Speaker 2 (00:28):
Do you know what day it is today? Are you
familiar with day it is? Today? I always say, are
you familiar what day it is today? What day is it?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
It's Thursday?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Nope, wrong answer that it is Thursday? Though, I mean
you're technically correct. That wasn't the answer we're looking for.
Jase too, you know what, do you know what day
today is? No?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Nothing, I'm guessing it's Thursday. We gotta throwback Thursday.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
We do have. Don't call it throwback Thursday. Today is
game Day, suck us, that's right, Dame Day. College football
back Maya Monor Oklahoma State, Wisconsin Place Tonight boy C
takes on South Florida. Here's how you know your old school, right,
(01:19):
This is how you know you're a college football fan.
You've been doing this for a minute. Do you remember
when South Florida got all the way up to number
two in the rankings? This actually happened. Number two in
the rankings. I'm gonna go with somewhere along the lines
of fifteen seventeen years ago they were number two in
(01:41):
the rankings.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Two thousand and seven.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
There you go, how many years ago that seven, eight, seventeen,
eighteen years That was actually really good of me. Two
thousand and seven they got to number two in the rankings.
Lost at home, and Jim Levitt was the coach. By
the way, Jim Levitt got arrested was that yesterday the
day before.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
I think that's that's why it reminded a bunch of
people that they got up to number twos because he's
probably the news.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, you're like, hey, I know that now, I know
that name. Anyway, it is game day. That's that's the
And I actually I'll give credit to Chase too, because
I think he picked him out. In the teams that
are interesting last year, the most interesting teams for me,
Colorado was interesting. Oklahoma was Mike because in the SEC
(02:24):
and I don't think Oklahoma fans have any idea of
what they've actually gotten themselves into. But of the top
five most interesting teams this year, Colorado is Jase Douo
has them number one. I would say it's a great argument.
You can make their one of the top five. And
the reason is you have coach Prime, but you don't
(02:45):
have Travis Hunter and you don't have shad Or Sanders.
You don't have Shilough Sanders coach prime though he had
a this is interesting, let's discuss it. This from Yahoo.
One of the most talked about stories in the college
fall landscape over the last few years is how much
money players are making through NIL. While some argue that
(03:06):
players are getting their long deserved compensation for constantly putting
their body on the line for fans entertainment, others have
opined that NIL has reduced competitive balance in the sport. Recently,
Colorado head coach Dean Sanders proposed another way to incentivized
players by having them paid for both making and winning
the college football playoff tournament. I think that's great. I
(03:30):
think the NCAA tournament as well. You know, why not,
why not incentivize winning? I love it. All of these
contracts can be incentive latent, but keep in mind, yes,
the school does make more money when they make the
NCAA tournament, not so much money that you're going to
get a five hundred thousand dollars bonus or raise or whatever.
(03:51):
And if it was really nil, yeah, of course you
win a tournament, you should be able to get it
because your name, your profile should grow. But there's this
other side to it, or maybe two other sides to it.
First thing is that most the pendulum has swung to
(04:11):
where it is really, really, really pro player. If a
player doesn't like the school, the player can put themselves
in the portal. You still have to be liked by
another school. We signed a player yesterday yesterday. Now he's
we haven't announced yet. He's a foreign player. I believe
(04:34):
the PaperWorks in so I could technically talk about him,
but until I get an email saying he's clear, I'm
not going to because I'm excited about coaching him. But
the fact is that because he's a foreign player, and
because of the way contracts were written, he could essentially
have a great first half of the season and then
(04:55):
sign another pro contract back where he came from, make
more money and leave our team, and we have no recourse.
Could we go out and get another player. We could,
but again it's way less than ideal to do it then,
way less than ideal. So should you incentivize winning? Yeah,
why not? Why not we incentivize grades at our school.
(05:18):
You get good grades, get over three to zero, you
get a bonus everybody across the board. But I love
that idea. I would love an incentive laden contract, you know,
an incentive laden contract, and maybe that's what we get
to Those are the perfect contracts. By most people's estimation.
