(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in to Monday's podcast.
I'll tell you how I know Ezeki Elliott is too sensitive. Plus,
three time Super Bowl champion Matt Chatham tells me if
Antonio Brown has completely lost it over this helmet controversy.
Doug Gotleap Show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you from beautiful,

(00:44):
sunny Southern California, where not a lot of drama. I mean,
I guess a little bit of drama in the National
Football League. Doug Gotlap Shows brought you by Farmers. At Farmers,
we've seen almost everything, so you want to cover almost anything.
When it's game time, have an experienced player help you
stay at the game, put their experience in and play.
At Farmers dot com. Are Farmers well, well, well, it

(01:07):
turns out that tough guy Zekey Elliott is nothing more
than sensitive guy Ezeki Elliott right after week's upon weeks
of this holdout. First, the soft holdout, well, he might
hold out. He might not. Well, if he doesn't get
what he wants, if he's not paid, then he might.
That's just that's the soft holdout. To the hardcore holdout,
just don't show up to the good cop bad cop

(01:30):
of Jerry and Stephen Jones. He's great, but at what
cost is great? Now he's offended. That's the that's the latest.
All right. So here's what happened. Um, a rarely a
fairly unknown running back, right, That's that's how I would
That's how I describe him. Fairly unknown running back draft

(01:54):
pick for the Dallas Cowboys had a really good game
in a pre season game, all right. They took on
the Rams. It was in Hawaii. Now, it should be
pointed out that the Rams didn't bring pretty much all
of their starters or didn't play pretty much all of
their starters, because it was in Hawaii, and the Rams

(02:15):
told us when we were at Rams camp, it's a
ridiculous trip for us. Remember the Rams had training camp
that we attended. Then they had uh scrimmages with the Chargers.
Then they went up to Oakland and scrimmage with with
the Raiders. Then they flew out on Thursday, played on Saturday,
came back Saturday night. So it it's not like Tony

(02:38):
Pollard was going against you know, the RAM defense that
went to the Super Bowl. But Tony Pollard was very,
very impressive, really impressive. He had five carries forty two
yards and looked like a guy who's in NFL running back,
you know. Yeah, by the way, he's a fourth round
draft pick, fourth round pick. So the Cowboys were sort

(03:02):
of protecting themselves from this sort of Zeke nonsense by
going and getting a quality guy who's twenty two years
old at the University of Memphis. He play well, No
one's saying he's ZEKEI Elliott. After the game, Jerry Jones
was asked about it. Look your best negotiator with z Now,

(03:28):
that's funny, right, it's clever, it's funny, and by the way,
it was set up by a reporter just you know,
doesn't mean anything until we get a report from Zeke's
agent that he didn't think it was funny, and neither
did Ezeki Elliott. Keep in mind, you go back two
weeks ago and Jerry Jones said, you don't have to

(03:49):
have the leading rusher in the nash Football League to
win the Super Bowl. How does he know? Zeke Elliott
led the league in rushing last year, let it in
the league and rushing two years ago, and of course
uh DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing five years ago.
None of them ended up taking the Cowboys to the
Super Bowl, let alone the NFC Championship Game. But if

(04:10):
anything like, that's the kind of thing that should be offensive.
Not the joking laughing, Hey, let's celebrate Terry Potter, Terry Porter,
Terry Porter, Terry, Tony Pollard against the twos and threes
and even fours of the l A Rams. That's that's

(04:31):
that's the kind of thing that should be offensive. Offensive
is now like Tony pothered Zeke who And I've said
this to people for a long time. You know, the
funniest people should be the happiest people, shouldn't they The
funniest people should be the happiest people. But if you've
ever met have you ever met most comedians? Not Seinfeld,

(04:54):
he seems to be totally happy, But most comedians are
miserable dudes. They just are They just are not happy,
and their outlet is finding ways to make fun of
themselves and others, because that's what brings them their rare
joy and that's their skill in life. But in life
they're not usually happy. The funniest people should be the

(05:17):
happiest people. Hell, if I was funny enough to be communient,
I feel like I'd tell a joke made myself laugh
every single day. But a lass, that's not the way
it works. And then you have and then you have.
The people who should be the most confident are the
people who are the most successful, right Like, if you're

(05:40):
a success in life, you should have great confidence. If
you're ZEKEI Elliot right now, and somebody says, Tony Who,
that's what exactly what Zeke Who? You should be thinking,
Tony Who? Come on, he's just joking. But that's not
the way it works. The most successful people in life,
oftentimes for the most insecure people in life, they just are.

(06:02):
You know. Jay Leno, for example, for years, would never
take a day off. Why not. He wouldn't take a
day off because he was afraid they would find somebody
to replace him and ultimately he'd be left looking for
a job. That's what he that's what he thought. That's
what he wondered. That's obviously not the case, nor will

(06:24):
it probably ever was it ever the case. Even when
they tried to pull him off the air, they couldn't
like it ended up being kind of the reverse, right,
that's kind of maybe the maybe the ultimate irony too
to uh to Jay Leno is they tried to replace
him and the numbers just plummeted and they had to

(06:45):
bring him back, which was the opposite of his fear.
But his fear, his inner insecurity, was I can't take
a night off because they find to fill in for me.
Somebody will find that fill in to be funnier than me,
and I'll be out of a job. And the opposite happened.
So Zeke Elliott and his whether it's insecurity or or

(07:10):
his uh millennial nous, just this idea that celebrating Tony
Tony Pollard's great day, that the local media setting Jerry
up for the funny line and Jerry delivering on it deadpan,
is in fact funny and you're way too sensitive. Not

(07:33):
only should a star football player not be so so sensitive,
but the sport where you're supposed to be the toughest
of guys like that. That's like Zeke's whole thing is like, Hey,
I'm not just a good running back. I block, I catch,
I absorbed contact. I'm tough for the other guys. Those
should be the toughest guys, but they're not. Oftentimes those

(07:56):
are the guys that are softest in life. You know.
That's that's the way it generally works. Stuck gotlim show
here on Fox Sports Radio, and and if I'm the Cowboys,
I'm fine where I am. I look at their early
season schedule. I see the Giants, I see the Redskins,

(08:18):
I see the Dolphins. I see three and now, yes,
of course it backfired when they didn't have Emmett Smith,
but Dak's playing with a supreme amount of self confidence.
He has shown up for everything. Why would you relent
and reward Zeke Elliott, who's now getting sensitive, And he's
probably getting sensitive because he's nervous that he's not going

(08:39):
to get the ultimate contract he wants, nor should he,
nor should he. I think he's tremendous, But I also
think that it's fair to say, um it's it's fair
to say that he's he's only super valuable to the

(09:00):
how Boys which doesn't mean he's actually that super valuable.
And they knew exactly what they were doing when they
drafted Tony Pollard to give them a young, fresh pair
of leggs that they could use up if, in fact,
Zeke Elliott pulled one of these, which is what he's
doing alright. Three times Super Bowl champion Matt Chatham's gonna
join us upcoming next. What does he think about Zeke Elliott?

(09:22):
How would Bill Belichick handle situation like this? Plus what
should the Patriots expect from Josh Gordon? Right? Josh Gordon
back with the new England Patriots. We got all this stuff,
We got Antonio Brown, things to get to um. Aaron
Rodgers back at practice. Antonio Brown was back apparently at
the facility today. We got all constitutions in neat Football League.
Three times super Bow champ Mat Chatham will join us

(09:43):
up coming next. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug got Leap Show week days at noon eastern
three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio app. Doug got Leap Show rolls on here
on Fox Sports Radio. Matt Chatham is a three times
Super Bowl champion, kind of just in some time, but
this year on Fox Sports Radio and now we we

(10:04):
were we were getting into a couple of different things.
Apparently Zeke Elliott's bothered by the Okay, bothered by h
We'll get to Matt in a second. Um, the Zeke
story is really really funny. I just I find it.
I find it comical. You know that I find it
comical that, uh here Zeke is I think, as well

(10:29):
rounded running back as there is, as tough running back
as there is. And you know his argument is, hey,
I'm the best in the sport. That's the prime of
my career. I want to be paid now. It's completely dismissing.
This is the thing that actually makes me furious, furious.
I don't care what guys make, but I don't like
when they lie to people to like, well, you know,

(10:50):
a salary this year is due. You get sixteen million
dollars before he steps on the field. Like there was
a huge fight when there was a lockout in the
nash Football League because players were tired that the rank
and file and the veteran players didn't like the rookies
like Sam Bradford getting fifty million dollars per before they
ever threw a pass. So they reworked it, and rookies

(11:14):
contracts are made into four year guaranteed deals, and depending
upon how they could word it whatever, you basically could
front load the deal. So Zeke Elliot's deal is mostly frontloaded.
Fourth pick in the draft. It's probably worth about twenty
five million or so, but he got sixteen up front.
So what they do is they tell people like, look,
I'm only making a you know, a million dollars this year,

(11:37):
is not right, dude, that guys, the guys making forty
Like you, dude, you made sixty million dollars when the
best running backs weren't making weren't making ten. Like it's
a complete distortion of the facts. And this doesn't have
it like I don't care, but I lose no sleep
over it. But what you're gonna do is you overpay

(11:57):
Zeke Elliott and something else is gonna suffer. And those
things that suffer are the things that allowed Zeke to
be successful. The same goes for Dac And I don't
think that Doc is as good at what at his
job as Zeke is at his job. But Doc is
harder to replace than Zeke. Is that that's really it's

(12:19):
it's a it's a war type of argument. Wins above replacement.
How hard is it for you to be replaced? Zeke Elliott?
Hard but not impossible. You get three guys, you get
Tony Pollard, get a couple other guys out the street.
Lex C. J. Anderson was was just as good, not
better than Todd Hurley Lake. This can be done. You know,

(12:41):
James Conner wasn't a first round draft pick, played at Pittsburgh,
had cancer, amazing story. Is he as good as Levy
on Bell? No? But is he at a million dollars
better than Levy on Bell at fourteen million dollars? Yes?
He was more cost effective the the winds above replacement
with not that many. Now, if you want to say, hey,
that the Steelers win one more game, they go to

(13:03):
the playoffs, maybe they go to the super Bowl. That's
a fair argument. But if we also saved thirteen million dollars,
we were able to spread it around, and maybe that's
one of the reasons that James Conner was ever being
more successful. This is the way it works. So it works.
It's called having a budget. NFL players, NBA players, Major

(13:23):
League Baseball players. They pretend that there's some world that
exists where there's no such thing as a budget. You know,
necessary the home, my house, I was gonna say the
home that I live in, the house I live in. Okay,
we're still like we we've done basically half of a remodel. Alright,

(13:47):
so we read to the kitchen floors, took off wallpaper
and popcorn ceiling and painted and you know, we're paint
the whole outside of the house the inside of the house.
Rewired it. But but look, we don't we have a
finite amount of resources. So we put the greatest amount

(14:07):
of money into the kitchen. Why because that's the way
you spend all your time. That's where you spend all
your money. And then in our next phase, we're gonna
do the bathrooms, but the most of the resources gonna
be put in the master bathroom. Why that that's where
you spend your resources. But you can't spend too much
because you don't have anything left for the other bathrooms.
And then Ramos is gonna win the lottery and buy

(14:29):
me a pool. That's just gonna do. Matt Challam joins
us on The Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
I'm gonna play for you, Jerry Jones after the Saturday
afternoon in Hawaii preseason game. Tony Pollard has a nice game.
Here's kind of the playful back and forth. What you're
best negotiator with z pol the Matt thanks for joining

(14:57):
us that the reports are that Zeke's agent and Zeke
himself were bothered by this. It felt like, uh, it
felt disrespectful. Uh when you hear does that sound disrespectful? Yeah? Absolutely.
I don't good luck finding a player that wouldn't. I mean,
especially when you have a you know, a few a
few seasons relationship with that owner and nobody overreacts the

(15:20):
preseason games. I guess the big takeaway from me here
is how would that help you in negotiation? Do you
think do you think as uk Alt it really believes
that that he can be dismissed by one, you know, preseasonformers,
probably young player, probably not. So it's just to antagonize
and to me or even if it's just a slip
of the tongue, it's a very foolish one. So I
don't know the whole idea here is to bring people

