Speaker 2 (00:20):
Give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Congratulations, you've made it or just about made it to
the end of the week. Yes, Friday is here. Welcome in.
It is the Doug Gottlieb Show. The weekend though you're
starting for some of us. Carrie and I will be
together on Sunday afternoon on Fox Sports Radio five Eastern,
two Pacific as we get you caught up on all
of the late games in the NFL windows. Something we're
(00:48):
going to talk about in twenty minutes because Bears and
Cowboys all the rage, but there may be something more
happening in the late afternoon window that you need to
pay attention to. Carry us back at our station in
Los Angeles. At a Fox Sports Radio headquarters in LA
myself and Jason Stewart, the show's executive producer, we are
in Western New York. We saw the Bills beat the
(01:09):
Dolphins last night thirty one to twenty one. We are
now broadcasting line from our Fox Sports radio affiliate hometown
thirteen forty WLVL in Western New York. Jason had four beers.
Bill scored thirty one points. Apparently there was some controversy
over at Josh Allen fumble. Some ladies screaming in my
ear for three hours, but it wasn't an annoying scream.
She was just excited about the game. Stood for three
(01:31):
plus hours. My feet were sore aside from the walking.
It was a great, great time we took in the
atmosphere and now spending more time Jason Scott family from
the area. So we are making the most of it
hanging out in Western New York on our Basically it's
like sixty hours in the Western New York area, so
there's gonna be Bills game, Niagara Falls, family hangout in
(01:55):
good times.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Can I address something I know that Bill's Mafia sounds cool.
Hashtag Bills MafA maybe the most recognizable brand fan brand
in the NFL. So I don't want to remove the name,
but I will say this, it's a misnomer like mafia, right,
carry it kind of it, I guess it would insinuate
that that's kind of underhanded and criminal and you're dealing
(02:16):
with a bunch of bad guys, right. The Bills fans
might be the most gentlest fans of any sport anywhere,
and that's why I kind of root for him. And
that's that's the feel that we got last night, like
they're just they're really nice, salt of the earth people
that really want their team to win, and there's just
something very wholesome about that. So the mafia thing almost
paints a negative brush. They're very they're very good people.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Well, I mean, yes, you're one hundred percent correct on that, Jason,
But when you see images and YouTube videos of them
in there all there, I guess, and their glory and
jumping on tables and drinking beers and crashing it, you know,
it kind of lends lends the voice towards that. But
you're correct, the Buffalo Beils fans are in and sweet
(03:01):
and actually really care about the product. So there is
a little bit of a misnomer on on that.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
I think Bill's mafia makes you think that if you
cheer against the team, they're gonna kill you and throw
you in a river, and they are not.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
You are in New York, Dan, You're still in New York.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I don't think they're going to there. Weren't Dolphins fans
that made it out alive last night to Jason's point,
and I think that this this represents a bit what
he's talking about. Do you remember when it was the
Bills needed the Bengals to beat the Ravens to go
to the playoffs years back and they upset Baltimore. I
(03:38):
believe that, and the fan base of Buffalo donated to
Andy Dalton's troty. That's right, yep, because of like what
you know, like what they did and what it allowed
them to do to make the postseason, and that kind
of started that. And then I think other fan bases
have done the same, but it started with Buffalo, and
Buffalo has done it a couple of different times. A
(03:59):
very friendly atmosphere. Sure there may have been a guy
with a picture of OJ and Nicole on his T shirt.
I did put that on Instagram and X yesterday social
media if you want to check it out at Dan
Byer on Fox or Instagram, buiograms. But we had some
great images and videos from the night, and it was
just an experience that I was so glad we got
(04:20):
to experience. And we wouldn't have been able to do
it next year because the stadium is new next year.
And I think Carrie, that's the thing where most people
would say, I want to go when the new stadium's there.
I want to see what the new stadium was all about.
And I just I felt differently about it, and I
wanted to see what the old facility was like because
we're never going to be able to see it again.
(04:41):
It was just really happy that we were able to
make the trip. And I think it's a good lesson
in life. Not to sound all raw, raw and motivational,
but when you have an opportunity to do something, and
maybe you don't always, but if you ever on the
fence about something, it's better to just do it. And
sometimes the reward from that and be ten to twenty
(05:01):
times as much as you were hoping for. That's what
I feel like this trip's been.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
Yeah, No, sounds amazing. Sounds like you guys had a
really good time and are continuing to do that, And
I would just say, man, enjoy it.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
Man.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
You said something really really poetic there and it's just
this thing is short, man, Life is short experiences.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
You know.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
People think they come and go and they will reprise
themselves again eventually at some point, but you never know, man,
And so when you get that opportunity, yeah, go have
at it.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Ask Clayton Kershaw today, who probably is like, in a
blink of an eye, my baseball career is over now.