(05:39):
You achieve, you get paid. Simple doesn't mean you have
no compensation. But I think it's a great idea because
no one has any problem paying more money if you're
winning more games. It's interesting, like Dion has so many
good thoughts and ideas, and there's so many parts about
(06:00):
what he teaches, which are the good way, the good thing.
My ability to be critical of Dion Sanders was merely
in how his son treated other people. Him being a
quarterback is just different. That was it. You know, we've
had the showboat cornerback before, the showboat wide receiver before.
We haven't had that from quarterback and or on a
(06:25):
more limited scale, and there's a reason for that. You're
supposed to be getting along with everybody. But as we try,
here's my idea for bonus compensation. I love the idea,
but you should only be able to collect that bonus
if you come back for the next season. Otherwise you're
using the fact that you won that championship or you
(06:48):
won whatever thing that is, and that's going to help
you get more money at your next school. Jase two
poke holes in my argument that incentive latent deals are good,
maybe not totally realistic. Or you still have a base,
but you have to collect the money the next year.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah, so you got to stick around to collect it.
I like the idea. I don't know how that falls
in the by laws of this current wild West, where
there doesn't seem to be any bylaws. And I also
think that there's something in there about the money being fungible,
like Dion Sanders says, you know you should get bonuses,
(07:29):
and then your first thought is, well, then all the
teams that typically make the playoffs are going to get
that much bigger an advantage in recruiting because they could
say we're going to make the playoffs and you'll get
this much money.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
But they already have that advantage, and they already have
that advantage.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Finance true and money's fungible. In other words, if I'm
I don't know Texas Tech, and I go to a
kid who wants to kind of play near home, you
could be like, well, whatever that playoff, that playoff bonus
was that you were going to get Texas. We'll just
make up for it in the next and I ohdill.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Right, Okay, yeah, I mean you can do all kinds
of bonuses, though, I mean part of it is, you
know Texas Tech right now, they're spending a bunch They're
spending a ton of money, But wouldn't it be better
to spend a bunch of money if you thought you
were actually gonna win. They're not spending money to lose.
(08:23):
I don't know. I think it's a fantastic idea. I
think the idea of having bonuses is smart. We have
bonuses in but they're only for academics. I see nothing
in the in having a bonus over wins and losses,
because ultimately, if you win, that's the idea of the
entire thing. I think that once you get into true
performance based bonuses and minutes and yards and stats, I
(08:46):
think that can be really hard because look, schools will
try and save money. They just will.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
They will be sure to catch the live edition of

(09:29):
we get an update. But I did one. Top of
this story, Don Staley, who's won national championship at South Carolina,
won a couple in out South Carolina, was on the
Post Moves podcast and she talked about being interviewed by
the next this offseason. Kind of interesting, right, here's Don
Staley discussing something which had been announced had been announced,
(09:52):
but this is what it was like from her perspective.
Speaker 6 (09:55):
I would have had to do it, not just for me,
It's for women for just to break open that I
would have to end. It's the New York Knicks and
I'm from Philly, but it's the freaking New York Knicks.
How if you hired me as the first female coach
in the w n b A, how would it impact
your daily job? Because it would because you're gonna be
(10:18):
asked questions that you don't have to be asked if
you hire a male coach. There's gonna be the media,
that's gonna be all this stuff that you're gonna have
to deal with that you you didn't have to deal
with and you don't have to deal with when you
when you.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Hire a mail.
Speaker 6 (10:33):
And then that that got them to thinking maybe she's right,
and then I felt I felt the energy change after that.
So I shot myself in the in the foot by
being a lea, being inquisitive and asking all this garment questions.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
M that's what did it. That's what did it. She
talked herself out of the job because of it. It
would be really hard, not impossible, really hard. And I
think one of the things is that in the NBA,
(11:09):
you have to have the respect of the room to win.