(15:40):
back to the table that that's certainly not going to
do it. Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with you. I just
I don't understand it. Like he's never said a bad
word about Zeke. He said he deserves to be a
top paid guy. Was clearly joking right, and he was
asked a question about it, like I don't like Zeke, Ellie,
it's a big boy. He knows how good he is.
This is more you know, his cost value. I just
I think we've gotten to the maybe we've gotten to

(16:02):
the place in negotiation where nothing's funny anymore. Like that,
that's not that doesn't that doesn't strike you as like
pretty obvious he's joking. He may be joking, but let's
put it this way. He did site when this thing
was the person went down with sort of like goofy
replaceability metric thing with with running backs, which is so
flawed it's it's not worth even getting into. But the
notion that a guy that is dramatically different than the

(16:25):
rest of his people, and that's the people that play
at this position, there's only a handful of guys are
gonna perform on a down and down up basis like
Zeke does. If if if the argument position from the
person who's making the joke is that it kind of
doesn't matter. You're st running back, running back to your commodities.
And then he makes that joke. It's not it's not
as if, hey, you know, balls can't be busted, No
big deal. His joke cuts right to the to the

(16:46):
base of what he's arguing with the other guy. That
goes to the guy's pocket. So he's not gonna find
that funny. I mean, let's put it the other way.
If if zeke in some sort of TMZ interview, it's
Jerry who I mean, you know, because he wants to
be traded and would like to go elsewhere. I mean,
I imagine Jerry'd probably take it the same way. Matt
Chadam joining us on the Dug Outlet Show here on
Fox Sports. Ready, he right for the athletic You also,

(17:07):
if you watch a Patriots preseason game, he's the color analyst.
This this doesn't ever seem to happen with the Patriots. Why, uh,
you know, I don't want to just give it exclusively them.
I think there's a lot of places that doesn't happen
with and uh, there's just sort of a general sense,
at least at the ones that I'm most familiar with,
of trying to avoid distractions, trying to mute them in
the event that they're out there, trying to distance yourself

(17:28):
from them if they they start to creep up, and
also trying to pick the people in house that are
going to avoid them. You can't battle thousand on those
kind of things, obviously, But the bigger issue is sort
of coming to sort of an agreement about how things
operate in house and going out of your way to
keep them in house, because it's not as if they're perfect.
I mean, we we all had our arguments and disagreements
and things like that in house. I mean I can

(17:49):
remember multiple muted we'll call it equipment issues over the years.
But we're not going to get to the situation where
someone is not practicing because they don't like their helmet.
It's something where they'll they'll be showing those those helmets,
the fifteen different varieties throughout the league. They'll make those
decisions on their own, quietly, without bringing that to an
agent or to uh, you know, to to the podium.

(18:11):
You don't need that. So I think part of it's
just operate how how you choose to operate, And it's
just because they believe so strongly in that distractions can
keep you from getting to your golf. If you happen
to be in a place that said, ask boys will
be boys and say whatever you like, and we'll pull
it all together on game day and things that work. Well.
They may not be as bothered by this, but it

(18:31):
tends to be a place that just wants to stay
away from that kind of stuff. Match Adam, who's three
times Super Bowl champion, color analysts for the Patriots radio
network in the preseason games, kind of spend some time
with This is the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
The big news for the Pats is that Josh Gordon
is now back in the National Football League. I didn't
it doesn't feel like a surprise because we saw him
playing catch with Tom Brady. Because nikkil Harry got he

(18:54):
had to give that number back. Um, But what does
it do to this team who has been I mean
the reason they traded for him last year was they
were searching for somebody outside the numbers. Well, it's it's
certainly a boost. I think he'd be a boost anyone's roster,
any of the thirty two. But to get a guy
like that back in the midst of a bit of transition.
I would call it with their wide receiver group, uh,

(19:16):
in part because they've got a tremendous amount of talent
in the room, but you don't have a lot of
you know, pass catches yet. Julian Edelman was off the charts,
but Jewels was coming back from a thumb injury. I
was out there at practice today for the first time
without at least it appeared from just the far away
photographs stuff because we were limited media today, but didn't
have the little brace on the thumb or anything like that.
So he looks like he's getting back and getting ready
up to speed. But in the absence of say the

(19:38):
Gordon edition, a lot of the other bodies are super talented,
but they're young people. You know, it's Nikkil Harry, first
round pick from Arizona State, been tremendous. But you know,
anytime with the first year wide receiver, it's an unknown.
Even if it's O. B. J, Julio Jones, whatever it is,
usually don't come out of the gates getting thousand yards seasons,
So you're looking at a relative uncertainty from two down,
you know, two, three, four, whoever it may be. This

(20:00):
also in the greater context of having no Gronk on
the field, So I think what adding Josh back in
is it adds another known that I think at least
if we're talking sort of Patriots Nation kind of talk, Uh,
they're gonna be more settled. They say, Okay, that's there's
a relief, there's something, I know, something that's more predictable
relative to production when he's playing. But in saying that, man,

(20:21):
it's been a really interesting camp because of nikkil Harry,
because of this young guy in Jacobe Myers from NC
State that's just been lighten it up with really all
three quarterbacks, with Tom but also with Brian Hoyer and
with the Steadham the young guys, so they seem to
have a lot of new exciting answers. But the nons
are Julian and Josh and they haven't been on the field. Yeah,
it's kind of amazing. And of course taking right and

(20:41):
he we we feel like they can run the football.
Although Gronk was a big part as a tight end
as a blocker, we feel like that's the other part
to it, which we won't see until the regular season.
What about Tom Um You know, look he's forty two
and that what he he wasn't as good late as
he was early, but some of that is all. The
competition is better late than it was early. What's your

(21:03):
assessment of how he looks so far in the preseason.
He looks like the same guy. I mean. One of
the big challenges, you know, for being a teammate histors
so long you have a certain perception. And then I
played for the Jets through a few years, so I
have a perception looking back across the sideline, and then
be an analyst here for almost a decade watching you,
you have to It's very difficult to go up and
sit on that hill and put on the binoculars and

(21:24):
try to watch his practices and then his his joint
practice stuff, and say, can I tell a difference today
at forty two from thirty two if I didn't have
the program in front of me and I was just
looking at some guy named twelve. But I know he's
forty two years old, and and that's I think the
indeterminable thing. Right now, he doesn't look much different, I mean,
if at all. You'd be really hard pressed if you
could write down, here's the twenty attributes at the quarter has,

(21:44):
here's what Tom's been throughout his career, which one is different?
I mean, if you're really split in hairs to find
one or two, it's it's not. It's the same guy.
It's very, very difficult to distinguish him from ten years ago.
And you know, everyone sits and waits for something to change.
As we sit here now it has. It's so um.
I think it's exciting. He was actually really strong down
the stretch a year ago. I mean, because some of
the biggest games are the Chargers games, the Chiefs game,

(22:06):
and the numbers are big without the touchdowns in the
Rams one and was biggest in the moment that you
need him to be and that's what Tom's kind of
always been about. So I think they're excited. I think
it would probably be a different story of say, you know,
smoking for eight games and then just sort of fall
off down the stretch. But he was aided that, like
any quarterback in the league would be with the really
strong running game, as you mentioned Doug, and that was
that was something where Tom I think was third only

(22:30):
to Jared Goff and uh and to h Drew Brees
down in New Orleans. Quarterbacks who were under center, under center,
more strong running games, with both those programs. Patriots are
right behind it, and they really kicked in running the
ball more after that Steelers lost late a year ago.
So you get him under center, let him be a
full offense guy. Uh, handleball if more, don't gotta throw
forty five times. But in the moments where hey we

(22:52):
gotta go two minute, we're gonna spread it out, much
like happened in that Kansas City game. He's the same
guy there. So uh, they seem to be managing the
kind of guy they have perfectly. And they built up
that offensive line in the strong backgroup to help help
buff for the whole thing. Matt Chad, I'm joining us
on the Dug Outlum Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
I did I do want to ask you about Antonio Brown.

(23:12):
Drew Rosenhaus came out a couple of hours ago on
Colin Cowherd show and said, we're closer to a resolution.
Didn't we have resolution with the arbitrator? Like didn't even like,
aren't we all clear? Like just where the different helmet?
Help me out? Dude, you play in this league a
long time, you cover this league. I feel like we
already have the answer, and it's like we keep going
around around in circles until finally Antonio Brown's like, Okay,

(23:34):
now I'll wear the new helmet. Yeah it's weird. I'm
gonna go out on a limb here and guess that
if you step into that locker room and you got
at this point in the way, nine other guys who
are wearing various other helmets, they're probably scratched, are going
their head going, what the hell are you talking about?
Like it's one thing, and that one of the biggest
thing he cited was comfort and being used to the thing.

(23:56):
He've been around it for a while and sort of
that there may have been a vision issue, you know,
if that helmet were cut a little bit different around
sort of your sidelines left and right, or there was
you know, dramatic gift over the brow from one helmet
brand of the next. I mean, I know there are
different cutouts. I mean, Brady has had his issues with
different versions well from just comfort sake, but he's wearing
the radio stuff inside there too, and there's different considerations

(24:17):
for a quarterback. But I'm really having a hard time
figuring out how if it's just a matter of sightlines,
how one of those other fifteen models doesn't have something
that's least comparable like I just don't get that. And
to quote safety here, I think one of the biggest
things that if as players were going to hammer that point,
we can't get behind the weird ones like that. You know,

(24:38):
if you're going to call this a safety issue where
you're sighting safety for the one that the safety boards
said released safe, we're kind of out in a weird
place here. Let's just go back. If you're gonna sit safety,
you should be sighting. I have to be given one
of these ones that certified, not I have to wear
the one that is. It just doesn't make any sense.
Did you hear what I heard? I basically heard Mike
Mayock's voice like, Okay, dide, we've had enough well and

(25:02):
trust me, this is the NFL its Generally, the b
S level is low. You know, there's gonna be certain
things taken to the microphone and we have to kind
of play this dance and you have to play a
dance with a with an agent. Then players, in fairness,
we want to get the best possible scenario for ourselves.
But this is one where you're going to get side
that from every other person in the room. It's like, dude,
what are you what are you talking about? Like, just
you know, let's let's get this thing straight. And it's

(25:23):
not it's not a it's not that there's an issue
with a player needing to get that result. You know,
if if you have an issue, you have some very
particular one A lot of guys do. But how did
it get to be a national story? How did you
ever get to the point where you weren't ready to
go out to a practice for that? I mean, this
is not news. This is something that could have been
handled in March or April or whatever it may be. Yeah,

(25:44):
and it feels like I can't I just cannot tell
what his ultimate win is in this. I just I don't.
Maybe he doesn't want to practice, but supposely he's a
great practice player and here already this time burning his
feet in the cryo chambers. So I don't I really
struggle to struggle to to get that one. Doug Otlab

(26:04):
show here on Fox Sports Trader, do you want to
ask you quickly about about the Giants? Um, we we've
we've gone and you know with those no real games,
this is what we do. But we've gone from Daniel
Jones is booted the Yankees game. Nobody wants him to. Hey,
why don't we get to get this Daniel Jones guy
in as he's throwing The boy did fumbled twice in

(26:25):
the second preseason game, but has thrown the ball exceedingly
well and looked like a guy who could ultimately be
the starting quarterback. Um, the Giants are just they're dug
in on Eli. Does it have to be a patent
type of situation where he just can't play anymore? Or
do you actually think Daniel Jones will will get some
some legit run this year. Well, I haven't seen him
in person yet, and we get them week four for

(26:47):
the preseason, which if he's playing and that one, I
think we'll understand a little bit where he stands. But
if he's not, I mean, it kind of sends the
opposite message. That's someone to protecting that may be involved
at some point this season. But I was put it
this way, I'm not necessary early team, you know, d
Aaron Rodgers way. It doesn't have to be you know,
four years into your career in this long tutelage kind
of thing because with the spread offense stuff and in offenses,

(27:09):
willing to simplify themselves and make them were college college
system nomenclature friendly, that kind of thing. A guy can
come in and get it quickly if he's seasoned enough,
if he's able enough. Um. So you know, it's not
as if let's put it this way, we know how
the NFL goes you you're one in three in September,
that conversation will restart if it hadn't already. If the
four now in September, this can go away for a

(27:29):
year or even two. And that's unfortunately just kind of
how things work. Momentum will generally, you know, tell the
story here, especially in the absence of their top wide
receivers down with a p D thing. So, uh, which
whichever was that that he got him out, But you
don't have you don't have weapons, and you have the
other quarterback who they're sort of you know, nudging from behind. Um.
It always ends up being outside factors and make that decision.

