Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, Coming to you, uh today from the
Iron City of Birmingham. I'm gonna at the two Iron
Cities over the next two days. Birmingham Today, it's the
Pittsburgh of the South and Pittsburgh which is the Birmingham
(00:22):
of the North. Oh see what I did there? Anyway,
from the wonderful I Heart Studios high atop uh the
Hills overlooking downtown Birmingham, Doug Gottlieb Show Lot Live to
you and UM, if you watched the last night, it's
kind of cool. I did a game on Facebook. There's
no commercials, there's no like script. You don't do it
like any other game. And uh and John Ramos and
(00:43):
my family watched, so that's a win. Ramos is Ramos
is back, he's healthy, he's got his B twelve shot
in his toss, and he's he's ready to to uh
to mix it up on the ones and twos Ryan
Music alongside this. Uh. He is the quasi producer. I
say quasi because he doesn't book the show. He's only
he's a Hey producer. Of course, this show is booked
(01:03):
exquisitely by Cindy Cats, who, Um, I believe she got
us Cooper Cup today. Correct, Cooper Cup in forty five minutes.
Cooper Cup in forty five minutes, That's what I'm being told. Good,
all right, so Cooper Cup in forty five minutes. We'll
get to um very telling game in the NBA last
night that I've coming in fifteen minutes. But but tonight
(01:24):
is Thursday Night football, and both teams have had a
true week prepare, so we can't go with the normal
narrative of Thursday night it's gonna be bad football because
you've only had like two days. He can't go with that.
By the way, we are keeping an eye on Tiger Woods.
He is three under through thirteen. He does have four birdies,
several par saves, and more than anything, he looked. He
(01:47):
looked good. He looked good, Tiger Woods trying to single
handedly saved golf on television, looking pretty good and doing it.
I'll give you my thoughts on Tiger the likelihood that
he he wins a major ever again, he competes for
a major this year, and what I've always said about
my stock. I'm a stockholder into Tiger Woods that up
coming in the show. So Cooper Cup, Dwayne Casey, Jeff
(02:11):
Schwartz former offensive lineman of course played with Eli Manning
get his thoughts. Also, I heard Bucky Brooks on Colin
Cowhert saying exactly what I said, which is, I don't know.
We're freaking out of bed, Eli Manning. The Giants want
to have one of the top couple of picks that
they can potentially draft a quarterback. And if they decide
they don't want to draft a quarterback, they still want
to have as high a pick as possible. But enough
(02:35):
about me being right. Let's get to tonight's football game.
Kirk Cousins was drafted where in the draft? Ryan Music?
Do you remember what round? I'm gonna go? Fourth round? Uh?
Dak Prescott was drafted in what round? John Ramo's third
m HM music you want to help out? I believe
(02:57):
it was the fourth as well. Yes, I think fourth
is fourth is correct as well. Um. The point is
not to point out that that that Ramos has been
out sick, he's been under the weather. A normal man
would have been in uh Cedar Sinai hospital with doctors
and nurses. Ramos Ramos still had the ability to watch
(03:18):
a ton of TV. By the way, Ramos, when you're
home sick yesterday, did you do the kid thing? When
you're home sick? Did you watch game shows? Let's make
a deal, and what's the one that follows that one?
The price is right? Did you honestly? Is how what
you did? I did? I did watch? Uh is? Honestly?
(03:40):
Did you watch game show? I? Did I watch those two? Yes?
I did? And then what else did you did your debt? Flix?
Amazon Prime? Which tea? I don't have it on Prime?
Did some Netflix? And just basically ate a lot of soup?
Or can we drank soup? Well, what kind of soup?
Did it? Was? Chunky soup? If you ate a lot
of soup? Um? Alright, So somebody needs that we need
(04:00):
to give We need to give Ramo somebody's Amazon Prime code, right,
I mean, not that, not that anybody. That would be nice.
I appreciate that. I And if you didn't have Netflix,
I would gladly give you my I do have Amazon
Prime code. Here's the problem. I would give you mine.
