Speaker 2 (00:08):
It's game time. It is Manzi Milanios. Not the game
time that you're used to. But for the next four hours,
we are gonna have some fun. I've got some New
Year's resolutions. Plus we have to nail down what our
top NFL story is of twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
You confuse me for a hot second because I really
don't know what day it is. We're in that weird
limbo of time. So when you said game time, I
was like, is it Thursday?

Speaker 4 (00:31):
Is there is? I was so thrown off.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I think the birthday boy Lebron James would.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Say, Tacco tuday eliscom n.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Not the only birthday boy today. Happy Birthday Tiger Woods.
Birthday Tiger the Big five oz for Tiger Woods, which
has me emotional even though he's a year older than me.
A lot of things to get to As the road
to Milan runs through Saint Louis, c Elia Mallin and
Alyssa lou and Amber Glenn compete at the twenty twenty
six priviagen Us Figure Skating Championships January seventh through the

(01:03):
eleventh be there as the twenty twenty six US Olympic
Figure Skating team is named live tickets at US Figure
Skating dot Org. Rams and Falcons felt like a throwaway game.
Entering it, it was anything but at the end playoff
implications as the Rams now in that sixth spot in
the NFC, the Falcons could have an effect on what

(01:24):
happens with the NFC South. Now if they keep on
winning and they win in the final week, could have
an effect on the Panthers and Buccaneers because they would
be a part of a tiebreaker if there was a
three way tie. But we're talking about the game within
the game, Manci and that are and that is a
play that was called incompletes on a punkin Nakua pass

(01:46):
and another play that was called incomplete on a pass
to two at Well that was considered possibly interference. And
that's where I want to start because last night Joe
buck Troy, the ESPN crew, many on social media felt
that in one of the final passes of the game,

(02:07):
throwing deep to two two at Well, that pass interference
should have been called. John Perry, the ESPN referee that
is in the booth with them said as much that
that is that is past interference. That is past interference
last night in Atlanta. And I know, Maazi, that Troy
Aikman and John Perry and all these people have more

(02:29):
qualifications when it comes to football. Oh is Russell York.
I'm sorry, Russell Yorke gave it to the wrong guy.
I know they have more qualifications than what I do.
But that wasn't pass interference last night in Atlanta. It
was not. So whether it is Russell York or John
Perry or Troy Aikman or Joe Bucker or whoever or
Uncle Buck, doesn't matter. It was not pass interference.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Listen, I.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
I get sit here and say I agree with you,
but I don't. I thought it was past interference. I
thought he prevented him from catching the ball holding his
arm down.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Now do I care?

Speaker 5 (03:05):
Not?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Really, I'm not a RAMS fan, you know what I mean.
I've seen the NFL miss more egregious calls. I've also
seen the NFL call pass interference on less than what
happened with two Tuo out. Well, I've seen both sides
of the coin. But at the same time, even though
I was like, that's past interference. In the middle of

(03:26):
the game. The boyfriend says, yeah, but you don't call
that right now, and I say, you're right, you're right,
you don't call that right now, because I would complain
if somebody made a, you know, a game changing call
against my team at the very end of the game,
I would be upset. So I was like, you're right,
You're right, I would be upset. But that was past interference.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
This is how it sounded last night in Atlanta, late
in the game between the Rams and Falcons.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
Watch the left arm of that well and the grab here.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Not allowing his arm to.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
Go up to make the catch. That's a misscall. And
that's a good point, Joe. I mean that first arm
it's hand fighting. But the second time he holds them
to the left arm down right when he's trying to
make the catch, that's a pass interference.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
And I think that your boyfriend is one hundred percent
correct in this scenario. Here's what the Rams were doing.
So last night, whether people realize it or not, the
Rams did not have a lot to play for. It's
actually why I think they were down twenty one to nothing.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
They could have.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Also, sorry, I forgot to say when you were saying
the things that they were playing for. They do have
an NFL pick that could have been top ten if
they would have actually beat the Falcons. Now it's moved up,
like I think, to the twelfth pick, but they were
also playing for that.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Sure that would have helped their cause with a win,
But to think that they had a chance to the
number one overall seed, they didn't. You don't know who
you're gonna play. You can't sit there and say five
or six when you're not necessarily sure on who's going
to be two or three with the matchup. The loss
would hurt them for sure, But in the grand scheme
of things, the prize for the Rams would have been