(27:51):
If Daniel's ready may not matter U. If Daniel is
not may not matter. So we'll see where it goes. Matt,
great stuff, man, enjoy your work. Really pre shate you
joining us and thanks for me our guest on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, thanks for having Matt Chadam joining US.
Three time Super Bowl champion and now he can read
his work in the athletic but you can check him
out on those preseason Patriots broadcasts. Be sure to catch

(28:15):
live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show week days
at noon Eastern three pm Pacific. Interesting times in Los
Angeles as the Lakers are kind of searching for another
center and one of the names who has been brought
up is a former center for the l A Lakers,
and that is Dwight Howard. And while many are freaked
out about it, like how could you possibly bring in

(28:37):
Dwight Howard, you have to be reasonable and say, well,
who else is out there? Right? Like you got Cody Zeller?
Maybe maybe marcinour tot okay, or you have joke him Noah,
like these are legitimately the options that they have, or

(29:00):
you got Dwight Howard. So does do you know music?
Do you even know what team Dwight Howard currently belongs to?
You know? Reading this story, I found out. But when
I when I read the name of the team, I
was actually shocked because I had no idea. Isn't it
the Grizzlies. It is, Yeah, I thought for sure, because

(29:23):
he bounced around to a lot of places, and I
thought it was the Wizards the last I remembered. Yes,
that's who he actually played for last year. But I
have no idea he played nine games last season. I
have no idea how he ended up on the Grizzlies.
Did he sign as a free agent? Did they he was?
He was traded O it was a two year deal
or so, I think I think he was. I believe

(29:43):
he was traded. They owned his rights. He was in
Charlotte for a year. And again, statistically, you know, sixteen
points a game, UM, twelve and a half rebounds a
game in only thirty minutes. Like, statistically, that's great. Last
year he only played nine games for the Wizards, but
he averaged thirteen a game. You know, at thirteen and

(30:04):
nine rebounds. This is one of those guys that stats
belie everything you know. Stats would tell you that he's
still a dominant player. It also, by the way, speaks
to how I'd have a hard time with him in
the Hall of Fame even though he's been statistically Dominantes
led the league in rebounding, led the league in block shots.

(30:26):
There was a time. Remember if you go back to
two thousand and two thousand nine, he haveveraged twenty points
a game, fourteen boards a game, three blocks a game,
and a S one Steeler game like that, the crazy,
crazy numbers. And think about what his numbers would have
been had you been able to make more free throws
below six free throw shooter. But his back was an

(30:47):
issue last year. Supposedly he's lost twenty five pounds, you know,
doing the old I'm in the best shape of my life.
He's thirty three years old. And like, I get it.
If you're the Lakers, you sit there and convince yourself
this is a minimum contract. We just need him for
fifteen twenty minutes a night. But I don't know how

(31:08):
you can count on Dwight Howard for that. I just don't.
And then you don't want to spoil the apple cart.
Now he won't be in a position of power in
that locker room. So maybe that's why they don't care.
But dude, from Houston to Atlanta to Charlotte to Washington
back to l A man one, two, three, four, five six.

(31:29):
He's played for six NBA teams stright six and of
course he belongs to the Wizards, but has never played
a game for them. What A, what A? What a crazy?
Full circuit should be pointed out. There's basically no one
in the front office in the locker room for the
Lakers that was with the Lakers the last time he
was around, with the exception maybe of Rob Polinka, who

(31:53):
at that time was the agent representing Kobe Bryant, who
just didn't respect the work at the of Dwight Howard
the way in which he purported himself. So I think
when you hear interest is mutual, you know, that's like
two people walking past each other in a bar and
being attracted to each other. That doesn't mean they're gonna

(32:14):
hook up, doesn't doesn't mean that. It just means that
that the Lakers need a center. And you know, in
terms of uh, in terms of will they actually make
that move, I would guess the answer is no. On
the other hand, I don't you know. They they did
the Misfit Toys single last year. They brought back Rondo,

(32:35):
which was surprising. Levan Bell won't play at all in
the preseason. Big deal, a little deal or no deal.

are playing big deal, Little deal, no deal? Alrighty, and
we are going to start a big deal, little deal
or no deal with a Jets head coach Adam Gaze

(33:38):
who blames himself for linebacker Avery Williamson tearing his a
c L in their preseason game against the Falcons. Big deal,
little deal or no deal. It's just a little deal,
you know, it's a little deal. They clearly have bad
luck um in that you know, a backup linebacker ran
into their starting linebacker tore his A towre his a

(33:58):
c L and um, you know Adam Gaze saying I
blame myself. He doesn't really blame himself. It's not really
his fault. He didn't really run into the leg of
his star linebacker. So it's more of a little deal
than a big deal. It wasn't like he said, hey,
go stand out on that freeway and don't come off
the freeway until all the cars are gone, right. Yeah,
It's it's rare for a coach to publicly express remorse

(34:21):
about it. Obviously he's remorseful about the player being injured.
Um but um but yeah, he says he regrets leaving
the linebacker in as long as he did Number two.
Big deal, a little deal or no deal. Gaze has
also announced Levian Bell won't play at all during the
preseason and we'll make his debut when the Jets UH

(34:41):
take on their week one of home and the regular season.
That feels like a big deal. Now I understand that
that this is basically what the Rams do. This is
the trend now in the National Football League is and
they do have UH lady on. Bell has seen some
contact work in their dual practices and in his own

(35:01):
and their own practices. He has gotten hit before, like
it's not like he but there's just a difference in
game speed, and when you haven't played in a year
and a half, that feels like a massive, massive jump um.
And I remember, like Levian plays kind of unique style
in the NFL, so the line has to learn to
play with him. I think it's a mistake. I do.

(35:23):
But they open up with two at home Bills and Browns,
two non playoff teams, but two teams that that have
very competitive defenses. So we'll see. I think it's a
mistake to not not play him in the preseason. Well,
it seems like with Gaze expressing the remorse over Avery
Williamson's injury, he just doesn't want to see the same
thing happen. And by the way, Levian bell tongue in
cheek tweeting I'll see y'all in September. So big deal,

(35:48):
a little deal or no deal, Doug, The Browns and
the Bears are receiving the most public bets to win
the Super Bowl. It feels like a big deal. The Bears.
The Bears, they were good last year, but remember they're
good because you know, Minnesota was so bad and big games,
and because the Green Bay Packers are so injured and
so dysfunctional. Maybe they're good because they're good and their

(36:09):
defense is awesome, and you know, Tarik Cohen, But I
just and they The parallel is the Rams the year
before lost at home in the playoffs after having a
great regular season, and they went on to a Superowl
nearly one. The thing, I just I don't see it
with Mitch Robinsky, I just don't And the Browns that
feels like too big a jump. But um, two talented teams,

(36:31):
two talented teams that are expected to compete for playoffs pots. Well,
the senior odds maker at Susers says, every time the
Bears go to the playoffs the following year, money just
pours in. Everybody gets optimistic, and he also does express
the the two sweetheart quarterbacks. Betters love Mitchell Trabinsky for
some reason. And by the way, the Bears are nine
to one. There let's see fourth best odds behind the

(36:54):
Patriots and Chiefs. Baker Mayfield, also obviously a fan favorite.
Browns are ten to one to win the Super Bowl.
Big deal, little deal, or no deal. Seahawks receiver DK
Metcalf will have knee surgery. The team's holding out hope
though he can return by the start of the regular season. Uh,
that's does not feel like that big a deal. He

(37:18):
is a big target and he has he's just like
kind of a little bit over talked about, overhyped, but
unfortunately a minor knee procedure at this point the year
probably puts him on the shelf until the first couple
of weeks of the season. It feels like a little deal,
but but a disappointing deal considering they thought they got
a steal in the draft, right and finally big deal,
little deal or no deal. Players and owners in the

(37:40):
NFL are exploring the idea of expanding the playoffs from
twelve to fourteen teams. That's a that's a big deal.
That's gonna probably likely gonna happen. It's a it's a
meeting point between adding more games and standing pat and
he creates creates revenue, creates TV revenue. That's what it's about.
That's game time. Is game time on the Dug Gotlip

(38:03):
Show Alright, coming up next in the Doug Gottlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. It's a mess, and there's
a reason it's a mess. His name's Antonio Brown. We
discussed next. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug got Leap Show weekdays at noon eastern three pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio

(38:23):
app Boom. What Up, America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Coming to you from beautiful sunny southern California. I'm brought
to you by Farmers and Farmers. We've seen almost everything,
so we know how to cover almost anything. When it's
game time, have an experienced player help you stay at
the game, put their experience in a play at farmers
dot com. We are farmers, so um Antonio Brown appears

(38:49):
to be that guy, that guy, or maybe that woman.
I don't know woman, that guy, that woman. They kind
of take you through what's taken places. Antonio Brown was
reportedly back at the Raiders facility earlier today, but um

(39:11):
Um Antonio Brown, who had fought the league over their
new helmet rule, did show up in Arizona at the
preseason game. Was supposedly all in on being back after
losing arbitration. The helmets that he found or was given
or bought because you know you use social media, Hey,

(39:32):
I need a I need one that's less than ten
years old. Were deemed to still be too dangerous, and
so he had to go with a newer model. Then
he knows shows again. Yesterday. Here's Mike Mayock, general manager
of the Oakland Raiders, yesterday. Here's the bottom line. He's

(39:52):
upset about the helmet issue. We have supported that. We
appreciate that, okay, but we've at this point, we've pretty
much exhausted all avenues of relief. So from our perspective,
it's time for him to be all in. We're all out,
So we're hoping he's back soon. We got eighty nine

(40:13):
guys busting their tails. We are really excited about where
this franchise is going, and we hope Abe is gonna
be a big part of it, starting Week one against Denver.
End of story. No questions, no questions, like, look, dude,
we're done. We're done. We've done all this other stuff.

(40:34):
We're done. We're just done. And and I understand, talented
people oftentimes are difficult people, and how much you'll put
up with oftentimes comes down to how much that a
person produces. But Mike Mayocks sitting there, he's just gotta
be This is exhausting. I'm trying to put together the best,

(40:56):
the best roster, the best fifty three guys for the
Oakland Raiders. This is the job of his life. That's
what this is for Mike Mayak, a guy who has
been a TV guy for twenty years, who used call
Notre Dame games and nb and and the NFL Networks
Thursday Night game and it was this is the job
of his life. And you can't proper evaluate what you
have unless you have all the pieces. And it's one

(41:19):
thing if you're missing for a legit excuse like look,
your mom dies, your dad dies, your grandma, you know,
you're you're even even the feet the foot thing, it's annoying,
but like, look you look at his feet, Like all right,
he's clearly not healthy. You can't argue with those things,
would have zero argument with them. Ever, cannot argue with him.

