
get into Uber. The other two guys who are you know,
(19:44):
they're not choir boys. They determined that Jamis Winston has
been such he's so unruly and I guess he was hammered.
They kick him out and get him another Uber. Then Winston,
who's a mess, gets in that Uber allegedly you know,
I don't know what he did to the driver, but
(20:04):
there was alleged groping. She did not file a civil
or criminal complaint, but with the me too stuff happening, um,
she just said I'm empowered, I'm gonna announce this and
she did it. So no criminal or civil complaint and
he gets the three game suspension. I mean, listen, Jamis Winston,
the guy's got to clean up his act. This this
(20:26):
is unbecoming of an NFL franchise quarterback. Personally, I think
he can rebound doing what's my confidence level? Not high,
not high at all. Now, Winston did improve a little
bit last year. He had his fewest interceptions, his highest
quarterback rating. However, he only played thirteen games because he
had an injury. Um, we're kind of up against the
(20:50):
break now, so I've got a lot more on Jamis Winston.
And I'm telling you their season is over. And don't say, Jason,
it's only three games. They'll be fine. No, No, I'm
telling you the NFC is loaded beyond belief. I counted
and I'll quickly Talia. There are nine teams in the
(21:11):
NFC that are that are better than the Bucks, Eagles, Cowboys, Vikings,
Ad Kirk Cousins, Packers get Aaron Rodgers back. That's four,
all three teams in the NFC South with the Bucks, Saints, Panthers, Falcons.
So now you're at seven, okay, Jason, come on the
Bucks are No, they're not. The Rams are absolutely loaded.
(21:34):
They wanted eleven and five last year. Barring some massive injuries,
they'll be back in the playoffs. That's eight. And then
Jimmy G and the Niners. Come on. Jimmy G a
better quarterback than Jamis Winston. Factor fiction, Iowa, Sam, that's
a fact. Come on, Is Jimmy G better than Jamis?
I think he will be right now, we don't have
enough comparisons. He did only win five straight to end
(21:56):
the season. But he looks just the way he throws
his mechanics, the way he say squares up his shoulders.
He looks great. And let's not forget Winston's doing dumb
stuff like on the sideline, the eating the w and
he kind of embarrasses himself in interviews. Remember he spoke
to the kids in that school and said some stupid stuff.
What just gotta grow up? Listen, atwenty four, I was
(22:17):
not grown up. I was still a mess, but I
wasn't also getting what I think. His extension was just
picked up and they're gonna pay him twenty million in
his fifth year, so he's not going anywhere. But my gosh,
the Bucks are done. Imagine being a Tampa fan and
you know your seasons over in June. My gosh. Alright,
(22:38):
coming up next year on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio. Listen,
we were pushing this last week. A lot more people
have gotten on board with it. Is LaVar Ball's mouth
gonna get Alonzo traded. Jeff Goodman has the answer coming
up next, but first let's go to Isaac Lowen Crown
for the latest and supports Good Morning Jason Off we
(22:58):
go to the World Cup in Russia, where today Belgium
scored early and often against Tunisia. Here's a chance coming
up where get covers up long JP Della Camera the
call on Foxes. Belgium wanted five to two and by
(23:20):
scoring two goals today, Romelu Lukaku became the first player
with back to back multigoal World Cup games since Diego
Maradonna's legendary performance in the nineteen eighties six World Cup.
Eden Hazard also scored twice for Belgium. Coming up at
the top of the hour on Fox South Korea takes
on Mexico. Hey, great news. There's a quick way you
(23:42):
could save money. Switched to Geico. Go to Geico dot
com and in fifteen minutes you could say fifteen percent
or more on car insurance. Finally, in Major League Baseball
Friday Night, Manny Machados go ahead home run in the
fifteenth thinninglift of the Orioles past the Braves ten seven,
while the Rangers one at Minnesota eight to one. Texas
on a six game winning streak. Jason back to you,
(24:03):
Thank you, Isaac. Back here on the Big Lead. Fox
Sports Radio. I'm your host, Jason McIntyre, coming to you
live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's easy
to say or more on car insurance with Geico, go
to Geico dot comic call one seven Auto. The only
(24:24):
hard part figuring out which way is easier. Alright, folks.
One of my favorite guests in the basketball world joining
the show. Now. I've known him for a while. He
knows college basketball, NBA, high school basketball. He knows LaVar
Ball really well because they were hanging hanging out in Lithuania.
(24:46):
Jeff Goodman, basketball insider and host of the Good and
Plenty podcast. He joins the show Now, good morning, Jeff,
How are you do? We have to admit that I
listen you Actually, Hey, let's just start there with the
Ball family, because we got our shows on out here
in l a and everybody loves a little LaVar Alonzo. Um,
(25:07):
just your loons, your thoughts on you do love Lonzo
a point guard? Oh? Like I love Alonzo Ball, Like
I'll take him on my team anyday. I'll have him,
you know, babysitting my kids, even though my daughters to old.
The babysitting are. Like. I love Alonzo Ball, like he
plays the game the right way. Um, and I like
(25:30):
that he's kind of being more comfortable with himself. Now
we're seeing him in commercials and doing some stuff and
and I think he's growing as a person a lot
more now too, So I'm happy for him. Well, I mean,
he kind of needs to to step out from the
shadow of his father now. Jeff, I don't know if
you saw this, but on Draft night, and this kind
of went under the radar, somebody asked LaVar Ball about
(25:52):
a Lonzo getting traded, and if if you would ask
LaVar that six months ago, he would have flipped out
on you and said some nonsense about how he's going
to the Hall of Fame. Yeah, there was a reaction
from LaVar that was like, hey, man, it's no big deal.
If he gets traded, he gets traded. I'm I got
a knee injury, so I'm literally in a game ready
(26:15):
ice machine and if I could get up, if I
could get up and stop the dog, I would, But
I'm literally on the couch and would have to get
up on two crutches. Hope the dog will down. First
of all, your chances of Alonzo getting traded, and then
has did this Draft night stuff? Humble LaVar, LaVar at all,
because you know, he's talking about the nonsense about Lee
(26:36):
Angelo getting getting drafted or Summer League would happen. I mean, listen,
if if it takes trading Linso to get you know,
a combination of of Lebron Kawai and and Paul George,
then Alonzo's gone. And we know that. And I don't
think LaVar is ever gonna be humbled because I don't
(26:57):
think that's his personality. I don't think he'll admit it
even if he does get humbled. Um, you know, obviously
le Angela was never going to get drafted. There was
zero chance. Listen, there's a minimal chance he even plays
in the G League. He's not good enough. Everybody knew this.
You know, I saw him in Lithuania. He's a good
overseas player. And there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing
(27:21):
wrong with that. So I understanding. You want to build
up your child, right, My my daughter is an actress
and you want to build her up and give her
confidence and everything like that, but you also want to
be realistically. Angelo ball is not Alonzo Paul, and to
me be realistic with the kids. So he understands, um
that it's okay to play, you know, in Lithuania. He's
(27:44):
it's okay to play in Europe. The rest of your career.
You can achieve. You can fight to try to to
do better and get to the NBA. But but be
realistic with the kid too, because I think you're just
setting himself up to fail. And that's not that's not right.
I mean to me that he listened. He pulled his
other son out of u c l A. Sorry, Lo Angelo,
(28:04):
he pulled him out of U c l A, had
a full ride. He could be getting an education and
maybe hey, he could maybe play on U c l
A a little this year and pulled his right. He
would have played, you know, five to ten minutes probably
this year, and by the time he was a junior
or senior, he might have been starting at U c
l A. Get your degree. And but they don't care
(28:25):
about their degrees. They've said it. They don't care about education.
Education doesn't matter. Jamelo right, I asked Lamello at that
point blank twice, I said back in and when I
went out there before before they left for Lithuania, before
I think it was it had to be September, And
I said, what's it like to be homeschooled? Um, at
that point he was going to be homeschool. He said,
(28:47):
it's a it's a dream come true. And then you know,
asked him the value actually at that point asked him
the value of education and uh, and he basically said
it it doesn't matter and he gets it from his dad.
And again, Alonzo, it's gonna be okay, the kids just study.
He's gonna play ten twelve years in the NBA, make
millions and millions of dollars and that's fine. Well, okay,
(29:08):
I would normally agree with that, Jeff, and I like
Alonzo as a player. I think he's gonna have a future.
I will say this, Um, if the Lakers are having
trouble trading Alonzo because his father is, you know, a
bit of a nutcase, and even the Phoenixes and the
Milwaukee's of the world don't want anything to do with him,
I don't know if he does have twelve years in
(29:29):
this league. I'm gonna be honest with He'll play twelve years, Jason,
He'll play twelve years. Again, he's too damn good. He's
too good. And as he gets so, how come nobody's
or nobody's willing to take him? How come nobody wants
to They'll take him. They're just not going to give
you the value right now that that the Lakers look
for him, which is is gonna be extremely high because
(29:50):
he was the number two pick and he is a
guy who you know, and I like the fact that
the Lakers took Moe Wagner. Uh, they gotta put shooters
around him, and then you're going to see the true
value of Alonzo Paul. You've got to put a bunch
of shooters around that kid, and he is special at
what he does. Talk with Jeff Goodman, Basketball Insider hosted
a Good and Plenty podcast. All right, let's get to
the draft. Uh, Jeff, I gotta I gotta say sometimes
(30:12):
like the best thing you know is not what you
think it is. And Michael Porter falling to fourteen, Listen,
there's gonna be no pressure on him there. If he
had gone to Orlando, they would have need to, you know,
wedge him in that lineup opening night. Uh, you know
your thoughts on Michael Porter fault dropping like a rock
in the draft. You know, it's amazing because the days
(30:34):
and even the day of the draft, I was talking
to a bunch of of NBA people and some were saying, hey,
you know they read flagged him. We can't even take them.
Others are saying, you know, we could take him, but
they've kind of told us, listen, you know, we don't
know what you're gonna what you're gonna be able to
get out of him long term, even year one or two,
where is he going to be with the back injury.
(30:55):
And then all this are saying like, no, we're okay.
We were told by our our medical people were okay
to take him. Ultimately, when it came down to it,
this draft was strong enough at the top that teams
were not willing to take a chance on Michael Porter Jr.
And his back injury until a small market team like
Denver said to himself, you know what, our doctors told us.
(31:17):
We could take him. We know the risks, but we're
never going to get a guy like this Otherwise we're
not going to get a free agent of the talent
of Mike Reporter, who, by the way, is the second
most talented player in the draft. It is healthy, Oh,
he would have won number two, But he would have
went number two if he was healthy. Telling you, especially
(31:38):
because of the way the NBA's right now, he's again,
I said at the same stage, he reminded me of
Kevin Durant a couple of years ago. And I think
it would have been Kevin Durant. But he's six ten,
he can rise up, he can shoot the hell out
of the ball, he's smooth, he's long, and then he
can get to the basket quick and a couple of dribbles,
and he reminds me a little bit of Jayson Tatum.
