Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom, What Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio Today, Coming to you from Tribeca,
New York. I gotta google what Tribeca is all about.
I how did they come up with the name Tribeca?
Don't start with gangs of New York and all your
your references. Great to be here tomorrow. You'll see me

(00:23):
on First Things First on Fox Sports one. So I
got to come back to the East side not as
good as the West and the best side. So I
missed my boy John Ramos, I tweeted out about co
workers having bad breath. It has nothing to do with
John Ramos or Ryan Music or Dan Buyer or whomever. Uh.
It was just more of a just a question that

(00:43):
I've always had. I want to come up with I
want to come up with the international symbol for Hey, dude,
I love you, but right now you're breathing dragon breath
in my face and so you gotta take care of
it because there's no real nice way to say you've
got bad breath. Anyway, it had nothing to do with you, guys.
So if you read my tweet and took it to

(01:03):
meaning that music has bad breath, that that's not it
when you're mar I've been married for seventeen years. That's
enough time for my wife to say, hey, you got
really bad breath. Brush your teeth. But what was happening
was a couple of people I used to work with.
We're texting me about guys we used to work with
that have really bad breath, and we were laughing about it,
and I was like, we never did find a way
to solve that problem. So I hope ramos buyer music

(01:29):
at all. If you thought that tweet was about you,
it is not. But you can always who says no
to a breath mint? Right? Adults don't say no to DApps.
Adults don't say no to breath mints, and adults or vegetables, uh, knowingly, willfully, willing,
willingly at restaurants. There's nothing wrong with some toothpaste every

(01:49):
once in a while. I agree toothpaste works too, But
I mean, just do you like, do you carry toothpaste
with you? I brushed my teeth incessantly. I'm a three
four day, four day, four time of day guy. Uh
that that's just me. One time about Steve Kerr letting
the letting the team coach the team, although I could have.
You could have Ramos could have coached the team last

(02:10):
night to the win over the Phoenix Suns. Was it
about the Sons? Was it about Kerr? Was about his
player's ego? Or was it about something else? We'll get
to that upcoming. Chris Bruce Stard will join us as well.
But let's start with the story that won't go away.
As much as we wanted to go away, he won't
go away. Is LaVar ball. It's LaVar ball, right, we

(02:39):
keep trying to not talk about LaVar ball. Don't say
LaVar ball. Don't say LaVar ball. Don't say LaVar ball.
Don't say LaVar ball. It's almost like this is an
underrated movie, underrated comedy. Austin powers Too. I know Ramos,
you've seen it. By the way, if you don't follow
John Ramos, you should on Twitter. Ramos does the John

(03:01):
Ramos Show, which he reviews. He's one of our senaphiles.
He does watch movies, reviews movies in his own lighthearted way.
I saw Austin Powers To three times in the theater
in the theater, and every time I laughed, and I
mean I literally laughed out loud. It was really funny.
Do you remember the scene with the mole Molly, Molly,

(03:27):
don't say mold, don't say mold, don't say mold. That's
almost how we feel about LaVar Ball. I don't want
to talk about LaVar Ball. I don't want to talk
about LaVar Ball. I don't want to talk about LaVar Ball.
But yesterday LaVar Ball was quoted by a Lithuanian journalist
who's like the last of the Mohicans covering the LaVar
Balls and lie Angelo and LaMelo Ball. Saga in Lithuania

(03:51):
is saying he wanted, you know, if after year three,
all three players are on the Lakers, they don't draftle
Angelo this offseason, they don't have all three balls on
the on the Lakers roster, that a Lonzo won't re
sign with the Lakers. It should be pointed out that
the Lakers actually have his rights for up to four years,

(04:14):
with no chance of him signing elsewhere. So sometimes we
missed the fact that LaVar is so far afield he
doesn't even know the facts of the contracts his son signed.
But we as much as we try, we try, and
I don't want to talk about LaVar Ball. Here we

(04:34):
are again, what's funny about Lavarro. What's ironic about LaVar
is the Lakers have been playing well without his son healthy.
The Lakers have had no issues and no issues with
their coach. None, no issues with their coach. Since LaVar
Ball has stopped being quoted because Jeff Goodman came back

(04:56):
Stateside to ESPN, Alonzo balls in the news only because
his girlfriend apparently is pregnant. Like that news ain't ain't great.
It's not the worst thing in the world when two
people are gonna have a kid, like I have three kids.
I love kids, but I'm I don't believe that was

(05:17):
part of of LaVar Ball's plan for world dominance was
to start having kids at the age of twenty. And
so with the other two brothers out of sight, out
of mind, with the var out of sight, out of mind,
the Lakers playing better, Alonzo injured, Alonzo impregnating his girlfriend.
Nothing about Alonzo the player here, LaVar inserts himself into

(05:42):
the story and whatever his intentions, by everyone's account inside
the NBA, outside the NBA, this is laughable. And as
much as I want to not talk about it and
not cover it and not allow people to have allowed

(06:03):
to have any validity. It is the kind of thing
to it you're like, all right, at some point they're
gonna have to get rid of this kid unless he's
so good. You know, it just doesn't matter because I
can say I don't want to talk about it, but
people do. They just do. I don't understand it. I

(06:26):
can't rationalize it. And one of the things one of
the theories in sports radio is you have to talk
about what everybody, the most people want to talk about.
National sports radio, you don't talk about what you want
to talk about. What I want to talk about his
bad breath. What I want to talk about is UH
is baseball players who continue to be unsigned. What I

(06:50):
want to talk about is UH college hoop and maybe
Lebron saying Trey Young needs to go to the NBA.
And it's really kind of peculiar that On is saying this,
even if he is right, it's not really his role.
And how much of that could you see as a
violation where he's connected with Rich Paul, that's his agency,

(07:14):
the potential for Rich Faul to represent Trey Young, like
all of that is interesting to me. But again, in
national sports trending, we talk about what people are most
talking about here's brandon ingram other Lakers. When I asked
him yesterday about how the locker room reacts when they
hear LaVar Ball stories, I think for us just really

(07:34):
just joke, funny games, just joking around with Alonzo about
it sometimes. But I don't think we take it that
a negative or think we still stick to what we
do every day daily. You have the daily routine of
what we do everything every day. But every time we
hear something or something about his father is just really
just funny games. We don't take him seriously, which as

(07:59):
much as that's we should handle in the media, and
sadly we don't. And some of that is because we
in the media don't know how to handle Twitter. We
react to Twitter as if it's completely real life. Some
of it also is what I'm doing today, which is
reacting to just the sheer number of stories and numbers
of comments, which does mean there's an appetite for a

(08:19):
conversation in regards to LaVar Ball. So as much as
we want to sit here and say like, well, look,
the Lakers don't take it seriously, we shouldn't take it seriously.
On the other hand, not taking his dad's comments seriously.
While it's the right thing to do, even that puts
a lonzo in a bad spot, doesn't it. Hey, dude,

(08:41):
your dad's your dad's a clown, Your dad's funny. Like
at first you laugh it off and then you're like, wait, no,
that's still my dad, And that's a guy who does
believe to have my best interest art and other people
are taking what he says seriously, and yet nobody else
takes him seriously. That one kind of hurts. So do
I think the Lakers have dad issues? They got one

(09:03):
dad issue, and he the message has not been received
from Lithuania as to stop talking about the Lakers. He
can't help himself. He can't help himself. Trump can't help
himself on tweeting. He can't help himself on commenting about
the Lakers, even though time and again he has been asked,

(09:24):
and I believe he has been told stop talking about
the Lakers. Eight seven seven nine nine Fox is the
phone number. Eight seven seven nine on Fox is the
phone number. We got Chris brussard Um music. Who else
we got coming up in the show. Matt Barnes will

(09:44):
join us, And we asked Matt Barnes, Matt Barnes. He
probably would would would have loved to coach the two
uh uh coach the Golden State Warriors last night. Whn't he?
I mean, that's that's like every player's dream. We I
get to drop the plays. I get to see what
what happens. Man. That's awesome. That's awesome. I'm intrigued to

(10:08):
see if he sees any negativity, anything negative about what
what was done yesterday. Zaisher's heck, don't. I can't find
that that negative part to it? If you missed it.
Steve Kerr let his team coach huddles right, let his
team coach the huddles while he kind of turned his
back and just talked to his um, his assistance as

(10:30):

nine on Fox the phone number. We'll get to that
after we get to Chris Bruce Sard. He'll tell us
what's really going on with the Lakers. Also, he has

(10:52):
some interesting things to say about how Isaiah Thomas felt
like he was treated during his short stint in Cleveland.
Chris Bruce sard around the corner. That's next. But first,

six nine, right? Is that right? Ramos? How does it work?

(12:58):
N because it has We used to give out those
the everyone used to do the spell out the numbers,
spell out the letters what you wanted, right, And I
don't know if people do that nearly as often anymore.
One eight seven seven on his six six three six nine.

(13:19):
What eight seven seven eight seven seven six three six nine.
That's it, man, I was so bad at that? Did you?
Could you just dump that and we can just reset
the complete segment all over again. Read the backlater again
here here we go's got live show Fox Sports Radio

(13:41):
eight seven seven six six three six nine. We may
give you a chance to be part of the show.
Doesn't happen enough? I know, I know, I actually have
lots of things to say, so too, does Chris Bruce Sard,
who was great today on Undisputed, was great today yesterday
on Undisputed. Chris, How how seriously should we take what

(14:03):
LaVar Ball has told this Lithuanian journalist. First of all,
thanks man for the compliment. Uh, looking forward to getting
back on the show with you on television. Always enjoy
hosting with you. Um. But look, I it is. It
is arguably the most ridiculous and damaging thing that LaVar

(14:25):
has said yet. And that's saying a lot um and
whether he really means it or not, if I'm the Lakers,
I'm taking it seriously. Um. I I don't think they
have to just trade Linzo now, But I think a
couple of things could happen. One, the Lakers could meet

(14:47):
with Linzo and say, do you feel like your dad.
I'm sure he'd say no. Then I I tell him,
you need to meet with your father and tell them
to don't say another word about the Lakers or we
will trade you. We will. But here's the thing, though,
They've told him not to say anything about the Lakers,
and they told Alonzo Alonso needs to step up. Look,

(15:12):
Lionso got a baby on the way, He's twenty years old,
he's making millions of dollars. It's time for him to
step to his dad. Not in an aggressive way, but
as like dad, Look, this is killing me. It might
get me traded. If you don't cut this out. You
gotta stop, or they do have another play. I've said magic,
you know, I said Linzo should do it, not magic.