(41:41):
But you start going down this kind of rabbit hole
of you know, of just complete nonsense. What do you
want us to do? But what do you want us
to believe? And Mike mayakas in there going like, look,
will you hear you the helmet thing? You're mad they
had a ruling. It's over it's over. Drew Rosenhouse Uh

(42:07):
Antonio Brown's agent was on the Herd earlier today. Here's
what he had to say. We've worked very closely with
the Raiders, and we will continue to work very closely
with the Raiders. I'm not sure that we agree that
we've exhausted all the options, is Mike Mayock said, But
there's no doubt. It's still an ongoing process. We are

(42:29):
trying to work with the team and the league and
the union to come up with the solution. We haven't
figured out yet. To say that A b Is upset
about the decision to not let him wear his helmet
is accurate, but we're still processing it and figuring it out.
I wouldn't make too much about him not being there
today as much as we're still trying to come up

(42:50):
with a solution that works for everyone. That was actually
earlier in the day before he was on the herd,
and when he was on the herd, he said, we're
coming close to alution here. The resolution is simple, put
on a new helmet, get used to it, and go
out and play football. You know, you you can't have
on one hit. You're like, you don't have the support
really of the union on this, because the union has

(43:10):
been vociferous in Hey, the league's not trying to protect us.
There's lawsuits against him helmet companies. Now did the league
paid to almost two billion dollars out due to the
concussion lawsuits, the CTE lawsuits. You're you're asking something that's impossible.
You want the league to review it. We did where
the new helmet. You want arbitrator to review it. We

(43:33):
did wear the new helmet. You're just wearing everybody down.
And it's one thing if you've been with the franchise
for ten years and this is the only helmet you've worn,
and you've been a good citizen and you've done all
these things, it's a whole other thing. If you just
got to a place they gave you a contract. They
probably they don't, they don't. Probably they definitely didn't have
to give you. And you burn your feet. You know,

(43:57):
you have a reputation, and now you won't wear the
damn helmet, So you're missing time. And I mean, even
if you have wore the new helmet and we're unhappy
about it and threatened to sit the first game so
this could go forward, that's more acceptable than not showing up.
So I just this idea that this is and I

(44:20):
do blame Rosenhouse, and people will say, well, you know,
he's got so many clients and and Rosenhouse does a
good job for yeah, but he never manages issues like this.
This is a pr disaster for Antonio Brown. There isn't
anyone out there going, you know, and honestly, he's getting
screwed in this. And we're we're in a space where

(44:43):
everyone's against leagues, everyone's against ownership and coaches. They're up
and not nice. Good luck finding somebody who can make
a legit argument for Antonio Brown to be able to
wear the helmet that he wants to be awared a
ten year old bonnet which has been deemed to be
illegal be because it doesn't pass the concussion testing. How

(45:04):
does anybody, how does Antonio Brown in his right mind
think this is going to have any sort of public support,
doesn't have legal support, doesn't have public support, doesn't have
any support. Get back on the football field, get back
out there, and he's you know, he's working his way

(45:24):
towards the ten who's at the bar. You know, she
looks good, she smells good. Why isn't she married. It's
a hard thing, you know, and maybe he's just misunderstood
and maybe nobody listened to him, or maybe maybe we
listened to him too much. You know, this is look

(45:46):
Terrell Owens is essentially be what was this? What this became? Now?
I think Terrell, you know, later in his career, had
a ton of drops, a ton he had a lot
of drops, especially with the Cowboys, but he towards a
c l he came back. He's always told people, look,
I'm still in shape, I can still do all these things.
Like yeah, but you know what, you're just to pay
in the ass and your talent is not the level

(46:07):
of Antonio Browns anymore. So we don't want to put
up with you. And that's ultimately what's gonna happen to
Antonio brown after this thing. You know, you keep your job,
you lose your career. But man, I mean they're they're
earlier today, earlier today, the Raiders were discussing the nuclear option,
which is you have to you have to put a

(46:28):
letter in writing if he misses five straight days that
he basically we're starting the process of avoiding your contract
and asking for all that signing money, uh money back
there is a nuclear option in every one of these contracts.
No one's ever pulled the record. NFL teams don't have
the lower intestine afforded to to do it, but eventually

(46:49):
somebody will when they get pushed. And we've gotten to
that area, because I mean, my goodness, my goodness, all right,
this is just bad. There's nothing good about it. It's
a complete non situation. Half of America is scared to
put their kids. Like my son says his first tackle

(47:10):
football practice, if you want a brand new Ridel Ridel helmet.
But I mean, like, look, it's it's with trepidation that
I sent him out there. Have America is scared to
let their kids play football, and the biggest reason is
your helmet is your head. It reminds me that ever

(47:31):
you guy's ever heard that Seinfeld line. He does his
thing on helmets and skydiving, right like at some point
the helmets wearing you a good couple of helmet sky
heavy helmets, like and I would have been a goner
if not for that guy I was wearing. But Jerry
Seinfeld has alliance. Is you know that the helmet law
is enacted to protect a brain that's performing. So poorly.

(47:54):
It doesn't know it needs to be protected. It's perfect.
That's exactly what's happening here. And the idea that Drew Rosenhous,
his agent isn't in his ear telling him, dude, get
back in camp. You've got a big contract. You have
no sweat equity to these people. You want to prove
to the world you're worth. Where are the crummy helmet?
And I'll try and get your helmet approved by first game.

(48:17):
In the meantime, all you're doing is creating the basic
distraction that everybody wants to stay away from. And that's
really hard to back down from, really really hard. All right, Uh,
coming up tomorrow, tom coming tomorrow, coming up next on
the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. We've

(48:40):
got a bunch of stuff to get to. Man, I'm excided.
You know, it's game week college football games. We had
Kevin someone on, I think it was last week, Kevin
Sumlin on last week. They get ready to take on Hawaii.
Of course, we're waiting to see Clemson. Will Blackman, of
course played at Clemson's Super Bowl champion NFL analyst. We're
gonna ask him about the Antonio Brown situation. Is there

(49:03):
is there any support at all from players because there's
all these veteran players. Everybody else has switched their helmets. Please,
somebody explained to me why this is even a thing.
Be sure to catch live editions so the Doug gott
Leap Show week days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific,
Doug gott Leap Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Just
trying to figure out this Antonio Brown thing, right like

(49:24):
you just don't get it, No, don't get it. Will
Blackman play in the NFL? He's down? Analysts fall them
on Twitter and Instagram at Will Blackman uh and check
out to NFL wine guy dot com for his wines
of the month. Oh that's perfect, It's perfect. Will are
you read? Or white guy? By the way, listen, you
seem so reluctant to mentioned my wild like, oh here

(49:47):
we go another athlete drinking wine. Come on, Doug, well
you read? Or white guy? I'm like all the above,
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not subjective. You're a buttery
shard guys, which you are? I feel I feel like
you're I'm not. I'm more shabis which and steal no oak?
All right? Fair, fair, fair, enough. Um. I mentioned no.
I mentioned wine because Antonio Brown whining about the helmet, like,

(50:10):
are you, like, do you play in the league for
a long time? Help me help me out. Is there
is there any sort of groundswell of support from real
and NFL guys. There is there is support because it's
God's are superstitious, you know, and it's people are like
really in particular, Like for me my whole career, I

(50:30):
wore one face mask. I had to have that one
face mask. And it's funny because on a different scale,
when in college, when I UM, when I signed my
letter intent before I went to Boston College, they sent
they sent you a uniform sheet and they said put
your sizes, put your helmet type, and everything else you
want to add. So I knew the helmet that I wanted,

(50:52):
and I actually do the face mask code like I
was that detailed Doug. I was psycho. And when I
arrived on campus, I looked at my lock and I
had a ride out revolution helmet, which wasn't even close
to what I wanted. And I actually had a little
riff with the equipment manager and I refused to go
to practice because this is not the helmet that I wanted,

(51:14):
and I fought it for a while, and he was like,
the whole freshman class, they have to wear it. So
they made us wear this helmet, so it was not
a different scale. And what's funny is when I graduated,
when they graduated, they went back to the old helmet.
I'm gonna look, I I get it. I mean, you know,
baseball guys have their mit and have their bat and
have their way. They want to do things. Hoop guys.
It's a lot of times their shoes sometimes the length

(51:35):
to their shorts, you know, or you know, the how
how how how tight the jersey is or your number.
But like we've been through arbitration, it didn't work like
get back, you know. And and it's not like he's
in a place where he has a ton of sweat equity.
He's a great player, but he hasn't practiced enough to
being to being to swinging his his you know what

(51:55):
around like this. If you know what, though, I think
it's just I don't think there's that much of a
big deal. I think it'll be solved. He'll be ready
week one. I don't I don't look at it as
like it's just because it's it's him and all the antics,
especially what happened last year and everything. I think it's
just because it's him. I can't imagine. I can't imagine

(52:18):
if there's a situation where, you know, Eli was real
in particular by his helmet and he really really wanted
his helmet and fought it that it would be blown
over like this, I don't think it's I think it's fine.
I just think everyone is already annoyed with a B
and just the fact that he especially after his interview
with Jeff Arlington about you know, they got played by

(52:38):
my rules. That kind of russ a lot of people
the wrong way, and I understand that, but um, you know,
he made he made his money in that old school
shut helmet and he wants to continue using it and
obviously probably not gonna be able to use it, and
it'll be fine. I'm not ready. What's it gonna be
like for Josh Gordon? And he's had so many times
in his career where he hasn't played football and he's

(53:01):
pretty good. Last year he was he great, no, and
then of course he went away and they still want
a Super Bowl without him. How effective do you think
he'll be? I think I think he did do very
very well. I mean eighteen yards of catch, um, you know,
forty forty catches for about seven thirty yards was I
mean in twelve games is really really good. I actually

(53:21):
lined up against Josh and I always tell people Josh
Gordon is probably top two, top three of the UH
best receiver I have a lineup across. I mean, there's
nothing he can't do. I always made a comparison. I said,
if you take Ben Wallace and US Saint Boat and
you put him together, and you put him on the
field with good hands, you get Josh Gordon, and I

(53:41):
think he's gonna be well. The one thing I do
UM appreciate that we should do more in the NFL,
especially when it's something like substance abuse or that kind
of issue, that we continue to take care of our own.
And I respect the fact that the Patriots have stayed
with him to help him with that because it's a

(54:02):
you know, it's a it's a disease, it's an issue,
a situation. I was in Jacksonville with the whole Justin
Blackman deal, and Justin is a he's a he's a
good dude man. You know, he's a really good person.
I got to spend time with him and hang out
with him, but just had like these demons that he
kept fighting, you know, And I don't believe that. Okay,
a guy keeps getting in trouble with dealing with that

(54:23):
stuff substance why substance abuse, and we just just continue
to throw him out the league. I think we shoul
continue to take care of own and that's why they
runt M back, you know. And I think he's gonna
have a phenomena year. And I believe this is you know,
this would be the end of him dealing with all
that stuff. How how much will Levan or will Avian struggle.

(54:44):
He's not going to play a preseason game. He has
been through some contact stuff in practice, but he hadn't
played a game in a year and a half. You know, Um,
how hard is that going to be because game speed
is so much more violent? How hard is that gonna
be for his adjustment with the Jets? For him? For him,
I think that there is a positive of him missing
last year is that he is now fully healthy. He

(55:06):
didn't get anywhere and count his body and he's played
at such a high level for so long that he's gonna.
I believe he's gonna It might take him a couple
of games to pick up or he left up, but
he's he's just that good where it's not gonna be
a big deal where he missed a year off and
he's gonna be rusty. Uh. You know, they had enough
time this off season to play football football practices now,

(55:27):
like like we don't do conditioning in the NFL during
from during practice. Our practice is conditioning in itself, and
you know, going against other guys, I know he's not
getting tackled, but I mean he's gonna pick back right
where he left off in the off seas he's done
songs of training. Yes, I understand, you know, you can't.
You can't simulate games on the off season when you're training.
But I think he'll take a couple of games, but

(55:48):
he'll he'll be just fine and be very, very productive
and it's gonna definitely elevate Sam Donald's play. I don't
think there's any doubt that once he gets going, he'll
elevate Sam Donald. And we'll see probably more out of
the out of the second year quarterback out of USC
Will Black been joining us on the Doug Gotlip show
on Fox Sports Radio. It's funny we went from Daniel

(56:09):
Jones everyone booze him in a Yankee game to Daniel
Jones two preseason games in When can we get rid
of this? Eli guy? Dave Gentleman is like, we're not
playing the rookie. The kad coach pat, yourmon, we're not
playing the rookie. The owner comes out ands like, we
think a good season if the rookie never plays. I mean,
they're all saying the same thing. But will they actually

(56:30):
follow through with it and red shirt Daniel Jones. I
believe they will. I believe they would do that. Um.
I actually I understood the pick. I wasn't so I wasn't.
More like everyone else, why are you gonna be again?
No one knows about him, but they did all their homework.
He's cut from he's cut from that cloth. He's cut
from the cup lift cloth, you know, and and why not?

