(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Man, Do we have
a lot of sports to get to? John Marra saying
whos Jodell Beckham Jr? Would do a lot more playing

(00:43):
instead of talking after I game a bunch of money
before he'd ever played the show, he wouldn't talk. Huh huh. Um,
I'm gonna get to my thoughts on Monday night football,
which was a very close game. Hey, real quick, just
real quick, um, Ramos, who do you have in last

(01:06):
night's game? Football? I took the Ryan Music. Who do
you have in last night's game? That would be the Packers?
So who did I have in last night's game? You
took the forty niners? Doug? Who lost? Um? Did I
take them to win? Or did they take them to
you know? I don't quite remember. All I know is

(01:27):
you said forty Niners and they lost, And I said
Packers and they won. No, no, no, no scoreboard, Doug,
the scoreboard was. I thought the Niners would keep it
close and they did. Uh. There's a There are a
bunch of takeaways. Let me just start here with Odell
Beckham Jr. All Right, this is kind of the parenting

(01:48):
one oh one thing, the parenting one oh one thing.
I cannot believe how my child is acting, even though
this is the way they've always acted, right, m My
kids ask for two things before bed all the time.
Oh they're hungry, They're starved, they are famished. They are

(02:12):
so unbelievably hungry. I'm so hungry. You don't feed me,
and they're thirsty for water. Now they're like, look, they're
tugging into your heartstrings. Right, You're like, Man, I don't
want my kid to go to bed hungry. Like. The
saddest thing in the world are those commercials where charity

(02:32):
has these the face of these actual kids who actually
go to bed hungry. Those are not my children. My
children are well nourished, well cared for. They all have
their own, uh a bedroom and the three of them
have two bathrooms. Right, so they're doing well for themselves.

(02:55):
So here's the deal, all right, they all they still
ask for us to bring the water or can they
have a stack. And the rule is this, don't do
once which you aren't willing to do one thousand times.
That's the rule. That's for parenting one on one Ryan Music,
when you eventually get married somewhere in NAPA, hopefully on

(03:16):
her parents bill that you guys have been looking at
all these places of coming in like two years. Don't
do once which you aren't willing to do a thousand times.
And John Marra is learning that the hard way in
that players who act like children have to be treated
as such. Yeah, right, if you give in to his demands,

(03:36):
if you allow him to behave like an immature imp,
and you allow him to to be a show and
to yell at various pieces of inanimate equipment on the sidelines,
and then you you get your little Johnny still gets
his allowance. A matter of fact, he didn't just get
his allowance. He gotta raise that allowance. You can't act

(03:59):
surprise when he's still acting for water. My sister, by
the way, has the ultimate in this will end them
asking for a snack at bedtime. Are you ready for it?
You guys can have broccoli or cauliflower or carrots. Suddenly, remarkably,

(04:21):
they're not that hungry. No, no, no, I don't want broccoli.
No no, no, I don't want carrots. No no, no no,
I don't want cauliflower. Well, that apparently you're not hungry.
Go to bed, and as far as the water they
are at, get it to day himself, age, get it
Joe Day himself. All right, more on that to come.

(04:45):
Let's get to last night, Monday Night football, which was
exciting and there was a controversial call. But after watching
the Miami Dolphins beat the Chicago Bears, and before we
act like the Bears got blown out by Brock Osweiler
and the Dolphins, even though they were coming off by week.
They're playing in the heat, they're standing in the sun.

(05:09):
Jordan Howard drops the ball at the one ft line
in the first half and Cody Parkey misses a game
winning field goal in overtime. Otherwise, the Bears are sitting
there at four and one and sitting pretty. But the
fact is that with the exception of one or two plays,
Khalil Mack was rendered relatively ineffective against the Miami Dolphins.

(05:34):
They chipped him some, but not a ton. They got
rid of it quick. They ran the ball on first down,
they got it to third and manageable. Adam Gates did
a magnificent job of preparing for a terrific pass rush,
and between that and the fact that it was hot,
and the fact that when he got matched up with
Larrymie Tuns Larmy tounsl's an outstanding job. So the other side,

(05:54):
the Miami Dolphins managed to deal and beat Khalil Mack.
And then you watched night. If you wanted to tell
me that a running back or a wide receiver or
a defensive end has the value anywhere near of a quarterback,
that's cool, but I'm gonna cease to listen to you.
In in terms of understanding values, have the real estate

(06:20):
discussion with a friend if they try and talk about, no,
you don't understand, man, this is an up and coming neighborhood,
Like that's cool, but you know what, it's not worth
as much as this neighborhood. You know why, because it's
about location. Location. Location. Here's the better analogy. Here's why
you invest in a quarterback. The same reason you invest

(06:43):
in the kitchen. Kitchen makes the house right. Kitchens the
first place everybody looks. Kitchens the place where people gather.
If you're going to redo a house or if you're
going to buy a house, obviously first it's about location,
but second it's about the kitchen. Redo the kitchen you
can redo. Bathrooms. You spend at least five minutes of

(07:05):
your day in a bathroom. Oh the television. Oh look
they have a theater room. You know, it's the worst
purchase you can ever make when you buy a house.
Jet tub. How many times in the last five years
have you taken a bath? And when you've taken a bath,

(07:25):
have you even thought about the jets like, oh, I'll
take it all the time, trust me, I've had the
jet tubs. They're really cool, but you end up using
them like twice a year. You know what you use
every day, three times a day, the centerpiece of your house,
your kitchen. That's what a quarterback is and that's why.

(07:47):
Though the Green Bay Packers are a bit of a mess.
Though C J. Bethord marched up and down the field
against them and put thirty points on them in a
loss in Green Bay. They have Aaron Rodgers. They spent
and maybe overspent on the Ultimate sheet Code. They're like,
you know what, we don't really need that double thick

(08:08):
grant it, but hell it's in the kitchen. We don't
really need custom cabinets, but hell it's in the kitchen.
Iran Rogers, whom I've told you time and again, is
the best I've ever seen played the position. No, he's
not the most successful. That's Tom Brady, who also is terrific.

(08:32):
But the juxtaposition of watching Rogers and watching Brady over
the past two nights, and yes, Brady got to win
against Kansas City and Rogers got to win against San Francisco.
Kansas City far more game than San Francisco. But Brady
is surrounded by a much better allotment of talent and
much better coaching of the defensive side of the ball.

(08:57):
There's a reason quarterbacks are worth more. There's a reason
that the NFL wants them to remain upright. There's a
reason that they're calling every penalty they can on the
defense when possible, because the games are more watchable, they're
more fun, and the teams are just better. And oh yeah,
by the way, we've all spent all that money on
the kitchen. You might as well go out and go

(09:19):
to the good steak place instead of going down the
street and getting something that still has marks with the
jockey was hitting it. I look around the NFC, which
has been wildly disappointed. We walked into the season thinking,
oh man, look it out loaded. The NFC is Eagles
looking like a dynasty, right, the Eagles Rams. Oh. The

(09:45):
NFC East also had the the Giants and the Cowboys,
the NFC South, the Atlanta Falcons and the Saints and
the Carol Line of Panthers. And here's all you have
to know about how good Aaron Rodgers is. They're playing

(10:07):
any of those teams I mentioned outside in the Vikings.
They're playing in those teams outside of the Rams who
I mentioned, And are you picking against Aaron Rodgers. That's
how good he is. That's how important the quarterback is.
That's how much the game skews to that position. The

(10:28):
only thing missing from last night after that scramble was
Aaron Rodgers dropping the football at mid midfield and going
gladiator on us and saying, are you not entertained? Are
you not entertained? So you can tell me about Brady

(10:48):
and the jewelry. He's terrific and he's playing now into
NFL senior citizen range. And I'm not trying to try
and take anything away from Brady. I grew up watching
Joe Montana thinking they would never be anything like it.
You can pick your guy that has more rings, but
nothing spoke to the ineptitude around him, the dysfunction within

(11:10):
the coaching staff, and yet the utter eliteness of number
twelve in a packer Jersey. That's why Green Bay, though
they screwed a lot of things up, you know, some
of the layout of the house, the yard just not right.
They got the kitchen right. And against any of those

(11:31):
other NFC teams, you're probably gonna take Rogers, all right.
Coming up next, a shootout win over the Buccaneers and
Falcons and they're still alive in the NFC South. Will
catch up with tight end Austin Hooper. Can the Falcons
close the gap on the Panthers and the Saints? And
how they changed now that Davonte Freeman is out, we'll

(11:53):
ask him he joins us up coming next. But first, hey,

(13:20):
ot Lip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Here's what I wonder
about Austin Hooper. All right, former Stanford guy Conker Delasu,
which is, um, do you know anything about California high
school football? You know about Conquer Delasal. Right, In the
North you got conquer Dalaal. In the South you got
Modern Day uh, and then in Vegas you got Bishop Gorman.

(13:42):
Like those are the powerhouses. Gorman's New Dallas al has
been good basketball and football for for years. I'm I'm
fascinated about what he did last weekend in their thirty
four twenty nine win over the Tampa Buccaneers. So good,
they were so good that they got the defense according
for the Buccaneers Mike Smith, former Falcons head coach, fired
all right, Um, but I want to know if that

(14:04):
was said the game plan coming in, he got ten targets,
caught nine balls for for seventy one yards in the touchdown.
Are you ready? He's there? Cool? Austin Hooper joins us
from the Atlanta Falcons on The Doug out Lip Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Did you knew no going into
the game that you were going to be a huge
focal point for the offense. I mean, you you always

(14:27):
have the mindset right that that you're gonna make plays
on game day. But I mean, there wasn't a set
amount of things scripted for me, you know, if that
makes sense. It kind of just you know, having in
the flow of the game and just work with the cause.
Meant went through his progressions and saw me and hit
me insomaries, So just try to take advantage of all
those opts I got. Okay, So I'm just I was
just wondering if, like, on Friday night, you guys get

(14:49):
the game plan and you like text all your buddies
who have you on Fantasy be like, dude, you guys
need to pick me up because I'm about to get
fed until I burped. No doubt, no doubt, no doubt that. Yeah,
But the funny part is like, like I said that
too many like crazy scripted plays for me, like some
certain ones that you know, I'm not gonna say on
the show or not, but that I'll text my buddies
to play fantacy like hey around like around the middle

(15:11):
of the game, if you see it's third and long,
some cool should be happening. But yeah, there wasn't anything
too crazy for me in the base game playing the
Sweeky just you know, sometimes that's just kind of how
it shakes out, just on the run. Okay, So how
has this change? Because um, look, I know your rookie year,
you you were catching balls, and I know when when
Jacob Tammy retires you became a bigger focal point. But
it feels like from a couple of weeks ago when

(15:32):
you guys played Pittsburgh, now all of a sudden, it's
like you you are the safety blanket. You are the
guy he is looking for outside of Julio, Like you're
the guy. Would you have twelve targets two weeks ago?
Ten targets this week? Was it a discussion you guys had,
was it something Sark said, Like it feels like there's
a distinct change and how much Matt's looking for you. Yeah,

(15:54):
I mean, it's it's funny that on me. I'll remember
distinct you know, conversation I had with a Mat or
anything like that. But me in this off season said
going back home and whatnot. I stayed in Atlanta to
work with Matt, and then when he went out to
California UM to continue to work out prior of the season,
I followed him out there. So, I mean, we just
got thousands of reps together during the off season. So

(16:18):
you know, during certain game plans shift, who want to
attack a different part of the opposing defense, like in Pittsburgh.
So I mean that's just kind of starting, you know,
me allowing to get some more targets. And then how
it shook out on Sunday against the Bucks. It was
kind of a similar situation where you just sided a
final any more. So they answer your question, It wasn't
like a specific conversation we had. I feel like that's

(16:38):
just kind of in products of the work we put
in in the off season. And I would I would
guess in Austin Hoop for joining us in the dug
out the joke. If people haven't followed the Falcons in
addition to Davante Freeman today being placed on I R.
You guys have had just a ridiculous amount of injuries,
right Keano, Neil Dion, James, Andy levitre obviously hurting you
guys with you know, losing that type of guard Ricardo Allen.

