The crown is yours. So uh, it's a Thursday. And
(00:48):
if you dialed back in the memory bank only five
six years ago, right pre covid you go pre covid
tonights game Jets against Patriots. Is It's not like the
greatest rivalry in the NFL. It's not even one of
the top five, but it. It was this kind of
(01:10):
classic rivalry of you ever been to a dog park?
Dog parks are really interesting places. I mean you have
some people that are just way too into their dog,
way too into it. There's some pople that bring their
dog to a dog park, but then they're like super
protective of the dog. What's the point of the dog park?
(01:30):
There are some people that bring their dog to the
dog park and their dog is way too aggressive, or
their dog's a humper. Hey, but I want you to picture.
You've gone to a dog park and you have the
big dog section and the little dog section, right, and somehow,
(01:52):
twice a year the big dog section and the little
dog section, the fences down, and and the jets, well
they're a Pomeranian a right. All they're doing is yapping,
and they went on nit at your feet, right, and
(02:13):
they fight with each other and they bark at other dogs.
And the Patriots for a long time were that big
kind of regal almost like a malemute. Uh maybe like
a great Dane I think Saint Bernard where, don't get
(02:35):
me wrong, like not the perfect dog, you know, whereas
other dogs had gone to be doodles and didn't shed
as Saint Bernard's. They still shed, they still had that
dog wet dog smell when when they got wet. But
it was still a great damn dog. Right, That's what
(02:55):
this rivalry was for a long time. A Pomeranian and
the great a Pomeranian and Saint Bernard. And now, if
we're totally honest, I guess last year, last year of
that was a really really old dog that they had
to kind of put down right with the pats. And
(03:20):
now it's a new dog, but nobody thinks it's a
great dog. It's like it's kind of a copy of
a copy of a cop it's at four B. If
you know anything about dog breeds and mixed and doodles
and stuff, you know what I'm talking about. And the
Jets just another yappy dog, just another yeppie dog. But
(03:40):
what we do have to talk about is this CJ.
Stroud Caleb Williams interaction after the Texans beat the Chicago
Bears on Monday Night football. Here's this little short exchange.
So game's over. Stroud wasn't great, but badly outplayed Caleb Williams.
(04:00):
And of course c J. Stroud was a first round
picked last year. Kayler Williams is the number one pick
in the draft this year. Here was their exchange, you know,
me and Caleb.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
I don't know. I was not trying to like treat
him like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Hey go on, I'm taking those takes.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah yeah, look here larf those mistakes and everything that
you've got, Bro, is are you already? Bro?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
You don't be a hell of a player in this league?
Got bar boy. I appreciate Michel.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
So there are some that said he he being c J. Stroud,
little broad, Kayleb Williams. There are some that said, Kayleb
Williams blew off CJ. Stroud, Right, And if you don't
know urban dictionary, little bro is to treat somebody as
if they're inferior. They're like a low lower social status.
(04:47):
Oh hey, little bro, how are you? Yeah, the big fellas,
we got to go down and play some football. You
will see you later. That's little brow. And and I
think there's probably a little bit of that that CJ's did, Like, hey, dude,
you've been in the league like one year longer than me.
We were just playing in college the year that you
(05:09):
guys came up short at Ohio State. We ended up
we end up having a turnaround year. The year before
that at Oklahoma, we had a great year. You know,
last year obviously was not. But now you're treating me
like I'm your I'm your little brother. That's really what
it's like. And then for Kleb Williams, I think he
(05:31):
did kind of blow him off. Now, look, if we're
reasonable people, c J. Stroud is only doing what he's
seen a thousand other quarterbacks do. They always go to midfield,
they always go and seek out, unless Britt's Tom Brady
who loses the game, they go and seek out the
other quarterback, shake his hand and they say something which
usually doesn't mean anything to anybody, but the losing quarterback
(05:52):
usually acts like he's giving them the bank codes to
the largest amount of wealth in North America. You listen
attentively and then you say I got you. You wrap
it up, you hug it up, and you, hey man,
say hi to your fam, take care of yourself, good
luck this year, we'll see you again. Like that, all
(06:15):
the same things. So I think some of it is CJ.
