Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Dug got Lee Show
on Fox Sports Radio. What upp It's Dog Got Leave Show?
Fox Sports Radio. Stop it already with the little kids
in the all whine at the masters. Stop it already.
They're all cute. It's like the puppy Bull with golf clubs.

(00:20):
I can't take it anymore. One kid cu to the
the next kid, you to the next kid, and none
of them are crying and throwing fits. It's so unrealistic, right,
They're all out there swinging a golf club better than
you and me. No one's picking their noses. There are
no dumps in their pants, just cute little young uns

(00:41):
or lills. You know, lills is the new expression, right,
lills run around on America's uh most known golf course, Augusta, Nashville.
Welcome in this to Doug Gotlip Show. No, we will
not be talking about the puppy bull with golf clubs. Instead,
we'll be talking about actual sports being played as we
lead you up to the lead you up to the

(01:03):
tradition unlike any other tomorrow from a gustache, I'm I'm
fired up. Sorry, I don't usually get get all that
into golf if I told you guys. Ever, I remember
told you guys the how there's a correlation between adult
films and golf before. I've told you that before, right,

(01:24):
that like guys watching adult films and guys watching golf
kind of one in the same. Like my wife when
she walks into the room and I'm like, what are
you doing? Like watching golf? What are you now? Remember
you can always pick up a tip from a pro mm.
I never thought of that. I never thought of that. Club.

(01:48):
You're never going to be good as what you see
on TV. You're just adult films golf. You're not going
to be that good. Like, Wow, he's amazing at golf,
at golf amazing. You can always pick up a tip
from pro. You're never going to be as good. And
and maybe here's the clincher, I will tell you watching
golf on TV makes you want to play golf watching

(02:11):
an adult film. You got that right, So golf on
TV and adult films on TV, you've got one one
and the same. Speaking of porn um, the RAMS are
doing the trading porn, fantasy football porn. That's that's what
they're doing. That's what they're doing. And you signed with

(02:33):
the RAMS and you signed with the Rams, and everybody
signs with trades to the Rams, A key to leave.
Marcus Peterson, Dominquan sue, yes, I know not all we're
signed somewhere traded to but whatever. And then yesterday Brandon Cooks,
Brandon Cooks becomes the newest to join the Rams. Will

(02:54):
play for you, um, something Colin Cowherd said earlier today
on The Herd. And it does mean, I mean you
would it would you would think it means that they
are out of the Odell Beckham Junior Sweepstakes. Now I've
heard people say, well, listen, if they lose these guys

(03:14):
to free agency, it doesn't matter because they'll they'll get
compensatory picks. But the truth is that you only get
compensa story picks. The compensatory picks are based upon how
many free agents you lose and how many free as
you sign. There's a whole ratio and math to the
entire thing. It is not a locked up. Since it's
very you're you're a simpleton. If you say, well, Brandon

(03:36):
Cooks leaves, you get compensatory picks. Now, that's not the
way it works. You sign undrafted free agents, that counts
against you. In terms of signing free agents, and the
likelihood is you don't get compensed. Story picks the rams.
Lack of a plan appears to be their plan. And
and look, some people go to the grocery store and
shop this way. They just go and they just oh,

(04:00):
and you're like, oh that looks good. Oh that looks good.
Oh that looks good. It's also the idea of new money. Right,
new money does this all the time, new way. You
got money in your pocket? Why you don't go shopping
on a on a Friday at North Stroom's. You just
got paid. Just gape heat Friday night, right, Like, you

(04:25):
don't go shopping then, because now all a sudden, Man,
I didn't get direct to positive, I cashed my check,
I got money in my pocket. I'll walk in. I'm like,
oh that looks good. That looks good. You go shopping
without a plan, you just end up with a bunch
of steak. Steak looks good. A right. You walk by
the butcher, caring like, man, that looks good. Then you
walk by the fish, caring like, oh, what's fresh? Like

(04:46):
sort of the salmon is a fresh caught wally, Oh,
oh that looks good. Then you go in like you're
in Whole Foods. You know they have those pizzas and
they're like glistening. They almost like like an advertisement. You
go like, oh, that looks good. You come home with
all this fresh produce, all these fresh meats and fresh fish,

(05:08):
and guess what, Like, all right, you gotta cook the
fish that night because you don't cook the fish that
night and ain't good the second day. But you just
got the pizza, which has already been cooked. And then
the steak. You really want to cook that right away.
You don't want to let it sit. You got just
too much stuff going on. Well, I'll put the steak
in the freezer. Well that never never comes out nearly,

(05:28):
is good? Right, Well I'll make the salmon. But it
really felt like the pizza. We'll do. Salmon and pizza
doesn't really go together. It's like women's basketball, love them
both together. So I look at the rams and Brendon

(05:49):
Cooks is not a number one wide receiver. If he was,
do you know where he'd be? New England or better? Yet?
New Orleans? Was New Orleans offense better or worse? After
he left? That would be better? And yes, they missed
him in New England. After he got injured in the
Super Bowl but still had a shot to win it.
And maybe they didn't have a a guy who could

