(00:44):
the way that tire buying should be. It feels like
everybody got fired, right except for the players in Green Bay.
As you know we yesterday was the news that or
two days ago was the news that the Jets had
fired Robert Sala. Today was the news that they replaced
(01:08):
Nathaniel Hackett's play caller and head coach and play caller,
and of course this all on the back of the
story that Robert Sala wanted to fire Nathaniel Hackett or
actually demote Nathaniel Hackett before he was fired. And then
Aaron Rodgers yesterday like, hey, I got nothing to do
with it. My name is Bennett, and I ain't in it.
(01:29):
And look, I just I'm gonna be completely honest, you know,
as I try to be every day with you here
on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Zach Rosenblat's going to join
us in a moment he covers the Jets for the
Athletic It just it's like, Okay, hold on a second.
They hired Nathaniel Hackett because that's what you wanted. They
(01:49):
go after wide receivers because that's who you wanted. There
was talk of trying to get David Baktiari there because
that's who you wanted, right. Even DeVante Adams go okay,
and Aaron Rodgers there's big frustration with Packers management. Wasn't
over over their moves, but over hey, you didn't consult me,
so you want to be consulta while his moves. Yesterday,
(02:10):
Aaron Rodgers goes on with Pat McAfee and says that
Woody Johnson, the owner of the team, called him before
he fired Robert Sala, but failed to mention they were
going to fire the head coach. News to me, I
was in the training room. I had no idea. Seems
more than hard to believe, right, I almost like if
(02:34):
Aaron Rodgers was who I think Jason Stewart likes, likings
him to be this kind of Hey, this is what
I think. This is the true I'll do. I'm just
gonna say what I think with the truth, and it
will set me free. Why do he just own it? Yeah,
Robert Sala is not good enough, so we move on.
He's a good dude, he's a good coach, but we
want to win championships and we just wasn't championship level coaching?
(02:57):
Be hard to argue with that. Zach Rosenblat covers the
Jets for the Athletic He joined us in the Doug
Gottlig Show on Fox Sports Radio. Do you believe that
Aaron Rodgers wasn't told, didn't know, had nothing to do
with with Robert Sala being fired?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:15):
You know, I it is a fair question. You know
the fact that they talked the night before whatdy Johnson
made this decision. And I think the only two people
who know whether what he told him he was thinking
about doing this, as the two people now were on
that phone call. But I do not think that Aaron
had a hand in firing Robert Sala, unless you consider
him playing poorly him having a hand in it. Like
I genuinely don't think this is something that he would
(03:37):
have wanted to do. I mean, if you think about it,
like you know, for all Aaron's faults, he is he
is very smart, and I think he knows that Robert
Sala being fired after five weeks and all the stories
about have to get himtomoted? What you out, I'm getting demoted? Anyway,
that would have come out and everybody would have assumed
that it was Rogers that did it. And Rogers does
not want everybody thinking that he did all this stuff.
So I don't think that he was the one that
(03:59):
said would he fire him? Or you know whatever what
he said, should I fire him? And Roger city, Yes,
I don't think any of those things necessarily happened. But
you know, I nobody knows what happened in that conversation.
It's entirely possible, and I think logical that Wood he
would have brought it up.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Okay, so why fire Salah if he's a defensive guy
and the defense was performing well statistically?
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah, you know, I you know, he doesn't. He doesn't
call plays on the defense necessarily. I mean, obviously it's
his scheme and all that stuff. So he deserves a
lot of credit for where it got to. But I
think ultimately, what he you know, he said this in
his conference call on Tuesday, He've used this as the
most talented team the Jets have had in his twenty
five years as the owner, and he felt like he
wanted to do it now before it was too late.
I think the argument can be made if if you
(04:44):
were so willing to pull the leash after five games,
and why didn't you just fire him in the off season.
But you know, I think ultimately he saw where things
were trending and he decided to make a change to
try and spurse some action into a team that you
know should be competitive, instead of waiting until it was
too late. Putting a guy at the top everybody respects
in this locker room who has really high energy as
a former player, everybody's going to listen to him. But
(05:05):
I think he just saw this as an opportunity to
try something different because what was happening before, Like they
were making the same mistakes weeks after week, and you know,
the whole cliche about insanity is doing the same things
over and over again and accepting different results. So I
think ultimately that's where.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
His head was.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
That So what is missing with this team? Let's let's
start with Aaron Rodgers, right, Like, look, he obviously when
you have Achilles surgery, you're not going to be the same,
and especially Rogers because it wasn't like he was a blurb,
but he was so athletic in the pocket and he
doesn't move the same. He took away some of the superpower.