(31:59):
He passed the I'm telling you your kid, you did
see super Let me ask Jeff, uh you know what
about the ancillary stuff? You know, the family and uh
so so, why so so? Why would you take him
second if he were healthy, even though he has that
off the court stuff, because you wouldn't care if he's
(32:20):
that talented, You don't care. You know. I got these
questions back in September from NBA guys calling me saying like,
what's up with this kid? And I'm like, what do
you mean? Like I've known my reporter well and they're
telling me all this stuff, how he's acting with his
teammates and he's not really communicating with him and he's
got an air of arrogance about him. And I'm saying like,
why this isn't a kid. I know, but you heard
(32:41):
it over and over and over and then you start
to believe it. And I do think when you couple
the back injury with some of those questions, then maybe
a team like Charlotte who probably you know you think
about it and they end up getting um Miles Bridges,
and you say to yourself, all right, Myles Bridges or
my comporta with the back and the character issues, We're
(33:02):
going to take the step safe bet here and go
with Myles Bridges. All right, Jeff, let me ask you
about Trey Young. Um. Essentially, the Atlanta Hawks determined that
a guy who was not a top one hundred draft
guy a year ago had equal value to the m
v P of the second best league in the in
the world in Luca don Chi. I mean, Jeff, not
(33:27):
quite equal. Well that's what they're saying. I know they
had to give up the first but you know, I mean, Jeff,
come on, dude, Well I like Tray Young, but Jeff,
come on, you're you're Travishlank, You're you're the GM of
the Hawks. He came from Golden State, so you're trying
to build now a poor man's golden state, and you're
doing it with Trey Young, is your point. It's a
(33:48):
poor man Steff Curry. According to some people, you're you're
doing it with Kevin Herder, who you drafted at nineteen,
who could be his version of Clay Thompson. And you're
doing it with the Maris Fellman who you drafted at thirty,
who you're hoping is your version of Traymond Green. I'm
just telling you shooting from a Jeff from a from
(34:08):
a perspective of Okay, we don't want to compare this
guy to Steph Curry, but the for the former front
office guy from the Warriors just drafted him. Dude, you
we know he's not gonna be Stef Curry, but Jeff,
can he be hold Trey Young come up and be
Mike Bibby, you know, go to two All Star Games
and that's a good career. Maybe and now again, maybe
he's got my patients. Listen, listen, Here's what I'll say
(34:32):
is physically he's not ready. You're gonna have to wait
till the second contract. Because this kid didn't think he
was gonna be in the NBA after a year. They
thought it was gonna take three or four years for
him to get there. Uh number two, I don't think
any of these point guards, Trey Young, Colin Sexton, Shay Guilty, Sallexander.
I could see all three of those guys in five
years being starting point guards for non playoff teams. Can
(34:55):
they be top ten point guards in the league. I'm
not sure any of them can at the end of
the death Wow, All right, Jeff Goodman, we'll wrap up
on this. Listen. I don't want to kill Marvin Bagley.
You know, you don't want to go after young kids.
But you know, the idea that Marvin Bagley wanted to
go to Sacramento to me, you know, that's a bit
of a red flag. I gotta be honest with you.
(35:15):
And and and I don't know what his like, what's
a long terment. I know what he wanted to go there.
He worked out for them. How about this, If Marvin
Bagley is Zach Grandolph, would you call that a success?
Zach Grandolf went to two All Star Games in seventeen years,
but he was the nineteenth pick overall. Uh yeah, I
(35:36):
don't know. I don't know if I call that a success.
That's all. Listen, It's not easy to make an All
Star Game. Okay, you gotta be I mean, I don't
know that Bagley's gonna make two All Star Games in
his career. I think he's a good number two or
three guy on an NBA team at the end of
the day. Now, what I will say is when he
(35:56):
said about Sacramento, look at the other teams that were
drafted Hi, you know, Phoenix, Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas. It's not
like you were. You were put in l A, you know,
New York, Boston, major media market in the equation. I've
said it with Badley. Listen, Puma signed him. He's not
gonna be able to sell sues. He's not that type
of kid. He's not that type of player. But at
(36:18):
the end of the day, he'll be a good, solid,
you know, fifteen, sixteen and eight guy for the Kings.
But is anybody gonna care? If anybody gonna watch? All right, Jeff,
could have been good stuff as usual. Thank you very much.
Get healthy with that injury and we'll talk to you.
That's all good. Jeff host of a Good and Plenty podcast,
(36:38):
always bringing the juice. I feel bad that he had
to go to Lithuanio with LaVar Ball for how long?
With like six weeks? I mean, can you imagine being
in the proximity of LaVar Ball for six weeks? That's
just disgusting. Coming up next on the Big Lead Fox
Sports Radio. Sometimes in sports, the worst thing happening isn't
always bad. I'll explain next. What does it mean when
(37:01):
Geico says just fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent
or more on car insurance? Means you probably should have
gone to Geico dot com fifteen minutes ago. Good stuff
from Jeff Goodman and be a draft Michael Porter Jr.
(37:21):
And I want to kind of pivot to this um
and I think I've told the story maybe before on
this show. So just remember this that sometimes, you know,
the worst thing happening is not that bad. And I'll
never forget. I had just started the website while I
was doing it anonymously, and I had a job. I
(37:42):
had some friends who were working at a magazine of
our rival company, ESPN, the magazine which at the time
was you know, really up and coming magazine, and they
were able to get me an interview there and I
prepared my butt off research the guy I was going
to interview with I knew the magazine, I knew the
people there. I was in. I crushed the interview, and
(38:03):
it was pretty clear the guy knew it. Um. I
mean I just slated. I was referencing his book and
stuff like that. I mean, it was, it was, I was.
It was a dominant performance by myself until nearly the
end of the interview, when he was pretty clear he
knew I was prepared, and he's like, you know, Jason,
just tell me something interesting non sports, And I'm telling you,
(38:23):
I was a young guy in New York City, just
chasing girls around, going out two or three nights a week,
partying and then watching sports, and then I would do
the website and I had nothing. I was just I
wasn't going to museums in New York City. I wasn't
soaking up culture. And I kind of blanked and fumbled
my way through something. And I think he was pretty
(38:44):
at that point. I knew I wasn't getting the job,
and I walked out and I was just distraught, just
crestfall and I called my girlfriend, who's now my wife,
and I was like, well, I guess I gotta just
stick to the website and it turned out also, I
stick to the website and gets sold. I I end
up here on TV and radio. So the worst thing
happening is not always that bad that happens in life.
(39:05):
And and I think that applies to Michael Porter Jr.
Who fell big time in the draft that I could
red shirt. Okay in Denver this year they got they
got a playoff team there. They just missed the playoffs.
I don't think sometimes when the worst thing happens, it's
always that bad. Maybe it leads to something else. What
do they say when when one door closes and a
(39:27):
window opens or something along those lines. And I just
want Spurs fans to think about the Kawhi Leonards situation
that way. Maybe it is the worst thing ever that
you know, potential m v P wants to leave and
blah blah blah. Maybe it's gonna be all right. Something
could happen that's not gonna make it the worst thing
(39:48):
in the world, whether it's picks or players. I'm telling
you right now, guys, there are so many players that
fall into Jonovan Mitchell falls in the draft last year
to third Wait a sec. Donovan, that's that's unfortunate. He's
gotta go to Utah. Boom may get to the second
round of the playoffs. Donovan Mitchell's a start. It happens
(40:10):
just in life. When you're going through something bad, just
think about this and remember, Hey, maybe it's gonna be fine.
There's gonna be something else coming around the corner, all right,
coming up next here on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio,
I'm diving deep, folks. The l A Lakers just slaughtered
the draft. It's such a good job. I'll tell you why.
Lebron is absolutely gonna love it. Yo yo yo. Our
(40:34):
number two is here. Good morning, East Coast, eleven am
two everybody on the East Coast. A nice dreary eight
am start here on the West Coast. I am your host,
Jason McIntyre, coming to you live from the Geico Fox
Sports Radio studios. Fifteen minutes could save you fift or
(40:56):
more on car insurance. Visit Geico dot com for a
free rate quote. The obligatory World Cup update. After Belgium
put a beat down on Tunisia earlier, Mexico and um
I believe Korea just kicked off moments ago. Chicrito is
(41:18):
one of the coolest names in all of sports. I
just love saying rito. UM, I will say this. I'm
not gonna pull a land to Donovan and tell you
the route from Mexico. Ain't nobody paying me to do that.
Our number one was fun, and I want to start
our number two here with this. I know that the
(41:40):
NBA Draft is a fraction of what the NFL draft audiences.
I believe three points three million UH folks tuned into
the NBA Draft on TV and something like eleven million
watch the NFL Draft. So I get that there's a
big disparity. UM, I love both. I don't think there's
a problem with loving both. UM. I could argue that
(42:04):
the NBA Draft has higher impact pairs players. However, and
this is where I want to go as it pertains
to Lebron and the Lakers and potentially Lebron and the
Caves or Lebron and the Sixers. Um. Doing the little
things in life are so important. I cannot stress that enough.
(42:25):
It's the little things that put you over the top.
So all the married guys out there, you you know
where I'm coming from when I say this. You know
you're walking through the kitchen, maybe you want to put
something in the trash, and you notice the trash is full.
You know what the slick move is. It's a little thing.
Just take out the trash, don't let it pile up.
Don't wait for the wife to be like, hey, could
(42:46):
you take out the trash room recycling? Just get it done.
Maybe every two months you come home from work. On
the way home, just stop by the grocery store. Pick
up some flowers, little things, cheap flowers. You don't need
to go. You don't need to bouquet of roses, you know, yeah,
pick up with the ten bucks flowers. So it goes
a long way with the wife. It's the little things
(43:08):
that matter. And when I looked at the NBA draft,
and you guys are gonna love this, Yeah, I love this.
Um I thought the Lakers did the little things in
the NBA draft. Now, if if we could all agree
that there's essentially three teams vying for Lebron. A lot
of people are ruling out the Spurs now, and a
(43:29):
lot of people are ruling out the Rockets. Um. I
guess mostly because they would have needed to be Lebron
opting in and then being traded. And I don't think
either of those teams have the goods to make the deal.
So the Lakers did the little things. But the other
two teams, the Calves in the sixers, they did not
do the little things. They didn't And to me, and again,
(43:53):
I know you're gonna I know you're sitting at home screaming, Jason, Jason.
The draft is not gonna sway Lebron, not totally. But
it's a body of work. It's the little things. So
what are these little things that I'm talking about. Well, okay,
Lebron has left Cleveland from Miami, and Lebron left Miami
(44:13):
for Cleveland, and in both stops, Lebron knows he needs shooting.
Paramount drive and kick post and kick corner, three ball.
That's what Lebron needs. I don't know if it's number one,
but he needs shooters around him. What did the Lakers
do in the draft? Well, in the first round they
(44:36):
got a guy by the name of Moe Wagner, big, tall, German,
skilled player, went to Michigan. Guess what he can do.
He's a shooter. He's a very good shooter in fact,
And this is what I love even more, and I'm
gonna dial it back. Look at how well the Lakers
crushed the draft last year, they after a Lonzo ball.
(44:58):
They got two guys who started for two years in college. Now,
Josh Hart played four years of Illanova, started for two.
That means he can come into the NBA and he's
ready to contribute. No learning curve. Kyle Kuzma started for
two years at Utah, played three years, comes into the NBA,
(45:21):
no major learning curve. Those guys were impact players. Immediately listen.