(06:12):
stretch the field. But he wasn't a number one. He's
a pretty good number two, but he wants to be
paid like a number one. And I get what the
Rams are doing, which is like, hey, these guys are
all on prove it deals, contract guys whose contracts are
gonna run out. It's a great idea, fantastic idea, um,

(06:40):
but the idea that the thought that players playing on
their last year their contract is going to get them
to all play hard. Aaron Donald last year of his deal,
and dominckin Sue last year of his deal, Todd Gurley,
Marcus Peters, Brandon Cooks, the Marcus Joiner, Roger staffeld Um,
Rob Havenstein, Jamon Brown, Ethan Westbrooks, Cavon Webster, Dominique Easily,

(07:06):
Matt Longacre, all in their last year of the deals,
all with the Rams. You've heard of senior ritists, right,
you ever not the senior we've been from high school.
You're like, oh boy, I just I gotta do senior
ditch day. I can't pay attention. My mind is already

(07:27):
off at State. You I'm already thinking about the co
Eds at Michigan, at Alabama or at Kentucky Westland like
your your mind's already gone. And why because that you're
in the last year of your deal. I know we
all operate under this assumption that guys are going to

(07:48):
be on their best behavior, that players are going to
play harder, compete better, and want it more because hey,
it's the NFL, It's not for long. But the truth
is that NFL players are kind of always playing on
last year of their deal sort of contracts. Most of
these guys know they are cutible. And if you're worried

(08:10):
about in Dominican Sue and Dominan Sue did not have
a good year, that the team did not have a
good year, they didn't win, and he still got a
one year contract. Fourteen million dollars could be sixteen million dollars.
There's a reason that it keep to Leaves no longer
le Bronco. There's a reason that Marcus Peters is no
longer a Kancity chief. There's a reason that Brandon Cooks

(08:31):
is on his third team during his rookie deal. And
the reason is is going to play out over time.
Their lack of a plan is their plan, and that's
not a very good plan because at the end of

(08:51):
the day, we all get reset to our default. Al right,
we all get reset to our default. You can break
up with a girl. I mean, it's like that. You know,
there's a story about Tiger Woods. And again, I'm a
Tiger Woods fan, and I don't care about Tiger woods

(09:13):
relationship nonsense, like I don't think it speaks very well
to him or as a as a human being or
a golfer. I don't care that much. But I will
tell you that the idea that there's remember you had
a he had a girlfriend who signed a nondisclosure agreement
and she thinks she can violate or she thinks the

(09:34):
agreement allows her to speak out on some level about
there about their relationship, and the rumor is that he
may cheated on her. Right. That appears to be Tiger's default.
Do you guys remember the movie Greece? But like Greece,

(09:56):
all right, I mean remember via Newton John. She tried
to be the she tried to be the cool chick
at the end, but that's that, but eventually she's actually
it's same thing with John Travolta, right, he tried to
be cool, Danny Zuko whatever, round his round his buddies.

(10:17):
But the truth is that he was a pushover. He
was in love. That's his default, That's who he really is.
And so when Dominican Sue and a keep to leave,
and Marcus Peters and Brandon Cooks and not all these
guys have attitude and ego issues. Some of it is
just personality, some of it is a want and desire
to get paid. But the idea that they'll all get

(10:42):
along perfectly in a locker room of Alpha's when in
the back of their mind they are playing for their
financial future with a quarterback who went from a complete
bus to you know, he's not that bad against the
first place Jewel. There is way too much risk and

(11:06):
it's very hard to find reward. The Rams have made big,
bold moves. They have been the story. They have been
the winners of the free agency and trade offseason in
terms of names, But when has that ever worked in football?
And what exactly is their plan? Their lack of a

(11:28):
plan is their plan? That ain't a plan? All right?
Rob Bryan joins me up coming next He's been He's
been a defense according for twenty years. As conditions on
the field change, so can your insurance needs. With talking
to Farmers Eating today, so you can assess with your
policies game Ready found agent Farmers dot com. I'll ask
the two time Super Bowl champion defense according to Rob Bryan,

(11:48):
if he likes the Rams non plan, Let's just get
dudes that are in the last year of their deal
and throw him on a football field and hope it
works out. Non planed plan works out for them. We'll
ask him next in The Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. When I

(12:10):
think good mood and cheery, I think of the Ryan Brothers,
especially Rob. He joins us in The Doug Gottlieb Show. Um, okay,
help me out with this. Uh what by your estimation,
what are the Rams doing? I'll tell you what. It
looks weird because they're going out and it's like, okay,
let's let's push all our chips in and they've added

(12:31):
all these veterans. But the but the scary thing is
like Look, Brandon Cooks, I was with him in New Orleans.
He's a fantastic person. But you know, you get Marcus
ps At Peters who's so talented, you got Sue, you
got all these guys, and it's just weird because last year,
you know, the there's a young team, they were exciting,