(15:35):
Magic can now do it because look, LaVar's timing is horrible.
They're playing arguably their best basketball is a year eight
and five. In their last thirteen games without Linzo beat Okay,
see twice beat Boston, beat Indiana without Linzo, brandon Ingram
is actually probably playing the best stress of his career
so far. At point guard twenty point six and sisty

(15:59):
percent shooting and filling in for a LIONSO. And so
Magic can go to LaVar and say, look, if you
utter another word about the Lakers, we will trade lines
of period another word like Now Magic has leverage. Before

(16:19):
it looked like the Lakers needed Linzo Um you know it,
maybe it'll be their best young player or whatever. You
didn't have leverage. Now you got the cap one. You're
playing well without him too. You have the cap space
that will make you attractive. You're still the Lakers. And
and look, the Lakers are more attractive in free agency

(16:42):
without LIONSO, and not because of him, but because of
LaVar than they are with him. There Lebron James is
again I don't want to speak for Lebron with a certainty,
but haven't talked to people close to this situation. LaVar
is a deterrent to Lebron James coming here, and he

(17:03):
might be the Paul George. I've known Paul wants to
come here and all that, but who wants to put
up with that madness? And so Magic has all the leverage.
He could step the LaVar and give him an ultimatum.
And so I think that's how Asia handle it. And
if LaVar won't submit, so to speak, and fall in line,

(17:25):
then you trade him, because Doug, I know you don't.
I don't think you're that high on lines or as
it is, he would have to be ultra special to
put up with this stuff. He would have to be
a Hall of Fame type player, top five point guard
to put up with this stuff, not just a pretty
good starter. And so can't you just but listen, I

(17:49):
agree with you, and I think that the biggest problem
is that they have told him time and again to
stop talking about the Lakers, and he just can't help himself.
You know, Jeff Goodman kind of heat him up, and
he took debait. Now this is a Lithuanian journalist, and
and he takes debate and he keeps talking about it.
And look, we as journalists, we're taking the bait and

(18:10):
talking about a guy who is is out of sight,
is out of mind, has no idea about the inner
workings of the Lakers. So couldn't they just though, ignore
him and not draft flee Angelo Ball, which would just
tell you all you need to know about the fact
that they don't care about what LaVar Ball thinks of
the l A Lakers. Well, I think you'd have to

(18:32):
do that. You'd have to find out what the free
agents think. And Magic obviously has been nailed for tampering,
you know, twice already, So I'm not saying tamper. But
once you get your chance in free agency to talk
to the guys, you you gotta find that out. Is
LaVar Ball and Deterrent will you come here without? And

(18:55):
you know, look if they and I don't want to
get too far ahead of our sales with the Brian
stuff because we don't know if he's coming or not.
But if we know that Lebron will tell a franchise
what he thinks they should do. And if he says
or if you, whether it's himself or you, ask him

(19:15):
the question about Lavard, if he's like, look, I have
no problem with Lionzo, but I can't put up with
this mess, then you just you trade him there so
you could wait if you want. But um, basically I'm
saying they they need to begin considering moving lines o Ball. Okay,

(19:37):
let's get to the Lakers and Isaiah Thomas. I heard
uh you, um, you know that Isaiah Thomas. It's one
thing to not enjoy your experience playing for the Calves,
but it was more than that. How does I t
feel like it went down with with Lebron James? Well,
I was told, you know, and his agent. We've been
checking his agents saying he doesn't know who said that,

(19:59):
but I was told by someone close Isaia that Isaiah
just didn't have any love loss for Lebron and that
he felt like, you know, Lebron kind of talked down
to him. Now, whether or not Lebron did that or not,
I don't know. But if you're Isaiah and you feel
like you're a twenty nine point score, you are on

(20:21):
Lebron's level, even if you acknowledge you're not quite as good,
which who knows what, Isaiah, but you think you're kind
of on that level. Who knows where he could perceive
is being talked down to? But I'm told that it did,
it didn't end well, and that he really doesn't have
much love for Lebron or really obviously, uh, the whole

(20:41):
situation and people associated with Cleveland, Yeah, it's it's gonna
be fascinating to see though, how that is, how that's
received by the league. Right, is this just an Isaiah
Thomas didn't get along with him, or is this Lebron
James is not necessarily as easy as we want to believe. Like, now, look,
he's Lebron is doing backflips over his new teammates, but

(21:04):
he's done backflips over any new teammates. I just wonder
because I think the thought is he comes to l
A and everyone's gonna flock to l A. But they
had this before with Kobe Bryant, where they couldn't get
anybody to sign with the Lakers to play with play
with Kobe. What is the perception of of playing with
Lebron at this stage in Lebron's career from the rest
of the league. Well, look, people know that Lebron is

(21:27):
high maintenance and he is incredibly demanding of everybody of
the franchise, of the coaching staff, of his teammates. Now
to his as he said, he also holds himself to
that standard because he keeps himself in incredible shape. But yeah,
it's tough because you know he's gonna hold you to

(21:50):
a certain standard. And you know that again, Lebron is
a system unto himself, and so he's like Kyrie didn't
like standing in the corner and waiting for Lebron to
create a shot for him, you know. And so there
are Chris Bosh obviously one championships with Lebron is a

(22:10):
group great friend of Lebron's. But he even acknowledged, Hey,
it's different. You better get used to it, Kevin Love,
you know. So, so that's not a secret. I mean
you know that, like guys know, it's not necessarily easy
to play with Lebron, but it's different than Kobe Bryant,
and that Kobe was a flat out scorer, and it

(22:33):
might have when Kobe does his thing, you might not
see the ball. With Lebron, You're going to see the ball.
You're going to get open looks, and you are going
to be a contender. Now, whether you get to the
championship or or when it is a different story, but
you're going to be a contender. You're going to get

(22:54):
to play at the on the big stage in the playoffs,
and you're going to get a chance to shine offensively.
You won't be the number one guy, you might not
have the ball, you won't have the ball as much
as you may be used to, but you will get
your shots. And that's the difference. So Yeah, some guys
might not want to do it, but other guys would

(23:17):
precisely because I can still shine with Lebron. I'm gonna
get my shots, i can score my point and I'm
gonna be on the biggest stage, maybe bigger stage, and
I've been on throughout my career, so um, yeah, I
don't think it'll be a deterrent to most players. That's
the voice of Chris Bruce. Sorry. You can hear on
weekends on Fox Sports Radio. Check them out tomorrow throughout

go through shoot around this morning. Milwaukee will be hosting
the worst team in the East, Atlanta, which is eighteen
and thirty nine. Milwaukee's G League team has claimed Brandon
jennings Off Waivers Toronto hosting Miami tonight to get things
started at seventies stern time. The Raptors have won five
games in a row. They're a half game ahead of

(25:03):
IDOL Boston for the top seed in the East. Meanwhile,
the Rockets are at Minnesota. Houston's won eighth straight. Houston
is one game behind IDLE Golden State for the best
overall record. By the way, the late game, Denver hosting
San Antonio and Jamal Murray at the Nuggets sixteen points
per game is questionable. He misshoot around with a chest injury.
The Hall of Fame Game in the NFL this August

(25:24):

Urlocker Baltimore will be baking its first appearance in this exhibition.
Mike Shula will be the Giant's new offensive coordinator and
reportedly quarterbacks coach according to NFL Network, Peyton Manning will
drive the pace car at Daytona this Sunday. The Daytona

(25:45):

I'm not sure I want to drive the pace car.
You don't gonna go fell want to have a race car.
I want to go fast. Took my son to k
one Speed. Oh. He loves he loves that place, loves
that place. Only thing colder than winner is the thought
of being stranded in it. That's why Auto Zone offers

(26:06):
free battery testing and a wide selection have proven tougher
a last batteries, so you can start your car with confidence.
Get in the zone auto zone. All right, I figured
out the phone number. Okay, it's eight seven seventy nine
nine Fox. But the phone numbers eight seven seven six
three six nine. Let's let you express yourself. Time to

(26:27):
express yourself called Doug eight seven seven six three six nine.
All right. We'll do this social media wise as well,
because I put out the question, um, workplace, how do
you tell how do you tell a colleague they got
bad breath without ruining your relationship with said colleague. It's

(26:47):
it's a very tough thing to do. It's a very
tough thing to do. My musical man, the Twitter Machine,
Chris and Tulsa, you're on the Doug Got Lip Show.
Feel free to express yourself? Are you know? Take my call.
You're welcome. I would just tell them, but it's happening

(27:13):
to help. Yeah, I just you can't just tell people
you've got you got bad breath. You have to you
have to. You have to massage it there, You really
really have to. Kind of there's gotta be. There's gotta
be because what you do, what you don't want. Even
if you've solved the bad breath problem, then you ruin
the friendship and workplace problem, and that's not a that's
not a meanable solution. Let's go to Ryan Music, who's

(27:35):
been manning the Twitter machine. Music, What do you got
as far as as far as tweets are concerned. Okay,
so first we will start off with a former coworker
of yours, Ali La Force with CBS. She tweeted and
she said, you have to hand them a mint or
gum and if they say, what does my breath smell?
You just smile and they will understand. Now here's the problem.

(27:55):
I think that only works if you are a blondhaired
woman who works in TV. You just can't give them
the smile and think that everything's cool. Well, look here,
here is honestly what it comes from. There's two people
that I worked with that I really like both of them,
and it was in more of a group I'm just
gonna give a it's a little bit more of a

(28:16):
group setting environment. And I was having a good laugh
with a couple of my former colleagues over these guys
have have have we solved that problem yet? And Everyone's like, no,
it's still it's still a problem. We still love the guy,
but it's still a problem. And so the question this
is not a hey you have bad breath. You ate
something garlically last night. One off could happen to anyone.

(28:40):
This is and you know this from having talked with me.
When when when you talk into a microphone for three
hours straight, you're if you're not constantly drinking water, you
get really bad breath. That happens. So if you work
and if every time you work with somebody they have halitosis,
you can't you can't tell him, hey, you have bad breath,
because it's an attack on their hygiene, even if it's

(29:02):
not really an attack in their hygiene. I mean, it's
a little bit of attack in their hygiene. But sometimes
they can be more about the fact that they talked
for two three hours on you know, in a run,
and that's what leads them to have bad breath. Well,
they can't go ahead. There's also the the coffee element
is something that I know I constantly struggle with, is

(29:23):
the several cups of coffee in you're now going, oh,
I can already tell that this is gonna be an
issue in about ten minutes. So coffee. Here's what coffee is.
Coffee is to breath what the shower is to flatulence.
It is or to body odor. Right, you ever have
body odor? And I'm talking before you start to apply

(29:44):
the soap, and you're like, man, if I just get
in the shower, it all start, it'll start smelling better.
But what happens is you're getting a hot shower and
you've got b o That shower just stinks. It just
worse you. If you you are you're out drinking one
night and the next wanting. You get up and you
shower and you thought you smell a little bit like booze,
That shower smells like a bar until you write the

(30:08):
coffee does the exact same thing. I don't think coffee
gives you bad breath. Coffee gives you coffee breath. But
if you have bad breath and you mix it with coffee,
oh my gosh, is it bad. By the way, I'm
gonna take a sip of coffee. We have more calls
and more tweets. We got some more tweets here. Um,
so now we have a couple of other people who
are going a slightly different route than Ali LaForce. She said,

(30:29):
you just give him a piece of gum and smile,
and that's how everything is supposed to work. We agree.
That doesn't work if you are not a pretty looking woman.
Um Drew Wrap tweets in he says, take out a
piece of gum for yourself, eat that first, then offer
it to them so that they but most people with
bad breath don't take hints where you get absolutely do

(30:51):
that right, you put in a piece of gum. We
go want something. I'm not saying anything, but you want something, right,
That's that's that's a solid first move. I just want
to establish that there's some sort of sign some sort
of signal, some sort of wink, you know, like or
like a Batman's like Batman signal only goes up when
Gotham's in trouble, right, I want some sort of signal
that we can all, we can all give to our fellow,

(31:12):
our friend that states, well, hey, I love you, you
just have really really bad breath. We have an answer.
We have an answer for you. Doug Ronny Moore tweets
in the show. He says, you pull him aside and
give him a friendly Hey, just a heads up, reel.
Real friends always appreciate you letting them know. Similar to
the Booger factor, it's a good call. You got a

(31:34):
bug hanging but you know you got a boog hanging
you just you just do the little little thing, the
little thing. But see when you do the boog hanging thing.
For whatever reason's boog haging can happen to anybody. The
difference in the bad breath thing is there are there's
a percentage of people, and I think a high percentage
of people that would think that's an attack on their hygiene.
And no one wants to be called dirty, right, No

(31:56):
one wants to be told that they don't brush their
teeth enough when we know that some times. And stuff
going on your stomach sometimes, the stuff going on your
your gums sometimes, and stuff going on um uh in
in your throat sometimes it's medicine you're taking. Sometimes it's
what you've eaten. Like, all of these things can affect you.
How long you're talking can affect your breath. But what

(32:17):
if it's something because I feel as though it could
be all of those factors, But then it's also easily
explained by like, oh, yeah, sorry, I had those garlic
fries at lunch. So someone wants to be made of
aware of the fact that it's it's coming back to
get you now. I think I think you have to
go with the friendly reminder and you you end up

(32:39):
covering your base there. Yeah, I have not yet done
that yet, so I can't. I can't tell you if
that works. If that's a good idea, that's a smart idea, alright,
eight seven, seven, nine nine on Fox. If you have
a solution for said problem, we will get to those
later on in the show. Take some more, uh, take
some more of your calls as well on this on

(32:59):
this very very sensitive and very pertinent topic. As I
sit alone in the studio today, so if there's bad breath,
it's just me. Now is a fantastic time to buy

(34:08):
Gottlieb Show. Steve this singer, Steve what he got for me?
Good afternoon to you formally and John Ramos what game today?
Rank them? I will give you a list, ask you
to rank. That would be following the conversation. But no,
that's not what I'm saying. By the way, we will
in a moment be talking about NBA All Star weekend.