Stroud just doing what everybody's always done, and it's just
kind of weird, Like, Okay, I'm the veteran now so
I guess I gotta give the advice. Okay, that's not
weird at all, sort of. And for Caleb Williams, I'm
(06:37):
sure he's sitting there going like, dude, we just lost
a game. I didn't play great, I'm not happy, and
now I gotta shake this dude's hand. Remember this is
the same Caleb Williams that last year when things would
go wrong. One time he was hugging his mom. One
time he's covering his head with the So this has
actually improved behavior from Caleb Williams upon losing a game.
(07:00):
But it was awkward. It was definitely awkward. Here's Stroud.
He was asked about the narrative that he was condescending
towards Williams. Here's his answer.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
You know me and Caleb, I don't. I was not
trying to like treat him like I was trying to
like little bro him or nothing. He knows that too.
I have a ton of respect for him. I told
him I respect for him. But I had so much,
so many guys coming to me after games last year,
and that meant to work. Meant the world to me
that those guys even thought about getting the advice. So
I'll just try to get back to what the game
is given to me. So I wish him the best man.
(07:32):
I want him to do amazing in this league. I
think he will. I think that he'll get his groove.

If you listen to that answer, listen to that answer,
(07:58):
c J. Stroud is telling you I had so many
guys come up to me. He's just doing what he's
seen everybody else do. And then he's given out some
advice that he's just kind of going with on the fly.
That's it. That's it, and we all do I I
we kind of talked to this yesterday with Media Day.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Right.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
It's like, my goal as a college basketball coach is
not to be the cliche college basketball coach, but sometimes
you become the cliche college basketball coach.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
You know.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
I was with all of the contemporaries, all the other
coaches in the league, and everyone's complaining about something, and
I had to just guard myself off against complaining about
anything because I've made it to myself I'm not going
to complain. But everybody else did. It became normalized. That's
what's happened with this sort of behavior. End of the day.
(08:48):
If Caleb Williams doesn't want to be a little broad,
he's got to grow up. And at least CJ. Stroud
feels like there's some sort of responsibility to little brow
him or to mentor him.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
If you will be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern
noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Doug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio. So the news of
the week is probably Bryce Young getting benched in only
his second season. Have to be the number one overall
pick in the NFL draft last year disappointing first year,
got off to a bad start. This year looks like
he's lost his confidence. So we don't know what it
(09:34):
looks like when he is confident what he tops out at,
but it's not good enough so far. Here's Panthers head
coach Dave Canalis when he's yes, if the team is
trading Bryce.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
Young, yeah, that's not something we're really considering. You know,
we have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now,
with guys that have experienced, so we love where we're
at and we're all all hands on deck. We're folks
on playing the Raiders this week.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, so they're going to try, okay and let him
take a breath and see if they can fix his confidence.
I just I don't know how that works in season,
And we've talked about this a lot, a lot, especially
revolving around Ben Simmons. You know Ben Simmons, it's more
(10:18):
than just his back. Obviously, it's his shot, but all
of it comes from a lack of confidence, and the
only way to get that back is one work, work, work, work,
work too. Then you've got to work in games, and
it's really hard in the NFL to work rework your confidence.
When you're like, hey, dude, we got to win some
games here, we can't. Nobody says, Okay, we're gonna play
two hand touch until you get your confidence and then
(10:39):
we'll play. But you can't keep throwing them out there
because well it was just getting worse, not getting better.
So I don't know how it works. I don't know
if you can get it back, and if you can
get it back, I don't know if you can get
it back in Carolina. But we'll have no idea if
he can play quarterback or if he can't play quarterback
(11:01):
in the next you know, when he's not playing. On
the other hand, if he were to play right now,
he's just a shell of his former self but does
not appear at this point in time. As so they're
going to trade him because if you trade him, you're
going to trade him in his absolute low value, low
low value. Stut gott Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Patriots
(11:27):
Jets just does not doesn't do it. But I will
say it's one of those games now where the Patriots
are in kind of the opposite position that they always
used to be in. Right, they used to be that
you can't lose to the Jets. Now if they beat
the Jets, imagine the Jets sitting there and going like, wait,
(11:49):
we lost the Patriots. They are the underdog. They're the
ones who will maintain the confidence because how many times
to Belichick win? Even though I know Belichick is not
the coach. I think this is a really, really even matchup,
and the Jets have on paper a better defense. They're
(12:11):
just not playing better. They obviously have a better quarterback,
but he is forty and this is a quick turnaround,
and one would think when you have a quick turnaround,
it's gonna be harder for the older players. The guess
is that Jets win. The problem with that is is
a couplefold. But one is that the Patriots as dogs,
(12:32):
true dogs, is a different role for them. We don't
know how either side reacts.