(05:01):
the number one overall seed. And since the Seahawks and
forty nine ers one on Sunday, there wasn't as much
urgency for the Rams in that game. And you know
how come I know this is because they were just
chucking the ball down the field. If they won it, great,
if they didn't win it great in that specific pass
in that specific instance to to two at well, if

(05:24):
you are trying, if you are playing in a game, Mancy,
with sixteen seconds left, and you're at the thirty five
yard line. What are you normally trying to do in
a three point game? Tye it, yes, kick a field goal.
By the way, great job, because I hate pop quizzes
and Moncy just passed with flying colors. You're trying to
kick a field goal. So what do the Rams do?

(05:45):
They chuck one down the field, which you know what
else it does takes up a lot of time.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
It does.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
So if you complete the pass and let's say two
to two at well catches the ball and is tackled
at the ten yard line.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
How much time is left to that point.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Nine seconds was when the play ends up ending. So
now you have nine seconds to run down the field
if he catches it, and go and spike the ball
for a game winning kick to get everybody. And I'm
talking about all the linemen. I'm not talking about one.
I'm talking about getting five NFL linemen to sprint entirely

(06:24):
down the field and get there in time to be
able to spike the football. It's not going to happen.
What you would do in that situation is you would
look to something in the middle of the field, go
up and spike it again with sixteen seconds left, so
you have nine seconds and then try to throw onto
the sidelines, kick the field goal and call it good.
That's what it is. That's how you would to tie

(06:46):
the game. Now, when they only had nine seconds left,
they had to throw an out route to Pokin Nakula.
The Rams had no interest in all of this. And
to your boyfriend Shawn's point, you don't make that call
at that point in the game, especially when the Rams
know what they're doing. You're not going to just throw
it up and hope to get a pass interference call.

(07:07):
And that's why it shouldn't be past interference. So when
we hear something of like, oh, that's pass interference, it's
the same stupid thing as there's holding on every play
of an NFL game. Every single play you could call holding,
every single play you could call pass interference. We don't
need to ruin. We don't need to review pass interference.
That ruined the game for the three weeks that it

(07:28):
was in place. It truly did. It was three weeks,
and then heck it was week two because it happened
in the Seahawks Steelers game. The Seahawks completely got benefited
from a call against Pittsburgh, and everybody's like, you know what,
this kind of whack. We shouldn't be calling past interference anymore.
It lasted two weeks in the National Football League. We
don't need to make changes. It was not past the
interference last night, not only because of the jostling, not

(07:49):
only because to tow out Well, also using the city,
the contact fact, all of that. It's the situation. It's
the situation that was going on. The ref's knew what
the Rams are trying to do. The only way if
two two at Well would have been tackled in that
spot for the Rams to get a stoppage of the
clock would be if there was a penalty. And so
they were trying to gain the system and the refs

(08:09):
knew it, and the refs weren't gonna let him get
away with it.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
So I, you know, again, agree with that you don't
make that call. I still think it was past interference.
But you know why they made that play.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
You kind of you hit on it that. That's like
it didn't seem like they really cared. It seemed like they.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Came out a little bit like relaxed, and then Atlanta
came on to put on a show.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
At home understandably so, and they try to catch up.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
But the other storyline surrounding Matthew Stafford is the MVP.
So he needed to make that throw, whether they want
or not, because how many interceptions did he have? Because
he affected my championship team. Thank you so much, Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 7 (08:48):
And so he was in that moment, was trying to
maybe everybody's like, no, no, no, let's show you what
Matthew Stafford can do without Pukinakua, because that was the
first thing that came out.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Oh, if Nagua doesn't have a good game, Matthew Stafford
doesn't either. And so at that moment, he's like, I
watch me throw this down to somebody else and we're
gonna catch it and it's gonna go right back up
to Oh okay, no, Matthew Stafford is not.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Do you think the Rams sabotaged it passed the pukakua
to strengthen his MVP case by throwing it the two
two out, Well.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
I'm trying to that's reason as to why you made
such a stupid decision.