That blink lasted eighteen seasons, eleven All Star appearances, MVP Award, three,
Cy Young's World Series crown in twenty twenty, and I
know last year wasn't a part of the World Series team,
but still like this career of Clayton Kershaw officially going
(05:47):
to be coming to an end at the end of
this season. And it's funny when I look at when
I look at Clayton Kershaw, I look at Clayton Kershaw
in this group of pitchers that we have in Major
League Baseball right now, where it's Justin Verlander and Max
Schurzer are kind of his contemporary, his peers Hall of
Fame caliber pitchers, but Verlander and schurz Aer have played
(06:09):
on multiple teams. I insures are even bounced around early
on in his career. There is something special, and there's
something unique about Clayton Kershaw getting the opportunity to be
able to spend his entire career not only just one franchise,
but an iconic franchise in baseball, in the Dodgers. And
so we knew that it was probably going to beat
Clayton Kershaw's last season. All signs pointed to that. But
(06:31):
when the official word came out that he did confirm
that he's going to be hanging them up after this year,
That's what I kind of thought about, is just the
longevity of what he was able to do, while other
peers who rose to the occasion like he did had
to find other routes to contain their success.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Yeah, I mean, it's been a great story career. Obviously,
there's been moments of stuff that I'm sure he would
want back also in that journey as well, But I mean,
for him, great eighteen your career, got the World Series,
had really dominant performances, had dominant series up up, you know,
finally reached that strikeout landmark as well, And so I mean,
(07:10):
at this point, he's achieved everything that he could, I think,
and I suspected that this would be the last year.
Speaker 6 (07:16):
Anyway.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
But for him, kudos to a great career. You said it,
eighteen years at one spot. You just don't see that
often we had, you know, especially not contemporaries in that
sport at the position he plays. But if you could
wanted to, like, you know, marry it to another situation,
it'll be like, it'll be similar to a Dirk in
Dallas or a Kobe in La Like, it's that same
type of energy when you talk about Kershaw.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
To me, it is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Jason Stewart is a lifelong Dodger fan as
well an executive producer of the show. Not a surprise
that Kershell hung them up.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
No, not a surprise, But seeing the way he's pitched,
how productive he's been this season, I thought he might
do it. Yet Yet again, he's been kind of on
this one year, one year contract for the last three
years or so, and it looks like he's actually healthy
going into the postseason. Knock on wood for crying out out.
He's still got one more start. But the thing that
(08:10):
sticks out about Clayton and what you just touched on,
like one team the entire career, it takes a combination
of two things. First of all, it takes an organization
that has bottomless pockets, so he was with the right
organization that could always pay him. And it took the
loyalty of and he's got that old school like loyalty.
You know, he had a sense of duty. His professionalism
(08:33):
is what I admire most about him. He's going to
be missed in that clubhouse. I know he couldn't pitch
it all last year in the World Series, but I
know his clubhouse presence was a major part of that championship.
So hopefully we can deliver one for him this year,
and hopefully he could actually pitch in a game.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
That'll be awesome. Maybe I'm contradicting what I said at
the beginning and saying that in a blink of an
eye as eighteen year career is over, I think that's
maybe why he makes the decision, like there is a
lot to go. I think you could talk about it
as a former pro athlete, like there's so much that
goes into getting ready for a season. Adding one more
season to Clayton Kershaw's tenure isn't going to do anything
for his legacy or anything. So I think that's probably
(09:12):
comes in the decision as well. Playing this season to
get three thousand strikeouts like he did, I think that
obviously was a goal. There's no denying that that you
could have gone on on top. Maybe you had fomo
because you weren't a part of the team that did
win it last year and you wanted to see if
you could run it back and be a part of that.
I can understand that, But now you've got three thousand.
There are no guarantees. We don't know if the Dodgers
(09:33):
are the same team as they were a year ago.
By all accounts, they probably aren't, but you never know
what can happen to the playoffs. So adding number nineteen
to a year, like even if he was at nineteen
now and you're like, hey, I want to put twenty
years in the big leagues, maybe that would be something.
But I don't think that there's anything added for him
to try to play next year unless he just really
wanted to play. There's no milestone. Adding another ring isn't
(09:55):
going to change his legacy. I think that all came
into play and probably making the decision.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Two thousand and I know, I'm sure it was big,
and obviously we're seeing the last of a dying breed. Right,
pictures don't pitch this way. We got a couple of
pictures that are are up and comers that, you know,
if the trajectory holds up, which is a big if nobody.
