(00:22):
of the Doug Gotli Show on Fox Sports Radio Boom
of America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I want
to get to the Dallas Cowboys and there to some
people stunning when last night over the New Orleans Saints.
I really do. But uh, this story is one in
(00:46):
which you're gonna hear about and we hadn't planned to
talk about, but it's come out and we're gonna have
to and it could dramatically, dramatically change the season in
the NFL. Last years leading rusher in the National Football League,
Leading rusher in the National Football League, Kareem Hunt. There's
(01:09):
a video of him pushing kicking a woman who again
and there is video of her striking him first. The
video goes back to I believe February of last year,
in Cleveland, Ohio. It's security footage from a hotel, and
(01:29):
so we have no like immediate reaction. This thing just
dropped on TMZ. But of all the questions you had
about the Kansas City Chiefs, they were, Hey, can Pat Mahomes?
Can he do it in the playoffs? Hey? Can they?
You know? Can they be high powered if you're playing
(01:50):
in bad weather? Oh, don't worry. They've got Kareem Hunt,
a great running back and a great running game. Can
that hide the fact that they have a poorest defense
even with Eric Barry coming back? And I I understand
that there is likely more to this story, but it's interesting.
(02:13):
You have Tyreek Hill who's on that roster, Tyreek Hill,
who played at my alma mater. And for people who
don't know this story, it's kind of one of the
things I touched on a little bit with my gund
earlier in the week. Like we I, I struggled to
even mentioned Tyreek Hills, a former Ocalhoma State Cowboy, even
though he has maybe the greatest single play or the
(02:36):
second greatest play in the history of the Bedlam rivalry
his last game with Oklahoma State. Um, they were they
were down, They were down more than a field goal.
I've I forget the exact score. There's a punt to
him and he fair caught the punt. It's a penalty,
(03:01):
but it was it was a bad pun penalty and
Bob Stoops chose to rekick, kicks it to Tyreek Kio,
who takes it to the house in Oklahoma State wins
the game. The very next week, he's arrested and charged
with domestic violence. They kick him off the team. He
ends up having to go to I think it was
Alabama State. And now he's the most dynamic speedster in
(03:26):
the National Football League, maybe the fastest player to ever
play in the Nation Football League. We talked with my
gund you about her earlier this week. Then he had
this to say about how he now advises his players
on what I found out that he got in a
situation and got in a heated argument with the girl,
and he made mistakes. You can't you. Here's what we
tell our guys here, Doug. If a girl gets mad
(03:48):
at you and hits you, scratches you, kicks you, grows
her phone at you, embarrasses you, what you do is
turn around and run away and run as fast as
you can don't touch her, leave her alone, don't push
her back, don't care if she does it in front
of your boys. Okay, then you turn around and leave.
He didn't do that, And unfortunately, what that's what we
tell our players. If you do anything other than that,
(04:09):
then you can't play here. This is just the way
it is. But he he he learned his lesson. He's
doing terrific. Forget being a player, he's doing great on
and off the field. Wow right, I mean that that's
kind of like epic foreshadowing earlier in this week for
that was Monday. For that, well, we're now seeing with
(04:30):
his teammate. I don't think you're left with any You're
left with no choice here. If you're the Kancie Chiefs,
no choice. You cannot play him this weekend. I'm and
I'm I'm not somebody who sits there and goes like, hey,
we need I'm i'm i'm gonna due process person, as
(04:52):
I pointed out, because we don't know about Ruben Foster,
and Ruben Foster is being accused by somebody who has admitted,
by her own accounts, whether she was pressured to say
so or not, she said she made up previous uh
statements about Ruben Foster abusing her. So I don't know what'squatter,
who's who. But I do know is there's a video
(05:13):
and that video ain't going away, and whether they're the
best or worst running back in the National Football League.
I struggled to find a way in which that guy
is gonna play football this weekend for the Kansas City Chiefs,
nor should play football this weekend for the kans Chiefs.
And then you come now to what are you gonna do?