(05:40):
But he's also crazy accurate, and he was really inaccurate
at times when they played in London. What oh, we
just lost the mom Sorry, we'll get We'll get Zach back.
In a second Stug Gottlieb show Here on Fox Sports Radio,
Zach Rosenblatt is our guest. He covers the Jets for
the athletic We're talking about not just the fire ring
Robert Solid, but what's gone so wrong with this team,
(06:03):
specifically with Aaron Rodgers and the offense, and of course
eventually we'll get around to be the possibility DeVante Adams Zach,
Why why do you think Aaron was so inaccurate at
times against the Vikes.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, you know, it's a great question. You know, it
was one of his worst games he's maybe ever had
at the starting quarterback. Those two interceptions were entirely on him.
He looked old, he looked like he was a little
heasonant to throw down. Said he was banged up from
the week before. He got beat up pretty good. I
think he was hit something like eleven times against the Broncos,
and he was going to hit a lot against the Vikings,
their team that he knew was gonna blitz him, and
(06:39):
I don't think he handled it particularly well. And it
was pretty concerning performance. And you know, I think there's
something you said about how the offensive line has regressed
after they played really, really well for three weeks. Rob
blocking has been a disaster, so nobody's scared of the
run past blocking. He's gotten hit twenty five times in the
last two weeks. I think, sacks something like eight times,
and that's just not going to cut it when you
have a forty old quarterback, and now you know he's
(07:00):
a low ankle sprain and he's already you know, his
movement was looking a little better than I expected, but
I can't imagine it's going to be looking as good
now that he's a little banged up. So you know,
it's the biggest question not going forward, is he's going
to get the Aaron the version of Aaron Rodgers that
you thought And if you don't, can the Jets overcome that?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Can you? Can they?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
I don't. I mean, based on what we saw the
last two weeks, I don't think. So, you know, it
looked a lot like the Jets did the last couple
of years. You know, the difference I think now is
in the thing will hack this offense as it was
being called in has Aaron and him we're calling it
was very bland and predictable, And it was the same
exact offense there running last year that was bland and predictable.
And you're hoping that bringing Todd Downing in they could
get a little more creative, doing more play action, do
(07:40):
a little more pre snap motion things that they would
just have not been doing the last couple of weeks.
And and scheming, Garrett Wilson open and doing the things
that good offensive coordinators do. And we'll see if Todd
Downing has what it takes to kind of get this
offense to be nice.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
I guess, I guess. Here's my question. Okay, the Nathaniel
Hackett lack of motion stuff, Like you go back to
the Green Bay days, this was a problem, right then
you go to he couldn't get the plays in. Then
he wasn't getting the plays in here with the Jets
and they didn't they had a lack of motion. Like again,
I liked it. Aaron Rodgers on some level was loyal,
but his evaluation of a guy he wants like I don't,
(08:15):
I don't get it, I don't. I helped me understand.
Was it just friendship and familiarity. Why would he want that,
especially when it clearly wasn't working.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, you know, I think a big part of it
is Aaron wants a lot of control of the line
of scrimmage, the amount of control that a guy like
Peyton Manning used to get. And I think that when
you know, when he was in Green Bay with Matt
mfloora Matt Lafour had his system and he did a
lot of emotional with Aaron didn't love and and you know,
I think they butted head a lot. But you know,
Aaron Rodgers are two of the best seasons of his
career when he had Matt Lafloor calling to play. So
(08:48):
you know, I think it's it's a blind spot in
Aaron Rodgers is you know, his late the later a
lot of half of his career that he's demanded, you know,
to be with the fan hacket and clearly backfired, especially
last year when the hacker was just not prepared to
recover when Aaron went down. So you know, I'm very
curious to see how this downing and Roger's relationship goes
a big thing about hacking Rogers, you know, I think
(09:09):
Mike Gerrit Folo of Menson Network reported this a couple
of weeks ago. You know, the process they did with
play calling was hack. It would give Rogers three different
plays the truth from and then they would pick one
and then they go And I think that's that is
normal for guys of that stature, that experience, that you
know caliber, but you know, clearly that wasn't working. And
It'll be interesting to see if what it looks.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Like with Hot Downing doing it Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. What's it like with Aaron Rodgers? Well,
we'll get to that in a second. DeVante Adams, where
are they there?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
I still think they're very much in it. I think
it just comes down to the price. You know, the
Raiders have been pretty adamant that they want a second
round pick, and they want the team of firing him
to pay the entire salary. And if that's the case,
the Jets are not going to do that. The Jets
are going to want them to eat a decent amount
of the salary. I would say, I don't think way
he's dying to spend a lot of money, and I
don't think they're going to give up a Secon round pick.
