Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to AH. As we rolled towards Week seventeen
in the National Football League, that playoff picture getting a
little bit more clear as we headed to the final
weekend of this season, but there are still big questions
and we're not even talking about all the playoff teams.
There are teams that are missing out on the postseason
that have questions to answer, including the likes of the
(00:24):
Miami Dolphins in the New York Giants. We dive in
for the next three hours here on the Doug Gottlieb
Show and Bucky. As we sit here and we get
set four week seventeen in the NFL, I felt for
the last couple of weeks the college football playoff probably
hasn't had the biggest buzz that there there's been. We
started out great in the first year of the playoff,
but not as much maybe buzz because we get Clemson
(00:45):
in Alabama again with the NFL playoffs and we hear
all about the NFL ratings are down. I wonder is
there a buzz for the NFL playoffs because there are
a lot of blue chip teams I was gonna say programs,
but teams that we are used to seeing in the
post season that aren't there anymore. That's the lack of
the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers not being
(01:06):
in the postseason. There's that effect this year's playoff field
for in terms of excitement, because I think it does.
I think that there's something different about this year without
those blue bloods in the playoffs. Yeah. I think typically
when you look at the playoffs, it's about the stars.
The stars come out in the postseason play And the
difference is when you look at the NFC, the quarterbacks
at the top of the heap for the teams that
(01:27):
are the best. We're talking about Nick Foles, case Keenum
and Jerry Goff. No disrespected Jared Goff, but the other
two guys have been career backup. So you don't really
get excited about the prospect of seeing case Keenum square
off with Nick Foles in the NFC Championship game. And
the other side, when you look at the teams, you
have Pittsburgh and New England that are there, and you
get excited about Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger. Well, let's
(01:50):
talk about the other quarterbacks that are in play. Blake Borders,
does Blake Borders excited now, are you excited about Alex Smith?
R A. Are you really excited about Joe? I? Go
in the Mighty Baltimore Raisings office, lighten up the stage,
and then you see a struggling Marcus Murriota potentially getting in,
or Philip Rivers or Tyrod Taylor, and so I think
(02:12):
the difference is you don't necessarily have the star power
at the QB one spot that we're used to seeing
because we always want to see Aaron Rodgers play. We
all see some of those notable stars play. And when
it comes to Dallas, Dallas is always a big time market,
big big star quality, star power behind it. That's why
you don't hear as much buzz about it. But I
do believe old school football heads are excited about seeing
(02:35):
some of these defenses that will take the take the
field and how would those defenses hold up against some
of the elite quarterbacks that we've seen for long time Minnesota, Jacksonville,
seeing those teams go in the playoffs for sure. Philadelphia
has had their their moments this year with their defense
definitely a theme. It's funny when you talk about the
Patriots because I even mentioned it while we were sitting
(02:56):
here on Christmas Day watching Camps and Warriors, I was like,
you know, I'm getting Calves Warriors fatigue, And I don't
know if there is such a thing as Patriots fatigue,
but the fact of the matter is this time around,
they are the only ones who are carrying that playoff
flag for the blue Bloods. The Steelers as well. But
I think that when you look at the matchup of
the two teams, we feel that New England is just
(03:18):
better than Pittsburgh. They went they they want in Pittsburgh.
Earlier this season, They've had their number IT teams in
the postseason beat them handedly in the a f C
Championship game. So even having New England on the other
side of the of the bracket, compared from the NFC
to the a f C, it's difficult for me to
get excited because I almost feel like I have Patriots
fatigue as I'm looking at these matchups. And while the
(03:41):
Eagles and Vikings maybe a great NFC championship game, it
goes back to your point of the name brands of
these of these players, and specifically of the quarterbacks is
not there because a year ago we had Dak Prescott,
Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys being the number one
seed and when they faced the Packers in the NFC
Ampionship game, whoever wins that game is gonna still make
(04:03):
the NFC Championship Game worth seeing. I don't think we
have that necessarily in the in the a f C,
and I know we don't have it in the NFC. No,
we don't necessarily have the same kind of compelling matchups
when it comes to a surface level, but I do
believe there potentially could be some very compelling matchups when
we get to the second round of divisional round and
we see the number one teams finally take take the field.
(04:24):
I think the big thing that you want to look
for in the a f C New England and Pittsburgh. Um,
we've already kind of pencil them in that they're going
to be in the championship game, but I think we
probably should pause a little bit because when you look
at the potential matchups that could take place if New
England squares off with Kansas City, we have seen Kansas
City on multiple occasions put the beat down to the
New England Patriots, so that would be interesting to watch.
(04:46):
Even though for whatever reason we don't get excited about
Alex Smith, and then we saw Jacksonville beat down the
Pittsburgh Steelers. I think those would be compelling games. On
the other side of the bracket. What you're looking at
the last reseas right now if the season ended, would
be Drew Brees, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, or Russell Wilson.
(05:07):
To see one of those established quarterbacks that's played in
the Super Bowl take on one of the new school teams,
I think you would kind of buy into that. I
think right now is Week seventeen, there's some compelling games,
but it's hard to get excited about the whole schedule
because we're not gonna see everybody play. We will see
some people take off. Some people gonna treat it like
the preseason, so we kind of get in that low
(05:28):
before we get to the postseason. But I think when
we kick off next weekend, everybody be excited about the walk.
It's funny because when the Packers were eliminated, I know
that the Vikings fans took a lot of enjoyment in that.
I think the rest of the NFC did, at least
the teams that were in the playoff on because they
didn't have to face Aaron Rodgers. Outside of that, would
you really think about it? And you're a North Carolina guy.
(05:50):
If North Carolina isn't good in college basketball, college basketball
isn't as good, and and and and so it translates
into the NFL. When you don't have those teams being
in the into the postseason and those names, it becomes
an issue, and it's a it's a bigger issue. And
for ratings that have popped, that have been such a
topic of conversation throughout the entire season, You're right, Jacksonville
(06:13):
going into Pittsburgh where they picked up Ben Roethlisberger five
times earlier in the regular season, is great. But if
North Carolina gets upset, how about this, If Duke gets
upset like they did by South Carolina, won't take your
tar heels and say that lost. If Duke gets upset,
it's great for that moment, But all of a sudden,
now you have South Carolina playing Florida for a chance
to go to the Final Four, and you're like, oh, yes, exactly.
(06:37):
You want to see. You want to see the big names.
You want to see that those teams get to a
certain point. While you may not want them to win.
You almost want them to get heartbreak right at the doorstep,
or heartbreak in the biggest spots. And I think that
sort of drama that we have seen in the NFL
and we saw last year when Dallas loses the heartbreaker
at home, that sort of drama is not there. And
(06:59):
I just wonder on how compelling these NFL playoffs will
be two people outside of our football crazed minds that
we have, because there's just not a lot to draw.
There aren't even big no, we don't even have like
in Odell Beckham Jr. Type of personality or a J. J.
Watt type of personality, and that there are very few
personalities that we can even grab. Two on individual players
(07:21):
in the NFL playoffs that that make me just wonder
on how these will connect to other people. I think
gratings are gonna be down compared to other years just
because of this name brand that we don't have. Maybe
I think it really depends on which teams play in
those primetime spots. As long as um the league is
very very creative and selective on how they put their quarterbacks.
As long as you have Tom Brady, people want to
(07:42):
see the doing the pages Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh is a
household name. I do believe there's a bit of a
buzz about the l A Rams because they're exciting on offense.
They've got a young coach, Sean McVeigh. He's doing remarkable things.
I think there's some excitement there now at the top Philadelphia, Minnesota.
I don't know how many people are excited about seeing
them on like the bigger stage, but I do believe
(08:03):
you can see some excitement with Cam Newton playing, uh,
depending upon which quarterback gets in Matt Ryan or Russell Wilson,
there will be enough compelling storylines at quarterback that will
get people to tune in. And then ultimately it is
about seeing will the New England Pages be able to
go back to the Super Bowl again? They have dominated
the league for so long. I mean you're talking about
(08:24):
almost two decades where they've always been one of the
teams that's been in the Final four or the last
team standing. I mean, this is what you want to see.
Can Tom Brady and Bill Belichick find a way to
get it done again and face those teams that you
said it could be difficult matchups, whether it be the
chiefs of the Jaguars. I liked your point about how
the NFL is creative because you can choose it's It
(08:44):
reminds me of when the NBA Playoffs come out. You
know what Eastern Conference Series is going to be an
NBA TV for two or three games. You know what
game is going to be the first game of the
NFL wild Card Playoffs because they're gonna put it on
Saturday afternoon, and my guests, it's going to like the
feature the Jacksonville Jaguars and so whoever the Jaguars end
up playing in their wild card route is going to
(09:05):
be the first game that you see on Saturday. I
think it's perfect for the NFL and at least for
Fox's sake. With the Rams getting a home game, I
think they're gonna end up being the late game on
Sunday to have kind of that certain appeal. But you're right,
as they try to massage teams and put them in
certain windows, the NFL is is is going to need
to be creative this time around to put things together.
And it's funny on today as we talked about this topic,
(09:28):
because the biggest news out of the NFL comes from
the team, from teams like the Miami Dolphins, where Jay
Cutler says he wants to return. We're talking about the
I guess you could say backup quarterback in Minnesota and
Sam Bradford and maybe him coming back and seeing some action.
And then we're also talking about the backup quarterback in
Kansas City in Patrick Mahomes getting his first start in
(09:49):
the end. So we're not even we're not even ramping
up towards the playoff teams. We're talking about all these
other sub stories that are going on in the National
Football League. Yeah, any time you talk about the quarterback
position is going to generate a lot of buzz, a
lot of clicks um And I think all of those
stories are compelling. I think it is interesting that J
Coulor suddenly wants to return and continue to play again,
says that he wants to play football. That is intriguing
(10:11):
because this is a guy that we thought was retired,
was kind of done with his career, gets another shot
in the arm to play with the Minnesota Dolphins. He
has shown some flashes being to J color that he's
always been, but certainly when you look at the lack
of talent at the position, J Couler certainly could be
a guy that has din't play for a bunch of
different things. I was gonna say, is there a spot
because he doesn't want to come back as a backup
in I mean, did he do enough in Miami? It
(10:34):
is just that he was very familiar with to do
enough to get a starting spot in twenty eight team.
And I just I don't think that he did. And
I know there were some high spots for the for
the Dolphins, but it wasn't like there were extreme highs.
Missed a couple of games. I just look at the
other quarterbacking spots around the National Football League and I
just don't see where a team would be like, you know,
(10:55):
we need to bring Cutler and at this point, you know,
I think a lot of people we determine late in
the season. I think for j Color, I don't think
he would be a guy that would be very active
early in free agency. I think most teams will take
a weight and see your approach. Let's see if we
can find our guy in the draft. If the quarterback
is not there in the draft, maybe we pick up
the phone and Jay Color is a guy that we
can bring in. When I'm looking at his numbers from
this year. He completed six his fastest, had a nineteen
(11:19):
to fourteen touchdown the interception ratio. His passer rating is
at eighty point nine, which is below his career average. However,
tough circumstances, got picked up really really late, didn't necessarily
have the the advantage of having a four law seam.
Had to work his way into shape. He's talented, but
the people who like Jake Color will always be the
same ones that like him, and those who don't will
(11:39):
find a way um to move past him. I think
the other guy that is intriguing, what's up with Sam Bradford.
So now you're the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Bradford returns to practice.
Sam Bradford played in one game, was outstanding that one
game with a uh kind of molly walp to New
Orleans Saints the first game of the year. It's coming
off one of his best seasons where he led the
lead again completion percentage, had a twenty five touchdown the
(12:02):
interception ratio. His passer rating was almost one hundred and
So now you're looking at the prospect of having Sam
Bradford come back. You have case Keenu, who has been
a really really solid starter for you. What happens in
the postseason if Case Keendom kind of messes it up,
do you now turn to Sam Bradford as your number two?
Or do you keep him as your number three and
let Teddy Bridgewater be the number two. I think there's
(12:24):
some interesting conversation in dialogue that has to take place
in Minnesota over the next two weeks. And with Sam
Bradford's health and him getting better, I would have to say,
in case Keenom's defense, I'm not sure on how much
more Sam Bradford would do to help Minnesota and make
them even more dangerous. Considering how well Case Keenom is
played for for the Vikings so far. I mean Case
(12:45):
Keenum is played outstanding football. But I think what everyone
is waiting when is the clock going to strike? And
because that case Connesota, that's the same guy that we
saw for the l A. Rams. It's the same guy
we saw in St. Louis US and in Houston, and
he's always been a career backup. How long before he
comes back to being the guy that we always known him? Do? Bucky?
(13:06):
You just said there are guys who are always gonna
be j Cutler guys and guys who are always not
going to be Ja Cutler guys. That's actually the case
with Case Keeno. There are guys who remember him from
when he played collegiately at Houston, had said all those
records or had a great couple of games for the
Houston Texans. There are always going to be Case Keenom guys,
and then there are always going to be non case
Keenom guys. He's Bucky Brooks, I'm Dan Buyer or in
(13:28):
for Doug Gottlieb here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio. You can reach Bucky on Twitter at
Bucky Brooks. I am at Dan Buyer on Fox The
phone numbers eight seven seven nine nine on Fox at
eight seven seven six three six nine. So about that
quarterbacking issue in Kansas City, what does Patrick Mahomes need
to do in his first career NFL start? There Sunday,
(13:49):
we answer that question next here on Fox Sports Radio
Doug gotlib Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Bucky Brooks,
I'm Dan Buyer. We pose the question at the start
of the show. Is there enough name value, named brand
value to keep you interested in the NFL playoffs? And
d rich tweets in there will be something missing with
the likes of Aaron Rodgers. Not there, J J. Watt,
(14:09):
Ezekiel Elliott, Andrew luck O'Dell Beckham Jr. A problem that
we've had throughout the NFL regular season. Um John tweeted
in no here, there's not enough there for John to
be interested in the NFL playoffs. So like how John
just got right to the point and said, all right,
you know what, I'm good with the NFL playoffs. I'm
(14:30):
good with the NFL right now. Uh, it's pretty much
dead to me. But that that was according to John,
who does not like the star power that we've got
the postseason. Speaking of star power, he's Bucky Brooks, I'm
Dan Buyer. We are in for Doug Gottlieb starving of
his own rights on the Yahoo blog The Shutdown Corner
covers the NFL for years, Frank Swab joins us, Hey, Frank,
Marry Christ was happy, now you're good to talk to you.
(14:53):
We are, we are, we are. I was gonna start
with the the Pat Mahomes situation, but I'm to start
with this. Are you excited for the NFL playoffs without
Green Bay? Without Dallas without some of these star names.
