listening to Fox Sports Radio Boom America Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the beautiful City
of Angels, Los Angeles, California. Let's dig in, shall we?
(00:42):
The Texans one again last night? Again again last night?
Houston UH continues to run rough shod over their division
after a terrible start to the season, thanks in in
no smart small part to the Indianapolis Colts to siding
that you know, we could tie, but we prefer to lose.
(01:04):
That's what happened when they were owing three. They've proceeded
to win that game, run off eight consecutive wins, and
now they're eight and three and the question is how
good are they? And the answer is, if you if
you ever wondered what the Texans would look like with
competent quarterback play, here you go, right, They got Lamar
(01:27):
Miller twelve carries hundred sixty two yards. You got DeShawn
Watson who also had nine carries for seventy yards, and
he threw the ball in twenty four times, completed nineteen
of them, two touchdowns, nary an interception. I just wanted
to say nary to sound sound a little high flutant.
Narry an interception. But if this is Deshaun Watson great,
(01:51):
the answers, now, is he bad? The answers No. But
Deshaun Watson is pretty much what you always thought he
would be, which is he's a great leader. Guys just
like him. And that is a part that is a
part of uh of the um quantitation. Right, that is
(02:16):
a part of the quantitations the word I'm looking for, right,
Like if you're it's it's one plus two play or
A plus B plus C plus D equals z. Right,
if Z is the good quarterback, he's at least part
of the quantitation. In terms of personality, he has it.
He has it in factor and if you think, well,
(02:38):
that doesn't really play a part if it's just dude.
Jay Cutler can throw a football, but everyone who played
with Jay Cutler seemed to hate Jay Cutler, and you
can tell me no, they didn't, but I can tell
you that when he was in Chicago, they took his
locker and had him dress outside the locker room because
they didn't like him. It's part of it. You have
to get guys to play for you and play with you.
(03:00):
He has that, But man does he run a lot.
And he's been hurt twice already. And when we saw
him stay in the pocket during his senior year in college,
he showed that he's not perfect. And when we've seen
him stay in the pocket in the NFL, he's not perfect.
(03:21):
But when you let him do both, he's pretty amazing.
The problem with doing both is it just doesn't have
a long shelf life. Right, he still doesn't really slide,
he still doesn't really avoid contact. He's still Here's what
Deshaun Watson is. What makes you will in fact break
you even when it's something amazing, It's it's Kobe. It's
(03:44):
the Kobe Bryant factor. Kobe Bryant was such an alpha,
such an had such an incredible mentality in terms of
believing that he could do anything in a basketball court
and no one could stop him. That it made him
really hard to live with, and it made it so
that he could never take uh a secondary or even
(04:05):
tertiary or worse role with the Lakers, because hey, look,
if you want to play with Kobe Bryant, you gotta
understand he wants to take those shots even when he
can't make those shots. What made Kobe Bryant great made
him so hard to deal with late in his career.
What makes Deshaun Watson incredible makes it hard to buy
in long term to Deshaun Watson, even if what makes
(04:27):
him incredible in the short term will play until he
gets hurt. There's no such thing in life. I have
a I have a friend who's an agent, right, we
all in this business have agents. And he's like, tell me,
this sixty year old agent, there isn't one. Just a
young man's game. You gotta get on a plane, you
(04:50):
gotta go to dinners, you gotta have drinks, you gotta smooze,
you gotta have great energy. Like once you get past fifty,
like it feels like it's over. Right, it feels like
it's over. It's the same with running quarterbacks, athletic quarterbacks.
And before you sit there and go Doug, that's a
(05:11):
connotation for the black quarterback. No, Steve Young, Steve Young,
you have to run around a lot. Steve Young's career
was cut short. But Steve Young is arguably the greatest
mobile quarterback in the history of the sport. And so
(05:31):
do I think DeShawn Watson is great. No. I think
he's great at what he does and fun to watch.
But no matter how many rules they put in place
to try and protect quarterbacks, they can only protect you
inside that pocket. At some point, mobile quarterbacks have to
go out into the real world and can't protect you
from the real world anymore. Right, quarterbacks are a lot
(05:55):
like private school kids or parents that don't let have
wheats in their house. Our first house when we moved
to Connecticut, I was six years old. To get a
job at ESPN and we just brought our first house
in Oklahoma City a year ago. Year before at done
local radio for a year, done games for a year,
(06:15):
got offered a job, went back and played in France
for a month and a half, came home, got offered
a job after doing the NBA Draft on ESPN Radio,
and got offered a job up there. Still got the
show Fox Sports Radio, and I never forget that there
was three girls that lived next door to us, and
we were kind of like trying to be like uncle's
and aunts. You know, my wife and I we had
(06:36):
no kids. We had two dogs, and our dogs would
were allowed to go down to their house and their
kids could come up and hang out our house, and
so they didn't feel like they had to have a
babysitter sometimes because we were just around and we were
frankly one in wanting to have kid mode and we
just like having kids. And they would come into our
(06:57):
house and go through our cabinets like little rats or
candy and sweets and anything that was a treat. Why
because their parents limited them. And it's the it's the
lesson that all parents learn is like, look, it doesn't
mean that you want to crack a beer with your
(07:17):
kid or have shots with your kids, but if you
completely shut them off to the real world, eventually the
real world will find them. And when they get to
the real world, you can't protect him from You gotta
teach them how to how to handle the real world. Well,
that's the same thing with the running quarterback. The thing
(07:38):
I've learned here in the last week is confirmation that
scattered reports are mostly accurate. Can guys improve, yes, hell yes,
they become have a higher football like you. They can
learn to work harder, to work smarter, all that stuff.
But like, look, I watched Geno Smith play the fourth
(08:00):
quarter for the Charge. I was liked, he was awful,
And then I go back and I remember Nolan Oracky
right in a scatterport that was dead to rights accurate.
Baker Mayfield, who I told Colin cow Heard last year, Like,
I like dudes, love playing for him, but he has
this thing where he feels like he has to engage
in every fight. He's basically got little band syndrome. He's
(08:23):
got engaged in every fight on the field, off the field,
doesn't matter. He never stands down. He always engages, and
that can rupt people the wrong way. Josh Rosen, if
you've heard any of his quotes, you've been around him,
he just has this way about him where he's really smart,
he's really talented. But man, I don't know if he
(08:43):
leads the locker room because he knows he's really smart,
really talented. And Deshaun Watson went where he went in
the draft not because he doesn't have that it factor,
but because within the pocket he's okay. Outside of the pocket,
he's magical. But outside of the pocket is like the
(09:04):
real world. We can't manage how many candy bars you
eat in the real world. When that kid, when that
private school kid goes to college, we can't manage how
let you stay up or if you eat right, or
if you study, you're you're on your own. And you
tell me where there's an old mobile quarterback. They just
(09:27):
they don't exist. And here's a guy to knee injuries
in who still can be magical. And I do believe
gives the Texans an honest shot on a shot at
winning the a f C on a shot because they've
had a defense, for a defensive front for years now.
They have a running game, you know, they got Nuke.
(09:47):
They they have a good wide receiver like but they've
had they had Andre Johnson, they've had Aryan Foster, they've
had a defense. The differences they have competent quarterback play
and a guy with an in factor that you want
to get behind. But long term buy in. When you're
better out of the pocket than you are in the
pocket in the NFL, that's cool, that's far and that
(10:08):
doesn't last for a long time. All right. Coming up next,
Lane Johnson joins the show, starting left tackle defending Super
Bowl champion Eagles. The Shakespearean quote is heavy as the
head that wears the crown. But why why, after all
those injuries they sustained last year, aren't they better this year?
(10:31):
We'll ask him next. Be sure to catch live editions

(10:55):
Fox Sports Radio. Today is Giving Tuesday. Are you familiar
with that Giving Tuesday? Dated for your charitable works or
you know, just drop a couple of pennies inside somebody's
hand who needs it. We'll catch up with Lane Johnson
is doing some great things to the Children's Hospital Philadelphia.
The defending Super Bowl champion left tackle of the Eagles
will join us momentarily. I did want to say this
(11:19):
about the Jacksonville Jaguars. We'll get this a little bit
later on the show. But Tom Coughlin went on a
local Jacksonville station and um, I think, while while making
some very very good points, all I don't know a
valid but what he believes like, he wasn't lying. He
(11:40):
did tell a tale which is old as time, which
is sometimes yet your result leads you to believe you're
closer then you actually are. In practice. Here here's Tom
Coughlin earlier today, whistle a world whistle. We're in the
Super Bowl, right, okay, and that's my position. Okay, so
(12:04):
tell me everyone out there what they're going to do
another that circumstance about your football team. You know what,
aren't you going to fill other pieces in and try
to be as good as you can be? And we tried. Yeah,
well the game got us and we go back to
the drawing board. They thought Tom Coffin thought he was
(12:24):
smarter than everybody else. That's what they did. Now listen,
we know where where this close to reach the support? Yeah, okay, look,
I will give it up. I will give it up
to the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, and I'll
tell you why. Doug Peterson wrote in his book about
(12:49):
the Jacksonville Jaguars. You know about playing scared that they
got the ball back fifty nine seconds ago in the
NFC Championship game with the lead, allbeat on the road,
and chose to take a knee. But they told you
in that very Doug Peterson nailed it what we all saw.
(13:10):
Nailed it that like, look, you've got a quarterback that
you believe in so much you're gonna give him a
contract extentially end the year. But you're not gonna give
him fifty nine seconds with a couple of time outs
to try and get three points. What are you doing?
So Peterson, Doug Peterson nailed it on Blake Portals and
(13:30):
the Jags. They're like everybody's telling like, hey man, world
is not that good, Like no, no, no, we got it.
We got it. We're good. Like well, Steelers probably should have.
Steelers could have beaten you. You know, Andrew Luck was hurt,
Deshaun Watson was hurt. Kansas City they had topped out
with Alex Smith. They got a better court, they're better,
(13:51):
Like look around the a f C. Like, I gotta
think that last year was your year, which you were
your result was better than your actual product. More on
More on Tom Coughlin and what led to them being
in such denial until yesterday over the quarterback position upcoming,
I mentioned that today is Tuesday of giving. No one
(14:13):
knows that better than Lane Johnson. He joins in the
Doug gott Leaves Show on Fox Sports Trade Adio. You
do uh touchdowns for Children's Hospital Philadelphia, right Lane? Yes,
there are so spicy. For every touchdown scored this season,
donations will go to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, something
I've been doing the past couple of years and just
(14:33):
overall for a great cause. Here's the part that was
has never been brought up. I don't understand why you
didn't get to throw the throw the Philly Special in
the Super Bowl. Like people who know Lane Johnson. When
you got to you were a quarterback. How come you
don't get to throw the pass on on Phi Philly Special? Um?
I think it's because, you know, since playing line, I
(14:55):
like to cast my thumbs up. So you know, a
lot of people get their thumbs broke or hands best
Sabbath they don't play for heavily spapped their hands. So
that's that's probably why I don't. But if I can
take that off though, I could get it done. I
know you could get it done. I'm I'm I was
half messing with you, Lane Johnson joining us on the
Doug Out the Show on Fox Sports Radio. You're a
guy that can can dish it out, but you can
also take it. So I know guys have been tweaking
(15:16):
you about, hey, we have more fun here with New England. Um,
what what what was that? What's the when you're playing
this year in the league. What's the general reaction to
your comments that you made during the offseason? And nothing? Really,
I just feel like, um, I've I've made a lot
of people angry and uh and I still make a
many a time I hear it about this, So I
(15:39):
feel like I've I've done my job. Is it Is
it in fact different when you're the champion? Like the
the shakespeare Shakespearean quote is heavy? Is the head that
wears the crown? Is it heavier? Is it harder? Is
it less fun when you're the defending champ instead of
scrapping to try and win that championship? I mean, the
season hasn't gone his plan, But as far as where
(16:01):
we're at, it's it's anybody's games. So uh. As far
as us and saying we have everything in front of us.
Um by really concerned with last year. I mean, it
was great to win it, but it also, um, I
think you got to focus in a little bit harder
on the next season. It's a you know, you're playing
a harder schedule and and by design that's has been
for you to not do as well. Yeah, I mean, like, look,
(16:22):
on paper, last year, you had those injuries, Carson obviously
didn't play in the playoffs or late in the season
in the super Bowl. On paper, you guys should have
been better. So why is it. Is it simply a
more difficult schedule or why is it that it's been
more difficult for you guys? Well's that I think you know,
there's nineteen people gone, you know, from last year's team
to this team, so um, you know, it makes it
(16:43):
a little bit of difference. You've got a quarterback coming
off of a c L injury only this you know,
second third year in the league, and so he's still developed.
