Speaker 2 (00:25):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Oh what is going on? Hope your early hours are
going great? Fired up to be here one more night,
one more night, milist. You got to put up with me,
but we'll make it a good one. We got Coop here,
Coops around, he's fired up. We got my girl Mary
mackin here. Our goal is to have so much fun
that Mary Mack forgets about her nagging headache. That is
(00:51):
the goal this late night here in the Fox Sports
Radio overnight hours. So let's get after it. Let's start
off with some bad news. So Anthony Richardson, Colts quarterback,
he dislocated his right pinky finger in preseason action against
the Ravens on Thursday night. So this is the Colts
(01:12):
second possession. Richardson drops back, he gets sacked and he
gets driven into the ground, unblocked linebacker David o'jabo. He
got to him. And this is how it sounded on
the Colts Radio network.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Here you go, Anthony Richardson goes out of the gunball
me here, Hash backs to throat and he is decked
from the left and he has sacked and buried. He
took a big time hit, but more importantly, hangs on
to the football and the ravens with a sack off
the left edge and he's.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Going off the field, Matt. He got hitped unobated.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
There was no one blocking the st The protection was
totally not there.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Uh, the protection was not there. He's right about that.
But what also wasn't there was the awareness, the zero
awareness from Anthony Richardson. Didn't feel the heat, didn't even
know there was heat. You gotta do a better job
recognizing the pressure. That's not just on your protection, that's
also on the quarterback. And it's the same old song
(02:12):
and dance with Anthony Richardson. He was the fourth overall
pick just two years ago and it's been a disaster.
And this is the thing. If we zoom out for
a second, you ever have a friend who's just in
a bad relationship. We've all had that right where it's
just your buddy is just arguing with his girl constantly,
(02:35):
and you either think or say, like, man, they're just
not good together, like they need to be away from
each other. That's how I feel about Anthony Richardson and
the Colts. Not that they're arguing all the time, but
they're just bad for each other. If you look at
the Colts, how are the Colts bad for Anthony Richardson. Well,
they rushed him on the field as a Week one
(02:56):
starter his rookie season. He was no near ready to
start in the NFL. This guy had fewer than four
hundred passing attempts in college at Florida. Under four hundred attempts.
That's a guy who needs seasoning. That's a guy who
needs to be brought along slowly, Get a ton of reps,
(03:18):
digest the playbook, folly. He needs the red shirt his
first year in the NFL. His rookie year should have
been a red shirt year. He would have been way
better off not seeing the field. But the Colts not
only got him on the field, they rushed him out
there in Week one. What blows my mind is if
you compare Anthony Richardson to a couple of quarterbacks. One,
(03:40):
let's start with who I think is the best quarterback
in the game right now, it's still Patrick Mahomes. If
you look at Mahomes in college, Mahomes through thirteen hundred
and forty nine passes in college, Anthony Richardson through three
ninety three. Mahomes attempted almost a thousand more passes in
(04:02):
college than Anthony Richardson does. It's a lot of reps,
that's a lot of learning on the job, that's a
lot of seasoning. You just didn't have that with Anthony Richardson.
And then if you'd take the comparison further, what happened
with both of those quarterbacks their rookie year. Mahomes sat
almost the entire year. He had one start at the
(04:23):
very end of the regular season against Coops Broncos. That
was it one start. So Mahomes started one game as
a rookie. Anthony Richardson started Week one as a rookie
with a portion of the experience that Mahomes had in college.
Made no sense. The Colts had no patience whatsoever. Put
(04:44):
them in a terrible spot. The Colts that you ever
have like you ever have a dog and you put
a treat like at the end of his nose and
the dog sitting there for a few seconds, just kind
of like looking at it, crosssied like, oh man, I
can only do this for a few secs. You realize that, right,
And those evil owners are like wait, wait, wait, fight,
oh not yet, not wait, and the dog's like, oh man,
(05:07):
I can't take it any That's the Colts. The Colts
are the dog with a treat at the end of
its nose and they're like, hey, I get and we
just got to start Anthony Richardson that and they threw
him out there and it was a disaster. Now where
Anthony Richardson is bad for the Colts, you can't put
this just on the Colts. Anthony Richardson has been freaking
(05:28):
brutal and even though he got thrown out there before
I think he was ready and the Colts did a
disservice to him, He's done a disservice to the Colts
as well. He's been atrocious. And not only are his numbers,
I mean like a carbon copy of Tim Tebow's quarterback
numbers in the NFL. By the way, that is someone
(05:49):
you do not want to have carbon copy numbers with
that would be Tim Tebow. You want numbers that are
way better than that. I'm telling you. It's the Spider
Man meme where the two guys are pointing at each other.