I actually don't know it. My wife, Yeah, and you
know why I don't know it because I've my wife
has put it into our televisions and in mark my
(04:20):
computer because she knows that I will. I don't like
I understand that in the media, I make money off
of people subscribing to things, with the exception of our podcast,
which is in fact free. You should download that. That
is a shameless plug. But it's been really good the
past a couple of weeks. Um Uh, But I would
gladly give out my code to anybody. I doesn't. I
(04:42):
have this problem with Netflix all the time. We're like, hey,
too many devices and like too many devices? Oh yeah,
all my friends that have given out my Netflix code
to So she actually got wise, not because she's a
Debbie downer, but she knows that if I get codes,
if I give codes to people, that I also get
codes from people, and so she has stopped my ability
to give codes to people. Otherwise I would give you
my Amazon Prime code. Um alright, that aside, I just
(05:03):
want to point out how spoiled kids are now. When
I was a kid, right, we would have to stay
home and maybe play video games, and if not, we
would have to watch the price is right, let's make
a deal, uh, Family feud and occasionally some shop operas
in the afternoon. Now these kids, these days, they have
(05:25):
their devices, their phones. Hell, they can get on that
internet thing of a jig and can be anywhere and
watch anything including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. All right,
enough about that, let's get back to the game tonight. Um,
it's it's. It is always interesting to watch quarterbacks who
(05:45):
essentially came in with some of the same billing in
the same round and how they're evaluated. But the fact
is that people are now finding fault with Dak Prescott. Right,
he's only in his second year, but there was a
reason that he was taken in the four round. Um,
And I think you know, the same obviously can be
said with Kirk Cousins that as well as he played,
(06:07):
there have been times in which he's shown his ceiling.
The difference to me is um obviously in the experience
and in the money that's being made that Kirk Cousins,
you can find fault with it, and you can say
should he or should he not be given a long
(06:28):
term deal. But kirk Cousins obviously has had a four
thousand yards season and is on track to have yet
another four thousand yards season. On the other hand, he's
being paid commensurate with that level of of of production
as opposed to Dak, who they can't They simply can't
pay him any more money. But the deal with Doak
(06:49):
is that the plan with Dak seemed to be, Hey,
look we're fine at quarterback. We need to fix our
defense in the off season. And that's the only adjustments
that Dallas made. They expected improvement from Dak into year two.
They expected to have Ezeki Elliott, a solid running game,
the same wide receivers who may be not able to
(07:10):
win on their own, but with the help of another
guy in the box to stop the running game, or
even the running threat of Dak Prescott, the running game
of Zeke Elliott, it would give them a chance to
be as good or better. And so what they did
was they spent most of the offseason trying to fix
the defense, and the defense is a little bit better.
The problem is the defense lost Shawn Lee. The problem
(07:32):
is the offense lost its best player, and so some
of it just kind of works out. And if anything
as planned like this is not actually all that surprising.
It may be surprising to you that Doc isn't more
productive that deck isn't better, but I don't think it's
it's all that surprising, like things were going really, really well,
(07:52):
But it was because the offense was always on time,
It was always third manageable. He had a running game
that people had to respect and if they and run it,
uh Zeke Kelly could also catch down. The backfield was
really good, and past protection, you lose all three phases
of running back. And this is what's going to happen.
On the other side, you have Kirk Cousins, who's been
(08:12):
good but not great. And I heard Bucky Brooks talking
about the possibility he could still end up in San
Francisco because there still is that relationship with Kyle Shanahan.
And now we're gonna see Jimmy Garoppolo this weekend and
over the next couple of weekends, and they'll get a chance.
Do we want him long term or do we want
to make a trade so that we can get Kirk Cousins. Tonight,
(08:33):
it's a fascinating night in the NFL. You've got the
Skins who sit at five and six. They got two
straight difficult road games Cowboys, and then the Bolts in
l A. They get a little extra time to prepare
for for the Chargers Cardinals at home, Broncos at home,
to the on the road, to the Giants. You cannot
get after these two road games. You cannot get an
easier finishing three game kick, right, I mean the Cardinals.
(08:58):
Cardinals are still compete, but three weeks from now their
playoff hopes will probably be extinct. The Broncos have absolutely
no offense, and there's a ton of infighting and issues,
and the Giants are complete and total dumpster fire. Like
if you're the Redskins and you can simply win this week,
you can't guarantee that you'll be at nine wins, but
you feel really good about playing with house money when
(09:19):
you come out to l A next week, as opposed
to the to the to the Cowboys, the Cowboys finishing
stretches like this, Redskins at home, Giants on the road,
winnable game to the Raiders Bears to be a winnable game.
They have their own issues. Seahawks at home difficult, but
remember the Seahawks don't have Chancellor. Uh, they don't have
um what's his name? They're they're there, Richard Sherman, right,
(09:45):
And then they faced the Eagles on the road, like
both of these teams actually have. And you say Eagles,
and everybody thinks I'm saying Eagles are going to destroy them.