Speaker 4 (09:22):
I'm trying to give.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Reason here, and that's enhancing his MVP odds, which during
the game.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
In the middle. That would have been a nice stup.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
You would have been like, oh, there's Matthew Stafford getting
them back in the conversation would have shifted again.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
But as I told you, honestly, like I don't even
care about all that. I care about the Pooka Akua catch, Dan,
that was a catch, for the sake of football. That
was a catch.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Moncey for some reason, thinks it's a catch when the
defender jostles the ball from the receiver so they don't
get it, so they don't have possession.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
For hot second.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
He did it, and then you got it again. But
then your other point was, but that's because the defender
was fighting, yes, was fighting him, Yes, so it should
be a catch.

Speaker 8 (10:08):
It was not it after for a hot second he
didn't have it, but to like keep his legs in
bound to catch the ball start falling for the sake
of football, that's a catch.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
It wasn't even close. There was there was a part.
There was a heck of an athletic feet by Poka
Nakua to make the catch with his body control, to
have his feet in to be able to catch the
ball with one hand, and I feel the defender helped
that as well, but no, absolutely not.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
He had it looked like it hit his form, which
is even more impressive than I thought.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
The defender's hand on top of the football would allowed
it to at least stay in the grasp of Puka
for the second, and then when the hand was being
pulled down he lost control for that second and then
it was then gain control. But his feet were not
in bounds at that time, and that's why it was
incomplete out of bounds. No two feet down.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
I don't even care.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
I just like, for the sake of football. If I'm
fighting to catch a ball and I do that, you
better give me the catch.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, Jason Stewart understands what you're saying.

Speaker 6 (11:09):
Jason, When you keep saying for the second football, I
think I know what you mean by this. Like I
came up as an umpire. I did some umpiring, you know,
little league and high school and stuff. And if there
was a banger at first base, say there was a
great play in the hole it short and a banger
at first I'm not going to I'm gonna reward the
good play.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
If I could go either way and you have an
amazing play there, I'm not going to be the kill
joy in that situation. I felt like the referees and
the people in New York, whoever's overseeing the replay or
the kill joy. It was an amazing catch that should
have been featured and celebrated ancality where he lost maybe

(11:51):
possession for a half second. Yes, you take away just
like the charger play that we brought up yesterday. Why
would you take away the joy of the stadium in
that moment at the end on a non consequential h
what was it hands to the face call? Yes, you
have to have more awareness if you're the referee crew
on the just the way the game is going, reward

(12:14):
the play down?

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Now, it was called to catch on the field, so
it was replay that overturned it. Yes, so the issue
would be with replay in that scenario.

Speaker 6 (12:24):
Yeah, whoever does.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Yeah like slowing down anything.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
You can make an argument for whatever side you want
to argue. I hate slowing it down. Stop slowing it down.
You know what I'm saying, Whatever you want to argue,
slowing it down helps either side. I Frame by frame,
Oh look we hear no possession next rame, Ana, I
think you guys are living in like a Bizarro football, Well,
I think you are.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
You guys want pass interference on a play that doesn't
warrant it, and then you want a catch on a
play where he didn't have his feet in bounds and
he was catching the football.

Speaker 6 (12:56):
I'm actually with you on the first one, Dan, and
you are. And yeah, so if if, if you want
the referees to be aware in that moment of what
the rams are trying to do, I also want the
referees to be aware in the moment of how great
a catch that was and reward the great catch as
opposed to be a killjoy.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
I'm just gonna see this one more time because you're
you're making it seem like that. It was so clearly
not a catch and it was like, no, he caught
it as he was fighting with somebody.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
There is a camera view where the football isn't touching
anybody after he is trying.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
To pay And how long in real time do you
think that is? Like if we're slowing it down, it
seems like a lot.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
But that that's how you right, that's a catch. He
has the ball, yes, but he doesn't complete the catch.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
How he's bringing the ball in with his arm.

Speaker 9 (13:44):
That is that is.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
Finishing the move.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Keep watching, keep watching.

Speaker 6 (13:47):
I am.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
He's trying to.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
He has his arm on his hand on his forearm,
and he's.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Still separated him from the football. So him, but he
didn't complete the catch because the catch wasn't completed, Isaac, Lohingkron,
watch the wait, Manzi's about to see the ball come
loose on this replay, and there is there, it goes,
there goes. He pulled his arm away. That's a good second.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
But then it was still with him and when he fell,
he had the catch.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
He had the ball, Isaac.

