Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio Boom, What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fired Up and Ready Trade deadline Day in Major League Baseball,
the Dodgers have done it again. The Rangers are mad
at me and uh Lebron being trolled by Steph on
(00:23):
social media because Steph and to a lesser extent, Cavarry
were clowning him at Trevor Rees's wedding over the weekend.
Colin Kaepernick still unsigned, but will he get that call
from Baltimore Ravens the one called the Ravens need to
make that I'm sure has been made before they decide
(00:44):
if in fact they're gonna bring Cap into camp and
it's not to Ray Lewis, and it's not to anybody
has nothing to do with PC. We'll get to that
during the show, Man, we have a loaded show for you.
Matt Barnes is gonna join us. He and NBA champion
with the Golden State Warriors. Will ask him about Steph
clowning Lebron. It appeared on social media. It's spread like wildfire.
(01:05):
I'll give you my own opinion. Then Barnes will join us.
Upcoming in twenty minutes here on the show. We welcome
you in on Facebook Live as well. Let's start with
the Dodgers. The Dodgers continue to write a story book
to which I'm not sure you'd believe. Okay, I'm not
sure you'd believe if it didn't actually happen in reality.
(01:25):
They win their thirty second come from behind game last night.
I believe that's their seventy second win on the season.
It is nuts what they're doing. They have won thirty
nine of their last forty six baseball games, but last night,
to me, sorry, last night, the thirty nine of the
last forty six. Last night they topped any sort of
(01:48):
previous storybook. Okay, I'm not gonna talk about baseball all day,
with exception of the trade deadline, and I'm fascinated by
what happens next. Can they keep this alive or does
it does water finance level, I mean baseball. They talked
about one run games ultimately evening out. If it ultimately
evens out, the Dodgers are screwed in the playoffs, but
(02:09):
last night they're in the fourteenth inning. I believe they're
taking on the San Francisco Giants and the Giants stink.
I'm not gonna try and tell you this story and
make it seem like he was some Titanic battle there
in the sorry the eleventh inning, it seemed like the
fourteen that came from behind in the ninth to tie
it up. Then it goes to eleven. They give up
a run at in the top of the eleventh inning. Okay,
(02:31):
so they're now down to run again, and there their
last roster player, their last hitter that's available to pinch hit,
is Kyle Farmer. Kyle Farmer had never had a major
league at bat previously in his life. And it's not
like he's some stud prospect, right He's a catcher. He's
(02:53):
hitting like three, forty and double in Triple A this year,
nine home runs combined. He's none of He's more of
a punch and judy guy. Not that he's coming up
looking to hit forty bums. As he comes into the
Dodgers lineup, he had not swung a live bat in
a major League baseball game. He gets down oh tow
two outs bottom of the eleventh inning, and he doesn't
(03:17):
just keep the rally alive with runners at first and second,
he hits one to the corner and Dodgers Stadium. You
ever seen it. There's they can rattle around in the corner,
both runners come around to score, they win the game.
If you're Kyle Farmer, you retire right now. He's one
for one with two RBI with a game winning walk
off hit in his only at baton Major League Baseball.
(03:39):
I have I have seen amazing stories and teams find
a way to win games. I am not a Dodger fan.
I traditionally don't talk about Major League Baseball, and I'm
not gonna talk about it much more. I was at
my first UFC fight on Saturday night. My boy d
C got knocked out with a kick to the head
in the third round. I want to talk about that,
(04:00):
but this is one of those just down the street
in Hollywood. I'm not sure they would accept the script
that Cal Farmer comes up in Sunday Night by Baseball,
bottom of the eleventh inning, down to run, first at bat,
hits one that rattles around to the wall and they
score two runs. I haven't seen what the Dodgers are
doing ever before in my life. I just feel like
(04:22):
it should be mentioned because we we are in this
We are in this time in sports to which the
only thing that matters is what you do in the postseason.
Nothing else matters. But it should matter because this story
is awesome. It is. It is an amazing summer for
the Dodgers. What happens in the fall. I don't think
Kershaw is not healthy. They're trying to get another arm today.
(04:43):
I don't know what they'll do in the fall, but
the summer remarkable. And then the juxtaposition in baseball with
baseball letting in a juicer Pud Rodriguez, Yes, thirteen gold gloves, Yes,
also a p E D guy. Everybody knows it was
mentioning Canseco's book and other stuff. He's never come out
(05:06):
and said no, absolutely, I did not do it. Not
that that would matter, because even the guys that tested positive,
even the guys that ultimately came clean, they started out
by saying no, I didn't do it. Pudge was beloved.
But Pudge is a steroid guy, and it's really hard
to get behind the plate every night unless he gets
some help. I believe that my Piazza was a steroid guy. Hey,
(05:26):
but the and then you, I mean, you have you
have guys that saw incredible production like ped Rodriguez until
they started testing positive for p D. S Now Pudge
is also a former Texas Ranger, and the Rangers had
this sorrid history of give me your week, your tigert
wretched masses of steroid guys, Alex Rodriguez, jo Can Saco,
(05:48):
Raphael Palmero. I'm I could go through a laundry list
of players and some pictures who have been linked to
p e D usage and have played for the Texas Rangers.
Yesterday they celebrate Adrian Beltras three hit and now I
am a persona non grata. I am the I am
(06:08):
the devil as far as current former Texas Rangers, and
I had no idea. Texas Rangers baseball fans, Okay, I
had no idea. But let me just lay this out
for you. Okay, there's a high percentage of baseball players
(06:28):
that have tested positive that are from the Dominican Republic.
I'm not making this up. This is not some stereotype
of Dominican players. If it's a stereotype, it's created based
upon the actual statistical data that a high percentage of
the players who have been suspended from Major League Baseball
for testing positive preties came from the Dominican Republic. One,
(06:49):
there's a high density of baseball players that come from
the Dominican Republic to play Major League Baseball. But two,
it's legal, it's over the counter, and there's a different
culture there than there is here. Beltras from the Dominican Republic.