(34:29):
Apparently Lonzo Ball is not gonna be in the Rising
Stars game because the Lakers just said that a. Lonzo's
out until after the All Star break with his knee problem,
although he did practice today. We'll start with college football
because FBS games, it was announced this week, average its
lowest attendance since two thousand per That includes all the
conferences in FBS it's the largest per game attendance drop

(34:52):
in thirty four years, down an average of one thousand,
four hundred fans per game. Rank The best sport to
watch in person? Is it? Of these? Five? College football,
college basketball, NFL football, MLB or NBA best sport to
watch in person? Regular season? Correct? You're gonna say college basketball.

(35:17):
I I don't think I'm going to. Here's the only
thing that keeps college football from being number one. Too
many replays, just it it too many replays and the
games are really really long, they are, and halftimes very long.
So I would say I would say college football one,
college basketball too. And but the problem with the NBA

(35:38):
and is like the NBA players are just so much better,
but you can catch a game that just is nothing.
But there's plenty of nothing college basketball games as well. Gosh,
that's hard. Um, So you're saying college football one, college
basketball too to watch in person? Yes, no, college football one,

(35:59):
NBA basketball too, Um, college basketball three, NFL for again,
the number of reviews in the NFL it's a TV sport,
and MLB five now MLB though, it's it's all based
upon what you're going to. What do you want to
get out of it, because best is the best. The best.

(36:19):
You go to the NBA baseball if you're gonna think
your your kids and you're gonna be able to talk
or your friend you can be able to catch up
and talk and you're not. But regular season baseball, I
would put his fifth rank. Now your favorite all star
event in the four major pro sports? NBA All Star
weekend coming up? Or would you say NFL, Pro Bowl, MLB,

(36:41):
NHL best all star event in pro sports? I hate
all star games in general, but I'd say Major League
Baseball's All Star Games one, NBA All Star Games two,
NHL three, and Pro Bowl four, because the Pro Bowl
is not a real football game, correct, And and they
don't doesn't know. Baseball has the home run derby, Basketball
has Slam, dunk Contest, three point shootout, other stuff to

(37:04):
talk about football. Just they have all these events that
I don't care anything about, which brings us to this
weekend in l A rank the best events during NBA's
All Star weekend. Is it the game itself? Or is
it the Dunk Contest, three point shootout, Skills Challenge, or
the Friday Rising Stars Game. I would say in order,
dunk contest one three point shooting contest to All Star

(37:25):
Game three Rising Stars Game four Skills Challenge just made
up that sets five. Well, most of the stuff on
the All Star Saturday Night is made up in a sense, right,
All Star Game. You're saying the game itself on Sunday
Night is only third best event of NBA All Star Weekend.
And I'm being nice for that ranking because I hate

(37:46):
All Star Games. And finally, at the Winter Olympics, rank
your favorite sports out of these five. Now, opening ceremony
by Athalon. I don't know why there's no by Athalon.
Yeah there is no. Yeah, yeah, the skiing and the shooting,
the old Erry Seinfeld lines like the beginning of a
James Bond movie. Opening ceremony is listed as one of
the five. Or is your favorite event at the Winter

(38:07):
Games snowboarding, hockey, speed skating or curling. Um, I'm I'm
like everybody else. I'm fastinating by the curling thing, But
I would say speed skating is probably my number one.
I love the racing, the actual short track speed skating. Yeah,
I mean, they're unbelievable there, and they're they're unbelievable. If
you've ever ski skate if you're you're ice skated before

(38:29):
and then you watch how fast they go, You're like,
that's ridiculous. Speed skating one, curling too, um snowboarding. Three,
hock the hockey four opening ceremony. Five, This is game
time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox

(38:51):
Sports Radio. The only thing colder than winter is the
is the thought of being strained in it. That's why
AutoZone offers free battery testing in a wide selection of
proven through dural batteries. Excuse me, a wide selection have
proven tough during last batteries, so you can start your
car with confidence getting the zone auto zone. God, I
can't read it all today, ramos, I am terrible. I made,

(39:15):
I made, I made the word tough into through. What
the hell is the matter with me? You can't people
auto zone like, oh what are you doing? Godlieve you're awful.
So college football's attendance is down and we're supposed to
be surprised by it. I guess my question is why
hasn't this happened sooner? This is going to be a
problem in sports already a problem in college basketball problem.

(39:36):
Now in college football. It's going to be a problem
in the National Football League if it isn't already. Every
game being on TV is not a good thing for attendance.
You keep building, the stadium is bigger and better and
more expensive than ever. There's more things to do, more
ways in which you can watch, and I don't want
to go to one sporting event. There's a uniqueness to

(40:00):
way Thursday night game that I might go to to
a Monday night game that I might go to, big
tennis Friday night games that I might go to, So
maybe that will help, But then again, I gotta go
on a Friday night as opposed to Saturday games. Look,
I don't know how people go to Saturday college football
games where they have families. You got little kids, right,
little kids have soccer in the morning or flag football

(40:20):
or like you just want to watch the rest of
the games. So I'm not freaking out over the news
because I'm I think I'm more surprised that this hadn't
happened already. How does not happen already? And now it
starts one average of one thousand people down and these

(40:42):
are with huge stadiums, so the percentage isn't big. But
once you start dropping into tenants. It becomes a story.
It's much like the NFL ratings. You can tell me
NFL ratings dropping isn't a problem, but do you remember
them dropping this precipitously before? Becomes a story. Now becomes

(41:02):
cool to not go to games. I don't understand why
people to go to games to begin with. TV has
made it so great to just sit in your couch,
flip around multiple TVs, watch every game, get all the replays,
be able to get up, go to the bathroom, not
spend ten bucks in a beer. Steve Kurt did something
really unique last night. Was it disrespectful? I'll tell you

(41:23):
next in the Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. What
Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio Today, Coming to
you from the brisk, slightly chilly, but generally sunny city
of New York. Huh, good about it? Good about it?
Last night, Steve Kerry did something um that people are

(41:46):
reacting to. They're freaking out about, and I guess it's
new if you haven't been paying attention. There's all different
ways to coach a team. I didn't like that Brady
Hope didn't wear a headset when he was coaching Michigan,
and ultimately when he wasn't winning enough games, they fired
Brady Hoke, and they pointed out that he wasn't wearing

(42:08):
a headset. There's a million different ways to coach football.
There are head coaches. Frank Raich, as you may have heard,
is going to be the head coach of the Indianapolis
Content is going to call plays. Some guys call plays,
some guys don't. Some guys are defensive guys and they
don't mess with the offense. Some guys are CEOs and

(42:30):
they don't mess with either side and they just manage.
That's just in football. Basketball is much the same. Some
guys micromanage. Some guys have an offensive coordinat or defensive
coordinator and they coordinate. Whereas the Golden State Warriors, I
know people think they're on autopilot. Luke Walton came in

(42:51):
one a ton of games. Steve Kerr's the fastest to
win two D fifty games. But there is coaching that
takes place there which goes counter to what you thought
you saw or what you may believe. You heard Steve
Kur say after they blew out the Phoenix Suns, and
he didn't coach in huddles here Steve Kerr in his
own words, explaining his decision. As coaches, our job is

(43:12):
to nudge them in the right direction, guide them, um,
but we don't control them. I don't feel like we
focused well at all the last months, and it just
seemed like the right thing to do. And I thought
they communicated really well, drew up some nice plays and
it was a good night. I told j afterwards. I
said that, you know, people may make a big deal
of it, and uh had nothing to do with with

(43:33):
being disrespectful and had to do with me trying to
reach my team. I have not reached them for the
last month. Uh, they're tired of my voice. I'm tired
of my voice. Jared Dudley said this DESPN. Jared Dudley
obviously the Phoenix Sun said this. It shows a lack
of respect for an opponent, and maybe right now we
don't deserve respect. When you keep getting beat by forty

(43:53):
teams won't respect you. But it's up to us to
change that, I responded, and I'll do so again here
on radio. I don't think this has anything at all
to do with the Phoenix Suns. Nothing. It's just a
coaching technique, it's just a coach, it's a leadership technique

(44:15):
as well, you know. And if you've watched the Golden
State Warriors, Steve Kerr was struggling to connect with them.
It's this is there's a million different ways to try
and connect with players or trying to get players to
connect with each other, you know, in college, so oftentimes

(44:36):
what coaches do is they turn you against them. The
coaching staff can be so brutal, so negative that you
end up hating the coaching staff. But you know what
it does psychology. He gets the guys united. Yeah, they
may be united in their dislike for the head coaches,
but that's okay. A united team, even if united in

(44:58):
their dislike for the head coach, is still a united team.
In this particular case, Kurt knows ultimately it's his team,
and it's one of those things to where it's it's
it's like Magic Johnson constantly says Kobe is the greatest
Laker ever. Now, do you really think, in your heart
of hearts, in his heart of hearts, Magic Johnson thinks

(45:20):
Kobe Bryant is the greatest Laker ever. No, but you
keep saying it keeps saying it, keeps saying it, and
people grow even more respectful of you. Like man, that
is really self deprecating to put somebody else ahead of
Magic Johnson. It's not personal, it's strictly business. That's all
Steve Kerr's doing. Steve, like, listen, this is coaching. But

(45:41):
coaching is just more about pushing them in a direction,
pushing them here, guiding them. Remember who Steve Kerr played for.
He played for lud Olsen, who wasn't a heavy handed coach.
He played for Greg Popovitch but for a lot of people,
but he played for Greg Popovich and one championships. And

(46:03):
he played for Phil Jackson won championships. And both can
be caustic, can be sarcastic, but both have kind of
New Age philosophies into using the mind, using the psychology
of men to work for the team, not against the team.
That's all he did. And so what happens is when

(46:26):
you're on the other side of a psychological movie, you're like, well,
he would never change this trade this if it was
the spurs, or if it was the thunder, or if
this was a reaction then getting blown out by the thunder.
So yeah, he tried against the Sons, and yet it
only empowers the guys more. But I think this is
the nameless, faceless opponent. Let's just adjust to us. Let's

(46:49):
find a way to where I get tired of saying
the exact same things in huddles, to where it becomes cliche.
Let somebody else do it. Gave music what you got.
But this is clearly only something that the Warriors are
in a position to do because they have so much talent,
because they are for the most part. So I don't

(47:10):
think the Calves were doing this even when they weren't winning.
Lebron was taking over huddles. You know, this is something
that Popovich has done to his team. He's led, He's
led Monta genobl do this. So I I don't I
don't think that at all. I honestly don't agree with that. Okay,
I mean I feel like, obviously, when you say that
about Lebron, Lebron's usually the exception, and this was that's

(47:33):
sort of like Lebron takes over. I see it as
Lebron takes over for the teams, because he would when
when David Blatt drew up that play at the end
of the game, he scrapped it. He called his own
play there um with other teams, obviously, you need to
have certain veterans in place. Note order for this to
take place, like the seventies sixers aren't gonna be doing this,

(47:54):
Like teams with young players trying to develop aren't in
the same situation as the Warriors are. Correct. But I mean,
like if he gave it to J. J. Reddick and
you said, let J. J. Reddick cauntle huddles tonight with
eight two games in the season, sporing, break it up,
change the voices, change what you're gonna do. But more

(48:16):
than anything, they had hit a stagnant spot. And now
instead of talking about the bench, instead of talking about Igwadal,
who did play a better last night and they started
him when or not he's washed. Instead of talking about
anything else, we're talking about this. It's brilliant. It's brilliant,
And now it doesn't You're right, it doesn't work for
every team, every work environment. The boss can't come in

(48:38):
and say, you guys figured out you guys, you guys
pick what our next project is. You guys pick what
our what our budget is. But it is empowering, you know,
that's that's the that's what you want a great boss
to do. A great boss should should guide their employees,
should give them the basic rules and basic structure, and
then allow them to flourish and allow their creativity to flourish.