So if the price comes down, I still think the
Jets are in the driver's seat. If somebody's willing to
(10:01):
meet what the Raiders are asking for, they'll jump ahead
of the Jets. But I still think it's very possible.
It's not likely that Devonte winds up being a Jet
at some point.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
What's it like with Aaron Rodgers? Is a Jet next year?
Speaker 3 (10:16):
What does it look like in terms of them being
a Jet next year. Yeah, Yeah, I mean I think
it's all dependent on how the rest of the season goes.
I mean, he is starting to look old, so I
don't know retirements on the table or not. Yeah. I
think if they missed the playoffs, then I think there's
gonna be a lot of you know, schools getting cracked,
so to speak. So it's hard to say without seeing
how the rest of the season plays out. But if
it plays out like it looks so far, I don't
(10:36):
think he's here next year.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Zach, great stuff man, Always enjoyable and interesting to cover
the Jets. I'm sure they never a dull moment. We
appreciate you being our guests.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Thanks Doug.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Zach Rosenblad joined us of course, senior writer for The
Athletic covering the New York Jets who don't play or
practice actually in New York.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
What Up Doug aleg Show Fox Sports Radio. You know,
it's it's really really interesting that you know Aaron Rodgers.
Obviously today they they demoted Nathaniel Hackett from play caller
to uh, I guess just check collector quasi quarterback coach
(11:33):
Aaron Rodgers buddy in the in the film room with
the Jets. But it is interesting, like we do this
all the time where we talked about player empowerment and
I mean, how many of these great players don't know
anything about personnel decisions. Remember Aaron Rodgers when he left
(11:54):
the Packers, he talked about all of the different guys
that he was, you know, upset that the Packers let
go and all of them, like if you go back
and look at them, like, none of them were guys
that made sense for them to keep, you know, none
of them. None. And you know, Alan Lazard's a nice player,
(12:17):
but I mean they he's not a number two. I
mean of the guys they brought back out of familiarity,
none of them are good enough or difference makers offensively.
And then you know he ties his ship to Nathaniel Hackett,
who's not a good play caller. Remember he's in Denver,
(12:37):
he can't get the plays in on time. He's in
New York this last week they're in London. He couldn't
get the plays in on time. And the lack of motion.
Like again, remember go back to the Mike McCarthy era
when it came to the end. This is the same offense,
and the whole argument with it against it was it
was way too basic, way too lame, way too dated
(13:00):
enough pre snap note motion, right, And remember Matt Lafleur
came in and he's like, look the whole like quarterback
like basically kind of a Brett Favre. I want it
super basic and then I got the superpowers. I'll figure
it out. Like that doesn't work anymore. It just doesn't.
(13:20):
The defenses are too advanced, too advanced. So I just
it's really interesting on how many people in our positions
in the media say, yeah, you got a player empower, Yeah,
you should bring him in on these decisions. Why that's
not what he does. Yeah, I mean every once in
(13:43):
a while you go like, hey, man, you've been working
this guy. What do you think. That's one thing, But
like going and acquiring players because you like him, because
he's your guy, because you work out with like, that
doesn't work. Player personnel people, that's all they do. They
get up in the morning and they much film, They
talk to people, and they do research. They try and
find with fiscal and again it doesn't mean that there's
(14:04):
one hundred percent hit rate, but that's their job. And
I think again the Nathaniel Hackett demotion and essentially disaster,
right is it okay? Well we okay call him disaster
and and look, Aaron is not without fault. Is that
without flaw? He's not as good a quarterback as he
was in Green Bay because he's older, he's gone through
(14:25):
a I get this is a huge injury, some used
to be a career ending injury. But every time I
hear people basketball players and football players the most time
about player empowerment, bring them in in the decision making process.