(12:52):
they were doing all these great things. Now they're going
for it. They're going with all these veterans, and you know,
sometimes that can either that can either go great for
you or it can go the wrong way. So it'll
be interesting to see, you know what, a team that
I thought was going to be totally on the rise
with really what they had, adding all these other pieces
and see how it works out. Yeah, I think it's

(13:15):
it's kind of a lack of a plan plan like
oh we'll go that. It's it's I don't know, do
you like do you like grocery store store shopping or
do you do you have your No, I like going
to the fast foods. I know what it looks that way,
but no, no, I know what you're saying, Hey, we're
picking the groceries. Are doing this than interesting plan. But
I mean in terms of groceries, it's like some people

(13:36):
go and they have a meal in mind, all right,
I have to get this because it goes with this,
and I have to get that wine goes with this,
and blah blah blah blah blah. And some people just
go like, oh, that looks good. Oh that looks good.
Looks and that appears to be what Rams are doing.
It really does. I mean, it's it's strange just how
many guys they've been able to get this offseason. I mean,
it's it's it really is strange. And it's like all

(13:59):
these we've got this pro bowler, We've got this pro bowler,
We've got this. I mean, it's it's amazing. It's like
a fantasy football damn. Okay, So what then do the
Patriots do it? It appears to mean they're not going
to trade Rob Gronkowski, right, you can't get rid of
all of the weapons, and there's been no talks via reports.
So they now have essentially two first round picks. What

(14:19):
do you see the Patriots doing now? Well, I think
you know, the Patriots have got you know, two first
two seconds. You know, in some years they actually have that,
you know, when they've traded off to Seymour and guys
like that. They they've stockpiled picks. I think, uh, I
think Gronkowski definitely stays. I think getting Edelman back if

(14:40):
he's healthy. Remember, those are the two best receivers they have,
you know, I know Cooks, I mean Cooks is an
outside receiver. It goes deep, okay, And and there's a
need for that for especially New England's offense, which runs
so many of those short crossing routes, and you need
to clear you know, clear it out and get some
uh more whip for the receivers to work underneath. But uh,

(15:02):
you know, New England will have away. Look, Josh McDaniels
in Belichick, everybody's criticizing. Damn, all they did was get
to the Super Bowl last year. You know. Now look
without a particular defense and right, and Kronkowski got knocked out,
you know, so he never had you know, his service
the whole time. They just you know, uh, they know

(15:23):
what they're doing offensively. The defense stunk in the Super
Bowl or they would have won the game. Like they
had a terrible plan on defense. Uh you know, but
because you know, so they could have actually been you know, uh,
you know, back to back champions. You know, and and
and you know, I don't think everybody'll be all on Belichick. Look,
the simple fact is with the benching of Butler, there's

(15:44):
something behind all that. But let's be honest with you.
He was playing terrible in the playoffs, like he was.
He he was sticking out like a sore thumb on
that defense. So they had a scheme where it's gonna
be all this man coverage. Not a scheme stunt, no question,
but they obviously never liked his matchup. I guess I
don't know, but you know, I don't question the sanity

(16:07):
of exactly what's going on there. I think there's a
rhyme and reason for everything. I think they'll stockpile themselves
with more good players, good picks that fit their system
and that that cares about winning, because that's all they
care about. I tend to agree with you. I tend
to and and to anyone who questions Belichick's like you can,
but he's been to eight super Bowls and these you know,
so many others would would dream of that success. And uh,

(16:31):
and even if he's done it with at times inferior talent,
Rob Ryan joining his talented defensivecording has been part of
two Super Bowl champion winning teams. Here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show, I had Jim moron yesterday. You had your
thoughts on Jim Mora. Help me read between the lines?
What what what is the messaging there when he says
he's a Josh Rosen's a millennial. What's the messaging there

(16:54):
when he said, look, he's he's got a lot of interest,
and yet he still tries to back it up. Look,
I think he's the best quarterback in the draft. What's
your take on Mora's take on his former quarterback. I
think it's I think it's just strange that that this happens, like,
you know, to me, I think, you know, he comes
out and says, well, he'll be the best, but he's

(17:16):
covering his own tracks after saying he's a millennial. He
has to be challenged, he's not interested in football. Uh,
you know, it just seems the timing of it just
seems strange. And then also, uh, look, okay, if you
didn't get along with your quarterback or whatever, Uh, you know,
these are the best coaches in football that he's getting

(17:36):
ready to go into. He hasn't played for the best coaches. Okay,
that's just the simple fact. Okay, the one kid used
to coach in the league and he's stunk, and they
got him as the offensive coordinator last year. Look, you know,
he's going to get better coaching. He's gonna be challenged
more mentally than he's ever been challenged in his life
to go in and be a quarterback in the National

(17:57):
Football League. I mean, there's easier jobs out there. So
I think you if this guy, you know, you know
he's so smart and all this, well great that you know,
that's what you want your quarterback. So, uh, I don't
understand it. And and look, uh, you know More got
him to come to u c. L A s him.
I'm sure you know he had to like him at