I saw the tweet and Frank, I actually think you'd
retweeted it from NFL research saying that's the first time
in the Super Bowl era that the Cowboys, Giants, Redskins, Packers,
(15:17):
and Niners all missed the playoffs. So are so are
you excited with what we've got without these blue bloods
in the NFL playoffs? Oh? Absolutely, I mean I think
that you just look at the NFC and I can
make an argument for any of the six teams that
are going to make it. That's weird. Usually there's one
gimme in there, right, one team that's that's kind of
sneaks in limping along. Basically you're Tennessee Titans and an FC.
(15:41):
But you look at the NFC and it's six teams,
free fool. I can make an argument for all six.
And then the a f C we're you know that
there's a couple of teams I'm not so excited about,
but hopefully we're gonna get the superpower showdown in an
f C championship game week with the Steelers in New England.
So yeah, there's some blue bugs out there, and it's strange.
It's It's weird when you think about all those teams
(16:02):
being out, but I think that there's still it's still
the NFL. There's still good teams, and we're still gonna
have great storylines. And like I said, especially the NFC.
I think NFC is going to produce that, you know,
five great games. You know, uh, Frank, when you think
about the NFC, there's a lot of conversation coming off
that Money Night game with the Philadelphia Eagles. Are they
good enough to still get the Super Bowl? With Nick Foles?
(16:22):
What have you saying? What do you think about the
Eagles prospects of going on with the backup quarterback in
I think so I still looked money and I was uncle,
There's no doubt about that. And against the defense it's
not very good. But your weather was bad. It was
when they Derek Carl looked bad too, and he's a
pretty good quarterback. So I what do you say? I mean,
(16:42):
what do you do with Nick Foles? Now? Do you
if he did the week before throw for four touchdowns
and looked pretty good against the Giants? I don't think this.
Eagles teams are as obvious. They're not as good without
Carson went that's clear, but Nick Foles is not one
of the backups in the league that's incompetent. This isn't
a they're not playing bad Hunby now. I mean Nick
Foles has had success in this league. He has started
(17:04):
a playoff game before, he's been in these spots. He's
had success. And I think this Eagles team is built
to win even when out wins. They're They're good on defense,
as we saw Monday, and I just played well on defense.
They can usually run the ball pretty well. They got
good targets for Foles to throw too. And we've also
seen this before. It's not unprecedented for a guy to
come in and play well for you know, an emergency replace,
(17:28):
injury replacement, Jeff Hants. That were being the main example
Colin Kaepernick a few years ago. He was an injury
replacement for Alex Smith. He got that team to the
Super Bowl. I still believe in this Eagles team. I
kind of wanted to Fols play a little bit better,
and I do think Doug Peterson should play him on
on Sunday just to get him going again. But I'll say, yeah,
I still the Eagles got a shop. Frank Schwab joining
(17:50):
us here on the Doug gott Leave Show on Fox
Sports Radio. I'm Dan Buyer. Bucky Brooks is with me
as we talk NFL. Is Nick Foles the most important
guy in the NFC playoffs for for all of these
teams involved. That's a really good question. I can't say no. Yeah,
he almost has to be, because he's the one wild
card we kind of know where we're getting, you know,
(18:11):
I mean to answer that question, it's almost got to
be a quarterback, right, I mean, you're not gonna say
Everson Griston or somebody like that and a great player,
and it's and then you look, you know, you kind
of know like he's keenom By now has a baseline
like we're trying to know what we're trying the case
cam and then you got cam and Drew and even
you know, even with Jared Cosson experiencing, we can kind
of guess what he's gonna do. So you're right, I
(18:33):
think it probably is. It's probably Folds are going to
swing this thing one way or another. Either we are
gonna be talking about him like he's Jeff Hosteller in January,
or he's gonna shrup hole thing like you almost did
on Monday night, and it's and its Inconsistency's gotta be
just probably because look at again, he's had two games
played great and one of like terrible and the other
(18:54):
who are you getting? Whore you getting going forward? I
don't really know, but it's it's interesting and I just
feel bad for Eagles fans. I know a lot of
Egels fans friends with a a lot of Eagles fans. This
is really a year they could have done it. I mean,
if park Carson Wentz is still healthy, I think we're
all pick of Philadelphia, right, So it's just tough for
them to now have to try to do this about
you know, going to the other side, do you talk
(19:15):
about consistency and inconsistency at quarterback? What do you make
of the Jacksonville Jaguars. You're talking about a team with
maybe the best defense in football, but then you got
the Blake Bortles question. What do you do with Blake Bortles?
How's he going to perform in the postseason? We saw
him get off to a hot start in December, but
then he came back to earth against San Francisco forty nine.
How do you speak to the playing a full season? Yeah,
(19:38):
it's I was trying so hard to get on board.
I was trying, you know, three games, he looked great.
He's throwing the guys who had never heard of before,
undrafted rookies, and it doesn't matter which receivers go up.
Blake Bortles is doing the thing, and he's got about
ninety rating. And then Sunday happened, and you just say, well,
this is why, this is why anybody who was hold
(19:58):
him out, you know that skepticism to take a bow,
because you're right, it's Blake looked terrible. And I think
it was Chris Westling over at NFL dot com plainted
out that Blake's mechanics when in the trash in that game,
he reverted to his old habits with a long wind
up and and and it basically telegraphing every one of
his throws. He just looked bad. He looked like the
(20:21):
bad Blake Bortles. And that's the problem. Jackson is gonna
have to win three straight games to make a Super Bowl,
including you know not Kimmy and week in the wild
card round two, Titans have beat them already. If it's
the Titans and the Chargers are a very good team,
if it's Chargers, and then you're gonna have to go
on the road and back to back weeks against the
Steelers in New England, and it's just hard to believe
Blake Bortles can play really well and three straight playoff
(20:43):
teams it is. I Blake's had a good year, better
than any of us expected when everybody thought you had
Henny was going to start the season for them. But
it's just tough to trust him for three straight games,
maybe one, maybe two, but boy, putting together a three
hand streak in the playoffs like that, it's hard to buy. Yeah, guys,
I hated to burst the Blake Bortles bubble that everybody had,
(21:03):
but I just I would point out that his great
games came against the Texans, the Browns, the Cardinals a
game that they lost. The Colts were in there as well,
so the Seahawks. That will give him even against the
depleted Seahawks defense. But for the growth, it's like, Okay,
let's pump the brakes here. My brakes are getting done today,
by the way, but let's pump the brakes on Blake portals.
(21:25):
And I think it finally came through in San Francisco
this past weekend. That's just yeah, but it's it's it's
one of those things too that I think it has
to be mentioned though, when we talked about these Jaguars,
we just saw a team two seasons go win with
a bad quarterback. And I know he has the name
Peyton Manning, but he was bad that here. He had
a six giant rating. It is possible to win with
a bad quarterback. It's it's not easy, but when you
(21:46):
have a defense like Jashonville does, it's that's your path.
You can at least do it. But I guess that
Broncos team also had two home games to get into
the Super Bowl, which makes the easier. So yeah, you
probably are right at the end of the day, and
we should pump the brakes on that. Frank swabi Yah,
who's it's joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. Pat
Mahomes coming to your hometown or at at least you're
where you reside, uh in the Mile High City taking
(22:08):
on Denver. What are you looking forward to seeing Mahomes
in that week's seventeen matchup? Is the Chiefs are gonna
arrest Alex Smith. Oh my goodness, I'm excited for this.
That immediately became like the game I want to see.
I mean, other the you know, the games that they
have playoff implications. I'm excited to see this kid. I
was excited to see what he did in a preseason
and yeah, it was a lot of you know, improvisational
(22:30):
stuff and he wasn't exactly you know, Philip Rivers in
the pocket or anything, but he was exciting. He's got
these unbelievable physical tools and he gets a tough test.
This Denver defense maybe wasn't isn't what it was last year,
but it's still good. It's still playing hard, and I
think it's a very good test for the Chiefs. They
(22:50):
can they can still look they're gonna have a tough
decision this offseason. Maybe not fat tough. Who knows, Maybe
they've already decided we're moving on from Alex. We can
say if I think it's about twelve million on the cap,
we have my homes were going with him, So maybe
they made that decision already. But if there's any doubt,
to get a chance to look at the homes in
a regular season game against a tough defense on the road,
I think it's a great barometer to at least the
(23:12):
chess to know. Hey, here's what we got going in
the next year. Now we can make a decision. I
think there's a smart move. I'm really excited to watch
him play. I think you should play well. I think
he's a good player. I think he's ready for this.
I think he's that's sitting and learning from a very
very good teran. This is the game. If you're if
you told me you can really watch one game this week,
it's probably it. Just because I love homes. He covers
(23:32):
the NFL for the Shutdown quarter Blog on Yahoo. You
can find him on Twitter at Yahoo Swab. He's Frank Swab.
Thanks Frank, Well, we'll see you in a month in
Twin Cities. How about that, absolutely, guys. I appreciate again.
Looks forward to it, all right. Frank Swab joining us
here on the Doug Gottlieb Show. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm
Dan Buyer. You can always reach us on Twitter. I'm
at Dan Buyer on Fox and you can get Bucky
(23:53):
at Bucky Brooks. We are continuing to talk quarterbacks and
a pair that are entering the NFL that may have
more than they bargain for. We'll get into that in
just a bit, but first, Ralph Irvin brings us the
latest of what's happening in the NFL as we get
ready for a week seventeen. Hey, Ralph, well, thank you
very much. Dan and you guys were already talking about
Kansas City starting Patrick Mahomes at quarterback as they played Denver.
(24:15):
The Broncos will go with Paxton Lynch in that matchup.
Buccaneers receiver to Sean Jackson practice today in Tampa. He
looks to hit the field for the season finale, hoping
to get a little bit of redemption after a bad
year as Tampa Bay takes on a new Orleans Dallas
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones not looking to replace head coach
(24:35):
Jason Garrett says, quote, it's not in the best interest
of the Cowboys right now to look for a new
head football coach. Meanwhile, quite a quote from Hugh Jackson
today when asked if he's going to be around in
he had a most unusual comment, uh, simply saying, I
(24:58):
unequivocally lee, without question what Jimmy Haslam said is going
to happen here, all right, and making the owner stick
to his words. I guess so so an unusual statement there.
The AP is named Astro's MVP second baseman jose Al
Tove as their Male Athlete of the Year. And guys,
we have one bowl game going on right now. It
(25:20):
is the Independence Bowl, with Florida State leading Southern Miss
twenty three to six at the half seminals. Quarterback James
Blackman already has three touchdown passes today, but of course,
as a freshman, he's not yet in the conversation. Is
one of the NFL's top quarterback process. But there are
a couple of guys who are thank you very much, Frank.
(25:40):
By the way, Bucky, you go to a lot of
college football games, and you go to a lot of
ball games. Has never been a bowl game when you're like,
what am I doing here? But I like, why, why? Why?
Why am I here? Right? I should have just stayed home.
What what am I doing? Disclosure? A couple of years ago,
I went to gos just changed the name game, but
it was Orlando. I went to see North Carolina take
(26:03):
on Baylor. Baylor had lost all of their quarterbacks. They
didn't have a quarterback. They had uh a hodgepodge of
running backs and wide receivers. Basically playing a single wing quarterback.
They ran for seven hundred yards on my all the mind,
and even though I was there in a working capacity,
(26:23):
to see a team without a quarterback run the ball
at will was unbelievable. Seven hundred yards rush. Oh my goodness.
When when Baylor would run that, when they would throw
the ball and do whatever. The great thing about it
was they would only have like two wide receivers run routes.
(26:44):
There would be times where guys just wouldn't even do anything.
You know, it's funny because that's the offense that Lane
Kiffin is running down in Florida Atlantic and they are
wearing people out. He has a was it Kindle Browse
offensive coordinator that that offense is problematic. And when you
put some athletes out there and you have a quarterback
that can push the ball down the field, is the
electric just dynamic and so um to watch those guys
(27:07):
they call it play dead. If you're on the side
and they're not throwing to you, you just walk up
to the line. You can crawl, you can you can
you basically just take a nap um. It's interesting, it's
not it's not NFL football, but it definitely works. At
the collegiate level. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer and
for Doug Gottlieb on the Doug Gottlieb Show today and
we talked college football as we also transition to the NFL,
because it's been interesting and interesting week as we've heard
(27:30):
from quarterbacks who could make that leap from the collegiate
level to the NFL. First, we start with Josh Rosen,
who didn't play last night, ruined your Cactus Bowl plans
to go and watch u c l A and Kansas
stay at a game in that case State one, but
Josh Rosen didn't play, ruled out because of a concussion.
This was Josh Rosen earlier in the week about heading
to the National Football League. It was that I'm like
(27:53):
their guy. Hopefully they'll they'll go and get me. I'd
rather be a lower pick at the right team than
uh than hired the wrong team. And that is a
comment that some can take one way, some may take
another way, but you believe there's a lot of validity
into what Josh Rosen is saying. Well, yeah, Josh Rosen
(28:13):
is making absolute sense as a quarterback. Because as much
as we talk about quarterbacks and young quarterbacks needing time
to develop. We judge quarterbacks from the time they step
on the field. We make these blanket assessments on what
they are, based on how they perform, and if you
don't have a supporting cast, we don't care. Just think
last year about what we talked about with Jared Golf
(28:36):
and how we were ready to throw Jared Golf out
the league. He can't play, he's a bust. Why did
the Rams waste their picks to get a guy? We
see him in year two, We see him surrounded with
a better coach, better supporting cast. He can play. Josh
Rosen is smart enough to understand that it's not just
what he does. He has to have a village around
him to be successful. And so when you're drafted later
(28:59):
in the first round, you go to a better team
with some pieces in place. So yeah, selfishly, I'm sure
he wants to go to the best possible team that
allows him to do what he does well, but just
throw the ball all over the yard, and he has
to have some pass catchers and protection to do so.
When you think about the teams at the top Cleveland,
what do they have that makes you feel like a
young quarterback can come in there and thrive nothing. The
(29:21):
New York Giants, we have seen their offensive line struggle
mightily with Eli Manning back there. You think about some
of the other teams that are also sitting there. May
India goals to Denver Broncos. Do they have enough to
help you survive? So yeah, if I have an opportunity
to go from one to maybe four, and I got
the Denver Broncos with a defense and those things, I
look like a better quarterback. So it does make sense
(29:42):
in the long term to go to a team that
is better, even though you lose some draft position as
some initials. And here's the thing about the two teams
that you just mentioned with Cleveland and the Giants, and
we could use roles and you could take any quarterback
for Rosen's sake. There is a report that John Dorsey
is one of the gms saying that I don't want
anything to do with Rosen. I want to stay away
(30:04):
from him. And even if Cleveland, who does have the
number one pick, is interested, who was interested in Rosen
prior to Dorsey maybe coming aboard that is no longer
the case. But the Giants factor, we're bucky. I think
is another issue. When you have a receiver like Odell
Beckham Jr. Who demands the ball, you would think this
is a great opportunity for a young guy to have
one of the top pass catchers in the NFL. I
(30:26):
actually maybe this is the grinch or the the glass.