I give you Aaron Rodgers because Aarongers is not an idiot.
(14:45):
He is a really really bright guy and right probably
too smart for his own good conspiracy theorist and you know,
I mean, I'm sure he's got all kinds of theories
on who really shot Kennedy and et cetera, et cetera,
But he's not an idiot. He's actually super suer smart
and he's a great, all time great quarterback. In his prime,
(15:06):
Aaron Rodgers literally checked every single box as a player.
Boxes that even Tom Brady. He was good in the clutch,
unbelievable arm strength, accuracy, athleticism, pre staff reads, being able
to improvise, and secondary terchary Reids like the whole thing,
(15:26):
had the whole package. But you know what he's not.
He's not a probably a personnel guy. He's just not.
And pretty obviously his loyalty to Nathaniel Hackett is at
least part and parcel to the disaster which is the
Jets offense. All right, let's get back to football. Eric
Mangini joins us. Of course, Eric is a longtime assistant
(15:50):
in the NFL, head coach of the Jets, head coach
of the Browns, and he joins us in the Doug
Gotlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Eric, I would
be indulgent, obviously, it's an experience that you know, you've
worked in that organization. I just what are your thoughts
on how it went down with Robert Sala being let go?
Speaker 5 (16:07):
Well, it doesn't totally surprise me. Wood he fired me
after going nine and seven, and I had you know,
Brett Farva and he had gotten hurt and then we
had a pretty good team. So him moving on in
this I thought the fact that he brought Robert back
this year was surprising, but for him to fire him
(16:28):
when he did, it's not really It's not really Woody's
at moll. He's never fired a head coach during the season. Really,
the Jets organization as a whole has never fired a
head coach during the season. I think one guy one
that coach left like in nineteen seventy six, So that's
out of the pattern. But the game was in the UK.
(16:48):
Wood he was the ambassador of the UK. I'm sure
he wanted you know, he had his friends there. He
wanted a good showing. This comes on the heels of
the really disappointing Denver Broccos loss, which throughout the course
of this season. When you consider what the expectations were
going into it versus where they are and the disappointing losses,
(17:11):
I think, I think what he just impulsively decided he
was going to dry some something different.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
What did Aaron Rodgers' role in this was?
Speaker 5 (17:22):
Well, Aaron didn't really hide the fact that he didn't
love Robert Salah at all. And there are multiple examples
of Aaron taking every opportunity to either embarrassed Robert or
contradict him, and and Aaron's constantly preaching about, you know,
(17:44):
the focuses needs to be on football and and you
know all the things that you'd want from your quarterback.
But yet he creates a lot of the distractions and
animosity in the way that he was responding. And and
maybe they didn't fit personnel wise, but uh, I'm sure
(18:06):
he didn't do much to say Robert in the end,
and the idea that he talked to Woody the night
before Robert was let go and it never came up.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
It never came Listen, listen, I mean, well, hold on,
here's the guy who wanted wanted player personnel decision making.
Here's the guy who said his big issue with Green
Bay was nobody told him anything when they're drafting Jordan
Love or what they were the cutting his friends or whatever,
so he wanted to be in the know. He talks
to the owner of the team the night before they
(18:38):
fired the head coach, and it didn't come up like.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
Hey, I'm just gonna dramatically change the organization tomorrow, which
is going to affect you and then everybody else that
you deal with on a daily basis. But I'm not
going to cover that in the call that we have.
I'm just checking in to see how you're doing really
really things. That seems pretty far fetched. And even when
(19:06):
he talked about it, he denied it like he was
like a politician was denying something, not really someone.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Who why not just why not just own it? Why
not just go like, listen, I've played for championship level teams,
i played for a lot of coaches. We just we this,
we're not there? Why I just own it? I mean,
especially for a guy that likes to say that he
tells the truth, that he's the honest broker, why not
just own it?
Speaker 5 (19:31):
Okay? But but you know, it's it's a little bit
of a may West rule. If you've got to tell
someone you're a lady, you're not. So I've always telling
everybody how you tell the truth? You know, that's that's
a that's a red flag right there. And then if
you're going to own anything, own your own performance, own
all the multiple interceptions, all the distractions you've created, all
(19:55):
the things that you could have done better throughout this process.