Speaker 6 (12:38):
You know, Doug, the Jets, we talk about scheduling a lot,
and when you talk about scheduling, you talk about opponents.
The Jets are playing their third game in eleven days.
There's absolutely no reason for it. They also have a
trip to London coming up in I think like two
weeks or so. So what the NFL did to them
to put him on the West Coast on a Monday
night game then have him on the road Sunday at time? See,
(13:00):
so now they're just finally getting home. I'd rather have
been New England play at home last week, go on
the road this week. The Jets are finally getting there,
you know, back settled and now they got to play
on a Thursday night. Yeah, like yeah, the NFL schedule
makers did the Jets absolutely no favors in the first
part of the season.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Well, on the other hand, Dan, I agree with you,
but you know what is behind that, right, People want
to see Aaron Rodgers on TV. Yes, yes, and they're
in New York and nobody wants to see the Giants.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yes, But to play a Monday.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
No, no, no. Listen, you're right, Okay, you're you're right. But
part of this is like, if you didn't want these games,
maybe you shouldn't ask for all this attention. They clearly
wanted the attention. I always joked that they're two time
defending offseason champions, right, and it's because that offseason gets
(13:52):
them attention. Even hasan Reddit god gets the attention. Mark
Dominic joints as former general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
We know that it's about eyeballs in front of a
TV set. Plus you have the pecking order of who
picks what games. But what's your reaction to the Jets
three games in eleven days as they played tonight.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Maybe they were worried that Aaron was going to make
it through all the games. That way, they got a
chance to see him before since it went wrong. I mean,
I think that they're you know, obviously it's the New
York market and it's Aaron Rodgers, and they know that's
going to draw eyes, and it's going to draw fantasy
football watchers because it's hard not to sit there and
think that people don't have Garrett Wilson and Aaron Rodgers
and you know, Breeze Haul on their fantasy depth charts,
which is another way. So you got two different big
(14:34):
polling areas to be able to get these teams eyes
on these games. And I think that's why they put
them up early. Maybe concerned about Aaron being healthy, so
that just put the jets on early and let every
see it and know that you're going to get the
New York audience, but you'relsing gets the fantasy football world.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
No question. Okay, what about Aaron Rodgers? You see him
for two weeks, how's he look?
Speaker 5 (14:55):
I expect, you know, it's been weird. I think the
whole league has been kind of interesting in terms of
the passing yards and the running yards and how it's
been skewed in terms of so much more. There's so
much less passing and so much more running. I think
we'll see that open up as the season continues to unfold.
I think Aaron's played good. I didn't think. I thought
Garrett Wilson might have even a bigger role than what
(15:16):
he's had so far, and I expect I think tonight
against the Patriots, I think you'll see Aaron. I think
you'll see, you know, Garrett Wilson, I think, take a
big step in terms of the guy that I thought
we'd see all season long. When his production totals I
think are going to be pretty incredible tonight.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
How concerned should the Bears be that, like, can't the
Williams hasn't been particularly accurate nor particularly good as the
season to start it.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
I think it's concerning. I think it's very right to
be concerned. You know, Doug, we watched him in the
preseason be in consistent accers. You know, there's one thing
in terms of making bad decisions, there's another in terms of,
you know, bad placement. And you know right now he's
kind of in.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
A little bit of a boat.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
When he misses, he misses by a lot, a lot
more even expect a normal passer to be and so
the thing I always talked about in the offseason, and
I know he had me on and we talked about it.
I was worried he'd think the game is too easy, right,
he would had so much success, this is gonna be easy.
I'm just gonna fly through it. I think that's part
of the problem. I think that he kind of walked
in the NFL thinking this is going to be easy,
(16:18):
and now he suddenly hit in adversity and he's stealing
it and it's eating him up inside because he's so
confident in kind of this personality. I would be very concerned.
I know that none of the rookie quarterbacks are playing
great right now, Bo Nicks or anything like that, and
we'll see as he continues to go. But I think
it's a bigger concern. I think what's Will Levis has
done in here two is more concerning. But I think
(16:39):
Caleb Bullings certainly, there's there's been nothing really to latch onto.