Speaker 10 (14:18):
For first of all, Mancy, you need to start a
side hustle and work your way towards becoming an NFL referee,
because I want these Mancey explanations on the field as
an NFL referee. So I want you to repeat for me.
The play has been ruled a catch, even though he

(14:39):
bobbled it for a hot second first down that would
add so much more enjoyment. Now here he ended up
with the ball. Here's the problem. By the letter of
the law in the rule book, a catch is defined,
among other things, as firm grasp and control.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
He had it.

Speaker 10 (14:55):
Now there was a split second as he's coming down
where the ball was separated by like a millimeter from
his form, and that is not firm grasp and control.
By the letter of the law, It's not a catch,
even though it walks like a catch, it acts like
a catch, it talks like a catch. The other thing

(15:16):
to consider here is the ruling on the field of
that play initially after discussion was incomplete pass. If the
initial ruling on the field was completed catch, is that
enough to get it overturned because it has to be
clear and other.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
I thought it was. I thought it was ruled complete.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
I was. I was thrown off when you said that.
But I also wasn't paying attention that closely because I
was like, that's a catch. I thought it was ruled incomplete.

Speaker 6 (15:42):
In the moment one of the line's crew said it
was a catch. Oh, I see, another one said it wasn't, and.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Then they confer, Yeah they did, So you are right,
and looking at the play by play, you're right. It
was ruled on the field incomplete.

Speaker 10 (15:56):
So if the initial ruling a catch would have been
enough to be overturned being clear and obvious.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
This is this is why the NFL uses the terms
upheld so because it doesn't give you a way, like
they'll overturn a call or a call will be upheld.
They don't say that there was inconclusive evidence of a
certain way. They'll just say it was upheld. There may
be evidence that confirms it for the original call, but
they but they won't tell you if it's confirmation or

(16:26):
if it's inconclusive. They will tell you if the call
is overturned, but the upheld portion of it, they won't
tell you on why the call didn't change. That's their
kind of sneaky way of keeping things under wraps.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
I just think the Rams in that scenario, if they
really then with with nine seconds left, you know, throw
another bomb like it doesn't right at.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
That point, it's like making Allowing that to be a
catch was still not like a game winning moment for Rams.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
They still had to do something else. I just again again,
it was a catch.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Hey, we made it interesting, b John Robinson and entertained us.
Matthew Stafford's entertain interceptions entertainment, entertainment. I thought they were
all right.

Mike Jones, covering the NFL for the Athletic joins us

(17:38):
on New Year's Eve Eve, talking all things NFL. Mike,
First of all, Happy New Year, Thanks for the time,
appreciate you coming on. How are you doing today?

Speaker 11 (17:46):
I'm doing well. How are you guys doing?

Speaker 2 (17:48):
We are doing great, But we are debating the happenings
last night in Atlanta. Pass interference or not? Do you
think that occurred on the two to two at well
long incompletion at the end of last night's game between
the Falcons and Rams Manzi's on one side, I'm on
the other. Settle the debate, mic Oh, that was.

Speaker 11 (18:06):
One hundred percent fast in appearance.

Speaker 9 (18:08):
Well, by you, I mean he freaking grabbed his arm.
He couldn't bring his arm up there to make the catch.

Speaker 11 (18:15):
He was having to do it one handed. There was
initially some mutual hand fighting, but then the.

Speaker 9 (18:20):
Second dab of the arm by the defensive back, he
really did grab his arm and if he had not,
he would have made that catch. They would have been
lined up for a field goal or even maybe a touchdown.
So yeah, I agree with you. It was definitely a
past an appearance.

Speaker 4 (18:36):
And what about that.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
Pukin Akua catch.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
Wasn't that a catch for the sake of the NFL?
In football? Wasn't that a catch?

Speaker 11 (18:44):
Well?

Speaker 9 (18:44):
Okay, that one there, it looked like it. Then the
last camera angle they showed, they did show the ball
move around. Now, it didn't touch the ground, but it
can't be moving. It had to have been secured since
he landed out of bound, it could not have moved.
If it had a moved, not moved it all and.

Speaker 11 (19:01):
He landed on the ground, it would have been, you know,
a catch. But because as he kind.