And look, it's it's easy to fire people. The firing
people are is simple. It's putting the pieces together after
you transition, but that's the hard part. And maybe this
will be a shot of adrenaline for the organization, and
(20:16):
then that happens at times, and they have the talent
to win the division. It's not like the Buffalo is
clearly running away with the division by any stretch. And
Miami's got their set of problems and New England's got
their set of problems. So it's all in front of them.
(20:37):
But you still got to find the answers. And one
of the biggest answers is he needs to play better.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
He does need to play better, and it's it's fascinating,
like the intercept, the overthrows and wide open guys, here's
the guy that pride himself on accuracy and not turning
the football over, and what do you do? He turned
the football over and has been inaccurate key moments. Eric
Manjeni is our guest. You can see him on Fox
Sports One. Of course. It's a two time head coach,
(21:05):
long time defense assistant, most notably with the Newtland Patriots,
joints and the Doug Outlet the show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Let me ask about the Patriots. They're gonna
hand the ball to May what do you think about
the timing.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
Well, he Greg has a real advantage over Tayleb Williams
and Jayden Daniels. He's had he's had five weeks to
sit and watch things and learn how to be a pro.
And ideally you'd like to have a young quarterback who
could sit on the bench and learn what it means
(21:41):
to play professional.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
Football and all.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
The aspects to it. And it's a huge transition for
a young player, a rookie player. It's an even bigger
transition for a quarterback. The value of information and you
have to know offensively, the adjustments that come to play,
the volumes of def fences that you're facing, duh, you
know week in and week out versus what you saw
(22:04):
in college, which is a lot a lot more paired down.
So this there's a ton but he has had that
time to watch and we're seeing two guys that are
you know, Caleb is coming on. I think he's getting
a little bit better each week and has shown some
flashes of being a really good player. And we know
(22:24):
what what Jaden's doing in Washington. So from a from
a fan based perspective, from an ownership perspective, you're looking
at it and saying, well, other quarterbacks have done well,
young quarterbacks who were drafted high. Why not why not
see whether our guy can change things. It makes It
(22:47):
makes a lot of sense. It's not perfect, but I
understand why they're doing them, making them move now.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Niners taking on the Seahawks tonight. Niners have been you know,
they lost three out of four here, so they've been
given a passbeak of injuries. Should they have been given
that pass?
Speaker 5 (23:04):
Yeah, I don't see them as getting a pass. I
really felt that Arizona was a game where they could
be upset. That was my pick last week on the
show for an upset alert, because when you look at
the Cardinals you know, it was easy to look past
them to the fact that they had the Seahawks on
Thursday night on a short week. Kyler Murray's playing the
(23:26):
best football that he's played since he's been in the league. Statistically,
they run the ball really well, and then San Francisco
gets into the game and there's a bunch of things
that happened. They lose their kicker. They're in the red
zone six times, you know, and most of the time
without their kicker, they fumble on the eight yard line,
there were a lot of things that when you're not
(23:51):
completely dialed in on the opponent, can happen in a
game that they should have easily won, and it didn't.
And I think they were looking past them to this
game tonight in terms of injuries. Yeah, so they don't
have Christian mccaff McCaffrey, but Jordan Mason's done a great job.
(24:12):
He's done a really good job, and they're running the
ball effectively. Brandon and Youth has been disappointing. He got
his money, but it's really taken him multiple games to
get to the production that we saw last week where
he finally would he have eate e catch his last game,
where he'd been kind of the indivisible man prior to that. Yeah,
(24:35):
so they're they're they've been dinged up, but they shouldn't
get a pass to that at all. They still have
a ton of stars and a ton of really good players,
and it's it's pretty disappointing to have the start that
they've had, and especially being going three. In the NFC.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports, Eric Mangini is
our guest course former head coach of the Jets, former
head coach of the Browns. I gotta ask you what
the Browns I mean, Okay, what do you do with
this Deshaun Watson albatross of a contract?
Speaker 5 (25:10):
Is this is this is a nightmare. I'm really happy
I'm not the head coach of the Brons with this
situation because there is no good answer. You can't move
on from him next year, even because I think it's
it's some ridiculous amount of money on next to's cap
(25:32):
followed up by another year of a ridiculous amount of
money on the sellar cap. And I understand why they
keep pushing money into the future and haven't been paid
to go because their assumption is as the salary cap grow.
