We'll talk with the Hokey head coach, Buzz Williams. Then
Chris Beard would join us shortly thereafter. Texas Tech not
related to Virginia Tech, right, same last name, kidding. Chris
Bear will join us. I believe he just got off
the plane in Orange County as they're playing in Anaheim.
Will be at those games. Doug Ferrar, who's an author
(01:27):
covers the NFL for USA Today, is gonna join us,
and then Chris Hanes will join us for his weekly visit.
The NBA Insider from Yahoo Sports, who was a Big
time podcast knows everything going on inside the NBA. Connor
McGregor has retired, and we're supposed to believe it. We'll
get to that Colin Coward things. Zion Williamson is already
a top twenty player in the NBA. U Kai and um,
(01:54):
we got a bunch of other stuff to get to.
Major League Baseball's opening day is this Thursday? A Ramos
trying to play hooky? All right, Ramo's gonna have a
he I heard he hired a look alike to sit
in the chair on Thursday so he can go out
to Chevez Ravine and watch the Dodgers take on the
Diamondbacks at one o'clock local time. Don't worry, our boss
(02:15):
isn't here, so if no one is no one is
the wiser because of it. We'll get you ready for
Major League Baseball season with a couple of sizeable extensions,
including Noah Syndergard re ups with the New York Mets.
But last night Devin Booker was amazing, amazing fifty nine points,
(02:37):
four rebounds, four assists, and he shot a good percentage
that's uh of his team's points. They scored ninety two.
He scored fifty nine. That's the most since Kobe Bryant
scored sixty six percent versus the raptors of his team's points,
fifth most all time. He's the fifth player to lose
two games in which he scored fifty points or more,
(03:00):
winning Lebron Bob McAdoo achimalized one, and Michael red It's
the most point scored in a thirty plus point loss. Huh.
And most teams when when they have a player score fifty,
let alone sixty all time in the history of the NBA,
teams are fifty two and nine. Team when someone scored
(03:20):
sixty points the Suns, Well, the Sun's got blown out
by thirty three points. And what happened at the end
of the game was the Jazz started fouling other players
so they couldn't get the ball to Devin Booker, so
that he couldn't get sixty points. It seems like weak sauce, right, man,
(03:42):
you can't look what You can't stop me? You can't
stop me. Why are you fouling? Ramos was at your
takeaway when you when you saw that. I'm sure you've
seen the highlights of the Jazz fouling the Phoenix Suns.
Stop fouling, is what I said. Stop play defense, be
a man, Be a man like Ramos in his seventies,
(04:04):
got his wife pregnant. Right, That's that's who Ramos is.
Ramos is a good looking seventy five year old man.
He or he's the only guy who looks younger and
is as old as Ramos is. Learnon Hamilton, the coach
of Florida State. But dude, I look at it completely
the opposite way, completely obviousite way. By the way they
(04:25):
were stopping them. The Sun's only had eighteen points in
the fourth quarter, and all they were trying to do
was get Devin Booker to sixty. That's because the Sons
are a complete and total joke. And while you might say, hey, man,
why don't you stop him. There's a reason that most
guys aren't in the game when they're down thirty, because
(04:48):
it's called garbage minutes for a reason. And when you're
scoring during garbage time and you're a star player. I
don't actually think the Jazz were wrong for what they
were doing. Like, look, the Suns can the Suns want
to trot out there and be the champions of nothing
and win things like this. Fine, have fun, that's cool,
(05:10):
but how many times have we seen this? And we've
seen him before. He had seventy and they got blown
out in a loss to the to the Boston Celtics.
They're beaten by ten. He had seventy points, eight rebounds,
six assists. You can sit here and tell me, hey,
your team stinks or your team was too concerned with
(05:32):
getting one player some record that doesn't mean anything, getting
into some some demarcation instead of actually winning the basketball game,
actually winning the game. It's not a shot of Devin Booker. Like,
Devin Booker is a really talented player, and he's still
super super young and has the chance most people think
to be a superstar, and right now he's just a
(05:53):
really good player to kind of borderline star. But who
cares how many points a guy scores When your team
gets beat by thirty three points? Man? Who who? Who cares? Zero?
People care garbage time points? Like, yeah, I got fifty nine, dude,
(06:17):
you got run out the gym. You have the second
worst record in the NBA. Like, whether letting you score
or not, you're playing against their backups, backups, like this
is call up time. If if anything, if anything, the
(06:40):
Sun's We're in the wrong. You know, the Sun's went wrong,
not the jazz, Like, look, do I love the jazz fouling?
Like no, but I gotta get it. They're sitting there
going like, well, what are you guys doing. You're gonna
play your star and he's gonna get these hollow stats
(07:01):
because he's running a fever. You guys are getting run out,
Run out the building, pull him and just play basketball
with the backups. That's what everybody, literally everybody does, except Phoenix,
because they're so used to winning that they've actually made
it where it's okay if you lose as long as
you look pretty doing it. Oh, don't worry about he
(07:23):
lost by thirty three. Our guy had fifty nine points.
It wasn't just fifty nine, it was statistically a good
fifty nine, right, He was nineteen of thirty four and
sixteen and seventeen from the line, Like, that's that's a
that's a crazy good stat line to lose and to
be that efficient only shows you that one. And by
(07:46):
the way, jimmerfer Debt was the opposite one of ten
oh of five in his first game back in the
NBA in Utah, former player for b y U. But
this is exactly what you thought. I think it is.
He was the only guy's school ring and they were
so concerned with with Devin Booker getting his points that
they forgot about trying to even compete to win the
(08:07):
basketball game. So I don't think they did anything wrong.
I don't think they did anything anything wrong. This is
the Doug Gotlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Ryan
Music agreed, disagree, feel free to discuss. I totally agree. Um,
I see no problem with the Jazz, who were already
(08:29):
winning the game by such a large margin that sure
they may want to take a little bit of, you know,
some respect in knowing like, hey, not only we're gonna
beat you by thirty, but we're also going to prevent
you from scoring sixty and if I'm the Phoenix Suns.
If you're taking offense to that, I mean, you should
care more about winning the game than you should care
about like whether or not he gets sixty or seventy
(08:50):
or eighty or whatever, whatever the case may be. I
also think that, um, you know, it is pretty interesting
that they take offense with the fact that whether or
not they're gonna score sixty, Like shouldn't Like, what's is
it really that important to get that one extra point? No?
(09:11):
This is like the triple double thing, right, this is
the this is the triple double thing. This is the
like did you play any better just because you got
the tenth rebound? No? Sometimes you play great and you
have you know, eighteen points, seven boards, and nine assists.
So yeah, I mean, like, look, nothing signified that the
(09:34):
Phoenix Suns are playing for meaningless, you know, markers more
than they were really ticked that the Jazz were fouling
and the Jazz were up thirty something. When a guy
has fifty nine points, like, I think fifties a big number.
You know, there's only a handful of guys I've ever
scored fifteen NBA game. He scores fifty again, Like, all right,
(09:56):
and't you take him out, you're down thirty points and
you got your best player in the game, tam in
a meaningless road game when you're dead, you know, and
you're just trying to get like that would that would
actually piss me off if I was a member that
you touch Jazz and I get the oh, why don't
you just stop him? Like, well, we can just stop him.
But again, kind of the spirit of the thing is,
once we get the garbage, time we pull our guys,
(10:18):
you pull your guys, and they didn't do that for
Genda Tech head coach Buzz Williams joins the show up

(12:31):
on Fox Sports Radio. Uh there is whoever he goes.
We end up seemingly trying to talk to him in
March because he takes his teams afar in the n
c A terms, teams play with toughness and with pride.
He does a hell of a job. He's Buzz Williams.
He joins us on the Doug Gotlib Show on Fox
Sports Radio Virginia. Tech advances to the Sweet sixteen to
(12:53):
take on a CEC rival. Duke and Buzz kind of
have to spend some time this year on Fox Sports Radio.
Buzz how are you? I'm doing good? How you doing
dog good? Man? Um? First, you know your team is
you know when you when you lose your most important
player for a good portion of the season. UM. Obviously
it's hard for people who don't follow Virginia Tech to
understand how that affects you. But did it did it
(13:16):
make you actually a better team because you had to
play without him? You know, you played the position and
we're one of the better ones in the country at
that time. Uh. I think when five got hurt, Doug,
we were we were if you were to listen to others,
we were on our way to the c I t
or the c v I. UM. During the twelve games
(13:38):
that he missed, he missed over of a C C
play and then obviously he missed the two games two
weeks ago in the A C C Tournament. Everything that
we did, UM, none of it was what we ran
when five played. We did not change anything defensively. We
changed one of what we did offensively, and then with
(14:02):
each passing day in practice, we just continued to kind
of evolve and morph and try to figure out what
gave us our best chance. We played twelve games without him,
and six of those games we only played. We only
had seven guys. P J Horn, our backup five, had
torn his meniscus and he missed six games, which was
(14:24):
a portion of the stretch that five missed, So we
completely had to transform our team. It was a completely
different team. UM. But I do think the connectivity of
that group was as good as I've ever seen during
that span. How how did that happen? Was that something
you you tried to build or was it something organic
(14:46):
to the to the players themselves. Yeah, I think I
think it was organic. I think it was the players.
I think our staff did a really good job of
trying to boil down what the opponent was asta and
instead of having four or five things that we need
to try to UM take away or give us our
(15:07):
best chance, we kind of brought it down even further
to one or two things. And then I think offensively,
they knew that we were going to have um a
challenge to score no matter where we played or who
we played, And I think they understood the importance of
the reps every day we were taking in practice. We
didn't even we couldn't even play five on five, so
(15:29):
we're trying to figure out in breakdown situations, how to
make sure they understood the shots that we were going
to get from the new offense we were running, because
with with five plan obviously makes the game easier for them,
and of them collectively had to split up that responsibility,
and I thought they did a really good job with five.
(15:51):
Obviously Justin Robinson people haven't fallen. No, it's okay, you
and I know who you're talking about. I think most
basketball fans but for for uh for an for non
hoop had Justin Robinson outstanding point guard playing for you
for four years. I mean, he is your he is
he is your leader, he is your your go to guy. Okay,
so then how do you manage him coming back? Right? Like?
(16:13):
Right like a guy like that? And also it's it's
it's one thing to come back, and you know you're
playing Alabama and m it's a whole other thing to
come back and you're in the n c A tournament. Yeah,
that's right. Well, I don't think that there's a book
on how to manage it the right way. We took
pictures right before we went to the A c C
(16:36):
Tournament in hopes that maybe he could be released, maybe
on a minute restriction, and the medical team did not
think that he was ready for the wear and tearror um.
So that was on the the SEC tournament started, and
then we took pictures again Doug on selection Sunday morning,
(16:57):
and that was nine days and that that time frame
really allowed the healing process to maybe continue on the
path that it was on. I think he's kind of
been ahead of scheduled the whole time. So we found
out on Sunday, and we practiced on Monday and Tuesday,
which were the first two practices he had been a
(17:17):
part of since late January. We trampled all the way
out to California on Wednesday and didn't practice, So I
don't know that. Um, it was collective. You know what
is best for five, Um how is he going to
handle things? But just as important as you know, is
what is best for our team and how are they
(17:38):
going to handle things. So I think it was the
combination of the two. I thought against St. Louis's physicality
and their pressure. I thought having another fascout on the
floor helped, another guy that could pass in dribble for
sure help. I thought he was better on Sunday against
Liberty just because he had actually played um, and I
(18:00):
hope that because we're able to play again at least
until Friday, with a couple of more practices here, he'll
be even better honestly relative to his wound or his flow.
But I think, uh, we probably managed it considering all
that transpired, as best we could. Virginia Tech head coach
(18:21):
Buzz Williams, our guest in the Doug Gotlip Show Hookeys
have had an incredible season eight and and doing so
without Justin Robinson the point guard, first substantial at a
time with a foot injury. Alright, so you get another
shot at the Duke Blue Devil's a team that you've
you've already beaten this year. Of course you beat them,
uh in February. And you know, anybody who's a Duke
(18:44):
fans like, well, we we we didn't have Zion. You're like, well,
hold on, we didn't we didn't have Justin Justin Robinson.