Beltrey has also been as or more productive into his
mid and now late thirties as he was in his twenties.
That is what we were told was a telltale sign. Hey,
(07:11):
guys have a tendency to age and then their production
starts to wayne and fall off a cliff. That hasn't
happened with Adrian Beltray. He does, in fact play for
the Texas Rangers, which you could say, well, it's a
home run hitters park as opposed to playing at Dodger
Stadium where he played or Seattle. But the fact is,
with the exception of one year with the Dodgers when
he's twenty five, he hadn't hit thirty home runs. The
(07:31):
one year was during the steroid era and it was
a contract year. Did he did he pull a Dee Gordon.
I'm not saying I know on equivocally Adrian Beltray did it.
I'm saying, Hey, we've all been fooled before, and we
have some markers, right, we have some markers that could
tell could paint the tail of a guy who could
(07:54):
possibly be ahead of the curve and hasn't tested positive
for it. And it I'm I'm a human being. I'm
allowed to wonder because baseball has been a beenes uh,
a sport that has historically been ruined by PD guys.
I can't personally consider Barry Bonds the all time home
run king, even though I saw him hit more home
(08:15):
runs than anybody else, because he did it mostly all
the home runs a huge density with the help of
performance enhancing drugs. Baseball was all about history, was all
about stats. Last night was a great celebration of history
and stats and three thousand hits and a beloved Dominican player.
But I can't just sit there and going, Okay, no,
he's better in his thirties and he was his twenties,
(08:37):
and I don't suspect I do so whether it's former
UH Texas Ranger Michael Young or current Texas Rangers tweeting
at me, there's no backing down from anything. I'm a
human being and a thoughtful one, and one that follows
and loves baseball. I'm not gonna be fooled twice. I'm
gonna suspect, and it's not because of me. It's because
(09:00):
of all of you baseball guys who turned your head
when they were using steroids, and all of you baseball
guys that said, now Pudge belongs in and others don't,
even though we all knew what Pudge was doing. And frankly,
my Piazza right like, Piazza hit over thirty home runs?
Was it like six times in his career? Did you
know that since steroids have been tested for in baseball,
(09:21):
there hasn't been one catcher hit thirty home runs in
a year. Did you know that? And Piazza is is
either the greatest home run hitting catchers possible, but he
didn't like six times because it wears you down, and
what allows you to not get worn down the use
to perform dancing drugs. I'm not gonna be fooled twice.
(09:43):
I'm gonna suspect, and most people do. And just because
he's your boy doesn't mean you shouldn't suspect as well. Well,
we're friends. He's a great guy. Okay, there's plenty of
great any Pett. It's a great guy. Any Pett was
a juicer and then lied about it and then in
front of a grand jury's remember Roger Clemmins might have,
might not have. Everybody says he's a great guy. Alright,
(10:08):
quickly we got breaking news. Let's go to David Gascon.
David breaking news from Fox Sports. Doug sticking with Major
League Baseball. It's a done deal, and Jack Curry of
the Yes Network has just reported that the Yankees have
traded four Sonny Gray and also one point five million
dollars in international bonus money. In exchange, Oakland is getting
(10:29):
three players, just named by Jeff Passon of Yahoo's Sports.
So done deal for Sonny Gray. Obviously a right handed
picture that New York needs for postseason play. Thank you look.
Sonny Gray also under contract for a couple of years.
So though the Yankees are probably parting ways with prospects,
they're getting a guy who they can count on. And
this was the Yankees plan all along. They knew what
the trade deadline. If they were there, they could add
(10:52):
an arm, they could add some salary. All right, Matt
barn is gonna join us up coming next I'm gonna
ask him about Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving owning Lebron James.
Here here's my quick thoughts. Okay, how could you make
fun of Lebron James? How couldn't you make fun of
Lebron James? You put something out on social media about
(11:13):
working out and make it faces, you're going to get clowned.
That's where memes come from. I'm I'm guessing that if
Lebron James has real friends, and I think he has
a lot of real frends he surrounds himself with, they
probably clowned him about the video. But does it expose
(11:37):
that Kyrie has been done with Lebron for a long time? Personally,
I like that it's a rivalry. Steph doesn't like Lebron.
That's cool. Lebron doesn't like Steph. We've known this for
a while. Remember the Calves did the did the tombstones?
Uh to walk over the death of Steph Curry at
a Halloween party last year. Rivalries are good. Hatred is
(11:58):
good in sports, making fun of each other is good. Okay,
it wasn't personal in terms of family, your kids or
wives or whatever. It's making fun of a video that
Lebron James chose to post himself. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at
three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. Matt Barne joining us on
(12:20):
The Doug Gotlip Show. Were you at Trevor Rees's wedding
this weekend? I was, alright? So was that you at
the camera work? No? Ictually? Uh, Travis Scott too too
long to get there, So I see, I was a
little older. I checked it a little early. You checked
in a little early. Um, what what should we take like? Look,
you've been in the league a long time. Um, so
there's been all different takes on staff and to a
(12:43):
lesser extent, Kyrie clouding Lebron over something he put out
on social media his first day working out after the
NBA Finals. What's your thoughts on it? I think it's
you know, I think it's over exaggerated. I think that
there's guys in much around having a good time. I
think there's kind of been, you know, a little bit
of competitive banter between Golden State in Cleveland, you know,
since they they've played in the final for the last
(13:04):
few years, and you know, Lebron had his fair share,
you know, steps and steps. That's this thing, Draymond. You know,
everyone has a little something to say. So I think
the fact that the media caught it and then you know,
Kyrie happened to be there, it kind of blew it
out of proportion. Yeah, it's one of those things where like,
what is Kyrie supposed to do? Dude, Like, hey, that's
not cool. Not cool my teammate on the other hand,
(13:25):
because we know what else is going on, or we
just like, look, no one's denied that Kyrie wants that.
