Speaker 2 (01:13):
Week seventeen in the NFL is here. Bunch of big
games Saturday Night, Lions and Cowboys lines are already clinched
the NFC North, but there's still is a chance and
it may not be as outside of a chance as
you think. If the Lions went out and that would
include a win over the Cowboys and they get some
help which could be a Rams victory over the Niners

(01:36):
in Week eighteen, and it's not as far fetched as
you would think. You know, there could be a path
for the Lions to get home field advantage and also
need the Eagles to drop a game, but a lot
to play for. On Saturday night in Dallas, you've got
a Marque game between the Dolphins and Ravens. You have
the Chiefs and Bengals playing in an AFC Championship rematch,

(01:58):
and then on Sunday night football because there is no
Monday night because of New Year's Day and college football
taking center stage. Week seventeen will end on Sunday night
with the Minnesota Vikings taking on the Green Bay Packers Manti.
You see this NFC North showdown for two teams right
now who are both vying for a playoff berth in

(02:19):
the NFC. Unfortunately for them, they are on the outside
looking in as we speak is they are both seven
and eight. But when you think of Packers at Vikings,
what pops into your mind with this matchup?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Oh, that the Packers need to win, all right, the
Packers need to win.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Jordan Love, Yeah, yes, it's.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Just because the Minnesota Vikings have are in this position,
and I think most of us are a little bit
surprised just because of the quarterback injuries and what they've
gone through, right, So you just wouldn't expect them to
be in this position. Hats off to them, Hats off
to Kevin O'Connell for being able to manage this season,
losing Kirk Cousins and all of that. And then you

(03:01):
have the Packers who started They won their first game,
and I remember I picked up Jordan Love on Fantasy
I was I gotta pick he had a good game,
and then they kind of like dipped. But then they
got a couple of games together and Jordan Love and
the Packers looked good and then they've lost again. So
they've been like up and down, up and down, but
they're figuring things out for the future.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Long term roller coaster of love for the Green Bay Packers,
and a lot of it has honestly been because of
their defense. Yeah, and the defensive coordinator, Joe Barry. I
thought it was very telling when we had Josh Lucas,
the former director of player personnel for the Chicago Bears,
told us yesterday on the show because Joe Berry has
been the target of a lot of venom from Packer

(03:41):
fans this season because of how bad the defense is.
Josh Lucas told us yesterday that when they hired Joe
Berry as their defensive coordinator, taking over for Mike Petton,
that the Bears front office celebrated like they didn't they
they thought it would be good for them that Green
Bay was hiring Joe Barry, and Joe's been in the crosshairs.

(04:01):
I think that's a big portion of what plays in.
There are a lot of Packer Aaron Rodgers versus Matt
Lafleur and Brian Gudikuins like that Robie like Lafleura, Goodacuins
could get the last laugh in all of this because
Rogers and the Jets obviously with his injury going home,
but green Bay could make that playoff push.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
You know, you just gave me like a feeling of like,
oh my goodness. At the start of the season, the
conversation was Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and the Jets
and what's going to happen in that conversation out the
window in four plays?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yes, that was this year.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
That's crazy. It seems so far.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Away, but it still went on for Green Bay because
they had their holy place. It wasn't you know, like
with with New England and Tom Brady and the Patriots,
you know, going in and being competitive and Brady just
takes off and goes and wins the super Bowl and
kind of like all right, well that's over it. Yeah,
that was dope, Like this one is continuing. This one

(04:53):
even continued after the injury. And I don't blame you, you
know for talking about like this is a green Bay
angle even though both seven and eight, because I think
that that's fair and I completely set you up for
because I felt that you were probably gonna go at
the green Bay angle. I think this game is totally
about the Minnesota Vikings. And I think what the Minnesota
Vikings are telling you is this is that if they

(05:14):
have their druthers, if they have their choice, Kirk Cousins
won't be back in twenty twenty four. And the reason
I say this, and there's a lot of Kirk Cousins hate,
it's funny there's this small group that loves Kirk Cousins.
But he's been an easy target because we talk about
Kirk Cousins under the lights. What is Kirk touns Like
he went and beat the forty nine ers this year,