That's the Eagles. Week seventeen of the season. That's when
you rest guys for the playoffs, even though they have
three remaining road games, two of them against non playoff teams,
and you'll be playing the Philadelphia Eagle backups in Week seventeen.
(10:06):
Like this has become a really important game, a really
telling game for both quarterbacks. Cousins should be ahead of
Dak Prescott, but Dak is at home and Dax had
extra time to prepare for a normal Thursday night game
like tonight's game Thursday. This is an interesting game, so
I'm in on it now. I think Cousins is demonstrably better.
(10:30):
Demonster monster. What's the word music, what's the word demonstra
Demonstratively better? Is that demonstratively better? Demonstrability? We can go
ahead and say that that's it. Demonstratively demonstratively that's what
I was missing. Another t demonstratively better. But that's also
because of the time spent in the NFL. Like Cousins
(10:53):
lacks like the pure armed talent. He's not a great athlete.
He doesn't have a great arm, he doesn't have great size.
He does have a good brain, okay, but sometimes the
ball doesn't come out, doesn't come out as hot as
it would against the elite talents like that. That's there's
a reason he was a fourth round guy. And the
(11:13):
same as true with Dakdak's got a big body. He's
got good legs, but not a freak athletically, though he
has good arm strength, not crazy accurate, and though he's bright,
it's not like he's a It's not like he's a
professor up there with only a year and a half.
These guys are are flawed and good enough to win with,
(11:35):
but not good enough to carry you. That's what you
have in both of these quarterbacks and cousins is just
more refined, more developed, and more comfortable within this system.
There's a football is interesting. Be sure to catch live

Cooper Cup joins us. He of course, uh, he joined
us earlier in the NFL season. By the way, love
(18:12):

the Salvation Army fight for those in need all of
our community this Christmas by going to Fox sports Trader
dot com click down the red kettle icon to donate
called one A three three sal Join. That's one three
three sal join. Uh, Coop, you have this weekend is
the my Cause, My Cleats weekend. You're doing something with
(18:34):
four square missions international, right, Yeah, that's right. Um, just
some uh a friend of mine on the football team
back in Eastern Washington. His parents are currently over Incomebolitia.
They actually moved the whole life over there, you know,
sold the house and I kind of living there full time.
And um, you're helping kind of serve the people over
(18:55):
there and kind of raising up the kids and um,
you know, to be leaders in the future. All right,
So what do your cleats look like? Have you seen
them yet? I've seen the design. I haven't seen them
in person yet. Um, but they're gonna have the Cambodian
colors on them. Um for some uh, you know, Cambodian
riding on it. That loo was really good. I'll till
(19:15):
I get a picture for the game. Do you know
what it says in Cambodian or you're just gonna take
somebody's word for it. No, I know what, I know
what it says that. I mean, I'll say you guys
when it comes out. Um, Cooper Cup joining us on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. Obviously, you had eight catches hundred
sixteen yards, great win at the Coliseum against the Saints,
but I think it was especially important to you coming off.
(19:37):
You know, you had the big fumble at the goal
line and then you had a big drop against the
Vikings and the fumble. Really game game was it was
I think seven seven or fourteen seven at the time
against against the Vikings. This is second time which you
had to bounce back from usually sure handed dropped something
around the end zone Seahawks game as well. What what
helped you? How? How do you how do you you know,
drag over to your trash and delete what happened in
(20:01):
Minnesota would happened against Seattle and play so well against Dorlan's.
I think the important thing is just being able to
learn from it, um, first of all, and uh, you know,
I think there's something to be said about not just
you know, dismissing what happened. I mean that I obviously
some mistakes and um plays that I want to be making.
And um, so I mean you have to learn from
(20:21):
those mistakes and carry those forwards. But at the same time,
you have to not let it hinder you, so you
can't uh and you know, prepare and uh be ready
for that next week, you know. And then I feel
like you've got seven days to prepare for this next
team coming in. If you're carrying over stuff in the
week before, you know, things are gonna go well for you,
Um you know, it's an imperfect game local and I
(20:42):
don't think there's anyone in the league right now that
you can say they've never made a mistake as all
the years they played football, So, um, you know, it's
the smallst thing. You know, it's a learning experience day
and day out, whether it's making plays that win games,
are making ones that um you know are are affecting
your team negatively. UM you know you have to learn
from them. You have to move on. I heard that
when you had to drop against Seattle that to a man,
(21:05):
almost everybody in the offense came over and said something
to you after the game at your locker. Is that accurate? Yeah?