Kyrie hasn't denied it, no one has said he absolutely
doesn't want out, so he can, uh, we can suspect
that there's there's a whole lot of truth to the rumors.
But I guess, I I guess we have to ask ourselves, like,
if you're in that position and somebody starts clowning your
friend for something they put out on social media, like,
(13:46):
are you really gonna like stop them and shut it
down or act? Well? I mean, I just think and
I think, you know, I think even step and lebron
a friends, you know what I mean. I think, like
I said, I think this thing it's over. Exad is.
I mean, you don't have the locker room and if
anybody can get it, you know what I mean. That's
with you know, Shack and Kobe and people talk, you know,
track to them and make fun of them. Lebron. There's
no exception to anybody, you know what I mean. In
(14:07):
the Unlocked Room and Golden State, everybody got it, including
the coaches, you know what I mean. So I just
think happened. It happened to be Stephan Kyrie, you know,
with all the stuff going on, and then it happened
to be filmed. So I don't think it's every good deal. Uh.
There there is this sense around the league that nobody
can beat the Warriors, at least from fans um. But
what's your sense of how beatable? Like You're part of
(14:29):
a championship team won that won four games to one
against the Calves. Uh do you think that's that's what
other people in the NBA believe. I mean, they're they
got something specially there and whether they can be beat
I don't know. I felt like last year when we lost,
not to take away credit from other teams, but you know,
there were a few good point to what we kind
(14:50):
of felt like we left the game go instead of
you know, as actually getting beat so um, you know,
with them revamping their you know, their bench this year
and what they have with their core, they're gonna up
a good a little run for a while. Yeah, it
feels that. It feels that way, and it feels like
fans are like, dude, just postpone it. Like, if you're
gonna make a run, you might want to, you know,
set set yourself up for a couple of years now.
(15:10):
If like if Clay Clay could be the only guy
to leave from May, maybe maybe that's the way you
get into it. Matt Barnes joining us on The Doug
Otlip Show on on Fox Sports Radio. What about the
Kyrie s top you're at You're at the wedding. Guys
had to be talking about it, right, Honestly they weren't.
It's funny then got guys weren't you know what I mean?
(15:30):
We don't think it's it's I think it's strange when
you know, when the when the NBA cuts you, trade
you waved you. It's a business. But when players want
to take their control of their brand and their happiness
and go elsewhere and they're the villain, so It's something like,
it's players, we understand, I mean, who want to be happy.
You know, Katie took less money to go to a
(15:51):
team to win a championship, you know what I mean,
So it should it's the new age at the NBA.
I understand that. You know, there may be hate from
the fans and a lot of us talking about it
just is what it is, you know what I mean.
We we we want players to be happy, and he
wants to be happy. You know, my hats off to
what what did you learn about Kevin Durant that you
didn't know before he was your teammate. He's just the
(16:13):
killer man and I really already knew it. I just
got to see every single day. But you're not having
to guard him and being friends with him. You know,
I knew what kind of duty was, and I was
just really happy that, you know, all the people that
talk down on him and bauted him and and talk bad,
you know, he really just got to let us play
do the talking. And one of the championship. It's weird
because there's always going to be this group of people
(16:35):
that think he took the easy way out. My perspective
has been this Matt All he wanted was the space
to show his talents. Right like when you're playing when
you're in Oklhoma City, like Andre Robertson, they don't have
to guard him. Now you got to play one on two.
It makes it probably more difficult all he and and
there was pressure for him to deliver. He only delivered.
He did so against the best player in the world
(16:57):
at the most important points. He he was the best
player in the fourth core at the same position as
Lebron James. But we saw this with Lebron in Miami.
Even after he won his first title. He got he
got respect, but it was like begrudging respect and then
ultimately it came around to, oh, yeah, he is the
best player. How long do you think kind of the
American sports fan comes around on just how special KD is.
(17:21):
It's going to be soon and that's with all due
respect to Lebron, but you know KD is on the
fields and people get how expicient he is. He doesn't
have He rarely have an off shooting nun that's he
been leaked every night. And the three foot one, I mean,
there's nice for his higher in both categories and to
be that big and that skill at you know, a
six seven ft guy playing a really two guards skills
(17:44):
and the other to shoot the ball, hand of the ball.
And he really got to see the full package of
Kevin Durant this year, the way from past the ball
moved without the ball obviously do what he does with
the ball, but then off the fan, you know, I mean,
he which just happened. He was out there knowing that
everybody had each other's back, everyone on the same plage,
and that's when he's really to see the best chemn Durnt.
You you know, the probably the best team you're on
(18:04):
previous to this, or one of the best teams was
when you were on the Clippers, when you guys seem
to be primed to make a run at a title.
It never happened. Why did it never happen with that group?
Um Chemistry, chemistry was a key And now seeing you
know it really makes me think. I mean, that was
the first thing I thought about, what I mean, outside
(18:25):
the week believe team. I thought about this Clipper team
that you know had to put you know, going to
stay down the year before they won the championship, and
how we had all the pieces and why we couldn't
you know, get over that step. And I've been playing
with the Warriors and seeing the chemistry to have in
that locker room, from top to bottom, players, staff, organization.
(18:47):
I was able to put my finger on in this chemistry. Okay,
So how likely is Chris Paul to have that chemistry
when he needs the ball? James Harden needs the ball,
and they're talking about adding Carmelo Anthony who needs the ball.
I understand the chemistry is more than just about what
happens on the floor. It's about what happens off the floor,
and as you mentioned, it goes all the way up
to the top of the organization, to the you know,
(19:08):
to the to the managers and to the equipment guys.
I get all that, but I guess what I'm asking
is you think it'll work. I think, um, you know,
with Chris already being a smart veteran player, but knowing
how Chris is, and then you know, just knowing Mellows
is a smart vetteran. I think they know going in
there that that's still James's team, and I think that
they need to have their game off what he does,
(19:31):
because I think he was able to show that he
is arguably top two or three in the world, and
at what he does on the offensive, then I think
the guys going in there are going to kind of
have to take the back scene. I think they know it.