(49:03):
I mean all honesty. That's I have my boss at
Fox Sports Radio I consider a coach. He gives me advice.
I take it, but he doesn't sit at another meeting.
He doesn't tell me what to talk about. So I
think we act like this is some breakthrough thing that
we've never seen before, when it's happened plenty other times. Obviously,

(49:25):
there's the famous and it's not it's not the same
as taking the whiteboard. But there's the famous Steve Kerr
playing with Michael Jordan's in the NBA Finals and Steve Kerr,
Mike Upp says to Michael Jordan's when they come here,
will come to double, I'll be ready and I'll make
it now. Is that drawing up a play? No? Is
that making substitutions know? But is that a huddle in

(49:45):
a big moment and two guys communicating to each other? Absolutely?
And you only get that if you break down the
if you know, if you break away from we do that.
We do browling branch reads right, and I have that
bowling branch read that I do. When we talk about
cutting out the middlemen, this is cutting out the middleman.

(50:06):
I don't need players today. One of the issues that
that coaches in basketball have, maybe as much as any
is basketball, is such there's five guys you have to
be working together and communicate, and kids struggle to communicate.
They just do. Now, these aren't kids, these are grown men.
But the next generation, the younger generation, the college generation.

(50:26):
Now they've grown up with cell phones in their hands.
They will text each other at nauseam, but looking at
each other in the eye and actually talking to each
other doesn't happen. This allows to happen. There's a better

think this is kind of the perfect guest to have
on today because he's somebody who uh, he's somebody who
has lived in so many different NBA circles. Matt Barnes
will joined us momentarily. I saw this note from Lebron James,
who has said Trey Young better go pro after this season. Now, look,

(52:31):
Lebron said, what decision. That ain't no decision. That's like
my waking up this morning. That ain't no decision brushing
my teeth. That ain't no decision. He better go pro.
Trey Young's averaging twenty nine and a half, nine and
a half and four rebounds of game, shooting ridiculous from
the floor, thirty eight percent from three point land. I've

(52:55):
probably seen Trey Young before you've seen him play. I've
seen Young playball. Trey Young playball since he was in
the eighth grade. He's been a part of my camp
last few years. He went up before he went off
to Oklahoma, so I know what he's all about, and
what he's doing now is very special. Very special player
can add a lot to any team if you decide
to come out in the draft. There's another article earlier's day.

(53:18):
Kevin Pelton, I believe wrote it in that he's the
first of the Steph Curry clones. I've talked to NBA
people who are not nearly as sold, nearly as sold
as some pundits are, or some fans are, or Lebron

(53:39):
James is. If you look at those numbers, the volume
of touches, the volume of possessions, He's a high turnover
guy playing against non NBA athletes. He is not a
great athlete. He is a great shooter, he is a
great ball handler, but can he get a step It's

(54:01):
many of the same questions we had about Steph Curry,
and Steph has proved so many of the skeptics wrong.
The differences. He appears to be slightly less athletic, He's smaller,
not as strong, albeit younger than when Steph Curry came out.
So I don't think that Lebron what Lebron is saying

(54:21):
is groundbreaking or earth shattering. I do think it's interesting
considering his ties to Rich Paul's agency, his ties to
the Nike camp, But because he has a pre existing
relationship going back several years, um, I'm sure he'll be
able to get away with it. It just won't sit

(54:42):
terribly well with everybody just won't when I think also
is fascinating is Lebron James taking kind of credit here
and a lot of guys will oh. I saw Trey
Trey Young play at camp last time I camp last summer.
He was bad at that camp. The last couple of years.
He was just not that good. He was dominant in

(55:03):
high school. He is a special, special talent in terms
of his shooting and some of the ball handling stuff.
Just a big question is, look, who in the NBA
is he going to guard? Well, that's not important really, Okay,
ask guys Aiah Thomas about how important it is to

(55:24):
not be able to guard somebody dying on ball screens.
You have to completely remake how you're gonna play defensively,
completely remake how you're gonna play offensively. And the other part,
and this is maybe the most important important part, is
let's say he finds a team like Orlando. Hey, we're
gonna play this way around him. If it doesn't work,
guys don't want to go down the court and stand

(55:45):
in the corner and wait for a six ft one
rookie to go one on one and jack up, you know,
Steph Curry type of threes if he's not making them
at the same percentage and not as effective as Steff
has been. And even then sometimes it's hard to get
those guys to play with him. So I think it's
gonna be really interesting. But I don't think what Lebron

(56:06):
saying is earth shattering, you know. I think what he's
saying is what most people say, which is, you know,
if look, if you do enough, you do enough in college,
you should go. Otherwise you run the risk of becoming
Grayson Allen. Right, remember Grace Allen, who was famous for

(56:27):
being the you know off the bench. Hadn't heard of
him player winning Duke and national championship three years ago,
then the last two years, will he come out? Will
he not? He's got to grow up because he's tripping
people and he's overreacting. Now he hasn't tripped anybody. He's
actually a better player now than he used to be.
But because he's surrounded by young talent, it's like everybody's

(56:48):
forgotten about Grayson Allen. He stayed too long. The college
basketball analogy is just like the how long you stay
at a party music? How long did you stay at
that first party? Chris at Thompson's party at the Super Bowl.
I was there probably about an hour at the most

(57:13):
I was there, I would say twenty minutes I thought
I left. I was just really, really tired. And that's
really what it all came down to. I was really
I was super tired, and I was like, yeah. And
here's the other thing about going to those parties. I
knew I was going to a party that the following night.
And one of the things when you host a radio
show is you can't go to all the parties end

(57:35):
up being the same. Right, Like, people are freaking out
because like oh L, a All Star game, so many
big parties. The hardest part about parties at Super Bowls
and Final Fours and NBA All Star Games, it's a
lot like Stanford. The hardest part about it is getting
into the party. The hardest part about Stanford is getting
admitted to Stanford. After that, nobody flunks out. But what

(57:57):
you have to be cautious of is you don't want
to lose your voice, even if you're talking at your
what you think is your regular level, because there's so
much other noise around you, so many other people talking.
Plus you're having a couple of drinks. You stand at
a party for an hour and a half, two hours,
you will lose your voice the next day. So I
was the one and done. I was gone. I checked

(58:18):
my coat and then I was like, why did I
checked my coat? I'm cold? Put back on my coat
and I was like, mmmmm, I'll just duck out of
here when nobody's looking. Music. Stayed for about the right
amount of time. Now, on the other hand, but I
even I even felt that I was there too long. Personally, Yeah, yeah,
did you see me leave? I hadn't actually had no
idea because when I went to leave, I was like,

(58:39):
where's Dougs. I was just gonna be like, hey, man,
I'm out. I'll see you tomorrow morning. Whatever. I couldn't
find you. So I was like, he's an adult and
he'll be fine. So I just took off. Yep. I
was already back in my room, snuggled up some snug
snug like a bug in a rug. That's exactly what
I was doing. I was feeling great. And that's one
of those decisions that anytime I leave a party early

(58:59):
or earlier than I'm supposed to, I actually feel really
good about the decision, very good. About the decision. Oklahoma
takes on Texas Tech and I got game. The Trey
Young game takes on extra meaning. Here's why his dad
rayed for Young, played for Texas Tech, he visited Texas Tech,
and then when he signed at Oklahoma, he said, no
disrespect to Texas Tech. I just want to play with

(59:21):
better players. Of course, Texas Tech is now in first
place in the Big Twelve. Oklahoma has lost five of
the last six, and he returns to Lubbock for probably
the only time in his college basketball career the same
team he thought didn't have good enough players, and the
truth is, like he's a better fit at Oklahoma. They
weren't going to play the style of basketball if he
went to Texas Tech. This this has gone absolutely perfectly

(59:45):
for Trey Young, but it feels like a night in
which he eats his words, isn't it. We don't have
good enough players and yet our guys are in first place.
For the college basketball landscape as a whole, is this
one of those years where the teams with the most
talent will end up being in the tournament late? Or

(01:00:05):
is this one of those years where we expect to
sort of see one of the what you call like
the Cinderella teams to go further because the depth I
know you talked about this a lot this year. The
depth of players just isn't there at those top programs anymore.
I think it just depends on the team. But yeah,
we're we're running the risk of a bunch of programs
that you know, if you have a Xavier, Cincinnati, a

(01:00:28):
Texas tech Um and Auburn a Clemson in the final four, Like,
that's not great for the sport. It's just not you
can tell me it is like, oh, I love the
Cinderella Like. Now you want Michigan State there, you want
Nova there, you want a Duke there, you want to
Kansas there, you want an Arizona there. You want some
of the big boys there. And then maybe one other team,

(01:00:51):
one other team. None of these are the biggest games
of the night. The biggest game of the night is
in the NBA. We don't know if Russ Westbrook or
if Carmelo Anthony are gonna play. I mean, part of
me says, boy, you'd really love for them to play,
because you want to see this new look Calves team
against a full Oklahoma City roster. On the other hand,

(01:01:12):
furr Oklahoma City, Like, what's really the win? Right? You
got the All Star Game coming up. Sit those guys down,
get them some extra time off, especially because Russell Westbrook's
gonna have to play this weekend. Online car shopping can

we're gonna do. We're gonna go to Steve to Sega
a little bit early. Then I heard Matt Barnes is
getting ready to join us. We'll get his take on LaVar,
his take on the new look Cavaliers, his take on

(01:01:57):
um on Isaiah Thomas, and how that ultimately plays out
in l A. Get to that after we get to
steave A Segre and find out what's going on the
world sports. Steve at the Winner Olympics in South Korea,
US women's hockey shut out the Russians five nothing, joscel
and lamar O. Davidson of the US scored two goals
in a record six seconds. The US men's hockey team
plays its opener tomorrow, with no NHL stars in the

(01:02:19):
Olympics this time. Late tonight, the unified Korean women's team
faces winless Japan. Korea has been outscored sixteen nothing so
far in its two hockey games. In skiing, the women
slalomist Tonight, also pairs figure skating begins, and there's the
final of men's half pipe snowboarding. Norway leads the medal
count right now with eleven ten for both Canada and
the Netherlands. The US has six medals, including three goals

(01:02:41):
in snowboarding. Jason Lee will resign with the Dodgers. Clayton
Kershaw will be the Dodgers opening day starter for a
team record eighth time. The Cubs introduced new picture you
Darvish pictures, and catchers started reporting to spring training. Major
League exhibitions began February. Mike Shula will be the Giants
new offensive coordinate. The new head coach, Pat Shermer is
expected to call the plays. The Chiefs A linebacker Derek

(01:03:04):
Johnson will become a free agent when his contract expires
next month. The Ravens and Bears will play in the
Hall of Fame game in August. Back to you, thanks
Steve as conditioning on the field change. So can your

can assess with your policies. Game ready. Find an agent
at Farmers dot com. We are farmers, all right. He's

(01:03:25):
a former well, he's a farmer just about everywhere. He's
Matt Barnes. He joins US an NBA champion. Doug Gottlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Let's start with, uh, last night, what
Steve curR decided to do? He said he struggled to
connect with his team. They've been all over the map,
They've gotten blown out a couple of times, played better
the past couple of games, and obviously last night was
a get right game against just a terrible Phoenix Suns club.

(01:03:49):
But what's your reaction to him letting his players coach
the huddles. I love it. I think it's great. Uh.
Steve is one of those guys that it's looking you know,
he obviously always has it, you know, a great game
planel on this coaching staff. But he also allows me
to create within that, you know, so he has the
trusted Raymond that Katie Andre, Sean living and David West
that has funny of provement events, you know what I mean.