(17:01):
You guys have just been crushed by injuries. Um, how
much does that change how you guys playing? Who you
guys are. I mean, you know it's tough. I always
losing you know, your your brothers to injuries like I mean,
especially once you don't you uh, you know, you don't
want to hear about. But I mean, at the end
of the day, what do you do. I mean, it's
the next man of mentality. I mean, with those those

(17:22):
round of guys, and we'll support them the fullest. But
you know as well as I do. I mean, just
a partless game. I mean, that's just you gotta deal
with when you go to work every day in this profession.
But our mindset who we are hasn't changed. I mean,
Dan Quinn does a tremendous job of keeping the focus
on the task at hand, and we're all you know, well,

(17:44):
we all have the same idea on game day of
what we want to do. But I mean, injuries are
just part of the game. All we can do is
just have a you know, next man up, you know,
do his job as well, if not better. It's it's
weird that you guys lost those the couples. You lost
the Bengals in the shootout, right, you lost Saints in
a shootout. You lost a close game to the Eagles.
You know where you couldn't couldn't punch it in right

(18:06):
in the red zone. So it's like you're two and four,
but but it feels like you're a lot better than
the record. What's it like around the facility when the
old expression, the old Bill Parsonsels expression is you are
what your record says you are. You guys are two
and four, but it doesn't feel like you're two and
four team, what's it like going to work? I mean,
you just gotta have the same mentality. I mean, you

(18:27):
already know that most of the games are excided by
street points or less. I mean that's the NFL. That's
what makes the viewership the way it is. It's incredibly competitive.
So yeah, when you lose those heartbreakers going down the
final drive and like over time or you know, going
down to kick something like that. I mean I'd rather

(18:49):
I'd rather take and I believe I mean, you do
rather just take a win however you can get it.
I mean, if you lose, you lose. All you can
do is just keep on the same Mentality'll be ready
to come back to work and give it your best. Yeah,
that's that's really all you can do. Is better better
to win ugly than lose pretty. That's exactly that's the
old Austin Hooper joining us in the Doug Gotliep Show
on Fox. Portrait just should be pointing out that the

(19:11):
Stanford guy needed the Oklahoma State guy to to share
within the old adages that just you know, I know
you got into Stanford, but it was a lot a
lot of us because you're incredible looks and athletic ability.
Austin Hooper joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Um, Julio, Julio,
the best catch you've ever seen Julio pull off? Is
it the Super Bowl catch? Yeah? I mean the private

(19:34):
best thing. You know. I've been his teammate for three
years now, so I mean he'll do some crazy stuff
in practice, too, So I mean I've seen him do
such so many freak things that you almost become kind
of desensitized to it, you know what I meant. But
that Super Bowl catch was unlike anything I've ever seen
because I was in the backfield doing pass protection and

(19:54):
I see this ball get drown Like, oh man, there's
no way. I see Julio jump up o the back
of this guy, grab it and toe tap it right
on the sideline. I was like, that was the greatest
catch I've ever seen. What's amazing about our and this
is like this is more to me a public and
a sports media guy. Um issue I have is that

(20:16):
would have been considered the greatest catch in Super Bowl history.
But because you guys didn't win the game, I don't
know if it will get it to do, you know
what I mean? Look whereas that will probably unfortunately be
lost and you know the greatest place in Super Bowl
history because I mean, you know it did end the
way it ended coming up until you know Edelman made
that catch and kind of swung the momentum. I mean,

(20:38):
the best catch of the game was Cooley on the
side on the sideline and made another one in the
game too, I mean, is what it is, it goes
down like that sometimes in NFL history. How long did
it really take to get over it? Um? I mean,
I'm not gonna lie to you. It sucks to go
that you go to distance like that and come up short. Um.

(21:00):
I mean the best thing that helped me out was
just remembering, you know, the sun's gonna from all. Let
me take a deep breath and move on. I mean,
there's nothing else you can do. All you can do
for a minute is but to lost like anything else,
no matter how much you know the fans of the
media want to build it up. At the end of
the day, it is and I mean it's obviously the
one that you've been dreaming about since you're a five

(21:21):
year old kid in the backyard played cast with your dad.
But the end of day, what are you gonna do.
You're gonna dwell on it. He's gonna move on and improve.
So that's kind of way, you know, I I viewed it,
But you know, it is tough. There's no way to
slice it. Last year, you guys were three and three.
You guys lost in New England seven, and then all
of a sudden, you you know, you got a close
win over a bad Jets team on the road and

(21:43):
things things kind of start to look up and where
you know, look in the playoffs. Um, I mean obviously
you you're very You're right there. You could you had
a ball in the air to Julio, you could have
beaten the Eagles who end up winning the thing. Uh,
what can you take from last year's turnaround and bring
it to this year to start winning those close games
that you so far lost. I mean there's really no

(22:06):
sequel sauce or anything like that. I mean, all it
comes down it was just work, camaraderi, emmy, and more
time we've spent around each other, more time where in
these you know, very tough situations. I mean that's where
you really get characters. So I mean, even we haven't
found success earlier, I mean the battle of scars that
we've had on the season, you know, playing in overtimes,

(22:29):
playing late in the games, things like that, with a
lot of guys, you know, this is there, what this
is we're going to week seven. I mean they only
had you know, three or four or five starts under
their belts through the injuries. So I mean these guys
are getting better and you can see it every single game.
So I mean I have a lot of faith in
my team and the guys. We have Austin Hooper joining
us in the Doug Gotlips Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(22:53):
You get the Giants. Um, there are a team that
kind of is struggling. I'm wondering this about and you
have been the league a couple of years, but with
with all, with the with the kind of adjustment in
the rules, and continue to protect the quarterback and protect
especially the wide receivers, a lot of defensive holds, a
lot of past interference. Does it feel like a different

(23:13):
game during the game or is it just a different
game to the you know, final score watching to those
of us watching at home and then any of that
about it. But yeah, it does change the game for sure.
I mean, talking to some of the defensive linemen, we
have an arching to like the biggest issue out there
is just clarity, right like what is permissible what is not?

(23:37):
And if there is a hard you know, black and white,
it would make the understanding so much easier for all
players across the board. But I feel like everything is
justice gray area limbo type where we just don't really
know exactly what is okay and what is not. So
I mean if there's a little more clarity, I feel
like everybody, um will be a lot better off in

(24:00):
the lest though it's given us you know, three or
four year games have been exciting as anything. Last night's
Monday night football game incredibly exciting. Sunday night football was
incredibly exciting. So it's like like, yeah, it's during it.
It's gotta be really hard, especially defensively, too hard to
play to know how to do your job. But to
the viewer at home, like, we don't care because between
fantasy and regular you know, gambling and just watching football

(24:22):
that the shootouts are a lot better watch, no doubt.
I mean people want to watch to watch game go,
you know nine seven and if you want to watch that,
watching SEC again. But people want to watch the NFL.
You want to hold on, dude, you went to Stanford.
Don't act like you guys were running oop to you,
you know, going five wy. You guys were putting up

(24:48):
some boy. But but when you but when you played
in the Rose Bowl, I distinctly remember like a fourth
and fourth and one to which you guys line up
with like fifteen offensive linemen on the field and just
try to run it into Michigan state in the line. So, uh,
we've been doing so good. Why that up, Austin, listen,
congrats on the huge week. Make sure you put us

(25:10):
on that text chain when you know you're gonna get
the rock like ten eleven times so we can send
it out to all our buddies. Continued health and success.
I know you get that bye week and and the
first half of the season on to win. Appreciate you
joined us. Thanks for having me do all right, that's
Austin Hooper joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Do you guys remember a movie man?
This is again this is the raw Moost thing because

(25:30):
he actually watches movies, as opposed to Dan Buyer who's
never actually seen Star Wars or any legit movies. Um,
it wasn't One Crazy Summer. What was the other one
that had that that had John Cusack's name was Hoops?
You remember that? You don't remember the movie? Um? Oh,

(25:51):
I think it was was one Crazy suthing might have
been one Crazy Summer. Okay, that's the one. I that
came right to my head when you said it. So yeah,
one crazy summer and John Cusack's name was Hoops. McCann
and everybody thought because his mom and dad thought he'd
be a basketball player, Like didn't even play basketball, And
so he introduced himself as hoops and it's the most
confusing thing ever. Austin Hooper is brought to you by

(26:16):
Discover Card. We treat you like you'd treat you. Let's
check in with Dan Buyer, who's not watching movies instead,
he's watching sports. That's not much fun. He's also Dan,
really did you have to wear the Brewers colors? Did you?
I mean, honestly, getting a tattoo of the score on
your arm and World Series two thousand eighteen. I think

(26:37):
that's a little much. You know me and Tat's Doug.
I just can't stay away. I just can't stay away.
It's in my blood. Well, we'll get to some baseball
and we'll get to some hoops in just a second,
but I want to get you up today to what's
happening in the NFL. Falcons placing running back DeVante Freeman,
as you just mentioned with his teammate Austin Hooper placing
Freeman on injured reserve following growing surgery, Gonna miss at

(27:00):
least the team's next eight games. As he is eligible
to return. ESPN earlier this morning says that Bill's quarterback
Josh Allen not gonna play Week seven against the Colts
and is expected to miss multiple weeks because of that
elbow injury. There was another part of that report is
that is interesting is saying that the players in the
locker room would not be on board with Nathan Peterman
getting the start in Week seven against the Colts. College

(27:23):
Football News Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa's leaving school
and we'll focus on training for the NFL Draft. Both
had surgery to repair a core muscle injury last month
and is projected to be a top pick in next
springs draft. Game three of the ALCS between the Red
Sox and Astros is at five oh nine Eastern time.
You'll see that one on TVs. So he's tied up
at a game of piece. Nathan Vivaldi against Dallas Kaiko.

(27:44):
Game four between the Brewers and Dodgers on Fox Sports one.
Brewers up in the NLCS to one. First pitch expected
nine o nine Eastern time. Geo Gonzalez goes up against
Rich Hill and tonight. It's the opener to the NBA
regular season. Sixers in Celtics at eight of Eastern Time,
followed by the Thunder and Warriors ten thirty Eastern. Russell
Westbrook out for Oklahoma City, while Stephen Adams is a

(28:07):
game time decision for the Thunder because of a back issue.
Doug the big back, very very big back. Steven Adams
probably the most enjoyable quote in the uh UM most
most enjoyable quote anyway. Yeah, he's great. By the way,
Austin Hooper did walk into that one. He walked right

(28:27):
in that one. He's taught clowning SEC defenses, SEC offenses.
I'm like, dude, I was watching the Rose Bowl and
you guys, fourth and one, you line up and you
put fifteen linemen on the field and run it right
into Michigan State and lose. But I do like us
uh J. Bates Thompson said, just waiting on Gottlieb Show
to call out nick bos Are being selfish and quitting

(28:49):
on his team like he did Kelly Bryant. Nick bos
is coming off of surgery, dude. Kind of different, kind
of different. The idea of playing in a meaningful game
because you might get hurt is different than not playing
in meaningful games because you have been hurt. If you
don't understand that, I can't really have a conversation with you.

(29:13):
It's really hard to have a conversation. Um, do you
guys like Zach low I do. I'm a fan. And
he had his predictions for the upcoming NBA season, and
many of them are good. And I'm we're salivating over
the thought that tonight you got two NBA games, not
gonna see the Lakers take on the Trailblazer until Thursday night.

(29:33):
We got good And I like NBA hoops is fun.
It's fun. But one of his predictions is um that
Kevin Durants canna end up with the Knicks. Now he
does at the end of the couple of paragraphs back
pedal and says, look, even the Warriors have no don't

(29:56):
don't even know who could possibly. No one seems to
know Kevin and Durant because who he used to be,
he said, wasn't the real hymn, and now this is
the real hymn. But in his Peace and ESPN dot
Com he says that Clay Thompson has no plans to
take a discount. Thompson has actually said otherwise, but it's

(30:16):
very well could be accurate, and the Warriors don't expect
him to, league sources say. And so between Clay Thompson
not wanting to take a discount and the fact that
people believe it's still Steph Curry's team, Kevin Durant could
go after winning possibly another title and spread his own
wings and go to New York to be the savior

(30:38):
for the New York Knicks. And there are some logical
conclusions in there. His business partner, of course, lives in
New York City. Many have tried to climb that mountain,
that is the everest of the NBA. Who can climb
the mountain, stick the flag in the ground and save
the New York Knicks. Do I need to go through
the players and coaches that have tried right from Pettino

(31:00):
and Larry Brown and Phil Jackson all the way you
go players, whether it's Carmelo Anthony most recently Amari Stoddermeyer,
Penny Hardaway, Pat Ewing, you name it, many have tried
to be the guy or even after the Ewing regime
and the Riley regime went away that they haven't really

(31:21):
been relevant with exception of one Eastern Conference finals. But
the idea that Kevin Durant knows what he's going to
do in July of this year and July of next year,
during October of this year. Do you know what Zach

(31:43):
Blow is not taking into account the most powerful but
annoyed the second most powerful drug in our existence? Second
most powerful drugs. I would say it's love, but it's
something Else's the most powerful drug, at least in male existence. Right,

(32:05):
The second most powerful drug is winning. Winning. Nothing nothing
cures all ills like winning a little pill of winning. Hey,
last year, this time, Paul George, even based upon his
own words, was like, Dude, I didn't want to go
to Oklahoma City. I didn't want to stay in Oklahoma City.