Josh Hart of the Lakers average fifteen points after the
All Star Break tabby. That's a limited number of games,
but fifteen for your second round pick, that's dynamite. So
the Lakers looked at this draft and said, where can
we get a guy who started for two years and
shoot threes? Oh, we've done our homework. Moe Wagner Michigan,
(45:46):
started for two years, carried Michigan to the title game
this year, and this is this is beautiful Lakers fence.
I'm get excited. Moe Wagner in a tournament. You can
look this game up on YouTube. He tore arched Louisville
and I'm gonna say, oh, it's just Louisville. Donovan Mitchell
was on that Louisville team. Moe Wagner was the best
(46:07):
player on the court that night. Technically was that afternoon.
I remember the game because I'm at march madness, degenerate.
Um Wagner just lit him up, hung twenty six on Louisville.
Then this season carries Michigan to the title game. Made
sixty three threes this year. I can shoot it. He's
(46:27):
got a good stroke. I'm telling you right now, market down,
nick Laker fan Moe Wagner, assuming he's not traded to
the Spurs or whatever for Kauai, He's gonna play ten
to fifteen minutes a night this year. You don't need
Brook Lopez coming back. I'm not saying Moe Wagner is
a starter. He's not. But he's gonna come off the
bench and play ten to fifteen minutes. So in the
(46:48):
second round, what did the Lakers do? Oh let's see,
are there any other guys who have started for a
couple of years, hung around college for a while, and
can shoot. Oh well, look at that fancy that fellow
by the name of v McKay luke. I know you're
like Jason stopped. Come on, a euro kid who don't
(47:09):
play no defense? Softie? Okay? I just got done telling
you Lebron needs shooters. V McKay look finished the season
with a hundred and fifteen threes, top ten in the country,
and he made for three. Now, if you didn't watch
any college basketball, you've never heard of this guy. You're like,
maybe he chips in. I watch college basketball, and I
(47:33):
know that sometimes I can color your impact on on
on somebody. You think they're a lot better because you
watch them. No. V mckaylok can shoot. Now, obviously he
doesn't have the defensive chops. He's not the athlete, uh
that you're gonna need. He could come off the bench
and play a little bit. This is a guy who
can be a contributor if called upon. Listen, Lakers fans,
(47:55):
Alex Caruso, you know who he is. He played thirty
seven games of the Lakers average fifteen minutes a night. Now,
I know Lonzo Ball injured, blah blah blah. I'm just
saying the Lakers are gonna need minimum players surrounding their
two or three max guys. V McKay look can stroke it.
(48:17):
The kid's gonna get gonna get a chance to shoot it.
He's a good player. The Lakers did the little things
in the draft that can are sending a message to Lebron. Hey, Lebron,
we really really want you here. You like shooters, you
you don't want to play with young rookies who are ready.
We got them for you. V McKay, look Moe Wagner.
(48:37):
Ohh and the cherry on top, Nick, you love this
for Laker fans? What do the Spurs like? They love
European players. They love those crafty Euros with the high
i Q. Good shooters, team players, not me. First, Diva's
if you're gonna trade a couple of young guys to
(48:58):
the Spurs as part of a bigger package. The two
kids the Lakers just drafted totally qualified. Now I know,
producer Rob's gonna want me to throw in the third guy,
a draft and stash kid that the Lakers got you.
I'll let you say his name, Rob, so I don't
butcher another name on air um. He's a nineteen year old.
He's not gonna be here. He could be here two years.
(49:19):
I don't know if he's gonna be a factor. You
want to try to say it, Rob, Isaac Bunga Bunga,
I thought that related to Mo Bamba. I thought that
was a party that what the Italian prime minister had
that got him in trouble. Bumba parties, bunga parties, whatever
it was. Let's just say this guy makes Brandon Ingram
look thick. That's funny, all right. So I'm telling you
(49:41):
the Lakers did the little things in the draft. So
the other two teams that want Lebron or that have
a chance at Lebron are the Cleveland Cavaliers, who you know,
the hometown team, and what do they do in the draft? Well,
they got a kid that I like a lot, Colin Sexton.
He's a bulldog, he's tough. The one thing, the one
(50:04):
thing Colin Sexton does not do his shoot. He's not
a shooter. Yeah, he's not a guy who's gonna step
in and be able to bang three. I'm not saying
he's quite dear and fox. Remember last year Kentucky, he's
not a shooter at all. You just lay off him.
But Colin Sexton has not proven yet. Now down the
(50:27):
road he could be a shooter. He only made forty
four threes last year. I just told you Moe Wagner
made sixty three. Okay, So Colin Sexton is essentially making
one and a half threes a game. That's not gonna
cut it on today's NBA. But again, he's young. He
obviously has more upside than Wagner and McKay luke, There's
(50:48):
no doubt about that. But Lebron needs shooters. So then
the other team is the Sixers, and they had it.
They had the shooter, Mikail Bridges, hometown kid and cold
blooded that they drafted him, whose his mom worked for
the franchise, and then all of a sudden they trade
him for a guy who can't shoot, Zayre Smith, Texas tech,
(51:09):
great athlete, good defender, not known as a shooter. So
when you look at the little things, Lakers did it,
calves Sixers did not. Now if you look at the
other team in l A, the Clippers, I you know,
Lebron probably saw their moves in. Again, I think they're
a long shot to get Lebron, and and I will
(51:32):
not be one to question Jerry West, but I've got
to ask. We had Jeff Goodman on last hour, He's saying,
Michael Porter healthy is the second best talent in this draft.
I would have a little bit of equipment with that.
I love Luca don Chech, but the Clippers straight up
passed on Michael Porter. They had two chances to get him.
(51:53):
I Jerry West, I love your buddy, but I mean, listen,
Michael Porter. I I think it's crazy to call him
Kevin Duran. I I think that Tracy McGrady comparisons as
a ceiling are much better. If you go look at
Porter on YouTube. He is a drive guy. He can
splash threes. The fact that Jerry West and the Clippers
(52:15):
passed on him, the fact that the Clippers couldn't get
a deal done to move up, the fact that the
Clippers want Kawhi Leonard badly but drafted two guys who
I don't necessarily think that are gonna be enticing to
the Spurs. I just thought the Clippers had Can I
call it a weird draft? I thought it was weird
(52:38):
from the Clippers, Just a little bit of strange decision there.
When you got two picks, you can't package them to
move up. They couldn't get off of that Gallinari contract.
Nobody wants that contract. Just very odd from the Clippers.
And I know you're gonna say, Jason, you're a Homer,
you just want Lebron with the Lakers. Well, I mean, yeah,
I kind of do, because then I'd be able to
(52:59):
see a lot of Lebron on live. Um, but I
can't undeniable. It's undeniable that the Lakers had a phenomenal
draft in Lebron has got to got to be at
least a little bit enticed. And I'll leave you with
this before we go to break. Uh. You know, Brian
win Horse a good friend of the show. I was
texting with him yesterday and he said that he is
(53:25):
fifty one cent Lebron to l A and that would
be even if it's alone. Now, that's even if Lebron
can't bring Paul George, can't get Kauai. That's where he
is now. Now, Listen, these things are fluid. I'm not
trying to put win horsed on blast. He said that, Um,
Lebron to ally. I still don't think there's a better
(53:46):
option out there. Lakers fans, it's time to get excited,
all right? Coming up next year on the Big Lead
Fox Sports Radio, I already talked a little bit about
the arrogant San Antonio Spurs and how they're ruining their
situation with Kawhi Leonard, but I'm to add something to
another arrogant group of people, and that's big men coming
into the NBA. Wait till you hear this that's coming
(54:08):
up next year on the picure on the Big Lead,
Fox Sports Radio. I had a weird moment yesterday guys
after Jurassic Park. Um So, by the way, the movie
is ridiculous. You should see it, ridiculously awesome. Um So,
my son was at a birthday party. It was like
six kids, we go to see Jurassic two dads. So
(54:30):
we go to shake Shack after the movie and um,
you know, it's crowded, and then this guy's like, oh,
you guys can have our table and we're like, oh thanks,
So we, you know, sat down. So I go on Twitter,
like I don't know, like ninety minutes later, and I
look at my mentions and I see some guys say
just sat next to Jason McIntyre at shake Shack, And
(54:52):
I was like, WHOA, what what? And I started to
play it back in my head and I'm like, who
I don't remember reber this person. Because I like to
try to be very Jason born in public, always looking
for exits. I'm looking for shady characters. You know I
got I got my head on a swivel. Um, that
sounded so losory to say. Jeez, I just realized that.
(55:14):
And I initially I didn't know who it was, but
you know, I showed it to my wife. I'm like,
this is weird. She's like, you know, listen, you gotta
be more mindful in public. Like what if I had
let my kid go on my phone and was playing
games or I said a bad word or something, And like,
it's just weird seeing that stuff happen. It's happening a
little more now. I guess because of the FS one
(55:35):
in this show. Um, but I guess if if you
see me out, just you know, be polite. Obviously that's all.
I don't be that weird. I thought it was a
little weird that some would not say anything but then say, yeah,
I just sat next to the guy at any rate,
just thought i'd passed that along. Um, what does it
mean when Geico says just fifteen minutes could save you
fifteen percent or more on car insurance? I means you
(55:56):
probably should have gone to Geico dot com fifteen minutes ago.
Mexico and Korea zero zero in oh zero zero in
the twenty second minute, Korea ahead or just goes high,
Just goes high. Actually, Korea has had better chances here
than Mexico early, you know, coming off the win over Germany,
(56:17):
was it Yeah, I think Mexico be Germany and their opener.
They seem like a little lethargic here, almost as if
to say, hey, yeah, we got that first win, We're awesome,
We're gassed up, and Korea is putting a toolm early
but still zero zero. Um. So I had a great
chat with producer Rob between the commercial break when I'm
not scrolling through my Instagram inbox, Rob and I chat
(56:40):
about the show and we just had a good, good talk.
I want to know where you guys sit on this
discussion because it's interesting. So we just saw the draft.
Have five big men go in the top seven. DeAndre
at in the straight up center went one. Marvin Bagley,
(57:01):
who's a power forward stretch he's not really stretched for.
He's a big go to. We add Jaren Jackson, who's
a big but can maybe be a Draymond type player,
go four. Mo Bamba went six, he's a center. Wendell
Carter went seven. So it's like, wait a second, I
(57:22):
thought Jason said, this is a two way league. Now,
it's all about win players. Yeah, yeah, it is. And
that's why these bigs that went. If you go and
look at their process of getting to the draft, the
first thing they all did, all of them, was put
(57:42):
out videos of them shooting three pointers. That's it. Nothing
but the big shooting three pointers, as if to say, hey, hey,
I'm not a back to the basket fossil like Shock
or David Robinson. Oh hold on, we gotta interrupt this
conversation because of Oh, this is so unfortunate handball in
(58:02):
the box by Korea and Mexico is gonna get a
penalty kick here, man, that stinks for Korea. They were
playing great and this guy goes to make a sliding
save and he stuck his arm up and the ball
hit his arm. So Mexico gets a free kick. Oh man,
that's gonna This is gonna be brutal for Korea because
they've been playing well. Um, listen, I'm one of those
weird guys. Sorry to interrupt this good NBA conversation, but
(58:26):
I'm weird. I get about goose bumps on like of
World Cup goals because again we see a big shot
in basketball, big touchdown in football. This isn't just about
a team of fan base. This is a country and
it's only every four years. So when Iceland gets a goal,
it's like you get excited. That's Switzerland goal in the
(58:48):
ninetieth minute yesterday. It was incredible. I got goose bumps
and dude ripped the shirt off. It looked like incredible hulk.
