Fox Sports Radio. Hope you're having just a spectacular day.

(00:25):
There is no doubt in my mind. It's a better
day than many many of your friends are having. That's
that's true, especially better than some of these former NBA players.
It is the Doug Gottlieb Show. It is Fox Sports Radio.
Wow Wow Wow. We have a podcast that follows this show.
It'll drop at the top of the third hour, so

(00:47):
it's two hour live radio show podcast top of the
third hour. And because the pod and it lives forever,
we can talk about what I really want to talk about,
which is Victor Webman Yama dropping forty on twenty one
shots last night, Like wow, oh my god, he's as
good as people thought he could be. But that's not
the story of the day. That's not the job of

(01:08):
Fox Sports radio have opinions on things that matter, and
you can't. We can't go with even last night's stories
or the day before stories. The story is that, as
you've heard all day long, Chnce Phillips, Terry Rozier among
like thirty people arrested by the FBI. I don't do

(01:32):
I think the headlines are interesting. Yes, I actually think
some of the details in some of these stories are
more interesting than like, I don't know what Chauncey Billups did.
I know Chauncey. I played basketball with him when we
were in high school. He stayed in my house. We've

(01:55):
remained friendly, but we're not like boys. That doesn't mean
I'm distancing myself. I'm just saying I have no idea
what he did. Terry Rozier obviously a lot of that,
but the details are really interesting. First, we play a
couple things for you. Here's Cash Pttel, who's the FBI's director,
at a press conference.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Ruler Today, individuals such as Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, and
Terry Rozier were taken into custody today former current NBA
players and coaches. What you don't know is that this
is an illegal gambling operation. And sports rigging operation that
spanned the course of years. The FBI led a coordinative
takedown across eleven states to arrest over thirty individuals today

(02:35):
responsible for this case, which is very much ongoing. Not
only did we crack into the fraud that these perpetrators
committed on the grand stage of the NBA, but we
also entered and executed a system of justice against La
Casinosha to include the Bonano, Gambino, Genevesi, and Luchase crime families.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I do wish he went Italian pronunciation right, Like somewhere
back there there's going like, hey, it's a lutey the
it's the Luciano. Good like this dick can't pronounce nothing already,
I thought, buyer when I read this that Billips and
Damon Jones, they're accused of using their celebrity to lure

(03:23):
people into a playing game poker game that was rigged
by the mafia. The mafia allegedly, this is my favorite
part of the story. They use sophisticated cheating technologies. Now,
all of a sudden, you got Jason Stewart's attention, because
he's like, hey, this sounds like the Astros. I hate Springer,
I hate Springer anyway, including shuffling machines that could read

(03:48):
the cards in the deck, poker chip trays with hidden cameras,
special contact lenses, and glasses that could read pre marked
cards at an X ray table that could read cards
faced down on the table. Once a so called fish
a whale if they're you know, really valuable lost. The
mafia used extortion and violence to make sure they paid

(04:11):
their gambling debts. Noicella said. Investigators found the scheme involved
members of Yeah, the Banano, the Menano, the Cambino, the
Chase c the Genii, Khrime families right like, it's the
one time I'd love to say that they're not Italian
mafia families, but they're all Italian last names. I can't
make that up. I thought that that part to me.

(04:38):
And then the idea that that Terry Rogier told a
buddy he's gonna leave a game early with a knee injury.
There's video of that game which he was, and he
to bet the under, and then the guy collected the
winnings and then came over and cut up the under
with him. Those are the parts to me that are
more interesting than the actual headlines. How about you, Dan.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Byer, Well, yeah, I think that they would be, I mean,
because the details get into all the nitty gritty stuff.
But I also look at it and say that I
feel that Terry Rosier's role is separate from how I
view Jones and how I specifically view Billups, because Billups is,
I mean, he's He's a Hall of Fame player, Chauncey

(05:23):
Billups was a guy who did media. There's it's this
mask that you had no idea that you never would
have guessed was behind all of this, and to the
point of suckering people into rigged poker games so he
could get a cut. I think when sports gambling became legal,
we wondered that if guys would doctor their minutes, if

(05:46):
they would fake an injury, And we've seen that so
far with Johntay Porter, and now we've seen it with
Terry Rozier. So I think Rosier's part is is separate
from what Billups is. But the other thing in the
article done by ESPN and what the FBI has revealed
is with Damon Jones, who had a close relationship with