How different is the matchup considering each team was without
a start. Well, it's hard to say. I don't think.
You know, when we played them, Doug, it was there
um second full game without him playing, So I haven't
(19:09):
studied them, uh since that time in the games that
he didn't play. I don't know that schematically that they
changed much. Obviously is the best player in the country, UM,
so it's a very talented piece that they lost. UM.
I don't think Justin Robinson's talent is that of Zion,
(19:30):
but relative to his importance to our team, UM, I
think they're relatively the same. So we're a different team.
They're a different team. I think the same concerns that
everybody in the country that's played Duke has had. We
still have those same concerns UM, with their size and
(19:51):
their length and their talent. UM. But there I for
sure think that they're a different team. But in defense
of us, I understand the storyline as Duke as it
should be, in the storyline of Zion as it should be.
I do think that we're different. That does not necessarily
mean that I think that we're the odds on favorite
to win, But I think that we're different. So we're
(20:12):
excited that we at least have another chance with both
good players back on the floor. Well, look, I mean
part of the deal is buzz. Like I guess us
in the media, we're supposed to a lot of people. UM,
And I don't know whether they played or haven't played,
but you know this idea of you go and everybody goes.
I've never been in the locker room where I didn't
think I was gonna win the game, right, So anytime
(20:32):
a coach says, well, we think we're gonna win, it's
like supposed to be some or players says we're gonna
win in some sort of guarantee. But I've also been
in locker rooms where a coach is sitting there going like,
look these guys, you can beat them, and you're watching
the tape. You're like, damn, but you guys actually have
beaten them, right, you actually heard like Okay, So I
remember I was a Notre Dame and we're watching tape
(20:52):
and you know, we're watching Yukon and they got they
got Ray Allen and Travis Knight and Ron Scheffer, and
I was just going like, well, who am I gonna guard?
You know? But but but but having having seen them,
that's that's not part of the sales. So what is
the Like? I just feel like it's it's easy, but
(21:12):
it's hard to be duke. Right. The duke thing is
you can't turn it over like no pick sixes where
they gonna they're gonna pressure you out of your offense.
You know you gotta you gotta make them shoot jump
shots and contest it, and then you gotta rebound and
take care of the basketball and fight like hell and
not expect to get a call down the stretch. Right like,
am I am I missing anything? No? I think you're
spot on. Uh. I can hire you to be an
(21:35):
assistant on if you want to come. You can do
the pregame speech. I think you have to shoot more
field goal of tips than they do. A lot of
that is having a low turnover rate. I think the
other piece of that, which has always been our Achilles heal,
is only allowing them a maximum of one shot per possession. Uh.
(21:56):
Any time you allow a team that's as talented as
they are have more shots, there's always a by product
or a derivative of how did that happen? And you
can't you can't turn the ball over at a high rate.
But you also, you know, we held them to seven
offensive rebounds when we played them. We had the same number.
That's really really important. We only had six turnovers when
(22:20):
we played them, that's really really important. Uh. They blew
us out when we played at their place. The last time,
but the last three years we've eaten Duke, and it's
always kind of boiled down to those same things that
you're mentioning, Um, And I think, as you know, you
could probably sub in any opponent at a high level
(22:42):
of teams that are still playing in the last week
of March, and kind of a recipe for winning is
always going to stay the same. But if you looked
at the last three years that we've beaten Duke, it's
always can can we get more field goal attempts? Can
we not turn the ball over? We need a shot,
even if it's a bad shot, we at least need
a shot. And if it's gonna be a turnover, literally
(23:05):
just hold the ball so that they gotta take a
lot of bounds and then when they shoot, it's that's
probably for us, that's when the real game begins. I think, Uh,
what we try to do defensively is like most teams,
try to keep the ball out of the pain. But
the real game is gonna shot start on the rise
of the shot. Can we keep them from getting another opportunity?
(23:29):
And that will be just as important on Friday night
as it has been every time we played him. Yeah,
Kerry blast year was so much better than the second
game than he was the first game. He's you know,
he's gonna have to be as good as he was
last last time he played Duke and and getting some
offensive boards and securing the defensive rebounds. Last thing, buzz this,
This is not your first go around with it, but
you know there is there is talk of a potential
(23:50):
uh future destination for your services. How have you handled that?
Have you handle it with with your guys, because the
other stuff of the media and the fans that doesn't matter,
but with your players when they hear it, what's your
message to them? Yes, sir, I haven't addressed to any
of that stuff. I think I think similar Doug. Within
our culture, how we handle anything that's going on outside
(24:14):
in the world that we can't control, or what's said
on Twitter or what's written, we handle it all the same.
It doesn't affect us. Our job is to get better today.
Our job is to do the things that we can control.
And obviously have been asked the question a couple of times.
I have no problem answering it. But as far as
(24:35):
the relationship with our guys, to be honest, I think
there's a lot of coaches still coaching that are way
more gifted as coaches than I am. But one thing
that I take great pride in is the relationships built
on trust and love that I have with our players
and with our staff. And so we haven't addressed it
at all because that's how we handle anything relative to
(24:55):
the outside noise in our program. Buzz. I wish you
nothing but the best luck. Man. You got a hell
of a team. Your team is fun to watch. And uh,
you guys, you guys get after it the right way.
Good luck, good luck. I'm both the first and the
second shot defensively againstut And we'll talk to you soon.
Great talking to you. Didn't I didn't get the chance
to see it. Did your sister win last night? She's
not my sister. She she's my sister from another mother.
(25:19):
But but she's If she won last night, then we'll
take credit for if if she didn't, then she's not.
She's your brother, obviously, But I didn't know that she
was not your sister. I have a sister who lives
right down the street from cal It's not but but
it's not, coach Gottli bid cow. But she is no
good anytime. Buzz Buzz Williams joining us in the Dougallas.
(25:44):
She just gets you damn by get just quick sports
update what he got? Well, one coach, he's on his
way out of town. That's Tim Miles. Multiple reports saying
that Nebraska's parted ways with their basketball coach and it
looks like one coach is staying. But Steve prom and
Iowa stake ont of extension from the school, keeping him
to contract through five. The New York Mats gave Picture
Jacob de Gram a five year extension that's worth more
(26:06):
than one and thirty seven million dollars. The contract will
replace his current deal and includes an opt out after
twenty twenty two and no trade clause and a club
option for twenty four. Cubs gave Picture Kyle Hendricks at
four year extension worth fifty five million dollars. At the
NFL meetings, the league voted today to eliminate blindside blocks.
As for changes to replay with the league's competition committee
(26:27):
has submitted a third proposal that that proposal that is
that would allow non calls to be reviewed just like
the one in the NFC Championship Game. The Oakland Raiders
have signed free agent quarterback Landry Jones, and hours after
announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts, Connor McGregor's reportedly
under investigation for sexual assault in Ireland. The New York
Times says the alleged incident occurred in December and McGregor
(26:50):
has already been questioned once in the matter. We'll be
back to the Doug Gottlieb Show in ten seconds, But
first a word from farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know
every windshield collision has a unique sound. Beetle bird, poop, drone,
seen it, covered it, dr Farmers. We are Farmers under
written my Farmers check Fire Insurance, Exchange and affiliates products
(27:10):
unavailable in every states. Gonna catch up with buzz Williams. Um,
we'll get Chrispier to hop on with us in a second.
I know he's in a meeting with his staff and
he's gonna pop out, and so we may we may
have him on the other side of the break buyer.
I want want to ask you a couple of different things. Um,
let's let's okay. I'm just just did you have do
(27:33):
you do you like Virginia tech or Duke in that game?
I just I don't know that one just screams Virginia
Tech to me. I don't know why the only a
couple of things have just momentum wise, and I know
Virginia Tech got the win earlier, and I know you
guys talked about Zion not being there. I think the
close call for Duke really helps them in the next round.
I don't know if it will be the long term thing,
but maybe the close call against UCF instead of more
(27:56):
more of showing the warts, is at least a wake
up call for them in the Sweet sixteen. So I
like Duke. All right, I'm gonna take the other side
of that one. Let's catch up with Chris Beard, who
he just tesched down in southern California. And nobody knows
more about southern California than Chris Beard. He just you
hear his voice, you hear his accent, and you think
southern California. Beard, do you love it out here? Right?
If you hit the beach yet? If not, doue, But
(28:18):
we're staying in one of these Disney hotels. You know
that is amazed and you can't find your room. So
it took me ten minutes to find the second flour.
That took me fourteen minutes to find my room. I'm
on video of how long it took Seawan Sutton to
find his room. That's that's that's the that's the video
I want still. Chris Beard joining us on the Doug
(28:40):
Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. I don't want to
ask you something we were just talking about. Duke saw
their n c A tournament lives flash before their eyes
right down ones. I missed the free throw, probably a
push off. They end up getting a bucket and then
somehow getting to stop at the end. Um. You know
you've been last year in Elite eight and obviously you
gave Villanova their toughest challenge. You know you've been this
(29:00):
thing before as a coach, previously going back to Arkansas
a little rocket assistant coach before that. Do you believe
it helps the team to win a close game to
help push them forward? Does that does that change you
at all? Or is that just Hey, it's just one
close game, that's all that matters. I think it definitely
can You know, it's getting your guys to understand that
it's uh do or die. You know, everybody's season and
(29:21):
calluege basketball comes down to one game. The very fortunate
teams comes down to that Monday night. Um. But you know,
I would say with our team, we went to the
Big twelve tournament and got beat by West Virginia in
the first round, and even though it's obviously really disappointing,
we try to just kind of flip it back into
a positive and you know, reminded the guys with that emotion,
(29:42):
you know, when they thought it was over unfortunately or
fortunately it wasn't over for us because we had such
a good year. We got that large bit. But um, yeah,
I think when you're in a close game like that,
you can constantly remind your guys because they've been there before.
You You do have you know, Jared Culver has been
there before, but you also have a couple of older guys.
You know, Mooney comes in like this is these are
(30:03):
this his first experience at this level transfers from South Dakota.
I'm just wondering what you learned about some of the
other guys that had not played in an n c
A tournament having watched them performed last week. Yeah. The
best thing about our our new guys to the tournament,
and two of those guys are seniors, are they've been
great followers. I mean they listen, you know, a guy
(30:25):
like Matt Turike. They're listening to Norn's who's played in
multiple NC Tournament games. They're listening to Cobra, who played
in the four games last year. So it's kind of
been the tell of our team. We're unselfish, these guys
are connected, they're locked in together. Um I took guys
all the time, and sometimes the best part of being
a leader is to be a follower. I think Matt
(30:45):
Threeke has done that. They don't they don't act like
they know all the answers, they don't act like they've
been here before. They haven't. And they really did a
really good job listening to our vets. And Nornas is
the man. I mean, he's he's our core leaders, the
toughest scout our teams, most experienced cow we have. He
goes for fifteen and fourteen last game double double and
we needed it most and he's done a great job
(31:08):
with the leadership of this team. Chris Beer, Texas tech
head coach, joining us in the doug Otlip Show. You
guys get ready from Michigan outstanding club. And I've told
people all year, like what's remarkable is they foul. They
just don't get called for fouls. Right, They're like fourth
fewest fouls in college basketball. There's three three teams. Anybody
does the math. That's really really good. They're similar in
(31:28):
that fashion and a little bit in their defensive style
to Villanova, who you lost to last year, and you
came on with us and you're like, look, we just
we missed so many layups. How do you what can
you do differently in preparing for Michigan knowing that they're
gonna be physical, but they're not going to get called
for fouls even though they will they will make contact. Well,
(31:51):
we've been working on it for a year, so hopefully
we'll have a little bit of payback from our investment.