Speaker 9 (19:07):
Of twisted the ball did move around a little bit
that it got it wrong. But it was beautiful. It
should have counted, but it definitely was seemed it was
accurately deemed incomplete.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Well, on a serious note, what do you make of
the MVP uh for the NFL and the shift in
the middle of the game where Drake May now is
favored to win the MVP over Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 9 (19:34):
Yeah, you know, I mean, I guess that if the
Rams had won that and maybe Stafford directed the game
winning drive, maybe it wouldn't have had that shift. I myself,
I get it. Drake May has been, you know, fantastic.
I think a lot of their improvement has to do
more with Mike Grabil even though you know, Drake May

(19:56):
has been fantastic.

Speaker 11 (19:57):
I think Christian.

Speaker 9 (19:58):
McCaffrey is being overlooked. And then just the nature of
the business for you know, whatever reason. We only talk
about quarterbacks with the MVP, and I know it's the
most important position, but Christian McCaffrey has been such a
weapon running the ball, catching the ball, keeping that offensive
float even when they didn't have their starting quarterback. They
don't have their starting wide receiver lots of times, and

(20:18):
he's been amazing. But he's gonna get overlooked, and it's
gonna wind up being Drake May or Matthew Stafford, but
probably May.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Mike Jones joining us here on Fox Sports Radio covering
the NFL for the Athletic find him on ex at
by Mike Jones. She's Monty Belanios, I'm Dan Byer. Before
we look ahead to week eighteen, just something else from
week seventeen. You know, the Bills don't get the two
point conversion against Philadelphia, end up dropping that game in
what was a funky game all around for so many reasons.

(20:47):
But why is Buffalo so inconsistent? Why have they not
just I mean they're streaky is a nice way of
putting it. I guess inconsistent is the glass half empty
way of putting it. Well, what is going down with
going on with these up and down Bills?

Speaker 9 (21:02):
Well, I think the the biggest problem is they are
so Josh Allen dependent. You know, everybody's going to have
an off game here and there. They don't have anybody
capable of kind of taking up the slack for him. Yes,
they have James Cook and you know, and he you know,
is a dynamic running back, but none of his wide
receivers can win one on one matchup.

Speaker 11 (21:22):
There's nobody that.

Speaker 9 (21:23):
Okay, Josh Allen just needs to be able to throw
up a jump ball and know that his guy's going
to snatch it out of the air like Matthew Stafford
does with Puka or with DeVante Adams. They don't have
anybody like that in Buffalo. And so when Josh Allen's
is a little bit off, then the whole team is off.

Speaker 11 (21:40):
Then the whole offense, you know, is sputtering.

Speaker 9 (21:42):
And you know, we saw him sometimes when he gets
in that mode, he tries to do too much and
then he gets himself into trouble and had that fumble
that really led to that one, uh, you know, the
the touchdowns for Philly. So that's the biggest problem with them.
And I, you know, I feel like one hand that
the path has opened up for him to maybe get
that Super Bowl with Patrick Mahomes out of the way

(22:03):
and maybe Lamar Jackson out of the way. But at
the same time, they're so inconsistent everything around him that
I just don't know they have enough to win a
super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
Let's move on to that game in Baltimore between the
Ravens and the Steelers fighting for the division.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
Is there a coach really on the hot seat and
who do you think as the edge?

Speaker 9 (22:23):
You know, it's really hard to say whether or not
Mike Tomlin or John Harball is on the hot seat.
Both of them really well respected. They've had a lot
of success, but then when they get to the postseason
that success has been it's been a long time, I think,
you know, it's been something like eighteen years for Tomlin

(22:45):
and maybe thirteen years for Harball. Would I be surprised
if one of those teams decided to mutually part ways
and the coach, you know, wanted to change the scenery? Know,
are either one of them deserving of being fired? I
don't think so when you look at their problems compared
to a lot of the other teams. I mean, take

(23:06):
Washington just right down the road from Baltimore. They would
love it if they could get to the playoffs and
win a game and then be done, or even make
the playoffs consistently, you know, you know, and have the
type of problems that Baltimore has. There's a lot of
teams in worst shape. The stability is something that you know,
once he's gone, you know, can you duplicate it? Is

(23:29):
it something like you're going to bring in somebody And
we saw when Bill Belichick left.

Speaker 11 (23:33):
With Garrod Mayo.