Us still trying to come back from that. Um, new
parts on the old line. So um, you know, as
far as that's concerned, I think, you know, hopefully we
can reach our peak towards end the season and really
come on strong and trying to continue what we did
last game for us having a balance. We we as outsiders,
(17:07):
Lane Johnson tackle Philadelphia Eagles, defending Super Bowl champions, joined
us in the Doug Gotlup Show on Fox Sports Trade
a huge comeback win over the New York Giants this
past weekend, UH twenty two. As outsiders, we look and
we go like, hey, now only they lose guys, but
you lost some of that offensive you know, some of
the offensive brain trust, right, you know, you got one
(17:29):
guy goes and gets the head coaching job, another guy
goes and Frank Grank is doing a great job at indeed,
and then another guys call him plays in Minnesota. How
much of that has affected the product in the field. Oh,
that's the product of of of winning, you know after
every Super Well, it's that's how the league works. Creates opportunities,
spread the guys better for their families, and ultimately, uh,
(17:50):
you know, you have to regroup and and come back
to next year. So this is the first time we
ever happen to do that. We're learning, but at the
same time, I feel confident about the team before Uh,
you guys are down nineteen to three, and I thought
I'm watching this game with Brian Baldinger, who breaks it
breaks you guys down? Okay, Brian Balding from the NFL Network.
Lane Johnson training us and you guys shall not only
(18:11):
score go for two and get it, but you're down
nineteen to three and you you scored a sixth place
seventy five yard drives. Zach Orts catched that touchdown pass
from Carson. This is end of the end of the
first half this past weekend. Is that the drive? Is
that the drive that changes the season? Oh? Definitely. I
think as far as credent, energy and change at the
(18:33):
moment on the game, that was it and really going
up to um, you know, going up to half time,
we knew that we were created s moment, but just
needed capital wise and came out of different team the
second half, but really came back, made some some adjustments
and and uh, you know, probably had the best best
half of the season so far. Lane Johnson joining us
in the Doug Gotlips Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, didn't
(18:55):
Oklahoma used to play defense when you went to oh
you what what? What? What has happened there? Oh? I
mean it's always been a shootout. I mean they thought
the Western India game was bad this year. You know,
I think it was two s one something like that.
I know it was in the sixties, and so it
was putting us the same scenarigo. It's just the way
it is, man um. I mean, you're throwing the ball
(19:15):
every time. You got some of the best athletes, you know, quarterbacks, receivers,
and so you're gonna put up points. But yeah, it's
you know, it's definitely not a no Alabama defense or
anything like that. But still when you when you have
an offense like that, you can you can win a
lot of games. Yeah, it's it's been explained to me.
We had My Gundy on the show, Oklahoma States head
coach ester Lane Johnson the Eagles Oklahoma lum My. My
(19:37):
Gundy's explained to me in the past. He's like, look,
if you want to win in our league, you're you're
just not going to be able to stop people. Everybody
spreads you out. Everybody's got skill. It sometimes hurts us
in bowl games and in the College Football playoff, but
you have to understand that all these kids from Texas
and all these quarterbacks and these coordinators like this is
just it's a high possession, high volume of catches and touchdowns.
(20:00):
That's just kind of the way it is. Is that
a fair assessment of why it's so difficult to compete,
you know against SEC and maybe Big ten schools in
the ballgames. But you can't win your league if you
play the way that a A Michigan does, for example,
in the regular season. Yeah, I mean there's I mean
there's been years well colhomicide, DONA defenses and whenever they
do that, they you know usually you know up there
(20:22):
every year. Um, but I just think football has evolved
so much. It's all about speed. It's all about spreading
people out, having great schemes and real reads. It's there's
there's no stopping. It's just trying to slow down. And
those teams that have deep, good defenses here and you're
out usually people like Alabama, Cleps and stuff like that.
And uh, and I don't think for as recruiting, Um,
(20:43):
they're picking up you know, Oklahoma switched the Jordan brand.
That that's howful recruiting. And I think throw them open up,
you know definitely since I left school, uh, you know,
totally new locker room, everything's changed. Everything to stay at
the art so that's the Russian ahead. Doug gotlip show
Fox portray, that's the voice of Lane. Johnson joins us,
Let's let's circle back to your Eagles. You mentioned Carson
(21:04):
coming off an A c L injury, and I think
fans think that everybody's gonna be you know, a d
everybody's gonna be Adrian Peterson just bounce back and you're
here the same guy. The truth is, it does take time.
We've seen it take time for Deshaun Watson who suffered
an A c L injury, and and sometimes it it
it's you know, when you suffer the injury and how
bad the injury was. You're with this guy every day.
(21:25):
You've seen him since he started, he came back and
started playing the first couple of weeks of the season.
Is Carson back again? Just not you can't tell me
how he truly feels, but how he looks and how
it is to play with him. Do you think he's
completely back? I believe so, just just with how he's
attacked to rehab process. I means, you know, every day
this all season and I just feel like I had
(21:46):
of seasons going on. You know, he's taking hits um
and I thought he's his body's back where he can
do that and when he feels confident and really doesn't
have to worry about it. Black you said, though, I
mean it's uh, it was an ongoing process, you know,
going through the preseason, um, trying to get that rise.
So it's just you know, been along your form. Yeah.
He's also a guy who he didn't you know, like
(22:06):
he dove, but he didn't really slide. He's a big
old dude, right, he's he doesn't And quarterbacks they don't
want to be, especially young ones. They don't want to
act like they're soft and slide. But you know, don't
you at some point good grab and go like, hey, dude, listen,
we want you around here for a long time, so
slide or if we miss a block duck? Do you
have those conversations with him? He's smart. I mean you
(22:27):
really don't have to tell him, and he knows. He
knows what they're right saying. Uh, you know, he knows,
and that's something he's been working on, just you know,
being smart. There's times when when to make that play
and as times when to go down and let to
play another one. And uh, you know, he's a just
about the same time, he's a fine competitor, and uh,
you know that's what makes you so special. With Tom
Lane Johnson joining us on the Doug Gottlip Show here
(22:48):
on Fox Sports Radio. All Right, dude, h three of
your last five are on the road. You get two
shots at the Redskins and that means you know Colte
McCoy a couple of times here. Plus you get the
cowboys in the road, get to take on the Rams
who are puffing their chests out. Uh you know, because
what's what what's your assessment of what the one or
two things you guys need to do to make that
(23:10):
final push when the division you're getting the playoffs. We
gotta crab, big consistant. We're having Gas coming back from injury.
You know, our secondaries destimated with injuries. So you've got
DAAs coming back healthy. That'll be huge. And really, um,
just far us open the defense out the offenses at
state balance. We have to be able to run the ball.
That opens up everything in the game next everything easier.
(23:32):
So uh, just tend to keep that MOMENTU from this game,
I saw a lot of positives and stuff to grow
on and and move on from there. Lane's got a
great foundation. You got a pledge it dot org slash,
Lane Johnson, l A and E. Johnson. Lane Johnson touchdown
for Children's Hospital Philadelphia. Hey man, it's a Tuesday of giving.
You give your time so much the community. We appreciate
you giving us a couple of minutes of your time
(23:53):
here on Fox Sports Radio. Thanks for having me, man,
how to blas? All right, that's Lane Johnson joining us
on the Doug Gottliebs Show. Let's get you over to
Isaac Loewen Kron like what he got. Good afternoon, Dug,
Fox Sports. Bruce feldmannon, Sir, Not a good afternoon, however
for this guy. Bruce Feldon reporting the USC has now
(24:15):
fired offensive coordinator Team Martin. USC earlier parted ways with
defensive line coach Kennici. You DESI so to assistance down
and perhaps counting for USC um Isaac. I'm not trying
to interrupt him, trying to actually add to your report.
Did you see the Did you see the statement put
out by Lynn Swan going back a couple of days
(24:38):
ago when they announced that they were retaining um Clay
Halton Clay Helton, did you did did did you guys
read this that sigh is coming from me being a
usc alum not as a quote unquote broadcast, Lynn Swan said,
we know our deficiency in deficiencies in culture, disciplined schemes,
personnel and staff. Outside of that, Mrs Lincoln, how is
(25:01):
the show like? Look Brian Kelly? Basically his statement was this,
We're awful, but Brian Kelly was awful a couple of
years ago, and he's gonna play in the college while playoffs,
So play Hilton's Brian Brian Kelly. That's what That's basically
what the statement read, correct pretty much. Yeah, he could
have just issued a statement saying he's back allah the
Michael Jordan's statement in and that would have been it.
(25:24):
It's like Pat Williams, the former NBA executive, he said, well,
we can't win at home, we can't win on the road.
My big familing as a general manager is finding out
another place to play. Central Florida Cube Mackenzie Milton is
gonna have reconstructive surgery at a later time to repair
his right knee. Blood flow has been restored to his
right leg and his nerve is injured, but intact Milton
(25:44):
was injured in Friday Night's victory over South Florida NFL.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that Buccaneers quarterback Jamis Winston
has reached a settlement to end the sexual battery lawsuit
filed against him by an uber driver who accused him
of groping her in twif. The NFL suspended Winston but
the first three games of this season for violating the
Personal Conduct policy. The Viking was to play safety Andrew
(26:06):
Sandejo on injured reserve. He had missed the last six
games with a groin injury. And h L Tonight's discovered
card key matchup the Toronto Maple Leafs. So it's the
San Jose Sharks at seven thirty Eastern. And speaking of matchups,

(26:30):
great stuff. It's scary stuff about Mackenzie Milton. Awful, awful,
awful Mackenzie Milton, Hawaiian kid quarterback. I hadn't lost a
game in the last two years as starting quarterback UCF.
The knee injury was gruesome. And when you hear that
blood flow had been restored, that obviously, um um, that
(26:50):
obviously means that he had lost blood flow to that leg,
which I just I don't even know. I don't even
know how to how to express my sorrow for the kid,
but that that is an awful and gruesome injury, and
I do wonder. Look, I've been against guys sitting in
Bowl games and Mackenzie small so I think he probably
(27:12):
would have been a backup quarterback kind of like Chase
Chase Daniel. But you know, I was talking with some
NFL personnel people this weekend. They're like, I don't think
any of these guys playing the bad Bowl games. They
just don't. Just the sport is, you know, so incredibly violent.
I just don't think they do. And I don't think
it reflects great on the kids. But I actually, you know,
(27:34):
in some levels, you don't blame them. And it's weird
because I do. I like you to finish out with
your team, but it is such a violent game and
one play. But but but my, my, my takeaway that
is different than anybody else you're gonna hear on radio,
and what what you hear from people is well, that's
why players deserve every penny they get. Okay, that that's
(27:57):
a fair. Players want more because they're quote their career
could be over quickly. But that's also why teams are like,
you know, I can't put all my eggs into one
basket because one hit and the guy who I thought
I had I don't have forever, right, So it's it
(28:18):
is actually a double edged sword. Um, I'll tell you
what I struggled to go through to to process other
people going through a divorce. I'm very I'm very blessed
my um my parents were married for forty five years
until my dad passed away. My wife's parents have been
(28:38):
married for I think about forty five years now. I
think almost forty five years now as well. Um, I've
been married for eighteen and so when I hear tales
of divorce, like, I struggle with it. But I do
have friends that have gone through it, and so it's
(28:59):
something I've been able to process more and more. And
when I read this story from Cleveland, I understood a
little bit of why really why, um the previous staff
with the Cleveland Browns, why Hugh Jackson was easy on
(29:24):
his players in terms of discipline, first season offensive guy.
Offensive guys usually aren't disciplinarians. They're just not. Offensive guys
like to draw stuff in the dirt. They like that fun,
like to throw the ball down field like offensive guy's
happy guy. There's good cop, bad cop. Offensive guys almost
always good cop. Defensive guy is almost always bad cop. Right,
(29:44):
And I I'm a believer in discipline, but the media
will tell you that discipline is bad. I don't know
what happened with members of the media. I don't know
how people were raised, but we become so pro player
that any form of discipline him how is is over
the top. There is over the top discipline, but not
all forms of discipline over So I understand that Greg
(30:07):
Williams and his style and imploring discipline is one job
hazard because um, because he's a defensive coordinator, and two like, look,
it's what's needed to win football games. If you're not
held accountable football, baseball, basketball work, you don't hold people
(30:31):
work for you accountable, you have no chance of good leadership.