I know, And and that's the testament to the guys
we have to, um, you know, an incredible group of
guys of great football players that um, you're just worthing
able to encourage me. And when you have that in
locker room as well, I mean that definitely helps. How
(21:26):
how much different is it now going from the Hunter
start of the year, Not a ton of expectations for Jared,
not a ton of a a lot of curiosity more
than anything, to now everyone knows that you're a ten ten,
catch a game guy. Everybody knows you guys have a
high powered offense. You're you know, you're eight and three,
you're in first place in your division. How much different
actually is it now that people now only have a
(21:47):
book on you. But the book says that you're really
good and you're the hunt, did not the hunter. Well,
you know, for us in the locker room, and nothing's changed.
You know, we try to, um, we try to listen
to any of the noise, whether that's get good or
and uh, you know, our mentality in the locker room
was has never changed, and um, they won't change. Um.
You know, we're gonna attack the week, week in, week out,
(22:09):
prepared to get better and better each and every day.
And um, you know, regardless of what people are saying
or what other people's expectations are, doesn't change our our
expectations are for ourselves. Yeah, and look your schedules backload.
You got to go to Arizona that's still in this fight.
Gotta go to Seattle, I gotta go to Tennessee. All
and you have the Eagles at home. All four playoffs
caliber teams in a row. Cooper cups our guest here
(22:30):
on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um. Yeah, look,
it's it's been fascinating to watch you guys kind of
kind of evolved now that you've seen most of the league. Like,
is it reasonable to think that, uh, that competing for
a Super Bowl is not out of the question at all? Well, No,
I wouldn't say that. I don't think, Uh, I mean
I don't. I don't think even goes into the season
(22:52):
without you know, expecting to win games and with our
expecting and having that oltmate going on. But just like
anything you have that some go in mind, but there's
always a lot of steps along the way that you've
got focused on. And um, it's that day to day
mindset that the daily improvement, daily excellence that's gonna get
you there. And um, you know, so our expectation is
to be able to perform at the highest level, to
play at the highest level, but there's lots of steps
(23:15):
along the way that we have to get through first.
Like you said, you know, there's some very good teams
coming up, and you know we've got the Arizona this
weekend and that's where our purposes right now. Alright, really quickly,
my son is a burgeoning wide receiver. He's eight years old.
He wants a skateboard. Should I let a kid who
wants to be a wide receiver get a skateboard? Hey,
I skateboard. I was My dad wasn't big fan either,
(23:35):
but uh, you know something, you know, as a kid,
I love to go there and skateboard and do all
the different things that you know kids do. So um,
you know it didn't it didn't you hurt me, so
obviously go for it. All right, He'll he'll go skate
or die. He'll go, he'll shred it up and he'll
he'll be the next Cooper Cup. Coop, thanks much for
joining us. This is a great cause. We look forward
to seeing the Cambodian style cleets and best of luck
(23:56):
this weekend against the Cardinals. Thank you very much. I
appreciate all right. That's Cooper Cup joining us on the
Doug Gotlip Show. He sure to catch live editions of
The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at three p m.
Eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio app. Tiger would e t W two some
Tiger to others or that guy who used to be
(24:18):
the greatest golfer in the world and is now the
punch line for so many jokes, right uh, like he
was of of all these guys who I mean, like
I tweeted this yesterday, can you believe that? Um? Like
if you would have gone on a prop bet and
you would have said, Brian Miller, Brian Williams, um on
(24:43):
a prop bet with um, some of these other guys
let's just say hmm, with ch Charlie Rose, Matt Lower
and Brian william who lasts the longest on network TV.
And I know that Williams is now on nb MSNBC
(25:05):
or whatever. Like you go back a month ago and
no one in the world bets on Brian Williams. No
one in the world bets on Brian Williams. But now, okay,
but before before Hollywood and before broadcast news and before
(25:27):
Russell Simmons all got their come up, and due to
things that they did too and did with women, there
was Tiger Woods. And I've told people before like, look,
I'm not okaying Tiger's behavior. Tiger was never married to me,
he was never alleged to do anything illegal. What he
was alleged to have done was in fact immoral. But
(25:51):
Tiger also is a is a little bit of a
victim of of timing. You know, if you if you
went into back when you know Jordan's and some of
his cohorts, when when he came up and Tiger Woods
came up, Like some of that behavior could be par
for the course for the elite level superstars like Magic
(26:14):
Johnson contracted HIV. His wife Cookie does not have HIV.