But last year when we got beat by Villanova, we
get back. We watched the films four or five things
that we look at immediately, as do most coaches. One
of our deal is finished shots. Um, you know, we're
just convinced at the three point shot. It's just a
part of basketball. You can win games or nights where
(32:11):
you don't hit it, but you gotta hit the small
shots around the basket. We call them finished shots in
our program, and against Villanova, we missed almost twenty shots
around the basket. Um, you know, they just do a
great job. They're physical with a lower body, but do
such a good job showing their hands that the rest
can't call anything. So you know, we're no excuse, guys,
We're not gonna sit around a wine about it. We
(32:32):
just basically tried to get better. And so um we
call it Villanova finishes. We've been doing them all year
in practice, and uh, you know this Michigan game, we've
already been up on the board this morning. We have
to we have to execute some Villanova finishes against this
good Michigan team. What about you? You know what your
team has to do in those Villanova finishes? What have
you challenge yourself personally to do better to get past,
(32:55):
to get past kind of this weekend. Yeah, that's a
great question, and exactly right. You know. I mean you
got a coach better too. When our season ended last year,
you know, we started that first team meeting about ten
days later, I said, guys, look, we've gotta have better
players next year. And of course the guys, I'll look
at you and I said, no, it could be the
same people. It just has to be better players. And
(33:15):
obviously Jared Colver and Morrow and Brandon, these guys are
better players than they were last year. And I think
it's always true as as coaches, Uh, there's no doubt
about it. Our staff is better having coached in the
Big Twelve against Lon Cruger, Bob Huggins, Scott Drew. I mean,
all these guys make you better on a night in,
night out basis, and so this year we just try
(33:37):
to do the best job we can. You know, as coaches,
you always still responsibility to try to have the right
guys in the game, try to be in the right coverages.
Um one thing we really try to do is take
advantage of these n c A timeouts too. You know,
the timeouts are basically twice as long, it feels like
then the normal season. I guess because of commercials and
this and that. But um so we've actually been practicing
(33:59):
that as well, to practice the longer. Tom House, we
don't get the game our first year in the tournament,
I'll there forget it. We got in the game, Like
we get downe with our top out, we're sitting there
and look at each other. You know, we're out there
running into the fan and cheerleader. So just things like that.
From a coaching standpoint, you try to get the guys
everything you have. You know, we tried to do a
good job coaching. Chris Beer the Big Twelve Coach of
(34:19):
the Year and Jared Culver, the Big Twelve Player of
the Year getting a chance to travel here dout in
Anaheim take on Michigan John b Line the Sweet sixteen
last year. Of course, they gave villan Over their toughest
challenge in the Elite eight. Coming up. Just short, Chris,
we'll let you go. We know you've got a ton
of preparing to do. Plus you still gotta find that
room or find your way back to the lobby from
that room. Thanks for joining us. All right, that's Chris
(34:42):
Pierre joining us. Who's the most impressive team so far
in the tournament? I will tell you next. Be sure
to catch live editions of the Doug Dot Leap Show

(35:29):
this time we like to put together all the stories
of the day, and we allowed Dan Buyer some leeway
and he'll play a game with us. This is game
time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Fire alright, Doug, the games. Yeah,
(35:49):
the game today is rank all right. This is where
we get to rank stuff. Rank the three most impressive
teams in the n C Double A Tournament thus far,
so through the first two rounds. Most impressive teams. Most
impressive teams so far. I mean, Glenzaga has been really impressive,
(36:13):
really really impressive. And who else has been impressive? Purdue?
They yeah, they did, I'll go with I'll go with Produce, Sure, Sure,
And then a third I oh, I thought you said
the top two. I'm sorry, Top Top three, No, top
top three. Um, I don't feel like Michigan was challenged
(36:36):
neither of their games, right, Yeah, they kept Florida at Bay.
Same thing with Montana Florida State, and you know to
Carre Murray State. Um, yep, they I mean, I'm gonna go,
I'm gonna go. I'll go with Michigan, alright, Wolverige Buyer.
(36:57):
Do rank the three top names the Lakers should consider
having as their coach next season? Should or will should
like your opinion? I like I like it at all. Um,
Jeff Van Gundy would be my number one. Jeff van
Gundy would be my number one. Uh, my number two
(37:19):
would be I'd see if Mike Shajevski wants to do it,
I would make that, make that call. Why not, you know,
hire some smart guys around him. Um, Bill self would
be three. Oh interesting. I was kind of hoping for
Mark Jackson so we wouldn't have to listen to him anymore.
(37:40):
But Opening day comes up on Thursday. A little curveball
and switch to baseball. Doug, rank your three favorites to
win the twenty nineteen World Series. World Series Favorites. I
got the I got them, I got the Red Sox,
(38:06):
I got the Astros, and I'm going to take the Yankees.
I was wondering. Yeah, alright, rank the top three teams
that you'd like to see on Hard Knocks. This summer,
Sports Illustrated quoting someone from NFL Films is saying that
all thirty two teams still up for grabs four hard knocks.
(38:29):
I know that they had certain parameters, but apparently that
maybe that's changed, but all thirty two teams still being considered.
Who would you like to see on hard Knocks? The Browns,
the browns, parts of browns. Oh, I'd like to see
the browns, the browns, browns and browns, not even like
the Jets or the Did I mentioned the Browns? Did
(38:52):
I say the Browns? Yes? I would think like if
you had the Steelers, it would be something that was
pretty contrived and that was all, you know, just the
Bend show. That's what it would end up being. Jets
could be interesting. I think Cowboys maybe always Raiders. What
about Raiders with the Raiders? Yes, I would like the Raiders.
(39:14):
I like the Raiders, but then it's all about the bronze. Alright,
Doug Ryan, Ryan Ryan Music. Who would you like to see? Um?
Who's that team? Uh in Cleveland Browns. Oh all right,
rank your three in Cleveland last year, by the way,
and you gonna do it again? Part two, The rank
(39:39):
your top three doug favorite spring break trips you ever
go on spring not even college? Maybe took the family somewhere.
Have you ever been literally never been on a spring
break trip? All right, so then this ranking is going
to fail miserably. I played basketball. Um my favorite Final
four cities I like and Antonio best in the second best.
(40:05):
Uh oh boy, but this is tough. Third best pick
of Final four. Everybody says New Orleans. Um, I actually
really liked Arizona just because you can your kids can
stay in Scottsdale and swim and you don't have to
worry about him. Yeah, let's we'll do that. This is
(40:28):
game time on the Duck Gottli Show. I have been
to clear We kind of did a spring break when
you're in clear Water Beach, Florida. We went we went
to that that that dolphins show. Uh where where dolphins tales?
That dolphins tale? You know, dolphin is anyway not flipper
(40:50):
the other way. I gotta love that Dolphin Tale thing. Well,
it's a movie you've seen, you know, ro almost knows
the movie No that so whale stupid, No Dolphin. There's
a dolphin that has its lose its time tail and
it gets in a prosthetic limb. Harrick Connick Jr. Harry
Connick Junior is in it correct, Dolphins Tale, Isn't it?
(41:13):
Is that what it's called? Anyway, we've been down there
and then you know, you go down the coast there,
Turpin Springs School, little beach community you can stay in,
So that would be that would probably my best. But
I'm a non spring break guy. Plus now I live
in southern California, which is like, really, you're gonna go
somewhere else when it's the best, it's the best. So
(41:34):
apparently an hour after this show, our fifteen after the show,
they're gonna vote on the possibility of changing instant replay,
making it so that you can you can have them
review anything why it shouldn't and probably will not happen.
I'll explain the law of unintended consequences. Next. Fox Sports

s R to listen. Live What Up Doug Got Leave Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Mm hmm. We we have this thing
in college athletics that we we love to do. Uh,
(42:24):
we love to point out like guy gets fired, like
Tim Miles gets fired, Like who's gonna get fired? And
maybe it's maybe it's because now I'm getting older, um,
and maybe it's because my brother's he didn't get fired.
He's on the Stafford Organ State. They're doing quite well.
Although he didn't get get the cow Poly Sinless Abissbo
job earlier today. Uh So that bums me out because
(42:49):
I thought he being at cal Poly alum and having
coached in the DUC system, thought he would get it.
But he did not get him John Smith got it
was associate head coach Accow State Fullarton. Congratulations to him.
But but the it's really interesting how we discuss things
like Tim Miles gets fired in Nebraska, and um, you know,
(43:12):
tim'son now multimillionaire and a guy who did a great
job at North Dakota State and then Colorado State and
has done a good job in Nebraska, made a lot
of money. But like we don't even realize that all
the other things that that change, Like I have a
really good friends named Michael Lewis. Michaelis played Indiana same
time I was. He was with Bob Knight's last point
guard Indiana, and Mike was on Butler staff as they're
(43:36):
like offensive coordinator under Chris Holtman, and he decided to
make the jump to the Big ten. You know, he
wanted to get a head coaching job, and he felt like, man,
I gotta go and spend my wings outside of the
state of Indiana. And now he's out of a job.
And Jim Allin Area's on that staff, and now he's
out of a job. Like those are really really good
people with families and lives. And as much as I
(43:59):
think fans are trained to only care about who's next,
we don't realize that ancillary kind of the unintended consequences,
if you will, of of firing coaches. Right, we understand
that you're gonna bring in another guy. It's gonna bring
new energy and new players. The unintended consequences are you
(44:21):
might lose all the players you have now. You might
you might make a decision that sets you back before
it sets you forward. It may not even set you forward.
But it's gonna be really interesting to see what happens there.
I bring that up because you know, the unintended consequences
of firing coaches or putting them on the hot seat.
(44:41):
It's a lot of the unintended consequences. Um, it's only
the unintended consequences aren't out there for the National Football League.
The NFL is gonna vote here at seven fIF teen
East Coast time, four Pacific. The NFL coaches came out
(45:04):
strong in the general session this morning on replay. A
lot of back and forth on it. This from Albert
briers verified account. I'm told Albert Brier works for Alberbrier's
NFL network, right, I'm told they just tabled discussion until
four o'clock today. The meeting is at four Pacific time.
(45:25):
Is optional for coaches. Lots of confusion over replay proposals
in that room. Maybe a vote comes in the four
pm our, maybe they wait until May. In other words,
like just the idea of, hey, you can throw a
flag because they missed a call, okay, but they may
have missed other calls in the exact same play. Are
we only allowed to focus on a miscall what happens
(45:51):
if well, there was a hold there? Okay? We also
saw when we went to replay there was a false
start or a player lined up all sides. What happens if,
during the process of going back to review one missed
call a non call, we discover an additional missed call
that goes the other way. What do we do? Then?
(46:15):
I love the search for something better, But if you're
searching for something perfect, let me explain something to you
and doesn't actually exist. It just doesn't you know? This
is it relates to the n c a A. Everybody wants.
Everybody wants something a perfect system where players are perfectly
(46:37):
compensated based upon their name and likeness. That's what people
say that they want. Well, one, do you really want that?
Because what happens to the people that that aren't really
worth the scholarship? Right? Like, actually, what about the guy
who kicks the scholarship but he never plays and all
he does is and does the bare minimum and doesn't
(46:57):
want to transfer and just wants to get the degree? Like,
can we make him pay some of that money back? Like, no,
it's not the way it works. He has no name
and likeness value, nobody knows the actually exists. Now that's
not the way it works. Okay. In addition to the
taxes and so and just so many different unintended consequences
(47:19):
to like, oh, why don't you just let sponsors pay players? Like, well,
that's kind of what happens with donations, but it goes
through the school now, so it's more on the up
and up, and you don't have to openly opened to
anybody outside of just played for your coach and for
your team, for your school. But there are a ton
of unintended consequences in opening it up. And the truth
(47:40):
is that for the greatest majority, the system is quite good,
incredibly beneficial, and it's it might it's not perfect, but
it's good. It's good. That's how I look at instant replay.
Instant replay is not perfect. The intention is not to
be frict. The intention is to try and get things
(48:02):
right when it's possible. But some things are not. You're
not able to correct, You're just not so. I don't
know how we've gotten to this place where we think
things are supposed to be perfect. You know what's here's
the here's the best analogy. I am, um, for the
(48:27):
most part, an anti plastic surgery guy. I have not
had any plastic churcher. I know, you look at my
face when I'm on TV and you're like, how is
that possible? It's just natural. I mean these are these looks,
these eyes that sparkle blue, this nose which is uh,
it has a lot of personality to it. These lips.