(32:26):
I was going to be a Laker. And they didn't
even win that much. So relationships evolved, people evolved, and
the idea of changing and moving again, Dude, I just
moved half blocked down the street. And it's as Oh,
you gotta go to the school district and change addresses everything,

(32:49):
every account you have. You gotta change a dress. Oh,
I gotta call Fox and Fox Sports Radio and change
my address there. Forget about moving all that stuff and
cable and satellite and the worst. Let alone move across
country sounds like a good idea to actually do it,

(33:09):
and maybe he will. But the idea that he knows
right now, when he's walking into a situation of winning
potentially a third consecutive championship, when he doesn't know how
he's gonna jibe with DeMarcus Cousins. We don't know the
health frankly of his of his you know, hybrid big guy. Yeah,

(33:39):
you look at what the Golden State Warriors are. You
want to prediction. I do think that, for example, tonight,
Kevin Durant goes crazy. I do think that Kevin Durant
is one of two of the most likely MVP candidates
and Lebron James is not the other. Honest, of course,
is by by most people's estimation that he's gonna put

(33:59):
up crazy numbers. Feel like they're better coach this year.
But Draymond Green's banged up, the Marcus Cousin is not
getting ready to play. We have no idea how they'll
play in the playoffs. He's won two finals m vps
in a row, and the second most powerful drug in
human existence is winning. And they got a chance to

(34:20):
win a lot of games, and he got a chance
to be the guy. How hard is it for people
to quit heroin and meth and real drugs? How hard
is it to quit that woman that you've been with
for years? That's how hard it is to quit winning

(34:41):
printing championships, putting yourself above the likes of Jordan's only
won three in a row. That's what he would be
walking away from. But we don't know how it goes,
and so this is not this is not to diminish
the predictions of Zach Low, but he's guessing in October

(35:03):
on what's going to happen in July after a hundred games,
the results of which we don't know, but we assume
at the end will work out in his favor. So
I do have some predictions for the NBA season, but
predicting where Kevin Durant's gonna call home is a dicey proposition.

(35:29):
Is Lebron James still the best player in the NBA?
We'll discuss next. Be sure to catch live editions of

(35:50):
how much like Brett Barvey is. You know, I've played
against Breton's heyday, the three m v p s. I
was one in ten and Lambeau against him. I got
to see it up close in person. Brett would come
out in big games and be a little fiery, little
amped up, miss high, take extra chances. You knew you
had to get to bred early if he was going
to make a mistake. Once he settled down, once he

(36:13):
got into rhythm, he was nearly unstoppable. And that's what
Patrick Mahomes is right now. He's uh, he's a you know,
three d thousand dollars sports car that they're driving wide open.
They're not you know, they're not cruise around town with him.
They're out on the Audubon going a hundred and sixty um.
They're taking a ton of risk. They're pushing it down

(36:33):
the field. They're not put any restraints on him. He
made a couple of mistakes, he bounced back and they
put up a forty piece in Foxborough and that's hard
to do. Fifty three plays, Doug and we had fifty
three plays. The Patriot had seventy three. The sky's a
limit for this team, for that quarterback. I really want
to see that matchup again, but I want to see

(36:54):
it in Kansas City. I think it'd be a different game.

where we get to rank things. Let's Doug rank the
four teams that are alive in baseball in terms of

(38:02):
the best chance to win the World Series. So Red Sox, Astros, Brewers,
Dodgers rank them one to four the best chance to
win the World Series. All right, I'm gonna go uh
four Lokers. Dodgers gave away home field advantage losing at home.
And the big reason that I can't buy into the Dodgers,

(38:25):
even though their bullpen was good, is starting pitching, and
they're gonna go. Rich Hill starts in Game four, he
lasts at best fifty pitches, and then they're ace. Of course,
is Clayton Kershaw, who the Brewers got to last time around.
I'll go Dodgers have the fourth greatest probability of winning
the World Series. I'll go Brewers at three. That's because

(38:46):
I think the American League teams are better. Red Sox
split at home with the Astros at two and the Astros,
who I do believe are the best team in baseball,
and now they have home field advantage in the American League.
Had the Astros at I'm not surprised by the Astros.
I was wondering where you were going to put the
Red Sox and UH two is a strong spot. Let's

(39:07):
do a little NBA preview regular season starts tonight. You
talked about Zack Low and some of his predictions. Doug
rank the top three teams in the NBA's Eastern Conferences
the season Eastern the Eastern Conference, Celtics one, and there's
a big drop between one and two. Um, I'll bite
and go Raptors at the Raptur at two and UM

(39:32):
at three. I don't know. It may be a surprise
for some people. I'll put the Bucks at three again.
I like the Milwaukee Bucks. I like Jannice. I think, um,
they're better because of you know, the two moves they made.
One is obviously the coaching change that was made at
about mid year, right way it was it mad year

(39:54):
when Jason Kidd was fired. Felt like I felt like
mid year and the other one. Honestly, I kind of
think they're better with Jabari Parker gone. Jabari Parker. They
always wanted to play him, but he just he can't
guard anybody, and he was a guy who kind of
demanded some amount of tension offensively. Now everything is built
around Jana's I like that better. I'll put the Bucks

(40:16):
at three. New arena, newhead coach of Mike Budenholes are
making the top three all right, right, the top three
teams in the Western Conference some Warriors, one Thunder when
Russell Westbrook healthy, two Rockets three. I think the Thunder
are better because of the consistency and because they got
rid of Carmelo. And the opposite for Houston is that
a top three heavy conference. Is anybody even close to three? No,

(40:41):
But there's there's a big group behind them, which is
is pretty good. Right whether you go Lakers, checkout Jazz.
People forget about Memphis. Mike Conley didn't play last year
because of injury and uh those Zach Globe predicts that
Marcus sol will opt out at the end of the
year and and go elsewhere. When you have those two

(41:03):
uh and and and I think they drafted well, you
got a chance there in Memphis. They have good culture
there in terms of how they play and who they play.
I'll beat out like Fitsdale when he was their head
coach and that he's now with the Knicks. Um, I
think Dallas will be better. You have New Orleans who
was better after DeMarcus Cousins was gone. I know they
lose Rondo, but he wasn't really started for them anyway.

(41:24):
Like I think there's a big group there, But yes,
there's a big gap between three and and four. Alright, Finally, Doug,
let's rank the top three candidates for m v P,
not best players, but candidates for m v P entering
the NBA's regular season. Yeah, I'm gonna go Kadi one,
Janice too, and I'll put um Lebron James three. It's

(41:46):
not that James Harden is not gonna put a big
numbers or Russell Westbrook's not gonna put a big d
Anthony Dave. Anthony Davis would probably be the fourth, but
I'll put Lebron only because there's gonna be a dramatic
change in the number of wins. And he rightfully, we'll
get a bunch of credit for that. This is game

(42:55):
This guy has had an amazing career. Right, two time
Pro bowler, He's a Super Bowl champion, go back to
Super Bowl fifty um. He led the league in receiving
touchdowns back in two thousand nine when he was a
pro bowler. And of course he's the sixth pick of
the NFL Draft coming out of Maryland. And now this
is second tour of duty with Alex Smith as his quarterback.
He's eighty five for the Washington Redskins, who just beat

(43:18):
the Carolina Panthers. He's Vernon Davis. He joins us on
the Doug Golip Show. Vernon, how are you? Hey? How
are you good man? What's what's this like for you?
I mean, this is this is not this is not
your first rodeo. You've been around a while what what's
it like putting on the helmet, putting on the shoulder pads.
Now doing it thirty four years old. Oh, it's incredible
and nothing's really changed. Anything changed is my mindset, um,

(43:43):
my ability to fight through tough times and adversity. And uh,
I'll be the leader that my teammates need me to be.
Versus the younger day it was, It was, it was
a bit of a struggle. But now my mind's a
lot longer. And uh yeah, I mean like, look, if
you if we go back to those days, Mike singletaryer
coach lays India on the sidelines, calls you out, what

(44:06):
what what? And when did the mentality change to which
you when you became a dominant player? Well? How how
did how did the mindset flip? I feel like you
flip the um. You know, I wanted to be a leader.
I always wanted to be a leader, but I didn't
know how. I had to learn how to practice, I
have to learn how to be accountable for my teammates. Um,

(44:28):
all those things I had to take into considerations in
order to be who I needed to become. It just
takes It's just one day at a time. If you
just learned this. If you work on yourself and and
you just take it one day at a time, everything
will come to fruition when it comes to your goals
and ambition to be um a great teammate, but a

(44:51):
bunch of things. I haven't gotten a chance to ask you,
Burned Davis joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show. You
want to super Bowl with the Broncos, But it wasn't.
It didn't I don't know a fan. It didn't feel
the same as when you went to and nearly won
a super Bowl with the Niners. What's that like to
almost be a mercenary? Right, come in for a job,
to do a job, and you completed the job and

(45:11):
won a super Bowl, But it wasn't your team one
that you're synonymous with. What's that like? In hindsight? Was no?
Winning a super Bowl first and foremost is one of
the most amazing things that could ever happen to you
in your career, as hard as few and far between
to even make it to the playoffs. So extremely grateful

(45:32):
for that. But if I compared the two from the
time we went in San Francisco and going and Denver
and actually winning, Uh, they were different. They were different.
When I was in San Francisco, I was a focal
point when it came to targets and making plays and
versus in Denver, I had a role and I had

(45:54):
to accept that role and take responsibility and be uh.
Therefore my teammates whenever they needed. It's funny because a
good friend of mine's a picture relief picture for the
Astra named Joe Smith, and Joe you know he was
He was with the Indians and then he signed elsewhere
and end up with the Cubs. They won the World Series,

(46:15):
but he didn't pitch in the World Series for the Cubs,
and yet he had played in the playoffs of the Indians,
and he was like, dude, to this day, I'd rather
lose in the playoffs pitching with the guys that I
came up with with the Indians, then I would even
winning a World Series with the Cubs just because I
wasn't involved. It wasn't my team was a little bit different.
Is there any bit of that, even though you still

(46:36):
have that Super Bowl ring? No, I'm not gonna say that.
I can't say that because I'm extremely grateful. Uh. I
look at times and things don't go you away because
he's a human being. We want to be we always
want to be at the forefront. We want to make play,
and he who want to do that. I want it
when it comes to this game, and sometimes it's just

(47:00):
unfortunately that it don't it don't happen that way, that
the world doesn't revolve around us. So I'm just gonna
have to say that I'm extremely grateful, and that wasn't
my attitude. Um, I'm humble, I'm humble by it's great.
I'm glad it did happen. I'm glad I wasn't the
focal point. I'm glad I had to take the back seat,
um and just be there as a leader to help

(47:22):
my teammates win uh A championship. And you know, I'm
also grateful for the plays that I was that I
was able to be a part of in in the
actual super Bowl. So that's that's just um that that's
it's amazing. It's amazing to me. I look at the
ring and I and I still can't believe that I
was able to capture that Super Bowl with those guys,

(47:44):
Veron Davis joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show. Washington
Redskins just beat the Carolina Panthers in really hard hitting, vicious,
tough football game. They moved their record to three and
two on the season. What's Alex like now is composed
to Alex like back when you play with him with
the Diners. Alex Now he's grown as a person. He's uh,
he's a lot stronger and mentally um, and he's uh.