That was awesome. So Mexico gets a penalty kick here
again it's Korea, and listen, you gotta you gotta p
k in the first twenty five minutes. You convert. Hey,
that's huge in Mexico will be getting their second win
if they get it here. The kick is up, it
(59:11):
is back of the net. Mexico scores and it's one
nothing over Korea. Now I don't know the players well enough,
but I know seventeen is not Chicrito. So Mexico takes
a one nothing lead. List of the World Cups. Exciety
All right, back to the NBA. So my big men's spiel,
we're seeing all these bigs in the NBA. Now the
(59:31):
guys coming in, they don't want to be that fossil.
They don't have the back to the basket game of shock, Jabbar,
Eve Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, all of them. That that
position where you come down the court and you put
your big button the post and you post up, but
you're back to the basket. That doesn't exist anymore. What
bigs are in the modern NBA is the ability to
(59:54):
step out and shoot the three guard guards on the perimeter.
You gotta be able to defend and move your feet quickly,
and you gotta be a room runner on the pick
and roll like a Clint Cappella. Right, it's Clint Cappella
gonna get paid this summer because producer rob seems to
think so. And I'm like, I don't know. Look, what's
(01:00:16):
the market for Clint Cappella. How many teams are gonna
be backing up the brinks to pay that guy? And again,
Clint Cappella put up good numbers. I'll say this player
efficiency rating in the NBA. Clint Cappella was thirteen in
the league, the thirteenth most efficient player, ahead of Chris Paul,
(01:00:37):
Jimmy Butler, Oladipo, and Bead Kevin Love. Listen. Now, if
you go by that, it's like, geez, Clint Cappella has
got a ton of value. But let's pump the brakes.
Let's pump the brakes because as Rob's gassing up Clint Cappela,
I'm saying, well, okay, he played in the Houston offense
(01:01:00):
where Mike D'Antoni has historically gimmick his stars to greatness.
Steve Nash want two m v P Awards, and we
got a guy in here, Nick running the soundboard, who
like discredit Steve Nash's two MVP awards. Well, Jeremy Lynn
turned into a star with Mike D'Antoni. So Nick, let
(01:01:21):
me put you on the spot. Clint Cappella, Are these
numbers inflated because of Mike D'Antoni and playing alongside James Harden?
If you're Orlando or Dallas, are you going nuts for
Clint Cappella? Not? Okay, So here you go, Julius Randall
or Clint Cappella. Who would you rather pay? Rob will
(01:01:42):
start with you. Listen, Julius Randall. Lakers are gonna have
a tough option if they bring in Paul George. You
can't play Paul George and Lebron. You can't pay Randall. Well,
technically you could, but that's a conversation for another day.
Clint cappellas who you'd pick over Julius Randall. Oh, I
totally because of his defense at the rim. And I
(01:02:06):
like Julius Randall Lebron that I think the Calves basically
said to Lebron, do you want DeAndre Jordan's rim protector?
DeAndre Jordan is an older version of Clint Capella, Right,
maybe a little better defender on the perimeter. Capella could
Capella would be the better perimeter defend, but Jordan's a
better rim protector. I don't think Lebron wanted him. All
(01:02:27):
the big guy does is clogged the lane, and that's
why he's on the bench. Capella in the in the
important fourth quarter minutes so that James Harden and Chris
Paul can go to work and get to the rim. Yeah,
what happens Golds, They get to the rim at will
against whoever he's up there. So it's it's a dance
that you It's so there's a fine line there, you know.
Just I'm gonna say this real quick. I know where
to get to an update here, but I'll say like
(01:02:47):
I said to you during the commercial break, Mike D'antoni's system,
and this myth that you can't score from the post
is ruining basketball. Oh that's an incendiary take. Nick, Can
you write that down as a note. We've got to
come back to it after our next guest, Nick, real
quick though, Randall or Cappella? Who would you pay? Lakers
(01:03:07):
fans hate me'm I was never pay Randall, guy, So
if it's like around that same price range, I'd go Cappella.
So both of you are going Cappella. I mean, I'll
need to give it more thought because I don't want to.
I don't want to be on the wrong side here.
All right, we'll come back to this year in about
twenty minutes, but coming up next year on the Big
Lead Fox Sports Radio, I've been going in on the
(01:03:28):
Arrogant Spurs all morning. We're gonna talk to someone who
covers the team and he'll answer the question. Listen, would
they rather lose Kauai for nothing on principle then trade
him away. We'll find out the answer to that next,
but first let's go to Isaac Lowenkron for the Latest
and Sports. Jason, you gotta hear this. So as we speak,
it's the World Cup on Fox Mexico with the one
(01:03:50):
nothing lead over South Korea in the thirty first minute.
So let's hear how that Mexico penalty kick goals sounded
just moments ago, courtesy of our new favorite Fox broadcast team.
Listen to how Jorge Perez Navarro and Mariano True Hillo
called it just moments ago on Fox. Do your love soccer?
(01:04:12):
I love the soccer is just a game for you.
It's it's junker dumb. You know soccer is more than
a game for me. Well, it's not for Carlos Little
works in soccer. He's licking his lips. He's feeling so
deep he's going to get the same moad. I hear
a whistle, Here comes the boon by Max Coppy. Look
(01:04:57):
out Joe and Troy. Jorge Perez Navarro and Mariano true
Hillo are coming for you. Mexico one nothing over South
Korea in the thirty second minute. Earlier today, Belgium against Tunisia.
The goals in that one coming fast and furiously, particularly
for the Belgians. Here's a chance coming up. Looks up
(01:05:24):
for Belgi three long JP Della camera the call on Foxes.
Belgium wanted to win at five to two coming up
at two pm Eastern Non Fox defending World Cup Germany,
World Cup Champion Germany that is, takes on Sweden in Russia,
Game three of today's World Cup tripleheader, All on Fox. Jason,
back to you. Thank you, Isaac. I did get goose
(01:05:46):
bumps on that gold call. That was awesome. I just
get so into the World Cup. Man. I know it's
every four years and that's probably the reason, but the
passion for countries and fans, I just love it all.
Right back here on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio,
I am your host, ladies and gentlemen, Jason McIntyre, coming
to you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios.
(01:06:10):
It's easy to say or more. On car insurance with Geico,
go to Geico dot com or called one eighth nine
seven Auto. The only hard part figuring out which way
is easier. Now. I've I spent the better part of
this morning taking some shots at the arrogant San Antonio Spurst.
I was personally shocked that they didn't trade Kauai before
(01:06:35):
the draft. Um, and now it's looking and sounding more
and more like this is gonna stretch out and they
are gonna hope that all the Laker, free agent money
is spent and uh, all the free agent moves are made,
and then they can convince Kauai to maybe stick around.
I think it's a bad strategy, but hopefully our next
(01:06:56):
guests can help us answer that. Let's welcome in Jabari Young.
He covers the Spurs for The News Express in sin
and Express News in San Antonio. Jabari, good morning, how
are you. I'm doing good man? I gotta say, I
do I use Geko. So that's that's what's up, you know,
like that's my car insurance. Thank you for the plug.
All right, Jabari, let's let's start here. Was there any
(01:07:18):
talk at all that you heard internally from the Spurs
about Kauai possibly getting dealt before the draft? No? I mean,
and it's not internally, it's it's around the league, you
know what I mean. I don't think the I think
the vibe was people were gonna make pitches, but um,
you know, but they didn't expect the Spurs to really bite.
They're gonna take good time. They're gonna maybe try to,
(01:07:38):
you know, see if they can work things out. But
you gotta also remember some teams are reluctant to just
you know, give up a lot of good assets. Uh.
And then Kauai comes and he tells it was my resigning.
So if you get yourself fired, don't blame me, you
know what I mean, because I'm not resigning with you.
So a lot of teams are reluctant to do it.
And I talked to one Eastern Conference GM and he's listening.
We wanted to submit a package, but you know, we
(01:08:00):
don't think they're going to take it, you know, And
if they did take it, then you have to convince
him to come and stay here. He's already made it
known that he wants to the n L as though.
You know, um, you know, we could take a shot
at it, but if we missed, then that might be
our jobs, you know, so um, you know, and the
Spurs have leverage, you know. Listen. You know, as the
point in ours review for made after the draft when
he spoke, uh, he's under contract, you know, he signed
(01:08:22):
that contract back in two thousand and four, fifteen, was it?
And uh, you know he's under contract. So you know,
as a player, if the team doesn't trade you or
doesn't give into that demand, you gotta do what you
gotta do. And if that means playing out the final
year and then you'll walk because you have more control
than so be it. But um, it's not like the
Spurs have to rush anything. They have a lot of leverage,
and so does Kauai because he could say, hey, listen,
(01:08:43):
I'm not resigning, uh and I'm not going to go
to any team you'll trade you to except for the Lakers.
So that's interesting, Jabari, because Spurs have the leverage. I
don't oh, I guess I asked that because if Kauwai
says I don't want to play anywhere but the Lakers,
obviously the Celtics and Sixers and everybody, they're not going
to trade for him and take a chance. But I mean,
(01:09:06):
how are the Spurs having the leverage if it's you know,
going into the summer, they still have him on the
roster and he just doesn't want to play there. He's
sick of how they treated him last season. Which I
know a lot of people are bashing Kauai here, but listen,
Tony parker Man, who gen nobidly long time guys he
played with, took shots at him. Popovich took shots at him.
I just I don't see how the Spurs have any
(01:09:26):
leverage here, Well, they do because again he's under contract.
I mean, so when you sign a contract, you gotta
honor that. Ki Kauai Ford to sit out an entire
season again because he's unhappy. No, you gotta play, dude,
because if you don't, then you're only diminishing your values.
Then we only got to go back, and we gotta
go back to two years now to see what you want,
could could do. We gotta worry about. That's an interesting encounter. Yeah,
(01:09:48):
you can't afford to sit out another season. So if
you're healthy, you're ready to play, and the Spurs not
this and they've checked, then you gotta show up. And
you gotta even if you're if if you're mad or whatever,
you won't be there, that's fine, but you gotta play.
You gotta show up. You gotta play. So last in
that last summer, we're talking about Jabari Young of the
Expressed News in San Antonio. Last summer, Kyrie Irving demanded
to be traded and they were like, yeah, we're not
(01:10:10):
gonna trade you, and he's like, well, I'm just gonna
get surgery and sit out the whole season, you know,
And I maybe he was bluffing. Um. But as a result, uh,
you know, they traded him quickly. Now the Kawhi Leonard situation,
he's only twenty six. I took twenty seven this summer.
I mean he could just say, listen, my quad is
(01:10:31):
still not healed. I'm gonna sit out. Like maybe that
damage is a little bit of his value and he
has to sign a shorter deal. But even if he
signs like a two or three year deal with the
Lakers or whomever, he's still in line to get a
huge payday at thirty. So I'm not sure about that.