I mean, it's it's so hard to accumulate eighteen years
as a pitcher. But you know, you got the Paul
Skins and guys like that who pitch, you know, pitch
(10:20):
pretty lengthy in their outings and could possibly have a
chance to reach this. But I mean we may be
seeing the last one for a while. Actually reached that
three thousand marks.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
So how fast did eight years go for you in
the NFL? Oh?
Speaker 5 (10:33):
I mean the blink of an eye literally, Like that's
you think about coming in as a as a rookie,
and you you know, you you start planning like I'm
about to do this, and I'm going to do this,
I'm going to achieve this, and then those things come
and next thing you know, I'm traded to Arizona six
years later and you're like, whoh blah, I'm on the
down end already. I mean, I'm in a place now
where I'm having fun playing football. But you know, starting
(10:55):
you know, Dad, we talked about this starting every game
and actually trying to do that over and over again.
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Even eight years.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
It's like, okay, I've done this too many times, So eighteen,
I know has to feel like an eternity for your body.
But as far as the time goes, man, I could
see why it feels so quick, because it really is.
And I mean just think about us, Dan, We've been
together working on Sundays for a year and just how
fast that went. We already on year two and it
(11:25):
seems like it was just the blink of an eye.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Who are the who like quickly comes to mind? You
don't have to put too much thought into this. Yeah,
who quickly comes to mind is a guy that played
his entire career for one NFL team and had like
a lot of years in I guess Ray Lewis is
the one that comes to mind first for me. Okay,
And it won't come off quick to your mind.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Yeah, I mean, it's always usually like a kicker or alignment, right.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
I can think that.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
I can think like Joe Thomas with Cleveland, right.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Like, yeah, I thought, and Anthony Munos. Yeah, like for
some reason Munos came to mind because think he's a
lifelong Bengal like that was along along those I don't.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
Want a skill player, No no, no, no, we're able to
do it.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Jerry Rice didn't do it, Troy Aikman did. I mean,
and as we saw on the Cowboys documentary, and we
saw what happened in that documentary and how EMMITTT. Smith
felt about being an Arizona Cardinal and how he balled
his eyes out when they had to go to I
shouldn't laugh at it, but like that's how emotional that
he got of that I shouldn't be in this spot
(12:24):
and that I shouldn't be in this locker room. It
wasn't supposed to turn out that way. And that's the
other part of it. Like you can look at Kershaw
and I mean it's, you know, fortunate, like it's zero
point one percent club of players that can have that
sort of career, Like it doesn't end great for a
lot of athletes.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
Yeah, bo Bow just throughout Antonio Gates, which is a
go win as well.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Yeah, yes, there's I mean, they're they're there, like there are,
but there's much more. I mean, Barry Sanders. When you
want to think of the rare skill position one but
Barry Sanders retirement is just as much of a discuss
about when he did and how he did than his
career at times because of how good it was. Did
you know in your eighth season that you were done?
Speaker 5 (13:08):
After no during the year, I mean seven eight, I
was already because even when I went to the league,
I told my mom I would play only four years.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
This is how forward my mind was.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
Football was obviously something I was really blessed to do
God given thing right, and so I had to honor that.
But I was always, you know, I gave my all
to it and really you know, put my focus in
and when it was there, but I saw a bigger
vision for myself.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
So I never.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Really lived and died on the hill of being a
professional football player. So I mean, did I think I
would play fifteen years? Definitely? Not ever, But eight was
like you start getting close to that, like a milestone
of ten or something like that, And so I thought
about it. But then I fractured my back my last
year in Arizona and kept playing that whole year, but
(13:54):
started to like start started to weigh the risk of
what it could be or what could possibly happen. So
for me, there were other factors why I didn't reach
tend but yeah, I mean I never thought i'd play
over that.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Though if I fractured my back, we'd be like, all right,
I'm done, we'll see you later. This has been fun.
This has been fun. Yeah, in an unimaginable decision as well,
because I think the retirement of a pro athlete is
you still have this whole other life to lead, Yes,
but the life that you led up to that point
is just no more. And it's different than retiring from
(14:28):
any job. Another reason why I hate when we compare
sports to real jobs. It just annoys me. But here's
another reason why it would annoy me. He is Carrie Rhodes,
the eight year NFL Vets All Pro starter since day one.

Sports Radio betting analysts joins us here on Fox Sports Radio. Hello, Jared,
(16:37):
how are you?
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Hello?
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Everyone?
Speaker 8 (16:39):
I'm just excited to talk to Carry. I'm a longtime
Jets fan. Carry. I don't know if that's a good
thing or a bad thing, but I was very excited
that you were hosting the show that I've been chat
it up with you.