And when you see the players around who get frustrated too,
that's a bad sign obviously.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
You know, you know what there hasn't been. You know,
when you play golf and you have that one shot
that back. Right, there hasn't been that one Like, uh,
oh okay, right, he hasn't. Is that fair? Is that
a fair? Parel?
Speaker 5 (17:00):
Well, I think it's a very good parallel because I
think you're right. You know, you get that chip in
or you get a long tight and you're like a
lover or hit a big drive and you're like, oh
I love this game, and then you forget me.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Right and then but then it's as fans or scouts,
we're just looking for that one play like oh okay, wait, wait,
wait this this guy's a little different. He'll he'll figure
it out. But we haven't even gotten there yet. Okay,
let's let's let's get to Tennessee. They welcome in the
Packers this weekend. I mean again, outsiders like will Levis too,
just back to back weeks, just ridiculous decisions that end up,
(17:30):
you know, costing them a game this past week. But
what is more concerning about will Levis even than Caleb Williams.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
I just think that the decision, like when it's crunch
time is it's like he panics and his head turns
off and it's just like, well, I'll just do something,
and it's something has been horrific and terrible for him. Really,
I think costing him two weeks. I think they could
be two and oh if he just doesn't play outside
of himself. And so I think when you see a
quarterback just kind of completely lose the concept of like
(18:01):
what he did this week with that shuffle path as
he's getting sacked, you know, you just got to understand
and you know, fight a different fight. And right now
I think he's starting to try to figure out, I
got to make a play, I got to do something,
and that's the wrong mentality as a young quarterback.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
It just scares me because Caleb Williams isn't hitting passes
and isn't but but will Levis is physically losing the game,
first football team at the one position where that's the
one thing can't happen.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
I agree with you. It's it's it's not good at all.
You know, I did want to ask you something. This
is this a little bit I don't know a little bit.
Far Afield stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Mark Dominic is our guests. Course a long time member
of the front office, Tambay Buccaneers general manager, and he
joins us every week here on the show. Uh, Packers
(18:51):
beat the Colts last week, and I actually went to
the game, and I can tell you that Anthony Richardson
just did not look like an NFL quarterback. Now, part
of it was they're not really running him. And here's
the guy with four four speed, with a body like
a Greek god, like he's a faster Cam Newton in
terms of as an athlete, and yet they're not running him.
(19:12):
Shane Stiken ran Jalen Hurts a ton when he's the
offensive coordinator. Why do you think they're not running Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
I think the injury thing has gotten him scared to
do it. I think they're worried about him staying on
the football field, so they're trying to avoid the things
that might get him off the football field, which is
actually the reason why he drafted him in the first place.
So you know, they just got to understand it. And
Chris Ballard's you know, as we've talked about, I think
it's close to seven different quarterbacks seven years in a row.
And you know, last year, obviously Richardon didn't have the
(19:43):
one injury. He had multiple injuries, but finally the one
that cost him the season. I think they're scared that
he might be a little more, you know, of a
glass bottle, and that they don't want to see broke
or fractured, instead of trying to be more protective, and
I think you have to do the opposite. If he
can't do it, he can't do it. If I was
the general manager there, I'd be like, let's go put
this guy in position to be able to use his
legs and still throw the ball. Lamark Jackson was able
(20:06):
to rookie year.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
Purpose of hiring the coach, the coach who is the
coordinator for a guy who could run and pass it?
What is the point?
Speaker 5 (20:15):
No, I think I think you're spot on. I think
it's completely all backwards because I think they're they're right
now they're paralyzed about worried about him getting hurt and
not understanding that if you don't show something pretty soon here,
you're gonna get fired because of lack of wins and
losses on the board. And I think that you've got
to take play to the player's advantage, and right now
they're not. And it's surprising to me that they've decided to, like,
(20:36):
you know, keep the training wheels on and make sure
that he's you know, healthy, and and and I think
that that's a terrible decision. And I think it's hurting
the obviously it's hurting the team, but turning the development
of him too, because that's just part of his natural
game that you want to see. You would expect him
to be a thousand yard rusher and still hopefully throw
the ball for twenty five hundred yards this year.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
You want to know my parallel, my metaphor for that one.