To have the respect of the room, you have to
have one, right, so she's one. But I just would
tell you I don't think she would be viewed anywhere
near the same. Here's the other thing about don Staley. Okay,
(11:30):
she is not the classic players coach. It is about
Don Staley. She is very good, but it is about
Don Stay And the way which she speaks to her
players is like everybody likes say, well, she's old school,
Like she's not. This is not hey, let's get a
(11:52):
participation trophy and everybody feel good about it. That's not
how she's wired. I don't think she works at all
in the NBA at all, because women's basketball, just like
the trash talk, is like a caricature of men's basketball.
It's like way over the top like guys talk trash,
but not to the level of the demonstrativeness of the
(12:15):
women's game. Coaching is much the same, where it's almost
a throwback to the eighties where the game is simply
about the coaches and their outfits and what they're saying
and doing, and everything is about their word. In college coaching,
everything's about the coach. Women's basketball, especially in the NBA,
(12:36):
it's the least important person as the coach and I
don't know how she would handle it. I don't think
it'd go over well, and it's not her personality to
be submissive in any way. I don't think it works.
Do I think there'd be more media because she's a
first woman. Yeah, initially, but after that then you're judged
(12:59):
really based upon your competency. So the first month or
two would be weird and there'd be some interesting interactions,
but after that, I don't think anybody care. I just
think they wanted to win games, and if you didn't
win games, then you'd be out. Then you'd be out.
For over forty years, Tyrak has been helping customers find
(13:20):
the right tires for how what where they drive should
pass the free back by free road as protection options.
With mobile installation, Tyrak talk how the way tire buying
should be. Here's our play of the day, brought to
you by the Mariners, brought you from the Mariners Radio Network.
Speaker 7 (13:33):
Swinging the ground ball of third, Chino scoops it up,
toss across and the ball game is over. The Mariners
hang on and win it a final score of four
to three. The same afternoon and the series against the Padres.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Uh Yeah gets the Padres. There you go. So I
think Jase Do put that on there for one specific reason.
I just do. And it wasn't that he wanted to
celebrate the Mariners win. Right, It's because Jay s Douw
is fired up against anybody who could beat the Padres. Okay, well,
(14:12):
we're gonna have Canel in a couple minutes. Okay, Danny
Canell joined us a couple minus. We don't call it
a throwback Thursday. Top of next hour. Darren Ravel is
going to join us next hour. Hey, can I get
that sound of Chris Greer? I thought you brought up
a great, great point in the in the podcast. By
(14:34):
the way, you can download our podcast podcast only end
of the show or hour and a half from now,
where Jase dou you were talking about the the viciousness
of the fan now that betting has become legal in
so many states. All right, let's talk about in a second.
(14:56):
Here's Chris Greer. He's the GM of the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 8 (15:00):
I really have had many interactions with fans. No when
I see guys are like hey, and if I'm out,
people have always been respectful and nice and they just
say hey, you know, keep going appreciate you, and so
it's been no The guys to my face have been nice.
I know there's people that are upset, but that's that's
any job. And if I was comfortable and saying I
(15:21):
felt great about what things are, then I'm because I'm
not being realistic about where we are as a team
and where things are going. So after last season, I'm
frustrated like they are that we didn't win enough games
last year. I understand it. Like I said, I don't
take things person but when I'm out, people have been generally,
you know, very positive and stuff to me. But I
know there's guys. I mean, I've gotten some colorful emails
(15:45):
from a couple of people, including hoping my kids die
of cancer, which is a fun one. I was like,
there you go. So that's why I don't take things
very personal or real because other people have other issues
and stuff in life.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
I mean, well, wishing people as kids die of cancer.
I just look, I get it. When you lose some money,
you're bitter and you want to talk trash to somebody.
You want to let people hear it. I have. If
you go to my ig dms like you'll get people
all the time. They'll say things like whatever you want
to end if that makes you feel better. But is
(16:21):
there a can we all agree that's not a that
should not be normalized, We should not be okay, like
just I don't know. I would never utter that out loud,
even as a joke, for fear of karmap reparations. Right.