What are you gonna do? Long term? Man? I like
(05:42):
this job. Like the best part about this job is
he gets to talk about the sports. Like we watched
the Dallas Cowboys get a lead, play from ahead, play
with poise, play with patients, watch their quarterback be smart
about his decisions even when, like in the second quarter,
(06:03):
could have been sacked in the end zone. He got
out of the end zone, held on the football, didn't
make bad decisions, kept him on time, kept him on target.
They did. Look, they just did a good job. And
they allow their defense to win games. And how's foolish people?
Look who said Jason Garrett was dumb to let his
(06:25):
defense win against the Houston Texans, and Jason Garrett only
had his job because of his relationship with with his owner.
And Jason Garrett this and Jason Garrett that, and you're like,
you know, maybe Jason Garrett knows his team better than
we know his team. And he said, you know, is
that great? No, But if we give dec a number
one option, all of a sudden, our number one becomes
(06:47):
our number two, are two becomes our three, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera,
And oh yeah, our defense is really good. It's the
one defense that's been able to slow down the Saints
all season long. M So, I like, that's my favorite
part about this job. Favorite part. My least favorite part
(07:11):
is casting judgment on somebody, especially when I don't know
exactly what went down. But in this particular case, I
see what went down. Kareem Hunt pushes and kicks a woman.
Cram Hunts smart enough to know the rules here, no
(07:32):
matter what she did, no matter how she did it.
As my Gundy said, adult males are teaching youth males
now time and again, walk away or run away. But
you can't do what he did. I just can't. It
(07:56):
doesn't mean that his career is over, just kind of
interesting parallel Addison Russell's being tendered a contract by the
Cubs today. Addison Russell somebody who served a suspension for
abusing his was his wife for fiance at the time.
And we will get to more of the story. And
but enough of the story is we got video. Gotta sit.
(08:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot
Leap Show weekdays in noon eastern three pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. We
had Jeff Brahman earlier this year after UM after they
beat Ohio State in football, and without asking him, I
tried to ask him, and man, Louisville's coming open, what
(08:40):
do you think? And if you listen to it? I
thought he was pretty honest. But he said they hadn't
yet reached the ceiling and he wanted to be part
of building this thing. But so many coaches had said
that in the past. Well, earlier this week it was
announced that Jeff Brawn will remain at Purdue as their
head football coach, and he turned down his alma mater,
Louisville for the same position. Coach brom kind of have
(09:00):
to spend some time of this year on Fox Sports
Radio coach. How are you very good? Good afternoon, Doug. Um. Okay,
So take me through the process of the conversations that
you your representatives had with your all mater. What's that like? Well,
I'll have to give you the short version of that.
You know what. Uh I was honored to be given
(09:24):
the opportunity to possibly come back and take over at
Malma Mater and the town that I lived in. And
it was a very difficult decision because, uh, I enjoy
it where I am at, we have unf finished business
left to be done. I love our football team and
our players which you get to know and your develop
relationships with them, and sometimes those uh it means quite
(09:48):
a bit when you see guys be able to fulfill
some of their dreams and hopes. I remember my first
year as a coach. We have found a way to
go to game at Purdue and there were a couple
of games where some seniors had come up to me
and embraced me and thanked me in a way that
I've never been thanked before, and it was just kind
(10:09):
of a an emotional embrace that you could tell it
meant a lot to them. So, you know, those moments
are special. So you know when this opportunity can open
in the end after long and hard discussion. Because it was.
It was hard, just because of all my ties. I
really felt that the timing was not right after two years, uh,
(10:31):
to go back and take over a program and leave Purdue.
And that's why I tried to do the right thing. Okay,
did you I mean, I'm sure you ran it by
like I know people say I ran it by my wife,
Like was it a long discussion? Was she engaged in discussion?