(18:17):
one time. It just maybe he still likes him. I
don't understand, you know, Robert rob It. It strikes me
as this he said what he said, and then and look,
he's trying to be part of the media and he's
you know, he's he's been on. He came on with us,
and he was great with us, and he really kind
of tried to explain what he meant. But in one
of those things where like do you ever lie to

(18:39):
somebody and you want to talk your way out of it,
don't you over explain? No what I meant? Right? Like,
you go into this whole where were you last night?
I was, I was at Jimmy's house. But first he
went to Steve's and then we went down the street.
We stopped store, you know, the liquor store. We stopped,
and then we went to this. But right that kind
of feels like what he's doing, like he's he understands, Oh,
maybe I said something I shouldn't have and now I'm

(19:02):
I'm I'm just keep I tell you more to try
and explain it, and actually ends up looking worse even
though nothing he's actually said is all that bad? Right? Well,
I mean, you're right, but it's getting such national attention,
you know, which makes it bad. And the timing of
it is not good for Rosen, you know. But you know,
is that an effect where he gets drafted or anything.

(19:22):
Absolutely not, because everybody's gonna know this kid inside out,
and if you and if he's a kid that that
uh really doesn't like football, then he's not he's gonna
fall in the draft. But it's not because a lot
Moura said, you know that there's no way it is
so uh, you know, it's but you know, that's a
great uh take on everything, Doug, because hey, everybody's been

(19:46):
through that. You know, let's make some other stuff up start,
uh and keep adding to the story. You know. That's
that's a pretty interesting way to look at it, because
every day there's a new comment. Um, you've been with
the Cowboys because you're their defensive coordinator and um you
saw that was back when Dez was more at his
peak athletically. As of now, des is still on the

(20:09):
Cowboys roster. How do you how do you think that
relationship evolves as we get closer to the season. I
think I think Dallas will keep Dez. I think does
means a lot to that organization. They've got a lot
invested in him. I think, uh, you know, the Jones
is really believing in that young man. And uh, you know,

(20:30):
I was there when he was at his peak and
he was fantastic. But obviously, you know, the injuries and
things like that have probably slowed him some. But I
would never count this kid out because he is a
fierce competitor. And I just think I just think, uh,
you know, hopefully des is you know, has a great
offseason hopefully get healthy. You know, because this guy played

(20:54):
My last year in Dallas, we were trying to make
a playoff run, and at the very end he had
they had told him he was done for the year,
and he refused to make that. He's like, no, I'm
gonna play. He had to put some kind of casts
on his hand, and he played the last three games
even when the doctors declared him out. I mean, this
kid's done everything for that organization. So it's not like

(21:15):
they can just say, oh, let's move on from and
give up on him. They know how special the kid is. Uh.
Did he play very well last year? No, But you know,
I think there's other issues that that team had as well,
So I think bringing him back let them all prove
it this year. I mean, look, Jason Garrett's gonna have
to prove it this year or they're gonna run him out.
I mean, that's just the fact of business. Lenahan, des Bryant,

(21:39):
all these guys, you know, I think, I think, what
about that for a year and it could be special?
What about Dak, Like I I understand that getting Dak,
you know, in the round, they got him and saves
him a ton of money. And he's way better than
they could have thought when when Romo went down. But
what if we're all kind of dancing around the thought
that maybe DA's just not that good? You have you know,

(22:01):
I saw him play in college. He was exceptional. But
but I understand what you're saying. You know last year,
you know, to me, he's actually to me, he reminds
me a little bit of Tyrod Taylor where he protects
the team. He doesn't throw a lot of interceptions. You know,
he realizes the value of the football and uh, you know,

(22:21):
so he protects the team that way. Where Romo. The
nice thing about Romo is he believed in himself so much.
You know, I'd be like, well, you know, he could
have some of the greatest comebacks around because he could
bring the team back because he was that good. But
he can also throw he in some bad games, like
you know, you'd be in the game and all of
a sudden, two pictures, you know, for touchdowns, and you lose.

(22:43):
So I think in what made Romo and and Dez
Bryant so good is Romo believed in himself. And you
get one on one coverage with Dez, he throw it
up there because he knows des is great. This that's
not really this kid Prescott what back. He wants the
throat to the open receiver and they're going to be

(23:06):
all the way open. They don't have anybody that that's
all the way open anymore, right, even the kid in
the slot who's super quick. But now people know how
to jam them. Right. But you know, when when you
have days out there, sometimes you just gotta wing it
out there and let him make the you know, have
the fight to go get the ball. That makes him better,

(23:26):
That gets him in the game better. Uh, you know,
starts script and plays for Daz early get him going.
And it's like, well, why do you have to do
all that for one player. Every team in the league
does that for their playmakers every week. Rob, great stuff,
love you really appreciates joining us. All right, take care
of all right, Rob Ryan, somewhere from a wind tunnel

(23:47):
in southern California, joining us. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Fox sports radio dot com and within
the I Heart Radio app. Do you see that r
G three signed today with the Baltimore Ravens. Uh Robert Griffin,
the third and It's funny, like, do you guys knowe?