And there's a fine line there between between um, normal
appropriate discipline and going over the top. But but I
saw this j C. Treader said that we desperate quote
desperately needed Greg Williams discipline. UM linebacker Joe Schobert said
(30:57):
that Greg Williams quote has done a good job keeping
everybody refocused defensive end. Chris Smith pointed out no excuses policy.
By the way, these are all defensive guys who are
all brought in by Greg Williams. Greg Williams likes them.
They like Greg Williams, and they got Greg Williams back.
But J C. Traders in a center and he says
(31:18):
that teams crave discipline. I agree, they absolutely do. Anyone
who says otherwise hasn't been in the locker room like
guys like you. You want a tight ship. Nobody wants
shove at work and other guys are jagging around because
it makes me look bad and I can't get I
can't get my new contract. We don't win, I don't
(31:38):
look good. Nobody wants to be part of a losing product.
Trader said to Ohio dot Com it's something we desperately needed.
I think he's really rained everybody and got people focused
on one single goal. I think the leadership has been strong.
He fires the team, He's got that personality, the rules
in what's expected from each person, the team when it
comes to penalties and missed assignments and all these little
(31:59):
things spelled out for you, there's no confusion about what's
going on. But it also points to Hugh Jackson. Hey,
Hugh Jackson had a bad relationship with one the front
office who didn't hire him, like John Dorsey didn't hire him,
And to his offensive coordinator, uh Todd Haley, who John
(32:24):
Dorsey hired Hugh Jackson didn't hire. And what happens when
Hugh Jackson and Todd Haley aren't getting along. What happens
when parents aren't getting along they have kids. This is
what I learned. The parents try and win Curry favor.
They want kids a Curry favor with one of them,
(32:45):
so they're nice to them. So they buy them gifts,
they take them on trips. They get him a cell phone.
Wait wait, wait, she's seven and she has a rose
gold cell phone with a diamond encrusted case. You don't
think that's all over the topic. Well, you know, it's
been a tough time at home. Her mom and I
have been fighting. It's not good. I just thought it's
(33:07):
a way to show her we care, Like no showing
your you care is showing your care. That's just trying
to buy your love. Children crave discipline, they do they do.
Athletes crave discipline. You wouldn't be a professional athlete if
at some point in your life somebody hadn't taught you
the self discipline to work out, stay in shape, to
(33:28):
pay attention, and to get things done. I don't know,
Greg Williams is a long term solution. Sometimes short term
guy is the exact opposite. But I do know that
that's clear toxic relationship that had to be changed in Cleveland.
In that Hugh Jackson and probably Todd Hailey, but especially
(33:49):
Hugh Jackson, they weren't disciplining guys and it was because
he was trying to curry favorite with them. Simple simple,

your question, is the hokey Christmas music going away? The
(34:31):
answer is no, it's Christmas Time's holiday time. I'll just
give you can I give you an honest, like non
Christian Jewish perspective, It's okay to wish me a merry Christmas.
It's it's okay, like there are people like, oh, you know,
do I wish you marry Christmas because you're Jewish and
your wife's you know, like, yeah, dude, it's okay. You know,
(34:53):
we're good. We're good. We're not gonna argue, you know,
baby Jesus and and who is he really the son
of Like we're not arguing that. You're just it's basically
saying happy holidays to me. It's wishing me a happy
New Year. It's fine. I take it in the I
never understand people who don't take things in the spirit
in which they come from. Right, So, yeah, you can
(35:18):
wish you me marry Christmas. Doesn't it less than bothers me.
It means you're actually going like, hey, Chris John Romo's
merry Christmas, let's marry Christmas. Do Let's let's get to again.

Bell has chosen to sit out the eighteen seasons. You
(36:00):
stay fresh heading into free agency for nineteen. Earlier today,
Bell commented on an Instagram post about Colts quarterback Andrew
Luck throwing at least three touchdown passes in eight straight games, commenting, quote,
just imagine unquote with the eyeballs EMOJS, what are the
(36:21):
chances Bell signs with the Colts in the off season?
Five chance? Five? Like you know five? Like they've won
five games in a row, and they have a young
running back in Marlon Mack who they draft in the
second round two years ago, who's what already rushed for
(36:46):
uh fifty six yards this year. Um, I just I
don't see them spending money in the off season when
they need to sprinkle around and continue to acquire skill
position guys on one guy, right, they got jordanville Kins,
they got Um, they had the Hines kid as well. Yeah,
I'd say five percent chance they lean bell trying to
(37:07):
stir up interest. Like yeah, no, no, not happening. Five
from the Colts end because of the colts and not bells,
And perhaps it would have been more realistic. Heady posted
had just imagined comment on an Instagram picture of maybe
the shrimp cocktail. It's saint almost steakhouse in Indianapolis, that
would have been more likely to happen. It's really spicy.
Is it good? That's my question. I don't know. I've
(37:27):
never had it before. That's what I want to know
from you. Okay, So here's the deal. When you go
to Indie, you go there's a steakhouse called St. Elmo's
and yes, their steak is phenomenal, but they're known for
this uh shrimp cocktail. The sauce is crazy, crazy spicy,
loaded up with horse riders. So I think it's more
memorable than it is good. It's still good, but it's
(37:49):
more memorable than it is good. I'll stick to shake
a steak and shake next time I'm over there, which
is Catty corner to it. That's all right, it's all centralized.
I love downtown Indianapolis. Yesterday we found out that the
Jacksonville jack Wars are sitting Blake Bordles in Week thirteen
against the Colts in favor of Cody Kessler. What are
the chances Bordles, who was the starting quarterback in the
a f C championship game just last season, never starts
(38:12):
another game for Jacksonville. I'd say there's a sixty chance
he doesn't start another game, right, Like, you don't make
a quarterback in offensive coording your change and start a
guy for one game. So it's probably a two or
three game thing. But there is a chance of injury
or this chance he gets one more shot. We thought
Jamis Winston was done. Then James Winston came back and
(38:33):
he just won this past Sunday. So I'm gonna go
six chance we've seen the last of Blake Bortles. I
do think it's likely, but not definite. Tonight, the College
Football Playoff Committee will release another set of rankings ahead
of championship weekend. Now after Michigan's lost to Ohio State.
This past weekend, the a P pole has the top
six as Alabama, Clemson, notre Name, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.
(38:57):
So what are the chances Alabama gets into the College
Football Playoff even if they lose in the SEC title
game to Georgia? Nine eight percent chance. That's the world
when you're Nick Saban and you're running things. No, they're
just they're there. I don't like think they want to
(39:19):
try and find the four best teams. They're one of
the four best teams and you know you lose the
championship game. Hell, I think Georgia should go even if
they lose a close game. To be honest with you,
george has been better all season than Ohio State has
in Oklahoma has They won't, but Alabama will go if
if they don't win. Speaking of Ohio State, what are
the chances the Buckeyes continue their run into the College
(39:42):
Football Playoff and win the national championship? Like in UM,
the chances are decent. I would say chance. Uh see,
I think Alabama wins. I think Ohio State gets in
and they'll face off with Ohio of State, and I
think they are one of two teams that have the
(40:03):
talent to match up with Ohio State and they quality
quarterback play. When Dwayne Haskins gets gets time to throw
the football, I think it is game time. On The
Duck Godli Show, what do you guys think of the
Booger mobile thing? Do you like the Booker mobile thing?
Have you seen the memes of Booger Mobile? It's pretty funny.
(40:26):
It's actually way better than the Booger Mobile actual video
where they have him like driving down the street instead
of on the sidelines. Pretty amazing stuff. I touched on
this a little bit earlier, but there's a reason that
Jags have fallen off this season, and obviously everybody's paying
the board point the bordles. Some people are are pointing
(40:46):
to their offensive coordinator. Like there's a lot that goes
into it. But there's a parallel here. In all sports.
It's called the too much too soon syndrome tom much
too soon syndrome. I believe Jacksonville is a victim of
too much too soon syndrome. Tell you what the symptoms

(41:31):
better today than Blake Bortles. Right, Blake Bortles yesterday pulled
the starting quarterback, offensive coordinator fired. And so there are
changes abound in Javil, changes abound so much to get
to man um, but I want to look. There's a
(41:53):
it's called too much too soon syndrome. And what happens
in sports is we get so caught up in stories,
so caught up in stories that sometimes we actually lose
sight of how good somebody is. So we do so
caught up in stories. And this happens with the Heisman Trophy,
(42:15):
this happens with um surprise teams in the n c
A Tournament, Major League Baseball, the NFL. College football. We
look up in A and A and a down trodden
program has a breakthrough year, and we we freak out.
We freak out, But instead of freaking out, we understand that,
(42:37):
like really really really good teams don't just do it once.
They do it a bunch of times, but in the
in the moment, it feels real, it feels sustainable. Sometimes
it's too much, too soon. The Oklahoma City Thunder got
to the NBA Finals and they weren't ready. They won
(43:05):
one game, they got embarrassed. That was Lebron james first
NBA championship was not actually against the best team in
the Western Conference. It was like one of the things
that no one ever says about Lebron and his first
championship with Miami um is that they should They were
(43:29):
the most talented team, but it was just way too young,
way too young, and they upset the San Antonio Spurs,
And it was a year in which it was just
a really really really strange year for the NBA, in
a strange year for Lebron. You go back to the
two thousand and eleven two thousand and twelve NBA season,
(43:55):
It was the second year of the Big Three of
Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Chris Bosh, their second year together,
and you're like, huh, what was weird about that year? Well,
if you remember, that was a lockout shortened year, right,
they only played sixty six games, and so while they
(44:19):
they beat the Oklahoma City Thunder and one in the
NBA championship. The Thunder weren't actually the second best team
or the best team in the West. They had an incredible,
incredible series against the Spurs which allowed them to get
to the finals, and when they got to the finals,
(44:39):
they got exposed. And frankly, that was the series before
the summer when James Harden was traded and what happened
with Oklahoma City is they thought, hey, they thought the opposite.
We might not be as good as as what we accomplished,
(45:02):
and we might never be good enough because James Harden
wants too much money. And if you remember, back then,
you had to have two big guys to win a
championship because you had to go through the West, and
the West had the Spurs with two big guys, and
more importantly, they had the Lakers that had Andrew bind
(45:23):
Him who missed that year Andrew bind Him and Pau
Gasol and and while now you don't really need any
big guys, back then they had Kendrick Bigott traded for
Kendrick Perkins. And they also had oh man, what's his
name is in Toronto? Now? I can't remember his name?
Um Sergebaca, Like, why did they care about having two
(45:48):
big guys so much because you used to have them,
have to This is only five or six years ago.
I used to have him in order to compete. But
but the Thunder, when you get to the NBA finals,
it increases all the attention on what you're doing and
hardens lack of desire to buy in and not go
(46:09):
out to the clubs during the finals, his lack of
desire to take a hometown discount. The Thunder freaked out
and end up trading away James hard. We've seen this
in baseball, where teams that aren't expected to get to
the World Series get to the World Series and think
they're really a World Series team. It increases not just
(46:31):
your own thought of how good you are, but the
expectations of your fan base, the expectations of the league. Yeah,
there was why can't you get there again? The Jaguars
had drafted in the top five, top ten of the
draft seemingly for fifteen straight years. Eventually they had to
figure it out. And and if you think back till
(46:54):
last year, were they good. Yeah, they're good defensively, but
they also were in a divisi Jean where Marcus Mariotta
was hurt Andrew Luck was hurt. Deshaun Watson was hurt.
Those are the three starting quarterbacks in your division. Combine
that with an easy schedule and with the a f
(47:16):
C being a little bit soft, right. I told you
guys last year, sat in this chair, and I said,
Baltimore should have been the playoffs. The Chargers should in
the playoffs. Baltimore choked. Plus fact Flacco at the start
of the year was coming off of back injury and
wasn't good. So Baltimore choked, and the Chargers choked with
their kicking game. That's why they started out what was
(47:37):
it owen for? Right? But the Chargers were one of
the top six teams in the f C and the
Ravens were one of the top six teams in the FC.