(05:35):
like there have been opportunities. I think the narrative is
changed on Kirk Cousins in winning big games because we
saw it and then he goes in ruptures as Achilles tendon.
But there is a decision about the future. Heck, when
the Vikings we thought weren't in it, we were talking
maybe the Vikings will trade Kirk Cousins to the Jets
because the Jets look like the playoff ready team. What
happened this week, I think tells you a lot about

(05:57):
where Minnesota is thinking. They are starting Jaron Hall at
quarterback in a must win game for your playoffs, and
Jaron Hall is the rookie quarterback out of BYU that
will get a second career start against an NFL team
coming up on Sunday Night Sunday Night Football, the Minnesota

(06:19):
Vikings have decided to start a player again. It was
just one start in his NFL career and that start
ended prematurely because of the concussion that he suffered against
the Atlanta Falcons. And he's thrown ten career passes. Fifth
round pick out of BYU gets the start in the
biggest game, and Monzie this is a big deal because

(06:41):
I know Nick Mullins threw four interceptions against the Lions
this past weekend. He also threw for four hundred yards.
So you don't have TJ. Hockinson who's out for the year.
So now maybe try to rely on ty Chandler Alexander
Madison in the running game. But what this also does

(07:01):
is this sets you up. Just think about this narrative.
Let's think Monday morning. It's January first, twenty twenty four,
and the Vikings win behind Jaren Hall, and now they're
in the thick of the playoff hunt, and now they're
gaining momentum because of their rookie quarterback. Do you think
they're really going to go back and resign Kirk Cousins,
considering that Jaren Hall was their backup. He was their

(07:22):
plan B. There was no veteran. They acquired Josh Dobbs
because they lost Kirk Cousins and didn't have Nick Mullins available,
like Jared Hall was their plan B with all of this,
and then he gets you thrust into action against the Falcons,
has a pretty decent drive at the start of the game,
but then ends up getting knocked out. They're putting a

(07:44):
lot of their eggs in this basket and right now
they need some help to get in because of the
teams that are ahead of them. They are game back.
But at Jared Hall plays well for the Minnesota Vikings.
I think this is Kevin o'collen and the Vikings saying
this is going to be our guy for twenty twenty
four because I can't figure out any other way why

(08:04):
you would and they believe that he could do the
job because they can't figure out any other way why
you wouldn't play Nick Mullins or Josh Dobbson what is
such a crucial game on Sunday night?

Speaker 3 (08:13):
I mean, I hear what you're saying it just seems
like a small sample size to think of next year
for if you're thinking just this one game. If he
does good in this game, we've got we're set for
the future. And it's hard to believe that they're putting
all of their eggs in one basket for a small
sample size being this game. Maybe maybe they just want

(08:33):
to see what he can do. I still think there's
a huge chance Kirk Cousins returns to Minnesota and as
their starting quarterback. I still think that I don't see
how you let him go so easily, unless you know
he chooses to go elsewhere because money is being offered elsewhere,
and you know, I get that, but I don't I
don't see how you can just on one game. Maybe

(08:54):
they're looking, like you said, they want to see what
he can do, and this will be a good game.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
It allows them an If Jaren Hall performs, and he
performs well and does it on this stage, in this scenario,
there's gonna be a lot of good will, and there's
gonna be a lot of momentum. And honestly, for as
good as Kirk Cousins has been from Minnesota, there is
still the price tag. You're paying Jaren Hall fifth round

(09:22):
pick money and now he's doing some of the things
that you would want to do. He's not a better
quarterback than Kirk Cousins. That's not that's completely not debatable,
but for what they look for in the future, this
has the ability to gain momentum if they end up
with even if they don't make the playoffs, if they
win these final two games with Jaren Hall as their

(09:44):
quarterback and he performs well, it makes their decision a
lot easier. And I don't care who you are outside
of the NFL, if you are on the verge of
free agency and your team has not locked you up
to a contract, that probably means that there is a
question on how they want to move forward. And to
have an NF situation where a team wants to not
pay a quarterback as opposed to paying a quarterback, that's

(10:06):
not becoming the norm. Right, young, go younger at the position,
Get him on the rookie contract, and even though they
were round yeah, yeah, pay other positions to make your team.
And if Jaron Hall is that guy, then you've got
three years to figure it out. That's what I thought
was so telling because I was so surprised Monsei to
hear on Wednesday that Jaren Hall was just named the starter.
This despite Nick Mullins's turnovers, Josh Dobbs hasn't worn out

