Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
What up?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Welcome in. This is not heard wherever you may be
and however you may be making this part of your day.
Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb. I'm in for Colin callahert.
Colin's epic vacation we believe will come to an end,
will be back Monday, maybe Tuesday. I don't I don't
really know. I don't control Collin's catcher. Actually must be Tuesday,
(00:49):
because I'm filling in for Dan on Monday. But there
was a possibility of Colin on Monday. So that means
these are things you don't care about.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
So you're on your way to Lake Beach Mountain family,
or maybe you know in a cruel joke, cruel twist,
your kid's first high school football game is tonight, or
your favorite college team plays tomorrow, or play Sunday whatever.
So you're kind of your last holiday weekend of summers
kind of screwed up a little bit, I'm sorry. And
(01:24):
your last Friday before you know, college football season really
truly kicks off is kind of screwed up because I'm hosting,
not Collin. Sorry. I can't help you with those things,
but I can help you with some perspective. On last night,
it was the late great Denny Green who won a
Monday night football game. And we forget so quickly that
(01:45):
Denny Green coached the Arizona Cardinals. We think of a
Denny Green, we think of the Minnesota Vikings, but he
coached the Arizona Cardinals, and the Cardinals were not very good.
I think Matt Lioner might have been their quarterback. Maybe
it was Kurt Warner, but was before they made the
run towards the Super Bowl and the Bears were good.
(02:06):
This I think was coming off of the Super Bowl
year and on a Monday night football game, the Cardinals
had the Bears right where they want them and they
couldn't close the deal, couldn't win the game, and they
let them off the hook, right. But it was the
big line which most sports radio producers and board ops
(02:30):
they have up there on screen, which is they are
who we thought they were, and that's Colorado, right, That's Colorado.
And it's always interesting to me on how we have
these expectations of guy shows up and you know, six
days later they have themselves a great football program. Now,
(02:54):
in fairness, what I saw Bob Stoops do in transform
Oklahoma was nothing short of miraculous. Oklahoma during the last
year of the John Blake era was an abject disaster,
but it was not devoid of talent. They just John
Blake's last game. And John Blake was a I think
(03:16):
he passed away recently as well. John Blake was a
really well regarded man and recruiter, but he wasn't a
very good x NOS coach. And his last regular season game,
I think his last game of his coaching career as
head coach was against Oklahoma State. And in that game,
they ran some shotguns. Before we call it spread, it
wasn't spread. They ran some shotgun, they ran some power Eye,
(03:38):
and they ran some wishbone as well, all in the
same game. None of it worked, none of us pretty well.
There was no kind of foundation or theme or what
they did. They just went out there and played stoops
takes over. And if you remember that first year, they
did take up a walloping. I believe text A and
m beat him like sixty sixty three. But after that
(04:00):
year two it was on. He found his quarterback in
Josh Hipels, now the head coach at Tennessee. The system
which was installed by Mike Leach. Mike Leach Chech actually
left and went to Texas techcause the head coach after
one year, and I started to run the football a
little bit more and got a lot more conservative. But
more than anything, the defense kind of just took over.
It was dominant. That was a five hundred team that
(04:25):
became a national championship team in two years. And because
because we've seen it there, because we saw it with
Urban Meyer, you know, two years in Ohio State, two
years in at Florida, our assumption is that Dion Sanders
could do the same thing at Colorado, and that's not happening. Now.
(04:49):
I don't know what their ultimate ceiling is, because it
stands to reason they're a better team this year than
they were last year, and their their league, their conference
is easier this year than was last y. And you
can sit there and yell and scream me all you
want and say I'm some sec or Big ten wonk
or Pack ten lover or whatever you want to call me.
I'm actually in love them. Of the Big Twelve. I'm
(05:10):
proponlling the Big Twelve. I think the Big Twelve was awesome.
And if you want to say top to bottom, there's
better athletes in the Big Twelve than that we're in
the Pac twelve, I'm okay with that. The difference is
last year was a special year in the Pac twelve,
where you had fifth year quarterbacks at Washington, at Oregon,
you had the number one pick at USC you had
(05:32):
a six year pit quarterback who didn't play. Now he's
seventh year at Utah, like you just had dudes. Arizona
was loaded. It was an incredible league last season. And
while the Big Twelve I think will be really good.
I think it's gonna end up being the third best
league some years, the fourth, this year probably the third.