Speaker 9 (23:35):
It was disastrous, But maybe quickly you can have somebody
turning around, like we saw with Mike Brabil, but that's
a big gamble, so I don't know, they better be
very sure that they have a sound candidate to take
the place of one of those two coaches that are
going to wind up being Hall of Fame coaches.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
One day, Mike Jones covers the NFL for the Athletic
joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. The crazy thing
about the Ravens thing to me, Mike, and I don't
know if this is what you've heard in your circles
throughout time, but there seemed to be an attack on
Harbaugh and maybe John Harbaugh is not long for the job.
And then there seemed to be this counter attack in

(24:13):
saying Lamar Jackson isn't is falling asleep in meetings, He's
wants practice in the afternoon, so he gets his way
that way. It felt like these stories were being put
out there in a very convenient manner. Were there rumblings?
Are there rumblings that there's a disconnect between John Harbaugh
and Lamar Jackson and Baltimore.

Speaker 9 (24:35):
I hadn't heard that, none of the stuff that came
out until they are on the ropes and their season
is you know, Lamar is injured, and they don't know,
you know, if they're going to be able to make
the playoffs. And it's amazing because really, when you think
about Lamar Jackson's one of the most talented quarterbacks.

Speaker 11 (24:53):
Of his generations. He's just not healthy.

Speaker 9 (24:56):
And it's just quite interesting that now that he's having
it down year, can't stay healthy, that all of a
sudden there are these problems that are coming out that
had never been the case with them. I'm not saying
that's not true, but it's funny when you're winning, then
maybe he kind of looked the other way when there's
some transgressions, and now that he's not on the field,

(25:18):
they're frustrations. And it did seem like there was kind
of like this volley back and forth between camps, and
so it's going to be interesting to see where it
goes with that. Obviously there are two very huge instrumental
figures in that organization to their success. You know, is
it something where Baltimore feels like they can have not

(25:41):
as dramatic a drop off and may be able to,
you know, have other areas elevate to make up for
what you lose with Lamar Jackson. I don't know, but again,
he means a lot to that city. There are many
many teams that would line up and fork over a
lot of draft sticks if they heard that he was
on the market.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
Jones joining us here on Fox Sports. Ready a last
one before we let you go. In less than a week,
Black Monday comes a calling. If you could estimate how
many teams do you think could have vacancies after the
end of the regular season with their head coaching jobs?

Speaker 9 (26:16):
Okay, well, we already know that the Giants and the Titans,
they're gonna have vacancy.

Speaker 11 (26:23):
The Raiders might as well.

Speaker 9 (26:25):
Okay, I wouldn't be surprised if Arizona is another one,
you know.

Speaker 11 (26:31):
I know that they've had some injuries and the Kyler
Murray thing, you know.

Speaker 9 (26:34):
But you know, so that's four right there. There's going
to be a surprise when somewhere. So I think five
coaching vacancies feels about right.

Speaker 2 (26:44):
Would Aaron Glenn be a surprise to you?

Speaker 9 (26:48):
Supposedly he has supportive ownerships, and I think that for them,
they think about public perception. If they fired him after
just one year, then there's gonna be all these So
I think that they would probably be patient give him
at least one more year before they pulled the plug.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
Okay, interesting, we shall see this Black Monday, now less
than a week away. Mike, We appreciate the time. Happy
new Year, love to talk football with you. You're welcome
back anytime.

Speaker 11 (27:15):
Appreciate it all right, thanks for having me. Happy New
Year for you all.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
Thanks Mike, Mike Jones the Athletic Find them at buy
Mike Jones on X. I think Monti thinks that's good news.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
Yes, it looked bad. It was a scary moment. For
a second, I thought it was a non contact, but
then you saw his own team. It kind of did
get into him, and I think maybe he tried to
avoid it and then his knee just went away. It
wasn't supposed to, so I really thought it was going
to be like done for you know, not just four weeks.
So best case scenario, speaking of.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
Don Philip Rivers done with the Colts, Riley Leonard's going
to get this start. What a run it was, truly
was we fan. We gave Philip Rivers quite the send
off last week, and he gave us bonus time. He
gave us one more go around, and it's all we
can ask not being Greedy. No, right, Yeah, we got

(28:03):
what we wanted. We got more than two. We got three.
We're just not going to get four. Jason Stewart, Yeah no.

Speaker 6 (28:09):
And Ryan Berschinger put together a nice sendoff package, put
a lot of work into it. It ended up being
a little premature, But I do also want to think
that maybe he was listening to that segment and he said,
I need I'm not done. I'm not done. I'm not
going to end it with a pick six, I think
is what Bush added in the highlight package.