(10:30):
as welcome. It's just things finally caught up to them
in Minnesota. I just think that this lays the groundwork
for the possibility of a future, you know, the future
of the Minnesota Vikings. And guess what if Jaren Hall
isn't good, doesn't play.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Well, and it just complicates everything more for them.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
It actually simplifies it, yeah, because it says, all right,
he was a fifth round pick. Look, you know, we
need Kirk. We'll pay Kirk, and Jaren Hall isn't maybe
our guy right now, but maybe he stays in the
system a little bit longer. But if he has success,
he can make the decision a lot easier for them
to move on from Kirk Cousins because now there's going

(11:07):
to be some Jaron Hall hype that follows into the offseason,
and then you're not paying Kirk Cousins north of forty
million dollars.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
So you know, what you're saying is super logical, and
I hear it. I still don't necessarily agree because I
think one, it's a small sample size and based on
what Minnesota has experienced with backup quarterbacks like Josh Dobbs
having a stellar two three weeks and then it all
kind of went downhill. I feel like that's still fresh.
So here you have and maybe it is more of like,

(11:35):
let's see what we have in him, and maybe we
do keep him in the system next year. I just
don't see how like two games it's like, oh, we're
moving on from Kirk Cousins, even though everything you're saying
it's super logical. I just think what's happened this year
with backup quarterbacks of several of them having successful one, two,
three weeks and then they kind.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Of fall off. It's it's what we've seen.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
So how can you I hear the momentum thing, but
the momentum thing at the end of the year, when
then you're start over again. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I think they are what they do want to see.
I agree what they have with jarn Hall. I just
don't think just because he has two successful games and
that they win, that it makes their decision easier. I
don't think if.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
They were four and twelve, I think it's a different story.
They're sitting there in the thick of the playoffs right
now and four and eleven because it would be fifteen games.
They're seven and eight right now, a game back of
Seattle in the Rams for the final wild card. So
if Seattle loses to Pittsburgh, things get pretty interesting. Guess
who the Rams have to play in Week eighteen? The

(12:32):
San Francisco forty nine ers, who could have a lot
to play for. That's not a given. They have, their
playoff hopes are alive, and well, they may get a
Detroit team that has nothing to play for in Week eighteen,
and then you're having to win that game. Like these
are monumental games that I just don't think you hand
over the keys to your rookie quarterback if a you

(12:56):
don't believe in him, and they've shown that they believed
in him by by having him as their backup quarterback,
but B you don't hand them over in a game
like this. It is much easier to be like, you
know what, we lost Nick Mullins again, turn the ball
over three times, we're knocked out of the playoffs, so
be it. But to be like, hey, rook lead us
there and then you get people excited about it and

(13:17):
you get about the future. Yeah. I think, I really
think that there's something there, and I think that kirk
cousins future will end up being decided on whether he
returns to the Vikings or not, likely on Sunday night,
and then likely what happens in the week eighteen.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
You know, think it's as simple as let's just see
what he has. Especially losing TJ. Hawkinson, that's a big
that's a big piece for them. So I just I
hear you again, logical, but I feel like it's this,
This is not gonna determine what they do with Kirk Cousins.
I still think kirk Cousins is their preferred quarterback.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Sure, and you know Jaren Hall was heard on a
scramble running to the end zone against the Falcons as
soon he was knocked out on and maybe that provides
them a little bit more because you don't have that
security blanket and TJ. Howkinson that you need more from
the position. I mean, honestly, Josh Dobbs, what he did
with his legs, you know, it's why they won the
Falcons because you know of his mobility and what he

(14:12):
could do on the run. Nick Bollins doesn't necessarily provide
you to that extent, and Kirk Cousins never did. It
wasn't a part of his game. But maybe this gives
a little bit more, you know, opportunity for them to
have a different facet. But this can set up I
think a launching point, yeah, for the for the new
Minnesota Vikings, the new Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
And it is a big game. It's a huge game.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, I just I think the Packers is a big deal.
And now you're tired with the Packers and you're both
fighting for the playoffs and now it's in prime time. Yeah,
it's an absolute huge game.