Do I need to explain any further? So, so this
idea that like he's the worst, and well, he was
a guy who got caught I would guess, well obviously
stepping out of his marriage, but also in that foregone
(26:36):
era of where where we in the media turned turned
a blind eye. Uh. You compile that with the devastating
injuries to his knee, his achilles, and of course most
recently his back, and Tiger, Uh, Tiger has been more
of a punchline. Now. It should be noted that four
years ago, two thousand thirteen, he didn't win a major,
(26:58):
but he did win more tournaments than any buddy on earth.
He was he was too, a player of the year.
Take a listen to uh this call earlier today on
the Golf Channel apps. The most highly anticipated December round
of golf for the first time in three hundred one days,
Tiger Woods is playing competitively for the world to witness.
(27:20):
Takes this one up the left side. It's gonna test
that bunker. The second bunker up the left, it's gonna
need a good bounce. He gets good bunt, got the bounce,
and just does find the fairway. Now, I have a
couple of beliefs here. I believe you can't be too
drunk to fish. And I believe that you are never
too old to play golf. Um and and if you know, Arnold,
(27:47):
if Jack Nicholas can win a major in his forties,
then why can't Tiger Woods. And if you want to
tell me that all right, he'll wear down, he will.
He doesn't have to win a bunch of the majors.
But with his body and his mind completely in tatters.
Uh and and the shrapnell still not pulled out from
(28:08):
from him personally, He's still been able to compete when
healthy at the Master's. Matter of fact, his first Masters
after the crash, he finished fourth fourth of the Masters.
He could play that course blindfolded and still finished in
the top fifteen. So maybe it's that I've been a
(28:29):
I've I'm I'm still holding onto my Tiger stock right.
America loves a good comeback story. Alex Rodriguez, you know,
suspended twice. First after his first big suspension coming to
the Yankees, and uh he still won the World Series
m v P. And then after his second suspension and
(28:50):
he was jettison from the team, they asked him to
retire early, going back a year and a half ago.
Like Alex Rodriguez right now is in discussion to be
the Yank He's manager. He is one of he is
one of the most well regarded TV analysts in his sport.
Like there is second life and third life for all
(29:12):
kinds of guys. If you have talent and if you
have your health, it's a huge day for the entire
sport of golf. Like there was no Nike Golf before Tiger.
And if you want to track Nike Golf and the
Nike clubs, which now you cannot find, they do not
sell anywhere, it tracks directly in line with when Tiger
(29:37):
was playing. When Tiger was not playing, it doesn't matter
the clubs weren't any good, people still bought them. Why
because the Tiger Woods. I mean, like, look, if you
like watching golf on TV. If you enjoy watching good
round of golf, you should root for Tiger, even if
you hate Tiger. And if you like Tiger well, then
you should be pleasantly surprised with how well he's playing
(29:58):
and how healthy he looks. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within
the I Heart Radio app. Here's Luke Walton on on
how he thought the Lakers played last night. We set
a challenge to our players tonight, and I thought they
did a great job of responding to that. A couple
of little mistakes here and there cost us when we
(30:22):
had a lead down the stretch, but overall, really happy
with the way that they came out in battle tonight.
I think that's that's a fair assessment. I mean, they
lost Steph Curia a couple of times, uh in overtime especially,
it did such a good job on him and UH
and really kind of figured out how they wanted to
attack the Golden State Warriors defense. I do think it's
(30:44):
fair to wonder if the Warriors are as good as
they have been. Look, it's it's really hard this time
of year but I think it's fair to wonder about
that bench, which has been once again reconfigured. There's a
ton of youth on that bench and there's some age
like it Adala is not. We we think of Iguadala
as the star of of the finals like he was
(31:07):
three years ago. But three years ago, if you remember,
not only was he younger, but they were leaving him
open like he was the fifth option on the floor. Um,
you know, Jordan's Bell's Jordan Bell is just a kid.
Andre Goodala is thirty three years old, kind of an
old thirty three. They still have Sean Livingston. Those are
(31:30):
two old heads. But the rest of the group and
they have Nick Young who's just kind of uh, he
comes in and he's there, you know, come in and
try and get buckets. Guy got Pat McCaw, Pat McCaw,
Cavon Looney and Jordan Bell is there young guys. So
how that bench develops, I think it's really really interesting.