That's the stat lines in the NFL of Anthony Richardson
and Tim Tebow. They are so similar it's staggering and
(06:10):
so like. Anthony Richardson has been that bad as a quarterback.
And not only has it been unproductive, he's been banged
up all the time. He's missed seventeen games in his
first two seasons. Think about that. They play seventeen games
a season. That's thirty four games in two years. He's
missed seventeen of them. He's missed half the games due
(06:32):
to injury. So he's banged up, he's unproductive, and he
tapped out. He tapped out last season because he was tired.
What have you heard that in the NFL A quarterback
was tired and was like, yeah, I need out of
the game. Everyone's like, what what do you mean you? Uh? Okay,
(06:54):
he tapped out of the game because he was tired.
So he's done a disservice to the Colts as well.
He's been bad, he's been banged up, he's tapped out,
and the Colts threw him out there way before he
was ready. They are just horrible for each other, and
unfortunately he got banged up this located right pinky finger.
Obviously he is throwing hand and he's gonna be out
(07:16):
for a little bit of time. He wanted to get
back out there. He tried to regrip the football in
the sidelines. Wasn't working. They showed it on the on
the replay. It's like, you know, his hand is facing
north and his pinky is going a sharp east. You
know that's never a good sign, not good at all.
But it's another, you know, huge speed bump, another huge
(07:38):
hurdle in the on the path of Anthony Richardson being
a serviceable NFL quarterback. Like even before what happened on
Thursday with the injury, he there were reports out of
Colts camp. You know, James Boyd covers the Colts for
the Athletic and he's like, hey, this guy, Daniel Jones,
he's got a good shot to start Week one. He's
(07:58):
been the more consistent core back thus far. Again, you
don't want to be neck and neck with Daniel Jones,
who's been a complete disappointment in his NFL career, who
has much more experience than Anthony Richardson. But you want
to be further along than that guy. You want to
flash more in training camp. The Colts put it this way.
(08:18):
They want their number four overall pick to flash more
than Daniel Jones, who's been a total disappointment and who
they signed on the cheap in a one year deal.
They want Anthony Richardson to be the guy. They've done
everything they can for him to be the guy, and
it's just not working out. Man, it's not happening. The
(08:39):
stats I mentioned between Anthony Richardson and Tebow, I'm not
going to bombard you with stats galore, but it's crazy.
So Anthony Richardson his record eight and seven in the NFL.
Tebow is eight and six in the NFL. Anthony Richardson,
Anthony Richardson has completed three more passes. Tebow had thirteen
(09:01):
more attempts. That's about as close as you can get
completion percentage very similar. Tebow threw for thirty one more
yards think over the course of like fifteen versus fourteen
starts plus thirty one for Tebow. Tebou had six more
touchdown passes four fewer interceptions. So advantage Tebow there, Tim Tebow.
(09:24):
Remember Tebo as a quarterback? Yeah, that guy plus seven
point five in passer rating. Tebo's passer rating career wise
in the NFL seven point five points better than Richardson,
and Tebow ran the ball more. He rushed for over
three hundred and fifty more yards than Anthony Richardson and
about the same number of starts. So it's like Tim
(09:46):
Tebow has outplayed Anthony Richardson in the NFL. That's astoundingly bad.
I wish I had better news for you Colts fans,
but that's where you are. Man Like, one preseason game
in and this is the reality is Richardson is hurt again,
and now we're looking at Danny Dimes as the more
(10:07):
probable Week one starter. How are you supposed to be
fired up for that? Now, one other thing I will
mention here, and this doesn't just apply to the Colts,
but this applies to a lot of NFL teams in
the preseason. Something else that the Colts did. They were
playing with fire in this game. So they put Anthony
Richardson out there. They gave him the start. They didn't
(10:29):
start the offensive line Anthony Richardson. Before this injury, he
at least had a shot to be the Week one starter.
And the Colts are like, yeah, let's rest the veteran
offensive lineman. You didn't have the left tackle in there,
Bernard Reyman. You didn't have the right tackle in there,
Braden Smith, you didn't have the left guarden there. Quinton Nelson.