Speaker 2 (28:28):
The Colts had a two to three percent chance of
making the playoffs entering their game against Jacksonville, and then
when the Texans went on Saturday, before they even took
the field, they were eliminated. So the catch for the
Colts was, you want to get a look at Riley Leonard,
but you've now prepped all week with Philip Rivers as
your starter. I'm happy when we gave Philip his sendoff.

(28:50):
I wouldn't have wanted to be I'd rather be early
rather than late on it. But I think we did
well with the cult signal caller and he added value,
and I know the game meant something to Jacksonville. So
there was something to it, but he added value into
what could have been a meaningless game and really made
the last couple of weeks pretty exciting. Like there's this
I feel everything in the NFL could be jaded by

(29:13):
your fantasy team, by your bets, by your rivalries, whatever
the case is. But he just brought good, wholesome fun
to the rodeo.

Speaker 6 (29:20):
Our boss, Scott Shapiro, it seems like he goes to
a fantasy camp every year, right, is it the Twins? Yes,
And like the Philip Rivers thing was all of us
being able to see somebody in real time, like do
a fantasy camp, like just on TV, doing fantasy camp
at the highest level. It was pretty amazing.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
It was a lot of fun. In Isaac's case yesterday,
something I agree with. I think this helps his Hall
of Fame candidacy. But the Riley Leonard era will at
least last one week as a starter.

Speaker 4 (29:48):
Y Colt, you know that decision.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
I know was in the slim hopes of still making
the playoffs, but I feel like that decision was really
big for the fans. Like you had such a good
start to the season and everything just kind of slipped
away from your fingers.

Speaker 4 (30:02):
At least they that you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
I know you brought him in because you thought there
was a fighting chance, but I have to believe that
you also brought him in to give something for the
fans in the final games of the season. You know
what I'm saying, Like, because then you're gonna show up
and watch just your team get crushed. Like, at least
you get to watch Philip Rivers and maybe see some something.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
The funny thing, I was here on Sunday when the
Colts were at the end of the game against the
Jaguars and then needed to throw up a hail Mary.
People around here were going nuts. They're like, you can't
even throw a hail Mary. Yeah, New Swash. He couldn't
five years ago. They took him out of the game
five years ago when he was in the league and
had Jacobe Brissett, I believe come in and end up
handling those duties. But Rivers couldn't do it then, couldn't

(30:42):
do it this past weekend, but nobody cares.

She's Monty Belano. So I'm Dan Byer. It is Fox
Sports Radio. Got some good nominee. We'll do it throughout
the show today over the next four hours. What's the
top story from the NFL in twenty twenty five. There's
a lot, Yeah, there are There's a lot because it
goes back to last year in the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (31:11):
Right if you really think about it.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Yeah, what happened through the draft, what happened in free agency?
A lot to get to. For over forty years, tirek
has been helping customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Ship Fasted Free backed by
free Road, has a protection with convenient installation options like
mobile tire installation tierraq dot com The way tire buying

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Day one is what they put on the clock And
here goes to John rabbitson thirty thirty five forty midfield.

Speaker 10 (31:41):
It's a fund raise Robinson thirty fifteen ten.

Speaker 6 (31:45):
Five house tall.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
Are you serious?

Speaker 1 (31:49):
Oh my goodness, he.

Speaker 4 (31:51):
Just went ninety three.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
You're sitting there and if you're in a fantasy gaming
like as long as Jean Robinson doesn't go it doesn't
happen like a ninety three yard touchdown run. I should
be safe. You were not safe on ninety two point
nine in the game, and the Falcons radio network is
that was our tiract play of the day. Maybe it
should have been the non pass interference call but instead

(32:15):
being John's run or the incomplete mast hook in the
court too catch it. It was amazing. It was one
of those catches that you see with top and wide
receivers that you say, maybe maybe he made it. That
was one that was like, no way, he may have
caught the football, but no way did he actually keep

(32:36):
his feet and bounds or vice versa. And then it
was both, but you just had the bobble which made
it incomplete. Oh what could have been Rams Now the
sixth seed in the NFC playoff picture be awesome. When
you look at the twenty twenty five NFL calendar year,
of these last twelve months, a couple of stories pop out,

(32:56):
and what we're gonna do is we're gonna go over
these stories. One going to rise above the other two.
They're going to make it to our final, which is
going to be at the end of our show. So
we'll debate what we think of the three biggest stories.
But here's a couple I want to throw out there.
How about the Micah Parsons soaka, oh all of it? Yeah, absolutely,
a lot of Jaguars turnaround from dou ball to possibly

(33:19):
the number one overall seed. How about this twenty twenty
four quarterback draft class where it is just a mix
of who's in, who's out, who's on top, who's not,
who's the best, give me the worst. So you've got
Caleb Williams, Jade and Daniels, Drake May, Bonix nine nine nine,

(33:42):
Michael Pennox, Oh yeah, oh that's interesting.