Did you do the pros and cons thing? Like? Well,
in terms, because that's a real part of this that
no one ever says. Everybody says, well, it's about the money,
(10:51):
it's about this, but it's also about your family and
bringing them home and uprooting them from the schools where
your kids are and all that stuff. Give me your sense,
give me this sense of the engagement with your wife, Jennifer. Right. Well,
for sure, it wasn't about the money. Uh, you know,
to be quite honest, when it came to my immediate family,
which I have a big family overall, but my immediate family,
my wife and my my two kids, my son and
(11:13):
my daughter. Um, it wasn't discussed a Ton. It was
I wanted their opinion. And when I asked about Louisville,
they said, I love Louisville. And I asked about to Purdue,
they said I love Purdue. I said, okay, well you so,
what do you guys? Tell me what would you like
to do? And none of them wanted any say as
far as, hey, that's your call, I don't want I
don't want that on my shoulders. I don't know what
(11:34):
the right thing is. You will know what it is.
We'll do whatever you want. Uh. And it was, you know,
you could tell it was a difficult decision for them
and they wanted to just put it in my hands,
which I said, okay. Uh. And then you know I
had you know, my brother Greg is on the staff,
my brother Brian, obviously, my you know, parents are a
(11:55):
big part of us, and my representation is from the
same whole town as me as well. And yeah, you know,
we just kind of gathered in my office and just
try to hammer out all the different scenarios of Y
two and why not too, and make comparisons and try
to analyze as much as we can. And I just
you know, the job had been open for you the
(12:17):
last two weeks of the season we had to play
and finish the season with that out there. So it's
been on my mind quite a bit, and I just
in my gut felt that, you know, the right thing
to do it this time was to stay at Purdue
and finish what we started. Okay, And and here's here's
another honest as honest and answers you can give me.
(12:38):
Jeff from head coach Perdue joining us. So it was
announced which day My days are kind of running together,
I apologize it was what? Um? It was announced Wednesday
probably evening? Um? And did you did you decide like
on Monday and then sleep on it? Did you side
on Sunday and sleep on it? Or did you just
decide and then you called your boss and you said
I'm staying. You called Louisville or had your rep called
(13:00):
Louisville and say I'm I'm staying. Like what was I'm
always intrigued on how people ultimately make that decision. Well,
that's a good question. And uh, you know, once again,
I I tried to do what I would one done
to me. Uh, you know it was it was really
not until late Wednesday afternoon early evening were I felt
(13:22):
I knew what I wanted to do, but I had
people disagreeing with me, and uh and uh and I
get it. You know, a lot of the people that
are close to me in that realm are from the
city Louisville, and they have a lot of close ties
and it means a lot to them. Uh. So I
don't know if we were all in agreement, to be
quite honest with you, Uh. And that was the hard
(13:44):
part is I had to make the final decision. And
when I did, uh, you know, the first thing I
actually did was uh, college athletic director at the University
of Loule Events Tiree, and informed him of my decision.
And then after that I called our athletic director, Michael
Benski had formed him my decision. Uh. And then from there, uh,
(14:05):
it was over with and uh so I I got
on the phone with both and and uh I told
him what I thought and uh and then from there
we're moving forward. When you woke up yesterday morning, any regrets,
you know what, I don't have regrets. The thing that
made this so hard is I've just got a lot
of you know, myself, my brother Grey, my brother Brad,
(14:27):
We've we've kept homes in Louisville, our whole life where
we worked, especially me, so you know I've gone. We
go back every year. My family probably goes back more
than me. Uh So I didn't I knew with this
decision there wasn't a simple answer that was going to
please everybody. I was going to disappoint somebody unfortunately, just
the way it is. So that's what made it hard,
(14:49):
as I knew certain people would be upset and and
uh not understand. But I had to you know, not
based a decision based strictly on that, but just what
I thought was right. So that was the hard part,
getting over the fact that some people are going to
be upset at me for making a decision that they
don't maybe understand or agree with. And I don't like
(15:10):
to you know, make people mad, especially when it comes
to just choosing where to coach college football. No I understand.
I'm like, listen, it's some crazy person at a bomb
threat of your old high school. Like I just you know,
people lose their mind over this. But but you're like, look,
Perdue is not a traditional power, right, It's just not
and not that Louisville's traditional power, but it is home
and it is in what I think people think of
(15:31):
and and I would probably disagree with them if you
look at the top of that thing with you know,
Florida State and Miami eventually will figure things out. In
North Carolina obviously made a great high with Mac Brown.