(24:09):
Can you name all the teams that a r G
three has played for or has has been a part
of What do you Got music? You wanna take a shot?
Don't look? Isn't it only two Redskins, Browns and out
well to prior to the Ravens. It's a three total.
He's played for two. Did you work out for somebody
last year? Yeah? But I don't think he actually was

(24:32):
on a rock. He was not actually on a rock.
But that almost shows exactly how far he's fallen. You
know the fact that he went to work out for
people last year, so he signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
He hadn't played in the NFL in a year And

(24:53):
it could be me, but I this just brings me
back to why Colin Kaepernick isn't in the league. Like
con Kaepernick had more sustained success than r G three,
And though he's had injuries, r G three had to
a c O injuries and he had a dislocated ankle.
Like so if you want to say, well, r G

(25:13):
three was a better runner when healthy, maybe, but I
M been healthy. Ain't the same guy. And though there
are throws that Kaepernick can't make. And Kaepernick did get
beat out. He did get beat out by um by
Blaine Gabbert. Uh. The fact is that Robert griven the
third actually at one point in time only did you

(25:37):
get beat out by h Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
Remember he was there was a time with the Redskins
where he was playing defense on their um on their
in practice squad defense. But Kaepernick isn't in the league
because as we as I pointed out last hour, you heard,

(26:00):
I'm gonna play for you up coming next. Johnny Menzel
his interview with Dan Patrick earlierge Today on Fox Sports Radio,
and one of the things Manzell talks about is when
he when he first got there and Brian Hoyer was
the starter. When he first got there, there wasn't a
quarterback in the quarterback room who was really helping him.
And in his second year, Josh McCowen really helped him.
Now Joe Flaccos there, he doesn't necessarily need anybody to

(26:24):
help and support him. Although r G three, if he
wants to stick, he better buy into the idea of
converting to the Church of Flacco and being about helping him.
But one reason that Kaepernick hasn't been signed is that
he's never he's a guy that wants to be a starter.
Remember when he went to Seattle last year, they're like,
you know, he's really a starter, Like we think he's

(26:47):
more of a starter. That was code. That was all
Pete Carroll talking code, and that was code for he
doesn't understand what it takes to be a backup. What
takes me a backup is you gotta be all in
about the starter and if everything goes wrong, then you've
got to be good enough to play. But remember last year,
Flacco had a bad back, hadn't been playing well, and

(27:09):
it was talked that he wouldn't be ready for week
one of the season, and they were thinking about tinking around,
kicking around the idea of signing Colin Kaepernick, and then
his girlfriend at the time and I don't know if
they're still together. Had the meme which uh which which
likened the owner Steve Baschatti of the Baltimore Ravens to

(27:34):
the slave owner from Django unchained and like an idiot
can draw a parallel to Oh, so he's a modern
day slave owner. That's what you're calling the man who
may employ your boyfriend who's She's a radio host in
New York and a pretty popular one. It's not like
she has like five followers. That doesn't necessarily matter about

(27:57):
the number of followers. But it became viral, and viruses
can kill things, and that virus killed Colin Kaepernick's chance
to get to the league with the Baltimore Ravens, a
town that they got a police department that's been accused
of several times over planting evidence on people they've arrested,

(28:21):
Like the town probably could have used it, could have
needed it. But I'm not gonna hire You're gonna hire
somebody who calls you a racist, who calls you a
slave owner like gns you to Django and change. No thanks,
no thanks, r G three being back in Lea. R
G three was not a good coin. He wasn't at

(28:42):
his best, He wasn't as good as Kaepernick at his best,
and at his worst, he was far worse than Kaepernick
ever was. But pack Kaepernick's divisiveness off the field, his
divisiveness in the locker room, and more importantly, his inability.

Show Fox Sports Radio. What's your level of nervousness going
to the dentist? Uh, not nervous at all, you know,
just learning little clean up, you know, the annual type
of things that do every six a month. So I'm
nothing to be nervous about. Are you a big dentite?

(29:43):
Like do you go all like you have no cavies
and you're like this is a point of pride, or
if you like previously had a bunch of issues and
every time you go in there's some drilling, some sawing,
some uncomfortableness when you're done. Oh no, I like to
keep up with it so that I don't have to
do that. So you know, I go, you know, ever
six months or pretty much as much as I can
to make sure everything's all good, so I don't have to,

(30:04):
you know, get me to the work, because I you know,
I did not like that as a kid. I had
it done once and it was so painful that it
left scars. You know. I mentally from now I make
sure new or times so that I'm good. Geno Smith
joining us on the Doug Outlip Show. Why the Chargers
You've had opportunity? I know you had a bunch of opportunities.
Why are the Chargers? Uh? You know, I really believe
in what the direction of the team. Honestly, I think

(30:27):
they're they're headed in the right direction. Um. The front
office guys, you know, the GM, Tom, Coach Lyne and
I who um have a bit of a report. I think,
you know, he's he's a perfect guy for the job.
I really believe in what he's doing there. I like
coach wins and Hunt in the offense, and you know,
I just think that it's a place where I can
spit in um as well as you know, grow uh,