(48:09):
He's just a great player, tremendous player. He comes to
work with a great attitude. He wants to make plays,
and he wants to do well and leave the team.
You and Adrian Peterson like you guys trying to who
can stay in the league longer. I'm not sure that dudes.
The beast, he's the BEA's he's a club. But I've
just taken the one game once the day at a time. Uh,

(48:31):
one game at a time and one season at a time.
Your boy, Do any of your boys in the locker
room give you grief about Vante? They're like, hey, you're
gonna make it out in the second half, anybody, because
you know how locker rooms are. There's no holes bar huh.
It's it's such a sensitive subject. No one bothers me
with that. No one gives me a hard time. Tell
me about your your partnership with Pathwater. Well, our partner
with Pathwater because of their their goal UM, their ambitions

(48:54):
to eliminate plastic We all know you know about plastic
um it's in the ocean, is polluting the universe. So
whatever we can do UM from an environment at standpoint
to eliminate classic is nothing but great And I'm all
about it, especially if it's if it is helping to

(49:16):
make the world a better place. And I also had
an opportunity to um. Look at Leon order the capitals
page and I see he's an about an environmentalist, which
is awesome to see. That gave me more inspiration to
uh be a partner with Path Water. Their goal, their
mission to make the world a better place. Burn Davis

(49:39):
joining us in the Doug Gotlips Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Alright, so look here, here's a team that
made a change at quarterback. Here's a team that was
up and down last year. Now you guys are at
the three and two and you look at the feels
like the Eagles are coming on, feels like the Cowboys
are coming on. Uh? Does feel like the Giants are struggling? Uh?
What do you think the ceiling is for your team.

(50:02):
I feel like we feel like the guy's limit for us.
I feel like we can go as far as we
want to go if we stay together to make sure
the camaraderie is there, practice with enthusiasm and takes care
of business on Sundays, Hey, Vernon, thanks so much for
joining us. Really appreciate being our guest on Fox Sports Radio.
Oh thanks for having you, guys. I appreciate it all.

(50:24):
That's Vernon Davis joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show.
There's a dude who it's always to me what's always interesting,
Like if you look at his career and the hype
that came in when he came to the National Football League,
And there will be some as w I never lived
up to the hype. But then in hinesight like look
crazy productive, like fifteen years in the league, two Pro Bowls,

(50:45):
was part of two Super Bowl teams, one that won it.
As he pointed out, he's a bigger up part of
what the Niners did. And uh, you know when somewhere
as so many other NFL players drafted in that exact
same draft, man, they've been on for for ten years,
for ten years, I mean I even remember, and maybe

(51:08):
this is because I'm getting getting older. I remember when
he was in the UM in the combine, the draft combine,
but he was drafted in the two thousand and six
NFL draft, Dan Bayer, do you remember who the first
pick of the two thousand six NFL Draft is? Just
off the top of your head, Mario Williams, Mario Williams,

(51:29):
Reggie Bush, Vince Young, to brickishaw Ferguson a j Hawk.
Those the guys draft ahead of him, behind him, Michael Hoff,
Dante Whittner, Ernie Sims, Matt Leinert, J Cutler, Helodi Nada.
Outside of Helodi Nata, I would say that Vernon's had
the best career, and even a Loodi Nada since injury

(51:52):
when he was in Baltimore hasn't been as good. But
I would say Hellodi Nata is the one guy who
had probably would be would down and say you had
a better career. Um, you know, D'angela Williams who joined
his last year, had a very good career with Carolina
and then later with Pittsburgh. Roman Harper had an excellent

(52:13):
career like dude, Roman Harper, and part of this we
had Gray hair Roman Harper stream old like Vernon Davis
seems older but not old at all. Yeah, Roma's I
remember him and Mike Singletary didn't get along very well. Well,
that was the can't can't do it. That was who
he was talking about. And he even admitted wouldn't talk

(52:35):
with us, like, look, I'm different than it was then.
You know, I'm mature to change my mindset. That happens.
M j D Maurice Jones Drew like I always think
it's interesting how people look at drafts like, oh, Vernon
Davis didn't live up to Dude, if you can draft
in the top ten of the draft and get a
guy that last fifteen years at the skill position, plays
in a couple of Pro Bowls, like, I actually think

(52:56):
he's a He didn't achieve what he overachieved. People don't
understand how hard is Vince Young was taken third Pro
Bowler in his first year out of the league by
like his fourth year. Even Reggie Bush, who won a
Super Bowl. The Reggie Bush stay in the league for

(53:17):
ten years, was the first team All Pro once and
then third down specialists. It's we as fans kind of
have to change our perspective and our our way of
looking at it. No, what do you become Rob Gronkowski

(53:37):
or was he Tony Gonzalez or No, those guys are
Hall of famers. But if you get a solid pro
for fifteen years, a pretty good twelve years, thirteen years,
that's a pretty good deal. Sometimes in mawedge, you have
to settle your differences and just make it work. That's
what's gonna happen between the Steelers and Levy on Bell.

(53:59):
I'll prove it to you next. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at

Got Them Show Fox Sports Radio. Levian Bell is not
expected to show up at Steelers facility this week, and
while people are freaking out and say, what's this mean,

(54:40):
it means they're gonna wait to the kids are out
of the house. That's what a businically means. We told
you yesterday that if you actually, um, what was the
name of the website I used, it's uh, sport Rack
sp O sport track excuse me, s p O t

(55:01):
R A C dot com. Um. It has sports contracts
and bonuses, etcetera, etcetera. So it's really cool you can
go and use it and find out. Um. Basically like, look,
if you look at Derek Carr's contract and you realize
there's a two thousand nineteen opt out, which, by the way,
when somebody says, hey, in two thousand nineteen they can

(55:22):
get out of the Derek card, dear, you're like, wow,
that's coming up in a couple of years. Like, actually,
that's coming up in a couple of months. Like what Yeah,
it's two thousand eighteen. End of two thousand eighteen football
year is March, and that's at the end of that
is when the Raiders can part ways with with Derek
Carr with like seven point five million in dead money. Um.

(55:46):
And it's fascinating with any sport, but especially with football
because the football the devil is in fact in the details.
And so if you go to salaries based upon position.
You go to running backs, you'll look, You'll say, hey,
Levian Bell, what what is he going to make? Levian

(56:08):
Bell will have a guaranteed contract. He was offered a franchise,
has been offered the franchise tag. We're running back with
the Pittsburgh Steelers. You'll be the highest paid running back
based upon his base salary. Base salary in the league
will be a ten point two million dollar cap hit. Now,

(56:30):
he's not gonna make fourteen million dollars this year because
he's going to miss at least eight games. Eight games
will every nine, So he's if you play sixteen. You
do the math on how much is he gonna bring
up and bring home, you know, four million or so.

(56:54):
So the idea is this, if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers
and you have to pay him, remember they gotta pay
him no matter what, because to offer him once you
once you submit the franchise tender, he's gonna come in
and sign it because he wants to get that year accrued.
Once he gets that year accrued, next year, they can't

(57:15):
afford to keep him on a franchise again because it
spikes to like twenty million dollars, So you're gonna pay
him four or four and a half billion dollars. Are
you gonna pay Levion Bell four and a half million
dollars to not play? Of course you're not. I'm not
saying that James Connor is not having a good year
and that you can't survive with James Conner at a

(57:38):
fraction of the rate that you be playing paying Levian Bell.
I'm not gonna dispute that. What I would tell you is,
if you're gonna pay him four million dollars anyway, you
might as well play him. He does, in fact make
you a better team because he does give you another option,
and whatever type of shape he's in when he does
come in, he'll be fresh as a post to James

(58:00):
Conners taking a beating because he's carrying so much of
the load. This is a lot like the Jacksonville Jaguars
for another year after this in Jacksonville. It's too much money.
That too much money being paid to not play a guy.
It's the same reason that Jamis Winston. You gotta get
rid of Jamis Winston. They picked up his fifth year option.

(58:22):
He's making twenty million dollars next year. He's not going anywhere.
Is the idea that you're going to pay a guy
and not play him, not not play him. The times
that that that that happens is few and far between.
The reality of it. Reality of it is it's a

(58:46):
marriage of convenience. I'm already paying him, he already has
a jersey, he already knows most of the offense. He's really,
really talented. He's gonna play for somebody else next year.
This is a couple staying together through the holidays for
the kids. We don't want to make it. We're around

(59:06):
Thanksgiving and Christmas. We'll wait till the new year, and
that's when you move into your apartment. That's what's gonna
happen with Levian Bell. It's a relationship that's ended, but
it won't end formally until the new year. Yes, right, music,
What if you're the Steelers, What makes you believe that

(59:28):
Levian Bell is all of a sudden gonna buy in
and be the team guy and go all out for
this playoff run for just week ten through perhaps the
super Bowl, because he's got to show that otherwise he's
not gonna get paid. Right You can't. You can't, because
right now, this is about his whole thing is it's
about business, right, And you can't show up to a

(59:50):
football to to to say I want to play and
I'm ready to play and not have your blocking assignments,
not catch the ball in the backfield, not run hard.
You can't. That's the thing about football. You can't. Don't
really dog in football. You're dog in football. You're gonna
get hurt. You're gonna get smacked around, or your quarterback
is gonna get hurt, and then you'll never get a job.
You can't be Those guys don't exist. They just don't exist. Now,

(01:00:13):
if things go bad, are there guys that take will
take a playoff or yeah, no question, but I don't
feel like they're in the fight and he won't be
put in that position. You'll be put in position to
succeed because the Steelers would be better because of it.
It would be a business relationship. I just think you
see it all the time in the NFL where teams

(01:00:34):
constantly see talented players or players that show flashes and
they all think, well, as long as we get them
in with us, we can fix that. So we've already
seen how great Levy on Bell can be. So what
if he plays average for four weeks with the Steelers
after holding out for the first ten weeks. All of
a sudden, some team's gonna not be all in on

(01:00:55):
signing him. I don't understand what you're saying. I'm just saying,
if if you're if you, he doesn't want to get paid.
He wants to be paid higher than any running back
in the NFL. Okay, you're not gonna get paid higher
than any running back in the NFL. If you come
out and you just give minimal effort, it's not gonna happen.
He's not an idiot, not an idiot. He he feels like, look,

(01:01:18):
there's ten million dollars that I'm sacrificing in order to
hold out. I gotta get that money. I don't think
he will get it. But I also know that he's
not stupid enough to show up and play in the
NFL and give a half hearted effort, because then he's
gonna hurt himself, not just this year, but then next
year as well. That's the reality of the sport. It's
the beauty of the sport. Can't dog it can't and

(01:01:39):
the beauty of only playing offense right. Whereas in the
NBA and some guys those were like, and I'm gonna
I'm gonna pass, I can play defense and maybe they
make them take me out. I'm just telling you the
reality of it. Does it sound like could he potentially sure?
The reality is he he didn't want to be paid.
You don't want to just be compensated. He wants to

(01:02:00):
be compensated above that of any running back. And the
only way to do it is to show people exactly
how good you are that you can run in all
you can do all three phases. You can run it,
you can catch it, you can pass, protect, and anything
less than that, we'll not get him compensated. And he
knows that, He absolutely positively knows that there's just no

(01:02:25):
there's just no possible way around that. So marriage of convenience.
They stay together through the holidays, and then once this
year is over, he goes his way, they go their way.
Let's get you to dan buy or find out what
else is going on in the world sports. As we

(01:02:45):
got baseball playoff games, no NFL games today, we do
have some news in Major League Baseball off the theo
what he got damn. We do have some news in
the NFL as well, Falcons plitting running back Davante freemanut
on I are gon'll need surgery on his growing as
the news was bro can buy. Fox Sports insider J
Glazer earlier today. Freeman, though will be eligible to return
from i R, he's just gonna have to miss the

(01:03:07):
team's next eight games. ESPN say his Bills quarterback Josh
Allen won't play Weeks seven against the Colts because of
an elbow injury. The report adds that if the Bills
start Nathan Peterman and maybe in jeopardy of losing the
locker room, as there are some players that are not
in favor of having Peterman start that game. Nathan Peterman
that his Giant owner John Merritt told reporters that he
wishes Odell Beckham Jr. Would do a quote a little

(01:03:29):
more playing and a little less talking end quote. Merissaid
that he's embarrassed by the team's wonted five start and
added he wished ob j made headlines on the field
instead of an interviews off the field. Ohio State defensive
end Nick Bosa's leaving school and will focus on training
for the NFL Draft. Both had Jergergrey to repair a
corn muscle injury last month. He's projected to be a
top pick in next springs NFL draft. Bose's dad spoke

(01:03:52):
to a Columbus, Ohio TV station saying that Nick Bosa's
recovery from that core muscle injury was expected to last
into December. It is the NBA regular season starting tonight,
Sixers in Celtics eight o'clock Eastern time, Thunder and Warriors

Tyler Boy This Ince Bengals. Yeah, that sounds about right.