The difference is last year was an unbelievable year, and
(05:53):
it was year one for Colorado and they walked into
a bunch of buzzsaws. The difference is that this year
North Dakota State Hard Game well coached team. They're not
the same since their coach left for Kansas State. But
then they go to Nebraska and Colorado State, two games
(06:14):
they won at home last year after surprising everybody being
TCU to start the year. But I watched last night
and I felt like, anybody have kids that likes to
go to Beny Hannah, I've you here to ask my son, Hey,
you can pick one restaurant on Earth to have a
(06:35):
reservation at one restaurant. And my son is not sheltered.
He's really not. You know, He's lived in Connecticut and
in California and Oklahoma. He's been to Wisconsin and to
Maine and to New Hampshire and to Minnesota and to
(06:55):
Illinois and to Texas. He's been to Oregon, to Nevada.
He's been to an Arizona. He's been to a lot
of places. So at fifteen years old, if I would
say to him like, hey, dude, you can have a
resi at any restaurant ever on Earth right now, do
you know what he'd pick? He'd pick Beennyhanna. And to
(07:16):
those of us are adults, we go to Betty Hanna
and we're like, Okay, here comes the egg.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Thing.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Right, here comes the volcano fire. Volcano fire. Then they'll
cook the chicken usually first, right, the chicken first, and
then they take the spatula and they can kind of
flip the chicken into your mouth. Then get the land
in your mouth. Any of these things. Anyone who's ever
been to Benny Hanna. I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah,
(07:44):
And at the end of the day, you're like, yes,
it's fine, it's fine, it's in no way bad. But
no one ever says, you know, I know you can
go to a Mission Star restaurant, but what you should
do is try that Betty Hanna over at Newport Beach.
It's amazing. It's just not.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
So.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I look at Colorado football last night and I think
that was, like Benny Hannah. You know, Shador is good.
He's better than advertised. Obviously. Travis Hunter is amazing, just
an amazing young football player. Last touchdown catch was incredible.
How to he make it? I'm sure he's good enough
on defense, although it's hard to tell, like we don't
(08:26):
have an ISO cam on him. Like he's big time.
Those two guys are really good football players, and you
know they scored at the end of the first half.
Kind of like it's a party trick. But at the
end of the day, their defense isn't very good. They
can't run the football, they're kind of soft. Schor's good.
But you know, it feels like the whole deal is
(08:47):
just set up for him to be a star so
that he can win a heightstro Trophy, he can be
a high draft pick. Like that's really it's not set
up with the idea of, hey, let's win a bunch
of football games. Let's grind it out, let's be tougher,
let's be nastier, let's be meaner. No, it's not like
a play. It's just like a trip to Benny Hannah.
Whereas there's lots of kids like Marin Colorado's playing, the
(09:07):
rest are like it's okay, it's fine. They be North
Dakota State. They didn't cover there was nothing, no lasting takeaways.
It's not like I want the two hours back or
two and a half hours back from watching the game.
But it's not like I'm calling my friends like did
you watch that game? That was an amazing game? Did
you see what he did? I can't believe what he did.
(09:33):
And then there's the weird part of Dion Sanders they
get the ball back. They get the ball back with
less than two minutes to go. It's like a minute
thirty five o'clock first down, and North Dakota State has
one timeout. And it's not like we haven't seen this before,
like we saw it last year. Did Mario Crystal bualpol
(09:55):
one of these deals out last year where he tried
to score an extra touchdown and then up losing the game.
I think was the Georgia Tech I want to say
last season anyway, here you have Deon Sanders. All you
has to do is take an e, take an ee,
take a knee, and if they wanted to punt, then
they could punt. Then you know, you could quick kick it,
(10:18):
scrit it down there. It would have been ten seconds left.
The game is essentially over. Like if you're really creative
about it, you can run around for ten seconds back
there before you take one of the knees and then
take a knee and the game would have been over
after the third play the time expired with one time
out left. Instead, they decided to throw the ball on
(10:41):
first down, where Schner badly under threw the ball. Lucky
he wasn't intercepted, which allowed for a bunch of times.
And even though Colorado State didn't Colroo State, even though
North Kota State didn't do anything out of it, they
sure as hell could have. Here's Dion when he was
talking about passing late in the game.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Shador is such a good kid. Sometimes it costs him
because at the end of the game, we just want
to run the ball.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Let's get out of here.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
And he took a shot, you know, to Legonte because
he wanted Lejonte to have a big played. But that's
his character. I'm like, come on, dog, not not right now.