But but Jason, I thought you made a great point
(16:41):
earlier today where you were talking about, look that the
difference here is in the gambling.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Yeah, that's the thing. Right, So it's a combination of
social media people feeling empowered to say whatever they want,
and then you add this legalized into the mix, where
people have more access to gamble on games, people have
more chances to lose games because of people's decisions, and
(17:10):
they have access to those people on social media. I
would venture to say, in the history of our careers
that the tension between fans and team members has never
been worse.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Fans and team members has never been worse than right now.
Speaker 9 (17:32):
And I would also add to Jason's thought Doug, that
this trickles down to lower level sports more than ever before,
when it was never this way in a previous generation.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
No doubt, you know, we can say that amateurism. Some
people thought it was a sham altogether, or whatever. You
can say whatever you want about amateurism, but there was
always something about college kids where they were sort of
off limits, right. I mean, I've run into this. There
was a player who played in nebrask He was a
(18:06):
little point guard and they were playing Kansas and I
said he was acting like a punk right now. And
I was very specific with what I said, because acting
like does not mean you're you are a punk. It
means you're acting like something that you're not. Anyway, there
was all this pushback. My good friend Doc Sadler was
(18:27):
the coach at the time, and I was the world's
worth human being for a couple of days. But okay,
but that energy is like the pushback from fans and
from administrators was, hey, he's a college kid. And I
was like, well, I didn't call him a punk. I
(18:48):
said he was acting like a punk because he was
trying to start a fight.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
There's a difference there, There's a big there's.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
A massive difference there. But again, the pushback wasn't as
much over semantics for it should been. Was more like, hey,
this is a college kid. Now, we don't have that
same what's that I'm looking for? Amount of grace? We
have no grace about us. They're expected to perform and
they're not. They're not going to. I hate to bring
it to you. Whatever you think about NFL football, Jason especially,
(19:17):
who constantly tells us, and he's right, that the product
isn't as good as you think it is. As a
matter of fact, in some ways, it's very disappointing. Wait
till you watch college football. Not only are the players
not as good as the pros, because well that's why
they're in college and they're younger, but now they're practicing
like fifteen times with the team and then playing for
them and then switching teams the next year. I just
(19:39):
prepare yourself for sloppy football. Sloppy football. The only good
part about the early season sloppy football is early season
games don't matter as much as they used to because
we do have a college football playoff. With that, we
welcome in Danny Cannell. Of course, you know DK cover
(20:00):
in college football in the NFL for years. He's a
former starting quarterback at Florida State, of course starter in
the National Football League. He joins US up a half
a bet online. Check got bet online dot ag for
updated college fotball playoff win totals, Conference Heisman and college
football one week one lines. Let's go near and dear
to our hearts. Okay, let's talk about our alma maters,
(20:21):
both of very disappointing seasons, very displayed. Now. Florida State
was humming along, then their quarterback gets hurt. Then they
get left out of the college football playoff two years
ago and the roof collapse. Where are they this year?
Speaker 10 (20:37):
Man? I would love to sit here and say, I
guarantee you they're gonna get better, and I would hope
they can at least double their win total, but even
that might find Mike Norvel looking for work. If they
only got the four wins. You know, the win total
is in seven and a half, and it's really tight
number because I do think that's probably around their beat,
around where they'll be.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
You know.
Speaker 10 (20:57):
And it starts off and out with Alabama going to
tallahaf See, a place I'm actually headed to right now.
I'm heading up for the weekend to do some work
with them with CBS Sports HQ. But it's the great unknown,
and Mike Norvell has once again gone to the portal.
He's boosted up, he's got a couple of transfer wide receivers,
he's got a couple transfer offensive lineman, and he's got
the transfer quarterback from Boston College, Thomas Costellanos, to pair
(21:21):
with Gus Malson, who you know he and But here's
the thing that concerns me, Doug. I've heard a lot
of times, oh, this is the perfect quarterback for a
Gus Malson offense, and it doesn't always work out the
way everybody wants it to. So I'm a little bit
nervous about that pairing. But this feels like I mean,
if they're at seven and five, which is just under
their win total, it's going to get really uncomfortable around
Tallahassee because in a normal situation, I think most most years,
(21:45):
Florida State would have fired a coach after a two
win season. But he just signed the contract extension because
of that perfect season you mentioned, and his buyout was
over fifty million dollars. In Florida State doesn't have the luxury.