(30:48):
and also a place that I may be able to
settle in and you know see one in the future.
Go so UM. I think it's Uh. I think It's
a great move on both sides. You mentioned Anthony Lynn,
he was but the running backs coach with the Jets.
When he was with the Jets, right assistant head coach,
and then that's coach. What what I mean? It's gotta
be weird to go from like last time you saw him,
he was assistant head coach running now he's the he's

(31:10):
the head guy. How difficult? And again, last time you
were the starting quarterback and now you're coming in to
be the backup for Philip? What's what's the role kind
of reversal from both sides? What that? What's that gonna
be like for you? I was going to be smooth,
you know. Uh, even when we were on the Jets.
You know, I had always believed in coach play, very coaches.

(31:32):
I think you know, most coaches goal is to be
a head coach one day. And so uh, you know,
he's a guy who who had always been a leader,
you know from day one, the guy that I went
to when I needed advice, Um, who who is very
very approachable, you know, a guy that you can go
up to and talk to about just about anything. So um,
with that being said, you know, it won't be anything

(31:54):
uh different now. Um, you know, I'm going to go
in there with the intentions to you know, up the
Queen win and you know, help help coaching m You know,
I believe in him and I think you know, what
he's doing there some some great things and I think
it's gonna be, uh you know, a great year for
the team and for the city of l A. Was
it a mistake to stay in New York and signed

(32:14):
with the Giants? Not at all, Not at all, Um,
it was a blessing, you know the year previously. Uh,
you know, I got a start against the Ravens then
you know from my A c L unfortunately, and you know,
just to be able to stay in the team city
didn't have to move far while recovering from that, I
think helped out a bunch you know, was familiar. Uh

(32:35):
nothing when they had to change obviously changing worker rooms
and you know, different personnel and different staff, but all
in all, it was still very familiar to me. So
I feel good about it. Yeah, I would only offer
this though, I mean, look at I was in New York,
you know, going back last year when when you signed,
and obviously everybody remembers when they decided to to try

(32:56):
and you know, to start you instead of Eli. It
was that as you had been with the Jets, and
because there was some negativity because of how it ended
with the Jets. I mean, I think people forget well,
I think it was the two thousand fifteen season, your
last game you basically pitched a perfect game, your last start,
you know, start before the one in which Tory Gracio.
You had a great start with the Jets, but because
there were still kind of some negativity with your name,

(33:18):
because it didn't work out with the Jets, you weren't
able to get that fresh start, you know, right, so
when when they pulled elive, like well for Gino, we
don't love Gino did? Is that? Is that a fair
assessment of why it it? Maybe you weren't as embraced
as you could have been. I think maybe, you know,
I think maybe. But all in all, that's time my
position to word about I got the opportunity, um Man,

(33:42):
I went out there and you know, hopefully showed that
you know, I could still play, still started with which
is my goal. You know. Obviously going to a backup role,
you understand that there is a different thing. Um there
are some things that you know, responsibilities that may be
different than being the starter, but all in all, you
still have to compete. You still have to get better

(34:02):
as a player. And I don't think many people have seen,
you know, my progress. And that's the thing, you know,
It's not about what happened with the Jets, just that
they haven't seen the progress that I've made. And I
think the coaches in coach Land and a lot of
you know, GMS and a lot of people, um, you know,
no football have seen that. And they talk about it,
but you know, to the average span, they're just going

(34:22):
from you know, why don't be done from l A
and I'm forcing to leave. There were some uh you know,
some mistakes made on my part with the Jets which
out you know, on up to and and I've moved
on from so uh with with a new fresh start
in l A. You know, I look forward to, uh
just showing people what I'm all about. You know, that
stuff happened when i was twenty twenty three, twenty four

(34:43):
years old. I'm not pointy seven. It's gonna be my
six year in the league. I've learned a ton of football,
uh you know, I've I've been you know, engulfing myself
in the playbook and into the film room. And so
those are the things that I'm about. And that's the thing.
Those are the things I want to show showcase when
I you know, get to ls know. Um, you know Philip,
he still lives in San Diego and he drives that

(35:03):
he has like a converted van and yeah, so my man,
you you gotta get in the van right Like that's
how you know if you've made it, Like if you
get to ride, because all he does is watch philm
in the van up and back. You gotta get in
that cake, Philip, can I can I hop in the
van now. I don't know if you're gonna uber home
from San Diego when it gets there, but that would
be a pretty cool van to to soak up the

(35:24):
knowledge and know the playbook. Man. I mean I'll be
I'll be in the van or the car or wherever
he needs me to be. Man, I'm gonna be there.
I learning from Philip. You know, he's a He's a
great quarterback in my opinion, the Hall of Fame quarterback.
It's done a ton of great things in this vide
Just play some you know, some some really good football
for the past couple of years. So I look forward to, uh,
you know, working with him and learning from him and