(48:48):
I know you think fillers, noope, natural, But if you've
ever seen anyone who's had work done, you're like, oh,
they've had work done, and yeah, maybe their eyes looked
better and there's not the wrinkles that my have in
them because I have three kids and a dog that
wakes me up at five thirty every morning to go
to the park and I get coffee and then I
(49:09):
watched way too much sports on TV and coach way
too many sports and and try and do all kinds
of different things. Sure, my hair is not perfect, but
if you ever seen anybody who's gotten the hair replacement thing,
technically it looks better, but it looks fake. You get
rhino plastic. How many times somebody have a nose job
(49:30):
where you're like, well, they look like they've had a
nose job. Correct. Somebody gets their lips done, You're like,
it looks like you had your lips done. They may
actually look better but look worse because it's fake. We
do this, we with a search. Plastic surgery is incredibly
useful kids that are born with a cleft palate, people
(49:51):
that have, you know, some sort of deformity. That's like
the that's the true intent of it, which is the
true intent of instant replaying the National Football League. It's
so that there's not egregious errors. WHOA, we got that
one wrong. Are bad, Let's fix it. But the more
times you go to try and fix it, more times
you want to go and replay it. Want it makes
(50:13):
it harder watch and too like all right, like you're
gonna have to keep going in there. People that have
plastic surgery have it all the time, and then you
get it done when you're in your thirties or forties.
Now you gotta get it done in your fifties and
in sixties. And every time you do it, it looks
faker and faker and faker two. Eventually you look like
(50:33):
Michael Jackson before he died. We're like, that's not really
a human being anymore. That's just a person that some
doctor created some face and nostrils and put lips on.
I'm not telling you, I'm anti insur replay or I'm
completely anti plastic surgery. But once we try and make
something really good perfect, we all know it ends up
(50:57):
even worse than before. And if they open it up
to hey, you can review anything. Remember, anything is in
fact anything. They may go looking for one thing and
find another. Doug for our covers the NFL for USA today,
I'll ask him about the possibility of expanding replay. Should
they do it in his opinion? Plus, he's got a
(51:17):
great article about Rob Gronkowski retiring. Is he the most
irreplaceable player on the Patriots. We'll discuss that next. But first,
you know, it's really hard about owning a business hiring people.

joints just on the Doug Gotlip Show. Doug Supposedly in
a couple of hours, they may or may not vote
(53:31):
on the expansion of instant replay. One of the things
that I point out that I know NFL people talk
about it is like, hey, there's kind of this law
of unintendant consequences. If you're gonna go into the hood
and all right, well you missed this holding call. What
if you missed the and off side or what if
you missed a false start, or what if there's a
there's an offensive holding before the defensive holding is Do
(53:54):
you think it's doable to review all plays, even ones
where there's no penalty flag being thrown? Yeah, exactly, And
Bill Belichick has been for years and years with the
owners meetings. Uh, He's been kind of the main guy saying, look,
we need to make everything reviewable, and the constant argument
(54:15):
against it as well will make the games so much longer.
It's like, no, no, no, wait, we don't need more reviews.
You have the same number of challenge flag to keep
the rules the same, but you make everything reviewable. If
a coach sees a past interference call and the referees
miss it, which is you know, the obvious um impetus
behind this particular discussion with the Saints in the NFC
(54:36):
Championship game, the coach that evere we write to run
his challenge flag out, you know, pull it out of
the soccer wherever and throw it on the field. You know,
I've I've never understood. And this goes back to when
Mike Carrera was the VP of Officiating. He was very
much against judgment calls being reviewed. And I understand the
NFL and that the various vps of officiating are you
(55:00):
against it because it makes the referees look bad? But
is the point to make the referees look good when
they missed calls? Or is the point to get the
stuff right. I've always advocated for the idea that everything
should be reviewable. If you just keep the same number
of challenges, I don't see how it makes the game longer.
I do see how it makes the game better. It
does make it longer. I think it it potentially makes
(55:22):
it better. But then there's a potential for all of
this other stuff to call. Do you think it actually happens.
I think they may install the rule where if there's
not a flag on pass interference, you can still fill
a flag. Because the NFL is very reactive about stuff
like this. Um, the new overtime rules happened when the
(55:44):
Saints went to the Super Bowl and Brett Farve didn't
if we remember that. So that's that's kind of how
the NFL does things like, oh we blew it. Now,
we're going to put in a retroactive rule. And that
happens with everything from officiating to domestic violence. So I
would imagine that the specific what I would call the
Sean Payton rule in this case, which is that even
(56:06):
if a flag is not called for passing interference, you
can still throw a challenge flag. I think that will
be installed. I mean, and little list that other coaches
don't like Belichick because he keeps beating them or for
other reasons. Coaches have been sort of net about the
whole idea of making everything reviewable. I think owners have
been even less into it um and you know, the
(56:26):
league I don't think wants it, so I would be
surprised if that passes. I think what will happen over
time is you're going to get specific, uh negative outcomes
or blown calls in the NFL react to those on
a piece by piece basis Doug fer Our joining us
in the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
He had a great piece on Gronk when he announced
(56:48):
his retirement, and the piece was titled by Rob Gronkowski
was the Patriots one irreplaceable player? Why? And the title
was kind of a good test of did you read
the article things? Because the the instant responses, of course
Tom Brady is a replaceable and well, okay, Tom Brady is,
in my opinion, the greatest quarterback of all time. That
(57:08):
doesn't make his skill set your replaceable. In other words,
you could bring in Aaron Rodgers and he would perform
at a a sub Brady level in some instances, and
a you know, post Brady level better than Brady and
other things. So you're throwing on the run, throwing boot
doing stuff like that. The thing that makes Gronkowski irreplaceable.
(57:30):
Let's say that Belichick does something to get two first
round picks and he gets both of the Isola tight ends.
He gets Noah Fant and he gets t J. Hockenson.
He would have to somehow combine those guys and make
each of them better in that particular Frankenstein model to
match Gronkowski, because Fant is the better downfield tight end.
(57:50):
Hockinson is a better blacker now Rob Gronkowski. First of all,
Tom Brady splits with and without Ronk are pretty nuts.
The one that stood up the most to me. He's
got an almost six to one touchdown interception ratio with
Gronk on the field, and it drops to under three
to one without him. He's the best tight end or
(58:11):
the best red zone target of his era, and we
all know about his receiving. I think he's also the
best blocking tight end maybe in NFL history. And you know,
Mike Ditka and John Nacki and guys like that would
certainly give an argument, and you know they would be
valid in that, but I've you know, I've maintained for
years and if you put thirty pounds on Gronk, he
(58:32):
would have been a Pro Bowl left tackle. So it's
being the best receiving tight end and the best blocking
tight end at the same time. And what that does
two defenses is you can never go base or dime
or sub package or whatever based on what Bronkowski does,
because even if he's the isolated receiver at the first
(58:52):
that his field, he can come in and run a block.
And if he's in the formation, oh, you think the
running lamb, it's a run play, Well, he might ship
the end and go three years up the seam and
you know, touchdown. He did that against the Seahawks and
Super Bowl forty nine. So the idument I made is
imagine if Earl Thomas was Earl Thomas, but he was
also good for ten sacks a year, or Brady could
(59:15):
run for six hundred yards and ten touchdowns this season.
What makes Golenkowski You're replaceable is that he does everything
required of his skill set at a plus plus level
at the same time, and that is exceedingly rare. Step
Gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio, UM Okay, let
(59:37):
let's get to some of the other player movement, which
is really interesting. Antonio Brown to the Raiders, where Look,
I don't know what you thought that Marie Cooper trade,
but I liked it from the Raider's perspective. They got
a first round pick and they got out from the contract.
They didn't think they want to pay him four team
million or redo his deal, so he got Antonio Brown,
(59:58):
who they probably overpaid. But I mean, I don't think
anyone thinks that Maria Cooper's as good as Antonio Brown. Um. Yeah,
I mean, Buddy also is gonna make more money than
Amara Cooper matter what Mari's new contract is. They got
Trent Brown, who they probably overpaid for. But that's what
you have to do in free agency to get left tackle. Um,
what do you think of what the Raiders plan looks
(01:00:19):
like now that we're at like the second phase of it.
First phase was shedding off two pieces, getting you know,
three first round picks. The second one is free agency
before the draft. What do you think, Well, you know,
going back to the n trade is interesting because as
you intimated, they've they've shut ale lot a cap which
they spent a lot of it on Trent Brown's They
(01:00:40):
bringing Antonio Brown, who I believe led the NFL last
year with nine d touchdowns, twenty yards and more in
the air throws. They got Roll Williams from the Chargers,
who's maybe the most underrated deep receiver in football, and
they now have a left tackle who can you know.
The thing about Trent Brown on his he was really
(01:01:01):
good for one season in New England, coached with Doanche's
Garneckia in what was basically a three to five step
passing in and Derek Carr, Now, whether it's scheme or
arm I'm not completely sure. I think it's both, has
been one of the more conservative deep throwing quarterbacks over
the last two or three years. Even in his great season,
(01:01:22):
he was not throwing the ball down the field. Now
you can see the coaches were, you know, holding him back.
Based on my film study of Cars, he's not a
great deep thrower. So I'm wondering, you know, if they're
going to this sort of air Gruden thing, now, do
they trade up and get a Kyler Murray and try
and trade Car. Have they seen with Car? Or they
(01:01:42):
talked to Car and they said and He's like, hey,
I can be a great deep thrower and they're buying
into that. UM. I think the most interesting thing about
the Raiders free agency moves is it definitely positions them
as a deep ball team, and in my opinion, they
don't have a deep ball quotaback, so that you know
that just excuse him. They gotta figure out. Okay, what
(01:02:04):
about Josh Rosen. It doesn't feel like he's long for Arizona.
I thought the Redskins need a quarterback. They went on
God Case Keenum, the Jaguars, the Dolphins, They've all seemingly
went and got their quarterback. That leaves us with what
the Patriots, potentially, the Giants, potentially maybe the Chargers. Who
do you think is willing to pony up the highest
draft pick to get Josh Rosen? Um, it's that's that's
(01:02:28):
because correctinens Bur at the owners meetings today was asked
about Kyler Marie and could not say enough good things
about him. S you could not say enough good things
after the Oklahoma Texas Tech game last year. UM. I
think the Cardinals are definitely in play for Murray, which
makes Rosen interesting. It's what are people willing to give up?
He's got, you know, the money, left and the rookie deal.
(01:02:50):
And you know, as far as which team, I think
you'd make a ton of cents for the Patriots. I'll
say this, and you go back to Jared Goffe's two
thousan in sixteen season. I think the Cardinals offense last year,
I think any quarterback would have struggled in it, and
I would I would compare Rosen. Not that he's gonna
(01:03:12):
wind up with a Sean mczy. He can only hope.
But I think it's far too early to you know,
throw roses on on on Rosen and say, oh, he's
not going to be an NFL quarterback. As far as
where he goes, he would, you know, I think he
has things to develop. I think the Patriots would make
a lot of sense. I think that Giants would make
(01:03:32):
a lot of sense. Um, the Patriots obviously are looking
at other positions right now. Um, you know, as far
as where he goes, I'm not sure. I think he
is gone, and I just I hope he lands with
a team that will give him a better situation than
Arizona did last year, because I'm hard pressed to think
of any quarterback that would have succeeded in that particular offense.