(56:51):
You know, I don't think he'll play. I'm pretty sure,
Dave Gentleman, he's very stern and decisions he has made,
you know, he you know, didn't resign Josh Gordon, he
I mean Josh Norman, excuse me, and he traded away Odell.
You know, he didn't resign Collins, so he's very stern
on what he's trying to do. So I believe he

(57:12):
will not um play the damn Plus he you know,
he had his loyalty to ELI when he was there before.
And I look at his situation, is that ELI is
gonna continue to play, just like when I was in
Green Bay with five and Aaron Rodgers. Think you have
a guy who's, based on what he has been doing
early is the future is bright. And you have a
the quarterback who has you know, done a lot for

(57:34):
the franchise. So I don't think I don't think there
is any rush. Now. The pressure is on ELI for
him to perform well this year because you know, stay
there in a situation where they dropping games and he's
not doing well, then they're gonna have meetings and like, hey,
you know, this is what we're gonna do from a

(57:57):
no decision be made from a a wealth situation, a process,
not like before when he got bench, which I thought
was insane, absolutely insane. Why was it insane? I mean
I thought that the owner was on board, the coaches
on board, the genlem managers on board. The only one
who wasn't on board. Was he was Eli, And they
didn't want to bench him. They wanted to they wanted

(58:17):
to bring some guys off the bench to play Layton
games to get them up and going, why do you
think it was insane? We'll bring him off the bench,
then don't bench Eli and stuff. But no, he said,
he said no, no, no no, no, he said, hey, no,
don't bring come off the bench. If you want to
sit me, sit me, I'll sit And they did, and
everybody lost her mind. Well, I still don't believe that
he should have not started, mostly because mostly how much

(58:41):
of it because it was Gino? Say it again, how
much of that is because it was Gino right like
Geno Smith in New York just did not No one
thought that was ultimately going to be the answer. So
they didn't understand why that was the answer. Yeah, and
that's I'm saying, like I get, I get you want
to get some looks at other guys, But if you
for sure do not know like this is our future.

(59:04):
You just hear giving other guys who have to see
what they can do, is like you could have done that.
You do it when take them off the bench. Now
like this year it does seem to. Now they have
their quarterback who they went and got in the first round.
If you want to bench, you like because you have
your go you have your guy for the future. You
don't get a quarterback in the first round if you
thought your future guy. And I understand that they did
it this year, but they didn't have that with where

(59:24):
they didn't have it with you know, you know what
I'm saying. Yeah, the Bears were twelve and four last year,
lost in the home playoff game, and now they're like,
they're they're getting the most money bet on them to
get to a Super Bowl, get to and win a
Super Bowl. Um, I'm just not a Trabiskie guy at
that level. Where are you in the Bears? I love

(59:46):
the Bears as an entire team. Um, that's why I
put my money on them, just as a team. Can
there be a situation where if a team is struggling
and can Trabinsky take the old and help that team
gets winning to be I think the jury is still out.
I think he's a phenomenal talent. I think he's you know,

(01:00:09):
it's very he's very good in terms of being a mobile.
He has tons of weapons. They kind of went with
the the golf and Carson Wentz plan that here or two.
They went and got him a boatload of weapons to
make it easy for him. You know, when you have
a rookie quarterbacks down his rookie deal, that's what you do.
And they went and built that defense around him. So
I think as a team they will do well. But

(01:00:30):
the jury still out is can he be that guy
to propel them forward? Similar to last year with the
the Rams. You know, they went and very very similar
as I just mentioned, but when it became crunch time,
I'm I can I'm sure the Patriots watched the film
Versus the Bears and they got after golf, and so
if you put pressure on golf, then clearly you know

(01:00:50):
he struggled. So a lot of people still feel like
the journey's all on golf as well. Well. Will black
Been joined us in the Dug Outlet Show on five
Sports Radio. I'm gonna play for you something that Jerry
Jones said after their preseason game. Right, Um, they had
a young running back who they drafted in the fourth round.

(01:01:11):
Have a good day, right, I mean that what happens
he has it, he has a really really nice day,
and so one of the local reporters says, uh oh, hey,
uh Tony Pollard right, like he's your your greatest negotiating tool.
Take a listen, what's your best negotiating with zo? Now,

(01:01:33):
Supposedly Zeke and his agent were both, um a little
bit offended by it. I mean, am I wrong? Are
they being a little too sensitive? Um? I think that
if they're offended by it, then clearly both parties are
not on the same page. You know, for him to

(01:01:55):
be joking around like that. UM, I would be offended
by it if I was agent, just because we're trying
to we're trying to come to a common ground and
and it's a it's a joke right now, you know
what I'm saying. So, UM, I get Tony Pollard had
a you know, a pretty good game, and everyone's excited.

(01:02:15):
But it's it's it's not even it's not even close.
It's not even the same. They're offering Zeke big money.
It's not like they're low, but you know, they're they're
in the negotiation music and they've said all the things.
It's clearly a joke. It's like, I just feel like
we're we're in this, Like the agent and Zeke falling
into the old social media trap of like finding something
to be offended by when there's nothing to be offended

(01:02:37):
by there. If they want to be I get if
they are offended, but you have to go out there
and and let people know that you're annoyed. That's kind
of over bloom. I think it's kind of od. Yeah, yeah, yes,
from from from from their their perspective. Um, you mentioned
the Packers that the one of the teams you played for,
Aaron Rodgers back out at practice. He's had some back issues.

(01:02:58):
What are your expectation We haven't seen him in live
action with this offense. The defense feels like it's been
totally revamped. Um, some of the some of the youth
on offense seems better. What are your expectations for the
pack Man That is to be determined. UM. I actually
I'm excited for how the running back Aaron's don't finished

(01:03:18):
last year. I think he's gonna be a huge part
of what they're trying to do. My dark horse is
Equanimius st. Brown. That's hard receiver. No one really talks
about him right now, but I think that he has
he has some some ability that can help him. But
this year. I expect the Packers to be competitive as
long as you guys, you know, it's a quarterback league

(01:03:39):
and if you have an Rockets back here, he gives
you a chance no matter what. So right now though
it's it's it's to be determined, and it's gonna definitely
gonna be important to see how that defense done. You know,
the years that the Packers have done very well and
even though they want a super Bowl, you know, and
Rodgers had a top five defense, uh and that's helped
them tremendously. So that's it's really gonna be huge for that.

(01:04:02):
Um and not to mention too, he did have weapons
across the board in terms of his receiver in Corps two,
So regardless of how good his talent is, you still
need help around you. And uh yeah, and plus it
also I want to mention to in terms of like
everyone's talking about the relationship with Baffleur the same thing
that I think that's just overblown. You just got to

(01:04:23):
two guys. And especially if someone Aaron Rodgers with a
strong mind that has an opinion, you're going to speak
is ervinging. So he deserves to have an opinion to
say what he wants to say, and I think they're
gonna be fine and come to a common ground, and
I'm sure they already are right now and that they
would be just fine. It's it's interesting because playing for
twelve years being inside all these locker rooms, things aren't

(01:04:47):
as big big deal as people seem make it to be,
because like once, once you hear about it to the
media and it stuff spreading like will fire, It's like, dude,
it's not. It's not that serious. There's probably one incident
where I've been around where it was actually a big deal,
and that was the whole far in Roger's situation. That
was a big deal because probably don't want to leave

(01:05:07):
and greet. It was like, dude, we're trying to get
Aaron Rodgers out there, so making me that mine that
was Did you guys know how good Aaron Rodgers was?
See it again, did you guys know how good Aaron
Rodgers was? Yeah? It was crazy. Here's the funny thing
I always tell the story is, think about this in
practice versus the ones was far versus the twos was
Aaron Rodgers. So a lot of times we were going

(01:05:29):
into games where your starting quarterback was not even better
in our backup. We knew that, you know, and it
was it was fun. But yeah, most most stuff is
just like when we talked about earlier, the helmet thing.
I get it. It's once enough to gets public and
it seems like, oh, it's bad for this, it's bad
for the team. Is okay? You know it's gonna get solved.
You gotta answer questions they got. Mike Mack had it.

(01:05:51):
He had to answer the question. He's not going to
just run and not say anything. He answered the question
will black men play in the NFL? He's an analyst.
Check him on Instagram out will black maybe more important
to check out? Wednesday will be co hosted the Dan
Patrick Show alongside my pal Jason Smith. Will get some rest.

I saw this Ryan Music actually sent it to me.
Is this a real story? Ryan? About? Yeah? I believe
so so. On Twitter it's making the rounds and I

(01:06:33):
guess you can say it's I don't know if it's
technically trending, but it's going viral, as the kids say
these days. So the Energy Star federal program from the
d OE UM reports apparently that you're supposed to keep
your house at seventy eight degrees. That that's what's recommended,
seventy eight degrees when you're home, five if you're at

(01:06:57):
work or away. And then this is the one that's
just absolutely mind boggling eighty two overnight while you sleep.
No chance, no chance that's happening whatsoever. By the way,
where are you living where If you set your thermostat
at eight two at that point, why didn't you just

(01:07:17):
turn it off and open up all the windows. Because
there's very few places where it's going to be hotter
than eighty two degrees out in the middle of the
night at any point in the year, let alone, I
mean in the middle of the summer. I guess very
remote parts of the desert or parts of the South,
perhaps due to the humidity. Well, what where's this? Where's

(01:07:40):
the station that did this report? Is that which I
believe it's in Florida, Florida? Yeah, good luck with that, Yeah,
good yeah, good luck with that? Right? Like you're gonna
get people in Florida to sleep in their house at
eighty two degrees. I want to see my breath when
I go to sleep. You're you're you like that cold? Yes?

(01:08:00):
Is it a struggle with the with your wife? No?
I mean honestly, we've been married nineteen years and I've
I only touched the thermostat when told to do. So, okay, right,
Like that's this is this is a kind of a
little marriage one oh one thing for you. Like you
can fight over the thermostat if you'd like, You're not
gonna win this. So I made it up in my

(01:08:23):
mind that, like, there are certain battles that I will fight,
that's not one of them. Now she likes it on
the cooler side. She does like in a cooler side.
She runs the air a little bit too much. Um,
but you do have air conditioning, because I was gonna
be my next question for you, because you live in
an area where that's not necessarily something that absolutely needs
to happen. Correct, there's only about two weeks out of

(01:08:45):
the year, maybe three where you need it. But uh, yeah,
we have a C and we run the A C
way more than we probably should. But you know, like, look,
I like my I like I like to sleep in
an ice box. I like to if you have really
good sheets, I'd like to use them and climb under
him and and be super comfort bowl. So yes, I
like it cold, but in for And that's why when
I get to a hotel room, I crank that sucker

(01:09:06):
down and I do not have the same I'm not
gonna sit here and stick out my chest neck like
I have control over thermostad at home. Now, you've lived
many places, but you did spend a good amount of
time on the East Coast. Now, I've really only lived
in the southern different parts of the southern California area.
When you're on the East coast? Is it the same

(01:09:26):
way at night in the wintertime? So when you're dealing
with a brutal winter, do you still like it cold
that night? Yes? Interesting, Yes, I didn't like I never
I we I didn't like turning on the heater. You know. Look,
I mean, the better the house you live in, the
better it's installated anyway, But I didn't like a heater. Um,

(01:09:47):
you know, you just get you you turn it on
maybe during the day so it's not freezing cold, but
that yeah, I'd like it, like it was sixty five
at night on a cold chrisp night outside, Like that's amazing,
getting your into your sheets and you're like, oh, this
is great, this is fantastic. So that's how I That's
how I roll. How about you? You you like it?

(01:10:08):
One of that and now I like you, I like it.
But you're also staying at somebody else's house. So do
you have correct me? You have no zero input whatsoever.
I just deal with whatever it is. The the one
battle that I finally have overcome was my fiance was
very anti ceiling fan. She was a very ceiling fan.