I'm sure I'm trying to tell you about discover. These

(15:16):
are my confessions. Lorena Peterson is here, our technical producer,
Jason Stewart hanging out Isaac Low and Cron as well.
She's Monty Belaio. So I'm Dan Byer. We are in
for Doug Gottlieb. Bob Angelo, twenty one time Sports Emmy winner,
spent four decades with NFL films. As a book that
came out this summer, I must read, We'll get his

(15:37):
insight in a couple of minutes or so, just diving
into all things NFL. He's spoke with everyone, He's seen
pretty much everything in the National Football League. That will
be a fun conversation. What hasn't been fun for Pistons
fans is this losing streak Manci the Yes extended last
night in Boston twenty eight games. Is the Pistons fall

(15:58):
to the Celtics. They're now two and twenty nine on
the season, final score one twenty eight to one twenty
two in overtime, Yes, the Celtics. The NBA is darling
right now of the season needed overtime to meet the
Detroit Pistons. Two quick takeaways from last night. Number one,
the Pistons are musty TV, like you do not you

(16:20):
want to see this thing end?

Speaker 5 (16:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (16:22):
And number two, I do believe that every team that
plays them now is going to be so uptight because
they don't want to be the team. Yes, and I
think you saw that with the Boston Celtics.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Yeah, no, oh man, that that was rough. They were
up by what like twenty in the first half also,
and then to go to overtime and just kind of
like let it slip out of your hands. Rough. Rough
for the Pistons. I would not like to be in
their shoes. I'm sure nobody does. But you know, at

(16:53):
this point, the streak's gonna end sometime, and when it
does end, that conversation is gonna shift to who did
they beat? So like the faster you beat them, the conversation.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Will shift up twenty one points, up twenty I near
the end of the first half, Boston scored late and
made it a nineteen point game at halftime. But yes,
you really.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
Thought for like a second they're like, oh, you're gonna
and it's gonna be against Boston, Like what a great one.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
And then not only was it a slow burn, they
immediately saw the lead evaporate after one quarter immediately.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Yes, fourth, and then you know, I'm sure it hurt
more to go to overtime and lose, like because you
probably felt it, you could taste it like it's gonna
be over and we're gonna be a good team. And
then to lose an overtime, I felt like that was
worse almost than just losing in regulation.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
You're gonna be watching every time the Pistons take the court,
like that should be the game on NBA TV every
day whenever. Whenever they play, they end up playing the
Raptors tomorrow, doing it in the afternoon at home, So
perfect opportunity. There's no NFL to distract it. You can
take in Pistons Raptors.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Yeah, they have to know that all eyes are on you.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Know what I'm saying. It it ends tomorrow. She's Manzie. I
believe he is a twenty one time Sports Emmy winner,
spend over four decades with NFL films, and now we
can call him author. Yes, author of the NFL Off
Camera and eight is the guide to the league's most
memorable players and personalities. Bob Angelo joins the program. Hey Bob,
Happy New year's Thanks so much for coming on.

Speaker 6 (18:21):
Right back at you and thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
All right, so we know we're winding down in the
NFL season. Book came out in the summer. What has
been the response over these first four or five months
from your life's work Beyond the Camera four NFL films.

Speaker 6 (18:35):
Well, I'm brand new at all this, so let me
just explain it this way. I haven't received a penny
yet for my work, but I was that's part of
the contract. This won't happen until after January first. And
when I call to inquire with publisher how many books
are selling, all they tell me is Amazon has sold
out three times. But when I want to ask for
a more specific number so I could do some financial

(18:57):
planning for twenty twenty four, they don't have a You know,
it's exasperating. I mean, this whole promotion and publicity thing
I thought would be the easy part, and it's frustrating.
So you know, who knows. I'm enjoying being on the
phone with folks like you, doing shows, doing podcasts, signing books.