So you take away two playoff teams and then you
got Kansas City, who I kind of we all knew
the ceiling with Alex Smith, and you really only had
(48:00):
three possible competitors to other possible competitors to get to
a Super Bowl. Your division has no healthy starting quarterbacks.
That's like almost six guaranteed wins plus your talented So
they end up getting to an an f C championship
game against the Patriots team which had as little talent
(48:22):
as any that's ever reached the Super Bowl, and they
lead at the half and they lose the game. And
so this year they kind of get exposed. Here's Michael
Lombardi yesterday, former general manager of the NFL, on why
the Jaguars fell apart. We lose sight of this. We
think that the Jaguars are in the stellar franchise that
(48:44):
have had been a consistent model of winning. And yet
in thirteen they won three games, and fifteen they won
five games. In sixteen they won three oh and seventeen
they only won ten. They didn't dominate. Yeah, they played
well in Pittsburgh and played well for three quarters in
New England, but they only want time games. Remember in
seventeen they lost to the Forts badly in San Francisco,
(49:05):
and this year they're three and eight. So, like, I think,
we've kind of gotten carried away a little bit. How
good these these Jaguars are. Go over their draft picks stuck.
Look at their draft picks. I mean they trade Fouler away,
They've got nothing for him. I mean, look at some
of the players that they're not able to have had
top picks in those rounds that I've been able to
cash it off so accurate. Here's Tom Coughlin on a
(49:27):
Jacksonville radio station. We were a whistle, whistle, a whistle.
We're in the super Bowl, right, okay, And that's my position,
right okay, So tell me everyone out there what they're
going to do another that circumstance about your football team. Yeah,
you know what, aren't you going to fill other pieces
in and try to be as good as you can be?
And we tried. Yeah, well, the nature of the game
(49:49):
got us and we go back to the drawing board
and the nature of the game. No, you got exposed
to be exactly we thought you were. Is that what
he thought? We had games? We had games even last
year where they managed Blake Bortles. They didn't let him
throw the football. They didn't want him to make the
big mistake because they didn't trust Blake portals. I sat
(50:13):
here week five of last season. I don't need God
as my witness because I got John Ramos, who's got
a specially direct line to God. I got Ryan Music,
and you guys got the tapes. Guys, did I say
they should trade for Eli Manning? Five weeks in the season,
they say that music. They say that wrong, say that
(50:34):
And my logic wasn't that Eli Manning was great. It's
that nobody thinks Blake Portles is any good and Manning
is somebody that Tom Coffin will trust, and that's all
they needed. And they they fooled themselves, and they fooled fans,
and they fooled some of the media thinking, you know what,
Blake Bortles had turned the corner and he was better,
and like, no, he's not. The division had no healthy
(50:56):
quarterbacks none. They had a last place schedule. Now you've
got all healthy quarterbacks to Shaun Watson's healthy, Andrew Lux healthy,
Marcus Mariota is healthy, and you have a first place schedule.
And that's what happens too much, too soon for them
to realize you're not actually playing against good teams. You're
playing against teams backup quarterbacks, and backup quarterbacks are backups
(51:18):
for a reason. Daniel Jeremiah joins the show. Up coming
next I'm gonna ask him about the Jags is it fixable?
Plus I'm gonna ask him about the Chargers. Uh, finally
look dominant over an Arizona team that fell on its own.

(52:21):
on the Chargers Radio network and inferior broadcast to the
one that being Brian Baldinger did just just one or
two broadcast gass booths over um okay, look, I was
blown away by the fact that the Cardinals just decided
to quit early on the first in the second half,
Like I hadn't. I hadn't seen that one before, especially
with the rookie quarterback, Like, why have Josh Rosen play?
(52:42):
If you're not gonna let Josh Rosen play, just let
him get back there, get rid of the ball quickly
so the pass rush doesn't affect him, and and let
him learn a little bit. But um, after trailing tend nothing.
It was a really impressive performance by the Chargers. Should
I be impressed or was it simply a terrible team
that they beat up on not? It gets a little
bit of both. I don't think you go one way
(53:02):
or the other. Now that's that's not a talented football
team in Arizona. It's not an inspired football team. I
don't think that's up for the bag. But uh, that
being said, I think you watch that from a Charger standpoint.
Obviously rivers with what he did. Um, but just a
variety of weapons that were on displaying Kiro Williams. I
don't know if he even got targeted in this game. Um,
who's a good player. Uh So you just look at
(53:22):
charges can go in so many different directions. I love
it when they can team now involved in the slot,
that's gonna that's a nightmare matchup for teams. Um, and
then you flip it over to the defensive side of
the ball and you see botha looking like he's he's
right back into form. So that's a major difference maker,
Doug when I when I look at that team and
you get in third downs and you know, you're you're
(53:43):
doing the same thing I'm doing. You're sitting there and
you're you're calling the game and you look on the
field and you see fifty four lined up next to
ninety nine and then you see thirty three walk down
like he's gonna blitz. That's a lot of athletes you
can throw at an offense. Yeah. Um, they ran. It
looked like kind of like a double verse to Melvin Gordon,
and my my defense of it is, who knew Robert
(54:05):
kim diets you would choose that play to play hard
right and end up tackling he talk tackled Eckler, who
would already pitched the ball and leg whips Melvin Gordon. Gordon,
I would guess, doesn't play this weekend. But should they
be running reverses when they're up thirty five ten? Yeah?
You know, Look, you could tell Rivers was frustrated with it,
uh after it happened then in hindsight, but you know,
(54:28):
I mean, you don't need to be uh that creative
at that point in time in the game. I think
it was whatten or even it was ten, whatever it was,
it was over, I mean, with with what the Cardinals
were doing, and then the Charge were able to do
whatever they wanted, running the football straight ahead, throwing the
ball in completion. So um, I don't know that you
needed to dust that one off at that point in
time in the game. But on the other hand, you
(54:49):
can't anticipate that you're gonna get an injury on it.
You know, maybe a negative play, but you're not anticipating
the injury. Yep. I I tend to agree with you,
you know. I'm it felt like an occuus play. Probably
not need to play and hopefully it doesn't appear to
be serious, but it could affect their playoff seating, could
affect them going forward. They gotta it's a weird thing
here because they got Pittsburgh. Then you come home in
(55:10):
a winnable game, what is the Cincinnati or yeah, and
then and then you go to Kansas City on a
Thursday night, short week, so he might not see him
until until Kansas City. Dana Jeremiah joining us on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Your thoughts on Pittsburgh, Your thoughts on
Pittsburgh and that loss to the to the Broncos, who
you saw steal a game in l A the week before. Yeah,
(55:31):
you know, if Denver's talent has been better than the
record this year, They've been in some close games with
really really good football teams and then you know, you
can say the Chargers blew the game if you want to,
but it doesn't matter. They went on the road and
they gotta win against the Chargers, who are a good
football team. And then they're right there at home and
didn't win over Pittsburgh. So that's good wins back to back.
They've got a great pass room stud He's he's been outstanding,
(55:55):
so they can run the football case. Kingdom's protecting the
ball better. UM. So they're a dangerous team. Now. The
question is did they do what the Chargers did last
year and just dig themselves too deep of a hole
to climb out of? Um. But I don't look at
that game and say, you know, have Pittsburgh just a
laden egg? I would say, you know that Denver is
a good team. But in all these NFL games, Doug
red zone defense is so huge. I've seen, I've seen it.
(56:18):
You know what. The Chargers win some games because the
red zone stops. And you saw the two turnovers inside
the five yard line. Uh in that game. That's the
difference in the ballgame data. Jeremiah joining us in the
Doug Gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, all right,
let's let's get to Jacksonville. They decided to blow this
thing up offensively. Um, Like, were they just foolish? Did
(56:38):
they not see it? I mean, we all seem to
believe that Blake Bortles wasn't anything great, but they did
cover up his worts for a year. How do we
get to this point in Jacksonville? Well, I think you
just you mis calculate. You you miss calculate, trying valid
The rest of us from the outside can see it
(56:59):
because we did and invest the top picking him and
you you we said last year for the most part,
that team's winning in spite of Blake Bortles, not because
of him. But obviously they made a different assessment and
it turns out was the wrong assessment. Sometimes things are
obvious for a reason. He's not good enough. He's just
simply not good enough. And the other part of it is,
you know that the bar was so high for them defensively,
(57:22):
and they were out standing last year, but to expect
that may turnovers and defensive touchdowns and short fields, um,
that the gifts that just kept on coming for that
offense courtesy that defense, you can't you can't count on
that year in and year out, and and we've seen
that this year. And and for net getting hurt right,
for getting Robinson was big. Now Cam Robinson injury was
(57:45):
big left. So you lose your left tackle, you lose
your running back. And oh yeah, here's another thing I
brought up earlier. Deshaun Watson got hurt, Andrew Luck was hurt,
and Marcus Mariotta was hurt. Like that six games playing
against backups, playing its backups. It's a completely different league,
and you're playing against backup quarterbacks. And it's also a
different league when you're playing a first place schedule. Yes, yes,
they played last place schedule, last place schedule last year.
(58:08):
So what do you do. You still he signed an extension,
You still got money dead money for next year, and
they draft a kid like what do they do. I
think they've got a draft one, and I think they're gonna,
you know, find themselves picking relatively high um to to
get that accomplished if they want or you know, to me,
the number one option is I'll try everything. I could
just see if I forgot a way to get take
(58:28):
Bridgewater in there, um, that would be my first choice.
We'll see what happens with that whole situation. But they
have to get somewhere that the answer is not in
their building, not not Cody Kessler. Uh you know, I
just hope you know, look, we'll see how he does
over these So you can't talk yourself into that. Yeah,
So why would they make the Cody Kessler move? Is
this to save the locker room? Is that it that
(58:49):
the locker room has turned on Boordles? Because if you
have a new offensive coordinator, why not see how he
works with with With Bordles, I just think you can't
at some point in time, you can't look your team
in the face and say we're trying to win football
games and we're trying to get our best guys out
of the field and say, you know, hey, at this
point in time, I don't know if he can play
is a better option than I know he can't play,
you know, and that's what they've decided to do. Daniel
(59:11):
Jeremiah joining us on the Doug Otlib Show on Fox
Sports Radio. What do the Baltimore Ravens do? They won
two in a row and Lamar obviously looks like the
freak athlete we thought he could running the football, but
it was also against two the worst teams in the NFL.
What do you do? I think they're gonna ride with
it for a while here until he, uh, you know,
proves he can't win a football game. So it might
(59:32):
not be pretty, it might not be easy on the eyes,
but you know, I think from a defensive standpoint, with
with Joe Flacco just kind of being a sitting duck
back there, I think that Lamar Jackson and the threat
of him even running. Look what they've done on the
ground with Gus Edwards doing what he's doing, So just
the thread of him running, plus when he does take off,
(59:52):
it's something you've got to worry about defensively. And I
don't think there's a lot of playmakers on that football
team that's outside of Lamarch action that that were you
So I just think they stick with him until it's
just the passing and the accuracy becomes such a liability
that they can't afford to stay with it. But so
far that hasn't been the case. That's the voice of
(01:00:12):
Daniel Jeremiah, who joined us here on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Download his podcast Move the Sticks. We had Lane Johnson
on earlier today, and I wonder they had a great
drive at the end of the first half. They were
trailing nineteen to three. They score, they go for two,
they come back, they win the game. Does that turn
the tide? Does that get them? Because it feels like
(01:00:33):
the Cowboys have figured some stuff out. The The Eagles
have two games against the Redskins as well as on
the road against the Cowboys and on the road against
the Rams. Have the Eagles figured it out? Are they
still kind of wondering? Well, they've still got holes, They've
got roster holes. Uh. But when I look at the
kind of the nucleus of the team and the core
of that team, and I look at the way they
(01:00:55):
are set up defensively up front, and I look at offensively,
they get healthy that offensive line, they can win games,
and the terms in the quarterback plays. Well, they've they've
they've got a shot to win a lot of games.
Now they have injuries and they've got major concerns in
the back end when they play you know, legit top
tier teams. But you look at the you know, they
had three straight division games, they won the one against
(01:01:16):
the Giants. UM. Now I believe they get what the
Redskins this week, followed up by the Cowboys. So they
win these next two games, they're gonna be They're gonna
be in first place in the division. And I don't
know how you can say they can't pull that off. Yeah,
I don't either. What do you make of what Baker
Mayfield said, You know, I'll give you quickly kind of
my take it. I'm not saying that he's wrong, okay,
But one, I don't think he was talking about him
(01:01:38):
personally in terms of I think he wanted a quarterback
the year before UM and Hugh didn't pick the offensive
coordinator that he that ultimately led to him getting fired.