I'm really not. Yeah, I'm not because you can't sit
out two years and expected just come back in and
(01:10:51):
and all of a sudden get a big contract based
off what you did two years ago. Kawhi Leander will
be doing himself at this service. If he performed and
he took that route, you can't do that. I mean,
he set out most of last season. If you're a
hundred percent, which you're telling people behind the scenes that hey,
I'm close to a and all of a sudden, your
your quad relapses, um, then teams have to look at
that as a red sign and say, okay, well wait
a minute. You know what I mean, this is two
(01:11:13):
this is another year where your quad isn't right. What's
going on here? So you know, then then he got
to go back and prove himself once again that he
can play. And you know, I think that's the minision
of his value. If he is a hundred percent and
even if he's not traded, you gotta be a pro
with it, and you gotta show up and you gotta
play basketball. I mean, that's just the business. And if
you do that, if you do that route, and I'm
not sure that that's a smart move on Kaua's behalf.
(01:11:34):
Uh And I tell him Matt too to his face,
you know, And I don't think it's smart. But at
the same time, like I said, both parties have leverage.
It's just who's willing to give more. And I think
right now the Spurs are trying to stay in their ground. Okay,
so Jabari Young, let's play this out. Let's say Kauai
is not traded, he does play, he shows up as
a good soldier, but he still says he wants out
and he has no intention of resigning. So what do
(01:11:56):
the Spurs then do with the trade deadline? If held
I want to play for the Lakers. I mean, let's
say let's say that they go and they make a
few rossing movies, and let's say by the trade deadline,
they're sitting pretty as the number one seed in the West. Right,
if you're Kawhile Learners, that you still want out or
are you trying to get yourself another ring at that point?
That's that's why I say the Spurs have leverage because
when you play basketball and you start winning again, that
(01:12:19):
seems to cure a lot of things. You know what
I mean when it seems to cure a lot of things.
And if you're Kawhile Learners, you're sitting in the top
of the Western Conference, number one. See let's say to
go to Stay Wars are going through something or whatever
like that, Houston Rockets, and you're number one, and you're
you're sitting pretty okay, and you're you're back to where
you once was. Kawhi Lenard be ain't one of the
top three players in the league. I'm not so sure.
(01:12:40):
You just want to go out and and and ask
out because listen, whatever happens, the Spurs gonna still get
something in return for you, and you might even need
them to do a sign and trade. You know what
I mean, if you're trying to recoup some of that
value that you're gonna lose if you don't sign a
two hundred and nineteen million, five year extension if it's offered,
you know what I'm saying. So I'm not so sure
about that, and I think that's what the Spurs are
banking on. And listen, if we get us back to
(01:13:01):
where we once were when we were up twenty five
against the Golden State Wars in the Western Provice finals
and we was bawling, we feel like this might cure. Now,
if you get to a point where you just are
so short that this man wants out here, doesn't want
to play for you, he'll make it very tough for you,
then you gotta do go Plan B and do business.
But right now, I'm not sure if they're at that point.
Remember it took all the way up until around Argust
(01:13:23):
before they convince the markets are just to hang on.
It took a few meets between with Greg Papavis. Everybody
seems to forget before this age of social media, some
doctop was ready to walk. Greg Papavis had to go
and convince him to stay, you know what I mean,
he was ready to go to Orlando. So you know
this stuff behind the scenes. You know that they've they've
been here before in a way. Uh, it's just that
they haven't been here where their superstar player feels betrayed
(01:13:45):
and feels like y'all didn't have his back the way
that he had y'all back on the court. And it's
a lot of repairing that they gotta do. And and
RCPU for the game came out of sat. Oh, we
wish we weren't at this point, you know, But I
think the Spurs understand that they have to take some
of the blame to They can't just set here and
blame it all on Kauaid his cant and his uncle
is and his uncle. No, y'all gotta take some of
the blame too, because up until that point, that man
(01:14:06):
didn't say a damn thing. All he did was come out,
give you thirty on one way, the other way, come
back block of James Harden, shot, shut down whoever you
need him to shut down and help you win a game.
Two time Defensive Player of the Year NBA Finals, m
v P, NBA All Team, NBA All defensive teams. I mean,
come on, or he has your back on the court,
you gotta have his back off the court. That's a
(01:14:26):
great point, uh, charcol Jabari Young of the Express News
covers the Spurs all right, so quick counter to that. So, yes,
Duncan almost left for Orlando. But I mean, again, this
is way back. I don't remember the public shots being levied,
you know, even LaMarcus Aldres last summer. I don't think
anybody internally took shots at him or into the media.
So this one a little different for Kauai. But the
(01:14:47):
more interesting thing you said was what if they are,
you know, a number one seed or number two come January.
Let me ask you, Jabbari, do you think that's possible
with Manu being forty, LaMarcus Aldres, there's thirty three here
and um I guess next month. You know, Pau Gasol
is up there. We don't know what Tony Parker is.
Do you think they could be a tough or seed
(01:15:08):
in the West coming into January heading into the trade deadline?
Well that all depends. I mean, and listen, we don't know.
We really don't know what this team could have been.
You know, when he went out they got Rudy Gay
and uh, you know, you make a couple of splashes,
you know, with it and not internally, I mean um
and Kyle Anderson has a phenomenal year with Kauai in
(01:15:28):
that line of we don't even know what they could
have been, and I feel like they're feeling they're feeling
the same way, like, damn, if he was healthy, you
imagine what we could have done. But with that said,
they gotta they got They gotta also handle business. They
can't just rely on Kawai islander to come back and
be hell happy again and healthy again and they think
all is fine with the world. No, they gotta go
out and they gotta make sure that the upgrade their roster.
What do you do with Polka Saw? The man has
(01:15:49):
clearly come out and said, look, I feel like I
wanted to still be a starter. Do you want to
go down at Ali again? Or do you feel like
you can put him up for deals to free up
some cat money? And who e was gonna take on
his contract? What do you do with an A and
Tony Parker knowing that him and Kauhi aren't in the
same page that you bring them back again? You gotta
sit them too down and have a conversation with them
too about listening. I know you might not like each other,
but at the same time, your teammates gotta do what
(01:16:10):
you gotta do. What do you do with a forty
year old monitor? We know he can ball, but will
that continue next season? So they have some other roster
things that they got to take care of as well.
But if they put the right pieces in place, which
listens to their credit, they have been known to do,
and obviously they have a phenomenal coach in Greg Pop
But you can make it work if they're winning by
the time the trade deadline comes around, and we obviously
know Kauai is that's out. Do they still do that?
(01:16:32):
And I don't think they're doing If you're number one
in the Western Conference, even if you're kaw while in it,
you might bite the bullet and see where you can
go with this because listen, again, when healthy, we know
he's the top three player, when everybody's around him, when
he has great pieces around him, this team can do
some damage in the Western Conference. We've seen it, we
know it. They have a coach that attention to detail,
one of the best coaches in the league. One of
(01:16:52):
the best strategic coaches in the league when you get
to the postseason. So if he has a healthy roster
with a healthy superstar and a healthy all star on
la mark us all join his team, who knows where
they can go. And I think that's the pitch that
you make to Kauai. Listen, let's repair this because on
the court, we know with you we can compete for
a championship. And if you're kauaide, you know, do you
buy in four years? All right? Cool, I'll do it
(01:17:13):
for one year and I'll see where we're at next summer.
And again, I think that's where the Spurs are trying
to bank on, just to save the relationship and try
to see if its planned basketball, it's winning will help
cure whatever is ailing them right now. Alright, Jabari Young
great stuff covers the Spurs for the Express News. Thank you, Jabari,
have a great weekend YouTube man, take care. All right,
very interesting back and forth there. I don't think it's
(01:17:36):
gonna be as easy. He made some compelling arguments. We
will soon find out, all right, coming up next year
on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio, we were talking
about that seismic shift at the center position. I'm gonna
ask you next, Julius Randall or Clint Cappella, who you
got if you're the Lakers. That's an aggressives. New home
(01:17:56):
Quote Explorer was built to save you time and money
by allowing you to compare multiple quote options all online.
So head to Progressive dot com today and see if
you can save back here on the big lead Fox
Sports Radio, interesting stuff from a guy who covers the Spurs.
(01:18:19):
It sounds like they're gonna just try to keep Kawhi
Leonard and convince him, ay, we're worth staying for. I mean,
I do think the idea of Kawai Leonard playing with
the Spurs and then being a top four seed with
no youth on that team with old Man new Old Parker,
(01:18:43):
Old Gassole LaMarcus is thirty three. To me, seems like
a bit of a long shot. But listen, they this
is a franchise that's been winning for two decades, so
who knows. Great news. There's a quick way you could
say money switched to Geico. Go to Geico dot com
and in fifteen minutes you could say fifteent or more
on Current Church. All right, Uh, a little earlier, we
(01:19:06):
were talking about the situation with Clint Cappella, who could
get paid here in the off season, or Julius Randall
of the Lakers, who also could get paid. Now, Rob
made a good point. Rob, you said nobody in the
NBA had cat money, and that's because everybody went hog
(01:19:27):
wild in twenties sixteen. I believe correct. I'm looking here
at real GM and they're very reliable. There are only
five teams who are going to have projected to have
more than ten million dollars in cap space. Okay, and
those five teams are Lakers. Forgot what this one? Pacers, Hawks, Sixers, Mavericks. Okay,
(01:19:50):
So the Sixers will be able to afford one guy, right,
could be Paul George. Maybe they bring back Reddick for
a veteran presence. Maybe they make a push for Kauai,
but they're obviously not going to get in the mix
for Randall or Capella. Now, the one team that gets interesting,
and again, big men in the NBA, not a lot
(01:20:11):
of people want him. Now, that's just how you. They
don't want to big. Everybody wants to Draymond Green. Well,
good luck finding a Draymond Green. You know. P J.
Tucker was was Draymond Ish for the Rockets. You know,
Al Horford is also another big man model that you want. Um,
I gotta say, I think the Mavericks are gonna probably
(01:20:31):
make a play for Capella or Randall. Now there's some
talk they could go after Boogie Cousins, but ultimately I
think Boogie stays in New Orleans, right, um so, so Rob,
Ultimately you're getting to maybe the Lakers can keep Julius
Randall on the cheap as possible. If nobody has money
to give him, you might be able to get him
to stay for that one year qualifying offer and then
(01:20:52):
go free agency next year. That would be madness all right,
coming up next year on the Big League Fox Sports Radio,
Kawai Leon. If he's not traded this offseason, can the
Spurs actually win with him? That's day high noon on
the East Coast, Ladies and gentlemen, still gloomy out here
(01:21:13):
in l A good morning. I'm your host, Jason McIntyre
coming to you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Fifteen minutes could save you or more on car insurance.
Visit Geico dot com for a free rate quote. I
saw Jurassic World yesterday phenomenal four stars out of five.
(01:21:40):
I absolutely loved it. If you want two hours of entertainment,
go see the movie. I really thought it was a
lot of fun. Um. I'm excited though, not only about
the final hour of the show, but I'm coaching my
first Summer League game from my my son today. It's
(01:22:01):
only seven and we're playing against seven and eight year olds.