Like you said, they're veterroom player. Then understand and learn
how to play with James, because James is the special
silent at Barnes join us in the Doug Gotlip Show.
I wasn't invited to play in the flag football game.
(19:54):
I'm kind of still him. That's still room. If you
want to love to have you, man, I don't want
to be like a late and I don't want to
like it's like it's like something like, oh, Matt, you're
having a birthday party? Can I cut? I just added
James Harden at the wedding two days ago. So I mean,
I mean the late just because your lad doesn't mean
you're any lesser, lesser, more important than anybody. I mean,
we're just taking people out as they come. Man, it's
(20:15):
more a great call. So you got some time on Sunday,
come out. I'll tell you. Because I lost my dad
to cancer, I know this is uh, this is Athletes
against Cancer. Matt Barnes and Snoop Dogg host the Athletes
Versus Cancer fourth annual celebrity flag football game. I'll just
tell you like that, one of the great moments of
my life, all right was Um, I played for the
Lakers in their summer league and after the game, Snoop
(20:37):
Dogg told my dad to tell me what's up right,
and my dad came up to me. My my dad
was like, Uh, some Snoop Snoopy dog told me to say,
what's like you talked to Snoop Dogg. He knew my name,
so I know it's it's you and stoop Um for
people who don't know, why is this cause so important
to you? Unfortunately lost my mom to cancer two thousand eight.
(20:57):
He lost his uncle, Um you thousand swelled about in
thirteen around that time, and Uh, it was just something
that was dear to both our hearts. Um. He's a
big football playing I'm a huge football fan, and about
five years ago we put this game together. We took
a break last year because the Olympics and a lot
of the guys I have playing with in the Olympics
that we're back this year and we're amising the money
for cancer. Um and when we have a hell of
(21:19):
a list of celebrities man private and it's not just
saying that's my game, but I haven't seen a list
of celebrities like this for one game in a long time.
So it's gonna be fun weekend. So you're back there
spinning who's the quarterback? We're looking? We're still working when
we're We've reached out to Mike Vick. We have a
couple of other calls with to mother that we try.
I try to get a former NFL quarterbacks. We've had
Warreen Moon in the past, Rotten Ke, Kurt Warner, they
(21:40):
got don't they bust somebody's face? Like, doesn't somebody talk
like like Mike, I've been playing guys didn't really play
like I mean football. It's my first clos so, I
mean that's why I picked this game. But a lot
of these NBA guys gonna really get out there and play.
And you know, we have some other celembrites that that
they can really play. So it's it's a fun time.
It should be a fun time, all right. That's August Sick,
of course. It's uh at. Matt Barnes a stoop dog
(22:02):
host the Athletes Versus Cancer Fourth Annual celebrity football game.
It's at John Burrows High School. That's in Burbank, California.
You can find out more information go to athletes Verse
Cancer dot com. Matt, this is a great cause. Whatever
you need. If you need something like you need a
token white dude. All we need the token white dude.
I got, I got, I got no. I got no
problem with that. I will. I will sacrifice all my
(22:23):
ego and be your bench warmer. You can check me
in when we're up three touchdowns late. I appreciate that, Doug,
thank you very much. As Matt Barnes. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug gott Leaves Show weekdays
at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. So the Ravens
may need a quarterback. Joe Flacco has got a bad buck.
There's some dispute over how long he'll be out. And
(22:44):
Ryan Mollott sucked in his first day of practice through
what felt like a million recorded as five interceptions. And
Ryan Mallet has been one of those guys all the
talent in the world, not the intangibles, and hasn't been
And the Ravens like, wait, we might need another guy.
Steve Bashati is their owner. He said this in regards
to the potential signing Colin Capertin who I said last
(23:05):
week and Ryan Music, you weren't here. If you're listening
to us is our producer. He was in Hawaii. Um,
if he didn't hear it. If you didn't hear and
you're listening to the Doug Gotlip Show for the first
time with the podcast, which you should download, they'll be
afraid to rate us. I said that if it doesn't
happen here, I'm not sure it happens this year. Greg
Roman was the offensive coordinator. He was his offensive coordinator
(23:25):
in San Francisco. You need a rabbi in the room.
You need somebody who swears by your talent, swears by
you as a human being, swears by your leadership. Remember
he struggled with leadership in San Francisco before all this protests.
And then John Harball's head coach brother Jim Harbaugh, of
(23:46):
course he played for in San Francisco, so he has
two rabbis in the room. They need a quarterback. Flacco
has got a bad back. Flacco is coming off his
arguably his worst year as a professional. Heard his need
two years ago back this year, like you need a
dude who's ready to go. It just makes sense. Steven Shotty,
(24:07):
their owner were very sensitive to it. We're moniting it
and we're still, as Ozzy Newsom says, we're scrimmaging it.
H We're trying to figure out what's the right tact
pray for us. The pray first thing is just odd, right,
Like wait, you're trying to figure out if you're gonna
sign a quarterback? Like prayers? All right? Ravens officials say
(24:30):
they've spoken to Kaepernick and he's committed to playing football.
That's a big, big thing because people in the NFL
are like, do you want to play football or do
you just you want to make a difference in society?
Because and I think this sometimes the message gets um
gets skewed a little bit, and you're like, well, why
does he have to answer questions about if he wants
to change society, because like, look, this is the job.
(24:54):
This is the job. You can't do both. They're just
you don't have the time day, you have to focus
your energy. Do you want to play football? He's like, yes,
I want to play football. We do want to win games.
And I'm not sure he is going to help us
do that. We're monitoring Joe Flacco in his back injury.
We've talked to Joe about it. We're monitoring Ryan Mallett
(25:15):
keeping our door open. We've talked about r G three
and bringing him in for a workout. Apparently they reached
out to ray Lewis trying to get gauge what fans
would react, kind of trying to gauge a lot of things.