Speaker 6 (16:48):
It depends on who you're talking to, Jared, those are
something Listen, you had some good years, man.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
I'll be honest, I think we you go what one
actually title game in that run?
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Or did you leave just before then?
Speaker 8 (16:58):
No?
Speaker 6 (16:58):
I got the one, I got the one, got the
one man.
Speaker 8 (17:00):
Those are some great years, man, I really enjoyed you.
I appreciate everything you did sure that franchise.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Thank you. There was also a season carry started out
four and oh and then what happened many? Why are
you bringing this up? That was an Arizona though, yes.
Speaker 6 (17:12):
Four when we lost the last twelve just leave it alone,
Dan or whatever. Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
The only One's account. Countdown of Kickoff airs each Saturday
between nine o'clock and noon Eastern listen live and any
of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates or on the iHeartRadio
app presented by Bett MGM. Speaking of Fox Sports Radio affiliates, Jared,
you're in Las Vegas, Carrie is in La I am
in Western New York is Jason Stuart and I took
in Bill's Dolphins last night. So we're at hometown thirteen forty,
(17:38):
our Fox Sports Radio affiliate, fresh off of that Bill's
win and having a good time last night in Buffalo.
I think they're gonna have a good time in Salt
Lake City on Saturday. But like right after you guys
are done with the show, it's a morning kickoff between
the Utes and Red Raiders in a Big twelve showdown.
How do you think this one breaks down? In Salt Lake. Yeah,
(17:59):
kind of a weird.
Speaker 8 (18:00):
Time spot, I think for this game. And it's also
interesting because neither team has really been tested so far.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Right.
Speaker 8 (18:07):
Texas Tech has just been pummeling teams and they've covered
all their spreads. Utah is pulling away from Wyoming and
they're beating up on UCLA, and it just I don't
really know how good either of these teams are.
Speaker 6 (18:18):
I do know Kyle.
Speaker 8 (18:19):
Whittingham's got an eighty percent win rate at home, so
he's been really good. In Salt Lake City, Baron Morton's
been fantastic nine hundred yards, eleven touchdowns to one pick,
and they've got basically just a you know, a gluttony
of receivers, five of them through the first three games
that have over one hundred yards receiving one of them
is a tight end, so they're spreading it around and
I think they're getting their money's worth from that very
expensive roster.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
The question I have.
Speaker 8 (18:41):
In this game, and it's a question that I don't
really think I can answer right now, and I think
this is why the lines kind of you know, hovering
around that key number of three. You're giving Utah basically
the three for being at home. How does either team
respond in a dogfight, because again, neither team has really
played a tight game so far. I think this one
is going to be more of a slugfest. That's the
kind of st that Kyle Whittingham likes to play. I
(19:02):
really love the quarterback from Utah, the transfer from New Mexico.
He's been fantastic so far. I would lean Utah, but
now that it's above that key number of three right now,
I have to lay three and a half points if
you want to bet the uts. It kind of feels
like I kick your feet up and watch and see
which team really responds well to the adversity.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
Jared, I want to talk about two teams in the
state of Florida that are going in different directions, the
Florida versus Miami game. This one, for me personally, I
feel like it's a game where Miami has been flying high.
They'd beat a really good Notre Dame team, but now
they're in the position as the favorite here and there
planing a Florida team that struggled out the gate, and
(19:38):
DJ Lagway hasn't played well. I expect him to bounce
back in this game, and I actually think Florida will
cover this game, but I also think they have a
chance to win. What do you think about this?
Speaker 6 (19:48):
Wow, So here's the question that I have.
Speaker 8 (19:51):
I do think Florida last week gave you the win
one from the gipper effort right like they were coming
off the USF loss. Everyone thought Napier was going to
get fired and they're going going into Death Valley at night,
and everyone thought it was going to be a blood bath.
And they really battled in that game again, five interceptions,
one of them returned for a touchdown, they had a
touchdown call back on a holding penalty, and they still
(20:12):
only lost the game by ten. Now, they didn't cover
the spread, but they were in that game and their
defense really battled. My question is can you raise your
level once again in now a spot where you know
you're probably out of the college football playoff race, you're
not gonna win the SEC Like it really does feel
like if Florida does quit, this would be the week four.
(20:32):
And here's here's a weird conspiracy theory.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Guys.
Speaker 8 (20:35):
So four games in the college football season is when
you burn.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Your red shirt year.
Speaker 8 (20:40):
Florida is about to play its fourth game and if
the locker room thinks Napier's gone at the end of
the year.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
The whole country does.