They're gonna figure some stuff out. But the A c
C is seen as easier to get it going. Gluisville
had to go in the last couple of years until
the bottom fell out this year. Um So why that's
That's what I think football people want to know, is
(15:54):
why Perdue over Home and Louisville where it's been proven
you can win at Louisville previously. You know, Produce two
years ago gave me a chance to be their head
coach and a leader. So basically, in my opinion that
that comes somewhat like a marriage. You know, you can
have all the friends that you have out there and
have a good time, but they kind of, uh put
(16:15):
their faith in me to lead their program. Uh. And
I feel like at this point we've done a reasonable
job of getting it at least closer and being competitive,
and I feel like there's unfinished business that, uh, if
we can keep this going playing in the Big Ten.
We have the second toughest skids in the entire country.
We have a great non conference schedule. We played top
teams every year. If if you can get it done here,
(16:36):
you can go to the championship as well. And if
you can get it done here, you could do something
that no one thought could have been done. And to me,
that's what makes something really special, is being able to
do something that no one thinks could be done. And
obviously we've got a ways to go, but I think
we're making strides, and I think that the story is
not over, and I didn't want to leave this story,
(16:59):
uh in the middle of movie when there's a possibility
that we can get this done and make it special.
And as a coach, that's very fulfilling, uh. And it's
very fulfilling for the players that are playing for you,
that want to come and be a difference maker and
want to come and do something special. And you know,
I I played my college brought the University of Louil
for Howard Snellenberg. At the time, I had offers from
(17:21):
Notre Dame, USC Boston College, and I chose to go
there because I thought I could be a difference maker
and that he could help get me to the next level.
And all I know is I would have probably been
very upset if he left after a year or two
after I put all my faith in him. Yes, it's
a it's a very fair point. Um. What was your
reactional House State not just beating Michigan, but thrashing Michigan. Well,
(17:46):
it was. It was an unbelievable game. I'm not gonna
lie I didn't. Um, you know I would have predicted that. Now,
with that said, you know the House States very down
dominant performance, and uh, I know it's kind of pushed
their stock way back up to the top. And uh
it just shows how competitive the very top of the
(18:07):
Big ten is. Yeah, well we can listen. I'm sure
Rondel Moore and all those other youngsters that you've brought
into wes Lafayette are super excited to have you back
and coaching in the bowl game and coaching in the future.
Thanks for Thanks for not just joining us, but being
so honest with your responses, and we appreciate you spending
some time with this coach. Thank you. All right, that's
the head coach you have from the head coach of Purdue.
(18:29):
Be sure to catch live editions, So the Doug Got
Leap Show weekdays in noon eastern three pm Pacific. John
Middelkoff has a tremendous podcast. It's called Three and Out.
It's on the Herd Podcast Network. I have a good podcast.
It's called All Ball. It's also on the Herd Podcast Network.
It's gonna drop tomorrow, right when you get that thing
ready for tomorrow tomorrow, it's really good. Gets you ready
first Saturday hoops UH NBA stuff as well. John, I
(18:53):
know that you've probably seen the the video I'm guessing right,
the Kareem Kareem Hunt video. Um, so far the only
response is well, like, we knew of this incident, but
the videos is pretty alarming. What do you think happens
with Kareem Hunt? Yeah? I mean they played the Raiders
(19:14):
Sunday in Oakland. I'd be shocked if he makes the trip. Uh.
You know. It's just it's kind of an easy one
for the Kansas City in terms of how do you
not just suspend them or show some action, especially earlier
in this week Reuben Foster who was arrested. I guess
that was last Saturday night. Then he wasn't definitely suspended
(19:35):
there was no video that's actually going off a girl.
His ex girlfriends that made up the first claim that
previously like five or six years ago, made up another
claim on a guy. This one you have video which
is you know, if you're a human, it's just a
little disturbing to I mean, it is disturbing to watch.