You're forced to get him the football. You aren't like
you are forced like if Odell Beckham Jr. Isn't getting
the football right away, you are. You are the one
who like takes all of the flats. Is that is
that a bad I think it's a tough spot for
a guy to spot, but it's it's the league like,
(30:48):
that's what it is. And and make no mistake, we
may or may not see it happen on TV, but
everyone that plays that position, the farther way you get
from the ball, the more dynamic the personality. When you
think about Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. And even
Julio Jones, all of those guys feel the same because
I'll tell you to you this way. If I'm playing
wide receiver and I'm not touching the ball, this is
(31:11):
nothing more than a cardio workout. Why am I out here?
I play wide receiver to test the ball and make play.
If I want to work out, I can go to
twenty four hour fitness, I can go to l A fitness,
I can do something else. But if I'm on the field,
I can't impact the game without the ball. I need
the ball, and I'm just going to make sure that
my quarterback understands I am out here to play football,
(31:32):
not to get another workout. The USC Trojans of Ohio
State coming up Friday in the Cotton Boll. Sam Donald
taking part in some media responsibilities. He's got a decision
like Josh Rosen, Sam Donald today on his NFL future.
You know, whenever I come out to go to the NFL,
I think I'd be honored to play for any team. Uh.
It's it's been a dream of mine for such a
(31:52):
long time to play in the NFL and any team
that would want to give me that opportunity to be
a part of the organization that me in the world
to me. Now, this is where this gets interesting because
Sam Donald is projected to be a first round pick
as well, and Bucky correct me if I'm wrong. I
am seeing more of Josh Rosen as being ahead of
Sam Donald. When the selection process unfolds. So what I've
(32:15):
been seeing more and more of that that Rosen would
be number one and Donald would be maybe maybe the
second quarterbacktors For the sake of this argument, what is
interesting for what I just mentioned earlier with John Dorsey
is there was also the comments that the report because
there weren't comments made by Sam Donald, and Sam Donald
spoke for himself in that spot, but there was a
report earlier this year that maybe Sam Donald wouldn't be
(32:36):
interested in going to Cleveland. Well, now, if all of
a sudden we hear that John Dorsey is the one
who wants to stay away from Josh Rosen and Cleveland
is sitting there at number one, does Sam Donald say, Okay, well,
if they're not gonna take Rosen number one, maybe I
would be the next guy and have a decision. There's
a lot going on with with with the the ins
and outs of the NFL draft and where you want
to go, and it just it seems to get bigger
(32:57):
and bigger with with more leaks and of of what
gms are saying and what players are saying. Now, Sam
Donald maybe in a spot where he says, well, Cleveland's
not gonna take Josh Rosen will probably take me. This
could affect my future as well. Yeah, there's a lot
to unwrap in that. I think a couple of things
that have happened in the last couple of days. What
we are seeing is the true personalities of Josh Rosen
(33:20):
and Sam Donald on display. And it's one of the
reasons why, despite Josh Rosen maybe being a superior talent
when it comes to playing the position, why more executives
and gms are kind of into Sam donald corner because
he is more of a guy's guy. He's more of
an every man when it comes to playing the position.
You can see him easily making the transition into all
(33:42):
thirty two rooms when it comes to being the leader
of the team. Whereas, and I've always said this, Josh
Rosen is an acquired taste. He's a intellectual. He's a
guy that's opinionated. He is going to say exactly what
he thinks, and for some coaches and executives that's going
to rub them wrong. If this report is true about
John Dorsy, I think it's a reflection of an old
(34:04):
school general manager not necessarily wanting his quarterback to have
that kind of opinion. To be able to voice those things,
and I really want to work with that. I think
the interesting thing when it comes to Cleveland, why would
anybody as a quarterback be excited about going to the
Cleveland Browns when you're seeing their recent track record with quarterbacks.
(34:28):
Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan. We've seen how they treated Deshaun Kaiser.
We've seen in previous years, Jenny man Zel flamed out
on his own, Brandon Whedon. The list goes on and
on and on for young quarterbacks not performing well within
the organization. I think it's a legitimate concern, regardless of
who the coach is, who the general manager is. I
(34:48):
just think it's one of those things that you have
to talk about. You not so crazy, Bucky, because I
think that there are markets where like when you if
you win in that market, just like it wouldn't like
when you brought a World Series to the Cubs, you know,
like Anthony Rizzolo and Chris Bryant and Jake Areata. Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
heroes forever. You've got that same thing in Cleveland, but
it is so toxic that nobody wants to touch it.
(35:10):
And and and there's a difference. I mean, you know,
theo Epstein goes into Chicago and kind of, you know,
shapes everything up. But if you would win a Super
Bowl in Cleveland, I mean it is your city for
you know, I mean, you know, once Lebron leaves, it's
definitely your city. That that's you know. But it's so
bad now nobody even wants to think. John Dorsey understands
that John Dorsey coming from green Bay. He was in
(35:31):
green Bay when I was playing there. It's a special city,
very similar to what Cleveland is. It has a tremendous
tradition and legacy. So if you are able to win
in Cleveland, yeah, you become legendary. And I think someone
has to want to embrace being the quarterback of a
team that has an esteem tradition and some of the
players that have played there. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan By.
(35:51):
Are are in for Doug Gottlieb on The Gottlieb Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Will in the NFL Hall
of Famer be making a return to his alma mater
as a coach? We'd answer that question next on Fox
Sports Radio Doug Gotliams Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's
Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan buy are in for Doug today.
Can always reach us on Twitter. I'm at Dan Buyer.
On Fox, you can get Bucky at Bucky Brooks. We
(36:14):
are in for Doug who was on the Herd on
for Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports One.
But just because Doug is it here doesn't mean we
don't do what Doug does. And it's time to play
a game. That game would be with our good friend,
our anchors. Yeah, alright, Frank, we got a little real news.
(36:35):
Excuse me, Ralph, I why don't I call you Frank? Ralph?
We've got real news or fake news, fake news that
is fake A lot of moving parts, Ralph Irvin giving
us the latest in h in game time. What happens
is Ralph gives us a story and then we have
to guess, Bucky and I have to guess it if
it's real news or fake news. So story number one,
(36:57):
story number one that would be known is reporting that
Willie Taggart might bring in a new defensive backs coach,
and that would be Dion Sanders. I would say, you
think that's real news? Are fake news? Fake news? Fake news? News? Ralph?
It is it is real news source with knowledge says
(37:22):
Sanders has serious interest. He has coached at the high
school level and of course has coached in the under
armour All American Game. Oh well, listen, if if Dion
leaves the NFL network, that means that Bucky Brooks can
you know, take more of a salary? And then how
about that the Prime Prime is gonna go back He's
gonna go back home. And Prime is on the sidelines
today as f s U takes on Southern Not only
(37:45):
is the other sideline, he's wearing a letterman's jacket. Would
you go back to the chapel Hill and wear a
Carolina letterman's jacket on the sidelines of the game. I
hate to tell you, but I have a tradition every
time I go to a North Carolina game, I have
to take a pitch you with the mascot, And so
there are a million pitches of me and Ramsey's on
(38:06):
the sideline. So I mean, I have the letter jacket,
but me and the mascot always close. Friend nice nice alright, Ralph,
what else it got? Well? This one is pretty notable actually,
because American Airlines took to Memphis hustle guards and kicked
them off the plane for stealing real news or fake news.
I'm gonna news real news, real news. Well, here's the
(38:28):
funny part. It was real news until it was shown
to be fake news. Little twist with Ralph because that
story came out yesterday today it is American Airlines apologizing
because two first class passengers gave blankets to these two players,
who then took them back to their seats, and the
airlines accused them of stealing the blankets and kicked them
(38:48):
off the flight. Those blankets are like a buck like
that that that that's like the most that they are.
I I don't And by the way, if you use
a blanket in an airplane for yourself, just keep it
because you have no idea. And what other journals there
would be. I don't know why in the world you
would you would want to they come in a little bag.
He's they come, but once it's exposed, I mean, heck,
(39:09):
there's a airborne is the whole like airborne is is
what would you want to say? A medication r a
bill based on the fact that everybody gets sick and airplanes?
All right, Ralph, what do we got next? Well, let's
go away from the world. Of sports for this one,
and that means we're going to our favorite place for news.
That would be the state of Florida, where a Florida
man punched an A t M because it didn't give
(39:31):
him all of his cash, and he was then arrested.
That's if that's in Florida, that's real news. That's real news.
Actually it is fake news. What actually happened. It gave
him too much cash and he committed five thousand dollars
worth of damage to the A t M in Cocoa Beach.
He was arrested earlier or last week. He said that
(39:52):
he didn't know what to do and he was in
a hurry to get to work, so he beat up
the machine. Wait, so he got they gave it, gave
him too much cash, correct, and he got mad at it,
so then he beat it up. Okay, yeah, that makes
a lot of sense. If you had too much cash
on an A t M, what would you try to
Would you just deposited it back in your account? Would
you take it in? If I was the guy who
(40:14):
had to go to work, I mean I'd have to
go inside the bank and tell him, you know, you
can't you can't leave, because then you're guilty. Yeah, yeah,
you have. You have to find a way to put
an envelope and take you back in there. I guess, thanks, Ralph.
Real news are fake news. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer.
We are in for Doug Gottlieb here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Coming up next? Will there be a changing
(40:35):
quarterback for an NFL playoff team? Will tell you next.
We are definitely getting into the Bowls spirit. His college
football rolls on, and of course Week seventeen in the
National Football League provides a lot of storylines and some
interesting storylines that you don't necessarily get in the first
sixteen weeks of the season, one of which in Kansas
City the Chiefs. They're in the postseason their a f
(40:55):
C West champs. However, the Chiefs have an opportunity to
go to den her and get a look at their
first round pick for the first time this season. Patrick
Mahomes is getting the start for Kansas City. As Alex
Smith will rest, there was a point, I don't know,
four or five weeks ago, Bucky, where maybe we thought
we would actually see Patrick Mahomes in a game. Andy
(41:15):
Reid stuck with Alex Smith during a bit of a
dip that the Chiefs had in the regular season. Now
the division champs and we will get our first look
at Patrick Mahomes in a relief effort really, with no
opportunity to threaten Alex Smith for the starting job as
we enter the playoffs. Yeah, I think this is a
great opportunity for the Kanna City Chiefs. I think it
was ridiculous, like four or five weeks ago we were
(41:36):
talking about bench and Alex Smith, when Alex Smith was
playing pretty well and the issues that were bothering the
Kanna c Chiefs had more to do with the offensive
line and Kareem Hunt more so than the quarterback. But
now we get an opportunity to see what everyone in
Chiefs Kingdom wants to see, and that's Patrick Mahomes have
an opportunity to start and be the QB one for
the Chiefs. When you watch Patrick Mahomes over the preseason,
(41:58):
he was electric. He was spectacular. He's a big arm
gun slinger who has a knack for making these wild plays.
He is fantastic as an improvisational playmaker. Completed six of
his passes four to zero touchdown interception ratio, had a
one oh nine point three passer rating. On the surface,
(42:18):
those numbers are remarkable. There everything that you want to
see from a top pick. The trick will be can
he be a discipline enough pocket passer to really move
the chains in a consistent fashion? Can he play when
people fully game planning for the Chiefs and that offense?
And also what would this offense look like with him?
(42:38):
With that? With Alex Smith, you saw some of the
r P O S round pass option role. She saw
a lot of bubble screens. But what people wanted to
see was more vertical playmaking. Let's see if Patrick Mahomes
can give them more of a vertical threat at the
quarterback position. We know about Tyreek Hill, he we know
about Travis Kelsey. What I also think was an issue
with the Chiefs. Remember they lost Chris Conling to the
(43:01):
achilles injury. Albert Wilson was missing some time as well.
So not only did you have the running game of
the offensive line have issues. I also thought that the
Chiefs are trying to find guys just to throw the
ball to, uh, you know, on the outside, and and
so there could have been some issues with Alex Smith there.
But you've watched Pat Mahomes, He's watched him at Texas Tech.
You mentioned how well he played in the preseason. What
(43:23):
is the most intriguing aspect? Is it just the arm
strength in general? Is is that just basically what we
want to see from Patrick Mahomes or is there more
to the rookie from Texas Tech? Well, I think I
think there're two ways to to kind of determine what
we want to see. We as fans want to see
the spectacular playmaking ability. We want to see the big arm.
We want to see the things that excite us, almost
(43:46):
from a fantasy perspective, what his coaches want to see.
Canny managed the game, Canny play connected US football. Is
he patient enough to take the check now or will
he be prone to make some of the plays that
he made a Texas Tech where he'll leave the pocket,
He'll throw uh laid across the middle for across his body,
his feet are and said, he's not throwing on a
(44:07):
consistent or stable platform, and some of those throws that
he will make will be high risk, probably interception balls
in the National Football League? Can he contain himself that
way to play smart football? Say everything that you want
to say about Alex Smith. Alex Smith play winning football
at the position for the Kansas City Chiefs. Low turnovers,
(44:28):
keeps him consistently in a good play makes the plays
that are dear. Could he be a little more risky?
Can he take more risk at a position? Absolutely? But
what Alex Smith won't do is he typically won't lose
the game for you. We have to see how can
Patrick Mahomes told that line where he's making these plays
that he's always made as an improvisational player, but he
(44:52):
doesn't turn the ball over and put his team in
harms way. Is there anything that can happen in Week
seventeen that could change the Chief's future plans? Or is it?
I mean it is? This? Is everything just set for
Patrick Mahomes to take over this team? Is there anything
that is there anything that could be different throughout the playoffs?
If the Chiefs going to win the Super Bowlers? Is
(45:12):
this just gonna end up with Patrick Mahomes starting Week
one to next year? At some point, Patrick Mahomes is
going to be the starter. I think Andy Reading and
staff have to get together and figure out is it
better to have another year with Alex Smith at a
pretty modest contract rate. I think you make anywhere from
seventeen to eighteen million UM in terms of salary cap
compensation UM, which is really a mid level deal that's
(45:34):
like a top fifteen deal when it comes to it.
Or are you ready to hand the keys the keys
to the car to Patrick Mahomes. I think you can
get a really good glimpse at how he performs over
these next four quarters to determine if you think you
can get them ready to be the starter in week one,
if they feel like they can get them ready to
be the start in week one while also upgrading the team.
(45:57):
I think Patrick Mahomes would be the Kancie the Chiefs
starting quarterback when they keep off team. There are playoff implications.
Four weeks seventeen earlier on the show, Frank Swabiya, who
Sports joined us and taking into consideration those playoff implications,
Frank is more excited about seeing Patrick Mahomes than anything else.