(10:51):
You're playing with fire. If you're gonna put a quarterback
behind center who might be your Week one starter, and
you don't have starting offensive linemen out there, that is
absolutely playing with fire. And hey man, it cost the Colts.
And I wouldn't just say the injury occurred because you
(11:13):
had the backup right tackle in there. If anything, the
running back was supposed to pick the guy up. You like,
the tight end just ran a pattern and you had
the Ravens linebacker just scraped on that side of the
ball and no one blocked him at all. So it
is a complete mix up by the protection. But also
(11:34):
Anthony Richardson, you gotta be more aware. You got to
recognize what's going on. I understand there are gonna be
some breakdowns and protection and those sorts of things will happen,
but Anthony Richardson hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt.
You know, if Mahomes just doesn't see a blitz coming,
it's like, Okay, that doesn't happen all the time. But
(11:55):
when you've seen a steady diet of Anthony Richardson holding
onto the ball too long, you know, misques galore not
recognizing the pressure or the blitz. He hasn't earned the
benefit of the doubt. Gotta be way more aware than
he is. But it's just a matter of time. The
Colts are gonna move on from him. It's a complete waste.
(12:15):
They spent a top ten pick, top five pick on
Richardson and they were morons. Yeah, I can't put this
only on Anthony Richardson to trot him out there in
Week one. It's just like, you guys got to have
a better long term approach than that. I just think
they set them up for failure. Now, there are some
quarterbacks that honestly are set up for failure. They're thrown
(12:39):
out there before they're ready. And some quarterbacks are good
enough to overcome that. And Anthony Richardson just isn't. He
hasn't had enough experience, didn't get enough reps in college,
so he couldn't be thrown out there before he was ready.
The Colts did it, and now they're in this spot.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
Man.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
They don't have a quarterback for the now or the future.
That's where they're at now. Coming up next, it's not
all bad news. Some good news from Thursday at least.
I think this is good news, a new approach that
makes all the sense in the world. I'll get to
that coming up. I'm Brian noo In for Big Ben
Mallor hang with us right here on Fox Sports Radio.

I'm Brian though in a big Ben Mellard, this is
Fox Sports Radio. My girl Mary Matt coming out of
the gates pretty strong over here. I like this, thanks now, Mary,
I'm not familiar. It almost sounds like wrestling intro music, right,
like with the the little drop right before it started.
(14:20):
What's going on with this over here? The edge? It
is the edge? Yeah, that's as walking music. Oh that
like that? You think you know me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I got you now. Very nice to bring it back
to the old days, yeah, my old days.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I always gotta can I keep the hard rock, keep
the metal going. Absolutely gotta do that. By the way,
I did a terrible job of, you know, giving you
a little sneak peekause some of the things on the
show tonight. So a couple of the things I've got
my uh my eye on. I want to do this
at a couple of points during the show. Every single year,
(14:59):
I think about what will be the biggest curveball of
the NFL season, right, Like, what's gonna be the biggest
curveball the teams that we think are gonna be good,
maybe one of them is bad, and vice versa, a
team that we think, oh, they're gonna suck, and they
were like, wow, what the last year, the biggest curveball
was the Washington Commanders. They were coming off a four
(15:21):
win season. They drafted Jaydon Daniels and then boom, they
win twelve games and they go to the NFC Championship Game.
Nobody predicted that, Like the Jim Harbor nobody, no one
had that one. And every single year I just I'll
stare at the standings from last year and I'm like,
(15:43):
what's the biggest curveball this season? So we'll get to
that a little bit later tonight. Also, I think there's
a bet that my guy Coop should be making, but
understandably will not be making. We'll get to that. Also,
is a great anti Coleslaw tweet I have to share
with you. I thought it was fantastic, top shelf, you know,
talking trash about Coleslaw. I'm on board. So you have
(16:06):
that to look forward to. Why would you leave? Why
would you leave? At this point? By the way, it
is time right now for the tire rack Play of
the day.
Speaker 7 (16:14):
Burrow waiting for the shotgun snap two x two formation,
looks left, throws left, cock By Chase escapes the tackle,
racing down the sideline, touchdown. Nice Bengals Chamar Chase picking
up where he left off last year.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Yeah right, no kidd in triple crown winner Jamar Chase.
That was complements of seven hundred WLW Bengals radio network.