(31:51):
They might still be a guy short Amri Caspy when
he plays, can provide them three point shooting. JaVale McGee
whose production has been missed. Like they got a lot
of something, not surely know exactly what they have, but
it's still the same mix of we go with our
big three and Draymond and then occasionally go big or
sometimes go really really small. H and then interesting about
(32:14):
about the Raptors, it's like you look and they're they're
still very efficient offensively. They were good last year offensively.
The difference this year is they're shooting seven more threes
a game. Seven that's a lot. Seven more threes a game,
(32:35):
and that is honestly par for the course in terms
of um the NBA this year. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at
three pm Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. As we get closer to Christmas,
we'll talk about great holiday movies. Die Hard is a
holiday movie. So is die Hard. To Hall Alone's in
(32:58):
the conversation and I'm the rare uh rare kid brought
up Jewish? Who I actually? You can? You know? I
never understand people like you say, like Mary Christmas, like
you no, no, I'm Jewish? Like it's okay, Mary Christmas
is just a nice greeting. With that, we welcome in,
Jeff Schwartz, Uh Mary Christmas. Jeff thank you. I've never
been offended by that either. It doesn't you don't want
(33:20):
to do say though I often say Happy Christmas. I'm
so he's just saying Happy Hanuka and it throws people off. Yeah,
it's kind of a British thing. You kind of sound
like a stop right. I almost feel like your teeth
should be askew and should have really bad breath. Jeff Schwartz,
course played nine years in the NFL's and offensive lineman. Uh.
He and his brother have a written a book about
food and family. It's outstanding. Followhim on Twitter at Jeff Schwartz.
(33:40):
That's Jeff with a G. He's g off. He's not
really a Jeff, he's a geoff on a Jeffrey. Um.
I'll read his work on sp Nation. He joins us.
All right. So most of the media world was offended
for Eli Manning when he was offered the possibility of starting,
but being pulled at some point when it became a
mood point to come out of the game and throw
some of the other guys in as a as a
(34:03):
guy who played alongside him and knows and you know
this league, so well, what was your reaction? So I
wasn't offended so much that he got benched. Um. I
was more just upset the way it was handled. I
felt like a guy who deserves the respect of the
organization for his time obviously spent one of two Super Bowls,
two games in a row. It just felt very casual.
(34:24):
It felt like they were just benching somewhat of of
my caliber. Car Honestly, you know when I got released
and they sound a press release, they set out press
release for this. I think this occasion should have been
more formal, Um. I think there should have been a
press conference. I don't think you should have sent Eli
out there to talk um in front of the media
like it was any other day. I just think it
wasn't handled um with the professionalism that was that was
(34:47):
afforded to Eli for what he's done for the organization.
And I think that's where a lot of people were
upset about it, and those a lot of people were
also upset about Geno Smith playing. I'm actually not because
Davis Webb, who they want to play eventually, is nowhere
year ready to play the football game. He was for
string All training camp. She didn't get didn't get any
(35:07):
Can you smack those can you smack those kids, Like,
how dare they talk when you're on a national radio show.
Keep them in line, Swarts. I just got to Los Angeles,
so my my son's in the car with me, um,
and so I just think that that that's not an
issue for me. The issue is more just a lack
of what I feel respect towards Eli doing this in
this in this manner. I listen, I understand, but like
(35:30):
as you plant out, most guys in the NFL, when
they get older and they get pulled, they don't get benched,
they get released. He's getting benched, which, if anything, will
help him be healthy for next year. Right, And like, look,
part of this is I think they want to lose.
Part of this is, you know they gotta play Gino.
Not just because David's web is not ready, but you
got a reward of veteran guy who started. Give him
(35:50):
a shot, you know, give him a look so that
he can get a job next year. Like I kind
of think all this stuff makes sense. It's just our
emotions being tied to Eli. Many people have been rough
on Eli, even when he's been successful, and I think
those are the people like, well, I said he sucked,
but I didn't mean he sucked so bad you want
to start Geno Smith, right. I think that's I think
that's really what a lot of the reaction is, right,
(36:11):
And I actually think they should deactivate him. I don't
think he should dress like I don't. I think they're
kind of doing this both ways. And I think ELI
did call them a little bit on their bluff because
I don't think they expected to go down like like
you did when you heard John Marr, the Giant turner,
talk about what we didn't really expect to go down
with this. They expected Eli to just accept starting the
game and then be being pulled no matter what it happened.