Speaker 8 (20:48):
There's probably some players in that room that are gonna
have to make some tough decisions, and I think that
is again this is tinfoil hat conspiracy theory type stuff,
but I do think there is a avenue where some
of those players are like, man, I am going to
go all out and burn one of my years of
eligibility in an nil era where I'm making a ton
of money for a guy that's dead man walking. So
I think that's kind of like the side story here.
(21:09):
But the main course in this game carry Miami's offensive
line I think might be the best in college football there.
Their offensive line coach Alec Mirball is fantastic. They've got
two I think first rounders on the offensive line. I
really think this is an old line. Francis Miaga, the
right tackle, the right card in Nez Cooper six six,
three point fifty. The right side of that line is
a bulldozer. LSU's offensive line is not great, so I
(21:31):
think Miami will control the tempo in this game. But
you're right, DJ Lagway when he plays to the ceiling,
is one of the best players in the country. The
problem is he's been banged up and he hasn't practiced
a whole lot. So I'm kind of lean into the
Miami side here. And if there are some players in
that Florida locker room that are kind of looking at
that fourth game, say hey, I don't want to burn
my year of eligibility for this napier guy, That's where
I think things could really get out of hand for
(21:51):
the Gators.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Florida Miami is also a funky rivalry because it's not
a rivalry, but it is a rivalry. Like there are
times where they didn't play for years. Florida plays Florida State.
They've got their rivalry game with Georgia Miami and Florida State.
It's more of the rivalry. So it's yeah, it's a
weird one. When these two schools meet Michigan and Nebraska.
That's where I want to go next. I know you're
going to break this down, but if you had to
(22:13):
pick one of the two quarterbacks, who do you fancy
more on these sidelines?
Speaker 6 (22:17):
Good question.
Speaker 8 (22:18):
So I'll tell you right now, we're going to look
back on this summer, guys, and we're going to laugh
at all of the generational talent. Talk about Arch Manning
and the fact that we weren't mentioning Bryce Underwood in
that same breath. Like, to me, Bryce Underwood is he's
the generational talent, that's the young quarterback that's ascending to
the throne.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
The problem is he.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
Hasn't yet done it on the road in a tough environment.
Right You saw what happened at Oklahoma, and it wasn't
anything that he did wrong.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
I just think the kid gloves are still on.
Speaker 8 (22:46):
They ran a very vanilla game plan in that game,
and to be fair, at Oklahoma's defense is like a
torture chamber. So I don't think Nebraska is on that level,
but that Nebraska defense can still get after it.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
Now.
Speaker 8 (22:56):
Riola's kind of on the other side of the coin.
I think Dylan Riola to me, is a guy who's
kind of an NFL quarterback right now. The problem is
Nebraska a they struggle to win close games. They did
get over the hump against Cincinnati earlier this year, but
very different test against the Michigan defense. And secondly, I
don't love the weapons around Nebraska, and that to me
is where I think Michigan has a couple of guys
(23:17):
that can really stretch the field. First of all, Justice
Haynes is a perfect fit for this Nebraska offense. He
did not fit well in Alabama scheme, but Michigan to me,
is an I Formation, pound the Rock kind of team.
So I think he fits very much better in ann
Arbor than he did in Alabama.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
And I love this.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
Donovan McCully, the transfer from Indiana, He's an Alpha six
five two to fifteen over fifteen yards per catch. Now
for Nebraska, Dane Key has kind of come on a
little bit late six three two ten transfer from Kentucky.
He and again it was against Houston Christian, but you
finally started to see a little bit of explosion on
this Nebraska offense. I think whichever quarterback kind of handles
their weakness is better, is going to win this game.
Can underwould handle the environment? And can Riyola, I mean, goodness, gracious,
(23:57):
get over the hump in one of these close games,
because this kind of feels like a college football playoff
elimination game. I think the loser's out and I think
the winners got a chance to really make him hey
in the big ten.
Speaker 5 (24:06):
Jared one more from me, and this was an interesting game,
and I didn't know if it would be interesting coming
into the year. But number twenty two Albrin is heading
to Norman to play Oklahoma, and both teams are three
and no. Alburn's ranked twenty second at the moment now
and then the rankings and looking pretty good. But I'm
a big John Matier fan. I think what he's doing
with Oklahoma and running the offense and just the toughness,
the moxie that he has about him. I'm really loving
(24:29):
his Oklahoma team, especially their defense. What do you see
happening in this situation in this game?
Speaker 8 (24:34):
I agree with you about Matier. The only issue I
see when I watch the tape is the mechanics are
a little bit wonky. He goes for it right. He's
a hero ball kind of quarterback, and he's throwing a
pick in each of his first three games. But he's
got that moxie right, that gamesmanship that I love as
a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
He will go for broke.