You know, it's not time to the good guy. Right now,
it's time to put this game way you ever felt
like you want, but you didn't win. Let's move home
from there. I'm gonna try my best to hold back
mine anger. But we got the w so I'm okay.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
So here's the thing, either Shador. Either Shador is lying
or Dion's lying right, because that story doesn't make any sense. Remember,
we're told how smart a football player Shaudor is, and
I'm willing to believe it that he is ready to
be a pro quarterback. I'm ready to believe it. No
(11:54):
one plays quarterback with any sort of football IQ to
win a game and throws the football there because this
boy needs to get a touchdown. No one does that.
There's only there's only really a couple of possibilities. One
(12:14):
is they're trying to win awards, trying to have highsman moments,
trying to win awards. That's what it felt like, you know,
throwing a touchdown late when they're in zero coverage and
all you're doing is taking a knee. That's trying to
pump up the stats. That's what that is. That's a possibility.
It could be possibility that Dion's trying to do that
(12:36):
for a sun or trying to run out the score.
That's possibility, or or they're telling the truth and it's
the dumbest football decision you've ever seen in your life. Possibility,
but as remote of possibilities you can possibly get. So
what do we have in summation? Dion thinks they're way
(12:58):
better than they played. The rest of us watch like, eh,
same thing, a little bit better, same thing, you know,
and you walk away thinking, you know where it's good.
Travis Hutter's good. I've seen the volcano trick, I've seen
the egg thing. I've seen a little flip your spatch
(13:18):
low with your piece of chicken into my mouth, thing like,
I don't know, I'm probably gonna be hungry in like
forty minutes again. Anyway, all right, coming to next in
the Herd. We've all seen Sean McVay on the sidelines
and TV with all that energy. But what's he really like?
(13:40):
Well ask k Williams. He'll join us up coming next.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern a em Pacific on Fox Sports Radio

to go tankless. Visit Tankless made Simple dot com. Let's
get you closer and closer ready for the upcoming NFL season. Also,
maybe a little college football talk. Kien Williams joins us
(14:15):
of course, was a star Notre Dame. Only two seasons
that really played there. He had over a thousand yards
rushing and he's his star running back now for the
LA Rams, but also a star punt returner. Karen Williams
joins us in the herd. Karen, how did it come
to be? Like who came to you and said, Hey,
(14:38):
what do you think about returning punts?
Speaker 3 (14:42):
You know that was a it was kind of an
early conversation that we had coming into this season. You know,
I remember the first day of I think camp closely,
Vay came up to me. It was like, look, man,
if we have to use you, we might need to
use you a point returner. You know, we so confident
you had the trust to go back there and catch
the ball and do what you gotta do. And so
(15:03):
you know that's something I had an idea of throughout
the whole training camp. Then you know that's something I
may do. So when he came out, came out and
said that, it was no surprise to me. But you know,
I'm you know, it's something I've done before, you know,
I'm and that's something I'm not really too worried about doing.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Yeah, but yeah, and I'll just tell you I'm not
a fantasy owner of yours. But fantasy owners are like
freaking out, like, well, okay, maybe we can get some
more points out of him, but the last thing we
want is our running back on the shelf and you know,
like you even had an injury when you first got
to the dad to the rams. How do you balance
that between You're a guy that wants to go hard
every time you get the ball, and it's it's an
additional possession of additional chance to make a play. On
(15:42):
the other hand, like you know, the lifespan of a
running back is short enough to begin with, the last
thing you want is, you know, to waste it on
some hit un punter turned. How do you balance that?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Yeah, it's I mean, you're not wrong, but you know,
it's just just a decision maker as a punisher that's
going and when you have opportunities to make one, make
you make a play happen or not. You know, it's
something that I feel like if I have a good
feeling for and you know, you can't play the game
expect or thinking of it's kinda the worst thing. The
worst thing is worst is gonna happen, and that's when
new things happen. So you know, I'm just going to
(16:15):
go out there, be a good part of turn and
make smart decisions and knowing that I still got to
go be a running back. You know, I'm not I
know how to you know, pick and two is what
I gotta do.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
What is what's it like not having Aaron Donald at camp?