It makes you uncomfortable. You can't if you're a guy,
you just can't touch a woman. It's just that black
(19:56):
and white. Uh, these players, I mean, that's come on,
Kareem's that's it's just moronic there. It's inexcusable. Now do
they is he's done for the year all that stuff?
I don't know. I mean they're they're best player. Is
a guy that had an incident in college? Who was
you know better when he was kicked at Oklahoma State? Right?
He was so and then no one talks about that anymore.
(20:20):
So we've seen these things in the NFL. I I'm
also sometimes Doug uncomfortable with the NFL. Is gonna get blasted.
We know everyone's gonna crush everyone on social media. Can't
we have higher standards in society? Like how did the
police not take action when they saw this video? How
did he not get in trouble that way, the charges
were thrown away. That that always makes me the the
(20:41):
NFL obviously it's a big bad wolf. We love going
nuts when they screw up. But to me, it kind
of a reflection like where we're our priorities, And I agree,
what's what's interesting here? You bring up a great point.
So here's what I said earlier, which is just like
five minutes ago. John Middlecoff three Now podcast, former NFL
scout joining Us. Doug Gotlics a Fox Sports radio for
just joining us. Kareem Hunt, star running back of the
(21:03):
KNCI Chiefs, at an incident with a woman back in February.
The NFL and the Chiefs are saying they're aware of it,
but a video came out today which showed the actual
incident in which he at at minimum pushes and rushes
and kicks a woman as she was as she was
as she was down in an interaction with a woman
where side at some point and she strikes him as well. Um,
(21:25):
but I believe that everybody's response to it, including Kareem Hunts.
But everyone's response to it is gonna determine Kareem Hunt's future.
And here's why. I say that, like, look, Ray Rice.
For as as awful as that video was, the truth
is that Ray Rice, all that the criminal justice system
(21:45):
put before him was a pre trial diversionary program and
where he had to go see counseling. Right, That's where
don't we have higher standards in society? Hit his fiancee,
knocked her out, dragged her out of the elevator, and
wanted to leave her there in the middle of a casino.
And the only thing our criminal justice system wild come
up with was, well, you had anything wrong so before,
so a pre child diversionary thing. And then because the
(22:09):
Ravens and because the NFL came out and what's viewed
as being so soft on crime even though the criminal
justice system was softer on crime than they were. I
think that's the biggest reason that ray Rice was out
of the NFL for the rest of his career. Yeah,
I also think an element and an angle with that
Ray Rice situation, beside it being you know, arguably the
(22:31):
most from an athlete's perspective, the most disturbing video will
probably hopefully ever see. I mean, it was just it
was jaw dropping that his career, he was an older player,
or running back that was dropping off. It was kind
of an easy one, this one. And and like the
Reuben Foster example, Rubens a second year player whose ceiling
is through the roof as in terms of talent. Same
(22:52):
thing with Kareem Hunt, who's a better player than Reuben Foster,
who's just a dominant running back for the best offense
in the league, who young, who still has several years
you'd think at playing at a high level, Like he's
not going away. I'll just be interested. You know, I've
been around coach read he is very you know, I
don't know the right wordy like open minded and stuff.
(23:14):
Clearly when it comes to dealing with troubled players in
long history of getting the most out of him. But
this is this is already gonna take on a life
of its own. He's gonna get suspended, you would think.
But for how long does he miss the rest of
the season, Like does he is he you know, just
does he put on that commissioner's list? You know? Does
the league get involved? Because I was a little shocked
(23:34):
at the league got involved so fast with Ruben, But
clearly they've kind of learned their lesson, Like we're not
messing with these things anymore. So this is gonna be
a fascinating next I'd say a couple of hours, because
you'd imagine something happens. Let's say they don't have him.
Let's say they don't have Let's assume they don't have
him the rest of the year. That would be my
that Let's assume how does that change them as a
(23:56):
football team? And I think it changes them a lot.
If you've watched Kansas City, I mean that they go
with Mahomes, Tyree Hill, and Kelsey. I. I tweeted this
probably a month ago. I thought that Kareem Hunt was
almost becoming like one of the more underrated players in
the league because Andy's one of his go to plays
as the screen pass that obviously goes to number twenty seven.