Speaker 8 (24:52):
The interesting element here nobody knows Jackson Arnold better than
Brent Benaman, and that to me is disadvantage for j Arnold.
Another thing I noticed when I watched Auburn last week
against South Alabama. You are seeing Hugh Freeze run the
show from the sidelines. He is in Arnold's ear up
until the snap, almost kind of dissecting what they're seeing.
(25:13):
This is only the third right, he's playing his fourth.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
Game in the new system.
Speaker 8 (25:16):
Right, you can't do that on the road in the
SEC and the.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Check with me.
Speaker 8 (25:20):
RPO offense sometimes can get a little bit off kilter
if you're not perfect with your reads and the other thing.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Brett venables man, he will.
Speaker 6 (25:29):
Lie to you.
Speaker 8 (25:30):
He will show you something at the snap, and then
right at the snap he will morph into a completely
different look. For example, they run a blitz package last
week against Temple. They brought the linebackers and drop both
of their defensive tackles into coverage. And don't get me wrong,
these defensive tackles are studs. Dominic Williams senior transfer from
TCU six one three twenty five, and they got Jaydon
Jackson up and coming sophomore. He's a stud six two
(25:53):
three twenty So these D tackles can cover. But if
you are bringing linebackers and dropping D tackles and you're
running an RPOs over the middle, that's.
Speaker 6 (26:00):
Gonna get picked off.
Speaker 8 (26:01):
Just like Peyton Thorn through an interception pick six last
year which decided this game. So I do feel like
Oklahoma's defense will have.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
The edge there.
Speaker 8 (26:10):
But Jackson Arnold put on a lot of weight in
the offseason. He is a factor with his legs, and
I think that's the difference for Auburn. Last year with
Peyton Thorn, he was not a runner. Now Arnold, who
has bulked up a little bit, and you're really seeing
the quarterback power, the jet motion sweep. Those are factors
in Auburn's offense. But at the end of the day,
I'll take Venables over Hugh Freeze in this cat and
mouse game.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
Jared Smith is our FSR betting analyst. You can find
him on x at Jared Smith Bets, the co host
of Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff. Two things before
I let you go. Number one, Crazy the thing because
we talked about Michigan and Nebraska and USC Michigan State
playing a late night game, but the biggest game in
(26:50):
the Big Ten is Illinois Indiana. And if you would
have told me that years ago, in any year, I
would have said you're crazy. But it is the battle
of the Eyes. Indiana the home two team in this
Where do you see that matchup in Bloomington going?
Speaker 8 (27:03):
This one feels like an elimination game for the CFP.
Right if you just look at the schedules of these
two teams, then you got Illinois playing USC and Ohio
State at home, and in Indiana travels to Oregon and
Penn State. So I'm getting I'm getting two losses for
both of these teams down the road. So if you
lose this one, you're nine to three with no ranked wins.
I don't think that gets you into the colleg Football Playoff.
(27:24):
Like this feels like a college football play in game,
and we'll see which team handles the environment better. I
like Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for Indiana, of course transfer
coming in from Kyle last year. I think he kind
of gives you a different element that you saw last
year from this Indiana offense eleventh inefficiency so far, the
Illinois offense has been a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Explosive this year.
Speaker 8 (27:46):
Alt Meyer is twentieth inefficiency. I kind of feel like
this is a rock fight kind of game, and I
think you're catching almost a full touch now with Illinois,
Like that's kind of the direction I lean, but I'm
also surprised that Indiana's laying this many points in this spot.
So when the market kind of plays tricks on me,
I tend to stay away. But my lean is Illinois
(28:07):
because I think if you ask me what Brett Beelima prefers,
he prefers to be counted out. He prefers the underdog
role that suits his vibe better. And I think he'll
have his team up for this game. And let's be honest,
when we saw Indiana play these tight games against good
teams last year, it didn't go so well.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
And what about this date? I saw on Twitter? What
what happened? Some real ghosts ya, because she's huging you
to try to understand, like what her feelings were, what
went on in your love life?
Speaker 6 (28:36):
Wha what? Yeah? So curious I went.
Speaker 8 (28:42):
So I took a girl out for a second date
last Saturday. Nice dinner, Greek meal, We're really nice group
spot here in town. Shout out Ili a fantastic Greek
restaurant in Summerland, And I thought it was going great again.
Second date and everything went well. I did the whole
gentleman thing. I opened the doors, I paid for the dinner.