We had like a draft and everything. It's really in depth. Uh,
and then you know, the coaches are pretty competitive. My
first time doing it, so I just drafted his friends.
So we have fun. We got a couple of good
players from our team from the winter season. Uh, we'll
see how it goes. Uh. You know it's funny for
(01:22:21):
any of you guys out there who have young kids
and you punt on coaching your kids. You'll look down
at like halftime and your shirt will be half soaked
like you're actually playing because you get into it. Man.
You know me, I get into the NBA draft, I
get into the World Cup. You're darn right, I get
into coaching some youth basketball. Uh. Quick World Cup update.
Mexico and Korea about to come out of halftime. Mexico
(01:22:45):
up one. Nothing fun match, so far Um alright, Uh,
you know, we know that the biggest story in sports
right now, outside of the World Cup, of course, is
the NBA and free agency begins in you know what,
like eight days, seven or eight days. And I don't
say I think Lebron's first two decisions came on like
(01:23:08):
July eight, in July eleven, something in that ballpark. But
as producer Rob was just pointing out to me during
the break, nobody has cap space. Nobody, nobody has planned
for the Lebron Sweepsteaks Kauai to be demanding getting out
(01:23:28):
of town. Um, Kyrie Irving. You know, you know, if
somebody wants to go to Boston and be like, hey,
Kyrie's got a year left, We're interested, nobody's ready. If
you look at the projected cap space for this July,
the Lakers are the only team that can afford to max. Guys.
That's why Lebron to the Lakers makes so much sense.
(01:23:53):
That's I mean Lebron's other landing spots. These are the
other franchises with cap space. The Indiana Pacers, he ain't
going there. The Atlanta Hawks, Lebron's not going there. Philadelphia
has can afford at twenty three million in cap space.
They would have to go through salary cap gymnastics to
get Lebron and that and that means trading guys like
(01:24:14):
Dario Serich, their young promising player, maybe trading a Robert
Covington who they just gave big money to their three
and D wing. And again, Lebron's gonna survey the landscape
and say, geez, Houston's gonna have to nuke their team
to add me. My Calves can't really do anything. They
(01:24:35):
they're the second biggest team in the luxury tax. You
know a lot of rumors. They tried to trade j R.
Smith on Draft night because they know if Lebron is
gonna come back, you don't want to look at j R.
Smith for eighty two games, dudes throwing soup at a
coach and then just botching Game one of the Finals,
which resulted endgame in a sweep for the Warriors. So
(01:24:56):
they tried to trade j R. Smith on Draft night.
That didn't take. I'm telling you, man, by process of elimination,
Lebron to the Lakers is the only team that makes sense. Now. Again,
Darryl Morey could come in, and you know some whackadoodle
trade that nobody's envisioning circumventing the cap and pulling off Lebron.
I don't see it. So Lebron to the Lakers, and
(01:25:18):
then the question becomes, you know, do they get Paul George?
And I think one of the big things. It's so
funny people keep saying to me this week, Well, Jason,
Paul George is saying, Okay, see, he's staying Paul George
is like playing paintball with with Russell Westbrook. I'm like,
all right, you guys are aware that Kevin Durant was
(01:25:39):
allegedly staying in Okay see in the weeks leading up
to him bouncing from See. So don't put any stock
in Paul George's having fun. Paul George loves it, and
Russell Westbrook and blah blah blah. Did you see the
news last night? Quietly Carmelo Anthony opting in no surprise,
(01:25:59):
give me my seven million dollars seven million dollars. Uh,
Carmelo gotta love it? Got No, you don't have to
love it. So this idea that Paul George might stay
in Okay see, I I actually posit that he's doing
that to make sure the Lakers know he wants a
(01:26:21):
max deal. Because the Lakers listen, they could look Chris, Paul,
you're unhappy and used to come on over. Maybe the
Lakers get Kauai and then because when you look back
at the Miami Heat, how they were created, Boss Wade
and Lebron all took pay cuts. They didn't take max
deal's in Miami. None of those three guys took max steals,
(01:26:43):
all of them to take a little bit less to
make it happen. Now, if Paul George is saying almost
staying okay see or putting that vibe out, that is
a message to the Lakers. I want a max deal.
I don't wanna you know, I don't want anything less
than that. And you know, I think Paul George is
a max player. I don't know, Nick, are you in
(01:27:03):
on Paul George. We got a couple of Laker fans
in here who are Everybody seems lukewarm about Paul George.
I agree, and I absolutely think he's a max player,
not because I want him on the Lakers and I
want the Lakers to give him max. But James, what
would you say? He's not not top ten? But you know,
maybe like that top ten to fifteen in the league.
(01:27:24):
Now again it gets you know, people look at his
numbers from last year, Well he's not scoring the way
he did in Indiana when he was in his prime
and going to the Eastern Conference finals. Well, yeah, he's
playing with Russell Westbrook who takes a million shots and
you know, is less enthusiastic about passing as he has
his patting his scoring stats. Um, so I'm not gonna
(01:27:47):
I'm not gonna hate on Paul George for the stats
that he put up this past season. Do you know
what numbers he's gonna put up playing next to Lebron?
I think he does. So, then the question becomes, if
the Lakers get Paul George and Lebron and they keep
the other four guys, what's the ceiling. I think winning
(01:28:07):
a title is the ceiling. Next year we've gone into this.
I I don't need to go after the Warriors again.
No team in the modern era has gone to five
straight finals. Never, not the Lakers, not the Celtics, not
Jordan's Bulls, not Kobe and Shack, not Lebron's heat. It's
(01:28:29):
just very, very difficult. The drain on the body and mind,
the Warriors have played eighty three playoff games in the
last four years. Three that's a full season. Now. I
know Lebron's gone to the finals, what seven or eight
years in a row, But look at the rest of
(01:28:51):
the Lakers. Those guys are young, they're they're not playoff
tested fresh And I keep coming back to this and nobody,
nobody wants to admit that this is reality. The Houston
Rockets with guys like Eric Gordon, Trevor Ariza, p J Tucker, guys.
(01:29:15):
A few years ago p J Tucker was playing in China.
That team took the Warriors to seven games in the
conference finals. They led games seven by eleven at halftime.
I cannot stress that enough. I know we think or
in in in sports and in life, we fall victim
(01:29:36):
to well, what did we last see the quarterback who
was awful last week? He's not going to be that
bad again next week. Okay, That's just how it is
in sports. Everybody saw the Warriors dust the Calves swept
them for Oh oh jeez, where's They're gonna dominate everybody? Lakers,
no way. They had to go seven against the Rockets.
(01:29:58):
I know historically that Rockets team was a juggernaut Lebron
and Paul George of Chris Paul and James Harden. I
think it's Lebron and Paul George and and and supporting cast.
I give it to the Lakers Kuzma, ingram A, Lonzo
and Heart or Gordon Tucker, Ariza and Capella. I give
(01:30:20):
me the two way wing players, and I'm all in,
all in on the Lakers. So now the question becomes, well,
wait a second, can you add Julius Randall to this
Lakers team with Lebron, with Paul George, And, as producer
Rob astutely pointed out, who's gonna pay Julius Randall? It's
(01:30:42):
essentially coming down to like three teams. We know it's
not the Sixers, so it's is Dallas gonna break the
bank for Julius Randall. Now, Dallas does have an incentive
to want to be out of the lottery because guess what,
they don't have a twenty first round pick. They traded
it away for Luka don Cheich, so Dallas could do it.
(01:31:06):
They also could back it up for Capella. I believe
Julius Randall. Nick, you can correct me if I'm wrong.
Julius Randall might be from the state of Texas. He
is from the Dallas area, from the Dallas So the
Mavericks know we would be throwing a monkey wrench into
the Lakers plans and we would be getting kind of
a local ish kid. We got Luca don Chich, We've
(01:31:29):
got Dennis Smith, we got Harrison Barnes. Um. I'll say this,
Mark Cuban helped facilitate the Kevin Durant situation. If you
think back to when when the Warriors needed to clear
cap room for Durant, you know, Cuban is was one
of those trades that they made with the MAVs leading
(01:31:50):
up to the signing of Durant. So you know Julius
Randall will be in play I believe for Dallas Atlanta. Well,
here's a question for you, going back to Dallas Julius Randall,
they have Harrison Barnes. They gave him the max money,
so he's getting twenty three million. I think this upcoming
year they drafted Luca don Chich. Where are they gonna
play Julius Randall. Well, they're they're thin uh at the
(01:32:13):
at the five. You know, they played a kid name,
So you're putting Dirk in the bench, is what you're saying. No,
I think you could play Randall at the five. No,
So okay, so you have where are you playing dot Chess? Then,
because he's listed as a small forward, I think you're
starting the backcourt is positionless basketball, Dennis Smith and don
Chech Barnes at the three, Novitsky at the four, Randall
maybe at the five. So even though Barnes was at
(01:32:35):
his best last year as a small ball four, you're
gonna move him around to bring in Julius Randall. Well,
the other thing Dirk is I mean, Dirk's ancient. He's
not playing thirty five minutes a night, so maybe he's
just a veteran presence. Maybe you don't start him. Maybe
you bring Dirk off the bench, or you start him
and only play him a few minutes um. But Dallas
(01:32:57):
has issues up front. Now again, if that's the do
you go there, do you go big game hunting for
Boogie Cousins? Do you go Clint Capella? Because Randall's not
a room protector. Okay, if I'm Dallas, I absolutely go
after Boogie Cousins. But the only promise he's not supposed
to come back until well into next sing right, But
you know that. I mean, we've heard of the same things.
(01:33:17):
The Pelicans are going to give him the maxim money
that he wants. They want to give him a short
term deal. If you're Dallas and you've struck out what
five straight years on free agents, and you know that
you can get DeMarcus Cousins if you give him the
money that he's asking for, why wouldn't you. Yeah, and
we know that Mark Cuban it kind of likes his
big men. Remember they got that title when they added
(01:33:40):
Tyson Chandler defensive center. He went out and took a
chance on Nerlens. Noell kind of blew up in his face. Noel,
She's what a bust um? And he went he coveted
DeAndre Jordan's badly and then got his pants pulled down
with the whole uh Clippers flew into Dallas to save
him at the last minute. Um. But yeah, I think
(01:34:01):
Mark Cuban and my guesses he goes after Capella. I
think that he would want to steal it because Houston
stolen the thunder uh in Texas from the Spurs end
even the Mavericks. You think Hughes would be petty and
just signed Capella to the offer sheet, knowing that that
would ruin any chance that they have of getting Lebron James. Sure.
I mean, come on, Mark Cuban, would you put anything
(01:34:23):
past him? So yeah, Clukee Cuban gets involved. I guess
Atlanta would be the deep sleeper. But does does Randall
work next to Collins? I just don't he want to
go to it. He said plenty of times this off season.
He wants to win Atlanta winning anytime since they could
be a bottom fight team. Um So then I guess
you go Indiana Pacers. They got Miles Turner, they got
(01:34:44):
the bonus. I don't know if he fits there. Maybe
you're onto something. I think we just broke a story
that Julius Randall is not getting paid. Oh my gosh,
there because nobody else has the cap room. Brooklyn had it,
but they just absorbed that Dwight Howard contract. By the way,
(01:35:04):
can we get into um a little later? Can we
get into my theory about Kyrie and Jimmy Butler and
Brooklyn or do you think that's so crazy that we can't.