And Kareem's just a great running back between the tackles,
(24:18):
outside the tackles, He's just a He's just a great
all around player. So it would be a I mean,
it's it's not like Mahomes level, but it's it would
be a massive blow if you say, right now he's
just gone for the rest of the year. I watched
the Cowboys last night, and I want to get to
the Saints and what they exposed within the Saints. But
(24:39):
I I feel like this is partially validation for what
uh Jason Garrett had been doing previously in the season,
right like the like when he was so conserved against
Houston and other points in time they're like, oh, why
is why does he not not get the memo that
you shouldn't be conservative in two thousand eighteen, He's simply
playing to the strength of his team, the defenses atty good,
(25:00):
the running game obviously they had to work through the
control the clock, like, play to your strength. I feel
like this validates many of his decisions up until last night.
Is that a fair Is that a fair observation? I
think a little bit. I've already I've always been a
little more of a Jason Garrett guy. Now personally, I've
met him a couple of times. He was really nice.
So I'm biased, but I've always just kind of liked him.
(25:21):
What he's done in Dallas. I mean, they were kind
of a I mean just a train wreck of a franchise.
When he took over, he stabilized them. He's made the
playoffs several times. The one knock this year was like, oh,
they're passing game sucks. Well, then you realize until Amari
Cooper came that the receivers aren't that great. I mean
they were depending on Michael Gallup to be a dude,
and he's solid. I mean, he's a good role player
as you see now a Mari he's the one. He
(25:43):
gets shadowed by the Saints elite corner and it takes
the pressure off everyone else. And you're watching the game,
you're like, wow, Dallas can be a little more balanced
with Dac who's a good player but still somewhat limited.
But like you said, their strength is they have an
elite modern day defense. You know, mean they just the
team speed, those two linebackers, the pass rush, all their
(26:04):
they don't depend you know, on DB's hitting people. They
can just cover because they have elite team speed. And
you've watched in the last several weeks like that there.
If they play well, they are going to be a
very tough out come the playoffs. Doug Gotlib show on
Fox Sports Trader. You mentioned the team speed that uh
(26:25):
that that the Cowboys have, and so much of what
the Saints try and do is find your linebacker, find
your safety, or find the slot corner because they don't have.
Kamara obviously is a freak in terms of his versatility
and his athleticism, but outside of that, like Michael Thomas
is a great route runner, not a great athlete. They
don't without Ted Ginn, they don't really have a second
(26:45):
wide receiver. That's why they signed Dez bryant Um. They
just they try and find the mismatch, and it's harder
to find a mismatch against that defense. Is that accurate? Well, yeah,
most teams like the three really elite offenses this year.
The Saints, the Rams, and the Chiefs all have these
three running backs Kamara, will Hunt and Todd Gurley that
can just catch the ball like wide receivers. And Levian
(27:07):
used to be like that too. Well, there's most teams
do not have vander esh and Jalen Smith, you know,
anywhere close to that guy's playing like that. So you
can run just basic little wheel routes and option routes
for your running back. And at the end of the
game you look up and Christian McCaffrey does this all
the time. They got eight nine catches for a hundred yards,
and that's just you know, just operates. Nothing you can
(27:28):
do to stop it well Vanderesh and Jalen Smith. Last night,
especially Vanderesh was just making all these open field tackles
and instead of Kareem Hunt where he's usually at minimum
making a guy miss, and a lot of times just
wide open, they weren't gaining any yards. And that's like
you said, they have one wide receiver who he looked,
you know, pretty pedestrian last night. But he's had a
phenomenal year. But the knock on, he's not a blazer.
(27:49):
So if you have a quick corner, you can somewhat
shadow him, especially if you emphasize you know, they were
double teaming him. It was just hard for him last night.
They said we are not gonna let Michael Thomas eat us,
and we think our linebackers can at least hover around
forty one. Like who else you gonna throw to? And
Drew Brees answered that I I got no one else
to throw to. It might actually speak to Drew Brees
(28:10):
is greatness, Like how have they been this good with
a running back in a wide receiver and nobody else.