(19:18):
I mean, that's flattering. Someone asks me to put my
name on a book that I wrote, Holy Toledo, You know,
at age seventy. That's quite a surprise here in my
eight decade of life. But it's it's nice. It's and
people who read the books say, these are great stories,
we like these and its it's designed for people with
the short attention span. Longest story is twelve hundred words,

(19:40):
eighth grade education. You can read it in three minutes
to five minutes. I mean, it's it's for football fans,
who are you know who invest three to three and
a half hours watching their teams and don't have that
kind of time for a long narrative.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
Well, you've sold me on it. So many different games
I'm sure you remember, But is there one that stands
out the most?

Speaker 6 (20:02):
I have to say Super Bowl thirteen because I grew
up in Pittsburgh and back in the nineteen sixties, the
Pittsburgh Steelers, if you'll recall, stunk. They were bad. They
couldn't win games. Only had one winning season that I remember,
in nineteen sixty three, back when I was ten years old.
But when it changed, when Chuck nol came in, it

(20:22):
changed suddenly and decisively. I started shooting in nineteen seventy seven.
In seventy eight, Steelers played in Super Bowl thirteen against
Dallas and it was labeled the Battle Champions because each
team had won two Super Bowls prior to that event,
and being there when the Steelers won that thing on
that touchdown fast to Lynn Swan, Oh yeah, I still

(20:44):
get chills thinking about that since then, I mean quite
a few others. I mean, I've spent most of my
adult life in the Philadelphia area, and my final game
shooting out of about eight hundred and fifty or eight
hundred and sixty of them, the Super Bowl fifty two
were the Eagles upset at the New England Patriots. And
I'm going to say the word upset because if you

(21:04):
would have told me before the game Tom Brady is
going to throw for five hundred and two yards today
and the Eagles are going to win, I would have said,
you need to have yourself examined soon, because that just
ain't going to happen, No way, no how.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Now, now you mentioned Super Bowl thirteen, Bob Angelo joining
us here four decades with NFL films here on Fox
Sports Radio. The Jackie Smith drop touched down? Is that
your camera shot in the back of the end zone
and if it's not, like, do you take pride in
like someone else from NFL films being there getting that
what are those sort of emotions like it was.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Someone else's shot. I got quite a few shots that
day that have shown up in films and productions after
the fact, but that one I happened to be watching
because I was transitioning from one location to the other
trying to get to where I needed to be for
a reaction shot. I felt sick for Jackie Smith. I
didn't want the Steelers to win the game that way.

(22:00):
And after that event, I interviewed Jackie on several occasions,
one time with IRV Cross from CBS, and I said, IRV,
we really have to get to the bottom of this,
and IRV just kept asking about it, asking about it,
until finally Jackie said, come on, no more, no more, IRV.
You know how that felt, you know, please, I don't

(22:21):
want to talk. But I felt sick for the man
because he was a Hall of Famer and became a
Hall of Famer eventually. Oh what a horrible moment. On
the positive side, I do recall when I think it
was Hollywood Henderson took a poker kind of shoved Terry
Bradshaw after a play and Franco Harris took exception. On

(22:41):
the very next play, Harris just steamrolled through the middle
of the Cowboys defense for a walk in touchdown unmolested.
And wow, you talk about the immediate immediate revenge. Oh boy,
that was a beautiful thing.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
Bob Angela joined us here on Fox Sports Radio. At
the news desk is Isaac Lohenkron. Isaac one of the
most polished professionals in the world, Bob, and he is
specifically asked to be in on this interview because he
has a question for you.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
And this is the only time I've ever done this
with any of the guests.

Speaker 8 (23:14):
Bob.

Speaker 7 (23:15):
I hate to say this, I'm going to make this
a three part question. First part, how do you and
your colleagues manage to zoom in and perfectly capture close
ups of a spiraling football soaring through the air and
down to the ground full speed You captured perfectly in frame.
Second part described the brilliance of Steve Sable, who I

(23:37):
think is a creative genius. And the third part, what
was it like working with John Fasenda, the original voice
of NFL films.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
Well, the first answer is real simple. Donald Marx, colleague
of mine, at NFL Films his father was in the business.
He started shooting professionally at age eighteen. He perfected that
move where he literally would zoom in on the ball
in flight so that you could read the commissioner's signature,
and then pulled back to reveal the hands and or

(24:08):
the person owning those hands catching the football. So that
one was simple. Donnie Marks often imitated, never duplicated. No
one's ever quite mastered that technique the way Donnie could
do it. Steve Sable was a genius. Steve understood drama,
he understood filmmaking. He understood that NFL Films in its