(06:09):
Lebron James Lebron is now while he's not named not
a part of this becomes a part of this because
the FBI found that Jones had given information that Lebron
was not going to play a game for the Lakers
against the Milwaukee Bucks in twenty twenty three, And so
now it's where do all these tentacles go? So that

(06:32):
is obviously the biggest story is in all the details.
It's now how where all these cracks and all these
leaks end up trickling down to, maybe to the greatest
player of all time, who we don't know if Lebron
had any role in all of this right now he doesn't.
But I was shocked by Chauncey Billups. So now I'm

(06:53):
not going to put anything past anybody in talking about
this stuff.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yeah, it's Chase. But what most intrigues you about these stories.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
Just the line that you had read about the extortion
and the leveraging of people that are losing a lot
of money. That's that's what Adam Silver should be most
concerned about. When people involved in his league that have
direct chances of, you know, determining the outcome of games

(07:28):
and these prop bets, when they get leveraged, when they
get compromised due to violence or financial leverage, what they
will do to get out of that compromise. I think
that people kind of lose sight of that, like this
isn't just a gambling story. And I think the casual
nature of this is like, you know, sports gambling's legal,

(07:51):
what's the problem here? I mean, sports gambling's legal. What's
the problem is when these when these types of people
that have been doing this for decades and decades get
leverage on people that can determine games, and then you
have all these people with access to these prop bets.
I kind of want to go back to a piece
of sound. Michael Porter did a did a podcast in

(08:14):
August on one night with Steiny, and remember we played
it on the podcast. And what strikes you most about
this sound isn't what Porter's saying as much as how
he is saying it, how casual he is saying it,
which tells you this has talked about all the time
among NBA teams.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Think about it. You get mad at these dudes like
they do the sports betting, but think about it, if
you could get all your homies rich by telling him, Yo,
ten thousand dollars on under you know this one game,
I'm gonna act like I got an injury and I'm
I'm I'm gonna sit out. I'm gonna come out after
three minutes, and they all get a little bad because
you did it one game like that is so not okay.
But some people probably think like that. They come from

(08:55):
nothing and all their homies have nothing, and they're like, bro,
if I if I come out of this game after
three minutes, y'all all hit on my under We're all
getting a little back.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
I just think Adam Silver should be like stunned by
the casual nature of that.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Yeah, I agree with you. Oh hey, wait, what happened yesterday?
That's right, the NCAA approved the ability for coaches like
myself and for student athletes to gamble on professional sports.
What could possibly go wrong? What could possibly go wrong?
You know, it's really interesting the sports gambling aspect to it,

(09:31):
which is like we it's like we try and avoid
the human nature of it. Jason, you and I we've
all seen this coming. And and the gambling companies, by
the way, that even support the show in this network, right, Like,
I'm not going to sit here and lie to you
tell you that we're the only reason we still exist

(09:55):
is because of gambling. Right, the reason the NFL is
so popular is because of game. But just like anything it,
it is a drug, okay, and people cannot control it.
Just like there's a percentage of people that I can
have a beer or two beers. I'm good if I'm

(10:15):
not driving and it's a night when I want to
I'm good, like, but I'm not gonna wake up the
next day thinking I gotta have another beer. I gotta
have another drink. If I have more than two beers
to night, I will wake up tomorrow going I'm not
drinking for a month, Like I just don't feel great,
like you know whatever. That's just how I'm wired. But
many people wake up thinking when can I When is

(10:38):
the moment where five o'clock hits and I can get
to my next drink. And then there's some people that
wake up at first thing in the morning like I
just gotta have a drink to good work. Right, that's
that gene or whatever, the disease of alcoholism. What's the
same thing with gambling. Same thing with gambling. And you know,
there's no licensing for it, there's no training course for it.

(11:02):
You can do it on your phone and just like
anything else, you'll get that immediate rush and high and
make a little money and be like this is easy.
Now you're gonna lose money. That's how it works. It's
just a case of can you are you losing the
type money that you can say, hey, it was entertaining,
it was fun, and then I won a little bit.