It's it's really kind of amazing. John Mitelcoff three Now Podcast.
Hold on for a second, let me quickly get you
an update. Great stuff. Dan Garziano, by the way, just
reported the cream hunt was sent home from the Kansas
City Chiefs facility. Uh so that that's one report is
to the first reaction from the Kansas City Chiefs. This
(28:31):
is the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. John
Middlcoff continues to be our guest. You know, it's interesting
you were talking about Jalen Smith and you're talking about
cal vit. Uh was it a vender Benders from from
Boise State. I was talking with Josh Rosen before their
game against the Chargers on Sunday and I was asking
about the difference in the NFL and he's like, you
know what it is? He said, everybody looks the same.
(28:52):
I go, what do you mean? Like, how must and show?
He goes, No, he goes, you know, the numbers are
really the only thing different. Linebackers now are like two
fifteen to twenty. You know, there's no there's no real
middle linebacker. You gotta find the mike, But the mic
doesn't look like a mike. Safeties look like cornerbacks, and
safeties look like linebackers. And he was like, everybody's body
(29:12):
type is becoming the same. Slightly difference based upon weight
and thickness. But that's that's really that's that's what's changing
and evolving about the NFL. Well, that that's what makes
the Cowboys so perfect, Like they're just the modern Davy defense,
and the Bears kind of are two with ro Kuan Smith,
like you, I know he lives in the Bay Area,
friends with them, Bill Romanowski, like that version of linebacker,
(29:33):
like that human that two down mike. When I first
got hired in the NFL in two thousand and ten,
you always wanted a couple of you know, mic linebackers,
two down mike's, and then you have a third down
nickel linebacker. Well, I think I was stupid. That sounds
right now like your third down the middle line, and
that guy's gotta play all three downs because people are
throwing on first and second down. Most teams throw a
lot on first down, So that that that kind of stiff, big,
(29:56):
two fifty pound take on the offensive lineman, stack and
ship d I don't know if the guy's dead, because
if you could play special teams or whatever, but that
guy is not winning in the NFL. No, I almost
feel like that guy has got to become a defensive end.
Yeah right, I almost feel like you have to retrain
and become a defensive end. Hybrid players are are all
the rage. John Mintelkoff joining US Chargers won't have Melvin Gordon. Uh,
(30:19):
they do have a red hot Philip Rivers. They seem
like they fixed their kicking game and now they have
as elite pass rushing a duo as you're gonna have
in Derwin James, as good as any rookie in the NFL.
And the Steelers, you know, the Ben Roethlisbergers doing the
Ben Roethlisberger thing, where like, I'll admit it, he did it.
That's that's Big Ben's deal. Um, But this is we've
(30:39):
seen this before where you want to buy into the
Chargers and they play somebody good and they let you down. Well,
how do they do Sunday night? What what team is
gonna show up? You were at the game Sunday right
when they just I mean they came out like a heavy,
they were coming for blood. Well that they're downtend nothing,
kind of asleep at the wheel at first, and then
all of a sudden they're like, oh, let's let's play
some football. Okay, maybe I turned on after the ten
(31:00):
nuhan and they were just humming. And that's when Philip
was going nuts that the might have been arguably the
game of the week last week. The Broncos looks fantastic
and it's hard to win in Denver like that is
not an easy place to win. The Broncos, oh way
crushed this draft, so they do have a lot of
young talent. Phil Windsay was running wild. But if the Steelers, like,
if they play well, and I will defend Big Ben
(31:23):
a little bit on this now whether he should have
said it publicly like James, he didn't need to jump
if he just runs and he's a deep ball threat,
you know, I mean's Oklahoma State guy, just throw deep.
He catches that ball he dove and that that I
don't know if that ended up costing him the game
and happened a little earlier, It's not like it happened
in the last drive of the game, but that that
hurt him. Uh Now, would Ben have called out Juju
(31:45):
or Antonio Brown? Probably not. It's an easy one with
the rookie, but when their offense is right with James
Connor had a bad fumble in that game. To me,
they can still beat you know they could beat anyone.