Oh my goodness, I'm excited for this. That immediately became
(46:19):
like the game I want to see. I mean other
you know the games that they have playoff implications. I'm
excited to see this kid. I was excited to see
what he did in a preseason and yeah, it was
a lot of you know, improvisational stuff, and he wasn't
exactly you know, Philip Rivers in the pocket or anything,
but he was exciting. He's had these unbelievable physical tools
(46:39):
and he gets a tough test. I This Denver defense
maybe wasn't isn't what it was last year, but it's
still good. It's still playing hard, and I think it's
a very good test for the chief They can they
can still look they're gonna have a tough decision this offseason.
Maybe not fa tough. Who knows, Maybe they've already decided
we're moving on from Alex We can say, if I
think it's about twelve million on the cap we have
(47:00):
Mahomes were going with him, So maybe they made that
decision already. But if there's any doubt, to get a
chance to look at Mahomes in a regular season game
against a tough defense on the road, I think it's
a great barometer that at least the Chiefs to know, hey,
here's what we got going in the next year. Now
we can make a decision. Yeah, he's gonna be haavy
to go against the the likes of of a Von
Miller and Chris Harris and keep to leave. And even
(47:22):
though Denver's out of it, you still have those guys there.
And Denverse problems this year have been on offense. The defense.
It may not have been there all sixteen games or
fifteen games so far, Bucky, but Patrick Mahomes is at
least going to see a tough defense in a tough
environment coming up under your seat. Yeah. But you know,
on the other side, it's also compelling because we get
a chance to see Paxton Lynch and so we'll see
(47:44):
two young quarterbacks, two quarterbacks they were drafted to be
the face of their respective franchises going forward. Uh, two
guys that have an opportunity to really determine what the
future of the quarterback position will be for their franchises. Paston,
Lynch hasn't played much. He's been heard he's coming off
that injury, but this is an audition for him because
one way or the other, the Denver Broncos have to
(48:05):
fix the quarterback position. How Packed and Lynch plays will
go a long way in determining whether they go in
the draft and find that or if they find a
veteran and free agency for Pat Mahomes This is a
great test, great defense, great pass for great coverage. We
will see how he reacts playing against the A level defense.
Gives us a nice little insight on what he could
be next year. Denver's offseason is so intriguing as well.
(48:28):
And you mentioned the quarterbacks. I'm not afraid to say it.
I thought Trevor Simeon was their best quarterback that they had. Now,
that's Trevor Simeon to me, would be a guy that
let's say it's throws a game. All right, pretty good,
we can deal with that three, all right. You know,
(48:51):
I don't know if he's a starting quarterback. It's the
other four that you're like, oh my goodness, what in
the world are you doing? And I felt that Trevor Simeon,
I felt a stronger arm the brock Osweiler. And when
you bringing Paxton Lynch Bucky, there's no the risk that
Denver took with him late first round pick. It wasn't
like he was a top five or a top ten guy.
(49:11):
It's now two years into the system where he then
can't stay healthy. And I don't care. That's not an
excuse if you're trying to find the future quarterback and
when he did finally play this year, I believe it
was in Oakland. There there, we was. There just wasn't
much there for me to to believe if I'm the
Denver Broncos, that Paxton Lynch is our guy and deserves
(49:32):
to be in the system another year. I mean brock Oswidler,
for as much as we want to rip Osweiler, and
how he played, in my mind, actually looked better than
Paxton Lynch. And while Ostwiler can't throw a deep ball
on a consistent basis, at least he seemed to be
more productive than what Paxton Lynch has done in his
limited opportunities. Yeah, Paxton this year nine for fourteen forty
(49:53):
one yards uh, no touchdown, has had an interception and
that was in almost like a half of play a
inasto Oakland Raiders. I think the big thing for Paxton Lynch,
what you want to see is does he have a
mastery of the offense. Does he understand where he's supposed
to go with the ball? Can you find the checkdown
or the second and third option within a route concept?
What's his leadership skills? Like, how did you respond to
(50:15):
the adversity that he certainly will face? In this game
against Kansas City, they are really trying to make a
determination on whether this guy deserves to be in their
future plans or if they need to jump out and
go big on a quarterback no matter who's available at
one of those top four picks. You know, Denver, for
I want to say they lucked out, that the Texans
(50:37):
wanted to give Brock cost while or more money than
what they were willing to give him when Rocket free
agency for the first time when he left Denver. But
John Elway is now the heat has started to turn up,
and it started with the quarterbacks, but it has now
turned out into the coaching staff and to what vance
Joseph has done fair or unfair. Denver makes an offensive
coordinator change in mid season with Mike McCoy ending losing
(51:00):
his job, but the heat keeps on turning up. Of Okay,
what is John Elway really done? What is John Elway
really done now in his time with the Denver Broncos.
I think it's a little crazy because I don't think
Peyton Manning goes there without John Elway being there. I
think that that Peyton would have gone elsewhere if it
wasn't for always influence but I do think that Elway
will feel some pressure to do something this offseason. And
(51:21):
I don't think any of the three quarterbacks that Denver
has in the uniform right now will be there next year.
I I just I think that Denver ends up finding
a way moving on, whether it be Kirk Cousins or
someone else. But I don't think any of the three.
Um If Paxson Lynch is there in the backup role
because of of of of his contract and being a rookie,
that's fine. But I think they look for a new
starting quarterback in yeah, think you have to look for
(51:42):
a new starting quarterback. They need to figure out a
way to get it right. And uh. For most of
these teams, and I will even lump into Cleveland Browns,
I think their quarterback answers are more in the veteran
free agent market more so than the draft, because they
need someone that can be a right now player, a
guy that can come off the streets and find a
way to get this team going, get this offense going
and thrive. I think the big thing with John Elway,
(52:04):
and I know that you know he's kind of been
given a hall pass for a few years, but now
it's time. Now it's time for him to show if
he can cut his shops as an evaluate and make
sure that he puts the right personnel there. They try
to do unorthodox thing by having quarterbacks who weren't necessarily established.
One of those guys take over and the back fright
on them. Now they need to go and get a
(52:25):
legitimate quarterback, a guy that can really uplift the team
and the supporting cast us around him and get this
team into the winners circle. This team lost more games
than anyone expected for them to finish with the top
five pick. I think that is ridiculous based on the
amount of talent that they have on both sides of
the ball. John Elway and his staff they gotta get
this right. And they even tried to address their offensive
(52:47):
line issues in the offseason and and drafting Garrett Bowls
and Ronald Leary came over from Dallas. Just has been
an atrocious season for the Denver Broncos. He's Bucky Brooks,
I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Duck Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio coming up next. Sure, there may be
a question if fans Joseph will have a job, But
would you want the Denver Broncos coaching job. We talked
(53:07):
about it next year on Fox Sports Radio. So the
Doug Gotlaps show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Bucky Brooks.
I'm Dan Buyers. We are in for Doug today. Glad
to have you with us. You can always reach us
on Twitter. I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. You can
get Bucky at Bucky Brooks. And you guys have your
podcast of course, Bucky played in the NFL and works
for the NFL network. How many podcasts do you guys do?
(53:28):
Three a week? You and Daniel Jeremiah Dan jeremind I
have the Move the Sticks podcast. We do it three
times a week Sunday night, Tuesday and Thursday. Thursday is
a live streaming show. Lots of NFL talk, but as
we flipped the calendar, we were transitioning into more NFL
Draft talks. So you gotta get your conversation there. You
can find them but Move the Sticks at NFL dot Com,
(53:49):
also on YouTube. It's interesting with the Bowl games that
we've got now, there's such a question of do star
players play, do star players not play? And I looked
at it. I've looked it just from the school preference
and I'll just say this because we see Josh Rosen
last night not play against Kansas State. I felt this
(54:10):
way with Christian McCaffrey, and I felt this way with
Leonard Fournette last year when they sat out, specifically with
running backs Bucky it does more for a school to
have Christian McCaffrey and Leonard four Nette do well in
the NFL than it would be for them to do
well in that specific bowl game, whether it be a
Sun Bowl, Because I think what you can say is, hey,
Christian McCaffrey's a Pro Bowl running back for the Carolina Panthers,
(54:33):
and Leonard Fournette, say, all Pro running back for the
Jacksonville Jaguars. They went to l s U, they went
to Stanford, and you could say, look at the guys,
look at the guys that we have brought in that
have gone on to great success in the NFL. If
you're telling a recruit, you're not saying, look what Christian
McCaffrey did in the Sun Bowl against you know, North Carolina,
you aren't saying those things. Actually think it's better in
the long term for these programs too to have their
(54:54):
players sit out if it's going to be any risk
to what they could do in the NFL. I think
what you're seeing players are realizing their power. Players are
beginning to make business decisions based on the circumstances and
situations that they currently are in. UM I think if
you're a top prospect and you have the opportunity to
play in a big time bowl game, I think you
absolutely play. And when I mean a big time bowl game,
(55:16):
your team is in contention for the national title and
the and the playoff. You get a chance to play
in the Rose Bowl, the Sugar one of those storied
bowls that has a lot of tradition, Cotton Bowl, the like, Yeah,
you participated. But if you're in playing and one of
those bowls, and I don't want to call them meaningless
because they do provide a lot of players with great
opportunities to show off their skills. But if you're a
(55:37):
top prospect, the guy that's going in the first maybe
the second round, and you know that what you do
in this bowl game doesn't help you, I think more
and more guys are realizing that, you know what, it's
not worth it. I'm gonna go ahead and get a
jump start on my training, go ahead and put myself
in the best position to be drafted as high as
I can. Because when you become a professional, you now
(55:59):
are the sea EEO of your own company. I think
you have to treat business assess and I think that's
what you're seeing more college kids realized that when they're
on the way out, there's gonna be some business decisions
made by NFL teams coming up next week, as we
could see some coaches get their walking papers and lose
their job. That means other coaches then we'll move in
(56:19):
and likely take those jobs. So for this time at
the Doug Gottleib Show, we are going to play a
game called to coach or not to coach? And this
is an opportunity where I am going to give Bucky
Brooks a team that where that coach could be gone
at the end of the season. And I want to know, Bucky,
is this a job that you would want to coach
(56:40):
or a job that you would not want to take
and not want to coach. So we've got I don't
know ten to twelve teams that could be having coaching decisions.
Let's start out with the Denver Broncos because we were
just talking about their quarterback situation if Denver moved on
from Vance Joseph. Is this a job you would want
to take to coach or not to coach? I would
(57:01):
pass on this job. And I would pass on this
job because of the John Alway factor. John Elway is
always going to, however over the franchise. John Elway in
essence is acting as a head coach emeritus. And so
if I have an opportunity to take a job, I'm
gonna take a job where I don't have that guy
looking over my shoulder. All the decisions and mistakes that
are made. The blame always falls to the head coach,
(57:22):
but somehow he escapes. Yeah, I'll trying to find a
better situation for myself. Okay, Well, let's go from one
horse to another. The Indianapolis Colts likely to move on
from Chuck Bagano Andrew Luck missed the entire season with
his shoulder issue. Would you want to coach or not
coach the Indianapolis Colts. I would take the Indianapolis coach job. Man,
I'm taking that blind knowing that I don't know what
(57:44):
Andrew Luck is going to be when it returns. But
let's gamble on the fact that he's going to come
back to something close to what we saw when he
was at his best. Have a quarterback in place, I
need to upgrade the weapons around him, namely a running
back in the offensive line. And before I can even
do that, I gotta fix the defense. For so long,
this is a team that mismanaged their opportunity when Andrew
(58:05):
Luck was on their rookie deal, and it was a
low deal. There was a team friendly deal. They should
have committed the resources and assets to building up their defense.
They didn't. Now you've paid the quarterback, you can't acquire
the same level talent. This is a long rebuild, but
I'm in it for the long call. But I gotta
focus on my episode getting the defense right. We're not
gonna compare everything to John Elway, but you have more
(58:26):
confidence in Chris Ballard and what the coach GM is
doing than maybe what they're doing in Denver. Bell has
a nice reputation for being an astute personnel man. We
have to wait and see what his drafts look like,
but at some point they have to upgrade the talent
around Andrew Luck, namely on the defense. You gotta hit
on a bunch of picks, and you gotta hit on
a very very high rate. That's something that most of
(58:48):
the time in scott And we can't do. But we'll
see if Chris Baally can get it done. Let's go
a few hours down the road to the great city
of Cincinnati. Marvin Lewis could be moving on to coach
or not coach the Cincinnati A goals Bucky Brooks, is
that a job you would take or not love his job?
I love his job because there's there's a lot of
talent in Cincinnati. I think you have to realize the
(59:08):
Cincinnati Beings when the five straight playoff appearances, um, they
didn't win a playoff game, But the reason they were
able to go is because they were able to really
stockpile a lot of picks um during the draft. The
guys that they picked, UM, they kind of subscribed to
the Warren Buffet model of investing brand name players. They
go by the guys who have the highest grades and
some of those national scouting services. They believe it and
(59:29):
those guys have turned out even though there may be
some character flaws or risk with those guys. They always
bank on talent. So from a talent perspective, this rosters
as talented as they come. You just have to figure
out a way to get Andy Dalton right. How can
you make them comfortable? Can you put him in the offense?
Is very similar to what he did at TCU, very
similar to what he did with Hugh Jackson. If you can,
(59:50):
they can go right back to the playoffs. All right.
Now that you're the coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and
you mentioned Andy Dalton, would you start Andy Dalton or
would you want to keep a J. McCarron around to
be your starting quarterback? Kind of a bonus question. That
is a bonus question. Um. I think with Andy Daunt,
I think he's done enough to continue to be the starter.
I do like a J. McCarron. I was a big
fan of Ajia McCarron when he came out of Alabama.
(01:00:11):
I was one of the few that believed that he
should have been a first round pick because I think
he never got enough credit for what he brings to
the table. But in this situation, I would go with
Andy Dalton over a J. Mccarroon. I think a J.
McCarron can find a nice little job somewhere. We can
be a starting quarterback. All right, from Cincinnati, we go
to the windy city of Chicago, where the Chicago Bears
(01:00:32):
could be moving on from John Fox. Mitchell Drabinsky is
their quarterback, went to Bucky Brooks's alma mater. I don't
know if that's gonna play a part. But does the
Bears job a job you want to take or not take?
I mean, ideally, there isn't a bad job in the league,
but I think I might there are some there are
I might. I might pass on this job. I may
pass on this job because they got a lot of
work to do. I I don't have a receiver at all.
(01:00:55):
I do have a running back in Jordan, how when
I got a little a little running back into Cohen.
I like the Tide and Adam seen Is is pretty decent,
but I'm probably gonna lose my decordinating Vic Fangio. The
defense is being here to miss this. Some pieces there,
but I don't know if I want to work this hard.