Speaker 3 (33:46):
Yeah, because everything has kind of flipped upside down a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
I think that's Jason's process on it. So, you know,
I ping pong ball.

Speaker 6 (33:54):
I care more about how things are covered than actually
just the actual sport, So I pay attention to this stuff.
If you took a poll among insiders or people that
covered the sport, they would have said Jaden Daniels would
have been the first overall pick. If they redrafted it,
say back in August, Jaden Daniels and then maybe Caleb
Williams now is Drake May at the top. Everyone knew

(34:16):
that you take Drake May at the top. He's the MVP,
of course, and Jayden Daniels is far down the list.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
Almost an afterthought at this point.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
It is funny when I think of Drake May, because
all I think about was the story on how Bears
GM Ryan Poles was so dead set on taking Caleb Williams,
which was fine because many people just were going along
for the ride that Caleb Williams should be the number
one overall pick. And that's totally fine. Now, as an NFLGM,

(34:44):
I think you have to be different than everybody else
and be more open minded. No, he was like us,
he was putting, he was putting bad. Drake May plays
in films being like, yeah, this guy, this kid just
isn't it, He's not it all in a way to
make sure that they would draft Kleb william so he
didn't have to tear down other quarterbacks to do that.
Just take Caleb Williams, just say you like his stuff more,

(35:06):
and that's where you're going with But the rankings have changed.
Caleb Williams not a great rookie year. Now with Ben Johnson,
he may be right on the heels of one Drake
May and.

Speaker 6 (35:14):
Then bo Nicks is just a he's just leading the
top AFC team right now.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
He's the bo Nicks experience. It truly is. And nine
is nine, you know, That's all you can say about that.

Speaker 3 (35:25):
And then the Falcons moving up, didn't they move up
to get Michael Pennock junior after giving Kirk Cousins a contract,
And now, yeah, a guy who has a history of injuries.

Speaker 4 (35:33):
Oh he's hurt.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Yes, surprise, surprise, surprise. The Parsons thing to me is,
I think it's bigger than the other three because of
the negotiations in the spring, the standoff in the summer,
the eventual trade, and then what that trade did is
it forced the Cowboys to make other trades because Jerry
Jones felt that he needed to do something, would talk
about his ammunition and then gave some of it away

(35:56):
to bring in a guy like Quinn Williams. And then
Parsons ends up blowing out his knee likely signifying any
chance that Green Bay has to win the Super Bowl
in Super Bowl sixty. So you'd take the whole Micah
Parsons experience, that's the one that rises to the top
to me. I agree.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
Is he still doing this podcast?

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Do you have surgery today or yesterday?

Speaker 4 (36:17):
But I feel like I hadn't seen it throughout the
season as he's been a packer.

Speaker 6 (36:21):
I don't think he's doing his regular thing.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
No, it's on hiatus. Oh that's interesting, Chris Isaac. Of
those three Jaggs turn around, Michael Parsons draft class, which
one do you think rises to the top.

Speaker 10 (36:31):
Micah Parsons of those three, Yeah, Michah Parsons I think
flipped the entire calculus of how we view that division.
Although I will say we've come an extremely long way
from Week one Vikings and bears of that JJ McCarthy
come from behind victory and how Caleb looked and like
it's a complete reverse.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Yeah, loots from there. I'd give it a nine out
of ten for the performance in the fourth quarter for
JJ McCarthy. The other thing with Parsons, honestly, I think
we all just thought he was going to get paid,
that Jerry would give in, and then he didn't in
the team that he sent him to in the deal
that he got all of that all right, So Michael
Parsons is going to advance to the next round. End
of the show, we'll see who that story will be

(37:08):
up again. She's Monze Belanios. I'm Dan Byer. What did
you miss from week seventeen? Chargers fans, close your ears.
That's next.