So let's say it gets bigger by thirty million dollars
next year, the dead money won't be as bad whenever
they pull that trigger. We saw that Russell Wilson dead
(25:55):
money was what eighty five million dollars. That's at a
new bar. This would completely a dramatic new bar. But
at least the cat's growing. And now they're in a
situation where he's not playing well. They've got Jamis Winston
on the bench, who's an exciting player. Now he's going
to be exciting for you, and he's going to be
exciting for the other team too because you're going to
(26:17):
throw touchdowns and picks. But it gives them a chance
to do something. But right now, it's just it's just
like it's just lethargic, the whole the whole operation, the
level of enthusiasm. And I'm sure it's because everybody in
that building knows we can't do anything about this glaring
(26:39):
problem that we have.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
It's just, I mean, it's he's done more to hurt
NFL quarterbacks going forward than probably anybody. Right Like, he
finally broke through, got the fully guarantee five year deal,
and it's an abject disaster. I do want to ask you.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
About Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson helped that out with the
deal he got in Denver and his performance. So it
was like that year of contrast set the uh, you know,
it's set a great new bar for quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Yeah, but then they keep keep doing it. But but
they keep doing it like you give two of a
big deal, Like, well, have we give two of this
gigantic deal? Now he's he's out. Who knows if he's
gonna retire? What he's gonna do.
Speaker 5 (27:18):
I mean, yeah, you look at you looked at two
of the deal, Doug. He had he had an injury
that could be career ending, and to his credit, he
went through the whole year without being injured. But that
doesn't go away like that injury risk doesn't go away.
And they could have played him on the fifth year
option and then franchised them. But you give him a
(27:41):
new deal and I'm happy for to it. So it's
a great situation for the player, not great business for
the club.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
Okay, the Vikings undefeated, right, and you know you got
a i know for a Patriot who's a four backup
quarterback as their head coach. You know, uh, you know,
they got a general manager came from San Francisco, really
bright young guy, and they've kind of remade this roster.
But your impressions as a coach, what do you see
(28:10):
with the Vikings in terms of the longevity of this
early season success.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Well, remember when Philly last year was ten and one,
and then I think Pittsford the year before was somewhere
similar to that, and they had a lot of yeah success.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Kind of fraudulently. You're like, don't know, whattheless.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Yeah, look like.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
When game stocks came, well, when game stocks stock, game
stops stock went way high. You're like, yeah, I'm not
buying that. Is that what you are?
Speaker 5 (28:37):
Yeah, it's well, it's I'm happy for Sam Darnold, but traditionally,
over the course of his college and pro career, he's
thrown about as many interceptions as he's thrown touchdowns. And really,
when you look at his turnovers this season, I still
think he's I think it's about third in the league
and turnovers between bumble and pick. So that's not going
(29:02):
to go away, and that's going to be a problem.
Where they've been able to offset that problem is defensively.
They're generating a ton of turnovers and they do it
with us with either the second or third most pressure
in the league on first and second down. I imagine
that teams are going to catch up with the pressure
package and there are going to be some holes and
(29:24):
there are either going to be those games where Sam's
gonna gonna have to carry things, and there's gonna be
those games where his turnovers are are a lot greater
than what the defense can generate. You know, traditionally turnovers
come in bunches, but it's hard to count on those
(29:44):
game in and game out. You know, you know, if
you're good on third down, you're usually good on third
down turnovers. It's not as consistent a statistic that you
can count on through the course of the season, although
with Sam's turnovers, historically those have remained pretty constant. So
I don't I don't know if I'm as excited as
(30:06):
everybody else is about Minnesota. I think it's great. I
didn't see it coming, but it's a long season and
I don't know if it's sustainable.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Eric.
Speaker 1 (30:17):

DOUG just an update on what is happening in Florida.
The Tampa Bay Rays today issued a statement after the
roof of Tropicana Field was torn off last night by
Hurricane Milton. The Rays say, quote, we are fortunate and
grateful no one was hurt by the damage to our
ballpark last night. Over the coming days and weeks, we
expect to be able to assess the true condition of
Tropicana Field. In the meantime, they are working with law
(31:31):
enforcement to secure the building end quote. The Buccaneers said
that their damage to Raymond James Stadium and practice facility
were just merely cosmetic. But that's the latest from the
to Tampa sports teams that were hit by Hurricane Milton
last night.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
And I understand that Tampa hasn't been hit direct hit
in what like one hundred and three years or something
is just like really crazy, how fortunate that city has been.