He's just been able to cut a check like that
and it only drops to forty million after this year.
So even if it's seven and five, I think get
end comfortable. But I think he gets one more year
and if he's eight and four, I at least think
(22:06):
the fan base will buy in a little bit more.
They'll see some progress made the right direction. You kind
of hope you can stable the ship a little bit.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
How how has it gotten so? How do you get
so bad so quickly? Like how do you go from
undefeated to winning two games? So?
Speaker 10 (22:23):
I think there's really only one explanation. You lost the
locker room and you had guys quit on you because
that team was too talented on paper. I mean, they
were a trendy pick to win the ACC again the
next year that they missed on the quarterback. You know,
dj U Junglay was the quarterback that was pretty polarizing
coming in. There were some skeptics on him, myself included
I didn't think he was great, but I also didn't
(22:44):
think it would drop out, like the floor dropped out
from there. And this is kind of I think a
unique thing in today's era when you live in the
transfer portal, which Florida State kind of has. They haven't
recruited as well as they've hit the portal. If you
if you have guys that you're kind of hired mercenary
to come in just for one year and you know,
help you accomplish your goals the minute you fall shore them.
(23:05):
Like those players that transferred in last season, they thought
they were going to be competing for an a SEC
championship and a national title potentially, just like the season before.
But once that kind of falls off and you fall
by the wayside and those goals are unachievable, which they
were pretty much after four or five weeks in the
season last year, then it turns into what I experienced
in the NFL. And that's when guys just start playing
(23:26):
for a paycheck and they start going through the motions
and as long as my check clears, I'm good. Gone
are the days of you know, playing for pride and
university and making sure your classmates, Like I don't know
how it was for you, Doug in college, but like
by the class of ninety two, that was our guys,
Like and we all came in together, We have a
lot of pride in our class. What would we accomplish
all together? Well, today's game, half the class is transferred out,
(23:49):
like most of the guys are transferred, so they don't
really care about school history or playing with guys they
came in as freshmen with because a lot of them
only played together for eight months. So I think in
a very transfer port class. The guys quit on Mike
novel at the end of the season.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Stell gott Leap show here on Fox Sports Radio going
to be interesting. Oklahoma State Miama matter similarly disappointing season.
They tried to get rid of Gundy. He had a
rollover contract, so they got out of the rollover contract days.
But now all of a sudden, it's sort of win
or else. I don't I still don't know if they
have the money to buy him out. But you know,
(24:24):
they went out in the market, spent a lot of
money and they have sixty new players they played tonight.
Speaker 10 (24:30):
That's unbelievable. Yeah, I mean, it's it's the worst season
since his first year. I mean, Mike Gundy has been
just churning out winners for them, you know, almost his
entire career, and this really felt like an anomaly. But
you do wonder, you know, in a new era the
players respawning the same way. I am a huge fan
of Mike Gundy. I think the guy can flat out coach.
(24:51):
I love his ties at the university, the fact that
he played there, and but again another team that last
year it was really hard to predict because they had
Ali Gordon coming back, they have a lot of veteran
offensive linemen coming back, and then just the rails came off,
so you wonder, like, culturally, what's happening. And then as
you mentioned, some of those questions started to come in,
are you going to retire? You're going to hang it up?
And you know, he gets some chuckles and said, my
(25:12):
wife won't let me, and it's all good. But if
there's another rough season, I do wonder how that unfolds.
But I have a hard time thinking they're going to
be as bad as last year. And in a wide
open Big twelve, I'm going to trust the coach that's
kind of been there and done it and knows how
to win in that league. A little bit concerned about
question marks. Damee Flores was expected to be the starter.
Hass Haney, that got, you know, younger player they transferred in.