(36:32):
You know what, if on Sunday he throws three touchdowns
in the first half against Oakland, he shouldn't be poled
for that. Um So, I think they expected Eli and say, Okay,
I'll just kind of go along with the plan, and
when he didn't, the Giants didn't really know how to respond.
I mean, I just think it's kind of degrading for
Eli to be taking scout team reps in whatever you know,
fift Keith Year starting all those games. He should be deactivated.
(36:54):
They should put Davis Webb at second of string and essentially,
you know, you keep him around to be a leader
like he is. He was, you know, sitting in the
meeting room yesterday with maybe the breakfast room with Davis
Webbing six thirty in the morning, you know, talking to
the young kid and helping him out. But I think
you shouldn't even dress him. You can't have it both ways.
You can't have him be there if you know doesn't
play well, if you know gets hurt. Oh, here comes
to the ULI to save the day. You've moved off
(37:16):
from him. You need to use to deactivate him for
the rest of the season. Jech Howarts joining us on
the Doug Gotlip Show here on on Fox Sports Tradio.
How much does Eli actually have in the tank? So
this is a this is a good question, and to
be honest, I don't know because everything around him is
not what it's supposed to be. I think Eli has
a point of his carese thirty seven now where he
(37:37):
needs a lot of things to be good. He needs
to be great protection, he needs to have skill weapons.
He's not going to leave the poking and make plays
with his legs. So it's it's very hard to judge
what he is he's had. I think I saw the
stat has had like less than ten percent of snaps
this year with everyone healthy on you know, his on
on the edge of skill weapons. He doesn't trust an
offensive line. If you watch him play, he's generating back there,
(38:00):
that was the ball quickly sometimes when there's kind of
feel a little bit of pressure. I think next year,
if the Giants were to release him or trade him,
I think he would do well in Arizona, Jacksonville. I
don't I don't like Denver, and people have thrown that
out there. Um, but you know in Jacksonville where he
knows off c coughlin and they'll they'll be a heavy
plashing team. In Arizona with Bruce Arians, he'll get back
to what he's done best is for, which is a
(38:22):
lot of plash. And that's what Kevin and Kevin Gilbride
was before him. Run the ball, run the ball, and
let Eli chuck the ball around the field. So I
think he would do well in both of those systems
if he gets opportunities for that. That's the voice of
Jeff Schwartz, wh's joining us on the Doug Golip Show. Right,
Let's get to night's game. Cowboys taking on the Redskins. UM.
I'm not gonna say I never bought into the Dack thing,
(38:42):
but I did think that he was wildly overregarded because
he was a fourth round pick. There was also always
some vitriol towards Tony Romo Um because of turnovers and
because of of injuries. So replacing Romo helped him. Behind
a great offensive line with a great running game helped him.
And he was a rookie playing against the soft schedule,
playing with a dynamic team where he didn't face a
(39:04):
ton of adversity. And I feel like he's been a
little bit exposed. Is that a fair perspective on on
deck considering doesn't have Zeke and he's had a little
bit of change in offensive line. How was totally um
on the Romo training last year? It's still about weeks sixteen,
and even that he had that little spot series in
Week seven team he came in and four plays and
(39:24):
drove down score touchdown against Philly. UM. I think Galaxa
was thirteen and three last year with Romo. UM. I
obviously think he dad did some great things and and
like you said, he got put a situation seeming about
this it's just really right. He has three all Pro
offensive linement, not just like Pro bowlers, the best at
their position, and Zach Martin, the right guard, center, Travis Frederick,
and and he has a All Pro running back. He
(39:48):
then have the Pro Bowl wide receiver and a Hall
of Fame tight end. That's who he was dressed into
playing with um And so I think that he was
a little overvalue last year. I think we're seeing right
now that some of those parts of aren't there, and
he's struggling, and I hope he can, you know, overcome
it and do better essentially, but it hasn't looked good.
What twenty three points and three games now without Zeke
(40:08):
Elliott and then another it's not really a short week
because they played last Thursday. But you know another you know,
the Restkins, our division opponent, don't play him tough tonight.
What about what about the Redskins? You know they have
been reticent to uh, to give Cousins a long term deal. Uh.
There have been times in which Cousins looks like, really
he was good in Seattle. There's been spots to which
(40:30):
he's had to win games, and he has, but there
are times would you're like Oh yeah, Kirk Cousins. I said, like, hey,
here's what I equated to. I equated Kirk Cousins to settling,
you know to But sometimes settling is the smart thing.