I thought the Bears were upfront at least with a
half pieces both on the offensive line and defensive line
(01:01:15):
to make this something that you could get an eight
and eight season in twenty years, you may be able to.
I think a good coach can kind of figure out
a way to play to the strength of the quarterback
that is available. Um, the trick is do they have
enough talent to match up? And I know that takes
some time, but if we're talking about right now being
able to get on the field and get some wins, yeah,
I'm gonna look for a better program. All right, let
(01:01:36):
me ask you about this one. UM. I don't know
if it's a better program, but there are looking for
a new a coach because they've already fired the one
that started the season, the New York Giants moving on
from Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnola and other interimed coach. Is
the New York Giants job a job you would want
to take? I would. I would take the New York
Giants job because it's a model franchise. Their owners have
(01:01:56):
shown tremendous patients over the course of time. This is
a different situation with being McAdoo, but typically they're very
patient with the coach. They a lot of coach to
put his plan in place. When I look at the
Giants and reason it's attractive, I got a star in
Odell Beckham Jr. Um, I have another playmaker and Sterling
Shepherd defensively. There are a number of players that can
play defensively. I believe with a coaching change at coordinator,
(01:02:18):
they can play a little better. I like what they
have and I know I have to make a tough
decision on Eli Manning, but I would quickly take the
job and tell Eli Manning that I appreciate your service.
I appreciate you to two wins. But what we're gonna
do is, when you see the secretary on the way out,
we have a nice parting gift. We're gonna move on
and find us a new franchise quarterback East Bucky Brooks.
I'm Dan Buyer. We got through five teams, we got
(01:02:40):
a few more to get to, and we'll tell you
how appealing of a job it would be in one
of the bays. Okay, yeah, it's a little little teased there.
But Ralph Irvin joins us now to give us the
latest here on the Doug Gottlieb Show of what's happening
not only in college football, but also in the NFL. Hey, Ralph, hello, gentlemen,
and we will start with college football. The independence bull
(01:03:02):
going on in Shreveport, Louisiana right now, eleven to play
in the fourth quarter. Florida State has a thirty nine
thirteen lead over Southern miss in that game. And you
were just talking about the New York Giants, Well, they
just made some news this hour as well. They made
a move with Eli Apple. He'd already been called a
cancer by teammate Landon Dolovhant Donovans and the Giants have
(01:03:27):
suspended Eli Apple for this week's game against Washington for
quote a pattern of behavior that is conduct detrimental to
the team end quote. So he made some filthy comments
to the media today talking about Landon Collins, and I
think that might have been the straw that broke the
camel's back. He is suspended, or he was so much
of a cancer that Landed Donovan also called him a cancer. Indeed,
(01:03:51):
I believe Landon Donovan blamed him for the US not
making the world very good, very good. Well he got
Kansas City is gonna start Patrick Mahomes at quarterback when
they play Denver. The Broncos are going to counter with
Paxton Lynch. And we now know that James Harrison was
cut by Pittsburgh signed tuesday with New England. Well, today
Steelers players got a chance to respond, here's Marquise Pouncy
(01:04:14):
small stuff like that so many different times that if
you didn't want to Musage to come out and say,
I'll make a look like a team like Zason Lets
On The Sporting News, David Steele does point out, though,
that Pittsburgh has cut Harrison five times over the years.
(01:04:35):
This time he chose to move on good. A little
war of words between Pouncey and James Harrison. I I
don't want I don't want to have any wars with
James Harrison. I am good. I would be I would
be okay with whatever, and I would just let sleeping
dogs lie. Thanks Ralph for the latest. James Harrison one
of the last guys I would ever want to get
on the bad side of. He has Bucky Brooks. I'm
(01:04:57):
Dan Buyer. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox It's Radio. We were in the midst of to
coach or not coach, and now you said you would
take the Giants job. Isn't even more appealing that Eli
Apple has been suspended? How about this? Eli Apple gets
suspended one of the it's his teammate who calls him
a cancer. Maybe there's some truth to it. Yeah, that's
true to it. Absolutely. Don't you think that Landed Colline
(01:05:20):
should have called him a rotten apple? That would have
been that would have been better. That would that would
have been better. But I do think it's interesting that
they decided to suspend him today after all of the
stuff that came out. Lynda Collins Um made him is
trying to apologize for his words, but his words came
(01:05:42):
from a very truthful place. He was saying that the
young guy hasn't messed up. I think they finally recognized
that they needed to sit Eli Apple straight or they're
gonna lose him. He's never gonna be a guy that
can contribute to the squad. What would have really been
fun is that the Giants just released a statement saying
that we've suspended Eli and then that everyone. Do you
think it was Eli Manning? All right, let's move on
to coach or not coach round number two. I mentioned
(01:06:05):
we were going to the bay. How about the San
Francisco Bay. Yes, the Oakland Raiders now looks like Jack
del Rio is going to be back next year, but
there could be other coaching changes. If the Raiders job
was available, Bucky, would you want to take this gig
with the silver and black. Yeah, I would take the gear.
I think it's a nice gig. I think it's an
opportunity to bring it back. You have a quarterback in place,
(01:06:25):
even though he hasn't played well. Derek Carr is a
guy that can be a top ten quarterback. You have
receivers in Michael Crabtrey and a Marie Cooper offensive line.
It's probably one of the top ten offensive lines in football.
Last year we were say it's probably one of the
top two. Defensively, you still gotta fix it, but you
gotta play maker in Khalil mac that you can build around. Uh.
You have some other pieces that are intriguing. Yeah, I
would take this job. I think this is a team
(01:06:47):
that should be a perennial playoff team. They just got
wayward this year for whatever reason. I don't think it's
a hard fix to get them back on track. We've
given Bucky six jobs so far. He's taken four of
them and passed on to Bears and Broncos said thanks,
but no thanks. What about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Is
dirt Cutter could be getting his walking papers next week?
Oh yeah, I'm gonna jump into this job. Fully. I'm
(01:07:08):
excited about this job. This is a job where offensively
we have all the weapons. I would tell Derek dirt
Cutter to take Doug Morton with him on his way out.
I need a running back. I would like someone that
I could depend on. That is what really is the messing,
missing ingredient for this team to running game needs to
improve defensively, I need a pass rusher. But I got
Gerald McCoy. I got some young guys and Verna hard
(01:07:29):
Rays and some of the other young guys that Dave
drafted of late. This team should be better there. Underachiever.
I just think we need to straighten out some things
on the staff and we get this team going in
the right direction. Okay, I got four more teams left.
Let's go with the Tennessee Titans. They're in the battle
for a playoff birth they can actually get one this
weekend if they can take down the Jacksonville Jaguars. Would
you want the job with the Tennessee Titans if Mike
(01:07:51):
Malarkey is let go. It's a nice job. But here's
where I'm undecided. Do I have to keep the quarterback?
Do I have to keep the quarterback that we've seen.
You have to Marcus Mariota, you would move on from
Marcus mari I'm just asking if it is a mandatory,
because right now, to Marcus Mariyoda, mandatory that you have
(01:08:11):
to keep him. Okay, I just need to talk to
Marcus because I need Marcus to come back. I need
Marcus to come back, Marcus from Boomerang to come back.
I need I need him to come back. I need
him to be that guy. He's struggling right now. And
to Marcus Mariyodada, we're seeing as de Marcus Mariyoda, they
can't move. I need the guy that is mobile because
without his legs, he's not as effective. And I think
we have to build an offense that is a little different,
(01:08:33):
and most circumstances, I would say yes to the dress
on this one, I'm gonna keep walking back. You know,
the the the dirty secret when Chip Kelly was at
Oregon was they ran the ball so well and they
were so dangerous that guys like Jeff Mail and other
wide receivers there wouldn't be defenders within ten yards of him,
and so Marcus Mariota didn't have to be as accurate
(01:08:55):
and really, I think in any of the quarterbacks that
played in the system, whether it be Jeraldmiam solely or
they were so wide open because teams did not know
how to react to their speed of getting to the line,
and also dealing with how good the running game was,
that these receivers would just be completely wide open when
they would end up playing against mean this game certainly
helped him out, but what you're seeing right now is
(01:09:17):
a bit of regression. There's a lot of things. There
are a lot of things that you have to do
to make sure that you help Mark Mariota get open receivers.
He can be a really good player, but he's taking
a step back. So if you give me my choices
and I could survey the landscape, I think there's some
other places that I would go before I went to Tennessee. Okay,
so we're gonna just we're gonna give that. We're gonna
give that a half. What about the Cleveland Browns? What
(01:09:37):
would you Hugh Jackson says, Jimmy, that's automatically, I'm good.
I'm good. I'm good on that. Jackson says that he
don't look good at Orange. I don't look good in
orangin brown. I don't know what what am I gonna
wear on the sideline? Oh God, what am I gonna
wear on the sideline? I'm I'm good on that. No,
no orangine brown for me. I love the tradition and
and all of that. When I was a kid, I
(01:09:58):
used to love Ernest Binder, kid Been Mack and all
of those things. I like the dog Pound. I have
a tough time getting past the colors, and in fact
that we haven't won in almost two years. I didn't
even get to the ounds in Cleveland Browns, and Bucky
was already passing on the job all right to others.
Bruce Arians shot down rumors or reports that he was
going to step aside after this season, calling it fake news. Again.
(01:10:20):
I'll believe it when I see it if he's on
the sidelines. But if Bruce Arians does step away or
the Cardinals make a change, is the Cardinals job the
job you would want? This is a tough one because
I like to wear the in Phoenix. I like the
weathering things. I like Scott Steele, Um, I like Lara
Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson and David Johnson. And remember, you're
(01:10:42):
gonna be in Glendale for you know, a good portion
of that. Okay, Okay, that's nothing. I don't have a quarterback.
Carson Palmer is probably done. I got blank ever looking
at me every day, and then I have Drew Stanton. Gosh,
it's hard to win games like that. That offensive line,
you know, I think maybe as a vacation spot. But
(01:11:04):
I'm gonna kee. I'm gonna keep on moving, keep moving on.
I'm gonna keep on moving. See you later. I'm taking ten.
Were going straight to l A. There's no jobs in
l A but the final one A figure it will
end with the bang. If the Green Bay Packers shockingly
made a move, Oh let me have this, this is
(01:11:25):
the one of them all, that would be that would
be the shocking. How long would the line be for
people to get Mike McCarthy to be their head coach?
Would that be a longline? Okay, because he's won a
lot of games. But the reason this job would be
the most trapic You got number twelve. Yes, arguably the
best quarterback in football. He is the best deodorant in
the game. He makes everything right. I mean, we've seen
(01:11:46):
how they stink it up when he is not there. Man,
you bring number twelve back. They look like a viable contender.
You give me that job because he's always gonna put
us in a position where we have a chance to
be in the winters. If you were named Packers head coach,
would you wear an errand RS jersey in your introduction?
That can't can't. There's something about having another man's name
(01:12:07):
on my back. I can't fully endorse what's true, but
I do like it. Maybe I could put like a
little lapel pick number twelve on. Maybe that is how
we get down There is also there's something about wearing
the jersey too of a player who I think is
younger than you. That that's always been the rule of thumb,
Like if you're older than that player, you shouldn't wear
(01:12:27):
their jersey. The rowback jerseys for guys like me are fine.
I'll rock a Steve Largent jersey, you know, every single
day of the week. But I can't go out there
and check out my Doug Baldwin jersey. It's not going
to happen. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer. This is
the Doug Gottlieb Show. And that has been to coach
or not to coach. You can always reach us on Twitter. Oh,
by the way, million Dollar Man says, one Apple can
(01:12:49):
spoil a bunch as we continue with the Eli Apple
puns as he got suspended today by the New York Giants.
This is the Dug Gottlieb Show. Get Bucky on Twitter
at Bucky Brooks, you can reach me, just like Million
Dollar Man did at Dan Buyer on Fox. The Patriots
or the Browns. Okay, maybe two ends of the spectrum.
Which team is the new Are the New York Giants
closer to being the New York Giants we would think
(01:13:11):
record wise, but maybe are they closer to the New
England Patriots? Well you'll find out next year. On Fox
Sports Radio, Doug gotlib Show at Fox Sports Radio. He's
Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer. Independence Ball is almost a
thing of the past. Florida State which we didn't even
know if they were gonna be, you know, eligible for
this Bowl game taking at the Southern miss thirteen, about
(01:13:33):
six minutes to go in the game, one of four
Bowl games on this December. Love to hear your feedback.
I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. You can get Bucky
at Bucky Brooks. What's more exciting to you these the
bowl games as you transition now into preparing for the
NFL draft, or is it a week seventeen where it's
(01:13:54):
still the NFL but there may not be a lot
to play for for certain teams right now. And be honest,
I'm more excited of the college bowl games. Um. And
I'm excited about the bowl games because, UM, in the
scouting world, you want to see guys play in big
stage games. What we're about to see coming up over
the weekend, We're gonna see some big stage games with
some big star players that have some major implications on
(01:14:15):
their draft status. Seeing Sam Donald play against Ohio State,
How's he gonna play against the team that is loaded
with NFL players on that defense? Is it too big
for him? Does he get spookeed? Does he make plays?
Is he the best guy on the field, or does
he shrink? Baker Mayfield against Georgia in the Rolls Bowl,
everyone talks about Baker Mayfield being a smaller guy. Canny
(01:14:36):
find passing lanes. Canny delivered. Because I'm gonna be honest
with you, a lot of his production in the Big Twelve.
The Big twelve doesn't play great defense, let's see if
he can shred an SEC defense that can put another
feather in his cap as the Heisman Trophy winner. And
then Clemson in Alabama. You're talking about two teams that
are built like NFL squads to college football heavyweights going
(01:14:58):
at it, how to the star players performing those games.
So for me, the next week or so watching college
games will tell me a lot about what gays can
do at the next level. But the Baker Mayfield point
is interesting because I felt with that conference, when we
felt that he became the front runner, when se Kwon
Barkley kind of dropped off and Baker Mayfield seemed to
(01:15:19):
take control of the race. They may they could have
lost another big twelve game after they lost to Iowa State.
They may have, but there was no way that he
was only gonna throw for a hundred and thirty yards.
So like the numbers were going to be there, it
may have been three and fifty yards and four interceptions,
but there was nothing in that conference that was going
to stop him from having an off game or a
bad game that would prevent him from winning the uh
(01:15:41):
the Heisman Trophy. No, nothing like that. And not to
necessarily pick on these guys or whatever. But like, let's
just pull up Mason Rudolph's numbers. What did Mason Rudolph
do at Oklahoma State? And so I pull up his
numbers here, thirty five touchdowns, nine interceptions in the Big Twelve.