(01:04:54):
I would give this recommendation to you, Dan Buyer, But
you don't watch movies. You got you like sci fi?
You know that's yeah, far that would be the last
movie horror sci fi. I'd rather watch a romantic comedy.
This is like a thriller. What's your favorite romantic comedy? Um?
I just said I'd rather watch one. I don't know
if I don't like Harry met Sally. Um, Sleepers in Seattle?

(01:05:22):
Have you not seen Sleepers in Seattle? Um? Is that
the one with Tom Hanks? Yes? And Harry met Selly
is Billy Crystal. Yes, I saw one of them, probably
a long time ago, A long time ago. Um. Okay,
So Ramos are you a sci fi guy? Of course? Yes? Yeah,

(01:05:43):
Grave was good. Yes, Yes, I saw it on on
the plane coming back from Miami and it was it
was good. It was Um, it's it's definitely. It's definitely
a thriller. And at the end and you're like, whoa wait, wait,
what's happening? Are there aliens in this movie? No? No, Um,

(01:06:10):
there's a little bit of a how nine there's a
lot of how nine thousand type of thing to it,
but it doesn't not occur in space space that yeah,
I think report back. I think you like it though,
but it's a trippy movie. Tyler Boyd. I think he's like, yeah, man,
it was really really good. Edge my seat and I
tend to agree with him. I think that's exactly what
it was. So the John Mark Marri quotes which are

(01:06:36):
making rounds. John Era is the owner of the New
York Giants. The quote is that Odell needs to play
more and talk less. Quote. I wish he would create
headlines by his play on the field as opposed to
what he says and what he does off the field.

(01:06:59):
I think he needs to do a lot a little
more playing a little less talking. Mara said, I'm still
embarrassed to being one in five. I can't stand up
here and make excuse it to you. You are what
your record says you are. As a wise man once said,
there's nothing I can say to make people feel better
about that. I'm suffering just as much as our fans
are probably more um. Pat Shermer was asked about Mara's

(01:07:22):
comments and says, I don't like it either. I'm disappointed
where one in five we're working to correct that. I've
said it before when we lose games, I'm disappointed for
our players, are coaches, are fans and administration that includes John.
I know the feeling, but what did we really expect?
Like I cannot when when you're a parent, the one

(01:07:45):
thing I want you want your kids to do is
behave when they're not under your watch. Like my my
kid goes to today he has tennis. We say, you know, I,
how did you did you do with the coach? Asked
you yes or no? Sir? And did you say thank
you when you're done? Be respectful? And if they're not,

(01:08:10):
it's like mortifying just is like you don't want to
be the dad who Yeah, I had to tell your
son to go sit down in the corner because he
was being a jerk. Like that just doesn't reflect good
upon you as a parent. And John Morrison there going
like ah Hodell Beckham Jr. I wish she would do
like this was he's under your watch. You allowed him

(01:08:33):
to act the way he acted and it doesn't matter
what you said to Odell by rewarding him with a
huge contract, the biggest contract at his position in the
league before it even played a game, it wasn't like, well,
you know, we went six seven weeks of playing in
the season, and he continued to act like a leader.

(01:08:54):
He needed to act like a mench We rewarded him
and then things started to go bad, like they didn't
play a game. They gave him a contract before the
season began, and they didn't have to, so the only
people the Giants had to blame is themselves. That's what
his response should be. You know, I should be surprised

(01:09:14):
about O'Dell and the way he's acted, the way he's behaved,
But this honestly falls right on me. Falls on me.
I thought he had changed, and I gave him money
before we saw some adversity. This, by the way, was
exactly what I said, what happened, and when I knew
would know whether Odell Beckham Juna would change. It really

(01:09:37):
easy to say. It's even easy to do when things
are good, but it's hard when it's when things are
not good. Right, Remember when Johnny Manziel got drafted by
the Browns and He was interviewed afterwards and they asked

(01:09:58):
himout Johnny Football, and he goes, hey, I'm just John
Menzel from Curvel Texas. You're like, wow, all right, right,
he aced the combine interviews. Do you remember what what
Johnny Menzel did after he got drafted that night when
I'm Manhattan. Sprayed people with champagne, right, sprayed people with champagne,

(01:10:22):
got on a plane, hungover and flew to Cleveland and
winged it. And we were told, no, he's different, he's changed.
And then I remember a report very early in the
season there was video of players walking in and Johnny
Menzel was walking in with some of the last guys
in and when the last last guy's not quarterbacks, last

(01:10:49):
players into the building, And I said to myself then,
and I think I tweeted it and said it later
on my radio show, like I ain't buying the men's
l thing. I'm not. I think Brian Hoyer started ahead
of him right, whereas Hoyer was out on the field
while Johnny Menzel was just walking into the stadium. One

(01:11:11):
guy's a pro, the other guy's Johnny Menzel. That's basically
we have with Odell Beckham Jr. It doesn't mean that
he's not preparing himself, but he his issues are separate,
distinct from from Menzel's right. He's never been accused of
coke or of partying too hard, with exception when he's
with the Chicken the bedroom. But even that people didn't say, well,

(01:11:33):
oh b J is on coke. It doesn't look good.
And he did like to go out around himself people.
It's more about the flamboyant way he acts, the arguments
that he has with teammates, with other teams, and with
U immobiles, sideline objects, kicking nets and fans. He tried

(01:11:59):
to he convinced the giants he changed, maybe I change,
Maybe I change, Maybe I change. He ain't change. Same, dude,
how you are through adversity? Adverse adversity exposes right, you
want to know what kind of do do you? Dude
you are? Let's find out how you act when you
guys get blown out. That's how you find out what

(01:12:20):
kind of team you have, what kind of leadership you have,
what kind of player you are, what kind of person
you are. That's why we should have wins and losses
with little kids. Maybe not when they're six or seven.
They get to eight nine, Like my son, who's a
he's a damn good baseball player. You played with a
different team, got asked to play and he didn't play well.
He struck out. Two kids comes in, he starts to

(01:12:42):
hit a kid walking, some guys start melting down the mound,
struck out. Looking next time at bat on a three
to count, it's like, hey, it's like it wasn't fun.
I was like, yeah, but you learn a lot more
about yourself, about your team, about personal growth when you
strike out when you lose. And if the Giants haven't

(01:13:04):
figured this out now, maybe something needs to explain to him.
The idea of Odell Beckham Jr. Saying he's changed and
not seeing anything substantive other than his words. You can't
even prove it until you play a football game. John
Marra has no one to be critical of outside of himself.
He's the one who agreed to terms in the contract.

(01:13:26):
And I'm sure the other part is he knew it.
Remember he was ticked last summer when that video came out.
Throw up their hands. Maybe we can need to move
on from him. Then they got talked into it. Now
he's changed. Brought to you, Doug got lip show brought

Give me a sense of your take with John Gruden.

(01:14:11):
I know you worked with Gruden in the past, and
I know he felt like they were that that that
there was a rebuild job needed in Oakland. But did
he think they were going to be this bad this soon?
You know, Doug, I think the reality here is he
felt like he waited a long time to take a job,
you know, and he had many offers. I mean, every
year we had the Grouten rumors, we dealt with right.

(01:14:33):
So last year it was Tampa Bay. Probably had the
sense that it wasn't the right fit. But I think
a lot of what his decision came down to, decided
the fact that he got a hundred million for ten years,
was the fact that he thought he had a legitimate
franchise quarterback in Derek Carr, and I think after being
in the organization for nine months or ten months, I
think that realization is different now, and I think that

(01:14:55):
he's got to sit there and look at, really, what
does he have. Here's where the key part comes in.
You can talk all you want about the Raiders rebuilding,
but when you have a franchise quarterback, you never rebuild,
you repair, and they're talking to rebuilding, which shows you
all you need to know. If you missed anything from

Jason Smith last night had this to say reacting to
Monday Night Football. C. J. Bethard is pretty good. He's
having a really good season since he took over for
Garoppolo a few games ago. He's gonna be He's gonna
be another game where he's up around or over three
hundred yards. He had some good games last year as well.
Remember he kind of kept Garoppolo on the bench when

(01:16:23):
they traded for him. You know, they traded for Garoppolo
at the deadline, and Garoppolo sat for a month, so
he was playing pretty well. But you get two week,
twelve weeks thirteen, and suddenly you know, Bethard's been like
around three yards every week, and boy, his quarterback rating
is pretty high. Quarterback controversy going into next season. You
don't know about Garoppolo's health and Bethard having a whole year,

(01:16:45):
he will have more of a resume than Jimmy Garoppolo
has ever had. He plays the rest of this season
and suddenly you can maybe trust him a little bit more.
You go in. I get the Garoppolo is gonna make
twenty seven million dollars next year, But you can't ignore
Bethard and how well he's eight taken and played that well.
He's doing six touchdowns and five interceptions, and they lost

(01:17:07):
all the games that he started, so as he performed
a little bit better than you thought. Sure, is he
a viable backup who could maybe turned to a starter
and they could trade and get some value and return.
Absolutely absolutely, But um yeah, I mean, look, the San
Francisco forty Niners have thirty six and a half million

(01:17:28):
dollars in cap space that only grow in the upcoming offseason.
They're gonna use him as trade bait, which they're smart
to do. They just signed Tom Savage, who of course
has a history as a history with um with Kyle
Shanahan knows that system as well. Kyle Shanahan, who can

(01:17:50):
be difficult for guys deal with, is an offensive mastermind
and is going to make quarterbacks look better like the
idea that you're selling me on. Well, C. J. Bethard
started ahead of Jimmy grow up alot last year because
they didn't want to put jimm Garpolo in there. Until
he knew the system. Um, it's funny. I always thought this,

(01:18:11):
but I was talking with Dave Ragone before the game
on Sunday. David Going is the quarterbacks coach, former Giant
quarterback left handed from Louisville. I was talking to him
about UM about quarterbacks and what allows guys to be successful,
and he said, the number one thing that allows guys
to be successful is if they if they understand the system.

(01:18:35):
A complete knowledge of the system. It's like, there's nothing
worse than you call it play and you kind of
know it, and you get up to the line of
scrimmage and you kind of know the hots you think
because all it takes is one miscommunication. You throw a
ball to where you think someone's gonna be and they're not,
and it's six the other direction. C. J. Bethard as

(01:18:58):
great knowledge of the system, and until Jimmy Garoppolo had it,
they didn't want to play him. And then Jimmy Garoppolos
set the world on fire. And was he great this year?
Now he wasn't great this year, but this idea that
he's got three hundred yards, like you know, Ryan Fitzpatrick

(01:19:21):
had four hundred yards and way better numbers, Ryan Fitzpatrick's backup.
So it's you know, if anything, it gives credit to
the front office and their understanding of of drafting a
quarterback that done a good job and developing a good
job of c. J. Beathard. But when you got a
dude who's the highest paid guy or was the highest

(01:19:42):
paid guy at his position in the NFL and is
going to continue to be do so, there is no
quarterback controversy. Say, you know, Jimmy Garoppolo's uh salary cap
hit his thirty seven million dollars this year, only thirteen
next year to make eighteen point six million dollars. There

(01:20:04):
is a potential for an opt out at the end
of next season, not this season for Garoppolo. Um alright,
so uh, nick Bosa is going to miss the remainder
of the season. A matter of fact, he dropped out
basically of Ohio State. He's gonna rehab and he's gonna
get ready for the upcoming NFL draft. Look, I don't

(01:20:27):
like guys skipping their bowl games, but in this case,
he wasn't gonna be back until December. And when you're
coming back from a sports turnier or something, there a
core muscle tear, core muscle injury, the likelihood that you're
full bosa if you will when you come back to play,
you can in fact hurt your stock and you'd only