It's we talked about this five minutes ago before you
joined us. It's like, look, would you like your wife
to wear heels every time you go out shore? But
sometimes the smart thing is to wear flats so their
(40:52):
feet don't hurt the end of the night. Sometimes the
smart thing is just keep the quarterback you have so
you don't have to search for the quarterback that you want.
Am I crazy to think that they be settling with Cousins?
But settling is not always a bad thing. Well, my
wife would would never be caught dead without heels on
outside the house, so she might have a different answer
than I would. I think they have to sign him. Um,
(41:12):
you know, this year is interesting. They're like the best
of the bad football teams. I mean, they're kind of
just right there, almost beat the almost beat the Saints
go to Seattle, like you said, and win that game
with down four offensive linemen. Um, I don't think they
have a choice. What are they gonna do. They're not
in a draft, in a position in the draft to
take one of these top quarterbacks. So maybe they you know,
they take someone like a like a Josh Allen from
(41:32):
Wyoming later in the first round. But you're kind of
starting over if you don't if you don't sign Cousins.
And like you said, he's gonna have his bad days,
gonna have his good days. But he's playing decently this
year with no weapons. I mean they they got rid
of Deshan Jackson, Pierre go Son. The offensive line has
been messed up this year at times. Um, I think
he deserves a contract and if washing the sides not
(41:53):
to pay them, um, they're gonna be starting over. I
don't think they want to start over. Are the are
the steel there's good or are they just slightly better
than the teams they play? Like helped me out. They
have Antonio Brown, they have Levian Bell, they have Ben Roethlisberger,
they got Ryan Chase here, they got some pieces that
I and they have a record of a team that
looks like a dominant team. But I've watched him and
(42:16):
they fool around with these teams that should be and
they have guys running wide open. They're confused. Their defensive secondary,
like explained to me the Pittsburgh's the enigma that is
the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're just not very crisp. But they've
not been efficient this year. And I don't know if
it's because Levy on Bell wasn't there a training camp
and and I do think part of the offensive problems
(42:36):
I wrote about this a couple weeks show. You know,
Big Ben has talked about retirement almost too much for
a superstar, um, especially a quarterback. So you know, is
he I think he's totally there every Sunday, but you
know it's just preparing is he? Is he mentally all
the way there? At times? I mean, they know they
dealt with that. The offensive want is still playing good.
Their defense has actually been pretty good. Um, you know
(42:58):
they have those couple of bold coverages. So you wonder
why that is. Is that a lack of concentration? Does
that start with the head coach to start with with?
With with the GM moving down? I don't know. I
don't know. I mean, they're good enough to beat New England,
but would you trust them to beat New England? I won't.
I think that New England? When's that? ANFC Championship game?
By fourteen points. Yeah, I tend to. I tend to
(43:19):
agree with you. And then the question is do we
do we buy into the Eagles, who are blowing everybody out,
have a chance to first time since it was the
greatest show on turf beat five teams in a row
by twenty or more points that they've been thoroughly dominant.
They don't. They don't play anybody like they had that
last place schedule like the Cowboys did last year. And
I love the Eagles are doing. They're they're running the ball,
(43:40):
they're playing great defense ball. Like you said, like, is
it it's a big turnaround in one season, I'm with you,
it's it's a little bit too much for me to
believe that. It's. That's why I think Aaron Rodgers comes
back in plays. I think he sees it and he's like,
you know, but the Rams not totally bought in on
golf in a big spot right to much you soon
(44:01):
Saints like defense looks better and unless they're playing at home,
I'm not big buyro into that. I'm not sure who's
coming out of the NFC. And then outside of New England,
there's no one in the a f C outside of
maybe the chargers. I think that that have the talent
to compete. Uh. You can again follow him on Twitter. Uh,
that's that's a good way to start. Or you can
(44:21):
read his book, giving his brother's book. He's have sworts
at g E O F F. Schwartz or we just
work at its sports Nation. What are you doing in
a supports station? Uh? Sp nation? Um? What do you
do in l a oh so? I am um giving
me a f on network on Sunday and actually going
tomorrow to do some stuff as Fox so Um just uh,
(44:43):
I brought my son too, So we're from l A
so So doing a bunch of media things like usual.
All right, welcome to a Saturday. You want to come
and hang and and to have your boys swim in
the pool. Uh. And we can have a block from
my son at some point we can. We can do
that in the meantime, Schwartz and thanks join us all right,
we'll do it.