That's like, I mean, you live in Tampa. That's like
having a beautiful day. You see somebody pull to a light.
They got a convertible and they got the top up. Well,
what you do? Put your top It's a seventy five
degrees right, Like, put the top down? What are you
(21:16):
doing anyway? Okay, what about the rams? They that team
has built around two star wide receivers. They're both hurt.
They're both hurt. What do you do there?
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Yeah, you know, I don't think there's much you can do.
I mean, they've they've tried to transition this roster in
front of us with a veteran quarterback and a bunch
of young players. They still have a bunch of young players,
specifically on defense. You know, you have a new defensive
coordinator this year with Rae Morris obviously in Atlanta now
to the head coach, and I think it's just going
to take a little bit more time. I'm not panic mode.
I don't like I mean, what Arizona did to them
(21:49):
was impressive, and we talked about Arizona being a sleeper
team this year, and I still think they're going to
be that sleeper team this year in the NFC. But
I don't think you can panic yet because I still
trust Sean McVay offense, Cooka Nicole will be back out there,
Cooper Cup hopefully we'll get back out there. I still
think there's enough talent on this team that they're going to,
you know, kind of be in that seven and ten
(22:10):
type of range nine and eight. I thought last year
was really surprising based off of how young they were
across the board, and they've added a lot more news
to it. But I think the one thing you're not
seeing is, you know, the tight end positions not really
having any impact, and they haven't been able to really
run the volume. It's the way you would hope. I
think one other thing that their left tackle has been
suspended the first two weeks. I think that's hurt them
(22:31):
as well. He'll be back this week coming off of suspension,
and I think that's important to get Jackson back on
the field because he's been a very good left tackle
even as a fun drafted free agent.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of Mark Dominic, spent twenty years in the NFL
for own officers and scouting former gentle manager of the
tamp Bay Buccaneers. Remind me, what was your uh, what
were your thoughts when we were getting ready for the
draft last year and you try kind to figure out, okay,
(23:02):
you have we have other quarterbacks that are diminutive, all right,
but now you have one that just kind of a
smaller human being but check so many boxes in Bryce Young.
What was your evail of Bryce Young before he got
to league.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
Yeah, I mean in terms of leadership and character and
the confidence, it was high. You know, you felt really
good about it, you know, and you thought part of
it was you know, you've seen some shorter quarterbacks go
in the league. Kyler Murray obviously, Drew Bree, some of
the other guys that are not big guys, but you
hadn't seen as much as the lack of thickness. To me,
I liked I did like Bryce Young. I'm not going
(23:39):
to sit here and act like well, I was worried
about all these things. He's lost his confidence completely and
the players all see it and feel it. But I
think the thing that you had to decide was could
you handle that frame and can that frame handle the
National Football League? And that was the big debate, and
that's where I struggled, you know, with Carolina given up
so much collateral to go get that. When you again,
(24:00):
one of the things we do in organizations is you
focus on the drafts forward. He say, who's available in
the next draft, and do I need to panic here
and go get it somebody because the next draft is
terrible or the next draft got some potential impossibilities that
I don't need to do that. I think they panicked,
and you know, the GM obviously is no longer there,
the head coach is no longer there. I think they
panicked and said, hey, look, we've got to fix this position,
(24:21):
and this is the guy that we think can do it.
They probably didn't like Will Levis and they realized Stroud.
They couldn't get their mind around Stroud or whatever it
was about Straut that they didn't like me. It was
how to state bug. But they felt like every Ohio
State quarterback now has not played well. But I think
when you have a guy that's undersized and small like that,
you know to go up and get him and to
give up back coming to collateral, obviously it's it's bit
(24:44):
Carolina the tail and we're going to see it probably
a different team this week when they go to Dalton.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Okay, so you mentioned his confidence, because whether he's good
enough or not good enough, you'll never know if you're
If you lose that confidence, right, can you get it back?
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (24:59):
I think you can work on again back. I think
Justin Field feels better right now, right in terms of
a little more confidence in what he was last year.
We're certainly seeing Caleb Williams, like we just talked about
at the beginning. Part of that problem that they're having
there is obviously the you know, the pass protection is
not holding up very well either, even though I think
Kylen's hold on the ball a little. But Justin fielders
and they're laughing at Caleb Williams right now. Going I
feel your pain, and now justin Fields is at least
(25:22):
making a case to say, hey, look, you know see
once Russell's back, Holy, there's a lot of packages they
can use for me because I'm showing everybody in the
league I can still throw the ball, I can still
run the ball. And so I think he's slowly getting
his confidence back. So I don't think it's lost forever.