You know, little good night kiss, and I thought everything
went great. And again it was our second date, so
(29:03):
she went out with me once for coffee, then agreed
to a second date and everything went well. And then
I texted her again this week to hang out, and
she didn't even hear it, like crickets, It didn't even
get like the I had a great time, but I
think we should be friends text like literally no response
at all, and we kind of run in the same
gym circles.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
And I reached out to her friend. I was like,
what's the deal with this with this girl?
Speaker 8 (29:24):
And my friend was like, I think you dodged a
bullet because I think she's actually seeing someone. Oh, and
it sounds like she was kind of using me as
either a validation or be maybe the current boyfriend doesn't
really treat her right and she wants the nice meal
and and and then all of a sudden, I started
to actually show interest in show feelings, and then she
just ran away. But that's kind of the Vegas dating
scene in a nutshell.
Speaker 6 (29:45):
Okay, man, that's the dating scene everywhere.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
Jerry.
Speaker 6 (29:47):
So you're okay, You'll be okay, You'll balance.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
I appreciate you. I'm married and so my wife is excluded.
But as someone told me long ago, women can't live
with them, can't live with them. So they're take that
for you, and uh, hopefully there's there. There's there's brighter
days ahead in Las Vegas. I appreciate the pepy second
date come on, like, yeah, that's yes.
Speaker 8 (30:10):
If you have a problem with the first day, it's
totally fine. We got coffee, it was very casual. Just
say listen, I don't really think there's anything there. If
you agree to the second date to a nice dinner
and then you goes to me after that, then I'm upset.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Yeah, correct, correct, At least it's not like you were
asking for more, you know, or anything like that.
Speaker 8 (30:26):
I just asked her to hang out again. I was, hey,
what are you doing this week? I'm how can burgers
tonight at the house?
Speaker 6 (30:29):
You want to come by?
Speaker 5 (30:30):
I mean the only problem, the only problem would be Jared,
if you had like a ring under the cup on
the second date, that would be I didn't have.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
Any of that.
Speaker 8 (30:36):
Actually, we were talking about how I am very much
in a just chill like I just want to hang
out and see where things go. VI but like just
like communicate, like basic communications.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
Yes, which is sometimes in this business it fails to happen.
But we love communicating with you every Friday, not only
for great picks. Now we've got some uh some dating
stories to be Jared can't wait to listen to you
tomorrow morning with Bride Know and Rich orn Berger here
at Fox Sports.
Speaker 6 (31:00):
I appreciate right here this weekend.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
Thank you again, nine to noon Eastern. Each Saturday, listen
love at any of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates or
on the iHeart Radio app presented by Bett MGF Chiefs, Giants,
the Sunday night game, the Marquee game. In the late window.
Thank you very much, Isaac, that we have Carrie, that
you and I will be live on end Zone Radio
on Fox Sports Radio five Eastern, two Pacific. Bears Cowboys
(31:23):
is the headliner, but I'm not sure if it is so.
If you look at this late window that we've got Carrie,
Saints at Seahawks, You've got the Niners taking on the Cardinals,
and you've got the Broncos against the Chargers. Best game
of that late window of those four is what for me.
Speaker 5 (31:42):
I'll be paying attention to that Broncos Chargers game. And
I think a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon.
I said the Charges would win that division coming into
the season. Right now, they've had two really good wins.
Now they're playing a team in the Broncos, who a
lot of people also think can have a lot of
success this year. So it's gonna be a big one.
The Broncos are coming off with disappointing loss last week,
(32:03):
and so will they were their level will play rise
for this game or will the Chargers show their dominance.
I'm really excited to see that game.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
You know, this Arizona team, as we've said, has the
best opportunity of any teams to start two and zher
and they catched in Carolina last week. The game almost game,
gave the game away. Then they had the Saints, who,
as I mentioned, faced the Seahawks in this late window.
Cardinals beat the Saints in Week one, Niners beat the
Saints in Week two. So when you have these two
teams here and what is a competitive division? Rams playing
(32:35):
good football. They're off to a two and zero start.
Seahawks just won in Pittsburgh. Yeah, you're gonna have some
titan you know, these Titan snow pun and tended with Tennessee.
But you've got these Titans of the NFC in an
early season matchup with brock Purty maybe not fully healthy.
I that Arizona forty nine Ers game because I think
it could really vault one of those teams. I know
(32:56):
we expected something with the forty nine Ers this year.