(25:35):
He's a red shirt freshman. He's getting a nod, so
kind of curious. But a guy who I've trusted for
a long time with quarterbacks and quarterback development. Gundhy. I'm
gonna trust him with that decision as long as they're
not doing the hockey line change. Did it a couple
of years ago? Remember that they played like four different
quarterbacks and it was absolutely wild. Yeah, three different quarterbacks
and they were shuttling in every other series and it
was just kind of wild. They need to, you know,
(25:56):
find some stability at that position, and I feel like
they should be able to compete in a wide open
Big twelve.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of Danny Canell. I know you always tweak the SEC,
but the SEC has tons of money, lots of good football.
Calen de Boor, that's a hard deal. That's a hard deal, right.
I mean I would have had him in the playoff
last year, but they don't make the playoff. Now he's
(26:24):
in year two. How realistic is it to think that
he can get this team to the playoff where people
can allow him to breathe as head coach.
Speaker 10 (26:33):
I think it's pretty realistic, Doug. I actually picked him
to win the SEC. I think Kaylen de Boor is
an outstanding coach. Like I don't think you forget how
to coach. But I do think there was a transition
period because you know, Nick Saban greatest coach we've seen
in college football. He's a totally different style of coach.
I mean, first of all, he's a defensive minding coach.
He's no nonsense. You know, he's very rigid with the
(26:56):
media when he was a coach. And then Kaylin de
Boor is an offensive mine who's as friendly as against
with the media, a little bit more player friendly, and
in that transition period, I do think the players took
advantage of them. You know, some of the reports coming
out there, players you know, they were saying, hey, we
got to stop being late to practice, which I guarantee
you they were never late to practice with Nick Saban there.
They never had a letdown game the way they did
(27:18):
last season. After they beat Georgia, they start four to oh,
they beat Georgia, it looks like they're going back to
the title and they lose to Vanderbilt. You know, as
a twenty eight point favorite like that was super shocking
to watch that unfold. Those types of things didn't happen
during the saving air because he was so rigid and
tight and held those players to such a high standard.
I think now that the players are more used to
Kalen de Borre's coaching style, and he's more used to
(27:41):
the players, and they're kind of acclimating together, I think
that'll help smooth that transition. So I expect them to
be a lot better. There is a massive question mark, though,
and it's Ty Simpson, their new quarterback. He hasn't been
able to win the starting job there, but he stayed,
he's been in the system. He brings Ryan Grubbed, his
offensive coordinator that was with him at Washington two years ago.
He's moving to Tuscaloose to helped him within that offense,
(28:03):
which I really do think will aid Kayln de Borr offensively.
And as much as you know Jalen Milroe had a
pretty good season last year, I don't think he was
the type of quarterback that Kaylen de Boor really wanted
to flourish with. I think Ty Simpson will fit his
Simpson system better as long as he goes through the
reeds and like makes the right progressions and doesn't play
like a first year starter, which is a lot to
ask for him. But the reason I like him is
(28:25):
they probably have the best offensive and defensive line in
the country, but on both sides of the ball, I
don't know. I'm sure you're familiar with Bruce Feldman. Is
the Freaks list. They have more than anybody. They've got
six players on that Freaks List, you know, a couple
of them on the offensive line. They're all over the field.
They're still a pretty full coverboard that Kaylen de Boor inherited.
A lot of those guys are have still been there.
(28:45):
So I think they're going to take a big step
forward this year.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
LSU Clemson Saturday Night.
Speaker 10 (28:49):
You like, I like Clemson. I trust them a little
bit more. The one thing, even when I say that, though,
I'm like, they were zero and three against the SEC
last year. You know, they lost to South Caro Line
at home. They lost to Georgia at the first game
of the year and it was ugly, and they lost
to Texas in the playoffs. But I was actually encouraged
the way they played against Texas. I thought they played
them pretty tough. Score was a little bit misleading. Texas
(29:11):
scored a late touchdown to kind of push it out
of range. I'm a believer in Kid Klubnick. I'm a
believer in their offensive line and I'm concerned that LSU
is circling in four new offensive linemen around Garrett Nusmeyer,
who is about as much of a pocket passer as
you'll see in today's game. Like most guys are mobile,
they run around, he's sort of traditional on the road,
(29:33):
crowd noise gets involved. I think that could really impact
their ability to protect Garrett Nussmeyer. So I like Clemson.