I mean, I really do believe it has a chance.
Like when you look at what the nets just did
think about this. The Lakers cleared cap room so they
could go after Lebron and a friend this summer. They
(01:35:27):
did it. It was brilliant. Well, the Nets just did
the same thing so they can afford two guys next summer. Now,
who are the two guys? Well, I got the names
for You'll give them to you next here on the
Big Lead, Fox Sports Radio. Back here on the Big Lead,
Fox Sports Radio. What does it mean when Geico says
(01:35:50):
just fifteen minutes could save you or more on car insurance?
Means you probably should have gone to Geico dot com
fIF teen minutes ago. Uh. If I didn't have such
a good producer on this show, I probably would dive
deep into draft thoughts. I mean, I've got some Sacramento
Kings takes. I think the world is probably ready for them.
(01:36:13):
Um I got I mean I Clippers passing on Michael Porter,
I got all these notes here. What about guys staying
in school and hurting their draft stock. Robert Williams, the
guy who fell to the with the Celtics or whatever.
He was gonna be a top twelve picked last year.
Miles Bridges was gonna be top twelve. He's like, oh,
I'll come back. Maybe would be the number one pick.
(01:36:34):
Those guys both felt stick around it. Just I also
have this in my notes, rob Rick Carlyle, a defensive
minded coach. Just keep that file that one away, file
that away when when you're thinking free agency. That might
(01:36:59):
be one of the worst teasers I've ever heard. I
got tons of stuff, man, I got material. Just let
me flow. Hey, can I get this in? Okay real quick?
On the Sacramento King So I know you don't care.
This is funny, This is funny. So Marvin Bagley lies
to the King's right. So I was looking up Willie
(01:37:20):
cauley Stein and I start texting around. I'm like that
he's not staying there, Like, do you even know what
happened to Willie cauley Stein, the former Kentucky star. Oh
we got a World Cup goal? Cho what a move
in the box and Mexico puts Korea on ice to nothing.
(01:37:44):
It was almost destiny to interrupt my Willie cauley Stein.
Uh spiel so real quick. So I was texting somebody
in the league gate, what's going on Willie cowley Stein?
Is he's staying at no? Jason? PS, did you see
Willie Cauley Stein got a face tattoo. I was like,
what they were? Like, Yeah, earlier in the season he
got three initials tattooed onto his forehead, like right by
(01:38:07):
his hairline. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is an
NBA player a face tattoo. Now I know it's only
on the hairline, but it's like, dude, what are you thinking? Yeah,
so Willie Callstein is gonna be done in Sacramento. Alright,
So that's all I got there. Um, let's get back
to real news. Man. This Cheetza Rito Gold was spectacular.
(01:38:29):
Dude is a wizard in the box. Mexico to nothing.
They're gonna win both their games. They will be advancing
to the group to the knockout stages, which I guess
would begin in about like ten days. All right, um,
what are we gonna talk about here? I've already forgotten.
Oh yes, yes, yes, cap room and creating cap room
(01:38:50):
in the NBA. We have a good NFL story to
get to here in five minutes. Be patient. Um, So,
as I said, the Lakers were the few were the
only geniuses who realized it. A benute, Wait a minute, Lebron,
maybe we could get him next year, let's start clearing
cap room. So they cleared out all this cap room.
So now all the talk is, oh, Clay Thompson next summer,
(01:39:13):
Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durrett maybe, I mean, you
never know what Durant. We don't know what he's doing.
Probably staying um, but a bunch of big names could
hit next summer. So what do teams start doing this summer? Well,
the smart ones. Smart teams are planning ahead. This is
(01:39:34):
not any different from like you planning ahead for your
kids college education by opening a what is it a
four oh three B or whatever? It is one of
those um, you know tax uh, not a tax shelter,
but it's a it's a place where you can put
money tax for you to build for your kids. College education.
(01:39:54):
You could do that early. You need to to college
is expensive. So smart people and ahead. So guess what
the Brooklyn Nets did this week. I know nobody cares
about the Brooklyn Nets, but but but but but they're
located in New York City. The New York Knicks are
(01:40:16):
still in salary cap hell. They got a new coach.
They botched their first round pick last year. Frank Nilikina
porzingis always hurt walking injury, and they have terrible contracts
on the books. If you're the Brooklyn Nets, you are
now more attractive than the Knicks. And next summer, Hello Brooklyn.
(01:40:42):
Anybody anybody's want to partner up and come and play
in Brooklyn next year? Well, Kyrie Irving, different dude, the
only guy that we know of who's willingly walked away
from Lebron, could walk away from Boss the next summer.
Now I know Boston, obviously he looked good. Kyrie was
(01:41:04):
an m VP candidate for parts of the season. But
as I said, different dude clearly wants to be the star,
wants to be the guy. He wasn't the guy when
Lebron showed up in Boston. Now is he gonna be cool?
Sharing duties with Gordon Ayward, Jason Tatum, Brad Stevens. And
I'm not saying Kyrie wants out of Boston, but without
(01:41:26):
a doubt, these Celtics could lose him. I'm not saying
he wants out, but if Kyrie wants to be the guy,
the Brooklyn Nets will open up. Hey, Kyrie, come on down,
no sleep time, Kyrie, would you like to bring a friend.
(01:41:50):
Oh well, yeah, there's a guy who I'm boys with
from USA basketball. His name's Jimmy Butler. He's not having
the best time in Minnesota. Uh, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving,
Brooklyn Nets. Give me a percentage chance of this actually happening.
(01:42:11):
And again, if somebody had asked you last summer, if
Chris Paul and James Harden could team up in Houston,
you would have laughed at that too. Nick, percentage chance
Kyrie and Jimmy Butler in Brooklyn next summer. Come on, Boston,
why would they Why they should They should have went
(01:42:33):
to the finals with what they had. Why would they
try to mess up? Nick to their best players were hurt?
No no, no, no, no no no. That you're looking
at it the wrong way. It's not a Boston wouldn't
be dumping him. He would be saying, I want to
be my own guy. He walked away from Lebron, but
you get that. But you wouldn't understand him leaving the Celtics.
Why would he want to? I don't know. I listen,
(01:42:55):
we said, um Kawai Leonard's the most unknowable athlete and sport.
Kyrie Irving is pushing a movie this summer, flat earth
nonsense leaves lebron. I don't know if I understand Kyrie
Irving if he wants a title, I don't know that
he already has a title, right but right, but come on,
(01:43:17):
if he wants to be his own guy, he's the
man in Boston. No, he's not. Really. Kyrie is a
man there when he when he's healthy. Absolutely, a white
city has the one white star in the NBA Celtics
on the Celtics. So Hayward, Hayward is more popular than
I don't know. I don't know about Jerseys. I mean,
Kyrie is immensely popular. But I'll tell you Gordon Hayward
(01:43:37):
is gonna be super popular in Boston. And Brad Stevens,
You're going on a different angle here, But I mean,
I don't Brad Stevens, Jayson Tatum, I I just I
don't know. Maybe they want to build and not have
a star on Alpha and I just I don't know.
Rob alright, chime in Kyrie and Jimmy Butler. Percent chance
in Brooklyn next summer percent chance? I will ay because
(01:44:01):
I have the same source as you do. So this
is interesting to talk about. Hey, we well, we talked
about it on Thursday. If you recall what's going on
with Jimmy Butler, what's going on with Carrie Irving. Okay, yeah,
oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. That's higher than me. I
was gonna say thirty three guys want to play with
(01:44:21):
their buddies. I'm not saying Kyrie doesn't like the Celtics.
I just think if you can get the opportunity to
go and have your team and you can play with
one of your best buddies outside New York City, Kyrie's
from Jersey, so he's basically going home to me get
the keys to the Brooklyn franchise. By the way, I'm
gonna say this, the Brooklyn Nets had a pretty good
(01:44:45):
season there. The reason the Calves didn't have that Nets pick,
that's a good one because the Nets one more games
than they should have. Uh. This is a team I
don't want to say that they're on the up and up,
but Kenny Atkinson is considered a really good young coach
in this league. They you know, they don't have a
lot of good players there, but Kenny Atkinson spent a
(01:45:05):
lot of time overseas, spent time in Atlanta when that
team was rising winning sixty games. I'm not going nuts here,
I really I would say thirty three percent chance. Kyrie
and Jimmy Butler joined forces next year in Brooklyn, Alright,
coming up next year on the Big Lead, Fox Sports Radio.
The season is over before it begins for one NFL team,
(01:45:26):
and for once, it ain't the Browns. I'll tell you
who that is next. But let's first let's go to
Isaac Lowenkron for the latest in sports. Jason at the
World Cup right now, Mexico leads South Korea to nothing
in the seventy fourth minute. They scored first in the
twenty six minute on a Carlos Vella penalty kick, and
then in the sixty six minutes. You say, Jorge Perez Navarro,
(01:46:21):
the call on foxes chez Rito's fiftieth career international goal
game Mexico or to nothing lead over South Korea. They
are now in the seventy fifth minute. Earlier, Eden his
Ard and Romelu Lukaku scored two goals a piece in
Belgium's five to win over Tunisia. And coming up at
two pm Eastern on Fox, defending World Cup champion Germany
(01:46:41):
takes on Sweden. Jason, let's go back to you. Thank you,
Isaac back here on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio.
So I guess they're putting the odds to win the
NBA title out now, and um, the Warriors are obviously favorites.
(01:47:02):
Lakers still a ton of value. Attend to one. Lakers,
Sixers tend to one, Calves twelve to one. That would
you might have liked the money on fire if you're
betting on the Calves to win the title next year.
I mean, jeez, that's insanity. Um. You know, we're finally
getting back to some NFL talk. Unfortunately it's not really
(01:47:23):
good NFL talk because of what happened. Um, but you know,
the Tampa Bay Bucks are done their toasts. Their season
is over. And I hate to say it, but I
do believe their coach is gonna be fired and I
think their GM is about to get canned. And it's
all because Jamis Winston got drunk and did something stupid
(01:47:46):
in ten and I you know, listen, I'm not gonna
sit here and defend Jamis Winston at all. He's a
bit of a dope. He's done a lot of dumb things,
but an uber ride in ten and now here he's
getting suspended for three games. Like, something just strikes me is,
(01:48:09):
why do we need two years for that thing to
go down? Why couldn't they make this a lot earlier.
I mean, heck, if you're Tampa Bay, the Bucks just
extended Jamis got his fifth year. They picked up that
option twenty million bucks. Do you think if they thought
he was gonna get suspended? I mean, basically, what Jameis
(01:48:30):
Winston lied to the Bucks, the NFL, everybody, and I
don't want to go deep into the story. It's it's
it's ugly, but he essentially was so hammered at some
club that him and two buddies, and the buddies were
his buddies, were criminals, like really dumb morons. One of
them is now in jail for prison, not jail, prison
(01:48:52):
for aggravated rape. And the other guy, who's another NFL player,
was actually involved with Winston the night of that fs
YOU incident. So Jameis Winston running with a bad crowd,
making bad decisions. Now he was only twenty two at
the time, he's not twenty four, but you know, Winston
(01:49:13):
was so hammered when they get out of this club,
him and the two dudes. His buddies were like, you
get your own uber, we don't want to be around you.