Do you want to know who they're really talking to?
Joe Flacco? You're like, what do you mean, Joe flat Like, look,
(25:37):
Joe Flacco, he hasn't had success with Greg Roman. Okay,
different offensive cording, a different quarterback coach when he won
a Super Bowl. And though he has the big contract
and he has respect of of John Harball, he is
a pretty good chance he doesn't want that. And you
(25:58):
might think, well, it's about the flag protests, and I'm
sure there's a modicum of it, But what Bhatti can't
say is like, hey, we got when we asked ray Lewis.
We're not asking ray Lewis about the fans and about
protesting and about about the the movement, if you will,
we're asking fans. We're asking him what it would be
like in the locker room with Kaepernick, who's not seen
(26:19):
as a great leader but has had success in the NFL.
Flacco wasn't great last year. Flacco might not even been
good last year. We don't need anybody taking We need
the unquestioned leader of our football team to be Joe Flacco.
And if bringing in Colin Kaepernick, who may or may
not actually help us win, hurts the ability for Joe
Flacco to lead, then we're not going to do it.
(26:44):
I've no doubt in my mind zero that they're talking
to Flacco and that Flacco's word maybe more so than
what fans think matters a ton to Biscotti, to Ozzy
knew Some to John Harball. I look me personally, if
I'm Flacco and I have supreme self confidence, you know what.
(27:06):
Bring him in? Don't care? Don't care. And Kaepernick hasn't
been good thirty second in in the NFL and completion
percentage of the last two years thirty one in the
NFL in total QBR. Forget about win loss. I don't
put that on him. He was on a bad football team, okay,
but he hasn't been great. We haven't figured out how
(27:30):
much money he wants. We haven't figured out if he's
willing to accept to roll as a backup. But more
than anything, we don't know and we won't know if
Joe Flacco wants him to be hired as his backup,
because we have no idea how that would sit in
that locker room or sit with Flacco. And you can't
have Flacco's leadership question if you want to get the
best out of Flacco. Fox Sports Radio has the best
(27:51):
sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our
shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within the
I Heart Radio app UFC is. It's brutal. It is brutal.
I mean it's and I've been to boxing matches before,
and for whatever reason, it feels more violent, even though
(28:11):
there's an equal level of violence. Especially it's more just,
you know, hand to head with boxing. Um, here's what
I think separates boxing and ultimate fighting from any other sport.
I thought Daniel Cormier was winning, if nothing else, it
was it was about high, it was about I think
one of the judges had him winning. Two of them
(28:32):
had it as a draw through two rounds. But it
looked like it was going to be a really, really
good fight. Jon Jones is the only one that's beaten him,
and he's a former champion who lost his belt because
he tested he had the cocaine problems, cocaine charges. And
Daniel Cormier only had one loss to John Jones, whom
(28:53):
he had outplayed, out fought early in their in their
first fight, only to be beaten late. It felt like
he was gonna go five. It felt like he was
going to be one of those all times. It was
really and and Cormier was kind of playing into the
crowd and anytime John Jones would try and punch him
and it looked like he came close, he was shaking
his head. It's kind of a showman. It was great.
(29:16):
And you know, half of the crowd is channing d
c Half half the crowd is channing John Jones. And
it was a lie. And the rest of the fights,
you know, one of the like, uh was it Chris Cyborg?
I mean it was, it was. It was just a
matter of when not if it was. I was just
that was brutal. The other woman just took an absolute beating,
(29:36):
like a savage beating, but she lasted three rounds. She
was just a punching bag for three rounds, and then
Tyrone Woodley was another champion, Like he was great, but
he was just too athletic and too elusive for basically
a guy who was trying to take him to the ground.
And it was the fewest number of strikes thrown in
a championship fight and everybody was booing, So it wasn't
great energy until the actual main event, which was unbelievable.
(30:01):
Here's what separates that sport from many other sports. It
went from fever pitched, can't miss it, unbelievable to holy cow,
it's over. Like it's over. Like football games feel like
they're over, but there's still time in the clock. Baseball
games feel like they're over unless it's the bottom of
the ninth inning, right, Basketball games like, oh, it's over.
(30:24):
We all say it's over, but it's not actually over
until it's over. No, no, no, no. It was a
great fight. It was a fairly even fight, and then
one kick to the head and it happens. You know,
that's the the life comes at you fast. Life comes
at you fast in that octagon like it was over
in a heartbeat. Um, And then there's the conversation about
(30:49):
should Joe Rogan have interviewed him and Rogan. It sounded
like didn't want to interview them, but they told me
interview him. Ah, I frankly thought it was incredible. I
thought the emotion of it was incredible. Was he can cussed? Sure,
but that that if he shouldn't conduct an interview because
(31:11):
he's concussed, that's on the doctor. That's not on Joe Rogan,
that's not on and that's on Dana White. That's on
the doctor. Like it's a neurological specialist job to come
in there and go he can shut him down, get
him to somewhere dark, Like Cormier wanted to leave the
octagon because he was so mad. They stopped it. Then
(31:33):
he was completely in console, but they tried to get
him a sit down. He didn't want to sit down,
like and yeah, he was interviewed and he should have
been concussed, and maybe he shouldn't shouldn't have talked, but
he wanted to. And the person that should stop him
is a doctor, not podiatrists. No offensive podiatrists. I know
they went to medical school, not chiropractor, not even a
(31:54):
psychiatrist or a psychologist psychiatrists a doctor, psychologist or not
the like a medical professional that I'm sure is ringside
that is supposed to go like, hey, Easton kind of
shut him down on anybody ask questions. I don't put
any of the blame on Joe Roke and d c
is a friend, and I felt crest fallen for him,
(32:16):
Like there's one of those deals to where it's so funny. Uh,
the whole world today is reacting to Steph Curry making
fun of Lebron James for Lebron James flexing and lifting
weights on on on social media, right on on Instagram,
But it's like cool to make fun of Daniel Cormier,
who won his concusting too had to be crest fallen
off over losing a title fight to a guy that's
(32:38):
the only guy's beating him and beating him twice, and
like if you were there, I said Cormia was winning.