(11:25):
But yeah, people will do evil things to not get exposed,
not just for gambling, but for losing massive sums of money.
And once you once you pick up that phone, once
you answer, once you say I don't have enough money
to cover this debt, you will do anything to get
out of it. And then once you try and do
anything to get out of it, now they got you
and they can do anything they want to you because

(11:46):
you don't want to get exposed because you'll never be
able to work in your sport again.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Go ahead, Dan, It's funny because and I'm even looking
up at my screen right now. And at one point
Terry Rosier was investigated by the NBA and found no wrongdoing.
Think how crappy is your investigation? Then now if you
found no wrongdoing, But now the FBI is like, uh yeah,

(12:11):
here was a time where thirty bets were placed on
Terry Rosier numbers, which is my point. I think when
gambling became illegal or became legal, we thought I thought,
I think other people think this way that it's all right,
you're picking the Knicks to beat the Calves, and if
Donovan Mitchell throws away a basketball late, oh maybe that's

(12:32):
him fixing the game. But the fact that there are
lines on what Terry Rozier does is the problem because
I'll I had this conversation within the last couple of weeks.
I said, you're not going to have a superstar or
a main game be the way that you make money
on this. What it's going to be is something subtle

(12:53):
and it's something little. And the reason that they were
set off or tipped off to this the sports book
was sports books were because of the unusual high activity
towards Terry Roseier's number on that night. And to me,
what an atrocious plan. Like the documentary about whatever went
down with Chauncey Billups and how Damon Jones was involved

(13:14):
in that, that's gonna be fascinating. This Terry Roseer stuff
is silly to me, considering that it seems it would
be pretty obvious that Terry Roseer is getting all this action.
Maybe some things awry here and the fact that we
actually have lines on Terry rose Heer, Like it's not
just over unders and it's how many points is Lebron
gonna have or how many points is coming Durant gonna have?

(13:37):
Like we're going down to Terry Roseer and that's where
the money is made. That's the part where I think
when this was all made legal, we didn't realize and
how deep this could go. And I think this is
a perfect example because it just looks pretty stupid to
me that people think that Terry Roseier and those people
could get away with that. You guys agree, like, I mean,

(13:58):
I totally agree.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
I completely agree, completely agree. And I and the idea
that who's gonna notice? They all notice? It's not Do
you remember the Alabama baseball coach who got fired a
couple of years ago, right because he called his buddy
in Indiana and he said the starters out and they
put like twenty grand on the game, Like it's just
a little Yeah, the people don't bet twenty grand on

(14:21):
Alabama baseball game. Course it's sent off alarms.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Yeah, that's why the Packers and the Cowboys they're bet
the most right because of the most popular teams, there's
an actual feeling for them. Why would there be any
feeling towards Terry Rozier's line that night and have it
all end up being unders.

Speaker 6 (14:40):
I I think there's also a point because I hear
this from some guys who look at all this and say, well,
the system's working for gambling, the bad actors are getting caught.
But I I not to get political, but like I'm
pretty sure the same thing was said about Watergate back
in the day. I'm pretty sure that was exact line.
It's like, well, the system's working, we're catching corruption, but

(15:02):
it keeps. When you're in a pr battle like something
like the NBA is where it is you want to
because there is a magic to sport. You have to
convince everyone it's all on the up and up at
all times. Yeah, And the more times this happens in public,
the more cracks and that happen until nobody believes you
anymore correct.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
And that point, it's a great point, and it's the
old It's why the Donneghie thing has done so much
harm to this league. And here's here's that this works
in concert with what we'll talk about in the pod, Chris,
what you and I discussed. The first two nights of
the NBA have been great. Even Jason Stewart was like,

(15:43):
I actually liked watching an NBA game, and Jason had
been like, I'm done, Like I don't you know, but
if you watch Oklahoma City play, those guys play hard
kind of ego lists, the Rockets are a fun watch.
Those two games the first night were great. Last night,
Victor weban you scored forty points and twenty one shots,

(16:03):
thoroughly dominate. It looks like forget, but the next star
he looks like a star. And after two really good
nights of play, now all of a sudden, the ship
is taking on a ton of water. And even though
none of the allegations involved affecting the actual outcome of

(16:24):
a game. Right, just like when you get a new iPhone,
you can get your iPhone seventeen, right, you got to
click on all the things that you're agreeing to. We
read you know again. The parts that jumped out to
me are the X ray table, the hidden camera, the
special contact lenses. Right, that's the stuff. I'm like, dude,
this is like a movie. This stuff really exists. Unbelievable

(16:47):
to the average fan, Like of course the NBA, they're
throwing games, they don't care, doesn't matter, they're not reading
any of these details. This does I don't want to
I don't know if I would the word are repara
bulls too, but it does a ton of damage to
what Chris Prefett is talking about the credibility of the league.