But I'm not saying that Baker is even wrong. But
it's not something that when you're the quarterback, you say
right that there's a certain level of decorum, which it
may You know, it may be lame for fans to
(01:01:59):
think they don't want to hear, but it's what's supposed
to be said. When you're the leader of a franchise.
What do you take when you hear him him him
call out Hugh Jackson the way he did. Yeah, two
thoughts on number one. I think the reason for the
for for him being upset, not not the reason for
what he said, but the reason for him being upset
twofold when when Hugh Jackson we all got to see
(01:02:20):
it on hard no gratulated him. I wanted the number
two job. That was ridiculous. And then the second thing
is when Hugh left and he told on his media tour,
was telling people we didn't get the quarterback playing well
enough and basically kind of penned him losing his job
on Baker Mayfield. So that's where the strained relationship comes from. Now,
should he have said what he said? You know, I
(01:02:41):
think from an outside perspective and everybody outside that locker
room and outside that organization, it looks kind of Yeah,
it's just petty. It's just not something you do as
the leader of the franchise. It's supposed to be the CEO.
You know, I say all those same things and and
I hear it, but just with my own personal experience,
Doug being inside that organization, Um, it's just kind of
like something goes wrong and it's it's a real weird vibe,
(01:03:03):
but so woe is me. It's a it's kind of
a victim uh type of atmosphere there, and he's kind
of flipped it all and he's been aggressive and cocky
and brash and uh and just kind of I said,
it's kind of like a screw you mentality that that
he's operating with. And now it's gonna it's gonna upset
a lot of people around the around the league and
the meeting and all that. But I guarantee it plays
(01:03:24):
well in the locker room in any organization. Yeah. That
that his act always plays well un locker. And that's
why I tried tell Cowherd, which is like, look, I
think he's different than other guys and that he does
understand how to win the locker room. I don't know,
you know, long term or complete upside if some some
that times that brash, braggadocious, he tries to force things.
You know, it's the old it's the old top gun
(01:03:47):
line right, like his egoes right and checks that his
body bodycat cash. There's a little bit of that to him.
Let me ask you about Deshaun Watson. I think he runs.
I think he does a great job of taking over
the locker room. But I watched him run around last
night and I think I love him. But this never
ends well for these quarterbacks. Um, what when you watch
(01:04:07):
Deshaun Watson play, what do you think? Well, I think
there's the I think there's reckless moments. I don't I
think the difference between him and and we'll see if
that's a small sample size. You know, people like to
compare with Lamar Jackson's doing to to Deshaun Watson. I
don't think that Deshaun Watson is reckless all the time.
First of all, he's a much better pass or that's
that's that's irrefutable. But the concern, you know, is can
(01:04:29):
you physically hold up? And I see him go for
long stretches where he is, Um, he is smart and
safe with taking care of himself. And then there's just
a few reckless moments a game. It might be the
other night of you know, three or four in the
one game earlier this year there was ten or eleven
where he was just you know, were not going out
of bound and taking huge shots on the sideline. So
(01:04:50):
I think you have to constantly reinforce that. I have
hope that he's gonna um, he's going to continue to
get better in that area, but it's always going to
be a concern. He just man, he's he's he's ultracompetitive,
and he doesn't have the build, you know, like like
a Cam Newton or Josh Allen Uh to play quite
that reckless. We've gotten to this point where when something
(01:05:10):
goes wrong for the package, it's all Mike McCarthy's fault, right,
It's all completely all his fault. And they were a
couple of throws there from Aaron Rodgers where he almost
seems like he doesn't love the play call. And I
don't know, like I'm not sitting to hears tell you
he throws it away on purpose, but his fundamentals aren't
(01:05:31):
great on some throws and he receives no blame. We
we all believe we know how it's gonna end, but
why is it in this place? And we actually watched
them play, well, you know, I I want to go
to the fundamentals because that that, to me is interesting
because he makes them unbelievable throws under durest where he's
kind of goofy footed, he's off balance, he's fading away,
(01:05:53):
is both of his feet are off the ground. Um,
nothing you would ever teach, but you kind of admire it.
Just that he has the talent in the situations to
make those type of throws. He's gotten to the point
where he's he's he's so poor fundamentally when he's got
a clean pocket. Um, he's missing some throws because of it.
And I think people are scared to criticize him for
it because we've seen so many unbelievable throws and you'll
(01:06:15):
see unbelievable throws even in these games. But he can't
have the two, two or three misses that he had,
which you just you just can't miss those throws. So
he definitely deserves some of that blame. But I'll also
tell you, Doug, Um, you know, great offenses have scheme
and skill, um, and I don't know that they have
either in abundance. Dante Adams pretty good though, right, No,
(01:06:37):
he's great and running and running back there pretty good. Okay,
they're Okay, at running back. I think when you look
at who that second option is in the receiver game,
that got some young players. Um, it doesn't. It doesn't
ultimately scare me when you're looking at that. Jimmy Graham
has been a lot more name than than uh than
player in the last few years. So I don't know.
(01:06:58):
I mean, like I said, that's good. It's a good group.
It's not an elite group. And I think scheme wise
is very vanilla. That's that's that's fair. Do the Patriots
have the dudes to win this thing or at least
get to the Super Bowl? I'll ever bet against them
and just watch. I mean, the bill can advantage they've
had in that crappy division for so long. I mean,
(01:07:20):
at least the a f C. I can promise you
that because it allows them to kind of find their
groove without losing football games. And now you get to
the point where the games really matter and and you've
gotta go through you gotta go through them. Now we'll
see if Kansas City can hold onto their advantage, um
and and get home field advantage. But it's looking like
New England probably at worse, you can end up being
a two seed. And I've seen it too many times
(01:07:42):
where even as the two seed, you'll see somebody going
there and upset Kansas City and low behold, they'll be
at home, uh to get to the super Bowl, and
you never bet against them there. So they're slowly but
surely figuring it out and everybody else is chucking it
all over the place. And that when everybody goes one direction,
Bill Belichick goes the other and and Sony Michelle being
being healthy and running back gives him a chance to
be a power run game, which shortens the game and
(01:08:05):
and puts the ball in their quarterback's hands at the
end of the game, which which seems to have worked
out for them for the last Doug is just look,
when we get into these big games, is it all
comes down to red zone production? Can you can you
stop people in the red zone? And you can you
can do your red zone And even though he's not
the same guy he was, Bronk is still the best
(01:08:25):
red zone weapon. Brady's probably the best red zone the
red zone decision maker. No Belichick has proven over a
lifetime he's the best defensive coordinator in the red zone.

What Have I missed? The Tampa Bay Times reports the
(01:08:47):
Buccaneers quarterback Jamis Winston reached a settlement and the sexual
battery lawsuit filed against him by a Scott's Dale, Arizona
uber driver who accused him of groping her in The
NFL S has spended Winston for the first three games
of this season for violating the Personal Conduct Policy, and
the vikings to play safety Andrew Sendejo on injured reserve.
(01:09:08):
He's miss the last six games with a groin injury.
In college football, Another Hour and other USC football assistant
coach is out. Scott Wolf of the l A Daily
News reporting the USC tight ends coach Carry Colbert has
now been fired. USC today has also fired offensive coordinator
(01:09:28):
Team Martin and defensive line coach Ken Echiu Desi and
Central Florida quarterback Mackenzie Milton is going to have reconstructive
surgery at a later time to repair his right knee.
Blood flow has been restored to his right leg and
his nerve is injured but intact. Milton, of course, was
injured in Friday Night's victory over South Florida. As I
(01:09:50):
continue to refresh Twitter to find out apparently which team
has claimed Reuben Foster on this is an important distinction, absolute, No,
not just the team, but it's there's a bunch of
things that are important here to realize. Okay, Now, I
don't know if Ruben Foster, either this time or the
previous time, laid his hands on this woman. It is
(01:10:12):
in fact the same woman, Okay. So, and this is
just days after she recanted, which means she took back
her initial claims of abuse against Reuben Foster. So she
calls the cops. She had a scratch on her shoulder.
It said her shoulder, and she said that he got
into an argument and he hit her and scratched her shoulder.
So the cops took him in and he was released
(01:10:35):
almost immediately by the San Francisco forty Niners. And I
understand the forty Niners are sitting there going like, look,
we don't know what happened. We just don't have the
time and the ability for due process. We don't you're
involved once you know you're involved, twice, like we just
we can't, we just can't, can't do it. But this
is a really really important thing that I want you
(01:10:57):
to take away. So so don't ever, ever, ever, ever
quote me as saying I'm okay with the abuse or
anybody laying a hand out a woman, because I'm not.
And it has nothing to do with the fact that
I'm a husband or the father of two young girls. No,
it's I'm a human being, I understand. I agree with
Mike Gundhi and what he said yesterday when he came
(01:11:17):
on our show, and he said, like, look, we tell
our guys because I asked him about the Tyreek Hill thing,
and we tell our guys that if a woman gets
mad at you, she takes a sway at you, she
knows this cell phone at you, you run away as
fast as you can. That's what he told us, that
that is their policy, and I agree with it because
(01:11:39):
there is no winning there. And whether or not Ruben
Foster struck this woman didn't strike this going or whatever
like you just obviously once she makes a claim, you
can't be with her. This is not a relationship that
is bound to last, in my opinion. In in in
two thousand eight. Here's my Gundhi yesterday on the show,
(01:12:00):
and I asked him about Tyreek Hill based on what
I found out that he got in a situation and
got in a heated argument with a girl, and he
made mistakes. You can't you. Here's what we tell our
guys here, Doug. If a girl gets mad at you
and hits you, scratches you, kicks you, grows her phone
at you, embarrasses you, what you do is turn around
and run away and run as fast as you can.
(01:12:22):
Don't touch her, leave her alone, don't push her back.
I don't care if she does it in front of
your boys, Okay, then you turn around and leave. He
didn't do that, and unfortunately, what that's what we tell
our players. If you do anything other than that, then
you can't play here. This is just the way it is.
But he he he learned his lesson. He's doing terrific.
(01:12:43):
Forget being a player, He's doing great on and off
the field. Yeah. So the idea is this, like I
don't know what happened. You know what happened, and what's
gonna happen is Ruben Foster whoever claims him somehow, Well,
we've explained to do it, and I'm sure their explanation
is like, look, yeah, if if he laid his hands
on her, we don't want him. But if he didn't,
(01:13:05):
and it's a false accusation by a woman who made
a previous which, as she even said, false accusation, then
he becomes the victim in this. I have a hard
time with two things because I know a lot of
you are sitting there, you're driving around, You're going like, dude,
(01:13:25):
I just can't believe a woman would make false accusations. Correct,
I don't either, But I also have a tough time
believing any any man who almost lost his entire career
over putting his hands on a woman, would lose his
career over a second time putting his hands on a woman.
Like the whole thing is just hard to imagine. So
let's breathe then breathe out, and maybe we'll get at
(01:13:48):
least a fraction of the truth coming up now because
I have seen where he you know, he started. He
served a suspension, but it's for marijuana possession, Like, alright,
if he had marijuana and California and be legal, Like
I'm not I'm not a moralist here, but I he's
(01:14:08):
not serving suspension for putting his hands on her because
she re can't the testimony. So either she'd lied to
cover up for him the first time and then he
did it again and he's a complete idiot and should
never play football again, or like this is her kind
of go to lie, or maybe it's somewhere in the middle.
I don't know, but I understand your knee jerk, which is,
(01:14:29):
how could they possibly pick up Reuben Foster? Like maybe
they just we just want to get the truth first.
I will say this, and this was told to me,
what with the routen Foster. The initial thing is like,
this is one of the reasons why that pre draft
process where they go into your background check you out,
(01:14:50):
is incredibly important, incredibly important because no one congratulates you
on when you get a guy with baggage that figures
out life. But no one says like, oh, you know,
you took a guy that was that had a tough background.