John Jones is just too athletic for him. He just is.
He's just better. He's just better. And I think that realization,
especially for Cormier, who has had an incredibly successful wrestling
(32:59):
career into an incredibly successful mixed martial arts career. The
idea that like I can keep fighting, but what is
the point this guy is better than me. I'm gonna
get myself killed in my late thirties instead. I just
shud Like all of that culminating was what the tears
are from? Like that was real sports. That's something I
actually want to see. I actually thought it was good.
(33:20):
And if he shouldn't have conduct an interview, that's on
a neurologist to decide not Joe Rogan. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays
at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio app. Dodgers do have a
loaded farm system. Of course, we've seen um and we've
seen kind of the collups even this year. Right obviously
(33:40):
Bellinger has had an unbelievable, unbelievable season as well as
Clarke has two. So you look at what the Dodgers
are doing. They go in, they get you darvish, you
would think you darvish and assuming they get Kershaw back
now it allows them to Now it allows them to
(34:03):
try and capitalize on the great regular season with the
potential great postseason still like Kenley Jansen and they've had
just this magical, magical season. It's gonna be weird though
if they don't win the World Series because uh, and
I think disappointing to many people. But I mentioned this, um,
(34:24):
I think a week and a half ago when I
was hosting for Cowherd. Like the reality of it is, Uh,
the reality of it is very simple that like, I
don't think anybody believes they're that good, right, like that good?
The l A Dodgers are seventy four and thirty one
(34:46):
Set one, and while they're run differential is plus, they've
scored a hundred and eighty five more runs than their
opponent and they've swept four They've swept fourteen series this year.
They've been utterly, in completely dominant in terms of wins
and losses. But the fact is that for their record
(35:06):
being as as great as it is, the run differential
is not that great. For example, the Houston Astros are
sixty eight and thirty six and they have a plus
one sixty one. Dodger want a ton of one run games.
They want a ton of comform behind games, and those
have a tendency to even themselves out. Now, they should
be better once they get Darvish stands the reason, right, Um,
(35:32):
but it's gonna be fascinating to see exactly how they
do in the postseason, because let's say they win one
right now, like they're on pace of one fifteen. Let's
say they went a d fifteen games. That's an unbelievable year.
And yet we have gotten to this place in our
sports society to which, yeah, that's great, but you didn't
win the World Series, but like, well, you know we lost.
(35:55):
There was just one inning, and it's like it's it's
like like Clayton Kershaw Kerkshaw has actually been really good
in the post season with exception of the seventh inning,
and then when you combined it with his utter insure
dominance for the last half decade in baseball, you're like, wow,
this is like the most dominant picture. Yeah, but he's
had these terrible post season like he is that these
terrible seventh innings, And I mean even Pedro Martinez, who
(36:23):
was the most dominant right handed pitcher I've ever seen. Right,
I'm not saying that there aren't more dominant right handed pitchers,
and I'm not saying that there aren't uh more electric
right handed pitchers throughout time in baseball or that you've
seen for me my lifetime. When Pedro Martinez was at
his peak. He's the best I've seen right hand pitcher.
(36:47):
But remember Pedro, once you got to a hundred pitches
in the playoffs, we saw what happen when Grety Little
didn't take him out. The next year when the when
the Red Sox came from behind, he still struggled. Once
you got past a hundred pitches. The only difference was
their bullpen was better. And look, they were down three
games none for a reason. But that's a that's a
(37:12):
that's a big boy move right there. That the Dodgers
sitting there and they got a huge ship count, and
there you know what we're gonna We're going in. We're
going in, boys, We're going in. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug gott Leaves Show weekdays at
three pm Eastern noon Pacific. Jason lock in for he's CBSS,
NFL and side. I'd encourage you to follow him on
(37:34):
Twitter at Jason lock in For. You can see him,
of course on their pregame show. You can see him
all across the dial and read his work at CBS
Sports dot com. Jail See how are you, buddy? Uh?
Just just living the dream, Okay, so help me through
the Baltimore Ravens. Right. I started when I heard that
they might need a quarterback, right, I was like, well,
(37:56):
Greg Romans there, that's the rabbi in the room. He's
worked with Kaepernick before. Or you got John Harball, he
can call Jim. But then you know, you start to think, okay,
well maybe Flacco will be back. They got Ryan Mallett.
Where where are they legitimately with Kaepernick A right? I
mean there's playing foot see, I guess, but I have
(38:17):
never thought and still don't think it's going anywhere for
a couple of reasons. Day. I was just there a
few days ago. I just checked in the situation again.
They still believe Joe Flacco stones football is in a
matter of days, not weeks. So if that's the case,
all they needed was a camp arm, which I guess
they've now gone through too. They signed the guy from
some freaking indoor league I've never even heard of, and
(38:38):
then they cut him and I guess brought somebody else set.
So you're not looking for a Colin Kaepernick there, You're
you're looking for a camp arm. And then they have
an issue at salary cap where they're only about slightly
less than a million under the cat so you know,
to bringing in Colin Kaepernick and he's there to try
to save your season, that's more than that minimum contract.
(38:59):
H And you know they keep talking on the both
sides of the mouth about well, you know it could
be a distraction and all that goes into it, you know,
is it gonna be worth it? And does the city
really want it? And they had to pay this lip
service because of to your point, hardballs unique relationship. I mean,
Hardball is a guy who came out at the owner's
meetings in the spring and said, there's no way he's
(39:20):
not being blackballed. And of course he's not being black
ball and it's just about football and somebody's gonna need
a quarterback and they're gonna sign him. So he couldn't
pretend that he wasn't available like most of the team,
most of the league is just pretended he's not a
free agent. He's just like want some exemple lists or something.
So that they had to pay it some lip service.