I think it's more of gun shy. It's hard to
lose Doug when you've become gunshy in terms of, like
you know, David Carr. They're getting hit so many times
(25:46):
that he just became gun shy and assaults, you know,
the seeing ghosts or feeling ghosts that I don't think
you can overcome because that's just kind of your internal clock.
But I think confidence you can build back into your body.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Okay, Sam Garald seems to have his confidence back. But
we've seen some of this before, right, first couple of
games in Carolina, before Christian McCaffrey got hurt. Last year
in San Francisco, he played more just like a backup,
just not to lose. But now they're winning games and
I've always been a fan. Is this sustainable? What we're
(26:17):
seeing from Sam Donald.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Well, I think the good news is to your point,
and you have been and I know you've been very
you know pro Sam Donald at least willing to stick
with him in terms of what's happened. I think the
big news for Sam Donald is he got into an
offense understanding hand, got to understand it, and then got
to go implement it in Minnesota and staying in the
same playbook, staying in the same world, you know, an
(26:40):
offense that so many people want to have a part of.
And I think having that back to back years of
that has really paid off for Sam and it's allowed
him to kind of really hone in on I'm not
worried about like burbage. I'm not worried about what the
concepts are, what we're trying to do here. Now I
get to spend extra time, you know, just working on
it and you know, be able to show what I
can do. And I think that that extra time being
in Serran Sistem and then transferred right over to the
(27:01):
same system was a huge decision for Sam and his
agent and they made the right call.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Mark, great stuff today, really really good, Really appreciate you
join us and at only two weeks in, We've made
a lot of definitive statements. We'll see, of course, I'm
sure we'll be proven wrong this week in Week three.
That's the way the NFL usually works. But love when
you join us, awesome football talk.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
Thanks for joining us, Enjoy the game, Doug, thanks for
having me on.
Speaker 4 (27:23):

Speaker 4 (27:50):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Dan, what do you got?
Speaker 3 (27:59):
Doug? It's a Thursday, and that means I feel a
draft all right?
Speaker 6 (28:07):
Getting said for a fun weekend in college football. That's
what we're gonna talk about today. The draft order is this,
and then I'll give you the topic. Iowa Sam numero Uno,
Doug second, I'll be third, Jason fourth on the swing picks.
And then we'll reverse it in the orders. Today we
are drafting Swing, the college football program you wish would
(28:30):
come back to national prominence.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
Swing.
Speaker 7 (28:34):
I'm gonna start it off with the Miami Hurricanes. We
can't say they're back yet. After they're in the top
ten just this year. We remember all the arrogance, the
cockiness that they played with, you know, the bad boy perception. Uh,
it's Miami Florida. I mean it's it's you know, it's
hot down there.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
It's the U, it's the you.
Speaker 8 (28:56):
It's the you.
Speaker 7 (28:56):
And so you know, I remember when Mark Rick was
coach at my I mean he like everyone's like, oh
is Miami back? When they start out like eight to oh?
And they ended up kind of tapering off that year.
And Mario Christobal has it rolling right now with cam
Ward at quarterback. But we can't say that they're back
back yet.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
I agree.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
And so the Miami Hurricanes. They're good for college football.
We need a villain, can't just be Colorado. So Miami Hurricanes.
I'm drafting number one.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Doug, you are up second.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
This is a hard one because you can't do I
don't think you can do Florida State. They were undefeated
last year. Okay, I want to do Virginia Tech. And
my logic is a couple. Virginia Tech was that they've
had Bruce Smith, they'd had some good but when they
had Beamer Ball on Thursday nights, when they had the
(29:48):
Big East Football Conference and they would play schools like
the you enter Sandman Lane Stadium, I just I love
Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech reminds me of a Virginia version
of Oklahoma State, where you know, they used to have
the two side stadium and then they built Lane Stadium.
(30:10):
It's beautiful now. Same thing with Boone Pickens Stadium.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
You know.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Oklahoma State's an AG school. Virginia Tech. You know, obviously
they have they have some they have a Rotzi element
to it as well. I just Virginia Tech. That's my answer.