(01:10:29):
Is a great love. I love the ceiling fan. We
went a very long time where she was anti ceiling
fan because she said it dried out her lips. So
when she would wake up, she's like, I always get
chopped lips. No ceiling fan. And so I finally was like, look,
we gotta do the ceiling fan and or some like
get some like sleeping lip gloss or something to say

(01:10:50):
you're thinking about her or whatever, and then you get
your ceiling fans. A ceiling fans, amazing ceiling fans an underrated.
You know, the ability to sleep with fans going to
That's like one of those once you give, once you
get that, it's provides a little bit of noise usually
as well as a blocker to the rest of the noise.
That's that's not bad. Yeah, this this report is I
think complete hogwash. Are we in the not the age

(01:11:59):
This was Colin cow Her earlier today talking about Jimmy
Garoppolo Jimmy G playing a night against the Broncos for
the first time since tearing his A c L last season.
There is this narrative out there that, oh my gosh,
what if it doesn't work? San Francisco is a great
example of spot a quarterback you like, pay him early,

(01:12:22):
because even if Jimmy G got hurt in week twelve,
let's say get hurt again. By the way I'm showing
your video, he's got a brace. You do realize now, right,
they can get rid of him and they only have
a four million dollar dead money cap hit next year
because they spotted him early and they paid him. This
is the opposite of the Cowboys who waited, waited and

(01:12:44):
waited and waited. Part of being an NFL GM is
spotting talent and saying, okay, let's at the quarterback position.
At least, let's get him paid. Yeah, but I mean
they had him for you know, ten games. He's played
ten games in his entire career, so if he can't
stay healthy, it becomes a problem. The five games they

(01:13:08):
had him for the previous season, he looked great, and
I was all on Jimmy G and Jimmy jesus um,
but he's one doesn't need to show us how tough
he Isn't staying in bounds, and two he's got to
stay healthy. In three then he's got to be productive.
But the idea that they spotted they not only spotted talent.
They if you remember, they didn't trade much for him,

(01:13:28):
but it was like a rental where they got to
see how he practiced, how he interacted with people, how
he worked in their offense, and ultimately how he competed,
even though there was no necessarily plans to put him
in there to compete, and he exceeded anybody's expectations. So
they took Jimmy Garoppolo for a test drive. But the
second they bought the car, Garoppolo being the car long
term deal, and all of a sudden they had a

(01:13:50):
massive breakdown. They basically drove it off the lot. And
then you know, early on before there's fifteen thousand miles,
it needed a new carburetor, like what in the heck?
And now you got a new carburetor, and now there's
better rims and there's a better stereo, and you know,
everything out of work it and everything's better. But unless
the carburetor holes, unless the car doesn't break down, you
don't want to have one of these lemons. I mean,

(01:14:13):
that's that's kind of what we've talked about here with
so much with uh with Andrew luck, right, and some
of these other quarterbacks where I think Andrew Luks terrific.
Everybody thinks Andrew looks terrific, but at some point you
start becoming well, you're not healthy too often and you
hurt too often. We we can't value is I mean,

(01:14:34):
only this guy's only played ten games. Granted the first
couple of years, not his own fault because he's behind
Tom Brady, but this one was his fault, and it was,
you know, being overly ambitious and not going out of bounds.
So I'm with him in terms of I think everybody
feels like this should be a year, should be a
year where you're gonna see a ton of growth from

(01:14:59):
the Niners. They were they they were a couple of
years ago, where the Raiders were last year and they
had to get rid of some bad contracts and had
to figure things out, and they got a quarterback, and
you know, now they're trying to kind of get back
and be competitive and have an overall depth of talent,
which it feels like they have done. It feels like

(01:15:19):
they've done, but you've gotta have Garoppolo in order to
make it all come together, not just because the money
he makes, but the way in which their offense is
built and the coach who they played for and his style.
So I'm gonna meet Colin halfway. I don't think it
makes it a bad contract because he got hurt last year.

(01:15:39):
I do think it makes it a bad contract if
he gets hurt again this year. I'm still shaking my
head over this idea. You know, Floridians are supposed to
have their homes at eighty two degrees sells US eighty
two degrees fahrenheit when they go to sleep, Like, I
can't think of a human being alive who's under the
age of seventy. Now, once you get to seventy, all
bets are off. People like it hot. Maybe it helps

(01:16:01):
their rumor toward arthrightest, I'm not really sure. Go to
my mom's house, who is over seventy, and you go
in and you immediately starting start sweating, and she'll have
the air conditioning on. It will be in the set
and be in the like high seventies. Well, I had
to turn the air on. It was eighty degrees, Like,
are you kidding me. I couldn't breathe in here. If
I want to go to the sauna, I would go
down to to to work out eighties some degrees inside

(01:16:24):
the house. I want that, sucker. I want to see
my own breath. The strongest people sometimes are the most sensitive,
just like the funniest or the darkest. We'll get that next.

are Oh, the Cowboys love drama. But the reason they

(01:17:05):
love drama is they have a lot of drama queens.
I just do invite the drama. I don't think Jerry
Jones was inviting drama when he was asked this question
after the preseason game Saturday Night, what you best negotiator
with Zeke Polar So he says, Zeke who Tony Pollard

(01:17:28):
has a really good day, five carries forty two yards
running behind that incredible offensive line against the two's of
the l A rams out in Hawaii, and he says,
Zeke who And it's clearly a joke. Everybody knows it's
a joke. Everybody well, with the exception of of Ezeki Elliott.

(01:17:49):
And this is from his agent. Um his his agent,
his name is Rocky Arsenal. And Rocky Arsenal says, I
and think it was funny, and neither did Zeke. We
actually thought it was disrespectful. Arsenal said that Elliott continues
to contract hold out training in Cabo San Lucas at

(01:18:09):
a great facility. UH. The Cowboys owner Jerry Jones then
clarified he wanted Ellie to know that he was just
cracking a joke, a jicks at Zeke's expense, no big deal.
And by the way, uh. Jones went on to say,
he knows exactly what to do. He knows what to do.

(01:18:31):
So he goes out there and he's talking about Tony Pollard.
If he continues to the next several weeks, he's gonna
be right in the middle of it. Early and a
really compliment to what we're doing with Zeke. Not replaced that.
I mean, nobody can replace that. Nobody's getting cut here,
but it will certainly be a great compliment. I can
picture those guys, uh, those guys, same sets at the

(01:18:53):
same time out there and really given defense fits. So
he's given love to a rookie you they draft in
the fourth round who's having a nice preseason camp. I
always believe that stories or anecdotes or quotes get released
for a reason. Oftentimes you hear about the back and

(01:19:14):
forth negotiation. You're only going to hear about that when
one side is upset on one side. Like, if the
negotiations are going well, you don't hear from anybody, You
just don't. You only hear from people when one side
is upset. And in this particular case, clearly obviously that

(01:19:34):
one side is the camp of Zeke Elliott. They're not
getting what they want, they're not getting the movement that
they want, and they're looking for anything, just trying to
try and to try and make the Cowboys feel compelled
to give them what they want. Oh, we feel disrespected.
You know how, you you've been made more respected, give

(01:19:55):
us more money, like Jerry Jones gonna be sitting there
going like, what are you even talking about? It wasn't disrespectful,
funny joke. Nobody thinks Tony Pollard is better than Zeke Elliott.
Nobody thinks we've actually forgotten about a Zeke Elliott. We
have an offer out there for two for Ezeki Ellott
to make him somewhere top five. Contract is running back.

(01:20:15):
These two things are not related. It can be funny,
it can be a joke at Zeke's expense because he's
not there, and not be disrespectful. These two things can
go inside. Uh, I just you end up making yourself
into somebody who you don't. I just I can't cheer

(01:20:37):
for you. You know, I like Ezeki Ellott, but this
just this idea. Oh man, I found it to be disrespectful,
and so did you know, and so did my client. Really,
that's disrespectful, No disrespectful as if there is no contract

(01:20:58):
extension offered. Disrespectful is if they call you and tell
you to get your ass back to work. That's disrespectful,
you know. But this is the problem with agents. This
is where you know, it's like it's it's like we
were kind of critical earlier today of um of Drew
Rosenhounse with Antonio Brown, like a really good agent is

(01:21:22):
going to find a way to tell his client you're
not winning this one. It's not great. I've had agents
tell me that it's not it's never me, never me,
never me, never me. That doesn't mean it was never me, right,
And I mean, look, Rocket, Rocky YARDSTI has been doing
this long enough. He represents Marshall Falk. That's exactly what

(01:21:44):
he's doing. But he also knows that he's becoming kind
of that cliche sycophant agent. Anybody who says anything against
my client is bad and I'm and we are the
good people, and they're being disrespectful. And the way to
make to feel more respective is to give us more money.
And you're like, what, you can crack a joke at

(01:22:07):
somebody's expense and it not be disrespectful. And that's exactly
what was it. It was the perfect tone. I challenge
anybody to think otherwise, especially when you at the back
end of it, you're like, it's not gonna place Zeke.
Nobody thinks he's gonna replace Zeke. Now, if you want
to get down to why running backs are less valuable,
is because they are in fact replaceable. Can you replace

(01:22:30):
them with one guy? No, That's what makes Zeke special
is that he's a one stop shop. He's a three
down back. But you're gonna place some with three guys
at a fraction of the cost and probably have similar production,
if not better. So I understand Rocky Arch Rocky Arsenal's
logic here, but the way it comes out is you're

(01:22:51):
getting super mad about nothing, which means you're really upset
about something and you're not getting it accomplished. And you
say you're super mad about the other thing. Might making
sense there, Like if you're just upset about where you
are contractually, then just stay there, don't let any little

(01:23:15):
thing bother you. Don't making about the right things, the
important things, the special things, and not the funny things.
When when did America lose their sense of humor? I mean,
can somebody tell me that? Like I did this thing.
I did a fundraising dinner about two weeks ago and

(01:23:39):
Eddie Murphy was in the crowd and I asked Eddie Murphy.
I was like, man, you you're doing a Netflix specially? Yeah?
In a year, I said, how are you going to
do a Netflix special? When I mean, you were always
kind of boardline of what was offensive back then. Now
Eddie Murphy was making Bill Cosby jokes before it was
cool to make Bill Cosby jokes. But that actually points
out that he's been a reverend for all of his life.

(01:24:01):
And I don't know if we are I believe we've
left the era of a reverence. Just it's really hard
to get away from. Maybe comedians, those are the guys
that get kind of the last um. Maybe comedians are
the ones that get the last free pass in society.
But it all depends upon your audience. But I mean

(01:24:25):
Jerry Jones, who could not have been more effuse in
his paraise of Dak Prescott, who could not have been
more supportive of Dak Prescott, Like this is the problem
that really ticks you off, Like Rocky at Rocky Arsenal, Hey, dude,
when your guy got suspended, the guy who went to
the mattresses for you was Jerry Jones. He likes your guy,
he stood by your guy. He's he's helped them build
a football football team in offense around your guy. So yeah,

(01:24:49):
everybody's a little tired of him sitting out. But that
even wasn't even about sitting out. It was about a kid,
Tony Poler having a good day. That zeke who ha
ha ha. It's funny not offensive. You can be funny.
You can even be funny at somebody else's expense and
not be offended offensive. I don't know exactly where the

(01:25:11):
line is drawn, but that is an over the line.
I know that. I believe that to be a fact.
So I also think you can in fact be offensive
these days. You're allowed to be offensive, not grotesquely, not
necessarily racially, but you can be offensive. We don't live

(01:25:33):
in a world where nothing is funny. And sometimes, yeah,
you're gonna make fun of people. You gotta you gotta
be able to take a joke if you're gonna make
a joke. But I just don't know when we lost
a sense of humor and our snow of all people
knows that knows it really really well. All right? Coming
up next, Tyler Dunn covers the NFL for Bleacher Report.