(24:30):
infancy was not doing what they could do with the medium,
and he turned it all around. He brought John Fescenda in,
and I'm going to talk about John's even the same
answer here because John was a very interesting guy. He
was a South Philadelphia Italian who anchored the CBS newscasts

(24:55):
in Philadelphia for decades. I don't know if he knew
if a football pumped or stuffed, but he had this
stage British accent baritone. And when Steve first made the
decision to marry John, for Senda's voice to a dramatic
interpretation of pro football events with Sam Spence's music. Those

(25:18):
three things, that and the slow motion cinematography. All of
a sudden, he had an art form and it was magical.
I grew up watching that stuff. And when I was
in college at Penn State and then later at Northwestern,
I said, what do I know about? Well, I majored
in philosophy as an undergrad. Aren't too many ads and
papers for existential philosophy majors? Well, I know a lot

(25:42):
about pro football. Someone's writing these things. I played quarterback
in high school. I know how this sport is what
transpires on a football field on a Sunday afternoon. I
wrote my first letter to Steve in the spring of
nineteen seventy four. By the time I finished grad school
had an opening for me. And one day I actually

(26:03):
got to walk into this that recording studio and see
John Facenda sitting back there in the isolation booth behind
the glass. And I still remember that to this day.
I walked in there and said, Bobby, my name's John.
John could make a shopping list. Interesting. Last thing about
the doc, I mean John had that voice, I mean

(26:23):
you know, and he would brook the Russells, sprouts, pepermint, patty.
He just had that delivery that made everything far more
important than it really was. And no one liked him.
No one liked him.

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Bob, It's amazing. Bob Angela joining us here on Fox
Sports Radio, author of the book and NFL The NFL
off camera and eight as he got to the league's
most memorable players and personalities. We shared hallways and studios
literally ten feet from me where Casey Caseum would do
his countdown. You know, so I understand a little bit

(26:57):
of what you're talking about. When you're talking about legendary
and then seeing them do their craft, it's amazing. Or
seeing Casey Kaseum, the late great Casey Caseum making coffee
in our kitchen. It's crazy. It's it, truly is. But
I understand what you're talking about. I do want to
wrap up with this Manzi asked you about, you know,
game wise, personality wise. I mean, because you spoke with everyone,

(27:18):
he spoke with everyone over different eras, have personalities changed
and what personality you know, what person stands out to
you the most in your career and that we get
to read about in this book.

Speaker 6 (27:31):
Wow, that's a hard one. If I had to pick
out one guy, I would say Ray Nichke. Ray was
my high school hero. He was Vince Lombardi's middle linebacker
the nineteen sixties Packers. He started with the Packers back
in the late fifties when the Green Bay Packers like
the Pittsburgh Steelers. With me growing up stunk, I had

(27:54):
a poster Raynichkey above my bed when I was in
high school. I wanted to be him, but I was
too small, so I became a quarterback instead of at linebacker.
I got to work with Ray twice in my lifetime.
The first time I was with her Cross and IRB
and Ray. After the interview was done and we'd accomplished

(28:16):
everything that we set out to do, Ray put IRV
in a headlock. And Ray was a big, strong guy,
and IRV was in a head blog and he needed
help and he was literally asking for help. Meanwhile, furniture
is starting to get moved around and there's something around
on the floor and I'm thinking, oh my god, what
do I do? This is Ray Nitschke. That was the

(28:38):
first time the piece turned out well. CBS likes that
I used the John the filmmaker, the guy who does
I used the John Williams Superman score for that segment.
The second piece that I did with him, I was
on my way to his home and he happened to

(28:59):
get on the same flight as me. And this was
much later in his life and in mind, and he
asked me about you know, do you have any children. Now,
I remembered Ray growing up was orphans young. His older
brothers raised him, and he was a hell raiser. I
know that he adopted three men. He had three young
men in his life. He adopted all of these guys

(29:19):
and raised them. When I told him that my first
marriage was what had ended and my son was living
with his mother, he grew concerned. On the airplane, he
literally was concerned about that. I fell asleep. He wrote
this wonderful message personalized to my son Daniel, and I

(29:40):
gave it to him after the fact. If I could
give me a minute, I can find it here and
read it to you. I mean, it's in the book.
But the penmanship he had calligraphy. I'm thinking, here's a
high school dropout, not quite a dropout, but you know,
somebody really grew up hard scrabble and it was like
Colligor And it said to Danny Angelo a real star.