(17:08):
And that's that's a hard one to come back from
this From the NBA, we're in the process of reviewing
the federal indictments announced today. Terry Rogier and John Spilbs
are being placed on immediate lead from their teams. We'll
continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities. We take these
allegations with the most seriousness, and the integrity of our
game remains a top priority. This is the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (17:30):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on

to NFL in a moment with Adam Kaplan. He's our
Fox Sports Radio NFL insider. Before we get to that,
let me get you to Dan Fire. Get a quick update, Danny,
what he got.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
There's my music.

Speaker 8 (17:57):
Just needed it, all right.

Speaker 3 (17:59):
The big news of the day, continuingly breaking, is more
information is coming out following the FBI arrest of Trailblazer's
head coach and Hall of Fame player Chauncey Billups, Miami
Heat guard Terry Rozier, thirty four people in all arrested
for their roles and the sports gambling schemes and illegal
poker games that were backed by the mafia. FBI director

(18:20):
Cash Pattel fraud.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Is mind boggling. It's not hundreds of dollars. It's not
thousands of dollars. It's not tens of thousands of dollars.
It's not even millions of dollars. We're talking about tens
of millions of dollars in fraud and theft and robbery
across a multi year investigation.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
The NBA has put Billups and Rosier on indefinite leave.
The Trailblazers have just named assistant coach Tiago Splitter as
their interim coach while Billups is on leave following his arrests.
This morning should also be noted that former NBA guard
and former coach Damon Jones was one of the thirty
four people arrested today for his role in these schemes

(18:58):
as well. The Toronto Blue Jay will start Trey A.
Savage on the mound for tomorrow's Game one of the
World Series against the Dodgers. Dodgers are countering with Blake
Snello was announced the starter earlier this week. Aaron Jones
back for the Vikings from his hamstring injury. He's expected
to play tonight against the Chargers to start Week eight
at eight fifteen Eastern time. Lamar Jackson practiced on a
limited basis for the Ravens today, trying to return from

(19:21):
his hamstring injury. No practice for Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown,
who missed his second straight workout with a hamstring issue.
Doug back to.

Speaker 1 (19:28):
You, Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's
welcome in, Adam Kaplan. He's our Fox Sports Radio NFL
in Saturday. Also hosts the Inside the Birds podcast. Kat
thanks so much for joining us. We've been actually talking
about it all week. Say Quon Barkley, what's going on

(19:50):
that he is so far less productive this year than last.

Speaker 9 (19:54):
All right, so let me unpack this for you. So look,
if you put the top ten mysteries in the National
Football League, this is probably top three, right, Like.

Speaker 8 (20:02):
Why is this happening? Positive or negative? Now?

Speaker 9 (20:05):
Barkley's trying at times a little too hard, I'm told,
But here's the reality of it. Left tackle Jordaniltta is
not playing at the same level.

Speaker 8 (20:12):
Now.

Speaker 9 (20:12):
We're talking about the run game, by the way, past blocking,
they're phenomenal. Run blockingly been very bad. So my lot
is not blocking in the run game typically like he does.
Right left guard Landard Dickerson now is a back issue.
He's had two surgeries, and he's had two knee surgeries
over the last year. He's got a left ankle injury

(20:34):
as well, so he's not clearly himself.

Speaker 8 (20:36):
He don't look right.

Speaker 9 (20:37):
Cam Jurgen's who's probably not going to play this week now,
is a knee injury. He had back surgery after the
Super Bowl, so and he admitted that he wasn't right
physically let's start the season. So he's been a little
bit off. They have a new right guard, Tyler Stein,
who was a tackle on college at Alabama. A right
tackle Lane Johnson. He'll be a Hall of Famer someday.

Speaker 8 (20:55):
You could say he's.

Speaker 9 (20:56):
Still very good in the run game, he's not quite
what he is. So if you add up the five together,
they've had a major drop off. It's it's kind of
amazing this team Leagles, when you brought them up that
they're five and two because Jalen Hurts had a great
second half last week against Minnesota, but he's not played
at Chickley High level. They can't run the ball to
save her life. Their defense is not close to what
it was last season when they're number one defense. But yeah,

(21:17):
they're five and two.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
It is crazy. But they were beaten badly by the
Giants weeks ago. Yeah, yeah, just fascinating pasting stuff. Okay,
what about the Bills. Yeah, the Bills recovered because their
defense suddenly was non existent.