But ultimately I don't expect him to do anything unless
(39:41):
three or four days from now, Placas can't throw and
something feels worse and he gets an m R I
and they find something structural, then you're in a situation where, yeah,
Ryan Mallett's not gonna not gonna save people jobs there,
and Kaepernick has a better chance too. It is a
game of desperation the team. If there is one that
reaches that that spiration point of it's either Kaepernick or
(40:02):
Whitehurst or r G three. And we think we're a
playoff team and we need one of these guys to
play more than just a couple of weeks to try
to win US football games. Then they get signed. You know,
That's how he gets signed. If that doesn't happen, I
don't think he will get signed, is it? What's the
percentage of it? That is the the perception because of
the protest, what's the percentage of it? Which is because
(40:24):
what I've heard is also like nobody knows how much
he wants to make, like when he says starter, he
wants starter money or somewhere in that neighborhood of starter money.
And then you also have that you know, he's kind
of a unique fit for the offense and even though
he's seen some success, he's not going to fit into
every offense. Like, what what are the percentages in terms
of how much the protests and some of the side
side the distraction is the reason he's not in the league. Yeah,
(40:48):
I don't know if I buy the fit. I mean,
he's got to be more of a fit than Austin
Davis Folds or Luke McCown. I mean, when you start
talking about you know, there's over a hundred quarterbacks on
the contract right now, they all fits. I mean I
think it's I mean, he's better than Ryan Mallett, and
the Ravens have to know that as evaluators, but they're
comfortable with Mallett. And you know, Mallet's been around there
(41:11):
for a few years. And even though he's done things
that I would say, I affect the football and this
had missed a flight when he was actually like playing
for a team, I mean as a quarterback, like I'd say,
he's actually done things that are far more of a
tangible distraction or had actual ramifications on a team on
a football field, more so than name than Kaepernick's done.
But it's it's not a football I I mean, I
(41:34):
don't know how you could say there are a hundred
guys who do this for a living who were better
than him. And then to the point about money, it's
really easy to find out make an offer. He can't
find himself. Nobody's worked him out. If you don't know
what kind of shape he's in, work him out, you
don't know how much money he wants to make. Make
him an offer, see if they'll take him. That hasn't
(41:55):
happened yet either. Jason lack Caampora joining us on the
Doug Gotlib Show. Right, let's go, let's let's stick in
that same area of the country. Um, how does this
redskin thing play out? I mean, you know, lost in
the Kaepernick discussion and some of these other is what
happened a couple of weeks ago where Bruce Allen can't
even pronounce Kirk Cousin's name correctly, right, kids call him
(42:17):
kirk Kirk, Kirk Kurt. And meanwhile, like, look, we we
made him an offer and he chose to go another way.
In your opinion, how do you think this plays out?
I think take a franchise McGain. I mean, we can
say all we want about rational people and rational teams
and what makes sense and what makes common sense and
what makes fiscal sense, but like dirt, you know, nobody
(42:40):
thought it made sense the franchise and twice I then
go have a so keep being kirk Cousins. I don't
have a Kirk Cousin's years and no franchising, and that
couldn't be the precursor to a sign and trade. Or
don't just play him thirty plus a million dollars for
next year, because well, we got to spend it on somebody.
And lately the only people who have gotten long term
deals at market value there are Trent Williams, who is
(43:02):
a stub left tackle on a former top draft pick
and you had to and Josh Norman, who you could
argue we said they overpaid for and who fell in
their lap because Dave Gentleman kicked him with the curbin
in April. So I mean that's it. Look at what
else they do. It's all one in two year sort
of value plays. They're afraid to commit to people. It's
like they don't want to be locked in on anything,
so they can't say we paid them too much. I
(43:24):
don't know, Doug. I mean, you can't let them leave
for a fourth route Tom pick after all this, and
that to me is even crazier than paying him thirty
two million dollars next season for one for one year work. Um.
The New York Giants have Odell Beckham Jr. Which is
a spectacular talent. Last week, he said that he wanted
to be the highest paid player in the entire league. Look,
(43:44):
I would like to be the highest paid radio host
in the entire country too. We can all ask for things.
The reality of it is, position wise, Uh, he's he's
locked in at a lower rate. What's reasonable. The Giants
have said, like, look, he's gonna play, we love him,
we're gonna keep him, We're gonna pay him. But what's
what's reasonable in terms of breaking the bank and yet
understanding that he's still just a wide receiver. I think
(44:08):
you should be the highest paid wide receiver in the game.
The Steelers are kind of thinking that will be the
case too, and right now they did the deal with
Antonio Brown. He's younger than Antonio Brown. Um, you know
he's not that Antonio is not in the prime of
his career. But this really should be entering into a
sweet spot for Odell Beckham. And through any gauge, any
on field gauge you want to use, film numbers, metrics,
(44:32):
He's he's there with Jerry Rice and whoever else you
want to put them with in terms of, you know,
most productive first three years in the league. And remember
he came in injured and missed whole lot of time
that which should have been the most sort of critical
incubation time of his whole career. And he's still right
there historically significantly. So I mean, they're going to have
(44:53):
to pay him that they know it, he knows it.
How much more they go? In question is how much
more than Antonio of Brown does he get? And I'm
sure he's going to try to push for you know,
in the eighteen to twenty at range where that's usually
just for quarterbacks and and frankly, I don't know that
he gets there, but hopeing you know, pleasantly, you know,
helpfully in the mid teams there somewhere you mentioned the
(45:16):
Pittsburgh Steelers. Levy on Bell still a no show, Mike
Tomlin not going to talk about guys who aren't there
stands a reason ultimately he'll show up and play on
the tender. Right, Yes, I mean it's twelve million bucks
if you're not gonna get doing anything else. And Tomlin
had a good relationship with him. They speak regularly. He's
going to come in and sign a tenor it's just
a matter of when they have urged him, Hey, don't,
(45:38):
don't do it after the fourth preseason game. You know,
don't do it with only a week of practices before
the regular season. It won't help you because you still
need that long term payday. And it won't help us
because if you get a soft tissue injury, if you
pull a hammy, if you pull a plod right off
the bat trying to prove he didn't need training camp,
that sets everybody back. So I think if, if, if
they could cajole him to come back aroundness third preseason
(46:00):
game and maybe take a snap or two in the
fourth one, but had two or three weeks of practice
time to put that bass on um, you know, then
that's about the best they could hopeful hope for. But
in the meantime, the guy was just there. Over the week.