Speaker 3 (16:32):
Hmmm, I mean it's it's definitely different, you know, because
he was somebody who's who's obviously a Hall of Fame player,
a great one of the best players who played ever
on the defense side of the ball. So you know,
it's definitely different. But you know, those young guys like
Braden Jerry versus you know, Kobe Turners, They're they're showing up.
You know, they're making plays as if you know a A.
(16:53):
D was still here. So you know, it's good seeing that.
It's good being able to have that competitive work against
them guys who you know who.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
Are going on.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, but it's different when he's out in there like
that dude, That dude, he puts fear into grown men's hearts.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
I mean, yeah, that's what Ad does, you know.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Just ruining practice? Hey, can he not ruin practice? All right?
Final retire, That's that's that's that's what Karen Williams doing this,
uh in for calling him Doug Gottlieb. This is the
Hurt on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app Okay,
So what's McVeigh really like like on a day to
day basis, you're a starting running back. What's your interactions
with him like on a daily basis.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
We know it's about ball. You know, he's he's super
locked in. He's whether he's on the office side or
the deepen his side, you know, he's super locked in.
And you know he's always coaching. He's always out there
trying to help people get better, and he's scheming. You know,
he can always you can always tell that when he's
out there calling him place he's he's he's working on
he know, and he's working on getting himself better as
a coach too. You know, he's challenging himself with different looks,
(17:55):
you know, different play calls and being able to create
different looks as an offense, you know, be able to
confuse the defense. And you know he's always working. You know,
they can tell like that he's always got his mind's
always going, always thinking about ball. But there's also a
funny side to him. You know, he's he's like to
crack jokes, he likes to do funny things and you know,
(18:16):
tell funny stories, and so you know he's a great coach.
He's one of the best coaches I've been around for sure.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Did you watch the Connor Stallions documentary?
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yeah, I watched. I watched some of the coach a
couple of nights ago. Actually, what do you think. I
think it's funny, and honestly, I think it's crazy how
how people are willing to go that far for you know,
the school, or just for how much love they have.
It's crazy to be able to see, you know, because
I'm a player, so I never really had that fan feeling.
So it's crazy to see that people actually love love
(18:47):
football just as much as we do.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Yeah, no, love it even more like to it to
a level of like some kind of kind of uncomfortable
in terms of well there anything for the for the
team to win. As a domer. You watch Michigan, how
much do you think that was sponsored for Michigan's success?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
And I don't think. I don't think it has nothing
to do what they're sus said. I think they just
had great players, and you know, the things that they
were able to do is just allowed them to keep
winning and winning even after they did get caught. So
I just think it has much more to do with
just how crazy fans are, not even sayings, but how
crazy their love and passion goes for the team.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Thoughts in your Irish heading into uh heading into college station.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Oh yeah, I'm excited, you know, I'm excited to watch
the game, to be able to see a new team.
You know, it's crazy how many I'm three years removed
to see how different the day is already. So I'm
excited for what they have to do and with the
thought for Saturday.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
That is weird, right, because like usually you're a couple
of years remove, you're like, oh, he was a young
buck when I was there. He was redshirting when I
was there. Like now they have, you know, every year
now bringing a new quarterback, new dudes. That's just and
especially for a place like Notre Dame, which has not
been a transfer haven in years in the past, it
is interesting to turn on you're and you're not that
far removed and not and legit needs somebody's name because
(20:06):
you don't know who that guy is, right, I.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Just don't know, you know, don't They don't have the
name of the back of the jersey's either, so you you
got to really know them to know who they are,
and not just you know, I'm so far moved.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
I don't you guys open the season against a team
that everyone's talking about because they took the Niners, you know,
all the way to the end in the playoffs, and
you know the Lions. Obviously you have a former RAMS quarterback.
You gotta your the GM's former RAMS personnel guy, Like,
there's a lot of Rams to what they do. Look,
(20:39):
I know it's the whole season, it's not just one game.
They're not a rival, But what is it like for
you in prepping for that Lions game where you're a
team that Let's just be honest, people aren't talking about
the Rams a couple of years removed from Super Bowl
Hall of Fame quarterback, elite, elite coach. People aren't talking
about what's it like for you to preparing for a
game where people are talking about the Lions more than
(21:01):
talking about the Rams.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
Man. I don't I'm not really I don't really hear
too much. You know, we don't really try to stay
in the headlines, at least I've done at all, and
so I don't really hear too much that's going on.