(01:03:53):
Doug Gotlives show here on Fox Sports Radio. Doc fer
our is our is our guest. Um, what do we
think of how it works out in Jacksonville? I think
short term well, And it's interesting because, of course, the
obvious narrative is full Folds is better than Bortles. I
agree with that, although I'll be interested to see what
(01:04:15):
Bortles is able to do because I think as far
as on field awareness and reading and stuff like that,
I think world is that far behind golf. I think
gos was just in a really good situation. Um. The
interesting thing about last year is how undisciplined their defense was. UM,
and this was from front to back, and you know
(01:04:36):
they they have some issues at safety. They're pretty well
set at corner obviously, linebacker, you know their front. But
I don't think it's an automatic. You know, if Folds
goes in and play is a bug above league average
people are kind of assuming, oh, well, they have a
great defense. I think they have great personnel. I don't
think that defense played up to its personnel last year,
(01:04:59):
and they did that was frustration with the offense, which
would be somewhat justified. UM. I think as long as
Foles is in a system that works for him, and
with de Filippos the offense recordator, I think he will
be It'll be heavy rpo and play action and stuff
like that. UM and I think it makes Jacksons go
better at the most important position. I don't I just
(01:05:22):
you know, I don't know that it takes him to
the super Bowl, because I've said they've got other sort
of subcarine issues they've got to address, no question about Doug.
For our covers to the NFL for Usday Today, check
out his book The Genius of Desperation, The Schematic Advantages
excuse me, schematic innovations that made the modern NFL. Doug
great stuff. Thanks so much for the insight and joining
us on Fox Sports Radio. Thanks that. I really appreciate it.
(01:05:44):
And pleasure is all mine mine. Let's get you to
Dan Buyer. A lot going on the world of sports.
He's kind of at our at our FIC center there
with all his TVs and there's buzzers and phones ringing everything.
When he got damn and they're spring training baseball, and
I've got some baseball news to start things off. Pitcher
j De Graham gets a five year extension from the
New York Mets. It's worth more than one and thirty
(01:06:05):
seven million dollars is The deal includes it opt out
after two, a no trade clause, and a club option
for twenty four that would be worth more than thirty
three million dollars. Comes gave Picture Kyle Hendricks a four
year extension worth fifty five million dollars. While Giants president
Larry Bear has been suspended without pay through July one
following the physical altercation he had with his wife earlier
(01:06:27):
this month. Commissioner Rob Manfred called Bear's conduct unacceptable and
required Bear to undergo an evaluation to decide for their treatment.
Connor McGregor, spokesperson, told ESPN that the New York Times
report is quote a rumor and they don't understand why
it's being reported. Now, what's that report? You asked with
The New York Times earlier today said that McGregor remains
(01:06:48):
under investigation for sexual assault in Ireland. The alleged incident
occurred in December. McGregor has already been questioned once in
the matter in January. Of course, it was late last
night that McGregor announced his retirement from m M A.
Patriots Odor Robert Craftley did not guilty the two misdemeanor
counts of soliciting prostitution as part of today's Finally, Craft
requested a jury trial for our the case. As for
(01:07:09):
changes to instant replay at the NFL meetings, the league's
Competition Committee is submitted a third proposal that would allow
non calls to be reviewed like the one in the
NFC Championship game. Finally, a bunch of notes from college
Hoube's Iowa State gave men's basketball coach Steve Promo contract

Cougars men's basketball coach, and Tim Miles is out as
Nebraska's men's basketball coach after seven years. We'll be back

to the Doug Otlip Show in ten seconds, But first
a word from farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every
windshield collision has a unique sound. Beetle bird, poop, drone,
seen it, covered it, dr Farmers. We are farmers under
written my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance Exchange, and that affiliates

(01:07:56):
on Fox Sports Radio. We got a lot to get
to kiddos, a lot to get to it's a wonderful,
wonderful show. Um. Conor McGregor tweeted last night, Hey guys,
quick announcement. I've decided to retire from the sport formerly
known as mixed martial art. Today. I wish to I
(01:08:18):
wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.
I now joined my former partners on this venture, already
in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me, Fellas Bier. Let
me ask you a question as you get back to
your watching everything, track and everything. Do you think Conrad
(01:08:43):
Gregor has fought his last fight in the UFC And
he said he didn't say you retired from USC. He
said he'd retire from the sport formerly known as mixed
martial art. Yeah, so I would say if it was
a m M A fight, Yes, I think he I
think he won't fight again. What about you, Ryan Music?
(01:09:07):
Do you think so? I do not think he's done fighting,
though you're wrong. I'm just in mixed martial arts, he's uh,
he's only fought five times, one wins, um, he has
four losses, and of course he has one boxing match
that made him a good chunk of money, that being
(01:09:27):
against Floyd money Mayweather, where he made a crazy, crazy
amount of money. He's had several injuries. One that's that's
kept him out and derailed him during his mm A career. Um,
his first loss was in two thousand sixteen, so it
hasn't been that loss because you know he's had He's
(01:09:47):
had the couple of fights with Nadas as well. UM,
I don't know. This is interesting. What about you, Ramos?
What do you think? I think he fights again. Music
you said he did write music. Music said he did.
Comgregor made thirty million dollars supposedly in that Floymeyweather fight.
(01:10:09):
Let's say he's made forty or fifty million from his
mm A fights all told. He put it all in
and he does have a he does have a pretty
good brand in the m m A world. I don't
think there's any question he comes back and fights one.
(01:10:30):
He I mean, like, look, it's he's already being mentioned
in this domestic assault thing or is it a sexual assault?
Sexual assault thing that that being investigated for today he
said the other go ahead. It's still ongoing. That's that
was in his people said that he's already spoken with
police in January. This is back from December. They don't
understand why this is a story today, but the investigation
(01:10:52):
remains ongoing. According to the New York Times, totally fair.
Like I'm you know, listen, I'm not gonna sit here
and tell you I know no one knows um. But
the news outside of the octagon for the most part
has not been good. Now, maybe you'd love to say, like, Okay,
he's going legit, and he's going legit. He's like a
(01:11:13):
mafia guy where now he's trying to get out and
he doesn't want to be in the octagon. He's got
a kid, he's got a little son, and he doesn't
want to get his brain bashed in or run the
or have cauliflower here, or he doesn't want any of
that stuff. He just wants to go and be a
dad and maybe train other guys and be a big personality.
That would be smart, and I'm sure he could make
(01:11:34):
a good, good living doing that. But when you're a fight,
fighter's fight, and fighters fight. Tell me the fighter that
didn't get carried out of the ring during his last
fight when he's a little bit over the hill, Like
they don't exist, They don't do that, They don't retire
there's no Barry Sanders in fighting. They don't retire in
(01:11:56):
their prime. Doesn't happen, you know, they limped to the
finish and then they get carried out. In many ways,
the boxing world, the M M A world, it's a lot.
I mean, like Daniel Cormier maybe the only guy. He's
got his fact like it. Listen, he's in his forties.
But Daniel Cormier is a guy who, like Bones Jones,
(01:12:19):
comes back and he's like, you know what, I'm good.
I'm on TV, made a bunch of money. I beat
I lost that guy twice, but he was on P. E. D. S.
I'm I know I don't have the hand speed, the
foot speed, the agility that I had in my twenties
and thirties. Like this won't end well. But DC is
not wired like kind of like commregrators a fighter. I
(01:12:41):
feel like M M A is like the Godfather. Right
just when you think you're out, they keep pulling you back.
I thought I was out, they pulled me back. They
pulled me back in Connor. Would you fight for ten million, no,
twenty million, no, thirty million, maybe forty million, yep. I
mean at some point they're they'll be a point. I
(01:13:02):
would love that every guy who came from nothing it
was like Lebron James, where they could buy into Blaze
Pizza and they could, you know, get into beats by
Dre and have TV shows and have money, you know,
have money that makes money. But the stories of like
the Alonzo Ball story, the a Lonzo Ball story where
(01:13:26):
some money manager guy makes off of his his money,
that's more what generally tends to happen. That's what tends
to happen, you know. And to anyone who says like
he'll never do it again, I think it was Dragon
Heart was the movie Sean Connery was in, Like Sean
(01:13:46):
Connery was knighted, he's Sir Sean Cornray, he's double O
seven like he's he's regal. And I can't remember. Was
Brian Regan, I think who had a comedic bit where
he's like, can you imagine the pitch to Sean Connery, Uh,
Sir Sean, Sir, Sir Sean Connery. We we'd like you
(01:14:06):
to play a dragon, and you'd like me to play
a dragon. Do you know who you're talking to? You'd
like to pay me? How much? I don't do it?
And especially when you're a fighter, came from nothing and
somebody says like, hey, here is seven zeros and then
(01:14:27):
the number next to it. Would you do it? So
the idea that sean that that Connor McGregor is just
gonna ride off into the sunset and he's good and
drink pina coladas and never lace him up in the
octagon ever again. Sorry, I just don't buy it. They
all get carried out in a stretcher in their last fight.
They just do come up next. Colin Coward things. Zion
(01:14:51):
Williamson is top twenty in the NBA even though he
doesn't play in the NBA. That's Next. Be sure to
catch live editions of the Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays

(01:15:41):
I was on Twitter and I saw something that was
a hot take. That take, here's a hot take for
all you. Zion Williamson. By the way, he put Zion Williams.
Did he put Zion Williams and Zion Williamson thinking pout
Zion Williams. Yeah, he already a top fifty current basketball
(01:16:02):
player in the world. Hashtag facts. That gets us to
something else we heard on Fox Sports Wonder Fox Sports Radio.
We call it. Say Okay, it's Zion williams Son And
here's Colin Cowherd's take top fifty. Of course he's a
top fifty player. The question is he a top twenty
(01:16:26):
basketball player in the world. Okay, all you need to
know is this USA Today, before the season started, came
out with a list. They came out with a list
of the top fifty NBA players. Gordon Hayward was thirty
one and Brandon Ingram was thirty three, Steven Adams, T
(01:16:46):
J Warren, Kyle Lowry, Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green. You don't
think NBA teams tomorrow would trade those players for Zion.
I mean you really think today Gordon Hayward Zion Williamson,
who's better? Toronto Raptors tomorrow could trade Kyle Lowry for Zion?
(01:17:12):
Are you kidding me? They couldn't pick up the phone
fast enough. And Kyle Lowry is a nice player. Okay,
stop it, you're comflating two different things. First of all,
I love Paul Pierce. I do. I played with them
a little bit in high school. We were kind of contemporaries,
graduated high school the same time. Um, it's Zion Williamson
(01:17:36):
and he's not a top fifty player. He's definitely not
a top twenty player. And what what what Collins doing
is he's complating would a team want him over their player? Yes,
I'm not denying like that's in terms of value of
an asset, he would be more valuable and have a
greater potential than Kyle Lowry. But he's not better than
(01:17:58):
Kyle Lowry. Right now has been an NBA All Star,
and Kyle Lowry is not having nearly as good a year,
and he may start at some point be over the hill.
But like, what are we doing? Do you know how
you lose games in the NBA without trying to lose
games in the NBA. Yeah, you tank? What do you do?
(01:18:21):
You play your young players? Do you know why? Because
they're not as good as the older players. They don't
know how to win basketball games. They're not as strong
and as smart, and as we're fined, they don't make
his higher percentage of shots, they make less, fewer mistakes.
That's why, Like, I'll just be honest, he's not right now.
I do. I think eventually he could be. Eventually he
(01:18:41):
could be at the level of the second best player
on the Raptors. But he's not better than Kawhi Leonard
of Pascal siakum Um, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry, like all
of those guys are better. Bass Marcus al is a
better basketball player right now just because he can't. Like,
are we doing this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
(01:19:04):
College basketball is way more water down than it's ever
been and Desigon is gonna be awesome, but we just
can't control ourselves. Oh my goodness. This is like the
college quarterbacks who comput like, man, he's this, he's that, Like, Hey,
Baker Mayfield was really good maker was great. Is he
(01:19:26):
one of the top ten quarterbacks the NFL. No, When
he played against good defense, he threw the same number
of touchdowns he did interceptions against bad teams. He lit
up bad teams. Why because they're bad teams. But like
this idea, I mean, he's not in the he's not
(01:19:47):
in the stratosphere of the elite players. He's not like
that would make him an NBA All Star better than
NBA All Stars. He's not, nor should he spe expected
to be. He's eighteen years old, he's six ft five
and a half two five pounds. He's not a top twenty.
He's not a top fifty player. And anyone who says
(01:20:09):
that everyone in basketball just goes like you're either saying
it for the hot take or you're not very smart. Right,
You're not very Here's a guy. Remember when Justice Winslow
came out. You're like, man, Justice Winslow is gonna be awesome.