I'm laying the three and a half. I like him
to win. Watch out their receiving core. They have three
wide receivers who are as good as anybody in the country.
I think they have their way. I haven't winning by
probably six or seven. I'm not saying they blow them out,
but I think they do cover the spread.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
Okay, let me ask you. At Texas and Ohio State,
we've only heard one person be critical of Archbanning. You
think of Archbanding the quarterback as of today, now potential?
What is he today?
Speaker 10 (30:05):
I think he's a typical first year starter, you know.
I mean, we've seen so many five star quarterbacks come
in and struggle. You know, some of them figured out,
some of them, don't you know. Trevor Lawrence was a
kid who stepped in at Cleinston stepped into the role,
and he won the national championship his first year. We've
seen others who don't even get to start at the
school they belong to, and they end up transferred out
(30:25):
and transfer three times as five stars and still don't,
you know, meet their potential. I do think he's good.
I think they'll like, there'll be a pretty solid floor,
but I do think it'll be a bumpy ride like
the people. The thing that's kind of driven me nuts
is even Texas fans are like, oh, we finally got
rid of quinn Ewers, so we can have this massive upgrade.
And while I do think the ceiling is higher, quinn
(30:46):
Ewers had some great games in tough situations. Last year,
he went into Michigan, had a phenomenal game, a couple
of touchdown passes leads him to victory. Two years ago,
he went into Tuscaloosa against Nick Saban, threw three touchdown
one on the road. Last year in the playoffs against
Arizona State, they had a fourth down to save the season,
to force it to overtime, he converts with a big
(31:09):
touchdown pass. Quin Yours I think has been cast aside
as some sort of scrub. He was really good for Texas,
and I just I'm curious if arts Manning his first
year can come through with those type of plays. I
think eventually they'll come, but I do think it can
be a little bit up and down for him, just
like it is for every other starting quarterback for the
first time.
Speaker 2 (31:27):

Speaker 2 (32:33):
Ilo, what's the game today, my friend?
Speaker 9 (32:35):
All right, we're gonna bring you all in from the cold.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
I feel a draft.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
I feel a draft.
Speaker 9 (32:45):
On the topic of today's draft, what is the one
matchup you're looking forward to the most this weekend in
college football? We'll each get two picks, Doug. You've got
the number one pick this time Iowa. Sam is the
number two pick. Isaac gets the third pick. By the way,
as long as I've been participating in these I've never
(33:06):
gotten the number one pick. That is a national outrage.
Number four Jason stored and then back around again to Jason, myself, Sam,
and Doug. So with the first pick in this draft, Doug,
which matchup in college football this weekend? Are you looking
for the most?
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Too?
Speaker 2 (33:25):
This is a trick question.
Speaker 5 (33:27):
How gonna be a trick.
Speaker 9 (33:27):
Question if you're number one unless you're gonna pick the
tilt between Bucknell and Air Force.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Ah, you got me?
Speaker 3 (33:34):
Yeah, Okay, that.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Fruits hanging so low, it's on the ground, I mean
it's right, it's ready. So it fell off the tree.
It's it's just picking.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Up almost feel like we should do like, okay, remove
textas text.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
We should take that outther.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
And it's it's it's a morning, nine am game for
us and man right off the bat, let's go.
Speaker 10 (33:54):
All right.
Speaker 9 (33:55):
So the next pick goes to please don't say the
you of Albany mass up, but we'll see go ahead.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
No, no, I don't take that.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
I will watch it. Okay, No, I'm actually gonna go
with There's a lot of great matchups this weekend, but
I'm gonna go with one where I think there's two
coaches with the heat of the spotlight is on them.