You made it work, you figured it out, you put
(01:15:11):
them around people like nobody ever says congratulations. On the
other hand, if you're the guy who drafts the guy
or signs the guy that runs into trouble and that
has a trouble past and the dysfunctional background. That's what
gets you fired. But let's we we we were a
country of laws or a country that has finally figured
(01:15:32):
out to rightfully have respect for women. On the other hand,
part of the laws and respect for women is let's
figure out exactly what happened before we go. I can't
believe the NFL is signing a woman beater two days
after he beats a woman. Let's breathe here, just for
a second. Chris Brussar thinks Odell Beckham Jr. Has the

odd Couple Christophers sorry, Rob Parker, Love Rob Parker, hate
half this takes but I love Rob Parker here and
then Christoper sorry, had this to say about Odell Beckham Jr.
Criticizing his head coach over the play calling. I got
(01:16:55):
no problem whatsoever with what oh b J said. But
generally on a bad team you always say what Rob,
Nobody's is untradeable. No, the same thing goes with the coach.
You're three and eight, nobody's unfire able. That means nobody
is above criticism. Pat Shermer, your offense was rolling in
(01:17:18):
the first half, say KWin. Barkley ran for ninety four
yards in the first half. In the second half he
gets five carries second yards. O b J was right.
Four of the Eagles top five cornerbacks were even dressed.
(01:17:40):
How do you not throw the football? Wait a second,
first they criticized the offense for not throwing the ball
to handing the ball to say Kwan Barkley, but then
they say that, oh b J was right for not
throwing the football. I'm completely and totally confused. Is anybody
else confused, because I sure as hell I'm confused, right,
(01:18:01):
I'm just I'm I'm a little bufuddled there. You know,
why did they have so few plays? They were in
three plays, five plays, three plays, eight plays, three plays,
So they only ran the ball five plays. Well, that
means they threw it all the rest of the place.
(01:18:21):
Here's the thing. Whether he's right or wrong, it doesn't matter.
This is no different than the Baker Mayfield thing, and
maybe even worse because he's a wide receiver. Shut up,
just play. It's not your job to ever be critical
of the play calling, especially when you have the Kwans
(01:18:43):
dominating the game in the first half. Doesn't get the
ball in the second half, so they threw it a bunch.
He just didn't get it, maybe because it was double covered.
This is the problem with giving him money before he
ever played a game. This year, no one on earth
has said that Odell Beckham Jr. Isn't a super super
(01:19:04):
talented wide receiver. It's talented as kid as there is.
But everyone seems to be debating whether or not he
should be allowed to act how he acts. And all
I can tell you is they win in football games.
Whether it's criticizing Eli Manning or criticizing his play calling,
or criticizing whatever. It ain't his job. His job is
(01:19:26):
too run fast, test football, make moves, get in the
into If he doesn't get the football, he gets ready
for when he does get the football. But I don't
even understand the odd couple's argument. Man, I can't believe
they didn't hand it to stake Kwon Barkley and throw
it deep at the exact same time. Well wait, wait, wait, wait,
(01:19:50):
how many footballs are the Giants playing with against the Eagles?
Is it the rare two football offense? Because that one
would keep a lot more people happy. Three plays, five plays,
three plays, eight plays, three plays? Why they lose because
they had four three and outs? Yes, maybe maybe they
(01:20:12):
want to hand the ball off to say Kwon Barkley,
who will then throw it to Beckham Jr. Yeah, it's possible.
He I think he threw a threw a past a
touchdown past. Really this year, I believe you know, I mean,
I really think that that's kind of when it comes
down to, I'm not gonna sit here and tell you
that I watched every player that game or I know
(01:20:32):
exactly why they did what they did. I don't even
know if Pat Shermer's the greatest offensive mind ever, although
he did a good job in previous stints with the
Rams of Sam Bradford with the Vikings at times going
back to last year with case keenum like he's done
a good job. But that's not even the point. The
point is it's not your job, especially when everyone's had
questions about your level of buy into the coaches and
(01:20:55):
to the quarterback. Just play and if you don't win, say,
if called upon, I'm che I'm a score. Come to

Ohio State? In Oklahoma? They have to win, but we
don't know what happens if they do not win. Jason
Lacampford joins us from CBS Sports. Jason, uh, look, you
(01:22:46):
know things about all the different organizations. But you told
us a long time ago that Lamar Jackson was going
to start. Eventually he has gotten to start. They beat
two the worst teams in the NFL, but they do
have good momentum and Flacco we think is healthy. Does
flack O see the field in the coming weeks. No,
I can't imagine he does not unless Lamar Jackson gets
(01:23:08):
hurt or thinks take a dramatic turn for the worst.
But at this point, Lamar Jackson's there present and their future. Um,
you know, it's it's Joe Flacco wasn't wasn't gonna be
there in no matter what unless he had some sort
of m VP season and reincarnated his form from the playoffs.
Of so this has been in the win for quite
(01:23:28):
some time. And the style of play they have going now,
the complimentary football that they're able to play now that
they can keep an older defense off the field because
they're holding them all thirty seven thirty eight minutes a
game and they're running for five yards the last two weeks, um,
you know where they barely ran for five hundred yards.
Of the team the entire season with Joe Flacco under center,
(01:23:48):
they average two point seven seven yards per carry, that's
not sustainable. And when your best receiver is John Brown
and your quarterback is Joe Flacco at this stage of
his career, uh not beating him through the air either.
So this I think was frankly the whether Flacco got
hurt or not, I would have I would have made
this change, and I wrote columns and saying saying as
(01:24:09):
much because it was the only sustainable thing about them,
and it gave them and identity. And instead of their
best at most athletic, best quick, quick twitch player on
the entire roster playing four point five snaps per game,
he's now playing every snap and it's opening things up.
How long till the league thinks they figured this thing out? Well,
(01:24:31):
I mean, he's a special athlete. There's a I mean,
figure it out. I don't know. I mean I think
it will evolve, and he will evolve, and things will
change over time, and what they asked of him to
do will change, and you know, hopefully for his sake,
to cast around him and proves a little bit um
(01:24:53):
and you add a few dynamic playmakers and you know,
you see where it goes. I mean, I'm left and
convinced that you know, Marty Morning. Webb's gonna be as
coordinator next year and we'll see, you know, what kind
of new thoughts and ideas are ahead. And this is
a team that's gonna have, you know, if they do
the right thing in terms of letting some older players go,
they're gonna have you know, seventy odd million dollars in
(01:25:14):
salary cap to play with, which they haven't had around
Bottomore really forever. They've always been up against the cap.
So they'll have a chance to do some things um
differently with their skill players. And I mean it's very
hard to figure out the mesh point and know where
that ball is going. And he's doing this with Gus
Edwards to you know what I mean, It's like he's
doing this with leving On Bell. I mean, Edwards couldn't
even get on the field for this team most of
(01:25:35):
the year. And again two point seven seven yards per
carry with Joe Flacco under center. So I think people
need to let this breathe and enjoy the ride a
little bit and and take it for what it is.
It's it's it is exotic and interesting. If you watch
it in terms of the formation they use, you'll see
a full back to running backs and Lamar Jackson back there.
You know you'll see, uh, two tight ends and an
extra offensive lineman. You'll see um, you know, a fullback
(01:25:58):
in the pistol. I mean, there's a lot going on
there that I think is confusing people. Yeah, I agree.
Jason Lackhamphora joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Eagles gotta win there down nineteen to three.
Let's start with Eldell Beckham Jr. Who said, boy, we
should we should, you know, should have thrown that ball
deep attack there. The injuries that they have in defense Blackfield.
(01:26:19):
On the other hand, in the first half they were
dominating running the football. They needed to do that in
the second half. But this is more about oh b
j Um how the Giants really feel about him criticizing
the play calling. I mean, look, I'm sure Pat Shermer
doesn't love it. He's walked into what's become a bit
of a hornet's nut there right from the onset, And uh,
(01:26:40):
it's difficult, and I get it. At New York is
is a cauldron without all this stuff going on, But
like it's not totally out of character. And I would
say again, maybe he's being too honest for certain people
like you, But he's just being honest. Like what he
said about Eli. Did he have to say it, No,
but like he's not gonna sit there and lie, you
(01:27:02):
know what I mean either, And this comes with this
is part of what you're buying, you know, when you
re uped with him, this was you know, this is
not out of character. Um So, I don't know, Doug.
I mean, that was a weird game. They dominated for
a half. What I think Barkley ran nine times for
yards in a touchdown in the first half, called six
(01:27:23):
or seven balls for like forty yards and a touchdown,
and then he only touched the ball five times in
the second half combined. They didn't run enough plays period.
They would say they volume to get everybody involved. You
know that That was my point. That was my point
before you joined us, as I actually said the exact
same thing. It's like, look, they had three three and
ounce and five possessions in the second half. They had
(01:27:43):
won five play possessions, So you just didn't have the
volume of it, no, exactly. And and I mean, look,
that team is going to be vastly different next year.
There's gonna be a different quarterback. I'm sure they'll keep
tinkering with the offensive line and you know, some secondary
parts in the past in game. But you know a
lot of times if he Ifletty didn't have that arrest
(01:28:06):
three weeks ago, he was getting that San Francisco game,
and now you know, it's it's it's it's just it's
just a formality of when they finally make the move,
because Eli, did you know he held off the Wolves
and the Grim Reaper for a couple of weeks. Doug
gotlip show here on Fox Sports Trading. I want you
to react to something which i've unfortunately we haven't allowed
you to break because you've been on the radio with us. Yeah,
(01:28:27):
I missed a call. Yeah, the Skins claimed Reuben Foster.
I'm tweeting it out now. Okay, so you tweeted that,
you tweet out, So if you're just joined us. Reuben
Foster was arrested for domestic violence. The same woman who
accused him invested violence and then recanted matter of factor
recanted in court like the same last week before he
was arrested for domestic violence. Do the Skins know something
(01:28:49):
we don't know? Are they gonna allowed due process? Like
that seems to be putting cart way ahead of horse
to to to lay a claim on Foster. I people
I talked to in the league did not think there
was a chance he would get claimed under these circumstances. Um,
I don't know how I mean. I mean, he's been
on waivers twenty four hours. It's you know, that's that's
(01:29:10):
I mean, the Skins couldn't have been investigating it, you know,
a whole lot before Sunday when all this came out. Obviously,
people did a lot of work on on different players
through the draft process. They've gone heavy on Alabam. I'll
just say this. They were on Alabama campus a ton
you know, you look at they brought in an Alan,
they brought into Ron Pain, they brought Ryan Anderson. Um,
they've been all around Alabama's front seven for two drafts now,
(01:29:32):
so they obviously had their own internal book on on
Reuben Foster. And I know they were one of the
teams that was more comfortable with the shoulder than some
other teams who thought he was close to a medical reject. Um.
And I obviously all hands on deck time in Washington
with all the injuries they've they've sustained but yeah, under
these circumstances, I did not think it was plausible, nor
(01:29:55):
did the executives I've been talking to about it this morning.
I think it was plausible than anybody claim aimed him.
You know, well, we'll see what Bruce Awnen and Doug
Williams and those guys have have to say about the move.
I'm sure they're obviously gonna say that there's NFL security
people have been, you know, researching the situation, you know,
and and YadA, YadA, YadA. Um, I don't know. I mean,
the arrest happened in Tampa. Bruce worked in Tampa forever,
(01:30:17):
Bruce knows a ton of people in Tampa. Um, I'm
guessing he made some phone calls and who knows. But
I am still stunned that that had happened under these circumstances.
I am as well. Let's let's get to the Philadelphi Eagles.
Did they figure something out? I mean, to come back
from three and they still a very difficult schedule in
front of them, have to go to Dallas, have to
go to l A two games with the Skins, although
that's not doesn't supper as difficult as maybe one scene.
(01:30:40):
Did they figure things out or is the fact that
they struggle with the Giants more telling of who they
actually are. Yeah, I don't know that they I mean,
the Giants have lost a lot of games for for
a reason. Um, they had a great second half. They
got things going, um, but I don't know about I mean,
to Odell's point, they got some mission is in the
secondary and I think that will show up, um when
(01:31:03):
they play some some better teams and the offensive line
continues to kind of be hit or miss. I will
say this, they seem to have gotten, you know, discovered
more of a running game the last couple of weeks.