I understand that Baker Mayfield is well deserving to winning
(01:16:04):
the Heisman Trophy. He did have an outstanding game against
Ohio State that will kind of silence some of the
questions that Scows had. But let's be honest and real
about the Big Twelve. I think they're owing to win
the bowl season. Do they really play defense? They're one
in two because case they beat U C l A.
Do they play defense? Did they play good enough defense
for us to really know what those guys are? I
(01:16:25):
think we'll have a truer feel for what Baker Mayfield
is when we see him against Georgia and if they
advanced versus Clemson or Alabama, and the Rose Bowls should
be a dandy, that's for sure. The great Rose Bowl
tradition on January one that you'll see in passaity another
than the night cap Clemson against Alabama. A lot of
NFL talent there. Absolutely, he's Bucky Brooks I'm Dan Buyer.
(01:16:48):
This is a Fox Sports radio at the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Some news in the NFL today is the New York
Giants have suspended cornerback Eli Apple for what they consider
conduct detremental to the team, Bucky. This is after Landing
Collins came out on the radio and said that Eli
Manning or excuse me, Eli Apple was a cancer to
the team. Didn't specifically say Eli Apple, but named everybody
(01:17:11):
else who we liked, and then left Eli Apple and
called him a first round cancer. So he kind of
knew who he was talking about. Wait, wait to cover
it up. I'm never telling Landing Collins any secrets, but
the fact is his Landing Collins calls him a cancer,
does apologize, but it's Eli Apple getting the one game ban.
His twenty seventeen season is over a long time coming.
He didn't necessarily play nice in the sandbox. He's a
(01:17:31):
guy that didn't take coaching will um. When the coaches
would try and correct him, reports would tell you that
he balked at that, he didn't like that, he didn't
like being corrected. He felt like he kind of knew
at all. Then when you go out on the field
and you watch him play, he's a guy. He is
a guy that repeatedly turned down tackles on the perimeter,
didn't necessarily show the kind of effort that you expect
from a first round pick. And when you take someone
(01:17:53):
in the first round, you expect him to not only
be a player, you expect him to be an impact player.
Eli Apple has not played up to the expectation. And
in a secondary where you have d r C, you
have Jack Rabbit, you have Landing College, you have three
guys that have Pro Bowl credentials, he needed to step
up and play and he hasn't played to that level.
I think it was long overdue for them to suspend him.
(01:18:14):
They need to bring him back into the fold. Maybe
this will get his attention. Your teammates at the NFL Network,
Mike care follow and Ian Rapp Reports saying that uh
Eli apple suspension was in part because it refused to
take the field for the scout team. Rapp Report also
then saying that he got into a world wards with
one of the coaches. I mean, listen, like like just
so you understand, like in an NFL price, you have
(01:18:36):
fifty three guys, so everyone has to participate on Scout team.
The only guys who probably won't participate on scout team
for the New York Johns Eli Manning. If Odell Beckham Jr.
Is available, he probably doesn't do it. But everyone else
has to participate the fact that he refuses to and
he has no pulse on the wall, Yeah, that tells
you a lot about who he is and what he's about.
All the Giants are a topic as we play, and
(01:18:58):
now Doug gottlieb Earli areas is that the dog got
lab show as he filled in for the herd, and uh,
you know Doug's talking about a lot of different things.
But you know, Eli Manning had an interesting answer on
whether the Giants or the Patriots, or the Giants were
closer to the Browns or Patriots to the audio guys.
Paul Schwartz New York Post interviewed Eli Manning yesterday and
(01:19:21):
among the quotes, Eli still wants to play, loves football,
says he wants to compete for the job. This was
to me the curious quote, which I guess you have
to say, maybe he believes it may be hard to
realize or say it, but I don't think the Giants
are that far off, he doesn't. Now. Look, is it
fair to say they lost all three starting wide receivers
this year? Sure, but they can't block, can't tackle, can't
(01:19:43):
run the football, and their defensive players, when not suspended,
are fighting amongst each other. Where's the signs of hope?
Giants are a mess? And for Eli to not say
that or not know that, do not understand the leven
level of dysfunctionality? Is that the right? Maybe? And maybe
I have a I like you this word, I love
this word. Maybe I have a dystopian view of the
(01:20:06):
Giants future. Maybe I do. I think they're closer to
the Browns than they are then they honestly are to
to being like the Patriots. Well they are by record,
But the Giants job is the job you would take
Brookie if it became a Bucky, if it became available.
Is Doug just off base or is it just a
(01:20:27):
matter of how things are viewed. I think he's probably
looking solely at the record. Look, they didn't play well, um,
make no mistake. They had a lot of injuries. They
didn't play well. I think they underachieved on both sides
of the ball. But this is a team when we
looked at the roster. We felt like many of us
I include, it felt like this is a team that
could compete for the Super Bowl prior to the season.
They're not that far away. The defense is intact. They
had a lot of stars on defense that can play.
(01:20:49):
I think you need a better defensive coordinated to help
him get right. And then on the offense, you gotta
address the offensive line in the running game. If Eli
manager quarterback, you can't have him throw the ball forty times.
You gotta be able to run. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm
Dan Buyer in for Doug Gottlieb, and how close are
the Vikings to making a quarterback change? We tell you next.
It is amazing that Eli Manning says there's Yeah, there's
(01:21:11):
a lot of hope in New York. Okay, that's it's
a good way to think of things. Be positive entering
the new year. There should be positivity in other places
where teams actually have the hope of making the playoffs
are in the playoffs. That's what we dive into now
here on the Doug Gottlieb Show. He is Bucky Brooks
of the NFL Network and NFL veteran. Reach him on
(01:21:31):
Twitter at Bucky Brooks. I also gave him a nickname
last segment. I think I called him Brooksie. I think
that I think that ever was it just Bucky always?
Did you ever get a Brooksie? Hey? That's good. I
just uh, I gave him that. I gave Ralph oh
Anchor the nickname of Frank a couple of times as well.
So's just handing out nicknames with holiday cheer. The NFL
(01:21:54):
playoffs are gonna start after week seventeen, so we've got
about a week and a half before things really get rolling.
But when we look at the NFC and you look
at the a f C, I started off the show
with the grinch that I can be in saying, I
just don't think these playoffs are going to grab the
attention as other playoffs in the past. And I just
(01:22:15):
I refer to the tweets sent out by NFL research
that said, this is the first NFL playoffs season where
the Cowboys, Packers, Giants, Redskins, and forty Niners aren't in
the postseason in the Super Bowl era would have been
the last time something like that happened. But the the
(01:22:37):
name value of these teams and and every team in
the NFL has got name value. That's how big the
NFL is. But we know that some are bigger than others.
And that's just the issue of not only do we
lack those marquee teams, especially in the NFC, we are
lacking the marquee players in the impact that they could
have on the playoffs. We were missing Aaron Rodgers, were
(01:22:59):
missing a Zeke ol Elliott. And even even if these
teams were I don't know that the Philadelphia Eagles wore
the number one seed. If Carson Wentz would have been healthy,
it would have been a different story. But we are
just missing that in this year's playoffs, and I think
that Bucky is going to I want to say, water
down the product, but I just don't think it's gonna
grab as many people as other playoff years in the past. No,
(01:23:19):
the star chaser is the casual fans that love the stars.
They certainly won't tune in because you won't see some
of those stars Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr. J. J. Watt,
those guys aren't participating, they won't be in the tournament. However,
old school football is that love football, love seeing new matchups,
new teams. A lot of fresh blood. Yeah, we'll see
the next generation of stars. I'm excited about the postseason.
(01:23:41):
I'm excited about what transpires because I have a belief
that the best football teams, the teams that win championships,
are the most complete, the most balanced teams. And I
know we have a narrative where it's a quarterback driven league,
and certainly the quarterback play is necessary, but the teams
that win are the teams that also get the support
from the defense to special teams in the running game.
(01:24:03):
I'm hoping that that bears true when we see the
end of the postseason. The Minnesota Vikings go into the
playoffs with case Keenum as they're likely starting quarterback. But
it was a couple of weeks ago, maybe a month
or so ago, that there was a question and Mike
Zimmer didn't do us any favors. It didn't do himself
any favors when he told the media that he knew
(01:24:24):
who starting quarterback was going to be for the specific week,
but was going to tell the media once he told
the team. So now you're wondering, jeez, if Teddy Bridgewater
is fully healthy, are they just going back with Teddy Bridgewater. Well,
in the end, it was Case Keenum and it's been
Case Keenum's job ever since. In fact, Case Keenum's name
was even brought up as a possible m VP candidate.
But Bucky. Today, we've got news that Sam Bradford could
(01:24:45):
be returning to practice very soon, as soon as next week.
And now the question becomes, Okay, well, if Sam Bradford
is healthy, he was the starting quarterback at the start
of the season, do you give the job back to
Sam Bradford? If everything is a goal this Case Keenum
still get the job. It's amazing to me that there
is still quarterback questions in Minnesota. With how good Case
(01:25:06):
Keenom is played, Case Keendom is played great. Case Keenum
has succeeded every expectation that anybody could have the Case
Keendom based on his career prior to getting the Minnesota
I think what you're dealing with. Though, in Minnesota, Mike
Zimmer and the defensive staff they see Case Keenom every day.
They know exactly who he is, and some of the
hesitation and reluctance to name him the long term starter
(01:25:28):
stands from the fact that they may not believe that
he is the guy that is really a starter in
this league. He is a guy that has experienced on
a nice hot run and at some point he's going
to come back and return to being the player that
he's always been. I think the good thing with Sam
Bradford coming back to practice it may not be necessarily
for Sam Bradford to be the starter, but maybe he
(01:25:49):
is the backup. Last year, sam Bradford led the league
in completion percentage completed over seventy His balls had a
twenty five touchdown the interception ratio. His passer rating was
almost at a hundred. This season, we saw him come
out the gate smoking in that first game. I think
the Minnesota Vikings would have an opportunity to put an
established quarterback in the number two hole, just in case
(01:26:12):
Kate Keenum doesn't play well, but also as a competitive player,
case Keendom now has to look over his shoulder. Sam
Bradford is there. That means he always has to be
on his game. I think case Keenum plays better when
he's uncomfortable. I think Mike Zimmer is going to continue
to make him uncomfortable so he can get the best
out of him. And you can't argue with the success
that Adam Feeling has had in his rapport with case Keenum.
(01:26:34):
Stefan Diggs doesn't seem to have missed anything in Kyle
Rudolf still a viable option in that in that passing
game best once you punch on the perimeter football, Adam
Feeling and Stefan dig do a great job of going
and getting the ball. These guys are terrific making these
fifty fifty catches um down the perimeter. Case Keenum loves
to throw the ball up there. In fact, he kind
of reminds me of a guy. When I was working
with the Carolina Panthers, we had Jake Delone. Jake got
(01:26:56):
on a similar run and we went all the way
to the Super Bowl with Jake Delone super Bowl thirty eight,
where we lost in New England pages on a field goal.
It broke my heart. But Jake Delone was a guy
that kind of played like that similar put the ball
up got hard, had been a journeyman, finally got his
opportunity and show that he could play, and he had
a nice two or three year run before he got
back to being who he was. I think for Case Keenum,
(01:27:16):
the Minnesota Vikings are trying to continue to ride that
lightning and a bottle thing that they've caught, but they'll
see they're still also trying to have a contingency plan
if he plays bad. I think that is why you
see in the Sam Bradford back to practice deal and
why it could be a huge thing for Kings. Well,
this is a big deal for a lot of NFL teams,
and obviously it's it's stupid for me to say it's
(01:27:38):
a big deal when you make the playoffs, that's obvious.
But Bucky, as you know, you just talked about the
run that you went out with the Carolina Panthers. He
end up being in a super Bowl and all of
a sudden you are an adam minitary lest second field
goal away from from winning a Super Bowl. You don't
have that opportunity, didn't It wasn't like you guys were
back there the next year. Patriots were, but it wasn't
like the Panthers ended up going back. And when you
(01:28:00):
look at these windows, there's no guarantee that any of
these teams that for how they are constructed, of the
question that you have that are going to be going
on a run like this, And in Philadelphia's case, you
want to sit there and say, well, they've got Carson
Wentz and his full career ahead of them. And then
you just point to Dan Marino and say, look at
(01:28:20):
what happens. See, there's no guarantee that once you make
it to a super Bowl that you're going to be back.
So every single run or every opportunity that you can make,
you've got to take advantage of it. And when I
mentioned the franchises that are on the outside looking in,
you don't have to think that with a full season
with Aaron Rodgers healthy, that the Packers would be back
in it next year would be a threat. So there's
(01:28:41):
there's a hurdle that you don't have to pass this
year jump over that you would next year. So the
time is so now for these teams. Maybe that's the
intriguing aspect that we get in these playoffs. It's very intriguing.
I think you make a good point about there's no
guaranteed next step. When I played for the Green Bay
Packers seven parts of those seasons, nine we went to
the Super Bowl. Frish Friz Sherman, the late Frist Sherman,
(01:29:04):
who was the decordinator, talked about there's no guaranteed next
step I mean, you have to earn the right to
get back to where you were the previous year. I
think for all of these teams, you have to really
capture the moment, take advantage of the opportunity. That is
why Mike Zammer maybe continuing to ride with Case Keenom
even though he knows he may not be the guy
that is their long term future of the position next year,
of the year beyond, but he's hot right now. He
(01:29:26):
has given them the best chance to win. He plays
better with a little uh pressure in the background. I
think that's why you see in San Bradford come back.
But all these teams, Philadelphia UM, playing with Nick Foles,
everyone is trying like heck to try and figure out
a way to get to the super Bowl, to have
sixty minutes away from win the world title. Because who
knows what happens in that sixty minutes you could end
(01:29:48):
up winning. That's why everyone is going for it all.
I mean, everyone is going all out to make sure
it happens. Bucky Brooks mentioned Nick Fole's name, and we
brought up Nick Foles earlier on the show with Frank
Swab of Yahoo Sports, who covers the NFL for the
Shutdown Corner blog and when we asked Frank is Nick
Foles the most important player in these NFC playoffs, he
(01:30:11):
had this response, has to be because he's the one
wild card. We kind of know where we're getting, you know,
I mean to answer that question, it's almost got to
be a quarterback, right, I mean, you're not gonna say
Everson Griston or somebody like that. Great player. It's and
then you look, you know, you kind of know, like
keeps keenom by now has a baseline. Why were trying
to we're trying the case keenom and then he got
(01:30:32):
Cam and Drew and even you know, even with Jared
Cosston experiencing, we can kind of guess what he's gonna do.
So you're right, I think it probably is. It's probably
is going to swing this thing one way or another.