And I guess it was ten miles to the south,
it was ten miles north. In terms of the direct hit,
there would have been a orm surge and it would
have been really bad for Tampa. But I just it
is amazing that the cloth roof lasted this long. Sure, right,
(32:10):
just like anybody wanted like the claw roof thing, like
we sure that's a good idea. Yeah whatever, I mean,
how often do we all the time?
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Anyway, go ahead, Well, they are going to be getting
a new stadium in the in the future, so they
are staying in the Tampa area and it'll be I
believe in open air stadium. So the roof now it is,
but yeah, now it is finally got the stadium some
made up.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
Will they fix the roof in time for next year.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
That's part of the question. Not sure what they're going
to be able to do. I'll tell you maybe. The
one advantage is there are a ton of minor league ballparks,
you know, around that area if you needed to hold games.
But I'm not sure what their backup plans would be.
But the visual images were pretty pretty when you see
(33:01):
it looked like the Silver Dome. Remember when the Silver
Dome was just left to rot. That's what Trump Canafield
looked like today with all the sheets of the roof
just on the field.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Yes, well listen, I mean, as much as we talk
about sports, obviously Saint Petersburg has been hit pretty hard
and we're trying to be as as topful as possible.
But again, like that from a sports show and just
a fear the shaer visuals of it. That was crazy.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
So on the news, Bears chairman George McCaskey did confirm
that the team made a push for Tom Brady when
he was a free agent in twenty twenty. It really
wasn't known that the Bears went after it, unjol. Brady
made the revelation during a broadcast during a game that
he did on Fox between the Eagles and Buccaneers.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Yeah. I mean, look, lots of teams, lots of teams
went after him. But I thought tom Brady bringing his
pros and cons list, I thought that was good TV.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
I gonna lie to you, well, it also a bit
flies in the face of teams weren't interested because remember
Brady saying they're going to go with that bleeping guy
instead of me.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
In the end, we kind of thought it was only
just down to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but apparently the
Bears did have an interest, and whether they backed off
or not, they at least were interested in the Brady sweepstakes.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
I I love.
Speaker 4 (34:23):
That Mitch Trubisky is getting strays in this.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
He's just trying to be a backup quarterback somewhere.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
You guys probably know where. Buffalo. Oh great, thanks, Yes
he's back in Buffalo. What a weekend for college football, right,
Ohio State Oregon headlining things ole Miss LSU. You got
Texas and Oklahoma, a lot of great games at I'm
probably leaving some out, but.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
So I just questioned, Dan, you and I are huge
college fall fans. Does it take away from Ohio State
Oregon that both these teams are going to be in
the playoff?
Speaker 4 (34:58):
Yes, yes, it does, completely does. Which is going to
be my point was bet Online ended up having the
percentages for the top college football teams this season to
make the twelve team playoff, and right now, no one
has a better chance than Ohio State. Right now, there's
a ninety five point two percent chance according to bet
(35:21):
online that the Buckeyes make the twelve team field. Oregon
currently listed as an eighty eight point nine percent chance
of making the field. As for Alabama, remember they were
number one, but then we're upset at Vanderbilt. A little
bit of what I talked about earlier this week and
watching that game and also the widespread ramifications, Alabama is
still an eighty three point three percent chance that they
(35:44):
make the twelve team playoff despite that loss at Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
Yeah, I just it's one of those things where I understand.
I think I tweeted this like Saturday night. I completely
understand because I'm I gotta tell you I want for
a long time want to playoff as well. But with anything,
there's give and take, and what you get back is
that now you lose two games in the Big Ten
(36:13):
or the SEC, you're still going to get in, you know,
especially if you're one of the brand name teams. That's
just the reality to it, and so these regular season
games just don't mean as much. They don't.
Speaker 4 (36:24):
We touched on Raphael and a Dolls retirement earlier today
going to be at the end of the year. Danny
Green announced he's retiring from the NBA after fifteen seasons
and three NBA titles in that career.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
My question, though, is Danny Green was on TV last year.
I thought he had already retired. This just makes it official.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
This makes it official he is done. Good run though, No.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
It's a really good run from a guy who wasn't like,
wasn't a big name recruit. Goes to North Carolina, more
known at Carolina. I think he came out the bench.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Ag Yeah right, yep.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Wonder if dancing and warm ups than anything else. So
good run. Heanks The Doug Gatlan Show. Download the podcast