And I don't think Dallas is going to run away
and hide from people. So we'll see. I'm not willing
to entirely write the Eagles off. Um, but they got
(01:31:23):
to find a way to get gold take on. I mean,
for for you know, making that move and what they
gave up, you'd think doing it on a bye week,
they would have found a way to make this guy,
you know, at least what he was in Seattle, if
not maybe what he was in Detroit the first couple
of years. But that that's something untapped that maybe if
they cultivate, you know, him, it helps him down the stretch,
(01:31:45):
but I still think they're behind the eight ball. What
does the league think of Baker Mayfield's comments about Hugh? Oh,
you know, he's got it. He's got his boys and
his buddies, but he's worked in a lot of play
is and a lot of people have come across him,
and um, I don't think that there's many people who
(01:32:06):
think that what Baker Mayfield said was you know or specifically,
I guess what he instagrammed or you know what I mean,
what he sent out on there, because that that, I
guess that went a little further than then what he
said to the media. I mean, look, it was a
train wreck in Cleveland. That thing was an abject failure.
They had no business losing that many games, and the
players felt like, by and large they had to overcome
(01:32:28):
you know, the players of the coordinators felt like, we
got to overcome this coach, you know, every single Sunday,
and if we do it enough will eventually turn this
thing around. But uh that that, you know, for Baker
Mayfield to have to come into the league under that
was ridiculous and there was no reason for the Haslems
to foist Hugh Jackson upon John Dorsey, and they did anyway,
(01:32:48):
and that's why this thing has uh you know, that's
that's why they kind of started the way they did.
And and and now that he was out of the building,
I think the results speak for themselves. What did Jacksonville
do now? Because you still Lord Borders under contract next year,
they better blow the whole thing up. I mean, thanks, So,
I mean they're they've got contract issues, they've got cap issues,
(01:33:11):
they don't have a quarterback, they don't have a skill
player who could even start. Um, I should say, a
pass catching skill player who could start for most bad teams.
The running back is a problem in more ways than one.
And he's making over eight million dollars a year, I
meaning his ability to stay healthy, his ability to be punctual,
(01:33:34):
and to have the right attitude and the right work ethic.
There were a lot of concerns about that before he
ran and started the melee. Um that you know cost
them the game. Not that the games matter that much,
but they went from first and goal at the one
where he would have four chances to plow it in
to missing a forty two yard field goal in that sequence. Um,
they've got major discipline issues. I don't know if Tom
(01:33:55):
Conflin sticks around for it. If he does this, he
want to coach the team because they clearly needed Joel
of something very different than what's been going on. Their
personnel decisions have been horrendous by and large, Um, And
now they've got two franchise quarterbacks in their division and
one who can win you eight or nine games a
year and maybe a few more if everything falls into place.
So good luck with that down there. Outside of that,
(01:34:16):
Mrs Lincoln, how was the show? Yeah? Right, outside of that,
they're on the upswing, and boy, everybody's gonna want that
head coaching job. But not, um, are you into the
Chargers yet? I picked them to win that division. I
thought they'd compete for the super Bowl and that this
was their year um to kind of put some of
the shenanigans in the past, and the injury bugs and
(01:34:36):
you know, the kicker being like the drummer from spinal
tap and all that stuff, um in the rear view mirror,
and you know, so far, so good. I do like
what they have going on there and getting Bosa back here,
and you know, maybe they'll get the tight end back
as well. I think They're gonna be a real tough
out in the in the a f C. And I
think them going on the road won't be a big
deal because even their home games are road games. So
(01:34:58):
I think that's kind of steel of them a little bit.
And they've got this chip on their shoulder and you know,
Philip always trying to get over that hump. I do
kind of buy them. I do. I felt they could,
you know what, at least reach the a f C
Championship game. I'm not sure if that will happen or not, obviously,
but I'm not shocked by what they've done, not at all.
What's the who's the name or names you're hearing in
(01:35:19):
Green Bay because that that relationship seems doomed, doom for
doom for divorce. I don't think it's going to be
super sexy. Just go look at the history of that organization.
It's usually somebody who they already have ties to, who's
been there before. I don't see them running out there
and giving a college coach or John Harbaugh or somebody
like that, you know, nine million dollars a year and
(01:35:39):
having them be the face of the franchise. It's always
been you know, a steeped in personnel kind of rules
the day. And you know, like Mike wasn't a big
name before he got there, and like Sherman wasn't a
big name before he got there. Homegrin was a successful coordinator,
but you know, by no means coming into the building
with multiple rings as the head coach or anything like that.
So you know, I, you know, maybe it's Ad Filippo,
(01:36:01):
Maybe it's a college coach who who isn't you know,
as sexy as Lincoln Riley. We'll have to see, but
I don't. I don't. I don't see them setting the
bar at what it costs to pay, you know, a
modern day NFL top tier or whatever you want to
call them, a list been there, done that type of
head coach. I'm not sure that's the way they go.
Great stuff, Jason lock Camp for alright, lets you get
(01:36:24):
back to breaking stories. We apologize for taking away from
breaking that. Thanks for joining us. Thanks all right, Jason,
looking for j LC joining us on the Doug got
Lip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Texans have won
eight games in a row, but long term, I struggle
to buy. I'll tell you why next. Be sure to

Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. So the Texans won
last night Monday Night football. Everything is a everything is
(01:37:13):
uh is a downer compared to Kansas City in l
A right, because that was actually some there's some entertaining
parts of that game. And Deshaun Watson is you know,
is Musty TV. And they got J J. Watt and
j J. Watts wearing a Dylan sweatshirt, you know, Friday
Night Lights football team, and there's so many good things
(01:37:35):
there that makes you want to watch a team that's
won eight games a row now. But I struggled to
do it. I struggled to do it a struggle. It's
it's the reason that you know, the opening act comes
out first, and then they wait until the encore to
(01:37:56):
play the big song and just do it. I went
to late Michael Jackson's concert at the Sports Arena. Man
in the Mirror was the encore song. You don't you
don't break it out with Man in the Mirror and
Billy Jean, you know, and then go to let's go
to the new stuff. Now you go to the new stuff,
come out with something good. Then you go to the
(01:38:17):
new stuff, and then you go to the ones that
everybody knows by heart. Right, But man, I'm on and
that poor money, and I feel bad for Monday football.
They had that incredible game and now everything else kind
of pales in comparison, Like, yeah, it was a good game.
Yeah they're the hottest team the Yeah, but you can't
do it. The other thing I can't do is I
(01:38:40):
just I can't get myself to buy long term I
struggle to get myself to buy long term Deshaun Watson.
And the reason is he's just he runs sort of
recklessly out there, and I get these people are like, well,
(01:39:00):
that's you know, that's just who he is, just who
he is. Well, those guys get hurt, those guys careers
are shortened by the way. Um. I love these stories
of in business, this skill like Walmart killed the mom
(01:39:21):
and pop shop, right, and I would get and and
Blockbuster killed the mom and pop video store, and then
red Box killed Blockbuster, and then Netflix and Amazon Prime
killed red Box. Do you remember when we were kids
Thursday night football or nine kids college students? I was
(01:39:43):
college and Thursday night football was big East Miami Virginia Tech.
That's that's what I remember, Miami Virginia Tech. Now it's NFL,
and it's been NFL for the past couple of years,
but now they've finally figured out, Hey, what if we
put good games on Thursday night, like Saints of a
(01:40:06):
bye against the Cowboys who played Thursday night? How good
is that football game? Thursday night is Saints Cowboys, Sunday
night is Chargers Steelers, Monday night is Redskins Eagles, like
I'll watch We just had Lane Johnson. If you missed it,
download the interview. So, um, yeah, I don't. I'm not sure.
(01:40:39):
I think it's it's interesting on how Thursday night football
has killed college football on Thursday completely killed it. And
r G three and to a lesser extent, Finch Young
and some others. But r G three's repeated knee injuries
and then Deshaun Watson getting hurt has killed the idea
(01:41:01):
of the running quarterback. Heck, I just I just called
a charger game. I am bragging his humble brag, but
I'm also proud of myself. And Philip Rivers is starting
two three consecutive games. Philip Rivers is a bad athlete.
He is not. You would guys like, well, you don't understand.
He's in his mid delay thirties, he's had eight kids.
(01:41:24):
Like no, no, no, he was a bad athlete when
he was two years old. He can't he can't run fast,
can't jump high. He didn't even throw a football normally.
But he's an awesome quarterback. Why because being quarterback is
what you can do in the pocket. Have you watched
Tom Brady run? Painful at times, mechanical, He's tall, it's
(01:41:48):
not fluid. There's there's nothing super athletic about it, nor
has there ever been anything super athletic about it. But
he's with one, with the exception of one year when
one guy rolled into his knee, been able to never
get hurt. Why is that? Because the position of quarterback,
(01:42:08):
you do not have to be a great athlete. You
had to be just good and smart within the pocket.
So when I see Deshaun Watson, who's smart, but not Brady,
not Russell Wilson, not Philip Rivers, not Aaron Rodgers, and
I see how good he is outside the pocket, I
think long term that that that that will struggle. There
(01:42:32):
just are no old mobile quarterbacks. There are guys that
are athletic, but they stay within the pocket or stay
behind the line of scrimmage. And to Sean just we
saw him in college. In college his senior year, the
story was too many turnovers in the regular season, But
why do you have too many turnovers? Because he stayed
(01:42:53):
in the pocket and trying to prove vestit as a
pocket passer. Why was he so much better in the
college football playoff because he got out of the pocket.
He ran it. But you can't run in the in
the National Footballic. You just can't because either the turf
gets you or another player does. But something gets you
and you get hurt and you're never the same, Like
(01:43:14):
like people remember Cam Newton. Have you guys ever come
upon Kim Newton. Kim Newton is one of the most
imposing human beings I've ever met. He's listed at six six.
He might be six seven. He's two and thirty pounds minimum.
He has built like a freight train. Cam Newton's most
(01:43:36):
successful season to date in the NFL's a couple of
years ago when the m v P and how they
do that ball control? He ran it. They ran it.
They didn't put him in harm's way and they didn't
leave in the pocket. And do you remember what has
happened afterwards? Why do you have such a disappointing season
last year he had shoulder surgery? Why because he got
(01:43:56):
banged up? And two because he tried to stay in
the pocket and be an accurate pastor, which is not
who he is or what he is. This is not
a slight on Deshaun Watson or Cam Newton. This is
just what it takes to survive long term in the NFL.
Is a guy who can throw from the pocket. It's
not a pretty It's like golf. Tiger Woods is the
first golfer to get in great shape. But it's not
(01:44:19):
a prerequisite to be a great gold that you have
to be a great athlete to be a great golfer,
hand eye coordination, sure, but overall athleticism. No, You're not
running from anybody. I mean it's it's the running backs
not being wanted after thirty. It's not because we don't
like running backs. It's because there's just a an amount
(01:44:41):
of attrition. I told the story before about my wife
having an Infinity an suv as like the best, safest,
most reliable car we ever had, and we got the
extended powertrain warranty and it took us to like a
hundred thousand miles, Like hey, listen, we want to then that,
like now you can't do any warranty after that, Like
(01:45:02):
what do you mean? Like wow, that that's all he goes,
And you know what at like thousand miles transmission went,
you know, power train on would lasts so long and
and all the rule changes protect you in the pocket,
not out of the pocket. So it's this is not
me not liking to Shaun Watson. I thought he would
(01:45:23):
be have a chance of a break through superstar and
he's had a really good year. But I watched him
and he's an out of the pocket guy to be successful,
and those guys don't last. They just don't last. Cana
and Granger drawn up winning play. Visit Granger dot com
for Industrial supplies and safety, probably to have your business
across the goal line granger for the ones that get
it done. Isaac Lowenkron gets it done. What do you got,
(01:45:45):
Isaac hey Doug. Multiple outlets reporting a short time ago
that former San Francisco forty Niners linebacker Reuben Foster has
been claimed on waivers by Washington. The forty Niners cut
ties with Foster hours after he was arrested lay Saturday
night on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge at their team
hotel in Tampa, Washington at six and five, leads the
(01:46:07):
NFC East and next visits the Cowboys on Monday Night football.
The Tampa Bay Times reports Buccaneers QB Jamis Winston reached
the settlement to end the sexual battery lawsuit filed against
him by an Uber driver who accused him of groping
her in The NFL suspended Winston but the first three
games of this season for violating the league's personal conduct policy,
(01:46:28):
and the Minnesota Vikings play safety Andrew Sendejo on injured reserve.
He's missed the last six games with a groin injury.