I'm just worried about focusing on how I can get
better each and every single day so that when Sunday comes,
I'm the best player version of me to go allow
help my team to go win. So, you know, I
think we're just continuing to keep working and keep you know,
(21:26):
bonding and jelling as a team. We know who we're playing, obviously,
but you know, it's the first game of the season.
We're excited for what the challenge is. And you know,
we're going in there knowing that no one was us
against everybody, So we're just you know, excited for the
opportunity that we have to open up the season on
September eight.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Kyron William showing us on the on the in the
Herd here on Fox Sports Radio. I'm always interested. You know,
you guys had roster cutdowns. How many those guys you
will never see again in life, Like I'm never going
to see this guy again ever.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Yeah, that's crazy, man's it's crazy the business and that
business side part of the believe when you know, you get
close to guys and then some of those guys you know,
unfortunately don't make it, and so it's crazy to be
able to you know, just move on from you know
what it used to be. Like I guess. But you know,
it's just a business that we got ourselves into and
(22:17):
we just got to continue just to remember what's to
go on it all?
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah, no question. But like you're you're sharing a locker
room with a guy for like a couple of weeks
and all of a sudden next to you know, like
you like don't see him ever, he's Key's Keys. What
do you what are you doing with direct TV for business?
Speaker 3 (22:33):
You know, I partnered with direct TV for business because
you know, for over thirty years they've been supplying just
any type of games, pro college, any sport, anything, just
for fans to be able to catch, you know, catch
any game that they would like. You know, now with
NFL and the tickets, you can go to any local
bar that you know, any region to go, you know,
(22:56):
go to the local bar and just watch a game
and sit down with your family and friends and whatnot
to share time and watch NFL games together. So you
know that's just something that you know, for me growing up,
that's something I remember growing doing when I was with
my family, you know, we would always go to you know,
play Me like Buffalo or you know, different just type
of sports bars to be able to catch you know,
all the NFL NFL games, so I parted with them,
(23:19):
just be able to allow other people to experiences those
experiences I have.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Karen, listen, man, we wish you nothing but success. Be
safe back there, returning kicks. Don't be afraid take one
to the house, right, I mean there's if you're gonna
you're turn might as well take one of the house.
And why not? And can we see take on the lines.
Really appreciate appreciate you, all right, Karen Williams join us
here in the hurd him Doug Gally beIN for Colin.
Let's get to Ryan Music with the news.
Speaker 6 (23:44):
No, no, it's the heard line news. Doug, good morning,
my friend, what's up. Always good to be back with you,
and great stuff there from Kiren Williams talk to the NFL.
Talked a little college football and college football as where
we're going to start here because he's back again. Doug
(24:06):
cam Rising, quarterback for Utah, kicked off his seventh year
of college football with a bang last night, throwing a
career high five touchdown passes in their dominating win over
Southern Utah. So let's break this down because yes, you
heard that correctly. Rising seventh season of college football. How's
this possible? Twenty eighteen started at Texas red shirted, twenty nineteen,
(24:29):
transfers to Utah red shirts again. NCAA denied his waiver
for immediate eligibility twenty twenty, permitted an additional season due
to COVID twenty one and twenty two. He starts for
Utah twenty three medical red shirt, and now here we
are twenty four starting again, and get this, technically still
(24:50):
eligible and could play an eighth year if he wanted to,
but he did tell reporters that that's not the plan.
Years is more than enough, so as of now, his
plan to be done after seven seasons in college football,
and got things got things rolling for the Utah Utes
last night.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Well, you know, Alan Bowman is similarly in his seventh
year with Oklahoma State, and they'll take on each other.
It'll be the two oldest quarterbacks ever.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
And he started his career at Texas Tech, was at
Texas Tech for three years, then was at Michigan as
a backup, and I think he played in six games
total for two years, and then last year they were
playing three quarterbacks. He ends up getting aamed starting quarterback
like midway through the year and now he's back for
year seven. That's incredible.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
So that's crazy because for him, he has been in
college for seven years, but probably only has as you
mentioned there maybe somewhere the neighborhood of like ten starts
rising actually got a couple of full seasons, and so
that's kind of remarkable to go that long in college
and finally be the time starter in your seventh year.