Speaker 9 (21:36):
All right, so here's this story, Doe with the Bills. Right,
you got the superstar quarterback. That's not the problem. The
run game and James Cook is not the problem. Their
offensive line is fine. It's not the most talented line.
Their defense, first of all, they've had They've had a
problem with their past rush for years. This is nothing new.
That's why they brought in Joey Bosa. Didn't work with
Von Miller. Joey Bosa was cut by the Chargers. He's

(21:58):
not super old, but he's of injuries. At this point,
you probably would one Joey Boasted to be your third end,
probably not as a starter, but they have what they
have defensively in the secondary. They're not good enough a corner.
I mean, tre Davis Waite at this story, this point
of his career, you would rather.

Speaker 8 (22:15):
Him not starting, but he is.

Speaker 9 (22:17):
Christiop Benfert It's been a very good story opposite Hi
out of Villanova, who got his contract extension earlier this year.

Speaker 8 (22:23):
Nice player. They're not great at safety.

Speaker 9 (22:25):
It's it's and Matt Mulana, who's a weekside linepe are
probably one of the best coverage linebackers in football. He's
been hurt. He's a pectorial injury. He's been hurt a
lot in the recent years. So At Oliver was hurt
earlier with an ankle injury, the Larry Ogunjobi suspension.

Speaker 8 (22:42):
Michael hecked as well. They're back now.

Speaker 9 (22:45):
Hopefully those guys will help, but yeah, they're not great.
I mean and Doug One thing that I learned in
my training came to her which I had in August.
I always ask teams, okay, how do you see the
rest of the league, because.

Speaker 8 (22:55):
They know what's going on.

Speaker 9 (22:57):
The prevailing thought was, this is kind of an open
year for teams to make a round that normally aren't
in it.

Speaker 8 (23:02):
It's just not a great year.

Speaker 9 (23:04):
And that's there're no dominant There's no one even close
to being dominant like Philly was last season.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
No, not even not even close. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Adam Kaplan
our Fox Sports Radio NFL Insider is joining us. The
Miami thing. I mean, I think we know how it ends. Yeah, yeah,
uh but wow. Then Tua comes out yesterday. I don't

(23:30):
know if cap you heard this where he talked about
while why Wattle isn't getting the looks and he's like,
it's because I'm just too small. I can't see.

Speaker 8 (23:38):
I didn't, I didn't see those gets. I didn't. Actually,
so what exactly so you intimated that?

Speaker 1 (23:43):
Hey, guys, perfect, do you have that? You have that
cut for me real quick?

Speaker 8 (23:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Well, I'm sorry, it's a Ryan Smith. We'll get it
for us. Yeah. He he legitimately said, you know, I'm
not like I think. He said, I'm not the tallest
guy in the world.

Speaker 8 (24:00):
I can't see six.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
Yeah, and he might not be that big whatever.

Speaker 8 (24:05):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
But it didn't come across as like self deprecating and
playing it off. It came across like very very matter
of fact, and I mean this, this whole thing has
gone so bad in such a hurry. And then they're
gonna throw him back out there because not like there's
anybody behind him. No, I McDaniel doesn't save his job,

(24:28):
but is two of their next year.

Speaker 9 (24:30):
Well, here's here's the problem. So here's the problem in
trading him. Hey, you gotta want the player. He's got
a big injury history. You know about the concussions. Right,
all of his cash next year is fully guaranteed. The
the fifty five millions fully guaranteed. Okay, that's that's just
the way it is. You're you're you're not getting out
of the contract if you're Miami. Now it's Chris Greer
going to be there, the general manager who has never

(24:51):
really gotten right on the offensive line. He made the
big trade for Tyreek Kill, who may not play for them. Again,
Juris announciation said he'll be able to play next season,
but it's a question of well mimiking get out of
the contract fairly easily. So that might be Tyreek Hill's
last down that he had. Unfortunately the season for them
with his major injury. It's just to uh, to is
kind of like you like him if you really liked

(25:13):
him for the draft, Like he's very up and down
when he's on. When he gets over the ball quickly,
he's could be very good.