And Justice Winslow has become a good NBA player. I
(01:20:32):
think it was the fourth pick in the draft. Now
that he's more refined NBA player and he's a small
ball four, you know, and what is this like his
fourth year in the NBA. He ever just thirteen points
a game. You know, like you may not know Josh
(01:20:54):
Richardson or remember from what or Goran Dragic, but they're
better than Zion Williamson right now. Now, I'd rather have
Zion Willimson, sure, because I think in five years, four
or five years II Wimson could be very very good,
potentially an All Star. But at eighteen years old, Like,
do you do you think he's take the Detroit Pistons? Okay?
(01:21:19):
Could he start in the Detroit Pistons ahead of Andre
Drummond or Blake Griffin? Like, come on, dude, Blake Griffin
was a dominant college player. He red shirted his first
year in the NBA. Do you think that he would
Blake Griffin would be slightly better? And Blake Griffin his
(01:21:40):
rookie year average twenty two and a half points a game.
That was after sitting out a year, and even then,
Blake wasn't considered a top twenty player in the NBA. No,
Blake Griffin does not jump like he used to, but
he's ten times the player that Zion is right now
because he's played a lot more in the NBA and
he's a better shooter and he's a better passer, and
(01:22:02):
he has you know, better court court sense to him, Like,
what are we doing? Why don't we have the tendency
to do? This is so dumb, smart people saying dumb
things is really odd to me, really really odd to me.
The way you lose in the NBA is play younger players.
Why because they're not as good. It's not a shot
at Zion to say he's not as good. Eventually he
(01:22:25):
may be as good or better than the elite players.
And that's why he's valuable to these teams, not because
he's better than these guys. Now that's what the Fox said. Yes,
Ryan Music, you know, Doug, I've been thinking a lot
about this. I've been running the numbers. I think Brownie Jr.
Is the top one player in the NBA right now.
Yeah Brownie, you know that's that's like saying Brownie would
be a top hunter player in high school basketball, like
(01:22:47):
he's in eighth grade. Dude, Just take a breath and relax.
Take a breath and relax. That's that's what we gotta do.
Take a breath and relax. Um. Well, he had a
bunch of the still to get to some coaching firing
I got to wait to hear this quote from Tim Miles,
who was relieved of his duties at Nebraska. We also
(01:23:09):
want to talk a little bit about these NBA teams.
Did you guys what is going on with the Oakland
City Thunder Celtics as well? A bit of a mess.
It's weird, like quietly the Bucks, the Warriors semi figuring
things out, whereas the other teams are are really not.
But Phoenix seems destined to have the second worst record
in the NBA. Last night they're go into Utah get
(01:23:32):
blown out. The bigger story is Devin Booker fifty nine
points and Utah not allowing him to get a shot
at sixty. Why I have no problem with what Utah
did next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

UF Tug God Leave show Fox Sports Radio. You know
what I try to do as a media member, because
I am a media member, and what we do as
media members sometimes as we say the media, the media like,
hey dude, you're on the radio. You're part of the media.
(01:24:18):
I try not get used, because dudes will smart guys
will use you. Feel like ESPN has been used a
little bit here by uh by Jason Kidd, Right, the
cow job comes open, Like, well, Jason Kidd could be
in the mix for it. No he's not. It's not.
And look I grew up idolizing Jason Kidd. I didn't
say he'd be a bad hire a cow. I never
said that. But he doesn't have his degree, so he's
(01:24:42):
not getting the job. He also, and this is a
long time ago, he had the domestic violence thing with
his ex wife and he had a d U I
like five years ago. Like that's those are hard sales.
But it's a non starter in any Division one school
if you don't have a bachelor's degree, you at minimum
and then factor in other things and you're like, it's
that and it's the UC system as well, which is
(01:25:05):
I would say, you know, obviously Berkeley is very liberal.
It it would it would take a lot for him
to get that job, including already having his degree, and
he doesn't have it. But I think that the succession
of that it gets leak. Mark Spears worked for ESPN
now and then he appears on the Jump and says
(01:25:26):
all of these glowing things like and how doesn't mean
that he won't have a shot at it. He might
that he has been discussed by people. I know they're
but I just I feel like like this is so transparent.
Where do you think they're getting this information? Sources close
to and oh there's Jason get on TV. Who do
you think the sources are? Speaking of? The NBA? Last night,
(01:25:51):
the Utah Jazz pummeled the Phoenix Suns one five. We
that is a beat down, an absolute beat down. In
that beat down, Devin Booker had a pretty good game.
You know, he had fifty nine points. That's all. Wow,
(01:26:15):
fifty nine points. Now, it should be point out that
the Jazz outscored the Sons by twenty one in the
fourth quarter. In addition to the fourth quarter, they also
fouled at the end of the game, so that Devin
Booker a Devin Booker could not get sixty points. Because
(01:26:35):
what happened was, well, quite simply, the Phoenix Suns decided, Hey,
we can't win this game. Let's turn over Devin Booker
and see how many points that he can get. That's it.
That's what they decided. That's what they did, and the
Jazz like, you know, we're already up thirty, we're just
gonna foul you, and you know, make sure that and
(01:27:00):
the Anthony Milton instead gets a chance to score some
points instead of Devin Booker. Why was Devin Booker in
the game late? So while some people watch it and
say what a what a clown show or a d
dB moved by the Utah Jazz, I think it's the opposite.
I think it's that same move with Devin Booker. And
(01:27:21):
he didn't play poorly, and he didn't shoot a bad
percentage and he was running a fever. But when you're
down thirty points, I don't know, you keep a guy
in the game just so you can put up some
you know, kind of a erroneous stat tunnel. I have
no problem. I have no problem in basketball with if
the team continues to play defense, you can continue to
(01:27:41):
play offense. That's like the uncontested dunk and at the
end of a game I don't like. But if it's
contested dunk, if we're still playing hard and still trying
to trap, and then you go score fine before dribbling
out the clock, then we shake hands. Nobody goes in dunks.
That's the general agreement. The same is true. And like
once it gets the twenty five, you pull your starters,
(01:28:02):
you get to your bench, and you let everybody get
kind of their stats up. Instead, Phoenix went the opposite away.
Phoenix decided, let's let Devin Booker go and try and
get sixty. And the Utah Jazz actually picked the easier
because what they could have done was just put him
into the station. Go ahead, drive in there and everybody
could go, go bear check in and put him in
the station. And they didn't. They didn't. Instead, they simply
(01:28:26):
fouled somebody else so he couldn't get sixty on him. Meanwhile,
the Jazz won ninety two. The Phoenix Suns have a lot,
a lot bigger problems then whether or not Utah is
gonna let Devin Booker get the ball to get to
(01:28:47):
get to sixty points. And this is not the last time,
excuse me, this is not the first time the exact
same thing happened to Devin Booker a couple of years ago,
scored seventy against the Boston Celtics. They took a picture afterwards,
Oh he's got set set seventy points. They lost. Who
takes a picture in the locker room after losing a game.
(01:29:11):
I wouldn't. It was the most point scored in a
thirty plus point loss in NBA history. What does that
tell you, Not that he's the greatest score ever, just
that he's the only score that's been left in the
game when you're getting beat by thirty. Well, many people
on social media, regular media, radio podcast have eviscerated the
(01:29:34):
Utah Jazz. I'm gonna sit here and say the bigger
issue I take is with Devin Booker being in that
game late, because what it's signified to his teammates and
to their desire to change their culture is there is
no real desire to change the culture. If you can
go for sixty, even if we lose the game, we're
going to celebrate it. That's not a great message. The
(01:29:58):
message should be I don't how many points I score.
I just want to win. And when Phoenix isn't, hasn't,
isn't winning, doesn't appear to be close to winning, and
you keep putting up huge numbers. I only think it
re establishes exactly what Phoenix is about, which is not winning.
Not winning. Now, I've never had a chance to score
(01:30:19):
sixty my career, I was forty four and that was
in a you know, hard fought overtime game. And and
I look back, and sure I wanted to get fifty,
but I would have traded in getting you know, had
we lost the game when I got had got forty four,
I would have trade that in a heart meat RPT
four you know, fifteen and a win. Stats are there
(01:30:42):
to give us some context, and the easy context is, uh,
Devin Booker can be unguardable, but his team is stinky
and he doesn't seem to have the building a lift
them to a higher level. Did you guys see the
nur Kits injury last night? What's crazy about the Nurkics
injury was he was having a great, great night, great night.
(01:31:05):
He had a compound fracture in his left leg. He
did not have any nerve or muscle damage. His his
leg basically broke in two places when he landed awkwardly
trying to get a rebound. Music Remind me, Ryan, Music,
remind me? Are you a one, two or three guy?
One is don't ever show it to me too? Is
show it to me once? Three is I can't see
(01:31:26):
it enough. I'm too I saw it one time this morning,
and I regretted it, but I'm happy that I at
least at least. It's one of those things where I'm like,
every time I do it, I go now, did I
really need to see that? Or could I have just
fully understood that his leg broke completely in half? Um?
(01:31:47):
But for some reason I always feel like I'm not
doing the justice if I don't at least see it
one time. Must have you seen it? I have not,
but I will see it one time and that that
would be enough. I send it to you. Sure, you
send it to me. That'd be good, all right? By
have you seen it? Oh? And I'm number one? I
don't want to see it? Well. The the interesting part
is he's laying there and his leg is clearly broken,
(01:32:10):
you know, clearly broken, like you can see the bones
sticking out of his left leg, and the ref is
trying to step over from the ref actually clips his foot.
Did you guys see that part of the video. I
did not because I quickly quickly turned away from it. Yeah. Yeah,
the ref just kind of makes contact with his foot.
It is nasty. You're sitting there going and you're you're
looking at it and you're like, wait a second, is
(01:32:32):
that his sock? Is there a lump in his sock? Like, No,
that's that's the bone sticking out. That's that's the bone
sticking out. I have watched it at least twenty times already.
I'm gonna watch it twenty more um in the next
five minutes. But coming up next. NBA insider Chris Haynes
(01:32:52):
joins the show. I want to I want to throw
this out maybe to you guys as well, any idea
why this is happening so much more like like Gordon
Hayward did it, Paul George did it, Nurk has just
done it. We've seen at the college level as well,
where guys are landing and breaking their leg in half.
And I will grant you that some of it is
just bad luck and landing on a foot and landing awkwardly,
(01:33:15):
but I don't ever remember it happening ever previously, and
now I've seen probably five or six of these in
the last five years. Carris Lavert did it this year,
but I guess it was just a dislocated ankle and
he's back playing already. I've heard people say almond milk
may because there's not that the calcium in that, But
(01:33:35):
I don't. I don't feel like Nurkicchen Gordon Hayward are
big almond milk guys. Are they? Maybe we'll have to
get Gordon Hayward on at some point I think was nasty.
Yahoo NBA insider Chris Haynes joins the show. Um does
does he have a problem with the jazz fouling in
order to keep Devin Booker from trying to go for sixty?
(01:33:58):
Or is he with me? And the issue is why
was Devin Booker going for sixty when they're down thirty plus?
What's wrong with the Oklahoma City Thunder from having Paul
George an MBB candidate, to look at how much Russell
Westbrooks improved to they can't beat anybody in there in
eight seed? Does this mean Billy Donovan's going back to college?
Like there's a lot of stuff going on there and
continued struggles for the Boston Celtics. We'll find out what's
(01:34:20):
really going on in all these locker rooms with Chris Haynes.
He joins us next. Be sure to catch live editions

(01:35:06):
a senior NBA inside for y'ah who Sports fam on
Twitter at Chris B. Haynes. Check out his podcast posted
up with Chris Haynes. Chris, I know how close you
are with Damian Lillard man um his first season, McCollum
goes down now now now, Nurkic goes down yesterday. Uh
that that was a tough one. Tough one to watch
(01:35:28):
um in a in an effort to not sound like
a complete jerk, I'm gonna sound like a complete jerk.