(01:04:11):
So sometimes I mean, obviously it's a new tactics and
when when I heard about it and thought I loved
it because that Andre is a great basketball mind. Um.
But I just think with this Warrior team right now,
it's it's it's not bored with the process, but it's
worth with the process at the same time, you know
what I mean, Like they know what they have and
know what they're capable of. Um. And these are the
dog days of the season, you know, uh, a month
before January February and then All Star Breaker the toughest

(01:04:33):
time to stay focused as a pro. So you know
they need to all start break to refresh and then
you'll see what they're about in March April. I guess
my only question about the Warriors is DeAndrea Aguadallas is
the Sean Livingston's the bench guys you've been able to
count on for the last three years, at some point
father time comes up and gets them. And Iguodala's production
has been way down this year. Do you think they

(01:04:55):
have the bench to have that same production in the playoffs.
I think this they're using Andre Smart They know right
now doesn't matter, you know what I mean, whether his
minutes downs, productions down. They know what they have in him.
It's proven, um, you know, so they know that they
can rest him. They know that the most important thing
is being healthy in March and April, not healthy in January, February. Um,

(01:05:17):
you know what they're along with Nick Young. You know,
I've had to keep a few conversations with Nick Young,
you know, telling them that, you know, keep your head
in it. You know, coach knows that he has in you,
and he's gonna need you down the stretch. You know.
Don't worry about MP's and stuff right now. So they
definitely have what it takes. They're are getting older, but
they still have one to say. Matt Barnes joining us
on the Doug Gotlip Show. LaVar Ball's talking to a

(01:05:37):
Lithuania reporters, like, look, if the Lakers don't take Jello
Ball in this year's draft, then you know, he said
three years. Obviously, anybody who knows NBA contracts knows that
rookie deal for first round picks four years, but that
Alonzo won't re sign with the Lakers. If you were
the Lakers, how would you take this? I mean, it's

(01:05:58):
just amazing that it's like we're even having this conversation.
You know, if this guy is is a mad genius
and equal genius, and I'm not mad at I understand it. Um.
You know, I hope that you know there's some rhyme
and reason and really when you find the true meaning,
because you know Lonzo's I feel like he's gonna be
a star in the NBA. Um once you get the
speed under them and be able to leave this franchise

(01:06:19):
for many years, you know. I mean, so I hope
something like that with effect that's happened. Um. But like
I said, I laughed when I heard it. I'm not
bad at it. I understand. I guess I understand it.
But like I said, I hope you know, cooler heads
prevail when it actually comes down to Yeah, Like, if
you're the Lakers, do you do you pay any attention
to it? Do you tell you don't show it at all?

(01:06:39):
You know what I mean? You don't let someone's dad
dictate your franchise by any means. You know, when when
he was talking about Luke, I was, you know I was.
I shook my head because look at the good guy
and I know Luke as various Hellig played together. Um,
you know he under underfilled Jackson, under Steve Kerr. Luke
can definitely handle the job. They have to understand. You
don't give people time anymore, you know what I mean.
If you have a half to see in the book
yourself back in the day you had a few years.

(01:07:01):
You know, everyone wants everything now. So back to my point,
you don't let the father dictate your franchise, and I
know Magic won't let that happen. When when when the
trade was made, everybody, I think said, well, they got younger,
the Calves got more athletic, and obviously they played as
well as you can possibly play against the Celtics who
played as poor as they can possibly play in the

(01:07:21):
Sunday blowout. But when the dust settles, when when everybody
gets back to figuring stuff out, are the Calves actually
better as a team in the playoffs with this group
than they would have been with the veterans that they jettison.
There's no question, and this is no disrespect to the
people that traded away, you know, two ways the Hall
of Famer. You know they had to make business boves
for their franchise, but I love the moves they made.

(01:07:43):
They got younger and to meet. What they did is
they got fresh energy in there, you know. I mean
with a bunch of old guys. Sometimes you get them
placed in and you'd like to concern it on later.
With these young kids, they don't know better, so they're
they're always on the tin and you need that from
the Jordan Clarkson uh Larry's man um. I love Rode
good Um and then George Hill there is a side
of the staff and then he came up under deep pop.

(01:08:03):
So I love all the those they made to me.
I even though they went to struggles, I never overlooked
at me because they have the Lebron's factor. You know,
everyone was on Boston's band wagon, and Boston is very talented.
And what's le Bron's done. It's Boston's Eastern Conference. But
the Lebron is doing in the Eastern Conference. So um,
you know, to see what they did is refreshing. I'm
happy to le Brons, you know what I mean. Whether
he decided to stay after this or league. It's completely

(01:08:24):
up to him, And I'm four, you good decision. But
I love the moves they made before the trade that month. Okay,
what about when you get to the playoffs? So, as
you know, when you get to playoff basketball, it's just
a different level. And generally guys have to have been
through the playoffs in order to perform well in the playoffs.
You know, you have two maybe even three that haven't
really played at a high level in the playoffs. The

(01:08:45):
Lakers Dandum especially hadn't. They haven't ever sniffed the playoffs.
So how does in terms of being in the playoffs,
how does it affect that? Um? Well, I mean, and
that's the main reason. Like I said that, you hit
my point on the head. As you know, how can
you look at Boston's favorite, you know, because the only
person that's been there is Kyrie? You know. So with
Lebron you have Lebrauns. You have because you have j R. Spith,

(01:09:07):
you have Kyle Cornvers, you have Jeff Green, You have
enough bets. And then like I said, I don't know
if I mentioned Calf Lebraun, you know, and then Kevin
Love will be help Jeff Sistem Thompson. So they have
guys that have been there and done that. And although
if they added young new pieces, is enough older pieces
around them to really fall in line, you know what
I mean. I think Jordan Clarkson is ready to fall
on line. I think he's gonna be huged down the

(01:09:27):
stretch for them in the playoffs because to me, he's
one of the best coming off the bench scores in
the game, you know what I mean. So I look
for in a lot of him and like a thing
right into this. So I love all the moves they made.
I don't see hey weaknesses and their team. You know,
hopefully the kids shook it together. They can learn how
to work hard on defense, and it's gonna be a fun,
fun you know, it's gonna be a fun stretch run.
He said, fun finals. Do you think I got myself?

(01:09:49):
That's okay, You're allowed, dude like that. We're like, the
assumption is they play, Uh if they match up in
the finals, do you think they match up well with
the Warriors? I just love the parodies, you know what
I mean? I love because act that even though where
it's very top heavy right now, I love the blue
Houston is making you know, picking up Joe Johnson and
then someone to people don't even think about his Brandon Light,
who is a constant Chinn and Tin guy, Allie you catcher,

(01:10:11):
rim protector, rebounder. Joe Johnson is one of the best
bets in the game. I really love And they're having fun.
I talked to christ Paul at the time, and I'm
so happy that he looks like he's having fun. And
these guys are buying in and understanding what it takes.
So it's not gonna be a free walk. I still
the Warriors are still my team on kicking, but it's
not gonna be as easiest people think. Want to come
down the crush tie Matt Barnes uh NBA champion of course,

(01:10:33):
joining us here on Fox Sports Trading Matt, great stuff, dude,
love your perspective. Um, do I want to act to you?
Ask you before I let you go about your active
dreamer something that you do. I know this is a
full time business for you. It's not something that you
just do on the side. For people who haven't been
following it, what is it. It's I'm on a full
time houstle right now, Doug act dream is right now
is a blunky company that I came on board about

(01:10:54):
three years ago. Um, Steph Curry's involved on A good
friend of mine named Jack who played in the NBA
for a senters involved. And what we do is we
have the licensing to the NBA, so we have all
differ you know, all the players in the NBIA we
make blankets for Um. We're in the process. We have
the likeness, the likeness for the the NFL players. We
don't have this the teams, Jeff, but we're continuing to build.
We're in toss with the WWT now about getting professional wrestling.

(01:11:18):
So we're basically doing is trying to provide like that
set blankets, fellows, everything for kids, you know what I mean.
So you can have your favorite NBA, NFL, Major League player,
European soccer player, w W character and then you can
hope in getting too Disneys, you know, your favorite Disney
character on your on your blanket. And we really think
that don't pray able to accomplish that and get to
all those major brands, that it's gonna be a monster,

(01:11:41):
all right, So send me send that Steph Curry blanket
from my kid maybe and get his jump out. Yeah,
no question we got funy of those. I'm sure you do. Matt,
thanks so much for joining us and I appreciate it. Doug,
thanks for having me bro Hi. It's Matt Barnes, U
c l A dude, NBA dude, of course NBA champion
as well. Given us his perspective. Look, my my perspective
hasn't changed. I do think they got younger. I do

(01:12:03):
think they got more athletic. But I do think there's
a reason that Jordan Clarkston was available. One it's the contract.
And two you guys saw the best of Jordan Clarkston
against the Celtics, Like, man, how could anybody let him go?
Like you do know that there's gonna be some regression
towards the mean. And I still think that this CALVS

(01:12:25):
team remarkably is. It's similarly put together, although the different
kind of construction then earlier this year where you're gonna
try and do an ensemble cast. Now we're gonna be
better one through ten as opposed to you be better
one through five, which sounds great if the Warriors get
there and have an injury or the Rockets get there

(01:12:46):
and have an injury. But in the NBA generally it's
been about your best five guys and how they fit together.
And I don't I'm not sure people understand how clunky
it might be when they get Kevin love back, because
Kevin Lovely is going to play, which means somebody is
going to sit. Now you're like, well, says Ausman. Sits
like okay, But they become completely different defensively, maybe more

(01:13:12):
effective offensively, completely different defensively when you add in Kevin
love complete change. So I'm not as big a buyer,
although I do think that they're better in the East,
and they are the favorite in the East, and that's
why we can't take uh, we can't take the best
record in the East. Nobody thinks that. Nobody thinks the

talk with the Farmers at today so you can assess
whether you're a policy is game ready? Find an agent
at Farmers dot com. Are Farmers. William mc ginnis won
a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. He had

(01:16:04):
this to say on Undisputed in regards to Lane Johnson
talking about the Eagles having fun and the Patriots having
none of it. You know, I like Lane, I think
he's I think he's a really good player, and I'm
happy that they finally that they wanted Super Bowl because
they definitely deserved it. But Um, for him to come
out and say our culture it's a fear culture base
makes no sense. He's never been in that locker room

(01:16:25):
or never really shared that cult or understand. Um. I
was one of the guys who created that culture in
that locker room and amongst the players. There is a
certain amount of pressure that we created because we wanted
players to play and be accountable and be a certain way.
And a lot of times that locker room ran the
team and things didn't really get up to Belichick into
the coaching staff and all that. So, I mean, it's

(01:16:49):
a certain way. I think you gotta conduct yourself, and
you gotta handle your business, and you've gotta have a
certain work ethic, um. And they adhere to that and
they understand that there's a certain level that's expect if
you're a free agency or or free agent or you're
drafted and you go there, you gotta you gotta, you
gotta fall in line because the system in the machine
runs a certain way. And if you go in there

(01:17:10):
and you handle your business and your professional and you
do your work, you're gonna have a lot of fun.
Like we had a lot of fun while we were there.
You know, it's the most fun thing in the world
having more points than the other team when the buzzer
sounds right. That's That's basically what Willia mc ginnis is saying. Now, listen,
I understand that there's a you don't want to feel
like you're going to a cult, like you're just a

(01:17:30):
cog in the machine, that you can't have any sort
of personality. But I do think that the first part
that Willie said is accurate. Lane Johnson saying it's a
fear based culture when he's never played in that culture.
Is you know, anybody commenting about somebody else's workplace when
they've never worked there. I hear people say it all

(01:17:51):
the time about ESPN, where I used to work. Now,
I know it's changed some since I've been there, but
I was there for ten years. I was pretty well
aware of the culture that was there. How's the CBS
for five years. I'm pretty well aware of the culture
that was there. And anyone who hasn't been there shouldn't
really be telling me about the culture of either of
the two places. Nor should you tell me about the
culture of Fox or Fox Sports or Fox Sports Radio.

(01:18:17):
But the most interesting part is what everyone's missing on this.
He talked about how guys have to handle their business,
how the locker room police itself has. Yes, there is
a more discipline culture because they think that, and and
the players being accountable. There's a relationship, a correlation there
between what Steve Kerr did last night letting a team
coach itself, and what Bill Belichick did on Super Bowl

(01:18:40):
Sunday not playing Malcolm Butler, and what did people in
our position set. He's nuts, he costed himself a super Bowl.
He's an idiot. His ego has gone too far. What
is Bill Belichick doing? But what I told you after
that is what I'll tell you today. Bill Belichick may
have lost that battle in order to win the war.