For over forty years, tire Rack has been helping customers
find the right tires for how, what and where they drive,
shipped fast and free back by, free road hazard protection,
with convenient installation options like mobile tire installation, tire rack
dot Com the way tire buying should be. I want
(16:55):
to dive into the Bengals in a second. But another
thing that I did a horrible job of the militia.
How theare I'm trying to They call it like clock integrity,
like you gotta take, you know, breaks at certain times.
I'm trying to be all about clock integrity. I didn't
throw out the number, I didn't throw out my Twitter
handled nothing, So I don't take that as a slight militia.
(17:15):
I love hearing from you guys. We'll roll out the
red carpet. You got any thoughts to share, any contributions
to make hit us up eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox eight seven seven ninety nine six six three six',
nine also on X you can tweet me at the
No show if you would like to do. So, now
one thing THAT i loved From thursday. Night that would
(17:38):
be The bengals playing a lot of starters in the preseason.
Game you just heard the touchdown throw From Joe burrow
To Jamar. Chase they got real playing time Against philadelphia
On thursday. Night AND i spent a little bit of
time on this last, Night SO i won't repeat, everything
But i'll give you the Cliffs notes. VERSION i think
this makes all the sense in the world for The.
(18:01):
BENGALS i think it makes a lot of sense for
a lot of teams to get their starters some, reps
some teams that have young, players you, know maybe a
prominent player LIKE jj McCarthy with The, VIKINGS i think
it makes sense to get him out, there get him some.
Reps in a game like. Situation didn't play one snap
in the regular season last. YEAR i think it makes
(18:22):
sense to get him out. There if you look At Joe,
burrow even though he had an amazing. Season another slow
start For Joe burrow and The. Bengals week one last,
year they're big favorites at home against The. Patriots remember
a lot of people thought The patriots would be the
worst team last. Season they only won four. Games, well
(18:43):
one of them was In week one on the road
against The. Bengals they've started so, slowly so, consistently and
so it makes sense to Get Joe burrow out, there
get your starters out, there try to establish a. Rhythm
if you look at The bengals, schedule it's favorable to
start the. Season they're at The browns and then they Host.
(19:05):
Jacksonville but then three of their next four games are
on the. Road they're at The, vikings At Coops, broncos
they host The, lions and then they're at The. Packers
three of those four games are on the, road and
all four of those games are challenging. Games so you
can't afford to start off. Slowly you can't start off
(19:26):
zero to two or one in. One you gotta sweep
those two. Games if you're at The browns and at
home against The, jags you should win those. Games if
you're The, bengals and if you think about last season,
again they lost to The. Patriots this has been a
growing trend with The bengals for a long time. Now Joe,
burrow as special as he is as AN nfl, quarterback
(19:50):
his record over weeks one in. Two in HIS nfl,
career it's one in. Nine his record is one in.
Nine and they faced some bum teams as, well like
last Year's patriots In week, one and they'll lose games at.
Home they'll lose to teams they shouldn't lose. Too they've
been notorious slow. Starters so instead of Using september as
(20:16):
the new, preseason how about use the preseason as the.
Preseason that's what The bengals are. Doing they've made an.
ADJUSTMENT i love. IT i think it makes a lot
of sense for. Them And burrow looked. Great he was
nine for, ten one hundred and twenty three, yards two,
touchdowns no, picks nearly perfect passer. Rating it was one
(20:36):
fifty seven point. Five it's pretty, good pretty, good about
as good as you can. Do AND i think that
puts The bengals in a better position to start, faster because,
again you can't afford to start. Slowly imagine if They
PROBABLY i can't imagine them losing At. Cleveland that's hard to.
(20:57):
Foresee it is a divisional. Game that's hard to see
a loss right. There but, again crazier things have happened
with The. Bengals but let's say they start off slowly,
again they're not playing their guys in. Preseason another slow.
Start they lose a game at home To. Jacksonville they're
one and, one and then they're at The, vikings at The,
bengals at The Broncos, lions and then at The. Packers it's, Like,
(21:21):
holy all of a, sudden you're looking at sub five
hundred real. Quickly you want to avoid.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
That.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
ABSOLUTELY i think it makes. Sense get your Mar chase out,
there Get Yo burrow out, there get the ones out,
there let's get into a. Rhythm it's go time, here right.
Like So i'm all for. IT i think it makes
a lot of sense what The bengals are doing. Here
some other teams they're trotting out well known. Guys arizona
is throwing out A Kyler. Murray he's gonna get some preseason.