Doesn't everybody want to play? Portland's now in the NBA playoffs. Yeah,
I mean, you know a little bit. You know, hopefully
this murkings he can get back, so't be healthy. He was,
you know, he was having a career year. Man. You
had to see something like that happen, and just at
(01:35:49):
the time, you know, the time being right now almost
you know, nine games from you know, from playoff instants.
It's that's a tough blow. This insulation a mind me done.
Um what the Blazers went through, I want to say
it was about four or five years ago. Uh, we're
to Portland's when Wesley Matthews went down. I believe he
had to keep these injury and he went down and
(01:36:10):
they had just picked up um what was the car
and in the flower they had just signed him and
they just traded for him, and so he served as
a backup player. Um, he was filled that too while
starting to stop moving in. But they weren't the same
they worked the same team and uh Stick the Tomb
got injured that that same year, and so that's they're
dealing with a similar situation. Susie McCallum, like he's not
(01:36:32):
gonna be back until the start of the playoffs, and
they just picked up in his canter. He's gonna have
have them have a much larger role. But now they're
definitely a team that you know, you have to think
that though, that the opponents are kind of circling. I
want to try to get messed up with them. They're
they're going in the hoboat and they're going after all time. Yeah,
(01:36:53):
it's it's it's a bummer, um lost in all this
is what in the heck has happened to Oklahoma City?
Like what what happened? What would happened? I'll say that,
so where when Paul George went out with that shoulder injury,
he hasn't come back the same I'm going to you know,
I know there's other things, uh the basketball game that
(01:37:15):
you know, we can focus on and you know, but
I'm just saying, like Paul George was playing out of
his mind, and he hasn't been playing out of his
mind since he came back from that shoulder injury. And
he's not going out there and saying that it's still
bothering him or still have some little effects. But I
have to point for that because you know, Russell Westbrook,
you know, he shot that last night, but he's been
suing bad all season and so you know, that's the
(01:37:38):
only thing I can legitimately point to is just what
Paul George has not been able to do since coming
back from that enjury. And man, look they plumbed it
to the eighth spot, and it and it and it's tooking.
This stretch has taken Paul George out of serious m
v p UH consideration. So it's sad to see. But
at the end of the day, well, we're talking about
the playoffs and it ain't it ain't going be too
(01:38:00):
many first round match withses Juicy as the number one seed.
If it stands right now, the war is okay, see
in the first round. So I'm kind of hoping for
that right now. But definitely they okay, see us plummeted.
That's only they can really point to, uh, this Paul
George and his demons in that time. No, Paul Paul
George's shot in the month of month of March, he
shot from the floor. After shooting from the floor in February,
(01:38:25):
He's averaged ten points less per game in the last month.
You know, so he is he's just people are defending
him better and he hasn't been the same since he's
returned from injury. He's just been as been been, a
been a different guy as as you point out. But
there also seems to like there's some chemistry stuff there.
There's some talk of Billy Donovan and he's even Billy
Dovans even saying like he hasn't connected with these guys.
(01:38:47):
Do you think it's fixable? But look, this has always
been an ongoing issue with the Okay under you know,
even when Kevin Durant was over there chemistry issues, you know,
even Billy Donovan. I mean, you know, he got he
got an extension for God's sake. You know, even you know,
people calling for his head over the last couple of years.
And so those are always their things associated with a
(01:39:09):
Russell Westbrook team, And you know, I don't I don't
know what it is. I don't know. You know, people
call my stat Patner. You know, I think he you know,
I think he's great at what he does. Obviously he
has to be efficient at all this season offensively, offensive
rating numbers are down compared to year's product. There's a
there's just a lot going on. But you know that's
(01:39:30):
why I don't mean to just you know, pick on
Paul George. But you know, when he was playing at
m VP level, there was at one point where I
really thought I was gonna vote for him, like he
was gonna get my vote because I felt like he
was playing the best and just playing two ways. I
felt like he had a shot to not only get
the MVP award, but get the Defense Player of the Award.
He was playing that great. And now that he's kind
(01:39:51):
of come back down to Earth and everybody else is
still playing after the same sub part level now, I
think overall that's why we're seeing what we're seeing right now.
So but we talked about those issues and all, you know,
lack of pass there, lack of trust and everybody that's
always been there. I just think Paul Jordan's hits a
role of playing and being able to cover up a
lot of that. It's a great point. It's a great point. Um,
(01:40:14):
what's the status of the Golden State Warriors? And I
think they're gonna be all right? Man, I really do,
I really do you know that you know the couple
of years before, you know, I followed this team for
two years straight, every single game, and you know, players
are saying things that they wouldn't say on air, you
know they were bored this time of year. They were bored,
(01:40:35):
just bored out in mind, Border to Hill like that.
That was it. You got to a point where Steve
Kurtl was bored at one point when he allowed the
players to coach a full game. It gets the Phoenix
un something I've never seen before. I had the players
drilled up in the huddles or I played up and
but I have no doubt in my mind that like
when the when the postseason starts, they're talented enough where
(01:40:58):
they can just slip the switch. I really do believe that,
I really do. I'm not I'm not basing on I'm
not judging them on what they're doing right now February March,
because I thought they were concerned the other the other
couple of years I was talking about. I thought they
were concerned in February and March, and I'm like, no,
I don't know. You know that happens kind of they
kind of to to follow you in the postings. But man,
(01:41:19):
when you're that challenging, they know how to get it done.
So I'm giving them as their status or being back
to back champs. Uh three out of four years. I'm
gonna give them slack and just you know, based off
of the history, say that they will be able to
switch with posting the start. So I'm not concerned at all,
and I don't think it was fair. Super concerned. Doug
(01:41:40):
gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, okay, what
about the Boston Celtics. This thing you know, now you
got Huh, I'm concerned. I'm concerned, though. That's concerned right there. Um,
that's a serious issues. Uh, that's a serious issue over there,
like because you have to understand, like this team, they've
(01:42:03):
been up there there, like right when you thought they
would turn the corner, they get back there, they come
back down to earth man and you know, just when
he thought Kylie Lee was ready and taking that leadership roll,
he said some things that people can you know, interpret
as taking a shot up the coach. I'm I'm concerned.
I'm concerned. You know. A month ago, Kylie said he
(01:42:25):
was bored, and he said he just wants to get
to the playoffs. He tried to asked, answering questions about
what went wrong in the regular season. He just wants
to get to you know, you know, playing ball. Um,
Now I know he could step up because I covered
the Calves. I was a Calves beat riding before, you know,
so I know he could step I see what he
can do. But still his play has to be able
(01:42:46):
to work alongside the skill sets and personnel of his teammates,
and we're not seeing that consistently enough. So for them,
I am concerned. They remember this team they built themselves
on um such prominent this last year off of not
having a go to guy and being able to thrive,
Bratt Stevens was able to push the right button to
(01:43:08):
kind of coach this team like a college team. Well,
you can't do that now now that you bringing his
thoughts as in Kybye, Irv and Gordon Haywards. So that's struggling.
I'm not saying they can't get it together though, but
we haven't seen any signs that they can do this
consistent yet. So for them, I'm a law because there's
no history with them. There's no history with the personnel
that they have right now. That's why I'm a little compellic.
(01:43:30):
I'm with you. Doug gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio.
The the Rookie of the Year race was like decided
two months ago right, like, well, you know that that
was That's how most people handled it, where all right,
we know who's going to be the Rookie of the Year,
let's figure out who's gonna be the m v P.
But apparently no one told Trey Young, who's been unbelievable.
(01:43:55):
He's supposed to be hitting the rookie wall and he's
just broken that rookie wall down. Um. I still don't
I still don't think that as as impactful as his
numbers are. Uh. I still don't think he's the Rookie
of the Year, But it's getting closer. Where are you
on Rookie of the Year? Oh man? It pays me
(01:44:16):
to say this because you know, Trendy Young was on
my last week's Yest on my Posted up podcast, and
he said he felt like he's the best rookie in
the in this class. Um, he had a terrible month
of November. That's the only thing separating him from overtaking
Luca in this award. I think that's what I think,
that's what hurt him. And he talked about that, you know,
(01:44:38):
online show. Because he's won pretty much every Rookie of
the month a war. You know, he just got NBA
Player of the Week. That's NBA Player of the Week,
not rookie. And so he's putting on a show. But
one thing I can say about Luca is that he's
been consistent all the way through. There really hasn't been
a slump month for him. And I think when it
(01:45:00):
comes to and I talked about this on my show,
you know Doug, I think for trade he came in
and targeted, you know, people wanted to try him and
see if he was the real deal. Then people call,
you know, people saying he's a that's coming to step
and so he was a targeted person. I think Luca
was able to come in and kind of fly under
the radar in thisially. You know, you know, you know
how they treat you Apean players. They don't you know,
(01:45:22):
they don't they don't believe the hype, they don't believe
the legit. So Luke was able to get up to
a great start that he just he just kept it going.
So as of right now, uh, Luca would have my vote,
but I'm still gonna wait till the end of the year.
I know, eight or nine games can't do much, uh
to to swing my vote. But you know, I'm still wait.
But as it right now, it's hard to say, Luca,
(01:45:44):
it's not getting that award. Who's the MVP? Whoa you
know it was it was a three man race um
a couple of weeks ago. You know. It's just be
honest and James Harden, Um, God, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm.
I'm usually one of those guys who I tend to
(01:46:05):
give my vote to the player who may he may
be a top three player in the league, but he
has the team at number one, you know, the best record.
That would be honest. But what James Harden is doing
dou like god me like, you know, just when you
thought you're seeing everything you thought you've seen, you know,
(01:46:27):
everything with Russell Westbrook, you know, average and triple doubles
for you know, two seasons in the low is then
the numbers James is putting up the consecutive thirty point games,
and it's just it's r K out there, It's NBA
jam out there. It's it's ridiculous, and so so that
I really can't give you an answer right now because
that one is really going to why Because like I said,
(01:46:49):
I usually you hold my vote, uh for for a
player who's you know, top three and has the you
know team has the best record. But I gotta I
gotta wait, I gotta wait on this. But you know,
I'm gonna tell you right now, if you had if
I had to make a choice right now, basically question
James Harden. Yeah, okay, well yeah, yeah, it's hard, Like
(01:47:10):
I think I have to go with Joinings. I'm I'm
afraid to say that right there. I'm scared to say that,
but I think I would go with James right now.
I think I would. Well, I mean, obviously there's a
huge gap in terms of, you know, points scored, but
there's also a huge gap with everything else, skewing the
side of Janice is defensive rating is the second highest
in the NBA. He's though he's ball dominant, you know,
(01:47:33):
his his usage rating isn't his high um and you know,
the the and his team's one more so. I mean,
that's kind of when it comes down to, isn't it
It is? But at the same time, it's like, and
that's what and that's why it pays because any other
year it's honest, if I'm not swaying from that, that's it.
(01:47:55):
That's my standard for m v P. You know your
team has to win, but you know, James on this team,
you know, there's suffer injuries, the ain't have to play
three different ways throughout the course of the season just
to stay afloat, and he's been able to ride to
the case and each and every you know, every single time.
And so that's why I can't just dismiss it. You know.
(01:48:15):
That's why I'm kind of going away from how I
to differently vote on this award. And that's why I
said I want to I gotta wait. I want to
wait to the very end. But god, it's hard. It's
really hard to go against what James is doing. And
you could, you can ardently say Milwaukee has a deeper team,
has a better team. And I wouldn't have said that
earlier than in this season. But that's that's what it's
(01:48:37):
looking like right now. So that's that's a top right now.
Chris create stuff. Who's the Who's the Podcast? Guest this week,
the Marcus Cousins of the Go to State Awards. You know,
he had a lot to say, a lot of you know,
he people are gonna love this, you know, when you're
talking about getting guys on the show. Uh, the best
guests are the ones who just don't don't give an as.
(01:48:57):
He's one of those. He speaks to my candid open.