(30:04):
Good luck, always study hard, play hard, and never never
give up. Love you God, bless Dad's friends from Green Bay,
Ray Nichie.

Speaker 2 (30:12):
Wow, that's that's while I was sleeping.

Speaker 6 (30:15):
While I was when I woke up and handed it
to me, and I felt like hugging the man. How
is it freak? He put me in a in a
headlock and you start tossing me around first class So
I didn't. But amazing.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Oh, that that's great. Much more stories like this. I
don't know if they'll get better than that, because that's
a tough one to top, Bob, But I know they
can find your book at Amazon if it's not sold out.
We appreciate the time, best of luck, and hope all
that crap gets sorted out in twenty twenty four. Love
to have you on again, Bob, Thanks so.

Speaker 6 (30:44):
Much, Thank you very much for having me.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Bob Angelo, author of the book The NFL Off Camera
and eight, is the guide to the league's most memorable
players and personalities. He's a personality in himself. Yeah, yeah,
it happens, you know when you're when you're behind the camera, right, No, that's.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
The best you get the closest, most real, you know, uh,
reactions of people like not not from the TV, but
just being there on the side. That must be awesome.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
So I'm Dan Byer coming up next live for the
tirerec dot Com Studios on The Doug Gottlieb Show. We'll
give you an update on our sports Person of the
Year voting. Plus it's time to break out the Kenny
Rodgers and the Gambler that's next year on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
Larry takes a shotgun, snap back the path, rolls a
little bit right.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
Side, throws down the middle.

Speaker 6 (31:43):
It's picked off and then going to the crown.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
It's gonna be Chelton Lewis what Clemson? Ah? There was
our Progressive player of the Day, Clemson Radio Network as
the Tigers win the Gator Bowl over the Kentucky while
gets turnover at the end seal the deal. Phil Moffis three.
Our touchdown run gave Clemson the lead light and then

(32:06):
the Tigers sealed the deal. There In our Progressive Insurance

or one eight hundred Progressive. She's Monte Milanos. I'm Dan
Bayer sitting in for Doug Gottlieb here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. We're gonna stick around for another two hours

(32:28):
as we are in for Cavino and rich Miranda Peterson
is here, Jason Stewart is here, and Isaac Lowincron is here.
Just's gonna hang out with the Gambler. Everybody's gonna make
their picks. But Isaac, we've got some not breaking news,
but news just in from the Mile High City.

Speaker 7 (32:41):
Yeah, this is moments ago in the Denver Broncos locker room,
Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson went on the record with his assertion.
His assertion that after their win over Kansas City back
in week eight, during their bye week in week nine,
the Broncos indeed came to him and said, if you
do not wait your thirty seven million dollar injury guarantee,

(33:02):
we will bench you for the rest of the season.
So here is Russell Wilson in the Broncos locker room
on the record for the first time since being benched
just a short time ago.

Speaker 9 (33:10):
We be the Chiefs day.

Speaker 10 (33:11):
They came up to me during the They came up
to me during the bye week and began the bye
week Monday or Chees Day, and they told me that
if I didn't change my contract, my injury guarantee.

Speaker 9 (33:22):
That i'd be, uh, you know, that I'd be bench
for the rest of the year. And so I don't
know how that we had nine games left or show.
I was definitely disappointed about it. And it was the
process throughout the whole week, the pro bye week, and
you know, it was it was, uh, you know, we
just came up beating the Chiefs, played a pretty big
game as the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (33:41):
We just came up for that.

Speaker 9 (33:42):
So I was excited obviously for us fighting for the
playoffs and get on a hot streak and you know,
and then in the NFLPA and the NFL got involved
or whatever I think.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
But at some.