(21:48):
Reps Cam, ward the number one overall, pick makes all
the sense in the world for him to get out.
There think about this With. Burrow i'll throw one more
number out at you and then we'll get to the. Calls.
Here Before thursday night's preseason, game where The bengals were
playing The, Eagles Joe burrow had only thrown eight preseason
(22:10):
passes in his five year. Career he threw ten On Thursday.
Night he threw more preseason passes On Thursday night than
his previous five years in THE. Nfl he only had
fifteen snaps total in his preseason career Before Thursday. Night
SO i think it makes, sense BUT i have to dig.
(22:32):
Up i'm kind of Curious Joe burrow's, numbers and they
couldn't been. Good it was a low scoring game against
The patriots last. YEAR i, SAID i was only going
to give you one. Number So i'm looking up numbers
on the. Fly i'm a compulsive liar over. Here i'm
just addicted to. Numbers i'm, like, oh more numbers. Here, yeah,
okay Here's Joe. Burrow not, terrible but twenty one for twenty.
(22:55):
Nine good completion percentage about seventy two percent in sixty four,
yards no, touchdowns no. Picks that was his stat Line week,
one last year against The, patriots again A patriots team
many thought would be the worst in the. League they
only won four games and that was let me see real,
(23:15):
fast that was the lowest amount of yards That burrow
threw four in any game last. Season there's only one
other game where he was under two hundred yards. Passing
SO i don't think it's a coincidence that him playing
the preseason at. All and, wow what do you, know
slow start yet, Again let's change, that you, know let's change,
(23:36):
it move in a different. Direction The, bengals by the,
way they started off one in. Four they lost for
their first five, games SO i like this change in their.
Approach like. It i'm a. Fan all, right let's go
out to the. Militia let's get out some calls. Here
mike is In, texas has some preseason. Thoughts what's going, On,
Mike you're On Fox Sports.
Speaker 8 (23:56):
Radio how are you?
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Good?
Speaker 5 (23:59):
BUDE i think the, preseason.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
Like non starters starting in pre season is cool to
thegaesst fantasy players a chance to look, at you, know
other players that you know they've been pat mahowns might
be falling, off so it gives them a chance to
look at them to the quarterbacks to Get but as
far as like a business standpoint and a team LIKE
i think you should start at least your starters for
(24:26):
one or two sets at the beginning of the first
preseason game and see how they. Do because a lot
of teams are just they're they're resting their starters for
three weeks and then expect them to be ready to
go week one of the regular, seasons and we find
out a bunch of dudes they're getting hurt and all.
THAT i think that Seeing Joe burrow And Jamar chase connecting,
(24:47):
early especially in preseason week, one is a good sign
for The bengals that, hey these dudes is left off
right where they picked up or picked up right where
they left.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Off yeah now. Here, YEAH i appreciate you checking. In
it's it's one of these. Things it just makes me
think about what preseason has turned. Into it's just become
very trendy to not play your ones in. PRESEASON a
lot of teams followed. That there was a, time you,
know a little while ago where McVeigh was the first
guy to do, this and it's, like, wow that's a little.
(25:18):
Different he's not playing any of his. Starters like at
first it was maybe a, guy it might have been their,
quarterback he's not going to, play and then now it
was a lot of, guys we're not going to play
the entire. Preseason and it's just become a growing. Trend
and the, Thing i'll, say real, fast we'll get right
back out to the. Calls but the thing it makes
me think, OF i get, it but it's blown out of.
(25:40):
Proportion there have been over the years some injuries to
some prominent, players right they've gone down. Early maybe it's
a top draft pick gets. HURT jj McCarthy got hurt last,
year top ten, pick got hurt in the preseason. Game
didn't play a regular season game all year because of that.
Injury and they turned into like was that really? Necessary
(26:01):
did you really need to get him out? There was
it gonna make that big of a. Difference that's how
it's looked, at WHICH i, get BUT i think it's
just blown out of. PROPORTION i think you could play
that game with. Anything it's not just preseason. Games it's joint,
practices it's training camp. Practices it's Like Rashaun slater of The,
chargers their left, tackle he got hurt in practice On.
(26:24):
Thursday no one's gonna be, like why was he? Practicing it's,
like what do you? Mean because he has to. Go
he gotta, practice you gotta ramp up to the, season
you gotta get in football, shape you gotta HIT i,
mean you gotta get. Ready and for whatever, reason it's
just turned into the preseason is the only thing that
a lot of people circle and, say so why did
(26:47):
he need to be out? There did this injury even
need to take? Place that's the way it's thought about
quite a. Bit but they don't say that about training camp.