(01:19:05):
May have lost that battle in order to win the war.
You can't win every argument. You just want to win
the ones that can that matter. And while you may
say studn Super Bowl doesn't matter, by Bill Belichick's from
his perspective, sitting Malcolm Butler down is maintaining complete and

(01:19:27):
total control. If you want to say that's fear based, fine, fine,
that's like saying that we have the death penalty in
this country so so that people are scared to commit murder. Now,
it doesn't necessarily work out that way. I think it's
a proper punishment for a proper crime. But if it's

(01:19:49):
a deterrent for future guys to step out of line
in the Super Bowl, then yeah, that's exactly. If that's
fear based, then fine. That's also setting up in order
of discipline and standing by it regardless of the game.
It's the hardest thing to do in sports, knowing you're
hurting the team, you're hurting yourself a chance of winning

(01:20:11):
a big game at the with the chance of doing
the right thing. And I don't believe that Bill Belichick
would possibly do that unless he knew that Malcolm Butler
had done something wrong and wrong enough for wrong enough
times to which he didn't deserve a shot to play,

(01:20:32):
even though other coaches would have relented. That's not who
he is, that's not how he rolls. And if that's
fear based it that's no fun. I understand it's not
for everybody. It's not for everybody, but it's one that's
gotten them to eight Super Bowls, and it's really really
hard to question. The only thing colder than winner is
the thought of being stranded in it. That's why AutoZone
offers free battery testing and a wide selection of proven,

(01:20:55):
tough dur Last batteries so you can start your car
with confidence, get in the zone, Auto Zone. That's what
the Fox said. Yeah, music, what's up? But so you
have Bill Belichick, Nick Saban, and Greg Popovich, three coaches
that are all sort of have that similar tone of

(01:21:17):
They're very terse and short and can be smuggish with
the media, but they've had great success and they're known
for being very detail oriented and running everything very through
a strict regiment. Out of those three, which one do
you think actually has the best personality behind the scenes. Oh,

(01:21:37):
I think it's Belichick. I think Popovich is a really
good personality. I think it's Belichick, though Pop's personality actually
comes out and there's some funny things. I think Belichick,
though there's any question in my mind, he's probably got
a really good personality behind the scenes. I don't think
he's nearly as straight laced as you would think Saban.
I think Saban's kind of a robot, very control rolling. Um.

(01:22:01):
I'm sure he has a good personality in recruiting, and
he is a good person but it's not as I
think funny and relatable to adults as I think Bill
Belichick probably is. Papovich is probably the best personality, um
outside of interviewing with the media, the best personality in
public as of now. I think Belichick is probably the
best behind closed doors. All Right, we're back in this

(01:22:24):
kind of the circle we can't get out of. What
do you do with LaVar Ball? You're the l a Lakers.
LaVar Ball's in Lithuania, teams playing battle without Alonso, playing
without LaVar being around, and LaVar is already talking about
the possibility of his son not re signing with the Lakers,
whom he hasn't complayed the first season with yet. What
do you do? I'll tell you next in the Dug

(01:22:45):
Outlip Show Fox Sports Radio. What Up, It's the Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the
sunny Crisp Clark's guys in New York City, New York City.
So funny. I went through um my aunt's constipation to

(01:23:07):
get here. You only understand that if you have children
and your children have to be a little bit older, Like, yeah,
your kids are like my kids made or ade eleven.
You understand that reference, Ramos, do you understand that reference
the my aunt's constipation? Probably not, because I thought you
meant it literally, so I don't. Obviously I don't. Oh no, no, no, Madagascar.

(01:23:28):
You've seen the movie Madagascar, noscar, I didn't. Kids saw it,
but I didn't. Madagascar is good, man, I'm sure. Yeah, No,
I just didn't that good. Anyway. Uh, they're trying to
they can't hear them say you gotta go to Grand Central,
Grand Central station, my aunt's constipation. Anyway, my kids find
that to be hilarious. I actually find it to be hilarious.

(01:23:50):
But that's what we call Grand Central Station. Kind of
weird though. In New York, Okay, this is this is strange.
New York is the weather is pretty nice, but there's
this reach are kind of empty, like did everybody get
out of town? This is a get out of town
weekend I wasn't aware of. It wasn't as hustling and bustling.
I felt like, as usually in February, you get around

(01:24:10):
Fashion Week, get around this. It does feel a little
bit like a get out of town week Where's next weekend?
Next week's President's Week? Isn't it is? In President's Day weekend,
next weekend. Yeah, okay, Valentine's Day is tomorrow. You guys
all set music. This is a big question. This is
very This is the most important thing I've ever gonna ask. Okay, music,

(01:24:32):
How long are you? And you're groping together? About a
year and a half now, okay, and you guys over
a year and a half. You guys are going to
Mexico right here Thursday Friday. Okay. Um, And now I
don't know if you probably didn't do this last year
because only a half a year last year. Have you
gotten anything for her mom? Oh no, yeah, you might

(01:24:54):
want to, like just a note or even a text.
I mean, if it's flowers and better. But it's a
strong move as a baller moved there. What do you
think about that move? Ramos, Ramos strong move? Yes, yes,
always include the mother in law. Well, not not yet
for Ryan, but for me it's enough. Ryan Ryan devil
is way too much information to me. He's not asking

(01:25:16):
her to marry him. They're not there yet. Okay, But
but you know, a year and a half in you
should at least at least drop her a note. Hey,
I just want to wish you a happy Valentine's Day
or whatever. And if you do card always good cards,
always good. Flowers, always good. Sherry's berries are great. Bowling
Branch sheets also awesome, although that would be creepy to

(01:25:37):
get for your mother in law. Hey, I just let
you guys going around the Hey, don't want to get
you some sheets. I want to give you some sheets.
Took a peek in that bedroom not looking so good.
We we know, we took a spin and we we
took a spin in your bed while you guys are
out of town. And I just want to know. It's
a little scrape you on the back. Bowling Branch. Just
just remember Bowling Branch dot com. He's a promo code

(01:25:57):
dug two stories of want to get to give you,
give you LaVar ball in like three minutes. I think
this is a major story because I like stories that
are It's going to be a story for the next
five years. It's it's like I've been on this baseball
thing here for six months that no one else has
been on. And maybe it's not a big deal now

(01:26:18):
this year because who's the who's the biggest name free
agents still unsigned? Um boy, it's probably uh, what's his name?
Now it's probably Martinez, right, more than more than Hospmer's
probably Martinez, And everybody thought he was going to get

(01:26:39):
hundred fifty two million dollar deal and now we're we
might not get to a hundred million dollars and like,
it's not important now, but it's important because next year's
made him Machado, next year's Bryce Harper. And last year
they were talking about Bryce Harper and four hundred million dollars,
five million dollars, And I can't, I just I can't
see us going from a this year, everything gets kind

(01:27:02):
of back in line and bounces, every balances their books,
and then next year people like, yeah, you know what
all that stuff, that's crazy, we're spaying. We're spending four
hundred million dollars on many of Machado and five million
dollars on Bryce Harper. If there's a correction, now, do
we go back to the old days? Next year, I
want to be ahead of it. I want to be

(01:27:22):
ahead of it for the first time in thirty four years.
Excuse me, the the largest per game attendance drop in
thirty four years and the second largest ever occurred last season.
Remember there's a hundred and twenty nine FBS teams two
thousand seventeen was down on average four hundred people a game.

(01:27:46):
That's the largest of client since in two thousand and
seventeen FBS average of forty two thousand, two hundred three
fans per game him is the lowest. So it had
been going up and a little bit of this is
like a stock market correction. And I will credit you

(01:28:07):
Ryan Music because he's making financial planning decisions for the future,
and he did the classic he had he had somebody
who's looking at the market for him and potentially his
you know, his girlfriend or whatever for the future. And like,
look the fact that you had these huge drops last
week in the stock market. Remember it's more about percentage
because we're at an all time high, and so that's

(01:28:29):
really that that could be the argument that football people
can make. Hey, look it's the second biggest drop, but
when all time high in terms of average attendance, so
the percentage of people, it's a very nominal percent to
drop in the bucket. I'm telling you this is a
problem for football. Football is hard to watch in person.

(01:28:54):
College football should be the best to watch in person
because you got cheerleaders, you got co ed it's better
for tailgating. It's that the old college atmosphere whatever. But
the games are so long, there are so many replays
um And frankly, one of the other issues that I

(01:29:15):
had with conference expansion is a lot of the teams
don't play. There are trial Texas doesn't play Texas A
and M anymore. Missouri doesn't play Kansas anymore. And I
know some of them are going to get back together,
but not playing the same rivals on a yearly basis.
And so if I was on the fence about going
in the past, like I don't know, man, I don't
know if I want to go to the game. It's

(01:29:35):
a long drive, it's increasingly expensive, it's expensive to do
everything else, and you're not playing teams that there's this
rivalry with that you've always gone to this one game,
and like it's on TV, it's super long. The replaces
are better on TV. I'm not going. You may think
it's a blip. I think we're starting to find a pattern.

(01:29:58):
I think that what the chart you have found in Carson,
Like we keep building these big stadiums. I think the
Carson Stadium is the dream one. Like if you can
make financial ends meet, maybe thirty thousands too small, But
a fifty thousands uh foot states fifty seed stadium with
the best luxury boxes and all high end stuff making

(01:30:20):
a unique experience that to me is better than a
ninety thousand seed stadium. So um, I'm intrigued by this story.
I just I wonder, who are these people have been
who have been going to college games a year after
Like a Saturday, Dude, I don't have any time on

(01:30:40):
a Saturday to go to college football game. Every Saturday,
I get up, we got girls sports and boys sports,
and then we catch our breath, maybe some more sports
than we turn on TV and we watch football the
rest of the day. I can't imagine giving away, you know,
even seven saturdays to go to a college football game,
even my school that I love. All right, let's get

(01:31:02):
to LaVar So LaVar Ball told ed Lithuanian reporter, who's
like the one guy left covering him, Hey, if the
Lakers don't take Jello Ball this offseason the draft, then
you know what. Look, Alonzo is not going to resign
with the Lakers, and he said in two years at

(01:31:24):
the end of his third year. It's important to point
out that while you can negotiate a contract extension after
your third year. You're under contract as a rookie, as
a lottery pick, as the second pick of the draft,
for four years. They have your rights for four years.
This is a great opportunity for Alonzo to take control

(01:31:45):
of Alonzo Ball I n C Alonzo Ball LLC. The
next response we should hear from Alonzo Ball is I
love my dad. He's an awesome dad, but he does
not speak for me in my business and my time
with the Lakers. I love my brothers, they're great. I

(01:32:05):
think my brothers are awesome players. I would love to
play with them. But they do not control nor will
they decide whether or not I play for the purple
and gold the Laker blue and yellow. They can't make
that decision. And if he's not, if a Lonzo Ball

(01:32:26):
is not, he doesn't have to in terms of the
Lakers managing this thing, because the Lakers are laughing this
thing off with. He doesn't even know that's a four
year deal. The Lakers are laughing off with the we're
actually playing better without his son, and there's been letting.
There's been no nonsense since he's been out of the country.

(01:32:47):
Alonzo is not playing tonight. Alonso is not playing in
the in the Rookie Sophomore Challenge. LaVar is not here.
LaVar's not even missed. Lavars over in Lithuania, and he
doesn't even know the length of contract. Like they're laughing
at off. But in order to be a leader of
a team, if you can't be the leader of your

(01:33:07):
own brand, how can be the leader of your team?
And if push comes to shove, we've seen this before.
If you really want Lebron James, like Lebron has no
time for other people talking to the media. There's a
lot of things that caused Isaiah Thomas to get dusted
and sent to the Lakers. A lot of people, okay,

(01:33:37):
but a lot of reasons. But a big reason was
Isaiah Thomas couldn't stop talking to the media. And Isaiah
Thomas is an All star. Isaiah Thomas average twint on
the game. Do you think he has any time for
LaVar Ball, whoever's two points a game at Washington State?
The answer is now, So I think that we can't

(01:33:59):
stop ourselves, the media, from at least talking about it.
It's important when you're in the media to understand how
clownish these remarks make and I know that Alonzo, just
like the Lakers, can not pay attention to him because
the second you say something about it, you give it
some validity. But you're at a position to which you

(01:34:20):
have to have command. You have to be verbal, you
have to be vocal. You have to take control of
a team. How can you take a control of a
team as a point guard? You can't take control of
your whole life, your own life. I think that's what
Laker people are struggling with right now as conditions on
the field chain. So can your insurance needs? Talk with

You know one of the things we don't do it
all the time, but sometimes there's just big stories, and
we want the opinions of people who cover these stories

(01:36:30):
on a daily basis. And when you've been doing this
thing as long as I've been doing it, man, I
used to have a lot more hair, but I'm still
I kind of got a little salt and pepper thing
going on the temples. I don't if you guys noticed that.
It's kind of sexy. I'm kind of a kind of
fan of myself. Anyway. When you've been doing this thing
this long, you got people everywhere. You got guys, you
got gals you can count on. Hey, we don't know everything,