(01:20:49):
missed the college while playoff of Ohio State makes it
this one. I got no problem with. It's it's a
there's a difference between missing a game, you know, uh,
getting ready for the NFL Draft when you're already hurt,
and getting ready to get and get ready for the
NFL Draft because you fear getting hurt. Dan you disagree.
I just think it's a unique situation because of where

(01:21:11):
Ohio State is in this season, being undefeated in the
national championship hunt, and for what their fan base feels
and that program feels could be meaningful games, meaning a
College Football Playoffs, semifinal and national championship. The Christian McCaffrey,
Leonard four Net even Denzil a Ward last year for

(01:21:33):
Ohio State set out the Cotton Bowl. Those were just
bowl games. This is different, I think because of where
Ohio State is in the national championship picture, and that's
where I think it's his dad clarifying to that Columbus
station that he wasn't gonna be ready to mid December.
I think may ease some of the uh the anks

(01:21:54):
that some of the Ohio State fans probably felt knowing
that he wasn't coming back and wouldn't be back for
that Michigan game or a potential Big Ten title game.
But those situations were different, like McCaffrey ms the Sun
Bowl for not a Citrus Bowl I think it was,
or Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, whatever it could have been. Um,
the Wire State is in the thick of a national
championship picture, and I think that's what makes it different. Yeah,

(01:22:15):
I I do think though that by announcing and now
it doves good clarity. Um. I talked to a GM
in the NFL. This is three weeks ago, and like, dude,
he ain't playing again, unless unless he really wants to
play against Michigan again. But even then, it's hard for
your first game back to be a game play at
that level. You know, you know, what's here's what's important
to remember. Okay, this is like dark Why didn't Derrick

(01:22:37):
Rose play in the playoffs that one year that he
was hurt like which year? I don't remember which year
because he was hurt like every year in the playoffs,
But there was one year in which he was he
was cleared right before the playoffs and he didn't play
in the playoffs. Remember what I'm talking about. Okay, Look,
there are certain bath playoff games are played at a
much higher level and you can't just you can't work

(01:22:58):
your way back into game shape at that level. It's
the same thing once you get to the Michigan the
Big Ten Championship and the college fall playoffs. So I
agree with you unique set of circumstances. Daniel Jeremiah from

You know what I actually put in? I said, I think,
you know, Matt money Smith can handle this thing solo.

(01:24:24):
I've got Doug working the sidelines, and I just think
it'd be a better use of my time if I
could just kind of take that and get out the
pen and paper and take some notes and see if
I can't learn something. Yeah, listen, I can give you
some stuff if you like. I mean, we can. I'll
see some tax on uh on, uh on, some of
the things that the Dolphins did getting rid of the
ball really really quickly, so so Brock was comfortable. I
thought they ran some quick game. Um, and they ran

(01:24:48):
the ball, they ran well, they ran the ball on
first down A bunch with Frank Gore and usually for
plus yardage and if they didn't get plus yardage on
first down, they'd run it aget on second down. So
it was this is a t And they came into
the game thirty one times they had been third and
seven or more and I think they were only third
or seven or more like two times the entire game.
So they did a really good job of third and

(01:25:10):
manageable for Rock. It's pretty it's pretty incredible to me
when you look at this Dolphins team and you look
around the league. Uh, for my money, you know, I
can make a case that the Dolphins that the collection
is far out performing the talent right now. Um, they're
playing above their heads. I guess I should say the
record is better than the roster. Well, well, you know

(01:25:31):
I would say the opposite. Yeah, Look, they did the
culture change thing, and I would tell you that the
two names that you know, um, Jarvis Landi wasn't beloved,
but he was he was talented, he was productive. But
the two guys that they parted with that they were
least sad to see go, Jay Cutler and Dominican Sue
bad culture guys and that guy that that was a

(01:25:54):
really good culture, as were the Chicago Bears. I thought
two teams are pretty close knit, and I actually bought
what they're selling us. Yeah, no, I look that they
know the building. That's why it's hard when you're always
asked on the outside you know why, you know, why
would they do this? It doesn't make any sense from
the outside. It's like, man, when you're when you're inside
the building and you know all the thinner workings there,
and it's it can be. It really can be additioned

(01:26:15):
by a subtraction and you can't argue with the results
right now where they sit. All right, let's get to
some of the stories of the day, the games at
the moment um. What's your takeaway last night Aaron Rodgers
leading the Green Bay Packers to another win. Well, I
mean my biggest takeaway is how good Kyle Shanahan is.
Is weird as that sounds, Um, you know, for them
to be competitive in that game when you look at

(01:26:37):
what they're working with, Um, that was the biggest takeaway
from me. And then Aaron is to you know, still
there's other guys that can make as good a throw
on occasion, but there's no more gifted consistent thrower than
Aaron Rodgers. He's just what he can do with the
football is ridiculous from a consistency standpoint, with the with
the velocity and everything else to go along with it.

(01:26:58):
It's it's pretty incredible in Kansas City win a super
Bowl without defense. UM, I would say five years ago, no,
but this is a different league right now. Um, And
they've just got to find a way that this is
the college formula right now. You've got to find a
way generate a couple of turnovers and uh and play
really really good red zone defense. So that's where I'd
be placing my focus if I were there, if I

(01:27:19):
were them, and getting Houston back and get him and
UH and de Ford hot. It's almost like a picture.
If you can get those pass rushers to get hot
in the postseason, you know, you don't need to be
dominant for a sixteen game stretch. You need to be
dominant for a three game stretch. Doug gotliv show Fox
Sports Trader. That's the voice of Daniel Jeremiah. Um. The
the New England Patriots always seem to figure out what

(01:27:41):
they have. Is it that they figured out, Hey, you
know what, we can run the football. We can we
can really run the football, set things up with the
run first, and that really, in addition to getting Um
Edelman back, has really changed things. You know what's weird
with them, though, Doug, is when you watch them a
lot of these teams, you know, when you're watching the
tape every week and you kind of see, Okay, this
is this is what they do, this is what they

(01:28:03):
major in, and they're gonna build off this, that or
the other. And it really is with the Patriots. You
can watch him one week and they're under center the
whole game. The next week, they're in the shotgun in
the whole game. One week, there's a fullback, next week
the fullback disappears. Um. They just continue to amaze me
with how they just kind of tinkering toy and depending
on who they're playing, determines what they're gonna do. And
I thought it was clear to see they thought in

(01:28:23):
that game, you know, hey, ball control a little bit
more than usual, run the football, established a line instagrammage,
keep Kansas City off the field. I thought they alway,
it's amazing they always find the right strategy to win
that particular football game. Look, I know he's hurt. But
do we all miss Undershaun Watson? Is he just is
he another one of these guys that, look, he's a
running quarterback and he's gonna get banged up and in

(01:28:46):
the pocket, he's just not accurate enough. Well, you know,
I'm always look, let's let's just let it breathe. It's
the same thing I caution to people that, you know,
with all these rifete quarterbacks want to say this is
this was the right move, this was the wrong move. Um,
let's just let's let it breathe. Let's give it some
time here. And you know, I am gonna give him
a little bit of gracious because the injury and say
there was still some rust to knock off. I did

(01:29:07):
think he made some big plays inside the pocket last year.
We haven't seen as much of it this year. But
to me, yeah, let's let's just hold off and wait
and give it a little bit more time there. But
you're not loving what you're seeing right now, and it's
it's easy. It's easy to feel that way when you
watch um what he's doing. He doesn't look comfortable. Daniel
Jeremiah joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio If you don't know DJ, move the

(01:29:29):
Sticks as the podcast download and put in your queue.
Watch him in the NFL network. He also calls the
games as an analyst for the Chargers radio network. Let
me ask you about the Chargers. I thought they had
a great game plan. Really the offensive line dominated, and
then they just kind of built a wall so that
Baker couldn't see down the middle of the field inside
the hashes where he's most effective. Did they expose Baker

(01:29:49):
or is just this just a really good team that
outmanned the Cleveland Browns. You know, it's interesting. I haven't
been there in the stadium. I told us to focus
at halftime, they're act like, what's going on? What do
you think the deals with Baker and so well, you know,
he rolled his ankle early in that game off to
the off the sideline, and because of that, the mobility
thing was it was a major issue. Not because he

(01:30:11):
couldn't get outside the pocket extend plays or take off
and run or throw on the move, because he couldn't
be sudden with his movement within the pocket. And I honestly, Doug,
I don't think he could see you talk about, you know,
the wall being in front of you if you aren't
sudden and quick to be able to slide and climb
and move around and find those open windows when you're
a undersized quarterback. There were times he's patting the ball,

(01:30:31):
patting the ball, patting the ball, and I'm like, I
don't think he can see. I don't think you see where?
You know where where guys are? Um. You know that
being said, they had some drops. You know, you add
in a couple of those drops, turned those into catches,
the stat line will look a little bit better. What
had at least another touchdown or maybe even two on
his sheet. But no, they did. They collapsed him. It
wasn't like it was immediate pressure that was getting him.

(01:30:52):
It was just kind of a steady push and he
didn't get the ball. Considering they don't have Joey Bosa
and granted, you know, they didn't show up against Chiefs early,
and you know, they couldn't cover Tyrekill although a lot
of people can't cover Tyreek Hill, and they weren't good
enough to beat the Rams. Um it feels like it's
a team that's playing well and Chargers that still has

(01:31:13):
not come anywhere near their peak. Is that crazy? It's
not crazy at all, and I think they, you know,
talking to them every week, they kind of enjoyed laying
in the week a little bit and and playing the
you know, two of the best three teams in the
NFL early on in the season without your best player
and jolly Bosa. Um, you know, losing to them, there's
no shame and you can go back. We can revisit
that Kansas City game and they give up a you know,

(01:31:34):
kick return to Tyreek Hill, drop four touchdown Tyroe. Tyroe
and and Travis Benjamin both dropped touchdowns in that game. Um,
so I thought that game was pretty competitive. In the
Rams game, you know, the same same type of thing.
They moved the ball up and down the field. They
just couldn't finish drives when they got down there. So
I didn't leave that stadium either one of them either
one of those times, thinking, man, the Charges don't belong

(01:31:56):
with the class of the NFL, but they do need
to at some point in time get some some quality
victories against really good teams. They're doing what they need
to do, beating teams that they're clearly better than. Uh.
The big challenge is going to be now as you
step up in competition in the in the towards the
end of the season, when they're gonna see some good
teams like the Ravens, like the Chiefs again find a
way to win some of those. Um feels like Gruten's

(01:32:17):
gutting this team. I mean he should, especially last week
he told us, look, it just wasn't very good football team.
But does that gut job include Derek Carr. It wouldn't
shock me, Um, you know, I know he's I just
think John Gruens is kind of all over the place,
depends on on the day you catch him, whether he's
in love with his quarterback, he's concerned about his quarterback.

(01:32:38):
You know, the same with Amari Cooper, same with a
lot of their personnel. It's just kind of a roller
coaster ride, Um, from what you hear. So nothing would
surprise me at this point in time. I made a
comment the other day. I know, he said today he
took offense to uh, the insinuation that they were tanking. Um.
I would just say, Look, that's one thing I think
you could make a case that the NBA got right.

(01:32:58):
I Mean, that's the worst thing you can do is
be a six win team. And in that world, so
if it's me and you've already traded Khalil Mac. You've
signaled you're not winning anything right now, so don't go
half in. Jump all the way in. You're gonna have
a top pick next year, and then and go get
your your quarterback in the future if you don't believe
there are cars the guy and and get as many
other picks as you can to totally revamped this roster.