Speaker 1 (25:20):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (25:20):
But that was one, you know, the the justin Justin
Herbert decision. That's one that look, Herbert's a better passer now.
I know he has not been as good as maybe
the hype would would tell you. But when getting back
to Tuah, they're just an absolute mess as you set
it up offensive lines. Of problem defense is they're terrible
corner some injuries, but they don't have a lot of

(25:41):
good players on defense. It's just and and then they
made they they had some contract extensions which have not
worked out at all, which were mistakes. They're just a
very bad football team. It starts with too many bad
personnel decisions. The head coach looks beliguered and we had
a mercy firing. As one league sort of said with
Brian Callaghan, that means when everybody knows it has to happen,
they just do it for the sake of everybody. And unfortunately,

(26:03):
you know, I don't wish Mike McDaniel bad, but it's
looking pretty bad right now.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Yeah, it does not, it's awful. It just does not
look good. Uh, Raiders, Gino Smith, that thing has gone bad,
oh bad. In a hurry, I would like to hey,
Jay Sduke, would do you have my back in this one?
I called that one before everybody everybody else fight. I
was like, I've been watching him. He wasn't good in
Seattle and my expectation.

Speaker 8 (26:28):
We faded last year. Yeah, he faded he did.

Speaker 1 (26:32):
What What are I mean? Like? Crazier things have happened
than the Raiders keeping a coach for one year. But
Pete Carroll isn't under pressure, is he?

Speaker 8 (26:43):
No? No?

Speaker 9 (26:44):
But here's the problem, Okay, and why they haven't benched,
Gino Smith, I'll give you forty million reasons why? Yeah, okay,
forty million total cash that they own. They can't get
out of that.

Speaker 6 (26:53):
No.

Speaker 8 (26:53):
Next year.

Speaker 9 (26:54):
What they'll do is if they want to benching him,
and or it continues to be obviously that he needs
to be benched and won't be back next season.

Speaker 8 (27:00):
They other trade. It'll be tough to trade him.

Speaker 9 (27:02):
He's a twenty six point five million next season, but
they'll cut him before all his money becomes fully guaranteed
in the middle of March.

Speaker 8 (27:09):
So it's been a disaster. Now he's back with Pete.

Speaker 9 (27:11):
And you have to remember is that he started off
his career terribly with the Jets. He worked his way
up with the Seahawks as their back, then their starter,
where he became the most improved quarterback in the National
FOOTB League one year. It looked like a great story,
but it started last week. He was kind of moving
when he should move, and you were starting to wonder, Okay,
what's going on here. So the Raiders, because of Pete Carroll,
they wanted them. Okay, that's fine. They sign him to

(27:34):
a two year deal, but they can get out after
year one. But the problem is the money in your
won is so significant. It's just it's not working out.
And it's funny because if the sports books felt that
because of Pete Carroll, you've see him with Jim Harball
and other coaches who are older who come in and
they turn things around. This is a team that a
lot of people felt could make. They'd be like eight
or nine wins. They're not now. They did beat shockingly

(27:55):
the Patriots in Week one, and that that's stunned me.
But look at the Patriots since then, another team that
nobody got wrong.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
It's weak. It's week one, we exactly one can't.

Speaker 8 (28:04):
Wild Yeah, you just can't take it out. I'm with
you there, You're right, you can.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
Okay. What about the Jets? That was a weird one.
Like Woody Johnson comes out fully supports Aaron Glenn, uh,
but then says, hey, if our quarterback could just complete
a pass. But these are the same guys that signed
off on forty million dollars to Justin Fields.

Speaker 8 (28:26):
Yeah, Doug, here's the thing, and no owner. You know,
it's funny.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (28:30):
A Jet source told me that wood he had been
really good behind the scenes over the summer and he
and really when this new regime came in with Aaron
Glenn and so forth, he pledged himself to do things
the right way.

Speaker 8 (28:39):
But there's absolutely no reason for him.

Speaker 9 (28:40):
At this followners means to pipe off about Justin Fields, who,
by the way, not only this season is he making
twenty million ten million of his twenty million dollars next
seasons fully guaranteed, they'll have to pay him mat or
it's even if he signed somewhere else, we'll be on
the hook for ten million, no matter what. Stupid that
they did, a bad contract.

Speaker 8 (28:58):
They should have.

Speaker 9 (28:59):
Known better, just Fields. It has never been a consistent quarterback.
They're an absolute train racket. Now Glenn's going to make
it for the season. The questions will we make it
to you too? As much as they love him in
that building, when you're not competitive, sometimes you don't get
that second year.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
I know it, I know it. But the owner did
put all of his support. I mean that was pretty
obvious for this season.