Either we are gonna be talking about him like he's
Jeff Hosteller in January, or he's gonna shrup hole thing
like you almost did on Monday Night. And it's and
(01:30:53):
it's Inconsistency's kind to be just probbling because look at again,
he's had two games played great in one of like
Charable and the other who are you who are you
getting going? I don't really know. I mean, when you
look at the a f C, you can say Tom
Brady because Tom Brady is what stirs the Patriots drinking
and how the Patriots go out time. Brady goes how
the Patriots got When you flip over to the other
(01:31:14):
side of the NFC, when you see the team defensive Minnesota,
when you see that the how New Orleans runs the ball,
when you see these other squads, it all comes down
to the Eagles and their offense, and their offense is
now based on Nick Foles, making him the most important
guy in the NFC playoffs. He is very important. Um,
if you have a different one, feel free to say.
(01:31:34):
But I I don't know of anybody on the on
the outside that that you could even put. I mean,
if the Seahawks get in, maybe Russell Wilson, but I
don't think the seas are good enough as a team
to make the depth, deepest run that the Eagles dig into.
My trustee, note car Stack, and I'm gonna pull out
a name, and I'm gonna pull out the m v P.
Cam Newton, and I'm gonna say he's the most important
(01:31:57):
guy I just looked as some numbers I had to
re team pool. Of this last six games, the Panthers
are five and one. He has an eleven to two
touchdown to interception ratio, and he's averaging fifty nine rush
yards per game that touchdown. The interception ratio since Week
ten is the best in the National Football League since
the Panthers got rid of Kelvin Benjamin, and they've decided,
(01:32:19):
like Cam, We're gonna let you be Cam. We're gonna
let you get back to running around and making all
the plays that you made very early in his career.
He has played at a high level. This team is
rolling because of it. They have an outstanding defense, they
have an offense that is explosive and dynamic because he
can make plays. He to me, is the most important
player because when Cam Newton is on, I don't know
(01:32:40):
if there's another team that can beat the Carolina Panthers
because they have all the other things that you need
to win. I think it's how do I put this?
I think it's the most difficult to stop. And it's
funny because last night watching the Cactus Bowl and watching
how Kansas stayed just run quarterback. It's not even quarterback draws.
It just design quarterback, that's all it was. If if
(01:33:04):
Cam Newton is doing that, or if Cam Newton is
running the ball, and whether it be getting forty or
fifty or sixty yards, that's the toughest thing to stop.
I I think of of of almost any team in
the NFC, because and early in the year to Caroline
Pants were trying to make Cam Newton do things that
he isn't necessarily built to do. He's not built to
play the game like Tom Brady. He's not built to
be a guy that throws the ball thirty, thirty or
(01:33:25):
five times with a lot of short passes. He's a
home run hitter. He runs a ball with power, is
a power in between the tackles runner. And then he's
a long ball specialist. And when they've allowed him to
get back to doing those things, this offense has really
been terrific when he's on his game. Christian McCaffrey has
given him a nice weapon. Greg Olsen coming back has
(01:33:46):
been the number one receiver they're trying to get. Devin
Funch is untracked as their number one because for the
first time in his career, he is beginning to see
double coverage. It has changed the way that he is
approached the game. He has to find a way to
defeat the teams. That's what he lead receivers do. If
they're able to get consistent performance and production in the
past game, this defense, this running game is good enough
(01:34:08):
to be any team in NFC, they very welcome wind
up in Super Bowl. I had Cam Newton fourth in
my m v P rankings of of heading into week seventeen.
The numbers may not bear it, but when you when
you talk about the it was just as he threw
an interception this past week. He had one from November
and December after or leading into the Tampa Bay game.
(01:34:29):
I had Russell Wilson and Todd Gurley and Tom Brady
ahead of him. But Cam's numbers may not jump out
at you, but when you talk about the the touchdown
I n T ratio is a big deal and just
what he's done on the ground is made up for
anything that may be locking in the air. He's Bucky Brooks.
I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio, and coming up next, If you could
trade your playoff quarterback for Jimmy Garoppolo, would you that
(01:34:53):
next year? On Fox Sports Radio Doug Gottliebs Show on
Fox Sports Radio, He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer's worre
it for Doug today here on fs ARE. Today's show
is brought to you by True Car. I'mline. Car shopping
can't be confusing, not anymore. With True Price from True Car,
now you can know the exact price you'll pay for
your next car. So visit True Car to enjoy a
more confident car buying experience. So San Francisco forty niners
(01:35:13):
very confident now that Jimmy Garoppolo is taken over the
starting job. San Francisco four straight victories with Garoppolo as
their starting quarterback, and then the other game that he
appeared that he didn't start that they lost to the
Seahawks ended up throwing a touchdown pass at the end
of the game when he took over for C. J.
Bethard in the final minute. So it's been it's been
everything and more that forty nine fans could have hoped
(01:35:36):
for when Jimmy Garoppolo took over. Are you surprised by
the success that he has had in this first in
this first month, I guess in the San Francisco uniform.
I am surprised a little bit at his success that
he's had because we hadn't seen him playing, and you
just never know what guys are going to look like
when they finally get their opportunity to start and defenses
are able to adjust. I was optimistic on his prospects
(01:35:59):
of being a really good player um having studied him
not only Eastern Illinois, but studying him a couple of preseasons.
I thought he was a quick rhythm pass. I thought
he was very accurate. He had the athleticism and the
MAXI that you look for. But you just never know
how guys are going to react, particularly when I get
out of their preferred system. In San Francisco. I think
the best thing that they did is they waited before
(01:36:21):
they put him on the field, and really they put
him on the field, not by designing. C J. Bethic
got hurt at the end of the Seahawks game. After
four weeks of practicing with the team, he goes in,
and what I've been impressed with the most is his confidence,
his ability to elevate the play of his teammates, and
the way the guys have rallied to him. We knew
what he could do physically, but he just kind of
(01:36:42):
oozes franchise quarterback. The sound effects and I don't know
if you saw it was on Twitter or whatever. Um
NFL Films did a thing where they follows him that
too minute drive that he had against the Tennessee Titans.
How calm and cool he was, how he was able
to be a leader, how he took it to the
field and showed people how to play in the clutch.
(01:37:02):
That is what your franchise quarterback should do. Your franchise
quarterback has to give hope to his teammates and his fans.
That's what Jimmy Garoppolo has done. There's a buzz in
San Francisco because they feel like they got the right quarterback.
They're winning games, and they are building a lot of
momentum heading into It feels like it's Valentine's Day in
sports talk radio because everybody is falling in love with
(01:37:24):
Jimmy Garoppolo. So we figured that this would be a
good opportunity to feel like you feel like you don't
want to fall in love with No. Actually I was,
I know I'm not gonna be that guy. And say
I was in on him early, but you're in on
him early. It was you know what, I was not
convinced in the Patriots stint. It was the Bears game
when even they couldn't score touchdowns. He just kicked field
(01:37:46):
goals that game. But there was just something about him.
I didn't know if the Seahawks touchdown pass was was
a fluke or not. And Seattle was up by you know,
eighteen points anyway, when they ended up scoring the touchdowns,
so well, it didn't matter too much. But I I believed,
I'm just not one to go completely overboard, and I
think that people are are just they're they're they're so
(01:38:08):
smitten Bucky with Jimmy Garoppolo, it is amazing. It is.
They hook line, you know, and sinker whatever it is
on Jimmy. I mean, it's easy to fall in love
with him. I mean, the guys only undefeated, he's only
completing six passes. He has a ninety eight point nine
passive rating in the San Francisco forty nine is with
the same cast of characters. There were one of ten.
(01:38:30):
Right now, they look like a playoff team. Carlos hides
that'd be a Super Bowl contender if Jimmy Garoppolo is
there week one, well, I mean, this is when you
make bold statements. This is what you do. I learned.
I learned this from and j Roz and Andre Rozza said,
you might as well say something bodacious because guess what,
if you're right, you look like a genius. Sid not
they forget about it in a week. That's actually the
(01:38:53):
sports talk radio entirely. So that's that's all that it is.
That's the secret. That's the eleven herbs and I sus
of KFC. That's the secret to sports talk radio. What
we are going to do. We are going to take
Jimmy Garoppolo and see if you would swap out your
playoff contending team for Jimmy Garoppolo. Okay, let's start it out.
(01:39:15):
Let's New England, that's where he was. He couldn't beat
out Tom Brady. You would not take out Tom Brady
for Jimmy Garoppolo. Correct, Correct, Bucky, You're gonna keep Tom
Brady for this playoff run in January? I mean, have
you seen Tom Brady of late has not played like
(01:39:35):
Tom Brady AVO. I mean, maybe I would go with
Jimmy g Jimmy G is hot. Okay, it's okay. You
can see it's a push for the Patriots. What about
the Pittsburgh Steelers? Would you keep Ben Roo keep I'll
keep being I'll keeping I I agree with that. With
the Jacksonville Jaguars, yes, Jimmy Garoppolo right now absolutely seem
(01:39:59):
playing portals hit the road jack the Kansas City Chiefs.
Alex Smith does what he does for Andy Reid, but
would Jimmy Garoppolo do it better for Kansas City. I'm
gonna still stick with Alex Smith. Alex Smith, Yeah, Alex Smith,
I'm gonna go Alex. I agree. I would actually stick
with Alex Smith as well. Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacca.
(01:40:19):
Would you rather have Jimmy give me Jimmy and the
Tennessee Tite. I don't even know. Because this Marcus Mariota
hater in Buckeye, you just you just think he's limitations.
He has twelve touchdowns and fifteen interceptions, and anybody else
we would be worrying out. But then when we say
what about the future, you say he's limited. He's limited
(01:40:41):
with what he does. Give me Jimmy G. Jimmy G.
Tennessee Titans. How about this one? The Los Angeles Chargers
and Philip Rivers. Hmm, It's hard. It's hard. It's hard
for me to see another team with the Charge, another
quarterback with the Charges outside of Philip Rivers. I'm gonna
go Philip Rivers. I I agree with that. I would
stick with the Rivers as well. And uh, Eric Roberts
(01:41:03):
team are executive producer the Buffalo Bills. Would you rather
have Tyrod Taylor Jimmy Garoppolo? Oh, I mean they've been
trying to give him away ty Rose joh for like
two years. I mean I would take Jimmy Garoppolo over
Nate Peterman and Tyrod Taylor? Yeah, I would. I would
as well. I'd almost take him over Gosh. Else where's
some other Bills quarterbacks outside of Jim Kelly j Johnson? Yeah,
(01:41:24):
Rob Johnson, it's Patrick. We got, Yeah, we got we
got a whole bunch. He sounds like so the Steelers,
the Steelers chiefs and Charges, and you pushed on the Patriots,
which is amazing. NFC. This is where it's interesting. Would
you trade Jimmy gar or would you trade take out
Nick Foles and put in Jimmy Garoppolo if you're the
(01:41:45):
Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, is Nick Foles the worst starting quarterback
in the playoffs. I'm not saying he's the worst when
he just had a bad game so our optics were
just hanging on the Monday night game. But right now,
still would take Jimmy gal Would you rather have Bordles
or Folds starts? I have Fols. Okay, there you go there.
Blake Bortles would be the worst. What about case Keenoman guy?
We just talked a lot about what about Sam Bradford
(01:42:08):
or Jimmy Garoppolo? Garoppolo because he's gonna fish the game, okay?
And Teddy Bridgewater Jimmy Garff. Okay, there's a clean sweep
for the Minnesota Vikings. This is the toughest one that
I actually had a determining if I would swap him
in or u Jared Goff. The reason being is just
we were so down on golf. We've talked about this,
(01:42:30):
and now all of a sudden, Jared Goff is playing
great football, and Robert Woods is healthy and Todd Girley's
running wild. I'm going I'm going I'm going with Jerry Goff.
But I do believe they're interchangeable. If you put Jimmy
g in l A, they roll. Jerry Golf is in
the same Sean McVeigh, long as I gut Sean McVeigh,
I'm gonna score a bunch of points. Yeah. And and
this isn't this isn't long term. This is just for
(01:42:52):
right now entering the playoffs. Who would you want as
your quarterback? Okay, more experienced? What about the New Orleans
Saints and Drew Brees. So here's the thing about Drew Brees.
Drew Brees, seventy of his passes are ten yards or less.
That's what he's doing. And it was all small ball.
I know it. I mean, Jimmy g doesn't have a
(01:43:14):
bigger arm. But I mean, I know it's will sound
crazy like, but my man is thirty seven. At some
point he has to come back to earth. Let's go
Jimmy Garoppol, Jimmy g Q. Let's go Jimmy take the
breeze away on out of town of New Orleans. So
you would go, Jimmy Garoppolo, I agree. I mean, I mean,
(01:43:35):
they make Ted Ginn catch five yard passes and all
Ted Ginn used to do is just run north and south.
That's all. But now in New Orleans, that's all. It's
as long as I have number forty one, Albacamara, I'm good, alright,
So we're gonna put in Jimmy g in New Orleans one.
I like your I like your boldness, but I do
(01:43:56):
think that the same argument that you make for Drew
Brees is the same one you would make for Alex Smith.
And we kept Alex Smith. So now we're ditching Drew Brees. Different.
Kansas City's offense is different. They run the quarterback, they
do all that stuff, all right, Alex Smith is running around.
Do you see run the option? Ran the option the
other day to Kareem Hunt? But we go run the
option with Drew Brees. No, No, we wouldn't know. He wouldn't.
(01:44:18):
Drew Brees isn't running seventy yards down the field. Cam Newton,
Cam Newton, would you? It's tough because Jimmy Garoppolo is
a better passer than Cam Newton. There is a better
pass I just in my M v P race. There's
no way I'm taking. However, in Carolina, Cam is a
better fitting that offense. So I would say we can Yeah,
(01:44:39):
good because you also just said Cam Newton is the
most important player as the playoffs, and if you were
to take the most important player and replace it with
Jimmy Garoppolo, then you would be head over heels. What
about Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. That's tough. Yeah,
it's very tough because we're talking about that Matt Ryan
that's playing this year version. I mean, Mandy Ice was
(01:45:01):
just an MVP a year ago. I want the update
on Matt Ryan because this latest update that they gave
me is not as efficient as the previous one. I
needed Matt Ryan seventeen point two just like Ryan oh
nine twelve, I think right now. Jimmy G. Yeah, we
got jim Yeah, I agree as well. So there's only
(01:45:22):
one team so far in the NFC that we would
actually keep as our quarterback, and it's Jared Goff. Finally,
Russell Wilson and the Seahawks, who would be on the
outside looking in. Yeah, you have to because Jimmy G
would get killed behind that don't off and and and
how awful would it be that you're you know man, Yeah, hey,
(01:45:44):
you know how bad the Shase line is they designed
how Russell scrambles that that like, just think about that.
I know it's broad, Bucky, and I know you're more
in the xs and ohs than I am, but I
like that. But it's planned. Like that's how bad it is.