I think people are really enjoyed that awesome stuff posted
up with Chris Haynes. Of course check him out of
Yeah who Sports to follow him on Twitter at Christy Haynes. Chris,
great stuff. Thanks for joining us man. Thanks all right,
let's get you to Dan Buyer get an update on
what's going on in the world sports. But you got Dan,
Doug busy day and college basketball coaches a leaving here
(01:49:20):
and there and everywhere. Tim Miles out as the men's
basketball coach at Nebraska after seven years. Arkansas fired men's
basketball coach Mike Anderson after eight seasons, while b hyle
Us Dave Rose announced his retirement Iowa State. They're keeping
Steve Prome. He got a contract extension through five. The
Mets gave picture Jacob de Graham a five year contract
extension that's worth more than one d and thirty seven
(01:49:42):
million dollars. The contract will replace his current deal. It
also includes an opt out after two, a no trade clause,
and a club option for four with more than thirty
three million dollars. The only thing it doesn't guarantee are
runs from the Mets offense. Maybe a bad joke. The
Cubs have given picture Kyle Hendricks a four year extension
worth fifty five million dollars. Some news from the NFL.
(01:50:06):
Patriots are placed down at Rob Gronkowski on the reserve
retired list, while Patriots owner Robert Craftley did not guilty
to two misdemeanors counts of soliciting prostitution. NFL meetings, the
league voted to make the changes instituted on the kickoff
in while those are gonna be permanent now. The league
also voted to eliminate all blindside blocks. The Oakland Raiders
sun free agent quarterback Landry Jones will be back to
(01:50:28):
the Dug gottlib Show in ten seconds. But first a
word from Farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield
collision has a unique sound. Beetle bird poop, drone seen
it covered it dr Farmers Farmers under written my Farmers
truck Fire Insurance Exchange and affiliates products unavailable in every state. UM,
(01:50:57):
we gotta stop saying this. Zion Wimson is a top
fifty player thing right, Like why do we why do
we do this? Why? Why? Why why do we insist on?
This is just as insane to take as the Duke
could beat the Cavaliers take remember that from early in
the year. And then Duke turns around and loses the
game to Gonzaga and I'm like, Okay, so can can
Gonzaga beat the Cavaliers? No, Alabama could beat the Browns,
(01:51:25):
And so you can sit here and go like Zion is,
Zion is awesome as a college player. Yeah, he's going
to be a I think a very good pro maybe
a star maybe maybe, But I'm not sure if we've
like figured out how this entire thing works, right, Like
(01:51:45):
this entire thing, it's this sport is a little harder
at the top level than we're maybe giving it credit.
That's that's that's the that's the funny part about about
this whole deal is this board basketball is really hard.
And you know, the perfect example is this Duke team
doesn't shoot the basketball all that well. And while Zion
(01:52:07):
is starting to make threes, and I do think that
he will eventually be a very very good small ball five,
starting power forward, Like we understand that he's eight team
playing against kids, not playing against the best players in
the entire world. There's such a lack of true understanding
for how much better players are and get when they
(01:52:30):
get to the NBA and they get to their athletic
primes as athletes, uh and as as men in terms
of their their overall intelligence. But I saw Paul Pierce
say that he was a top fifty player in basketball
in the entire world, and I spit out my coffee,
and then I heard Coward said, forget that he's a
(01:52:51):
top twenty player. I'm like, what are we doing? Do
you guys remember the Dream Team? And can you guys
name the Dream Team? Music? Take take a shot? You
were like five at that? Yeah, I know. I was
just saying I think I could come close. Okay, wasn't
it m J? Magic Bird you ing? Mm hmm, I
(01:53:21):
think so. I know. The whole beef with Magic was
with um m J was that Isaiah Thomas wasn't on
the team. Um, there wasn't with m MJ did not
want did not want him on the team? Right, Um
you forgot you forgot the one Barkley and then wasn't
the one college player? Latern I was getting to that,
(01:53:42):
would you give me a second here, would you would
you just give me a second. Let's let's get to
the actually the players here, Okay, So David Robinson, Patrick Ewing,
Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Michael Jordan's Carmelo and John Stockton,
Chris Mullen, Charles bark Lee, Magic Johnson, and also Clade Drexler.
(01:54:05):
And then they added in Christian Lightner, who was who
was a great college player, great and was twenty two
years old as supposed to design being eighteen years old.
And it I mean like Christian Lightner was just he
was like the he was the the guy on the team, Like,
what is Christian Layner doing here? And he actually wasn't terrible.
(01:54:29):
He did not have the worst run of anybody. Stockton
didn't play all that much because I think Stockton was
hurt a little bit. He only played like two of
the games, played really well, but only playing like two
of the games. And Larry Bird had a bad back
and he didn't play all the time. But it's it's
(01:54:49):
fascinating for us to kind of like rethink history. By
the way, do you guys know who the leading score
was in the Dream team? And when they got to
the Olympics, Barkley Barkley. Now, part of it was Barkley
got to the free from line a ton, But at
the time, Barkley was arguably the best player on earthy
(01:55:10):
and he and Jordan's he was that was his during
his time of being in the best player on the
planet category. Um, but yeah, I mean like Christian Layner was,
you know, a great college player and he could shoot,
and he had no ego, and but he wouldn't have
really been a top twenty, top thirty, top forty, maybe
(01:55:33):
top fifty player in the NBA. Why because he was
at the college kid he hadn't playing in the NBA yet.
And eventually it's like even Trey Young who's putting up
these numbers, crazy numbers, like he doesn't make him a
top ten, top fifteen point guard, just putting up numbers
on teams that lose, and he's shooting the ball well
and make some remarkable place he has a chance to
(01:55:55):
eventually be in that conversation. But we're just comparing him
with the other rookies in the NBA are right now,
and he's probably gonna get a second in the in
the in the Rookie of the the Year balloting. Coaches and
owners in the NFL are at odds over a potential
rules change. What is it by now? Next? Be sure

Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio like my job A great deal?
Do you guys know that Castaco brother posters are Have
(01:56:57):
you ever seen those buy or probably know more about him?
They're sports posters, right, those guys reached out to me there,
so there we're gonna basically and and this is I
don't decorate my own house. I don't my wife has
a keen eye for this straight guy. She does. And
(01:57:17):
but I have said, like, hey, what about Hayes's room,
my son's room. She's like what about it? I was like,
you kind of got some cheesy stuff up there. It's like,
what do you mean, Like, hey, you kind of got
like it's a little cheesy. It's like, oh, you can
do better. It was like, actually I can. I So
they sent me a bunch of posters. We're thinking, I'm
thinking like wall to wall and ceiling sports posters. What
(01:57:40):
do you guys think from from the eighties and nineties
or like newer ones? Oh no, the old school ones. Yes,
would he'd be like, that's the cool He'll have the
coolest room on record, at least without you and all
your friends. Now, now his friends may have no idea
who these players are, but it doesn't matter. There's like
they're so classic lead dorky. They're kind of cool. I
(01:58:02):
don't know if they're dorky. They're just anyway pretty excited
about You can google it. I'll send out pictures. So
when when we get it all set up, let's get
to the press. Now, wait, the press representative buyer of
Virginia representative buyer. What do you have, my friend? Patriots?
Solder Robert Kraft pleaded not guilty to too misdemeanor counts
of soliciting prostitution in Florida and with that, as part
(01:58:26):
of today's court filing, Craft has requested a jury trial
in the case. You want to be on that jury. Wait,
he's getting this is going to trial? Yes, zero chance
it goes to trial. Well, no chance it goes to trial.
Zero juror number fourteen. Have you ever been to a
(01:58:48):
MSUs parler zero? No chance, no chance it goes to trial,
zero chance it goes to trial. We ask you, jury,
do not turn away when the video starts to play.
You at it? You must, oh, pour acid in my eyes,
(01:59:14):
Pour acid on my eyes. Zero. Oh, just another another
notes in the day of the New England Patriots, you
did put Rob Gronkowski on the reserve retired list. Albert
Brier the MMQB dot Com says that the thirty two
NFL head coaches crafted a proposal to add an official
(01:59:37):
in the booth to oversee clear and obvious mistakes like
defensive past interference, offensive past interference roughing the passer. That
coaches then voted thirty two to zero to present it
unanimous vote, but the NFL is not planning to vote
on it. Brier says that some head coaches aren't happy
with the NFL's decision. So's something that the coaches were
(01:59:59):
all war that sky judge the NFL not going for it.
I think the NFL is being smart on this thing. Man.
We once you open up indoors box, the games get long,
which I just, I just I agree with the idea
of we can't make something perfect, it's gonna be an
imperfect game, you know what, Like we know what's crazy
(02:00:20):
is why are we doing this when we still can't
figure out why don't we have a sensor or in
the ball, So like there are plays where you cannot
see the ball. You can't see when when a player's
knee hits the ground and where the ball is. Maybe
you simply put a tracker in the football and you
got a billion dollar game and people worried about one
(02:00:41):
review a half. Why are we Why are we worried
about a spot every time? So it's the spots, right,
you got like this chain gang made up of like
guys that are too old to to apply for Social Security.
I don't know, it's just about right. Sure, first, oh shunny,
(02:01:02):
like why are we we're fixing the wrong part of
the game. On My Sunday Show when Ryan Music used
to produce it, I joked that the NFL would sell
their the rights to the ten yard chains, like if
Johnsonville it would be you know, just if they got
twenty million dollars for Johnsonville to sponsor, it would be
(02:01:22):
the Johnsonville sausage chain. And you just have links of
I think that's amazing. Yeah, I think that's actually that's brilliant.
That is brilliant. Like why hasn't Subway, I mean Subway
took enough? Uh, you know, their last spokesman didn't work
out so well. Why haven't they gotten on this right?
Like something to do with yardage and footlongs and subway subject.
(02:01:47):
I will say I'm more pleased that it popped up
in Ryan Music's head when you started to mention it,
because he just gave me the thumbs up that he
was thinking the same thing too. From our Day's Sunday
Morning Together, the my Me Harold reports, the Miami Dolphins
reached out to the Lions about trading for quarterback Matthew
Stafford prior prior to the start of the season, Adam
(02:02:09):
Gaze making a call to Matt Patricia for Stafford Services. Well,
you think you want to give us your quarterback, you know,
like the only thing you got. He's like no, but hey,
good on you for asking. Yeah, give it a shot.
Also shows what they felt of you know, Ryan Tannehill
status as well Arkansas Ryantaniell has done anyway, right, Yeah,
but this was at the start of last season. Like
(02:02:35):
Arkansas fired Ben's basketball coach Mike Anderson after eight seasons.
Tim Miles out after seven seasons at Nebraska, really is
you're fired, absolutely fired. Um, that's a it's a bummer
for for Tim Miles, it really is. Um. Good guy.
Mike Lewis's assistant and Jim mulinary assistant good friends of mine.
(02:02:59):
I do think Fred Hoiberg gets that job. I do
think Tim Miles gets another job. I don't think it'll
be Washington State. Um, it may take a year off,
but you know, this is why you have a sizeable buyout.
And what's crazy is last year he won thirteen games
the Big Ten, they didn't get the ins a tournament.
If he gets in that tournament, He probably still has
a job today. If you all got a crew, you've
(02:03:19):
got to have a followed guy in it. Yep. Iowa
State gave Ben's basketball coach, Steve prom a contract extension
through well. That happened because Alabama came open. He's at Alabama, alum.
The Heat are retiring Chris Bosh's number one jersey tonight
as they host the Orlando Magic. M hmmm, I was surprised,
Actually you were surprised. What the Chris Bosh gamers number
(02:03:46):
of times he signed for that ridiculous contract. Yeah, I don't.
I guess he's the third best player on the two
championship teams. Yeah, you're gonna have Yourdonnis has them get
his number retired as well, So four players from that
team gonna have their jerseys retired quickly. He does has
(02:04:06):
some like the ultimate culture center, right, that's why he
got it. And they're like, what are you're gonna retire you?
Donnas has some don't you retire Chris Boss? Like Okay,
Bucks rockets tonight Janice against Harden in Milwaukee, bag it
out there and pressed that was the press, no load
management in Milwaukee. They're they're going for no no load management. Um, well,
(02:04:27):
look in an hour they might vote on a proposal,
but I don't think they will. No more replay still
gotlip show.