Speaker 9 (29:22):
Though not we'll see. Well, look if they're one in
fifteen and it what are you? John said, I know
it'll be his call and you could see he could
say whatever he wants. But what he's also in social
media unfortunately, as Jetsir has told me, he looks.

Speaker 8 (29:36):
At that stuff that's out there. He shouldn't, but he does.
Telling you he does, you should not.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
This is the Doug Gotlib show. You're listening to Fox
Sports Radio, are we willing to admit that maybe Jerry
got it right with his coaching hire.

Speaker 9 (29:49):
Well, okay, here here's what I told. Okay, I have
no horse in the race, so to speak out. I've
met Schottenheimer, I've talked him before. I don't know him.
But let's be careful. Okay, let's be careful. Okay, they're
three to three and one. Now that that Packer game
they had was the best game of the year. That
was unbelievable. Like that game from the beginning end was great,
Unlike the Denver game where Denver didn't score thirty any
points through.

Speaker 8 (30:09):
Three quarters and scored thirty three, which is crazy.

Speaker 9 (30:11):
But the thing that I know about Shotty talking to the Seahawks,
so he comes in right, and you speaking of Russell Wilson,
he was brought in at coach Russell Wilson hard in
twenty twenty with the Seahawks, right, and he believes in
analytical data. He believes in throwing early and running late.
So Russell Wilson was phenomenal. Russell Wilson in twenty passing
touchdowns in eight games.

Speaker 10 (30:32):
He was.

Speaker 9 (30:34):
You extrapolated, he could have had an NFL record for
most touchdown passes in a season. But you Pete Carroll
took over. He said, enough of this, we got to
run the football. The rest is history. And then Shotty
got fired for the season. Now you fast forward to now,
I mean Dak Prescott is on fire. We don't give
out MVP awards after seven weeks. He looks great. Their
offense is unstopped. One don't forget they did a lot
of this without Ceedee Lamb. But their defense, Dug is

(30:57):
not competitive. No, it's embarrassing. How bad they're it's terrible, terrible.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
I get it. But but like you said, and by
the way, Dan Buyer said the same thing, people forget
how good he was in Seattle. I honestly think I
think it's as much as last name more than anything.
Because his dad, who was a great coach but didn't
win the playoffs. Sure, and then he's the Sun. People
think nepotism whatever, even though they're very different people style wise,

(31:23):
is something that damaged him. Hey, you're the best, cap,
Thanks for joining us. Look forward to talking next week.

Speaker 8 (31:28):
So good. Thank you.

Speaker 7 (31:29):

You were like wow, Wow, Wow. Let's get to Dampire
with the game.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
All right, Doug, the game on this Thursday.

Speaker 7 (32:39):
Is is I feel a draft lead.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
You Jason Stewart, Ryan Smith drafting today, not in that order.
I'll give you that in a second. The World Series
that you remember the most most memorable world series to.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
You Okay, what's the order?

Speaker 3 (32:58):
Jason picks first? Ryan a second, Doug your third, I'm fourth,
and then we reverse it for the second round. All right, Jason,
you're on the clock. It'd be easy for me to
pick the most recent one, but I'm gonna go back
to nineteen eighty eight led by Kurt Gibson and Oral
Hersheiser Mickey Hatcher, Dodgers over the A's the vaunt to

(33:21):
Day's in five games. I think he stole the pick
of the second overall pick? Is that true? Ryan Smith?
Were you about to take nineteen eighty eight number one?

Speaker 10 (33:33):
I was, but something popped in my head and I
cannot believe I forgot this. My late father, God rest
his soul, was also a Dodger fan. He actually converted
me to be a Dodger fan, and before he.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
Passed away, he transitioned.

Speaker 10 (33:48):
The Dodgers won the World Series, all right, really cool
in the bubble, and I got to share that moment
with my father, and that's that's something I will never forget.

Speaker 1 (34:00):
Big time.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
It's a good one.