(01:25:53):
We've got a million things to get to. How concerns
the Arizona Cardinals. B um, This has been a pretty
season in which we haven't heard anything from the Seahawks,
and now all we're hearing is draft pick goes down
with injury. What our expectations of Jimmy Jimmy g and
had the Patriots now found a way to get Josh
Gordon and developed that past that that the wide receiver

(01:26:15):
right receiving group that they didn't have last year. This
time we'll discuss next. Fox Sports Radio has the best
sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our
shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within the
I Heart Radio app search f s R to listen
live Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I don't I

(01:26:39):
haven't gotten One person was like, dude, I like my
house hot h Adams says, I'd never get to sleep
in the house of our eighty two degrees seventy three
when I go to sleep, and it moves up to
seventy nine by morningtime, gradually stays there until five pm.
That that that even that seems warm. My boy, Clay says,
uh sixty nine or lower at all times period. Tyler

(01:27:01):
Dunn joins just cover the NFL for Bleacher Report. Tyler,
we were there's some report from Florida, Florida TV station.
She says, your air conditioning unit supposed to be said
at like two to go to sleep. That sounds ridiculous.
What's your what's your sleeping temp? Yeah, that seems a
little high, although it's different down in Florida. I get that,

(01:27:22):
but it's uh, that's always the husband wife battle, all right,
We we uh, we love to try to keep it,
keep the A C offices as much as possible. And
then you know, it's pretty hot for that my pregnant wife.
So I end up putting the A C back on,
probably a little a little more than now I I
That's what I've always done. Whatever she wants, right, Like,
she likes it relatively cold. Maybe not as cold as

(01:27:43):
I like it, but generally relatively cold. And it probably
started when she was pregnant, the first time she's pregnant,
and then we kind of went on from from there. Um,
let me start with the Antonio Brown thing. I just
I don't get it. I don't understand why I and
I think that was what kind of the rates were.
I felt like that's what you heard from Mike Mayock, right,

(01:28:03):
which is like, look, we support you in this thing,
but you lost. Like, let's just get ready to play
some football. Everybody else is ready to play football. What
is your deal? It was like the old handshake between
Pete Carroll and hardball. What's your deal? Bro? That's what
it just felt like, Isn't that? Does that felt you? Yeah?
I don't know how many people are really going to

(01:28:24):
bat for Antonio Brown in this situation. I mean, yeah,
he wants a helmet that said he feels comfortable with,
and he wants is a vision to be whatever he
used to whatever he wants it to be. But my gosh,
every other player is fine with this, has adapted, just
realizes a state for helmet is for the best. And yeah,
you could just see total exasperation and Mike Mayock's body

(01:28:46):
language and his words. I mean he I mince words.
So I think they have reached that point where Antonio
Brown either has to be all in or all out.
And you know, you would think he just plays at
the end of the day. But if it's not this, Doug,
it's something else, right, I mean, something else is gonna
happen here, and it's it shouldn't be a shock to
the Raiders. They knew what they were getting into, Yeah,
and they can. I think they commenced themselves otherwise, right,

(01:29:08):
they had to that he commenced themselves, like, no, he's
just mister stood. No, he's really good guy. It's about money.
Will give money and it'll be better now he's got money,
and he's just he's the he's the same guy. Are
the Steelers a better football team in spite of the
fact they lost? Uh, they're two most talented skill position players,
you know that. That's where I'd said, no, I mean,

(01:29:30):
you let these talents walk out the door. I mean
these are too I mean canton like talents here and
leving On bel Antonio brows. I don't think they're better,
but you know what, maybe you don't have that headache
at the worst possible time like like they've had in
the past. And remember being around that team before that
Jaguars playoffs game. They are way more talented than the Jaguars.

(01:29:50):
I mean, my gosh, you get Blake Bortles at home
in the playoffs? Are you kidding me? And you could
just kind of see a little over competence here, a
little over competence, and you know, I guess that's when
building the kind of locker room that you want does
come into play. I mean, I tend to think you'd
rather have the more talented players. But something was up there,
something wasn't right, and maybe in this case it is

(01:30:12):
a little addition by subtraction for the Steelers. Tyler Dunn
covers the NFL for Bleach Report kind of to spend
some time with this Doug Gollip show here on Fox
Sports Radio. How important is that Josh Gordon addition to
the Patriots. Oh my gosh, it's huge. It's you know,
I thin think that goes without saying. And this is
a team that just always adapts, always times a way
to evolve, and it seemed like they were really doing

(01:30:34):
that with the run game, adding all these running backs.
They drafted another one high and you know that they're
not gonna be afraid to just run the ball and
keep Patrick Mahomes off the field like they did in
the FC title game. But you know, Josh Gordon has
it together. You're talking about one of the best deep
threats in the game. I mean that totally changes everything
and makes Julian Edimin that much better. It gives them
another threat. All of a sudden, they're deep at the

(01:30:55):
position we all thought was going to be thin um.
You know, that's that's a big it. But if Josh
Gordon gonna seat anywhere, you would you would think it's
with Bill Belichick and the Patriots, one would think. But
I guess we'll see. I mean, he was good last year.
But then you know again, like how close is he
to being gone? And how much did they integrate him
fearing that he could be gone at at at any

(01:31:17):
moment um. Zeke's agent, Rocky Arsenal, said that they were
offended that it was disrespectful that Jerry Jones said Zeke,
who because Tony Pollard had a good day, Like, I
know what offensive sounds like in it? Well, borderlines like
that sounded funny, and yeah it was at Zeke's expense,
but not a big deal. Why are they so tight

(01:31:39):
right now? Yeah, I'm with your dog. That seems like,
you know, a little little over sensitivity at play. My gosh,
if you're genuinely upset about a comment like that, I mean,
we all saw the video of Jerry Jones saying that.
I mean, my gosh. Because you're legitimately offended by that,
then how are you playing football? You know? And that's

(01:32:00):
why I think a lot of it's probably popstering, right,
I mean, they're they're playing that game right now, where
anything set publicly has some alterior motives. So I would
think it's that hope it's that because I mean, man,
it shouldn't be a shock. I mean, all running backs
are in the same boat. I mean, they all want
to get paid more than they're making. And Jerry Joe's

(01:32:20):
not kidding. I mean they might be able to put
somebody else back there and be okay. Yeah, especially with
their early season schedule. I think that actually is a possibility.
What is the what the top get good bye? Then? Yeah,
what is the top dollar amount you give Dak Prescott
for a year? You know, that seems like it's gonna happen,

(01:32:42):
And that's just a case of two sides kind of,
you know, playing their hand the best they can. I know,
Dak Prescott caught a ton of craft a ton of
backlash for the forty million year report, but I mean
they know that they're not going to get that, and
then the Cowboys know that. I mean, they they're both
best for each other, and I think in the end
they figure out a number, whether that's you know, thirty two,

(01:33:04):
thirty three, I would think that's what they get to,
and I'd really be shocked if they didn't get something
done at some point. I mean, this is a quarterback
Jerry Jones, and every opportunity praises My gosh, he's not
He's not saying Dak Prescott's name and asking who that's
for sure. I mean he he loves Jack Prescott, Dak Prescott,
you know, in that offense, and he took some big
steps forward. If they can get him Ari Cooper done

(01:33:25):
a year from now, they have something building there. It
just makes too much sense for everybody. It does make
a ton of sense. Um, give me your personal expectations
for Jimmy Garoppolo and Jimmy Garoppolo, they believe in San Francisco.
I think that. You know that you talk to people
out there, they're talking super Bowl. They don't care who

(01:33:47):
hears it. You know, Fred Warner even put it as
super Bowl or bus kind of season. And it does
all start with the quarterback. You want to believe because
of Kyle Shanahan and his incredible play calling, putting players
in the best possible position. We've seen it in Atlanta,
We've we've seen it in McVeigh. We've seen it. Um,
you know what, Matt, everybody on that coaching tree. I

(01:34:08):
guess what gives me a little bit of pause is
kind of a gave John Lynch a little bit of pause,
and we talked about it. They just have to see it.
I mean, he's been hurt, he's been waiting for this
moment for five six years now, and he doesn't really
have a legit bona fide wide receiver threat. I mean,
this is where you can really criticize these drafts. We've

(01:34:30):
added a lot of second rounders, third rounders. You know,
I know they had George Kittle, but you need that
stud outside. I mean, in Atlanta he had Julio Jones.
You're gonna be a pretty good play caller when you've
got Julio Jones. He doesn't have that in San Francisco.
So that's what gives me a little pause. But you know,
he's he's got all the spills and he's got the talent,
and I guess finally, well we'll see it. Jadeveon Clowney

(01:34:53):
is like not being discussed nationally as a holdout, and
and there's this weird they don't have a GM. Bill
O'Brien is okay moving on for him. They held on
him to to to him too long to where you
can't give him a contract extension if you trade for him.
In an amazing like Jadeveon Clowney, the guy who, because
of one incredible play in college and his ridiculous physique,
no one could stop talking about. I don't know if

(01:35:15):
it's because it's Houston. I don't know if it's because
he's been injured or overshadowed by J. J. Watt, But honestly,
rack your brain thinking how much of people actually talked
about the fact that J. Jadeveon Clowny has not reported yet?
All right? I mean the guy had but nine sacks
last year and nine and a half a year before that.
Unbelievable talent that size, that to be so rare. I

(01:35:36):
just think it's the case of no player that you know,
wh when he when he has the opportunity to chase
the contract, earn a contract, if that carrots kind of
dangle in front of him. I mean, this is just
what you hear around the league from scouts from exact. Yeah,
he'll be a heck of a player. He's exactly what
you think you'd be. But I think here's a little
bit of fear out of teams that when he gets paid,

(01:35:59):
maybe he won't be this same player. Um, I think
there's a real fear there with with some teams, and
maybe that's why things are just kind of, you know,
in a holding pattern here. We'll see. I mean, maybe
he just you know, gets his contract and shut everybody
up with with the way he plays because he has
that kind of talent. But yeah, there's there's a reason
that's kind of lingering on here. It's sure sure feels sure,

(01:36:19):
sure feels that way. I think he's gonna have to
play on the franchise tag. I think almost all these
guys are gonna have to show up. The most interesting
one is is is Zeke because he's super talented, but
he's not even in franchise tag. He's in a regular contract.
He's not a free agent right now. So it's it's
it's going to be interesting. Um, Andrew Luck, this is
a weird story. It was a calf, but not an achilles.

(01:36:41):
Then it was an ankle, then it was a bone.
Now it's in a high ankle sprain. Does he play
Week one? I'm going to say no. I just just
just taking the Colts at their word in the past.
And you know, it's it's not even the Colts, it's
it's Andrew. In great story by Stephen Holder in The
Athletic last week, just kind of detailing how protective Andrew

(01:37:05):
Luck is about every injury he's ever kind of dealt with.
It makes him very uncomfortable to talk about. It's a
very private person by nature. And you know, I think
that just that cloud of uncertainty around him, that's a
sense out of Indianapolis at this point seems it seems real.
I mean, there's a reason they're not just saying he's already,
and I think they're trying to protect Andrew Luck in

(01:37:26):
that regard. So I would think they're gonna think long
term with Andrew Luck and want him fully healthy inter
October November December, that it makes sense to rest him
if he's not ready. But that's it's kind of hunch
as much as anything. I'll tell you what. That division,
though it used to be the such a laughing stock
in the NFL, all of a sudden it's pretty loaded.

(01:37:46):
I mean, they might not want to sit Andrew Luck
for that long. And you're talking about four teams that
all believe they can win the division legitimately it's um yeah,
I mean, let's see what happens with with Jacksonville. I
mean it just they had the one year. Obviously the
Texans won eleven games, but they seem to it just

(01:38:08):
I don't know. Uh yeah. And then Tennessee and we're
waiting for Marcus Mariota to be Marcus Mariota. That would
and I just don't and I think it's the Colts division.
But he's got to be healthy and we have no
idea if he is, and the extent of the injury.
It's a fascinating Tyler, great stuff. Uh keep that, keep

(01:38:29):
that a C cranked down so your wife is happy,
and thanks so much for joining us. You got it.
I'm gonna work work on the dial here right after
this call. Be sure to catch live edition so the
Doug Dot Leaps Show week days at noon eastern three
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app down. Oh yeah, do you want to bet?