(35:45):
just being around him and soaking up all the knowledge.
That last thing, when you were drafted, of course, there
was some scattering reports which had negative things written about you,
your background, your style of play, your leadership. We're hearing
him that about some of the quarterbacks are getting ready
to be drafted in this draft. What's that like? The process? Right? When?
When when you're hearing people pick apart who you are,

(36:08):
how do you handle that internally? When everyone's talking about
you and it's really hard to defend yourself. You know
what I'll say, Um, the only way to defend yourself
is to play well. Because no amount of talk, tweeting,
or anything of you don't get that stuff. There's always
gonna be people who will say negative things about you,
Like there's always gonna people who's gonna be people who

(36:30):
don't like you. Um, that's just the way that the
world works. But you know, you go out there and
you perform, and you know you show your teammates and
your coaches that this is your passion, this is what
you love to do. UM, study to listen, and then
you know you do yourself. Um, and I think some
of that stuff will go away, well completely go away,
who knows. But uh, you just gotta continue to work

(36:52):
and block out and make say you just go about
your business as a professional, because that's what you are.
You said, Hey, look some of those mistakes I made
when I was super young. I'm in my twenties. Um, there,
there's there's the question of these guys. You know, all
of them are getting played early now, right, and they're
getting played early because they got a four year deal
not there's not the sign huge signing bonus money that

(37:12):
like the Sam Bradford's got, so you play them right away.
But some of these things you you kind of had
to learn from doing, learn from living it. Um, what's
what's the better tactic? Is the better tactic to play
guys right away or further than to sit and learn
and become because the professional you are now, Like if
you knew then what you know now, it wouldn't succeeded
still be the quarterback of the Jets. On the other hand,

(37:32):
you might not know what you know now. If you
had known it then you know what I'm saying, Like,
what's what's the better way to go about with these quarterbacks.
I will say, if you have uh, you know, it's
important to have a better quarterback on the on the
omni roster. So if you have a vetterom quarterback, um,
you know, which we didn't have at the time, you know,
with myself and Matt sim the whole year and you

(37:53):
know Matt was But if you have a better quarterback,
who can uh you know, kind of up that court
that young guy gets, you know, past the learning curve
and you know, giving those subtle tips that he's learned
throughout his time in the league, then yeah, you can
play him right away. Um. And I don't think it's
very you know, I don't think it's like specific to
the person. You know, everyone's different. So, um, some guys

(38:17):
need to sit back and kind of watch and learn.
Other guys they have to learn from experience. I'm a
guy who you know, I enjoyed being out there and uh,
you know it's kind of making those mistakes because I
had to learn from you know, I was kind of
baptized by the fire and you know, all those things
I think helped me get to this point. So um,
there's never you know, one way to skin a cat,

(38:37):
but one way to get to a final definition. You know,
there's many you know, roads and paths that you gotta take,
and everybody is different. So um, I would say it's
very important to have a veteran guy who can seat
the young guy and show him the ropes um, because
if that will help out a bunch. I think you've
seen that in many cases in the NFL, you know,
with Zack and Tony Romo and how well that happens.

(38:59):
So um, if you don't have that, man, I think
it may be a little bit harder. But then again,
you know, who knows the guy win the Super Bowl?
You know, nothing I'm possible. So I think every guy
has his own journey, his own path, and uh, you know,
I think you just gotta find out as you go.
All right, n l A. Yet are you still? Where
are you right now? I'm home Miami? You know l

(39:20):
A is better than Miami, right, you do understand this? Uh?
Yeah it is. Yep, you said, have you sign with
the Dolphins? You would have said otherwise. I'm just I'm
telling you're gonna be out here three months and be like, yeah,
you know, it's it's it's it's it's deferently you know
what what's great about it is, I've actually um been
training in l A for the past five years. I've

(39:41):
been going to Tom House who he uh he trains
out there. He gets to train out there at USC.
Now it's that at Golden West Duco, which is right
there in uh in the Irvine. I'm a good very
close to where I'll be, my man. I'm a Golden
West Junior College alum. I played, I went to I
went to Notre Dame for a year in Oklahoma State
in between and too, Golden West got my A. So
I know exactly where it is. I know exactly the

(40:02):
guys you through with. It's actually in Huntington Beach. We
need to talk when you get out of here, because
I wouldn't. I would encourage you when you get out
of here. When you want to buy, you want to
get rent of place. If you buy a place, rent
a place to what you hear s s that way.
You have a good day, you have a bad day everyway.

congrats on the new deal. Best of luck at the dentist.