So he gets in the other uber and allegedly gropes
his woman. Now, the woman did not file criminal or
civil complaints against Winston. She just kinda you know, said it.
I guess to the league. Uh put it out there,
(01:49:34):
and um Winston is now suspended for three games. So
the immortal Ryan Fitzpatrick, thirty five year old journeyman former
Jets quarterback. Oh God, don't remind me. Um, he's gonna
be the fill in. And there is zero chance that
the Bucks beat the Saints, Eagles, and Steelers to start
the season. Hey hey, NFL, how are you gonna do
(01:49:58):
the Bucks dirty? Like that? They went? They were awful
last year and you opened the season against three division winners.
Their season's over. It's over, it's done. And I earlier
in the show, I counted up the team's better than
the Bucks in the NFC. Are you ready? The Eagles
obviously coming off the Super Bowl, they have Carson Wentz,
(01:50:20):
Cowboys healthy Zeke non suspended Zeke. They'll be better Vikings
zad Kirk Cousins after they went thirteen and three, they're better.
Packers are there, and Rodgers are better, Saints are better, Panthers,
Falcons all better. So now you get up to seven.
The Rams are loaded, the forty Niners have Jimmy g
that's nine teams, folks. I didn't even mention the Seattle
(01:50:44):
Seahawks with Russell Wilson, so that's ten. And and I'm
not allowed to do this because I'm a Jets fan,
but Eli Manning with a healthy Odell Beckham and a
healthy Sea Kwon Barkley, they're gonna surprise some people this year.
They also improved or defense. I mean, I don't think
they're gonna be awful. I don't think they're gonna be great.
(01:51:05):
I think you know they're gonna seven and nine, eight
and eight, nine and seven, and you know there's probably
not gonna be good enough in the NFC. But they're
gonna scare some people. And that's not even mentioning a
Redskins team which has added Alex Smith, who again I
don't love Alex Smith, but he's not awful. He's not
a terrible quarterback. He's accomplished more than Jamis Winston, that's
(01:51:26):
for sure. So Bucks season over and I was looking
at the coach. So this will be if they fired
Dirt Cutter after this year, that Jamis will have his
third coach in five years. And the GM, by the way,
so I'm looking at it the GM. Jason liked. Jason
licked to believe like he's going to his fifth year.
So he made some great draft picks. Mike Evans, Kwan,
(01:51:49):
Alexander O. J. Howard was a nice pickup. But you
know what, he's never gonna live down trading up to
draft a kicker in the second round. Roberto Aguayo. Dude,
you can't survive that when Aguayo can't make it into
his second year with the team. Yeah, that's true. They
traded up for Roberto Aguayo. He got cut in the
(01:52:11):
preseason of year two. I mean, the Bucks are a
train wreck. What an embarrassment. And now you've got your
franchise quarterback, the face of your franchise, who had a
sexual assault allegation against him in college. Yes, still took
him number one over Mariota and now he's getting suspended
(01:52:33):
three games for alleged groping of an uber driver. Dude,
Jamis Winston is a train wreck, man. You know what,
I almost. I shouldn't take glee and the misfortune of others,
but I kind of want. Uh My, my guy at
Old Takes exposed to pull up all the times I
said I would take Mariota over Winston. Mariota got to
(01:52:56):
the playoffs last year. Now, I'll say this, the Titans
playing a joke of a conference. It's really bad. But
if you're Jamis Winston, uh you know, I know you've
got that fifth year picked up. You got to prove
some stuff here over the next two years. Even if
you guys aren't getting to the playoffs next year and
again the division's brutal Jamis needs to show out. He
(01:53:19):
needs like a forty yards season. You know, give me
forty TVs. Keep the interceptions low, stop with the eating
the w nonsense, be like a real leader. Jamis Winston
is more clown than leader at this point in his career. Alright,
coming up next year on the Big Lead Fox Sports Radio,
We're gonna wrap up the show with a little NBA
(01:53:41):
draft banter, a little NBA free agency, and I guess
my final thoughts on why I still want to trade
Lonzo Ball. That's next back here on the Big Lead
Fox Sports Radio, great news. No Mexico didn't score again.
There's a quick way you could save money. Switch to Geico.
(01:54:03):
Got a Geico dot com and in fifteen minutes you
could say or more on car insurance. I had a
good chat during the commercial break with the immortal Steve Hartman.
He is hosting the show coming up next here on
Fox Sports Radio with Brady Papinga. Um, we were just
(01:54:27):
talking Lakers first. So I think most of us agree
out there that Kauai Laron wants out. Does he want
just l A or does he want specifically Lakers. And
I was telling you guys early in the show that
what I'm seeing with this Paul George may stay is
that's Paul George's way of saying, I want to max
(01:54:49):
deal Lakers. Don't try to short change me because you
want to go after Kauai or Chris Paul. Because again,
when the Miami Heat got Bosh, Wade and Lebron, all
three of those guys did not get Max steels. They
had to take a pay cut. So you you see
what Paul George is seeing. Listen, don't try to do
(01:55:10):
me like that. I won't go I want the max.
So if it's Lebron and Paul George to the Lakers,
it can be the max. If it's Lebron, Paul George Kauai,
Paul George is gonna have to take less money. That's
that's that's how it's gonna break down. Now, the second
layer of this is okay, fine, Hypothetically, let's say the
(01:55:33):
Lakers are getting Kauai, Well, how are they getting Quais
And that's the problem with the Lakers. Fans just can't
stop debating because allegedly, allegedly, the Spurs don't want a
Lonzo Ball. Allegedly, the Spurs want Kuzmin Ingram. Now, if
you're the Lakers, you want a Lonzo Gone, not Kuzman Ingram,
(01:55:57):
because you want LaVar Ball shipped on a tra rain
as far away from here as you can get him.
I like Alonzo as a player. I think his dad
is a nuisance who's just gonna continue to drive a
wedge between everybody in the franchise. I'm telling you I
(01:56:17):
heard from someone Julius Randall got in Alonzo's face early
this season, asking why his dad's talking sideways about him
like this is a long term the same good so
magic Genie Buss if you're listening out there on this
lovely Saturday morning in l A, figure out a way
to keep Kuzman ingram and unload a Lonzo. And again,
(01:56:41):
I don't want to go over this distract stuff again,
but I'm telling you, man that give I gave Cowherd credit.
That was a rare good call by Colin Cowherd. The
disk track is something. It's not nothing, it's not everything,
but it's definitely something. And if you notice, uh, have
you guys been on social media lately? Are you going
on Instagram? Yeah, you don't see any trash talking. Have
(01:57:02):
you noticed Alonzo and Kuzma have kind of cleaned up
their act. The only thing I've heard from Kuzma was
something some l A l A writer put out that
Kuzma is essentially doing not two of days but three
a days. He's living at the Lakers facility. Now huh,
well that's good. He's not living on Instagram doing nonsense.
(01:57:24):
And Alonzo ball what have you heard about him? Oh?
Just so happens that Alonzo is like working out like
a machine, not on the basketball court, um, but I
mean he looks like he's added like ten pounds of
muscle and I wouldn't call him jacked. Uh, Nick, you've
you've seen the photo. I'm talking about a Lonzo on
the beach. He's like flexing, he's looking like he added
(01:57:44):
ten or fifteen pounds. Well, I'll say this, it's a
lot easier to add ten or fifteen pounds a muscle
at twenty than it is thirty. And you're skinny, and
when you're skinny, yeah, I was always skinny. You know,
I've been tempted. So me and my buddy, one of
my buddies his pair, it would ah. Oh, that is
an amazing goal. Wow, sorry to interrupt. Korea is on
(01:58:06):
the board. Minute a laser from the left foot. Now
there's about three minutes of stoppage time left. Um, Mexico's
in control up to one. But it might be worth
flipping on Fox while you're listening to the radio show. Uh.
Just awesome goal, left footed outside the penalty box into
the corner. Beautiful placement. Um. You know, it's a lot
(01:58:30):
easier for Alonzo to gain weight in his at twenty
and get muscled than it is at thirty. And the
dad's out there know what I'm talking about. Um, I
got a picture my buddy his parents would always go
away in the summer for like an annual trip, and
we did. He'd have a keg party at his house,
so we would annually do a picture of us shirtless,
acting like we're cool, you know, and it's just so funny, my,
(01:58:53):
you know, from the first one to like the third one.
You know, when you're in college, you can at you
take creatine and if like every day because you know
you're skipping classes to go play basketball. Um, but yeah,
a Lonzo should be gaining weight. He's getting muscled around
by Patrick Beverley. I'll never forget that in his first
NBA game, he's getting pushed off the ball. Come on, dude,
but he's getting stronger. I would give up Lonzo. I
(01:59:17):
just like Kuzma a lot. I think. I think Ingram's
barely scratching the surface. I think the move is you
gotta get a third team involved. Now guys are pushing
his stuff to me on Twitter and Instagram, saying, heyyy Charlotte, Charlotte.
Come on, you know, did Charlotte draft a point guard?
I don't think so. I think they got Miles Bridges, right, um, Rob, Yeah,
(01:59:42):
it's Bridges. They got Miles Bridges, So they got Kemba
who's only got one year left. Michael Jordan knows business.
You don't know basketball building a roster, but he knows business. Um,
bringing Alonzo you sell some seals, some tickets. I think
the Phoenix Suns could use a point guard. They didn't
draft one. So think if you could somehow get the
Sons or the Hornets to be the third team in
(02:00:05):
the deal with the Spurs, then you get the best
of both worlds. You were able to unload Lonzo. You
have to part with Kuzma or Ingram, but not both, Rob,
Is that too much of a pipe dream? No, not
at all. And I mean because you know where we work.
We do have some sources in in in the biz,
particularly around the Lakers to being in Los Angeles, and
you and I have both been told that the Lakers
(02:00:26):
have backed off their stance about you know, unavailable, Brandon
Ingram being unavailable. They're all on the table. They're all
on the table at this point. And I've been told,
and I've told you this, the one guy that they
actually prefer not to deal is Kyle Kuzma. You would
have ever thought that twelve months ago. What's interesting is that,
and I talked about this about the draft. What what?
(02:00:49):
A lot of these teams are targeting young guys with upside.
That's fine, and most of them won't be able to
contribute immediately. Not They're not like Jayson Tatum. The guys
who started for you know, two years, we're in a
program for three years or in a weight training program.
Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart impact players again. Josh Hart averaged
fifteen a game after the All Star Break. Now, I
(02:01:11):
know that's only eleven games, and you know Lonzo was
hurt and whatever. Fifteen is fifteen on a thirty five
one team. That's not bad. So you know that the
Lakers go out and draft Moe Wagner Michigan started for
two years, played for three. They go draft v McKay
luke and I know the defense and whatever. You're laughing,
it's fine. The two year starter made a hundred fifteen
(02:01:32):
threes last year, one of the best shooters in the draft.
So I thought the Lakers had another A plus draft.
Really proud of their work. I'm also proud of our work. Here.
Another great show in the books. Thank you producer, Rob
nick Iwa Sam Isaac on the updates. Thank you to
our guests. The podcast will be up later. Enjoy your weekend.