In college football, Scott Wolf of the l A Daily
News reporting that USC has fired tight ends coach Carrie
Colbert just a short time after. They also fired offensive
coordinator Team Martin, as well as defensive line coach kennchi
U Desi, and finally, Central Florida quarterback Mackenzie Milton is
(01:46:52):
going to have reconstructive surgery at a later time to
repair his right knee. Blood flow was restored to his
right leg and his nerve is injured but intact. Milton
sustained the injury in Friday Night's victory over South Florida.
Doug back to you music. Have you seen the injury?
Did you watch? Are you type Are you type one?
(01:47:14):
Type two? Or type three? And I don't mean diabetes diabetic.
I mean I do not have diabetes. Thankfully I am
type two, which is I have to watch it once
so I can just conceptualize what it is, what happened,
What were the ramifications, and then I'm good? No more
(01:47:35):
after that. Have you watched it? Because yeah, I watched
it the one time, only one, only one. You didn't
run a line it back because you want to see
it again? No ramas. Have you seen it? I did.
I watched it the first time, and I wasn't sure
if it was that bad because he just got looks
like you got taken out? And then I turned it off.
Then I realized that that wasn't too bad, and then
I watched it again and then I went past the
(01:47:56):
part or I turned it off the last time, like, Okay,
that wasn't good. Do you guys see Carriss lavert one
from last week? I didn't see that one? You honestly
your rebco landed on his leg. Check that one out
was fun one? It's not fun for him and sucks
Carriss having a good year. I really like Harris Yeah,
Alex Smith one, Alex Smith? Why did you guys watch that? Yeah?
That was good? How many times? Just once? Just I
(01:48:19):
can only yeah, you know you're type two? Yeah, you're
type two. And even even after the one time, I'm
always just like, oh god man, why did I Okay,
you're you're you're ashamed of yourself? It said that I'm
ashamed of myself. But it's almost just like it gives
you that it makes you cringe, so you're like, why
did I do that to myself? Did I really need
to see it? Like that's always what I always like
(01:48:41):
have that internal conversation like, Okay, do I actually need
to see this video? Or can I just understand that. Hey,
you know, Alex Smith, starting quarterback of the Redskins, got
rolled up on and his legs broken. But I'm always
like I should see it just to fully understand it.
And now you fully understand it. Yeah, and now you're good.
And it is that bad? Yeah, I mean, make z
milt when you feel terrible. You know, had lost a
(01:49:02):
game two years and it was for the conference championships.
This thing is like over soon and he yah. And
when you hear the blood flow was restored, means that
they lost blood flow to the leg. That couldn't be good.
Couldn't be good. I'm sure there's got to be something
that was pumping blood into that leg to keep it,
(01:49:26):
you know, from having to be amputated, because that actually
is a problem, right like you actually, but man, that
was a gruesome injury. Just gruesome. And apparently it's the
same he's gonna go through the same process. Who's the
tight end we had him on earlier this year from
the Bears? Was it Zach Miller? Right, Zach Miller had
the same type of issues and it's all about and
(01:49:47):
Zach Miller came on the show and said, Hey, it's
about the people who treated me right away. Otherwise I
could have lost my leg. That McKinsey Milton. Let's hope
he got the same in the right treatment. You know.
So well, that is off stuff, awful off off. Apparently
everybody except for Clay Helton is getting fired from USC.
If your name is not Clay Helton, you probably should
(01:50:08):
bring your playbook to Lynn Swan's office. So that's going
to be fascinating. I mentioned this earlier in the day.
Lynn Swan released a statement this weekend um saying why
he was going to stand by keep his embattled head
coach and let me see if I want to make
sure I get this thing right here. Um. He says
(01:50:34):
that this is great. This is like one of the
all time one of the all time statements, isn't it.
This is from Lyn Swan, who is the athletic director
at USC. We acknowledge and understand our deficiencies in areas
that include culture, discipline, schemes, personnel, and staff. Okay, like, listen,
(01:51:00):
way suck. Our culture is bad, there's discipline is bad,
where schemes are bad. Our personnel is bad, in our
staff bad. But all that said, we're gonna keep our
head coach. And it should be noted that the reason,
the reason that they're not firing Clay Hilton is there's
(01:51:20):
a doctor who worked at USC who the school is
paying out millions and millions of dollars in settlement fees.
And I'm guessing it's just too expensive to fire a
coach paying fifty million dollars and pay all these settlement fees.
But man, does that look bad? Man? Does it look bad?
(01:51:42):
What's crazy about SC being bad is I do think
it hurts our ability to watch college football. Like most
of the brand names are good, most of them are
very good. But it's been a kind of boring college
football season, hasn't it. I the most thrilling thing was
we had to wait till the end of the year
to figure out if Michigan could beat Ohio State and
(01:52:04):
or answers no, But Alabama did they have any Was
there any thrilling game at all? The Citadel at halftime?
Maybe you know at the Citadel you have to do
that thing where you show each other your food before
you get it. Have you ever seen that? Why would
you need to do that? What's like a military school? Yeah?
(01:52:26):
Military school? So military school. I can't think of a
game Clemson, they had that one game against Syracuse. You know,
their biggest drama is it was Kelly Bryant transferring after
being benched. It's always funny, though, that college fan will
(01:52:49):
tell you can't get in the NFL because you know,
it ain't like college where every game matters and every
game is important. Like, all right, well, you know, not
Name had the Michigan game that was closed, and the
first half of the USC game was closed. There's like
one other game that was closed outside of that, like
(01:53:09):
Alabama had the Citadel and then a little bit of
challenge from Auburn. Clemson had Syracuse and outside of that
nothing any critique you make of of the NBA in
terms of, well, I know who's gonna be in the championship,
you pretty much knew. Notre Dame is the only team
that's a surprise. It's been incredibly predictable. The only thing
(01:53:37):
that works with predictable though, is playoffs. And while regular
season college fooball may struggle because of it, post season
college football do well, just like the NBA Finals predictable
over the last couple of years with the Calves and
the Warriors. Even if we didn't like the regular season.
Ben Roethlisberg is not changing anytime soon. I'll explain next.

This time we get you caught up on as many
sports stories as possible. We call it the press. The press.
The press is brought to you by Granger for Safety
and Industrial Supplies. Grangers got your back? Is the Grader
dot Com? Isaac Locron, what's in the press? Doud? We
actually have news that just came down just moments ago,
(01:54:46):
Washington confirming that it has claimed linebacker Ruben Foster on
waivers and Washington Senior Vice president of Player Personnel Doug
Williams just issued a lengthy statement and I will read
a portion of it to you. Quote. We fully understand
the severity of the recent allegations made against Reuben if true,
(01:55:07):
you can be sure these allegations are nothing our organization
would ever condone. Let me be clear, Reuben will have
to go through numerous steps, including the full legal process,
an investigation, and potential discipline from the NFL, as well
as meetings with counselors associated with the team before he
will ever have the opportunity to where the Burgundy and
(01:55:30):
Gold as a player unquote. So that statement would assume
to imply that all that will not be completed in
time for their next game on Monday against Dallas. Yeah. Look,
it's it's weird, and I think they there's one of
the two possibilities here. Either one they're like, look, let's
(01:55:52):
let's see this thing out due process, which is what
it honestly feels like, even if it doesn't read like.
The second is they don't think it's as bad as
it reads, and they're willing to wait for the rehab
for him, And that would be a that would be
a flawed idea, right, Like, I don't think that's smart.
So if they think something happened, they still picked him up,
and shame on them. And by the way, that's I
(01:56:13):
believe the second time. There has been a statement issued
to the meet from to the media this week with
the phrase let me be clear this week and the
first one was not received so well. And one more
line from the statement, Williams adds, we decided to investigate
the situation with Rubin further by claiming his rights after
candid conversations with a number of his ex Alabama teammates
(01:56:34):
and are current players who were overwhelmingly supportive of us
taking this chance again. That a statement just released by
Doug Williams, Washington, Senior VP of Player Personnel in college
football a tweet from the legendary Gil Brandt. The phone
of former Texas Tech coach Cliff Kingsbury has been ringing
(01:56:54):
off the hook from NFL teams, including two that have
given him firm offers. College offense has infiltrate of the NFL,
and Kingsbury superb knowledge of it is in high demand unquote,
and USC, of course already fired its offensive coordinator Team
Martin earlier today and already reports of surface that Kingsbury
has been spotted on the USC campus. However, it also
(01:57:18):
could be a pie CAPIFI fratbro named Logan, so have
to investigate that further. Okay, that's hilarious. That's your best
line ever. That's great. Um. Look, I've been told that
he wants the Cowboys gig. I've been told that he
wants the Cowboys gig. But remember he played in the NFL.
(01:57:39):
I believe he's in Green Bay for a short period time. Uh.
That's one where you might just want a wait, but
it's look, it's a you know, you're rolling the dice
way to see if green Bay calls sc would be
pretty good because I'm sure he thinks that if he
wins there one, he can pick his next spot. In
two you can maybe maybe the next be the next
head coach. But yeah, I think he also start in
(01:58:01):
La La Land, if I'm not mistaken. Very talented, multitalented guy.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is not apologizing for his
twelve interceptions this year, saying on his weekly radio show,
I'm a quarterback that is going to go out and
sling it. You talk about gun slinger or whatever you
want to talk about. I'm not going to worry about interceptions.
(01:58:24):
I hate doing that. They bother me, but I'm gonna
go out and play my game and try to help
us win football games. Unquote, also known as the Nathan
Peterman approach. Maybe no, maybe not. Nathan Peterman has been
trying really hard to be a gun slinger, right. Unfortunately
he keeps shooting himself. He keeps doing the plexico burst
and shooting himself and others in the leg repeatedly. That
(01:58:46):
sounds great, you know, and it gets like, oh yeah, AWESO,
I'm bad and you don't want to be tentative. But
he didn't throw that lot of interception being a gun slinger.
That was just being careless and kind of a no. Look,
I told Trent Dilfer, I thought it was a it
was there was a flaw in the play design because
he couldn't couldn't read the defense only you know, fake
(01:59:07):
the handoff. Uh So I like the idea of the
mentality I'm not gonna be tentative, but let's be honest,
he didn't throw an interception at the end of that
game being tentative. Tiger Woods admitted that he was worn
out by the end of his mostly successful eighteen campaign.
He said during a news conference at the Bahamas quote,
(01:59:30):
I was not physically prepared to play that much golf
at the end of the year. It's been one of
those years. It's never been this hot at every single tournament.
It was just stifling, starting out in d C, then Acront,
even the p g A Championship in St. Louis. It
was hot for all the days. New York, Boston, it
was in the mid nineties. At East Lake in Atlanta,
(01:59:51):
it was just hot. It was hard for me to
maintain my strength and my weight through all of that.
I was exhausted by the time I got to the
Ryder Cup. I was worn out mentally, physically, and emotionally unquote.
But where's glutes firing? That's what's most important. It's interally.
This this proves the Tiger Woods is not an old person,
because once you're an old person, you crank up that
(02:00:12):
heat to like eighty degrees to the house. What is
the deal with old people? Why do they like it
so hot? All right, let me just start fitzing all
over yourself. You like, what do you mean it's hot?
It feels it feels wonderful. Moved to Florida. It's always hot.
Hot in your studio. I think I don't want I
don't want to aid you, but it really is hot.
In your studio. Well, that's because everybody else has it
(02:00:33):
in like the Arctic around here. Like to sleep, I
like to sleep in like sixty sixty degrees if I
can see my breath when I sleep. I'm sure you
volunteered to cover the Great Alaska Shootout. In all those years,
the forty years that it existed, it never got to
never got to go. Oh, it's too bad. I think
(02:00:54):
the last one was was last year. And and by
the way, I wonder if Tiger Woods aligned by that
saying it was too high will lend itself to the
global warming debate. And finally, real quick to Marcus Lawrence
and the Cowboys asked today about the Saints offense, and
he said, and I quote lightly and delicately, they're going
(02:01:15):
to have to match our intensity bleep for sixty minutes straight.
If you hit a bleeping bleeper in the mouth and
then they ain't doing what they're regularly doing, putting up
fifty points, they start to get a little distressed. Now
you got them where you want them at, and then
you bleeping choke their bleep out unquote it out there
and pressed that the press's what we're gonna do, right,
(02:01:39):
are we? Gonna happened to a slim gym at some
point in time to the one into Marcus Lawrence become
a member of ww see nitro. Is that what he is?
W W Nitro? I don't even know that. I don't
even know the difference. Great Costell Tomorrow, Andy Anthony Costanzo