They have to plan how Russell Wilson scrambles to get
away from pressure. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm dan buyer. That
(01:46:05):
is who you would trade for. Jimmy Garoppolo. Man a
lot more teams in the playoffs. Looks like they'd rather
have Jimmy Garoppolo than the current quarterback, says the Doug
Gottlieb Show. We would not trade Ralph Irvin to bring
in Jimmy Garoppolo because Ralph brings us the latest of
what's happening in the world of sports, including some college
football action. In the world of bowls, another week seventeen
(01:46:26):
news in the NFL, Hey Ralph, hello, gentlemen, and yes
we do have Bowl able finalist. Florida State took out
Southern miss forty two to thirteen. They win the Independence Bowl.
They've already kicked off the Pinstripe Bullet Yankee Stadium, Iowa,
taking on Boston College and the Hawkeyes with a three
nothing lead ten forty five to play in the first quarter.
(01:46:48):
Later it'll be Arizona Purdue in the Foster Farms Bowl,
and then Texas in Missouri in the Texas Bowl. NFL news,
well it's coming today. First, the New York Giants. They
have suspended Eli Apple for their season finale this weekend
against Washington for a quote pattern of behavior that his
conduct detrimental to the team end quote. This after he
(01:47:12):
had been called a cancer by teammate Landon Collins. Another
player trying to hit the field this weekend, that's DeShawn Jackson.
He practiced today with the Buccaneers trying to get on
the field for their season finale against New Orleans. Has
been a disappointing year for DeShawn Jackson. And there may
be some other bad news, but we will have that
(01:47:34):
later in the hour. Talking about DeShawn Jackson. Okay, all right,
when we do the press here on the out, yes,
that will be the case. And you know it's interesting.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn't give Jason Garrett confidence,
but he said he was a bad idea to change
the head coach, saying, quote, it's not in the best
(01:47:54):
interest of the Cowboys right now to be considering a
head coaching change, and quote, he's always been loyal, that's
for sure, to his as much as we think otherwise. Yeah,
I did the numbers yesterday. Guys. There have only been
eight head coaches in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.
We know that Tom Landry was there for so long,
but it's not like they were fifteen. I mean, this
(01:48:15):
is going back fifty sixty years, so it's all the
way back to that's just as a little bit more,
a little bit more loyal than we would give Jerry
Jones credit for. Thanks Ralph, looking forward to the press.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer. I'm glad he mentioned
Jerry Jones, because there's a cowboy that is making news,
(01:48:35):
des Bryant. Bucky is talking and des Briant is talking
about his production or lack thereof. He's talking about his
salary or what could be the lack thereof. A lot
of talk today out of Cowboys camp from des Bryants.
As Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs last week and
now there's some question or what Dallas is going to
do and and the the head coaching situation is rough.
(01:48:58):
Just said, doesn't look like they're gonna make a change.
Could see some changes on offense, and does Bryant may
need some help around him. But he's never gonna be
the des Bryant that he was a few years back.
And I think that's the toughest thing maybe for des
Briant to realize or others to realize as well. It's
just not He's not gonna be that physical. It's not
a top three wide receiver anymore. No, that's over. It's
(01:49:19):
over for him in terms of being a top five receiver.
What DS Brian can do is maybe transition to being
a number two receiver. But here's the problem with Dez Brown.
When you look at his game, his game has always
been built on athleticism, his ability to win fifty fifty
balls and to run in breaking routes. When you look
at what he has traditionally done for the Cowboys slants, digs,
(01:49:41):
phades down the field, he's not what we call a
precise route runner, meaning he doesn't win with his ability
to set defenders up, stop start quickness, getting in and
out of breaks. He doesn't have that slickness to his
game that elite wide receivers have and so because he's
limited that and he hasn't played a bunch of different spots. Now.
(01:50:02):
I don't know if it's on him or the Cowboys
coaching staff, but he hasn't been a guy that has
played in the slot, out wide, played Z, played X,
played E. He hasn't done that. So it's harder for
him to transition as an older player like a guy
like Larry Fitzgerald has been able to do because Larry
chained positions. Larry was a consummate pro when it came
(01:50:22):
to running rouse and understanding all of the pieces of
the puzzle. So for Daz Bryant as an older player,
this could get ugly unless he's able to overhaul his
game in the off season. I don't know. We'll see,
because this would be something that he should have been
doing when he was younger. But I don't know, we'll see.
And then for the Cowboys coaching staff, they haven't challenged
(01:50:44):
him enough in terms of moving him around. Maybe he's
incapable of doing it, but a good offensive coordinator should
find a way to move his his main chest piece
around the board to get him favorable matchups. The Cowboys
have never been able to do that. So I understand
when he can plains about the scheme because office coordinators
should be able to script some plays to get him free.
But he also has to work on his game and
(01:51:06):
make sure he's well around to create separation. This was
des Briant earlier today, we're gonna hear from him talking
about his money, impossible salary and a little bit. But
this was Dez Bryant on I guess being des Briant.
I don't know, but you know, if that came about,
I'm still Dere's Briant. I'm still going over the top.
If it's there, what I can grab it, I'm gonna
grab it. It's just who I am. You know, Hell yeah,
(01:51:29):
what do you mean kind of what kind of question
was that? See that that's done? You know, I'm Texas
boy all day. Okay, Now, there's about eighty things in
that twenty second fight. Um, the sweetheart can hit the
road jack. They also part of going over the top
where I think you just talked about it for thirty seconds.
(01:51:50):
How maybe des Brant isn't the same des Bryant yet
for some reason, des Bryant says, I'm still des Bryant.
There's what what is it? What is not reaching him?
That is the loving, loving eyes never see. He's not
able to look at himself and uh make a critical
assessment of where he is in his game and depending
on who his position coach is position, depending on his
(01:52:13):
head coach, no one has really told him the truth
about where he is and where he ranks um amongst
his peers. And so for Dez Bryant to think right now,
I'm looking he's scheduled to make twelve point five million
dollars in eighteen UM. That's the money that you pay
a top five, top ten receiver. He's not that anymore.
And for him to think that he won't budge off
(01:52:34):
the pay cut or that he can still play the
game the same way, that's not realistic. And so he
is either going to have to look at the mirror
and see what he is, or someone in that front
office is going to have to have a sit down
and a film session to show him why he's not
what he thinks he is, and then they have to
put a plan in place to help him get back
(01:52:55):
to being the best player that he can be at
this time with his with the limitations on his game,
and just to verify that was even saying no at
the beginning about the pay cut when he was asked
by reporters. So that's what he said, no, no, And
then he went into I'm still Dez Briant. I'm listen
that Listen. If I look at if I have the
list of the things that the Cowboys need, paying, does
(01:53:16):
Bryant an absurd amount of money is not on that list.
In fact, it probably doesn't even make the College Football
Playoff of the list of things that the Dallas Cowboys,
it would be like a fifth or sixth on my list.
And and that's not even with the wide receiver position.
I mean, how much talk has there been over the
last couple of weeks about just getting somebody opposite des
Bryant or somebody to be able to do more to
(01:53:37):
try to open things up for a team that still
needs to run the ball with Ezekiel Elliott to be
at their absolute best, and also get defenders that can
actually stop opposing teams because health has been an issue
on the defensive side of the ball, and they also
need a bit of a talent upgrade wide receiver and
fixing does Bryant or paying des Bryant would be so
far down the list of the Cowboys needs in the
(01:53:58):
off season. In terms of paying does Briant, it should
be down on the list, but in terms of fixing
their wide receiver corps, it should be the top priority.
The biggest issue with the Dallas Cowboys right now offensively,
they don't have enough weapons on the outside to force
people to play a balance UH defense against him. Right now,
everyone just loads it up. They stuff the box. They're
make a concerted effort to stop Ezekier Elliott, and the
Cowboys don't have a way to punish them for their
(01:54:22):
commitment to stop in the run. Someone on the outside
has the emerging right now, they don't have that person
on the roster. Ryan Switz and cold Bys are nice
slove receivers. Terrence Williams is a nice UH complimentary player,
but des Bryant is not a number one, so they
gotta upgrade that position. They also need to find someone
who can do some of the dirty work in the middle.
Jason Witten is a nice story, but he's no longer
(01:54:44):
the guy that he wants was in the league. Let's
wrap it up with des talking about his pay cut
that apparently won't happen. I haven't had no, I haven't
heard no talks about that. But if it comes, if
it comes, well, I don't know. Probably not. Hell no, man,
I believe in me. There you go. Hey, I like
the positivity of days believing in me, But no pay
cut in his future. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer.
(01:55:07):
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show today, brought to you
by auto Zone, getting your zone with great value offers
and free services that help your vehicle deliver its best performance.
Auto Zone is everything to get you what you need
get in the zone. Auto Zone it is the Doug
Gotlip Show. You can always reach us on Twitter. I'm
at Dan Buyer on Fox, and you can get Bucky
at Bucky Brooks. It was a changing of the guard
for one power in college football. We'll tell you how
(01:55:30):
it turned out today. Coming up next year on the
Doug gottlib Show, Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug. Thanks
for hanging out with us. As we figured out, Jimmy
Garoppolo is pretty much better than most of the quarterbacks
in the NFL playoffs. And that was that was, oh,
(01:55:51):
it was, it was. There we go. We got things.
About fifteen teams I think about ten of them were
replaced him, Bucky. I mean we can replace him, Jimmy
Garoppolo his own five. No one's better, my goodness, my goodness.
And then half the jobs in the NFL that could
become available are at least worth taking. But Bucky doesn't
want anything to do with the Cleveland bron says, he
(01:56:13):
doesn't look good in orange. Would not take that job
if it becomes available. Do I wear a big brown
uh sweatsuit? Like? What do you wear with brown brown
sweats What kind of shoes do you put with that?
Do I put brown Air Force ones with that? What
do I wear? You know, it's a very it's a
very good all the light look at on dirty then
get on the sidelines. Well, that's what you're making the
(01:56:35):
money to buy new ones. It doesn't matter. That's a
good point, bobare technical producer. Helping us out is Eric Roberts,
our executive producer, and our good buddy. Ralph Irvin now
brings us the press, the press. This is the time
of Ralph can give us the latest of what's happening
(01:56:56):
in the world of sports. It's you know, we think
it's a busy week, but at of people are taking
this week off. So really we've got college football in
a little bit of this and that. Hey, Ralph, Hello,
and first off, Bucky gotta go with the all orange
orange on orange air Force ones. The most orange outside
of a Brown's game is usually at lambeau Field in
(01:57:17):
December because of the Blaze Orange. Everybody wears their hunting
gear to stay warm for Backer games. And I still
we need the cream sickles back in Tampa. That that is.
If there's one thing that I want to see before
I die, it's at the Buccaneers. Bring back the cream
sickle and the bucko Bruce logo. Well, when you're talking
about the Buccaneers today, you're talking about Sean Jackson. Okay,
(01:57:39):
who did practice with Tampa. But let's dial it back
to Sunday when his car was found after it hit
a tree and it had marijuana and hollow point bullets
in it. Because that did happen Jackson says, Well, a
representative of Jackson, it was a friend of Deshawn's who
borrowed his car while he was out of town and
(01:58:01):
then left it there. Interesting. The police found the Chevy
Silverado Sunday nights. They say Jackson gave them the name
of the person who he said was driving the car,
but declined to help them get the driver back to
the scene of the crash. Okay, I am I have
a rental car right now, because, as I said, my
brakes are getting done. I did not. I had my backpack.
(01:58:21):
I'm not taking anything from my other car except my
parking card and my sunglasses. So to say that, yeah
it's his car and that his buddy, what are you
gonna bring along into Seaun's car? Make sure I got
my weed and make sure I got my bullets, and
then we'll be able to go. I don't know, just
I can't leave all without it, right right, I mean
there was there was some dangerous times around Tampa recently.
(01:58:43):
I gotta keep it in my purple Crown Royals. It was, Yeah,
it's not his car. None of it was his, obviously,
as the statement said from his representative. So we go
on to something a little bit happy. By the way,
not the only wreck involving the Buccaneers, because the entire
seventeen season has been a r hitting a tree, especially
(01:59:05):
for de Sean Jackson. Yes, well, today the NBA showed
off their new uniforms. That's right. As part of their
Nike deal, they introduced their fourth alternate jerseys, the City
Edition version. Some of these are really cool. The Lakers
actually have a like a snake skin print. Have you
seen this tribute to Kobe Bryant and the Mamba. The
(01:59:28):
Lasers have a slight plaid for Dr Jack Ramsey to
honor him. So there's a it's kind of a shadow.
You can't tell it's black, but it's kind of a
shadow effect of plaid. But they're the hottest ones jazz.
Oh yeah, it's like, isn't it like almost like orange? Yeah?
The Bucks one is pretty great too, But I'm parcel. Yeah,
(01:59:48):
I didn't mind some of those Atlanta stinks. Everybody's going
up in arms in Atlanta. Hawks have some of the
worst uniforms in sports right now. The University of Wisconsin
is playing in the Orange Bowl and it's part of
their gift bag. They got a PlayStation four, they got
wireless headphones, a thirty nine inch TV, and more. But
do you know what some of the guys are going
to really be excited about bringing home. What's that? That
(02:00:10):
was the four dred and fifty pound hammer head shark
they caught between after practice one day this week. As
a Wisconsin alum, there's a lot of things that you
could catch worse in Lake Monona or Lake Mendota if
you're fishing so on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
To catch a shark, that's that's a pretty good tail. Well,
they had a chance to do some deep sea fishing,
(02:00:32):
and the Badger's Twitter account posted a photo of Yes
players surrounding a four hundred and fifty pound hammer head.
Of course, the Badgers square off with Miami on Saturday night.
You're a big fisherman at all. No, I can't. I
can't say that that that that's that's real big in
the repertoire, I didn't get that. Yeah, no, me that
it's I don't mind catching the vision's getting it off
the hook. That's the problem. I don't know if I
(02:00:52):
could hook it. I don't want to mess with debate
if you could bait in and hook it from me?
And yeah, yeah, and probably probably that amazing. Anything else, Ralph, Well,
one other thing, really quick. Jose Altuve your a p
Man of the Year, followed by Super Bowl champion Tom
Brady third place, the guy who lost Lebron, James. So.
(02:01:13):
I thought it would have been obvious that Kevin Durant
would at least come in third because he actually won
a title. But it's Lebron again. For Lebron is like
an automatic, I guess. I mean, come on, man, I
look at what Lebron does he hate over here? No, no,
not at all. No, I don't hate Lebron. I'm just saying,
if you're you know, Ralph points out, you got two champions,
why would why wouldn't Kevin Durant get it over Lebron?
(02:01:35):
Since Kevin Durant won the title because he had a
whole crew of people with him. That's why he'd want
a team that was ready. Mate, I know, I understand
what you're saying, but