(01:33:19):
I completely agree. Like, look, baseball does it. Astro's one
World Series last year. If you go back two thirteen,
they tanked. Now everybody in baseball is tanking. I completely agree. Uh,
he just has done it. Maybe on the I don't
know if this was was Plan A or Plan B
or Plan C, but it does feel like that's that's
what they're doing. Stug Gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,

(01:33:44):
what do you make of the Candil Carolina Panther's another
team kind of all over the map? Could have lost
to the the Giants at home, then did lose to
the Washington Redskins on the road. I don't know. I
mean that's the there's they're a team. Uh that when
I watched him, I just think, man, anybody that bets
on NFL football is certifiably nuts. Um, because the Carolina

(01:34:04):
Panthers are a great example. You do not know what
you're gonna get from them on a weekly basis. And
when Cam you see it, when you go back and
watch it, when Cam's kept clean and he's got some room, uh,
some room around his legs to be able to put
his feet in the ground, Uh, he can play winning football.
He throws obviously with plenty of velocity. You can drive
the ball and accurately and all that stuff. But then
when the Redskins got around his legs and he's falling

(01:34:25):
off rows, the ball goes all over the place. So
U that's one of the issues that's been there in
the past, continues to be there. Um. The good news
for the Panthers, I think when you just you see
and you see a guy, a big time receiver, uh
in greg Olson getting him back in the mix, and
he got his feet wet a little bit here, We're
gonna see him get more comfortable. That'll be a big
addition for them getting a big tight end back. What

(01:34:45):
do you do if you're Jacksonville with Blake Portles, considering
he's got another's he signed a new contract what do
you do? You know it there's a belief, there's a
strong belief in the in the personnel department in Blake
Portles and it's been unwavering. Um I just I just
would hate to waste of what could be. You know,
if you keep him this year, you keep them in

(01:35:06):
the next year, you could have a three year period
where you had a championship caliber football team. Um eas
your quarterback just isn't good enough. Um So I hope
they're not in that situation. I'd be at least making
calls to see what's what's out there at Jacoby Pricett
And I probably wouldn't do it inside the division. I'm
guessing what the colts, but I'd inquire and see what
was out there. I call on the I call on

(01:35:27):
Teddy Bridgewater. Probably can't pull that off either, But I'm
at least I'm at least doing some homework and trying. Yeah,
I mean, it's it's it's crazy because they're they're screwed.
They can't they can't go get anybody makes money, right,
they have to get somebody who's who's making backup money.
And to me though, it was you know, the you know,
with all the money they had. They have a lot
of room. They still have a lot of young players

(01:35:48):
are gonna have having to pay. But they never were
really they never really got in on the Kirk Cousins thing.
They committed to Blake and and that was their deal.
And I think that might come down being one of
the big mistakes because I would imagine Kurt went to
Minnesota because he thought it was the best chance for
him to win. That was what his decision was about.
The money. You just had to meet the threshold um.
And I think that Jacksonville, I mean, if they if
they meet that threshold, who knows. I think he might

(01:36:10):
have gone to Jacksonville over Minnesota. Yeah, they got they
got better personnel though in Minnesota. In Minnesota in terms
of what in terms of wide receivers um. All right,
Levan Bell doesn't make it back till week ten, make
I don't know what four million dollars or so your
Pittsburgh you play him right like you're not gonna sit
him when you're playing him all that money and he's
that talented. Yeah, I mean, maybe you give him a

(01:36:31):
little bit of a pitch count initially. Just make sure
you don't have any soft tissue injuries. But even when
you watch that game and Connor had, you know, a
very productive game. But there's some of those runs, you know,
the eights, the tens, the twelves with Levian Bell, you
know rolling those are twenties and thirties and forties. You know,
So he is an upgrade. And uh, if you're like
you're trying to hunt down a championship, you get your

(01:36:52):
best guys on the field. Just gotta make sure you
don't overuse him early on. Just make sure you don't
get any of those injuries. Last thing, I and this
this does go to the bear steal um. I thought
out of a time out they hit on a touchdown.
But uh, but he he left some he left some
throws out there that you know, I don't know. I
like Mitch a lot. They love him in terms of

(01:37:12):
his personality and what he ultimately will be. And he's
very athletic. Get a huge run to start the second half,
which kind of triggered their their first try to put
points on the board. But he he can get inaccurate
and he can get he does make only pre snap reads.
It feels like, but I have this hypothesis I want
to throw out at you. Okay, so they run that
Kansa City stuff where there's all kinds of motion, all

(01:37:32):
kind of movement, and they're only really running a cup.
They're not running a ton of plays, but they give
you a bunch of different looks. You know. It's kind
of a sleight of hand thing. Right. One of the
reasons I think they're not as good latent games, and
this is Kansas City sometimes and and with Chicago, is
when you're running two minutes drill, you can't do all
that stuff. You just gotta kind of line up, call

(01:37:53):
the play and go. Is that a Is that a
viable hypotheses over maybe why it doesn't work as much
in the playoffs are in second half some big games,
is that you can't do with so much slide of hand.
You know, I'd be totally honest that I've never thought
about that, but it actually is a great point. Um.
They're able to use motions and shifts and formations to
manipulate defenses to get the matchups that they want, and

(01:38:16):
it is you know, you can't do they get a lineup,
snapp the ball and go. When you're in a two
minute situation, then it becomes more about players than plays.
You know, can you win one on one and can
you make the throw? Um? So, I'll be honestly, that's
that's actually a great point. And uh, and what I
want to think about and talk to some coaches about
because it is pretty interesting. Alright. Cool. And then the
other thing is they they love Anthony Miller. I don't
know you like him as a wide receiver. I need

(01:38:37):
a great route runners, tough, toughest nails to man Mark
Helforts could not have been more fused in his prey.
He's like, look, I've only been in the NFL for says,
you know, seven months or six seven months or so.
He's like, so, I don't know what a pro bowler
looks like, but I'm just telling you that's what a
pro Bowl looks like to me. He's like, he's gonna
be big time, and uh, they really like all right, listen,
thanks so much for joining us. Great work on the

(01:38:59):
radio and the TV with checking out the pod this week,
and appreciate being our guest on Fox Sports Radio. Now.
You're the best. Thanks all right. That is the one
and only Daniel Jeremiah joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

(01:40:26):
Got the Show Fox Sports Radio. There are some already
claiming this is going to be the last season of
the Warriors dominance. I always feel like that's hope. Sometimes
I feel like these stories are planning, planted by people
who will never get a shot to be a part
of that type of organization, right, Like you ever do

(01:40:49):
you ever get that feeling? I go, oh, yeah, I
I heard that. Somebody told me them that somebody told
them the Warriors are breaking up, right. It's it's it's
very This was supposed to be the year Tom Brady
and Bill Belichick started I started a fistfight of the sidelines,
wasn't It wasn't this that year when that was gonna happen. Yeah,

(01:41:13):
I didn't, has not, at least to this point, happened.
So look, I don't know what happens with Kevin Durant.
I don't know what happens with Clay Thompson, with Raymond
Green and the you know, the most recent story is
that league sources believe Clay Thompson isn't taking a hometown discount.

(01:41:34):
And it's been long rumored that Clay Thompson, hey, can
you go play for the Lakers? His dad's and former
Lakers from southern California. I'm sure the Clippers will swing
their sword there too. But the the but the the
idea that anybody knows, they just they don't know, because
even the guys themselves don't know. There's no easier um

(01:42:00):
parallel then Paul George. Last year, Paul George gets traded
by his own accounts, like I didn't want to be
in Oklahoma City, didn't play on stand there, and they're like,
you know what, come bad? Yeah? I want to play
in l A. Like, Okay, I can live in l
A in the off season and I'll make a ton
of money here. And I kind of like Russell Westbrookie
takes all the pressure off me. I just go play
like I don't know right this time out of this

(01:42:24):
time last year, ten ten guys said Paul George Gonila
me included included, now did you not go to l
a He didn't take a meeting with the Lakers. This
isn't like when you hear in recruiting like, well, you
know he orally committed to one place and then last

(01:42:45):
second he turned around like no, no, no, no, no,
he didn't pull it. DeAndre Jordan, he didn't see he didn't,
you know, commit to And then all of a sudden,
everybody flew into town and camped out of his residence like, no,
he had a meeting. They threw a party, he said
he was staying. That was that. And last year at

(01:43:08):
this time, we were all myself included, convinced he was
going to be a Laker. It's gonna be a Laker
until he wasn't and isn't and won't be. So um

(01:43:29):
this this this story from Zach Low that says, you know,
Claytomas is not taking a discount from league sources. Like again,
a discount is all relative, Like Kevin Durant technically has
taken a discount in his deals there it's like a
couple of million dollars, right, so is he taking a discount? No,

(01:43:49):
we take a couple million dollars less, so that they
keep the game together. Like, let's see after he wins
a third trade championship, because right now you're like, then
you win a third championship, you're still drunk. You still
got like a contact high because you're in northern California,
You're still kind of buzzed. And they call you in
and like, hey, dude, we know you want to go

(01:44:10):
and have your own team, but if you stay here,
we can win four in a row. The magic Johnson
win four a row. No he did not. Did the
Pistons win four a row? No? That the Celtics win
four in a row? No, No, the recent Celtics have not.
Did Shack and Koby? No didn't Michael Jordan's No, you

(01:44:32):
can be part of the greatest team in the history
of modern basketball, or you can go have your own
team make coup million dollars elsewhere, never win a championship.
There's the chance or or compete for a championship against us,
and he might leave, or he might stay and that
might have Durant leave or whatever, or they might go
the hell with it. Let's stay together and do it

(01:44:54):
again and punt for the following year. So I don't.
I don't love this whole story of we know what's
gonna happen because well, Lebron, but dude, Lebron's a different,
completely different entity. I didn't like the owner had left before.

(01:45:17):
I felt like he came back and accomplished the goal
and Kyrie had already bailed at the start of last year.
Completely different story. NBA season gets on the way tonight.
I will give you a prediction that I do think
Kevin Durant makes a strong run the m v P. Like,
I think this is the year that Kevin Durant's like, hey,

(01:45:39):
you know, I know we're up a bunch. I want
to stay in the fourth quarter and make sure people
realize this is a year which he wants. I don't
know if he plays for the Knicks or the Warriors
and the Lakers or we played the Clippers, or who
he plays for next year. I think that Kevin Durant
wants to prove he's the best player in the league.
Let's get you to Dan Buyer. We have Major League
Baseball underway, and my eyes aren't great because the TV

(01:46:02):
is small, But I think that's a crooked number by
the Boston Red Sox. It is it is a number
two night Red Sox smack from Jose Jose ol. Now
we can't do play by play, Doug. It's not allowed. Okay,
I didn't say. And here's the pitch. That's true. That's
a fastball and out Tube crushes it to left field.

(01:46:29):
It's a single four L tube. He is on base
in the bottom half of the first inning. But it's
the Red Sox who have the lead to nothing over
the Astros. In Game three of the American League Championship Series.
J D. Martinez and rb I doubles. Andre Bogart's and
rb I ground out gave Boston the lead in the
top of the first as they scored twice off of
Dallas Kaiko Nathan evolved on the hill for the Red Sox.

(01:46:52):
One out the bottom of the first inning. Boston's up
on Houston in h Tom by a score of two
to nothing. Game four between the Brewers and Dodgers. Is
that nord on Eastern time in Los Angeles? Brewers up
to one. They have Geo Gonzalez on the hill. Rich
Hill goes for l A Giant Soto. John Marrat told
reporters today, you wishes Odell Beckham Jr. Would do eight
quote a little more playing and a little less talking

(01:47:14):
and quote Merri City's embarrassed by the team's one and
five start, and added that he wished ob j made
headlines on the field instead of in interviews off the field.
Ohio State defensive end Nick Boza won't be on the
field again for the Buck guys. He's leaving school. He'll
focus on training for the NFL Draft. His dad told
the Columbus, Ohio TV station that his recovery from his
core muscle injury likely would have lasted until mid December.

(01:47:37):
And tonight, as Doug was talking about the start of
the NBA regular season, sixers in Celtics eight Eastern thunder
and Warriors ten thirty Eastern No. Russell Westbrook for Oklahoma
City tonight while Stephen Adams is a gametime decision, Doug,
what's the lint at tonight's game? There? Give you give
you guess, don't look, I'll give you a guest for
what's not the line? Did you see the line tonight's game? Um?

(01:47:59):
I think I did. It was a double digit number.
Bigger thing is we're gonna We're gonna see Gordon Hayward
tonight for the first time since last year's first game,
which was Celtics versus the Cavaliers, and said, it's Celtics
at home against the Philadelphia seventy six ers. He played
all of two minutes. I remember I I walked outside
because I was flipping burgers or something. Um no, not

(01:48:22):
not my night job, although some of you believe in
listening to the show, I should be flipping burgers, but
um uh. But I gaga outside the flip burgers and
I come back in and everybody's like, oh, and I
look at my phone and I saw the injury. No

(01:48:44):
man has ever been more disrespected than Gordon Hayward while
not playing a game. Gordon Hayward was an All Star
in the West. They beat the Clippers in Game seven
in Staples. He will is the biggest free agent signing
of the last offseason, and while not playing because he

(01:49:06):
suffered an injury similar to that of Paul George, come
back to be an All Star. Suddenly we were like, well,
you know, Gordony, would you come on the bench like
maybe the best player you have dupes. They can play
and guard four positions, They could shoot, past, defend and rebound.