I'd like them to be more proper.
Speaker 6 (30:25):
I'll tell you what. I'm glad you said that. And
I was going to save this for the press, but
I'm not. I don't need to now. Metallica announced today
that their tour heading into twenty twenty five, they will
play a one night only show in Blacksburg, Virginia at
Lane Stadium.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
May here's a question, real question. Okay, do they play
that as their entry song or do they play that
as their encore?
Speaker 8 (30:53):
Right, I'd say encore? What makes it the last song
of the night?
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Step? Yeah, well you can play it to who the
Bell tolls?
Speaker 3 (30:58):
Right?
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Or they have they have so many other hits that
sounds right except for in Lane Stadium they come into
that song. Yeah, why wouldn't Metallica come into that song?
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Sure?
Speaker 6 (31:08):
How would they just only play that song? And it's
just a three commendition of it?
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (31:14):
All right, I'm going to go a little off the
board here. I think when they're good, nobody likes them.
Ready for this?
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Yeah? Byu? Okay? If BYU, I.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Don't know if a nobody likes them, I think nobody
respects them. They think they don't play any defense. That
that's always been the thing.
Speaker 6 (31:31):
And usually you know, their schedule is one that is
is is lighter. Even their nineteen eighty three national championship
is still disputed. You know, a great rivalry with Utah,
But even nationally when they do well, I think that
I don't think b YU gets embraced a ton.
Speaker 9 (31:49):
What Ty Depmer won the Heisman? Sure wasn't There're another
one of the eighties that won the Heisman.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
Had Steve Young, a Jim mcmahn. They they had quarterback
after quarterback after quarterback.
Speaker 9 (32:00):
I think Dan did me a favor. He left me Nebraska.
I think that's an easy one, right Nebraska. If he
lived in the eighties and nineties, they were a dominant
football program. They've been largely dormant for many, many, many years.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
Yep.
Speaker 9 (32:15):
And they look like they have a shot this year
of maybe bringing it back to prominence. We'll see what
happens when the conference schedule happens. So I'm gonna go
with Nebraska four and then you know, I'm gonna go
at local flavor. I'm gonna go about twenty twenty minutes
down the road without traffic. UCLA being a national prominent
(32:35):
team happened in the late eighties. Troy Yikman, Kaye McNown.
You know they were a national program under Terry Donahue.
I want to say.
Speaker 8 (32:49):
Winning Rose Bulls a Rose Bull.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
They went a Rose bull under Terry Donne.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
I believe it was beating Iowa.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Yeah, I think they won one Rose Bowl under Terry Donahue.
They had more players in the pros than anybody else
for a long time, but I you know they it
was there was a stretch there where they won you know, nine, eight,
ten and ten games in the in the mid to
late eighties. You are right, but yes, I apologize, I'm wrong.
(33:20):
They won three out of four Rose Balls.
Speaker 9 (33:22):
Yeah, I know they won three out of four Rose Bulls.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
They beat Illinois, I think in yeah with Jeff George.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Right, No, Jack Trudeau, my bad. Yeah, a nice hole,
solid poll.
Speaker 6 (33:33):
Yes, but I also is right in the era that
I was starting to you know, watch college football and
got into college football, and a team that I believe
that UCLA did play in a Rose Bowl. I'm gonna
say it for you, Iowa, Sam Iowa. Let's make Iowa
relevant because they are always a topic of conversation much different.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Like if Penn State's good in the Big Ten, I
don't think we're talking about Penn State.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
But when Iowa was really good, I think we are
talking about Iowa.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
So I'm gonna put Iowa on that list.
Speaker 8 (34:05):
I like that it works, all right.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
Doug Florida Gators.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
It's great, Toby uh Florida Gate, and they got the
Gator chump and they play in the swamp and they
had the ball coach head ball coach. And then they
had Urban Meyer Gators.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
All right, Sam, your last pick.
Speaker 7 (34:25):
I'm gonna close it out with Georgia Tech, who had
actually a national championship in nineteen ninety, at least a
shared one. I had some brief spurts of greatness under
Paul Johnson, but they've just been sort of whole home
ever since.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
That is game.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
That was that was, that was.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
This game.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
Time walked it off against the Giants.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
All Right, we'll recap the Orioles when next to Doug
Atley Show, Fox Sports Radio