Speaker 7 (33:51):
Point and that audio courtesy of Zach Stevens of the
Denver dot Com.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
All right, so we're gonna we're gonna talk more about
that coming up in about ten minutes or so, so
if you can stick around, because Sean Payton also spoke today.
There's more on that. This is a story that is
just not going away in the NFL, even though Russell
Wilson is going away from the starting lineup because he
will not start against the Chargers in week seventeen. All right,
let's try to strike up some Kenny, because it's that time.

(34:19):
We have the final Doug Gottlieb Show of twenty twenty three.
Very fittingly, there's college football to talk about. There's NBA
College hoops, NHL, and of course the National Football League.
We will all be making our picks, at least one
pick entering into the weekend. Then we'll sing our hearts
out as we say so long to twenty twenty three.

(34:40):
I think it's only fitting that we start picks wise
with our executive producer, Jason Stewart.

Speaker 8 (34:47):
Thank you, Dan, Thank you Monci. All right, you got
to rush to the butt window here. My Jay's stew
team parlay for the weekend is the Cotton Bowl tonight
and the Peach Bowl early in the morning, Lilly, the
Pitch Bowl in the morning. All right, So at the
Cotton Bowl tonight as Missouri facing off against Ohio State.

(35:07):
Not sure if Dan has that on the schedule to watch.
I like Missouri getting the points here, and just a
memo for Ohio State fans, Archie Griffith is not watching
through that door, Archie Griffith, Dan No, But that's all right, Griffin.

(35:28):
That's that's exactly what I met. That's exactly what I meant,
Archie Griffith. I'm gonna go to Griffin Park in LA
this weekend. Griffin Park and then Old Miss getting the
points tomorrow. So Missouri to Old Miss and the Jay's
two team parway thank me on Monday. In twenty twenty four,
mister sec that's what we could call him. In twenty
twenty four, manze Blanias, do you have a pick?

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Sure and listen. I'm not telling you to do this,
just like Rob Parker says, I'm not telling you to
make this bet. I'll just tell you what I would
bet on the easy bet this week.

Speaker 2 (35:56):
For me, I don't.

Speaker 3 (35:57):
See how you don't take the Eagles twelve points favorite
over the Cardinals.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
The Eagles need to win, and they need to win in.

Speaker 3 (36:05):
Style, so they're gonna they're gonna do it. They're gonna
win by more than twelve.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
Did you do this just so you could say Cardinals
for one time before twenty twenty three?

Speaker 4 (36:13):
What about how are you supposed to say?

Speaker 7 (36:15):
And how do I say it?

Speaker 2 (36:15):
I don't hear it. You say Cardinals, Cardinals, I say Cardinals.
Jason probably says Cardinals. Isaac Laurencron Cardinals or are you
a Are you a Cardinals or a Cardinals guy? Cardinals
or Cardinals?

Speaker 7 (36:31):
I go with Cardinals because I'm not British. At the
BBC they always refer him as the Saint Louis Cardinals Cardinals.

Speaker 2 (36:40):
See, uh, all right? Do you have a pick or not?

Speaker 3 (36:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (36:43):
Do you have a pick?

Speaker 2 (36:43):
Isaac? Or you just want to say he doesn't even
have a speaker's out? Sorry, Lorena, Yeah, sorry, Isaac will
ask you eight questions?

Speaker 5 (36:50):
Make sure Mark, Isaac, it's fine. You know I'm always
on for the Cowboys. They're playing the Lions and they're
giving five and a half this weekend. You like the Cowboys, listen,
and it's not because of any other reason. Besides, I
cannot fall off if I just stop supporting him at
the end.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
What kind of fan am I? That's true? Any Cowboys?
We never know specifically which cowboys been? Any Cowboys? I
got the final pick I love the Colts big over
the Raiders. I just think that the Raiders short week
off after that emotional win against the Chiefs. Remember they
didn't complete a pass for the final three quarters, by
the way, that's not good. Yeah, the Colts have a

(37:25):
lot to play for. I like the Colts. All right, everybody,
let's sing together for the last time in twenty twenty three.
This is the start of the song. What's going on?

Speaker 6 (37:33):
Yes?

Speaker 9 (37:34):
Out of this?

Speaker 2 (37:35):
You got to know all right, Oh, this is the
start of the song. Is you got to know when
to hold, when to hold them, when the food, when
walk away? No, when to run? Mantie and I aren't
going anywhere. You may want to leave