But good for him, love you. Yeah, it's gotta be weird.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Yeah, I mean, look, I am rising to be somewhere
six straight years, to be one place six straight years, Yeah,
that's gotta be.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
I mean obviously a lot there with like.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Hey, do you want to go to this meeting? Like
I've been to that meeting. I don't remember if it
was year two or year four or year five. I
was at that meeting.
Speaker 6 (26:23):
It's sort of it's sort of pro in the sense
that you know with like Kyle Whittingham, it's like, okay, coach, yep, No,
it's a great story.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
You know.
Speaker 6 (26:32):
People used to say that about if you're with Pete
Carroll for too long, you've kind of heard all the
same stories two, three, four times over. Again, Cam Rising'
is like, oh yeah, coach, No, yeah, I'm aware I
heard that four years ago. So uh, we're all good here.
But you know, all the best of Cam Rising in
this seventh and potentially final season in college football. But
now we're gonna turn to the pros dug because no
(26:53):
surprise here some news out of the NFL Miami Dolphins
giving their head coach Mike McDaniel contract extension through the
twenty twenty eight season. Now. The Dolphins, of course, have
made the playoffs in McDaniel's first two seasons in Miami,
and they had the number one total offense in the
NFL last year. Still, however, Dolphins have not won a
(27:15):
playoff game since two thousand. Yikes.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Yeah, I mean, like, look, I think this has got
to be the last year where you feel like they
have a chance, because next year that's when to his
contract goes live. And I just if you can't surround
him with the elite talent that they've had, I don't
see them being an elite team. He's fine, he's not bad, sure,
(27:41):
but as as much as he's discussed, he's not in
the league quarterback. And you know, they they're a team
that they got to have home games in the playoffs
to be successful, just because you know they're a little
bit weather dependent. Yeah, but I think there's no question
that his style of coaching is one that people like
and it works. I just think the thing they're bumping
into is personnel based. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (28:02):
I mean, it's tough for them because it's all sort
of circumstantial. On the road you have ahead based off
of who the good teams are. And for Tua, we
saw it last year. Obviously, Chiefs have been reigning supreme
in the AFC, and there was a particularly cold weather
front that rolled through Kansas City and they struggled to
(28:24):
even move the ball in those freezing cold temperatures. But
some of these other teams too, Like you expect Buffalo
to be one of those teams, whether it's at the
end of the regular season or throughout the playoffs, they're
gonna have to go into Buffalo, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals.
I mean, I guess even potentially the Jets on how
they do with Aaron Rodgers, and so that's what's going
(28:46):
to be tough for them. And the way that they're
built is I guess one team they would be lucky
to potentially match up with to be like the Houston Texans.
That could be something that could play to their advantage
if they ever had to play on the road in Houston.
You know, we know this a lot with Peyton Manning
in his heyday back with the Colts and being able
to play inside but then sometimes struggled when they had
(29:06):
to go to Foxborough.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Correct.
Speaker 6 (29:08):
Yeah, So looks like Miami into a shaping up to
have a long relationship with Mike McDaniel. But whether or
not they'll be able to translate that into some substantial
playoff wins, well that remains to be seen. You actually
touched on this with Kyron Williams. There they have their
Week one game Rams Lions. Let's talk about the Lions
(29:29):
though here. They got their first playoff win in over
three decades last season, and they're in prime position to
be a contender in the NFC this year, maybe even
a real Super Bowl contender. Don't believe me, Well, why
don't you just ask them? Their general manager, Brad Holmes,
who came over from the Rams, was asked what his
expectations are for this season. Quote, win the Super Bowl. Simple,
(29:52):
straight to the point. Doug win the Super Bowl. That's
all Detroit cares about anymore. Quite a turnaround from where
we were just a couple of seasons ago.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
I don't see them win this bullegery Goff's quarterback. I'm
just don't. We'll see it. I could be wrong, don't
see it. And then you know, like look, even their
decision making last year, coaches decision making in terms of
when to go when not go, you know, was was
weird in San Fran. I thought last year they had
the chance even though they were on the road. They
(30:20):
had San Fran on the ropes, and they couldn't capitalize.
So I just whatever reason. And it's not like brock
perty sets the world on fire. I just sure, I don't.
I'm just not a buyer there.
Speaker 6 (30:34):
Yeah, I mean it's much like what we saw with
how Gough was able to be successful with the Rams
is the Lions are very much in that sweet spot still.