(01:36:51):
but we know people that know what you want to know.
You know, sounds like you need a guy. I got
a guy. Bob Kravitz is our guy. Man. He's done
a great job for years in Indy, has got his
own radio show on w tr HR. Of course, he's
a calumnist in Indianapolis as well. At b Kravitz, you

(01:37:14):
won't know anything going on in Indy. He's the guy,
Bob Bob. How has the news been received or how
would you receive the news that Frank Reich is now
the new head coach after the Josh McDaniel's debacle. I
think people feel like, uh, the best guy got the
job despite everything. Now, whether that's a noble fiction that
they're just telling themselves after the whole fiasco and Josh McDaniels,

(01:37:37):
I don't really know, but uh, you know, he certainly
came off really well in his first press conference. Um,
he commanded the room. He he said a lot of
things that people wanted to hear, like they're gonna use
Andrew Luck in the in a in a no huddle
quite often. So, um, you know, I I think this
was the one guy that you could sell to the

(01:38:00):
Indianapolis fan base after after what happened with McDaniels. Okay,
so uh let's get to Frank Reich and the fact
that he did have command of the room. Give me
one thing that he said that stood out there. You're like,
this is a little bit different than something that hurt previously. Well,
you know Pat McAfee, our favorite Cuver reporter from Heartland, Uh,

(01:38:21):
you know, the former punter. He said, do you love
or hate Josh McDaniels for what happened? And uh, Frank
Reich said, well, I've always been comfortable in the backup
role and I thought you know that's pretty good, you know.
I mean, he was a terrific backup quarterback at Maryland
and and a Buffalo, and he understands that he wasn't
the first choice. He wasn't even the fifth choice. Um,

(01:38:44):
but I think everybody here feels like this is a
happy accident and that things will work out the way
they were supposed to work out. Whether it does or not,
we'll we'll see here in the next couple of years.
What's the status of Andrew luck shoulder. Yeah, well, the
last we heard, we got an update last week and
we were told today if nothing's nothing has changed. He's

(01:39:04):
out in California working with Tom House and some other
folks are you know, working on his arm, working on
his you know, his arm strength, his arms speed. Um.
He has not thrown a football yet, which is a
little bit concerning, But we do have a couple of
months to go before O T A S and camp
and then camp begins. So they're just taking it slow

(01:39:26):
and hoping that he can return to form Alright, So look,
they selected defensive coordinators, stuck with that after even after
mcdanie has left. Now you have an offensive guy. The
next step is personnel. This team was at a personnel
deficit in in comparison to the rest of the league. Uh,
how quickly can they turn around the personnel problems this

(01:39:46):
team has? Well, you know, if Chris Ballard gets it right,
they can they can get well fairly quickly. I believe
they've got the number three pick in the draft. Um.
I think they're gonna go with Bradley Chubb, the pass
rusher in North Carolina State. And they've got about seventy
seven million dollars to play with, which I think is
either second or third in the league in terms of

(01:40:09):
available money that they can use on free agents. So
if they make make some good decisions, uh, moving forward,
they have a chance to be competitive in the a
f C South. But look, none of this matters unless
Andrew Luck not only comes back, but comes back as
the quarterback he once was. Bob Kravitz w t HR

(01:40:30):
Radio and of course the Calumnists and Indie Fallum on
Twitter at b oh, I'm sorry w t r H
t h R t V. Bob must have you on
radio show too. Don't you stop your own radio show? None?
I used to, but not anymore. You're not how radio works.
That's why you get a new one very very soon.
That's also that's all. That's also the way it works, Bob,
great stop, thanks so much for to join us. Sure

(01:40:50):
I got a guy, all right, we got a guy
that covers the lakershire Bleacher Report, Eric Pinks and joins
us um at Eric E R I C remember not
with a K E R I C E I n
C us right work for Bleacher Report and NBA TV.
Let's start with the LaVar ball comments of yesterday, which
took place in Lithuania and everybody followed them on Twitter.

(01:41:11):
What's the reaction been like from Lakers camp. I mean,
there's we're not gonna talk about LaVar is sort of
the approach that the Lakers have. It's not they're they're
done talking about LaVar. They've had enough and they just
want to talk about it. They're they're just not going
to entertain anything. And the comments of LaVar said, we're
so future leading, like so in like two thousand and

(01:41:32):
twenty two, they're gonna do something like it's too early
to take anything he's saying. Seriously, he says so many things.
If you think about how many things he's gonna say
before and twenty two, My lord, I mean it's I
can't worry about that. They have Londo for some time.
He's got another three years plus after that he's restricted.
So in the meantime, Look, if you want to invite

(01:41:54):
one of the I wouldn't draft the the middle kid
with the Jello. The Jello is it Meloy's Jello? Right?
I think I confused? But Jello you I wouldn't draft him.
I don't think they need to draft him. But if
you want to invite him to play on the summer
league squad in Vegas with the Lakers team, I don't
have a problem with that. I mean why not. I

(01:42:15):
mean there's no reason other than LaVar. I mean, they
don't want to give up the impression that they count
out to LaVar, so in a way, maybe they would
have invited him. And now LaVar saying all these things,
maybe that's enough reason not to invite him to be
on the summer team. No question, I think it's gonna
have the opposite the intended effect. But I think the
most troubling thing is they have told LaVar Ball to

(01:42:37):
stop talking about the Lakers, and he can't stop talking
about the Lakers. Yeah, no, I mean this is who
he is if they had to know that's who he
was when they drafted the kid. It's it comes with
the territory. It's the baggage. And I don't hold anything
against him. I like some of what he's doing. I
don't like someone he's doing. I I don't think it

(01:42:58):
really matters to the Lakers. I don't think they like
the noise. But at the same time, they've they've been
a franchise that's been the center of so much through
the last however many years, you know, with Kobe and
Shack and all that, and they're well accustomed to noise,
and I don't think it's really going to hurt the franchise.
What they need to do right now is figure out

(01:43:19):
if they can get some stars this summer, do or don't?
What kids do they have a Lonzo Ingraham, Kuzma, et cetera.
How many of these kids are going to be there
and can be a huge part of their next run
as a payout team, which I don't think is this year.
But there's that potential that they can get their relatively quickly.
So there's a lot to worry about other than a

(01:43:39):
father who's got a huge platform because of who he
is for whatever reason, I don't think it really makes
a dent um. Okay, So one thing that could be
a bit problematic in the short term, because the LaVar
thing is more of a long term, is Alonzo returning
and Isaiah Thomas's desire to play and to get buckets
and to re establish himself as as a major your

(01:44:00):
score in the NBA. How do you think they're going
to handle that after the All Star Break? Well, I
mean I I think they fit well. And the thing
about a Lonzo is that he's a low usage point guard,
which in this day and age is a very rare thing.
He doesn't want to have the ball in his hands.
What he wants is when he gets the rebound. He's
one of the best rebounding guards in the league. They'll
grab a rebound, he'll kick it up ahead or if

(01:44:23):
they're running stuff in the offensive the half court. Lakers
are not very good in a half court yet. Uh.
He's not somebody who's going to have the ball and
go like Damian Lillard who's going to try to break
someone down, or John Wall. He's not good at scoring
off the dribble. He gets blocked at the basket, he
misses shots. He's been able to show before his kne
injury that he can hit the spot up shot, which

(01:44:44):
is what he did well in college as well open shots.
Kick him the ball, he can hit it. So he's
not a traditional point guard. What you really need next
to a Lonzo ball is an attack score. You need
someone who can get to the basket, can drive, and
so I think that they actually fit well together offensively.
Defense of Lee, Lonzo can guard the bigger positions. He's
probably better guarding two guards than he is guarding the point.

(01:45:05):
And Isaiah has the speed, although he doesn't quite have
his his physical physicality back. He's not quite himself from
his hip injury that made him miss most of the
start of the season. Uh, if he can get his
health back, he's quick enough to stay with guards. He
doesn't have the size, but the Lakers might be able
to scheme around it. So there's a lot of potential.
And I really think that the next two months or

(01:45:26):
however long through April is a key time for the
Lakers to see can these two guys fit together long term?
Because you have the Lakers would love to get Lebron
and they'd love to get Paul George but if their
Plan A doesn't come through, and I don't think they
keep Isaiah Thomas if they get Lebron that experiment didn't
really work well in Cleveland. But if they don't get
these superstars, there's a reasonably high chance that Isaiah Thomas

(01:45:47):
is back. But this is that that's why it's so
important to see right now what they look like together,
because maybe they do fit really well, or maybe on
paper they do the way I described and maybe in
reality it's a terrible fit. Yeah, I think the problems
of the defensive end. And the other problem is the
point that you pointed out that actually Isaiah Thomas even
pointed out. I know you were probably there at that
press conference yesterday where he was he gave some really

(01:46:08):
thoughtful answers, but he admitted that he's pent and he's
trying to get the explosiveness back in that hip, and
there's a lot of people that think he'll never have
that explosiveness back in his hip, And uh, that makes
it really hard for you to lock in to want
to be in the Isaiah Thomas business and in the
long term future. Eric pigasco worked for Bleach Report and
NBA TV covering the Lakers. Our guy on the scene, Eric,

(01:46:30):
thanks so much for joining us in the Doug Gottlip Show.
Of course, Animes. So you needed a guy, we got
you a guy. As conditions on the field chain. So
can your insurance needs talk with the Farmers aging today
so you can assess with your policies. Game ready, find
an agent at Farmers dot com. Steve de Seger, what
do you got? We'll start with NBA six games tonight.

(01:46:52):
Lakers are off, but launce O Ball will not play
for them until after they All Star break due to
his bad name. He did practice today, but Ball has
missed the last thirteen straight games. The rookie is averaging
ten points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. The late game
tonight's in Denver, the Nuggets hosting San Antonio after ten
thirty Eastern time. Jamal Murray averaging sixteen points per game.
Questionable for denvery misshoot around with a chest injury. The

(01:47:15):
Nuggets are tied for the number seven and eight seeds
with New Orleans half game over the l a Clippers,
who are idle. Toronto gets things underway in ninety minutes,
hosting Miami. If Toronto wins, the Raptors will not only
have a six game win streak, they'll be up to
forty and sixteen on the season. The Raptors right now
a half game ahead of Idle Boston for the top
seed in the East. Milwaukee's G League team claim guard

(01:47:36):
Brandon jennings Off Waivers. Oklahoma City is going to be
hosting Cleveland tonight. Both Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony or
game time decisions with their sprained ankles. We should know
roughly ninety minutes before tip both of them did go
through shoot around this morning. College basketball tonight at nine
pm Eastern, now number one ranked Virginia plays at Miami
and number two Michigan States at Minnesota. The Ravens and

(01:47:58):
Bears will play in the Hall of Fame game on
the first Thursday night in August and Kent in Ohio.
Baltimore will make its first appearance in the exhibition and
ray Lewis is going into the whole this year, so
is Chicago's Brian or Locker. Back to you, great stuff,
Steve some in some interesting games night in college basketball,
just because it's been such a weird year, Like I

(01:48:19):
can't I can't describe how strange a year. It is, uh,
maybe here's the best way to go. We we You
see the rankings, you heard Steve to say or talk
about it, like Virginia just lost at home, just lost
a home to Virginia Tech and got the number one ranking.
Right at Michigan State just beat per Due granted at

(01:48:41):
home in the last second shot. But they don't have
you know, the seed, the the seeds that they released
on Sunday, even though they're you know, no one holds
us to them, they weren't a number one seed. Texas
Tech is alone in first place in the Big twelve,
which is why they consider the deepest conference in the country.
Actually play every team twice to double round robin and
they're only a three seed. Like this just weird stuff. No,

(01:49:03):
the last lost last week, Perdue lost twice last last
week and they're still ranks six in the country. Is
still considered a one seed. So a lot of weird stuff.
And then so many road teams have been able to
come in and pull off upsets. Now you have big
road favorites. Tonight, big road favorites. Kansas comes in takeing

(01:49:25):
on Iowa State, a place that they've won recently, but
I would stay far better at home seven point home dogs.
They're just daring you to take the home dog, daring you,
Miami six and a half point six and a half
point home dog, daring you, absolutely daring you to take it.