Practices they don't say that about joint you, know practice
IS i just don't know why it's looked at so much.
DIFFERENTLY i just look at all of it as one
(27:07):
big group of ramping up toward the regular, season right, like,
yeah preseason game is a bit of a dress. Rehearsal
at least it's a game like game ish, situation, right
so that helps. YOU a lot of teams use that
as a step to get ready for the regular. Season
and NOW i don't know why it's looked at as
(27:29):
something completely different than joint practices or training camp. PRACTICES
i think it's just another way to get ready if
you so. Choose let me get to dre my, Guy
Andre is In. Massachusetts what's going?
Speaker 2 (27:42):
On?
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Andre?
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Hey how you?
Speaker 9 (27:46):
Doing thanks for taking the.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
Call we're in.
Speaker 9 (27:48):
Agreement you get better at playing football by playing, football all,
Right and a lot of times when you're worrying about,
injuries that's when the injuries. Come. Right you can hurt
yourself walking across the, street you go, down your high your,
shoe you injury your. Self. Okay so in, Football i'm
of the, mind particularly for The Cincinnati, bengals who have
a lot to. Lose, frankly you, Know Joe, BURROW mvp,
(28:08):
candidate leading individual FOR mvp. Candidate they're on the fringe
in terms of making the. Playoffs so let me tell you.
Something you know That DIVISION Afc, north all, right it's
loaded with stout defenses and The bengals don't have. One
And willis's time in and.
Speaker 7 (28:23):
On that's.
Speaker 9 (28:23):
Hee he you, know wants to See Joe burrow in the,
playoffs as DO. I, Okay, So Joe, burrow you know
you got to be out. There you got to you
got to be getting your repsence. Right and that's What
willis is. Saying you got your. Repsence that's how you're
going to get that. Edge that the, thing you, know
and they do my thing. AGAIN i just feel like it's.
Unfortunate never want to see, it as you, Noted and
(28:44):
this whole idea about why do you play the preseason,
game so on and, forth because they're important in terms
of building and establishing your. Roster AND i know in
the brave new world of analytics and saber, metrics all
these number, crunchery, well you know the percentage is a
percentage of that you look at all time. Coaches i'm
talking about The Bill parcells the, world The Bill belichicks
of the. World, okay you play in the pre you
(29:05):
have to get, ready and the veterman football players echo,
this this this. Sentiment so, Uh i'm part of you
know a lot of. Us you know the tough injury
season engine injury. Tonight you know it's. Graphic all the
rest of you you never want to see. That but
when you're playing an inherently violent, game those things are
going to. Happen it shouldn't, persuade it shouldn't dissuade teams
(29:27):
from utilizing the preseason to be. Successful so specific to The.
BENGALS i hope this is. HELPFUL i want to See
Joe burrow in the, playoffs but the odds are for
me in that in that, DIVISION i think THE Cincinnti
bengals are the odd team. Out thanks taking the.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Call yeah you got. It there he Is. Dre you,
Know drey just gets to his take and then he moves,
on which is. Fine that's how he gets. Down i'm so.
Curious what is dog's name? Is you, know what kind
of dog is? It what's the poocha's?
Speaker 2 (29:53):
Name?
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Curious he, was he was weighing. In he had preseason thoughts,
too getting him out. There, yeah, yeah, no but it's, look,
man It's i'll say. THIS i don't want to hammer
this into the, ground but when a player gets hurt
in a preseason, game it's. UNFORTUNATE i don't look at
(30:14):
it as, oh that was, unnecessary that was, Stupid like
that's the way it turns into quite a, bit AND
i just think it's. Unfortunate. MAN i think it's another
way to ramp up toward the regular. Season think about a, treadmill, Right,
like if you go to the gym and you put
the treadmill, ON i don't know nine or ten miles per.
(30:36):
Hour let's say somewhere between eight and ten miles per.
Hour you hit it, like all, right. Go it doesn't
just immediately within one second go to that, speed you
know WHAT i. Mean it slowly kind of ramps up.
There that's what training camp, is that's what joint practices,
are that's what preseason games. Are it's ramping up to
(31:00):
week one and you have to do. That like if
you think, That i'll put it this, way there's not one.