You know how much I love what Jonathan It's done
with Arizona. But you get the three and zero with
the division win over those two teams. Specifically, if it's
Arizona you go to San Francisco and win, that could
really pay dividends. Listen, Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhard are
gonna be on the call on Fox between the Bears
and Cowboys, but there's just some really good football in
that late window.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
Yeah, the Bears Cowboys when I mean yeah, I mean
I know the storylines are there, the quarterbacks and whatnot,
But yeah, that one for me will probably probably rank
out of the ones we just named. It would be
third on that list for me to watch. So I
understand what you're saying, and the fact that there are
most of these are division games as well, it's gonna
be really cool to see. Well that Cowboys Bears is not,
(33:36):
but it's the forty nine ers and Cardinals and the
Broncos and charges. That just means a lot more to me.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
And that's it, you know, my Seahawks playing against the Saints. Unfortunately,
I am a realist. I understand that that is I'm
the under undercard. Like that's about at two pm in
the afternoon when they go to the rink at nine
thirty at night in Las Vegas. He is carry roads.

that they have out and we kind of it was
that we debuted it, but we played it on our
show last Sunday and Liam was listening via the iHeartRadio
app and you can go and find out on a
computer as well at iHeartRadio dot com. But that's how
(35:42):
he was able to listen to the song and hear
it premiere, so it's great to see his excitement over
it as well.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Yeah, he was so excited first time getting some radio
play but really talented artists, and obviously there'll be more
streams on the airways for him to come. But yeah,
we did him a service last Sunday.

Carrie is at our Fox Sports Radio studios back in
(36:19):
Los Angeles, Jason Stewart and myself or at our Fox
Sports Radio affiliate Hometown thirteen forty WLVL in Western New
York and a huge, huge thank you to Frank Miller
for setting us up here. Over these last two hours,
we've had an absolute glast hanging out in their new
and improved studios. Can't wait to get home, see the
family and everything. But we felt at home here in
(36:41):
Western New York. So it's a great time. Taking in
that Bills game last night, and they took care of
us nicely here at our affiliate as well, So it's
been fun.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
Is it only a family, Dan? Or are you excited
to see me Sunday as well?
Speaker 3 (36:51):
And Carrie second and Isaac loh and Crown as well.
Who's given us the press? The press, the headlines of
the day, who's in and out and whatnot? Isaac? What's happening? Dan?
Speaker 9 (37:04):
Top story? Popular former NFL All Pro Carrie Rhodes horrified
listeners when he revealed that he takes his shoes off
on airplanes. Actually, Carrie could never horrify us about anything. However,
there was a coup of sorts in Atlanta as the
Falcons released longtime placekicker Young Way coup and signed Parker
(37:28):
Romo not to be confused with Tony Romo or Parker Posey.
I suppose to the active roster. After Romo's five for
five performance on field goals in last Sunday's win at Minnesota.
Young Way Coup, a former pro bowler, was actually with
Atlanta so long he was the third leading score in
(37:50):
the entire Francise history of the Falcons. He'd been their
placekicker for the last six plus seasons. Wow, what have
you done for me lately?
Speaker 3 (37:57):
I guess yes, seriously. I love the shot of Parker
Romo with Bjon Robinson and Leonard Floyd after their win
against the Vikings where he was basically introducing himself to
everybody because they didn't know who he was, right. Obviously,
they were happy enough with the performance to keep him
around because yeah, as we as we found out, young
Waiku had his place in Atlanta, but that eras come
to an end.
Speaker 5 (38:16):
He didn't even know who Floyd was. So that's that
tells you how new he was to the Saint.
Speaker 9 (38:22):
The zero to two defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs
officially listing receiver Xavier Worthy as questionable for Sunday Night
football against the New York Giants due to the shoulder
injury that Worthy sustained when he dislocated it in a
collision with teammate Travis Kelcey in the season opener against
the Chargers in Brazil.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
In an unrelated story, Brian Dables decisions also listed as
questionable for the New York Giants. I'm sorry they joked
that Chiefs can't. There's no way that they follow the
oh and three.
Speaker 6 (38:51):
I'm telling you, Dan, I've already called it. That's my
upset of the week. All right.
Speaker 9 (38:55):
We'll be tracking that on Monday, for sure. Check the
podcast final him in the NBA Miami Heat All Star
guard Tyler Hero had successful left ankle surgery. He has expected, however,
to miss approximately eight weeks recovering, which would mean he
would miss the start of the regular season.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
May not be an awful thing, save some wear and
tear early on, and then play later in an Eastern
conference that we think could be up for grabs.
Speaker 5 (39:21):
I hate when those guys wait till the last minute
to get surgery done. They know they're already hurt, and
get it done before.
Speaker 6 (39:25):
And that's the press. They get out there and pressed.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
That was the press.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Carrie and I'll be back together on Sunday five Eastern
on end Zone. Ready on Fox Sports Radio thanks to Jason, Sam,
Carrie and Frank Talk to you on Monday.