(01:49:30):
What am I missing like I like Jayson Tantum a lot.
I like Jalen Brown a lot. You know what they're not.
They're not as good as Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving.
So I think the Celtics canna have a great year. Um,
I don't love to do the the bets, but it

(01:49:50):
does feel like a good bet to take the Boston
Celtics tonight at home. It just does. It was like
a simple one seventy six Ers new general manager Elton
brand So meanwhile, uh, the Sixers got JJ Reddick back,

(01:50:10):
Robert Covington, Darios start, Joel Embiide no minutes restriction with Embiid,
difference is going to be off the bench, and we'll
get a chance to see Mark l. Folts getting scary
terry all of those videos like and I'm I'm just
as guilty of it when I played. There's this thing
called game slippage. You can look in a gym with

(01:50:33):
Drew Handlon, you can look you can look great shooting
a basketball. I think there's still a hitch there in
the jump shot, but we will find out tonight. Because
no matter how good you look at an empty gym,
how good you look in preseason regular season game on
the road against scary Terry who's gonna try and rip
your heart out. We'll find out if if Mark el

(01:50:53):
Foltz has it or doesn't have it, or how far
back he actually is from from his mental hick ups
of a year ago. I think, can Ben Simmons make
a jump shot? Can they make Ben Simmons make a
jump shot? Um? I said this earlier with with Daniel Jeremiah.

(01:51:17):
It's it's my belief that they're gonna use Levan Bell
as much. This is like, hey, you have a lease
on a car and the lease is up, or you
gotta give it back. You gotta give back a comp
car or at least car at the end of the year.

(01:51:38):
But you have another car. That's perfectly fine. You already
have your next car. It's fine. You're like, yeah, I
got a couple of thousand miles. You can drive those
couple of thousand miles in the car. My brother does one.
He does the least. There's swap police and least Trader.
Have you guys ever seen any of those? So what
you can do is people try and get out of

(01:51:59):
their leases. You can pick up their lease and you know,
they've already paid the down payment. Sometimes they'll even give
you up a little bit of a bonus so that
you pick up their lease because they're moving and they
can't take it with him, or they're getting close to
being up on miles and they're just tired of their car. Anyway,
when you're paying so much of your amount of opportunities

(01:52:19):
based one on your talent and two on your salary,
the same reason Blake Bortles is not going to be
moved or you know that no one's gonna trade for
him and they're not gonna be able to cut him,
is the salary that he's owed, the salary that he
is owed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Well, the same thing
is true with leviyan Bell. You owe him that much

(01:52:42):
money and you're gonna lose him at the end of
the year. Of course you use him. This feels like
um now, it's like coun be runners interference. Was he
safe at second base? That's the big question. So the
Houston Astros, No, there's no more in the neighborhood rule

(01:53:05):
in Major League Baseball? Is baseball the only in the
neighborhood sport does anybody else have? And in the neighborhood rule.
I'm trying to think of NBA basketball. You're like, ah,
there's a lot of that with fouls, you know, kind
of close enough in regular season. But in baseball, you
used to not have to step on second base when
somebody's trying to break up a double team. You had

(01:53:27):
to be in the neighborhood, horse shoes and hand grenade, right,
But now in baseball, because of replay, you actually have
to be on the base. Yes, dan By, I almost
think that pass interference is because the refs can't see
if contact is there, so if you don't turn your
head around, you're likely to get the calls. So maybe

(01:53:48):
it's the opposite of of um being in the neighborhood.
But I mean, nine times out of ten, if the
guy doesn't have his head turned around on a past
they're gonna call interference, whether made contact or not. Yeah,
that happened on Minka Fitzpatrick twice. He broke up two
balls this way, but there's four times in which he
wasn't turned around. I think of Fitzpatrick is the rookie

(01:54:10):
for the Miami Dolphins, but it happened to him. He
got called for two p I s twice for not
turning around when the ball was on its way in
Like it may be great coverage and they may not
touch him, but it's it's kind of the opposite of
what you're talking about that you're almost guilty of it
even though you play something the right way. M Yeah, look,
I'm um. The the one thing that I found is

(01:54:33):
that sometimes TV, and it's because we're not focused on
a wide receiver the entire time, and we can't see it.
We only see it in replay a lot of times.
You can in person, you can see especially down at
field level where the refs are, you can see it
a little bit more clear as day. Like I've always thought, like, man,
that stuff happens really fast, you can miss it. But

(01:54:53):
when you're only focused on a couple of guys because
of how they split up the field. I do think
you can see p I a little bit easier. You
can see a whole a little bit easier than maybe
you can see him on television, even though television seems
to give us the best I view, I get amazed
when they miss face masks because it's so obvious to
us on TV. But the ref in that scenario or

(01:55:14):
the official that has the position, maybe isn't looking at
ball carrier? Right? Well, yes, and you know what that's like.
You know what that's like, though, Yes, you're that's like um,
when the when the home plate umpire has to rule
whether or not a guy went around, he's looking at
whether it's a ball or a strike. And now how
can you tell whether or not he broke the plane

(01:55:35):
that should really be first or third third base umpire.
So it's the same things as you point out, like that,
they're looking for a ton of other stuff, you know,
from holds and illegal blocks and all kinds of different
all kinds of plus they may be blocked off, but
they might not even be looking at the ball carrier
trying to look at at the ball. It's south to

(01:55:55):
see at the ball. You know it is the knee down,
is the elbow down? Is the ball in the ball out?
And you you don't even see the face mask? So yes,
I agree with you. We we we all look at
how do you miss that? Like? Because they're not actually
supposed to be looking at that. Bad news for one
of the worst teams in the NFL. I'll share it
with you next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports

Anytime you want all this great stuff, Let's get to
the press, the press which is brought to you by
a discovered card. We treat you like you treat you,
Dan buyer what we got? We got some baseball right now,
top of the second ending Boston leads Houston two to

(01:57:02):
one in Game three of the American League Championship Series.
First three hitters for the Red Sox got on base. JD.
Martinez had an RBI double, and then Sander Bogart's head
an ambre I ground up, putting Boston on the board.
Marvin Gonzalez answered with an RBI single, scoring Josel Tve.
But Doug, we're in the second in Houston, Red Sox
up to one on the strows. Uh this winner of

(01:57:23):
this game scores double digitson runs. Right now, it looks
like that six. I also think that it was huge
for Houston just to get one, because you don't want
Boston feeling too good about themselves with that good first ending.
We both think, and I think everybody on the crew
also thinks that the Astros are the best team so well,

(01:57:44):
and Dan Patrick apparently does. But Houston at least gets
one back and only trails by one. Dodgers Brewers tonight,
that's up Fox Sports one first pitch just after nine
o'clock Eastern time. A bunch of changes for the Dodgers
in their lineup. Not only is Austin Barnes catching for
l A, which we knew about last night, Chris Taylor
is gonna bat lead off for them employ left field.
You've got Brian Doeser starting at second base, betting fifth,

(01:58:06):
David Freese back at first base. He'll bat third tonight.
So some changes for the Dodgers who are down to one.
Fascinating stuff for the Dodgers. Obviously they've had major problems
behind the plate. That not a surprise, um and the
bullpen has been good, but Rich Hill to night the
bullpen is gonna have to be good because rich Hill,
what do you think does he make it to the

(01:58:27):
fourth inning? Out of the fourth inning? Over under ramos
on when rich Hill gets pulled, God, I hope he
goes past. If I say under under fourth inning, I
say over all right, Ever, the optimist Dan Byer, I've
got this from a Major League Baseball The Angels have
opted out of their stadium lease with the city of
Anaheim and now will negotiate with the city on a

(01:58:50):
new lease or maybe moved to a new stadium somewhere
else in southern California. Yeah, my guests would be they
the one. This is negotiation. As much as that thing
was read on. They need a new park. What'll be
interesting to see is if they build a new park,
do they do it on the site because they also
have have a sweetheart deal on a bunch of that
land there, which is I feel like that's what they

(01:59:11):
end up doing. But if not, there's one or two
other spots in Orange County where they could build. Or
do they try and move to l A, which has
always been what Alredy Morino's wanted because it increases the
value of his team. But I do feel like, um
that's that's a team that draws over three and a
half million people every year. And if you want to
keep Mike Trout, build him a brand new ballpark, but

(01:59:33):
building Orange County where he lives. And when you're fan bases.
I know there was a huge renovation, but I was
surprised to read how long ago was it? Well that
and that fourth fourth oldest ballpark in baseball, even even
after the renovation, right, like not when it was originally
Annahim Stadium built in the sixties, right, well, no, it was,
it was six six it was built, so that structure

(01:59:56):
is the fourth oldest. Only Dodger Stadium Fenway in Wrigley
are older. And no and no one says, you know
where you gotta go, you gotta go to game, You
gotta go to the Big A, Like exactly zero people
say it's a nice place to watch a game, and
they've done a nice job with it. But um, yeah,

(02:00:17):
I mean even the even the renovation was twenty years ago,
like that's that's a Turner Fields was like the same.
It's like the same, and now it's a football stadium.
The Marlins are getting rid of their home run structure
and left field and instead moving that seven story piece
of arts outside the stadium. Piece of art the you

(02:00:39):
know what that looks like. That looks like something a
rich person would have in their front yard. And you're like,
that guy's got too much money. YEP, I agree. It
looks like you would see that in the window of
a store in Laguna Beach. Right. I have my mom's
roommate in college. Um, the husband's a huge baseball fan.
He has he has bleachers from like Abbott's Field and

(02:01:00):
things like that. But in the front yard they have
a piece of artwork. And I'm like, I never forget,
you know. I was like a teenager. We pulled up
there and I was like, these people have too much money,
but you've got art in the front yard. How about this?
To the National Football ESPN, reporting Josh Allen won't play
in Week seven for the Bills because of his elbow injury.
Diana Roussini adding to her report, saying quotes, I'm also

(02:01:21):
told the Bills haven't decided who will start at quarterback.
There's a feeling in the organization that veteran could be
Derrick Anderson has to start with Sean McDermott is in
danger of losing the locker room after Dathan Peterman's latest performance.
So here's a secret, I tweeted out. I've had a
former NFL coach tell me this that the secret to
Derek Anderson's a little bit like brock Oswelder, Like even
if you know they're going to start on a Monday

(02:01:41):
or Tuesday, you don't announce it until Thursday or Friday
because they just they agonize over they can't sleep. It's
just it's like a it's like an anxiety thing. Derrick
Anderson will start this weekend for the Bills. Steelers quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger and some of his teammates want the NFL
to penalize Vantes Berfeck for some of his hits on Sunday,
including a point where Ben told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette

(02:02:03):
that Berfect told Juju smith Schuster that he'd be the
next one that he would hit after he knocked out
Antonio Brown for a little while. Well, look it wasn't
Jusis smith Schuster, the same guy that that hurt him
last year. And then student in tounted over him, like, yeah,
what Fante Perfect is not going to forget that. You're
not gonna forget that. Um so you can spend for

(02:02:24):
a lot of things, but for saying you're next, I
don't think. And finally, Doug, what do you guys say
A Saturday February ninth and we go check out Orlando
taking on Atlanta. You guys interested? Not Magic Hawks? No,
it's the opening weekend of the Alliance of American Football. Yeah,
these schedule has been announced, Saturday February ninth, Orlando against

(02:02:44):
Atlanta and San Antonio taking on San Diego. That's a
big new When is our fantasy draft for that? Is
it a Super Bowl Sunday? Maybe we'll do that and
get ready for it. Back it out there and that
was the press. This does bring to mind my thoughts

(02:03:04):
on college sports right and people like college athletes deserve
to be paid. It's like the G League, Like the
G League has better players than college basketball. Why don't
people watch the G League? Because they don't have the
history of the logos Carolina, Kentucky and Duke and the
same thing. And Alliance to American Football will have great players,

(02:03:25):
great college football players. Why won't we watch Because it's
not Alabama, it's not USC, it's not under Dame. Regardless
of the players. Vance McDonald joined us tomorrow, so too
does Greg co Sell, and we'll break down tonight in