(40:44):
Heart Radio app. I care about the Johnny Manzell interview.
That's what I care about, all right. So here's what
I heard in it. UM. I heard a lot there.
I heard some accountability. I heard him go like, hey,
look there's other things that I could point to Cleveland
not putting a vet that Brian Hoyer's who he was
talking about. He didn't mention Brian Horyer by name. Obviously

(41:05):
Brian Horyer wanted to compete. He's not wired maybe to
be that that kind of backup, even though Hoyer had
been a backup with the with the Patriots or um.
But I did hear some has some of them being critical,
some of it though being you know, painting a realistic
picture and two people. Here's where Manziel might be mistaken
and might not know. He said that the hat Cleveland

(41:28):
done their research, they would have known that. I wasn't
a guy who came in and watched every day, watched
watch tape every day. Remember why he was drafted in Cleveland.
They had done analytics, They had done research, all right,
they had done analytics, They had done research, and what

(41:49):
that showed them was that Teddy Bridgewater should be the guy.
We don't even know who where Johnny Manziel ranked in
terms of of quarterbacks. And the story goes that the
owner saw a bum and the bums said you should
draft Johnny Menzel. Manzel got drafted because he was so

(42:10):
incredibly popular. So to to not to say they didn't
do their research, they probably did. And there I always
there's an expression in professional sports which is owners Own,
Owners Own, And what that means is you can do
all the research you want, you can recommend and say

(42:31):
we want to draft this guy, we want to sign
this guy. But you know what, at the end of
the day, the owner is the one that signs the check.
So you could have wanted Derek Carr, you could have
wanted Teddy Bridgewater, you could have wanted whichever quarterback in
that draft you wanted. But at the end of the day,
the owner is the one that ultimately makes the call
because it's his check, it's his money. You spend two
to five hundred to a billion dollars in a franchise,

(42:53):
You damn right, I'm gonna decide who my quarterback is. Now.
The real flaw is if you draft a guy that
maybe you didn't want because of all these issues, why
didn't you surround him with people who would get him
up and would drag him to the facility and make
him hold his eyes open. But you didn't fool me
because I don't know if you guys remember remember when

(43:14):
he was drafted he said, Hey, I'm just I'm not
Johnny Football is not here. It's just John Manzel from Kerrville, Texas.
But then there was photos of him drinking Ace of
Spades and splashing champagne on everybody. That same night in
New York, he was doing the Double Lives thing. Who
was ever gonna know? We all found out. But there's

(43:34):
still a lot of pain there. There's still a lot
of therapy he needs to go through. How is married life?
It's new e he I mean he went back to
kind of Hey, look she's great, she's incredible, she doesn't
know much, she's not a sports fan like, Oh, I
don't know, Bud, I don't know. I mean, there's the

(43:56):
whole Listen, you have to completely go through rehab and
start a new life before you ever think about dating,
let alone you're married, right, These rehab relationships, they don't
they don't last. But I agree with him. In the
thirty two teams don't have to like him. Only one
team does. I agree with him. We talked about it
when he decided to end play in the spring league.

(44:18):
All he just needs reps. He just needs reps. In
needs practice. He needs to be around a team. And
I think the one thing that we're all learning or
not all learning, what I have said for years I've
stood on this chair and screamed at you, is this
is the whole reason that college exists. Yes, part of

(44:41):
it is the maturation process. But part of it is
even if you go through it and you're not that
mature and you go and do something, you start a business,
you go pro, or you do whatever you can and
you fail, the fallback is going to be all of
the college, all the people he went to his school
with at A and M that cheered for him. They'll
give him a job, they'll buy his come back sweatshirts,
even though they'll probably never play in the NFL again,

(45:04):
than give a shot. Why Johnny Manzoe, he want us
a Heisman trophy played for A and M, So you
do it. That's the That's the ultimate payoff for anyone
who says the kids don't get paid. In addition to
the scholarship which is really hard to achieve and really
really expensive and gets you into school you couldn't get into,
and support you while you're in your school, and supports
you when you're out of the school. I'm glad to

(45:28):
see he's come through the darkness. I'm glad he's found sobriety,
I'm glad he's found love, and I'm glad that he
loves football again. But this is a cautionary tale on
one to which I'm not sure worth the happy ending
part just yet rehab his heart. You could hear it
in his voice. It also should give us a different

(45:51):
way of looking at the party guy image of other athletes.
It just I understand that we don't want to be
the old guy going why are those kids drinking those bears?
But everyone knows when it's a bit too much drunk
with a champagne bottle on a swan, A bit too much,

(46:14):
missing out on rehab to go to Vegas and get dressed,
dressed up in an outfit, a bit too much telling
everybody you change and you're John Menzel from Kerrville, Texas
and you go out and spray paperweight with a sus
spades afterwards. A bit too much, you know the It's
like the definition of pornography, right, famous Supreme Court justice said,

(46:35):
you know it when you see it. It's you kind
of know when you see it when a guy has
got a problem, when it's a bit too much. The
last part is this, and this is the part which
all these college players declaring for the NBA draft. Hey man,
it's a job. It's a job, and I know that
everyone believes I'm gonna get rich, i'mnna make generational wealth,

(46:56):
I'm gonna change the world. Let's just take the NBA.
There are four and fifty NBA players in the entire world,
four fifty. Those jobs are hard to get and even
harder to keep. But just like any really really good job,
you better come ready to work. They don't just give
away the money because they thought you might be something

(47:18):
before they hired it