Speaker 1 (34:01):
Yeah good, it's a real good pick.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
All right, Doug.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
Two thousand and two, I've been I moved to Southern California,
nineteen eighty one. My dad was a lifelong Mets fan,
so in eighty six I thought, for sure, Angels are
going to play the Mets. Right I was ten years old,
I sent into a little lottery. I had tickets for
Game one of the World Series and Donny Moore gets

(34:28):
up a home run ball rip and it doesn't work
out for the Angels. The Red Sox go on to
Bill Buckner have the ball go through his legs for
the Mets to win the World Series. Fast forward to
two thousand and two and the Angels get the World
Series against Barry Bonds, Dusty Baker and San Francisco Giants

(34:52):
Game seven. I also had a ticket, but I was
playing for my dad in just right about now, right,
And do you remember the those tour teams that they
used to because he used to be like Athletes in
Action and Marathon Oil or whatever. And then it started
being European professional teams and then it was former college players,

(35:12):
a lot of them on EA Sports teams. I played
on one of those as well, my dad's AU program.
He had relationships. We would play like nine games in
a year. So we were getting ready to play UCLA
and we had practice at Ocean View High School and
my dad Angels Game seven. He's like, you know the rules,
you want to play, you got to come to practice.

(35:33):
I was like, I've run these plays since I was
in eighth grade. Like I'm I think I'm good here.
So we missed some of the game, watched the end
of it at home. And to watch your hometown team,
a team you and as since has been obviously a
struggle win a world series was pretty amazing.

Speaker 4 (35:48):
Two thousand and two is the answer, John Lackey.

Speaker 1 (35:51):
Sure, Troy Percival right where he looked like I can't
really see where I'm throwing it right, and then he
just throw five are in there.

Speaker 3 (36:00):
Yeah, that was a great series, really was. I was
actually pulling for the Giants. I don't have any you know,
favoritism towards either team, but for some reason, I was
pulling for the Giants in that one, and they came
up short. Doug's Angels win it, all right. I got
two picks here. I remember when the Brewers made it
in nineteen eighty two. But what I really remember, and

(36:22):
this ties into gambling, is in nineteen eighty three, my
neighbor got our house in a numbers pool. So it
was Orioles Phillies in that World Series, and I remembered
it the next year when it was Tiger's Padres in
eighty four the numbers for the World Series. So I
am going to put the nineteen eighty three World Series
between the Orioles and Phillies just for that reason. You

(36:44):
know where you're like, Okay, I've got nine and six, right,
the game ends nine and six, you win the neighborhood pool.
Fitting today for a gambling day, And I'm going to
give you one that probably nobody remembers or wants to remember.
And oddly enough, it involves the Phillies again. But two
thousand and eight, because I covered that World Series between
the Rays and Phillies, and the game five that the

(37:07):
Phillies clinched was a called game. They called the game
in the sixth inning because of rain. They couldn't resume
it the next day because of rain in Philadelphia, so
we had to stick around in Philly, and then they
played it the day after that started the game in
the sixth inning, bottom of the sixth inning, and it
was the quicket. It was so odd, but it was
so fun. Two thousand and eight Phillies beat the Rays

(37:31):
in five games.

Speaker 4 (37:32):
But Dan, I thought it was always sunny in Philadelphia,
just not those days, not those days.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
Yeah, oh yeah, I'm gonna go the twenty eleven World Series, right.
The twy eleven World Series went seven games, Rangers Cardinals.
If you remember, Game six was as epic a World
Series game as you're ever gonna find. David Freeze not
once but twice on the two strikes on him, two

(37:57):
strikes on him. Say the day became the World Series
MVP and as powerful as as this, watch your hometown
team win a World series, to watch one of your friends,
Matt Holliday, watch him win a World Series and he
was hurt and get to play in game seven, kind
of screwed up in game six when he got hurt.
Pretty awesome stuff. Cardinals win the World Series twenty eleven,

(38:19):
that's my answer.

Speaker 3 (38:20):
All right, Ryan, real quick.

Speaker 10 (38:23):
When the Blue Jays went back to back against the
aga'st the Phillies, when Joe Carter hit that walk off
home run, and just I remember it because the look
of just pain and despair on the Philly fans and
the Philly players just make to this day make me
makes me laugh so I'll never forget that World Series.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
Jason Last twenty seventeen. Why are the Astros looking like
they know every pitch?

Speaker 8 (38:48):
Ten?

Speaker 4 (38:48):
And Kershaw is throwing in Game five in Houston twenty seventeen.

Speaker 8 (38:51):
You got a wrap, We.

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Got five stug out lap show here on Fox Sports,
Tred don't come, No gotta coming back Thursdays. Next throw back,
throw Back, throw Back, Sobek