If you told me the Steelers just get hot and
win the whole thing, like to it's believable. So I
I don't know's I coined flip game. I don't. I
wouldn't feel confident picking either team. Um, Okay, a couple
(32:07):
of weeks ago, everybody's freaking out about Tom Brady and
his lack of accuracy. Now he's taking on the Minnesota Vikings,
who their defense was outstanding against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.
Had You like the Vikings ability to go on the
road and beat New England in December? I like it.
I mean, I don't think New England has been very
good this year, and Minnesota's kind of got their swag back.
(32:28):
They have so many good players. Like you said, their
defense is humming. Those two wide receivers are so damn good.
I mean that they are just awesome. I think Kirk
Cousins kind of got a bad rap this year. He's
played pretty well. That their offensive line is atrocious. Uh
John d Filippo, you know, first year coordinator, they're kind
of hitting his stride. I like Minnesota to win that game. Um,
and then you know, look, I think you look at
(32:49):
this schedule, and you look at the Philadelphia Eagles. They
got the Redskins, who aren't as good with Colt McCoy.
I don't know if they were gonna be any any
good previously, but they got all kinds of you know,
p our messes. But the Eagles now have to keep
keep pace with the Cowboys who have beaten them this year,
and then they have to go into Dallas later this year.
Where are you on the Eagles in terms of you know,
they made a trade to get a wide receiver and
(33:12):
they weren't willing to spend a first on Amari Cooper,
so they spend a third. And I don't really feel
like Golden Tate has been used all that much. No,
he hasn't. I mean it was it was a tough
spot because last year they kind of kicked it into
overdrive when they made the trade for Jagi. Well this
year their passing game and struggle. So I get the mindset,
but it just sometimes it doesn't work. You know, the NFL,
(33:35):
unlike definitely Baseball, it's not always a plug and play league. Sometimes,
you know, the scheme, guys don't transition right away. The
offense has already been having some issues this game. I mean,
can we officially call the Dallas Cowboys the NFC champs
if the uh? I guess that the Eagles win this game,
that would be good for Dallas because Washington would hold
(33:55):
pace if they win. But I don't think, like you said,
I don't think Washington's any good. I don't trust McCoy
at all. Uh, they had just had a ton of injuries.
I don't know. I mean, I I just think, to me,
the game is just doesn't really matter because I don't
have faith either, like Philly's gonna go on the road
into Dallas in a couple of weeks and win that game.
With Dallas now kind of having all the mojo and
just the momentum that they got, I I just can't
(34:17):
see it. I wouldn't say the NFC East ended last night,
but it feels like, how did the Dallas Cowboys not
make the playoffs? Regardless what happens on Monday night? Who's
the guy who can coach Aaron Rodgers and and get
him engaged? I don't know, Man, You're get as good
as mine is at thirty five years old, with that
much money, with that resume, it's gonna be a little
(34:39):
bit on Aeron to me to just look in the mirror.
I thought, last when did they When was that game
Sunday Night? To me? The downfall of that game, and
it's really been the downfall this year. And just because
he's older, he used to be make all these throws
with terrible footwork and he got away with it well
as he's gotten older. Maybe his arms, Frank is just
let's say it used to be pent now it's ninety
(34:59):
four sent Like we're talking incremental differences, but that's that's
the difference between a completion and just an elite pass,
which he used to make a lot of. And that's
killing him right now. Is he gonna go back into
the into the war room, in the quarterback room, into
the individual drills of practice, you know, for eight months
and left this guy like Bruce Arians. Let's use a hypothetical.
(35:20):
Bruce Arians is known as in your face, no nonsense,
we'll just light you up. Would would Aaron take to that? Would?
And I don't even think the Packers would even fathom
hiring him because that he probably wouldn't. It might be ugly,
but that would be the type guy that if he
was open minded, I wouldn't say resurrect his career because
he's still a really good player. You get him back
on track, kind of a little bit of renaissance. Great
(35:42):