Team maybe it's The rams that they don't play their
guys mostly in the, preseason but there isn't one team
that sits their guys out of. Everything they don't sit
them out there all. Right no joint practices for, you
no preseason games for, you no training camp practices for,
(31:23):
you nothing like we just want to put you in
bubble wrap Until week one rolls. Around there isn't one
team doing. That they're all ramping up toward week, one
and the approaches differ a little. Bit some guys play
in the, preseason some guys. Don't from team to, team
but all of it is just ramping up to ward week.
(31:43):
One AND i don't know WHY i don't know. WHY
i don't want to go on a whole tangent, here
BUT i don't know why it's become so. Fashionable if
you want to expand, this like from THE nfl preseason
to load management in the, end man you talk about
embracing all facets of load, management some of these people
(32:08):
act like you're out of your. Mind you're a monster
if you think about playing your guys back to back.
GAMES i don't know why it's become this fascination with
resting and sitting games out and not playing in the
preseason as if it's all good all across the. Board
(32:29):
i'm not going to be an idiot and tell you
there aren't some. Advantages there. Are there are some advantages
to doing those, things either setting a basketball player out
resting him a game, here game. There there's some good
that comes from. That but it isn't all good all
across the. Board it just. Isn't why do you, think
(32:50):
again the treadmill, thing think about The clippers or some
of these teams that have all these injuries in the.
Playoffs why do you think that happens because they're not
using the regular season to ramp up toward the, playoffs
they're sitting out too. Much and then when they put
the treadmill on nine miles per hour or whatever the nine,
setting and they try to just jump on the treadmill
(33:12):
and keep, pace they. Can't they haven't ramped up. Enough
like that's what. Happens so this idea that it's just
all good all across the board to sit out games
in THE nba left and, Right i'm not talking just
like here, there or we're talking a decent, amount like
A Kawhi leonard. AMOUNT i just don't think it's all
(33:34):
good all across the. Board but that's what it's. Become
it's Like Tom. Thibodeau they act Like Tom thibodeau is a.
Monster he's a maniac for playing his guys huge. Minutes
AND i JUST i don't go along with.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
That.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
MAN i just don't think it helps you all across
the board to sit guys. Out there's some. Advantages it's
not nothing but a sea of, advantages no disadvantages. Whatsoever
that's not, true just not. True let me think it one.
More we got to do. One mike is In. CASEY
i just Saw mike In texas AND i Saw i'm,
(34:07):
like are we Got mike in case Different, mike what's going?
Speaker 5 (34:09):
On, Mike, Hey, brian thanks for taking a. CALL i
want to BEFORE i get to my, COMMENT i just
want to let you know that whenever you fill in For,
ben and we all Love, ben, right there is no
drop off in the show because a lot of times
you'll get a guest host and it's just not the.
Same it's there's no drop off in the in the
talent or in the conversation when you fill in For.
(34:30):
Ben so let me get that out of the way.
First that's, Cool.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
MIKE i appreciate, that, Man thank you very much for.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
That as a as a former high school and college football,
PLAYER i think THE nfl last two seasons set a
record for the amount of hamstrings and torn achilles. Injuries.
Yeah now does that coincide with when they change the
collective bargaining agreement where they don't hit in pads in
(34:57):
OTAs and they don't really go two days anymore like
they did back in the nineties and the early two,
thousands where you're not building up your stamina and your
strength and you're apt to have more. Injuries think about.
It equipment's gotten, better playing surfaces have gotten better, training weight,
rooms locker rooms have gotten. Better why are all the
(35:19):
injuries happening all of a Sudden, yeah because you're not
playing full preseason games. NOW i can make the argument
that when THE nfl schedule used to be sixteen regular
season games in four preseason you would set all your
starters out the last game because they had two and
a half games to get acclimated to routes and defensive
(35:40):
schemes and that kind of thing they didn't want to
get her before the season. Opener i'll give you that.
Argument but when you only have three preseason games now
and the possibility of it will only be in two
in the near, future going to an eighteen game schedule
Like Roger goodell wants to, do you almost have to
play your stof because it's different when you're hitting another
(36:04):
colored jersey than when you are you, know The chiefs
are just playing each. Other it's nice to Go saturday and, say,
hey we're going to play against The. Cardinals we're going
to play a different, scheme a different a different whole different.