I mean, they are totally loaded. They have offensive line
to give him the protection that he needs. Otherwise, we
know GoF easily gets rattled. They have great running backs
(30:56):
that he can hand the ball off to, and they
have other offensive pieces to work on offense. So this
is the best situation, and year to year, you don't
know how things are going to evolve in the next
year and who wants to get paid in new contracts
and whatever, and offensive lines get old very quickly. So
(31:17):
if there's gonna be a year, it certainly feels like
this year. I honestly think one of the biggest things
they're gonna run into is I think the Packers are
going to be real, real players, And so last year
was a great window for them. With Kirk Cousins went down,
the Bears were still struggling, and the Packers, you know,
it took until halfway through the season or so for
(31:38):
them to get their stuff figured out. And now, I mean,
we'll see what happens with the Bears and Caleb Williams,
but all early returns in the preseason is at least
they are substantially improved.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
But it looks like it looks like the Bears actually
have a quarterback, and the Packers continue to look like
they're super talented. But none of it matters. Do we
get to the game with you and I think Minnesota
still gonna be pretty good.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
I do.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
Maybe that's because, as you know, I'm one of the
few Colin still also holding a couple of shares.
Speaker 6 (32:09):
No, no, no, Colin, Colin has a much larger holding of
Sam Darnold chairs. Then he'll even admit publicly. I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
True, but I'll actually publicly admit it. So I'm okay
saying you know, anyway, point is, yeah, I think division
is tough, and they're playing a tougher schedule.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
So you know, we do have this sort of expectation,
and you know, obviously we'll see what ends up playing
out with the Lions, but we do have this expectation
that teams that sort of come out of nowhere have
a promising postseason run that it's like there's a steady increase,
like oh, first you win a playoff game and then
(32:51):
you go to the NFC Championship game, which means the
next year you go to the Super Bowl. And the
Lions could be like what we saw with the Bills,
who we thought the Bill got to an AFC championship
game and it's like, oh, they're going to be going
toe to toe with the Chiefs every year and it's
going to be one of the two of them always
going to the Super Bowl, and it's like ever since then,
it's oh, wait, actually the Bengals might be better, and
(33:11):
oh you can't get back to the AFC Championship game.
So it's never a lot guarantee that these teams that
find success are just immediately improving the next year.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
No question. A lot of times it's harder to have
a second good year or a third good year than
it is to have just a good year one hundred percent,
you know, And as you point out, they're loaded a
lot like Tampay Buccaneers were loaded for you, because you know,
when you're bottom five in the league, bottom ten league,
you're drafting good players every year, even if you miss
on one every other year. Sure, and I think, look
(33:43):
Jameson Williams, like they hadn't gotten much out of him,
and by all accounts, he's way better this year. So
their talent maybe better, but it doesn't matter terms of
everybody has talent and you got to figure out a
way to get them all to pool in the same direction.
That's ry music with the news. Well that's the news,
and thanks for stopping by the herd Line news. Well,
(34:04):
our long national nightmare is over. Brandon a yuk is
remaining a San Francisco fort nine. I know everybody concerned
themselves with it, Why it doesn't really matter to the niners,
and what does next? In the Herd. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Herd weekdays and noon Eastern
non a em Pacific.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Pauli Fools Go here with Tony Foosco.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
As everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning
Polly and Toni Foosco Show. Yeah, but instead of us
telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Packrick
described us when he came on our show.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
What what are you doing interrupting our promo?
Speaker 1 (34:38):
Yeah, you wasn't talking about you. You took those clips
totally out of context.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
Oh yeah, Well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you. Let me put this into context.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Shut up.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fusco
Show on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Yee, Doug Elliman for Collins The Herd, Fox Sports Radio,
Heart Radio app mm hmmmm. I just discover j Lab
headphones and they're great. The j buds lucks over ear
noise canceling headphones are awesome, especially when you're traveling. Find
(35:16):
the blue Box at Walmart, Target, Best Buy and more?
Or is it jaylab dot com? So Brandon Ayuka a
yuk agreed to a contract extension. Yeah, and I'm not
diminishing the fact he's a really, really talented player. But
when we start to go through all the great wide receivers,
(35:39):
do people list Brandon Ayuk? And maybe it's that he's
part of the system, part of an ensemble cast. They
have so many good players there that he gets caught up.