(01:49:48):
Some sizeable home ducks. I'll get some picks for you
up coming. Still have time to get into couple of
picks here. The only thing colder than winter is the
thought of being stranded in it. That's why Auto Zone
offers free battery testing in a wide selection of proven,
tough to last batteries, so you can start your car
with confidence. Get in the zone Auto Zone. The NBA

(01:50:09):
is a long season. It's a long, long year. It's
the reason I can't freak out about how well the
Calves played on Sunday, is I saw how poorly the
Cavs played the previous Sunday. I've seen Oklahoma City get
blown out by the Oklahoma but I've seen a Golden
State get blown out by the Oklahoma City thunder. I mean, look, look,
the NBA season is ridiculously long. It isn't any different

(01:50:32):
any different than your your kids, your kids school, Right,
you get the February and like when spring break, all
right when spring break, and then once it's spring break,
now it's sunny outside and you're stuck. You're cooped up
inside all day. Um. Ryan Rissilo joined me last week.
I don't remember which show I was hosting. They all
kind of run together. I think it was the Dan
Patrick Show. And he was talking about a conversation he

(01:50:53):
had with Bob Meyers, Bob Meyers the general manager of
the Warriors, and he was like, imagine if you get
a group of guys, you decide where you're gonna go
in hike Mount Everest, and you get up to the
top you never thought possible. You hike Mount Everest. You're like, man,
that's awesome. And then six months later, your buddy Collins
and said, all right, let's go do it again. That's
what the Warriors are fighting. It's that complacency. It's it's

(01:51:15):
the mundane process to which you have to kind of
mix it up. I've been asked a million times if
you were a head coach, well, how would you do
things differently? I said, I do a million things differently.
You have to you have to have discipline, but you
have to empower players to discipline themselves, discipline each other,
on the other hand, you can't let it run amuck
like a like a code read and a few good men.

(01:51:36):
My brother he has an idea and one of the
things that that he's done it several different places he's
coached out of the last twenty years, is there once
a week, have practice and they'll have what they call
a pro day, which is you're just gonna work on
your game for the next level. Now it's getting guys
into the gym and getting guys to work out, and
getting guys to buy in and investing in themselves. And

(01:51:56):
you're still getting out of it what you want. And
the NBA they have teams, the Laker have something called
it get what you Want Day. You come in, they
think they're gonna have practice and they say, all right,
today's they get what you Want Day. If you want
to lift, lift, if you want a massage, massage, if
you want to run the treadmill, run the treadmill. If
you want to come out and get a thousand jumpers up,
get a thousand jumpers up. If you want to stay

(01:52:17):
and get a couple of guys together and play something,
you can do that. If you want to go home,
go home. We're not judging, you get what you want.
It's an eighty two game season. It's a long year.
And what's interesting about the litany of injuries that have happened.
There's a ridiculous dumber of injuries. Have you seen this story.

(01:52:40):
We talked a little bit about it yesterday. More injuries
now than there were the entire year last year. And
some people think it's because they've stretched out this season. Right.
The season is a week longer, there's less back to backs.
And while you would think that gives more guys more
time off, guys like yo, I got extra day off,

(01:53:00):
I'm gonna go out. You go out. You don't take
care of your body. The physical wear and tear is
still there. Your body breaks down. So last night, when
Steve Kerr handed the clipboard two players in an effort
to give them ownership of their team, some people said
it was disrespectful towards the Suns. Here's Kerr on the
reason behind the move. As coaches, our job is to

(01:53:21):
nudge them in the right direction, guide them, um, but
we don't control them. I don't feel like we focused
well at all the last months, and it just seemed
like the right thing to do, and I thought they
communicated really well, drew up some nice plays and it
was a good night. I told you afterwards, I said that,
you know, people may make a big deal of it,
and uh had nothing to do with with being disrespectful

(01:53:42):
and had to do with me trying to reach my team.
I have not reached them for the last month. They're
tired of my voice. I'm tired of my voice. So
there's some self deprecation in there, there's some reality to
it in there, and there's just a setting the record
that this has nothing to do with any other team
like it. I like it. Look, I played for a

(01:54:05):
coach in Eddie Sutton, who he didn't do when I
was there, but after I left, he didn't think the
team was tough enough. So they've done. They did basketball, practicing,
football pads. You have to try like different things. You
come into a meeting and all right, everybody, let's let's
everybody's sit on the floor, and now let's somebody comes in,

(01:54:25):
who's custodial services come in? And you say, hey, listen,
I'm just gonna throw a couple of ideas at you.
Which one do you think is the best idea? You
try different things in the middle of a season, you
hear different voices. But more than anything, when you empower
the people around you. Look, we do this on our show,

(01:54:50):
Dan Buyer's got the day off. Like I tell Dan
all the time. Dan, when we do game time, you
come up with something rank them. That's his h What
are the other ones? He has a couple other ones
that are that are really really good music. He did
more or Less, which is one that we do um
which is we did a lot during the NFL playoffs?
Who has more wins? Tom Brady or like the entire

(01:55:13):
Jags franchise. Uh, he came up with um man. I
can't think of it, right, I tell Romo's all the time.
Romos can play as many drops as he want as
long as he doesn't drop me. Right. That's that's the
That's the big thing. It's And I'm not gonna sit
here and say I'm the coach. I mean I would
say that music is more the coach or more kind
of the leader. But the idea is like you're gonna

(01:55:34):
get more out of people when you empower them. Now,
you can't. You can't empower them so much that they
think they run the damn joint, Right, You can't. Draymond
Green has the has the white board, and Andre goodal
as the white board. That doesn't mean in the NBA
Finals they grabbed the white board and says, hey, guys,
we're doing this. But but you know, ten fifteen minds

(01:55:57):
are much better than one mind. They just are. You
see things from way more different angles. It's not It's
not any different than replay. Right. If you just have
the game camera, it sometimes misses things. If you use
all the different cameras focusing on a game, you can
catch things. That's the same. That's the same idea that

(01:56:17):
Steve Steve Kerr is attacking this team with. Tired of
my voice, you're tired of my camera angle, Let's switch
up to camera angle. So I'd love to say that's
coaching in two thousand eighteen, but it's not. It's always
kind of been coaching. The best of the best find
different ways to motivate their players at different times in
a long, tedious season. Once you love a bigger tax refund.

Von Miller really wants Kirk Cousins to be a bronco.

Fox Sports Radio. Every day we like to conclude this
show gets you updated. Bang bang bang bang bang, many stories.
You can that way if you don't care what I say,
maybe you'll care about the stories that I'm saying them about.

(01:57:25):
Let's let's fire through them, shall we. Maybe a couple
of college basket picks. On the other end, Let's get
to the press. The press ask conditions on the field chain.
So can your insurance needs? Talk with the Farmers agent
today so you can assess whether your policy is game ready.
Find an agent at Farmers dot com. Are Farmers right? Okay?

(01:57:56):
What do you want for me? Steve the sec firing
right through him. Frank Reich left the Eagle. Of course,
he became the cold tag coach. Had his news conference today. Yes,
he said he'll call the plays, but he was also
asked in Andy about Andrew lut just came off of
a team that we lost our franchise quarterback and still
won a Super Bowl. This game is not built on
any one player. He is magical, he has special, unique
traits and abilities. But if we're gonna win championships, it's

(01:58:18):
gonna be about surrounding our whole team and the way
we're gonna bring out the best in each other. Frank
Reich in Indianapolis today, Excuse me, No, he's right there.
And the Eagles, by the way NFL Network reporting, you're
probably not going to hire an offensive coordinator to replace
him because Doug Peterson prefers to call the plays. Eagles
have lost break and the quarterbacks coach down for Philip

(01:58:40):
Philippo's Minnesota's offensive coordinator. Is von Miller going to be
successful in recruiting Kirk Cousins to play for Denver? Remember
Super Bowl Week, the Broncos star linebacker said the QB
is just what Denver needs to take us over the edge.
Cousins later had posted a photo with a caption love
a good rainbow On vacation. Someone noted that von Miller
likely Love's rainbows too, and Miller replied, you're absolutely right.

(01:59:03):
If Kirk Love's rainbows, I love rainbows capital letters. Well, look,
he's the best guy on the market. Most people think
Denver is going to be his destination. It may come
down to dollars and whether whether the Kirk wants, you know,
top dollar in in the past. In the past, John
Elway hasn't been willing to pay top dollar for a quarterback.
Maybe now he overpays, you know. It's kind of like Cleveland.

(01:59:25):
Cleveland doesn't want to take a quarterback at number one,
but they may be forced to take a quarterback at
number one, and because they've missed on so many quarterbacks
of the past couple of years. Same thing with the Broncos.
They may not want to want to overpay for Kirk Cousins,
but they may have to overpay for Kirk Cousins because
they've underpaid and look what they've gotten in return the
past couple of years. And the TV ratings are out

(01:59:47):
on sports Media watch for the NBA blowout if calvs.
Celtics on Sunday. It drew an impressive four and a
half million viewers, that's up over fifty compared to the
Sunday game from a year before, and in fact it's
the most watched Sunday regular NBA game since. Of course,
the daytime winner Olympics the day before, also on cable,

(02:00:07):
got four and a half million. And when NBA went
up against Winter Olympics Saturday night, the NBA showcase game
was Golden State, San Antonio that got two point eight million.
Olympics got about twenty two point eight million. Yes, the
Winter Olympics are down compared to itself four years ago,
but it's kind of doug like the NFL ratings are down. Discussion.

(02:00:28):
It's down when you compare the NFL to the NFL
on time still kills everything else. It does kill everything else,
but it's it's interesting. I know that the Olympics skewed
towards women more so than towards men, and it also
exkews West. Most of the top ten Olympic rating cities
are in the West. There are a lot of Olympians
from Colorado, Utah, California. Yeah, I don't know if that's

(02:00:51):
why excused West as much as also times it's time
zone dependent here now as well. Look the Olympics is
a lot of things going against it right now. There's
no NHL uh NHL hockey players playing in it, the
time zone, we're getting stuff on tape delay, We're not
getting stuff live. It's the Winter Olympics, and it's we
we we you know, we barely we barely care about

(02:01:12):
the Summer Olympics anymore with a couple exceptions, let alone
the Winter Olympics. So uh, it's got some stuff working
against it. And the and and the beauty to the
NBA is all of the drama creates constant discussion about
the league, which is constant promotion about the league, which
you don't get with the Olympics. By the way, US
men's hockey opens tomorrow, and I don't know if you've

(02:01:34):
seen the unified Korean women's hockey team. They'll be facing
winless Japan tomorrow. Koreans have been outscored sixteen nothing in
their two hockey games so far. I think they have
eight teams in the tournament and they're right twenty three
and then in the world but since the host country,
they get to participate. And finally, this story that we
didn't have time for it last week from a p
the a Romanian university published the results of a study

(02:01:58):
to answer the question how safe is it to eat snow?
There was a seventeen experiment. They found it's safe to
eat snow that was a half day old, safer if
it's in the colder months. But two days old, No,
the snow is not safe to eat, said the professor
from Transylvania. He had the idea first to study this
when he saw his kids eating snow. And he makes
sure to say, I'm not recommending that anyone eats snow.

(02:02:20):
I'm just saying you won't get ill if you eat
a bit and it's not m hmmm mmm, um. Who
who said this is the bud eating snow? That's professor,
Romanian University. Don't eat yellow snow. I thought that was
actually a commandment. Just snow is what they're talking about. Fresh,

(02:02:42):
don't yellow, don't eat don't eat fresh snow. Don't eat
yellow snow, especially, don't eat yellow snow. And the press
all right, I don't like, I love Iowa stayed at
home tonight as uh as uh two point seven seven
point underdogs. Um to Tech has taken on Oklahoma. Who
comes limping limping in? But I like Oklahoma to keep

(02:03:05):
that game close. Seven points is a lot for the Sooners,
who have found ways to be close even though they
lost five of the last six games. I love Michigan
State ten point dogs on the road tonight against Minnesota. Regily,
since Reggi Lynch has been out, it's been a disaster
in Minnesota. Uh I think Miami they'll win straight up.
Iowa State, Miami winning straight up as home underdogs. Those

(02:03:25):
are some picks. Check me out tomorrow on First Things
First on Fox Sports one at six thirty a m.
Eastern time. This