(01:38:53):
What we try and do every day is find something
that jumps out to us and says, have you want
to put some money on it? This feels like a
good idea, So I have. I have been vociferous in
my belief that long term not a big buyer, intol.
Lamar Jackson just just not. His inability to throw the
ball accurately is really the biggest logical reason why. We've

(01:39:19):
also pointed out to you though, that they have a
very very soft and amenable schedule to start the season. Right.
They start off with the Dolphins, who stink, and the
Cardinals at home before they go to the Chiefs and
they get the Browns at home. Um. Not that the
Chiefs and the Browns are pushovers, but if you can
get to two and o to start the year, gives

(01:39:41):
you a great shot in this a team that made
the playoffs last year. They have built this structure of
this team around Lamar Jackson, and the over under for
overall for touchdowns for Lamar Jackson is fifteen and a half. Now,
let's give you some perspective on what fifteen and a
half touchdowns would would mean. Um, Lamar Jackson is not

(01:40:06):
a great thrower, but they have added pieces like Hollywood
Brown to stretch the defense. And he does have a
big arm, even if it's not an accurate arm, especially
on shortened underneath stuff, which leads me to believe they're
gonna try and tip and have some chunk plays. I
guess the parallels are two guys. One is Cam Newton

(01:40:26):
and the others Deshaun Watson. Maybe we could throw in
some other guys. But look at at Cam Newton and
what he uh, what did it even last year? Right?
Cam Newton? Last year twenty four touchdowns throwing the football
and then you know, running the football. Cam Newton had

(01:40:47):
four touchdowns and this is with a bad shoulder, So
fifteen and a half touchdowns even if they shorten the game.
I like Lamar Jackson the over You don't believe me,
I won't bet? Oh? Really you want to bet? Yes?
I I want? I want to bet music. You like

(01:41:08):
that bet? You like the the overrun on Lamar Jackson,
even if you don't love Lamar Jackson. Yeah, it feels
a little low. I mean, just by simple logic, I
guess you're sort of hoping that he plays every game.
But if he plays every game, you know, at least
one passing touchdown per game doesn't sound too outlandish. I mean,

(01:41:28):
he's bound to have one game where even if he
throws two or three touchdowns in a game, he may
follow that up with like two or three interceptions or
an interception in a fumble or something along those lines.
But it it seems like it's not a very high
bar to pass for Lamar Jackson. I tend to agree
with you. It's it's almost it is one of those
what am I missing type things? You know, like what,

(01:41:50):
what exactly am I missing that that Vegas seems to
be getting and I'm going to take the overrun. I'm
gonna you know, um, what is that? What's the story
behind all the negativity with jay Z's partnership with the NFL.
Now Kenny Stills has come out and says it doesn't
doesn't sit right with me, like, I don't I don't understand.

(01:42:13):
Um jay Z said, I think we're past kneeling. I
think it's time for action. You know. Kenny still says
he doesn't seem very informed some of the ways he
answered the questions talking about moving past kneeling, like he
ever protested he's not an NFL player. I mean, this

(01:42:34):
is really the biggest issue with with this movement is
that it is a broken movement and everybody's pulling in
different directions. This is no different than a team and
if a team is not playing the same pull in
the same direction, it's not gonna be successful if a
movement some guys are still because the the I'm not

(01:42:54):
wrong here to think that the kneeling was to bring
attention and that we all understood why play as we kneeling,
or why players some continue to kneel. We do understand
that there's there's no one who's watched the NFL game
that's seen a player neil that it doesn't know why
they're doing it. Okay, so if we know why you're

(01:43:14):
doing it, then the next step is doing something about it,
which is kind of what jay Z said. I don't know,
I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't understand. I
don't understand. Everybody wants they want Colin Kaepernick to be
a martyr. Colin Kaepernick has been heard from, with exception

(01:43:36):
of little clips that are put out on social media.
We have no idea if he wants to play, what
he wants to do, what he would sound like speaking
on said matter. And so jay Z sat there and said, like, hey,
I got a chance to do a partnership deal with
the NFL and to make a legit change. This is
the same argument about whether or not you go to

(01:43:57):
the White house after you win a championship. It I
have people my family despised Trump. I would do it.
It's my only chance to get at the table or
to be inside that Oval office, to throw out a question,
to try and understand some of the logic to things
and maybe make him understand some of your logic. But

(01:44:19):
that's what this is. This is you can't ever do
business with the NFL and help forward the cause because
Colin Kaepernick's out of a job. Like I don't buy
that one at all, But put cratic Kenny steels down
as the latest guy to take a shot at at
jay Z's partnership with the National Football League. I think

(01:44:41):
it's a good thing. Man. Well, he wasn't kneeling, Okay,
he put his support behind Colin Kaepernick, his wife. You know,
he chose not to perform at the Super Bowl. His
wife did perform at the Super Bowl, and it wasn't
it wasn't always perfectly received. But the idea like, wait,

(01:45:03):
you can collect a check from the NFL, but jay
Z can't work in part it doesn't make any sense
to either that. That's a contradiction. Good news for one
of the best in the game. We'll share with you next.
Be sure to catch live editions of the Doug Dot
Leaps Show week days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific.
Doug Got Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio every day at
this time. We get you caught up on many stories

(01:45:24):
as possible. We do so by getting to the press press.
You know, when you're endlessly scrolling the social media page
and suddenly you see it. It's your friend Dylan and
Havana on another vacation. What do you do? You hate
like his photo and immediately go to hotels dot com

(01:45:45):
to book a vacations so epics, so awesome, so sweet
that your friends will hate like your trip hotels dot com.
Be there? Do that get rewarded? What do you got there? Um?
Miss deb Carson, Hello Doug. We're gonna art with happy
Red Sox fans right now, Boston. A Chris Sale will
likely avoid Tommy John surgery. Went to see Dr James

(01:46:08):
Andrews earlier today and Dr Andrews says, nope, he just
has inflammation in the elbow. He does not have significant
UCL damage as was feared, So no Tommy John surgery
at the moment for Chris Sale. M M, well, that's
that's that's good news. Um, the question is can you pitch?
Can you actually pitch better? Well, that's that is the question. Yeah,

(01:46:29):
that's the that's the bigger, bigger question, exactly. Well, we
and we have the answer to the question. When will
Cam Newton make his preseason debut? Coach Yes. Coach Ron
Rivera said earlier today it'll be Thursday against the Patriots.
Newton coming off surgery to repair his throwing shoulders, So
we will see how Cam is looking on Thursday night

(01:46:50):
at Gillette Stadium. M hmm, well, you get to see
him in New York City. I I portion in front
of Dave Gentleman as well, who's was part of that
Charlotte Carolina front office formerly their GM. So there's a
lot of ties, a lot of ties that bind. Um.
I don't know. I'm I'm fascinated by Cam Newton. I
do think he has some weaponry around him, but he

(01:47:13):
just you know. And I'm also led to believe that
having the team surgeon do it, not going to Dr
and James Andrews, leads me to believe it wasn't a major,
major sold shoulder surgery. That said, if his shoulder ain't right,
he can't throw football, and he's always had problems with accuracy.
Does not vote well for their season, absolutely not. Um. Well,
you know all of us had our eyes on Zion Williamson,

(01:47:35):
of course during the tournament and during the draft, the
top overall pick. Though in the survey of the NBA's
rookies who were asked which member the twenty nineteen class
would have the best career, it was not Zion Williamson.
In fact, Zion got only five percent of the votes. Instead,
it's his teammated Duke cam Reddish, who garnered nineteen percent

(01:47:56):
of the votes. So Reddish expected to have the biggest
NBA career according to his peers, and he was followed
by John Morant of the Grizzlies with six DeAndre Hunter
of the Hawks with eleven per cent. Yeah, the Cameratishing
is weird. You know. I think a lot of people
in the NBA love his talent. There's some personality quirks
that they maybe don't love. But he can definitely shoot

(01:48:19):
the basketball, even he didn't shoot it well last year.
For Duke, I think everybody thinks with the space to
the NBA, he'll be able to shoot it. He has
a massive amount of upside massive and now he plays
with Trey Young, who's going to be able to create
shots for him. But I think we're we're under selling
Zion Williamson and there's some jealousy in that from other rookies. Absolutely.
While moving over to college football, defending champ Clemson number

(01:48:42):
one in the AP pre season Top twenty five for
the first time. So Trevor Lawrence and that's what that is,
what the AP says, first time ever the preseason number one.
They are followed by Alabama at number two. Georgia Oakhoma,
Ohio State round out the top five. Never really understood

(01:49:03):
the Associated press pool, although I'm not sure the coach's
pole works either. Just the idea that people that cover
teams that have to go to cover games can't see
all the other teams play, whether they play at the
same time or not. Like you have to go in
the press, you have to go down to the press conference,
you have to write your story, Like those are the
people that have votes. I've I've never understood of all
the things in the last twenty five years, I don't
understand why me Colin clay Um, you know, obviously clatt

(01:49:30):
like these are the guys, all those guys on our set,
Matt Leiner, Reggie Bush, they should have votes, not not
not ap writers and not uh and and not as
much coaches, and I I think you know, obviously there's
some always gonna be some location bias, but if you
spread it out enough, you'll be fine. Well, we know obviously,

(01:49:53):
Jalen Hurts no longer with Obama. He is now at
Oklahoma and it seems to be working out for the transfer.
Oklahoma Lincoln Riley announced today that the former Obama quarterback
will be the Sooner starting quarterback when the season starts.
If he can make Jalen Hurts into a consistent thrower
of the football, then he's officially the quarterback whisper you know.

(01:50:14):
I mean, Look, Kyler Murray came in as a super
highly touted prospect and wasn't great, sat for a couple
of years red shirts, than sat and and exploded on
the scene, and he was better from from his time,
but he the red shirting made him better. The same
thing could be said for Baker Mayfield, who could throw beforehand,
started as a freshman at Texas Tech. Jalen started a
freshman sophomore, but has never been a consistent thrower of

(01:50:37):
the football. Um if this offense, and remember they've only
really had six months together, all of a sudden, he
makes him into a consistent thrower. I he's He's quarterback
Jesus and the Sooners opened the season September one, hosting Houston.
Also another starter announced today, Ohio State coach Ryan Day
has named Justin Fields as the buckeyes starting quarterback. M hmm,

(01:51:01):
well that's not a surprise. Justin Fields, the number one
rated prospect in America, went to Georgia behind Jake from
couldn't beat him out. I was most surprised that he
got to play right away. But we'll see, you know,
like I get that Ryan Day is the chosen one
to take over for rb Meyer. But there's something special
about er Meyer that he won everywhere, and you know,

(01:51:21):
it's a it's a hard act to follow. Don't believe me.
Look at Bowling Green, don't believe me. Look at Utah
to believe me. Look at Florida, don't believe Well, let's
see what happens at Ohio State, and Fields will get
to start his Buckeye's career, opening against Florida Atlantic on
August one. My favorite story of the day. Warriors star
Steph Currey announced plans he's going to help resurrect and

(01:51:42):
support Howard University's men's and women's golf teams for the
next six years. Made a seven figure donation. Howard reportedly
disbanded golf in the nineteen seventies, but with Curry's donation,
they aim to have teams in place for the one season.
That's pretty amazing. Yeah, like Howard University, he has no

(01:52:03):
true connection to, just something he wants to do. Yeah,
and they're going to take them. You know, they've been
I guess they were a Division two back in the seventies.
That was the the when they started looking back in
the school's history to figure out how long have we
not had golf? They said the seventies at some point.
Nobody could pinpoint exactly when, but they would have been
D two And I guess they're going to make an
attempt to be a D one team. And of course

(01:52:24):
Steph Curry has great passion for golf and and and
this is this is interesting because Christomers sorry talked about
a little bit last week with a with a with
a tweet about how college basketball players should go play
for hbc U S and I agree. The problem with
HBC uses they're just not well funded and they're not

(01:52:45):
you know, they're not high level Division one programs and
they don't have big time coaches or facilities, and so
you can't really develop the same level. We'll see if
this is a trend started by Steph Curry. Well, I
like if that's where his hard is. I like him
putting his money where his hard is, so help a
lot of young people. Um and yes, and we have
been watching Holy moly, his his golf show by the way,

(01:53:05):
so yeah, that's uh, anyway, another subject, but anyway, that's
a lot of fun. And that is the press. Doug
get out there and pressed, that was the press. What's
the guy's name? We were both watching last night music
the on America's Got Talent. I don't remember his full name,
but it's Cody something. Look, yeah, code. He's he's autistic

(01:53:29):
and blind and um, I mean it's Cody Lee and
he's saying bridge over trouble Water last night on on
America's Got Talent, and I'm just it's the most amazing
thing I've ever seen. Like he's he's not nonverbal, but
I mean clearly autistic, clearly blind, and then all of

(01:53:52):
a sudden, he starts playing the piano and singing, and
you're it's a. It's a it's like the human being
inside comes out and he starts seeing how beautiful you're.
It's like, I've seen some amazing movement moment in sports.
That was one of the most maybe most amazing moments
both every time I've seen it perform in in in television.
It's crazy, Like my phone's blowing up, my kids are crying,

(01:54:14):
my wife's crying. Drew Brees is gonna join us tomorrow.
Um God, Kenny Bridgewater didn't look great. It didn't look great.
But last Drew Brees about the quarterback competitions with Philip Rivers,
about this year's team, about Mike Thomas getting twenty million dollars.
That's tomorrow on The Dug Golip Show. Fox Sports Radio