I'm gonna take Bama at Florida State. We have a
Klin de Boor year two, a lot to prove, and
then Mike Norvelle still at Florida State. I think he's
a great coach, but he's got to have a he's
(34:27):
got to have a bounce back here. So I'm gonna
take Bama at Florida State.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
All right.
Speaker 9 (34:32):
From the number three pick here, it's probably shouldn't be
this high, but I'm actually gonna go for the debut
of Nico Iamalayava at UCLA.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
What's that you said?
Speaker 9 (34:42):
Who is Nico Iamalayava, not to be confused with former
college football quarterback dj Uyunglala.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Yeah, take that all right.
Speaker 9 (34:53):
So UCLA is gonna be hosting Utah, So it's just
gonna be interesting to see if they hit the ground
running with that him individually. The problem is, as is
one of my complaints, it starts at eight pm Pacific
time eleven pm on the East Coast, and no college
football game should start at eight pm, which also means
(35:14):
a kickoff of eight ten, and if the previous game
goes long, the kickoff should be at eight fifteen.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
End of rant.
Speaker 9 (35:19):
With the next pick, we go to Jason.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Holds that game used to be a PAC twelve matchup, Yes, correct,
and then before that it wasn't a Pac twelve matchup.
Now it's a matchup of the Big twelve verse Big ten.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Is that correct?
Speaker 4 (35:32):
Utah is in the Big twelve now right?
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (35:34):
Yes, there you go? All right. I am pumped. I
can't believe you guys left these two matchups for me.
I think it's a delinquency on your part to not
prioritize these well enough, I'm going to go with the
fourth pick, Notre Dame at Miami. I think Carson Beck
reportedly horrible boyfriend, but he I guess he's a pretty
(35:56):
good quarterback. We'll see what happens to his play now
that the Cavender twin is not in his bed literally.
And then for the fifth overall pick, I've got a
couple of Southern teams only down in the South. LSU
plays Clemson in the best team against the fourth in
(36:20):
the AM. I want to see how this Clemson team does,
as it has secured a lot of its players from
wash here, if I if I've read correctly. So those
are my two picks. Thank you guys for leaving those
to me.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
You're welcome.
Speaker 9 (36:35):
Yeah, I'm just kicking myself, all right. Oh, hits back
around to me, all right.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
You know what.
Speaker 9 (36:40):
It's not like I'm gonna get in trouble or egg
on my face or anybody's gonna remember. So there's only
an upside. But I'm picking my upset special. Believe it
or don't. New Mexico under incoming head coach Jason Eck.
They're gonna get fourteenth ranked the Michigan Eck at the
Big House, the Wolverines. I like the cheekiness of New
(37:03):
Mexico recently, some of the stuff they've done on social media.
I know it's an inside thing, but putting their depth
chart as characters from Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise and Tom
Hanks movies, I'm calling it New Mexico will upset fourteenth
ranked Michigan. It's not gonna happen, and nobody will care,
(37:23):
but I will collect big time if the miracle occurs.
All Right, I've had enough stand back to you.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
What the eck?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Yeah, what the heck? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (37:32):
All right, guys, no one's gonna not many, I should say,
no one. Not many people are gonna watch this game.
But it's interesting. Caught my eye. Northwestern on the road
at Tulane two Lane's a favorite. You don't see a
lot of Big ten teams going on the road to
play a lower conference opponent, So to uh Northwestern, who
plays in a small, tiny, little uh temporary stadium on
Lake Michigan, is going on the road to New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
So what are the games so far? Is selected? Right?
You have Texas, Ohio State, you have Florida State, Alabama,
you have Clemson, LSU, you have what else?
Speaker 4 (38:06):
You still have one more pick, Doug, I know I have.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
One more pick.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
Run out of time.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
I'm not run out of time. I can't believe nobody
said Virginia tech out South Carolina quickly. South Carolina is
coached by Frank Beamer's son Shane and expect to have
a huge year. Hokies disappointing. Let's let's see all right,
So Doug Gottaby show coming up next. Don't call it throwback.