I was on Saturday Sunday, the kid Connor at a pitch,
looks really good. He got a ouch you on his shoulder.
They don't think it's gonna be anything long term. So
(46:21):
they got now Davis there can return and do something,
gadget stuff whatever. So It's not like it's the end
of the world. They've got a good offensive lining. You
have to respect a pass game all over the field.
But yeah, I hope be there. I mean that it's
still remarkable me that he turned down what he did,
but and that that made me money. He never gets
back because of the injury situation, his history with them
in the past, and he's a guy who he slips
(46:43):
up again off the field. You're talking about an extended,
prolonged absence, right, He's been fourteen games the last two
seasons with suspension and injury. Jason Lockhan forward joining his
CBS NFL Insider Dallas Cowboy's gonna play at the Hall
of Fame game and can'ton Ohio Zeke Elliott to to
this point, the Commissioner's office still going to do some
research in terms of the latest nightclub thing. Um, and
(47:07):
I would guess Jason that even though it appears that
he probably knocked the guy out right, there has been
no denial. The non denial denial is not a denial
from Zeke Elliott. If he does get suspended, it's gonna
be because of the cumulative effect. Best of your knowledge,
do you think he does get set set down by
the league. I think he does. I don't think it'd
(47:29):
be more than a game or two. But I mean, look,
I've said this before, I'll say it again. I can't
often I can't speak to how their personal conduct policy
is applied and how some of these handles are suspended
and suspensions are handled, because it seems like every few
months I've see something I never see them from. Like
I was just in Pittsburgh. That guy got brank at
the practice in the spring mart. He's coming to camp.
(47:52):
They think he's fool clear. They told him he's been reinstated,
and the steers get a phone call and say, yeah,
he can just go to meetings and he can go
to walk suits, but he can't practice, Like well why
and they're like, well, it just is. And then well,
why can't we put them on an exemp list or
an N five list So he's not counting against our
number of players if he can't actually practice, And they're
still waiting to get an explanation on that. So I
(48:13):
don't know how these decisions are made, and I think
no one knows other than adolphel Birch and Roger Goodell
and the very few people who are in on them. Um.
But when they announced it is anyone's guests again, teams
generally beg, plead and and and scream to Joel to
to find out at least two weeks before the season
starts that they can prepare for the opener, but that
(48:33):
that's not always necessarily the case. And if they think
it's open ended and there's another misdeeds they're looking into
that we don't know about it yet. For they just
want to give him more time to potentially hang himself.
You know, that's that's their prerogative as well too. Gee,
how many practice? How many different organizations have you seen
so far? Uh? So far? I've seen the Redskins, Ravens, Steelers, Browns,
(48:54):
and soon as they got to the front with you,
I'll be driving to Indianapolis. Okay, So you've seen the
four teams in the North. Um, four teams in the
a f C North right, Um? Uh, everybody but the bench.
He didn't see the Bengals, which I guess here's always
my question. Was there a team that looked better than
the rest of them? This bring is better than the
rest of them. I mean, there's not another There's not
(49:15):
Antonio Brown or any of those other rosters. There's not
a Ben Robinsburg or any of those other rosters. Uh.
You know, defensively, I think there's still a work in progress.
But offensively even with Bryant not being able to practice.
I mean, Justin Hunter, who has been a former second
round pick, he's been on he's only now on the
sports franchise. He came out of college early, probably too early,
but at six four he's making plays in the red zone.
(49:38):
They still like Eli Rodgers is a slot guys, so
do I? Um, I like what Todd Haley does with
their offense and and uh yeah, I mean they should
be like New England this year, and so much as
they've got a three or four game lead by Thanksgiving,
and it's just a matter of you know, are they
the one seed to two seed? What have you mean?
I I believe the a f C North is real
(50:00):
down other than Pittsburgh, that's the only team I believe
in in that division. And I don't want to say
it's a cake walk because those divisional games are always tough,
but that they should be playing for seating, not for
the division title. Do you think that Roethsburger's talk of
retirement is real. I mean, it's real, and so much
as he likes to That's how he amps himself up.
It's part of his mythology. He likes to be talked about.
(50:22):
He likes the intrigue, he likes the mystery, likes to
ride in on the white horse, whether it's overcoming an injury,
reel or quasi imagined or what have you. That's the
role he likes to play, and that that gets him
fired up. And I think there's a part of this
subconscious that enjoys that. And I think he's I know,
he's got multiple years left on his deal. I know
they're not. They're not acting as if he's going away
(50:44):
anytime soon, and personally, given how close they are and
how close he is to Canton, and how another Super
Bowl would put him obviously completely over the the driving
in all of him or anyway. But if you want
to end all the debate, you know, once you go away,
you don't come back. It's isn't you know. It's It's
not like the NBA and stuff like that, where Michael
Jordan goes back to three years. I don't happen in
(51:05):
the NFL, you leave, it's over. I think he plays
out this contract at the very least, and who knows
after that. UM, Rivers and Gates right now are being
told you can't go to the Hall of Fame induction
ceremony because we have our first practice the new stub
Hub Center. It's in a new town. Anthony Lynn delivering
the bad news to his two stars who played with
with LT. But this this kind of feels like the like,
(51:28):
I'm a Charger fan, but they can't get out of
their own way. Pr wise, Ultimately, do you think they
were lent. It's a tough one for me because they
are trying to make this initial impression and these guys
do have contracts and yeah, it's just one practice, but