But I thought the the decision was pretty evident for
him in that he was presented with the potential trade
to the Patriots, Like, look, either you can be one
(36:00):
of the best players with the Niners and have a
chance to win Super Bowl, or you can be the
best player with the Patriots and not win anything. It's like, now,
I want to stay with the Niners. Okay, Well that's
how it works, right. So he gets one hundred and
twenty guaranteed. He's not the highest paid, but it's a
lot of money. What's interesting is does anyone feel any
(36:25):
more or less sure of the Niners the likelihood of
success since a Yuke has consummated his deal. No, but
if you if you get down to it and you're like, well,
what about Trent Williams, Now that one is interesting. Now,
Trump Williams is older. He's done this whole out thing before,
(36:46):
so he's a pro adit. But he's older, and he
wasn't great at the end of last season, and I'm
sure that he's probably past the point of no return
in terms of getting back to being a superstar. But
he's still a leader and a really good player and
you want him. So it's trying to thread that needle.
But the reality is, if you're the Niners, your season
is much more dependent upon having Trent Williams and his
(37:08):
head from Brandon Ayuk. Ayuk is going to help you
win a game in the regular season or two, but
you have no chance to getting where you want to
get to without Trent Williams, whereas you could survive without Ayuk,
you could survive. So congrats. Everybody was kind of annoyed
with this story. You're like, Eh, is he playing yet? Now?
(37:33):
Why not? I don't know. Everyone's kind of annoyed with
the story. Now nobody's annoyed anymore. Now we just move on. Now,
Trent Williams. That becomes interesting and and Trent, you know,
for his part, he knew how toxic a situation it
was in Washington. He forced his way out of there.
(37:54):
But now you're in a stable situation. You can't make
this and you're like, well, this is my last big payday. Great,
but you got the chance of the immortality of becoming
a Super Bowl champion. I don't think you have that
chance if you overpay for Trent Williams, because he doesn't
have nearly the tread life left that a Uke does,
(38:17):
that Deebo Samuel has, that Rock Party has that some
of the other players have. They have their younger they're
going to have more opportunities.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Now.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Some of you might say, well, it's your last bite
at the apple. Take as big a bite as you can,
because you're never going to get all that NFL money.
I agree, But the biggest post career benefits you're going
to get are if you come from winning a super Bowl.
Everybody wants to have a Super Bowl champion on their commercial,
(38:49):
represent their car dealership, represent their industry, represent whatever it is.
So if you're Trent Williams, you got to calculate that
what is the most I can push for while still
maintain the intel of the team that we have because
in order for me to make the Hall of Fame,
in order for me to do all these things I
want to do, it really really helps post career if
you've won a Super Bowl during your career. All Right,
(39:13):
we got a outstanding final two hours of the show.
John Middelkoff will join us next hour. Also, Petros Papadekus
is going to join us in the third and final
hour of the show. We'll get you ready for Big
Ten football. It just feels weird, right, like all these
(39:34):
things feel about normal.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
You know.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
I'm in northeast Wisconsin. The humidity about two days ago
has cut. It feels like it falls kind of here.
Supposed to be hot and beautiful today and over the weekend,
but like we're on like eighty. We're no longer in
the nineties, like falls here, kids, And yet the Big
Ten has how many teams in the SEC Texas and
(40:00):
Oklahoma and the SEC and look at the Big Twelve.
It's weird, weird, but we haven't gotten to And I'll
tell you the weirdest part about conference play is Colorado
is now a Big Twelve. Team I'm gonna love. I'm
gonna alum of a Big twelve team. Traditionally, you're supposed
to kind of root for You don't want them to
(40:21):
look good and you want to think you can beat them,
but you have to root for your Big twelve or
SEC or Big ten brethren. Now you're like, wait, now
I got a root for Colorado. Like I like that
way better when I could just make fun of them.
Think about that. Now, you're if you're a Big ten
year in Ohio state thing, You're like, I need sc
to be good this year. It helps our league. You
(40:44):
know you're a Georgia alumi, You're like, I need Oklahoma
to be good this year helps our league. Or if
you're in Oklahoma alum, you're like, I need Alabama, I
need Texas, I need A and M to pick it up.
I need them to beat Notre Dame. That's just weird.
I mean, the word weird has become really a big
talking point over the last couple months. Nothing more weird
(41:06):
than seeing those teams. And you have to cheer for
those teams that used to just be super okay with
making fun of all. Right, coming up next, Jerry and
Dak are together for now because it's convenient. I'll explain next.
Doug Gottli been for Collins to hurt