Organization you almost have to in if you have new,
players they don't they. Won't you, know every team has
turnover nobody's the same team offensively or defensively the next. Year,
(36:27):
yeah there's always. Changes So i'm in favor, of you,
know whether It's Josh allen Or mahomes or especially People Anthony,
richardson get out there and get as many reps as you.
CAN'T i actually think it's smart That Joe, burrow you,
know through ten passes, tonight because you're, right one in
nine in his first five, years in the first two
(36:48):
weeks of the. Year they've missed the playoffs the last two.
Years brother and man as A chiefs, fan great. Bye.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (36:56):
YEAH i mean.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
We've taken care of The ravens and we've taken care
of The, bills and we've ended their season four in
the last five. Years we do not want to See
cincinnati for some. Reason they are you, know they're In,
mahomes that they're in The andy's. Head that we don't
want to see The.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Mangles, yeah no.
Speaker 5 (37:10):
Doubt, yeah that's just that's just my argument for for
the players to play in. Preseason, uh just you, know
we've had more injuries and LIKE i, said everything else is.
Better why are why are we having so many torn
achilles and hamstrings and and you, know knees and things
of that. Nature, yeah that's the POINT i wanted to.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Make for no, DOUBT i appreciate, That. Mike, yeah IT'S
i think there's absolutely a common link between that happening
with with players sitting out that that was the the.
EPIC i have to look it, up but, Uh stan
Van gundy put a tweet out there essentially saying What
mike just. Said you, know we used to practice, More
we used to have THESE nba players play more, games
(37:50):
and now that they're sitting, out we got all these hamstring,
issues we got these lower body. Issues that was the
famous kd like. Quote tweeted it and said stand spitting
And stan thought That katie, disagreed but he's, Like, STAN
i agree with, you but absolutely there's something to that for.
Sure all, right come it up. Next there's a bad
(38:12):
take that is just waiting for someone to make, it
and thankfully it hasn't been mentioned. Yet i'll tell you
about that coming. Up I'm brian though in For Big
Ben Mallor stay with us right here On Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Radio be sure to catch live editions Of The Ben
Maller show weekdays at two Am eastern eleven. Pm.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Pacific it Is Fox Sports. Radio I'm brian though in
For Big Ben. Malor So i'll try to explain this
as easily as possible because this could be kind of,
confusing But i'll try to present it in a way
where you know it at least makes. SENSE I i'm
(38:50):
surprised a bad opinion isn't floating out there right. Now
i'm surprised you haven't turned on sports radio and heard
this bad. Take, okay now let me be. Clear i'm
not making this. Take this is not my. ARGUMENT i
actually think the opposite of What i'm about to. Say
i'm just surprised someone somewhere hasn't said these. Things so
(39:14):
the story is The lions have lost one of their
players for the, Season Ennis. Rakestraw. So he was a
second round pick last. Year he's a. Cornerback it's probably
gonna get more playing time this. Season had a shoulder.
Injury he's out for the. Season he Left sunday's practice
early to be, evaluated and he had. Surgery he's, done
(39:34):
done for the. Season i'm surprised that someone somewhere hasn't
said Does Dan campbell push his guys a little too?
Much that's not my thought, again, Right this is not my,
opinion but in this day and age OF nba load,
(39:55):
management in this day and age of don't play preseason,
games it's. Evil you're you're really taking a chance. There
you're juggling steak knives by playing your guys in the.
Preseason in this day and, age aren't you a little?
Surprised think of The lions' injuries last. Year they were
a mash. Unit they had so many dudes banged up
(40:15):
out for the, season and then you get like training camp.
Injuries i'm surprised someone hasn't been, like is just The
Tom thibodeau of THE? Nfl Dan campbell with his? Grit
is there a downside to?
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Grit?
Speaker 5 (40:29):
Like i'm not.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Making that argument at. ALL i don't believe any of those.
THINGS i think it's. FOOTBALL i think it's an incredibly
violent physical, sport and injuries. Happen some years you have
really bad injury. Luck other years you're blessed with better injury.
Luck SO i don't believe those things at. All About Dan.
CAMPBELL i think he's doing a great job and it's
(40:51):
just unfortunate that there have been so many. Injuries But
i'm surprised someone somewhere hasn't just taken that and run with.
It he's the TIBs of THE nba are the tips
of THE. NFL i, mean hopefully we don't hear, that
But i'm surprised we. Haven't coming up, Next this has
gotten completely out of. Control
